Bills | Buffalo has several options at punt returner    Sun May 21, 06:45 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Brandon Tate, FS Micah Hyde and CB Tre'Davious White all worked as punt returners during organized team activities last week.

Footballguys view: Tate's best chance of making the 53-man roster comes on special teams. If he doesn't win the primary return man gig, then Tate isn't likely to stand out enough as a wide receiver to make the squad.

Jets | Calvin Pryor could be on bubble    Sun May 21, 04:36 PM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor could be released before the 2017 season if FS Rontez Miles outperforms him during training camp, in the opinion of's Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here with the selection of SS Jamal Adams (1st round) and S Marcus Maye (2nd round) in the 2017 NFL draft. Pryor's fifth-year option wasn't picked up this year, so he's set to be a free agent in 2018. He's no lock for the 53-man roster.

Dolphins | T.J. McDonald to receive full reps    Sun May 21, 10:17 AM

Although Miami Dolphins FS T.J. McDonald will miss the first eight games of the 2017 regular season due to a suspension, head coach Adam Gase said the team plans to give him full reps over the next few months.

Footballguys view: That's usually the way teams approach things with suspended players. McDonald is eligible to participate in OTAs, next month's minicamp, training camp and he can play in preseason games. He will be able to rejoin the club in Week 9 against the Oakland Raiders Nov. 5, and is expected to compete for a starting job upon his return.

Colts | Malik Hooker, Clayton Geathers may start    Sat May 20, 03:07 PM

Indianapolis Colts S Malik Hooker (hernia, shoulder) and S Clayton Geathers (neck) likely will be the starting safeties in Week 1 if they are both healthy, in the opinion of's Mike Wells.

Footballguys view: Hooker was one of the best players in the 2017 NFL draft regardless of position. He can roam all over the field with his nose for the ball and burst to the play. Geathers can play close to the line of scrimmage and be used as a run-stopper.

Colts | Malik Hooker signs    Thu May 18, 11:58 AM

Indianapolis Colts S Malik Hooker, a first-round pick, signed his rookie four-year deal Thursday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Hooker is the 11th first round pick to sign with his respective team. The Chargers' Mike Williams - seventh pick overall - is the highest pick to have signed so far. Hooker has great ball skills but his tackling leaves a bit to be desired, so he's not going to instantly help the run defense.

Los Angeles Chargers fourth-round draft choice S Rayshawn Jenkins signed his four-year deal with the Chargers Wednesday, May 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Texans | Houston makes several roster moves    Tue May 16, 04:46 PM

Houston Texans OT Dimitric Camiel, RB Kenny Hilliard, T.J. Mutcherson and WR Tevin Jones were released Tuesday, May 16. RB Dare Ogunbowale was re-signed and undrafted free-agent WR Chris Thompson (Florida) was signed in corresponding moves.

Footballguys view: Ogunbowale showed good ability in college at Wisconsin, but he should only be counted on as a reserve or change-of-pace back. The Texans have a talented backfield, and Ogunbowale is going to have a hard time cracking the 53-man roster.

Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall (knee) could begin the 2017 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Hall is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Redskins | No return date yet for DeAngelo Hall    Tue May 16, 02:25 PM

Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall (knee) does not have a target date for his return as he continues to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: With a $5.1 million cap number...and with no timetable for his return...Hall could be asked to take a pay cut in 2017. Hall has missed 31 of his last 48 games due to a litany of injuries.

Saints | Shiloh Keo released    Mon May 15, 05:52 PM

New Orleans Saints SS Shiloh Keo was released Monday, May 15.

Footballguys view: A couple of years ago, Keo hit up (then Broncos DC) Wade Phillips on Twitter for a job. Perhaps he could end up on Phillips defense with the Rams in 2017.

Bears | Eddie Jackson signs contract    Mon May 15, 04:02 PM

Chicago Bears S Eddie Jackson signed his four-year rookie deal Monday, May 15.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Alabama, Jackson is an instinctive player who seems to always be around the ball. Jackson can make plays as a return man as well. He'll compete for playing time early as a rookie.

Jaguars | Two Jaguars released, two added    Mon May 15, 10:35 AM

Jets | Marcus Maye expected to start    Sun May 14, 04:14 PM

New York Jets S Marcus Maye is expected to be the starting free safety this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Florida this year, Maye mostly played free safety in college but he did also get snaps at slot corner. He's a rangy player with the athleticism to roam the back half of the field. Maye will team with fellow rookie Jamal Adams (2017 first-round pick) to be featured in the new-look Jets secondary.

Jets | Jamal Adams likely will be SS    Sun May 14, 04:06 PM

New York Jets S Jamal Adams is expected to be the starting strong safety this upcoming season and could be the defensive play caller depending on how he progresses.

Footballguys view: Adams can be an impact player for the Jets from day one. He's got an enforcer's mentality and is known as a leader who backs up his words with outstanding play on the field. Some in the scouting community have compared his skill set to that of former Cowboys great Darren Woodson.

Cardinals | Arizona signs three more picks    Sat May 13, 04:38 PM

Arizona Cardinals fifth-round draft choice OT Will Holden, fifth-round draft choice RB T.J. Logan and sixth-round draft choice CB Johnathan Ford signed four-year contracts Saturday, May 13. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Logan could be everything the team wanted WR Andre Ellington to be as a running back. The North Carolina back is compactly built and can change direction smoothly with the rock in his hands. He's not a banger between the tackles, but Logan is dangerous in space. Logan should compete for the backup/change-of-pace role behind superstar David Johnson in 2017.

Cowboys | Dallas signs most of its draft class    Fri May 12, 02:56 AM

The Dallas Cowboys signed draft picks CB Chidobe Awuzie, WR Ryan Switzer, S Xavier Woods, CB Marquez White, DL Joey Ivie, WR Noah Brown and DE Jordan Carrell to their rookie contracts Thursday, May 11. Third-round pick CB Jourdan Lewis is the team's lone unsigned draft choice.

Footballguys view: Switzer and Brown are the fantasy assets to consider in dynasty leagues here. While Switzer plays more like Wes Welker, Brown has drawn comparisons to Dez Bryant because of his ball skills. Switzer can work as a return man in addition to duties as a slot wide receiver. Brown is not as talented as Bryant, but he is fast and able to make crazy catches.

Seahawks | Tedric Thompson signs rookie deal    Thu May 11, 08:04 PM

Seattle Seahawks fourth-round S Tedric Thompson agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the club Thursday, May 11.

Eagles | Philadelphia signs nine UDFAs    Thu May 11, 06:02 PM

Undrafted free-agents RB Corey Clement (Wisconsin), DT Winston Craig (Richmond), QB Jerod Evans (Virginia Tech), CB Randall Goforth (UCLA), P Cameron Johnston (Ohio State), C Tyler Orlosky (West Virginia), S Tre Sullivan (Shepherd), DT Charles Walker (Oklahoma), WR Greg Ward (Houston) and CB Jomal Wiltz (Iowa State) signed with the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday, May 11.

Footballguys view: Clement is the interesting player here. The Wisconsin running back is big (220 pounds), athletic and capable of thriving in a one-cut offense. Questions about his ability to stay healthy and character concerns caused him to fall undrafted in 2017.

Link to story

Colts | Malik Hooker to receive a chance    Tue May 9, 10:31 AM

Indianapolis Colts S Malik Hooker will receive every opportunity to win a starting job, in the opinion of beat writer Mike Wells. Hooker returned three of his seven interceptions in 2016 for touchdowns, and the Colts didn't return a single one for a score in 2016.

Footballguys view: Hooker is rangy and plays with high football intelligence. He'll do a good job of reading the play as it unfolds in front of him, and Hooker has the athleticism to make it to the ball swiftly.

Jets | Jamal Adams highly impressive    Sun May 7, 11:45 AM

New York Jets S Jamal Adams was the best player on the field - and it wasn't close - whenever he was on the field during rookie minicamp, according to NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes, who added the No. 6 overall pick's speed really stood out.

Footballguys view: Adams is one of the most impressive players in this class...both as a leader and a player. He's an enforcer who can roam the field and deal justice to opponents. Adams can make an immediate impact as a pro.

Chiefs | KC inks three draft picks    Sat May 6, 11:05 AM

Kansas City Chiefs fourth-round WR Jehu Chesson (Michigan), fifth-round LB Ukeme Eligwe (Georgia Southern) and sixth-round S Leon McQuay III (USC) signed their four-year rookie contracts Saturday, May 6.

Footballguys view: Chesson is an interesting player to monitor. The big receiver was a standout for the Wolverines, but a knee injury in 2015 (and an extended recovery) caused his production to dip. He's not going to blow past anybody, but Chesson is big (6'3" 205 pounds) and with his large wingspan he can win at the catch point consistently.

Footballguys view: It's a Kyle Shanahan offense, so we're going to be monitoring any tight end on the roster as this is known to be a TE-friendly system. Kittle is a player to watch and drew comparisons to Charles Clay (Bills) in the pre-draft process.

Jets | New York releases three players    Thu May 4, 03:50 PM

New York Jets FS Marcus Gilchrist was released Thursday, May 4. CB Nick Marshall and FB Chris Swain were waived.

Seahawks | Earl Thomas should be ready    Thu May 4, 01:09 PM

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (leg) is expected to be healthy enough to play by Week 1, head coach Pete Carroll reiterated Thursday, May 4. Thomas fractured his tibia late last season.

Footballguys view: While he may be expected back, the Seahawks did pick up three safeties in the NFL Draft, so they are clearly looking long term at the position. None were terribly high picks - Delano Hill was the highest pick, selected in the third -- but the way the Seahawks build teams, they could all contribute.

Free-agent FS Taylor Mays (Bengals) has a tryout with the New England Patriots at their rookie minicamp, according to a source.

Jets | Calvin Pryor's option won't be picked up    Tue May 2, 08:31 AM

New York Jets S Calvin Pryor won't have his fifth-year option picked up for 2018, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here...especially considering the Jets added two safeties in the first two rounds of the 2017 NFL draft. There has been buzz about the Jets wanting to trade Pryor, but he's been a colossal bust and is unlikely to generate much (if any) interest.

Packers | Ha Ha Clinton-Dix's option picked up    Mon May 1, 02:52 PM

Green Bay Packers SS Ha Ha Clinton-Dix had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 1.

Footballguys view: An easy decision for the Packers here. Clinton-Dix is one of the most durable young players in the league and has never missed a game as a pro. He's been productive and effective patrolling the field for the Packers defense. Clinton-Dix is coming off a career-high five interceptions in 2016.
