49ers | Colin Kaepernick wants to leave    Tue Feb 2, 06:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick wants to leave the 49ers and join the New York Jets, according to sources. The Jets are aware of and intrigued by Kaepernick's aspiration, but they are still in the early stages of their offseason planning and evaluation, according to sources.

Footballguys view: It's interesting that Kaepernick would want to leave now that Chip Kelly is the head coach. If somehow/someway he ends up with the Jets, we'd be intrigued...largely because of OC Chan Gailey. For years, Gailey has been able to adapt his system to get the best out of his quarterbacks.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick could reclaim starting gig    Fri Jan 29, 07:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers chief executive officer Jed York can see QB Colin Kaepernick winning his starting job back in 2016 if he is healthy. 'There's no question in my mind,' York replied. 'I've always had a very, very high opinion of Kap. Kap's a great kid, he's done a lot of great things for us. And again, this is a fresh start for everybody.'

Footballguys view: Kaepernick has the athleticism to fit into Chip Kelly's system. However, he needs to prove that he can make quick decisions and accurate throws as a passer in order to flourish. The Kelly system is somewhat simple, and mainly uses tempo as a weapon. They'll leave a defender unblocked opposite play side, and that's where Kaepernick's athleticism should be able to freeze that player on the edge. If Kaepernick doesn't throw accurately, then teams will respect his rushing ability less and try to force a quick throw.

  49ers | Jim O'Neil will coordinate 49ers defense    Tue Jan 26, 05:54 PM

Former Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Jim O'Neil has been hired by the San Francisco 49ers for the same position, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With Chip Kelly's offense, the defense is often put in bad positions as the team goes 3-and-out on the other side. O'Neil's defense fell apart in 2015 after having a decent 2014 season. We have a feeling the 49ers defense could be among the worst in the league in 2016.

49ers | Eric Rogers signing    Wed Jan 20, 03:47 PM

Free-agent WR Eric Rogers (CFL) is signing a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers Wednesday, Jan. 20. The deal comes with a $125,000 signing bonus, $75,000 in bonuses and a $100,000 base salary guarantee.

Footballguys view: This is one of the largest deals for a Canadian player, and it shows the value of Rogers in the NFL. A Division III (California Lutheran) undrafted free agent in 2013, Rogers has been getting interest from about half the teams in the NFL before agreeing to sign with the 49ers. He's a big receiver with a nose for the end zone.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick a good fit for offense?    Fri Jan 15, 09:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's running ability could make head coach Chip Kelly's offensive system more effective. When Kelly was with the Philadelphia Eagles, the offense averaged 6.6 yards per play when QB Michael Vick played and 5.7 yards per play with any other quarterback.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is an interesting fit for Kelly's system...if the team keeps him on the roster and he wins the starting job. The young quarterback is one of the most athletic in the league, but he's got to improve as a passer. He's a pure-sight thrower who seems uncomfortable throwing anticipatory routes. If Kelly keeps him and he impresses, Kaepernick could put up nice numbers in 2016.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick has guaranteed contract    Fri Jan 15, 12:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's 2016 contract becomes fully guaranteed for injury come April 1, and the 49ers would have to pay him $11.9 million. Many believe the 49ers might try to trade or release him before then.

Footballguys view: Early reports indicate that Kaepernick is not going to be the team's quarterback in 2016. New head coach Chip Kelly may want to go with a better passer, and he'll make a move to find a different quarterback. We can't imagine any team trading for Kaepernick, so look for him to be released before the April 1st deadline.

49ers | Chip Kelly's pace not too different    Thu Jan 14, 02:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers new head coach Chip Kelly ran a play every 22.7 seconds with the Philadelphia Eagles this past season, which was the fastest in the league. The 49ers were fifth with a play every 26.5 seconds, which ranked fifth.

Footballguys view: The key is--and neither team was good at it--to get yards while doing it.A rapid pace with too many short drives results in a defense which does not have the time to rest and come back on the field fresh. Kelly has a lot of work to do on this roster to make this a reality.

49ers | RG III an option in San Francisco?    Thu Jan 14, 02:14 PM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III could be an option for the San Francisco 49ers to compete with QB Colin Kaepernick after the 49ers hired head coach Chip Kelly, in the opinion of USA TODAY Sports' Jim Corbett.

Footballguys view: We're a long way from any moves here, and it's unlikely the Niners will give up picks for him, so it will then depend on when Washington releases him and what Griffin's options are.

49ers | Chip Kelly hired in San Fran    Thu Jan 14, 01:37 PM

Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly was hired by the San Francisco 49ers Thursday, Jan. 14, as their new head coach. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: So the Niners fired/forced out a guy in Jom Harbaugh who was a great coach but had an ego conflict with GM Trent Baalke. They wait a year and now replace him with a guy who was fired from the Eagles because of an ego issue? This should end well. Whether this also means Colin Kaepernick might have a coach who will try and do something with him remains to be seen, though he isn't exactly a perfect fit for what Kelly does.

49ers | SF not a match for Tom Coughlin    Thu Jan 14, 01:07 PM

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin doesn't see the San Francisco 49ers head coaching job being a fit, according to sources. The location away from his family on the east coast is a big issue for him.

Footballguys view: It'd be hard imagining Coughlin uprooting his life for that mess. We're not shocked by the decision at all and find it telling how few top candidates are dipping their toes there.

49ers | Niners down to two premium names    Thu Jan 14, 12:43 PM

Former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly and former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan are the two finalists for the San Francisco 49ers' head coaching vacancy, according to league sources, Thursday, Jan. 14. The decision is likely to be made in the next 24 hours.

Footballguys view: The Kelly thing is bizarre--didn't they just fire Jim Harbaugh because of his ego? Now you're bringing in Chip Kelly who got fired because of his ego? Shannahan is also an odd--though not nearly as odd--fit. San Francisco is a mess.

49ers | Mike Shanahan strong candidate in SF    Wed Jan 13, 05:26 PM

Former Washington Redskins head coach Mike Shanahan is strongly back in the mix for the San Francisco 49ers' vacant head coaching position. He has already met with the 49ers regarding the job.

Footballguys view: Shanahan was the team's offensive coordinator the last time the 49ers won the Super Bowl. He then won two more Super Bowls as the head coach in Denver. After that, Shanahan failed to make an impact with Washington. It will be interesting to see if he can regain his status as a top head coach in the NFL.

49ers | San Francisco passing on Hue Jackson    Tue Jan 12, 02:42 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson is no longer being considered by the San Francisco 49ers for their head coaching position. It is possible that the 49ers double back, according to Tim Kawakami of The Mercury News, but for now the 49ers are looking elsewhere.

Footballguys view: Interesting. Perhaps with Tom Coughlin interviewing the team has had a change of heart. Just yesterday, Jackson was considered the front-runner for the position.

49ers | Tom Coughlin interviews with Niners    Tue Jan 12, 12:25 PM

Former New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin is interviewing with the San Francisco 49ers for their head coaching vacancy Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: Even though Hue Jackson is considered to be the front-runner with the 49ers, they're still going to look at other options. Coughlin has clearly not retired, but instead just needed a change after years of missing the playoffs with the Giants. The 49ers are in a rebuilding process, and Coughlin might be able to get them back on the right track.

49ers | Hue Jackson could be new 49ers head coach    Sun Jan 10, 01:49 PM

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Hue Jackson could be named the new San Francisco 49ers head coach Sunday, Jan. 10, if Jackson's interview goes well.

Footballguys view: Jackson is a creative coach, and that's an intriguing match with the 49ers. They quickly moved on from the Jim Tomsula era, and Jackson might get hired in the near future. Now that Adam Gase has been hired by the Dolphins, Jackson might be the next-hottest coach on the market.

49ers | Trent Baalke to remain GM for 49ers    Mon Jan 4, 02:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager Trent Baalke will remain with the team.

Footballguys view: Baalke won a power struggle with former head coach Jim Harbaugh, and he's going to try to get the team back on track after the disastrous Jim Tomsula one-year era. He needs to do a better job of finding quality talent as the 49ers have multiple holes to fill on both sides of the ball.

  49ers | Blaine Gabbert throws for 354    Sun Jan 3, 10:55 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 28 of 44 passes for 354 yards, a touchdown an interception in a 19-16 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Gabbert wasn't a worldbeater by any means, but he was much better than expected when he took over for Colin Kaepernick, and he might have made himself a lot of money as a career backup with this stretch of competent play in a bad situation.

San Francisco 49ers RB DuJuan Harris had 16 carries for 67 yards and eight catches for 86 yards in a 19-16 win over the St. Louis Rams in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Harris had a few shots at extended playing time late this season and did well for himself. He could fit in as a third running back somewhere next season.

49ers | Niners interested in Chip Kelly    Sun Jan 3, 12:40 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are reportedly giving strong consideration to hiring former Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. The organization's thinking regarding current head coach Jim Tomsula changed during the middle of last week after Kelly was released from his contract in Philadelphia.

Footballguys view: Get ready for Kelly to be linked to every open job and some jobs that aren't open.

49ers | Mike Davis activated    Sat Jan 2, 04:13 PM

Updating an earlier report, San Francisco 49ers RB Mike Davis (hand) was activated from short-term Injured Reserve Saturday, Jan. 2.

Footballguys view: Davis has been sidelined since Week 8, but he's made it back for the regular season finale. He'll split time with DuJuan Harris and Kendall Gaskins in the 49ers backfield. We'd like to see Davis get most of the work because of his intriguing upside in dynasty leagues.
