Jets | Jeff Hammerschmidt hired    Fri Feb 5, 02:41 PM

The New York Jets hired Jeff Hammerschmidt as their new assistant special teams coach Friday, Feb. 5. He spent the last four years with Colorado State. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Jets | New York not interested in Kaepernick    Wed Feb 3, 07:10 PM

The New York Jets are not and have not been interested in San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick has wanted out of San Francisco for months now, and the hiring of new head coach Chip Kelly hasn't changed his stance. A trade remains very likely.

Footballguys view: The Jets may not be interested, but there should be a team out there who might trade for him. It seems like Kaepernick's time in San Francisco is over. Stay tuned.

Jets | Sign Dri Archer    Wed Feb 3, 04:26 PM

Former Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer signed a Reserve/Futures contract with the New York Jets Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Footballguys view: Archer, a third-round pick of the Steelers in 2014, spent about half of the 2015 season out of the league. Lacking the size to be anything more than a change-of-pace back, Archer can contribute as a return man if needed.

Jets | Brandon Marshall doesn't want Kaep    Wed Feb 3, 01:46 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said he doesn't want the team to acquire San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick and wants the team to re-sign impending free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. 'I don't want Kaepernick,' Marshall said on ESPN's 'First Take.' 'I think he's good. My guy's Fitz,' Marshall explained. 'It's nothing against Kaepernick, but what I'm saying is that I have my quarterbacks and I'm good.'

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick and the Jets are expected to discuss a contract extension in the coming weeks. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said he's 'like very much' to re-sign Fitzpatrick this offseason. Even if Fitzpatrick is not the QB of the future, he's likely the QB of the now for the Jets.

Jets | New QB for Gang Green?    Tue Feb 2, 10:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick reportedly 'wants out of San Francisco,' and sources said Tuesday, Feb. 2, that the New York Jets are his preferred destination. The team is aware and intrigued in Kaepernick's desire to play for the cub, but are still in early stages of their offseason planning and evaluation, sources said.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick may want out, but the 49ers may not let him go. It will be interesting to see how new head coach Chip Kelly puts together the roster in San Francisco. Kaepernick has a skill set that should work well in the Kelly system, but he may not want to play for the controversial head coach. Stay tuned.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick talks coming soon?    Tue Feb 2, 07:45 PM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Jets are expected to discuss a contract extension in the coming weeks.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick may not be the quarterback of the future with the Jets, but it just makes sense to keep him around as a placeholder while the team tries to find a young franchise quarterback. OC Chan Gailey has been able to get the best out of Fitzpatrick during their time together with the Jets, just like they did with the Bills years ago. Re-signing Fitzpatrick is the biggest no-brainer of all the Jets offseason decisions.

Jets | Matt Forte an option for New York?    Tue Feb 2, 02:10 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte wouldn't be ruled out as an option for the New York Jets to sign if he becomes available, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: That's all good, but it seems to be a little bit dreamy. At this time, the Jets only have $10 million in cap space according to OverTheCap.com. Yes, there will be some salary-cap gymnastics done in order to free up more space but how much would they need to add Forte?

Jets | New York has questions at running back    Mon Feb 1, 04:41 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent RBs Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell and Stevan Ridley will all be unrestricted free agents this offseason if they are not re-signed.

Footballguys view: The Jets won't have enough money to keep them all--if any. Powell seems to be a favorite of the coaching staff, and he might be the easiest to re-sign.

Jets | Chris Ivory unlikely to return?    Mon Feb 1, 01:22 PM

New York Jets impending unrestricted free-agent RB Chris Ivory is likely to sign elsewhere this offseason. Although he racked up an AFC-best 1,070 rushing yards in 2015, he'll be 28 next month, he declined late in the season, and the Jets salary cap situation is tight. New York has seven starters headed to free agency, and they have only $14 million projected in salary cap space.

Footballguys view: We've commented on Ivory's potential departure before. The team doesn't have much room right now, but there will be some salary-cap gymnastics done in order to free up more space. That could be enough to keep Ivory in the fold. The market for running backs is going to be jam-packed in free agency, and that may keep prices (at that position) down.

Jets | Scott Chandler could interest Jets    Sat Jan 30, 05:58 PM

New England Patriots TE Scott Chandler could interest the New York Jets if he's cut as he put up good numbers with QB Ryan Fitzpatrick and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey with the Buffalo Bills.

Footballguys view: The Jets have to find better answers at the tight end position. Guys like Jace Amaro and Zach Sudfeld aren't the answer, but a guy like Chandler could be. Chandler has a big frame and can box out smaller defenders for the football. We'll see if he's available this offseason.

Jets | Chris Ivory wants to stay with Jets    Fri Jan 29, 08:05 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent RB Chris Ivory said he would like to re-sign with the Jets but is not sure if the team will have the salary cap space to bring him back.

Footballguys view: At this time, (according to OverTheCap.com) the Jets have $10 million in cap space in 2016. That's not much, so expect the team to re-work some deals or cut certain players to clear some cap space. Ivory is going to face a free agent market chock full of good running backs. We have a feeling the Jets will be able to work something out with him.

Jets | Ray Rice not on radar of NYJ    Fri Jan 22, 10:20 PM

Free-agent RB Ray Rice is not on the New York Jets' radar, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan, but he admitted that discussions about Rice have taken place internally.

Footballguys view: Anything can happen, but we just don't see Rice playing in the NFL again. We'll see if a team wants to add him (and all that goes with that) later this offseason.

Jets | Sign Dominique Williams    Tue Jan 19, 05:22 PM

New York Jets RB Dominique Williams was signed to a Reserve/Futures contract Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Footballguys view: Williams was the Vikings leading rusher in the 2015 preseason, and he's an interesting prospect to watch in super deep dynasty leagues. Undrafted out of Wagner College in 2014, Wagner is an efficient runner with good field vision.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson needs six-month rehab    Thu Jan 14, 01:34 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) will need to rehab his broken leg for six months, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: The Jets will probably franchise Wilkerson but they're going to have to make some hard decisions about who to pay in defense.

Jets | New York wants to re-sign Ryan Fitzpatrick    Thu Jan 14, 12:58 PM

New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan said he's 'like very much' to re-sign QB Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason.

Footballguys view: After the season he had--even with the end being ugly--Fitzpatrick seemed to have the light go on. How much is the big question as Fitzpatrick has earned a big payday before and then fell apart. The Jets have to be cautious here but won't want to screw up an offense that was really effective when healthy. By the same point, there is a lot of talent on the defense they need to pay as well.

Jets | Chandler Worthy signs     Tue Jan 12, 04:40 PM

Free-agent WR Chandler Worthy (Texans) signed to a Reserve/Futures deal with the New York Jets Tuesday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Troy in 2015, Worthy is a super fast (4.3) receiver/return man who was actually active for three games with the Texans earlier this year. He's worth monitoring in super-deep dynasty leagues where return yardage is scored.

Jets | Sign Adrien Robinson     Mon Jan 11, 04:42 PM

Free-agent TE Adrien Robinson (Giants) was signed to a Reserve/Futures contract by the New York Jets Monday, Jan. 11.

Footballguys view: Robinson is a player to monitor in super-deep dynasty leagues. He's supremely athletic but has yet to put his game together as a football player.

Jets | Two signed to Reserve/Futures deals    Tue Jan 5, 05:44 PM

New York Jets TE Wes Saxton and WR Joe Anderson were signed to Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Footballguys view: Saxton was undrafted out of South Alabama in 2015, but he's a player to monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. He's incredibly athletic and can snare passes away from his body naturally with arms extended. Saxton isn't much of a blocker, but he can be dangerous as a receiver.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson has fractured fibula    Mon Jan 4, 03:18 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) suffered a fractured fibula in Week 17 against the Buffalo Bills, as opposed to a fractured tibia as originally reported by head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson is an impending free agent, but we can't imagine the Jets letting him walk. They could place the franchise tag on him and try to negotiate a long-term deal within the deadline. Wilkerson doesn't need to be rushed back during his lengthy recovery, but we feel he should be ready to go by the start of training camp.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick hopes to return    Mon Jan 4, 01:38 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said he hopes to re-sign with the Jets this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Jets need a QB of the future (unless they think Bryce Petty could be that guy), but bringing back Fitzpatrick only makes sense. He has thrived under OC Chan Gailey in two stops now in the NFL, and he could be a consistent starter while the next QB is groomed behind him.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson to undergo surgery    Mon Jan 4, 01:33 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) will undergo surgery in about a week to repair the broken leg he suffered during the team's Week 17 game.

Jets | Brandon Marshall surpasses 100-yard mark    Sun Jan 3, 05:46 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall caught eight passes for 126 yards and one touchdown against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Marshall has had one of the best years of his career on his fourth and likely last team. He will not be underestimated in 2016 drafts the way he was in 2015.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick has inconsistent outing    Sun Jan 3, 05:29 PM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick went 16-for-37 for 181 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions against the Buffalo Bills in Week 17. Fitzpatrick threw 31 touchdown passes this season, which set a franchise record.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick was a dud with the Jets season on the line. He still should command a good salary on the open market and likely enter next season as the team's starter. His career has been revived with Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Chan Gailey on his side.

The New York Jets have declared RB Bilal Powell, QB Bryce Petty, OL Dakota Dozier, CB Dee Milliner, S Dion Bailey, LB Josh Martin, LB Taiwan Z. Jones inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Chris Ivory will get the bulk of the work with Powell out and Stevan Ridley will pick up whatever slack is left as the Jets fight for a playoff berth.

Jets | Brandon Marshall surprised by success    Fri Jan 1, 09:24 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall has a career-high 13 touchdowns and recorded his record sixth 100-catch season in 2015, but he said he didn't expect to have as much success as he has had when he was traded to the Jets this past offseason.

Footballguys view: It has been a perfect match for Marshall and the Jets, and with a win over the Bills, it will lead to a playoff berth. If this late career kick continues, Marshall could get himself in Hall of Fame consideration in one of the best wide receiver eras in the league's history.

Jets | Bilal Powell questionable    Fri Jan 1, 01:33 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (ankle) didn't practice Friday, Jan. 1, and is questionable for Week 17.

Footballguys view: We don't expect Powell to play against the Bills, which could limit the offense a bit. Kendrell Thompkins might be asked to do more as the third receiver in a top-heavy pass offense. Chris Ivory becomes a better start if Powell is out.

Jets | Limited practice for Chris Ivory    Thu Dec 31, 02:53 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory (knee) put in a limited practice Thursday, Dec. 31, after sitting out Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: We think Ivory will be a decent RB2 start this week, though he has been banged up enough to think if the Jets get a big enough lead he'll be sat so he is ready for Wild Card weekend.

Jets | Quincy Enunwa, Kenbrell Thompkins practice    Thu Dec 31, 02:49 PM

New York Jets WRs Quincy Enunwa (neck) and Kenbrell Thompkins (quadriceps, shin) both practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Dec. 31.

Footballguys view: Both of these players are intriguing but neither can be reliable for fantasy. Worth watching, but far too deep in the progressions to be worth playing.

Jets | Eric Decker, Brandon Marshall practice    Thu Dec 31, 02:47 PM

New York Jets WRs Eric Decker (knee) and Brandon Marshall (ankle) practiced in full for the second straight day Thursday, Dec. 31.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick participating    Thu Dec 31, 01:33 PM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb, elbow, back) is practicing fully Thursday, Dec. 31.

Jets | Bilal Powell sits Thursday    Thu Dec 31, 01:32 PM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell (ankle) is out of practice Thursday, Dec. 31.

Footballguys view: We think this is just a rest day and expect Powell will be a solid Rb2 this weekend. Powell has been a huge factor for the Jets the last few weeks and is highly productive both on the ground and through the air. Both he and Ivory could be solid Rb2 plays, in fact, against a reeling Bills team with an under-performing defense.

Footballguys view: The veteran QB is fighting through the pain for his teammates as the Jets are looking to lock up a postseason ticket.
