49ers | Expect LaMichael James to be ready for Week 1    Wed Jul 30, 02:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James (elbow) will wear a brace on his dislocated elbow and should be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh.

Footballguys view: We'll see what kind of role James has in 2014. Carlos Hyde is likely to be the primary backup behind Frank Gore this year. James could be a change-of-pace back for the 49ers, and he could work as a return man as well.

49ers | Alfonso Smith contract update    Tue Jul 29, 11:39 AM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Alfonso Smith signed a one-year deal. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers had to add running back help with LaMichael James banged up (wrist) and Kendall Hunter (knee) out for the year.

49ers | One signed, one cut    Tue Jul 29, 10:37 AM

The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent RB Alfonso Smith (Cardinals) to an undisclosed deal and waived/injured OT Fou Fonoti (undisclosed).

Footballguys view: Smith is a decent all-purpose back, but he's essentially a camp body for the team. With LaMichael James (wrist) banged up, and Kendall Hunter (knee) out for the year, the 49ers needed to add depth at the position. These injuries are opening up an opportunity for guys like Carlos Hyde and Jewel Hampton (and Marcus Lattimore if healthy) behind Frank Gore.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore not yet cleared    Mon Jul 28, 11:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) has not been cleared to practice yet due to lingering concerns about his surgically repaired right knee. However, he appears close to joining his teammates.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners will have to be patient here. Lattimore's lack of clearance is a bit of a concern as he's well over a year removed from the injury. If he doesn't get healthy and show that he can be the back he used to be, Lattimore's pro career may be categorized as "what might have been."

49ers | Alfonso Smith joining team    Mon Jul 28, 11:26 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are expected to announce the signing of free-agent RB Alfonso Smith (Cardinals) Tuesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: The team needs healthy reinforcements with RBs Kendall Hunter (knee) likely out for the season, and RB LaMichael James (elbow) out at least a month.

49ers | Not close to deals with two upcoming FAs    Mon Jul 28, 05:42 PM

49ers | Frank Gore unlikely to play in preseason    Mon Jul 28, 12:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore is unlikely to play in the preseason this year. RBs Carlos Hyde and Jewel Hampton have both looked good so far during training camp. The injuries to RBs Kendall Hunter (knee) and LaMichael James (elbow) have left the team thin at the running back position. RB Marcus Lattimore isn't practicing yet due to physical limitations and not the mental side of his recovery from a significant knee injury in college.

Footballguys view: Carlos Hyde's ADP will go up in the wake of these recent injuries, but Gore will still be the lead back for this team. He's a solid third RB you can get as late as the 7th round, and his value may be closer to a high floor/low ceiling RB2.

  49ers | Plan to re-sign Mike Iupati    Mon Jul 28, 03:53 AM

49ers | LaMichael James may be ready for Week 1    Sun Jul 27, 08:24 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James (elbow) likely will miss the entire preseason but should be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. James is trying to make the roster as a reserve runner and special teams player. We'll see if he can look like his old self by the time the season starts.

49ers | LaMichael James dislocates elbow    Sun Jul 27, 07:49 PM

Updating an earlier report, San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James (elbow) suffered a dislocated elbow Sunday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Another blow for the 49ers' backfield here. They already lost Kendall Hunter for the season due to a knee injury. Without James on the field, a guy like Jewel Hampton will get a larger opportunity. We've always had an appreciation for Hampton is super deep dynasty leagues. Rookie Carlos Hyde should be the primary backup behind Frank Gore this year.

  49ers | Want to re-sign Kendall Hunter    Sat Jul 26, 09:44 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) is entering the final year of his current contract, but general manager Trent Baalke said the team would like to re-sign him.

Footballguys view: Hunter has talent as a runner and receiver out of the backfield, but injuries have held him back as a pro. The 49ers are stacked at the running back position already, so finding room for Hunter could be difficult. Hunter's career might end up reading "what might have been?" when it's all said and done.

49ers | Kendall Hunter update    Sat Jul 26, 01:18 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) tore his anterior cruciate ligament during the Friday, July 25, practice, according to a source. Hunter will subsequently miss the entire 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Terrible news for a talented player here. Hunter has had trouble staying healthy as a pro, and this latest setback crushes the dynasty value he had. The 49ers will move forward with rookie Carlos Hyde as the primary backup behind Frank Gore. They also have Marcus Lattimore, but he's struggling to come back from the knee injury he suffered in 2012.

The San Francisco 49ers could use one inside linebacker in the base defense and another in the nickel defense while LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is out of the lineup, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. LB Michael Wilhoite has been working with the starting defense during training camp, but LB Chris Borland could also compete for the starting job.

49ers | Bruce Ellington off NFI list    Fri Jul 25, 08:10 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have activated WR Bruce Ellington (ankle) off the Non-Football Injury list.

Footballguys view: Good news for the rookie here. Ellington has the speed and ball-tracking ability to be a deep threat in the NFL. He's currently battling for a reserve spot, and is around the fifth receiver on the depth chart.

49ers | Kendall Hunter injured    Fri Jul 25, 07:10 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) suffered a knee injury during practice Friday, July 25. He was able to walk off the field on his own and did not appear to have a limp.

Footballguys view: Well it seems like the Niners dodged a bullet but that would certainly open things up for most of the rest of the backs, Carlos Hyde specifically. Frank Gore remains the starter here anyway, and we rate him as an RB2. Hunter is the handcuff right now but if an injury occurs, we give the edge to Hyde. As long as Gore is around, there isn't much value in the backup here otherwise.

49ers | Kyle Nelson signed    Fri Jul 25, 05:40 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent LS Kyle Nelson (Redskins) to an undisclosed contract Friday, July 25.

49ers | Stevie Johnson impresses    Fri Jul 25, 11:32 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) looked healthy in Day 1 of training camp. QB Colin Kaepernick raved about Johnson's quickness and deceptiveness that fuel his ability to create separation.

Footballguys view: A fresh start in a new place could be just the thing for Stevie Styles. While he's down in the pecking order behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin, long term he could still have some impact. Short term, unless there is an injury ahead of him, Johnson is still just a WR5/6 - worth a flier but not a reliable option.

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith said he's in the best shape he's ever been in, referring to both his body and mind. Smith admitted he is still growing and is in a better spot than he has been. Smith could still face league discipline following a fake airport bomb threat, a driving under the influence charge and felony weapons charges.

49ers | Bruce Ellington rolls ankle    Thu Jul 24, 02:57 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (ankle) rolled his ankle in football training, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh said he should be back soon.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a talented rookie trying to catch on as a reserve receiver with the team. The 49ers have a stacked depth chart at wide receiver. At this time, Ellington is about fifth on the depth chart.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman running    Thu Jul 24, 02:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is running, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. Bowman will be doing some cutting as the next part of his rehab.

49ers | Aldon Smith and Roger Goodell could meet soon    Thu Jul 24, 01:08 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith is expected to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the near future, which likely would lead to a decision on any discipline for Smith.

Footballguys view: Smith is very likely to be suspended for multiple games. The 49ers defense should be without him and Navorro Bowman to start the season, which makes them a less attractive D/ST play and more attractive matchup - at least one to not automatically avoid until the defense is full strength.

49ers | Stevie Johnson cleared     Wed Jul 23, 04:57 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) passed his physical and has been cleared to practice Thursday, July 23.

Footballguys view: Johnson still has talent, but he's been banged up quite a bit during his pro career. Nothing is guaranteed for Johnson even though the 49ers traded for him earlier this year. He'll have to beat out guys like Brandon Lloyd for a roster spot. Johnson should be the team's WR3 behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.

49ers| Justin Smith feels fully healthy    Wed Jul 23, 04:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith (shoulder) said he is fully healthy entering training camp after offseason shoulder surgery.

Footballguys view: A healthy Smith is a dangerous Smith. The 49ers will be cautious with their star player as they go through training camp.

49ers | Vernon Davis reports    Wed Jul 23, 12:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has reported to camp Wednesday, July 23, according to an Instagram post from 49ers S C.J. Spillman.

Footballguys view: So much for him holding out. Davis is already the 4th-highest paid tight end in the NFL in terms of annual average salary ($7.35 million). The 49ers were unlikely to get him a new deal, so holding out was fruitless.

49ers | Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd not locks to make roster    Tue Jul 22, 11:21 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is the frontrunner for the No. 3 WR job, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, but he added that neither Johnson nor WR Brandon Lloyd is a lock to make the roster. Maiocco believes that Johnson's salary and the fact that Lloyd doesn't contribute on special teams would make them expendable if a younger receiver proves capable of filling the No. 3 WR role.

Footballguys view: We imagine that Johnson will make the final roster. However, Lloyd may have to go back to making direct-to-dvd zombie movies.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore may practice soon    Tue Jul 22, 07:30 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) may be on the practice field sooner rather than later, according to a source. The team is being cautious with Lattimore, but he is reportedly fine.

Footballguys view: We need to see what Lattimore looks like in practice and the preseason before we get too excited about his chances to make an impact in 2014. Lattimore has incredible talent, but coming back from the knee injury (second one in college) suffered in 2012 may be difficult. He'll compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Frank Gore this year.

49ers | LaMichael James may be odd man out at RB    Mon Jul 21, 12:00 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James could have trouble making the roster this year, according to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. Williamson believes RB Frank Gore, RB Carlos Hyde, RB Marcus Lattimore, RB Kendall Hunter and FB Bruce Miller will make the roster.

Footballguys view: James could make the team based on his return ability. He's not going to get many carries if he makes the final roster, but James could catch a few passes as a change-of-pace back.

49ers | LaMichael James top candidate for return jobs    Sat Jul 19, 12:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James will be entering training camp as the leading candidate for the kick and punt return jobs. WR Bruce Ellington, WR Devon Wylie, WR Quinton Patton and CB Perrish Cox are expected to compete with James for the jobs.

Footballguys view: James has to do something to stand out in the league's most crowded backfield. He's buried on the depth chart behind Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and rookie Carlos Hyde (at least). James has little fantasy value--even in dynasty leagues.
