Jets | Geno Smith protecting ball better    Thu Jul 31, 04:09 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has fixed his turnover problems so far this offseason, according to offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg.

Footballguys view: We'll see whether it holds under live fire next week when they actually play a game. The Jets need to have Smith on point and protecting the ball if they are to be successful and if Smith cannot do that, he will probably find the bench very quickly.

Jets | Calvin Pryor cleared for physical activity    Thu Jul 31, 01:27 PM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor (concussion) has been cleared for physical activity after suffering a concussion. Pryor has not been cleared for contact.

Footballguys view: The Jets will be careful with the talented rookie here. They'll continue to follow NFL protocol as Pryor returns from this concussion. He's a hard-hitter who plays with little regard for his body or personal safety. Keep an eye on Pryor to make sure he avoids having concussion problems in his first year as a pro.

Jets | No first-team snaps for Michael Vick    Thu Jul 31, 12:25 PM

New York Jets QB Michael Vick did not take any first-team snaps in practice Thursday, July 31.

Footballguys view: This is all Geno Smith, all the time. The team will roll with Smith until either he catches fire and implodes or gets hurt. They want to know if Smith is the long term answer and they won't find that out on the bench. Given that we think Rex Ryan is coaching for his job, we can expect a quick hook if Smith struggles out of the gate. Neither Vick nor Smith is a guy you want on your fantasy roster initially, though Vick is an interesting stash as the weapons this offense has should make a guy like Vick very productive, until he inevitably gets hurt.

Jets | Calvin Pryor in no contact jersey    Thu Jul 31, 11:20 AM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor (concussion) is wearing a no contact jersey during practice Thursday, July 31.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him as they can't afford to risk their physical, big-hitting safety with another concussion in camp. He'll see some action in preseason games but we may not see full-Pryor until the regular season.

Jets | Calvin Pryor doing individual drills    Thu Jul 31, 10:40 AM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor (concussion) is doing individual drills in practice Thursday, July 31.

Footballguys view: The Jets have to be happy to see the guy back and delivering concussion rather than getting them. On the other hand, as his game is predicated by a high level of physicality, getting concussions has to be a concern for Pryor, though it wasn't an issue in college.

New York Jets CB Johnny Patrick (hamstring) left practice early Wednesday, July 30, because of a hamstring injury.

Jets | Three do not practice    Wed Jul 30, 01:19 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (hamstring), WR David Nelson (groin) and SS Calvin Pryor (concussion) did not participate in practice Wednesday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Pryor's recovery is the one to watch here. He plays with a hard-hitting style and if concussions become an issue, it could cost him a lot of games, or even shorten his career.

Jets | Greg Salas, Daryl Richardson making case for roster spots    Tue Jul 29, 09:44 PM

New York Jets WR Greg Salas had two difficult catches during practice Tuesday, July 29, and RB Daryl Richardson made several big runs. Dom Cosentino of The Star-Ledger believes both players have improved their chances of making the roster during training camp.

Footballguys view: Salas has always been a good route-runner, but he had trouble catching the ball earlier in his career with the Rams. Richardson was a starter for the Rams at the beginning of last season, but now he's trying to catch on as a reserve runner behind Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory with the Jets.

Jets | Chris Johnson feeling good    Tue Jul 29, 06:33 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson (knee) said he feels good now that he's been able to move laterally in practice.

Footballguys view: The Jets are going to give Johnson some time off during camp. There's no need to have the veteran out there every day grinding. This move (in addition to using Chris Ivory as a change of pace) could help keep Johnson fresh in 2014.

Jets | Geno Smith on shorter leash?    Tue Jul 29, 05:42 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith may be on a shorter leash this year with QB Michael Vick as his backup. Head coach Rex Ryan said the team's quarterback situation is ideal in that there is a veteran backup waiting who knows the system if Smith doesn't succeed.

Footballguys view: This is what we've suspected all along. Smith could be the quarterback of the future for this team, but he'll have to play well to keep his job. Vick has a ton of experience and could take over for Smith if the second-year pro struggles. It's a make-or-break year for Rex Ryan, and he needs to do whatever he can to win games.

Jets | Calvin Pryor sits, Jace Amaro limited    Tue Jul 29, 04:39 PM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor (concussion) did not practice and TE Jace Amaro (knee) was limited Tuesday, July 29. Head coach Rex Ryan said Pryor is progressing, however.

Footballguys view: The team will be careful with both rookies here. Pryor is a big-hitter who can be an enforcer near the line of scrimmage. Amaro is a raw-but-athletic move tight end who could develop into a nice weapon for the Jets offense.

Jets | No practice for Calvin Pryor    Tue Jul 29, 03:09 PM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor (concussion) did not participate in practice Tuesday, July 29.

Jets | Alex Green exits again    Tue Jul 29, 10:47 AM

New York Jets RB Alex Green (chest) returned to practice Tuesday, July 29, but is in the trainers' tent for evaluation again.

Footballguys view: Green is working for a reserve spot with the Jets this year. He needs to stay healthy if he wants to beat out guys like Daryl Richardson or Bilal Powell.

Jets | Jace Amaro returns    Tue Jul 29, 10:08 AM

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Jets here. Amaro is a raw, but talented move tight end who can attack the deep middle seam of the defense. We'll see if he can stay healthy and work on building chemistry with second-year quarterback Geno Smith.

Jets | Chris Ivory likely to be goal line back    Tue Jul 29, 09:45 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is likely to be the team's goal line back, according to running backs coach Anthony Lynn.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. The Chris Johnson/Chris Ivory RBBC will be interesting to watch unfold this year. It's a difficult situation for fantasy owners to navigate, but the questions are already priced into their average draft position. Johnson has a current ADP of RB26 (5.08) and Ivory has an ADP of RB53 (13.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson (knee) fully participated in practice Sunday, July 27. It appears Johnson will be limited or get the day off every third practice.

Footballguys view: Not a big deal here. There are many veterans who get some time off during training camp. Johnson will be the lead back for the Jets this year if healthy. His current ADP is RB26 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Updating previous reports, New York Jets S Calvin Pryor (concussion) suffered a concussion during a special teams drill Saturday, July 26, according to head coach Rex Ryan. It is unknown if Pryor will be held out of team meetings.

Footballguys view: The team will follow NFL protocol before allowing Pryor back out on the football field. He's a hard-hitting safety who is known for making big collisions happen on the football field. It may take some time before he gets back out there.

Jets | Jace Amaro update    Sun Jul 27, 12:58 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets TE Jace Amaro (knee) said he should return to practice Tuesday, July 29. The Jets are off Monday, July 28.

Jets | Jace Amaro exits     Sun Jul 27, 11:54 AM

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro (knee) left practice early Sunday, July 27. Amaro has his right knee wrapped in ice.

Footballguys view: The rookie tight end is a talented player who can attack the seam of a defense. Hopefully this knee injury is just minor. The Jets don't have a great group of tight ends behind Amaro. Jeff Cumberland, Zach Sudfeld and Chris Pantale are battling for spots on the roster at the tight end position.

Jets | Chris Johnson sits    Sat Jul 26, 03:05 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson (knee) was not a part of team drills Saturday, July 26.

Footballguys view: This happens with veterans sometimes. Johnson is one of those guys who may get a day off here and there during training camp. The team wants him near full strength at the start of the regular season.

New York Jets S Calvin Pryor (head) injured his head during special teams drills Saturday, July 26. Head coach Rex Ryan said they don't know if Pryor suffered a concussion.

Jets | GM says no advantage in QB competition    Fri Jul 25, 09:19 PM

Neither QB Geno Smith nor QB Michael Vick has an advantage in the competition for the starting quarterback job, according to general manager John Idzik.

Footballguys view: The team might really want Smith to be the guy. The second-year pro is seen as a potential franchise quarterback, and he'll get every opportunity to hang onto the job. Vick has the experience edge, and he's great insurance for the team if Smith fails to impress.

Jets | Jason Babin moves around    Fri Jul 25, 09:12 PM

New York Jets DE Jason Babin lined up at left and right defensive end during practice Friday, July 25, and also dropped back into coverage. Babin is expected to be a situational pass rusher this upcoming season.

Jets | Geno Smith dominates first-team reps    Fri Jul 25, 12:32 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith logged three-quarters of the first-team practice reps for the second straight day on Friday, July 25.

Footballguys view: As expected, this is Smith's job to lose. We've got to see a lot more than puff comments from Rex Ryan and the team before we see him as anything more than a fantasy QB3. He has the tools around him now, so he should excel. If he doesn't the Jets might hook him quick and throw in Michael Vick, who could be an intriguing backup fantasy player if that happens.

Jets | Chris Ivory returns    Fri Jul 25, 10:05 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory (hamstring) returned to practice Friday, July 25.

Footballguys view: We'll see how long this lasts as Ivory's hamstring is more of an issue than Achilles' tendon was during the siege of Troy. In case that's too high-falutin' for you it means it's not good. Even if Ivory looks great in camp, his constant nagging injuries and the presence of Chris Johnson make him no more than an RB4 for fantasy owners.

Jets | Chris Johnson moving around    Fri Jul 25, 08:48 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson was put in motion and flexed out wide a lot in practice Thursday, July 24.

Footballguys view: Johnson could have a very good year, especially with the early reminder that Chris Ivory is a walking injury report (thanks hamstring!). We have CJ?K as a high end RB3 right now, but he has some upside, especially if Ivory is continually banged up.
