Jets | N.Y.J. could pursue Antonio Brown    Tue Feb 19, 01:03 PM

The New York Jets should pursue a trade for disgruntled Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown if they're serious about winning, a veteran team reporter wrote Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Footballguys view: With Brown likely to be traded from the Steelers at some point this offseason, expect a lot of teams to show interest. The Jets could use a target like Brown for young quarterback Sam Darnold.

Jets | Steve McLendon probably will not return    Sun Feb 17, 03:54 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent DT Steve McLendon appears unlikely to re-sign with the Jets this offseason, in the opinion of the New York Post's Brian Costello.

Jets | Buster Skrine could leave this offseason    Sun Feb 17, 03:53 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent CB Buster Skrine appears unlikely to re-sign with the Jets this offseason since the team has CB Parry Nickerson ready to replace him at cornerback, in the opinion of the New York Post's Brian Costello.

Jets | Sam Darnold excelled in final weeks    Fri Feb 15, 11:41 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold's 80.7 Total QBR over the final four weeks of the 2018 season was the best mark in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Darnold showed flashes during his rookie season in 2018. New head coach Adam Gase should be able to get the best out of the young passer. We're excited to see how the Jets revamp the offense around Darnold this offseason.

Jets | NYJ unlikely to consider Demaryius Thomas    Wed Feb 13, 08:32 PM

Free-agent WR Demaryius Thomas (Texans) likely will not receive interest from the New York Jets this offseason even though he has played for head coach Adam Gase before, in the opinion of the New York Daily News' Manish Mehta.

Footballguys view: Gase did great things with Thomas (and Peyton Manning) during their time in Denver. The Jets could use some veteran presence in their WR corps but it sounds like Thomas won't be an option. Thomas may not get much interest given his age and the fact he's coming off an Achilles' injury.

Jets | Isaiah Crowell likely to be cut    Wed Feb 13, 11:05 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets RB Isaiah Crowell is expected to be released before a $2 million roster bonus kicks in March 15.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Jets are going to have a different backfield in 2019. Crowell should be gone and the team should let Bilal Powell walk in free agency. That makes Eli McGuire their top back for now...but we expect them to add a lead back in free agency or the draft.

Jets | Ex-Jet believes in Sam Darnold    Sun Feb 10, 12:21 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold has a bright future, according to former standout CB Darrelle Revis. 'I think he (Darnold) can bring a Super Bowl in the near future for the Jets,' Revis told TMZ last week in Atlanta before Super Bowl LIII. 'It's going to take some time, but I feel like he's capable of doing it.'

Footballguys view: Darnold certainly had flashes as a rookie. At times he looked like a first-year player, while other times he wowed Jets fans and coaches with his arm strength and ability to fit passes into small windows. Working on his consistency will be one of the biggest tasks for Darnold in 2019 and beyond.

Jets | Tevin Coleman a target for NYJ?    Sat Feb 9, 09:18 PM

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent RB Tevin Coleman could be signed by the New York Jets to lead their backfield in 2019, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com.

Footballguys view: The Jets should be in the market for RB help via free agency. They may cut RB Isaiah Crowell and not pursue impending free-agent RB Bilal Powell. That leaves Eli McGuire and Trenton Cannon in their backfield to be change-of-pace backs. Coleman is an option, but we think C.J. Anderson might be on their list too.

Jets | Bilal Powell expected to depart    Thu Feb 7, 01:26 AM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell's 'days with the Jets are probably over,' according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, who believes the team will turn to RB Elijah McGuire as their No. 2 back and allow Powell to sign elsewhere in free agency.

Footballguys view: McGuire can be a no.2 back but the Jets need to find a starter. That may come through the draft in the mid rounds or they may make a move in free agency. New Jets head coach loves C.J. Anderson (Rams) and that may be an option this offseason.

Jets | Isaiah Crowell may be let go    Mon Feb 4, 08:59 PM

New York Jets RB Isaiah Crowell may be a candidate to be released this offseason since the team could save $4 million in salary cap space if he is let go.

Footballguys view: Crowell is on the books through the 2020 season. He's got a $5 million cap number in 2019 but there is only $2 million left in dead money. If the Jets let Crowell go, they'll be in the market for another running back. Eli McGuire and Trenton Cannon are explosive players but perhaps best used as change-of-pace backs. Perhaps Jets new head coach Adam Gase will explore the free agent market for a back like C.J. Anderson, a favorite of his from their time working together in Denver. Stay tuned.

Jets | Sam Darnold ready for Adam Gase    Fri Feb 1, 09:33 PM

New York Jets QB Sam Darnold said he is 'excited' to work with head coach Adam Gase and believes Gase can make him a better quarterback. 'I think he's going to help me with everything, mechanics, but mainly how to play the position in the NFL,' Darnold said.

Footballguys view: Gase has a reputation as a quarterback whisperer but didn't really done much to earn it during his time in Miami. Darnold might be a good enough prospect that any coach that works with him will look good.

Jets | NYJ won't break bank for Le'Veon Bell    Thu Jan 31, 11:24 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell is of interest to the New York Jets, but they won't break the bank to get him, in the opinion of beat writer Manish Mehta.

Footballguys view: This will likely be the stance of most teams. Bell isn't going to get the money he is looking for, and he might not even get the money he turned down when he didn't play on the franchise tag last year.

Jets | Kareem Hunt not an option for NY Jets    Mon Jan 28, 01:47 PM

Free-agent RB Kareem Hunt is unlikely to be of interest to the New York Jets, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Footballguys view: Enough time has passed for Hunt to likely get signed somewhere, but that team will have to have a plan to deal with the PR storm the signing will generate. Hunt is obviously still a top talent and should be held in dynasty leagues, but he could start out as a backup who has to earn his touches.

Jets | Dante Fowler may be target for NYJ    Sun Jan 27, 06:19 PM

Los Angeles Rams impending free-agent DE Dante Fowler likely will receive interest from the New York Jets when free agency begins, in the opinion of SNY's Ralph Vacchiano.

Footballguys view: Fowler has had some impact moments and certainly done enough to generate interest in free agency at the all important edge rusher position. The Rams could seek to keep him with the head start on the free agent market and lack of strong options at the position.

Jets | Elijah McGuire made most of injury    Fri Jan 25, 09:51 PM

New York Jets RB Elijah McGuire said he used the time he missed with a foot injury at the start of the 2018 season to log 'mental reps' in the film room, which helped him become a better blocker and better understand what opposing defenses are trying to do.

Footballguys view: McGuire only played in eight games this year due to the foot injury. He made plays at the end of the season, scoring four TDs in the last four weeks of the regular season. He's a talented back but might be best served working in a RBBC. That's why we think the Jets will be in the market for running back help either in free agency or the 2019 NFL draft.

Link to story

Jets | Trenton Cannon needs to slow down    Fri Jan 25, 09:44 PM

New York Jets RB Trenton Cannon needs to slow down and avoid 'getting ahead of his blocks,' according to RB Elijah McGuire.

Footballguys view: McGuire is right, Cannon is an explosive player that could use a little more patience when he runs. Cannon has speed and quickness to his game, and can be a good option as a receiver in open space. Expect the Jets (and new head coach Adam Gase) to pursue running back upgrades in free agency (C.J. Anderson?) or the 2019 NFL draft.

Jets | Pass rush a priority for Jets?    Thu Jan 24, 09:38 PM

Ohio State DE Nick Bosa, Michigan DL Rashan Gary and Clemson DE Clelin Ferrell could all be targets for the New York Jets with the No. 3 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft as the defense transitions to a 4-3 scheme under defensive coordinator Gregg Williams.

Jets | Dowell Loggains hired by Jets    Wed Jan 23, 05:15 PM

Former Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains was hired by the New York Jets Wednesday, Jan. 23, as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach.

Footballguys view: Loggains follows Adam Gase from the Dolphins to the Jets. His biggest task will be getting the most out of Sam Darnold.

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Josh McCown will not re-sign with the Jets this offseason, in the opinion of NJ.com's Darryl Slater.

Jets | Jamal Adams does it all    Sun Jan 20, 08:29 PM

New York Jets S Jamal Adams ranked third among defensive backs in both tackles (115) and sacks (3.5) in 2018, and he also had an interception and three forced fumbles.

Footballguys view: Adams is one of the best young players at his position. New Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams should be able to get the most out of Adams in 2019.

Jets | Henry Anderson may not return    Wed Jan 16, 10:35 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent DE Henry Anderson may not re-sign with the Jets if the team moves to a 4-3 defensive alignment since he is is better option for a 3-4 defense, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: Gregg Williams, the Jets new defensive coordinator, has long run a 4-3 defense and that makes Anderson an odd fit. Anderson has been through a switch to a 4-3 defense when he was with the Colts and it negatively impacted his play. Expect the free agent to be to find a home elsewhere in 2019.

Jets | More on Gregg Williams    Wed Jan 16, 11:48 AM

Updating previous reports, New York Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams agreed to a three-year deal, but financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams gets some time to prove himself as the Jets defensive coordinator...and to prove whether or not he can get along with new Jets head coach Adam Gase.

Jets | Gregg Williams joining Jets    Tue Jan 15, 02:42 PM

Former Cleveland Browns interim head coach Gregg Williams is finalizing a deal to become the next defensive coordinator of the New York Jets, according to a source. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams is known for building an aggressive defense, and that won't change now that he's with the Jets. They have some good young talent on the defensive side of the ball but it remains to be seen how Williams will get along with new head coach Adam Gase.

Jets | Adam Gase officially named head coach    Sat Jan 12, 10:34 AM

The New York Jets officially introduced former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase as their new head coach Friday, Jan. 11.

Footballguys view: Peyton Manning approves of this move. Gase had his best years as an offensive coach when he was working together with Manning in Denver. The coach failed to impress with the Dolphins, mostly because of personnel issues. The Jets have what they believe is a franchise quarterback in Sam Darnold, and Gase's most important task will be crafting an offense suited for their young starter.

Link to story

Jets | Gregg Williams has Jets' interest    Thu Jan 10, 08:48 AM

Former Cleveland Browns interim coach Gregg Williams is under consideration for the New York Jets' defensive coordinator spot, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Williams did a good job as the interim coach for the Browns in 2018. It wasn't enough for him to land the permanent job and now he's looking elsewhere. Williams brings an aggressive defense no matter where he lands and the Jets have a few young, impact players on defense.

Jets | Chris Herndon pleads guilty to DWI    Thu Jan 10, 01:50 AM

New York Jets TE Chris Herndon pleaded guilty to DWI on Tuesday, Jan. 9, stemming from an incident this past June 2 when he crashed his SUV into another vehicle.

Footballguys view: The league is likely to step in and suspend Herndon at some point in 2019. Herndon will lose his license for 90 days as a result according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Jets | Vance Joseph could end up in NY    Wed Jan 9, 08:47 PM

Former Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph is a 'strong possibility' to wind up with the New York Jets serving as head coach Adam Gase's defensive coordinator, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network. In the meantime, Joseph is still 'in the mix' for the Cincinnati Bengals' head coaching vacancy.

Link to story

Jets | Adam Gase expected to land with Jets    Wed Jan 9, 08:18 PM

The New York Jets are expected to hire former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase to the same position, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: So much for Mike McCarthy getting the Jets job. Gase had time in Miami but he didn't have the talent to get the job done. He finds himself staying in the AFC East with a young and talented team. Working with QB Sam Darnold should be exciting for Gase, and Fantasy GMs may love the results. We'll see how quickly Gase can make an impact on his young quarterback, the offense and his new team.

Former Miami Dolphins head coach Adam Gase will interview with the New York Jets Friday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: Gase has a bright offensive mind but things didn't work out for him in Miami. This is the second known interview for the young coaching candidate. Gase would be exciting for the Jets to add given their skill position talent...and oh yeah, QB Sam Darnold.

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was requested for an interview for the New York Jets' head coaching vacancy.

Footballguys view: Bieniemy is going to be one of the hotter head coaching prospects out there. Running the high-powered Chiefs offense is going to be something coveted by teams in the league in need of a head coach. The Jets are looking for someone to get the most out of QB Sam Darnold and Bieniemy might be that guy.
