Jets | Geno Smith draws more praise    Wed Jul 23, 05:17 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is 'head and shoulders' better than last year, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: We'll believe it when we see it. Smith is competing with veteran Michael Vick to be the team's starter in 2014. The second-year pro has the advantage, and he'll get every opportunity to win the job in camp. We'll see if added weapons on offense like Eric Decker and Chris Johnson help him in 2014.

Jets | No timetable for starting QB decision    Wed Jul 23, 05:15 PM

Updating an ongoing story, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he will not put a timetable on naming the starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: The team sees Geno Smith as the quarterback of the future, and they'd like him to win the job over veteran Michael Vick. If Smith struggles in camp or the preseason, they could turn to Vick because of his experience as a starter.

Jets | Chris Johnson won't be limited    Wed Jul 23, 05:04 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson (knee) will not be limited at the start of training camp, and he was 'flying' during his conditioning test, according to head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Jets and Johnson here. We'll see if Johnson is energized by a fresh start with his new team. Johnson is not the same player he used to be, and he's clearly lost a step in recent years. His current ADP is RB26 (5.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Jason Babin notes    Wed Jul 23, 04:14 PM

New York Jets DE/OLB Jason Babin played 68 percent of the defensive snaps for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013, logging 772 plays on the year. He was released and re-signed this offseason, only to be released again after the Jaguars paid him $500,000 in signing bonus money.

Jets | Jason Babin signs    Wed Jul 23, 11:56 AM

New York Jets signed DE Jason Babin (Jaguars) to a two-year contract, with the second year being a team option. He's expected to serve as a situational pass rusher.

Footballguys view: Babin's not the same player he used to be, but he can help the Jets as a part-time pass-rusher if healthy. In 16 games for the Jaguars last year, Babin compiled 40 tackles, three forced fumbles and 7.5 sacks.

Jets | Rex Ryan confident in Dee Milliner    Sun Jul 20, 11:39 PM

New York Jets CB Dee Milliner can become a shutdown corner in the NFL, according to head coach Rex Ryan. 'I think he's got a chance to be,' Ryan said. 'I don't think there's any doubt. But a lot of things can happen. A guy can get injured. A guy can do whatever where a guy gets derailed. But (I'm) saying that I'll be disappointed if he's not. Something like (injuries), in my opinion, would have to happen to him for him not to end up being that kind of player.'

Jets | Rex Ryan calls 2014 a transition year    Sat Jul 19, 09:49 AM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan thinks his team can do special things in 2014, but also called this season a transition year. Ryan understands people not seeing that right now. "What they're missing is -- and this isn't their fault -- is they don't see what I see in the building every day," Ryan said. "I think it's a transition year, but we're going to bring it to another level. I know where I want this team to go and that's where I expect this team to go. So, you know, are we a better team? Dang right. . . . That may be a fact that we're rebuilding this team, but by no means does that mean that I don't expect to improve on where we were."

Footballguys view: We'll call 2014 a make-or-break year for Ryan. He needs to win or else the team might look for a next coach next season. Ryan is putting his faith in either Geno Smith or Michael Vick as the starting quarterback--good luck with that.

Jets | Rex Ryan says Jets will make playoffs    Fri Jul 18, 01:58 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan recently said he's confident the team will make the playoffs this season, adding that another 8-8 record would be a disappointment.

Footballguys view: This could be it for Ryan. He's in a make-or-break season with the Jets. If they don't make the playoffs and have a disappointing year, then we could see Ryan get bounced.

Jets | Jacoby Ford the favorite for KR    Fri Jul 18, 09:49 AM

New York Jets WR Jacoby Ford is the favorite to win the kick returner spot over WR Clyde Gates.

Footballguys view: That makes Ford the favorite over Gates to make the final roster. They're likely competing for one spot, and the player who provides the most value on special teams will win.

Jets | Oday Aboushi could push for starting job    Thu Jul 17, 01:35 PM

New York Jets OG Oday Aboushi could compete for the starting left guard and right guard jobs during training camp. Aboushi worked at left guard with the first-team offense during offseason workouts, because OG Willie Colon (knee) had offseason knee surgery.

Jets | Teammates backing Geno Smith    Wed Jul 16, 02:03 PM

New York Jets WR David Nelson said his teammates believe this is QB Geno Smith's team and that QB Michael Vick is seen as the backup. 'For all of us, it's Geno's team," Nelson said. 'And from what we've been told and what we've been working toward, it's Geno's team, and Mike's coming in to kind of (fill) a supporting role. If anything happens to Geno, we have a proven starter and a proven winner backing him up. That's the direction we're moving.'

Footballguys view: Nelson is being a good teammate, but right now there is little clarity on who will be the starter for the Jets. Vick is not washed up, and he could easily beat out Smith for the top spot on the depth chart.

Jets | Three on the bubble    Wed Jul 16, 09:21 AM

New York Jets WRs Clyde Gates, Greg Salas and Quincy Enunwa are on the bubble for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: We like Gates the most out of these three, but even his dynasty value in super deep leagues is low. Gates has good straight-line speed and can be used as a return man in addition to giving the team veteran depth at wide receiver.

Jets | Daryl Richardson on the bubble    Mon Jul 14, 10:43 PM

New York Jets RB Daryl Richardson (toe) will have to regain the speed and explosiveness that he showed as a rookie in 2012 if he is going to make the roster, according ESPNNewYork.com's Rich Cimini. Richardson's 2013 season was ruined by a turf-toe injury.

Footballguys view: Richardson was the starter at the beginning of the season last year for the Rams. He couldn't stay healthy to impress, and now he gets a fresh start with a new team. Richardson gives the team another speed back behind Chris Johnson and Chris Ivory, but he'll have to contribute on special teams if he wants to make the 53-man roster.

Jets | Michael Vick will start according to former Jet    Mon Jul 14, 04:59 PM

New York Jets QB Michael Vick will be the team's opening-day starter, former Jets WR Plaxico Burress predicted Monday, July 14.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Burress is correct at the end of the preseason. Vick will compete with second-year pro Geno Smith for the starting job. He has the experience edge over Smith, but Vick will have to prove himself in camp. Smith was supposed to be the QB of the future when the team added him in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft.

Jets | Tajh Boyd adjusting to new offense    Fri Jul 11, 02:20 PM

New York Jets rookie QB Tajh Boyd acknowledged that the Jets' offense is completely different to that of Clemson's. Boyd said he's been working on footwork, reads and becoming more precise. Boyd added that he's doing everything he can to understand the offense, but knows it will take time.

Footballguys view: Boyd has a strong arm and the athleticism to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. To play up to his potential as a pro, Boyd needs to improve his accuracy and decision making under pressure. Being more comfortable in the offense will help him do that. He's an intriguing QB to monitor in deep dynasty leagues.

Jets | Calvin Pryor, Dawan Landry could start    Thu Jul 10, 08:08 PM

New York Jets S Calvin Pryor and SS Dawan Landry are projected as the team's starters, according to Darryl Slater of The Star-Ledger. Slater believes head coach Rex Ryan will want Landry to serve as a veteran presence alongside Pryor.

Footballguys view: It's a great combination for the Jets. We're excited about Pryor's upside in the pros. The rookie is an intimidating presence and he arrives at the play with natural violence. He can play close to the line of scrimmage, but Pryor can also turn to cover downfield.

Jets | Geno Smith has high expectations    Mon Jul 7, 04:29 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith said he likes the team's chances to make it to the Super Bowl this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Well at least Geno understands how to grab headlines in the largest media market in the US. While this is a bit over the top, it's not a bad thing for a quarterback to be publicly confident in his teammates, and the Jets were once just a few plays from the Super Bowl during the Rex Ryan era.

Jets | Oday Aboushi could work with starters at camp    Mon Jul 7, 04:20 PM

New York Jets OG Oday Aboushi could work with the starting offense at right guard when training camp begins if OG Willie Colon (knee) is not able to participate.

Jets | Three TEs to compete for one or two spots    Thu Jul 3, 05:44 PM

New York Jets TEs Zach Sudfeld, Chris Pantale and Colin Anderson will compete for one or two roster spots during training camp. It is not known if the team will keep three or four tight ends on their final roster.

Footballguys view: Sudfeld was a hot deal with the Patriots in training camp, but couldn't stick. He's got soft hands, decent speed and great size but isn't much of a blocker. Pantale was on the practice squad most of last season and didn't impress when he was moved up. Anderson is on a futures/reserve contract and is a pretty average small-school product. We think Sudfeld is the guy here, though he won't have any fantasy value unless there are injuries.

Jets | Tajh Boyd, Matt Simms to compete for No. 3 QB job    Wed Jul 2, 02:49 PM

New York Jets QBs Tajh Boyd and Matt Simms will compete for the No. 3 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Boyd is much more naturally gifted than Simms, and we believe he'll win the QB3 job with the Jets. He's an interesting developmental quarterback to keep an eye on in dynasty leagues.

Jets | Chris Johnson confident in role as lead back    Wed Jul 2, 01:04 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Johnson said Tuesday, July 1, that he's confident he'll be the team's lead back this year and won't be too involved in a timeshare with RBs Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell. 'Once the season starts and once we're playing and I'm doing my thing, I'm pretty sure if I'm making plays they're going to want to keep handing the ball off to me,' Johnson said. 'If they want me to continue making plays, I'm pretty sure I can't do that if I'm on the sideline.' Johnson said he's 'pretty much cleared' by Dr. James Andrews after coming off offseason knee surgery, and he said he's close to 100 percent health.

Footballguys view: We'll see if a change in scenery means a change in attitude for Johnson. He needs to stay healthy and motivated to prove himself as the Jets' starter. Right now, fantasy owners are fairly cool on Johnson--for good reason. His current ADP is RB25 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Stephen Hill working to improve health, speed    Mon Jun 30, 03:25 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill's (knee) No. 1 priority this offseason is staying healthy. Hill said he doesn't have to be at full-speed all the time. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal have worked with Hill on controlling strides and changing direction in order to better control his speed.

Footballguys view: It's a make-or-break year for Hill. He's big and fast, but Hill is constantly banged up and has been a career underachiever to this point. Hill has missed nine full games over the last two years, and he's missed parts of others due to injury. He should start on the outside opposite Eric Decker this year, but we're likely to see slot receiver Jeremy Kerley produce more in 2014. The Jets won't have a robust passing game regardless if Geno Smith or Michael Vick starts for them at quarterback.

Jets | Dimitri Patterson praises head coach    Sun Jun 29, 11:36 AM

New York Jets CB Dimitri Patterson praised head coach Rex Ryan for the positive energy he gives off. 'Rex gives off this positive energy that spreads around,' Patterson told me. 'That's why the guys played so hard for him toward the end of the year. What stands out to me is he knows how to put his players in a positive space, mentally.'

Footballguys view: Rex is known as a players coach. It would be newsworthy if somebody on his team didn't like his coaching style. As well liked as he may be, Ryan has to be in a make-or-break season this year.

Jets | Eric Decker having a positive impact on younger receivers    Sat Jun 28, 08:30 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker is having a positive influence on the team's younger receivers, according to wide receivers coach Sanjay Lal. 'In fact, I was showing one of the younger guys a clip, saying, 'You should run the route like this,'' Lal said. 'He didn't quite realize who it was. And he said, 'Oh, that's Decker?' We joked about it. I said, 'Now you're going to run it like that? Because you saw Decker do it?' He was, like, 'Yep.' It was like, 'OK.''

Footballguys view: Decker is the team's top target after hauling in a big free agent contract from the Jets earlier this year. It's a good sign that he's giving them veteran leadership in addition to what he can do on the field. Decker won't match the numbers he posted catching passes from Peyton Manning, but we feel he could put up WR3 numbers as the Jets top target. His current ADP is WR36 (8.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Ed Reed unlikely to return    Sat Jun 28, 11:45 AM

The New York Jets likely will not have interest in re-signing free-agent FS Ed Reed unless one of their starting safeties suffers an injury.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Reed is nowhere near the player he used to be. We'd be shocked if any team signed Reed at this point of his career.

Jets | Two WRs up for kick return job    Sat Jun 28, 11:37 AM

New York Jets WRs Jacoby Ford and Clyde Gates are considered the leading candidates for the kick returner job entering training camp.

Footballguys view: Both Ford and Gates can fly down the field. Neither have done much as a receiver during their pro career. We'll see which one wins the job in training camp.

Jets | Hope Jalen Saunders can be returner    Sat Jun 28, 11:37 AM

The New York Jets are hoping WR Jalen Saunders will be able to win the punt returner job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Saunders can make plays in space. He's quick, agile and can make defenders miss in the open field. Saunders is a small receiver and struggles to win contested catches. His main contribution in the pros will be as a return specialist only despite being a good route-runner.

Jets | To limit Chris Johnson    Thu Jun 26, 08:44 AM

New York Jets running backs coach Anthony Lynn said the team plans to limit RB Chris Johnson's touches to keep him fresh. 'He's got some miles on him,' Lynn said. 'So we're going to have to be strategic in how we use him, and when we use him, to keep him fresh so that he can be the explosive guy that I know that he can be.' Johnson will be in a committee with Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell.

Footballguys view: This makes all the sense in the world as we know Johnson isn't as effective as he had been in the past and can get a bit banged up. Keeping him healthy will keep him on the field and allow him to make the big plays the Jets need him to. Chris Ivory and Bilal Powell are more than capable of taking some carries without damaging the effectiveness of the run game. We see Johnson as a very low end RB2, while Ivory is a RB5. Powell is bench depth and no more than that.

Jets | Jace Amaro struggling    Wed Jun 25, 12:16 PM

New York Jets rookie TE Jace Amaro is struggling in his initial workouts. The no-huddle, spread system at Texas Tech is significantly different from the Jets' deeper pro-style playbook. He looked lost in three-wide packages and needs to polish his routes, in-line position, footwork and releases.

Footballguys view: Amaro is making a transition, but the team should still find a specialized use for him on passing downs with less on his plate even if he has trouble adjusting to the pro game in his rookie year. He has great promise in dynasty leagues, but don't look for a big impact from Amaro in fantasy leagues this year.

Jets | Stephen Hill impressing     Fri Jun 20, 10:58 PM

New York Jets WR Stephen Hill had a solid minicamp, moving well and catching the passes thrown his way.

Footballguys view: Hill is in a make-or-break season. He's failed to live up to expectations so far as a pro. He's failed to stay healthy and when he's been on the field he looks lethargic in and out of his breaks. The team could sure use some help at the wide receiver position.

Jets | Michael Vick considers himself a pioneer    Fri Jun 20, 06:23 PM

New York Jets QB Michael Vick believes he was the pioneer of the move to fast, young quarterbacks in the NFL. 'I was the guy who started it all,' Vick said. 'I revolutionized the game. I changed the way it was played in the NFL.' Vick is currently the all-time leading rusher at the QB position with 5,857 yards.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Vick can revolutionize the position for the Jets this year. He'll be competing with Geno Smith for the starting job in training camp. Smith should get every opportunity to win the job, but don't count out the veteran.

Jets | Two signed, one cut    Thu Jun 19, 05:14 PM

The New York Jets signed free-agent PK Andrew Furney and P Jake Schum (Buccaneers) to undisclosed deals Thursday, June 19. In a corresponding move, the team released TE Terrence Miller.

Footballguys view: Another bubble player kicks the bucket while a couple of camp legs join. We don't expect much from either the punter or kicker, though the Jets were trying to get competition for the incumbents all spring.

Jets | No practice for Jeff Cumberland    Thu Jun 19, 03:44 PM

New York Jets TE Jeff Cumberland (undisclosed) did not participate in practice Thursday, June 19.

Footballguys view: Cumberland is likely just getting some extra rest before camp. With rookie Jace Amaro on the team, Cumberland's responsibilities will probably be in-line blocking which means his fantasy value will be very little.

Jets | Coach optimistic Chris Johnson will be ready for camp    Thu Jun 19, 02:56 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he is pretty optimistic RB Chris Johnson (knee) will be ready to go for training camp, although Johnson could be on a pitch count.

Footballguys view: The Jets could use the boost in the offense. Johnson isn't the back he once was, but he could be a useful piece. Ivory and he will split carries, which will keep them both fresher but limit their opportunities. Johnson has the upside to break off some big plays, so his value is a little bit better than Ivory's. We peg Johnson as a low-end RB2 or a solid RB3. Ivory is no more than a RB5 at this point.

New York Jets LB David Harris (hamstring) did not participate in practice Thursday, June 19, with a hamstring injury.
