Free-agent LB/DE Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) will visit the Cincinnati Bengals this week, according to a source.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill hoping to up efficiency     Sun May 22, 12:18 AM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill's yards per carry dropped from 5.1 as a rookie to 3.6 last season, and he was missing running lanes that he hit quickly in his rookie year.

Footballguys view: Hill was slow with his decision making last year, and that led to his YPC downturn. This year, if he runs with better intent and determination then he should be swifter and build more power. Last year, the smaller back Gio Bernard had a better yards-after-contact-per rush average (1.9) than Hill (1.46).

Bengals | Tyler Boyd likely to open season in slot    Sat May 21, 04:06 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd will get chance to earn immediate playing time, according to new offensive coordinator Ken Zampese.

Footballguys view: The Bengals have A.J. Green and (for now) Brandon LaFell on the outside at WR. LaFell will likely end up disappointing them (like he does at every stop), so Boyd's role may grow from a WR3 to a WR2 for the team. For fantasy purposes, think of the rookie as a WR6 with upside.

Bengals | Andy Dalton to boost Tyler Boyd's game?    Thu May 19, 10:16 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said he believes playing with QB Andy Dalton will help him elevate his performance. 'With him throwing me to open space, making me catch it away from defenders, making it a lot easier for me I feel like it'll just take my game to a whole other level than what I think it's already at,' Boyd said. 'It'll completely change me.'

Footballguys view: Dalton is solid on the shorter throws to slot receivers, which is where Boyd will be. Boyd has a lot of work to do to get up to speed, but with Dalton throwing and AJ Green occupying defenses, the rookie could develop into a decent WR4 or better this season.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd learning slot position    Thu May 19, 09:20 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said he knows the team views him as a slot receiver, and wide receivers coach James Urban believes Boyd has the instincts to learn the slot position quickly.

Footballguys view: The Bengals need some more reciever help with Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu both leaving. With attention focused on AJ Green, Boyd could be very productive if he gets up to speed quickly.

Bengals | Jeremy Hill motivated    Tue May 17, 07:49 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Jeremy Hill is using his costly playoff fumble from last season to motivate himself this offseason. 'If anything [the fumble] motivated me as a player and will continue to help me the rest of my career,' Hill said. Hill added that he's embracing his mistake and waiting for his opportunity to overcome it.

Footballguys view: Hill had a disappointing sophomore season, but he still finished the year as RB14 in standard-scoring leagues. He should once again be at least a top-15 fantasy RB. Hill is easily a RB2 with low-end RB1 upside in certain matchups, and his current ADP is RB23 (5.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bengals | Shawn Williams inks extension    Tue May 17, 09:55 AM

Cincinnati Bengals SS Shawn Williams signed a four-year extension Tuesday, May 17, through the 2020 season. Terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams' four-year extension is worth $19.5 million with $2 million in incentives. He's been a special teams standout for the Bengals, but now he's expected to start in Reggie Nelson's (Raiders) old spot.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd signs deal    Mon May 16, 07:06 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd, the team's second-round draft pick, signed a four-year deal with the team Monday, May 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Boyd might be the best WR they have behind A.J. Green with both Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) moving on in free agency. The rookie from PITT has smooth athleticism and can get open with ease. He has the body control to make difficult catches seem easy, and he's known as a competitive player with strong 'my ball' mentality.

Bengals | Waive Matt Johnson    Mon May 16, 05:56 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Matt Johnson was waived Monday, May 16.

Bengals | Cincinnati to try out Joe Licata    Sun May 15, 03:33 AM

Free-agent QB Joe Licata will work out with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday, May 16.

Footballguys view: Licata played his college ball for the University of Buffalo, and he is coming off a down 2015 season. He threw for 2,969 yards, 16 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2015 with a 62.4 completion percentage. Previous to that, Licata had many more TDs than INTs and teams are going to love his rocket arm. He's a camp arm, but Licata may be able to stick somewhere in the league.

Bengals | Sign Aaron Epps    Wed May 11, 06:17 PM

Undrafted free-agent OT Aaron Epps (Louisville) signed with the Cincinnati Bengals Wednesday, May 11.

Bengals | Dominique Easley working out    Mon May 9, 01:38 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent DT Dominique Easley (Patriots) is working out for the Cincinnati Bengals Monday, May 9, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Easley can be a productive player if healthy. There were some rumblings about him being an issue in the locker room with the Patriots, but the Bengals are a team who normally overlooks personality issues. The Falcons also have interest in the talented D-tackle.

Bengals | Tyler Boyd working to learn plays    Sun May 8, 11:59 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Tyler Boyd said he is working to memorize the playbook as quickly as possible, and he said he already knows most of the terminology because of the similarities with his college offense.

Footballguys view: Losing Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohammed Sanu (Falcons) in free agency led the Bengals to find Boyd in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. Boyd knows how to fight for the ball, and he's got the body control to make difficult catches seem routine. He'll immediately compete for the starting job opposite A.J. Green in 2016. We'll see if Boyd can impress and win that spot during training camp.

Bengals | Cody Core signs    Sat May 7, 03:38 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Cody Core signed his four-year rookie contract Saturday, May 7.

Footballguys view: Core is a big target (6'3") with the ability to box out smaller defenders for the ball. He can make the roster as a reserve WR and special teams player. His hands and concentration will need to improve if he's going to be able to move up the depth chart.

Bengals | Dominique Easley works out    Sat May 7, 09:17 AM

Free-agent DT Dominique Easley (Patriots) recently worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals, according to a source. Easley has also worked out for other teams.

Footballguys view: Easley is still only 24 years old, and if he's healthy there's no question that he can be a force on the defensive line. The Falcons have shown interest in Easley as well, and there's no question that he'll find a new home before training camp.

Bengals | To sign Tra Carson    Sun May 1, 02:56 PM

Free-agent RB Tra Carson (Texas A and M) will sign an undisclosed deal with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: Carson is a bruising downhill runner, but not much more. He could stick on the Bengals practice squad as a de facto backup to Jeremy Hill in the power running game.

Bengals | Trying out Blake Frohnapfel    Sun May 1, 02:11 PM

Free-agent QB Blake Frohnapfel (Massachusetts) will try out for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: Frohnapfel was a productive QB at UMASS, and he did a good job showcasing his skill set at the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year. We don't think he'll beat out Keith Wenning, the Bengals third-string QB behind Andy Dalton and A.J. McCarron.

Bengals | Cincy selects Tyler Boyd at No. 55    Fri Apr 29, 09:05 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Pittsburgh WR Tyler Boyd with the No. 55 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: A good returner who can run sharp routes. He isn't fast but he has tremendous hands and could be a very nice slot addition.

Bengals | Cincy selects William Jackson    Thu Apr 28, 10:54 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Houston CB William Jackson III with the 24th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Bengals needed to add some secondary talent and William Jackson III is a ballhawk who will generate picks. This selection also hosed the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who desperately needed a corner and while Artie Burns is solid, Jackson would have been a better fit.

Bengals | A.J. Hawk cut    Tue Apr 26, 12:35 PM

Bengals | Cedric Ogbuehi in line to start    Mon Apr 25, 11:20 PM

Cincinnati Bengals OT Cedric Ogbuehi appears to be in line to start at right tackle. 'He'll be one of the five,' offensive line coach Paul Alexander indicated Monday, April 25. 'He's got rare quickness and athleticism and he's got ideal physical, athletic and competitive traits. He's the real deal, the real package.'

Bengals | Michael Johnson was injured last year     Mon Apr 25, 03:15 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DE Michael Johnson (back) was hampered by a back issue much of last season. He's feeling healthy now, though.

Footballguys view: That explains a lot. Last year, Johnson entered the season with knee problems but it was this back issue that kept his production down. That's two years in a row with disappointing numbers. We'll see if a healthy Johnson can get back on track in 2016.

Bengals | Andy Dalton talks up Josh Doctson    Sun Apr 24, 09:43 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton said he worked out with TCU WR Josh Doctson and believes Doctson will be successful for any team that drafts him.

Footballguys view: Horned Frogs have to stick up for each other, right? Dalton should be praising Doctson as he's one of the best WRs in this draft class. We like Doctson's ability to carry a passing game. If there's such a thing as a "bellcow WR" then Docston is it. He can be heavily targeted, and he responds positively to a heavy workload. Doctson can make contested catches seem routine, and he's got an incredible nose for the end zone. He should be a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft.

Bengals | Tyler Kroft to be used more?    Sat Apr 23, 03:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Kroft could be more of a receiving threat in 2016 as the Bengals try to break in WR Brandon LaFell and possible rookie wide receivers, in the opinion of Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com.

Footballguys view: The Bengals are hurting after losing both Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamded Sanu (Falcons) in free agency. We think star TE Tyler Eifert certainly gets a larger role, but we're not so sure about Kroft. He's big and athletic, playing like a super-sized WR with ferocity as a blocker. Kroft needs to prove that he can consistently catch with his hands and be more effective on routes over the middle if he wants a larger role as a receiver in 2016.

Bengals | Taylor Mays signs with Bengals    Fri Apr 15, 02:14 PM

Free-agent FS Taylor Mays (Raiders) signed an undisclosed deal with the Cincinnati Bengals Friday, April 15.

Footballguys view: Mays is back with the Bengals to give them a hard-hitting player in their secondary. He will begin the year out of action due to a four-game suspension to start the 2016 season. The suspension is for violating the NFL's policy on substances of abuse.

Bengals | Cincinnati wants to keep Tyler Eifert     Thu Apr 14, 11:03 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert has exceeded all expectations, according to head coach Marvin Lewis, and beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. believes the Bengals will try to sign Eifert to a long-term extension in September of 2017.

Footballguys view: Eifert can be the best tight end in the league so long as he stays healthy. With the departure of Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons), Eifert is going to be an even larger part of the offense.

Bengals | Tyler Eifert optioned    Wed Apr 13, 03:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals TE Tyler Eifert's option was exercised Wednesday, April 13. He will remain with the Bengals through 2017.

Footballguys view: A good move for the Bengals here. He had a breakout season in 2016, and Eifert was a key piece of the passing game with 13 TDs on the season. With free agent WRs Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) moving on, Eifert may be more important to the offense than ever before.

Bengals | Cardale Jones works out for Cincy    Wed Apr 6, 03:45 PM

Ohio State QB Cardale Jones recently worked out for the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: The Bengals already have A.J. McCarron as a backup behind Andy Dalton. While they may add a QB in the draft to develop, Jones may be gone by the time they would consider a QB3.

Bengals | Hakeem Nicks visits with Cincy    Tue Apr 5, 05:05 PM

Free-agent WR Hakeem Nicks (Giants) worked out with the Cincinnati Bengals Tuesday, April 5, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bengals are still trying to upgrade their WR corps after losing both Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) in free agency. Nicks is nowhere near the player he used to be, and he won't be a fantasy factor if he signs with a new team.

Bengals | Andy Dalton throwing without restrictions    Tue Apr 5, 12:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB Andy Dalton (thumb) is throwing the ball again and has no restrictions with his thumb, and he has visited with passing specialist Tom House once already this offseason. Dalton isn't worried about the loss of WRs Marvin Jones and Mohamed Sanu in free agency this year.

Footballguys view: Dalton should be worried about the loss of two weapons on offense. Brandon LaFell is unlikely to be a quality replacement for Jones, and this isn't the year to draft a WR with a premium pick. The loss of OC Hue Jackson should impact his numbers in 2016. Add in the loss of talent, and we think Dalton could be more of a top-20 fantasy QB instead of the top-5 fantasy QB he was in 2013.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell ready to prove himself    Fri Apr 1, 09:34 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell said his desire to be able to play at a high level after battling injuries in 2015 has been motivation to work hard this offseason.

Footballguys view: LaFell has only briefly flashed during his pro career. He's inconsistent...even when healthy. The Bengals lost a lot when Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) moved on in free agency. Adding LaFell won't make up that difference.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell contract details    Thu Mar 31, 04:05 PM

Updating a previous report, Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell's deal is one year in length and has a base value of $2.5 million, including a $1 million signing bonus. He can earn an extra $500,000 for catches, too.

Footballguys view: He might fit as a slot guy, in which case he could be a WR3/WR4, especially in a PPR format. We've been burned by him before though and are curious how he does outside of New England.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell may be slot receiver    Wed Mar 30, 08:27 PM

Cincinnati Bengals WR Brandon LaFell likely will spend most of his time as a slot receiver during the 2016 season.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell joining Bengals    Wed Mar 30, 04:01 PM

Free-agent WR Brandon LaFell (Patriots) has agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Cincinnati Bengals, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: LaFell actually has a great opportunity, with no real competition for the #2 wide receiver job. Tyler Eifert and Giovani Bernard would still likely be ahead of him in the pecking order for targets, but Eifert is yet to play 16 games in a season. LaFell isn't draftable, but he should be on early season waiver wire watch lists. He was very productive in 2014 for New England, but an injury put him on the PUP to start 2015 and LaFell was never able to regain the consistency he found in the previous year.

Bengals | Karlos Dansby joining Bengals    Tue Mar 29, 11:17 AM

Free-agent LB Karlos Dansby (Browns) will sign with the Cincinnati Bengals Tuesday, March 29.

Footballguys view: The Bengals need to do something with Vontaze Burfict suspended the first three games of the year. Dansby wanted to find a home with a contender, and he's done that as the Bengals should push for a playoff spot and the AFC North title in 2016.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell close to deal with Bengals    Wed Mar 23, 08:29 AM

Free-agent WR Brandon LaFell (Patriots) is closing in on a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals Wednesday, March 23, according to a source.

Footballguys view: LaFell was able to be relevant in fantasy leagues in 2014 in a high-powered offense with a great quarterback. Cincinnati is an off-brand version of New England at quarterback, but otherwise can match the Patriots offensive potential. LaFell could return to relevance if he hogs the wide receiver targets than AJ Green doesn't get, and a Tyler Eifert injury would kick his ceiling up even higher. LaFell isn't worth a draft pick if he lands in Cincy, but he'll be on the early season waiver wire watch list.

Bengals | AJ McCarron won't be traded    Mon Mar 21, 05:43 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron will not be traded this offseason, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Footballguys view: Why would the Bengals trade a young quarterback with starting potential? It makes no sense to trade away McCarron...especially after Andy Dalton was banged up last season.

Bengals | Pat Sims re-signs    Wed Mar 16, 01:16 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DT Pat Sims re-signed an undisclosed deal with the Bengals Wednesday, March 16.

Bengals | Brandon LaFell visiting Bengals    Wed Mar 16, 10:58 AM

Free-agent WR Brandon LaFell (Patriots) will visit the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: With Marvin Jones (Lions) and Mohamed Sanu (Falcons) moving on in free agency, the Bengals need to find depth at the position. LaFell is inconsistent as the day is long, but he's got plenty of starting experience from his time with the Patriots and the Panthers.

Free-agent CB Adam Jones (Bengals) re-signed to a three-year deal with the Cincinnati Bengals Wednesday, March 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.
