Jets | Darrelle Revis facing charges    Thu Feb 16, 09:16 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis is facing pending charges of robbery, terroristic threats, conspiracy and aggravated assault as a result of his role in an altercation over the weekend, according to a police statement Thursday, Feb. 16.

Footballguys view: As if the Jets didn't already have a huge impetus to cut him loose. All the facts aren't in yet, of course, but with his contract plus the rapid decline in play this might just be one thing too many.

Jets | Ryan Clady's option declined    Wed Feb 15, 06:44 PM

New York Jets OT Ryan Clady's 2017 option was declined Wednesday, Feb. 15, which makes Clady an unrestricted free agent this offseason.

Footballguys view: Over the last two years, Clady has only played in nine games. Clady will have to settle for a short-term "prove it" deal now that he's on the open market. The move saves the Jets $10 million in cap space....something that was needed since they were $8 million over the cap before the move.

Jets | Good chance Brandon Marshall is cut    Tue Feb 14, 09:22 AM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall has about a 60 percent chance of being cut this offseason, in the opinion of The Star-Ledger's Darryl Slater.

Footballguys view: Marshall has a cap number of $7.5 million in 2017, but there's no dead money remaining on his contract. They could free up all of that money if they release the veteran receiver. At this time, the Jets are $7.9 million over the cap. They'll have to make some moves to free up enough space just to sign their rookie class.

Jets | Ryan Clady may be cut this week    Mon Feb 13, 06:30 PM

New York Jets OT Ryan Clady could be released by Wednesday, Feb. 15, because he is scheduled to receive a $1 million roster bonus this week.

Footballguys view: In his first season with the Jets, Clady made it through only nine games before a rotator cuff injury ended his year. Clady could remain on the roster if he agrees to restructure his contract.

Jets | Brandon Marshall plans to change style    Sat Feb 11, 08:21 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said he will 'absolutely' change his leadership style after his vocal approach caused friction in the locker room in 2016.

Footballguys view: Marshall has been known to speak his mind quite often. It's just who he is, and it's the way he plays the game with great passion. We think the emotion can still be there with Marshall, but he may try to be more constructive if he has any criticism for the offense.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson may be available again    Sat Feb 11, 01:24 PM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson likely will be made available in a trade again this offseason, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: Let's see if the Jets can get somebody to bite this year....and let's see if their asking price goes down. The Jets may not be able to receive more than a third-round pick in a possible trade.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick's contract voided    Fri Feb 10, 11:08 PM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick's contract voids Friday, Feb. 10, but he likely won't become an official free agent until March 9.

Footballguys view: The Jets won't go back to the well with Fitzpatrick in 2017. There's buzz about Tyrod Taylor (Bills) being their top target at quarterback. Jay Cutler could also find his way to the Big Apple this season. Stay tuned.

Jets | NYJ not thinking Deshaun Watson at No. 6?    Thu Feb 9, 07:42 PM

The New York Jets are 'not seriously considering' Clemson QB Deshaun Watson with the No. 6 overall draft pick, according to the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta, who hasn't talked to any talent evaluator that believes Watson is worthy of a Top-10 selection.

Footballguys view: There are a lot of questions around Watson and plenty of time between now and the draft to answer them. Whether the Jets are or aren't looking at him or any other quarterback is impossible to really know as we have entered the "season of lies" and now cannot trust anything any team source says. It's all jockeying for the draft.

Jets | Jay Cutler unlikely to land with Jets    Thu Feb 9, 10:41 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is unlikely to land with the New York Jets, according to sources.

Footballguys view: We're curious as to how much Chicago would want for him. It's good sense to pass on Cutler, as far as we are concerned, as the Jets should be in rebuild mode and Cutler is a fit for a win-now team.

Jets | NYJ a landing spot for Jay Cutler?    Wed Feb 8, 10:48 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is a 'possibility' to join the New York Jets if he is released as expected this offseason, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Confora.

Footballguys view: That sound you heard was thousands of Jets fans screaming as they tore their hair out. Clearly, the Jets think they are closer to contending than they looked in 2016. Also, would this mean the end of Brandon Marshall, who Cutler reportedly feuded with before the former left the Chicago Bears?

Jets | Jeremy Bates joins Jets staff    Wed Feb 8, 02:14 PM

The New York Jets have hired former Chicago Bears quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates as their new quarterbacks coach.

Footballguys view: This move could indicate that Jay Cutler is going to be a target of the Jets this offseason. Cutler is expected to be released by the Bears, and he would likely jump at the chance to play for Bates again. Some of Cutler's best football was played when Bates was coaching him with the Denver Broncos.

Jets | Three Jets players may be on bubble    Mon Feb 6, 06:47 PM

New York Jets OT Ryan Clady, OT Breno Giacomini and LB Erin Henderson are candidates to be released this offseason because the Jets could save salary cap space if they can be released. The team would save $10 million in cap space if they cut Clady, $4.5 million if they released Giacomini and $2.6 million if they cut Henderson.

Footballguys view: The Jets swapped a fifth round pick for a seventh to get Clady when D'Brickashaw Ferguson retired last spring, but it's questionable whether he is worth his big price tag for 2017.

Jets | Nick Mangold could be cap casualty    Mon Feb 6, 06:40 PM

New York Jets C Nick Mangold could be cap casualty this offseason since the team would save $9.1 million in salary cap space if he is released. The team may try to work on a restructured deal with Mangold during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Mangold was once of the premier centers in the NFL, but injuries and age may have caught up with him.

Jets | New York wants Jeremy Bates    Mon Feb 6, 05:57 PM

Former Chicago Bears quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates is being targeted by the New York Jets for their vacant quarterbacks coach position, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Bates worked with offensive coordinator John Morton at USC, and if the Jets have any designs on Jay Cutler, he worked with Cutler during their time together in Denver.

Jets | Mike Pennel claimed by Jets    Mon Feb 6, 05:04 PM

Free-agent DT Mike Pennel (Packers) was claimed by the New York Jets Monday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Pennel stuck as an undrafted player and looked like he was going to be core part of the Packers defensive line, but two suspensions wore out his welcome.

Jets | Darrelle Revis may have to take pay cut    Mon Feb 6, 09:52 AM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis may have to take a pay cut from his $15.3 million salary cap charge to stay with the team in 2017. He has a $2 million roster bonus due March 11.

Footballguys view: Revis isn't a top corner any more, he might not even be a better than average corner. The Jets could move him to safety, but at either position he would be overpaid at a 15.3 million cap number.

Jets | NYJ 'seem' to have eyes on Mike Glennon    Sat Feb 4, 06:20 PM

Impending free-agent QB Mike Glennon may be the most likely candidate to fill the New York Jets' need at quarterback, according to NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: Glennon was actually excellent by rookie standards back in 2013, and he has a better resume than Brock Osweiler because his success was earlier in his career. Osweiler got 37 million guaranteed, but his failure will give teams pause when paying Glennon. He should get an incentive and playing-time bonus laden deal somewhere along with a chance to compete to start. The Jets aren't going to be one of the most attractive destinations for a quarterback so a second-tier option like Glennon makes sense.

Jets | Deshaun Watson talks up NYJ    Sat Feb 4, 12:05 AM

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson said he 'wouldn't mind' playing for the New York Jets, and Watson believes he has improved enough as a pocket passer to succeed in the NFL.

Footballguys view: The New York market takes a big personality, so Watson should know what he is inviting here. The Jets will be players in the intriguing free agent quarterback market, which could affect their decision at #6 with 2-3 quarterbacks in play.

Jets | Quincy Enunwa enjoys career year    Thu Feb 2, 10:20 PM

New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa finished the 2016 season with 58 catches for 857 yards and four touchdowns, setting career highs in all three categories.

Footballguys view: Enunwa was much further along than anyone outside of the Jets realized entering the 2016 season. He should enter 2017 as a starter along side Eric Decker, with late season UDFA wonder Robby Anderson also playing a large role, although the trio's value will be subject to the quality of quarterback play for the Jets next season.

Jets | Stump Mitchell hired by Jets    Wed Feb 1, 11:05 AM

Former Arizona Cardinals running backs coach Stump Mitchell was hired by the New York Jets Wednesday, Feb. 1, in the same capacity.

Footballguys view: Mitchell was a long-time member of the Cardinals organization as a player and then as a coach for the last four years. He'll be inheriting a backfield in flux as Bilal Powell finished the season as the starter and playing like one too.

Jets | John Morton named Offensive Coordinator    Tue Jan 31, 11:46 PM

Updating previous reports, the New York Jets officially hired John Morton as their new offensive coordinator Tuesday, Jan. 31. Morton was the New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach in 2016.

Jets | Colin Kaepernick of interest to the Jets?    Mon Jan 30, 12:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick is entering the final year of his contract in due to have a $19.3 million cap figure, and the team can save $16.9 million in cap space by cutting or trading him. One possible destination could be the New York Jets, who named New Orleans Saints receivers coach John Morton as their new offensive coordinator Sunday, Jan. 29. Morton served as the receivers coach in San Francisco from 2011 to 2014 - Kaepernick's first four years in the league.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick is almost certainly not going to be with San Francisco next season, as next GM John Lynch won't make the same mistake that Trent Baalke did last year, seeking trade compensation after paying Kaepernick's hefty price tag. The Jets are among the most desperate quarterback teams in the NFL, although they might wait to see what happens with Tony Romo before pursuing an option like Kaepernick.

Jets | Jets' interest in George Godsey cools    Mon Jan 30, 02:51 AM

Former Houston Texans offensive coordinator George Godsey is not expected to serve as the New York Jets quarterback coach, according to team sources.

Footballguys view: Godsey was in consideration for the team's offensive coordinator position that was just filled by Saints wide receiver coach John Morton. Some were surprised the team did not opt for him, and now it appears that he is not in their plans in any way.

Jets | Robert Nunn hired to coach DL    Mon Jan 30, 02:38 AM

The New York Jets hired former Cleveland Browns defensive line coach Robert Nunn to fill the same capacity, according to team sources.

Footballguys view: Nunn has experience in both a 3-4 and 4-3 defense, and he was the DL coach for the excellent Giants unit that won the Super Bowl in 2011. He has a strong group to work with on the Jets roster, including Leonard Williams and Muhammad Wilkerson

Jets | John Morton set to become NYJ's new OC    Sun Jan 29, 03:07 PM

New Orleans Saints wide receiver coach John Morton is expected to be named the New York Jets' new offensive coordinator, per league sources.

Footballguys view: We'd feel better about Morton's ability to craft a high-powered offense if we knew the Jets had a competent quarterback. Until that happens, the question marks around this Jets team remains.

Jets | Breno Giacomini likely to be cut    Sat Jan 28, 08:25 PM

New York Jets OT Breno Giacomini is expected to be cut this offseason.

Footballguys view: Plagued by back problems all season, Giacomini was put on Injured Reserve in December. Earlier this month, Giacomini had back surgery and is expected to take four months to recover. Due $4.5 million in 2017, Giacomini is unlikely to return for that number.

Jets | Matt Forte more productive on the road    Fri Jan 27, 07:46 PM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte rushed for 419 yards and six touchdowns on the road this season while rushing for 394 yards and one touchdown at home.

Footballguys view: Forte only made it through 14 games this year, but he appeared in seven at home and seven on the road. He's not the player he used to be, but there's still some value to be had from the veteran. He's got a $4 million cap number in 2017, but expect the Jets to find more help in the backfield.

Jets | Ryan Clady restructures    Fri Jan 27, 09:12 AM

New York Jets OT Ryan Clady restructured his contract Friday, Jan. 27. Clady had a $2.5 million bonus due next month, but that was merged into what is now a $10 million base salary. None of that money is guaranteed until Week 1, and he can earn an additional $1 million in incentives.

Footballguys view: Clady hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2014 when he was with the Broncos. Last year, Clady's first season with the Jets was cut to just nine games. The Jets can evaluate him through the summer as they try to find an upgrade at left tackle if at all possible. It's not a great free agent or draft class at left tackle in 2017.

Jets | Darrelle Revis capable of position swap    Thu Jan 26, 10:21 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis has the 'football intelligence' to pick up the safety position, according to defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson.

Footballguys view: There's no question that Revis is no longer the player he used to be at corner. A move to safety could extend his playing career and be a good move for the Jets.

Jets | Aaron Murray works out for Jets    Wed Jan 25, 06:30 PM

Free-agent QB Aaron Murray (Eagles) worked out for the New York Jets Wednesday, Jan. 25.

Footballguys view: He won't be 'the answer' for the Jets' quarterback woes--though he has more upside than anyone they have now--but at the very least he can be a more reliable backup than what they have now.

Free-agent WR Frankie Hammond Jr. (Chiefs) signed a future contract with the New York Jets Monday, Jan. 23.
