49ers | Interested in Jarryd Hayne     Thu Feb 26, 07:55 AM

Australian rugby player Jarryd Hayne is being looked at by the San Francisco 49ers. It was thought the Detroit Lions had a contract with Hayne as a running back, but a deal was not finalized.

Footballguys view: It was reported earlier that Hayne had signed with the Lions, but that's not the case. The Lions are interested, but no deal has been done. Hayne quit rugby last October to focus on his dream of playing in the NFL. At 220 pounds he has the size--and as a former rugby player he certainly has the toughness to play running back.

  49ers | Ricky Jean-Francois to visit    Wed Feb 25, 12:07 PM

Free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois (Colts) is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The 49ers interest makes a ton of sense. Jean-Francois played under new head coach Jim Tomsula when he was with the team from 2009-2012. The 49ers need a backup plan in case Justin Smith decides to retire.

49ers | Michael Crabtree talks starting    Thu Feb 19, 05:16 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree's representation is engaged in contract negotiations with the team, 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula said at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine. Tomsula and general manager Trent Baalke agreed that re-signing their own talent was a priority.

Footballguys view: Crabtree could be an important piece to the Niners offense heading into next season. Even if they draft a receiver this April, there is no way that person is likely to be able to step in and carry the passing offense. Crabtree won't get top dollar on the open market so he should be reasonably priced for the 49ers to retain him.

49ers | Frank Gore contract talks underway    Thu Feb 19, 05:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore's representation is engaged in contract negotiations with the team, 49ers head coach Jim Tomsula said at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine. Tomsula and 49ers general manager Trent Baalke agreed that re-signing their own talent was a priority.

Footballguys view: Along with Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore is probably one of the more critical pieces to the offense. Gore is definitely aging and his production could fall off at any time, so the contract is likely to be far from extravagant. That said the continuity of having Gore could be a big help with a new coaching staff in town.

49ers | SF begins talks with Michael Crabtree    Thu Feb 19, 05:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree and the team have begun contract talks, according to head coach Jim Tomsula. General manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, Feb. 18, that it's a priority for the 49ers to re-sign their own talent.

Footballguys view: The Niners could really use Crabtree as there isn't a lot of remaining weapons for Colin Kaepernick to utilize. Nobody knows if Frank Gore will be back, or if Vernon Davis will bounce back or if Anquan Boldin will continue to perform as he did last season. They need Crabtree.

49ers | GM to meet with Michael Crabtree's agent    Thu Feb 19, 02:46 AM

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke plans to meet with the agent for free-agent WR Michael Crabtree (49ers) at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Footballguys view: Crabtree is a favorite receiver of Colin Kaepernick, but we think it's 50/50 at best if he comes back in 2015. The team may not want to pay him what Crabtree could get on the open market.

49ers | Patrick Willis, NaVorro Bowman to return on current deals    Wed Feb 18, 08:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers LBs Patrick Willis (toe) and NaVorro Bowman are expected to return next year on their current contracts, general manager Trent Baalke hinted at.

Footballguys view: Willis is scheduled to make $8.315 million, and Bowman will make $5.45 million. Willis continues to rehab his toe after having season-ending surgery and Bowman is over a year removed from a knee injury.

49ers | Vernon Davis will return to SF    Wed Feb 18, 08:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis will return to the team next season, according to general manager Trent Baalke. Davis will make $4.95 million in the final year of his deal, but he's coming off a season in which he had just 26 catches for a measly 245 yards and two touchdowns (both in the season opener). Davis is expected to take part in the team's offseason program after skipping the mandatory minicamp last offseason.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need to do a better job of getting Davis involved in the offense. Last year was an abomination, but he could have a bounce-back year if featured. Using Davis more would likely help keep QB Colin Kaepernick calm under fire.

49ers | Stevie Johnson to start in 2015?    Wed Feb 18, 01:27 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson might be a clear starting candidate for the 2015 season if impending free-agents WR Anquan Boldin and/or WR Michael Crabtree are not brought back. Johnson stands to count a little more than $6 million against the salary cap. It is unknown if the team feels that cost is too steep.

49ers | Michael Crabtree unlikely to return?    Wed Feb 18, 01:26 AM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree was frustrated with his role at the end of last season, and he recently removed any mention of the 49ers from his Twitter bio. Some interpret that as a signal he is ready to move on to a new organization.

49ers | Perrish Cox, Chris Culliver to be retained?    Tue Feb 17, 01:32 PM

49ers | Mike Iupati unlikely for franchise tag    Tue Feb 17, 01:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent OG Mike Iupati is expected to attract plenty of attention on the open market this year. He averaged $3.296 million in his first five NFL seasons, and he's in line for a significant raise. However, it would likely cost the Niners more than $12.5 million to keep him around on a franchise tag, which makes that unlikely. San Fran doesn't want to pay a guard more than an offensive tackle, and they signed OT Anthony Davis to a deal that will pay him $6.5 million on average through the 2019 season. The Niners last used the franchise tag on S Dashon Goldson in 2012.

Footballguys view: A team like the Broncos could show interest in Iupati. He'll be arguably the best guard on the open market.

49ers | Franchise tag not realistic for Crabtree    Tue Feb 17, 01:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent WR Michael Crabtree, who made $4 million last year, is unlikely to receive the franchise tag after his production was disappointing in 2014.

Footballguys view: We could see Crabtree moving on in free agency. The 49ers are also unlikely to offer him a multi-year deal that surpasses that of WR Anquan Boldin's $6 million-a-year average.

  49ers | Frank Gore won't be tagged    Tue Feb 17, 01:15 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore could re-sign with the club, but the Niners have zero interest in using the $10 million-plus franchise tag on an aging running back.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Gore could return, but the team may want to move on with Carlos Hyde as their lead back. Previous reports have stated that Gore wants to go to a contender, and he still believes he could be a starter.

49ers | Frank Gore still uncertain on future    Mon Feb 16, 02:51 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore still isn't sure if team management wants him back for next season. 'If they want to bring me back, they will,' Gore said. 'We'll sit down; see what they want me to do. See what my role is and if I like it, I'll sign. If I don't, I'll try to see what other teams think of me.'

Footballguys view: Gore could go to a team looking for a veteran presence at the position...but his price tag probably won't be that high. He could come back to the 49ers, but it won't be at a big price. The 49ers could easily move forward with Carlos Hyde as their feature back.

  49ers | Adam X. Henry hired    Mon Feb 9, 02:36 AM

LSU receivers coach Adam X. Henry has left the team to take a position with the San Francisco 49ers as a wide receivers coach.

Footballguys view: Hire the guy that has worked with Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry....makes a ton of sense. The 49ers could lose Michael Crabtree in free agency, and that would leave veterans Anquan Boldin and Stevie Johnson to start.

49ers | More read option for Colin Kaepernick?    Tue Feb 3, 04:21 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and the team are expected to return to more of a read-option offense in 2015 under head coach Jim Tomsula in order to take advantage of Kaepernick's running ability. There was a sense in the front offense that SF's offense had become too clunky with too many moving parts. The Niners' new offense will be intended to be simpler and get to the line of scrimmage quickly to put pressure on the defense.

Footballguys view: The 49ers offense needs to do whatever they can to make Kaepernick comfortable. He's one of the most dangerous runners in the league, and the 49ers should just let him get after it as a rusher. That puts a ton of pressure on opposing defenses while also giving Kaepernick easier reads as a passer.

49ers | Tony Sparano good news for Vernon Davis?    Thu Jan 22, 10:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers tight ends coach Tony Sparano tutored Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten in his first two years in the NFL, and ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez believes TE Vernon Davis could benefit from having Sparano as a position coach.

Footballguys view: Davis needs to bounce back in a big way in 2015. His 26 catches were the lowest total since his rookie season of 2006 (20), and his 245 yards receiving were a career low. Basically, anything can help here.

49ers | SF tight end production was awful    Thu Jan 22, 06:18 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis had just two touchdowns in 2014, and they both came in Week 1. He also wasn't targeted at all in the red zone after the opening weekend of the regular season after catching 13 TDs in 2013. San Fran tight ends combined for just 39 catches for 423 yards (10.9 yards per catch) in 2014.

Footballguys view: Awful might be a nice way of putting it. As Charles Barkley would say, Davis was "turrible" in 2014. The Niners and Davis hope that the hiring of Tony Sparano as the new tight ends coach can fix that heading into 2015.

49ers | Marc Trestman a candidate for OC position    Mon Jan 19, 06:30 PM

Former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman has been linked to the offensive coordinator opening for the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Trestman can build a successful offense when he's not shackled with a quarterback like Jay Cutler. Things didn't work out for Trestman as the head coach with the Bears, but he's still has a sharp mind for building offensive football.

49ers | Mike Shanahan may be OC candidate    Sat Jan 17, 02:41 AM

Former head coach Mike Shanahan (Redskins) may be a candidate for the San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator job.

Footballguys view: This is Mike and not Kyle Shanahan. It would be interesting if the senior Shanahan went back to being an offensive coordinator. He won two Super Bowls as the head coach of the Broncos, but his time as Washington's head coach did not turn out well. We thought Shanahan would take some time off then get a head coaching gig, but perhaps he will start back at the coordinator level with his old team. He was the 49ers OC from 1992-94.

49ers | 49ers to promote Jim Tomsula to HC    Wed Jan 14, 05:13 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are set to promote defensive line coach Jim Tomsula to head coach. The two sides are ironing out the details.

Footballguys view: Tomsula leapfrogs defensive coordinator Vic Fangio for the job. He was also the interim coach between Mike Singletary and Jim Harbaugh. This signals that the 49ers don't want to make any major changes and believe their blueprint and personnel are still championship quality after a down year. They were a play away from a Super Bowl title and a play away from a Super Bowl berth from 2011-2013, so that approach seems wise.

49ers | Shayne Skov signed to futures deal    Fri Jan 9, 05:23 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed LB Shayne Skov to a futures contract Friday, Jan. 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Skov is shot out of a cannon as a run-defender, but he lacks the agility and speed to cover at the pro level. He's a two-down thumper only.

49ers | Vernon Davis' spot may be in jeopardy    Fri Jan 9, 02:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis' roster spot for 2015 could be in jeopardy, because he is scheduled to make $4.95 million next season.

Footballguys view: To quote Charles Barkley, Davis was 'turrible' in 2014. His 245 yards receiving represents a career low for the veteran tight end. His two receiving touchdowns ties a career low as well. We're likely to see Davis move on for 2015.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to develop as pocket passer    Fri Jan 9, 01:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has enlisted the help of former QB Kurt Warner this offseason in order to help him develop as a pocket passer. "He's gotten by on athleticism, and he's made some great plays and had some great games. But I think the goal is in the time that I'm going to have with him is just to see where he's at and what he knows about the position and how far we can push the envelope as far as helping him develop as a pocket passer,' Warner said. Kaepernick ranked 20th in the league with a career-low 86.4 passer rating this season.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is a 'pure-sight' thrower. This means he fails to anticipate where receivers are going in their routes and he just throws to a spot. He needs to develop better passing skills or the 49ers are going to move on. Former head coach Jim Harbaugh was a big believer in Kaepernick, but now he's gone to Michigan. Any new coach will have to figure out a way to improve Kaepernick's raw skill set.

49ers | Rex Ryan has 49ers as first choice    Fri Jan 9, 07:35 AM

Free-agent head coach Rex Ryan (Jets) has the San Francisco 49ers atop the list of teams he would like to coach, but it is not known what the 49ers' choice is at the top. Ryan's second choice is the Atlanta Falcons.

Footballguys view: We'll see if the coaching carousel gets going here in a bit. All of the openings are still open at the time we write this update. That's unusual for this point in the NFL postseason.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to train with Kurt Warner    Wed Jan 7, 12:29 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will train in the Phoenix area at EXOS performance where he will study with former NFL QB Kurt Warner and quarterback coach Dennis Gile during the offseason. Warner will work with Kaepernick on film study and 7-on-7 drills.

Footballguys view: This is a positive sign for the young quarterback as he needs all the help he can get. Kaepernick is a pure-sight thrower and currently lacks the anticipation to be an effective pocket passer. We'll see if working with Warner can help.

49ers | Rex Ryan to interview with Niners    Tue Dec 30, 09:56 PM

Updating a previous report, former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan has an interview scheduled with the San Francisco 49ers for their vacant head coaching position. The interview is scheduled for sometime next week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Ryan is going to be one of the hottest--if not the hottest--name for teams to look at as a head coach. Things didn't end well with the Jets, but Ryan will get a chance to prove himself with another team.

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and the organization have agreed to mutually part ways, free-and-clear, meaning no money is owed, he wasn't fired, and he will not be traded.

Footballguys view: This is an unusual arrangement, despite its simplicity. The bottom line is that both parties feel like they'd be better off paired up with someone else. It is widely believed that Harbaugh will take over at his alma mater, Michigan.
