NFL | Damarious Randall could play corner    Sat Apr 11, 10:45 PM

Arizona State FS Damarious Randall played safety in college, but some NFL teams are viewing him as a nickel corner because of his size.

Footballguys view: Randall is considered to be undersized at the safety position. He likes to play close to the line of scrimmage, and his hip swivel needs to improve on longer routes in coverage. He's a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Bills | Dawan Landry visiting    Tue Apr 7, 01:14 PM

Free-agent SS Dawan Landry (Jets) is visiting with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, April 7.

NFL | Damien Parms to visit two teams    Tue Apr 7, 06:37 AM

Florida Atlantic SS Damien Parms will visit the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals in the weeks leading up to the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Parms is an in-the-box safety who arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He struggles to cover and his play is a bit robotic and lacks instincts. Parms should be a late-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Buccaneers | Adrian Amos works out    Mon Apr 6, 06:31 AM

Penn State S Adrian Amos recently worked out for Tampa Bay Buccaneers safeties coach Mikal Smith in advance of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Amos is a smart player who does a good job of recognizing routes as they unfold in front of him. Athletic and rangy, Amos can cover deep and can be utilized as a slot corner if needed. He struggles in run defense, and Amos should be a fifth- or sixth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Redskins | Dashon Goldson acquired by Washington    Fri Apr 3, 09:58 AM

The Washington Redskins acquired FS Dashon Goldson and a seventh-round pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for a sixth-round pick Friday, April 3.

Footballguys view: We're surprised that Washington would take on Goldson's $8 million cap hit. That's what happens when you're desperate for help at the safety position. We're also shocked that Tampa was able to get anything for Goldson as he's been a bust during his time with the Buccaneers.

He competed at the veteran combine last week, and the Packers must've liked what they saw.

Vikings | Taylor Mays signs    Tue Mar 24, 05:59 PM

Minnesota Vikings SS Taylor Mays re-signed to a one-year deal Tuesday, March 24. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Mays is reunited with Mike Zimmer here. During their time together with the Bengals, Zimmer used Mays as a hybrid linebacker/safety on defense. Mays brings an attitude to the Vikings defense as an "in the box" player.

Saints | Jairus Byrd fully healthy    Mon Mar 23, 01:22 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) is fully recovered from a torn meniscus in his knee that caused him to sit out most of 2014, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.

Footballguys view: This news has to make the Saints happy. They paid a hefty price for him last offseason, then he was out for almost the entire year. Their defense will be immediately better with Byrd at full strength.

Free-agent SS Taylor Mays (Bengals) left his visit with the Minnesota Vikings without a contract. Mays was scheduled to have dinner with team officials and check out the facilities.

Footballguys view: Mays is an in-the-box safety who has a nose for the ball. If added, Mays would help give the Vikings defense more swagger--but just don't ask him to cover.

Miami Dolphins FS Louis Delmas (knee) said he'll definitely be ready for the start of the 2015 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee last year.

Footballguys view: Delmas is a talented player, but man alive is he banged up a lot. The team would be wise to take it easy on the veteran as he comes back from yet another injury.

Free-agent SS Jeron Johnson (Seahawks) has agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins on a two-year deal worth $4 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Johnson is an in-the-box safety who can work well as a run-defender. He was a backup in Seattle behind Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor, but Washington might count on him as a starter.

Updating an earlier report, free-agent SS Kurt Coleman (Chiefs) signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 16.

Free-agent FS Marcus Gilchrist (Chargers) is finalizing a four-year deal with the New York Jets, and he is expected to sign Friday, March 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jets have done an "extreme" makeover to their secondary this offseason. Gilchrist joins Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine as players added to the position. Gilchrist played over 900 defensive snaps in 2014 at multiple positions. He finished the season with 76 tackles, 1 interception, 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles. Gilchrist played 401 of those snaps in the slot, 306 at strong safety and 201 at free safety, and his position versatility will come in handy for the Jets.

Raiders | Add Nate Allen    Thu Mar 12, 01:16 PM

The Oakland Raiders signed FS Nate Allen (Eagles) Thursday, March 12. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Texans | Closing in on a deal with Rahim Moore    Thu Mar 12, 11:57 AM

Free-agent FS Rahim Moore (Broncos) is closing in on a deal with the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Moore was arguably the second-best safety on the market behind Devin McCourty (Patriots). He plays with a lot of confidence, and Moore can roam the field looking to make plays in coverage and against the run.

Footballguys view: Rolle isn't quite the player he used to be, but he'll make some big plays here and there. The Bears get a veteran leader for the defense, but make no mistake about it...his skills are on the decline.
