49ers | DeAndre Smelter not limited    Wed May 18, 06:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter (knee) has been practicing without restrictions this offseason.

Footballguys view: Good news as Smelter is coming off a December ACL tear. Smelter is a big-bodied receiver with good physicality who will give the Niners quarterback - whoever it ends up being - a big target to throw to on shorter routes.

49ers | Anquan Boldin not contacted by 49ers    Wed May 18, 06:17 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) has not been contacted by head coach Chip Kelly since early February.

Footballguys view: The Niners could use a veteran presence but Boldin is past his prime and may not hold up well in the high-tempo offense Kelly wants to run. He still might land elsewhere though.

49ers | New duties for Bruce Miller    Tue May 17, 08:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers FB Bruce Miller has switched exclusively to tight end this offseason after running backs coach Tom Rathman informed Miller that he longer had room for another back.

Footballguys view: There's not really a place for a fullback in Chip Kelly's offense. We'll see how Miller makes the transition to the TE position. As a tight end, Miller will compete with guys like Vance McDonald, Garrett Celek and Blake Bell (a deep dynasty favorite of ours).

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not falling behind    Tue May 17, 03:35 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is not falling behind QB Blaine Gabbert despite still rehabilitating his injuries, according to head coach Chip Kelly. '[Kaepernick] has a great grasp of what we're doing,' Kelly said. 'I'm really impressed by both [Gabbert] and him and their intelligence and being able to pick up what we're trying to do.'

Footballguys view: We're not so sure about that. The Kelly offense isn't overly complex, but getting into a rhythm within the system is a must...and Kaepernick isn't healthy enough to do that just yet. We see Gabbert as the uninspiring front-runner in this competition. Kelly said he hasn't set a timetable for when the starter will be announced.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick working hard    Tue May 17, 01:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has made a good first impression with his work ethic to the new coaching staff, despite asking for a trade earlier in the offseason. He could wind up starting in Week 1. 'Works his butt off in rehab, great with the coaches, learning the offense quickly, I like him a lot,' one coach said.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is recovering from three offseason surgeries, and he's lost some weight in the process. He needs to bulk back up and win the starting job in the new Chip Kelly system. His main competition is veteran Blaine Gabbert. Like Kaepernick, Gabbert has the athleticism to fit in the Kelly offense but he needs to improve his play under pressure. No matter how this shakes out, the 49ers have one of the worst QB situations in the league.

49ers | Chip Kelly impressed with Blaine Gabbert    Mon May 16, 01:38 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has impressed new head coach Chip Kelly with his athleticism in offseason workouts. 'He's extremely athletic,' Kelly began. 'It's interesting, the three of them, if you look at Driskel, Blaine and Kap, they're all 6-4 plus, and all can run. All of them are at 4.6 (seconds in the 40-yard dash) or under 4.6, which is kind of rare to have three guys that can do the same thing. It's beneficial to you.'

Footballguys view: Weep for the 49ers football fans. A rich history at QB which includes all-time greats like Joe Montana and Steve Young is now entrusted to....Blaine Gabbert. Perhaps Gabbert can fit in the Kelly system, but we are doubtful about his ability to be a quality starter. When healthy, Colin Kaepernick will be able to push Gabbert for the starting job.

49ers | Carlos Hyde praised by head coach    Mon May 16, 01:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde was praised by new head coach Chip Kelly recently. 'Carlos is a stud. He's been full-go since we started in the beginning of April,' Kelly said. 'Participated in everything. And he's as advertised. To have someone that size that is that agile, has that vision, it's really impressive to see him work every day. There have been no restrictions on him at all. He's full clear, 100 percent, and he's going. He's really good, we're really excited about him.'

Footballguys view: Hyde is a one-cut back who should work nicely in the inside-zone, outside-zone option offense that Kelly implements. From a fantasy perspective, we see Hyde as a low-end RB2. His current ADP is RB18 (4.07) in 12-team PPR/flex leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to compete when healthy    Sat May 14, 08:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) will compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting quarterback job once training camp begins and Kaepernick is closer to full strength, head coach Chip Kelly said.

Footballguys view: Gabbert has a good head start on Kaepernick, and it may be difficult for him to catch up. Not only does Kaepernick have to get healthy after three offseason surgeries, he also needs to put more weight on. Recent pictures of Kaeperncik show that he's really thin right now compared to his previous physique. Add in the fact that some think Kaepernick doesn't want to be there and we think this is looking more and more like Gabbert's job.

49ers | Anquan Boldin still an option for 49ers    Fri May 13, 06:01 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) is still an option for the San Francisco 49ers, but the team likes their younger receivers, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Footballguys view: Boldin may have to wait until we get closer to training camp to find a new home. The veteran should be able to latch on with some team later in the year.

49ers | San Francisco not ready to name QB    Fri May 13, 04:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) and QB Blaine Gabbert are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job during training camp, and head coach Chip Kelly said he has no idea who the starting quarterback will be in 2016.

Footballguys view: Gabbert has to be considered the frontrunner as of right now. Kaepernick is recovering from three surgeries, and he may not be near full strength until training camp. There's also the question of whether or not Kaepernick even wants to be in San Francisco after nearly getting traded to the Broncos earlier this year.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not cleared yet    Fri May 13, 04:17 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) has not been cleared to fully participate in offseason workouts at this point but may be able to participate during the mandatory minicamp in June.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is recovering from three surgeries, and he may not be at full strength until training camp hits. Some thought he would get traded before the draft, but now it looks like he's going to compete with Blaine Gabbert for the starting job with the 49ers.

  49ers | Fast-paced minicamp for 49ers    Wed May 11, 06:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has already made an impression on his new team following minicamp. 'It's quicker, you're up to the line of scrimmage faster,' wide receiver Torrey Smith said. 'I actually like it because I'm usually the last person to jog back to the huddle anyway. Just get lined up, you can catch your break there and you can also catch the defense off guard.' TE Garrett Celek said the simplicity of the offense enables them to play faster. The offensive players said it will take some time to adjust to the new approach, but Celek said once it clicks it will be go, go, go.

Footballguys view: We've heard all about this before and the results were mixed at best for the Eagles. Will it be different this time out? And what does it mean for Blaine Gabbert and Colin Kaepernick? We'll know very soon.

49ers | Jarryd Hayne could see a jump    Tue May 10, 10:40 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jarryd Hayne is expected to produce more in his second season, according to the team. 'I think you'll see a jump from him,'' said 49ers executive Paraag Marathe, who still oversees the team's football analytics department. 'You look at elite athletes and those guys who have that willpower and desire to succeed and there's something special in them.'

Footballguys view: Hayne bounced from the team's practice squad to the active roster last year and had 17 carries for 52 yards and six catches for 27 yards. He also contributed on special teams, returning eight punts for a total of 76 yards. With Carlos Hyde at the top of the depth chart, Hayne will compete for a reserve spot with guys like Mike Davis, rookie Kelvin Taylor and Shaun Draughn.

49ers | Jeff Driskel thinks he's perfect fit    Fri May 6, 01:54 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel said he thinks he's a perfect fit for the 49ers. He said he's comfortable running the zone-read system. 'I've done it a lot,' Driskel said. 'Just about every offense I've been in, I've done the zone read. It's a play I feel like I'm good at. I got a good feel for what the defensive end is going to do. And have a good feel for hitting it up inside when the defense collapses on me. So it's a play I've done before in the past, and I know it's a part of the offense here.'

Footballguys view: Driskel is big and very athletic. He's worth monitoring if only because of what the Chip Kelly offense made out of Nick Foles for one year, and for Driskel's upside as a runner.

  49ers | Colin Kaepernick's rehab on track    Fri May 6, 12:38 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) is doing an 'awfully good job' with his rehab, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are stuck with Kaepernick as they were unable to trade him to the Broncos before the draft. His shoulder was one of three surgeries that he's recovering from. Recent pictures show that Kaepernick is skinny and needs to bulk back up when he's ready to start working out as he normally does. We'll see if Blaine Gabbert can beat out Kaepernick for the starting job with the 49ers in Chip Kelly's new system.

49ers | Jeff Driskel signs deal with 49ers    Thu May 5, 05:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 5. The deal is worth up to $2.629 million, including a $112,540 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: We're interested to see how Driskel develops as a pro. We like his athleticism and ability to challenge a defense vertically. The Chip Kelly system is fitting for his skill set.

49ers | Jeff Driskel a fit for Chip Kelly's offense?    Wed May 4, 08:30 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jeff Driskel's athletic ability impressed general manager Trent Baalke, and Driskel felt the 49ers would be a good fit for him because Louisiana Tech's offense had similarities to Chip Kelly's.

Footballguys view: We really like the addition of Driskel. His college career went off track at Florida, but he transferred to Louisiana Tech and put up a strong season in 2015. He followed that up with an impressive performance during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year. Driskel is not afraid to challenge a defense with his arm, and he's athletic enough to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. In all our dynasty formats we'll be monitoring this young QB.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert showing leadership    Wed May 4, 03:54 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has taken control of the 49ers' offseason program while QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) recovers from multiple surgeries. TE Garrett Celek said Gabbert is showing leadership and making good decisions on the field during workouts. 'I think he's definitely developing more and more as the days go on,' Celek said. 'But, right now, we're all in the same boat learning this offense.' OG Zane Beadles said Gabbert carries himself well in the locker room and acts like a professional, adding that Gabbert is always studying and trying to become better.

Footballguys view: Gabbert has a shot to impress with Kaepernick on the mend. He's athletic enough to run the Chip Kelly system, and if Gabbert gets rid of the ball quickly he won't be susceptible to seeing ghosts (feeling the pass rush when it's not there) like he has been in a more traditional offense.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick resumes throwing    Tue May 3, 10:56 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) has resumed throwing a 'bit', according to a league source Tuesday, May 3, and it appears he will stay with the team to compete with QB Blaine Gabbert for the starting job.

Footballguys view: The Denver Broncos were considering trading for Kaepernick, but after the 2016 NFL draft it appears he is now staying put. The Broncos added a quarterback in the first round, as did the New York Jets, another potential landing spot for Kaepernick. We'll see if Kaepernick can beat out Gabbert in the new Chip Kelly system in San Francisco.

  49ers | Eric Reid's option picked up    Mon May 2, 10:45 AM

San Francisco 49ers FS Eric Reid had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Reid is a talented safety who can patrol a large area of the field. The 49ers may want to work out a new long-term deal with Reid in the near future. The option will pay $5.6 million in 2017.

49ers | Joshua Garnett has chance to start    Fri Apr 29, 05:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers OG Joshua Garnett played left guard at Stanford and is expected to be the starting left guard as a rookie because he was a first-round choice. OG Zane Beadles has been working at left guard during offseason workouts but likely will not win the job.

Footballguys view: We still don't love the move back into the first for Garnett, but as the Niners were high on him we expect him to get the job. If he doesn't - if Beadles beats him out - things will look ugly in Santa Clara.

49ers | Joshua Garnett selected by SF    Thu Apr 28, 11:19 PM

The San Francisco 49ers selected Stanford OG Joshua Garnett with the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28. The Niners traded up with the Kansas City Chiefs for the pick.

Footballguys view: This was a head-scratcher, as we can't really figure out who is going to jump up and grab a guard. Kelly has picked a long list of Pac12 guys since hitting the NFL, so this isn't a surprise from that standpoint.

49ers | DeForest Buckner lands with Niners    Thu Apr 28, 09:00 PM

The San Francisco 49ers selected Oregon DE DeForest Buckner with the seventh overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Niners continue to try and rebuild this defense. Buckner can control the point of attack with length and power, but he has above average pass rush potential as well.

49ers | Paxton Lynch not contacted by 49ers    Thu Apr 28, 05:44 PM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch did not have any contact with the San Francisco 49ers before the NFL draft. A confidant of 49ers head coach Chip Kelly was present at his pro day, however.

Footballguys view: This doesn't mean anything as teams don't always talk to guys they draft, and as the article points out, someone Kelly trusts was there. We don't think they go quarterback, but Lynch could be an interesting fit for the Niners, and the combination of mobility and arm strength would meld well with Kelly's offense.

49ers | Anthony Davis not interested in losing    Wed Apr 27, 10:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers OT Anthony Davis, who announced his retirement but hasn't filed official paperwork with the league, posted on his official Twitter account Wednesday, April 27, that he does not 'want to work with a front office or anyone else who seemingly doesn't want to win as bad as I do.'

Footballguys view: That's an interesting quote. Does he mean that Trent Baalke and company really are as big a mess as we all suspected? Or is this a contract move? The Niners need offensive line help and if they are smart they might want to add offensive line talent early in the draft to fix this offensive line.

49ers | San Fran not interested in Sam Bradford    Wed Apr 27, 12:31 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said 'there's been no talk internally' about trading for Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford. Bradford's agent, Tom Condon, has confirmed that Bradford has requested to be traded. Bradford's former coach, Chip Kelly, is the new 49ers coach.

Footballguys view: Kelly already overpaid for Bradford once in Philadelphia, he is very unlikely to do it again for a team in rebuilding mode. Bradford will either be the bridge to Carson Wentz or a Denver Bronco this year.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not throwing    Wed Apr 27, 12:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder, thumb, knee) is attending the team's voluntary minicamp this week but hasn't resume throwing.

Footballguys view: Perhaps this is part of what is holding up the potential deal between the 49ers and Broncos. Kaepernick did come to the Broncos facility earlier in the offseason, so they might know more about his medical situation than we do.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick trade may still happen    Wed Apr 27, 11:07 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick could still be traded this week, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Footballguys view: This is no surprise, as the draft acts as a "deadline" for teams to make deals because they won't get their compensation until next year if they wait for this year's draft to end before sealing a deal. Teams are also making decisions in the draft based on their current roster, so it is important to square that away during this NFL plate tectonic shift. Kaepernick has been rumored to be a Bronco as long as the 49ers get a quarterback in this draft.

49ers | DeForest Buckner coveted by Niners    Wed Apr 27, 10:39 AM

Oregon DE DeForest Buckner is 'desperately coveted' by the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Buckner is similar to Calais Campbell and he came up through Chip Kelly's Oregon pipeline. If he gets past the Chargers at #3, he is likely to fall to the 49ers.

49ers | Sam Bradford shuns San Francisco     Tue Apr 26, 08:50 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is not interested in playing for the San Francisco 49ers and head coach Chip Kelly, according to NFL Network's Jeff Darlington.

Footballguys view: It shouldn't come as any surprise that Bradford (who played under Kelly with the Eagles) would not want to be reunited in San Francisco. Bradford is upset because the Eagles moved up to the No.2 pick for a QB in the 2016 NFL draft. He's reportedly demanding a trade, but so far there have been no takers.

49ers | Darius Powe has strong showing for SF    Mon Apr 25, 02:49 AM

University of California WR Darius Powe had a strong showing, according to a source, when the team worked out Cal QB Jared Goff.

Footballguys view: Kenny Lawler and Trevor Davis are the two Cal WRs to keep an eye on in the NFL draft. Both should be mid-round picks with varying upside. Powe is likely to be an undrafted free agent, but it sounds like the 49ers might be willing to take a chance on him.

49ers | Niners have visited two wideouts    Mon Apr 25, 02:48 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have had official visits with Georgia WR Malcolm Mitchell and Texas Christian University WR Kolby Listenbee.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is the player to watch here. We like his route-running ability and savvy when coming back to the quarterback. He's tough when going over the middle, and Mitchell has the ball-tracking ability to be used effectively on deep shots. Listenbee should go off the board a bit later than Mitchell. He's a deep receiver who can take the top off the defense in a hurry.

49ers | SF has shown interest in Pharoh Cooper    Mon Apr 25, 02:47 AM

The San Francisco 49ers have shown an interest in South Carolina WR Pharoh Cooper, and his skills in the return game could make him a factor from Day 1 if the team adds him in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Cooper is a wide receiver, but he's got the open-field running ability of a running back. He can make defenders miss in the open field, but he's also willing to run through arm tackles if need be. He didn't run a full route tree at South Carolina, and Cooper is best suited to run intermediate routes where his run-after-the-catch ability can be properly utilized.

49ers | Will get extended look at Eric Rogers    Mon Apr 25, 02:42 AM

The San Francisco 49ers coaching staff will get its first good look at WR Eric Rogers this week.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are looking everywhere for help at the WR position. Rogers was signed January after posting 87 receptions, 1,448 yards and 10 touchdowns in 17 games for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League.

49ers | Anquan Boldin could return to 49ers    Sun Apr 24, 01:38 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) could be sought back by the San Francisco 49ers if head coach Chip Kelly is unimpressed with the wide receivers' performances this week at minicamp.

Footballguys view: Boldin is not the same player he used to be, but he can at least give a team veteran depth. In 14 games last year with the 49ers, Boldin caught 69 passes for 789 yards and four touchdowns. That ranked him as the 43rd fantasy WR in 2015 in standard-scoring leagues. We can't see his numbers getting much better in 2016 if he's retained by the 49ers.

49ers | San Francisco met with Kenneth Dixon    Fri Apr 22, 07:55 PM

Louisiana Tech RB Kenneth Dixon recently met with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Dixon is an explosive back who can make defenders miss in the open field. While not the biggest back, Dixon is willing to grind it out between the tackles for tough yards. He's likely a second- or third-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is drawing plenty of interest, and according to sources the San Francisco 49ers are expected to be the early frontrunner for his services.

49ers | Glenn Dorsey making progress    Wed Apr 20, 11:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Glenn Dorsey (knee) is making 'great progress,' according to general manager Trent Baalke, as the defensive tackle makes his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. However, it is too soon to say if he'll be ready for the regular season opener. 'I'm never going to give a definitive because you don't know,' Baalke said. 'You could always have a setback, but right now he's made great progress. Looks good.'

Footballguys view: The Niners could use the help defensively, but they won't push him and risk setting him back. If he can do some work during camp, that will be a good sign, but we are guessing the Niners will plan not to have him for a chunk of the season, just in case.

49ers | GM texting with Anthony Davis    Wed Apr 20, 11:08 PM

Retired OT Anthony Davis and San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke have not had any in-person discussion, although the two have exchanged text messages. Davis has not yet applied for reinstatement after retiring from the league last year. 'I'm not going to get into our conversations within the media,' Baalke said. 'We've had several text messages back and forth and that's the extent of the conversations.'

Footballguys view: Maybe Baalke is just looking for dinner ideas around Santa Clara. Davis has been out for a year but planned to come back for 2016. We're still waiting for him to apply for reinstatement though so we're not sure what he intends right now.

49ers | Eric Reid will return in 2017    Wed Apr 20, 11:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers FS Eric Reid will either have his fifth-year option picked up, or he will be signed to an extension, general manager Trent Baalke said Wednesday, April 20. 'We're definitely looking at both options,' Baalke said. 'If we could get something done longer, we'll look at that.'

Footballguys view: It's a good move for a team which saw the departure of a lot of vets during 2015's off season. Reid will continue to bring consistency to the secondary for the Niners.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could still be traded    Wed Apr 20, 04:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick may still be traded this offseason, according to general manager Treny Baalke. Baalke said he would never say never in regards to a trade, but he does not want to package Kaepernick as part of a trade. Baalke added that the 49ers still want Kaepernick on the roster, but he has not completely ruled out trading the quarterback.

Footballguys view: So really we've just learned nothing new, but at least Baalke was creative in the way he said that nothing. We still think it's possible Kaepernick lands with the Broncos, and we still think he could be successful either with the Niners or another team. But it seems like the situation remains fluid and cloudy (or made up of cloudy fluid) for now.
