Patriots | Julian Edelman lacked sure hands last season    Sun Mar 29, 05:16 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman was charged with a league-high 13 drops in 2019 - five more than he had in 2018.

Footballguys view: Edelman is going to have a different quarterback tossing him passes this year with Tom Brady gone to the Buccaneers. We'll see if he can be more sure-handed to help out the team's new starter.

Patriots | Jarrett Stidham appears to be favorite for starting job    Sun Mar 29, 09:19 AM

The New England Patriots' starting quarterback job appears to be QB Jarrett Stidham's to lose, according to Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. The team is not expected to pursue a mid-tier veteran quarterback this offseason.

Footballguys view: Stidham had first-round tools and was projected as a top quarterback before his senior season at Auburn. He fell to the mid rounds of the draft where the Patriots scooped him up last year. Stidham is tough and accurate as a passer, but this leap to the starting lineup is going to be huge for the young quarterback. If Stidham is the Patriots starter, expect the team to help him out by running the ball and playing great defense.

Patriots | NE reportedly not interested in Andy Dalton    Sun Mar 22, 11:41 AM

The New England Patriots have not discussed trading for Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton as a potential successor to QB Tom Brady.

Footballguys view: Dalton would be an interesting option for the Patriots because of his experience and accuracy on short-to-intermediate routes. It doesn't sound like that's going to happen, so we'll see who the Patriots end up with. Jarrett Stidham, Cody Kessler and Brian Hoyer are currently the quarterbacks on the roster.

Patriots | Brian Hoyer could join Pats    Sat Mar 21, 06:15 PM

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Colts) is open to signing with the New England Patriots this offseason in a backup role.

Footballguys view: He could sign for a third stint with the Patriots to be a veteran backup. The Patriots may sign a veteran quarterback to be a starter in free agency (Cam Newton?), but they could also roll with second-year pro Jarrett Stidham as their starter. If the latter is the case, then they'd really need an experienced backup like Hoyer.

Patriots | Jameis Winston not a fit for New England?    Fri Mar 20, 01:14 PM

Free-agent QB Jameis Winston (Buccaneers) is 'unlikely' to be a target of the New England Patriots, according to a high-ranking team official Friday, March 20.

Footballguys view: We'll see what the Patriots do at the quarterback position. Without Tom Brady things are going to be much, much different in 2020. Jarrett Stidham is currently at the top of the depth chart but it's unlikely the team just turns things over to the second-year pro this season.

New England Patriots impending free-agent WR Phillip Dorsett said he will go into free agency with an open mind because of the reduced role he received with the Patriots this past season.

Footballguys view: Dorsett could return to the Patriots but we think another team might take a chance on the speedy veteran. There's not too many super-fast receivers in this free agent class, and that benefits guys like Dorsett, Robby Anderson and Travis Benjamin.

Patriots | Mohamed Sanu to have surgery    Fri Feb 28, 01:55 PM

New England Patriots WR Mohamed Sanu (ankle) will need offseason surgery on his high-ankle sprain that he incurred in the 2019 season, per a source Friday, Feb. 28.

Footballguys view: Sanu wasn't the same at the end of the year so the Patriots could get a lot more out of him next season, but they still vastly overpaid for him when they sent a second-round pick to Atlanta. He'll be 31 this year and could be on the decline if his ankle isn't the same.

Impending free-agent Marcus Mariota (Titans) is reportedly of interest to the New England Patriots with the uncertainty surrounding Tom Brady's return to the team, according to Pro Football Network's Tony Pauline.

Footballguys view: Mariota needs to go to an organization that will have a highly structured offensive system and the Patriots qualify. This pairing makes sense even if Brady returns with the clock ticking on his career in any event.

Patriots | Tom Brady still in New England's plans    Thu Feb 27, 10:19 PM

Updating previous reports, impending free-agent QB Tom Brady (Patriots) is 'in fact in the Patriots' plans (for 2020),' according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: He should be as they don't have a Plan B on the roster. The question is whether they'll meet his salary demands, or alternatively whether he'll still give them a discount. We probably won't get an answer until after we know the outcome of this round of CBA negotiations.

Patriots | Ted Karras likely to leave    Thu Feb 27, 06:11 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent C Ted Karras is not expected to re-sign with the Patriots this offseason.

Footballguys view: Karras had a good year filling in for David Andrews and should be tabbed to start somewhere and give the Patriots a high compensatory pick next year.

Link to story

Patriots | Joe Thuney not expected back    Thu Feb 27, 06:00 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent OG Joe Thuney likely will be too expensive for the Patriots to re-sign this offseason, in the opinion of NESN.com's Doug Kyed.

Footballguys view: The Patriots could be without Thuney and center Ted Karras, who will also have a good market in free agency. Hopefully they will get center David Andrews back after he suffered blood clots his lungs last year, but there will be some rebuilding on the line in any event.

Patriots | NE waiting on CBA before Tom Brady talks    Thu Feb 27, 04:23 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady has not talked to the Patriots at this point, but the team wants to see if a new collective bargaining agreement will be reached in the near future before starting contract negotiations with Brady, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This jives with a lot of the pause in the buzzmill and lack of action in the pre-free agency period. The Patriots are still the most likely team for Brady in 2020.

Patriots | Tom Brady to bolt?    Thu Feb 27, 10:21 AM

New England Patriots impending free-agent QB Tom Brady would shock ESPN's Jeff Darlington if he re-signed with the Patriots. Darlington said on ESPN's 'Get Up' that he would be stunned if Brady returned at this point.

Footballguys view: The reports about Brady vary from day to day. Sometimes the speculation is that Brady is not going anywhere. The next day, reporters speculate that Brady is 100 percent gone. It's 'Brady Watch' in 2020 and we'll just have to wait and see what happens. The Patriots might make a strong push to keep him around, but the numbers are already speculated in terms of what the Raiders would offer him (two-year, $60 million contract). Just stay tuned and get ready to hear any possibility will happen.
