Redskins | Two linebackers should be ready for camp    Mon Jul 16, 01:53 PM

Washington Redskins LB Mason Foster and Zach Brown should be ready for the start of training camp after dealing with season-ending injuries last year.

Footballguys view: A foot injury ended Brown's 2017 season, but he was leading the league in tackles for most of the year before getting shut down. Brown is a tackling machine for Washington and a top-10 ILB for IDP players. Foster missed the majority of 2017 with a torn labrum but was a top-20 linebacker for fantasy owners back in 2016. He's recovering well and we'll see if Foster can regain his form for Washington this season.

Saints | A.J. Klein should be ready for camp    Sun Jul 15, 07:59 PM

New Orleans Saints LB A.J. Klein (hernia) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: In his first year with the Saints (2017), Klein only made it through 12 games before getting put on Injured Reserve with this groin injury. The team thought Klein would do more with an increased role but that wasn't the case. Klein struggled in coverage and against the run. He should be a part-time player for the Saints in 2018, getting pulled in subpackages.

Redskins | Junior Galette unlikely to return    Sat Jul 14, 02:50 PM

Free-agent LB Junior Galette (Redskins) likely will not re-sign with the Washington Redskins, in the opinion of NBC Sports Washington's Rich Tandler.

Saints | Alex Anzalone expected to start    Thu Jul 12, 11:50 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Alex Anzalone will likely be the starting weakside linebacker this year, according to Herbie Teope of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: Anzalone has a chance to be relevant in IDP leagues if he can stay healthy - which has been a problem during his career. Demario Davis is probably the most valuable IDP linebacker in New Orleans, but Anzalone could be good competition to lead the team in tackles.

Seahawks | Bobby Wagner a tackling machine    Sat Jul 7, 10:00 PM

Seattle Seahawks LB Bobby Wagner's 518 tackles over the last four years are the most in the NFL, and since entering the league in 2012, Wagner's 776 tackles are the second most of any player.

Footballguys view: Wagner could set an even higher level of production this year if the Seahawks don't outperform expectations and end up being a losing team.

New York Jets LBs David Bass and Josh Martin will be options to start at outside linebacker opposite LB Jordan Jenkins this season.

Chargers | Denzel Perryman helps run defense    Thu Jul 5, 03:51 PM

The Los Angeles Chargers held opponents to 117 rushing yards per game last season when LB Denzel Perryman was able to play but allowed 147 yards per game when Perryman was sidelined.

Footballguys view: They need him on the field but he has played less and less since his rookie year in 2015, when he only played 14. If he can stay healthy, his numbers will likely go up, but we just don't feel confident in the former, which means we don't trust the latter will happen.

Chargers | Denzel Perryman has struggled with injuries    Thu Jul 5, 03:46 PM

Los Angeles Chargers LB Denzel Perryman has missed 15 of a possible 48 games since entering the NFL because of various injuries.

Footballguys view: The best ability is availability, and so far Perryman has not had that super-power. When he's on the field, he's a decent run-stuffing inside linebacker, but that's the only real dimension to his game. The Chargers are much better against the run with him than without him, but before we invest too much in him and his low-end LB2 upside, we need to see him on the field consistently.

49ers | Reuben Foster suspended    Tue Jul 3, 03:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB Reuben Foster has been suspended for the first two games of the 2018 season for violating the NFL's personal conduct and substance-abuse policies.

Footballguys view: It appeared Foster was facing a much longer suspension, if not a release after a domestic violence incident and drug possession arrest this offseason. The domestic violence charges were recanted, so Foster got a relatively light punishment from the league. He'll miss games against Minnesota and Detroit. Third-round pick Fred Warner is a strong candidate to fill in for Foster.

Texans | Zach Cunningham bulks up    Mon Jul 2, 01:04 PM

Houston Texans LB Zach Cunningham has bulked up to 240 pounds this offseason because he believes he could be more physical as a run stopper and blitzer if he is bigger. He reported at 229 pounds last season.

Jets | Darron Lee seeing things faster    Mon Jul 2, 08:46 AM

New York Jets LB Darron Lee is getting better by seeing things faster, according to linebackers coach Mike Caldwell. He'll be the primary play caller on defense.

Footballguys view: The Jets are hoping Darron Lee takes a big step forward and along with free agent acquisition Avery Williamson, forms a stout cornerstone for this linebacker corps.

Rams | Mark Barron to return during camp    Sat Jun 30, 10:13 PM

Los Angeles Rams LB Mark Barron (shoulder) will return to the field at some point during training camp, according to head coach Sean McVay.

Footballguys view: The Rams have a hole at inside linebacker beside Barron after they traded Alec Ogletree to the Giants earlier in the offseason. Barron's health will be important, although the Rams ILBs jobs will be made easier by the best defensive line in the league playing in front of them.

Vikings | Anthony Barr could become free agent after 2018    Sat Jun 30, 10:49 AM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr could become a free agent after the 2018 season if the team is unable to sign him to a contract extension, in the opinion of Joel Corry of CBSSports.com. The franchise tag for linebackers is expected to be about $16.325 million, with a salary cap of approximately $190 million, and the Vikings may have difficulty holding on to him at that price.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick out of UCLA in the 2014 NFL draft, Barr is in the final year of his rookie contract and playing on the fifth-year option. He's spent this offseason working on his pass-rushing moves, and Barr is trying to prove that he's more than a two-down player. Barr has struggled to impact as a pass rusher (10.5 career sacks) and is not a player to rely on in coverage.

Buccaneers | TB could sign veteran to contract extension    Sat Jun 30, 10:29 AM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' recent release of J.R. Sweezy could provide enough salary cap space to facilitate a contract extension for LB Kwon Alexander, OG Ali Marpet or OT Donovan Smith, in the opinion of Greg Auman of the Tampa Bay Times.

Lions | Jarrad Davis to take next step    Fri Jun 29, 09:22 PM

Detroit Lions LB Jarrad Davis had 96 tackles in 14 games as a rookie last year, and Gil Brandt of NFL.com expects Davis to 'excel' in the New England-like defense head coach Matt Patricia is installing.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick out of Florida in 2017, Davis reminded many in the scouting community of Shaq Thompson (Panthers) due to his athleticism and versatility. As a rookie last year, Davis started 14 games and was a run-stuffer but he struggled in coverage. The team feels like he can do more in his second season in that department.

Eagles | Nigel Bradham suspended Week 1    Fri Jun 29, 04:14 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Nigel Bradham has reportedly been suspended for the first game of the 2018 season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bradham was a key defender for the Eagles as they made their march to a Super Bowl championship last year. He'll miss the opener due to an aggravated battery arrest in 2016. Bradham accepted a deferred sentence last year and it was only a matter of time before the league stepped in.

Vikings | Anthony Barr hopes for extension    Mon Jun 25, 05:41 PM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr said he hopes to sign a contract extension at some point but that decision is up to the Vikings.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick out of UCLA in 2014, Barr had his fifth-year option picked up for 2018 and he's set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2019. Barr isn't much of a pass rusher (10.5 career sacks) and that's why he's spent time this offseason working on his pass-rushing moves. He's got a whopping $12.3 million cap number this year, so if the Vikings extended him (with a team friendly deal) it would be to lower that number.

Titans | Jayon Brown has solid offseason    Fri Jun 22, 06:33 PM

Tennessee Titans LB Jayon Brown made a lot of plays during offseason workouts, according to TitansOnline.com's Jim Wyatt.

Footballguys view: The Titans lost Avery Williamson in free agency but have a very strong inside linebacker group. Brown will compete with sometimes Washington starter Will Compton and first-round pick Rashaan Evans for playing time next to Wesley Woodyard.

Chiefs | Frank Zombo not guaranteed roster spot    Wed Jun 20, 05:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Frank Zombo could be released during training camp because several players are ahead of him on the depth chart. He is scheduled to make $920,000 in 2018.

Footballguys view: It's an easy move for the Chiefs, and releasing Zombo would free up $1.2 million in cap space. Zombo has had around 40 tackles each of the last two years and has been a core special teams player for the Chiefs.

Bills | Lorenzo Alexander on bubble?    Mon Jun 18, 12:54 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Lorenzo Alexander could be a surprise cut during training camp in part because the team could save $1.75 million in salary cap space if he is released, in the opinion of The Buffalo News' Jay Skurski.

Footballguys view: Alexander's production took a step back in 2017 after his breakout season (12.5 sacks) in 2016. He said earlier this year that he doesn't plan on retiring and wants to keep playing. Alexander likely will see most of his playing time on special teams if he makes the 53-man roster.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware hired to coaching staff    Wed Jun 13, 11:36 AM

Retired NFL DE/OLB DeMarcus Ware was hired Wednesday, June 13, by the Denver Broncos as a pass-rush consultant on a part-time basis, according to NFL Network's James Palmer.

Footballguys view: It will be great for the Broncos to have a resource like Ware around. In this role as a consultant, Ware can dip his toe into the coaching waters without having to sacrifice a ton of time. The Broncos won a Super Bowl (50) with Ware as a defensive leader, and guys like Von Miller and Bradley Chubb should greatly benefit from his presence/guidance.

Broncos | Shane Ray will have bone fusion    Tue Jun 12, 03:03 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray's (wrist) surgery on his left wrist will include bone fusion.

Footballguys view: Ray may miss the first month of the regular season, even though he's hoping to be ready for Week 1. A first-round pick in 2015, Ray's career has been set back by injury. This wrist problem required three surgeries last year and seriously impacted his game in 2017. Without Ray, 2018 first-round pick Bradley Chubb will get plenty of time to showcase his pass-rushing ability.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly aiming for training camp    Tue Jun 12, 11:39 AM

Updating previous reports, Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly (shoulder) is aiming to be ready for training camp after having shoulder surgery.

Broncos | Shane Ray will have surgery Thursday    Mon Jun 11, 07:09 PM

Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) will undergo surgery on his left wrist Thursday, June 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Ray's wrist injury required three surgeries last year and he struggled playing through the injury. This year, we'll see 2018 first-round pick Bradley Chubb likely start on the outside opposite Von Miller. The hope is that Ray only misses two or three regular season games, but he could return sooner than expected.

Bears | Leonard Floyd not a fan of a brace    Fri Jun 8, 09:09 AM

Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd (knee) has worn a knee brace during organized team activities, but he felt it was restrictive.

Footballguys view: When healthy, Floyd can get after the quarterback. We'll see how he progresses during training camp and the preseason. He hopes to shed the brace before the season starts.

Broncos | More on Shane Ray    Thu Jun 7, 08:08 AM

Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos LB Shane Ray (wrist) will have his fourth surgery on his left wrist in less than a year. He'll have a clean-up surgery related to the previous one and will likely miss the start of camp.

Footballguys view: At points this offseason, there has been talk in Denver about rookie Bradley Chubb replacing Ray as the big time pass rusher for the Broncos across from Von Miller. This makes that argument null, as this will cost Ray at least some of his 2018. Denver declined Ray's 2019 option, so he is a free agent after this year.
