Dolphins | Dion Jordan needs work during camp    Thu Jul 24, 09:02 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan will need a good amount of snaps during training camp, but the team understands they need to get other players ready for the season as well, according to head coach Joe Philbin. 'As a young player, my feeling is he needs to get work - especially in the bigger picture that he's not going to be getting work later on. He needs work now. But we can't jeopardize the preparation of other guys. At the same time, we're going to have to get him work. He's going to get it without a doubt. And he needs it. And he needs padded work,' Philbin said.

Footballguys view: The NFL suspended Jordan four games for violating the league's performance-enhancing substance policy. Jordan had a disappointing rookie season, compiling only two sacks in over 325 defensive snaps in 2013. He's not going to be back on the football field until after the team's Week 5 bye. Jordan has a lot of work to do in order to avoid being a bust.

49ers| Justin Smith feels fully healthy    Wed Jul 23, 04:36 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Justin Smith (shoulder) said he is fully healthy entering training camp after offseason shoulder surgery.

Footballguys view: A healthy Smith is a dangerous Smith. The 49ers will be cautious with their star player as they go through training camp.

New York Jets DE/OLB Jason Babin played 68 percent of the defensive snaps for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2013, logging 772 plays on the year. He was released and re-signed this offseason, only to be released again after the Jaguars paid him $500,000 in signing bonus money.

Jets | Jason Babin signs    Wed Jul 23, 11:56 AM

New York Jets signed DE Jason Babin (Jaguars) to a two-year contract, with the second year being a team option. He's expected to serve as a situational pass rusher.

Footballguys view: Babin's not the same player he used to be, but he can help the Jets as a part-time pass-rusher if healthy. In 16 games for the Jaguars last year, Babin compiled 40 tackles, three forced fumbles and 7.5 sacks.

Buccaneers | Few players may be on bubble    Wed Jul 23, 02:31 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Bobby Rainey, G Carl Nicks and DE Da'Quan Bowers may be fighting for roster spots once training camp begins due to other competition for their jobs. TE Luke Stocker and S Kelcie McCray were also mentioned.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. All of the players listed have question marks surrounding their game--either durability or upside/natural ability. We'll see if a guy like Rainey can stick around as a reserve runner with the Bucs.

NFL | Phillip Hunt to work out soon    Mon Jul 21, 03:05 PM

Former Philadelphia Eagles DE Phillip Hunt (knee) has recovered from anterior cruciate ligament surgery and should begin workouts with teams in the near future.

Footballguys view: Teams will want to see if Hunt is healthy before signing him. If healthy, Hunt could work as a part-time pass-rusher. He might have to wait until after Week 1 to find a new team. After Week 1, veterans salaries are not guaranteed for the rest of the year.

Bills | Two signed, two cut    Mon Jul 21, 12:34 PM

The Buffalo Bills signed free-agent WR Naaman Roosevelt (Lions) and DT Landon Cohen (Bears) to undisclosed deals. The team released WR Ramses Barden and LB Nathan Williams.

Footballguys view: Barden's days in the NFL are likely over. He was an intriguing third-round pick by the Giants in 2009, but his size and wingspan never helped him at the pro level. Barden lacks the explosiveness and "my ball" mentality to stick around in the NFL.

NFL | Adam Carriker cleared    Fri Jul 18, 08:03 PM

Free-agent DT Adam Carriker (quadriceps) has recovered from his quadriceps injury and has been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: It's been a long time since Carriker has played in the NFL. He's missed 30 consecutive games, but could find some team interested in a veteran pass-rusher for the right price. Carriker might have to wait until after Week 1 of the regular season. At that point, veteran salaries are not guaranteed for the year.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware feels better    Fri Jul 18, 10:51 AM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware said he feels better entering the season than he has in two years. 'I feel better than I did the last two years going into the season,' Ware said. 'Stronger, faster. I feel flexible.'

Footballguys view: Ware still showed he had plenty left in the tank during Denver's OTAs and minicamp. He struggled through an elbow injury last year with the Cowboys and finished the year with only six sacks. With a fresh start in Denver, we could see Ware get back over double-digit sacks in 2014.

Packers | Julius Peppers may move around    Thu Jul 17, 03:23 PM

Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Dom Capers said LB Julius Peppers may move around on the defense and play a "hybrid" type role for the team. 'I can tell you that things we've asked him to do, he's done a nice job of,' defensive coordinator Dom Capers said of Peppers. 'He'll be one of those, quote, hybrid-type guys. He'll rush, he'll drop, he'll do a lot of different things.

Footballguys view: At 34-years old, Peppers is not the same player he used to be. His 7 sacks in 2013 were the least he's had since 2007. We'll see if he can stand out this year as a pass-rusher opposite Clay Matthews.

Panthers | Greg Hardy punishment could wait    Thu Jul 17, 12:15 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy could avoid immediate punishment from the NFL after being found guilty on charges of communicating threats and assaulting a female because he filed for a second trial in Superior Court in front of a jury. The NFL could choose to suspend Hardy for as many as four games based on recent disciplinary actions. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the NFL would review Hardy's legal situation at the 'appropriate time.'

Footballguys view: We expect the NFL to eventually take a strong stance here. The league usually doesn't punish first-time offenders until their legal cases have run their course. However, the Panthers could take action against Hardy before the NFL's decision.

Panthers | Could cut Greg Hardy    Thu Jul 17, 09:10 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy could be cut by the team because, according to former DE Mike Rucker, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is sensitive to the topic of domestic violence.

Footballguys view: Hardy is playing on a one-year franchise tag in 2014. The guilty verdict could at least keep the team from looking to re-sign him to a long-term deal. There's a strong chance the league suspends Hardy when the legal process has been exhausted.

Lions | Larry Webster may not contribute this season    Wed Jul 16, 04:35 PM

Detroit Lions DE Larry Webster may not contribute to the roster in 2014 if he does not show signs of development in training camp. Webster could end up on Injured Reserve so that the team does not have to risk losing him to waivers.

Steelers | Cam Thomas could start    Wed Jul 16, 01:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers DE Cam Thomas could start at defensive end until DE Stephon Tuitt is ready to take over the starting job. Thomas appears to be better suited to be a swing player at defensive end and defensive tackle.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a seasoned veteran the Steelers added in free agency from the Chargers earlier this year. Tuitt was a nice value pick by the Steelers in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. He is an athletic big man, measuring in at 6'5" 310 pounds. Tuitt is fast but needs to work on his quickness. He can take up space as a run-stuffer, and Tuitt is developing his ability to get interior push on the quarterback.

Steelers | Brian Arnfelt could be on bubble    Wed Jul 16, 01:05 PM

Buccaneers | Competition for Adrian Clayborn    Tue Jul 15, 11:58 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Adrian Clayborn will need a solid showing in camp to hold on to his starting job, according to Pat Yasinskas of DE William Gholston, DE Da'Quan Bowers and DE Steven Means are other candidates for the job.

Footballguys view: Gholston and Bowers could make things interesting, but Clayborn has more upside even though he's been a disappointment during his career. He's not a great fit for Lovie Smith's defense, but the Bucs really don't have much of a choice.

Panthers | Greg Hardy found guilty    Tue Jul 15, 11:02 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy was found guilty Tuesday, July 15, of assaulting of assaulting a female and communicating threats. Mecklenburg County Judge Rebecca Thorn-Tin sentenced Hardy to 18 months' probation. A 60-day jail sentence was suspended. Hardy's attorney Chris Fialko said he'll appeal and Hardy has asked for a jury trial in superior court.

Footballguys view: The appeal will likely delay any suspension coming from the NFL. Cases like this can be pushed back quite some time, so the league is going to have to wait before they suspend Hardy.

Panthers | Greg Hardy pleads not guilty     Tue Jul 15, 02:28 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy appeared in court Tuesday, July 15, on charges of communicating threats and assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

Footballguys view: Hardy's ex-girlfriend testified in court Tuesday, July 15, that Hardy strangled her and threatened to kill her. Some believe the NFL has a problem with domestic violence and the league will take appropriate action (suspension, fines) when the legal process has exhausted for Hardy.

Panthers | Long-term deal unlikely for Greg Hardy    Mon Jul 14, 06:14 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy is unlikely to reach a long-term deal with the team before the deadline Tuesday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is what happens when you get in trouble with the law with a contract on the line. Hardy had character concerns when he came out of college, and that's why he fell to the sixth round. He's set to go to trial Tuesday for two misdemeanor assault charges after he allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend earlier this offseason.

Giants | Mathias Kiwanuka could be pushed for starting job    Mon Jul 14, 02:13 PM

New York Giants DE Mathias Kiwanuka is considered the leading candidate for one of the starting defensive end jobs but could be pushed by DEs Robert Ayers and Damontre Moore for the job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Ayers never lived up to his first-round draft status in Denver, but he could be energized by a fresh start with the Giants. Moore has some upside but has yet to play up to his potential as a pro. The Giants could use some form of a rotation at the position if Kiwanuka doesn't look markedly better.

Patriots | Michael Buchanan has chance to make roster    Sun Jul 13, 08:08 PM

New England Patriots DE Michael Buchanan has a good chance to make the final roster because of his special teams play. Buchanan hopes to earn a role on defense during training camp.

Footballguys view: Buchanan is known as a hustle-player. He has the raw physical ability to get off the snap cleanly and push his man back. Buchanan gets by on hustle and determination. That sounds like a player who fits the Patriots mold.

Redskins | Three could be PUP candidates    Sat Jul 12, 12:39 PM

Washington Redskins DE Stephen Bowen (knee), DT Jason Hatcher (knee) and CB Richard Crawford (knee) are candidates to start training camp on Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The PUP list for training camp is different than the PUP list for the regular season. In camp, teams can put a player on the PUP list and bring him back at any time. During the regular season, the PUP list prevents a player from coming back for six weeks. After that there is a three week grace period to determine if a player is ready, or if he needs to be put on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Texans | Opinion: Andre Johnson won't be traded    Fri Jul 11, 09:52 AM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson 'is not going to be traded,' in the opinion to John McClain. Houston wants to avoid giving Johnson the $1 million workout bonus that he passed up by not participating in offseason activities or guarantee his 2015 salary. They don't want to create a precedent that can be manipulated by DE J.J. Watt's agent in the future. McClain said that 'Any 33-year-old ... anybody doesn't walk away from' the $10 million that Houston owes Johnson.

Footballguys view: McClain is the best beat writer for the Texans, so we trust his word. In the immortal words of Nick Saban "this ain't fantasy football." It sounds great to put Johnson with the Browns or the Seahawks (or any other team), but the reality is we're unlikely to see the veteran receiver moved. He's frustrated with the team's lack of direction offensively and their rag-tag group of quarterbacks. We can't blame him for the way he feels, but at the end of the day he'll get over it.

Jaguars | Andre Branch focused on improving    Thu Jul 10, 05:53 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars DE Andre Branch admitted recently that, for him, repetition is the key to getting better. He has taken that philosophy to heart, saying he 'always wants to be better than yesterday.'

Footballguys view: Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley singled out Branch as a standout defensive player in OTAs earlier this year. Branch started the 2013 season out slowly, but he finished strong with five sacks over the final six weeks. The team is hoping he carries that momentum over to this year.
