Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson's contract will not be extended before the new league year begins in mid-March. Johnson is Kansas City's all-time leading tackler.

Footballguys view: It's going to be weird seeing Johnson wear another jersey. A first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2005, Johnson has been a long-time tackling machine in Kansas City. He's not quite the player he used to be, but Johnson is still capable of making an impact as a part time player. Johnson will have interest on the open market.

Chiefs | Two Chiefs LBs could be cut    Fri Feb 9, 12:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson and LB Tamba Hali could be released this offseason, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2005, it would be odd to see Johnson playing in another uniform. He graded out positively in 2017 but the Chiefs seem intent to move on with Reggie Ragland in Johnson's spot. Hali barely played last year (116 snaps) and is not the same player he used to be. Releasing both would free up over $15 million on the Chiefs cap.

Patriots | Free agency decisions ahead for New England    Mon Feb 5, 01:55 PM

The New England Patriots face the prospect of losing several key free agents. The Patriots have to address key impending free agents in OTs Nate Solder, Cameron Fleming and LaAdrian Waddle, along with RB Rex Burkhead, WR Danny Amendola, CB Malcolm Butler, WR/ST Matthew Slater and RB Dion Lewis. New England is projected to have approximately $17 million in salary cap space. TE Dwayne Allen, TE Martellus Bennett, DT Alan Branch, LB David Harris and RB Mike Gillislee all could be released to create more cap space.

Footballguys view: Solder is their franchise left tackle, and there's not a lot of talent at the position in this free agent class. There is speculation that Solder will end up retiring.

The New England Patriots have declared DL Alan Branch, WR Bernard Reedy, OL Cole Croston, LB David Harris, TE Jacob Hollister, WR Kenny Britt, RB Mike Gillislee inactive for Week 21.

Footballguys view: Mike Gillislee was seen as a possible sly Patriots pilfer from a division rival a la the Chris Hogan deal, but it ended up being a bust because Gillislee was ineffective or hurt for most of the season. He's unlikely to be back next year.

Jets | Two Jets players start contract talks    Sat Feb 3, 06:47 PM

The New York Jets have started contract talks with impending free-agent LB Demario Davis and CB Morris Claiborne.

Footballguys view: Davis was basically free because the team got him for failed safety Calvin Pryor. Claiborne was outstanding at times and played in the most games he has appeared in since 2012 (15). He may cost more than his 2017 five million dollar price tag.

Packers | Jake Ryan to receive pay raise    Wed Jan 31, 07:18 PM

Green Bay Packers LB Jake Ryan was originally scheduled to make $705,000 in 2018, but his salary will increase to $1.905 million because he qualified for the proven performance escalator. Ryan received the escalator because he played at least 35 percent of the snaps in two of his first three seasons.

Footballguys view: Ryan started 22 games over the last two seasons and at least 10 in each of them. He has been a bargain although he hasn't proven himself as a long term starter despite the title of the escalator.

Dolphins | Raekwon McMillan may start soon    Sun Jan 28, 04:33 PM

Miami Dolphins LB Raekwon McMillan (knee) is expected to be the starting middle linebacker once he is recovered from his torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Ravens | C.J. Mosley not worried about contract    Sat Jan 27, 05:56 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB C.J. Mosley said he is not worried that he is entering the final year of his contract and believes the two sides will reach a new deal at some point.

Footballguys view: Mosley has been a home run despite the changing cast of LBs next to him during his rookie deal. The Ravens cap situation is getting better, so they should be able to keep him even if he's one of the highest paid linebackers in the game, as he should be.

Redskins | Washington still wants Zach Brown back    Sat Jan 27, 05:33 PM

The Washington Redskins still want to re-sign impending free-agent LB Zach Brown this offseason even though they re-signed LB Mason Foster earlier this week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Brown was very cheap (2.55 million) last year on a one year deal and had another strong season, so it is unlikely that he will be that inexpensive this year. Brown wants to get market value for his services and Washington seems unwilling to pay that, so Keim expects Brown to hit free agency, but there's still time for the situation to change.

Washington Redskins LB Zach Brown will be a free agent this offseason, and he will likely have to to lower his asking price in order to return to Washington in 2018.

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (undisclosed) won't play in the Pro Bowl due to an undisclosed injury. The injury isn't considered serious, according to team sources.

Footballguys view: As is becoming more frequent, top players bow out of what is not the prestige event it used to be, though the actual play has never been all that incredible. Still, it was once something any player wanted to do, and now it seems to be a lot of them are taking a hard pass.

Raiders | Oakland wants NaVorro Bowman back    Wed Jan 17, 03:04 PM

I love smart guys who love playing football,' Guenther said of Bowman. 'Hopefully we can get him back in the fold and keep him a Raider.

Footballguys view: The 49ers had run out of use for Bowman and he was granted his release in a stunning mid-season move. If he can remain a starter, Bowman will still have legs in IDP leagues.
