Jets | Believed to have exercised Muhammad Wilkerson's option    Thu Apr 17, 08:23 PM

It is believed the New York Jets have exercised the fifth-year option in DE Muhammad Wilkerson's contract.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson has played very well since coming into the league and the Jets are wise to do this (if they did). He will look good in green for a long time to come.

The San Diego Chargers have officially exercised the fifth-year option in DE Corey Liuget's contract.

  Texans | Pick up J.J. Watt's option    Thu Apr 17, 08:19 PM

The Houston Texans have officially exercised the fifth-year option in DE J.J. Watt's contract.

Footballguys view: It's smart to lock up the best defensive lineman in the game, even if you want to draft Jadeveon Clowney as well. Watt is a freak and the Texans do not want him destroying offensive lines for anyone other than themselves.

The New York Jets are keeping tabs on Missouri DE Michael Sam. The team has spoken to him several times in recent weeks.

Lions | Host Jadeveon Clowney     Wed Apr 16, 02:28 PM

Updating a previous report, the Detroit Lions hosted South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney for a visit Wednesday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Clowney with Ndamukong Suh on the Lions would be fun. However, they'd have to move up from 10th overall to secure his services.

The Miami Dolphins are scheduled to meet with Georgia State OL Ulrick John and Marist DE Terence Fede.

NFL | Michael Sam receiving interest    Wed Apr 16, 12:10 PM

The Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, Atlanta Falcons, Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns and New York Jets have shown the most interest in Missouri DE Michael Sam leading up to the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Sam should be a late-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. He broke out as a senior at Missouri with 11 sacks, largely in part due to his hustle and motor. Sam is not an elite athlete, and he looks to be more of a part-time player at the pro level.

Jaguars | Gus Bradley gushes over Jadeveon Clowney, Khalil Mack    Tue Apr 15, 05:26 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley has been very impressed with South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney and Buffalo LB Khalil Mack. 'Physically, his appearance, you don't see many guys that are built like him, with the size and the speed and the agility that he has,' Bradley said of Clowney. Bradley also isn't worried about the work ethic of Clowney.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars may wait on a quarterback in the first round to select either Clowney or Mack. Both are elite pass-rushers who can make an immediate impact in the NFL. Mack is better in coverage, and Clowney is the more rare athletic prospect.

Dolphins | Expect big things from Dion Jordan    Tue Apr 15, 01:46 PM

Miami Dolphins general manager Dennis Hickey is expecting big things from DE Dion Jordan in his second season this year. "He's a very talented player and this is a big offseason for him," Hickey said. "Last year with his shoulder he didn't have an opportunity to have a full offseason. That's so important. Developing and getting your body -- not just the physical reps but the mental reps -- getting in the weight room and all those things is such an important part to get these guys ready to make that jump.'

Footballguys view: The Dolphins recently rejected a trade offer from the Philadelphia Eagles for Jordan. He's a talented pass-rusher with a nice combination of power and speed.

Lions | Jadeveon Clowney to visit    Mon Apr 14, 02:07 PM

The Detroit Lions are scheduled to meet with South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney before the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Clowney going to the Lions would be unfair for opposing quarterbacks. He'd be a fine fit and give them another elite level pass-rusher. The Lions have considered moving up for WR Sammy Watkins, and they'd have to do the same for Clowney. He's unlikely to be available at 10th overall.

NFL | Jadeveon Clowney done working out    Mon Apr 14, 10:15 AM

South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney is shutting down his pre-draft workouts to avoid risk of injury.

Footballguys view: Clowney is a rare prospect who should be a top-5 pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Some question his motivation, but nobody questions his upside. Clowney is certainly an option to be selected number one overall by the Houston Texans.

Rams | Could choose between three    Mon Apr 14, 08:53 AM

The St. Louis Rams could choose between South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney, Clemson WR Sammy Watkins and Auburn OT Greg Robinson with the second pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Rams could use any of those players. Adding Clowney would be ridiculous as their pass-rush is already top notch with Robert Quinn and Chris Long. Watkins would be their best wide receiver if added. Robinson would give them insurance in case left tackle Jake Long gets banged up (again). He's also a better starting right tackle prospect than Joe Barksdale.

Eagles | Made trade offer for Dion Jordan    Mon Apr 14, 12:00 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly offered a second-round draft pick and LB Brandon Graham to the Miami Dolphins for LB Dion Jordan, but were rebuffed, a league source said.

Footballguys view: Graham is not a fit for the team's 3-4 defense. If they can't trade him, the team may just release Graham. He's in the final year of his contract, and Graham has a $3.3 million cap number. There's actually more in dead money left on his deal ($3.4 million) than he'll draw in annual salary this year.

Dolphins | Rejected deal for Dion Jordan    Sun Apr 13, 11:59 PM

The Miami Dolphins reportedly rejected a trade offer from the Philadelphia Eagles for LB Dion Jordan, according to a league source. The Eagles offered a second-round draft pick and LB Brandon Graham.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins could hold out for the Eagles first-round pick. We don't think they would surrender that even though Jordan is highly thought of by Chip Kelly. Jordan played for Kelly during his time in college at Oregon.

Eagles | Tried to land Dion Jordan    Thu Apr 10, 04:02 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly made a play to trade for Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan roughly two months ago, according to a respected league source. The Eagles are believed to have offered a second-round pick and LB Brandon Graham for Jordan. The Eagles would have picked up the remainder of Jordan's four-year, $20.572 million deal.

Footballguys view: We knew the Eagles weren't quite done with their moves (although they might be now) and we knew the Dolphins were rumored to be looking to dump Jordan. It's enormously premature for the Dolphins to do so, and even more insane given that they moved up for him but the Dolphins never seemed to know what to do with him. The Eagles' offer was generous so perhaps Miami was less eager than reported.

Bills | Sign Jarius Wynn    Tue Apr 8, 01:59 PM

Updating a previous report, the Buffalo Bills signed DE Jarius Wynn (Cowboys) Tuesday, April 8. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Rams | Kony Ealy visits    Fri Apr 4, 08:30 PM

The St. Louis Rams met with Missouri DE Kony Ealy Friday, April 4.

Footballguys view: Ealy is an option for the Rams in the first round, specifically with their 13th overall pick. They also have the 2nd overall pick, but Ealy should still be on the board after 10. Ealy has drawn comparisons to DE Robert Quinn (Rams) because of his initial quickness off the edge as a pass-rusher. He can play defensive end in a 4-3, and most believe he could stand up and play outside linebacker in a 3-4 too.

Giants | Robert Ayers could push for starting job    Thu Apr 3, 09:10 PM

New York Giants DE Robert Ayers could push for a starting defensive end job of DE Damontre Moore is not able to handle the job. Ayers is expected to be part of a rotation if he does not start.

Footballguys view: Someone needs to replace Justin Tuck both as a defensive leader and more literally at defensive end. Ayers is coming off a career high 5.5 sacks, but will need to up that total to help the Giants get over the loss of Tuck.

Jaguars | No meeting with Jadeveon Clowney    Wed Apr 2, 04:33 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars did not meet privately with South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney after his pro day. Jaguars management returned to Jacksonville.

Footballguys view: That doesn't mean much. The team could have a private workout scheduled with Clowney at some point before the draft.

The Washington Redskins could consider releasing DE Stephen Bowen this offseason in order to create just under $2 million in salary cap space. The team could also make him a June 1 cut and get around $4.5 million in salary cap space but would add $2.5 million to their 2015 salary cap.

NFL | Analysts impressed with Jadeveon Clowney's workout    Wed Apr 2, 02:57 PM

NFL Network analysts Mike Mayock and Daniel Jeremiah said they were impressed with how South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney looked during his Pro Day Wednesday, April 2. Clowney participated in defensive line and linebacker drills during the workout, but the analysts said he will be pursuing the quarterback most of the time. Mayock was impressed with the athleticism Clowney showed during the drills.

Footballguys view: At the end of the day it's just a workout. We're impressed with Clowney's film as that's what matters most. Even though his 2013 was less productive than 2012, Clowney still created pressure while getting double- and triple-teamed by opponents. His freakish athleticism and violent playing style give him superstar upside in the NFL.

NFL | Jadeveon Clowney thinks he should be top pick    Wed Apr 2, 01:49 PM

South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney said he believes he should be the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: It's hard to argue with him. Clowney is freakishly athletic, strong, has violent hands, and can get to the quarterback in a hurry. He's certainly an option for the Texans at number one overall.

Texans | Have dinner with Jadeveon Clowney    Wed Apr 2, 01:30 PM

Falcons | Will work out Jadeveon Clowney    Wed Apr 2, 12:39 PM

South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney said he has a workout scheduled with the Atlanta Falcons.

Footballguys view: The Falcons may move up in the draft to add Clowney. He'd instantly be their best pass-rusher and upgrade the defense. The Falcons currently have the 6th overall pick, but could get up to number two overall to secure Clowney's services.

Rams | GM attends Jadeveon Clowney's Pro Day    Wed Apr 2, 12:27 PM

St. Louis Rams general manager Les Snead attended the South Carolina Pro Day Wednesday, April 2, to watch DE Jadeveon Clowney work out.

Footballguys view: The Rams need to do their homework on Clowney. Thanks to Washington, the Rams have the number two overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. They could trade back if another team wants to move up to draft a quarterback, or they could sit tight and select a player like Clowney or OT Jake Matthews.

Raiders | GM attends Jadeveon Clowney's Pro Day    Wed Apr 2, 12:25 PM

Oakland Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie attended the South Carolina Pro Day Wednesday, April 2, to watch DE Jadeveon Clowney work out.

Footballguys view: The Raiders have the 5th overall pick, but there are scenarios where Clowney could fall to that point. He would instantly upgrade their pass-rush, and Clowney could be a star from day one.

Link to story

Texans | Have strong presence at Jadeveon Clowney's Pro Day    Wed Apr 2, 12:22 PM

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith, head coach Bill O'Brien and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel attended the South Carolina Pro Day Wednesday, April 2, to watch DE Jadeveon Clowney work out.

Footballguys view: The Texans have the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Clowney is certainly in play to be the top selection. He's an elite pass-rusher who plays with a fierce and violent style. There are concerns about his motivation after a 2013 season that was far less productive (on paper) than his breakout 2012 season at South Carolina.

Jaguars | GM, coach attend Jadeveon Clowney's Pro Day    Wed Apr 2, 12:19 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell and head coach Gus Bradley attended the South Carolina Pro Day Wednesday, April 2, to watch DE Jadeveon Clowney work out. Defensive line coach Todd Wash also attended the workout.

Footballguys view: With the 3rd overall pick, Jacksonville could be where Clowney winds up. He has the potential to be one of the best pass-rushers in the game from day one.

Giants | Robert Ayers signs    Wed Apr 2, 10:48 AM

The New York Giants signed free-agent DE Robert Ayers (Broncos) to an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: Ayers is an edge-setting defensive end. He's not much of a pass-rusher, but could work as a part-time player for the Giants. He's the third former Broncos player to join the Giants this offseason, joining CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and WR Trindon Holliday.
