Panthers | Curtis Samuel ready for next step?    Fri Jun 14, 09:25 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel has been the 'MVP' of minicamp, according to Brendan Marks of the Charlotte Observer. 'His catch radius I think has improved,' head coach Ron Rivera said. 'I just think his overall game has improved.'

Footballguys view: Pay attention to this type of drumbeat in the offseason. Samuel is a dangerous player who can make big plays with his speed and quickness after the catch. If the Panthers truly tap into his potential, then Samuel is a player Fantasy GMs are going to clamor for. He had only 47 touches in all of 2018, but he scored 7 touchdowns (5 receiving, 2 rushing), giving him a touchdown in every 6 touches. We're excited to see what he could do this year.

Panthers | Ian Thomas could be ready for camp    Fri Jun 14, 08:38 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Ian Thomas (leg) hopefully will be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The plan was for Thomas to be ready at some point in training camp. Whether or not he's ready to go right off the bat is undetermined at this time. Thomas should be fine for Week 1 of the regular season, and he's a valuable reserve tight end behind Greg Olsen. Thomas showed last year, when Olsen was out in Week 13 to Week 17, that he could be the tight end of the future. During that time, he caught a total of 25 passes for 246 yards and two touchdowns.

Panthers | Cam Newton has new throwing motion    Wed Jun 12, 09:21 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is using a new throwing motion in hopes of preserving his shoulder for the long haul. 'Making him a little more compact in his upper body. A little more closed off, just so he's not as open throwing the ball. And just to make him as efficient as possible and putting the least amount of stress possible,' quarterbacks coach Scott Turner said Wednesday, June 12.

Footballguys view: The work on Newton's passing motion began last year when Turner cleaned up Newton's footwork. They also worked to have Newton get rid of the ball quicker when things weren't open deep. Newton's completion percentage jumped to a career high 67.9 percent (his career average was around 59 percent). Now, the team is keeping his upper body compact to prevent unnatural movement or over-torque on his shoulder. Newton insists the motion is not that different, and we'll see if it helps his shoulder stay healthy in 2019.

Panthers | Mose Frazier waived from IR    Wed Jun 12, 08:05 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Mose Frazier (undisclosed) was released from the Reserve/Injured list Wednesday, June 12, after the two sides agreed to an injury settlement.

Panthers | Aldrick Robinson suffers injury    Wed Jun 12, 05:25 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Aldrick Robinson (leg) suffered a leg injury during practice Wednesday, June 12.

Footballguys view: It's being reported as a hamstring injury. The 30-year old veteran wide receiver is a long-shot to make the roster.

Panthers | Carolina signs Sione Teuhema    Tue Jun 11, 08:24 PM

Panthers | Cam Newton throws in minicamp    Tue Jun 11, 01:50 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) threw to stationary targets Tuesday, June 11, during the team's minicamp practice. It was the first time Newton has thrown passes publicly since undergoing shoulder surgery in January. 'If you go back and look at a lot of things that happened before he started having shoulder issues, you can see the improvement, you can see the footwork, you can see the whole development of him,'' coach Ron Rivera said. 'As the shoulder started to go, then you saw everything fall by the wayside. Now you get an opportunity to go back, rework those things, do the things he needs to do to improve. He's done a great job.'

Footballguys view: Another day and more positive news about Newton here. A healthy Newton is a dangerous Newton and a player Fantasy GMs want to add in drafts of all formats. Newton has QB1 upside but is currently going off the board in the mid-QB2 tier. If he performs well in the preseason, we could see his ADP climb into the low-end QB1 range.

Panthers | Cam Newton to do plenty of throwing    Sat Jun 8, 11:55 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will throw in all quarterback drills during the team's upcoming mandatory minicamp.

Footballguys view: It was reported a couple of weeks ago that Newton had begun throwing a regulation size football. This is another great sign for Newton's recovery. They'll put him through a bunch of work in minicamp and get him ready for training camp. Newton has stated that he's not going to change his playing style, and with a ton of weapons around him, he could post QB1 numbers once again in 2019. He finished as the No. 14 fantasy QB in 2018 and is currently going off the board around QB12.

Panthers | Carolina wins Gerald McCoy sweepstakes    Mon Jun 3, 05:53 PM

Free-agent DT Gerald McCoy (Buccaneers) reportedly agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers on an undisclosed contract Monday, June 3.

Footballguys view: Details of that contract are now in. McCoy reportedly agreed to terms on a one-year contract worth $8 million, according to Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, who adds the contract can max out at a reported $10.25 million with incentives. ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the signing bonus will be $4 million. McCoy stays in the NFC South where he can play his former team twice a year. He should be a good fit for the Panthers defense and then get to hit the open market again in 2020.

Panthers | Pay cut for Torrey Smith    Thu May 30, 10:18 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Torrey Smith has agreed to take a $2 million pay cut, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith was on the books for $5 million in 2019 with zero in dead money. Now he's going to make $2 million as a base salary with another $1 million in bonuses. Smith can still get by a defense in a hurry but likely won't be more than a deep threat for the Panthers offense in 2019.

Panthers | Cam Newton starts to throw    Thu May 30, 08:44 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) has started throwing a regulation-size football as part of his rehab, according to a source.

Footballguys view: He's getting back to some normalcy and Newton has already said that he's not going to change his playing style. That's great if he stays healthy, and Fantasy GMs know that's the biggest concern with the veteran passer. Newton is currently going off the board at QB12 (9.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton absent    Tue May 28, 09:58 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton is absent from organized team activities Tuesday, May 28, in what has been deemed a personal day.

Footballguys view: Just a personal day means no big deal here. Newton underwent shoulder surgery in January and wants to resume throwing before training camp. He has suffered no setbacks during his recovery but the Panthers are wisely being safe during his return.

Panthers | Carolina interested in Gerald McCoy    Sat May 25, 08:24 AM

The Carolina Panthers are interested in meeting with free-agent DE Gerald McCoy (Buccaneers).

Footballguys view: To go to a division rival of his old team might be sweet for McCoy, but it might also be conflicting. McCoy has said he wants to go to a Super Bowl contender, so we'll be watching to see if he gets their stamp of approval. The Panthers have resources tied up at defensive tackle with Kawaan Short's big contract, plus Dontari Poe and 2016 first rounder Vernon Butler, but the Panthers passed on Butler's fifth-year option earlier this offseason.

Panthers | Chris Hogan playing well    Fri May 24, 11:55 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Chris Hogan has been 'making plays' down the field during OTAs, according to Bryan Strickland of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: Hogan could make Torrey Smith look very overpriced at five million dollars if he impresses enough to win the #3 wide receiver job. He is signed for a fraction of the price at only 1.45 million dollars with a max value of two million.

Panthers | Ian Thomas does not practice    Wed May 22, 06:44 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Ian Thomas (leg) did not participate in practice Wednesday, May 22, because of a sore leg.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Indiana last year, Thomas filled in nicely for an injured Greg Olsen. As a rookie, Thomas had 36 catches for 333 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Olsen has been cleared from the foot injury that cost him much of the 2018 season, so Thomas goes back to being a backup with Olsen healthy. We still have a lot of love for him in dynasty formats.

Panthers | Greg Olsen fully cleared    Wed May 22, 12:48 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) said he has been fully cleared Wednesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: When healthy, Olsen is still their top tight end and a low-end TE1 for Fantasy GMs. Olsen battled through foot injuries last year and only made it through nine games. He hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2016, and we'll see if he can get back to doing that during his age 34 season.

Panthers | Mose Frazier suffers broken arm    Tue May 21, 04:56 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Mose Frazier (arm) broke his arm during an organized team activities session Tuesday, May 21, and is reportedly undergoing surgery, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Frazier was a long-shot to make the 53-man roster and this injury won't help his cause. No word yet on how long Frazier's recovery will be after he undergoes surgery.

Panthers | Terry Godwin makes early impressiong    Fri May 17, 09:59 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Terry Godwin 'seemed to catch everything thrown his way' during rookie minicamp, according to Bill Voth of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: Godwin was a seventh-round pick for the Panthers in the 2019 NFL draft. Coming out of Georgia, Godwin did some good things in the pre-draft process. He was outstanding out the East-West Shrine Game practices and is one of the most natural receivers in his class. Godwin is not the biggest receiver and will struggle against more physical coverage. However, he is fluid in his routes and has soft hands and good concentration. We'll monitor him in deep dynasty formats.

Panthers | Aldrick Robinson signs with Panthers    Fri May 17, 11:17 AM

Free-agent WR Aldrick Robinson (Vikings) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, May 17. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: This is Robinson's fifth stop in the NFL, and he is joining a cramped WR room in Carolina. Robinson can get deep for big touchdowns but is going to have a tough road just to make the 53-man roster with the Panthers.

Panthers | Carolina picks up Temarrick Hemingway    Tue May 14, 05:23 PM

Free-agent TE Temarrick Hemingway (Broncos) was claimed off waivers by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday, May 14.

Footballguys view: Hemingway has bounced around a bit in the pros, mainly in the AFC West. He's super athletic for a tight end and plays like a super-sized wide receiver. Hemingway is a long-shot to make it with the Panthers.

Panthers | Carolina swaps out tight ends    Mon May 13, 03:21 PM

Panthers | Will Grier catching on fast    Sun May 12, 08:33 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Will Grier 'seemed to be picking things up really quickly' during rookie minicamp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Grier is a mature prospect with the upside to develop into a quality starter one day. The Panthers will use him as a primary backup to Cam Newton in 2019 provided that Grier continues to impress. We love his mindset, skill set as a passer and upside in dynasty formats.

Panthers | Cam Newton not changing style    Fri May 10, 08:14 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said he is too old to change his playing style.

Footballguys view: Newton just turned 30 so this is an apt comment. It's both good and bad news for fantasy as he's going to continue to put his body at risk to gain yards and fantasy points on the ground, but he'll also be prone to taking hits on the shoulder that let him down and had to be surgically repaired again this offseason.

Panthers | Carolina signs several rooks    Thu May 9, 08:08 PM

Carolina Panthers OLB/DE Christian Miller, RB Jordan Scarlett, OG Dennis Daley and WR Terry Godwin signed their four-year rookie contracts Thursday, May 9. Financial terms of the deals were undisclosed. Carolina also officially signed undrafted free-agent S Corrion Ballard, RB Elijah Holyfield, WR Damion Jeanpiere Jr. and LB Jordan Kunaszyk to undisclosed contracts.

Footballguys view: Scarlett and Holyfield are both good runners between the tackles and they will battle for the #3 spot, with an inside track to the backup spot behind Christian McCaffrey currently occupied by Cameron Artis-Payne.

Panthers | Will Grier inks rookie deal    Thu May 9, 05:26 PM

Carolina Panthers third-round QB Will Grier (West Virginia) signed a four-year contract worth $3.852 million Thursday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Grier is a quarterback we love to add in dynasty formats. He's clearly behind Cam Newton on the depth chart, so his landing spot could've been much better, but we love Grier's natural skill set and aggressive mindset as a passer. We'll see if he can impress in training camp and the preseason as Newton recovers from offseason shoulder surgery.

Panthers | Cam Newton feeling great    Mon May 6, 11:41 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said he feels at full strength and hopes to be throwing before training camp. Newton hasn't been given a timetable for when he'll be cleared, but he's confident there won't be another setback like last season. He began a vegan diet in hopes of getting his weight into the 237-pound range, which would be the lowest of his career.

Footballguys view: Newton's weight isn't an issue, it's the fact that he takes big hits from defenders all the time. He's an athletic quarterback but using his legs comes with a price. The team needs to protect him better when he's in the pocket and Newton needs to learn how to get rid of the ball quicker or throw the ball away in order to preserve his health. We should see him at some point in training camp.

Undrafted free-agent RB Elijah Holyfield (Georgia), S Corrion Ballard (Utah), WR Damion Jeanpiere Jr. (Nichols State) and LB Jordan Kunaszyk (California) agreed to terms on undisclosed contracts with the Carolina Panthers on Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Holyfield, son of boxing champion Evander Holyfield, had to wait his turn at Georgia. He was behind guys like Sony Michel and Nick Chubb until the 2018 season when he finally got an opportunity to start. He started nine games for the Bulldogs, rushing for 1,018 yards on 159 carries. Holyfield is a power player with little nuance to his rushing style. We'll monitor him but only in crazy deep dynasty formats.

Panthers | D.J. Moore switches agents    Sun Apr 28, 12:55 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore announced Sunday, April 28, he has switched agents and will now be represented by Drew Rosenhaus and Robert Bailey.

Footballguys view: Moore had a standout season with the Panthers as a rookie in 2018. He finished the year with 55 catches for 788 yards and two touchdowns. A first-round pick for the Panthers in 2018, the team has him under contract through 2022 if they choose to use the fifth-year option. Moore could flirt with WR2 level production in 2019.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart retires with Panthers    Tue Apr 23, 11:01 AM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Stewart (Giants) signed a one-day contract Tuesday, April 23, to retire with the Carolina Panthers.

Footballguys view: Stewart was the #13 pick for the Panthers in 2008 even though the team already had De'Angelo Williams. A myriad of leg and foot injuries kept him from fulfilling his potential, but he still finished with over 7000 rushing yards and gave us some great stretches of play over the years.
