Jets | Matt Simms released    Thu May 28, 05:04 PM

New York Jets QB Matt Simms was released Thursday, May 28.

Footballguys view: No shocker here, despite what his dad said about him not getting a chance. Simms is a good teammate by all accounts and could end up as a decent backup, but he's no longer an option for the Jets. He might land somewhere as a backup.

Jets | Geno Smith to see competition    Thu May 28, 08:29 AM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets QB Geno Smith is currently working as the starter, according to Jets head coach Todd Bowles Wednesday, May 27. However, Smith will face competition during the summer. The job is Smith's to lose, per Bowles.

Footballguys view: It's Smith's job to lose and even with the 'vote of confidence' of being named camp starter, the third-year quarterback is standing on a very thin ledge. His only real serious competition is a 32-year old journeyman coming off a middling season, so if he can't blow the doors off Fitzgerald, the Jets should have their final answer to the question, "Is Geno our franchise quarterback?"

Jets | Ryan Fitzpatrick practices    Wed May 27, 10:35 PM

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (leg) participated in team drills during organized team activities Wednesday, May 27. Fitzpatrick worked with the second-team offense during practice.

Footballguys view: Geno Smith is the starter for the Jets this year. Fitzpatrick gives the team valuable veteran depth. If Smith struggles, we could see the Jets turn to Fitzpatrick at some point during the year.

Jets | Jeremy Kerley not present at OTAs    Wed May 27, 04:42 PM

New York Jets WR Jeremy Kerley (personal) missed organized team activities Wednesday, May 27.

Footballguys view: Kerley is going to compete with rookie Devin Smith to be the team's third wide receiver behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker this year. He should be able to find open spaces over the middle where his run-after-the-catch ability can be highlighted. The Jets are going to be as run-heavy as they possibly can be this season, and that makes Kerley a player fantasy owners should pass on.

Jets | Chris Ivory absent from OTAs    Wed May 27, 04:37 PM

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory (personal) was not present at organized team activities Wednesday, May 27.

Footballguys view: The Jets are looking to find their lead back, and Ivory will have to prove himself worthy of the starting job in training camp. He'll compete with Stevan Ridley and Zac Stacy for the top spot with the Jets. Ivory has a good all-purpose skill set, and there's a dash of Marshawn Lynch to his game. We'll see if he can come out on top in this competition. Right now, fantasy owners are taking Ivory off the board at RB36 (8.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Brandon Marshall at his peak?    Wed May 27, 04:31 PM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said he feels like he's better now than he's ever been. 'I feel great, and now I'm starting to see the game differently, being older and having a lot of experience,' Marshall said. 'So having all of that working for me, and going against those guys every single day, I'm excited about doing my job this year.'

Footballguys view: Marshall gets another fresh start in 2015, this time he's looking to produce for the Jets. With Geno Smith already announced as the starting quarterback, offensive coordinator Chan Gailey will craft an offense that best fits what Smith can do. Part of the plan should be to get Marshall as involved as possible. Marshall is going off the board at WR22 (5.01) in 12-team PPR leagues that are drafting right now.

Jets | Dee Milliner competing for roster spot    Tue May 26, 12:37 AM

New York Jets CB Dee Milliner (heel) is still working his way back from an injury but will have a chance to compete for a roster spot, according to defensive coordinator Kacy Rodgers.

Footballguys view: The Jets have completely re-worked their secondary this offseason. Milliner was atop the depth chart to begin last year, but this Achilles' injury has now clouded his future. He might be the fourth corner on the depth chart now behind Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine.

Jets | Marcus Gilchrist should be ready for camp    Sun May 24, 09:42 AM

New York Jets FS Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder) is not expected to participate in any of the offseason workouts because of his shoulder injury but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: The Jets grabbed Gilchrist in free agency with a four-year, $22 million deal with $8.5 million guaranteed. He'll be the team's centerfielder in 2015, and they'll ask him to roam the secondary looking to make plays on the ball. The shoulder scope is a minor surgery, and Gilchrist should be near 100 percent healthy when training camp rolls around.

Jets | NYJ to have tight end platoon    Thu May 21, 05:50 PM

New York Jets TEs Jeff Cumberland and Jace Amaro will both start this season, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said Cumberland would be lined up in the 'Y' position while Amaro would play the H-back and fullback positions.

Footballguys view: The 'Y' tight end is the more traditional (blocking) role. The 'H' tight end is the guy who will be moved around the field to create mismatches. Amaro has the athleticism to be a weapon in the new Chan Gailey offense. He's going undrafted right now in 12-team PPR leagues, but he's someone who should be on your waiver wire speed dial.

Jets | Stevan Ridley to be ready for training camp    Thu May 21, 05:30 PM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) should be healthy enough for training camp as he continues to recover from knee surgery. Head coach Todd Bowles said Ridley is not ready for team drills, but participated in positional drills.

Footballguys view: Ridley is going to have to wait to prove himself until training camp. The veteran back will have to prove his value over guys like Chris Ivory and Zac Stacy. The Jets should run the ball quite a bit in order to help keep defenses honest for third-year quarterback Geno Smith.

Jets | Will use two tight ends    Thu May 21, 02:58 PM

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles plans to use a package with two tight ends, including TE Jeff Cumberland and TE Jace Amaro. Cumberland will be a traditional tight end and Amaro will line up in a halfback-style position.

Footballguys view: In other words, if you are inclined to take one of the two in fantasy, Amaro is your guy. Cumberland will get some targets, but mostly be a blocker type while Amaro will be more of a 'move' tight end, a position much better suited to fantasy production. Neither is currently being drafted, which makes them ideal free agent acquisitions. That could change this summer, and Amaro in particular could end up a strong TE2, if quarterback Geno Smith can progress this season.

Jets | Running back situation up in the air    Thu May 21, 02:51 PM

New York Jets coach Todd Bowles said his team's running back situation may take until the preseason to sort out. RB's Chris Ivory, Bilal Powell, Zac Stacy, Stevan Ridley and Daryl Richardson all have experience at the position, but no one has broken out yet.

Footballguys view: Bowles has no attachment to any of the previous regime's running backs - we're looking at you Powell and Ivory - but Ridley is coming off a significant leg injury and Stacy faded during last year. There's room for everyone to get carries which hurts everyone's value right now. Until we see how things shake out more in camp, this is a situation to avoid.

Jets | Geno Smith is starter     Wed May 20, 02:55 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is the starting quarterback and will not see competition in training camp, according to offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

Footballguys view: Gailey doesn't beat around the bush here. Smith showed better last season, and he finished 2014 strong with a 358-yard, three-touchdown performance in Week 17 against the Miami Dolphins. While some may not be confident in Smith, we feel that he'll be the best he can be under Gailey. During his coaching career, Gailey has built a reputation for getting the most out of quarterbacks like Kordell Stewart (Steelers) and Tyler Thigpen (Chiefs). The Jets are going to run the ball a lot, and that should help keep things balanced for Smith and the offense.

Jets | NYJ to run more in 2015?    Tue May 19, 02:14 PM

New York Jets RBs Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley, Zac Stacy and others could be busy this season, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Bowles said the reason he hired offensive coordinator Chan Gailey is because he has a track record of being able to run the ball, at least in his college coaching days. Bowles supposedly prefers a balanced, ball-control offense, which puts more of the onus on the running backs.

Footballguys view: There's a huge question mark at quarterback (Geno Smith, Ryan Fitzpatrick) so it's wise for the Jets to lean on their rushing attack. Through free agency and trades they have compiled quite a group of backs led by Ivory. We believe in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey, and he could make Ivory a value add for fantasy owners. Ivory's current ADP is RB35 (8.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Stevan Ridley to be limited in OTAs    Tue May 19, 01:25 PM

New York Jets RB Stevan Ridley (knee) will be a limited participant in organized team activities, which begin Tuesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Ridley is still coming back from surgery to repair an ACL injury. He's going to be limited up to training camp. At that time, we could see him put in more time as he'll be closer to 100 percent. The backfield is jam-packed, especially after the Jets traded the Rams for Zac Stacy. Ridley will have to prove his value in a group that includes Stacy, Chris Ivory, Daryl Richardson and Bilal Powell.

Jets | Jeremy Kerley may return punts    Mon May 18, 08:36 PM

New York Jets WR Jeremy Kerley is one of the leading candidates to be the team's punt returner in 2015, according to special teams coach Bobby April.

Footballguys view: Kerley is going to be pushed by rookie Devin Smith for the WR3 job behind Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker. He's got the agility and burst to make plays in the open field as a return man.

Jets | Devin Smith may not be returner    Mon May 18, 08:32 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith may not be a candidate for the kick or punt returner job this season since he does not have much experience in the role, according to special teams coach Bobby April.

Footballguys view: Smith certainly has the speed to make big plays as a return man if needed. We'll see if he starts getting some experience on special teams during his rookie season with the Jets.

Jets | Marcus Gilchrist had offseason scope    Thu May 14, 06:12 PM

New York Jets SS Marcus Gilchrist (shoulder) had a scope performed following the 2014 season. Gilchrist wouldn't confirm what the purpose of the scope was Thursday, May 14, but he said something 'needed to be fixed.' Gilchrist has been limited so far in camp.

Footballguys view: We'll see if he's still hampered when training camp comes along. The only other strong safety on the roster is Jaiquawn Jarrett, so getting Gilchrist back is a priority.

Jets | Brandon Marshall working with QB    Sun May 10, 10:18 AM

New York Jets WR Brandon Marshall said has been living with QB Geno Smith for time being, and the two players have been working on learning the offense. Marshall is expected to stay with Smith until late June when he finds his own place to live.

Footballguys view: This sounds like a reality show in the making. In all seriousness, we like seeing this from Marshall. The veteran receiver can be a big part of what the Jets do in the passing game this season, and anything he can do to strength the chemistry he has with Smith is nothing but a good thing. Fantasy owners should look at Marshall as a WR3 with WR2 upside. His current ADP is WR21 (5.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Jets | Devin Smith not just a deep threat    Sun May 10, 09:43 AM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith said he believes he can fill the role as a deep threat for the Jets but rejected the notion that he is only a deep threat. 'I really don't worry about it, because I know how good I am,' Smith said. 'I wouldn't be here, obviously, if I couldn't do anything.'

Footballguys view: Meh...he's just a deep threat in our eyes. His speed is too enticing to use on "9" routes at the pro level. We want to see better concentration from Smith as a pro. Too often in college at Ohio State, Smith would drop deep targets put right on the money. If he can improve his focus, Smith will be an outstanding deep threat for the Jets.

Jets | Devin Smith signs contract    Fri May 8, 06:49 PM

New York Jets WR Devin Smith signed his contract with the team Friday, May 8. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Smith is a big-play receiver with the speed to take the top off the defense. He's got instant burst to get off the line of scrimmage, and Smith doesn't lose much speed in and out of his breaks. Concentration problems and drops will need to be cleaned up if he wants to play up to his potential as a pro.

Jets | Bryce Petty impressive at practice    Fri May 8, 05:53 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty showed velocity and accuracy with his passes during seven-on-seven drills Friday, May 8. 'He has all the intangibles, but that word is thrown around so much,' head coach Todd Bowles. 'It's sort of the new word for 'potential.''

Footballguys view: Petty has impressive arm talent, and he seems like a coachable prospect. However, he needs to learn how to work from under center. It's not just taking a snap cleanly, Petty needs to show the ability to diagnose the defense while dropping back. He then needs to prove that he can make stick throws into tight coverage. We're curious to monitor his development under Jets OC Chan Gailey.

Jets | Bryce Petty signs    Thu May 7, 06:43 PM

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty signed his rookie contract Thursday, May 7.

Footballguys view: Petty is an interesting dynasty prospect to keep an eye on. Under Jets OC Chan Gailey, we could see Petty look more comfortable than he would under a different coach. Petty put up good numbers in a spread system where he threw to mostly wide-open receivers and never called plays. At the Senior Bowl earlier this year, Petty struggled to take snaps from under center. The arm talent is there, but Petty has a lot to develop before he is ready for the pro game.

Jets | Zac Stacy acquired by Jets    Sat May 2, 05:23 PM

Former St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy has been acquired by the New York Jets in exchange for the Rams' 224th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Jets get a proven player for a seventh round pick who probably would have struggled to make the roster. Stacy is in a crowded backfield though with Chris Ivory, Stevan Ridley and Bilal Powell. It's hard to see him breaking out and with this many backs, consistent fantasy points could be hard to find.

Jets | New York interested in Zac Stacy?    Sat May 2, 02:34 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Zac Stacy may be drawing interest from the New York Jets. The Jets have reportedly asked the Rams about Stacy, who now seems to be on bad terms with St. Louis after RB Todd Gurley was selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Stacy has shown flashes of talent, and might do well behind Chris Ivory. He'd vie with Bilal Powell and Stevan Ridley for the second spot.

Jets | Bryce Petty selected    Sat May 2, 12:22 PM

Baylor QB Bryce Petty was selected by the New York Jets with the 103rd overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Petty rarely worked under center so he has a lot of work to do. Lucky for him, this is a perfect situation. He has Chan Gailey, who will be able to knock the edges off Petty's game if anyone can and he falls into a situation where the Jets will not force him into the lineup. If he beats out Geno Smith, that means Ryan Fitzpatrick will be starting. Petty has a strong arm and lots of upside if the Jets stay patient, so dynasty owners should keep him in mind.

Jets | DeVier Posey traded to NYJ    Fri May 1, 10:06 PM

The Houston Texans traded WR DeVier Posey to the New York Jets during Round 3 of the NFL Draft Friday, May 1. The Texans received the No. 70 overall pick, while the Jets get the No. 82 overall selection, as well as a fifth-round pick (No. 152) and a seventh-round pick (No. 229).

Footballguys view: Posey is an interesting player but will get lost in this offense behind Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker and new receiver Donovan Smith. Posey was derailed by injury and poor quarterback issues and could do well if they can find the targets. Hard to imagine they can though.

Link to story

Jets | Devin Smith selected by Jets    Fri May 1, 07:32 PM

Ohio State WR Devin Smith was selected 37th overall by the New York Jets in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1.

Footballguys view: The Jets are having a heck of a draft, which makes sense it's not in New York for once. If the Jets pick like this every year, fans would be happy to never see the draft in New York again. Smith is speed personified and can easily take the top off a defense. He's a bit raw but has an incredibly high ceiling. There are no excuses for the Jets quarterbacks, though New York Post writer Bart Hubbuch likened the offense to building a Ferrari with no engine. The Jets need to get improved quarterback play or he will be right.

Jets | Leonard Williams selected sixth overall    Thu Apr 30, 08:48 PM

Southern California DE Leonard Williams was selected sixth overall by the New York Jets in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Arguably the best defensive line in the league just got better. Williams' shoulder issues scared some teams off but the Jets got the value. We'll see if this pushes Mo Wilkerson out but if not, this defense is going to be insane.

Jets | Geno Smith says he deserves to start    Wed Apr 29, 04:23 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith believes the Jets are his team to lead, but acknowledges the competition he'll need to face in order to win the starting job. 'There's always other guys, and there's always going to be competition. I've always welcomed it, and I still do,' Smith said. The Jets brought in QB Ryan Fitzpatrick this offseason to compete with Smith and could bring in more competition via the draft.

Jets | Owner happy with Geno Smith     Wed Apr 29, 01:27 PM

New York Jets QB Geno Smith is a good starting quarterback if he cuts down on his mistakes, and the team needs to add some weapons on offense to help Smith, according to owner Woody Johnson. 'He's going to mature,' Johnson said. 'He's not going to be making rookie mistakes anymore and he's not going to be making sophomore mistakes anymore, hopefully. If he can carry over the way he finished last year, when he played against the Dolphins [in the final game], he played OK. So if he can keep that going, we're good. We're going to get him more targets.'

Footballguys view: Smith has shown some signs of growth and potential and at other times looked like he has stalled out and will only be a backup in the NFL long term. Chan Gailey has done more with less in the past, but Ryan Fitzpatrick looms as a QB who has had success with Gailey before. It's not impossible that the Jets end up with Marcus Mariota too.

Jets | To be fined in Darrelle Revis tampering case    Tue Apr 28, 12:39 PM

The New York Jets will be fined $100,000 for the tampering case involving CB Darrelle Revis.

Footballguys view: There's no draft pick being taken away from the Jets. At the end of the day, this is a small penalty for a team that was willing to get Revis at any cost.

Jets | NYJ would pass on Marcus Mariota?    Tue Apr 28, 01:12 AM

If the New York Jets had a shot at Oregon QB Marcus Mariota with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft the latest buzz in league circles is that they would pass on the quarterback.

Footballguys view: Just last week, the buzz was the Jets wanted to move up for Mariota. Now, they'll pass on him? We think they'd pass on him as that was the buzz earlier in the draft process. There's a lot of BS that is floated around in the month of April.

Jets | Benardrick McKinney could be option    Sun Apr 26, 10:24 AM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney could be an option for the New York Jets if he is available when they draft in the second round.

Footballguys view: McKinney is a two-down thumper who arrives at the ball with natural violence. He has good length for the position, and he can close on the ball-carrier quickly. McKinney does struggle in coverage, and he'll likely have to come off the field on passing downs at the pro level.

Jets | Meet with several OT prospects    Sat Apr 25, 09:24 AM

Miami (Fla.) OT Ereck Flowers, Stanford OT Andrus Peat and Pittsburgh OT T.J. Clemmings met with the New York Jets this offseason.

Footballguys view: Peat may be the best left tackle prospect in the draft. He's smart, athletic and has surprising quickness off the snap. Flowers is a right tackle in the pros, and he'll be an option for zone-blocking teams. Clemmings, a former defensive end for PITT, may have the highest upside of any right tackle in this draft but he's going to have to play with better technique as a pro.

Jets | Jaiquawn Jarrett signs tender    Fri Apr 24, 04:41 PM

New York Jets restricted free-agent SS Jaiquawn Jarrett signed his tender offer Friday, April 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jarrett was decent in pass coverage but a liability against the run. Depending on how Calvin Pryor does in his second season, as well as how the Jets' rebooted secondary looks, he may only be depth.

Jets | New York hosts Marcus Mariota    Thu Apr 23, 05:25 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota visited the New York Jets April 4. Mariota worked out for the Jets five days prior to that meeting as well.

Footballguys view: There is word the Jets may try to move up to acquire Mariota. They selected Geno Smith in the second round of the 2013 NFL draft, but they may feel he's not the long-term answer at quarterback. Mariota is athletic and a hard worker, but as a passer he needs polish. He worked out of the shotgun exclusively at Oregon, and he rarely was asked to make stick throws into tight coverage.

Jets | Jameis Winston not visiting Jets    Wed Apr 22, 09:40 AM

Updating a previous report, Florida State QB Jameis Winston's workout with the New York Jets has been canceled.

Footballguys view: Unlike Mariota, the drumbeat on Winston has been steady and almost unanimous. He's going #1 to the Bucs.

Jets | Breshad Perriman visits    Tue Apr 21, 07:31 AM

UCF WR Breshad Perriman visited the New York Giants on Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Perriman could be a WR1 at the pro level, but he has to work on some things before he's at that point. He's got a great blend of size/athleticism, and Perriman can explode into his route at the line of scrimmage. His technique as a route-runner is extremely raw, and Perriman needs to work on his focus when the ball is coming in to reduce the number of drops or body catches. He should be a second-round pick in the draft.

Jets | Bud Dupree could be option    Sat Apr 18, 09:16 AM

Kentucky DE/LB Bud Dupree could be an option for the New York Jets in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, because he has the size to fit head coach Todd Bowles' defensive scheme.

Footballguys view: Dupree is a freakish athlete who has drawn comparisons to Jamie Collins (Patriots) in the scouting community. He has the burst to get after the quarterback, and he's smooth enough to cover in open space. Look for Dupree to come off the board in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Jets | Will meet with Leonard Williams    Thu Apr 16, 02:47 PM

Southern California DE Leonard Williams is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: The Jets have a lot of d-line talent, but lack a pure pass rusher. Williams could be that guy in their defense, and if they don't go quarterback and Williams is on the board, he is a smart choice.

Link to story

Jets | Jameis Winston may not visit Jets    Tue Apr 14, 03:13 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston may not visit the New York Jets after all due to a scheduling conflict.

Footballguys view: We would be shocked if Winston is around when the Jets pick at sixth overall. We would also be surprised if the Jets surrendered enough to move up to the first-overall pick. Winston should be the top pick and the quarterback of the future for the Buccaneers.

Link to story

Jets | Marcus Mariota an option for Jets?    Mon Apr 13, 05:12 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be a target of the New York Jets as the NFL Draft approaches. New York is one team that could trade up with the Tennessee Titans for the No. 2 overall pick.

Footballguys view: The Jets have the sixth-overall pick in the 2015 NFL draft, and they could be in the market for a franchise quarterback. Mariota comes with a lot of question marks on the field, but they may feel he's worth starting over Geno Smith. Mariota has been generating a ton of buzz lately, but we'll see if it's only pre-draft hype at the end of this month.

Jets | Joe Mays signs    Mon Apr 13, 04:28 PM

Free-agent LB Joe Mays (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Mays is a two-down thumper who is shot out of a cannon as a run defender. He's a liability in coverage, and there are times when he misreads the play and gets out of position as a tackler.

Jets | Dante Fowler visiting    Mon Apr 13, 01:49 PM

Florida DE/LB Dante Fowler is scheduled to meet with the New York Jets Monday, April 13, and Tuesday, April 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Fowler is one of our favorite players in this draft class. He bounced all over the field at Florida, and he played at several different weights when he changed positions. He's still somewhat raw as a pass-rusher, but the tools are there for him to become a dominant player in the NFL. We could see Fowler come off the board in the top 10 of the 2015 NFL draft.
