Patriots | Danny Amendola open to pay cut    Mon Feb 20, 09:09 AM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is receptive to a pay cut in order to stay with the team.

Footballguys view: Amendola should be open for a pay cut if he wants to stay with the Patriots. He's got a $7.7 million cap number but there's only $1.4 million remaining in dead money. He'll either take a pay cut or won't return to New England.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower could get transition tag    Sun Feb 19, 03:04 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower may be more likely to receive the transition tag than the franchise tag if the Patriots decide to use a tag on him, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Hightower would receive around $11 million if he receives the transition tag and the Patriots would have the first right of refusal if another team signed him. The franchise tag would be worth between $14.5 million and $15 million, which may be too rich for the Patriots.

Patriots | Tom Brady extension possible    Thu Feb 16, 09:27 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has expressed mutual interest in a new contract with the team, according to source. Talks are in preliminary stages. Brady is signed through 2019. He will earn $1 million in 2017, but he has a $14 million salary cap number.

Footballguys view: Brady wants to keep playing and the Patriots are much better with him than without him. It makes sense, especially when we factor in reducing that cap number. This could also be a sign that they are serious about moving Jimmy Garoppolo.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo draws praise    Wed Feb 15, 10:51 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo was compared to Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers and Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre by Patriots WR Julian Edelman during a Tuesday, Feb. 14, appearance on NFL Network. 'The guy is a stud. He went out and played in the regular season and played very well. He has that kind of gunslinger-like confidence, that Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers kind of confidence,' Edelman said. Garoppolo is entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower a candidate to be tagged    Tue Feb 14, 12:05 AM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower is 'the prime candidate to receive the franchise tag' if the team decides to use it, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com

Footballguys view: The Patriots have plenty of cap space to sign Hightower to a long-term deal. They could use the franchise tag as leverage to give themselves more time to work out a multi-year contract.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett may not re-sign    Mon Feb 13, 06:39 PM

The New England Patriots are interested in re-signing impending free-agent TE Martellus Bennett but may not be willing to get into a bidding war for him if other teams are interested, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have $61 million in cap space this offseason, the fifth-most in the NFL. They've got the money to keep Bennett, but the team does not make a habit of overpaying for talent. It's a fantastic draft class at tight end, so they could let Bennett go and try to add a player at the position in the draft.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler staying put    Sun Feb 12, 01:41 PM

New England Patriots restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler 'won't be going anywhere' this offseason as the team plans to place a first-round tender on him, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: That tender would pay Butler around $4 million in 2017. Other teams could offer Butler a contract, but the Patriots would have the right of refusal. They've got the third most cap space in the NFL, and the Patriots should work to get Butler signed to an agreement that keeps him on the team past just this year.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo to fetch Day 2 draft pick?    Sun Feb 12, 01:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to attract a second-round selection from interested teams this offseason, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: Would that be enough for the Patriots to let him go? Garoppolo was a second-round pick of the Patriots in 2014, and he hits free agency in 2018. The Patriots want to get something for him before they lose him and get nothing next offseason. It seems like the Browns may be the most interested, but the Bears and 49ers might want in on Garoppolo as well.

Patriots | Danny Amendola will need to take pay cut    Sun Feb 12, 01:18 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is due $6 million in base salary in 2017, but it is a 'certainty' he will not be returning under the turn of his current contract, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Amendola has a cap hit of $7.7 million in 2017, but there's only $1.4 million in dead money remaining on his deal. We're fairly certain he will do what it takes to stay with the Patriots.

Patriots | Julian Edelman productive on road    Sat Feb 11, 03:44 PM

Patriots | No INTs on road for Tom Brady    Sat Feb 11, 03:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady threw for 1,973 yards, 18 touchdowns and zero interceptions on the road this season. He threw for 1,581 yards, 10 touchdowns and two interceptions at home.

Footballguys view: Love him or hate him, all football fans have to genuflect at the greatness of Tom Brady. He's one of the best quarterbacks to ever play in the game, and many can make the argument that he's the best in history.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower may test the market     Thu Feb 9, 04:28 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower said he's been in contact with former teammate and current Cleveland Browns LB Jamie Collins and other players to better handle the free-agent process. When asked if Hightower would take less money to stay with the Patriots, Hightower only said 'we'll see,' and that he has a long process to go through.

Patriots | No surgery for Dont'a Hightower    Wed Feb 8, 04:49 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (knee, shoulder) will not need to undergo any surgeries this offseason even though he dealt with knee and shoulder injuries during the season.

Footballguys view: Hightower missed three games this year, and he was never fully healthy dealing with these nagging injuries. A free agent this offseason, avoiding surgery should help his market value. The Patriots have the third-most salary cap space ($65 million) at this time, so if they want to keep Hightower they'll be able to afford him.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower could receive tag    Wed Feb 8, 03:04 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower is a candidate for the franchise tag if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement on a long-term deal.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have plenty of salary cap space this year. In fact, they have the third most at this time (around $65 million). They could place the tag on Hightower to keep him under their control while working behind the scenes to get him signed before the July 15th deadline.

Patriots | Three players sign with Patriots    Tue Feb 7, 06:25 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Housler, RB Tyler Gaffney and WR Devin Lucien were signed to Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: With Martellus Bennett set to be a free agent, any tight end added by the Patriots will be one we're monitoring. Last with the Bears, Housler was released by the team after training camp in 2016. Gaffney is also a player we've been monitoring for some time in dynasty leagues. He's a powerful runner who could play a limited role for the Patriots if given a shot.

Patriots | Tom Brady not done playing    Mon Feb 6, 03:27 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said he will not retire despite being 40 years old next season and winning his record fifth Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: Some, including Brady's father, expect him to play as many as five more seasons. He is certainly in good enough shape mentally and physically. If the Patriots trade Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, then that's a good sign that they expect him to play at least 2-3 more years.

Patriots | James White sets points record    Mon Feb 6, 03:16 PM

New England Patriots RB James White set a Super Bowl record with 20 points scored in Super Bowl LI.

Footballguys view: White's performance won't be as overlooked as Grady Jarrett's three-sack day, but it is still hard to comprehend him not getting the MVP with a record-setting performance. He should enter the 2017 season with a bigger role than the one he had when all three Patriots running backs were healthy in 2016.

Patriots | Dion Lewis hurt his hamstring    Mon Feb 6, 08:21 AM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (hamstring) injured his hamstring late in Super Bowl LI. Lewis said the injury didn't seem severe.

Footballguys view: Lewis's leg locked up in shades of his ACL tear from 2015, but it sounds like this won't even be an injury that keeps him out of OTAs. He didn't play as big a role as he did in previous games, but Lewis was still a key part of the Super Bowl run when he scored in three different ways in the divisional win over the Texans.

Patriots | NE would like to bring back Michael Floyd    Mon Feb 6, 03:47 AM

The New England Patriots would like to bring back WR Michael Floyd for the 2017 season, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Floyd would draw huge money on the free agent market if he was more productive and stayed off of the police blotter. The Patriots can get a big discount because Floyd is at the bottom of his career and they showed interest when the rest of the league didn't. If they can turn around his career, he'll be a huge value.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett getting franchise tag?     Mon Feb 6, 03:25 AM

There is speculation the New England Patriots may use the franchise tag on TE Martellus Bennett for 2017.

Footballguys view: The franchise tag at tight end is relatively cheap compared to other positions because of the lack of stars, and Bennett could draw a big payday in the offseason as a true two-way tight end who is still playing very well when healthy.

Patriots | James White scores three times    Sun Feb 5, 10:53 PM

New England Patriots RB James White had six carries for 29 yards and two touchdowns and caught 14 passes for 110 yards and a score in a 34-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI Sunday, Feb. 5.

Footballguys view: White would have been the MVP in many other Super Bowls, but he couldn't overshadow Tom Brady. Still, he was a massive presence after LeGarrette Blount's fumble marginalized him and Dion Lewis was quiet. White will go down in NFL history for scoring one of the most memorable touchdowns in NFL history and his fantasy value is trending up going into next season.

Patriots | Record night for Tom Brady    Sun Feb 5, 10:42 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady set Super Bowl records for passing yards and completions in a 34-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons Sunday, Feb. 5, completing 43 of his 62 attempts for 466 yards, two touchdowns and an interception.

Footballguys view: Brady was repeatedly hit and his first half pick six seemed like it was going to be the decisive play in the game until well into the fourth quarter. Many will anoint Brady the greatest quarterback in NFL history after a fifth Super Bowl and in such a stunning manner.

Patriots | Unwanted record for Tom Brady    Sun Feb 5, 08:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady threw his 31st career postseason interception in Super Bowl LI Sunday, Feb. 5, breaking a tie with retired QB Brett Favre for the most ever in the postseason.

Footballguys view: No one wants to breaking Brett Favre's records for interceptions, but at least it means Brady has been in the postseason a ton. Today will be remembered by many as the day Brady cemented his legacy as the best, so the record takes on a different meaning.

Patriots | Michael Floyd expected to be inactive    Sun Feb 5, 03:11 PM

New England Patriots WR Michael Floyd is expected to be a healthy scratch for Super Bowl LI.

Footballguys view: The acquisition of Floyd for the last three games of the regular season was more to get a chance to evaluate him and pocket a discount on a new deal for a first-round quality physical talent than his ability to contribute this year. Floyd has recently expressed that he wants to stay in Foxboro.

Patriots | New England pursued DeAndre Hopkins    Sun Feb 5, 02:04 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins was a primary trade target for the New England Patriots during the season. Prior to dealing LB Jamie Collins to the Cleveland Browns for a conditional third-round pick, the Patriots asked for Hopkins in a potential trade for Collins.

Footballguys view: Hopkins will be a free agent in 2018, so if the Texans are unsure about signing him long-term, trading him would make sense. It still seems very likely that they are planning on retaining him, so this is more about the Patriots looking for talent at wide receiver than the Texans making Hopkins available.

Patriots | Tom Brady expected to play 3-5 more years    Sun Feb 5, 01:51 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could play three to five more years as the team plans for the long-term, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. It is that window that is allowing the Patriots to consider trading Jimmy Garoppolo.

Footballguys view: The team also likes rookie Jacoby Brissett as a backup, so they wouldn't be worried about having him one Brady injury or suspension away from starting. Garoppolo's value is at a peak with his strong play early this season and one more year of rookie contract pay before having to back up the Brinks truck for long term money. He's likely to get dealt this offseason.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski wants a long career    Sat Feb 4, 04:14 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski said he plans on playing as long as he can even though he has dealt with multiple injuries during his career.

Footballguys view: Some have wondered if Gronkowski's latest back ailment will result in him losing something he won't get back. He'll turn 28 in May and has defied these kinds of worries before, but it might be time to get out in dynasty leagues if you have another strong option at tight end. On the other hand, if you have always coveted Gronk, this is about as low as his value is going to get for a bit unless he has trouble getting back on the field.

Patriots | Dante Scarnecchia plans to return    Sat Feb 4, 02:09 PM

New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia said he plans to return in 2017 even though he will be 69 years old.

Footballguys view: Scarnecchia rehabilitated an offensive line that failed due to injuries as the season went on in 2015. This year, he has made the line a strength again and turned Marcus Cannon into one of the better tackles in the league.
