Patriots | Jabaal Sheard out 2-4 weeks    Tue Aug 23, 12:28 PM

New England Patriots DE Jabaal Sheard (knee) will be out two to four weeks with a sprained medial collateral ligament.

Footballguys view: He should be ready by the time the regular season starts, but that's not a given. Sheard is an important player on a defense that has lost talent due to free agency and injury. We'll see if he can make it back for the season opener.

Patriots | Donald Brown released    Tue Aug 23, 09:24 AM

New England Patriots RB Donald Brown was released Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: Brown was out for much of training camp due to an undisclosed injury. Now that Brown's been bounced, Tyler Gaffney has a better chance of making the 53-man roster.

Patriots | Tom Brady returns to practice    Tue Aug 23, 08:41 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 23, after two days of excused absences for non-injury related reasons.

Footballguys view: Where was Tom Brady? The world may never know. He's back and this non-story goes back to being a non-story.

Patriots | Logan Ryan OK for contact    Mon Aug 22, 07:16 PM

New England Patriots CB Logan Ryan (undisclosed) was not wearing his red, non-contact jersey Monday, Aug. 22, for the first time since training camp began.

Patriots | Danny Amendola moving well    Mon Aug 22, 07:12 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola (ankle, knee) appears to be moving well despite remaining on the Physically Unable to Perform list. He did warm up with teammates in practice Monday, Aug. 22, but he was not in full pads.

Footballguys view: A good sign for Amendola. They will continue to ease him back into action. The Patriots passing game can be quite fantasy relevant, but with so many weapons around QB Tom Brady we just don't see a lot of points in the future for Amendola.

Patriots | Jabaal Sheard remains sidelined    Mon Aug 22, 07:04 PM

New England Patriots DE Jabaal Sheard (knee) has been sidelined since the Patriots' preseason opener due to a knee injury and did not practice Monday, Aug. 22. Sheard did say he is feeling OK.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski still out    Mon Aug 22, 06:56 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) has not practiced since Monday, Aug. 15, although he does not appear to be dealing with a serious ailment.

Footballguys view: It's not serious, but we haven't seen him on the practice field in some time. Gronkowski should be ready for the start of the regular season, and he's once again a TE1 you can consider early in your draft.

Patriots | Sebastian Vollmer to IR    Mon Aug 22, 08:16 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots OT Sebastian Vollmer (hip, shoulder) is headed to the Reserve/Injured list due to recovery from shoulder surgery and a nagging hip injury.

Footballguys view: Vollmer would be eligible to return after Week 6. The Patriots would have a three-week window to determine whether or not to activate Vollmer or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve. Marcus Cannon is the next man up at right tackle.

Patriots | Cedric Thompson released    Mon Aug 22, 08:10 AM

New England Patriots SS Cedric Thompson was released Sunday, Aug. 21, according to his agency.

Patriots | James White thrives as receiver    Sun Aug 21, 03:02 PM

New England Patriots RB James White was 18th among running backs last season with 54 targets despite playing in just 12 games. He caught 40 passes for 410 yards and four touchdowns.

Footballguys view: White was a fantasy RB1 in PPR leagues last year after Lewis went out, but Julian Edelman was also sidelined and the team did not have a viable second tight end in the passing game. He's still at least worth a second half of the draft pick, and it won't be surprising if White is a startable PPR running with the Patriots early season schedule against stout fronts like Arizona, Miami, Houston, and Buffalo.

Patriots | Dion Lewis expected to miss two months    Sun Aug 21, 01:52 PM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) is expected to miss two months because of his second knee surgery and likely will start the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Lewis could play a role down the stretch and we know that on a per touch basis, he is highly productive and efficient. He's worth a later pick in deep leagues where you can stash him, but in short bench leagues, it is difficult to justify carrying Lewis for two months and forgoing multiple waiver wire opportunities.

Patriots | Sebastian Vollmer injury update    Sun Aug 21, 01:25 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots OT Sebastian Vollmer (hip) has not been able to practice because of a nagging hip injury, according to a source. Vollmer could start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list or could be placed on the Reserve/Injured list.

Patriots | Dion Lewis may play in 2016    Sun Aug 21, 01:04 PM

Patriots | Shaquille Mason to miss time    Sun Aug 21, 12:54 PM

New England Patriots OG Shaquille Mason (hand) is dealing with a broken hand and there is no timetable for his return at this point, according to a source.

Patriots | Sebastian Vollmer may go on IR    Sun Aug 21, 12:51 PM

New England Patriots OT Sebastian Vollmer (undisclosed) likely will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source. Vollmer started training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: The Patriots offense struggled down the stretch when they lost key offensive linemen and skill players, including Vollmer. Marcus Cannon is likely the next man up at right tackle, with Ladarius Waddle as the swing tackle, although Waddle could push Cannon to start.

Patriots | Dion Lewis needs another surgery    Sun Aug 21, 12:42 PM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) will need to undergo another surgery on his knee, according to a source. There is no timetable for his return. Lewis originally tore his anterior cruciate ligament in November.

Patriots | Dion Lewis may start on PUP list    Sun Aug 21, 11:08 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) could start the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list if he is not able to participate in practice this week, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Lewis is doing well in his recovery but has not practiced since the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Reiss is the most plugged-in Patriots beat writer, so this is concerning to say the least. Where past reports felt like speculation, this is a sure sign that the PUP is play for Lewis. We still don't know if he had a setback, and the explanation of trying to preserve him for the stretch run is also valid. Lewis will drop at least a round or two on most boards in the wake of this news, and if he doesn't practice next week, it is time for a steeper drop.

Patriots | A.J. Derby fighting for spot    Fri Aug 19, 05:01 PM

New England Patriots TE A.J. Derby is competing with TE Clay Harbor for the No. 3 tight end job and has been more consistent than Harbor since training camp started. Derby made two difficult receptions during the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 18.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount battling Tyler Gaffney?    Fri Aug 19, 01:42 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount is 'likely' battling RB Tyler Gaffney the club's final running back spot. RBs Dion Lewis and James White 'appear to be locked in' as the receiving running backs, while RB Brandon Bolden 'figures' to have a spot on the roster thanks to his role on special teams. Blount and Gaffney are competing for the 'between-the-tackles kind of role.'

Footballguys view: Blount has to be in the lead with his proven track record and performance in Week 2 of the preseason. He was more successful in short yardage, and the team knows he can hold up over the course of a game and a season. Gaffney could easily catch on elsewhere after a strong summer in his own right.

Patriots | Terrance Knighton on outside looking in?    Fri Aug 19, 01:22 PM

New England Patriots DT Terrance Knighton is starting to look like he's 'on the outside looking in' for a roster spot. There has been a 'surprising lack of hold at the point of attack,' along with little movement.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount runs over Chicago    Thu Aug 18, 11:22 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount had 11 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown in a 23-22 preseason win over the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: The Bears defense is a work in progress, but it was good to see Blount dominate. There is mystery surrounding Dion Lewis as he has yet to practice in training camp. Blount could get quite the hefty workload as the season begins with QB Tom Brady suspended. His current ADP is RB46 (11.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | A.J. Derby shines against Chicago    Thu Aug 18, 11:09 PM

New England Patriots WR A.J. Derby had six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in a 23-22 preseason win over the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: Derby is a second-year TE out of Arkansas. He was hurt in the preseason last year and didn't play in the regular season. Keep an eye on him in dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady's agent talks thumb injury    Thu Aug 18, 10:20 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (thumb) will be 'okay in time,' according to his agent, Don Yee.

Footballguys view: This incident (ScissorGate?) sounds minor. An unfortunate accident for Brady, but he's suspended the first four games and should be more than ready by the time he returns in Week 5.

Patriots | Solid line for Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Aug 18, 10:01 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo completed 16 of his 21 passes for 181 yards and a touchdown against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: This was a good night for the young QB, but fantasy owners need to realize the Bears defense is horrible. They made Broncos QB Mark Sanchez look like Slinging Sammy Baugh last week.

Patriots | Tom Brady slices right thumb    Thu Aug 18, 08:49 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (thumb) sliced his right thumb with a pair of scissors prior to the club's preseason game Thursday, August 18, against the Chicago Bears. Brady was trying to pry something from the bottom of his cleat prior to taking the field and sustained the cut. It's not known whether or not he needed stitches but he was seen leaving the stadium in regular clothes.

Footballguys view: Well, at least we don't have to worry about him missing Week 1, since he's suspended. Still, a fairly silly way to miss a game. Then again, could this have been a little chicanery on the part of the Patriots? We'll never know. Jimmy Garropolo and Jacoby Brissett will get the work instead.

Patriots | Tom Brady not on the field    Thu Aug 18, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has not been spotted on the field prior to the team's preseason game Thursday, August 18, against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: We really didn't expect Brady to play Thursday night. Jimmy Garoppolo will start and get most of the reps as the Patriots work to get him into game shape for a tough Week 1 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Patriots | Alan Branch suspended by team    Thu Aug 18, 06:22 PM

New England Patriots DT Alan Branch has been suspended by the team for 'a few days' for violating team rules.

Footballguys view: A team-implemented ban may only be for a short period of time...and it may not extend into the regular season. Details are difficult to come by (of course -- it's the Patriots), but we should know more in the future.

Patriots | Plenty of action for Martellus Bennett?     Thu Aug 18, 05:45 PM

New England Patriots TEs Martellus Bennett and Rob Gronkowski could be on the field together for up to 80% of the Patriots' plays, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. Head coach Bill Belichick views the tight ends as interchangeable and believes they can cause problems for opposing defenses when they're on the field at the same time.

Footballguys view: Adding Bennett was a great move for the Patriots this offseason. Gronkowski is still their top TE, but Bennett could easily perform like a TE2 with upside for fantasy owners. He's getting drafted at TE13 (11.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady to play Thursday    Thu Aug 18, 02:47 PM

Correcting a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will play in the preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18, according to a source.

Footballguys view: And so it seems everything we knew is wrong. What's next? Water isn't wet? We feel betrayed and hurt. Meanwhile we assume that Garoppolo will get most of the work, although the third preseason game is generally the dress rehearsal for the Week 1 starters. So Garoppolo might get only a little work, with the bulk coming next week.

Patriots | Tom Brady to sit Thursday    Thu Aug 18, 02:47 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will not play in the preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18, according to a source.

Footballguys view: They need to get Jimmy Garoppolo to get as many snaps as possible and also keep Brady healthy. We'll see if this sticks, but it makes sense to get the backups who are playing the first four games a lot of work.

Patriots | Julian Edelman expected to sit    Thu Aug 18, 02:01 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) is not expected to play in the preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18, so he can rest his injured foot.

Footballguys view: They'll be careful with him, as they have a much bigger need for him in-season than in preseason. We're a little concerned with the opening four games of the season, as he has missed time with Jimmy Garoppolo but he should be productive anyway in that time and absolutely so when Tom Brady is back. Overall, he should be a solid WR3 for fantasy GMs this season.

Patriots | Tom Brady may not play Thursday    Thu Aug 18, 01:08 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady may not play in the preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 18, and would only see limited snaps if he does play.

Footballguys view: Jimmy Garoppolo needs as many snaps as they can get him before Week 1, so this is no shock. While not a lock-down QB1 for the first four weeks of the season (especially Week 1 against Arizona), Garoppolo has some nice matchups against Miami in Week 2 and an already depleted Buffalo defense in Week 4.

Patriots | Dion Lewis remains out    Thu Aug 18, 09:02 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) has yet to practice in training camp. Lewis is nine months removed from surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament and has continued to rehab.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are just being the Patriots and being cautious. We've seen Lewis' ADP dip a bit to 49 overall and RB19, but we still have high hopes for him and think he could be a solid RB2/RB3, especially in PPR leagues. However, we'll be more optimistic about his potential if/when he's back on the practice field.

Patriots | Aaron Dobson, Keshawn Martin battling    Thu Aug 18, 12:49 AM

New England Patriots WRs Aaron Dobson and Keshawn Martin are battling for the fifth receiver spot on the depth chart. Both are considered the leading candidates heading into the second preseason game.

Footballguys view: Unless injuries strike, this is the equivalent of a walk on role as a zombie on The Walking Dead. You can say "hey look it's me" and point, but on the whole nobody will care aside from family. Unless there are copious amounts of injuries ahead of them, neither player looks like he has any fantasy value, and doesn't even get to wear cool makeup or get an arrow bolt to the dome from Norman Reedus.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell leading for X role    Thu Aug 18, 12:48 AM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell posted four grabs for 55 yards on 15 snaps in the preseason opener, and he is considered a leading candidate for the 'X' receiver role.

Footballguys view: Two notable things here. First, Mitchell is in a position where he could be pretty productive in this offense, despite a lack of productive history for rookie receivers with Bill Belichick. Second, it appears he has leapfrogged Danny Amendola, Keshawn Martin and Aaron Dobson. A deep threat may not be a tremendous asset in this offense, with Tom Brady's declining arm strength, so right now we see him as a WR5 but he certainly has enough upside to warrant watching him over the next few preseason games.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski held out of practice    Wed Aug 17, 02:40 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) was held out of practice on Tuesday, Aug. 16, after an injury scare the previous day. It's unknown if he'll return for the third day of joint practices with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Footballguys view: There's no reason to change Gronkowski's position on our boards unless this becomes a matter of weeks, not days, and costs the all-world tight end a chance to play in the preseason. In the meantime, Martellus Bennett gets to build more and more chemistry with Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo.

Patriots | Julian Edelman looks sharp    Wed Aug 17, 12:59 AM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) looked quick in his first full 11-on-11 day Tuesday, Aug. 16. He sported an impressive double move to win a one-on-one drill.

Footballguys view: Edelman was a WR1 last year before he went down, but he might take a small step back this year with the addition of Martellus Bennett, especially in the red zone. He's still an excellent WR2, but one that comes with increased injury risk based on his track record.

Patriots | Gronk's injury considered minor    Tue Aug 16, 12:47 AM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's (undisclosed) injury at practice Monday, Aug. 15, is considered minor.

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) left practice early Monday, Aug. 15, after pulling up while trying to catch a pass in 7-on-7 drills.

Footballguys view: The fantasy community can hold their breath until we hear more. The Patriots aren't exactly forthcoming with injury information, so we'll just have to stay patient and stay positive. Per ESPN's Mike Reiss, Gronkowski walked up the sidelines after taking himself out of a drill. He was then escorted off the field with trainers.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell returns to practice    Mon Aug 15, 02:12 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (elbow) returned to practice in full pads Monday, Aug. 15.

Footballguys view: Well that didn't take long. Early reports after his elbow injury speculated the rookie could miss a month. Instead, he's back out there at practice...but that doesn't mean he's good to go for the next preseason game. Mitchell is a rookie WR we have a lot of dynasty love for.
