Titans | Zach Mettenberger receives praise    Mon Apr 20, 05:38 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger was applauded by TE Delanie Walker for recently organizing practice sessions. Walker said he's excited about Mettenberger showing leadership and initiative, adding that Mettenberger could be the franchise quarterback the Titans need.

Footballguys view: Mettenberger is no franchise quarterback. He's got a big arm, but accuracy has always been an issue for him. It was in college at both Georgia and LSU, and those same major problems plagued him last year as a rookie. We think the Titans make a move for a quarterback either in the draft or by trading their second-overall pick.

Titans | Kaelin Burnett re-signs    Mon Apr 20, 04:55 PM

Tennesee Titans LB Kaelin Burnett re-signed to a one-year deal Monday, April 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Titans signed Burnett off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad last November. He played in five games for Tennessee and had three special teams stops. He'll play in a similar role this season.

Titans | No offer to Stevie Brown    Mon Apr 20, 07:07 AM

Free-agent FS Stevie Brown (Giants) has not received a contract offer from the Tennessee Titans, but the team remains interested in him.

Footballguys view: Brown wants to prove he can bounce back after a disappointing season in 2014. He tore his ACL in 2013, but Brown was a good starter for the Giants in 2012..and he wants to get back to that level of play.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger leading workouts    Fri Apr 17, 02:41 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger has organized workouts with some of his teammates in Nashville this offseason.

Footballguys view: At this time, Mettenberger is the lead quarterback for the Titans. That's awful for their chances this year, so don't be surprised if they make a trade to acquire a quarterback like Philip Rivers in the near future. The Chargers may want to move up and draft Marcus Mariota.

Titans | Phillip Dorsett visiting Tennessee    Thu Apr 16, 10:28 AM

Miami (Fla.) WR Phillip Dorsett is visiting the Tennessee Titans Thursday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Phillip Dorsett has averaged more than 25 yards per catch since 2012 and can burn teams inside and out. Tennessee needs to keep building the offense for Zach Mettenberger, Philip Rivers or whomever ends up under center.

Titans | Vic Beasley visits    Thu Apr 16, 02:53 AM

Clemson LB Vic Beasley made a visit to the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: Beasley is considered one of the best edge-rushers in this draft class. He's a bend-and-burst rusher who can get around tackles on the outside. Beasley does a good job of closing on the ball-carrier quickly, and he should be a top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Titans | Philip Rivers to have new home?    Wed Apr 15, 12:05 AM

San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers is under contract for one more season, and he has expressed a desire to play out his deal. However, the Chargers might be interested in trading up to draft University of Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 2 pick currently held by the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Tennessee head coach Ken Whisenhunt was the Chargers offensive coordinator in 2013, and offensive coordinator Jason Michael was on the San Diego staff, too.

Titans | Hakeem Nicks visiting Titans    Mon Apr 13, 04:57 PM

Free-agent WR Hakeem Nicks (Colts) is visiting the Tennessee Titans Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Nicks insists that he can still play, but the film shows otherwise. He's lost more than a step, and Nicks is no longer the threat after the catch he used to be.

Titans | Byron Bell visiting Tennessee    Mon Apr 13, 10:20 AM

Free-agent OT Byron Bell (Panthers) is visiting the Tennessee Titans Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: The Titans are looking for help at the tackle position after letting Michael Oher go earlier this year. Bell played both tackle spots for the Panthers, but he's better suited to play on the right side of the line.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger the next Tom Brady?    Sun Apr 12, 10:03 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger is viewed as the steal of the 2014 NFL Draft by head coach Ken Whisenhunt and general manager Ruston Webster, and they view him as a poor man's version of New England Patriots QB Tom Brady.

Footballguys view: LOL, ROTFL and all that. Give us a break, Mettenberger is more likely to be the next Derek Anderson than he is the next Tom Brady. It's pathetic to even mention the two in the same sentence. Mettenberger has a rocket arm, but he's got little control and bad accuracy. Not exactly a Brady-like skill set right there. Keep dreaming Tennessee, we'll never see another Tom Brady again.

Titans | Marcus Mariota to visit Titans    Thu Apr 9, 07:58 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will visit the Tennessee Titans Thursday, April 9. Mariota has already worked out for Tennessee privately.

Footballguys view: Mariota is in play for Tennessee, but he doesn't appear to be a great fit with Ken Whisenhunt on first glance in terms of playing style and strengths. It appears that Mariota's destination will be a mystery with many possibilities right up until the moment he is chosen.

Titans | Jameis Winston to work out for Titans    Thu Apr 9, 07:56 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston will have a private workout with the Tennessee Titans Monday, April 13. The Titans have the second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Most analysts think Winston will go first overall to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: Winston going to Tampa at #1 isn't quite a foregone conclusion, but it's reasonable to assume it's going to happen. The Titans should do their due diligence if only to understand Winston a little better if they ever have to face him.

Titans | Breshad Perriman meeting with TEN    Wed Apr 8, 01:14 PM

Central Florida WR Breshad Perriman is scheduled to meet with the Tennessee Titans before the 2015 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: At 6'2" 215 pounds, Perriman is more explosive than other receivers his size. He can get off the line of scrimmage quickly and cleanly, and Perriman does a good job maintaining his speed out of the break. He's raw as a route-runner, but his physical skill set make him an intriguing option for teams in the late first or early second round. The Titans have Harry Douglas as their WR3 behind Kendall Wright and Justin Hunter at this time. Perriman could be added as a deep, big-play threat and reserve receiver during his rookie season.

Titans | Amari Cooper to visit Tennessee    Wed Apr 8, 12:03 PM

Alabama WR Amari Cooper will visit the Tennessee Titans next week.

Footballguys view: Cooper is our favorite wide receiver in this draft class. He's an outstanding route-runner who plays with the savvy of a 10-year veteran. Cooper has soft hands, and he can make difficult catches seem routine. He should be a top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Titans | Joseph Barksdale to visit    Tue Apr 7, 12:53 PM

Free-agent OT Joseph Barksdale (Rams) will visit with the Tennessee Titans this week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Titans are looking for help at the tackle position after releasing Michael Oher earlier this offseason, and Barksdale is one of the best remaining on the open market. He's got plenty of starting experience during his pro career (at multiple positions), but the Titans might not consider Barksdale a long-term answer at the position.

Titans | Daryl Williams to visit Tennessee    Mon Apr 6, 11:02 AM

Oklahoma OT Daryl Williams will visit the Tennessee Titans Monday, April 6.

Footballguys view: This is a good offensive tackle class, but Williams should be a late first- or early second-round pick. He's huge and can control his man at the point of the play. He does struggle with elite edge-rushers, limiting his pro potential to that of a right tackle or he could move inside to guard.

Titans | Stefen Wisniewski visiting Tennessee    Mon Apr 6, 10:52 AM

Free-agent C Stefen Wisniewski (Raiders) will visit the Tennessee Titans Monday, April 6.

Footballguys view: Offseason shoulder surgery is the reason that Wisniewski has gone unsigned so far. When healthy, he's a talented young center with good lateral agility after the snap. A few teams have shown interest, but no signing is imminent at this time.

Titans | Kevin White will visit Tennessee    Thu Apr 2, 06:14 PM

Former West Virginia WR Kevin White is scheduled to visit the Tennessee Titans. It's his only scheduled visit before the NFL Draft. The Titans hold the No. 2 overall pick.

Footballguys view: White is considered one of the best wide receivers in this draft....it's either him or Amari Cooper (Alabama). He's got the speed to take the top off the defense, and he tracks the ball extremely well. White has strong hands and can rip passes away from smaller defenders. He must learn to create better separation as a route-runner.

Titans | Craig Stevens restructures deal    Thu Apr 2, 12:19 AM

Tennessee Titans TE Craig Stevens re-structured his one-year deal Wednesday, April 1, according to sources. He was scheduled to make $3.5 million, but his new deal is similar to the $1.6 million deal he played for last season.

Footballguys view: Stevens gets to stay with the team, and the Titans get a bit more breathing room under the cap.

Titans | Heavily represented at Jameis Winston's pro day    Tue Mar 31, 12:01 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston's Tuesday, March 31, pro day is being attended by five staff members of the Tennessee Titans, including general manager Ruston Webster, head coach Ken Whisenhunt and offensive coordinator Jason Michael, according to NFL Network's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: The Titans are doing their best to show interest in Winston and Marcus Mariota (Oregon). We feel this could be a bluff to get other teams to trade up for either quarterback, and Tennessee may roll with Zach Mettenberger as their starter in 2015.

Link to story

Titans | Still interested in Joseph Barksdale     Mon Mar 30, 10:10 PM

The Tennessee Titans are still interested in free-agent OT Joseph Barksdale (Rams), but general manager Ruston Webster said the team will focus on the NFL Draft before re-visiting the free agent market.

Footballguys view: Well that makes two teams interested in Barksdale at least. He's a below average right tackle or guard, and that's why there's little market for his services. Barksdale is likely to return to the Rams on a team-friendly deal.

Titans | Marcus Mariota worked out for Titans    Sat Mar 28, 10:41 AM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota worked out for the Tennessee Titans shortly after his pro day.

Footballguys view: We just don't buy the Titans interest in Mariota. Make no mistake about it--they need a quarterback since Zach Mettenberger is technically their starter right now. We believe they're trying to get some team behind them nervous about Mariota's availability in order to initiate a trade.

Titans | Brandon Harris re-signs with Titans    Fri Mar 27, 11:53 AM

Free-agent CB Brandon Harris re-signed with the Tennessee Titans Friday, March 27, on a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: Harris was claimed on waivers last August after he was released by the Texans. He played in 11 games for the Titans last year, and he'll continue to play as a reserve corner in 2015.

Titans | Marcus Mariota would start for Titans    Tue Mar 24, 01:01 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is a realistic option for the Tennessee Titans with the second overall selection in this year's NFL Draft, and head coach Ken Whisenhunt is impressed enough with Mariota that he would feel confident with him as the team's starting quarterback over QB Zach Mettenberger right off the bat in 2015. 'If we pick him at No. 2, you definitely think he can be the Day 1 starter,' Whisenhunt said. 'He was impressive. ... Just the short time we spent with him on the board, he was very good.' Whisenhunt dismissed the notion that he needs a pocket-based quarterback in his offense to succeed. Whisenhunt could also be trying to generate interest in the No. 2 pick if the Titans would want to trade out of it.

Footballguys view: The Titans continue to promote the fact they're interested in a quarterback at 2nd overall. However, we still get the feeling they're (wisely) putting that notion out there to see if some team will trade up in the draft. They could certainly use Mariota, because if they don't draft him then we'll see Zach Mettenberger as their starter.

Titans | Jameis Winston to visit Tennessee    Thu Mar 19, 09:55 PM

Former Florida State QB Jameis Winston will visit the Tennessee Titans and have a private workout with the team sometime around March 31.

Footballguys view: The Titans are taking a look here, but even with the second-overall pick Winston will be gone. It's the worst kept secret in the league that the Buccaneers have zeroed in on Winston as the first pick.

Titans | Byron Stingily agrees to terms    Thu Mar 19, 03:22 PM

Free-agent OT Byron Stingily (Titans) agreed to terms with the Tennessee Titans Thursday, March 19, on a multi-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Stingily will return to the team for which he has started 9 (out of 20) games in four seasons. Eight of those starts were at right tackle and he could be in line for that spot this year with the departure of Michael Oher.

Titans | Trae Waynes to work out    Wed Mar 18, 03:29 PM

Michigan State CB Trae Waynes said he is scheduled to have a private workout with the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Waynes is arguably the best cornerback in this draft. He's got the length at 6'1" to hang with taller receivers on downfield routes. Waynes does a good job of re-routing his man, and he's got the recovery speed to make up ground in a hurry.

Titans | Justin Blalock visits    Tue Mar 17, 09:29 AM

Free-agent OG Justin Blalock (Falcons) recently visited with the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Blalock spent eight seasons as the left guard for the Falcons, missing just three games during that time. He's not a fantastic option as his play has slipped a bit recently, but Blalock would be a decent addition to the Titans offensive line.

Titans | Tennessee will host rookie QBs    Mon Mar 16, 05:41 PM

Former Florida State QB Jameis Winston and former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota will have in-house visits with the Tennessee Titans, although specific dates have not been set yet.

Footballguys view: We don't believe the Titans are that interested in rookie quarterbacks, but they want the teams behind them in the draft to think they are. We'll see if a team like the Eagles can make the jump in the first round.

Titans | Perrish Cox signs with Tennessee    Sat Mar 14, 04:33 PM

Free-agent CB Perrish Cox (49ers) signed with the Tennessee Titans Saturday, March 14.

Footballguys view: Cox has turned into a pretty good corner, and he picked off five passes for the 49ers last season. His addition will move Blidi Wreh-Wilson to a slot corner in nickel packages.

Titans | Tennessee fortifies defense with two    Fri Mar 13, 08:35 AM

Free-agent LB Brian Orakpo (Redskins) and DE Derrick Morgan (Titans) were signed by the Tennessee Titans to undisclosed deals Friday, March 13.

Footballguys view: Two strong additions to the defense here. Orakpo needed a fresh start after an injury-riddled career in Washington. He had torn pectoral muscles for two of the past three seasons, but when healthy Orakpo can get about 10 sacks per year. Morgan began his career as a DE in the Titans 4-3 defense, but last year he looked good at outside linebacker as the team switched to a 3-4.

Free-agent SS Da'Norris Searcy (Bills) agreed to a four-year, $24 million deal with the Tennessee Titans Tuesday, March 10. The deal includes $10.5 million in guarantees.

Footballguys view: Searcy takes the place of Bernard Pollard on the defense. Pollard was released earlier this year, and now Searcy will be roaming on defense. He plays close to the line of scrimmage, and Searcy is known as an intimidator.

Titans | Interested in Brian Orakpo    Tue Mar 10, 01:13 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent LB Brian Orakpo is drawing interest from the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Orakpo is a talented pass-rusher who has been drawing a lot of interest on the open market. Lack of durability is a major concern for Orakpo, and that should be factored into the next contract he gets.

Titans | Harry Douglas agrees with Tennessee    Tue Mar 10, 01:07 PM

Free-agent WR Harry Douglas (Falcons) agreed to a three-year deal with the Tennessee Titans Tuesday, March 10.

Free-agent DL Derrick Morgan (Titans) is still drawing interest from the Tennessee Titans. The club is letting him get a value of what he is worth during the three-day negotiating window with other teams.

Footballguys view: The Titans would be wise to wrap up Morgan with a new long-term deal. Morgan worked well in his first year playing in a 3-4 defense. He finished last year with seven sacks, and Morgan could have a better total this year.

Titans | Jay Cutler headed to Nashville?    Sat Mar 7, 12:47 AM

If the Chicago Bears decide to try and trade QB Jay Cutler, one NFL source said Friday, March 8, that the Tennessee Titans are the only realistic destination in terms of a trade. If Cutler is on the roster Thursday, March 12, a $10 million guarantee for 2016 kicks in.

Footballguys view: We could see that. The Titans can't move into 2015 with Zach Mettenberger as their starter, can they? Cutler could go back to Tennessee where he played college football at Vanderbilt, and try to make the Titans better. On March 12th a portion of his 2016 salary will become guaranteed with the Bears. We have a feeling a deal gets done before then.
