Patriots | Rob Gronkowski was already mulling future    Sat Feb 17, 09:37 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski had been thinking about retirement 'long before' the loss in Super Bowl LII, according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: The retirement talk is real with Gronkowski. We think he ends up returning for the 2018 season, but he may not have too many seasons left after that. Dynasty owners need to be adding Jacob Hollister ASAP just in case he gets a larger role in the near future.

Patriots | Nate Solder wants to keep playing    Tue Feb 13, 03:18 AM

New England Patriots impending free-agent OT Nate Solder said that he wants to continue playing. It remains to be seen, though, if he would take another team-friendly two-year, $20 million contract when he could 'conceivably' get $12 million annually on the open market.

Footballguys view: It's a bad market at the tackle position in free agency. Solder would be the best by far, and several teams would be interested in paying him $12 million annually to man the left side of the line.

New England Patriots LB Trevor Reilly's contract was not extended and he officially became a free agent Monday, Feb. 12.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks feeling good    Sun Feb 11, 12:23 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks (head) is encouraged by how he has felt since suffering a head injury during Super Bowl LII, according to people close to him.

Footballguys view: Cooks was knocked out of the Super Bowl on a vicious hit. It's good to hear that he's feeling good, and Cooks should be good to go for the start of offseason workouts. A top-10 fantasy WR each of the last two years, Cooks should once again be a WR1 for fantasy owners in 2018.

Patriots | Dion Lewis on the way out?    Sat Feb 10, 09:52 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Dion Lewis plans to test the market unless he is offered around $10 million guaranteed as part of a three-year deal, according to Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald, and Howe said the 'early vibe' is that Lewis won't be back with the Patriots in 2018.

Footballguys view: The Patriots aren't known for throwing around money to running backs, so the vibe is likely correct. Lewis is arguably the best running back to be available on the open market this offseason with Le'Veon Bell likely staying with the Steelers.

Patriots | Extension possible for Brandin Cooks    Sat Feb 10, 09:24 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks wants to remain with the team, and Jeff Howe of the Boston Herald believes Cooks could offered an extension to lower his $8.459 million cap hit in 2018.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in 2014, Cooks is playing on the fifth-year option in 2018. He's set to hit the open market in 2019, but the Patriots may work out a deal to keep him around much longer.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower back by camp?    Sat Feb 10, 09:09 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Hightower only played in five games in 2017 and was put on Injured Reserve in November with this shoulder injury. The team is going to be cautious with Hightower through OTAs and minicamp. That way he can be ready for full participation in training camp.

Patriots | Derek Rivers should be ready for 2018    Sat Feb 10, 01:01 PM

New England Patriots DE Derek Rivers (knee) should be ready for the start of the 2018 season as long as he does not suffer a setback in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Patriots | No franchise tag for Nate Solder    Sat Feb 10, 01:00 PM

The New England Patriots will not be allowed to place the franchise tag on impending free-agent OT Nate Solder this offseason because it is prohibited as part of his expiring contract. Solder is expected to take some time before deciding on if he wants to play in 2018.

Patriots | Julian Edelman should be ready for camp    Fri Feb 9, 02:37 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Edelman had surgery to repair his knee back in September of 2017. That gives him nearly a full calendar year before the start of the 2018 regular season. Edelman should be eased back into action when training camp start in August.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett due roster bonus    Fri Feb 9, 02:25 PM

New England Patriots TE Martellus Bennett is scheduled to receive a $2 million roster bonus March 14. The team would save $6.2 million in salary cap space if they release Bennett.

Footballguys view: Bennett has discussed retirement, so there's no guarantee that he'll even want to play in 2018. The Patriots could always ask him to take a pay cut if they want him on the team this season.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski's retirement thoughts 'real'    Thu Feb 8, 11:53 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski's thoughts about retirement ever since the club's loss in Super Bowl 52 on Sunday, Feb. 4, against the Philadelphia Eagles are 'real,' according to Albert Breer of SI.com.

Footballguys view: He's not getting any younger, and the All Pro tight end takes a beating on a weekly basis. Gronkowski has been responsible with his finances, putting away most of his football money and living largely off his endorsement cash. The concussion problems keep piling up for Gronkowski and he may just decide to hang up his cleats. We think he returns for 2018, but that's not a total certainty.

Patriots | Josh McDaniels to receive long-term deal    Thu Feb 8, 05:47 PM

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is expected to sign a four- or five-year contract extension with the Patriots.

Footballguys view: There's no way McDaniels stayed in New England without a virtual guarantee of replacing Bill Belichick when Belichick retires in the near future. If he wasn't given that assurance, he is in some trouble, as his name is currently mud around the NFL.

Patriots | Greg Schiano staying at Ohio State    Wed Feb 7, 11:00 AM

Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano will not take the New England Patriots vacant defensive coordinator position.

Footballguys view: There was plenty of buzz about Schiano coming on board as the new defensive coordinator for the Pats. In fact, there were rumors about him perhaps being the head-coach-in-waiting after Bill Belichick retires. That's not the case now with Josh McDaniels staying as offensive coordinator with the likelihood that he's the future coach of the Patriots.

Patriots | New England keeping Josh McDaniels as OC    Tue Feb 6, 08:09 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has decided to remain with the team in his current post rather than accept the head coaching job with the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Things change quickly around here. The Colts website and social networking pages had already declared McDaniels as their new head coach earlier on Tuesday. Now, the Patriots keep McDaniels...likely to take over for Bill Belichick in the near future. Belichick is likely to coach the Patriots in 2018, but his future beyond that is in question.

New England Patriots practice squad players C James Ferentz, WR Cody Hollister, S David X. Jones, OL Jason King, CB Ryan Lewis, WR Riley McCarron, S Damarius Travis, LB Trevor Reilly, TE Will Tye and CB Jomal Wiltz were signed Tuesday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Tye is the player to watch here as we're always interested in Patriots tight ends. He was an intriguing dynasty player earlier in his career with the Giants, but Tye bounced to the Jets and then to the Patriots practice squad for 2017.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler denies accusations    Tue Feb 6, 04:40 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent CB Malcolm Butler said he never missed curfew or participated in any 'ridiculous activities' during Super Bowl week. Butler added that he wished he could have done more to help the Patriots win, but at the same time he is preparing for his next opportunity.

Footballguys view: He's going to have some explaining to do as Butler is set to hit the free agent market this spring. Teams are certainly going to check into this to see if there's a deeper problem or if it just was a case of the Patriots wanting to use different packages. From our standpoint, it's difficult to fully trust either side in this situation.

Patriots | Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski tie record    Tue Feb 6, 12:36 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and TE Rob Gronkowski have now connected for 12 touchdown passes in playoff games after Brady hooked up with Gronkowski twice in Super Bowl 52 against the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Feb. 4. That ties them up with retired QB Joe Montana and WR Jerry Rice for the most touchdowns by a quarterback-receiver duo in NFL postseason history.

Footballguys view: With so many changes for the Patriots this offseason, one has to wonder if the duo of Brady/Gronkowski will play in the Super Bowl ever again. We've witnessed a dynasty that will be difficult to duplicate in today's NFL with the New England Patriots. They've been in or near a Super Bowl window for nearly 20 years, but that time may have come to a close.

Patriots | Some clarification on Malcolm Butler    Mon Feb 5, 07:03 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots impending free-agent CB Malcolm Butler was benched for the Super Bowl due to several reasons, including showing up a day later than teammates because he was sick and struggling in practices. Head coach Bill Belichick has been vague as to the specific reasoning behind Butler's benching.

Footballguys view: As we get further away from this situation we should start learning more but may never know the entire truth. Either way, the Patriots are likely to move on from Butler this offseason.

Patriots | Tom Brady on wrong side of record books     Mon Feb 5, 03:18 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for at least 500 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions in a loss - regular season or postseason.

Footballguys view: The Patriots played a nearly flawless game but it wasn't enough to beat the Eagles in Super Bowl LII. Brady fumbled late in the game as the team was trying to make a game-winning comeback. That play was among the small difference makers in the contest.

Patriots | Free agency decisions ahead for New England    Mon Feb 5, 01:55 PM

The New England Patriots face the prospect of losing several key free agents. The Patriots have to address key impending free agents in OTs Nate Solder, Cameron Fleming and LaAdrian Waddle, along with RB Rex Burkhead, WR Danny Amendola, CB Malcolm Butler, WR/ST Matthew Slater and RB Dion Lewis. New England is projected to have approximately $17 million in salary cap space. TE Dwayne Allen, TE Martellus Bennett, DT Alan Branch, LB David Harris and RB Mike Gillislee all could be released to create more cap space.

Footballguys view: Solder is their franchise left tackle, and there's not a lot of talent at the position in this free agent class. There is speculation that Solder will end up retiring.

The New England Patriots have declared DL Alan Branch, WR Bernard Reedy, OL Cole Croston, LB David Harris, TE Jacob Hollister, WR Kenny Britt, RB Mike Gillislee inactive for Week 21.

Footballguys view: Mike Gillislee was seen as a possible sly Patriots pilfer from a division rival a la the Chris Hogan deal, but it ended up being a bust because Gillislee was ineffective or hurt for most of the season. He's unlikely to be back next year.

Patriots | NE to be patient with Antonio Garcia    Sun Feb 4, 12:26 PM

New England Patriots OT Antonio Garcia (illness) has lost around 40 pounds because of an illness but is working on adding the weight back on, according to offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia. Scarnecchia said the Patriots will be patient with Garcia as he works his way back from the illness.

Footballguys view: The Patriots had good players four deep on the depth chart at offensive tackle, but backups LaAdrian Waddle and Cameron Fleming will be free agents. They could really use Garcia, but the weight loss makes it sound like he's not even ready to practice yet and 2018 will basically be his rookie year.

Patriots | Dante Scarnecchia could return    Sun Feb 4, 12:16 PM

New England Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia has not decided if he will return next season but did said he could envision himself coaching one more season.

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was named the 2017 Most Valuable Player by the Associated Press Saturday, Feb. 3. It was the third time he has received MVP honors, tying him for the second most in NFL history.

Footballguys view: Brady and the Patriots got off to a slow start in the season opener, but he was up to speed quickly and did it without Julian Edelman. There's no superlative too lofty for Brady at this point in his career.

Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano is expected to interview for the New England Patriots' defensive coordinator position after the season when current defensive coordinator Matt Patricia is officially named head coach of the Detroit Lions.

Footballguys view: Bill Belichick vouched for Schiano in the wake of the Tennessee head coaching "hire" debacle and the two are close friends. Belichick has seemed to show an inclination to taking players from Rutgers, the program Schiano built. This connection makes a ton of sense.

Footballguys view: For what that's worth. Brady has posted a 5-2 record in Super Bowl appearances as well. Everyone has a plan - and stats - until they (or their team) gets punched in the face and they still have to play the game.
