Chiefs | Eric Berry cleared for practice    Wed Jul 29, 01:40 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry (illness) has been cleared to take the practice field with the team Wednesday, July 29. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in December 2014. After several rounds of thorough testing and a process that concluded Tuesday, July 28, he has been given the green light.

49ers | Two players cleared to practice    Tue Jul 28, 06:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Darnell Dockett (knee) and SS Jimmie Ward (foot) have been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: Dockett missed all of last season for the Cardinals as he tore his ACL last August. The 49ers should ease the aging pass-rusher back into action. He should work as a part-time player when healthy. Ward flashed as a rookie last year before going down in the second half of 2014. He'll likely work as a nickel corner this year, but he's still got the upside to be a quality starter on the outside someday.

Seahawks | Earl Thomas iffy for opener    Thu Jul 23, 12:29 PM

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (shoulder) isn't expected to be cleared for training camp, and his status is questionable for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Thomas is one of the best in the game when healthy, so expect the Seahawks to proceed with caution as he returns from this injury. He underwent surgery for a torn labrum back in February, and reports indicate there haven't been any setbacks. It's just going to take some time for him to be ready to get back on the field. Stay tuned here.

Bills | Aaron Williams should be ready for camp    Mon Jul 13, 06:34 PM

Buffalo Bills FS Aaron Williams (hip) should be ready for the start of training camp after undergoing hip surgery earlier this offseason, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: Williams is a physical playmaker who can make his presence known as a run-defender. He should snare 50 or more tackles in 2015 if healthy.

Giants | Landon Collins signs    Fri Jun 19, 11:00 AM

New York Giants SS Landon Collins signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, June 19.

Footballguys view: Collins is decisive as a run-defender, and he arrives at the ball with natural violence. He's an intimidating presence who can star playing close to the line of scrimmage. Collins is a smart defender who puts himself in the right position as a coverage player, but he needs to make better plays on the ball.

Saints | Two Saints sitting out    Thu Jun 18, 12:10 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) and SS Kenny Vaccaro are sitting out of practice Thursday, June 18.

Footballguys view: At the end of minicamp, this is no real worry. Byrd struggled in 2014 before tearing his lateral meniscus, but he should be ready to go for camp. The Saints need him to play better though, considering how much they paid to acquire him last offseason.

Browns | Tashaun Gipson sitting out    Wed Jun 17, 12:09 PM

Cleveland Browns FS Tashaun Gipson (hamstring) is not participating in practice Wednesday, June 17, because of a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Gipson skipped voluntary workouts earlier this year after being upset with only a second-round tender as a restricted free agent. He ended up signing his one-year contract, but there are some Browns beat writers who think he'll get a long-term deal with the team in the near future. Either way, the Browns know he's got talent and they're not going to risk further injury by pushing him back with this hamstring injury.

Packers | Sign Damarious Randall    Tue Jun 16, 04:56 PM

Green Bay Packers first-round pick rookie CB Damarious Randall signed his four-year deal Tuesday, June 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Arizona State standout is a bit of a 'tweener as he can play both cornerback and safety. He's a competitive player who works hard to break up passes. Randall does a good job of anticipating routes and has the foot quickness to get himself in place to make plays.

49ers | Jimmie Ward expects to be ready    Sun Jun 14, 09:50 AM

San Francisco 49ers SS Jimmie Ward (foot) said he should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Ward has missed all of OTAs recovering from foot surgery. A first-round pick in 2014, Ward has upside but he's got to stay healthy. He showed improvement as the season went on last year before this foot surgery knocked him out in Week 10. We'll see if he can get healthy and start to build on the experience he gained last year.

Browns | Tashaun Gipson signs tender    Fri Jun 12, 07:02 PM

Cleveland Browns restricted free-agent FS Tashaun Gipson signed his one-year tender offer Friday, June 12, and is expected to participate in the team's minicamp next week. He is scheduled to make $2.356 million this season.

Footballguys view: Gipson was skipping voluntary workouts, but he ended up signing his one-year tender anyway. The Browns put a second-round tender on him, and Gipson would have risked losing $1.7 million had he not signed by Monday's deadline. Some beat writers feel that Gipson will get a new long-term deal from the Browns, but that seems a tad outlandish at this time. If Gipson hits the open market, several teams should be interested in this elite cover safety with the ability to flip the field.

Falcons | William Moore back in action    Tue Jun 9, 01:42 PM

Atlanta Falcons SS William Moore (shoulder) returned to practice for the first time Tuesday, June 9, since having major right shoulder surgery in the winter.

Footballguys view: Moore is an intimidating presence on the field, and getting him back will boost the defense. The Falcons have made a lot of moves to improve that side of the ball, and new head coach Dan Quinn will build a quality defense.

Saints | Jairus Byrd getting close to return    Wed Jun 3, 07:11 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) is in good shape and working to get through his knee injury, according to head coach Sean Payton, Wednesday, June 3. Byrd still needs to do some maintenance on his knee, but he is nearing a return to organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The Saints added Byrd in free agency last year, paid him a ton of money (six-year, $54 million), and had high hopes for his future with the team. Byrd then suffered through one of the worst seasons he could possibly have, including this knee injury. We've see a steady decline in production since his best season 2011, and Byrd is a risky add for fantasy owners in IDP leagues.

Seahawks | Earl Thomas sitting out    Tue May 26, 10:22 PM

Seattle Seahawks FS Earl Thomas (shoulder) did not participate in organized team activities Tuesday, May 26.

Miami Dolphins FS Louis Delmas (knee) participated in organized team activities Tuesday, May 26. Head coach Joe Philbin said Delmas moved around well during practice.

Jets | Marcus Gilchrist should be ready for camp    Sun May 24, 09:42 AM

New York Jets FS Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder) is not expected to participate in any of the offseason workouts because of his shoulder injury but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: The Jets grabbed Gilchrist in free agency with a four-year, $22 million deal with $8.5 million guaranteed. He'll be the team's centerfielder in 2015, and they'll ask him to roam the secondary looking to make plays on the ball. The shoulder scope is a minor surgery, and Gilchrist should be near 100 percent healthy when training camp rolls around.

Falcons | William Moore hopes to be cleared soon    Mon May 18, 10:39 PM

Atlanta Falcons SS William Moore (shoulder) said he hopes to receive clearance to practice in a few weeks. He said he is still rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder but his body feels good.

Footballguys view: Moore is expected to be one of the starting safeties in 2015 if he is healthy. Getting Moore back would boost the Falcons secondary. They'll also benefit from a better group of pass-rushers up front.

Jets | Marcus Gilchrist had offseason scope    Thu May 14, 06:12 PM

New York Jets SS Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder) had a scope performed following the 2014 season. Gilchrist wouldn't confirm what the purpose of the scope was Thursday, May 14, but he said something 'needed to be fixed.' Gilchrist has been limited so far in camp.

Footballguys view: We'll see if he's still hampered when training camp comes along. The only other strong safety on the roster is Jaiquawn Jarrett, so getting Gilchrist back is a priority.

Lions | Glover Quin restructures    Wed May 13, 09:06 AM

Detroit Lions S Glover Quin restructured his contract Wednesday, May 13, to create $2.17 million of salary cap space. His $4 million base salary was slashed to $745,000 for 2015.

Footballguys view: Quin has emerged as one of the top safeties in the league during his two seasons with the Lions. He's got 10 interceptions over that period and is a valuable asset for their defense. This move gives the Lions some much-needed breathing room on the salary cap. They are paying out more than $17 million in dead money this season and have a total cap number over $151 million according to OverTheCap.com.

Buccaneers | D.J. Swearinger claimed    Tue May 12, 05:13 PM

Free-agent SS D.J. Swearinger was officially claimed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday, May 12.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers sit at the top of the waiver wire priority list, and they've been looking to upgrade their secondary all offseason. Swearinger struggles in coverage and he sometimes takes bad angles as a run-defender, but he's a strong intimidator who can play close to the line of scrimmage. He'll compete with Bradley McDougald for the starting strong safety position.

Panthers | D.J. Swearinger on radar    Mon May 11, 10:29 PM

The Carolina Panthers are interested in SS D.J. Swearinger, waived by the Houston Texans Monday, May 11. Many teams would have to pass on him for the Panthers to get a claim off waivers.

Footballguys view: We're not sure Swearinger is going to get picked up via waivers. He's struggled covering and in run support. The Panthers are looking for secondary help, but Swearinger isn't the best answer.

Texans | D.J. Swearinger leaves Texans    Mon May 11, 11:52 AM

Houston Texans SS D.J. Swearinger announced on Instagram that he and the team parted ways Monday, May 11.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Swearinger was a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft but he couldn't make a positive impression with the Texans. Swearinger failed to make plays against the run or the pass, and that's why no team was willing to trade for him. Now that he's on the open market, there might be a few teams interested in giving Swearinger a look.

Vikings | Two options picked up    Mon May 4, 11:24 AM

Minnesota Vikings OT Matt Kalil and FS Harrison Smith had their fifth-year options for 2016 exercised Monday, May 4.

Footballguys view: Kalil will continue to give the Vikings a strong presence on the offensive line with the extra year added to his deal. Smith has developed into a quality player for the Vikings and it's no surprise they didn't want him to hit free agency.

Packers | Damarious Randall selected 30th overall    Thu Apr 30, 11:19 PM

Arizona State S Damarious Randall was selected 30th overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Randall has the mindset of an in-the-box strong safety, and he is a tough player who isn't afraid to mix it up as a run-defender. He has the body of a small free safety or corner which allows him to shine in coverage. Randall will get out of position biting on pump fakes, so he'll need to improve his discipline as a pro.

Jets | Jaiquawn Jarrett signs tender    Fri Apr 24, 04:41 PM

New York Jets restricted free-agent SS Jaiquawn Jarrett signed his tender offer Friday, April 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jarrett was decent in pass coverage but a liability against the run. Depending on how Calvin Pryor does in his second season, as well as how the Jets' rebooted secondary looks, he may only be depth.

Free-agent SS Adrian Wilson (Bears) is expected to retire Monday, April 20, and join the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff. The Cardinals, the team Wilson played for from 2001-2012, have announced a press conference.

Footballguys view: Wilson hasn't played in the NFL since 2012 after his failed comeback attempt with the Bears last year. He'll likely retire a member of the Cardinals and then join their staff in some capacity.

Titans | No offer to Stevie Brown    Mon Apr 20, 07:07 AM

Free-agent FS Stevie Brown (Giants) has not received a contract offer from the Tennessee Titans, but the team remains interested in him.

Footballguys view: Brown wants to prove he can bounce back after a disappointing season in 2014. He tore his ACL in 2013, but Brown was a good starter for the Giants in 2012..and he wants to get back to that level of play.

Ravens | Adrian Amos invited to pro day    Sun Apr 19, 02:54 AM

Penn State S Adrian Amos has been invited to the Baltimore Ravens local prospect day.

Footballguys view: Athletic and rangy, Amos can turn and stay with receivers on downfield routes. In addition to playing safety, Amos can also line up as a slot corner. He's a liability in run defense, and that keeps him playing outside the box.

Ravens | Four ERFAs re-sign    Fri Apr 17, 04:52 PM

NFL | Damarious Randall could play corner    Sat Apr 11, 10:45 PM

Arizona State FS Damarious Randall played safety in college, but some NFL teams are viewing him as a nickel corner because of his size.

Footballguys view: Randall is considered to be undersized at the safety position. He likes to play close to the line of scrimmage, and his hip swivel needs to improve on longer routes in coverage. He's a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Raiders | Larry Asante signs tender    Tue Apr 7, 04:14 PM

Oakland Raiders FS Larry Asante signed his restricted free-agent tender Tuesday, April 7.

Bills | Dawan Landry visiting    Tue Apr 7, 01:14 PM

Free-agent SS Dawan Landry (Jets) is visiting with the Buffalo Bills Tuesday, April 7.

NFL | Damien Parms to visit two teams    Tue Apr 7, 06:37 AM

Florida Atlantic SS Damien Parms will visit the Oakland Raiders and Arizona Cardinals in the weeks leading up to the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Parms is an in-the-box safety who arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He struggles to cover and his play is a bit robotic and lacks instincts. Parms should be a late-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Penn State S Adrian Amos recently worked out for Tampa Bay Buccaneers safeties coach Mikal Smith in advance of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Amos is a smart player who does a good job of recognizing routes as they unfold in front of him. Athletic and rangy, Amos can cover deep and can be utilized as a slot corner if needed. He struggles in run defense, and Amos should be a fifth- or sixth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.
