Patriots | Shane Vereen not asking for $5 million    Fri Feb 27, 12:54 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Shane Vereen made it clear that he doesn't expect to make $5 million in 2015, as was previously reported.

Footballguys view: It's ridiculous to think that Vereen would ask for that given his track record and the current market for running backs.

Patriots | NE interested in Percy Harvin if cut    Tue Feb 24, 03:07 PM

New York Jets WR Percy Harvin will draw interest from the New England Patriots if he is released by the Jets this offseason. Harvin is unlikely to return to the Jets unless he takes less than the $10.5 million he's owed next season.

Footballguys view: Bill Belichick loves him some Florida players. Harvin was a star in college for Belichick's buddy, former Gators coach Urban Meyer. New England will be one of several teams interested in Harvin if he is let go. The Patriots tried trading for Harvin before he was traded to the Jets last year.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower has surgery    Sun Feb 22, 07:22 AM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) underwent surgery to repair a torn labrum and will be sidelined for approximately six or seven months.

Footballguys view: Hightower could be an option to begin the season on the PUP list if he is not on schedule or ahead of schedule in his recovery. He missed four games in 2014, but he still finished second on the team with six sacks.

Patriots | Charles Clay may not an option for NE?    Sat Feb 21, 01:28 PM

Miami Dolphins impending free-agent TE Charles Clay may not be an option for the New England Patriots after all once free agency commences, according to Boston Herald beat reporter Jeff Howe.

Footballguys view: The Patriots also might have interest in Julius Thomas (Broncos). Clay will come for a cheaper price than Thomas, but the Patriots will have to watch what they spend. They are currently over the cap, but there will be some moves in the near future that take some of that money off the books.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley ahead of schedule    Fri Feb 20, 06:49 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (knee) is about four weeks ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Ridley hopes to be able to return to the field in May.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Patriots and gives them some leverage in Shane Vereen's contract talks. Vereen wants too much money ($5 million a year reportedly) and if Ridley is coming back and looks good, New England has options.

Patriots | Shane Vereen hoping for $5 million    Thu Feb 19, 04:20 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Shane Vereen is expecting a contract worth at least $5 million per season, according to a source. Vereen would like to remain with the Patriots, but there have been no indications on whether the sides are close on a new deal.

Footballguys view: That's a lot of scratch for Vereen and it seems unlikely that the Patriots - who aren't all that free with their money as a general rule - will pay him that. If he won't budge off that money, expect Vereen to be elsewhere next season.

Patriots | Stephen Gostkowski unlikely for tag    Tue Feb 17, 01:38 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent PK Stephen Gostkowski is unlikely to receive the franchise tag because impending free-agent FS Devin McCourty is a better candidate for it.

Footballguys view: However, if McCourty signs a long-term deal, Gostkowski could receive the tag, which runs at a price of around $3.75 million this year.

Patriots | Stephen Gostkowski may be tag candidate    Sun Feb 15, 12:36 PM

Patriots | Devin McCourty could receive tag    Sun Feb 8, 10:44 AM

New England Patriots impending free-agent FS Devin McCourty is a candidate for the franchise tag if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement by the deadline.

Footballguys view: The tag would come with an approximate $9.5 million price tag. It would keep other teams from scooping McCourty up on the open market, and it would allow the Patriots to have more time to sign the talented free safety to a long-term deal.

Patriots | Nine signed to Futures contracts    Thu Feb 5, 05:58 PM

The New England Patriots signed OG Chris Barker, DE Jake Bequette, QB Garrett Gilbert, DB Justin Green, OT Caylin Hauptmann, WR Jonathan Krause, LBs Eric Martin and Deontae Skinner and DB Daxton Swanson to Reserve/Futures deals Thursday, Feb. 5.

Footballguys view: Gilbert is the former Texans Longhorns quarterback who transferred to SMU. He was a sixth-round pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL draft, but he failed to make an impact and was released during final cuts. Gilbert was added to the Rams practice squad, but was released less than two months later. He has good accuracy, but his pop-gun arm isn't going to test defenses.

NFL | Blake Sims open to playing other positions    Wed Feb 4, 08:27 PM

Michael Casagrande, from AL.com, reports Alabama QB Blake Sims has his sights set on playing QB at the NFL level, but he's also open to switching positions. Having played running back earlier in his Crimson Tide career, Sims is ready for whatever the future holds. "Yeah, that could happen," he said. "Maybe play some slot or something. But right now I'm focusing on quarterback."

Footballguys view: Sims didn't look good during the week of practice leading up to the Senior Bowl. We doubt he plays quarterback at the pro level. However, he is a helluva athlete with the ability to make defenders miss in the open field. Some team might be willing to give him a shot at running back or slot receiver. We've seen plenty of teams make that move, including (but not limited to) the Patriots switching Julian Edelman from QB to WR when he came out of college.

Patriots | Shane Vereen sets Super Bowl record    Mon Feb 2, 05:07 PM

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen set a Super Bowl record Sunday, Feb. 1, with 11 catches -- most of any running back in Super Bowl history.

Footballguys view: Vereen was a big part of the Patriots game plan. With the pass-rushers for the Seahawks getting after Tom Brady, the Patriots decided to slow things down by hitting Vereen out of the backfield. It's Football 101, and it worked against Seattle on Sunday.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower expected to have surgery    Mon Feb 2, 01:34 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) is expected to undergo labrum surgery in the near future.

Footballguys view: Hightower's diving tackle of Marshawn Lynch at the one-yard line ended up saving the game for the Patriots. We'll see him undergo surgery in the near future so he can begin the road to recovery.

Patriots | Julian Edelman was cleared to return    Mon Feb 2, 01:24 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (head) was tested for a concussion and was cleared to play after he left Super Bowl XLIX with a head injury, according to a source.

Footballguys view: He was cleared to return....after the drive ended in a touchdown. After the play he got hit by Kam Chancellor, Edelman looked woozy. He was allowed to stay in the game and ended up scoring the go-ahead touchdown.

Patriots | Tom Brady not thinking retirement    Mon Feb 2, 09:22 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said he is not considering retirement after winning his fourth Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. 'No. I've got a lot of football left,' the 37-year-old Brady said.

Footballguys view: Brady has previously stated that he wants to play until he's 40 years old. That gives him at least a couple more seasons as the Patriots starting quarterback. His skill set has not diminished yet, and Brady has a competitive spirit that burns like 1000 suns. He's not going anywhere.

Patriots | Shane Vereen helps in passing game    Sun Feb 1, 11:19 PM

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen had 11 catches for 64 yards and four carries for 13 yards in a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: Vereen was a huge piece of the Patriots offense on Sunday night. Out of the backfield, Vereen was able to get open against Seahawks linebackers. Tom Brady had no problems checking down to Vereen in order to keep drives alive.

Patriots | Julian Edelman delivers in clutch    Sun Feb 1, 11:05 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman had nine catches for 109 yards, including a game-winning, three-yard touchdown, in a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: Edelman was able to pick on the Seahawks all game long. His jerk routes worked to perfection in order to get open underneath. Edelman took a huge hit from strong safety Kam Chancellor, but he was able to stay in the game and continue to deliver when Tom Brady needed him the most.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed a Super Bowl-record 37 passes for 328 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions in a 28-24 win over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: Brady kept making short throws to stay on rhythm during the game. He did a good job of avoiding pressure for the most part, and Brady stayed calm after making mistakes.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was named the Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, Feb. 1. It is the third time in his career that he has won the award.

Footballguys view: Brady joins Joe Montana (49ers) as the only quarterback with three Super Bowl MVPs in his career. He was masterful as the Patriots used Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman (and Shane Vereen) as primary targets.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount has charges withdrawn    Fri Jan 30, 10:41 AM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount completed his 50 hours of community service, and his drug charge from earlier this season has been withdrawn, according to his attorney.

Footballguys view: Blount was charged with marijuana possession in August with Le'Veon Bell. Now that he's been through the legal process, the NFL could step in with a fine or suspension. If suspended for 2015, we can't see it being more than maybe a game or two. The NFL might decide just to fine Blount instead.

Patriots | Tom Brady practices fully Thursday    Thu Jan 29, 10:15 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) was able to go through a full practice session Thursday, Jan. 29.

Footballguys view: "Thank goodness - we were worried" said nobody ever. Brady was already fighting off a cold and so this is just one more thing that really won't throw him off. It's not as if mobility is huge for his game anyway. He will be fine until perhaps the Seahawks start to blitz.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo impressing in practice    Thu Jan 29, 08:42 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been impressing in his mimicking of Seattle Seahawks QB Russell Wilson in practice. He has been studying the dual threat quarterback, and trying his best in practice to get the Patriots ready for Super Bowl XLIX. 'I've had to get a lot faster real fast,' Garoppolo said. 'He's an athletic guy, so (I am) trying to extend plays and give those guys the best looks I can. It's a tough balance between studying their offense and studying our defense, so it's a little bit of time management.'

Footballguys view: These are the interesting things we learn during media sessions when it's not about Marshawn Lynch not speaking. Many teams do this to varying degrees of effectiveness. The real question is, will Garoppolo be ready if something happens to Tom Brady? One thing for sure - Patriots fans won't be.

Patriots | Tom Brady fighting a cold    Wed Jan 28, 12:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (illness) admitted that he is currently battling a cold, but he said he expects to be 100% ready for the Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. 'I've had it for four to five days, my kids got sick and my wife's pretty sick right now,' Brady said. 'I brought it, unfortunately, to Phoenix, but I'll be fine. I'll be good.' Brady is focused on rest and eating plenty of garlic, which he said is one of his 'old remedies.'

Footballguys view: It's the middle of the week, so we're expecting Brady to be close to full strength by the time the game rolls around on Sunday.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount to have big role?    Tue Jan 27, 08:00 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount should be a factor in Super Bowl XLIX against the Seattle Seahawks Sunday, Feb. 1, in the opinion of Boston Herald writer Karen Guregian. Despite Seattle's highly ranked run defense, they lost games earlier this season to both the Kansas City Chiefs and the Dallas Cowboys, who used run-heavy game plans. The Green Bay Packers also had early success on the ground against the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game. The Packers opened up holes by overloading lanes with pulling linemen, which is something the Patriots like to do with their guards and tackles. If the Patriots stay away from the run, Seattle's linebackers will drop back in zone coverage, making it tougher on the Patriots' passing game.

Footballguys view: Blount is a key player for the Patriots on Sunday. By running the ball effectively, the Patriots will be able to keep the Seattle defense honest. They can then strike through the air with play-action passing.

Patriots | Tom Brady said he feels perfect    Tue Jan 27, 07:13 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has publicly stated he'd like to play well into his 40s and feels perfect after playing his 15th season, but his father Tom Brady Sr. believes it won't end well with the Patriots. The younger Brady is under contract through 2017, although he'll turn 40 years old prior to that season. Brady has publicly said he plans on playing until he's 43 or 44. The 37-year-old quarterback is scheduled to make $12 million in 2015, $8 million in 2016 and $9 million in 2017. His father thinks his son's determination to keep playing won't go over well with the Patriots' brass. "It will end badly,' Brady Sr. told New York Times Magazine. 'It does end badly. And I know that because I know what Tommy wants to do. He wants to play 'til he's 70. ... It's a cold business. And for as much as you want it to be familial, it isn't.'

Footballguys view: Brady goes to many lengths to stay in the best shape he possibly can. Things can change quickly in the NFL, but the way it looks now we could see Brady play at least a couple of more seasons.

Patriots | Seattle looking to shut down Gronk    Tue Jan 27, 12:17 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski is an offensive weapon that the Seattle Seahawks are focused on shutting down during the Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll thinks his team matches up well against the All-Pro tight end, though, as LBs K.J. Wright and Bruce Irvin are 'pretty tall and long' and SS Kam Chancellor is 'about as big a strong safety as you can find.' The Seahawks will be focused on not allowing Gronkowski and QB Tom Brady to take over the game.

Footballguys view: Yeah, good luck with that. The Seattle defense has a weak spot in the middle, and that's Gronkowski's territory. They'll have to commit at least two defenders to slowing down the superstar tight end....and even that may not prevent him from having a big game. Gronkowksi is a key player to watch on Super Sunday.

Patriots | Tom Brady clutch in last quarter of postseason    Mon Jan 26, 04:36 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has led eight playoff game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime in his career, more than any other player.

Footballguys view: Tom Brady is clutch--period. His play has gotten him back to the sixth Super Bowl of his career. Brady could win his fourth Super Bowl title on Sunday, joining Terry Bradshaw (Steelers) and Joe Montana (49ers) as the only starting quarterbacks with as many victories in the big game.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 12 of his 24 pass attempts on scramble plays outside of the pocket this year for 198 yards and two scores. Last year, he was 0-of-4 on similar plays.

Patriots | Seattle to be physical with Gronk?    Thu Jan 22, 05:39 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski is often a tough matchup for opposing defenses, but Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane said he doesn't think Gronkowski is 'that good.' 'He's OK. He does have a big body. But from what I've seen on tape, he doesn't like you putting your hands on him. So if we put our hands on him and shake him up a little bit, he won't catch that many balls,' Lane said. Gronkowski caught 82 passes for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns this season. Lane could be lined up often against Gronkowski in the slot in the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: Gronk smash is more than just a saying, it's Gronkowski's mindset. Good luck with Seattle trying physical coverage against him. The weakness for the Seahawks defense is up the middle, and we think it will be difficult for them to slow Gronkowski down.
