Jets | Coach hopeful Ryan Fitzpatrick is re-signed    Wed May 25, 02:29 PM

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles said he's 'hopeful' that QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is re-signed by training camp. However, Bowles didn't say he's confident.

Footballguys view: Things are getting back on track with the Jets and Fitzpatrick. The two sides were at an impasse earlier this year, but now the QB market has dried up and Fitzpatrick will likely lower his asking price in order to play with the Jets. If (when?) he's signed, Fitzpatrick should start and put up high-end QB2 numbers for fantasy owners.

Jets | Darrelle Revis could be back for camp    Wed May 25, 02:12 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) could be ready for the start of training camp. 'I can't answer that completely, but I hope he will,' head coach Todd Bowles said.

Footballguys view: The Jets are built to play strong defense, and Revis is a big reason why as he'll protect the back end. We'll see the team take it easy on him as he continues to recover. He'll be ready at some point during camp.

Jets | Sign Romar Morris    Tue May 24, 06:25 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Romar Morris (North Carolina) was signed by the New York Jets Tuesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: Morris tried out with the team earlier this year, and the Jets saw enough to sign him. The long-shot is a smaller back (185 pounds) and should work as a special-teams player and change-of-pace back if he makes the Jets final roster.

Jets | Jerome Cunningham cut    Tue May 24, 10:53 AM

New York Jets TE Jerome Cunningham was waived Tuesday, May 24.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick wants to return    Mon May 23, 01:27 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) wants to re-sign with the New York Jets. 'I would like to be back,' Fitzpatrick said. He's been in a three-month contract stalemate with the Jets.

Footballguys view: Things are at an impasse right now between Fitzpatrick and the Jets, but that could change quickly. Any other team with a QB need has already filled it, so Fitzpatrick has run out of options. He can either retire or sign a team-friendly deal with the Jets. At this point, it sounds like he doesn't want to retire so a return to the Jets makes the most sense.

Jets | Unsigned Darron Lee to practice    Mon May 23, 09:09 AM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee has yet to sign his rookie contract, but he is expected to take part in practices.

Footballguys view: The first-round pick is slotted to sign a four-year deal for $10.2 million, including a $5.6 million signing bonus. All first-round picks have fifth-year options in their deals.

Jets | NY has high hopes for Hackenberg    Fri May 20, 02:07 PM

New York Jets director of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger said the Jets have high hopes for QB Christian Hackenberg, their second-round draft pick. Heimerdinger also said the addition of Hackenberg doesn't reflect poorly on QB Bryce Petty.

Footballguys view: If the Jets do sign Ryan Fitzpatrick, one of Bryce Petty and Geno Smith will likely get released unless the team is ready to carry four quarterbacks. Even though this comment isn't supposed to reflect on Petty, it's hard to imagine the team turning to him as the backup, so this depth chart is far from settled.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick deadline soon?    Thu May 19, 04:31 PM

The deadline for free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) could be sooner than expected. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport posits that the first legitimate deadline is when the Jets' organized team activities start Tuesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: The Jets aren't budging, no matter how much some in the media feel they should. GM Mike Maccagnan and coach Todd Bowles seem willing to wait and have Fitzpatrick come down on his requests or roll with Geno Smith, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty. Unless some other team starts sniffing around Fitzpatrick, there's no urgency right now. Who will blink? We're thinking Fitzpatrick, unless there is an injury.

Jets | Teammate expects Ryan Fitzpatrick back    Tue May 17, 09:55 PM

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is not close to a contract agreement with the New York Jets, but Jets WR Eric Decker said he expects Fitzpatrick to be the starting quarterback in the first regular season game.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick is a seasoned veteran, so he doesn't need every offseason rep with the Jets as he already knows the Chan Gailey system like the back of his hand. The Jets drafted Christian Hackenberg (Penn State) in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft, but he's more of a developmental prospect who should sit for a year if possible. Geno Smith and Bryce Petty are the only other QBs on the roster. The Jets are at a stalemate right now with Fitzpatrick, but that could quickly change as we get closer to training camp.

Jets | Eric Decker talks Ryan Fitzpatrick    Tue May 17, 07:58 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker said the Jets need to be prepared to play without free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets). Decker does want New York to re-sign the veteran quarterback, but he's focused on the football team as a whole. 'All I can say is we have to move on without him right now because they are stuck where they are with the business decision,' Decker said. 'But, again, we have a job to do and that's to be the best football team, field the best football team, of who we have in the locker room right now.'

Footballguys view: The Jets WRs liked catching passes from Fitzpatrick because he has no fear throwing into coverage. The two sides are at an impasse right now, but that might change quickly as training camp draws near.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson not close to deal    Tue May 17, 11:10 AM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson isn't close to a new contract and hasn't signed his franchise tender. He may not report until training camp in July.

Footballguys view: The two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term contract. Wilkerson wants security for years, but the Jets only seem willing to pay him for one year. We could see Wilkerson play under the franchise tag this year, then move on in free agency in 2017.

Jets | OC likes Christian Hackenberg    Mon May 16, 10:26 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg has a great deal of potential and has good arm strength and intelligence, according to offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Gailey said he is not worried that Hackenberg struggled in his last two college seasons.

Footballguys view: Gailey is a known "quarterback whisperer" but Hackenberg may not give him enough to work with. The rookie is tall, sees the field well and has a strong arm. However, he regularly makes poor decisions under pressure and is wildly inaccurate. At Penn State, Hackenberg had a 51.5 percent adjusted completion total (throws beyond line of scrimmage). He's a project to be sure, and Hackenberg may not be the franchise QB the Jets are hoping for.

Jets | Matt Forte not ready to slow down    Sun May 15, 11:44 PM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte said he wants break the older running back stereotype, and his goal is to rush for 1,000 yards and catch as many passes as the offense allows.

Footballguys view: The Jets offense is going to have questionable QB play--even if Ryan Fitzpatrick returns to the team. They should feature Forte as the centerpiece of the offense. Jets OC Chan Gailey should be able to find the best ways to use Forte as a runner and receiver. We see Forte as at least a low-end RB1 with his new team.

Jets | Jordan Jenkins inks rookie deal    Fri May 13, 12:09 PM

New York Jets LB Jordan Jenkins signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, May 13.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has high football intelligence and properly diagnoses plays as they unfold in front of him. He plays with great strength and has long arms to snare ball-carriers with ease.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg financials    Thu May 12, 07:58 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg's four-year rookie contract is worth $4.66 million.

Footballguys view: Hackenberg will have a chance to win the starting job, but we're not touching him if he does. His shell-shocked attitude behind the offensive line will take time to get rid of, if it ever happens at all. The Jets quarterback situation is shaky, though Geno Smith is a little intriguing given the success the very average Ryan Fitzpatrick had in Chan Gailey's offense and the weapons the Jets have on offense.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg inks rookie deal    Thu May 12, 03:14 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, May 12.

Footballguys view: Based on film study, Hackenberg is in no way ready to take over as the Jets starting quarterback, so the best case scenario is is to let him sit and help him get over the trauma of being destroyed the last two years behind shoddy offensive lines. Worst case scenario is the Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick never come to terms, Geno Smith continues to be Geno Smith and Hackenberg needs to play during what looks to be a brutal schedule. Maybe Hackenberg can be repaired and find a way to play at the level he did when Bill O'Brien coached him at Penn State, but we're dubious about that.

Jets | No urgency with Ryan Fitzpatrick     Tue May 10, 02:56 PM

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's (Jets) status remains in limbo with the New York Jets. Owner Woody Johnson said there's no urgency to re-sign Fitzpatrick at this point with training camp still two months away.

Footballguys view: The team is just staying patient right now. Fitzpatrick already knows the Chan Gailey system, so he doesn't need to be present for installation this offseason. Things seem distant between the two sides now, but that could change quickly as training camp gets closer.

Jets | Darron Lee to play in the nickel    Tue May 10, 01:11 AM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee will play immediately as the nickel linebacker, bringing much-needed speed to the team's sub packages.

Footballguys view: Jets fans may have wanted QB Paxton Lynch in the first round, but we love the pick of Lee. He can do whatever the team asks him to do and has superstar potential in the NFL. Head coach Todd Bowles will work to find creative ways to integrate Lee, a blitz-and-cover linebacker, into the scheme.

Jets | Adrien Robinson waived    Mon May 9, 12:57 PM

New York Jets TE Adrien Robinson was waived Monday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Super deep dynasty owners are pouring out a 40 oz. over this news. Robinson is another one in a long line of super-athletic TEs who don't develop at the pro level. After bouncing around from the Giants to the Jets, Robinson may find it difficult to latch on with another team.

Jets | Calvin Pace, Antonio Cromartie could return    Sun May 8, 05:51 PM

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has not ruled out the possibility of the team re-signing free-agent LB Calvin Pace and CB Antonio Cromartie at some point.

Footballguys view: Cromartie was released in February, and there's been no buzz about him connecting with another team. The Jets are more likely to bring Cromartie back to give them veteran depth in the secondary. They could also bring Pace back, but the Jets picked Darron Lee (Ohio State, 1st round) and Jordan Jenkins (Georgia, 3rd round) with premium picks in the 2016 NFL draft.

Jets | Coach happy with Christian Hackenberg    Fri May 6, 07:18 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg showed a strong arm during practice Friday, May 6, and head coach Todd Bowles was happy with how he performed during drills. Hackenberg went 5-for-9 with one sack during 11-on-11 drills but did throw a nice 50-yard completion during the drills. Bowles believes Hackenberg will be able to improve as a quarterback over time.

Footballguys view: Hackenberg's first task will be overtaking 2015 fourth-round pick Bryce Petty on the depth chart - that is unless Ryan Fitzpatrick signs, which would probably give Hackenberg a guaranteed roster spot over Petty as the #3 quarterback. If Fitzpatrick doesn't return, then Hackenberg could see the field by the end of the season, considering Geno Smith's history as a starter.

Jets | Devin Smith may not be ready    Thu May 5, 07:50 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (knee) may not be ready for the start of the regular season as he continues to recover from anterior cruciate ligament surgery.

Footballguys view: Smith had trouble staying healthy in college, and that injury bug followed him to the pros as a rookie last year. Even when healthy, Smith is a speed guy who drops way too many passes.

Jets | Wanted Laremy Tunsil    Tue May 3, 08:09 PM

Miami Dolphins OT Laremy Tunsil was being pursued by the New York Jets before the Dolphins selected him in the NFL draft.

Footballguys view: He could have gone off the board much earlier, but a video of Tunsil ripping a bong load with a gas mask on caused his stock to take a tumble. We appreciate that he's a "MacGuyver Smoker" but it wasn't great for the start of his professional career. Tunsil went to the Miami Dolphins with the 13th-overall pick. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said New York tried to move up to take Tunsil.

Jets | New York could keep four quarterbacks    Tue May 3, 07:15 PM

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg, and possibly free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) could all be on New York's roster when the 2016 regular season commences. General manager Mike Maccagnan said if it's in the best interest of the team then they will keep four quarterbacks. 'It's been done before,' Maccagnan said. 'To me, it's a position where you have to take some time to really invest, grow and develop players.'

Footballguys view: The Jets could have Fitzpatrick compete with Geno Smith for the starting job. They could then see if Petty could hold off Hackenberg for the third-string/developmental job. The loser of that battle could wind up on the team's practice squad. The talks with Fitzpatrick are at a standstill right now, but things could change quickly at any time.

Jets | General manager excited for Geno Smith    Tue May 3, 04:31 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith could start for the Jets in 2016 if free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is not re-signed. That prospect has general manager Mike Maccagnan excited. 'Right now, Geno has been a starter for us, and actually played quite well prior to getting hurt last year, and was doing a good job in the offseason,' Maccagnan said. 'So we're kind of excited to see what Geno can do, coming back. And we feel good about that.'

Footballguys view: Is Maccagnan serious here? Smith gets to work under noted quarterback whisperer Chan Gailey for another season, so there may be a little bit of hope for him yet. However, Smith needs to prove that he can consistently make good decisions as a passer under pressure. A broken jaw last year (caused by a former teammate) knocked Smith out of the lineup where Ryan Fitzpatrick was able to take over and thrive as the starter.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg may play in 2016    Mon May 2, 06:42 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg may receive a chance to play in 2016, but general manager Mike Maccagnan would prefer if Hackenberg sat out his rookie season and learned the offense.

Footballguys view: At this time, the rookie may be the team's best bet at QB. Hackenberg is a tall, strong-armed QB who sees the field well and has the arm to make all the throws in the NFL. However, he's struggled over two years at Penn State ever since Bill O'Brien left to coach the Texans. We'll see if noted quarterback whisperer Chan Gailey can get Hackenberg back on the right track.

Jets | Dee Milliner's injuries impacted option    Mon May 2, 05:48 PM

New York Jets CB Dee Milliner's fifth-year option was declined Monday, May 2, and general manager Mike Maccagnan said it was primarily based on Milliner's injury history. If Milliner plays well in 2016, though, Maccagnan said both sides can try to negotiate a contract following the season.

Jets | Dee Milliner's option declined    Mon May 2, 12:43 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets CB Dee Milliner did not have his fifth-year option picked up by the Jets Monday, May 2.

Footballguys view: It's a swing and a miss for the Jets with their pick of Milliner. He will become a free agent after the 2016 season. Milliner missed 27 of 48 games due to surgeries on his Achilles' and wrist.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson's option exercised    Mon May 2, 10:47 AM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 2.

Footballguys view: A great move for the Jets here. Richardson is one of the best at his position, and the fifth-year option pays him just over $8 million in 2017. The option is guaranteed for injury only.

Jets | Robby Anderson inks deal with Jets    Sun May 1, 09:42 AM

The New York Jets agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent WR Robby Anderson (Temple) on an undisclosed deal Sunday, May 1.

Footballguys view: Anderson was an interesting player to watch at the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year. He's tall but thin, but Anderson has shown the ability on film to gain separation and make plays at the highest point of the catch. He could stick around on the Jets practice squad if he continues to impress.

Jets | Geno Smith No. 1 QB for now    Sat Apr 30, 10:34 AM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback when offseason workouts begin, but the team is still looking to re-sign free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: There's a chance that another quarterback is brought in to hold the fort while Christian Hackenberg learns the system in which case we would not be shocked if Smith finds himself a free agent by the end of August. He hasn't been consistent enough to stick, though if the Jets don't bring in that veteran, he might get one more chance.

Jets | No talks between Jets, Ryan Fitzpatrick    Fri Apr 29, 09:32 PM

The last time free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets had any meaningful talks was 'weeks ago,' according to one source.

Footballguys view: As we thought. At this point, there's not going to be movement, as the Jets are firmly set in moving on. They certainly aren't going to add more to their offer.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg's footwork improving     Fri Apr 29, 09:22 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg's footwork was much better in private workouts after he worked with quarterback coach Jordan Palmer, according to sources.

Footballguys view: We'll see because it's when he faces live bodies that things go to pot. This is going to take a while and the Jets - as well as their fans - have to be patient.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg should sit first year    Fri Apr 29, 09:01 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg is expected to sit and grow in his first season in the NFL. If free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) is re-signed, it could very well only be a one-year deal, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: He's going to have to wait because he's absolutely not ready now. As for Fitzpatrick, he has a choice to either retire as threatened or take the only offer he's had in what the Jets put out there. He would be a great fill in for the year, but his pride might be in the way.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg to Jets    Fri Apr 29, 08:45 PM

The New York Jets selected Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg with the No. 51 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Someone check on Andrew Garda and Chase Stuart as they may be on a ledge somewhere. It might be a crowded ledge if Twitter is an indication. Hackenberg is scared of shadows after a pounding behind Penn State's inadequate line but the Jets must think they can fix that. He could sit behind Geno Smith or another veteran, but we don't expect it to be Ryan Fitzpatrick who just had his "retire or bust" buff called.

Jets | Darron Lee will see playing time    Fri Apr 29, 03:52 PM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee will receive playing time in the nickel defense in 2016, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Lee will be the backup to LB Erin Henderson at inside linebacker in the base defense.

Footballguys view: The Jets will find a lot of ways to use Lee, and take advantage of his speed and aggressiveness. They run a flexible, hybrid type defense, so we could see Lee in any number of places depending on situation.

Link to story

Jets | Darron Lee to be inside linebacker    Fri Apr 29, 12:04 PM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee is expected to start at inside linebacker alongside LB David Harris when he's ready.

Footballguys view: He's a bit small for that, but we don't expect him to be clogging the middle. They're going to use his speed and athleticism all over the place. With defenses running hybrid as they do these days, your starting position may not be the same position you're playing the other 60 snaps in a game.

Jets | Darron Lee doesn't need to bulk up    Thu Apr 28, 10:51 PM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee's speed is what the team was looking for, and he doesn't need to add any weight to his 232-pound frame, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: The Jets like his speed and flexibility. He's likely a replacement for David Harris as he is near the end of his career. The Jets like his versatility and with the way defense is played these days, the size isn't a big deal.

Jets | New York selects Darron Lee    Thu Apr 28, 10:25 PM

The New York Jets selected Ohio State LB Darron Lee with the 20th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: A quick, sideline-to-sideline linebacker who can play three downs. The Jets don't want him to add muscle, so we'll have to see how Todd Bowles makes up for a lack of size.

Jets | New York GM likes Hackenberg    Thu Apr 28, 07:50 PM

Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg has drawn the admiration of New York general manager Mike Maccagnan. The Jets aren't likely to take Hackenberg with their first-round pick, but he could be an option for them in the second round.

Footballguys view: The Jets will consider sitting him a year, improving the offensive line and leaning on the running game. It will take Hackenberg a year or so, but the danger is that he has been broken by bad offensive line play for two years. The Jets seem to be thinking defense in the first though, so Hackenberg could be aan option on day two.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick may not play     Thu Apr 28, 04:30 PM

Free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Jets) has told people he would rather not play football this season than play for the New York Jets under their latest contract offer.

Footballguys view: Well he'd better get his Lazy-Boy ready because nobody else has come knocking. Fitzpatrick has seen no interest even from the QB-desperate Broncos. We think the Jets might raise their offer from the reported $7 million to maybe $10, but it's clear Fitzpatrick wants more since nobody else is biting. The Jets seem Ok moving on without him, relying on a good defense, a solid run game and two very nice wide receivers.

Jets | Kamalei Correa has Jets interest    Wed Apr 27, 01:54 PM

Boise State LB Kamalei Correa is a player drawing the interest of the New York Jets as an edge rusher, but New York may have to wait until the second round of the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Correa could get pushed up the board this year because of the shortage of edge rushing prospects with upside. He wasn't that productive at Boise State, but there is more to unlock with development in the pros.

Jets | Gang Green cool on Paxton Lynch    Wed Apr 27, 01:48 PM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch's interest from the New York Jets has cooled, according to sources. Lynch reportedly scored an 18 on the Worderlic test, and there are concerns about his maturity and ability to handle the cerebral nature of the position. The Jets are likely to pass on him at No. 20.

Footballguys view: Lynch has a chance to move up the board because the top two quarterbacks will go 1-2, but if he gets past Cleveland at 8 and Buffalo at 19, the Jets being out might see Lynch fall all the way to Denver at 31 - that is if a team doesn't trade back into the first round for him. Of course, everything we hear this close to the draft should be taken with a grain of salt.

Jets | New York targeting WR?    Wed Apr 27, 12:46 PM

The New York Jets could be targeting a wide receiver with their first-round pick, according to sources. Texas Christian WR Josh Doctson and Notre Dame WR Will Fuller are names to watch.

Footballguys view: Brandon Marshall is in the autumn of his career despite a huge 2015, and 2015 second-round pick Devin Smith tore his ACL last year. Fuller and Doctson are downfield threats who could make this pass offense even more dangerous as long as Ryan Fitzpatrick is brought back.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson trade unlikely    Wed Apr 27, 12:39 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson is unlikely to be traded after the team fielded calls and experienced little action.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson is an elite defensive lineman who can play multiple spots along the defensive line. While he'll have to be paid to market value for his services, it's hard to believe teams expect more from a first round pick, even at a discount. This could be to the Jets gain in the long run.
