Bills | Sammy Watkins shining in practice    Thu Aug 27, 09:46 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins has been able to beat CB Stephon Gilmore in practice on multiple occasions, and Tyler Dunne of the Buffalo News called Watkins the August MVP.

Footballguys view: We know how good Watkins is, but we also know how bad the guys throwing him the ball are. While he has the ability to be a WR1 in fantasy, his situation - poor quarterbacks, heavy run focus - leave him as a WR2.

Bills | Buffalo players out for Saturday?    Thu Aug 27, 06:19 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods (hip) is not expected to play Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to head coach Rex Ryan. The statuses of WR Percy Harvin (hip) and RBs Bryce Brown (hamstring) and Anthony Dixon (calf) are uncertain.

Bills | Sammy Watkins out Saturday    Thu Aug 27, 02:40 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (gluteus) won't play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Well, that won't exactly help EJ Manuel or anyone else. We still see Watkins as a borderline WR2/WR3 but that quarterback situation makes us feel a little ill.

Bills | EJ Manuel starting preseason game    Thu Aug 27, 01:56 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel will start the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: What's the saying: if you have three quarterbacks, you have none. Most beat writers had crossed Manuel off the list as potential starters, though perhaps that was premature. Still, head coach Rex Ryan says all three quarterbacks (Matt Cassel and Tyrod Taylor being the other two) will play with the 1s, so maybe we won't see much of Manuel. This is a mess and you should avoid the quarterback situation on this team at all costs.

Bills | Two Bills RBs return    Thu Aug 27, 12:16 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Bryce Brown (hamstring) and RB Anthony Dixon (calf) returned to practice Thursday, Aug. 27.

Footballguys view: Mostly depth backs, the Bills could find themselves in need of one or both, considering both Fred Jackson and LeSean McCoy's propensity to get banged up. Neither one is anything but a deep, deep bench warmer though and unless there is an injury, they aren't worth having on the roster.

Bills | LeSean McCoy still working on side    Thu Aug 27, 12:16 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) is doing conditioning drills on the side at practice Thursday, Aug. 27.

Footballguys view: They'll be careful with him as they cannot afford to have him injured to start the season, not with the quarterbacks they have to work with. We still think he has something left in the tank and the struggles last year were a bit of an aberration, though we're not sure how much he might struggle with a worse offensive line and offense than what he had with the Eagles. We consider him an RB1, but a shakier, lower-end one.

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods (hip) has been held out of team drills since last week due to a hip ailment.

Bills | Percy Harvin practices - sort of    Wed Aug 26, 12:30 AM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) was in uniform for the start of practice Tuesday, Aug. 25, but he was not in pads. He worked nearly the entire practice with the strength and conditioning staff. Head coach Rex Ryan said he would prefer Harvin play in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, but said it is likely Harvin won't suit up until the final exhibition game against the Detroit Lions.

Bills | Playing it safe with Sammy Watkins    Wed Aug 26, 12:29 AM

The Buffalo Bills are playing it safe with WR Sammy Watkins (glute), and he remained out of team drills Tuesday, Aug. 25. He was in full pads Tuesday, and worked with other players going through rehab. The team has played it safe with Watkins over the past two weeks, and held him out of the last preseason game due to his sore glute.

Bills | Nick O'Leary not guaranteed of spot    Wed Aug 26, 12:28 AM

Buffalo Bills TE Nick O'Leary is not guaranteed of a spot on the 53-man roster, head coach Rex Ryan said Tuesday, Aug. 25. 'I don't know,' Ryan said. 'I can tell you that is some great competition. I like the way (TE Chris Gragg) has really picked his game up, and (TE MarQueis Gray), obviously (TE Matthew Mulligan) brings you the element of being that tremendous blocker.'

Bills | Charles Clay leaves practice    Tue Aug 25, 06:29 PM

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay (knee) left practice early Tuesday, Aug. 25, with a right knee injury. Afterwards, Clay said he is fine and that he was pulled out for precautionary reasons.

Footballguys view: With all the injuries across the NFL this preseason, the Bills are wise to be careful with Clay. Unfortunately for fantasy owners, his quarterback situation is brutal and his new head coach (former Jets coach Rex Ryan) plans on running the ball a ton. That limits Clay's upside and makes him no better than a mid-range TE2.

Bills | EJ Manuel wants to stay in Buffalo    Tue Aug 25, 02:57 PM

Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said he loves being with the Bills and wants to stay with the team, despite seemingly being the third quarterback on the depth chart. Manuel has rolled well with the punches, however, saying he's taking what is given to him and just doing his best. He is also looking forward to Buffalo's third preseason game this weekend. 'I don't know how it's going to play out as far as the game yet, but for me, whatever reps I do get, I just try to take advantage of them like I did the past two weeks,' Manuel said.

Bills | Buffalo to use rotation at QB?    Tue Aug 25, 02:31 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel may each be rotated in with the starting unit Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Joe Buscaglia of WGR Sports Radio 550. All three quarterbacks have received first-team repetitions the last two practices.

Footballguys view: The Texans have already made their decision about a starting quarterback, and now it's Buffalo's turn to figure out who is the top guy. Cassel has the experience advantage, but we like Taylor out of this poor group. Taylor has incredible athleticism and a rocket arm. He needs to improve his accuracy and decision making as a passer if he wants to play up to his potential.

Bills | Percy Harvin returns to practice    Tue Aug 25, 10:18 AM

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 25, after missing two weeks with a hip injury.

Footballguys view: The Bills are looking to Harvin to provide them some big-play ability in the passing game. Now that he's back, it will be interesting to see how they use him--and how much they use him in the preseason.

Bills | Matt Cassel back in mix    Sat Aug 22, 06:02 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel was working with the first-team offense Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Rex Ryan is doing Rex Ryan things, which means you will get no clarity on this until Week 1 in all likelihood. As we have said many times, we would avoid all three of the quarterbacks vying for the job, with the winner as no more than a QB3, and a shaky one at that. Save the headaches (and the Tylenol) and avoid this.

Bills | Several key Bills return to practice    Sat Aug 22, 03:17 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) and WRs Sammy Watkins (glute), Robert Woods (hip) and Marcus Easley (knee) all returned to practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: The Bills need them on the field for Week 1 more than Preseason Week 2, but it is good to see them back in action. The Bills plan to run the ball a ton, so they'll need Jackson, though not as much as in the past. We see him as an RB4 right now, as long as LeSean McCoy stays healthy. With the mess at quarterback, Watkins sits as a low-end WR2 or a solid WR3. That's almost totally because of his ability though, so if the quarterbacks start being productive, he may end up more so as well. Easley isn't worth rostering, as he is too far down the depth chart.

Bills | Percy Harvin will play Week 1    Sat Aug 22, 02:22 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) will be ready for the regular season opener, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: We don't expect much from Harvin, who is a WR5 or WR6 at best. The Bills' quarterback position is a hot mess and even when he was on a winning team, Harvin has had issues with his teammates, so we're also not sold on him not imploding during the season. This whole offense seems like it's set to crash at the starting line.

Bills | Buffalo could keep three QBs    Sat Aug 22, 01:38 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel could all be on the Bills' final roster, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan said there is a high possibility that the Bills could keep all three quarterbacks, adding that Cassel, Taylor and Manuel would all receive playing time in their next preseason game.

Footballguys view: Unless Ryan is trolling us and he's looking to keep Matt Simms, it appears the Bills aren't totally giving up on EJ Manuel. That's not to say he'll be starting anytime soon though. And really, we'd still avoid this mess. Taylor is at least intriguing but too unproven to rely on for fantasy purposes. Matt Cassel is aggressively mediocre. And the offensive line is shaky. Despite some good weapons in the passing game, we day pass on them.

Bills | Robert Woods back to practice    Sat Aug 22, 12:22 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods (hip) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Bills here. They've had a rash of injuries on the offensive side of the ball, but it seems like some guys are getting healthier. We're not rushing out to add Woods to our fantasy lineup (even in deep leagues), but he's a talented player worth monitoring.

Bills | Sammy Watkins taking part in practice    Sat Aug 22, 12:03 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Sammy Watkins (glute) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Watkins has superstar talent, but the quarterback situation in Buffalo leaves a lot to be desired. We like him as a WR3, and fantasy owners are taking him off the board around that mark. His current ADP is WR26 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bills | All three Bills QBs seeing starter snaps    Sat Aug 22, 11:49 AM

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel have all received snaps with the first-team offense during team drills Saturday, Aug. 22. Cassel was the first quarterback in the drills.

Footballguys view: When you have three quarterbacks, you actually have none. Fantasy owners should be cheering for Taylor to win this job. His athleticism could give this offense more electricity than either Cassel or Manuel.

Bills | Fred Jackson back at practice    Sat Aug 22, 10:05 AM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: The Bills need all the help they can get at the running back position. Getting Jackson back as their top back (while LeSean McCoy is out) is nothing but a good thing. Jackson should work as McCoy's primary backup when the regular season starts.

Bills | Chris Hogan out 2-4 weeks    Fri Aug 21, 03:59 PM

Bills | Buffalo may wait on QB decision    Fri Aug 21, 03:15 PM

Buffalo Bills QBs Matt Cassel, Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel are still competing for the starting quarterback job, but head coach Rex Ryan said the team may not announce the starter until Week 1. 'This will probably play out,' Ryan said. 'Indianapolis might not know who the quarterback is until we play them. We may know, but they may not know.'

Footballguys view: Taylor was impressive enough last night to make the Bills think long and hard about starting Cassel unless he gives them some sense of security via his play next week. The blueprint of this team makes Taylor the better fit for their defense/running game-based angle of attack.

Bills | Buffalo optimistic about LeSean McCoy    Fri Aug 21, 01:42 PM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) injured his hamstring in practice earlier this week, but head coach Rex Ryan is 'cautiously optimistic' that the running back will return in time for Week 1 against the Indianapolis Colts. The team didn't reveal the results of McCoy's MRI exam, but Ryan said that McCoy's hamstring was intact and hadn't separated from the bone.

Footballguys view: The key to whether to start McCoy in his nice week 1 matchup vs the Colts is whether he practices in the week leading up to the game. Ryan's words aren't nearly as important as McCoy's actions, or lack of actions on the practice field.

Bills | Matt Cassel probably won't play    Thu Aug 20, 07:29 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel will be in uniform but is not expected to play Thursday, Aug. 20, against the Cleveland Browns, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: This is Tyrod Taylor's job to lose, though it will be interesting to see what the reps are in Week 3 when the starters get a lot of work. None of the quarterbacks here are appealing for fantasy purposes. On top of the mediocrity, this has all the hallmarks of a Rex Ryan 'run every down' offense which is death for quarterback fantasy production. Avoid this mess.

Bills | Matt Cassel has improved    Thu Aug 20, 04:54 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel has played better since the spring, mainly because of his healed foot. Cassel is primarily competing with QB Tyrod Taylor for the starting quarterback position.

Footballguys view: We know what Cassel is--a mediocre quarterback who can keep the offense going--but nothing more. We don't know what Taylor is though, and he may have more upside. Ultimately, this is an offense that is supposed to run early and often, with a so-so offensive line. Even with Sammy Watkins around, neither of these quarterbacks is worth a roster spot.

Bills | Tyrod Taylor could win starting job    Thu Aug 20, 04:00 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor has a chance to win the starting quarterback job if he plays well in the second preseason game, in the opinion of NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: We know Matt Cassel has limited upside, and EJ Manuel thus far seems to be unable to put it together. Taylor is really a mystery here, though any quarterback in Buffalo intrigues because of the upside with Sammy Watkins. With that said, even if Taylor wins the job, he's not worth a roster spot. Rex Ryan wants to run the ball a lot and the offensive line is going to be dicey at best.

Bills | Fred Jackson focused mentally    Wed Aug 19, 03:53 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) is focused on being prepared mentally while he's sidelined with a nagging hamstring injury. 'We have to just get in the playbook and know what to expect when the play is called and know what kind of looks we'll get and just be prepared mentally if we can't do it physically.' Head coach Rex Ryan hopes Jackson will be well enough in time for the Bills' third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Jackson's hamstring injury has been described as severe, so having him ready in a week or so might be a stretch. The team needs whatever help they can get at running back, and Jackson would be their best option with superstar LeSean McCoy down with his own hamstring injury.

Bills | Cierre Wood signs with Buffalo    Wed Aug 19, 10:37 AM

Free-agent RB Cierre Wood (Seahawks) signed with the Buffalo Bills Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Footballguys view: With so many running backs banged up, the Bills needed to do something at the position. Wood did not play in 2014 after being cut in camp last year by the Houston Texans. He's a camp body for the team with four running backs injured right now.

Bills | Buffalo may have interest in Ray Rice    Wed Aug 19, 08:58 AM

Free-agent RB Ray Rice (Ravens) could perk the Buffalo Bills' interest after RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) was injured, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Rice has been desperate to get back into the league, but so far nobody has expressed much interest. The Bills now are desperate for running back help with four backs injured right now. They may take a long look at Rice.

Bills | LeSean McCoy will be ready for opener    Wed Aug 19, 08:58 AM

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will be ready for Week 1, a source said after McCoy had an MRI.

Footballguys view: That's the hope for the team, but we'll have to see how reports indicate his progress during recovery. Hamstring injuries are tricky, and they can aggravate with only the slightest of missteps. This is a good piece of news for McCoy's fantasy owners, but whether or not he'll be ready is up in the air right now.

Bills | Percy Harvin update    Tue Aug 18, 09:29 PM

Updating a previous story, Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) received a platelet-rich plasma injection Tuesday, Aug. 18, according to head coach Rex Ryan. The team hopes Harvin will be able to return for the third preseason game Aug. 29 or for the finale Sept. 3.

Bills | Percy Harvin had injection    Tue Aug 18, 08:08 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Percy Harvin (hip) had an injection Tuesday, Aug. 18, and his injury is worse than originally expected, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: The Bills are a mess right now. Nearly every running back is down with an injury, including both LeSean McCoy and Fred Jackson. Now, they're dealing with this Harvin injury. Fantasy owners need to stay away from Bills skill position players until we know more about these injuries.

Bills | Fred Jackson has major hamstring injury    Tue Aug 18, 07:57 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson (hamstring) is dealing with a major hamstring injury, according to head coach Rex Ryan. Ryan hopes Jackson will be able to return for their third preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Jackson would be the player the team turns to with LeSean McCoy (hamstring) down. However, the aged veteran is dealing with his own--fairly serious--hamstring problem. We'll see if he can get healthy and help the team out as more than a few running backs are banged up in Buffalo.

Bills | LeSean McCoy will have MRI    Tue Aug 18, 07:47 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will have an MRI on the hamstring injury that caused him to leave practice Tuesday, Aug. 18. The hamstring is not off the bone, however.

Footballguys view: Terrible news for the Bills here. They already have almost all of the running backs on the roster battling some sort of ailment, and now they'll be without McCoy for a while. Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly, and this injury doesn't sound minor. We'll know more about the severity when the MRI results are revealed.

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (leg) limped off the field Tuesday, Aug. 17, as he grabbed the back of his left leg. McCoy was looked at by team trainers and went to the locker room.

Footballguys view: Uh-oh. Fantasy owners need to stay tuned here.

Bills | Karlos Williams out several weeks    Tue Aug 18, 02:24 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams (undisclosed) is dealing with an undisclosed serious injury and will miss multiple weeks.

Footballguys view: Williams was building momentum towards a bigger role and maybe even the no2 RB role sooner than later. That was brought to a halt by this development, but he should still make the team based on what he showed before the illness and surgery.

Bills | Ricky Seale signs with Buffalo    Tue Aug 18, 10:51 AM

Undrafted free-agent RB Ricky Seale (Stanford) signed with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Bills | EJ Manuel appears out of race    Tue Aug 18, 08:42 AM

Updating previous reports, Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel appears to be out of the competition for starting quarterback with QB Matt Cassel and QB Tyrod Taylor. Cassel has shown good decision-making and command on offense. Taylor has had some accuracy issues.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Manuel's roster spot is not safe even though he was a first-round pick only two years ago. Cassel has the experience advantage, and he could win the starting job because of it. Taylor has a rocket arm and crazy athleticism, but he's not accurate as a passer.

Bills | Robert Woods solid in practice    Mon Aug 17, 06:55 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods caught five passes for 115 yards and one touchdown during a joint practice with the Cleveland Browns Monday, Aug. 17.

Bills | Robert Woods showing consistency    Mon Aug 17, 05:47 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Robert Woods has been one of the most consistent players for the Bills during training camp.

Footballguys view: Good news for the third-year receiver here. The bad news is that he's on a run-heavy team and the QB situation in Buffalo is among the worst in the league. Woods is not getting selected in most drafts, but keep him on your waiver-wire speed dial in deeper leagues.
