Ravens | BAL could cut six    Mon Feb 20, 11:02 AM

Baltimore Ravens LB Elvis Dumervil ($6 million), S Lardarius Webb ($5.5 million), CB Shareece Wright ($2.6 million) C Jeremy Zuttah ($2.3 million), CB Kyle Arrington ($2.1 million) and S Kendrick Lewis ($1.8 million) could be cut to create $20.3 million in salary cap space.

Footballguys view: The Ravens only have $15 million in cap space at this time, and that ranks among the lowest in the league. Freeing up $20 million extra would put them around the middle of the pack in the NFL, and it would give them a fighting chance with some of the better free agents out there.

49ers | Kyle Shanahan will control roster    Thu Feb 9, 05:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will have control of the 53-man roster, while general manager John Lynch will control the 90-man roster, free agency and draft moves.

Footballguys view: The two have to work together though, because Shanahan will need some influence on the larger roster to get his 53 guys. It's a whole new world for the 49ers with no Trent Baalke looming over the precedings like a Grim Reaper. We hope it works more smoothly.

Lions | Miles Killebrew ticketed for bigger role?    Mon Feb 6, 12:20 PM

Detroit Lions S Miles Killebrew was able to carve out a role as a rookie in 2016, showing enough physicality to line up inside the box and enough speed to cover tight ends. As a result, FS Glover Quin suggested in a recent interview that Killebrew was the player on the Lions' defense most likely to break out in 2017.

Footballguys view: Killebrew is part of the new breed safety/linebacker tweener that appears to be a key role in defenses, where ten years ago, they were players without a position. Deep IDP dynasty leaguers should make sure he hasn't been left on the waiver wire.

Saints | Jairus Byrd may require pay cut    Mon Feb 6, 11:25 AM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd will likely have to take a pay cut to remain with the Saints in 2017, in the opinion of beat writer Mike Triplett. He has a $7.8 million salary with an $11.2 million salary cap hit.

Footballguys view: Byrd was a surprising big ticket signing for the Saints defense in 2014, and he has been an all-time free agent to this point. He played his best football under the big contract last year, but he was still nowhere near worth his paycheck. If he hits the free agent market, Byrd could reunite with his father Gill Byrd, the new defensive backs coach in Buffalo, where his son played the best football of his career.

49ers | John Lynch to ease into role    Sat Feb 4, 09:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch will ease into the role by leaning on Tom Gamble, the team's 2016 assistant general manager, and Paraag Marathe, who is expected to be in charge of contract negotiations.

Footballguys view: It sounds like Lynch will be given up/down calls and set the tone for the direction of the franchise, but not have to be thrown into the deep end. The 49ers are starting from square one, so this situation can accommodate Lynch learning on the job.

Jaguars | Johnathan Cyprien may test market    Sat Feb 4, 01:12 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent SS Johnathan Cyprien probably will be allowed to test the free-agent market this offseason, but the Jaguars may be interested in re-signing him, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike DiRocco.

Footballguys view: Cyprien improved this year and had a role more tailored for his in the box game, but he still hasn't become the player the Jaguars envisioned when they took him in the second round in 2013. If someone overpays him, the Jaguars won't mind letting him walk, but they probably haven't totally foreclosed bringing him back at the right price.

Chiefs | Eric Berry will sit out season if tagged    Thu Feb 2, 07:19 PM

Updating a previous item, Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry said he is prepared to 'sit the season out' if the team franchise tags him again for a second consecutive year. 'I'll just take that time to chill with my family, honestly,' Berry said. 'I just want what's right. That's it.'

Footballguys view: Berry would get a handsome 13 million dollars if he is franchised, but that is less than he would get guaranteed on a new long term contract. His willingness to sit out instead of playing under a second tag indicates the unfairness of the current CBA terms in some players' eyes.

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent SS Eric Berry said he will not play under the franchise tag in 2017. Berry is looking to sign a long-term contract during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Berry is a boom/bust player from play to play, which means that the Chiefs know both the upside and downside of having him as a defensive keystone. They like their up and coming safeties behind him, so they might not be willing to pay him the most on the open market.

NFL | Malik Hooker to miss NFL combine    Wed Feb 1, 01:47 PM

Ohio State S Malik Hooker (shoulder, abdomen) will miss the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine after undergoing separate surgeries for a torn shoulder labrum and a hernia Tuesday, Jan. 31, according to NFL Draft Scout's Matt Miller. NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reported Hooker will be ready for training camp and should remain a top-10 draft choice.

Footballguys view: Hooker has rare range for a safety prospect, which will make him very valuable in a pass-heavy league that requires flexibility on defense. He also played in a top program, which should ease any concerns of teams looking to spend a high pick on him that would have liked to work him out before the draft.

Cardinals | Tyran Mathieu almost fully healthy    Tue Jan 31, 05:59 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu's (knee) surgically repaired knee is estimated to be 96 percent healthy, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Mathieu's previously injured shoulder is at full strength.

Footballguys view: Mathieu only played ten games last season, so hopefully he can have an uneventful offseason and not be racing to get back on the field after serious surgery as he was last year. Mathieu has reportedly added ten pounds to help his durability in the future.

Bills | Buffalo cleans house on coaching staff    Tue Jan 31, 01:30 PM

Footballguys view: The Bills are removing almost all traces of the short-lived Rex Ryan era in Buffalo. McDermott will have a chance to put his fingerprints on most of the staff as the team tries to get out of the doldrums of mediocrity.

  49ers | 49ers' power structure in place    Mon Jan 30, 11:27 PM

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch will have the 'final say' over the draft, free agency and the 90-man roster. Meanwhile, Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who is likely the team's next head coach, will have the final say on the 53-man roster, according to ESPN's Jim Trotter.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are giving Lynch a lot of power in his first personnel job, but the hope is that Shanahan had input in his hiring. This is the picture of an organization truly rebuilding from the ground up.

Packers | Ha Ha Clinton-Dix plays every snap    Mon Jan 30, 09:29 AM

Green Bay Packers SS Ha Ha Clinton-Dix played every snap on defense in 2016. He is one of five defenders to do so this season. He played 1,029 snaps in the regular season and 207 in the postseason.

Footballguys view: Oakland safety Reggie Nelson, Detroit safety Glover Quin, San Francisco cornerback Rashard Robinson, and Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree were the others. Clinton-Dix was a rock in a secondary that suffered multiple key injuries this year and was forced to play a lot of inexperienced players.

49ers | San Francisco to name John Lynch GM    Sun Jan 29, 08:44 PM

The San Francisco 49ers will hire retired SS John Lynch as general manager, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wow! Talk about your surprising moves, no beat writer around the team was mentioning Lynch as a candidate for 49ers general manager. After 15 years in the NFL, Lynch retired in 2008 and has been a color analyst with FOX ever since. We love this out of the box thinking, but let's hope Lynch can put more experienced personnel men around him. He has no experience running a team or officially evaluating talent.

Seahawks | Seattle looking at Calvin Pryor?    Sat Jan 28, 08:31 PM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor is expected to be on the trading block this offseason, and a league source believes the Seattle Seahawks could offer OT Germain Ifedi in exchange for Pryor.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in 2014, Pryor is known as a big hitter but he's a liability in coverage. His aggressive playing style could fit in well with the Legion of Boom.

Chiefs | Eric Berry hopes to re-sign    Wed Jan 25, 05:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent SS Eric Berry said he hopes to re-sign with the Chiefs this offseason.

Footballguys view: We're still a bit shocked the Chiefs didn't do something to lock up Berry sooner. They don't have much cap space ($4.6 million according to OverTheCap.com), so perhaps Berry won't be able to stay with the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2010.
