San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (ankle) rolled his ankle in football training, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh said he should be back soon.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a talented rookie trying to catch on as a reserve receiver with the team. The 49ers have a stacked depth chart at wide receiver. At this time, Ellington is about fifth on the depth chart.

49ers | Aldon Smith and Roger Goodell could meet soon    Thu Jul 24, 01:08 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith is expected to meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the near future, which likely would lead to a decision on any discipline for Smith.

Footballguys view: Smith is very likely to be suspended for multiple games. The 49ers defense should be without him and Navorro Bowman to start the season, which makes them a less attractive D/ST play and more attractive matchup - at least one to not automatically avoid until the defense is full strength.

49ers | Stevie Johnson cleared     Wed Jul 23, 04:57 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson (hamstring) passed his physical and has been cleared to practice Thursday, July 23.

Footballguys view: Johnson still has talent, but he's been banged up quite a bit during his pro career. Nothing is guaranteed for Johnson even though the 49ers traded for him earlier this year. He'll have to beat out guys like Brandon Lloyd for a roster spot. Johnson should be the team's WR3 behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.

49ers| Justin Smith feels fully healthy    Wed Jul 23, 04:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith (shoulder) said he is fully healthy entering training camp after offseason shoulder surgery.

49ers | Vernon Davis reports    Wed Jul 23, 12:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis has reported to camp Wednesday, July 23, according to an Instagram post from 49ers S C.J. Spillman.

Footballguys view: So much for him holding out. Davis is already the 4th-highest paid tight end in the NFL in terms of annual average salary ($7.35 million). The 49ers were unlikely to get him a new deal, so holding out was fruitless.

49ers | Stevie Johnson, Brandon Lloyd not locks to make roster    Tue Jul 22, 11:21 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Stevie Johnson is the frontrunner for the No. 3 WR job, according to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, but he added that neither Johnson nor WR Brandon Lloyd is a lock to make the roster. Maiocco believes that Johnson's salary and the fact that Lloyd doesn't contribute on special teams would make them expendable if a younger receiver proves capable of filling the No. 3 WR role.

Footballguys view: We imagine that Johnson will make the final roster. However, Lloyd may have to go back to making direct-to-dvd zombie movies.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore may practice soon    Tue Jul 22, 07:30 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) may be on the practice field sooner rather than later, according to a source. The team is being cautious with Lattimore, but he is reportedly fine.

Footballguys view: We need to see what Lattimore looks like in practice and the preseason before we get too excited about his chances to make an impact in 2014. Lattimore has incredible talent, but coming back from the knee injury (second one in college) suffered in 2012 may be difficult. He'll compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Frank Gore this year.

49ers | LaMichael James may be odd man out at RB    Mon Jul 21, 12:00 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James could have trouble making the roster this year, according to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. Williamson believes RB Frank Gore, RB Carlos Hyde, RB Marcus Lattimore, RB Kendall Hunter and FB Bruce Miller will make the roster.

Footballguys view: James could make the team based on his return ability. He's not going to get many carries if he makes the final roster, but James could catch a few passes as a change-of-pace back.

49ers | LaMichael James top candidate for return jobs    Sat Jul 19, 12:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James will be entering training camp as the leading candidate for the kick and punt return jobs. WR Bruce Ellington, WR Devon Wylie, WR Quinton Patton and CB Perrish Cox are expected to compete with James for the jobs.

Footballguys view: James has to do something to stand out in the league's most crowded backfield. He's buried on the depth chart behind Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and rookie Carlos Hyde (at least). James has little fantasy value--even in dynasty leagues.

  49ers | Bruce Ellington's injury not serious    Sat Jul 19, 11:06 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (undisclosed) suffered an undisclosed injury while working out on his own, but it is not believed to be serious. Ellington will start training camp on the Non-Football Injury list.

Footballguys view: Good news for the rookie here. He's an elite athlete with the speed and quickness to be dangerous after the catch. Ellington lacks the size to play outside, but if he becomes a better route-runner he could develop into a fine slot receiver.

49ers | Ian Williams expects to be ready for season    Sat Jul 19, 11:04 AM

49ers | Aldon Smith sentenced    Fri Jul 18, 05:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith was sentenced to 12 days in jail for vehicle charges Friday, July 18.

Footballguys view: Ward is a talented rookie with the ability to hit or cover. Heis expected to compete for the third safety job and the nickel cornerback role in his first season.

49ers | Joe Staley wants to finish career in SF    Thu Jul 17, 07:11 PM

49ers | Joe Staley extended    Thu Jul 17, 05:30 PM

San Francisco OT Joe Staley signed a two-year contract extension.

Footballguys view: Staley is one of the best players at his position, and he does a fine job as Colin Kaepernick's blind-side protector. He was scheduled to make only $2.4 million this year, so the 49ers decided to reward his outstanding play. Financial details were not disclosed at this time.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore to be placed on NFI    Thu Jul 17, 05:10 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) will start training camp on the non-football injury list as he continues to rehabilitate his knee.

Footballguys view: Lattimore is trying to recover from the devastating knee injury (second of his college career) he suffered at South Carolina. He can be activated to the camp roster at any time. We'll see if he can get back in shape enough to be activated for Week 1 of the regular season. Fantasy owners need to realize that he may never be the same player he used to be.

49ers | Jewel Hampton in tough spot    Wed Jul 16, 11:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Jewel Hampton is in a tough spot due to RB Frank Gore and four other running backs on the roster which the team invested draft picks, so it might be hard for him to crack the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Ugh. Hampton is a talented back, but he's on an incredibly cramped roster. If he doesn't make the 49ers final roster, then we'd like to see another team take a chance on him. Hampton runs with a fine blend of instincts, power and deceptive speed.

49ers | Alex Boone could fetch mid-round pick    Wed Jul 16, 11:32 PM

49ers | Bruce Ellington focused on football    Fri Jul 11, 04:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington recently said he's giving 100 percent every time he steps on the field, adding he's simply going to work hard and chase his dream.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a speed guy who knows how to get on top of the defense in a hurry. He's not a nuanced route-runner and he needs to work on his ability to make tough catches. Too often, Ellington will get outmuscled at the point of the catch. His lack of size makes him a slot receiver in the pros. He'll compete with Stevie Johnson and Quinton Patton for playing time this year.

  49ers | Frank Gore's carries to decrease a bit    Wed Jul 9, 12:04 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore should see around 220 carries this season, according to ESPN.com's Bill Williamson. Gore carried the ball 276 times last year.

Footballguys view: This takes Gore from mid-RB2 to low RB2/flex territory, but notice that it would only free up 50 or so carries for Carlos Hyde, Marcus Lattimore, and Kendall Hunter. Unless Gore gets hurt this year, he'll likely be the most valuable back in San Francisco's backfield.

49ers | Alex Boone could hold out    Tue Jul 8, 02:28 AM

San Francisco 49ers OT Alex Boone may hold out of training camp to focus attention on getting a new contract.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are a notoriously disciplined team when it comes to money, so Boone is unlikely to get any concessions for a holdout. He's a veteran, so a holdout shouldn't decrease his effectiveness too much.

49ers | Quinton Patton likely will make roster    Sat Jul 5, 11:52 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton likely will make the final roster, because he played well when he was healthy last season and the team likes his energy.

Footballguys view: Patton is an exciting second-year player because of his speed and deep pass-tracking ability. He'll compete with Stevie Johnson for the WR3 job behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.

49ers | Two expected to compete for No. 3 WR job    Sat Jul 5, 11:11 AM

San Francisco 49ers WRs Stevie Johnson and Brandon Lloyd likely will compete for the No. 3 wide receiver job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Lloyd was out of football last year, but he did manage to star in a direct-to-DVD zombie movie. We like Stevie Styles in this competition. He could work well as a third receiver behind Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin. Johnson could also start on the outside if somebody above him on the depth chart gets hurt. With so many young receivers on the roster (Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington) we may not see Lloyd make the final roster.

49ers | Chris Borland looking forward to competing    Fri Jul 4, 11:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Chris Borland said he understands that LB Michael Wilhoite is the leading candidate for the starting inside linebacker job that will replace LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) but is looking forward to competing with Wilhoite during training camp.

Footballguys view: Don't count the rookie out. Borland is a two-down thumper with a great nose for the ball. He scrapes and flows to the ball quickly, and he arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He's shown improved ability in coverage, and Borland could certainly be the starter (while Bowman is out) for the 49ers in Week 1.

49ers | Vernon Davis shouldn't be impacted by Jimmy Graham ruling    Wed Jul 2, 03:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis' holdout for a new contract should not be impacted by Jimmy Graham being ruled as a tight end, according to a source. Davis lined up as a tight end more than a wide receiver in 2013 and has freely admitted that he is a tight end. The 49ers don't appear inclined to give Davis a new deal. He is currently the third-highest paid tight end. San Francisco veterans report to training camp July 24.

Footballguys view: Graham was a special case because of where he lines up in the formation--a majority of the time as a wide receiver. Davis lines up more like a traditional tight end even though he's a freakishly athletic move tight end. This holdout has the makings to last a while. We'll have a better idea when we get close to training camp.
