Bengals | Vincent Rey trimming down    Sun Jul 24, 08:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vincent Rey has dropped almost 20 pounds this offseason using a food journal and sticking to 'The Caveman Diet,' consisting of meat, vegetables and fruit.

49ers | Michael Wilhoite has chance to start    Fri Jul 22, 07:51 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Michael Wilhoite probably will enter training camp as the leading candidate for one of the inside linebacker jobs but will have to compete with LBs Gerald Hodges and Ray Ray Armstrong for the job. All three players could receive playing time during the season depending on the opponent.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have competition for starting spots all over their roster, which isn't a great sign on a roster bereft of proven talent. The defense has plummeted since being comparable to the Seahawks a few short years ago.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman looks to lead league    Thu Jul 21, 02:22 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is two years removed from left knee surgery, and he intends to lead the NFL in tackles like he did in 2015. Bowman reportedly looked sharp in offseason workouts, and he will be the centerpiece of the defense which is expected to be slightly improved.

Footballguys view: Bowman should be a force this year and the defense will have to be the strength of this team as the offense is a mess. We like Bowman in IDP leagues this year and think he is finally back to his upper end of potential.

Rams | Alec Ogletree could elevate defense    Wed Jul 20, 10:27 PM

Los Angeles Rams LB Alec Ogletree (ankle) was on the verge of a breakout season last year before suffering an ankle injury. Beat writer Nick Wagoner says Ogletree brings a level of athleticism and speed to his new position that could help elevate the defense to the lofty expectations it has had the past couple of seasons.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain could stick around    Mon Jul 18, 05:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain may not be done as a Cowboy, according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones believes Dallas hasn't seen the last of the linebacker despite his 10-game suspension and considering the fact that McClain is only under contract with Dallas for 2016. LB Justin Durant was signed to fill the void left by McClain's suspension.

Cowboys | Justin Durant re-signs with Dallas    Mon Jul 18, 03:29 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Justin Durant re-signed to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Durant comes back to the Cowboys after one ho-hum year with the Falcons in 2015. He gives the team valuable veteran depth, and there's a chance he could start for them--especially with Rolando McClain suspended 10 games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Panthers | No worries about Luke Kuechly     Sat Jul 16, 09:36 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) is 'itching' to go, according to defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, and McDermott said Kuechly knows what he needs to do to be ready for the start of the season.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Kuechly underwent the surgery on his shoulder back in February, and he'll be near full strength for Week 1 of the regular season. Even though he's 'itching' to go, we have a feeling the Panthers are going to be quite cautious with their superstar LB as they go through training camp and the preseason.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain's future uncertain    Sat Jul 16, 01:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain's future with the Cowboys remains in limbo. Owner Jerry Jones has supported McClain even in light of the news of his 10-game suspension this season, but many in the organization want McClain released.

Footballguys view: It's another year and there's more trouble for McClain. Jones said releasing McClain would be difficult for the Cowboys financially. McClain signed a one-year, $4 million contract this offseason that included a $750,000 signing bonus.

Jaguars | Myles Jack may see time at OLB    Fri Jul 15, 08:30 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Myles Jack worked at middle linebacker during offseason workouts but could receive playing time at strongside linebacker during the season. Jack will be on the field when the team is in their nickel and dime packages.

Footballguys view: Jack can do whatever the Jaguars want him to do. He's got high football intelligence, the speed to capture most any opponent and the agility to cover consistently.

Dolphins | Kiko Alonso open to playing TE    Thu Jul 14, 12:14 AM

Miami Dolphins LB Kiko Alonso (knee) said his knee is 100 percent recovered, and the coaching staff saw him in minicamp to confirm this was true. He also played tight end in high school, and feels he has something to contribute on offense. 'We have good tight ends in Miami, 'he said, 'but if the Dolphins need me for a specific play, I can move on that side of the ball. I've already told the coaches that if they want me out there in a goal-line situation, I'm ready to jump into the field. I have some specific plays at hand, but I won't reveal them.'

Eagles | Stephen Tulloch unlikely to Eagles    Wed Jul 13, 01:13 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent LB Stephen Tulloch (Lions) is unlikely to land with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Footballguys view: It's a bit surprising given Tulloch's history with DC Jim Schwartz and the Eagles need on defense. Tulloch is a two-down thumper who can bring veteran leadership to any team he goes to. Perhaps he'll be able to find a new home sometime during training camp.

Cowboys | Justin Durant in talks with Dallas    Mon Jul 11, 10:12 AM

Free-agent LB Justin Durant (Falcons) is in discussions with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, July 11, and could sign soon.

Footballguys view: Durant has been with the Cowboys before in 2013 and 2014. In those two seasons, he started 12 games for Dallas before moving on to the Falcons for the 2015 season. He was bad in 12 starts for the Falcons last year and hasn't attracted much interest on the open market. The Cowboys are desperate on defense with LB Rolando McClain suspended the first 10 games of 2016.

Eagles | Philly may look at Stephen Tulloch    Wed Jul 6, 06:29 PM

Free-agent LB Stephen Tulloch (Lions) could be an option for the Philadelphia Eagles because they do not have many veteran backups behind the starting linebackers.

Footballguys view: The move would make sense for a team like the Eagles. Not only do they have a need for better depth, but Tulloch played for defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz in the past.

Lions | Stephen Tulloch officially released    Tue Jul 5, 05:00 PM

Detroit Lions LB Stephen Tulloch was released Tuesday, July 5, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Tulloch underwent arthroscopic ankle surgery this offseason and did not pass a physical until Tuesday, July 5th, hence the Lions waiting to release him. The Lions would have owed the veteran LB an injury settlement had they released him before the failed physical designation. There should be at least a few teams interested in Tulloch as a run-stuffer before training camp.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain suspended 10 games    Thu Jun 30, 03:03 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain was suspended 10 games Thursday, June 30, for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Is this a news post from 2015? No, it just seems like that since McClain was suspended part of last season as well. The Cowboys defense was already a huge concern and it continues to get worse in Dallas.

NFL | Curtis Lofton hopes to play    Thu Jun 23, 04:45 PM

Former Oakland Raiders LB Curtis Lofton (ankle, knee) underwent offseason surgery on his ankle and knee, but he hopes to continue playing in 2016.

Footballguys view: Lofton is more of a downhill thumper than a versatile linebacker, and his surgeries probably won't help his case. He will likely have to wait for an injury to a starter before he gets a call.

Bengals | Donte Whitner being recruited to CIN    Wed Jun 22, 01:11 PM

Free-agent SS Donte Whitner (Browns) is being recruited by Cincinnati Bengals LB Karlos Dansby to sign with the Bengals.

Footballguys view: Whitner was not brought back by the Browns, but he might stay in the division. The Bengals have an opening at safety that may come down to a battle between the inexperienced Shawn Williams, who did start four games last year and 2015 sixth round pick Derron Smith.

Packers | Sam Barrington staying patient    Tue Jun 21, 07:35 PM

Green Bay Packers LB Sam Barrington (foot) said it has taken an 'immense amount of patience' to rehabilitate from a serious foot injury he suffered last season. Barrington said he used the time off to find ways to get better. The expected starting middle linebacker is still focusing on growing as a player. Barrington acknowledged that whether or not he starts will be based on if he prepares himself the right way.

Footballguys view: Barrington had somewhat of a breakout season in 2014 before suffering this foot injury in 2015. He's almost back in action, but needs to prove that he can stay healthy after twice being placed on Injured Reserve since he came into the league as a run-stuffing seventh-round pick in 2013.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 18, 03:28 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) should be ready to go for the start of training camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Getting their superstar LB at full strength will greatly benefit the Panthers defense. They have a rock-solid front seven on defense, but we will be watching to see how their secondary comes together after parting ways with former franchise player CB Josh Norman. Kuechly had surgery in February for a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Broncos | Denver extends Brandon Marshall    Tue Jun 14, 04:23 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall agreed to a four-year extension Tuesday, June 14, according to a source. It includes a $10 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Marshall was cut three times by the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the Broncos scooped him up in 2013 and he's developed into one of their best players on the league's best defense. He'll take over at WILL for the Broncos this year with Danny Trevathan (Bears) moving on in free agency.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall talking deal with DEN    Fri Jun 10, 02:44 AM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent LB Brandon M. Marshall is in advanced contract negotiations with the team before his deadline Wednesday, June 15. He has a second-round, $2.553 tender attached to him. If he doesn't sign by Wednesday, Marshall's deal could be reduced to a 10% raise from the $585,000 salary he made last season, although the Broncos would probably re-up him for the $2.553 million.

Footballguys view: Marshall is taking over at weak-side inside linebacker since Danny Trevathan (Bears) moved on in free agency. We have a feeling the team will be able to get something done with Marshall before next Wednesday's deadline.

He definitely is a very instinctive player,' head coach Mike McCarthy said Monday, June 6.

Colts | Nate Irving much lighter    Mon May 30, 01:23 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Nate Irving (knee) has lost 30 pounds this offseason after playing at 260 pounds last season. Irving and LB Sio Moore are expected to start opposite LB D'Qwell Jackson this year. Jackson said he can already tell that Irving is moving more confidently and has more explosion in his movement.

Footballguys view: Irving has a nose for the ball and at a lighter weight he should be better as a coverage player in space. The battle between Moore and Irving will have to be won in training camp.

Bills | No deals for Andre Roberts, Jamari Lattimore    Fri May 20, 07:25 PM

Free-agent WR Andre Roberts (Redskins) and LB Jamari Lattimore (Jets) met with the Buffalo Bills earlier this week, but both players left the visits without a contract.

Footballguys view: The Bills are kicking the tires on Roberts as they will be missing WR Sammy Watkins until the start of the regular season. They could always end up signing Roberts at some time before training camp if they need an extra body at the position. Roberts did nothing during his time with Washington, but there should be at least a few teams interested in the veteran receiver.

Ravens | Zach Orr could start in 2016    Fri May 20, 03:37 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB Zach Orr is the leading candidate to start at inside linebacker in 2016, but he will have to win the job during training camp. LBs Arthur Brown and Albert McClellan could also be options for the job, but the team may also consider signing a veteran free agent if no one on the roster is able to handle the job.

Footballguys view: Brown has been a huge disappointment since being a second round pick in 2013. He could be a late bloomer, but if he can't clearly beat out players like Orr and McClellan at this point, it's time to move on in even the deepest of IDP leagues.

Bills | Jamari Lattimore visits    Thu May 19, 07:45 PM

Bills | Reggie Ragland to compete in the middle    Fri Apr 29, 08:28 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Reggie Ragland will compete with LBs Preston Brown and Zach Brown for the starting middle linebacker spot in the Bills' 3-4 defense. General manager Doug Whaley views Ragland as a leader, though, and will bring something to the defense the Bills need, according to Whaley.

Footballguys view: They didn't take him for his singing voice, so we assume that the Bills have plans for him. Further, the linebackers were bad last year so every position could be up for grabs.
