49ers | Dante Pettis turning heads    Sun Jun 16, 08:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Dante Pettis has impressed QB Jimmy Garoppolo and head Kyle Shanahan with his new physique and attention to detail. 'Dante's body is maturing,' Garoppolo said. 'He's coming out of breaks with power, he has speed.''He worked while he was away,' Shanahan said. 'He tried to get bigger. He worked more at his routes and he came here with the idea of 'Hey, I'm not just coming here to get better back in shape, I'm coming here to get better.''

49ers | Jason Verrett looking forward to training camp    Sat Jun 15, 11:04 AM

San Francisco 49ers' CB Jason Verrett (Achilles') is expected to remain in the Santa Clara area during the break leading up to training camp and hopes to be able to return to the field when camp begins.

Footballguys view: Verrett is great when healthy...and he struggles to stay on the field. He was unable to participate in OTAs and mandatory minicamp while recovering from a torn Achilles' tendon.

49ers | Richie James losing ground    Fri Jun 14, 09:57 PM

San Francisco WR Richie James has fallen behind WR Trent Taylor for the starting slot receiver job during spring practices, in the opinion of Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Taylor has had some injury problems during his pro career, and that's kept him from playing a full 16-game season in two years with the 49ers. Now that he's healthy, Taylor seems to be learning from 49ers wide receiver coach Wes Welker. We should see this battle continue into the preseason.

49ers | Trent Taylor has found a mentor    Fri Jun 14, 09:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Trent Taylor said he has learned a lot by working with wide receivers coach Wes Welker this offseason.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Taylor can take what he learns from Welker and apply it to the field. The 49ers will use him as their slot receiver once again in 2019. Taylor needs to stay healthy and establish a strong connection with returning QB Jimmy Garoppolo. He's got some dynasty value in deep leagues but Taylor is not getting drafted right now in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon may be ready for camp    Wed Jun 12, 05:15 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) hopefully will be a full participant when training camp begins, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: McKinnon is going to have to compete with Tevin Coleman and Matt Breida in training camp. It's looking like it could be a three-headed RBBC for the 49ers in 2019. McKinnon has a current ADP of RB40 (8.12) in 12-team PPR leagues. Coleman has an ADP of RB31 (6.10) and Brieda is coming off the board at RB56 (14.02) at this time.

49ers | George Kittle sits out Wednesday    Wed Jun 12, 04:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle (hip) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 12, because of hip tightness.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are going to use Kittle plenty during the regular season, so it's not a big deal if they limit him in offseason workouts. Kittle has a current ADP of TE3 (3.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo on track for training camp    Tue Jun 11, 04:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) continues to participate in individual and seven-on-seven drills and appears as though he will be ready for the start of training camp, according to ESPN's Nick Wagoner.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo made it three games in 2018 before going down with this knee injury. He has been limited in practice but is trending in the right direction. This seems like a make-or-break season for Garoppolo and the 49ers. He's got to stay healthy and play the franchise quarterback he was supposed to be when the team traded for him.

49ers | Deebo Samuel dealing with hip tweak    Tue Jun 11, 04:31 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel (hip) did not participate in minicamp practice Tuesday, June 11, after tweaking his hip recently.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Samuel can get back from this injury quickly. Some are reporting this as a groin injury. We'll know more as practice continues.

49ers | Garrett Celek recovering from back surgery    Tue Jun 11, 03:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Garrett Celek (back) recently underwent back surgery and is expected to need two months to recover, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: Celek had back issues back in 2014 when he was limited to just three games. He also finished the 2018 season with a concussion that he is still recovering from in the concussion protocol. Celek might be cleared some time towards the end of August.

  49ers | More on Joe Staley's deal    Fri Jun 7, 11:24 AM

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers OT Joe Staley's deal is worth $36.76 million over three years with $28 million in new money. If he plays 16 games, he'll make $13.5 million in 2019. In 2020, he has a $10.55 million base salary with $4.5 million guaranteed and $700,000 in potential bonuses. In 2021, he'll have an $11.3 million salary with $700,000 in bonuses.

Footballguys view: Staley is still playing at a high level at 34, and this should insure that he'll end his career as a 49er after they took him in the first round in 2007.

49ers | Deebo Samuel too heavy?    Wed Jun 5, 02:36 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel needs to drop some weight in order to function more effectively out of the slot, according to WR coach Wes Welker.

Footballguys view: The rookie from South Carolina is listed on the team's official website at 214 pounds. He was listed around 210 pounds during his days in college. Samuel is a bully with the rock and wins with strength and run-after-the-catch ability. He's known as a hyper-competitive player and if he needs to drop a few lbs then he should be able to do that no problem. We're excited about him in dynasty formats. The rookie has a current ADP of WR56 (12.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Tevin Coleman set for 1,000 yards?    Sat Jun 1, 09:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman's 'pass-catching prowess' should put him at the top of the depth chart, in the opinion of Bucky Brooks of NFL.com, and Brooks believes Coleman can be a 1,000-yard rusher in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.

Footballguys view: Coleman is the healthiest back and probably the best pass catcher among the 49ers quartet, and he also has the best touchdown scoring track record. He's the most valuable back for fantasy, and as long as the positive buzz continues, his value will rise. He's still modestly priced for a proven back in a good offense.

49ers | Kwon Alexander back for training camp?    Sat Jun 1, 01:17 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB Kwon Alexander (knee) is expected to return to the field in time for training camp, defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said.   49ers | Deebo Samuel building chemistry    Sat May 25, 09:32 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel showed 'nice chemistry' with QB Jimmy Garoppolo, in the opinion of Cam Inman of the San Jose Mercury News.

Footballguys view: We love Samuel's upside in dynasty formats. His game is all about run-after-the-catch ability. He's strong and competitive, so we'll be monitoring his progress in training camp and the preseason.

49ers | Jerick McKinnon missing workouts    Sat May 25, 05:44 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jerick McKinnon (knee) is not participating in offseason workouts but is expected to be available for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: The 49ers backfield is jam-packed with talent...but most of those guys are banged up right now. In addition to McKinnon being banged up, the team has Raheem Mostert (arm) and Matt Breida (pectoral) also battling injuries at this time. When healthy, McKinnon should be splitting time/touches with free agent addition Tevin Coleman.

49ers | Tevin Coleman may receive most touches    Sat May 25, 03:28 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Tevin Coleman probably will receive the most touches among the running backs this upcoming season, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Footballguys view: Maiocco is skeptical that Jerick McKinnon can return all the way to form after tearing his ACL in camp last year. Coleman is the most valuable back right now, but his durability record isn't spotless either. The shark move here might be drafting the cheapest back (Matt Breida, currently sidelined by a pectoral tear), and keeping Raheem Mostert (currently recovering from a second procedure on a broken forearm) on waiver wire speed dial.

49ers | San Francisco unlikely to add safety    Sat May 25, 03:26 PM

Free-agent SS Eric Berry (Chiefs) and SS Tre Boston (Cardinals) likely will not receive interest from the San Francisco 49ers even though S Jimmie Ward (collarbone) is expected to be sidelined for eight to 12 weeks, in the opinion of NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Footballguys view: Ward is projected to be a starter at free safety, although this could open the door for last year's Week 1 starter Adrian Colbert. Maiocco thinks Berry's durability is also questionable, and Boston is more of a hybrid safety than pure free safety, which is Ward's position.

49ers | Nick Bosa has minor hamstring strain    Thu May 23, 04:54 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and will not practice with the team over the remaining three weeks of the offseason program while receiving treatment.

Footballguys view: For a minor hamstring injury, Bosa is going to miss plenty of time. We should see him out there at or near full strength for training camp. Bosa has a bit of an injury history dating back to his days in college at Ohio State. We hope he can get healthy, stay healthy and make plays for the 49ers defense in 2019.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo not fully cleared    Wed May 22, 01:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo (knee) won't be fully cleared for full-team drills until training camp, in part, because the team doesn't want to risk having defenders around his legs. Garoppolo has done work in 7-on-7 drills.

Footballguys view: It's good the 49ers are being cautious here. They need to get the Garoppolo-led team on the right track as head coach Kyle Shanahan enters his third year running the team. Garoppolo has a current ADP of QB16 (11.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Garrett Celek still in concussion protocol    Tue May 21, 05:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Garrett Celek (concussion, back) has yet to be cleared from a concussion he suffered in Week 17 and will get clearance until 'at least' training camp, according to NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.

Footballguys view: The 49ers will be cautious as Celek has been recovering for months. The team has George Kittle as their main tight end. Celek will be a reserve behind Kittle and mostly a blocker for the team when healthy.

49ers | Raheem Mostert had second surgery on arm    Tue May 21, 04:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Raheem Mostert (arm) needed a 're-set' after the fracture in his surgically repaired arm wasn't healing properly.

Footballguys view: Something to watch here for Fantasy GMs who have Mostert in dynasty formats. The latest adjustment has reportedly added a month to his timetable to return. The 49ers have a jam-packed backfield which could cause plenty of headaches from a fantasy perspective in 2019.

49ers | Matt Breida suffers pectoral injury    Tue May 21, 04:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida (pectoral) will not take part in organized team activities after slightly tearing a pectoral muscle while lifting weights this spring.

Footballguys view: Breida is trying to earn a spot in the RB pecking order with guys like Jerrick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman. This injury sets him back in that task, but reports indicate Breida should be back by training camp.

49ers | Nick Bosa hurt in practice Tuesday    Tue May 21, 04:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa (hamstring) was spotted clutching his hamstring after pulling up on a pass-rush drill Tuesday, May 21.

Footballguys view: The 49ers will be careful here. Bosa is their prized 2019 first-round pick and could have a huge impact for the 49ers defense this season. Hamstring injuries are known to linger, so expect Bosa to be quite limited if he does return for action in OTAs.

49ers | Deebo Samuel ready to produce?    Thu May 16, 09:17 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel should provide 'instant production' in head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense, according to John Clayton of 710 ESPN Seattle.

Footballguys view: We love Samuel and his bully mentality on the football field. He's tough to bring down after the catch and he fights to win at the catch point consistently. Samuel is a strong slot receiver but reports out of San Francisco suggest they'll try him on the outside. He's a rookie receiver to watch in deeper re-draft leagues and most certainly scoop him up everywhere you can in dynasty formats.

49ers | 3-headed RB monster in San Fran?    Thu May 16, 12:34 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Matt Breida said Wednesday, May 15, the team could feature a three-man running back rotation also involving Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman. 'They've talked to us about it,' Breida said. 'They've said, 'Hey, we're going to use all you guys.' All three of us are going to be used a lot. I don't want to give away any secrets, but we're all going to be used in the offense.' It's still too early/unclear how snaps will be divided.

Footballguys view: This would be a problem for Fantasy GMs trying to manage a weekly starting lineup. We'll get a better feel about this clear RBBC in training camp and the preseason. At this time, the earliest drafted 49ers running back is Tevin Coleman at RB30 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Free-agent TE Levine Toilolo (Lions) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, May 15. The deal is pending a physical.

49ers | George Kittle stayed busy in the slot    Thu May 9, 02:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE George Kittle saw 24.4 percent of his targeted passes when he was lined up in the slot in 2018, and he finished in a tie for fourth among tight ends in yards per route run from there, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Kittle exploded onto the scene in 2018 with an incredible 88 catches for 1,377 yards and five receiving touchdowns. He should come close to those numbers once again this year, and some more touchdowns would be nice. Kittle has a current ADP of TE3 (3.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Undrafted free-agent RB Austin Walter (Rice) signed with the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, May 5. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Walter is a smaller change-of-pace back measuring in at 5'7" 194 pounds. He turned some heads at a regional combine earlier this year by recording a 4.49 40-yard dash, and Walter was impressive catching the ball during his pro day. He's a longshot to make the roster but we'll keep an eye on him in crazy deep dynasty leagues.
