Bengals | Reggie Nelson could return    Thu Feb 11, 08:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent FS Reggie Nelson is expected to be one of the players the team tries to re-sign this offseason.

Footballguys view: Nelson can make plays against the run, and he's not afraid to mix it up close to the line of scrimmage. We feel confident the Bengals will keep him around in 2016 and beyond.

Bengals | Andy Dalton not throwing yet    Wed Feb 10, 05:40 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) said he is able to throw, but will hold off on doing so for a little bit longer. 'Not throwing yet because we are being very conservative with it,' Dalton said. 'I feel like I can throw but no reason to push anything right now. I have plenty of time now to get 100%.'

Footballguys view: There's no need to rush Dalton back. He should be ready to go by the time the offseason programs begin after the draft.

Bengals | Storm Johnson worked out in CIN    Wed Feb 10, 08:50 AM

Free-agent RB Storm Johnson (Jaguars) worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals last week.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a decent all-purpose back, and there may be a team willing to add him as a camp body.

The Cincinnati Bengals signed free-agents OT Darryl Baldwin and CB Chykie Brown Monday, Feb. 8.

Bengals | Darqueze Dennard should be ready    Thu Feb 4, 07:26 PM

Cincinnati Bengals CB Darqueze Dennard (shoulder) should be ready for the start of training camp this offseason.

Footballguys view: Dennard is recovering from a torn labrum he suffered in late November. The second-year corner played a part-time role on defense, but he was a big contributor on special teams. Expect the team to limit him this offseason, and perhaps ease him back in at the start of camp.

Bengals | Marvin Jones excited for free agency    Wed Feb 3, 07:13 PM

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent WR Marvin Jones is excited to test the free-agent market this offseason. 'I love Cincinnati, but at the same time I am a free agent,' Jones said. 'It wouldn't be good for me not to test the waters a little bit. It's just an exciting process.'

Footballguys view: At this time, at least two teams (Detroit and New England) are rumored to be interested in Jones. According to this report, Jones does not want to give the Bengals a hometown discount as he prefers to approach free agency from all angles and hope an irresistible offer arises.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert has sprain    Tue Feb 2, 05:14 PM

Updating previous reports, Cincinnati Benglas TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) suffered an ankle sprain in the 2016 Pro Bowl. He simply needs rest and will be fine for all offseason activities.

Footballguys view: Phew! Good news for the Bengals here. The Pro Bowl is not a game where you want to see your guys get hurt. It sounds like a scare and nothing more.

Bengals | Bronson Hill signs with Bengals    Tue Feb 2, 11:30 AM

Free-agent RB Bronson Hill (Saints) signed a reserve/future contract with the Cincinnati Bengals Tuesday, Feb. 2.

Footballguys view: A former Eastern Michigan standout, Hill played all four games with the Bills in the preseason after entering the league in 2015 as an undrafted free agent. During the regular season, he spent time on the Bears, Dolphins, and Saints practice squad.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert to have more tests    Tue Feb 2, 12:52 AM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (foot) did not suffer a break in his foot at the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 31, but he is in a walking boot and plans to underdog furthet tests in Cincinnati to confirm he only has a bone bruise.

Footballguys view: The Pro Bowl is largely folly, and players certainly don't want to end up hurt in an exhibition game. Eifert is likely to meet with a foot specialist when he returns to Cincinnati early this week.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert exits Pro Bowl    Mon Feb 1, 09:33 AM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (foot) left the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 31, and was in a walking boot due to a foot injury. He had X-rays, which revealed a bone bruise.

Footballguys view: No need to get anyone hurt in a meaningless exhibition game. A bone bruise would be problematic if the Bengals were still playing. They've got plenty of time to get Eifert right before OTAs and minicamp.

Bengals | Free agency for three Bengals receivers     Tue Jan 26, 07:33 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WRs Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Brandon Tate are impending unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Bengals (like all teams) will have a little bit of time to sign their own free agents before the start of the new league year. While Tate may be gone, they could keep him around to keep contributing on special teams. Sanu is a fine possession receiver, but he may be looking for a larger role. Jones is the guy to keep around above the others, but his price tag is unknown at this time.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill struggled after contact    Mon Jan 25, 06:41 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill averaged only 1.46 yards after contact this season, which ranked him behind 42 other running backs in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Hill had only one more carry than he did as a rookie in 2014, but he had over 300 fewer yards rushing this season. He finished 2015 as the 14th-best fantasy running back in standard scoring, but Hill was inconsistent and he failed to play up to his potential. We'll see if he can get back on track in 2016, but we won't see him taken in the first round like we did in 2015.

Bengals | Three coaches hired    Mon Jan 18, 06:27 PM

Former Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Bill Lazor has been hired by the Cincinnati Bengals as their new quarterbacks coach. The Bengals have also hired former Dolphins defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle as defensive backs coach and former Washington Redskins assistant coach Jacob Burney as their defensive line coach.

Footballguys view: Coyle was a strong defensive backs coach for the team from 2003-2011 and Lazor was a sought after offensive mind just one year ago. These are smart moves by a franchise that has turned into a head coach factory lately.

Bengals | Greg Jackson a candidate to join staff    Fri Jan 15, 05:25 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals are pursuing University of Michigan secondary coach Greg Jackson to replace Vance Joseph, who accepted the defensive coordinator job with the Miami Dolphins after serving as the defensive backs coach in Cincinnati for the past two seasons.

Bengals | Ken Zampese promoted by Bengals    Fri Jan 15, 01:04 PM

Cincinnati Bengals quarterbacks coach Ken Zampese was promoted to offensive coordinator Friday, Jan. 15.

Footballguys view: This is what the Bengals do; promote from within. Zampese is taking over for former OC Hue Jackson as he moved on to be the head coach with the Browns. Jackson took over for Jay Gruden when he left to be the head coach in Washington. Promoting Zampese gives continuity to the Bengals offense.

Bengals | Vontaze Burfict suspended three games    Mon Jan 11, 07:51 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict has been suspended for the first three games of the 2016 regular season for repeated violations of the player safety rules.

Footballguys view: According to Burfict's agent, the suspension will be appealed. With such an emphasis on player safety, targeting a player in the way that Burfict did Steelers WR Antonio Brown is totally unacceptable. This sentence may be reduced (one game?), but we don't think it's completely eliminated.

Bengals | Andy Dalton to have normal offseason    Mon Jan 11, 06:10 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) will have a normal offseason despite his thumb injury, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Footballguys view: Dalton could have played this week if the Bengals would have gotten past the Steelers on Saturday. He'll be ready to go for OTAs and minicamp later this year.

Bengals | Marvin Lewis staying in Cincinnati     Sun Jan 10, 02:59 PM

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis will not be fired as the Bengals have no plans to make any head coach change at this time, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Bengals don't change that much, and they seem content with Lewis as their head coach. Even with another playoff loss for a Lewis-led Bengals team, he's going to be their head coach going forward. The Bengals haven't won a playoff game since 1990, the longest streak in the NFL.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard out for game    Sat Jan 9, 11:01 PM

Updating a previous story, Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard (concussion) is in concussion protocol and has been ruled out for the remainder of the AFC wild-card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: The big hit on Bernard actually sparked the Bengals. After that play, the Bengals defense had more life and the team was able to get the lead before ultimately losing to the Steelers.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard helped off    Sat Jan 9, 10:47 PM

Bengals | Andy Dalton ready next week?    Sat Jan 9, 03:21 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton is not a guarantee to play next week if the Bengals win. Dalton has not thrown yet, and the Bengals won't know if he'll practice until Tuesday, Jan. 12, or Wednesday, Jan 13.

Footballguys view: The Bengals have to get past the Steelers on Saturday first. Dalton is very close to coming back to the field, and it would be a boost for the team if he can get back as they advance in the postseason.

Bengals | AJ McCarron likes the deep ball    Sat Jan 9, 12:46 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron has thrown three touchdowns on passes of 16 yards or more down the field, and his QBR on deep throws would rank third in the NFL if he had enough attempts to qualify.

Bengals | A.J. Green has dominated Pittsburgh    Fri Jan 8, 10:35 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green faces the Pittsburgh Steelers in the wild-card round of the playoffs Saturday, Jan. 9, and he combined for 17 catches for 250 yards and two touchdowns in two meetings with the Steelers during the regular season.

Footballguys view: Green is the best asset on the Bengals offense, and QB A.J. McCarron has to feed him early and often. McCarron is not afraid to make bold throws, and he may have to play catch-up football against a high-powered Steelers offense.

Bengals | Andy Dalton ruled out    Fri Jan 8, 11:55 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) has been ruled out for the wild-card game Saturday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: We're going to see A.J. McCarron get to start for the Bengals in their Wild Card matchup at home against the Steelers on Saturday. McCarron is a bold thrower, and he doesn't hesitate to make difficult throws. However, he's rattled by pressure and he's facing a Steelers defense that was among the best in the league when getting after the quarterback.

Bengals | Andy Dalton not at practice    Thu Jan 7, 05:46 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) missed practice for the second straight day Thursday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: If the Bengals hope to advance, it'll be with A.J. McCarron at the helm. McCarron isn't an exciting option, and he's only surpassed 200 yards passing once since he took over. He might be a cheaper option in daily games with a little upside though.

Bengals | Wednesday practice report for Week 18    Wed Jan 6, 06:40 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Ryan Hewitt (knee) did not practice Wednesday, Jan. 6. CB Leon Hall (concussion, back) practiced in full.

Footballguys view: Playing without Hewitt--who is more of a fullback--is a blow to the Bengals offense. Hewitt isn't going to run or catch the ball that much, but his blocking is critical for blasting open holes for guys like Jeremy Hill or Gio Bernard.

Bengals | Andy Dalton makes brief appearance    Tue Jan 5, 11:50 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) was able to throw two passes in practice Tuesday, Jan. 5, but head coach Marvin Lewis said QB A.J. McCarron remains the team's starting quarterback heading into the AFC Wild-Card Game Saturday, Jan. 9, against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Dalton is about one week away from being able to play, but the team will have to get past the Steelers first.

Bengals | Cincy planning to use AJ McCarron    Tue Jan 5, 12:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis said Monday, Jan. 4, that the Bengals would prepare during the week as if QB AJ McCarron would start the wild card game against the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, Jan. 9, with QB Andy Dalton's (thumb) status up in the air. McCarron said he'll be more confident this weekend if he's forced to face the Steelers for the second time.

Footballguys view: Confidence isn't McCarron's problem, but staying cool under pressure is. McCarron will take chances with the football, and that can pay off for the Bengals since they have elite weapons like WR A.J. Green and TE Tyler Eifert. However, in a game that has 'shootout' written all over it, we'll take Ben Roethlisberger over what McCarron can bring to the table.

Bengals | Andy Dalton sheds cast    Tue Jan 5, 10:37 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) had the cast removed from his right thumb, but his status for the wild card game Saturday, Jan. 9, is unknown.

Footballguys view: Earlier reports indicate that Dalton is not going to be ready for the game on Wild Card Weekend. He could play the week after that, presuming the Bengals make it that far.

Bengals | Andy Dalton not expected to play    Mon Jan 4, 05:26 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (finger) is not expected to play against the Pittsburgh Steelers this weekend, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Footballguys view: That's bad news for the Bengals. With A.J. McCarron in at quarterback, the Steelers defense should be able to take advantage. Dalton might be able to play in the Divisional Round if the Bengals advance.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert scores in return    Sun Jan 3, 07:44 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (concussion) returned from a two-game absence and caught four passes for 51 yards and a touchdown in a 24-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Eifert is a red zone monster no matter who is at quarterback for the Bengals. He'll be very important in the first round game against Pittsburgh.

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill had 16 carries for 96 yards and a touchdown and two catches for 19 yards in a 24-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Hill will likely be a cornerstone of the Bengals gameplan to shorten the contest and increase their chances of beating the Steelers next week.

Bengals | Andy Dalton to see specialist     Sat Jan 2, 12:21 AM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) will see a hand specialist Monday, Jan. 4, and he is hoping to have the cast around his right thumb removed.

Footballguys view: The Bengals need some unlikely events to land a first-round bye and avoid an AJ McCarron start in a playoff game. McCarron has been better than expected, so all is not lost for Cincinnati.
