Panthers | Greg Olsen a full go    Thu Sep 18, 04:46 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (calf) practiced in full Thursday, Sept. 18.

Footballguys view: With Newton back, his more reliable target in the passing game is Olsen. He's a low-end TE1 each week.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin shows growing pains    Thu Sep 18, 04:40 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin looked good in his first NFL game in Week 1, but he showed growing pains on route running, downfield blocking and with dropped passes in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions. The team graded Benjamin a 70 out of 100 in Week 1 for poor routes and a lack of blocking. He was graded at 93 last week despite catching only two passes for 43 yards. Benjamin also had three drops against the Lions after having a high drop rate of 9 percent at Florida State in 2013.

Footballguys view: The concern about Benjamin, and why many didn't like the pick, was that he was very raw. So it's no surprise he needs work in blocking or route running, That said, he has still managed to play well and put up nice numbers, which means his upside is significant, though it may not be fulfilled this year. This week we feel Benjamin should put up WR3 numbers even if Tampa Bay plays tough.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin returns to full practice    Thu Sep 18, 04:31 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) practiced in full Thursday, Sept. 18.

Footballguys view: Benjamin has surprised many with his season so far and he seems to have built some good chemistry with Cam Newton. I guess all those off season pitch-and-toss sessions paid off. If he plays, Benjamin should put up solid WR3 numbers.

Panthers | Cam Newton sore    Tue Sep 16, 01:16 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was dealing with a bit of soreness in his foot after the Week 2 game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. However, Rivera thinks it's a good sign after Newton had offseason ankle surgery back in March. 'Because it's more sore than his back," Rivera said. "Which is good. At least, I think it's good. He's moving around pretty good and he's feeling pretty good about himself.'

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams expected to play in Week 3    Tue Sep 16, 01:11 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (thigh) is expected to return to practice Wednesday, Sept. 17, and be ready to play in Week 3 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Williams sat out in Week 2 with a thigh injury that flared up earlier in the week. Williams led the team with 14 carries and 72 yards rushing in Week 1.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should not be relying on Williams. If he returns in Week 3, then he will split time with Jonathan Stewart. That makes Williams a low-end RB3/flex play against the Steelers.

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (thigh) is scheduled to work out Tuesday, Sept. 16, in order to test his injured thigh.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners have already moved on. Williams is on a lot of waiver wires out there because of his lack of production and inability to stay healthy.

Panthers | Cam Newton plays well in return    Sun Sep 14, 11:34 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) completed 22 of his 34 pass attempts for 281 yards and one touchdown with no interceptions in the Week 2 win against the Detroit Lions. He also ran four times for 19 yards. 'I felt like I was getting antsy early on and that comes from a lack of playing time,' Newton said Sunday, Sept. 14. 'I was getting my feet back under me and as the game went on I started feeling more comfortable and it showed.'

Footballguys view: Newton spread the ball around and could have had a bigger game with better hands from Kelvin Benjamin. He's back to being a must-start QB1 against the Steelers next week.

The Carolina Panthers have declared OG Andrew Norwell, RB DeAngelo Williams, OT Garry Williams, DL Greg Hardy, LB Jason Williams, QB Joe Webb, SS Tre Boston inactive for Week 2.

Footballguys view: Jonathan Stewart gets the start, but he will be part of a committee approach against a tough Lions front, so there's still not much beyond an aspirational flex play here.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams expected to sit    Sun Sep 14, 09:24 AM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (thigh) is expected to sit out of the Week 2 game. RB Jonathan Stewart would start in his place.

Footballguys view: Stewart is still just a flex play as a committee back in an unexciting offense.

Panthers | Greg Olsen will play     Fri Sep 12, 01:45 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (non-injury) fully practiced Friday, Sept. 12, and is probable for Week 2.

Footballguys view: Olsen was fantastic in the short passing game at Tampa, and he should be a high volume target again this week as a solid TE1 play.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams questionable    Fri Sep 12, 01:42 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (thigh) did not participate in practice Friday, Sept. 12, and has been ruled out for the team's Week 2 game.

Footballguys view: Jonathan Stewart should get more work, but he was unimpressive against the Bucs in Week 1 and should only be considered a flex play in PPR leagues at best this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton probable    Fri Sep 12, 01:41 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 13 and is probable.

Footballguys view: Newton will start, but against Detroit's tough set of defensive tackles and with the Panthers likely being cautious about his use in the running game, it might be best for Newton to be on your bench this week.

Panthers | Friday injury report for Week 2    Fri Sep 12, 01:40 PM

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams sits out    Thu Sep 11, 06:06 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (thigh) did not participate in practice Thursday, Sept. 11.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should not look to Williams with much confidence--even if he wasn't on the injury report. You likely have better options to start. Williams is a desperation "what the heck" flex play in Week 2 against the Lions.

Panthers | Cam Newton set for Sunday    Thu Sep 11, 05:59 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 11.

Footballguys view: Awesome! We're excited to see Newton back on the field. We'll see if he can keep the offense moving. Newton's return takes away from the ground game as he can eat up rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. It will be interesting to note if he can properly involve rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin on Sunday against the Lions.

Panthers | Greg Olsen exits practice    Thu Sep 11, 01:01 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (undisclosed) left the team's practice before it began Thursday, Sept. 11. Olsen was seen hurrying back into the stadium.

Footballguys view: Olsen had a solid game against Tampa Bay in Week 1. If he plays, we have him as one of the top TE1 in fantasy this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton a full participant    Wed Sep 10, 04:11 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) practiced in full Wednesday, Sept. 10.

Footballguys view: Newton should be back in the starting lineup this week. Surprisingly, backup Derek Anderson wasn't terrible filling in for Newton in Week 1. Having Newton back in action will be a boost for the offense.

Panthers | Cam Newton in full pads    Wed Sep 10, 01:31 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) was in full pads for practice Wednesday, Sept. 10, indicating that he should return to action in Week 2 against the Detroit Lions after missing the season opener.

Footballguys view: Rib injuries have to be monitored closely because they largely come down to a pain-tolerance issue. Derek Anderson wasn't horrible filling in for Newton last week, but Newton playing is a huge upgrade.

Footballguys view: We expected Newton to start in Week 1, but we saw Derek Anderson instead. Monitor Newton's progress through practice this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton will not play    Sun Sep 7, 03:18 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) has been declared inactive for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Derek Anderson gets the start. Kelvin Benjamin is maybe an upside flex, but otherwise the Panthers offense is a fantasy black hole at Tampa.

Panthers | Cam Newton may miss several weeks    Sun Sep 7, 12:52 PM

The Carolina Panthers fear that QB Cam Newton (ribs) could miss three to four weeks because of if he takes a hit on his injured ribs. Newton can change the team's mind if he can show he can protect his ribs while playing. At this point, the team plans to start QB Derek Anderson Week 1.

Footballguys view: Newton shouldn't be in your lineup. Even if he plays, his role in the running game will clearly be limited.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to sit    Sun Sep 7, 12:13 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) is not expected to play Week 1 because of his injured ribs.

Footballguys view: Derek Anderson will likely start and that means the Bucs are a good defense to plug in from the waiver wire. Kelvin Benjamin might be ok because Derek Anderson at least knows how to throw the ball up for a big receiver to go and get it.

Panthers | Cam Newton could sit    Sun Sep 7, 09:10 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) could be held out of the team's Week 1 game by head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera may hold him back to make sure he is healthy for the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: Either way, it sounds like Newton's condition is sensitive enough that the Panthers should dial back his involvement in the running game even if he does play. If you have any viable QB2 option, Newton should be on your bench.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin in sync with QB    Sun Sep 7, 12:39 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has built a strong relationship with QB Cam Newton both on and off the field, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera said that when Benjamin lines up and sees a cornerback in a certain position or a safety too tight, Benjamin can look at Newton and they know immediately what to do.

Footballguys view: This matches everything we've heard out of Carolina this summer. Benjamin is a great upside WR3/Flex play as long as Newton suits up, but that is far from a given.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes full reps    Sat Sep 6, 03:53 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) took full repetitions in practice Saturday, Sept. 6, with no setbacks. Newton could very well be on schedule to play against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: We think he'll play, but we'd have a good backup option in our pocket just in case. If he plays, we see him as having fringe QB1 value - there are better matchups and healthier quarterbacks - but he can give you points with his feet as well as his arm. Of course, if the ribs flair up, he could end up of the game, so remember there is a bit of risk there.
