Patriots | Nick Caserio unhappy in New England?    Mon Jun 17, 03:07 PM

New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio reportedly 'wants out' of New England and wants to become the general manager of the Houston Texans, according to Ben Volin of the Boston Globe. According to Volin, Caserio would have simply turned down the Texans' offer to become their general manager if he didn't want the job, forcing the Patriots to enforce a clause in his contract and file tampering charges to get Houston to back off.

Footballguys view: Caserio's contract reportedly runs through the 2020 NFL Draft. It looks like the Patriots may make him honor that entire contract, but all reports indicate Caserio could wind up in Houston after that.

Patriots | Sony Michel recovering from surgery    Wed Jun 12, 02:17 PM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (knee) missed some offseason workouts because he recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, according to a source. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: It now all makes sense. Michel hasn't been practicing for a few weeks and now we know that he had a simple knee scope. Barring any setbacks, we should see him ready for camp and Michel should earn the lead back duties for the Patriots in 2019.

Patriots | Braxton Berrios making strides    Sun Jun 9, 08:36 PM

New England Patriots WR Braxton Berrios has been 'one of the most improved players' during spring practices, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.

Footballguys view: Berrios, a sixth-round pick for the Patriots in 2018, has the quickness and concentration to work great on underneath routes. In fact, he could one day be the replacement for Julian Edelman in the Patriots passing game. We don't want to get too far ahead, but Berrios is a talent...one that has stood out to Mike Reiss (he always has the greatest Pats insight). We'll continue to monitor Berrios in dynasty formats and watch to see what he does in training camp and preseason.

Patriots | Sony Michel's absence puzzling    Thu Jun 6, 12:30 PM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel (unknown) has missed all three days of the team's minicamp this week with no explanation from the team.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation as Michel should be the top back for the Patriots in 2019, although he is going to face competition from rookie Damien Harris. One beat reporter believes the team is simply managing the workload for Michel, who has had a history of knee issues dating back through his time at Georgia.

Patriots | Tom Brady hoping for few more seasons    Thu Jun 6, 12:19 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said 'I hope I can play that long,' when asked Thursday, June 6, is he still wants to play until he's 45.

Footballguys view: Brady stated he wanted to play until age 45 a while ago...and well, nobody should be doubting him. The team is still in a Super Bowl window even with Brady showing a few signs of slowing down. Brady is currently going off the board at QB16 (11.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Damien Harris inks rookie deal    Tue Jun 4, 07:54 PM

New England Patriots rookie RB Damien Harris signed a four-year, $3.6 million contract Tuesday, June 4. The deal includes an $886,319 signing bonus. Harris, a third-round pick of the Patriots, was the last member of the team's rookie class to be signed.

Footballguys view: We love Harris in dynasty formats. He'll compete for a spot in the pecking order behind starter Sony Michel, although there are some who say he could push for the starting job as a rookie. Harris is a natural runner who is capable of playing all three downs.

Patriots | Joe Thuney open to move to LT    Tue Jun 4, 07:18 PM

New England Patriots LG Joe Thuney has been filling in at left tackle for injured LT Isaiah Wynn (Achilles) at minicamp. He said Tuesday, June 4, he'd be open to playing a little more of the position in 2019. 'I was open-minded (about playing tackle),' Thuney said following Tuesday's practice. 'It's whatever the coaches ask of me. I'm grateful to be out there playing and just excited to be on the field.' Thuney's started the first 48 games of his career at left guard for the Patriots after being selected in the third round of the 2016 draft.

Patriots | Matt LaCosse in line to start opener?    Tue Jun 4, 04:36 PM

New England Patriots TE Matt LaCosse is 'a pretty smooth athlete ... and can serve as a viable target down the middle of the field,' according to the Boston Herald's Kevin Duffy, who adds that 'all signs point' to LaCosse starting Week 1 with Benjamin Watson serving a four-game suspension and Austin Seferian-Jenkins no longer with the team as he deals with personal issues.

Footballguys view: LaCosse came into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois in 2015 with the New York Giants. He's spent the last two seasons with the Broncos and is a big-bodied receiver. He had 24 catches for 250 yards and one touchdown in 2018. LaCosse is in line for a big role unless the Patriots add some help via trade or free agency.

Patriots | Austin Seferian-Jenkins let go    Tue Jun 4, 02:04 PM

New England Patriots TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins was released Tuesday, June 4. Seferian-Jenkins reportedly wants to 'step away for a month' due to personal issues.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are now really thin at the tight end position. Ben Watson is suspended for the first four games of the season, and that leaves former Broncos tight end Matt LaCosse as their top option. We'll see if the team makes a move here.

Patriots | Tom Brady ready for minicamp    Mon Jun 3, 06:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady reported to the team Monday, June 3, for the start of the mandatory minicamp this week.

Footballguys view: Brady skipped all of OTAs this year...just like he did last year. When the work is mandatory, Brady will show up...just like he did on Monday. Keep Brady healthy and the Patriots are set to make another deep postseason run in 2019.

Patriots | Lead back role up for grabs?    Mon Jun 3, 04:34 PM

New England Patriots RBs Sony Michel and Damien Harris are competing for lead-back duties with James White locked into his role and Rex Burkhead likely viewed as a jack-of-all-trades, change-of-pace runner, according to Kevin Duffy of the Boston Herald.

Footballguys view: The Patriots always have a collection of backs and there is one they usually lean on more than others. That back in 2019 is likely going to be Sony Michel. We'll see how this battle shakes out in training camp. We love Harris as a dynasty prospect but Michel is more explosive and has a year of pro experience under his belt.

Patriots | Chase Winovich signs rookie deal    Mon Jun 3, 10:53 AM

New England Patriots third-round pick DE Chase Winovich signed a four-year deal Monday, June 3. The deal is worth $3,827,312 with a $997,312 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: There is a lot to like about Winovich's game. He's one of the most relentless players in this draft class and loves to get after opponents with a non-stop motor. Winovich plays with natural violence and has an intimidating edge to his game. His aggressive play style can be a double-edged sword as he will overrun plays at time. We'll be interested to see how the Patriots use him in the pros, but the potential is there for him to be a solid starter for years to come.

Patriots | Phillip Dorsett in line to start?    Sun Jun 2, 09:40 PM

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett 'seems like a logical fit' for the No. 3 receiver role in 2019, according to Phil Perry of NBC Sports Boston.

Footballguys view: Watch this closely in training camp. The Patriots could use Dorsett's speed to take the top off the defense while Julian Edelman works the underneath routes and rookie N'Keal Harry showcases his run-after-the-catch ability. We'll see in camp if Demaryius Thomas can even make the team as he returns from an Achilles' injury, and Dontrelle Inman should push Dorsett for the No. 3 job.

Patriots | Demaryius Thomas could be PUP candidate    Sun Jun 2, 03:31 PM

New England Patriots WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles) could start the 2019 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of his Achilles tendon injury, in the opinion of The Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: The contract the Patriots gave Thomas far from guaranteed a roster spot, but if he can recover, he could start and be relevant in fantasy leagues. His progress will be important to monitor when calculating the first-year value of #32 overall pick N'keal Harry.

Patriots | Sony Michel to return kicks?    Thu May 30, 09:17 PM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel is currently the only player listed as kick returner on the current depth chart.

Footballguys view: It would be an interesting move...especially considering Michel should be the top running back for the Patriots this year. Fantasy GMs are currently taking him off the board at RB22 (4.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Benjamin Watson has chance at incentives    Tue May 28, 02:26 AM

New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson will still have a chance to earn extra money via incentives despite his four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. He will receive $250,000 if he participates in 35 percent of the team's offensive snaps, and another $400,000 if he makes it to 45 percent. He needs to play roughly 66 percent of the snaps in the 12 games he is eligible to earn full incentives.

Footballguys view: Watson is a seasoned veteran who retired then un-retired to return to the team that drafted him. He'll get to do everything with the team during the offseason, training camp and the preseason. Once the regular season begins, Watson will have to stay away for a month during his suspension. Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Matt LaCosse will compete to be the top tight end in camp.

Patriots | Ryan Allen, Jake Bailey in early battle    Mon May 27, 01:39 AM

New England Patriots Ps Ryan Allen and Jake Bailey, a fifth-round draft pick, are expected to have a lengthy competition with a winner determined over time. Bailey figures to have a leg up based on his draft status and leg strength, and figures to be given every chance to win the job.

Patriots | Three QBs filling in during workouts    Mon May 27, 01:31 AM

New England Patriots QBs Danny Etling, Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham are splitting up the workload in voluntary organized team activities with QB Tom Brady not participating for the second year in a row.

Footballguys view: When the work becomes mandatory, Brady will be in attendance. We'll see how the depth chart behind Brady shapes up during training camp and the preseason. Hoyer is the seasoned veteran who could be the primary backup for Brady with the Patriots still in a Super Bowl window. Stidham is the interesting rookie we like in dynasty formats. We'll see if the fourth-round pick out of Auburn can develop and learn behind one of the greatest.

Patriots | N'Keal Harry making impact early on    Mon May 27, 01:24 AM

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry has lined up in multiple spots so far during organized team activities (OTAs), and head coach Bill Belichick has referred to the rookie as 'smart.'

Footballguys view: Harry can do a lot with the rock. He's a run-after-the-catch specialist and the Patriots should be able to get him the ball in multiple ways. He's super confident and incredibly competitive, so we're excited to see what the rookie can do in 2019. Fantasy GMs are taking him off the board at WR34 (8.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Two not yet cleared for drills    Mon May 27, 01:22 AM

Patriots | Benjamin Watson to be suspended    Sun May 26, 05:54 PM

New England Patriots TE Benjamin Watson said he will be suspended for the first four games of the 2019 season because he failed a drug test this offseason.

Footballguys view: Watson said he took performance enhancers when he was retired, and the Patriots knew about the suspension when they signed him. While Watson is suspended, the team will turn to guys like Austin Seferian-Jenkins and Matt LaCosse at the tight end position.

Patriots | Tom Brady oldest player on old team    Sun May 26, 01:47 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady, 41, is the oldest player on a team that features a league-most 15 players at least 30 years old.

Footballguys view: Brady is the oldest and the best player on his team. He's shown little to no signs of slowing down and Fantasy GMs know what to expect from the future Hall of Fame quarterback. Even with a revamped WR corps and no Rob Gronkowski, Brady should put up solid QB2 numbers in 2019. He's currently going off the board at QB15 (10.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady working out with WRs    Sat May 25, 02:19 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has been working out with WRs Julian Edelman and N'Keal Harry this offseason.

Footballguys view: This is good news for Harry's short and long term prospects, as chemistry with Brady is the key to creating numbers in this offense with so many option routes. Edelman might lead the league in receptions this year and should be the engine of the pass offense.

Patriots | Joe Thuney sees time at LT    Fri May 24, 06:38 PM

New England Patriots OG Joe Thuney lined up at left tackle during practice Thursday, May 23, because OTs Isaiah Wynn (Achilles) and Yodny Cajuste (calf) are sidelined with injuries.

Footballguys view: The Patriots were left in the lurch when Jared Veldheer retired soon after signing a few weeks ago. Thuney has left tackle experience from college and is an excellent pass protector, but the team also has Cole Croston, who has been developing after making the team as a UDFA in 2017.

Patriots | Gerald McCoy not an option for NE?    Fri May 24, 05:02 PM

Free-agent DT Gerald McCoy (Buccaneers) is not an option for the New England Patriots at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McCoy would be an excellent addition for any team, and almost unfair for the Patriots to acquire, but it sounds like we don't need to worry about that possibility. The Patriots will rely on Danny Shelton, Lawrence Guy, and Mike Pennel at defensive tackle, with some snaps from Michael Bennett when he's not at defensive end.

Patriots | Limited workload for Sony Michel?    Fri May 24, 12:37 PM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel didn't participate in the team's OTA workouts Thursday, May 23, and one team beat writer says it's possible that the team is limiting Michel's offseason workload.

Footballguys view: The team doesn't want Michel to get banged up during the offseason. Michel is their talented runner but the backfield is jam-packed with talent. James White, Rex Burkhead and rookie Damien Harris could all be a big part of the backfield if called upon. Last year, Michel's knee was a problem for most of his rookie season and he only appeared in 13 games as the Pats lead back. Michel is currently RB21 (4.04) in 12-team PPR league drafts right now.

Patriots | Phillip Dorsett works with starters    Thu May 23, 11:12 PM

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett worked with the first-team offense during positional drills in OTAs Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: Keep a close eye on Dorsett's usage in training camp and the preseason. He's always had the speed to get on top of defenses in the blink of an eye, but Dorsett has never played up to his full potential. The Pats kept him around on a one-year deal earlier this offseason and there is buzz that the team feels he can be a No. 2 wide receiver. He's currently going undrafted in 12-team PPR leagues but that would quickly change if Dorsett wins a starting job...stay tuned.

Patriots | Strong start for N'Keal Harry     Thu May 23, 11:05 PM

New England Patriots WR N'Keal Harry worked with the second-team offense but 'looked more polished than expected' during OTAs Thursday, May 23, according to Andrew Callahan of MassLive.com.

Footballguys view: Harry is going to look polished as that's a hallmark of his game. He is all about setting up routes to maximize yards after the catch. Harry is ultra-competitive and can win contested catches regularly. Called a 'back shoulder boss' by NFL.com's Lance Zierlein, Harry should be a nice fit for the Patriots passing attack. Harry has a current ADP of WR34 (8.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Damien Harris works with receivers    Thu May 23, 10:59 PM

New England Patriots RB Damien Harris ran routes with the wide receivers during positional drills in OTAs Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: Harris was once thought of as a first-round prospect but fell to the third round of the 2019 NFL draft. He's a solid runner with natural vision and instincts for toting the rock. As a receiver, Harris has always been good at catching dump off passes out of the backfield. We'll see how the Patriots use him going forward in a cramped backfield.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn update    Wed May 22, 02:53 AM

New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn (Achilles') is making good progress in his recovery from Achilles' surgery, and the team believes he'll be ready for the start of the season, according to The Athletic's Jeff Howe.

Footballguys view: Wynn missed all of his rookie season in 2018 due to this Achilles' injury. He's set to be their starting left tackle this season after the team has moved on from both Nate Solder and Trent Brown in back-to-back offseasons. Wynn has impressed Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia with his play before the injury. We'll see where Wynn is at near the start of training camp, but the Patriots are a bit thin right now at tackle - especially because free agent Jared Veldheer informed them of his retirement earlier this week.

Updating an earlier report, New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman's two-year extension includes $12 million guaranteed and an $8 million signing bonus. The deal runs through the 2021 season.

Footballguys view: Edelman is a steady WR2 for Fantasy GMs in PPR leagues. His role has long been established and Edelman is showing no signs of slowing down as Tom Brady's favorite target.

Patriots | Julian Edelman receives extension    Tue May 21, 10:54 AM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman received a two-year extension Tuesday, May 21. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Edelman was entering the final year of his contract and the Patriots now keep him under contract through his age-35 season. He's Tom Brady's favorite target and should continue in that role even though the Patriots have revamped their WR corps. Fantasy GMs are currently taking Edelman off the board at WR15 (4.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

New England Patriots WR Dontrelle Inman's one-year deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus, a $100,000 reporting bonus and incentives worth up to $1 million.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have assembled quite a bit of new talent at the wide receiver position this offseason. They've added Inman this month and Demaryius Thomas earlier this offseason. The team also selected Arizona State WR N'Keal Harry in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. We'll see how Inman fits into the mix as a no.3 or no4 receiver on the roster.

Free-agent LB Jamie Collins (Browns) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Wednesday, May 15. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Collins returns to the Patriots after being traded from there to Cleveland in 2016. A second-round pick of the Patriots in 2013, Collins has not looked the same with the Browns. He's an effective player under Bill Belichick and might have a bounce-back season now that he's back in the fold.

Patriots | Jamie Collins headed back to Patriots?    Wed May 15, 01:31 PM

Footballguys view: The Browns released Collins in early March and he's garnered little interest on the open market. The Patriots are the team that traded him to the Browns in the first place and it would be just like them to take a flier on a player they know well. Collins won't get a big deal but he could get a shot with the Patriots again in the near future.

Footballguys view: Harry is an ultra-competitive wide receiver who can win at the catch point consistently. He's good when running after the catch and can turn short passes into scores. We're excited to see how Harry fits into the Patriots offense, mainly in dynasty formats.
