Panthers | Dale Moss signs Wed Jun 19, 06:12 PM
The Carolina Panthers signed free-agent WR Dale Moss (Bears) to an undisclosed deal Wednesday, June 19.
| Footballguys view: Moss is a huge target who played college football at South Dakota State. He was an undrafted free agent in 2012 but failed to impress during his time with the Packers, Buccaneers, or Bears. Moss is athletic but incredibly raw and may be nothing more than a camp body for the Panthers. |
Panthers | Moving away from zone-read option Wed Jun 19, 01:19 PM
The Carolina Panthers did not run many zone-read OTAs. The option package will be de-emphasized under new offensive coordinator Mike Shula.
| Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners (especially those who have Cam Newton) here. They'll run a more traditional offense this year as they want Newton to make plays from the pocket first and plays with his legs second. This could put a dent in his rushing yards and rushing touchdowns in 2013. |

Panthers | Ben Hartsock to see more targets? Tue Jun 18, 10:25 PM
Carolina Panthers TE Ben Hartsock spent most of his first nine seasons in the NFL clearing space for running backs and protecting quarterbacks, rarely getting any balls thrown his way. However, during minicamp, QB Cam Newton targeted Hartsock on a number of underneath routes and Hartsock did not have any noticeable drops.
| Footballguys view: This could be a signal of more two tight end sets, which makes sense on a team that would be looking to run more and cover up for a shallow wide receiver corps. Hartsock doesn't have fantasy value, but he could take a sliver off of Greg Olsen's value if he is running more routes out of two tight ends sets. |

Panthers | Robert Lester in mix for job Tue Jun 18, 10:24 PM
Carolina Panthers undrafted rookie SS Robert Lester reportedly looked good during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, and he is in the mix for the starting strong safety spot opposite FS Chrles Godfrey.

Panthers | Star Lotulelei in good shape Tue Jun 18, 10:23 PM
Carolina Panthers DE Star Lotulelei showed up to offseason workouts in good shape. The team also drafted pass-rusher DT Kawann Short, so it was thought Lotulelei might come out in certain passing situations. However, Lotulelei was on the field a lot during minicamp, and head coach Ron Rivera said Lotulelei has 'come a long way' as far as using his hands to shed blockers.

Panthers | Both CB spots wide open Tue Jun 18, 10:22 PM
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera says both cornerback spots are wide open, but CBs Josh Norman and Josh Thomas spent a lot of time working with the first-team defense during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. Secondary coach Steve Wilks said Norman came back for his second NFL season more disciplined and focused after being benched toward the end of last season due to inconsistent play and freelancing in coverage.

Panthers | Two getting reps Tue Jun 18, 09:12 AM
Carolina Panthers RBs DeAngelo Williams and Mike Tolbert received plenty of repetitions in OTAs with RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) on the mend.
| Footballguys view: Stewart might not be ready for training camp, so Williams has a lot of hidden value if Stewart isn't right all season. Tolbert has already shown that he can be very productive as a receiver out of the backfield and a goal-line back, so he should be on your waiver wire speed dial if Stewart struggles this season. |

Panthers | Greg Olsen showing rapport with Cam Newton Tue Jun 18, 09:08 AM
Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen is showing great timing with QB Cam Newton during offseason workouts.
| Footballguys view: The Panthers haven't had a wide receiver emerge opposite Steve Smith, so Olsen has as much upside as any of the tight ends in the second tier. Olsen came on in the second half of 2012 and has momentum heading into the 2013 season, even without tight end guru Rob Chudzinski, who is now the head coach in Cleveland. |

Panthers | Wide receiver notes Thu Jun 13, 01:25 PM
Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.
| Footballguys view: Smith should be the star receiver he's been for years in 2013. His current ADP is WR28 (6.08) which makes him a good value. The bigger question mark is LaFell. He's got the size/speed combination to be an effective pro but has lacked consistency to his game. LaFell's current ADP is WR69 and he's coming off the board at 14.10 in 12 team PPR leagues. |

Panthers | Kenjon Barner looks explosive Thu Jun 13, 01:23 PM
Carolina Panthers RB Kenjon Barner has looked explosive and fast in practice. They might figure out how to get the rookie into the backfield mix.
| Footballguys view: No surprise here. Barner was explosive on film at Oregon and showed that ability during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year. He doesn't have the frame to add more weight and lacks the size to be anything more than a change of pace back. He's currently buried on the depth chart behind Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams. |

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart might not be ready Thu Jun 13, 01:20 PM
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) may not be ready for the start of training camp.
| Footballguys view: More injury woes with Stewart here. He's so talented but durability has held him back during his pro career. Stewart could begin training camp on the PUP list if he's not ready to practice. This leads to more opportunity for DeAngelo Williams and rookie Kenjon Barner (Oregon). |

Panthers | Jon Beason practicing Thu Jun 13, 11:35 AM
Carolina Panthers LB Jon Beason (knee, shoulder) returned to practice Wednesday, June 12, with the first-team defense. He has moved to strongside linebacker. 'They passed him on the physical, so I assume he's 100 percent. He moved around like it. He made some plays,' head coach Ron Rivera said. 'You really see that energy coming back. You see that quickness.'

Panthers | Domenik Hixon sitting out minicamp Wed Jun 12, 12:38 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Domenik Hixon (hamstring) will miss all of the team's three-day minicamp this week because he injured his hamstring last week in organized team activities, according to head coach Ron Rivera. 'He is coming on, did some really nice things for us, but unfortunately we're going to miss out on the next couple days without him.'

Panthers | Jonathan Stewart still in recovery mode Wed Jun 12, 12:37 PM
Carolina Panthers RB Jonathan Stewart (ankles) continues to recover from offseason surgeries on both of his ankles and is sitting out the team's three-day minicamp this week as a result. Head coach Ron Rivera said that Stewart is recovering well but didn't say whether he'd be ready for training camp. 'The hard part is any time you have both of them done -- whether it's two ankles, two knees, two hips, two shoulders, whatever -- it's going to be a while.'

Panthers | Greg Hardy won't hold out Tue Jun 11, 12:19 PM
Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy showed up for minicamp on Tuesday, June 11, and said that he plans to report to training camp with his current contract.
| Footballguys view: Hardy is entering the final year of his rookie contract. He had a big season last year but will need a repeat performance in 2013 if he wants a big money deal on the open market in 2014. |

Panthers | Jon Beason ahead of schedule Sun Jun 9, 11:43 AM
Carolina Panthers LB Jon Beason (knee, shoulder) said he is ahead of schedule in his rehab from offseason knee and shoulder surgeries.
| Footballguys view: Beason lost his middle linebacker job to Luke Kuechly but is now competing for a starting spot on the outside. His goal is to be ready for training camp but he may be able to do some things during the team's upcoming minicamp. |

Panthers | Looking to be faster on offense Fri May 31, 10:56 AM
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said offensive coordinator Mike Shula has simplified the verbiage, which should allow the offense to be more up-tempo. Rivera said he believes the simpler verbiage will make it easier for the players to learn the plays.
| Footballguys view: The trend is sweeping the NFL. Teams want to be in a hurry up essentially right from the start of games. We'll see how this works out for teams like the Panthers in 2013. |
Panthers | Cam Newton hopes to become captain Fri May 31, 10:18 AM
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he wants to become a team captain at some point but understands that his teammates will have to vote him as one. 'Team captain is solely based off of your peers,' Newton said. 'I'm going about it each and every day, trying to do my part to prove not only to my team, but first myself, that's a big responsibility on the field and off the field.' WR Steve Smith and OT Jordan Gross are currently the team's offensive captains.
| Footballguys view: This could be a sign of Newton growing as a leader. He needs to do a better job of keeping his emotions in check when things don't go his way. If he does that we could see a more consistent Newton in 2013. |

Panthers | Steve Smith wants to play a few more years Thu May 30, 05:08 PM
Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith said he wants to play 15 or 16 years in his career, which would take him through the 2015 season or the 2016 season. Smith said he feels great physically, and head coach Ron Rivera said he believes Smith is still at the top of his game.
| Footballguys view: Smith hasn't seen his game drop-off just yet. He finished last year as the 19th best WR in fantasy football. Right now his ADP is WR28 and he's coming off the board near the end of the sixth-round in 12 team leagues. |

Panthers | Cam Newton sheds weight Wed May 29, 02:30 PM
Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton said he lost 12 pounds in the offseason, bringing him down from 255 pounds to 243. 'It was just a personal goal that I set for myself. I'm not going to go into what it really meant because looking at my body from afar you really couldn't tell,' Newton said. 'Being that I lost the weight, nobody really could tell, either.'
| Footballguys view: Newton could be a little more explosive with the lost weight. We'll see if he can continue to progress as a passer and get the Panthers back on the right track. Newton was the 6th best fantasy QB last year. His current ADP is QB5 and he's coming off the board at 5.03. |

Panthers | Greg Hardy drops weight Fri May 24, 09:20 AM
Carolina Panthers DE Greg Hardy dropped 15 pounds in the offseason hoping to improve his speed rush. Hardy broke out with 11 sacks in 2012 after having seven combined in his first two years.
| Footballguys view: Hardy has a good closing burst and can get after the quarterback. Playing at a lighter weight should help him be quicker to the ball. He's entering the final year of his contract and is set for a big payday if he gets over double digit sacks again in 2013. |

Panthers | Kenjon Barner signed Thu May 23, 04:20 PM
The Carolina Panthers have signed sixth-round draft choice RB Kenjon Barner. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
| Footballguys view: Barner is an exciting change of pace back. He's behind Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams on the depth chart right now and may not get many snaps in 2013. Barner has good straight line speed and accelerates quickly. He doesn't break tackles and isn't creative when the hole isn't there. |

Panthers | A.J. Klein signed Thu May 23, 03:45 PM
The Carolina Panthers have signed fifth-round draft choice LB A.J. Klein to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
| Footballguys view: Klein is your classic inside linebacker who can be a two down thumper at the pro level. He sniffs out plays quickly and can be a chase tackler on plays that go away from him. Klein struggles in coverage and shouldn't be on the field during passing downs. |

Panthers | Star Lotulelei agrees to terms Wed May 22, 04:39 PM
The Carolina Panthers have agreed to terms with first-round draft choice DT Star Lotulelei. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
| Footballguys view: A fantastic first-round pick by the Panthers. Lotulelei was arguably the most disruptive interior defensive lineman in this draft class. He has an explosive first step, good snap anticipation, and violent striking hands. |
Panthers | Kawann Short signed Wed May 22, 03:08 PM
The Carolina Panthers have signed second-round draft choice DT Kawann Short to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.
| Footballguys view: Short is a big man who takes up a lot of space in the middle of the line. He can take on double teams regularly and holds up well at the point of attack. Having Short and first-round pick Star Lotulelei on the field at the same time gives Carolina an incredibly stout run defense. |

Panthers | Haven't approached Jon Beason about restructuring Thu May 16, 08:59 AM
The Carolina Panthers haven't approached LB Jon Beason about restructuring his deal.
| Footballguys view: Beason is the second highest paid player on the Panthers roster behind DE Charles Johnson. He's got a $5.2MM base salary but has a $9.5MM cap number because of a $4MM prorated bonus and a $250,000 workout bonus. The Panthers have redone the contracts of DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart but don't appear to have the same plan in mind for Beason even though he's only played five games over the last two years. |

Panthers | Restructure DeAngelo Williams' deal Wed May 15, 09:07 AM
The Carolina Panthers restructured RB DeAngelo Williams' contract. He was in the third season of a five-year, $43 million contract and was scheduled to earn $5 million with an $8.2 million salary cap number for 2013. Williams will still receive $5 million in cash this year, but the deal has been restructured in a way that reduces his cap number to $5 million, a cap savings of $3.2 million that leaves the team $8.46 million under their adjusted 2013 salary cap number of $126.232 million. Williams was scheduled to earn $4.75 million in non-guaranteed base salary with a $250,000 workout bonus this season. Under the renegotiated contract, Williams' base salary was lowered to $850,000 and his workout bonus reduced to $150,000. The remaining $4 million was converted to a signing bonus, which will be prorated against the Panthers' cap at $800,000 per season through 2017.
| Footballguys view: This move should keep Williams from being a post June 1st cut. His role has been reduced and he'll play as the second RB in the team's RBBC alongside Jonathan Stewart. |

Having only played five games over the last two years the team will ease Beason back onto the field in training camp.
