Jaguars | Paul Posluszny still starting?    Mon Jun 29, 04:07 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Paul Posluszny (pectoral) is still expected to be a three-down player despite coming off a torn pectoral, according to The Florida Times-Union's Ryan O'Halloran.

Footballguys view: Posluszny is a tackling machine when healthy. Even with lack of durability concerns, IDP fantasy players should consider him a top-5 ILB in re-draft leagues. Projecting him for around 100 tackles in 2015 is not out of the question.

Colts | Nate Irving ahead of schedule    Sun Jun 28, 09:39 AM

Indianapolis Colts LB Nate Irving (knee) is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and has a chance to be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Chuck Pagano.

Footballguys view: The Colts could use him rotating into the middle of the linebackers, swapping out with Jerrell Freeman when necessary. He just signed a three-year deal, and the team is certainly betting on him helping solidify the run defense.

Bengals | Vontaze Burfict is a question mark    Wed Jun 24, 08:57 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict (knee) is working his way back from microfracture surgery on his knee and is viewed as a question mark heading into training camp.

Footballguys view: Burfict exploded in 2013, but injuries took him out of 2014.The knee is a concern and starting off training camp on the PUP list would be concerning. If he's healthy, he should be a fantasy stud, but there seems to be real doubt as to whether he will be healthy.

Patriots | Several could be PUP candidates    Wed Jun 24, 06:12 PM

New England Patriots OT Sebastian Vollmer (shoulder), DE Chandler Jones (hip), LB Jerod Mayo (knee) and LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) are all candidates to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Patriots | Jerod Mayo not fully healthy    Sun Jun 21, 10:05 AM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (knee) did not participate in offseason workouts and still is not 100% from the torn patellar tendon he suffered last season.

Footballguys view: Mayo suffered the injury back in October, ending his season for the second year in a row (in Week 6) prematurely. He took a massive pay cut to stay with the team earlier this offseason, and the timetable for his actual return is unknown. There's a chance he could begin training camp on the PUP list.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney ahead of schedule    Sat Jun 20, 09:04 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is progressing so well from microfracture surgery that the new goal is to have him on the field for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he didn't make much of an impact last year as a rookie. Inactive for most of the season, Clowney only appeared in four games and made a total of seven tackles for the year. Reports have been positive about his recovery, but we won't know how the cartilage in his knee regenerates until he gets back to the football field in a full role. He may be ready for the start of training camp, but the Texans will ease him into action.

Ravens | C.J. Mosley to be ready for training camp    Fri Jun 19, 02:25 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB C.J. Mosley (wrist) said he'll be full-go once training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Mosley is recovering from wrist surgery and practiced in a limited capacity while wearing a brace during minicamp.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall will run soon    Wed Jun 17, 05:50 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (foot) will begin running next week. Marshall had surgery on his injured foot in March.

Footballguys view: Marshall is a key part of the new Broncos defense. As the strong-side inside linebacker (SAM) in Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense, Marshall should get plenty of tackles. Watch his progress in training camp.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain attending minicamp    Wed Jun 17, 02:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain (knee) is attending the team's minicamp this week but is not expected to participate in any of the drills.

Footballguys view: The veteran linebacker sat out voluntary OTAs earlier this year as he recovered from arthroscopic surgery on his right knee. The plan is to have him eased back at some point during training camp.

Saints | Junior Galette avoids surgery    Tue Jun 16, 08:32 AM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) won't require surgery on his pectoral injury after meeting with Dr. James Andrews.

Footballguys view: The Saints need Galette on the field to boost their pass rush. The injury should require rest and rehab. We'll know more when this team gets closer to training camp.

Raiders | Sio Moore does some work    Sun Jun 14, 10:17 AM

Oakland Raiders LB Sio Moore (hip) was able to participate in some team drills during the minicamp this week, and the team hopes he will be able to full participate when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: According to this report, the team was happy with Moore's progress in team drills. This hip injury will just take time to get over, and the Raiders will bring him along cautiously.

Cowboys | Sean Lee takes part in team drills    Fri Jun 12, 06:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (knee) participated in 7-on-7 drills during organized team activities Wednesday, June 10. Lee was limited to individual drills during the first two weeks of organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Getting Lee back will be a huge boost for the Cowboys defense. The team will continue to monitor his health closely as they get to (and through) training camp.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain expected to miss minicamp    Fri Jun 12, 06:43 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain (knee) is not expected to participate in the team's minicamp next week. McClain has been in Alabama this offseason recovering from knee surgery.

Footballguys view: McClain is expected to be ready by the start of training camp. He'll play at MIKE for the Cowboys defense again this year after signing a one-year, $3 million contract earlier this year.

Falcons | Vic Beasley signs deal    Fri Jun 12, 04:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Vic Beasley signed a four-year deal worth $14.5 million with the team Friday, June 12. The deal includes an $8.8 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Beasley was one of the best pass-rushers in the 2015 NFL draft. He's quick off the ball and has the ability to bend and burst around the edge. Beasley has a good bag of tricks as a pass-rusher, including a deadly spin move that can get him by blockers quickly and cleanly. The Falcons were looking to upgrade their defense, and Beasley will certainly help that.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney will be limited    Fri Jun 12, 11:37 AM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) should be ready for Week 1, but the team isn't planning to give him a full load of snaps right away, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: That's a smart move for the Texans. Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he only appeared in four games last year and failed to register a sack. If healthy, Clowney could be a very disruptive pass-rusher. We'll see if he can get healthy enough to be effective (and dangerous) in 2015.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson back at practice    Thu Jun 11, 04:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) was a full participant in practice Thursday, June 11, after missing the last five practices with knee inflammation.

Footballguys view: Derrick Johnson has been participating in offseason workouts, only taking a little break to rest his knee. We're not worried about his availability for the season and the Chiefs need him in the front seven so they may be cautious with him this summer.

Broncos | Shane Ray dealing with injury    Thu Jun 11, 02:41 PM

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray (quadriceps) has missed some snaps during workouts because of a strained quadriceps. Defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said the minicamp will be important for Ray to receive more reps.

Footballguys view: The Broncos would like Ray to come along more quickly to compete as a part-time pass-rusher behind Von Miller and Demarcus Ware, but it's not mission-critical. Ray should be able to give either Miller or Ware a breather, and he plays like every snap is his last. Ray should be a nice pass-rusher as a rookie for the Broncos when he's finally healthy.

Panthers | Shaq Thompson returns to practice    Thu Jun 11, 02:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson (hamstring) participated in practice Thursday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Thompson's debut was delayed by the hamstring as well as the end of Washington's school year. With Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis this could be a dangerous group of linebackers. We love that Thompson can play a Kam Chancellor-like role for the Panthers defense.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney should be ready for Week 1    Thu Jun 11, 01:40 PM

Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The Texans can't afford the 2014 first-overall draft pick to miss another year after he missed his rookie season. With questions about work-ethic and drive still on some people's minds, Clowney has much to prove in order to avoid being labeled a "bust" in his second season.

Patriots | Brandon Spikes released    Mon Jun 8, 10:13 AM

New England Patriots LB Brandon Spikes was released Monday, June 8.

Footballguys view: Well that didn't take long. Signed on May 18th, the Patriots moved on quickly from Spikes as he's currently under police investigation for a hit-and-run that hospitalized three people in Massachusetts this weekend. If cleared, Spikes may get some interest as a two-down run-stuffing linebacker.

Lions | Kyle Van Noy not completely healthy    Sun Jun 7, 09:50 AM

Detroit Lions LB Kyle Van Noy (hernia) said he is not 100% at this point but is able to fully participate in organized team activities. He has been working with the first-team defense at strongside and weakside linebacker.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in 2014, Van Noy's rookie season was hampered by this hernia, and he missed the first eight games of the season because of it. For a player who never missed a game in college at BYU, it had to be frustrating. He's getting a fresh start this season, and he wants to carve out a role as an impact player. Van Noy constantly made plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage (63 tackles for a loss, 26 sacks) in college, and the Lions are hopeful he can play like that this season.

Saints | Junior Galette seeking another opinion    Fri Jun 5, 12:30 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) is likely to have a decision on surgery in the next week or so. Doctors are split on whether he should have surgery, and he's seeking another opinion.

Footballguys view: The reports out of New Orleans seem to indicate we could be a "week or so" away from a decision. If he needs surgery, Galette will miss a significant amount of the season.

Colts | Robert Mathis' timetable shifts    Fri Jun 5, 10:25 AM

Indianapolis Colts OLB Robert Mathis (Achilles') has shifted his timetable from being ready for training camp in August to preparing to be ready by the season opener in September.

Footballguys view: The Colts are moving things back here. Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be, but for an older player like Mathis any extra recovery time is a good thing. If he suffers any setback during recovery, then starting the season on the PUP list could be an option.

Titans | Colin McCarthy retires    Fri Jun 5, 07:30 AM

Saints | Junior Galette could be out a while    Thu Jun 4, 06:59 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) recently suffered an injury to his pectoral and is supposedly considering surgery, according to sources. The cause and extent of Galette's injury is unknown at this time.

Footballguys view: Any sort of surgery on the pectoral muscle could cost Galette six months for recovery. It would be a crushing blow for the Saints defense as Galette led the team with 10 sacks in 2014. Starting the season on the PUP list (forcing him to miss the first six weeks) may be the plan for Galette.

Chiefs | Two defenders miss workout    Tue Jun 2, 06:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) and DT Dontari Poe (back) missed organized team activities Tuesday, June 2. Johnson sat with knee inflammation while Poe sat with back pain.

Footballguys view: These key veterans don't need every snap in the offseason. Johnson is a leader the team looks to at the linebacker position. Poe is a mountain of a man who opponents find nearly impossible to move. They'll be back when these minor injuries have cleared up.

Broncos | Shane Ray signs contract     Mon Jun 1, 06:13 PM

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray signed a contract with the team Monday, June 1. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Broncos moved up in the first round for the first time under the guidance of general manager John Elway. Ray is a talented pass-rusher who plays like every snap is his last. He's an alpha male with a chip on his shoulder, and he should be able to generate a lot of pressure as a part-time player behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.

Colts | Robert Mathis to be ready for training camp?    Mon Jun 1, 03:20 PM

Indianapolis Colts DE Robert Mathis (Achilles') plans to be ready for the start of training camp Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: Getting him back on the field to rush the passer will greatly help the Colts defense. Mathis is not currently participating in organized team activities as he continues to recover from a torn Achilles', but he is training with the medical staff.

Broncos | Shane Ray practicing    Mon Jun 1, 01:55 PM

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray (foot) is participating in drills during organized team activities Monday, June 1.

Footballguys view: Ray plays with a mean streak, and he has great snap anticipation and first-step quickness. He has good closing burst to the quarterback, and he should be a great reserve player for the Broncos this year behind Von Miller and DeMarcus Ware.

Cowboys | Sean Lee impressing coaches    Sat May 30, 10:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (knee) was called a 'ball of energy' for his work during OTAs by defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli. 'He's moving well,' Marinelli said. 'We're just being smart as we get him ready to go. But he's got a lot of good quality work in.'

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. All Lee needs to do is stay healthy, and he can make a big impact on the field.

Eagles | Kiko Alonso surprising himself    Sat May 30, 09:12 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Kiko Alonso (knee) practiced without a knee brace during OTAs, and while he admitted to being a little rusty, he said he was surprised by how much he has been able to do as he returns from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: It's good to know that Alonso is on the right track. However, we expect the team to monitor him closely as he continues to recovery. There's no need to aggravate an injury in June during OTAs. The plan is to have Alonso available for the start of the regular season.

Buccaneers | Lavonte David to be extended soon?    Sat May 30, 02:19 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Lavonte David could receive a long-term extension between now and the start of training camp, according to ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers need to wrap up David ASAP. In just a few years, David is one of the best players at his position. Undersized at linebacker, David uses incredible instincts, football intelligence and a high motor to make play after play for the Bucs defense. We don't anticipate any problems in negotiations from the Bucs side because David is so damn good.

Eagles | Kiki Alonso feeling good    Sat May 30, 01:59 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Kiko Alonso (knee) said his knee has been feeling really good during organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The Eagles have a real playmaker here so long as Alonso is healthy. Alonso no longer wears the knee brace that protected the anterior cruciate ligament he tore last year.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman taking part in OTAs    Sat May 30, 10:19 AM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) has been participating in organized team activities but said his knee does not feel like it did before the injury at this point. Bowman has been wearing a brace on his knee but said it limits his quickness and mobility.

Footballguys view: Bowman has no doubt he will return to his pre-injury form, and he acknowledged that the mental side of his rehab has been as tough as the physical side. We'll see if can be a much-needed impact player for the 49ers this season.

Eagles | DeMeco Ryans practices    Thu May 28, 06:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles') practiced Thursday, May 28, although not in a full capacity. Ryans ruptured his Achilles' tendon seven months ago.

Footballguys view: The Eagles defense is getting healthier and could be really effective as we move forward. Ryan had a 110 plus tackle year in 2013, so it's not inconceivable he could replicate it this year. Overall this defense looks very promising.

Eagles | Kiko Alonso a full participant    Thu May 28, 12:41 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Kiko Alonso (knee) was a full participant in organized team activities Thursday, May 28, according to Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: The Eagles were pretty confident this would be the case when they traded for him with the Bills. Alonso and Mychal Kendricks should be an very good pairing inside for Philadelphia's defense.

Broncos | Shane Ray sits out of OTAs    Thu May 28, 08:56 AM

Denver Broncos DE Shane Ray (toe) did not participate in organized team activities Wednesday, May 27. Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak said Ray is close to returning from turf toe and will be fitted for orthotic inserts in his shoes. Ray could begin individual drills soon, Kubiak said.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have high hopes for Ray, but they can take it 'slow' with him since Von Miller and Demarcus Ware are the starters. Of course, Ray moving to outside linebacker makes every snap count, even OTAs, but he should be ready to go shortly and shouldn't have issues catching up.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain absent at OTAs    Wed May 27, 02:28 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain (knee) will not participate in organized team activities after receiving a knee scope recently, according to head coach Jason Garrett. Garrett said the knee is believed to be fine.

Footballguys view: A scope is a minor procedure, but it does take a bit of time to recover from. We'll likely see McClain near full strength by the start of training camp.

Patriots | Dane Fletcher returns    Wed May 27, 02:29 AM

Free-agent LB Dane Fletcher (Buccaneers) has returned to the New England Patriots on a one-year contract.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali recovering     Tue May 26, 07:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali (knee) said he is feeling good as he recovers from a knee scope he underwent this offseason to remove loose cartilage.

Footballguys view: There's no word on when the scope happened, but it sounds like Hali is going to be ready to go when training camp starts. Hali took a $3 million pay cut earlier this year, and he's looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2014 where he compiled only six sacks.

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict (knee) will be rehabilitating throughout the summer and has a long road to recovery ahead of him, according to head coach Marvin Lewis. Burfict is recovering from surgery on his left knee.

Footballguys view: Burfict is currently recovering from microfracture knee surgery, and his status for the start of training camp is up in the air. In fact, Burfict might not even be ready at the beginning of the regular season. He's a candidate to begin the regular season on the PUP list.

Raiders | Curtis Lofton not participating     Tue May 26, 04:02 PM

Oakland Raiders LB Curtis Lofton (undisclosed) did not participate in organized team activities Tuesday, May 26.

Footballguys view: The Raiders signed Lofton to a three-year contract earlier this year. He's a veteran leader with a ton of experience that can help out younger defenders on the team. As a seasoned veteran, Lofton doesn't need to take every single rep during the offseason.

Cowboys | Sean Lee likely to take part in practice    Fri May 22, 06:04 PM

Bengals | Vontaze Burfict's status uncertain    Fri May 22, 02:43 PM

Cincinnati Bengals LB Vontaze Burfict's (knee) status for the start of training camp is uncertain at this point. Burfict hopes to be ready for camp and does not want to be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The PUP list to start camp is different from the PUP list to start the regular season. If on the PUP list at the start of training camp, Burfict would be clear to return at any time he's ready. If on the PUP list to start the regular season, Burfict would be forced to miss the first six weeks of the season. We feel he'll be ready for Week 1, but his status for the start of training camp is clearly up in the air.
