49ers | Not thinking of cutting Aldon Smith    Thu Apr 17, 09:28 PM

The San Francisco 49ers do not plan on releasing LB Aldon Smith this offseason. Smith is expected to be suspended at the beginning of the season, but the length of the suspension is not known at this point.

Footballguys view: The Niners have a lot of thinking to do about their troubled linebacker and may want to keep Smith in house to give him support. He's incredibly talented but it's increasingly looking like he is just as troubled and abandoning him may be something they worry could make him worse.

Jaguars | Dekoda Watson to shift around    Thu Apr 17, 04:58 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Dekoda Watson will play strongside linebacker on first and second downs this year, and he'll shift to the leo position on third downs, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: Bradley knows how to get a lot out of his defenders and moving Watson around is a good way to do it. Versatility is a must for defenses in the NFL and you can expect the Jaguars to pay extra attention to players who can do more than one thing well.

Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing (knee) was medically cleared Thursday, April 17.

Packers | Clay Matthews unlikely to do much during workouts    Wed Apr 16, 04:06 PM

Green Bay Packers LB Clay Matthews (thumb) said he likely will be limited during offseason workouts because of his surgically repaired thumb.

Footballguys view: The team doesn't need Matthews to re-aggravate the injury by doing too much. They will limit him up to and including training camp if necessary.

Ravens | Rolando McClain fails conditioning test    Wed Apr 16, 12:01 PM

Updating previous reports, retired LB Rolando McClain failed his conditioning tests during his workout with the Baltimore Ravens. The test consisted of six timed 150-yard runs.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be shocked by this news. McClain was a bust for many reasons as a pro, and certainly was never a player who had outstanding conditioning. His comeback won't go further than the refrigerator if he can't get in better shape.

Ravens | Rolando McClain shows rust in workout    Tue Apr 15, 11:55 PM

Retired LB Rolando McClain (Ravens) worked out for the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday, April 15, as he attempts a comeback. The workout wasn't a smooth one in terms of conditioning, and he has a lot of rust, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: McClain showed rust when he was active. It's no surprise he wouldn't be sharp during a comeback attempt.

49ers | Aldon Smith not expected back    Tue Apr 15, 11:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith hasn't only lost the benefit of the doubt with the team, but he probably won't play with the team in 2014, according to several sources involved with the team's decision making. However, the NFL is almost certain to punish him for his latest arrest, and the team will probably wait through the legal and NFL processes before making any final conclusion.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Smith is gifted, but his off-field problems have become too much of a distraction. Hopefully he can get his life back in order and get back to starring on the football field.

Broncos | Nate Irving appears to be starter for now    Mon Apr 14, 05:02 PM

Denver Broncos LB Nate Irving appears to be the leading candidate to start at middle linebacker at this time, but the team is expected to select a middle linebacker during the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We're expecting the Broncos to add a middle linebacker in the first three rounds of the 2014 NFL draft. That rookie will compete with Irving and Steven Johnson for the starting job.

Broncos | Von Miller hopes to return better than ever    Mon Apr 14, 03:21 PM

Denver Broncos LB Von Miller (knee) said his surgically repaired knee is feeling good and hopes to play better than he did before he suffered his injury. 'I'm a 100 percent positive I'll be able to come back not only be the same Von, (but) I got to be better. You come back and be the same guy it's like you go 'it's the same Von again' and I got to be better,' Miller said.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Miller can come back stronger than before. His 2013 season was cut short, first by a six-game suspension than later by a Week 16 ACL injury. Adding DeMarcus Ware is huge for the Broncos. Ware gives them another elite pass-rusher, plus he's going to be a mentor to Miller. The Broncos lost Miller's mentor when Elvis Dumervil (Ravens) moved on in free agency last offseason.

Eagles | Made trade offer for Dion Jordan    Mon Apr 14, 12:00 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly offered a second-round draft pick and LB Brandon Graham to the Miami Dolphins for LB Dion Jordan, but were rebuffed, a league source said.

Footballguys view: Graham is not a fit for the team's 3-4 defense. If they can't trade him, the team may just release Graham. He's in the final year of his contract, and Graham has a $3.3 million cap number. There's actually more in dead money left on his deal ($3.4 million) than he'll draw in annual salary this year.

Dolphins | Rejected deal for Dion Jordan    Sun Apr 13, 11:59 PM

The Miami Dolphins reportedly rejected a trade offer from the Philadelphia Eagles for LB Dion Jordan, according to a league source. The Eagles offered a second-round draft pick and LB Brandon Graham.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins could hold out for the Eagles first-round pick. We don't think they would surrender that even though Jordan is highly thought of by Chip Kelly. Jordan played for Kelly during his time in college at Oregon.

49ers | Aldon Smith arrested at LAX    Sun Apr 13, 09:13 PM

Updating a previous report, San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith was arrested Sunday, April 13, at Los Angeles International Airport after he made a threat that he possessed a bomb, airport police said. Smith reacted in a belligerent manner to a second security screening when he was in a security line. After making the bomb threat, he proceeded to the gate and airport police were summoned. He was detained and subsequently arrested. 'We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment,' general manager Trent Baalke said.

49ers | Aldon Smith detained    Sun Apr 13, 06:44 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Aldon Smith was reportedly detained by police at Los Angeles International Airport over the weekend. A man, believed to be Smith, was belligerent in the security line and said something about having a bomb.

Footballguys view: 49ers GM Trent Baalke released this statement: "We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith. As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment." We'll wait to see what facts come out before commenting about any potential impact on Smith or the team.

Eagles | Tried to land Dion Jordan    Thu Apr 10, 04:02 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles reportedly made a play to trade for Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan roughly two months ago, according to a respected league source. The Eagles are believed to have offered a second-round pick and LB Brandon Graham for Jordan. The Eagles would have picked up the remainder of Jordan's four-year, $20.572 million deal.

Footballguys view: We knew the Eagles weren't quite done with their moves (although they might be now) and we knew the Dolphins were rumored to be looking to dump Jordan. It's enormously premature for the Dolphins to do so, and even more insane given that they moved up for him but the Dolphins never seemed to know what to do with him. The Eagles' offer was generous so perhaps Miami was less eager than reported.

Giants | Jameel McClain should start    Thu Apr 3, 09:07 PM

New York Giants LB Jameel McClain should start at one of the starting outside linebacker spots this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: The Giants defense played well down the stretch in 2013, but they need youth and they need some playmakers. McClain had some success with the Baltimore Ravens but not quite consistently enough to stay with the team. We'll quickly see what defensive coordinator Perry Fewell gets out of the young veteran.

Giants | Spencer Paysinger expected to compete for job    Thu Apr 3, 09:07 PM

New York Giants LB Spencer Paysinger is expected to compete with LB Jacquian Williams for one of the starting outside linebacker jobs during training camp.

Footballguys view: Expect some additions via the drafty in May as well. The Giants defense was good towards the end of last year but the departure of Justin Tuck leaves a hole the need to fill, even if they fill it at linebacker.
