Steelers | Artie Burns becomes a Steeler    Thu Apr 28, 10:56 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Miami CB Artie Burns with the 25th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The team wanted William Jackson III, but the Bengals stole him, so they made do with Burns. A raw prospect with tremendous speed, teams were very split on him. It may take time but he has the upside to be one of the best corners in the draft.

Bengals | Cincy selects William Jackson    Thu Apr 28, 10:54 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals selected Houston CB William Jackson III with the 24th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Bengals needed to add some secondary talent and William Jackson III is a ballhawk who will generate picks. This selection also hosed the rival Pittsburgh Steelers, who desperately needed a corner and while Artie Burns is solid, Jackson would have been a better fit.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey goes to Jags at No. 5    Thu Apr 28, 08:46 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected Florida State CB Jalen Ramsey with the fifth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Ramsey is a press cover corner with disruptive length who can throw off receivers at the line and on their routes. He can shut down vertical routes as well and this should help the Jaguars defend some good AFC passers.

Jaguars | Jalen Ramsey to compete for starting job    Thu Apr 28, 08:16 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars CB Jalen Ramsey will compete with CB Prince Amukamara for one of starting cornerback jobs in 2016. Ramsey is also a candidate to line up inside against slot receivers.

Cowboys | Dallas down to two players?    Thu Apr 28, 02:49 PM

The Dallas Cowboys seem to be debating between Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott and Florida State CB Jalen Ramsey with their fourth overall selection in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We're hearing that there's a chance this could be smoke to try and get a team (like the Miami Dolphins) to jump up and trade for the third or fourth pick. Elliott appears to be a great running back in waiting, but it seems an odd selection for the Cowboys who could put any number of decent backs behind their offensive line and succeed. We won't put anything past Jerry Jones, but Ramsey makes more sense.

NFL | Jalen Ramsey prefers cornerback    Wed Apr 27, 03:15 PM

Florida State CB Jalen Ramsey said 'corner' when asked what position he hopes to play in the NFL. Some evaluators think Ramsey will move to safety in the NFL while also playing cornerback in certain coverages. 'I will play anywhere a team wants me to play, just like I did in college it doesn't matter to me. I want to play ball,' Ramsey admitted.

Footballguys view: Ramsey should provide an excellent IDP profile for a corner with his ability to play some safety snaps. Even if he lines up at safety, he is such a dynamic athlete that he will be a consideration in the third round of IDP league rookie drafts.

NFL | Jalen Ramsey tops draft poll    Wed Apr 27, 02:19 PM

Florida State CB/S Jalen Ramsey was voted the 2016 NFL Draft's top player in a poll of 19 'national-oriented personnel men' earlier this month.

Cowboys | Jalen Ramsey to Cowboys?    Wed Apr 27, 09:36 AM

Florida State CB/S Jalen Ramsey is a player the Dallas Cowboys are targeting if he's available at No. 4 in the 2016 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: They only have to hope the Chargers don't take him at 3, or that the Chargers don't trade down to a team coveting Ramsey. If Ramsey is gone at 4, the Cowboys are expected to take Ohio State DE Joey Bosa or RB Ezekiel Elliott.

Dolphins | Tony Lippett has chance to start    Wed Apr 27, 12:42 AM

Dolphins | Byron Maxwell at full health    Tue Apr 26, 03:44 PM

Miami Dolphins CB Byron Maxwell (shoulder) said his shoulder is 100% healthy.

Footballguys view: Maxwell missed two games last season with the Philadelphia Eagles because of a sprained sternoclavicular joint in his shoulder. We'll see if he can stay healthy and play better than he did with the Eagles in 2015. We believe in new Dolphins DC Vance Joseph, but he's got his work cut out for him in Miami.

Seahawks | Brandon Browner healthy    Mon Apr 25, 01:27 PM

Seattle Seahawks CB Brandon Browner (knee) said his knee is no longer an issue after he's had seven month to recover from a torn medial collateral ligament.

Footballguys view: Browner is trying to prove that he can still play at a high level with his return to the Seahawks. The Saints released Browner after a disastrous 2015, and he made the quick (and correct) decision to return to Seattle.

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis (wrist) had pins removed from his surgically repaired wrist last week. He still has two months of rehabilitation, however, after having a torn ligament repaired March 17.

Redskins | Chris Culliver in danger?     Sun Apr 24, 07:23 AM

Washington Redskins CB Chris Culliver (knee) may find his roster spot in jeopardy with the signing of CB Josh Norman to a five-year deal.

Saints | Drew Brees wanted Josh Norman    Sat Apr 23, 03:04 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was willing to amend his contract in order to acquire Washington Redskins CB Josh Norman.

Redskins | Josh Norman signing with Washington    Fri Apr 22, 07:41 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is signing a five-year deal worth $75 million with the Washington Redskins Friday, April 22, according to a source. The deal includes $50 million in guarantees.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here in the NFL. Norman now gets to face Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. twice a year, and we can't wait for their first matchup. Washington moved DeAngelo Hall to safety, and now have a true shutdown corner in Norman.

Dolphins | Miami may avoid Vernon Hargreaves    Fri Apr 22, 05:18 PM

Florida CB Vernon Hargreaves III may be available when the Miami Dolphins pick in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft, but some Dolphins evaluators believe he is undersized and is more of a nickel cornerback.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins need help in the secondary, and sitting at the 13th-overall pick we could see them go corner in the first round. Hargreaves is going to interest plenty of teams, but he's not a guy who fits the Dolphins scheme. The Dolphins prefer bigger cornerbacks that can play on the outside.

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) has been contacted by Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not pursuing free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) at this point and have no plans to go after him, according to team sources.

NFL | Possible numbers for Josh Norman deal    Thu Apr 21, 07:32 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman's (Panthers) future deal is expected to be worth between $14 million and $15 million per year, according to sources. Five-year deals are being discussed with the Washington Redskins and San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: That's right where he wanted the money to be, so it's a win for him. The difference might be guaranteed money, though his camp has said that isn't a factor.

Cardinals | Patrick Peterson has timetable    Thu Apr 21, 07:23 PM

Updating previous reports, Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson (foot) said he has a six-to-eight week recovery process from his ankle surgery. As stated previously, he should be ready for training camp in late July.

Footballguys view: They'll need him in the pass-happy NFC. When not subtweeting Josh Norman about being cut, Peterson will be working hard in rehab.

Browns | Joe Haden in walking boot    Thu Apr 21, 06:40 PM

Cleveland Browns CB Joe Haden (ankle) was wearing a walking boot while watching practice Tuesday, April 21. Haden underwent ankle surgery in March.

Redskins | Josh Norman to visit 'Skins    Thu Apr 21, 06:39 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) will make his first visit to the Washington Redskins Friday, April 22, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Washington should sell him hard, as they need the help. If they can pay him, he'd be an immediate upgrade to the 20th ranked pass defense in the NFL per Football Outsiders.

Redskins | 'Skins have offer to Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 06:18 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) has a legitimate offer on the table from the Washington Redskins. The San Francisco 49ers also have strong interest in the cornerback.

Footballguys view: Rumor is the money is in the range of $14-15 million which is what he was asking for. He would be a huge help to a bad Washington secondary and a nice addition to the Niners as well.

NFL | Four teams in on Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 01:30 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is attracting interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, New York Jets, Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: We're shocked the Jets are on this list, given their biggest issue is pass-rush, not corner. Tampa Bay isn't a team that seems to like paying out huge contracts to corners, but the Bears and Titans need the secondary help and have some space. Those could be good fits.

Panthers | CAR didn't want short Josh Norman deal    Thu Apr 21, 11:23 AM

Updating previous reports, free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) had the franchise tag rescinded because the team became uncomfortable signing him to a one-year deal and didn't believe he'd sign a long-term pact, according to general manager Dave Gettleman. 'The more we thought about it, the more flexibility that $14 million would give us,' Gettleman said.

Footballguys view: There has to be more to this, otherwise the move would have been made long before now. That $14 million isn't as valuable when there isn't much to spend it on.

Panthers | CAR door not closed on Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 11:15 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) doesn't have the door closed to him if he wants to re-sign, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: It would have to be at the right price, and given what his camp is talking about, we wonder what that would look like. It wouldn't be bad to bring back a guy who helped you get to the Super Bowl, though.

NFL | Josh Norman wants $15 million annually    Thu Apr 21, 10:00 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman's (Panthers) camp is focused on exceeding $14 million per year, and are pushing for $15 million, but they're not as concerned with total guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Which makes the release from Carolina both more and less baffling. Less because it's a lot of cash but more because the guaranteed money wasn't (allegedly) an issue.

Jaguars | Jacksonville interested in Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 02:56 AM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have interested in free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers), a source said Wednesday, April 20. The team has more than $50 million in salary cap space, and they were interested in Norman prior to his franchise tagging by the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: They have the money and they have the need, but is it a critical one? We think Jacksonville could compete in a relatively weak AFC South, so adding a playmaker at corner would help, but do they have too many holes to justify it?

49ers | San Francisco frontrunner for Josh Norman?    Thu Apr 21, 02:55 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) is drawing plenty of interest, and according to sources the San Francisco 49ers are expected to be the early frontrunner for his services.

Footballguys view: Norman played very well last year and has always been good, so it's just a matter of figuring out how much money it will cost to get him.

Vikings | Two Vikings options likely picked up    Thu Apr 21, 02:44 AM

Minnesota Vikings DT Sharrif Floyd and CB Xavier Rhodes are likely to have their fifth-year player options picked up for 2017. Floyd's option is worth $6.757 million, and Rhodes' is worth $8.026 million.

Footballguys view: Both have been solid for the Vikings, so picking up their options is only good sense. They'll definitely command some good money when that's over, though.

Cowboys | Josh Norman might be option in Big D    Wed Apr 20, 11:45 PM

The Dallas Cowboys might be interested in free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) after CBs Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne posted zero interceptions in the calendar year.

Footballguys view: The Dallas secondary needs the help so, if they can find the cash, this is a good fit. Plus, arrogant players with chips on their shoulders are a thing for Dallas so, personality-wise, this is perfect.

NFL | Josh Norman has been contacted    Wed Apr 20, 06:57 PM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) has already been contacted by prospective teams after being released by the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, April 20.

Panthers | Josh Norman deal was not close     Wed Apr 20, 05:37 PM

Updating a previous item, Free-agent CB Josh Norman's (Panthers) desired long-term deal was not attainable, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Likely he wanted money out of wack with what the position pays for in free agency. We'll see where he lands but can we start a Kickstarter to get the New York Giants to sign him and make him room with Odell Beckham Jr?

Panthers | Josh Norman becomes free agent    Wed Apr 20, 05:30 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman's franchise tag offer was rescinded Wednesday, April 20. He is now a free agent.

Footballguys view: Norman might want some of that sweet, sweet quarterback money. He's also not the easiest guy to deal with. The Panthers are being a bit risky, letting go of a guy who helped carry them to a Super Bowl appearance, but they also won't break the bank for a corner.

Broncos | Chris Harris fully healthy    Wed Apr 20, 02:11 PM

Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) said his shoulder is 100% healthy, and he also said he expects to blitz more this season from the edge.

Footballguys view: The Broncos survived and won because of the defense and Harris was a big part of that. Having him healthy - and the though of him coming off the edge on a blitz - should make Denver fans feel warm and fuzzy.

NFL | Mackensie Alexander receiving bad reviews    Wed Apr 20, 08:12 AM

Clemson CB Mackensie Alexander is receiving bad reviews from some of his coaches because he's a difficult person to deal with off the field, according to numerous sources. Alexander's off-the-field personality has been spoken about at length in war rooms around the league. He has great ball skills, but if he drops down in Round 1 or even out of the first round, it's likely due to his off-the-field persona.

Footballguys view: Alexander can't afford to be a tough evaluation off the field, given that he sometimes seems to get beat by quick receivers off the line. That said, you want a cocky guy at cornerback so there is certainly an argument that his personality should be fine as long as he puts in the work. If someone has patience with him, he should be a solid corner and starter in a year or two, which points to a day two draft spot.
