Patriots | Julian Edelman hopes to be returner    Sun Jul 27, 09:24 PM

New England Patriots WR Julian Edelman said he would like to be a punt returner for the team this upcoming season in addition to having a role on offense. 'That's a part of the game [punt return] that gave me an opportunity to make this team,' Edelman said. 'I love returning punts. I want to do that and if they ask me to do that, I'm going to do it.'

Footballguys view: Using Edelman as a part-time return man would make sense. However, there's no need to risk an injury by having him out there as a full-time special teams player.

The New England Patriots signed WR Cole Stanford Sunday, July 27. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Patriots | Sign Brian Tyms    Sun Jul 27, 10:05 AM

The New England Patriots signed WR Brian Tyms (Browns) Sunday, July 27. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Florida A&M in 2012, Tyms is on his fourth team. He's a camp body for the Patriots with little shot of making the final roster. Perhaps the team could sign him on the practice squad if he impresses, but even that seems doubtful.

Patriots | Waive Greg Orton     Sun Jul 27, 09:09 AM

The New England Patriots waived WR Greg Orton (Achilles') Sunday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Bad news for a player who has worked hard to stick around in the NFL. Orton will likely be placed on Injured Reserve when he clears waivers.

Patriots | Kenbrell Thompkins does not finish practice    Sat Jul 26, 10:00 PM

New England Patriots WR Kenbrell Thompkins (undisclosed) was not able to finish practice Saturday, July 26, after he slid on the ground during the later portions of practice. The training staff tried to stretch him out after the injury. It does not appear to be a serious injury.

Footballguys view: Thompkins is working to win a reserve role at the wide receiver position this year. He needs to stay healthy in order to beat out guys like Jeremy Gallon or Josh Boyce.

Patriots | Tommy Kelly limited    Sat Jul 26, 09:55 PM

New England Patriots DT Tommy Kelly (knee) participated in some of the team's walkthrough Saturday, July 26, and has been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Patriots | Vince Wilfork feels good    Sat Jul 26, 09:44 PM

New England Patriots DT Vince Wilfork (Achilles') said his surgically repaired Achilles' tendon responded well during one-on-one rush drills during practice Saturday, July 26.

Footballguys view: Getting Wilfork back will be a huge boost for the Patriots defense. He has the size to eat up double teams, and he has the quickness to get middle push as a pass-rusher.

Patriots | Greg Orton likely has torn Achilles'    Sat Jul 26, 04:32 PM

New England Patriots WR Greg Orton (Achilles') suffered an Achilles' injury Friday, July 25, that is believed to be a tear, according to a source. The injury would end his season.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the veteran here. He was a longshot to make the roster anyway, and now Orton will be out for the year and his career is likely over. Originally undrafted out of Purdue in 2009, Orton has bounced around the league--but has hung around in the NFL since then.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski will not change play    Fri Jul 25, 11:14 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) said he will not change the way he plays even though he has dealt with forearm and knee injuries in the past few years.

Footballguys view: Gronk is a top-3 tight end for fantasy owners. He's no more injury prone than guys like Julius Thomas (Broncos) or Jordan Cameron (Browns). Draft him with confidence because he can dominate week in and week out.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo struggling    Fri Jul 25, 06:56 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has struggled mightily through two days of training camp practices. The rookie has thrown three interceptions and fumbled once.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is a smart quarterback, but has some mechanical issues and occasionally takes too long getting the ball out. These are things which could be fixed, and the team has time as they aren't giving up on Tom Brady anytime soon. A nice taxi-squad or dynasty stash, Garoppolo isn't going to put any fantasy points up this year.

Patriots | Kenbrell Thompkins standing out    Fri Jul 25, 06:52 PM

New England Patriots WR Kenbrell Thompkins has stood out through two days of training camp practices, catching several diving balls along the way.

Footballguys view: Thompkins could see time early if Aaron Dobson's foot injury doesn't heal or does so slowly. Right now Thompkins isn't a fantasy factor despite this news and is no better than a long shot guy to have on your bench just in case.

Patriots | Cut Nate Byham    Fri Jul 25, 04:52 PM

The New England Patriots cut TE Nate Byham Friday, July 25.

Footballguys view: That escalated quickly. Four days after being signed, Byham was cut. We don't expect to see much of him from here on out, and certainly expect no fantasy value from him even if he lands elsewhere.

Patriots | Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski work together    Thu Jul 24, 09:18 PM

New England Patriots QB Tom Brady worked with TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) on a side field after practice Thursday, July 24, and they ran a variety of pass routes. Gronkowski did not participate in team drills during practice and will be eased back into practice.

Footballguys view: This is what those guys do. Brady and Gronkowski have an amazing connection, and it will be great to see Gronk back out on the field this year. The Patriots passing game will be more robust with Gronkowski in the game. He's a top-3 fantasy tight end with a current ADP of TE3 (3.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Vince Wilfork has no limitations    Thu Jul 24, 04:51 PM

New England Patriots DT Vince Wilfork (Achilles') said he doesn't have any limitations, or he wouldn't be practicing.

Footballguys view: Wilfork's return is literally massive for the Patriots defense, and figuratively big, too. They were playing journeymen DTs in his stead last year. Now with Wilfork, and possibly even first-round pick Dominique Easley, the middle of the Patriots defensive front will be more stout and dangerous.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited    Thu Jul 24, 12:03 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, July 24. He worked for an hour and 15 minutes before watching the rest of the activities. He didn't participate in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is still going to be eased in, and there's no guarantee that he will play in Week 1 even though he's not on the PUP to start camp. We'll monitor this closely, but if you want Gronk on your team, you'll likely have to take him in the second round - maybe even the early second.

Patriots | Greg Orton returning    Wed Jul 23, 04:34 PM

The New England Patriots re-signed free-agent WR Greg Orton to an undisclosed contract Wednesday, July 23.

Footballguys view: Orton has experience with the Patriots from last year. Orton is a good camp body, but he's unlikely to make the final roster. An undrafted free agent in 2009, Orton has no practice squad eligibility left.

Patriots | Nate Byham contract details    Wed Jul 23, 03:28 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Nate Byham signed a one-year, $645,000 contract that did not include any bonus money.

Footballguys view: Byham played for the Buccaneers over the last two seasons after beginning his career as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers in 2010. He'll compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski. His main competition will be Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski cleared    Wed Jul 23, 08:51 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) has been cleared for contact and will not be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Patriots (and for fantasy owners) here. Gronkowski is a big part of the passing game, and the way defenses play him opens things up for others catching passes from Tom Brady. Fantasy owners can look to Gronk as a top-3 tight end. His current ADP is TE3 (3.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

New England Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard (shoulder), WR Aaron Dobson (foot), WR Jeremy Gallon (undisclosed), DT Tommy Kelly (knee) and WR Matthew Slater (undisclosed) will begin training camp on the team's physically unable to perform list.

Footballguys view: Dobson is the player fantasy owners need to watch here. He had an inconsistent rookie season last year, but the team needs him to start playing up to his potential this year. Dobson could start on the outside opposite Danny Amendola this season.

Patriots | Jamie Collins bulked up    Mon Jul 21, 09:24 AM

New England Patriots LB Jamie Collins bulked up in the offseason, but he didn't admit how much weight he has gained.

Footballguys view: We'll see what Collins can look like in his second season. He's an athletic linebacker in coverage, but the added weight could have slowed him down a bit.

Patriots | Nate Byham signs    Sun Jul 20, 03:31 AM

The New England Patriots have signed free-agent TE Nate Byham (Buccaneers). Byham will likely compete with TEs Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams for a chance to back up Rob Gronkowski.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine Byham beating out either of those two. Gronkowski's injury history makes fantasy owners curious about his backup. However, as we saw last year the team changes the way they distribute the football through the air if Gronk is out.

Patriots | Two WRs expected to have chance at kick returner    Sat Jul 19, 12:25 PM

New England Patriots WRs Josh Boyce and Kenbrell Thompkins are expected to receive the chance to compete for the kick return job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Boyce needs to do something to cement his spot on the roster. His rookie season was a bust, and with the free agent addition of Brandon LaFell and seventh-round pick Jeremy Gallon Boyce is fighting for a roster spot this year. Thompkins has big-play ability, but his hands and concentration are inconsistent. We'll see if that's improved this year.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski plans to play the entire season    Sat Jul 19, 10:03 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) said he is planning on playing the whole season in 2014. 'I'm planning on playing the whole season this year,' Gronkowski said.

Footballguys view: That's the plan for everyone, but injuries happen all the time in the NFL. Gronkowski has had problems staying healthy dating back to his days in college at Arizona. If healthy for a full season, Gronkowski is easily a top-3 fantasy tight end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski not sure if he will go on PUP list    Fri Jul 18, 08:32 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) said he is not sure if he will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: It doesn't matter if he's on the PUP or not. The Patriots are going to take it easy on Gronkowski as he comes back from this injury. If healthy, Gronkowski is easily a top-3 fantasy tight end.

The New England Patriots re-signed free-agent WR Derrick X. Johnson (knee) to an undisclosed deal. The team released him after he suffered a knee injury last month. The injury has healed.

Footballguys view: Johnson has already bounced off the Patriots roster after signing as an undrafted free agent this year. The former Maine wide receiver is a camp body and a long shot to even make the practice squad.

New England Patriots DE Michael Buchanan has a good chance to make the final roster because of his special teams play. Buchanan hopes to earn a role on defense during training camp.

Footballguys view: Buchanan is known as a hustle-player. He has the raw physical ability to get off the snap cleanly and push his man back. Buchanan gets by on hustle and determination. That sounds like a player who fits the Patriots mold.

Patriots | Logan Ryan may be top option to start at CB    Sun Jul 13, 08:05 PM

Patriots | Aaron Dobson expected to be ready for camp    Sun Jul 13, 08:04 PM

It would be a surprise if New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (foot) is not ready for the start of training camp. Dobson did not participate in any offseason workouts because of offseason foot surgery.

Footballguys view: Some are painting Dobson as a potential breakout player in 2014. We just don't see it. Dobson had inconsistent hands and concentration during his time in college at Marshall, and those problems continued to plague him as a rookie last year with the Patriots. Watch him in the preseason to see if he's gotten over those problems. There is an opportunity there for him to put up decent numbers behind Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola.

Patriots | Top backup OT job up for grabs    Sat Jul 12, 08:32 PM

New England Patriots OT Marcus Cannon and OT Cameron Fleming are expected to vie for the top backup spot at the position this season. OT Nate Solder and OT Sebastian Vollmer are expected to be the starters with OT Chris Martin and OT Jordan Devey likely to be cut.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have an embarrassment of riches at the tackle position. Solder and Volmer are two of the best starters in the game today when healthy. Cannon and Fleming are both quality backups who could step in and start if need be.

Patriots | Tavon Wilson may not make team    Fri Jul 11, 08:29 PM

Patriots | Brandon Bolden may not make team    Thu Jul 10, 09:43 AM

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden is expected to be cut from the team, in the opinion of beat writer Erik Frenz.

Footballguys view: Frenz is wired in, so there is definitely something to this and it's supported by early rumors that rookie James White could very well push for carries this season. Bolden is the "big back" on the team right now and cutting him would leave the Patriots without one on the roster but it's not something they've struggled with before. Don't dump Bolden, but make sure you keep a sharp eye on our Training Camp reports (shameless plug) to see what the word is on both Bolden and White. Either might end up a decent spot flex guy.
