Patriots | Rob Gronkowski limited    Thu Jul 24, 12:03 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) was limited in practice Thursday, July 24. He worked for an hour and 15 minutes before watching the rest of the activities. He didn't participate in 7-on-7 or 11-on-11 drills.

Footballguys view: Gronkowski is still going to be eased in, and there's no guarantee that he will play in Week 1 even though he's not on the PUP to start camp. We'll monitor this closely, but if you want Gronk on your team, you'll likely have to take him in the second round - maybe even the early second.

Patriots | Greg Orton returning    Wed Jul 23, 04:34 PM

The New England Patriots re-signed free-agent WR Greg Orton to an undisclosed contract Wednesday, July 23.

Patriots | Nate Byham contract details    Wed Jul 23, 03:28 PM

Updating a previous report, New England Patriots TE Nate Byham signed a one-year, $645,000 contract that did not include any bonus money.

Footballguys view: Byham played for the Buccaneers over the last two seasons after beginning his career as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers in 2010. He'll compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Rob Gronkowski. His main competition will be Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski cleared    Wed Jul 23, 08:51 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) has been cleared for contact and will not be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Bill Belichick.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Patriots (and for fantasy owners) here. Gronkowski is a big part of the passing game, and the way defenses play him opens things up for others catching passes from Tom Brady. Fantasy owners can look to Gronk as a top-3 tight end. His current ADP is TE3 (3.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

New England Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard (shoulder), WR Aaron Dobson (foot), WR Jeremy Gallon (undisclosed), DT Tommy Kelly (knee) and WR Matthew Slater (undisclosed) will begin training camp on the team's physically unable to perform list.

Footballguys view: Dobson is the player fantasy owners need to watch here. He had an inconsistent rookie season last year, but the team needs him to start playing up to his potential this year. Dobson could start on the outside opposite Danny Amendola this season.

Patriots | Jamie Collins bulked up    Mon Jul 21, 09:24 AM

New England Patriots LB Jamie Collins bulked up in the offseason, but he didn't admit how much weight he has gained.

Footballguys view: We'll see what Collins can look like in his second season. He's an athletic linebacker in coverage, but the added weight could have slowed him down a bit.

Patriots | Nate Byham signs    Sun Jul 20, 03:31 AM

The New England Patriots have signed free-agent TE Nate Byham (Buccaneers). Byham will likely compete with TEs Michael Hoomanawanui and D.J. Williams for a chance to back up Rob Gronkowski.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine Byham beating out either of those two. Gronkowski's injury history makes fantasy owners curious about his backup. However, as we saw last year the team changes the way they distribute the football through the air if Gronk is out.

Patriots | Two WRs expected to have chance at kick returner    Sat Jul 19, 12:25 PM

New England Patriots WRs Josh Boyce and Kenbrell Thompkins are expected to receive the chance to compete for the kick return job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Boyce needs to do something to cement his spot on the roster. His rookie season was a bust, and with the free agent addition of Brandon LaFell and seventh-round pick Jeremy Gallon Boyce is fighting for a roster spot this year. Thompkins has big-play ability, but his hands and concentration are inconsistent. We'll see if that's improved this year.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski plans to play the entire season    Sat Jul 19, 10:03 AM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) said he is planning on playing the whole season in 2014. 'I'm planning on playing the whole season this year,' Gronkowski said.

Footballguys view: That's the plan for everyone, but injuries happen all the time in the NFL. Gronkowski has had problems staying healthy dating back to his days in college at Arizona. If healthy for a full season, Gronkowski is easily a top-3 fantasy tight end.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski not sure if he will go on PUP list    Fri Jul 18, 08:32 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) said he is not sure if he will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: It doesn't matter if he's on the PUP or not. The Patriots are going to take it easy on Gronkowski as he comes back from this injury. If healthy, Gronkowski is easily a top-3 fantasy tight end.

The New England Patriots re-signed free-agent WR Derrick X. Johnson (knee) to an undisclosed deal. The team released him after he suffered a knee injury last month. The injury has healed.

Footballguys view: Johnson has already bounced off the Patriots roster after signing as an undrafted free agent this year. The former Maine wide receiver is a camp body and a long shot to even make the practice squad.

Patriots | Michael Buchanan has chance to make roster    Sun Jul 13, 08:08 PM

New England Patriots DE Michael Buchanan has a good chance to make the final roster because of his special teams play. Buchanan hopes to earn a role on defense during training camp.

Footballguys view: Buchanan is known as a hustle-player. He has the raw physical ability to get off the snap cleanly and push his man back. Buchanan gets by on hustle and determination. That sounds like a player who fits the Patriots mold.

Patriots | Logan Ryan may be top option to start at CB    Sun Jul 13, 08:05 PM

Patriots | Aaron Dobson expected to be ready for camp    Sun Jul 13, 08:04 PM

It would be a surprise if New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (foot) is not ready for the start of training camp. Dobson did not participate in any offseason workouts because of offseason foot surgery.

Footballguys view: Some are painting Dobson as a potential breakout player in 2014. We just don't see it. Dobson had inconsistent hands and concentration during his time in college at Marshall, and those problems continued to plague him as a rookie last year with the Patriots. Watch him in the preseason to see if he's gotten over those problems. There is an opportunity there for him to put up decent numbers behind Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola.

Patriots | Top backup OT job up for grabs    Sat Jul 12, 08:32 PM

New England Patriots OT Marcus Cannon and OT Cameron Fleming are expected to vie for the top backup spot at the position this season. OT Nate Solder and OT Sebastian Vollmer are expected to be the starters with OT Chris Martin and OT Jordan Devey likely to be cut.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have an embarrassment of riches at the tackle position. Solder and Volmer are two of the best starters in the game today when healthy. Cannon and Fleming are both quality backups who could step in and start if need be.

Patriots | Tavon Wilson may not make team    Fri Jul 11, 08:29 PM

Patriots | Brandon Bolden may not make team    Thu Jul 10, 09:43 AM

New England Patriots RB Brandon Bolden is expected to be cut from the team, in the opinion of beat writer Erik Frenz.

Footballguys view: Frenz is wired in, so there is definitely something to this and it's supported by early rumors that rookie James White could very well push for carries this season. Bolden is the "big back" on the team right now and cutting him would leave the Patriots without one on the roster but it's not something they've struggled with before. Don't dump Bolden, but make sure you keep a sharp eye on our Training Camp reports (shameless plug) to see what the word is on both Bolden and White. Either might end up a decent spot flex guy.

Patriots | Willing to give info to Aaron Hernandez's lawyers    Wed Jul 9, 04:14 PM

The New England Patriots are willing to give the lawyers for free-agent TE Aaron Hernandez (Patriots) 317 pages of information that they have asked for but do not want to give up scouting reports on him. Judge Ramond Veary said he believes the scouting reports are relevant to the case. Andrew Phelan, attorney for the Patriots, has given Hernandez's lawyers the option to review the psychological assessment on Hernandez in his office. Another hearing will take place July 22 to determine if the team will have to give up their scouting reports to Hernandez's defense team.

Patriots | Optimism Aaron Dobson could be ready for training camp    Tue Jul 8, 04:30 PM

New England Patriots WR Aaron Dobson (foot) could be ready for for the start of training camp, according to a league source. It is still too early to know his status for sure, but this is the first time there has been optimism he could be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Dobson has already lost an offseason, and this makes it sound like some of training camp could be in jeopardy, although his outlook is becoming more positive. He isn't as exciting of a late-round sleeper coming off of this injury, but if he can show that he's all the way back in the preseason, he'll be worth considering again.

Patriots | Zach Moore could be part of two-year plan    Tue Jul 8, 01:35 PM

Patriots | Chandler Jones could have huge year    Tue Jul 8, 08:52 AM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones could have a monster year if the team can reduce his snap count. He had 11.5 sacks and played more than 90 percent of the defensive snaps last season. DE Will Smith was brought in to help keep Jones fresh.

Footballguys view: Jones becomes especially enticing around the top of your IDP board if first-round pick Dominique Easley is ready for Week 1. JJ Watt/Jadeveon Clowney and Robert Quinn/Aaron Donald have gotten more ink, but Jones and Easley might be just as lethal on Sunday.

Patriots | Bryan Stork could compete for starting job    Sun Jul 6, 11:07 PM

New England Patriots C Bryan Stork may be a legitimate candidate for the starting center job during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Patriots offensive line was porous at times last year, and center Ryan Wendell was one of the big reasons why. Stork pushing Wendell to start after he got no interest on the free agent market is probably a positive development for the Patriots, but it does highlight the weakness at the position.

Link to story

Patriots | Dominque Easley could be ready for camp    Sun Jul 6, 11:02 PM

New England Patriots DT Dominique Easley (knee) could be ready to participate at the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Easley is just as talented as the #13 overall pick, Aaron Donald, but he is coming off of his second ACL tear (one to each knee). He returned for the season opener in 2012 following a late November ACL tear in 2011, so he could be ready to play week 1 and make an immediate impact for the Patriots. If your IDP league has DT broken out as a separate position, Easley is definitely worth a pick late in rookie drafts.

Patriots | Rob Gronkowski in line for season    Sat Jul 5, 04:57 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski (knee) appears to be on track for the start of the season.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Patriots here. Gronkowski is a key piece of the passing game, and the team needs him healthy so they can make a deep playoff run again this year. Fantasy owners know they get a top talent with Gronkowski if healthy. His current ADP is TE3 (3.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Patriots | Jeremy Gallon could help out on special teams    Thu Jul 3, 08:28 PM

New England Patriots WR Jeremy Gallon's ability to return kicks and punts could improve his chances of making the final roster this season. RB LeGarrette Blount was the team's main kick returner last year, but he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Gallon is a great player to keep an eye on in deep dynasty leagues. He has quickness, speed and elusiveness which make him a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. Gallon can get open with ease, and he's dangerous after the catch. This skill also helps him greatly as a return man.
