Broncos | Emmanuel Sanders won't face Josh Norman    Fri Feb 5, 12:53 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman said he doesn't expect to line up at all against Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders in Super Bowl 50. Norman is expected to cover Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas instead.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a better matchup for Norman because of his uncanny ability to win at the catch point. Thomas has been struggling with drops lately, and Norman's disruption and true plays on the ball in flight will make it even harder to contend. Sanders is better at running crisp routes and creating separation, and he's likely to be the cornerstone of the Broncos passing offense on Sunday.

Saints | Brandon Browner to be released    Fri Feb 5, 12:12 PM

Updating a previous item, New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner will be released by the team, according to sources. By league rules the Saints can't cut him until after the Super Bowl. Browner will cost $6.3 million against the salary cap in 2016 and is due $5 million in salary and bonuses, including $2.75 million fully guaranteed. New Orleans will save $950,000 in cap space and $2.25 million in cash if they wait until after March 9 to release him. Browner was flagged for 24 penalties (21 accepted) this year, which was the most by any player in a season since at least 2001.

Footballguys view: Browner was maybe the signature player in a pass defense that threatened to break records for futility in 2015. The Saints defense has a long way to go to get back to respectability when they improve by releasing high dollar signings.

Bengals | Darqueze Dennard should be ready    Thu Feb 4, 07:26 PM

Cincinnati Bengals CB Darqueze Dennard (shoulder) should be ready for the start of training camp this offseason.

Footballguys view: Dennard is recovering from a torn labrum he suffered in late November. The second-year corner played a part-time role on defense, but he was a big contributor on special teams. Expect the team to limit him this offseason, and perhaps ease him back in at the start of camp.

Steelers | Brandon Boykin could return    Mon Feb 1, 07:48 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent CB Brandon Boykin could re-sign with the Steelers if they offered the right deal.

Footballguys view: Boykin would have to agree to a good price in order to stay with the Steelers. The team gave up a fifth-round pick (2016) in order to snag Boykin away from the Eagles, and he seemed to get more comfortable with the team as the season went on. The cornerback market is going to be overflowing with talent, so the Steelers will have plenty of options if Boykin doesn't stay.

Rams | Key defenders looking at free agency    Mon Feb 1, 03:45 PM

St. Louis Rams DT Nick Fairley, DE William Hayes, SS Mark Barron, DE Eugene Sims, FS Rodney McLeod and CBs Trumaine Johnson and Janoris Jenkins will enter free agency this offseason if they are not re-signed. McLeod is a restricted free agent while the rest are unrestricted free agents.

Footballguys view: According to OverTheCap.com, the Rams are set to have $32 million in cap space. That's a lot of money to be active in free agency, but it may not be enough to keep everyone listed above.

Dolphins | Adam Jones, Reggie Nelson may be targets    Sat Jan 30, 11:22 AM

Cincinnati Bengals impending free-agent CB Adam Jones and FS Reggie Nelson could receive interest from the Miami Dolphins this offseason since defensive coordinator Vance Joseph worked with them when he was part of the Bengals.

Footballguys view: We're expecting the Dolphins to be much improved on both sides of the ball. However, they're going to have to get creative with salaries if they want to even be a little bit active in free agency. As of right now (according to OverTheCap.com), the Dolphins only have $2.6 million in cap space. That number will change with player cuts and potential contract restructures.

Confirming a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) will play in the AFC Championship Game against the New England Patriots, despite continuing to experience some weakness and pain.

Broncos | Full workload for Chris Harris?    Fri Jan 22, 07:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) is ready for a full workload in the NFC Championship against the New England Patriots Sunday, Jan. 24, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. Harris practiced in full all week and has shown that he is ready to play. 'I think Chris is fine,' Kubiak said. 'He had a good week. ... Everything I've seen this week in practice tells me Chris is fine, ready to go. ... I think he's feeling a lot better than going into last week's game.'

Footballguys view: Harris is playing banged up, but that's what players do in the postseason. It's win-or-go-home for the Broncos as they host the Patriots on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game. He'll likely be tasked with covering Julian Edelman...a matchup that could decide the game.

Broncos | Bradley Roby may play more    Fri Jan 22, 07:37 PM

Denver Broncos CB Bradley Roby may play more in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots with CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) admitting that he may be limited with a shoulder injury. Harris played only 75% of the defensive snaps in the divisional round after playing a team-leading average of 96.9% of snaps on the season. Roby (hip) is listed as probable with a hip injury.

Footballguys view: Roby is an up-and-coming player in the NFL. If Harris is too banged up to play, the Broncos should insert Roby into that spot with confidence.

Panthers | Defense fading in second half    Fri Jan 22, 01:12 PM

The Carolina Panthers defense has allowed 22 points (against the New Orleans Saints), 28 (New York Giants) and 24 (Seattle Seahawks) points in the second half of their games in the last six weeks. CB Cortland Finnegan has been a liability in slot coverage, and fourth CB Robert McClain is playing every snap. SS Kurt Coleman is also injured and has had a bad two-game stretch.

Footballguys view: The Panthers defense is tough, but you can move the ball on them. The Cardinals have a high-powered offense, and they will test the Panthers secondary early and often on Sunday.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald excelled in slot    Thu Jan 21, 07:07 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald lined up for 505 plays out of the slot receiver position this year and had 53 catches for 626 yards. Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman isn't expected to cover him in the NFC Championship.

Footballguys view: Expect another good day from Fitzgerald who was a huge reason the Cardinals advanced last weekend. He may see some Josh Norman, but Norman doesn't get moved to the slot, so he may also be free a lot of the time.

Broncos | Chris Harris expected to play    Thu Jan 21, 03:57 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) is expected to play in the AFC Championship against the New England Patriots, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. President and general manager John Elway said earlier Thursday, Jan. 21, that Harris would be a game-time decision, but Kubiak doesn't agree with Elway.

Footballguys view: This will make things a bit harder on Julian Edelman, but we expect Tom Brady to find a way to get him the ball even against this secondary.

Broncos | Demaryius Thomas was shut down by Pats    Thu Jan 21, 12:58 PM

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas had just one catch for 36 yards against New England Patriots CB Logan Ryan in Week 12. The matchup is expected to be the same for the AFC Championship game, and Patriots CB Malcolm Butler will likely match up against WR Emmanuel Sanders.

Footballguys view: Thomas is doing a good job of shutting himself down lately, considering the case of hand yips he seems to have contracted. The Broncos need him to pull it together soon though, and he'll get plenty of targets this week. His struggles with drops and thel ikely focus on him from the defense keeps him as a WR2 though.

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is expected to be covered by Carolina Panthers CB Cortland Finnegan in the NFC Championship game this weekend.

Footballguys view: Finnegan is certainly not the player he used to be, and this would be a great matchup for Fitzgerald to exploit. With Panthers CB Josh Norman focused on outside receivers like Michael Floyd, we could see Cardinals QB Carson Palmer go to Fitzgerald early and often.

Broncos | Omar Bolden to IR    Tue Jan 19, 01:23 PM

Denver Broncos S Omar Bolden (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list with a knee injury Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. (shoulder) struggled to play through a left shoulder injury against the Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round of the playoffs Sunday, Jan. 17, and was replaced in the base defense by CB Bradley Roby.

Footballguys view: Harris was clearly not himself in this game. He didn't get burned like he did the last time he played against the Steelers, but there were a few plays given up that Harris usually doesn't allow. We'll see him likely limited during the week of practice as the Broncos prepare to take on the Patriots in the AFC Championship Game.

Broncos | Omar Bolden suffers injury    Sun Jan 17, 05:10 PM

Denver Broncos S Omar Bolden (knee) suffered a knee injury during the divisional round playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers and is considered questionable to return.

Footballguys view: Bolden made a big play as a return man early for the Broncos, but they were only able to turn that into three points. He's not much of a factor on defense, but Bolden might be their best return man.
