Jets | Mike Goodson to plead not guilty Tue May 21, 03:10 PM
New York Jets RB Mike Goodson will plead not guilty to all charges, with the most serious being a second-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. If convicted, Goodson would face a minimum three-year prison sentence under the Graves Act. Goodson's defense is confident they will show that he was not in possession of the gun. Goodson also faces a third-degree possession of a loaded handgun and marijuana and paraphernalia charges.

Jets | Could name starting QB soon Tue May 21, 02:03 PM
New York Jets QBs Mark Sanchez and Geno Smith are expected to compete for the starting quarterback job this offseason, but the quarterback competition could be settled well before the team even heads to training camp in July. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg wants one of the two QBs to separate himself from the other, and if that happens this week, the team isn't against naming their starter early. 'Common sense tells you that you hope it's quick, but this is going to be a full blown competition. Period,' Mornhinweg said.
| Footballguys view: There will be a starter entering training camp but that doesn't mean that will stay the same once the regular season starts. Rookie Geno Smith is looking to prove doubters wrong and it wouldn't surprise us if he beats out Mark Sanchez for the starting job. |

Jets | Mike Goodson meets with team officials Mon May 20, 03:02 PM
New York Jets RB Mike Goodson was in attendance at the team's first OTA practice Monday, May 20, but only to meet with team officials following his arrest on drug and weapons charges last week. Goodson didn't participate or watch the team's workouts, and his future with the team is uncertain. If Goodson pleads guilty or is convicted of unlawful possession of a handgun, he'll be subject to the Graves Act, which is a New Jersey law that carries a minimum of three years in jail.
| Footballguys view: His spot on the team is a serious question mark right now. We'll see if the team wants to keep him around in 2013 as the legal process could drag out a while to find a conclusion. If he stays with the team Goodson will compete with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell to be the Jets starting RB. |

Jets | Did not show interest in Brian Hoyer Sun May 19, 01:14 PM
The New York Jets did not express interest or make an offer to Cleveland Browns QB Brian Hoyer before he signed with the Browns.
| Footballguys view: The Jets may look to add another QB for training camp since David Garrard had to retire. Hoyer wasn't an upgrade over guys like Greg McElroy so there's no reason for the Jets to have interest. |

Jets | Teammate does not think Mike Goodson will stay Sat May 18, 02:43 PM
New York Jets OG Willie Colon said he does not think RB Mike Goodson will remain with the team after being arrested earlier this week. 'It's one of the things where it's zero-tolerance with stuff like that,' Colon said. 'It's sad. Mike could have been huge for us.'
| Footballguys view: Colon is getting a little ahead of himself here. We wouldn't be surprised if Goodson was cut by the Jets but he was guaranteed $2MM and that price tag could keep him on the roster. Goodson could get jail time and a suspension is also looming for the veteran back. |

Jets | Update on Mike Goodson Fri May 17, 01:33 PM
Updating a previous report, New York Jets RB Mike Goodson was arrested Friday, May 17, and charged with possession of marijuana under 50 grams, possession of paraphernalia, unlawful possession of a loaded handgun and possession of a hollow-point bullet. Goodson was being held on $50,000 full cash bail.

Jets | Dee Milliner fires agent Fri May 17, 01:05 PM
New York Jets CB Dee Milliner became the second rookie on the team to fire his agency, Impact Sport, after he failed to be taken in the top five of the 2013 NFL Draft. QB Geno Smith also fired his agent after falling into the second round. Milliner must wait five days before hiring a new agency. Since 2000, Impact Sports has represented 12 first-round picks. He reportedly was slowly recovering from shoulder surgery before the draft, although teams were informed that it wasn't much of an issue.

Jets | Quinton Coples putting forth more effort Fri May 17, 10:05 AM
New York Jets LB Quinton Coples said he has responded to the coaches' criticism by giving more effort in the weight room.
| Footballguys view: Effort was always a big question mark with Coples in college. We'll see if he can maintain this new found motivation and play up to his potential in 2013. |
Jets | David Garrard could return as coach Thu May 16, 03:57 PM
Retired QB David Garrard said the New York Jets offered him the chance to attend their training camp as a coaching intern. Garrard said he will have to talk with his wife before deciding to accept the offer.
| Footballguys view: Now that Garrard is done playing football he'll have to consider what he wants to do with his life. Several former players have turned to the coaching ranks once their playing days are over. |

Jets | Mark Sanchez expects to win starting job Thu May 16, 03:51 PM
New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez said he expects to win the starting quarterback job this offseason. Sanchez said he knows he needs to cut down on his interceptions and expects to improve in that area.
| Footballguys view: We like the confidence coming from Sanchez here. We'll see if that can carry over to the football field when the games are live. Sanchez has been the Stuart Smalley of QBs in recent years because of his lack of confidence and mistake prone play. He'll have to beat out second-round rookie QB Geno Smith if he wants to win the starting job. |

Jets | Joe McKnight not giving up roster spot Thu May 16, 03:31 PM
New York Jets RB Joe McKnight said he is not going to give up his roster spot because the team brought in competition. "I don't care who they bring in, they're going (to have to) kill me to take my spot. You understand that now?" McKnight said in the locker room Thursday. "Just because they bring Goodson and Ivory in they already think I'm gone. They just bringing people in for competition, they ain't bringing nobody in to say, 'Joe is done.'"
| Footballguys view: McKnight has failed to impress during his short pro career. He's fourth on the depth chart right now but could stick on the roster because of his ability to contribute on special teams. |
Jets | David Garrard says team will have open QB competition Thu May 16, 02:32 PM
Retired QB David Garrard said the New York Jets coaches told him they would have an open competition for the starting quarterback job during the offseason and that no player will be promised the starting job.
| Footballguys view: This is Mark Sanchez's job to lose but many expect rookie Geno Smith to win the job before the start of the regular season. Smith is a better athlete, has more confidence, and is an extremely intelligent player. He gives defenses more to worry about than Sanchez does. |

Jets | Mark Sanchez should have edge on starting job Wed May 15, 05:11 PM
New York Jets starting QB Mark Sanchez should have an edge on the starting quarterback job over QB Geno Smith after the news of QB David Garrard possibly retiring today, according to former head coach Herm Edwards. 'This is now Mark Sanchez's job to lose,' Edwards said.
| Footballguys view: Sanchez may have the edge because of his experience. Smith has better confidence than Sanchez and will be fueled by the fact that he fell to the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft. Anything can happen, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Smith win the starting job. |

Jets | Dee Milliner will not be given starting job Wed May 15, 04:56 PM
New York Jets defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman said CB Dee Milliner will not be given the starting cornerback job and will have to compete for the job. 'If he earns the job, great, if he doesn't, it just means that someone else stepped up and performed at a high level throughout OTAs, minicamp and training camp,' Thurman said. 'We're going to play the best guys, no matter where they were drafted.'
| Footballguys view: That's nice in theory, but the reality is he should be able to win the job handily in training camp. Milliner was considered to be the top CB in this draft class because of his speed, athleticism, and nose for the football. |
Jets | Antonio Cromartie to cover top receivers Wed May 15, 04:55 PM
New York Jets defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman indicated CB Antonio Cromartie will cover the opponent's No. 1 receiver this season.
| Footballguys view: Good move for the Jets here, and one everyone assumed would happen. Cromartie is taking over for Darrelle Revis (Buccaneers) who was traded away earlier this offseason. That leaves rookie Dee Milliner in fewer pressure situations. |

Jets | Appears David Garrard is retiring Wed May 15, 04:22 PM
It appears that New York Jets QB David Garrard (knee) is preparing to retire as he continues to have knee issues. 'Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do,' Garrard said.
| Footballguys view: The QB position in New York is going to come down to Mark Sanchez versus second-round pick Geno Smith. Anything can happen in training camp, but Smith should be able to make a strong case for himself as the starter. |

Head coach Rex Ryan's role in personnel decisions also appears to be diminished.

NFL | Josh Cribbs injury update Tue May 14, 08:48 PM
New York Jets General Manager John Idzik said free agent WR Josh Cribbs "isn't quite there" in his recovery from offseason knee surgery.
| Footballguys view: The Jets gave Cribbs a physical last week and have interest in signing him. Other teams like the Lions and Cardinals have also shown interest in the veteran KR/WR. |
Jets | Marcus Davis claimed Tue May 14, 06:01 PM
The New York Jets claimed WR Marcus Davis off waivers from the New York Giants Tuesday, May 14, and released WR Antavious Wilson in a corresponding move.
| Footballguys view: Davis went undrafted out of Virginia Tech but has intriguing upside as a player. His size (6'2" 233 pounds) matched with his speed (4.5) makes him a potential big play threat on downfield targets. He went to Virginia Tech as a QB but was quickly converted to WR. Davis is incredibly athletic and can make difficult catches seem routine. Questions abound about his inconsistency, focus, effort, and concentration. The Jets could have something here if they figure out how to properly motivate (and constantly motivate) Davis. |
Jets | Rex Ryan compliments Dee Milliner Mon May 13, 09:51 PM
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan praised CB Dee Milliner on being a sharp player. '(We were) firing the questions at him the whole time, in the meetings. He's sharp,' Ryan said.
| Footballguys view: Milliner was considered the top CB in this draft class. He's an incredibly gifted athlete with speed, good hip turn, plus click and close ability to get to the ball. He's got big shoes to fill as he's replacing Darrelle Revis (Buccaneers) in the starting lineup. |
Jets | Geno Smith expects to learn from Mark Sanchez Mon May 13, 07:19 PM
New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he expects to learn from QB Mark Sanchez even though they will be competing for the starting quarterback job. 'He's a guy I'm going to be in competition with but at the same time I'm going to learn from,' Smith said. 'He's a professional, he's done it for several years. He's carried himself well in my opinion. Everything that he's done, the ups and downs, the overall perception of him may be swayed depending on the games he's played, but I think he's a pretty good quarterback and I like forward to competing with him and being around him.'
| Footballguys view: Smith wants to prove doubters wrong and it should motivate him to play up to his potential. He's highly intelligent, athletic, and accurate on underneath throws. Smith realizes this starting job is up for grabs and knows what he has to do in order to win the competition. |

Jets | Raving about Geno Smith Mon May 13, 10:17 AM
The New York Jets are 'smitten' with rookie QB Geno Smith, and it's beginning to look more likely that the starting job is his to lose.
| Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Jets selected Smith in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft to compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting job. Sanchez is the Stuart Smalley of NFL QBs and lost his confidence some time ago. Smith has supreme confidence in his ability and should be able to beat out Sanchez during training camp. |

The New York Jets have signed undrafted free-agent WR Thomas Mayo (California, PA), DT Lanier Coleman (Louisiana-Lafayette), LB Sean Progar-Jackson (Northern Illinois) and PK Brett Maher (Nebraska). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.
| Footballguys view: Mayo has a large wingspan, 39-inch vertical, and good ball tracking ability on deep passes. He has a nice size/speed combination but struggled to separate from faster cornerbacks at the East/West Shrine Game in 2012. |
Jets | Roosevelt Holliday cut Sun May 12, 01:37 PM

Jets | Coach unhappy with Quinton Coples Sat May 11, 03:20 PM
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he is unhappy with how LB Quinton Coples has performed in the weight room this offseason. Ryan said he believes Coples could play outside linebacker but will have to compete for a starting job if he does not improve in the weight room.
| Footballguys view: No real surprise here. There were plenty of question marks about Coples' motivation coming out of college. At the Senior Bowl in 2012 he looked great as he was obviously motivated to improve his draft stock. Coples needs to work harder if he wants to play up to his potential. |
Jets | Geno Smith wants to win starting job Fri May 10, 05:40 PM
New York Jets QB Geno Smith wants to win the starting job, but also is taking things one day at a time. 'I know Mark is a competitor, I understand he wants to win the job,' Smith said. 'We all do."
| Footballguys view: He'll compete with Mark Sanchez and David Garrard for the starting job in training camp. Anything can happen but we wouldn't be surprised to see Smith win the job. It's nice to see his confidence high after slipping to the second-round in the 2013 NFL draft. |
Jets | Rex Ryan praises Geno Smith Fri May 10, 02:43 PM
New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan praised QB Geno Smith on the first day of the teams minicamp. 'For the most part, he did throw the ball in rhythm pretty well... So it was good,' Ryan said.
| Footballguys view: Smith is going to compete with Mark Sanchez to be the starting quarterback for the Jets this year. Anything can happen (especially with the Jets) but most expect Smith to win the job at some point this year if not in week one. |
Jets | Dee Milliner says rehab going well Fri May 10, 01:35 PM
New York Jets CB Dee Milliner (shoulder) said his rehab from offseason shoulder surgery is going well and expects to be ready for the start of training camp.
| Footballguys view: The Jets need Milliner to get healthy and will monitor his situation closely. Milliner has big shoes to fill as he's replacing Darrelle Revis (Buccaneers) in the starting lineup. |

Free-agent WR Joshua Cribbs (Browns) met with the New York Jets Wednesday, May 8, and left without a deal. The two sides discussed parameters of a deal, but no formal offer was made.
| Footballguys view: Cribbs is going around to several different teams to try and find the right fit. He already has an offer on the table from the Raiders. |

Jets | Joe McKnight's spot could be in jeopardy Wed May 8, 10:19 PM
New York Jets RB Joe McKnight's roster spot could be in jeopardy if the team decides to sign free-agent WR Joshua Cribbs (Browns) because Cribbs could handle the kick return duties.
| Footballguys view: McKnight has failed to do much during his pro career and now may be the odd man out with the Jets. We'd consider him fourth on the depth chart right now behind Chris Ivory, Mike Goodson, and Bilal Powell. |
Jets | Could show interest in Brandon Lloyd Wed May 8, 10:18 PM
The New York Jets could express interest in free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (Patriots) this offseason.
| Footballguys view: The Jets have big questions marks in their WR corps behind Santonio Holmes and Jeremy Kerley. They could have interest in Lloyd or another veteran like Braylon Edwards. |

Jets | Interested in two WRs Wed May 8, 07:54 PM
The New York Jets have expressed interest in free-agent WR Braylon Edwards (Jets) and WR Ramses Barden (Giants).
| Footballguys view: Edwards could always stay with the Jets. He has good chemistry with QB Mark Sanchez and can be a reliable veteran target. Edwards re-joined the Jets last year after the Seahawks let him go in December. In three games (all starts) he compiled 10 catches for 125 yards. |

Jets | Joshua Cribbs to visit Wed May 8, 07:48 PM
The New York Jets are scheduled to meet with free-agent WR Joshua Cribbs (Browns).

Jets | Teammate thinks Mark Sanchez should start Wed May 8, 07:15 PM
New York Jets WR Santonio Holmes indicated he believes QB Mark Sanchez should be the team's starting quarterback at this point. 'Right now, it's Sanchez, and that's who we're going with, and we're going to continue on this road until time permits,' Holmes said.
| Footballguys view: Note the phrase 'right now.' Sanchez should get the veteran nod at the start of camp as the team's top QB. However, there will be a competition at the position between Sanchez, rookie Geno Smith, and veteran David Garrard in training camp. Anything could happen with the Jets and it wouldn't surprise us to see Smith ahead of Sanchez when the regular season starts. |

New York Jets QB David Garrard will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for the team's starting quarterback job, and if he stays healthy, may very well be the Week 1 starter, according to a rival team executive.
| Footballguys view: If Geno Smith can't beat out David Garrard then there's a problem. We feel Smith and Mark Sanchez are the most likely to win the starting job for the Jets in week one. Experience is the best teacher and Smith needs to learn on the job. |
