Panthers | Victor Cruz happy with Carolina visit    Mon Feb 20, 07:57 PM

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) said his visit with the Carolina Panthers Monday, Feb. 20, went well. No deal is imminent at this point, but it appears there is mutual interest between Cruz and the Panthers. Cruz does not have any other visits scheduled at this point.

Panthers | Victor Cruz visited Panthers    Mon Feb 20, 03:13 PM

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) visited the Carolina Panthers over the weekend, according to a source. A deal is not imminent and Cruz is expected to speak with at least one other team.

Footballguys view: Cruz's best landing spot may be the Panthers. The team could use a third receiver to work the underneath routes. He'd basically be fourth in the pecking order when adding star tight end Greg Olsen to the conversation. No matter where he lands, Cruz is unlikely to be a fantasy factor in 2017.

Panthers | Victor Cruz could fit in Carolina    Sat Feb 18, 01:03 AM

Free-agent WR Victor Cruz (Giants) could be pursued by the Carolina Panthers, according to beat writer David Newton. General manager Dave Gettleman has a connection with Cruz from his time with the New York Giants, and Cruz would fill Carolina's need for a slot receiver.

Footballguys view: Cruz might have a few looks on the open market, and the Panthers might be his best opportunity. They need weapons in the passing game, and Cruz showed he could still work the underneath routes in 2016.

Panthers | Matt Kalil may be option for Carolina    Fri Feb 17, 05:04 PM

Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent OT Matt Kalil could be a target for the Carolina Panthers if he hits the free-agent market

Footballguys view: His brother, Ryan Kalil plays center for the Panthers. Matt Kalil missed most of 2016 due to a hip injury that required surgery. The Vikings have not shut the door on bringing back Matt Kalil, but it would have to be on a one-year "prove it" deal.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey an option for CAR?    Tue Feb 7, 10:15 AM

Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey could have a potential landing spot with the Carolina Panthers with the No. 8 pick in the 2017 NFL draft. The Panthers hired running backs coach Lance Taylor last week, and he coached McCaffrey in college. Florida State RB Dalvin Cook and Louisiana State RB Leonard Fournette are also mentioned as options.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey could get a "James White" bump in the 2017 NFL draft. Like White, McCaffrey may not be a traditional running back who can handle 25 carries between the tackles. However, McCaffrey is incredibly dangerous as a runner in open space or as a receiver. He can line up as a slot receiver or catch passes out of the backfield. McCaffrey can also help as a return man.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart in 2017 plans    Tue Feb 7, 10:14 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart appears to be in the team's plans for 2017. Head coach Ron Rivera mentioned Stewart by name in saying the team can't rely on its quarterback as its leading rusher. 'We've got to get guys like Jonathan Stewart rolling. We've got to put it in our backs' hands and get the ball to our playmakers.'

Footballguys view: Stewart is likely to share the backfield in 2017. We're expecting the Panthers to add a running back via the 2017 NFL draft. Fantasy owners need to take note here.

Panthers | Graham Gano expected to face competition    Fri Feb 3, 06:38 PM

The Carolina Panthers are expected to add a kicker during free agency or the NFL draft who will compete with PK Graham Gano during training camp.

Footballguys view: Gano was only 30-for-38 this year, which was among the worst in the league. He's also due over three million dollars next year, which could make him a cut in a camp kicking competition that ends close to a tie.

Panthers | Kawann Short open to franchise tag    Fri Feb 3, 06:31 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DE Kawann Short said after the season he would prefer to sign a long-term contact but would be fine if the Panthers placed the franchise tag on him.

Panthers | Michael Oher still in protocol    Thu Feb 2, 05:26 PM

Carolina Panthers OT Michael Oher (concussion) is progressing, but remains in the NFL's concussion protocol, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The higher awareness of long term concussion issues and Oher still being in the protocol this long after the season means that Oher is the danger zone where the length of his career could be affected. Oher suffered the concussion that ended his season way back in Week 3.

Panthers | Kawann Short likely to receive tag    Thu Feb 2, 02:36 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DT Kawann Short probably will receive the franchise tag this offseason, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Short provides all-important pass rush presence from inside and provides an excellent complement to Star Lotulelei. The Panthers were willing to let Josh Norman go last season in part to keep a player like Short, but the way things went with Norman should inform Short on how to proceed in negotiations.

Panthers | CAR names three coaches    Thu Feb 2, 09:21 AM

Carolina Panthers assistant defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller was promoted to secondary coach Thursday, Feb. 2. The Panthers also hired Lance Taylor as wide receivers coach and Jeff Imamura as assistant defensive backs coach.

Footballguys view: Taylor was former Panthers WR coach Ricky Proehl's assistant in 2013, and he coached top 2017 draft running back Christian McCaffrey at Stanford in recent years. This should fuel speculation that the Panthers will target McCaffrey, and it provides some hope of continuity for Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess, whose development plateaued in 2016.

Panthers | Curtis Fuller expected to be promoted    Wed Feb 1, 04:12 PM

Carolina Panthers assistant defensive backs coach Curtis Fuller is expected to be named the team's new secondary coach this week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Panthers lost Sean McDermott to head coaching job in Buffalo, but it looks like they will be able to have continuity among their defensive coaches without him.

Panthers | Carolina eyeing slot receivers    Sat Jan 28, 09:28 PM

East Carolina WR Zay Jones, North Carolina WR Ryan Switzer and Eastern Washington WR Cooper Kupp were the slot receivers who impressed Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman during Senior Bowl practices.

Footballguys view: Kupp was the most impressive of the trio mentioned here. With a non-stop motor, Kupp wins at the point of the catch and runs nice routes. Jones is a good route runner who regularly got separation. Switzer has great foot frequency and can change direction on a dime. However, his small catch radius is a problem when passes aren't right on the mark.

Panthers | Carolina won't reach for tackle    Sat Jan 28, 09:22 PM

Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman said the offensive tackle class in the 2017 NFL Draft isn't great, and he won't reach for a tackle just to fill a need.

Footballguys view: There will probably be three offensive tackles selected in the first round, and each one of them has questions. Ryan Ramczyk (Wisconsin) bounced around to a few teams before landing with Wisconsin. Cam Robinson (Alabama) has problems with consistency and may not impress at the chalk board. Garett Bolles (Utah) is going to be a 25-year old rookie with only one year of experience at the FBS level. Any team in need of an offensive tackle should proceed with caution.

Panthers | Carolina GM impressed by O.J. Howard    Sat Jan 28, 09:16 PM

Alabama TE O.J. Howard didn't disappoint during Senior Bowl practices, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman, and Gettleman said Howard has the 'strike zone to die for.'

Footballguys view: Howard was one of the most impressive players at the Senior Bowl, and he may have moved up to be a top-15 pick in the 2017 NFL draft. His big, measuring in at 6'6" 249 pounds and can fly down the field. Howard is arguably the best tight end in what could be the best TE draft class in NFL history.

Panthers | Julius Peppers could return to Carolina    Sat Jan 28, 05:58 PM

Impending free-agent LB Julius Peppers could be an option to return to the Carolina Panthers, where he spent the first eight years of his career, according to the Charlotte Observer's Scott Fowler.

Footballguys view: Peppers began his career with the Panthers as the no.2 overall pick in the 2002 NFL draft. He spent eight seasons there before moving on to the Bears then to the Packers. Entering his age-37 season, Peppers has to be considering retirement. However, if he wants to keep playing then going back to Carolina makes sense. We'll see if he'd sign a team-friendly deal to go back where it all started.

Panthers | Michael Oher's status for 2017 uncertain    Fri Jan 27, 04:08 PM

Carolina Panthers OT Michael Oher's (concussion) status is uncertain going into next year, according to general manager Dave Gettleman, who said, 'We're going to look at players, because right now we just don't know.' Oher missed the final 13 games of the regular season and Gettleman indicated that the club would 'look at what tackles are available in free agency, look at what is available in the draft and see where they fit.'

Footballguys view: Signed through 2019, Oher's status is up in the air. He suffered a concussion in Week 2 and missed the rest of the regular season. This isn't a great draft or free agent class at tackle, but it sounds like the Panthers are not counting on Oher going forward.

Panthers | Kawann Short could receive franchise tag    Mon Jan 23, 12:28 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Kawann Short is a 'definite possibility' to receive the franchise tag this offseason, according to ESPN.com's David Newton.

Footballguys view: We could see Short get a huge long-term contract from another team if the Panthers decide they can't afford him. They'll be looking at a new deal for fellow DT Star Lotulelei next offseason, and that could lead them to letting Short go. This is an incredibly deep draft class at defensive tackle, plus the team has 2016 first-round pick Vernon Butler ready to start next to Lotulelei this season.

Panthers | Mario Addison hopes to return to CAR    Sun Jan 22, 12:35 PM

Carolina Panthers impending free-agent DE Mario Addison has expressed his interest in re-signing with the Panthers this offseason.

Footballguys view: With 21 sacks over the last three seasons, Addison is going to get plenty of interest on the open market if he makes it that far. With DE Charles Johnson expected to hit free agency, keeping Addison could be a top priority for the Panthers.

Panthers | Mose Frazier signs    Wed Jan 18, 12:38 AM

The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent WR Mose Frazier (49ers) to a reserve-future contract Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Memphis in 2016, Frazier was Paxton Lynch's favorite target in college. The Broncos did pick him up, but Frazier was placed on the practice squad after camp. Frazier was bounced from the practice squad in Denver only to find himself getting picked up by Buffalo then briefly by the 49ers. He's a small, quick receiver who has dangerous moves in the open field.

Panthers | Carolina works out Aaron Murray    Tue Jan 17, 02:56 PM

Free-agent QB Aaron Murray (Eagles) worked out for the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, Jan. 17, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Murray is an accurate passer on short and intermediate routes. He lacks a big arm, but Murray throws with good anticipation and is worth taking a look at as a developmental prospect.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly will be ready    Fri Jan 13, 11:51 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (concussion) will be ready for spring workouts, according to defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.

Footballguys view: Kuechly has a history of concussions, and the team has been cautious with him. He was limited to 10 games this year, and even though he was cleared from the concussion protocol the Panthers didn't want to bring him back in a lost season.

Panthers | Ted Ginn will be free agent    Thu Jan 12, 01:19 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Ted Ginn Jr. will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Ginn improved as a receiver in Carolina, but is still a middling option for teams. It's worth seeing where he lands but his upside is extremely limited.

Panthers | Steve Wilks set to run Carolina defense    Wed Jan 11, 09:16 PM

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart a possible cut?    Wed Jan 11, 09:42 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart could be a possible cut in the offseason, in the opinion of beat writer David Newton. The move would save the team $6.25 million with a post-June 1 designation.

Footballguys view: The language of the NFL is money, so a move away from Stewart wouldn't be a surprise given his price tag. He hasn't had a 1,000-yard season since 2009, and he hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2011. Stewart has missed three games each of the last three years. Oh yeah...this is an incredibly strong draft class at the running back position.

Panthers | Season to forget for Cam Newton    Mon Jan 9, 07:01 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton tallied career lows in completion percentage (52.9) and passer rating (75.8) just one year after winning the NFL MVP. He also managed a career low in rush attempts (90) and rushing yards (359) and tied his career low in rushing touchdowns (5).

Footballguys view: Newton struggled and the Panthers followed his lead. This season was a disaster just one year after representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. We'll see what changes the Panthers make to get more out of Newton and company in 2017.

Panthers | Carolina signs several to futures deals    Mon Jan 2, 08:18 PM

The Carolina Panthers signed WR Keyarris Garrett, RB Jalen Simmons, TE Scott Simonson and TE Eric Wallace to Reserve/Futures contracts. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Garrett is an interesting WR prospect because of his size (6'3" 220 pounds) and large catch radius. Undrafted out of South Carolina State this year, Simmons made some plays in camp for the Panthers. His quick feet allow him to eat up space in a hurry. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should monitor both.

Panthers | No surgery for Cam Newton    Mon Jan 2, 07:04 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) said he will not need to undergo surgery on his injured should this offseason.

Footballguys view: Rest will do a body good. Newton struggled this season, and dropping from 45 total touchdowns (2015) to 24 total touchdowns (2016) caused him to rank 17th for quarterbacks in standard-scoring leagues.

Panthers | Cam Newton may run less    Mon Jan 2, 06:39 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton likely will be asked to run fewer zone reads next season because head coach Ron Rivera said he wants to see Newton evolve as a quarterback and take fewer hits. 'You can't sit there and expect us to run 20 zone reads and expect him to carry the ball 10 out of those 20 times,' Rivera said. 'That's the truth of the matter.' Rivera said the team will still look for ways to use Newton's athleticism like play action passes.
