Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee is considered a strong candidate to be cut this offseason, in the opinion of NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.

Footballguys view: Lee's extensive injury history, $10 million cap hit and the presence of fellow LBs Leighton Vander Esch and Jaylon Smith don't bode well for a possible return.

Broncos | Bradley Chubb set franchise record    Fri Feb 8, 10:07 PM

Denver Broncos DE Bradley Chubb's 12.0 sacks in 2018 set a new franchise record for sacks in a season by a rookie.

Footballguys view: Chubb showed the tip of the iceberg during his rookie season in 2018. He looks a bit like a young Terrell Suggs out there with his size, power and burst from the edge. New Broncos head coach Vic Fangio should be able to get quite a bit of use from Chubb in 2019.

Patriots | Several veterans may depart    Fri Feb 8, 01:22 AM

New England Patriots WRs Cordarrelle Patterson and Chris Hogan could be allowed to leave via free agency, in the opinion of Forbes' J.P. Pelzman, who also believes the team could release LB Dont'a Hightower and S Devin McCourty to free up more than $15 million in salary cap space.

Footballguys view: OverTheCap.com currently lists the Patriots near the bottom of the NFL with only $17.8 million in cap space at this time. They could make some moves in order to keep some of their own key free agents.

Chiefs | KC could part ways with Justin Houston    Fri Feb 1, 02:41 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston is due to count a team-high $21.1 million against the cap in 2019, making him a prime candidate to get released this offseason, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Houston might not be worth that much more because of his injury history than his level of play. Houston hasn't played 16 games since 2014 and has missed 21 games over the last four years. The team could attempt to restructure his deal, but they also have Breeland Speaks coming up behind Houston.

Seahawks | Barkevious Mingo may not return    Thu Jan 31, 05:24 PM

Seattle Seahawks LB Barkevious Mingo could be on the roster bubble this offseason because the team would save $3.3 million in salary cap space if Mingo is released.

Footballguys view: Mingo is more role player than core performer. Chances are he'll be looking for yet another team after being part of one of the most underwhelming first round draft classes in recent history.

Vikings | Anthony Barr entering big offseason    Sun Jan 27, 12:06 PM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr could be headed to the free-agent market this offseason if the team doesn't apply the franchise tag, but he said last week that he's ready for all possibilities. 'I'm not sure there really is a plan,' Barr said during Pro Bowl practice. 'I think it kind of dictates itself. I've done what I've done and what's going to happen is kind of out of my control. Obviously I'll have a choice, hopefully, as to where I want to go but I can't control much more than what I'm doing now.'

Footballguys view: Barr didn't make a lot of splash plays in 2018 and the Vikings don't seem eager to pay him at what the market rate would be for his services with a young core already in place and a lot of money committed to new contracts. Sheldon Richardson is also a free agent and the team needs to throw money at the offensive line. They may not tag him with other needs taking precedence.

Vikings | Anthony Barr may not be tagged    Sat Jan 26, 01:28 PM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent LB Anthony Barr probably will not receive the franchise tag this offseason because of the estimated $15 million Barr would receive with the tag, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Courtney Cronin.

Chiefs | Dee Ford open to tag    Thu Jan 24, 03:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Dee Ford wants to stay with the Chiefs and he said he wouldn't mind receiving the franchise tag this offseason.

Footballguys view: Most players don't like the franchise tag because it's a one-year deal and there is no long-term security. Ford seems to be open to the tag, and the Chiefs have plenty of big-money decisions coming up. Franchise tags for linebackers are expected to be worth at least $15 million.

Broncos | Two defensive players not expected back    Mon Jan 21, 10:07 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Shane Ray and CB Bradley Roby are not expected to re-sign with the Broncos this offseason.

Footballguys view: Ray didn't get his fifth-year option picked up by the Broncos for 2019. He was inactive over the last few games of the year as a healthy scratch and his time is clearly done. Roby will test the market, as he should, but there might be a small chance that his market is so cold the Broncos could bring him back. New Broncos head coach Vic Fangio should have a much better defense that fits what Roby does well (zone coverage).

Chiefs | Dee Ford could get franchised    Sun Jan 20, 10:02 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly considering giving the franchise tag to DE Dee Ford, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Ford, a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, had 13.0 sacks in 2018 and is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019. The projected salary for a franchise-tagged OLB is around $15.6 million. According to OverTheCap.com, the Chiefs have around $35.9 million in cap space for 2019 at this time.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander extended    Wed Jan 16, 10:25 AM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander signed a one-year contract extension Wednesday, Jan. 16. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Alexander has had a remarkable (and unexpected by most) surge to his career over the last three seasons with the Bills. At age 35, Alexander finished his 2018 season with 55 solo tackles, 6.5 sacks and two interceptions. So long as he stays healthy, Alexander is a fine asset for the Bills defense and special teams.

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee would not commit to playing in 2019 after an injury-marred season. 'We will see. I am going to take some time and think about it,' Lee said Sunday, Jan. 13. 'Obviously, staying healthy is something I need to do if I want to keep playing. But I do love playing thegame. I love the organization. We have to figure out the future.'

Footballguys view: Lee has logged sp many injuries that this is no surprise. The Cowboys are in good hands at linebacker with Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch.

Indianapolis Colts LB Darius Leonard finished with 14 tackles, including 10 solo stops and a tackle for loss, in a 31-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, Jan. 12.

Houston Texans impending free-agent DE Jadeveon Clowney likely will receive the franchise tag this offseason if the two sides are not able to reach a long-term deal.

Footballguys view: The franchise tag has to be a last-resort option for the Texans. Clowney is one of the most dominant players at his position and we doubt the Texans let him get away.

Hopefully, they share that same sentiment.'

Footballguys view: When you think of the Panthers defense, it's difficult not to think of Davis. A first-round pick out of Georgia in 2005 for the Panthers, Davis has been a cornerstone of their defense. He's not the same player he used to be, but Davis still wants to play and could be one of those players the Panthers don't want to play for anyone else.
