Jets | NYJ to interview Eric Studesville    Thu Jan 12, 03:11 PM

Denver Broncos running backs coach Eric Studesville will interview for the New York Jets offensive coordinator position, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Studesville may be on his way out in Denver even though he has one year left on his contract. He was the interim coach for the Broncos in 2010 after Josh McDaniels was fired. Since then, Studesville has worked to build a strong Broncos rushing attack. That hasn't worked out as planned with injuries and inconsistencies plaguing the Denver ground game.

Jets | Geno Smith unlikely to return    Sun Jan 8, 01:09 AM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith (knee) is unlikely to be back with the club in 2017, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: No surprises here. The Jets have a mess at quarterback, and don't be surprised if they go back to the well in the 2017 NFL draft to find a passer. Smith is recovering from ACL surgery performed last November, and the team is expected to try and resolve the quarterback position during the spring, long before Smith is fully recovered.

Jets | Owner doesn't commit to Darrelle Revis    Thu Jan 5, 08:53 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis' future with the team hasn't been decided, and it will by left up to the personnel people, according to owner Woody Johnson.

Footballguys view: Revis needs to re-work his deal if he wants to stay with the Jets. He'll likely have to move to safety as well.

Jets | Harsh criticism for Christian Hackenberg     Thu Jan 5, 08:46 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg will 'never make it' in the NFL, according to a team source, and another source said Hackenberg couldn't throw the ball into an ocean.

Footballguys view: Hackenberg is certainly a multi-year project for the Jets. They passed on guys like Paxton Lynch (Broncos) and Dak Prescott (Cowboys) to select Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft. We'll see if he can make a massive overhaul on his skill set before the start of 2017 training camp. Let's just say we're not betting on it.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg makes progress    Thu Jan 5, 12:14 PM

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said QB Christian Hackenberg made progress during his rookie season but would not say if Hackenberg will compete for the starting for the starting job next season.

Footballguys view: He also called him a prospect, which is not what anyone wants to hear a year into his development. The downside to having four quarterbacks was that one of them - the rookie - was getting absolutely no practice time. So we know Hackenberg will continue to have a lot of work to do.

Jets | Chan Gailey calls it a career    Tue Jan 3, 02:02 PM

New York Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey announced his retirement Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Footballguys view: Gailey tried to do his best with the Jets, but things weren't working for the offense this year. We'll always remember him as a versatile and innovative coach who worked well with the talent around him...even if it wasn't the best talent. At 65 years old, Gailey may get some interest from teams in need of offensive help.

Jets | NYJ fires four assistants    Tue Jan 3, 01:53 PM

Jets | Brandon Marshall open to pay cut    Mon Jan 2, 06:16 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall is set to make $7.5 million next season, but none of that money is guaranteed. The Jets can save the money by cutting Marshall, but the receiver is willing to take a pay cut. 'It's not about the money anymore,' Marshall said. 'It's all about winning.'

Footballguys view: The Jets don't have a quarterback to make them a threat to run at the postseason. Perhaps if they make a move for a Tony Romo (or something like that), then we'll change our view about their potential. They're not winning many games if Christian Hackenberg actually gets to step onto the field in 2017.

Jets | Bilal Powell may see bigger role    Mon Jan 2, 06:12 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell may receive a bigger role in 2017 after he played well over the last month of the season, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: That would be a good idea for the Jets as Matt Forte is not the same player he used to be. Powell rushed for 411 yards over the last four games of the season, which was third most in the league during that span.

Jets | Matt Forte undergoes knee surgery    Mon Jan 2, 01:46 PM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (knee) underwent surgery for a torn meniscus Friday, Dec. 30, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Forte was only able to make it through 14 games this year. In 2016, Forte had a career-low 813 rushing yards and a career-low 30 catches and a career low 263 receiving yards. Needless to say, his first year with the Jets wasn't a banner season.

Jets | Breno Giacomini to have back surgery    Mon Jan 2, 12:18 PM

New York Jets OT Breno Giacomini (back) will undergo surgery Wednesday, Jan. 4, to shave down a herniated disc and is expected to need four months to recover.

Jets | Darrelle Revis open to playing safety    Mon Jan 2, 11:05 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis said he's open to moving to safety next season if it helps the team.

Footballguys view: He's only 31 years old, but Revis is not the player he used to be. Moving to safety makes a ton of sense, but keeping him around with a $15 million cap number is not wise for the Jets. If the two sides can restructure his deal, then Revis could stay with the team and likely switch positions.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick finishes on high note    Mon Jan 2, 12:42 AM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick completed 20 of his 30 pass attempts for 210 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 17 game against the Buffalo Bills in what is expected to be his final game with the team.

Jets | Todd Bowles, GM to return in 2017    Mon Jan 2, 12:41 AM

The New York Jets announced head coach Todd Bowles will be retained for the 2017 season. General manager Dave Maccagnan will also be back in 2017.

Footballguys view: Bowles had his ups and downs in his second year with the team. They need to find a new leader on offense as going back to Ryan Fitzpatrick didn't work in 2016. Christian Hackenberg was so bad that he couldn't see the field as a rookie, and Bryce Petty turned out to be...well, the player many thought he would be. The defense needs some help in the secondary, and Maccagnan's work will be mostly done at those two spots.

Jets | Bilal Powell has terrific performance    Sun Jan 1, 06:03 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell rushed for 122 yards on 22 carries against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17. He also caught three passes for 15 yards and one touchdown during the game.

Footballguys view: Powell made a bid to be the Jets starting running back next season with his strong performance after Matt Forte went out. His dynasty stock is on the rise as the Jets should re-think the split they had coming into the season in any event.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick throws two TDs    Sun Jan 1, 06:00 PM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick went 20-for-30 for 210 yards and two touchdowns against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick won't be with the Jets next year, but he could get a job as a backup elsewhere if he still wants to play. The offseason drama with his contract status ended up being a cliffhanger with a blooper reel as the reveal. The Jets will be looking at quarterbacks in the draft and free agency despite spending a second and fourth round pick on prospects over the last two years.

The New York Jets have declared TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, WR Brandon Marshall, OT Donald Hawkins, LB Lorenzo Mauldin, CB Nick Marshall, LB Randell Johnson, DL Steve McLendon inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Marshall has been a non-factor for a fantasy for well over a month now. Young receivers like Charone Peake and Devin Smith will get more time in place of the veteran.

Jets | Darrelle Revis lobbying to stay?    Sat Dec 31, 12:15 AM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis said he wants to return to the team in 2017 and eventually retire as a Jet. 'Do the New York Jets want to treat my situation with class or no class?' 'With me being one of the best players in the history of this franchise, do they want me to retire here or not retire here?'

Footballguys view: Revis is no longer the player he used to be, and he's on the books through the 2019 season. With a cap hit of $15.3 million in 2017 (with $6 million in dead money) his return seems unlikely without a restructured deal.

Jets | Matt Forte will not play in season finale    Fri Dec 30, 02:10 PM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte (knee, shoulder) has been ruled out for Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills.

Footballguys view: The week of practice has been leading up to this decision, so we're not surprised. Forte finishes his first season with the Jets banged up. He started off strong but faded at the end of the year. In 2016, Forte had a career-low 813 rushing yards in 14 games. His eight touchdowns combined helped him finish as a top-20 fantasy back in standard leagues.
