Patriots | Jerod Mayo a rarity for New England    Sat Apr 25, 08:18 PM

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo was drafted in the top 10 of the NFL Draft in 2008, making him one of just two players drafted in the top 10 in head coach Bill Belichick's 15 seasons with the team.

Footballguys view: Yes. A history lesson here....and that's about it. The Patriots are usually drafting at the end...or near the end...of the first round because they play deep into the playoffs most seasons.

Panthers | Luke Kuechly's option picked up    Sat Apr 25, 07:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Luke Kuechly's fifth-year option was exercised Saturday, April 25. Kuechly will make $11.1 million in 2016.

Footballguys view: The biggest no-brainer decision in the history of the planet.

Eagles | Philly pursuing Marcus Mariota?    Fri Apr 24, 05:54 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota could be selected by the Philadelphia Eagles if the team could make trades with the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans, according to one draft rumor.

Footballguys view: Of course they're looking to add Mariota. The rumor states the Eagles would trade QB Sam Bradford to the Browns for the 19th overall pick, then the Eagles would trade DT Fletcher Cox, LB Mychal Kendricks, the 19th overall pick and the 20th overall pick to the Titans for the second overall pick where they would select Mariota.

Lions | Stephen Tulloch ready    Fri Apr 24, 10:55 AM

Detroit Lions LB Stephen Tulloch (knee) said he could play Thursday, April 23, if necessary, seven months after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Expect the Lions to take it easy on Tulloch, regardless of how he feels. We can expect some minor work during OTAs and then they'll ease him in during training camp. One would also assume they will ask him to avoid hurting himself again while celebrating.

Ravens | C.J. Mosley to be limited in workouts?    Thu Apr 23, 04:34 PM

Updating a previous report, Baltimore Ravens LB C.J. Mosley (wrist) could be limited in offseason workouts with a wrist injury. 'I'm going to do everything I can. I don't know how much physically I can do. I'm definitely going to be out on the field,' Mosley said.

Footballguys view: Mosley is a stud linebacker, and the Ravens would be wise to just take it easy on him as he recovers from this injury.

Ravens | C.J. Mosley expects to take part in workouts    Wed Apr 22, 12:09 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB C.J. Mosley (wrist) said he plans to participate in offseason workouts even though he underwent wrist surgery earlier in the offseason.

Browns | Two players sign tenders    Mon Apr 20, 05:44 PM

Cleveland Browns S Johnson Bademosi and LB Craig Robertson signed their exclusive rights free-agent tenders Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Bademosi totaled 12 tackles in 14 games last season while Robertson made 99 tackles with two interceptions and one touchdown in all 16 games.

Giants | Jon Beason not fully cleared yet    Mon Apr 20, 04:54 PM

New York Giants LB Jon Beason (foot, toe) still has rehabilitation to do before he is cleared for full participation in the offseason program, but said he still feels good.

Footballguys view: Beason is a seasoned veteran who doesn't need every rep of the offseason. The Giants would be wise to take it easy on him as he continues to rehab. Beason should be ready some time in training camp.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson ready for workouts    Mon Apr 20, 01:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') will be able to participate in offseason workouts, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Getting Johnson back will be a huge boost for the Chiefs defense. They just didn't look the same without him last year, and Johnson can roam around and make plays as a run-defender or in coverage.

49ers | Working on new deal with Michael Wilhoite    Fri Apr 17, 04:46 PM

San Francisco 49ers exclusive rights free-agent LB Michael Wilhoite is working with the team on a new contract, according to general manager Trent Baalke.

Broncos | Brandon Marshall undergoes surgery    Fri Apr 17, 02:59 PM

Denver Broncos LB Brandon M. Marshall (foot) underwent foot surgery last month. Marshall should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Marshall is going to be asked to do a lot in the team's new 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips. Working as the "Sam" (strong-side inside) linebacker, Marshall will clean up as a run-defender. It won't be a surprise to see him lead the team in tackles this season so long as he can stay healthy.

Broncos | Danny Trevathan back at 100%    Thu Apr 16, 09:51 PM

Denver Broncos LB Danny Trevathan (knee) participated in team-organized workouts Monday, April 13, and said he was at 100% after suffering a dislocated kneecap last season.

Footballguys view: The Broncos would still be wise to stay cautious with Trevathan. He came back from his first knee injury last year only to almost immediately suffer another knee injury. Look for the team to ease him back into action with the hopes of having him fully participate at the beginning of training camp. He will play the "bow" linebacker spot (weak-side inside) in the Broncos new 3-4 defense under Wade Phillips.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower rehab going well    Thu Apr 16, 01:53 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) is doing well in his rehab from surgery in early February on his shoulder, but he's likely to miss training camp this summer with a timetable for recovery around six to seven months. Hightower is hoping that he can be ready for the start of the regular season. 'Right now, I'm doing well. The doc likes everything he's seen. I just had my checkup. I'm right on track, if not better,' Hightower said. 'I'm not sure what I'm going to be able to do as far as OTAs and training camp and all that other stuff goes. But I'm looking forward to being back.'

Footballguys view: Hightower had surgery to repair a torn labrum and while rehab is going well, he may still miss OTAs....maybe even training camp. With Jared Mayo hurt (though he may be back sooner), things are a little thin, but the Pats don't want to rush him back.

Jaguars | Paul Posluszny extended    Thu Apr 16, 08:32 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars LB Paul Posluszny signed a one-year extension Wednesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: Not a shock as the Jaguars have to keep one of their more talented players in house, even though Posluszny struggled last season. One year isn't a huge commitment so if he can't turn it around they can cut him loose.

Seahawks | Picking up Bruce Irvin's option?    Tue Apr 14, 06:39 PM

Seattle Seahawks LB Bruce Irvin's fifth-year option is expected to be picked up for 2016.

Footballguys view: They won't have to make this move until next offseason. The team will want to see how things work out with Irvin before they commit to him with a new long-term deal.

Jets | Joe Mays signs    Mon Apr 13, 04:28 PM

Free-agent LB Joe Mays (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Mays is a two-down thumper who is shot out of a cannon as a run defender. He's a liability in coverage, and there are times when he misreads the play and gets out of position as a tackler.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman expected to ready for workouts    Fri Apr 10, 04:02 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) is expected to be on the field for offseason workouts, according to head coach Jim Tomsula.

Footballguys view: Bowman is one of the last key names left from the 49ers three-year run to the NFC title game and the Super Bowl form 2011-2013. If he can't come back full speed, the 49ers defense will be down to two players in common with the Super Bowl starting lineup in 2012, with Justin Smith pondering retirement and possibly reducing that number even further.

Buccaneers | Larry Dean signs with Tampa    Thu Apr 9, 10:36 AM

Free-agent LB Larry Dean (Bills) signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Dean is a special teams guy who played under Leslie Frazier in Minnesota a few years back. That's likely all he'll be doing for Frazier in Tampa Bay as well.

Lions | DeAndre Levy could get new deal    Wed Apr 8, 10:57 PM

Detroit Lions LB DeAndre Levy is nearing the end of his rookie contract, and team president Tom Leward mentioned Levy as a possible candidate for an extension. "In the case of DeAndre, we haven't even begun conversations with him, so I wouldn't know where those would take us, and we'll see where it goes, but every circumstance is a little bit different," Lewand said.

Footballguys view: Levy has flourished as a star outside linebacker over the last two seasons for the Lions. His 151 tackles in 2014 were good for second-best in the league. Levy can get his hands on interceptions and obviously has a nose for the ball. It would be wise for the Lions to wrap him up with a new long-term deal if at all possible.

Jets | Joe Mays interests Jets    Wed Apr 8, 11:43 AM

Free-agent LB Joe Mays (Chiefs) is of interest to the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mays is a two-down thumper who is shot out of a cannon against the run. He can't cover, but can be an intimidating presence on rushing downs.

Jets | Erin Henderson agrees to terms    Tue Apr 7, 05:11 PM

Free-agent LB Erin Henderson (Vikings) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Tuesday, April 7, according to a source. Henderson didn't play last year after he was cut by the Vikings after two arrests for drunk driving in a span of three months. Henderson completed a 30-day drug and alcohol rehab program last year.

Footballguys view: It's been more than a year since Henderson played in the NFL. His career with the Vikings was cut short by substance-abuse problems. Now that he's sober, Henderson is looking to his second chance with the Jets.

Ravens | C.J. Mosley had surgery    Sat Apr 4, 08:48 AM

Baltimore Ravens LB C.J. Mosley (wrist) underwent offseason surgery, according to league sources. The Pro Bowl linebacker is expected to make a complete recovery and should be able to participate in offseason workouts and practices.

Footballguys view: Mosley flashed playmaking ability as a rookie last year. He can hit, he can cover, and he's an intimidating player in the middle of the defense. Expect more of the same in year two.

Texans | Hope Jadeveon Clowney can return during camp    Fri Apr 3, 06:14 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) continues to recover from microfracture surgery, and the team hopes he will be able to return to the field at some point during the later stages of training camp.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the draft last year and his rookie season was a wash. He's got amazing natural ability as a pass-rusher, but this knee injury could rob him of the potential he had coming out of college.

Ravens | C.J. Mosley undergoes surgery    Fri Apr 3, 04:50 PM

Baltimore Ravens LB C.J. Mosley (wrist) underwent surgery on his wrist this offseason, according to sources. Mosley should be able to participate in offseason workouts.

Free-agent LB Nick Bellore (Jets) signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco 49ers Friday, April 3. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need all the help they can get at the linebacker position. Bellore is a standout player on special teams, and that's the role he'll have in San Francisco.

Dolphins | Spencer Paysinger signed    Thu Apr 2, 03:53 PM

Free-agent LB Spencer Paysinger (Giants) signed a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, April 2, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Paysinger should take the special teams role Jason Trusnik just left. Overall his impact will be negligible unless there are injuries.

Dolphins | Meeting with Spencer Paysinger    Thu Apr 2, 03:32 PM

Free-agent LB Spencer Paysinger (Giants) is meeting with the Miami Dolphins Thursday, April 2, according to a source.

Jets | Sign Jamari Lattimore    Wed Apr 1, 04:56 PM

Free-agent LB Jamari Lattimore (Packers) signed an undisclosed deal with the New York Jets Wednesday, April 1, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: Lattimore gives the Jets inside linebacker depth, and he can be counted on as a good player for their special teams squad.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman to return this season    Wed Apr 1, 03:47 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (knee) will return in 2015 after missing all of the 2014 season with a knee injury. Head coach Jim Tomsula said Bowman is progressing well during the rehabilitation process.

Footballguys view: Good news for the 49ers here. Bowman will be able to participate in rehabilitation at a team facility with San Francisco staff members.

Bears | Sam Acho added    Wed Apr 1, 02:16 PM

Free-agent LB Sam Acho (Cardinals) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, April 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Bears continue their defensive overhaul here. We'll see how Acho fits in the team's 3-4 defense. With only two sacks over the last two years combined, it's difficult to project him doing much as a pass-rusher. Acho has turned into a better run-defender in recent years.

Colts | Robert Mathis update    Wed Apr 1, 01:25 PM

Updating a previous item, Indianapolis Colts LB Robert Mathis (Achilles') has not started running in his rehab yet, but he's hoping to be ready for training camp this summer.

Footballguys view: The Colts are likely to put Mathis on PUP to begin training camp. Owner Jim Irsay said the worst-case scenario for Mathis would be to 're-emerge' in November of this year. That means that PUP at the start of the regular season is an option too. PUP at the beginning of the year would mean Mathis would be forced to miss the first six weeks of the season. After that time, the Colts would have three weeks to determine whether or not to activate Mathis or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain re-signs with Dallas    Wed Apr 1, 08:26 AM

Free-agent LB Rolando McClain re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Footballguys view: McClain turned his career around last year with the Cowboys. He worked well as a run-stuffer, and he also showed that he could cover. McClain can also earn $1 million in playing time incentives.

Colts | Robert Mathis hopeful for preseason    Tue Mar 31, 11:20 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Robert Mathis (Achilles') said Tuesday, March 31, that he is hopeful of playing during the preseason. However, he said that his rehab for a torn Achilles' is going slow.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't quite as severe as they used to be, but it's still a serious injury that will need to be monitored closely. The Colts defense will certainly be better with a healthy Mathis on the field.

  49ers | Desmond Bishop re-signs    Tue Mar 31, 05:19 PM

Free-agent LB Desmond Bishop (49ers) re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, March 31. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bishop could have a chance for some playing time on special teams. He played in only two games last year for the 49ers, recording two tackles. The veteran linebacker gives the 49ers depth at a position they're short-handed in.

Panthers | Sign Jason Trusnik    Tue Mar 31, 04:08 PM

Free-agent LB Jason Trusnik (Dolphins) signed a one-year deal with the Carolina Panthers Tuesday, March 31. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Trusnik started six games last year for the Dolphins where he played 397 snaps over the 16-game season. He can play inside or outside linebacker, and Trusnik is a two-down run-stuffer who can also contribute on special teams.

Link to story

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson likely to stay    Tue Mar 31, 02:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') and DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') are both pushing each other in their rehabs from torn Achilles' tendons. Both players also have a year left on their contracts. DeVito agreed to a pay cut that dropped his salary to $2.9 million. Johnson has a salary cap number of $5.2 million, and the Chiefs are only around $2.85 million under the 2015 cap. Kansas City could create more room by releasing Johnson, but the Chiefs are expected to hang onto him.

Footballguys view: Johnson can clean up as a run-stuffer if healthy. The Chiefs would be wise to keep him around even though his cap number is a bit higher than they perhaps would like it to be.

Patriots | Rolando McClain leaves without contract    Mon Mar 30, 07:44 PM

Free-agent LB Rolando McClain (Cowboys) had a positive meeting with the New England Patriots Monday, March 30, but left without a contract.

Footballguys view: McClain revamped his pro career last season with the Dallas Cowboys. They've been lowballing him so far this offseason, but this meeting with the Patriots might prompt the Cowboys to make a better offer. McClain played 606 defensive snaps in 2014, with 119 coming on third down.

Cowboys | Interested in Lance Briggs    Mon Mar 30, 05:39 PM

Free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears) has drawn interest from the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have interest in Briggs because they might lose Rolondo McClain in free agency. Briggs missed half of 2014 as he dealt with a groin injury. If healthy, Briggs feels like he can still play at a high level.

Buccaneers | Interested in Lance Briggs    Mon Mar 30, 05:37 PM

Free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears) has drawn interest from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: Briggs played for Bucs head coach Lovie Smith during his time with the Bears. He needs to stay healthy after missing half the 2014 season due to a groin injury. If added, Briggs would give the team veteran leadership.

NFL | Lance Briggs confident he can still play    Mon Mar 30, 05:37 PM

Free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears) still thinks he can 'perform at an elite level.' He'll turn 35 years old this November. Briggs has drawn interest this offseason from the San Francisco 49ers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: The veteran linebacker has to stay healthy in order to prove that he can still be an impact player at the pro level. Briggs played in only eight games in 2014 before going on Injured Reserve with a groin injury.

Eagles | DeMeco Ryans to be ready for camp    Mon Mar 30, 04:57 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB DeMeco Ryans (Achilles') said he will be ready for training camp in July after coming back from his second torn Achilles' tendon since 2010.

Footballguys view: He will likely skip the organized team activities and minicamp, however. Ryans said he is right on schedule in his rehab after missing the final nine games of 2014.

Jets | Erin Henderson to visit    Sun Mar 29, 06:53 PM

Free-agent LB Erin Henderson (Vikings) is scheduled to visit the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Henderson has two drunk driving arrests, and that could be giving teams pause when considering him as an offseason addition. If signed, Henderson would give the Jets veteran depth at the linebacker position.

Vikings | Have shown interest in Brandon Spikes    Sun Mar 29, 09:49 AM

Free-agent LB Brandon Spikes (Bills) has received interest from the Minnesota Vikings, but the two sides have not been able to agree on financial terms.

Footballguys view: Spikes is still a two-down thumper who arrives at the ball with natural violence. The Bills are interested in bringing him back, but the price needs to be right. If he's getting interest from the Vikings, then Spikes' price tag could go higher than what Buffalo is willing to pay.

49ers | Desmond Bishop to visit    Sun Mar 29, 09:40 AM

Free-agent LB Desmond Bishop (49ers) is scheduled to meet with the San Francisco 49ers Monday, March 30, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bishop played in two games for the 49ers last year. He's bounced around to three different teams since the Packers selected him in the sixth round of the 2007 NFL draft.

Bills | Would like Brandon Spikes back    Sat Mar 28, 02:12 AM

Free-agent LB Brandon Spikes (Bills) would have a home with the Buffalo Bills once again, as general manager Doug Whaley expressed interest in bringing Spikes back.

Footballguys view: The Bills made this clear at the scouting combine earlier this year. Nigel Bradham and Preston Brown can be penciled in as starters in Rex Ryan's 3-4, and behind them are unproven the Ty Powell, Randell Johnson, and Jimmy Gaines. Spikes would be an upgrade over those three, and he could be brought back if the price is right.

Patriots | Dont'a Hightower to miss several months    Thu Mar 26, 07:52 PM

New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower (shoulder) will miss six to seven months after undergoing surgery on a torn right labrum.

Footballguys view: Hightower's availability for the beginning of the regular season could now be in jeopardy. We could see the Patriots decide to put him on the PUP list to begin the season. If that happens, Hightower would be forced to miss the first six weeks of the regular season. After that time, the Patriots would have three weeks to decide whether or not to activate Hightower or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Buccaneers | Danny Lansanah signs tender    Thu Mar 26, 05:36 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Danny Lansanah signed his one-year tender Thursday, March 26.

Footballguys view: As an exclusive rights free agent, Lansanah didn't have much of a choice but to sign his tender. Lansanah played in 16 games last season, recording 81 tackles, three interceptions and 1.5 sacks.

Lions | Stephen Tulloch will start    Thu Mar 26, 11:12 AM

Detroit Lions LB Stephen Tulloch (knee) will be the starting middle linebacker when he is able to return from his torn anterior cruciate ligament. Tulloch is making good progress in his rehab but may sit out offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The Lions need to firm the middle up with the departure of Ndamukong Suh and have to hope that Tulloch is indeed fully healed and doesn't celebrate himself into another injury.
