Panthers | Jonathan Stewart out of practice    Wed Sep 28, 12:36 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is out of practice Wednesday, Sept. 28.

Footballguys view: Cameron Artis-Payne should start for the Panthers again this week. The rookie is worth considering as a RB3/flex play in Week 4 against the Falcons.

Panthers | Vernon Butler has high ankle sprain    Tue Sep 27, 11:59 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Vernon Butler (ankle) is expected to miss a few weeks after sustaining a high ankle sprain against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

Footballguys view: The rookie first-round pick has not been on the field that much this year for the Panthers as he's just a rotational player at this point in his career.

Panthers | Kyle Love re-signed    Tue Sep 27, 01:18 PM

Free-agent DT Kyle Love (Panthers) was re-signed by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, Sept. 27. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: An easy move back to a familiar face for the Panthers here. With Vernon Butler (ankle) banged up, the team moves forward with Love giving them valuable veteran depth. Love was one of their final cuts earlier this year.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin to be more involved?    Mon Sep 26, 06:18 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin could be more involved going forward after not catching a pass in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings. He was only targeted once. 'We've got to find a way to get him the ball more. That starts with me,' offensive coordinator Mike Shula said. 'But we've got to make sure we're doing it in a way that we're not just trying to force him the ball.

Footballguys view: Benjamin is the best WR on the team, and he's clearly a favorite target of Cam Newton. The Vikings have a tough defense, but it was unusual to see him blanked on Sunday. Expect that to change going forward, and Benjamin should perform like a high-end WR2 in most matchups.

Panthers | Cam Newton twists ankle    Mon Sep 26, 08:48 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) twisted his ankle in Week 3, but he's in the facility Monday, Sept. 26, and feels fine.

Footballguys view: Newton has been taking a beating this year, and the Panthers need to do a better job of protecting their star QB. He's a big, physical player himself but the human body is only designed to take so much punishment. The Panthers dropped the game against the Vikings, but should have an easier time with the Falcons in Week 4.

Panthers | Greg Olsen has decent outing    Sun Sep 25, 04:51 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen caught six passes for 64 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3.

Footballguys view: Olsen is a mainstay in the offense who is as reliable as any tight end in fantasy football so far this year. He'll be a strong TE1 start at Atlanta next week.

Panthers | Cam Newton throws three INTs    Sun Sep 25, 04:50 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton went 21-for-35 for 262 yards and three interceptions against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 3. He also rushed for 26 yards and one touchdown on seven carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Newton was thwarted by a Vikings defense that has to be considered among the elite at this point. Newton has a much more favorable matchup at Atlanta next week. This will probably be his low watermark on the season.

The Carolina Panthers have declared WR Brenton Bersin, WR Damiere Byrd, SS Jeremy Cash, RB Jonathan Stewart, DL Ryan Delaire, CB Teddy Williams, OG Tyler Larsen inactive for Week 3.

Footballguys view: The Panthers will employ a three-back committee with Cameron Artis-Payne, Mike Tolbert, and Fozzy Whittaker to replace Stewart, so there's no obvious play in his place.

Panthers | Marcus Ball signed to active roster    Sun Sep 25, 12:42 AM

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart ruled out for Week 3    Fri Sep 23, 01:54 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) has been ruled out for Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings. Head coach Ron Rivera said he expects Stewart to miss two to three weeks.

Footballguys view: The Panthers will employ a three-RB committee of Cameron Artis-Payne, Fozzy Whittaker, and Mike Tolbert, making none of them worth consideration except in the deepest of leagues.

Panthers | Thursday practice report for Carolina    Fri Sep 23, 12:55 AM

Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne to be feature back    Wed Sep 21, 10:03 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne is expected to serve as the feature back in Week 3 against the Minnesota Vikings. 'All he's ever needed was the opportunity,' head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday, Sept. 21. 'We didn't have (RB Jonathan Stewart) at the end of the season, so he got his opportunity and performed well and did some really good things. And then this preseason, I thought he had a really good preseason.'

Footballguys view: Artis-Payne has not been active yet this year. Fozzy Whittaker led the team in rushing last week after filling in for an injured Stewart. This week, Artis-Payne and Whittaker will split time in the Panthers backfield.

Panthers | CAR to use RB committee    Wed Sep 21, 10:32 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker, RB Cameron Artis-Payne and FB Mike Tolbert will split carries by committee with RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) out, according to offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

Footballguys view: This is a situation most fantasy owners should avoid. However, if you were hit hard by RB injuries (too many to list) then perhaps you could throw a dart for last week's leading rusher Fozzy Whittaker.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker the main back    Tue Sep 20, 04:41 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker was in on 49 offensive snaps in Week 2 in light of RB Jonathan Stewart's (hamstring) early exit. RB Cameron Artis-Payne did not receive any snaps.

Footballguys view: That was last week when Artis-Payne was inactive. This week it may be different. Artis-Payne has been inactive in the first two games of the year, but he could see the field with Stewart down. No Panthers RB is worth taking much of a flier on really. Whittaker and Artis-Payne could split carries, then add in fullback Mike Tolbert's red-zone and goal-line opportunities, then account for QB Cam Newton's rushing prowess and you can see how not much could be there.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart undergoes MRI    Mon Sep 19, 10:04 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) was scheduled for an MRI Monday, Sept. 19, to determine the severity of the hamstring injury he suffered in Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: We'll know more about this injury, but expect the Panthers to be as careful as possible with their oft-injured starter. If Stewart misses time, the team will utilize a three-headed RBBC with Cameron Artis-Payne, Fozzy Whittaker and fullback Mike Tolbert.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart likely out for Week 3    Mon Sep 19, 01:23 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is expected to miss 'at least a week or two' after suffering a hamstring injury in a Week 2 victory over the San Francisco 49ers, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The Panthers should move forward with a three-headed RBBC featuring Cameron Artis-Payne, Fozzy Whittaker and fullback Mike Tolbert. Throw in QB Cam Newton's rushing ability and you can see how the fantasy value is limited for any of those backs.

Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne could see big role    Mon Sep 19, 09:10 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne has been a healthy scratch due to special teams, but if RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) misses time, Artis-Payne could see a big role on offense, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: If Stewart is out, the Panthers should use a RBBC which features Artis-Payne, Sunday's 100-yard rusher Fozzy Whittaker and fullback Mike Tolbert. Add in the rushing ability of QB Cam Newton (plus his red-zone presence), and this is a situation that may not yield one fantasy producer in place of Stewart.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin proving doubters wrong    Mon Sep 19, 01:26 AM

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker fills in admirably    Sun Sep 18, 09:11 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker (concussion) left the Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers briefly to be evaluated for concussion. He passed tests and finished with 16 carries for 100 yards.

Footballguys view: Whittaker did well against a gassed 49ers defense, but the Vikings next week will be a different story. He's only a flex play and not a high priority waiver pickup being third in line for goal line carries and likely sharing with two backs.

Panthers | Concern about Jonathan Stewart    Sun Sep 18, 09:10 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury in the Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers, and head coach Ron Rivera said Sunday, Sept. 18, that there is a 'little bit' of concern about Stewart. The coach liked the way RBs Mike Tolbert and Fozzy Whittaker filled in.

Footballguys view: The Panthers would not have a clear handcuff start next week against the stiff Minnesota defense. Stewart has been a slow healer in the past, so we can't count on this being only a one-week absence if Stewart can't play next week.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker briefly leaves game    Sun Sep 18, 02:26 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker (head) briefly left the team's Week 2 game and was evaluated for a concussion but was able to return to the game.

Footballguys view: Whittaker may be a pickup in deep leagues if Jonathan Stewart is out for next week's game against the Vikings, but Week 2 healthy scratch Cameron Artis-Payne and fullback Mike Tolbert will also play roles in the backfield.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart injures hamstring    Sun Sep 18, 01:27 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury during the team's Week 2 game and is considered questionable to return.

Footballguys view: Fozzy Whittaker is being evaluated for a concussion. Since Cameron Artis-Payne was a healthy scratch, the Panthers could be down to one running back. Next week the Panthers have the tough Vikings defense coming to town and might not have their starting running back.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart expected to play Week 2    Fri Sep 16, 12:59 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) is expected to play in the Week 2 game against the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Sept. 18, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Stewart has a great shot to get over 20 carries in this game, as the Panthers should be able to thwart the 49ers defense and Cam Newton showed he can move the ball against any defense in Week 1. Even though there is some in-game re-injury risk, Stewart is a solid RB2 this week.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart limited again    Thu Sep 15, 02:50 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle) was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 15.

Footballguys view: One week in and already banged up. Stewart is a middling RB3 this week. The injury is a concern, and we're not totally sure how good the Niners run defense is, though they shut down Todd Gurley well enough.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to play in Week 2    Tue Sep 13, 11:49 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has shown no symptoms of a concussion following the club's Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos and is expected to play against the San Francisco 49ers in Week 2.

Footballguys view: Newton was rocked against the Broncos in the season opener last Thursday night. This week against the 49ers, Newton won't face that much pressure and should be able to have a productive game. We like him as a top-tier QB1 in this matchup.

Panthers | NFLPA checks into Cam Newton's treatment    Mon Sep 12, 03:17 AM

The NFL Players Association will ask for a formal investigation into the helmet-to-helmet hit Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton took against the Denver Broncos Thursday, Sept. 8, and the medical treatment he received afterwards.

Footballguys view: Newton was beat up on Thursday night in the season opener against the Broncos. He took several bit shots yet was never examined for a concussion during the game. After the game, Newton received some extra attention but the extent is unknown. Newton is big, tough and physical but he should be treated no differently than other QBs just because he can a lot of punishment. There should be no "hack-a-Shaq" in the NFL.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin in more than anticipated    Fri Sep 9, 02:54 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin played 'about 15 more snaps' than head coach Ron Rivera would have liked in the team's season opener Thursday, September 8, against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Benjamin was stronger at the beginning of the game than the end, but his fantasy performance was stellar considering the matchup. He has three extra days to build up his conditioning before the 49ers game, which is a great matchup.

Panthers | Cam Newton hit hard in loss     Fri Sep 9, 12:25 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 18 of his 33 passes for 194 yards, a touchdown and an interception and ran 11 times for 54 yards and a touchdown in a 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1. He was sacked three times and took at least three blows to the head.

Footballguys view: Newton played better than his passing line indicates and he might have been playing with a concussion. His running ability buoyed a good fantasy day that will probably represent one of his weaker performances this year, if only because of the top level of competition. Newton should destroy the 49ers next week.

Panthers | One catch for Ted Ginn Jr.    Fri Sep 9, 12:19 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Ted Ginn Jr. had one catch for five yards on one target in a 21-20 loss to the Denver Broncos in Week 1.

Footballguys view: GInn wasn't as involved because the Denver pass rush doesn't give quarterbacks time to look for deep routes. He'll still be a boom/bust weekly play and in on at least half of the offensive plays in the Panthers four-wide rotation.
