Broncos | DeMarcus Ware still not practicing    Tue May 31, 01:09 PM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware (back) remains out of practice at organized team activities Tuesday, May 31. He's sitting out as a precaution.

Footballguys view: Broncos fans need to get used to this. Ware is going to be a part-time player for the Broncos this year. He should only see the field in obvious passing situations.

Raiders | Karl Joseph plays big    Sun May 29, 11:39 PM

Oakland Raiders SS Karl Joseph plays bigger than he looks, according to LB Bruce Irvin, and Joseph said he has been learning a lot from Irvin as he recovers from a knee injury.

Footballguys view: At 5'10" 205 pounds, Joseph can be an intimidating presence near the line of scrimmage. He reminds us of a combination between T.J. Ward (Broncos) and Darian Stewart (Broncos). Joseph can play close in run defense, but he also has the ability to turn and cover when needed.

Lions | DeAndre Levy on the field Thursday    Fri May 27, 07:25 PM

Detroit Lions LB DeAndre Levy (hip) was able to participate in some individual drills and team drills during organized team activities Thursday, May 26.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall to have finger reexamined    Fri May 27, 04:11 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (finger) said he is scheduled to have his finger reexamined Tuesday, May 31.

Footballguys view: He has been participating in team meetings and is expected to participate in practice in the near future.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall at workouts without contract    Fri May 27, 04:04 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (finger) is participating in offseason workouts even though he has not signed a contract with the team at this point. He signed a waiver to allow him to participate in the organized team activities. He does have an offer on the table worth $2.533 million since he was tendered as a restricted free agent, but he likely will not receive a long-term deal until the team signs LB Von Miller.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have until July 15th to work out a long-term deal with Miller. They should do that with a contract that makes Miller the highest-paid defensive player in the league. After that is done, Marshall should get a long-term deal from the Broncos.

Dolphins | Reshad Jones, others absent    Fri May 27, 02:12 PM

Miami Dolphins SS Reshad Jones is not at organized team activities this week because of his unhappiness with his contract. DE Cameron Wake (Achilles') and LB Spencer Paysinger are also not in attendance. Paysinger is getting married this weekend. Head coach Adam Gase is confident Wake will be ready for the start of training camp.

Redskins | Junior Galette out until training camp    Thu May 26, 11:26 PM

Washington Redskins LB Junior Galette (Achilles') took part in individual exercises during OTAs Wednesday, May 25, and head coach Jay Gruden said Gallete could probably practice but will be held out until training camp in July.

  Broncos | DeMarcus Ware's injury a concern    Thu May 26, 06:10 PM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware's (back) linger back issues are concerning to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. 'Sure, it's a concern because he was out several games last year,' Phillips said.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall had finger surgery    Thu May 26, 03:00 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (finger) had surgery on his right index finger, which explains why he's been limited in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The surgery isn't slowing down contract negotiations. We'll see Von Miller get a new long-term deal from the Broncos before we see Marshall get a new (and well-deserved) contract. The team put a second-round tender on the talented linebacker earlier this year, but he has not signed it. Marshall is at OTAs on good faith (and with a waiver to participate).

Redskins |Two linebackers hurting    Wed May 25, 03:37 PM

Washington Redskins LB Junior Galette (Achilles') will be out until training camp while he recovers from his Achilles' injury, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Gruden also said that LB Perry Riley (foot) is in a walking boot and is having his injured foot rechecked after feeling soreness.

Falcons | Dwight Freeney to visit Atlanta    Wed May 25, 02:31 PM

Free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) will likely visit the Atlanta Falcons next week.

Footballguys view: Freeney is visiting with the Bengals this week, and there's a chance he finds a new home with Cincinnati. If not, the Falcons could certainly use a veteran like Freeney as a part-time pass-rusher.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware doesn't practice    Tue May 24, 02:33 PM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware (back) did not participate in organized team activities Tuesday, May 24. He could return Wednesday, May 25, though.

Footballguys view: The team is just taking a precautionary stance with the future Hall of Fame pass-rusher. His back injury forced him out of the lineup for a few games last year, so the Broncos want to be careful. Fantasy owners need to note we'll see a larger role for LBs Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett this year as Ware becomes more of a part-time player.

Bengals | Dwight Freeney to visit Bengals    Tue May 24, 11:23 AM

Free-agent LB/DE Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) will visit the Cincinnati Bengals this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This would be an interesting (and potentially really good) fit for Freeney. The veteran pass-rusher is best suited to be a situational player at this point in his career. If he signed with the Bengals, Freeney would be a rotational player behind rushers Michael Johnson and Carlos Dunlap. Freeney wants to sign with a contender, and the Bengals are certainly built like a team that can make a deep postseason run.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney full healthy     Mon May 23, 04:11 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) said he is at 100% health. Clowney dealt with a mid-foot sprain late last season but did not undergo offseason surgery.

Footballguys view: Are we sure about that? Clowney's pro career has been marred by injury, and he may never be the player the Texans envisioned when they selected him with the no.1 overall pick in 2014. If he is healthy, then he's going to be relied on to create pressure on opposing QBs opposite superstar DE J.J. Watt.

Panthers | Shaq Thompson in car accident    Mon May 23, 01:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson was involved in a head-on car crash Sunday, May 22, but was not injured. Thompson was cited for crossing the center line.

Footballguys view: We're glad to hear that Thompson (or the other driver) has not been seriously injured.

Packers | Clay Matthews returning to OLB    Mon May 23, 09:10 AM

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers LB Clay Matthews will return to outside linebacker in 2016.

Footballguys view: Fantastic! Matthews can play inside, but he truly thrives on the outside as a pass-rusher for the Packers. Last year, Matthews had only 6.5 sacks rushing from the inside. He could double that number this year if the team is able to move him back outside.

Ravens | Zach Orr could start in 2016    Fri May 20, 03:37 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB Zach Orr is the leading candidate to start at inside linebacker in 2016, but he will have to win the job during training camp. LBs Arthur Brown and Albert McClellan could also be options for the job, but the team may also consider signing a veteran free agent if no one on the roster is able to handle the job.

Footballguys view: Brown has been a huge disappointment since being a second round pick in 2013. He could be a late bloomer, but if he can't clearly beat out players like Orr and McClellan at this point, it's time to move on in even the deepest of IDP leagues.

Redskins | Junior Galette looking good    Mon May 16, 01:03 PM

Washington Redskins LB Junior Galette (Achilles') looks 'fast as ever,' according to LB Ryan Kerrigan. Galette said he was around 80% healthy recently.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be. Galette should be able to help the Washington defense as a part-time pass-rusher in 2016.

Broncos | Dekoda Watson signs    Mon May 16, 11:50 AM

Free-agent LB Dekoda Watson (Patriots) signed an undisclosed deal with the Denver Broncos Monday, May 16.

Footballguys view: The Broncos add some special teams help here. Although Watson is an outside linebacker, he may be best inside for the Broncos 3-4 defense.

Colts | Unlikely to rejoin Dwight Freeney    Sat May 14, 02:47 PM

Free-agent DE Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) probably won't be coming back to the Indianapolis Colts despite his desire to play in 2016, according to ESPN.com's Mike Wells.

Footballguys view: Never say never, but signs seem to indicate that Freeney isn't going to return to the Colts. Freeney is not the same player he used to be and has 12 sacks over the last three years with two different teams (Chargers, Cardinals).

Jaguars | Sign Bjoern Werner    Wed May 11, 04:25 PM

Free-agent DE Bjoern Werner (Colts) signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars Wednesday, May 11. CB Chance Casey was subsequently released.

Footballguys view: A 2013 first-round pick for the Colts, Werner has been a total bust. He was inactive for a handful of games last year and Werner has been largely ineffective as a pro. His snap-to-sack time was best in his draft class, but that has not translated in the NFL. With the Jaguars, Werner will compete for a special teams role and perhaps could make a play or two as a part-time pass-rusher.

Falcons | Sean Weatherspoon feeling healthy    Wed May 11, 03:23 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon (Achilles') said he is in great health and that his movement is light years ahead of where he was last year coming of his ruptured Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: Weatherspoon barely saw the field last year for the Cardinals. Now he's back with the Falcons and will compete for a starting job.

Lions | DeAndre Levy recovering nicely    Mon May 9, 01:42 PM

Detroit Lions LB DeAndre Levy (hip) has been recovering nicely from hip surgery, according to LB Tahir Whitehead. Levy played just 17 regular season snaps before having surgery.

Footballguys view: He reported for voluntary workouts in April and reports indicate he'll be ready to go when training camp starts this summer. Whitehead and Levy are expected to be Detroit's starting linebackers.

Jets | Calvin Pace, Antonio Cromartie could return    Sun May 8, 05:51 PM

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles has not ruled out the possibility of the team re-signing free-agent LB Calvin Pace and CB Antonio Cromartie at some point.

Footballguys view: Cromartie was released in February, and there's been no buzz about him connecting with another team. The Jets are more likely to bring Cromartie back to give them veteran depth in the secondary. They could also bring Pace back, but the Jets picked Darron Lee (Ohio State, 1st round) and Jordan Jenkins (Georgia, 3rd round) with premium picks in the 2016 NFL draft.

Broncos | Von Miller wants to stick around    Thu May 5, 12:40 PM

Denver Broncos franchise free-agent CB Von Miller said he wants to sign a long-term contract that will keep him in Denver for the rest of his career. 'I'm going to be here in Denver no matter what,' Miller said. 'The contract is going to take care of itself. I'm going to be a Denver Bronco for life.' However, Miller isn't expected to show up for workouts this week.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have a proven history of signing their franchise-tagged players to new long-term deals before the July 15th deadline. Miller is set to earn a contract that makes him the highest paid defensive player in the league, and we think Denver will have no problem paying that price. However, it's worth noting that deals get done at deadlines. We're not expecting any movement on this contract situation until July.

Steelers | Decline option on Jarvis Jones    Mon May 2, 11:29 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers declined the 2017 fifth-year option on LB Jarvis Jones Monday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Potential is a dirty, filthy word as three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth (ESPN) always says. Jones had incredible potential as the 17th-overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, but with only five career sacks he's been a huge disappointment. It's no surprise the team wouldn't add the option.

Rams | Pick up Alec Ogletree's option    Mon May 2, 02:30 PM

Los Angeles Rams LB Alec Ogletree's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, May 2, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise given Ogletree's development into a stud linebacker for the Rams. A broken leg caused him to miss the final 12 games of last season, but when healthy he's an impact player. Don't be surprised if the Rams get a long-term deal done with him.

Lions | Zaviar Gooden signed    Mon May 2, 01:12 PM

Free-agent LB Zaviar Gooden (Titans) signed with the Detroit Lions Monday, May 2. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With Stephen Tulloch's status in doubt, the Lions make another move at linebacker here. Gooden was a third-round pick of the Titans in the 2013 draft and was released off of injured reserve last year after he tore his hamstring during the preseason. He's no lock to make the final roster.

Broncos | Von Miller negotiations peaceful    Thu Apr 28, 01:09 PM

Denver Broncos franchise free-agent LB Von Miller said negotiations on a long-term deal with the Broncos are 'just business.' 'My teammates know what type of teammate I am,' Miller said. 'They know what type of guy I am. It's just the business part of it. There's really no hard feelings or anything like that. (The Broncos) know what type of guy I am. I'm expecting a deal any day. That's just the type of mindset I have.'

Footballguys view: Any day now might end up being July when camp starts. The Broncos want him to stay (need him, really) and he wants to stay a Bronco, so we feel this will happen.

Broncos | Von Miller moving closer to deal    Thu Apr 28, 02:02 AM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller said he expects to sign a long-term deal with the Broncos 'any day.'

Footballguys view: It would be in the best interest of both Miller and the team to do this, as the Broncos will continue to lean on the defense long term.

Ravens | Baltimore wants pass-rushers    Tue Apr 26, 02:09 PM

Ohio State DE Joey Bosa and other pass-rushers are the focus of the Baltimore Ravens with their No. 6 pick in the NFL Draft, according to a source. Bosa and Oregon DE DeForest Buckner are considered the top-two pass-rushers in this year's draft class.

Footballguys view: That's a wise move for the Ravens in the 2016 NFL draft. Owner Steve Bisciotti said young pass-rushers are an emphasis in this year's draft because the Ravens don't know how long their dynamic pass-rushers in LBs Elvis Dumervil and Terrell Suggs have left.

Panthers | Thomas Davis progressing with arm    Mon Apr 25, 03:41 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (arm) said his arm is doing really well, adding that he's excited about where he is now as opposed to where he was a few weeks ago.

Footballguys view: He's one of the toughest players in the league and one of our long-time favorites at linebacker. Davis broke his forearm in the NFC Championship and underwent surgery the following day. The Panthers should take it easy on him as he continues his recovery.

Chiefs | Justin Houston will play in 2016    Fri Apr 22, 12:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) was given assurances by doctors that he will play in 2016, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: Houston had surgery to repair an ACL/LCL injury earlier this year. It sounds like he's ahead in the recovery process and may be available to the team later in the season. When he returns, Houston is unlikely to be at full strength. Without Houston, we'll see Dee Ford get a larger role.

Broncos | Von Miller, Broncos apart in talks    Thu Apr 21, 03:23 PM

Denver Broncos franchise free-agent LB Von Miller and the Broncos have exchanged an offer and counteroffer, but general manager John Elway said 'you'd like to be a little closer,' in terms of the two sides' wishes. However, the Broncos remain confident they'll get a long-term deal worked out with Miller.

Footballguys view: Miller will be playing this year, rest assured. The defense needs him and at worst, Miller will be playing for a new contract if he doesn't sign one soon.

Lions | DeAndre Levy works out    Mon Apr 18, 06:00 PM

Broncos | Brandon Marshall at Denver workouts    Mon Apr 18, 11:10 AM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent LB Brandon M. Marshall is participating in offseason workouts with the team Monday, April 18. He hasn't signed his tender and likely had to sign a waiver to participate.

Footballguys view: A bit of a surprise given Marshall's refusal to sign the second-round tender the team placed on him this offseason. We have a feeling the Broncos will be able to work out a new long-term deal with the talented linebacker. After losing Danny Trevathan (Bears) in free agency, the Broncos need to wrap up Marshall.

Broncos | Von Miller has sizeable divide in talks    Mon Apr 18, 08:13 AM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller and the Broncos are about $4 million annually apart in contract negotiations, according to sources. Denver's offer is believed to be around $90 million over five years. Salary-cap guru Mike Sullivan has emerged as a power broker in the roster-shaping process as the team has had a strong bottom-line approach this offseason.

Footballguys view: Deals get done at deadlines, and we're not worried about this until July hits. The two sides have until July 15th to work out a long-term deal. We think Miller ends up signing a deal that pays him roughly $20 million annually.

Chiefs | Justin Houston recovering nicely    Thu Apr 7, 01:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) posted an Instagram video of himself working out less than two months after he had surgery to 'fix' an injured anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. 'Show me someone doing this seven weeks after full ACL and LCL surgery, and I'll show you God's work. I hope y'all watching,' Houston wrote.

Footballguys view: They need Houston back, so this is good news. It's going to be quite the horse race in the West this year, and defense will be a huge part of Kansas City's success or failure against the Broncos, Raiders and Chargers.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall could hold out    Wed Mar 30, 04:19 PM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent LB Brandon M. Marshall may hold out of the Broncos' offseason program beginning in mid-April in hopes of leveraging a multi-year contract extension. Marshall has already received a second-round tender from Denver worth one year and $2.553 million. Marshall would be able to hold out until June 15 without penalty, at which point the Broncos could re-tender him at a reduced rate of $643,500. The Broncos are expected to conduct their minicamp around June 15.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are experiencing the hangover that comes with a Super Bowl win and increased pay expectations from core players. They still need to figure out their quarterback situation and sign Von Miller long term, so Marshall is unlikely to win this standoff.
