Rams | Tre Mason not practicing    Tue Sep 1, 03:29 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason (hamstring) is not practicing Tuesday, Sept. 1, with a strained hamstring.

Footballguys view: Todd Gurley is lurking and that has hampered Mason's value, limiting him to an RB5/RB6. Gurley is a solid RB3 (with RB1 uspide) when he is at full strength.

Rams | Tre Mason suffers injury    Sun Aug 30, 10:59 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason (hamstring) suffered a mild hamstring strain during the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29. He is not expected to play in the final preseason game.

Footballguys view: Matt Waldman favorite Malcolm Brown could make the team and even see significant action Week 1 against Seattle if Mason doesn't heal quickly or suffers a setback. This is Mason's second hamstring issue so far this year, so "mild" might be a relative term. Deep dynasty leaguers should take notice.

Rams | Rodger Saffold could miss preseason game    Wed Aug 26, 07:40 PM

Rams | Todd Gurley completes first practice    Tue Aug 25, 11:26 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) made it through his first team drills in practice Tuesday, Aug. 25, and he worked on occasion with the first-team offense.

Footballguys view: Good news for his fantasy GMs, but the Rams are being cautious with him and have Tre Mason there as well. We mostly see Gurley as a low-end RB2 or a very good RB3. Mason is lower down the pecking order, sitting as an RB4.

Rams | Brian Quick will play Saturday    Tue Aug 25, 07:51 PM

St. Louis Rams WR Brian Quick (shoulder) will play Saturday, Aug. 29, versus the Indianapolis Colts after fully practicing Tuesday, Aug. 25, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Things turn around quickly in the NFL. Quick suffered a major shoulder injury last year, and he's been working diligently to recover. It will be interesting to see what he looks like in his preseason debut. When healthy, Quick will start on the outside opposite Kenny Britt.

Rams | Brian Quick cleared for contact    Mon Aug 24, 10:30 PM

St. Louis Rams WR Brian Quick (shoulder) has been cleared to practice with contact this week, and he might even be able to play in the team's next preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, against the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Good news for Quick as he's been working hard to recovery from this serious shoulder problem he suffered about halfway through last year. He's in a contract year, and when healthy should start on the outside opposite Kenny Britt.

Rams | Todd Gurley to sit out preseason    Mon Aug 24, 06:48 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) will still sit out the entire preseason even though he has been cleared to practice, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Not a total surprise here. The Rams spent a premium pick on Gurley--and for good reason. The kid has superstar upside, and he's got the potential to be the best running back in the game--when healthy. Tre Mason should open the season as the starter, and Gurley will be worked into the mix as the season rolls on.

Rams | Todd Gurley cleared to practice    Mon Aug 24, 06:09 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) has been cleared to participate in practice, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: We can't wait to see what a healthy Gurley can do at the pro level. He's got superstar written all over him, and Gurley could take the league by storm when at full strength. He'll get worked in this season, but he might be closer to full strength in 2016.

Rams | Todd Gurley to be eased in?    Sat Aug 22, 02:10 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is expected to be brought along slowly to start the regular season, according to ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner.

Footballguys view: It makes sense since, at least early on, Gurley would be on the PUP list. We aren't sure what the split between he and Tre Mason will be, which limits them both. Right now we'd feel better with Mason as an RB3, while Gurley sits as an RB4 but with a ton of upside.

Rams | Todd Gurley still on solo drills    Tue Aug 18, 09:09 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) remains on individual drills Tuesday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: We'll see Gurley limited as he comes back from the knee injury that ended his season last year in college at Georgia. He's a superstar when healthy, so expect the Rams to proceed with caution.

Rams | E.J. Gaines out for season    Sun Aug 16, 09:10 AM

St. Louis Rams CB E.J. Gaines (foot) has been ruled out for the season following Lisfranc surgery on his foot Saturday, Aug. 15, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Footballguys view: Gaines was one of the team's top four corners and he was competing for a starting role. The strength of the Rams defense is their defensive line, so this isn't a crucial piece, but it leaves the Rams in a tough spot if they suffer any more cornerback injuries.

Rams | Todd Gurley expected to miss games    Wed Aug 12, 04:14 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is expected to miss a few regular season games, because the team will not use him until he is 100% healthy. Gurley's anterior cruciate ligament in stable, but the area around the ligament is not strong enough.

Footballguys view: We'd prefer to see Gurley out of action for the entire preseason. The Rams don't want to mess up his recovery by pushing him too hard early on. Start the season with Tre Mason as your starter, then slowly start moving Gurley into action. Gurley has the upside to be the best back in football someday.

Rams | Nick Foles comfortable in St. Louis    Wed Aug 12, 03:53 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles is comfortable with his new team in part because they are running a west coast offense, which he has used in the past. He is showing good chemistry with his new teammates.

Footballguys view: A comfortable Foles is a better quarterback. We'll see if that high comfort level pays off with quality play in the regular season. The Philadelphia system covered up a lot of flaws with Foles. It will be interesting to see if he can flourish in a more traditional system.

Rams | Tre Mason's stock rising?    Tue Aug 11, 07:52 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason seems more and more likely to open the 2015 season as the unrivalled starter in the backfield for the regular-season opener Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Seattle Seahawks. RB Todd Gurley (knee) said Tuesday, Aug. 11, he doesn't know if he'll be cleared in time.

Footballguys view: No big surprise here. Mason is talented, but the clock is ticking on his time in the starting lineup. While Mason is good, Gurley has the upside to be the best back in the game--when healthy. Gurley is coming back from the knee injury that cut his final season short last year at Georgia. The team wisely is bringing him along slowly as he returns. He may begin the season as a backup, but Gurley could end up being a stud for fantasy owners at the end of the season (fantasy playoffs).

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) admitted Tuesday, Aug. 11, he doesn't know if he will be cleared in time for the regular-season opener Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Head coach Jeff Fisher declined to provide a specific timetable for Gurley's debut, or preseason availability.

Rams | Todd Gurley doing individual drills    Mon Aug 10, 08:13 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is doing some jogging at training camp Monday, Aug. 10, and looks normal. Gurley must now focus on strengthening his quadriceps muscles and all the muscles around his knee as the season approaches. It's still unclear if he'll be able to start the regular season on the field.

Footballguys view: We're likely to see the Rams ease Gurley into action this year. They selected him with a top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft with the idea that he could be the bellcow back (and a superstar) when healthy. Gurley is currently coming back from the knee injury that he suffered last year at Georgia. He has the natural talent to eventually be the best back in the NFL. This year, Gurley may split time with Tre Mason for most of the season as he gets back to form.

Rams | Todd Gurley to be part of committee?    Sat Aug 8, 09:18 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley and RB Tre Mason will be part of a rotation this season, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. 'Our intention is to have a rotation,' Fisher said. 'Even if Todd is 100%, I still want to have the rotation with Tre, because Tre is special. I think that one-two combination is going to be great.'

Footballguys view: Gurley has the natural ability to be one of the league's best running backs...if healthy. The team should wisely bring him along slowly as he's not even a year from the knee injury that knocked him out of his final season in college at Georgia. With Tre Mason on the roster, the Rams could ease Gurley into action by using a RBBC. One day, Gurley could take over as the primary ball-carrier and be an impact player.

Rams | Nick Foles signs extension    Fri Aug 7, 08:13 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles signed a two-year extension with the team Friday, Aug. 7. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: It's still somewhat baffling that the Philadelphia Eagles dumped Foles for a never healthy Sam Bradford, but it's Chip Kelly's world, we're just living in it. Unfortunately for Foles, this is not a great situation to land in and we don't see him having a positive fantasy impact this year.

Rams | Todd Gurley unlikely for preseason    Fri Aug 7, 02:00 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is coming along slowly from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, and head coach Jeff Fisher said it's unlikely that Gurley plays in the preseason. Fisher said Gurley already has a grasp of the offense and has praised him for his talent. Fisher expects Gurley and RB Tre Mason to rotate in the regular season.

Footballguys view: This isn't going to make you more likely to draft him. In dynasty, Gurley is still ticketed for big big things. His talent could be overwhelming once he is unleashed and change the Rams plans, but in redraft it looks like Gurley's impact will be delayed and his full arrival date is unknown. He's a boom/bust RB2 pick in the 4th or 5th.

Rams | Tre Mason held out    Fri Aug 7, 09:20 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason (hamstring) was held out of practice with a tight hamstring Thursday, Aug. 6.

St. Louis Rams CB E.J. Gaines (leg) left training camp with an apparent leg injury, limping off the field early in the workout and not returning Sunday, Aug. 2. 'We don't know (yet),' head coach Jeff Fisher said. 'We're going to have to do some tests. He got stepped on, which is encouraging as opposed to the other things. So we'll do some tests. Right now, they are not too concerned. He's very sore but that typically can happen when you get stepped on.'

Rams | Todd Gurley will be limited    Thu Jul 30, 07:53 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) will be limited to individual drills when training camp starts as he continues to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Gurley is recovering from an ACL injury suffered last year at Georgia, and he might begin the season as a backup behind Tre Mason. Gurley has incredible talent, and he should take over as the starter when fully healthy.

Rams | Todd Gurley may be ready for Week 1    Wed Jul 29, 12:13 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) could have a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season since he does not have to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: That's great news for the Rams. Gurley could end up being one of the best running backs in the game today. The Rams should ease him back into the lineup as a reserve behind Tre Mason. At some point, Gurley should take over as the lead back.

Rams | Todd Gurley passes conditioning test    Tue Jul 28, 03:10 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) passed his conditioning test Tuesday, July 24. He will start training camp on the active roster.

Footballguys view: The rookie from Georgia has the potential to be one of the best in the game. Gurley may be eased into action at the start of the regular season, and he may begin the year as a backup behind Tre Mason. We expect at some point this year, Gurley will be able to take over as the featured back.

Rams | Tre Mason to have first shot at starting?    Thu Jul 23, 06:49 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason will get first crack at the starting running back position until rookie RB Todd Gurley (knee) is healthy enough to start.

Footballguys view: Of course Mason is going to get the first shot to start...especially after what he did last year as a rookie. Mason is a talented runner who can get skinny between the tackles, plus he's got good burst in the open field. He is not as powerful or fast as Gurley (when healthy), but Mason is a quality starter. The second-year back is a RB3 with RB2 upside while Gurley is eased into action.

Rams | Todd Gurley to open camp on NFI    Tue Jul 21, 11:13 AM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is expected to be placed on the Non-Football Injury list when training camp opens. This was the team's plan, and he can be removed from it at any time.

Footballguys view: This move was expected for the rookie first-round pick. Gurley is incredibly talented and can be a top-5 fantasy running back when healthy and playing up to his potential. He's still recovering from a knee injury he suffered last year at Georgia, so the Rams are going to ease him back into action as we draw closer to the regular season.

Rams | Brian Quick making progress    Sat Jul 11, 11:28 AM

St. Louis Rams WR Brian Quick (shoulder) is making good progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery and was able to participate in individual drills during offseason workouts. Quick may be able to participate in team drills at some point during training camp and could be ready for Week 1 if he does not suffer any setbacks.

Footballguys view: Quick had a more serious shoulder injury than most, which is part of the reason the team re-signed Kenny Britt. While his long-term outlook is still sunny, the Rams offensive line and passing game might not support Quick being more than a bye/injury/emergency option this year.

Rams | Nick Foles could be extended    Thu Jul 9, 09:23 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles could receive a contract extension that would likely be in the range of a four-year deal with average of somewhere between $12 million and $14 million per season with about $20 million in guarantees.

Footballguys view: 15 million a year seems like the rate for an adequate to decent starting QB, which is what Foles is striving to prove he is in St. Louis this year. 12 to 14 million would be a slight discount with the salary cap about to go up again.

Rams | Select Isaiah Battle in supplemental draft    Thu Jul 9, 02:00 PM

Clemson OT Isaiah Battle was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth-round of the NFL supplemental draft Thursday, July 9.

Footballguys view: Battle is a project with the length and movement skills to be a left tackle in the NFL. He has to develop more strength and consistency and there are also character concerns about Battle, but his upside and body type are worth giving a shot. The Rams have some serious offensive line woes, but at least they have devoted five draft picks to the unit this year.

Rams | Nick Foles instilling confidence    Wed Jul 1, 08:09 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles' command of the huddle is something that has been missing from the quarterback position in recent years, according to TE Jared Cook. 'Hopefully, he can make all of us better,' Cook said. 'This is something we've needed the past few years -- somebody to fill the mold, step in, grab the ram by the horns and say, 'Let's go, guys! This is our time!''

Footballguys view: Foles is certainly an upgrade from the likes of Austin Davis and Kellen Clemens, but with a questionable offensive line and WR/TE group that lacks star power, this team is still going to be run-heavy when they are successful at controlling the game and inconsistent when they are not. Foles has a ton of motivation playing for a long-term extension or free agent value depending on the Rams approach to his future, but there probably isn't any fantasy profit to be had here.

Rams | Todd Gurley to meet with doctor    Fri Jun 26, 03:14 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) said he is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews in a few weeks to have his surgically repaired knee examined.

Footballguys view: There are some who believe Gurley could be ready for the start of training camp....or at least ready to do some light work at that time. Some feel Gurley may not be ready at the start of the regular season. Either way, we know the Rams are going to be cautious with Gurley. He's got superstar potential and should be an impact player when healthy.

Rams | Todd Gurley likely for training camp?    Wed Jun 24, 08:00 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is eyeing next month's training camp as a return to the field. 'That is definitely a goal that I'm shooting for,' Gurley told NFL Media's Tiffany Blackmon from the NFL Rookie Symposium Wednesday, June 24, 'Just to be able to get out there and do at least some individual stuff. It's looking pretty realistic. This month I'll be in St. Louis rehabbing, so hopefully I can aim for (training camp).'

Footballguys view: This would be huge news for the Rams, who took some criticism for using their first pick on a guy who could be on the PUP list when September rolls around. Gurley was the top back in the draft without a doubt, but the injury concern was a big one for some teams. That could be a moot point come late July. Gurley has the potential to be a special running back even behind a mediocre offensive line. We see him as a low end RB2 or a high end RB3 with potential to be much more.

Rams | RB Mason has slimmed down    Mon Jun 22, 09:10 PM

Joe Lyons, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports that St. Louis Rams second-year running back Tre Mason has lost weight this offseason. He's down to between 195 and 200 pounds in an effort to help improve his speed. Mason will spend the next month or so working alongside cornerback and teammate Janoris Jenkins with trainer Tony Villiani at XPE Sports in Florida.

Footballguys view: The Rams selected potential superstar running back Todd Gurley in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft--even after Mason turned in a solid rookie season in 2014. Mason should begin the season as the starter as Gurley has yet to practice this offseason as he continues to rehab the knee injury he suffered last year in college at Georgia. Once Gurley is healthy, expect the Rams to ease himi into the lineup and start chipping away at Mason's touches.

Rams | Only first 2 years of Gurley's contract guaranteed    Sun Jun 21, 08:46 PM

Ben Volin, from the Boston Globe, reports that only the first two years of St. Louis Rams rookie RB Todd Gurley's contract are guaranteed. If the Rams cut him because of his preexisting knee injury, then the final two years of his contract are void. That's an unusually structured deal given that Gurley was a premium pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Footballguys view: The Rams had to protect themselves due to Gurley's knee injury, and that's what they did with this contract. Gurley has superstar potential if healthy, and he's betting on himself by signing this deal. He could start the season on the PUP list, and the Rams may have to start Tre Mason at the beginning of the year. When healthy, Gurley could be eased into the starting role. His ADP of RB24 (5.05) in 12-team PPR leagues seems a bit optimistic for a player who has yet to practice this offseason. We LOVE Gurley, but proceed with caution until we know more about his injury status.

Free-agent CB Aaron Ross (Ravens) worked out for the St. Louis Rams last week, according to a source.

Rams | OC impressed with Tavon Austin    Sat Jun 20, 10:59 AM

St. Louis Rams WR Tavon Austin was impressive during the offseason workouts, according to offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti. 'Tavon Austin's had a great offseason,' Cignetti said. 'It starts in the classroom. He's learning. He's paying attention. He's bringing it to the practice field. You just see it from his route running. What a difference. His effort, his attention to details. Every day out there, the guy's made plays.'

Footballguys view: Austin is super quick and difficult to tackle in the open field, but he's yet to make much of an impact at the pro level. He's no better than 4th on the depth chart right now in St. Louis, and Austin is unlikely to climb unless injuries hit. In return leagues he'll have some value, and he might be a cheap flier to take in certain matchups in DFS.

Rams | Todd Gurley's availability still unknown    Fri Jun 19, 07:34 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley's (knee) timetable is still up in the air as he continues to rehabilitate from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Fisher said Gurley has been doing well but could start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list if necessary. On the PUP list to start the season, Gurley would be forced out of action for the first six weeks of the regular season. After that, the Rams would then have three weeks to decide whether or not to activate him or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve. Fisher added that if Gurley does not go on the PUP list, he could play sooner than people think.

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) did not practice at minicamp Tuesday, June 16. He is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: We won't see Gurley practice until training camp. Even then, the Rams should be cautious when easing him back into the swing of things. Gurley has superstar potential, but recovering from this knee injury could slow his production early in his rookie season.

Rams | Looking to lock up Nick Foles    Tue Jun 16, 12:22 AM

The St. Louis Rams are looking to lock up QB Nick Foles to a long-term contract. The two sides have had initial talks, and they're expected to ramp up leading up to the season.

Footballguys view: The Rams have moved on from the Sam Bradford era, and Foles looks to be the guy they're going to rely on as the starting quarterback in the near future. The reported target date is before Week 1 of the regular season. That's a bit odd considering Foles has yet to play a down for them and he's coming off a shoulder injury that cut short his 2014 season with the Eagles.

Rams | Chris Long almost 100 percent    Sat Jun 13, 09:10 PM

St. Louis Rams DE Chris Long (ankle) has been encouraged by his progress during organized team activities (OTAs), and he feels like he is almost back to his old self after missing 10 games due to a unique ankle injury in 2014. Long said he is almost back to 100 percent healthy.

Footballguys view: Long missed most of last season, but he did return for the final five games of 2014. He only had one sack last year as he didn't look like his old self. Long has a $12.5 million cap number this year, so getting him back to full strength (and full production) is a must for the Rams.

Rams | Sean Mannion signs deal    Fri Jun 12, 08:27 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Sean Mannion signed a deal with the team Friday, June 12. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We're not crazy about Mannion's upside for dynasty owners. Sure, he's got a big arm and can move around a little. His problems come with pressure. He's frazzled too easily when under duress, and it seriously impacts his decision-making skills. We'll have to see him show more poise as a passer against NFL rushers before getting excited about his long-term outlook.

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley signed a contract with the team Friday, June 12. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We believe Gurley could be one of the best running backs in the game when healthy. He's currently recovering from an ACL injury he suffered last year at Georgia. There's a chance that Gurley is held out of most (if not all) of the preseason as he continues to recover. We could see the Rams ease him into action as the regular season starts.
