Buffalo Bills DT Marcell Dareus (leg) is not playing in the third preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29, because of a sore leg.

Carolina Panthers DE Charles Johnson (calf) and DT Kawann Short (back) will not play in the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Carolina is a solid defense, and should be a borderline No. 1 team defense in fantasy. These are just maintenance rests and shouldn't impact whether you grab this defense or not.

Green Bay Packers DE Letroy Guion will be suspended for the first three games of the regular season after his appeal was apparently denied.

Carolina Panthers DT Star Lotulelei (foot) is expected to be ready for the season opener.

Footballguys view: Getting the big man back in the middle will be a boost for the defense. Lotulelei is a mountain of a man, and his presence forces backs in another lane and into the waiting arms of linebackers like Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly.

Detroit Lions DT Haloti Ngata (hamstring) is expected to return before the beginning of the regular season, but he's unlikely to play in the first preseason game.

Footballguys view: Ngata is taking the place of Ndamukong Suh on the defensive line. He's a seasoned veteran and doesn't need a ton of reps in the preseason. Hamstring injuries can linger, so expect the Lions to take it easy on Ngata.

Buffalo Bills CB Ron Brooks (ankle), DT Marcell Dareus (back) and WR Chris Hogan (finger) suffered injuries during practice Friday, Aug. 7, but head coach Rex Ryan does not think any of the injuries are serious.

Footballguys view: Dareus is the one we flinch when we hear about, given how important he is to the defense. Hopefully, Ryan is correct and the injury is minor. However, back injuries can linger for a long time.

Bills | Charles Clay not making a good impression    Fri Aug 7, 12:25 PM

Buffalo Bills TE Charles Clay, who signed a five-year, $38 million deal in the offseason, has been mostly invisible so far at training camp, according to sources. The tight end group led by TEs Clay, Chris Gragg, Nick O'Leary and Matthew Mulligan haven't been blocking very well, either, leading head coach Rex Ryan to try DT Kyle D. Williams as a tight end for better blocking.

Footballguys view: Clay could be a good fantasy tight end with his skillset and talent, but that's not going to happen in this Buffalo offense this season. If you're looking for a talented tight end with a new team, try the guy who replaced Clay in Miami--Jordan Cameron.

Detroit Lions DT Haloti Ngata (undisclosed) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Monday, Aug. 3.

Panthers | Star Lotulelei carted off    Mon Aug 3, 01:10 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Star Lotulelei (foot) was carted off the practice field Monday, Aug. 3, with foot soreness. He underwent surgery in 2014 to repair a broken bone in the same foot and was seen wearing a walking boot when he emerged from the locker room.

Footballguys view: This is a terrible development for a team that aims to keep games low-scoring and win with a strong defensive front seven. The Panthers lost both regular season games he missed last year.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) underwent surgery on his herniated disk July 15.

Footballguys view: Head coach Andy Reid said there's a chance Poe is able to return in the early part of the season depending on how he recovers. We'd say that's quite optimistic. Earlier reports indicated Poe could begin the season on the PUP list, forcing him out of the first six weeks of the year.

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) is dealing with a herniated disk in his back and has had two epidurals. The extent of and timetable for the injury were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Chiefs here. Poe is likely to start the regular season on the PUP list, thus missing the first six week. We'll see if he's ready to return from this back injury after that. Jaye Howard will fill in for however long Poe is out.

Steelers | Two could compete for NT job    Sun Jul 19, 09:48 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Daniel McCullers could push DT Steve McLendon for the starting nose tackle job during training camp.

Footballguys view: McLendon has started at nose tackle for the Steelers over the last two years. A sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in the 2014 NFL draft, we'll see if McCullers can challenge Mclendon for the starting job in training camp and the preseason.

Browns | Phil Taylor expects to be full participant    Mon Jul 13, 06:36 PM

Cleveland Browns DT Phil Taylor (knee) said he will be able to fully participate once training camp begins. Taylor is coming off a major knee surgery he had last season.

Footballguys view: Taylor is a talented defensive tackle when healthy, but staying healthy has been a problem for him. Over the last three years, Taylor has not played a full 16-game season. He was limited to five games in 2014.

Browns | Phil Taylor misses minicamp    Sun Jun 21, 02:51 PM

Cleveland Browns DT Phil Taylor (knee) did not participate during the team's minicamp last week, but the team believes he will be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Taylor is a talented and disruptive player in the middle of the defensive line when healthy. The problem is he hasn't been able to stay healthy in recent years. Over the last three seasons, Taylor has missed a total of 20 games. He's due over $5 million this year, but none of that is guaranteed. Taylor could get cut if he doesn't impress in training camp.

Raiders | Mario Edwards Jr. signed    Fri Jun 19, 06:28 PM

Oakland Raiders second-round pick DE Mario Edwards Jr. signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, June 19. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Edwards isn't much of a pass-rusher, but he does have a powerful base to stand strong as a run-stuffer. In college at Florida State, Edwards didn't ever truly play up to his potential...and that potentially sky-high level remains untapped.

Patriots | Malcom Brown signs deal    Fri Jun 19, 12:48 PM

New England Patriots DT Malcom Brown signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, June 19.

Footballguys view: Brown does a good job of quickly getting off the line of scrimmage after the snap. He has the ability to push blockers back into the quarterback. Brown can control his man at the point of attack, and he does a good job of finding the running back in the backfield.
