49ers | Reggie Bush being rested    Sun Aug 2, 11:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush was held out of training camp for the second day in a row Sunday, Aug. 2. 'I'm not going to wait to see Reggie tired and (then) give him a break,' head coach Jim Tomsula said. 'He's been doing this for a long time. Our goal is to not get Reggie tired. He's in shape.'

49ers | Bruce Ellington impresses in camp    Sun Aug 2, 11:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington was impressive as the No. 3 receiver during training camp Sunday, Aug. 2, catching a long touchdown from QB Colin Kaepernick and adding an acrobatic catch down the sidelines.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick improving throws    Sat Aug 1, 01:51 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has impressed his teammates this offseason by improving the touch on his passes. FS Eric Reid said he's optimistic about how Kaepernick will do this year, especially with the touch he's seen on deep throws.

Footballguys view: If Kaepernick wants to take the next step as a pro quarterback, he's got to get better as a passer. We're glad that Reid is impressed, but we'll believe it when we see it--especially under pressure. With so many losses on both sides of the ball, the 49ers offense isn't one we're investing a lot in.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman will practice    Sat Aug 1, 10:07 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) passed his conditioning test Friday, July 31, and will be able to participate in practice Aug. 1. Bowman will wear a brace during practice to protect his surgically repaired knee.

Footballguys view: Bowman missed all of the 2014 season due to multiple knee problems, so the team will have to be incredibly cautious with him as he returns to the field this year. He's wearing a bulky brace, and earlier reports indicate that the knee is inconsistent in how it feels. It would be a shock to see him return to All-Pro form his first year back.

49ers | Daniel Kilgore to miss some time    Sat Aug 1, 10:06 AM

San Francisco 49ers C Daniel Kilgore (ankle) will miss at least the first half of training camp because he underwent ankle surgery in June.

Footballguys view: Kilgore has been banged up quite a bit over the last year. He broke his left leg in Week 7 last year, and now this ankle problem which required surgery.

49ers | Carlos Hyde update    Wed Jul 29, 11:11 AM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is not believed to be injured and shouldn't be on the non-football injury list for long.

Footballguys view: Hyde suffered a calf injury during spring drills, but it's not expected to be an issue. We should see him activated from the NFI list in the near future. With Frank Gore gone to the Colts, Hyde is the lead back for the 49ers this year and a low-end RB2 for fantasy owners.

49ers | Two players cleared to practice    Tue Jul 28, 06:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Darnell Dockett (knee) and SS Jimmie Ward (foot) have been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: Dockett missed all of last season for the Cardinals as he tore his ACL last August. The 49ers should ease the aging pass-rusher back into action. He should work as a part-time player when healthy. Ward flashed as a rookie last year before going down in the second half of 2014. He'll likely work as a nickel corner this year, but he's still got the upside to be a quality starter on the outside someday.

49ers | Bruce Ellington looking ready    Tue Jul 21, 09:40 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (hamstring) sat out most of the 2014 season due to injury but a video posted to his Instagram account Tuesday, July 21, makes it seems he's ready to go for the 2015 season.

Footballguys view: YouTube scouting is bad enough, so we're not going to make any determinations about Ellington based off of Instagram, Vine, Periscope, etc. Yes, it looks like he's ready but the preseason will tell the tale. Ellington has speed, but he's also on an offense with a quarterback who has not yet proven he can work through progressions quickly and make good decisions with the football.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick excited about changes    Sun Jul 12, 08:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said he is excited about the upcoming season and believes all the changes this offseason have been for the better. 'I feel very confident in our team,' Kaepernick said. 'I feel people are writing us off, but for us, that's all right.'

Footballguys view: The changes in San Francisco this offseason are too numerous to count...and some of them seemed ominous for the outlook of the franchise. Moving on from former head coach Jim Harbaugh will come with some growing pains, and fantasy owners need to recognize how things will be different for the 49ers in 2015. Kaepernick has a ton of raw talent, but he's not developed into the passer some thought (hoped) he could be. Scrambling quarterbacks can be fine fantasy assets, so adding Kaepernick as a QB2 could pay off. His current ADP is QB19 (12.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | DeAndre Smelter expected to start on NFI list    Fri Jul 10, 03:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter (knee) is expected to begin training camp on the Non-Football Injury list, but the team believes he could be activated at some point during camp. Smelter is working his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Smelter won't have a big opportunity this year with Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith starting, but Boldin might not be around after this year, and the size/speed freak from Georgia Tech would be poised to compete to start in 2016. If he is active Week 1, that will be a huge win for Smelter in his recovery.

49ers | Carlos Hyde tough to bring down    Fri Jul 10, 12:23 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde forced missed tackles on 30.1% of his 83 carries last season, putting him just below Seattle Seahawks RB Marshawn Lynch's rate of 31.4%.

Footballguys view: Hyde is a talented enough back to be a quality fantasy play if he is on a team that can control game scripts and feed him carries, but this 49ers team does not seem to be the group to do that. Reggie Bush will soak up passing down work, leaving Hyde as a matchup RB2/Flex who is going too high in drafts on the promise of a breakout year.

49ers | Offense going to be faster    Sat Jun 27, 04:46 PM

Joe Fann, from 49ers.com, notes the 49ers offense is going to use a faster tempo in 2015. "It's definitely a fast tempo. We're trying to get a lot faster than last year as far as getting to the line. ... As far as the system, it's very similar to what we've run in past years. Some of the terminology is a bit different but there's still familiarity with past years." - wide receiver Anquan Boldin on the 49ers new-look, uptempo offense.

Footballguys view: The 49ers played 1009 snaps last year, a mark that ranked 20th in the NFL in 2014. The league average last year was 1,024, and the league high was 1,127 snaps by (not surprisingly) the Philadelphia Eagles. We have serious questions about the 49ers this year...on both sides of the ball. We'll see if QB Colin Kaepernick can perform better as a passer in 2015. His play will feed the energy for the rest of the offense.

49ers | Carlos Hyde sheds weight    Thu Jun 25, 02:31 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde has shed about 10 pounds from last year's playing weight, which should add to his deceptively light feet and cutting ability. The team is installing zone-blocking concepts, which worked well for Washington Redskins RB Alfred Morris when offensive line coach Chris Foerster was in Washington.

Footballguys view: Getting rid of bad weight is good for Hyde. He's a powerful runner who can be tough to bring down with a head of steam. We'll see if he works well in the zone-blocking scheme which requires RBs to be decisive with the rock. He's got a current ADP of RB22 (4.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Quinton Patton will have opportunity    Sat Jun 20, 01:32 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton has been flashy this offseason and will have a real opportunity to prove himself this year, according to wide receivers coach Ronald Curry.

Footballguys view: He's had a disappointing career up to this point with only six catches in two years. Patton had been buried on the depth chart and has only appeared in 10 games. He's a fine route-runner with the ability to gain separation after the break. Patton will compete with Bruce Ellington and Jerome Simpson for the team's WR3 job.

49ers | Jarryd Hayne had surgery    Fri Jun 19, 07:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jarryd Hayne (foot) recently underwent minor surgery on his left foot to remove a cyst. Hayne said his foot would remain bandaged for 12 days.

Footballguys view: Hayne is the Australian rugby star who is trying to make it in the NFL. He's been criticized on offense as he doesn't run with proper pad level. If Hayne wants to make the team, he'll have to do it with his special teams ability.

49ers | Darius Davis waived    Tue Jun 16, 05:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Darius Davis was waived Tuesday, June 16.

Footballguys view: Davis was added as an undrafted free agent earlier this year. The Henderson State product might have a difficult time latching on with another team. He's got good run-after-the-catch ability and is tough to bring down with the ball in his hands. His speed, quickness and route-running ability need a lot of work if he's going to stick i the pros.

49ers | Sign three players    Tue Jun 16, 02:51 PM

Undrafted free-agents WR Mario Hull (Rice) and PK Corey Acosta (Southern Mississippi) and free-agent C Ben Gottschalk (Buccaneers) signed undisclosed deals with the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, June 16.

Footballguys view: Hull is the guy to watch here in super deep dynasty leagues. He was undrafted out of Rice, but his career seems to be trending in the right direction. In 2014, Hull set career highs in 32 catches for 621 yards and eight touchdowns.

49ers | Jimmie Ward expects to be ready    Sun Jun 14, 09:50 AM

San Francisco 49ers SS Jimmie Ward (foot) said he should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Ward has missed all of OTAs recovering from foot surgery. A first-round pick in 2014, Ward has upside but he's got to stay healthy. He showed improvement as the season went on last year before this foot surgery knocked him out in Week 10. We'll see if he can get healthy and start to build on the experience he gained last year.

49ers | Darnell Dockett to be ready for opener    Tue Jun 9, 03:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Darnell Dockett (knee) said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and will be ready for the regular season opener. Dockett is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Dockett could be a nice starter for the 49ers defense if healthy. He continues to recover in mandatory minicamp and may even begin training camp on the PUP list.

49ers | Carlos Hyde returns     Sat Jun 6, 02:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (leg) returned to organized team activities Friday, June 5, after nursing a minor leg injury.

Footballguys view: Hyde is going to be the lead back for the 49ers this year as they move forward in a new era. The team should be run-heavy on offense to keep things simpler for Colin Kaepernick and the passing game. Hyde is going to be a focal point of the offense. His ADP of RB17 (4.02) in 12-team PPR leagues sounds a bit too high (we like him around RB20) given the uncertain nature of the 49ers.

49ers | Anthony Davis retires    Fri Jun 5, 05:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers OT Anthony Davis announced his retirement from professional football Friday, June 5.

Footballguys view: Another unexpected retirement for the 49ers here. Davis saw his 2014 season cut short by injury, and he only played in seven games. A first-round pick in 2010, Davis still had five years remaining on his contract. Part of his $7.5 million signing bonus may be asked to be returned. Davis is going to take 2015 (and perhaps longer) away from football, but there's a chance he could one day return.

49ers | Kendall Hunter looking good     Thu Jun 4, 02:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) has looked good during organized team activities, but the team has limited his reps during practice, according to head coach Jim Tomsula. 'I think we all have strong feelings for Kendall. He is, you see him out there moving. He's moving around great. But we definitely have a rep count on him. There's a rep count on all of those guys. You've got to keep him corralled. But he's moving around really quick,' Tomsula said.

Footballguys view: Hunter's knee seems to be in great shape, which is important as he is one of several backs who could take over the heavy lifting left behind by Frank Gore. Carlos Hyde looks like he will get first crack at the role, and is currently at an ADP of 4.01, with Reggie Bush behind him with an ADP of 8.07. Hunter could crack the rotation if he's healthy though, and is worth a late-round flier at this point.

49ers | Reggie Bush likes the offense    Sun May 31, 11:22 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush said he has been used in a variety of ways on offense, and he added that he likes what he has seen out of offensive coordinator Geep Chryst.

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see how the 49ers look this season after a somewhat tumultuous offseason. Bush is going to play as a change-of-pace back behind Carlos Hyde now that Frank Gore is with the Colts. Hyde will be the banger between the tackles, while Bush is going to be the back used in space. We could see the 49ers also put him in the slot as a receiver from time to time. Bush has a current ADP of RB39 (8.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Tramaine Brock limited    Sun May 31, 09:46 AM

San Francisco 49ers CB Tramaine Brock (hamstring) has been limited during organized team activities because of what is believed to be a hamstring injury. Brock is expected to be one of the starting cornerbacks this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not given enough time to heal. The 49ers will be careful with him as he works back from this injury.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman taking part in OTAs    Sat May 30, 10:19 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) has been participating in organized team activities but said his knee does not feel like it did before the injury at this point. Bowman has been wearing a brace on his knee but said it limits his quickness and mobility.

Footballguys view: Bowman has no doubt he will return to his pre-injury form, and he acknowledged that the mental side of his rehab has been as tough as the physical side. We'll see if can be a much-needed impact player for the 49ers this season.

49ers | Quinton Patton primed for breakout year?    Tue May 26, 06:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton is feeling much better this offseason than he has in previous seasons, largely because of working out with QB Colin Kaepernick this offseason. 'It's benefitted me knowing we're throwing the ball together and he's telling me what he's seeing and I'm telling him what I'm seeing, and just knowing where to be and when I need to be there,' Patton said.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick in 2013, we've been waiting for Patton to do something of note on the football field. He's got six catches for 78 yards with one fumble lost as a pro. Patton is going to compete with Jerome Simpson and Bruce Ellington for the 49ers WR3 job. Unless Kaepernick takes huge strides as a passer, we can't see Patton having much fantasy value--even if he wins the WR3 spot.

49ers | Big role for Torrey Smith?    Sat May 23, 10:56 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith was a featured part of the offense during practice Thursday, May 21, connecting with QB Colin Kaepernick on several plays and catching a touchdown from QB Blaine Gabbert in the red zone.

Footballguys view: The 49ers made the move to add Smith so they could upgrade the receiver position. Smith has the speed to stretch the field, and he can still get on top of a defense in a hurry. We'll see if he can establish chemistry with Colin Kaepernick this offseason, training camp and preseason. Right now, fantasy owners look at Smith as a low-end WR3 (WR37, 8.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Vernon Davis ready to rebound?    Sat May 23, 10:45 PM

San Fancisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught a pair of red-zone touchdowns from QB Colin Kaepernick during practice Thursday, May 21, and he added a 25-yard reception on a deep crossing route.

Footballguys view: The pair of touchdowns matches what Davis was able to put up all of last year. In the final year of his contract, Davis needs to get things back on track after a disappointing 2014. Fantasy owners who selected Davis last year were certainly expecting more than 26 catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns. We'll see if Davis can get back to his TE1 status, but right now Davis is being drafted as a low-end TE2 (TE18, 13.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick looking good    Sat May 23, 10:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was accurate on his throws with his new throwing motion in practice Thursday, May 21. His passes still had their usual zip, and he was able to remain accurate while throwing on the run when plays broke down.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick needs to play better as a passer if he wants to continue developing as a pro quarterback. When pressured in 2014, Kaepernick only completed 43.4 percent of his passes. For the season, Kaepernick ranked 24th in the league with a completion percentage of 60.5 percent. Accuracy is a huge problem for him.

49ers | Dres Anderson recovering nicely    Sat May 23, 01:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Dres Anderson (knee) is not wearing a knee brace for his surgically repaired knee. Anderson was a full participant in organized team activities Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Anderson is an interesting player to watch in super deep dynasty leagues. He has a good second gear to create separation on downfield routes. Anderson plays bigger than his size because of his ability to high-point passes and play "above the rim" on jump passes. He originally hurt his knee last October, so it's a good sign that he's fully participating and working without a brace.

49ers | Kendall Hunter moving well    Thu May 21, 11:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) made several quick bursts during practice Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Hunter is on the roster bubble this year, and he needs to prove he can stay healthy if he wants to stay with the 49ers. He's a talented back, and we feel Hunter could be a nice change-of-pace back. However, the 49ers went out and added Reggie Bush this offseason to play that role behind starter Carlos Hyde. Hunter's best bet is to make the roster as a reserve player and wait for his opportunity.

49ers | Reggie Bush wants to return punts    Thu May 21, 07:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush has expressed his desire to the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff to return punts this season. 'I told the coaches I wanted to return punts again. And they were excited about it,' Bush said. 'We're still working at it, still chipping away. And we're looking forward to being and all-around great special teams.'

Footballguys view: Bush will be playing a part-time role behind starter Carlos Hyde, so there's no great concern about wearing him down. He's quick and dangerous in the open field, and Bush can provide the 49ers special teams with some punch as a return man. In return-yardage leagues this could bump his current ADP of RB43 (9.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman had scheduled day off    Thu May 21, 07:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman didn't practice Thursday, May 21, as he had a scheduled day off. Bowman is still working his way back from last season's knee injury.

Footballguys view: We'll see Bowman with more of these days off in the future. The team doesn't need to rush him back at the cost of re-aggravating his injury.

49ers | Carlos Hyde nursing injury    Thu May 21, 07:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (leg) is nursing a leg injury and did not practice Thursday, May 21. A timetable for his return was not disclosed.

Footballguys view: There's no word about what specifically this mysterious leg injury is. We'll know more if Hyde continues to miss time as offseason workouts continue. With Frank Gore moving on to the Colts, Hyde is set to be the bellcow back for the 49ers in 2015.

San Francisco 49ers DE Arik Armstead signed a four-year deal with the team Friday, May 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Armstead is considered to have as high, if not a higher ceiling than #6 overall pick Leonard Williams, but he also showed inconsistency in effort and effecitiveness at Oregon. He's more of a project than a typical first-round pick.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman looking great    Fri May 15, 07:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) has made a strong return to the practice field in early workouts after missing all of last year with a knee injury. Bowman has been able to take part in all workouts from the team's first offseason practice. 'Bowman's looking great,' head coach Jim Tomsula said. 'Bow looks great. I'd say we're more treating Bow like a vet than we're treating Bow like a post-injury guy right now.' Bowman and LB Michael Wilhoite are projected to be the starting inside linebackers.

Footballguys view: Bowman is one of the last holdovers from the defense that went to the Super Bowl, and the 49ers are going to need him to play like his old self to avoid the cellar in the NFC West. He's a boom/bust IDP LB right now in both redraft and dynasty, but lots of tackle opportunity should be there.

49ers | Torrey Smith should free up Vernon Davis    Thu May 14, 08:17 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith's arrival should free up TE Vernon Davis to stretch the field, according to general manager Trent Baalke. 'The one thing that really shows up is the way the field's opened up more with the speed or Torrey being able to stretch the outside,' Baalke said. 'And it really helps Vernon's game because now Vernon's game is (to) stretch the field a little bit, as well.'

Footballguys view: The team needs to get Davis back on track after a hugely disappointing 2014 season where he only caught 26 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Smith has the speed to stretch the field and open up routes underneath. We'll see if his presence can help spring Davis free.

49ers | Carlos Hyde expected to start    Thu May 14, 01:49 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is the expected starter heading into the regular season while RBs Reggie Bush, Kendall Hunter and rookie Mike Davis all compete for touches as well.

Footballguys view: This is what fantasy owners have been expecting. With Frank Gore (Colts) gone, Hyde gets to take over as the lead back. Bush should be the primary change-of-pace player behind him on the depth chart. We like the upside of rookie Mike Davis in dynasty leagues, but his impact may be minimal this year. Hyde has a current ADP of RB17 (3.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick helped by Reggie Bush    Wed May 13, 04:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush has been an asset to QB Colin Kaepernick this offseason, according to general manager Trent Baalke. Baalke said Bush and Kaepernick have developed a rapport and that Bush's downfield speed gives Kaepernick more room to work with.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need as many weapons around Kaepernick as they can possibly get. Bush will play as a change-of-pace back behind Carlos Hyde this season. Hyde is going off the board at RB17 (3.12) in 12-team PPR leagues while Bush's ADP is at RB43 (9.08).

49ers | DeAndre Smelter agrees to terms    Mon May 11, 10:27 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed WR DeAndre Smelter to a contract Monday, May 11. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Smelter was a fourth-round pick by the 49ers in the 2015 NFL draft. He's a big, physical wide receiver who plays with a high football intelligence. Smelter suffered an ACL injury late last year, and his playing status for 2015 is up in the air. He's a developmental prospect worth keeping an eye on in dynasty leagues.

49ers | Mike Davis signs on dotted line    Mon May 11, 10:25 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed RB Mike Davis to a contract Monday, May 11. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: We like Davis and his natural skill set for running the rock. He's got some power to his game, and Davis is tough to bring down with his low center of gravity. Davis fell to the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft as he was coming off a down season. In 2013, Davis looked much better. Conditioning and motivation seemed to be problems for him last season.

49ers | Blake Bell signs rookie deal    Mon May 11, 10:25 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed TE Blake Bell to a contract Monday, May 11. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: This wasn't a great class of tight ends, but we love Bell's upside. At 6'6" 260 pounds, Bell can fly down the field and create mismatches against linebackers or safeties. Bell only played tight end one season for the Sooners, and he's still somewhat raw at the position. If he can develop, Bell has high upside and potential.

49ers | SF interested in Lance Briggs    Mon May 11, 10:16 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are interested in free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears), a source said Monday, May 11. Any player signed after May 12 does not count against the NFL's formula for awarding compensatory picks.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are in need of linebacker help in any way possible. NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite should be the 49ers' starting inside linebackers this season. They didn't select a linebacker in the draft, but they did add Nick Bellore and Philip Wheeler in free agency.
