Panthers | Phil Snow to run Carolina's defense    Mon Jan 20, 12:04 PM

Updating previous reports, Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Snow was named as the new defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers on Monday, Jan. 20.

Footballguys view: New Panthers head coach (and former Baylor head coach) Matt Rhule loves Snow and has hired him as his DC in all three of his coaching stops. They have some talent on defense in Carolina but have big shoes to fill in the recently retired Luke Kuechly. We'll see how Snow takes advantage of the talent that is left.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly retires    Tue Jan 14, 08:40 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly announced his retirement from professional football Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Footballguys view: This retirement was a surprise to most around the league. A top-10 pick back in the 2012 NFL draft, Kuechly was a star and a key piece of the Panthers defense for years. He compiled seven Pro Bowls, five All-Pros, and Defensive Rookie of the Year (2012) and Defensive Player of the Year (2013) honors. Do not be surprised to see Kuechly in the Pro Football Hall of Fame some day.

Panthers | Mike Phair headed to Carolina    Mon Jan 13, 12:31 PM

Indianapolis Colts defensive line coach Mike Phair is expected to join the Carolina Panthers in the same capacity under new head coach Matt Rhule, according to multiple reports.

Footballguys view: Phair first coaching job was at Arizona State with new Panthers defensive coordinator Phil Snow. The Colts defensive line improved under Phair. He was originally hired to be Josh McDaniels' defensive line coach before McDaniels ended up not taking the job.

Panthers | Cam Newton still an option in Carolina?    Wed Jan 8, 09:15 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (foot) wasn't ruled out as a potential starting option for the 2020 season by new head coach Matt Rhule Wednesday, Jan. 8. 'I certainly look forward to working with him. I hope so. But I don't know enough about, really, everything that's kinda happening right now,' Rhule said when asked if Newton is part of the team's future plans.

Footballguys view: The future is unclear for Newton but speculation remains that he will be on the trade block this offseason. The 2015 NFL MVP is coming off of season-ending foot surgery and will enter the final year of his contract.

Panthers | Matt Rhule headed to Carolina    Tue Jan 7, 10:19 AM

Baylor head coach Matt Rhule is finalizing a deal to become the Carolina Panthers head coach Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: Rhule turned around Baylor in three years and now makes the jump to the NFL. Panthers owner Dave Tepper moved quickly as Rhule was set to be interviewed by the New York Giants on Tuesday. He turned down a meeting with the Browns earlier this month and reports indicated that Rhule would remain at Baylor. Tepper must've been able to change his mind, likely with a hefty salary. The Panthers won't have a quarterback if/when they trade Cam Newton this offseason, so Rhule will likely be starting from scratch at the position.

Panthers | Big jump for D.J. Moore    Fri Jan 3, 09:55 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore finished his sophomore season with 87 catches on 135 targets for 1,175 yards after logging 55 receptions on 82 targets for 788 yards as a rookie.

Footballguys view: Moore became a playmaker in a big way for the Panthers in 2019. With Cam Newton likely moving on this offseason, it will be interesting to see who replaces him. No matter the quarterback, he had better build strong chemistry with Moore.

  Panthers | Christian McCaffrey a 2-position All-Pro    Fri Jan 3, 12:25 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey was voted a first-team Associated Press All-Pro at two positions: Running back and the relatively new offensive flex position.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey is only the third player in the NFL history (Roger Craig, Marshall Faulk) to be part of the 1,000/1,000 club. He is dangerous as a runner and receiver, so getting All-Pro at two positions is quite fitting.

Panthers | Josh McDaniels sought by Panthers    Mon Dec 30, 11:29 AM

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels has been sought for an interview by the Carolina Panthers for their head coaching vacancy.

Footballguys view: Here we go again with McDaniels getting interest as a potential head coach. He's been a head coach before, with the Broncos for about a year and a half a decade ago. McDaniels is a different man now and will pick and choose which job he takes...if he takes one. He was set to be the Colts head coach a couple of years ago before having a change of heart.

Panthers | Week 17 final stats for Panthers    Sun Dec 29, 04:32 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen completed 25-of-41 passes for 295 yards, no touchdowns and one interception, while RB Christian McCaffrey rushed nine times for 26 yards and a touchdown while adding seven grabs for 72 yards on 10 targets. He became the third player in NFL history to post 1,000 rushing and 1,000 receiving yards in a single season. WR Brandon Zylstra stepped up with a team-high 96 receiving yards on six grabs across eight targets. WR Curtis Samuel finished up with two grabs for 13 yards, and TE Greg Olsen was limited to two catches for 12 yards.

Footballguys view: Allen decisively showed he is not the quarterback of the future for this team, but they needed him with rookie Will Grier hurt today. McCaffrey's milestone joins Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk and he'll be a unanimous #1 pick next year. Olsen has a retirement decision this offseason with Ryan Tannehill waiting in the wings.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey in line for big day?    Sat Dec 28, 08:28 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey is likely to receive the ball 'any way he can' in Week 17's game against the New Orleans Saints, according to interim offensive coordinator Scott Turner. McCaffrey is just 67 yards shy of becoming the third player in league history to reach 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards in the same season.

Footballguys view: Only Roger Craig and Marshall Faulk are in the 1,000/1,000 club. McCaffrey has always had the talent to reach that mark as well, and he's only 67 receiving yards away from doing that. We imagine the Panthers will feed him as much as possible in the season finale.

Smith (ankle), DT Gerald McCoy (knee), TE Ian Thomas (ankle), LB/DE Brian Burns (shoulder), DT Woodrow Hamilton (illness) and DT Kyle Love (ankle) practiced in full.

Footballguys view: Next year, McCaffrey will be the most unanimous #1 fantasy pick in over a decade.

Panthers | Greg Olsen limited    Wed Dec 25, 05:41 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Footballguys view: Olsen only caught a couple of passes from rookie QB Will Grier last week. We can't project him for much more production in Week 17, especially with the Panthers trying to get RB Christian McCaffrey the 67 receiving yards he needs to be only the third player in NFL history with a 1,000/1,000 season.

Panthers | D.J. Moore does not practice    Wed Dec 25, 05:37 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore (concussion) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Footballguys view: We don't think Moore plays in Week 17. The Panthers should have Curtis Samuel and Jarius Wright as their top receivers for the season finale.

Panthers | D.J. Moore out of practice    Tue Dec 24, 12:12 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore (concussion) was out of practice Tuesday, Dec. 24. He's unlikely to play in Week 17 after entering the concussion protocol Sunday, Dec. 22.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are likely to be without Moore in the season finale. He's been a fantastic receiver for them this year, catching 87 passes for 1,175 yards and four touchdowns (with four 100-yard games). The Panthers can turn to Curtis Samuel and Jarius Wright versus the Saints if/when Moore's officially ruled out.

Panthers | Will Grier to start again    Mon Dec 23, 04:48 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Will Grier will be the starting quarterback for the team's Week 17 game, according to interim head coach Perry Fewell.

Footballguys view: The Panthers new ownership wants to take a look at Grier again so they can make a determination on him for 2020. Grier struggled in his debut but should still continue peppering passes to RB Christian McCaffrey.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel totals four touches    Sun Dec 22, 05:07 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel posted two catches for 17 yards in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts while adding two runs for four yards.

Footballguys view: Samuel gutted out a game time decision but wasn't lifted by the installation of Will Grier at quarterback. He could be a 2020 breakout player if a healthy Cam Newton is the Week 1 starter.

Panthers | Greg Olsen posts pair of receptions    Sun Dec 22, 05:05 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen registered a pair of receptions for 33 yards on five targets in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts.

Footballguys view: Olsen might retire into the Monday Night Football booth or another TV job this offseason. He had some ceiling games this year but wasn't going to be part of any success stories with the Panthers turmoil at quarterback.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey busy as safety valve    Sun Dec 22, 05:01 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey rushed 13 times for 54 yards in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts while racking up 15 receptions for 119 yards on 15 targets.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey in the final three for fantasy MVP with Michael Thomas and Lamar Jackson, although he cost the most. He'll be the unanimous #1 pick next year as we watch to see who the Panthers will start at quarterback Week 1. It can't be worse than this year.

Panthers | Will Grier mistake-prone in first start    Sun Dec 22, 04:58 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Will Grier completed 27-of-44 passes for 224 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in Week 16 against the Indianapolis Colts in his first NFL start.

Footballguys view: Grier wasn't a total disaster, but he was close. The Panthers offense never really got going today after losing DJ Moore early and only moved the ball because they have Christian McCaffrey. The Saints defense will get to tee off on him in Week 17 if Perry Fewell puts him back out there.

Panthers | D.J. Moore will not return    Sun Dec 22, 02:11 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore (concussion) suffered a concussion during the Week 16 game and will not return.

Footballguys view: Moore had some extra risk because Will Grier got his first NFL start today. If that scared you off of him today, you dodged a bullet. Moore finishes with one catch for one yard.
