Giants | Jasper Brinkley on track to start    Mon Aug 22, 07:23 PM

New York Giants LB Jasper Brinkley appears to be the leading candidate to start at middle linebacker this season because of his ability to stop the run.

Footballguys view: Brinkley is your traditional two-down thumper. He does a good job of finding the ball-carrier and Brinkley arrives at the play with natural violence.

Broncos | Zaire Anderson pushing for time    Sun Aug 21, 11:40 PM

Denver Broncos LB Todd Davis is the favorite to replace LB Danny Trevathan as the other starter at inside linebacker next to LB Brandon M. Marshall, but LB Zaire Anderson is making a case for playing time with a strong preseason.

Footballguys view: Davis is a fine player, but he's a two-down player and will come off the field in nickel situations. The Broncos used their nickel defense last year around 65 percent of the time. Anderson is a violent player with an attitude. He spent last year on the team's practice squad, but it's looking more and more like he's going to make the 53-man roster this year.

Jets | Darron Lee not a starter just yet    Wed Aug 17, 11:51 PM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee worked with the first-team defense earlier in the week, but he didn't spend much time on the top unit Wednesday, Aug. 17. Head coach Todd Bowles said 'we like to mix and match people,' so Lee shouldn't be considered a starter yet. However, he has looked good and made plays in training camp and might be closing in on a starting job if the good play continues.

Footballguys view: Lee has flashed, and many beat writers think he will end up in the starting defense, but like Bowles said, the Jets move folks around. Starter or not, it looks very much like he will be on the field a ton.

Jets | Darron Lee impresses    Thu Aug 11, 11:01 PM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee 'flashed quite a bit' in a 17-13 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 11, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: There were many skeptics about whether Lee would be able to fill the role head coach Todd Bowles envisioned for his first round pick but this is a good first step towards confirming Bowles' plan. OF course, Lee faced a lot of low-end players and will have to show us more on a consistent basis, but we liked what we saw.

Bills | Reggie Ragland out for season    Wed Aug 10, 09:19 AM

Buffalo Bills LB Reggie Ragland (knee) will have surgery to repair his anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the 2016 season.

Footballguys view: The Bills will be without their first two picks for at least the first month, with first-round pick Shaq Lawson coming back from shoulder surgery. Ragland was going to be a force against the run, so the strong Bills defensive line will have to pick up the slack.

Packers | Two more Packers activated     Tue Aug 9, 06:30 PM

Green Bay Packers WR Ty Montgomery (ankle) and LB Sam Barrington (foot) were activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, Aug. 9. They will practice on a limited basis.

Footballguys view: Montgomery is a player to watch in dynasty leagues. He's competing with guys like Jared Abbrederis and Jeff Janis to be the team's no.3 WR behind Jordy Nelson and Randall Cobb. We like his run-after-the-catch ability, but this ankle injury has put him behind in the competition.

Bills | Kevin Reddick placed on IR    Tue Aug 9, 12:39 AM

The Buffalo Bills placed LB Kevin Reddick (undisclosed) on the Reserve/Injured list from Waived/Injured Monday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: While he wasn't nearly as essential to the Bills' plans as second-round pick Reggie Ragland, Reddick was competing to be one of his top backups. His injury was probably part of the reason the Bills signed two linebackers this week.

Bills | Reggie Ragland has partial tear of ACL    Sun Aug 7, 09:36 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Reggie Ragland (knee) has a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee, according to an initial MRI. He will have a second opinion on the injury Monday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: The Bills signing two inside linebackers today makes even more sense with the revealing of this information. The team could be without their first two picks for most of the 2016 season, as first-round pick Shaq Lawson is still recovering from shoulder surgery and not due back until at least October.

Bills | David Hawthorne to sign with Buffalo    Sun Aug 7, 01:20 PM

Free-agent LB David Hawthorne (Saints) signed with the Buffalo Bills Sunday, Aug. 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Bills have had multiple injuries at inside linebacker, so they need bodies just to run their practices. We'll wait to see the severity of Reggie Ragland injury before speculating on the potential value of other Bills inside linebackers in IDP leagues.

Ravens | Kamalei Correa overwhelmed?     Sat Aug 6, 10:17 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB Kamalei Correa was listed as the backup to weakside linebacker Zach Orr on the first depth chart released Friday, Aug. 5, and defensive coordinator Dean Pees said they may be preventing Correa from becoming comfortable by asking him to play too many positions.

Footballguys view: Correa has been getting under the skin of his teammates in a good way in camp, but he has been learning multiple positions, so Pees isn't offbase here. Correa still projects as a long-term starter, and one who can provide versatility to a defense that has aging outside linebackers and one unproven inside linebacker position.

Eagles | Philadelphia pursuing Stephen Tulloch     Sat Aug 6, 08:19 PM

Free-agent LB Stephen Tulloch (Lions) is in 'heavy negotiations' to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Tulloch would be good depth for the Eagles at linebacker, where they lack experience. Tulloch had some of his best years under Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz when he was head coach of the Lions, so the Eagles know what they are getting.
