Panthers | Luke Kuechly bows out of Pro Bowl    Thu Jan 18, 10:55 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (undisclosed) won't play in the Pro Bowl due to an undisclosed injury. The injury isn't considered serious, according to team sources.

Footballguys view: As is becoming more frequent, top players bow out of what is not the prestige event it used to be, though the actual play has never been all that incredible. Still, it was once something any player wanted to do, and now it seems to be a lot of them are taking a hard pass.

Panthers | NFL doing concussion protocol investigation on CAR    Sun Jan 14, 10:24 AM

The National Football League is currently investigating whether the Carolina Panthers properly followed concussion protocol with QB Cam Newton during the NFC Wild Card game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Jan. 7. Newton was poked in the eye and also suffered a knee injury after taking a hit to the head from DT David Onyemata. A league source said the injured knee was a contributing factor to Newton staggering to the ground and having difficulty maintaining his balance. He was taken to the team's blue medical tent on the sidelines for evaluation but was not sent to the locker room, as the league's new rules require.

Footballguys view: No matter what happens with this investigation, the league needs to police team behavior on concussion protocol more closely. The Tom Savage incident alone caused concern that some teams still aren't being circumspect about looking after player safety following possible head injuries.

Panthers | Mike Tolbert could be interested in CAR return    Sun Jan 14, 09:44 AM

Buffalo Bills RB Mike Tolbert, who will be a free agent at the end of the season, expressed interest in returning to the Carolina Panthers during a radio interview with WFMZ-FM Friday, Jan. 12. Tolbert played five seasons with Carolina, maintains a home in Charlotte during the offseason and also played for Panthers offensive coordinator Norv Turner when he was the head coach of the San Diego Chargers at the beginning of his career. Tolbert added that he wanted to play two or three more seasons before retiring and wouldn't mind returning to Buffalo either.

Panthers | Thomas Davis to play one more year    Fri Jan 12, 06:22 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis said he will play one more year before he decides to retire from professional football.

Footballguys view: Davis has a $9.9 million cap hit in 2018 with $4.25 million remaining in dead money. The veteran linebacker expects to be back with the Panthers in a reduced role. Davis dealt with numerous injuries in 2017, but still played a healthy number of snaps (793) even with one game missed due to suspension. A smaller role might be best for Davis. It could help keep him fresh in what should be his final season as a pro. Davis showed last year that he had more left in the tank than some thought.

Panthers | Carolina reaches agreement with Norv Turner    Thu Jan 11, 06:35 PM

Former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner has agreed to terms with the Carolina Panthers to become the team's new offensive coordinator, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This could be a big help to Cam Newton and the offense, although Turner has struggled at times to adapt to his players. If he can avoid trying to cram Newton into a pocket passer when he just isn't that guy, the team could have success. He usually is good for tight ends and running backs as well, so Greg Olsen and Christian McCaffrey should be happy.

Panthers | Norv Turner to meet with Panthers again    Thu Jan 11, 08:15 AM

Former Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Norv Turner will meet with the Carolina Panthers again Thursday, Jan. 11, about their offensive coordinator opening.

Footballguys view: Turner could be a solid fit for Cam Newton and this offense. It would mean good things for the run game and Greg Olsen, at least as tight end production and a ground attack are hallmarks of Turner's style.

Panthers | Two Panthers fired    Tue Jan 9, 12:00 PM

Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Mike Shula and quarterbacks coach Ken Dorsey were fired Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: Shula has been with the Panthers for all of Cam Newton's pro career (since 2011). The Panthers offense faltered under his guidance even though new weapons were added to the mix. We'll see if the Panthers can add more talent to the WR position and get more out of weapons like RB Christian McCaffrey or WR Curtis Samuel with a new offensive coordinator.

Panthers | Thomas Davis expects reduced role in 2018    Tue Jan 9, 12:25 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis said he is 'pretty sure' that he'll be back with the club next season in a 'reduced role.' He added that this past year was a tough one for him while dealing with numerous injuries.

Footballguys view: Entering his age-35 season later this year, Davis is in the final year of his contract with the Panthers. Davis has a $9.9 million cap hit in 2018 with $4.25 million in dead money remaining on his deal. He was banged up for most of the season, was suspended one game but still played 793 snaps. A reduced role would get him fewer snaps, but Davis is proven at his advanced age to be effective when he's on the field.

Panthers | More Reserve/Future deals for Carolina    Mon Jan 8, 06:58 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Evan Baylis, LB Richie Brown, WR Austin Duke, OG Dorian Johnson, WR Jamaal Jones, DE Efe Obada, DB Damian Parms, DB Zack Sanchez, DB Dezmen Southward and TE Kent Taylor were signed to Reserve/Future contracts Monday, Jan. 8.

Footballguys view: At 6'6" 245 pounds, Baylis is a big and athletic tight end we'll monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. The Texans added him as an undrafted free agent in 2017 out of Oregon. Baylis can create mismatches and is a fine red-zone option due to his size.

Panthers | Julius Peppers to take time on future    Mon Jan 8, 12:23 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers said he will take some time with his family before deciding on his playing future.

Footballguys view: Peppers snared double-digit sacks (11.5) for the second time in three years. He can still get after the passer and should get plenty of interest on the open market...if he still wants to play.

Panthers | Kaelin Clay shows off fleet feet    Sun Jan 7, 08:17 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kaelin Clay went for three receptions and 32 yards on four targets in the NFC Wild Card Game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Jan. 7, including a huge 21-yard grab along the sidelines to give his team a chance late.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick for the Buccaneers in the 2015 NFL draft, Clay seems to have found a home with the Panthers. He's been on five different teams during his short time in the NFL and Clay is slated to be an ERFA this offseason. We'll keep monitoring him in deep dynasty leagues.

Panthers | Devin Funchess fights through injury    Sun Jan 7, 08:16 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (ankle, shoulder) fought through multiple injuries in the NFC Wild Card Game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Jan. 7, finishing with four receptions for 79 yards. He rolled his ankle early in the game, and his pre-existing left shoulder injury caused him to play with his arm hanging limp at times during the game.

Footballguys view: The ankle injury looked gruesome, but Funchess was able to get back into the game and make big plays. The Panthers put up a fight but fell short to the Saints. Funchess will continue as the primary WR for the Panthers in 2018.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey scores long TD    Sun Jan 7, 08:16 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey hauled in six receptions for 101 yards and a 56-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter of the NFC Wild Card Game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey helped lead the way as the Panthers made a comeback attempt against the Saints. The rookie RB proved himself as a dangerous receiver out of the backfield, and that should continue to be his primary role as a playmaker for the Panthers in 2018 and beyond.

Panthers | Greg Olsen shines in playoff loss    Sun Jan 7, 08:14 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen posted eight receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown on 12 targets in the NFC Wild Card Game on Sunday, Jan. 7, against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Olsen fought back from a foot injury to make some plays for the Panthers down the stretch. Provided he's healthy, Olsen is a favorite target for QB Cam Newton and he's a TE1 for fantasy owners in 2018.

Panthers | Ron Rivera appears close to receiving extension    Sat Jan 6, 09:52 AM

The Carolina Panthers are reportedly close to finalizing a contract extension for head coach Ron Rivera, which would keep him with the team through the 2020 season, according to multiple sources. His current deal expires after the 2018 season.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have had quite a bit of success under the guidance of Rivera. They made a Super Bowl appearance just a couple of years ago and are back into the postseason this year. Extending Rivera just makes sense.

Panthers | Greg Olsen on track to play    Fri Jan 5, 05:19 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 5, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need all hands on deck as they face the Saints on Wild Card Weekend. Olsen came back in Week 12 and took some time to get going. A 9-catch performance in Week 15 further emphasized how important Olsen can be to QB Cam Newton and the Panthers passing game. If they're going to beat the Saints (in their house), then the Panthers need a big day from Olsen.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart should be in uniform    Fri Jan 5, 05:14 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) fully participated in practice Friday, Jan. 5, and is not on the injury report for the Wild Card playoff game.

Footballguys view: Stewart was scratched from action in Week 17 when his back tightened up in the 11th hour. That extra week gave him more rest, and Stewart was eased into practice for Wild Card Weekend. Against the Saints on Sunday, Stewart should lead the way on the ground for the Panthers with rookie RB Christian McCaffrey working as the change-of-pace and primary receiving back.

Panthers | Julius Peppers undecided on future    Thu Jan 4, 07:35 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Julius Peppers said he hasn't decided yet on whether he will play in the 2018 season. He added that his focus is on the team's Wild Card round playoff game Sunday, Jan. 7, versus the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: In 16 games this year, Peppers proved that he can still play at a high level and compiled 11 sacks along the way. He is set to be a free agent in March, and the soon to be 38-year old pass rusher still has quite a bit left in the tank.

Panthers | Greg Olsen has full practice    Thu Jan 4, 02:36 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen (foot) was a full participant in practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: Tight ends have been really hit or miss this year, and that includes Olsen, who had injury issues for a chunk of it. That being said, we think he will see plenty of action Sunday afternoon, and think you should consider him a top option for your lineups.

Panthers | Cam Newton fully practices    Thu Jan 4, 02:32 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) participated fully in practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: We already liked Newton as a top option in an admittedly limited field, but that was mostly on the strength of his running. With his top receiver back, we like him even more. Keep an eye on Devin Funchess' status leading up until game time, but you should play Newton regardless.

Panthers | Devin Funchess' absences precautionary    Thu Jan 4, 02:04 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (shoulder) admitted his practice absences of late have been precautionary.

Footballguys view: So it sounds like he could play, but will be a game time decision. That's better for Carolina, and possibly Cam Newton's production, as well as give Fantasy GMs a top WR1 option this week. Keep an eye on him and alternatives as a game time decision for the last game of the weekend is dicey.

Panthers | Devin Funchess sidelined again    Thu Jan 4, 12:49 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (shoulder) was not able to practice Thursday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: Run, Cam Newton, run! without Funchess, Newton is down to Greg Olsen to throw to and nobody else. The Saints' defense is improved this season, so having a largely one-dimensional offense is going to make it tough for the Panthers to win this one. Newton is still one of the better plays this weekend due to how much running he will do, but his passing numbers are unlikely to impress.

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart practicing    Thu Jan 4, 11:38 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (back) is practicing Thursday, Jan. 4.

Footballguys view: There aren't a ton of options this week with just four games going, so Stewart has value regardless of ranking. That said, Christian McCaffrey has better upside and gets receptions as well, so if you are picking up a Carolina back, the rookie is a better bet.
