San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald is a candidate to be cut, according to Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle. He said it 'wouldn't be a surprise' if McDonald didn't make the 53-man roster.Link to story

49ers | Cole Hikutini a good fit in San Francisco Fri May 19, 11:57 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE Cole Hikutini is a good fit for the offense and is the type of player head coach Kyle Shanahan is looking for in a tight end, according to vice president of player personnel Adam Peters.
|Footballguys view: Shanahan's system is known to be TE friendly, so any player at the position working under him is an intriguing prospect. They don't have much at the position behind Vance McDonald, so we'll be monitoring Hikutini in deep dynasty leagues. He was a pure pass-catching weapon during his college days at Louisville and will have to likely shine on special teams just to make the 53-man roster.|
49ers | Ran Carthon added to San Fran's front office Fri May 19, 02:07 PM

49ers | Joe Williams has chance to start in 2017 Wed May 17, 01:46 PM
San Francisco 49ers fourth-round pick RB Joe Williams has a 'legitimate chance' to 'immediately unseat' RB Carlos Hyde as the team's top running back this season, according to CSN Bay Area's Matt Maiocco.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers new regime doesn't seem to be enamored with Hyde at all. He's in the final year of his contract, but the 49ers may move him behind Williams on the depth chart. Williams is a runner who can create space for himself in a variety of ways. He's got burst to and through the hole, and he can make defenders miss in the open field. Williams is not a third-down back, but he can lead the way in a RBBC as the featured runner.|

49ers | NaVorro Bowman not being shopped Thu May 11, 01:48 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') is not on the trading block, contrary to reports. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan released a joint statement Thursday, May 11, that made it clear Bowman has been a 'consummate professional' and they are excited for him to return to the field this year.
|Footballguys view: Contradicting some earlier reports, it seems like Bowman will remain a Niner. Of course, the team could just be covering it's collective rear end because they couldn't get interest and now need him happy as he's stuck there.|

49ers | Two 49ers linebackers ahead of schedule Tue May 9, 02:45 PM
San Francisco 49ers LBs Reuben Foster (shoulder) and NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') are ahead of schedule in their rehabilitation. Foster is expected to be on the field for the start of training camp, according to general manager John Lynch.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers selected Foster in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft even though he was recovering from shoulder surgery. There were reports that he may need another surgery on the shoulder, but if he's going to be ready for training camp then that's not the case. When healthy, Foster could play like Patrick Willis for the 49ers defense.|

49ers | BJ Johnson signed by 49ers Mon May 8, 04:20 PM
Undrafted free-agent WR BJ Johnson (Georgia Southern) was signed by the San Francisco 49ers Monday, May 8.
|Footballguys view: Johnson played in 44 games with the Eagles (35 starts) and registered 92 receptions for 1,377 yards and six touchdowns. He was used as a deep receiver, and Johnson showed the ability to concentrate with coverage all over him. Johnson works his way back to the ball and can work the sidelines with consistency. He's a longshot to make the 53-man roster, but in super deep dynasty leagues we're watching.|
49ers | DuJuan Harris released Mon May 8, 02:08 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB DuJuan Harris was released Monday, May 8.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers are jam packed at the RB position after trading the Broncos for Kapri Bibbs and selecting Joe Williams (Utah) in the 2017 NFL draft. Some team looking for a slashing pass catching back may look at Harris.|

49ers | K.D. Cannon cut Sun May 7, 01:56 PM
San Francisco 49ers WR KD Cannon has reportedly been released less than a week after signing as a priority undrafted free-agent.
|Footballguys view: That didn't last long. Cannon has one thing to his game - speed. He's not physical at the catch point, and Cannon drops too many passes. He should get a look from another team before or during training camp.|
49ers | Joe Williams confident, motivated Sat May 6, 12:05 AM
San Francisco 49ers RB Joe Williams said he feels like he was the best running back available in the 2017 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: After 'retiring' from football for a month in 2016, Williams returned to the Utes lineup and dominated. Williams finished the year as a top-20 RB in the nation with 1,420 rushing yards with 10 touchdowns in nine contests. A plus athlete, Williams can create on his own in various ways. The Kyle Shanahan system is incredibly RB friendly, so Williams is a name all fantasy owners need to monitor. He'll compete with Carlos Hyde (who is in a contract year) for the top spot with the 49ers.|
49ers | Aaron Lynch in danger of being cut? Fri May 5, 09:25 PM

49ers | Reuben Foster could miss season Fri May 5, 09:30 AM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) could need a follow-up procedure on his shoulder that would keep him out for the 2017 season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. That would be a worst-case scenario, Shanahan said.Link to story
49ers | 49ers ink five rookies to contracts Thu May 4, 07:24 PM
The San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms with fifth-round TE George Kittle, fifth-round WR Trent Taylor, sixth-round DL Pita Taumoepenu, sixth-round DL D.J. Jones and seventh-round S Adrian Colbert on their four-year rookie deals Thursday, May 4.
|Footballguys view: It's a Kyle Shanahan offense, so we're going to be monitoring any tight end on the roster as this is known to be a TE-friendly system. Kittle is a player to watch and drew comparisons to Charles Clay (Bills) in the pre-draft process.|
49ers | Reuben Foster had concussions Thu May 4, 03:30 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (concussion) suffered multiple concussions during his time at the University of Alabama and there was concern in regards to his recovery time.
|Footballguys view: This should be a concern for everyone as most players coming out of college have been hit enough to worry about it. Foster should be fine, but the Niners will want to watch it long term. They felt good enough to take him near the end of the first round in the 2017 NFL draft.|
49ers | Mike Davis released Thu May 4, 02:27 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Mike Davis was released Thursday, May 4, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: Davis had a bit of hype surrounding him coming out of South Carolina in 2015. A fourth-round pick that year, Davis leaves San Francisco with only 108 yards rushing in two years combined. He may struggle to find work, and if/when he does it's not like we'll expect him to play up to the potential he showed with the Gamecocks years ago.|

49ers | San Fran adds seven UDFAs Wed May 3, 11:53 PM
The San Francisco 49ers has agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent QB Nick Mullens (Southern Miss), RB Matt Breida (Georgia Southern), FB Tyler McCloskey (Houston), WR KD Cannon (Baylor), WR Victor Bolden (Oregon State), WR Kendrick Bourne (Eastern Washington) and TE Cole Hikutini (Louisville). 49ers | SF comfortable with Reuben Foster's shoulder Wed May 3, 03:32 PM
The San Francisco 49ers were comfortable with drafting LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) even though he is recovering from shoulder surgery, but the team doctors understand the shoulder could be a risk during his rookie season, according to sources.
|Footballguys view: Foster has a game similar to that of former 49ers great Patrick Willis. If healthy, he can make an immediate impact and has All-Pro upside for a decade. Several teams did not consider taking Foster during the draft because of his shoulder.|
49ers | Plethora of 49ers waived Tue May 2, 07:17 PM

49ers | Coach high on C.J. Beathard Mon May 1, 08:01 PM
San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard was the only quarterback head coach Kyle Shanahan wanted in the 2017 NFL Draft. Shanahan said Beathard reminds him of Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins.
|Footballguys view: There's quite a few things to like about Beathard. His deep passes may be some of the prettiest and most accurate of any quarterback in this draft class. Beathard is going to get some time to develop, but we're watching him closely in deep dynasty leagues.|
49ers | Jimmie Ward's option picked up Mon May 1, 02:45 PM
San Francisco 49ers SS Jimmie Ward's fifth-year optioned was exercised Monday, May 1.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers don't have a ton of assets on either side of the ball, so picking up this option for Ward makes sense. Ward has the versatility to play all over the defensive backfield, but he's expected to play free safety in 2017.|

49ers | SF likely to pick up Jimmie Ward's option Sun Apr 30, 04:42 PM
San Francisco 49ers FS Jimmie Ward's fifth-year option likely will be exercised before the deadline, according to general manager John Lynch.
|Footballguys view: That Ward is going to be kept by a new regime is a good sign for his development entering his fourth year. He has the corner/safety versatility that team's covet in the increasingly pass-happy league.|

49ers | Vance McDonald was shopped around Sat Apr 29, 08:21 PM
San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald was made available in a trade during the 2017 NFL Draft, but the team did not agree to a deal, according to general manager John Lynch. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said McDonald is wanted by the 49ers.
|Footballguys view: McDonald has a chance to be a high volume target with Brian Hoyer, but it sounds like the new regime isn't too enamored with the tight end, who might be hard to trade after being signed to an extension this offseason. Watch out for fifth-round pick George Kittle long term. He has good speed and is very tough.|

49ers | Niners acquire Kapri Bibbs Sat Apr 29, 12:35 PM
The San Francisco 49ers acquired Denver Broncos RB Kapri Bibbs and a 2017 fifth-round choice (No. 117) for a 2018 fourth-round draft pick Saturday, April 29.
|Footballguys view: The Broncos move Bibbs after picking him up as an undrafted free agent out of Colorado State a few years ago. Bibbs gets a chance to be more than a reserve runner, but his path to playing time is still cluttered. The 49ers have a very RB-friendly offense under new head coach Kyle Shanahan, so anyone toting the rock is worth watching closely for fantasy owners.|
49ers | C.J. Beathard third on depth chart Sat Apr 29, 12:33 AM
San Francisco 49ers QB Brian Hoyer is No. 1 on the depth chart, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, followed by QB Matt Barkley and QB C.J. Beathard. 'We are bringing C.J. here to develop,' Shanahan said.
|Footballguys view: Beathard is an interesting developmental quarterback. He's got the ability to stretch the field with his arm strength, and Beathard does a good job with bucket throws. They'll need to work on his intermediate and short accuracy if Beathard is ever to develop into a starting option.|

49ers | San Francisco selects C.J. Beathard Fri Apr 28, 11:36 PM
The San Francisco 49ers selected QB C.J. Beathard with the 104th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.
|Footballguys view: This is a surprise as he was rated as a late round or UDFA selection, not a third rounder. He is a pro-style quarterback who had his receiving corps banged up in 2016. Even at his best, he looks like he has some issues with accuracy on deep balls and struggles to beat safeties at times.|
49ers | San Francisco drafts Ahkello Witherspoon Fri Apr 28, 09:44 PM
The San Francisco 49ers selected Ahkello Witherspoon with the 66th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.
|Footballguys view: The Niners add a guy with good size and speed, but is a bit inconsistent especially physically. Overall he had a lot of improvement this past season, and Witherspoon's technique and awareness has already shown that.|
49ers | No second surgery for Reuben Foster Fri Apr 28, 05:54 PM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) said he will not need a second surgery on his injured shoulder and should be ready for training camp.
|Footballguys view: He might still need surgery but can play through it for now. Also while other teams might have felt there was enough damage to warrant surgery, the Niners clearly didn't.|
49ers | Reuben Foster may need another surgery Fri Apr 28, 10:16 AM
San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster (shoulder) could need another surgery to repair the torn rotator cuff in his shoulder, according to at least one team's medical staff.
|Footballguys view: That would be disappointing for the Niners, but one assumes they either knew this or disagreed since they took him. How sever the procedure would be and how long he would be out are also factors we don't know.|
49ers | San Francisco selects Reuben Foster Thu Apr 27, 11:41 PM
The San Francisco 49ers selected Alabama LB Reuben Foster with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.
|Footballguys view: The defense gets another weapon, and one Mike Mayock said reminded him of Luke Kuechly. Foster is a tremendous playmaker with excellent athleticism, who is a big hitter. This is a great pick for the Niners, and well worth moving back into the first for.|
49ers | Solomon Thomas selected by the 49ers Thu Apr 27, 08:30 PM
The San Francisco 49ers selected Stanford DE Solomon Thomas with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.
|Footballguys view: The Niners defensive line is scary good, people. Thomas is a tremendous talent who has excellent strength quickness and explosiveness. He can step right on the field and have a huge impact, but with the depth at the position for San Francisco, he doesn't need to do everything. Solid pick by the rookie GM, and potential hall of fame worthy considering the haul he got in the trade back to take the guy he was aiming for anyway.|
49ers | Several miss 49ers practice Wed Apr 26, 06:18 PM
San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (undisclosed), C Jeremy Zuttah (undisclosed), TE Je'Ron Hamm (leg), RB Raheem Mostert (undisclosed), LB Eli Harold (toe) and TE Blake Bell (head) did not participate in practice Wednesday, April 26.
|Footballguys view: Ellington has a chance to be the #3 receiver after an injury denied him that opportunity last year, but he needs to stay healthy. Jeremy Kerley is his main competition for the job.|

49ers | 49ers could take Leonard Fournette Tue Apr 25, 10:53 PM
Louisiana State RB Leonard Fournette could go to the San Francisco 49ers in the draft, as 'scuttlebutt in league circles' on Monday, April 24, was that the team might take him No. 2 overall.
|Footballguys view: Carlos Hyde is in the last year of his rookie deal and he hasn't been durable enough to feel like he's a lock for a second contract, so this isn't totally outlandish. Still, it makes more sense for the 49ers to go elsewhere with the pick and it's not likely to happen.|
49ers | Tim Barnes to work out for 49ers Mon Apr 24, 12:40 PM
Free-agent C Tim Barnes (Rams) will work out for the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, April 22.Link to story
49ers | Mitchell Trubisky an option at No. 2 Mon Apr 24, 08:08 AM
North Carolina QB Mitchell Trubisky is a strong consideration for the San Francisco 49ers at No. 2 overall in the 2017 NFL draft.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers would love to find a way to trade for Kirk Cousins (Washington), but that may not come to fruition. They are in need of a franchise quarterback, and they may think Trubisky is that guy. With only 13 games started at North Carolina, there's not a lot of film on the rookie. His mechanics need a lot of work and so does his decision making under pressure. Trubisky needs time to develop, but if the 49ers draft him he'd have a better chance to start in 2017. Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley are currently the top quarterbacks on the 49ers roster.|

49ers | San Francisco to meet with Leonard Fournette Mon Apr 17, 06:03 PM
Louisiana State RB Leonard Fournette is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers this week, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: The 49ers are going to have a very RB friendly offense under new head coach Kyle Shanahan. Fournette has the build of a stud running back at the pro level, and mixing him with Shanahan's offense would be gold (GOLD JERRY GOLD!!1!). The 49ers have the 2nd overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft.|
49ers | Carlos Hyde still has support Fri Apr 14, 10:10 PM
San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde can be a 'highly productive player,' according to general manager John Lynch, and Lynch said he hopes Hyde approaches the season like a player that has something to prove.
|Footballguys view: Hyde is in a contract year, and he's in one of the most RB-friendly systems in the league. If he stays healthy and produces as the starter, Hyde could have a strong season...and certainly a fantasy relevant one. However, earlier reports indicate the 49ers are looking for RB talent at some point in the 2017 NFL draft. Stay tuned.|
