Patriots | Tom Brady takes part in practice    Wed Oct 29, 04:51 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) fully participated in practice Wednesday, Oct. 29.

Footballguys view: Brady/Manning XVI coming up on Sunday! We cannot wait for this epic showdown. Brady will have his hands full against a dangerous Broncos pass rush.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski on hot streak    Wed Oct 29, 02:44 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski is averaging over 100 yards and one touchdown per game over the last month. QB Tom Brady has shown so much confidence in Gronkowski that he threw to a covered Gronkowski near the goal line for a touchdown in Week 8 instead of an open WR Julian Edelman.

Footballguys view: We've seen Gronkowski's snap count (currently 91 percent) rise steadily since the first two weeks (41 percent) of the season. Brady has a 129.1 passer rating over the last month with Gronkowski on the field. Gronkowski could finish as the number one fantasy TE this week against a Broncos defense that regularly surrenders big games to the position (see Antonio Gates 2 TD performance last week).

The New England Patriots acquired LB Jonathan Casillas and a sixth-round pick in exchange for a fifth-round pick Tuesday, Oct. 28, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots add some veteran depth here...and that's about it. Casillas should contribute on special teams and sub-packages on defense.

Patriots | Jonas Gray emerges    Mon Oct 27, 10:59 AM

New England Patriots RB Jonas Gray rushed 17 times for 86 yards in the Week 8 game Sunday, Oct. 26. Gray ran decisively, which is something the team has seen in the downhill runner since training camp.

Footballguys view: Oh that tricky Belichick. Shane Vereen had dominated the snap count in Week 7...the team's first game without Stevan Ridley. On Sunday, it was Gray leading the way. The power back has a skill set that most closely resembles Ridley, and he could continue to see a large role going forward...but it's Belichick we're talking about here. We're optimistic but cautious when considering Gray.

Patriots | Julian Edelman benched    Mon Oct 27, 09:39 AM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman played in just 45 of the 74 offensive snaps Sunday, Oct. 26. He played in 45 of the team's first 52 snaps, but was apparently benched. The team didn't announce an injury, but he had two drops.

Patriots | Brandon LaFell continues ascension    Mon Oct 27, 09:39 AM

New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell played in 61 of the 74 offensive snaps in Week 8 Sunday, Oct. 26. He had 11 catches for 124 yards and a touchdown in the game.

Footballguys view: LaFell has been earning the trust of Tom Brady, and he's getting rewarded with more targets on gameday. Fantasy owners need to keep this in mind when looking at LaFell as a starter. In games the Patriots control, LaFell is worth starting at least as a WR3/flex play with upside.

Patriots | Tom Brady stays red hot    Sun Oct 26, 05:12 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 30 of his 35 pass attempts for 354 yards and five touchdowns in Week 8 against the Chicago Bears. After a slow start to the season, Brady has thrown for 1,268 yards, 14 touchdowns and no interceptions over the past four games. Sunday marked the sixth time in his career he threw five or more touchdowns in a single game. His 148.4 passer rating was the eighth best of his career.

Footballguys view: Brady had one of the most efficient games in NFL history. He is at peak form heading into a showdown with Peyton Manning next week.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski left game early    Sun Oct 26, 04:12 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (dehydration) left the game early Week 8 because of dehydration and did not return.

Footballguys view: In other words, it was nothing to worry about. With three scores and plenty of Gronkian exploits in the blowout win over the Bears (he was down at the one on another play), Gronkowski's owners can feel like they have the #1 fantasy tight end from here on out.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski finds end zone    Sun Oct 26, 02:48 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski caught eight passes for 103 yards and two touchdowns in the first half of the team's Week 8 game.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski found the end zone a third time to open the second half, but then went to locker room with a member of the training staff. His owners would be just fine with this being the end of his day as a precaution.

Patriots | Tom Brady productive in first half    Sun Oct 26, 02:33 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady went 18-for-21 for 203 yards and four touchdowns in the first half of the team's Week 8 game.

Footballguys view: The Bears had their worst first half in their franchise's long and storied history. Brady and the Patriots offense is just fine heading into the second half of the season.

Patriots | Chandler Jones will not need surgery    Sun Oct 26, 12:08 PM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (hip) will not need surgery on his injured hip but will need at least four weeks to allow the injury to heal, according to a source. Jones does not have a torn labrum, and the team expects him to play in later weeks of the season.

Footballguys view: The Patriots defense should be very vulnerable while Jones is out, so look for more high-scoring games, which could benefit Shane Vereen in the ever-shifting Patriots backfield.

Patriots | Week 8 Inactives    Sun Oct 26, 11:37 AM

The New England Patriots have declared WR Aaron Dobson, CB Alfonzo Dennard, OT Cameron Fleming, DL Chandler Jones, OG Chris Barker, OT Jordan Devey, FS Nate Ebner inactive for Week 8.

Footballguys view: Dobson has completely fallen out of favor with the Patriots. He'll likely have to catch on with another team if he is goign to realize any of his second-round draft pick potential.

Patriots | Chandler Jones out for the year?    Sat Oct 25, 02:09 PM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (hip) could be done for the season with a hip injury he suffered in Week 7. Jones will reportedly miss at least six weeks.

Footballguys view: This is not the news Patriots fans wanted to read. Jones was a big part of the team's pass rush, and missing him will have a negative impact on the entire defense.

Patriots | Alan Branch signing still on hold    Sat Oct 25, 04:55 AM

Patriots | Two signed    Fri Oct 24, 05:58 PM

The New England Patriots signed free-agent WR Jonathan Krause (Browns) and LB Ja'Gared Davis (Patriots) to their practice squad Friday, Oct. 24.

Patriots | Friday injury report    Fri Oct 24, 05:17 PM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (hip) did not participate in practice Friday, Oct. 24, and has been ruled out for Week 8. OG Dan Connolly (concussion), DE Dominique Easley (knee, shoulder), FS Nate Ebner (finger), OT Cameron Fleming (finger), WR Matthew Slater (shoulder) and C Bryan Stork (concussion) were limited during practice and are listed as questionable. CB Brandon Browner (ankle), LB Jamie Collins (thigh), LB Dont'a Hightower (knee) and FS Devin McCourty (rib) fully participated in practice and are listed as probable.

Footballguys view: Jones being out is a massive blow to a defense that already lost lynchpin inside linebacker Jared Mayo for the season. They could be a lot of shootouts in the next few weeks with their front seven lacking its two best players for at least a month.

Patriots | Shane Vereen questionable    Fri Oct 24, 05:11 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen (illness) is listed as questionable for Week 8.

Footballguys view: Vereen is dealing with an illness, so his status may depend on his body's ability to fight off his malady in time for Sunday's game. Rookie James White would be poised to play a larger role along with practice call-up Jonas Gray if Vereen is out. Special teamer Brandon Bolden would also figure in, but Gray would likely be the primary runner and White the primary receiving back if Vereen is out.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has thrown just two interceptions this year, and both came in the Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Brady went 7-of-32 on passes thrown at least 15 yards downfield in his first 4 games this season. Since then he has gone 17-of-25, completing at least 5 attempts in each game.

Patriots | Tom Brady limited during practice    Wed Oct 22, 04:56 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady (ankle) was limited during practice Wednesday, Oct. 22.

Footballguys view: Brady is a rock solid QB1 matched up against the Bears this week. After starting the season slowly, Brady has bounced back in a big way for the Patriots and his fantasy owners.

Patriots | Chandler Jones out a while    Tue Oct 21, 07:21 PM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (hip) did not practice Tuesday, Oct. 21 with a hip injury, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Patriots pass rush here. They rank 10th in the NFL with 18 sacks generated so far this year, but Jones has been putting up the best sack totals of anyone on the team. Jones is expected to miss a month or so.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo injury may help him financially    Mon Oct 20, 02:39 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) is out for the year, but his financial status may improve as a result of the injury. A total of $4.5 million of his $6.25 million base salary was guaranteed for injury only, which means he still may collect that money if the Patriots decide to move on.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski nearly goes distance    Fri Oct 17, 07:57 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski played 53 of his team's 57 offensive snaps in the Week 7 game against the New York Jets Thursday, Oct. 18. It was the first time all season he has played over 90 percent of the snaps in a game.

Patriots | Jonas Gray barely used    Fri Oct 17, 12:53 PM

New England Patriots RB Jonas Gray was the team's 'inside' runner behind RB Shane Vereen in Week 7 against the New York Jets Thursday, Oct. 16, but Gray only had three carries on the night.

Footballguys view: Gray ran pretty hot on his carries and seemed disappointed that he didn't get longer gains. Against a lighter run defense like Chicago's next week, he could break through. Of course, the team could always go back to Brandon Bolden, although Gray looks more roster-worthy than Bolden in fantasy leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady tosses three TDs    Fri Oct 17, 12:14 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady completed 20 of his 37 pass attempts for 261 yards and three touchdowns in the team's Week 7 game Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: Brady wasn't sharp, but his receivers made plays for him, and the Jets horrendous coverage allowed for a few easy touchdowns. He is back to being a low QB1 entering his matchup against the Bears next week.

Patriots | Big game for Shane Vereen    Fri Oct 17, 12:05 AM

New England Patriots RB Shane Vereen had 11 carries for 43 yards and five catches for 71 yards and two touchdowns in the team's Week 7 game Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: Vereen's numbers look better than his play. He did leak through a blown coverage for a long TD to start the game, and he got open against the Jets loose zone coverage in the red zone for a second score, but the Patriots notorious change-ups at running back from week-to-week may keep him from having consistent value.

Patriots | Jonas Gray playing tonight    Thu Oct 16, 07:07 PM

New England Patriots RB Jonas Gray will be active tonight and is currently listed ahead of James White on the team's depth chart. White is inactive for the contest.

Footballguys view: Interesting move for the Patriots here. Fantasy owners need to see how these carries/touches are split between Brandon Bolden, Shane Vereen and Gray.

Patriots | Week 7 Inactives    Thu Oct 16, 07:02 PM

Patriots | Make three roster moves    Thu Oct 16, 05:06 PM

The New England Patriots placed RB Stevan Ridley (knee) and LB Jerod Mayo (knee) on Reserve/Injured and promoted OG Chris Barker to the active roster Thursday, Oct. 16.

Footballguys view: This makes Shane Vereen more attractive Thursday and he should be a decent RB2, with a little upside in PPR leagues. The Jets always play the Pats tough, so there is also an element of risk, but as bad as New York has looked, Vereen should be in for a great night.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski back to full strength?    Tue Oct 14, 02:08 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) is back in full force, according to QB Tom Brady. Gronkowski played limited snaps in the first four weeks while recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, but he has emerged in the last few weeks. He had six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown in Week 5 and caught seven passes for 94 yards in Week 6. Gronkowski took some big hits and showed added strength in the game against the Buffalo Bills. "He's a great option out there," Brady said. "So if they don't cover him, he usually gets it. If they put extra guys on him then it frees everybody else up. He's tough to stop. You put a safety on him, he's got size. You put a linebacker on him, he's got speed. He's been that way since he got into the NFL.'
