Dolphins | Miami shopping Mike Wallace    Wed Feb 25, 09:59 PM

The Miami Dolphins do not plan to cut WR Mike Wallace just yet. They are exploring the trade route not just on Wallace's play, but also his fit in the locker room. He removed himself from the regular season finale, and had a shouting match with head coach Joe Philbin afterwards. Wallace is due $9.85 million in 2015, part of a five-year, $60 million deal that runs through 2017.

Dolphins | Three Miami receivers could be cut    Wed Feb 25, 03:39 PM

Miami Dolphins WRs Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson could all be let go this offseason if contracts aren't restructured. Wallace, especially, likely won't take a paycut on the $9.85 million he's due next season. Hartline is due $5.9 million but could restructure this offseason. Gibson isn't believed to be worth the $3.225 million he's due, so he could also be gone.

Footballguys view: They couldn't cut all three could they? We don't think that happens, but they're likely to take a look at restructuring all three of these receivers. Wallace has been the biggest disappointment here (with the biggest price tag).

The Miami Dolphins would like to keep WR Rishard Matthews, who has a low cap number of just $673,403.

Dolphins | Brandon Gibson facing uncertainty    Wed Feb 25, 02:03 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Brandon Gibson has a cap number of $4.3 million for 2015. He has not been told by the team what their plans are for him next season.

Dolphins | Brian Hartline costly in 2015    Wed Feb 25, 02:02 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Brian Hartline has not been informed of his status for 2015, but he has a current cap number of $7.3 million.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine the Dolphins keeping him around at that price tag. Hartline has $4.2 million left in dead money on his contract, so perhaps the team is going to restructure his deal instead of releasing him.

Dolphins | Koa Misi could move positions    Wed Feb 25, 02:02 AM

Miami Dolphins LB Koa Misi could be moved from middle to strong-side linebacker if the team acquires a starting-caliber linebacker in free agency. Head coach Joe Philbin said the move of Misi to middle linebacker last season did not work out 'as well as I would have liked it to work.'

Dolphins | Expected to pursue David Harris    Wed Feb 25, 02:00 AM

Dolphins | Charles Clay likely to receive big salary    Mon Feb 23, 01:39 PM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to receive at least $6 million per season in his next contract, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The franchise tag number for tight ends is around $7.4 million. Clay is not quite at that level, but he does deserve a deal that pays him around $6 million annually. The Dolphins want to keep him around, but we'll see if they're willing to pay that price.

Dolphins | Still comfortable with Ryan Tannehill    Fri Feb 20, 02:11 AM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill still has a backer in general manager Dennis Hickey, who admitted average salaries for starting quarterbacks are going up but the team is still high on Tannehill as a starter.

Footballguys view: Tannehill has flashed during his time in the pros, the Dolphins just need to do a better job of protecting him and put better weapons around him. The Mike Wallace experience has not gone as planned, but we do like the potential of Jarvis Landry. The Dolphins will likely keep Charles Clay around in free agency, and that is a rock-solid move. Tannehill's numbers under duress are some of the best in the NFL--a good sign for the young quarterback.

Dolphins | Jarvis Landry working to improve    Sun Feb 15, 07:18 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Jarvis Landry has already started working at a training facility in Arizona with New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. trying to improve his explosiveness. 'I had to beg him to take time off,' his agent said. 'He wants to show people he's an outside receiver, not just a slot receiver.'

Footballguys view: Landry has untapped talent and potential as a pro receiver. Yes, he's not quite Beckham (who is?) in terms of crazy catches, but Landry can be a quality target who gets open consistently. We like how these two college teammates at LSU have constantly pushed each other to be better. Try to land Landry in your dynasty league for a lower offer if you can.

Dolphins | Addressing backup QB situation    Fri Feb 13, 02:17 AM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill and his contract extension will be a big priority in the offseason, but the Dolphins plan to secure a solid backup quarterback in free agency. Miami Herald reporter Armando Salguero speculates QB Matt Moore, who was the Dolphins' backup in 2014 and is an unrestricted free agent, may be the best option.

Dolphins | Ryan Taylor signing    Tue Feb 10, 06:16 PM

Free-agent TE Ryan Taylor (Browns) is signing with the Miami Dolphins Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Footballguys view: Taylor is now the second former Green Bay Packers tight end (Jake Stoneburner) on the Dolphins roster. He'll compete for a backup position in 2015. Taylor was a seventh-round pick by the Packers in 2011, the last year Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin was the OC in Green Bay.

Dolphins | Mike Wallace meets with GM    Sun Feb 8, 10:03 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace recently had a meal with general manager Dennis Hickey, but the team still is undecided about Wallace's future with the team, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wallace made a lot of money last year (over $17MM), but he keeps underperforming when compared to other top receivers in the NFL. This season, Wallace has a $12 million cap number with over $6 million remaining in dead money.

Dolphins | Miami likely won't bring Knowshon back    Wed Feb 4, 11:46 PM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent RB Knowshon Moreno (elbow) is unlikely to be back in 2015, according to beat writer James Walker.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Knowshon has entered the "veteran waiting around for an injury" point of his career. This is a strong free agent RB class, and the draft is chock full of talent at the position. We doubt Moreno draws much interest on the open market.

Dolphins | Miami want to re-sign Charles Clay    Sun Jan 25, 10:34 AM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player that the Dolphins would like to re-sign and are expected to offer him a contract in the next few weeks.

Footballguys view: It's a wise move for the Dolphins. Clay is a versatile player who can be a dangerous asset on the field. Last year, Clay had 58 catches for 605 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games. The Dolphins also have an emerging talent in Dion Sims, so don't expect them to break the bank to keep Clay. He'll have to sign a team-friendly deal to stick around in 2015.

Dolphins | Mike Wallace wants to return to Miami    Fri Jan 23, 09:31 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace said he wants to return to the team next season, but he added that he would welcome testing the free agent market if the team chooses to release him.

Footballguys view: Wallace has made quite a bit of money with the Dolphins, but he's been a bit of an odd fit. After two years, he's still not on the same page with QB Ryan Tannehill on deep passes. He has a $12.1 million cap number in 2015, but there's still $6.6 million left in dead money on his contract.

Dolphins | Branden Albert making progress    Fri Jan 23, 03:58 PM

Miami Dolphins OT Branden Albert (knee) is making good progress in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn medial collateral ligament, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Having a healthy Albert on the field is a great boost for the Dolphins. This is good news, but expect the team to ease him back in when he's ready to practice. The team and their doctors are encouraged about how quick Albert has made progress in his rehab.

Dolphins | GM praises Ryan Tannehill    Thu Jan 22, 04:35 AM

Miami Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey had praise for QB Ryan Tannehill, saying the team is 'excited' about his progress to date. "We are excited about [Tannehill's] future as a Dolphin. ... We saw a lot of progress [in 2014]," Hickey said.

Footballguys view: Tannehill was expected to take a leap forward but at the end of the day he stumbled a bit. Is it the coaching, is it his weapons or is it him? The Dolphins feel there is progress, but is there enough to warrant an extension for Tannehill? He is in the final year of his rookie contract and the team has to figure out what they want to do with their young quarterback.

Dolphins | GM non-committal on Mike Wallace    Wed Jan 21, 09:00 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace's future with the team is unclear. General manager Dennis Hickey would not say Wednesday, Jan. 21, whether Wallace will be back or if his end of season drama will play into the decision. Wallace said everything is being evaluated.

Footballguys view: Of course they're non-committal. It's hard to be "all in" on a receiver who has failed to live up to his large contract. Wallace had a $17 million cap number in 2014, but that number falls to $12.1 million in 2015. With only $6.6 million left in dead money, it's not out of the question to think the team would consider cutting ties with the underachieving veteran.

Dolphins | Owner unsure about Mike Wallace's status    Fri Jan 16, 04:54 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace's status for next season is not known at this point, according to owner Stephen Ross. Ross said he is not sure if anyone in the organization knows if Wallace will remain with the team.

Footballguys view: Wallace had a $17 million cap hit in 2014, but that number drops to $12.1 million in 2015. He scored 10 touchdowns in 2014, but Wallace still seems to lack chemistry with quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Wallace is known as a speedy deep target, but his 12.8 yards per catch ranked 44th in the league last year. He ran 452 routes (31st) and was targeted 111 times (30th) in 2014 as well.

Dolphins | Mike Wallace quit multiple times    Mon Jan 12, 10:20 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace has reportedly quit on the team multiple times this season. He told his position coach before halftime of the season finale, and later repeated it to his head coach, that if he wasn't getting the football thrown to him, there was no need for him to play. He allegedly did the same thing in Week 15 against the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Making $17 million in 2014 wasn't enough for Wallace. He wants the ball more--and that's not a bad thing--but there are proper ways to go about getting it. We'll see if the two sides part ways at some point before the start of the 2015 season.

Dolphins | No pay cut for Mike Wallace    Sun Jan 11, 12:19 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace is not willing to accept a pay cut this offseason, according to a source.

Footballguys view: He doesn't want to take a pay cut, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. Wallace is scheduled to count $12.1 million against the salary cap in 2015. The Dolphins still owe him $9.6 million in dead money. Post June 1st, that amount would fall to $5.2 million.

Dolphins | Mike Wallace's status for 2015 uncertain    Sat Jan 10, 08:44 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace's roster spot could be in jeopardy next season, because he is scheduled to make $9.9 million in 2015 with $3 million of the salary becoming guaranteed in the first week of March.

Footballguys view: You just had a feeling after his cap number was $17 million in 2014, Wallace might not be on the roster unless he had an outstanding year. Having 67 catches for 862 yards is not outstanding...although the 10 receiving touchdowns in 2014 was nice. Executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum said the team will make the most responsible decision for them on Wallace.

Dolphins | Joe Philbin to receive extension    Wed Jan 7, 09:40 PM

Miami Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin will receive a contract extension, a club source close to owner Stephen Ross said Wednesday, Jan. 7. Philbin would have been entering the final year of his contract.

Footballguys view: This move will prevent Miami from having a lame-duck head coach....but it won't prevent them from having a lame one. It's an interesting move by Ross because Philbin's time in Miami has been mostly filled with disappointment and underachieving. We'll see if they can turn the defense around and play more consistently in 2015.

Dolphins | Have not spoken to Rex Ryan     Wed Dec 31, 11:58 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent coach Rex Ryan (Jets) has not been contacted by the Miami Dolphins to become the team's defensive coordinator, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Ryan's not going to be a coordinator. He' going to get an opportunity as a head coach somewhere....or he'll go into television.

Dolphins | Six signed to Futures contracts    Tue Dec 30, 07:26 PM

The Miami Dolphins signed OT Mark Asper, QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson, DE Emmanuel Dieke, LB Jake Knott, DB Lowell Rose and TE Jake Stoneburner to Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: We're keeping tabs on Stoneburner in super deep dynasty leagues. He's an athletic tight end who can create mismatches on the field. The former Ohio State wide receiver was added by the Green Bay Packers after going undrafted in 2013, but he was released with an injury settlement earlier in 2014.

Dolphins | Mike Wallace denies quitting    Mon Dec 29, 11:22 AM

Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins WR Mike Wallace denied the report that he took himself out of the game Sunday, Dec. 28, in Week 17. Wallace said he was told he wasn't going back in for the second half. Wallace said he'd like to remain with the team, but it isn't his decision. He denied any potential rift with the coaching staff. 'I like my coach,' Wallace said. 'They go about their business the right way. They create a good game plan.'

Footballguys view: Um, okay. The mystery continues here. Wallace had a $17 million cap number in 2014, but that number shrinks to $12.1 million in 2015. However, there's still over $9 million left in dead money. The Dolphins should find a way to work things out with Wallace because his price tag is so high.

Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill tops 4,000 yards    Sun Dec 28, 04:24 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill threw for 259 yards in Week 17 versus the New York Jets, giving him 4,045 for the season. Only QB Dan Marino has thrown for 4,000 yards or more as a member of the Dolphins. Tannehill finished with 27 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions in his third NFL season.

Footballguys view: Tannehill made some strides with new offensive coordinator Bill Lazor, and the offensive line was much better than 2013 at keeping him upright. It sounds like Joe Philbin will be back for another year to foster Tannehill and the Dolphins' growth in 2015.

Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller posted a 178 yards on 19 carries (9.4 yards per attempt) and scored on a 97-yard touchdown run in a 37-24 loss to the New York Jets in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Miller's speed hadn't really had a chance to be on display this year, but the Dolphins trusted him more at the end of the season, and he responded with some big games. He could be in line for a bigger opportunity in 2015.
