Jets | Equal opportunity for Jets' quarterbacks    Tue May 23, 03:56 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg will be given equal first-team repetitions during organized team activities, according to offensive coordinator John Morton.

Footballguys view: McCown has the advantage from his playing experience, and he may win the job because of it. No matter who is the starting QB for the Jets, there is no fantasy value to be mined here.

Jets | Backfield committee to be used by Jets    Tue May 23, 02:31 PM

New York Jets RBs Matt Forte and Bilal Powell will serve as a two-man backfield committee this season, according to offensive coordinator John Morton. Morton added that the offensive gameplan will vary from week to week, but a timeshare is expected.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners were already expecting some form of split between Powell and Forte. The news has been cooked into their current average draft position. Powell sits at RB24 (6.02) while Forte is at RB40 (8.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Eric Decker going full speed    Tue May 23, 11:23 AM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker (hip, shoulder) is participating in passing drills full speed Tuesday, May 23.

Footballguys view: Decker is the best option the Jets have a wide receiver with Brandon Marshall (Giants) gone. This is good news about his health status, but with a bad QB situation we can only recommend Decker as a WR3 in fantasy leagues. His current ADP is WR37 (8.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg a bad fit?    Sun May 21, 08:14 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg is a bad fit for offensive coordinator John Morton's West Coast-style system, according to Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com. The system is built on timing and accuracy, and Cimini spoke with an opposing scout who said he was shocked at how off target many of Hackenberg's passes were in warmups last year.

Footballguys view: Hackenberg was not ready last year as a rookie, and that's why he didn't see the field as the Jets stumbled through Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty at the helm. He's got a chance this year, but with veteran Josh McCown in town it seems like he'll be playing second- or third-string at best.

Jets | Jordan Jenkins looking to improve    Sun May 21, 04:47 PM

New York Jets LB Jordan Jenkins has been working on improving his pass rush skills this offseason.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has been in Atlanta training with former NFL DE Chuck Smith this offseason. A run-stuffing linebacker, the Jets made Jenkins their third-round pick in 2016. He's only learning the nuances of rushing the passer but he has the heart and hustle to make a leap in 2017.

Jets | Brandon Shell in line to start    Sun May 21, 04:45 PM

New York Jets OT Brandon Shell is considered the leading candidate to start at right tackle but will have to compete with OT Brent Qvale for the job during training camp.

Jets | Lorenzo Mauldin drops weight    Sun May 21, 04:43 PM

New York Jets LB Lorenzo Mauldin has lost 10 pounds this offseason in hopes of regaining his rookie year agility.

Footballguys view: Mauldin was known as a productive hustle player and pass rusher coming out of Louisville as a third-round pick in 2015. In 20 games over the last two years (only seven in 2016), Mauldin has only 6.5 sacks and 33 total tackles.

Jets | Calvin Pryor could be on bubble    Sun May 21, 04:36 PM

New York Jets SS Calvin Pryor could be released before the 2017 season if FS Rontez Miles outperforms him during training camp, in the opinion of NJ.com's Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here with the selection of SS Jamal Adams (1st round) and S Marcus Maye (2nd round) in the 2017 NFL draft. Pryor's fifth-year option wasn't picked up this year, so he's set to be a free agent in 2018. He's no lock for the 53-man roster.

Jets | Jordan Leggett inks deal    Thu May 18, 01:17 PM

New York Jets TE Jordan Leggett signed his four-year rookie contract Thursday, May 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: In a deep tight end class, this is an interesting guy. Leggett has great size for the position and new offensive coordinator John Morton comes from an offense which uses the tight end a lot. Leggett walks into a potentially good position in terms of possible offense and overall skill. The problem is twofold, though. First, he can be lazy and doesn't seem to have a consistent motor. Secondly, there's a position - don't know if you've heard of it - called quarterback which the Jets are constantly having trouble with. Without that under-appreciated spot being locked down with a solid option, no tight end can be expected to have a big impact.

Jets | Bryce Petty ready to compete    Wed May 17, 03:19 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty said he is ready to compete with QBs Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg for the starting quarterback job and believes he can win the job.

Footballguys view: Petty's Madden Ultimate Team has over a 90 rating, and he just got the 99 OVR Tom Brady Cover Reveal card (just look it up on MUTHead.com). The guy who said he can get better playing football by playing Madden has a chance to win the starting job in 2017. Yes, that's the sad state of the Jets QB situation. Don't look for fantasy gold with this team at this position. No matter who wins the starting job, we won't be recommending them as anything more than a "you forgot to take your backup QB and now they're all gone" addition.

Jets | Chad Hansen contract details    Wed May 17, 03:17 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets WR Chad Hansen signed a four-year deal worth $2.819 million. The deal includes a $419,648 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: We wish the Jets had a better QB situation as Hansen is an interesting rookie to add in dynasty leagues. The Cal prospect reminded most in the scouting community of Allen Hurns (Jaguars) because of his size/speed combination. He should win the slot job behind outside starters Eric Decker and Quincy Enunwa in 2017.

Jets | Chad Hansen signs rookie contract    Tue May 16, 03:13 PM

New York Jets WR Chad Hansen signed his four-year rookie deal Tuesday, May 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hansen was a standout player for Cal in college, and he's one of the more interesting rookie WRs in this draft class. He reminds some in the scouting community of Allen Hurns (Jaguars) because of his strength and ability to catch contested passes. Hansen does a lot of the little things well like working the sidelines and coming back to the ball. He could become a favorite of any Jets quarterback early in his career.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg more comfortable    Mon May 15, 08:26 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg said he feels more comfortable entering his second season in the NFL and believes he has improved since his rookie season. Hackenberg is expected to compete for the starting job during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Jets selected Hackenberg in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft, but he couldn't do enough to see the field as a rookie. This year, Hackenberg is going to compete with Josh McCown and Bryce Petty for the starting job. He'd have to take a huge leap from year one to year two in order to win the job for Week 1. At some point, expect the Jets to take a look at him but don't expect him to blow the doors off the league.

Jets | Bryce Petty at full strength    Mon May 15, 12:45 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty (shoulder) said his surgically repaired left shoulder is at full strength, and he has been cleared to participate in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Petty is competing with Josh McCown and Christian Hackenberg to be the starting quarterback. Appearing in six games last year, Petty had only three touchdowns with seven interceptions. Unless he's made serious changes to his game, we don't see Petty beating out the veteran McCown for the top spot on the depth chart. Fantasy owners shouldn't be looking to this team for quarterback help.

Jets | Marcus Maye expected to start    Sun May 14, 04:14 PM

New York Jets S Marcus Maye is expected to be the starting free safety this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Florida this year, Maye mostly played free safety in college but he did also get snaps at slot corner. He's a rangy player with the athleticism to roam the back half of the field. Maye will team with fellow rookie Jamal Adams (2017 first-round pick) to be featured in the new-look Jets secondary.

Jets | Jamal Adams likely will be SS    Sun May 14, 04:06 PM

New York Jets S Jamal Adams is expected to be the starting strong safety this upcoming season and could be the defensive play caller depending on how he progresses.

Footballguys view: Adams can be an impact player for the Jets from day one. He's got an enforcer's mentality and is known as a leader who backs up his words with outstanding play on the field. Some in the scouting community have compared his skill set to that of former Cowboys great Darren Woodson.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson ready for 2017    Sat May 13, 09:54 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson said he has a chip on his shoulder heading into the 2017 season and wants to prove his struggles last year had nothing to do with the contract extension he signed.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson's struggles in 2016 (just 4.5 sacks) were likely due to him playing hurt...at least that's what Jets coach Todd Bowles believes was the case. If he can get back to his 2015 form (12 sacks), Wilkerson easily has Pro Bowl potential and can be one of the most impactful players on the Jets defense.

Jets | Stevan Ridley works out for Jets    Thu May 11, 01:29 PM

Free-agent RB Stevan Ridley (Falcons) worked out for the New York Jets Thursday, May 11, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Ridley has limited upside at this point, and has barely seen any action since he was in New England back in 2014. This would be his second tour with the Jets (he was with the Jets for a bit in 2015) but we're not interested if he joins that backfield with Matt Forte and Bilal Powell.

Jets | Quincy Enunwa may emerge as Jets' top option    Wed May 10, 11:23 PM

New York Jets WR Quincy Enunwa believes he's going to have 'an opportunity to do a lot more than he was able to do last year', and SNY's Ralph Vacchiano suggests the 24-year-old may be the team's top receiving option if WR Eric Decker can't make it all the way back from hip and shoulder surgery.

Footballguys view: Enunwa is the Jets top option in the passing game...not named Eric Decker. If Decker is limited by injury, then we could see more from Enunwa than expected. He presents a value play as a late-round pick in your fantasy drafts. Enunwa has a current ADP of WR72 (14.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | NYJ make roster moves    Sun May 7, 06:01 PM

The New York Jets have signed undrafted free-agent OT Chris Bordelon (Nicholls State) and OG Benjamin Braden (Michigan). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also released LS Zach Triner and OT Donald Hawkins.

Jets | Eric Decker release looking less likely    Sun May 7, 01:37 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker (hip, shoulder) is still a candidate to be a post-June 1 cut, but ESPN's Rich Cimini would be 'surprised' if the team ends up cutting him.

Footballguys view: Brandon Marshall is playing for the Giants this year, so Decker is going to be the top target for the Jets passing game. He's coming off hip and shoulder surgeries, but Decker should be good to go around training camp. Even in what should be a fairly anemic passing game, Decker has fantasy value as a WR3/flex option. His current ADP reflects the Jets potential offensive woes at WR36 (8.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Jamal Adams highly impressive    Sun May 7, 11:45 AM

New York Jets S Jamal Adams was the best player on the field - and it wasn't close - whenever he was on the field during rookie minicamp, according to NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes, who added the No. 6 overall pick's speed really stood out.

Footballguys view: Adams is one of the most impressive players in this class...both as a leader and a player. He's an enforcer who can roam the field and deal justice to opponents. Adams can make an immediate impact as a pro.

Jets | ArDarius Stewart makes early impression    Sun May 7, 11:38 AM

New York Jets rookie WR ArDarius Stewart had a good couple of days of practice and is the most pro-ready receiver of the wideouts who participated in rookie minicamp this week, according to NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: Stewart has a ton of fight in his game. He competes for everything...through the release, the route and the catch point. Stewart can work short routes and excel with his run-after-the-catch ability. However, he can also go long and track passes over his shoulder. Stewart is one of our favorite rookie WRs from this class, and he's drawn comparisons to Chris Hogan (Patriots).

Jets | Jordan Leggett a work in progress    Sun May 7, 11:23 AM

New York Jets TE Jordan Leggett 'needs some work,' according to NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes, who observed the rookie struggled with technique, route-running and drops in the two practices open to the media last week.

Footballguys view: Leggett had a nickname in college of 'Lazy Leggett' and has admitted to being lazy in the past. His motor needs work if he's going to pay off at the pro level. Leggett has great size (6'5" 258 pounds) and has played big in the brightest moments. He's got great upside in the NFL, but Leggett does need more work than some think.

Jets | ArDarius Stewart expects smooth transition    Sat May 6, 03:35 PM

New York Jets WR ArDarius Stewart said he does not expect a hard transition to the Jets offense because they run a similar West Coast-like offense that Southern California uses.

Jets | NYJ's new OC 'loves' tight ends    Sat May 6, 02:03 PM

New York Jets offensive coordinator John Morton reportedly told rookie TE Jordan Leggett he 'loves' tight ends and wants to make them a 'go-to guy' in his offense.

Footballguys view: The Jets were the worst in the league in 2016 when it came to utilizing the tight end. Their TE group finished last in targets, receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns at the position. Morton has a lot of 'loving' to do in order to get the Jets back to middle of the pack in this category.

Jets | NYJ signs two draft picks    Fri May 5, 05:18 PM

New York Jets sixth-round draft choices RB Elijah McGuire and CB Derrick Jones signed four-year contracts Friday, May 5. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: McGuire is an interesting change-of-pace back. He's more quick than fast, but he can make defenders miss in the open field. McGuire would best be used in a pass-catching fashion for the Jets offense.

Jets | Khiry Robinson trying out with Gang Green    Fri May 5, 01:04 PM

Free-agent RB Khiry Robinson (Jets) is participating in minicamp with the New York Jets on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: Robinson is back with the Jets after being released in March. He spent time with them last year in training camp, was let go, then returned for a one-game stint in December. He's broken his leg three times over the last two years, and those injuries have robbed him of chances to stick with a team. If healthy (big IF), Robinson has some power as an early-down runner.

Jets | McLeod Bethel-Thompson will try out for Jets    Thu May 4, 04:46 PM

Free-agent QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson (Eagles) will participate in the New York Jets' rookie minicamp Friday, May 5, on a non-roster tryout basis.

Footballguys view: It wouldn't shock anyone if he not only made the team but won the job considering how bad the selection there is. But that's more about how bad everyone else is versus how good this new addition could be. Fantasy owners are not going to be lining up around the block like it's the premiere of "The Last Jedi" when it comes to drafting a Jets quarterback in 2017.

Jets | Josh McCown expects competition    Wed May 3, 04:25 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown said he expects to compete with QBs Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty for the starting quarterback job.

Footballguys view: McCown has much more experience than the other two quarterbacks, but the veteran knows he must prove himself on the practice field if he wants the starting job. We're expecting the Jets to make more than one quarterback change regardless of who begins the season as the starter. They need to see what they have in Hackenberg, who failed to see the field last year as a rookie even though they selected him with a second-round pick.

Jets | Eric Decker expects to be ready for camp    Wed May 3, 12:05 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker (hip, shoulder) has been a full participant in the team's offseason conditioning program and will be ready to practice at the start of training camp in July.

Footballguys view: The Jets are going to take it easy on Decker before training camp starts. They have a bad QB situation...again...so having Decker near full strength is going to help out whatever poor passer they have lining up under center. Decker's fantasy value is that of a WR3/flex player in 2017, and his current ADP goes along with that notion (WR36, 8.01).

Jets | New York will have QB competition    Tue May 2, 07:56 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty will compete for the starting quarterback position this offseason, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Don't hold your breath here looking for fantasy value. McCown should have the leg up in this competition as he's the most experienced, but with the Jets you just never know how things are going to shake out. No matter who wins the job, fantasy owners will be looking elsewhere for help.

Jets | Calvin Pryor's option won't be picked up    Tue May 2, 08:31 AM

New York Jets S Calvin Pryor won't have his fifth-year option picked up for 2018, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here...especially considering the Jets added two safeties in the first two rounds of the 2017 NFL draft. There has been buzz about the Jets wanting to trade Pryor, but he's been a colossal bust and is unlikely to generate much (if any) interest.
