49ers | Colin Kaepernick cleared for camp    Tue Jul 26, 08:23 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has received medical clearance to participate fully in training camp, according to a source. Kaepernick had a torn left labrum repaired this offseason in addition to surgery on his right thumb and left knee.

Footballguys view: Three surgeries this offseason kept Kaepernick out of action during minicamp and OTAs. He also lost some weight that he'll need to put back on in order to take the NFL beating most QBs endure. Blaine Gabbert is his primary competition, and we'll have to see how Kaepernick fits into the Chip Kelly system. On paper, it seems like a good fit for the veteran QB...but we want to see it on the field before we get too interested.

49ers | SF wants to keep Anthony Davis    Tue Jul 26, 02:09 AM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers OT Anthony Davis applied for reinstatement Monday, July 25, and the sense is that the team is interested in keeping him, not trading him.

Retired OT Anthony Davis said he applied for reinstatement to the NFL Monday, July 25.

49ers | Michael Wilhoite has chance to start    Fri Jul 22, 07:51 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Michael Wilhoite probably will enter training camp as the leading candidate for one of the inside linebacker jobs but will have to compete with LBs Gerald Hodges and Ray Ray Armstrong for the job. All three players could receive playing time during the season depending on the opponent.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have competition for starting spots all over their roster, which isn't a great sign on a roster bereft of proven talent. The defense has plummeted since being comparable to the Seahawks a few short years ago.

49ers | Two candidates for 49ers center job    Fri Jul 22, 06:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers C Daniel Kilgore is the leading candidate for the starting center job, but he will have to compete with C Marcus Martin for the job during training camp.

49ers | Josh Garnett to work at both OG spots    Fri Jul 22, 06:23 PM

San Francisco 49ers OG Josh Garnett is expected to receive snaps at left guard and right guard during training camp and will push for one of the starting guard jobs.

Footballguys view: Garnett is a mauling physical run blocker, but he has some work to do in the passing game. He should help Carlos Hyde, at least for as long as the 49ers hang in games in any given week.

49ers | Tank Carradine may be pass-rush specialist    Fri Jul 22, 04:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Tank Carradine likely will be used as a pass-rush specialist this season when the team is in their nickel package. There is a chance that he could be in the starting lineup because of LB Aaron Lynch's suspension.

Footballguys view: Lynch is one of the best players on the 49ers defense and clearly their best pass rusher. If Carradine doesn't take a big step forward this year, the lowly 49ers will have even more trouble putting resistance to opposing passing games with an inexperienced secondary and feeble pass rush.

49ers | Anthony Davis' status uncertain    Fri Jul 22, 03:11 PM

Retired OT Anthony Davis' representatives will not say if Davis will file for reinstatement and play for the San Francisco 49ers in 2016.

Footballguys view: Davis seems to want to play again, but his enthusiasm about joining the 49ers is lukewarm. He has criticized the team publicly. If he does apply for reinstatement, it's hard to imagine him being a starter for the 49ers, but it is also hard to imagine the front office he called out working hard to find him a new home unless there's a team out there that suffers a key offensive line injury and finds themselves desperate. Chances are we won't see Davis in 2016.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert praised by Jerry Rice    Fri Jul 22, 12:36 PM

Former San Francisco 49ers WR Jerry Rice praised QB Blaine Gabbert, who will be competing for the starting quarterback job with QB Colin Kaepernick in training camp. 'I had an opportunity to meet him, and you can just tell the confidence. He feels he has a legitimate chance of being the starter. Then you got Colin Kaepernick, and I don't know if they're gonna be able to, you know, that offense of Chip Kelly because he likes to get over the ball, he likes constant movement and all of that,' Rice said.

Footballguys view: Nick Foles wasn't thought of much more highly than Gabbert is right now before he was a stud QB1 during his first season under Chip Kelly. Gabbert doesn't have Foles' supporting cast, but he does have a terrible team that will put him in catchup game scripts all year. We wouldn't draft Gabbert, but he could be a nice cheap DFS play for some matchups and part of a streaming quarterback approach, assuming he holds off Kaepernick.

49ers | WR corps inexperienced in San Fran    Thu Jul 21, 02:25 AM

San Francisco 49ers Torrey Smith is one of just three receivers with more than 40 career receptions heading into the 2016 season. WRs Jerome Simpson (150) and Quinton Patton (56) are the others. Simpson and Patton will be in the mix to serve as the No. 2 receiver opposite Smith.

Footballguys view: Things look foggy for the offense in San Francisco. Unless something shakes it up, there are certainly cracks in the passing offense, experience (or lack thereof) being one of them. Add in that Blaine Gabbert or Colin Kaepernick are San Andreas size flawed prospects at quarterback and this is a passing offense which seems like a disaster in the making. Smith is the only receiver we even kind of like and he's a WR4/WR5.

49ers | Eli Harold in line for more time    Thu Jul 21, 02:25 AM

49ers | Erik Pears might be on way out    Thu Jul 21, 02:24 AM

San Francisco OT Erik Pears was the primary right tackle in 2015, but it might be tough for him to hold onto the job this season. OT Trent Brown is likely to make a strong bid for the job. He started two games last season in his rookie season, and both he and Pears are likely to rotate during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: The offensive line needs to improve, so we're not shocked at the potential shakeup. Brown has upside at least and the Niners might as well try it out.

49ers | Josh Garnett might be cornerstone    Thu Jul 21, 02:23 AM

San Francisco 49ers OG Josh Garnett might be in line for significant playing time and could be a cornerstones for the offensive line. It's uncertain where Garnett fits in with plenty of veterans along the O-line, but he can play both guard and tackle.

Footballguys view: Guard play is never really the ideal place for a cornerstone on the line (that's normally center or left tackle) but the Niners will take what they can get given the mess that this team looks to be. Garnett is solid, so he's a great guy to get regular playing time.

49ers | Bruce Miller could help out at TE    Thu Jul 21, 02:23 AM

San Francisco 49ers FB Bruce Miller is learning the nuances of the tight end position, but he has good hands and can also help out on special teams. He might be used the No. 3 tight end behind TEs Garrett Celek and Vance McDonald.

Footballguys view: We don't expect much more than blocking from the tight ends, so even adding Miller makes no real difference.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman looks to lead league    Thu Jul 21, 02:22 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is two years removed from left knee surgery, and he intends to lead the NFL in tackles like he did in 2015. Bowman reportedly looked sharp in offseason workouts, and he will be the centerpiece of the defense which is expected to be slightly improved.

Footballguys view: Bowman should be a force this year and the defense will have to be the strength of this team as the offense is a mess. We like Bowman in IDP leagues this year and think he is finally back to his upper end of potential.

49ers | All eyes will be on QB battle    Thu Jul 21, 02:21 AM

San Francisco 49ers QBs Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick head into training camp battling for the starting job under center. Many in the organization feel Gabbert is a better fit in head coach Chip Kelly's offense, and he has a good grasp of the offseason.

Footballguys view: This entire situation just makes you feel ill. We do think Kaepernick could be a solid fit in Kelly's offense and find it hard to believe Gabbert is the real fit. That said, Kelly moves to the beat of his own drummer (and that guy is not exactly Neil Pert) so either outcome is possible. Gabbert did look OK last year and had a solid end to 2015 but we'd still avoid him as more than QB3.

49ers | Aaron Lynch may wait for extension    Sun Jul 17, 04:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aaron Lynch likely will have to wait for a contract extension until the 49ers are comfortable with his reliability. Lynch has been suspended for the first four games of the season.

Footballguys view: It's not a good time to ask for a raise if you're Lynch. He'll need to return, stay out of trouble and show that he can build off last year's production. In 2015, Lynch led the 49ers with 62 QB pressures and 6.5 sacks.

49ers | DeAndre Smelter better after sitting out    Sat Jul 16, 12:21 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter said he benefitted from sitting out and rehabbing his knee last year because he was able to observe and learn from WR Torrey Smith and WR Anquan Boldin.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Georgia Tech last year, Smelter has the toughness to make difficult catches over the middle of the field. He can create separation with football savvy, and Smelter is a force to be dealt with after the catch. We'll see if he can regain his speed and quickness after returning from his knee injury. Smelter also needs to become more familiar with the full route tree after running a limited route tree for the Yellow Jackets.

49ers | Aaron Lynch suspended    Fri Jul 15, 04:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aaron Lynch has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Footballguys view: It's a blow to the 49ers defense as Lynch is a player that can consistently create pressure (62 QB pressures in 2015) on opposing QBs. Lynch will be able to return in Week 5 against the Cardinals.

49ers | Eric Rogers to make immediate impact?    Tue Jul 12, 04:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Eric Rogers has had an impressive offseason so far. What adds to the intrigue is that head coach Chip Kelly personally contacted Rogers after the 49ers signed the wide receiver.

Footballguys view: A star in the CFL for the Calgary Stampeders, Rogers has made a good impression throughout this offseason and he's certainly a player to watch in camp. At 6'4" 215 pounds, Rogers has a nice size/speed combination and his 'my ball' mentality shows through in highlight packages. He'll be in line to make the 53-man roster if he has a good camp. However, we're only monitoring him in super deep dynasty leagues. The 49ers passing game doesn't get us excited in re-draft leagues.

49ers | Quinton Patton sees opportunity    Thu Jun 30, 12:41 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton sees a chance to prove his himself in a fresh offensive system with few established veterans and plenty of competition. 'There's a lot of opportunity out there with (Chip Kelly) coming in with his offense, and the offense slinging the ball around,' he said in a radio interview.

Footballguys view: Last year in the largest role of his pro career, Patton didn't do much and finished with 30 catches for 394 yards across 424 snaps. This season, we're not crazy about his fantasy upside as a potential starter across from Torrey Smith. The 49ers passing game is one we're not loading up on in our fantasy drafts, and you should follow suit.

49ers | DeAndre Smelter likely to make team    Mon Jun 27, 04:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter may be behind WR Eric Rogers on the depth chart, but he is still expected to make the final roster, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Smelter is believed to be ahead of rookie WR Aaron Burbridge on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Georgia Tech in 2015, Smelter should be healthier this year as he was still recovering from an ACL he suffered in college last year as a rookie. Like all Georgia Tech WRs, Smelter is big, fast and physical. Let's see if he can be more like Calvin Johnson or Demaryius Thomas and less like Stephen Hill. We like Smelter in dynasty leagues, but re-draft owners should only keep his name on waiver-wire speed dial.

49ers | Carlos Hyde buying into offense    Fri Jun 24, 09:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde said he is excited about head coach Chip Kelly's offensive system and believes it will allow him to showcase all his abilities.

Footballguys view: Hyde hasn't ever been a back that is used heavily in the passing game, and backup Shaun Draughn is better suited for the role. Still, he should be among the highest volume backs in the league when it comes to carries, and even a modest total like 25-30 catches could have him flirting with RB1 status if he stays healthy and Chip Kelly continues to run more plays than any other offense.

49ers | SF wideout jobs are wide open    Tue Jun 21, 01:15 AM

San Francisco 49ers WRs Bruce Ellington, Quinton Patton and Jerome Simpson are in the mix for the starting job opposite WR Torrey Smith. WR Dres Anderson isn't expected to be consistent enough to shoulder the load, but he is also in the battle. WR DeAndrew White has plenty of size, but he is considered closer to the roster bubble than he is to being a regular contributor.

Footballguys view: This is a spot not many fantasy owners should be looking at. Only those in the deepest of deep leagues should be thinking about a second WR from the 49ers in 2016. Even Smith is a deeper option, sitting at WR54 (11.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Torrey Smith ready for No. 1 role    Tue Jun 21, 01:13 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith inherits the No. 1 spot in the depth chart with WR Anquan Boldin no longer with the organization. It will be the first time in Smith's career that he is the unquestioned go-to guy. Smith wants to be more than just a deep threat and worked to develop a good rapport with QB Blaine Gabbert in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Gabbert hasn't yet secured the starting job, but he has to be considered the frontrunner as Colin Kaepernick works to come back from three separate offseason surgeries. Smith should only be considered a WR5/WR6 for fantasy owners as this 49ers passing game could be a mess in year one of the Chip Kelly offense. Right now, Smith has an ADP of WR54 (11.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Two RBs looking to move up order    Tue Jun 21, 01:13 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB DuJuan Harris saw extended reps in the offseason, and he and RB Kelvin Taylor will be looking to move up the depth chart. Currently Harris and Taylor are behind RBs Carlos Hyde and Shaun Draughn in the pecking order.

Footballguys view: Harris is a good all-purpose back, but injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his pro career. Taylor, son of former Jaguars star RB Fred Taylor, is a tough player who is willing to run between the tackles. The rookie never fumbled in his college career at Florida but needs to show better patience and anticipation of cut-back lanes if he wants to play up to his potential as a pro.

49ers | Shaun Draughn in line for big role    Tue Jun 21, 01:11 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Shaun Draughn's ability to catch passes brings some versatility to the offense, and beat writer Michael Wagaman predicts Draughn will see plenty of playing time.

Footballguys view: Draughn isn't a name that screams fantasy value. The 49ers will lead the way with Carlos Hyde, and he should be the centerpiece of the rushing attack...if not the entire offense. Hyde is going off the board at RB18 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues, and Draughn is not getting drafted. Fantasy owners should keep him on the waiver-wire speed dial just in case something happens to Hyde, but we're not predicting much fantasy value for him if Hyde is healthy.

49ers | Carlos Hyde sits atop depth chart    Tue Jun 21, 01:10 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is expected to keep the top spot in the backfield as long as he can stay healthy.

Footballguys view: Volume and number of snaps is the name of the game with Chip Kelly. Hyde is going to be the lead back in a Kelly system that is going to run as many plays as possible. The inside/outside zone-read option could be good for Hyde. A disappointing fantasy player, Hyde could put up RB2 numbers this season. His current ADP is RB18 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

  49ers | Kendall Gaskins re-signs with 49ers    Mon Jun 20, 04:45 PM

Free-agent RB Kendall Gaskins re-signed to a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, June 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Richmond in 2013, Gaskins has bounced around to four different teams during his time in the NFL. He got into four games last year for the 49ers and had 16 carries for 38 yards with eight catches for 69 yards in those regular season appearances.

49ers | Two players may miss 49ers' final roster    Mon Jun 20, 02:18 PM

San Francisco 49ers WRs DeAndre Smelter and RB Mike Davis were left off the 53-man roster projection, according to ESPN.com's Michael Wagaman.

Footballguys view: Davis is a player we've been monitoring in dynasty leagues. Carlos Hyde is the starter with the 49ers, and veteran Shaun Draughn should be his primary backup. If Davis wants to make the team, he'll have to prove that he's more valuable than DuJuan Harris or rookie Kelvin Taylor.

49ers | Jeff Driskel receives praise    Mon Jun 13, 08:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel, a sixth-round pick this year, received plenty of praise during offseason workouts. 'I think he's already been exposed to multiple systems at the college level, so we've been impressed with him. He's very athletic. I think he was the fastest quarterback at the combine. He's big. He's got a good arm,' head coach Chip Kelly said. Driskel has also participated on special teams, and his size (6-4, 234 pounds) and speed (4.56-second 40-yard dash) make him a candidate to be the personal protector on the punt return team. However, Driskel doesn't figure to be in position to compete for the starting quarterback job with QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. Driskel currently is the fourth QB on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: We've heard more than a bit of praise for the rookie this offseason. Driskel is a QB we'll be adding in dynasty leagues. He's athletic, has a strong arm and can keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick will compete for the starting job in training camp, but the best QB on the roster may in fact be Driskel. He may not see the field this year, but Driskel is a player worth monitoring in dynasty leagues because of his skill set, upside and fit in the Chip Kelly offense.

49ers | Anthony Davis says he will play    Sun Jun 12, 11:36 PM

Retired OT Anthony Davis said on Twitter Saturday, June 11, that he will play football again. The Tweet has since been deleted.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick excited about offense    Fri Jun 10, 05:41 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) said he is eager to run the offense that head coach Chip Kelly has brought to the team because it is similar to the one he used in college. He said he believes the new offense will give him more chances to run the ball.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick ran the Pistol offense in college at Nevada, and there are similarities to what Kelly does on offense in the pros. He'll be utilizing the inside-zone or outside-zone reads to move the chains. On paper, Kaepernick makes a great fit for Kelly's offense....but he'll need to prove it on the field.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick looking to improve play    Fri Jun 10, 05:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (knee, shoulder, thumb) has tried to improve his flexibility this offseason by stretching his back because it would tighten up on him in the past. He is looking to become more limber so he can be a more elusive runner, according to a source. Kaepernick is also wearing contact lenses to help his short-area vision and has a tinted visor on his helmet to protect the contacts and reduce the sunlight in his eyes.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is what scouts call a "pure sight" thrower....he always has been. That term basically means that Kaepernick has to see a receiver wide open before he lets the ball fly. The veteran quarterback needs to throw with better anticipation if he wants to play better as a passer. He's behind Blaine Gabbert in the 49ers QB competition at this time.

49ers | Carlos Hyde to be key in passing game    Fri Jun 10, 02:35 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is excited that he'll be a focal point in the passing attack in 2016. 'I think it's something that's overlooked, but this year we may get to see it,' Hyde said. 'I like playing receiver. It's another opportunity to get out in space and get the ball in your hands.'

Footballguys view: We're not thrilled about the 49ers offense, but we will be interested in adding Hyde to our fantasy rosters at the right price. The rest of the offense is filled with question marks, but Hyde could take advantage of rushing lanes (and cutback lanes) in Chip Kelly's system. His current ADP of RB18 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues seems about right for what his value could be this season, and there's a chance he could finish the year just inside the top 15 for fantasy RBs.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick focused on football    Thu Jun 9, 06:52 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick doesn't anticipate any issues between him and the organization this season, even after requesting a trade earlier in the year. 'I'm here, I'm a 49er, I'm excited for this offseason, the work that I can put in this summer to get ready for training camp and to come in and compete,' Kaepernick said. Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee), who had multiple offseason surgeries, also expects to be healthier and bulkier when training camp rolls around.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick's career has fallen off, and we're not sure he can resurrect it this season with the 49ers. When healthy, Kaepernick will have to beat out Blaine Gabbert for the starting job. On paper, Kaepernick seems like a good fit for the Chip Kelly offense...but we're not overly optimistic about it.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert the favorite at QB?    Wed Jun 8, 02:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert is the 'heavy favorite' to enter the 2016 as the starting quarterback, according to NFL Media columnist Michael Silver. QB Colin Kaepernick is 'allegedly in competition' with Gabbert for the starting job. 'He's loved in this locker room,' Silver said of Gabbert. 'He did a lot of good things last year and I'd be shocked if he's not the starter in the opener.'

Footballguys view: We can see that. Gabbert should be the frontrunner because Kaepernick still can't practice fully as he continues to recover from three offseason surgeries. When there's no real competition (yet), Gabbert can shine. Fantasy owners are staying away from the 49ers passing game....for good reason.

  49ers | Blaine Gabbert's athleticism surprises    Tue Jun 7, 10:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has turned heads during the offseason and he has really surprised with his athleticism. 'On the field, I know (head coach Chip Kelly) talked about his athleticism. I felt the same way. I didn't know he was as athletic as he was. Throwing the ball, too. He can make all the throws that you need. He has a really good skillset and we're excited about that,' quarterbacks coach Ryan Day said.

Footballguys view: How is that surprising? Coming out of Missouri years ago, the book on Gabbert was that he was incredibly athletic but saw 'ghosts' in the pocket. It's not a shock that Gabbert is athletic...and that ability should greatly help him in the Kelly offense. Now, if he could only shake that 'ghost' thing and didn't feel pressure when it wasn't there.

49ers | Vance McDonald turning heads    Tue Jun 7, 10:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald is a player garnering plenty of attention during minicamp, as QB Blaine Gabbert and tight ends coach Jeff Nixon each heaped praise on the tight end. 'He's such a great athlete. He's smart. He does a great job in the run and pass game. He's a guy that we have to utilize. He's a mismatch nightmare on linebackers,' Gabbert said. Nixon said the team is looking for McDonald to pick up where he left off last season and be a big-play tight end in the pass game.

Footballguys view: McDonald had a few games last year when he was fantasy relevant. Perhaps he can carry over a bit of that momentum to this season. He's at the top of the depth chart, and fantasy owners need to realize how much Chip Kelly uses the TE position in his offense. Last year, Eagles TE Zach Ertz caught 75 passes for 853 yards and two TDs and he finished the year as TE10 in standard-scoring leagues. McDonald may reach those numbers, but he's a player who isn't getting drafted in 12-team PPR leagues right now...so make sure he's on your waiver-wire speed dial--especially in TE-premium leagues.

49ers | Niners pleased with Jeff Driskel    Tue Jun 7, 10:11 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel is making the coaching staff very happy in the early days of practice. Quarterbacks coach Ryan Day likes what he sees from Driskel so far. 'He's dynamic with his feet, for sure. He can make a lot of the throws, too. There are a few things that we're working on technically in terms of throwing the football. But he's got a great skillset we look forward to develop,' Day said.

Footballguys view: We'll be watching Driskel closely in deep dynasty leagues. He was supposed to be the next great Gators QB at Florida, but he ended up playing his best football after he transferred to Louisiana Tech. Driskel is athletic and can keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. He has a strong arm and can fit the ball into tight windows. The 49ers QB situation isn't chock full of great talent with Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick at the top of the depth chart. Driskel is worth keeping an eye on.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to do individual drills    Tue Jun 7, 01:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) isn't cleared to take part in the minicamp, but head coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick will do individual drills on the side.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is recovering from three offseason surgeries, and he has to be falling behind in this QB competition with Blaine Gabbert. If he continues to miss valuable team practice time, then Gabbert may win the starting job for Week 1. If that happens, we're not expecting Gabbert to stay in that spot if (when?) he struggles.

San Francisco 49ers QBs Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are on similar ground, according to head coach Chip Kelly. 'I think they're similar,' Kelly told KGMZ-FM. 'They have a similar skill set. They're both 6-foot-4-plus. They both can really run, which will help keep plays alive. Obviously we're not a quarterback-run offense, but if the quarterback can run, you can use a little of that to your advantage. And they both have extremely strong arms. So, from a skill set standpoint, the two of them are kind of cut out of the same mold.'

Footballguys view: They're similar because they've both struggled in the pros too. Gabbert is the frontrunner at this time as Kaepernick recovers from three offseason surgeries. We're not excited by most of this 49ers offense, and neither QB makes for an enticing fantasy option.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick out for minicamp    Mon Jun 6, 10:54 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) won't be cleared for minicamp this week, but the team is hoping he receives clearance closer to training camp.

Footballguys view: He's recovering from three offseason surgeries and is falling behind in the QB competition with Blaine Gabbert. On paper, we like his fit in the Chip Kelly offense but we are extremely cautious when considering Kaepernick's fantasy prospects this season--if he wins the starting job.

49ers | Bruce Miller playing some receiver    Sun Jun 5, 11:51 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Bruce Miller has been lining up at tight end and receiver at times, head coach Chip Kelly said. Miller said he has lost some weight for his new role and has been studying Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten to improve his route running.

Footballguys view: There are very few things about this Kelly/49ers marriage that get us excited for fantasy owners. Miller playing TE or WR certainly doesn't get the juices flowing either.

San Francisco 49ers SS Jimmie Ward is considered one of the top 11 best players by defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil, and the team feels Ward's best way to get onto the field as an every-down player is at cornerback.

He can join the team after his last exam, which is scheduled for Wednesday, June 8.
