Patriots | Tom Brady plans to play a while     Mon Mar 27, 04:12 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady told owner Robert Kraft that he hopes to play for six or seven more years.

Footballguys view: The Patriots were the best in the NFL last year, and they've done nothing but gotten stronger this offseason. Brady should be well protected again, and so long as he's healthy then he can play for at least a few more years.

Patriots | New England works out Tarell Basham    Sun Mar 26, 05:41 PM

Ohio DE Tarell Basham recently worked out for the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Basham has the makings of an impact pro. With long arms and strong hands, Basham finds his way to the ball quickly and can be quite disruptive when he gets there. Basham is scheme versatile and can play in a 4-3 or a 3-4 lineup. He's likely to be a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Patriots | No talks between NE, Darrelle Revis    Sat Mar 25, 10:22 AM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) has not had any contract talks with the New England Patriots at this point.

Footballguys view: Revis could go back to the Patriots, but he's going to make much less money than he used to. In fact, Revis is likely to switch from corner to safety no matter where he lands.

Patriots | Michael Floyd unlikely to return to NE    Fri Mar 24, 12:22 PM

Free-agent WR Michael Floyd (Patriots) is a 'long shot' to return to the New England Patriots after they acquired Brandin Cooks earlier this month, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The Pats have found their top WR via trade with New Orleans. Floyd has no interest on the open market at this time. Perhaps as we get closer to training camp a team like the Lions would come calling.

Patriots | Darrelle Revis heading back to Pats?    Thu Mar 23, 01:43 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) appears to be likely to be signed by the New England Patriots, according to sources. Those sources, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora, believe if Revis were to play for anyone in 2017 it would be the Patriots.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting idea. He won't get a large payday and he's a shell of himself, so how he is used is anyone's guess. We think if anyone can find a way to re-boot Revis, it's Bill Belichick and Matt Patricia.

Patriots | Tyler Gaffney waived    Mon Mar 20, 05:37 PM

New England Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney was waived Monday, March 20, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Not surprising news considering the Patriots signed Rex Burkhead last week. Burkhead joins Dion Lewis, James White and D.J. Foster as the backs currently on the Pats roster.

Patriots | De'Veon Smith meeting with New England    Sun Mar 19, 08:27 PM

Michigan RB De'Veon Smith said he is scheduled to meet with the general manager of the New England Patriots prior to his pro day.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are always on the hunt for receiving backs like Smith. He's likely to be a late-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Patriots | New England may look at Darrelle Revis    Sun Mar 19, 05:30 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) could receive interest from the New England Patriots this offseason, in the opinion of The Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: Revis isn't the same player as when he helped the Patriots win a Super Bowl in 2014. He may have to move to safety if he wants to be more than a backup with the Patriots....or any team that takes a chance on him.

Patriots | Belief Patriots will keep Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Mar 16, 06:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo may end up sticking with the team for 2017 and beyond, as there is a 'persistent belief within league circles' that they truly want to keep him. The thinking is that QB Tom Brady's 'magic number' is three more years or perhaps fewer if he wins one more Super Bowl, and that head coach Bill Belichick has decided after one year of working with him that he doesn't believe QB Jacoby Brissett will become a 'true franchise quarterback.'

Footballguys view: Assuming all that is true, we aren't shocked Brissett (a third round pick) isn't the long term answer, nor that the team likes Garoppolo enough to keep him. This means they have to pay him soon, though, and it will be interesting to see what that looks like with the cap-conscious and cap-savvy Patriots.

  Patriots | Dont'a Hightower re-signs with Pats    Wed Mar 15, 01:47 PM

Free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower (Patriots) re-signed with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 15, on a four-year deal worth $43.5 million, according to Hightower's agent, SportsTrust Advisors. He will receive $19 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: The Patriots let Hightower explore his options on the open market, and those weren't that exciting for the veteran linebacker. With the Hightower move, it's yet another sign that the best is getting even better and leaving AFC competitors in the dust this offseason.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks most successful in Superdome    Tue Mar 14, 09:51 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks played 21 games at home in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome and 21 games on the road during his first three seasons in the league with the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: While his receptions and targets were split pretty evenly, he accumulated 1,644 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns in the Superdome, compared to 1,217 yards and seven touchdowns in away contests.

Patriots | Rex Burkhead signs with Patriots    Tue Mar 14, 05:02 PM

Free-agent RB Rex Burkhead (Bengals) signed an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Tuesday, March 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Burkhead is a good change-of-pace back and receiver out of the backfield. The Patriots may give him a chance to do more as an early-down runner. We'll see how this shakes out in the preseason, but going to this team makes any skill position player one to watch closely.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower expected to stay    Mon Mar 13, 08:25 AM

Free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower (Patriots) is expected to re-sign with the New England Patriots after he left visits with the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: The Patriots let Hightower explore the open market, and the price tags weren't as high as he'd hoped. He could return to the Patriots on a fair deal, but Hightower is not going to break the bank like he wanted.

Patriots | Lawrence Guy financials    Mon Mar 13, 03:46 AM

New England Patriots DL Lawrence Guy could make $19 million over four years with his new contract. He will make a fully-guaranteed $4.9 million in 2017, but the total base value of his contract is $13.4 mllion. Guy has the chance to reach $19 million with $1.4 million of playing-time incentives each year.

Patriots | New England to lose new pick     Sat Mar 11, 11:33 PM

The New England Patriots will lose the fourth-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft acquired from the New Orleans Saints as part of the trade for WR Brandin Cooks, according to multiple reports. Part of the Patriots' punishment for the deflated balls scandal was the loss of their highest pick in the fourth round, and the pick acquired from New Orleans is No. 118 while New England's own fourth-round pick is No. 132.

Patriots | NE keeping tabs on Dont'a Hightower    Sat Mar 11, 01:05 PM

The New England Patriots are still 'very interested' in bringing back free-agent LB Dont'a Hightower, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: The Patriots let Hightower explore the open market to set his price tag. A risky move initially, it looks like that's paying off for the Pats as Hightower has not gotten much concrete interest. He could always return for a right price.

Patriots | Justin Hunter visits New England    Sat Mar 11, 10:22 AM

Free-agent WR Justin Hunter (Bills) visited the New England Patriots Friday, March 10, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hunter has always been a super athletic WR, but in his two stops (Titans, Dolphins, Bills) around the NFL he's never really flourished. He could be used as a red-zone target no matter where he lands.

Patriots | Cold weather to slow Brandin Cooks?    Fri Mar 10, 10:47 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks has caught 16 of his 20 career receiving touchdowns in warm weather stadiums and domes.

Footballguys view: Cooks played a lot of games in domes since his home field with the Saints is inside. The Patriots certainly looked at all factors surrounding Cooks, and they decided he was worth giving up some serious draft capital for.

Patriots | New England acquires Brandin Cooks    Fri Mar 10, 07:47 PM

The New England Patriots have acquired WR Brandin Cooks and a 2017 fourth-round pick from the New Orleans Saints in exchange for a 2017 first-round pick and a 2017 third round pick, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Saints were interested in CB Malcolm Butler, but he's staying with the Patriots for the time being. Coming of his second straight 1,000-yard season, Cooks gives QB Tom Brady yet another dangerous weapon. He could be a focal point of the Patriots passing game along with TE Rob Gronkowski.

Patriots | New England acquires Kony Ealy    Fri Mar 10, 03:39 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Kony Ealy was traded along with a third-round draft pick to the New England Patriots for a second-round pick Friday, March 10, according to league sources.

Footballguys view: With 14.0 sacks over three seasons, Ealy has been somewhat of a disappointment based on where he was drafted (second round). The Patriots move down eight spots (assuming these are 2017 picks) to take a chance on a pass-rusher. That sounds about right.

Free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore (Bills) agreed to terms on a five-year deal with the New England Patriots Thursday, March 9, worth $65 million, according to a source. The deal includes $40 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Expensive but potentially a very good addition for the Patriots. Gilmore has struggled at times, but we firmly believe the coaching staff in New England will find a way for him to consistently reach his potential.

Patriots | Alan Branch staying with Patriots    Thu Mar 9, 01:30 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent DT Alan Branch is re-signing to a two-year, $12 million deal, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A solid re-signing for the Patriots. Branch isn't bucking for Canton but he's a solid tackle and an important part of the New England defense. It's not a costly deal, so the Patriots get a good talent without a big pocketbook hit.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler in trade winds    Thu Mar 9, 11:49 AM

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler is being discussed in trade talks involving New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks.

Footballguys view: This doesn't seem like an equitable trade to us, though we like Butler. We do like the idea of Cooks in a Tom Brady led offense though, and if the Patriots pull this off, especially if they get Stephon Gilmore, this looks like a team reloading to repeat.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks talks heating up    Thu Mar 9, 10:42 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks is in trade talks with the New England Patriots, who are considering sending CB Malcolm Butler to New Orleans for Cooks.

Footballguys view: This seems like a bigger win for the Patriots than the Saints. Butler is a solid corner though, and New Orleans continues to have a lot of work to do on defense. We do like the thought of Cooks in a Tom Brady offense with Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman and think he could be very productive.

Patriots | Stephon Gilmore close to deal with champs    Thu Mar 9, 08:57 AM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore is closing in on a deal with the New England Patriots Thursday, March 9.

Footballguys view: That's a huge get for the Patriots if it gets closed. The team needs a top cover corner, and while Gilmore has struggled at times, he's also shown excellent coverage skills. We expect defensive coordinator Matt Patricia will get consistent excellence out of him.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett closes door on return    Wed Mar 8, 11:20 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent TE Martellus Bennett announced on his Twitter account Wednesday, March 8, he will not return to the Patriots in 2017.

Footballguys view: That would indicate a lot of interest, or at least a significant payday forthcoming. The Patriots were interested, but not at a high price. Bennett is pretty much the best of a light free-agency tight end class, so both of those things are likely.

Patriots | Dwayne Allen trade update    Wed Mar 8, 05:02 PM

Updating a previous report, the New England Patriots have acquired TE Dwayne Allen and a sixth-round draft pick from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for a fourth-round pick, according to sources.

Footballguys view: It's a strong move for the Patriots, especially since Martellus Bennett is likely to move on in free agency. Allen is a good all-purpose tight end who can excel as a blocker or receiver behind/alongside Rob Gronkowski.

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent RB Adrian Peterson has nothing brewing with the New England Patriots for now.

Impending free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) said he would 'consider' taking a team-friendly contract with the New England Patriots, according to a 'source close to Peterson.'

Footballguys view: The Patriots are poised to make another run at the Super Bowl, so it makes sense that Peterson would take a discount. If they lose LeGarrette Blount in free agency, then Peterson would be able to take his spot as the lead ball-carrier for the best team in the AFC.

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount is expected to receive an offer in free agency the team won't match, and they're believed to be prepared for it.

Footballguys view: Blount could stay in New England if he wants to take a one-year team friendly deal. If he wants more, then he's going to move on. Blount had a career year in 2016, rushing for 1,161 yards and a team record 18 touchdowns.
