Patriots | Julian Edelman hurt in practice    Tue Aug 4, 03:55 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman (undisclosed) came up gimpy during practice Sunday, Aug. 2, and rehabilitated during practice Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: It's the Patriots, so the severity of this injury will be unclear. We'll be able to guess at the severity by the length of time that Edelman misses practice. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski sees bonus early    Tue Aug 4, 10:39 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski had his deal restructured Tuesday, Aug. 4, which awarded him $4 million of his $10 million bonus that was due at the end of the 2015 league year. Gronkowski's contract called for a $10 million option bonus for the team to decide upon by the end of the 2015 league year that would, in effect, kick in the remaining four years on his deal. If the team opted to decline that bonus, Gronkowski would become a free agent.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski said in his recent book that he hasn't touched a penny of his contract or bonus money. Instead, Gronkowski lives off endorsement deals. The Patriots are locking up the league's best tight end for the foreseeable future.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo taking first-team reps    Sat Aug 1, 04:57 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo took some first-team reps at training camp Saturday, Aug. 1. QB Tom Brady worked with the starters during every period of practice, but Garoppolo took a 'few snaps,' according to James Palmer of NFL Media.

Footballguys view: There's no telling what happens with Tom Brady. At this time, Brady is set to miss the first four games of the year due to suspension. The Patriots need to get Garoppolo prepared to start in case Brady's suspension is not eliminated or reduced.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount practicing    Sat Aug 1, 10:10 AM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount (undisclosed) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: Blount is going to miss the first game of the season due to a suspension. After that, he'll be the Patriots hammer on the ground. Blount is going to split time with a receiving back like James White this year. That part-time role puts him as a high-end RB3 with upside for fantasy owners.

Patriots | Aaron Dobson in great shape    Fri Jul 31, 09:48 AM

New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson came into training camp in great shape, according to Patriots head coach Bill Belichick. Dobson 'put himself into good position,' Belichick said.

Footballguys view: Things haven't worked out for Dobson in the pros. He was a second-round pick coming out of Marshall, and the Patriots thought he could be an impact player. Instead, Dobson has battled injuries and only has 40 receptions in two years. If Brandon LaFell is slow to recover from whatever lower leg ailment is keeping him on the PUP, Dobson could become more interesting to monitor.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower making progress    Thu Jul 30, 04:21 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) is optimistic after the first day of training camp Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Hightower indicates things are headed in the right direction, but there's no timetable for when he will be cleared for full contact. He underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason.

Patriots | Tom Brady works with starters    Thu Jul 30, 02:12 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady received all of the reps with first-team offense during practice Thursday, July 30, and completed 27 of his 30 passes during team drills.

Footballguys view: Brady looked great out there in training camp. We'll have to wait and see if he is actually going to stay suspended for the first four games of the year.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo struggles Thursday    Thu Jul 30, 01:24 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo made several mistakes during practice Thursday, July 30, and the team will work on correcting those mistakes during training camp, according to offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo struggled in practice last year, but he looked good in preseason games. The second-year quarterback may just be bad in practice but good in games. At this time, Garoppolo is set to start the first four games of the year while Brady is suspended.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount fails running test    Thu Jul 30, 12:59 PM

New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount was placed on the Non-Football Injury list because he was not able to complete the conditioning test at the start of training camp. Players have to run 20 sprints of 50 yards in under eight seconds to pass the test, but Blount was only able to complete 12 reps.

Footballguys view: Blount will get back out there soon enough. He's set to be the lead back for the Patriots this year, but Blount will miss the first game of the season due to a suspension. He is a two-down thumper and a RB3 for fantasy owners.

Patriots | Tom Brady's case moved to New York    Thu Jul 30, 10:08 AM

Updating an ongoing story, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's lawsuit was transferred to Manhattan, N.Y., by a Minnesota judge Friday, July 30.

Footballguys view: This is a win for the NFL. The NFLPA wanted this to be tried in Minnesota where Judge David Doty presides. He has historically been friendly to the Player's Association.

Patriots | Tom Brady files suit against NFL    Thu Jul 30, 09:48 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has filed a lawsuit against the NFL asking a Minnesota federal court for penalties against Brady to be vacated. The suit alleges that Brady's punishment was not fair and consistent. It also claims that the appeal hearing 'defied any concept of fundamental fairness' and that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was partial in his decision to uphold the suspension.

Footballguys view: This is in a way Brady calling foul on Goodell. Yes, Goodell decided to uphold the suspension and we know there's a million Pats fans saying "not fair!" --but this ability Goodell has was collectively bargained for. We can't see a judge ruling against something that was agreed to in the CBA. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Tom Brady defends broken phone    Wed Jul 29, 09:19 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady posted on Facebook that he replaced his broken phone with a new one after his attorneys told the NFL 'my actual phone device' would not be investigated. His representatives turned over requested cell phone records and emails, Brady said, and tried to obtain text messages from his old phone.

Footballguys view: Where's Lily from AT&T when you need her? Seriously, just turn over the phone and he might have been able to avoid a suspension. Brady's defenders (and Brady himself) have to realize how bad this looks to destroy part of the evidence. He's popped for four games, and now he'll sue the league to get that suspension reduced, eliminated or delayed.

Patriots | Tom Brady offers lesser penalty    Wed Jul 29, 01:42 AM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady could have had his suspended reduced based on a series of conditions. According to a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL was willing to drop the suspension by 'at least 50 percent' if Brady admitted to having knowledge of what the team's staff was doing to footballs, he admitted to failing to cooperate with the Ted Wells investigation and he apologized.

Footballguys view: Brady continues to declare his innocence in this whole debacle, and he hasn't exactly cooperated 100 percent in the investigation. Now, we'll see if legal action can get his suspension delayed, eliminated or reduced. The general feeling is that most judges are going to rule against something that has been collectively bargained for. Thus, Brady's four-game ban might stick.

Patriots | NE still wins without Tom Brady    Tue Jul 28, 05:07 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is facing a four-game suspension, but the Patriots have done fairly well without him. In games Brady has missed since he became a starter in 2001, New England has gone 10-5. They have averaged about two fewer points per game and about 27 fewer passing yards per game. However, their rushing yards have increased from 115.7 yards per game to 143.5 yards per game. Their total yards per game have actually increased as well from 366.8 yards per game to 367.3 yards per game.

Footballguys view: We'll see what second-year quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo can do as the team's starter over the first month of the season. The Patriots have LeGarrette Blount as their lead back, but he's suspended the first game of the season. Looking over the schedule, the Patriots may start the season 1-3 before Brady is eligible to return.

Patriots | Tom Brady taking appeal to court    Tue Jul 28, 04:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has given permission to the NFL Players Association to appeal his case in federal court, according to a source. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell upheld Brady's four-game suspension for his involvement in deflating footballs in last year's postseason.

Footballguys view: This story isn't going away anytime soon. Brady gets four games, and any decision from a federal court may not come in time for that to change. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Tom Brady's suspension upheld    Tue Jul 28, 02:43 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's four-game suspension has been upheld by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Obviously, the New England offense shouldn't be expected to perform as well with Jimmy Garoppolo under center. But this is how we've been projecting New England for a while. No big changes there.

Patriots | Tom Brady settlement talks continue    Tue Jul 28, 11:59 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's legal team is expected to continue settlement negotiations Tuesday, July 28, according to sources.

Footballguys view: If the suspension is upheld, Brady is expected to go to federal court and seek an injunction that will allow him to play while his case works its way through the courts.

Patriots | Tom Brady suspension to be upheld?    Tue Jul 28, 10:11 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is expected to have his four-game suspension upheld, a source told ESPN's Stephen A. Smith. Smith said on 'ESPN First Take' Tuesday, July 28, that a source told him 'within the last hour,' that unless something changed at the last minute, Brady's suspension would be upheld. Smith said an announcement is expected within the next 24 to 48 hours.

Footballguys view: If Brady has a single game remaining on his suspension, then we're likely to see legal action from Brady's side. This situation has worn on for what feels like forever. Hopefully we get a resolution soon.

Patriots | Brandon LaFell added to PUP list    Mon Jul 27, 05:18 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell (foot) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: LaFell was reportedly wearing a boot during offseason workouts, but he ditched the boot earlier this month. The Patriots could just be easing LaFell back into action. This designation means the team can activate him at any time during camp.

Patriots | Tom Brady's case may be settled    Mon Jul 27, 01:58 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal of his four-game suspension still has not been announced, and the NFL is now open to talking with the NFL Players Association about a possible settlement in the case, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Brady is not expected to accept any suspension in a settlement with the NFL but is willing to accept a fine. If any suspension stands, then expect legal action from Brady's camp. Hopefully, we get an answer (and an end) to this soon.

Patriots | Scott Chandler impressed    Mon Jul 27, 10:20 AM

New England Patriots TE Scott Chandler was one of the stars of the offseason workout program by dominating in the red zone alongside TE Rob Gronkowski.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Chandler can come in and do the same thing in training camp and the preseason. Keep Chandler on your waiver-wire speed dial if the Patriots look like they'll use him more than most expect. Over the last four years in Buffalo, Chandler has caught 17 touchdown passes. He might be a sneaky red-zone target here and there for Tom Brady this year.

Patriots | No Tom Brady decision Friday    Fri Jul 24, 09:24 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is unlikely to have a ruling on his appeal announced Friday, July 24.

  Patriots | Zach D'Orazio re-signed    Thu Jul 23, 04:55 PM

Free-agent WR Zach D'Orazio (Patriots) re-signed an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Thursday, July 23.

Footballguys view: A converted college quarterback, D'Orazio had more than two years of playing wide receiver at Akron. He finished his career with 119 receptions for 1,422 yards and five touchdowns. The Patriots originally signed him as an undrafted free agent earlier this year.

Patriots | Union offered league deal for Tom Brady    Thu Jul 23, 11:31 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady was the subject of a settlement offer from the NFL Players Association to the league last week, but the offer was met with silence by the NFL, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Rumors and reports speculate that Brady is holding firm on his refusal to accept any suspension, though he would consider accepting a fine. If the NFL does not budge on his four-game suspension--or if he's even suspended at all--he is expected to go to federal court to fight the decision.

Patriots | NE RBs in close battle     Tue Jul 21, 07:01 PM

New England Patriots RBs James White, Travaris Cadet and Dion Lewis aren't far apart in the battle to take over the pass-catching role vacated by New York Giants RB Shane Vereen, according to Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com.

Footballguys view: There's a lot to like about each one of these players. We're excited to see what White can do with a larger role this year. The second-year back from Wisconsin is a determined runner, and he can make plays in open space. Both Cadet and Lewis could be fine change-of-pace backs as well.

Patriots | No timetable for Tom Brady's appeal    Tue Jul 21, 04:16 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal on his four-game suspension does not have a specified timeline, according to commissioner Roger Goodell. Goodell said the league is being thorough with the appeal process, adding that a decision will be made as quickly as possible.

Footballguys view: As quickly as possible? Yeah right. Fantasy owners want to know if Brady is going to get popped for four games, or if he's going to be ready for the season opener. If Brady has any games remaining on his suspension expect more legal action from his camp.

Patriots | Reggie Wayne drawing interest from Patriots    Mon Jul 20, 08:26 AM

Free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) is drawing interest from the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Wayne should not be considered a starter at this point in his career, but he could find a home with a Super Bowl contender as veteran depth. With the Patriots, Wayne could be the fourth WR behind Julian Edelman, Brandon LaFell and Danny Amendola.

Patriots | Tom Brady ruling coming this week?    Sun Jul 19, 05:30 PM

Updating previous reports, the camp for New England Patriots QB Tom Brady believes an appeal decision could come this week, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. Brady appealed a four-game suspension ruling for his involvement in deflating footballs last postseason.

Footballguys view: He currently sits with a four-game suspension, but many people are expecting a reduction. If there's no elimination of the suspension, then expect Brady's legal team to get further involved with litigation.

Patriots | Julian Edelman focused on football    Sat Jul 18, 02:31 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman said he is focusing on preparing for training camp, not worrying about the looming decision regarding QB Tom Brady's suspension. 'I'm not really thinking about that right now,' Edelman said. 'I have 10 more days to get ready for camp and I'm going to worry about what I can do to put myself in the best situation to help this team.'

Footballguys view: Edelman is going to move the chains no matter what happens with Brady. He works shorter routes to get open, and we could see Edelman lead the team in targets once again this season. In PPR formats, Edelman is a low or mid-range WR2 for fantasy owners in 12-team leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady decision not coming Friday    Fri Jul 17, 04:52 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal decision is unlikely to come Friday, July 17, according to a source. Brady appealed a four-game suspension ruling for his involvement in deflating footballs last postseason.

Footballguys view: Maybe next Friday? The decision on Brady's appeal may not even be the final verdict. Reports indicate that Brady will sue if he's suspended even one game due to this whole "DeflateGate" drama.

Patriots | Stephen Gostkowski signs long-term deal    Wed Jul 15, 02:18 PM

New England Patriots PK Stephen Gostkowski agreed to terms with the Patriots Wednesday, July 15, on a four-year deal worth around $17 million.

Footballguys view: Arguably the best kicker in the league, Gostkowski is now the highest-paid at his position. He had already signed his one-year franchise tender, but the two sides were able to work out a long-term agreement. His current ADP is K1 (13.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Tom Brady will sue if given any games    Wed Jul 15, 09:16 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will challenge an appeal ruling of missing any games in federal court, according to NFLPA sources.

Footballguys view: The battle here is far from over. The ruling on Brady's suspension could come down before the start of training camp, and many are expecting his four-game sentence to be reduced. However, even if he's suspended only one game there is legal action to be taken by Brady after that.

Patriots | Don't'a Hightower ahead of schedule?    Mon Jul 13, 02:26 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) said he doesn't have a target date for his return, but said he has visited a doctor and could be ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation.

Footballguys view: Hightower had shoulder surgery in February with an initial recovery time of six or seven months. He wants to be ready for the start of the regular season, but there's no guarantees that Hightower is going to be ready. He's an option to begin the season on the PUP list if the shoulder isn't healed enough for him to play.

Patriots | James White could break out    Thu Jul 9, 06:48 PM

New England Patriots RB James White is expected to make a jump in his second year in the NFL, according to Paul Perillo of Patriots Football Weekly.

Footballguys view: White will compete with Travaris Cadet and Dion Lewis for the receiving back role vacated by Shane Vereen in free agency, with veteran Brandon Bolden potentially in the mix. Don't expect any of them to replicate Vereen's production, but they could be interesting DFS plays when the matchup dictates less running and more passing by the Patriots.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo making progress    Thu Jul 9, 03:08 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has made a lot of progress since last season and performed well during offseason workouts, according to WR Brandon LaFell. 'Jimmy has grown a lot since he first stepped foot up there in Foxborough last year,' LaFell said. 'He got a little experience during the later part of the season against Buffalo; he showed a little glimpse of what he can do. He's been having a nice OTAs, a nice offseason with us.'

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is unlikely to ring up huge stats in the first four games of the year, but he should also be functional enough to make Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman viable starts. Matt Cassel was adequate to start and got better as the year went on when Tom Brady went down in 2008, and Garoppolo will have had the benefit of months of specific preparation as the starter instead of being thrown in like Cassel was. If he has a dirt cheap price in DFS lineups those first few weeks, we'll be looking at him as an option.

Patriots | Tom Brady appeal ruling near    Thu Jul 9, 10:27 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's appeal ruling of a four-game suspension could come as early as next week, according to commissioner Roger Goodell.

Footballguys view: It can only be neutral to positive for Brady and the Patriots. A four-game suspension has already been priced into Brady's ADP, so if his suspension is reduced, those who drafted him lately will get extra value.

Patriots | Brandon LaFell out of walking boot    Wed Jul 8, 02:58 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandon LaFell (undisclosed) said he is out of the walking boot he was wearing earlier this offseason. LaFell said he was dealing with some nagging injuries from the season and was giving the injuries time to heal. He has been trying to improve this offseason by working with QB Tom Brady and improving his knowledge of the playbook.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are not forthcoming about injuries, so this is a relief. LaFell was surprisingly productive once he got integrated into the offense last year - putting up WR2 numbers for most of the season. He is available for WR3/WR4 price right now, which is a value even with Jimmy Garoppolo starting four games for New England at quarterback as of this moment.

Patriots | Tom Brady's ruling not expected for weeks    Thu Jun 25, 06:21 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady isn't expected to hear the decision from his suspension hearing Tuesday, June 23, until mid-to-late July.

Footballguys view: Leave it to our beloved NFL to keep us hanging. Most fantasy drafts don't get fired up until August, so most owners will know whether or not Brady is suspended--and how long he's out for.

Patriots | Tom Brady decision due in July    Thu Jun 25, 09:09 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is unlikely to have a decision on the appeal of his four-game suspension until mid-to-late July.

Footballguys view: The wait continues. Brady's ADP is tracking as a low-end QB1 (around the eight round) and the FBGs staff is a bit split on him. On the one hand, missing four games (as it stands) will force his year-end numbers to look like those of a QB2. However, if his sentence is reduced or if you look at a per-game basis even on a truncated season, Brady will probably give you QB1 numbers. If you can find a good replacement for the first five weeks of the season (the Patriots have an early bye), then Brady is a good player to snag who can pay off late.

Patriots | Tom Brady's appeal hearing continues    Tue Jun 23, 07:31 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is still having the appeal of his four-game suspension heard Tuesday, June 23, and the NFL does not want to continue the hearing Thursday, June 25.

Footballguys view: We'll know more about this hearing in the near future. With NFL commissioner Roger Goodell open to "new evidence" it leaves the door open for the four-game ban to get reduced. We'll see if Brady gets a break, or if he has to miss the first month of the season.

Patriots | Tom Brady under oath in appeal    Tue Jun 23, 10:49 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady is testifying under oath in his appeal hearing Tuesday, June 23, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Brady has to convince NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell that he's innocent in the whole "DeflateGate" incident. Rumors have been floated that Brady doesn't have any way to reduce his sentence. We'll have to wait and see if he gets his four-game suspension reduced or if it remains intact to start the 2015 season.

Patriots | RB White a carbon copy of Shane Vereen?    Mon Jun 22, 10:04 AM

Karen Guregian, from the Boston Herald, reports that second-year running back James White is a "carbon copy" of former Patriots change-of-pace back Shane Vereen. He's been looking great this offseason at OTAs and minicamp, and White could be considered the frontrunner to win the third-down back role for the Patriots in 2015.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners in PPR leagues pay attention to this battle in training camp. White is going to compete with Tarvaris Cadet for the change-of-pace duties behind starter LeGarrette Blount. The winner of the competition has the opportunity to play a larger role than some think. There's a possibility of around 40-50 catches here in the Vereen role. Over the last two seasons, Vereen caught 47 and 53 passes for the Patriots. Now that role could belong to White....stay tuned.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo not fully healthy    Sun Jun 21, 10:05 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) did not participate in offseason workouts and still is not 100% from the torn patellar tendon he suffered last season.

Footballguys view: Mayo suffered the injury back in October, ending his season for the second year in a row (in Week 6) prematurely. He took a massive pay cut to stay with the team earlier this offseason, and the timetable for his actual return is unknown. There's a chance he could begin training camp on the PUP list.

Patriots | Aaron Dobson healthy, more comfortable    Sat Jun 20, 02:05 PM

New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (hamstring) said he's feeling well and is more comfortable with the offense this year. 'I learned a lot, [I got] a lot of mental [repetitions]. I'm getting more comfortable with the playbook.' Dobson is competing with Brandon Gibson, Josh Boyce and Brian Tyms for roster spots this year.

Footballguys view: Dobson is in a make-or-break season with the Patriots. They drafted him in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft with the idea that he could be a threat on the outside. Injuries and inconsistencies have derailed his pro career, and Dobson only have three catches in 2014. Reports indicate he's been taking advantage of his opportunities in minicamp and OTAs. Dynasty owners can buy low right now if so inclined.
