Patriots | Rolando McClain leaves without contract    Mon Mar 30, 07:44 PM

Free-agent LB Rolando McClain (Cowboys) had a positive meeting with the New England Patriots Monday, March 30, but left without a contract.

Footballguys view: McClain revamped his pro career last season with the Dallas Cowboys. They've been lowballing him so far this offseason, but this meeting with the Patriots might prompt the Cowboys to make a better offer. McClain played 606 defensive snaps in 2014, with 119 coming on third down.

Patriots | Chandler Jones had surgery    Mon Mar 30, 08:49 AM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (undisclosed) has been at Gillette Stadium for much of the offseason rehabbing from an undisclosed surgery. He has been walking with the aid of crutches.

Footballguys view: Jones missed six games last year due to a hip injury that did not require surgery. Nobody knows what he went under the knife for, but expect the Patriots to bring him back slowly as he recovers.

Patriots | Sealver Siliga had surgery    Fri Mar 27, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots DT Sealver Siliga (undisclosed) is in a walking boot after having undisclosed offseason surgery.

Footballguys view: Siliga was put on IR/Designated to Return last year with a foot injury. When he returned, Siliga was in the starting lineup next to Vince Wilfork. With Wilfork gone, Siliga could have a larger role this year. The team will ease him back in as he recovers.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower to miss several months    Thu Mar 26, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) will miss six to seven months after undergoing surgery on a torn right labrum.

Footballguys view: Hightower's availability for the beginning of the regular season could now be in jeopardy. We could see the Patriots decide to put him on the PUP list to begin the season. If that happens, Hightower would be forced to miss the first six weeks of the regular season. After that time, the Patriots would have three weeks to decide whether or not to activate Hightower or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Patriots | Jamison Crowder to meet Patriots    Thu Mar 26, 08:23 AM

Duke WR/KR Jamison Crowder has a meeting set up with the New England Patriots within the next week.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are always looking to upgrade their wide receivers and could use some help returning kicks as well.

Patriots | Ryan Wendell recovering from surgery    Sun Mar 22, 10:38 AM

New England Patriots C Ryan Wendell (shoulder) is believed to have underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason and is currently recovering from the surgery.

Footballguys view: Wendell is expected to be ready for training camp. He can line up at center or guard and grades out as an overall average player.

Patriots | Chris Jones undergoes surgery    Sun Mar 22, 10:34 AM

New England Patriots DT Chris D. Jones (calf) recently underwent surgery on his calf. The surgery was considered minor.

Footballguys view: Jones is a rotational player who can line up inside. We're not expecting much from him when healthy.

Patriots | Robert McClain signing    Wed Mar 18, 02:33 PM

Free-agent CB Robert McClain (Falcons) announced on Twitter that he is signing an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: The Patriots continue to rebuild their secondary here after losing both Brandon Browner and Darrelle Revis in free agency. McClain has worked well as a nickel corner for the Falcons, but in New England he'll be able to compete for a starting job on the outside. He also brings special teams experience to the Patriots.

Patriots | Bradley Fletcher agrees with Pats    Wed Mar 18, 10:52 AM

Updating an earlier report, free-agent CB Bradley Fletcher (Eagles) agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 18. The deal is worth a maximum of $2.5 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have some serious work to do in their secondary after losing both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner in free agency. Fletcher was targeted often by opponents during his time with the Eagles. He's got a nose for the ball, but he'll gamble to take chances--and he'll get burned. He'll compete for a starting job with the Patriots.

Patriots | Travaris Cadet signs with Patriots    Tue Mar 17, 05:33 PM

Free-agent RB Travaris Cadet (Saints) has signed with the New England Patriots. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Patriots | Terence Newman to visit    Tue Mar 17, 02:38 PM

Free-agent CB Terence Newman (Bengals) is scheduled to visit with the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 17.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need to rebuild their secondary after the departure of both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Newman could be a short-term answer. The veteran corner has started 174 career games, and he was a starter last year in Cincinnati. He has been considering retirement, but some team may decide to make an offer for veteran depth.

Patriots | Reggie Bush meeting with Pats    Fri Mar 13, 02:10 PM

Free-agent RB Reggie Bush (Lions) is scheduled to meet with the New England Patriots Friday, March 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bush isn't a full-time back, but he can be dangerous as a part-time player. The Patriots could use him in a Kevin Faulk role on offense, he could be good as a receiving back for the team.

Patriots | Scott Chandler joins the Patriots    Fri Mar 13, 01:20 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Scott Chandler (Bills) has reached an agreement with the New England Patriots Friday, March 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Chandler gives them depth at the tight end position. He could be an occassional red-zone target for Tom Brady.

Patriots | Sign Jonathan Freeny    Thu Mar 12, 05:28 PM

Free-agent LB Jonathan Freeny (Dolphins) signed an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: Jonathan Freeny was a restricted free agent who didn't get tendered which means the Patriots don't have to pay a penalty for him. He has played in 42 games but has never started and he has just 42 tackles in his career.

Patriots | Danny Amendola has contract reworked    Thu Mar 12, 12:40 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola had his contract reworked Thursday, March 12. The deal is for three years and $12.75 million. Amendola can make up to $15 million in total.

Footballguys view: Amendola was supposed to be the team's replacement for losing Wes Welker to the Broncos a couple of years ago in free agency. Instead, Julian Edelman has emerged as that player and Amendola has struggled to stay healthy.

Patriots | Chimdi Chekwa signs one-year deal    Wed Mar 11, 10:09 PM

The New England Patriots signed free-agent CB Chimdi Chekwa (Raiders) to a one-year deal Wednesday, March 11, a league source said.

Footballguys view: Hey! They have a corner ladies and gentlemen! After Darrelle Revis (Jets) and Brandon Browner (Saints) moved on in free agency this year, the Patriots needed to do something at the position. Chekwa has good upside, but he's got limited experience because injuries have set back his pro career. We'll see if he can stay healthy and impress with the Patriots.

Patriots | Jabaal Sheard signs    Wed Mar 11, 06:50 PM

Free-agent LB Jabaal Sheard (Browns) has agreed to a two-year deal worth $11 million, with a $4 million bonus.

Footballguys view: The Patriots will look to replace Darrelle Revis's lost impact not just through bolstering the secondary. Sheard can help provide more pass rush and he's versatile enough to put his hand on the ground and stand up if necessary.

Patriots | Colin McCarthy visits    Tue Mar 10, 09:59 PM

Free-agent LB Colin McCarthy (Titans) visited the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 10, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McCarthy, a 2011 fourth-round pick of the Titans, spent the 2014 season on injured reserve due to a shoulder injury. He started off his pro career well, but injuries have severely limited his playing time over the last few years. The Patriots are looking for linebacker depth here, and they're willing to take a chance on an injury-prone player with good upside.

Patriots | Brandon Gibson signing    Tue Mar 10, 06:55 PM

Free-agent WR Brandon Gibson (Dolphins) is signing a one-year deal with the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 10, according to sources. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: A 2013 patellar tendon tear has taken away a lot of Gibson's natural talent. If healthy, Gibson is able to snare in passes with his large wingspan and he does a good job of boxing out smaller defenders. He's not a lock to make the Patriots final roster in 2015.

Patriots | C.J. Spiller may be option for Pats    Tue Mar 10, 06:05 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) has received interest from the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Spiller could fill the role vacated by Shane Vereen. He may not get the size of workload he's hoping for, but Spiller would be on a team that would be in contention for another Super Bowl run in 2015.

Patriots | Pats likely landing spot for Percy Harvin?    Tue Mar 10, 05:42 PM

Free-agent WR Percy Harvin (Jets) could have a likely landing spot in the New England Patriots, according to sources.

Footballguys view: You could see this one coming from a mile away. Harvin played in the Florida offense under Urban Meyer, a close personal friend of Pats coach Bill Belichick.

Patriots | Reggie Bush eyeing New England?    Tue Mar 10, 03:50 PM

Free-agent RB Reggie Bush (Lions) has chosen the New England Patriots as one of his next possible teams, according to a source. The New Orleans Saints and San Francisco 49ers are also being considered.

Footballguys view: The Patriots would be able to find a spot for a weapon like Bush. He's not built to be a lead back, but he could certainly fill the Shane Vereen role as a change-of-pace back.

Patriots | Darrelle Revis will hit free agency    Mon Mar 9, 03:40 PM

New England Patriots CB Darrelle Revis will become a free agent after the Patriots decided not to pick up his $20 million option.

Footballguys view: A seismic move in the NFL here. Revis automatically becomes the hottest player available at the cornerback position. When the Patriots re-signed Devin McCourty is was an indication that Revis would become available. New England is trying to move some money around so they can keep Revis, but they could easily be outbid for his services.

Patriots | Devin McCourty back with Patriots    Sun Mar 8, 10:53 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent FS Devin McCourty has agreed to a five-year, $47.5 million deal to stay with the team.

Footballguys view: A huge move for the Patriots here. McCourty was the best free safety on the open market, and he's become one of the best in the game after converting from cornerback. This move means the Pats may not be able to keep cornerback Darrelle Revis. He's due a $12.5 million option bonus on Monday.

Patriots | NE interested in C.J. Spiller    Sat Mar 7, 12:44 AM

The New England Patriots are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Footballguys view: They could be interested in Spiller as some form of replacement for Shane Vereen. The Patriots don't have much salary cap space, and that will hinder what they try to do in free agency.

Patriots | Stephen Gostkowski signs tender    Fri Mar 6, 05:48 PM

New England Patriots franchise free-agent PK Stephen Gostkowski has signed his tender offer, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The tag is worth $4.59 million, and this gives him a one-year guarantee. Gostkowski loses leverage in long-term negotiations with this move.

Patriots | NE has interest in Brian Hartline    Fri Mar 6, 07:42 AM

Free-agent WR Brian Hartline (Dolphins) has interest from the New England Patriots, but no meeting has been set up.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are still over the cap. They won't be able to make a ton of moves in free agency, but adding Hartline wouldn't take that much money. It would help his fantasy value if he latched on with the Patriots so he could catch passes from Tom Brady.

Patriots | Shane Vereen looking for $3.5 million    Fri Mar 6, 07:11 AM

Free-agent RB Shane Vereen (Patriots) is looking for a contract that will pay $3.5 million per year, not $5 million as previously thought.

Footballguys view: Keep looking buddy. Vereen is good as a part-time player, but there is a flood of running backs on the open market. We can't see Vereen getting that price tag...maybe something close...but he shouldn't be expecting a hot welcome in free agency.

Patriots | Vince Wilfork could return at lower rate    Thu Mar 5, 10:26 AM

Updating an earlier report, free-agent DT Vince Wilfork (Patriots) could return to the New England Patriots at a reduced salary, according to a source informed of the team's thinking.

Footballguys view: We'll see if that happens, but Wilfork might be a hot name now that he's a free agent. We could see a team like the Broncos interested in adding Wilfork to play nose tackle for Wade Phillips new 3-4 defense.

Patriots | Vince Wilfork let go    Thu Mar 5, 09:49 AM

New England Patriots DT Vince Wilfork announced that the Patriots will not pick up his option for the 2015 season, which makes him a free agent.

Footballguys view: The Patriots save over $8 million with this move. It's a painful move because Wilfork has been a long-time star for the Patriots, but it's a business and the team needed to free up some cap space. It will be interesting to see how much interest Wilfork generates on the open market.

Patriots | Pats watching Sammie Coates    Tue Mar 3, 05:33 PM

Auburn WR Sammie Coates was being watched intently by the New England Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick at his pro day event Tuesday, March 3. Belichick was the only NFL head coach in attendance Tuesday, and Coates is a candidate to go in the first two rounds of this year's draft. Coates did not re-test on his combine numbers Tuesday, and he just caught passes in positional drills in front of scouts.

Footballguys view: Coates is one of our favorite WRs in the 2015 NFL draft. He's got a great size/speed combination and he has the explosiveness to be a threat after the catch. Coates dropped a lot of passes in college at Auburn, and he needs to prove to teams that he's improved his concentration. New England has tried to find quality WRs through the draft, but recent draft picks like Aaron Dobson and Josh Boyce have not worked out.

Patriots | Devin McCourty could become free agent    Mon Mar 2, 04:39 PM

New England Patriots CB Devin McCourty will become a free agent if he is not signed to a long-term deal within eight days. Some expected McCourty to receive the franchise tag, but PK Stephen Gostkowski was tagged Monday, March 2, before the franchise tag deadline.

Footballguys view: McCourty can play free safety or cornerback, and he's going to be one of the hottest free agents on the open market. The Patriots would like to keep him around, but he may be out of their price range.

Patriots | Stephen Gostkowski receives tag    Mon Mar 2, 02:53 PM

New England Patriots PK Stephen Gostkowski received the franchise tag Monday, March 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This move isn't uncommon for the Patriots. They placed the franchise tag on former kicker Adam Vinatieri twice (2002, 2005) during his time in New England. As a franchise kicker, Gostkowski will be paid $4.5 million this season, which is 120 percent of his 2014 salary-cap charge. The Patriots could alter that number if they're able to sign Gostkowski to a long-term deal.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley could receive prove-it deal    Mon Mar 2, 02:03 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (knee) could be a coup for a team willing to take a chance on his recovery from anterior cruciate ligament surgery this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are ready to move on without Ridley. He'll get picked up by another team, but Ridley should not be expecting to break the bank. He's likely to receive an offer for a 'prove-it' one-year deal around the $1.25 million range with incentives.

Patriots | Shane Vereen not asking for $5 million    Fri Feb 27, 12:54 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Shane Vereen made it clear that he doesn't expect to make $5 million in 2015, as was previously reported.

Footballguys view: It's ridiculous to think that Vereen would ask for that given his track record and the current market for running backs.

Patriots | NE interested in Percy Harvin if cut    Tue Feb 24, 03:07 PM

New York Jets WR Percy Harvin will draw interest from the New England Patriots if he is released by the Jets this offseason. Harvin is unlikely to return to the Jets unless he takes less than the $10.5 million he's owed next season.

Footballguys view: Bill Belichick loves him some Florida players. Harvin was a star in college for Belichick's buddy, former Gators coach Urban Meyer. New England will be one of several teams interested in Harvin if he is let go. The Patriots tried trading for Harvin before he was traded to the Jets last year.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower has surgery    Sun Feb 22, 07:22 AM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and will be sidelined for approximately six or seven months.

Footballguys view: Hightower could be an option to begin the season on the PUP list if he is not on schedule or ahead of schedule in his recovery. He missed four games in 2014, but he still finished second on the team with six sacks.

Patriots | Charles Clay may not an option for NE?    Sat Feb 21, 01:28 PM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay may not be an option for the New England Patriots after all once free agency commences, according to Boston Herald beat reporter Jeff Howe.

Footballguys view: The Patriots also might have interest in Julius Thomas (Broncos). Clay will come for a cheaper price than Thomas, but the Patriots will have to watch what they spend. They are currently over the cap, but there will be some moves in the near future that take some of that money off the books.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley ahead of schedule    Fri Feb 20, 06:49 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (knee) is about four weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Ridley hopes to be able to return to the field in May.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Patriots and gives them some leverage in Shane Vereen's contract talks. Vereen wants too much money ($5 million a year reportedly) and if Ridley is coming back and looks good, New England has options.

Patriots | Shane Vereen hoping for $5 million    Thu Feb 19, 04:20 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Shane Vereen is expecting a contract worth at least $5 million per season, according to a source. Vereen would like to remain with the Patriots, but there have been no indications on whether the sides are close on a new deal.

Footballguys view: That's a lot of scratch for Vereen and it seems unlikely that the Patriots - who aren't all that free with their money as a general rule - will pay him that. If he won't budge off that money, expect Vereen to be elsewhere next season.
