Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy said he still feels young and owes his longevity to his ability to avoid big hits.

Bills | Reggie Ragland has target weight    Fri Jul 21, 08:26 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Reggie Ragland said his playing weight is not allowed to be over 255 pounds or he will be fined $600 for every pound he is over that target weight. He said he currently weighs 250 pounds.

Bills | Anquan Boldin to visit Monday    Fri Jul 21, 02:17 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Lions) is scheduled to meet with the Buffalo Bills on Monday, July 24.

Footballguys view: An interesting signing if it happens, and it could hurt rookie Zay Jones' stock a bit. While Boldin's better days are behind him, he is a good enough possession receiver that we could see Tyrod Taylor leaning on him quote a bit. He would also be good insurance against yet another Sammy Watkins foot injury.

Bills | Zay Jones impressed during spring    Fri Jul 21, 12:19 PM

Buffalo Bills second-round WR Zay Jones 'performed well in spring practices' and 'looked the part of a top three wideout,' according to BuffaloBills.com contributing correspondent Jake Hamilton.

Footballguys view: As banged up as Sammy Watkins is, short term Zay Jones could have some value at some point this season. Long term, the Bills didn't pick up Watkins' extension which could mean a bigger role for Jones in 2018. Right now he's tracking as the 66th receiver off the board in early drafts. He has value, but clearly the market is cautious, as it should be.

Bills | Shaq Lawson impressive    Tue Jul 18, 11:02 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson has looked 'fantastic with his hand in the ground coming off the edge so far,' according to fellow defensive end Jerry Hughes.

Footballguys view: A 4-3 defensive end in college at Clemson, Lawson was drafted in the first round last year and played outside linebacker for Rex Ryan. With Ryan gone and Sean McDermott taking over, Lawson will go back to his more natural position.

Bills | LeSean McCoy excited for offense    Thu Jul 13, 09:13 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy said he is excited about the zone running scheme offensive coordinator Rick Dennison is implementing this year. 'With this offense they give you different options whether it's inside or outside,' McCoy said. 'When you want to stretch it, you can stretch it just enough to get the DBs where you want them so you can cut inside.'

Footballguys view: Dennison is a Shanahan/Kubiak disciple and the zone-blocking system is a perfect fit for McCoy. The choice is to "bend, bang or bounce" as the offensive line moves laterally in front of the back. McCoy is an expert at knowing when/how to run with proper patience in that system. He's a top-5 fantasy back already, but we wouldn't be shocked to see him finish the year as the best RB in fantasy football.

Bills | Matt Milano may have limited role    Wed Jul 12, 02:32 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Matt Milano may only be used in obvious passing downs this season because he only weighs 223 pounds at this point and could be overmatched by opponent's running games.

Bills | Ramon Humber may not have size to start    Wed Jul 12, 02:26 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Ramon Humber appears to be an unlikely candidate for one of the starting outside linebacker jobs because his size could make him a target for opponent's rushing attacks, in the opinion of BuffaloBills.com's Canio Marasco. He could become a nickel linebacker because he showed good coverage skills in the passing game.

Bills | Gerald Hodges worked on strong side     Wed Jul 12, 02:21 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Gerald Hodges lined up mostly at strongside linebacker during offseason workouts and has a chance to win one of the starting outside linebacker jobs during training camp.

Bills | Reggie Ragland could shift outside    Tue Jul 11, 09:41 AM

Buffalo Bills LB Reggie Ragland could shift to outside linebacker if LB Preston Brown wins the starting middle linebacker job.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Alabama in 2016, Ragland was lost for his entire rookie season due to a knee injury. The Bills saw Ragland as a great option as an inside hammer in Rex Ryan's 3-4 defense, but now he's a bit of an odd fit in the 4-3 scheme they're running this year. Ragland had speed concerns that could be exposed in coverage, so he's just a two-down thumper no matter where he lines up in 2017.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander to be used different ways?    Tue Jul 11, 09:40 AM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander could be used in a number of ways because the team seems to want someone else to win the starting outside linebacker job for him to roam.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Cal in 2007, Alexander had 9.0 career sacks heading into last season. In 2016, Alexander was an out of nowhere breakout performer with 12.5 sacks for the Bills. This year, they need to get him after the passer early and often...no matter where he lines up.

Bills | Shaq Lawson comfortable with defense    Mon Jul 10, 06:57 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson said he is comfortable with the defense that head coach Sean McDermott is bringing to the team because it is the same scheme he played at Clemson.

Footballguys view: He was a 4-3 defensive end in college but Rex Ryan wanted him to play outside linebacker in the Bills 3-4 last season. That just didn't fit his game and Lawson struggled through injuries as a rookie. More comfortable and in a better fit, Lawson can thrive as an edge-setting defensive end.

Bills | Ronald Darby may cover No. 1 receivers    Mon Jul 10, 06:56 PM

Buffalo Bills CB Ronald Darby may be asked to cover the opponent's top receiver this season since he is the team's No. 1 cornerback. Darby said he believes he is ready to handle that role.

Bills | Anquan Boldin a fit in Buffalo?    Sun Jul 9, 08:56 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (Bills) is going to be signed, in the opinion of Brian Baldinger of the NFL Network, and Baldinger believes the Buffalo Bills are the best fit for Boldin.

Footballguys view: Boldin would be a big upgrade at the #2 receiver spot for Buffalo even at this late stage of his career, although the team doesn't use a slot receiver as much as the Lions did last year. Boldin might have to wait for an injury to an established receiver to get a call from a team.

Bills | Three Bills CBs options at nickel back    Mon Jul 3, 06:38 PM

Buffalo Bills CBs Kevon Seymour, Shareece Wright and Leonard Johnson are expected to compete for the nickel back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Bills will also be breaking into a rookie corner (first round pick Tre'Davious White) and Ronald Darby will be their #1, so this is a vulnerable secondary coming into the season. If the front seven can't generate enough pressure to mask the weakness, the Bills will be a pass defense we are targeting throughout the year.

Bills | Shaq Lawson expected to be more comfortable    Sun Jul 2, 04:28 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson is expected to be more comfortable in the team's new 4-3 defensive alignment because he will be lining up at defensive end. Lawson never felt truly comfortable as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defensive alignment.

Footballguys view: Lawson was limited to 10 games during his rookie year in 2016. The first-round pick had a shoulder injury coming out of Clemson and he had a minor knee procedure this offseason. The team needs him to have a breakout season and avoid any sort of sophomore slump in 2017. Lawson has a powerful lower body and violent striking hands. The best part of his game can be featured as an edge-setting defensive end.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander to be strong-side LB in '17    Sun Jul 2, 02:17 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander will be a strong-side linebacker in the team's 4-3 defensive alignment this season under head coach Sean McDermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier after serving mostly as a pass-rushing outside linebacker last year under former head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners in IDP leagues need to take note here. Alexander is unlikely to have as many pass-rushing snaps, but he's a full-time linebacker and could see his tackle total rise from the 50 tackles he had last year.

Bills | Dion Dawkins expected to compete for RT job    Sat Jul 1, 02:05 PM

Buffalo Bills OT Dion Dawkins is expected to compete with OT Jordan Mills during training camp. Dawkins worked at left tackle during offseason workouts, but OT Cordy Glenn (ankle) is expected to be ready for camp.

Footballguys view: With Glenn out during OTAs and minicamp it was the rookie Dawkins who was lining up at left tackle. Glenn will be back and Dawkins will have to outperform Mills for the starting right tackle position. A second-round pick out of Temple, Dawkins is massive at 6'4" 315 pounds and he has the length scouts love. He's a naturally powerful player who wants to maul every opponent he faces. That sounds more like a right tackle than a left tackle, and there's a chance he could end up inside at guard too.

Bills | Charles Clay to be limited in practices    Fri Jun 30, 09:42 PM

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) will have his snaps limited in practices this season to try to manage his chronic knee issues, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Footballguys view: Clay's knee injury is something that must be handled correctly during the week. The team is likely to limit him in training camp as well. That leaves more reps available for guys like Nick O'Leary and converted quarterback Logan Thomas.

Bills | Jonathan Williams won't be disciplined    Thu Jun 29, 11:35 AM

Buffalo Bills RB Jonathan Williams won't be disciplined by the NFL under the substance abuse policy. Williams was recently found not guilty in a case involving a DWI.

Footballguys view: That's good news for people looking to handcuff Williams to LeSean McCoy. We think Williams will get some carries, but unless McCoy gets injured, the backup will remain just that--a backup.

Bills | Nathan Peterman to push for No. 2 QB job    Wed Jun 28, 06:19 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Nathan Peterman looked like a rookie during offseason workouts but is expected to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We like Peterman as a prospect in deep dynasty leagues. Tyrod Taylor's future in Buffalo is not a lock, and Peterman has some developmental upside. Peterman looked good during his college career at PITT (Tennessee transfer), and there are some in the scouting community that compare his skill set to that of Kirk Cousins (Washington). He'll compete with Cardale Jones to be the backup behind Taylor in 2017.

Bills | Walter Powell may not make team    Wed Jun 28, 06:03 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Walter Powell may be a long shot to make the final roster because of his four-game suspension.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2014 NFL draft, Powell caught 14 passes for the Bills over nine games last year. He'd be fourth (at best) on the Bills depth chart if he makes the 53-man roster. With this suspension, the Bills don't have to decide his fate until he's eligible to return in October.

Bills | Jonathan Williams works on ball security    Wed Jun 28, 06:02 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Jonathan Williams has worked on improving his ball security this offseason after head coach Sean McDermott said it was an area Williams needed to work on. Williams lost two fumbles on 28 carries in 2016.

Footballguys view: Williams has good dynasty potential because of his natural running style, instincts for the position and power between the tackles. He needs to hang onto the rock if he wants to get some touches as LeSean McCoy's primary backup in 2017.

Bills | Eric Wood expects to be 100 percent    Wed Jun 28, 03:01 PM

Buffalo Bills C Eric Wood (leg) was able to participate in offseason workouts and expects to be 100 percent at the start of training camp barring a setback. 'It went great. I missed one day the first week of OTAs and we had planned that if I had any setbacks or got too sore I would take a day off, but I didn't need a day off the rest of the time. So I'm encouraged. I definitely should be 100 percent barring anything crazy happening over the next month. So I'm looking forward to it,' Wood told BuffaloBills.com earlier in June.

Bills | Rashad Ross hopes to be more than returner    Wed Jun 28, 02:43 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Rashad Ross hopes to be more of a kick and punt returner and would like to have a role on offense. Ross has worked out with Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR DeSean Jackson and has learned how to use his speed better and run better routes.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Arizona State in 2013, Ross has speed to burn. He's bounced around the league seemingly each year, and Ross has been on seven pro teams during his career. Ross needs to make the 53-man roster (he's not a lock) before worrying about a role on offense.

Bills | Zay Jones call offense explosive    Sun Jun 25, 10:04 PM

Kyle Silagyi, of Billswire/USA Today, reports Buffalo Bills rookie wide receiver Zay Jones has high praise for the offense. In a recent Facebook Live chat, Jones said "I would say 'explosive,' with all the weapons that we have right now, with Tyrod, Sammy, and [LeSean] Shady [McCoy] especially. Also 'dominant,' with our O-line and the running game that we have."

Footballguys view: Bills offensive coordinator Rick Dennison has been a part of some productive offenses, mostly during his time in Houston as OC under Gary Kubiak. The system is structured around zone blocking and play action passing. Jones finished his college career at East Carolina as the FBS all-time leader in receptions. He's clearly talented and extremely driven. If Sammy Watkins struggles with injuries again this year, Jones could have an opportunity to do more. Jones should only be a consideration for fantasy owners as a late-round lottery ticket.

Bills | Sammy Watkins to be limited to open camp    Sun Jun 25, 08:52 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) is unlikely to be ready for a full workload when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Watkins had surgery to repair his foot back in January. He hasn't played a full season in two years, and the Bills are wise to ease him into action. The team didn't pick up his fifth-year option, and Watkins has millions of reasons to play up to his amazing potential in a contract year.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor impresses    Tue Jun 20, 10:14 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor has impressed head coach Sean McDermott. 'I've really been impressed with the leadership,' McDermott said. '(He displayed) the intangible qualities that are inherent or must be inherent to that quarterback position. I've watched him develop in those areas and that's important as we look to move forward. There's leadership qualities at that quarterback position that are important to winning football games, and I think he's done a nice job in that area.'

Footballguys view: Taylor needed to grow into his role as a leader with the Bills and it sounds like that's what he did. He's a playmaking quarterback who throws a beautiful deep pass, but Taylor needs to play with better consistency and accuracy. Taylor is the Bills starter for the 2017 season, but there is some question as to whether or not he's a long-term answer for the franchise.

Bills | Cardale Jones could be on bubble    Wed Jun 14, 05:26 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones could be on the roster bubble because he was fourth in the quarterback rotation during practice Wednesday, June 14, behind QBs Tyrod Taylor, T.J. Yates and Nathan Peterman.

Footballguys view: Jones has a big arm but little control as a passer. He'll need to show consistent accuracy during training camp and the preseason if he wants to stay with the Bills. Taylor is the clear-cut starter and Peterman is an interesting developmental quarterback we have a lot of deep dynasty love for.

Bills | LeSean McCoy on the field Wednesday    Wed Jun 14, 02:43 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (illness) is participating in practice Wednesday, June 14.

Footballguys view: McCoy is set for a major workload again as the centerpiece of the Bills offense. Getting over 1,000 yards rushing and 45 or so catches is fair to project for the star back. McCoy should be a top-5 fantasy back no matter the format in 2017.

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (illness) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 13, because of an illness.

Footballguys view: McCoy is set for a major workload again as the centerpiece of the Bills offense. Getting over 1,000 yards rushing and 45 or so catches is fair to project for the star back. McCoy should be a top-5 fantasy back no matter the format in 2017.

Bills | Coach happy with Andre Holmes    Tue Jun 13, 08:14 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Andre Holmes has been a standout performer on offense and special teams this offseason, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Footballguys view: There's not much production to mine from the Bills passing game. LeSean McCoy is the primary fantasy asset from the Bills roster with Sammy Watkins behind him in the pecking order. Holmes is competing with Corey Brown to be the no2 wideout behind Watkins, but even if he wins the job there won't be much fantasy value here.

Bills | Jonathan Williams key to Bills' success    Tue Jun 13, 03:20 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Jonathan Williams' development will be vital to the Bills' future success, according to head coach Sean McDermott.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners should be drooling over this story here. Williams was a fine back in college at Arkansas, displaying toughness and instinct as a runner. He's currently getting first-team reps in minicamp with LeSean McCoy out sick (stomach virus). Williams could be in line for a larger role with the Bills in the future. McCoy (29 in July) isn't getting any younger, and there's an out in his contract after this season (plus no guaranteed money past 2017).

Bills | Sammy Watkins involved in team drills    Tue Jun 13, 02:56 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) participated in team drills at minicamp Tuesday, June 13. Head coach Sean McDermott said Watkins has responded well to a bigger workload and that workload will continue to be increased as long as Watkins can handle it.

Footballguys view: Watkins has been limited by injury over the last two seasons, and we thought the Bills were going to take it easy on him in minicamp. They must believe that he can do more than some thought with the idea that he'll be full go for training camp.

Bills | Mike Tolbert active in run game    Tue Jun 13, 01:28 PM

Buffalo Bills FB Mike Tolbert has received a heavy dose of carries this spring and could fill the void of a backup running back behind RB LeSean McCoy.

Footballguys view: Tolbert is more than just a blocking fullback. He can tote the rock in short-yardage and even goal-line situations if need be. Tolbert will compete with Jonathan Williams for carries/touches behind McCoy in 2017.

Bills | Zay Jones fine with Jeremy Maclin interest    Sat Jun 10, 02:04 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones said he has no problems with the team's interest in free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) and would like to learn from Maclin if he signs with the Bills.

Footballguys view: The rookie would not have a problem with any sort of addition like that. Jones was one of the most productive players at his position to come out this year, and he's got fine upside himself once he gets used to the pro game. The Bills could use Maclin now as he could immediately contribute as a starter opposite Sammy Watkins. Jones is competing with guys like Corey Brown and Andre Holmes for snaps/targets behind Watkins at this time.

Bills | Buffalo could pursue Gary Barnidge    Sat Jun 10, 01:16 PM

Free-agent TE Gary Barnidge (Browns) could be an option for the Buffalo Bills if he is willing to accept the veteran minimum, in the opinion of BuffaloBills.com's Chris Brown.

Footballguys view: Starting tight end Charles Clay made it through 15 games last year but he's got chronic knee problems. Coach Sean McDermott said the Bills are "concerned with Charles (Clay's) knee situation." They'll take it easy on Clay and have their eye out for talent at the position that could help. Barnidge is a big-bodied receiver who would be an upgrade over Nick O'Leary or Logan Thomas.

Bills | Sammy Watkins to be limited    Thu Jun 8, 10:46 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) will be limited in practice Thursday, June 8.

Footballguys view: We know they're being cautious but seriously, when is Watkins not hurt? The upside for him is great, even if he isn't all that healthy. He continually produces when he's on the field. He's just been off it too frequently the last two years. He's going as the No. 30 player off the board and is the 15th receiver taken in drafts right now, based on the upside, but he is a bit risky right now. We're hoping to see him fully healthy before the season.

Bills | Zay Jones to practice fully    Thu Jun 8, 10:43 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Zay Jones (knee) will participate in practice fully Thursday, June 8.

Footballguys view: The Bills will probably be cautious with him and we're a bit hesitant to laud a rookie in a run-centered offense anyway. Jones did see a ton of targets in East Carolina's offense, and could see a fair share in Buffalo behind Sammy Watkins. Also, Watkins is consistently hurt, so Jones could see a lot of targets this season in that event. That said, we aren't expecting a lot from him. With an ADP of 197 and as the No. 70 receiver off the board, it appears the fantasy community is feeling the same way.

Free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) has finished his visit with the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, June 7, and is scheduled to meet with the Baltimore Ravens next, according to a source.

Footballguys view: He's leaving with options as Maclin is scheduled to visit with the Ravens. The Bills could use some proven talent behind Sammy Watkins, and Maclin would likely be an upgrade over guys they added earlier this offseason like Corey Brown and Andre Holmes.
