Panthers | Two Panthers set free    Fri Feb 12, 08:59 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Jerricho Cotchery and SS Roman Harper's contracts voided Thursday, Feb. 11, and it's unclear if either will continue playing. Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman added three voidable years on the contracts for Harper and Cotchery when he signed them two years ago to spread out their bonus money and lessen the salary cap hit.

Footballguys view: The Panthers will carry a combined $2.25 million in dead money for Harper and Cotchery on the 2016 books. We could see both veterans land somewhere else, but don't expect the market to be white-hot for their services.

Panthers | No talks for Mike Tolbert yet    Tue Feb 9, 03:54 PM

Carolina Panthers FB Mike Tolbert said there have been no contract talks with the Panthers yet. Tolbert already said he would like to return to Carolina next season. He may be asked to restructure his current deal, which stands at $3.4 million.

Footballguys view: They don't have to rush things here. Tolbert is a valuable fullback who wants to stay with the team. The math is pretty easy, and we have confidence they'll find a way to get things done.

Panthers | Jerricho Cotchery wants to stay    Tue Feb 9, 03:12 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent WR Jerricho Cotchery wants to play for Carolina next season.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine a market that is white-hot for Cotchery's services. The Panthers could keep him around for a good price if they want to keep him. We feel that Cotchery is going to stay with the Panthers.

Panthers | Mike Tolbert wants to return    Tue Feb 9, 12:11 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent FB Mike Tolbert said he would like to return in 2016, and he thinks he has another four or five years left to play at a Pro Bowl level.

Footballguys view: We could see Tolbert playing for a few more seasons (at least) with the Panthers. He's a powerful blocker, decent runner and receiver out of the backfield. Tolbert fits nicely into what Carolina wants to do on offense.

Panthers | Cam Newton reacts to fumble    Tue Feb 9, 11:05 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he didn't dive after a second-half fumble in the Super Bowl because of the way his leg was positioned. 'I don't dive on one fumble because the way my leg was - it could have been (contorted) in a way,' Newton said. 'OK, you say my effort. I didn't dive down. I fumbled. That's fine. But we didn't lose that game because of that fumble. I can tell you that.'

Footballguys view: That fumble by Newton essentially sealed the victory for the Broncos, but the Panthers were struggling to move the ball anyway. Sure, Newton could have dived on the ball but there's no guarantee he would have come up with it...especially if there was a nasty scrum on the ground.

Panthers | Greg Olsen held in check    Mon Feb 8, 02:48 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen had four catches for 41 yards Sunday, Feb. 7, in Super Bowl 50. The Denver Broncos were efficient at shadowing Olsen on midrange routes. 'They did a nice job with Greg,' Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula said. 'He's so talented in the passing game, but we were in a lot of long yardage. They can kind of focus on him and do different things.'

Footballguys view: That's a bit of a surprise for the Broncos defense which is historically bad against opposing tight ends.

Panthers | Kony Ealy ties Super Bowl record    Sun Feb 7, 11:27 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Kony Ealy tied a Super Bowl record with 3.0 sacks in a 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos Sunday, Feb. 7. He also had an interception.

Footballguys view: Ealy is the only player in Super Bowl history to have at least one sack and one interception in the big game.

Panthers | Cam Newton held out of end zone    Sun Feb 7, 11:00 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton completed 18 of 41 passes for 265 yards and an interception and carried six times for 45 yards in a 24-10 loss to the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: The Broncos defense was all over Newton in Super Bowl 50. He lost two fumbles and looked uncomfortable for most of the night.

Panthers | Corey Brown out with concussion    Sun Feb 7, 09:37 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown (concussion) has been ruled out for the remainder of Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos Sunday, Feb. 7, with a concussion.

Footballguys view: The Panthers were up against a ferocious Broncos defense, and losing Brown didn't help. The hard-hitting Broncos defense made a huge statement in largely shutting down the league's best offense.

Panthers | No limitations for Thomas Davis?    Sun Feb 7, 01:38 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) isn't expected to be limited in Super Bowl 50, according to head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion. Davis will wear a pad on his arm but he will not wear a cast.

Footballguys view: It's simply amazing that he's going to be able to play with this injury. Davis is a bad ass, and he's certainly proving that by playing in the Super Bowl...doctors think what he's doing is near superhuman.

Panthers | Cam Newton takes home some hardware    Sat Feb 6, 10:06 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was named the 2015 NFL Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year Saturday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Newton certainly deserved both awards as he was the best player in the NFL this year. The supporting cast in Carolina's offense isn't as good as it could be, and Newton was able to bring out the best in the guys around him.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton reached 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns in the NFC Championship Game, making him only the fourth quarterback in league history to reach the Super Bowl with that many scores. Surprisingly, the three previous quarterbacks to have at least 50 combined passing and rushing touchdowns entering the Super Bowl all lost the game, by a combined 60 points.

Panthers | Jared Allen to start Sunday    Fri Feb 5, 04:36 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Jared Allen (foot) will start Super Bowl 50 on Sunday, Feb. 7, according to head coach Ron Rivera, after sitting out the NFC Championship Game.

Footballguys view: Allen has a chance to get a ring in his first Super Bowl, and late in his career. The Panthers have needed him after suffering multiple injuries at defensive end. He'll get a chance to set his sights on an especially immobile Peyton Manning.

Panthers | Carolina efficient in red zone    Fri Feb 5, 04:05 PM

Panthers | Cam Newton good in play action    Fri Feb 5, 02:12 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton had nine touchdowns on play-action passes this year, which was second to only New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (10). The Denver Broncos allowed just 87 play-action pass attempts this year (second-fewest), 54% completion percentage on those plays (ranked second) and just two touchdowns (tied for second-fewest).

Footballguys view: The Broncos are tough to establish the run against, so play action doesn't exactly work the same against them as it would against less stout run defense. The Panthers have the advantage of Cam Newton's running ability giving the front seven something to think about on every running play, so they could be more off balance on Sunday.

Panthers | Thomas Davis expected to start    Fri Feb 5, 12:50 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) is expected to start in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Ron Rivera. 'Yes, yes I do (expect Davis to start) based on everything I'm seeing from him right now and what the doctors have talked about -- they talk about him every day and we go over everything he's done and what they're seeing. That's been a huge plus.' Rivera said. 'He actually took a shot in the arm yesterday and said 'I'm fine. That felt pretty good.''

Footballguys view: Davis has overcome three ACL tears. Whatever limitations this injury puts on his abilities should be balanced out by the intensity of the moment and medicine/equipment to allow Davis to operate the way he normally would on the field.

Panthers | Super Bowl practice report for Thursday    Thu Feb 4, 07:36 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Jared Allen (foot) and LB Thomas Davis (forearm) participated fully in practice Thursday, Feb. 4.

Footballguys view: Both are playing in the Super Bowl, but they might be on limited snap counts based on these injuries. Allen may be a part-time pass-rusher for the Panthers, while Davis might get a few snaps off here and there.

Panthers | Greg Olsen excels on deep passes    Thu Feb 4, 01:25 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen has 22 receptions on passes thrown between 15 and 30 yards downfield in 2015 (including playoffs), the most since New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski and former New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham each had 21 in 2011.

Footballguys view: Olsen is going to get a lot of attention from Denver this weekend but you can expect him to get his no matter what. Olsen is Cam Newton's biggest weapon, and if he's successful the Panthers should be as well.

Panthers | Thomas Davis, Jared Allen on track    Thu Feb 4, 12:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) and DE Jared Allen (foot) remain on track to play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos after both practiced Wednesday, Feb. 3. Allen was limited, but the move was precautionary, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Davis was a full participant and wore a protective cast over his arm. Rivera said Davis will have his arm looked at by doctors again Friday, Feb. 5, but his full practice load was an indication he'll play.

Footballguys view: Sounds good for both guys and once you get them on the field it's going to be tough to get them out of the game. It's the Super Bowl of course.

Panthers | Mike Tolbert wants to return    Thu Feb 4, 01:04 AM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent FB Mike Tolbert is hopeful Super Bowl 50 Sunday, Feb. 7, against the Denver Broncos is not his last with the team. 'We'll take of all the business aspects of my contract after the season. I would love to stay, but you never know what happens. We'll see,' Tolbert said Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Footballguys view: Tolbert is a solid back but limited in overall ability. He's been useful in this offense though, so for the right price we imagine he'll be back.

Panthers | Cam Newton excellent in red zone    Tue Feb 2, 05:30 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has a 105.6 passer rating and has posted a 39:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio in the red zone since 2014. He's thrown 26 red zone touchdowns this year without a single interception. The Denver Broncos ranked 20th in red zone efficiency in 2015, with 22 touchdowns allowed in 37 red zone possessions.

Footballguys view: The headline should just read; Cam Newton Excellent. Going up against the Broncos defense is going to be tough, but we have a feeling Newton will find a way to make plays with his arm and legs.

Panthers | Carolina an offensive juggernaut    Tue Feb 2, 05:28 PM

The Carolina Panthers have scored 30-plus points in eight of their last nine games (including the playoffs) and are averaging 36.1 points and 385.3 total yards in that span under offensive coordinator Mike Shula.

Footballguys view: It's interesting to note that with all these head coach openings, Shula would not get a sniff. The Panthers have outscored their opponents 266-121 in the first halves of games in the regular season. They outscored the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals by a combined margin of 55-7 in the playoffs, and they have seven touchdowns and two field goals in 13 first-half possessions.

Panthers | Thomas Davis using hard brace    Tue Feb 2, 12:20 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) was using a 'hard brace' instead of a cast on his broken right arm in practice Monday, Feb. 1, and thinks he might play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos while wearing it.

Footballguys view: Davis won't be a 100 percent against the Broncos, but that's not going to keep him off the field. Range of motion could be an issue with the brace, but we can still see Davis making big plays in Super Bowl 50.

Panthers | Jared Allen says he's ready    Tue Feb 2, 08:31 AM

Carolina Panthers DE Jared Allen (foot) practiced Monday, Feb. 1, and said he's 100% ready to play in the Super Bowl. 'I feel great,' Allen said. 'Honestly, I feel, hopefully, I'll be a tremendous factor in this game. So, as far as physically, 100% ready to go, just preparing like normal.'

Footballguys view: We can't believe Allen is actually going to play with this severe foot injury, but hey...guys have played in the Super Bowl with a broken leg (Jack Youngblood anyone?). He'll be on the field as a part-time pass-rusher against the Broncos.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart back to practice    Mon Feb 1, 04:40 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankle), who missed practice all of last week, was back on the practice field Monday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have kept Stewart out of action so that he could be as close to full strength as possible. The Broncos rush defense is incredibly strong, so we're not expecting much out of Stewart in Super Bowl 50.

Panthers | Thomas Davis may be limited    Mon Feb 1, 04:40 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) said he could be limited in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, but he has every intention of playing in the game. He returned to practice and used a cast Monday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: The injury won't keep him off the field, but he may not get his normal amount of snaps. We'll know more about his playing status later in the week.

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (rest) and RB Mike Tolbert (knee) did little-to-no work at practice Friday, Jan. 29, but RB Fozzy Whittaker (ankle) returned to practice.

Footballguys view: The duo has some time to rest before things ramp up. Super Bowl 50 features the Panthers going up against a tough Broncos run defense. We're not expecting a ton from either back, and there's a chance that QB Cam Newton could finish the game as the team's leading rusher.

Panthers | Corey Brown fully practices    Thu Jan 28, 06:21 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown (ankle) participated fully in practice Thursday, Jan. 28.

Footballguys view: The Panthers want all hands on deck next week, and the strength of the passing offense comes from the variety of players they can use (along with Cam Newton's unreal abilities). Brown is coming off a huge day and while we won't bet on him replicating that, we do think he will have a big part of the offense.

Panthers | Cam Newton improved from pocket    Thu Jan 28, 05:33 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton has improved as a pocket passer since his rookie season in 2011. In his first year, he had 20 touchdowns and 16 interceptions from the pocket, compared to 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions from the pocket in 2015. Newton has 21 touchdowns and two interceptions from the pocket in the last 10 games.

Footballguys view: Newton has adapted his skills to the game he has to play, but has not sacrificed what has made him special in terms of his mobility and fearlessness. In fact, his ability in the pocket has made him that much more dangerous.

Panthers | Cam Newton to struggle passing?    Thu Jan 28, 04:11 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was second in the NFL with 10 games of 100+ passer rating in 2015, while the Denver Broncos did not allow a single 100+ rating to any quarterback.

Footballguys view: We all know how tough the pass defense of the Broncos is and that the panthers lack big time wide receivers this season, so this isn't a shock. Still, Newton is able to add value by running the ball as well and the advantage of having more than one target (albeit more than one mediocre target) is that he can go anywhere and the defense has to take all the options seriously.

Panthers | Thomas Davis optimistic    Thu Jan 28, 03:22 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) said he's still looking forward to playing in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos despite breaking his forearm in the NFC Championship. 'A plate and probably around 11 or 12 screws in my arm right now,' Davis added. 'It is what it is.' Thomas didn't practice Wednesday, Jan. 27, or Thursday, Jan. 28, but it looks like he'll still be able to play in the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: We don't know how effective he will be if he plays, given the injury. You can't blame him for not wanting to miss the game though, even if his participation is limited.

Panthers | Carolina leans on ground game    Thu Jan 28, 12:46 PM

The Carolina Panthers and QB Cam Newton ran the ball by design on 46% of their offensive plays this year, which was highest in the NFL. The Denver Broncos allowed just 3.28 yards per rush in 2015, which was the fewest in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Newton is very hard to stop once he gets going, so why not take advantage of it? His mobility will be a key in how Super Bowl 50 plays out.
