Bengals | Big year for Jeremy Hill?    Mon Jul 25, 05:59 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill is expected to have a 'huge year,' according to Paul Dehner Jr. of The Cincinnati Enquirer.

Footballguys view: Huge is a relative term. Could he put up career-best numbers? Sure...but we're not counting on it. Hill suffered through a sophomore slump in 2015, and he finished the year with 330 fewer rushing yards than he did as a rookie in 2014. He had zero 100-yard games, and now he's supposed to be 'huge' in 2016? That's not logical, especially when you consider all the offensive changes on the Bengals. Hill's going to split touches with Gio Bernard, and we see him more as a RB3 or flex play.

Bengals | Cincinnati could re-sign Taylor Mays    Mon Jul 25, 04:41 PM

Free-agent FS Taylor Mays (Bengals) could still be re-signed by the Cincinnati Bengals despite having to serve an eight-game suspension.

Footballguys view: Mays is bounced for two months by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy. Perhaps when he's cleared to play, the Bengals will have interest in bringing him back.

Bengals | Vincent Rey trimming down    Sun Jul 24, 08:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vincent Rey has dropped almost 20 pounds this offseason using a food journal and sticking to 'The Caveman Diet,' consisting of meat, vegetables and fruit.

Footballguys view: Rey has been the leading tackler for the Bengals in each of the last two years. Trimming down should help him cover the field better, but we don't think he'll shy away from doing most of the dirty work for this defense in 2016.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert's rehab on schedule    Sun Jul 24, 03:17 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) is reportedly progressing as planned following right ankle surgery on May 27, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: As planned could easily include missing or being limited for the first two or three games of the season. Eifert's fantasy outlook isn't that different than 3rd-4th pick Jordan Reed - when healthy - but Eifert's recovery timeline has always put being 100% on Week 1 on the edge of the range of possibilities.

Bengals | Cedric Ogbuehi should be ready    Sat Jul 23, 08:39 AM

Cincinnati Bengals OT Cedric Ogbuehi (undisclosed) missed some time this offseason because of an undisclosed injury but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Bengals | A.J. Green feeling loose    Tue Jul 19, 02:56 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green said his mind is at ease entering the 2016 season. 'I don't have to worry about contracts or anything like that,' Green said. 'I just go in there free, [with a] clear head, just go out there, work and have fun.'

Footballguys view: The Bengals need Green to feel his feet in the back of the end zone. The Bengals passing game is going to be missing the likes of free-agent departures in Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons). The team will even be without TE Tyler Eifert for the first part of the year as he recovers from ankle surgery. Green is going to be the centerpiece of the passing game more than ever before.

Bengals | Mike Nugent to have competition    Sun Jul 17, 05:33 PM

Cincinnati Bengals PK Mike Nugent will compete with PK Zach Hocker for the kicker job during training camp, but Hooker likely will need a perfect camp to win the starting job.

Bengals | Dwight Freeney could be option for CIN    Sun Jul 17, 05:25 PM

Free-agent DE/LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) could still receive interest from the Cincinnati Bengals leading up to training camp.

Footballguys view: Freeney has a few spots where he can fit in, and he's already had workouts with the Bengals and the Falcons. We could see the Cardinals bringing him back, and a team like the Buccaneers might want him as a sub-package player. The market isn't white-hot for his services, but Freeney does have enough interest to find a new home--perhaps sometime before training camp. Last year, Freeney was able to snare eight sacks (his most since 2011) while only playing 245 snaps in just 11 games.

Bengals | Cincinnati signs Rashaun Simonise    Thu Jul 14, 11:57 PM

Free-agent WR Rashaun Simonise signed with the Cincinnati Bengals Thursday, July 14.

Footballguys view: There's room for someone to step up with Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones out of the building, but we're betting it's rookie Tyler Sharpe, not Simonise. The University of Calgary standout has a good size/speed combination, and he's got the body control to make difficult catches near the sideline. The rookie is only worth monitoring in the deepest of deep dynasty leagues.

Bengals | Cincinnati counting on Margus Hunt    Sun Jul 10, 07:18 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DE Margus Hunt is being counted on to be part of the defensive line rotation this season, according to director of player personnel Duke Tobin, and Tobin said Hunt has developed a good relationship with defensive line coach Jacob Burney.

Footballguys view: This is a make-or-break year for Hunt. A second-round pick in 2013 out of SMU, Hunt has failed to develop as a pass-rusher and has only 1.5 sacks in three pro seasons. In a contract year, Hunt will compete with Will Clarke to be the Bengals No.3 defensive end after Wallace Gilberry (Lions) moved on.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert set to miss games?    Sun Jul 10, 07:12 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) is expected to miss the early part of the season, according to director of player personnel Duke Tobin.

Footballguys view: After his ankle surgery, there was plenty of speculation that Eifert might miss the first couple of regular season games. Tobin's comments cement what some had already thought was the most-possible outcome. We'll know more about Eifert's status as we go through training camp, but fantasy owners should have another option ready. He's missed 19 games in three seasons, and now it looks like he'll miss some more. Eifert's current ADP is TE4 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues--and that may fall after this news.

Bengals | Depth at receiver for Bengals    Sun Jul 10, 02:37 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WRs Mario Alford, Jake Kumerow and Brandon Tate were named by director of player personnel Duke Tobin as receivers who can contribute behind WRs A.J. Green, Brandon LaFell and Tyler Boyd.

Footballguys view: Let's not get too crazy here. Tate is a speedy returner, but that's about it as he's not impressive as a receiver. Alford is a smaller (5'8" 180 pounds) receiver/returner who the Bengals picked up out of West Virginia in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL draft. Kumerow was a training camp stud last year as an undrafted rookie out of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The 6'5" 205 pound WR made a good impression and spent his rookie season learning on the Bengals practice squad. In deep dynasty, he's a player we like and the best one worth watching here for fantasy owners.

Bengals | Cincy hasn't talked with Anquan Boldin    Sun Jul 10, 02:30 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) has not been contacted by the Cincinnati Bengals, according to director of player personnel Duke Tobin.

Footballguys view: Boldin may not be the player he used to be, but we imagine the veteran should be able to latch on with some team during training camp. The Bengals lost Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) and Marvin Jones (Lions) in free agency, so having interest in any WR before/during/after camp would make sense. At this time, it doesn't sound like Boldin is on their radar.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd pegged for slot duty    Thu Jul 7, 09:13 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd is going to be the starting slot receiver 'no matter what,' according to beat writer Geoff Hobson.

Footballguys view: Which is what was expected. If Brandon LaFell stumbles, Boyd could see more reps and production, but for now we see him as no more than a WR6.

Bengals | CIN excited about Tyler Boyd    Sat Jul 2, 07:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals rookie WR Tyler Boyd should expect his share of catches this season as long as he progresses through training camp the same way he steadily improved during workouts this spring, according to his receivers coach James Urban.

Footballguys view: It seems like we get a positive Boyd story at least once a week this offseason...for good reason. The rookie from PITT is a smooth athlete with the body control to make difficult catches seem routine. As a slot receiver, Boyd could show off that athleticism, his fearlessness and run-after-the-catch ability. He was targeted 128 times in 2015, snared 91 passes for 926 yards and had 394 yards after the catch. Over 56 percent of his receptions in 2015 went for a TD or a first down. Boyd is the best receiver the Bengals have not named A.J. Green. We love his dynasty value, but in re-draft leagues he's only a WR6 or WR7 right now.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard in more two-back sets    Thu Jun 30, 10:19 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard could be used in more two-back sets with RB Jeremy Hill to make up for the loss of TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) early in the season.

Footballguys view: The more both of them are on the field together, the better, at least as far as the overall offense is concerned. The downside is that it might be hard to figure out how the carries will split out, at least early in the season. Right now we have them both as RB3, and both are tracking an ADP of between RB20-25.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd expected to help offense    Wed Jun 29, 06:04 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd performed well during offseason workouts and will help in the passing game, but wide receivers coach James Urban wants to see how Boyd does during training camp before making him the No. 2 or No. 3 receiver.

Footballguys view: The Bengals need some help at the WR position after losing both Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) and Marvin Jones (Lions) in free agency. Boyd was the team's second-round pick this year out of PITT. During his college career, Boyd was a sure-handed receiver who was used to a large workload. Over each of the last three years, Boyd had been targeted 124 times or more. We'll see if he can earn the starting job opposite A.J. Green at some point this year.

Bengals | Donte Whitner being recruited to CIN    Wed Jun 22, 01:11 PM

Free-agent SS Donte Whitner (Browns) is being recruited by Cincinnati Bengals LB Karlos Dansby to sign with the Bengals.

Footballguys view: Whitner was not brought back by the Browns, but he might stay in the division. The Bengals have an opening at safety that may come down to a battle between the inexperienced Shawn Williams, who did start four games last year and 2015 sixth round pick Derron Smith.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell feeling comfortable    Wed Jun 22, 01:10 AM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell is feeling confident with QB Andy Dalton, and two continue to build rapport. 'I've been working with (Dalton) for a little over two months now so we've got the timing down and it's been showing in practice every day,' LaFell said Tuesday, June 21.

Footballguys view: LaFell could open the season as key target in the Bengals pass offense if Tyler Eifert isn't ready for Week 1 after offseason ankle surgery. He was a non-factor last year after a leg injury landed him on the PUP to begin the season, but LaFell was a strong producer in 2014 for New England. He might not be worth a draft pick, but keep LaFell on your early season waiver wire speed dial with all of the opportunity in the Bengals passing game.

Bengals | Brandon Thompson's status uncertain    Mon Jun 20, 01:44 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DT Brandon Thompson (knee) hopes to be ready for the start of the regular season, but he could be a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform list if the team continues to be cautious with his recovery.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell picking up offense    Thu Jun 16, 10:01 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell has picked up the offense quickly, QB Andy Dalton said, and LaFell said he is ready to take advantage if defenses double team WR A.J. Green.

Footballguys view: We're not buying the LaFell hype. He's a player who has dropped way too many passes dating all the way back to his college career at LSU. LaFell is not consistent, and we're not sure he's going to be the answer opposite Green. Watch to see if rookie Tyler Boyd emerges in the Bengals passing game.

Bengals | Two tackles likely ready for camp    Thu Jun 16, 06:56 PM

Bengals | Andy Dalton receives praise    Thu Jun 16, 06:50 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton has been better than advertised so far this offseason, according to WR Brandon LaFell. LaFell noted Dalton's ball placement, accuracy, quick release and command of the huddle as factors that have especially impressed.

Footballguys view: Dalton was having a great season in 2015 before he got hurt, as if everything clicked. We don't know what Hue Jackson's absence might mean for him but we like what we're hearing from LaFell here. Dalton should be a solid QB2 with upside this year in Cincinnati.

Bengals | James Wright to be ready for camp?    Thu Jun 16, 06:41 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR James Wright (knee) participated in individual drills for the first time Wednesday, June 15, after undergoing micro fracture knee surgery this offseason. Wright said he felt explosive and he thinks he'll be ready for training camp, but it's not certain at this point.

Footballguys view: We still think he's a long shot to make the team, forget making an impact but we're still pulling for him.

Cincinnati Bengals WR James Wright (knee) participated in individual drills during practice Wednesday, June 15. He has missed nearly two seasons because of microfracture surgery and is not sure if he will be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: It's hard to imagine Wright having much of an impact but we wish him well. It would be a great story if he could stick and have a good season. With AJ Green and seasoned vets like Brandon LaFell and Brandon Tate, Wright has a lot of competition for snaps and we aren't putting him on our rosters.

Bengals | William Jackson signs deal    Fri Jun 10, 05:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals CB William Jackson III, the team's first-round pick, signed a four-year deal worth $9.705 million Friday, June 10. The deal includes a $5.258 signing bonus as well as a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Jackson was one of our favorite CBs in this draft class. According to NFL.com, Jackson only allowed 40 percent of passes thrown his way to be completed over last two years. He's got the speed to get into the back pocket of a receiver, and he provides great downfield coverage. Jackson has a nose for the ball, and he can make plays at the point of the catch. Once the interception is secured, Jackson has the athleticism to be a threat to score from anywhere on the field. He's going to compete as a sub-package CB this year for the Bengals, but he's got the future upside to be an impact starter in the NFL.

Bengals | Giovani Bernard extended    Wed Jun 8, 03:28 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Giovani Bernard is finalizing a three-year extension worth $15.5 million Wednesday, June 8, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bernard was entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2016, and the Bengals wanted to keep him around for a good price. We should see him involved as part of the team's RBBC with Jeremy Hill, but Bernard really stands out as a receiver out of the backfield. With losses to the receiving corps in free agency (Marvin Jones, Mohamed Sanu), Bernard may be able to outproduce the 49 catches he had in 2015.

'Along with the team goals, you've got to have your personal goals that will help you obtain the team goal,' Dunlap said. 'My personal goals are to get that sack title at the end of the season, one, and then two, to get Strahan's record.'

Bengals | A.J. Green helping Tyler Boyd    Sun May 29, 11:11 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said watching WR A.J. Green demonstrate techniques makes them easier to learn than just having someone tell him how to do them.

Footballguys view: The second-round pick from PITT is the likely starter opposite Green this year after the team lost Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) in free agency. Boyd reminds some in the scouting community of Keenan Allen (Chargers) because of his competitive nature when the ball is in the air and his body control to make difficult catches seem routine.

  Bengals | Tyler Eifert's injury didn't improve     Sun May 29, 09:19 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert's (ankle) ankle injury didn't improve as expected following the initial evaluation, and surgery became the only option.

Footballguys view: Eifert injured his ankle in the worthless tradition known as the Pro Bowl. The injury did not get better, and there was a tipping point when surgery was the only option. There's a chance that Eifert will be ready for the start of the regular season, but other reports indicate he could miss a few games to start the year.

Bengals | A.J. Green ready to carry offense    Fri May 27, 11:35 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green said he knows that the offense is only going to go as far as he and QB Andy Dalton can take it in 2016.

Footballguys view: Good thing he's ready, because that's what the Bengals are going to need him to do. Not only did they lose Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) in free agency, but star TE Tyler Eifert may miss some games to start the season due to ankle surgery.

Bengals | Ryan Hewitt hurting    Wed May 25, 03:06 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Ryan Hewitt (undisclosed) recently underwent a minor, non-football procedure. He is recovering nicely and will return soon.

Footballguys view: The Bengals already have Tyler Eifert banged up, but Hewitt is really more of an H-back or fullback than he is a tight end. This sounds like he'll be back in the near future.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert could miss multiple games    Wed May 25, 09:39 AM

Updating previous reports, Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) will undergo surgery on his ankle Wednesday, May 25, and he could miss the first couple of games of the regular season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The timetable for Eifert is unknown at this time. The Bengals offense would sorely miss the star TE even if he only misses a game or two. The team is going to have a new-look passing game with different targets for QB Andy Dalton. If Eifert is out, then we'll see Tyler Kroft in a larger role.

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) scored on 18.6% of his 70 targets (13 touchdowns). No one with at least 20 targets had a higher percentage of targets result in touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Eifert's availability for the start of the regular season is unknown at this time due to his ankle surgery. Why does anyone play in the Pro Bowl? The NFL should just have players grab a controller and play Madden Ultimate Team to a live audience instead.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert may miss Week 1    Tue May 24, 02:20 PM

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert (ankle) may not be ready for the start of the regular season, according to a source. Eifert will have surgery on his injured ankle in the near future. His expected recovery time is three months.

Footballguys view: Eifert suffered this injury during the Pro Bowl, but the team just decided to put him under the knife now. The Bengals are already short on targets with WRs Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) and Marvin Jones (Lions) moving on in free agency. When healthy, Eifert is a star TE and top-5 fantasy prospect at his position. Keep an eye on this situation as camp approaches. We think Eifert may skip the preseason in order to try and be ready for the start of the regular season.

Bengals | Dwight Freeney to visit Bengals    Tue May 24, 11:23 AM

Free-agent LB/DE Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) will visit the Cincinnati Bengals this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This would be an interesting (and potentially really good) fit for Freeney. The veteran pass-rusher is best suited to be a situational player at this point in his career. If he signed with the Bengals, Freeney would be a rotational player behind rushers Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap. Freeney wants to sign with a contender, and the Bengals are certainly built like a team that can make a deep postseason run.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill hoping to up efficiency     Sun May 22, 12:18 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill's yards per carry dropped from 5.1 as a rookie to 3.6 last season, and he was missing running lanes that he hit quickly in his rookie year.

Footballguys view: Hill was slow with his decision making last year, and that led to his YPC downturn. This year, if he runs with better intent and determination then he should be swifter and build more power. Last year, the smaller back Gio Bernard had a better yards-after-contact-per rush average (1.9) than Hill (1.46).

Bengals | Tyler Boyd likely to open season in slot    Sat May 21, 04:06 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd will get chance to earn immediate playing time, according to new offensive coordinator Ken Zampese.

Footballguys view: The Bengals have A.J. Green and (for now) Brandon LaFell on the outside at WR. LaFell will likely end up disappointing them (like he does at every stop), so Boyd's role may grow from a WR3 to a WR2 for the team. For fantasy purposes, think of the rookie as a WR6 with upside.

Bengals | Andy Dalton to boost Tyler Boyd's game?    Thu May 19, 10:16 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said he believes playing with QB Andy Dalton will help him elevate his performance. 'With him throwing me to open space, making me catch it away from defenders, making it a lot easier for me I feel like it'll just take my game to a whole other level than what I think it's already at,' Boyd said. 'It'll completely change me.'

Footballguys view: Dalton is solid on the shorter throws to slot receivers, which is where Boyd will be. Boyd has a lot of work to do to get up to speed, but with Dalton throwing and AJ Green occupying defenses, the rookie could develop into a decent WR4 or better this season.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd learning slot position    Thu May 19, 09:20 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said he knows the team views him as a slot receiver, and wide receivers coach James Urban believes Boyd has the instincts to learn the slot position quickly.

Footballguys view: The Bengals need some more reciever help with Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu both leaving. With attention focused on AJ Green, Boyd could be very productive if he gets up to speed quickly.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill motivated    Tue May 17, 07:49 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill is using his costly playoff fumble from last season to motivate himself this offseason. 'If anything [the fumble] motivated me as a player and will continue to help me the rest of my career,' Hill said. Hill added that he's embracing his mistake and waiting for his opportunity to overcome it.

Footballguys view: Hill had a disappointing sophomore season, but he still finished the year as RB14 in standard-scoring leagues. He should once again be at least a top-15 fantasy RB. Hill is easily a RB2 with low-end RB1 upside in certain matchups, and his current ADP is RB23 (5.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd signs deal    Mon May 16, 07:06 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd, the team's second-round draft pick, signed a four-year deal with the team Monday, May 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Boyd might be the best WR they have behind A.J. Green with both Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) moving on in free agency. The rookie from PITT has smooth athleticism and can get open with ease. He has the body control to make difficult catches seem easy, and he's known as a competitive player with strong 'my ball' mentality.
