Cowboys | Randy Gregory signs rookie deal    Wed May 20, 01:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Randy Gregory signed his four-year rookie deal Wednesday, May 20. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed. Gregory was the team's second-round draft pick.

Footballguys view: Gregory is a talented pass-rusher, but he fell in the 2015 NFL draft after a positive drug test (marijuana) at the scouting combine. He's got the length and the burst to get after the quarterback from the edge, but his technique and diagnostic skills could use some work.

Cowboys | Demarcus Lawrence to rush more    Wed May 13, 11:42 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence will be counted upon in the pass rush more this season, and the team is banking on him making great strides in his second year.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys defense is going to be one to watch for fantasy owners. They've added pass-rushing talent this offseason through the draft and free agency. Plus, it sounds like they want to turn Lawrence loose this year. He is up to 260 pounds, a weight he wants to stay for the season, and he likes the way he gets off on his left side with his right hand down.

Lions | Corey Wootton visits Allen Park    Mon May 11, 10:28 PM

The Detroit Lions worked out free-agent DT Corey Wootton (Vikings) Monday, May 11, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wootton is coming off a down season, but he's gotten interest from a few teams this offseason. He should sign with a team before training camp.

Eagles | Philly made big push for Marcus Mariota    Fri May 1, 12:51 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles offered the Tennessee Titans two first-round picks, one third-round pick, DT Fletcher Cox, CB Brandon Boykin, LB Mychal Kendricks and QB Sam Bradford in exchange for the 2nd overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Chip Kelly tried as hard as he could, but it's difficult to move up from the 20th spot to 2nd overall. We'll see how Mariota works out with the Titans as he seems to be a bit of an odd fit. In Philadelphia, we would have been much more excited about Mariota's pro prospects.

Eagles | Making big offer for No. 1 or No. 2    Thu Apr 30, 08:06 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are willing to trade two first-round picks, a third-round pick, DT Fletcher Cox, CB Brandon Boykin, LB Mychal Kendricks and possibly other things in order to acquire the first or second overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: It wasn't enough. It seems insane that the Titans didn't pull the trigger on that trade, but they took Marcus Mariota. He's a great prospect so you can't blame him but that's a lot of talent left on the table.

Bills | Jerry Hughes impressing his coach    Thu Apr 30, 06:51 PM

Buffalo Bills DE Jerry Hughes was pulled from practice Wednesday, April 29, by head coach Rex Ryan, in order for the offense to get some work in. Ryan said Hughes had five or six sacks before being pulled. 'This just in: I am really happy we signed Jerry Hughes back,' Ryan said Wednesday. 'It's rare that you have to pull a guy from practice because he's ruining your practice. I had to pull him today.'

Footballguys view: Hughes is good but remember Bills fans - this is how Rex Ryan operates. He pumps his players way up. The thing you should be concerned with is, how bad is the offensive line if he was getting tons of sacks? Of course, this is all non-contact anyway so again, take it with a grain of salt.

Falcons | Adam Carriker not offered contract    Wed Apr 29, 07:03 PM

Free-agent DE Adam Carriker (Redskins) was not immediately offered a contract by the Atlanta Falcons following veteran's minicamp Wednesday, April 29. The Falcons want to wait until after the draft.

Broncos | Quanterus Smith failed physical    Tue Apr 28, 01:16 PM

Updating a previous item, Denver Broncos DE Quanterus Smith (knee) was waived Tuesday, April 28, after a failed physical on his left knee. Smith played in 15 games last year and had 11 tackles and zero sacks.

Footballguys view: Smith's knee problems date back to 2012 when he was leading the NCAA in sacks before his injury. Those problems lingered through his entire career with the Broncos, and it will prevent other teams from having a ton of interest in the pass-rusher.

Dolphins | Dion Jordan suspended for the year    Tue Apr 28, 01:05 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan will be suspended for the entire 2015 season for another substance abuse policy violation, according to league sources. Jordan will not appeal the suspension.

Footballguys view: Word is the Eagles and the Dolphins were working on a trade that would have reunited Jordan with Chip Kelly. Now, it looks like he's going to miss the entire season. The number three pick in the 2013 NFL draft is looking like a colossal bust.

Broncos | Quanterus Smith waived    Tue Apr 28, 10:27 AM

Denver Broncos DE Quanterus Smith was waived Tuesday, April 28, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith just couldn't stay healthy during his brief time with the Broncos. A fifth-round pick in 2013, Smith was an interesting developmental prospect. He led the NCAA in sacks during his 2012 season at Western Kentucky, but a knee injury cut his season short. That knee injury kept him out of action in 2013 as a rookie with the Broncos, and it slowed him down in 2014 as well.

Eagles | Philly pursuing Marcus Mariota?    Fri Apr 24, 05:54 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be selected by the Philadelphia Eagles if the team could make trades with the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans, according to one draft rumor.

Footballguys view: Of course they're looking to add Mariota. The rumor states the Eagles would trade QB Sam Bradford to the Browns for the 19th overall pick, then the Eagles would trade DT Fletcher Cox, LB Mychal Kendricks, the 19th overall pick and the 20th overall pick to the Titans for the second overall pick where they would select Mariota.

Dolphins | No vote of confidence for Dion Jordan    Fri Apr 24, 05:27 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan did not receive a vote of confidence from any of the front office people during their pre-draft press conference Friday, April 24. Jordan did not participate in voluntary workouts earlier in the week.

Footballguys view: Jordan has yet to fulfill the promise which had the Miami Dolphins trade up for him. In his defense, he hasn't always been used all that well, but injuries are also an issue. We'll see if he stays with the Dolphins in even a minor role.

Chiefs | Mike DeVito will participate in workouts    Mon Apr 20, 02:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') will be able to participate in offseason workouts, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Saints | Corey Wootton leaves without deal    Wed Apr 15, 10:52 PM

Free-agent DT Corey Wootton (Vikings) met with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, April 15, but he left without receiving a contract offer, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints want to improve their defensive line, and they could add Wooton at a later date. A part-time player with the Vikings last year, Wooton's best season came in 2012 when he had 27 tackles and seven sacks.

Buccaneers | George Johnson acquired    Wed Apr 15, 08:29 AM

Detroit Lions DE George Johnson was acquired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Wednesday, April 15. Tampa signed Johnson to an offer sheet that was disputed by Detroit, but the sides swapped undisclosed draft picks to settle it.

Footballguys view: Johnson was a journeyman pass-rusher his first four years in the league. Last season he had a career-high six sacks with the Lions...the first six sacks of his career. Now, he's going to be with the Buccaneers. Expect the NFLPA to look into this snafu and trade.

Eagles | Cedric Thornton re-signs    Mon Apr 13, 04:34 PM

Philadelphia Eagles restricted free-agent DE Cedric Thornton re-signed to a one-year contract Monday, April 13. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Thornton has been a starter for the Eagles over the last two years. He'll continue to be one of their best run-stuffers in the trenches this season.

Colts | Aaron Morgan to Reserve/Retired list    Mon Apr 13, 12:09 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Aaron Morgan was placed on the Reserve/Retired list Monday, April 13.

Saints | Anthony Spencer signs    Fri Apr 10, 01:09 PM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints Friday, April 10. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Lions | Ziggy Ansah could get new dea    Wed Apr 8, 10:55 PM

Detroit Lions DE Ziggy Ansah is nearing the end of his rookie contract, and team president Tom Lewand mentioned Ansah as a possible candidate for an extension.

Footballguys view: Ansah has compiled 16 sacks over the last two years. If he continues to develop as a pass-rusher on the outside, the team is going to have to reward him with a big pay day in the near future. They could try to extend him now in order to potentially save some money later.

Raiders | Sign exclusive rights free agents    Wed Apr 8, 05:19 PM

Oakland Raiders DE Denico Autry, TE Brian Leonhardt, OT Matt McCants, RB Jamize Olawale and DB Neiko Thorpe were all signed as exclusive rights free agents Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Leonhardt is a player we'd like to highlight here for fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues. He was signed by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2013 after playing college football at Bemidji State. Olawale was a converted wide receiver and fullback who the Raiders signed off the Cowboys practice squad in 2012. The former North Texas standout is only a fullback and special teams player with little (almost non-existent) fantasy value.

Buccaneers | George Johnson signed to offer sheet    Tue Apr 7, 10:20 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed restricted free-agent DE George Johnson (Lions) to a three-year offer sheet Tuesday, April 7. Financial terms are undisclosed.

Jaguars | Corey Wootton works out    Fri Apr 3, 04:34 PM

Free-agent DE Corey Wootton (Vikings) worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, April 2.

Footballguys view: Wootton has worked out for the Titans as well. He appeared in 15 games last year, but played less than 300 snaps. Wootton struggles to stop the run, and he did not generate any pressure as a pass-rusher in 2014.

Broncos | Antonio Smith signed    Thu Apr 2, 02:44 PM

Free-agent DE Antonio Smith (Raiders) signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos Thursday, April 2, worth $2 million.

Footballguys view: Smith didn't do much with the Raiders, and will likely be limited to a rotational and situational pass-rushing role. He was miscast as a defensive tackle last year, but with the Broncos he'll likely play defensive end.

Seahawks | Will Tukuafu re-signs    Wed Apr 1, 06:30 PM

The Seattle Seahawks re-signed FB Will Tukuafu to an undisclosed deal Wednesday, April 1.

Cowboys | Sign Efe Obada    Wed Apr 1, 05:41 PM

Street free-agent DE Efe Obada signed with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: At 6'6" 255 pounds, Obada is an intriguing longshot for the Cowboys to pick up. The defensive end appeared in just five games in 2014 for the London Warriors of the British American Football Association National Leagues (BAFANL).

Steelers | Clifton Geathers re-signs    Wed Apr 1, 02:57 PM

Free-agent DE Clifton Geathers (Steelers) was re-signed to a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, April 1. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Steelers fans didn't get to see anything from Geathers last year. He was signed in December, but he didn't play a snap for the team. This season, Geathers will compete for a backup job behind Cam Heyward and Stephon Tuitt.

Raiders | Antonio Smith to be released    Tue Mar 31, 04:07 PM

Oakland Raiders DE Antonio Smith will be released, according to a source informed on the move.

Footballguys view: The Raiders will save $3.2 million with the move. A 16-game starter last year, Smith failed to make much of an impact. Now on the open market, the Houston Texans may show interest in Smith since he played from 2009-13 with Texans DC Romeo Crennel. A tackle for the Raiders, Smith would play end for the Texans.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson likely to stay    Tue Mar 31, 02:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') and DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') are both pushing each other in their rehabs from torn Achilles' tendons. Both players also have a year left on their contracts. DeVito agreed to a pay cut that dropped his salary to $2.9 million. Johnson has a salary cap number of $5.2 million, and the Chiefs are only around $2.85 million under the 2015 cap. Kansas City could create more room by releasing Johnson, but the Chiefs are expected to hang onto him.

Footballguys view: Johnson can clean up as a run-stuffer if healthy. The Chiefs would be wise to keep him around even though his cap number is a bit higher than they perhaps would like it to be.

Patriots | Chandler Jones had surgery    Mon Mar 30, 08:49 AM

New England Patriots DE Chandler Jones (undisclosed) has been at Gillette Stadium for much of the offseason rehabbing from an undisclosed surgery. He has been walking with the aid of crutches.

Footballguys view: Jones missed six games last year due to a hip injury that did not require surgery. Nobody knows what he went under the knife for, but expect the Patriots to bring him back slowly as he recovers.

Dolphins | Derrick Shelby signs tender    Thu Mar 26, 11:46 AM

Miami Dolphins restricted free-agent DE Derrick Shelby signed his tender offer Wednesday, March 26. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Shelby is strictly a rotational guy, but a vital one. He's young, does a good job getting to the quarterback and has a lot of upside.

Saints | Anthony Spencer visited team    Thu Mar 26, 07:46 AM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) visited the New Orleans Saints this week, but Saints head coach Sean Payton told reporters there have been no contract talks with Spencer.

Footballguys view: Spencer has underachieved for a long time, but even so it's surprising how little interest there seems to be. Perhaps his asking price is high. More than likely he finds a home where he will rotate in on the edge, rather than a full time position.

Raiders | C.J. Wilson back with Oakland    Wed Mar 25, 11:48 PM

Bears | Ray McDonald signing    Tue Mar 24, 01:53 PM

Free-agent DE Ray McDonald (49ers) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24.

Footballguys view: McDonald comes to Chicago with his fair share of baggage. On the field, he should start at defensive end for the Bears and he can slide inside to tackle when the team goes with a four-man front. Off the field, McDonald has to prove that he can make better decisions and avoid the trouble that circled him last year.

Jets | Stephen Bowen signing    Tue Mar 24, 01:23 PM

Free-agent DE Stephen Bowen (Redskins) is signing an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Tuesday, March 24.

NFL | Jamaal Anderson healthy    Mon Mar 23, 05:21 PM

Free-agent DE Jamaal Anderson (knee) said he's fully recovered from a knee injury after taking part in the veteran combine this past weekend. 'I feel outstanding, not just physically but mentally, and I think it definitely humbled me to sit back and realize that I'm not entitled as a first-rounder to be on a roster. I think I'm going to cherish more of the journey now,' Anderson said.

Footballguys view: Anderson was the 8th overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft to the Atlanta Falcons. He's struggled to stay healthy and play effectively, so now Anderson is looking for another chance. At 6'6" 280 pounds, Anderson could get some attention from his performance at the veteran combine.

Free-agent DE Adam Carriker (quadriceps) said he has been physically cleared by Dr. James Andrews, and Carriker said he's feeling great physically. Carriker is expected to draw interest from the 50 scouts that were in attendance at last weekend's veteran combine.

Footballguys view: Carriker was out of the league last season after Washington released him a year ago. He's 30-years old and two years removed from a devastating knee injury. We'll see if Carriker can draw interest now after his performance at the veteran combine.

Cowboys | Anthony Spencer not expected back    Sun Mar 22, 11:12 AM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) is not expected to re-sign with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.

Footballguys view: The signing of Greg Hardy means the Cowboys are likely to let Spencer go. He could work well for a team as a part-time pass-rusher. Spencer has failed to impress since undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee in 2013.

Seahawks | C.J. Wilson to visit Seattle    Sat Mar 21, 07:19 PM

Free-agent DE C.J. Wilson (Raiders) will visit the Seattle Seahawks this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wilson is a run-stuffer on the edge. He also has the ability to build pressure from the outside, but he's not known as a pass-rusher.

Vikings | Teddy Bridgewater working with teammates    Fri Mar 20, 01:23 PM

Minnesota Vikings QB Teddy Bridgewater is working out in California with Vikings TE Kyle Rudolph, RB Jerick McKinnon, WR Charles Johnson and TE Brandon Bostick. McKinnon and Rudolph are rooming together at Rudolph's Newport Beach, Calif., home and are taking a no-nonsense approach to their training. Rudolph organized the group event.

Footballguys view: It's no mystery, we love Bridgewater. He's smart, accurate and known as a football junkie. Why he wasn't a top-5 pick last year is completely baffling. Moving on from that, his upside is that of a top-12 fantasy QB. We'll see if he can make a big jump in year two.

Giants | George Selvie agrees with Giants    Fri Mar 20, 10:36 AM

Free-agent DE George Selvie (Cowboys) agreed to a one-year, $1.4 million deal with the New York Giants Friday, March 20. The deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Selvie will be reunited with former USF teammate Jason Pierre-Paul. The veteran defensive end started 29 of 32 games for the Dallas Cowboys over the last two years. His career really took off in Dallas, and he compiled 10 sacks during his time in Dallas. The Giants are hopeful he can continue to work well as a part-time pass-rusher.

Free-agent DT Ahtyba Rubin (Browns) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 19, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Rubin is a big run-stuffer who can plug up the middle. The Browns weren't hot and heavy to bring him back after finishing 32nd against the run in 2014. We'll see if a change of scenery helps Rubin play better.

Free-agent DE Osi Umenyiora (Falcons) didn't have an official visit with the New York Jets Wednesday, March 18, according to general manager Mike Maccagnan. Umenyiora was only visiting to say hi to new head coach Todd Bowles.
