Jets | Geno Smith leading QB battle    Sun Aug 2, 07:05 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick have not thrown interceptions thus far in training camp, but Smith is still the leading candidate to open the year as the starter.

Footballguys view: Smith finished last year with a 358, three-touchdown performance against the Dolphins. This year, Smith will be working under new OC Chan Gailey and could work well in the spread system. Fitzpatrick had his best years under Gailey during their time together in Buffalo, and he's going to push Smith throughout training camp.

Jets | Devin Smith has punctured lung    Sat Aug 1, 05:58 PM

Updating a previous story, New York Jets WR Devin Smith (ribs) has a partially punctured lung to go along with broken ribs.

Footballguys view: Holy cow. The hits just keep on coming. Smith is going to be around two months.

Jets | Devin Smith still in hospital    Sat Aug 1, 04:47 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (ribs) was still in the hospital at the time practice started Saturday, Aug. 1. Head coach Todd Bowles said it was for precautionary reasons.

Jets | Devin Smith out 4-6 weeks    Sat Aug 1, 10:53 AM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (ribs) will be sidelined for four to six weeks because of his broken ribs, and his status for Week 1 is uncertain at this point.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the rookie here. Smith is speedy and can take the top off a defense, but he also has a history of getting banged up. We'll see if he's put on the PUP list to begin the year depending on how his recovery goes.

Jets | Devin Smith suffers broken ribs    Fri Jul 31, 09:28 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (ribs) will miss a majority of training camp after suffering broken ribs Friday, July 31, according to the team. He will be held at a hospital overnight for observation.

Footballguys view: Ouch. Bad news for the rookie trying to make an impression. It's also bad news for a guy who had a history of getting banged up. Rib injuries come with a lot of pain, and they can also have a lengthy recovery.

Jets | Devin Smith leaves practice    Fri Jul 31, 04:02 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith (head, neck) left practice early Friday, July 31, after suffering a possible head or neck injury.

Footballguys view: Smith is a speedy rookie who can take the top off the defense. He comes into the NFL with a history of getting banged up, and this latest injury isn't going to help his rise up the depth chart.

Jets | Geno Smith avoids mistakes    Thu Jul 30, 10:32 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith worked with the first-team offense and completed 12 of his 20 pass attempts with no interceptions Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: We believe in the Chan Gailey system. It will be interesting to see how Smith looks in training camp and the preseason this year. Fantasy owners should look at Smith like a QB3 who might be a nice waiver-wire addition if he starts playing better.

Jets | Jace Amaro quiet in drills    Thu Jul 30, 10:25 PM

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro had no reception in team drills Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Amaro is quite the athlete, and his skill set should be a nice fit in the Chan Gailey offense. He's a wait-and-see tight end for fantasy owners to consider.

Jets | Stevan Ridley placed on PUP list    Wed Jul 29, 06:17 PM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Ridley's knee injury is going to slow him down when he's activated for training camp. When fully healthy, Ridley has the talent and experience to push Chris Ivory for the starting job.

Jets | Dee Milliner cleared     Wed Jul 29, 06:11 PM

New York Jets CB Dee Milliner (Achilles') has been cleared to practice in training camp, but could be limited.

Footballguys view: Could be? More like "should be" limited. Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be, but the Jets will still be cautious with Milliner during his recovery. He's likely to be the fourth corner on the roster behind Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine.

Jets | Jace Amaro to be H-back    Wed Jul 29, 09:26 AM

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro will be used as an H-back, which might give him a bigger role in the offense than he had last season. Amaro struggled with drops last year.

Footballguys view: Amaro has interesting upside as a weapon for the Chan Gailey offense. His speed and ability to pull away from linebackers make him an interesting player to watch. We like him as a low-end TE2 with potential upside in 2015.

Jets | Geno Smith won't have long leash    Tue Jul 28, 07:45 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith could be benched if he struggles early in the season, according to head coach Todd Bowles Tuesday, July 28. 'If you feel that his position or any other position is hurting the team, as a head coach, it's up to you to do something about it,' Bowles said about Smith. 'It's not a year-long thing for anybody. You earn your keep by the week. You earn your keep by the day. ... If somebody is not doing their job, it's up to me to rectify the situation,' said Bowles.

Footballguys view: This should come as no surprise to anyone. Smith might be able to perform better under new OC Chan Gailey. However, if he struggles to produce then this team could go in a different direction. It's certainly worth noting that backup Ryan Fitzpatrick played the best football of his career when he was under offensive coordinator Chan Gailey in Buffalo.

Jets | Dee Milliner could begin on PUP    Tue Jul 28, 12:50 PM

New York Jets CB Dee Milliner (Achilles') could begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. The Jets received trade inquiries on him this offseason, but they're holding onto him for now.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, but the Jets are going to be cautious with Milliner as he comes back.

Jets | Brandon Marshall fears second-hand smoke    Tue Jul 28, 08:49 AM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall tweeted that he was in Jamaica for his sister's wedding, and he was worried the second-hand marijuana smoke could force him to fail a drug test. It's unclear how serious he was, but he can't be suspended for his first positive marijuana test under the league's substances of abuse policy.

Footballguys view: Unless someone was blowing smoke from a fattie-bo-battie blunt right into his nostrils, we can't imagine second-hand smoke showing up in a drug test. It's unusual that he would reveal something like that on social networking, but Marshall has always been a player that marches to the beat of his own steel drum.

Jets | Austin Hill signed    Mon Jul 27, 07:00 PM

Free-agent WR Austin Hill (Raiders) signed with the New York Jets Monday, July 27, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hill went undrafted out of the University of Arizona earlier this year. A big target at 6'3" 212 pounds, Hill suffered a knee injury in 2013 that slowed him down last season. If healthy, he's got the size to work well in the red zone. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should be watching him during the preseason.

Jets | Jace Amaro not used in red zone in 2014    Wed Jul 22, 01:44 PM

New York Jets TE Jace Amaro was targeted only nine times in the red zone last season. Amaro could be used more often in the red zone under offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Footballguys view: It would be a smart move for the Jets to use Amaro more when they're near pay dirt. Amaro has good size and the wingspan to pluck jump passes out of the air. He's a TE2 with upside for fantasy owners this year.

Jets | Brandon Marshall insults Jay Cutler    Sat Jul 18, 09:23 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said Thursday, July 16, that former QB Kyle Orton was the best quarterback he has played with in his career.

Footballguys view: Is it an insult for Cutler, or is it just the truth? Cutler has a rocket arm, but he hasn't taken to coaching well and he makes bad decisions with the football far too often. If Orton is the best QB Marshall has played with, then Geno Smith is going to seem like Joe Namath for the veteran receiver.

Jets | Chris Ivory to be more involved in offense?    Fri Jul 17, 03:22 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory was given fewer carries last year to limit the chances of getting injured. The Jets have a new coaching staff this year, however, and Ivory has been used more this offseason, particularly in the passing game.

Footballguys view: Ivory could be a nice RB3 for fantasy owners if he's able to hold onto the starting job. The Jets are going to give Stevan Ridley (knee) a chance to prove himself when healthy. Ivory's current ADP is RB39 (8.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Brandon Marshall closer to the end    Fri Jul 17, 08:50 AM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall posted on his Twitter page that the Jets are his last team.

Footballguys view: Marshall has talent--always has--but he's bounced around to several teams throughout his pro career. The Jets might be his final stop as teams seem tired of dealing with him.

Jets | Chris Ivory sees time at WR    Thu Jul 16, 12:14 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory lined up at wide receiver at times this offseason when the team worked out of a spread formation.

Footballguys view: The Jets are going to have an incredibly creative offense under new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. It's not a shock that they would move Ivory around the formation to create mismatches. His current ADP is RB40 (9.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Chris Ivory's workload has been limited    Thu Jul 16, 08:45 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory's workload was limited by the former Jets coaching staff because they were worried about him getting injured. Ivory has also struggled in pass blocking.

Footballguys view: Note that last sentence. Struggling in pass-protection means you're going to see Ivory as a two-down thumper. Stevan Ridley is going to make a strong push for the starting job when healthy. We might see Bilal Powell mixed in as the team's third-down back no matter who the starter is. Stay tuned.

Jets | No pressure for Geno Smith?    Sat Jul 4, 09:04 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he doesn't feel any pressure heading into training camp. 'I feel like we have a lot of room for improvement, but I love the way we're working and competing,' Smith said. 'To have guys around me that are so, so good, it takes all the pressure off of me.'

Footballguys view: Smith shouldn't feel any pressure because he is still slated to start despite playing among the worst ball of any QB in the league the last two years. With Brandon Marshall and Chan Gailey, Smith will be out of excuses if he can't get it together this year. Ryan Fitzpatrick, who had his best years with Gailey in Buffalo, is waiting in the wings if Smith falters.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson suspended four games    Thu Jul 2, 02:22 PM

New York Jets DT Sheldon Richardson has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on substances of abuse.

Footballguys view: Richardson has been a force on the Jets defensive line, and he would be more missed in September if the team didn't have Leonard Williams fall to them at #6. The Cleveland, Philadelphia, Miami, and Indianapolis offensive lines will still have their hands full in the first four weeks of the season.

Jets | Geno Smith to work out with teammates    Thu Jul 2, 01:14 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he will be working out with most of the offensive skill players in Chicago during the two weeks before the start of training camp. Smith said he expects to be the only quarterback at the workouts but that the other quarterbacks are welcome to attend.

Jets | No vacation for Geno Smith     Wed Jul 1, 10:00 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he is already focusing on preparing his body and mind for the regular season, and the next step is to work out with WR Brandon Marshall.

Footballguys view: Smith has the aggressive downfield throwing mindset that should work in new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey's offense, and Marshall, Eric Decker, and Jace Amaro will give him a great set of big targets. The Jets offense should be more viable than last year, even if Ryan Fitzpatrick (who had his best success with Gailey in Buffalo) has to take over at some point.

Jets | Vote of confidence for Geno Smith    Tue Jun 30, 02:42 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is improving year-by-year and has what it takes to be the quarterback of the future for the Jets, according to ESPN's Ron Jaworski. Jaworski said he has seen growth and improvement in Smith each year and that he just needs to perform on a consistent basis.

Footballguys view: Smith received a vote of confidence from the coaching staff earlier this year when OC Chan Gailey proclaimed that Smith was the starter. He finished last year with a bang (358 yards, three touchdowns), and Smith is hoping to carry that momentum over to this year. Gailey's spread concepts will help Smith look better, but he's nothing more than a low-end QB2 or QB3 for fantasy owners in 2015.

Jets | Brandon Marshall rejuvenated?    Mon Jun 29, 05:24 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall has been a positive influence since joining the Jets this offseason. Marshall has shown his athletic ability that has given him success in previous seasons and he has been a good teammate in the locker room as well. Additionally, Marshall has connections with new head coach Todd Bowles, who was part of the Dolphins' coaching staff when Marshall played in Miami.

Footballguys view: Marshall is on yet another team with the expectations of being the top receiver. He should provide Geno Smith with a quality veteran target in 2015, and fantasy owners should consider Marshall around where they always do. He's a WR2 with WR1 upside in certain matchups.

Jets | Devin Smith struggling to adjust    Sat Jun 27, 10:48 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith struggled to adjust to the multiple spots and routes he had to learn to run during offseason workouts, according to wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell.

Footballguys view: This isn't a huge shock, though the Jets are likely disappointed since they were thinking he might steal targets from Jeremy Kerley. This is why we don't bet on certain rookie wide receivers in fantasy football though - the learning curve is very steep even for the best of them. Right now we see Smith as no better than a WR6 and he's going undrafted according to recent ADP data.

Jets | TE Amaro not standing out    Sat Jun 27, 04:08 PM

Rich Cimini, from ESPN.com, reports that tight end Jace Amaro is not a player who has stood out with special qualities in practice. Cimini predicts that Amaro will get fewer than 60 catches in 2015.

Footballguys view: Amaro is your classic move tight end, but he's not a seam-ripper who flashes on film with incredible athleticism. Chan Gailey's offense should be able to use Amaro in the right way, but fantasy owners should only look at him as a low-end TE2.

Jets | Jeremy Kerley to return punts?    Sat Jun 27, 03:00 PM

New York Jets WR Jeremy Kerley is the favorite to be the punt returner for the Jets this season, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Kerley's receptions and receiving yards have dropped each of the last three seasons. With Brandon Marshall added to the passing game this offseason, Kerley's numbers will continue to be low. His main impact should come as a return man.

Jets | Chris Ivory leads backfield    Wed Jun 24, 10:35 AM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is listed as the starting running back entering training camp, according to beat writer Rich Cimini's unofficial depth chart. RB Bilal Powell is the primary backup, and RB Zac Stacy is listed as the third running back. RB Stevan Ridley (knee) could figure in eventually, but he's expected to be limited at the start of camp.

Footballguys view: We were all expecting Ivory to be the top guy...especially with Ridley banged up. What's interesting to note is that Stacy is third on the depth chart. We'll see if he can climb ahead of Powell when training camp starts.

Jets | Stevan Ridley could start on PUP    Sat Jun 20, 01:41 PM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) may begin the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list as he continues to recover from knee surgery, according to Dom Cosentino of NJ.com.

Footballguys view: If Ridley is not ready for training camp, the odds of him being placed on the PUP to start the season increase. If Week 1 rolls around and Ridley is on the PUP list, then he'll have to miss the first six weeks of the season. Chris Ivory and Zac Stacy are going to compete for the starting job in training camp.

Jets | Eric Decker happy with new role    Fri Jun 19, 09:37 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker has embraced his move to the No. 2 receiver behind WR Brandon Marshall, saying the arrangement 'will create more stress for the defense.'

Footballguys view: Decker is better as a WR2...he was with the Broncos behind Demaryius Thomas, and he'll be better opposite Brandon Marshall with the Jets. He'll see more single coverage, and he's got the ability to move the chains. We trust that OC Chan Gailey will be able to craft an offense that is good for QB Geno Smith. That should have a trickle down affect with Decker and the rest of the passing game.

Jets | Zach Sudfeld placed on IR    Wed Jun 17, 05:14 PM

New York Jets TE Zach Sudfeld (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, June 17, after being waived/injured Monday, June 15.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld's brief career in the NFL is likely over at this time. He wasn't a lock to make the final roster even if he was healthy, and a comeback may prove difficult.

Jets | Zach Sudfeld waived with settlement    Tue Jun 16, 12:21 AM

New York Jets TE Zach Sudfeld (knee) was waived/injured Monday, June 15, after suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during organized team activities (OTAs). The team signed TE Steve Maneri to take his roster spot.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld's career in the NFL is likely over. Maneri is merely a blocking tight end with no fantasy value.

New York Jets TE Zach Sudfeld (knee) was waived/injured Monday, June 15, with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Free-agent TE Steve Maneri (Patriots) was subsequently signed to an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: Remember when Sudfeld was a sleeper to some? Yeah, those days are over. The third-year UDFA's career is likely over. Maneri is a blocking tight end who will struggle to make the final roster.

Jets | Stevan Ridley's camp status uncertain    Sun Jun 14, 09:39 AM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) is not sure if he will be able to fully participate at the start of training camp. Ridley is he does not know if he will be 100% when camp starts and will not rush his rehab.

Footballguys view: The Jets should just take it easy on Ridley. They could put him on the PUP list to start camp, and they could activate him whenever he's ready. The plan is to have him near full strength by the time Week 1 of the regular season rolls around.

Jets | Geno Smith focused on improving    Sun Jun 14, 08:51 AM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is staying focused during organized team activities in the wake of comments made by OG Willie Colon that Smith 'can't crash the green-and-white Porsche in Florham Park.' Smith responded, "I think we all have to pull together and we all have to do our job," Smith said before a sharp practice on the second day of minicamp. 'That's the key thing. What (Colon) said was that we need to be on top our game. I need to be on top of my game . . . and I believe that that's true. What he said in that regard wasn't wrong,' said Smith.

Footballguys view: Smith ended the 2014 season on a high note with a 358-yard, three-touchdown performance against the Dolphins in Week 17. He's looking to carry that momentum over to this season. Working under new OC Chan Gailey, we're curious to see how much Smith can improve in 2015.

Jets | Brandon Marshall picked Geno Smith    Fri Jun 12, 10:23 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall picked the Jets as his favored landing spot during free agency because of how impressed he was with QB Geno Smith. 'I was really shocked at the intelligence, how smart he was,' Marshall said. 'I had known him as a player from afar. I didn't know his football IQ was so high. He had crazy passion.'

Footballguys view: Marshall learned of the Bears decision to move on from him, so he started calling quarterbacks on teams that could be trade partners. He was eventually traded to the Jets because he wanted to play with Smith. We'll see if Marshall's confidence pays off this season as the team's WR1.

Jets | Stevan Ridley confident     Fri Jun 12, 09:45 PM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) said his plan is to be a contributor by Week 1. 'I can't predict the future, but for me I've got to be ready for Week 1, and that's the goal,' Ridley said. 'When I do hit the field, I'm making an impact.'

Footballguys view: Ridley is currently coming back from ACL/MCL surgery he had about six months ago. There's no guarantee he'll be ready for Week 1 of the regular season. Putting Ridley on the PUP list to start the season is a distinct possibility.

Jets | Chris Ivory atop the depth chart    Fri Jun 12, 09:39 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is atop the depth chart for now, according to head coach Todd Bowles. 'There's Ivory, there's (Bilal) Powell,' Bowles said. '(Daryl) Richardson has been here, (Stevan) Ridley is not practicing, and (Zac) Stacy just got here. So, as Stacy gets to know his (assignments), it's Ivory, Powell, Richardson, Stacy, and of course Ridley isn't playing right now.'

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Ivory is a talented runner who can punish opposing defenses between the tackles. He can also break off big runs from time to time. He could be a value pick at RB41 (9.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. The Jets are going to have a balanced and creative offense under new OC Chan Gailey. If healthy, it wouldn't be a shock to see Ivory finish the season as a top-30 fantasy running back.

Jets | Zach Sudfeld injured    Thu Jun 11, 06:41 PM

New York Jets TE Zach Sudfeld (knee) injured his knee during minicamp Wednesday, June 10, on a collision with SS Calvin Pryor. Head coach Todd Bowles said he fears the injury may not be minor. Sudfeld underwent an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld has been a disappointment since he burst onto the scene ever-so-briefly with the Patriots. Buried behind Jace Amaro and Jeff Cumberland, he's not likely to get many reps. If he can get healthy again, he still won't amount to much on this Jets team and can be ignored in fantasy.

Jets | NY quarterbacks not impressing HC    Thu Jun 11, 06:24 PM

New York Jets QBs Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick and Bryce Petty didn't thrill head coach Todd Bowles with their play during minicamp. 'It's been up and down,' Bowles said of Smith's performances. 'He makes good throws, he makes some bad throws. There has to be more consistency for the quarterbacks overall.'

Footballguys view: It's one thing to say that about Bryce Petty (raw) and Ryan Fitzpatrick (himself) but Geno Smith cannot have 'inconsistent' used to label him. He needs to be on point if Smith wants to prove himself. He may have the starting job (per OC Chan Gailey) now but he's walking a very thin tightrope. From a fantasy standpoint, we'd avoid the Jets quarterbacks.

Jets | Devin Smith absent for all of minicamp    Thu Jun 11, 06:15 PM

New York Jets rookie WR Devin Smith (personal) missed all of minicamp with an excused absence. It was previously reported that Smith is an expectant father.

Footballguys view: Smith is going to have to fight for targets in a tight receiving corps. The rookie will start out behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, but likely also behind Jeremy Kerley until he catches up. With those three guys--plus Jace Amaro vying for attention--plus an uncertain quarterback situation, we'd avoid Smith in redraft leagues save as a very late-round flier.

Jets | Zach Sudfeld dealing with injury    Thu Jun 11, 12:52 PM

New York Jets TE Zach Sudfeld (knee) did not participate in practice Thursday, June 11, because of a knee injury. Head coach Todd Bowles said Sudfeld may be dealing with a serious injury and that he will undergo tests on the knee.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld was a hot commodity as an undrafted rookie with the Patriots in 2013, but he failed to pay off for anyone who grabbed him. He's behind Jace Amaro and Jeff Cumberland and mired in an offense with players like Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker as well. Sudfeld isn't helping himself by being hurt and his role in the offense, limited already, could dwindle even further.

Jets | Brandon Marshall sitting out    Thu Jun 11, 10:51 AM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall (toe) is out of practice Thursday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Marshall is currently going as a WR2 (around the fourth round) and part of that is the quarterback situation with the Jets. How good will Geno Smith be and how will that impact Marshall's numbers? Do remember though that Marshall has had a 1,000-yard season for every year he has played save his rookie year and in 2014 when he was hurt. He could pass that mark this year for the Jets as their top wideout.

Jets | Brandon Marshall leaves practice    Wed Jun 10, 05:40 PM
