49ers | Cole Hikutini eyeing roster spot and more Thu Jun 22, 10:46 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE Cole Hikutini has a legitimate chance to make the 53-man roster, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee, and Barrows believes Hikutini could climb up the depth chart if his knee is fully healthy.
|Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Louisville in 2017, Hikutini was a safety-valve receiver for star quarterback Lamar Jackson in college. Hikutini is a move tight end with the 'my ball' mentality and athleticism that makes him stand out. He's not a blocker, so his role will have to be limited to certain situations. Pick him up in super deep dynasty leagues and watch him develop.|

49ers | DeForest Buckner probably will see less snaps Mon Jun 19, 08:07 PM
San Francisco 49ers DE DeForest Buckner played 1,005 snaps in 2016, but defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said he would like to see Buckner play around 500 to 600 snaps this season to make sure he can make an impact when he is on the field. Buckner said he was tired at times last season but would not be taken out of the game.
|Footballguys view: Buckner should be more effective with fewer snaps...at least that's what his coaches are counting on. A first-round pick in 2016, Buckner had 6.0 sacks last year and could easily match or best that number this year even with fewer snaps.|

49ers | George Kittle make good first impression Sat Jun 17, 11:15 AM
San Francisco 49ers fifth-round TE George Kittle was the team's most prolific target during the recent minicamp and drew praise from QB Brian Hoyer for his football awareness and intelligence.
|Footballguys view: At 6'4" 250 pounds, Kittle has good athleticism and the speed to attack the deep middle seam. He's a move tight end/H-back type, but Kittle is also a sound blocker. It's not the best role for him, but he's willing to block and plays with good effort and technique.|
49ers | Trent Taylor as advertised Sat Jun 17, 11:03 AM
San Francisco 49ers fifth-round WR Trent Taylor has been sure-handed in early workouts and 'very good at shaking free of coverage with a quick, up-field step as soon as the ball arrived,' according the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.
|Footballguys view: That sounds about right. In college at Louisiana Tech, Taylor's game was all about shake and bake and creating separation. He rarely drops a pass and seems to toy with defenders on underneath routes. Taylor is competing for a roster spot and is no lock to make the 53-man roster as a rookie. However, if he one day develops into a Taylor Gabriel-like weapon for 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan we won't be surprised.|
49ers | Trent Taylor making strong impression Thu Jun 15, 09:37 PM
San Francisco 49ers WR Trent Taylor has been 'very good at separating' from defenders, according to head coach Mike Shanahan, and Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee believes Taylor could return punts and eventually challenge WR Jeremy Kerley for the slot receiver role.
|Footballguys view: Taylor is small (5'8" 181 pounds) but he's tough and quick. He was heavily targeted in college at Louisiana Tech, and Taylor has great instincts when it comes to getting open. Watch him in dynasty leagues.|
Jeremy Kerley player page
49ers | George Kittle standing out Thu Jun 15, 09:34 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle received the most first-team reps of any rookie during OTAs and has 'really good football awareness,' according to quarterback Brian Hoyer.
|Footballguys view: Coming out of Iowa, Kittle reminded many in the scouting community of Charles Clay (Bills). Like Clay, Kittle is an H-back type who can be relied on for yards after the catch. Kittle is currently fourth on the depth chart but keep an eye on his progress in camp if you play in dynasty leagues.|

49ers | C.J. Beathard picking up system Thu Jun 15, 09:30 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard hasn't been afraid to make quick, aggressive decisions, according to quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello. 'He trusted his skill set to attack when needed, and he wasn't afraid to,' Scangarello said.
|Footballguys view: Beathard should work well in the Kyle Shahanah offense. The rookie from Iowa has a good arm and throws a pretty deep pass. He needs to improve on short passing accuracy if he wants to develop as a pro.|
49ers | Matt Breida proving effective as receiver Thu Jun 15, 09:27 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida has been effective as a receiver out of the backfield this spring, taking short passes and turning them into big gains.
|Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this 49ers RB situation. In a Kyle Shanahan offense, the lead back can be quite productive. Breida is buried on the depth chart right now, but RB coach Bobby Turner has a history of turning late-round picks into solid pros. Breida was undrafted out of Georgia Southern and the 49ers made him one of the highest paid UDFAs this year. He's a playmaker worth monitoring in dynasty leagues.|
49ers | Reuben Foster should be ready for camp Wed Jun 14, 03:12 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) should be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.
|Footballguys view: Foster was one of the most fearsome linebackers in college football last year. He arrives at the ball with natural violence and plays a bit like Patrick Willis used to for the 49ers.|
49ers | C.J. Beathard signs rookie deal Tue Jun 13, 04:20 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard signed his four-year rookie deal Tuesday, June 13. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Beathard is with a QB guru in new head coach Kyle Shanahan. The rookie from Iowa has a beautiful deep pass (think Jeff Blake) and is not afraid to push the ball downfield. He needs to work on timing, pass placement and intermediate accuracy if he wants to be considered more than a developmental quarterback for the 49ers.|
49ers | Reuben Foster signs contract Fri Jun 9, 04:46 PM
San Francisco 49ers first-round draft choice LB Reuben Foster signed his four-year contract Friday, June 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Foster could have been a top-5 pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Instead, injury and off field concerns caused him to fall to the end of the first round. When healthy, Foster has incredible violence on the football field. He destroys ball-carriers in his path and can be one of the most intimidating players on defense. The rookie from Alabama is still healing from a shoulder injury that required surgery.|
49ers | Two roster moves for San Francisco Fri Jun 9, 03:42 PM

49ers | Elvis Dumervil joining 49ers Mon Jun 5, 02:19 PM
Free-agent LB Elvis Dumervil (Ravens) agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, June 5. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.
|Footballguys view: Dumervil was slowed by injury in 2016 and only registered 3.0 sacks in eight games. He should move back to DE in the 49ers 4-3 defense. Dumervil is not quite the player he used to be, but if healthy he could bring some heat from the edge.|

49ers | Kyle Shanahan impressed with NaVorro Bowman Sun Jun 4, 12:44 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') hasn't missed any of the current OTA sessions and has impressed head coach Kyle Shanahan with his quick recovery from an Achilles' tear
|Footballguys view: Shanahan may be impressed with Bowman's recovery, but some 49ers beat writers have been reporting that the veteran linebacker has been struggling. Beat writer Grant Cohn believes Bowman will be cut. The 49ers have around $70 million in cap space right now, and they could easily swallow the massive $14.6 million remaining in dead money on Bowman's deal. The team drafted his replacement when they selected LB Reuben Foster in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft.|

Free-agent LB Elvis Dumervil (Ravens) has a workout scheduled in the next couple days with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: He was released by the Ravens in March, and this is the first time a team has showed public interest. If healthy (only played eight games in 2016), Dumervil could be worked in as a part-time pass-rusher.|

49ers | Brian Hoyer feels comfortable Mon May 29, 05:44 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is confident heading into his second stint with head coach Kyle Shanahan. Shanahan was the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator in 2014 when Hoyer quarterbacked the Browns.
|Footballguys view: That comfort level could put him atop the depth chart when the regular season begins. Hoyer said his familiarity with Shanahan's offense makes it easier for him to call plays, adding that it comes naturally to him now. He's competing with Matt Barkley for the team's starting job in 2017. Rookie C.J. Beathard is on board as a developmental prospect.|

49ers | Reuben Foster doing some drills at OTAs Mon May 29, 03:11 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) participated in individual drills during the first week of organized team activities. Foster will continue to practice without contact, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, as he recovers from a torn rotator cuff.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers will monitor their first-round pick (one of them) carefully. Foster could easily be their new Patrick Willis if healthy. He arrives at the ball with natural violence and was one of the most intimidating players in all of college football. Mild character concerns and this shoulder injury caused his draft stock to fall. In terms of talent, Foster could have easily been a top-10 pick in the 2017 NFL draft.|
49ers | Kyle Shanahan to split offensive duties Mon May 29, 03:42 AM
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan will also serve as offensive coordinator, but he plans on splitting duties between several assistants.
|Footballguys view: That's wise for the first-time head coach as he doesn't want to spread himself too thin. Mike McDaniel will be in charge of the ground game, and Mike LaFleur will oversee the passing attack. Bobby Turner will serve as running backs coach. Shanahan has a great group of coaches around him.|
49ers | NaVorro Bowman returning to form Sat May 27, 10:12 PM

49ers | Vance McDonald could be cut Tue May 23, 01:03 AM
San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald is a candidate to be cut, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. He said it 'wouldn't be a surprise' if McDonald didn't make the 53-man roster.
|Footballguys view: Keep this in mind if you have dynasty stock in Blake Bell or if you selected George Kittle in your 2017 rookie drafts. The former regime signed McDonald to a five-year, $35-million extension last December. There is a potential out on his contract, but not until after the 2017 season. McDonald still has $7.7 million remaining in dead money on his contract.|

49ers | Cole Hikutini a good fit in San Francisco Fri May 19, 11:57 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE Cole Hikutini is a good fit for the offense and is the type of player head coach Kyle Shanahan is looking for in a tight end, according to vice president of player personnel Adam Peters.
|Footballguys view: Shanahan's system is known to be TE friendly, so any player at the position working under him is an intriguing prospect. They don't have much at the position behind Vance McDonald, so we'll be monitoring Hikutini in deep dynasty leagues. He was a pure pass-catching weapon during his college days at Louisville and will have to likely shine on special teams just to make the 53-man roster.|
49ers | Ran Carthon added to San Fran's front office Fri May 19, 02:07 PM

49ers | Joe Williams has chance to start in 2017 Wed May 17, 01:46 PM
San Francisco 49ers fourth-round pick RB Joe Williams has a 'legitimate chance' to 'immediately unseat' RB Carlos Hyde as the team's top running back this season, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers new regime doesn't seem to be enamored with Hyde at all. He's in the final year of his contract, but the 49ers may move him behind Williams on the depth chart. Williams is a runner who can create space for himself in a variety of ways. He's got burst to and through the hole, and he can make defenders miss in the open field. Williams is not a third-down back, but he can lead the way in a RBBC as the featured runner.|

49ers | Ahkello Witherspoon signs deal Fri May 12, 05:11 PM

49ers | NaVorro Bowman not being shopped Thu May 11, 01:48 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') is not on the trading block, contrary to reports. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan released a joint statement Thursday, May 11, that made it clear Bowman has been a 'consummate professional' and they are excited for him to return to the field this year.
|Footballguys view: Contradicting some earlier reports, it seems like Bowman will remain a Niner. Of course, the team could just be covering it's collective rear end because they couldn't get interest and now need him happy as he's stuck there.|

49ers | Two 49ers linebackers ahead of schedule Tue May 9, 02:45 PM
San Francisco 49ers LBs Reuben Foster (shoulder) and NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') are ahead of schedule in their rehabilitation. Foster is expected to be on the field for the start of training camp, according to general manager John Lynch.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers selected Foster in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft even though he was recovering from shoulder surgery. There were reports that he may need another surgery on the shoulder, but if he's going to be ready for training camp then that's not the case. When healthy, Foster could play like Patrick Willis for the 49ers defense.|

49ers | BJ Johnson signed by 49ers Mon May 8, 04:20 PM
Undrafted free-agent WR BJ Johnson (Georgia Southern) was signed by the San Francisco 49ers Monday, May 8.
|Footballguys view: Johnson played in 44 games with the Eagles (35 starts) and registered 92 receptions for 1,377 yards and six touchdowns. He was used as a deep receiver, and Johnson showed the ability to concentrate with coverage all over him. Johnson works his way back to the ball and can work the sidelines with consistency. He's a longshot to make the 53-man roster, but in super deep dynasty leagues we're watching.|
49ers | DuJuan Harris released Mon May 8, 02:08 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB DuJuan Harris was released Monday, May 8.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers are jam packed at the RB position after trading the Broncos for Kapri Bibbs and selecting Joe Williams (Utah) in the 2017 NFL draft. Some team looking for a slashing pass catching back may look at Harris.|

49ers | K.D. Cannon cut Sun May 7, 01:56 PM
San Francisco 49ers WR KD Cannon has reportedly been released less than a week after signing as a priority undrafted free-agent.
|Footballguys view: That didn't last long. Cannon has one thing to his game - speed. He's not physical at the catch point, and Cannon drops too many passes. He should get a look from another team before or during training camp.|
49ers | Joe Williams confident, motivated Sat May 6, 12:05 AM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams said he feels like he was the best running back available in the 2017 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: After 'retiring' from football for a month in 2016, Williams returned to the Utes lineup and dominated. Williams finished the year as a top-20 RB in the nation with 1,420 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns in nine contests. A plus athlete, Williams can create on his own in various ways. The Kyle Shanahan system is incredibly RB friendly, so Williams is a name all fantasy owners need to monitor. He'll compete with Carlos Hyde (who is in a contract year) for the top spot with the 49ers.|
49ers | Aaron Lynch in danger of being cut? Fri May 5, 09:25 PM

49ers | 49ers ink five rookies to contracts Thu May 4, 07:24 PM
The San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with fifth-round TE George Kittle, fifth-round WR Trent Taylor, sixth-round DL Pita Taumoepenu, sixth-round DL D.J. Jones and seventh-round S Adrian Colbert on their four-year rookie deals Thursday, May 4.
|Footballguys view: It's a Kyle Shanahan offense, so we're going to be monitoring any tight end on the roster as this is known to be a TE-friendly system. Kittle is a player to watch and drew comparisons to Charles Clay (Bills) in the pre-draft process.|
49ers | Reuben Foster had concussions Thu May 4, 03:30 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (concussion) suffered multiple concussions during his time at the University of Alabama and there was concern in regards to his recovery time.
|Footballguys view: This should be a concern for everyone as most players coming out of college have been hit enough to worry about it. Foster should be fine, but the Niners will want to watch it long term. They felt good enough to take him near the end of the first round in the 2017 NFL draft.|
49ers | Mike Davis released Thu May 4, 02:27 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Mike Davis was released Thursday, May 4, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: Davis had a bit of hype surrounding him coming out of South Carolina in 2015. A fourth-round pick that year, Davis leaves San Francisco with only 108 yards rushing in two years combined. He may struggle to find work, and if/when he does it's not like we'll expect him to play up to the potential he showed with the Gamecocks years ago.|

49ers | SF comfortable with Reuben Foster's shoulder Wed May 3, 03:32 PM
The San Francisco 49ers were comfortable with drafting LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) even though he is recovering from shoulder surgery, but the team doctors understand the shoulder could be a risk during his rookie season, according to sources.
|Footballguys view: Foster has a game similar to that of former 49ers great Patrick Willis. If healthy, he can make an immediate impact and has All-Pro upside for a decade. Several teams did not consider taking Foster during the draft because of his shoulder.|

49ers | Coach high on C.J. Beathard Mon May 1, 08:01 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard was the only quarterback head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted in the 2017 NFL Draft. Shanahan said Beathard reminds him of Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins.
|Footballguys view: There's quite a few things to like about Beathard. His deep passes may be some of the prettiest and most accurate of any quarterback in this draft class. Beathard is going to get some time to develop, but we're watching him closely in deep dynasty leagues.|
