Dolphins | Backup nickel job up for grabs    Thu Jun 23, 01:24 AM

Jets | Dexter McDougle not jumping out    Wed Jun 22, 01:14 AM

New York Jets CB Dexter McDougle did not do anything wrong during the offseason workouts, but he also did not jump out. The team has five experienced cornerbacks, so beat writer Rich Cimini believes McDougle needs a strong training camp and preseason to avoid being the latest draft pick to be cut.

NFL | Leon Hall may sign soon    Mon Jun 20, 07:25 PM

Free-agent CB Leon Hall (Bengals) may sign with a team at some point next week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have to be considered the frontrunner to sign Hall at this time. We'll see if they make a move for the veteran CB before the start of training camp. We could also see teams like the Dolphins, Giants or Falcons showing interest in Hall.

Panthers | Bene Benwikere should be ready    Sun Jun 19, 05:41 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Bene Benwikere (ankle) should be ready for the start of training camp and will not be limited, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all the help they can get in the secondary after parting ways with former franchise-tagged CB Josh Norman. Benwikere suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the Panthers' Week 14 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He missed the team's run to the Super Bowl, but now it looks like he'll be near full strength when training camp gets here at the end of July.

Panthers | Carolina only choice for Charles Tillman    Sun Jun 19, 01:42 PM

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman (Panthers) only wants to play for the Carolina Panthers once he's fully recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: The Panthers were 15-1 in the regular season with Tillman before an ACL tear in Week 17 put him out for the playoffs and Super Bowl. After parting ways with former franchise-tagged player Josh Norman, the Panthers have collected CBs to find talent. They drafted three CBs in the 2016 NFL draft and they may have interest in the 35-year old veteran if they feel a boost is needed.

Texans | Kevin Johnson should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 18, 01:02 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) expects to be fully cleared for training camp after undergoing multiple surgeries this offseason. Johnson did not practice this offseason, but he has resume running and doing other individual drills. Johnson said he's feeling great after undergoing foot surgery to repair a Jones fracture, and a separate surgery for a broken wrist.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Johnson can be an impact player on defense. We love the fact that he's not the biggest CB but Johnson is incredibly feisty and does not back down from challenge.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson injured    Fri Jun 17, 03:14 PM

Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson (jaw) was involved in a collision during organized team activities last week but will be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jeff Fisher.

Footballguys view: Johnson signed his one-year franchise tender earlier this year with the hope that he could come to a long-term agreement. This injury isn't going to help that. The two sides have until July 15th to work out any new contract.

Raiders | Oakland exploring options in return game    Thu Jun 16, 11:16 PM

Oakland Raiders CB T.J. Carrie is currently the frontrunner to return punts and RB Taiwan Jones is the favorite to return kickoffs, special teams coordinator Brad Seely said, but WR Joe Hansley, RB DeAndre Washington and WR Jaydon Mickens have also been receiving reps.

Footballguys view: Jones should be able to get the job done. However, we want to see Washington touch the ball as much as possible. He could push Latavius Murray for touches as a RB, but Washington has the electric skill set to be a good returner as well.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey learning off the field    Thu Jun 16, 06:25 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey (knee) has been able to watch plenty of film and practices while he nurses his knee injury. Ramsey said he's been trying to stay mentally tuned in and has put himself in positions on the field from a mental standpoint. Ramsey added that he feels great and he'll be good to go for training camp.

Footballguys view: Half of being a corner is watching film, so Ramsey wasn't just hanging out at home. He'll still have a lot of work to do, but we're excited to see him in this defense.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey deems himself ready    Thu Jun 16, 01:03 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey (knee) deemed himself 100% after his May 24 knee surgery. He has been limited in camp, but he said he feels no pain.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars have several players overcoming or dealing with medical concerns. Ramsey, Dante Fowler Jr and Myles Jack could be a great trio on defense if they can stay healthy though.

Texans | Houston safety job will be hot battle    Wed Jun 15, 10:48 PM

Houston Texans FS Antonio Allen, SS Quintin Demps and youngsters S Kurtis Drummond and K.J. Dillon are all expected to battle for the starting spot in the secondary opposite CB Andre Hal. It is expected to be one of training camp's most fierce battles.

Jets | Darrelle Revis not changing style    Wed Jun 15, 07:53 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) said he will not change his playing style even though he is getting older. 'I know what type of player I am,' Revis said. 'There's no need for me to put my energy into those types of things. I've been doing this for a while and I'm going to continue keep on doing it until it's time for me to leave.'

Footballguys view: We know Revis will continue to go hard. The Jets need to plan for the future beyond him but there isn't anyone in line to replace Revis. As we have said before, Buster Skrine is a key part of this secondary as Revis is good enough to continue to drive traffic to the other side. If Skrine can't stop them - or Dee Milliner or Marcus Williams can't - the Jets are in trouble.

Lions | Darius Slay seeking extension    Wed Jun 15, 02:30 PM

Detroit Lions CB Darius Slay said he would like to sign an extension that will reward him for being one of the top seven cornerbacks in the league. Preliminary talks have taken place, but Slay didn't know the status of the talks. Slay is entering his fourth year, and his rookie deal has an option for a fifth year.

Jets | Darrelle Revis doing some work    Wed Jun 15, 02:12 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) is participating in positional drills Wednesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: Revis is on the downward slide of his career but he remains very good. What might be a bigger deal is how things go with Buster Skrine on the other side of the field. Even at 50 percent optimum Revis, most teams will shy away from him, especially if Skrine falters.

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) recently stopped using crutches as he continues to progress from a gunshot wound to his right leg. Talib continued his treatment with trainers Tuesday, June 14 and the Broncos do not expect him to miss any regular season time.

Footballguys view: We won't see Talib on the practice field until training camp. He's fortunate the injury is not more severe.

Broncos | Aqib Talib remains day-to-day    Tue Jun 14, 02:24 PM

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) remains day-to-day. 'We're doing everything we can to get him back for training camp,' head coach Gary Kubiak said.

Footballguys view: Talib's gunshot wound was not serious, so expect him on the field come training camp. The authorities will look into what happened that night, then expect the league to hand out any punishment if needed.

Jets | Darrelle Revis expects to be ready    Tue Jun 14, 12:53 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) said he expects to be ready to take part in training camp next month.

Footballguys view: Revis may not quite be the same player he used to be, but he's still an impact player who is dangerous to throw at. The Jets will monitor him closely through camp, and we may see his playing time in the preseason limited.

Cardinals | Patrick Peterson doing well    Mon Jun 13, 05:00 PM

Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson (foot) said he is feeling great but is only 80% to 90% healthy right now. He reiterated that he should be full-go when training camp starts, adding that the surgery he underwent about two months ago was nothing serious, just cleanup.

Footballguys view: Peterson's on the right track and should be near 100 percent by the time training camp gets here. His presence will boost the Cardinals defense.

Bills | Stephon Gilmore to report to camp    Mon Jun 13, 10:07 AM

Buffalo Bills CB Stephon Gilmore is expected at minicamp this week after sitting out of organized team activities amid contract talks. He won't do much in camp, if anything at all, though.

Footballguys view: Gilmore is set to make $11 million in 2016, but he's a free agent next year. He skipped voluntary workouts in hopes of getting an extension from the team but to no avail. Gilmore is recovering from shoulder surgery, so he'll be quite limited now that mandatory mincamp has begun.

Broncos | Bradley Roby seizing the opportunity    Sun Jun 12, 09:09 PM

Denver Broncos CB Bradley Roby said he has been taking advantage of the extra reps he has seen as a result of Aqib Talib's (leg) absence.

Footballguys view: Roby has star potential written all over him. He's a strong player who can harass WRs at the line of scrimmage, and Roby has the speed to stay with them downfield. We feel Talib will spend his last year in Denver this season, then Roby will take over as the starter opposite Chris Harris Jr.

Texans | Kevin Johnson progressing    Sun Jun 12, 01:35 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (wrist, foot) is not yet running, but he is making steady progress in his recovery from offseason foot surgeries. Johnson has added muscle this offseason, too, and said he is trying to get healthy, bigger, stronger and faster.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Johnson is one of our favorite young CBs in the league. He started 10 games last year, but Johnson played through a Jones' fracture the final few weeks of the season. Not afraid of a challenge, Johnson is a feisty corner who can play close to the line of scrimmage and get physical with opposing WRs. Having him back and healthy will continue to be a great asset for a strong Texans defense.

Chiefs | Cornerbacks hurting    Sat Jun 11, 03:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines (knee) was given a day of rest Friday, June 10, as he continues to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. CBs D.J. White and Shannon Edwards left practice Friday, June 10, with strained hamstrings.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have a great front seven, but their secondary has a couple of question marks. They need guys like Gaines to stay healthy and play well so their defense can stand strong in 2016.

Redskins | Josh Norman likes new defense    Fri Jun 10, 05:10 PM

Washington Redskins CB Josh Norman said he has a good understanding of the team's defense and likes that he will be given a little more freedom on the field under defensive coordinator Joe Barry.

Footballguys view: Norman is a player just coming into his own as a pro. He was a star last year for the Panthers defense, and we have a feeling he's going to be extra motivated this year after the way things fell apart in Carolina. Norman and Bashaud Breeland give Washington a fine starting duo at the CB position.

Bengals | William Jackson signs deal    Fri Jun 10, 05:09 PM

Cincinnati Bengals CB William Jackson III, the team's first-round pick, signed a four-year deal worth $9.705 million Friday, June 10. The deal includes a $5.258 signing bonus as well as a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Jackson was one of our favorite CBs in this draft class. According to NFL.com, Jackson only allowed 40 percent of passes thrown his way to be completed over last two years. He's got the speed to get into the back pocket of a receiver, and he provides great downfield coverage. Jackson has a nose for the ball, and he can make plays at the point of the catch. Once the interception is secured, Jackson has the athleticism to be a threat to score from anywhere on the field. He's going to compete as a sub-package CB this year for the Bengals, but he's got the future upside to be an impact starter in the NFL.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey able to run    Fri Jun 10, 04:39 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey (knee) was able to run in a straight line during practice Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: Fantastic news for the Jaguars here. Ramsey underwent knee surgery a little over two weeks ago and is expected to ready for the start of training camp.

Browns | Joe Haden making good progress    Fri Jun 10, 03:51 PM

Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden (ankle) is making good progress in his recovery from offseason ankle surgery, according to secondary coach Louis Cioffi.

Footballguys view: We'll be happy to see Haden back to full strength for the Browns this year. When healthy, Haden has shutdown corner upside and can be a player opposing QBs have to stay away from. Cioffi said he expects Haden to be ready for the start of the season and believes he can be a Pro Bowl player in 2016.

Texans | Several players miss practice    Fri Jun 10, 03:16 PM

Houston Texans TE Ryan Griffin (Achilles'), RB Tyler Ervin (quadriceps), OT Duane Brown (quadriceps), CB Johnathan Joseph (knee) and CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10. Griffin is not expected to practice until training camp.

Footballguys view: In dynasty leagues, we've got a lot of love for Ervin. His speed and big-play ability could come in handy as a running back or return man with the Texans.

Broncos | Aqib Talib back, being evaluated    Wed Jun 8, 11:25 PM

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) returned to the training facility Wednesday, June 8, for the first time since suffering a gunshot wound. He was evaluated by the team's medical personnel. 'We sent him to our doctors today, and then they will meet sometime this afternoon and try to gather a plan and see where we're at and where we'll go,' head coach Gary Kubiak said. After organized team activities (OTAs) Talib will remain in Denver for rehab.

Footballguys view: There's still much left to be found in this Talib situation. The authorities have an ongoing investigation, and once the legal process has taken its course then we should see the league make a move for a possible fine or suspension.

Footballguys view: Talib was involved in another incident involving a firearm and was shot in the leg. He's going to be okay as the injury was incredibly minor, but right now with an ongoing investigation underway the veteran corner is not going to be on the practice field.
