San Francisco 49ers LB Dan Skuta (foot) is not expected to need surgery on the foot injury that bothered him during the 2013 season. Skuta met with a foot specialist earlier this offseason and was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis.

Updating previous reports, retired LB Rolando McClain failed his conditioning tests during his workout with the Baltimore Ravens. The test consisted of six timed 150-yard runs.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be shocked by this news. McClain was a bust for many reasons as a pro, and certainly was never a player who had outstanding conditioning. His comeback won't go further than the refrigerator if he can't get in better shape.

Retired LB Rolando McClain (Ravens) worked out for the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday, April 15, as he attempts a comeback. The workout wasn't a smooth one in terms of conditioning, and he has a lot of rust, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: McClain showed rust when he was active. It's no surprise he wouldn't be sharp during a comeback attempt.

Denver Broncos LB Nate Irving appears to be the leading candidate to start at middle linebacker at this time, but the team is expected to select a middle linebacker during the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We're expecting the Broncos to add a middle linebacker in the first three rounds of the 2014 NFL draft. That rookie will compete with Irving and Steven Johnson for the starting job.

McClain said he is scheduled to meet with Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome Friday, April 4, to discuss the possibility of returning to the team. He plans on attending offseason workouts if he is allowed to return.

Footballguys view: The Giants defense played well down the stretch in 2013, but they need youth and they need some playmakers. McClain had some success with the Baltimore Ravens but not quite consistently enough to stay with the team. We'll quickly see what defensive coordinator Perry Fewell gets out of the young veteran.

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib and Buffalo Bills LB Brandon Spikes accused the New England Patriots of filing false injury reports during their time with the team. "The Patriots have their way of reporting stuff, but I haven't had a hip problem since Tampa," Talib said. "The injury I had was actually a quad injury. It was reported as a hip injury, but that's how they do things.

Footballguys view: This comes as no surprise to anyone that has tried to decipher Bill Belichick's injury updates.

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (neck) has been medically cleared to participate in offseason workouts, according to a source. Lee has started individual workouts at the team's facility. Lee missed the final three games of the 2013 season because of torn ligaments in his neck.

Footballguys view: Lee is one of the very best inside linebackers in the league, and he is paid like one, but injuries have been a big problem, causing him to play only 17 games over the last two seasons.

New York Giants LB Jameel McClain has a two-year deal with a base value of $4.5 million with escalators that can push up to $6 million. The contract includes a $600,000 signing bonus, base salaries of $1.375 million (2014) and $1.75 million (2015), and a $400,000 roster bonus in 2015.

Footballguys view: McClain is a starting quality linebacker who basically lost a year of his career to a neck injury. He could start for the linebacker-starved Giants.
