Broncos | Brandon Marshall making progress    Fri Jul 31, 07:37 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (foot) said his injured foot is around 90% at this point. Marshall has shown improvement since he worked with the rookies Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Marshall should be a tackling machine for the Broncos this year so long as he's healthy. He's starting as the team's "Sam" (strong-side inside) linebacker.

Redskins | Junior Galette joining roster    Fri Jul 31, 12:07 PM

Updating previous reports, free-agent LB Junior Galette (Saints) will sign a one-year contract with the Washington Redskins, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Washington lost Brian Orakpo in free agency, although injuries had kept Orakpo from having a huge impact lately. Galette is instantly the second-best edge rusher on the roster and should help the Washington pass defense. He signed a league minimum deal, which he can afford to after getting 20+ million guaranteed from the Saints last year.

Redskins | Junior Galette to visit 'Skins    Thu Jul 30, 01:10 AM

Free-agent LB Junior Galette (Saints) will visit the Washington Redskins Thursday, July 30. He will take a physical and meet with team officials.

Footballguys view: Released by the Saints last week, Galette could draw some interest from other teams even though he's had trouble off the field. Washington is looking for a pass-rusher to use opposite of Ryan Kerrigan, and coming off a 10-sack season Galette could be that guy.

Redskins | Ryan Kerrigan signs extension    Wed Jul 29, 01:29 PM

Washington Redskins LB Ryan Kerrigan signed a five-year contract extension Wednesday, July 29, worth $11.5 million per season, according to a source. The deal includes a $16 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Kerrigan has dominated during his time in the league. Set to play on his fifth-year option that would pay him roughly $7 million this season, Washington decided it was best to lock up a guy who hasn't missed a start since he came into the league back in 2011.

Bengals | Hope Vontaze Burfict can play in preseason    Wed Jul 29, 12:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict (knee) is currently on the Physically Unable to Perform list, but the team is hoping he can return to the field in time to play in the third preseason game so he can prepare for Week 1.

Footballguys view: That may be a bit optimistic as Burfict is trying to come back from microfracture surgery and neck problems. Burfict may not be ready at the start of the regular season, and he could end up on the PUP list at that time. That would force him to miss the first six weeks of the regular season.

Vikings | Anthony Barr to increase workload    Tue Jul 28, 12:45 PM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr (knee) will increase his workload Tuesday, July 28, as the team has its first practice in pads.

Footballguys view: Barr was in line to win the Defensive Rookie of the Year last season before this knee injury knocked him out of the lineup. The reports have been positive about Barr's recovery, and he should be ready by Week 1 of the regular season.

Raiders | Sio Moore close to being ready    Tue Jul 28, 08:25 AM

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders LB Sio Moore (hip) had major hip surgery in the offseason and won't need extensive time on the Physically Unable to Perform list before he's ready.

Footballguys view: This is what we thought was the case with Moore. Putting him on the PUP list to start the season insures the team can use the PUP designation on Moore to start the regular season if need be. If healthy, Moore can be activated at any time during training camp.

Raiders | Sio Moore placed on PUP    Mon Jul 27, 05:27 PM

Oakland Raiders LB Sio Moore (hip) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Moore had hip surgery earlier this offseason, and the plan was for him to be ready at the start of training camp. This move affords the Raiders the option of putting him on the PUP list to start the regular season if his recovery is slowed even more.

Saints | Junior Galette officially released    Mon Jul 27, 05:25 PM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette was officially released Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Galette was reportedly part of the chemistry problems the Saints had on defense last year. He led the team in sacks last year, but the off-field incidents proved to be the last straw. Galette suffered a severe pectoral injury at minicamp, and his status for Week 1 is unknown.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney placed on PUP    Mon Jul 27, 05:07 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: This should come as no surprise. Clowney is reportedly walking without a limp, but he's still recovering from the microfracture surgery on his knee that ended his rookie season. His status for Week 1 is unknown, but it's possible he could miss the first six weeks of the regular season on the PUP list too.

Broncos | Shane Ray ready for camp    Mon Jul 27, 02:29 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (foot) said his foot is 100% and he will be ready to fully participate in training camp.

Footballguys view: Ray has the potential to eventually be one of the best pass-rushers in the league. This season, Ray should work as a part-time player who can rotate in at linebacker to keep Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware fresh.

Vikings | Anthony Barr to work on conditioning    Mon Jul 27, 09:04 AM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr (knee) will be limited to start training camp as he needs to work on his conditioning after missing much of the spring. 'He feels much better,' head coach Mike Zimmer said. 'He's had a really good last two weeks. He's not in the best physical condition right now.'

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Vikings in the 2014 NFL draft, Barr had a strong rookie year (70 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries) before this knee injury cut his debut season short. The team will ease him into action as he comes back, and a Week 1 debut is not out of the question.

Vikings | Anthony Barr close to full health    Sat Jul 25, 01:58 PM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr (knee) said he's close to 100% health but may ease himself into training camp.

Footballguys view: Barr had a knee scope in December, and he missed some time earlier this offseason because of a knee injury. The Vikings are wise to ease Barr into action as training camp starts.

Saints | Junior Galette released    Fri Jul 24, 02:23 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette was released Friday, July 24, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Galette's off-field incidents proved to be too much for Sean Payton. He suffered a pectoral incident earlier this year in minicamp, and his status for Week 1 is in question. The Saints will turn to Anthony Spencer with Galette now bounced off the team.

Colts | Chuck Pagano believes in Robert Mathis    Thu Jul 23, 10:01 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Robert Mathis (Achilles') 'will make a huge impact' this season, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Footballguys view: The Colts need all the help on defense they can get. Their offense is jam-packed with superstars, but their poor offensive line and poor defense is a serious concern. They're most certainly a Super Bowl contender, and getting great play from Mathis would definitely help.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney looking good    Wed Jul 22, 05:03 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) looks spectacular, according to a team doctor. Clowney is seven months removed from microfracture surgery on his knee. It was previously reported that Clowney will probably be brought along slowly in training camp and could end up being ready for the regular season opener.

Footballguys view: He may look spectacular according to the team doctor, but that shouldn't change the team's approach with the second-year pass-rusher. We'll see if Clowney can start getting after the quarterback this season after his rookie season was a bust.

NFL | Dwight Freeney wants to play    Tue Jul 21, 09:11 PM

Free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Chargers) told Sirius XM NFL Radio Tuesday, July 21, he wants to play in 2015 but it has to be in the right situation defensively.

Footballguys view: Freeney is no longer the player he used to be, but we could see a team giving him a shot at some point in training camp. It would be best to use the veteran pass-rusher as a part-time player at this point in his career.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney to be brought back slowly     Mon Jul 20, 04:55 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) will not be rushed back in his recovery from microfracture surgery. Clowney is on schedule in his recovery and could play Week 1.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but his rookie season was a bust due to this injury. If he doesn't want his career to be a bust, then coming back from microfracture surgery is going to take some time. It's best that the Texans ease him back into action so they don't risk re-injuring their potential star pass-rusher.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney could start Week 1    Mon Jul 20, 04:50 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is continuing his rehabilitation process but could be healthy enough in time to play the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Even if Clowney starts in Week 1 against the Chiefs, we could see him playing more of a part-time role. Coming back from microfracture surgery, Clowney is going to be eased back into the lineup.

Broncos | Will have plan for Von Miller    Fri Jul 17, 03:26 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller is slated to become a free agent next season. His value will supposedly be in the range of $14 million. While it is a whole season away, vice president John Elway said the Broncos will have a plan to sign Miller.

Footballguys view: With Demaryius Thomas signed to a new long-term deal, the team can turn their attention to Miller. He should thrive in the Wade Phillips defense, and the Broncos may slap the franchise tag on him next offseason to give themselves more time to work out a deal that could be $100 million or more.

Chiefs | Justin Houston signs new deal    Wed Jul 15, 11:58 AM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston signed a six-year, $101 million deal that includes $52.5 million guaranteed Wednesday, July 15.

Footballguys view: This contract is the richest in Chiefs franchise history and the largest deal ever for a linebacker in NFL history. Houston is certainly worth it. Over the last 43 games, Houston has 43 sacks. Last year, he nearly broke the single-season record for sacks (half a sack short) with 22 sacks. He's one of the best pass-rushers in the game, and Houston is now locked up for the long term.

Broncos | Von Miller affecting Demaryius Thomas?    Tue Jul 14, 05:18 PM

Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas and the Broncos have not agreed on a long-term deal despite the deadline for doing so being Wednesday, July 15. The Broncos have already exchanged proposals with Thomas and his agent, but Thomas wants more money. One reason Denver may be hesitant to pay Thomas more is because LB Von Miller will become a free agent after this season. Miller is expected to cost at least $14 million per year, according to Mike Klis of 9news.com.

Footballguys view: The Broncos could always use the franchise tag on either Thomas or Miller next offseason. Miller is going to be able to shine perhaps brighter than ever under new defensive coorindator Wade Phillips. We wouldn't be shocked to see Miller snare 15-20 sacks in 2015. If he puts up those type of numbers, Miller is going to see a huge pay day for 2016 and beyond.

Redskins | Ryan Kerrigan doing well    Thu Jul 2, 01:29 PM

Washington Redskins LB Ryan Kerrigan (knee) said his rehab from knee surgery is going well and that he has been able to start running. Kerrigan said he is focused on building strength in the surgically repaired knee.

Footballguys view: Kerrigan has become the leader of the Washington pass rush, and with Brian Orakpo gone to Tennessee, he'll be even more important for them this year. He's an LB2 in sack-heavy/big play IDP leagues with enough activity to be relevant in deeper balanced leagues too.

Bengals | Vontaze Burfict is a question mark    Wed Jun 24, 08:57 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict (knee) is working his way back from microfracture surgery on his knee and is viewed as a question mark heading into training camp.

Footballguys view: Burfict exploded in 2013, but injuries took him out of 2014.The knee is a concern and starting off training camp on the PUP list would be concerning. If he's healthy, he should be a fantasy stud, but there seems to be real doubt as to whether he will be healthy.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney ahead of schedule    Sat Jun 20, 09:04 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is progressing so well from microfracture surgery that the new goal is to have him on the field for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he didn't make much of an impact last year as a rookie. Inactive for most of the season, Clowney only appeared in four games and made a total of seven tackles for the year. Reports have been positive about his recovery, but we won't know how the cartilage in his knee regenerates until he gets back to the football field in a full role. He may be ready for the start of training camp, but the Texans will ease him into action.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall will run soon    Wed Jun 17, 05:50 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (foot) will begin running next week. Marshall had surgery on his injured foot in March.

Footballguys view: Marshall is a key part of the new Broncos defense. As the strong-side inside linebacker (SAM) in Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense, Marshall should get plenty of tackles. Watch his progress in training camp.

Saints | Junior Galette avoids surgery    Tue Jun 16, 08:32 AM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) won't require surgery on his pectoral injury after meeting with Dr. James Andrews.

Footballguys view: The Saints need Galette on the field to boost their pass rush. The injury should require rest and rehab. We'll know more when this team gets closer to training camp.

Raiders | Sio Moore does some work    Sun Jun 14, 10:17 AM

Oakland Raiders LB Sio Moore (hip) was able to participate in some team drills during the minicamp this week, and the team hopes he will be able to full participate when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: According to this report, the team was happy with Moore's progress in team drills. This hip injury will just take time to get over, and the Raiders will bring him along cautiously.

Falcons | Vic Beasley signs deal    Fri Jun 12, 04:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Vic Beasley signed a four-year deal worth $14.5 million with the team Friday, June 12. The deal includes an $8.8 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Beasley was one of the best pass-rushers in the 2015 NFL draft. He's quick off the ball and has the ability to bend and burst around the edge. Beasley has a good bag of tricks as a pass-rusher, including a deadly spin move that can get him by blockers quickly and cleanly. The Falcons were looking to upgrade their defense, and Beasley will certainly help that.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney will be limited    Fri Jun 12, 11:37 AM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) should be ready for Week 1, but the team isn't planning to give him a full load of snaps right away, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: That's a smart move for the Texans. Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he only appeared in four games last year and failed to register a sack. If healthy, Clowney could be a very disruptive pass-rusher. We'll see if he can get healthy enough to be effective (and dangerous) in 2015.

Broncos | Shane Ray dealing with injury    Thu Jun 11, 02:41 PM

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray (quadriceps) has missed some snaps during workouts because of a strained quadriceps. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said the minicamp will be important for Ray to receive more reps.

Footballguys view: The Broncos would like Ray to come along more quickly to compete as a part-time pass-rusher behind Von Miller and Demarcus Ware, but it's not mission-critical. Ray should be able to give either Miller or Ware a breather, and he plays like every snap is his last. Ray should be a nice pass-rusher as a rookie for the Broncos when he's finally healthy.

Panthers | Shaq Thompson returns to practice    Thu Jun 11, 02:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring) participated in practice Thursday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Thompson's debut was delayed by the hamstring as well as the end of Washington's school year. With Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis this could be a dangerous group of linebackers. We love that Thompson can play a Kam Chancellor-like role for the Panthers defense.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney should be ready for Week 1    Thu Jun 11, 01:40 PM

Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The Texans can't afford the 2014 first-overall draft pick to miss another year after he missed his rookie season. With questions about work-ethic and drive still on some people's minds, Clowney has much to prove in order to avoid being labeled a "bust" in his second season.

Lions | Kyle Van Noy not completely healthy    Sun Jun 7, 09:50 AM

Detroit Lions LB Kyle Van Noy (hernia) said he is not 100% at this point but is able to fully participate in organized team activities. He has been working with the first-team defense at strongside and weakside linebacker.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in 2014, Van Noy's rookie season was hampered by this hernia, and he missed the first eight games of the season because of it. For a player who never missed a game in college at BYU, it had to be frustrating. He's getting a fresh start this season, and he wants to carve out a role as an impact player. Van Noy constantly made plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage (63 tackles for a loss, 26 sacks) in college, and the Lions are hopeful he can play like that this season.

Saints | Junior Galette seeking another opinion    Fri Jun 5, 12:30 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) is likely to have a decision on surgery in the next week or so. Doctors are split on whether he should have surgery, and he's seeking another opinion.

Footballguys view: The reports out of New Orleans seem to indicate we could be a "week or so" away from a decision. If he needs surgery, Galette will miss a significant amount of the season.

Colts | Robert Mathis' timetable shifts    Fri Jun 5, 10:25 AM

Indianapolis Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') has shifted his timetable from being ready for training camp in August to preparing to be ready by the season opener in September.

Footballguys view: The Colts are moving things back here. Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be, but for an older player like Mathis any extra recovery time is a good thing. If he suffers any setback during recovery, then starting the season on the PUP list could be an option.

Saints | Junior Galette could be out a while    Thu Jun 4, 06:59 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) recently suffered an injury to his pectoral and is supposedly considering surgery, according to sources. The cause and extent of Galette's injury is unknown at this time.

Footballguys view: Any sort of surgery on the pectoral muscle could cost Galette six months for recovery. It would be a crushing blow for the Saints defense as Galette led the team with 10 sacks in 2014. Starting the season on the PUP list (forcing him to miss the first six weeks) may be the plan for Galette.

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray signed a contract with the team Monday, June 1. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Broncos moved up in the first round for the first time under the guidance of general manager John Elway. Ray is a talented pass-rusher who plays like every snap is his last. He's an alpha male with a chip on his shoulder, and he should be able to generate a lot of pressure as a part-time player behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.

Colts | Robert Mathis to be ready for training camp?    Mon Jun 1, 03:20 PM

Broncos | Shane Ray practicing    Mon Jun 1, 01:55 PM

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray (foot) is participating in drills during organized team activities Monday, June 1.

Footballguys view: Ray plays with a mean streak, and he has great snap anticipation and first-step quickness. He has good closing burst to the quarterback, and he should be a great reserve player for the Broncos this year behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.
