The New York Jets are meeting with Texas Tech TE Jace Amaro Wednesday, April 23.

Footballguys view: The Jets #18 pick is about as high as the receiving tight end could go. He is a going to be a great chain mover in the short-intermediate range of the field, which is a big need in the Jets offense.

Jets | No promises to Chris Johnson    Mon Apr 21, 02:38 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the team did not promise RB Chris Johnson a certain amount of carries when he signed with the Jets. Ryan said there are no set roles for any of the running backs at this point.

Footballguys view: Johnson and Chris Ivory will share the backfield, but the Jets love to run the ball, and Johnson should get the passing down work and work as a receiver out of the backfield that is crucial to PPR league value. He's worth a pick as an RB3/Flex with RB2 upside.

Jets | Geno Smith expects to be starter    Mon Apr 21, 02:33 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he believes he will be the starting quarterback this upcoming season even though the team added QB Michael Vick this offseason. He said he believes his play will improve with another year in the offense. Smith believes he will be able to learn from Vick because Vick has experience.

Footballguys view: Smith played well at the end of the season, and he has continuity and chemistry with returning skill players like Jeff Cumberland and Jeremy Kerley. This will be a true competition in camp, and if Smith wins, it will mean that he has progressed well during the offseason. Vick had his best seasons under Jets offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg when both were in Philadelphia, so the veteran is not coming in cold to a brand new offense for him.

Jets | More on Chris Johnson    Mon Apr 21, 10:35 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets RB Chris Johnson's contract is worth $8 million with $3 million guaranteed. He has a $2.75 million salary-cap figure and a $1 million non-guaranteed base salary. In 2015, he has a $5.5 million salary-cap figure with a non-guaranteed $3.5 million base salary with up to a $1 million escalator clause.

Footballguys view: In other words, unless Johnson improves from his level of play in recent years, he might not be a Jet next year.

Jets | Mike Evans to visit    Sun Apr 20, 11:24 PM

The New York Jets are scheduled to meet with Texas A&M WR Mike Evans Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Even though they added Eric Decker in free agency, the Jets need a true number one wide receiver. Evans could be that guy. He reminds some in the scouting community of Jimmy Graham because of his size, wingspan and ability to win at the point of the catch.

Jets | Jason Verrett to visit    Sun Apr 20, 08:14 PM

The New York Jets are scheduled to meet with Texas Christian CB Jason Verrett Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Verrett is a small but feisty corner with the speed to play on the outside at corner. He's also got the ability to play inside against slot receivers. Verrett has drawn comparisons to Alterraun Verner (Buccaneers).

Jets | Jarvis Landry to visit team    Sun Apr 20, 03:40 PM

Louisiana State WR Jarvis Landry will visit the New York Jets Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Landry is a talented receiver who can make difficult catches in traffic. He doesn't get much separation in his routes, but Landry has good concentration. Landry's game is reminiscent of Eric Decker, the veteran free agent who came over from the Broncos earlier this year. He should be a second-round pick.

Jets | Odell Beckham to visit team    Sun Apr 20, 03:34 PM

Updating a previous report, Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham will visit the New York Jets Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Beckham is likely to go off the board in the first round. Many consider him the third-best receiver available in the draft behind Sammy Watkins and Mike Evans. He's incredibly athletic, has insane body control and Beckham as the speed to be a threat after the catch. Even though the Jets added Eric Decker in free agency, they are still looking for a true number one wide receiver.

Jets | Marqise Lee to visit team    Sun Apr 20, 03:31 PM

Southern California WR Marqise Lee will visit the New York Jets Sunday, April 20, and Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Lee is a good route runner who does a good job of quickly making his break at the top of the route. He body catches too many passes which leads to bobbled catches, incompletions and interceptions. This also holds back how much he can gain after the catch. Lee is likely a second-round pick.

Jets | Will have QB competition    Sat Apr 19, 12:08 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson said the team told him QBs Michael Vick and Geno Smith will compete for the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Jets | Interested in Andre Williams    Fri Apr 18, 09:32 AM

The New York Jets are interested in Boston College RB Andre Williams.

Footballguys view: Williams is a big back with a little wiggle and build-up speed at the second level. He runs too upright which makes him an even larger target for defenders to tackle. With 10 receptions during his college career, Williams is pretty much a non-factor in the passing game. The two-down thumper is currently graded as a third-round pick. The Jets just added Chris Johnson in free agency, but they could look for a power back in the draft.

Jets | Chris Johnson open to sharing carries    Thu Apr 17, 08:46 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson said he is fine with sharing carries with other running backs this upcoming season if it helps the team win games.

Footballguys view: Johnson might actually play more effectively with less carries and wear and tear on his body. Also, by allowing Chris Ivory to take the between the tackles pounding, Johnson might even get a few more years out of his body.

Jets | Chris Johnson expects to be cleared soon    Thu Apr 17, 08:42 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson (knee) said he expects to receive medical clearance to resume football activities in the near future. He underwent knee surgery in January but expects to be fully healthy for training camp.

Footballguys view: We've heard conflicting reports as to whether Johnson has arthritis issues in the knee or not, but in what amounts to a one-year, $4 million contract, the Jets have nothing much to lose. Then again, that's what people thought when the team signed David Garrard.

Jets | Believed to have exercised Muhammad Wilkerson's option    Thu Apr 17, 08:23 PM

It is believed the New York Jets have exercised the fifth-year option in DE Muhammad Wilkerson's contract.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson has played very well since coming into the league and the Jets are wise to do this (if they did). He will look good in green for a long time to come.

Jets | Chris Johnson says he is healthy    Thu Apr 17, 01:34 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson said a report that he has arthritis in his knee is not true. Johnson said he has no arthritis in his knee.

Footballguys view: Even if he's a bit banged up, Johnson will split carries with Chris Ivory, saving some wear and tear. At $4 million a year, with a second year as an option, it's really a cheap deal with very little risk. We'll have to see how the split goes for carries, but Johnson may be more effective with less carries.

Jets | Three to visit    Thu Apr 17, 09:33 AM

Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham, Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks and Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard will visit the New York Jets next week.

Footballguys view: The Jets left free agency without a second big receiver, a replacement for Antonio Cromartie or an upgrade at safety, so wide receiver and secondary make a ton of sense.

The New York Jets will use RBs Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory as a tandem this upcoming season and have them split carries. RB Bilal Powell will be the team's No. 3 running back.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. We should see Mike Goodson released by the Jets in the near future.

Jets | Sign Chris Johnson     Wed Apr 16, 03:29 PM

The New York Jets signed RB Chris Johnson (Titans) to a two-year deal Wednesday, April 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: This is the move that makes the most sense for both parties. Johnson will split time in the backfield with Chris Ivory. The Jets get a speedy playmaker who can excel running with an athletic quarterback in the backfield with him.

Jets | Won't overpay for Chris Johnson    Tue Apr 15, 11:54 PM

The New York Jets are sticking to their budget/value system. While they want free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Titans), they will not 'overpay' for him. The depressed running back market suggests Johnson will fetch $3-4 million per year maximum.

Footballguys view: This is what every team is going to respond with. Nobody wants to overpay for an aging veteran running back with motivation issues. We'll see what kind of deal Johnson gets when the ink is actually dry somewhere. In addition to the Jets, the Bills could have interest in Johnson.

Jets | Chris Johnson's visit goes well, but no deal    Tue Apr 15, 07:45 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson's (Titans) visit with the New York Jets reportedly went well Tuesday, April 15, but he left without a deal. Other teams are involved with him, too.

Footballguys view: There's a small handful of potential suitors for Johnson at this time. The Jets could be considered the frontrunners, but no deal seems imminent. Johnson may still be getting interest from the Buffalo Bills as well.

Jets | Chris Johnson visiting    Tue Apr 15, 09:24 AM

The New York Jets are visiting with free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Titans) Tuesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: This is his likely destination. Johnson would be able to be compete with Chris Ivory for the starting job, and he could give the offense another weapon with speed. We'll see if something comes together.

Jets | Will meet with Calvin Pryor    Mon Apr 14, 02:55 PM

The New York Jets are scheduled to meet with Louisville S Calvin Pryor this week.

Footballguys view: Pryor can roam the field in coverage, but he can also play close to the line of scrimmage and make a big hit. He's a violent hitter who loves to initiate contact. Pryor would give any team an intimidating presence at the free safety position. He's a lock to be a first-round pick. The Jets need all the help in the secondary they can get. Pryor could step in and start from day one.

Jets | Have strong presence at LSU Pro Day    Wed Apr 9, 01:53 PM

New York Jets general manager John Idzik and head coach Rex Ryan are attending the Louisiana State Pro Day Wednesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Jets added Eric Decker in free agency, but they still need a true number one wide receiver. That player could be Odell Beckham Jr. He's a big-play receiver who can score any time he touches the ball.

Link to story

Jets | Brandin Cooks to visit    Tue Apr 8, 02:32 PM

The New York Jets will visit with Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks Sunday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Cooks would be a great fit for the Jets in the first round. Even though they added Eric Decker in free agency, they still need help at the position. Cooks reminds some in the scouting community of a young Steve Smith (Ravens). He's not the biggest receiver, but he's fast and feisty.

Jets | Visiting with several CBs    Mon Apr 7, 07:29 PM

The New York Jets have visits scheduled for Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard, Ohio State CB Bradley Roby and Texas Christian CB Jason Verrett.

Footballguys view: Any of these three could be options for the Jets in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft. Dennard is likely to come off the board before Roby or Verrett.

Jets | Not concerned with Chris Johnson's work ethic    Mon Apr 7, 05:42 PM

The New York Jets are not concerned with free-agent RB Chris Johnson's (Titans) work ethic, and they'd be excited with a running back tandem of Johnson and RB Chris Ivory.

Footballguys view: Johnson has had trouble staying motivated as a pro. The Jets could use a "Thunder and Lightning" approach if Johnson is added. The Titans used this approach successfully early in Johnson's career when he split time with LenDale White.

Jets | Darqueze Dennard to visit    Mon Apr 7, 05:34 PM

Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard said he is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets before the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Dennard has the ability to re-route receivers at the line of scrimmage. He's an aggressive player who plays with a physical style. Long speed is a question, but he has the fluidity in his hips to turn and run off of press coverage. The Jets have a need in the secondary even though they added Dimitri Patterson in free agency earlier this year.

Jets | Will meet with C.J. Fiedorowicz    Mon Apr 7, 02:31 PM

The New York Jets are scheduled to meet with Iowa TE C.J. Fiedorowicz later this week.

Footballguys view: Fiedorowicz is a huge tight end with the ability to snuff out defenders as a blocker. He's not a threat to stretch the deep middle seam, but Fiedorowicz can be a red zone target and reliable receiver on underneath routes. The Jets could use a tight end to give Geno Smith (or Michael Vick) a relief valve receiver.

Jets | Will meet with Odell Beckham    Sun Apr 6, 11:28 PM

The New York Jets are scheduled to meet with Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham before the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: This would be a great fit for the Jets in the first round of the draft. The Jets added Eric Decker in free agency, but they could use more punch at the wide receiver position. Beckham is a fast receiver with fluid movements and big-play ability after the catch.
