Panthers | Met with Xavier Grimble    Sun Apr 20, 10:57 AM

The Carolina Panthers met with Southern California TE Xavier Grimble.

Footballguys view: Grimble was a three-year starter at USC, but upon his exit of the program he blamed former head coach Lane Kiffin for his lack of a role on offense. He's not a move tight end, but he does have the strength and size to help out as an in-line tight end.

Panthers | Cam Newton still in walking boot    Sat Apr 19, 09:23 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) remains in a walking boot about a month after ankle surgery.

Footballguys view: The team is hopeful Newton will be ready to go for training camp. We should see him begin camp in a limited fashion as they get Newton ready for the start of the regular season.

Panthers | Might be interested in Sidney Rice    Mon Apr 14, 11:52 PM

The Carolina Panthers might show an interest in free-agent WR Sidney Rice (Seahawks), but only at the right price.

Footballguys view: Might?....Might? The Panthers NEED to show an interest in any wide receiver that would be an upgrade, and Rice would do just that. Right now a group consisting of Tavarres King, Marvin McNutt, Tiquan Underwood and Jerricho Cotchery doesn't exactly strike fear in the hearts of opposing defenses.

Panthers | Meeting with Robert Herron    Mon Apr 14, 06:08 PM

The Carolina Panthers are visiting with Wyoming WR Robert Herron Monday, April 14. The team worked him out back on April 3.

Footballguys view: Herron plays a lot like a younger version of former Panthers great Steve Smith. He's a fast player (4.3 40-yard dash) who disguises routes well. Herron can get release off the line of scrimmage in many different ways, and he'll quickly get into his route. He should go off the board in the second or third round.

The Carolina Panthers have met with Tennessee State OG Kadeem Edwards.

Panthers | No decision on Charles Godfrey    Sat Apr 12, 11:29 PM

The Carolina Panthers want to see how FS Charles Godfrey (Achilles') does in his recovery from an Achilles' tendon injury before deciding on his future with the team.

Footballguys view: The Panthers don't even have $500,000 in cap space at this time. They need to clear up some room just to sign the rookies they will draft. Godfrey could remain with the team but likely will not return with his $7.1 million salary cap figure for the 2014 season.

Panthers | Ed Dickson financials    Thu Apr 10, 04:20 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Ed Dickson will make the veteran minimum of $730,000 as part of his one-year deal with the team. He'll receive a signing bonus of $65,000. Dickson will likely be the No. 2 tight end behind TE Greg Olsen this year. Dickson had only 25 catches for 273 yards last year with the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: Dickson has a year to prove his worth to the Panthers and the league at large. Dickson is athletic and can split the seams but his hands can be inconsistent. With very few weapons besides himself and Olsen, he should get his chance to prove he can be more consistent.

Panthers | Sign Ed Dickson    Thu Apr 10, 02:46 PM

The Carolina Panthers have signed TE Ed Dickson (Ravens) Thursday, April 10.

Footballguys view: Greg Olsen will still be "the man" there but with the dearth of offensive weapons for Cam Newton to throw to, there may be plenty of opportunity for Dickson to make some plays. He flashed a few times for Baltimore but never quite consistently enough. He may get the chance as even if the Panthers grab a receiver with every pick in the draft, they will still need veteran players to step up.

Panthers | Will work out Kyle Fuller    Wed Apr 9, 04:35 PM

The Carolina Panthers are scheduled to conduct a private workout with Virginia Tech CB Kyle Fuller.

Footballguys view: Fuller is an option for the Panthers (and any team) in the first round. He's a big, physical cornerback who can regularly jam receivers at the line of scrimmage. Fuller would be a great fit for the Panthers defense.

Panthers | Ed Dickson visiting    Wed Apr 9, 02:04 PM

Free-agent TE Ed Dickson (Ravens) tweeted that he is flying out to visit the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are looking for better weapons in the passing game--and that includes tight ends. They have a poor group of wide receivers, but should add a top target in the draft. If added, Dickson would give them another target underneath to play in two-tight end sets with Greg Olsen.

Panthers | Jason Avant signs    Mon Apr 7, 06:34 PM

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent WR Jason Avant (Eagles) to an undisclosed one-year deal Monday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Another not-so-exciting wide receiver addition for the Panthers here. Even with Avant in the fold, they still have the league's most uninspiring group of receivers. Avant will compete for playing time as the team's second- or third-string receiver.

Panthers | Will meet with Jason Avant    Sun Apr 6, 09:26 PM

The Carolina Panthers are scheduled to meet with free-agent WR Jason Avant (Eagles) Monday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Avant has been most connected to the Chiefs where he would be reunited with former Eagles head coach Andy Reid. However, the Panthers must have interest. They have a poor group of wide receivers right now, and they need all the help they can get. Avant isn't much of an upgrade over guys like Jerricho Cotchery or Tavarres King.

Panthers | Antoine Cason feels he can start    Sat Apr 5, 11:41 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Antoine Cason said Saturday, April 5, that he feels reports of his diminished speed have been greatly exaggerated, and he can be a valuable contributor. 'I'm not done. I'm still a starter and I can show that,' Cason said. 'That was one of the things I continued to tell myself all year. Whenever I get my chance, I'm going to make the most of it.'

Panthers | Marqise Lee to visit    Fri Apr 4, 07:52 PM

Southern California WR Marqise Lee said he is scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers before the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all the wide receiver help they can get. They don't have much at the position right now even after adding both Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood in free agency. Drafting Lee in the second round would make a lot of sense.

Panthers | Interested in Brandin Cooks    Fri Apr 4, 07:51 PM

Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks said he has received interest from the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all the help they can get at wide receiver. They need better weapons around QB Cam Newton as their top two receivers at this time are Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood. That's not exactly Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker. Cooks is an elite talent who should be a first-round pick.

Panthers | Will work out Stephen Morris    Thu Apr 3, 01:48 PM

Panthers | Cam Newton doing well in rehab    Wed Apr 2, 02:34 PM

Bus Cook, agent for Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), said Newton is doing well in his rehab from offseason ankle surgery. Newton is expected to miss all of the offseason workouts but should be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Panthers here. The faster Newton can come back, the better it's going to be for their 2014 prospects. Newton will have a much different set of receivers to work with this year with Brandon LaFell, Ted Ginn and Steve Smith elsewhere. He needs to quickly establish chemistry with the new additions to the wide receiving corps.

Panthers | Will work out two Wyoming prospects    Wed Apr 2, 01:05 PM

The Carolina Panthers are scheduled to work out Wyoming QB Brett Smith and WR Robert Herron Thursday, April 3.

Footballguys view: Both of these players would be fine additions for the Panthers. Herron has a lot of Steve Smith (Ravens) to his game. He's a smaller receiver, but he's ultra fast, feisty and tough. The Panthers need WR help, and Herron would be a nice second-round pick. Smith has better athleticism than Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) and is an intriguing developmental prospect for any team looking for QB help in the mid-to-late rounds.

The Carolina Panthers attended the pro day of Central Arkansas SS Jestin Love's pro day Monday, March 31. Love had a 38-inch vertical jump, a 10-foot-3 broad jump and put up 22 repetitions on the 225-pound bench press.

Panthers | No meeting with Kenny Britt scheduled    Sun Mar 30, 11:59 PM

Free-agent WR Kenny Britt (Titans) recently said he may meet with the Carolina Panthers, but no visit has been scheduled at this time.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need to add wide receiver talent. They don't have a ton of talent at the position as Jerricho Cotchery and Tiquan Underwood are their most experienced receivers. Britt would help them if healthy and motivated.

Panthers | Not interested in Sidney Rice    Sun Mar 30, 11:57 PM

The Carolina Panthers have not expressed interest in free-agent WR Sidney Rice (Seahawks) at this point.

Footballguys view: The Panthers should express interest in any and all receivers on the open market. They have the worst (and least experienced) group of wide receivers in the league.

Panthers | Will not pursue DeSean Jackson    Sun Mar 30, 09:09 PM

Updating a previous report, the Carolina Panthers will not pursue free-agent WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles).

Footballguys view: Will they or won't they? We've heard conflicting reports over the last two days. With Jerricho Cotchery and Tavarres King as their top wide receivers, the Panthers have a great need at the position.

Panthers | Still want Charles Godfrey    Sun Mar 30, 03:01 AM

The Carolina Panthers want CB Charles Godfrey back for the 2014 season but not at the $7.1 million cap number he carries. Godfrey suffered an Achilles injury in Week 2 that prematurely ended his 2013 season, and his recovery from the injury will go a long way to figuring out his status on the team.

Panthers | Would be interested in DeSean Jackson    Fri Mar 28, 04:34 PM

Contrary to previous reports, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the team would be interested in free-agent WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles). 'We'd be interested. He's an intriguing player and we'll take a look at him,' Rivera said. 'I just got word and this is surprising to hear. He's an explosive player who has great vertical speed and is strong going to the ball.'

Footballguys view: This contradicts an earlier report from today. The Panthers should have interest in a talent like Jackson. They need a serious upgrade at the position, and Jackson would provide that.

Panthers | No interest in DeSean Jackson    Fri Mar 28, 01:54 PM

The Carolina Panthers do not have interest in free-agent WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles).

Footballguys view: The should have interest in Jackson. The Panthers have made a couple of moves at the wide receiver position (Jerricho Cotchery, Tiquan Underwood), but they still need impact players there.

Panthers | Expect to use option on Cam Newton    Tue Mar 25, 12:58 PM

The Carolina Panthers are expected to use the fifth-year option to lock up QB Cam Newton through the 2015 season. The Panthers are unlikely to get to the fifth year of Newton's contract as they continue to try to sign him to a long-term deal.

Footballguys view: In addition to locking him up for 2015, the Panthers should try adding some better weapons around him. It will be difficult to prove himself worthy of a new long-term contract if he's throwing to average talent. We'd like to see the Panthers add a couple of playmakers in the 2014 NFL draft.

Panthers | Ankle issue isn't new for Cam Newton    Mon Mar 24, 01:06 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) had been bothered by his ankle injury since his playing days in college, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton aggravated the injury in a Dec. 22 game against the New Orleans Saints last year.

Footballguys view: Newton is going to be recovering for most of the rest of the offseason. By the time training camp rolls around, Newton should be ready to resume practicing.

Panthers | Tiquan Underwood unlikely to be returner    Fri Mar 21, 11:37 PM

The Carolina Panthers will look to use WR Tiquan Underwood mainly as a wide receiver and not as a returner even though he has experience in that role.

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Underwood is a bench-caliber wide receiver, but he has ability as a return man. The Panthers still have serious needs at the position despite adding a couple of guys this week.

Panthers | Signing Joe Webb as QB    Fri Mar 21, 06:11 PM

The Carolina Panthers are signing free-agent WR Joe Webb (Vikings) to an undisclosed deal as a quarterback, according to a source.

Footballguys view: An interesting move for the Panthers here. Webb is big, strong and athletic. He also has a strong arm, but accuracy issues forced him into a position switch to wide receiver with the Vikings. Webb will compete with Derek Anderson to be the primary backup behind Cam Newton.

Panthers | Tiquan Underwood to compete for third WR spot    Fri Mar 21, 02:15 PM

Updating a previous report, the Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with WR Tiquan Underwood (Buccaneers) on a two-year contract Friday, March 21. Underwood is likely to compete for the third wide receiver position and on special teams as a kick returner.

Panthers | Sign Tiquan Underwood    Fri Mar 21, 01:12 PM

The Carolina Panthers signed WR Tiquan Underwood (Buccaneers) Friday, March 21. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Underwood is mostly a special teams player, but he'll get an opportunity to compete for playing time as a wide receiver in Carolina. He joins veteran Jerricho Cotchery at the top of the depth chart for the Panthers.

Panthers | Meeting with Tiquan Underwood    Thu Mar 20, 11:06 PM

The Carolina Panthers are meeting with free-agent WR Tiquan Underwood (Buccaneers).

Footballguys view: The Panthers need to add any and all wide receivers. At this time, the top two receivers on the depth chart are Tavarres King and Marvin McNutt.

Panthers | Could meet with Kenny Britt    Thu Mar 20, 09:38 PM

Pat Dye Jr., agent for free-agent WR Kenny Britt (Titans), said Britt could meet with the Carolina Panthers at some point.

Footballguys view: That sounds like a good idea for the Panthers. Britt has the talent to be a top wide receiver in the game. However, injuries and off field problems have held him back as a pro. Britt needs a change of scenery, and the Panthers need wide receiver help in a bad way.

Panthers | Will work out two WRs    Thu Mar 20, 09:08 PM

The Carolina Panthers are scheduled to work out free-agent WRs Lestar Jean (Texans) and C.J. Akins (Rams) Friday, March 21.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are looking for warm bodies. Akins and Jean are bodies who are warm. But neither one is really more than Spackle on the trashed quarter-panel of the car that is the Panthers passing offense.

Panthers | Check in on DeSean Jackson    Thu Mar 20, 08:06 PM

The Carolina Panthers have contacted the Philadelphia Eagles about the availability of WR DeSean Jackson.

Footballguys view: One would think the Panthers would be all over this since their best receiver is Jericho Cotchery. Cam Newton and DeSean Jackson would be great together--until D-Jack demanded a new contract mid-way through the current one.
