49ers | Could consider Devery Henderson    Fri May 24, 05:02 PM

The San Francisco 49ers could show interest in free-agent WR Devery Henderson (Saints).

Footballguys view: Henderson has generated zero interest on the open market but that could change now with the 49ers in need of WR help. He's still got the speed to attack a defense vertically but has never been a reliable target.

49ers | Mario Manningham making progress    Fri May 24, 04:05 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Mario Manningham (knee) said he has been able to run and cut during his recovery process. Manningham said he is taking a cautious approach to his rehab and does not have an exact timetable for his return at this point.

Footballguys view: A healthy Manningham is a boost for the 49ers passing game. His deep speed will be a welcome addition as he can stretch the field and open up things underneath. The team needs Manningham to stay healthy and elevate his game now that they've lost Michael Crabtree (Achilles') for the foreseeable future.

49ers | Sign two draft picks    Fri May 24, 03:34 PM

The San Francisco have signed second-round draft choices DE Cornellius Carradine (Florida State) and TE Vance McDonald (Rice) to four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Carradine is a strong pass rusher who was leading the FBS in sacks last year before injuring his knee in November. He can also be counted on as a strong run defender because of his functional strength. McDonald is an athletic TE who lined up outside or in the slot in college. He's the favorite to play TE2 behind Vernon Davis and will fill the role that Delanie Walker (Titans) did last year.

49ers | Three to compete for starting WR job    Fri May 24, 03:32 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said WRs A.J. Jenkins, Quinton Patton and Ricardo Lockette will compete for the vacant starting wide receiver job during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has added about 10 pounds of muscle this offseason to help him beat the jam. He was humbled last year with zero receptions after being the team's 2012 first-round pick. Patton was hyper productive in college but has looked rough in minicamp. Lockette may be the sleeper here. He's Colin Kaepernick's roommate and is faster than the other two players. Fantasy owners need to watch this battle unfold in training camp.

49ers | Ricardo Lockette close with Colin Kaepernick    Fri May 24, 01:20 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Ricardo Lockette, who is roommates with QB Colin Kaepernick, could be an intriguing candidate to step up with WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') injured. Lockette is 6-foot-2, 211 pounds and constantly is being tutored by Kaepernick since they live together. 'He's one of the fastest guys on the team, and I've been trying to keep up with him,' Kaepernick said of Lockette. Kaepernick has helped Lockette understand and simplify the team's playbook, and he impressed offensive coordinator Greg Roman last year while making impressive catches on the scout team. Lockette, a former track star, considers himself more of an outside receiver that can take advantage of his size and speed. 'I'm sure there's things I can specifically name, but there's just something about him that I'm really fired up about,' coach Jim Harbaugh said. 'He's got something else to him, too, besides just the analytical size, strength, speed.'

Footballguys view: Lockette has incredible downfield speed and can easily track the ball on deep passes. He'll get more of a chance to showcase his ability now that Michael Crabtree (Achilles') is out for the foreseeable future. Lockette is an intriguing prospect for owners in deep dynasty leagues.

The San Francisco 49ers restructured C Jonathan Goodwin's contract, reducing his base salary from $3.7 million to $2 million. They guaranteed $1 million of the deal in exchange.

49ers | Randy Moss not an option    Wed May 22, 08:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team isn't considering re-signing WR Randy Moss after learning that WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') tore his Achilles' Wednesday, May 22. Harbaugh said the team is intrigued with the depth of young receivers they have on roster, and they are looking forward to them stepping up to the task. WR A.J. Jenkins, the team's 2012 first-round pick, will have a chance to make an impact in his second year. Jenkins has spent the offseason adding muscle and working with QB Colin Kaepernick.

Footballguys view: The team will turn to veteran Anquan Boldin for an even bigger role in 2013. Boldin can become the underneath target that Crabtree was in 2012. Crabtree had 451 receiving yards on throws within five yards of the line of scrimmage last year, the 6th most in the NFL.

49ers | Have high hopes for Ricardo Lockette    Wed May 22, 06:44 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has high hopes for WR Ricardo Lockette this season.

Footballguys view: The team should have high hopes for Lockette. He's incredibly fast, can change direction without losing much speed, and is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. Lockette has an opportunity for a bigger role after the injury to Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

49ers | Coach does not expect Michael Crabtree to miss season    Wed May 22, 05:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said he does not think WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') will miss the entire 2013 regular season.

Footballguys view: He may not be done for the entire year but Crabtree certainly won't look like himself if he makes it in at the end of the season. It's a huge blow to the 49ers passing game and QB Colin Kaepernick. Including the playoffs, Kaepernick targeted Crabtree more than three times as frequently as any other 49ers player on both third down and in the red zone.

49ers | Michael Crabtree undergoes surgery    Wed May 22, 04:06 PM

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') has undergone surgery to repair his torn Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: The team isn't counting Crabtree out for the season at this point. It's a huge blow to the offense even if Crabtree can return in time for the playoffs.

49ers | Michael Crabtree could be out six months    Wed May 22, 04:05 PM

49ers | Quinton Patton signed    Wed May 22, 03:17 PM

The San Francisco 49ers have signed fourth-round draft choice WR Quinton Patton. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Patton is a big play receiver who can fly down the field. He was hyper productive in college and is known for his downfield ball tracking ability. Patton is known as a hard worker and will have an opportunity for a big role in 2013 because of the injury to Michael Crabtree (Achilles').

49ers | Michael Crabtree suffers torn Achilles'    Wed May 22, 02:15 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Michael Crabtree (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during organized team activities Tuesday, May 21, and will undergo what could be season-ending surgery.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the 49ers here. Good thing they added Anquan Boldin earlier this offseason. Boldin now moves into the WR1 position and the team will look for help behind him. Players like Mario Mannigham, A.J. Jenkins, and Quinton Patton will now have a bigger opportunity.

49ers | Trio worked together in offseason    Tue May 21, 09:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and WRs A.J. Jenkins and Ricardo Lockette lived together for two months in Atlanta during the offseason, working together at a nearby training facility. And since the opening of the team's offseason program, WR Anquan Boldin has served as a mentor, helping the two receivers on route running after practice.

Footballguys view: Jenkins was the team's first-round pick in 2012 but failed to record a catch as a rookie. He's competing with Quinton Patton and Mario Manningham to be the team's WR3. Lockette is an incredibly fast player who can be a reserve receiver and help on special teams.

  49ers | A.J. Jenkins adds muscle    Tue May 21, 09:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins focused this offseason on adding muscle and knowledge of the game. He bulked up to 196 pounds, which is four more than his listed weight. 'If I get to 200 (pounds), I'll be good to go,' Jenkins said.

Footballguys view: Jenkins is fast, and has the ability to crisply cut on his break. However, defenders have been able to push him off the route and break up timing. With added muscle Jenkins should be able to fight through that better.

49ers | Aldon Smith working    Tue May 21, 09:06 PM

49ers | Cornellius Carradine expected to be ready for camp    Fri May 17, 03:30 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Cornellius Carradine (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp. He is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered his last year in college.

Footballguys view: 'Tank' Carradine can be an impact rusher at the next level. He recorded 31 total pressures (hurries & knockdowns) last season, tied with teammate Bjoern Werner (Colts) for the most in the ACC. He is more than just a pass rusher and is known as a strong run defender as well.

49ers | Colt McCoy favorite for No. 2 QB job    Fri May 17, 03:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colt McCoy is the clear favorite to win the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: McCoy is not the greatest QB under the sun but should be able to hold off Scott Tolzien and rookie B.J. Daniels for the backup job.

49ers | A.J. Jenkins looks to have bulked up    Fri May 17, 03:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR A.J. Jenkins has worked hard in the weight room this offseason and appears to have added more muscle than last season. Jenkins is expected to be one of the candidates for the No. 3 wide receiver job this season.

Footballguys view: Jenkins was a surprise first-round pick last year and failed to record a catch as a rookie. The WR3 job in San Francisco is wide open this year and Jenkins could win that spot if he impresses in training camp. He'll compete with Kyle Williams, Mario Manningham, and rookie Quinton Patton for that spot.

Matt Maiocco, from CSNBayArea.com, reports 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke says "I'm a big believer -- we are big believers -- in a three-headed approach" at the RB position.

Footballguys view: Will Frank Gore yield to this approach in 2013? He's still performing at a high level and finished 2012 as the 11th best RB in fantasy football. If healthy, we should see more from Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James this season.

49ers | Marqueis Gray trying to move to TE    Sun May 12, 03:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE MarQueis Gray has had difficulties trying to transition from a quarterback in college to a tight end in the NFL. He is trying to learn a new system and a new position but is ready to work on making the transition as smooth as possible.

Footballguys view: Our Cecil Lammey and Sigmund Bloom watched Gray during the week of practice for the Texas Vs The Nation Game earlier this year in Allen, TX. That week was rough for Gray as he had difficulty running routes and catching passes. He's big, athletic, and has the strength to run over people. Gray lacks the natural receiving ability to make an impact as a pass catcher.

  49ers | B.J. Daniels worked as returner    Sun May 12, 03:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB B.J. Daniels worked as a kick and punt returner during practice Friday, May 10. He said he prepared to be a punt returner before the draft and is willing to help out however he can.

Footballguys view: Daniels is a developmental quarterback because of his extreme athletic ability. He's fast and elusive in the open field. Helping out as a return man can only help his chances of latching on with the team.

49ers | Vance McDonald could see significant playing time    Sun May 12, 03:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald could receive a significant amount of playing time this season as the team's No. 2 tight end.

Footballguys view: The 49ers used multiple tight ends on 57 percent of their plays in 2012, the 2nd-highest rate in the NFL. Former 49ers TE Delanie Walker signed with the Titans in the offseason leaving the door open for McDonald to be a bigger piece of the offense than some think.

49ers | Eric Reid expected to start    Sun May 12, 03:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers S Eric Reid is expected to start at one of the team's safety positions this season.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Reid is an enforcer who loves to make the big hit. He often played as an extra linebacker in the box for the Bayou Bengals. Reid could be asked to play a similar role for the 49ers.

49ers | WR Patton 'nowhere close' to being ready    Sun May 12, 12:02 AM

San Francisco 49ers rookie WR Quinton Patton is 'nowhere close' to being ready to contribute in 2013 according to CSN Bay Area. Patton has a lot of work to do as a route runner and has not been able to create the separation needed at the pro level.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Patton was known for his downfield speed but not for his route running in college. He was hyper productive last year at Louisiana Tech catching 104 passes for 1,392 yards and 13 touchdowns. Patton is known as a hard worker and should be able to improve his game under the guidance of the 49ers staff.

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) said he would be fine with sitting out the entire 2013 season if that is what the team thinks is best. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Lattimore's anterior cruciate ligament looks good, but the team wants him to slow down on his cutting drills.

Footballguys view: San Francisco was the perfect landing spot for Lattimore. He'll be able to recover without any urgency to get him back on the field before he's ready. He could start the season on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the year.

49ers | Adam Snyder signed    Mon May 6, 04:36 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed free-agent OL Adam Snyder (Cardinals). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Synder goes back to the 49ers after one season with the Cardinals. He won't be a starter in San Francisco, but gives the team quality depth on the line as he can play multiple positions.

49ers | Nnamdi Asomugha will have to compete for roster spot    Mon May 6, 02:12 PM

San Francisco 49ers CB Nnamdi Asomugha likely will have to win a role over CB Carlos Rogers, CB Tarell Brown or CB Chris Culliver during training camp to win a roster spot since he does not play on special teams. The team did not give Asomugha any guaranteed money in his deal, which means he has to compete for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: Asomugha is hoping a change of scenery will do him some good. He lost his confidence during his time with the Eagles but gets a fresh start with the 49ers. Playing behind that dominant front seven should bring his confidence back.

49ers | Mario Manningham may be leader for No. 3 WR job    Mon May 6, 02:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Mario Manningham (knee) is expected to be the leading candidate to win the No. 3 wide receiver job if he is healthy during training camp.

Footballguys view: We believe Manningham is the leader in this race. So long as he can get and stay healthy he should be able to keep guys like A.J. Jenkins, Kyle Williams, and rookie Quinton Patton behind him on the depth chart. Long-term we like Patton the best out of this group of wide receivers.

49ers | Anthony Dixon could make team with special teams    Mon May 6, 02:04 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Anthony Dixon likely will make the roster this season if he shows that he is one of the team's best special teams players.

Footballguys view: Dixon has failed to live up to his potential as a pro but does a good job on teams. That reason could keep his roster spot safe for now. The 49ers have one of the deepest backfields in the league with Frank Gore, Kendall Hunter, LaMichael James, Marcus Lattimore, Jewel Hampton and Dixon competing for jobs.

49ers | Marcus Lattimore expected to go on NFI list    Mon May 6, 02:01 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Marcus Lattimore (knee) is expected to begin training camp on the Non-Football Injury list.

Footballguys view: The fit with the 49ers was perfect for Lattimore. With a deep backfield the team will feel no rush to get Lattimore back in action before he's ready. If healthy, Lattimore would have been a top 15 pick in this draft class and the only running back worthy of a first-round grade. Dynasty owners need to pounce on Lattimore if he falls in your rookie draft.

49ers | B.J. Daniels may have lead for No. 3 QB job    Mon May 6, 01:56 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB B.J. Daniels may have an advantage over Scott Tolzien for the No. 3 quarterback job because he would have game-day versatility.

Footballguys view: Daniels is an athletic quarterback with the mobility to run the spread option offense. His arm is stronger than Tolzien's and the two will fight for the QB3 job in training camp.

The San Francisco 49ers would receive the Kansas City Chiefs' second-round pick in 2014 if the Chiefs go 8-8 as part of the deal for QB Alex Smith.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs were 2-14 last year but have made several improvements during the offseason. Andy Reid should make the Chiefs relevant immediately and it wouldn't be a shock to see them finish around .500 in 2013.

49ers | Familiar name invited to minicamp    Wed May 1, 10:05 PM

West Virginia Wesleyan QB Nate Montana, better known as the son of Hall of Fame QB Joe Montana, has accepted an invitation from the San Francisco 49ers to attend their rookie minicamp from May 10-12.

Footballguys view: Nate Montana bounced around in college after initially attending Notre Dame. He's not the same player his dad was, but it's nice to see a 'Montana' back in a 49ers jersey.

49ers | Luke Marquardt might not be ready    Wed May 1, 10:02 PM

The San Francisco 49ers signed undrafted free-agent OT Luke Marquardt (foot), a behemoth out of Azusa Pacific. He took part in his pro day against medical advice, as he was recovering from a broken foot about a week before the 2012 season opener. He had a setback when another fracture in the same foot was discovered on a CT scan at the NFL Scouting Combine. He waited until after his pro day to have a second procedure. He has to stay off his foot for about six weeks, and might not be ready for training camp.

49ers | Kyle Williams might be ready for camp    Wed May 1, 09:54 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Kyle Williams (knee), who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in November, is likely to be ready for the start of training camp. Williams was the team's slot receiver until sustaining the injury.

Footballguys view: Williams will have to fight for a roster spot after the 49ers added another WR (Quinton Patton) in the 2013 NFL draft. Those two will battle with second-year WR A.J. Jenkins for playing time behind Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree.

San Francisco 49ers WR Mario Manningham (knee) is not expected to be ready for training camp. He continues to recover after suffering tears to the anterior cruciate and posterior cruciate ligaments in his left knee in a late-season game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: There's a chance Manningham will begin the season on the PUP list. This would give the team an additional six weeks to see how Manningham recovers.

49ers | Quinton Patton impresses coach early    Wed May 1, 09:50 PM

San Francisco 49ers WR Quinton Patton, selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft, is in the mix for the No. 3 wide receiver job, and he has already stood out to head coach Jim Harbaugh. 'The way he competes for the football, I would say stands out to me in my mind. The way he competes throughout the entire route. And then when the ball's up in the air, he goes up with the mindset that he's competing for the ball and that's his ball.'

Footballguys view: There's a lot to like about Patton's game. He had 104 catches last year and carried the Louisiana Tech offense. Patton has good acceleration and can eat up cushions quickly. He'll get open frequently, has strong hands, and good ball tracking ability when following deep passes.

49ers | No. 3 WR job is wide open    Wed May 1, 09:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers WRs Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree are considered the unquestioned starters, but after that the depth chart battles are wide open. WR Mario Manningham (knee) will be trying to hold off challenges from WR A.J. Jenkins, rookie WR Quinton Patton and WR Kyle Williams (knee). WRs Ricardo Lockette, Chad Hall, Joseph Hastings, Marlon Moore, Chuck Jacobs and B.J. Daniels are also in the mix for roster spots, as the team is rather deep at the position.

Footballguys view: We're expecting the rookie Patton to win this job. He was ultra-productive in college and can fly down the field. Patton can take the top off the defense which will allow more room for underneath receivers like Michael Crabtree and Anquan Boldin.
