Jets | Josh McCown calls it a career    Mon Jun 17, 02:01 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown announced his retirement via The Players' Tribune on Monday, June 17.

Footballguys view: McCown had a 17-year football career and now finds his way to the TV studio as an analyst for ESPN. Largely a backup or bridge quarterback during his pro career, McCown was a solid player no matter where he went in 10 different NFL stops (and one year with the Hartford Colonials in the UFL).

Jets | Robby Anderson impresses    Mon Jun 17, 11:46 AM

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson was deemed a 'very pleasant surprise' by new general manager Joe Douglas. 'He's a tough weapon for defenses to match up with, he can get behind you and he can challenge the defense vertically,' Douglas said. 'That was a very pleasant surprise.'

Footballguys view: Over the last month of the 2018 season, Anderson performed at a high level. We'll see if he can carry that over to this season. New head coach Adam Gase should have plenty of ways to use Anderson as a favorite target of second-year QB Sam Darnold. Anderson has a current ADP of WR30 (6.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Chris Herndon facing two-game ban?    Fri Jun 14, 03:51 PM

New York Jets TE Chris Herndon is reportedly 'facing the likelihood' of a two-game suspension for pleading guilty in January to driving while intoxicated, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: This makes Herndon tough to draft in short bench leagues because he'll clog up a valuable roster spot for the first two waiver wire runs. He's still draftable in deep bench and tight end premium leagues, although his absence could open a crack in the door for fourth round pick Trevon Wesco.

Jets | Daniel Brown impressing    Fri Jun 14, 10:27 AM

New York Jets TE Daniel Brown, normally a blocking tight end, has impressed with his ability as a receiver. Brown has displayed more downfield speed than expected.

Footballguys view: The Jets could employ a lot of two-tight end sets this year. Fourth-round pick Trevon Wesco can be employed in numerous ways, and Chris Herndon had a promising rookie year. Brown could make the team if Herndon is suspended for the first two games after pleading guilty to DWI this offseason.

Jets | Robby Anderson still sidelined    Thu Jun 13, 09:10 PM

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson (undisclosed) did not practice Thursday, June 13, because of an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: We'll be watching this as Anderson looked like a #1 in the making with Sam Darnold last year, but has to start over with a new coaching staff in a contract year. He could vastly outproduce his modest ADP.

Jets | Sam Darnold impressing in Year 2    Thu Jun 13, 01:51 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold has impressed Jets wide receivers coach Shawn Jefferson in his second season. 'It's everything,' Jefferson said of Darnold. 'The way that he works -- he's here early in the morning, he stays after, he probably doesn't leave this building until six, seven at night. He's in the old quarterback room. I've been so impressed with this kids work ethic and the way he attacks everything. It's just been awesome to see a young kid like that. It's almost like he's been here before. He's a young guy, but he has a lot of veteran attributes to him.'

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see what kind of steps Darnold can take in year two...now with the guidance of head coach Adam Gase. Having better weapons around Darnold (like RB Le'Veon Bell) should greatly help. Darnold is a low-end QB2 for Fantasy GMs in 2019.

  Jets | Robby Anderson a non-participant    Tue Jun 11, 12:39 PM

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson (undetermined) is present at the team's minicamp practice Tuesday, June 11 but is not participating in team drills.

Footballguys view: Anderson wants to have a bounce-back year in 2019 after struggling with injuries and a rookie quarterback in 2018. Signed to a one-year, $3.1 million contract earlier this year Anderson has a current ADP of WR30 (7.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Sam Darnold happy to have Bilal Powell back    Sun Jun 9, 04:59 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold spoke glowingly of his team's re-signing of RB Bilal Powell this past week. 'Great to have BP back,' Darnold said. 'Can't wait to get to work with him. I haven't seen him in a while, so it's going to be nice to be able to see him. I know BP is a great guy and obviously a great player, so it's great to have him back.'

Footballguys view: Powell will be a familiar face in the backfield for Darnold at times this year if he makes the team. and he might be the only back from the 2018 roster to make the team. It's also good to see Darnold making "leadership" quotes about his teammates.

Jets | Bilal Powell back with NYJ    Fri Jun 7, 07:04 PM

Free-agent RB Bilal Powell (Jets) agreed to terms with the New York Jets Friday, June 7. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Powell should be the #2 back, and it's not great news for Le'Veon Bell, but probably not bad news either. We still have a track record of unpredictable backfield usage from Jets coach Adam Gase, so this development adds another element that could frustrate us during the season if he is anything more than a few touch a game player.

Jets | Le'Veon Bell to skip workouts next week    Thu Jun 6, 07:18 PM

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell said he does not plan to participate in practices next week and will return to Florida to train.

Footballguys view: The practices next week are voluntary. Bell did participate in mandatory minicamp but it looks like he is not going to show up to any voluntary workouts.

Jets | Sam Darnold working on chemistry with Bell    Tue Jun 4, 06:55 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold said Tuesday, June 4, it'll take time to form chemistry with new RB Bell. 'I don't think there's necessarily a certain time period that you can put on it,' Darnold said. 'It's just kind of when we click, we click. ... I think, me and (Bell), we get along well. So, that's kind of the first step in building that relationship. It's good to kind of go on the same page with him and just see how he kind of runs routes and how he runs out there. I haven't seen him really run and it was good to kind of see him run some routes and throw the ball to him a little bit.'

Footballguys view: Makes sense, and a good move for the young quarterback. Bell is going to be the focal point of the offense, and Darnold is going to get to make a lot of plays handing off and throwing to him. Darnold added that he wants to get some offensive players together for workouts ahead of training camp later this summer.

Jets | Le'Veon Bell fully confident in return    Tue Jun 4, 01:48 PM

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell said Tuesday, June 4, that he understands if some have forgotten he was the best running back in the league when last played 17 months ago. Bell added that people 'will remember' when he takes the field again.

Footballguys view: Fantasy GMs are fairly confident in his return to form as well. Bell is currently going in the top-10 of any fantasy draft, and he should be the centerpiece of what the Jets do on offense.

Jets | Le'Veon Bell reports to minicamp    Tue Jun 4, 03:03 AM

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell reported to the team's facility Monday, June 3, ahead of the team's voluntary minicamp start on Tuesday, June 4.

Footballguys view: Bell and new head coach Adam Gase might have a thing or two to talk about after rumors came out that Gase was cool to the idea of adding Bell in free agency. No matter what the two really think of each other, Bell and Gase could work well together. Bell should be the centerpiece of the Jets offense, being featured as both a runner and receiver. He's a top-10 fantasy pick and Bell has a current ADP of RB7 (1.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Blessuan Austin may miss start of season    Sun Jun 2, 01:38 PM

New York Jets CB Blessuan Austin (knee) could start the 2019 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Austin could eventually start on the outside opposite Trumaine Johnson but he only played five games over his junior and senior seasons because of knee injuries. The team hopes that Darryl Roberts rises to the occasion, but if he doesn't, Morris Claiborne could be re-signed. This spot will likely be a weakness that opposing pass offenses target frequently.

Jets | Quinnen Williams still limited    Sat Jun 1, 09:41 PM

New York Jets DT Quinnen Williams (calf) has been limited to individual and positional drills during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Williams should be an instant impact player this year, especially because he'll line up next to Leonard Williams. Hopefully he is fully healthy by the open of camp so defensive coordinator Gregg Williams can devise lots of ways to cross up blocking schemes with one of the best interior line combos in the league.

Jets | Chris Herndon generating excitement    Fri May 31, 03:08 PM

New York Jets TE Chris Herndon looked 'really good' during organized team activities this week and 'can be a huge red-zone weapon for Darnold and new coach Adam Gase,' according to Brian Costello of the New York Post. Gase called Herndon a 'unicorn type player' in March and seems excited about what he can do with him inside his offense, per Costello.

Footballguys view: Herndon has some upside and we saw him earn the trust of QB Sam Darnold a year ago. He's facing a suspension from the league after pleading to DWI back in January. Herndon finished as the No. 15 fantasy tight end in 2018 and has a current ADP of TE20 (14.04). We like what everyone is saying about him this offseason but need to see how many games he's suspended for.

Jets | Brandon Shell takes part in practice    Fri May 24, 07:52 PM

New York Jets OT Brandon Shell (knee) participated in team drills during practice Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: This is good news after Shell had knee surgery at the end of the 2017 season. The offensive line is not a strength, so having the starting right tackle back so early in the offseason is important with a new coaching staff on board.

Link to story

Jets | Marcus Maye limited    Fri May 24, 06:47 PM

New York Jets S Marcus Maye (shoulder) was held out of team drills during practice Thursday, May 23, because he is recovering from shoulder surgery.

Footballguys view: The Jets somewhat thin depth chart at safety did gain some experience when Maye missed time last year, but they will be better with him in, and he needs time to learn new defensive coordinator Gregg Williams's system.

Jets | Adam Gase says Le'Veon Bell won't be traded    Thu May 23, 12:27 PM

New York Jets head coach Adam Gase on Thursday, May 23, called a recent report 'ridiculous' that the Jets will consider trading RB Le'Veon Bell before he played a down with the team.

Footballguys view: Not only did Gase shoot down the rumblings about Bell getting traded, he also said that he was excited to work with the superstar back. Things are a bit tumultuous with the Jets right now, but Fantasy GMs should know that Bell is going to be the centerpiece of the offense. He's going to get enough work as a runner and receiver out of the backfield to warrant a top-10 selection. Bell has a current ADP of RB6 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Quinnen Williams slowed by injury    Thu May 23, 12:12 PM

New York Jets DT Quinnen Williams sat out OTA drills Thursday, May 23 as he is deals with a calf injury.

Footballguys view: Williams was one of the best, if not the best, players in the 2019 NFL draft. The Jets used the No. 3 overall pick on the big defensive tackle and he should be quite disruptive for their defense inside. The injury is not believed to be anything major, and he was doing light work on the side during practice.

Jets | Deonte Thompson joining Jets    Tue May 21, 12:28 PM

Free-agent WR Deonte Thompson (Bills) is signing with the New York Jets, his agent said Tuesday, May 21.

Jets | NY Jets part with Jordan Leggett    Mon May 20, 04:39 PM

New York Jets TE Jordan Leggett was waived Monday, May 20.

Footballguys view: Interim general manager Adam Gase is not wasting any time when it comes to getting rid of players. Leggett, a fifth-round pick out of Clemson in the 2017 NFL draft, failed to impress in 2018 after missing most of his rookie season due to a knee injury. Some team may take a chance on him for a reserve role.

Jets | NYJ targeting Peyton Manning?    Sat May 18, 11:03 AM

Former QB Peyton Manning is being rumored to be a target for the New York Jets' general manager vacancy. Manning played under head coach Adam Gase with the Denver Broncos and fits the mold the team is seeking. 'It's more than a talent-evaluation guy,' Jets CEO Christopher W. Johnson said. 'I want a great manager, a communicator, who can collaborate well with the building. I'm convinced we're going to find that person.'

Footballguys view: Manning is destined to run a team some day. First, perhaps as a general manager. Then, we could see him as a team owner one day. Manning is all about football and has a great relationship with Adam Gase. He's turned down other job offers, both in the media and NFL front offices, so we'll see if the Jets offer is more enticing to the future Hall of Fame quarterback.

Jets | Robby Anderson signs tender    Thu May 16, 04:29 PM

New York Jets WR Robby Anderson signed his restricted free-agent tender Thursday, May 16.

Footballguys view: The Jets put a second-round tender on Anderson and he signs a one-year deal worth $3.1 million with this move. Anderson should be able to produce like a WR3 for Fantasy GMs at least this year.

Jets | New York deals Darron Lee    Wed May 15, 09:42 PM

The New York Jets have agreed to trade LB Darron Lee to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Well that didn't take long. Adam Gase took over as the interim General Manager on Wednesday and gets rid of Lee the same day. The Jets declined picking up the fifth-year option for Lee earlier this season and spent a ton of money to secure the services of ILB C.J. Mosley in free agency.

Jets | Le'Veon Bell wasn't wanted by head coach    Wed May 15, 01:28 PM

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell signing with the team didn't please head coach Adam Gase, who didn't want to spend money at the position, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Just when you thought it would be a slow news day, the Jets are making waves on in the middle of the week. Former Jets GM Mike Maccagnan (fired on Wednesday) was in charge when the Jets signed Bell to a a four-year, $52.5 million contract with $35 million guaranteed. Gase has mostly used RBBCs in stops with the Broncos and the Dolphins, but with the Jets they should feed Bell early and often.

Jets | Daniel Jeremiah to Jets?    Wed May 15, 01:12 PM

NFL Network draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is under serious consideration for a front-office position with the New York Jets, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This makes a lot of sense if the Jets hire Eagles vice president of player personnel Joe Douglas as their GM. Jeremiah has scouting experience in the NFL with the Ravens and the Eagles, and he's close with Douglas. If Jeremiah leaves TV for a front office job, it will be the second NFL Network draft analyst to do so in consecutive years as Mike Mayock moved on from TV to be the Raiders general manager.

Jets | Mike Maccagnan, Brian Heimerdinger fired    Wed May 15, 12:00 PM

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan and vice president of player personnel Brian Heimerdinger were fired Wednesday, May 15, according to sources.

Footballguys view: There have been plenty of rumblings about new head coach Adam Gase and Maccagnan not getting along, and this firing confirms that something wasn't right. Gase takes over as the interim GM while the Jets search for a new lead executive.

Jets | NY Jets scoop two up off waivers    Tue May 14, 05:02 PM

Free-agent WR Xavier Ubosi (Patriots) and OT Calvin Anderson (Patriots) were claimed off waivers by the New York Jets on Tuesday, May 14. WR DeAngelo Yancey and OT Dieugot Joseph were waived to open up roster spots for the duo.

Footballguys view: If you play in crazy deep dynasty formats, Ubosi is an interesting player to monitor. Measuring in at 6'3" 215 pounds, Ubosi was a bit of a touchdown hog at UAB over the last two seasons. Playing in a run-first offense in college, Ubosi is a project and a long-shot to make the Jets practice squad.

New York Jets LB/DE Jachai Polite, a third-round draft pick, signed a four-year, $3.6 million contract with the team on Sunday, May 12. The deal includes a $1.1 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Polite had first-round tape, but an undrafted free agent pre-draft season marked by a poor workout, an injury, and reportedly poor interviews. He'll get to line up next to Leonard and Quinnen Williams to make his job a lot easier.

Footballguys view: Cashman was considered as high as a second round pick on some points but fell well into the third day. He's highly athletic and could help the Jets decide to move on from 2016 first-round pick Darron Lee if they think he can provide effective depth at inside linebacker.

New York Jets RB Le'Veon Bell is expected to be at the team's mandatory minicamp in June. 'I don't expect him not to be there,' head coach Adam Gase said Friday, May 10.

Footballguys view: The double negative is a little confusing, but we agree with Gase. Bell not showing for voluntary workouts is no big deal, but missing mandatory minicamp practices would be more concerning.
