Panthers | Brandon Williams may be on bubble    Thu Sep 3, 04:52 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Brandon D. Williams (groin) may be on the roster bubble if he does not perform well during the final preseason game. Williams missed most of the preseason because of a groin injury.

Panthers | Corey Brown may be on roster bubble    Thu Sep 3, 04:45 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown could be on the roster bubble if he continues to struggle with dropped passes during the final preseason game. Brown dropped two touchdown passes over the last two games and dropped three passes in the last game.

Footballguys view: If you're not making an impact on this *M*A*S*H* unit of receivers and castaways, that's ugly. Suffice to say, Brown has little to no value in fantasy.

Panthers | Derek Anderson extended    Wed Sep 2, 01:03 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson signed a two-year extension Wednesday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Anderson gets a reward here to stay with the Panthers as their backup behind Cam Newton. He's a good reserve quarterback with a rocket arm and plenty of starting experience.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin put on IR    Tue Sep 1, 03:06 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: We expected this and as disappointing as it is, it's for the best. He should be ready for next year. Greg Olsen (TE1) and a hopefully healthy Devin Funchess (WR5) get a bit of a bump, while Cam Newton (low end QB1) is the guy who has taken a hit since the injury.

Panthers | Two WRs released    Tue Sep 1, 02:58 PM

Carolina Panthers WRs Jarrett Boykin and De'Andre Presley were waived Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: It's a pretty telling sign if you can't make a Panthers team that is desperate for wide receiver talent. Boykin continues to have issues catching on somewhere. He and Presley might have had some impact on this poor roster of wide receivers, but then again, it's a bad sign they were released in light of that fact.

Panthers | Jarrett Boykin cut    Tue Sep 1, 10:24 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Jarrett Boykin was released Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: Boykin will get some interest but getting cut from a team who is dressing food vendors and parking attendants as receivers is not a good sign.

Panthers | Kevin Norwood acquired    Mon Aug 31, 04:30 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Kevin Norwood was traded to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a conditional draft pick, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is a move that could help the Panthers. Norwood is a quick possession receiver with the hands and concentration to become a favorite target for Cam Newton. He'll first prove himself as a special teams player with the Panthers.

Panthers | Devin Funchess exits early    Mon Aug 31, 11:17 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) left practice Monday, Aug. 31, with hamstring tightness.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need to be incredibly cautious here. Funchess is set to be the team's WR1 now that Kelvin Benjamin has been lost for the year.

Carolina Panthers WR Paul Browning, WR Avius Capers, TE Dallas Walker and FB Lee Ward were released Sunday, Aug. 30.

Panthers | Corey Brown struggles with drops    Sat Aug 29, 09:13 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown dropped four passes during the preseason game against the New England Patriots Friday, Aug. 28. Three drops were on the same drive, which included a would-be touchdown on a deep ball and an end-zone target. Head coach Ron Rivera said Brown needed to stop putting pressure on himself to replace WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) after the game. 'To replace Benjamin is going to be a unit job, not a one-man job,' Rivera added.

Footballguys view: We're not sold on anyone in this Panthers passing game except for tight end Greg Olsen. Brown and Devin Funchess are not exciting options as pass-catchers. Fantasy owners should be avoiding this situation.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery injures groin    Fri Aug 28, 09:23 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery (groin) exited a preseason game against the New England Patriots Friday, Aug. 28, with a groin injury and will not return.

Footballguys view: Just what the panthers needed, another injury to a wide receiver. This isn't great news for Cam Newton's production, but it continues our belief that Greg Olsen will be a beast this season and a lock-down TE1. For what it's worth, Cotchery is a shaky WR7.

Panthers | Two defensive starters not playing    Fri Aug 28, 06:16 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Charles Johnson (calf) and DT Kawann Short (back) will not play in the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: Carolina is a solid defense, and should be a borderline No. 1 team defense in fantasy. These are just maintenance rests and shouldn't impact whether you grab this defense or not.

Panthers | Devin Funchess to miss game    Fri Aug 28, 06:15 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) is working out on the field before the third preseason game Friday, Aug. 28, but he will not be playing in the game.

Footballguys view: The Panthers' receiver issues keep getting worse. Hopefully this is precautionary and doesn't linger as right now Cam Newton has Greg Olsen and a bunch of guys. Expect big things from TE1 Olsen, but Newton is starting to feel like a QB2. At present he's a low-end QB1.

Panthers | Charles Johnson could play    Tue Aug 25, 11:53 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Charles Johnson (calf) could play in the third preseason game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: That's all good, but the team should just proceed with caution considering Johnson is one of their best defenders.

Charles Johnson player page

Panthers | Star Lotulelei should be ready    Tue Aug 25, 11:52 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Star Lotulelei (foot) is expected to be ready for the season opener.

Footballguys view: Getting the big man back in the middle will be a boost for the defense. Lotulelei is a mountain of a man, and his presence forces backs in another lane and into the waiting arms of linebackers like Thomas Davis and Luke Kuechly.

Panthers | Charles Johnson limited    Tue Aug 25, 11:37 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Charles Johnson (calf) was limited in practice Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Footballguys view: Johnson is an important part of what the team does defensively, so they'll be cautious with him in camp and the preseason.

Panthers | Devin Funchess limited Tuesday    Tue Aug 25, 11:36 AM

Panthers | Cam Newton has confidence in Devin Funchess    Mon Aug 24, 06:37 PM

Carolina Panthers rookie QB Cam Newton said he has full confidence in rookie WR Devin Funchess stepping into the starting wide receiver role for the Panthers with WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) out for the season. Funchess sat out the team's second preseason game with a tight hamstring, but he's expected to play against the New England Patriots Friday, Aug. 28. 'He's a competitor,' Newton said of the former Michigan star. 'He's a guy that wants to be great. We talk often. I'm pretty much a person that he can trust and that I know I can trust when the game comes on the line. We just need to get him to 100%.'

Footballguys view: That's great and all, but we don't share Newton's confidence. Funchess looked lost on the field sometimes in college, and he doesn't attack the ball in the air with authority the way that Kelvin Benjamin does. Over the last three years at Michigan, Funchess was credited with a whopping 20 drops. Good luck with that.

Panthers | Carolina HC confident in Devin Funchess    Mon Aug 24, 05:32 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess' (hamstring) football smarts will help alleviate his rookie learning curve, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera believes Funchess can fill in nicely for WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee), who is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Funchess said he won't be fazed by Benjamin's injury and that he's ready for an increased role.

Footballguys view: Awesome...too bad we don't share Rivera's confidence. Funchess is a big target, but he lacks the 'my ball' mentality that Benjamin has. He'll drop too many passes, and the rookie looked lost on the field at times during his college career at Michigan. Funchess may replace Benjamin in the lineup and in the gameplan, but he's not on the same level.

Panthers | Ryan Kalil has sprained knee    Mon Aug 24, 04:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers C Ryan Kalil (knee) has a sprained knee. Kalil will be evaluated next week.

Footballguys view: It sounds like Kalil avoided a serious knee injury. He's the best player on the offensive line, so expect Carolina to keep him out for the rest of the preseason. At this time, Kalil may be ready to come back for the Week 1 game against the Jaguars.

Panthers | Devin Funchess practices    Mon Aug 24, 02:56 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) practiced Monday, Aug. 24.

Footballguys view: The team is going to monitor Funchess closely as he comes back from this hamstring injury. With Kelvin Benjamin out for the year, Funchess will be tasked with being the team's top wideout in 2015.

Panthers | Ryan Kalil injures knee    Sun Aug 23, 09:37 AM

Carolina Panthers C Ryan Kalil (knee) suffered a knee injury during the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 22, but head coach Ron Rivera does not have any update on his status.

Footballguys view: Head coach Ron Rivera did not seem that concerned about Kalil's status, but it still stands that the reeling Panthers can not afford another blow to a key player. We'll be updating this situation as we learn more.

Panthers | Frank Alexander out for season    Sun Aug 23, 09:35 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Frank Alexander (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during the second preseason game Sunday, Aug. 22, and will miss the entire 2015 season.

Footballguys view: The hits keep coming for the Panthers, who hoped Alexander would play a big role on the defensive line this year. Second year end Kony Ealy will be put on the spot now with Alexander out. Charles Johnson is also nursing a calf injury in a situation to watch that could make things easier for the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 1.

Panthers | Cam Newton struggles Saturday    Sun Aug 23, 09:32 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton went 4-for-10 for 42 yards and one interception in the second preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Newton is going to be fighting an uphill battle all season unless Devin Funchess is a revelation and Jonathan Stewart can stay healthy under a feature back workload. He's near the bottom of the mid-low QB1 tier now.

Panthers | Richie Brockel sprains shoulder    Sat Aug 22, 09:25 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Richie Brockel (shoulder) left the preseason game against the Miami Dolphins Saturday, Aug. 22, with a left shoulder sprain and will not return.

Footballguys view: Brockel isn't fantasy relevant, as Greg Olsen is the guy to own here. Olsen is a sweet TE1, especially as the receiving options are few and far between. If you wait until Rob Gronkowski and Jimmy Graham are off the board while beefing up other areas, grabbing Olsen in the fifth is great value.

Panthers | Corey Brown has improved    Sat Aug 22, 02:32 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown has improved his route-running and has grasped the offense better this offseason.

Footballguys view: While he might see some more snaps and targets as the team redistributes to make up for Kelvin Benjamin's injury. We aren't bullish on Brown, so you should consider him as no more then deep bench depth if you think of him at all.

Panthers | Devin Funchess the new No. 1?    Fri Aug 21, 09:53 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess is the leading candidate to replace WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) as the X receiver, and head coach Ron Rivera said Funchess' high football IQ will ease the transition.

Footballguys view: With 20 drops over the last three years in college at Michigan, we're not seeing Funchess with the rosy glasses that Rivera is. The rookie has good size, but he doesn't win as many contested passes as he should. He could be a disappointing replacement for Kelvin Benjamin in 2015.

Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne having strong camp    Fri Aug 21, 05:08 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne has been having a strong training camp and could receive some carries this season. Artis-Payne has shown good power and agility during preseason games but averaged only 3.0 yards per carry in the first preseason game with four of his carries going for two yards or fewer.

Footballguys view: Artis-Payne was considered the most likely backup to Jonathan Stewart when he was drafted earlier this year. Brandon Wegher has been building some momentum, but consider Artis-Payne the handcuff to the oft-injured Stewart if you feel the need to handcuff.

Panthers | Cam Newton better with Kelvin Benjamin    Thu Aug 20, 02:58 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has completed 59% of his passes when WR Kelvin Benjamin has been on the field, with 16 touchdowns and nine interceptions, but only 55% when Benjamin has been sidelined with two touchdowns and three interceptions.

Footballguys view: This is why the news of Benjamin's lost season is devastating. Already considered a borderline QB1 this season, this injury, plus the nagging hamstring injury plaguing Devin Funchess really seem to pour cold water on Newton's value. He's still a borderline QB1, but it's tough to feel excited with this group of receivers and this offensive line. The only one coming off this disaster in good shape is tight end Greg Olsen, who continues to be a top five fantasy tight end.

Panthers | Ed Dickson seeing more looks    Thu Aug 20, 10:34 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Ed Dickson is receiving a few more looks in practice Thursday, Aug. 20.

Footballguys view: Dickson could become a bigger part of the offense with Kelvin Benjamin out for the season, but the athletically gifted tight end has been a disappointment since being drafted in 2010.

Panthers | Devin Funchess out of practice Thursday    Thu Aug 20, 09:08 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (hamstring) is out of practice Thursday, Aug. 20, with a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Just what the Panthers need....another WR down with injury. The team is going to turn to Funchess with Kelvin Benjamin out for the year. The rookie has size, and he may get used in the red zone quite a bit. We'll see if he can develop, but fantasy owners need to know that Funchess is much more raw than Benjamin was last year as a rookie.

Panthers | Time is now for Devin Funchess    Wed Aug 19, 10:20 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess is expcted to be on an expedited maturation process following the season-ending injury to WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee). He might not start immediately, but he is 6-4 and 232 pounds and that size will likely endear him to offensive coordinator Mike Shula, especially after the goal line.

Footballguys view: Funchess is a big target, but the rookie is raw at the position and he's not an explosive athlete. Concentration is an issue as Funchess was credited with 20 drops over the last three years in college at Michigan.

Link to story
Devin Funchess player page

Panthers | Greg Olsen to see more targets    Wed Aug 19, 10:19 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Greg Olsen is expected to be the No. 1 target for QB Cam Newton following the loss of WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) to a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Footballguys view: Olsen has to be the number one target for Newton now that Kelvin Benjamin is out for the year. Right now, Olsen's ADP doesn't truly reflect his status as the team's top target. Olsen is going off the board at TE4 (5.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Corey Brown could step up    Wed Aug 19, 10:16 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown, formerly known as Philly, could see an expanded role in the offense following the loss of WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee). However, he is expected to be rather inconsistent at times and he lacks the size that Benjamin has.

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Outside of Greg Olsen, we're not crazy about any asset in the Panthers passing game.

Panthers | Robert Meachem in Carolina plans?    Wed Aug 19, 09:52 PM

The Carolina Panthers might reach out to free-agent WR Robert Meachem (Saints) to provide depth to their receiving corps. He will still just be 31 in September, but he has managed only four touchdowns over the past three seasons.

Panthers | Brandon Lloyd to wear Carolina blue?    Wed Aug 19, 09:51 PM

Free-agent WR Brandon Lloyd (49ers) could be a player of interest for the Carolina Panthers. He made three starts in 14 games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2014. He led the lead with 1,448 receiving yards as recently as 2010, but he it is his only 1,000-yard season.

Panthers | Cats could bring in Santonio Holmes    Wed Aug 19, 09:48 PM

Panthers | Wes Welker on Carolina radar?    Wed Aug 19, 09:39 PM

Panthers | Reggie Wayne could be target    Wed Aug 19, 09:37 PM

Free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) could be a target for the Carolina Panthers. He struggled to make an impact in 2014 with the Indianapolis Colts, never seeming to make it all the way back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in October 2013. He will turn 37 in November.

Panthers | WR depth shaken up in Carolina    Wed Aug 19, 07:00 PM

Carolina Panthers WRs Corey Brown and Jerricho Cotchery are currently the top two wide receivers on Carolina's depth chart, according to Steve Reed of the Associated Press.

Footballguys view: Brown is a speedy guy who can get by defenders. Cotchery is the seasoned veteran who can be reliable underneath. We're not excited by either player's fantasy prospects. Without Kelvin Benjamin, we're avoiding players in the Panthers passing game except TE Greg Olsen.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin was big deep threat    Wed Aug 19, 05:50 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) led the Panthers with eight catches on throws over 20 yards downfield last year. The rest of the team had six such catches combined. Benjamin is out for the year with a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are in trouble here. They don't have anybody in place behind him that could take his role over. Last year, Benjamin was the 5th-most targeted player in the NFL. We think the Panthers will explore all options to find wide receiver help. That includes looking at free agent wide receivers and perhaps even exploring trade options.
