Panthers | More on Jonathan Stewart    Thu Jul 24, 03:22 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is expected to miss one-to-two weeks as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Stewart will not be placed on the team's Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Talent has never been a question with Stewart. However, staying healthy has been a big problem for the veteran back. In the meantime, we'll see the Panthers lean on DeAngelo Williams in camp. Stewart's absence will give a bigger opportunity to guys like Kenjon Barner and rookie Tyler Gaffney.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart dealing with hamstring issue    Thu Jul 24, 12:50 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury, but the team will leave him on the active roster heading into training camp.

Footballguys view: That Stewart is not being placed on the PUP or NFI list is somewhat positive because it means the Panthers don't expect to be without him for too long, but the fact that this happened over a week ago and Stewart is projected to be out for another week or two according to some sources means that this is a 2-4 week injury. We would be concerned about any player with a non-trivial hamstring injury at this time of year. When it's Stewart, his seemingly discount price of a pick in the 13th round or later is looking less attractive. Don't overreact and go after DeAngelo Williams on this news, either, he was little help to fantasy teams despite Stewart missing much of 2013.

Panthers | Cam Newton cleared    Thu Jul 24, 12:35 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was cleared for practice, according to general manager David Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Newton's offseason ankle surgery was never seen a real threat to his fantasy value this year, so this positive news should not affect his fantasy stock.

Panthers | Greg Olsen tired of WR criticism    Thu Jul 24, 01:33 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen said he is tired of hearing criticism about Carolina's new receiving corps, which is largely made up of journeymen and unproven commodities. Olsen added that the Panthers' offensive identity is not going to change, so controlling the clock through a balanced offense remains important.

Panthers | Jason Avant to be No. 3 WR    Sat Jul 19, 10:47 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant likely will serve as the No. 3 wide receiver this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Avant has the experience edge over guys like Tavarres King and Marvin McNutt. The Panthers are unlikely to have a robust passing game this year, so Avant won't have much fantasy value this year.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery expected to start    Sat Jul 19, 10:46 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery is expected to be one of the starting wide receivers this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Cotchery is a savvy veteran who can sharply run routes and get open. We're not expecting the Panthers passing game to be that productive, so Cotchery's fantasy value is low. Take a look at him as a reserve receiver (end of the bench) or waiver-wire option in deep PPR leagues. His current ADP is WR65 (14.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton limited during workout    Sat Jul 19, 10:37 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was limited in his mobility when he worked out with some of his wide receivers last week.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Newton is going to be somewhat limited leading up to the start of the regular season. We like that he went out and put in some extra time with what is largely a brand new WR corps.

Panthers | Kenjon Barner a top choice as returner    Sat Jul 19, 09:21 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner is the leading candidate for the kick return job entering training camp.

Footballguys view: Barner has the speed, agility and quickness to be a standout player as a return man. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should be monitoring his progress as a running back in training camp and the preseason.

Panthers | Cam Newton works out with receivers    Fri Jul 18, 10:39 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton held a three-day throwing session with WR Kelvin Benjamin, QBs Joe Webb and Matt Blanchard, one tight end and nine other receivers this week.

Footballguys view: It's good for Newton to establish chemistry with a whole new group of receivers. The Panthers passing game is not going to give us many fireworks this year in fantasy, but look to a guy like Benjamin later in your draft. He's big and can leap out of the building. This could make him a prime red-zone target this year. Benjamin is lumbering off the line of scrimmage and not as physical as a player his size should be. His current ADP is WR48 (10.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Greg Hardy punishment could wait    Thu Jul 17, 12:15 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy could avoid immediate punishment from the NFL after being found guilty on charges of communicating threats and assaulting a female because he filed for a second trial in Superior Court in front of a jury. The NFL could choose to suspend Hardy for as many as four games based on recent disciplinary actions. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the NFL would review Hardy's legal situation at the 'appropriate time.'

Footballguys view: We expect the NFL to eventually take a strong stance here. The league usually doesn't punish first-time offenders until their legal cases have run their course. However, the Panthers could take action against Hardy before the NFL's decision.

Panthers | Could cut Greg Hardy    Thu Jul 17, 09:10 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy could be cut by the team because, according to former DE Mike Rucker, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is sensitive to the topic of domestic violence.

Footballguys view: Hardy is playing on a one-year franchise tag in 2014. The guilty verdict could at least keep the team from looking to re-sign him to a long-term deal. There's a strong chance the league suspends Hardy when the legal process has been exhausted.

Panthers | Greg Hardy found guilty    Tue Jul 15, 11:02 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy was found guilty Tuesday, July 15, of assaulting of assaulting a female and communicating threats. Mecklenburg County Judge Rebecca Thorn-Tin sentenced Hardy to 18 months' probation. A 60-day jail sentence was suspended. Hardy's attorney Chris Fialko said he'll appeal and Hardy has asked for a jury trial in superior court.

Footballguys view: The appeal will likely delay any suspension coming from the NFL. Cases like this can be pushed back quite some time, so the league is going to have to wait before they suspend Hardy.

Panthers | Greg Hardy pleads not guilty     Tue Jul 15, 02:28 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy appeared in court Tuesday, July 15, on charges of communicating threats and assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

Footballguys view: Hardy's ex-girlfriend testified in court Tuesday, July 15, that Hardy strangled her and threatened to kill her. Some believe the NFL has a problem with domestic violence and the league will take appropriate action (suspension, fines) when the legal process has exhausted for Hardy.

Panthers | Long-term deal unlikely for Greg Hardy    Mon Jul 14, 06:14 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy is unlikely to reach a long-term deal with the team before the deadline Tuesday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is what happens when you get in trouble with the law with a contract on the line. Hardy had character concerns when he came out of college, and that's why he fell to the sixth round. He's set to go to trial Tuesday for two misdemeanor assault charges after he allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend earlier this offseason.

Panthers | Not concerned with perception of wide receiver group    Fri Jul 11, 01:31 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery said the wide receivers on the team are not concerned with what the perception is of that group. They are all about working hard and competing.

Footballguys view: It's good that they don't concern themselves with what is being said in the media because it's not good. Carolina has arguably the worst group of wide receivers in the league. They'll be relying heavily on Cotchery and rookie Kelvin Benjamin in 2014.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery will workout with Cam Newton    Fri Jul 11, 01:21 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery said he will participate in a throwing session with QB Cam Newton next week to help get on the same page before the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Cotchery is a seasoned veteran, and he knows the Panthers need to build chemistry between Newton and the entirely new group of wideouts. We'll see Cotchery compete for a starting job (and likely win) opposite rookie Kelvin Benjamin.

Panthers | Cam Newton will work with wide receivers    Thu Jul 10, 02:22 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will work with his wide receivers before training camp gets underway to try to get on the same page after missing time due to an ankle issue. 'It's been more difficult because Cam's coming off an ankle injury and he had to get surgery, so we couldn't throw with him as much as we would like,' Panthers receiver Tiquan Underwood said.

Footballguys view: The more he can get together with these guys the better. He was working with rookie Kelvin Benjamin already, so bringing in the other guys is even better. Newton is an easy QB1 for any format, though the lack of receivers makes it tough to see him as challenging the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Andrew Luck or Peyton Manning.

Panthers | Tyler Gaffney making good first impression    Tue Jul 8, 09:26 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Tyler Gaffney has earned praise from the coaching staff for his ability in blitz pickup and familiarity with the team's power running scheme, according to Max Henson of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: The Panthers long-term running back situation is wide open with the team just biding their team before they can get out from under foolishly expensive contracts for DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. Gaffney surprised with a fast 40 time, and his blitz pickup ability could get him on the field in his rookie year if Stewart or Williams miss time.

Panthers | Cam Newton gets praise from teammate    Thu Jul 3, 01:26 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen praised QB Cam Newton. "I don't know if there is another QB in the league that does what he does...he has really grown," Newton said.

Footballguys view: Newton has been working out not only with new teammate Kelvin Benjamin but Green Bay Packers receiver Randall Cobb and Baltimore Ravens receiver Torrey Smith. Clearly he's willing to do whatever it takes to improve and, maybe, do a little recruiting of two guys whose contracts will come up soon. We have Newton as a pretty solid QB1, though we'd feel better if Smith and Cobb were actually his receivers.

Panthers | Thomas Davis would retire before leaving    Sat Jun 28, 08:47 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis said he would retire before playing for another organization. 'If I'm going to play football and represent an organization, it's going to be with the team that stuck beside me and never gave up on me,' Davis said. 'My mindset right now is, I'm going to play for the Carolina Panthers or I'm done playing football.' Davis has spent all 10 years of his NFL career with the Panthers and has torn the ACL in his right knee three times.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have been faithful to Davis multiple times after major injuries. We can understand his connection to the Panthers and why he wouldn't want to leave.

Panthers | Amini Silatolu nears full strength    Wed Jun 25, 05:19 PM

Carolina Panthers OG Amini Silatolu (knee) is nearing full strength as he recovers from knee surgery. "It feels good, probably 98 percent," he said. "I've still got to work on some stuff during this little break."

Footballguys view: Silatolu was a second-round pick in 2012, and his health and quality of play are important to a team that is looking to rivitalize an offensive line that lost some key members. He's a power player who should help the running game if he is hitting his stride in his third year.

Panthers | Jason Avant clashed with Chip Kelly    Wed Jun 25, 12:27 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant said he did not approve of his standing with head coach Chip Kelly last season with the Philadelphia Eagles. Avant said he 'mostly ran clear-out routes. ... When it came to certain things, we butted heads sometimes -- route running and route technique. So I knew I didn't fit his system.'

Footballguys view: Avant was a leftover from the previous regime, so it's not a shock that his declining usage was a sign of a bad fit. He'll be a slot receiver and maybe the most reliable hands receiver on the Panthers this year, but that is probably not enough to make him relevant except in the very deepest of fantasy leagues.

Panthers | Team has confidence in its guard tandem    Tue Jun 24, 09:12 PM

Carolina Panthers OG Amini Silatolu and OG Trai Turner have earned praise from teammates and management this spring. 'They're competing, and there's a lot of youth there,' general manager Dave Gettleman. 'We like what's going on.'

Footballguys view: The Panthers need quality play from their interior line because they're going to be a run-heavy offense in 2014. We'll see if the Panthers can have a better passing game than most people think. They have a poor group of wide receivers, so expect them to lean on DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart.

Panthers | Trial date set for Greg Hardy    Tue Jun 24, 01:19 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy is scheduled to go to trial for two misdemeanor charges on July 15, 2014. Hardy is scheduled to face charges he allegedly assaulted and threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend.

Footballguys view: "The Kraken" is one of the best pass-rushers on the Carolina defense. We'll see if the league steps in with a suspension before the legal process has been exhausted.

Panthers | Jason Avant helping the receiving corps    Mon Jun 23, 10:01 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant has earned praise form head coach Ron Rivera for the leadership he has shown to WR Kelvin Benjamin and the team's other receivers. 'Jason does things exactly the way you want them - he's a pro,' Rivera said. 'In all honesty, the thought was that if you could have a couple of veteran guys who have been there and done that around a Kelvin Benjamin, that could be very good for him. And Jason has not just been good for Benjamin, he's been good for a whole lot of guys.'

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all the help they can get. The team has arguably the worst group of receivers in the NFL. Avant is one of the most senior members of the group, and he may earn a starting or slot role with the team this year. Benjamin and one of Tavarres King, Marvin McNutt, Jerricho Cotchery and Avant will battle for the rest of the spots in the starting lineup.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart looks good     Sat Jun 21, 09:59 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart showed great burst every time he touched the ball during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Stewart spent most of 2013 sidelined due to ankle and knee woes, appearing in just six contests to post 48/180/0 rushing and 7/44/0 receiving for the regular season. We'll see him split time with DeAngelo Williams in 2014.

Panthers | Kelvin Bemjamin looking to work with QB    Sat Jun 21, 09:48 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin said he plans to stay in Charlotte during his off time so he can work with QB Cam Newton.

Footballguys view: Newton will be rehabbing from ankle surgery, but he should be able to lob some passes in Benjamin's direction. The rookie first-round pick is likely to be the top target on a run-heavy offense. Benjamin is huge, but he plays too much like Brian Quick (Rams). He's big but not overly physical. Benjamin is also lumbering off the line of scrimmage when the ball is snapped. We'll see if he can work to improve his game as a pro.

Panthers | Cam Newton will rehab ankle during off time    Sat Jun 21, 09:36 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will spend most of his off time during the next four weeks in Charlotte so he can continue the rehab for his surgically repaired ankle.

Panthers | A.J. Klein impressing coach    Fri Jun 20, 10:13 PM

Carolina Panthers LB A.J. Klein has impressed linebackers coach Al Holcomb with his play this spring. 'He is definitely more confident,' Holcomb said. 'When he is out there taking reps at middle linebacker, he is taking command. It's all about competition. I consider A.J. a starter. He's done a good job and he's going to continue to earn the right to get playing time for us this season.' Klein has been serving as LB Luke Kuechly's backup and is competing with LB Chase Blackburn for the starting weakside linebacker spot.

Footballguys view: Klein has a nose for the ball, and he arrives at the play with natural violence. We'll see if he can keep impressing in training camp and win a starting job.

Panthers | Excited about Kelvin Benjamin    Fri Jun 20, 04:39 PM

The Carolina Panthers are excited about what they have seen out of WR Kelvin Benjamin during organized team activities this summer. 'That's part of why you bring the young man in,' head coach Ron Rivera said. 'You draft him for a specific skill set. He can become a threat in the red zone and a threat for you on third down and have an immediate impact doing those things for us. It was good to see him do those things and good to see him work with Cam (Newton) as well. I'm excited as to where he's heading and what he can become for us.'

Footballguys view: We'd be more excited about Benjamin if he showed the ability to use his large frame correctly in college. He has a large wingspan, but Benjamin doesn't fight for the ball enough. We'll see if that can change in the pros. Fantasy owners are pretty cool on the rookie, even though he could have a larger workload as the top WR in Carolina. Benjamin's current ADP is WR46 (10.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.
