Patriots | Expected to pick up Nate Solder's option    Sun Apr 20, 08:49 PM

The New England Patriots are expected to pick up the fifth-year option in OT Nate Solder's contract before the May 3 deadline.

Footballguys view: Solder has done a good job protecting Tom Brady's blindside. He'll be locked into that spot for the foreseeable future.

Patriots | Visit with Marqise Lee    Fri Apr 18, 03:03 PM

The New England Patriots visited with Southern California WR Marqise Lee this week.

Footballguys view: Lee is a precise route-runner who is pro ready. He is quick in and out of his breaks, and he'll create separation at the top of the route tree. Lee does have to stop body catching so many passes. He'll secure the pass, but it won't be as cleanly because he doesn't regularly snare them with his hands.

Patriots | Interested in Andre Williams    Fri Apr 18, 09:33 AM

The New England Patriots are interested in Boston College RB Andre Williams.

Footballguys view: Williams is a big back with a little wiggle and build-up speed at the second level. He runs too upright which makes him an even larger target for defenders to tackle. With 10 receptions during his college career, Williams is pretty much a non-factor in the passing game. The two-down thumper is currently graded as a third-round pick. The Patriots lost LeGarrette Blount in free agency, and they are looking for another back to add to the mix.

Patriots | Teammate says Sebastian Vollmer doing good    Thu Apr 17, 08:34 PM

New England Patriots OG Logan Mankins said OT Sebastian Vollmer (leg) has looked good this offseason while he recovers from the broken leg he suffered during the 2013 season.

Footballguys view: The Patriots could use Vollmer at 100 percent this season and while this isn't an official team report, it's good news nonetheless.

Patriots | Visit with Jimmy Garoppolo     Wed Apr 16, 04:20 PM

The New England Patriots visited with Eastern Illinois QB Jimmy Garoppolo earlier this week.

Footballguys view: We're cooler than most on Garoppolo. He's got a quick release, but his offense (against poor competition) was incredibly simple. At Eastern Illinois he was asked to basically catch the snap and throw immediately to a predetermined target. If the Patriots added him it would be interesting to say the least. Wherever he goes, Garoppolo needs to sit and learn.

Patriots | C.J. Fiedorowicz to visit    Wed Apr 16, 01:07 PM

The New England Patriots are scheduled to meet with Iowa TE C.J. Fiedorowicz Wednesday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Fiedorowicz is a huge target, measuring in at 6'7" and he knows how to use his big body to keep the ball away from smaller defenders. He's not much of a threat after the catch, but does make for a good red-zone target because of his size. The Patriots are looking for more tight end help opposite Rob Gronkowski. Fiedorowicz is considered a third-round pick.

Patriots | Host Solomon Patton    Tue Apr 15, 11:54 PM

The New England Patriots had University of Florida WR Solomon Patton in for a pre-draft visit this week.

Footballguys view: Patton would be a good fit for the Patriots. He's ultra quick, and Patton is very dangerous after the catch. While not the biggest wide receiver, he's not afraid to catch passes over the middle in traffic. He's a late-round pick worth keeping an eye on.

Patriots | Worked out Weston Richburg    Tue Apr 15, 03:26 PM

The New England Patriots held a private workout last week for Colorado State OG Weston Richburg. He's projected to be taken early in the second round of this year's draft.

Footballguys view: Richburg is arguably the best center prospect in this draft class, and many in the scouting community compare him to former Colts great Jeff Saturday. He can move well in space, and Richburg can be a sticky blocker at the second level. Many scouts feel he can be a 10-year starter at the position. Richburg controlled all the line calls in college, and he's comfortable working with a quarterback who calls many audibles.

Patriots | Dustin Keller could be option    Mon Apr 14, 03:36 PM

The New England Patriots could show interest in free-agent TE Dustin Keller (Dolphins) at some point this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need to find additional tight end help. Keller could be a decent addition if healthy. With his durability concerns we're likely to see Keller signed to a one-year deal that is incentive laden.

Patriots | Interested in Logan Thomas    Sat Apr 12, 11:13 AM

The New England Patriots have met with or worked out Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas this offseason.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a mid- or late-round quarterback with a raw skill set. He's big, has a strong arm and he can keep plays alive with his feet. Thomas is not accurate and needs to work on his decision making from the pocket. The upside has always been there with Thomas, but he didn't really develop as a collegian and he didn't play up to his potential. The Patriots need a quarterback to develop, especially if they lose Ryan Mallett after this season.

Patriots | Interested in Aaron Murray    Sat Apr 12, 10:12 AM

The New England Patriots have asked to have either a private workout or a team visit with University of Georgia QB Aaron Murray.

Footballguys view: There's a lot to like about Murray. He's an accurate quarterback who is known as a tough leader. Murray is short, but lacks the athleticism of Russell Wilson or Drew Brees. His arm isn't incredibly strong, and he'll struggle to throw deep when he can't set his feet. Murray would give the Patriots a developmental quarterback. They may lose Ryan Mallett after this season, and they need to groom someone to eventually take over for Tom Brady.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski meets with doctor    Fri Apr 11, 08:38 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) met with Dr. James Andrews this week to have his to have his surgically repaired knee examined.

Patriots | Zach Mettenberger meeting with team    Tue Apr 8, 05:56 PM

Louisiana State QB Zach Mettenberger is scheduled to meet with the New England Patriots Tuesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Ryan Mallett may leave New England after this season. It's the final year of his contract, and he may want to try to go elsewhere to have a realistic shot at a starting job. Grabbing Mettenberger in the second round would be a good idea for the Patriots. They need to groom the next starting quarterback in order to be ready when Tom Brady is done.

Patriots | Budgeting for Tom Brady successor    Mon Apr 7, 02:27 AM

The New England Patriots have restructured their salary cap to allow for QB Tom Brady's successor to be brought aboard. The team will likely add a third quarterback to its roster as insurance in case QB Ryan Mallett leaves after this season.

Footballguys view: The Patriots could lose Mallett after this season. The big pocket passer may be able to fetch the Patriots a late-round pick if he's traded this season. We'll see if the team adds a quarterback with a higher-than-expected pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Patriots | Interest in Brandin Cooks    Fri Apr 4, 07:48 PM

Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks said he has received interest from the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: The Patriots added two wide receivers last year in the draft (Aaron Dobson, Josh Boyce), but could go back to the well this year. Cooks would be a fine pick for them in the first round at 29th overall. He's fast, can gain separation with ease and is dangerous after the catch.

Patriots | Stephon Tuitt visits    Thu Apr 3, 11:07 PM

Notre Dame DE Stephon Tuitt was scheduled to meet with the New England Patriots Thursday, April 3.

Footballguys view: Tuitt is a disruptive player who can play inside at tackle or outside at end. He has violent striking hands, plays with a quick first step and can create pressure in one-on-one situations.

Patriots | Re-signing Patrick Chung    Thu Apr 3, 01:30 PM

The New England Patriots will re-sign SS Patrick Chung (Eagles). Terms of the contract have not been disclosed.

Footballguys view: There's no guarantee he'll make the starting day roster, and no bet that this go-round with the Pats will be better than the last one. He lasted just one year in Philly, so our confidence isn't high.

Patriots | Maurice Jones-Drew considered team as finalist    Wed Apr 2, 01:20 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew said the New England Patriots were one of the finalists to sign him, but he decided to sign with the Raiders.

Footballguys view: Even though the Patriots lost LeGarrette Blount (Steelers) in free agency, they have a jam-packed backfield. Jones-Drew would have been in the mix for playing time with guys like Stevan Ridley and Shane Vereen.

Patriots | Teddy Bridgewater to visit    Wed Apr 2, 12:06 AM

Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater will visit with the New England Patriots Wednesday, April 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater may fall in the first round of the draft, but he's unlikely to reach the Patriots at 29th overall. The team is just doing their due diligence by meeting with all the top quarterbacks in this draft class.

Patriots | Met with Blake Bortles    Tue Apr 1, 07:44 PM

The New England Patriots met with Central Florida QB Blake Bortles last week.

Footballguys view: Bortles may be the favorite to be the number one overall pick to the Texans. The Patriots are just doing their due diligence as Bortles should be long gone by the time they pick at 29th overall.

Patriots | To visit with Johnny Manziel    Tue Apr 1, 07:26 PM

The New England Patriots will visit with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel Wednesday, April 2, according to a source. Manziel is in the New England area Tuesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: Manziel is likely to be a top 10 pick in the 2014 NFL draft. If the Patriots want to add him they'd have to move up from 29th overall.

Patriots | Michael Bush to visit    Mon Mar 31, 11:03 PM

According to a source, free-agent RB Michael Bush (Bears) is set to visit with the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: With LeGarrette Blount (Steelers) moving on in free agency, the Patriots are in need of another running back. Bush has a good all-purpose skill set and would fit in nicely as a reserve player in New England.

Patriots | Mark Harrison could be used at TE    Mon Mar 31, 05:31 PM

The New England Patriots could consider moving WR Mark Harrison to tight end this offseason.

Footballguys view: Harrison has the size to make the transition. He does a good job of hauling in contested passes, and Harrison knows how to use his size to box out smaller defenders.
