Bills | EJ Manuel still Bills' top QB option    Sat Feb 28, 02:16 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel still seems to be the No. 1 option at quarterback, for now, with Josh McCown heading to the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: That's not a great plan for the Bills. Buffalo could still add a quarterback in free agency or the draft. This is not a strong class either way, and Buffalo doesn't yet have a long-term answer at quarterback.

Bills | Buffalo looking to land Josh McCown    Thu Feb 26, 11:06 AM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is having contract negotiations with the Buffalo Bills, but it is not known if the Bills are the leading candidate to sign McCown, according to a source.

Footballguys view: At this point it would seem anything is an upgrade over EJ Manuel, at least in how he plays right now. McCown isn't a long-term answer, but he would be better for Robert Woods and Sammy Watkins fantasy value in 2015.

Bills | Buffalo looking at Charles Clay    Sun Feb 22, 01:06 PM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay is a player the Buffalo Bills are considering pursuing in free agency.

Footballguys view: Clay would provide an upgrade over what they have right now in Scott Chandler. The Dolphins would be wise to keep the versatile Clay around if they can.

Bills | Coach excited about EJ Manuel    Thu Feb 19, 02:59 AM

Buffalo Bills coach Rex Ryan is excited about QB EJ Manuel, as he told reporters Manuel 'has some potential', but the club is still looking for a long-term signal caller.

Footballguys view: The Bills are looking to land a new quarterback, but Manuel's not a total wash just yet. Manuel works hard and is a football junkie, but he hasn't been that good when starting. Plus, he's struggled to stay healthy. It's wise for the Bills to look for added competition at quarterback.

Bills | QB the No. 1 priority for Buffalo    Wed Feb 18, 06:01 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan said finding a quarterback is easier said than done. Shortly after Ryan was hired, he said there were no guarantees at the quarterback position, simply saying that QB EJ Manuel would get a chance to compete.

Footballguys view: The Bills have the making of a playoff team....if they only had a QB worth a damn. We like Manuel's love of the game and work ethic, but he hasn't been able to produce wins as a starting quarterback. This is not a great QB class in the draft, but the Bills don't have a first-round pick anyway. The free-agent class isn't great either, and we could see the Bills sign someone like Mark Sanchez or Brian Hoyer to compete for the starting job.

Bills | Jerry Hughes unlikely to receive tag    Tue Feb 17, 01:02 PM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent DE Jerry Hughes wants to re-sign with the team, and they want him back, but Buffalo is unlikely to use $14 million-plus on another pass rusher in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Hughes is arguably the best edge-rusher available on the open market. It's unlikely the Bills will have the kind of money needed to keep him around. They're already invested heavily in Mario Williams, and Marcel Dareus had his fifth-year option picked up. Next year, Dareus will be commanding a high price tag.

Bills | Josh McCown leaves without deal    Mon Feb 16, 02:22 PM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) visited the Buffalo Bills Monday, Feb. 16, but did not leave with a deal. McCown still has future visits scheduled, so a deal could still get done.

Footballguys view: Many thought McCown would be signed by the Bills, but that's not the case at this time. A deal could be agreed to in the future, but frankly the Bills need to do a better job of finding QB talent. They have a world-class defense, a good running game and one of the best young WRs in the game today with Sammy Watkins. The one piece they don't have--quarterback--is the most important asset a team can have.

Bills | Josh McCown negotiating in Buffalo    Mon Feb 16, 08:42 AM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) is working on a deal with the Buffalo Bills Monday, Feb. 16.

Footballguys view: It looks like the Bills have zeroed in on McCown as their quarterback. An agreement may come in the near future. Don't be surprised if the Bills add another QB at some point in the draft for added competition. Bills offensive line coach Aaron Kromer has experience working with McCown from their days together in Chicago. Kromer was the offensive coordinator there when McCown had a good year filling in for an injured Jay Cutler in 2013.

Bills | David Harris could be option    Sat Feb 14, 09:16 AM

Bills | Richie Incognito deal imminent    Sat Feb 7, 09:15 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent OG Richie Incognito (Dolphins) will likely agree to a contract with the Buffalo Bills. The deal is imminent, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Incognito is going to take a physical on Saturday, and he could be signed by the Bills soon after that. He got a little bit of interest from guard-needy teams in 2014, but he ended up sitting out the season. Incognito is best known for his role in the "Bullygate" scandal that rocked the Dolphins in 2013. If he stays out of trouble, Incognito is likely to start in Buffalo.

Bills | C.J. Spiller contract voided    Sat Feb 7, 03:26 AM

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller had his 2015 contract year voided on Friday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Assuming no franchise or transition tag, Spiller hits free agency on Tuesday, March 10, when the league year opens. We're curious to see what kind of market Spiller gets in free agency. This is already a strong free agent class at the running back position. We'll also see an incredibly gifted group of running backs enter the league via the 2015 NFL draft. Spiller has talent, but his oft-injured nature could keep his price tag low.

NFL | QB Garrett Grayson a second-round pick?    Wed Feb 4, 08:52 PM

Greg Gabriel, from NationalFootballPost.com, believes Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson could go in the second round of the 2015 NFL draft. Grayson was impressive on film for CSU and earlier this year during the week of practice at the Senior Bowl.

Footballguys view: Grayson is an interesting prospect to watch. He made pro-style decisions under former Rams head coach Jim McElwain. Grayson already knows how to use his eyes to manipulate the defense, and he'll fearlessly attack the secondary. He's super aggressive as a passer, and that sometimes will get him in trouble. We have a third-round grade on Grayson, but in this weak QB class he could go higher. A team like Buffalo (they lack a first-round pick) could have interest.

Bills | Justin Brown claimed off waivers    Tue Feb 3, 12:46 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Justin Brown was claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Footballguys view: Brown was a sixth-round pick by the Steelers in 2013. He failed to make an impact and only caught 12 passes in eight games. Brown is buried on the depth chart in Buffalo, and he will be a longshot to make the final roster.

Bills | Anthony Dixon has knee surgery    Wed Jan 28, 02:18 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Anthony Dixon (knee) underwent surgery for a partially torn meniscus in his knee Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Footballguys view: This is just a minor procedure which should not keep Dixon from participating once training camp rolls around. We're sure the Bills will ease him back in at that time. Our very own Dr. Jene Bramel says this, "Since he played through injury and has reportedly already started rehab, it's probably relatively minor and they chose the procedure with the shorter of the two recovery periods."

Bills | EJ Manuel will have a clean slate    Tue Jan 27, 03:27 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will have a clean slate next season, according to new offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Roman said that Manuel has shown some good things but that his level of consistency needs to be higher.

Footballguys view: The Bills have yet to give up on Maneul, but 2015 will certainly be a make-or-break season for the young quarterback. We're not expecting much from him, and dynasty owners shouldn't feel they have any sort of value on their roster with Manuel. We'll see if the 2013 first-round pick can turn things around this season.

Bills | Sanjay Lal hired    Sat Jan 17, 05:33 PM

Former New York Jets wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal has signed a two-year deal to fill the same role with the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Jan. 17.

Bills | Buffalo would like C.J. Spiller back    Thu Jan 15, 03:31 PM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller is a player the Bills will try to re-sign this offseason, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: Spiller may be attracted to a run-heavy offense like the one Rex Ryan is talking about. He has been very good when healthy and used correctly, but running backs aren't breaking the bank in free agency these days, so Buffalo might be the best option for him.

Bills | Several coaching additions announced    Thu Jan 15, 01:42 PM

The Buffalo Bills have hired Bobby April III (Jets) as their linebackers coach, Karl Dunbar (Jets) as their defensive line coach, Tim McDonald (Jets) as their defensive backs coach, Eric Smith (Jets) as their assistant special teams coach, Tony Sparano Jr. (Jets) as their tight ends coach and Jeff Weeks (Jets) as their assistant defensive line coach.

Footballguys view: Rex Ryan's new coaching staff is taking shape with some interesting hires. Of course, the one which could matter most is Greg Roman, offensive coordinator. Ryan has always struggled with managing his offense, and if he doesn't get his choice of coordinator right, this will continue and could sink him in Buffalo as it did in New York.

Bills | EJ Manuel not guaranteed QB job    Wed Jan 14, 12:35 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will receive the opportunity to compete for the starting quarterback job but will not be given the job, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: Manuel has a very similar skillset and weaknesses to Colin Kaepernick, who new Bills OC Greg Roman made a success (at least for a few years) in San Francisco. Manuel's value is up on these moves, but could dwindle back to near zero by the time the regular season starts if he can't show well in the competition.

Bills | Jim Schwartz out    Tue Jan 13, 08:29 AM

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will not return in 2015, largely because of differing defensive philosophies with new head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: This was never going to work from a philosophical standpoint. Ryan is a traditional 3-4 guy, while Schwartz believes in the "Wide 9" 4-3 defensive scheme. The Bills had a fantastic defense under Schwartz because he's a helluva coordinator. Any team that adds him will get an improved defense.

Bills | Dennis Thurman to be DC    Mon Jan 12, 07:54 PM

Former New York Jets defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman will be the next defensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, while head coach Rex Ryan will call the defensive plays.

Bills | C.J. Spiller happy about Rex Ryan hire    Mon Jan 12, 04:34 PM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller said he likes the team's hiring of head coach Rex Ryan, because Ryan likes to run the ball and have a physical offense.

Footballguys view: Spiller is a free agent this year, and there's no guarantee that he'll return to the Bills. We'll have to wait and see what happens once free agency opens up. The market is unlikely to be on fire for Spiller's services. He's talented, but the oft-injured back has failed to perform up to expectations after being selected in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft.

Bills | Greg Roman agrees to become Bills' OC    Mon Jan 12, 01:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Greg Roman has agreed to become the Buffalo Bills new offensive coordinator, according to a source. Roman is expected to travel to Buffalo Monday, Jan. 12, and sign a contract.

Bills | Hire Rex Ryan    Sun Jan 11, 08:57 AM

Free-agent head coach Rex Ryan (Jets) signed a five-year, $27.5 million contract with the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Jan. 11.

Footballguys view: Wow, just wow. The Bills get arguably the best coach available on the market right now. Ryan stays in the division with this move, and he inherits a team with a world-class defense. He's expected to bring in Greg Roman to run the offense, while Jim Schwartz will continue to run the defense.

Bills | Jerry Hughes not interested in discount    Fri Jan 9, 02:39 PM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent DE Jerry Hughes said he is interested in re-signing with the Bills but is not willing to take a discount in order to return.

Footballguys view: We could see Hughes signed to a big contract this offseason, but whether or not he remains in Buffalo is a question mark. General manager Doug Whaley said the team will try to re-sign Hughes in the offseason.

Bills | Doug Whaley still high on EJ Manuel    Wed Jan 7, 12:33 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel's struggles this past season were related to coaching issues, according to general manager Doug Whaley. Whaley has been telling this to head coaching candidates and has talked in glowing terms about Manuel during interviews, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Even though Manuel has been a bust to this point, the Bills are not giving up on him. Manuel has a strong work ethic, so he'll put in as much work as possible to turn things around. Expect the Bills to bring another QB or two on board to compete for the starting job in 2015.

Bills | Mike Shanahan interviews    Mon Jan 5, 12:59 PM

Former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan met with Buffalo Bills owners Terry and Kim Pegula Sunday, Jan. 4, regarding the team's head coaching position.

Footballguys view: Shanahan is making the rounds after spending 2014 out of football. Several teams have interest, but Buffalo could be the most-likely landing spot. If added, Shanahan might try to see if the Bills could add QB Kirk Cousins via trade. Cousins was drafted by Shanahan in the fourth round of the 2012 NFL draft, and he is a favorite of the veteran coach.

Bills | Want to speak to Rex Ryan    Fri Jan 2, 11:53 AM

The Buffalo Bills want to speak to free-agent coach Rex Ryan (Jets) about their opening. There is nothing planned at this time though.

Footballguys view: Ryan is generating a lot of attention around the league. The Bills already have a strong defense, and Ryan is known as a defensive coach. They need to find a quarterback and spark the offense if they want to make a championship run.

Bills | Request permission to interview Adam Gase    Thu Jan 1, 07:47 PM

The Buffalo Bills have requested permission to speak with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase for their head coaching position, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Gase is a hot coaching candidate right now. The Falcon and 49ers are also interested in the young coach. We doubt that he stays with the Broncos next year.

Bills | Bill Polian returns to Buffalo    Thu Jan 1, 01:52 AM

Sources indicate Bill Polian will return to the Buffalo Bills in a team president or 'football czar' capacity. The move, however, may not officially be announced until late January due to other commitments Polian has.

Footballguys view: This report sounds premature as ESPN's Chris Mortensen is reporting that Polian is going to stay with ESPN. Stay tuned.

Buffalo Bills LB Kiko Alonso (knee) could be cleared soon, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Alonso tore his anterior cruciate ligament last offseason and is currently on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.
