Panthers | Christian McCaffrey done until mid-June    Fri May 12, 03:03 PM

Carolina Panthers first-round RB Christian McCaffrey will not be allowed to visit the team's facility until mid-June after Stanford holds its commencement exercises.

Footballguys view: He's still taking classes at Stanford, but McCaffrey was at rookie minicamp last week. McCaffrey will miss a portion of OTAs, but he should be able to catch up with installation without a problem.

Panthers | Cam Newton on track     Mon May 8, 08:02 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is making progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery and is on schedule for the regular season, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Newton is unlikely to do much in the offseason. Even when we get to training camp and the preseason, we may see Newton limited as he continues to recover. All signs point to him being ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin trying to shape up     Mon May 8, 04:08 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin has been receiving extra treatment at the Panthers' facility for purposes of general fitness and well-being, according to head coach Ron Rivera.

Footballguys view: There was a big hullabaloo last week when Benjamin showed up to offseason workouts out of shape. There's plenty of time for him to get his conditioning right before the start of the regular season. Benjamin didn't have the bounce-back year some were expecting last year after missing all of 2015. There's a chance Benjamin could do that this year, and the team already picked up his option for 2018.

Panthers | Two Panthers picks sign    Fri May 5, 08:43 AM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel, a second-round pick, and DE Daeshon Hall, a third-round pick, signed their rookie four-year deals Thursday, May 4.

Footballguys view: Samuel is one of the most dynamic playmakers from this draft class. It will be interesting to see how the Panthers unleash him on opposing defenses. Samuel can line up in multiple positions (running back, slot receiver, wide receiver), and he's got "Adios" speed with the ball in his hands.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey signs deal    Thu May 4, 10:13 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey signed his standard four-year rookie contract Thursday, May 4.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey is going to be a great weapon for the Panthers offense. He's not a big back, but he can run between the tackles with great patience. McCaffrey is fantastic as a receiver -- either out of the backfield or even split out wide. The Panthers should do what they can to get him the ball in a multitude of ways. Fantasy owners in dynasty rookie drafts should be considering him for the no.1 overall pick.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's option exercised    Tue May 2, 02:12 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin's fifth-year option was picked up Tuesday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Benjamin had a fantastic rookie season, but he missed all of 2015 due to a knee injury and then registered a disappointing season in 2016. The option is only guaranteed for injury, so it doesn't automatically lock Benjamin onto the roster in 2018. Benjamin should be looking for a bounce-back season in 2017.

Panthers | Curtis Samuel to be used primarily in slot    Mon May 1, 10:08 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Curtis Samuel said that the team is going to use him 'primarily as a slot receiver,' and that he'll also sometimes be in the backfield.

Footballguys view: Samuel was one of the most dangerous players in college football with the ball in his hands. He's super fast, lightning quick and capable of stacking moves on top of moves to create space. Samuel is not a natural hands catcher, and he'll body catch too many throws. We'll see if he can work on that and then thrive in his role with the Panthers.

Panthers | Carolina adds Fred Ross as UDFA    Sat Apr 29, 10:36 PM

The Carolina Panthers agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent WR Fred Ross (Mississippi State) Saturday, April 29. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ross was a productive receiver in the SEC, although he might lack starter upside in the NFL. He still can make the roster if he can beat out practice squad receivers like Damiere Byrd and Keyarris Garrett.

Panthers | Kelvin Benjamin's weight causing concern    Sat Apr 29, 08:50 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Kelvin Benjamin is overweight, according to head coach Ron Rivera, and it's a concern. Benjamin, listed at 6-5, 245 pounds, was rumored to weigh 280 pounds, but Rivera disputed the report. He did not offer a specific weight, but he said Benjamin is a 'little heavy' right now and is working hard to lose the weight.

Footballguys view: Benjamin's weight was a reported problem at Florida State, and he was also in and out of the doghouse last year. Devin Funchess's development has stalled out and the team didn't bring in very much help in free agency (Charles Johnson and Russell Shepard) after letting Ted Ginn go to New Orleans and Corey Brown to Buffalo. Second-round pick Curtis Samuel is one to watch with 2016 UDFA Keyarris Garrett also a talented and productive name to remember if Benjamin flames out.

Carolina Panthers OG Taylor Moton said the team told him he will be used as an offensive tackle.

Panthers | Carolina adds Taylor Moton    Fri Apr 28, 09:35 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected OG Taylor Moton with the 64th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: An experienced starter who was on the line for Western Michigan four years. He has the size to be dominant at the point of attack, though his movements are a bit stiff and he needs to improve his footwork. His physical abilities are there, his technique isn't yet.

Panthers | Carolina selects Curtis Samuel    Fri Apr 28, 07:56 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Ohio State WR Curtis Samuel with the No. 40 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Cam Newton sure doesn't have excuses with this and the Christian McCaffrey pick. Both he and Samuel are playmakers and the Panthers should find all sorts of ways to use both versatile players.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey draws lofty praise    Fri Apr 28, 12:04 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey drew a comparison to the Hall-of-Famer Curtis Martin from general manager Dave Gettleman shortly after the team selected him Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: Let's slow our roll here. It's nice to be excited, but this is kind of ridiculous on several levels, and that is coming from someone who likes McCaffrey a lot. He's a versatile, dangerous back but Hall of Fame-Curtis Martin-similar? That's a leap for a guy who has never played an NFL down. Hyperbole aside, we agree with the general assertion that McCaffrey has the potential to be very good.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey to fill many roles    Fri Apr 28, 12:37 AM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey will be used in a similar capacity to his time at Stanford, according to head coach Ron Rivera, who also indicated McCaffrey will serve as a punt returner.

Footballguys view: A multipurpose weapon, McCaffrey can bring some juice to this offense and will also be a big weapon for quarterback Cam Newton. We like where he landed and think his upside for fantasy is pretty strong.

Panthers | Carolina in love with Christian McCaffrey     Thu Apr 27, 10:10 PM

Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey has 'elite skills,' according to general manager Dave Gettleman. 'So much value there,' Gettleman said. 'He was a guy we targeted.'

Footballguys view: He can do a lot of different things very well and he's faster than people expect. He doesn't have the size to run people over but he can make them miss and teams can use him so many ways, it's ridiculous. The Panthers are going to love this guy.

Panthers | Carolina selects Christian McCaffrey    Thu Apr 27, 09:07 PM

The Carolina Panthers selected Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey with the No. 8 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: His draft week rise is finally over. With Jonathan Stewart aging, McCaffrey is going to see reps sooner than later. He's not a big back and struggles at times to break arm tackles but he can do everything else - catch the ball, create his own yards, carry a big load - and shows tremendous patience when looking for his holes. Not as huge as Leonard Fournette and not going to wear defenses down the same way, but an very talented back in every other way. We like him here and he should see a lot of work sooner than later

Panthers | Carolina could trade back    Tue Apr 25, 05:26 PM

LSU RB Leonard Fournette's availability may dictate whether or not the Carolina Panther trade back from their No. 8 overall selection in the NFL draft, according to NFL Network's Mike Garofolo.

Footballguys view: The Panthers could take Christian McCaffrey (Stanford) with the 8th pick as he's been connected with the franchise. There's a small chance they could move back just a bit and still get McCaffrey. The Colts, Eagles and Broncos are likely destinations for the Stanford all-purpose back.

Panthers | Christian McCaffrey on Carolina's radar?    Fri Apr 21, 09:30 PM

Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey can run, catch and 'carry the load' and is one of the every-down running backs in the 2017 NFL Draft, according to Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman.

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) is 'on schedule'' to be ready for training camp after having arthroscopic shoulder surgery on March 30, according to general manager Dave Gettleman.

Footballguys view: Newton is going to miss all of the offseason program, but he should be able to ramp things up in training camp. The team will wisely monitor him closely and ease him back into action.

Panthers | Jordan Willis meets with Carolina    Wed Apr 19, 05:06 PM

Kansas State DE Jordan Willis met with the Carolina Panthers Wednesday, April 19.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have the 8th pick in the first round, and that may be a bit high for Willis. There's a chance he's a late first or early second round pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Willis is one of our favorite players in this draft class. He's incredibly smart and does a good job of diagnosing plays as they unfold in front of him. Willis plays to the echo of the whistle and is known as a leader in the locker room.

Panthers | Cam Newton to be restricted at OTAs    Mon Apr 17, 11:00 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton (shoulder) will be restricted from throwing throughout organized team activities, but he'll be able to participate in the two weeks of strength and conditioning and physical rehabilitation that makes up Phase 1. He should also be able to take part in Phases 2 and 3, with the exception of anything that might put stress on his right shoulder.

Footballguys view: That's the wise move. The Panthers will take it easy on Newton likely up to and maybe even a bit through training camp. They want him ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Panthers | Carolina to meet with two prospects    Mon Apr 17, 06:44 PM

Tennessee RB Alvin Kamara and Ohio State RB/WR Curtis Samuel are scheduled to meet with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, April 18.

Footballguys view: The Panthers could take Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey with the 8th overall pick. If they pass on McCaffrey, then perhaps Kamara or Samuel would be options in the second round.

Panthers | Kawann Short signs extension    Mon Apr 17, 09:45 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Kawann Short signed a five-year, $80 million deal with the Panthers Monday, April 17, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Short was reportedly seeking a deal that paid him more annually, but $16 million per year is nothing to sneeze at. It makes him the third-highest paid 4-3 defensive tackle in the league behind Ndamukong Suh and Fletcher Cox. Short may not get 11.0 sacks like he did two years ago, but 5-7 sacks is quite reasonable for the stout run defender.
