49ers | Earl Mitchell expected to help run defense    Sat Feb 25, 02:23 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Earl Mitchell is expected to be used as a run-stuffing defensive tackle for the 49ers. The 49ers defense finished last in the NFL in rushing yards allowed by allowing a franchise-record 2,654 rushing yards during the season.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is a big-bodied run-stuffer who can work as a two-down player when healthy. His time with the Dolphins was seen as a disappointment, especially last season, but the 49ers must believe he can be an impact player for them in 2017 and beyond.

Falcons | Jonathan Babineaux may not be back    Mon Feb 20, 06:58 PM

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent DT Jonathan Babineaux may not return to the Falcons next season even if he decides not to retire this offseason.

Footballguys view: Babineaux has been one of the best and most consistent defensive linemen in team history. Losing him would leave the team with Grady Jarrett and Tyson Jackson inside at defensive tackle. It's a deep class on the defensive line in the draft this year, so expect the Falcons to spend a pick or two up front.

Saints | Nick Fairley to test free agency    Sun Feb 12, 11:12 AM

New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley will test the open market before considering a new deal with the club once free agency begins next month.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Lions in 2011, Fairley signed a one-year deal with the Saints last year to rehab his stock after a poor showing with the Rams in 2015. This past season, Fairley played in 16 games totaling 143 tackles and 6.5 sacks. Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Sylvester Williams likely will test the free-agent market this offseason.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe may be too expensive for Chiefs    Fri Feb 10, 04:18 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe may be too expensive for the Chiefs to re-sign if they re-sign impending free-agent SS Eric Berry before Poe.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs would like to re-sign both, but Berry is believed to be the team's top priority at this point. The team is strapped for cap space with only $4 million to work with at this time. They'll move around some money to get at least one of these guys signed, but signing both is likely a pipe dream.

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DT Kawann Short probably will receive the franchise tag this offseason, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Short provides all-important pass rush presence from inside and provides an excellent complement to Star Lotulelei. The Panthers were willing to let Josh Norman go last season in part to keep a player like Short, but the way things went with Norman should inform Short on how to proceed in negotiations.

Ravens | Brandon Williams may accept small discount    Thu Feb 2, 02:34 PM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent DT Brandon Williams said he would be willing to accept a small discount from the Ravens as long as their offer is close to the other offers he receives in free agency. Williams said he knows what to expect from the Ravens, which would be a factor for him if the offers are similar.

Footballguys view: Williams is a huge body inside on the defensive line that almost any team that runs any front will need. Except when limited by cap issues, the Ravens have been very good at deciding when to let free agents go, getting the most compensatory draft picks of any team since that measure was instituted.

Redskins | Bennie Logan could be FA target for WAS    Mon Jan 30, 12:02 PM

Impending free-agent DT Bennie Logan will be targeted by the Washington Redskins if the Philadelphia Eagles allow him to hit the open market, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Logan is a durable run stuffer who Washington knows well from facing him twice a year. The Eagles have decent depth behind Logan, including Beau Allen, so they might not prioritize him in free agency. Washington has a lot more cap room than Philadelphia, but they need to make a decision on quarterback Kirk Cousins, so that complicate big free agent decisions. Chances are, Logan will end up somewhere other than Philadelphia next season.

Ravens | Baltimore wants Brandon Williams back    Sat Jan 28, 04:16 PM

Baltimore Ravens impending free agent DT Brandon Williams is a player the team will try to re-sign this offseason since he one of the team's top defensive players, according to assistant general manager Eric DeCosta.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick for the Ravens in 2013, Williams is set to earn a big contract on the open market. In fact, if (when?) the Panthers franchise tag K.K. Short, Williams could be the best interior defender available. According to OverTheCap.com, the Ravens have the 5th-least amount of salary cap space ($15.3 million) entering the free agency period. Williams price tag is likely to get beyond their reach in a hurry.
