Jets | NY attends Jameis Winston pro day    Tue Mar 31, 04:46 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston was watched by a heavy contingent from the New York Jets at his pro day Tuesday, March 31. Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan, head coach Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey were all in attendance Tuesday. Winston received mostly positive reviews from his workout, and he's expected to be off the board when the Jets pick in the first round. Winston left no doubt that he has a stronger arm than Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.

Footballguys view: The Jets would likely jump at the chance to select Winston, but he'll be off the board before they pick at sixth overall. We think the Buccaneers have locked in on Winston as their top target.

Jets | Matt Schaub drawing interest from Jets    Mon Mar 30, 11:23 PM

Free-agent QB Matt Schaub (Raiders) is drawing interest from the New York Jets, as well as the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens. According to a source, Schaub is expected to sign this week.

Footballguys view: Just what the Jets need, another quarterback who is not a good option as a starter. Schaub could be a nice backup somewhere, but with the Jets he might have a chance to start. Currently, Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick will compete for that right in 2015. The Jets might also have interest in Oregon QB Marcus Mariota in the 2015 NFL draft.

Jets | Erin Henderson to visit    Sun Mar 29, 06:53 PM

Free-agent LB Erin Henderson (Vikings) is scheduled to visit the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Henderson has two drunk driving arrests, and that could be giving teams pause when considering him as an offseason addition. If signed, Henderson would give the Jets veteran depth at the linebacker position.

Jets | Marcus Mariota in the mix for Jets?    Thu Mar 26, 05:58 PM

Former Oregon QB Marcus Mariota would be hard for the New York Jets to pass on if he were still available at the sixth overall pick, according to ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Mariota even makes it that far down the draft board. The Titans have interest with the second-overall pick, and there are a few teams behind the Jets that would like to trade up to get the Oregon passer.

Jets | Interested in Jason Trusnik    Wed Mar 25, 02:12 PM

Free-agent LB Jason Trusnik (Dolphins) is attracting interest from the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Trusnik is a two-down run-stuffer. Don't ask him to cover or rush the passer and he's fine.

Jets | Kellen Davis signed    Wed Mar 25, 12:06 PM

Free-agent TE Kellen Davis (Lions) signed a one-year deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, March 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Nothing to see here people. Davis will work as a blocking tight end behind Jace Amaro in 2015.

Jets | Kellen Davis visits    Tue Mar 24, 04:41 PM

Free-agent TE Kellen Davis (Lions) visited with the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Davis is a huge target, but he won't be much of a fantasy factor...no matter where he ends up signing.

Jets | HC confident in Brandon Marshall    Tue Mar 24, 01:40 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall could be in line for a breakout season in 2015, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said he thinks Marshall remains a 'top-flight receiver.' 'He understands the game. He's a student of the game. He understands when he has small guys on him. He can get vertical when he needs to get vertical. He's a sharp route runner. He has great hands. He knows how to block. He brings a work ethic and he brings a fire to us that we need on the other side of the ball,' Bowles said.

Footballguys view: We'll see how Marshall fits in with the Jets. Either Ryan Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith will be the team's starter (unless they draft Marcus Mariota), and that doesn't give us a ton of confidence in the passing game. Marshall should be considered a low-end WR2 with upside for fantasy owners.

Jets | Stephen Bowen signing    Tue Mar 24, 01:23 PM

Free-agent DE Stephen Bowen (Redskins) is signing an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Tuesday, March 24.

Footballguys view: Bowen gives the team valuable veteran depth at the position. He'll work as a reserve player up front.

Jets | Geno Smith to enter camp as starter    Tue Mar 24, 01:19 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith will be the starting quarterback ahead of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick entering training camp this summer, according to new head coach Todd Bowles. 'You can't have equal first-team reps with a quarterback,' Bowles said. 'Geno will start out taking them, but that doesn't mean that Ryan can't take his spot. If Ryan's playing better and performing better...' Bowles continues to say that it's too early to judge Smith off his tape alone.

Footballguys view: Smith ended the season on a hot streak with a big game against the Dolphins in Week 17. New Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey should be able to craft an offense that works towards Smith's strengths as a passer.

Jets | Marcus Mariota needs to develop    Mon Mar 23, 04:16 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota had an impressive college career, but he is behind New York Jets QB Geno Smith in his development by a significant margin, according to owner Woody Johnson.

Footballguys view: Mariota threw to largely wide open receivers in college at Oregon. He worked out of the shotgun, and Mariota rarely had to read defenses. Instead, he would throw to predetermined spots. He's a larger project than some think, and his upside is that of Alex Smith (Chiefs) in our eyes.

Jets | Spencer Paysinger visiting    Mon Mar 23, 01:24 PM

Free-agent LB Spencer Paysinger (Giants), who is not expected to re-sign with the New York Giants, is visiting with the New York Jets Monday, March 23, according to an NFL source.

Jets | Marcus Mariota to work out for NYJ    Sat Mar 21, 11:34 AM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to have a private workout with the New York Jets March 28. General manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles will attend the workout.

Footballguys view: The Jets have the sixth-overall pick, and they'll be in the market for Mariota. They currently have Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick at the position, but they may see Mariota as a long-term answer.

Jets | Kevin Vickerson agrees    Fri Mar 20, 05:51 PM

Free-agent DT Kevin Vickerson (Chiefs) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Friday, March 20.

Footballguys view: It's a depth move for the Jets. Vickerson can play tackle or end, and he's a disruptive player inside. He'll work well in a rotation on the defensive line.

Jets | NYJ comfortable with QBs    Thu Mar 19, 03:36 PM

New York Jets QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith are expected to compete for the starting job during training camp, and general manager Mike Maccagnan said the team is comfortable with them as their top two quarterbacks.

Footballguys view: They sort of have to be since there are no better options available in free agency and they could miss out on one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft - both of whom carry risk anyway. Fitzgerald is a decent short-term option while Smith has shown he can win a lot - at the end of a season. Unfortunately for the Jets, so far he plays badly enough early that winning at the end doesn't mean anything. We'll see if new OC Chan Gailey can light a spark.

Jets | No official visit for Osi Umenyiora    Thu Mar 19, 02:33 PM

Free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) didn't have an official visit with the New York Jets Wednesday, March 18, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan. Umenyiora was only visiting to say hi to new head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Jets fans were hoping for a little schadenfreude if they stole a Giants player, even one who the team didn't keep last off-season. Alas, that seems as if it won't happen this time.

Jets | NY to attend Jameis Winston's pro day    Thu Mar 19, 01:20 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston will have his school's pro day later this month attended by the New York Jets and general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: The Jets will look at Winston because you never know what will happen at the top of the draft. Just because Tampa Bay implies they like him doesn't mean anything - it is, after all almost 'smokescreen month' aka April. They'll do their due diligence and make sure that 1) he's what he appears to be on film and 2) is not the chucklehead his off-field issues make him out to be.

  Jets | Michael Vick won't be re-signed    Thu Mar 19, 01:17 PM

Free-agent QB Michael Vick (Jets) won't be re-signed by the New York Jets this offseason.

Footballguys view: With Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick and a likely rookie quarterback, it's no shock Vick is gone. Especially since he was unprepared whenever it seemed his number was called. Can he find a new landing spot? It's hard to see after he looked like he cashed out halfway through last season. Although it was the Jets and a terrible Jets team at that - so maybe we shouldn't be too hard on him.

Jets | James Brewer agrees to terms    Thu Mar 19, 11:33 AM

Free-agent OT James Brewer (Giants) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the New York Jets Thursday, March 19, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Jets are looking to add depth and that's really all Brewer is right now. Despite the problems the Giants had on the offensive line in 2014, Brewer only played in two games last season. He started eight games in 2013 and didn't look special. Maybe he gets a chance with the Jets given he can play guard or tackle and they need the bodies. But he's yet to show anything remarkable.

Jets | Marcus Mariota an option for Jets    Thu Mar 19, 11:16 AM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota has not been ruled out as an option for the New York Jets first-round draft choice, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: BREAKING: WATER IS WET. Given Geno Smith is Geno Smith and Ryan Fitzpatrick may not be able to play until training camp or preseason, everything should be an option for the Jets at quarterback. The only issue might be Tennessee, who can trade out for another team coveting Mariota or the Titans themselves might select him. Keep in mind, even if he becomes a Jet, Mariota may be best served sitting for a year.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick will be ready for camp    Thu Mar 19, 11:12 AM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (leg) will be limited during offseason workouts but will be ready for the start of training camp, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Footballguys view: That's good, and as he knows Chan Gailey's offense well, it shouldn't be a big deal. He's not the long-term answer for the Jets but he could stand in for Marcus Mariota or another rookie quarterback while that guy gets his feet wet.

Link to story

Jets | Osi Umenyiora visits    Wed Mar 18, 07:50 PM

Free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) made a visit to the New York Jets Wednesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: Umenyiora is no longer the player he used to be, and his last double-digit sack season was 2010. He's played the last two years for the Falcons, and Umenyiora only had 2.5 sacks in 2014. If the Jets add him, Umenyiora would likely only be a part-time pass-rusher.

Jets | NY to visit with Denarius Moore    Wed Mar 18, 05:43 PM

Free-agent WR Denarius Moore (Raiders) is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets Thursday, March 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Even though the Jets traded for WR Brandon Marshall, they're still looking for help at the position. The Jets are looking for another speedy wide receiver to round out their depth. Moore has the talent, but injuries and inconsistencies have held his pro career back.

Jets | Antonio Cromartie says he's healthy    Wed Mar 18, 01:35 PM

New York Jets CB Antonio Cromartie (hip) said he feels fine physically and can still play at a high level in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Jets. Cromartie wasn't himself in 2013, and the team decided to release him after that season. He went to Arizona last year, stayed healthy and got his career back on track. Cromartie is part of an impressive secondary the Jets have put together this offseason. He joins Darrelle Revis, Buster Skrine and Marcus Gilchrist to give the Jets quite the collection of corners.

Jets | Lawrence Guy to visit NYJ    Tue Mar 17, 11:48 PM

Free-agent DL Lawrence Guy (Ravens) is scheduled to visit the New York Jets Thursday, March 19, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Guy played for both the Chargers and the Ravens last year. If added by the Jets, he would serve as a backup defensive end behind Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson.

Jets | Stevie Johnson pursued by Jets?    Mon Mar 16, 09:30 PM

Free-agent WR Stevie Johnson has been pursued by the New York Jets, but the interest is not mutual, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a northern California guy, and he may not want to set up shop on the East coast. The Jets traded for Brandon Marshall, but they're not done adding talent at the wide receiver position.

Jets | Jets close to signing Marcus Gilchrist    Thu Mar 12, 11:15 PM

Free-agent FS Marcus Gilchrist (Chargers) is finalizing a four-year deal with the New York Jets, and he is expected to sign Friday, March 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jets have done an "extreme" makeover to their secondary this offseason. Gilchrist joins Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine as players added to the position. Gilchrist played over 900 defensive snaps in 2014 at multiple positions. He finished the season with 76 tackles, 1 interception, 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles. Gilchrist played 401 of those snaps in the slot, 306 at strong safety and 201 at free safety, and his position versatility will come in handy for the Jets.

Jets | Antonio Cromartie back to Jets    Thu Mar 12, 02:56 PM

Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie (Cardinals) reached an undisclosed agreement with the New York Jets Thursday, March 12, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Almost the whole band is back together but without it's lead singer. Rex Ryan has to be throwing things up in Buffalo as both Cromartie and Darrelle Revis were guys he wanted back last season before John Idzik shut him down. Expect the Jets to go with 3 cornerbacks frequently as Buster Skrine gets the third spot. Dee Milliner will probably see rotation time, but the Jets will probably keep him due to Cromartie's advancing age and Revis' penchant for wanting a new contract after his guaranteed money is done.

Jets | Re-sign Willie Colon     Thu Mar 12, 11:57 AM

The New York Jets re-signed OG Willie Colon to a one-year contract at the veterans minimum Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: The Jets are beefing up with offensive line. They're keeping Colon, a starter in each game for them over the last two years. They also added James Carpenter in free agency. We like these moves...now if they could get their quarterback situation figured out.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to start    Thu Mar 12, 10:53 AM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to be the starter in 2015, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Let's get to training camp at least before we start putting Fitzpatrick in as the top guy. Geno Smith could work well under the super creative guidance of new Jets OC Chan Gailey. We imagine there will be some form of competition this offseason for the starting job.

Jets | Front-runners for Antonio Cromartie    Wed Mar 11, 12:04 PM

Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie (Cardinals) has a clear front-runner for his services in the New York Jets, and he's expected to sign with them. CB Darrelle Revis has been recruiting Cromartie.

Footballguys view: Cromartie and Revis together can accentuate each other's strengths and help a Jets defense that lacks a great edge rusher. The teams seems to be getting out of the malaise they were left in at the end of the Idzik/Ryan era.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick traded to Jets    Wed Mar 11, 11:54 AM

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick likely headed to Jets    Wed Mar 11, 10:51 AM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is likely to be traded to the New York Jets after the Texans formally sign QB Brian Hoyer (Browns).

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick has had success with Chan Gailey in the past, and the Jets have some weapons for him to work with. Whether its Fitzpatrick or Geno Smith opening the season as the Jets QB, Gailey's history makes the winner worth considering at times in a streaming QB approach because of Gailey's ability to make Kordell Stewart and Tyler Thigpen into viable QBs in the past.

Jets | Darrelle Revis agrees to terms    Tue Mar 10, 08:51 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Patriots) has agreed to terms with the New York Jets. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The contract will make him the richest cornerback in NFL history. Revis always commands big money when he's on the open market, but his play backs up his price tag. He returns to the Jets to give them a big-play corner in the secondary.

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick high on Jets' list    Tue Mar 10, 12:25 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is high on the New York Jets' wish list. The Texans are expected to cut him if a trade can't be consummated.

Footballguys view: The Jets have lost out on Brian Hoyer as it looks like he's going to Houston. Fitzpatrick gives them veteran depth, and he'd be able to push Geno Smith for the starting job.

Jets | Shane Vereen perks Jets' interest    Tue Mar 10, 12:18 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent RB Shane Vereen is of interest to the New York Jets if he hits the open market Tuesday, March 10. The Jets have inquired about Vereen already.

Footballguys view: Vereen is getting interest from both the Jets and the Giants this offseason. He never really played up to his potential with the Patriots, and Vereen is likely best served as a reserve runner and change-of-pace back.

Jets | Expected to sign James Carpenter    Tue Mar 10, 11:37 AM

Impending free-agent OG James Carpenter is expected to sign a four year contract with the New York Jets worth about $5 million per year.

Footballguys view: Carpenter failed as a tackle for the Seahawks, but he's turned into a pretty good guard in the NFL. The Jets are looking to upgrade their offensive line, and Carpenter would do just that.

Jets | Bilal Powell re-signs with Jets    Tue Mar 10, 11:36 AM

New York Jets RB Bilal Powell resigned with the team Tuesday, March 10, according to a league source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Some thought Powell was going to follow Rex Ryan to the Buffalo Bills. Instead, he stays with the Jets to be a reserve runner behind Chris Ivory. We expect the Jets to add at least one more running back through the draft or free agency.

Jets | Brandon Marshall passes physical    Tue Mar 10, 09:57 AM

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall passed his physical, and the trade sending him to the New York Jets will become official Tuesday, March 10.

Footballguys view: Marshall and Eric Decker (and Jace Amaro) should be able to help young quarterback Geno Smith. You know what else will help? New offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. He's one of the most creative minds in the game, and he should be able to craft an offense that works to Smith's strengths.
