Rams | Lamarcus Joyner does not receive deal    Mon Jul 16, 03:53 PM

Los Angeles Rams S Lamarcus Joyner will not receive a long-term deal before the deadline and will play this season on the franchise tag tender.

Footballguys view: Joyner enjoyed a breakout season in 2017 when the team moved him to safety on a full-time basis. He's already signed his $11.2 million franchise tender and will not miss any time in training camp or the preseason. With no long-term deal, Joyner is set to be a free agent in 2019.

NFL | Kenny Vaccaro expected to sign soon    Tue Jul 10, 03:32 AM

Free-agent FS Kenny Vaccaro (Saints) is expected to sign with 'some team' before camp begins. He's healthy but the market for safeties didn't develop as expected and there was no need to hurry and sign a deal when free agency first opened up.

Footballguys view: Vaccaro still has game, so it's just a matter of time - and perhaps injury - before a team steps up.

Panthers | Colin Jones could be starter    Sat Jul 7, 10:55 AM

Carolina Panthers S Colin Jones has a good chance to start at safety alongside 37-year-old FS Mike Adams, despite Jones' presence on special teams, according to Michael Middlehurst-Schwartz of USA TODAY Sports.

Cowboys | Earl Thomas still an option for Dallas    Fri Jul 6, 10:20 AM

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas is still a possible addition by the Dallas Cowboys, according to beat writer Bryan Broaddus.

Footballguys view: Dallas was interested before the draft, and Thomas wants to go there, so this may just be a matter of time. At some point, Thomas needs to show up to camp, so Seattle has to be the one to make a move either by cutting him, trading him or paying him. Dallas may just wait and hope for the first, and only pull the rip cord on the second if Seattle doesn't budge. The Cowboys could really use him at safety too.

Bills | Micah Hyde unlikely to be top returner    Thu Jul 5, 03:05 PM

Buffalo Bills FS Micah Hyde probably will not be the top punt returner for the Bills this season because of his starting role on defense.

Footballguys view: The Bills have some other choices, and so they have no need to risk Hyde getting hurt on a return. We have some concerns about the Bills as a fantasy defense, thinking they are at best middle of the pack for production, and probably not quite even that high. Individually, though, Hyde has top-ten fantasy safety ability and we are high on him for IDP leagues.

Seahawks | Kam Chancellor unlikely to be released    Thu Jul 5, 02:48 PM

Seattle Seahawks SS Kam Chancellor (neck) likely will not be released at this time because the team would take a big salary cap hit this season if they cut Chancellor. He likely will be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list at the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Last time he had his neck checked out, doctors said they saw no healing, so we're pretty sure he isn't playing any time soon - perhaps even ever. The Seahawks have to be careful about cap hit, so this move makes sense. It's not the end of the world for Seattle, but that secondary is going to look wildly different than it did last year.

Giants | Landon Collins likely to land $12 million    Thu Jul 5, 10:02 AM

New York Giants SS Landon Collins is likely to receive at least $12 million annually in his next contract, according to CBSSports.com's Joel Corry.

Footballguys view: Collins is one of the best safeties in the NFL, so the Giants will need to make this happen, especially given their hopes Collins might influence the young, talented and erratic Eli Apple. It will be interesting to see how the roster shakes out with paydays coming for guys like Collins and Odell Beckham Jr in the near future, but a potential rebuild in the offing in just a few years.

Chargers | Derwin James showing upside    Sat Jun 30, 11:41 PM

Los Angeles Chargers SS Derwin James has had an 'outstanding spring,' according to head coach Anthony Lynn.

Footballguys view: The Chargers had James fall into their laps, as his versatility should be easy to take advantage of with their strong set of corners and edge rushers. He should have as many big plays as any defensive rookie and should be a target late in IDP redraft leagues.

Texans | Kareem Jackson happy with new position    Tue Jun 26, 03:45 PM

Houston Texans CB Kareem Jackson said he likes the move to safety and is looking to help the team however he can this season.

Footballguys view: Some corners move to safety later in the their careers with great success. The Texans are hoping that's the case with Jackson, a first-round pick back in 2010. He's lost a step and isn't quite the same player he used to be. Jackson received snaps at the position during offseason workouts and training camp.

Falcons | Ricardo Allen expected to be extended    Mon Jun 25, 03:11 PM

Atlanta Falcons FS Ricardo Allen is expected to receive a contract extension before the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, Allen has been a key piece of the Falcons defense over the last couple of years. The restricted free agent should be able to find common ground with the Falcons.

Cardinals | Tre Boston unhappy with offer    Fri Jun 22, 04:24 PM

Free-agent SS Tre Boston (Chargers) said the contract offer he received from the Arizona Cardinals was very disrespectful.

Footballguys view: Boston was a solid centerfielder last year, and it would seem that multiple teams could use someone with his skillset. The free agent safety market has been abnormally weak, but we think that he'll get an offer that probably includes starter money and role once every team gets a clear picture of their safety depth chart.

Patriots | NE unlikely to pursue Earl Thomas    Thu Jun 21, 04:43 PM

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas likely will not be a trade target for the New England Patriots, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: They'd rather wait until he drops as a free agent. Since the Seahawks and Thomas seem far apart, there's a chance that could happen.

Seahawks | Earl Thomas extension unlikely    Thu Jun 21, 10:28 AM

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas seems unlikely to receive a contract extension from the club, in the opinion of beat writer Brady Henderson. The Seahawks brass has previously extended many core players, but general manager John Schneider used the distinction that many of those extensions a year ahead of free agency were with players on rookie deal. Thomas is not.

Colts | Malik Hooker back by camp?    Sat Jun 16, 09:18 PM

Indianapolis Colts FS Malik Hooker's (knee) rehab is going well, according to general manager Chris Ballard, and Ballard believes Hooker could be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Hooker has been out of action since late October in 2017. There is no timetable for his return from injury, but it looks like he could do a bit of work in training camp and the preseason. The plan is to have him on the field for Week 1 of the regular season, so even if he's available in August they may ease in the talented safety.

Seahawks | Earl Thomas holding out    Sun Jun 10, 11:00 AM

Contrary to previous reports, Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas has decided to hold out of the team's mandatory minicamp due to disappointment over his contract situation.

Footballguys view: Thomas is set to make a base salary of $8.5 million in 2018, and the Seahawks can fine him around $85,000 if he misses the three days of mandatory work. He wants a new deal and Seattle was rumored to be shopping him earlier this year to no avail. Seattle is going to look much different on defense in 2018 and it would help their transition if a guy like Thomas can stick around.

The Los Angeles Chargers signed first-round S Derwin James to a four-year contract worth $12.39 million that includes a $7.1 million signing bonus Friday, June 1, according to a source.

Cardinals | Arizona hosting Tre Boston    Wed May 30, 02:28 PM

Free-agent SS Tre Boston (Chargers) is visiting the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, May 30.

Footballguys view: In 16 games for the Chargers last year, Boston had 79 total tackles, five interceptions and eight passes defensed. He's only got a couple of visits on the open market so far this offseason. Perhaps the Cardinals are the best fit as he played for Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks in Carolina from 2014-2016.

Seahawks | Kam Chancellor wants to play    Wed May 30, 09:36 AM

Updating previous reports, Seattle Seahawks SS Kam Chancellor (neck) wants to play if his body will allow him, he told 13News Now in his hometown of Norfolk, Va. 'If my body says don't play, I'm not playing,' Chancellor said. 'I don't see myself as old. I feel like I'm still in my prime, so it's not an age thing at all. It's just a matter of structural issues in the neck and if they change or not.'

Footballguys view: Per Liz Mathews (USA Today) on Twitter, Chancellor will undergo a neck scan in late June/early July. We'll see if he can receive medical clearance to continue playing in 2018. With a $6.8 million base salary already fully guaranteed, Chancellor is going to play if he can.

Jets | Two Jets should be ready for camp    Tue May 29, 02:22 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (shoulder) and S Marcus Maye (ankle) are expected to be healthy for the start of training camp, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Neither are expected to participate in organized team activities or minicamp, however.

Footballguys view: Smith has struggled to stay healthy during his pro career. Even dating back to his days in college at Ohio State, the speedy wide receiver has had problems staying healthy. He's buried on the depth chart right now, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the 2015 second-round pick not make the team.

Browns | Jabrill Peppers expecting more in 2018    Sun May 27, 09:05 PM

Cleveland Browns FS Jabrill Peppers believes he will make more plays this season because having a year of experience and conditioning under his belt will allow him to play faster.

Footballguys view: Peppers was super hyped coming out of Michigan last year, largely because of his ability to play multiple positions on the football field (defense, offense and special teams). During his first year in the league, Peppers looked like a jack of all trades but a master of none. In fact, he struggled through 13 games as a knee injury slowed him down. Now healthy, Peppers is going to try to play up to that hype and potential he had just a year ago.
