Buffalo Bills QB Cardale Jones has a long way to go before he is ready to be a starting quarterback in the NFL, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said he believes Jones is in a good situation since he can sit behind QBs Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel while he develops his skills.

Bills | Looking to work out deal with Stephon Gilmore    Tue May 3, 10:57 PM

Buffalo Bills CB Stephon Gilmore is a player the team would like to lock up with a long-term contract. General manager Doug Whaley said Tuesday, May 3, that he is 'supremely confident there's a chance' the team can get a deal done with Gilmore.

Footballguys view: With left tackle Cordy Glenn getting a new long-term deal, the Bills can now move on to other key players. Gilmore is in the final year of his contract, and his fifth-year option is going to pay him $11 million this year.

Bills | Buffalo wants to lock up Tyrod Taylor    Tue May 3, 10:57 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor is a player the team wants to lock up with a long-term deal, and general manager Doug Whaley said Tuesday, May 3, he is 'supremely confident there's a chance' a deal will get done.

Footballguys view: Things change quickly around here. Not that long ago, there were rumblings that Taylor may be unhappy with the Bills and the team could move on. Now, (with LT Cordy Glenn wrapped up) the team is looking to get a new deal with Taylor done. Taylor is only making $1 million this year which is incredibly low considering that a guy like Mark Sanchez (Broncos) is making $4.5 million.

Bills | Cordy Glenn agrees to deal    Tue May 3, 06:23 PM

Buffalo Bills OT Cordy Glenn agreed to terms on a five-year deal Tuesday, May 3. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2012 NFL draft, Glenn has become one of the league's best at the left tackle position. It was a wise move for the Bills to lock him up. Now they can move onto new deals for CB Stephon Gilmore and perhaps even QB Tyrod Taylor.

Bills | EJ Manuel's option not picked up    Mon May 2, 06:40 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel's fifth-year option is not being picked up by the team.

Footballguys view: Manuel was the first and only QB drafted in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. It was just a bad year for QBs, and Manuel has not impressed in the NFL. He's struggled to stay healthy and lost his job to Tyrod Taylor last year. This is likely to be his last season with the Bills.

Bills | Buffalo adds UDFAs    Sun May 1, 10:04 PM

The Buffalo Bills agreed to terms with undrafted free-agents DE Bryson Albright (Miami), WR Davonte Allen (Marshall), WR Gary Chambers (Arizona State), C Robert Kulger (Purdue), OL Jamison Lalk (Iowa State), QB Joe Licata (Buffalo), PK Marshall Morgan (Georgia), LB Eric Striker (Oklahoma), CB Julian Whigham (Syracuse) and DL Justin Zimmer (Ferris State) Sunday, May 1.

Jets | Sign Jason Vander Laan    Sun May 1, 02:17 PM

Free-agent QB Jason Vander Laan (Ferris State) signed an undisclosed contract with the New York Jets Sunday, May 1.

Footballguys view: Vander Laan is built like a linebacker at 6'3" 243, and he's as athletic as some starting linebackers in the NFL. The Jets pick of Christian Hackenberg got a lot of attention, but Vander Laan's development is also worth watching.

Bills | Glenn Gronkowski heads to Buffalo    Sat Apr 30, 11:50 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Glenn Gronkowski (Kansas State) has agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the Buffalo Bills Saturday, April 30.

Footballguys view: The final of the Gronkowski brothers, Glenn is a Fullback/H-back 'tweener. He would regularly line up in the slot then motion to the backfield as a lead blocker at Kansas State. That's what he'll do now if he makes the Bills.

Bills | Kolby Listenbee had surgery    Sat Apr 30, 04:32 PM

Buffalo Bills rookie WR Kolby Listenbee played all of the 2015 season at Texas Christian University with a sports hernia. Listenbee underwent surgery on the hernia following the NFL Combine.

Footballguys view: Listenbee has height, good hands and solid ball skills as well as the second gear to threaten defenses deep. His frame is too thin, and he's slow in and out of the breaks though, and he was inconsistent on hos deep routes last year.

Bills | Jonathan Williams going to Buffalo    Sat Apr 30, 03:14 PM

Former Arkansas RB Jonathan Williams was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 156th pick in the fifth round of the NFL draft Saturday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Williams is mired behind LeSeanMcCoy and Karlos Williams, and he has injury concerns but he has great feet, balance, power, and quickness. If McCoy gets into trouble resulting from his off-season incident in Philadelphia J.Williams will get some play along with Karlos Williams.

Bills | Buffalo selects Cardale Jones    Sat Apr 30, 02:26 PM

Former Ohio State QB Cardale Jones was selected by the Buffalo Bills with the 139th and last pick in the fourth round in the NFL draft Saturday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Jones has a lot of upside but is fairly raw. Greg Roman has his work cut out for him but if he can crack the code, Jones could be better than Tyrod Taylor has been, which is why the Bills don't seem like they care how long he stays.

Bills | No extension for Tyrod Taylor    Sat Apr 30, 02:18 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor will not receive a contract extension in light of the Bills drafting QB Cardale Jones. QB EJ Manuel's option is unlikely to be picked up, too.

Footballguys view: They've got a lot of work to do with Jones, though and Greg Roman has his work cut out here. That said, Jones' natural ability makes him intriguing and his upside is very high. Still, his floor is low right now and Taylor may end up the starter for some time anyway.

Bills | Reggie Ragland to compete in the middle    Fri Apr 29, 08:28 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Reggie Ragland will compete with LBs Preston Brown and Zach Brown for the starting middle linebacker spot in the Bills' 3-4 defense. General manager Doug Whaley views Ragland as a leader, though, and will bring something to the defense the Bills need, according to Whaley.

Footballguys view: They didn't take him for his singing voice, so we assume that the Bills have plans for him. Further, the linebackers were bad last year so every position could be up for grabs.

Bills | Reggie Ragland heading to Buffalo    Fri Apr 29, 07:55 PM

The Buffalo Bills selected Alabama LB Reggie Ragland with the No. 41 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29. The Bills traded up with the Chicago Bears for the selection.

Footballguys view: Ragland is an aggressive presence in the middle of a linebacker group and the Bills need some help shutting the middle of the field down. Ryan has addressed the linebackers with two big picks there and now has to work on the rest of the defense.

Bills | Buffalo trades up in second round    Fri Apr 29, 07:36 PM

The Buffalo Bills acquired the 41st overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft from the Chicago Bears in exchange for the 49th overall pick, a 2016 fourth-round pick and a 2017 fourth-round draft choice. The Bills picked LB Reggie Ragland with the selection.

Footballguys view: A very Rex Ryan pick as Ragland is a thumper who will help shore the middle up. Last season the linebackers were a joke and now they have added two potential impact players at the position.

Bills | Shaq Lawson will start as rookie    Fri Apr 29, 06:48 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Shaq Lawson will be one of the starting outside linebackers for the team in Week 1, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: The Bills added Reggie Ragland as well, so we're seeing an all-new, all-different linebacker corps in Buffalo. We still worry about Rob Ryan's ability to coach them, but we like the way this defense is looking.

Bills | Jacob Maxwell, A.J. Tarpley waived    Fri Apr 29, 06:16 PM

Buffalo Bills TE Jacob Maxwell and LB A.J. Tarpley were placed on no-recall waivers Friday, April 29.

Bills | Connor Cook an option for Buffalo?    Fri Apr 29, 04:44 PM

Michigan State QB Connor Cook could be an option for the Buffalo Bills if he is available when they pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft, in the opinion of CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: The question is his attitude and work ethic. Frankly, Rex Ryan's track record with quarterbacks hasn't been good but QB coach David Lee and offensive coordinator Greg Roman seem to have cracked the code for Tyrod Taylor. Maybe they could do the same with Cook.

Link to story

Bills | Shaq Lawson to start immediately    Fri Apr 29, 12:03 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Shaq Lawson is expected to start immediately at outside linebacker in head coach Rex Ryan's 3-4 defensive scheme, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: The Bills need defensive help, so sure, we expect him to jump right in. More of an impact will be whether Rob Ryan can coach a defense better than he did in New Orleans.

Bills | Shaq Lawson denies needing surgery    Fri Apr 29, 09:39 AM

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson (shoulder) said he doesn't need shoulder surgery, while at least six teams said they believe he will at some point.

Footballguys view: The Bills are gambling that any surgery is later than sooner, and this is very much like what the whole league is weighing about Myles Jack. Lawson should help a pass rush that was brutally inefficient last year and saw their sack production die off.

Bills | Shoulder surgery looms for Shaq Lawson     Thu Apr 28, 10:25 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson (shoulder) will need shoulder surgery at some point that will sideline him between four and six months, but it can probably wait until after next season, according to sources.

Footballguys view: We don't like the sound "probably" but if he can hold up this year, Lawson should be a big help for a defense which struggled to get at the quarterback last season.

Bills | Buffalo was hoping to trade back    Thu Apr 28, 10:18 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills LB Shaq Lawson was selected with the 19th pick in the 2016 NFL draft after the team was unable to find a trade partner to move back in the draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: There were several teams talking about moving up, but it seems like they weren't willing to pay the price. The Bills got a good player though, so it works out.

Bills | Shaq Lawson taken by Buffalo    Thu Apr 28, 10:15 PM

The Buffalo Bills selected Clemson DE Shaq Lawson with the 19th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Of course Rex Ryan got a Clemson guy. Of course he did. As Mike Mayock said on NFLN, "He can play inside or outside, and up or down. He has an explosive lower body and violent hands, and is quick off the edge."

Bills | Paxton Lynch an option for Buffalo?    Fri Apr 22, 06:34 PM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch could be an option for the Buffalo Bills if he is available when they pick, in the opinion of NFL Network's Mike Mayock. Mayock also believes the New York Jets would be interested in Lynch and may need to trade in front of the Bills if they want to select him.

Footballguys view: Lynch should be an option for the Bills, especially since they don't seem sold on the long-term future of Tyrod Taylor. We like what Taylor showed as a starter last year after waiting for years behind Joe Flacco for his chance to shine. However, Buffalo has interest in adding a young passer to the mix. We'll see if Lynch is even on the board when the Bills pick at 19th overall.

Bills | Buffalo meeting with Jarran Reed    Fri Apr 22, 04:26 PM

Alabama DT Jarran Reed is scheduled to have dinner with representatives from the Buffalo Bills this week.

Footballguys view: Reed didn't produce big stats at Alabama, but he held the point of attack and ate up double-teams consistently. Earlier this year at the Senior Bowl, Reed showed that he could get off the line quickly and get some push up the middle if called upon. He's a first-round talent, and the Bills could consider him with the 19th-overall pick.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor the guy in 2016    Wed Apr 20, 12:42 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor is the team's starter in 2016, and general manager Doug Whaley said the team wouldn't consider drafting a quarterback to compete with him in the first round of the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: This year chasing a quarterback is especially dangerous, certainly given the classes lack of top-end options. Taylor has upside and we're thinking he could continue to develop into a low-end QB2 for fantasy and a decent starter in the NFL.

Bills | No trade offers for Tyrod Taylor    Wed Apr 20, 12:40 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor hasn't generated any trade offers leading up to the NFL Draft, according to general manager Doug Whaley.

Footballguys view: Much like the Bills, it seems the NFL in general is not quite sure what Taylor is consistently capable of. They need to get him some more weapons, but overall we think he has the potential to take a nice step forward this year if he keeps his head. For fantasy, likely not more than a low-end QB2, someone you can use for a bye week or in a pinch.

Bills | Sammy Watkins arrives at workouts    Wed Apr 20, 10:24 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins arrived at offseason workouts Wednesday, April 20, after attending a youth camp the team was aware he was attending.

Footballguys view: Watkins is the least problem for the wide receivers, who need someone else to at least take advantage of, if not pull off, the coverage on Watkins. He has the potential to be a WR1/WR2 after a year where he took a sizable step forward, but he needs help and more stability in the offense.

Bills | Jarius Wynn moving to linebacker    Wed Apr 20, 12:41 AM

Buffalo Bills DE Jarius Wynn (knee) said in a radio interview Tuesday, April 19, that he has dropped 20 pounds and will play outside linebacker in 2016. He is making his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and he missed the 2015 season as a result. Wynn has been a career-long 3-4 defensive end and 4-3 defensive end.

Footballguys view: Rex Ryan finds value in guys who can do more than one thing and is adept at finding getting guys to play in positions and ways they normally don't. That said, we're not expecting a ton immediately from Wynn and continue to be concerned by the Bills defense coming into this year coached by an underwhelming Rob Ryan.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor working on footwork    Mon Apr 18, 12:26 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor said he's working on cleaning up his footwork in the pocket this offseason.

Footballguys view: Better footwork will lead to better accuracy for Taylor in 2016. He had great downfield accuracy and pass-placement when there's room enough for him to set up and throw. Taylor needs a better/quicker passing triangle with his feet when things are cramped in the pocket.
