Rams | Cooper Kupp a projected starter    Thu Jul 20, 09:42 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp was listed as a preseason starter on the unofficial list provided to the media Wednesday, July 19.

Footballguys view: We'll see what happens with the official depth chart but frankly, why not? The more time he gets to build chemistry with Jared Goff, the better. Kupp has tremendous skill and a wide array of moves to gain separation from coverage but while we like him, our enthusiasm is dampened by the tendency of rookie receivers to struggle and the expected slow advancement of Goff's game.

Rams | Dan Orlovsky joins Rams     Thu Jul 20, 04:46 PM

Free-agent QB Dan Orlovsky (Lions) agreed to a one-year deal with the Los Angeles Rams Thursday, July 20.

Footballguys view: We're not sure how much we'd feel comfortable with Orlovsky under center and as Jared Goff the starter isn't even really someone we'd be anxious to have on a redraft roster.

Rams | Three Rams could receive extensions    Mon Jul 17, 08:45 PM

Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald, LB Alec Ogletree and CB Lamarcus Joyner are players that the Rams are interested in signing to contract extensions.

Footballguys view: Donald skipped voluntary work this offseason but he did show up for mandatory minicamp. He was non-committal when asked about a potential holdout in training camp. A first-round pick in 2014, Donald is under the team's control through the 2018 season.

Rams | Tyler Higbee to avoid jail time    Sat Jul 15, 07:56 PM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee pled guilty to an assault charge that stemmed from a 2016 fight in a parking lot in Kentucky. He will be required to pay the victim an undisclosed amount and must perform 250 hours of community service but will avoid jail time.

Footballguys view: Higbee had some character concerns (mainly this transgression) coming out of Western Kentucky last year. With his legal problems behind him, we shall see if the league wants to step in and punish him. Higbee is an intriguing "F" tight end with upside as a receiver. He's competing with rookie Gerald Everett (second round, South Alabama) to be the starting tight end for the Rams in 2017.

Rams | Mike Thomas suspended four games    Fri Jul 14, 04:17 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Mike Thomas has been suspended for the first four games of the 2017 season for violating the NFL's policy of performance enhancing drugs.

Footballguys view: With the addition of Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds in the 2017 NFL draft, Thomas may not make the final roster. A sixth-round pick out of Southern Miss in 2016, Thomas had only three catches for 37 yards in 15 games as a rookie.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson a free agent next year?    Thu Jul 13, 02:47 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson is expected to become an unrestricted free agent next year, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. Johnson has been given the franchise tag two years in a row. Being tagged for a third year in a row would cost the Rams $24.1 million.

Footballguys view: While we won't be shocked if Johnson and the Rams manage to work something out, this is a team doing some hard rebuilding, and they may not want to sink an inordinate amount of money on one guy in the secondary. If/when Johnson does hit the free-agent market, he has a good chance to become the highest-paid cornerback in the league.

Rams | Teammate supports Aaron Donald    Fri Jul 7, 04:08 PM

Los Angeles Rams DT Michael Brockers said he believes DT Aaron Donald deserves a new contract and will respect any decision Donald makes in terms of a possible holdout.

Footballguys view: Donald deserves to be among the highest paid defensive lineman in the game and it makes sense to want to lock that pay in now instead of risking the loss of the big payday if he suffers a serious injury. The Rams defense is switching to a 3-4 under Wade Phillips, so this is important time for Donald to missing if he has a protracted contract dispute. Stay tuned.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson won't sign deal    Tue Jun 27, 10:49 AM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson will not reach a long-term deal with the Rams before the deadline for franchise players, according to a source.

Footballguys view: There has never been much optimism with Johnson's situation. The Rams will likely lose him next offseason after having tagged him the last two years and paying him $31 million fully guaranteed. Johnson will play a big role in year one of Wade Phillips defense then he's likely to bolt in free agency.

Rams | Cooper Kupp locked into slot role?    Sun Jun 25, 08:36 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp has established himself as the go-to slot receiver, according to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Kupp should become a favorite target of QB Jared Goff. The rookie from Eastern Washington reminded some in the scouting community of Eric Decker (Titans) because of his crisp routes and ability to make difficult catches. He's not as flashy as Robert Woods or Tavon Austin, but he might be more consistent.

Los Angeles Rams OL Rodger Saffold told ESPN's Alden Gonzalez he saw improvement in the communication with RB Todd Gurley during the offseason program.

Footballguys view: That's good news for Gurley and his fantasy owners. Under new head coach Sean McVay, Gurley could get back to the 1,000-yard mark that he surpassed in his rookie season. He's going off the board at RB12 (2.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rams | No chance for Trumaine Johnson deal?    Tue Jun 20, 10:04 AM

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson has virtually no chance to sign a long-term deal with the Rams, according to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora. The two sides spoke once on the subject and weren't close enough to have a follow-up.

Footballguys view: Johnson and the Rams have until July 17th to work out a long-term contract. After getting franchise tagged in back-to-back seasons, it doesn't seem like a deal is going to work out. The Rams may let Johnson hit the open market in 2018 after making $31 million guaranteed over the last two years.

Rams | Tyler Higbee favored to start?    Mon Jun 19, 03:10 PM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee appears to have a leg up on rookie TE Gerald Everett for the starting tight end position, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Alden Gonzalez.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Western Kentucky last year, Higbee has an athletic profile at 6'6" 249 pounds. He didn't do much as a rookie in 2016, but Higbee should be considered the frontrunner for the starting job entering training camp. Everett is a talented move tight end in his own right, but rookie tight ends are usually slow to progress at the pro level.

Rams | Jared Goff understands the offense    Mon Jun 19, 03:01 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff said he has understood and grasped all of head coach Sean McVay's so far this offseason. Goff said he has learned the offense much quicker this year than he did his rookie season. McVay said he has implemented about 95% of his offense so far.

Footballguys view: Goff was pretty bad as a rookie last year, but this new offense should be more capable of getting the best out of the second-year pro. He's a work in progress as a passer, but Goff should be better this year. Goff is a QB3 for fantasy owners in redraft leagues and this new offense greatly benefits his dynasty potential.

Rams | Mike Thomas has found his niche     Sun Jun 18, 08:20 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Mike Thomas has 'found a role for himself,' according to QB Jared Goff. 'He's one of our faster receivers and can stretch the defense,' Goff said. 'I think he enjoys that role and understands that he's going to be an over-the-top guy.'

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick out of Southern Miss in 2016, Thomas spent most of his rookie season playing on special teams. Thomas is a grinder with the speed to take the top off the defense. He's buried on the Rams depth chart but we're monitoring his progress in super deep dynasty leagues.

Rams | Cooper Kupp back at practice    Fri Jun 16, 10:05 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp (back) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, June 14, after suffering a back injury Tuesday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Good news for the rookie here. Kupp is a savvy player who can make tough catches with coverage draped all over him. Think Eric Decker when you think of Kupp's potential as a pro. Kupp is not flashy like Robert Woods or Tavon Austin, but he might become a favorite target of second-year QB Jared Goff in 2017.

Rams | Nothing new with Aaron Donald contract talks    Fri Jun 16, 04:10 PM

Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said DT Aaron Donald is still a priority for the Rams but there is nothing new to report in terms of contract extension negotiations. Donald skipped all of the organized team activities because of his contract situation.

Footballguys view: He showed up to mandatory minicamp so as to not get fined. The Rams picked up Donald's fifth-year option, so the team controls his rights for the next two seasons. Rather than wait, it would behoove the Rams to get an extension done with one of the best in the business.

Rams | LAR unsure about extending Trumaine Johnson    Fri Jun 16, 02:50 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson will remain a candidate for a contract extension offer, but ESPN's Alden Gonzalez believes general manager Les Snead sounds 'noncommittal' in regards to getting a deal done.

Footballguys view: Snead had previously expressed a desire to wait until after the offseason program concluded to make sure Johnson was a fit for new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips' system that asks its cornerbacks to play a lot of man coverage.

Los Angeles Rams QB Dylan Thompson was waived Thursday, June 15.

Rams | Tavon Austin continues steady progress from wrist surgery    Thu Jun 15, 01:48 PM

Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times reports Rams WR Tavon Austin has been steadily progressing as he recovers from wrist surgery. Austin is excited about his role in the offense under new head coach Sean McVay. "I just want the ball in my hand any type of way," Austin said. "I don't care if you give it to me vertically, if I get jet sweeps or, whatever, screens or options.

Footballguys view: Austin lost his big play ability in 2016, though the quarterback situation certainly didn't help. An offseason of work with Jared Goff would have been great but there is time in training camp. Even if he gets back towards where he was in 2015, his upside has been rather limited though and it could be some time before he has a large and consistent impact in fantasy.

Rams | Cooper Kupp hurt at minicamp    Tue Jun 13, 07:17 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp (back) injured his lower back at minicamp Tuesday, June 13, and was walking around gingerly.

Footballguys view: Kupp is a precision route-runner who is quite savvy for a young receiver. He's likely to become a favorite target for second-year QB Jared Goff. Robert Woods and Tavon Austin are ahead of him on the depth chart, but Kupp should be able to help move the chains regularly as the no3 option.

Rams | Robert Quinn had minor surgery    Tue Jun 13, 07:11 PM

Los Angeles Rams DE Robert Quinn (wrist) recently underwent minor surgery on his hand, according to head coach Sean McVay, and was sporting a cast around his right wrist. He will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: It's minor and not really a big deal, but it is yet another injury for Quinn. He's played in 17 games combined over the last two years due to various injuries. Getting him back on track is something we expect from new DC Wade Phillips.

Rams | Cooper Kupp to serve as safety blanket?    Mon Jun 12, 04:22 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp is a solid candidate to be QB Jared Goff's safety blanket, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Alden Gonzalez. Gonzalez cites Kupp's route-running, football smarts and polished game as reasons for being Goff's go-to guy.

Footballguys view: Kupp's game is all about reliability. He's a sound route-runner with the ability to gash a defense with run after the catch yards. Robert Woods may be the flashier guy and Tavon Austin may be quicker, but Kupp could be the security blanket Goff needs in year two. Kupp has a current ADP of WR61 (13.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rams | Kayvon Webster working with starters    Sun Jun 11, 04:36 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Kayvon Webster has been working with the first-team defense during organized team activities and believes he can handle the starting job this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Webster knows the Wade Phillips defense like the back of his hand after working in it the last two years in Denver. He's a big/physical corner with the speed to keep up with receivers on deep routes. We'll see if Webster can win the starting job opposite Trumaine Johnson in 2017.

Rams | Cooper Kupp signed    Sat Jun 10, 10:22 AM

Los Angeles Rams third-round draft choice WR Cooper Kupp signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, June 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Eastern Washington prospect has intriguing upside and Jarvis Landry/Eric Decker-like ability. He can cut a rug and gets open with clean routes and burst to separate. Kupp grew up idolizing Larry Fitzgerald and the rookie mimics him in the way his passes are caught -- snaring them from the sky. Crisp routes and good hands are the hallmark of Kupp's game, plus he can also track passes well over his shoulder. He'll work into the mix as the no3 wideout for the Rams behind Robert Woods and Tavon Austin in 2017.

Rams | Gerald Everett signed    Sat Jun 10, 09:58 AM

Los Angeles Rams second-round draft choice TE Gerald Everett signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, June 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Everett has all the tools scouts want in a pass-catching tight end. He's got the speed and athleticism to work all three levels of the field. Everett is not a great route-runner but he does a good job of using his frame to box out defenders and make contested catches. Everett averaged 11.38 yards after catch per reception in 2016, a mark that ranked second in the FBS. The rookie will compete with Tyler Higbee for the starting tight end job with the Rams in 2017.

Rams | Tyler Higbee excited for offense    Sat Jun 10, 12:30 AM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee said he is excited to see how head coach Sean McVay uses the tight ends after the success McVay had with the position as the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: We love the upside and potential there with Higbee in this offense...but we worry about his quarterback situation with second-year pro Jared Goff. Higbee could be a great relief-valve receiver when Goff is under duress. However, the second-year pro from Western Kentucky is going to have to keep 2017 second-round pick Gerald Everett (South Alabama) at bay. Higbee and Everett will compete for the starting job and potentially a Jordan Reed-like role in 2017.

Rams | Mike Thomas eyeing big role    Sat Jun 10, 12:18 AM

Los Angeles Rams WR Mike Thomas has been seeing most of the first-team reps in place of WR Tavon Austin (wrist) during OTAs, and Thomas said he believes the coaching staff understands the potential he brings to the offense.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick out of Southern Miss in 2016, Thomas is known as a great competitor. He can make plays against larger cornerbacks with his body control, concentration and aggressiveness as a pass-catcher. We'll see where he ends up on the depth chart when Austin is back and healthy.

Rams | Fewer catches for Todd Gurley?    Thu Jun 1, 04:40 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley may not be counted on as much in the passing game this year with the addition of RB Lance Dunbar, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Alden Gonzalez. The Rams want Gurley's focus to be on the running game. He was the focus of opposing defenses last year while only averaging 3.2 yards per carry.

Footballguys view: This report has been out there for a week or so. It's another ding against Gurley's fantasy stock. They don't have much to their passing attack, so defenses should stack the line to stuff the run. His current ADP of RB10 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues is fairly accurate for his projected production in 2017.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson skipped practice    Thu Jun 1, 11:44 AM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson skipped practice Tuesday, May 30, and head coach Sean McVay seemed surprised by his absence. 'We weren't expecting him not to be here, but I'm sure that we'll find that out,' McVay said. 'He's done a great job communicating with us, but I'm not really sure where he was today.'

Footballguys view: The Rams hadn't extended him yet as they want to see how he fits in Wade Phillips scheme, but he may not be happy with that and being franchise tagged for the second year in a row. Of course, not being there isn't helping show he fits, but it's about the only leverage a tagged player has.

Rams | Greg Robinson on second-team    Thu Jun 1, 10:36 AM

Los Angeles Rams OT Greg Robinson is working with the second-team offense in practice. OT Jamon Brown is now working with the first-team offense.

Footballguys view: That's pretty brutal for a first round, second-overall pick, but it's been a long time coming. A move to guard might be in order. Brown has been a guard since arriving with the Rams, but he's impressed new head coach Sean McVay.

Rams | Jared Goff not a lock to start Week 1?    Tue May 30, 10:26 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff has 'done a nice job of getting better,' according to head coach Sean McVay. However, McVay added, 'But you always want to make sure you're playing the guy that you feel like gives you the best ability to win football games. Right now, Jared is the starter.'

Footballguys view: Let's not go overboard here. Goff was the no1 overall pick last year, although it was not McVay's regime that selected him. He'll compete with Sean Mannion in training camp, but we think Goff gets the nod. Whether or not he holds onto the job during the year is another story.

Rams | Dylan Thompson signed by Rams    Tue May 30, 07:50 PM

Free-agent QB Dylan Thompson (Panthers) was signed by the Los Angeles Rams Tuesday, May 30.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of South Carolina in 2015, Thompson will provide the Rams with a camp arm behind Jared Goff and Sean Mannion.

Rams | De'Mard Llorens waived    Tue May 30, 07:44 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB De'Mard Llorens was waived Tuesday, May 30.

Rams | Lance Dunbar to be a factor    Tue May 30, 09:38 AM

Los Angeles Rams RB Lance Dunbar is a piece that head coach Sean McVay wants to establish in the passing game.

Footballguys view: Dunbar could play the Chris Thompson role in McVay's offense. Last year for Washington, Thompson caught 49 passes for 349 yards and two touchdowns (along with 68 carries for 356 yards). Projecting 30 catches or so is not outlandish for Dunbar this year. At that rate of production, he wouldn't be much of a fantasy factor in 2017.

Rams | Todd Gurley likely to see fewer targets    Tue May 30, 09:37 AM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley is likely to receive fewer targets in the passing game with the addition of RB Lance Dunbar. Gurley had his targets double from 26 in 2015 to 58 in 2016.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Gurley is a better receiver than either Rob Kelley or Alfred Morris were for McVay in Washington, but it will be interesting to see if his targets go down. We think they should feed Gurley as much as they possibly can, but McVay wants to use Dunbar similar to the way he used Chris Thompson in Washington. Gurley has a current ADP of RB10 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rams | Gerald Everett productive after catch    Sun May 28, 03:32 PM

Los Angeles Rams rookie TE Gerald Everett forced nine more missed tackles in any of the college tight end last season and generated 63.5 percent of his 1,593 career receiving yards after the catch, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: In 2016, Everett averaged a whopping 11.38 yards after the catch per reception. That ranked second in the nation and was almost double the FBS average of 6.34. His route running is poor, but that should improve with NFL coaching. Everett also needs to play with better concentration as he dropped 9.1 percent (FBS average was 4.4 percent) of the passes sent his way in 2016.

Rams | Robert Woods eyeing lead receiver role    Sat May 27, 01:00 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Robert Woods is determined to be a 'No. 1 receiver,' according to the Los Angeles Times' Gary Klein.

Footballguys view: Woods is out to prove that he's more than a decent no2 wide receiver in the NFL. That's the role he played in Buffalo behind Sammy Watkins, but with his new team Woods will have a chance to be the main man. We see him as a low-ceiling WR1 for the Rams, especially since they made moves in the draft to add pass-catching talent like WR Cooper Kupp, WR Josh Reynolds and TE Gerald Everett. Projecting Woods to catch around 60-ish passes is fair, but that doesn't make him much of a fantasy asset. Woods is getting drafted as a late-round flier (WR73, 14.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rams | Robert Woods to lead team in catches?    Wed May 24, 12:52 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Robert Woods is 'perhaps the best bet to lead the (team) in catches,' according to ESPN's Alden Gonzalez.

Footballguys view: Woods has been waiting for an opportunity to show that he can be more than a no2 WR like he was in Buffalo. With Kenny Britt (Browns) moving on in free agency, the Rams should see Woods as the no1 WR and he could become a favorite for QB Jared Goff. Taking a late-round flier on Woods isn't a bad idea. His current ADP is WR71 (14.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Rams | Jared Goff discusses progress    Tue May 23, 01:01 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff said Monday, May 22, learning Rams head coach Sean McVay's offense has been easier than last year's learning curve under then-head coach Jeff Fisher. Goff noted how different the systems are to learn, and Rams offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur praised Goff's pace of picking up the system.

Footballguys view: The Rams should put in an offense catered to Goff's skill set. Goff needs to get rid of the ball quicker, and show better poise when facing the blitz. The Rams worked to put better weapons around him in the passing game, and that alone should help him take a step forward in 2017.

Rams | Gerald Everett may have Jordan Reed role    Fri May 19, 07:36 PM

Los Angeles Rams TE Gerald Everett said he expects to have a role similar to the one Washington Redskins TE Jordan Reed had in head coach Sean McVay's offensive scheme.

Footballguys view: The potential to be a Pro Bowl caliber player (eventually) is there for the rookie from South Alabama. The Rams added Everett in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft with the idea that he could be a playmaker in McVay's offense. He's not a great route runner, but that could get better in time. What Everett can do is burn any linebacker trying to cover him after the catch. He's a mismatch on the field due to his athleticism and WR-like ball skills.

Rams | Cooper Kupp opens eyes    Thu May 18, 11:29 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Cooper Kupp stood out in rookie minicamp, according to head coach Sean McVay, and McVay praised Kupp for his consistency.

Footballguys view: Kupp should be opening eyes, as he's really a talented player. Coming out of Eastern Washington, Kupp looks like Eric Decker because of his hands and route-running ability. He was a productive slot receiver in college, but he could move outside in the pros too.
