Bills | New OC a good sign for Tyrod Taylor?    Fri Jan 20, 06:50 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor appears to have a good chance to remain with the team because he was part of the reason offensive coordinator Rick Dennison joined the coaching staff, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. 'It would make no sense if the Bills hired Rick Dennison and got rid of Tyrod Taylor, one of the reasons (Dennison) signed there. So do not be surprised if Taylor is back, maybe on some sort of restructured contract for cap reasons. But this is very good news for the Bills' starter.'

Footballguys view: Dennison worked with Taylor when the two were together in 2014 with the Baltimore Ravens. He'd be able to craft the Shanahan/Kubiak system which features zone blocking and play-action passing with the Bills. The former Broncos OC couldn't get things going in Denver during 2015 and 2016, but perhaps a change of scenery would do him some good.

Bills | Shaq Lawson has knee surgery    Fri Jan 20, 06:08 PM

Buffalo Bills DE/LB Shaq Lawson (knee) recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery but is expected to be cleared for offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in 2016 for the Bills, Lawson played in 10 games as a rookie and collected two sacks. This scope is no big deal, and Lawson should be in for a much larger role in 2017.

Bills | Sammy Watkins undergoes surgery    Fri Jan 20, 06:01 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot) underwent a second surgery on his injured foot last week.

Footballguys view: In 2016, Watkins had to deal with this foot injury and play through some discomfort. Originally it was thought that no surgery and only rest would be needed after his first surgery. Now, Watkins is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Bills | Buffalo hires Leslie Frazier as DC    Thu Jan 12, 08:43 PM

The Buffalo Bills hired Baltimore Ravens defensive backs coach Leslie Frazier as their defensive coordinator Thursday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: Frazier has some success before as a defensive coordinator and he certainly has the talent to work with in Buffalo, including three high draft picks from last year. The defense was inconsistent under Rex Ryan's head coaching tenure, and Frazier should get that under control.

Bills | Marquise Goodwin will be UFA    Thu Jan 12, 01:18 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Goodwin runs really fast in a straight line, but that's about the sum of his skills. Someone will take a shot on him for that alone, but his impact in any offense is limited and inconsistent.

Bills | Robert Woods to be free agent    Thu Jan 12, 01:17 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Woods had a lackluster time in Buffalo, but he might find a home and some success with a fresh start. We wouldn't be shocked if the Bills fire sale large portions of their offense, including letting guys like Woods go.

Bills | Sean McDermott to be Bills head coach    Wed Jan 11, 03:35 PM

Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott has agreed to become the Buffalo Bills new head coach.

Footballguys view: A defensive minded coach, McDermott is set to change the Bills to a 4-3 defense. He's never been a head coach in his career, and it will be interesting to see how he builds the offense. Mike McCoy may be added as the team's offensive coordinator, but we have no idea who the QB will be next year.

Bills | Sean McDermott to interview with BUF again    Wed Jan 11, 08:55 AM

Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will have his second interview with the Buffalo Bills for their head coaching vacancy Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Footballguys view: McDermott is the clear front-runner, and it's only a matter of time before the Bills hire him as their new head coach.

Bills | Mike McCoy could become Buffalo's OC    Tue Jan 10, 10:14 PM

Former San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy could join the Buffalo Bills as their offensive coordinator if Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott is named the new head coach. It appears 'things are headed that way at the moment.'

Footballguys view: McCoy would be a great fit for offensive coordinator no matter where he winds up. The Bills would be especially interesting as they have an unusual QB situation. Tyrod Taylor is likely to be released at some point this offseason and former first-round pick E.J. Manuel is a free agent. McCoy can work wonders with a QB (see Tim Tebow), and he'll likely have to do that again with the Bills.

Bills | Bills have 'zeroed in' on Sean McDermott    Tue Jan 10, 10:04 PM

The Buffalo Bills are 'zeroed in' on Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott to be their next head coach. There could be something 'finalized' in the next day or so.

Bills | Doug Whaley to retain control of roster    Tue Jan 10, 12:54 AM

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley will maintain control of the team's 53-man roster, no matter who gets hired as head coach.

Footballguys view: According to reports, the new head coach will have 'more power in the organization' which includes the hiring and firing of assistant coaches. That doesn't mean control over personnel. The buzz is that Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott have emerged as the two frontrunners for the Bills' head-coaching vacancy.

Bills | Buffalo to talk with Kris Richard Sunday    Sun Jan 8, 03:42 PM

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Kris Richard will interview for the Buffalo Bills head coaching position Sunday, Jan. 8.

Footballguys view: Richard played for Pete Carroll in college at USC, he then went to the NFL to play for a few years and then went back to USC to coach under Carroll. When Carroll left for Seattle, Richard followed him and now is getting interest as a head coach. A two-year defensive coordinator with Seattle (after working as a DB coach), Richard's interest makes sense with the production of the Seahawks defense.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor won't be brought back    Fri Jan 6, 09:35 AM

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor won't have his option exercised by the club, and the team intends to move on from him. The team has until March 11 to exercise his $15.5 million option, which would guarantee him $30.75 million over five seasons. The offense has picked up dramatically since he took over as they were 10th and 11th in scoring the last two years after finishing 26th the year before he took over.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. With Rex Ryan fired, the Bills are moving on from his quarterback. Taylor did good things in Buffalo, and he produced with banged up assets around him in the passing game. He's got a big arm, throws a beautiful deep pass and is incredibly athletic. However, pass placement has been an issue with Taylor and he had the 3rd-highest off-target percentage (21.3 percent) of any quarterback in 2016. That being said, Taylor should have a few teams interested in giving him a shot to start.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor undergoing surgery    Thu Jan 5, 11:02 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor (groin) will undergo surgery to repair a core muscle Thursday, Jan. 5, and will require six weeks for recovery.

Footballguys view: It's interesting timing, given the decisions the team has to make. Will he be able to pass a physical before the date they need to decide about letting him go or paying him? Tons of changes are coming to Buffalo, and Taylor's status is absolutely up in the air.

Bills | Shaq Lawson prefers being a 4-3 DE    Wed Jan 4, 08:42 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Shaq Lawson said he would prefer to be a defensive end in a 4-3 defensive scheme because he played that during college but will look to improve as an outside linebacker if the new coaching staff uses a 3-4 defense alignment.

Bills | Buffalo to meet with Anthony Lynn    Wed Jan 4, 05:35 PM

Buffalo Bills interim head coach Anthony Lynn is scheduled to meet with the Bills about their head coaching position Thursday, Jan. 5, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Lynn was the interim head coach for the Bills after they fired Rex Ryan. At this time, Lynn has to be considered the front-runner for the position.

Bills | Harold Goodwin interviewing with Bills    Wed Jan 4, 08:24 AM

Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin will interview with the Buffalo Bills Saturday, Jan. 7, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Goodwin is getting some attention as a head coaching candidate again this offseason. He's been the OC for the Cardinals since 2013, but doesn't handle the play-calling duties. The Cardinals use head coach Bruce Arians for that, but in the preseason Goodwin did get three games to call the plays. Goodwin got interest last year from the Bucs before they hired Dirk Koetter.

Bills | Robert Woods to test market    Tue Jan 3, 10:42 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods told media in Buffalo he has plans to test the free-agent market this spring.

Footballguys view: Woods had a ton of upside coming out of USC as a second-round pick for the Bills in 2013. He has turned in a disappointing career so far, mostly due to injuries and inconsistencies. A change of scenery would do him some good, but don't expect the market to be white hot for his services. He'll get more of a 'prove it' deal than perhaps he wants.

Bills | Sammy Watkins opts for surgery    Tue Jan 3, 10:34 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot, hip) will have foot surgery later this week, but it is not expected to hamper his 2017 season.

Footballguys view: Originally, the plan was for Watkins to avoid surgery. Now that plan has changed. Watkins was bold and played through the injury, but he needs to get back to full strength to play at the highest level. We'll see if he can do that in 2017 and build strong chemistry with whatever quarterback the Bills are going to trot out there next season.

Bills | Sean McDermott will interview Wednesday    Tue Jan 3, 02:21 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott will interview with the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, Jan. 4, for their vacant head coaching position.

Footballguys view: McDermott has done a good job running the defense in Carolina. They weren't as good defensively in 2016 as they were in 2015, but the Panthers were below average with a secondary full of inexperienced players. They did have the 6th-best rush defense and only averaged 91.3 rushing yards allowed per game this year.

Bills | LeSean McCoy has high ankle sprain    Mon Jan 2, 06:49 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (ankle) suffered a high ankle sprain during the team's Week 17 game, according to interim head coach Anthony Lynn.

Footballguys view: The Bills are done, so McCoy will get to recover during the offseason. In 15 games, McCoy turned in the 3rd-most fantasy points for backs in standard-scoring leagues.

Bills | Frank Reich to interview with Bills    Mon Jan 2, 04:39 PM

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich is expected to interview for the Buffalo Bills' vacant head coaching position, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Reich was a backup quarterback for the Bills when Jim Kelly was lighting the league on fire. It would be fitting to see him return to Buffalo as the head coach, but right now Reich might be considered a dark horse.

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor believes he has done enough to remain starter in Buffalo, but he told reporters 'that decision is on the Bills and we'll see what the future holds.'

Footballguys view: With around $30 million in contract guarantees about to kick in, expect Taylor to be traded or released by the Bills. The team has Cardale Jones, the rookie from Ohio State, but he's just a developmental prospect. They'll be on the lookout for a new starter in 2017.

Bills | Sammy Watkins leaning against surgery    Mon Jan 2, 10:43 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (foot, hip) said he's leaning against having another surgery on his troublesome left foot.

Bills | EJ Manuel does nothing in start    Mon Jan 2, 12:40 AM
