Saints | Dannell Ellerbe restructures    Wed Feb 10, 01:01 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe restructured his contract Wednesday, Feb. 10, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Injuries have forced Ellerbe off the field for most games over the last two years. He was set to count $5.9 million against the cap in 2016, and there's no way the Saints were going to pay him that price.

Broncos | DeMarcus Ware plans to return    Mon Feb 8, 11:25 PM

Denver Broncos DE DeMarcus Ware said Monday, Feb. 8, that he intends to continue playing. He is entering the final year of his contract. 'I got a lot of gas in the tank,' Ware said. '(Von Miller) was the one that added the gas to the fire for me, so that's why I'm playing the way I'm playing right now. I don't think about retiring.'

Footballguys view: Good news for the Broncos here. With Ware and Von Miller rushing the passer, the Broncos will maintain their status as the best defense in the league. Entering the final year of his deal with the Broncos, Ware has a $11.6 million cap number.

Saints | Three more players released    Mon Feb 8, 05:21 PM

New Orleans Saints LBs David Hawthorne and Ramon Humber and WR Seantavius Jones were released Monday, Feb. 8.

Footballguys view: Jones was the player to watch here, but only in the deepest of deep dynasty leagues. His size, wingspan and leaping ability might get him a spot in camp with another team. Undrafted out of Valdosta State in 2014, Jones has bounced on and off the team's active roster and practice squad.

Falcons | Two defenders released    Mon Feb 8, 03:07 PM

Atlanta Falcons SS William Moore and LB Justin Durant were released Monday, Feb. 8.

Footballguys view: Durant was an ineffective starter for the Falcons in 12 games this past season. The move creates a little over $2 million in cap space for the Falcons. Moore has the ability to be a playmaker, but he's missed 29 games (including five in 2015) over the past five years. There's $3.3 million in dead money remaining for Moore, but the Falcons did free up around $3 million with this transaction.

Panthers | No limitations for Thomas Davis?    Sun Feb 7, 01:38 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) isn't expected to be limited in Super Bowl 50, according to head athletic trainer Ryan Vermillion. Davis will wear a pad on his arm but he will not wear a cast.

Footballguys view: It's simply amazing that he's going to be able to play with this injury. Davis is a bad ass, and he's certainly proving that by playing in the Super Bowl...doctors think what he's doing is near superhuman.

Broncos | Von Miller expected to receive tag    Sun Feb 7, 01:16 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Von Miller likely will receive the franchise tag this offseason if the two sides are not able to agree on a long-term contract, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This has been the expected move by the Broncos for some time. It became even more evident when they extended the contract of DE Derek Wolfe back in mid-January. With the franchise tag, the Broncos will have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal that could pay Miller well over $100 million.

Panthers | Thomas Davis expected to start    Fri Feb 5, 12:50 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) is expected to start in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, according to head coach Ron Rivera. 'Yes, yes I do (expect Davis to start) based on everything I'm seeing from him right now and what the doctors have talked about -- they talk about him every day and we go over everything he's done and what they're seeing. That's been a huge plus.' Rivera said. 'He actually took a shot in the arm yesterday and said 'I'm fine. That felt pretty good.''

Footballguys view: Davis has overcome three ACL tears. Whatever limitations this injury puts on his abilities should be balanced out by the intensity of the moment and medicine/equipment to allow Davis to operate the way he normally would on the field.

Panthers | Super Bowl practice report for Thursday    Thu Feb 4, 07:36 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Jared Allen (foot) and LB Thomas Davis (forearm) participated fully in practice Thursday, Feb. 4.

Panthers | Thomas Davis, Jared Allen on track    Thu Feb 4, 12:08 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) and DE Jared Allen (foot) remain on track to play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos after both practiced Wednesday, Feb. 3. Allen was limited, but the move was precautionary, according to head coach Ron Rivera. Davis was a full participant and wore a protective cast over his arm. Rivera said Davis will have his arm looked at by doctors again Friday, Feb. 5, but his full practice load was an indication he'll play.

Footballguys view: Sounds good for both guys and once you get them on the field it's going to be tough to get them out of the game. It's the Super Bowl of course.

Panthers | Thomas Davis using hard brace    Tue Feb 2, 12:20 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) was using a 'hard brace' instead of a cast on his broken right arm in practice Monday, Feb. 1, and thinks he might play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos while wearing it.

Footballguys view: Davis won't be a 100 percent against the Broncos, but that's not going to keep him off the field. Range of motion could be an issue with the brace, but we can still see Davis making big plays in Super Bowl 50.

Panthers | Thomas Davis may be limited    Mon Feb 1, 04:40 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) said he could be limited in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos, but he has every intention of playing in the game. He returned to practice and used a cast Monday, Feb. 1.

Panthers | Thomas Davis optimistic    Thu Jan 28, 03:22 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) said he's still looking forward to playing in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos despite breaking his forearm in the NFC Championship. 'A plate and probably around 11 or 12 screws in my arm right now,' Davis added. 'It is what it is.' Thomas didn't practice Wednesday, Jan. 27, or Thursday, Jan. 28, but it looks like he'll still be able to play in the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: We don't know how effective he will be if he plays, given the injury. You can't blame him for not wanting to miss the game though, even if his participation is limited.

Panthers | Thomas Davis had plate put in arm    Wed Jan 27, 05:17 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) had a plate put into his broken forearm during surgery Monday, Jan. 25, but head coach Ron Rivera can't imagine that Davis won't play in the Super Bowl against the Denver Broncos. Rivera also said Davis will wear some sort of protective cast or splint on his arm. 'I'm not doubting Thomas,' Rivera said.

Footballguys view: Our very own Dr. Jene Bramel notes a couple of things here. First; the location of the injury is not in a spot where it will hinder his movement. Second; Davis is a tough player who has dealt with a lot more severe injuries before. This basically comes down to a pain-tolerance issue, and we think Davis will be fine for Super Bowl 50.

Texans | No surgery for Jadeveon Clowney    Wed Jan 27, 05:08 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) is feeling better and will not need surgery this offseason on his injured foot, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The first-overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft, Clowney has played in only about half of the possible games. We've seen some flashes from the naturally gifted pass-rusher, but he needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his enormous potential.

Broncos | Von Miller biggest free agent    Wed Jan 27, 04:26 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent LB Von Miller figures to be at the top of the Broncos' priority list this offseason, especially coming off a dominating performance in the AFC Championship. Denver's other big-name impending free agents on defense include DE Malik Jackson and LB Danny Trevathan.

Footballguys view: We're expecting Miller to get the franchise tag when possible. Then, the Broncos would have until mid-July to get a long-term contract done with Miller. With his play in the postseason, Miller is in line to be the next $100 million linebacker.

New England Patriots LB Jerod Mayo (pectoral) underwent surgery Tuesday, Jan. 26, to repair a torn pectoral muscle, a source said. He is expected to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Mayo's body isn't holding up. He's now ended three of the last four season on Injured Reserve with a major injury. Mayo is entering free agency in 2016, and there may not be many teams lined up to add the injury-prone veteran linebacker.

Panthers | Thomas Davis healing    Tue Jan 26, 04:38 PM

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (forearm) is 'healing nicely,' according to head coach Ron Rivera. Davis guaranteed that he would play in Super Bowl 50 against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: Our very own Dr. Jene Bramel believes that Davis should be able to play barring any setbacks. This injury is not in any area that would impede the range of motion in his arm or wrist. Davis is a stud, and he should be ready to go for Super Bowl 50.

'If everything goes well, it is my understanding this is something he can play with,' Rivera said.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have two weeks to get Davis ready. He's one of the best in the game at his position, and the Panthers defense would not be as strong without Davis on the field.

Carolina Panthers LB Thomas Davis (arm) said that he suffered a broken right forearm in the NFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24, but added that he will play in the Super Bowl as long as he can't do further damage by playing with the injury.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson unlikely to be tagged    Sat Jan 23, 06:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson is likely to fetch around $6 million per season, similar to the deal Cleveland Browns LB Karlos Dansby is playing for. The franchise tag for linebackers is expected to be around $14 million and that is not likely to be a realistic option.

Footballguys view: After the season-ending loss to the Patriots, Johnson expressed his desire to stay with the Chiefs. He may not give them a huge hometown discount, but we could see the two sides coming to an agreement before Johnson hits the open market.
