Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin feels great    Tue Jul 29, 01:41 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) said he woke up feeling great Tuesday, July 29. Benjamin said he will wait for the OK from trainers before returning.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Panthers here. Benjamin is a raw rookie who should be the No1 target for Cam Newton this year at the wide receiver position. He's big and has a large wingspan, but Benjamin is lumbering off the line of scrimmage and he's not quite as physical as a player his size should be.

Panthers | Thomas Davis drawing from his injury experiences    Tue Jul 29, 11:43 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis has returned three times from torn anterior cruciate ligaments, earning a Pro Bowl berth in 2013, and has used his experience to coax injured Panthers to stay focused, he told NFL Network's Steve Wyche.

Footballguys view: Davis has fought through multiple severe injuries during his pro career. He's a fantastic story of resilience and determination. Any injured Panthers player should listen closely to what he has to say.

Panthers | Cam Newton taking it easy in practice    Tue Jul 29, 12:09 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) isn't running outside of the pocket during training camp, but he has been able to plant in the pocket to make throws without any complications.

Footballguys view: It's a wise move for the Panthers. There's no need to rush Newton back into full duty until he's closer to full strength. Newton's current ADP is QB10 (8.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | No timetable for Kelvin Benjamin    Mon Jul 28, 07:33 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) doesn't have a timetable for his return after bruising his left knee, but he is expected to be back in days, not weeks. Head coach Ron Rivera said Benjamin should be back before the end of training camp Aug. 12. So far in camp, Benjamin has looked really good and hasn't dropped a pass during team drills while running with the first-team offense. WR Jason Avant moved up to the first-team offense Monday, July 28, with Benjamin out.

Footballguys view: The Panthers want to be as cautious as possible here. Benjamin is going to be a big part of their passing game if healthy. The 2014 first-round pick was supposed to be the centerpiece of the team's new-look wide receiver corps. Benjamin has good size and a large wingspan, but he's raw as a receiver. He's sluggish off the line of scrimmage, his routes are rounded off instead of being sharp and he's not as physical as you would expect for a receiver his size. Benjamin's current ADP is WR51 (11.05) in 12-team PPR leagues, and he's a boom/bust play in 2014.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin update    Mon Jul 28, 03:39 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) has a bone bruise, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The Panthers don't need any injuries at the wide receiver position, especially to their first-round pick. Benjamin is a big-bodied wide receiver, but he struggles with leverage and isn't as dominant as he should be. There is swelling in the knee but nothing is structurally damaged according to Rivera.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's injury not expected to be serious    Mon Jul 28, 01:11 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's (knee) left knee injury isn't expected to be serious, and head coach Ron Rivera is optimistic that Benjamin won't miss much time. Benjamin is heading for an MRI exam Monday, July 28. 'He's had a great camp,' Rivera said. 'He came in in tip-top shape and ready to roll. He's one of those guys who spent time with Cam (before camp) working out. It's one of those that we want to make sure and be smart about.' Benjamin's MRI results are expected later Monday.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin to have MRI    Mon Jul 28, 10:52 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will have an MRI on his left knee. He bumped knees with another player in practice Sunday, July 27.

Footballguys view: The MRI is precautionary, but it absolutely something to note any time a player undergoes an MRI. We'll update this situation when we hear the results. Benjamin has been impressive so far in camp, running with the first team and not dropping a ball during team drills. One beat writer even said he "looks the part of a star receiver". Jerricho Cotchery would benefit the most if Benjamin misses time in camp.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker signs    Sun Jul 27, 04:44 PM

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent RB Fozzy Whittaker (Browns) to an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all the help they can get at the running back position. Rookie Tyler Gaffney has been lost for the season with a knee injury, and Jonathan Stewart could miss a couple of weeks (at least) with an injured hamstring.

Panthers | Tyler Gaffney out for season    Sat Jul 26, 08:52 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Tyler Gaffney (knee) will miss the entire 2014 season because of a torn lateral meniscus in his knee.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the rookie here. The Panthers are incredibly thin at running back now. DeAngelo Williams and Kenjon Barner are the only healthy backs right now.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart update    Sat Jul 26, 03:33 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) will miss two to four weeks with a hamstring injury. It was originally reported that Stewart would only miss one to two weeks.

Footballguys view: But he's not concerned, right? Stewart is constantly banged up, and it's difficult to trust him on your fantasy team. We'll see if he can (finally) stay healthy and help out as a RB5 in 2014.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart optimistic    Sat Jul 26, 03:24 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) said he's not too concerned about his hamstring injury. Stewart said recovering from his hamstring injury will be easier than recovering from his previous ankle injuries.

Footballguys view: Stewart isn't concerned, but fantasy owners are. His current ADP is RB49 (11.11) in 12-team PPR leagues. Talent has never been a question with Stewart, but injuries have held him back almost every year of his pro career.

Panthers | Cam Newton not 100 percent    Fri Jul 25, 08:38 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) said his ankle is not 100 percent at this point, but it is getting better each day.

Panthers | More on Jonathan Stewart    Thu Jul 24, 03:22 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is expected to miss one-to-two weeks as he recovers from a hamstring injury. Stewart will not be placed on the team's Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Talent has never been a question with Stewart. However, staying healthy has been a big problem for the veteran back. In the meantime, we'll see the Panthers lean on DeAngelo Williams in camp. Stewart's absence will give a bigger opportunity to guys like Kenjon Barner and rookie Tyler Gaffney.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart dealing with hamstring issue    Thu Jul 24, 12:50 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury, but the team will leave him on the active roster heading into training camp.

Footballguys view: That Stewart is not being placed on the PUP or NFI list is somewhat positive because it means the Panthers don't expect to be without him for too long, but the fact that this happened over a week ago and Stewart is projected to be out for another week or two according to some sources means that this is a 2-4 week injury. We would be concerned about any player with a non-trivial hamstring injury at this time of year. When it's Stewart, his seemingly discount price of a pick in the 13th round or later is looking less attractive. Don't overreact and go after DeAngelo Williams on this news, either, he was little help to fantasy teams despite Stewart missing much of 2013.

Panthers | Cam Newton cleared    Thu Jul 24, 12:35 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was cleared for practice, according to general manager David Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Newton's offseason ankle surgery was never seen a real threat to his fantasy value this year, so this positive news should not affect his fantasy stock.

Panthers | Greg Olsen tired of WR criticism    Thu Jul 24, 01:33 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen said he is tired of hearing criticism about Carolina's new receiving corps, which is largely made up of journeymen and unproven commodities. Olsen added that the Panthers' offensive identity is not going to change, so controlling the clock through a balanced offense remains important.

Panthers | Jason Avant to be No. 3 WR    Sat Jul 19, 10:47 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jason Avant likely will serve as the No. 3 wide receiver this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Avant has the experience edge over guys like Tavarres King and Marvin McNutt. The Panthers are unlikely to have a robust passing game this year, so Avant won't have much fantasy value this year.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery expected to start    Sat Jul 19, 10:46 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery is expected to be one of the starting wide receivers this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Cotchery is a savvy veteran who can sharply run routes and get open. We're not expecting the Panthers passing game to be that productive, so Cotchery's fantasy value is low. Take a look at him as a reserve receiver (end of the bench) or waiver-wire option in deep PPR leagues. His current ADP is WR65 (14.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton limited during workout    Sat Jul 19, 10:37 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) was limited in his mobility when he worked out with some of his wide receivers last week.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Newton is going to be somewhat limited leading up to the start of the regular season. We like that he went out and put in some extra time with what is largely a brand new WR corps.

Panthers | Kenjon Barner a top choice as returner    Sat Jul 19, 09:21 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner is the leading candidate for the kick return job entering training camp.

Footballguys view: Barner has the speed, agility and quickness to be a standout player as a return man. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should be monitoring his progress as a running back in training camp and the preseason.

Panthers | Cam Newton works out with receivers    Fri Jul 18, 10:39 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton held a three-day throwing session with WR Kelvin Benjamin, QBs Joe Webb and Matt Blanchard, one tight end and nine other receivers this week.

Footballguys view: It's good for Newton to establish chemistry with a whole new group of receivers. The Panthers passing game is not going to give us many fireworks this year in fantasy, but look to a guy like Benjamin later in your draft. He's big and can leap out of the building. This could make him a prime red-zone target this year. Benjamin is lumbering off the line of scrimmage and not as physical as a player his size should be. His current ADP is WR48 (10.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Greg Hardy punishment could wait    Thu Jul 17, 12:15 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy could avoid immediate punishment from the NFL after being found guilty on charges of communicating threats and assaulting a female because he filed for a second trial in Superior Court in front of a jury. The NFL could choose to suspend Hardy for as many as four games based on recent disciplinary actions. League spokesman Brian McCarthy said the NFL would review Hardy's legal situation at the 'appropriate time.'

Footballguys view: We expect the NFL to eventually take a strong stance here. The league usually doesn't punish first-time offenders until their legal cases have run their course. However, the Panthers could take action against Hardy before the NFL's decision.

Panthers | Could cut Greg Hardy    Thu Jul 17, 09:10 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy could be cut by the team because, according to former DE Mike Rucker, Panthers owner Jerry Richardson is sensitive to the topic of domestic violence.

Footballguys view: Hardy is playing on a one-year franchise tag in 2014. The guilty verdict could at least keep the team from looking to re-sign him to a long-term deal. There's a strong chance the league suspends Hardy when the legal process has been exhausted.

Panthers | Greg Hardy found guilty    Tue Jul 15, 11:02 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy was found guilty Tuesday, July 15, of assaulting of assaulting a female and communicating threats. Mecklenburg County Judge Rebecca Thorn-Tin sentenced Hardy to 18 months' probation. A 60-day jail sentence was suspended. Hardy's attorney Chris Fialko said he'll appeal and Hardy has asked for a jury trial in superior court.

Footballguys view: The appeal will likely delay any suspension coming from the NFL. Cases like this can be pushed back quite some time, so the league is going to have to wait before they suspend Hardy.

Panthers | Greg Hardy pleads not guilty     Tue Jul 15, 02:28 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy appeared in court Tuesday, July 15, on charges of communicating threats and assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

Footballguys view: Hardy's ex-girlfriend testified in court Tuesday, July 15, that Hardy strangled her and threatened to kill her. Some believe the NFL has a problem with domestic violence and the league will take appropriate action (suspension, fines) when the legal process has exhausted for Hardy.

Panthers | Long-term deal unlikely for Greg Hardy    Mon Jul 14, 06:14 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy is unlikely to reach a long-term deal with the team before the deadline Tuesday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is what happens when you get in trouble with the law with a contract on the line. Hardy had character concerns when he came out of college, and that's why he fell to the sixth round. He's set to go to trial Tuesday for two misdemeanor assault charges after he allegedly threatened to kill his ex-girlfriend earlier this offseason.

Panthers | Not concerned with perception of wide receiver group    Fri Jul 11, 01:31 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery said the wide receivers on the team are not concerned with what the perception is of that group. They are all about working hard and competing.

Footballguys view: It's good that they don't concern themselves with what is being said in the media because it's not good. Carolina has arguably the worst group of wide receivers in the league. They'll be relying heavily on Cotchery and rookie Kelvin Benjamin in 2014.

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery said he will participate in a throwing session with QB Cam Newton next week to help get on the same page before the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Cotchery is a seasoned veteran, and he knows the Panthers need to build chemistry between Newton and the entirely new group of wideouts. We'll see Cotchery compete for a starting job (and likely win) opposite rookie Kelvin Benjamin.
