Saints | Nick Fairley contract update Fri Jan 26, 01:14 AM
New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley (heart) remains at odds with the team over the four-year contract he signed with the club last March. Both Fairley and the Saints have filed grievances against each other, and general manager Mickey Loomis indicated that no resolution has been reached nor is there a timetable for one. It also remains unclear if Fairley will attempt to resume his playing career.

Saints | Nick Fairley won't play this year Mon Jun 26, 04:50 PM
Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley (heart) will not play in 2017 due to his heart condition. His career is also in jeopardy.
Footballguys view: This condition was known since Fairley came into the league as a first-round pick out of Auburn in 2011. He has received opinions from at least three doctors about this issue and a conclusion was made that he's done for this year and maybe his career. Fairley is coming off a career-high 6.5 sack season in 2016 and losing him is a huge blow to the Saints defense. Back in March, the Saints re-signed Fairley to a four-year, $28 million contract, including an $8 million signing bonus. Sheldon Rankins (first-round pick in 2016) will be asked to do more in Fairley's absence. |

The New Orleans Saints are preparing as if DT Nick Fairley (heart) will not be able to play in 2017.

Saints | Nick Fairley dealing with heart condition Sat Jun 3, 08:10 PM
New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley (heart) has been absent from OTAs due to a heart condition that could jeopardize his playing career, according to Fox Sports' Jennifer Hale.
Footballguys view: Fairley has been playing with this heart condition ever since he came into the league. The condition could shorten his pro career, and this is something to keep an eye on. Losing Fairley would be a big blow to the on-field product, but also it would come with salary cap ramifications. Back in March, the Saints re-signed Fairley to a four-year, $28 million contract, including an $8 million signing bonus. Sheldon Rankins (first-round pick in 2016) will be asked to do more in Fairley's absence. |

Saints | More on Nick Fairley's deal Thu Mar 9, 07:18 PM
Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley's four-year contract is worth close to $30 million, according to a source.
Footballguys view: It's a pretty good deal for both sides, as Fairley had a pretty good year for the Saints and they need to continue to build around something on that defense. |

Saints | Nick Fairley signs four-year deal Thu Mar 9, 05:19 PM
Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley re-signed to a four-year deal Thursday, March 9, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Footballguys view: Fairley was on a "prove it" deal with the Saints, and he did a good job (career-high 6.5 sacks in 2016) so the team wanted to keep him around longer. So long as Fairley stays in shape and stays motivated, he can continue to make plays against the run while getting interior pressure on the passer. |

Saints | Big deal in works for Nick Fairley Thu Mar 9, 01:08 PM
New Orleans Saints impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley and the Saints are close to a big-money contract, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
Footballguys view: Fairley did all right last season, and was better than what the Saints have had the last few years at the position. It makes sense to keep him around. |

Saints | Nick Fairley seeking big money Thu Feb 23, 07:57 PM
New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley will be 'searching for someone willing to pay $10 million per year on average' in free agency, according to Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune. The Saints likely wouldn't go that high, but would make a play for him if the market comes down to around $6 million per year.

Saints | Nick Fairley to test free agency Sun Feb 12, 11:12 AM
New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley will test the open market before considering a new deal with the club once free agency begins next month.
Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Lions in 2011, Fairley signed a one-year deal with the Saints last year to rehab his stock after a poor showing with the Rams in 2015. This past season, Fairley played in 16 games totaling 143 tackles and 6.5 sacks. The Patriots were sniffing around him before he went to the Saints, and there should be a few more teams lined up for Fairley's services after a strong showing in 2016. |

Saints | Nick Fairley would like to return Sat Jan 7, 02:31 PM
New Orleans Saints impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley said he would like to re-sign with the Saints this offseason.
Footballguys view: It would make a lot of sense for the Saints to keep Fairley around. He had a career-best season in 2016 with the Saints. Fairley had a career-high 6.5 sacks and a career-high 22 quarterback hits. With incentives, Fairley ended up earning more than $4 million in 2016 on a one-year deal. We'll see if the Saints want to make a long-term commitment to him. |

Free-agent DT Nick Fairley (Rams) signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints Monday, March 28.

Rams | Nick Fairley joins St. Louis Fri Mar 13, 12:10 PM
Free-agent DT Nick Fairley (Lions) agreed to terms with the St. Louis Rams Friday, March 13.
Footballguys view: The Rams continue to add talent to their defense this offseason. Fairley has never played up to his potential as a pro--but the raw talent is certainly there. If he can stay healthy and motivated, then Fairley will give the Rams yet another player who can make opposing quarterbacks feel uncomfortable. |

Rams | Nick Fairley to visit Thu Mar 12, 12:30 PM
Free-agent DT Nick Fairley (Lions) will visit with the St. Louis Rams.
Footballguys view: Fairley has always had potential, but the big defensive lineman has never played up to it. He needs a fresh start, and that's what he's going to get since the Lions declined to pick up his fifth-year option. Fairley is a disruptive player inside, and he can get interior pressure on the quarterback. Staying healthy and motivated have been problems for him. With the Rams, Fairley could work well in a rotation. |

Free-agent DT Nick Fairley (Lions) will visit with the Cincinnati Bengals Wednesday, March 11, according to sources.

Updating a previous report, representation of Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley and the team met at the NFL Combine Sunday, Feb. 22, and the team expressed an interest in keeping Fairley. The meeting was characterized as being 'very positive.'
Footballguys view: The Lions did not pick up Fairley's fifth-year option, so he's set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins. They could bring him back to Detroit, depending on how much his new contract is--and on how much they spend on Ndamukong Suh. |

Lions | Met with Nick Fairley Sat Feb 21, 08:49 AM
Impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley's agent met with the Detroit Lions Friday, Feb. 20.
Footballguys view: In four years, Fairley has never played a full 16-game season. With only 13.5 sacks in his career, Fairley has a name and potential. The Lions are going to be cautious when considering a deal that would keep him in Detroit. |

Lions | Coach impressed with Nick Fairley Tue Feb 17, 12:32 PM
Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley received praise from defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, who was impressed with how Fairley handled a demotion coming out of training camp, and even more impressed with how Fairley dealt with working his way back from an injury during the regular season, and staying in shape during that time.
Footballguys view: That's awesome, but it doesn't mean Fairley is coming back to the Lions. In four years, Fairley has never played a full 16-game season. With only 13.5 sacks in his career, Fairley has a name and potential. That might be enough for someone to take a chance on him with a lucrative deal. |

Footballguys view: Defensive coordinator Teryl Austin doesn't think Fairley is at game-level fitness yet, but he still thinks his fitness level is good enough to play. Austin said Fairley would play in a limited role if he's active, since he hasn't played since Week 8. |
