Bills | Sammy Watkins to be full go    Wed Apr 15, 11:32 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is able to work out in some capacity during the team's offseason program, although head coach Rex Ryan indicated Wednesday, April 15, that he doesn't expect Watkins to do many football-related activities training camp. "My understanding is Sammy is doing really well," Ryan said. "We're not going to see him out there until training camp. But he should be full go when we get to training camp."

Footballguys view: The Bills have no reason to rush Watkins back onto the practice field at this time. We believe they'll ease him in at training camp, and he should be able to ramp up his participation quickly as we get closer to the start of the regular season.

Bills | Matt Cassel has high hopes    Tue Apr 14, 07:25 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel believes the talent in Buffalo exceeds that of the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs squad he was a part of. 'We've got all the pieces to the puzzle here to be a successful football team. Our offense has the best skill players in all the league in my opinion.'

Footballguys view: Let's not get crazy here Cassel. Yes, the Bills have stud options at running back and wide receiver but they still lack a dangerous quarterback. We expect Cassel to win the starting job because of his experience, but he'll have to beat out E.J. Manuel and Tyrod Taylor for the job in training camp.

Bills | Brad Smith visiting Tuesday    Tue Apr 14, 12:47 PM

Free-agent WR Brad Smith (Eagles) is visiting with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Smith has played with the Bills before in his pro career, and he has experience working under new Bills head coach Rex Ryan. If added, Smith would only contribute as a reserve receiver and return man on special teams.

Bills | All four Buffalo QBs to get first-team reps    Mon Apr 13, 04:06 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor will all receive first-team repetitions in workouts, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Footballguys view: The Bills are going to have an open competition at quarterback. At the end of the day, we think Matt Cassel ends up with the starting job. Tyrod Taylor might be better competition for the starting job over E.J. Manuel.

Bills | Robert Woods set for fewer targets?    Fri Apr 10, 02:32 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods could see a notable drop in targets in 2015 after the additions of RB LeSean McCoy, WR Percy Harvin and TE Charles Clay. Woods was targeted 104 times in 2014 and had 699 yards. However, Woods thinks he'll still have plenty of opportunities to make an impact in the passing game. He'll be playing for new offensive coordinator Greg Roman, and Woods already believes Roman's scheme will create more chances for the offense to make big plays.

Footballguys view: Woods is an odd man out with two additional targets in the short and intermediate passing game added this offseason plus a run-first mentality. It might take him landing on a second team after his rookie contract is up in 2016 for Woods to realize his fantasy potential.

Bills | Dawan Landry visiting    Tue Apr 7, 01:14 PM

Free-agent SS Dawan Landry (Jets) is visiting with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Head coach Rex Ryan likes Landry dating back to their days together with the Baltimore Ravens. He's an in-the-box safety who can stuff the run, but he struggles in coverage.

Bills | Leodis McKelvin expected to be ready    Mon Apr 6, 10:03 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills CB Leodis McKelvin (ankle) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, head coach Rex Ryan indicated Monday, April 6.

Footballguys view: McKelvin is one of the most important defenders on the Bills' suffocating defense. They don't need to rush him back, and instead will ease him back when training camp rolls around.

Bills | Several players recovering from surgery    Mon Apr 6, 06:35 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Anthony Dixon (undisclosed), WR Chris Hogan (undisclosed), TE Chris Gragg (undisclosed), OG Chris Williams (undisclosed), CB Stephon Gilmore (undisclosed), CB Leodis McKelvin (undisclosed) and FS Aaron Williams (undisclosed) underwent surgery this offseason and have not been cleared for full practice participation. All of the players are expected to be ready for training camp.

Bills | Fred Jackson undergoes surgery    Mon Apr 6, 06:28 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (undisclosed) underwent surgery this offseason and has not been cleared for full practice participation.

Bills | Sammy Watkins limited during workouts    Mon Apr 6, 06:10 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) was limited at the team's voluntary offseason workout Monday, April 6, after undergoing surgery on his hip earlier this offseason. He rode an exercise bike and did some warmup drills Monday.

Footballguys view: Expect more of the same from Watkins until training camp. The hip surgery he underwent was considered minor, but it's a wise move for the Bills to keep him limited during the offseason.

Bills | Percy Harvin excited for new season    Mon Apr 6, 04:20 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin said his best football hasn't been played yet. 'The world has yet to see me really explode like I'm about to [in Buffalo],' Harvin said. Harvin added that he was excited to come to the Bills because of head coach Rex Ryan and Harvin's counterparts. '...coming here was so important to me. When I look at the running game and I looked at Sammy Watkins on the other side, me on the other side with Robert Woods, it spelled nothing but success for me.'

Footballguys view: Harvin will be an interesting fit in the Bills' run-heavy offense. We'll see if he can keep from turning into a malcontent as the second target in an offense that isn't going to light it up through the air.

Bills | No leader for BUF quarterback job    Mon Apr 6, 01:06 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel will receive a fair shot to win the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Rex Ryan. 'I'm lining them up to literally have a competition for the position,' Ryan said. 'People will say, 'Well, is this guy ahead of the other?' There's going to be assumptions, but the great thing is, let it play out. Give both guys the opportunity and then at the end of the day, the cream will rise to the top. It usually does.'

Footballguys view: We'd give the edge to Cassel at this point because of his experience as a starter. Manuel still has a strong arm and athleticism, but his game needs to be more consistent. Ryan did not rule out the possibility of Tyrod Taylor winning the job.

Bills | Sammy Watkins injury update    Fri Apr 3, 04:10 PM

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) underwent surgery to repair a slight tear of the labrum in his hip, according to a source. Watkins had the surgery around the time of the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: Watkins should be good to go for the start of training camp. In the meantime, we're unlikely to see much from him during the offseason.

Bills | Sammy Watkins will be ready for camp    Fri Apr 3, 03:07 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) will be able to some things during offseason workouts but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: This is what we expected after learning about Watkins' surgery. The team will ease him in once training camp begins later this year.

Bills | No timetable for Sammy Watkins    Fri Apr 3, 01:41 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is expected to be ready for the regular season, but there remains no timetable for his return to action after having offseason hip surgery. It's unknown if Watkins will be ready for the team's offseason program, with voluntary workouts starting April 28.

Footballguys view: There's no need to rush him back. Just let Watkins rest until we get to training camp. We think that would be for the best.

Bills | Sammy Watkins had hip procedure    Fri Apr 3, 11:16 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) had surgery to clean out his hip area early in the offseason.

Bills | Marquise Goodwin on the bubble?    Wed Apr 1, 09:55 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin's roster spot could be in jeopardy this summer, according to beat writer Joe Buscaglia.

Footballguys view: The Olympic speedster can fly down the field, but he's struggled to impress as a receiver. The Bills have added wide receiver talent ahead of him on the depth chart, and he may not be able to make the final roster in 2015. Goodwin needs a fresh start.

Bills | LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson to split third downs?    Tue Mar 31, 06:05 PM

Buffalo Bills RBs LeSean McCoy and Fred Jackson could split third-down snaps. Head coach Rex Ryan said Jackson wouldn't be in on all of the third-down plays and that Anthony Dixon would also get some playing time.

Footballguys view: We could see that happening in 2015. McCoy is going to have an incredibly large workload as the centerpiece of the Bills offense. It's wise for the team to use Jackson on third downs, and as a player who can give McCoy a breather from time to time.

Bills | Would like Brandon Spikes back    Sat Mar 28, 02:12 AM

Free-agent LB Brandon Spikes (Bills) would have a home with the Buffalo Bills once again, as general manager Doug Whaley expressed interest in bringing Spikes back.

Footballguys view: The Bills made this clear at the scouting combine earlier this year. Nigel Bradham and Preston Brown can be penciled in as starters in Rex Ryan's 3-4, and behind them are unproven the Ty Powell, Randell Johnson, and Jimmy Gaines. Spikes would be an upgrade over those three, and he could be brought back if the price is right.

Bills | Open to drafting QB    Sat Mar 28, 02:08 AM

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley told media he is open to drafting a quarterback next month, but salaries owed to QB EJ Manuel and QB Tyrod Taylor could complicate that.

Footballguys view: They could use a quarterback, but they might have to wait until the second or third round to get one. Guys like Bryce Petty (Baylor), Garrett Grayson (Colorado State) or Brett Hundley (UCLA) could be options for the team.

Bills | LeSean McCoy trade was quick    Tue Mar 24, 01:31 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy was acquired from the Philadelphia Eagles March 4, and Bills head coach Rex Ryan said the trade took 30 minutes to wrap up. 'The trade for LeSean happened really quick,' Ryan said at the NFL owners meetings. 'We were all sitting there. We were having organizational meetings. ... And all of the sudden we get this call from Philadelphia and I think that was when the trade started. Probably 30 minutes later, the trade was done.'

Footballguys view: The Bills don't mess around. They wanted McCoy to be the centerpiece of their offense, and now he will be. McCoy should have a hefty workload and is a RB1 for fantasy owners.

Bills | LeSean McCoy Buffalo's bellcow    Tue Mar 24, 10:31 AM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy was referred to as the team's 'bellcow' by head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said that McCoy and RB Fred Jackson could see time on third downs.

Footballguys view: He's the centerpiece of the offense, and fantasy will love the size of his workload--provided he can stay healthy. McCoy is a RB1, but consider him a low-end RB1 due to the Bills' poor offensive line.

Bills | Heavy workload for LeSean McCoy?    Sat Mar 21, 08:48 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy should receive plenty of carries if head coach Rex Ryan has his way. 'We prefer to ground and pound it, we're going to run it 50 times if we can on you,' Ryan said Friday, March 20.

Footballguys view: McCoy is going to get everything he can handle in 2015 and beyond. The Bills made the move to acquire the superstar running back so he could be the centerpiece of the offense.

Bills | Rex Ryan committed to the run    Sat Mar 21, 06:57 PM

Buffalo Bills RBs LeSean McCoy and Fred Jackson are expected to receive a lot of carries in head coach Rex Ryan's offense. Ryan went as far as to say: 'we're going to run it 50 times if we can on you.'

Footballguys view: That's why they have LeSean McCoy and Fred Jackson. The mindset makes a ton of sense, especially when you consider they have Matt Cassel as their starting quarterback.

Bills | Rex Ryan expects competition at QB    Sat Mar 21, 01:46 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor will compete for the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: The Bills made a big push to add competition around Manuel this year. Cassel is the veteran with the most experience, but his rigid pocket-passing skill set is not dangerous. Taylor is incredibly fast and has a rocket arm, but he lacks the touch and accuracy to be a good starter. We'll be interested to see how this whole thing works out during camp.

Bills | Buffalo willing to run a lot    Sat Mar 21, 01:45 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said the team would prefer to be a running team next season. 'We prefer to ground and pound it, we're going to run it 50 times if we can on you,' Ryan said. Ryan said he knows the offense has to be balance, which is why the team signed TE Charles Clay and WR Percy Harvin this offseason.

Footballguys view: LeSean McCoy is going to be the centerpiece of the offense with Fred Jackson serving as a valuable backup. Matt Cassel is likely to be their starter, and that means the Bills' passing game won't be too strong. We'll see how they'll shape their offense in camp.

Bills | EJ Manuel to have competition    Sat Mar 21, 12:44 AM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is not locked in as the starting quarterback. Head coach Rex Ryan said Friday, March 20, that the quarterback competition will be open. 'It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there,' Ryan said. 'We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens. You bring in a veteran like (QB Matt Cassel). He's done some pretty good things in this league. He's got that veteran presence about him. With EJ back there just going into his third year I really believe EJ is going to improve with his fundamentals having (QB coach David Lee) here.'

Footballguys view: Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor are the competition, so that loosely defines the meaning. It's an odd combination of quarterbacks because Cassel is the veteran pocket passer with experience while Taylor is supremely athletic and has a rocket arm (with little control). We'll see who can come out on top in training camp.

Bills | Matt Cassel will have shot to start    Sat Mar 21, 12:43 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel will have a chance to win the starting quarterback job in training camp and the preseason. He's got that veteran presence about him.'

Footballguys view: We feel confident that Cassel can win the starting job. Now, that's not to say he's going to have much--if any--fantasy relevance. The Bills are going to be a run-heavy offense in 2015 featuring LeSean McCoy.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor will have chance to start    Sat Mar 21, 12:42 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will be given a chance to start, fighting in a three-way battle with QBs Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel Head coach Rex Ryan said Friday, March 20, that the quarterback competition will be open. 'It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there,' Ryan said. 'We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens.'

Footballguys view: Taylor is an interesting prospect, but we've never considered him starter's material. Instead, he's more of a super-athletic backup. We'll see if Taylor can win the job over Cassel or Manuel.

Bills | Buffalo expected to land Charles Clay    Wed Mar 18, 02:49 PM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to land with the Buffalo Bills after signing a five-year, $38 million offer sheet with Buffalo Tuesday, March 17, according to a source. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer sheet, but they aren't expected to. Clay is set to make $24.5 million in the first two years of the deal. The total deal is 'only for $38 million for five years. Miami's last offer to Clay was for four years and $27 million, including less than $14 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: The Bills have made a big run at Clay, and they're likely to land him. He's a talented move tight end with the versatility to line up all over the field. Buffalo's offense will be centered around RB LeSean McCoy, but it's good to have quality weapons like Clay around QB Matt Cassel.

Bills | Buffalo officially signs Percy Harvin    Wed Mar 18, 02:05 PM

Free-agent WR Percy Harvin (Jets) officially signed with the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, March 18. Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but earlier reports stated it is a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: Finally! This deal has been talked about for quite some time, and now it's official. Harvin likely gets a "prove it" deal from the Bills here. He doesn't want to be labeled as a "gadget player" but he needs to prove he can stay healthy and focused as a wide receiver. We'll see how he fits in on what should be a run-heavy offense featuring RB LeSean McCoy.

Bills | Charles Clay signs offer sheet from Bills    Tue Mar 17, 07:27 PM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay signed an offer sheet from the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, March 17. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer.

Footballguys view: We think the Dolphins will let him go. If they decline to match the Bills' offer sheet, they will receive no compensation for losing Clay as he was tagged as a transitional player.

Bills | Buffalo has good shot at Charles Clay    Mon Mar 16, 06:06 PM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay visited with the Buffalo Bills late last week, and the Bills have a '90%' chance of landing him, according to a source close to the situation. The Bills plan to follow through with their plan to sign him to an offer sheet. Head coach Rex Ryan has been the driving force in the pursuit of Clay. Buffalo continues to study their salary cap numbers and those of the Dolphins.

Footballguys view: The Bills have been hot and heavy after Clay even though the Dolphins placed a transition tag on him at the start of free agency. That has not dismayed them, and they are the favorite to land the talented (and versatile) move tight end.

Bills | Percy Harvin wants more normal role    Mon Mar 16, 04:48 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin is making it a priority to shed the reputation of being a 'gadget' player and focus more on being a traditional wide receiver.

Footballguys view: Harvin has stated displeasure with his "gadget" label, but he may not like what Buffalo has in store for him. He'll be the second WR behind Sammy Watkins on a run-heavy team that features RB LeSean McCoy.

Bills | Bills expected to land Charles Clay?    Sat Mar 14, 09:45 PM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is not expected to return to the team, and the Dolphins expect him to sign with the Buffalo Bills, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Footballguys view: The Bills have made it very clear they want Clay on the team. If signed away, the Dolphins get no compensation as Clay was a transition-tagged player. Clay is a versatile player who can attack the seam. In Buffalo's run-heavy system, Clay would be a valuable asset for the passing game.

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay will not receive an offer from the Buffalo Bills Friday, March 13, but the Bills will make an offer in the near future, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bills are hot and heavy after Clay--and for good reason. He's a versatile player who can attack defenses down the seam and after the catch as a receiver. With the Dolphins signing Jordan Cameron on Thursday, we could see them let Clay go--without compensation.

Bills | Percy Harvin agrees to terms with BUF    Fri Mar 13, 03:35 PM

Free-agent WR Percy Harvin (Jets) has agreed to terms with the Buffalo Bills on a one-year deal, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: A curious move here. Harvin is a talented player but his attitude may not sit well on a team that is going to be run-heavy under new head coach Rex Ryan. Catching passes from Matt Cassel isn't exactly going to spark a career-best season for Harvin--especially since he's the second target behind Sammy Watkins.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor signs     Thu Mar 12, 06:40 PM

Free-agent QB Tyrod Taylor (Ravens) signed a two-year deal with the Buffalo Bills Thursday, March 12. The deal is worth $7 million if Taylor starts, according to a source, and has $1.2 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: The Bills still look for an answer to quarterback, but really Taylor is just cheap insurance as it is unlikely he starts with Matt Cassel and EJ Manuel there. Then again, it wasn't that long ago when Buffalo was rotating quarterbacks in a weekly basis, so perhaps he might see that money. We wouldn't want him to as we would expect Taylor to kill Sammy Watkins and Robert Woods fantasy value.

Free-agent WR Percy Harvin (Jets) ideally would like to be in a high-octane offense on a one-year, prove-it deal, but the Buffalo Bills are throwing money around and are trying to sign Harvin to a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: Harvin might want to continue to play under Rex Ryan, who is famous for being a "player's coach". With Matt Cassel at quarterback, adding Harvin to the run after catch threat that Sammy Watkins presents could give the passing game some more punch.
