Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin nursing injury Thu May 21, 04:55 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (hamstring) is nursing a strained hamstring he suffered last week, according to a source. Benjamin is not likely to participate in organized team activities next week.
|Footballguys view: Benjamin had an exceptionally good rookie season, enough to drive his early ADP up into the third round. If rookie Devin Funchess can duplicate Benjamin's first season just a little, Benjamin will have an easier time with opposing secondaries. We know Cam Newton likes him, and that goes a long way towards building opportunity and production. We like him as a lot as a WR2 for your fantasy team.|

Panthers | Devin Funchess to be No. 2 WR? Wed May 20, 05:55 PM
Carolina Panthers rookie WR Devin Funchess could be the No. 2 wide receiver ahead of Jerricho Cotchery this season, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NFL.com.
|Footballguys view: Funchess isn't going to be handed the job, but he'll have to prove himself in training camp. He's a large target with the ability to play above the rim. Funchess is quite raw as a route-runner, and he's not going to get a lot of separation against NFL corners unless he improves that part of his game. He also needs to improve his concentration in order to play up to his potential as a pro. Fantasy owners can do a lot better than Funchess as the Panthers offense will still be run-heavy and Funchess is far from a sure thing as a rookie.|
Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne to be No. 2? Tue May 19, 10:30 AM
Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne is expected to win the No. 2 running back job behind starting RB Jonathan Stewart. Artis-Payne, a 2015 fifth-round draft choice, should play a significant role in the offense, in the opinion of ESPN.com's David Newton. Rookie RB Brandon Wegher and RB Fozzy Whittaker are likely to compete for the No. 3 job.
|Footballguys view: Artis-Payne shows good patience as a runner, and he has the foot frequency to get to top speed in a hurry and avoid trash near the line of scrimmage. He's an efficient runner who wastes little motion when carrying the rock. Artis-Payne is not going to break any ankles, and he doesn't break as many tackles as his size would indicate.|

Panthers | No. 2 WR job Devin Funchess' to lose? Tue May 19, 09:27 AM
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess eventually will be the Panthers' No. 2 receiver opposite WR Kelvin Benjamin, but it is unclear if the rookie will begin the 2015 season in this role, according to ESPN.com's David Newton.
|Footballguys view: Funchess can easily create mismatches on the field because of his size (6'4" 232 pounds), but he has a lot to develop before he's a reliable starter. He dropped 20 passes over the last three years and needs to improve his focus and concentration. Funchess looks huge, but he doesn't win enough contested catches and needs to better his "my ball" mentality. The rookie will battle with WRs Jerricho Cotchery, Ted Ginn Jr., Philly Brown and Stephen Hill this summer.|
Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery expected to stick Tue May 19, 09:22 AM
Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery is expected to remain with the Panthers as their No. 3 or No. 4 wide receiver in 2015, according to ESPN.com's David Newton.
|Footballguys view: Cotchery's best seasons are far behind him, and he's unlikely to replicate the 10 touchdown season he had in 2013 for the Steelers. However, he does give the team quality veteran depth and a guide for the younger receivers on the roster.|
Jerricho Cotchery player page
Panthers | Devin Funchess being moved around Fri May 15, 12:36 AM
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has played all three receiver positions during minicamp.
|Footballguys view: Funchess was considered a WR/TE tweener, although a pure receiving TE a la Ladarius Green. He could get snaps all over the offensive formation, and he'll do most of his damage on short and intermediate stuff. He's more of a danger to Greg Olsen's fantasy value than Kelvin Benjamin's.|
Panthers | D.J. Swearinger on radar Mon May 11, 10:29 PM
The Carolina Panthers are interested in SS D.J. Swearinger, waived by the Houston Texans Monday, May 11. Many teams would have to pass on him for the Panthers to get a claim off waivers.
|Footballguys view: We're not sure Swearinger is going to get picked up via waivers. He's struggled covering and in run support. The Panthers are looking for secondary help, but Swearinger isn't the best answer.|

Panthers | Devin Funchess signs contract Mon May 11, 07:24 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess signed a contract with the team Monday, May 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Funchess is a large wide receiver, but he has a lot of work to do in order to be an effective pro. He needs to learn how to better use his frame to box out smaller defenders and win at the point of the catch. Funchess needs to learn how to become a better route-runner and play with more explosion out of his breaks.|
Panthers | Shaq Thompson leaves practice Fri May 8, 06:42 PM
Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring) left practice early Friday, May 8, because of a hamstring injury.
|Footballguys view: No word on the severity yet. Thompson is one of our favorite rookies from this draft class. He can be used in a role similar to what the Seahawks use Kam Chancellor. Thompson may not be as violent as Chancellor at the point of attack, but he's got the athleticism and speed to be moved all over the field.|
Panthers | Devin Funchess dealing with cramps Fri May 8, 05:26 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess was carted off the field during practice Friday, May 8, but is just dealing with leg cramps, according to the team.
|Footballguys view: Funchess is an interesting pick for the Panthers. He's a big target--like last year's first-round pick Kelvin Benjamin--but Funchess drops too many passes and is not an explosive route-runner. Funchess is built more like a move tight end, so it will be interesting to see how Carolina tries to fit him into the offense.|
Panthers | Shaq Thompson signs with Carolina Thu May 7, 10:07 PM
Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson signed his rookie contract Thursday, May 7. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: We love this pick. Thompson is listed as a linebacker, but he really plays more like safety Kam Chancellor (Seahawks). He can roam the field looking to make an impact play. Thompson arrives at the ball-carrier swiftly, and he's got the athleticism to cover in space. It will be interesting to see how Thompson fits on the Panthers defense.|
Panthers | Devin Funchess to be used at WR Fri May 1, 08:07 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess will be used exclusively at wide receiver, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.
|Footballguys view: Well, he's a decent receiver, but there were other receivers on the board who are probably better fits (Jaelem Strong anyone?). Cam Newton should be a little happier but has to wonder where his protection is.|
Panthers | Devin Funchess selected by Carolina Fri May 1, 07:59 PM
Michigan TE Devin Funchess was selected 41st overall by the Carolina Panthers in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1.
|Footballguys view: This is a bit of a head-scratcher. The Panthers still have no help on the offensive line, and Funchness is a decent but not fantastic tight end. He won't have an impact immediately for fantasy, but is probably worth a second or third round rookie pick.|
Panthers | Shaq Thompson selected 25th overall Thu Apr 30, 10:49 PM
Washington LB Shaq Thompson was selected 25th overall by the Carolina Panthers in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.
|Footballguys view: We love this pick..and this fit. Thompson is Kam Chancellor-like because he's a linebacker who can play free safety. The Panthers selected a similar player when they added linebacker Thomas Davis out of Georgia years ago. Davis has become a star with the Panthers, and we could see Thompson following a similar path.|
Panthers | Express interest in Shaq Thompson Sun Apr 26, 09:55 AM
Washington LB Shaq Thompson said he met with the Carolina Panthers this offseason, and the team also conducted an on-campus workout with him.
|Footballguys view: Every team should be interested in Thompson. He's a player built like Kam Chancellor (Seahawks) and he can line up at linebacker or strong safety as a pro. Some think he could even still play running back. Thompson should be a first-round pick, and he's a dangerous weapon when used the right way.|
Panthers | Luke Kuechly's option picked up Sat Apr 25, 07:08 PM
Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly's fifth-year option was exercised Saturday, April 25. Kuechly will make $11.1 million in 2016.
|Footballguys view: The biggest no-brainer decision in the history of the planet.|

Panthers | Benardrick McKinney works out Fri Apr 24, 02:53 AM
Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney worked out for the Carolina Panthers on Thursday, April 23.
|Footballguys view: McKinney is one of the best inside linebackers in this class. Look for him to come off the board in the late first or early second round. McKinney loves contact, and he can strike fear into opponents. He has good straight-line speed, but McKinney could struggle in coverage at the pro level.|
Panthers | Three Oklahoma OL work out Wed Apr 22, 02:44 AM
Oklahoma OL Daryl Williams, OL Tyrus Thompson and OL Adam Shead all worked out for the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, April 21.Link to story
Panthers | Two OL work out Tue Apr 21, 07:47 AM
Utah OL Junior Salt and Utah OL Jeremiah Poutasi worked out for the Carolina Panthers on Monday, April 20.
|Footballguys view: Poutasi should be a late-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, while Salt is expected to go undrafted. At Utah, Poutasi played in a two-point stance and might be moved inside to guard at the pro level because of his athletic limitations. Salt sat out a year and went on a two-year mission, so his age (27) may be a factor for interested teams. He's a powerful player who does little at the second level of the defense.|
Panthers | Landon Collins visits Fri Apr 17, 07:26 PM
Alabama SS Landon Collins met with the Carolina Panthers Friday, April 17, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: Collins is an intimidating player who can line up in the box and attack as a run-defender. He struggles in coverage, and is best playing facing the line of scrimmage. Round one is where we should see him go off the board.|
Panthers | Ronald Darby visits Thu Apr 16, 02:49 AM
Florida State CB Ronald Darby visited the Carolina Panthers recently.
|Footballguys view: Darby has the upside to be a starter in the pros. He's got the speed to make up ground in the blink of an eye. This helps him if he takes false steps on a break or play-action fake. Darby is not a hitter, but he has shown the willingness to play press or off coverage. Look for him to come off the board in the second round of the draft.|
Panthers | Interested in Jalen Collins Sat Apr 11, 10:08 AM
Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins is scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers before the 2015 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: Collins has the upside to be a shutdown corner in the NFL. He's got ideal height, weight, speed but his technique needs work after only 10 games started during his collegiate career.|
Panthers | Charles Tillman signed Thu Apr 9, 04:01 PM
Free-agent CB Charles Tillman (Bears) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Thursday, April 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: The Panthers need some help in the secondary, but Tillman is well past his prime at this point. He's coming off a triceps injury which cost him the whole of the 2014 NFL season. Tillman's had health issues for years so we are guessing his impact will be relatively minimal. NFL.com's Nick Till pointed out this transaction may be more about Ron Rivera--a former defensive coordinator of Tillman's from the Bears--kicking the tires on a former player than anything else.|

Panthers | CAR to meet with Breshad Perriman Wed Apr 8, 01:17 PM
Central Florida WR Breshad Perriman is scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers before the 2015 NFL Draft, according to sources.
|Footballguys view: At 6'2" 215 pounds, Perriman is more explosive than other receivers his size. He can get off the line of scrimmage quickly and cleanly, and Perriman does a good job maintaining his speed out of the break. He's raw as a route-runner, but his physical skill set make him an intriguing option for teams in the late first or early second round. The Panthers need all the help they can get at wide receiver behind Kelvin Benjamin. Perriman would be a great deep target for Cam Newton.|
Panthers | Two players waived Wed Apr 1, 05:10 PM
Carolina Panthers OG Derek Dennis and LB Horace Miller were placed on no-recall waivers Wednesday, April 1.
|Footballguys view: Both spent most of last season on the team's practice squad. There may not be many teams lined up to sign either one on the open market.|
Panthers | Greg Jennings not coming to Carolina Tue Mar 31, 10:18 PM
Free-agent WR Greg Jennings (Vikings) visited the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, March 31, and he tweeted he has a deal done. However, a source is reporting that the deal is not with the Panthers.
|Footballguys view: Stay tuned here people. No deal may be done at this time, but things could change quickly (like they always do) in this situation.|

Panthers | Greg Jennings signs with Carolina Tue Mar 31, 06:59 PM
Free-agent WR Greg Jennings (Vikings) signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, March 31. Financial terms were undisclosed.
|Footballguys view: The Panthers need help at the wide receiver position opposite Kelvin Benjamin. Jennings still has something left in the tank, and he'll provide Cam Newton with a reliable veteran presence.|

Panthers | Sign Jason Trusnik Tue Mar 31, 04:08 PM
Free-agent LB Jason Trusnik (Dolphins) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, March 31. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Trusnik started six games last year for the Dolphins where he played 397 snaps over the 16-game season. He can play inside or outside linebacker, and Trusnik is a two-down run-stuffer who can also contribute on special teams.|
Jason Trusnik player page
Panthers | Jordan Todman signed Mon Mar 30, 01:33 PM
Free-agent RB Jordan Todman (Jaguars) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 30. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Only fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should be interested here. Todman has good straight-line speed, but he's not big enough to take on more than a change-of-pace role in the NFL. Todman will compete for touches behind Jonathan Stewart, and the Panthers will likely draft a back too.|
Jordan Todman player page
Panthers | Randy Gregory working out with Carolina Mon Mar 30, 10:45 AM
Nebraska LB Randy Gregory is working out for the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 30. Gregory met with Carolina last week as well.
|Footballguys view: Gregory tested positive for marijuana at the NFL combine earlier this year, but he is unlikely to fall out of the first round. Teams will have to decide to Gregory has kicked the habit, or if this problem with weed is going to continue (he had two positive tests in college at Nebraska).|
Panthers | Jonathan Stewart limited to 15 carries Sat Mar 28, 04:54 PM
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart will ideally be limited to 15 carries a game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. The team will look to draft a running back in the 2015 NFL Draft that will likely take eight to 10 carries per game.
|Footballguys view: You hear that sound? It's Jonathan Stewart's fantasy owners sobbing upon hearing this news. Stewart was supposed to be "the man" this year without DeAngelo Williams. Now, it looks like he's going to be the lead back...but splitting the workload. This is a great RB draft class, so we don't blame the Panthers for looking to add another back.|
Jonathan Stewart player page
Panthers | Ben Ijalana visits Sat Mar 28, 11:07 AM
Free-agent OG Ben Ijalana (Jets) met with the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 27.
|Footballguys view: Ijalana has seen his career knocked off track by injuries after the Colts selected him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft. He only played six snaps for the Jets last year, and if the Panthers sign him it's only a move for depth...and he's no lock to make the final roster.|
Panthers | Jonathan Martin claimed Fri Mar 27, 04:30 PM
San Francisco 49ers OT Jonathan Martin was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 27.
|Footballguys view: Martin has started 32 games in his career at both tackle spots. He started nine games for the 49ers in 2014 at right tackle. The Panthers wanted better depth and competition on the offensive line, and that's why they made the move to acquire Martin.|
Panthers | Jarrett Boykin signed Fri Mar 27, 02:06 PM
Free-agent WR Jarrett Boykin (Packers) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 27. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Boykin gets to go home as he grew up in Charlotte and played his high school ball there. After catching 49 passes in 2013, Boykin only snared three passes in 2014 as he fell down the pecking order in Green Bay. The Panthers need wide receiver help behind Kelvin Benjamin, and Boykin will get to prove if he can be more than a reserve/part-time player.|

Panthers | Stephen Hill may be an option Fri Mar 27, 11:33 AM
Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill may be an option in 2015, and head coach Ron Rivera said he's excited to see Hill in camp. 'With his size (6-4, 215) and speed and his ability to get vertical, if he can assimilate to what we do - and I think he will,' Rivera said. 'He seems to be a very smart man - he might be a guy that has an opportunity to contribute for us.'
|Footballguys view: Following in the footsteps of former Georgia Tech WRs Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas, Hill has been a colossal bust. If the Panthers add him, it will only be as a reserve receiver.|

Panthers | CAR interested in Greg Jennings Sun Mar 22, 02:58 AM
Free-agent WR Greg Jennings (Vikings) has drawn interest from the Carolina Panthers. Jennings visited the team on Saturday, March 21.
|Footballguys view: Jennings would give the team valuable veteran depth at the position. The Panthers could plug him into the lineup as a slot receiver or a starter on the outside opposite Kelvin Benjamin.|

Panthers | Alan Ball signs with Carolina Thu Mar 19, 11:00 AM
Free-agent CB Alan Ball (Jaguars) signed a one-year, $2 million deal with the Carolina Panthers Thursday, March 19. The deal includes a $1 million signing bonus, a $950,000 salary, a $50,000 workout bonus and up to $500,000 in playing time incentives, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: While it wasn't the biggest need for Carolina, it will help the defense keep things close over the next season and for a reasonable price.|

Panthers | Will work out Trae Waynes Wed Mar 18, 03:30 PM
Michigan State CB Trae Waynes said he is scheduled to have a private workout with the Carolina Panthers.
|Footballguys view: Waynes is arguably the best cornerback in this draft. He's got the length at 6'1" to hang with taller receivers on downfield routes. Waynes does a good job of re-routing his man, and he's got the recovery speed to make up ground in a hurry.|
Panthers | Carolina to meet with Todd Gurley Wed Mar 18, 12:23 PM
Georgia RB Todd Gurley (knee) is scheduled to have a pre-draft visit with the Carolina Panthers.
|Footballguys view: Jonathan Stewart's fantasy owners would be bummed out if the Panthers picked up Gurley. Even though he's coming off a knee injury, Gurley should be a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. We'd hate Carolina as a landing spot for him because of Stewart's presence, and the team's willingness to run a frustrating RBBC. Gurley is a stud, and he could be a dominant player in the NFL. We'd like it better if he went someplace where he could be "the man."|

Panthers | Kurt Coleman signs with Carolina Mon Mar 16, 11:26 AM
Updating an earlier report, free-agent SS Kurt Coleman (Chiefs) signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 16.
|Footballguys view: A smart move for the Panthers here. Coleman has familiarity with Panthers defensive coordinator Sean McDermott from their time together with the Eagles. Capable of playing both safety spots, Coleman is a valuable reserve with starter's upside.|

Panthers | Teddy Williams signs Thu Mar 12, 07:31 PM
Free-agent CB Teddy Williams (Jaguars) signed a two-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Thursday, March 12, according to his agent.
|Footballguys view: Williams made it into the NFL as a wide receiver coming out of Texas-San Antonio as an undrafted free agent in 2010. He converted to cornerback for the Colts in 2012, bounced to wide receiver again with the Cardinals, then back to corner for the Jaguars. Follow along? He's a depth guy for Carolina with an injury history that includes an Achilles' injury.|
