Colts | Darius Leonard says he'll be ready    Tue Jun 11, 12:20 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Darius Leonard (ankle) said Tuesday, June 11, that his recovery from ankle surgery will not hamper his preparation over the next six weeks, adding he has no doubt he'll be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Leonard originally opted for no surgery but the problem lingered in the offseason, so he went under the knife in mid-May. The timeline from that surgery puts him in place to be a full participant at some point in training camp.

Dallas Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch (pelvis) is expected to go through some limited work throughout the week for the first time this spring as the team starts its final week of organized team activities, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: The pelvic injury has been keeping the talented young linebacker on the sidelines this offseason. All reports indicate he should be full go by the time training camp gets here.

Giants | Markus Golden eyeing bounce-back year    Sun May 26, 02:06 PM

New York Giants LB Markus Golden is eyeing a big bounce-back season after being hampered by a knee injury and ineffectiveness over his last two seasons with the Arizona Cardinals. 'I come in thinking I'm gonna hunt,'' Golden told the New York Post. 'I'm hunting, every play, any time I'm on the field, every third down, first down, I'm hunting. When you think like that and work like that in practice every day, the results got to come. That's what I always believed. It always worked out for me to just work my butt off every day and don't worry about nothing else, it's gonna come.''

NFL | Gerald Hodges resuming career    Tue May 21, 01:30 PM

Free-agent LB Gerald Hodges (Cardinals) has decided to resume his career, according to a source, after announcing his retirement in April. He is reportedly drawing interest from several teams.

Footballguys view: Hodges had 55 tackles for the Cardinals last year and could be at least quality veteran depth for any team that signs him. His best days were back with the 49ers under then defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. Now that Fangio is the head coach of the Broncos, perhaps they would be one of the teams showing interest.

Ravens | Shane Ray headed to Ravens    Fri May 17, 09:24 AM

Free-agent DE Shane Ray (Broncos) agreed to an undisclosed deal, pending a physical, with the Baltimore Ravens Friday, May 17.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Broncos in the 2015 NFL draft, Ray only played one full 16-game season in Denver. When he did, Ray was quite productive with 8.5 sacks. Nagging injuries, including a wrist injury that bothered him for around two seasons, set in with Ray and he was never the same. If healthy, Ray has good burst and a nose for the quarterback. We'll see if a fresh start in Baltimore gets Ray's career back on track.

Patriots | Jamie Collins joining NE    Wed May 15, 05:38 PM

Free-agent LB Jamie Collins (Browns) agreed to terms with the New England Patriots Wednesday, May 15. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Collins returns to the Patriots after being traded from there to Cleveland in 2016. A second-round pick of the Patriots in 2013, Collins has not looked the same with the Browns. He's an effective player under Bill Belichick and might have a bounce-back season now that he's back in the fold.

Ravens | Pernell McPhee may be option    Wed May 15, 02:35 PM

Free-agent LB Pernell McPhee (Redskins) is a player that the Baltimore Ravens are considering signing.

Footballguys view: McPhee appeared in 13 games last year for Washington, compiling just 11 tackles, one fumble recovery and two passes defensed. A fifth-round pick for the Ravens back in 2011, McPhee was with the team for four seasons. He could come back to Baltimore as a part-time outside linebacker.

Patriots | Jamie Collins headed back to Patriots?    Wed May 15, 01:31 PM

Free-agent LB Jamie Collins (Browns) is in serious talks with the New England Patriots Wednesday, May 15.

Footballguys view: The Browns released Collins in early March and he's garnered little interest on the open market. The Patriots are the team that traded him to the Browns in the first place and it would be just like them to take a flier on a player they know well. Collins won't get a big deal but he could get a shot with the Patriots again in the near future.

Colts | Darius Leonard had offseason ankle surgery    Tue May 14, 05:20 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Darius Leonard (ankle) recently underwent ankle surgery and is expected to rehab for six weeks, according to general manager Chris Ballard.

Titans | Jeffery Simmons sits out minicamp    Sun May 12, 05:58 PM

Tennessee Titans DT Jeffery Simmons (knee) did not participate in the rookie minicamp this weekend but is able to lift and is attending the meetings, according to head coach Mike Vrabel.

Footballguys view: We could be looking at a 'redshirt' year for Simmons. He tore his ACL training for the draft and has been on the road to recovery for a couple of months. Simmons should be limited all through minicamp and training camp, with the earliest projections having him return late in the season...or just debuting in 2020.

Jaguars | Team supporting Telvin Smith    Fri May 10, 01:56 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Telvin Smith, who announced he is planning on taking a leave from football for the 2019 season to deal with personal issues, has the backing of head coach Doug Marrone and the team. 'I really believe in my heart that Telvin knows that we're here to support him in any which way,' Marrone said as part of a statement released Friday, May 10.

Footballguys view: Whatever is going on with Smith, we hope it resolves well for him. Surprise third-round pick Quincy Williams will be one of the best candidates to replace him. #3 overall pick Quinnen's little brother might be an instant hit in IDP leagues.

Dolphins | Nick Perry on Miami's radar    Mon May 6, 03:19 PM

Free-agent LB Nick Perry (Packers) has received 'overtures' from the Miami Dolphins since he was released by the Green Bay Packers in March, and 'there seems to be a real chance' the Dolphins will sign him sometime this week, according to Adam H. Beasley of the Miami Herald.

Footballguys view: Perry has been out there for over a month with little interest garnered. The Dolphins could take a chance on Perry for the right price. If he can stay healthy, perhaps a change of scenery can finally get him to play up to his potential.

Bears | Leonard Floyd's option picked up    Wed May 1, 02:06 PM

Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd's fifth-year option was exercised Wednesday, May 1, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Floyd's best football is still ahead of him. He's continued to improve as a pro, but only has 15.5 sacks through three seasons. Floyd's natural pass-rushing ability could easily net him 10-plus sacks in a single season if he's clicking. A no-brainer move by the Bears here.

Jaguars | Tom Coughlin may have violated CBA    Sat Apr 20, 10:32 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars executive vice president Tom Coughlin may have violated NFL offseason rules when he criticized CB Jalen Ramsey and LB Telvin Smith for not attending a voluntary workout earlier this week. 'We're close to 100 percent attendance - and quite frankly, all of our players should be here,' Coughlin said in a comment posted on the team's official website. The league's collective bargaining agreement states that club officials are not permitted to make players feel like they have to attend any specific workout. If the NFL decides to investigate and determines that Coughlin violated any rules, the Jaguars could be fined, forfeit future offseason workout sessions or even lose a draft pick.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney extension still the plan    Fri Apr 19, 11:13 AM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney is still in the team's plans to sign a long-term deal, according to general manager Brian Gaine.

Footballguys view: Clowney wants a new deal and the two sides have until mid-July to work something out. Deals get done at deadlines in the NFL, so we likely won't have any answer on this until that time.

Colts | Darius Leonard aiming to play lighter in 2019    Tue Apr 16, 09:46 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Darius Leonard weighs 221 pounds at the moment and intends to keep his weight below 225 in order to take advantage of his athleticism.'I'm not a typical linebacker. I'm more of a speed guy, very athletic so if I'm going to play in space, I'm going to need to move. ... I played all my life at 215, 220 and was never over 225. And last year I was injured a lot, that was when I was pretty heavy, so I want to stay down. Hopefully, I can cut some of that down,' Leonard told Kevin Bowen of 1070 The Fan.

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney, the team's unsigned franchise player, will not attend the offseason conditioning program or organized team activities (OTAs). Beat writer Aaron Wilson says there is no deal in sight, and no signing is expected anytime soon.

Footballguys view: Clowney and the Texans have until July 15th to agree to a new long-term deal. They aren't close to that yet, but deals get done at deadlines in the NFL. Perhaps as we get closer to mid-July something will give. Some out there think this could get ugly.
