Panthers | Cam Newton begins throwing    Mon Jun 26, 10:42 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) began light throwing Monday, June 26, for the first time since offseason shoulder surgery. He threw 45 passes to athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion. 'Obviously, it's still not 100 percent, but seeing the ball come out of my hand in a throwing motion was good. When I say it's not 100 percent, I'm noting the range of motion part,' Newton said. 'Like if you sleep with your legs hanging off your bed the whole night, you're going to wake up and be super stiff. Or like sitting on your hands, or sitting in an awkward position and finally getting up and moving - that's how I feel.'

Footballguys view: Newton has missed offseason work as he's been recovering from shoulder surgery. The plan is to have him ready sometime in training camp. At the start of camp, Newton may be eased into action. Reports have been positive about his recovery and with a new bevy of weapons around him Newton should be a QB1 for fantasy owners...and he has a chance of ending the year as a top-5 player at his position.

Panthers | Devin Funchess needs more targets    Sat Jun 24, 11:03 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess didn't receive enough targets last year, according to head coach Ron Rivera, and general manager Dave Gettleman agreed that Funchess wasn't used properly.

Footballguys view: Funchess suffered a sophomore slump in 2016, and he's looking to bounce back this year. It's going to be difficult to 'break out' given the collection of talent the Panthers added this offseason. Rookie RB Christian McCaffrey is a big play runner and a fantastic receiver out of the backfield (or the slot). Rookie WR Curtis Samuel has 'adios' speed and can turn short passes into long gains. We can comfortably project Funchess for 40-ish catches in 2017.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's size an asset    Sat Jun 24, 10:42 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's weight was never an issue, according to general manager Dave Gettleman, and Gettleman said Benjamin doesn't need to be fast to be effective. 'Kelvin's speed is vertical,' Gettleman said. 'He makes it up in a different way. (His) ability to make people miss is to run through them.'

Footballguys view: When a wide receiver is weighing near 280 pounds then that's a problem. Benjamin does have the size to box out defenders in the red zone and rip the ball away at the high point. His weight becomes an issue when talking about conditioning and having the stamina to stay effective as the game goes on. Ron Rivera said Benjamin was 'a little heavy' to begin the offseason, but reports indicate he's worked himself into better condition as OTAs and minicamp went on. Hopefully he doesn't lose the progress he's gained during the break before training camp.

Panthers | Mario Addison expects more work    Wed Jun 21, 04:38 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Mario Addison said he expects to receive more snaps this season but does not care if he starts. 'I feel they are going to give me more snaps,' Addison said. 'That's good. The more snaps the better. I'm glad that I gained their trust and they believe that I can get the job done. Whenever they throw me out there I am going to make it happen.'

Panthers | Greg Olsen could hold out    Wed Jun 21, 10:21 AM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen doesn't rule out holding out of training camp for a new contract.

Footballguys view: Olsen has a cap hit this year of $10.35 million with $6.6 million in dead money per Spotrac.com. He's under contract the next two years at a base salary of $6.5 million, and Olsen ranks 12th among tight ends in guaranteed money. One of the best tight ends in the league at age 32, Olsen believes he can play another five years in the pros. Olsen attended minicamp, and there have been no previous signs that he would hold out for training camp.

Panthers | Russell Shepard shines    Mon Jun 19, 12:16 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Russell Shepard consistently got open from the slot this spring and caught everything thrown his way, according to beat writer Joseph Person.

Footballguys view: Shepard is a bit of the forgotten man in the Panthers offense. He'll compete with rookie sensation WR Curtis Samuel for the no3 WR job in Carolina behind Kelvin Benjamin and Devin Funchess.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin back in shape    Mon Jun 19, 12:11 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin appears to have worked himself back in shape, in the opinion of beat writer Joseph Person. Head coach Ron Rivera said that Benjamin didn't weigh the reported 280 pounds in April, but he might have been 270 pounds. On the final day of minicamp, Benjamin reached down to catch a pass a couple of inches off the ground and got both feet inbounds.

Footballguys view: Pictures surfaced earlier this offseason where Benjamin looked like he could play in Big Momma's House 4. It's a good sign that Benjamin has worked himself into better shape. He has the ability to gash defenses and his size makes him a great target in the red zone. Benjamin has a current ADP of WR29 (6.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Michael Oher may be cut    Mon Jun 19, 12:11 PM

Carolina Panthers OT Michael Oher (concussion) may not be in the team's plans as he remains in the concussion protocol.

Footballguys view: The Panthers could save $4.5 million against the salary cap by cutting Oher, who would likely qualify for the maximum $1.1 million a year under the league's injury protection benefit.

Panthers | Ron Turner hired    Sat Jun 17, 08:24 AM

The Carolina Panthers hired Ron Turner to serve as a consultant to the coaching staff Friday, June 16. He had previously served as the head coach at Florida International University from 2013 to 2016 and last worked in the NFL as the quarterbacks coach for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2012.

Footballguys view: Turner was 10-30 during his time as head coach of the Golden Panthers. "He'll work closely with the offense as far as evaluating the things that we're doing, evaluating our opponents," head coach Ron Rivera said. "And then he'll also do some stuff for (defensive coordinator) Steve Wilks, looking at what we're doing and explaining how people might try to attack our defense."

Panthers | Cam Newton still on track in his rehab    Fri Jun 16, 03:29 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) did not throw during minicamp, but his recovery from shoulder surgery is still on track. Head coach Ron Rivera said last week he expected Newton to throw, but clarified that statement this week.

Footballguys view: All reports about Newton's recovery have been positive to this point. He remains on track for the start of training camp.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey wants to do it all    Thu Jun 15, 11:49 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey had his first practice Thursday, June 15, and he said he hopes to be used in as many ways as possible.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey can do it all for the Panthers. They can use him as a big-play running back or game-breaking receiver out of the backfield...or lined up from the slot. We're excited to see the multiple ways the Panthers will use the rookie in the preseason.

Panthers | Greg Olsen looking for new deal    Tue Jun 13, 10:36 PM

Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen hopes to receive a new deal that would pay him like one of the top tight ends in the NFL, according to sources. His $7.5 million per year average ranks seventh among tight ends in the NFL.

Footballguys view: The Panthers need to do right by Olsen as he's one of the best in the league at his position. He's been attending minicamp, and there's no sign of a holdout coming for the veteran. At this time, the Panthers have around $15.7 million in cap space according to OverTheCap.com.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey to miss two days    Mon Jun 12, 06:08 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey will not be allowed to participate in the upcoming minicamp until Thursday, June 16, because Stanford is still having final exams.

Footballguys view: The NFL rule prohibits rookies who played at quarter-system schools (like Stanford) to join their pro team until the school's final exams are complete. Stanford students won't be done with exams until Wednesday evening, so therefore McCaffrey has to wait until Thursday to make his on-field debut with the veterans. This rule has kept McCaffrey out since rookie minicamp.

Panthers | No throwing for Cam Newton    Mon Jun 12, 06:07 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will not throw during the minicamp this week, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: The team has been encouraged by Newton's recovery from shoulder surgery. They'll work him at minicamp without throwing so they can have him ready to go for training camp.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel to wear many hats?    Fri Jun 9, 09:51 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel will establish himself as one of Carolina's best receivers, according to NFL.com analyst Gil Brandt, and Brandt believes Samuel could have a Percy-Harvin-type impact as a rookie.

Footballguys view: That's what the team drafted him for. The second-round pick can line up at wide receiver or running back and can be used as a weapon all over the field. The ability to one day be a WR2/WR3 for fantasy owners is there, but a year of transition at the pro level may be necessary. Consider the talented rookie a boom/bust pick at the end of your draft (current ADP of WR70 14.05 in 12-team PPR leagues).

Panthers | Cam Newton ahead of schedule    Mon Jun 5, 01:24 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is ahead of schedule with his rehab and expected to throw on the side during Carolina's three-day minicamp next week, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Newton will work directly with trainer Ryan Vermillion, and it is unknown how much he will throw.

Footballguys view: Newton had surgery a little later than some would have liked, but all signs point to him being ready by training camp. With the added weapons around him (RB Christian McCaffrey, WR Curtis Samuel), Newton has a better fantasy outlook. After struggling in 2016 and finishing as the no17 fantasy QB, Newton should be able to break back into the top 10 in 2017.

Panthers | Wyatt Houston joins Carolina    Wed May 31, 02:10 PM

Free-agent TE Wyatt Houston (Chiefs) signed with the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, May 31. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also waived TE DeSean Smith (undisclosed) after the two sides reached an injury settlement.

Footballguys view: Houston was a chain-mover in college at Utah State. The Chiefs picked him up as an undrafted free agent this year, but he was cut after rookie minicamp in early May. Half of his receptions in 2016 went for first downs, but Houston has a lot of work to do in order to even make the practice squad in Carolina.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel back at practice    Tue May 30, 12:00 PM

Carolina Panthers second-round pick WR Curtis Samuel (personal) returned to practice Tuesday, May 30, after missing OTAs last week for personal reasons.

Footballguys view: Samuel is a super athletic playmaker who is just learning the nuances of the WR position. The Panthers should work in a package of plays just to get the ball in his hands. As he grows into his position, Samuel could make plays like Tyreek Hill does for the Chiefs.

Panthers | Devin Funchess remains out    Thu May 25, 10:37 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (ankle) remained out of drills during OTAs Thursday, May 25.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in 2015, Funchess has had a disappointing pro career. With the additions of RB Christian McCaffrey (1st round) and WR Curtis Samuel (2nd round), Funchess is going to find himself behind in the pecking order. He needs to get healthy and start impressing on the practice field.

Panthers | Coach defends Kelvin Benjamin    Thu May 25, 09:22 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has been facing unfair criticism, according to head coach Ron Rivera, and Rivera said Benjamin has 'looked great' on the field.

Footballguys view: It seems like everyone on social media has been fat shaming Benjamin over photos surfacing from camp where he looks out of shape. Benjamin is not where he needs to be physically, but he's got plenty of time to get there before training camp starts.

Panthers | Devin Funchess sits out    Wed May 24, 11:53 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Devin Funchess (ankle) is being held out of drills Wednesday, May 24, due to a rolled ankle.

Footballguys view: There's a lot of question marks around Funchess as he enters his third season in the pros. His numbers didn't go up last year (23-371-4) after posting 31-473-5 as a rookie in 2015. He ended the 2016 season on IR due to a late-season knee injury, and now he'll miss valuable time with this ankle injury. With the addition of pass-catching weapons like RB Christian McCaffrey and WR Curtis Samuel, the targets for Funchess could keep dwindling.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly held out    Wed May 24, 11:52 AM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (back) is being held out of drills Wednesday, May 24, due to lower back tightness.

Footballguys view: Kuechly is a pros pro, so there's no need to have him out there if he's a bit banged up. The Panthers will wisely monitor the veteran, just like they did when they held him out the final six games of the regular season due to a concussion.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey done until mid-June    Fri May 12, 03:03 PM

Carolina Panthers first-round RB Christian McCaffrey will not be allowed to visit the team's facility until mid-June after Stanford holds its commencement exercises.

Footballguys view: He's still taking classes at Stanford, but McCaffrey was at rookie minicamp last week. McCaffrey will miss a portion of OTAs, but he should be able to catch up with installation without a problem.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track     Mon May 8, 08:02 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is making progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery and is on schedule for the regular season, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin trying to shape up     Mon May 8, 04:08 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has been receiving extra treatment at the Panthers' facility for purposes of general fitness and well-being, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: There was a big hullabaloo last week when Benjamin showed up to offseason workouts out of shape. There's plenty of time for him to get his conditioning right before the start of the regular season. Benjamin didn't have the bounce-back year some were expecting last year after missing all of 2015. There's a chance Benjamin could do that this year, and the team already picked up his option for 2018.
