49ers | Paxton Lynch not contacted by 49ers    Thu Apr 28, 05:44 PM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch did not have any contact with the San Francisco 49ers before the NFL draft. A confidant of 49ers head coach Chip Kelly was present at his pro day, however.

Footballguys view: This doesn't mean anything as teams don't always talk to guys they draft, and as the article points out, someone Kelly trusts was there. We don't think they go quarterback, but Lynch could be an interesting fit for the Niners, and the combination of mobility and arm strength would meld well with Kelly's offense.

49ers | Anthony Davis not interested in losing    Wed Apr 27, 10:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers OT Anthony Davis, who announced his retirement but hasn't filed official paperwork with the league, posted on his official Twitter account Wednesday, April 27, that he does not 'want to work with a front office or anyone else who seemingly doesn't want to win as bad as I do.'

Footballguys view: That's an interesting quote. Does he mean that Trent Baalke and company really are as big a mess as we all suspected? Or is this a contract move? The Niners need offensive line help and if they are smart they might want to add offensive line talent early in the draft to fix this offensive line.

49ers | San Fran not interested in Sam Bradford    Wed Apr 27, 12:31 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said 'there's been no talk internally' about trading for Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford. Bradford's agent, Tom Condon, has confirmed that Bradford has requested to be traded. Bradford's former coach, Chip Kelly, is the new 49ers coach.

Footballguys view: Kelly already overpaid for Bradford once in Philadelphia, he is very unlikely to do it again for a team in rebuilding mode. Bradford will either be the bridge to Carson Wentz or a Denver Bronco this year.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not throwing    Wed Apr 27, 12:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is attending the team's voluntary minicamp this week but hasn't resume throwing.

Footballguys view: Perhaps this is part of what is holding up the potential deal between the 49ers and Broncos. Kaepernick did come to the Broncos facility earlier in the offseason, so they might know more about his medical situation than we do.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick trade may still happen    Wed Apr 27, 11:07 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick could still be traded this week, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Footballguys view: This is no surprise, as the draft acts as a "deadline" for teams to make deals because they won't get their compensation until next year if they wait for this year's draft to end before sealing a deal. Teams are also making decisions in the draft based on their current roster, so it is important to square that away during this NFL plate tectonic shift. Kaepernick has been rumored to be a Bronco as long as the 49ers get a quarterback in this draft.

49ers | DeForest Buckner coveted by Niners    Wed Apr 27, 10:39 AM

Oregon DE DeForest Buckner is 'desperately coveted' by the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Buckner is similar to Calais Campbell and he came up through Chip Kelly's Oregon pipeline. If he gets past the Chargers at #3, he is likely to fall to the 49ers.

49ers | Sam Bradford shuns San Francisco     Tue Apr 26, 08:50 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is not interested in playing for the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Chip Kelly, according to NFL Network's Jeff Darlington.

Footballguys view: It shouldn't come as any surprise that Bradford (who played under Kelly with the Eagles) would not want to be reunited in San Francisco. Bradford is upset because the Eagles moved up to the No.2 pick for a QB in the 2016 NFL draft. He's reportedly demanding a trade, but so far there have been no takers.

49ers | Darius Powe has strong showing for SF    Mon Apr 25, 02:49 AM

University of California WR Darius Powe had a strong showing, according to a source, when the team worked out Cal QB Jared Goff.

Footballguys view: Kenny Lawler and Trevor Davis are the two Cal WRs to keep an eye on in the NFL draft. Both should be mid-round picks with varying upside. Powe is likely to be an undrafted free agent, but it sounds like the 49ers might be willing to take a chance on him.

49ers | Niners have visited two wideouts    Mon Apr 25, 02:48 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have had official visits with Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell and Texas Christian University WR Kolby Listenbee.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is the player to watch here. We like his route-running ability and savvy when coming back to the quarterback. He's tough when going over the middle, and Mitchell has the ball-tracking ability to be used effectively on deep shots. Listenbee should go off the board a bit later than Mitchell. He's a deep receiver who can take the top off the defense in a hurry.

49ers | SF has shown interest in Pharoh Cooper    Mon Apr 25, 02:47 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have shown an interest in South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper, and his skills in the return game could make him a factor from Day 1 if the team adds him in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Cooper is a wide receiver, but he's got the open-field running ability of a running back. He can make defenders miss in the open field, but he's also willing to run through arm tackles if need be. He didn't run a full route tree at South Carolina, and Cooper is best suited to run intermediate routes where his run-after-the-catch ability can be properly utilized.

49ers | Will get extended look at Eric Rogers    Mon Apr 25, 02:42 AM

The San Francisco 49ers coaching staff will get its first good look at WR Eric Rogers this week.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are looking everywhere for help at the WR position. Rogers was signed January after posting 87 receptions, 1,448 yards and 10 touchdowns in 17 games for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

49ers | Anquan Boldin could return to 49ers    Sun Apr 24, 01:38 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) could be sought back by the San Francisco 49ers if head coach Chip Kelly is unimpressed with the wide receivers' performances this week at minicamp.

Footballguys view: Boldin is not the same player he used to be, but he can at least give a team veteran depth. In 14 games last year with the 49ers, Boldin caught 69 passes for 789 yards and four touchdowns. That ranked him as the 43rd fantasy WR in 2015 in standard-scoring leagues. We can't see his numbers getting much better in 2016 if he's retained by the 49ers.

49ers | San Francisco met with Kenneth Dixon    Fri Apr 22, 07:55 PM

Louisiana Tech RB Kenneth Dixon recently met with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Dixon is an explosive back who can make defenders miss in the open field. While not the biggest back, Dixon is willing to grind it out between the tackles for tough yards. He's likely a second- or third-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

49ers | San Francisco frontrunner for Josh Norman?    Thu Apr 21, 02:55 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is drawing plenty of interest, and according to sources the San Francisco 49ers are expected to be the early frontrunner for his services.

Footballguys view: Norman played very well last year and has always been good, so it's just a matter of figuring out how much money it will cost to get him.

49ers | No timeline for Ian Williams    Wed Apr 20, 11:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Ian Williams (ankle) had offseason ankle surgery, and general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, April 20, that he did not have a timeline on when Williams would be ready to play. 'Still underdetermined,' Baalke said. 'But he's making very good progress.'

Footballguys view: Another guy the Niners would love to have back, especially since he is outstanding against the run.

49ers | Glenn Dorsey making progress    Wed Apr 20, 11:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Glenn Dorsey (knee) is making 'great progress,' according to general manager Trent Baalke, as the defensive tackle makes his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. However, it is too soon to say if he'll be ready for the regular season opener. 'I'm never going to give a definitive because you don't know,' Baalke said. 'You could always have a setback, but right now he's made great progress. Looks good.'

Footballguys view: The Niners could use the help defensively, but they won't push him and risk setting him back. If he can do some work during camp, that will be a good sign, but we are guessing the Niners will plan not to have him for a chunk of the season, just in case.

49ers | GM texting with Anthony Davis    Wed Apr 20, 11:08 PM

Retired OT Anthony Davis and San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke have not had any in-person discussion, although the two have exchanged text messages. Davis has not yet applied for reinstatement after retiring from the league last year. 'I'm not going to get into our conversations within the media,' Baalke said. 'We've had several text messages back and forth and that's the extent of the conversations.'

Footballguys view: Maybe Baalke is just looking for dinner ideas around Santa Clara. Davis has been out for a year but planned to come back for 2016. We're still waiting for him to apply for reinstatement though so we're not sure what he intends right now.

49ers | Eric Reid will return in 2017    Wed Apr 20, 11:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers FS Eric Reid will either have his fifth-year option picked up, or he will be signed to an extension, general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, April 20. 'We're definitely looking at both options,' Baalke said. 'If we could get something done longer, we'll look at that.'

Footballguys view: It's a good move for a team which saw the departure of a lot of vets during 2015's off season. Reid will continue to bring consistency to the secondary for the Niners.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could still be traded    Wed Apr 20, 04:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick may still be traded this offseason, according to general manager Treny Baalke. Baalke said he would never say never in regards to a trade, but he does not want to package Kaepernick as part of a trade. Baalke added that the 49ers still want Kaepernick on the roster, but he has not completely ruled out trading the quarterback.

Footballguys view: So really we've just learned nothing new, but at least Baalke was creative in the way he said that nothing. We still think it's possible Kaepernick lands with the Broncos, and we still think he could be successful either with the Niners or another team. But it seems like the situation remains fluid and cloudy (or made up of cloudy fluid) for now.

  49ers | Jared Goff meeting with 49ers    Mon Apr 18, 01:07 PM

California QB Jared Goff is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, April 18, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The 49ers may have to move up if they want one of the top two QBs in this draft class. Goff could be the Rams pick at no.1 overall, but if not then we think Cleveland would fall all over themselves to draft him with the 2nd-overall pick. The 49ers have the 7th-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

49ers | Muhammad Wilkerson the San Fran treat?    Fri Apr 15, 01:08 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson would love to play for the San Francisco 49ers, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson has a $15.7 million one-year tender as the Jets franchise-tagged player this offseason. The team has put him on the trade block as they've shown little interest in signing Wilkerson to the long-term deal he wants. The 49ers have a ton of cap space and could easily accommodate a contract the size that Wilkerson desires.

49ers | Chip Kelly likes Blaine Gabbert    Thu Apr 14, 04:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert could be a reclamation project of new head coach Chip Kelly this season.

Footballguys view: Kelly is supposedly more attracted to the idea of making Gabbert better than drafting a quarterback, according to CBSSports.com's Jason La Canfora. We'll see what the team does in the draft and whether or not they finally trade away Colin Kaepernick.

49ers | San Fran hosting top QBs    Mon Apr 11, 02:06 PM

California QB Jared Goff, North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz and Michigan State QB Connor Cook will visit with the San Francisco 49ers this week. The Niners have the seventh overall draft pick this year and are believed to be interested in trading up. Cook will also meet with the Chicago Bears this week.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are likely to be in the market for a QB, especially if (when?) they trade away Colin Kaepernick. With the 7th-overall pick, guys like Wentz and Goff may already be off the board. They may have to move up if they want one of the top two passers coming into the NFL draft.

  49ers | Carson Wentz visits 49ers    Mon Apr 11, 09:26 AM

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz visited with the San Francisco 49ers recently.

Footballguys view: Unless the 49ers move up in the draft, Wentz is going to be gone by the time their 7th-overall pick comes up.

49ers | Carlos Hyde feels great    Wed Apr 6, 08:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (foot) is back to full strength and said his foot is 'feeling great.' Hyde played in just seven games in 2015 and had surgery late in December. He also slimmed down to 225 pounds this offseason, which is a seven-pound difference from the start of last year. Hyde compares new head coach Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense to something similar he played in at Ohio State in college.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has a $400,000 offseason workout bonus due Monday, April 4, for 90% attendance.

Footballguys view: He may not show up depending on the status of a possible trade with the Denver Broncos. We'll see if the two sides can come together on compensation...plus, we'll see if Kaepernick agrees to a restructured contract to help facilitate the trade.

  49ers | Colin Kaepernick's salary guaranteed    Thu Mar 31, 04:14 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was not released prior to the deadline Thursday, March 31, and Kaepernick's $11.9 million will now be fully guaranteed for 2016. Kaepernick could still be traded, however, especially as the NFL Draft nears.

Footballguys view: We'll have to see how this works. The trade isn't dead but it's looked better and is on life support. If traded, he would have to agree to restructuring the contract, if that is possible. He has no reason to, though, and now there is no point in dropping him since you are paying him regardless. Did the Niners just price themselves out of getting value for him? Does Chip Kelly really see Kaepernick in a significant role in San Francisco? Can the Broncos find cap room? We're anxious to find out.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick won't be released before his April 1 deadline when his $11.9 million salary becomes guaranteed.

Footballguys view: We keep hearing this, so maybe they're serious. We still think they are just trying to drive the price up on him with Denver.

49ers | Josh McCown an option for Niners    Wed Mar 30, 02:25 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Josh McCown is an option for the San Francisco 49ers if they part ways with QB Colin Kaepernick. 49ers quarterbacks coach Kevin O'Connell, who worked with McCown in Cleveland, would like to work with him again.

Footballguys view: McCown is the wild card for teams like Denver and the Jets too, with both of them waiting to see how other actors like Colin Kaepernick, Ryan Fitzpatrick, and Trent Baalke handle their upcoming decisions. McCown should start somewhere on opening weekend, and the least likely place is Cleveland. McCown was actually a solid streamer last year and he should be a consideration for QB streamers again in 2016.

49ers | Jared Goff working out with 49ers    Wed Mar 30, 10:51 AM

California QB Jared Goff is working out for the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, March 30.

Footballguys view: Goff has the decision-making and accuracy to fit in Chip Kelly's offense, and keeping him in the Bay Area can't hurt. If the Browns don't take Goff, he'll likely be there for the 49ers, unless the Cowboys surprise and attempt to get their next franchise quarterback.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick staying with team    Mon Mar 28, 07:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will remain with the 49ers. The team would fully guarantee his 2016 base salary now if he commits to being the team's starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: I don't think anyone can say with 100 percent certainty what's going to happen here. Yes, with $11.9 million coming his way no matter what the April 1st deadline means nothing now. Kaepernick is going to get paid, and it makes sense for the 49ers to just keep him if they're on the hook for the bill. Perhaps something happens around the draft, but at this point it seems like Kaepernick is staying.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to be paid even if cut?    Sun Mar 27, 09:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick could still receive his $11.9 million salary for 2016, even if he is cut before April 1.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick has had three offseason surgeries, and if a player is cut while injured, their salary becomes guaranteed. Kaepernick would have to pass a physical prior to April 1 for San Francisco to cut him and avoid paying his 2016 salary. The 49ers may just end up keeping him since it looks like they're on the hook for his 2016 salary.

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) hasn't had contract discussions with the San Francisco 49ers yet this offseason.

Footballguys view: It just seems like the 49ers are going to move on. Boldin wants to play for a contender, and the 49ers are certainly in more of a rebuilding phase.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert in the mix    Fri Mar 25, 12:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert's size and skill set impressed head coach Chip Kelly, who said Gabbert would be in competition with QB Colin Kaepernick to start. 'He's big,' Kelly said. 'I'd never really dealt with Blaine because he came into the league before I came into the league, but just how big and physical and impressive he is. He's a 6-4, 245-pound guy that can really run. I thought the last part of the season he played really well. It'll be intriguing to work with him, too.'

Footballguys view: Gabbert showed last year that he's still got something left after his career flamed out in Jacksonville. The 49ers should have a few changes coming at the QB position this offseason. We think they'll be in the running for a QB early in the draft, and they could end up trading away Kaepernick in the next week. Gabbert will be in the mix, but he doesn't seem to be a long-term solution for the team.

49ers | Carlos Hyde slimming up    Thu Mar 24, 12:22 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is working to slim down this offseason in order to be in shape for new head coach Chip Kelly's up-tempo offense. Hyde's trainer, David Alexander, said he wants Hyde to get down to 220 pounds without losing his power. Hyde is listed at 235 pounds and is now under 230 pounds. He is preparing to see the bulk of the workload in 2016.

Footballguys view: An injury-shortened season hurt 2015 for Hyde but he still has the upside to be a solid fantasy back. A versatile, powerful back, he could carry the load and we think less weight might help him stay healthier.

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (foot) appears to be fully recovered from foot surgery. His agent posted a video of Hyde and RB Bruce Ellington going through drills and each played looks ready for the team's offseason program starting April 4.

Footballguys view: Good news for Hyde here. What's potentially bad news is the 49ers may add a RB to the mix to compete for the starting job. In Kelly's system, a back like Hyde could be successful but the team is wise to add other pieces at the position if they can.

  49ers | SF won't release Colin Kaepernick    Thu Mar 17, 03:59 PM

The San Francisco 49ers don't have any plans to release QB Colin Kaepernick before April 1 when his $11.9 million salary becomes fully guaranteed, as trade talks have gone cold over the past week. 'There's a good chance he's still on the team the way things look now,' a source said. The Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets haven't shown much urgency of late to acquire Kaepernick.

Footballguys view: In this game of chicken, it looks like the Broncos, Browns and Jets won't blink. The Niners can say they won't cut him, but you can bet none of the above teams believe it. And really, they can trade for him later and renegotiate the contract anyway. We're not sure what Chip Kelly will do with Kaepernick and if he really has a shot to win the starting job though we think he could be a solid fit in the offense.
