Ravens | Three Ravens placed on injury lists     Thu Jul 20, 05:55 PM

Baltimore Ravens OG Jermaine Eluemunor (undisclosed) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Thursday, July 20. Additionally, WR Aaron Bailey (undisclosed) and DE Patrick Ricard (undisclosed) were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson still on the block    Thu Jul 20, 11:11 AM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson is still available for trade, but it's unlikely the team cuts him.

Footballguys view: They won't cough him up for free and will try to move him right up until the trade deadline. Right now, considering his attitude and lack of impact in 2016. The Jets may not find a partner until he proves both issues are in the past. Of course, the Jets are unlikely to extend his contract in any event so teams might wait for the offseason.

Jaguars | Dante Fowler arrested    Wed Jul 19, 01:05 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars DE Dante Fowler Jr. was arrested on misdemeanor charges of simple battery and criminal mischief after an altercation Tuesday, July 18, in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Footballguys view: Fowler got into the altercation after a man criticized his driving. He's gotten several traffic tickets according to reports and may be facing league discipline for this incident.

Bills | Shaq Lawson impressive    Tue Jul 18, 11:02 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson has looked 'fantastic with his hand in the ground coming off the edge so far,' according to fellow defensive end Jerry Hughes.

Footballguys view: A 4-3 defensive end in college at Clemson, Lawson was drafted in the first round last year and played outside linebacker for Rex Ryan. With Ryan gone and Sean McDermott taking over, Lawson will go back to his more natural position.

Eagles | Vinny Curry in a prove-it season    Tue Jul 18, 10:29 AM

Philadelphia Eagles DE Vinny Curry is entering a pivotal year with the club as they could cut the 29-year-old next offseason and save $5 million in cap space.

Footballguys view: Curry was supposed to do more last year, but he registered only 2.5 sacks and fell out of favor with the coaching staff. The Eagles added Chris Long in free agency and selected Derek Barnett in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Both are signs that Curry's days as a significant contributor with the Eagles are numbered.

Eagles | Brandon Graham had a good year    Tue Jul 18, 10:25 AM

Philadelphia Eagles DE Brandon Graham generated a lot of pressure and was excellent against the run last season.

Footballguys view: Graham flourished last year playing the in the 'wide 9' defense of Jim Schwartz. The 5.5 sacks he posted in 2016 aren't going to blow you away, but Graham was a sound tackler who led the NFL in QB hurries (40) in 2016. Projecting him for double-digit sacks this year (while maintaining strong tackling numbers) isn't outlandish.

Eagles | Derek Barnett pushing Chris Long    Tue Jul 18, 10:25 AM

Philadelphia Eagles DE Derek Barnett is pushing DE Chris Long for the starting job. Long is expected to be the starter for now.

Footballguys view: Barnett was one of the most productive players to come out in the 2017 NFL draft. He broke Reggie White's all-time sack record at the University of Tennessee, and Barnett has the makings of a star pro. Even if he doesn't win the starting job, Barnett should get plenty of snaps as a pass rushing specialist for the Eagles.

Rams | Three Rams could receive extensions    Mon Jul 17, 08:45 PM

Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald, LB Alec Ogletree and CB Lamarcus Joyner are players that the Rams are interested in signing to contract extensions.

Footballguys view: Donald skipped voluntary work this offseason but he did show up for mandatory minicamp. He was non-committal when asked about a potential holdout in training camp. A first-round pick in 2014, Donald is under the team's control through the 2018 season.

Raiders | Shilique Calhoun noticeably bigger    Sat Jul 15, 11:53 AM

Oakland Raiders LB Shilique Calhoun heads into training camp about 20 pounds heavier than he was at the end of the 2016 season, according to Eddie Paskal of

Footballguys view: A third-round pick out of Michigan State in 2016, Calhoun's rookie season was cut to 10 games due to injury. When healthy, Calhoun has multiple moves to get after the passer and good burst when closing in on the quarterback. He's competing to be a starter in 2017.

NFL | Multiple teams interested in Greg Hardy    Sat Jul 15, 10:27 AM

Several NFL teams have expressed interest in free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Cowboys), according to agent Drew Rosenhaus, although no deal appears imminent.

Footballguys view: Hardy was out of the league last year due to his off-field issues. There may be some interest but we don't see teams falling all over themselves to add an oft-troubled player like Hardy.

Bills | Shaq Lawson comfortable with defense    Mon Jul 10, 06:57 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson said he is comfortable with the defense that head coach Sean McDermott is bringing to the team because it is the same scheme he played at Clemson.

Footballguys view: He was a 4-3 defensive end in college but Rex Ryan wanted him to play outside linebacker in the Bills 3-4 last season. That just didn't fit his game and Lawson struggled through injuries as a rookie. More comfortable and in a better fit, Lawson can thrive as an edge-setting defensive end.

49ers | Solomon Thomas should have early role    Mon Jul 10, 06:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Solomon Thomas is expected to be part of the defensive line rotation this season and likely will be an inside pass rusher.

Footballguys view: The 49ers made Thomas the no3 overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft for a reason. He's built for a large workload and has the tenacity that should make him a nightmare for opponents. Thomas has strength, snap anticipation and pursuit speed/burst to be a playmaker.

Jets | Dylan Donahue may push for playing time    Sat Jul 8, 02:28 PM

New York Jets LB Dylan Donahue could push LB Lorenzo Mauldin for playing time at outside linebacker during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Jets have rising second-year OLB Jordan Jenkins to take up the most snaps at outside linebacker, but he doesn't have the pass rush talent of Mauldin or Donahue. Donahue seems to be a favorite of outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene, so that could help him if the battle for playing time is close.

Raiders | Jihad Ward may be PUP candidate    Fri Jul 7, 05:38 PM

Oakland Raiders DE Jihad Ward (foot) could be a candidate for the Physically Unable to Perform list if he is not ready to practice when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: His surgery was supposedly minor, but the team will be very cautious with him. He was a starter for most of his rookie year, so his presence will be missed if he's not ready for the season opener.

Rams | Teammate supports Aaron Donald    Fri Jul 7, 04:08 PM

Los Angeles Rams DT Michael Brockers said he believes DT Aaron Donald deserves a new contract and will respect any decision Donald makes in terms of a possible holdout.

Footballguys view: Donald deserves to be among the highest paid defensive lineman in the game and it makes sense to want to lock that pay in now instead of risking the loss of the big payday if he suffers a serious injury. The Rams defense is switching to a 3-4 under Wade Phillips, so this is important time for Donald to missing if he has a protracted contract dispute. Stay tuned.

Browns | Myles Garrett doing well    Fri Jul 7, 04:08 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) said his injured foot is doing fine. He likely will be limited during the early part of training camp because of the injury.

Footballguys view: Garrett's foot injury was not just a minor nick if it will still be limiting him early in camp. It could come up again during the season and affects his value in IDP redraft leagues. We'll be watching this closely.

Raiders | Jihad Ward had surgery    Thu Jul 6, 04:29 PM

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders DE Jihad Ward (foot) underwent minor surgery on his injured foot this offseason. While the Raiders will not rush him back, he is expected to be ready by mid-August, however.

Footballguys view: As Auric Goldfinger told James Bond, "Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. The third time it's enemy action" - or in NFL terms, third time is cause for concern. Ward had surgery on the same foot in 2015, then had a knee operation in 2016. Here we are in 2017 and it's another date with a surgeon. He didn't have much impact in his rookie year and this won't help his chances to change that in the coming season.

Eagles | Vinny Curry had sprained MCL    Mon Jul 3, 04:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles DE Vinny Curry (knee) suffered and played through a medial collateral ligament sprain last season. Curry aggravated the injury and admitted he was not able to play at full health in 2016.

Footballguys view: The Eagles added Timmy Jernigan and first-round pick Derek Barnett to an already strong defensive line this offseason. Their ability to keep everyone fresh and generate relentless pressure and penetration in Jim Schwartz's defense will increase and possibly push them into the top third of the league. If Curry is better than he was last year, that will only add to their profile.

Titans | Karl Klug may miss some time    Mon Jul 3, 02:36 PM

Tennessee Titans DT Karl Klug (Achilles') may miss part of training camp and/or the regular season if he needs more time to recover from his Achilles' injury, as Jim Wyatt of alluded to.

Footballguys view: Klug has been a rotational contributor, but he's not a key piece of the defensive line. The Titans had a rash of bad luck injuries in OTAs, but it doesn't sound like they will be lingering problems into camp.

Bills | Shaq Lawson expected to be more comfortable    Sun Jul 2, 04:28 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Shaq Lawson is expected to be more comfortable in the team's new 4-3 defensive alignment because he will be lining up at defensive end. Lawson never felt truly comfortable as an outside linebacker in the 3-4 defensive alignment.

Footballguys view: Lawson was limited to 10 games during his rookie year in 2016. The first-round pick had a shoulder injury coming out of Clemson and he had a minor knee procedure this offseason. The team needs him to have a breakout season and avoid any sort of sophomore slump in 2017. Lawson has a powerful lower body and violent striking hands. The best part of his game can be featured as an edge-setting defensive end.

Cowboys | Demarcus Lawrence expected to start    Sun Jul 2, 10:48 AM

Dallas Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence is expected to be the team's starting left defensive end entering training camp.

Footballguys view: He's a starter for the Cowboys, and they're looking for Lawrence to bounce back after an injury/suspension shortened 2016. Lawrence is a starter for the Cowboys, but fantasy owners should only consider him a boom/bust DL4 in IDP leagues.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney healthy, loving role    Thu Jun 29, 09:56 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (ankle) said he is healthy after dealing with a sore ankle during OTAs, and he is enjoying the defensive schemes that have him lining up all over the field.

Footballguys view: Clowney should once again wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks this year. J.J. Watt is back healthy, and the Texans defense should give opponents nightmares on a weekly basis.

Eagles | Philly DEs will be part of rotation    Sat Jun 24, 04:14 PM

Philadelphia Eagles DEs Derek Barnett, Brandon Graham, Chris Long and Vinny Curry are expected to be a part of a rotation at the defensive ends spots during the regular season.

Footballguys view: The Eagles have a nice mix of experience and youth at this position. We love the upside of Barnett, one of the most productive players coming out of college in 2017. Barnett finished his college career as the all-time leader in sacks at the University of Tennessee. His technique and hustle could help him make an early impact as a pro.

Carolina Panthers DE Mario Addison said he expects to receive more snaps this season but does not care if he starts. 'I feel they are going to give me more snaps,' Addison said. 'That's good. The more snaps the better. I'm glad that I gained their trust and they believe that I can get the job done. Whenever they throw me out there I am going to make it happen.'

Titans | Karl Klug working hard on return    Wed Jun 21, 04:37 PM

49ers | DeForest Buckner probably will see less snaps    Mon Jun 19, 08:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE DeForest Buckner played 1,005 snaps in 2016, but defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said he would like to see Buckner play around 500 to 600 snaps this season to make sure he can make an impact when he is on the field. Buckner said he was tired at times last season but would not be taken out of the game.

Footballguys view: Buckner should be more effective with fewer least that's what his coaches are counting on. A first-round pick in 2016, Buckner had 6.0 sacks last year and could easily match or best that number this year even with fewer snaps.

Browns | Myles Garrett in walking boot     Mon Jun 19, 04:27 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) is wearing a walking boot as he deals with a lateral foot sprain.

Footballguys view: Garrett has been diagnosed with a lateral foot sprain. He's in the boot right now and should be for a month or so. However, Garrett should be ready for the start of training camp.

Vikings | Danielle Hunter poised to start    Mon Jun 19, 11:20 AM

Minnesota Vikings DE Danielle Hunter is in line to start at left defensive end with DE Brian Robison moving to a situational role. Hunter had 12.5 sacks as a reserve last season, and he's likely to play in at least 80 percent of the snaps this year.

Dolphins | Charles Harris disruptive    Mon Jun 19, 10:35 AM

Miami Dolphins DE Charles Harris' quick first step was problematic for the team's offensive linemen in organized team activities and minicamp. He should make an impact in 2017 despite a limited role, in the opinion of beat writer James Walker.

Footballguys view: In college at Missouri, Harris stood out because of his agility, burst and athleticism when getting after the passer. The Dolphins first-round pick in 2017, he's got an array of pass-rushing moves that most young players just don't have. Harris is likely to get onto the field as a part-time pass-rusher during his rookie season.

Browns | Myles Garrett may be limited early    Sun Jun 18, 04:34 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) could be limited during the early part of training camp because he is recovering from a foot injury.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Browns are going to take it easy on the first-overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. We'll know more about his availability when training camp gets closer.

Link to story

Browns | Myles Garrett should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 17, 04:16 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) has been diagnosed with a left lateral foot sprain and is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: That's good news for the Browns. The 2017 no1 overall pick is in a walking boot and will obviously take it easy during the break. Expect the Browns to ease him into camp when he's ready to participate.

Cowboys | Charles Tapper loses weight    Sat Jun 17, 08:26 AM

Dallas Cowboys DE Charles Tapper has lost nearly 20 pounds since the end of last season and is down to 11 percent body fat from 13 percent in an attempt to increase his agility.

Footballguys view: Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli wants Tapper to shift from an interior spot on the defensive line to a spot where he lines up on the outside shoulder of the tackle. A fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2016, Tapper missed his entire rookie season due to injury. With his back problems behind him, Tapper is likely to be a key piece of the Cowboys rotation up front.

Rams | Nothing new with Aaron Donald contract talks    Fri Jun 16, 04:10 PM

Los Angeles Rams general manager Les Snead said DT Aaron Donald is still a priority for the Rams but there is nothing new to report in terms of contract extension negotiations. Donald skipped all of the organized team activities because of his contract situation.

Footballguys view: He showed up to mandatory minicamp so as to not get fined. The Rams picked up Donald's fifth-year option, so the team controls his rights for the next two seasons. Rather than wait, it would behoove the Rams to get an extension done with one of the best in the business.

Browns | Myles Garrett in walking boot    Fri Jun 16, 03:46 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) was seen in a walking boot Friday, June 16, and has been in one since suffering his injury two days earlier. The Browns have yet to provide an update on his injury, but there is a chance one may be coming later Friday.

Footballguys view: The injury was originally considered minor, but the walking boot is a bit concerning. Garrett had some leg problems in college at Texas A&M. We'll know more about his training camp availability when the Browns give an update.

Broncos | Adam Gotsis had knee procedure    Thu Jun 15, 07:41 PM

Denver Broncos DT Adam Gotsis (knee) underwent a knee scope Thursday, June 15, and will return for the first week of training camp, according to head coach Vance Joseph.

Footballguys view: The second-year defensive end was looking good in minicamp up to this point. Coming off an ACL injury that ended his college career at Georgia Tech, any sort of knee problem is a concern. He should be back by training camp, then we'll see if Gotsis can regain the momentum he was building this spring.

Browns | Myles Garrett not seriously hurt    Thu Jun 15, 01:40 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) is fine after injuring his foot at minicamp Wednesday, June 14, according to a source. Garrett did not participate in minicamp Thursday, June 15.

Browns | Myles Garrett still out Thursday    Thu Jun 15, 11:32 AM

Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) remains out of practice Thursday, June 15, as his left foot injury is still being evaluated. The team doesn't think it's a Lisfranc injury.

Footballguys view: A bit of an ignominious start for this year's first overall pick, but a very Cleveland Browns outcome. The club is happy he was able to walk off the field Wednesday after he hurt his foot during a simulated sack of Brock Osweiler. He was down for a moment and needed to be helped up by a trainer and coach Hue Jackson. The Browns are off now until the start of training camp, so we won't know what shape Garrett is in any time soon.

Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (foot) suffered a left foot injury during practice Wednesday, June 14, but head coach Hue Jackson said he thinks Garrett will be fine.

Footballguys view: The Browns should take it easy on the no1 overall pick as he's a bit banged up. If this is a minor injury, then they should just shut him down for minicamp and get him ready for the start of training camp.

Browns | Myles Garrett limps off    Wed Jun 14, 04:50 PM

Texans | J.J. Watt feeling good    Wed Jun 14, 02:49 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) said his surgically repaired back is feeling great and that he has not suffered any setbacks during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: All reports this offseason have been positive about Watt as he continues to recover from back surgery. Projecting 15 sacks or more for Watt in 2017 is not outlandish.

Seahawks | Dion Jordan had knee operation    Tue Jun 13, 07:49 PM

Seattle Seahawks DE Dion Jordan (knee) underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee three weeks ago. The timetable for his return is unclear at this point.

Footballguys view: Jordan missed all of last year due to knee problems, and the year before that he was out due to suspension. A top-5 pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Jordan has been a major bust. The Seahawks could put him on the PUP list to begin the regular season.
