Jets | New York still committed to Geno Smith    Wed Feb 25, 01:59 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith may not have big competition for the starting quarterback job, because the team is not committed to selecting a quarterback with the sixth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. The Jets are committed to make Smith a successful starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Jets could pass on Marcus Mariota (Oregon) if he's on the board at the time they are on the clock at sixth overall. Smith finished the season strong with a 300-yard game against the Dolphins in Week 17. The team might be willing to see if he can carry over that momentum.

Jets | Interest in Byron Maxwell    Wed Feb 25, 07:30 AM

Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) is expected to have the New York Jets among the primary teams interested in him.

Footballguys view: Maxwell is going to generate quite a bit of interest on the open market. Earlier reports have the Eagles as the frontrunner for his services. However, the Jets need to make a move at the CB position, and Maxwell might be their guy...stay tuned.

Jets | C.J. Spiller fond of Jets    Tue Feb 24, 06:17 PM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent RB C.J. Spiller made it very clear that he's a fan of Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Gailey coached Spiller from 2010 to 2012 with the Bills. 'His offense is going to be very creative,' Spiller said. 'He's going put his players in the best situations to win matchups. Just a humble guy. First class. Goes about his business the right way. He's going to treat his men like men.' The Jets have a hole at running back with RBs Chris Johnson gone and Bilal Powell poised to leave.

Footballguys view: Spiller is a talented player, but he needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential as a pro. We respect Gailey for the brilliant offensive mind he is. His addition should help the entire offense play better in 2015.

Jets | Hope to turn Geno Smith into winner    Wed Feb 18, 11:16 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith might soon have company despite the fact general manager Mike Maccagnan said the team is 'committed' to trying to turn Smith into a winning quarterback. The team met with free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Footballguys view: Hope all you want, Smith needs to show better consistency as a starter. He ended the season on a hot note with a 300-yard game against the Dolphins in Week 17, and Smith needs to carry that momentum over to this year.

Jets | Dee Milliner not expected until summer    Wed Feb 18, 11:16 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets CB Dee Milliner (Achilles') might not be ready until early summer. The team sounds as if they will use the worst-case scenario as a guide as they venture into free agency. They're not counting on Milliner to be 100 percent.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation. Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, but it's still a serious injury. When asked, both head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan identified cornerback as one of the team's most pressing needs.

Jets | Josh McCown meets with Jets    Wed Feb 18, 06:40 PM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) met with the New York Jets Wednesday, Feb. 18, at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: The Jets have said they are not ready to give up on QB Geno Smith, but are also exploring options at the position, including interviewing QBs Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota this week.

Jets | New York to talk with Jameis Winston    Wed Feb 18, 03:03 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets during the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: The Jets are wise to look at quarterbacks this year, but they'll be lucky to see Winston fall to them. They own the sixth-overall pick, but Winston may go off the board at number one to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets during the NFL Scouting Combine.

Jets | Dee Milliner injury update    Wed Feb 18, 02:55 PM

New York Jets CB Dee Milliner's (Achilles') status for the spring practices is still up in the air at this point, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said it is too early tell if Milliner will be ready by the spring.

Impending free-agent LB David Harris would like to be re-signed by the New York Jets this offseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Jets | Sam Bradford on radar?     Tue Feb 17, 02:10 AM

St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford is being watched by the New York Jets. Bradford has one year left on his contract with the Rams and carries a $16.58 million hit to the salary cap.

Footballguys view: Oh the Jets are just being the Jets here. They certainly need to add competition at the quarterback position, but they could do better than Bradford. The Jets cannot touch Bradford unless St. Louis cuts him and lets him hit free agency. Bradford is a good quarterback when healthy, and he's rarely healthy.

Jets | Chris Johnson expected bigger role    Mon Feb 16, 06:24 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) said he expected to have a bigger role with the New York Jets this past season but saw his playing time decrease as the season went on. Johnson said he sat down with former head coach Rex Ryan to talk about his role with the team but was never given the chance to show his talent.

Footballguys view: Johnson should not have expected a larger role at this point in his career. He's not the same player he once was, and the Jets were wise to use Chris Ivory and Johnson in a RBBC. The free-agent market if chock full of running back talent, plus this is a great class of running backs in the draft. The market for Johnson's services may not be that hot.

Jets | Chris Johnson leaving helps salary cap    Sat Feb 14, 03:06 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson's option not being exercised will save the team $3.5 million in salary cap space, adding to the $45-50 million they have already.

Footballguys view: The Jets are going to have a ton of money to spend on free agents this offseason. That should help them find the best available talent on both sides of the ball. Too bad they still have a huge question mark at the quarterback position.

Jets | Chris Johnson to hit free agency    Sat Feb 14, 02:36 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson's option will not be exercised, as expected. Johnson will become a free agent.

Footballguys view: This move comes as no surprise. The Jets are wise to let Johnson move on after struggling through a disappointing 2014. Johnson is not the same player he used to be, but there should be a few teams willing to give him a look as a change-of-pace back.

Jets | Josh McCown on the Jets radar?    Thu Feb 12, 01:36 PM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) may be an attractive depth target for the New York Jets to compete with QB Geno Smith for the starting job, in the opinion of New York Post writer Bart Hubbuch. It is unclear if the Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan and head coach Todd Bowles are as high on McCown as former Jets general manager John Idzik and former head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. The Jets will be looking for help at the quarterback position as they want competition for Geno Smith. McCown is a solid veteran, but we're not sure he would beat out Smith at this point in his career.

Jets | Percy Harvin expected to be cut    Wed Feb 11, 10:26 AM

New York Jets WR Percy Harvin is expected to be cut by March 19, in the opinion of ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini. Harvin has a $10.5 million cap number for 2015, and the team would owe the Seattle Seahawks a fourth-round pick if he's on the roster after that date.

Footballguys view: Everyone has seen this move coming. His injuries--and his attitude--may keep the market cool for his services when Harvin hits free agency.

Jets | Curtis Brown signs    Tue Feb 10, 04:31 PM

Free-agent CB Curtis Brown (Steelers) has signed with the New York Jets Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Footballguys view: Brown was a third-round pick for the Steelers in the 2011 NFL draft. He was out of football in 2015 after getting released by the Steelers last March. Brown spent time recovering from a torn ACL, and now he gets a fresh start with the Jets.

Jets | Interested in Ryan Fitzpatrick?    Mon Feb 9, 04:10 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick could draw interest from the New York Jets this offseason if he becomes available, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Alrighty then. The Jets have one of the worst QB situations in the league, and adding Fitzpatrick represents little--if any--upgrade over Geno Smith. The team wants to bring in competition for Smith, but Fitzpatrick is more journeyman starter level than he is any sort of starter with upside.

Jets | QB situation still unknown in NY    Sat Jan 31, 01:00 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he still hasn't received a definitive answer from head coach Todd Bowles on the team's quarterback situation.

Footballguys view: Michael Vick is set to be an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins in March. Geno Smith is still under contract, and he finished off 2014 with an amazing 358-yard performance (with three touchdowns) against the Dolphins in Week 17. Matt Simms and G.J. Kinne are still kicking around on the roster as well. Arguably the best free agent QB is Mark Sanchez (Eagles), and it would be unlikely to see him come back. The Jets have the 6th overall pick in the draft, and they could see a guy like Marcus Mariota (Oregon) or Jameis Winston (Florida State) fall to that spot--if they're lucky. Obviously, stay tuned.

Jets | Geno Smith shows promise    Thu Jan 22, 05:28 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith has a lot of talent and promise, according to new head coach Todd Bowles. At the same time, Bowles acknowledged that the quarterback position is currently an open slate, with Smith and Matt Simms the only quarterbacks currently rostered.

Footballguys view: Smith had an up-and-down 2014, but he's getting a fresh start with Bowles. He did finish the season strong with a 358-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Dolphins. We'll see if Smith can hang onto the starting job and take that next step in 2015.

Jets | Chan Gailey is new offensive coordinator    Tue Jan 20, 06:56 PM

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey has been named the new offensive coordinator of the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Gailey has always been a creative coordinator. We're expecting more of the same now that he's with the Jets. His hiring is a good sign for a young, athletic quarterback like Geno Smith.

Jets | Antonio Cromartie open to joining team    Sat Jan 17, 11:18 AM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie said he would be open to signing with the New York Jets if he hits the free-agent market this offseason.

Footballguys view: Cromartie could go back to the Jets this offseason. He was a standout player with them from 2010-13. The Jets could certainly use all the help they can get in the secondary.

Jets | Chris Johnson expected to be released    Fri Jan 16, 07:11 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson, who had just 663 rushing yards this year, is expected to be released this offseason. Johnson is due to make $4 million in 2015.

Footballguys view: Johnson has a base salary of $3.5 million, a bonus of $1.5 million and an option bonus of $250,000 due in 2015. At this point in his career, the Jets are unlikely to pay that kind of money for his services.

Jets | C.J. Spiller an option for Jets?    Fri Jan 16, 07:08 PM

Buffalo Bills RB C.J. Spiller, who will be a free agent this offseason, could be eyeing a move to the New York Jets, where he could be reunited with his former offensive coordinator in Chan Gailey. "There is that familiarity between me and him in that offense," Spiller said. "So that would be a perfect match. Who knows what can happen, but I'd be foolish not to have those guys on my list. I had my best years in the league with Chan. So it'd be dumb not to give it serious thought."

Footballguys view: Spiller had 1,703 total yards, eight touchdowns and 43 catches in 2012 with Gailey. The Jets have Bilal Powell as an undrafted free agent in 2015, but Chris Johnson is no lock to make it through cuts. His salary cap hit is $5.2 million this year with around $1.7 million in dead money. Spiller could be had for a decent price on the open market this offseason.

Jets | Todd Bowles hired by Jets    Tue Jan 13, 11:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles will be hired by the New York Jets for their head coaching position, a source involved in the process said Tuesday, Jan. 13. He is expected to officially sign a four-year deal Wednesday, Jan. 14.

Footballguys view: Bowles has been seen as deserving of a head coaching opportunity by many for a long time. He kept the Cardinals defense at a high level of play despite injuries and personnel losses in 2014. Jets fans should be excited about this hire, and Falcons fans should be sad that they missed out on yet another target this offseason.

Jets | Chan Gailey to be OC for Jets    Tue Jan 13, 11:44 PM

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey is expected to be the offensive coordinator with the New York Jets on the new staff of head coach Todd Bowles, a source said.

Footballguys view: Gailey has been good at meeting QBs halfway to make them viable during his career, including getting a great season out of Kordell Stewart in 1997 and making Tyler Thigpen look like an NFL starter in 2008. He's a good fit for a team without a long-term starting QB.

Jets | Doug Marrone's interview doesn't go well    Mon Jan 5, 07:11 PM

Former Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone's interview for the New York Jets' head coaching position reportedly didn't go very well, which could leave Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as the leading candidate.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. About 24 hours ago, it seemed like Marrone was the frontrunner to land the Jets job. Now, the team could choose to go in a different direction. Stay tuned.

Jets | Doug Marrone a done deal?     Mon Jan 5, 03:01 AM

No announcements have been made, but signs are pointing to former Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone becoming the next head coach of the New York Jets. Many candidates being interviewed for the general manager job have ties to Marrone, including the Houston Texans' Mike Maccagnan. Maccagnan signed Marrone to quarterback the London Monarchs in 1991 in the now-defunct World League of American Football.

Footballguys view: It seems like Marrone is their guy, although the coaching search is not over. Marrone opted out of his deal with the Bills, but he could be staying in the division. If Marrone is hired by the Jets, that will only add more fuel to the division rivalry with the Bills.

Jets | Sign three to Reserves/Futures contracts    Tue Dec 30, 04:45 PM

The New York Jets signed RB Daryl Richardson, P Jake Schum and PK Andrew Furney to Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: In super super deep dynasty leagues it's not yet time to give up on Richardson (although it's close). The speed back could still make some plays for the Jets if called upon.

Jets | Geno Smith makes impression on owner    Mon Dec 29, 02:26 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith made a strong impression on the team's owner with his stellar Week 17 performance against the Miami Dolphins. 'I think he's a young quarterback who in the last five games has gotten much, much better. ...I've got confidence in Geno. I really think he can be good.'

Footballguys view: Smith had a perfect passer rating against the Dolphins. He made a positive impression, but we still think the Jets could be looking for additional quarterback competition for 2015.

Jets | Reaching out to Jim Harbaugh    Mon Dec 29, 12:55 PM

Free-agent head coach Jim Harbaugh (49ers) has been contacted by the New York Jets about their head coaching position, according to a source. Harbaugh is expected to take the head coaching position at the University of Michigan.

Footballguys view: Can't blame them for trying. It seems like Harbaugh to Michigan is just too good for the coach to pass up.

Jets | Rex Ryan, John Idzik canned    Mon Dec 29, 08:42 AM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik have been fired Monday, Dec. 29.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Ryan's time with the Jets was a fun ride, full of twists, turns, winning and losing. We feel Ryan is best suited as a defensive coordinator, as he failed to develop offensive talent during his time in New York. However, now that he's been fired, Ryan could get some interest as a head coach by teams looking for a new top guy.

Jets | Geno Smith has career day    Sun Dec 28, 04:20 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith set a career high in passing yards (358) and tied his personal best of 3 touchdown passes in a single game with his performance in Week 17 versus the Miami Dolphins.

Footballguys view: Smith is going to be vying to make an impression on a new head coach. He is guaranteed nothing with the new regime, but he at least showed what he is capable of with Eric Decker in this season finale. The Jets will have a top six pick and shot at a top quarterback in the draft.

Jets | Eric Decker has monster game    Sun Dec 28, 04:10 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker recorded 10 receptions for 221 yards and a touchdown versus the Miami Dolphins in Week 17. He finished the year with 74 catches, 962 yards and 5 touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Decker was slowed by hamstring issues early and a dysfunctional Jets pass offense later on, but he finished with a bang and could be a good buy low in the offseason.
