Falcons | Atlanta likes Clemons linemen     Wed Apr 27, 04:43 PM

Clemson Des Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd could be options for the Atlanta Falcons with their No. 17 overall pick. The consensus of pundits has the Falcons taking Ohio State LB Darron Lee with that pick, however.

Footballguys view: The Falcons will look defense in almost any scenario. Lee would add a lot of speed to their linebacking corps, while Lawson and Dodd would be instant additions of pass rush punch and stout run defense from the edge.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson trade unlikely    Wed Apr 27, 12:39 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson is unlikely to be traded after the team fielded calls and experienced little action.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson is an elite defensive lineman who can play multiple spots along the defensive line. While he'll have to be paid to market value for his services, it's hard to believe teams expect more from a first round pick, even at a discount. This could be to the Jets gain in the long run.

Dolphins | Cameron Wake able to practice    Wed Apr 27, 12:42 AM

Miami Dolphins DE Cameron Wake (Achilles') was able to practice Tuesday, April 26, just six months after tearing his Achilles' tendon. He worked on a limited basis, and didn't participate in team or 7-on-7 drills, but still impressive fellow DE Andre Branch. 'That's awesome. He's definitely a vet in his league. He's been playing at a high level for a long period of time. He leads by example. He's the type of player you follow,' Branch said. Head coach Adam Gase said the goal is to have Wake 100 percent when training camp arrives.

Footballguys view: Wake is in the last year of his contract, but the Dolphins only have Mario Williams at defensive end after him when looking for proven players at the position. This terrific recovery timeline for Wake could help his case to get a one or two-year extension from the team before free agency next year.

  Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul confident for 2016    Tue Apr 26, 06:43 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) said he will be better than he was in 2015, adding that he is still the player he used to be. Pierre-Paul will wear a special glove on his injured hand in 2016 to help him rush better.

Footballguys view: The defensive end said he's recovered from his offseason surgery and has no limitations. Participating in minicamp will help him, too, he admitted, as he refused to participate in offseason workouts last year.

Saints | Tavaris Barnes released    Mon Apr 25, 05:25 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Tavaris Barnes was released Monday, April 25.

Bengals | Michael Johnson was injured last year     Mon Apr 25, 03:15 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DE Michael Johnson (back) was hampered by a back issue much of last season. He's feeling healthy now, though.

Footballguys view: That explains a lot. Last year, Johnson entered the season with knee problems but it was this back issue that kept his production down. That's two years in a row with disappointing numbers. We'll see if a healthy Johnson can get back on track in 2016.

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson isn't being actively shopped, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan.'s Rich Cimini opined that the Jets are interested in moving Wilkerson.

Footballguys view: This goes against every report about Wilkerson since the franchise tag was put on him. The Jets may just be playing hard to get in this negotiation process.

49ers | Glenn Dorsey making progress    Wed Apr 20, 11:09 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Glenn Dorsey (knee) is making 'great progress,' according to general manager Trent Baalke, as the defensive tackle makes his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. However, it is too soon to say if he'll be ready for the regular season opener. 'I'm never going to give a definitive because you don't know,' Baalke said. 'You could always have a setback, but right now he's made great progress. Looks good.'

Footballguys view: The Niners could use the help defensively, but they won't push him and risk setting him back. If he can do some work during camp, that will be a good sign, but we are guessing the Niners will plan not to have him for a chunk of the season, just in case.

Texans | J.J. Watt close to full health    Wed Apr 20, 04:53 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin, abdomen) is close to completing his rehabilitation from groin and abdominal injuries that required surgery in January. Watt said he feels good and is close to 100% as he participates in the Texans' offseason conditioning program.

Footballguys view: The Texans would like to replicate the plan the Broncos won the Super Bowl with, winning with defense and a mediocre offense. They have the pieces for the offense, courtesy of signing Brock Osweiler, and Watt is a vital piece of the defense that has to do the heavy lifting.

Bills | Jarius Wynn moving to linebacker    Wed Apr 20, 12:41 AM

Buffalo Bills DE Jarius Wynn (knee) said in a radio interview Tuesday, April 19, that he has dropped 20 pounds and will play outside linebacker in 2016. He is making his way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, and he missed the 2015 season as a result. Wynn has been a career-long 3-4 defensive end and 4-3 defensive end.

Footballguys view: Rex Ryan finds value in guys who can do more than one thing and is adept at finding getting guys to play in positions and ways they normally don't. That said, we're not expecting a ton immediately from Wynn and continue to be concerned by the Bills defense coming into this year coached by an underwhelming Rob Ryan.

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) still is working out nine times a week this offseason but that is down from the 10 workouts he would do last offseason.

Footballguys view: In other news; oxygen is important. Yes, Watt is working hard...that's all this guy does. Expect him to lead a strong Texans defense once again in 2016.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson doesn't show    Mon Apr 18, 12:26 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson didn't show up for the start of the team's offseason program Monday, April 18, according to a source. He has yet to sign his $15.7 million franchise tag tender.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson will likely skip the entire offseason program for the second straight season, and he'll play under the tender in 2016 if a long-term deal isn't reached by July 15.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman among breakout candidates    Sun Apr 17, 09:15 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman, WR Justin Hardy, LB, Vic Beasley, DT Grady Jarrett, CB Jalen Collins and FS Robenson Therezie are the six players head coach Dan Quinn is counting on to elevate their games in 2016.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to remember that Coleman began the 2015 season as the starter ahead of Devonta Freeman. This season, Freeman should be the lead back but Coleman is too talented to keep on the sideline. That's why the Falcons could use a RBBC with a near 50/50 split--directly impacting both RBs fantasy value.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson not expected at workouts    Sun Apr 17, 05:34 PM

Footballguys view: Wilkerson is still rehabbing his broken leg and has not signed his franchise tender offer. He's been in the discussion when consider players the Jets could end up trading away. Wilkerson is seeking a long-term deal, and the Jets don't seem like they want to commit.

49ers | Muhammad Wilkerson the San Fran treat?    Fri Apr 15, 01:08 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson would love to play for the San Francisco 49ers, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson has a $15.7 million one-year tender as the Jets franchise-tagged player this offseason. The team has put him on the trade block as they've shown little interest in signing Wilkerson to the long-term deal he wants. The 49ers have a ton of cap space and could easily accommodate a contract the size that Wilkerson desires.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson in No. 1 pick offer    Fri Apr 15, 11:01 AM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson was part of a serious offer to the Tennessee Titans for the No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, and the deal was getting close, according to sources. The Los Angeles Rams ended up striking a deal for the pick.

Footballguys view: The Jets want to move up for a QB, but they couldn't outmatch the haul the Rams offered to the Titans. Wilkerson is their franchise-tagged player, but he's on the trade block as the team is showing no interest in signing him to a new long-term deal.

NFL | Prospect Shawn Oakman arrested    Wed Apr 13, 10:23 PM

Baylor DE Shawn Oakman was arrested Wednesday, April 13, on sexual assault charges in Texas, accused by a female student. He was released by the police department after being charged. One NFL executive told that Oakman is 'undraftable' with the 2016 NFL Draft so near and the situation up in the air.

Footballguys view: With these charges looming so close to the draft, we'd be shocked if a team takes a chance on Oakman. He was once considered a sure-fire first-round pick, but he had an uninspiring final season at Baylor that dropped his stock to the second round at best.

Dolphins | Miami hosting Kevin Dodd    Wed Apr 13, 04:30 PM

Clemson DE Kevin Dodd is visiting the Miami Dolphins Wednesday, April 13, according to a source. Dodd also recently visited the San Francisco 49ers and Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Dodd is an option for the Dolphins with the 13th-overall pick. A quick and powerful player, Dodd has the ability to rush the passer from the outside or split linemen down the middle. His upside as potential is at the All-Pro level.

Chargers | Corey Liuget ready for offseason    Tue Apr 12, 02:33 PM

Colts | Henry Anderson progressing slowly    Mon Apr 11, 11:08 PM

Indianapolis Colts DE Henry Anderson (knee) is slowly progressing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament suffered in November, and his availability for the start of training camp is in serious jeopardy. Despite missing the final seven games last season, Anderson still finished 18th among all 3-4 scheme defensive linemen in tackles in 2015.

Buccaneers | Two players sign tenders     Mon Apr 11, 03:04 PM

Tampa Buccaneers WR Russell Shepard and DE Jacquies Smith signed their restricted free-agent tender and exclusive-rights free-agent tender, respectively, Monday, April 11.

Footballguys view: Shepard has incredible athleticism, but he's not much of a fantasy factor. The Bucs are looking for a WR3 behind Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson, and Shepard will be in that mix.

Bears | Muhammad Wilkerson unlikely to Chicago    Thu Apr 7, 02:28 PM

The Chicago Bears are unlikely to trade for New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson. The Jets won't just give him away, and Bears general manager Ryan Pace is putting a big premium on draft picks this year, so the chances of a trade happening appear slim, in the opinion of the Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

Footballguys view: They could use him, but the Jets will want to at least swap first round picks and the Bears aren't budging. The Jets aren't looking like they think they can keep Wilkerson long-term, and are trying to get some value for him.

Buccaneers | Robert Ayers could be cut in 2017    Wed Apr 6, 11:07 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Robert Ayers might be a potential one-and-done candidate to be cut in 2017 if the team scores well in the 2016 NFL Draft at the defensive end position. He signed a three-year, $19.5 million contract, but all of the skill guarantees are in the final year of the deal. He has a $3 million injury guarantee in Year 2, which the Bucs could get out of if they find the proper replacement.

Broncos | Jared Crick signs with Denver    Wed Apr 6, 01:16 PM

Free-agent DE Jared Crick (Texans) signed a two-year deal with the Denver Broncos Wednesday, April 6.

Footballguys view: Crick started opposite J.J. Watt in Houston but he wasn't able to generate much pressure. He'll serve as a rotational player for the Broncos defensive line, and we think they'll still look for Malik Jackson's replacement in the draft.

Cowboys | Jason Jones still an option    Mon Apr 4, 07:17 PM

Free-agent DE Jason Jones (Lions) is still an option for the Dallas Cowboys even though they re-signed DE Jack Crawford, according to a source. Jones would need to accept a deal close to the one-year, $1.1 million deal Crawford received.

Footballguys view: Jones has been a solid starter for the Lions over the last two years. He would help strengthen the Cowboys defense against the run and create some pressure as a pass-rusher as well.

Lions | Wallace Gilberry signing    Mon Apr 4, 05:34 PM

Free-agent DE Wallace Gilberry (Bengals) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Detroit Lions Monday, April 4.

Footballguys view: Gilberry is not the same player he used to be..even as a rotational pass-rusher. He's a depth move for the Lions and should have little impact in 2016.

Cowboys | Jack Crawford re-signs    Mon Apr 4, 05:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Jack Crawford re-signed to a one-year deal with the Cowboys Monday, April 4, according to a source. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Crawford had four sacks for the Cowboys last year, and his role should be the same (maybe a bit smaller) this season. He's a reserve pass-rusher who will play in a rotation of some sort. When he's on the field, Crawford is a liability against the run.

Bears | Chicago eyeing Muhammad Wilkerson?    Sun Apr 3, 03:22 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson could be pursued by the Chicago Bears as the NFL Draft approaches, according to's Rich Cimini.

Footballguys view: Cimini believes that the Jets would trade Wilkerson in a heartbeat if the Bears offered their 11th-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft. The Bears have done a good job in free agency and have a revamped defense which should get even stronger with the right picks in the draft. Perhaps giving up their first-round pick is something Bears GM Ryan Pace feels comfortable with if he can add a talent like Wilkerson.

Seahawks | Chris Clemons re-signs    Fri Apr 1, 04:44 PM

The Seattle Seahawks re-signed DE Chris Clemons to an undisclosed deal Friday, April 1.

Texans | J.J. Watt had five groin tears    Thu Mar 31, 02:34 PM

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (hand, groin, abdomen, back) had five torn core muscles surgically repaired in the offseason. According to a source, Watt had partially torn left and right abdominals and a partially torn right adductor longus. He also had a fully torn left adductor longus and a fully torn left adductor pectineus, which are two of the three muscles that connect the pelvic bone to the left thigh bone.

Footballguys view: Watt was far more beat up than we thought he was. They need him back to 100 percent to keep this defense playing at the high level it has the last few years.

Texans | J.J. Watt had herniated disk    Thu Mar 31, 12:23 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (hand, groin, back) revealed that he played the second half of the season with a herniated disk in his back along with the groin and hand injuries he suffered late in the year.

Footballguys view: The Texans need Watt to be healthy if they are to lean on the defense as they did last year.

Steelers | Jack Crawford to visit    Tue Mar 29, 12:35 PM

Free-agent DE Jack Crawford (Cowboys) will visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

Footballguys view: Crawford has a small handful (6) sacks over the last two years with the Cowboys. The former fifth-round pick (Raiders, 2012) could latch on with the Steelers as a rotational pass-rusher.

Saints | Cameron Jordan restructures    Tue Mar 29, 08:45 AM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan restructured his contract Tuesday, March 29, to convert $2.735 million of his $3.5 million base salary into a signing bonus.

Footballguys view: The Saints needed to do something to clear enough cap room for DT Nick Fairley. This move should be enough to make that possible.

Cowboys | Jason Jones visiting Dallas    Mon Mar 28, 11:34 AM

Free-agent DE Jason Jones (Lions) is visiting the Dallas Cowboys Monday, March 28.
