Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said that the passing game took positive steps Tuesday, July 22, but some offensive players said that the execution of the passing game needs to improve.

Footballguys view: The team has gone "all in" with quarterback E.J. Manuel. We'll see if he and Sammy Watkins can give the team a dangerous passing game in 2014.

Bills | Run game shines in practice    Tue Jul 22, 08:50 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson and RB Anthony Dixon both reached the second level on runs during team drills Tuesday, July 22, and the team's top four backs all had runs that would have gone for first down yardage.

Footballguys view: The Bills are stacked at the running back position. Dixon is the forgotten fourth-string back behind Jackson, C.J. Spiller and Bryce Brown. We'll see if they have to lean on Spiller and Jackson, or if they can jump start the passing game led by E.J. Manuel this year.

Bills | Backup QBs alternating    Tue Jul 22, 10:32 AM

Buffalo Bills QBs Jeff Tuel and Thaddeus Lewis are alternating series with the second unit in team drills Tuesday, July 22.

Footballguys view: Tuel has a weak arm, but he's accurate on shorter routes. Lewis is the player to watch here. He is athletic, can zip the ball downfield and looked good in limited playing time last year. Starting QB E.J. Manuel needs to avoid the injuries that plagued him last year. If Manuel is hurt, Lewis could take over and have some nice weapons around him to throw to.

Bills | Sammy Watkins running with ones    Tue Jul 22, 09:35 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins is running exclusively with the first-team offense in practice.

Footballguys view: Absolutely zero surprise here. The Bills made an aggressive move up in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft to secure the services of Watkins. He's fast, quick and agile after the catch. Watkins didn't run the entire route tree in college, but has the ability to be one of the best receivers in the game when he fully develops that skill set. His current ADP is WR36 (8.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bills | Marcell Dareus due back today    Tue Jul 22, 09:26 AM

Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus is expected to return to the team Tuesday, July 22, after his flight was delayed the previous day.

Footballguys view: Dareus needs to get things on the right track off the field. He failed his conditioning test at the start of camp, and he was arrested twice earlier this offseason. On the field, Dareus is an impact player with tremendous upside. The Bills have him under contract for the next two years. He's unlikely to get a long-term offer from the team in the future if he continues to be a distraction off the field.

Bills | Ron Brooks struggles in camp    Mon Jul 21, 11:32 PM

Buffalo Bills CB Ron Brooks struggled in camp Monday, July 21. He was beaten deep twice in one-on-one drills, and he missed an assignment in team drills. Joe Buscaglia of WGR 550 Sports Radio believes Brooks is in danger of not making the roster.

Footballguys view: Brooks has good straight-line speed, but obviously he's struggling to stay with receivers downfield. We'll see if he can turn it around as training camp rolls on.

Bills | T.J. Graham on the roster bubble    Mon Jul 21, 09:20 PM

Buffalo Bills WR T.J. Graham had a pass fall through his hands after beating his defender on a deep route in camp Monday, July 21.ESPN.com's Mike Rodak believes Graham is in danger of not making the team unless he can show he is a complete receiver and not just a deep threat.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Bills added Sammy Watkins in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft, and they traded for veteran Mike Williams earlier this year. Even though they traded away Stevie Johnson (49ers), the depth chart at wide receiver is packed with talent. Graham can get open on a "9" route, but he needs to show that he can run the full route tree and consistently catch passes.

Bills | Bryce Brown looking good     Mon Jul 21, 08:59 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Bryce Brown has routinely reached the second level when running the ball in camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak.

Footballguys view: An interesting note for fantasy owners here. Brown is going to play as a reserve runner behind C.J. Spiller and Fred Jackson this year. However, Brown may be the lead back for the Bills in 2015. Both Spiller and Jackson are in the final year of their contracts.

Bills | Sammy Watkins impresses in camp    Mon Jul 21, 08:52 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins made several big plays in practice Monday, July 21, according to ESPN.com's Mike Rodak. Watkins beat CB Leodis McKelvin deep, hauled in a pass over three defenders and caught a pass in traffic on a crossing pattern.

Footballguys view: Watkins was the best receiver in the talent rich draft class of 2014. He can fly down the field, tracking passes over his shoulder with ease. Watkins is also dangerous on short routes where he uses his run-after-the-catch ability to rack up big yards.

Bills | No timetable for Cordy Glenn    Mon Jul 21, 06:46 PM

Buffalo Bills OT Cordy Glenn (illness) does not have a timetable for his return at this point, according to head coach Doug Marrone. 'I don't know that. It's a medical condition. I'm preparing to go on as if he's not playing, which he's not,' Marrone said. 'I'm just waiting for the doctors, and I can't speak about the condition because it's something that happened outside of football.'

Bills | Sammy Watkins update    Mon Jul 21, 05:35 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins was poked in the eye during practice Monday, July 21. Watkins returned after temporarily leaving the field.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Bills here. Watkins is going to be a big part of the offense this year. He'll have fantasy value as a WR3 or WR4 this season. His current ADP is WR33 (7.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bills | Marcell Dareus excused, will return    Mon Jul 21, 04:52 PM

Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus left practice Monday, July 21, for personal reasons, according to head coach Doug Marrone. He is expected back for the evening practice.

Footballguys view: Dareus is under contract for the next two years, but his act has been wearing a bit thin. Arrested twice this offseason, Dareus failed to pass the team's conditioning test at the start of training camp. He's incredibly talented, but Dareus has to stay on track if he's going to play up to his potential in Buffalo.

Bills | Sammy Watkins fine after practice scare    Mon Jul 21, 04:12 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins returned to practice Monday, July 21, after leaving with an apparent forehead injury.

Footballguys view: The Bills Mafia can exhale here. The team moved up in the first-round to select Watkins this year, and he's going to be a big part of the offense. He's not big like Calvin Johnson (Lions), but Watkins can fly down the field and he's dangerous after the catch.

Bills | Brandon Spikes leaves practice    Mon Jul 21, 03:50 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Brandon Spikes was not wearing pads while being looked at by trainers during practice Monday, July 21. He was reportedly being cooled with towels and eventually left the field.

Footballguys view: The Bills defense doesn't need any more injuries. They already lost Kiko Alonso for the season. We'll know more about this Spikes injury soon.

Bills | Marquise Goodwin practices    Mon Jul 21, 02:44 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin (asthma) returned to practice Monday, July 21. He left practice Sunday, July 20 because of asthma.

Footballguys view: Goodwin's injury situation was never serious. His Olympic speed will come in handy when the team wants to attack deep. Goodwin has been pushed down the depth chart to WR4 for the Bills with the additions of Mike Williams and first-round pick Sammy Watkins.

Bills | Two signed, two cut    Mon Jul 21, 12:34 PM

The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent WR Naaman Roosevelt (Lions) and DT Landon Cohen (Bears) to undisclosed deals. The team released WR Ramses Barden and LB Nathan Williams.

Footballguys view: Barden's days in the NFL are likely over. He was an intriguing third-round pick by the Giants in 2009, but his size and wingspan never helped him at the pro level. Barden lacks the explosiveness and "my ball" mentality to stick around in the NFL.

Bills | Marcell Dareus testing team's patience    Mon Jul 21, 10:39 AM

Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus has drawn the ire of Bills general manager Doug Whaley after reporting to camp out of shape. 'It's cause for concern,' Whaley said. 'You always are disappointed when one of your guys isn't ready. But we think he's not far off. So hopefully sooner than later.'

Footballguys view: The Bills went ahead and picked up his fifth-year option, and now they have him under contract for the next two seasons. Dareus is not going to get a long-term extension if he continues to behave like this.

Bills | Marquise Goodwin update    Sun Jul 20, 11:03 PM

Updating a previous story, Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin (asthma) said he left practice early Sunday, July 20, because of trouble with his asthma and not because of an injury.

Footballguys view: Goodwin has Olympic speed and will help stretch the field for the Bills. With the additions of Mike Williams and Sammy Watkins, Goodwin has moved down the depth chart to the fourth spot.
