Patriots | Duron Harmon missed workouts    Fri Jul 21, 05:07 PM

New England Patriots FS Duron Harmon (ankle) did not participate in offseason workouts because he is recovering from offseason ankle surgery. He appears to be close to returning but his status for the start of training camp is uncertain.

Patriots | Champs high on Jimmy Garoppolo    Fri Jul 21, 11:20 AM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has head coach Bill Belichick enamored by his ability, according to one scout. 'Bill thinks he's got the next great one,' the scout said. 'I watched his snaps. I think he can be that. (Garoppolo) has a great base, and his mechanics are close enough to (QB Tom Brady) that you appreciate his willingness to learn and the coaching he's gotten there.'

Footballguys view: Well, the Patriots sure weren't in a rush to get rid of him, so we believe it. Garoppolo was impressive as far back as the 2014 Senior Bowl, with a strong arm and a sharp football mind. The question was whether he could learn to do all the little things and adjust his game. From what we saw last season before he was injured, the answer is yes. He's not likely to have fantasy value this year barring an injury to Brady, but he should be on your dynasty rosters without a doubt.

Patriots | Matt Lengel underwent offseason surgery    Sat Jul 15, 11:17 AM

New England Patriots TE Matt Lengel (finger) is being brought along slowly after undergoing finger surgery in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Lengel is a big-bodied target (6'7") out of Eastern Kentucy who the team singed to a one-year deal (as an ERFA) back in March. The Patriots have an interesting group of TEs behind Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen. Lengel is going to be fine for training camp (most likely), but we're more excited by guys like James O'Shaughnessy and Jacob Hollister. The pecking order will be established in the preseason.

Patriots | Jacoby Brissett considered a lock    Fri Jul 14, 10:25 AM

New England Patriots QB Jacoby Brissett is considered a lock to make the team by beat writer Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The future is unknown for backup Jimmy Garropolo. He's set to be a free agent after the season, and he's set to get a pretty lucrative contract to be a starter elsewhere. Brissett is big, athletic and has a strong arm. He should continue to be groomed as a backup behind Tom Brady.

Patriots | D.J. Foster on the bubble?    Thu Jul 13, 10:37 PM

New England Patriots RB D.J. Foster was effective catching the ball in spring practices, but Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com believes the offseason signings of RB Mike Gillislee and RB Rex Burkhead could make it tough for Foster to make the roster.

Footballguys view: Any team in need of a receiving back could give Foster a look if/when released.

Patriots | Dwayne Allen not a lock    Thu Jul 13, 10:18 AM

New England Patriots TE Dwayne Allen isn't considered a lock to make the team, in the opinion of beat writer Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Allen has been pretty lackluster from a career standpoint, so this is no real surprise, however keep in mind we haven't even hit camp. Further, Reiss is just speculating to speculate and really, we knew Allen had a lot to prove going in. That doesn't mean we're excited by Allen, but we're not counting him out yet given the lack of legitimate tight ends outside of Rob Gronkwoski.

Patriots | Julian Edelman was most targeted slot WR    Wed Jul 12, 10:27 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman had the highest target percentage from the slot of any wide receiver in the NFL during the 2016 season. He was targeted 29.1 percent of the time when he lined up in the slot, while retired WR Steve Smith (28 percent) and Oakland Raiders WR Michael Crabtree (26.7 percent) finished second and third, respectively.

Footballguys view: The addition of Brandin Cooks is an exciting one for fantasy owners and Patriots fans. We'll see how his presence changes the target count for guys like Julian Edelman. Instead of nearly 100 catches (98) like he had last season, Edelman might be in line for more likely 80 catches or so in 2017.

Patriots | Nate Solder in final year of deal    Wed Jul 12, 06:32 PM

New England Patriots OT Nate Solder is entering the final year of his current contract, and the team will not be allowed to place the franchise tag on him next season because it was part of the extension he signed a few years ago.

Footballguys view: Solder is going to be one of the hottest players on the market next year if the Pats don't lock him up. When healthy, Solder is a fine blind-side protector.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee dealt with injury    Wed Jul 12, 06:30 PM

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee (undisclosed) dealt with an undisclosed injury during offseason workouts, but running backs coach Ivan Fears said it did not appear to be a long-term issue.

Footballguys view: Gillislee is the player most likely to take over the LeGarrette Blount role in 2017. There may not be 18 rushing touchdowns (like there was for Blount last year), but obviously Gillislee can have plenty of fantasy value. Right now, Gillislee is RB28 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Dion Lewis could see limited snaps    Wed Jul 12, 05:59 PM

The New England Patriots could consider limiting RB Dion Lewis' regular season snaps in order to keep him healthy for all 16 games, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Lewis is going to work as a change-of-pace back behind Mike Gillislee. He'll likely be behind James White too. Lewis will only have fantasy value if guys above him on the depth chart get hurt.

Patriots | Andrew Hawkins may be on bubble    Wed Jul 12, 02:20 PM

New England Patriots WR Andrew Hawkins could be on the roster bubble during training camp if the Patriots decide to keep only six wide receivers on their final roster, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Hawkins was added this offseason by the Patriots, and he's certainly no lock for the 53-man roster. He does fit what the Pats want from their WRs as he's quick, shifty and elusive after the catch. His primary competition for perhaps the final spot on the depth chart at wide receiver is Danny Amendola.

Patriots | Danny Amendola considered a lock    Mon Jul 10, 09:38 AM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is considered a lock to make the team, according to beat writer Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: The Pats are jam-packed at the position, but Amendola took a pay cut earlier this year and that greatly helps his chances. He was slated to make $6 million in 2017, but now his cap hit is just a little over $3 million. Amendola's main competition for a spot (the last one?) on the depth chart is free agent addition Andrew Hawkins.

Patriots | Several Patriots to compete for No. 3 TE job    Sun Jul 9, 04:09 PM

New England Patriots TEs Matt Lengel, James O'Shaughnessy, Jacob Hollister and Sam Cotton likely will compete for the No. 3 tight end job during training camp.

Footballguys view: O'Shaughnessy is the most talented after the catch and the Patriots gave up draft capital to get him this spring. Hollister is a plus athlete with good route running skills who lacks blocking prowess. The Patriots offense is good enough to make any competent player fantasy relevant at tight end if they lose Dwayne Allen or Rob Gronkowski.

Patriots | Matt Lengel had offseason surgery    Sun Jul 9, 04:08 PM

New England Patriots TE Matt Lengel (finger) had surgery earlier this offseason to repair a finger injury. The Patriots have been taking things slow with Lengel this offseason.

Footballguys view: Lengel will compete with James O'Shaughnessy among others to be the #3 tight end for the Patriots. This is a role we may revisit during the season since both Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen have been known to miss time with injuries and they are the #1 and #2.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee in prominent running role?    Tue Jul 4, 10:52 AM

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee is the most likely back to fill the void left by RB LeGarrette Blount's departure, in the opinion of beat writer Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: He still has a lot of competition in a backfield which has never been known for consistency in distribution of carries. He is a bit more versatile than Blount was but is two inches shorter and 33 pounds lighter. He isn't quite the aggressive runner Blount is either. That said, he'll get a lot of carries on early downs. That may not be as good a thing as we think it will be. Gillislee had a 5.7 yards per carry in 2016, but that was on 101 runs. Blount carried the ball 299 times. Can Gillislee carry that big a load? Keep that in mind when looking at his current ADP of 79 overall and ranking as 28th back coming off the board.

Patriots | Tom Brady breaks silence on Gisele's concussion comments    Sun Jul 2, 09:21 PM

Andrew Joseph, from USA Today, reports New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady finally broke his silence on his wife Gisele's comments about concussions. In a recent interview on ESPN's E:60, Brady said "She's there every day. I mean, we go to bed in the same bed every night, so I think she knows when I'm sore, she knows when I'm tired, she knows when I get hit. We drive home together [from games]. But, she also knows how well I take care of myself. She's a very concerned wife and very loving."

Footballguys view: Gisele revealed in an interview with CBS that Brady had suffered concussions during the 2016 season. This caused a bit of a stir as Brady was never on the injury report in 2016 with a concussion. Unreported injuries are a huge concern for the league, but Brady's agent Don Yee denies his client was concussed last year.

Patriots | New England releases DeAndrew White     Sat Jun 24, 11:54 PM

The New England Patriots released WR DeAndrew White Thursday, June 22.

Footballguys view: The former Alabama receiver was originally signed by the 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2015. The Patriots picked him up in 2016 and he spent most of last year on the team's practice squad. He could be one of those on-again/off-again receivers for multiple teams and has little fantasy value in super deep dynasty leagues.

Patriots | David Harris likely to make team    Fri Jun 23, 10:12 AM

New England Patriots LB David Harris is a near lock to make the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: With $1.25 million in guaranteed money, Harris is a near lock for the final roster. Not a shock given his veteran experience and ability to still be a two-down run-stuffer. Harris should play on early downs, leaving LB Shea McLellin for sub-package situations.

Patriots | Shea McClellin likely in passing-down role    Fri Jun 23, 10:11 AM

New England Patriots LB Shea McClellin is likely to be used in a 'passing-game' role to utilize his coverage skills.

Footballguys view: That's why the team added David Harris after the Jets released him. Harris is not a player you want in on passing downs, but he's a better run-defender than McClellin. The combination should work out nicely for the Patriots.

Patriots | David Harris agrees with Patriots    Wed Jun 21, 10:23 AM

Free-agent LB David Harris (Jets) agreed to a two-year deal with the New England Patriots Wednesday, June 21, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Harris is a two-down thumper who can stuff the run. He's not the same player he used to be, but Harris can still be an effective pro. Harris will compete for playing time in a crowded linebacker group behind Donta Hightower.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks praised by head coach    Tue Jun 20, 07:49 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks has already impressed head coach Bill Belichick. 'Brandin's worked hard. Definitely, he has some skill. A transition for him [from the Saints]; he's working hard to make it,' Belichick said. Belichick said Cooks is able to do multiple things for the Patriots and they'll have to see how those tools translate at training camp.

Footballguys view: New England has added other WRs before that just don't get the system and struggle to produce. It seems like Cooks is getting it, and that should only boost his already high fantasy value. Cooks is coming off the board at WR11 (2.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell eased along during spring    Sun Jun 18, 03:49 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell was kept on the sideline throughout spring practices by design. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the Patriots are subscribing to a 'less is more' approach with the second-year wideout and doing what they can to help sustain him for the long haul given his extensive history with knee injuries.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are jam-packed at the wide receiver position, so they can afford to take it easy on Mitchell in the spring. We'll see what kind of workload the second-year pro gets through training camp and the preseason. He's fourth (at best) on the depth chart at the wide receiver position.

Patriots | Patrick Chung can earn bigger salary    Sat Jun 17, 02:54 PM

New England Patriots SS Patrick Chung will have a chance to earn an extra $800,000 in incentives this upcoming season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Earlier this year, the Patriots signed Chung to a one-year, $5.7 million extension through 2018. That deal already included $900K in incentives. Chung is a big part of what the Patriots want to do on defense, and hitting those incentives may not be a problem for the veteran safety.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski a full participant    Fri Jun 16, 10:23 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) has been a full participant in practice and hasn't missed a practice this offseason.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is going to smash once again, coming to a football stadium near you. He's a top-flight fantasy tight end if healthy. He's coming off the board at TE1 (2.08) in 12-team PPR leagues right now.

Patriots | Tom Brady's arm strength still there    Fri Jun 16, 10:16 AM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady has showcased the same arm strength he has for most of his career in offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Brady doesn't have a rocket arm, but he can make throws on time and accurately. In 2016, 11.1 percent of Brady's targets came at 20 yards or more. That mark ranked 13th in the league last year. With WR Brandin Cooks added via trade, we might see Brady take a few more deep shots in 2017.

Patriots | Chris Hogan in three-wide sets    Fri Jun 16, 10:16 AM

New England Patriots WR Chris Hogan has been lining up with WR Brandin Cooks and WR Julian Edelman in three-wide receiver sets.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are stacked at the wide receiver position as Hogan is their no3 receiver and he could be a starter for many teams in the NFL. Hogan's hallmark is his toughness and ability to get open. He'll be a role player for the Pats, especially with TE Rob Gronkowski healthy.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo limited    Tue Jun 13, 12:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (leg) was limited to the exercise bike Tuesday, June 13, due to a minor leg injury.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is set to be the primary backup behind Tom Brady again this year. After 2017, Garoppolo is scheduled to be a free agent on the open market. It will be interesting to see if they can keep him around if Brady sticks around past this year, which is quite likely given his health and desire to play well into his 40s.

Patriots | Matt Lengel favorite to be No. 3 TE    Sun Jun 11, 12:29 AM

Patriots | Brandin Cooks lining up everywhere    Fri Jun 9, 11:23 AM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks is lining up everywhere on the field for the team, and he caught a team-high eight passes during a three-day minicamp this week. Cooks finishes every single route, regardless of how quickly the ball is delivered, and he flashes his hands at the end of the route to simulate the timing of the throw, according to S Devin McCourty.

Footballguys view: With 1,100 yards receiving in back-to-back years, Cooks may be in for a larger total this year with his new team. He's catching everything thrown his way, and Cooks seems to have instant chemistry with QB Tom Brady. That's not the case for every free agent WR (see Chad Johnson, etc) that ends up with the Patriots. Cooks has a current ADP of WR12 (2.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Julian Edelman can earn $19 million    Fri Jun 9, 08:46 AM

Updating previous reports, New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman can earn a maximum of $19 million with his two-year extension. He received a $5 million signing bonus, a $3 million salary in 2017 with a $750,000 roster bonus ($46,875 per game), a $250,000 workout bonus and $500,000 in incentives. In 2018, his $2 million base salary is fully guaranteed with a $500,000 workout bonus, $500,000 roster bonus and $500,000 in incentives. In 2019, his $2 million salary is guaranteed for injury with a $500,000 workout bonus, $500,000 roster bonus and $3.5 million in incentives.

Footballguys view: We'll continue to say this was a fair deal for both sides. Edelman gets some stability, while the Patriots get him at a discount.

Patriots | Julian Edelman agrees to extension    Thu Jun 8, 04:31 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman agreed to a multi-year contract extension Thursday, June 8, according to sources.

Footballguys view: NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Julian Edelman's two-year extension is worth $11 million, and includes $9 million in "total" guarantees. This is a good deal for both sides. Edelman gets the security every player wants and the Patriots get him at a discount.

Patriots | Derek Rivers signs rookie contract    Thu Jun 8, 03:55 PM

New England Patriots DE Derek Rivers signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, June 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: At 6'4" 248 pounds, Rivers is an effort rusher from the edge. He's a bit ridged athletically, but Rivers should be able to work into the mix as a part-time rusher.

Patriots | Julian Edelman talks progressing    Thu Jun 8, 02:49 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman's contract extension talks are moving forward and an agreement should be made in the next day or so, according to sources.

Footballguys view: We still have a lot of faith in Edelman despite the presence of Brandin Cooks, though we expect his numbers to drop a bit from 2016. However, while he may not hit 1,100 like he did last season, we don't expect him to end up hovering between 600-700 like he was in 2015. Somewhere in the middle sounds about right, and is reflected by his 52 ADP overall and 23 ADP among receivers.

Patriots | Brandin Cooks impressive at minicamp    Wed Jun 7, 03:45 PM

New England Patriots WR Brandin Cooks has been one of the breakout performers during minicamp this week and his speed has set him apart from his teammates, in the opinion of the Boston Herald's Jeff Howe.

Footballguys view: Cooks will add a dimension to a pass offense that was already very difficult to slow down. His fantasy ceiling isn't as high as it was in New Orleans because of the myriad of options in New England, but he is still a high weekly ceiling WR2 and he certainly enhances the value of Tom Brady.

Patriots | Antonio Garcia signs rookie deal    Mon Jun 5, 05:51 PM

New England Patriots OT Antonio Garcia signed his four-year rookie deal Monday, June 5. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: At 6'6" 305 pounds, Garcia has good length and strength when it comes to protecting the passer. A third-round pick this year, Garcia is going to compete as a developmental prospect with the upside to be a future starter.

Patriots | Mike Gillislee the favorite to start?    Mon Jun 5, 05:29 PM

New England Patriots RB Mike Gillislee appears to be the frontrunner for the Patriots' starting running back job, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe, although he is expected to be part of a committee.

Footballguys view: This isn't really a question as Gillislee was added to play the LeGarrette Blount role in 2017. That makes him quite fantasy relevant, although duplicating Blount's 18 rushing touchdowns from a year ago will be a tall order. Gillislee has RB2 upside but a low-end RB3 price at this time with a current ADP of RB34 (7.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (back) is 'feeling great' after several weeks on the field and in the gym. He has practiced without restriction.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski will get back to smashing once the regular season rolls around. Every fantasy owners knows that he's a TE1 when healthy and he's getting drafted at a proper spot. He's going off the board at TE1 (2.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | James White pegged for prime role    Wed May 31, 10:49 AM

New England Patriots RB James White has firmly entrenched himself as the passing-down back for the club.

Footballguys view: White caught 60 passes for the Patriots last year, and that number could push towards 75 this year with an entrenched role. The backfield duties are going to be split between Mike Gillislee as the lead back with White coming in on passing downs and in certain packages. Dion Lewis will work into the mix somehow as well, but for now White seems to be the "1b" to Gillislee's "1a" in 2017. White has a current ADP of RB49 (11.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Andrew Hawkins contract update    Sun May 28, 04:14 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots WR Andrew Hawkins' one-year deal includes a $900,000 base salary.

Footballguys view: Hawkins is going to compete with Danny Amendola for the likely final spot at the WR position. He's lightning quick and fits the mold of what the Patriots are looking for. Hawkins took less money for a chance to compete for a championship with the Patriots.

Patriots | Danny Amendola in fight for last WR spot    Sun May 28, 01:45 PM

New England Patriots WR Danny Amendola is expected to battle Andrew Hawkins for the sixth and likely final receiver spot in camp, according to ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Amendola took a pay cut earlier this year to help his case for making the final roster. Now scheduled to count $3 million against he cap, Amendola will have to beat out Hawkins for that final spot. He's familiar with the offense, so that gives him an edge, but Amendola has been injury prone during his pro career. The smallest setback could be all Hawkins needs to win a job on the 53-man roster.

Patriots | Dion Lewis' roster spot likely safe    Sun May 28, 11:08 AM

New England Patriots RB Dion Lewis still has a spot on the club despite the additions of Mike Gillislee and Rex Burkhead this offseason, likely as a kickoff returner and reserve running back who will play 15 to 20 snaps per game, but ESPN's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: James White is in the backfield as well, so as you can see the Patriots are jam-packed at the position. Gillislee should be playing the LeGarrette Blount role in 2017 with White as a change-of-pace back. The roles for Burkhead and Lewis on offense will be small unless injuries strike ahead of them on the depth chart.
