Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to start next game    Sat Aug 17, 01:33 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick likely will be the starting quarterback for the third preseason game, according to head coach Brian Flores.

Footballguys view: That's a good sign that Fitzpatrick will begin the regular season as the starter. Nothing is set in stone of course, but the competition between Fitzpatrick and Josh Rosen will continue for another week or so.

Dolphins | Nick O'Leary looking like Fins' best TE    Thu Aug 15, 02:53 PM

Miami Dolphins TE Nick O'Leary is the team's best pass-catching option at the position, according to Armando Salguero of The Miami Herald.

Footballguys view: This has been the consistent word out of Dolphins camp. While O'Leary is playing well, second-year TE Mike Gesicki continues to struggle both with blocking and pass-catching.

Dolphins | Isaiah Ford impressing    Thu Aug 15, 11:25 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Isaiah Ford has consistently worked with the starters and had a strong week of practice. He's expected to play with the starters in the second preseason game.

Footballguys view: Ford was a Matt Waldman favorite and the regime change in Miami gives him an opening to make the team. It sounds like he is taking advantage of it.

Dolphins | Albert Wilson on the mend    Thu Aug 15, 11:22 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson (hip) is hopeful to begin team drills next week, and he is on track to play in Week 1.

Footballguys view: Wilson's return has been slow and he still hasn't built any rapport with the Dolphins new quarterbacks in the team's new offensive system. Kenny Stills could be a big factor in the slot early if Wilson and Jakeem Grant are not yet full speed to open the season.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage assumes top spot for now    Wed Aug 14, 11:16 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage will serve as the team's starting running back until RB Kenyan Drake (foot) is ready to return.

Footballguys view: Ballage will have a tough draw Week 1 against the Ravens if he starts, but he'll be worth a flex play. Mark Walton projects as the third down back for now, although he could face a suspension.

Dolphins | DeVante Parker not on field    Wed Aug 14, 02:10 PM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Parker has failed to play up to his potential as a pro and has never played a full 16-game season. He was dominating in the spring and in training camp so far, and Parker was healthy. We'll see if they tell us what's going on here. Parker wants 1,000 yards this year and wants to prove to the new staff that he's worth keeping around in the future.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake available for Week 1?    Wed Aug 14, 02:07 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (foot) will miss some time because of a foot injury, but head coach Brian Flores said the team hopes Drake will be ready for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Drake has been seen in a walking boot, but Flores is downplaying the situation. He's unlikely to play in the preseason but the team is emphasizing that he'll be back for the season opener. Without Drake on the field, second-year back Kalen Ballage will work as the Dolphins starter.

Dolphins | Josh Rosen running with ones    Wed Aug 14, 01:06 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen is working with the first-team offense Wednesday, Aug. 14, and is receiving 'true starter burn' this week in practice, according to beat writer Cameron Wolfe.

Footballguys view: We'll see this back-and-forth until the Dolphins decide on who the starting quarterback should be. Rosen is competing with veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for that top spot. All reports indicate that Fitzpatrick is in the lead, but we'll see if Rosen can make up some ground getting a 'true starter burn'...whatever that is.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake in a walking boot    Wed Aug 14, 10:16 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (leg) was wearing a walking boot Wednesday, Aug. 14, after leaving practice the previous day.

Footballguys view: Dolphins head coach Brian Flores is downplaying the boot situation and insists that Drake should be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. We are unlikely to see Drake in the rest of the preseason, and second-year back Kalen Ballage should take over as the starter while Drake is on the mend.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake limps off practice field    Tue Aug 13, 07:03 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake (lower body) limped off the practice field Tuesday, Aug. 13, due to an apparent lower-body injury. Head coach Brian Flores didn't offer specifics after practice but said 'hopefully he's back out there tomorrow.'

Footballguys view: Bad news for Drake here. He's getting pushed by Kalen Ballage for the starting job in 2019 and this injury could help the team make that decision. We'll see how bad this lower body injury is and will get more information if Drake does or does not practice on Wednesday.

Dolphins | Another start for Ryan Fitzpatrick?    Tue Aug 13, 12:53 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick could start a second straight preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, when the Dolphins visit the Buccaneers, head coach Brian Flores said Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick is ahead of Josh Rosen in the competition for the starting job with the Dolphins. We have a feeling no matter who begins the season as the starter, both quarterbacks should play at some point in the 2019 season.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage scores in win    Fri Aug 9, 01:12 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage rushed six times for 23 yards and a touchdown and failed to catch either of his targets in a 34-27 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: Ballage was mostly unimpressive. After lots of buzz that he could push Kenyan Drake for the starting job, Ballage is losing momentum.

Dolphins | Long look for Josh Rosen    Fri Aug 9, 01:06 AM

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen completed 13 of his 20 passes for 191 yards and an interception and rushed once for six yards in a 34-27 preseason win over the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: Rosen mostly made hay throwing it up under pressure and letting UDFA Preston Williams make plays. He's not ahead of Ryan Fitzpatrick yet to start Week 1, but he's still alive.

Dolphins | Robert Nkemdiche signs with Miami    Thu Aug 8, 10:19 AM

Free-agent DT Robert Nkemdiche (Cardinals) signed an undisclosed deal with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: Nkemdiche (knee) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list. He's still recovering from the knee injury that put him on Injured Reserve last December for the Cardinals. Nkemdiche's career has been set back by injuries but he's a good player for the Dolphins to take a chance on. It's a low risk move with some upside as a reward if Nkemdiche gets healthy and plays well.

Dolphins | Lofty goal for DeVante Parker    Thu Aug 8, 12:40 AM

Miami Dolphins WR DeVante Parker said his goal is to reach 1,000 yards receiving this season.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation as the press has all been positive about Parker's performance in OTAs, minicamp and now training camp. Parker needs to stay healthy and finally play up to the potential that made him a first-round pick back in 2015.

Dolphins | Mike Gesicki struggling    Wed Aug 7, 02:02 AM

Miami Dolphins TE Mike Gesicki has had an 'uneven' training camp so far, according to Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Gesicki has been uneven during all offseason workouts according to reports. The second-year tight end is competing with Dwayne Allen for the starting job in 2019.

Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick working with ones    Tue Aug 6, 09:28 AM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will likely play with the first-team offense Thursday, Aug. 8, in the first preseason game, according to head coach Brian Flores. QB Josh Rosen is slated for the second-team, but Flores said that could change.

Footballguys view: This quarterback battle is wide open and trending towards Rosen, but preseason games will decide it. Just as important as the identity of the winner is noting which receiver have the best chemistry with the winner.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake stands out in practice    Mon Aug 5, 01:22 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake had the best day of practice Monday, Aug. 5, according to Sun-Sentinel writer Omar Kelly. Drake was ranked No. 1 in a list of three performers to excel, with Kelly citing Drake being 'elusive all day in space.'

Footballguys view: Drake is having a solid camp, but it's clear that the Dolphins want a committee with him and Kalen Ballage as the top two backs. Mark Walton, a very good third down back, is also having a strong camp and will take away some passing down opportunities.

Dolphins | Josh Rosen pushing to start?    Sun Aug 4, 09:33 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Rosen made some 'remarkable throws' during practice Saturday, Aug. 3, according to Adam H. Beasley of The Miami Herald, and Beasley believes Rosen 'just might be' the starting quarterback when practice resumes Monday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Rosen will probably have to outplay Ryan Fitzpatrick decisively to win the job, but that's exactly what has been happening in recent practices. Fitzpatrick is better for the fantasy prospects in Miami, but Rosen is better for the Dolphins long term plans.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage returns to the field    Sat Aug 3, 10:26 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage (undisclosed) returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 3, and saw time with the starters.

Footballguys view: Ballage should be a big part of this backfield in any scenario, and he has a chance to start. Getting back on the field quickly after a short absence helps his case.

Dolphins | Jakeem Grant remains out    Sat Aug 3, 10:16 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant (hamstring) did not participate in practice Saturday, Aug. 3.

Footballguys view: Grant is competing for snaps in what could be a surprising pass offense because of game scripts and the possibility of Ryan Fitzpatrick starting, who will be an aggressive passer. Grant is a candidate for slot snaps along with Albert Wilson and some deep routes because of his speed.

Dolphins | Reshad Jones wearing a boot    Sat Aug 3, 02:22 PM

Miami Dolphins SS Reshad Jones (undisclosed) was wearing a walking boot on his right foot during practice Saturday, Aug. 3.

Footballguys view: Jones wasn't even a sure thing to be on this team after the rift between him and the organization grew last year. There was some speculation that he could get dealt, but an injury would reduce the chances of that to zero.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage a no go    Thu Aug 1, 09:55 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage (undisclosed) remained out of practice Thursday, Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: Ballage has a chance to be the starter, but this will be a committee in any event. He's worth a late round flier but will need a Kenyan Drake injury to truly matter in fantasy leagues, and right now Drake is the healthier back.

Dolphins | Jakeem Grant sidelined    Thu Aug 1, 07:08 PM

Miami Dolphins WR Jakeem Grant (hamstring) is not participating in practice because of a mild hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Grant is super fast and super quick...he's simply electric when the ball is in his hands. A hamstring injury can rob him of his best skill. The Dolphins are going to wise and monitor him closely as he recovers.

Dolphins | Another committee for Kenyan Drake?    Thu Aug 1, 02:27 PM

Miami Dolphins RBs Kenyan Drake and Kalen Ballage could possibly end up playing similar roles to James White and Sony Michel, respectively, under new offensive coordinator Chad O'Shea in 2019. ESPN's Cameron Wolfe made an early touch split prediction of 45/40/15 for the Dolphins' backs, with Ballage on the high end of that, followed by Drake and then a combination of the other Miami backs after that.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Ballage is getting a lot of pub and hype during training camp for the Dolphins. He's a larger back and good as a receiver out of the backfield. Drake has speed and moves but the team seems intent only on using him as a committee back.

Dolphins | No practice for Kalen Ballage    Wed Jul 31, 04:29 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Wednesday, July 31.

Footballguys view: Ballage has been getting plenty of hype as the potential lead back in the Dolphins offense this year. He's a big-bodied back who does not run with as much power as you'd think. Ballage is a better receiver out of the backfield than he showed last year and is in a competition with Kenyan Drake for the top spot on the depth chart. No matter who wins the job, the Dolphins should use a RBBC in 2019.

Dolphins | Dwayne Allen activated    Wed Jul 31, 10:11 AM

Miami Dolphins TE Dwayne Allen (undisclosed) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 31.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins don't have a great tight end situation but Allen should be their top guy if healthy. He's a blocker and second-year pro Mike Gesicki is the receiving threat. Neither make for great fantasy assets in 2019.

Dolphins | Ryan Fitzpatrick has early edge    Tue Jul 30, 01:52 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick has the early edge over Josh Rosen in the battle to start at quarterback, head coach Brian Flores said Tuesday, July 30. 'It's pretty clear to me that Ryan Fitzpatrick is leading the way,' Flores said. 'He's done that in a lot of areas, from leadership to production on the field to the meeting rooms to the walk-throughs. This is an ongoing competition, but right now he's leading the way.'

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick can support multiple fantasy relevant receivers with his aggressive approach, so this is good news for Kenny Stills, Albert Wilson, and DeVante Parker. Fitzpatrick could even be a viable DFS GPP play in the right matchup.

Dolphins | Miami parts with Pat Flaherty    Mon Jul 29, 03:06 PM

Miami Dolphins offensive line coach Pat Flaherty was fired and replaced by analyst Dave DeGuglielmo on Monday, July 29.

Footballguys view: DeGuglielmo oversaw the rebuild of the Colts offensive line last year. He should be an excellent fit for a team building from the ground up.

Dolphins | Albert Wilson practicing Sunday    Sun Jul 28, 11:04 AM

Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson (hip) is in full pads and practicing Sunday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Wilson seems to be fully over the hip injury that ended his 2018 and kept him from practicing this spring. He'll be in line for a lot of targets and snaps in the slot if he can stay healthy, although Jakeem Grant will have something to say about that.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage pushing to start    Fri Jul 26, 10:56 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage has a 'real chance' to open the year as the starting running back, according to Cameron Wolfe of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Ballage has the size to be an effective early-down runner...but he's not necessarily a runner that wins with power. Instead, he's a bit more nimble than a man his size should be. Ballage is also a better receiver than some think. We'll see if the second-year pro can win the starting job over Kenyan Drake.

Dolphins | Kenyan Drake focused on himself    Fri Jul 26, 09:48 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Kenyan Drake said he isn't worrying about splitting reps with RB Kalen Ballage during the first two days of training camp. 'There's only one ball,' Drake said Friday, July 26. 'I try to go out there and put my team in the best position to win games. That's all I can do.'

Footballguys view: The Dolphins have never really been enamored with Drake and they are taking a look at Kalen Ballage to see if he could start in a RBBC. Drake has a current ADP of RB24 (5.01) in 12-team PPR leagues, but that should fall with more news about Ballage hitting the fantasy community.

Dolphins | T.J. McDonald activated    Fri Jul 26, 07:26 PM

Miami Dolphins FS T.J. McDonald (undisclosed) was activated from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 26.

Footballguys view: That was quick. If the Dolphins defense has a strength, it is the safety position, assuming they keep Reshad Jones. 2018 first-round pick Minkah Fitzpatrick is one of the leaders of the defense along with shutdown corner Xavien Howard.

Dolphins | Kalen Ballage with ones again    Fri Jul 26, 11:30 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Kalen Ballage was working with the first-team offense again Friday, July 26.

Footballguys view: A trend is coming into focus, and it spells out RBBC. Ballage might have the lesser part of it as the back who plays more when the game is close, and he is far less proven than Kenyan Drake with a higher bust risk, but his ADP is sure to rise and Drake's to fall as this news makes the rounds.

Free-agent WR Allen Hurns (Cowboys) signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins Friday, July 26. The deal is worth up to $3 million.
