Bills | Less shotgun for LeSean McCoy    Mon Feb 12, 04:31 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy saw a career-low in percentage of carries from the shotgun formation last season (17%). Interestingly, that percentage has decreased in each of his last five years. Furthermore, his yards per carry and yards after contact were also the lowest of his nine-year career.

Footballguys view: We'll see if the Bills offense continues this trend in 2018. The Bills hired Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to take over after moving on from their 2017 OC Rick Dennison.

Bills | Buffalo eyeing a QB in draft?    Fri Feb 9, 09:15 PM

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane has yet to endorse QB Tyrod Taylor as the long-term answer at quarterback, and Mike Rodak of ESPN.com believes the Bills could bundle some of their draft picks to move up and select a quarterback early in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We'd be surprised if Taylor is with the Bills for the 2018 season. They have two picks in the first round (21st, 22nd) and could use those assets to move into better position for a franchise quarterback.

Bills | Ryan Groy favorite for center job    Sat Feb 3, 05:12 PM

Buffalo Bills OG Ryan Groy appears to be the leading candidate for the starting center job at this point, in the opinion of BuffaloBills.com's Chris Brown.

Footballguys view: Groy was a PFF Secret Superstar in 2016 when he filled for Wood for seven games. The team should be in good hands at center, but the overall depth on the line took a big hit.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor not taking pay cut    Fri Feb 2, 06:52 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor said he hopes to remain with the Bills but is not willing to take a pay cut.

Footballguys view: Even last offseason, it felt like the forces pushing Taylor and the Bills apart were stronger than those keeping them together. Head coach Sean McDermott surprisingly kept him, the team surprisingly made the playoffs, and unsurprisingly still it seems he is not the team's choice to be their quarterback. He could be a very interesting backup in Jacksonville or have a chance to fill a hole in Arizona or Denver or with the Jets until they find a long term solution. Taylor is one of the 32 best quarterbacks in the league, but his limitations will keep a team from committing to him as a long term quarterback.

Bills | Kirk Cousins won't see Bills' pursuit    Thu Feb 1, 09:19 AM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is unlikely to be pursued by the Buffalo Bills, in the opinion of beat writer Mark Gaughan.

Footballguys view: The Bills don't have the money and aren't as attractive as several other teams in the hunt from a "win-now" standpoint. It could be they are determined to make a run at keeping Tyrod Taylor as well, or jumping on a lower-hype player who hits the market.

Bills | Buffalo hires John Butler    Wed Jan 31, 01:10 AM

The Buffalo Bills hired John Butler (Texans) to be the team's defensive backs coach Tuesday, Jan. 30. In a related move, Gill Byrd, who served in that capacity in 2017, was not retained.

Footballguys view: Butler's secondaries in Houston were adequate at times, but the defense benefited from JJ Watt up front. The Bills had an outstanding year in the secondary in 2017, so the move away from Byrd is surprising.

Bills | Mike Waufle calls it a career    Mon Jan 29, 11:34 PM

Buffalo Bills defensive line coach Mike Waufle announced his retirement Monday, Jan. 29, after 20 seasons in the NFL. Assistant defensive line coach Bill Teerlinck was named as his replacement.

Footballguys view: Waufle has a ring from his stint with the Giants and he coached up Aaron Donald with the Rams in his last stop before Buffalo. Teerlinck's dad won two rings on NFL coaching staffs and he was Nevada's defensive line coach and co-defensive coordinator before joining the Bills staff last year.

Bills | Eric Wood suffers career-threatening injury    Fri Jan 26, 11:02 AM

Buffalo Bills C Eric Wood (neck) has suffered a career-threatening neck injury, which is partially due to wear and tear, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Wood has been a stalwart since being drafted in 2009 and he didn't miss a game in four of the last five seasons. When he did in 2016, backup Ryan Groy was outstanding enough to be a PFF Secret Superstar. The Bills offensive line should be okay with Groy under contract for 2018. Wood was by all accounts an outstanding human being and teammate in addition to player on the field and he will be missed by the Bills organization.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor's future in Buffalo unclear?    Tue Jan 23, 05:00 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor's future with the team was not addressed Tuesday, Jan. 23, as head coach Sean McDermott declined to comment on the topic. McDermott simply said the coaching staff will continue to evaluate.

Footballguys view: We highly doubt the Bills will keep Taylor on the team in 2018. Expect the team to try and trade Taylor if they can. He's got a cap number of $18 million in 2018, and there is $8.6 million in dead money.

Bills | Cordy Glenn making progress    Fri Jan 19, 05:50 PM

Buffalo Bills OT Cordy Glenn (ankle, foot) is making progress in his rehab and is on track to participate in offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Glenn has only played in 17 games over the last two years. The Bills may look to trade the 2012 second-round pick, but that may prove to be difficult with his history of ankle/foot problems.

Bills | Zay Jones has successful surgery    Thu Jan 18, 09:47 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones (shoulder) underwent successful surgery to repair a torn labrum on Tuesday, Jan. 16. According to a source, Jones' injury wasn't revealed until last week during a standard season-ending MRI examination.

Footballguys view: Jones, the FBS all-time leading receiver, had a rough rookie season highlighted by too many drops. Perhaps this injury kept him from playing like most expected coming out of East Carolina.

Bills | Kelvin Benjamin to have surgery    Mon Jan 15, 12:12 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) said he will undergo knee surgery at some point this offseason.

Footballguys view: Good news for Benjamin and the Bills here. For most of his time with the Bills this year, Benjamin was basically playing on one leg. Bills head coach Sean McDermott said, "We know what Kelvin Benjamin is capable of when he's healthy. He showed his leadership while playing injured and we're excited to get him healthy this offseason."

Bills | Buffalo hires Brian Daboll    Sun Jan 14, 11:21 PM

The Buffalo Bills have hired Alabama offensive coordinator Brian Daboll to fill their vacant offensive coordinator position.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting hire coming off another title for Alabama, but Daboll has already had three coordinator jobs with the NFL (Browns, Chiefs, Dolphins) and none of them were overly successful. The situation in Buffalo is going to look different next year, especially at quarterback as we expect them to move on from Tyrod Taylor. The centerpiece of the offense should still be RB LeSean McCoy.

Bills | Zay Jones to undergo surgery    Sun Jan 14, 12:03 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones (shoulder) is scheduled to undergo surgery Tuesday, Jan. 16, to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder that he played with for the majority of the season, according to his father.

Footballguys view: Jones had a disappointing rookie season despite ample opportunities for a large role in a weak Bills wide receiver corps. 2018 will be crucial for his development, but Jones will be in an offense is under construction.

Bills | Mike McCoy not headed to Buffalo    Fri Jan 12, 09:53 PM

Former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy will not be hired as the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Earlier reports indicated that McCoy and Colts OC Rob Chudzinsky were the two top candidates to replace Rick Dennison in Buffalo. Both have ties to the Carolina Panthers as does Bills head coach Sean McDermott. McCoy was fired as the Broncos OC after a season where he thought the team would have a prolific passing game with Trevor Siemian. Instead, the season fell apart and McCoy found himself out of work.

Bills | Rick Dennison fired    Fri Jan 12, 11:35 AM

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Rick Dennison was fired Friday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: Dennison is out after only one year as the Bills offensive coordinator. When Gary Kubiak retired as the head coach of the Broncos after the 2016 season, many of his assistants were left to find work elsewhere. Dennison was the Broncos OC then latched on rather quickly to lead the Bills offense. He can craft a strong rushing attack (like he did with the Bills in 2017), and Dennison should have a few options around the league. Expect Buffalo to get a new quarterback along with their new offensive coordinator for the 2018 season.

Buffalo Bills S L.J. McCray and LB Xavier Woodson-Luster were signed to Reserve/Future contracts Wednesday, Jan. 10.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander not ready to retire    Tue Jan 9, 01:36 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander wants to play at least through the remainder of his contract, which expires at the end of the 2018 season.

Footballguys view: Entering his age-35 season in 2018, Alexander has certainly flourished in two seasons with the Bills. He has a $2.4 million cap number in 2018 and should be able to make one final run with Buffalo.

Bills | Cordy Glenn could be cap casualty    Tue Jan 9, 10:35 AM

Buffalo Bills OT Cordy Glenn could be traded or released to save money against the salary cap in 2018. A trade would save the team $4.85 million, and they would save $3.4 million if he were released before June 1.

Footballguys view: Glenn has played in only 17 games over the last two years because of foot and ankle problems. His best days as a left tackle may be behind him, but the 2012 second-round pick may be able to get some quality time as a right tackle...if he can stay healthy.

Bills | Buffalo signs nine players to future contracts    Mon Jan 8, 04:54 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Quan Bray, P Cory Carter, TE Jason Croom, RB Aaron Green, OT Josh James, DE Marquavius Lewis, S Dean Marlowe, C Adam Redmond and OT De'Ondre Wesley were signed to Reserve/Future contracts Monday, Jan. 8.

Footballguys view: Croom was picked up as an undrafted free agent in 2017 out of the University of Tennessee. He plays like a super-sized wide receiver and can create mismatches when he's on the field. Croom is still developing as a route-runner, but his athleticism makes him a player we'll be monitoring in super deep dynasty leagues.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander totals 10 tackles    Sun Jan 7, 05:47 PM

Bills | Kelvin Benjamin does nothing in loss    Sun Jan 7, 05:44 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Kelvin Benjamin posted one reception for nine yards on two targets in the AFC Wild Card playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: The Bills tried to get him some red zone work but the passes were off the mark. Benjamin was banged up with the Bills for most of the time he was there. In 2018, Benjamin should be their no1 WR but he may have a new quarterback throwing him passes. Tyrod Taylor may not be back with the Bills next season.

Bills | Zay Jones finishes with 20 yards    Sun Jan 7, 04:55 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones caught two passes for 20 yards against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card playoff game Sunday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: Jones had a drop (surprise, surprise) late in the game when the Bills were desperately trying to drive down for a touchdown. The rookie is the FBS all-time leader in receptions but he finishes his rookie year with pedestrian numbers and concerns about his concentration and ability to get open at the pro level.

Bills | LeSean McCoy surpasses 100 total yards    Sun Jan 7, 04:46 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy rushed for 75 yards on 19 carries against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card playoff game Sunday, Jan. 7. He also caught six passes for 44 yards during the game.

Footballguys view: McCoy clearly wasn't himself as he came into this game battling an ankle injury that limited him in practice all week. He did what he could and fought through the ankle problem but the Bills couldn't get much offense generated around him.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor struggles in playoff game    Sun Jan 7, 04:41 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor went 17-for-37 for 134 yards and one interception against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the Wild Card playoff game Sunday, Jan. 7. He also rushed for 27 yards on seven carries.

Footballguys view: Taylor showed toughness in this one, getting battered all day and finally getting knocked out late with a concussion. The interception he threw was on a batted pass, and generally Taylor was safe with the football. He just didn't push it down field much and when he did the deep passes did not connect.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor in protocol    Sun Jan 7, 04:37 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor (concussion) left the Wild Card playoff game early and is going through the concussion protocol.

Footballguys view: Taylor was battered all day against the Jaguars. He exited the game late and rookie QB Nate Peterman took over as the Bills were trying to make a desperation comeback.
