49ers | Frank Gore on track to play?    Thu Dec 18, 06:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore (concussion) continues through the concussion protocol this week, but head coach Jim Harbaugh anticipates Gore suiting up in Week 16 against the San Diego Chargers Saturday, Dec. 20. Gore was limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 18, after sitting out Wednesday, Dec. 17.

Footballguys view: Gore should get most of the carries, but we have no clue whether he will put up good numbers or not give the inconsistency of his carries. At best he's an RB3, even though he could put more yards if he was used better. That's not the case though, so don't expect more than RB3 numbers.

  49ers | Carlos Hyde doesn't practice    Thu Dec 18, 05:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (ankle) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Footballguys view: We don't expect Hyde to play or be much of a factor if he does. We'd avoid him this week, it's just too risky.

49ers | Frank Gore, Michael Crabtree limited    Thu Dec 18, 05:41 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore (concussion) and WR Michael Crabtree (back) were limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Footballguys view: The San Francisco 49ers have had a long season, but they won't roll over and die for San Diego this week, and in fact will probably do fine offensively. Gore has not been consistent this season, so he is no more than an RB3 this week, since we never know what his workload will be.

San Francisco 49ers RBs Frank Gore (concussion) and Carlos Hyde (ankle) did not take part in practice Wednesday, Dec. 17.

49ers | Carlos Hyde doesn't expect to play    Wed Dec 17, 05:31 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (knee, back) received good news from his MRI results, but he said it would take a miracle for him to play in Week 16 against the San Diego Chargers.

Footballguys view: Frank Gore is dealing with a concussion right now, so the 49ers may be forced to start Alphonso Smith on Saturday against the Chargers. Stay tuned.

49ers | Frank Gore visits doctor    Wed Dec 17, 02:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore (concussion) visited with a doctor at the team's facility Tuesday, Dec. 16, as part of the NFL's concussion protocol. Gore did not participate in practice, and must pass the designated steps to be cleared for Week 16.

Footballguys view: Gore will need to be cleared by an independent physician before he is cleared to resume practicing. Both Gore and Carlos Hyde are banged up right now, so the 49ers could be starting Alphonso Smith at RB this Saturday against the Chargers.

49ers | Sign Phillip Tanner    Wed Dec 17, 02:26 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed RB Phillip Tanner (Bills) Wednesday, Dec. 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are looking for running back help because both Frank Gore (concussion) and Carlos Hyde (ankle, back) are banged up. We could see Alphonso Smith get the start for the 49ers this week.

49ers | Nick Moody likely to start    Tue Dec 16, 07:30 PM

49ers | Chris Borland could be done for the year    Tue Dec 16, 05:55 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland (ankle) may not play again this season, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Fangio said Borland being able to play before the season ended 'would be a stretch right now.'

Footballguys view: Ouch. The rookie linebacker had been coming through in a big way for the 49ers defense. Borland always had a nose for the football in college at Wisconsin, but he proved as a rookie that he could cover in the pros as well.

49ers | Sign Desmond Bishop    Tue Dec 16, 11:27 AM

The San Francisco 49ers signed LB Desmond Bishop (Cardinals) Tuesday, Dec. 16. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers had to make this move because Chris Borland is banged up with an ankle injury. Bishop is not the same player he used to be, and he has bounced off and on the Cardinals roster in 2014.

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (knee, back) said he injured his knee and his back in Week 15, but neither injury is severe.

Footballguys view: We're likely to see Hyde limited in practice this week. The 49ers are going to be cautious with the rookie as he deals with these multiple injuries. They'll also be monitoring Frank Gore as he goes through the concussion protocol this week after he was forced from the Week 15 game against the Seahawks with a concussion.

San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland (ankle) left the Week 15 game against the Seattle Seahawks due to an ankle injury. He checked back into the lineup, but then left again.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick owned by Seattle    Sun Dec 14, 02:39 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has been markedly worse versus the Seattle Seahawks than every other NFL franchise in his career. He has averaged only 164 passing yards per game against Seattle, which is 59.5 fewer than his NFL-wide average. Kaepernick has a QB rating 45.1 points lower versus the Seahawks than the rest of the league (95.7), while throwing a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 1-to-3 versus Seattle and 3-to-1 against every other team.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick less effective rushing    Fri Dec 12, 09:35 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is averaging 6.2 rush attempts per game this year compared to 5.8 attempts last season, but his yards per attempt have fallen from 5.7 to 4.7.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is rushing less, he's less successful when he does run and his passes are still all over the place. We could see the 49ers look for other options at quarterback based on his performance this season. Head coach Jim Harbaugh could be bounced, and he was a big Kaepernick supporter. Bottom line is we could see multiple changes for the 49ers in 2015.

  49ers | Vernon Davis a non-factor in red zone    Thu Dec 11, 09:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has not been targeted in the red zone since Week 1 of the season.

Footballguys view: Davis has been a fantasy disaster this year. It's doubtful that he's even on any rosters in redraft leagues at this point.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick has struggled vs. SEA    Thu Dec 11, 07:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has struggled so far in his career against the Seattle Seahawks, who the team faces this week. Kaepernick has thrown two touchdowns and seven interceptions in four games played against the Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick actually had the best game of any quarterback to face Seattle in the playoffs last year, including Peyton Manning and Drew Brees, but he has lost a lot of edge and confidence since then.

49ers | Vernon Davis wants to be involved    Thu Dec 11, 04:05 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has been frustrated with his role in the team's offense this year. "For me, it's all about coming here, showing up and doing what I have to do to contribute," Davis said. "As far as not getting the ball, (I) leave it up to the offensive coordinator. It's his call." Davis is only averaging 4.1 targets per game after averaging 5.5 targets per game last season. He's also dropped 6 of 31 catchable passes this year, and his 19.4 percent drop rate is the second highest among tight ends in the league, according to Pro Football Focus. Davis' blocking skills have also declined.

Footballguys view: Everything seems to be coming apart at the seams in San Francisco, and everyone is unhappy. What this team will look like in a year is anyone's guess, but there might be some significant changes in the offing. Davis' owners share his frustration given his lack of production, which will probably continue this week. Don't put him in your lineup as he is no better than a TE3. Most of you moved on a long time ago.

49ers | Frank Gore getting stagnant    Wed Dec 10, 02:41 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore averaged 5.3 yards on 12 carries in the team's Week 14 loss to the Oakland Raiders, and the team called 38 passing plays against just 14 carries. "It's hard to get in a rhythm," Gore said. "As players, you have to be in a rhythm on the field to be successful. And it's been tough all year to get in a rhythm."

Footballguys view: The 49ers are a hot mess right now. They need to get back to basics and get back on the winning track after losing to Oakland. Those basics include using Frank Gore a lot more.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore waived    Mon Dec 8, 06:42 PM

The San Francisco 49ers waived RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) from the Reserve/Non-Injury Football list Monday, Dec. 8.

Footballguys view: His career is likely over. This makes us incredibly sad for a couple of reasons. First, Lattimore is a fantastic young man with a great work ethic and attitude. Second, he had elite gifts as a running back before two devastating knee injuries shortened his career at South Carolina.
