Rams | Case Keenum likely to open as starter    Mon Aug 22, 08:16 AM

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum is likely to start Week 1 for the team over QB Jared Goff. Keenum has delivered three touchdowns in four drives this preseason.

Footballguys view: That's not a shock based on Keenum's (and Goff's) play. Goff is the future, but he clearly needs more time to develop. Keenum is a seasoned pro who can be capable as a starter while Goff gets up to speed. The Rams are built on a solid defense and superstar RB Todd Gurley. Keenum needs only to play it safe and not turn the ball over to help this team consistently win in 2016.

Rams | Pharoh Cooper locked into starting role?    Sun Aug 21, 11:24 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Pharoh Cooper, WR Kenny Britt and WR Tavon Austin are currently the top three receivers, head coach Jeff Fisher said.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick by the Rams this year, Cooper gets off the line quickly and can change direction on a dime without losing much speed. When the play breaks down, Cooper does a good job of finding the soft spot in a defense and works his way back to the QB. The rookie does need to show better 'my ball' mentality when trying to make a contested catch. He can take some big hits, but he rarely holds onto the ball in such a situation. Monitor him in dynasty leagues only.

Rams | Brian Quick not in the mix?    Sun Aug 21, 11:09 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Brian Quick was not mentioned by head coach Jeff Fisher when Fisher discussed the wide receiver competition.

Footballguys view: Quick hasn't done many things of note during Hard Knocks -- except for wrecking a go cart with fellow WR Kenny Britt. He's certainly no lock to make the 53-man roster.

Rams | Bradley Marquez suffers leg injury    Sun Aug 21, 09:58 AM

Los Angeles Rams WR Bradley Marquez (ankle) suffered a right ankle injury in the third quarter of the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, Aug. 20, and had to be helped off the field. He is slated to undergo an MRI exam, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Rams | Case Keenum still in the lead    Thu Aug 18, 08:38 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum is still clearly in the lead ahead of QB Jared Goff for the starting spot, according to head coach Jeff Fisher. Goff took a handful of snaps in practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, with the first-team and is expected to play a series or two with the starters in the second preseason game.

Footballguys view: It's sort of the opposite of what we expected when they moved up and drafted Goff. The expectation has been that he will be thrown into the fire and forced to improve on the fly. Making him sit a year isn't a bad idea, and is actually shockingly savvy for Fisher. On the other hand, if Fisher really is in line for a contract extension (which still baffles us), he might be comfortable to play the long game with his rookie quarterback and nurse him along. We wouldn't want either guy on our fantasy roster, more because we expect all Todd Gurley all the time than because of their ability.

Rams | Jared Goff bangs up shoulder    Sat Aug 13, 11:34 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff (shoulder) played limited snaps in his preseason debut Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Dallas Cowboys as head coach Jeff Fisher said Goff banged up his shoulder. 'He took a hit early, his non-throwing shoulder was a little sore so I didn't want to mess with it at all,' Fisher said.

Footballguys view: Injuries are a concern for a QB like Goff. First, he's slightly built and needs to put on more muscle to take the NFL beating he's going to get. Next, Goff is a brave passer who will stand in the pocket and take a big hit to deliver a deep strike. We love his upside, but feel he may be a bit like Cowboys starter Tony Romo at his best.

Rams | Benny Cunningham finds end zone    Sat Aug 13, 11:33 PM

Rams | Case Keenum sharp in preseason opener    Sat Aug 13, 11:32 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum completed six of his seven pass attempts for 58 yards in the preseason opener Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Dallas Cowboys. He started over the No. 1 overall pick QB Jared Goff.

Footballguys view: Keenum could begin the year as the Rams starter, but we all know that Goff is the future. Neither is a great fantasy option in 2016.

Rams | Tyler Higbee carving bigger role    Fri Aug 12, 11:15 AM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee has been the biggest surprise in training camp, and he appears headed for serious playing time. Higbee makes a play every day, is a big target and has good hands.

Footballguys view: This wasn't a great TE class, but Higbee was one of the best in this draft class. He's a good athlete who creates mismatches on the field as he's too fast for LBs to cover and too big for DBs to cover down the seam. Dynasty owners should have already added him, while re-draft owners need to keep him on the waiver wire speed dial.

Rams | Mike Thomas struggling to hold on    Fri Aug 12, 11:04 AM

Los Angeles Rams WR Mike X. Thomas has shown a propensity to get open in training camp, but he has more drops than any other player on the team.

Footballguys view: Thomas plays with a lot of desire and competitiveness. He dominated in college at Southern Miss and plays larger than his size (6'1" 200 pounds). It's no surprise that he's getting open, but he's got to cut down on the drops if he wants to play up to his potential.

Rams | Case Keenum the starter for now    Tue Aug 9, 11:38 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum has a real chance to open the season as a starter over QB Jared Goff, and that is the team's plan for now. Goff could change the team's minds in the preseason.

Footballguys view: Keenum was actually better than Nick Foles last year and he played decently under new offensive coordinator Rob Boras. The team also brought in Mike Groh, who worked under Adam Gase and Marc Trestman in Chicago, to coordinate the passing game. It can't get worse.

Rams | Case Keenum to start preseason game    Sat Aug 6, 08:42 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum will be the starting quarterback for the first preseason game Saturday, Aug. 13.

Footballguys view: Keenum is at the top of the depth chart--for now. He may even begin the regular season as the starter, but there's a good chance it's rookie Jared Goff instead. Goff has been impressing during Rams camp so far, and the no.1 overall pick has exciting upside. When he fully develops as a pro, we see him as a Tony Romo-like prospect as a passer.

  Rams | Tyler Higbee a red-zone weapon?    Sat Aug 6, 12:30 AM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee has been making plays since 'he walked off the bus at the airport,' head coach Jeff Fisher said Friday, Aug. 5, and Fisher expects Higbee to be an important red-zone target.

Footballguys view: Fisher had an athletic TE with the Titans and the Rams with Jared Cook, but he never really got the most out of him. Higbee may not be as large or freakishly athletic as Cook, but he can move well and attack the deep seam of a defense. Keep the rookie in mind as a late-round TE2 in deeper leagues.

Rams | Tyler Higbee works with first-team    Fri Aug 5, 12:05 AM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee has spent time with the first-team offense during training camp, and head coach Jeff Fisher said he has made 'lots of plays.'

Footballguys view: Higbee has incredible natural talent, and he's a player we appreciate in dynasty leagues. Fantasy owners in re-draft leagues could take a last-round flier on Higbee if he continues to impress in camp and the preseason.

Rams | Case Keenum begins camp as starter    Wed Aug 3, 02:41 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum ran the first-team offense Tuesday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: We don't think it will take long for no.1 overall pick QB Jared Goff to take over with the Rams. Goff has reportedly been impressive during the early portion of camp, and we could see him named the starter sometime later this month. Fantasy owners should only consider the rookie gunslinger as a QB3. Dynasty players should see shades of a young Tony Romo (Cowboys) in Goff's game.

Rams | Todd Gurley to play more on third down?    Fri Jul 29, 11:18 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley will likely see some playing time on third downs, according to beat writer Myles Simmons, but Simmons believes RB Benny Cunningham will still see most of the snaps in third-and-long situations.

Footballguys view: Gurley could be the first pick in your draft, and that's something to be prepared for if you're targeting the talented back in the early first round. In 12-team PPR leagues, Gurley is RB1 (1.05) and he's arguably the best young RB in the league. We're excited about his potential this season.

Rams | Tre Mason misses team meeting    Fri Jul 29, 02:27 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Tre Mason is believed to have missed the mandatory team meeting Friday, July 29, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Mason appears to be in the throes of a mental health problem of a similar severity to the ones that torpedoed the careers of Joseph Randle and Titus Young. We hope he finds the help he needs. In the meantime, 2015 preseason star Malcolm Brown could have the inside track to be the between the tackles backup to Todd Gurley.

Rams | Case Keenum not sweating Jared Goff    Fri Jul 29, 01:16 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum said Thursday, July 28, this is the first time he has entered training camp atop the depth chart, and he believes the competition with QB Jared Goff will make both he and Goff and the team better.

Footballguys view: The Rams have a tough decision here, as Goff could benefit from more time in the incubator, but Keenum is unlikely to make them competitive. Goff's pocket presence and level of competition at Cal seemed to indicate that he wouldn't have as rough a transition to the NFL as #2 pick Carson Wentz, but the Rams aren't contending for the Super Bowl this year in any case, so the smarter move here is to sit Goff at the beginning of the season unless he clearly outplays Keenum in training camp.

Rams | Nick Foles released    Wed Jul 27, 03:49 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles was released Wednesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Things aren't going your way when you get benched for Case Keenum as Foles experienced last year. When the Rams added QB Jared Goff with the first-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, the writing was on the wall that they were done with Foles. Some team should be interested in bringing him on as a backup.

Rams | Tre Mason's family worried    Tue Jul 26, 10:01 AM

Los Angeles Rams RB Tre Mason's family is worried about his mental state after the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Dept. was called to his house five times since March 28. During one of those visits, Mason agreed to check into a facility but failed to do so. The last incident was Saturday, July 23, but Mason was not arrested. Mason has not been accused of hurting anyone during the incidents. However, on one occasion, a family member told cops she didn't want Mason to leave the house because he hadn't slept in days, and she was worried 'he will get hurt.'

Rams | Todd Gurley ready for first full camp    Wed Jul 20, 10:30 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) will be close to two full years removed from an anterior cruciate ligament injury, and conventional wisdom says players generally do not get back to full strength until two years after the injury. He will go through his first full training camp, and running backs coach Skip Peete said there is no limit to what Gurley can accomplish in his second NFL season.

Footballguys view: Gurley has the skill set to be the best RB in the NFL...this year. Fantasy owners should consider him a top-2 RB in any format, and Gurley should go off the board in the mid-first round at the latest. He's going to be the centerpiece of the Rams offense...especially while they get rookie QB Jared Goff up to speed in the pros.

Rams | Tyler Higbee might have big chance    Wed Jul 20, 10:29 PM

Los Angeles Rams TE Tyler Higbee might see plenty of opportunities sooner rather than later, and some in the organization feel he might be the team's best pass-catching tight end on the roster.

Footballguys view: Higbee is an athletic move TE who can attack the seam of a defense. The rookie can create mismatches on the field, and it will be interesting to see if he can quickly forge a bond with fellow rookie Jared Goff. He's not going to get picked up in re-draft leagues, but he's a dynasty prospect we are intrigued by.

Rams | Alec Ogletree could elevate defense    Wed Jul 20, 10:27 PM

Los Angeles Rams LB Alec Ogletree (ankle) was on the verge of a breakout season last year before suffering an ankle injury. Beat writer Nick Wagoner says Ogletree brings a level of athleticism and speed to his new position that could help elevate the defense to the lofty expectations it has had the past couple of seasons.

Rams | All eyes on Jared Goff    Wed Jul 20, 10:27 PM

The Los Angeles Rams are hopeful QB Jared Goff will win the starting job sooner rather than later and he likely will, according to beat writer Nick Wagoner. However, his development through training camp and the preseason will be critical in shaping the team's expectations and season.

Footballguys view: We like Goff a lot and will be interested to see how he develops as a pro. He makes quick decisions and has no problem staying in the pocket under duress to make a field-flipping throw. We would like to see him lead receivers a little better, and his size (6'4" 215 pounds) does make us a bit concerned about his durability. As a rookie, we can only recommend Goff as a QB3 for fantasy owners. However, we love his dynasty upside and won't be surprised if he's a top-12 QB someday.

Rams | Nick Foles should be at camp    Sun Jul 17, 02:47 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Nick Foles is expected to be present for training camp as the Rams wait for a quarterback vacancy or possible trade partner.

Footballguys view: With $8 million in dead money remaining, the Rams would be unlikely to cut Foles at this point. He stayed away from the team during minicamp and OTAs, but he should report to training camp to see if the Rams can trade him. Any sort of injury on another team could open the door for Foles. He does have plenty of starting experience, but his recent film is far from impressive. Some team would have to be desperate to even offer up a late-round pick for the veteran QB.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson unable to land new deal    Fri Jul 15, 04:22 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson did not receive a long-term deal Friday, July 15, and will play under the one-year franchise tag.

Footballguys view: There was no movement in this situation, so the fact Johnson didn't get a long-term deal was not a surprise. He'll play this season under the one-year franchise tag with a cap number of $13.9 million.

Rams | Todd Gurley impressed with Jared Goff    Sun Jul 10, 08:26 AM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff has impressed RB Todd Gurley. 'Couldn't ask for a better QB. We are just excited to have him (here),' Gurley said Friday, July 8. 'He's definitely learning. He's getting better. Just excited to play the upcoming season with him.'

Footballguys view: We love Goff's ability to scan the field quickly, process information rapidly and get rid of the ball before pressure can get to him. He was the sixth-most blitzed QB in 2015 (142 blitzes faced), yet was only contacted on 86 of those plays and sacked just 26 times. We'd like to see better pass placement from the rookie QB, and at 6'4" 215 pounds he's a bit leaner than ideal. Fantasy owners in re-draft leagues should see him as no more than a QB3. Dynasty players should see him as a potential Matt Ryan-like prospect.

Rams | Los Angeles hoping for explosive offense    Sat Jun 25, 10:38 PM

Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley will be the focal point of the offense, offensive coordinator Rob Boras said, but head coach Jeff Fisher said the ball will be spread around a little more to try to generate explosive plays.

Footballguys view: Gurley is going in the mid-first round, and he has a chance to be the most valuable player in fantasy leagues this year. He should take over a larger role in the passing game, and he is likely to be even more impressive physically now that he is well over one year removed from his ACL tear.

Los Angeles Rams WR J.J. Worton and LB Matthew Wells were waived Friday, June 24.

Rams | Prepared to be without RB Tre Mason    Sun Jun 19, 06:27 PM

The Los Angeles Rams are prepared to be without third-year RB Tre Mason according to Los Angeles Daily News writer Jack Wang. Head coach Jeff Fisher said at a recent minicamp that the team had to "prepare ourselves that Tre's not going to be here." Mason has missed all offseason workouts since his March arrest on drug and traffic charges.

Footballguys view: Aside from superstar starter Todd Gurley and Mason, the Rams have no other drafted back on the roster. Benny Cunningham, Aaron Green, Malcolm Brown, Chase Reynolds, and Trey Watts were all college free agents. Behind the workhorse Gurley, Cunningham should be at the top of the depth chart. However, 2015 UDFA Malcolm Brown is a player we have an appreciation for. Brown can wear down defenses and at 225 pounds he's tough to bring down with a head of steam. Dynasty owners should be monitoring these backs to see how things shake out.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson injured    Fri Jun 17, 03:14 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson (jaw) was involved in a collision during organized team activities last week but will be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Johnson signed his one-year franchise tender earlier this year with the hope that he could come to a long-term agreement. This injury isn't going to help that. The two sides have until July 15th to work out any new contract.

Rams | Jared Goff has a long way to go    Fri Jun 17, 02:18 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff is 'nowhere near being ready to start Week 1,' analyst Steve Wyche said on NFL Network. 'He's only had offseason workout practices, but he's swimming in it. Training camp is vital for him. I spoke to one team official that said they are looking forward to seeing him in pads and preseason games because his ability to improvise is some of his strengths. But do not be surprised - I know the expectation is for him to start Week 1 - but don't be shocked if Case Keenum is the starter.'

Footballguys view: This shouldn't be a shocking report, and it certainly doesn't mean there's something wrong with Goff. The rookie has to get used to the speed and the discipline of the pros...just like Carson Wentz (Eagles) or Paxton Lynch (Broncos). Goff is the future of the team, and he'll be the starter when he's ready. All Keenum is doing is keeping the seat warm.

Rams | Case Keenum remains starter for now    Thu Jun 16, 07:58 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Case Keenum will enter training camp as the starting quarterback, with QB Jared Goff assuming the backup position, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: That will last until the end of training camp. The team didn't mortgage the future for Jared Goff so he could hold a clipboard. We wouldn't start either of them and best case scenario, Goff ends up a low-end QB3.

Rams | Jared Goff gaining comfort    Wed Jun 15, 02:32 PM

Los Angeles Rams QB Jared Goff looked good in drills with the first-team offense in practice Tuesday, June 14, and he has gained more of a level of comfort as he has progressed during offseason workouts. One are area in which he has improved is with the speed of the game, in which he admitted is a lot different than in college. Goff said he's been able to successfully slow the game down of late. He's also come a long way in deciphering what the defense is showing him.

Footballguys view: Let's slow our roll before we go hog wild over a guy in shorts without pads. It's good he seems comfortable with the playbook--but expected since he was the most pro-ready of the 2016 quarterback class--but we need to see him react under pressure. As of now we still see him as a decent QB3, and that's pretty much it.
