Jets | Frankie Hammond may be top punt returner    Fri Jun 23, 06:28 PM

New York Jets WR Frankie Hammond Jr. appears to be the leading candidate for the punt returner job at this point, but RB Elijah McGuire could win the job if he performs well during training camp.

Footballguys view: We like the upside of McGuire in this situation. This is a battle that will play itself out in training camp.

Jets | Matt Forte to be workhorse?    Fri Jun 23, 10:38 AM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte will be the offensive workhorse this season, in the opinion of NJ Advance Media's Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: This is a conflicting report as to what most expected with the rebuilding Jets in 2017. Bilal Powell was thought to be the primary back with Forte playing the complementary role. Forte has a current ADP of RB43 (9.08) while Powell is at RB27 (6.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. Watch this battle closely in training camp to see how it unfolds.

Jets | Elijah McGuire will have a role    Fri Jun 23, 10:38 AM

New York Jets RB Elijah McGuire will have a role with the team this season, according to running backs coach Stump Mitchell. 'I like everything (about him),' Mitchell said. 'He's got great hands. As a third-down back or simply a back, he can catch the ball extremely well. He has good vision, and a good ability to make cuts. I like him. He's a student of the game and good in the classroom.'

Footballguys view: McGuire can be a standout player in a certain role. At 5'10" 214 pounds, McGuire has a good size/speed combination. He's not a forceful runner between the tackles but can be especially dangerous in space. McGuire can be lined up in the slot or catch passes easily as a relief-valve receiver out of the backfield.

Jets | Gang Green adds Marquess Wilson    Tue Jun 20, 01:57 PM

Free-agent WR Marquess Wilson (Bears) signed an undisclosed contract with the New York Jets on Tuesday, June 20.

Footballguys view: Wilson is a speed merchant on the field but has struggled with staying healthy. A foot injury limited him to just three games with the Bears in 2016. The Jets need competition at the WR position and we'll see if Wilson can latch on as a reserve receiver for 2017.

Jets | Josh McCown losing grip on starting gig?    Sun Jun 18, 08:13 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg made some strides during minicamp, according to Brian Costello of the New York Post, and Costello believes Hackenberg could beat out QB Josh McCown to be the Week 1 starter.

Footballguys view: Sounds like Hackenberg is hitting fewer reporters on the sidelines during Jets mandatory minicamp. The Jets are tanking and the best way to get into a top pick in next year's draft is to start Hackenberg. Sam Darnold (USC) or Josh Allen (Wyoming) should get used to the idea of playing for the Jets.

New York Jets LB Demario Davis said he has lost five pounds this offseason and believes he is much faster than he was in previous years.

Jets | Jamaal Adams 'the real deal'    Sun Jun 18, 11:17 AM

New York Jets first-round S Jamal Adams had the most impressive spring of any Jets' rookie since Sheldon Richardson in 2013, according to the New York Post's Brian Costello, who added the No. 6 overall pick will be a Day 1 starter and should have an immediate impact on the defense.

Footballguys view: The Jets don't do everything right (see quarterback, etc) but man alive do they have an exciting young secondary building with Adams as a key cornerstone. Adams will team up with fellow rookie FS Marcus Maye (second round, Florida) to provide the Jets with a physical, athletic and aggressive safety duo. The rest of the team needs plenty of work, but Adams and Maye are a great combination for the Jets to build from.

Jets | Three NYJ linemen hobbled during OTAs    Sat Jun 17, 07:21 PM

New York Jets OT Kelvin Beachum (knee) was limited all spring, OG Brian Winters (shoulder) has yet to practice and OL Ben Ijalana (knee) sat out the last two weeks of offseason practices, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Jets | Charone Peake has lead on third receiver spot    Sat Jun 17, 11:32 AM

New York Jets WR Charone Peake is expected to be one of the team's top three receivers on Opening Day, along with Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: We're always intrigued by Clemson WRs when they get to the pro level. A seventh-round pick in 2016, Peake sat behind guys like DeAndre Hopkins, Sammy Watkins and Martavis Bryant at Clemson. At 6'2" 209 pounds, Peake has a nice size/speed combination. He can be a factor as a receiver at all three levels of the field. As a no3 wideout with the Jets, Peake should be able to take advantage of coverage in multiple ways. We'd feel better about his dynasty outlook if the Jets had a real QB. Maybe next year....

Jets | Christian Hackenberg making a move?    Fri Jun 16, 03:39 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg performed a 'little better than expected' in minicamp, and QB Josh McCown does not have an 'insurmountable lead' over him in the race to start Week 1. QB Bryce Petty is running third on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: There's nowhere to go but up for Hackenberg. Earlier camp reports indicate he's been terrible but now perhaps a little better than terrible. It doesn't matter for fantasy owners as we anticipate little production from the Jets passing game no matter who is the quarterback.

Jets | ArDarius Stewart uncertain for training camp    Fri Jun 16, 12:04 PM

New York Jets WR ArDarius Stewart (thumb, groin) told reporters he does not know if he will be ready for training camp after recently undergoing thumb and groin surgeries.

Footballguys view: Stewart has missed all of OTAs and minicamp due to these two surgeries. Right now, fellow rookie Chad Hansen is in line for the no3 job with the Jets behind Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson.

Jets | No favorite among Jets quarterbacks    Thu Jun 15, 07:18 PM

New York Jets QBs Josh McCown, Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are in a genuine quarterback competition, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: This situation is a mess, and it's one fantasy owners don't need to dial into. Bowles said so far there is no frontrunner for the starting position and that the quarterback battle will be sorted out during training camp.

Jets | Demario Davis accepts pay cut    Wed Jun 14, 07:15 PM

New York Jets LB Demario Davis accepted a pay cut after he was traded to the Jets, according to a source. Davis was scheduled to make $3.7 million but will now receive a $900,000 base salary and can make an additional $1.225 million in incentives.

Jets | Chad Hansen sidelined Wednesday    Wed Jun 14, 05:29 PM

New York Jets WR Chad Hansen (knee) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 14, because of a sore knee. Head coach Todd Bowles said he does not think the injury is serious and that Hansen should be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Hansen could be a big part of the new-look Jets WR corps. The rookie from Cal has drawn Allen Hurns (Jaguars) comparisons from some in the scouting community. Hansen can get by the defense for deep targets, and he's got the body control to work the boundaries on the field. He will compete with fellow rookie Ardarius Stewart and second-year pro Charone Peake to be the Jets no3 wideout behind Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson.

Jets | ArDarius Stewart undergoes two surgeries    Wed Jun 14, 04:13 PM

New York Jets WR ArDarius Stewart (groin, thumb) recently underwent surgeries to repair his groin and thumb injuries. Head coach Todd Bowles said Stewart is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Stewart is going to compete for the no3 wideout spot with the Jets behind Quincy Enunwa and Robby Anderson. During his college career at Alabama, Stewart stood out because of his physical play. He's a run-after-the-catch specialist and isn't much of a route runner at this point in his career. He'll compete with Charone Peake and fellow rookie Chad Hansen for targets in 2017.

Jets | Matt Forte likely to stay    Wed Jun 14, 09:21 AM

New York Jets RB Matt Forte is likely to remain with the team because he is guaranteed $4 million this season, in the opinion of beat writer Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: The Jets have been purging their roster with LB David Harris and WR Eric Decker getting released recently. Forte's guaranteed money means he'll likely stay with the team. Expect him to be part of a RBBC with Bilal Powell in 2017. He's got a current ADP of RB42 (9.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | ArDarius Stewart also sidelined    Tue Jun 13, 05:50 PM

New York Jets WR ArDarius Stewart (groin) will not participate in minicamp this week, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: The Jets are running a little shorthanded at the position. They released Eric Decker, Quincy Enunwa (neck) is missing minicamp and now Stewart -- likely the third WR behind Enunwa and Robby Anderson -- is banged up. The rookie from Alabama will be out for minicamp and we'll have to see if he can be ready for training camp at the end of July.

Jets | Quincy Enunwa absent at minicamp    Tue Jun 13, 05:47 PM

New York Jets WRs Quincy Enunwa (neck) will not participate in minicamp this week, according to head coach Todd Bowles.

Footballguys view: Enunwa is likely to be the Jets top target this year with the release of Eric Decker. The quarterback situation will give you nightmares, but the opportunity is there for Enunwa to pay off like a WR3/WR4 for fantasy owners. His current ADP is WR58 (12.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Ben Ijalana had knee scope    Tue Jun 13, 05:12 PM

New York Jets OT Ben Ijalana (knee) did not practice at minicamp Tuesday, June 13, because he underwent a knee scope last week. It is not considered serious and he is expected to be good to go for training camp.

Jets | Kenbrell Thompkins at Jets camp    Tue Jun 13, 12:03 PM

Free-agent WR Kenbrell Thompkins (Jets) is trying out at the New York Jets' minicamp Tuesday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Thompkins has acrobatic ability as a receiver, but he's a long-shot to make the 53-man roster. The Jets have purged the roster, cutting Eric Decker as the latest move and are going with younger options at the wide receiver position. Quincy Enunwa will be the lead receiver this year with guys like Robby Anderson and rookie Ardarius Stewart vying for targets behind him.

Jets | Denard Robinson at Jets camp    Tue Jun 13, 09:43 AM

Free-agent RB Denard Robinson (Jaguars) is participating at the New York Jets' minicamp Tuesday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Robinson was a fun college player to watch at Michigan (and a favorite of the Sklar Brothers) but his pro career has been nothing to write home about. He worked with the Bears during rookie minicamp but didn't get a contract. Robinson is a long-shot to make it with the Jets even though their roster isn't chock full of a ton of talent.

Jets | Jordan Todman expected to join Jets    Mon Jun 12, 06:19 PM

Free-agent RB Jordan Todman (Colts) is expected to sign with the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Behind Bilal Powell and Matt Forte, the Jets have 2017 sixth-round pick Eli McGuire. Todman plays a lot like McGuire because he's a change-of-pace back. Don't expect Todman to do much of anything if he's added and if he makes the final roster.

Jets | Eric Decker released    Mon Jun 12, 05:10 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker was released Monday, June 12, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With Jeremy Maclin picking the Ravens (the team perhaps interested in trading with the Jets), Decker's release was imminent. This move saves the Jets $7.25 million in cap space. Decker is coming back from an injury shortened 2016 and has been recovering from hip and shoulder surgeries. If healthy, Decker can still make plays at the pro level. Expect a team like the Bills or Eagles to show the most interest.

Jets | Marcus Maye impressive at workouts    Sun Jun 11, 07:30 PM

New York Jets S Marcus Maye has impressed the organization with his ability to pick up the defensive scheme and limit the mental mistakes during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The Jets reshaped the back end of their defense with the selection of Maye in round two and SS Jamal Adams in round one of the 2017 NFL draft. These two will be the vanguard for the Jets as they work towards rebuilding their franchise. Maye is a player who can roam as he's incredibly instinctive. He can also play in the box as Maye is known as a physical player.

Jets | Eric Decker may stick around a bit longer    Sat Jun 10, 06:40 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker may stay with the Jets a little bit longer. He was originally scheduled to be released or traded early in the week, but speculation is the team is waiting to see where WR Jeremy Maclin ends up before making any moves.

Footballguys view: Maclin on the open market does cloud the interest in Decker. It looks like Maclin could end up in Buffalo and Decker could go to Baltimore. Stay tuned.

Jets | Austin Seferian-Jenkins steps up    Sat Jun 10, 12:51 AM

New York Jets TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins was the most impressive player on the field during OTAs, according to beat writer Connor Hughes.

Footballguys view: That's not saying much given the current state of the Jets roster. Seferian-Jenkins has always been a bit of a tease. The natural talent is there, but concentration problems and injuries have prevented him from playing up to his potential. We don't plan on him doing that with the Jets this year.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg to start sooner than later?    Fri Jun 9, 02:40 AM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg will likely take over from QB Josh McCown sometime early in the 2017 season, according to ESPN's Rich Cimini, who says that Hackenberg will start 'at least 10 games' in the upcoming season.

Footballguys view: At least 10 games means the Jets are basically tanking this year. Hackenberg is no long-term answer at the position, and we predict the Jets will be looking at a quarterback in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft (Sam Darnold USC, Josh Allen Wyoming, Josh Rosen UCLA, etc).

Jets | Quinton Patton released    Thu Jun 8, 09:49 PM

The New York Jets released WR Quinton Patton from the Reserve/Injured list with an injury settlement Thursday, June 8.

Footballguys view: Patton was put on IR with an undisclosed injury a few days ago. When healthy, some team could be willing to take a chance on the acrobatic veteran.

Jets | Christian Hackenberg has work to do    Thu Jun 8, 09:16 PM

New York Jets QB Christian Hackenberg displayed improved footwork during OTAs, according to beat writer Connor Hughes, but Hughes said that while Hackenberg looks better than he did as a rookie, he still doesn't 'look good' by NFL standards.

Footballguys view: Hackenberg has looked downright terrible at OTAs. He can look better than he did as a rookie, but that's not saying much.

Jets | Three candidates for Jets MLB job    Wed Jun 7, 04:47 PM

New York Jets LBs Demario Davis, Bruce Carter and Julian Stanford are candidates to start at middle linebacker after the team decided to release LB David Harris.

Footballguys view: Davis should be considered the favorite. Even though none of these linebackers are top talents, the spot next to Darron Lee could be surprisingly good in IDP leagues with the amount of time the Jets defense will spend on the field.

Jets | ArDarius Stewart has thumb injury    Wed Jun 7, 04:30 PM

New York Jets WR ArDarius Stewart (thumb) has not practiced much lately because he is dealing with a thumb injury. Stewart is expected to have a key role in the passing game as a rookie.

Footballguys view: Stewart will vie for snaps with fourth-round pick Chad Hansen and attempt to unseat deep threat Robby Anderson as a starter. The coming release or trade of Eric Decker will open up opportunity for the young Jets receiving corps, including 2016 draft picks Charone Peake and Jalin Marshall (after his suspension).

Jets | Gang Green reached out to Steve Smith    Wed Jun 7, 12:00 AM

The New York Jets recently contacted WR Steve Smith (Ravens) to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement and playing in 2017, according to the NFL Network's Kimberly Jones.

Footballguys view: Why in the world would Smith want to come back and play for the Jets? They're likely going to tank this year and going 6-10 is probably a pipe dream for one of the worst franchises in the league. If Smith were to return (seems doubtful) it would be for a Super Bowl contender.

Jets | Eric Decker medically cleared    Tue Jun 6, 11:30 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets WR Eric Decker is healthy following offseason hip and shoulder surgeries.

Footballguys view: That means the team can trade him away. Decker is a weapon when healthy. He's got reliable hands, runs good routes and can be consistent in the red zone. Decker should have more than a few suitors, either as a trade target or when the Jets release him.

Jets | Eric Decker no longer in Jets' plans    Tue Jun 6, 06:00 PM

New York Jets WR Eric Decker has been informed that he will either be released or traded this week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This move has been bandied about, especially after the team moved on from Brandon Marshall, but now it looks like it's going to happen. Any team in need of a solid starter at wide receiver should be interested in Decker. He's got a cap hit of $8.75 million in 2017 with $3 million in dead money.

New York Jets WR Eric Decker (hip, shoulder) did not have a red non-contact jersey for the start of practice Tuesday, June 6, but he put one on before the start in team drills.

Footballguys view: Let's go to The Situation Room for a JERSEYWATCH 2017 update. Decker is not back at full strength if he's wearing the jersey, but all signs point to him being ready for the start of camp. OTAs are supposed to be non-contact anyway...so maybe Decker just looks good in red.

Jets | Juston Burris seeing snaps during OTAs    Sun Jun 4, 04:22 PM

New York Jets CB Juston Burris has received a lot of snaps during organized team activities and is working as an outside cornerback in the nickel package.

Footballguys view: Burris was known as a physical corner both inside and outside during his college career at NC State. The Jets took him in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft with the idea that he could contribute on defense and special teams. He played 185 snaps as a rookie in 2016 and should be in for more playing time in 2017.

Jets | Josh McCown has advantage in QB competition    Sun Jun 4, 04:12 PM

New York Jets QB Josh McCown has an advantage over QBs Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty in the competition for the starting quarterback job because he is familiar with the West Coast offense, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles also said he expects Hackenberg to play at some point.

Footballguys view: His advantage is not only experience, but also because the other two aren't really good. Hackenberg was a second-round pick last year but he was so bad the team didn't turn to him as a rookie. We'll see if that's different this year. Petty is your run-of-the-mill backup quarterback...at best. This situation is one of the worst at the position in the entire league. Don't look for fantasy value from the Jets QBs no matter who wins the job.
