Free-agent DT Darnell Dockett (Cardinals) has received interest from the St. Louis Rams. However, he's expected to choose between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 4.

Footballguys view: We'd love to see Dockett on the Rams. He's not the player he used to be, but Dockett would be a fine part-time pass-rusher for any team interested in him.

Free-agent DT Darnell Dockett (Cardinals) has received interest from the Seattle Seahawks. However, he's expected to choose between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 4.

Footballguys view: That sounds like a move the Seahawks could make. Dockett may have been slowed a bit by injury at this point in his career, but he could be a great part-time pass-rusher for the Seattle defense.

Detroit Lions LB Darryl Tapp re-signed a one-year, $870,000 deal with an $80,000 signing bonus Monday, March 2.

Footballguys view: It's not a lot of money for veteran depth. At this point in his career, that's what Tapp will give the Lions...if he makes the final roster.

Giants | Place franchise tag on Jason Pierre-Paul     Mon Mar 2, 01:58 PM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul received the franchise tag Monday, March 2, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This move guarantees Pierre-Paul a one-year salary of $14.8 million in 2015. This is a non-exclusive tag which means the Giants can match any offer Pierre-Paul gets from other teams. If another team signs him, the Giants would be handed two first-round picks from his new team.

Raiders | LaMarr Woodley will be released    Sun Mar 1, 07:07 PM

The Oakland Raiders plan to release DE LaMarr Woodley, a league source said Sunday, March 1. He made just five tackles in six games before his season ended due to a torn biceps.

Footballguys view: The Raiders save $5.187 million against the salary cap without adding any dead money with the transaction. Last year, the Raiders added a bunch of older free agents like Woodley and it just didn't work out. Woodley is not the same player he used to be, and there may not be much interest in him on the open market.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett cut    Fri Feb 27, 04:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett was released Friday, Feb. 27. The Cardinals would like to re-sign Dockett if he is not able to find a better offer from another team.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals would like to bring back Dockett...but the price has to be right. There are reports and rumors swirling that the two could not agree on his market value, and that's why he was released.

Redskins | Stephen Bowen let go    Fri Feb 27, 03:14 PM

Washington Redskins DE Stephen Bowen was released Friday, Feb. 27.

Footballguys view: The move saves Washington about $5.5 million in cap space. Knee injuries over the last two years have prevented Bowen from playing up to his potential. He's free to sign with any team at any time now that he's on the open market.

Bengals | Robert Geathers released    Fri Feb 27, 01:27 PM

Cincinnati Bengals DE Robert Geathers was released Friday, Feb. 27.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick by the Bengals in 2004, Geathers was a starter for most of his career up until last season. He was set to make $2.85 million in 2015, and now Geathers will be looking for a new home.

NFL | Chris Canty plans to play in 2015    Fri Feb 27, 12:10 PM

Free-agent DE Chris Canty (Ravens) said he plans to play in 2015, even though he had been contemplating retirement since the end of last season. 'I am going to continue to prepare to play again and will explore other possibilities to play the game I love,' Canty said. '[The Ravens] helped me re-discover and continue my passion for football, a game I respect and love.'

Footballguys view: We could see Canty returning to Baltimore in 2015. We'll see how the market responds to a player who is contemplating retirement.

Lions | Phillip Hunt to sign    Thu Feb 26, 04:02 PM

Free-agent DE Phillip Hunt (Eagles) will sign with the Detroit Lions.

Footballguys view: He's a longshot, but one the Lions felt was worth taking. Hunt was with the Eagles in Philadelphia when current Lions defensive line coach Jim Washburn was there. Hunt has not played in two seasons. He injured his ACL in 2013 and missed the entire year. Last season, the Colts took a shot on him but he was cut from the team before Week 1.

Panthers | Greg Hardy will look for reinstatement    Thu Feb 26, 02:18 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DE Greg Hardy will seek immediate reinstatement after a judge overturned Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson's suspension, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With a judge ruling the league overstepped its bounds in Peterson's case, expect the same result for Hardy. He should have some interest on the free agency market, as we're pretty sure the Panthers are done with him.

Lions | George Johnson status resolved    Thu Feb 26, 07:28 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent DE George Johnson (Lions) is considered a restricted free agent by both the NFL and the NFL Players Association.

Footballguys view: Johnson had played parts of the last five years in the NFL, so his status as a free agent was up in the air. At age 27, Johnson could interest some teams--even as a restricted free agent--depending on his tender level.

Lions | George Johnson's free agent status questioned    Tue Feb 24, 02:17 AM

Free-agent DE George Johnson (Lions) may or may not be an unrestricted free agent. A player must accumulate four accrued seasons to earn unrestricted free agency, and players must spend six weeks on a 53-man roster to earn an accrued year. Johnson did this in 2011, 2012 and 2014, but in 2013 he was paid for six weeks but was on the Minnesota Vikings' roster for only five.

Buccaneers | Da'Quan Bowers unlikely to stay    Mon Feb 23, 04:28 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent DE Da'Quan Bowers has been a bust since being drafted in 2011, and he was in danger of being cut last summer. The current regime in Tampa has nothing invested in his future.

Footballguys view: Bowers just can't stay healthy. It's a problem that has plagued him ever since he came into the league.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul could see franchise tag    Mon Feb 23, 08:51 AM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul will be franchise tagged if the two sides can't agree to an extension by March 2, according to a team source.

Footballguys view: The Giants have to decide whether or not they want to invest long term in Pierre-Paul. He's a talented pass-rusher, but problems with staying healthy have plagued him during his career.

Bengals | May show interest in Greg Hardy    Sun Feb 22, 09:42 AM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DE Greg Hardy could receive interest from the Cincinnati Bengals during free agency.

Footballguys view: That Cincinnati just being Cincinnati. For years, they have taken chances on players through the draft and free agency that have serious character concerns. Hardy is coming off a season that he spent on the Commissioner's Exempt List after domestic violence allegations came up before the start of the 2014 season. All charges were dropped in that case as the alleged victim did not want to testify against Hardy. Now, he's looking to restart his career as one of the top pass-rushers in the game but a possible (further) suspension could keep his price tag lower.

Falcons | Keeping an eye on Jason Pierre-Paul    Sun Feb 22, 07:32 AM

Free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul (Giants) may be pursued by the Atlanta Falcons if he hits free agency.

Footballguys view: The Falcons need to do anything they possibly can to improve their pass rush in 2015. Adding Pierre-Paul would be part of the answer. Pierre-Paul is talented, but his career has been set back by injuries. He's entering free agency on a high note after compiling 12.5 sacks in 2014.

Giants | Have decisions with Jason Pierre-Paul    Sat Feb 21, 11:05 AM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul has had contract talks with the Giants, according to general manager Jerry Reese.

Footballguys view: The Giants would like to keep Pierre-Paul around, but the price tag has to be right. Pierre-Paul is talented, but his career has been set back by injuries. He had 12.5 sacks last year, and he could be as (if not more) productive in 2015 with the Giants.

Browns | Ahtyba Rubin healthy    Sat Feb 21, 10:30 AM

Giants | No talks with Jason Pierre-Paul yet    Fri Feb 20, 12:55 PM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul has not had any contract talks with the team to this point.

Footballguys view: This should be interesting as the Giants need some pass rush help, but JPP wasn't all that exceptional a pass-rusher anymore. How much are they willing to pay him and how much is left in the tank? We suspect there won't be a lot of money earmarked for Pierre-Paul, but he might also find the market for his services aren't great either so a hometown discount could be forthcoming.

  Giants | G-Men haven't met with Jason Pierre-Paul    Fri Feb 20, 10:22 AM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul's agents haven't met with the Giants at the NFL Scouting Combine. ESPNNewYork.com's Dan Graziano feels that's a telling sign.

Footballguys view: The Giants have more than a few things to work out in terms of free agents. The big questions here are how much will Pierre-Paul ask for and how much can the Giants afford to lose one of the only (normally) good pass rushers they have and that pass rush was not so good last season as it is. Will removing JPP - even a declined JPP - a wise thing for a defense which needs to bounce back quickly.

Bills | Jerry Hughes unlikely to receive tag    Tue Feb 17, 01:02 PM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent DE Jerry Hughes wants to re-sign with the team, and they want him back, but Buffalo is unlikely to use $14 million-plus on another pass rusher in the offseason.

Footballguys view: Hughes is arguably the best edge-rusher available on the open market. It's unlikely the Bills will have the kind of money needed to keep him around. They're already invested heavily in Mario Williams, and Marcel Dareus had his fifth-year option picked up. Next year, Dareus will be commanding a high price tag.

Jaguars | To meet with Tyson Alualu at combine    Tue Feb 17, 12:32 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent DT Tyson Alualu's agent is expected to meet with the team at the NFL scouting combine this week.

Footballguys view: Alualu was a surprise first-round pick in the 2010 NFL draft, and he has failed to produce up to his draft status. He suffered a knee injury early in his career, but the Jaguars might want to keep him around as a backup.

Giants | Giants still haven't talked with JPP    Mon Feb 16, 11:29 PM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul have still not begun discussing financial numbers as of Monday, Feb. 16, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Giants would like to keep Pierre-Paul around, but the price tag has to be right. Pierre-Paul is talented, but his career has been set back by injuries. He had 12.5 sacks last year, and he could be as (if not more) productive in 2015 with the Giants.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora set to be free agent    Mon Feb 16, 07:42 PM

Atlanta Falcons DE Osi Umenyiora is set to become an unrestricted free agent this March.

Footballguys view: Umenyiora's 2.5 sacks were the lowest of his career since his rookie season (2003) when he finished with a single sack. He's no longer the player he used to be, but there might be a few teams interested in adding Umenyiora as a part-time pass-rusher. We could even see him return to the New York Giants.

Giants | Unlikely to let Jason Pierre-Paul walk    Sat Feb 14, 07:07 PM

New York Giants impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul will have every attempt made to re-sign him this offseason by the Giants.

Footballguys view: With 42 sacks in his career, Pierre-Paul is one of the best pass-rushers on the open market. The Giants would like to keep him around, but doing so would take a great financial commitment. What complicates things even further is the fact that Pierre-Paul had two of his five seasons in the NFL riddled with injuries.

Panthers | Greg Hardy staying on exemption list    Fri Feb 13, 05:34 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DE Greg Hardy will remain on the commissioner's exempt list while the NFL investigates whether he violated the league's personal conduct policy.

Footballguys view: This is not over yet, even though charges were dropped against Hardy. The NFL has filed a motion seeking all of the evidence from Hardy's first trial where he was found guilty of assaulting and threatening to kill his ex-girlfriend. Hardy could be suspended at least six games if he is found to be in violation of the policy.

NFL | Greg Hardy could still face discipline    Mon Feb 9, 10:50 AM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) could still be subject to a suspension in 2015 after his domestic violence case was dismissed Monday, Feb. 9.

Footballguys view: Under the league's Personal Conduct Policy, a player can be suspended for making the league look bad. Hardy is not out of the woods yet. He enters free agency clear of any criminal charges, and some team out there should be willing to pay him a hefty salary despite the fact that he missed most of 2014 on the Commissioner's exempt list.

NFL | Greg Hardy's case dismissed    Mon Feb 9, 10:33 AM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) had his domestic violence case dismissed Monday, Feb. 9. Prosecutors believe they did not have enough evidence to go forward with the case without Hardy's accuser, who has declined to cooperate.

Footballguys view: Hardy catches a huge break here right before the start of free agency. Now that he's clear of criminal charges, Hardy becomes one of the hottest pass-rushers available on the open market.

Giants | No talks with Jason Pierre-Paul yet    Sat Feb 7, 10:32 AM

Impending free-agent DE Jason Pierre-Paul has not had any substantial contract extension talks with the New York Giants yet.

Footballguys view: The Giants would like to keep Pierre-Paul around, but they need to be careful about his price. Sure, he's a talented pass-rusher but man alive is he too inconsistent to pay a significant price for. He finished the season strong with nine of his 12.5 sacks in 2015 coming in the final five games of the year.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett entering final year    Fri Feb 6, 02:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals DE Darnell Dockett (knee) is scheduled to count $9.8 million against Arizona's 2015 salary cap. The team would take a hit of $3.0 million in dead money by releasing him regardless of being a June 1 designation.

Footballguys view: We don't see the Cardinals getting rid of Dockett with that cap hit. As previously reported, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he expects Dockett to return for the final year of his deal.

The New England Patriots signed OG Chris Barker, DE Jake Bequette, QB Garrett Gilbert, DB Justin Green, OT Caylin Hauptmann, WR Jonathan Krause, LBs Eric Martin and Deontae Skinner and DB Daxton Swanson to Reserve/Futures deals Thursday, Feb. 5.

Footballguys view: Gilbert is the former Texans Longhorns quarterback who transferred to SMU. He was a sixth-round pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL draft, but he failed to make an impact and was released during final cuts. Gilbert was added to the Rams practice squad, but was released less than two months later. He has good accuracy, but his pop-gun arm isn't going to test defenses.

Pittsburgh Steelers DE Brett Keisel (triceps) told the media Wednesday, Feb. 4, he'd rehab his injury and see how things turn out in regards to playing in 2015.

Footballguys view: But for an injury to Le'Veon Bell, the Steelers could have been on their way to the AFC Championship and perhaps the Super Bowl. Keisel is on his last legs but will probably be around for another season. Keisel has a $1.75 million cap hit in 2015.

Free-agent OLB/DE Pernell McPhee (Ravens) has likely priced himself out of the Baltimore Ravens' price range, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley.

Footballguys view: In 2014, McPhee registered a career-high 27 tackles, 7.5 sacks and 35 quarterback hurries. According to Pro Football Focus, he was the league's second-best outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. He's looking at a major payday on the open market.
