Dolphins | Nigel King waived    Mon Jul 27, 04:56 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Nigel King was waived Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Kansas this year, King was a longshot to even make the practice squad. The Dolphins have a deep and talented group of wide receivers, and King couldn't do enough to make a lasting impression in offseason workouts.

Dolphins | Miami may use more two-TE sets    Sat Jul 25, 01:14 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Dion Sims' improvement could make it possible for the Dolphins to use more two-tight end sets with fewer wide receivers on the field, according to head coach Joe Philbin. '

Footballguys view: We like both Jordan Cameron and Dion Sims. While Cameron is the more athletic of the two, Sims is a big target who could work great in the red zone. Cameron is going off the board at TE8 (8.08) in 12-team PPR leagues. Sims is going undrafted in most leagues, but with Cameron's injury history fantasy owners should keep Sims on their waiver wire speed dial.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker a candidate for PUP list    Sat Jul 25, 11:40 AM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) will not be ready for the start of training camp and could be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Head coach Joe Philbin believes Parker will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Parker is one of our favorite rookie wide receivers this year. At Louisville, Parker showed good ball-tracking ability on deep passes. He has good body control and can work routes near the sideline effectively. Parker has also shown the ability to win at the point of the catch consistently. On the PUP list to begin camp isn't a big deal as players can be activated at any time.

Dolphins | Hoping Branden Albert can avoid PUP list    Sat Jul 25, 11:39 AM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert (knee) will undergo a physical Wednesday, July 29, and could avoid the Physically Unable to Perform list if he is able to pass the physical. Head coach Joe Philbin said he would like Albert to receive some playing time in the preseason.

Footballguys view: Getting Albert on the field is going to be a boost for the Dolphins offense. People looking for "surprise" teams in the NFL should look no further than Miami. They have better weapons around QB Ryan Tannehill this year, and their defense added superstar DT Ndamukong Suh. Having Albert out there at left tackle will not only help protect Tannehill, but his presence will also help the rushing attack.

Dolphins | Josh Freeman released    Fri Jul 24, 04:49 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Freeman was released Friday, July 24.

Footballguys view: Freeman has been trying to stick around with the Dolphins as their third quarterback. The team must not have been impressed as Freeman gets his walking papers today. The Dolphins move forward with Matt Moore and McLeod Bethel-Thompson as the backup quarterbacks behind Ryan Tannehill.

Dolphins | Kenny Stills to be No. 4 WR?    Wed Jul 22, 05:46 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills could play behind WRs Jarvis Landry, Greg Jennings and rookie DeVante Parker this season, according to Chris Perkins of the Sun-Sentinel.

Footballguys view: Stills could be the deep receiver that Mike Wallace never was for the Dolphins. Now, that role is going to come in a part-time capacity this year. We're excited about this passing game, and rookie DeVante Parker could develop into a top-20 talent in the NFL...but that might come at a later date.

Dolphins | Caleb Sturgis hopes to be ready for camp    Wed Jul 22, 02:13 PM

Miami Dolphins PK Caleb Sturgis (quadriceps) hopes to be ready for the start of training camp after he suffered a quadriceps injury earlier in the offseason.

Dolphins | Kenny Stills has knack for big plays    Sat Jul 18, 09:09 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills averaged 16.5 yards per catch and had 11 receptions of 40-plus yards in his first two years in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Stills could be the deep receiver for the Dolphins that Mike Wallace just wasn't during his time in Miami. He's got the speed to take the top off the defense, and Stills does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. He's a WR4 with upside for fantasy owners in re-draft leagues.

Dolphins | Branden Albert remains on track    Sun Jul 12, 10:11 AM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert (knee) continues to make solid progress in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and still wants to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins offensive line was almost a total rebuild last year, and Albert was a big help until he went down. With Ryan Tannehill getting in tune with a whole new set of weapons, protection integrity will be key. We'll be monitoring Albert's progress in camp and the preseason.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker still on track for Week 1    Sun Jul 12, 08:45 AM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) remains on track to be ready for Week 1 and 'everything is perfect' in his recovery from foot surgery, according to Parker's agent James Gould. Gould noted it is still too early to know if Parker will be available for preseason games.

Footballguys view: Parker is the best candidate to have an Odell Beckham-esque delayed impact this year, albeit not to the degree Beckham did. He's an outstanding player at the catch point who can make things happen after the circus catch. Greg Jennings should be swept out of the top three receivers for Parker as soon as he is ready.

Dolphins | Greg Jennings may not start    Sat Jul 11, 10:25 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Greg Jennings may not be one of the team's top three receivers this season if WR DeVante Parker (foot) is healthy and WR Kenny Stills outperforms him. Jennings will be able to win one of the top three jobs if he performs well during training camp.

Dolphins | QB impressed with Greg Jennings     Sat Jul 11, 09:09 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Greg Jennings has impressed QB Ryan Tannehill with his route running. 'It's unbelievable how he can break corners down, with his savviness of how to get guys leaning,' Tannehill said. Head coach Joe Philbin also noted Jennings 'has been a quarterback-friendly type of receiver through his career. He catches the ball with his hands very well. ... He's a good route runner, crisp. He knows how to come in and out of his breaks well.'

Footballguys view: Jennings will be excellent role model for Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker, with Jarvis Landry already providing the same kind of security via routes and ball skills that Jennings does. Jennings could be as high as #2 in the pecking order to begin the season, but will probably fade as the season progresses. He's only relevant in very deep leagues, but should help the Miami offense more than he helps fantasy teams.

Dolphins | Jarvis Landry looking to improve    Fri Jul 10, 07:05 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry has been working on improving his speed this offseason to show that he is more than a slot receiver.

Footballguys view: Landry is the only returning player from the main targets for Ryan Tannehill last year. Landry doesn't have a great skillset for big plays, but he is a very dependable possession receiver and could top 100 catches this year. Consider him a high floor WR2/WR3 in PPR leagues.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi expected to make team    Fri Jul 10, 03:35 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi is expected to make the final roster out of training camp.

Footballguys view: It would be shocking if the top 100 talent didn't. He might have a larger role in 2016 when Lamar Miller is a free agent, but for now consider the multi-talented Ajayi the backup to Miller with potential to be more. Ajayi was considered a top 5 running back in this class by a lot of draft analysts but fell in the draft because of a knee issue that could be a long-term problem.

Dolphins | Miami passed on Andre Johnson    Wed Jul 8, 01:54 AM

Indianapolis Colts WR Andre Johnson said he considered playing for his hometown Miami Dolphins when he was a free agent, but the team never called him. 'I always had a dream of playing at home. I was a huge Dolphins fan. But they never called,' Johnson said Tuesday, July 7.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins restocked almost their entire WR corps this offseason too. They got a cheaper Greg Jennings to fill the veteran role after Minnesota released him. Johnson should still be a strong WR2 playing with the best QB of his career, and his fantasy value will benefit from the Dolphins lack of interest.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill showing leadership    Mon Jun 29, 04:48 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill considers himself a big leader in the Dolphins' organization. WR Kenny Stills said Tannehill has put the team on his shoulders and is letting them know that everyone must work hard every day to be successful.

Footballguys view: Tannehill took a big step forward last year, finishing as the 9th-best fantasy quarterback. This offseason, the Dolphins have put better weapons around him with the hopes that he's going to improve even more. Another 4,000 yards passing this year is quite possible, and Tannehill should throw 25-30 touchdowns in 2015. This makes him a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners.

Dolphins | Tannehill's deep passes improved    Sat Jun 27, 04:24 PM

Barry Jackson, from the Miami Herald, writes that Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill has been drawing plenty of praise from his teammates this offseason. His improved deep passes have been evident at minicamp and OTAs.

Footballguys view: It's a bit ironic that Tannehill looks better throwing deep passes after deep receiver Mike Wallace is gone. Wallace and Tannehill were rarely on the same page, and that's why the team traded the wide receiver away to the Vikings. Tannehill finished 2014 as the 9th-best fantasy quarterback, and this year he could finish as a top-10 player at his position once again.

Dolphins | No offer for Evan Mathis    Sat Jun 20, 10:06 AM

Free-agent OG Evan Mathis (Eagles) is receiving interest from the Miami Dolphins but has not received a formal offer from them at this point.

Footballguys view: Mathis is still one of the best guards in the game today, but he's reportedly seeking a contract that pays him more than $5 million annually. The Dolphins have limited salary cap space and may not be able to afford him....even though they could really use help on the interior offensive line.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker targeting Week 1    Sat Jun 13, 09:07 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) is expected to be ready by Week 1 after offseason foot surgery, president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said Saturday, June 13.

Footballguys view: What a disappointment for the Dolphins. Parker has the speed to stretch the field, and he does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. The rookie is missing out on valuable time to build chemistry with QB Ryan Tannehill. Parker may be back by Week 1, but we feel the Dolphins would ease him into the lineup at that time. If healthy, watch for Parker to turn heads in Week 5 (or so) and beyond.

Dolphins | Jordan Cameron likes QB stability     Fri Jun 12, 11:09 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Jordan Cameron blames his lack of production prior to 2013 on the revolving door at quarterback for the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: Yeah, that's got to be a big change for him. Cameron has a ton of talent, but he's yet to fully realize his potential as a pro. Most of his setbacks have come via injury, but the bad QB situation in Cleveland didn't help. Catching passes from Ryan Tannehill should boost Cameron's numbers in 2015. He's coming off the board at TE7 (7.11) in 12-team PPR leagues right now.

Dolphins | C.J. Mosley signed    Wed Jun 10, 01:49 PM

Free-agent DT C.J. M. Mosley (Dolphins) signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, June 10, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Mosley is reunited with former Lions teammate Ndamukong Suh in Miami. Playing next to Suh last year in 15 games (eight starts), Mosley recorded 26 tackles and 2.5 sacks while helping the Lions be the best run defense in the league.

Dolphins | Jarvis Landry is go-to receiver    Tue Jun 9, 12:31 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry and QB Ryan Tannehill have developed a nice rapport during organized team activities (OTAs), and he is expected to be the go-to receiver heading into the regular season.

Footballguys view: Tannehill targeted Landry 112 times last year, and that number should rise this season. Landry can be a reliable receiver on underneath routes, and he can make plays after the catch. Currently, Landry has an ADP of WR24 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker to miss some camp    Tue Jun 9, 12:30 AM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) might be limited for the start of training camp, QB Ryan Tannehill hinted Monday, June 8.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are going to be cautious with their talented rookie. Parker should be a great deep threat for the team as he works for targets behind Jarvis Landry with guys like Greg Jennings and Kenny Stills. He may start camp on the PUP list if his recovery is going slower than desired.

Dolphins | Rishard Matthews showing well    Tue Jun 9, 12:30 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Rishard Matthews has strung together several strong practices at organized team activities (OTAs).

Footballguys view: Reports earlier this year indicated that Matthews was unhappy and wanted to be released or traded. Obviously the Dolphins didn't move him, and now he'll have to compete with guys like Kenny Stills, Greg Jennings and rookie DeVante Parker.

Dolphins | Tommy Streeter signed    Mon Jun 8, 01:19 PM

Free-agent WR Tommy Streeter (Jaguars) signed with the Miami Dolphins Monday, June 8, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick for the Baltimore Ravens in the 2012 NFL draft, Streeter has bounced around to a few different teams during his short pro career. He played in college for the Miami Hurricanes, and now he'll try to make the Dolphins. Streeter has speed to take the top off the defense, but he must improve his hands, ball-tracking ability and concentration if he ever wants to make an impact at the pro level.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker update    Fri Jun 5, 11:44 AM

Updating an earlier report, Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) will miss eight weeks following surgery on his left foot.

Footballguys view: Parker has the potential to be a big part of this offense. His speed and ball-tracking ability will come in handy on deep targets. This foot injury is going to keep him from practicing for the rest of OTAs, but Parker should be ready before the preseason begins.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker has surgery    Fri Jun 5, 11:04 AM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (foot) had surgery on his left foot Friday, June 5, but is expected to be ready for the season. If this were the regular season, Parker could play this week.

Footballguys view: Parker has been incredibly impressive this offseason during minicamp and OTAs, so the plan with him is to be a long-term piece rather than a short-term bridge. The Dolphins are being cautious to address with this minor injury so it doesn't affect the season.

Dolphins | LaMichael James ahead in battle    Tue Jun 2, 01:36 AM

Miami Dolphins RB LaMichael James is ahead of RB Mike Gillislee for the No. 4 running back job to start organized team activities (OTAs).

Footballguys view: James is much more explosive than Gillislee. The RB4 with the Dolphins isn't going to get much work, so fantasy owners should not be locked into this battle.

Dolphins | Mike Gillislee down on depth chart    Tue Jun 2, 01:34 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Mike Gillislee is behind RB LaMichael James for the No. 4 running back job to start organized team activities (OTAs).

Footballguys view: Gillislee hasn't done much as a pro. Coming out of Florida he was compared to a poor-man's version of Knowshon Moreno. It sounds like he's not even going to reach that potential.

Dolphins | Improved Red Zone offense this year?    Sun May 31, 06:42 PM

James Walker, from ESPN.com, reports the Dolphins have worked hard this offseason to improve their red-zone offense. Last year, Miami only scored on 51.5 percent of their trips into the red zone. That rate ranked 21 of 32 in the NFL, so the Dolphins went out of their way to add big targets like tight end Jordan Cameron (6'5") and rookie wide receiver DeVante Parker (6'3").

Footballguys view: The targets added (and subracted, Mike Wallace) should greatly help quarterback Ryan Tannehill. The Dolphins will still use Lamar Miller to pick up the tough yards on the ground, but they could try to connect on some jump passes when they get close to pay dirt. A more efficient red-zone offense will boost Tannehill's fantasy numbers....and consistency. Add Tannehill as a QB2 (current ADP of QB13, 9.10) with QB1 upside.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker impressing    Wed May 27, 04:19 PM

Miami Dolphins rookie WR DeVante Parker has already gained the attention of QB Ryan Tannehill. 'He's a good player. You can see his athleticism, his natural ability, already,' Tannehill said. 'He made a bunch of good catches [Tuesday] -- catches where he's using his body, keeping the defender off of him. He catches the ball with his hands.'

Footballguys view: Parker can be a stud in the NFL. He's got the body control and concentration to work well near the sidelines or in the back of the end zone. Parker's got an outstanding catch radius and understanding of how to use his frame to shield defenders away from the ball. He'll compete with Kenny Stills and Greg Jennings to establish a pecking order behind Jarvis Landry.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill likes WR corps    Wed May 27, 11:25 AM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill praised his largely rebuilt wide receivers corps Tuesday, May 26, saying this is the most athletic group he has worked with in the NFL. He also praised them for being natural hands-catchers.

Footballguys view: We agree with Tannehill, as there's a lot to like about the wide receivers in place. The Dolphins traded away Mike Wallace as he was a player who didn't have good chemistry with Tannehill, and they've added better weapons around him. We'll see if Tannehill can cement himself as a top-12 fantasy QB in 2015.

Dolphins | Louis Delmas practices    Tue May 26, 08:26 PM

Miami Dolphins FS Louis Delmas (knee) participated in organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Head coach Joe Philbin said Delmas moved around well during practice.

Footballguys view: A fantastic recovery here for the veteran safety. Delmas is less than six months removed from his knee injury, and now he's on track to be a full participant for training camp.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker impressive at OTAs    Tue May 26, 08:19 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker faced CB Brent Grimes during organized team activities Tuesday, May, 26, and made several terrific catches. Parker shared first-team snaps with WR Greg Jennings.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised by this news. Parker has star upside in the pros, and that's why the Dolphins picked him up in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft. He has outstanding body control and can make difficult catches seem routine. He has the size, wingspan and leaping ability to play "above the rim" in the red zone. We love Parker's upside as a pro.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi to compete for starting RB?    Mon May 25, 03:40 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi is considered the No. 2 running back at this point and could potentially challenge RB Lamar Miller for the starting running back position.

Footballguys view: Ajayi is incredibly talented, but concerns about the long-term health of his knee caused him to fall to the fifth round of the 2015 NFL draft. He's a strong inside runner with the ability to win after contact. Ajayi can create his own space with shoulder dips, juke moves and head fakes. He's also a fine receiver out of the backfield. Miller is in the final year of his contract, and Ajayi should take over as the RB1 next year -- but he could be the lead back sooner than some think.

Dolphins | Branden Albert expected to play Week 1    Fri May 22, 03:45 PM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert (knee) is still recovering from his torn anterior cruciate ligament, but it is reasonable to expect him to play in Week 1 next season, according to general manager Dennis Hickey.

Footballguys view: Getting Albert back will boost the Dolphins rushing attack, and it will help better protect Ryan Tannehill. The team will monitor the veteran tackle's progress through training camp.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill contract breakdown    Thu May 21, 12:09 PM

Updating previous reports, Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill will earn $12.2 million in 2015, but only $745,000 of it will be in base salary. His 2016 base salary of $9.34 million is fully guaranteed. In 2017, the Dolphins will have five days into the league year to decide whether to fully guarantee his $17.47 million base salary, which essentially gives the Dolphins an opt-out if Tannehill struggles to meet expectations over the next two seasons. His contract contains no guaranteed money in 2019 and 2020, other than the prorated signing bonus, so Miami could save $17 million in 2019 and $18 million in 2020 by releasing him.

Footballguys view: So this is really a 2-3 year contract with no guaranteed money in the back half of it. The onus continues to be on Tannehill to prove he is a franchise quarterback. The Dolphins had to get something done, because even as an average quarterback, Tannehill is one of only 15-20 sure-fire starters in the NFL. His ADP in redraft is right in the middle of drafts - around round nine or ten - and we see him as just outside QB1 status.

Dolphins | Lamar Miller entering contract year    Wed May 20, 11:57 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller enters the final year of his rookie contract and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2016, according to Spotrac.com. Miller appears poised to headline the free-agent running back class with another strong season and could be playing for a big contract.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins have prepared for life without Miller with the addition of Jay Ajayi (Boise State) in the 2015 NFL draft. Miller cracked 1,000 yards rushing last year and he bulked up to around 225 pounds this offseason to hold up to the punishment he'll take as the lead back. Another good year could mean Miller gets a big payday in 2016.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill signs extension    Mon May 18, 04:13 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill signed an extension through the 2020 season Monday, May 18. Tannehill's new deal includes four new contract years and up to $77 million in new money. The deal is worth $95.27 million over six total years, with options for 2015 and 2016 added in.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins secure their franchise quarterback with a new long-term deal. He's steadily improved as a pro, and Tannehill could take a big step forward in 2015. The Dolphins have put much better weapons around him this season with the addition of guys like Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker and Jordan Cameron. Tannehill should be a top-10 fantasy quarterback in 2015.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi says he is fine    Sun May 10, 10:08 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi said he feels great and there is nothing wrong with his knee. Head coach Joe Philbin said Ajayi will be given opportunities to prove his value to the team during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Picking up Ajayi was a fantastic move for the Dolphins. He can learn the ropes this year, then take over as the lead back if (when) Lamar Miller moves on in free agency next year. Ajayi played with knee issues last season and still had over 1,800 yards rushing for Boise State. His workload over the last three seasons (678 carries) might be a concern for some. Ajayi won't have to carry the load this season for the Dolphins, but he's a future starter and a potential star. Drafting him in the fifth round could be a huge steal for the Dolphins.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker doing well at workouts    Sun May 10, 09:59 AM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker made several impressive catches during practice Saturday, May 9. Parker has showed fluid movement in his routes and has made several difficult catches during the rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised by this news item. Parker is an incredibly gifted receiver with long speed, soft hands and the ability to make difficult catches seem routine. It will be interesting to see how much QB Ryan Tannehill can take that next step this season with so much improved talent around him.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker adds new dimension?    Fri May 8, 10:29 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker is the type of receiver the offense has been lacking, according to former WR O.J. McDuffie. 'We don't have anybody that will go attack the football, nobody to go get it,' McDuffie said Friday, May 8. 'On 50-50 balls, he's got to be the guy right at the beginning of the season that, covered or uncovered, he's got to go up and get that ball at its high point. Right away he's got to be in the mix.'

Footballguys view: We have the feeling Parker is going to be everything for the Dolphins that Mike Wallace (Vikings) wasn't. Parker has the speed to get by the defense in the blink of an eye. He does a good job of tracking deep passes, and Parker will regularly win at the point of the catch.

Dolphins | Lamar Miller the lead back?    Thu May 7, 09:42 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller is expected to be the No. 1 back heading into the 2015 season, according to The Miami Herald.

Footballguys view: He's the lead back, but we'll see rookie Jay Ajayi mixed in this season. Miller is in the final year of his contract, and this is probably his final season with the Dolphins. Ajayi has the skill set to take over as the starter in 2016.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker signs with Miami    Thu May 7, 06:14 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker signed a four-year deal worth $10.9 million Thursday, May 7. The deal includes a $6.2 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: We love this move for the Dolphins. Parker has the good speed to get open on deep routes. He has good body control and elite concentration as evidenced by his three drops since 2012. Parker can win at the point of the catch, and he does a good job of snaring passes at their highest point. Look for him to earn a starting job opposite Jarvis Landry at some point (Week 1?) in 2015.

Dolphins | Jay Ajayi agrees to deal with MIA    Thu May 7, 05:20 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal Thursday, May 7.

Footballguys view: Ajayi is a supremely talented running back with the skills to impress as both a runner and receiver out of the backfield. A knee injury that some reports said was bone-on-bone caused him to fall to the fifth round in the 2015 NFL draft. When healthy, Ajayi has the ability to be a three-down back and effective starter as a pro. He'll back up Lamar Miller this year, but Miller's in a contract year meaning Ajayi could be the lead man in Miami next season.
