Eagles | Derek Barnett may be ready for camp    Wed Jun 12, 04:41 PM

Philadelphia Eagles DE Derek Barnett (shoulder) hopefully will be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Doug Pederson.

Footballguys view: Barnett made it through six games in 2018 before this shoulder injury (and surgery) forced him out of the lineup. He's a talented player when healthy and a boost for the Eagles pass rush. We'll see if he can get out there at the start of camp later this summer.

Raiders | Arden Key had surgery    Wed Jun 12, 03:36 PM

Oakland Raiders DE Arden Key (shoulder) said he underwent shoulder surgery in January.

Footballguys view: Key was supposed to be a big part of the Raiders pass rush as a rookie in 2018, but in 16 games (10 starts) he only had 1.0 sack. The shoulder surgery is being declared as only a clean-up procedure. We'll see if Key can perform better in year two of his pro career.

Cowboys | PUP list likely for DeMarcus Lawrence    Tue Jun 11, 07:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (shoulder) likely will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. The team believes Lawrence will be ready for Week 1.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Lawrence has been recovering from shoulder surgery and there's a chance he is ready for the start of the regular season. If there are any snags in his recovery, Lawrence might not be able to get onto the field until September or October. We'll know more about Lawrence's recovery in the month of August.

Saints | Cameron Jordan lands extension    Tue Jun 11, 12:57 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan agreed to a three-year, $52.5 million contract extension Tuesday, June 11, that keeps him signed through the 2023 season.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Saints in the 2011 NFL draft, Jordan had previously expressed that he wants to be a Saints 'lifer' and is now under contract through his age-34 season. Jordan's new deal is worth a maximum of $55.5 million, which includes more than $42 million in guaranteed money, per Schefter's report.

Giants | Jeremiah Harris cut from IR    Fri Jun 7, 02:50 AM

New York Giants OLB Jeremiah Harris (undisclosed) was released from IR with an injury settlement Thursday, June 6.

Footballguys view: Harris caught on as a undrafted free agent for the Giants, but his injury ended his chances of making the team this year. The team signed former Steelers draft pick Keion Adams in his place. Adams will be trying to make the team as an edge rushing outside linebacker, just as Harris was.

Jaguars | Joshua Allen to miss minicamp    Thu Jun 6, 10:43 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars DE Joshua Allen (knee) is expected to miss the three-day minicamp, according to head coach Doug Marrone.

Footballguys view: Allen has a knee bruise and the team is being careful with him. The 2019 first-round pick should be a force to be reckoned with once healthy and getting after the passer.

Free-agent WR Brandon Reilly (Lions) signed an undisclosed contract to return to the Detroit Lions on Monday, June 3, after the team waived him nearly a month ago. LB Juwon Young was waived to make room for him on the roster.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Nebraska in 2017, Reilly has bounced around to a few different rosters since then. The Lions signed him to a reserve/futures deal back in late January. We'll monitor the 6'2" 200 pound wide receiver in super deep dynasty formats.

Patriots | Chase Winovich signs rookie deal    Mon Jun 3, 10:53 AM

New England Patriots third-round pick DE Chase Winovich signed a four-year deal Monday, June 3. The deal is worth $3,827,312 with a $997,312 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: There is a lot to like about Winovich's game. He's one of the most relentless players in this draft class and loves to get after opponents with a non-stop motor. Winovich plays with natural violence and has an intimidating edge to his game. His aggressive play style can be a double-edged sword as he will overrun plays at time. We'll be interested to see how the Patriots use him in the pros, but the potential is there for him to be a solid starter for years to come.

Bills | Trent Murphy finally healthy    Sat Jun 1, 09:33 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Trent Murphy (knee) said he is finally back at 100 percent after playing at less than full speed last year because of the knee injury that sidelined him for all of 2017.

Footballguys view: The Bills have been searching for an edge rush presence to complement Jerry Hughes and Murphy is probably the best candidate this year. If he can stay healthy, he should improve their passing down defense and have an outside shot at IDP relevance.

Ravens | Jaylon Ferguson inks rookie deal    Fri May 31, 03:27 PM

Baltimore Ravens third-round DE/LB Jaylon Ferguson (Louisiana Tech) signed a four-year contract with the Baltimore Ravens on Friday, May 31. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Jaguars | Josh Allen to play DE    Thu May 30, 11:37 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Joshua Allen was drafted to play at defensive end, according to defensive coordinator Todd Wash.

Footballguys view: Allen is a prototypical EDGE player who can get around would-be blockers with bend and burst. He's going to be tasked with getting after the quarterback early and often. Allen does have athleticism to be used in coverage but that's not what he does best.

Falcons | Takkarist McKinley playing some LB    Thu May 30, 10:49 AM

Atlanta Falcons DE Takkarist McKinley has spent time at strongside linebacker in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: McKinley is going to be primarily a defensive end for the Falcons still, but head coach Dan Quinn commented that there might be some packages where the pass-rusher is moved around. He had 7.0 sacks in 2018 and the team could benefit greatly from him increasing that number this season.

Redskins | Montez Sweat signs rookie contract    Wed May 29, 04:07 PM

Washington Redskins first-round draft choice DE Montez Sweat signed a four-year contract with the Redskins Wednesday, May 29. The deal includes a fifth-year option, but the financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Washington moved back into the first round of the 2019 NFL draft so they could snare Sweat. He's long, fast and quick around the edge. Sweat has the makings of a premiere pass rusher if he stays healthy and develops properly.

Falcons | Atlanta makes roster moves    Wed May 29, 02:26 PM

Free-agent OT Dieugot Joseph (Jets) and DE Austin Larkin (AAF) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, May 29. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also waived Devon Johnson.

Chargers | Joey Bosa fine despite soreness    Sun May 26, 04:09 PM

Los Angeles Chargers DE Joey Bosa (foot) said he is still dealing with some soreness in his foot but has been a full participant during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Bosa made it through seven games in 2018 dealing with this foot problem. It's not a big concern now, but tolerating and managing his soreness is just what Bosa will have to do. Bosa is a great player when healthy and should be in line for double-digit sacks in 2019.

Detroit Lions DE Austin Bryant (pectoral) is still recovering from a torn pectoral muscle he suffered this past season.

Packers | Mike Daniels not practicing    Sat May 25, 06:05 PM

Green Bay Packers DT Mike Daniels (foot) is not participating in offseason workouts likely because of a foot injury he suffered last season. Daniels is expected to see less snaps this upcoming season, but defensive line coach Jerry Montgomery said he believes fewer snaps will make Daniels more dominant.

Cowboys | Several players to miss workouts    Fri May 24, 07:52 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (shoulder), CB Byron Jones (hip), DE Christian Covington (calf), DE Taco Charlton (ankle, shoulder) and WR Allen Hurns (ankle) will not participate in the offseason workouts because of injuries.

Footballguys view: Of these, Charlton is probably the most worrisome, as the team has gotten little contributions from him in the first two years of his rookie deal after going in the first round in 2017. Hurns could fall behind Randall Cobb for slot duties while he is out if Cobb develops early chemistry with Dak Prescott.

Saints | Marcus Davenport making progress    Thu May 23, 10:34 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Marcus Davenport (toe) was able to take part in individual drills during OTAs Thursday, May 23.

49ers | Nick Bosa has minor hamstring strain    Thu May 23, 04:54 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 hamstring strain and will not practice with the team over the remaining three weeks of the offseason program while receiving treatment.

Footballguys view: For a minor hamstring injury, Bosa is going to miss plenty of time. We should see him out there at or near full strength for training camp. Bosa has a bit of an injury history dating back to his days in college at Ohio State. We hope he can get healthy, stay healthy and make plays for the 49ers defense in 2019.

Seattle Seahawks DE Ziggy Ansah (shoulder) has a chance to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks knew when they picked up Ansah (to replace Frank Clark) they might have to wait to see him on the field. We'll likely see Ansah eased into action at some point during training camp.

Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes signed a two-year contract extension with the Bills Tuesday, May 21. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hughes was entering the final year of his contract and the Bills wanted to keep him around. He's their best pass rusher but hasn't had double-digit sacks in a single season since 2014. Hughes is coming off a 7.0 sack season for the Bills and will continue in his familiar role.

San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa (hamstring) was spotted clutching his hamstring after pulling up on a pass-rush drill Tuesday, May 21.

Footballguys view: The 49ers will be careful here. Bosa is their prized 2019 first-round pick and could have a huge impact for the 49ers defense this season. Hamstring injuries are known to linger, so expect Bosa to be quite limited if he does return for action in OTAs.

Eagles | Chris Long announces retirement    Sat May 18, 09:23 PM

Philadelphia Eagles DL Chris Long announced his retirement from the NFL Saturday, May 18.

Footballguys view: This move was expected by Long at some point this offseason. He finishes his 11-year career as a two-time Super Bowl Champion (Patriots, Eagles) with 70 sacks and 15 forced fumbles in 162 games. Long was a solid player on the field but a spectacular ambassador for the league and a great man off the field.

Seattle Seahawks DE Ziggy Ansah (shoulder) said he is happy with the progress he is making in his recovery from a shoulder injury but does not have a timetable for when he will return to the lineup.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks signed Ansah to a one-year deal with $6 million guaranteed as they look to replace DE Frank Clark. They'll move him along slowly and there are various speculative reports on when he'll be ready. Some think Ansah is good for the middle of training camp while there are others who say he could miss the first month of the season.
