Patriots | Jonathan Jones may be No. 3 CB    Sat Aug 18, 01:00 PM

New England Patriots CB Jonathan Jones (foot) likely will be the leading candidate for the No. 3 cornerback job once he is cleared to play, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Patriots | Eric Rowe in line to start    Sat Aug 18, 12:48 PM

New England Patriots CB Eric Rowe appears to be locked in as the starting cornerback opposite CB Stephon Gilmore, in the opinion ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Patriots | LaAdrian Waddle to be swing tackle    Fri Aug 17, 06:36 PM

New England Patriots OT LaAdrian Waddle likely will be the swing tackle for the Patriots this season because of the season-ending injury to OT Isaiah Wynn (Achilles').

Footballguys view: Waddle at one time was a pleasant surprise on the Lions roster, but the Patriots have to hope they don't need to use him heavily this year.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn's season could be over    Fri Aug 17, 11:12 AM

New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn (Achilles') has a torn Achilles', according to a source. The team lists it as an ankle injury, but the Achilles' would end his season.

Footballguys view: Wynn was at least going to be key depth at guard and tackle who could be clutch if the team suffered an in-game injury or long term loss on the line. Trent Brown and Marcus Cannon staying healthy is very important for the Patriots offense this year.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead has slight tear in knee    Fri Aug 17, 01:40 AM

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (knee) is reportedly dealing with a slight tear in his knee, but it has been deemed a minor injury and something he will be able to play through, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Any sprain is technically a tear, so it isn't as bad as it sounds if this is a low grade MCL tear. If it's cartilage then it could be a situation that has to be managed all year. Either way, with his performance last night and the state of the backfield, James White's value is going up.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn hurt Thursday    Fri Aug 17, 01:10 AM

New England Patriots OL Isaiah Wynn (ankle) was carted off the field after having his left ankle examined in the medical tent during a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Thursday, Aug. 16.

Patriots | Five grabs for Chris Hogan    Thu Aug 16, 10:26 PM

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan caught five passes on seven targets for 25 yards and a touchdown against the Philadelphia Eagles in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: Hogan's yards per catch won't blow anyone away, but a high volume of targets from the slot to open the season with the backfield banged up could easily be in his future. His ADP should go up after this performance.

Patriots | Tom Brady tosses two scores    Thu Aug 16, 10:00 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 19 of his 26 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns against the Philadelphia Eagles in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 16.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn carted off Thursday    Thu Aug 16, 08:57 PM

Patriots | Rex Burkhead has minor injury    Thu Aug 16, 08:36 PM

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) is dealing with a minor injury but could have played in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16, if it was a regular season game, according to a source.

Patriots | Braxton Berrios trending up    Thu Aug 16, 07:53 PM

New England Patriots WR Braxton Berrios has outperformed WR Riley McCarron in 'recent practices,' according to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald, who also believes 'both have a ways to go.'

Footballguys view: McCarron was reportedly ahead earlier, but perhaps the larger message here is that neither of them could come close to filling Julian Edelman's role in the slot and the veteran wide receivers on the Patriots will be the ones picking up the slack while Edelman is suspended.

Patriots | Kenny Britt remains injured    Thu Aug 16, 07:25 PM

New England Patriots WR Kenny Britt (hamstring) is still recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered on June 5. He hasn't taken any reps in one-on-one or team drills.

Footballguys view: Britt hasn't lived up to his original billing, not consistently and we aren't expecting that to change. Britt isn't really worth rostering at this point and unless someone gets hurt we aren't expecting a change in that.

Patriots | Chris Hogan begins extension talks    Thu Aug 16, 03:21 PM

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan has started contract extension talks with the Patriots, but the two sides are a bit too far apart at this time, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Monmouth's pride and joy has played well enough for a little money from the club. His health needs to be consistent, but we don't think the offense will shift so far away from him that his ADP as 29th receiver off the board is out of line.

Patriots | Tom Brady likely to play    Thu Aug 16, 10:51 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (back) is expected to play deep into the first half of the second preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting move, given we all know what Brady can do, and we all know how critical he is to the success of the team. Does this mean we won't see him much -- if at all -- in the third preseason game. Bill Belichick and the Patriots always zig when everyone else zags, so it's hard to know what to read into this, if anything. Brady is going off the board at 3 in many drafts right now, and you won't have to watch him in a preseason game to know he's worth the price tag.

Patriots | Several Pats likely to sit    Thu Aug 16, 10:33 AM

New England Patriots WR Kenny Britt (hamstring), RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed), RB Sony Michel (knee), WR Matthew Slater (undisclosed), OT Marcus Cannon (undisclosed), CB Duke Dawson (undisclosed), DE Trey Flowers (undisclosed) and CB Ryan Lewis (undisclosed) are likely to sit out of the second preseason game.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are not ones to risk injury to guys just to see them go. Sony Michel would be one guy we'd like to see but with the knee injury and a small procedure ending his preseason, we'll have to draft on blind faith. Which is to say, probably not at his current ADP of 25th back taken.

Patriots | Phillip Dorsett leaves practice    Tue Aug 14, 04:22 PM

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett (undisclosed) left practice early Tuesday, Aug. 14, after slipping.

Footballguys view: He walked off the field under his own power and the issue did not appear to be serious. Dorsett has a chance to carve out a larger role than some think in the Patriots offense. Fantasy GMs are not selecting Dorsett in most 12-team PPR leagues, so keep him on your waiver wire speed dial. If he plays well in the preseason then perhaps taking a flier on him in the late rounds is something you should consider.

Patriots | Eric Decker's hands in question    Tue Aug 14, 09:36 AM

New England Patriots WR Eric Decker dropped the first pass QB Tom Brady threw him last week, dropped two more Sunday, Aug. 12, and three more Monday, Aug. 13. After his drops, Decker appeared to run the wrong route when Brady first targeted him in 11-on-11s. He ended practice with four catches in a row, however.

Footballguys view: There was some hope that Decker could fill the big slot role when he was signed, but it sounds like he's not even a sure thing to make the team right now.

Patriots | Marcus Cannon should be ready for opener    Mon Aug 13, 01:53 PM

Patriots | Sony Michel still out    Mon Aug 13, 11:56 AM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) is out of practice Monday, Aug. 13.

Footballguys view: Michel left the field with a trainer way back on Tuesday, August 1st. His status for the start of the regular season is unknown. We don't expect to see the rookie from Georgia in the preseason.

Patriots | Jeremy Hill top RB Sunday    Sun Aug 12, 06:48 PM

New England Patriots RB Jeremy Hill served as the top running back during practice Sunday, Aug. 12, with RBs Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) and Sony Michel (knee) sidelined.

Footballguys view: Hill is becoming a possible late-round sleeper now that he's running ahead of Mike Gillislee and two of the Patriots top three backs are hurt. Hill has also been contributing on special teams and appears to be in line for a roster spot.

Patriots | Trent Brown remains starter at left tackle    Sun Aug 12, 10:07 AM

New England Patriots OT Trent Brown started at left tackle against the Washington Redskins in their preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 9. OT Isaiah Wynn is believed to be second on the depth chart at the position, although he did not play in the game for unknown reasons. Brown was replaced in the game by OT Matt Tobin.

Patriots | Jason McCourty may be on bubble    Sat Aug 11, 12:43 PM

New England Patriots CB Jason McCourty has been working with the second-team defense during training camp and could be on the roster bubble because he has seen limited time on special teams, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Patriots | Jacob Hollister may have bigger role    Sat Aug 11, 12:31 PM

New England Patriots TE Jacob Hollister is in line for a bigger offensive role this season, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. He played only 87 offensive snaps last season.

Footballguys view: Dynasty GMs need to keep this in mind. We loved Hollister's game in college at Wyoming and he spent last year just learning behind Rob Gronkowski. Hollister plays like a wide receiver and can create mismatches when he steps onto the field with his speed, athleticism and sure hands.

Patriots | Harvey Langi to miss several weeks    Fri Aug 10, 05:28 PM

New England Patriots LB Harvey Langi (side) is expected to be sidelined for at least four to five weeks because of an internal laceration, according to a source. The team is concerned about Langi's kidney.

Patriots | Ralph Webb scores 16 points    Fri Aug 10, 02:29 AM

New England Patriots RB Ralph Webb gained 46 yards on 14 carries and scored two touchdowns against the Washington Redskins on Thursday, Aug. 9. He also added a pair of two-point conversions.

Footballguys view: Webb appears to be ticketed for a practice squad spot, but don't forget about him in deep dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Jeremy Hill strengthens roster bid    Fri Aug 10, 02:17 AM

New England Patriots RB Jeremy Hill carried 11 times for 51 yards and a touchdown on Thursday, Aug. 9, against the Washington Redskins. Hill added two receptions for 14 yards.

Footballguys view: Hill contributed on special teams, which should help his chances to make the team. He could have the Mike Gillislee 2017 role if he beats out Gillislee and Sony Michel isn't ready for Week 1 against Houston. Put him on your late round flier list.

Patriots | Tom Brady bothered by back    Fri Aug 10, 02:07 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (back) did not play Thursday, Aug. 9, because of a sore back.

Footballguys view: Brady has played through injuries for a good part of his career. Unless we don't see him in the preseason, this is no reason to dim his outlook.

Patriots | Danny Etling may be on bubble    Wed Aug 8, 07:10 PM

New England Patriots QB Danny Etling has impressed with his arm strength, leadership and commitment during training camp but is on the roster bubble because he has been inconsistent at times during practices.

Footballguys view: Etling, the rookie from LSU, could be seen as a developmental quarterback. A seventh-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Etling has good size and gets rid of the ball quickly. He needs to play with better composure under pressure if he's ever going to make anything of himself at the pro level.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn mostly at OT    Wed Aug 8, 07:03 PM

New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn has been receiving most of his snaps at offensive tackle during training camp but has also worked at left guard at times. He likely will be active on game days during the regular season if he does not win a starting job.

New England Patriots LB Harvey Langi (chest) has missed the last two practices because of a chest injury he suffered during a practice.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead might be nicked up    Wed Aug 8, 05:51 PM

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead (undisclosed) headed to the team's lower field at practice Wednesday, Aug. 8, a field usually reserved for those rehabbing injuries.

Footballguys view: Burkhead is in line to be the lead back for the Patriots in 2018. He'll work in a RBBC just like most all Patriots backs do, but his role should have the most fantasy value. Burkhead currently has an ADP of RB29 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Bashaud Breeland leaves without deal    Tue Aug 7, 04:31 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent CB Bashaud Breeland (Redskins) left his visit with the New England Patriots without a contract but was told that the Patriots will be in touch.

Footballguys view: Breeland has met with several teams since March. He was signed to the Panthers this offseason but had the deal fall through due to a failed physical. As the season gets closer, the chances of Breeland finding a new team increases. He's too good to be out on the street for much longer, but the price tag is going to have to be correct.

Patriots | Kenny Britt limited    Tue Aug 7, 04:30 PM

New England Patriots WR Kenny Britt (hamstring) was limited during practice Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Footballguys view: Britt has been limited by this hamstring all of camp. With the signing of Eric Decker, it just adds more veteran competition to the mix at the WR position. At this point, Britt is going to be hard pressed to make the Patriots 53-man roster.

Patriots | Three DBs back at practice    Tue Aug 7, 04:10 PM

New England Patriots CB Cyrus Jones (knee), CB Jonathan Jones (foot) and FS Nate Ebner (undisclosed) participated in practice Tuesday, Aug. 7. All three players started training camp on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list.

Patriots | Bashaud Breeland works out for Pats    Tue Aug 7, 03:50 PM

Free-agent CB Bashaud Breeland (Redskins) worked out for the New England Patriots Tuesday, Aug. 7, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Breeland has been making a tour around the NFL as he continues to look for work. He had a three-year, $24 million deal with the Panthers fall through due to a failed physical resulting from a foot injury he suffered on vacation this offseason. That fell through back in March and Breeland has been looking for a new team since then. If healthy, Breeland is capable of being a quality second or third corner.

Patriots | Phillip Dorsett having 'notable' camp so far    Tue Aug 7, 02:52 AM

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett has been one of the 'notable performers' through the first 10 practices, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.com. At times, he's also been breaking off to a second field with QB Tom Brady and 'a few others.'

Footballguys view: Dorsett has lined up inside at times, and he can also fill the void left by Brandin Cooks in the deep passing game. He, Cordarrelle Patterson, Kenny Britt, and Eric Decker are competing for a fantasy relevant WR2 role in the Patriots offense while Julian Edelman is suspended. All are potential last round picks or Week 2 waiver wire wonders.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell let go    Mon Aug 6, 01:56 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell was released Monday, Aug. 6, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft coming out of Georgia, Mitchell played in only 14 games in two seasons. He has a history of knee problems dating back to his college days, but Mitchell has the speed to stretch the field. If healthy and able to pass a physical perhaps some other team will take a chance on him.

Patriots | Eric Decker a potential starter?    Sun Aug 5, 09:17 PM

New England Patriots WR Eric Decker and WR Malcolm Mitchell are both listed as the backups to WR Julian Edelman on the first depth chart released Sunday. Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Decker should be in line to start at the beginning of the year when Edelman is suspended. That's going to be a fantasy relevant position/situation for whoever that guy is. If it's Decker, we could see him produce like a solid flex play for Fantasy GMs during that time.

Patriots | New England releases first depth chart    Sun Aug 5, 03:46 PM

New England Patriots RB Rex Burkhead appeared ahead of Sony Michel on the team's first depth chart release Sunday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Michel isn't going to play much, if at all this preseason, which could make it hard for him to have an early season impact. Look for Burkhead's ADP to jump into the fourth or fifth round very soon.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell still not participating    Sat Aug 4, 09:25 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) attended training camp but did not participate in team drills Saturday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: Mitchell still has a chance to make the roster and even have a big role in the offense after bad news about his knee to open camp, but he'll have to sustain participation in practice and the preseason to deliver.

Patriots | Sony Michel out at least 10 days    Sat Aug 4, 04:40 PM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) had fluid drained from his knee and will be sidelined for at least 10 days. People close to the situation do not appear to be concerned about Michel's availability for the regular season.

Footballguys view: Michel should be ready to go for Week 1, but this is a bit of a setback for the rookie. He was struggling a bit through camp up to this point, so Rex Burkhead's spot as the top back for the Patriots seems to be safe...at least in the early part of the season.

Patriots | Sony Michel will need procedure on knee    Sat Aug 4, 04:22 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) will need to undergo a procedure on his knee that is expected to keep him sidelined for the preseason and possibly into the regular season, according to sources.

Footballguys view: New reports now indicate that Michel could be ready for the start of the regular season. Keep an eye on the talented rookie's status as camp goes on without him.
