Patriots | Jonathan Jones working as No. 3 CB    Sun May 28, 04:24 PM

New England Patriots CB Jonathan Jones was receiving most of the snaps as the No. 3 cornerback in nickel formations during organized team activities last week.

Patriots | Andrew Hawkins contract update    Sun May 28, 04:14 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots WR Andrew Hawkins' one-year deal includes a $900,000 base salary.

Footballguys view: Hawkins is going to compete with Danny Amendola for the likely final spot at the WR position. He's lightning quick and fits the mold of what the Patriots are looking for. Hawkins took less money for a chance to compete for a championship with the Patriots.

Patriots | Danny Amendola in fight for last WR spot    Sun May 28, 01:45 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is expected to battle Andrew Hawkins for the sixth and likely final receiver spot in camp, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Amendola took a pay cut earlier this year to help his case for making the final roster. Now scheduled to count $3 million against he cap, Amendola will have to beat out Hawkins for that final spot. He's familiar with the offense, so that gives him an edge, but Amendola has been injury prone during his pro career. The smallest setback could be all Hawkins needs to win a job on the 53-man roster.

Patriots | Dion Lewis' roster spot likely safe    Sun May 28, 11:08 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis still has a spot on the club despite the additions of Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead this offseason, likely as a kickoff returner and reserve running back who will play 15 to 20 snaps per game, but ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: James White is in the backfield as well, so as you can see the Patriots are jam-packed at the position. Gillislee should be playing the LeGarrette Blount role in 2017 with White as a change-of-pace back. The roles for Burkhead and Lewis on offense will be small unless injuries strike ahead of them on the depth chart.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski looks like old self    Fri May 26, 09:46 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) has been a full participant in drills during voluntary workouts, and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels said Gronkowski has been 'involved in everything' and 'looks like Gronk.'

Footballguys view: Great news for the Patriots, and great news for fantasy owners. Everyone knows that if he's healthy then Gronkowski will perform like a top flight fantasy tight end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski cleared to take field    Thu May 25, 03:12 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) has progressed well enough that he has been cleared to take the field for organized team activities.

Footballguys view: We're not really worried about Gronkowski, and we think he might have returned quicker last season had Tom Brady not been suspended. He should remain the top fantasy tight end again this season.

Patriots | Devin Street to be cut    Wed May 24, 04:42 PM

New England Patriots WR Devin Street will be waived to create a roster spot for WR Andrew Hawkins, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick out of PITT in 2014, Street has bounced around the league and never played up to his potential. He may have a hard time finding work now that he's on the open market.

Patriots | New England set to add Andrew Hawkins    Wed May 24, 01:26 PM

Free-agent WR Andrew Hawkins (Browns) is close to signing a one-year deal with the New England Patriots, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hawkins wanted to sign with a contender...and there's no team with a better chance of winning the Super Bowl than the New England Patriots. He's got the perfect skill set for a Patriots WR. Hawkins is lightning quick and can break ankles after the catch. He'll compete for a roster spot behind Julian Edelman, Brandin Cooks and Chris Hogan.

Patriots | Restructured deal for Rob Gronkowski    Tue May 23, 05:35 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski restructured his deal for 2017 and has a chance to become the highest paid tight end in the league.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski can play like the best tight end in the league...if healthy. This deal is structured to compensate him if he stays healthy and produces at the expected level. The deal can boost his salary from $5.25 million to $10.75 million.

Patriots | DeAndrew White joins Patriots    Mon May 22, 05:38 PM

Free-agent WR DeAndrew White (49ers) was signed by the New England Patriots Monday, May 22.

Patriots | Julian Edelman sticking around?    Sun May 21, 08:40 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman is in the final year of his contract, but former teammate Heath Evans said he doesn't expect a contract dispute like the one that saw WR Wes Welker leave New England and sign with the Denver Broncos in free agency. 'I don't think we're going to see that with Jules,' Evans said. 'I think Jules embraces the grind-it-out-for-the-common-good mentality.'

Footballguys view: Edelman is underpaid for a wide receiver who consistently produces at a high level. This is his age-31 season, and we expect him to be just as productive as ever since he's Tom Brady's most trusted target. If he wants to stay with the Patriots past 2017, Edelman will likely have to accept some sort of team-friendly deal.

Patriots | Agent denies Tom Brady's concussion rumors    Fri May 19, 01:38 PM

Updating an ongoing story, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was not diagnosed with a concussion last season, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: Brady's wife, Gisele Bundchen, claimed Brady had a concussion last year even though he was never listed with one on the injury report. The Patriots have never listed Brady with a concussion.

Patriots | New England waives one, signs two     Thu May 18, 05:42 PM

New England Patriots OG Chris Barker was waived Thursday, May 18, while undrafted free-agent TE Sam Cotton (Nebraska) and rookie DE Deatrich Wise Jr. were signed to undisclosed deals.

Footballguys view: Cotton is a player we'll watch, but only in the deepest of deep dynasty leagues. He's all potential after only collecting 17 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns during four seasons with the Cornhuskers. He's got a dash of A.J. Derby (Broncos) to his game.

Patriots | Rob Housler could return to NE    Wed May 17, 06:12 PM

Updating a previous report, the New England Patriots released TE Rob Housler (hamstring) because he is dealing with a pulled hamstring, but the team could consider re-signing Housler once he is healed.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick in 2011 (Cardinals), Housler was going to find it difficult to make the Patriots 53-man roster anyway. They've got plenty of talent at the position with Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen as the top two on the depth chart. Behind those two, guys like James O'Shaughnessy and Jacob Hollister are interesting receiving tight ends. Matt Lengel is a big-bodied blocker, rounding out the tight ends on the roster. Housler will get healed eventually, but the Patriots may have already moved on by that time.

Patriots | Rob Housler released    Wed May 17, 05:19 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Housler (undisclosed) was released Wednesday, May 17, with a failed physical designation.

Footballguys view: Housler hasn't done much as a pro, and he was going to be hard pressed to make the final roster anyway.

Patriots | Pats work out Andrew Hawkins    Wed May 17, 04:33 PM

Free-agent WR Andrew Hawkins (Browns) worked out for the New England Patriots Wednesday, May 17, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots may just be updating their emergency list here. Hawkins would be a great fit on the Patriots with his quickness, agility and elusiveness after the catch. Released by the Browns earlier this year, Hawkins has been busy in college and recent got his degree from Columbia University with a 4.0 GPA. Congrats Hawk!

Patriots | Tom Brady had a concussion last year?    Wed May 17, 09:55 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (concussion) suffered a concussion last season, according to his wife, Gisele Bundchen, appearing on 'CBS This Morning' Wednesday, May 17.

Footballguys view: Leg issues got Brady on the injury report last year, but he was not listed as having a concussion in 2016. Did Brady hide the concussion symptoms so well that nobody noticed, or did the Patriots cover it up on the injury report? Or is Gisele just showing concern for her husband? We're certain about the latter, but there's no way of knowing for sure if Brady was concussed at all. This is a topic that will certainly be revisited later on. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Pats give LeGarrette Blount tender offer    Wed May 10, 03:40 PM

Free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount (Patriots) received a one-year, $1.1 million tender offer from the New England Patriots before the May 9 deadline that affects compensatory picks, according to a source. The Patriots would receive help in their chances for a compensatory pick if Blount signs with another team.

Footballguys view: This is a rarely used tender, but it breaks down as follows: If he signs with the Patriots, Blount can get $1.1 million this year. If he signs elsewhere before July 22, the departure will count toward New England's compensatory draft picks. After July 22, he can only sign with the Patriots for 2017.

Patriots | Christine Michael visits Pats    Wed May 10, 10:18 AM

Free-agent RB Christine Michael (Packers) visited the New England Patriots Tuesday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Michael has washed out of the league and has bounced around to several different teams despite the fact that he's got great natural talent as a runner. If anyone could rejuvenate his career, it would be the Patriots. They're likely just kicking the tires after adding both Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead this offseason.

Patriots | Michael Floyd will not return to Pats    Sun May 7, 06:39 PM

Free-agent WR Michael Floyd (Patriots) will not be re-signing with the New England Patriots this offseason, according to ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The Patriots made the move to add Brandin Cooks via free agency, so they don't have any room to take another flier on Floyd like they did last year. Floyd didn't do much of anything for the Patriots last year and was mostly inactive as they made their run to a championship. Only Washington and the Vikings have shown interest in Floyd this offseason.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler was hoping for trade    Fri May 5, 09:30 PM

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler wanted 'badly' to be traded to the New Orleans Saints, according to Mike Giardi of CSNNE.com.

Footballguys view: Butler is all about the Patriots....for now. He wants to be paid like one of the top corners in the game, and Butler should be able to get that money if he performs up to expectations again. He's a free agent in 2018, and that's likely when Butler will get that big payday.

Patriots | Taylor Mays to try out for Patriots    Thu May 4, 08:57 AM

Free-agent FS Taylor Mays (Bengals) has a tryout with the New England Patriots at their rookie minicamp, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mays has never lived up to expectations, but if there is a team on the planet which could get the maximum out of him, it's New England.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler reports    Wed May 3, 11:49 AM

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler reported to voluntary workouts this week.

Footballguys view: Butler has been connected in trade talks most of this offseason, but he's still on the team and he's reporting to the building. Reports indicate that Butler is not holding a grudge and he's ready to go. Lining up opposite Stephon Gilmore gives the Patriots one of the best CB duos in the league.

Patriots | Cody Hollister terms    Wed May 3, 09:05 AM

Undrafted free-agent WR Cody Hollister (Arkansas) signed a three-year deal with the New England Patriots that included a $10,000 signing bonus and $10,000 of his base salary guaranteed.

Patriots | Devin Street claimed by Patriots    Tue May 2, 05:18 PM

Free-agent WR Devin Street (Colts) was claimed off waivers Tuesday, May 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots will kick the tires on Street to see if they can use him in any way. He's bounced around the league so far, and this is his second stop in New England (2016). Street was signed to the team's practice squad on September 5th 2016 but he was lost to the Colts only a couple of weeks later. A fifth-round pick of the Cowboys in 2014, he's a size/speed guy at 6'3" 200 pounds but Street will struggle to make the final cuts with the Patriots.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee terms    Tue May 2, 09:00 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee's two-year, $6.4 million deal includes $4 million in 2017 via a $1.5 million guaranteed salary, a $2 million roster bonus and $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses. He's scheduled to make $2.4 million in 2018 with a $1.9 million salary and $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses.

Footballguys view: It's a good price for Gillislee, and it's cheaper than what LeGarrette Blount likely wanted on the open market. Gillislee is going to fill Blount's role in 2017, and that has plenty of fantasy value. Getting 1,000 yards rushing with 7-9 touchdowns is not out of the question, and that gives him RB2 upside with a RB4 price tag in your fantasy drafts.

Patriots | Jacob Hollister signs with Patriots    Mon May 1, 04:00 PM

Undrafted free-agent TE Jacob Hollister (Wyoming) received a $10,000 signing bonus and a $80,000 guaranteed base salary upon signing with the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Hollister is an interesting move tight end to keep an eye on...especially in New England. He's a good route runner and a deep threat. Hollister tracks passes well over his shoulder and does a good job of securing passes after the catch. He's not much of a blocker, but he is certainly a weapon the Patriots could develop. We're excited by his addition in super deep dynasty leagues.

Patriots | New England adds three UDFAs    Sun Apr 30, 01:55 PM

The New England Patriots have reportedly agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent RB LeShun Daniels Jr. as well as WRs Austin Carr (Northwestern) and Cody Hollister (Arkansas).

Footballguys view: Daniels is a big bruiser the team could develop with the LeGarrette Blount role in mind. Carr was highly productive, but is limited to a short and intermediate big slot role at best at the next level. Both are practice squad candidates, but ones to monitor in very deep dynasty leagues because of the quality of the Patriots organization.

New England Patriots DE Derek Rivers is expected to be part of the defensive end rotation as a rookie. He should also see playing time on special teams.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks' option exercised    Sat Apr 29, 01:05 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks' 2018 option was picked up, as expected, according to ESPN's Field Yates.

Footballguys view: The Patriots made the move to trade for Cooks earlier this offseason, and with the fifth-year option they have his rights for the next two years. Don't be surprised if they now try to work out some sort of long-term extension.

Patriots | Pats trade for James O'Shaughnessy    Sat Apr 29, 12:16 PM

The New England Patriots sent a 2017 fifth-round pick (No. 183 overall) to the Kansas City Chiefs for TE James O'Shaughnessy (foot) and a 2017 sixth-round pick (No. 216 overall).

Footballguys view: He was buried on the depth chart in Kansas City behind Travis Kelce and Demetrius Harris. O'Shaughnessy will continue to see little playing time in New England behind Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen. However, he's a favorite of our very own Matt Waldman due to his athletic ability and receiving skill set. Keep an eye on him in deep dynasty leagues.

Patriots | New England adds Antonio Garcia    Fri Apr 28, 10:41 PM

The New England Patriots selected OT Antonio Garcia with the 85th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 27.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see more meat on his bones, but his athleticism is good and he does a great job mirroring pass rushers. He also needs more refinement in technique, but if he can add some strength and muscle, Garcia could be a starter.

Patriots | New England selects Derek Rivers    Fri Apr 28, 10:34 PM

The New England Patriots selected LB Derek Rivers with the 83rd pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Here's a guy who, in lesser hands than those of Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia, might be destined for a poor career. His high-motor and versatility were a factor and could keep him on the field for the Patriots.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee will receive carries    Mon Apr 24, 07:44 PM

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee is expected to receive a role like the one free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount (Patriots) had this past season.

Footballguys view: Blount had a very fantasy relevant role with 18 rushing touchdowns to lead the league in 2016. Fantasy owners need to watch this situation closely for re-draft leagues, and dynasty owners who have Gillislee may have hit the jackpot.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount likely to find new team    Mon Apr 24, 07:43 PM

Free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount (Patriots) likely will not re-sign with the New England Patriots this offseason after the Patriots signed RB Mike Gillislee.

Footballguys view: The Patriots don't ...uh..mess around. They had an idea what they could get Blount for, and they had a breaking point with their leading rusher from 2016. Blount misread the open market and hasn't generated much interest out there in free agency.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee officially joins Patriots    Mon Apr 24, 04:05 PM

Buffalo Bills RB Mike Gillislee's two-year, $6.4 million offer sheet was not matched by the Bills, thus officially making him a member of the New England Patriots, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Gillislee is expected to take over LeGarrette Blount's role...and that is quite fantasy relevant. In 2016, Blount led the league with 18 rushing touchdowns and finished second in carries with 299. We'll see Gillislee work as the primary ball carrier with James White working as the pass catching back. Rex Burkhead and Dion Lewis will fit in somehow too.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo staying put?    Sun Apr 23, 08:14 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo 'isn't going anywhere,' according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: The Browns want Garoppolo, but they aren't willing to pay the price it would take to get him away from the Pats. They'll lose Garoppolo in free agency next year as he looks for a starting job...but they Patriots will get a compensatory pick for him they can use in 2019 if (when?) they lose the young passer.

Patriots | 'Long shot' Jimmy Garoppolo gets traded    Sun Apr 23, 02:27 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be the target of several last-ditch trade attempts from the Cleveland Browns leading up to the start of the 2017 NFL Draft, but the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian considers a potential deal a 'long shot' that would require an 'overwhelming offer'.

Footballguys view: The Browns may want Garoppolo but they may not be willing to pay the price it would take to add him. The draft will be the final deadline for any deal to get done. The Patriots will lose Garoppolo next year in free agency as he'll move on to get a starting job.

Patriots | Adoree' Jackson attracting interest    Sat Apr 22, 02:43 AM

Southern California CB Adoree' Jackson has had contact with the New England Patriots, although the team has not had an official visit with him.

Footballguys view: Jackson is one of the most athletic players in this year's draft class. He was a playmaker for the Trojans in college on offense, defense and special teams. Jackson may be too small to play on the outside, but he's got the skill set to be a fine slot corner in the NFL.
