Panthers | Cam Newton needs confidence repaired    Thu Mar 30, 08:34 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton needs to repair his confidence in the offseason, according to head coach Ron Rivera. 'He's going to have to rebuild his confidence,' Rivera said. 'It was shook. Let's be honest, I'm not going to lie about that.'

Footballguys view: We're not shocked this is an issue, as he looked much different last season. The loss in the Super Bowl, the negative criticism and then a down season all wore on him. We think he can bounce back and be a really good fantasy starter this year.

Panthers | Captain Munnerlyn to play nickel    Wed Mar 29, 10:39 AM

Carolina Panthers CB Captain Munnerlyn will be the team's nickel back, and he could compete for spots on the outside as well, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart terms    Mon Mar 27, 11:23 AM

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart is due up to $9.5 million over the next two seasons with an $8 million base value. His new deal freed up $2.075 million in cap space for 2017.

Footballguys view: The Panthers moved some money around with Stewart, and his role may change this season. We're expecting the Panthers to take a RB with the no.8 selection in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. If they select someone like Leonard Fournette (LSU), then Stewart would take a back seat to the rookie. Stewart has already publicly declared he's okay with the team drafting a running back.

Panthers | 'No concern' Cam Newton ready for opener    Sun Mar 26, 01:39 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be ready for the season opener 'without a doubt', according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: He should've had shoulder surgery earlier this year, but apparently Newton made a different decision. Newton is set to undergo surgery Thursday, March 30, to repair the partially torn rotator cuff he suffered in Week 14.

Panthers | Carolina believes in Matt Kalil    Sat Mar 25, 09:52 PM

Carolina Panthers OT Matt Kalil is the 'right guy' for the offensive line from a fiscal and football standpoint, according to general manager Dave Gettleman. 'We did a lot of work on him, and I feel really good about it,' Gettleman said.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart fine with team drafting RB    Sat Mar 25, 02:37 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart said he believes it would be a good thing if the Panthers selected a running back in the 2017 NFL draft because it would keep him fresher late in games.

Footballguys view: Stewart doesn't really have a say in the matter. He got a contract extension to stay with the Panthers, and he has to expect a RB to be added in the draft. The Panthers have the 8th-overall pick, and someone like Leonard Fournette (LSU) could be their selection.

Panthers | Michael Oher still in protocol    Fri Mar 24, 05:10 PM

Carolina Panthers OT Michael Oher (concussion) is making some good progress but is still in the concussion protocol, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Panthers | Garrett Gilbert joins Carolina    Fri Mar 24, 05:01 PM

Free-agent QB Garrett Gilbert (Raiders) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 24. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gilbert is a camp arm for the Panthers. He'll be hard pressed to make the 53-man roster behind Cam Newton and Derek Anderson.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's option to be exercised    Fri Mar 24, 12:36 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's fifth year option for the 2018 season will be picked up, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Benjamin didn't look quite like his old self last year after missing all of the 2015 season with a knee injury. The Panthers make the wise move by keeping him under contract through the 2018 season. The way he plays over the next two seasons will determine if/when he gets a long-term contract with the Panthers.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin deadline looming    Fri Mar 24, 09:41 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has a May 2 deadline for the team to pick up his fifth-year option, which figures to be around $8 million.

Footballguys view: Even though he missed all of 2015 due to a knee injury, Benjamin is a talent the Panthers need to keep around. Still working through the after effects of his knee injury, Benjamin had a down 2016 season. Expect him to bounce back in a revamped passing attack.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart extended    Fri Mar 24, 09:10 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart signed a contract extension through the 2018 season Friday, March 24. Stewart had a cap figure of $8.25 million, and the extension was expected to reduce that in 2017.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Not that long ago, there was some buzz about Stewart potentially getting released as a post-June 1 cut. Now he returns with an extension, but we're still expecting the Panthers to pick another RB with the 8th-overall pick.

Panthers | David Njoku visits Carolina    Fri Mar 24, 12:24 AM

Miami (Fla.) TE David Njoku visited the Carolina Panthers Thursday, March 23.

Footballguys view: His best pro comparison is Greg Olsen, so it makes sense that Njoku would visit with the Panthers. He's likely a first-round pick, so the Panthers shouldn't be considering him at no.8 overall. However, if he falls into the top of the second round the Panthers should pounce.

Panthers | Cam Robinson visiting Carolina    Mon Mar 20, 12:31 PM

Alabama OT Cam Robinson is on a pre-draft visit with the Carolina Panthers Monday, March 20.

Footballguys view: Robinson is big, powerful and would fit well in a power blocking system. He needs to refine his technique in pass-protection, but the natural gifts are there. The Panthers have the 8th-overall pick in the first round, and that's likely too high for Robinson.

Panthers | Carolina interested in Wayne Gallman     Fri Mar 17, 10:07 PM

Clemson RB Wayne Gallman was observed by Carolina Panthers running backs coach Jim Skipper during his pro day Thursday, March 16, and Gallman was interviewed privately by Carolina's staff after his workout.

Footballguys view: Gallman is like a bull in a china cupboard when running between the tackles...and that's both a good and a bad thing. He's aggressive with the ball in his hands, but sometimes he'll try to do too much on a carry instead of just taking what's there. Gallman has a fierce motor, and that will endear him to coaches in the NFL. He's not ready for pass protection yet, so that could delay when (and how much) he sees the field as a rookie.

Panthers | Carolina scouting Artavis Scott    Fri Mar 17, 10:04 PM

Clemson WR Artavis Scott was interviewed privately by the Carolina Panthers following his pro day Thursday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Scott is an interesting receiver for teams to consider in the mid rounds of the 2017 NFL draft. He performed well at the Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year, and Scott projects as a possession receiver in the NFL. Scott is not overly quick or fast, but he does look good after the catch and he knows how to use his frame to box out defenders on contested catches. He adds value as a potential return man as well.

Free-agent WR Charles Johnson (Vikings) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 10, worth $2.2 million, according to a source.

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Russell Shepard (Buccaneers) signed a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Friday, March 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Panthers get some depth at the WR position here. Shepard was a converted QB in college at LSU, and he's still learning the nuances of the WR position. He set career highs last year filling in for an injured Vincent Jackson with 23 catches, 341 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

Panthers | Julius Peppers returns to Carolina    Fri Mar 10, 12:50 PM

Free-agent DE/LB Julius Peppers (Packers) agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers on Friday, March 10. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Who says you can never go home? Peppers is back where he began his pro career as the no.2 overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft. He's not the same player he used to be, but Peppers can definitely contribute as a part-time pass-rusher.

Free-agent OT Matt Kalil (Vikings) is signing a five-year, $55.5 million deal with the Carolina Panthers Thursday, March 9, according to a source. The deal includes $25 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: A fresh start is a good idea for the former high first round pick. He's struggled in Minnesota for several years, though, so the money is a bit surprising.

Panthers | Matt Kalil expected to land in Carolina    Thu Mar 9, 08:13 AM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent OT Matt Kalil is expected to sign with the Carolina Panthers if there are no snags in final talks, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Well, another Kalil to the Panthers. The Vikings won't try hard to keep the disappointing former first rounder who could do with a change of scenery and a fresh start. The Panthers, meanwhile, desperately need an upgrade on offensive line.

Panthers | Carolina want Ted Ginn back    Wed Mar 1, 05:56 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent WR Ted Ginn Jr. is a player the Panthers would like to re-sign this offseason, according to general manager David Gettleman.
