Rams | Los Angeles hoping for explosive offense    Sat Jun 25, 10:38 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley will be the focal point of the offense, offensive coordinator Rob Boras said, but head coach Jeff Fisher said the ball will be spread around a little more to try to generate explosive plays.

Footballguys view: Gurley is going in the mid-first round, and he has a chance to be the most valuable player in fantasy leagues this year. He should take over a larger role in the passing game, and he is likely to be even more impressive physically now that he is well over one year removed from his ACL tear.

Rams | Two players waived    Fri Jun 24, 08:39 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR J.J. Worton and LB Matthew Wells were waived Friday, June 24.

Rams | Prepared to be without RB Tre Mason    Sun Jun 19, 06:27 PM

The Los Angeles Rams are prepared to be without third-year RB Tre Mason according to Los Angeles Daily News writer Jack Wang. Head coach Jeff Fisher said at a recent minicamp that the team had to "prepare ourselves that Tre's not going to be here." Mason has missed all offseason workouts since his March arrest on drug and traffic charges.

Footballguys view: Aside from superstar starter Todd Gurley and Mason, the Rams have no other drafted back on the roster. Benny Cunningham, Aaron Green, Malcolm Brown, Chase Reynolds, and Trey Watts were all college free agents. Behind the workhorse Gurley, Cunningham should be at the top of the depth chart. However, 2015 UDFA Malcolm Brown is a player we have an appreciation for. Brown can wear down defenses and at 225 pounds he's tough to bring down with a head of steam. Dynasty owners should be monitoring these backs to see how things shake out.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson injured    Fri Jun 17, 03:14 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson (jaw) was involved in a collision during organized team activities last week but will be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Johnson signed his one-year franchise tender earlier this year with the hope that he could come to a long-term agreement. This injury isn't going to help that. The two sides have until July 15th to work out any new contract.

Rams | Jared Goff has a long way to go    Fri Jun 17, 02:18 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff is 'nowhere near being ready to start Week 1,' analyst Steve Wyche said on NFL Network. 'He's only had offseason workout practices, but he's swimming in it. Training camp is vital for him. I spoke to one team official that said they are looking forward to seeing him in pads and preseason games because his ability to improvise is some of his strengths. But do not be surprised - I know the expectation is for him to start Week 1 - but don't be shocked if Case Keenum is the starter.'

Footballguys view: This shouldn't be a shocking report, and it certainly doesn't mean there's something wrong with Goff. The rookie has to get used to the speed and the discipline of the pros...just like Carson Wentz (Eagles) or Paxton Lynch (Broncos). Goff is the future of the team, and he'll be the starter when he's ready. All Keenum is doing is keeping the seat warm.

Rams | Case Keenum remains starter for now    Thu Jun 16, 07:58 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum will enter training camp as the starting quarterback, with QB Jared Goff assuming the backup position, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: That will last until the end of training camp. The team didn't mortgage the future for Jared Goff so he could hold a clipboard. We wouldn't start either of them and best case scenario, Goff ends up a low-end QB3.

Rams | Jared Goff gaining comfort    Wed Jun 15, 02:32 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff looked good in drills with the first-team offense in practice Tuesday, June 14, and he has gained more of a level of comfort as he has progressed during offseason workouts. One are area in which he has improved is with the speed of the game, in which he admitted is a lot different than in college. Goff said he's been able to successfully slow the game down of late. He's also come a long way in deciphering what the defense is showing him.

Footballguys view: Let's slow our roll before we go hog wild over a guy in shorts without pads. It's good he seems comfortable with the playbook--but expected since he was the most pro-ready of the 2016 quarterback class--but we need to see him react under pressure. As of now we still see him as a decent QB3, and that's pretty much it.

Rams | Jared Goff works with first team    Wed Jun 15, 02:48 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff took first-team reps during organized team activities Tuesday, June 14.

Footballguys view: It has begun! All hail Goff, first of his name, breaker of interception records! That's our nerdy way of saying we think it will be a rough first season for the former CAL standout. A low-end group of receivers, a shaky offensive line and Todd Gurley make starting Goff a risky idea and we see him as no more than a QB3 or worse.

Rams | E.J. Gaines battling back    Wed Jun 15, 02:47 AM

Los Angeles Rams CB E.J. Gaines (foot) missed last season due to foot surgery. He has been limited during organized team activities (OTAs), but said he would be ready to compete for a starting spot opposite CB Trumaine Johnson during training camp.

Rams | Two roster moves made     Sat Jun 11, 03:30 PM

Los Angeles Rams DL Louis Trinca-Pasat (undisclosed) was waived/injured Friday, June 10. Undrafted free-agent LS Jeff Overbaugh (San Diego State) was signed.

Rams | Stedman Bailey hopes to play again    Sat Jun 11, 12:43 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Stedman Bailey (head) said he hopes to receive clearance to play again at some point. Bailey was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list this week so he can remain around the team. He has helped some of the assistant coaches during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine Bailey getting back to football after getting shot in the head. The Rams were reportedly considering keeping him around in a non-football capacity.

Rams | Temarrick Hemingway also signs    Thu Jun 9, 04:29 PM

Los Angeles Rams TE Temarrick Hemingway signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, June 9. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Hemingway is a late round draft pick who won't contribute much. Though the sun also rises for any player who can catch on a Rams team with few playmaking receivers, ask not for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for someone else, not Hemingway. If you rely on him, it could be death in the (Sunday) afternoon.

Rams | Tyler Higbee inks deal    Thu Jun 9, 04:18 PM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, June 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: While he has playmaking ability, Higbee is going to be held back by a run-first offense and a rookie quarterback. He's also not much of a blocker, which could limit his time on the field. He's no more than a low-end TE3 or TE4.

Rams | Jared Goff officially signs    Thu Jun 9, 04:02 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff officially signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, June 9, and it'll be worth $27.9 million with an $18.6 million signing bonus. Goff's deal will include a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Goff is the guy in Los Angeles (man that still sounds weird) but he has a steep learning curve, few good receivers and a fantastic running back who will carry the load. At most, consider him a QB3.

Rams | Jared Goff nearing deal    Thu Jun 9, 12:53 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff is expected to sign his rookie four-year contract Thursday, June 9. All first-round picks have fifth-year options in their contracts.

Footballguys view: Goff is the undisputed starter for the Rams but between the lack of weapons at receiver, his overall rawness and Todd Gurley being a monster, we aren't going anywhere near him on draft day. He's an upside bench addition, if you feel like being a little risky.

Rams | Stedman Bailey could stick around    Wed Jun 8, 01:05 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Stedman Bailey (head) will revert to the Non-Football Injury list and could continue helping out around the team while he recovers from two gunshot wounds to his head. He has not been cleared to return to football activity, but the Rams would like to keep him around, even if that role doesn't allow him to play, according to a team source.

Rams | Two players signed    Tue Jun 7, 08:30 PM

Free-agent RB Terrence Magee (Ravens) and undrafted free-agent TE Benson Browne (North Carolina State) signed with the Los Angeles Rams Tuesday, June 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Magee is still a player we're monitoring in super, super deep dynasty leagues. He's a good all-purpose back with natural instincts for running the rock.

Rams | Kain Colter cut    Tue Jun 7, 08:21 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Kain Colter was released Tuesday, June 7.

Footballguys view: Colter was a QB during his college career at Northwestern, but he's been trying to make it with the Rams (and earlier in his career with the Vikings) as a WR.

Rams | Stedman Bailey waived    Tue Jun 7, 05:44 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Stedman Bailey (head) was waived Tuesday, June 7, with a Non-Football Injury designation, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bailey was shot in the head twice last November and was trying to make a comeback in the NFL. If he clears waivers, reports indicate the Rams are going to offer him a job in a non-football capacity.

Rams | Todd Gurley drops weight     Fri Jun 3, 04:13 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley lost 10 to 15 pounds this offseason and likely weighs 216 to 221 pounds at this point. Gurley said he did not look to lose weight this offseason but feels good and will not add any more weight.

Footballguys view: Losing weight is always tricky. He needs to shed the bad weight but still retain the ability to take the pounding that comes in the NFL. Gurley is a star on the rise, and he's got the upside to be the best fantasy RB in 2016.

Rams | Todd Gurley wants more catches    Fri Jun 3, 04:04 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley said he wants to be more involved in the passing game in 2016 as long as he can stay healthy.

Footballguys view: The Rams should give Gurley what he wants. He's got superstar upside in the NFL, and Gurley's blend of power and speed make him a candidate to lead the league in rushing this season. He caught 21 passes last year, but he could easily catch twice that amount this year.

Rams | Nick Foles' absence OK with coach    Wed Jun 1, 06:15 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles has not participated in organized team activities yet, but head coach Jeff Fisher is OK with Foles being absent. Fisher said he and Foles are on the same page. Foles is disgruntled at the prospect of possibly not being on the Rams' roster in 2016. Fisher said Foles prefers to stay away and get things worked out at this point.

Rams | Coach has high hopes for Tavon Austin    Wed Jun 1, 01:08 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin may be able to double his reception totals in 2016 because opposing defenses will look to stop RB Todd Gurley, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. Austin finished the 2015 with 52 receptions for 473 yards and five touchdowns.

Footballguys view: The Rams finally figured out how to use Austin the right way. He can be a relief-valve receiver for rookie QB Jared Goff, but improving those numbers from last year may prove to be difficult.

Rams | Nick Foles skipping workouts    Wed Jun 1, 09:18 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles has not participated in any offseason workouts since the team selected QB Jared Goff with the first overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, according to sources. Foles was not present for organized team activities Tuesday, May 31.

Footballguys view: If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a sound? If Foles skips workouts and hardly anybody notices, does it really matter? Foles has gone straight Sam Bradford here, and he needs to check himself. Somebody close to him needs to remind him that he is, in fact, Nick Foles. The Rams are moving on with Goff as their franchise QB....Foles should be a professional and show up.

Rams | Todd Gurley could see big workload    Tue May 31, 08:24 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley may average 20 touches per game this season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Nick Wagoner.

Footballguys view: We think 20 should be the minimum--not the average--for a superstar back like Gurley. The Rams are building the offense around him. Gurley can do the heavy lifting to keep things simpler for rookie QB Jared Goff. He could finish the season as a top-5 fantasy RB.

Free-agent DT Dominique Easley (Patriots) agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams Tuesday, May 17, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Rams add another first-round pick to the mix on their defensive line. Easley has had knee problems in his pro career, but he can be effective inside if healthy. We should see him work into the rotation behind Aaron Donald and Michael Brockers.

Rams | Coach impressed with Jared Goff    Sun May 8, 05:21 PM

Los Angeles Rams OB Jared Goff has been performing well during the rookie minicamp, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. 'He's doing a great job picking up our offense,' Fisher said. 'We've given him a lot more information than we did at the private workout and then that we did here at our meeting, and he's handled it without any problem. And that's the impressive thing. I passed him last night walking to the room and he was leaving the meeting room at 10 o'clock. He's that kind of guy. He'll spend the time. It's important to him.'

Footballguys view: Fisher should be impressed with Goff. The first-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft has the upside to be a franchise quarterback. Goff joins a team with a strong rushing attack and a stifling defense. That will greatly benefit the rookie as we're expecting him to start from Week 1.

Rams | Jared Goff compared to QB great    Fri May 6, 02:13 PM

Los Angeles Rams owners Stan Kroenke recently compared QB Jared Goff to former NFL QB Kurt Warner. Kroenke said both Warner and Goff have vision down the field.

Footballguys view: The Rams got Goff a lot of weapons in the draft, but they are mostly low wattage, even if fourth-round pick TE Tyler Higbee (Western Kentucky) was the most talented receiver among the tight ends in the draft, and sixth-round pick WR Mike Thomas (Southern Miss) was much more impressive than his non-combine invite resume would suggest.

Rams | Pick up Alec Ogletree's option    Mon May 2, 02:30 PM

Los Angeles Rams LB Alec Ogletree's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, May 2, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise given Ogletree's development into a stud linebacker for the Rams. A broken leg caused him to miss the final 12 games of last season, but when healthy he's an impact player. Don't be surprised if the Rams get a long-term deal done with him.

Rams | Tavon Austin's option exercised    Mon May 2, 02:28 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, May 2, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Last season, Austin had 52 receptions for 473 yards and five TDs--all career highs for the supercharged WR. In standard leagues, he was fantasy football's 21st-ranked wideout and that's about where he should finish once again this year.

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin is expected to have his fifth-year option exercised, but the team hopes to sign him to a long-term extension.

Footballguys view: It took some time, but finally the Rams figured out how to use Austin correctly. Last season, Austin had 52 receptions for 473 yards and five TDs--all career highs for the supercharged WR. In standard leagues, he was fantasy football's 21st-ranked wideout and that's about where he should finish once again this year.

Rams | Los Angeles adds Pharoh Cooper    Sat Apr 30, 01:14 PM

The Los Angeles Rams selected South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper with the 117th pick in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Footballguys view: Undersized but strong and possessing a tremendous burst off the line. Productive in college while his program was a bit chaotic, he's reliable and a solid player who the Rams will find a role for.

Rams | Two Rams QBs up for grabs    Fri Apr 29, 02:42 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles is on the trade block, and the Rams are willing to listen to offers for QB Case Keenum as well.

Footballguys view: It's going to be tough to sell anyone on Foles or Keenum, at least not for much return. The Rams don't want any questions about who is starting though, and will clear the decks of potential threats. They're burning the boats so nobody can return to the homeland.

Rams | Jared Goff great in red zone    Fri Apr 29, 01:11 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff had 28 touchdowns and no interceptions in the red zone in 2015, which was one of the things the Rams loved about him.

Footballguys view: Of course, the Rams need to get to the red zone, but if they can ride Todd Gurley between the 20s then Goff's ability in that zone can give them flexibility. We're still concerned about the coaching and offensive line, but Goff could have some red zone scores to make his fantasy owners happy.

Rams | Jared Goff will have to adjust    Fri Apr 29, 12:20 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff was in a 'Bear Raid' spread offense in college where he spent more than 99% of his time taking snaps out of the shotgun. The Rams were in a shotgun or pistol formation on fewer plays than any other team in the NFL in 2015. Goff has the chance to begin the season as the starter if the team deems him ready.

Footballguys view: It's the same thing for many quarterbacks coming into the league, and we think he'll get up to speed quick. That said, the offensive line is enough of an issue they might want to have Goff in shotgun a little more frequently this season.

Rams | Jared Goff starting opener the goal    Fri Apr 29, 11:25 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff starting the season opener is the goal for the team, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: As expected. They need a splash to keep the LA fans enthusiastic and Goff was more ready to jump right in than Carson Wentz or Paxton Lynch. The offensive line is a huge concern for us though, and we think his production will be low as he adjusts to that, the speed of the NFL and the team leans on Todd Gurley.
