Patriots | Seven UDFAs sign with Patriots    Sun May 1, 12:36 PM

The New England Patriots have agreed to terms with unrestricted free-agent CB V'Angelo Bentley (Illinois), DT Woodrow Hamilton (Mississippi State), LB CJ Johnson (Mississippi State), CB Jonathan Jones (Auburn), RB Shaquille Powell (Duke), TE Steven Scheu (Vanderbilt) and WR/TE De'Runnya Wilson (Mississippi State) on undisclosed deals.

Footballguys view: Wilson is a huge receiver with bottom of the barrel movement skills. Maybe the Patriots can make him into a viable receiving tight end.

Patriots | Cre'von LeBlanc heads to NE    Sat Apr 30, 09:00 PM

The New England Patriots signed undrafted free-agent CB Cre'Von LeBlanc (Florida Atlantic) to a deal that includes a $10,000 signing bonus, and $7,500 of base guaranteed.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell fits in New England    Sat Apr 30, 01:43 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell has the short-area burst the team looks for in receivers, and beat writer Mike Reiss believes the addition of Mitchell will give the team flexibility in handling the contract situation of WR Danny Amendola.

Footballguys view: Amendola has been a mixed bag for New England, so getting someone who could replace him is a good idea anyway, contract notwithstanding. We never know who will step up for the Patriots beyond Rob Gronkowski and Julian Edelman, so don't sell your house to move up in Dynasty for Mitchell, but keep an eye on him.

Patriots | Pats add another QB in Brissett    Fri Apr 29, 11:02 PM

The New England Patriots selected North Carolina State QB Jacoby Brissett with the No. 91 overall pick in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: And the Connor Cook tumble continues. He has great size and a live arm, but is very raw and is still learning the position.

Patriots | Tom Brady talks with NFL unlikely    Wed Apr 27, 07:54 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady and the NFL are not expected to talk anymore regarding a settlement, according to a source. The league doesn't believe the NFL Players' Association or any of Brady's representatives have provided a reason to renew settlement talks. Brady's suspension was recently upheld by a federal appeals court and he is expected to miss the first four games of the regular season.

Footballguys view: It's time to plan on the Patriots not having Brady for the first four games, although he'll likely exhaust every legal avenue he has to avoid it.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo has made strides    Tue Apr 26, 09:14 AM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has made great strides, according to head coach Bill Belichick. 'The reps that he's gotten on the field in preseason games and in practice,' Belichick said, 'I think he's shown a lot of development - better understanding, quicker recognition and reading of the defenses, more awareness of what's happening on the defensive side of the ball, better communication, better understanding of the offense - really everything.'

Footballguys view: Does he go into the fetal position mentally under pressure? That's what he did in college, and so far in preseason appearances we've seen Garoppolo hasn't shaken that bad habit. He'll face plenty of pressure while filling in for a suspended Tom Brady to start the 2016 season. Expect the Patriots to lean heavily on their rushing attack while Brady is out.

Patriots | Tom Brady not accepting ruling    Mon Apr 25, 04:37 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady will not yet accept the court ruling of his four-game suspension, according to sources. He is mulling options with his legal team.

Footballguys view: Of course he is. An appeal of this decision may not result in a positive outcome for Brady. We just want this whole DeflateGate thing to go away. It's the week of the draft, and we're still dealing with something that allegedly happened in the 2014 playoffs! Ah, the wheels of justice.

Patriots | Tom Brady's appeal chances not good    Mon Apr 25, 01:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady's chances of winning an appeal after his four-game suspension was reinstated are not good, according to director of Tulane Sports Law Program Gabe Feldman. 'But Tom Brady's next step is to make an en banc appeal to ask the entire second circuit to hear that -- those are very rarely granted. And even more rare is the Supreme Court to hear this case. So Tom Brady is almost out of chances. I think any chance he has left is very slim,' Feldman said.

Footballguys view: Ugh, let's get DeflateGate over with please. Brady has a right to appeal, but it seems like that would not result in the outcome he wants.

Patriots | Tom Brady's suspension restored    Mon Apr 25, 11:54 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady had his four-game suspension from last season reinstated by a U.S. Appeals court Monday, April 25.

Footballguys view: This is not entirely unexpected. Now, the team will use backup Jimmy Garoppolo in their first four games against the Cardinals, Dolphins, Texans, and Bills. Brady is eligible to return for the Patriots Week 5 contest against the Browns. The future Hall of Fame quarterback will be allowed to be with the team during training camp and the preseason.

Patriots | Gronk not concerned about his contract    Fri Apr 22, 01:26 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski said he's not concerned about his contract. 'No, that's not on my mind at all. I started offseason workouts yesterday. It just feels great to be back with the team working out, getting back in football shape and getting prepared for the season.'

Footballguys view: Gronkowski doesn't worry about anything. He's got a carefree attitude, so it's no surprise he wouldn't be focused on his contract at this time.

Patriots | Devontae Booker visiting Patriots    Wed Apr 20, 11:08 AM

Utah RB Devontae Booker is visiting with the New England Patriots Wednesday, April 20.

Footballguys view: The Pats have some options at running back right now, but are always looking for an upgrade. Booker is coming off a torn meniscus in his knee which required surgery in November, but despite missing a chunk of his senior year, was named to the All Pac12 second team. A powerful, workhorse back who sees the running lanes and gets through them quickly, durability and a low top-end speed hurt his cause. He could very well be there for the Patriots' second round pick.

Patriots | Dominique Easley released    Wed Apr 13, 03:59 PM

New England Patriots DL Dominique Easley was released Wednesday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Easley had chronic knee problems as a pro, but reports are coming in about this release being more about off-field issues. It's unclear what those would be, but the Patriots had clearly had enough.

Patriots | More on LeGarrette Blount's contract    Tue Apr 12, 03:38 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount's one-year deal is worth up to $2 million -- $1 million in base salary and bonuses and $1 million in incentives, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Blount will be asked to play a similar role for the team as he's done in years past. He's a power back who can be replaced on third downs. Blount needs to stay healthy if he wants to produce as a large piece of what the Pats do on the ground.

Patriots | LeGarrette Blount re-ups for one year    Tue Apr 12, 12:48 PM

Updating an earlier report, New England Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount signed a one-year deal Tuesday, April 12.

Footballguys view: Blount stays with the team that knows how to get the most out of him. He'll be the power element to the Patriots rushing attack. Provided he stays healthy, Blount will likely be a two-down thumper for the Pats in 2016.

Patriots | Devontae Booker could be fit for Pats    Mon Apr 11, 11:13 PM

Utah RB Devontae Booker will work at his Pro Day Tuesday, April 12, and after his combine rechecks he is expected to meet with the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Booker could be a nice fit for the team in the 2016 NFL Draft, as he has the pass-catching skills to be a three-down option.

Patriots | Tyler Gaffney released    Mon Apr 11, 05:05 PM

New England Patriots RB Tyler Gaffney was cut Monday, April 11.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft (Panthers), Gaffney's pro career was knocked off course due to injury and inconsistency. He's physically gifted as a power runner, but he's nothing more than a deep dynasty asset.

Patriots | Alonzo Russell works out    Thu Apr 7, 07:58 PM

Toledo WR Alonzo Russell worked out privately for the New England Patriots Thursday, April 7, according to a source. Russell has also worked out for the Dallas Cowboys and has met with the Green Bay Packers.

Footballguys view: The Patriots will probably add a receiver or two in the draft but it's unlikely they will put up numbers worth a fantasy roster spot. If it's not Julian Edelman or Rob Gronkowski, we're not sold.

Patriots | Two players officially sign    Mon Apr 4, 05:52 PM

New England Patriots DT Terrance Knighton and TE Clay Harbor officially signed with the Patriots Monday, April 4.

Footballguys view: Knighton is going to plug up the middle and play as a poor man's version of Vince Wilfork. Harbor is a reserve TE who has always teased with upside but never played up to his potential.

Free-agent DT Terrance Knighton (Redskins) has informed the New England Patriots that he will be joining the team, according to a source. Nothing has been signed yet, however.

Footballguys view: A great add for the Patriots if this actually comes to fruition. They needed some weight up front and Knighton will help solidify the middle of the defense.

Patriots | Mike Williams visits Foxboro    Thu Mar 31, 12:21 AM

Free-agent WR Mike Williams (Bills) worked out for the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 30.

Footballguys view: Williams hasn't proven his off-field issues are not going to interfere with his on-field production, but if you are going to turn it around, New England is the place to try.

Patriots | Jeff Cumberland works out in NE    Thu Mar 31, 12:20 AM

Free-agent TE Jeff Cumberland (Jets) worked out for the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 30, a source said.

Patriots | New England adding Clay Harbor    Wed Mar 30, 06:00 PM

Free-agent TE Clay Harbor (Jaguars) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 30, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Harbor will give the Patriots a third tight end more in the H-back/move tight end mold to complement classic two way tight ends Rob Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett. Look for the Patriots to run more two and three tight ends than any other team in the league.

Patriots | Favorite for Terrance Knighton    Wed Mar 30, 03:46 PM

Free-agent DT Terrance Knighton (Redskins) is leaning towards signing with the New England Patriots, according to a source. Knighton has visited the Patriots and the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Knighton is an immovable object who would play a role on early downs in the Patriots defense.

Patriots | E.J. Biggers signs with Pats    Wed Mar 30, 01:50 PM

Free-agent CB E.J. Biggers (Eagles) signed an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 30.

Free-agent CB E.J. Biggers (Eagles) is close to joining the New England Patriots on a one-year, $840,000 contract. Biggers' deal would include a $25,000 signing bonus and a base salary of $760,000. He will also be able to earn $30,000 in roster bonuses and another $25,000 report bonus on the first day of training camp. Additionally, there is a split in the contract that will adjust Biggers' base salary to $428,000 if he goes to the Reserve/Injured list during the preseason.

Patriots | Terrance Knighton visiting Pats    Mon Mar 28, 11:28 AM

Free-agent DT Terrance Knighton (Redskins) will visit the New England Patriots Monday, March 28.

Footballguys view: Knighton has always reminded us of former Pats NT Vince Wilfork. The move to add "PotRoast" would make a lot of sense. He can play as a rotational player up front and help stuff the run.

Patriots | Nate Washington joining Patriots    Thu Mar 24, 04:44 PM

Free-agent WR Nate Washington (Titans) is signing an undisclosed deal with the New England Patriots Thursday, March 24, according to a source.

Footballguys view: What role will Washington play in this offense? With Brandon LaFell gone, he might see a significant role, but if the name isn't "Edelman" or "Gronkowski," Patriot wide receivers are not reliable.

Patriots | Donald Brown a good fit in New England?    Sun Mar 20, 07:40 PM

New England Patriots RB Donald Brown is a 'perfect' signing, according to San Diego Chargers president John Spanos. 'I would bet anything he's going to be a productive player for them,' Spanos said.

Footballguys view: Let's not go overboard here. Brown is a good all-purpose back, but he's coming off two seasons with the Chargers where he averaged 2.6 and 3.9 yards per carry. He's a good role player and a backup for the Patriots.

Patriots | Danny Amendola done with Pats?    Thu Mar 17, 01:45 AM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola might be in danger of losing his job, as a source with knowledge of the situation said Wednesday, March 16, that it's indeed possible Amendola could be released.

Footballguys view: A lot of folks are thinking he ends up in Houston, which would be a nice fit, especially as Brock Osweiler will need a dump-option, something Amendola excels at. Stay tuned.

Patriots | Martellus Bennett acquired by Pats    Wed Mar 16, 07:31 PM

Chicago Bears TE Martellus Bennett has been acquired by the New England Patriots in exchange for draft-pick compensation, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have been looking for a second tight end to use alongside Rob Gronkowski since Aaron Hernandez was arrested on murder charges. Bennett has the potential to be a dangerous weapon for the Patriots offense, and it gives them another player to patrol the middle of the field. From a fantasy perspective, we could see Bennett as a TE2 with TE1 upside.

Patriots | Donald Brown agrees to deal with Pats    Wed Mar 16, 03:13 PM

Free-agent RB Donald Brown (Chargers) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Wednesday, March 16. Details of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Brown is merely a change-of-pace back, and there's no guarantee that he'll make the final roster for the Patriots. He's likely to start camp behind Dion Lewis and James White.

Patriots | Chris Long joins New England    Wed Mar 16, 12:40 AM

The New England Patriots signed free-agent DE Chris Long (Rams) to a one-year contract Tuesday, March 15. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: After trading away DE Chandler Jones (Cardinals), the Patriots had to do something at the position. Adding Long makes a lot of sense. Over the last two years, Long has battled through various injuries and that's why the Pats may use him as a rotational player. If healthy, Long provides the team with great value.

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones was traded to the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, March 15, in exchange for Cardinals OG Jonathan Cooper and a second-round draft pick, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals get a pass-rusher they've been looking for here. Jones will likely play outside linebacker in the Cardinals 3-4 defense. Entering the final year of his contract, Jones could get an extension with the Cardinals now that he's on the team. Jones has 36 sacks in 55 career games.
