Panthers | Taylor Heinicke to get a look at QB2?    Sat Aug 17, 02:13 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Taylor Heinicke could be thrust back into the mix for the No. 2 quarterback job after completing 8 of 12 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown against the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 16, in the opinion of ESPN's David Newton. Newton cites the struggles of QBs Will Grier and Kyle Allen, as well as Heinicke's familiarity with offensive coordinator Norv Turner, as reasons for Heinicke's possible ascent.

Panthers | Cam Newton to sit out    Fri Aug 16, 04:46 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will not play in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Newton has reworked his throwing motion to reduce the torque on his shoulder. The team doesn't want to have Newton get banged up in a meaningless game. We'll see if he plays later in the preseason.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel causing coverage issues    Thu Aug 15, 04:08 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel has been 'practically impossible to cover' in training camp, according to Brendan Marks of the Charlotte Observer. Head coach Ron Rivera said Samuel is 'light years ahead' of where he has been in past training camps.

Footballguys view: Samuel could make a leap this year, and Fantasy GMs can scoop him up at a good value -- for now. He had one touchdown every six touches in 2018, and he is looking for a larger role in 2019. Samuel is a mismatch every time he's on the field and one of the most explosive players in the game today. He's got a current ADP of WR38 (8.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to play Friday    Wed Aug 14, 04:32 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is expected to receive playing time during the preseason game Friday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: Newton did not play in the preseason opener for the Panthers but he'll get a bit of action this week. We don't expect him to see more than a series or two. Then we'll see more from Kyle Allen and Will Grier.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel primed for big year?    Mon Aug 12, 02:07 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel 'might be the player who's taking the biggest step forward' and may be 'primed for a breakout third year in the league,' according to MMQB's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: Samuel has been developing as more than a gadget player with the Panthers over the last couple of seasons. We are excited to see what the playmaker has in store this season. Samuel is a high-end WR4 with upside for Fantasy GMs this year.

Panthers | Cam Newton making changes    Thu Aug 1, 12:22 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has been working on tweaking his throwing motion and making other changes to his routine to better his chances of remaining healthy. 'It's still a work in progress,' Newton said Thursday, Aug. 1. 'One thing I wanted to work on was just being honest with myself. Knowing when to sit out of practice and working on my body. I'm as hungry as ever. But guys that are on board on offense need me to be my best self.'

Footballguys view: Newton's new throwing motion is more compact and hopefully going to cut down on the torque with his shoulder when he throws. He's been working on changing it all offseason long and he's in the process of getting better with the new motion.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey to play less in 2019?    Mon Jul 29, 02:13 PM

Panthers | Curtis Samuel praised for route-running    Mon Jul 29, 02:08 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel is 'becoming an outstanding route runner,' according to offensive coordinator Norv Turner.

Footballguys view: Samuel has been rounds behind DJ Moore in ADP even though their production was similar down the stretch last year and the draft capital expended wasn't that different. The steady drumbeat of these kinds of news items could change that.

Panthers | Two cleared to practice    Sat Jul 27, 06:54 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Torrey Smith (knee) and LB Jermaine Carter (knee) were removed from the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 27, and participated in practice.

Footballguys view: Smith is fighting for a roster spot after taking a pay cut, so getting off of PUP is very important for his prospects. Carter is in a battle for playing time replacing Thomas Davis, who is now with the Chargers.

Panthers | Cam Newton a full go    Thu Jul 25, 11:12 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) threw without any limitations during practice Thursday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Newton's recovery is going well, and unless things change he (like so many other quarterbacks) looks like a value at ADP.

Panthers | Greg Olsen will not be limited    Wed Jul 24, 07:43 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) said he will not be limited during training camp.

Footballguys view: Olsen could end up being Cam Newton's favorite target and return top 5-6 tight end scoring at a deep discount. He's a great target if you are waiting to take a tight end until most other teams have their starter.

Panthers | Daryl Williams will be on field    Wed Jul 24, 05:37 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Torrey Smith (knee), LB Jermaine Carter (knee) and LB Brandon Chubb (knee) will start training camp on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to general manager Marty Hurney.

Footballguys view: Smith already had to take a pay cut to stay on the roster. If he has trouble getting or staying on the practice field, it might be curtains for him.

Carolina Panthers C Matt Paradis (leg) will not open training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list and will be a full participant during practice.

Footballguys view: This is great news, and the team might not miss a beat after the retirement of Ryan Kalil. The line should be in good shape going into the season.

Panthers | Brian Burns agrees to terms    Wed Jul 24, 03:01 PM

Carolina Panthers first-round draft choice DE/LB Brian Burns agreed to terms on a four-year contract with the Panthers Wednesday, July 24, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal includes a fifth-year option.

Panthers | Cam Newton on a pitch count    Wed Jul 24, 01:57 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be on a pitch count in training camp, but he avoided the Physically Unable to Perform list. 'It's going to be structured around our installation. So based on the things that we have as far as going in with our install will dictate what he does,' head coach Ron Rivera said. 'All of his reps will be monitored, they'll be scripted out, and we'll just follow that pattern as we go through it.'

Footballguys view: That sounds about right. Newton has changed his throwing motion to reduce the amount of torque on his shoulder. We'll see if these steps help him stay healthy in 2019. Don't expect to see a lot of Newton in the preseason, so stay tuned to the reports coming out of training camp.

Panthers | Jordan Scarlett best backup option?    Mon Jul 15, 02:55 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jordan Scarlett slipped to the fifth round in the 2019 NFL Draft due to character concerns from his time at the University of Florida. However, beat writer Brendan Marks suggest Scarlett might be the most talented tailback to back up starting RB Christian McCaffrey.

Footballguys view: Scarlett is a hard-charging back at 5'11" 208 pounds. He's incredibly strong and is not afraid of contact. Scarlett does a good job of making defenders miss in tight quarters and he does have good footwork to help him change direction. He is not a receiving option whatsoever and had some of the worst hands of any running back in this draft class.

Panthers | Carolina to give Christian McCaffrey help?    Mon Jul 15, 02:48 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey might see a little more help in the backfield, as head coach Ron Rivera searches for a secondary runner. '(McCaffrey) him touching the ball was no concern,' Rivera said. 'It was just the extra plays. So we have to look at that and find a way to take that load from him.'

Footballguys view: McCaffrey should touch the ball as much as possible, but a breather from time-to-time would be nice. The team re-signed RBs Cameron Artis-Payne and Elijah Hood, they drafted RB Jordan Scarlett, signed Elijah Holyfield as an undrafted free agent and have RB Reggie Bonnafon in the mix as well. We'll watch this backup running back situation shake out in training camp.

Panthers | Taylor Heinicke leading QB2 race    Wed Jul 10, 01:56 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Taylor Heinicke was more impressive than QBs Will Grier and Kyle Allen this spring, according to the Charlotte Observer's Brendan Marks, who predicts Heinicke will open the 2019 season as the backup with Grier in the third spot. Marks believes the team will try to stash Allen on the practice squad, but other teams could be interested.

Footballguys view: Heinicke has always had talent as a passer, mostly his touch and accuracy on short-to-intermediate throws. We don't think he holds off the rookie Grier for that long, and we'll be watching both closely in the preseason. Grier is a player we have a lot of appreciation for in dynasty formats. Heinicke has backup written all over him, while Grier has the upside to one day be a starter (and maybe a good one) in the future.

Panthers | Cam Newton to be full go at camp    Tue Jul 9, 10:38 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is slated to be a full participant when training camp opens July 24. Newton struggled with soreness and tightness in his right shoulder stemming from scar tissue and cartilage damage that built up after his surgery for a torn rotator cuff.

Footballguys view: It's been all good news for Newton during this offseason. Newton had the shoulder cleaned out in the offseason and it was revealed the cartilage damage was much less severe than anticipated. He's changed his throwing motion in an effort to be less stressful on the joint. If healthy, Newton is a low-end QB1 for Fantasy GMs. His current ADP is QB11 (9.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Brian Burns to battle for time    Tue Jul 2, 10:31 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Brian Burns will battle LB Bruce Irvin for playing time in the team's 3-4 alignments. Irvin's experience gives him the edge, but Burns had possibly the fastest get-off time in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Burns is a younger (and perhaps much better) version of Irvin. A first-round pick out of Florida State in the 2019 NFL draft, Burns was known for his burst and speed as an EDGE defender. He can simply run around most players tasked with blocking him and has a variety of pass-rushing moves. The Panthers often rotate their pass rushers which limits the upside for the rookie in 2019.

Carolina Panthers QB Kyle Allen looked comfortable in the offense and looked like a more confident player during spring practices, according to Max Henson of Panthers.com.

Panthers | Greg Olsen locked in    Thu Jun 27, 09:56 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen set personal records in the weight room during the offseason strength program, and he made 'difficult catches look routine' during spring practices, according to Max Henson of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: Olsen has always been on the same page with Cam Newton and he's by far the longest tenured pass catcher in the offense. If you decide to take an aging tight end who might not last the season as your TE1, Olsen is the one to target.

Panthers | Rashaan Gaulden pushing to start    Thu Jun 27, 09:52 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Rashaan Gaulden has put himself in position to start at free safety after a strong showing in spring practices, according to Max Henson of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have a fantastic front seven and two young aggressive corners. Gaulden could be set up for fantasy success in big play leagues roaming the back of the defense.
