Bengals | Vontaze Burfict agrees to extension    Wed Aug 20, 05:24 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict agreed to a multi-year contract extension Wednesday, Aug. 20. Terms of the new deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Burfict had maybe the worst pre-draft season in the last 10 years, only to end up being one of the very best players in his draft class. Many analysts were pronouncing him DOA in the NFL after his fall from the heights of draft projections in the first round, but Burfict has turned the experience into a massive positive.

Steelers | Ryan Shazier active in preseason game    Mon Aug 18, 09:43 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Ryan Shazier had 11 tackles and an interception in less than two quarters of playing time in the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 17.

Footballguys view: The talk of Steelers camp has been Shazier. He can fly across the football field, and he arrives at the play with natural violence. The Steelers have missed on some defensive picks in recent years, but Shazier looks like a stud.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Brandon Magee (ankle), DE William Gholston (shoulder), CB Rashaan Melvin (ankle), RB Mike James (shoulder) and SS Major Wright (back) left the team's preseason game with injuries Saturday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: Charles Sims is out for 12-14 weeks, so the Bucs embarrassment of riches at backup running back could turn into embarrassingly little depth in a very short time. Bobby Rainey is becoming a more important player by the day, although this could end up being minor for James when the dust settles.

Jaguars | Cecil Shorts, Dekoda Watson to see reps in next game    Fri Aug 15, 02:02 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) and LB Dekoda Watson (groin) are expected to practice on a limited basis Sunday, Aug. 17, and they should both see some repetitions in the preseason game against the Detroit Lions next Friday. Watson will be activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list sometime before Sunday.

Footballguys view: It's the dress rehearsal for the regular season aka Week 3 of the preseason. Getting Shorts back is a real boost for this offense. He's going off the board at WR48 (10.11) in 12-team PPR leagues. If he's healthy and looks good next week, that ADP could rise a bit.

Broncos | Von Miller says his knee is responding well    Fri Aug 15, 01:42 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller (knee) said his knee is responding well, although he is not sure if he will play in the team's third preseason game.

Footballguys view: Miller is an upside play as an LB2/LB3 in sack-heavy leagues. It might take him a few games to regain his form, but he is a perfect situation for a sack artist - on a team that intends to build big leads by going up and down the field in an uptempo, efficient passing game.

Jaguars | Eight don't travel with team    Thu Aug 14, 06:11 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Paul Posluszny (biceps), WRs Cecil Shorts (hamstring), Allen Robinson (hamstring), Tandon Doss (ankle), Lamaar Thomas (head), CB Deion Belue (back), LB Dekoda Watson (groin) and TE Clay Harbor (calf) did not travel with the team to Chicago and will not play in tonight's preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars are already one injury away from a *M*A*S*H* episode, so they won't take chances. A week of rest is helpful for any of these guys and if they miss a week, the Jags can save money on plane tickets--after all they have to pay off those pools in the stadium.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall primed to replace Danny Trevathan    Thu Aug 14, 01:10 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall is very confident that he can fill in for LB Danny Trevathan (knee) at the weakside linebacker spot. Marshall is expected to line up with the starters on defense in practice Thursday, Aug. 14. He'll be first in line to replace Trevathan, with LBs Lamin Barrow and Corey Nelson next in line. Marshall was promoted to the active roster last year when LB Von Miller went down with an injury. When the Broncos have lined up the second-team nickel package, it's been Barrow and Marshall at the two linebacker spots.

Footballguys view: TJ Ward is still the Denver IDP who stands to gain the most from the Trevathan injury. Marshall is only worth picking up in the deepest of IDP leagues, but it could get a good rise out of your leagues when they see Brandon Marshall was added on the waiver wire.

Cardinals | John Abraham arriving today    Thu Aug 14, 10:05 AM

Arizona Cardinals OLB John Abraham is expected to report to training camp Thursday, Aug. 14. Abraham has been absent from training camp for an undisclosed reason.

Footballguys view: Abraham is a key piece of the Cardinals defense as their best edge rusher by a good margin. With the two starting inside linebackers from 2013 gone, the Cardinals need Abraham to come up big. He had an DUI in the offseason, so his absence is a bit ominous.

Broncos | Danny Trevathan will need to stay off knee for a while    Wed Aug 13, 02:13 PM

Denver Broncos LB Danny Trevathan (knee) should initially keep weight off his left leg to make sure the crack in his knee does not become larger or create other problems in the knee, according to ESPN injury expert Stephania Bell. Trevathan may be able to put weight on the knee gradually depending on how the recovery goes. Once he is able to move the knee, he can work in a pool or on a treadmill that controls the amount of weight on his knee so he can work on his conditioning. The team believes he will be able to play after their Week 4 bye.

Footballguys view: Our very own Dr. Jene Bramel says that Trevathan's 6-8 week recovery time might be a bit optimistic. The Broncos defense won't be the same in coverage without Trevathan for at least the first month of the season. Brandon Marshall and rookie Lamin Barrow will compete to take over at weak-side linebacker.

Chargers | Dwight Freeney ready to rebound    Tue Aug 12, 10:27 PM

San Diego Chargers LB Dwight Freeney (quadriceps) said he has a lot to prove after missing most of last season with a torn quadriceps. 'I want to prove that a guy in his 13th year can still ball, can still go out there and play at a high level, and be one of the best out there, still, and have no decline in his abilities, and be able to lead a team,' Freeney said.

Broncos | ACL, MCL fine for Danny Trevathan    Tue Aug 12, 07:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Danny Trevathan (knee) said Tuesday, Aug. 12, that his left knee does not have a torn anterior cruciate ligament or medial collateral ligament, but he confirmed an MRI showed he has a left medial tibial impaction fracture which will keep him out six to eight weeks. 'The doctor told me I was going to be out four to eight weeks, but I told him four to six. I'm not tripping. I will bounce back. I'm a soldier,' Trevathan said.

Footballguys view: That's good news for Trevathan, but it's not going to shorten his recovery time. He's out until at least Week 5 of the regular season. The Broncos will turn to guys like Brandon Marshall or Lamin Barrow at weak-side linebacker.

Broncos | Danny Trevathan injury    Tue Aug 12, 04:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Danny Trevathan (knee) suffered a left medial tibial impaction fracture in practice Tuesday, Aug. 12, and is expected to miss six to eight weeks.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have a bye in Week 4. We could see Trevathan return after that for their Week 5 game against the Arizona Cardinals. In the meantime, linebacker Brandon Marshall and rookie Lamin Barrow will compete for the weak-side linebacker job in Denver.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall gets first-team reps    Tue Aug 12, 02:32 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall filled in with the first-team defense in practice Tuesday, Aug. 12, after LB Danny Trevathan (knee) suffered a knee injury. Marshall would be the most likely candidate to fill in if Trevathan missed any time.

Footballguys view: Marshall is an aggressive player with a nose for the ball. He arrives at the ball with natural violence, but he's not as good in coverage as Trevathan is.
