Panthers | Ian Thomas trending up    Sat Jun 23, 09:14 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Ian Thomas saw some first-team reps during minicamp and has a chance to beat out TE Chris Manhertz for the No. 2 tight end job.

Panthers | Taylor Heinicke could be backup    Thu Jun 21, 11:51 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Taylor Heinicke is 'in the running' for the backup quarterback job, according to Bryan Strickland of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: The Panthers chose to not bring back Derek Anderson, so they will have one of the most anonymous backup quarterbacks in the league. Garrett Gilbert is the current leader, but Heinicke was with current Panthers offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Norv and Scott Turner for two years in Minnesota, so he could overtake Gilbert with a good camp and preseason.

Panthers | Wes Horton may see bigger role    Thu Jun 21, 04:23 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Wes Horton could receive a bigger role on defense this season if he is able to show more consistency during training camp.

Panthers | D.J. Moore out to nice start    Tue Jun 19, 02:40 AM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore has 'looked the part' thus far during organized team activities and minicamp, according to Albert Breer of SI.com.

Footballguys view: The Panthers selected Moore in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft with the idea that he could eventually be a playmaking wide receiver for them. Moore can work from the slot where his quickness and competitiveness can create mismatches. The Panthers want to have a more robust passing attack in 2018, and Moore is going off the board at WR47 (10.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | D.J. Moore signs contract    Mon Jun 18, 03:46 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore signed his four-year rookie deal Monday, June 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Moore is one of the most exciting WRs in the 2018 NFL draft, and he could quickly become a favorite of QB Cam Newton. He's got some Steve Smith to his game as Moore is feisty, strong and can win contested catches. Fantasy owners are taking him at WR48 (10.12) in current 12-team PPR drafts.

Panthers | Julius Peppers likely to be limited    Sat Jun 16, 03:36 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers likely will receive limited snaps this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: That only makes sense for a seasoned veteran like Peppers. Each of the last three years Peppers has seen his snaps go down from 700 (2015) to 587 (2016) to 500 (2017). The Panthers should use the future Hall of Famer as a part-time player to get pressure on the quarterback.

Panthers | D.J. Moore ready to make an impact    Thu Jun 14, 11:56 PM

Carolina Panthers WR D.J. Moore is 'more than ready to contribute' for the offense, according to Max Henson of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: The 24th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Moore has a bit of Stefon Diggs (Vikings) to his game. Like Diggs, Moore is supremely athletic with great concentration. Moore has incredible foot frequency which he uses to get open on underneath routes. He's a weapon from the slot who should quickly become a favorite of QB Cam Newton.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel back at practice    Thu Jun 14, 07:58 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (ankle) participated in practice Thursday, June 14. He sat out practice Wednesday, June 13, because he is recovering from an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: This isn't going to help him earn a bigger piece of the pie. We don't expect Samuel to have a big impact this year as it is, but he needs to be on the field to get any targets at all.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly aiming for training camp    Tue Jun 12, 11:39 AM

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) is aiming to be ready for training camp after having shoulder surgery.

Footballguys view: This sounds about right given the timetable for the shoulder surgery he had right after the 2017 season. Kuechly is on track for training camp barring any setbacks.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey poised for big workload    Tue Jun 5, 01:42 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey will be the featured back this season following the release of Jonathan Stewart, according to ESPN's David Newton, who reports head coach Ron Rivera said Monday, June 4, that he sees no reason why McCaffrey cannot reach 200 carries in 2018 after finishing with 117 as a rookie.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate McCaffrey has added more body armor (weight) this offseason in anticipation of a larger role. The team added C.J. Anderson in free agency and he can be a two-down banger if need be. McCaffrey is a compact back who can make plays in space. He's not great running between the tackles, but he doesn't shy away from work inside.

Panthers | Derek Anderson will not return    Thu May 31, 05:39 PM

Free-agent QB Derek Anderson (Panthers) will not be an option for the backup quarterback job this season, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: That should just about do it for Anderson, who has never really been more than a backup quarterback. So if there's no backup job for him, there's probably no job at all.

Panthers | Ryan Kalil moving around well    Tue May 29, 01:54 PM

Carolina Panthers C Ryan Kalil missed most of last season with a neck and shoulder injury, but he looks healthier than he has 'in a while' and 'moved around well in sled and loose-ball drills' Tuesday, May 29.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel healing quickly    Tue May 29, 12:20 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (ankle) was able to participate 'a little bit' during team drills on Tuesday, May 29.

Footballguys view: Samuel is recovering from a broken bone and ligament damage in his left ankle as a rookie last season. He's a versatile player who can make big plays after the catch. Samuel is raw as a route runner but has the athleticism to create with the ball in his hands. We're not expecting much from Samuel this year but he's a dynasty prospect we like to monitor.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey noticeably stronger    Tue May 29, 12:09 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey estimates he has 'gained five pounds of good muscle' this offseason, according to Bill Voth of Panthers.com.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey needed to add more body armor to his frame, and that's what he's done this offseason. He'll be splitting time with free agent addition C.J. Anderson this year. While Anderson can be the banger between the tackles, McCaffrey should see plenty of work as a speedy back and receiver out of the backfield (or from the slot). McCaffrey has a current ADP of RB11 (2.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | C.J. Anderson busy late in the season    Mon May 28, 11:24 PM

Carolina Panthers RB C.J. Anderson carried the ball a league-high 101 times from Week 13 to Week 17 in 2017, while still a member of the Denver Broncos. His 422 rushing yards over that span ranked fifth.

Panthers | Devin Funchess not a No. 1 WR?    Sun May 27, 11:06 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess has the talent to reach 1,000 yards, according to Bill Voth of Panthers.com, but Voth doesn't believe offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants a 'true No. 1 wideout' for his offense.

Footballguys view: Funchess reached career highs in catches (63), receiving yards (840) and receiving touchdowns (8) last year. He took advantage of the opportunity presented when Kelvin Benjamin was traded away and Greg Olsen went down with a foot injury. We'll see what Funchess does this year with a healthy Olsen and exciting rookie WR D.J. Moore added to the mix. His current ADP is WR28 (6.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel taking part    Tue May 22, 09:28 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel (ankle) is participating in organized team activities Tuesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in 2017, Samuel only made it through nine games as a rookie. He's raw as a route runner but when healthy Samuel can be one of the most athletic players on the field. We'll see how he can improve during his second season in the pros.

Panthers | Russell Shepard released    Mon May 14, 03:27 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers WR Russell Shepard was officially released Monday, May 14.

Footballguys view: Shepard is incredibly athletic but he's still somewhat raw as a receiver. Reports indicated he didn't want to take a pay cut, leading to his release. The Panthers have added plenty of talent to the receiving corps and should not miss Shepard. We'll see if he can latch on as a reserve receiver and return man somewhere else.

Panthers | Garrett Gilbert leader for No. 2 QB job    Sat May 12, 01:41 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Garrett Gilbert is considered the leading candidate for the No. 2 quarterback job at this point, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Gilbert should be in the lead for the backup spot. The Panthers only have Taylor Heinicke and rookie Kyle Allen competing with him.

Panthers | Two Panthers draft picks sign deals    Sat May 12, 12:36 PM

Carolina Panthers third-round draft choice S Rashaan Gaulden and seventh-round draft choice LB Andre X. Smith signed four-year contracts with the Panthers Saturday, May 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Panthers | Kenjon Barner signs with Panthers    Fri May 11, 10:23 AM

Free-agent RB Kenjon Barner (Eagles) signed an undisclosed deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, May 11.

Footballguys view: Barner began his career with the Panthers as a sixth-round pick (2013) out of Oregon. The Panthers need some depth at the position, even after adding C.J. Anderson in free agency, because they put Fozzy Whittaker on Injured Reserve. Barner can help give them veteran depth at the running back position and can also contribute on special teams.

Panthers | Carolina inks five to rookie contracts    Thu May 10, 07:56 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Donte Jackson, DE Marquis Haynes, LB Jermaine Carter, DT Kendrick Norton and TE Ian Thomas all signed their four-year rookie deals on Thursday, May 10.

Footballguys view: The first pick in the fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft, Thomas is an intriguing prospect who reminds some in the scouting community of a younger version of Jermaine Gresham. Thomas is a raw prospect, measuring in at 6'4" 259 pounds. He can use his size to his advantage, has the speed to attack the middle seam of a defense and Thomas has strong hands. We'll see if he can develop for the Panthers behind starter Greg Olsen.

Carolina Panthers CBs Donte Jackson and Ross Cockrell are expected to compete for one of the starting cornerback jobs during training camp.

Panthers | Derek Anderson still an option    Thu May 10, 03:38 PM

Free-agent QB Derek Anderson (Panthers) is still talking with the Carolina Panthers, but he may be too expensive for the team.

Footballguys view: Cam Newton has been pretty healthy, so the role of understudy for him isn't critical. Given that they are otherwise ready to role with a group consisting of Taylor Heinicke, Garrett Gilbert and rookie Kyle Allen, we don't think they are worried about the backup spot.

Panthers | Fozzy Whittaker placed on IR    Thu May 10, 03:21 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Fozzy Whittaker (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, May 10, after he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament during a non-contact drill Monday, May 7.

Footballguys view: Whittaker was a 'break lass in case of emergency' option, so we're not losing much here unless of course, an emergency occurs. Christian McCaffrey and former Broncos back C.J. Anderson will take the lead. Anderson will see more work on early and non-passing downs, though McCaffrey put on muscle this offseason, so he could see more carries than he did in 2017. We'll watch this closely during camp.

Panthers | Elijah Hood claimed by Panthers    Tue May 8, 05:19 PM

The Carolina Panthers claimed RB Elijah Hood off waivers from the Oakland Raiders Tuesday, May 8.

Footballguys view: Hood played his college ball for the North Carolina Tarheels, so he's coming home in a sense. A big back, Hood will now compete for a roster spot behind Christian McCaffrey and recently signed C.J. Anderson. Hood is a two-down thumper and may struggle to crack the 53-man roster.

Panthers | Carolina signs C.J. Anderson    Mon May 7, 04:01 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Anderson (Broncos) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Carolina Panthers Monday, May 7, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Anderson is coming off the best season of his career, but the Broncos decided to go in a different direction. He stayed healthy for 16 games for the first time last year and posted over 1,000 yards rushing. With Jonathan Stewart (Giants) moving on in free agency, Anderson can take over that role as the 'big back' to Christian McCaffrey's 'do everything' role. Anderson should be the leading ball carrier for the Panthers with McCaffrey getting the most receptions out of the backfield.

Carolina Panthers defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller resigned earlier this week following an investigation into complaints of inappropriate conduct, according to a statement released by the team Friday, May 4.

Undrafted free-agent QB Kyle Allen (Houston) reportedly agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Panthers | Carolina selects Ian Thomas    Sat Apr 28, 12:11 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Indiana TE Ian Thomas with the 101st overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Saturday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Greg Olsen is signed and ready to go again, but there's not much behind him. Thomas has some upside, good strength and a plus frame but needs to work on his hands, doesn't block well and isn't very good at yards after the catch because he likes to deliver hits. There's some intriguing upside here, but it will take work to get it out in the open.

Panthers | Donte Jackson joins Carolina    Fri Apr 27, 08:38 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Louisiana State CB Donte Jackson with the 55th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Friday, April 27.

Footballguys view: Jackson is super-fast, but lacks the ball skills and cover abilities of the corners who went higher. Is a little small-framed, and may not hold up in run support.

Panthers | Carolina selects D.J. Moore    Thu Apr 26, 10:47 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Maryland WR D.J. Moore with the 24th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Thursday, April 26.

Footballguys view: That shout of joy your heard was Cam Newton who was depending on only Torrey Smith and Greg Olsen for help. Moore is a tough, fast guy who can play outside, but needs to sharpen his route running a bit. Will see a lot of work, early and often.

Panthers | Greg Olsen signing extension    Thu Apr 26, 11:10 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen will sign a two-year extension Thursday, April 26, worth $8.55 million per season with a maximum value of up to $10.05 million per year. He could become the highest-paid tight end in the league.

Footballguys view: As one of the few remaining weapons standing near Cam Newton, this was important for Carolina to get locked down. Olsen is a good tight end who can produce nice fantasy numbers each year and yet often flies under the radar.
