Panthers | Might keep four tight ends    Fri Aug 29, 11:38 PM

The Carolina Panthers are deep at tight end, with starting TE Greg Olsen and reserve TEs Ed Dickson, Brandon D. Williams and Richie Brockel projected to make the final 53-man roster. In fact, if they keep four tight eneds, it would likely mean they keep eight offensive linemen instead of nine.

Panthers | Mike McNeill might be cut    Fri Aug 29, 11:37 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Mike McNeill (knee) has been slowed by a nagging knee injury, and TE Brandon D. Williams has emerged as a solid player in training camp and the preseason, making McNeill expendable.

Panthers | Might not be settled at WR    Fri Aug 29, 11:36 PM

The Carolina Panthers will keep six wide receivers with WRs Jason Avant, Kelvin Benjamin, Brenton Bersin, Philly Brown, Jerricho Cotchery and Tavarres King as the projected members of the 53-man roster. The team could still look to pick up a receiver or kick returner off waivers after the final roster cuts Saturday, Aug. 30.

Panthers | Joe Webb no longer expendable    Fri Aug 29, 11:30 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Joe Webb looked expendable until QB Cam Newton (ribs) suffered a fractured rib in the third preseason game. Now, head coach Ron Rivera appears fairly adamant the team will keep three quarterbacks until it is clear Newton is healthy, and maybe longer.

Panthers | Cam Newton expects to play    Thu Aug 28, 12:47 AM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) said Wednesday, Aug. 27, that he will be ready for the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite fracturing his ribs last week. 'There's no doubt in my mind,' Newton said.

Footballguys view: The ribs will be a long term concern as they are the sort of thing which can linger and cause issues down the road. However, we're happy to see that he will be ready to go Week 1. We have him as a borderline QB1 because of the issues at wide receiver, but his ability to run with the ball and overall skills make him a guy who will be able to overcome his surroundings and put fantasy points on the board.

Panthers | Cam Newton expect to be ready    Thu Aug 28, 12:47 AM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) said Wednesday, Aug. 27, that he will be ready for the regular season opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite fracturing his ribs last week. 'There's no doubt in my mind,' Newton said.

Footballguys view: Good news for Newton owners. There have been some concerns because of both the ribs and the lack of proven receivers. We still have him as a fringe QB1 as we believe he has the talent to overcome his surroundings. His ability to run the ball adds to his value as well.

Panthers | Cam Newton won't be limited    Wed Aug 27, 05:09 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ribs) will not be running a limited offense due to his rib injury. The team will still run the zone read.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need to say that to deny the Bucs a tactical edge of not having to prepare for the zone read, but the Panthers would be smart to limit Newton's exposure so early in the season when he is not 100%.

Panthers | Greg Hardy will dress for game    Wed Aug 27, 02:05 PM

Panthers | Cam Newton will be ready    Wed Aug 27, 12:33 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (rib) said he fully expects to be ready to play Week 1.

Footballguys view: The Panthers may choose to call someone else's number at the goal line while Newton heals. He probably is not a good play with a brand new offensive line and set of receivers in week 1 at Tampa.

Carolina Panthers DEs Greg Hardy (shoulder) and Charles Johnson (hamstring) will not play in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 28, against the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera added that they should be ready for the regular season opener.

Footballguys view: We will see several starters sit in the final week of the preseason. The Panthers need these two to get ready for the start of the regular season. The final preseason game is mainly for guys on the roster bubble.

Panthers | Cam Newton has fractured rib    Sun Aug 24, 04:54 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (rib) has a hairline fracture in one of his ribs and will not play in the final preseason game next week.

Footballguys view: The team will have to be careful here. Rib injuries come down to pain tolerance, so Newton will have to grin and bear it while he's recovering. Head coach Ron Rivera said he thinks Newton will be ready for Week 1.

Panthers | Eight players cut    Sun Aug 24, 02:37 PM

The Carolina Panthers have released P Jordan Gay, DL Linden Gaydosh, DL Alex Hall, OL Oscar Johnson, LB Anthony Morales, WR Marvin McNutt, WR Kealoha Pilares and DL Craig Roh.

Footballguys view: McNutt might be able to find a spot on a practice squad somewhere. He's a big, physical receiver who can work as a red-zone threat. It's not a good sign that he couldn't make a WR-needy Panthers roster.

Panthers | Toney Clemons cut    Sun Aug 24, 02:01 PM

The Carolina Panthers have released WR Toney Clemons.

Footballguys view: Clemons was an intriguing prospect in super deep dynasty leagues when he came out of Colorado in 2012. If he can't make a WR-needy Panthers team, then it's time for fantasy owners in such leagues to move on.

The Carolina Panthers cut WR Tiquan Underwood Sunday, Aug. 24, according to a league source.

Panthers | Cam Newton undergoes X-rays    Sat Aug 23, 12:11 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (back) suffered a back contusion during the third preseason game, but X-rays on the back came back negative, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Rivera is confident that Newton will be fine, and fantasy owners should share that confidence. The Panthers' offense lacks weapons in the passing game, so Newton's numbers could fall in 2014. Right now, Newton is getting drafted at QB10 (8.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker in good shape    Tue Aug 19, 10:22 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker appears to be in good shape for winning a spot on the 53-man roster after the team traded RB Kenjon Barner to the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, Aug. 19.

Footballguys view: As with all of the Panthers backs, it is just about impossible to attain consistent weekly value, but Whittaker is a good all-around back who will help in case Jonathan Stewart can't stay healthy.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin being prepped as No. 1 WR    Fri Aug 15, 05:47 PM

Carolina Panthers rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin is being prepped as the team's No. 1 wide receiver in practices. 'We've done some things defensively to put him in situations where he's being jammed, where he's being pressed, he's being doubled, he's being rolled to,' head coach Ron Rivera said. 'He's going to have to get used to it.' Some were worried whether Benjamin would struggle with his route running at the NFL level, but wide receivers coach Ricky Proehl said Benjamin is more than capable. Benjamin has developed good chemistry with QB Cam Newton off the field, and the team hopes it'll carry over to game situations.

Footballguys view: We're hearing nothing but good things about Benjamin out of Panthers camp. He's a big bodied receiver with a large wingspan and the ability to play above the rim. Right now, fantasy owners see Benjamin as WR39 (9.01) in 12-team PPR leagues. His ADP has risen almost two rounds over the last month.

Panthers | Cam Newton not at 100 percent    Fri Aug 15, 05:20 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle), who is expected to play a quarter in his first preseason action against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, Aug. 17, said he still is at less than 100 percent healthy. "The thing that keeps coming back up is, 'Keep treating it. Treat it when it feels good, treat it when it feels bad. Don't be that guy that only treats it when it's nagging. Try to stay ahead of the pain,'" Newton said. "That's what I've been doing, and it's been paying off." Head coach Ron Rivera said the team will not run any read-option plays against the Chiefs this weekend. Newton took part in every drill in practice Thursday, Aug. 14, and Rivera was encouraged by Newton's performance in the hurry-up offense.

Footballguys view: This ankle injury is something to keep an eye on. Newton should be closer to 100 percent than he is right now according to our very own Dr. Jene Bramel. We'll see if he looks okay in limited preseason action this week.

Panthers | Cam Newton update    Thu Aug 14, 05:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton will play at least a quarter in the team's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs Sunday, Aug. 17, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: They'll ease him in. The team isn't just concerned now with the receivers but a shaky offensive line. He won't spend much time behind a line which is letting him get hurt. Newton's situation has hurt his stock a little bit but he's still a QB1, although as lower end one than he was last season.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to play first quarter of preseason game    Thu Aug 14, 03:49 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) is expected to play in the first quarter of the team's second preseason game.

Panthers | Cam Newton running read option in practice    Mon Aug 11, 12:49 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (ankle) tucked the ball on a read option in team drills Sunday, Aug. 10, and also made a nice run to the right side after being cleared to play in the team's second preseason game this weekend. Head coach Ron Rivera said Newton and the other starts will likely play longer than normal in the second preseason game because they play on the road against the New England Patriots five days later.

Footballguys view: There is still a belief in the air that Newton's use as a rusher, including at the goal line, will decrease again this year. With his up and down weekly scoring profile and the possibility of a long year behind an offensive line that disintegrated this offseason, Newton's stock has lost its luster.

Panthers | DeAngelo Williams leaves briefly    Mon Aug 11, 10:46 AM

Carolina Panthers RB DeAngelo Williams (groin) left practice briefly Monday, Aug. 11, with what was believed to be a groin injury. He has returned to the field.

Footballguys view: The last thing Carolina needs is more injuries at the running back position. Jonathan Stewart is already dealing with a hamstring injury, and they lost rookie running back Tyler Gaffney to a season-ending knee injury (and to the Patriots on waivers).

Panthers | Top two RBs will play    Sun Aug 10, 10:17 PM

Carolina Panthers RBs Jonathan Stewart (hamstring) and RB DeAngelo Williams will play in the second preseason game.
