Patriots | Rob Gronkowski to be at minicamp    Wed May 23, 08:06 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski is expected to be at minicamp, according to Patriots owner Robert Kraft.

Footballguys view: OTAs are voluntary, so Gronkowski is staying away. Minicamp is mandatory and he should be there. In fact, Gronkowski could be there with a new contract in hand. By NFL rule the Patriots can rework Gronkowski's deal (with incentives) on May 24th, one year to the day from the last time he got a new deal.

Patriots | Tom Brady expected for minicamp    Wed May 23, 08:05 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is expected to be at minicamp, according to Patriots owner Robert Kraft. 'These are voluntary workouts... I think he's in great shape,' Kraft said. 'I think he's at an age where he's blessed to have three children and has responsibilities. It's hard to fulfill those during the season.' Kraft also said Brady's relationship with head coach Bill Belichick is good.

Footballguys view: Brady is no doubt taking care of himself as he skips voluntary OTAs. His relationship with Belichick is in question, but once the team starts winning all that will wash away.

Patriots | Julian Edelman puts in limited work at OTAs    Tue May 22, 01:09 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (knee) fielded punts and took part in some individual drills but did not participate in any team drills during OTAs on Tuesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: Edelman tore his ACL last August and missed the 2017 season because of it. They'll continue to keep him limited until we get to training camp and the preseason. Coming back from injury, Edelman has a current ADP of WR25 (5.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Adrian Clayborn could participate in OTAs    Mon May 21, 09:34 PM

New England Patriots DE Adrian Clayborn (quad) has recovered from the minor quadriceps injury he suffered earlier in the offseason workout program, according to a source. As a result, it wouldn't be a surprise if he participated in OTAs on Tuesday, May 22, according to Jeff Howe of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: The injury was originally supposed to limit Clayborn in OTAs. Regardless of whether or not he practices, Clayborn should be full strength by the time training camp rolls around. Coming off a career high 9.5 sacks for the Falcons last year, Clayborn brings veteran punch to the Patriots pass rush.

Patriots | Derek Rivers on the field    Mon May 21, 04:13 PM

New England Patriots DE/LB Derek Rivers (knee) participated in organized team activities Monday, May 21.

Patriots | Julian Edelman practices Monday    Mon May 21, 04:11 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (knee) participated in organized team activities Monday, May 21.

Footballguys view: His level of participation may not have been that much as Edelman was expected to sit out OTAs. He had surgery to repair his ACL in September 2017 and many thought he'd just wait until training camp to get back out there. The Patriots WR corps has some changes this offseason, but Edelman should continue as one of Tom Brady's favorite targets.

Patriots | NE looking to rework Rob Gronkowski's deal    Mon May 21, 01:39 PM

The New England Patriots are working on restructuring TE Rob Gronkowski's contract.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski restructured last year on May 24th and by league rule he can't sign a reworked deal (with incentives) again until one year has passed. He's got two years left on his current contract, and we should see the Patriots play ball with their superstar tight end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski's OTA status uncertain    Mon May 21, 12:04 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's participation in organized team activities is uncertain at this point because of his contract situation, but he will be present for the mandatory June minicamp, according to a source.

Patriots | Tom Brady absent    Mon May 21, 08:46 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady won't report to organized team activities Monday, May 21, but he's expected to report to mandatory camp in June.

Footballguys view: This absence has stirred up some drama around the superstar quarterback. He reportedly is going to spend more time with his family and his workout guru Alex Guerrero instead of showing up to OTAs. There are plenty of questions about his future, but when mandatory workouts begin we should see Brady in attendance.

Patriots | Adrian Clayborn could be limited for OTAs    Sun May 20, 01:10 PM

New England Patriots DE Adrian Clayborn (quad) reportedly tweaked a quadriceps muscle during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: It wouldn't be an NFL offseason without Clayborn banged up in some way. He's one of the more oft-injured players in the league, so expect the Patriots to be cautious bringing him along from this latest ailment. While he is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, he may be limited during OTAs, which begin Monday, May 21.

Patriots | Jason McCourty may see time at safety    Sat May 19, 12:33 PM

New England Patriots CB Jason McCourty may see some time at safety this upcoming season depending on the defensive package.

Footballguys view: McCourty is going to help the depth in the Patriots secondary at multiple positions. They needed CB help to replace Malcolm Butler, but McCourty can play corner or safety. One of the most interchangeable teams in the NFL, it's no surprise they would move McCourty around the back half of the defense.

Patriots | Jason King back with NE    Fri May 18, 05:10 PM

Free-agent OG Jason King (Patriots) re-signed with the New England Patriots Friday, May 18. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Patriots need to keep their remaining offensive line intact. This is a good signing to keep them with some depth.

Patriots | Danny Shelton has target weight    Thu May 17, 03:19 PM

New England Patriots DT Danny Shelton said he wants to play at 335 pounds this upcoming season and is working on getting to that weight.

Footballguys view: Shelton has plenty to play for in his contract year. The Patriots traded for him in March, but they didn't pick up his fifth-year option. Shelton will play out this year then hit the open market in 2019.

Patriots | New England signs Duke Dawson    Wed May 16, 04:44 PM

New England Patriots CB Duke Dawson signed his four-year rookie contract Wednesday, May 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Patriots needed help in their secondary, and that's why they drafted Dawson out of Florida in the second round of the 2018 NFL draft. Dawson measures in at 5'10" 197 pounds, so he's not the largest corner but he plays with the heart of a lion. He is super aggressive when the ball is in the air and does a good job of timing when a pass is coming in. His aggressiveness can be used against him at times (on double moves, etc), but Dawson has a swagger that should help boost the Pats secondary.

Patriots | Darren Andrews reverts to IR    Tue May 15, 05:37 PM

New England Patriots WR Darren Andrews (knee) cleared waivers and reverted to the New England Patriots' Reserve/Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, May 15.

Footballguys view: He will not count against the 90-man roster. Andrews tore his anterior cruciate ligament late last year. He had knee problems during his time in college at UCLA and that's the primary reason he went undrafted in 2017. If/when healthy, Andrews is a strong slot receiver with the quickness and speed to make defenders miss...provided yet another knee problem doesn't slow him down or just knock him out of the league. In ridiculously deep (we mean SUPER deep) dynasty leagues we'll monitor a player like this.

Patriots | NE unlikely to pursue Johnny Manziel    Mon May 14, 12:15 PM

Free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns) likely will no longer be pursued by the New England Patriots after the Patriots selected QB Danny Etling in the 2018 NFL Draft, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Etling is a camp arm for the Patriots, and he may struggle to be much more for the team or in the NFL. Manziel is trying to make a comeback to the league and the Patriots were reportedly interested. Etling's presence shouldn't prevent them from being interested in another quarterback, but Reiss is one of the most connected writers out there...so we take it as gospel.

Patriots | New England signs five picks    Fri May 11, 06:40 PM

New England Patriots fifth-round draft choice LB Ja'Whaun Bentley, sixth-round draft choices LB Christian Sam and WR Braxton Berrios and seventh-round draft choices CB Keion Crossen and TE Ryan Izzo signed four-year contracts Friday, May 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Berrios had a good week of practice at the Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year. The Hurricanes receiver is flashy with the ball in his hands. He can contribute as a slot/underneath receiver or on special teams as a return man.

Patriots | Four linemen to miss workouts    Fri May 11, 05:00 PM

New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn (shoulder), OT Trent Brown (shoulder), OT Marcus Cannon (ankle) and OG Joe Thuney (foot) will miss offseason workouts and minicamp because of injuries, according to offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia.

Patriots | Marcus Cannon likely will stay at RT    Fri May 11, 04:45 PM

New England Patriots OT Marcus Cannon is the team's preferred choice at right tackle this upcoming season, according to offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn will work at LT    Fri May 11, 04:36 PM

New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia said OT Isaiah Wynn will line up at left tackle during rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: An interesting move for the Patriots considering most felt Wynn would shift inside to guard as a pro. We'll see if his shorter-than-ideal arms hamper his ability to play left tackle for the Patriots.

Patriots | New England parts ways with Antonio Garcia    Fri May 11, 01:39 PM

New England Patriots OT Antonio Garcia was released with a non-football injury designation Friday, May 11.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell likely to go for OTAs    Fri May 11, 01:27 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) is expected to participate in OTAs after missing all of the 2017 season with a knee injury, according to The Athletic's Jeff Howe.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is obviously in a make-or-break year in 2018. Even if he stays healthy, finding snaps and targets could prove to be difficult if the Patriots receivers and tight ends are at full strength. Snatch him up for a cheap price in dynasty leagues if you liked what he showed as a rookie in 2016 (32 catches, 401 yards, four touchdowns).

Patriots | Joe Thuney to have surgery    Thu May 10, 08:12 AM

New England Patriots OG Joe Thuney (foot) has been limited in offseason work in anticipation of foot surgery, according to sources. The surgery isn't expected to threaten his availability for the season, but he'll be out of organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have four more guards, including a couple of UDFAs, on the roster just in case, but this doesn't sound like a big priority. Jimmy Garoppolo should be safe.

Patriots | Danny Etling signs rookie deal    Wed May 9, 12:30 PM

New England Patriots QB Danny Etling signed his rookie four-year contract Wednesday, May 9. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Etling is a big project at the quarterback position. The seventh-round pick out of LSU can throw a good deep pass and generally takes care of the football. However, he struggles mightily under pressure and tends to 'see ghosts' when in the pocket. He'll compete to make the 53-man roster behind Tom Brady and Brian Hoyer.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski may rework deal    Mon May 7, 02:49 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's agent has been talking with the Patriots about reworking Gronkowski's contract, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski has been hinting at retirement, so the Patriots may want to put in some incentives that make him happy to stay. It shouldn't take long to get something done if both sides are serious about reworking his deal.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee on the bubble?    Sun May 6, 01:32 PM

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee is likely fighting for a roster spot in 2018 after opening last season as the team's No. 1 running back, according to Mike Reiss of ESPN.

Footballguys view: This report has been going around the Patriots circles as minicamps and OTAs are on the horizon. The Patriots added Jeremy Hill this offseason in free agency and they selected Sony Michel in the 2018 NFL draft. Michel has the ability to be a lead back in the mold of LeSean McCoy. There may not be many touches to go around for Gillislee.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn to work at LT initially    Sat May 5, 12:28 PM

New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn will initially work at left tackle and will compete for the starting job, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. He could compete for the left guard job if he is not named the starting left tackle.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting start...and one many in the scouting community did not expect. Wynn was seen as the 2nd-best guard in this class behind Quenton Nelson, even though Wynn played left tackle in college. The Patriots will try him out and see if he can protect the blind side or is best moved inside at the pro level due to his lack of length.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee to be on bubble    Sat May 5, 12:21 PM

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee will have to win a spot on the 53-man roster during training camp because there would be no dead money on the salary cap if Gillislee is released.

Footballguys view: The Patriots added Jeremy Hill this offseason in free agency and they selected Sony Michel in the 2018 NFL draft. Michel has the ability to be a lead back in the mold of LeSean McCoy. There may not be many touches to go around for Gillislee.

Patriots | Jeremy Hill finally healthy    Thu May 3, 11:44 PM

New England Patriots RB Jeremy Hill said he is finally feeling like himself again after having ankle surgery last season. 'I really didn't have the flexibility and the strength in it that I needed to be the back that I wanted to be,' Hill said. 'I'm glad that I got it done and I can get it back to 100 percent and be the back I know I can be.'

Footballguys view: It's been quite some time since Hill was a 1,000-yard rusher (rookie season in 2014) and an effective back in the pros. He's struggled to gain much positive yardage on a per-carry basis over the last three years, and in 2017 Hill only had 37 carries even though he started seven games before getting hurt. The Patriots use a RBBC and Hill could be the red-zone option for them...and that does have a bit of fantasy value. We'll see how this committee shakes out during camp.

Patriots | Trent Brown ready to compete for LT    Thu May 3, 03:16 PM

New England Patriots OT Trent Brown said he is ready to compete for the left tackle job even though he has spent most of his playing time at right tackle.

Footballguys view: It's not easy to move from place to place on the offensive line but with the departure of Nate Solder, the Patriots have a need. This is one to watch, as it will have a big impact on Tom Brady and the New England offense.

Patriots | Tom Brady to play at least two years    Wed May 2, 09:17 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady said he 'negotiated' with his wife to play two more seasons, and he's working on more.

Footballguys view: Brady wants to play into his mid-40s which would be another four years or so. It sounds like it's going to be two more seasons at least. Brady 'pleaded the fifth' when asked if he felt appreciated by the team. He then went on to say that even though Bill Belichick wasn't the easiest to get along with, he's the right coach for him. Drama aside, the Patriots should be in line to make another deep postseason run in 2018.

Patriots | NE considered moving up for Baker Mayfield?    Tue May 1, 12:59 PM

The New England Patriots reportedly were interested enough in University of Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield to pull off a trade with the New York Giants for the No. 2 overall pick prior to the start of the NFL Draft if he fell past the Cleveland Browns at No. 1, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Mayfield's agent Tom Mills said that in an interview on Andrew Brandt's podcast. It's certainly interesting considering the Patriots winning ways and the aggressiveness Bill Belichick would've shown in finding a quarterback to groom behind Tom Brady. It's all moot now as Mayfield went No.1 overall to the Browns, but it's nice to think about what might have been. The Patriots added a quarterback in the seventh round of the draft, but we don't think LSU's Danny Etling is anything more than a camp arm.

Patriots | Ralph Webb signing with New England    Sun Apr 29, 11:07 AM

Undrafted free-agent RB Ralph Webb (Vanderbilt) reportedly agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Saturday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Webb is one of the all-time leading rushers in SEC history, so some were surprised to see him go undrafted. The Patriots depth chart at running back is crowded, but Webb could make the practice squad and figure into the picture next year.

Patriots | Danny Etling lands in New England    Sat Apr 28, 05:18 PM

The New England Patriots selected Louisiana State QB Danny Etling with the 219th overall pick (Round 7) in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Etling has a nice arm and good size but mechanically his throws are a mess. If there's pressure, it gets even worse. The Patriots have their work cut out for them here.

Patriots | Braxton Berrios goes to Pats    Sat Apr 28, 05:08 PM

The New England Patriots selected Miami-Florida WR Braxton Berrios with the 210th overall pick (Round 6) in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Berrios has good burst off the line and runs a solid routes, plus is a very tough competitor, especially on contested balls. More of a special teams player due to size and short arms, Berrios could work the slot if New England had a need.

Patriots | Several RB battling for one spot?    Fri Apr 27, 11:20 PM

New England Patriots RBs Brandon Bolden, Mike Gillislee and Jeremy Hill might be competing for one spot with the chance one gets cut even before training camp.

Patriots | Move up in Round 2    Fri Apr 27, 08:49 PM

The New England Patriots acquired the No. 56 pick from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for the No. 63 and No. 117 picks. The Pats used the pick on CB Duke Dawson.

Footballguys view: The Patriots needed a cornerback, so they went and got one. You can only hoard so many picks, so eventually Bill Belichick's had to use one and this was a good use of it.

Patriots | New England drafts Duke Dawson    Fri Apr 27, 08:45 PM

The New England Patriots selected Florida CB Duke Dawson with the 56th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Friday, April 27.

Footballguys view: A replacement for Malcolm Butler -- sort of -- finally arrives. A very tough, mostly slot corner, who is going to have to step up to fill Butler's boots.

Patriots | NE not worried about Sony Michel's fumbles    Fri Apr 27, 06:15 PM

New England Patriots RB Sony Michel recorded 12 fumbles during his college career, but director of player personnel Nick Caserio said the team is not concerned about the issue at this point.

Footballguys view: Bill Belichick has zero patience for ballhandling issues, so Michel had better be on point. Otherwise he probably won't have many fumbles because he will see very little time carrying the rock.

Patriots | Isaiah Wynn may be ready for minicamp    Fri Apr 27, 06:15 PM

New England Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn (labrum) is still recovering from labrum surgery but believes he will be ready for the June minicamp.

Footballguys view: He should be fine, and the Patriots got them a solid linemen who, even if he misses minicamp, won't take long to get up to speed.

Patriots | Trent Brown headed to New England    Fri Apr 27, 12:37 PM

Updating a previous report, the New England Patriots agreed to trade a 2018 third-round pick (No. 95 overall) in exchange for San Francisco 49ers OL Trent Brown and a 2018 fifth-round pick (No. 143 overall) on Friday, April 27. The deal is pending a physical.

Footballguys view: The Niners were in position to do this in part because of the Mike Mcglinchey pick Thursday night and the Patriots are always looking to inject new blood (from an organizational standpoint). Brown should bring some needed experience to the Patriots line.
