Patriots | LeGarrette Blount wearing down defenses    Sat Sep 24, 09:05 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount ran 15 times for 92 yards and a touchdown in the second half against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 and 17 times for 94 yards and two touchdowns in the second half against the Houston Texans in Week 3.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo could play in Week 4    Fri Sep 23, 11:49 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) has a chance to play against the Buffalo Bills in Week 4, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We'll know more about this QB situation later in the week. Both Garoppolo and rookie Jacoby Brissett (thumb) are banged up and Tom Brady still has one more game on his suspension.

Patriots | Jacoby Brissett likely needs thumb surgery    Fri Sep 23, 02:41 PM

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett (thumb) tore a right thumb ligament in the second half of his Week 3 outing Thursday, September 22, against the Houston Texans. He'll 'likely' need surgery for stabilization.

Footballguys view: It's hard to say whether Jimmy Garoppolo will be ready, but the team could actually go with Julian Edelman at quarterback if he isn't. At least one other report says Brissett won't need surgery and is fine, so we shouldn't take Brissett out of the Week 4 lineup yet.

Patriots | Jacoby Brissett uses his legs in win    Fri Sep 23, 12:26 AM

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett completed 11 of his 19 passes for 103 yards and ran eight times for 48 yards and a touchdown in a 27-0 win over the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 28.

Footballguys view: Brissett did a good job makeing safe decisions and the Patriots installed some "college" run looks to capitalize on his athleticism. They are in good hands next week if they have to start Brissett against the floundering Bills.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount scores a pair    Fri Sep 23, 12:15 AM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount had 24 carries for 105 yards and two touchdowns in a 27-0 win over the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 22.

Footballguys view: Blount has been a beast for the Patriots as they have been churning through backup quarterbacks while Tom Brady has been sidelined. Brady's return in two weeks will probably create more scoring drives even if it reduces the need to lean on Blount. He's a bonafide RB1 until Dion Lewis back and maybe even after.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski quiet in debut    Fri Sep 23, 12:07 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) played 14 snaps in his season debut Thursday, Sept. 22, finishing without a catch in a 27-0 win over the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski was able to knock off the rust, but he clearly was not 100%. Even if he can start next week against Buffalo, he'll be a dicey play unless Jimmy Garoppolo can return to action. Once Tom Brady is back in Week 5, Gronkowski should be a full go as the TE1 in fantasy football once again.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski suiting up Thursday    Thu Sep 22, 07:59 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is officially active for the team's Week 3 game Thursday, September 22, against the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: We don't know that Gronkowski will see a lot of work, but it's good he's out there. Even if Gronkowski is out there just for a few plays, he's still a danger to score.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski will play Thursday    Thu Sep 22, 05:20 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) will take the field against the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 22. It will be his first action of the 2016 season.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is likely to see limited action Thursday night, especially if the Pats take a big lead. That said, it's good to see him out there and he is always a threat to score even in limited use.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo not expected to dress    Thu Sep 22, 12:32 PM

Contrary to a previous report, New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) is not expected to dress for the Week 3 game against the Houston Texans, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We're not shocked, as he has a Grade 2 AC joint injury and that often lays someone out for 2-4 weeks. That makes Julian Edelman Jacoby Brissett's backup. We still assume that we will see a lot of LeGarrette Blount Thursday night. Blount is a clear RB1 this Thursday, and we're leery of everyone else.

Patriots | Jacoby Brissett to start    Thu Sep 22, 10:50 AM

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett will start Thursday, Sept. 22, against the Houston Texans. QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) will dress as his backup.

Footballguys view: We kind of figured. If Bill Belichick is smart - and we know he is - he will try to minimize Brissett's workload with a healthy dose of LeGarrette Blount. That's not great news for guys like Julian Edelman, who will see a bit of a hit in his workload. We look at him as a WR5 - though if Brissett goes down, Edelman is the backup. We probably don't need to remind you to avoid Brissett.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski plans to play     Thu Sep 22, 10:24 AM

Updating an earlier report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) has told teammates all week that he plans to play Thursday, Sept. 22, against the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: He may not have a ton to do, as the Patriots will probably minimize Jacoby Brissett's workload. They'll still hit Gronkowski enough to have him as a decent TE1, but in daily games, he might be too pricey for what you get.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski will be game-time call    Thu Sep 22, 08:16 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) will be a game-time decision Thursday, Sept. 22, in Week 3.

Footballguys view: We suggest going another direction if you can. A very conservative gameplan is going to tamp down his numbers. It's hard to sit Gronkowski though, because he's always a threat. If you play him, make sure your expectations are reasonable and have an alternative in case he is a late scratch.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo doubtful for Thursday    Wed Sep 21, 05:15 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21, and listed as doubtful for the Week 3 game against the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 22.

Footballguys view: We could see Garoppolo shut down as he continues to deal with this shoulder injury. Rookie Jacoby Brissett will likely start against a tough Texans defense. WR Julian Edelman (a college QB) will serve as the emergency QB.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski listed as questionable    Wed Sep 21, 05:09 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 21, and he is listed as questionable for the Week 3 game against the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 22.

Footballguys view: Getting Gronkowski back will help the Patriots offense -- especially with rookie QB Jacoby Brissett likely starting. We may not know if Gronkowski is going to start until right up before game time.

Patriots | Julian Edelman prepping as backup QB    Wed Sep 21, 09:38 AM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman has done extensive work the last few days to prepare to be the backup quarterback.

Footballguys view: Edelman was a college QB, so this makes a lot of sense. The Texans will be prepared for this as their head coach Bill O'Brien used to be an assistant (and offensive cooridnator) on the Patriots offense.

Patriots | Two quarterbacks work out for Pats    Tue Sep 20, 07:24 PM

Free-agent QBs T.J. Yates (Texans) and Sean Renfree (Falcons) worked out for the New England Patriots Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Footballguys view: Neither one signed a deal with the Pats. This is a sign they're comfortable with a Jimmy Garoppolo/Jacoby Brissett combination on Thursday night against a tough Texans defense. There are some who think Garoppolo could start in Week 3.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited again    Tue Sep 20, 06:54 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited in practice Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Footballguys view: It's a short week for the Patriots as they play the Texans on Thursday night. Gronk could be ready for that game, but fantasy owners should just have another option. Not only is the superstar TE banged up (damn you Madden!), but the Patriots may be starting rookie Jacoby Brissett at QB.

Patriots | No practice for Jimmy Garoppolo    Tue Sep 20, 04:51 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) did not practice Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Footballguys view: The Patriots aren't counting him out, so we won't either. However, we think it would be borderline miraculous (like making a good Superman movie) if Garoppolo plays on Thursday night against the Texans.

  Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo a game-time decision?    Tue Sep 20, 02:33 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) could be a game-time decision against the Houston Texans Thursday, Sept. 23, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: That would be pretty miraculous if Garoppolo plays after only a few days of rest. The team would turn to rookie Jacoby Brissett if Garoppolo can't play. We like Brissett's dynasty league outlook, but he should struggle in his first start (if he starts) against a tough Texans defense on a short week.

Patriots | Still hope for Jimmy Garoppolo    Tue Sep 20, 08:35 AM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) could still wind up starting Week 3 if he can tolerate the pain Thursday, Sept. 22, against the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: If Garoppolo can't go, then rookie Jacoby Brissett would start on Thursday night. On a short week, with what was initially reported as a multi-week injury, we can't see Garoppolo making it out there to play. Never say never, but it seems like a stretch. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo out for Week 3    Mon Sep 19, 08:54 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) will miss the Week 3 game Thursday, Sept. 22, but there is hope he can return for Week 4.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have a short week as they face the Texans on Thursday Night Football in Week 3. Without Garoppolo, the team should start rookie QB Jacoby Brissett. After that, they'll have 10 days to watch/monitor Garoppolo to see if he can play. Initial reports had Garoppolo out around six weeks.

Updating an ongoing story, New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) could miss six weeks based on the early indications, according to a source. Garoppolo is still undergoing tests in the shoulder.

Footballguys view: Jacoby Brissett will get two starts before Tom Brady returns, that is as long as he can survive the Texans defense on Thursday.

Patriots | Danny Amendola scores twice    Sun Sep 18, 05:08 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola caught four passes for 50 yards and two touchdowns against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.

Footballguys view: Amendola played a bigger role with Rob Gronkowski out and converted when the Patriots got on the Dolphins side of the field. He's not going to be worth picking up because the Patriots pass offense will be muted for at least the next week or two until Tom Brady returns, but Amendola is showing he can still play and the Patriots pass offense is showing they can still put up a lot of points very easily.

Patriots | Julian Edelman has solid outing    Sun Sep 18, 05:05 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman caught seven passes for 76 yards against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.

Footballguys view: Edelman did almost all of his damage in the first half. He will be tough to trust against the Texans with Jacoby Brissett in Thursday night, but consider him a borderline WR1 again once Tom Brady is back.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett a factor in passing game    Sun Sep 18, 05:01 PM

New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett caught five passes for 114 yards and one touchdown against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.

Footballguys view: Bennett got multiple big gains downfield and came alive as the return of Nate Solder helped free him up to run more long runs. He's not going to be worth playing Thursday night against Houston with Jacoby Brissett in, and might not be usable until Week 5 when Tom Brady returns.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount has big game    Sun Sep 18, 04:52 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount rushed for 123 yards and one touchdown on 29 carries against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2.

Footballguys view: The Patriots stuck with Blount against the stout Dolphins front even though he was slowed down early. The second half yielded more big runs and the window for a big game. He should get a big workload Thursday night against Houston with the third string quarterback in.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo plays well before injury    Sun Sep 18, 04:48 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) went 18-for-27 for 234 yards and three touchdowns against the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 before he left the game because of a shoulder injury.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is almost certainly out for Thursday night against Houston. We'll see Jacoby Brissett and probably avoid the Patriots offense until Tom Brady returns. The team will have to sign a veteran backup. Matt Flynn and Ryan Lindley both spent time with the organization in the 2015 offseason, so they could get a call.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo suffers injury    Sun Sep 18, 02:18 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) suffered a shoulder injury during the team's Week 2 game and is considered questionable to return. QB Jacoby Brissett has replaced Garoppolo as the starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo was nearly flawless against a Dolphins defense that frustrated Russell Wilson last week. The Patriots play on Thursday night this week against the rough Texans defense, and the rookie Brissett very likely could start with the team signing a backup off of the street. At least Tom Brady is due back in Week 5.

The New England Patriots have declared TE A.J. Derby, DL Anthony Johnson, LB Dont'a Hightower, CB Eric Rowe, C Jonathan Cooper, OT LaAdrian Waddle, TE Rob Gronkowski inactive for Week 2.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski unlikely to play    Sun Sep 18, 09:53 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is not expected to play in Week 2's game against the Miami Dolphins, according to a source. However, he will participate in pregame workouts just to be sure.

Footballguys view: Martellus Bennett will start, but he will likely be kept in to block against the tough Dolphins defensive line more than he will run routes. This could help the outlook of Chris Hogan (as long as he is active), who would probably be the #2 target in the offense and draw some good matchups against the Miami corners.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will play catch with former NFL WR Wes Welker, in order to remain in football shape during his four-game suspension. He is prohibited from working out or having contact with current teammates and coaches.

Footballguys view: Brady to Welker used to be a thing. While Welker is out of the league, his chemistry with Brady should help keep the veteran QB sharp while he's suspended.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski listed as questionable    Fri Sep 16, 06:48 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 16, and is listed as questionable for Week 2.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski looked on the doubtful side of questionable in practice on Thursday, refraining from running routes with the team. The Patriots also play on Thursday next week, so if Gronkowski is out this week, you might have to wait until Week 4 to use him.

Patriots | Chris Hogan listed as questionable    Fri Sep 16, 05:05 PM

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan (shoulder) is listed as questionable heading into Week 2 versus the Miami Dolphins.

Footballguys view: Hogan is truly questionable for Week 2. If he is out along with Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman will be set up to get a ton of targets against the Dolphins with rookie Malcolm Mitchell and Danny Amendola also playing a larger role Sunday.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski 'probably' out Sunday    Fri Sep 16, 02:16 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (hamstring) is limited in what he can do and will 'probably' miss the team's Week 2 contest.

Footballguys view: Usually we would say if Gronk is on the field, you are playing him. It sounds like he would be very limited, possibly to blocking as he was in practice earlier this week. With a Thursday game up next week, it sounds like we aren't going to be able to trust Gronkowski in our lineups until Week 4.

New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett figures to be used extensively as a blocker again in Week 2 versus the Miami Dolphins, according to CSN New England's Tom Curran.

Footballguys view: Nate Solder could play this week, but Rob Gronkowski will probably be out again. Bennett can help slow down the Dolphins talented defensive line in the run and passing game. Unless he catches a short score, he probably won't be worth much in fantasy this week.
