Jets | To be fined in Darrelle Revis tampering case    Tue Apr 28, 12:39 PM

The New York Jets will be fined $100,000 for the tampering case involving CB Darrelle Revis.

Footballguys view: There's no draft pick being taken away from the Jets. At the end of the day, this is a small penalty for a team that was willing to get Revis at any cost.

Jets | NYJ would pass on Marcus Mariota?    Tue Apr 28, 01:12 AM

If the New York Jets had a shot at Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft the latest buzz in league circles is that they would pass on the quarterback.

Footballguys view: Just last week, the buzz was the Jets wanted to move up for Mariota. Now, they'll pass on him? We think they'd pass on him as that was the buzz earlier in the draft process. There's a lot of BS that is floated around in the month of April.

Jets | Benardrick McKinney could be option    Sun Apr 26, 10:24 AM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney could be an option for the New York Jets if he is available when they draft in the second round.

Footballguys view: McKinney is a two-down thumper who arrives at the ball with natural violence. He has good length for the position, and he can close on the ball-carrier quickly. McKinney does struggle in coverage, and he'll likely have to come off the field on passing downs at the pro level.

Jets | Meet with several OT prospects    Sat Apr 25, 09:24 AM

Miami (Fla.) OT Ereck Flowers, Stanford OT Andrus Peat and Pittsburgh OT T.J. Clemmings met with the New York Jets this offseason.

Footballguys view: Peat may be the best left tackle prospect in the draft. He's smart, athletic and has surprising quickness off the snap. Flowers is a right tackle in the pros, and he'll be an option for zone-blocking teams. Clemmings, a former defensive end for PITT, may have the highest upside of any right tackle in this draft but he's going to have to play with better technique as a pro.

Jets | Jaiquawn Jarrett signs tender    Fri Apr 24, 04:41 PM

New York Jets restricted free-agent SS Jaiquawn Jarrett signed his tender offer Friday, April 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jarrett was decent in pass coverage but a liability against the run. Depending on how Calvin Pryor does in his second season, as well as how the Jets' rebooted secondary looks, he may only be depth.

Jets | New York hosts Marcus Mariota    Thu Apr 23, 05:25 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota visited the New York Jets April 4. Mariota worked out for the Jets five days prior to that meeting as well.

Footballguys view: There is word the Jets may try to move up to acquire Mariota. They selected Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, but they may feel he's not the long-term answer at quarterback. Mariota is athletic and a hard worker, but as a passer he needs polish. He worked out of the shotgun exclusively at Oregon, and he rarely was asked to make stick throws into tight coverage.

Jets | Jameis Winston not visiting Jets    Wed Apr 22, 09:40 AM

Updating a previous report, Florida State QB Jameis Winston's workout with the New York Jets has been canceled.

Footballguys view: Unlike Mariota, the drumbeat on Winston has been steady and almost unanimous. He's going #1 to the Bucs.

Jets | Breshad Perriman visits    Tue Apr 21, 07:31 AM

UCF WR Breshad Perriman visited the New York Giants on Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Perriman could be a WR1 at the pro level, but he has to work on some things before he's at that point. He's got a great blend of size/athleticism, and Perriman can explode into his route at the line of scrimmage. His technique as a route-runner is extremely raw, and Perriman needs to work on his focus when the ball is coming in to reduce the number of drops or body catches. He should be a second-round pick in the draft.

Jets | Bud Dupree could be option    Sat Apr 18, 09:16 AM

Kentucky DE/LB Bud Dupree could be an option for the New York Jets in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, because he has the size to fit head coach Todd Bowles' defensive scheme.

Footballguys view: Dupree is a freakish athlete who has drawn comparisons to Jamie Collins (Patriots) in the scouting community. He has the burst to get after the quarterback, and he's smooth enough to cover in open space. Look for Dupree to come off the board in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Jets | Will meet with Leonard Williams    Thu Apr 16, 02:47 PM

Southern California DE Leonard Williams is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: The Jets have a lot of d-line talent, but lack a pure pass rusher. Williams could be that guy in their defense, and if they don't go quarterback and Williams is on the board, he is a smart choice.

Link to story

Jets | Jameis Winston may not visit Jets    Tue Apr 14, 03:13 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston may not visit the New York Jets after all due to a scheduling conflict.

Footballguys view: We would be shocked if Winston is around when the Jets pick at sixth overall. We would also be surprised if the Jets surrendered enough to move up to the first-overall pick. Winston should be the top pick and the quarterback of the future for the Buccaneers.

Jets | Marcus Mariota an option for Jets?    Mon Apr 13, 05:12 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be a target of the New York Jets as the NFL Draft approaches. New York is one team that could trade up with the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 overall pick.

Footballguys view: The Jets have the sixth-overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, and they could be in the market for a franchise quarterback. Mariota comes with a lot of question marks on the field, but they may feel he's worth starting over Geno Smith. Mariota has been generating a ton of buzz lately, but we'll see if it's only pre-draft hype at the end of this month.

Jets | Joe Mays signs    Mon Apr 13, 04:28 PM

Free-agent LB Joe Mays (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Mays is a two-down thumper who is shot out of a cannon as a run defender. He's a liability in coverage, and there are times when he misreads the play and gets out of position as a tackler.

Jets | Dante Fowler visiting    Mon Apr 13, 01:49 PM

Florida DE/LB Dante Fowler is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets Monday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Fowler is one of our favorite players in this draft class. He bounced all over the field at Florida, and he played at several different weights when he changed positions. He's still somewhat raw as a pass-rusher, but the tools are there for him to become a dominant player in the NFL. We could see Fowler come off the board in the top 10 of the 2015 NFL draft.

Jets | Stevan Ridley should be ready for camp    Sun Apr 12, 09:42 AM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) should be ready for the start of training camp if he does not suffer any setbacks, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Okay, this is a longer period than originally thought. Ridley was supposed to be cleared for action in May, and now it sounds like he's good to go for August. Ah well, his absence will give the other backs (Bilal Powell, Daryl Richardson) behind him on the roster more time.

Jets | Interest in Marcus Peters    Sun Apr 12, 07:37 AM

Washington CB Marcus Peters has drawn pre-draft interest from the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: The Jets could use a talented cornerback like Peters to groom behind Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. Peters is incredibly talented, but he was kicked off Washington's team after multiple problems with the coaching staff. If he grows up, Peters has the talent to be a shutdown corner in the NFL. Even with his character concerns, we should see Peters taken in the first round of the draft.

Jets | Bryce Petty to visit    Sun Apr 12, 07:01 AM

Baylor QB Bryce Petty will visit the New York Jets early next week, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: The Jets have interest in adding a quarterback at some point in the 2015 NFL draft. Petty has arguably the best arm talent of any player in this draft, but he has a ton of things to work on in order to be a quality pro quarterback. First, he needs to learn how to take a snap after working exclusively out of the shotgun at Baylor. Second, Petty needs to learn how to read a defense after working in an offense where he primarily threw to wide open receivers. Finally, he needs mechanical work. As you can see, Petty is a large project.

Jets | Jameis Winston to meet with NYJ    Sat Apr 11, 06:12 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets, according to sources. The Jets were scheduled to put Winston through a private workout, but they canceled it after watching his pro day.

Footballguys view: Awesome, we (and everyone else) would be floored if Winston fell to sixth overall in the draft. We'd also be almost equally surprised if the Jets moved up to the number one pick.

Jets | Eli Harold to visit    Sat Apr 11, 10:10 AM

Virginia LB Eli Harold is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Harold is an aggressive edge-rusher who reminds some in the scouting community of Ezekial Ansah (Lions). He's not much of a run-defender, but he will get after the quarterback with elite burst and a non-stop motor.

Jets | Kevin White to meet with NYJ    Thu Apr 9, 02:59 PM

West Virginia WR Kevin White said he is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets before the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: If Marcus Mariota is not there at No. 6, the Jets might reach towards some more receiving talent. White has great upside and Brandon Marshall is certainly on the downward slope of his career. It could be smart to look beyond Marshall, although a pass-rusher or offensive line talent are higher immediate priorities.

Jets | Brett Hundley worked out    Thu Apr 9, 02:02 PM

UCLA QB Brett Hundley recently worked out for the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: If they miss out on Marcus Mariota and Jameis Winston, the Jets will continue to look at quarterbacks throughout the draft. The drop off from the first two down to everyone else is sizable though and Hundley has a lot of issues, not the least of which is his struggles to read defenses. He threw a ton of short passes at UCLA and his internal clock seems to be really slow. The Jets (or any team) should not consider him an immediate starter in the NFL.

Jets | Stevan Ridley signs with Jets    Thu Apr 9, 09:24 AM

Free-agent RB Stevan Ridley agreed to a one-year deal with the New York Jets Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see how they pair him with Chris Ivory. You'd think, given how they wanted to use Chris Johnson as a pass-catcher, that they would want a pass-catching back next to Ivory, but that's not Ridley, who is very similar to Ivory. Coming off an ACL injury, it's no sure thing Ridley will be back to normal, but if he is, this will eat into both his and Ivory's value as they do the same thing and could split carries.

Jets | Stevan Ridley signed one-year deal    Wed Apr 8, 07:38 PM

Updating a previous story, New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley signed a one-year deal with the team.

Footballguys view: Ridley won't be cleared from his knee injury until May. The Jets decided to add Ridley even though he's not at full strength. Chris Ivory is the team's lead back, but Ridley will compete with Bilal Powell for the primary backup job in 2015.

Jets | Leger Douzable re-signing    Wed Apr 8, 02:26 PM

Free-agent DE Leger Douzable (Jets) is re-signing an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: The Jets are strong up front on the defensive line. Douzable is just a backup-level player, but a valuable one due to his experience and skill set.

Jets | Joe Mays interests Jets    Wed Apr 8, 11:43 AM

Free-agent LB Joe Mays (Chiefs) is of interest to the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mays is a two-down thumper who is shot out of a cannon against the run. He can't cover, but can be an intimidating presence on rushing downs.

Jets | Marcus Gilchrist nursing shoulder injury    Tue Apr 7, 11:20 PM

New York Jets FS Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder) is dealing with a shoulder injury which will prevent him from fully participating in the team's offseason program, according to a source. He will not be a full go until training camp.

Footballguys view: Gilchrist will get plenty of time to heal up before the start of camp. Even then, we'd expect the Jets to ease him back into action.

Jets | Erin Henderson agrees to terms    Tue Apr 7, 05:11 PM

Free-agent LB Erin Henderson (Vikings) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Tuesday, April 7, according to a source. Henderson didn't play last year after he was cut by the Vikings after two arrests for drunk driving in a span of three months. Henderson completed a 30-day drug and alcohol rehab program last year.

Footballguys view: It's been more than a year since Henderson played in the NFL. His career with the Vikings was cut short by substance-abuse problems. Now that he's sober, Henderson is looking to his second chance with the Jets.

Jets | Geno Smith not changing mechanics    Mon Apr 6, 05:02 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith flew to the west coast to work with throwing coach Tom House, but Smith said he didn't change his mechanics at all. 'I didn't change anything. It's not a thing where I needed to change anything. It was basically, just go out there, work out and get better,' Smith said.

Footballguys view: We're going to temper our expectations for Smith this season. However, we do love that Chan Gailey is his offensive coordinator. Gailey will know how to craft an offense built around Smith's strength as a passer and a runner.

Jets | Geno Smith has money at stake    Mon Apr 6, 02:50 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has a lot at stake this offseason as far as money is concerned.

Footballguys view: About 32 percent of Smith's compensation this year is tied to offseason attendance. Smith must participate in around 80 percent of offseason workouts or he could miss out on approximately $276,328.

Jets | Geno Smith working with new WR    Mon Apr 6, 01:13 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he has been working with WR Brandon Marshall in order to start building chemistry with him. Smith has also worked with throwing coach Tom House in California this offseason.

Footballguys view: Smith finished the season with a strong game against the Dolphins in Week 17. his 358-yard, three-touchdown performance might be a sign of things to come. We like hearing about him working on his skill set with House, and getting reps/timing/chemistry down with Marshall is also a positive sign.

Jets | Jeremy Kerley could see more time    Sat Apr 4, 10:30 AM

New York Jets WR Jeremy Kerley could receive more playing time in 2015 than he did this past season, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan. 'In particular, I do like Kerley a little bit,' Maccagnan said. 'I've kind of scouted him coming out of college a while ago. I'm kind of excited to see him get a few more reps than he got last year in terms of his playing time.'

Footballguys view: Kerley had about half the receptions that Eric Decker did last year (38 to 74). However, Kerley ran almost the same amount of routes as Decker (394 for Kerley, 423 for Decker). He was targeted 71 times last year, and that number may slightly increase this season. We're still not buying into Kerley's stock in redraft leagues.

Jets | Stevan Ridley leaves NY without deal    Fri Apr 3, 06:59 PM

Free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (Patriots) left his meeting with the New York Jets without a contract, according to sources. Ridley is scheduled to meet with at least one more team next week, but the feeling is he will sign with the Jets or the Miami Dolphins.

Footballguys view: Ridley still isn't 100 percent healthy. His knee injury is supposed to be cleared by May. Teams may wait until then to sign the veteran back. With this incredible draft class at RB, he may need to wait longer than that.

Jets | NYJ open to moving up in draft for QB    Thu Apr 2, 02:53 PM

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan indicated the team would be willing to trade up in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft for a quarterback, which has fueled speculation that the team may have interest in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Footballguys view: THIS JUST IN: BIRDS CAN FLY AND PUPPIES ARE FUZZY Of course they are looking to move up! The pickings were slim in free agency and nobody is sold on Geno Smith (or Ryan Fitzpatrick long-term), especially the new coaching and front office staff. We assume, like Cimini, that the interest is in Mariota though we would not rule out Jameis Winston if he was available.

Link to story

Jets | Amari Cooper meeting with NYJ    Thu Apr 2, 01:02 PM

Alabama WR Amari Cooper is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets Thursday, April 2.

Footballguys view: The Jets are definitely in position to have a shot at Cooper, widely looked at as one of the--if not THE--top wide receiver prospects in the 2015 NFL Draft. Cooper runs excellent routes and has tremendous body control, which allows him to fake one way and move the other without losing acceleration or speed, and leaves defenders spinning as they look for him. He's also fearless when running routes across the middle as well. While the Jets have Eric Decker and Brandon Marshall already at the position, Marshall is aging and Decker is limited to a No. 2 role. Having Cooper would be a good look for a Jets team that has to look to the future as well as the present.

Jets | Re-sign Ben Ijalana    Wed Apr 1, 05:42 PM

New York Jets OT Ben Ijalana re-signed to an undisclosed deal Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: Just a depth move here. Ijalana was active for five games in 2014, but he played a whopping total of five snaps. The former second-round pick of the Colts (2011) lasted just a few years in Indianapolis before he was placed on waivers and later claimed by the Jets.

Jets | Sign Jamari Lattimore    Wed Apr 1, 04:56 PM

Free-agent LB Jamari Lattimore (Packers) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, April 1, according to his agent.

Jets | NY attends Jameis Winston pro day    Tue Mar 31, 04:46 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston was watched by a heavy contingent from the New York Jets at his pro day Tuesday, March 31. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan, head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey were all in attendance Tuesday. Winston received mostly positive reviews from his workout, and he's expected to be off the board when the Jets pick in the first round. Winston left no doubt that he has a stronger arm than Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Footballguys view: The Jets would likely jump at the chance to select Winston, but he'll be off the board before they pick at sixth overall. We think the Buccaneers have locked in on Winston as their top target.

Jets | Matt Schaub drawing interest from Jets    Mon Mar 30, 11:23 PM

Free-agent QB Matt Schaub (Raiders) is drawing interest from the New York Jets, as well as the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens. According to a source, Schaub is expected to sign this week.

Footballguys view: Just what the Jets need, another quarterback who is not a good option as a starter. Schaub could be a nice backup somewhere, but with the Jets he might have a chance to start. Currently, Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick will compete for that right in 2015. The Jets might also have interest in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota in the 2015 NFL draft.

Jets | Erin Henderson to visit    Sun Mar 29, 06:53 PM

Free-agent LB Erin Henderson (Vikings) is scheduled to visit the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Henderson has two drunk driving arrests, and that could be giving teams pause when considering him as an offseason addition. If signed, Henderson would give the Jets veteran depth at the linebacker position.

Jets | Marcus Mariota in the mix for Jets?    Thu Mar 26, 05:58 PM

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota would be hard for the New York Jets to pass on if he were still available at the sixth overall pick, according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Mariota even makes it that far down the draft board. The Titans have interest with the second-overall pick, and there are a few teams behind the Jets that would like to trade up to get the Oregon passer.

Jets | Interested in Jason Trusnik    Wed Mar 25, 02:12 PM

Free-agent LB Jason Trusnik (Dolphins) is attracting interest from the New York Jets.

Jets | Kellen Davis signed    Wed Mar 25, 12:06 PM

Free-agent TE Kellen Davis (Lions) signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, March 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Jets | HC confident in Brandon Marshall    Tue Mar 24, 01:40 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall could be in line for a breakout season in 2015, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said he thinks Marshall remains a 'top-flight receiver.' 'He understands the game. He's a student of the game. He understands when he has small guys on him. He can get vertical when he needs to get vertical. He's a sharp route runner. He has great hands. He knows how to block. He brings a work ethic and he brings a fire to us that we need on the other side of the ball,' Bowles said.

Footballguys view: We'll see how Marshall fits in with the Jets. Either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith will be the team's starter (unless they draft Marcus Mariota), and that doesn't give us a ton of confidence in the passing game. Marshall should be considered a low-end WR2 with upside for fantasy owners.

Jets | Stephen Bowen signing    Tue Mar 24, 01:23 PM

Jets | Geno Smith to enter camp as starter    Tue Mar 24, 01:19 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback ahead of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick entering training camp this summer, according to new head coach Todd Bowles. 'You can't have equal first-team reps with a quarterback,' Bowles said. 'Geno will start out taking them, but that doesn't mean that Ryan can't take his spot. If Ryan's playing better and performing better...' Bowles continues to say that it's too early to judge Smith off his tape alone.

Footballguys view: Smith ended the season on a hot streak with a big game against the Dolphins in Week 17. New Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey should be able to craft an offense that works towards Smith's strengths as a passer.

Jets | Marcus Mariota needs to develop    Mon Mar 23, 04:16 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota had an impressive college career, but he is behind New York Jets QB Geno Smith in his development by a significant margin, according to owner Woody Johnson.

Footballguys view: Mariota threw to largely wide open receivers in college at Oregon. He worked out of the shotgun, and Mariota rarely had to read defenses. Instead, he would throw to predetermined spots. He's a larger project than some think, and his upside is that of Alex Smith (Chiefs) in our eyes.
