Panthers | Bene Benwikere should be ready    Sun Jun 19, 05:41 PM

Carolina Panthers CB Bene Benwikere (ankle) should be ready for the start of training camp and will not be limited, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all the help they can get in the secondary after parting ways with former franchise-tagged CB Josh Norman. Benwikere suffered a season-ending ankle injury in the Panthers' Week 14 win over the Atlanta Falcons. He missed the team's run to the Super Bowl, but now it looks like he'll be near full strength when training camp gets here at the end of July.

Panthers | Carolina only choice for Charles Tillman    Sun Jun 19, 01:42 PM

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman (Panthers) only wants to play for the Carolina Panthers once he's fully recovered from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: The Panthers were 15-1 in the regular season with Tillman before an ACL tear in Week 17 put him out for the playoffs and Super Bowl. After parting ways with former franchise-tagged player Josh Norman, the Panthers have collected CBs to find talent. They drafted three CBs in the 2016 NFL draft and they may have interest in the 35-year old veteran if they feel a boost is needed.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 18, 03:28 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) should be ready to go for the start of training camp, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: Getting their superstar LB at full strength will greatly benefit the Panthers defense. They have a rock-solid front seven on defense, but we will be watching to see how their secondary comes together after parting ways with former franchise player CB Josh Norman. Kuechly had surgery in February for a torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Panthers | Michael Oher signs extension    Fri Jun 17, 08:38 AM

Carolina Panthers OT Michael Oher was signed to a three-year, $21.6 million extension with $8 million fully guaranteed Friday, June 17.

Footballguys view: Oher has had plenty of ups and downs during his pro career. After his career fell off with both the Ravens and the Titans, Oher signed with the Panthers as a flier. He played well last year in pass-protection (except for the Super Bowl), and the team wanted to keep him around for the near future.

Panthers | Ron Rivera receives extension    Thu Jun 16, 03:49 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera received a one-year contract extension Thursday, June 16, that will pay him more than $6 million a year, according to a league source. Rivera led Carolina to a 17-2 record and a berth in Super Bowl 50 in 2015 and is under contract through the 2018 season. He's now among the top 10 highest paid coaches in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Riverboat Ron cashes in his chips for a big payday. The way he has managed Cam Newton's development, the improvement of the defense and even overcoming the injuries which sidelined their best receiver last season - all gave him ammunition to get a nice contract. The Panthers are expected to make another run at the Super Bowl.

Panthers | Brenton Bersin sits out    Wed Jun 15, 09:34 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Brenton Bersin (ankle) is out of practice Wednesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: Will the Panthers notice? Probably not, as Bersin has seen a whopping 31 targets and 22 catches in his two-year career.

Panthers | Devin Funchess returns to practice    Wed Jun 15, 09:33 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (illness) returned to practice Wednesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: Funchess should have an easier time of it with Kelvin Benjamin healthy, but he'll also see less targets. That's assuming he can continue to improve as he did towards the end of the 2015 NFL season. Consider him a WR5 with upside for now but watch him closely in camp.

Panthers | Brenton Bersin rolls ankle    Tue Jun 14, 12:29 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Brenton Bersin (ankle) rolled his ankle in practice Tuesday, June 14, but head coach Ron Rivera didn't know the extent of the injury. It wouldn't be a surprise if Bersin sat out the final two days of minicamp.

Carolina Panthers P Michael Palardy was waived Wednesday, June 8.

Panthers | Devin Funchess standing out    Tue Jun 7, 11:36 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess is light years ahead of where he was as a rookie and is one of the standouts at organized team activities, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: We're excited about what an improved Funchess can bring to the Panthers offense. Coming out of Michigan last year, Funchess was known as a big-bodied receiver who was incredibly raw in the nuances at the position. He worked hard and improved as a rookie last year. Funchess could push for a starting job opposite Kelvin Benjamin in 2016.

Panthers | Contract extension for Ryan Kalil    Mon Jun 6, 01:51 PM

Carolina Panthers C Ryan Kalil signed a two-year contract extension Monday, June 6. It's a two-year, $16.75 million extension that runs through 2018.

Footballguys view: Kalil is one of the best centers in the league, so this move to extend him makes a lot of sense. We'll see the team continue to run the ball more than most teams in the NFL, and Kalil will be a big part of the success they have on the ground.

Panthers | Carolina running backs improved    Wed Jun 1, 07:21 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne has lost about 10 pounds since last season, while RB Brandon Wegher is playing faster. Both seem ready to take more playing time away from RB Jonathan Stewart.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin moving well    Tue May 31, 10:18 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is moving around well during organized team activities, and it doesn't look at all like he had surgery last season on his knee, in the opinion of ESPN.com's David Newton.

Footballguys view: We're excited to see Benjamin back this year. He was a great target for QB Cam Newton as a rookie, and having him back in the arsenal should make the entire passing game better. If he's regained his explosiveness after knee surgery, then he can easily perform like a mid-range WR2 with WR1 upside for fantasy owners this season.

Panthers | Stephen Hill still recovering    Sat May 28, 04:31 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Stephen Hill (knee) only participated in some individual drills last week when the Panthers began organized team activities. Hill is still recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last season. He doesn't want to rush his recovery, but Hill said he also wants to take his time. 'I'm just trying to do all I can with what they've given me to do, and then I'll just go from there.

Footballguys view: The story with Hill will likely always be "what might have been." Following in a line of Georgia Tech WRs that include Calvin Johnson and Demaryius Thomas, Hill has seen his pro career set back by injury and inconsistency. It would be a great story if Hill was able to turn things around, stay healthy and play up to his potential. It's a story we're not counting on being written.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin back at practice    Thu May 26, 01:51 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) is back at practice in organized team activities Thursday, May 26, for the first time since tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in training camp last year. Carolina is likely to ease him back into work, though, after he totaled 1,008 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie.

Footballguys view: We're all about the Benjamin, who we are excited to see in this offense again. It was pretty potent without him and his production in his rookie season was outstanding. It's a good combination and right now we can see him as a solid WR2 for fantasy owners.

Carolina Panthers TE Jake McGee (undisclosed) was waived from the Reserve/Injured list with an injury settlement Tuesday, May 24.

Panthers | Brenton Bersin has good first day    Tue May 24, 12:49 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Brenton Bersin made plays down the seam often in the first day of practice Tuesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: Bersin has a good size/speed combination, but he's a long shot to make much of an impact for the Panthers this year.

Panthers | Vernon Butler tweaks knee    Tue May 24, 10:04 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Vernon Butler (knee) tweaked his left knee running downfield Tuesday, May 24, but he is trying to walk it off.

Footballguys view: Butler was the team's first-round pick this year, and he gives them even more strength up front on the defensive line. If healthy, the rookie can work in a rotation on the line. He's got length, strength and tenacity when getting after the quarterback.

Panthers | Jake McGee to IR    Mon May 23, 05:38 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Jake McGee (undisclosed) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Monday, May 23, after being waived/injured Friday, May 20.

Footballguys view: McGee is a sixth-year collegian the Panthers picked up as a college free agent out of the University of Florida. No word on the injury, but he was a long-shot to make it in the NFL anyway and this injury situation won't help.

Panthers | Shaq Thompson in car accident    Mon May 23, 01:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson was involved in a head-on car crash Sunday, May 22, but was not injured. Thompson was cited for crossing the center line.

Footballguys view: We're glad to hear that Thompson (or the other driver) has not been seriously injured.

Panthers | Carolina makes roster moves    Fri May 20, 06:56 PM

Free-agent WR LaRon Byrd (Redskins) and WR Tobais Palmer (Steelers) signed with the Carolina Panthers Friday, May 20. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed. The team also waived TE Andrew Bonnet and Waived/Injured TE Jake McGee (undisclosed).

Footballguys view: Byrd is a player we've monitored in super deep dynasty leagues because of his strength and wingspan. He's bounced around to multiple teams already as a pro and is likely just a camp body for the Panthers.

Panthers | Greg Olsen not planning on slowing down    Thu May 19, 09:45 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen said he anticipates playing for several more years and plans on making it tough on any new tight end to take away his reps.

Footballguys view: We see Olsen as a solid TE1 again this season and he's only going to benefit from the return of Kelvin Benjamin.

Panthers | Cam Newton can still improve    Thu May 19, 06:39 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton still has an awful lot of room to grow, in the words of head coach Ron Rivera. 'As he continues to learn and understand more and more about offensive and defensive plays, his decision-making is going to be even better,' Rivera said. 'As long as he continues to stay healthy and keep getting better physically and work on his base fundamentals, I think the young man is going to get better.'

Footballguys view: The eight best player in Pro Football Focus' 101 Top Players list, Newton is still an unfinished product. His collapse near the end of the Super Bowl - as well as his press conference afterwards - show that. Still, he won a lot of Fantasy Championships last season and we expect him to continue to get better and better. He's a lock as a QB1 and could go as high as late first round in fantasy drafts.

Panthers | Brandon Boykin cut    Mon May 16, 10:11 AM

Carolina Panthers CB Brandon Boykin was cut Monday, May 16.

Footballguys view: Boykin just signed with the Panthers (on a one-year deal) earlier this year. In less the two months, the CB-desperate Panthers are sending him packing. This suggests there has to be some off-field problems with the vexing cornerback.

Panthers | Braxton Deaver could earn spot    Sun May 15, 03:26 PM

Undrafted free-agent TE Braxton Deaver (Duke) tried out for the Carolina Panthers at their two-day rookie minicamp. Head coach Ron Rivera said Deaver will be in consideration for one of the few remaining roster spots.

Footballguys view: In rookie minicamp, Deaver has impressed the writers in attendance because of his consistent hands. Rivera said "We liked what he did. He assimilated nicely to our offense and seemed to understand and grip what we wanted to do mentally and did some good things athletically. He's going to be part of our discussion later today." Deaver caught 75 passes for 890 yards over his career with the Blue Devils.

Panthers | Vernon Butler signs rookie deal    Fri May 13, 08:50 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Vernon Butler signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, May 13. All first-round deals have a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: The Panthers already have great players on their defensive line, and Butler should fit right in. He's huge, has long arms and has the agility to get off the line quickly and create interior pressure on the quarterback. He'll begin his pro career as a rotational player behind Star Lotulelei and Kawann Short.

Panthers | Corey Brown had offseason surgery    Sun May 8, 04:49 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Corey Brown (shoulder) underwent shoulder surgery this offseason, according to LB Luke Kuechly.

Footballguys view: Last November, Brown missed a couple of games with a shoulder injury so it's no surprise he would get some sort of surgery this offseason. We'll see Brown man the slot for the Panthers with Kelvin Benjamin returning to the lineup on the outside.

Panthers | Seth Lobato invited to minicamp    Mon May 2, 02:52 PM

Free-agent QB Seth Lobato (Buccaneers) was invited to the Carolina Panthers' minicamp.

Footballguys view: Lobata is one of those early cards you get for your Madden Ultimate Team, so you know he's just a camp arm. He is an athletic quarterback, but the chances of him making the Panthers final roster are slim.

Panthers | Six UDFAs agree with Panthers    Sun May 1, 12:02 PM

The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent FB/TE Andrew Bonnet (North Dakota State), S Jeremy Cash (Duke), WR Keyarris Garrett (Tulsa), RB Devon Johnson (Marshall), WR Jenson Stoshak (Florida Atlantic) and TE Jake McGee (Florida) on undisclosed deals.

Footballguys view: Garrett is a long receiver with deceptive speed and game in the air. It was surprising to see him go undrafted. Johnson is a smashmouth power back who could win a role in a running game that uses multiple backs. McGee and Cash were also among the top UDFAs, carrying draftable grades on most boards. The Panthers had the best UDFA haul of any team.

The Carolina Panthers selected CBs Daryl Worley and James Bradberry in the second and third rounds of the 2016 NFL draft, as they attempt to replace CB Josh Norman, now with the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Bradberry is a raw kid with great upside while Worley has great ball skills but mediocre speed.

Panthers | Vernon Butler expected to make impact    Fri Apr 29, 05:42 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Vernon Butler will be part of the defensive tackle situation and is expected to make an impact as a rookie, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: They could use some help shoring up the middle of the defense and Butler is going to walk right into a lot of responsibility from the moment he shows up at the facility.

Panthers | Vernon Butler goes to Panthers    Thu Apr 28, 11:34 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Louisiana Tech DT Vernon Butler with the 30th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Butler is a big, power guy who runs to the ball and who can rush the passer. The Panthers continue to put together an outstanding defense.

Panthers | Star Lotulelei has option picked up    Tue Apr 26, 10:43 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Star Lotulelei had his fifth-year option exercised Tuesday, April 26.

Footballguys view: A great move for the Panthers here. Picking up the option will cost the team $6.7 million...a price easy to pay for one of the best in the league at his position. Expect the Panthers to now try and lock up fellow DT K.K. Short with a long-term deal.

Panthers | Cameron Artis-Payne arrested    Mon Apr 25, 04:46 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Cameron Artis-Payne was arrested Sunday, April 24, for speeding and reckless driving. He was driving 102 miles per hour in a 65 miles-per-hour zone. Neither alcohol nor drugs were involved, however. Artis-Payne was arrested on an unsecured $5,000 bond and only spent about 30 minutes in jail.

Footballguys view: This is a minor incident, and we don't think speeding...even speeding THAT much...will draw discipline from the NFL. However, with Roger Goodell you never know.

Panthers | Thomas Davis progressing with arm    Mon Apr 25, 03:41 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (arm) said his arm is doing really well, adding that he's excited about where he is now as opposed to where he was a few weeks ago.

Footballguys view: He's one of the toughest players in the league and one of our long-time favorites at linebacker. Davis broke his forearm in the NFC Championship and underwent surgery the following day. The Panthers should take it easy on him as he continues his recovery.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin should be ready for camp    Mon Apr 25, 01:49 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin (knee) should be a full participant when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Panthers offense here. They made it to Super Bowl 50 last year without Benjamin, and his presence in the big game (and all season long) was sorely missed. He's a favorite target of Cam Newton, and Benjamin is a threat in the red zone because of his size and ability to box out smaller defenders.

Panthers | Cam Newton expected to be at OTAs    Thu Apr 21, 01:23 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera expects QB Cam Newton to be on the field for the start of organized team activities Monday, April 25.

Footballguys view: It's going to be a long season for Newton, who had an awful interview after his Super Bowl loss and has been dissected since. He's going to be under an intense spotlight and how he handles it will mean everything to the Panthers' chances to make a repeat appearance. We're hoping for the best, but concerned the pressure could get to him.
