Dolphins | Miami signs Winston Chapman    Tue Feb 21, 07:29 PM

Undrafted free-agent LS Winston Chapman (Mississippi State) signed with the Miami Dolphins Tuesday, Feb. 21.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas wanted to reunite with old OC    Mon Feb 20, 11:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins TE Julius Thomas restructured his contract in order to land with the Dolphins because he wanted to reunite with head coach Adam Gase, who was his old offensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Thomas did his best work with Gase running the offense in Denver. Now that they're in Miami together, we could see some of that old spark. However, Thomas has never played a full 16-game season as a pro and fantasy owners need to be ready if (when?) he gets hurt again. Thomas is a TE2 with TE1 upside in Miami.

Dolphins | Miami may pursue Brandon Williams    Mon Feb 20, 07:25 PM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent DT Brandon Williams could be a target for the Miami Dolphins this offseason if they want to make a big splash during free agency, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Dolphins | Julius Thomas reworks deal    Mon Feb 20, 06:46 PM

Miami Dolphins impending TE Julius Thomas agreed to restructure his contract as part of his trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars to the Dolphins, according to a source. Thomas was scheduled to count $8.3 million against the salary cap in 2017, $9.8 million in 2018 and $10.3 million in 2019 before the restructuring.

Footballguys view: That was part of the deal as Thomas' price tag was just too high. The Dolphins get another weapon for the passing game, and Thomas is a player who could stand out in the red zone. Reunited with Adam Gase, we'll consider Thomas a TE2 with TE1 upside in 2017.

Dolphins | Miami acquiring Julius Thomas     Mon Feb 20, 05:16 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas is being acquired by the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a late-round 2017 draft pick Monday, Feb. 20.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins don't send LT Branden Albert to the Jaguars, but they do get Thomas for a late pick. Thomas is reunited with Adam Gase, and he should step in as their lead tight end. He's a receiving weapon when healthy, and Thomas put up the best numbers of his career working under Gase when they were both with the Denver Broncos. Now, Ryan Tannehill is no Peyton Manning, but Thomas should be able to be used to the best of his ability with Gase calling the shots.

Dolphins | Miami still pursuing Julius Thomas    Sun Feb 19, 07:20 PM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert could be traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in exchange for TE Julius Thomas, according to league sources, and Albert said he wouldn't 'ruffle feathers' if he was traded.

Footballguys view: If added by the Dolphins, Thomas would be reunited with head coach Adam Gase. He put up the best numbers of his career under Gase during their time with the Broncos. If Thomas can stay healthy, something he's struggled with as a pro, he can be a dangerous weapon for any passing attack.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake could be third-down back    Sun Feb 19, 04:21 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake could be used a third-down back next season with RB Jay Ajayi as the starting running back.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins should use Drake as a change-of-pace back in 2017. He's got the speed to get to and through the hole quickly. Drake is not creative or elusive as a runner, but he could perform like a Tevin Coleman-lite for the Dolphins offense.

Dolphins | Laremy Tunsil to play left tackle    Sun Feb 19, 11:43 AM

Miami Dolphins OT Laremy Tunsil will serve as the team's starting left tackle in 2017.

Footballguys view: That's the reason they drafted him last year as their left tackle of the future. With Branden Albert likely traded away, there's a spot open and Tunsil gives them the luxury of moving Albert.

Dolphins | Cameron Wake receives extension    Sat Feb 18, 02:55 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Cameron Wake signed a two-year contract extension with the Dolphins Saturday, Feb. 18, worth $19 million, according to a source. The deal includes $11 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Wake went over double-digit sacks for the fourth time of his career with 11.5 sacks in 2016. Coming back from a torn Achilles' in 2015, Wake was in All Pro form.

Dolphins | Jordan Phillips may start    Fri Feb 17, 05:49 PM

Miami Dolphins DT Jordan Phillips is expected to start at defensive tackle in 2017 after the team released DT Earl Mitchell.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in 2015, Phillips started 11 games last year as Mitchell dealt with injuries. Phillips should start next to Ndamukong Suh and help stuff the run.

Dolphins | Miami may look at Patrick Omameh    Fri Feb 17, 05:37 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent OG Patrick Omameh could receive interest from the Miami Dolphins this offseason since head coach Adam Gase coached Omameh when they were both with the Chicago Bears.

Dolphins | Jordan Phillips likely to take over    Fri Feb 17, 04:49 PM

Miami Dolphins DT Jordan Phillips is likely to take over as one of the starting defensive tackles after the team released DT Earl Mitchell. Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph, when he was still Miami's defensive coordinator, called Phillips 'obviously a big man with talent' and 'a player that, if you can take his explosive or flash plays, you can make a tape and it's special.'

Dolphins | Julius Thomas an option for Miami?    Fri Feb 17, 02:51 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas could be included in a trade that would send Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert to the Jaguars, in the opinion of The Miami Herald's Armando Salguero.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins could use some help at the tight end position, and Thomas has experience working with head coach Adam Gase from their time with the Denver Broncos. It seems like the Jaguars are the front-runners for Albert at this time.

Dolphins | Miami makes more moves    Thu Feb 16, 05:36 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Joseph Hastings and RB Arian Foster were released from the Reserve/Retired list Thursday, Feb. 16.

Footballguys view: For Foster, this is likely the end of a career. Often exciting on the field, always exciting in an interview, Foster broke down before we were ready to see him go.

Dolphins | Branden Albert not officially released    Thu Feb 16, 05:22 PM

Dolphins | Branden Albert to be released    Thu Feb 16, 11:39 AM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert will be released Thursday, Feb. 16.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise and it looks like the market will see a lot of declining tackles this offseason. This likely means Laremy Tunsil will kick over to left tackle, which should result in the Dolphins hitting the market for a guard, and perhaps addressing that position in the draft as well.

Dolphins | Branden Albert could be on bubble    Wed Feb 15, 03:57 PM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert could be a candidate to be released this offseason since the Dolphins have OT Laremy Tunsil that can take over as the left tackle and would save $7.2 million in salary cap space if they cut Albert.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are going to have around $30 million in cap space this offseason. They don't need to free up that room by letting Albert go, but if Tunsil is ready they might go for a younger option at left tackle.

Dolphins | Possible figures for a Kenny Stills deal    Tue Feb 7, 04:22 PM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent WR Kenny Stills could demand a deal in the range of five years, $30 million and $12.5 million guaranteed, according to Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Footballguys view: A nine-touchdown year in 2016 certainly helped raise his price tag. Stills could return to the Dolphins, but he's going to get more interest than some realize. We could see a team like the Rams or the 49ers making a run at the playmaking wideout.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi hoping to build on 2016    Sat Feb 4, 10:38 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi said the 2016 season can be a 'baseline' for his career, and his goal is to have multiple consistent years while increasing his production.

Footballguys view: The rumored knee cartilage issue that caused him to fall to the fifth round isn't even in the conversation anymore. Ajayi will be drafted as a borderline RB1 in 2017 fantasy leagues.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill's knee 'stable'    Sat Feb 4, 06:52 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) has reportedly considered stem cell and platelet rich plasma injections on his injured ACL, but a source close to Tannehill though the Miami Herald this week the quarterback's knee is stable.

Footballguys view: If Tannehill is looking at alternative treatments and he has no return to play timetable to stick to right now, there's a possibility the knee isn't healing as hoped. If surgery is still in play, Tannehill and the Dolphins are playing with fire by putting it off.

Dolphins | Kiko Alonso expected to get original tender    Thu Feb 2, 12:20 PM

Miami Dolphins restricted free-agent LB Kiko Alonso is expected to receive the original-round tender offer this offseason, in the opinion of the Sun-Sentinel's Omar Kelly. The Dolphins would receive a second-round pick if they lost Alonso during free agency.

Dolphins | Returner up in the air for Miami?    Tue Jan 31, 03:18 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake could be an option in the return game if WR Jakeem Grant doesn't develop into a better return man, in the opinion of the South Florida Sun Sentinel's Omar Kelly. WR Jarvis Landry could see a decreased return role in order to lessen the hits he takes.

Footballguys view: The team spent the 73rd pick on Drake, but Jay Ajayi emerged to keep Drake's role limited in the backfield for the foreseeable future. He had a kick return for a score that won a game for the Dolphins last year, so Drake deserves more opportunities in the return game.

Dolphins | Kiko Alonso had surgery    Tue Jan 31, 02:11 PM

Miami Dolphins LB Kiko Alonso (thumb) underwent a follow-up surgery on his injured thumb soon after Miami's playoff loss, according to a source. His recovery time is expected to be six weeks.

Footballguys view: Alonso actually played 15 games heading into his restricted free agent season and was mostly a success for the Dolphins. The team should try to keep him to prop up their weak linebacker corps.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill doesn't need surgery    Mon Jan 30, 08:47 AM

Updating previous reports, Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) will not require surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament, according to sources. Tannehill had an MRI Monday, Jan. 30, to confirm the prognosis.

Footballguys view: Tannehill should be good to go for training camp, if not part of OTAs. This is good news for the Dolphins, who were flirting with the idea of playing Tannehill in the playoffs, something the Chargers did with Philip Rivers in the 2007-2008 season.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi wants Kenny Stills back    Sat Jan 28, 08:20 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi said the offense 'reaped the benefits' of having WR Kenny Stills this season. 'It'd be great for us to have him back,' Ajayi said. 'I know he wants to be back. I know the team wants him back. So whatever we need to do to make that happen, hopefully we do that.'

Footballguys view: Stills has the speed to take the top off the defense, and he worked nicely for the Dolphins in 2016. His nine touchdown grabs were a career high, and that total may end up pricing him out of the Dolphins range. According to OverTheCap.com, the Dolphins will have just over $30 million in salary cap space for 2017.

Dolphins | Kenny Stills to meet with Dolphins    Thu Jan 26, 10:44 AM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent WR Kenny Stills will meet with the team at the Senior Bowl.

Footballguys view: Stills had a solid season under head coach Adam Gase, with a career high in touchdowns (9) despite some issues under center and on the offensive line. He isn't worth a ton of money, but the Dolphins have to be pretty happy with his overall production.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi has room to grow    Wed Jan 25, 10:04 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi has 'just scratch the surface' of his potential, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: Consistency will be key for Ajayi. Half of his 1,272 yards came in three 200 yard outings, and from a production standpoint, too many of his games were under 60 yards. Clearly he has a lot of talent, and we know the injuries along the offensive line hurt him, but he needs to show he can pile up yards each week before we can rely on him in fantasy.

Dolphins | Still no decision on Ryan Tannehill's knee    Wed Jan 25, 05:08 PM

Miami Dolphins general manager Mike Tannenbaum said the team still has not decided if QB Ryan Tannehill (knee) will need to undergo knee surgery this offseason.

Footballguys view: This puts Tannehill's status for offseason workouts up in the air. If surgery is the route they go with his knee injury, Tannehill should be able to resume practicing around the time training camp kicks off in early August.

Dolphins | Jarvis Landry entering contract year    Tue Jan 24, 10:05 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2017, and he's set to earn $1.1 million.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in that amazing 2014 WR draft class, Landry has 289 catches in three seasons. Expect the Dolphins to find a way to sign Landry to a new long-term contract so he doesn't hit the open market.

Dolphins | Koa Misi likely done in Miami    Mon Jan 23, 12:59 PM

Miami Dolphins LB Koa Misi missed 13 games in 2016 with a serious neck injury, and he hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2010, making him too injury prone to be counted on as a starter, according to ESPN.com's James Walker.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are expected to overhaul their linebacking corps and cutting Misi would save the team $4.2 million. His neck injury was first thought to be career threatening, but it looks like Misi will be able to continue playing football....just not for the Dolphins most likely.

Dolphins | Mario Williams a likely salary-cap cut    Mon Jan 23, 12:53 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Mario Williams is 'almost certain' to be released this offseason, a move that would save the team $8.5 million.

Footballguys view: A healthy scratch in Week 17, the writing was on the wall with Williams. Known motivator Vance Joseph (former DC and current head coach of the Broncos) couldn't get through to Williams in 2016. Williams has plenty of "name" value, but he may only be offered "prove it" deals for the 2017 season.
