Vikings | Minnesota hoping to extend three key players    Sun May 20, 03:09 PM

Minnesota Vikings WR Stefon Diggs, DE Danielle Hunter and LB Anthony Barr are the three players the team is hoping to sign to lucrative deals this offseason, according to Chip Scoggins of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune.

Footballguys view: Diggs is in the final year of his rookie contract and is set to make a little over $700,000 in 2018. The Vikings spent a ton of money to get QB Kirk Cousins, but they should be able to find a way to get Diggs a contract.

Dolphins | Miami to get trio back on field for OTAs    Sat May 19, 10:05 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill (knee), LB Raekwon McMillan (knee) and CB Tony Lippett (Achilles') are all expected to be on the field in some capacity next week, although it is still uncertain how much work all three will actually do, according to Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post.

Footballguys view: Tannehill is the one fantasy owners (and the Dolphins) will be monitoring closely during camp. He missed all of last year with this knee injury, prompting the Dolphins to go out and sign Jay Cutler. Now, Tannehill is back for one more (and final?) season as the starter. With Brock Osweiler, Bryce Petty and David Fales behind him the Dolphins don't have many choices other than to see if Tannehill can not only regain his form but show that he's got more potential than he's shown as a pro.

Chicago Bears WR Allen Robinson (knee), LB Leonard Floyd (knee) and OG Kyle Long (elbow, neck, shoulder) could all start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, in the opinion of The Chicago Tribune's Brad Biggs.

Footballguys view: Robinson is the player fantasy owners are monitoring closely here. All reports about Robinson's recovery have been positive and Bears coach Matt Nagy said Robinson is "ahead of the game" in his rehab.

Eagles | No timetable for Jordan Hicks    Thu May 17, 05:01 PM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles LB Jordan Hicks (Achilles') does not have a timetable for his return even though he said he is ahead of schedule.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick out of Texas in 2015, Hicks has only played a full 16-game season once in his career. Last season, the Achilles' injury limited him to just seven games. Things seem to be on track in his recovery, and having Hicks out there would be a boost for the Eagles defense.

Ravens | Terrell Suggs not considering retirement    Wed May 16, 09:51 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB Terrell Suggs said he plans to play beyond the 2018 season and believes he will continue to play for the Ravens during that time.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick all the way back in 2003, Suggs is still capable of playing at a high level. He's set to make $4 million in 2018, the last year of his current contract.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith no longer wearing brace    Sun May 13, 11:28 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith is no longer wearing a brace on his left ankle and foot due to drop foot. He said he hasn't worn it since resuming workouts in February.

Footballguys view: Two years removed from his major knee injury, Smith is poised to do more for the Cowboys in 2018. He started only six games in 2017 but appeared in every regular season contest. We'll see if without the brace Smith begins to look like the player he once was in college at Notre Dame.

Colts | Indy adds Rakeem Nunez-Roches    Fri May 11, 06:50 PM

The Indianapolis Colts claimed DE Rakeem Nunez-Roches off waivers from the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, May 11. The team also waived LB Joshua Perry.

Footballguys view: The Colts now take over Nunez-Roches' entire $1.9 million salary for 2018. It's a bit of an odd pairing given the Colts defensive scheme, but we'll see if a fresh start can do Nunez-Roches some good.

Raiders | Derrick Johnson terms    Thu May 10, 10:42 AM

Updating previous reports, Oakland Raiders LB Derrick Johnson's one-year, $1.5 million deal includes a $200,000 signing bonus and $500,000 guaranteed. The deal is worth a maximum of $2.25 million.

Footballguys view: It's a safe deal for both sides. If Johnson still has 'it' the Raiders get a pretty reasonably priced linebacker and if he doesn't, it wasn't a costly error.

Free-agent LB Derrick Johnson (Chiefs) agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract with the Oakland Raiders on Friday, May 4.

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Ryan Shazier (back) was placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, May 2.

Footballguys view: He's not going to play this year, and we've known that for some time...the Steelers are just making it official here. It was inspirational to see Shazier walking on stage at the 2018 NFL draft, and we hope he can continue on the right path back to full strength.

Broncos | No option for Shane Ray    Wed May 2, 12:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray won't have his fifth-year option exercised.

Footballguys view: Ray had an injury-plagued 2017, with a wrist injury limiting him to eight games. He had flashed as a part-time player with the Broncos earlier in his career, and Ray had 8.0 sacks just two years ago. Things change quickly around here, and it looks like the selection of Bradley Chubb in the first round led to the Broncos deciding they can move on from Ray after this year.

Carolina Panthers LB Shaq Thompson's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, April 23, according to a source. He is now under contract through 2019.

Footballguys view: Thompson is being groomed to eventually take over completely for Thomas Davis. With Davis up there in age (and suspended the first four games of 2018), Thompson should get the largest role he's had as a pro this season.

Broncos | Shaquil Barrett signs tender    Mon Apr 23, 03:29 PM

Denver Broncos restricted free-agent LB Shaquil Barrett signed his tender Monday, April 23, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Barrett had a second-round tender placed on him and that kept teams away. He'll make $2.9 million this year for one season before hitting the open market as an unrestricted free agent in 2019. The Broncos should try and sign Barrett to a long-term deal before he gets to that point.

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Bud Dupree had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, April 23. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Dupree has not been as productive as some thought he would be coming out of Kentucky as a first-round pick in 2015. However, he is coming off a career high 6.0 sacks in 2017 and is trending in the right direction. The option is only guaranteed for injury.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus at full strength    Sat Apr 21, 10:28 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (pectoral) is fully recovered from his torn pectoral muscle.

Footballguys view: More great news for the Texans here. Their defense should have the dominant look they had in 2016 with a healthy Mercilus and J.J. Watt on the field. Mercilus should be full go for OTAs and minicamp.

Broncos | Shane Ray expects option to be picked up    Sat Apr 21, 04:37 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray said he expects the team to exercise his fifth-year option this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Broncos have to decide whether or not they want Ray for the fifth season. He was injured most of last year and turned in a disappointing 1.0 sack performance for the entire season. Healthy now, Ray could push for 7-8 sacks in 2018.

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) said he currently weighs 240 pounds and plans to play the 2018 season at 240 or 245 pounds. He was down to 223 pounds at the end of the 2017 season because his wrist injury would not let him work out fully.
