49ers | Bruce Ellington lands on the IR    Tue Aug 30, 04:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (hamstring) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Aug. 30. He is out for the season.

Footballguys view: There goes an interesting dynasty prospect, down for the year. Ellington could work well as a slot receiver in Chip Kelly's system, but now we'll have to wait and see if he can make a comeback next year. It looks like Jeremy Kerley could be the team's slot WR in 2016.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to play in finale    Tue Aug 30, 01:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will play in the preseason finale, and QB Blaine Gabbert will sit out, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick has an opportunity to showcase what talent he has at this point in his career. He's fallen behind Gabbert in the competition at QB, mainly because Kaepernick spent most of the offseason recovering from three different surgeries. We'll see if he can be a difference maker in this game.

49ers | OC expects Colin Kaepernick to make team    Mon Aug 29, 08:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins said he expects QB Colin Kaepernick to be on the roster when the regular season starts but that it is not his decision.

Footballguys view: Lord only knows what's going to happen with Kaepernick. He could make the team, and he could actually end up starting for the 49ers at some point this year. Blaine Gabbert should begin the season as the starter, but we don't have confidence that he'll retain that job.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick on chopping block?    Sun Aug 28, 11:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick faces a 'very big uphill battle' to make the 53-man roster, according to Jay Glazer of FOXSports.com.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick may not make the team for football reasons according to most reports. He's struggled to quickly recover after undergoing three offseason surgeries, and the 49ers could move forward with Blaine Gabbert as their starter.

49ers | San Francisco adds Jeremy Kerley    Sun Aug 28, 02:26 PM

Detroit Lions WR Jeremy Kerley was acquired by the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Aug. 28, in exchange for OG Brandon Thomas, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Kerley was not needed after the Lions signed Anquan Boldin. It's possible Andre Roberts could make the team over him too. Thomas was a top prospect before an ACL tear, so he could help the Lions offensive line depth.

49ers | QB competition still open in San Francisco    Sat Aug 27, 07:48 PM

San Francisco QB Blaine Gabbert and QB Colin Kaepernick are still competing for the starting job, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: It may be open, but Gabbert is in the lead. Kaepernick had three offseason surgeries, and he's spent a majority of the time this year recovering from those procedures. Gabbert isn't great, but he's better than a banged up Kaepernick.

San Francisco 49ers OT Anthony Davis was the starting right guard during the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick has quiet performance    Sat Aug 27, 08:38 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick went 2-for-6 for 14 yards in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26. He also rushed for 18 yards on four carries. Kaepernick said he believes he still has a chance to win the starting quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick didn't do himself any favors in the competition for starting QB. Blaine Gabbert is still entrenched as the early-season starter (in our opinion), and Kaepernick is still trying to get his game back on track.

49ers | Quinton Dial leaves with injury    Sat Aug 27, 08:32 AM

49ers | Shaun Draughn misses another game    Sat Aug 27, 08:26 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Shaun Draughn (ribs) was not able to play in the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, because of injured ribs.

Footballguys view: Draughn is still considered the primary backup to Carlos Hyde at this time according to head coach Chip Kelly. With Hyde (concussion) banged up, we could see more opportunity for guys like Draughn or Mike Davis.

49ers | Carlos Hyde suffers concussion    Sat Aug 27, 08:19 AM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (concussion) suffered a concussion during the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Hyde is going to be in the concussion protocol until he's cleared by the team. Watch his ADP with drafts going on around the country. Right now, Hyde is still going off the board at RB16 (4.06) in 12-team PPR leagues. That may drop a bit depending on how long this concussion lingers.

49ers | Bruce Ellington injures hamstring    Sat Aug 27, 12:40 AM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (hamstring) limped to the locker room against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, with a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Ellington has a chance to catch a ton of balls for a losing 49ers team that will run a lot of plays and rely on high percentage passing, but he needs to stay on the field. Shaun Draughn could be a big factor as a receiver out of the backfield if Ellington continues to stay on the injury report during the season.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert likely will start Friday    Fri Aug 26, 07:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert likely will be the starting quarterback for the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Colin Kaepernick was in play to get the start, but Gabbert remains in the presumptive lead to start Week 1 because Kaepernick has had so little time getting acclimated to Chip Kelly's system. The outcome of this battle will affect the value of every player in the 49ers offense, with Gabbert helping the short passing game and Kaepernick helping the running game.

49ers | San Francisco may have rotation at ILB    Fri Aug 26, 07:30 PM

49ers | Colin Kaepernick may start Friday    Fri Aug 26, 04:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) could start the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, since QB Blaine Gabbert started the first two preseason games.

Footballguys view: The 49ers appear reluctant to anoint Gabbert the starter, so if Kaepernick is functional, he could win this job. It would be better for the 49ers running game, but Kaepernick took all the wind out of the sails of the passing game last year.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick set to debut Friday    Wed Aug 24, 01:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is 'on track' to play against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: Well alright, it's time to see if Kaepernick can put himself back in the QB competition with Blaine Gabbert. If healthy, it seems like Kaepernick would be a good fit for the 49ers offense under Kelly. However, three offseason surgeries have held him back to this point. We'll see what Kaepernick can do in his 2016 preseason debut.

49ers | Bruce Ellington resumes practicing    Mon Aug 22, 09:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (ankle) returned to practice Monday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Ellington should be the team's slot receiver this year if healthy. There may be a bit of value in the 49ers passing (hello Vance McDonald!) due to the heavy amount of plays they'll run. Ellington is interesting because of his elusiveness and run-after-the-catch ability, but that may not lead to fantasy production in 2016.

49ers | SF receiver corps banged up    Mon Aug 22, 09:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers WRs Eric Rogers (knee), DeAndre Smelter (hamstring) and Bryce Treggs (knee) were not at practice Monday, Aug. 22, as the team is a bit banged up at receiver and might need to sign a receiver for the remainder of the preseason.

49ers | Shaun Draughn nursing injury    Mon Aug 22, 09:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Shaun Draughn (ribs) wore a blue jersey Monday, Aug. 22, at practice signifying for him not to be hit during practice. He took a blow to the ribs in last week's practice and was sidelined for the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20.

Footballguys view: Draughn was banged up in joint practices with the Broncos last week. However, head coach Chip Kelly declared that Draughn was the no.2 RB behind starter Carlos Hyde.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick back at practice    Mon Aug 22, 03:42 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in a full warmup practice Monday, Aug. 22. It was his first such participation since Aug. 10.

Footballguys view: The team has been watching Kaepernick throw on an incredibly limited basis while he's been out. It's the recovery process that needs work for Kaepernick. He'll be able to throw, but his soreness over the next few days will determine whether or not he can continue throwing. Blaine Gabbert is the clear-cut starter while Kaepernick is banged up.

49ers | Shaun Draughn is the backup     Mon Aug 22, 02:11 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Shaun Draughn is the No. 2 running back, according to head coach Chip Kelly. RBs DuJuan Harris and Mike Davis are competing for the No. 3 position.

Footballguys view: Draughn was injured (ribs) during the joint practices with the Broncos last week and missed the team's second preseason game. He'll be the backup to Carlos Hyde, but Draughn may see a large enough role as a receiver to warrant taking him as a last-round flier in deeper PPR leagues.

49ers | Vance McDonald emerging as weapon    Mon Aug 22, 12:01 AM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald has caught five passes for 92 yards from QB Blaine Gabbert through two preseason games.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners looking to wait on TE. The Chip Kelly offense regularly features the TE as the first read after the belly option with the RB. A QB like Blaine Gabbert should use McDonald early and often as a security blanket when looking to move the chains through the air. Catching 75 passes and finishing as a top-10 fantasy TE is not out of the question for McDonald.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) displayed improved velocity on his passes during pregame warmups Saturday, Aug. 20, and remains on target to resume practicing this week, according to head coach Chip Kelly. The team remains hopeful that he will play in the next preseason game versus the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

49ers | Bruce Ellington dealing with sore ankle    Fri Aug 19, 09:26 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Bruce Ellington (ankle) hasn't practiced much this week and is questionable to play against the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 20.

Footballguys view: Ellington has had a great summer and Blaine Gabbert is looking to him a lot in practices. He's worth a late pick in PPR leagues on the chance that he racks up receptions in garbage time on a losing team.

49ers | Young Niners receivers dormant    Fri Aug 19, 11:06 AM

49ers | Colin Kaepernick has arm fatigure    Thu Aug 18, 04:33 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is dealing with arm fatigue - what had previously been referred to as a dead arm. Kaepernick has participated in some drills, but has not thrown. He will not play Saturday, Aug. 20, against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: You have to wonder if something else is going on here, whether it be that he pushed too hard to come back from injury, had a misdiagnosed one or if the team just isn't pushing him onto the field because they don't have any intention of playing him. There's $19.2 million remaining in dead money on his contract per Spotrac, so cutting him might not be in the cards.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to practice next week    Thu Aug 18, 11:25 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) will practice next week, according to head coach Chip Kelly. Kaepernick is on target to play in the third preseason game.

Footballguys view: The 49ers quarterback situation is a dumpster fire containing a tire fire and another dumpster fire, all with napalm poured on top. Blaine Gabbert, Colin Kaepernick, Jeff Driskell, Christian Ponder, that annoying dude from the College Football Dr Pepper commercials - it doesn't matter. You shouldn't go near this mess without a hazmat suit.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick limited    Wed Aug 17, 03:59 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) participated in the handoff drills during practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, but did not participate in any of the throwing drills. Kaepernick did do some throwing on a side field.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are having joint practices with the Broncos on Wednesday and Thursday. The offense looked horrible against the Broncos defense on Wednesday, and QB Blaine Gabbert threw two interceptions returned for TDs. If healthy, Kaepernick could win this starting job. Gabbert may begin the season as the starter, but he doesn't have a firm grip on that job.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick fully dressed    Wed Aug 17, 12:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (shoulder) is fully dressed for practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, but has yet to throw in the early portion of practice.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is dealing with a "dead arm" after missing the entire offseason. He could still push Blaine Gabbert for the starting job if Gabbert can't improve from his first preseason performance.

49ers | Thaddeus Lewis placed on IR    Tue Aug 16, 05:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Thaddeus Lewis (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: With Lewis out for the year, the 49ers went out and signed free agent Christian Ponder. He'll compete with rookie Jeff Driskel to be a backup behind starter Blaine Gabbert. Colin Kaepernick is not healthy as he's experiencing delays in his recovery from three offseason surgeries.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not practicing    Tue Aug 16, 05:13 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 16, as he continues to deal with his dead arm. Kaepernick has not thrown a pass in six days.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are in Denver for practice on Wednesday and Thursday. They then play the Broncos on Saturday night. We're not expecting to see Kaepernick during the two days of joint practice or in the 49ers second preseason game.

49ers | San Francisco nabs Christian Ponder    Tue Aug 16, 04:26 PM

Free-agent QB Christian Ponder (Broncos) was signed to a one-year deal by the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: The 49ers needed to do something here. Colin Kaepernick has had trouble returning from three offseason surgeries, and backup Thad Lewis is out of the year after suffering a knee injury. That leaves rookie Jeff Driskel as the lone backup behind starter Blaine Gabbert. Ponder gives them veteran insurance in case Kaepernick isn't healthy and Driskel isn't ready.

49ers | DeAndre Smelter might lands on IR    Mon Aug 15, 10:05 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter (knee) missed the preseason opener Sunday, Aug. 14, and he struggled with a hamstring injury in the offseason program. Depending on the severity and prognosis of his condition, beat writer Matt Maiocco feels Smelter might be a candidate for the Reserve/Injured list or IR/Designated to Return list.

Footballguys view: We can rule out Smelter playing a big role in the 49ers offense this year, and he's a marginal dynasty hold at this point. Bruce Ellington and Quinton Patton will be the receivers in three-wide sets with Torrey Smith.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick not at full strength    Mon Aug 15, 05:51 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) is dealing with 'a dead arm,' according to sources. The 49ers hope he'll be back to full strength soon.

Footballguys view: That's not the term you want to hear if you're the 49ers. Kaepernick is recovering from three offseason surgeries and is not yet at full strength. It's looking more and more like Blaine Gabbert will begin the season as the starter.

San Francisco 49ers WR DeAndre Smelter (undisclosed) is week-to-week with an undisclosed injury. Head coach Chip Kelly said Smelter will not be available this week, but did not shed any light on the receiver's condition.

Footballguys view: He's a big, fast WR from Georgia Tech so we're watching Smelter in deep dynasty leagues. This mystery ailment may keep him out of the game against the Broncos on Saturday.
