Dolphins | Could pursue Ndamukong Suh    Mon Mar 2, 07:19 PM

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh could be pursued by the Miami Dolphins this offseason if he becomes a free agent, in the opinion of NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: There's going to be a ton of teams after Suh if he reaches the open market. The Dolphins are going to have to get in line for Suh if that happens.

Buccaneers | Tampa not interested in Ndamukong Suh    Mon Mar 2, 10:35 AM

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh is not a player the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are willing to break the bank on in free agency.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers already have a fantastic DT in Gerald McCoy. When healthy, he can be nearly as disruptive as Suh.

Lions | No tag for Ndamukong Suh    Mon Mar 2, 09:39 AM

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh will not receive the franchise tag Monday, March 2.

Footballguys view: The Lions must feel pretty confident that they're going to keep Suh around with a new contract. If he hits the open market on March 10th, Suh will be one of the hottest names available. Teams can start negotiating with soon-to-be free agents on March 7th, so the clock is ticking for the Lions to get something done.

Dolphins | Kenrick Ellis might be backup plan    Sun Mar 1, 08:07 PM

The Miami Dolphins might have an interest in free-agent DT Kenrick Ellis (Jets) if they miss on a few other bigger names, as Ellis has a background with executive vice president of football operations Mike Tannenbaum.

Footballguys view: Ellis has incredible strength and ferocity on the defensive line. He's yet to fully play up to his potential, but the Dolphins could see his potential and feel all he needs is a second chance. If Ellis can stay healthy, he could be a nice part-time player in the middle of the line.

Dolphins | Ndamukong Suh unlikely to be added    Sun Mar 1, 08:06 PM

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh is not expected to be a serious option for the Miami Dolphins, according to beat writer Barry Jackson.

Footballguys view: Suh is likely to stay with the Lions. Thinking he could end up anywhere else is nothing but a pipe dream.

Dolphins | Corey Peters on Miami's radar    Sun Mar 1, 08:06 PM

Free-agent DT Corey Peters (Falcons) is a player on the radar of the Miami Dolphins heading into free agency, a source said.

Footballguys view: Peters could help the Dolphins on the defensive line. The Falcons are going to try and keep him around, but they may not be able to afford him as they revamp their defensive line.

Dolphins | Terrance Knighton might be too costly    Sun Mar 1, 08:05 PM

The Miami Dolphins are interested in impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton (Broncos), but he might be far more costly than some of their other targets and it is unclear if they can compete financially for him.

Footballguys view: Knighton has stated several times that he wants to stay in Denver. The Broncos would like to keep him around, but Knighton might be out of their price range.

Dolphins | Randy Starks awaits his fate    Sun Mar 1, 08:03 PM

Miami Dolphins DT Randy Starks is still awaiting word whether the team will keep him for 2015 or released him. He has a $6 million cap hit if he is on the team, and $1 million is he is jettisoned.

Footballguys view: Starks could be asked to take a pay cut, but that doesn't sound like it's an option right now. With only $1 million in dead money, the Dolphins might just choose to release Starks instead.

Redskins | Barry Cofield to be released    Fri Feb 27, 02:16 PM

Washington Redskins DT Barry Cofield said he has been told he will be released, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: Washington saves about $4.2 million with this move. Last season, groin and ankle injuries slowed him down but before that Cofield started every game in his Washington career.

Redskins | Ricky Jean-Francois signs    Thu Feb 26, 06:56 PM

Free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois (Colts) signed a three-year deal with the Washington Redskins Thursday, Feb. 26. The deal is worth $9 million with $4 million guaranteed and a total value of $11.25 million.

Footballguys view: The move makes a lot of sense for both sides. Washington general manager Scot McCloughan has ties to Jean-Francois. When he was GM of the 49ers, McCloughan selected Jean-Francois with a seventh-round pick in the 2009 NFL draft. Jean-Francois gets to sign early before the real hysteria of free agency begins.

Rams | Kendall Langford released    Thu Feb 26, 04:09 PM

St. Louis Rams DT Kendall Langford was released Thursday, Feb. 26, saving the team $6 million in salary cap space.

Footballguys view: The writing has been on the wall here since Langford lost his starting job in the fall to Aaron Donald. He should get plenty of interest on the open market now that he's been released.

  49ers | Ricky Jean-Francois to visit    Wed Feb 25, 12:07 PM

Free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois (Colts) is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The 49ers interest makes a ton of sense. Jean-Francois played under new head coach Jim Tomsula when he was with the team from 2009-2012. The 49ers need a backup plan in case Justin Smith decides to retire.

Redskins | Meeting with Ricky Jean-Francois    Wed Feb 25, 12:07 PM

Free-agent DT Ricky Jean-Francois (Colts) is scheduled to meet with the Washington Redskins this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Colts made the move to get rid of Jean-Francois in an effort to gain more salary cap space. He could still be an effective player for the right team. Washington could use Jean-Francois at left end because they're expected to lose Jarvis Jenkins in free agency.

Ravens | Trying to restructure Haloti Ngata's deal    Tue Feb 24, 09:20 PM

The Baltimore Ravens are trying to restructure the contract of DT Haloti Ngata, as he heads into the final year of a five-year, $61 million deal.

Footballguys view: We'll see if the two sides can get something done here. Ngata carries a team-high $16 million salary cap figure and $8.5 million base salary.

Ravens | Haloti Ngata receives offer    Tue Feb 24, 11:30 AM

Baltimore Ravens DT Haloti Ngata received a 'very good offer' from the Baltimore Ravens, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Ravens want to lessen Ngata's cap hit this year, so some form of extension would make sense. He's one of the best at his position, and his presence in the middle helps free up the playmakers behind him on defense. He's got a $16 million cap hit this year with $7.5 million in dead money.

Broncos | Several players not expected to return    Mon Feb 23, 06:15 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton, OG Orlando Franklin and FS Rahim Moore are not expected to return to the team next season.

Footballguys view: Knighton could move on to the Oakland Raiders where he'd be reunited with Jack Del Rio for a third time in his career. Franklin probably will get some looks at tackle again, and Moore might be a bit too pricey for the Broncos to keep around.

Lions | Positive meeting with Nick Fairley    Sun Feb 22, 08:00 PM

Updating a previous report, representation of Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley and the team met at the NFL Combine Sunday, Feb. 22, and the team expressed an interest in keeping Fairley. The meeting was characterized as being 'very positive.'

Footballguys view: The Lions did not pick up Fairley's fifth-year option, so he's set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins. They could bring him back to Detroit, depending on how much his new contract is--and on how much they spend on Ndamukong Suh.

Lions | Met with Nick Fairley    Sat Feb 21, 08:49 AM

Impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley's agent met with the Detroit Lions Friday, Feb. 20.

Footballguys view: In four years, Fairley has never played a full 16-game season. With only 13.5 sacks in his career, Fairley has a name and potential. The Lions are going to be cautious when considering a deal that would keep him in Detroit.

Broncos | Terrance Knighton wants to stay in Denver    Thu Feb 19, 12:00 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton has made it clear that he wants to stay in Denver even though he's scheduled to hit the open market in March. He said he'd even be willing to take 'somewhat of a hometown discount,' but Knighton doesn't feel that the interest in mutual on the Broncos' part at this point. Head coach Gary Kubiak said the Broncos hope to retain as many of their free agents as possible, including Knighton.

Footballguys view: It's hard to imagine the Broncos without "Pot Roast" in a Broncos jersey, but they have some potentially expensive free agents - the most noteworthy of which are Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas -- which might suck in a lot of the available cash if the Broncos wish to hold onto them. Losing Knighton would leave Denver with just Marvin Austin at nose tackle and that could be a significant downgrade.

Broncos | Terrance Knighton frustrated by Denver    Wed Feb 18, 10:04 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton said Wednesday, Feb. 18, that he is frustration with the lack of communication from the Broncos.

Footballguys view: Knighton is frustrated for good reason. He's stated multiple times that he wants to stay in Denver, but the Broncos have had zero communication with him. Knighton is likely to get a big deal in free agency, and we think the Raiders are most likely to pick him up.

Lions | Coach impressed with Nick Fairley    Tue Feb 17, 12:32 PM

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley received praise from defensive coordinator Teryl Austin, who was impressed with how Fairley handled a demotion coming out of training camp, and even more impressed with how Fairley dealt with working his way back from an injury during the regular season, and staying in shape during that time.

Footballguys view: That's awesome, but it doesn't mean Fairley is coming back to the Lions. In four years, Fairley has never played a full 16-game season. With only 13.5 sacks in his career, Fairley has a name and potential. That might be enough for someone to take a chance on him with a lucrative deal.

Broncos | Terrance Knighton won't come cheap    Mon Feb 16, 11:16 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton will likely receive offers that Denver will be 'hard-pressed' to match if Knighton reaches the open market next month, according to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post.

Footballguys view: We believe Knighton could follow former Broncos defensive coordinator (and current Raiders head coach) Jack Del Rio to Oakland. Knighton is in line to get a contract that pays him around $6-8 million annually.

Lions | Tag upcoming for Ndamukong Suh?    Mon Feb 16, 02:36 PM

Detroit Lions DT Ndamukong Suh could have a franchise tag or transition tag used on him between Monday, Feb. 16, and Monday, March 2. The Lions would need to pay Suh $26.7 million in order to tag him, potentially limiting their moves in free agency and the NFL Draft.

Raiders | Expected to show interest in Terrance Knighton    Sun Feb 15, 02:08 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton is expected to receive interest from the Oakland Raiders if he hits the free-agent market.

Footballguys view: Knighton worked well under Jack Del Rio (new Raiders head coach, former Broncos defensive coordinator) over the last two seasons. This comes as no surprise because Knighton was drafted by the Jaguars when Del Rio was the head coach in Jacksonville. Behind Ndamukong Suh, Knighton is arguably the best defensive tackle on the open market.

Broncos | No talks with Terrance Knighton     Sun Feb 15, 02:06 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton has not had any contract talks with the Broncos at this point.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have a need at the nose tackle position as they've switched to a 3-4 defense for this season under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Knighton has said he would take less money in order to remain with the Broncos.

Lions | Ndamukong Suh deal voided for 2015    Sat Feb 7, 03:22 AM

Detroit Lions DL Ndamukong Suh had his 2015 contract year voided. Absent a franchise or transition tag, Suh becomes a free agent when the 2015 league year starts on Tuesday, March 10.

Footballguys view: Suh is set to be one of the highest paid free agents in this entire class. He had a cap number of $22.4 million last year, and there's not going to be any sort of home-town discount. Suh is looking to become the NFL's highest-paid defender, topping J.J. Watt's six-year, $100 million extension that included $51.8 million in guarantees. Let the bidding war ensue!

Updating previous reports, free-agent DT Terrence Cody (Ravens) faces 15 counts, including two felony charges, stemming from abuse or neglect of an animal, marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia and illegal possession of an alligator. He turned himself in after a warrant was issued and was released on $10,000 bail Monday, Feb. 2.

Footballguys view: Cody was released by the Ravens, and with these charges we can't imagine teams lining up to add him on the open market.

Ravens | Terrence Cody officially released    Mon Feb 2, 02:08 PM

Baltimore Ravens DT Terrence Cody has been released Monday, Feb. 2. Cody is being investigate for animal cruelty.

Footballguys view: Today is the first day that players can be released, and the Ravens wasted no time washing their hands of Cody. He was the 57th overall pick in the 2010 NFL draft, but Cody has never played up to his potential. He's now free to sign with any team, but we can't imagine the market will be even lukewarm for a big bodied defensive tackle who has been a career underachiever.
