Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) said his injured foot is completely healed and that his focus this offseason is securing a contract extension before the regular season begins.

Free-agent QB Taylor Heinicke (Texans) was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers Monday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Heinicke has bounced around to a couple of teams so far as a pro. He'll be competing for a backup spot behind starter Cam Newton. Heinicke has good accuracy on short and intermediate routes but has no guarantee of making the 53-man roster.

Panthers | Calvin Ridley to visit Panthers    Tue Apr 10, 11:51 AM

Alabama WR Calvin Ridley will visit the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, April 11.

Footballguys view: It's not a great WR class but Ridley is seen as a first-round pick as he may be the best of the bunch. Ridley ran the full route tree in college and knows the nuances of getting open. He struggled with drops during his college career (20 drops in three seasons) and can get disrupted by physical corners at the line of scrimmage. The Panthers are continuing to look for improved weapons around QB Cam Newton.

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis said he has been suspended four games for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Footballguys view: The Panthers won't be the same without Davis on the field for the first month of the season. However, he was going to take on a smaller role in 2018. While he's out, Shaq Thompson will be asked to do more for the Panthers defense.

Panthers | Hayden Hurst visiting Panthers    Fri Apr 6, 08:16 AM

South Carolina TE Hayden Hurst is visiting the Carolina Panthers Friday, April 6.

Footballguys view: Hurst is one of the most interesting prospects at the tight end position in this draft. He spent 2.5 years in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and thus has little experience playing football. While in college at South Carolina, Hurst showed off the ability to burst out of his breaks and provide his quarterback with a quality target. Hurst is raw, but the upside is there for him to be a second- or third-round pick.

Free-agent WR Jarius Wright (Vikings) is expected to sign with the Carolina Panthers, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wright is lightning quick and can change direction without losing much speed. He's a reserve receiver for the Panthers now but has the ability to be a playmaker with a larger role in 2018. Even with an expanded role with his new team, Wright is nothing more than a dynasty flier for fantasy owners.

Free-agent DE Julius Peppers (Panthers) plans to re-sign to a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: It's been an amazing career for Peppers and he's not really showing many signs of age. The former first-round pick (2002) has only missed a couple of games during his pro career. He played almost 500 snaps last year and racked up 11.0 sacks. Recovering from shoulder surgery, Peppers is likely to be limited during OTAs and minicamp. He'll be ready Week 1 for his role as a pass-rusher.

The Carolina Panthers need to add a 'physical presence' at running back to pair with RB Christian McCaffrey, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart released    Wed Feb 28, 11:31 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart was released Wednesday, Feb. 28.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have Christian McCaffrey as their top back, but they are likely to add help at the position. They need a grinder to go with the big-play ability that McCaffrey brings to the table as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Now on the open market, Stewart should get some interest from teams in need of veteran depth.

Panthers | CAR still thrilled about Christian McCaffrey    Tue Feb 27, 01:14 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey's 'versatility is invaluable' and 'his quickness is elite,' according to general manager Marty Hurney.

Footballguys view: We hope that new offensive coordinator shares Hurney's opinion. The team seems to be stuck in the past offensively and hasn't schemed to more of a spread offense that could unlock his and Cam Newton's top-end abilities and physical talents.

Panthers | Devin Funchess has high ceiling    Tue Feb 27, 01:06 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has 'just scratched the surface (of how good he can be),' according to general manager Marty Hurney, who believes the midseason move of Funchess to the 'X' receiver 'really fits his skill set the best.'

Footballguys view: Funchess isn't even 24 yet, and he emerged as a #1 option for Cam Newton after the team traded Kelvin Benjamin. He wasn't healthy late in the season and could be a value pick if fantasy drafters are focused on last year's numbers instead of this year's potential.
