Patriots | Stevan Ridley unlikely to rejoin Pats    Sat Feb 6, 02:54 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent RB Stevan Ridley is not expected to be pursued by the New England Patriots, his former team. The Patriots will likely look to add depth at running back this offseason, and Ridley is entering free agency, but New England is expected to look elsewhere.

Footballguys view: The RB market in free agency is going to be rough as there's a ton of talented backs who are likely to be available. Ridley's best days may be behind him, so we're not expecting the market to be white hot for his services.

Patriots | No surgery for Rob Gronkowski    Thu Feb 4, 04:07 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) did not require surgery on his knee or back, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That's a plus for Gronkowski and his knee. We expect him to be the top fantasy tight end again next year.

Patriots | No surgery for Dominique Easley    Thu Feb 4, 02:43 PM

New England Patriots DT Dominique Easley (quadriceps) doesn't require surgery on his partially torn quadriceps. He'll be ready for offseason workouts, according to a source.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler has knee injury    Sun Jan 31, 04:16 PM

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler (knee) is not playing in the Pro Bowl because he suffered a knee injury during the AFC Championship game.

Footballguys view: Butler will not need to undergo surgery for the injury. We should see him ready to go for OTAs and minicamp later this year.

Patriots | Danny Amendola release not expected    Sun Jan 31, 03:21 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is not expected to be released this offseason despite a $6.8 million salary cap hit he would cause. Releasing Amendola would save the Patriots $3.5 million against the salary cap.

Footballguys view: We'll see what the Patriots decide later this year. Amendola is a quality target for QB Tom Brady when healthy. The Patriots should make upgrades to the WR position this offseason, but we see Amendola sticking around in 2016.

Patriots | Bengals receivers of interest to Patriots?    Sat Jan 30, 02:40 PM

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WRs Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu could be targets for the New England Patriots this offseason, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Reiss believes Jones' route-running ability would translate well in New England's offensive system, and that Sanu could draw interest as an alumnus of the Rutgers, a program for which the Patriots have high regard.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have to upgrade the WR position. They need to move on from Brandon LaFell, and adding either Marvin Jones or Mohamed Sanu would be the necessary upgrade.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount will not require surgery    Wed Jan 27, 02:45 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount (hip) will not need surgery on his season-ending hip injury, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Good news for Blount here as he is expected to hit free agency. We feel pretty confident that Blount is going to return to the Patriots on a cheap deal. It's a good move for both sides.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo undergoes surgery    Wed Jan 27, 12:27 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (pectoral) underwent surgery Tuesday, Jan. 26, to repair a torn pectoral muscle, a source said. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Mayo's body isn't holding up. He's now ended three of the last four season on Injured Reserve with a major injury. Mayo is entering free agency in 2016, and there may not be many teams lined up to add the injury-prone veteran linebacker.

Patriots | New England likely to add at RB    Tue Jan 26, 12:06 AM

New England Patriots RB James White played 57 of the 83 offensive snaps in the AFC Championship Game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24, and RB Brandon Bolden played 16. RB Steven Jackson rounded things out with 11 snaps. The team will also get RB Dion Lewis (knee) back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2016, while RB LeGarrette Blount is an impending free agent. The team might face an offseason similar to 2011 when the selected a pair of backs in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Adding more weapons to the offense is a great idea. The team just wasn't the same after Lewis was lost for the season. Blount is okay, but he's a one-dimensional back who gets banged up. Lewis looked great in 2015 before getting hurt, but the Patriots need better options available and better competition in the backfield. Look for them to add a back in the draft or through a rich free agent class.

New England Patriots DEs Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich and Jabaal Sheard are each under contract for the 2016 season, and DEs Geneo Grissom and Trey Flowers provide depth for the future. The defensive end spot is not considered a position of need heading into the offseason.

Patriots | Two players sign Reserve/Futures deals    Mon Jan 25, 05:37 PM

New England Patriots WR DeAndre Carter and RB Joey Iosefa signed Reserve/Futures contracts Monday, Jan. 25.

Footballguys view: Carter was undrafted in 2015 coming out of Sacramento State. At 5'10" 185 pounds, Carter can get open on underneath routes and has moves in the open field. Iosefa is a fullback who will compete for a roster spot in 2016. He appeared in two games for the Patriots in 2015, finishing the season with 51 yards on 15 carries.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount staying with Patriots?    Mon Jan 25, 04:50 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB LeGarrette Blount could be on his way out of New England as he enters free agency this offseason. RB Dion Lewis (knee) will return from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and RB James White filled in nicely for Lewis. The Patriots also have another big back on their roster in RB Steven Jackson, putting Blount's future with New England in limbo.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked if Jackson was back with the Patriots next year. Blount works well with the Patriots when healthy. The team needs a power element to their rushing attack, and they may decide that Blount is the best way to go in 2016.

Patriots | Brandon LaFell could be gone     Mon Jan 25, 03:05 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent WR Brandon LaFell was the fourth wide receiver on the Patriots' depth chart for the AFC Championship, only played on 33 of 38 snaps and was not targeted. This could spell a LaFell release, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: LaFell is just too inconsistent to be relied on, and the Patriots finally figured that out. After a career-high 74 catches for 953 yards and seven touchdowns in 2014, LaFell could only muster 37 catches for 515 yards and zero touchdowns in just 11 games. Simply put, the Patriots need better pass-catchers behind TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Julian Edelman.

Patriots | Tom Brady pressured in loss    Sun Jan 24, 07:44 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was hit a season-high 23 times in a 20-18 loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24. Entering the game, Brady hadn't been hit more than 12 times.

Footballguys view: The amount of pressure Brady was under was simply astounding. The Broncos were not afraid of blitzing Brady even though he gets rid of the football quickly. Brady passed for over 300 yards in the losing effort.

Patriots | Tom Brady tops 300 yards    Sun Jan 24, 07:12 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 27 of his 56 pass attempts for 310 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions in a 20-18 loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Brady is only the second quarterback this year to toss for over 300 yards against the Broncos defense (Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger did it twice). He stood strong against a fierce pass rush and did the most he could do. Brady was under duress for most of the game and fought valiantly to the end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski big in loss    Sun Jan 24, 07:06 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski finished with eight catches for a game-high 144 yards and a touchdown in a 20-18 loss to the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: The Broncos struggle against the tight end position, and Gronkowski is arguably the best in the game at that spot. It's no surprise that he was able to come through for the Patriots.

Patriots | Three key Patriots active Sunday    Sun Jan 24, 01:48 PM

New England Patriots WRs Julian Edelman (foot) and Danny Amendola (knee) and TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) are all officially active for the AFC Championship against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Edelman and Gronkowski should get the biggest share of the workload against the Broncos.

Patriots | Jamie Collins expected to play    Sat Jan 23, 01:16 PM

Patriots | LaAdrian Waddle, Tre Jackson out    Sat Jan 23, 10:51 AM

New England Patriots OT LaAdrian Waddle (shoulder) and OG Tre Jackson (knee) have been ruled out for the AFC Championship game against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Great, just what the Patriots needed....offensive line troubles as they're set to face off against a ferocious Broncos defense.

Patriots | Tom Brady struggled against four-man rush    Fri Jan 22, 06:07 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady had a QBR of 4.1 when he was pressured by a four-man or fewer pass rush in 2015, which ranked 28th among 35 qualifying passers. Nineteen% of Brady's dropbacks this year ended with him being pressured without a blitz this year, which was the ninth-highest percentage in football. However, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Wade Phillips loves to bring extra rushers.

Footballguys view: The Broncos sent extra blitzers (five or more) after the quarterback on 41.7 percent of opponent's dropbacks in 2015. That's the 4th-highest rate in the league. The Broncos were successful creating pressure without blitzing, too, as they allowed an opponent's QBR of just 8.7 in those situations this year. They also created pressure in those situations 19.2% of opposing team dropbacks, which ranked sixth in the league.

New England Patriots WRs Danny Amendola (knee) and Julian Edelman (foot) and TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) were limited in practice all week and are questionable to face the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: We see all three playing for the Patriots. Edelman and Gronkowski are Tom Brady's favorite targets, and they should be able to move the ball against a tough Broncos defense.

Patriots | Julian Edelman likes playoffs    Fri Jan 22, 12:19 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman has the most targets, catches and receiving yards in the playoffs since the start of the 2013 postseason.

Footballguys view: The Broncos defense is phenomenal, but even they should have difficulty slowing Edelman down. Tom Brady will get rid of the ball quickly to avoid the pass-rushers for the Broncos, and Edelman will likely be his primary target.

Patriots | Danny Amendola fined    Fri Jan 22, 08:21 AM

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski streaking in playoffs    Fri Jan 22, 12:16 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's eight postseason touchdowns are a record for a tight end, and he has caught a touchdown in four straight postseason games.

Footballguys view: He should have another touchdown (or two) against the Broncos on Sunday. The Broncos defense is the best in the league, but they have historically been weak against the tight end.

  Patriots | Dont'a Hightower the X-factor?    Thu Jan 21, 06:50 PM

The Denver Broncos were only able to run for 46 yards and no touchdowns on 16 carries with New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower in the game in their Week 12 matchup. After Hightower left due to an injury, Broncos RBs C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman piled up 133 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. LB Jamie Collins also missed that game.

Footballguys view: We'll see how the backfield does with Hightower in the game this week but our own Cecil Lammey recently wrote about how Anderson has to be the key if the Broncos are to have a shot at the Super Bowl this year. He will split carries with Ronnie Hillman, but we like Anderson better and have him right behind bell cow backs David Johnson and Jonathan Stewart.

Patriots | Tom Brady, Brandon LaFell practice    Thu Jan 21, 05:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) and WR Brandon LaFell (foot) both practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 21.

Footballguys view: LaFell is no more than an upside/Hail Mary type play, but Brady should do well even against a tough Broncos defense. We wouldn't be too scared of playing him in daily contests this weekend.

Patriots | Three Patriots limited    Thu Jan 21, 05:26 PM

New England Patriots WRs Danny Amendola (knee) and Julian Edelman (foot) and TE Rob Gronkowski (knee, back) were all limited in practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 21.

Footballguys view: All three will play this weekend. You can bet on that. The plays will be Gronkowski (of course) followed by Edelman with Amendola no more than a high ceiling-low floor option on the cheap.

Patriots | Tom Brady has quick release    Thu Jan 21, 02:17 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady averaged 2.8 seconds from snap to throw during the regular season.

Footballguys view: His offensive line is a bit of a mess so he kind of has to if he wants to survive the Broncos pass rush. With Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman back, Brady has as many weapons as he needs to challenge the defense. He should do fine though, and we wouldn't be terribly worried if we had him in daily fantasy.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski has owned Denver    Wed Jan 20, 07:12 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has 40 catches for 516 yards and six touchdowns in six games against the Denver Broncos going back to 2011, including six catches for 88 yards and a score in Week 12 this year.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is a problem for most every team in the NFL, and the Broncos are no different. However, the Broncos do struggle against good tight ends...and Gronkowski is great. In order for the Patriots to win, they'll likely target Gronkowksi early and often.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski good after contact    Wed Jan 20, 12:15 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski has totaled 1,198 receiving yards after first contact since first joining the league in 2010 and including the playoffs, which is the most of any player in the NFL during that span, according to ESPN Stats and Information. He has averaged 4.0 yards after first contact this year, becoming the first player to do so in a season in seven years that ESPN Stats and Information has measured the statistic. Gronkowski had two touchdowns in the divisional round, and his eight postseason touchdowns are the most in history by a tight end.

Patriots | James White pricey per touch    Tue Jan 19, 11:11 PM

New England Patriots RB James White posted one carry for five yards and two receptions for 39 yards on three targets last weekend against the Kansas City Chiefs, and now he'll face the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: White could catch some passes or pick up yards on draw plays against the Broncos. It's Football 101...use the change-of-pace back to attack an aggressive defense in space. We'll see if it actually comes to fruition on Sunday. The Patriots would be happy to barely run the ball if they don't feel the ground game is going to be effective.

Patriots | Several New England WRs could shine    Tue Jan 19, 11:10 PM

New England Patriots WRs Danny Amendola, Keshawn Martin and Brandon LaFell each recorded at least two receptions last weekend in the win over the Kansas City Chiefs, but their production combined did not come close to that of WR Julian Edelman or TE Rob Gronkowski. Now they move on to face the Denver Broncos Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Just HOW could they shine? The Broncos defense boasts two of the best corners in the game with Aqib Talib and Chris Harris Jr. roaming in the secondary. We feel the Patriots will use mostly Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman to attack the Broncos defense.

Patriots | Julian Edelman readies for Denver    Tue Jan 19, 11:10 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman posted 10 grabs for 100 yards in the win over the Kansas City Chiefs last week, now he will set his sights on the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: Edelman can be used effectively on underneath routes. The Broncos are good tacklers on defense and can limit his run-after-the-catch production.

Patriots | Steven Jackson to play key role?    Tue Jan 19, 11:06 PM

New England Patriots RB Steven Jackson ran six times for a team-high 16 yards in last week's win over the Kansas City Chiefs, and now he'll face the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24.

Footballguys view: We're not betting on Jackson doing much of anything against the Broncos on Sunday. The veteran back looks old and stiff carrying the ball, and going up against Denver is an incredibly tough matchup for a player who is no longer his old self.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski might excel Sun.    Tue Jan 19, 11:06 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski will meet the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24. While the Broncos ranked No. 1 against the pass, allowing just 199.6 pass yards per game, they ranked 21st in the NFL against opposing tight ends by giving up 76 receptions, 54.9 yards per game and six total touchdowns.

Footballguys view: There's no 'might' about it. Gronkowski should be the Patriots leading receiver against the Broncos. He's the best tight end in the game, and the Broncos are historically weak against the position. It's not rocket science here; Gronk will smash on Sunday.

Patriots | Tom Brady faces tough matchup    Tue Jan 19, 11:06 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will square off against the Denver Broncos in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24. The Broncos led the NFL in passing defense in the regular season, allowing just 199.6 yards per game, and they were tied for the least amount of pass plays of 40 or more yards allowed (five).

Footballguys view: In other news; water is wet. Brady will be ready for the challenge. His quick passes and hurry-up offense may be the Broncos defense Kryptonite.
