49ers | Vance McDonald back at practice    Thu Sep 29, 03:23 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald (hip) is participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 29.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't trot McDonald out there, and your best tight end bet in this offense is Garrett Celek as a low-end TE2.

49ers | Torrey Smith should be fine    Wed Sep 28, 02:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith (ankle) suffered an apparent ankle injury during the team's Week 3 game, but head coach Chip Kelly said Smith will be fine.

Footballguys view: Smith will be fine, but fantasy owners aren't going to trust Smith in the lineup. He's a WR4 at best this week against the Cowboys.

49ers | Vance McDonald may miss time    Wed Sep 28, 02:31 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald's (hip) status for Week 4 is uncertain because of a hip injury he suffered in Week 3. Head coach Chip Kelly said McDonald is not dealing with a long-term injury, but his status will not be known until later in the week.

Footballguys view: Garrett Celek and Blake Bell are the two behind McDonald on the depth chart. Bell, a converted QB from Oklahoma who has only played one year at TE, has the athleticism to make plays after the catch. Celek may get first crack at the starting job, but Bell is the player we'd be more excited about...but only in deep dynasty leagues.

49ers | Keshawn Martin may be returner    Wed Sep 28, 02:28 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Keshawn Martin is expected to be used as a kick and punt returner.

Footballguys view: That's why the team signed him. He'll do little to nothing as a receiver and Martin has no fantasy value.

Free-agent WR Keshawn Martin (Patriots) signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Sept. 27. Financial terms were not disclosed.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert remains the starter    Tue Sep 27, 09:39 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert will remain the starting quarterback, in part, because he's better in practice than QB Colin Kaepernick.

Footballguys view: For now. Gabbert is better in practice, but he may not be better in games. There are other QBs in NFL history that struggled in practice (Chad Pennington, Tim Tebow) but found ways to make plays in games. Kaepernick could be fantasy relevant as (on paper) he looks like a good fit for the Chip Kelly system. A running QB like Kaepernick could easily be a starter for fantasy owners -- especially as we work through the bye-week gauntlet. Stay tuned.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) may reclaim his starting job once he's back to full health, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: This should come as no surprise. Blaine Gabbert has struggled as the team's starter, and (on paper at least) Kaepernick seems like a good fit for the Kelly system. We could see a change at QB for the 49ers in the near future.

49ers | Carlos Hyde unhappy with Week 2 effort    Mon Sep 19, 12:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde believes a lack of patience contributed heavily to a 14-carry, 34-yard performance in a loss to the Carolina Panthers in Week 2. Hyde also lost the fumble early, which led to Carolina's first touchdown.

Footballguys view: Hyde had a disappointing Week 2 after a strong Week 1 performance. He should be able to bounce back as few teams have a front seven on defense like the Panthers. We consider Hyde a RB2 for fantasy owners going forward.

San Francisco 49ers WR Jeremy Kerley played 54 of 81 offensive snaps and led the team with 11 targets in Week 1 against the Los Angeles Rams.

Footballguys view: Kerley was the focus of the passing game early in the win over the Rams. He could be a nice PPR bench depth player as a frequent target in a high volume offense.

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald posted a pair of receptions with 14 yards and a touchdown in the Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams.
