Southern Methodist WR James Proche reportedly had scouts from the New England Patriots 'gushing' over him during Senior Bowl practice Tuesday, Jan. 21, according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline.

Footballguys view: Proche is a sure-handed slot receiver...so it makes sense the Patriots would be raving about him. We could see him as a mid-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

Patriots | Julian Edelman has surgery    Tue Jan 21, 01:18 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (shoulder) had a minor shoulder surgery last week, but he's expected to be ready for the offseason program.

Footballguys view: This shoulder injury really bothered Edelman down the stretch even though he was able to play in all 16 games in 2019. Fantasy GMs will lock Edelman down as a WR2 in PPR leagues in 2020. We'll be interested to see what quarterback is throwing him passes next season.

Patriots | Tom Brady expected to test free agency waters    Sun Jan 19, 11:46 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady appears unlikely to agree to a new contract with the team before free agency begins in mid-March, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: Brady is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins as he cannot be franchise-tagged by the Patriots. We've seen it before with guys like Joe Montana and Peyton Manning, so Brady may just be the next superstar quarterback to change teams late in his career. He is expected to take a methodical approach to determine where he will play next season, since this is the first time in his career that he will be eligible for free agency.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham focused on himself    Sat Jan 18, 09:37 PM

New England Patriots QB Jarrett Stidham said he isn't worrying about impending free-agent QB Tom Brady's future with the team. 'Right now, I can't really think too much about all of that,' Stidham said. 'I have to worry about what I need to do to prepare to enhance my game, to learn as much as I possibly can. That's the biggest thing I've focused on, making a big stride from Year 1 to Year 2.'

Footballguys view: Stidham is an interesting young quarterback who the Patriots added as a fourth-round pick out of Auburn in the 2019 NFL draft. He has good tools as a passer and plays with high football intelligence. We don't think the Patriots just hand him the job if they lose Tom Brady in free agency, but Stidham might be in the mix to replace Brady.

Patriots | Phillip Dorsett unlikely to return    Mon Jan 13, 12:43 AM

New England Patriots WR Phillip Dorsett will likely depart in free agency during the offseason, in the opinion of ESPN's Mike Reiss, who notes that Dorsett's role as a receiver decreased as the season wore on.

Footballguys view: Dorsett has been a bust of a first round pick and a very limited return on Jacoby Brissett in a trade. He'll likely be a fourth or fifth receiver wherever he ends up.

Patriots | Jamie Collins' second tenure ending?    Mon Jan 13, 12:40 AM

Patriots | Julian Edelman played injured most of 2019    Sun Jan 12, 02:23 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (rib) played most of 2019 season with a partially torn rib cartilage, according to sources. Edelman suffered the injury during the Week 3 game but did not miss any time.

Footballguys view: Edelman is certainly tough as rib injuries often come down to how much pain one can tolerate. He is slated to have offseason knee surgery after dealing with a banged up knee in 2019 too.

Patriots | Julian Edelman will undergo surgeries    Fri Jan 10, 04:46 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (knee, shoulder) will undergo surgeries on his knee and shoulder this offseason, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Edelman is under contract through the 2021 season but the future is unclear for the Patriots at the quarterback position. If Tom Brady moves on then it will be interesting to see what kind of chemistry Edelman can establish with a new quarterback. Either way, Fantasy GMs will be considering Edelman his normal WR2 in PPR formats.

Of that group, only Rice's 1,848 receiving yards topped Edelman's 1,117.

Patriots | Tom Brady not done    Wed Jan 8, 09:41 AM

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady hinted on his Instagram that he wasn't ready to retire. 'In both life and football, failure is inevitable. You don't always win. You can, however, learn from that failure, pick yourself up with great enthusiasm, and place yourself in the arena again. And that's right where you will find me. Because I know I still have more to prove,' Brady wrote.

Footballguys view: Brady wants to play until he's 45-years old and he's 42 right now (turning 43 later this year). He's going to be a free agent and cannot be franchise-tagged by the Patriots. There is a chance we see him playing elsewhere in 2020, but one thing seems certain -- Brady will keep playing next season.

Patriots | Tom Brady played with injury    Mon Jan 6, 03:52 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (foot) played in the Wild Card playoff game despite suffering a foot injury at some point in December.

Footballguys view: Brady didn't look like himself in the Wild Card game, and perhaps this foot issue has something to do with it. He's an unrestricted free agent in 2020 and his time with the Patriots may be coming to a close.

Patriots | Tom Brady could leave New England    Mon Jan 6, 11:03 AM

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady returning to the Patriots is far from a guarantee, according to ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

Footballguys view: Brady is set to be an unrestricted free agent later this year and he has no plans of retiring. He cannot be franchise-tagged by the Patriots so barring a new deal with New England, Brady will be on the open market. Many are having fun speculating on where Brady could end up with the Chargers or the Raiders perhaps being the most popular potential destinations for the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Patriots | Benjamin Watson calls it a career    Mon Jan 6, 01:41 AM

Footballguys view: Watson was a first-round pick for the Patriots coming out of Georgia back in 2004. During his 15-year career, Watson snared 547 passes for 6060 yards and 44 touchdowns. He was never really a star at the position but he was a solid player for years with three-down ability in stops with the Patriots, Saints, Browns and Ravens.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said retirement is 'pretty unlikely' following a loss to the Tennessee Titans in the Wild Card round Saturday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: Brady wants to play until he's 45-years old and he turns 43 later this year. He is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason and he cannot be franchise tagged by the Patriots. If he does continue playing, it may not be with the Pats. It's going to be incredibly odd if he ends up with another team in 2020.

Patriots | Week 17 final stats for Patriots    Sun Dec 29, 04:17 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 16-of-29 passes for 221 yards, two touchdowns and one interception in an upset loss at home to the Miami Dolphins. RB Sony Michel led the way with 74 rushing yards on 18 attempts while scoring a touchdown, with RB Rex Burkhead adding 48 yards on six carries. WR Phillip Dorsett had a team-high 50 yards on one grab with four targets, while LB/FB Elandon Roberts had a 38-yard touchdown on his only touch. RB James White also added a score while finishing with three catches for 33 yards, and WR Julian Edelman managed three grabs for 26 yards on seven targets. WR N'Keal Harry also had three catches for 29 yards on seven targets while running once for nine yards.

Footballguys view: The Patriots offense continued to disappoint, coming up short in a game against one of the worst defenses in the league. Michel was serviceable for fantasy today and that's about it as linebacker/fullback Elandon Roberts caught one of the two Brady touchdowns. The Patriots fall to the third seed and will have to play next week and both Brady and the offense look mortal, and of course talk of Josh McDaniels as a head coaching prospect will be heard even though this was arguably the biggest struggle of his Patriots career.
