Titans | Jason McCourty will not rush back    Sat Aug 29, 10:57 AM

Tennessee Titans CB Jason McCourty (groin) hopes to be ready to play in Week 1 but will not rush back before he is healthy.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine McCourty will be ready for the regular-season opener. He did not rule out the possibility of sitting out until after the team's Week 4 bye.

Titans | Dorial Green-Beckham does not play    Sat Aug 29, 10:28 AM

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham (ankle) was dressed for the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, but did not see any playing time. Green-Beckham suffered the ankle injury during practice Wednesday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners should be in love with Green-Beckham's upside. Redraft owners should consider him a late-round pick who has upside. Green-Beckham has incredible upside, but fantasy owners need to have patience with the rookie wide receiver.

Titans | David Cobb considered week-to-week    Sat Aug 29, 10:08 AM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb (calf) is considered week-to-week because of a calf injury, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Footballguys view: We like Cobb's potential as a starter, but this calf injury is holding him back. The Titans are turning to Bishop Sankey as their starter, and Cobb will have to wait in order to push him for playing time.

Titans | Dexter McCluster carving out a role    Sat Aug 29, 09:28 AM

Tennessee Titans RB Dexter McCluster rushed for 37 yards on five carries and caught two passes for 20 yards during the preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: McCluster is a forgotten man on the Titans roster, but he could work as a change-of-pace back behind Bishop Sankey. He's not fantasy relevant unless you play in a deep league.

Titans | Blidi Wreh-Wilson will not play    Fri Aug 28, 05:43 PM

Tennessee Titans CB Blidi Wreh-Wilson (ankle) will not play in the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, because of an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: Tennessee is not a defense you want in fantasy unless you are in a really tight corner. Avoid it.

Titans | David Cobb's work ethic under fire    Fri Aug 28, 01:17 PM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb (calf) needs to improve his work ethic, according to running backs coach Sylvester Croom. 'I like his natural running ability, his natural running instincts,' Croom said. 'But he has a long way to go. He has to learn how to be a pro as far as work ethic, taking care of his body, getting in here early and doing the little things it takes to be a pro. He still hasn't quite learned what being professional means, so he has to learn that. There's no scholarships here, and his work ethic has to be better. He has to learn to practice like you play in a game. Once he does that, he has a chance to be a good football player.'

Footballguys view: It's an interesting take, as he didn't have that question coming out of college. A lot of backs struggle with the transition from college to the NFL, as it's much different world. Hopefully he gets his act together and sees being left home for the third preseason game as the wake-up call it should be. We like Cobb for down the road this season, but he has to wake up. Right now he's an RB4 and he's behind Bishop Sankey.

Titans | More on Bishop Sankey's progress    Fri Aug 28, 01:17 PM

Updating previous reports, Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey has impressed his coaches with improvement this preseason. 'I think Bishop made significant improvement last week in practices as far as getting downhill and hitting the hole and it showed up in the game,' running backs coach Sylvester Croom said. 'That is something he has to continue to work on. I think from the first game to the last game his improvement was significant, and he played with a lot of confidence. He has to continue to work on that where it is consistently done that way. Pass protection, assignment-wise, he is doing a good job, but we still have to improve on technique. He needs to make the running style consistent.'

Footballguys view: A lot of pundits expect Sankey to give was to rookie David Cobb, but as he isn't traveling for the third preseason game, the rook is still behind the second year running back. We have Sankey as a low-end RB3 or a solid RB4, while Cobb is a solid RB4. They're both going about the same time in drafts right now in round eight. Cobb has the tenuous upside, while Sankey starts out as the more solid option, relatively speaking.

Titans | David Cobb out with calf injury    Fri Aug 28, 10:30 AM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb (calf) didn't make the trip for the third preseason game due to a calf injury.

Footballguys view: That's not a great sign for his chances to take the job outright. Most people expect Bishop Sankey to begin the season as a starter, with Cobb to slowly gain more and more carries over the course of the season. Both Cobb and Sankey are hovering in the RB4 rankings (with Cobb dipping into RB5 territory a little), and they are going virtually back to back in round eight of fantasy drafts right now. Your have to pick your poison with these two and hope for the best. Cobb has the upside, but rookie risk while Sankey has been unremarkable in his brief career.

Titans | Marcus Mariota wants to improve    Wed Aug 26, 04:34 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota and the rest of the offense want to improve on third-down conversions and finishing drives Friday, Aug. 28, against the Kansas City Chiefs. Mariota said the Titans could have done a lot better on third downs in their last game against the St. Louis Rams. Mariota added that he wants the team to build on not turning the ball over, getting first downs, playing with rhythm and building chemistry.

Footballguys view: Mariota has looked good so far in the preseason. Fantasy owners in re-draft leagues won't be rushing out to get him, but dynasty owners are certainly interested in his progress as a passer.

Titans | Bishop Sankey showing improvement    Tue Aug 25, 01:16 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey had 45 yards on six carries in the team's second preseason game against the St. Louis Rams, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt saw improvement from Sankey from the first week of the preseason. Sankey had just 15 yards on eight carries in Week 1 of the preseason against the Atlanta Falcons.

Footballguys view: We're not falling all over ourselves to get Sankey on our fantasy lineups, but this is a step in the right direction. We'll see if Sankey can hang onto the starting job this year. Rookie David Cobb should push him for the top spot, and he could take over if Sankey falters again this year.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger playing well    Tue Aug 25, 01:14 PM

Tennessee Titans backup QB Zach Mettenberger has performed at a high level in training camp and the preseason, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt laughed off a suggestion that the Titans should trade Mettenberger before the season starts. Mettenberger has gone 15-for-20 for 220 yards and two touchdowns with one interception so far in preseason for a passer rating of 122.9.

Footballguys view: Mettenberger is not the quarterback of the future for the Titans as some thought he would be. He's the backup behind number-two overall pick Marcus Mariota.

Updating a previous report, Tennessee Titans CB Jason McCourty (groin) is expected to miss a few games after undergoing groin surgery Monday, Aug. 24, according to sources.

Footballguys view: At this time, we could see McCourty miss at least the first week of the regular season. Keep that in mind when you're considering guys like Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson in Week 1 as the Buccaneers take on the Titans.

Titans | Dorial Green-Beckham productive Sunday    Sun Aug 23, 11:40 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham had four catches on four targets for 40 yards in a preseason game against the St. Louis Rams Sunday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: Talent has never been a question with Green-Beckham. He came into college as the number one high school talent. Green-Beckham has off-field issues that caused him to fall in the draft. From a talent standpoint, Green-Beckham has top-10 upside and ability from this draft class. The titans will work him in as a reserve receiver to begin the season, but he's easily got the talent to start at some point as a rookie.

Titans | David Cobb works with starters    Sun Aug 23, 11:33 PM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb saw some work with the first-team offense in a preseason game against the St. Louis Rams Sunday, Aug. 23, finishing with 26 yards on eight carries.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Cobb can eventually replace Bishop Sankey as the starter for the Titans. We like Cobb's powerful running style and feel that he'd be more productive than Sankey. Cobb can grind down opponents as the game goes on, and he is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam. This RB battle is worth keeping an eye on--especially for those looking for late-round RB punch on their fantasy team.

Titans | Bishop Sankey solid Sunday    Sun Aug 23, 11:22 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey had six carries for 45 yards in a preseason game against the St. Louis Rams Sunday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Sankey can hold off rookie David Cobb for the starting job. Sankey had a disappointing rookie season (3.7 yards per carry, only two rushing touchdowns), and finished 2014 as the 43rd fantasy running back. He's changed his physique this offseason in an effort to be more productive. Keep an eye on this RB battle. Sankey should begin the season as the starter, but he could be replaced by Cobb if he struggles.

Titans | Marcus Mariota solid in second start    Sun Aug 23, 09:49 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota completed five of his eight pass attempts for 59 yards in a preseason game against the St. Louis Rams Sunday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: Mariota would have had an even better day if Dexter McCluster not dropped a touchdown pass. He's handling pressure well, and Mariota is going through progressions quickly. So far, so good for the rookie.

Titans | David Cobb to overtake Bishop Sankey?    Sat Aug 22, 02:59 PM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb could end up with more carries than RB Bishop Sankey by the end of the season, according to Paul Kuharsky of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Right now the two are ranked about the same by the Footballguys staff, with Sankey just a little further ahead. Right now, Cobb is trending just ahead of Sankey in ADP, with the former going in round eight and Sankey getting drafted in early round nine.

Titans | David Cobb to receive a look    Thu Aug 20, 12:37 PM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb will receive an extended look in the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 23, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Footballguys view: If it looks anything like Week 1 of the preseason, expect Cobb to overtake Bishop Sankey. He's worth an upside pick in the second half of your draft.

Titans | GM impressed with David Cobb    Wed Aug 19, 02:36 PM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb has performed well during training camp and has shown good vision and footwork, according to general manager Ruston Webster. 'David Cobb has kind of shown what we saw from him at the Senior Bowl and in college, his ability to run the football, his vision and his feet. If he continues along that path he can help us,' Webster said.

Footballguys view: Another day, and another positive report about Cobb. We like the rookie's skill set as a banger between the tackles--and as the eventual feature back. Cobb is determined, efficient and powerful as a runner. He lacks the speed to gash defenses, but he can grind down opponents and gets stronger as the game goes on. Cobb may begin the season as a backup behind Bishop Sankey, but he could overtake him as the starter at some point.

Titans | David Cobb wants more work     Tue Aug 18, 06:56 PM

Tennessee Titans rookie RB David Cobb wants to prove to the Titans that he can be a three-down running back. Cobb wants to stay on the field and block during passing downs, not just run the ball.

Footballguys view: We want Cobb to get more work too! The rookie is a powerful back with an efficient and determined running style. We like him better than Bishop Sankey, and fantasy owners shouldn't be surprised if (when?) Cobb takes over as the Titans lead back.

Titans | Justin Hunter trending up    Tue Aug 18, 01:37 AM

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter is 'trending up' in practice, head coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday, Aug. 17. The head coach wants Hunter to carry over the solid play into games.

Footballguys view: Hunter has always had the talent, but he's yet to play up to that potential. Don't draft Hunter, but keep him on your waiver-wire speed dial in deeper leagues.

Titans | David Cobb critiques himself    Mon Aug 17, 03:32 PM

Tennessee Titans rookie RB David Cobb said he wants to improve on his reads and breaking tackles after the Titans' first preseason game. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt must have seen something different, saying Cobb earned more time with the first-team offense after his performance.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to be alert here. Bishop Sankey could begin the season as the starter, but we believe Cobb is the better back and could take over at some point this year. Cobb is a powerful, efficient and determined runner. He's not going to break ankles, but he may break facemasks. He doesn't shy away from contact, and Cobb can create his own space as a runner because of his powerful lower body. With a larger opportunity, the rookie could easily outperform his current ADP (RB48, 11.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Titans | Line to blame for Bishop Sankey's play?    Sun Aug 16, 09:04 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey averaged just 1.9 yards per carry on eight rushing attempts in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Friday, Aug. 14, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt said some of Sankey's issues could be blamed on the play of the offensive line.

Footballguys view: Even if this is supposed to acquit Sankey, it still shouldn't make you more eager to draft him. The results tell the story no matter who is to blame.

Titans | Marcus Mariota runs option play    Sun Aug 16, 08:54 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota ran an option-based play during practice Sunday, Aug. 16. Operating out of shotgun, Mariota faked a handoff to RB Bishop Sankey before sprinting to the left and throwing a slightly forward pass to WR Harry Douglas.

Footballguys view: That one option play makes a headline is a sign that the Titans haven't exactly gone all-in on the read option running game. It could help both Mariota's fantasy stock and the overall running game if it is pulled out with some precision in execution.

Titans | Zaviar Gooden has torn hamstring    Sat Aug 15, 06:15 PM

Tennessee Titans LB Zaviar Gooden (hamstring) sustained a torn hamstring Friday, Aug. 15, per sources. It is uncertain if the injury is season ending.

Footballguys view: Gooden has not impressed on the field in two seasons, and this injury could end his third season. Good thing the Titans were only counting on him as a reserve behind Avery Williamson and Zach Brown.

Titans | David Cobb will see first-team reps    Sat Aug 15, 03:45 PM

Tennessee Titans RB David Cobb will probably receive some first-team repetitions throughout the preseason, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Footballguys view: Cobb is well on his way to overtaking Bishop Sankey. Sankey was a dud early on and Cobb destroyed 2nd and 3rd team defenders in the first preseason game. If this continues, Cobb should be a good flyer in the back half of drafts and Sankey could fall out.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger solid in relief    Fri Aug 14, 09:33 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger replaced QB Marcus Mariota early in the second quarter and went 8-for-11 passing for 129 yards with a touchdown and an interception in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Friday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: Mettenberger could be a trade target for QB needy teams if he has a good preseason. The Titans might reap a tidy profit on the sixth-round pick they invested last year.

Titans | Rough start for Marcus Mariota    Fri Aug 14, 09:09 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota threw an interception and lost a fumble on his first two drives in a preseason game against the Atlanta Falcons Friday, Aug. 14. He finished 7-of-8 for 94 yards and did not run the ball.

Footballguys view: Well that will at least put an end to the no interception in practice talk. More concerning is that the Titans didn't use him to run. While there's no incentive to tip their hand on use of Mariota as a runner and risk injury, the team does need some live reps to get in sync with a read option run attack playbook.

Titans | Delanie Walker will not play    Fri Aug 14, 06:25 PM

Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker (hand) will not play in the first preseason game Friday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: Walker suffered a cut on his hand that required 12 stitches in the webbing between his thumb and hand. He should be fine and back in practice very soon.

Titans | Marcus Mariota looking good at camp    Fri Aug 14, 05:08 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota has shown good knowledge of the playbook and skill during practice and still has not turned the ball over since the start of camp.

Titans | Bishop Sankey leading the backfield    Thu Aug 13, 08:58 AM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey has received the most first-team repetitions in training camp.

Footballguys view: Sankey is cheaper than last year and he is set up for a better opportunity. It's hard to knock any pick in the 9th/10th round or later, but Sankey has been a much improved player to pay off on any investment. Look his ADP to start to inch up on this news. David Cobb is a less attractive sleeper now.

Tennessee Titans WR Hakeem Nicks has supposedly looked faster than he has in a few years.

Tennessee Titans WR Harry Douglas is listed as the second starting receiver opposite of WR Kendall Wright.

Tennessee Titans WR Dorial Green-Beckham did some work with the first-team offense Monday, Aug. 10. 'I think it is a reward,' Titans receivers coach Shawn Jefferson said. 'DGB has shown the ability to pick up on the playbook very well. For a big guy he can run, and he sink his hips, and get out at the top of his routes. Putting him in with the first group kind of elevates that sense of urgency for him. He has done well. There have been so growing pains, but that kid is going to be all right.'

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright has been developing a solid chemistry with QB Marcus Mariota during training camp. Wright said he has learned to keep active during his routes since Mariota can extend plays.

Footballguys view: Wright has to be energized that he's playing with such an athletic and potentially playmaking quarterback. We like Wright as a low-end WR4 with upside. The veteran receiver should become a favorite target for the rookie this season.

Free-agent FB Zach Boren (Chargers) signed with the Tennessee Titans Friday, Aug. 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived/injured FB Connor Neighbors (undisclosed).

Footballguys view: Boren was a linebacker at Ohio State before shifting to running back. He spent some of 2013 on the Houston Texans' practice squad and the 2014 preseason with the San Diego Chargers but was cut before the end of camp. Likely the same thing will occur here.

Titans | Marcus Mariota struggles Friday    Fri Aug 7, 03:36 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Marcus Mariota went 9-for-17 during team drills at practice Friday, Aug. 7, which included four straight incompletions. He has gone 77-for-119 in team drills during training camp but still has not thrown an interception.

Footballguys view: Stop with the "zero interceptions" thing! It would be better for him to make mistakes in practice and learn from them. The struggles will be there for the rookie, but he's still got developmental upside. He's a great athlete, smart and is known as being coachable. We'll see if Mariota can get used to huddling, operating from under center and diagnosing defenses as he drops back.
