Panthers | Ron Rivera: Protecting Cam Newton vital    Fri Feb 15, 12:26 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton should be ready for training camp, head coach Ron Rivera said Friday, Feb. 15, on ESPN. Rivera also stressed the need to protect Newton better with the quarterback recently undergoing shoulder surgery, and the coach said the Panthers will use both free agency and the draft, if necessary, to shore up the team's offensive line.

Footballguys view: Rivera says this now that Newton is already hurt. The shoulder problems plagued Newton in 2018 and he certainly wasn't himself when he did play. Newton had shoulder surgery in January that actually revealed less damage than originally feared. The Panthers will ease him into action this offseason, likely some time around training camp.

Panthers | Cam Newton rehab update    Sat Feb 9, 11:42 AM

There is growing optimism that Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) may be able to participate in organized team activities in May, since his rehab from right shoulder surgery is going well, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Footballguys view: The original fear was that Newton might miss the entire 2019 season. That's long gone now and things continue to get more optimistic about Newton's return. Even if he can physically participate in OTAs this spring, we expect the Panthers to limit their superstar quarterback.

Panthers | Cam Newton admits he was limited    Thu Feb 7, 01:02 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) on Thursday, Feb. 7, unveiled a YouTube video channel containing a post about his late-January arthroscopic procedure on his throwing shoulder. In the post, Newton says he couldn't throw the ball 30 yards late in the season, but was determined to keep playing. 'I felt like defenses were exposing me because I couldn't throw the ball down field,' Newton said in the video post. 'Not being in a position physically to be able to make the throws that you know you're capable of making, that was the disheartening thing of the whole year.''

Footballguys view: There's nothing to admit, everyone who watched Newton this year could tell something was bothering him. After surgery on his shoulder, Newton should be better in 2019. The Panthers will wisely ease him into any sort of action this offseason, likely waiting until training camp to get him on the field.

Panthers | Greg Olsen plans to play    Tue Feb 5, 06:41 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) intends to keep playing despite dealing with a nagging foot issue that resulted in two surgeries last season.

Footballguys view: Olsen can still be an effective starter (and quality fantasy asset) when healthy. He's rehabilitating his foot every day trying to get back to full health. The veteran tight end has two years remaining on his contract.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said he's greatly increased his range of motion in his throwing arm since undergoing surgery a week ago. He expressed his relief in his bothersome shoulder ailment being fixed. Newton is expected to make a full recovery in time for training camp.

Footballguys view: So far so good in the news about Newton's surgery. We'll be monitoring this closely and share Newton's relief that the issue was surgically repaired instead of just rested in the offseason.

Panthers | Cam Newton feeling good    Wed Jan 30, 07:50 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said his surgically repaired shoulder is feeling good.

Footballguys view: This is good news, but inconsequential until we see him on a field, which probably won't happen until the open of training camp at the earliest. The Andrew Luck saga has taught us to pay attention to everything, so this is still worth noting.

Panthers | Surgery for Cam Newton    Thu Jan 24, 04:54 PM

Footballguys view: Newton was beat up in the 2018 season and missed two games as a result. Some speculate that Newton may need to take a year off to truly get healthy but a timetable for his return was not disclosed. This surgery was minor so now reports speculate that he'll be ready for the 2019 season. We'll know more about his status as his recovery rolls on.

Panthers | Devin Funchess not expected back    Sat Jan 19, 03:24 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent WR Devin Funchess likely will not re-sign with the Panthers this offseason because of WR D.J. Moore's performance during the second half of the season.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick of the Panthers in 2015, Funchess has been overshadowed by younger and more explosive talent at the position like Moore. In 2018, Funchess played in 14 games nabbed 44 passes for 549 yards and four receiving touchdowns. There should be a market for his services, just not a white-hot market in our opinion.

Panthers | Cam Newton in danger of missing 2019?    Tue Jan 15, 08:19 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is not guaranteed to play at all in 2019 as the team considers all of its options regarding his injured shoulder. Per ESPN.com's David Newton, the organization has been in discussions with medical personnel on the best plan to strengthen the shoulder - whether that's with rest or another surgery.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation closely as the offseason rolls along. A surgery opens the possibility Newton could miss a season - just as Andrew Luck did in 2017 - after undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder.

Panthers | Surgery for Cam Newton?    Tue Jan 15, 05:46 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton's (shoulder) offseason recovery remains unclear as team owner David Tepper admitted he has 'no idea' if Newton will have surgery.

Footballguys view: Newton is going to try and rest the shoulder to get back to full strength...or at least as close to full strength as he can. He's had shoulder surgery before and needs to be healthy in order to perform at his best. We give him a ton of credit for his toughness, but playing with this shoulder injury has not lead to the best production (or wins) for the veteran quarterback.

Panthers | Thomas Davis wants to return    Wed Jan 9, 06:45 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis said he wants to return for one more year season with the team next season. He added, 'I understand that there's a whole business side of things that has to take place. My whole mindset and everything I want to do is totally surrounded in coming back and playing here. Hopefully, they share that same sentiment.'

Footballguys view: When you think of the Panthers defense, it's difficult not to think of Davis. A first-round pick out of Georgia in 2005 for the Panthers, Davis has been a cornerstone of their defense. He's not the same player he used to be, but Davis still wants to play and could be one of those players the Panthers don't want to play for anyone else. Davis is among 19 players on the team set to become unrestricted free agents this offseason.

Panthers | Julius Peppers' future uncertain    Tue Jan 8, 02:28 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers is planning on taking a 'couple of weeks' to decide if he wants to return next year, according to a league source, who also claims Peppers' decision is '50-50.'

Footballguys view: Peppers is not the player he used to be but he could stick around in the league as a part-time pass rusher. His 5.0 sacks in 2018 were the lowest since an injury shortened 2007 with the Panthers. We expect Peppers would have some interest if he decides to keep playing in 2019.

Panthers | Ron Rivera will remain as head coach    Sun Dec 30, 07:25 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera will return to the team as head coach for the 2019 season, a source familiar with the situation said Sunday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: The Panthers had an epic collapse after starting the season 6-2 and then bad went to worse when Cam Newton's shoulder troubles surfaced again. The team basically had two seasons, one that pointed to better times ahead and one that pointed to a dark time for the franchise. Rivera will get another chance, but getting Newton's shoulder right will be the biggest story of the offseason.

Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen completed 16-of-27 passes for 228 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 17 game against the New Orleans Saints in his first NFL start.

Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Friday, Dec. 28. The team also signed practice squad OG Dorian Johnson to the 53-man roster. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Panthers are looking at a backfield featuring Cameron Artis-Payne and Travaris Cadet in Week 17. Barner was picked up off waivers from the Patriots back in mid-November. He'll be hard pressed to find steady work next year coming off this knee injury. Barner is an unrestricted free agent in 2019.

Carolina Panthers QB Christian McCaffrey (not injury related) practiced in full for a second straight day Friday, Dec. 28 and he is off the injury report for Week 17 against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: It's hard to know if the Panthers will fully or partially rest McCaffrey after he played an inordinate number of snaps this year. He's a risky play in a week of uncertainty.
