Rams | Sam Bradford working with rookie WRs Thu May 23, 09:03 PM
St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford has been working on routes and throws with WRs Tavon Austin and Stedman Bailey during offseason workouts.
| Footballguys view: Austin and Bailey were teammates in college at West Virginia and combined for 1,607 yards after the catch in 2012. Austin should be the focal point of the passing game and reminds many of Randall Cobb (Packers) because of his speed and elusiveness. Bailey is a deep target who can track the ball easily on long passes. |

Redskins | Robert Griffin says he needs to be more careful Thu May 23, 02:19 PM
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) said he likely will be more careful when he returns from his knee injury because he wants to be out there for his teammates. 'I can't change my mind-set,' Griffin said, 'but I can be smarter about what I do out there. ... It's about limiting those hits, making sure I'm out there for my teammates. ... I understand I have to be more careful when it comes to that.'

Redskins | Robert Griffin says knee feels great Thu May 23, 02:10 PM
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) said his surgically repaired knee is feeling great and that he hopes to be ready for the start of training camp. He said he will begin explosive sprinting in a few weeks and will begin making cuts a few weeks after that. Griffin did do some running and throwing without hesitation during organized team activities Thursday, May 23.
| Footballguys view: We've heard nothing but positive things about Griffin's recovery to this point. He's on track to be ready for the start of the regular season. However, the team may decide to limit his reps in training camp. |

Jets | Players not backing Mark Sanchez? Thu May 23, 01:33 PM
An anonymous New York Jets player said that the team is skeptical about QB Mark Sanchez and his ability to be successful. 'Everyone on the team likes Mark personally, but there's a general feeling among some of the players that maybe it's time to give someone else a chance.' The player said 80 to 90 percent of the roster agrees with that statement. Sanchez is still trying to figure out the team's new West Coast offense.
| Footballguys view: This if far from a vote of confidence for Sanchez. He's struggled in minicamp and may not be able to hold off rookie Geno Smith (West Virginia) for the starting job. |

Redskins | Dad thinks Robert Griffin should throw more Thu May 23, 12:24 PM
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III's (knee) dad thinks the team should devise more plays this year that has his son throwing more and running less. 'I just know that based on what I know Robert can do, he doesn't have to be a runner as much as I saw last year,' Griffin Jr. said. 'To me, you're paying these (receivers) a lot of money to catch the football. I'm his dad -- I want him throwing that football, a lot. A lot.' Griffin is hoping he can recover from torn ligaments in his right knee in time to play in Week 1. He ran the ball 120 times for 815 yards last season.
| Footballguys view: Griffin's athleticism will always be a part of his game. We're expecting the Redskins to keep Griffin safer in the design of the offense. Quicker passes, rollouts away from pressure, and making sure Griffin slides when he scrambles should help keep the young QB healthy in 2013. |

Redskins | Robert Griffin III dropping back Thu May 23, 11:14 AM
Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III (knee) has been dropping back and throwing for about 20 minutes in workouts Thursday, May 23.

Raiders | Matt Flynn restructures Thu May 23, 11:02 AM
The Oakland Raiders restructured QB Matt Flynn's contract and converted much of his $3.25 million base salary into a signing bonus. The move saved the team about $1 million against the salary cap.
| Footballguys view: The Raiders are moving some money around since they signed CB Charles Woodson in free agency and they need to sign their draft picks. They will get additional cap relief when Michael Huff's contract clears on June 1st. |

Browns | One signed, one cut Thu May 23, 09:18 AM
The Cleveland Browns signed free-agent WR Tori Gurley (Ravens) and waived QB Thaddeus Lewis.

New York Giants WRs Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks were missing at organized team activities Wednesday, May 22, over contract disputes, so QB Eli Manning was working with WRs Jerrel Jernigan, Louis Murphy and Rueben Randle during the session.

Eagles | Michael Vick will have to change in new offense Wed May 22, 06:58 PM
Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick, who held onto the ball for an average of 3.07 seconds last year, will likely have to change in order to be successful in head coach Chip Kelly's new offense. Kelly, while at Oregon, preached that his quarterbacks were urged to get the ball out of their hands in 1.5 seconds. 'I think there is a lot more to Michael,' Kelly said back in February. 'I think quarterbacks are a byproduct of their experience. But to sit here and say I understood the system that Michael's been in whether he's with the Falcons under Coach (Dan) Reeves or here, that depends on the system that you run. Some of the systems that they run they don't ask him to get the ball out quick. Do I think he can get the ball out quick? I think he's got an unbelievable release. It's up and out and it's quick.'
| Footballguys view: Vick is athletic and that should be featured in the Kelly inside zone read offense. However, Kelly's QBs need to get rid of the ball quickly to keep a defense on their toes and keep the high powered offense churning. We'll see if Vick can change this part of his game and lead the offense in 2013. |

Jets | Coach unhappy with Mark Sanchez's OTA performance Wed May 22, 06:02 PM
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he was disappointed with QB Mark Sanchez after he threw three interceptions during organized team activities Wednesday, May 22. 'Yeah, it is. Absolutely. It's a good thing defense makes the plays, but no, I'd rather him not turn the ball over once,' Ryan said. 'He did a lot of great things, and then those negative things, at the end of the day, that's what gets you beat. And so we got to do a better job of eliminating those turnovers.'
| Footballguys view: We've been down the road with Sanchez before. He's the Stuart Smalley of NFL QBs and the Jets are spinning their wheels dealing with him. We'll see if he can beat out rookie Geno Smith for the starting job in training camp. Early reports don't show him making the most of his opportunity. |

NFL | Arena Football team serious about interest in Tim Tebow Wed May 22, 05:36 PM
Ron Jaworski, part owner of the Philadelphia Soul of the Arena Football League, said he is serious about his interest in signing free-agent QB Tim Tebow (Jets) to his team. Jaworski said he reached out to Tebow the day after he was released but has not heard from Tebow at this time. Jaworski thinks arena football would help Tebow because he would have to get rid of the football quickly and process information quickly.
| Footballguys view: The Soul are interested in Tebow...as a backup. They already have Dan Raudabaugh entrenched as the starter. |
Bills | OC says EJ Manuel has to work on things Wed May 22, 04:30 PM
Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett said QB EJ Manuel needs to work on all parts of his game to become a better quarterback. 'He's a young man that's got to work on a lot of things from footwork to progressions to plays to formations, everything. Defenses in the NFL are obviously a little different. He's got to work on that too. He's got to work on everything,' Hackett said.
| Footballguys view: Manuel is far from a polished QB and the Bills knew that when they selected him in the first-round of the 2013 NFL draft. However, he has arguably the highest upside of any QB in this class and is an exciting player who just sleeps, eats, and breathes football. Manuel is competing with veteran Kevin Kolb to be the starter in 2013. |
Jets | Mark Sanchez, Geno Smith struggle Wed May 22, 03:25 PM
New York Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith both struggled during organized team activities Wednesday, May 22, with Sanchez completing only six of his 11 passes, including three interceptions. Sanchez worked with the first-team unit, although he and Smith received basically the same number of snaps. Smith completed only three of 10 passes with an interception.
| Footballguys view: This is not a good sign. The two are competing for the starting QB spot in a battle that should last through training camp. |

Jets | Geno Smith hires new agency Wed May 22, 03:02 PM
New York Jets QB Geno Smith has hired Roc Nation Sports, Jay-Z's new sports agency, as his new representation. Smith has yet to sign a deal with the Jets.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger happy with offensive changes Wed May 22, 02:30 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has voiced his happiness over the direction of the team's new offense this offseason. 'There've been some changes this offseason in some of the offensive philosophies, playbook and some things that I think are good,' Roethlisberger said. 'It's some compromise from all the different position coaches, the running back coaches, the line and quarterback coaches. I think we've taken a little bit of everything and made it a lot better.'
| Footballguys view: We'll see if year two in the Todd Haley offense is better for Roethlisberger and the Steelers. The team needs to feature more downfield passing which is not a Haley specialty but plays to the strength of their QB. |

Titans | Jake Locker ready to throw Wed May 22, 02:11 PM
Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (shoulder) will be ready to throw without limitations during organized team activities that start next week. He underwent surgery around 20 weeks ago to fix his non-throwing shoulder that popped out of join multiple times last year. The team will be installing a run-first offense this year under offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. 'He plays sometimes with a linebacker mentality, and I know it's sometimes for the effect. He wants his teammates to see how tough he is, but he needs to learn to take care of himself. You know his speed and the ability to run and throw on the run is something we want to take advantage of,' Loggains said.
| Footballguys view: Good news for Locker and the Titans here. It's a make or break season for him and he has to stay healthy and prove that he can be the franchise QB the team envisioned when they selected him in the first-round of the 2011 NFL draft. |
Bengals | Andy Dalton working on deep throws Wed May 22, 12:47 PM
Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has, during organized team activities, been focusing on improving the trajectory and accuracy of his throws while working with quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese. Dalton also is practicing a quicker dropback in the pocket. The club is hoping first-round TE Tyler Eifert will help stretch the offense so defensive attention doesn't squarely target WR A.J. Green.
| Footballguys view: Many have questioned Dalton's arm strength since he came into the league. He's made improvements there in terms of length of passes but needs to improve his deep accuracy. |
Texans | Case Keenum could be No. 2 Wed May 22, 08:39 AM
Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak said QB Case Keenum could unseat QB T.J. Yates for the backup quarterback spot.
| Footballguys view: Keenum has always been an intelligent passer but many questioned his size and arm strength coming out of college. Yates has looked decent when forced into the starting lineup but is now facing competition from Keenum. |
49ers | Trio worked together in offseason Tue May 21, 09:08 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and WRs A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette lived together for two months in Atlanta during the offseason, working together at a nearby training facility. And since the opening of the team's offseason program, WR Anquan Boldin has served as a mentor, helping the two receivers on route running after practice.
| Footballguys view: Jenkins was the team's first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. He's competing with Quinton Patton and Mario Manningham to be the team's WR3. Lockette is an incredibly fast player who can be a reserve receiver and help on special teams. |

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) said he didn't know about the cyst on his back when he signed a six-year, $108 million extension in March. Romo said he didn't have any pain in his back until mid-April.
| Footballguys view: Romo should be ready for training camp, and could even participate during minicamp in June. He feels fully healed after having surgery to remove his cyst. |

Patriots | Danny Amendola gets on same page with Tom Brady Tue May 21, 02:49 PM
New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is working on getting on the same page with QB Tom Brady. The two worked out together earlier in the offseason in California and are now taking part in organized team activities. 'I said it today; he darted me in the chest with one ball, and inside my head I was like, 'Wow, this guy can really wing it,'' Amendola said after Tuesday's practice. 'That's why he's Tom Brady.'
| Footballguys view: The chemistry between Amendola and Brady should build quickly. Amendola is set to play the Wes Welker (Broncos) role in the offense this year. The two players have a similar skill set and in fact it was Amendola who followed Welker at Texas Tech. If he can stay healthy for a full season then Amendola should catch over 100 passes in the Patriots' high octane offense. |

Seahawks | Josh Portis released Tue May 21, 02:47 PM
The Seattle Seahawks released QB Josh Portis Tuesday, May 21, following his arrest for driving under the influence earlier this month.
| Footballguys view: Portis was battling for a spot on the depth chart as the team's third QB. With his release it increases the chances that Jerrod Johnson could make the final roster. |
Dolphins | Ryan Tannehill strong in practice Tue May 21, 02:26 PM
Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill was sharp during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21. Tannehill had big passes to WRs Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace. TE Dustin Keller was impressed with Tannehill's first practice. "You would think a guy who used to play wide receiver the best thing he does is run the ball," Keller said. "But he puts the ball right on the money and he's a good decision maker, as well."
| Footballguys view: The Dolphins have been searching for a real franchise QB ever since Dan Marino retired. That's what they have in second-year QB Tannehill. With the improved weapons around him (Dustin Keller, Mike Wallace) we could see Tannehill take a sizable jump in production this season. |

Jets | Could name starting QB soon Tue May 21, 02:03 PM
New York Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job this offseason, but the quarterback competition could be settled well before the team even heads to training camp in July. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg wants one of the two QBs to separate himself from the other, and if that happens this week, the team isn't against naming their starter early. 'Common sense tells you that you hope it's quick, but this is going to be a full blown competition. Period,' Mornhinweg said.
| Footballguys view: There will be a starter entering training camp but that doesn't mean that will stay the same once the regular season starts. Rookie Geno Smith is looking to prove doubters wrong and it wouldn't surprise us if he beats out Mark Sanchez for the starting job. |

Broncos | Peyton Manning has connection with Wes Welker Tue May 21, 12:36 PM
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning already feels like he has some chemistry with WR Wes Welker. 'There's certain guys you just feel like you have timing with right away,' Manning said. 'He's a guy that has a great feel for how to get open, and understands route concepts and, of course, he played in such a sophisticated offense there in New England, so he's a smart player.' The Broncos used three-receiver sets 64 percent of the time last year, but expect that to increase dramatically as they look to create mismatches in the opposing defenses.
| Footballguys view: Welker was impressive on day one of Broncos OTAs. He still has ankle breaking moves and can get open with ease. He may not catch over 110 passes in Denver but if Welker caught 90 in 2013 we wouldn't be surprised. |

Broncos | Wes Welker doesn't expect to carry load Tue May 21, 12:28 PM
Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker knows that with WRs Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker in the picture on his new team, he won't be averaging 112 catches in 2013 like he did in his career with the New England Patriots. 'If I have to catch 112 balls, that probably means we're in trouble,' Welker said. During organized team activities Monday, May 20, QB Peyton Manning showed excellent chemistry with Thomas and Decker, but he also involved Welker some. Welker is on board with having a smaller workload, but Manning knows the benefit of adding Welker to the offense. 'He's just been an extremely difficult guy to cover one-on-one, and then you can tell by watching him on film -- he's an extremely smart player,' Manning said. 'He has an excellent feel for zone coverage. This is just the beginning stages of him getting comfortable in this offense, and he and I getting on the same page.'
| Footballguys view: Welker gives the Broncos yet another weapon in the passing game. He will be used on underneath routes and jerk routes to help move the chains. Demaryius Thomas should still be the top target with Eric Decker a strong red zone target. |

Browns | Norv Turner downplays Brian Hoyer signing Tue May 21, 12:23 PM
Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner has downplayed the team's signing of QB Brian Hoyer, and Turner also has praised QB Brandon Weeden for his relentless work ethic. 'I think there have been more stories written about Brian Hoyer being a Brown over the last four months than probably any player in history,' Turner said. 'He was released. He was available. He's a guy that has been with some good teams in backup situations. He's played very little football, but I do think we like his skill set.'
| Footballguys view: Hoyer is a nice backup quarterback but he is a longshot to win the starting job this year. Weeden has to earn the confidence of the front office and has gotten off to a good start in minicamp. |

Cowboys | Tony Romo will be ready Tue May 21, 12:12 PM
Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) said he will be ready for training camp in July after having minor surgery to remove a cyst on his back that will keep him out of organized team activities for the next three weeks. 'If this was the regular season and I had to play next week, I could,' Romo said. 'This is just about being smart. That's why I did it now. This will have no effect on training camp. No way will it have an impact. And I still think there's a good chance I'm on the field for minicamp.' The team does not fear that this will be a long-term injury, but they'll be cautious with him. Romo said the cyst was causing a constant ache in his back. QB Kyle Orton will work with the first-team offense with Romo out.
| Footballguys view: Romo should be good to go for camp and the team will monitor his progress as he comes back from this surgery. He may have more control in the passing game and the team added help in the WR corps. Romo's current ADP is QB12 and he's coming off the board at the beginning of round eight. |

'He threw a couple of balls today, things that we talked about over the offseason that he'd like to take a shot at, and he did it today just to see what would happen with full awareness of why he was doing it,' Carroll said.
| Footballguys view: Nothing but good news here. Wilson has improved weapons around him this year as the team traded for star WR Percy Harvin. That makes the Seahawks passing game even more deadly and should help Wilson avoid the sophomore slump. |

Broncos | Peyton Manning praises Charles Woodson Mon May 20, 07:48 PM
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning praised free-agent CB Charles Woodson, saying he would like to have him join the team. "We're always looking to add great players," Manning said. "That has been pretty evident since the time I've been here that management is always looking to add excellent football players through the draft or via free agency. I had a chance to visit with Charles when he was here last week and certainly, that'd be a great addition to our team. I know there is the business side of it that comes into play, but there's no question that any time you can add good football players at any position, I think that's always a good thing."

Broncos | Wes Welker making an impact Mon May 20, 07:08 PM
Denver Broncos WR Wes Welker is already making an impression on the Denver Broncos as he is trying to get on the same page with QB Peyton Manning. "I thought we had excellent production last year at the slot out of [WR] Brandon Stokley and adding Wes as a new player--we're looking forward to getting on the same page."
| Footballguys view: Welker looked good at OTAs today according to our very own Cecil Lammey. We'll see the Broncos use 11 personnel (3WR) as their base set in order to get Welker, Demaryius Thomas, and Eric Decker on the field at the same time. He may not catch over 110 passes this year but we wouldn't be surprised to see him catch around 90 on the season. |

But it's really too premature to speculate on where his medical condition is until we give him a physical when training camp starts July 25,' Allen said.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano cleared things up by saying that QB Josh Freeman is the team's starting quarterback Monday, May 20. Schiano said that QB Mike Glennon could 'play quickly' if necessary Sunday, May 19.
| Footballguys view: Of course Freeman is the starter. Glennon has a strong arm but needs serious work on his mechanics, accuracy, and footwork. It would take a huge collapse from Freeman in order for Glennon to play in 2013. |

| Footballguys view: Foles is competing with Vick to be the team's starter in 2013. Vick is the better runner and may be the better fit for Chip Kelly's system. Foles could be the better passer if he works on the accuracy and decision making issues he had at times last year. |

Bills | EJ Manuel likes new offense Mon May 20, 01:14 PM
Buffalo Bills QB EJ Manuel said it has been easy to pick up the team's offense, which he said is less complicated than the system he learned at Florida State. 'The funny thing is it's easier to learn than the offense I had at Florida State,' he said. 'It's a true West Coast-type progression offense. That's really what I wanted when I was coming through the pre-draft process. I wanted something that I could just go in and say 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, check it down and run it. That's it, it's that simple. I love it.' Manuel has spent extensive time working with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
| Footballguys view: Manuel fits the design of the Marrone offense perfectly. It's an aggressive design featuring downfield passing and some option plays for an athletic quarterback. Manuel is competing with Kevin Kolb to be the team's starter this year. |

Broncos | Gain cap space Mon May 20, 12:44 PM
The Denver Broncos gained some salary cap flexibility over the next two seasons after they made some changes to QB Peyton Manning's contract late last week. The team insured themselves against have to pay Manning's $20 million salary in 2014 in the event that he won't be able to play because of a non-neck injury that might be suffered in 2013. Under the new deal, Manning will receive a $10 million salary advance in exchange for his base salaries in 2013 and 2014 being lowered to $15 million each year. The $10 million advance will be treated like a signing bonus and will be prorated over four seasons. As a result, Manning's cap number will be lowered by $2.5 million in both 2013 and 2014, but then rises by $2.5 million in 2015 and 2016.

Cardinals | Coach high on Carson Palmer Sun May 19, 04:37 PM
Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he likes the deep pass QB Carson Palmer will be able to bring to the team. 'He's tough as nails. As good a deep-ball thrower as I've ever seen. I mean really accurate on the deep ball. He still has it. What he did last year with the [Oakland Raiders], in a crazy situation, I thought was very, very impressive,' Arians said.
| Footballguys view: Arians loves QBs who can play in his vertical offense. Palmer isn't the same player he used to be but still has a strong arm to stretch the field. Questions abound about the Cardinals O-Line and whether they'll be able to protect Palmer adequately while the downfield routes develop. |
