Chiefs | Tamba Hali feeling disrespected    Sat Jul 22, 07:09 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali fired off a series of tweets on Saturday, July 22, questioning his lack of playing time toward the end of the season and whether or not the Chiefs need him anymore.

Footballguys view: 2014 first-rounder Dee Ford is more central in the team's plans at this point. The central part of Hali's argument with the team is only playing seven snaps in the playoff loss to Pittsburgh. Hali was also "not pleased" with the dismissal of GM John Dorsey earlier this month. We'll see if the team changes his role or otherwise does something to address his concerns.

Saints | Two Saints LBs may compete for one spot    Fri Jul 21, 08:27 PM

New Orleans Saints LBs Manti Te'o and Stephone Anthony may compete for one roster spot during training camp if all of the linebackers stay healthy during the preseason, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: Both were highly drafted and once considered future stars, but Te'o and Anthony are now struggling just to stay on a roster. It might be time to move on in dynasty IDP leagues.

Eagles | Marcus Smith cut would save cap space    Tue Jul 18, 10:36 AM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles LB Marcus Smith, who is likely to be cut, is due a $594,000 roster bonus on the third day of training camp. If he's released before that kicks in, the team would save $1,483,515.

Footballguys view: A first-rounder out of Louisville in 2014 (26th overall), Smith has been a colossal bust for the Eagles. Smith has bounced around the lineup, from inside to outside linebacker to 4-3 defensive end and only has four sacks in three seasons. At the bottom of the depth chart in Philly, Smith should get another chance with some team if/when released.

Panthers | Thomas Davis a priority    Mon Jul 17, 09:34 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis, who is in the final year of his contract, is the team's first order of business, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The two sides want the same thing, so it looks like something could get done -- perhaps even before training camp. A first-round pick for the Panthers in 2005, Davis has been a cornerstone for that franchise for over a decade. Any sort of extension should come at a good price with little guaranteed money as Davis is in the twilight of his pro career.

Saints | A.J. Klein may be on track to start    Sun Jul 16, 06:48 PM

New Orleans Saints LB A.J. Klein may enter training camp as the leading candidate for the middle linebacker job, but he will have to compete with LBs Manti Te'o, Stephone Anthony and Craig Robertson for the job.

Colts | John Simon, Jabaal Sheard to start?    Sun Jul 16, 04:34 PM

Dolphins | Koa Misi on the bubble    Thu Jul 13, 11:00 AM

Miami Dolphins LB Koa Misi (neck) is on the roster bubble, in the opinion of beat writer James Walker.

Footballguys view: If Misi is going to be forced out, someone - Neville Hewitt, Trevor Reilly, Lamin Barrow or Brandon Watts - is going to have to step up. Walker mentions Lawrence Timmons and Raekwon McMillan but current depth charts slot them both at the "Mike" or middle linebacker spot, while Misi is slotted into the "Sam" or strong side. That can easily change, though, and his nagging injuries don't bode well.

Chiefs | Justin Houston pressuring more than anyone    Thu Jul 13, 12:57 AM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston has the highest pressure percentage (18.41 percent) of any defender in the NFL since 2013 with at least 1,000 pass rushes. Philadelphia Eagles DL Brandon Graham (17.51 percent) and Denver Broncos LB Von Miller (17.16 percent) rank second and third, respectively.

Footballguys view: This should come as a shock to exactly nobody who plays in IDP fantasy leagues, as Houston is a big-play waiting to happen each week for his GMs. He seems to be fully healed from the ACL tear which took him out for half of 2016, which bodes well for anyone who drafts him this season.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander to be used different ways?    Tue Jul 11, 09:40 AM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander could be used in a number of ways because the team seems to want someone else to win the starting outside linebacker job for him to roam.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Cal in 2007, Alexander had 9.0 career sacks heading into last season. In 2016, Alexander was an out of nowhere breakout performer with 12.5 sacks for the Bills. This year, they need to get him after the passer early and often...no matter where he lines up.

Redskins | Three WAS LBs may compete for one spot    Sun Jul 9, 06:15 PM

Washington Redskins LBs Martrell Spaight, Chris Carter and Zach Vigil could compete for one roster spot during training camp if the team decides to keep only four inside linebackers. Spaight may be the leading candidate for the spot because the team liked how he played at inside linebacker in 2016.

Footballguys view: Will Compton, Mason Foster, and Zach Brown will be the top three, and all have been relevant in IDP leagues at different times in their careers, with Brown having the most value. Foster came on a nickel linebacker last year and could three-down value if he starts. Spaight has the advantage for the #3 job because the team was happy with his play when Compton missed time last year.

Steelers | Bud Dupree likely will start    Sun Jul 9, 04:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Bud Dupree likely will be the starting left outside linebacker this season. Dupree said he is more confident and has a better understanding of the defensive playbook.

Footballguys view: Dupree missed more than half of last season with an injury, but his natural physical ability flashed in a more aggressive Steelers defense in the second half of the season. He's a potential breakout player in big play/sack-heavy IDP leagues.

Browns | Joe Schobert could see fewer snaps    Sun Jul 9, 08:59 AM

Cleveland Browns LB Joe Schobert is likely to see reduced snaps in 2017, especially if the team uses a nickel defense scheme most of the time. LBs Christian Kirksey and Jamie Collins are expected to start, meaning Schobert's biggest impact could come on special teams, in the opinion of The Cleveland Plain Dealer's Dan Labbe.

Footballguys view: The Browns will be switching to a 4-3 this year, but could spend more time with two linebackers on the field than they will with three. Kirksey and Collins are one of the best duos in the league, and the strength of the defense. Schobert had a good rookie year, but he still won't be a core defensive player this year.

Jets | Dylan Donahue may push for playing time    Sat Jul 8, 02:28 PM

New York Jets LB Dylan Donahue could push LB Lorenzo Mauldin for playing time at outside linebacker during training camp.

Footballguys view: The Jets have rising second-year OLB Jordan Jenkins to take up the most snaps at outside linebacker, but he doesn't have the pass rush talent of Mauldin or Donahue. Donahue seems to be a favorite of outside linebackers coach Kevin Greene, so that could help him if the battle for playing time is close.

Panthers | Shaq Thompson expected to play more    Fri Jul 7, 09:44 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson is expected to play more snaps this season.

Footballguys view: Thomas Davis has been an incredible story of perseverance coming from from three ACL injuries to still play at the highest level. He could be phased out of more situational snaps this year with Thompson's ability in all facets of the game.

Lions | Tahir Whitehead should start    Mon Jul 3, 07:12 PM

Detroit Lions LB Tahir Whitehead will be the starting weakside linebacker this season but could lose snaps to LBs Paul Worrilow and Jalen Reeves-Maybin in certain defensive packages.

Footballguys view: Whitehead was a big fantasy factor in IDP leagues while DeAndre Levy was in and out of the lineup (mostly out of), but first-round pick Jarrad Davis should be a three-down linebacker and reduce the value of Whitehead as he moves over to the weak side.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander to be strong-side LB in '17    Sun Jul 2, 02:17 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander will be a strong-side linebacker in the team's 4-3 defensive alignment this season under head coach Sean McDermott and defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier after serving mostly as a pass-rushing outside linebacker last year under former head coach Rex Ryan.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners in IDP leagues need to take note here. Alexander is unlikely to have as many pass-rushing snaps, but he's a full-time linebacker and could see his tackle total rise from the 50 tackles he had last year.

Panthers | Thomas Davis wants extension    Fri Jun 30, 09:53 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis would like to sign an extension before training camp.

Footballguys view: In the final year of his contract, the Panthers could easily give Davis an extension that would essentially insure he'd retire as a member of the team. Davis turned 34 earlier this year and likely has a couple of years left in the league. A first-round pick for the Panthers in 2005, Davis has to convince Panthers GM Dave Gettleman he's worth keeping around past this season. Gettleman is not known to hand out 'feel good' contracts to aging players...and he's going to deal with a potential holdout from TE Greg Olsen. Stay tuned.

Raiders | No extension for Khalil Mack this year    Thu Jun 29, 09:17 PM

Oakland Raiders LB Khalil Mack will have to wait until 2018 for a contract extension because of the extensions for QB Derek Carr and OG Gabe Jackson, according to sources.

Footballguys view: With his fifth-year option, Mack is under the team's control for two more years. With Carr and Jackson paid, Mack is up next but he'll likely have to wait until next year to get something done.

Dolphins | Koa Misi still in holding pattern    Sun Jun 25, 10:28 AM

Miami Dolphins LB Koa Misi (neck) has still not been cleared to resume football activities, although he has visited a doctor in the last two weeks and is reportedly scheduled to see another doctor right before the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Neck injuries are tricky to come back from, so the team is going to be wisely cautious here. Misi is not guaranteed to be available for the 2017 season, but there is optimism regarding his situation. We shall see what his evaluations reveal before training camp.

Chiefs | Dee Ford had quiet second half    Wed Jun 21, 06:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford recorded 10 sacks in his first nine games in 2016 but failed to record a sack in the final seven games of the regular season.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Ford can be more effective as the season goes on. With Justin Houston back at full strength, the Chiefs should be able to get after the passer early and often.

Vikings | Two Vikings competing for OLB job    Mon Jun 19, 07:33 PM

Minnesota Vikings LBs Edmond Robinson and Emmanuel Lamur appeared to share the snaps at weakside linebacker evenly during minicamp.

Footballguys view: Robinson received most of the work with the first-team defense when Lamur was sidelined with an injury early this offseason.

Dolphins | More Dolphins nursing injuries    Thu Jun 15, 04:31 PM

Miami Dolphins LB Koa Misi's (neck) status for training camp remains unclear as he continues to recover from a neck injury. OT Laremy Tunsil (hamstring) and WR Rashawn Scott (foot), however, are expected to be healthy enough to participate in training camp.

Footballguys view: Tunsil is the most important piece here, as his move to left tackle is critical to the offense. Tunsil has more than showed he can handle the rigors of a full season, so we feel confident he will be Ok this season.

Chiefs | No knee problems for Justin Houston    Tue Jun 13, 10:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston said he knee is feeling good and that he is not dealing with any swelling in the knee.

Footballguys view: Houston has been bothered by knee problems each of the last two years and has been limited to 16 games total during that time. One of the best pass rushers in the league when healthy, Houston could easily post double-digit sacks in 2017.

Rams | Robert Quinn had minor surgery    Tue Jun 13, 07:11 PM

Los Angeles Rams DE Robert Quinn (wrist) recently underwent minor surgery on his hand, according to head coach Sean McVay, and was sporting a cast around his right wrist. He will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: It's minor and not really a big deal, but it is yet another injury for Quinn. He's played in 17 games combined over the last two years due to various injuries. Getting him back on track is something we expect from new DC Wade Phillips.

Chargers | Melvin Ingram signs four-year deal    Sun Jun 11, 05:38 PM

Los Angeles Chargers LB Melvin Ingram signed a new four-year contract Sunday, June 11, worth $66 million, according to a source. The deal includes $42 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: The two sides had up to July 15th to make a new deal happen, and they got this done a month before the deadline for franchise-tagged players. Ingram is going to continue to combine with Joey Bosa to provide the Chargers with great rushers on the edge. He'll move from outside linebacker to "Leo" rusher in Gus Bradley's new 4-3 defense in 2017.

Chargers | Chris McCain limps off    Wed Jun 7, 06:43 PM

Los Angeles Chargers LB Chris McCain (undisclosed) limped off the field Tuesday, June 6, after suffering an undisclosed injury during practice. McCain has been working with the first-team defense during offseason workouts since franchise free-agent LB Melvin Ingram has stayed away from the workouts.

Footballguys view: McCain has seemed like a natural fit at the important LEO rush end position in Gus Bradley's defense. If he is out for an extended period, it could hurt the Chargers negotiating leverage with Ingram.

Jets | Three candidates for Jets MLB job    Wed Jun 7, 04:47 PM

New York Jets LBs Demario Davis, Bruce Carter and Julian Stanford are candidates to start at middle linebacker after the team decided to release LB David Harris.

Footballguys view: Davis should be considered the favorite. Even though none of these linebackers are top talents, the spot next to Darron Lee could be surprisingly good in IDP leagues with the amount of time the Jets defense will spend on the field.

  49ers | Elvis Dumervil joining 49ers    Mon Jun 5, 02:19 PM

Free-agent LB Elvis Dumervil (Ravens) agreed to terms with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, June 5. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Dumervil was slowed by injury in 2016 and only registered 3.0 sacks in eight games. He should move back to DE in the 49ers 4-3 defense. Dumervil is not quite the player he used to be, but if healthy he could bring some heat from the edge.

Eagles | Mychal Kendricks battling hammy injury    Sun Jun 4, 09:54 AM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Mychal Kendricks (hamstring) was limited in practice after sustaining a hamstring injury during OTAs last week.

Footballguys view: The Eagles don't want to get Kendricks more banged up with this hamstring injury, so they'll take it easy on him...especially if they still have him on the trade block. The problem with trading Kendricks is his contract. Due $6.6 million in 2017, there's still $9.1 million left in dead money on his deal. We'll see if the team ends up trading him, so they don't have to release him and take that cap hit.

Bears | Lamarr Houston on track    Sat Jun 3, 02:34 PM

Chicago Bears LB Lamarr Houston (knee) said he is on schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament but does not want to predict when he may be completely recovered. Houston has been participating in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Houston has a couple of knee injuries over the last three years, and he's not played up to the five-year, $35 million contract the Bears gave him in 2014. He's got a $6.9 million cap hit this year with around $1.9 million remaining in dead money.

Free-agent LB Elvis Dumervil (Ravens) has a workout scheduled in the next couple days with the San Francisco 49ers, according to a source.

Footballguys view: He was released by the Ravens in March, and this is the first time a team has showed public interest. If healthy (only played eight games in 2016), Dumervil could be worked in as a part-time pass-rusher.

Denver Broncos LB Shaquil Barrett (hip) will not need surgery on his injured hip but will miss the rest of the offseason workouts and is expected to miss at least a part of training camp, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Barrett is a rotational pass rusher for the Broncos. While he's out, guys like Vontarrius Dora will get a chance to showcase what he can do.

Chargers | Melvin Ingram could sit out    Wed May 31, 04:33 PM

Los Angeles Chargers LB Melvin Ingram could skip the remaining organized team activities and the upcoming minicamp because he still has not signed his franchise tender, according to sources.
