NFL | Jalen Collins failed drug tests in college    Sat Apr 25, 09:24 AM

Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins failed multiple drug tests while in college, according to sources from four different NFL teams.

Footballguys view: Collins already had questions about his draft stock after he had surgery last month to repair an incomplete Jones fracture in his right foot. He's one of the best cornerbacks in this draft, but these questions around his game could force him to be a late first-round pick.

Eagles | Three UConn players work out    Sat Apr 25, 02:39 AM

Connecticut CB Byron Jones, WR Geremy Davis and DT B.J. McBryde all worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles on Friday, April 24.

Footballguys view: Jones is the player to watch here, and he could certainly be an option for the Eagles with the 20th-overall pick in the first round. He has great size for the position, measuring in at 6'1" 200 pounds. Jones is instinctive and has the ability to break up passes consistently. He's not an elite athlete, leading some to think that a switch to free safety might be in his future. Either way, Jones can make plays and will likely be a top-40 pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Ravens | Kevin Johnson visits    Fri Apr 24, 02:23 AM

Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson visited the Baltimore Ravens and worked out for the team, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Johnson could be a first- or second-round pick in the draft. He lacks ideal weight for the position, but he more than makes up for that with instincts, speed and quickness.

Redskins | Tray Walker visits    Thu Apr 23, 02:34 AM

Texas Southern CB Tray Walker visited the Washington Redskins on Wednesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Walker has great size at 6'2" 180 pounds. He can press wide receivers on the line of scrimmage, but he does struggle to turn his hips in coverage on downfield routes. He's a late-round pick with the ability to move to free safety.

Ravens | Two Ravens have surgery    Wed Apr 22, 11:43 AM

Baltimore Ravens CB Jimmy Smith (foot) and OT Ricky Wagner (foot) had surgeries to correct Lisfranc sprains this offseason, according to a source.

Steelers | Three draft prospects visit    Wed Apr 22, 02:51 AM

North Dakota DE Kyle Emanuel, Utah CB Eric Rowe and Ohio State CB Doran Grant all visited the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Rowe is one of the more talented defensive backs in this class and the Steelers are sorely in need of help there. He's a big, physical corner who might not be the best suited to mirror quicker or faster receivers in man coverage.

Chiefs | Shaquille Richardson released    Tue Apr 21, 05:20 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Shaquille Richardson (undisclosed) was released Tuesday, April 21, with a failure to disclose physical condition designation.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick by the Steelers just last year, Richardson was picked up by the Chiefs earlier this year in February. An injury-riddled preseason with the Steelers led Richardson to being placed on the team's practice squad. The two sides reached an injury settlement last November which left Richardson free to sign anywhere. It's not a good sign that he made it exactly one day into the offseason program with the Chiefs.

Giants | Chandler Fenner signs tender    Mon Apr 20, 06:36 PM

New York Giants CB Chandler Fenner signed his exclusive-rights free-agent tender Monday, April 20. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: An undrafted free agent for the Chiefs in 2012 out of Holy Cross, Fenner was picked up by the Giants and activated off the practice squad last year when WR Victor Cruz was put on Injured Reserve.

Browns | Two players sign tenders    Mon Apr 20, 05:44 PM

Cleveland Browns S Johnson Bademosi and LB Craig Robertson signed their exclusive rights free-agent tenders Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Bademosi totaled 12 tackles in 14 games last season while Robertson made 99 tackles with two interceptions and one touchdown in all 16 games.

Ravens | Two players sign tenders    Mon Apr 20, 05:27 PM

Baltimore Ravens WR Kamar Aiken and CB Tramain Jacobs signed their exclusive-rights free-agent tenders Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Aiken is the player dynasty owners need to watch here. Last year, Aiken caught 24 passes for 267 receiving yards and three touchdowns. At this time, Aiken will compete for the WR3 job in Baltimore behind Steve Smith and Marlon Brown. However, we expect the Ravens to add a wide receiver in the draft.

Giants | Prince Amukamara almost at full health    Mon Apr 20, 05:12 PM

New York Giants CB Prince Amukamara (biceps) said he's about 90% recovered from a torn biceps he suffered last season.

Footballguys view: Amukamara only appeared in eight games last season. He injured is biceps in the Monday Night Football game against the Colts in Week 9. Amukamara still defensed 11 passes and intercepted the ball three times in 2014.

Ravens | Four ERFAs re-sign    Fri Apr 17, 04:52 PM

Baltimore Ravens exclusive rights free-agent TE Phillip Supernaw, SS Brynden Trawick, CB Rashaan Melvin and OT Ryan Jensen re-signed with the team Friday, April 17. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Dolphins | Will meet with Byron Jones    Fri Apr 17, 03:05 PM

Connecticut CB Byron Jones is scheduled to meet with the Miami Dolphins, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Jones will have to pass a medical check after shoulder surgery knocked him out of four games during the last part of the 2014 season. He's got a good size/speed combination, and Jones does a good job of diagnosing plays that stay in front of him. He should be a first- or second-round pick in the draft.

Bears | Trae Waynes visits    Fri Apr 17, 03:06 AM

Michigan State CB Trae Waynes visited the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Waynes is one of the best cornerbacks in this draft class, and he's a lock to be a first-round pick. He's got good length, fluid hips and the speed to stay with any receiver downfield. Waynes also plays with great confidence and has a physical edge to his game.

Giants | Waive two players    Wed Apr 15, 05:27 PM

New York Giants LB Paul Hazel and CB Josh Victorian were placed on no-recall waivers Wednesday, April 15.

Raiders | Will meet with Marcus Peters     Wed Apr 15, 01:40 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters is scheduled to meet with the Oakland Raiders this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Peters was kicked off the Huskies last year after multiple infractions with the coaching staff. He has the size, speed and athleticism to dominate on the outside. Some in the scouting community have compared his skill set to that of Aqib Talib (Broncos). The Raiders could use as much help in the secondary as they can even though they selected D.J. Hayden in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft.

Falcons | Marcus Peters works out    Wed Apr 15, 01:39 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters worked out for the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, April 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Peters was kicked off the Huskies last year after multiple infractions with the coaching staff. He has the size, speed and athleticism to dominate on the outside. Some in the scouting community have compared his skill set to that of Aqib Talib (Broncos). The Falcons selected his former college teammate Marcus Trufant in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Even with his character concerns, Peters should be a first-round pick this year.

NFL | Akeem King drawing interest    Wed Apr 15, 07:54 AM

San Jose State DB Akeem King, a former wide receiver who converted to a safety, is drawing interest as a cornerback as the NFL Draft approaches. The Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders and Seattle Seahawks have all expressed interest in King.

Footballguys view: King can play cornerback or safety at the pro level. He's got good ball instincts and can play close to the line of scrimmage. King is likely going to be a late-round pick or undrafted free agent.

Giants | Josh Gordy signs    Tue Apr 14, 05:53 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Gordy (Colts) signed a veteran minimum deal with the New York Giants Tuesday, April 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Gordy has been with the Colts for the last three years, and he can play either cornerback or safety. With the Giants, we'll likely see him compete for playing time at safety.

NFL | Ike Taylor retires    Tue Apr 14, 09:31 AM

Free-agent CB Ike Taylor (Steelers) announced his retirement Tuesday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Taylor spent his entire 12-year career with the Steelers. In recent years, Taylor was burned frequently by opposing quarterbacks each week. Unable to generate any interest on the open market, Taylor should now get work as an analyst.

Dolphins | Zack Bowman signs    Mon Apr 13, 02:19 PM

Free-agent CB Zack Bowman (Giants) signed an undisclosed deal with the Miami Dolphins Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Bowman gives the team veteran depth at the position. They are looking for upgrades in the secondary, and the Dolphins may add a corner in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Dolphins | Zack Bowman visiting Miami    Mon Apr 13, 09:56 AM

Free-agent CB Zack Bowman (Giants) is visiting the Miami Dolphins Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: It's no secret that the Dolphins are looking for upgrades at both cornerback spots. Bowman would give them veteran depth at the position if added, but we expect the team to also add a corner through the NFL draft...perhaps with a first-round pick.

Jets | Interest in Marcus Peters    Sun Apr 12, 07:37 AM

Washington CB Marcus Peters has drawn pre-draft interest from the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: The Jets could use a talented cornerback like Peters to groom behind Darrelle Revis and Antonio Cromartie. Peters is incredibly talented, but he was kicked off Washington's team after multiple problems with the coaching staff. If he grows up, Peters has the talent to be a shutdown corner in the NFL. Even with his character concerns, we should see Peters taken in the first round of the draft.

Falcons | Working out several MIA prospects    Sat Apr 11, 01:42 PM

Miami (Fla.) WR Phillip Dorsett, Miami (Fla.) TE Clive Walford, Miami (Fla.) RB Duke Johnson, Miami (Fla.) OT Ereck Flowers and Miami (Fla.) CB Ladarius Gunter are all working out for the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, April 11. Miami (Fla.) LB Denzel Perryman is not working out for Atlanta but is meeting with the team.

Footballguys view: There's a lot to like about these Hurricanes prospects. Dorsett has good speed and can be a big-play weapon at wideout. Walford can make difficult catches seem routine, and he's the second-best tight end in this draft class. Johnson is a smaller back, but he has good all-purpose ability. The Falcons are looking for plenty of help in the draft on both sides of the ball.

Dolphins | Will meet with three top CB prospects    Sat Apr 11, 12:58 PM

Michigan State CB Trae Waynes, Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins and Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson are scheduled to meet with the Miami Dolphins prior to the 2015 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins need to find a cornerback in the draft who's an upgrade over Jamar Taylor or Will Davis for the starting job opposite Brent Grimes.

Link to story

Panthers | Interested in Jalen Collins    Sat Apr 11, 10:08 AM

Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins is scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers before the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Collins has the upside to be a shutdown corner in the NFL. He's got ideal height, weight, speed but his technique needs work after only 10 games started during his collegiate career.

Vikings | Will meet with Jalen Collins    Sat Apr 11, 10:07 AM

Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins is scheduled to meet with the Minnesota Vikings before the 2015 NFL Draft.

49ers | Jalen Collins to visit    Sat Apr 11, 10:07 AM

Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers next week.

Steelers | Draft targets clear for Pittsburgh    Thu Apr 9, 10:30 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters is one of three cornerbacks to have a pre-draft visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and six of the team's seven pre-draft visitors have been either cornerbacks or outside linebackers.

Footballguys view: Peters has some character questions after an incident with a coach led to his dismissal in-season, but he is a big, tough corner who has the mentality to hang with NFL talent at wide receiver. He could end up in the first round.

Panthers | Charles Tillman signed    Thu Apr 9, 04:01 PM

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman (Bears) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Thursday, April 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need some help in the secondary, but Tillman is well past his prime at this point. He's coming off a triceps injury which cost him the whole of the 2014 NFL season. Tillman's had health issues for years so we are guessing his impact will be relatively minimal. NFL.com's Nick Till pointed out this transaction may be more about Ron Rivera--a former defensive coordinator of Tillman's from the Bears--kicking the tires on a former player than anything else.

Cowboys | Kevin Johnson visiting Thursday    Thu Apr 9, 02:01 PM

Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson is meeting with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Johnson needs a little more sand in his pants. Measuring in at 6'0" 180 pounds, he'll need to put on some more muscle in an NFL weight room to help his pro prospects. He's an aggressive player downfield who gets a little "handsy" in coverage.

Cowboys | Meet with P.J. Williams    Thu Apr 9, 02:01 PM

Florida State CB P.J. Williams met with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Williams is one of the most physically gifted corners in this year's draft class. He played both safety and corner for the Seminoles, and Williams is a position-versatile player with the upside to be a shutdown corner.

Steelers | Marcus Peters visiting    Thu Apr 9, 12:25 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: A talented cover-corner with prototypical size, Peters has some questions about his maturity and discipline. He's raw and would take some time to hone into a useful NFL weapon.

Lions | Darius Slay might get extension    Wed Apr 8, 10:55 PM

Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay was mentioned by team president Tom Lewand as part of the team's young nucleus, and a potential candidate for a contract extension.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft, Slay has made massive strides as a pro--especially last season. He was the 19th-best cornerback last year according to Pro Football Focus, and Slay could be in for a large pay increase if he continues to develop.

NFL | P.J. Williams pleads not guilty    Wed Apr 8, 05:25 PM

Florida State CB P.J. Williams has pleaded not guilty to a DUI charge Friday, April 3. It is reportedly unlikely that Williams' case will be resolved prior to the NFL Draft on April 30.

Footballguys view: It's no shock that Williams pleaded not guilty. We'll see what the legal process has to say about this alleged DUI. Williams might have the best upside of any corner in this draft class. He began his career in college at free safety, then switched to corner for the Seminoles. He's a scheme-versatile player who should go off the board in the second round of the draft--even with this legal problem lingering.

Raiders | Sign exclusive rights free agents    Wed Apr 8, 05:19 PM

Oakland Raiders DE Denico Autry, TE Brian Leonhardt, OT Matt McCants, RB Jamize Olawale and DB Neiko Thorpe were all signed as exclusive rights free agents Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Leonhardt is a player we'd like to highlight here for fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues. He was signed by the Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2013 after playing college football at Bemidji State. Olawale was a converted wide receiver and fullback who the Raiders signed off the Cowboys practice squad in 2012. The former North Texas standout is only a fullback and special teams player with little (almost non-existent) fantasy value.

Ravens | Meet with Marcus Peters    Wed Apr 8, 01:54 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters has met with Baltimore Ravens, according to general manager Ozzie Newsome.

Footballguys view: Peters has prototypical size for the cornerback position in the pros. However, character concerns could cause his draft stock to fall to the second round. Peters was suspended one game last year by Huskies head coach Chris Petersen for a sideline tantrum that followed personal foul penalty. He was later dismissed from team over multiple run-ins with coaching staff. Maturity problems are his main problem. On the field, Peters plays a lot like Broncos CB Aqib Talib.

Raiders | Brandian Ross signs tender    Wed Apr 8, 12:15 PM

Oakland Raiders CB Brandian Ross signed his restricted free-agent tender Tuesday, April 7. Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ross will play on special teams and as the Raiders third safety behind Nate Allen and Charles Woodson. During his pro career, Ross has played strong safety, free safety and even slot corner when called upon.

Eagles | Add two players    Tue Apr 7, 04:13 PM

Free-agents CB E.J. Biggers (Redskins) and WR Seyi Ajirotutu (Chargers) signed one-year contracts with the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, April 7. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Biggers can line up as a slot corner, but he can also play safety if called upon. Ajirotutu has good length and speed, but he's never done a whole lot during his pro career. He'll likely be used mostly on special teams.

Eagles | E.J. Biggers visiting Philadelphia    Tue Apr 7, 08:41 AM

Free-agent CB E.J. Biggers (Redskins) will visit the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, April 7.

Footballguys view: The Eagles are looking for a replacement for Bradley Fletcher who signed with the Patriots last month. Biggers spent the last two seasons with Washington after starting his career with the Buccaneers. He's a utility man who can line up as a reserve corner or at safety if need be.

Bills | Leodis McKelvin expected to be ready    Mon Apr 6, 10:03 PM

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills CB Leodis McKelvin (ankle) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, head coach Rex Ryan indicated Monday, April 6.

Footballguys view: McKelvin is one of the most important defenders on the Bills' suffocating defense. They don't need to rush him back, and instead will ease him back when training camp rolls around.

Steelers | Antwon Blake signs tender    Sat Apr 4, 10:38 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free-agent CB Antwon Blake signed his one-year tender offer Friday, April 3. He is scheduled to make $1.542 million in 2015.

Footballguys view: Blake has appeared in 30 regular-season games for the Steelers over the last two years. He's primarily a backup on defense, but he's a core special teams player for the Steelers.

Colts | Dwight Lowery agrees    Fri Apr 3, 08:17 PM

Free-agent SS Dwight Lowery (Falcons) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the Indianapolis Colts Friday, April 3.

Footballguys view: Lowery gives them veteran depth at the position, but that's about it. He's terrible in coverage, and we think the Colts will still address their secondary in the 2015 NFL draft.

NFL | Prospect P.J. Williams arrested    Fri Apr 3, 11:35 AM

Florida State CB P.J. Williams was arrested for driving under the influence early Friday, April 3. Williams was projected by some to be a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: This could impact his draft stock. This isn't the first time Williams has had a run-in with the law. Last October, Williams was ticketed by police for leaving the scene of an accident. Some think Williams may fall to the third day of the draft because of this latest infraction.

Lions | Josh Wilson signs with Detroit    Fri Apr 3, 10:57 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Wilson (Falcons) signed with the Detroit Lions Friday, April 3, on an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: Wilson is nothing more than a sub-package player for the Lions. With 85 starts under his belt since entering the league in 2007, Wilson gives Detroit quality veteran depth.

Bears | Sherrick McManis re-signs    Thu Apr 2, 12:45 PM

Free-agent CB Sherrick McManis re-signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: Sherrick McManis is a backup in the secondary with a lot more value as a special teams player. He'll have to show he can still produce as a kicking-team special teams player if he wants to stick on the roster.

Saints | Kyle Wilson headed to New Orleans    Wed Apr 1, 11:25 AM

Free-agent CB Kyle Wilson (Jets) will sign with the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick out of Boise State in the 2010 NFL draft, Wilson struggled to impress during his time with the Jets. He needed a fresh start after disappointing with his first team. With the Saints, Wilson will get a chance to prove that he can be a decent slot corner.
