Bears | Demontre Hurst signs    Wed Feb 25, 06:02 PM

The Chicago Bears signed CB Demontre Hurst to a two-year contract Wednesday, Feb. 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hurst was an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent) for the Bears. This essentially meant the only team he could negotiate with was Chicago. He started two games in the nickel last year and finished the season with one interception and 30 tackles.

Cardinals | Damond Smith signs    Wed Feb 25, 04:01 PM

Free-agent CB Damond Smith (Chiefs) signed with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, Feb. 25, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith went undrafted in the 2013 Supplemental Draft, but he was able to find a home with the Chiefs. The Cardinals are getting a smaller corner (5'11") with 4.4 speed and decent instincts.

Jets | Interest in Byron Maxwell    Wed Feb 25, 07:30 AM

Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) is expected to have the New York Jets among the primary teams interested in him.

Footballguys view: Maxwell is going to generate quite a bit of interest on the open market. Earlier reports have the Eagles as the frontrunner for his services. However, the Jets need to make a move at the CB position, and Maxwell might be their guy...stay tuned.

The Baltimore Ravens are working to restructure the contract of CB Lardarius Webb, who has a $12 million salary cap figure and $8 million base salary for 2015. Cutting Webb would create $10 million in dead money and save just $2 million.

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) is on his way back from a torn patellar tendon and could begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are not going to rush him. If he needs some extra time to heal at the beginning of the season, then Dallas will shelve him for at least six weeks on the PUP list. On the training camp PUP list he could return at any time.

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent SS Dwight Lowery has left all negotiations with the team up to his agent, and the two sides were expected to meet Sunday, Feb. 22.

Footballguys view: Quinn's praise holds a lot of weight around the league. The Falcons new head coach should be able to help this defense play better in 2015. Quinn mentioned how he likes Lowery's versatility, and he had Lowery as a player when he was a coach with the New York Jets.

NFL | Devin Smith's dash time surprises    Sun Feb 22, 08:00 PM

Ohio State WR Devin Smith failed to break into the 4.3's at the NFL Combine Saturday, Feb. 21, surprising many. However, his representation said the problem was all in the initial 10 yards. Throughout the combine he has been checking in a 1.45 seconds in the first 10 yards, but for some reason he was at 1.55 in Saturday's workout.

Footballguys view: Smith will be able to get his time back where he wants at the Ohio State pro day. Most see Smith as a second-round pick.

Chiefs | Ron Parker in talks with team    Sat Feb 21, 03:12 AM

Free-agent CB Ron Parker (Chiefs) is in talks with the Kansas City Chiefs to return to the club in 2015. Parker wants $6 million a season in his contract.

Footballguys view: It would be a wise move for the Chiefs to keep Parker around. He finished second on the team in tackles last year (94 total), starting 15 games (11 at safety) for Kansas City. Parker subbed in for Eric Berry from Weeks 3 to 9 while Berry recovered from a high ankle sprain. He then made the move to strong safety after Berry was placed on the non-football injury list after being diagnosed with lymphoma in Week 13. At this time, it's unknown if Berry will play in 2015.

Free-agent CB Rashean Mathis (Lions) is wanted back on the team by general manager Martin Mayhew, who praised Mathis for his position versatility.

Footballguys view: Mathis has rejuvenated his career with the Lions, and bringing him back would make a lot of sense. A 16-game starter in 2014, Mathis graded out as the 12th-best cornerback, according to Pro Football Focus. He racked up 51 tackles, nine pass breakups and one interception.

Seahawks | Jeremy Lane suffered torn ACL    Fri Feb 20, 12:38 PM

Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane (wrist, knee) suffered a compound fracture of his wrist and a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: I may not have been doctor at the time of the Super Bowl but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express the night before, so I was confident that this injury was bad when we saw it. We knew it would be a long journey to come back from the injury. As has been said before, for a corner to injure his arm is less serious than a leg injury, so we are optimistic.

Falcons | No talks with Dwight Lowery yet    Fri Feb 20, 12:13 PM

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent SS Dwight Lowery has not had any talks with the team about a new contract to this point.

Bengals | May not have spot for Terence Newman    Fri Feb 20, 07:37 AM

Free-agent DB Terence Newman (Bengals) may not have a spot with the Cincinnati Bengals next season, meaning the club may let him test free agency. Newman wants to continue his playing career, according to head coach Marvin Lewis.

Footballguys view: Newman's not the same player he used to be. The Bengals could be ready to move on, and there's likely a CB-needy team who could show interest.

Falcons | Byron Maxwell has team's interest    Fri Feb 20, 07:18 AM

Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) may have interest from the Atlanta Falcons, according to team sources. Maxwell played under Falcons coach Dan Quinn when Quinn was defensive coordinator in Seattle.

Footballguys view: The Falcons need as much help on defense as humanly possible. Maxwell is looking for a pay day after getting plenty of playing time with the Seahawks.

Seahawks | Jeremy Lane needs more surgery    Thu Feb 19, 01:49 PM

Seattle Seahawks CB Jeremy Lane (wrist, knee) had surgery to fix a compound fracture in his arm, but he'll also need surgery on his knee and might miss the start of the 2015 season, according to general manager John Schneider.

Footballguys view: That was a nasty injury but the upside is that it was his arm, not his leg, which would have been a much bigger injury to overcome. Lane was an OK player who made the biggest play of his life in the Super Bowl, picking off Tom Brady, followed by the biggest injury of his career. Hopefully he can come back, but it's important to recall that he was only a fringe player to begin with.

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie to test open market    Thu Feb 19, 12:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie is expected to test the open market in March, according to head coach Bruce Arians. However, Arians made it clear that the team would like to re-sign him.

Footballguys view: Cromartie had a much better 2014 than he did a 2013, but admittedly that bar was quite low. At his age, Cro's skills are in decline but he could be a solid fit for several schemes and should find a home for a nice paycheck, though nowhere what he once commanded. One wonders if Rex Ryan will try and tempt him to Buffalo.

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne still on the mend    Thu Feb 19, 12:51 AM

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) continues to rehab the ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee. Head coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday, Feb. 18, that Claiborne will miss the offseason program, and his rehab might continue into the start of training camp. 'We are (hopeful) about training camp. He might be one of those guys who doesn't start right away in training camp, but that's a long way off.'

Footballguys view: Claiborne will be monitored closely as the Cowboys continue through the offseason. If he's not quite ready by the time the regular season starts, Claiborne could be put on the PUP list to begin the year.

Jets | Dee Milliner not expected until summer    Wed Feb 18, 11:16 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets CB Dee Milliner (Achilles') might not be ready until early summer. The team sounds as if they will use the worst-case scenario as a guide as they venture into free agency. They're not counting on Milliner to be 100 percent.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation. Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, but it's still a serious injury. When asked, both head coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan identified cornerback as one of the team's most pressing needs.

Texans | Kareem Jackson unlikely for franchise tag    Tue Feb 17, 01:13 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent CB Kareem Jackson would love to return to the team, but it's much more likely he'll sign a long-term deal than have the franchise tag placed on him.

Footballguys view: Jackson will be a hot free agent, but the Texans aren't willing to drop the $13 million required for franchise tagged cornerbacks. Teams like the Bengals could show interest in Jackson if he makes it to the open market.

Chicago Bears impending free-agent CB Charles Tillman (triceps) said he is 80% healthy and hopes to be fully recovered from his torn triceps by the time free agency kicks off March 10.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Tillman could be of interest as a part-time player. Tillman's priority in signing with a team this year is to win a Super Bowl.

Bears | Charles Tillman still plans to play    Tue Feb 17, 02:39 AM

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman (Bears) still plans to return for the 2015 season. 'Obviously, I can't play until I'm like 50 or 60. But I just want to keep going. I'm feeling good. I just have unfinished business. I want a championship. I think that's my main reason (to keep playing): I'm hungry for a championship,' Tillman said.

Footballguys view: Tillman could move on from the Bears in free agency. So long as he's healed from his second triceps injury, Tillman could be a nice part-time player on a championship contender.

Jets | Curtis Brown signs    Tue Feb 10, 04:31 PM

Free-agent CB Curtis Brown (Steelers) has signed with the New York Jets Tuesday, Feb. 10.

Footballguys view: Brown was a third-round pick for the Steelers in the 2011 NFL draft. He was out of football in 2015 after getting released by the Steelers last March. Brown spent time recovering from a torn ACL, and now he gets a fresh start with the Jets.

Seahawks | Richard Sherman update    Tue Feb 10, 10:21 AM

Updating a previous report, Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman (elbow) was advised by Dr. James Andrews to let his elbow heal on its own. Andrews will evaluate Sherman again in a month to determine whether surgery will be required. 'He's not a pitcher, and he's not a left-hander. Sherm might not have to have that kind of surgery,' Andrews said. 'If he was a thrower he would.'

Footballguys view: Tommy John's surgery is not as devastating as it once was, but it's a good move to have Sherman let his elbow heal on its own. The Seahawks should take it easy on him as he recovers from this injury during the offseason.

Seahawks | Richard Sherman won't have surgery    Mon Feb 9, 05:46 PM

Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman (elbow) will not have surgery on his injured left elbow as of now, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Sherman dodges a bullet here. It was originally believed that Sherman could require Tommy John surgery. While that surgery is not as career-threatening as it once was, it's still a major surgery and now Sherman avoids it. The Seahawks will take it easy on him leading up to the start of the regular season.

Patriots | Nine signed to Futures contracts    Thu Feb 5, 05:58 PM

The New England Patriots signed OG Chris Barker, DE Jake Bequette, QB Garrett Gilbert, DB Justin Green, OT Caylin Hauptmann, WR Jonathan Krause, LBs Eric Martin and Deontae Skinner and DB Daxton Swanson to Reserve/Futures deals Thursday, Feb. 5.

Footballguys view: Gilbert is the former Texans Longhorns quarterback who transferred to SMU. He was a sixth-round pick by the St. Louis Rams in the 2014 NFL draft, but he failed to make an impact and was released during final cuts. Gilbert was added to the Rams practice squad, but was released less than two months later. He has good accuracy, but his pop-gun arm isn't going to test defenses.

Packers | Jarrett Bush hopes to return    Thu Feb 5, 12:00 AM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent CB Jarrett Bush is hopeful of finishing his career in Green Bay. However, his last contract was for three years and $5.25 million, and it's unlikely the Packers will go that high again, although the veteran's minimum for a player with 10-plus years of experience is $970,000.

Footballguys view: Bush has played well, but will the Packers pay what he thinks he's worth? Or will they hope Casey Hayward can return to the play he flashed his rookie season?

Packers | Tramon Williams hopes for deal    Wed Feb 4, 11:59 PM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent CB Tramon Williams is hopeful of one more multi-year contract before his career concludes. He has said he would like to finish his career in Green Bay, but it's uncertain if the feeling is mutual.

Footballguys view: Williams has played well for the Packers, but how much does he want? And how much are the Packers willing to risk by going with a younger corner across from Morgan Burnett? We'll have to wait and see how this situation plays itself out.

Packers | Davon House wants long-term deal    Wed Feb 4, 11:47 PM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent CB Davon House has said he would like to sign a long-term contract to remain with the Packers, but the team hasn't tipped their hand on how they feel.

Footballguys view: House is in his prime years and might have to weigh whether his best chance for playing will come in Green Bay, or somewhere else. Stay tuned to see how this thing plays out.

Seahawks | Richard Sherman may not need surgery    Tue Feb 3, 04:29 PM

Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman (elbow) might not require Tommy John surgery on his injured elbow as originally believed, according to head coach Pete Carroll.

Footballguys view: Stay tuned here as things could go either way. Our very own Dr. Jene Bramel has this to say about the potential surgery. "This one is kind of weird. It's not something that gets repaired often in non-throwing athletes, so I'm wondering exactly what he's having done. If it's TJ, his recovery could stretch into camp. If not, he may be back much sooner. Either way, not going to affect his long term career I don't think. More to come on this one at some point this offseason I'd bet."

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) is unlikely to participate in the team's offseason program or the early portion of training camp, according to ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: Claiborne is recovering from a ruptured left patellar tendon and he had a knee scope a few weeks ago. In 2015, he'll be recovering from surgeries in both knees. It's certainly a make-or-break year for Claiborne as he's in a contract year in 2015.

Seahawks | Richard Sherman likely needs Tommy John surgery    Mon Feb 2, 09:16 AM

Seattle Seahawks CB Richard Sherman (elbow) will likely have Tommy John surgery in his left elbow in the offseason.
