San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (hamstring) may participate in pregame warmups but is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Aug. 11.

Footballguys view: We've got some dynasty love for Kittle, an H-back type of player who can be moved around the formation as a receiving weapon. The 49ers are rebuilding under new head coach Kyle Shanahan, but this year we should see Vance McDonald as their primary tight end.

49ers | George Kittle sits out Wednesday    Wed Aug 9, 07:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (hamstring) was held out of practice Wednesday, Aug. 9, because of a tight hamstring. He is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Aug. 11.

Footballguys view: Kittle was gaining a lot of momentum and possibly even earning a big role in the offense. That has slowed down with this injury, but his dynasty outlook is still bright for a fifth-round pick. Vance McDonald has the door open to lead the team's tight ends in targets if Kittle's hamstring injury lingers.

Footballguys view: Garnett is a better run blocker than pass blocker and the 49ers will need him against the stout Panthers front Week 1. If he's not able to go, that could hurt the Week 1 outlook of Carlos Hyde.

49ers | Carlos Hyde a 'beast' in training camp    Tue Aug 8, 12:54 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde reportedly came into training camp in the best shape of his life, has been a 'beast' in practice and is a player generating a ton of optimism in training camp as someone they view as the 'bell-cow of their offense,' according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Hyde's ADP has fallen two rounds, but it looks like that was a premature reaction and anticipation of Kyle Shanahan trying to install one of "his guys" in the backfield. Hyde has responded the messages via the media that the team is not sold on him, and he could be one of the biggest values at running back this year if he falls to the fifth round.

49ers | Brian Hoyer impressive in camp    Sun Aug 6, 02:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer has looked 'very sharp' in training camp so far, according to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.

Footballguys view: Hoyer is relatively capable of not being awful, which is definitely faint praise. Considering how much of a mess everyone expects the Niners to be offensively this season, all he has to do is not be a dumpster fire under center and we'll all label his time a success. That being said, he's an absolute 'avoid' in all fantasy formats even if Matt Barkley or CJ Beathard never steal the job mid-season.

49ers | Kapri Bibbs suffers shoulder injury    Sun Aug 6, 09:55 AM

49ers | Malcolm Smith done for the season    Sat Aug 5, 07:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Malcolm Smith (chest) suffered a torn pectoral during practice Saturday, Aug. 5, and will miss the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: Smith was going to be the WILL for the San Francisco 49ers, so this is a pretty significant blow. Then again, this is why they drafted Reuben Foster. Foster was already going to rotate in with Smith, so now the rookie will have to step up more quickly if this defense is to be effective.

49ers | Joe Williams picking up the pace    Fri Aug 4, 09:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams has been playing better of late, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. 'So I thought he's put two good practices in a row,' Shanahan said Friday. Aug. 4. 'It takes time with some of these guys.'

Footballguys view: This happens with rookie at skill positions, though running back is one of the 'easier' positions to enter the league as. Carlos Hyde remains the starter for now, but was lackluster last season, so if Williams can show a little more as we hit the season, he can steal that job. Of course, nobody expects much from this offense and Williams is no more than a flier at this point.

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter is 'coming on' in recent practices, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Footballguys view: Smelter is the latest in a long line of size/speed prospects from Georgia Tech. He has a chance to make the team as the fifth receiver, and the only big receiver on the roster.

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (hamstring) is expected to be released Thursday, Aug. 3, according to his source. Ellington is recovered from last season's torn hamstring.

Footballguys view: Ellington was building momentum last year before getting hurt, but the new regime probably prefers fifth-round pick Trent Taylor to back up Jeremy Kerley in the slot.
