Jaguars | 'Good chance' Jags hire Chip Kelly as OC    Tue Jan 17, 12:51 AM

Former San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has a 'good chance' of being hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars' new offensive coordinator. He went into the interview believing he was going to get an offer and he already 'has some assistant hires ready.'

Footballguys view: That would be interesting....to say the least. The Jaguars offense has the pieces to be a high-powered unit if someone figures out what's wrong with QB Blake Bortles. Doug Marrone is a bright head coach, but it seems like an odd fit with Kelly running the offense. We're all for bold decisions, and this could propel Jacksonville to the next level....or it could end in spectacularly horrible fashion. You just never know with Kelly.

Jaguars | Chip Kelly talking with Jags on Monday    Mon Jan 16, 01:26 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are meeting with former San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly on Monday, Jan. 16, presumably to discuss a potential fit as an offensive coordinator.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could use some more punch on offense. They have the talent to thrive, but it all comes down to QB Blake Bortles and his development. He took a step back last year mechanically and will have to re-worked this offseason.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles still the QB    Thu Jan 12, 10:32 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was endorsed as the team's quarterback Thursday, Jan. 12, by executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin.

Footballguys view: They invested enough in him, and there is a strong argument that part of his massive regression this year was due to underwhelming coaching and playcalling. Bortles through more passes (625 this year vs 606 in 2015) but fewer interceptions (16 this season vs 18 last year) so there is some cause for optimism.

Jaguars | Tom Coughlin will have 'final say'    Tue Jan 10, 12:45 AM

Updating a previous report, new Jacksonville Jaguars VP of Football Operations Tom Coughlin appears like he will have the 'final say on everything.'

Footballguys view: First order of business in Jacksonville; get Blake Bortles back on track. After a breakout 2015 campaign, Bortles took a step back in 2016 and showed mechanical flaws that will need to be fixed. Second order of business for the Jaguars? Get an endless supply of Werther's Originals in Coughlin's office.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Jamal Robinson was signed to a Reserve/Future deal Monday, Jan. 9.

Jaguars | Doug Marrone officially named head coach    Mon Jan 9, 07:38 PM

Updating a previous report, Jacksonville Jaguars interim head coach Doug Marrone was officially named the Jaguars' permanent head coach Monday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: Marrone failed as the head coach of the Bills in 2013 and 2014, but he did a good job in two games as interim coach of the Jaguars in 2016. His main project will be to revive the career of QB Blake Bortles. The Jaguars seemed to play better (against weak defenses) over the last two games with Marrone at the helm.

Jaguars | David Caldwell receives extension    Mon Jan 9, 06:00 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell signed a two-year contract extension Monday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars are keeping Caldwell on an extension that ties him to new head coach Doug Marrone and VP of Football Tom Coughlin's 3-year contracts. Caldwell can draft talent (especially on defense), but the Jaguars need QB Blake Bortles to further develop as quickly as possible.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles unsure about option    Sat Jan 7, 01:06 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles said he has no idea if the team will pick up the fifth-year option in his contract.

Footballguys view: The future is unclear for Bortles. He has some serious mechanical issues to clean up if he wants to get his career on track and play up to his potential. The Jaguars need to make a decision on his fifth-year option (likely worth around $19 million) before May 3rd.

Jaguars | Doug Marrone interviews with Jaguars    Fri Jan 6, 08:59 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars interim head coach Doug Marrone interviewed for the full-time position Thursday, Jan. 6. The meeting went into the night, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Marrone has head coaching experience as he was the Bills main man in 2013 and 2014. The Jaguars could go to Marrone if one of the 'hotter' candidates like Kyle Shanahan or Josh McDaniels tells them no thanks. The Rams are also interesting in Marrone as a possibility for their open spot.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles back to basics    Thu Jan 5, 09:59 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will spend this offseason working on his mechanics. He said he'll spend about 10 weeks working on his footwork, which he said was his biggest mechanical flaw. His windup and release will improve along with it, Bortles said. Bortles said part of his issue was that he was trying to be a stand-still passer, which has nothing to do with leaving the pocket, and that's just not something with which he's comfortable.

Footballguys view: Bortles has a lot of work to do this offseason, but it sounds like he's going to put in the effort. He has to or else the Jaguars will move on. They decided to keep Bortles and ship off head coach Gus Bradley. That means Bortles is next if he doesn't get his game back on track, stay healthy and improve on the field.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles salvages season     Wed Jan 4, 06:21 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles managed to pass for 3,905 yards and 23 touchdowns in an otherwise unimpressive season. He also ran for 359 yards and three touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Bortles has a lot to work on going forward if he wants to stay with the Jaguars. His mechanics took a big step back in 2016, and that first needs to be fixed if he's going to play up to his potential.

Jaguars | Louis Nix signs future deal    Wed Jan 4, 09:43 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars DT Louis Nix was signed to a future contract Wednesday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick for the Texans in 2014, Nix has spent most of 2016 on the Jaguars practice squad. At 6'2" 331 pounds, Nix can clog up the middle but he needs to stay healthy and impress in camp next year if he wants to make the final roster and start playing up to his potential.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles had two separations    Mon Jan 2, 03:03 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (shoulders, wrist) toiled through two shoulder separations and tendinitis in his wrist last season.

Footballguys view: Bortles was not good this year, but his play can't be totally blamed on these injuries. His mechanics took a big step back in 2016, and he'll need to fix that if he wants to get back on track for 2017. This could be Bortles last chance to prove himself with the Jaguars.

Jaguars | Mike Smith to interview with Jaguars    Mon Jan 2, 11:37 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive coordinator Mike Smith will interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching vacancy.

Footballguys view: Smith is a hotter name in these coaching searches than some think. His time as the Falcons head coach ended badly, but he's done a good job getting the Bucs defense on track.

Jaguars | Harold Goodwin to interview with JAX    Mon Jan 2, 11:24 AM

Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin will interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching vacancy Monday, Jan. 2.

Footballguys view: Goodwin has been in his current position with the Cardinals since 2013. He's not a playcaller as that's Bruce Arians role with the team, but Goodwin did get a chance to do that for a few games earlier this year in the preseason.

Jaguars | Kyle Shanahan to interview with Jaguars    Mon Jan 2, 10:19 AM

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan will interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars' head coaching vacancy Friday, Jan. 6, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Jaguars beat writers believe that Shanahan could be the best fit for the team. His innovation as an offensive-minded coach could be just the thing to get QB Blake Bortles back on track.

Jaguars | Josh McDaniels to interview in JAX    Mon Jan 2, 08:27 AM

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars head coaching vacancy, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars need to find a coach that can resuscitate Blake Bortles career. McDaniels has worked well with guys like Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo, but reworking Bortles would be much more of a challenge.

Jaguars | Allen Robinson finishes ugly season    Sun Jan 1, 08:36 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Robinson posted five receptions for 82 yards on a team-high 12 targets in the Week 17 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Robinson's season end numbers of 73-883-6 are immensely disappointing compared to the top 15 draft price most paid for him this year. The elite game he showed in 2015 will make it hard to let him fall too far in 2017 drafts, but he will definitely one of the most important players to have clarity on in the upcoming fantasy season.

Jaguars | Marqise Lee shows well in 2016    Sun Jan 1, 08:36 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee posted six receptions for a team-high 86 yards on nine targets in the Week 17 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Lee was the stuff of fantasy punchlines after rough first two years in the league, but he often outplayed fellow 2014 second rounder Allen Robinson and displayed better chemistry with Blake Bortles despite being less physically talented than Robinson.

Jaguars | Corey Grant makes most of chance    Sun Jan 1, 08:35 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Corey Grant carried 18 times for a career-high 122 yards and a touchdown in the Week 17 game against the Indianapolis Colts, taking advantage of the fact RBs Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon were both sidelined.

Footballguys view: Grant joins Rex Burkhead on the list of 2016 Week 17 studs that should be monitored in the offseason. Willie Parker and others that have paid off in following years have shown us their promise in Week 17.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles ends mediocre season    Sun Jan 1, 08:35 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have declared WR Allen Hurns, QB Brandon Allen, RB Chris Ivory, LB Chris Smith, RB Daryl Richardson, DL Jordan Hill, TE Neal Sterling inactive for Week 17.

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Allen Hurns (hamstring) said his hamstring is still sore and that he likely will not play in Week 17 even though he is listed as questionable.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles practices Thursday    Thu Dec 29, 02:27 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles (shoulder, wrist) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 29.

Footballguys view: Bortles is just as capable of a terrible game as he is a great game. There are a lot more reliable options this weekend, even with some of the teams in the league playing for nothing and resting players.

Jaguars | Limited practice for Marqise Lee    Thu Dec 29, 02:22 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Marqise Lee (hip) was limited during practice Thursday, Dec. 29.
