Broncos | Von Miller talks dormant    Fri Jun 24, 02:22 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller hasn't had contract discussions with the team since early June, according to sources. Miller is under the team's control for 2016 via the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal under the CBA, but the team had set an earlier deadline to get the deal done that coincided with the negotiations coming to a halt. Denver could rekindle talks at the deadline, but if they can't finish a deal, Miller could hold out instead of playing under the 14.129 million franchise tag.

Saints | Austin Johnson's job security unclear    Wed Jun 22, 11:40 PM

New Orleans Saints FB Austin Johnson is the only fullback on the roster currently. He has been on and off the roster recently, and his status heading into the season hinges on whether the team decides they need a fullback.

Jets | Lorenzo Mauldin to play every down    Wed Jun 22, 01:13 AM

New York Jets LB Lorenzo Mauldin had a strong rookie campaign, and the team expects him to be an every-down players in 2016.

Footballguys view: The Jets defensive line has been one of the strongest in the league for a while, but they have struggled to find edge rushers to take advantage of that strength. Maudlin has a chance to break through this year and should be considered a sack-heavy IDP league sleeper.

Broncos | Von Miller talks are stagnant    Tue Jun 21, 02:50 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller's long-term contract negotiations with the Broncos have gone cold over the past 10 to 12 days, according to ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler. The two sides still have sizeable gap regarding guaranteed money. Fowler said Miller has supposedly explored holding out until March, at which point he would become a non-exclusive franchise player. Then, another team could offer a first-round pick and third-round pick for Miller.

Footballguys view: It's late June....and we'll be more optimistic about this situation than others. The two sides have until July 15th to make Miller the highest-paid defender in the NFL. Miller is entering his prime and the Broncos defense is the best in the league....so long as Miller is pressuring QBs on the outside. The math here is simple; pay the man!

Bills | IK Enemkpali has a big chance    Tue Jun 21, 01:08 AM

Buffalo Bills LB IK Enemkpali has worked with the first-team defense in offseason practice and he might push LB Manny Lawson for a starting job.

Footballguys view: Enemkpali is mainly known as the former Jets player who broke Geno Smith's jaw, but he may have a chance to rush the passer often for the Bills in 2016. During the team's recent minicamp, Enemkpali was getting by blockers with inside and outside pass-rush moves.

Saints | Dannell Ellerbe will be ready for camp    Sun Jun 19, 05:32 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe (undisclosed) missed some practices this offseason because of undisclosed injuries but expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Over the last two seasons, Ellerbe has only played in seven games. During 2015 (his first year with the Saints), Ellerbe was limited by hip and toe injuries. He was forced to take a paycut earlier this offseason, but he could make an impact for the Saints this year if healthy.

Raiders | Shilique Calhoun signed    Sun Jun 19, 09:56 AM

The Oakland Raiders have signed LB Shilique Calhoun, their third-round selection in the 2016 NFL draft, to a four-year contract.

Footballguys view: We love the upside that Calhoun has as a pass-rusher. Over the last three years at Michigan State, Calhoun had an outstanding 128 quarterback pressures and 26.5 sacks. He is expected to serve as a backup to LB Bruce Irvin as a rookie, but Calhoun has the ability to be an impact starter someday for the Raiders defense.

Chiefs | Dee Ford dealing with tendonitis     Sat Jun 18, 08:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford (knee) is dealing with tendonitis in his knee, but he practiced Thursday, June 16, in a limited capacity.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to be careful here. Ford could be one of their primary pass-rushers in 2016. Linebacker Justin Houston is coming back from an ACL injury, and his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Tamba Hali is not quite the player he used to be and will likely play a more limited role this season. That means it's time for Ford to shine.

Chiefs | Justin Houston to miss start of camp    Fri Jun 17, 07:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) will not be ready for the start of training camp because he is recovering from a knee injury.

Footballguys view: Houston's status for the start of the regular season is also up in the air. The team is going to limit him in training camp if he does actually get to practice. The hope is Houston is going to be eased in at the beginning of the regular season.

Chiefs | Dee Ford bothered by knee    Thu Jun 16, 10:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford (knee) exited practice with a sore knee Wednesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to be cautious here. They already have LB Justin Houston returning from a knee injury, but his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Tamba Hali is not quite the same player as he used to be, and he's been missing minicamp with his own knee injury. We should see Hali play a smaller role in 2016, so the Chiefs really need Ford to get healthy, stay healthy and make an impact as a pass-rusher.

Broncos | Von Miller threatens to sit out    Thu Jun 16, 12:29 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller posted on Instagram Thursday, June 16, that he will not play the 2016 season under the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: We've heard this before and we'll see. Not playing the whole season impacts his benefits and other aspects fans don't know about, which is why you rarely see guys actually follow through. The Broncos wouldn't fall apart if he sat out, but the defense would certainly take a hit. We'll keep you updated as things progress.

Broncos | Von Miller doesn't want to sit out    Wed Jun 15, 03:49 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller said he does not want to sit out the 2016 season to wait for a long-term extension. Miller said he and the Broncos still have a month to negotiate that long-term deal and he would like to remain with Denver for the rest of his career.

Footballguys view: Fully guaranteed money seem to be the hold-up for this deal. We'll see if the two sides can find a middle ground. This defense would be hurt - though likely not devastated - if Miller sat out.

Bears | Two players absent Tuesday    Tue Jun 14, 08:52 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB Elvis Dumervil (undisclosed) recently underwent a preventative procedure, according to head coach John Harbaugh. Harbaugh did not elaborate on Dumervil's issue, but it is the reason for Dumervil's absence from practice Tuesday, June 14.

Footballguys view: Nothing like specifics. Once anything is dug up about this 'procedure' then we'll be able to comment. This doesn't seem that serious at this time.

Colts | Veteran Robert Mathis looking good    Mon Jun 13, 11:17 PM

Indianapolis Colts DE Robert Mathis (Achilles') is fully recovered from a torn Achilles' tendon which kept him out in 2014, and with limited playing time in 2015. He has been a full participant in the team's offseason program, save for a few days he was held out for rest. Beat writer Zak Keefer noted he looked fast and ready when on the field.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be. He was slowed by the injury last season, but it sounds like Mathis is better this offseason. The Colts had 35 sacks last year, but with Mathis back near full strength that number could grow.

Chiefs | Justin Houston may be at minicamp    Sat Jun 11, 03:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) could be present for minicamp next week, although he probably won't practice, according to head coach Andy Reid. Houston is still recovering from surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Houston's status for Week 1 of the regular season is up in the air right now. The Chiefs need to be cautious with him, and Houston may end up having to start the season on the PUP list--forcing him out of the first six weeks of the regular season.

Raiders | Khalil Mack can be more consistent    Fri Jun 10, 06:33 PM

Oakland Raiders DE Khalil Mack recorded 15 sacks in 2015, but defensive coordinator Ken Norton Jr. said he wants to see Mack play more consistently this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: He's not going to play Michael Schofield (Broncos) every week. Mack is a star in the league, but if he's more consistent then he'll be an even greater asset for the Raiders defense in 2016.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus sits out    Fri Jun 10, 03:13 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: The Texans need to be careful here as hamstring injuries can be tricky to deal with. Mercilus has been increasing his activity over the last week and is not dealing with a serious injury.

Cowboys | Sean Lee expects to be ready for camp    Thu Jun 9, 07:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (knee) said he would be shocked if he was not ready for the start of training camp. Lee believes he's on pace to be on the field when that time comes.

Broncos | Von Miller could sit out in 2016    Wed Jun 8, 11:34 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Von Miller rejected a six-year, $114.5 million deal at some point between Monday, June 6, and Wednesday, June 8. A source close to Miller said the player actually accepted two significant parts of the offer Monday: specifically, the length of the contract (six years) and the overall money ($114.5 million). However, the guaranteed money is apparently where the impasse is, and the impasse has escalated so quickly that Miller could sit out the 2016 season entirely.

Footballguys view: The Broncos were hoping an early offer would get him at minicamps and assure them that he would be in training camp, but he didn't accept it quick enough we guess. We suspect Miller will be in camp, but keep your eyes locked here--and listen to our own Cecil Lammey on 104.3 the Fan in Denver - to make sure you have all the information.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware still a spectator    Wed Jun 8, 11:27 PM

Denver Broncos LB DeMarcus Ware (back) continued to watch practice from the sideline Wednesday, June 8, as the team remains cautious with him following back problems that flared up in the past two weeks. Head coach Gary Kubiak now expects Ware to remain sidelined for the entire minicamp. 'I don't think it makes much sense. What do we have here? Four days or something like that to really do that,' Kubiak said. 'We'll get the entire summer to make sure he's feeling good before we get back out there.'

Footballguys view: It's not that big of a concern, but it is a bit surprising that he has yet to practice this offseason. Ware is going to be a part-time player for the Broncos this year, opening the door for guys like Shaq Barrett and Shane Ray to do more.

Broncos | Von Miller talks break off?    Wed Jun 8, 02:01 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller passed a team-imposed deadline Tuesday, June 7, to agree on a long-term contract. The Broncos have withdrawn their multi-year offer, and Miller will play the 2016 season on his $14.129 million franchise tag. The two sides reached a partial agreement on years and total value in recent days that would have made Miller the highest-paid defensive player, but there were significant differences in how the deal was structured.

Footballguys view: There's five weeks to work out a deal. Miller has not yet signed his franchise tender, and the two sides have until July 15th to work something out. The total contract sounds good ($114.5 MM) but the guaranteed money that reportedly offered ($39.8 MM) is way too low for a player like Miller. The Broncos will have to pay more guaranteed money if they want Miller on a long-term deal.

Broncos | Aqib Talib, DeMarcus Ware not practicing    Wed Jun 8, 01:00 PM

Denver Broncos CB Aqib Talib (leg) and DE DeMarcus Ware (back) are not taking part in practice Wednesday, June 8.

Footballguys view: Talib was involved in another incident involving a firearm and was shot in the leg. He's going to be okay as the injury was incredibly minor, but right now with an ongoing investigation underway the veteran corner is not going to be on the practice field. Talib could be in a lot of trouble with the law..and the league, but it may take some time to lay down any punishment (if any).

Lions | Kroy Biermann visiting Lions    Wed Jun 8, 10:18 AM

Free-agent DE Kroy Biermann (Falcons) is visiting the Detroit Lions Wednesday, June 8.

Footballguys view: The Lions still want to find pass-rushing help if they can. Biermann has spent his entire eight-year pro career with the Falcons. As a part-time player in 2015, Biermann had only 2.5 sacks. If added, Biermann would only be counted on for veteran depth and wouldn't see the field that much unless injuries strike ahead of him on the depth chart.

Broncos | Von Miller not at minicamp    Tue Jun 7, 04:41 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller was not present for the first day of minicamp Tuesday, June 7. Miller is not under contract at this point, so he can't be fined for not being in attendance.

Footballguys view: Miller has yet to sign his franchise tag, and the two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term contract. We should see the Broncos reward Miller with a contract that makes him the highest paid defensive player in NFL history.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware making progress    Tue Jun 7, 02:52 PM

Denver Broncos LB DeMarcus Ware (back) is making good progress in his recovery from a back injury and could participate in some drills before they finish offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: There's no need to rush things here. Ware hasn't practiced at all this offseason, but the team wants him ready for training camp and the regular season. The future Hall of Fame pass-rusher is going to be a part-time player for the Broncos in 2016. That means more playing time for Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett.

Green Bay Packers LB Clay Matthews (undisclosed) is not participating in organized team activities Monday, June 6.

Cardinals | Could still re-sign Dwight Freeney    Sat Jun 4, 03:03 PM

Free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) could still be re-signed by the Arizona Cardinals, according to Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic.

Footballguys view: Freeney has gotten a bit of interest on the open market with teams like the Bengals or the Falcons. Returning to the Cardinals in a similar (part-time) role in 2016 would make a lot of sense. Last year, Freeney was able to snare eight sacks while only playing 245 snaps in just 11 games.

Phillips feels that 'everything is going well' with Ware's recovery from a lingering back injury and added that the organization has 'pinpointed down' the problem.

Footballguys view: No need for the Broncos to rush him back. Ware is a seasoned pro and he doesn't need every rep in the offseason. The future Hall of Fame pass-rusher will be a part-time player for the Broncos in 2016.

Broncos | Team worried about DeMarcus Ware    Thu Jun 2, 01:53 AM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware (back) continues to miss organized team activities (OTAs) due to his back injury, and executive vice president of future operations and general manager John Elway expressed concerns about the injury. 'Yeah, there's always concern with that. Especially with the back, because you never really know. And he's such an integral part of it and his leadership qualities, so obviously we're hopeful he can get that going. We're going to manage him and we knew that coming in this year, to take care of him. Yeah, there's a little bit of concern there,' Elway said Wednesday, June 1.

Footballguys view: Back injuries are tricky to deal with as they can be agitated at any time. Ware missed five games last year dealing with this back injury that kept bothering him during the year. When the team made the postseason, Ware was able to stay healthy and make play after play for the Broncos. They'll wisely monitor him this offseason, and this back problem opens the door for Shaq Barrett and Shane Ray to do more.
