Patriots | Danny Amendola feeling good    Tue Jun 28, 03:08 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola (ankle, knee) said he feels really good after undergoing two minor procedures this offseason.

Footballguys view: There's no word on whether or not Amendola will be ready to go by the start of training camp, but this report seems to indicate that he will. He played through about half of last year with a knee problem and was able to snare 65 catches for 648 yards and three touchdowns. Other targets could emerge behind TE Rob Gronkowski and WR Julian Edelman this season, and thus Amendola is mostly just a player for the waiver-wire speed dial for fantasy owners.

Patriots | Nate Washington has struggled    Mon Jun 27, 03:14 PM

New England Patriots WR Nate Washington had trouble getting on the same page as QB Tom Brady during organized team activities. He's at risk of missing the final roster if he does not impress at training camp.

Footballguys view: Washington is a vertical threat for the Patriots...something the team lacks. However, the market for him was ice cold for a good reason. We've seen veteran WRs come to New England only to fade due to a lack of chemistry with Brady. Washington is no lock to make the 53-man roster.

Patriots | Several Pats receivers on bubble    Mon Jun 27, 03:02 PM

New England Patriots WRs Keshawn Martin, Aaron Dobson, Nate Washington and Chris Harper are all considered to be on the roster bubble by Paul Perillo of patriots.com. Perillo added that the mostly likely scenario is Martin, Dobson and Washington battling for one or two roster spots.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate that Washington has struggled to get on the same page with QB Tom Brady during the offseason. Dobson had a lot of drops in college at Marshall, and his lack of concentration has continued as a pro. None of these receivers have much (if any) fantasy relevance even if they do make the 53-man roster.

Patriots | Donald Brown embracing opportunity    Wed Jun 22, 11:13 AM

New England Patriots RB Donald Brown led all running backs with 19 receptions in Patriots minicamp, and he is taking advantage of the opportunity to contribute in any way possible. His most likely path to a role is as the top backup to RB LeGarrette Blount. Brown is not considered a lock to make the team, according to Mark Daniels, of the Providence Journal. New England would carry a $300,000 salary cap charge if Brown is released.

Footballguys view: Brown is the kind of versatile back the Patriots can make good use of, but they already have Dion Lewis and James White to play in the passing game, and Brown's strength is not as an inside runner. He might have to present something more compelling than Brandon Bolden's special teams ability to make the team, and that's only if the team doesn't sign Arian Foster later this summer. The team has been linked to Foster by multiple stories and they will likely take a look at him when he is back to full speed.

Patriots | D.J. Foster tweaked hamstring     Thu Jun 16, 09:43 PM

New England Patriots WR D.J. Foster (hamstring) had limited opportunities at the end of minicamp after tweaking his hamstring.

Footballguys view: Foster could work his way up the depth chart...if he can stay healthy. The rookie from Arizona State can play RB or WR, and there's a chance he could develop as a Julian Edelman-like prospect for the team. That's why Foster is a player we'll be monitoring closely in our dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Jacoby Brissett contract details    Thu Jun 16, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots rookie QB Jacoby Brissett signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, June 16. The deal is worth a total of over $3.4 million and includes a $680,604 signing bonus. He also received workout bonuses of $25,000 for each of 2017, 2018 and 2019. The base salaries of the contract are $450,000 this year, $580,038 in 2017, $735,076 in 2018 and $890,114 in 2019.

Footballguys view: Jimmy Garoppolo gets his first starts if Tom Brady's suspension holds up, and if he does well, Garoppolo could end up traded. Which means Brissett could be the future of the position. He's only interesting from a Dynasty standpoint though, as it is unlikely he will see action this year.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett fine in backup role    Thu Jun 16, 06:26 PM

New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett said he doesn't mind playing second fiddle to TE Rob Gronkowski this year. 'I really don't mind being Robin, you know? So right now it's just working every day and just trying to get better. He's an excellent player, and I'm gonna be able to get a lot of single coverages with him,' Bennett said. He has impressed in organized team activities this offseason as a newcomer with his size and athleticism.

Footballguys view: There's a fair chance we could see Bennett take over the long absent Aaron Hernandez role. Coach Bill Belichick is always trying to stay one step ahead, so it wouldn't shock us if he went back to that two tight end set. Bennett is working closely with Tom Brady, so we feel good about him in this offense. He's likely to be a solid TE2 this year.

Patriots | No brace for Dion Lewis    Mon Jun 13, 02:51 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) practiced Monday, June 13, without a brace on his left knee. Lewis said he feels better every day but that he still has a long way to go in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: The team will continue to monitor Lewis closely as he returns from the knee injury that cut his 2015 season short. If healthy, Lewis is a dynamic runner who can make explosive plays as a receiver too. His current ADP is RB15 (4.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Dion Lewis back at practice    Mon Jun 13, 12:34 PM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) is back at practice for the first time Monday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Getting Lewis back is a huge boost for the Patriots offense. He can make plays as a runner in space or as a receiver out o the backfield. Lewis has the speed and foot-frequency to make field-flipping plays on most any touch. We'll be monitoring his continued recovery closely. Lewis is recovering from November surgery to fix a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski suits up    Mon Jun 13, 11:13 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) is on the field for the organized team activities Monday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Last week, reports surfaced about Gronkowski dealing with some sort of "cryptic ailment" but now he's back in action. The team is likely to limit the superstar TE while he deals with whatever in the world this ailment actually is...or was...or whatever. It's the Patriots, so rarely is clarity had with injury situations.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo works with starters    Sat Jun 11, 08:15 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo split first-team reps QB Tom Brady during a three-day minicamp, and WR Nate Washington said that Garoppolo understands the offense.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo should understand the offense by this point in his career. However, we need to see him make plays under pressure before we get too excited about the possibility of him starting. In college, Garoppolo would mentally go into the fetal position whenever under a slight amount of duress. More comfort in this offense should make him more courageous when the defense is swarming around him. We'll know more about Garoppolo when the preseason gets here.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 11, 01:17 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) said he will be ready for training camp despite missing minicamp last week. Gronkowski said he and the coaching staff are on the same page and everything is going smoothly.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Patriots here. The Gronkowski "cryptic ailment" has been on the mind of fantasy owners, but it looks like all is well. The Patriots are just being cautious with their superstar TE, and he'll continue to be the best at his position in fantasy football.

Patriots | Nate Washington still a deep threat    Thu Jun 9, 10:17 PM

New England Patriots WR Nate Washington still has the speed to stretch the field, and he could fill New England's need for an outside deep threat.

Footballguys view: It seems like Washington has been playing for years. Undrafted out of Tiffin in 2005, Washington has now been on four teams during his NFL career. As a part-time player with the Texans last year, Washington was able to snare 47 passes on 94 targets. This year with the Patriots, we think Washington continues as a part-time player but he may only catch around 25 passes. He may have a decent game here or there, but Washington has little fantasy value.

Patriots | Michael Williams injury update    Thu Jun 9, 05:49 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Michael Williams (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice Wednesday, June 8. No other ligaments were damaged, according to a source, but he will seek a second opinion to determine how to fix the ACL surgically.

Footballguys view: We weren't expecting anything from him anyway because if it's not Rob Gronkowski then it will be Martellus Bennett. Gronkowski is a TE1 of course and we think Bennett is a decent TE2.

Patriots | Chris Hogan impressing    Thu Jun 9, 09:16 AM

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan has been a central figure during the first few open practices as he's catching everything thrown his way, and he's constantly getting open. During the first two days of minicamp, Hogan has caught nine passes from QB Tom Brady, most on the team, and another three from QB Jimmy Garoppolo.

Footballguys view: Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski haven't been working much, if at all, in OTAs, so let's not read into this too much. That said, Hogan is expected to have a good shot at squeezing into the third receiver spot. As always, when it comes to Patriots receivers not named Edelman, you pay your ticket and take you chances. Hogan has had some drop issues so far as well, so while he is a guy worth grabbing as depth with upside, he's not someone we feel you can count on.

Patriots | Chris Hogan plagued by drops    Wed Jun 8, 10:45 PM

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan has been so-so during the early days of minicamp. He has made some impressive catches, including a one-handed grab Wednesday, June 8. However, he also has had a few drops in various drills and double-catches.

Patriots | D.J. Foster showing off versatility    Wed Jun 8, 10:44 PM

New England Patriots WR D.J. Foster has been showing off his versatility and athleticism during the early days of minicamp. He appears to be a candidate for the practice squad barring a surprise roster spot at a thin running back position. He has shown burst as a runner and pass catcher, and he is taking reps on special teams, too.

Footballguys view: Sounds just like a Patriots player. Foster was a running back in college at Arizona State, but he's a great receiver and can make plays in the open field. Keep him on your dynasty roster as there could be something brewing here with the young playmaker.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett dodges a bullet    Wed Jun 8, 10:42 PM

New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett (knee) had a minor injury scare at one point in practice Wednesday, June 8, during minicamp. The veteran was attended to by the training staff, focusing on his left knee. After a brief absence he was able to return to drills and team work. Bennett worked with FB James Develin and fellow TEs A.J. Derby and Michael Williams on blocking drills.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are going to be able to do a lot with Bennett and Rob Gronkowski this year. Bennett has yet to fully play up to his potential, but the opportunity is there with a high-powered offense like the Patriots.

Patriots | Rob Ninkovich takes reps at LB    Wed Jun 8, 10:40 PM

New England Patriots DE/LB Rob Ninkovich has been the starting defensive end for each of the past five seasons, but he has been taking almost all of his practice reps at minicamp as an off-the-line linebacker. Most of his work has been lining up next to LB Jamie Collins. Ninkovich has been dropping into coverage in 7-on-7 drills, displaying his unique athleticism and versatility.

Patriots | Julian Edelman absent at minicamp    Wed Jun 8, 10:39 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) has been absent for the first two days of practice at minicamp as he continues to recover from a foot injury.

Footballguys view: Injuries to Patriots players are always tricky as we never truly know the severity. The team is quite clandestine with injured players, so we'll go off the assumption that Edelman will be brought along slowly with an eye on him being ready for training camp.

Patriots | Michael Williams injured in practice    Wed Jun 8, 10:38 PM

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski out with cryptic ailment    Wed Jun 8, 01:07 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) reported with the rest of his teammates Tuesday, June 7, and is continuing to work behind the scenes as the club takes a cautious approach with an undisclosed physical ailment that isn't considered a long-range concern, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Alright...that sounds good, right? It's the Patriots, so we may never really known what's going on here. The cryptic nature of this report is interesting, and we'll be digging for more information from reputable sources. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski not at practice    Tue Jun 7, 02:28 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Tuesday, June 7. It is not known if his absence has anything to do with his contract status or a possible injury. He currently ranks 16th among tight ends in base salary.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine any sort of holdout, but everything is a possibility. The answer is out there somewhere, and we should get more clarity on this situation soon.

Patriots | Tom Brady working with Martellus Bennett    Tue Jun 7, 02:17 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was working one-on-one with TE Martellus Bennett in the red zone during practice Tuesday, June 7.

Footballguys view: Bennett could be huge for the Patriots...and for fantasy owners. While the WR corps isn't full of All-Stars, the TE position features two great players. Rob Gronkowski will still be the lead TE, but Bennett could catch plenty of passes as the team's TE2. Fantasy owners are taking Gronkowski at TE1 (1.09) while Bennett is seen as TE14 (11.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady won't reach settlement    Mon Jun 6, 10:39 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has had no settlement talks about his four-game suspension, and commissioner Roger Goodell said the courts will make their decision.

Footballguys view: Like sands through the hourglass of time, DeflateGate continues. We hope to get a resolution to this at some point in the future. Right now, Brady is suspended four games to start the season and fantasy owners need to adjust Patriots projections due to that.

Patriots | Dion Lewis says rehab going well    Sat Jun 4, 11:07 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) said the rehab from his torn anterior cruciate ligament is going well and that he is doing what the trainers are allowing him to do.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to monitor his progress as he comes back from this injury. If healthy, Lewis can be used effectively as a runner and receiver for the Patriots high-powered offense. Lewis has not participated in offseason workouts and probably will miss the upcoming minicamp as well.

Patriots | D.J. Foster stands out in OTAs    Sun May 29, 08:54 PM

New England Patriots WR D.J. Foster has stood out in running back drills during OTAs because of his burst and smoothness.

Footballguys view: Foster fits the mold of what the Patriots like to do at the position. A former college RB at Arizona State, Foster can make defenders miss after the catch in the open field. He's got the ability to stop and change directions on a dime. Foster is buried on the depth chart at this time, but he could one day be making plays on the field for the Patriots. Fantasy owners in deep dynasty leagues should be all over him.

Patriots | Patriots QBs splitting reps    Fri May 27, 02:28 PM

New England Patriots QBs Tom Brady and Jimmy Garoppolo split first-team reps at practice Thursday, May 26. Last year, Brady dominated the top-tier work.

Footballguys view: The team is wise to prepare Garoppolo for a starting role just in case Brady's four-game suspension is upheld. Some dynasty owners are excited about Garoppolo's upside, but we want to see him show more boldness as a pocket passer before we get too excited. In college, Garoppolo didn't respond well to even mild pressure.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett, Tom Brady connecting    Thu May 26, 06:44 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and TE Martellus Bennett connected several times in the red zone, including some touchdowns, during organized team activities Thursday, May 26. Bennett was New England's primary tight end in practice with TE Rob Gronkowski (undisclosed) not practicing.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is the top target, but don't be surprised if the Patriots get Bennett highly involved. Once upon a time they had Aaron Hernandez across from Gronkowski, and it worked beautifully. Bennett could replicate that. We like him as a nice TE2 option with upside.

Patriots | DeAndre Carter impresses    Thu May 26, 06:37 PM

New England Patriots WR DeAndre Carter showed quickness and good hands out of the slot during organized team activities Thursday, May 26.

Footballguys view: Carter ended up getting cut from the Baltimore Ravens last year despite doing well in camp. Will this be a repeat? He's buried behind a lot of players in New England and could just be shining because so many guys are out this week.

Patriots | Dion Lewis optimistic for Week 1    Tue May 24, 11:30 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis (knee) has given signs of optimism for being ready for the start of the season. Some close to Lewis feel that he's about a month away from being able to play in a game.

Footballguys view: Lewis showed last year just how productive he could be in this system before he went down with this injury. The team will be wisely cautious with him, and his repetitions in organized team activities will be limited at best. If healthy, we see Lewis as a RB2 with RB1 upside in the Patriots high-powered offense.

Patriots | Arian Foster doesn't visit Patriots    Sat May 21, 02:56 PM

Free-agent RB Arian Foster (Texans) did not visit the New England Patriots during his recent trip to Boston.

Footballguys view: We think Foster winds up in the AFC East...with the Dolphins. It makes sense that the Patriots would have interest, even with Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount in the fold. There are rumblings about a small handful of teams, including the Patriots, Dolphins and Broncos having interest in the veteran back.

Patriots | Danny Amendola recovering    Mon May 16, 04:54 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola (knee, ankle) is recovering from a pair of offseason surgeries that could prevent him being ready for the start of the 2016 season. Amendola had surgery on a troublesome left knee and another surgery to remove a bone spur in his ankle, according to a source. Both surgeries happened early this offseason.

Footballguys view: Amendola accepted a pay cut earlier this year...and for good reason. He's got to spend quite a bit of time recovering from these injuries before he's ready for the 2016 season. It's still too early to know when Amendola will be fully recovered, but his knee will demand a longer recovery schedule than his ankle.

Patriots | Joey Iosefa re-signs with Pats    Fri May 13, 02:29 PM

Free-agent RB Joey Iosefa is re-signing with the New England Patriots Friday, May 13.

Footballguys view: A seventh-round pick for the Buccaneers in 2015, Iosefa was bounced from Tampa only to end up with the Brooklyn Bolts in the FXFL and then with the Patriots. He led the team in rushing (51 yards on 14 carries) in their December win over the Titans last year, and then Iosefa was signed to a futures contract after the season was over. He was released last week, only to be brought back now. Buried on the depth chart right now, Iosefa is no lock for the final roster.

Patriots | Julian Edelman had surgery    Wed May 11, 03:36 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (foot) recently underwent foot surgery but is still on pace to participate in training camp, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Edelman was recently seen walking around in a large boot, and now we hear about this surgery. It's an interesting note right now, but expect Edelman to be ready for the start of the regular season. However, know that foot injuries can linger and if pushed too hard there can be a setback.
