Carolina Panthers LB A.J. Klein (ankle) may have a chance to play in Week 17, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all hands on deck in Week 17. If they beat the Falcons, they win the NFC South and head to the playoffs.

Panthers | Cam Newton to start    Sat Dec 20, 02:46 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will officially start Sunday, Dec. 21, against the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: Newton truly is Superman. We'd expect his rushing attempts to be lower this week as he comes back from the back injury he sustained in a massive car wreck. Newton is still a low-end QB1 in Week 16.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to start    Fri Dec 19, 04:07 PM

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) has yet to officially be cleared to play in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns, but head coach Ron Rivera is 'very comfortable and confident' that Newton will start. 'Right now, everything is pointing in the right direction,' Rivera said. 'The reason I haven't said anything (definitive) is because of that one big thing, waiting for doctors to tell me they feel good about it.' Newton hasn't shown any signs of pain in practice this week.

Footballguys view: Check back on Sunday morning, but if Newton looks like your best QB for the championship, it looks like you'll have him available on Sunday.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams won't play    Fri Dec 19, 12:51 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) is questionable for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns, but he will not play in the game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Williams could be an emergency back this week.

Footballguys view: Jonathan Stewart owners get one last week of a feature back workload, and in a great matchup to boot. Consider him a strong RB2 against the Browns defense that Jeremy Hill ran all over last week.

Panthers | Cam Newton probable against Browns    Fri Dec 19, 12:49 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is listed as probable for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns.

Footballguys view: Newton will play, but the extent of his ability to run effectively is unknown. He's not an ideal option this week at quarterback.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams to wear cast    Thu Dec 18, 03:56 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) will be fitted cast that he can play with on his injured hand. Williams still has not caught a pass with the injured hand and pass protection could be a problem for him.

Footballguys view: Williams is likely out, and even if he plays we wouldn't go near him. He's at best an RB6 and that's not anything which should be in your lineup this week. Jonathan Stewart is a good low-end RB2 this week with some upside.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams limited    Thu Dec 18, 03:06 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) was limited during practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Footballguys view: He's likely not to go, but even if he does isn't worth the lineup spot. So we'd avoid him.

Panthers | Cam Newton fully practices    Thu Dec 18, 02:42 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 18, and appears to be on track to start in Week 16, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Looks like he is good to go, but keep in mind it's not an easy matchup. There is also the back injury. We see him as a QB2 this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton not dealing with pain    Thu Dec 18, 01:56 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) said he is not dealing with any pain in his back but is taking things one day at a time. Newton said he needs to be 100 percent before he can play.

Footballguys view: Newton has a lot against him this week, not the least of which would be his back issues. A lack of weapons, a poor offensive line and an occasionally tough Cleveland Browns defense make him no more than a QB2 this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track to start?    Thu Dec 18, 01:17 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) had an increased set of repetitions in practice Thursday, Dec. 18, and it looks like he's on track to play in Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns. Head coach Ron Rivera has yet to name Newton the starter, though, but he showed no signs of pain for the second straight day. Newton has been showing good velocity on his throws and hasn't had restrictions with his movement. QB Derek Anderson took second-team reps Thursday.

Footballguys view: We're still concerned about Newton for this weekend, and have him as a middle-of-the-road QB2. The injury, the lack of weapons and even the Cleveland defense give us some concern--added together Newton won't be his usual QB1 self.

Panthers | Cam Newton working with starters    Thu Dec 18, 12:30 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is working with the first-team offense during practice Thursday, Dec. 18.

Panthers | Cam Newton back at practice    Wed Dec 17, 01:12 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) returned to practice Wednesday, Dec. 17, and he worked with the second-team offense in the portion of practice open to the media. QB Derek Anderson worked with the first-team. Newton's status for Week 16 against the Cleveland Browns is uncertain right now, but he looked to be moving and throwing well Wednesday. He also ran and make some juke moves without difficulty.

Footballguys view: It looks like Newton could be back in action this week. Head coach Ron Rivera said he had hoped to make a decision on the starting QB early in the week.

Panthers | Horace Miller signs with Panthers    Wed Dec 17, 12:07 AM

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent LB Horace Miller (Seahawks) to the practice squad Tuesday, Dec. 16.

Panthers | Derek Anderson leans on Greg Olsen    Tue Dec 16, 06:39 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson had 15 passes of 10 or more yards in Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and six of Anderson's passes of 10 or more yards went to TE Greg Olsen, who had 10 catches for 110 yards in the game. Anderson tends to lean more on Olsen as he holds the ball longer in the pocket and goes through his progressions. Olsen had eight catches for 83 yards in Week 1 when Anderson started.

Footballguys view: Hey, we give it up to Anderson for his performances while Cam Newton has been out. When Anderson starts, he forces the ball to both Olsen and Kelvin Benjamin...and that's not a bad thing.

Panthers | Cam Newton may throw Tuesday    Tue Dec 16, 09:16 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) worked out on an underwater treadmill Tuesday, Dec. 16, and did some rational exercises. The team plans to have him attempt throws as well.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are going to keep monitoring Newton closely. There's no guarantee that he will start in Week 16. We could see Derek Anderson as the starter once again.

Panthers | Cam Newton's Week 16 status uncertain    Mon Dec 15, 01:17 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) will only start in Week 16 if the team believes Newton can protect himself during the game, according to head coach Ron Rivera. 'I don't want to put a guy out there that can't protect himself,' Rivera said. 'By that it's being able to run out of the way, scramble out of the way, stay alive, keep the play alive by being able to get away. That's all part of it. That's all part of the decision that went into the first Tampa Bay game.'

Footballguys view: Derek Anderson is a fine starter, and there's no need to rush Newton back until he's ready. The team has a rehab program for Newton, and his status will be determined based on if he can meet the rehab goals during the week.

Panthers | Cam Newton may play in Week 16    Sun Dec 14, 12:40 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) is considered day-to-day, but the team is optimistic about Newton's availability for Week 16, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Newton has the Browns next week, but if he has a good week of practice, he'll be a good boom/bust QB1.

The Carolina Panthers have declared OG Amini Silatolu, QB Cam Newton, OT David Foucault, RB DeAngelo Williams, CB James Dockery, DL Micanor Regis, SS Robert Lester inactive for Week 15.

Footballguys view: Derek Anderson gets the start, but you shouldn't be too worried about Kelvin Benjamin, as the duo riffed in Benjamin's first regular season game in Week 1 against the Bucs.

Panthers | Kevin Reddick added to roster    Sat Dec 13, 12:33 PM

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart enjoying expanded role    Fri Dec 12, 10:20 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hip) has averaged more than seven yards per carry in each of the team's last two games, and his 32 carries between those games are his most over a two-game stretch this year.

Footballguys view: Stewart has looked better with this expanded role. That being said, we still only trust him as a low-end RB2/flex play in Week 15.

Panthers | Probable status for Jonathan Stewart    Fri Dec 12, 05:05 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hip) practiced in full for the second straight day Friday, Dec. 12, and is probable for Week 15 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: Stewart will get the bulk of the work in the Panthers backfield, and Cam Newton's absence could make him the #1 option at the goal line. He's worth a look as your RB2 this week.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams doubtful    Fri Dec 12, 12:38 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) is doubtful for the team's Week 15 game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Jonathan Stewart owners can breathe easy. He'll start and get most of the carries for the second straight week.

Panthers | Cam Newton not worried about return    Thu Dec 11, 04:06 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) currently isn't concerned about whether he'll be able to return to action this season. 'As far as when I'm coming back, who cares,' Newton said. 'That's not something I'm worried about. I'm just thankful to have breath in my lungs so I can breathe again.' Head coach Ron Rivera said the best-case-scenario would be to have Newton back at practice next week, but there are no guarantees.

Footballguys view: Frankly, Newton has his priorities straight as far as we're concerned. He's lucky to be alive, forget walking away with some fractures in his back. While technically Carolina can still win the division, there is really no point in risking further injury for their franchise quarterback when the season is a lost one. We'd be shocked to see him play the rest of the year. Keep starting Derek Anderson--sign the kid from the "Play 60" commercial, just don't risk Newton's long-term health.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams unlikely to play    Thu Dec 11, 03:05 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) probably will not be able to play in Week 15, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: As we expected, this leaves Jonathan Stewart (not the Green Lantern from the Justice League cartoon, the other one) as a solid RB2. With Cam Newton likely out as well, Stewart might overplay that ranking as well.

Panthers | Thursday practice report    Thu Dec 11, 03:02 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back), OG Amini Silatolu (knee) and CB Carrington Byndom (illness) did not participate in practice Thursday, Dec. 11. WR Philly Brown (shoulder), C Ryan Kalil (non-injury), LB A.J. Klein (knee) and OG Chris Scott (foot) fully participated in practice.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart practices in full    Thu Dec 11, 03:01 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hip) fully participated in practice Thursday, Dec. 11.

Footballguys view: As we said earlier, we have Stewart as a solid RB2 this weekend against a terrible Buccaneers offense. With Cam Newton out, he could get an even bigger share this weekend. The one thing that trips this up is DeAngelo Williams. If Williams plays, Stewart's fantasy value goes down.

Panthers | Greg Olsen limited during practice    Thu Dec 11, 02:49 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Dec. 11.

Footballguys view: Olsen should be fine this weekend and a good start against a poor Tampa Bay team. The one downside is the presence of Derek Anderson under center, as that doesn't engender confidence. That said, Olsen is the most reliable weapon in the offense so he should still perform as a good TE1. Looking back at Week 1 (against Tampa and with Anderson starting), Olsen performed like a top-tier tight end.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams does some drills    Thu Dec 11, 02:39 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) was limited during practice Thursday, Dec. 11.

Footballguys view: While we think DeAngelo Williams may not even play this weekend, we like Jonathan Stewart a lot more. Stewart has the chance to be a very nice RB2 play this weekend against a poor Tampa Bay defense, and perhaps an even better play with Cam Newton out. If Williams plays, it throws a wrench into Stewart's playing time and potential.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart on injury report    Wed Dec 10, 04:46 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (hip) was limited in practice Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Footballguys view: Great....just what Stewart's fantasy owners don't want to hear. Stewart had a nice game last week, and he makes for a nice RB2/RB3/flex play in Week 15 versus the Buccaneers.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams not practicing    Wed Dec 10, 03:58 PM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (hand) is sitting out of practice Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Footballguys view: Anybody considering Jonathan Stewart as a starter in Week 15 should be watching Williams' practice status. If Williams is a scratch, then Stewart will have more fantasy value.

Panthers | Derek Anderson to start in Week 15    Wed Dec 10, 01:59 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Derek Anderson will get the start in the team's Week 15 game, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Newton's car wreck may knock him out for the rest of the season. Anderson has a rocket arm, but he does struggle with accuracy sometimes. We're expecting the game plan to include a lot of handing off. When Anderson does throw, expect him to lock onto TE Greg Olsen and WR Kelvin Benjamin.
