Steelers | William Gay could be on bubble    Sun Feb 19, 02:27 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB William Gay could be released this offseason since he is scheduled to count $2.63 million in 2017 and is 32 years old.

Footballguys view: He served as the team's nickel back this past season, but the team may want to look for an upgrade at the position.

Steelers | Pittsburgh unsure about Senquez Golson    Sun Feb 19, 02:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert indicated the team is not sure if they will be able to count on CB Senquez Golson (shoulder, foot) in 2017 since he has missed his first two seasons because of injury.

Footballguys view: Colbert said he is not sure if Golson lost any speed because of the foot injury he dealt with during his rookie season. The Steelers will not hesitate to select a cornerback in the 2017 NFL draft even if Golson is healthy.

Rams | Trumaine Johnson could receive franchise tag    Sun Feb 19, 09:59 AM

The Los Angeles Rams are considering giving CB Trumaine Johnson the franchise tag for the second consecutive season.

Footballguys view: If the Rams did that, Johnson would be hitting the open markeet in 2018. If he receives the tag, he will make $16.74 million in 2017. The Rams have until March 1 to make a decision. Tagging him would give the team until July 15th to work out a new long-term contract.

Jets | Jets can void Darrelle Revis' contract    Fri Feb 17, 03:37 PM

The New York Jets would be able to get out of their deal with CB Darrelle Revis, according to a term in his contract, which states that if he engages in personal conduct detrimental to the team, Revis would then be 'in default,' thereby making the contract 'null and void.'

Bills | Stephon Gilmore seeking big pay day    Fri Feb 17, 10:21 AM

Buffalo Bills impending free-agent CB Stephon Gilmore is seeking top-five cornerback money in a long-term contract, according to sources.

Footballguys view: With only $19 million in cap space at this time, the Bills would have to make a few moves to get Gilmore the amount of money he wants per year. The highest-paid corner in terms of annual average salary is Josh Norman (Washington) as he makes $15 million per year. Gilmore would likely seek that amount, and if the Bills franchise-tagged Gilmore it would cost them a one-year fully guaranteed payment of $14.3 million.

Jets | Darrelle Revis facing charges    Thu Feb 16, 09:16 PM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis is facing pending charges of robbery, terroristic threats, conspiracy and aggravated assault as a result of his role in an altercation over the weekend, according to a police statement Thursday, Feb. 16.

Footballguys view: As if the Jets didn't already have a huge impetus to cut him loose. All the facts aren't in yet, of course, but with his contract plus the rapid decline in play this might just be one thing too many.

Jaguars | No talks between Jags, Prince Amukamara    Wed Feb 15, 06:49 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars have not talked with the representatives for impending free-agent CB Prince Amukamara at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars had to be pleased with Amukamara's performance in 2016 as he played on a one-year, $5 million deal. Early speculation has the veteran corner earning around $8 to $9 million annually with a new deal. With over $59 million in cap space, the Jaguars should be able to keep Amukamara around if they want.

Texans | A.J. Bouye unlikely to receive tag    Wed Feb 15, 05:26 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent CB A.J. Bouye likely will not receive the franchise tag this offseason because of the team's salary cap situation. The Texans are expected to have around $25 million in salary cap space available, but Bouye would be scheduled to receive a little more than $14 million in 2017 if he received the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: The Texans would like to keep Bouye around, but they'll have to work out a long-term deal with him. Bouye is one of the best free agents at any position set to hit the open market. He could land a deal that makes him a top-10 paid cornerback in the league with an annual average salary around $12 million or more.

Broncos | Denver interested in re-signing Kayvon Webster    Wed Feb 15, 04:49 PM

The Denver Broncos have reached out to impending free-agent CB Kayvon Webster about the possibility of a new contract, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Webster has been a good reserve cornerback for the team, but he's been outstanding on special teams. He may want to stay with Denver, but Webster isn't going to get a larger role on defense in the Mile High City. Webster could move on to a team where he'll get more of a chance at playing time.

Chargers | Jason Verrett's option should be exercised    Mon Feb 13, 06:59 PM

Los Angeles Chargers CB Jason Verrett likely will have his fifth-year option exercised this offseason.

Footballguys view: Verrett has yet to play a full 16-game season since the team selected him in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft. He appeared in four games last year, and his season was cut short due to a knee injury that required surgery (left ACL). When healthy, Verrett has the ability to shut down some of the best receivers in the game.

Patriots | Malcolm Butler staying put    Sun Feb 12, 01:41 PM

New England Patriots restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler 'won't be going anywhere' this offseason as the team plans to place a first-round tender on him, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: That tender would pay Butler around $4 million in 2017. Other teams could offer Butler a contract, but the Patriots would have the right of refusal. They've got the third most cap space in the NFL, and the Patriots should work to get Butler signed to an agreement that keeps him on the team past just this year.

Chargers | Brandon Flowers not expected back    Sat Feb 11, 04:43 PM

Broncos | Kayvon Webster expected to hit market    Fri Feb 10, 07:08 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent CB Kayvon Webster is expected to test the free-agent market in hopes of finding a bigger defensive role and a bigger salary.

Footballguys view: He was a fourth corner for the Broncos, but he was a standout player on special teams. Webster is big, physical and fast in a straight line.

Cowboys | Janoris Jenkins owned Dez Bryant     Thu Feb 9, 09:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was held to a combined two catches for 18 yards in two meetings with the New York Giants in 2016, and CB Janoris Jenkins said he knows all of Bryant's tendencies. 'Take away the slant and the dig, and when they get in 21 personnel and Dez is inside the number, you take away the corner post, he doesn't have nothing else,' Jenkins said.

Footballguys view: 'Jackrabbit' Jenkins was on fire this season, so him having Bryant's number isn't a shock. Bryant is going to have a more experienced quarterback in Dak Prescott's second year, so that could help but we would like to see him take his game in some new directions so that observant corners like Jenkins don't have a leg up.

Eagles | Leodis McKelvin cut    Wed Feb 8, 02:55 PM

Philadelphia Eagles CB Leodis McKelvin was released Wednesday, Feb. 8.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Bills in 2008, McKelvin is not the same player he used to be. Turning 32-years old in September, McKelvin should get a limited amount of interest on the open market.

NFL | Tramon Williams open to playing CB or S    Wed Feb 8, 02:28 PM

Free-agent CB Tramon Williams (Browns) is open to playing cornerback or safety for his new team, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: That makes sense, and it's a move Williams will have to make if he wants to keep playing in the NFL. Williams started five games at cornerback for the Cleveland Browns this season and two games at safety.

Browns | Tramon Williams released    Tue Feb 7, 06:12 PM

Cleveland Browns CB Tramon Williams was released Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: Williams will turn 34 in March, and he failed to impress as a corner with the Browns. We could see him move to safety if he wants to keep playing. The Browns did move him to that spot for a bit in 2016.

Falcons | Extension coming for Desmond Trufant    Tue Feb 7, 02:35 PM

Atlanta Falcons CB Desmond Trufant will be given a contract extension, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

Footballguys view: Trufant made it through nine games this year before a torn pectoral ended his season. He's the best cornerback on the team, so finding a way to lock him up makes a ton of sense for the Falcons.

Falcons | Desmond Trufant expected back by OTAs    Tue Feb 7, 01:10 PM

Atlanta Falcons CB Desmond Trufant (pectoral) recently told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he 'should be' ready to participate in the team's offseason practices beginning in May.

Jaguars | Jags hope to re-sign Prince Amukamara    Mon Feb 6, 06:31 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars would like to re-sign impending free-agent CB Prince Amukamara this offseason, but he may receive $11 million to $13 million per season in his new contract.

Footballguys view: Amukamara stayed healthy on a one year prove it deal with Jacksonville and will get paid whether by the Jaguars or elsewhere. He was strong as a #2 corner opposite Jalen Ramsey and will start wherever he ends up.

Steelers | Justin Gilbert released    Mon Feb 6, 04:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Justin Gilbert was released Monday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Gilbert is part of the nightmarish pair of first-round picks for Cleveland in 2014 along with Johnny Manziel. He will have a hard time sticking with another team at this point. Former teammate Joe Thomas indicated on Twitter that love of football is an issue with Gilbert.

Jets | Darrelle Revis may have to take pay cut    Mon Feb 6, 09:52 AM

New York Jets CB Darrelle Revis may have to take a pay cut from his $15.3 million salary cap charge to stay with the team in 2017. He has a $2 million roster bonus due March 11.

Footballguys view: Revis isn't a top corner any more, he might not even be a better than average corner. The Jets could move him to safety, but at either position he would be overpaid at a 15.3 million cap number.

Seahawks | Seattle could avoid major punishment    Sun Feb 5, 10:50 AM

The Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to be penalized heavily by the National Football League - and could escape punishment altogether - despite failing to disclose CB Richard Sherman's knee injury during the regular season, according to the NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The issue was never listed on an official injury report even though head coach Pete Carroll admitted at the end of the year that Sherman had been dealing with a minor MCL problem. Sherman did not miss any game time and even participated in the Pro Bowl at the end of the season.

Cowboys | Brandon Carr a priority for Dallas    Fri Feb 3, 10:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent CB Brandon Carr should be the team's top priority this offseason, according to beat writer Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys will have both starting corners entering free agency. Morris Claiborne is younger, but Carr has been more durable. The Cowboys have a lot of players entering free agency and will have to make some hard choices in addition to being resourceful when evaluating other team's free agents.

Chiefs | Eric Murray may have bigger role    Thu Feb 2, 01:21 PM

Kansas City Chiefs S Eric Murray probably would receive a bigger role on defense in 2017 if the Chiefs lose impending free-agent SS Eric Berry or restricted free-agent FS Daniel Sorensen. Murray may compete for a starting job if Berry and Sorensen leave.

Footballguys view: Murray was an all-pro special teamer according to PFF, so he is laying the groundwork for a larger role on defense one way or the other. We should learn more about how the team sees him by how they approach Berry's contract negotiations in free agency.

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said the team wants to sign impending free-agent CB A.J. Bouye to a long-term contract this offseason.

Footballguys view: Bouye isn't a household name, but he will be coveted if he hits the open market as a versatile and productive defensive back. The Texans should have a good chance to keep him as Bouye has said he wants to stay with the team.

Cowboys | Anthony Brown could be a starter    Mon Jan 30, 04:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Anthony Brown may be forced into a starting role if either of impending free-agents CBs Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne don't return.

Footballguys view: Brown played both in the slot and outside because of injuries to starters in his rookie year, so he has a lot of experience for a sixth-rounder going into his second season. The Cowboys probably won't be able to keep both of their current starters, so the team will find out how ready he is whether they want to or not.
