Bills | Matt Simms claimed    Fri May 29, 05:34 PM

New York Jets QB Matt Simms was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills Friday, May 29. The Bills also waived QB Jeff Tuel.

Footballguys view: We don't see Simms as anything more than a camp arm for the Bills. As a former Jets player, Simms has ties to Rex Ryan and he knows what the coach wants from a quarterback.

Bills | LeSean McCoy limited Wednesday    Wed May 27, 09:48 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (neck) was limited during organized team activities Wednesday, May 27, because of a neck injury. Head coach Rex Ryan said McCoy's injury is not serious.

Footballguys view: McCoy is going to get plenty of work during the regular season. He's the centerpiece of the Bills offense, so it's wise for them to take it easy on him if he's a little banged up during OTAs.

Bills | Buffalo QBs receiving equal reps at OTAs    Wed May 27, 02:37 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel were given equal repetitions during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Manuel and Cassel worked with the starters while Taylor and Tuel worked with the backups. Head coach Rex Ryan said he wants to give everyone a fair chance.

Footballguys view: Cassel has the most experience, but he's not an exciting option as a starter. Manuel is big, somewhat athletic and has a strong arm but his decision making needs a lot of work. Taylor could be a sleeper here. He's ultra athletic and has a rocket arm. He needs to show better accuracy as a passer if he wants to win the starting job in Buffalo.

Bills | Rex Ryan favoring Tyrod Taylor?    Sun May 24, 08:50 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor was recruited by head coach Rex Ryan in free agency. Ryan believes in the talent evaluation personnel of Taylor's former team, the Baltimore Ravens, and he has always wanted a dual-threat quarterback to lead his run-heavy offense.

Footballguys view: Taylor is one of the quickest and fastest players in the NFL. He can get to top speed in a hurry, and Taylor has make-you-miss ability as a runner in the open field. Taylor possesses a rocket arm, but his accuracy leaves a lot to be desired. He was a 57 percent passer in four years of college at Virginia Tech, and Taylor has only thrown 35 passes in four years as a pro (with a completion percentage of 54.3). He's the most interesting of the Buffalo QBs, and rushing quarterbacks are always players fantasy owners should be monitoring.

Bills | EJ Manuel part of open competition     Sat May 23, 11:44 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and Jeff Tuel will all have a chance to win the starting job, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: Let's go ahead and leave Tuel out of this conversation. Manuel is big, athletic and has a strong arm but he failed to make quick decisions as a passer. Cassel has the most experience, but he's not an exciting option as a starter--even for a team that is going to be run-heavy on offense. Taylor is supremely gifted athletically and he has a rocket arm, but he's unproven and needs to be more accurate as a passer. The Bills are going to run the ball as much as possible, and any starting quarterback for them isn't going to be much of a fantasy factor.

Bills | OC says EJ Manuel won't be cut    Wed May 20, 02:36 AM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel has a firm believer in offensive coordinator Greg Roman, who has said Manuel will not be cut in camp if he doesn't show progress.

Footballguys view: The talk about Manuel getting cut was a bit surprising, but anything can happen in the NFL. Teams can move on from young quarterbacks if things aren't moving in the right direction. Manuel has raw natural talent and athleticism, but he needs to improve (and quicken) his decision making and accuracy as a passer.

Bills | Ronald Darby signs    Tue May 19, 05:26 PM

Buffalo Bills rookie CB Ronald Darby signed a four-year deal worth $4.6 million Tuesday, May 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bills didn't have a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, but they promptly scooped up Darby in the second round. He's a speedy cover corner with the hip transition to play off the line of scrimmage. Darby has good click-and-close ability when the play unfolds in front of him. The rookie has starter's upside, but this season he'll compete to be the nickel corner behind Leodis McKelvin and Stephon Gilmore.

Bills | Sanjay Lal talks Buffalo WRs    Tue May 19, 09:10 AM

Buffalo Bills wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal discussed the team's wide receivers in great detail Monday, May 18, saying he likes the flexibility among the corps and their ability to execute on the field. Lal believes Bills WR Sammy Watkins can become a complete receiver, and he praised WR Robert Woods' ability as a route runner. Lal doesn't want to pigeonhole WR Percy Harvin as being a gadget-play receiver.

Footballguys view: The Bills have almost everything for a playoff run...and they certainly have a fine group of wide receivers. The talent is there, but fantasy owners need to recognize that this is going to be a run-heavy offense featuring superstar running back LeSean McCoy. Buffalo is set up with quality talent on both sides of the ball, but they still lack a good quarterback. We'll see if Matt Cassel, E.J. Manuel or Tyrod Taylor can take advantage and be decent with the star talent around them.

Bills | EJ Manuel fighting for roster spot?    Mon May 18, 10:06 AM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel needs to show serious progress in organized team activities and training camp or he could be released before the season, in the opinion of beat writer Joe Buscaglia.

Footballguys view: Manuel was the team's first-round pick in 2013 with the idea that he could be the quarterback of the future. That has all changed now after two seasons of injury, inconsistency and disappointment. Manuel is big, athletic and has a strong arm but he fails to make decisions quickly (or throw accurately) as a passer. He's competing with Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor for the starting job in Buffalo.

Bills | Matt Cassel to be backup?    Fri May 15, 07:32 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel is likely to enter Week 1 of the season as the team's backup quarterback, in the opinion of The Buffalo News' Vic Carucci. He also thinks head coach Rex Ryan and offensive coordinator Greg Roman are open-minded about QB EJ Manuel and will give him a fair shot to compete for a starting job this summer. If Cassel or QB Tyrod Taylor win the starting job, the Bills would be expected to trade Manuel before outright cutting him.

Footballguys view: Manuel certainly has more upside than Cassel, even though he also has a much lower floor. The Bills know what Cassel is, but Manuel could be better if Roman can leverage his running ability and put him in a position to succeed as he did with Colin Kaepernick earlier in his career. Taylor is also a running QB and shouldn't be dismissed if this truly is an open competition, only because of the quality of his competition.

Bills | Karlos Williams signs    Thu May 14, 05:34 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 14. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams has a very physical running style and could fit into the Bills run-heavy scheme very well. He's a one-cut, downhill runner with some red flags both from a football and character standpoint. The Bills won't depend on him this season unless LeSean McCoy and/or Fred Jackson go down.

Bills | EJ Manuel likes new offense    Wed May 13, 01:29 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said he likes the new offense that offensive coordinator Greg Roman is bringing to the team. 'I just think the dynamics that we have and the personnel that we have, you look at the receivers, running backs and the tight ends we have at the skill positions and the O-linemen getting better, getting stronger, getting nastier,' Manuel said. 'But with the shifts and motions and the things we'll do to mix it up for a defense is going to be really good. Instead of just being vanilla we'll have a whole lot of different looks for opponents to prepare for.'

Footballguys view: Manuel has looked uncomfortable running a pro offense since the Bills selected him in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Having him more comfortable in the system could lead to Manuel playing better. He's competing for the starting job with Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor. The winner of the competition is not going to be much of a fantasy factor due to the run-heavy nature of the Bills offense.

Bills | John Conner to Buffalo    Wed May 13, 11:53 AM

Free-agent FB John Conner (Jets) signed with the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, May 13. FB Corey Knox was waived to make room for him.

Footballguys view: Conner is reunited with former Jets head coach (and current Bills head coach) Rex Ryan. He's not a lock to make the final roster, but he does give the team another fullback behind starter Jerome Felton.

Bills | Fred Jackson may miss final cut?    Tue May 12, 03:10 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson may not make the final roster if the Bills end up keeping only three running backs, according to Mike Rodak of ESPN.com. RB LeSean McCoy is a lock for the final roster, while RBs Anthony Dixon and Bryce Brown will also compete for a spot.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine this happening, but in the NFL anything is possible. We would rather keep Jackson--and his $2.7 million cap number--over cheaper options like Dixon or Brown.

Bills | Rex Ryan eats with La'El Collins    Mon May 4, 11:05 PM

Louisiana State OT La'El Collins met with Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan in Baton Rouge Monday, May 4, after the standout met with police earlier in the day. He was considered a likely first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft before he was linked to a woman who was recently murdered.

Footballguys view: Collins was not drafted, and now he's free to sign anywhere. There should be several teams interested if Collins is cleared in this case. At this time, he's cooperating with police and not a suspect in this horrendous crime.

Bills | Jerry Hughes impressing his coach    Thu Apr 30, 06:51 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes was pulled from practice Wednesday, April 29, by head coach Rex Ryan, in order for the offense to get some work in. Ryan said Hughes had five or six sacks before being pulled. 'This just in: I am really happy we signed Jerry Hughes back,' Ryan said Wednesday. 'It's rare that you have to pull a guy from practice because he's ruining your practice. I had to pull him today.'

Footballguys view: Hughes is good but remember Bills fans - this is how Rex Ryan operates. He pumps his players way up. The thing you should be concerned with is, how bad is the offensive line if he was getting tons of sacks? Of course, this is all non-contact anyway so again, take it with a grain of salt.

Bills | Unlikely to enter first round    Wed Apr 29, 01:23 PM

The Buffalo Bills likely will not trade up in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: The Bills are already without a first-rounder, and with modest success last year, the price to get back into the first from their first pick in the mid-second would be too high, especially in a class that doesn't have 32 first-round quality talents.

Bills | Three Buffalo QBs receive equal reps    Tue Apr 28, 05:12 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, EJ Manuel and Tyrod Taylor each took an equal amount of snaps Tuesday, April 28, at the team's voluntary minicamp. Head coach Rex Ryan didn't name a favorite, saying all three could be [starting] NFL quarterbacks.

Footballguys view: Round and round we go, where this stops nobody knows. As we get closer to the regular season there will be a frontrunner who emerges. Cassel has the most experience, Manuel was their 2013 first-round pick, and Taylor is the intriguing (and super athletic) sleeper. None will have great fantasy value in Ryan's run-heavy offense.

Bills | Jonte Green released    Mon Apr 27, 04:22 PM

Buffalo Bills CB Jonte Green was released Monday, April 27.

Footballguys view: Green was a sixth-round pick by the Lions in 2012. Earlier this year, the Bills signed Green to a reserve/futures contract. Getting released at this point in the season is not a good sign for Green's stock.

Bills | Sammy Watkins to be full go    Wed Apr 15, 11:32 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) is able to work out in some capacity during the team's offseason program, although head coach Rex Ryan indicated Wednesday, April 15, that he doesn't expect Watkins to do many football-related activities training camp. "My understanding is Sammy is doing really well," Ryan said. "We're not going to see him out there until training camp. But he should be full go when we get to training camp."

Footballguys view: The Bills have no reason to rush Watkins back onto the practice field at this time. We believe they'll ease him in at training camp, and he should be able to ramp up his participation quickly as we get closer to the start of the regular season.

Bills | Matt Cassel has high hopes    Tue Apr 14, 07:25 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel believes the talent in Buffalo exceeds that of the 2010 Kansas City Chiefs squad he was a part of. 'We've got all the pieces to the puzzle here to be a successful football team. Our offense has the best skill players in all the league in my opinion.'

Footballguys view: Let's not get crazy here Cassel. Yes, the Bills have stud options at running back and wide receiver but they still lack a dangerous quarterback. We expect Cassel to win the starting job because of his experience, but he'll have to beat out E.J. Manuel and Tyrod Taylor for the job in training camp.

Bills | Brad Smith visiting Tuesday    Tue Apr 14, 12:47 PM

Free-agent WR Brad Smith (Eagles) is visiting with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, April 14.

Bills | All four Buffalo QBs to get first-team reps    Mon Apr 13, 04:06 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel, Jeff Tuel and Tyrod Taylor will all receive first-team repetitions in workouts, according to offensive coordinator Greg Roman.

Footballguys view: The Bills are going to have an open competition at quarterback. At the end of the day, we think Matt Cassel ends up with the starting job. Tyrod Taylor might be better competition for the starting job over E.J. Manuel.

Bills | Robert Woods set for fewer targets?    Fri Apr 10, 02:32 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods could see a notable drop in targets in 2015 after the additions of RB LeSean McCoy, WR Percy Harvin and TE Charles Clay. Woods was targeted 104 times in 2014 and had 699 yards. However, Woods thinks he'll still have plenty of opportunities to make an impact in the passing game. He'll be playing for new offensive coordinator Greg Roman, and Woods already believes Roman's scheme will create more chances for the offense to make big plays.

Footballguys view: Woods is an odd man out with two additional targets in the short and intermediate passing game added this offseason plus a run-first mentality. It might take him landing on a second team after his rookie contract is up in 2016 for Woods to realize his fantasy potential.

Bills | Dawan Landry visiting    Tue Apr 7, 01:14 PM

Free-agent SS Dawan Landry (Jets) is visiting with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, April 7.

Bills | Leodis McKelvin expected to be ready    Mon Apr 6, 10:03 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills CB Leodis McKelvin (ankle) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, head coach Rex Ryan indicated Monday, April 6.

Footballguys view: McKelvin is one of the most important defenders on the Bills' suffocating defense. They don't need to rush him back, and instead will ease him back when training camp rolls around.

Bills | Sammy Watkins limited during workouts    Mon Apr 6, 06:10 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (hip) was limited at the team's voluntary offseason workout Monday, April 6, after undergoing surgery on his hip earlier this offseason. He rode an exercise bike and did some warmup drills Monday.

Footballguys view: Expect more of the same from Watkins until training camp. The hip surgery he underwent was considered minor, but it's a wise move for the Bills to keep him limited during the offseason.

Bills | Percy Harvin excited for new season    Mon Apr 6, 04:20 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin said his best football hasn't been played yet. 'The world has yet to see me really explode like I'm about to [in Buffalo],' Harvin said. Harvin added that he was excited to come to the Bills because of head coach Rex Ryan and Harvin's counterparts. '...coming here was so important to me. When I look at the running game and I looked at Sammy Watkins on the other side, me on the other side with Robert Woods, it spelled nothing but success for me.'

Footballguys view: Harvin will be an interesting fit in the Bills' run-heavy offense. We'll see if he can keep from turning into a malcontent as the second target in an offense that isn't going to light it up through the air.

Bills | No leader for BUF quarterback job    Mon Apr 6, 01:06 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel will receive a fair shot to win the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Rex Ryan. 'I'm lining them up to literally have a competition for the position,' Ryan said. 'People will say, 'Well, is this guy ahead of the other?' There's going to be assumptions, but the great thing is, let it play out. Give both guys the opportunity and then at the end of the day, the cream will rise to the top. It usually does.'

Footballguys view: We'd give the edge to Cassel at this point because of his experience as a starter. Manuel still has a strong arm and athleticism, but his game needs to be more consistent. Ryan did not rule out the possibility of Tyrod Taylor winning the job.

Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin's roster spot could be in jeopardy this summer, according to beat writer Joe Buscaglia.

Footballguys view: The Olympic speedster can fly down the field, but he's struggled to impress as a receiver. The Bills have added wide receiver talent ahead of him on the depth chart, and he may not be able to make the final roster in 2015. Goodwin needs a fresh start.

Bills | LeSean McCoy, Fred Jackson to split third downs?    Tue Mar 31, 06:05 PM

Buffalo Bills RBs LeSean McCoy and Fred Jackson could split third-down snaps. Head coach Rex Ryan said Jackson wouldn't be in on all of the third-down plays and that Anthony Dixon would also get some playing time.

Footballguys view: We could see that happening in 2015. McCoy is going to have an incredibly large workload as the centerpiece of the Bills offense. It's wise for the team to use Jackson on third downs, and as a player who can give McCoy a breather from time to time.

Bills | Would like Brandon Spikes back    Sat Mar 28, 02:12 AM

Free-agent LB Brandon Spikes (Bills) would have a home with the Buffalo Bills once again, as general manager Doug Whaley expressed interest in bringing Spikes back.

Footballguys view: The Bills made this clear at the scouting combine earlier this year. Nigel Bradham and Preston Brown can be penciled in as starters in Rex Ryan's 3-4, and behind them are unproven the Ty Powell, Randell Johnson, and Jimmy Gaines. Spikes would be an upgrade over those three, and he could be brought back if the price is right.

'The trade for LeSean happened really quick,' Ryan said at the NFL owners meetings. 'We were all sitting there. We were having organizational meetings. ... And all of the sudden we get this call from Philadelphia and I think that was when the trade started. Probably 30 minutes later, the trade was done.'

Footballguys view: The Bills don't mess around. They wanted McCoy to be the centerpiece of their offense, and now he will be. McCoy should have a hefty workload and is a RB1 for fantasy owners.

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy was referred to as the team's 'bellcow' by head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said that McCoy and RB Fred Jackson could see time on third downs.

Bills | Rex Ryan expects competition at QB    Sat Mar 21, 01:46 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs EJ Manuel, Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor will compete for the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: The Bills made a big push to add competition around Manuel this year. Cassel is the veteran with the most experience, but his rigid pocket-passing skill set is not dangerous. Taylor is incredibly fast and has a rocket arm, but he lacks the touch and accuracy to be a good starter. We'll be interested to see how this whole thing works out during camp.

Bills | Buffalo willing to run a lot    Sat Mar 21, 01:45 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said the team would prefer to be a running team next season. 'We prefer to ground and pound it, we're going to run it 50 times if we can on you,' Ryan said. Ryan said he knows the offense has to be balance, which is why the team signed TE Charles Clay and WR Percy Harvin this offseason.

Footballguys view: LeSean McCoy is going to be the centerpiece of the offense with Fred Jackson serving as a valuable backup. Matt Cassel is likely to be their starter, and that means the Bills' passing game won't be too strong. We'll see how they'll shape their offense in camp.

Bills | EJ Manuel to have competition    Sat Mar 21, 12:44 AM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel is not locked in as the starting quarterback. Head coach Rex Ryan said Friday, March 20, that the quarterback competition will be open. 'It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there,' Ryan said. 'We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens. You bring in a veteran like (QB Matt Cassel). He's done some pretty good things in this league. He's got that veteran presence about him. With EJ back there just going into his third year I really believe EJ is going to improve with his fundamentals having (QB coach David Lee) here.'

Footballguys view: Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor are the competition, so that loosely defines the meaning. It's an odd combination of quarterbacks because Cassel is the veteran pocket passer with experience while Taylor is supremely athletic and has a rocket arm (with little control). We'll see who can come out on top in training camp.

Bills | Matt Cassel will have shot to start    Sat Mar 21, 12:43 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel will have a chance to win the starting quarterback job in training camp and the preseason. 'We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens. You bring in a veteran like (QB Matt Cassel). He's done some pretty good things in this league. He's got that veteran presence about him.'

Footballguys view: We feel confident that Cassel can win the starting job. Now, that's not to say he's going to have much--if any--fantasy relevance. The Bills are going to be a run-heavy offense in 2015 featuring LeSean McCoy.

'It's a competition and whoever earns the job will be the guy that's out there,' Ryan said. 'We have some talented guys and we'll see what happens.'

Footballguys view: Taylor is an interesting prospect, but we've never considered him starter's material. Instead, he's more of a super-athletic backup. We'll see if Taylor can win the job over Cassel or Manuel.

Bills | Buffalo expected to land Charles Clay    Wed Mar 18, 02:49 PM

Miami Dolphins transition free-agent TE Charles Clay is expected to land with the Buffalo Bills after signing a five-year, $38 million offer sheet with Buffalo Tuesday, March 17, according to a source. The Dolphins have five days to match the offer sheet, but they aren't expected to. Clay is set to make $24.5 million in the first two years of the deal. The total deal is 'only for $38 million for five years. Miami's last offer to Clay was for four years and $27 million, including less than $14 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: The Bills have made a big run at Clay, and they're likely to land him. He's a talented move tight end with the versatility to line up all over the field. Buffalo's offense will be centered around RB LeSean McCoy, but it's good to have quality weapons like Clay around QB Matt Cassel.
