49ers | Big role for Torrey Smith?    Sat May 23, 10:56 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith was a featured part of the offense during practice Thursday, May 21, connecting with QB Colin Kaepernick on several plays and catching a touchdown from QB Blaine Gabbert in the red zone.

49ers | Vernon Davis ready to rebound?    Sat May 23, 10:45 PM

San Fancisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis caught a pair of red-zone touchdowns from QB Colin Kaepernick during practice Thursday, May 21, and he added a 25-yard reception on a deep crossing route.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick looking good    Sat May 23, 10:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was accurate on his throws with his new throwing motion in practice Thursday, May 21. His passes still had their usual zip, and he was able to remain accurate while throwing on the run when plays broke down.

49ers | Dres Anderson recovering nicely    Sat May 23, 01:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Dres Anderson (knee) is not wearing a knee brace for his surgically repaired knee. Anderson was a full participant in organized team activities Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Anderson is an interesting player to watch in super deep dynasty leagues. He has a good second gear to create separation on downfield routes. Anderson plays bigger than his size because of his ability to high-point passes and play "above the rim" on jump passes. He originally hurt his knee last October, so it's a good sign that he's fully participating and working without a brace.

49ers | Kendall Hunter moving well    Thu May 21, 11:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) made several quick bursts during practice Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Hunter is on the roster bubble this year, and he needs to prove he can stay healthy if he wants to stay with the 49ers. He's a talented back, and we feel Hunter could be a nice change-of-pace back. However, the 49ers went out and added Reggie Bush this offseason to play that role behind starter Carlos Hyde. Hunter's best bet is to make the roster as a reserve player and wait for his opportunity.

49ers | Reggie Bush wants to return punts    Thu May 21, 07:29 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush has expressed his desire to the San Francisco 49ers coaching staff to return punts this season. 'I told the coaches I wanted to return punts again. And they were excited about it,' Bush said. 'We're still working at it, still chipping away. And we're looking forward to being and all-around great special teams.'

Footballguys view: Bush will be playing a part-time role behind starter Carlos Hyde, so there's no great concern about wearing him down. He's quick and dangerous in the open field, and Bush can provide the 49ers special teams with some punch as a return man. In return-yardage leagues this could bump his current ADP of RB43 (9.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman had scheduled day off    Thu May 21, 07:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman didn't practice Thursday, May 21, as he had a scheduled day off. Bowman is still working his way back from last season's knee injury.

Footballguys view: We'll see Bowman with more of these days off in the future. The team doesn't need to rush him back at the cost of re-aggravating his injury.

49ers | Carlos Hyde nursing injury    Thu May 21, 07:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (leg) is nursing a leg injury and did not practice Thursday, May 21. A timetable for his return was not disclosed.

Footballguys view: There's no word about what specifically this mysterious leg injury is. We'll know more if Hyde continues to miss time as offseason workouts continue. With Frank Gore moving on to the Colts, Hyde is set to be the bellcow back for the 49ers in 2015.

49ers | Arik Armstead signs deal    Fri May 15, 07:52 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Arik Armstead signed a four-year deal with the team Friday, May 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Armstead is considered to have as high, if not a higher ceiling than #6 overall pick Leonard Williams, but he also showed inconsistency in effort and effecitiveness at Oregon. He's more of a project than a typical first-round pick.

49ers | No plans to sign Lance Briggs    Fri May 15, 07:19 PM

Free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears) has drawn interest from the San Francisco 49ers this offseason, but the 49ers have no immediate plans to sign the veteran with LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) looking great in his recovery from a serious knee injury.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman looking great    Fri May 15, 07:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) has made a strong return to the practice field in early workouts after missing all of last year with a knee injury. Bowman has been able to take part in all workouts from the team's first offseason practice. 'Bowman's looking great,' head coach Jim Tomsula said. 'Bow looks great. I'd say we're more treating Bow like a vet than we're treating Bow like a post-injury guy right now.' Bowman and LB Michael Wilhoite are projected to be the starting inside linebackers.

Footballguys view: Bowman is one of the last holdovers from the defense that went to the Super Bowl, and the 49ers are going to need him to play like his old self to avoid the cellar in the NFC West. He's a boom/bust IDP LB right now in both redraft and dynasty, but lots of tackle opportunity should be there.

49ers | Torrey Smith should free up Vernon Davis    Thu May 14, 08:17 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith's arrival should free up TE Vernon Davis to stretch the field, according to general manager Trent Baalke. 'The one thing that really shows up is the way the field's opened up more with the speed or Torrey being able to stretch the outside,' Baalke said. 'And it really helps Vernon's game because now Vernon's game is (to) stretch the field a little bit, as well.'

Footballguys view: The team needs to get Davis back on track after a hugely disappointing 2014 season where he only caught 26 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns. Smith has the speed to stretch the field and open up routes underneath. We'll see if his presence can help spring Davis free.

49ers | Carlos Hyde expected to start    Thu May 14, 01:49 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde is the expected starter heading into the regular season while RBs Reggie Bush, Kendall Hunter and rookie Mike Davis all compete for touches as well.

Footballguys view: This is what fantasy owners have been expecting. With Frank Gore (Colts) gone, Hyde gets to take over as the lead back. Bush should be the primary change-of-pace player behind him on the depth chart. We like the upside of rookie Mike Davis in dynasty leagues, but his impact may be minimal this year. Hyde has a current ADP of RB17 (3.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick helped by Reggie Bush    Wed May 13, 04:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush has been an asset to QB Colin Kaepernick this offseason, according to general manager Trent Baalke. Baalke said Bush and Kaepernick have developed a rapport and that Bush's downfield speed gives Kaepernick more room to work with.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need as many weapons around Kaepernick as they can possibly get. Bush will play as a change-of-pace back behind Carlos Hyde this season. Hyde is going off the board at RB17 (3.12) in 12-team PPR leagues while Bush's ADP is at RB43 (9.08).

49ers | DeAndre Smelter agrees to terms    Mon May 11, 10:27 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed WR DeAndre Smelter to a contract Monday, May 11. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Smelter was a fourth-round pick by the 49ers in the 2015 NFL draft. He's a big, physical wide receiver who plays with a high football intelligence. Smelter suffered an ACL injury late last year, and his playing status for 2015 is up in the air. He's a developmental prospect worth keeping an eye on in dynasty leagues.

49ers | Mike Davis signs on dotted line    Mon May 11, 10:25 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed RB Mike Davis to a contract Monday, May 11. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: We like Davis and his natural skill set for running the rock. He's got some power to his game, and Davis is tough to bring down with his low center of gravity. Davis fell to the fourth round of the 2015 NFL draft as he was coming off a down season. In 2013, Davis looked much better. Conditioning and motivation seemed to be problems for him last season.

49ers | Blake Bell signs rookie deal    Mon May 11, 10:25 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed TE Blake Bell to a contract Monday, May 11. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: This wasn't a great class of tight ends, but we love Bell's upside. At 6'6" 260 pounds, Bell can fly down the field and create mismatches against linebackers or safeties. Bell only played tight end one season for the Sooners, and he's still somewhat raw at the position. If he can develop, Bell has high upside and potential.

49ers | SF interested in Lance Briggs    Mon May 11, 10:16 PM

The San Francisco 49ers are interested in free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears), a source said Monday, May 11. Any player signed after May 12 does not count against the NFL's formula for awarding compensatory picks.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are in need of linebacker help in any way possible. NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite should be the 49ers' starting inside linebackers this season. They didn't select a linebacker in the draft, but they did add Nick Bellore and Philip Wheeler in free agency.

49ers | Mike Davis selected    Sat May 2, 01:19 PM

South Carolina RB Mike Davis was selected by the San Francisco 49ers with the 126th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: With Carlos Hyde, Reggie Bush and Kendall Hunter around already, this was a luxury pick but a nice one. Davis does a lot of things well, but didn't look as good in 2014 as he did in 2013. There isn't much room for him in San Francisco though, so even long term his fantasy value is negligible.

  49ers | Arik Armstead selected 17th overall    Thu Apr 30, 10:00 PM

Oregon DE Arik Armstead was selected 17th overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: The Niners have lost a lot of guys defensively this offseason, so Armstead makes all the sense in the world. A former basketball player, Armstead is a little raw, but once he gets his feet wet, he should be a solid pass rushing force.

49ers | Three players let go    Thu Apr 30, 03:22 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Trindon Holliday was released Thursday, April 30, while OG Fou Fonoti and WR Lance Lewis were waived.

Footballguys view: Just clearing space for rookies and undrafted free agents. Holliday made a few splashes, but overall isn't worth them hanging onto him.

49ers | Philip Wheeler signed    Thu Apr 30, 03:15 PM

Free-agent LB Philip Wheeler (Dolphins) signed with the San Francisco 49ers Thursday, April 30. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Just a depth addition for a front seven which took a few hits this off season.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman back at practice    Wed Apr 29, 04:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) participated in voluntary minicamp Tuesday, April 28. It was Bowman's first practice since suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament in the 2014 NFC Championship against the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Bowman's injury has been one that forces us to ask if he'll ever be the same. The retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland have been devastating for a 49ers LB corps that needs a healthy Bowman.

49ers | Carlos Hyde in shape    Mon Apr 20, 04:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde has reportedly dropped his weight near 220 pounds. It's the lightest he's been since his days at Ohio State University.

Footballguys view: With Frank Gore playing for the Colts this year, Hyde is going to be the lead back for the 49ers. He could be the centerpiece of their offense as QB Colin Kaepernick continues to develop as a passer. Fantasy owners should consider Hyde a low-end RB2 with upside. We'll see free agent addition Reggie Bush chip in as a runner and receiver out of the backfield in 2015.

  49ers | Dorial Green-Beckham meets with SF    Fri Apr 17, 04:29 PM

Oklahoma WR Dorial Green-Beckham recently met with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need help at wide receiver, and Green-Beckham is a top-10 talent who could be available later in the draft because of off-field concerns. Green-Beckham is big, fast and physical at the point of the catch. Think of him in the same way you do Josh Gordon (Browns) both on and off the field.

49ers | Devin Funchess to visit    Wed Apr 15, 07:18 AM

Michigan WR Devin Funchess will visit the San Francisco 49ers in the coming days.

Footballguys view: Funchess could be a wide receiver or tight end in the pros. He's a big target who can catch passes at the highest point, and Funchess can use his frame to box out smaller defenders. Catching the ball is sometimes a problem as Funchess has had 20 drops over the last three seasons. With his raw skill set, we could see Funchess come off the board in the third round of the draft.

49ers | Carlos Hyde to receive more time    Mon Apr 13, 06:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde likely will see a lot more playing time next season, according to QB Colin Kaepernick.

Footballguys view: Hyde is going to be the lead back with Frank Gore moving on to the Colts this offseason. Behind him, we'll see Reggie Bush as the primary backup. The 49ers are going to need Hyde to prove that he can grind down the defense and keep opponents honest to help open things up for their struggling passing game.

49ers | Kendall Hunter taking part in workouts    Sun Apr 12, 10:01 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Kendall Hunter (knee) has been participating in some drills with his teammates during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: If healthy (a problem for Hunter during his pro career), Hunter will compete for the team's primary backup behind Carlos Hyde with veteran Reggie Bush. Hunter can be a good change-of-pace running back because of his speed and quickness, but staying durable has certainly been problematic. Don't be shocked to see the 49ers add another back via the 2015 NFL draft because of need and because this is a really strong group of backs.

49ers | Jalen Collins to visit    Sat Apr 11, 10:07 AM

Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers next week.

Footballguys view: Collins has the upside to be a shutdown corner in the NFL. He's got ideal height, weight, speed but his technique needs work after only 10 games started during his collegiate career.

49ers | Vernon Davis at workouts    Sat Apr 11, 07:28 AM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vernon Davis is attending voluntary workouts this season after skipping them the year before, saying 'I'm here this year because I want to get better.'

Footballguys view: Davis needs to get better after an atrocious 2014 season that saw him gather in only 26 catches for 245 yards and two touchdowns. He's in the final year of his contract and has a $6.9 million cap number in 2015.

49ers | Will meet with Devin Smith    Sat Apr 11, 07:22 AM

Ohio State WR Devin X. Smith has a visit lined up next week with the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Smith was held back in his college career by Braxton Miller's inability to throw the rock. However, when Cardale Jones took over as the starter last season we saw Smith break out. He's a burner who can take the top off the defense in the blink of an eye. He should be a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman expected to ready for workouts    Fri Apr 10, 04:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is expected to be on the field for offseason workouts, according to head coach Jim Tomsula.

Footballguys view: Bowman is one of the last key names left from the 49ers three-year run to the NFC title game and the Super Bowl form 2011-2013. If he can't come back full speed, the 49ers defense will be down to two players in common with the Super Bowl starting lineup in 2012, with Justin Smith pondering retirement and possibly reducing that number even further.

49ers | Anquan Boldin has advice for QB    Thu Apr 9, 10:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Anquan Boldin said QB Colin Kaepernick just needs to play his way. 'I think sometimes when you try to go off the suggestions of other people and try to please other people, you forget who you are and what got you there,' Boldin said Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Boldin has been a reliable target for Kaepernick, so he probably "gets" his QB. The new offensive coordinator Geep Chryst has been Kaepernick's QB coach for four years, so one would hope he understands this and gives Kaepernick room to roam in the right ways in the offense. Kaepernick should run more this year, which could enhance the boom in his boom/bust weekly scoring.

49ers | Sammie Coates to visit    Wed Apr 8, 12:14 PM

Auburn WR Sammie Coates is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers next week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Coates is amazingly gifted athletically, but he does have a problem with dropping passes and concentration on longer targets. His drop rate in college at Auburn was a whopping 19.1 percent. He'll be a project in the NFL, but one teams may feel is worth selecting in the second round of the draft. The 49ers have re-worked their wide receiving corps this offseason, and now Torrey Smith will lead the way at the position. Coates is more of a developmental guy who could sit behind Smith and Anquan Boldin as a rookie.

  49ers | Tony Jerod-Eddie retained    Tue Apr 7, 06:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Tony Jerod-Eddie signed his exclusive-rights tender Tuesday, April 7. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The team originally tendered him a month ago, and Jerod-Eddie is now signed through the 2015 season. Over his pro career, Jerod-Eddie has started four games (including two last year). He'll have the opportunity for a larger role on the 49ers defense this year with so much turnover and question marks on the defensive side of the ball.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick continues lessons    Mon Apr 6, 10:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick continues to work with former NFL MVP Kurt Warner this offseason, and Warner's goal is trying to get Kaepernick to wait longer in the pocket as a passer before using his athleticism as a crutch.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Kaepernick can kickstart his development as a pro passer. He has yet to revolutionize the position as some predicted, and in fact you could easily make the argument that his play took a step (or two) back in 2014. Warner said in a satellite radio interview Monday, April 6, that Kaepernick has relied on his running ability so long that it's a difficult transition to become the type of pocket passer necessary for success in the NFL.

49ers | Nick Bellore signed    Fri Apr 3, 03:54 PM

Free-agent LB Nick Bellore (Jets) signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers Friday, April 3. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need all the help they can get at the linebacker position. Bellore is a standout player on special teams, and that's the role he'll have in San Francisco.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman to return this season    Wed Apr 1, 03:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) will return in 2015 after missing all of the 2014 season with a knee injury. Head coach Jim Tomsula said Bowman is progressing well during the rehabilitation process.

Footballguys view: Good news for the 49ers here. Bowman will be able to participate in rehabilitation at a team facility with San Francisco staff members.

  49ers | Colin Kaepernick's salary guaranteed     Wed Apr 1, 02:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick's $10.4 million base salary for the 2015 season has become fully guaranteed since he was on the roster Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: The 49ers set up Kaepernick's contract in an unusual way. He's essentially playing on one-year deals for the foreseeable future. Kaepernick is not quite in make-it-or-break-it territory, but if he doesn't improve his play he soon will be.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick learning    Wed Apr 1, 01:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has been working with former NFL QB Kurt Warner this offseason to become a better all-around quarterback. 'For (Kaepernick), it's finding that balance between 'When do I be a quarterback?' and 'When do I be an athlete?' And trying to find that mix between the two,' Warner said. '... So the real question is going to be, when the bullets are flying and guys are chasing after him does he revert back to being an athlete or have we made some progress in making him more of a quarterback and staying in a quarterback-friendly position to be able to make more consistent, accurate throws down the field.'

Footballguys view: Kaepernick has not revolutionized the position like some thought he would by this time. Instead, he still makes one read and takes off to run. Kaepernick needs to show better as a passer from the pocket, and working through his progressions faster would help that.

  49ers | Desmond Bishop re-signs    Tue Mar 31, 05:19 PM

Free-agent LB Desmond Bishop (49ers) re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, March 31. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bishop could have a chance for some playing time on special teams. He played in only two games last year for the 49ers, recording two tackles. The veteran linebacker gives the 49ers depth at a position they're short-handed in.

49ers | Hakeem Nicks visiting San Fran    Mon Mar 30, 09:14 AM

Free-agent WR Hakeem Nicks (Colts) is visiting the San Francisco 49ers Monday, March 30.

Footballguys view: Nicks hasn't gotten much interest on the open market. The veteran receiver isn't what he used to be, and he's looking for a bounce-back season after a disappointing year with the Colts in 2014.

Free-agent LB Desmond Bishop (49ers) is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, March 30, according to a source.

49ers | SF has no talks with Brandon Lloyd    Sun Mar 29, 07:07 AM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (49ers) has had no conversations with his former team about a new contract.

Footballguys view: Lloyd should be out there if the 49ers get desperate at the position. This is a great WR draft class, and we think the 49ers would be best served to look at one during the draft rather than bring back the veteran Lloyd.

49ers | Jonathan Martin waived    Thu Mar 26, 04:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers OT Jonathan Martin was waived Thursday, March 26.

Footballguys view: Martin was likely someone who Jim Harbaugh brought in thinking he could do something with his former Stanford player. Martin appeared in 15 games with 9 starts for the 49ers last season. He's a decent player, but hasn't shown the talent most saw in college. He struggled in San Francisco and it could be tough to land yet another chance.

49ers | Jim Tomsula high on Reggie Bush     Thu Mar 26, 01:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush still has the ability to be an every-down back, according to head coach Jim Tomsula. Tomsula said Bush is not a gadget player but does have the skill set to help on third downs.

Footballguys view: Bush found himself the outside man looking in back in Detroit, but with the departure of Frank Gore, the Niners need help in the backfield. We're dubious of the idea he can still be an every down back, but he would be a big help in the backfield on passing downs at least.
