Titans | Bishop Sankey earning praise    Tue Jul 29, 09:24 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey earned praise from head coach Ken Whisenhunt for his quick cuts and willingness to lower his shoulder during practice Tuesday, July 29. Whisenhunt also said that Sankey was drafted in part because he is a good fit for the offensive system.

Footballguys view: Sankey is going to play the Ryan Mathews role in Whisenhunt's offense. The rookie is looking at a large role for the Titans this year. His current ADP is RB20 (4.09) in 12-team PPR leagues. Sankey lacks any elite trait to his game, but he can do it all. With a poor offensive line, Sankey had to do a lot of creating on his own during his college career at Washington. He's a jump-cutter who loves to make defenders miss. He has soft hands as a receiver and puts forth good effort in pass-protection.

Titans | Shonn Greene leaves practice    Tue Jul 29, 04:16 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Shonn Greene left practice with a trainer Tuesday, July 28. Greene missed time this offseason with a right knee injury, but this could be something different.

Footballguys view: Greene may be squarely on the roster bubble this year. Fantasy owners are salivating at the idea of rookie Bishop Sankey being the lead back for the Titans without Greene taking away any touches. Sankey's ADP is RB20 (4.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Titans | Jake Locker encouraged, working hard    Mon Jul 28, 03:31 PM

Tennesse Titans QB Jake Locker said the offensive rhythm was better in practice Monday, July 28. Locker said he's focusing on accuracy during training camp as head coach Ken Whisenhunt has challenged him in that area.

Footballguys view: Whisenhunt is a quality coach who can craft an explosive offense. Locker is in a make-or-break year this season. He needs to stay healthy and play consistently if he wants to stay as the Titans number one quarterback.

Titans | Looking for Shonn Greene to lose weight    Mon Jul 28, 01:05 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Shonn Greene needs to lose five to ten pounds during training camp, according to the coaching staff.

Footballguys view: Greene is coming off of knee surgery, so this isn't as bad as the typical "out of shape" camp report, but Greene certainly is doing nothing to hold off second-round pick Bishop Sankey while he is just trying to drop weight. Undrafted rookie Antonio Andrew is a name to remember if Greene struggles to get to where the coaches want him to be, and journeyman Jackie Battle could also play a larger role.

Titans | Shonn Greene good to go    Fri Jul 25, 12:52 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Shonn Greene (knee) is ready for training camp after missing time in the offseason due to a right knee injury, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Footballguys view: Shonn Greene is so average, he makes average backs look exciting. A one-dimensional back with two gears - kinda slow and almost as slow - he will lose this job to rookie Bishop Sankey. The only question is when.Right now we see him as a RB5, while Sankey is our pick for the offense as a low-end RB2 or a high-end RB3. A versatile, multidimensional back, Sankey can run well between the tackles an catch the ball a bit. How much he is ultimately on the field might depend on pass-blocking, but we're bullish on him.

Titans | Jurrell Casey to report    Fri Jul 25, 09:39 AM

Tennessee Titans DT Jurrell Casey will report to camp Friday, July 25, as talks continue on a contract extension.

Footballguys view: The two sides have been talking for some time, so it's not a shock that he's in camp. It's likely a good sign that they'll work something out sooner than later. He had 10.5 sacks last year - a huge leap from the 5.5 he'd had total in his first two years - and the Titans will want to lock him up before he repeats the feat and hits the market. Be cautious with relying on him too much in fantasy IDP leagues though - if he sees the sack totals drop, his tackles don't produce a ton of fantasy points.

Titans | Andy Levitre out two weeks    Fri Jul 25, 09:29 AM

Tennessee Titans OG Andy Levitre (appendicitis) will miss two weeks after having an appendectomy Thursday, July 24.

Footballguys view: This wouldn't seem like an issue if he hadn't missed the whole offseason program as he was recovering from a hip issue. At the end of the day, Levitre is a workhorse and doesn't miss games so he should be fine. Hopefully that will continue to be the case and he gets healthy in time for Week 1 as the team needs the stability.

Titans | Bishop Sankey improving    Thu Jul 24, 06:35 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Bishop Sankey admitted he's still learning the offense and knows there is room for improvement. Sankey wants to run more detailed routes, know where the yard-lines are, where to take his breaks and work on his pass protection, among other things.

Footballguys view: Sankey is a rookie running back to watch. With Shonn Greene fighting to come back from a knee injury, Sankey may get a sizable role in 2014. We're not crazy about his talent (goes down on contact too easily), but fantasy owners need to understand that a big opportunity may be there under new Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Sankey has a current ADP of RB20 (4.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger punched in bar    Mon Jul 21, 06:22 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger was allegedly sucker punched in a Nashville bar this weekend but did not need medical attention. The owner of the bar said Mettenberger did not throw any punches.

Footballguys view: Mettenberger was known as a bit of a rowdy quarterback on the field, so perhaps that translates to his bar attitude as well. He's competing to be the team's third-string quarterback behind Jake Locker and Charlie Whitehurst.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger not injured    Mon Jul 21, 10:43 AM

Tennessee Titans QB Zach Mettenberger was rumored to have broken his hand in an accident over the weekend, but that rumor is false.

Footballguys view: Mettenberger is a strong-armed rookie who will be a developmental QB for the Titans this year. Jake Locker and Charlie Whitehurst will be the two QBs above him on the depth chart.

Titans | Justin Hunter getting praise    Wed Jul 16, 05:44 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Justin Hunter is drawing big comparisons to retired WR Randy Moss from WR Michael Preston. 'Not only is the sky the limit, I think he's going to be alright (personally),' Preston said.

Footballguys view: Hunter has an intriguing skill set because of his size/speed combination. He could be a breakout player for the Titans in 2014. His routes improved as a rookie last year, and the limited experience he gained in 2013 is invaluable. Watch him closely in the preseason to see if he's become a favorite of QB Jake Locker.

Titans | Shonn Greene no lock to make roster    Tue Jul 15, 12:14 AM

Tennessee Titans RB Shonn Greene (knee) could be cut if his injured right knee continues to prevent him from working out this offseason, according to Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. Wyatt believes the team will opt to save the $2.3 million it owes Greene if he won't be able to contribute.

Footballguys view: An interesting thing for fantasy owners to keep an eye on here. If Greene is not healthy and released, the team would turn to rookie Bishop Sankey as their top running back. With a poor offensive line, Sankey had to do a lot of creating on his own during his college career at Washington. He's a jump-cutter who loves to make defenders miss. He has soft hands as a receiver and puts forth good effort in pass-protection. However, he struggles to keep his feet after contact and lacks any elite trait. His current ADP is RB20 (4.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Titans | Jackie Battle in good shape to make team    Tue Jul 15, 12:07 AM

Tennessee Titans RB Jackie Battle is expected to make the 53-man roster, according to Jim Wyatt of The Tennessean. Wyatt believes Battle will be the team's starting fullback.

Footballguys view: Battle can do a little bit of everything. He's a running back/fullback 'tweener who can run in between the tackles and is a decent receiving option out of the backfield. Battle may get more of an opportunity this year if Shonn Greene struggles to stay healthy or is cut.

Titans | Charlie Whitehurst proving himself    Mon Jul 14, 02:24 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Charlie Whitehurst recently said he wanted to gain the respect of his teammates after moving to the Titans. He said he wanted to show them what he could do and he feels that he's done that this offseason. Whitehurst is currently the Titans' No. 2 quarterback.

Footballguys view: He's essentially locked in as the primary backup behind Jake Locker at this time. Whitehurst knows the system well because he followed new head coach Ken Whisenhunt over from the San Diego Chargers. We'll see if he can hold off rookie Zach Mettenberger for the primary backup spot.

Titans | Bishop Sankey in great shape, focusing mentally    Thu Jul 10, 05:37 PM

Tennessee Titans rookie RB Bishop Sankey recently said he's in great shape and is reviewing plays every day with running backs coach Sylvester Croom. Sankey believes he can have a big impact once he gets plays down and used to his teammates

Footballguys view: All he really has in front of him is Shonn Greene so he should have the starting job locked up by.....what time is it? Whatever, he'll win it soon. When that happens we could see him emerge as a RB2, though some of the staff has reservations about his ability to handle the workload. For now, think RB3 with a lot of upside, but make sure to read our training camp coverage (SHAMELESS PLUG) to know how he looks and whether you need to move him up in your rankings.

Titans | Shaun Phillips out to prove himself    Thu Jul 10, 04:46 PM

Tennessee Titans LB Shaun Phillips still feels the need to earn respect at 33 years old. Phillips recently said 'there may be some guys who have never heard of me and may not give me the respect I deserve.' Phillips added that in order to gain that respect, he needs to make them notice his play. Phillips signed a two-year deal with the Titans this offseason.

Footballguys view: Having a chip on your shoulder is the way a veteran stays on the field. Expect him to put some good games together and he could approach the 10 sacks he had last year (19 in the last two seasons total).

Titans | Kendall Wright working with former college teammate    Wed Jul 9, 04:26 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright has recently been working out with Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III.

Footballguys view: Wright was a superstar with Griffin at Baylor, but his deep ball game hasn't carried over to the NFL. He was a great PPR play with Ryan Fitzpatrick last year, but unless Wright runs more downfield routes and Jake Locker plays well this season, he might be a disappointment for fantasy leagues in his third year.

Titans | Derek Hagan has impressive offseason    Tue Jul 8, 04:04 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Derek Hagan has had an impressive offseason, and could be in the running for a roster spot if he continues to impress in training camp. 'It is wide open, and that is what this coaching staff has been telling me,' Hagan said. 'When your number is called, do your job the right way, and that is what I have been known to do, and that is why I have been able to last in this league for so long.

Footballguys view: Hagan has the physical attributes the NFL loves in a wide receiver, but his hands have been too inconsistent to lock down a long-term job anywhere during his career. He won't have any prospective fantasy value even if he makes the team, but it could be at the expense of Brian Robiskie, another once highly touted receiver trying to revive his career.

Titans | Hope Zach Mettenberger can develop    Mon Jul 7, 05:25 PM

The Tennessee Titans hope QB Zach Mettenberger can develop this upcoming season and then compete for the starting or backup quarterback job in 2015. QB Jake Locker will be the starting quarterback, and QB Charlie Whitehurst is the clear favorite for the No. 2 quarterback.

Footballguys view: Mettenberger is coming off of an ACL tear and probably will not be ready to take the reins in 2014, even on a tryout basis. Whitehurst was with head coach Ken Whisenhunt in San Diego last year, and the team also grabbed Tyler Wilson after the Raiders gave up on him, so there's no reason to rush Mettenberger.

Titans | Two to compete for kicker job    Thu Jul 3, 06:57 PM

Tennessee Titans PKs Maikon Bonani and Travis Coons will compete for the kicker job during training camp. Bonani may have an edge because he has a stronger leg.

Footballguys view: The Titans aren't looking like scoring machines, but there could be value if the winner has a good enough leg to hit long field goals.

Titans | Shonn Greene will need to compete for time    Thu Jul 3, 06:54 PM

Tennessee Titans RB Shonn Greene (knee) will need to compete for playing time during training camp, because he missed 13 practices this offseason while recovering from offseason surgery.

Footballguys view: We've never bought in on Shonn Greene and think Bishop Sankey brings a lot more to the table. We can see Sankey as a mid-range RB2 while Greene is no more than a RB4 right now.

Titans | Marc Anthony to compete for roster spot    Thu Jul 3, 06:53 PM

Tennessee Titans CB Marc Anthony will be given the chance to compete for a spot on the final roster during training camp, according to head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Anthony said he worked mostly as an outside cornerback during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The Titans are revamping a few spots and need to find a replacement for Alterraun Verner. Anthony is decent in coverage but lacks good speed in recovering when he makes a mistake.

Titans | Coach says Jake Locker has good footwork    Wed Jul 2, 01:25 PM

Tennessee Titans quarterbacks coach John McNulty said QB Jake Locker uses good posture in the pocket and plays on his toes, which helps him move from one target to another. 'Once you step to one guy, you can't just step over. You've got to be in that football position and move your whole operation. I think that helps him, he plays kind of up on his toes, he's always in a football position. Some of these big guys are straight up and down and when their first guy is not there, their foot is planted and they just step to the next guy. It's really as much getting your shoulders and hips in line as it is your feet. The way he plays, he's able to do that,' McNulty said.

Footballguys view: This should come as no surprise. Locker has always been mechanically sound, both in throwing mechanics and footwork. The problem of accuracy still remains, and it's quite a mystery that nobody has been able to solve. How do you fix accuracy when mechanics are sound? Locker had 54 percent accuracy in college at Washington. During his pro career Locker averaged a 57 percent completion rating. The league average is 61.7 percent.

Titans | Delanie Walker has high expectations    Wed Jul 2, 12:07 PM

Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker has high expectations for the team's offense this year, and he's a believer that QB Jake Locker is primed to have a big season as he leads the offense. Walker's goal is to catch 80 passes this year after he had a career-high 60 receptions for 571 yards and a career-high six touchdowns in 2013.

Footballguys view: We're excited to see what Walker can do under new head coach Ken Whisenhunt. Throughout his coaching career, Whisenhunt has been creative and effective in finding multiple ways to use his tight ends. Walker could be the beneficiary of that this season. We like him as a low end TE2 with upside.

Titans | Zach Mettenberger wants to start    Tue Jul 1, 01:43 PM

Tennessee Titans rookie QB Zach Mettenberger recently said he wants to prove that he deserves the starting quarterback role. Mettenberger added that if he isn't the starter, he's going to push fellow QBs Jake Locker and Charlie Whitehurst to make them earn their jobs.

Footballguys view: The desire to start has to be there, but the reality is that the rookie has a lot to learn in the pros. Mettenberger has a rocket arm, but his decision making and accuracy leave a lot to be desired. We appreciate the rookies mindset, but we would be shocked to see him start in 2014 unless injuries hit on the depth chart in front of him.

Titans | Collin Mooney on roster bubble    Mon Jun 30, 04:38 PM

Tennessee Titans FB Collin Mooney may not make the team's final roster. RB Jackie Battle is being given the opportunity to double as a running back and fullback, and it is still to be determined how much a fullback will be featured under head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Footballguys view: Mooney is a good blocker and receiver out of the backfield, but fullbacks are the dinosaurs of the NFL. We'd be surprised to see him make much of an impact even if he does make the 53-man roster.

Titans | Looking for Jake Locker to be pocket passer    Mon Jun 30, 03:47 PM

Tennessee Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt is looking to make QB Jake Locker a pocket passer in his offense even though mobility is one of Locker's strengths. The team will still use rollouts and bootlegs at times but most of Locker's passes will come out of the pocket. Whisenhunt has been happy with how well Locker has picked up the offense this offseason. 'Jake works hard,' Whisenhunt said. 'He's done a great job as far as studying the offense and understanding his reads. He's really done a good job with a lot of little things - his footwork, his techniques.'

Footballguys view: It has to be a make-or-break year for Locker in 2014. The team has a new regime, led by new head coach Ken Whisenhunt. If Locker doesn't stay healthy and play up to his potential, the team could start looking for a new franchise quarterback. Whisenhunt worked wonders with Philip Rivers last year, and perhaps he could help boost Locker's stock in 2014.

Titans | Michael Roos will need to make adjustments    Mon Jun 30, 02:43 PM

Tennessee Titans OT Michael Roos said he does not expect offensive line coach Bob Bostad to completely change his technique but does expects to make some changes that will help him in the new offense. 'I think there's a fine line when you talk about taking a guy and completely changing something he's done that's been working,' Roos said. 'It's more like little tweaks here and there to help in this new scheme - visually where your eyes go, and your feet and hand placements.'

Titans | Michael Preston in the mix for fourth receiver spot    Sat Jun 28, 08:55 PM

Tennessee Titans WR Michael Preston has impressed wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson and has a shot at being the team's fourth wide receiver this year. 'He is my jack of all trades,' Jefferson said. 'He knows all the positions. I can plug him in anywhere, he hustles, blocks, and is a great teammate. He has a great chance, but there is a lot of competition at this position. Right now, I'm not making any predictions, but as a coach I can't live without him. That's how much he means to me as a player and a person.'

Footballguys view: Preston is a big target who can track passes over his shoulder. He's an interesting prospect to monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. We have our doubts about QB Jake Locker, but we're intrigued by what the offense could look like under new head coach Ken Whisenhunt.

Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator Ray Horton said LBs Derrick Morgan and Kamerion Wimbley have smooth transitions from defensive ends in a 4-3 defensive alignment to outside linebackers in a 3-4 defensive alignment.

Footballguys view: Horton is one of the best defensive coordinators in the game today. He should be able to build a swarming defense with the Titans this year. Horton will known how to get the best out of both Morgan and Wimbley in 2014.

Titans | Taylor Lewan will learn right tackle position     Thu Jun 26, 02:50 PM

Tennessee Titans OT Taylor Lewan will learn the right tackle position, according to offensive line coach Bob Bostad. 'I know this for sure,' Bostad said. 'Taylor has to be able to play both sides.' Lewan said he felt vastly improved working on the right side of the line, but that it is still a work in progress.

Footballguys view: Michael Roos is holding down the left tackle and should be fine, having been ranked as the 16th best tackle in the NFL by Pro Football Focus. Lewan will have to overcome Michael Oher at right tackle to win that starting job, and the team has spent time teaching him both sides of the line which leads us to believe that for 2014 he may be a backup. The upside of all this is, the Titans have coninued to improve their offensive line which is good for Shonn Greene and rookie Bishop Sankey as well as the passing offense.

Titans | OC happy with Jake Locker's offseason    Wed Jun 25, 09:45 PM

Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Jason Michael said he has been happy with how QB Jake Locker (foot) performed this offseason. 'From day one, he's worked his butt off from rehabilitation of his foot to jumping in the playbook, to how he's gone about his preparation on the field. It's been a frustrating go at times with his foot, but he's never shown it. He's a poised man. I'm excited about working with him. He does some good things that we've already seen,' Michael said.

Footballguys view: Locker is in a bit of a do or die year at the end of his rookie contract. He'll either hit the market as a young quarterback on the rise, or a failure who is trying to prove that he compete to start again in the NFL. He has a QB-friendly head coach in Ken Whisenhunt, and should not be counted out as a possible fantasy factor because of his ability as a runner.
