Packers | Green Bay players asked about PEDs    Thu Jul 21, 11:26 PM

Green Bay Packers LB Julius Peppers and LB Clay Matthews will be interviewed by the NFL regarding PED allegations from an Al-Jazeera America report, team president Mark Murphy confirmed Thursday, July 21.

Footballguys view: The statements the reports were based on have since been recanted, but the NFL is going forward with their investigation. The NFLPA has criticized the investigation, which is highly unlikely to yield any punishment for the players involved, which include now retired QB Peyton Manning.

Seahawks | Many replacements for base defense LB    Thu Jul 21, 02:52 AM

Seattle Seahawks LB Frank Clark is expected to fill the pass-rush void of departed LB Bruce Irvin (Raiders), but LBs Cassius Marsh, Mike Morgan and Eric Pinkins are each vying for playing time in the team's base defense and the competition is believed to be wide open.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones to benefit from secondary    Wed Jul 20, 10:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones give the team a top-notch pass rusher, perhaps the best since veteran John Abraham in 2013. Jones is younger than Abraham and DE Dwight Freeney, who had eight sacks last season. Jones will be helped by having one of the league's best secondaries behind him and two-time Pro Bowler DE Calais Campbell working next to him.

Jets | Jordan Jenkins may start in 2016    Wed Jul 20, 04:06 PM

New York Jets LB Jordan Jenkins will have a good chance to start at strongside linebacker in Week 1 if he is able to handle the mental aspect of the game.

Footballguys view: There's a reason why the Jets picked up Jenkins in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft. He's got a large wingspan and the ability to put opposing QBs under duress often. Adding Jenkins only enhances the team's already-strong front seven.

Broncos | Shane Ray adds to arsenal    Wed Jul 20, 09:44 AM

Denver Broncos DE/LB Shane Ray has added a couple of power maneuvers to his speed-rushing skill set this offseason. Ray could play a larger role with LB DeMarcus Ware's role expected to change at age 33.

Footballguys view: We think Ray could get 5-7 sacks this year for the Broncos. Ware is going to be a part-time player, and that opens the door for guys like Ray and Shaq Barrett. The Broncos moved up to get Ray in the first round of the draft last year, and he flashed amazing potential as a rookie in 2015. One thing is certain, there is no shortage of pass-rushers in Denver.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware, Talib will be ready    Tue Jul 19, 02:17 PM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware (back) and CB Aqib Talib (leg) are both expected to be good to go for training camp later this month.

Footballguys view: Ware didn't practice at all this offseason during minicamp or OTAs due to his bad back. He's going to be a part-time pass-rusher this year for the Broncos with guys like Shane Ray and Shaq Barrett playing a larger role. Talib missed part of mandatory minicamp after he was a gunshot victim. The league is investigating the incident to determine whether or not Talib should be suspended. This was not his first incident with a firearm during his pro career.

Patriots | No deal close for three Patriots players    Sun Jul 17, 06:02 PM

New England Patriots LB Jamie Collins, LB Dont'a Hightower and CB Malcolm Butler are all entering the final year of their contracts, but none of the players appear close to a contract extension at this point.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have some interesting decisions to make in the future. We feel Butler may be the first to get a new long-term deal, but this is the Patriots and they move in mysterious ways. If Butler is done during the year, the team could then use the franchise tag on either Collins or Hightower.

Bengals | Dwight Freeney could be option for CIN    Sun Jul 17, 05:25 PM

Free-agent DE/LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) could still receive interest from the Cincinnati Bengals leading up to training camp.

Footballguys view: Freeney has a few spots where he can fit in, and he's already had workouts with the Bengals and the Falcons. We could see the Cardinals bringing him back, and a team like the Buccaneers might want him as a sub-package player. The market isn't white-hot for his services, but Freeney does have enough interest to find a new home--perhaps sometime before training camp. Last year, Freeney was able to snare eight sacks (his most since 2011) while only playing 245 snaps in just 11 games.

49ers | Aaron Lynch may wait for extension    Sun Jul 17, 04:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aaron Lynch likely will have to wait for a contract extension until the 49ers are comfortable with his reliability. Lynch has been suspended for the first four games of the season.

Footballguys view: It's not a good time to ask for a raise if you're Lynch. He'll need to return, stay out of trouble and show that he can build off last year's production. In 2015, Lynch led the 49ers with 62 QB pressures and 6.5 sacks.

Browns | Armonty Bryant may rush more    Sat Jul 16, 03:01 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Armonty Bryant could end up serving more as a pass-rushing linebacker after he returns from a four-game suspension, according to Terry Pluto of The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Footballguys view: Bryant is a talented, but oft-troubled player who can do more as a pass-rusher due to his length, strength and burst combination. He played 460 snaps last year and posted a career-high 5.5 sacks. Bryant also contributed with two forced fumbles. He had better stay out of trouble now that new Browns head coach Hue Jackson has implemented a zero-tolerance policy. Bryant is suspended four games to start the season for violating the league's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

Broncos | Von Miller trade was possible    Sat Jul 16, 02:40 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller's agent asked general manager John Elway for formal permission to explore a trade if the sides could not agree on a deal. Elway informed Miller's agent that the Broncos would not trade Miller and that the offer Miller and his agent ended up agreeing on was final.

Footballguys view: The Broncos drew a line in the sand with Miller after moving that line quite a bit. They were far apart about a month ago, but June is the month of posturing....July is the month when things get done. Expectations are already high for Miller as he's one of the league's best pass-rushers and the clear leader of the league's greatest defense.

49ers | Aaron Lynch suspended    Fri Jul 15, 04:03 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aaron Lynch has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

Footballguys view: It's a blow to the 49ers defense as Lynch is a player that can consistently create pressure (62 QB pressures in 2015) on opposing QBs. Lynch will be able to return in Week 5 against the Cardinals.

Broncos | Von Miller agrees to deal    Fri Jul 15, 02:30 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller agreed to a six-year, $114.5 million deal Friday, July 15, a person familiar with the deal told KUSA's Mike Klis. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have paid a premium price for a premium player. Miller is arguably the best pass-rusher in the game, and there's no doubt the Broncos don't win Super Bowl 50 last year without him. The team put a record (for a defensive player) $70 million in the deal as well. With Miller in the second year of the devastating Wade Phillips' defense, the Broncos are still in a playoff/Super Bowl window in 2016.

Broncos | Von Miller closing in on deal    Fri Jul 15, 12:18 PM

Updating an ongoing story, Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is closing in on a deal Friday, July 15, for six years and $114 million with $70 million fully guaranteed by March 2018.

Footballguys view: Miller's contract will set a new high for defensive players, and he'll be the highest-paid non-QB in the NFL. It's a premium price, but one that Miller is worth as the MVP of the league's greatest defense.

Broncos | Von Miller expected to ink extension    Fri Jul 15, 08:26 AM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is expected to accept a six-year, $114.5 million extension with $70 million in guarantees before the deadline Friday, July 15. In average annual value and total guaranteed dollars, Miller will become the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history, and his contract will be the richest at any position other than quarterback.

Footballguys view: Miller went nuts during the Broncos playoff run last year, and he capped things off with a Super Bowl championship and MVP trophy. The Broncos now are going to play a premium price tag for a premium player that keeps them in the Super Bowl conversation in 2016.

NFL | LaMarr Woodley awaiting a call    Fri Jul 15, 02:11 AM

Free-agent LB LaMarr Woodley (Cardinals) said Thursday, July 14, he'll be ready if a team calls him with interest. 'Yeah, I'm staying in shape, but the thing is, I've put myself in a situation where I've been hurt these past few years, so I don't really control my situation right now,' Woodley said. 'I still can go out there and play at a high level. I just have to be out there on the field to go out there and play at a high level and not just be used for certain situations as far as going out there stopping the run.'

Footballguys view: Woodley's last two seasons have ended on I.R. and there may not be much left for him to contribute in the NFL. He's appeared in 16 games over the last two years, but he hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2010. Most around the league consider him to be washed up at this point in his career.

Broncos | Denver still hopeful for Von Miller    Thu Jul 14, 04:32 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is still without a long-term contract just one day before the deadline, Friday, July 15, but the Broncos remain hopeful that they can ink their star pass-rusher as talks have become more private. Denver believes a lot of progress has been made, according to a source, although any updates regarding negotiations have not been leaked by either side.

Footballguys view: It seems as though the Broncos have laid out their offer and it's up to Miller to take it or not. If Miller didn't and then chose to sit out the season, Shane Ray would have to step up to either take Miller's place at strong side linebacker or DeMarcus Ware's if the veteran moved over to SLB instead. In that case, how big a hit the defense would take would depend on how ready for prime time the second year Ray is.

Broncos | Teammate thinks Von Miller would sit out    Wed Jul 13, 05:22 PM

Denver Broncos CB Chris Harris Jr. said he believes LB Von Miller would sit out if he is not able to agree to a long-term deal before July 15. 'I believe him,' Harris said. 'You've got to take his word for it. It would be hard for me to sit out, missing out on $14 million, but I think Von is serious in what he's saying. I think he truly, this whole time just talking to him, he hates the franchise tag. I definitely think he won't sign it.'

Footballguys view: Miller is currently working with the Broncos to get a new deal done. The two sides have had a lot of positive momentum over the last week, and we feel they'll find a way to make him the highest-paid defensive player in league history. The deadline to sign Miller is Friday, July 15th at 4pm ET.

Broncos | Von Miller not a trade option yet    Mon Jul 11, 07:35 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is not a trade option at this point because the Broncos are only focused on signing him to a long-term contract before Friday, July 15.

Footballguys view: The Broncos don't have time to shop Miller as a trade piece. They have put negotiations with WR Emmanuel Sanders on hold just so they can solely focus on Miller's deal. The deadline is Friday, but we wouldn't be shocked to see this deal done before Thursday.

Broncos | Von Miller not playing under tag    Mon Jul 11, 05:26 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller said he will not play under the one-year franchise tender if the two sides are not able to reach a long-term extension before Friday, July 15. Miller said it is not about the money but believes that the franchise is unfair to the players. 'I've never really played for money,' Miller said. 'It's bigger than that for me. It's a league-wide problem that I feel like I'm in a situation to help out with.'

Footballguys view: Miller made a similar statement last month after the team visited President Obama at the White House. It's part of the posturing necessary to get the new long-term deal he wants from the Broncos. More than a few proposals have been exchanged, and we feel the two sides come to an agreement before the July 15th deadline to sign franchise-tagged players.

Broncos | Von Miller making progress in talks    Sun Jul 10, 04:50 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller has made significant progress in contract talks with the Denver, but the two sides were not expected to talk Sunday, July 10.

Footballguys view: The deadline to sign Miller is on Friday, and we're expecting something to get done. Reports indicate the Broncos may be offering him over $60 million guaranteed in the first three years of the contract. That number might have to climb just a bit to beat the $63.2 million Fletcher Cox (Eagles) received earlier this offseason.

Broncos | Denver amends Von Miller contract offer    Sun Jul 10, 12:29 PM

The Denver Broncos have increased the amount of guaranteed money in their six-year, $114.5 million contract offer to LB Von Miller. Previously, the Broncos had offered $58 million guaranteed but that figure has reportedly been increased to $61 million. Miller had been seeking approximately $70 million in guaranteed money at one point.

Footballguys view: We see this deal getting done with Miller, but $61 million in guarantees may not be enough. If the Broncos get above the $63.2 million that Fletcher Cox (Eagles) was guaranteed then this should be a wrap and Miller should gladly stay with Denver.

Broncos | Von Miller wants to sign soon    Sat Jul 9, 03:09 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller wants to get a long-term deal done before the July 15 deadline. If a deal is not done by that time, Miller would have to play the 2016 season under the franchise tag, something he has already said he won't do.

Footballguys view: All signs point to Miller getting the deal he wants from the Broncos...perhaps even before the July 15th deadline. After a month of posturing in June, the ball got rolling over the 4th of July weekend. With less than a week until the deadline, expect the two sides to work out an agreement that makes Miller the highest-paid defensive player in NFL history.

Broncos | Denver working on signing Von Miller    Sat Jul 9, 09:59 AM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller has received two new contract proposals over the last few days, and the two sides are expected to speak again Saturday, July 9. The Broncos have agreed to move up some of the guaranteed money from 2018 to 2017 as part of their new proposal.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are making strong moves to get this deal done with Miller. The deadline to sign the All-Pro pass-rusher to a long-term contract is Friday, July 15th. With the positive momentum here, don't be surprised if Miller is signed earlier in the week.

Broncos | Denver, Von Miller exchange offers    Fri Jul 8, 03:28 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Von Miller and the Broncos have exchanged contract proposals over the last few days, according to a source. The two sides still have not been able to agree on the structure of the guaranteed money in the contract as well as the payment in the first two to three years.

Footballguys view: The Broncos could have some issues if Miller sits out the season, but Miller doesn't really want that. We think they will come to terms by the end of next week. We've had three positives signs during the course of this week that the Broncos are intent on getting this deal done.

Broncos | Denver to speak with Von Miller again    Fri Jul 8, 12:10 PM

The Denver Broncos have scheduled a phone call with LB Von Miller Friday, July 8, and his agent, Joby Branion, according to league sources. The Broncos are believed to have modified their offer to Miller recently to fully guarantee a third year of their proposed six-year, $114.5 million deal.

Footballguys view: This is the third positive sign we've seen this week from the Broncos. First, we learned GM John Elway reached out to Miller over the July 4th weekend. Next, we learned the team had put contract discussions with WR Emmanuel Sanders on hold (likely to fully concentrate on Miller). Now, the two sides are going to talk on Friday. We don't think something gets done until the deadline next Friday, but things are tracking positively in this situation. The deadline to sign franchise-tagged players to multi-year deals is July 15.

Broncos | John Elway contacted Von Miller    Tue Jul 5, 05:48 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Von Miller was contacted by general manager John Elway over the weekend. Elway wanted to personally talk to Miller to express his desire to work out a long-term deal. Both sides talked for 10 to 15 minutes, and Elway told Miller that the Broncos still love him and still want him to return to Denver, according to sources.

Footballguys view: There are less than 10 days to go in order to sign Miller to a long-term contract, but we feel confident the two sides can come to an agreement. The guaranteed money seems to be the primary hold up here as the length and overall value don't seem to be a problem. Even though we expect something to happen, we're not looking for it to happen until the day of the deadline (July 15th).

Washington Redskins LB Junior Galette (Achilles') looked explosive without pads during offseason activities, according to The Washington Post's Mike Jones. Galette is expected to be ready for training camp on his way back from a torn Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: Washington should be easy on Galette when he does return to the practice field as his status for the beginning of camp is in question. The team is likely to ease him back in, and he should begin the season as a part-time pass-rusher. He'll be almost a year removed from the injury when the regular season starts.

Broncos | Von Miller has had recent talks    Tue Jul 5, 11:41 AM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller has had recent communication with the team, and the two sides could talk more later this week. The deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign a multi-year deal is July 15.

Footballguys view: That's a good sign for Miller and the Broncos. Miller is arguably the best pass-rusher in the league, and his new contract could easily be the largest one paid to a defensive player. This big deal is going to take some time to get done, so we expect this to go right down to the wire.

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) said he is feeling healthy and will visit with a specialist in early July. He said he plans to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Mercilus was a beast last year for the Texans. He compiled a career-high 11 sacks while also snaring 32 tackles, forcing one fumble (plus recovering it) and defending two passes. This hamstring injury sidelined him for OTAs and minicamp, but Mercilus stuck around the team facility to continue his rehab. The Texans should wisely be cautious with him at the start of camp.

Broncos | Von Miller talks dormant    Fri Jun 24, 02:22 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller hasn't had contract discussions with the team since early June, according to sources. Miller is under the team's control for 2016 via the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have until July 15 to negotiate a long-term deal under the CBA, but the team had set an earlier deadline to get the deal done that coincided with the negotiations coming to a halt. Denver could rekindle talks at the deadline, but if they can't finish a deal, Miller could hold out instead of playing under the 14.129 million franchise tag.

New York Jets LB Lorenzo Mauldin had a strong rookie campaign, and the team expects him to be an every-down players in 2016.

Footballguys view: The Jets defensive line has been one of the strongest in the league for a while, but they have struggled to find edge rushers to take advantage of that strength. Maudlin has a chance to break through this year and should be considered a sack-heavy IDP league sleeper.

Broncos | Von Miller talks are stagnant    Tue Jun 21, 02:50 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller's long-term contract negotiations with the Broncos have gone cold over the past 10 to 12 days, according to's Jeremy Fowler. The two sides still have sizeable gap regarding guaranteed money. Fowler said Miller has supposedly explored holding out until March, at which point he would become a non-exclusive franchise player. Then, another team could offer a first-round pick and third-round pick for Miller.

Footballguys view: It's late June....and we'll be more optimistic about this situation than others. The two sides have until July 15th to make Miller the highest-paid defender in the NFL. Miller is entering his prime and the Broncos defense is the best in the long as Miller is pressuring QBs on the outside. The math here is simple; pay the man!

Buffalo Bills LB IK Enemkpali has worked with the first-team defense in offseason practice and he might push LB Manny Lawson for a starting job.

Footballguys view: Enemkpali is mainly known as the former Jets player who broke Geno Smith's jaw, but he may have a chance to rush the passer often for the Bills in 2016. During the team's recent minicamp, Enemkpali was getting by blockers with inside and outside pass-rush moves.

Footballguys view: Over the last two seasons, Ellerbe has only played in seven games. During 2015 (his first year with the Saints), Ellerbe was limited by hip and toe injuries. He was forced to take a paycut earlier this offseason, but he could make an impact for the Saints this year if healthy.

The Oakland Raiders have signed LB Shilique Calhoun, their third-round selection in the 2016 NFL draft, to a four-year contract.

Footballguys view: We love the upside that Calhoun has as a pass-rusher. Over the last three years at Michigan State, Calhoun had an outstanding 128 quarterback pressures and 26.5 sacks. He is expected to serve as a backup to LB Bruce Irvin as a rookie, but Calhoun has the ability to be an impact starter someday for the Raiders defense.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford (knee) is dealing with tendonitis in his knee, but he practiced Thursday, June 16, in a limited capacity.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to be careful here. Ford could be one of their primary pass-rushers in 2016. Linebacker Justin Houston is coming back from an ACL injury, and his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Tamba Hali is not quite the player he used to be and will likely play a more limited role this season. That means it's time for Ford to shine.

Chiefs | Dee Ford bothered by knee    Thu Jun 16, 10:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford (knee) exited practice with a sore knee Wednesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to be cautious here. They already have LB Justin Houston returning from a knee injury, but his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Tamba Hali is not quite the same player as he used to be, and he's been missing minicamp with his own knee injury. We should see Hali play a smaller role in 2016, so the Chiefs really need Ford to get healthy, stay healthy and make an impact as a pass-rusher.
