Patriots | Jerod Mayo injury may help him financially    Mon Oct 20, 02:39 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) is out for the year, but his financial status may improve as a result of the injury. A total of $4.5 million of his $6.25 million base salary was guaranteed for injury only, which means he still may collect that money if the Patriots decide to move on.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski nearly goes distance    Fri Oct 17, 07:57 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski played 53 of his team's 57 offensive snaps in the Week 7 game against the New York Jets Thursday, Oct. 18. It was the first time all season he has played over 90 percent of the snaps in a game.

Patriots | Jonas Gray barely used    Fri Oct 17, 12:53 PM

New England Patriots RB Jonas Gray was the team's 'inside' runner behind RB Shane Vereen in Week 7 against the New York Jets Thursday, Oct. 16, but Gray only had three carries on the night.

Footballguys view: Gray ran pretty hot on his carries and seemed disappointed that he didn't get longer gains. Against a lighter run defense like Chicago's next week, he could break through. Of course, the team could always go back to Brandon Bolden, although Gray looks more roster-worthy than Bolden in fantasy leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady tosses three TDs    Fri Oct 17, 12:14 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 20 of his 37 pass attempts for 261 yards and three touchdowns in the team's Week 7 game Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: Brady wasn't sharp, but his receivers made plays for him, and the Jets horrendous coverage allowed for a few easy touchdowns. He is back to being a low QB1 entering his matchup against the Bears next week.

Patriots | Big game for Shane Vereen    Fri Oct 17, 12:05 AM

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen had 11 carries for 43 yards and five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns in the team's Week 7 game Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: Vereen's numbers look better than his play. He did leak through a blown coverage for a long TD to start the game, and he got open against the Jets loose zone coverage in the red zone for a second score, but the Patriots notorious change-ups at running back from week-to-week may keep him from having consistent value.

Patriots | Jonas Gray playing tonight    Thu Oct 16, 07:07 PM

New England Patriots RB Jonas Gray will be active tonight and is currently listed ahead of James White on the team's depth chart. White is inactive for the contest.

Footballguys view: Interesting move for the Patriots here. Fantasy owners need to see how these carries/touches are split between Brandon Bolden, Shane Vereen and Gray.

Patriots | Week 7 Inactives    Thu Oct 16, 07:02 PM

Patriots | Make three roster moves    Thu Oct 16, 05:06 PM

The New England Patriots placed RB Stevan Ridley (knee) and LB Jerod Mayo (knee) on Reserve/Injured and promoted OG Chris Barker to the active roster Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: This makes Shane Vereen more attractive Thursday and he should be a decent RB2, with a little upside in PPR leagues. The Jets always play the Pats tough, so there is also an element of risk, but as bad as New York has looked, Vereen should be in for a great night.

Patriots | Tom Brady listed as probable    Wed Oct 15, 04:33 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 15, and is listed as probable for Week 7.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) was limited in practice Tuesday, Oct. 14.

Footballguys view: There he is! Brady is playing on a short week, and he's dealing with this ankle injury. There have been reports coming out of New England that this ankle injury is more severe than the team is letting on. We'll see what Brady looks like against the Jets on Thursday night.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski back to full strength?    Tue Oct 14, 02:08 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) is back in full force, according to QB Tom Brady. Gronkowski played limited snaps in the first four weeks while recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, but he has emerged in the last few weeks. He had six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in Week 5 and caught seven passes for 94 yards in Week 6. Gronkowski took some big hits and showed added strength in the game against the Buffalo Bills. "He's a great option out there," Brady said. "So if they don't cover him, he usually gets it. If they put extra guys on him then it frees everybody else up. He's tough to stop. You put a safety on him, he's got size. You put a linebacker on him, he's got speed. He's been that way since he got into the NFL.'

Patriots | Tom Brady has legit injury    Tue Oct 14, 10:11 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) played Sunday, Oct. 13, through a significant injury, according to two sources. Brady rolled his ankle on the foot of one of his offensive linemen Friday, Oct. 10. Brady required a lot of therapy to be ready to play in Week 6.

Footballguys view: Just keep an eye on this folks. The Patriots are not very informative with injury situations, so we may not hear much "official" about this.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo out for the year    Mon Oct 13, 06:12 PM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (leg) will miss the rest of the season after suffering a lower right leg injury in Week 6 that sources are saying 'is bad.'

Footballguys view: For two years in a row, Mayo's season is cut short. Expect the Patriots to turn to guys like Jamie Collins or Dont'a Hightower to fill Mayo's role at inside linebacker.

Patriots | James White could become roster fixture    Mon Oct 13, 06:10 PM

New England Patriots RB James White could become a regular on the 46-man roster with the season-ending injury to RB Stevan Ridley (knee). White was active only once this year in Week 4. He's also not a similar back to Ridley at 5-foot-10, 205 pounds.

Footballguys view: We're excited about the upside and potential of White. He's an efficient runner who wastes little motion to get north and south in a hurry. White is a smaller back, but he's determined between the tackles. He is also a fine receiver out of the backfield. We'll see how he works in a backfield that is going to be without Ridley for the rest of the year.

Patriots | Brandon Bolden to be more involved?    Mon Oct 13, 06:06 PM

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden was the fill-in for RB Stevan Ridley (knee) in Week 6 as the 'big back.' Bolden has been a core special teams player this year, and something will have to give if he's to start being more of a factor at running back with Ridley out for the year. RB Jonas Gray could be promoted from the practice squad.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need a large back to wear down opponents, and that's where Bolden comes in. We'll see more touches for Bolden, Vereen and maybe even rookie James White now that Ridley is done for the season.

New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley (knee) has a torn anterior cruciate ligament and a torn medial collateral ligament, according to a source. Ridley will miss the remainder of the season.

Footballguys view: Bad times for Ridley here. Without the big back in the lineup, we could see the Patriots just turn to Tom Brady for more production like they did in Week 6. We could also see an increased role for Shane Vereen, Brandon Bolden or rookie James White.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) was limited Monday, Oct. 13. The team did not practice Monday, but was required to provide the status of injured players if they had practiced.

Footballguys view: In the 'Imagination Land' practice report, Brady would have been limited. He should be good to go--in real life--against the Jets on Thursday Night Football in Week 7.

Patriots | Tim Wright sees minute time    Mon Oct 13, 11:22 AM

New England Patriots TE Tim Wright played just 16 of 74 offensive snaps in Week 6 Sunday, Oct. 12.

Footballguys view: Wright scored a touchdown, so if you were forced to start him then you're happy with that. He's not been a big part of the game plan for the Patriots, but monitor his snap count in deeper leagues. The Patriots have a mess in the backfield right now, so they could just turn things over to Tom Brady and the air attack like they did in Week 6.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley might have torn ACL    Sun Oct 12, 05:34 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley (knee) will have an MRI Monday, Oct. 13, for the knee injury he suffered in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills. The fear is that he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: If he is healthy enough, the Patriots could call Benjarvus Green-Ellis. Shane Vereen could be a beneficiary of a long Ridley absence, but the team did not use him more after Ridley left the game. With a short week to prepare for the Jets on Thursday, they may not have time to drastically alter the gameplan. Right now the Patriots backfield doesn't look too promising for fantasy.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski fights through pain    Sun Oct 12, 05:26 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (forearm) fought through in a very physical game in Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills. He was injured in the third quarter, and assisted to the sidelines by trainers, but was able to return. He also had his forearm brace replaced during the game. He finished with seven receptions for 94 yards, and also had a touchdown negated by penalty.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski's number of snaps each week is trending in the right direction, and he survived a play and reaction that made owners hold their collective breath today. Expect a big game Thursday night against the Jets defense that allowed two scores to Julius Thomas today.

Patriots | Stevan Ridley injured    Sun Oct 12, 03:41 PM

New England Patriots RB Stevan Ridley (knee) suffered a knee injury in the team's Week 6 game and will not return.

Patriots | Dan Connolly suffers injury    Sun Oct 12, 02:14 PM

New England Patriots OG Dan Connolly (head) suffered a head injury during the team's Week 6 game and is considered questionable to return.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo carted off    Sun Oct 12, 02:02 PM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (undisclosed) is being carted off the field after suffering an undisclosed injury during the team's Week 6 game.

Footballguys view: Mayo's injury seemed serious and he slammed his helmet down after getting hurt. The epidemic of injuries to top linebackers has been never-ending since Sean Lee went down in the offseason, creating a real shortage of reliable options in IDP leagues this year.

Patriots | Tom Brady expected to go    Sat Oct 11, 07:23 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) is expected to play in Week 6 Sunday, Oct. 12.

Patriots | Tom Brady not wearing boot    Sat Oct 11, 02:25 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) traveled to Buffalo with the team and was not wearing a walking boot Saturday, Oct. 11.

Footballguys view: As we expected, Tom Terrific is, well maybe not terrific, but he's fine and will play. He's been struggling overall, and last week was the first time he lived up to his QB1 status. Given the inconsistency he's a QB2 for us this week, even against a Buffalo defense which gives up yards.

Patriots | Tom Brady tries to extend TD streak    Sat Oct 11, 12:48 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (calf) will meet the Buffalo Bills in Week 6, assuming he is active. Officially, he is questionable for the game. He has thrown at least one touchdown pass in 21 straight starts against the Bills, and he has two or more touchdown passes in seven of the past eight against Buffalo, and 18 of the previous 21 meetings.

Footballguys view: Brady has been uninspiring this fantasy season and the nagging injury is a concern though ProFootballTalk.com reported Saturday that one league source said it was "just Bill being Bill" meaning he's just trying to get into the Bills' heads. Regardless, we expect Brady to play though we see him as a low-end QB1 at best.

Patriots | Want to grow Tim Wright's role    Fri Oct 10, 10:05 PM

New England Patriots TE Tim Wright took on a bigger role in the pass game in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and the team wants to continue to increase Wright's role.

Footballguys view: Wright isn't worth more than a desperation start right now, but he's worth an add in deep leagues and TE premium leagues at least, and he could help Tom Brady's stock bounce back.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski sees increased snaps    Fri Oct 10, 10:04 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski played 23 more snaps in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals than he had in any game all season. The takeaway is that Gronkowski finally appears to be rounding into his pre-injury form.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is ready to take over and that could make Tom Brady into a viable fantasy QB again.

Footballguys view: Chances are Brady isn't your starter, but if he is you shouldn't get too worried - yet. Have a viable backup on your roster and make sure to check in on Sunday morning. The Patriots are notorious for being hard to decipher via their injury report listings.

Footballguys view: There's little or no rift between Brady and Belichick. Do things get heated from time to time? Certainly. Both are hyper competitive individuals who just want to win. At the end of the day, we can't imagine Brady playing anywhere else.

Patriots | Brandon LaFell the top option outside    Mon Oct 6, 06:23 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell played a team-high 77 out of 84 offensive snaps in Week 5 against the Cincinnati Bengals, and he's clearly now the top outside receiving option for the team. WR Danny Amendola (20 out of 84 snaps) wasn't used much because the Patriots didn't use many three-receiver sets.

Footballguys view: LaFell needs to try a little harder when he's initially covered. Last night, there were times when LaFell was covered well at the beginning of the route but with a little more effort at the stem he could've gotten open--and Brady was targeting him. LaFell has never been a great receiver, even dating back to his days in college at LSU. He's an inconsistent WR4/flex option each week.
