Patriots | Dane Fletcher returns    Wed May 27, 02:29 AM

Free-agent LB Dane Fletcher (Buccaneers) has returned to the New England Patriots on a one-year contract.

Footballguys view: The Patriots get more linebacker depth here after signing Brandon Spikes last week. Fletcher was mostly a special teams contributor when he was with the Patriots earlier in his career, but last year he started four games at inside linebacker for the Bucs.

Patriots | Sign Zach D'Orazio    Tue May 26, 02:48 PM

Former Akron WR Zach D'Orazio signed an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Tuesday, May 26.

Footballguys view: The move gives the Patriots 11 wide receivers on the current roster. D'Orazio has good size, measuring in at 6'2" 217 pounds. He caught 119 passes for 1,422 yards and five touchdowns for Akron from 2012 through 2014. Last season, D'Orazio had 62 catches for 658 receiving yards and one receiving touchdown.

Patriots | Commissioner to hear Tom Brady's appeal    Fri May 22, 04:26 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will have the appeal of his four-game suspension heard by commissioner Roger Goodell after the NFL rejected a motion by the NFL Players Association to have Goodell remove himself from the appeal, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Goodell may not eliminate Brady's suspension (as some have speculated), but we think a reduction is in order. Dropping the punishment to two games sounds about right. We'll see what Goodell comes up with in the near future.

Patriots | No date for Tom Brady's appeal    Fri May 22, 03:30 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal of his four-game suspension has not been scheduled at this time.

Footballguys view: We'll know soon enough. Right now, fantasy owners should be expecting at least a two-game ban for the superstar quarterback.

Patriots | Brandon Spikes signed    Thu May 21, 11:05 AM

Free-agent LB Brandon Spikes (Bills) has re-signed with the New England Patriots on a one-year deal worth up to $2 million through on-field incentives.

Footballguys view: He'll rotate in for the Patriots, but ultimately his overall impact will likely be small, assuming his stays on the roster past training camp.

Patriots | Commissioner to hear from Tom Brady    Wed May 20, 02:41 PM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal will not be affected by the team's decision to accept their sanctions. Commissioner Roger Goodell said he wants to hear from Brady directly in regards to the deflation of footballs in the AFC Championship.

Footballguys view: The league seems very open to a reduction of Brady's suspension...if they get a little cooperation from the superstar quarterback. This whole situation is far from over, but we'd be shocked if Brady ended up serving all four games of his suspension. Two games sounds about right, and there are some who think he's going to get the suspension completely eliminated.

Patriots | Tom Brady's appeal to continue    Tue May 19, 01:39 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will continue to appeal his four-game suspension, despite owner Robert Kraft saying the team will not appeal the discipline levied against them.

Footballguys view: The NFLPA is going to continue with Brady's appeal. The announcement about the Patriots not appealing the NFL's ruling could work in Brady's favor. There's a general feeling that Brady will not serve the entire four-game suspension. In fact, some think he will not serve any games on the suspended list. We think two games sounds about right...stay tuned.

Patriots | Devin Gardner cut    Mon May 18, 07:20 PM

New England Patriots WR Devin Gardner was waived Monday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Gardner is a big target (6'4" 215 pounds) with the wingspan to play above the rim. He's incredibly raw as a receiver and needs to get better running routes and understanding how to set up defenders before making his break. Gardner has enough raw talent to warrant getting a look somewhere else, but he's a longshot to make a final roster.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo ready to succeed?    Sun May 17, 08:41 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo's quick decision making and accuracy fit well with New England's playbook that includes quick-rhythm passes as part of the foundation, and Bucky Brooks of NFL.com believes the Patriots will continue to use the diverse aerial attack that is used when QB Tom Brady is under center when Garoppolo starts.

Footballguys view: We'll have to wait and see if Brady's suspension sticks before getting too excited about Garoppolo. He's looked good in preseason reps and limited regular season action, but we'd like to see what he looks like when teams have more film of him to study. We feel a simplified offense that leaned on the ground game would be a wiser approach with a young quarterback who used to go into a shell in college when under duress.

Patriots | Tom Brady taking part in workouts    Sun May 17, 09:45 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has not missed any of the workouts this offseason.

Footballguys view: He's only suspended for the time being. The suspension is being appealed, and we may see Brady's sentence reduced to just a couple of games or zero games. There's no need for him to be skipping workouts.

Patriots | Commissioner to hear Tom Brady's appeal    Thu May 14, 11:18 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal of his four-game suspension will be presided over by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, a league spokesman confirmed Thursday, May 14.

Footballguys view: This is a bit out of the ordinary and shows the odd nature of the NFL appeal system, where the body that handed down the original punishment decides whether it was too harsh. There is at least some chance that Brady's suspension is reduced or eliminated altogether, but the Patriots response and attempt to show up the league could hurt his chances.

Patriots | Tom Brady files appeal    Thu May 14, 03:38 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has officially appealed his four-game suspension.

Footballguys view: The question now is whether he will be able to play while his appeal is heard and whether that appeal is dealt with before Week 1. Current ADP is at the top of the sixth round, and if you cover not having him for up to the first four games, you'll get top five fantasy quarterback production the rest of the way.

Patriots | Tom Brady's ban could be overturned    Wed May 13, 09:55 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's four-game suspension could be reduced significantly, and possibly overturned, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter. Brady has put together a renowned legal team to appeal his suspension.

Footballguys view: The legal team is made up of some of the best lawyers in the country. The appeals process will take some time, and we believe his sentence could be reduced to a couple of games instead of four. Some feel this legal team could eliminate the suspension entirely....stay tuned.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo to make starts    Mon May 11, 09:37 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to start while QB Tom Brady serves his suspension for 'DeflateGate'. Brady was suspended four games by the National Football League Monday, May 11, but intends to appeal the penalty.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo looked good during the preseason last year. He's got a quick release, and Garoppolo makes good decisions with the football. Starting the regular season is much different from making plays against reserve players in August. We could see the team try to lean more on the ground game while Brady is out.

Patriots | Tom Brady will appeal    Mon May 11, 07:08 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will appeal his four-game suspension, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: Brady should appeal, but he's unlikely to get away unscathed. He has a four-game suspension currently, but an appeal could drop the penalty down to two or three games instead. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Tom Brady suspended     Mon May 11, 05:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has been suspended four games for his involvement in the deflated-football incident in the AFC Championship. In addition, the Patriots will lose their 2016 first-round pick, a 2017 fourth-round pick and will be fined $1 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The league did not show favorites here, and this penalty is larger than some expected. Brady will likely appeal the four-game suspension, and that could reduce his sentence to two or three games. With Brady out, second-year pro Jimmy Garoppolo will be the starting quarterback.

Patriots | Kyle Arrington released    Mon May 11, 10:26 AM

New England Patriots CB Kyle Arrington was released Monday, May 11, according to a source. The team left the door open for him to return.

Footballguys view: The turnover in the secondary continues for the Patriots. They will now be without their top three cornerbacks from last year - Darrelle Revis, Brandon Browner and Arrington. We could see Logan Ryan as the slot corner behind starters Malcolm Butler and Bradley Fletcher, although Arrington could return at a lower salary.

Patriots | Fred Davis agrees with New England    Mon May 11, 10:06 AM

Free-agent TE Fred Davis (Redskins) agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots Monday, May 11.

Footballguys view: Well that was quick. Davis was just reinstated by the league last week, and now he finds himself with the defending Super Bowl champs. Davis was out of the league last year after repeated violations of the substance abuse policy, a DUI and a domestic incident. It's an interesting move for the Patriots as they are jam packed at the position. Behind starter Rob Gronkowski, they have Scott Chandler, Michael Hoomanawanui and Tim Wright. Rookie A.J. Derby, a sixth-round pick, is also on the depth chart. Davis is no guarantee to make the final roster.

Patriots | Fear long suspension for Brady?    Fri May 8, 07:52 PM

Mike Giardi, from CSNNE.com, reports the New England Patriots are bracing for the worst with a possible suspension looming for quarterback Tom Brady. Sources tell Giardi the team may be bracing for a 6-8 game suspension for the superstar quarterback in the aftermath of the Wells report.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are certainly keeping close tabs on this situation. If Brady is suspended, the Patriots would turn to second-year pro Jimmy Garoppolo. This not only impacts Brady's fantasy potential, but it also adds risk to guys like Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman in leagues that draft early. We should know more about any potential suspension in the near future....stay tuned.

Patriots | Tom Brady punishment possible Friday    Fri May 8, 12:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could be subject to a ruling on potential punishment for the deflated footballs situation as early as Friday, May 8.

Footballguys view: The possible punishments being tossed about are all over the board. Anywhere from nothing to merely a fine to a one-game suspension to being suspended for half the season (and more). We'll wait to see how this shakes out, but fantasy owners need to be ready for anything when it comes to Brady.

Patriots | Tom Brady facing punishment?     Wed May 6, 01:47 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could be punished by the NFL for his involvement in the incident with the deflated footballs, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Ted Wells Report reveals text message between equipment personnel Jim McNally and John Jastremski that put Brady in a bad light. Those two are going to face discipline from the NFL, and Brady may be looking at a fine and/or suspension due to the results of this report. There's a chance we could see Jimmy Garoppollo as the Patriots starter for Week 1 if Brady is suspended for a game to begin the season.

Patriots | Alfonzo Dennard to be released    Tue May 5, 09:24 AM

New England Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard will be released Tuesday, May 5.

Footballguys view: A seventh-round pick in 2012, Dennard only started four games last season. He was inactive for nine games in 2014, and Dennard finished the season on Injured Reserve. The Patriots have now lost a combined 29 starts at cornerback this offseason with Darrelle Revis (16) and Brandon Browner (9) leaving via free agency and with Dennard (4) being released.

Patriots | Malcom Brown selected 32nd overall    Thu Apr 30, 11:31 PM

Texas DT Malcom Brown was selected 32nd overall by the New England Patriots in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: A great pick by the Patriots. Brown can replace Vince Wilfork up front on the defensive line. He's a wide-bodied mountain of a man who can stuff the run. Brown can also hustle to get some interior push on opposing quarterbacks.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo a rarity for New England    Sat Apr 25, 08:18 PM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo was drafted in the top 10 of the NFL Draft in 2008, making him one of just two players drafted in the top 10 in head coach Bill Belichick's 15 seasons with the team.

Footballguys view: Yes. A history lesson here....and that's about it. The Patriots are usually drafting at the end...or near the end...of the first round because they play deep into the playoffs most seasons.

Patriots | Nate Solder had testicular cancer    Tue Apr 21, 08:59 AM

New England Patriots OT Nate Solder was diagnosed in April 2014 with testicular cancer. He was treated and played in every game during the 2014 season. 'I was completely healthy, I'm a professional athlete. It can happen to anybody,' Solder said. 'Make sure you get yourself checked out, especially young men, because that's who it's really targeted toward.'

Footballguys view: Solder decided to share his story hoping it would inform others about the importance of early detection as April is national Testicular Cancer Awareness month.

Patriots | Bryan McBryde works out    Tue Apr 21, 07:40 AM

Connecticut DL Bryan McBryde worked out for the New England Patriots last week.

Footballguys view: McBryde wasn't overly productive during his final season with UCONN, but he did run two sub-five second 40-yard dashes at his pro day. His combination of size (305 pounds) and athleticism should make him a coveted free agent after the draft.

Patriots | Cameron Fleming may work at OG    Sun Apr 19, 09:42 AM

New England Patriots OT Cameron Fleming has been working on improving his play at guard this offseason and could see time at the position next season. Fleming said one start at guard in 2014 but injured his hand and did not return to the position.

Footballguys view: Fleming has good functional strength as a run-blocker. He's a smart player who understands what is expected of him inside.

Patriots | Todd Gurley will visit    Sat Apr 18, 03:23 AM

Georgia RB Todd Gurley wlll visit the New England Patriots in the next week.

Footballguys view: Wouldn't it be just like the Patriots to land the best back we've seen come out of college since Adrian Peterson? Gurley is a stud, there's no doubt about that and he could be a star at the pro level. A knee injury suffered last season (which checked out medically) may keep his draft stock in the teens or twenties of the first round.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower rehab going well    Thu Apr 16, 01:53 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) is doing well in his rehab from surgery in early February on his shoulder, but he's likely to miss training camp this summer with a timetable for recovery around six to seven months. Hightower is hoping that he can be ready for the start of the regular season. 'Right now, I'm doing well. The doc likes everything he's seen. I just had my checkup. I'm right on track, if not better,' Hightower said. 'I'm not sure what I'm going to be able to do as far as OTAs and training camp and all that other stuff goes. But I'm looking forward to being back.'

Footballguys view: Hightower had surgery to repair a torn labrum and while rehab is going well, he may still miss OTAs....maybe even training camp. With Jared Mayo hurt (though he may be back sooner), things are a little thin, but the Pats don't want to rush him back.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount suspended    Tue Apr 7, 04:56 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount has been suspended for the 2015 NFL regular-season opener.

Patriots | James White may receive bigger role    Sun Apr 5, 09:50 AM

New England Patriots RB James White is believed to be a candidate for the receiving running back role in the offense.

Footballguys view: That was the plan when the Patriots drafted White last year. He's a favorite of Tom Brady, and White can be counted on as a receiver out of the backfield. White is not the biggest back, but he does a good job of running intently between the tackles.

Patriots | Geremy Davis in for workout    Sun Apr 5, 02:27 AM

Connecticut WR Geremy Davis had a private workout with the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Davis is a sure-handed receiver who caught a pass in 36-straight games for the Huskies. We like his size at 6'3" 215 pounds, but Davis is a raw prospect who should be a late-round pick or priority college free agent.

Patriots | Sealver Siliga retained    Thu Apr 2, 06:27 PM

New England Patriots exclusive rights free-agent DT Sealver Siliga had his rights retained Thursday, April 2.

Footballguys view: Siliga is still in a walking boot after undergoing foot surgery last year. He's one of the top options at defensive tackle with Vince Wilfork moving on to the Texans.

Patriots | Bobby McClain works out    Tue Mar 31, 09:42 AM

Memphis CB Bobby McClain recently worked out for the New England Patriots. He is projected as a late-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: McClain has good instincts at corner, and he does a good job of getting to the ball in a hurry. A willing player in run support, McClain could develop into a nice slot corner at the pro level.

Patriots | Rolando McClain leaves without contract    Mon Mar 30, 07:44 PM

Free-agent LB Rolando McClain (Cowboys) had a positive meeting with the New England Patriots Monday, March 30, but left without a contract.

Footballguys view: McClain revamped his pro career last season with the Dallas Cowboys. They've been lowballing him so far this offseason, but this meeting with the Patriots might prompt the Cowboys to make a better offer. McClain played 606 defensive snaps in 2014, with 119 coming on third down.

Patriots | Chandler Jones had surgery    Mon Mar 30, 08:49 AM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (undisclosed) has been at Gillette Stadium for much of the offseason rehabbing from an undisclosed surgery. He has been walking with the aid of crutches.

Footballguys view: Jones missed six games last year due to a hip injury that did not require surgery. Nobody knows what he went under the knife for, but expect the Patriots to bring him back slowly as he recovers.

Patriots | Sealver Siliga had surgery    Fri Mar 27, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots DT Sealver Siliga (undisclosed) is in a walking boot after having undisclosed offseason surgery.

Footballguys view: Siliga was put on IR/Designated to Return last year with a foot injury. When he returned, Siliga was in the starting lineup next to Vince Wilfork. With Wilfork gone, Siliga could have a larger role this year. The team will ease him back in as he recovers.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower to miss several months    Thu Mar 26, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) will miss six to seven months after undergoing surgery on a torn right labrum.

Footballguys view: Hightower's availability for the beginning of the regular season could now be in jeopardy. We could see the Patriots decide to put him on the PUP list to begin the season. If that happens, Hightower would be forced to miss the first six weeks of the regular season. After that time, the Patriots would have three weeks to decide whether or not to activate Hightower or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

New England Patriots C Ryan Wendell (shoulder) is believed to have underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason and is currently recovering from the surgery.

Patriots | Chris Jones undergoes surgery    Sun Mar 22, 10:34 AM

Patriots | Robert McClain signing    Wed Mar 18, 02:33 PM

Free-agent CB Robert McClain (Falcons) announced on Twitter that he is signing an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: The Patriots continue to rebuild their secondary here after losing both Brandon Browner and Darrelle Revis in free agency. McClain has worked well as a nickel corner for the Falcons, but in New England he'll be able to compete for a starting job on the outside. He also brings special teams experience to the Patriots.

Patriots | Bradley Fletcher agrees with Pats    Wed Mar 18, 10:52 AM

Updating an earlier report, free-agent CB Bradley Fletcher (Eagles) agreed to a one-year deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 18. The deal is worth a maximum of $2.5 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have some serious work to do in their secondary after losing both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner in free agency. Fletcher was targeted often by opponents during his time with the Eagles. He's got a nose for the ball, but he'll gamble to take chances--and he'll get burned. He'll compete for a starting job with the Patriots.

Free-agent CB Terence Newman (Bengals) is scheduled to visit with the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 17.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need to rebuild their secondary after the departure of both Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner. Newman could be a short-term answer. The veteran corner has started 174 career games, and he was a starter last year in Cincinnati. He has been considering retirement, but some team may decide to make an offer for veteran depth.
