49ers | LaMichael James unlikely to report    Mon Apr 21, 03:34 PM

49ers | NaVorro Bowman to start camp on PUP list    Mon Apr 21, 02:02 PM

The San Francisco 49ers plan to place LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) on the Physically Unable to Perform list when training camp begins, because he is not expected to be cleared to play before the start of the regular season. Bowman will be working with the trainers during offseason workouts.

49ers | LaMichael James not at workouts    Mon Apr 21, 02:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB LaMichael James is training in Texas by himself and did not report for the start of offseason workouts Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Miami and Philadelphia have been mentioned as possible trade partners. The 49ers would be lucky to recoup the sixth-round pick they spent to acquire Blaine Gabbert, as James has done little to nothing during his two years in the league.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore not expected to be restricted    Sun Apr 20, 08:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) is not expected to be restricted in any way when offseason workouts begin.

Footballguys view: We're not shocked by this news. Lattimore missed all of his rookie season in 2013 as he recovered from the second knee injury that prematurely ended his final season at South Carolina. He should look good early in camp, and he could certainly push for playing time in 2014.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not at scene of suspicious incident    Sat Apr 19, 10:41 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was not believed to be at the scene of a suspicious incident when Miami police arrived earlier this month.

Footballguys view: The legal process is still sorting things out. At this time, it looks like Kaepernick may avoid any sort of legal trouble.

49ers | Contract talks with Colin Kaepernick stop for now    Thu Apr 17, 11:42 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have stopped contract extension talks with QB Colin Kaepernick for now while the Miami police investigate an incident involving Kaepernick earlier this month.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The team could resume contract talks once the legal process has been exhausted.

49ers | Not thinking of cutting Aldon Smith    Thu Apr 17, 09:28 PM

The San Francisco 49ers do not plan on releasing LB Aldon Smith this offseason. Smith is expected to be suspended at the beginning of the season, but the length of the suspension is not known at this point.

Footballguys view: The Niners have a lot of thinking to do about their troubled linebacker and may want to keep Smith in house to give him support. He's incredibly talented but it's increasingly looking like he is just as troubled and abandoning him may be something they worry could make him worse.

49ers | Terrance West to visit Monday    Wed Apr 16, 11:27 PM

Towson RB Terrance West will visit the San Francisco 49ers' facilities Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: West is a big back who can run in the 4.5s. The 49ers already have a stacked group of backs, so adding West to the mix would be a curious move. Some think the small-school power back will be a top-100 pick.

49ers | Shopping LaMichael James    Wed Apr 16, 11:27 PM

According to a league source, the San Francisco 49ers have been shopping RB LaMichael James. He finds himself behind RBs Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter and perhaps Marcus Lattimore on the depth chart at running back this season.

Footballguys view: Good luck. The free-agency market for backs is terrible, so trading for a part-time back isn't going to harvest much in return. James could be a decent change-of-pace back, but he's buried on the depth chart in San Francisco. They have a great group of backs from top to bottom. We even like Jewel Hampton in super deep dynasty leagues.

49ers | Aldon Smith not expected back    Tue Apr 15, 11:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith hasn't only lost the benefit of the doubt with the team, but he probably won't play with the team in 2014, according to several sources involved with the team's decision making. However, the NFL is almost certain to punish him for his latest arrest, and the team will probably wait through the legal and NFL processes before making any final conclusion.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Smith is gifted, but his off-field problems have become too much of a distraction. Hopefully he can get his life back in order and get back to starring on the football field.

49ers | Brandon Lloyd signs    Tue Apr 15, 01:20 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) to an undisclosed deal Tuesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: Let's hope he doesn't duck when any incoming passes are headed in his direction. Lloyd played for the 49ers earlier in his career after being a fourth-round pick by the team in 2003. He bounced around the league after that, and he was out of football in 2013. Lloyd will compete as a reserve receiver, but is not guaranteed a roster spot.

49ers | Martavis Bryant visiting    Mon Apr 14, 10:25 AM

The San Francisco 49ers will visit with Clemson WR Martavis Bryant Monday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Bryant is the definition of a vertical threat. He's big (6'4") and knows how to use his frame to box out defenders. Bryant is a boom/bust prospect who needs to be more consistent to play up to his potential. He's likely to go off the board in the second round.

Smith reacted in a belligerent manner to a second security screening when he was in a security line. After making the bomb threat, he proceeded to the gate and airport police were summoned. San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith was reportedly detained by police at Los Angeles International Airport over the weekend. A man, believed to be Smith, was belligerent in the security line and said something about having a bomb.

Footballguys view: 49ers GM Trent Baalke released this statement: "We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment." We'll wait to see what facts come out before commenting about any potential impact on Smith or the team.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick denies allegations    Fri Apr 11, 11:50 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick said a TMZ reports that alleges sexual assault against him is 'completely wrong.' Kaepernick is being investigated for sexual assault involving two other NFL players and an unnamed woman on April 1, but no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed.

49ers | Details on Colin Kaepernick investigation    Thu Apr 10, 03:35 PM

Updating a previous report, an unnamed woman said she had an encounter with San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick, WR Quinton Patton and Seattle Seahawks WR Ricardo Lockette April 1 at a Miami hotel. The woman told police she drank and smoked marijuana with the players and wound up in Kaepernick's room. She told police that she and Kaepernick both removed their closes but didn't have sex. Kaepernick later left the room and the woman said she couldn't remember anything after that. Kaepernick is being investigated for alleged sexual assault, but the investigation is in the 'beginning stages.'

Footballguys view: The marijuana part is something that shouldn't be overlooked as it can land any of the players in the NFL's drug program if they aren't in it already. There's nothing about this that is good. Even if there was no rape, even if there is a logical explanation, this was an enormously dumb position for all three - but especially Kaepernick - to put themselves in.

49ers | Quinton Patton being investigated    Thu Apr 10, 01:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton is part of an investigation by the Miami police involving an alleged sexual assault.

Footballguys view: Along with quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Patton was present at an apartment where the incident spurring this investigation took place. We have little real information, so nobody wants to jump to conclusions, but reports of marijuana use could get the league involved regardless of the outcome of the investigation.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick being investigated    Thu Apr 10, 12:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is being investigated for an alleged sexual assault. Police are investigating an alleged incident that took place in Florida. Kaepernick has not yet been charged.

Footballguys view: There is a lot to piece together here, so let's not go leaping to conclusions as to what happened. Aside from alcohol, marijuana was allegedly being consumed during this incident, which will raise the ears of the league. Again, there is a long way to go before we have the facts, but as SI.com's Doug Farrar tweeted out earlier, whatever the outcome, this can't be what Harbaugh wants his quarterback and a receiver involved in during the off-season.

49ers | Storm Johnson to visit    Thu Apr 10, 12:25 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will visit with Central Florida RB Storm Johnson Monday, April 14.

Footballguys view: The Niners have five backs on their roster, even after letting Anthony Dixon leave, but they're always on the lookout for talent. Johnson is an underrated back in this class, projected to go in the fifth round by many analysts. He isn't a full-load kind of back, but in today's NFL that's not a big deal. His acceleration and power make him a solid part of an RBBC.

49ers | Talking to Brandon Lloyd    Thu Apr 10, 10:46 AM

The San Francisco 49ers are talking to free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots).

Footballguys view: More than likely the team is just looking at depth options, as Lloyd didn't play at all last year. Instead, Lloyd appeared in a zombie "movie" called After Effect. Which makes us wonder - do the Niners have a concern about a coming zombie apocalypse? Are they just having Lloyd in to pick his brain so they can prepare? It makes as much sense as actually expecting anything from him this year if they do sign him.

49ers | Chris Culliver charged    Wed Apr 9, 09:10 PM

San Francisco 49ers CB Chris Culliver was charged Wednesday, April 9, with one felony and two misdemeanors stemming from an alleged hit-and-run accident in March, the Santa Clara District Attorney's office said. He is scheduled to be arraigned on those charges Friday, April 11. It will more than likely be continued to a later date to allow Culliver time to enter a plea. If convicted, he could face up to three years in prison.

49ers | Could have interest in Brandon Thomas    Mon Apr 7, 05:08 PM

The San Francisco 49ers could show interest in Clemson OG Brandon Thomas (knee) during the 2014 NFL Draft even though he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament last week. The team drafted DE Cornellius Carradine and RB Marcus Lattimore last season even though they missed the 2013 season because of knee injuries.

Footballguys view: The 49ers also selected RB Ricky Watters in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft and he missed his rookie season due to a broken leg suffered at Notre Dame. Thomas will certainly be on many team's radar, even after this injury.

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) said doctors believe he is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a serious knee injury but is still not expected to return until the middle of the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: The Niners would love to have Bowman back earlier but they won't rush it. Bowman tore up his knee in the NFC Championship game after a tremendous 2013 season.

49ers | Interested in DeSean Jackson    Tue Apr 1, 12:37 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have expressed interest in free-agent WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles).

49ers | Champ Bailey could be option    Mon Mar 31, 02:40 PM

The San Francisco 49ers could show interest in free-agent CB Champ Bailey (Broncos) because of the off-field troubles for CB Chris Culliver.

49ers | Looking for third wide receiver    Wed Mar 26, 05:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team is looking for another wide receiver and will likely run more three-receiver sets. "Yeah. No. 3 receiver, a third guy that can get open, make plays, another option for the quarterback to go to," Harbaugh said. "A chance to attack areas of the field. A playmaker. That's what we're looking for."

Footballguys view: Quinton Patton displayed good chemistry with Colin Kaepernick late in the preseason, but injuries kept him from getting any consistent playing time, and it appears that he hasn't won over the 49ers coaches. He should get a chance to redeem himself this offseason, but if they go wide receiver early in the draft, it could signal that they have already moved on from planning a future with Patton in their passing game.

49ers | Jim Harbaugh believes in Frank Gore    Wed Mar 26, 01:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh believes RB Frank Gore has at least three good years left in him. "I really think Frank has three more good years," Harbaugh said. "I truly believe that. But we're in a game of taking it one year at a time." Gore will make $6.45 million in the final year of his current contract after rushing for 1,128 yards and nine touchdowns last year.

Footballguys view: Gore will fall in drafts as most assume a drop-off at age 31, but if the 49ers are willing to pay him 6.45 million in this running back market, then perhaps he is capable of reproducing his solid RB2 2013 campaign. Marcus Lattimore could threaten Gore's workload, and he was a non-factor last year, so that is something to watch to determine when it will be worth it to pull the trigger on Gore in drafts.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick contract talks enter next stage    Tue Mar 25, 01:55 PM

"We're going to work extremely hard, very diligently in trying to get something done prior to training camp," Baalke said. "That's the objective right now, as it stands."

Footballguys view: Kaepernick was selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft, so he's been incredibly underpaid as the 49ers starter. He's reportedly seeking a deal that pays around $20 million annually. The team will continue to work hard in order to get him a new contract.
