Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey, Aaron Colvin placed on PUP list    Sat Jul 22, 06:15 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars CBs Jalen Ramsey (core) and Aaron Colvin (undisclosed) were placed on the preseason Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 22.

Footballguys view: Ramsey had core muscle surgery late in the offseason, so this isn't a surprise. The Jaguars defense is one of the strongest in the league and they should have the cornerstone of their secondary back soon. Colvin missed the offseason with a lower leg injury, but should also be ready to go soon.

Bears | Kyle Fuller could be on trading block    Fri Jul 21, 06:39 PM

The Chicago Bears may look to trade CB Kyle Fuller during the preseason, in the opinion of's Jeff Dickerson.

Footballguys view: That would be a sign that the Bears really are doing a full reboot. Fuller has generally played well, but they may be looking to rebuild the entire defense which, given its success rate is very low, might not be a bad idea.

Cincinnati Bengals CB Adam Jones was suspended one game by the NFL on Friday, July 21, for violating the personal conduct policy. He has the right to appeal the decision.

Footballguys view: Same old, same old. Jones can't have many choices left to go at this point. Not only is he in trouble on a consistent basis, but he isn't as good as he once was.

Titans | Adoree' Jackson unlikely to play offense early    Sat Jul 15, 02:12 PM

Tennessee Titans CB Adoree' Jackson likely will not be used on offense right away because the team wants him to be comfortable with his role on defense and special teams before using him on offense.

Footballguys view: Jackson is arguably the best athlete to be selected in the 2017 NFL draft. He's explosive with the ball in his hands -- on offense or on defense. As soon as he gets used to the pro game on the defense, we could see the Titans having a package of plays for Jackson on offense.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson a free agent next year?    Thu Jul 13, 02:47 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson is expected to become an unrestricted free agent next year, according to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio. Johnson has been given the franchise tag two years in a row. Being tagged for a third year in a row would cost the Rams $24.1 million.

Footballguys view: While we won't be shocked if Johnson and the Rams manage to work something out, this is a team doing some hard rebuilding, and they may not want to sink an inordinate amount of money on one guy in the secondary. If/when Johnson does hit the free-agent market, he has a good chance to become the highest-paid cornerback in the league.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey to be on PUP list for camp?    Tue Jul 11, 07:17 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey (core) is not expected to miss any regular season games, but he could be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Not a big deal here. The PUP list in camp just means a player can be activated anytime they're ready during August. Ramsey is recovering from surgery to repair a core muscle injury and one of the most exciting young corners in the league when healthy.

Lions | Teez Tabor quiets speed worries    Tue Jul 11, 09:57 AM

Detroit Lions CB Teez Tabor quieted any worries about his speed in the open portion of organized team activities and minicamp. Tabor ran with Detroit's receivers and even found a way to make a few plays.

Footballguys view: Tabor ran a 4.62 40-yard dash at the Scouting Combine earlier this year. On film in college at Florida, Tabor showed a reluctance when covering speed demons on the outside. Tabor is quick and athletic at 6'0" 199 pounds. However, when he's facing a fast receiver he will often give his opponent plenty of cushion in off coverage. That plus missing tackles too often are the biggest parts of his game he needs to work on at the pro level.

Bills | Ronald Darby may cover No. 1 receivers    Mon Jul 10, 06:56 PM

Seahawks | DeShawn Shead likely to wind up on PUP    Sun Jul 9, 08:55 AM

Seattle Seahawks CB DeShawn Shead (knee) is likely to begin the 2017 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, meaning he would be forced to miss the first six games of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Jeremy Lane has earned some praise from head coach Pete Carroll after a tough 2016, and he is the favorite to be the outside corner opposite Richard Sherman to open the season while Shead is out. Lane is also the nickel corner and he will shift inside in nickel packages, leaving an outside spot up for grabs between impressive third-round pick Shaq Griffin and special teams ace Neiko Thorpe.

Chiefs | Marqueston Huff waived    Thu Jul 6, 05:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs S Marqueston Huff (undisclosed) was waived with a non-football injury designation Thursday, July 6. P Will Monday was also waived.

Seahawks | Jeremy Lane could start     Thu Jul 6, 02:05 PM

Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane is the favorite to start opposite CB Richard Sherman in place of injured CB DeShawn Shead (knee), according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times. Head coach Pete Carroll and defensive coordinator Kris Richards have given votes of confidence to Lane. CBs Shaquill Griffin and Neiko Thorpe are also in the mix at the position, with Griffin being Lane's main competition.

Footballguys view: We suspect Carroll will kick the tires on a ton of cornerbacks not just to find a starter across from Sherman but, if we read the tea leaves correctly, to perhaps find a potential replacement for Sherman in 2018. While things have been mellow between Sherman and the team the last few months, the tension is still there. Could they consider moving on? If Lane or someone else steps up, perhaps.

Falcons | Atlanta CBs can move around    Wed Jul 5, 02:47 PM

Atlanta Falcons CBs Desmond Trufant, Robert Alford, Brian Poole and Jalen Collins all have the ability to play either outside cornerback or slot cornerback in the nickel formation, according to defensive coordinator Marquand Manuel.

Footballguys view: The Falcons are looking to add some more flexibility to their formations, and being able to shift players into different positions will help that. It also means players will be on the field more and that means they have more potential to produce fantasy points. We think Trufant and Alford will probably be the most consistent earners, but will know more about how much value everyone has as we see them more in camp.

Falcons | Desmond Trufant should be ready for camp    Wed Jul 5, 02:43 PM

Atlanta Falcons CB Desmond Trufant (pectoral) is expected to be completely healthy by the time training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Having Trufant might have made a difference during the Super Bowl collapse against the New England Patriots. With a new contract in hand, he will be a big part of the Falcons' attempt to make it back to the Super Bowl.

NFL | Darrelle Revis training to play    Tue Jul 4, 08:59 AM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) is training in Florida in anticipation to play in 2017.

Footballguys view: The question is, which team is going to sign him and for how much? Revis' best days are clearly behind him, and there has been talk of him moving to safety, but is he willing and what is he asking? He didn't have a huge impact last season and we don't think he will this season either.

Bills | Three Bills CBs options at nickel back    Mon Jul 3, 06:38 PM

Buffalo Bills CBs Kevon Seymour, Shareece Wright and Leonard Johnson are expected to compete for the nickel back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Bills will also be breaking into a rookie corner (first round pick Tre'Davious White) and Ronald Darby will be their #1, so this is a vulnerable secondary coming into the season. If the front seven can't generate enough pressure to mask the weakness, the Bills will be a pass defense we are targeting throughout the year.

49ers | Dontae Johnson could start in 2017    Sat Jul 1, 02:06 PM

San Francisco 49ers CB Dontae Johnson is expected to compete with CB Keith Reaser for one of the starting cornerback jobs during training camp.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of NC State in 2014, Johnson has the versatility to line up at multiple positions. He played less than a 100 snaps last year but we could see a larger role for Johnson in 2017.

Steelers | Artie Burns arrested Thursday    Fri Jun 30, 07:47 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Artie Burns was arrested Thursday, June 29, and was charged with driving with a suspended license.

Footballguys view: Miami-Dade County court records show that Burns has not paid hundreds of dollars of traffic tickets and failed to appear for a hearing. Burns posted bond and was released Friday, June 30.

Lions | Teez Tabor could be nickel back    Wed Jun 28, 05:08 PM

Detroit Lions CB Teez Tabor is expected to compete for the nickel back job during training camp. Tabor said he did not play the position at Florida but is willing to line up at the position if he receives playing time.

Footballguys view: At 6'0" 199 pounds, Tabor has the size to be disruptive at the line of scrimmage. He can quickly turn and change direction, and Tabor does a good job of knocking away incoming passes (28 PBUs over last two years for the Gators). Tabor does not have deep speed, so keeping him inside makes sense.

Lions | D.J. Hayden impresses coach    Wed Jun 28, 05:05 PM

Detroit Lions cornerbacks coach Tony Oden said he was impressed with how CB D.J. Hayden performed during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Hayden was a colossal bust during his time with the Raiders. He gets a fresh start with the Lions in 2017 and it looks like he's impressing coaches so far.

Lions | Coach happy with Darius Slay despite lack of INTs    Wed Jun 28, 05:04 PM

Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay has recorded only six interceptions in his four NFL seasons, but cornerbacks coach Tony Oden said he is not worried about the interception number as long as Slay is staying with the team's defensive scheme. Oden said he believes Slay can improve his interception skills and could have more in the future.

Footballguys view: Slay has had two interceptions in each of the last three seasons for the at least he's consistent. As the Lions work to get a better pass rush in 2017, the guys in the secondary should get more opportunities to make plays.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey begins running    Wed Jun 28, 10:11 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey (groin) began running Tuesday, June 27, for the first time since groin surgery.

Footballguys view: That's a big step in his recovery from surgery. Ramsey underwent surgery just about two weeks ago to repair a core muscle injury. Expected time to recover was six weeks which puts the second-year corner back on the field for the start of training camp. They don't do everything right in Jacksonville (see Bortles, Blake) but they've built a helluva defense and Ramsey is among the most talented on that team.

Cowboys | Jourdan Lewis inks rookie deal    Tue Jun 27, 10:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys third-round pick CB Jourdan Lewis signed his four-year rookie contract Tuesday, June 27. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys added some real talent to the secondary with Lewis in the third round and Chidobe Awuzie (Colorado) in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft. Lewis is tough, aggressive and does not back down from a challenge. He's likely best suited to play nickel corner and could eventually develop into a solid pro.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson won't sign deal    Tue Jun 27, 10:49 AM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson will not reach a long-term deal with the Rams before the deadline for franchise players, according to a source.

Footballguys view: There has never been much optimism with Johnson's situation. The Rams will likely lose him next offseason after having tagged him the last two years and paying him $31 million fully guaranteed. Johnson will play a big role in year one of Wade Phillips defense then he's likely to bolt in free agency.

Colts | Indy impressed by three UDFAs during spring    Sun Jun 25, 02:11 PM

Indianapolis Colts RB Dalton Crossan, TE Darrell Daniels and CB Dante Blackmon are considered three players to watch from the team's undrafted free-agent class, according to Kevin Bowen of

Footballguys view: At 5'11" 204 pounds, Crossan was an impressive player during his college career at New Hampshire. He's fast but it takes him some time to throttle down and change direction. Crossan is best used as a player in space, slot receiver or receiver out of the he's got returner experience on special teams. Daniels was a converted wide receiver in college at Washington and stands out on the field due to his long arms and large hands. He needs to be better as a route runner and a blocker, but Daniels is a receiving weapon who could use some seasoning on the practice squad.

Footballguys view: Johnson and the Rams have until July 17th to work out a long-term contract. The Rams may let Johnson hit the open market in 2018 after making $31 million guaranteed over the last two years.
