Panthers | Seth Lobato invited to minicamp    Mon May 2, 02:52 PM

Free-agent QB Seth Lobato (Buccaneers) was invited to the Carolina Panthers' minicamp.

Footballguys view: Lobata is one of those early cards you get for your Madden Ultimate Team, so you know he's just a camp arm. He is an athletic quarterback, but the chances of him making the Panthers final roster are slim.

Panthers | Six UDFAs agree with Panthers    Sun May 1, 12:02 PM

The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent FB/TE Andrew Bonnet (North Dakota State), S Jeremy Cash (Duke), WR Keyarris Garrett (Tulsa), RB Devon Johnson (Marshall), WR Jenson Stoshak (Florida Atlantic) and TE Jake McGee (Florida) on undisclosed deals.

Footballguys view: Garrett is a long receiver with deceptive speed and game in the air. It was surprising to see him go undrafted. Johnson is a smashmouth power back who could win a role in a running game that uses multiple backs. McGee and Cash were also among the top UDFAs, carrying draftable grades on most boards. The Panthers had the best UDFA haul of any team.

The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent LB Jared Norris (Utah) on an undisclosed deal Saturday, April 30.

Panthers | Carolina works to fill secondary void    Fri Apr 29, 10:33 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected CBs Daryl Worley and James Bradberry in the second and third rounds of the 2016 NFL draft, as they attempt to replace CB Josh Norman, now with the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Bradberry is a raw kid with great upside while Worley has great ball skills but mediocre speed.

Panthers | Vernon Butler expected to make impact    Fri Apr 29, 05:42 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Vernon Butler will be part of the defensive tackle situation and is expected to make an impact as a rookie, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: They could use some help shoring up the middle of the defense and Butler is going to walk right into a lot of responsibility from the moment he shows up at the facility.

Miami Dolphins DT Robert Thomas was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers Friday, April 29.

Panthers | Vernon Butler goes to Panthers    Thu Apr 28, 11:34 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Louisiana Tech DT Vernon Butler with the 30th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Butler is a big, power guy who runs to the ball and who can rush the passer. The Panthers continue to put together an outstanding defense.

Panthers | Star Lotulelei has option picked up    Tue Apr 26, 10:43 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Star Lotulelei had his fifth-year option exercised Tuesday, April 26.

Footballguys view: A great move for the Panthers here. Picking up the option will cost the team $6.7 million...a price easy to pay for one of the best in the league at his position. Expect the Panthers to now try and lock up fellow DT K.K. Short with a long-term deal.

Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne arrested    Mon Apr 25, 04:46 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne was arrested Sunday, April 24, for speeding and reckless driving. He was driving 102 miles per hour in a 65 miles-per-hour zone. Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, however. Artis-Payne was arrested on an unsecured $5,000 bond and only spent about 30 minutes in jail.

Footballguys view: This is a minor incident, and we don't think speeding...even speeding THAT much...will draw discipline from the NFL. However, with Roger Goodell you never know.

Panthers | Thomas Davis progressing with arm    Mon Apr 25, 03:41 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (arm) said his arm is doing really well, adding that he's excited about where he is now as opposed to where he was a few weeks ago.

Footballguys view: He's one of the toughest players in the league and one of our long-time favorites at linebacker. Davis broke his forearm in the NFC Championship and underwent surgery the following day. The Panthers should take it easy on him as he continues his recovery.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin should be ready for camp    Mon Apr 25, 01:49 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) should be a full participant when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Panthers offense here. They made it to Super Bowl 50 last year without Benjamin, and his presence in the big game (and all season long) was sorely missed. He's a favorite target of Cam Newton, and Benjamin is a threat in the red zone because of his size and ability to box out smaller defenders.

Panthers | Josh Norman tried to sign tag    Mon Apr 25, 02:01 AM

Washington Redskins CB Josh Norman reportedly contacted team officials of the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, April 20, in an attempt to sign his franchise tag, according to a league source with knowledge of the situation. It was too late, as the team had already notified the league it was rescinding his tag.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to be at OTAs    Thu Apr 21, 01:23 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera expects QB Cam Newton to be on the field for the start of organized team activities Monday, April 25.

Footballguys view: It's going to be a long season for Newton, who had an awful interview after his Super Bowl loss and has been dissected since. He's going to be under an intense spotlight and how he handles it will mean everything to the Panthers' chances to make a repeat appearance. We're hoping for the best, but concerned the pressure could get to him.

Panthers | Bene Benwikere should be ready    Thu Apr 21, 01:19 PM

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin will be limited in OTAs    Thu Apr 21, 11:29 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) will participate in organized team activities, but he'll be limited.

Footballguys view: This was a very effective offense without him, so imagine what it could look like when Benjamin is there. We think he's at least a solid WR2, but he has the upside to maybe creep into WR1 territory.

Panthers | CAR didn't want short Josh Norman deal    Thu Apr 21, 11:23 AM

Updating previous reports, free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) had the franchise tag rescinded because the team became uncomfortable signing him to a one-year deal and didn't believe he'd sign a long-term pact, according to general manager Dave Gettleman. 'The more we thought about it, the more flexibility that $14 million would give us,' Gettleman said.

Footballguys view: There has to be more to this, otherwise the move would have been made long before now. That $14 million isn't as valuable when there isn't much to spend it on.

Panthers | CAR door not closed on Josh Norman    Thu Apr 21, 11:15 AM

Free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) doesn't have the door closed to him if he wants to re-sign, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: It would have to be at the right price, and given what his camp is talking about, we wonder what that would look like. It wouldn't be bad to bring back a guy who helped you get to the Super Bowl, though.

Panthers | Josh Norman deal was not close     Wed Apr 20, 05:37 PM

Updating a previous item, Free-agent CB Josh Norman's (Panthers) desired long-term deal was not attainable, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Likely he wanted money out of wack with what the position pays for in free agency. We'll see where he lands but can we start a Kickstarter to get the New York Giants to sign him and make him room with Odell Beckham Jr?

Panthers | Josh Norman becomes free agent    Wed Apr 20, 05:30 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Josh Norman's franchise tag offer was rescinded Wednesday, April 20. He is now a free agent.

Footballguys view: Norman might want some of that sweet, sweet quarterback money. He's also not the easiest guy to deal with. The Panthers are being a bit risky, letting go of a guy who helped carry them to a Super Bowl appearance, but they also won't break the bank for a corner.

Panthers | Josh Norman not close to extension    Mon Apr 18, 07:44 PM

Carolina Panthers franchise free-agent CB Josh Norman is not close to reaching an agreement on a contract extension, according to a source. The Panthers have yet to come close to even matching this year's tag number, which is $13.952 million in 2016. Manager Dave Gettleman said the team is 'very comfortable' letting Norman play under the tag this year.

Footballguys view: Both sides continue to talk, but nothing is expected to heat up until after the draft. Norman has no current plans to hold out of training camp if a long-term deal isn't reached by July 15.

Panthers | Josh Norman hasn't signed tender    Mon Apr 11, 12:34 PM

Carolina Panthers franchise free-agent CB Josh Norman has yet to sign the franchise tag, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: He's unlikely to be with the team at the start of organized team activities if he hasn't signed by April 25, because Norman won't be under contract.

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) has his arm sling off and said he's working on his range of motion after shoulder surgery in February.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly on schedule    Thu Mar 31, 07:58 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) said he is on schedule in his rehabilitation process. Kuechly is six weeks removed from surgery to repair a shoulder injury. He is no longer in a sling and is gradually gaining strength and range of motion back in his shoulder. Kuechly also said he's been riding a bicycle a lot and doing lower body work, adding that it's going to be a gradual process to get back to full health by training camp.

Footballguys view: Kuechly is the heart of this defense, so it's vital and critical the Panthers get him healthy. It looks like he will be back in time for the heavy lifting in camp, though expect the team to be cautious with him. There's no need to push a veteran too hard and risk a setback.

Panthers | Brandon Boykin joins Carolina    Mon Mar 28, 01:04 PM

Free-agent CB Brandon Boykin (Steelers) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 28. Financial terms of Boykins' deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Boykin is a good slot corner who should make it onto the field when the Panthers use a nickel package. Boykins' signing likely won't affect franchise free-agent CB Josh Norman, who has yet to sign his tender and is looking for a long-term deal.

Panthers | Josh Norman could play under tag    Tue Mar 22, 06:14 PM

Carolina Panthers franchise free-agent CB Josh Norman could play under the franchise tag this year, and general manager David Gettleman said he is fine with that.

Footballguys view: The two sides are far apart on talks for a long-term contract extension for four years, according to league sources. We're not worried about it....it's March and they have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal.

Panthers | Josh Norman hasn't signed tag    Mon Mar 21, 08:05 PM

Carolina Panthers franchise free-agent CB Josh Norman has yet to sign his franchise tag, according to a league source. The Panthers have until July 15 to sign Norman to a long-term deal, and the two sides remain far apart.

Footballguys view: Deals get done at deadlines. There's no reason for Norman to sign his franchise tag right now. We think in mid-July, the two sides should be able to come together on a new deal.

Footballguys view: His pro career fell off track during his time with the Falcons, but the Panthers felt he could play a role for them. Soliai will likely be a rotational run-stuffer for the Panthers defense in 2016.
