Jaguars | Kelvin Beachum's option not picked up    Wed Feb 15, 07:05 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars will not pick up OT Kelvin Beachum's option, which will make him an unrestricted free agent this offseason, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Coming off ACL surgery, Beachum made it 15 games with the Jaguars this year. He disappointed with his play and dealt with concussion problems early in the season. There's a chance that Beachum could return to the Jaguars on a more affordable deal.

Jaguars | No talks between Jags, Prince Amukamara    Wed Feb 15, 06:49 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have not talked with the representatives for impending free-agent CB Prince Amukamara at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars had to be pleased with Amukamara's performance in 2016 as he played on a one-year, $5 million deal. Early speculation has the veteran corner earning around $8 to $9 million annually with a new deal. With over $59 million in cap space, the Jaguars should be able to keep Amukamara around if they want.

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas' contract calls for $3 million of his $7 million base salary for 2017 to become fully guaranteed at the end of the day Friday, Feb. 10, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could move on from Thomas as he's done nothing of note in two years with the team. If they do want to get rid of him, then releasing him at some point on Friday would make the most sense. However, the Jaguars do have $63 million in cap space so they might keep Thomas in the fold.

Jaguars | Julius Thomas struggles with injuries    Mon Feb 6, 06:32 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas has missed 11 of 32 games since signing with the Jaguars because of various injuries but has caught nine touchdowns during those games. His $7 million salary for 2017 will be guaranteed if he is on the roster March 13.

Footballguys view: Thomas hasn't done nearly enough when healthy to merit his salary in 2017, but he always shown great chemistry with Blake Bortles in camp, so the team might want to give him one more chance. With Marqise Lee's emergence as a #2A receiver, the passing game could lose him and not take much of a hit.

Jaguars | Jags hope to re-sign Prince Amukamara    Mon Feb 6, 06:31 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars would like to re-sign impending free-agent CB Prince Amukamara this offseason, but he may receive $11 million to $13 million per season in his new contract.

Footballguys view: Amukamara stayed healthy on a one year prove it deal with Jacksonville and will get paid whether by the Jaguars or elsewhere. He was strong as a #2 corner opposite Jalen Ramsey and will start wherever he ends up.

Jaguars | Jags think injury affected Jermey Parnell's play    Sat Feb 4, 01:13 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars believe that OT Jermey Parnell (groin) struggled at right tackle this season because of a lingering groin injury.

Footballguys view: Parnell was supposed to be part of a rebuilding of the power running game in Jacksonville, but the engine rarely turned over for Chris Ivory and TJ Yeldon. This is at least an alibi for Parnell and reason to hope for improvement next season.

Jaguars | Johnathan Cyprien may test market    Sat Feb 4, 01:12 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent SS Johnathan Cyprien probably will be allowed to test the free-agent market this offseason, but the Jaguars may be interested in re-signing him, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike DiRocco.

Footballguys view: Cyprien improved this year and had a role more tailored for his in the box game, but he still hasn't become the player the Jaguars envisioned when they took him in the second round in 2013. If someone overpays him, the Jaguars won't mind letting him walk, but they probably haven't totally foreclosed bringing him back at the right price.

Jaguars | Jags to decide on Kelvin Beachum's status soon    Wed Feb 1, 04:25 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have until Wednesday, Feb. 15, to decide if they will pick up the option in Kelvin Beachum's contract that would keep him with the team for four more seasons. Beachum said he does not know which way the team is leaning at this point.

Footballguys view: Beachum played fifteen games and was part of a line that did a great job limiting sacks compared to previous years, but the team could be uncertain because they have a new power structure.

Jaguars | Denard Robinson will be free agent    Sat Jan 28, 03:36 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars RB Denard Robinson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick of the Jaguars in 2013, Robinson has struggled in a limited role every year. He won't get a ton of interest on the open market, but perhaps some team will want to bring him in as a change-of-pace back.

Jaguars | Scott Milanvich to be Jags QB coach    Fri Jan 27, 06:51 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired former Canadian Football League head coach Scott Milanovich as their quarterbacks coach.

Footballguys view: Milanovich has been coaching ever since 2003, and he's made stops with both NFL Europe and the CFL in various roles. His biggest challenge will be getting Blake Bortles back on track this offseason. Bortles needs to do a ton of mechanical work after regressing in 2016.

Jacksonville Jaguars rookies CB Jalen Ramsey, LB Myles Jack and DE Yannick Ngakoue were all given praise from general manager David Caldwell. 'I think the sky is the limit for those guys,' Caldwell said. 'I've said this before: players usually take their biggest jump from year one to year two and if that holds true for those three guys, I think you can see potential future Pro Bowlers.'

Jaguars | GM confident in Blake Bortles     Thu Jan 26, 04:16 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles still has a vote of confidence from general manager David Caldwell despite two rough seasons to start his young career. 'I think we can win a lot of games with Blake; I think we can win a Super Bowl with Blake,' Caldwell said. 'I think he needs to improve and I think we need to improve around him, too, in order for that to happen. I think the future is bright for him.'

Footballguys view: Bortles needs to get back to work in the offseason. A lack of dedication led to mechanical flaws that plagued his game in 2016. If Bortles gets back to basics and fixes his arm issues, then he's got incredible upside with quality pass catchers around him.

Jaguars | Jags hire Keenan McCardell as WR coach    Fri Jan 20, 06:12 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired former Washington Redskins assistant coach Keenan McCardell as their new wide receivers coach.

Footballguys view: McCardell played for the Jaguars from 1996-2001, and now he's going to be coaching there. He has been a WR coach with Washington and the University of Maryland. Guys like Stefon Diggs, DeSean Jackson, Pierre Garcon and Jamison Crowder have benefited from his coaching.

Jaguars | Nathaniel Hackett to remain OC    Wed Jan 18, 06:17 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett will remain as the team's offensive coordinator.

Footballguys view: So the Jaguars have said "no" to Chip Kelly running the offense. Instead, the team will continue with Hackett. He took over at the end of October as the OC for the Jags when Greg Olson was fired. The team should continue to be balanced on offense with Hackett running the show.

Jaguars | Jaguars expected to cut Julius Thomas    Tue Jan 17, 10:40 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is expected to be released by the team this offseason, according to ESPN's Mike DiRocco. He has the fourth-highest cap figure ($8.3 million) in 2017.

Footballguys view: This wouldn't be a total surprise if it happens. Thomas has failed to play a full 16-game season in his pro career, and he's missed 11 games for the Jaguars since signing a five-year, $46 million deal with the team in 2015. When healthy, Thomas has a nose for the end zone and can create mismatches with his basketball skill set. Just don't ask him to block, and don't expect him to stay healthy. He'd get some interest, perhaps limited, if on the open market.

Jaguars | 'Good chance' Jags hire Chip Kelly as OC    Tue Jan 17, 12:51 AM

Former San Francisco 49ers and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly has a 'good chance' of being hired as the Jacksonville Jaguars' new offensive coordinator. He went into the interview believing he was going to get an offer and he already 'has some assistant hires ready.'

Footballguys view: That would be interesting....to say the least. The Jaguars offense has the pieces to be a high-powered unit if someone figures out what's wrong with QB Blake Bortles. Doug Marrone is a bright head coach, but it seems like an odd fit with Kelly running the offense. We're all for bold decisions, and this could propel Jacksonville to the next level....or it could end in spectacularly horrible fashion. You just never know with Kelly.

Jaguars | Chip Kelly talking with Jags on Monday    Mon Jan 16, 01:26 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are meeting with former San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly on Monday, Jan. 16, presumably to discuss a potential fit as an offensive coordinator.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could use some more punch on offense. They have the talent to thrive, but it all comes down to QB Blake Bortles and his development. He took a step back last year mechanically and will have to re-worked this offseason.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles still the QB    Thu Jan 12, 10:32 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was endorsed as the team's quarterback Thursday, Jan. 12, by executive vice president of football operations Tom Coughlin.

Footballguys view: They invested enough in him, and there is a strong argument that part of his massive regression this year was due to underwhelming coaching and playcalling. Bortles through more passes (625 this year vs 606 in 2015) but fewer interceptions (16 this season vs 18 last year) so there is some cause for optimism.
