Jets | Jordan Jenkins looking to improve    Sun May 21, 04:47 PM

New York Jets LB Jordan Jenkins has been working on improving his pass rush skills this offseason.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has been in Atlanta training with former NFL DE Chuck Smith this offseason. A run-stuffing linebacker, the Jets made Jenkins their third-round pick in 2016. He's only learning the nuances of rushing the passer but he has the heart and hustle to make a leap in 2017.

Jets | Lorenzo Mauldin drops weight    Sun May 21, 04:43 PM

New York Jets LB Lorenzo Mauldin has lost 10 pounds this offseason in hopes of regaining his rookie year agility.

Footballguys view: Mauldin was known as a productive hustle player and pass rusher coming out of Louisville as a third-round pick in 2015. In 20 games over the last two years (only seven in 2016), Mauldin has only 6.5 sacks and 33 total tackles.

Baltimore Ravens LB Kamalei Correa said he is more comfortable with the defensive scheme and hopes to win the starting inside linebacker job next to LB C.J. Mosley.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Boise State in 2016, Correa has intriguing upside as a pass-rusher because of his quick-twitch athleticism. Correa said he has been working with defensive coordinator Dean Pees and linebackers coach Don Martindale this offseason to improve his play.

Redskins | Junior Galette making progress    Tue May 16, 02:19 PM

Washington Redskins LB Junior Galette (Achilles') has begun running and lifting, but he is expected to be held out of team drills until training camp, according to head coach Jay Gruden. Ultimately, when Galette returns will be up to Galette and the team trainers.

Footballguys view: If Washington can get anything out of Galette this year they should consider it a bonus. He's missed the last two seasons fully due to Achilles' problems and may never be the player he used to be. We should get an update on his status around the start of training camp.

Cardinals | Deone Bucannon had surgery    Tue May 16, 01:36 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Deone Bucannon (ankle) recently underwent ankle surgery, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Bucannon's goal is to return to action by early September.

Footballguys view: Bucannon missed three games last year after suffering a high ankle sprain. This surgery was to clean up a lingering problem according to Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. With his Week 1 status in question, we could see Bucannon put on the PUP list to start the season. That would force him out the first six weeks of the regular season. After that, the Cardinals would have a three-week window to decide whether or not to activate Bucanon or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Falcons | Deion Jones added weight    Tue May 16, 12:19 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Deion Jones was encouraged to add weight in the offseason, and he weighs 230 pounds. He wants to play at that weight or at 235 pounds.

Footballguys view: Jones was listed around 220-ish last year as a rookie with the Falcons. He's their best cover linebacker, and Jones should be able to retain his lateral agility with 10 extra pounds (or so) of muscle.

Lions | Tahir Whitehead moving to OLB    Mon May 15, 06:50 PM

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson remains on track    Sun May 14, 04:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') said he remains on schedule in his recovery and hopes to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Johnson is the heart and soul of the Chiefs defense, and when he's on the field he's always around the ball. This is the second time Johnson has had an Achilles' injury, so expect the team to take it easy on him in training camp.

Saints | New Orleans eyeing open competition at DE    Sun May 14, 02:32 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan has one defensive end spot locked up, but the team expects an 'open competition' between Alex Okafor, Obum Gwacham, Hau'oli Kikaha and third-round pick Trey Hendrickson for the defensive end spot opposite him.

Footballguys view: The Saints need to find a new starter opposite Jordan after not renewing the contract of Paul Kruger. Okafor has the experience advantage and has an 8.0 sack season (2014) on his resume (when he was with the Cardinals). Hendrickson, the rookie from FAU, is known as a hustle player who just won't quit. He can get the quarterback with bend, burst and a burning desire to make a play. Hendrickson may be best suited as a rotational player, but the upside is there for him to be an effective starter.

Cardinals | Daryl Washington released    Thu May 11, 01:55 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Daryl Washington was released Thursday, May 11. Washington was reinstated from his suspension two weeks ago and has not played in the NFL since 2013.

Footballguys view: It's been three years since Washington played a down in the NFL. His second chance could come with a team like the Raiders or the Bengals...but it's not a lock that someone will be willing to add him even though he showed great talent when playing.

49ers | NaVorro Bowman not being shopped    Thu May 11, 01:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') is not on the trading block, contrary to reports. General manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan released a joint statement Thursday, May 11, that made it clear Bowman has been a 'consummate professional' and they are excited for him to return to the field this year.

Footballguys view: Contradicting some earlier reports, it seems like Bowman will remain a Niner. Of course, the team could just be covering it's collective rear end because they couldn't get interest and now need him happy as he's stuck there.

Giants | Mark Herzlich cross-training at tight end    Wed May 10, 12:13 PM

New York Giants LB Mark Herzlich has accepted the team's challenge for him to learn the tight end position this offseason in order to address the teams need for a blocker at that position, according to NJ.com's Dan Duggan.

Footballguys view: The Giants could use a blocking tight end, and it might just be Herzlich who gets the job done best. They drafted Evan Engram (Ole Miss) in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft, but he's an "F" tight end who is there to rip the seam and star as a receiver.

49ers | Two 49ers linebackers ahead of schedule    Tue May 9, 02:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers LBs Reuben Foster (shoulder) and NaVorro Bowman (Achilles') are ahead of schedule in their rehabilitation. Foster is expected to be on the field for the start of training camp, according to general manager John Lynch.

Footballguys view: The 49ers selected Foster in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft even though he was recovering from shoulder surgery. There were reports that he may need another surgery on the shoulder, but if he's going to be ready for training camp then that's not the case. When healthy, Foster could play like Patrick Willis for the 49ers defense.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford has been working with some pass rush specialists this offseason to improve his technique, according to general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey said he wants to see continual growth from Ford in 2017.

Footballguys view: Ford has been getting better and better each year as a pro. He had a career-high 10.0 sacks in 2016, and Ford should get plenty of opportunity to best that number in 2017.

Eagles | Marcus Smith's optioned not exercised    Mon May 1, 06:27 PM

Philadelphia Eagles DE Marcus Smith's fifth-year option will not be picked up by the Eagles, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith has turned in a disappointing pro career so far with only four career sacks. The Eagles added Chris Long in free agency and they drafted Derek Barnett in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft. Smith isn't guaranteed to make the 53-man roster.

Vikings | Anthony Barr's option exercised    Mon May 1, 03:53 PM

Minnesota Vikings LB Anthony Barr's fifth-year option was picked up Monday, May 1, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A top-10 pick in 2014, Barr is now under the Vikings control through 2018. Barr had two fine seasons to begin his pro career, but he struggled in 2016 and was called out by head coach Mike Zimmer. We'll see if Barr can get things back on track this year.

Chiefs | Dee Ford's option picked up    Mon May 1, 12:44 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 1.

Footballguys view: Ford took some time to get going as a pro, but he finished with 10 sacks last year. He should once again line up opposite Justin Houston to provide the Chiefs with a dangerous pass rusher with the upside to get double-digit sacks.

Colts | Sean Spence on track to start    Sat Apr 29, 06:19 PM

Indianapolis Colts LB Sean Spence is the leading candidate to start at one of inside linebacker spots next season.

Footballguys view: Spence has been slowing working his way back to form since a devastating knee injury derailed his early career with Pittsburgh. He's a sleeper in deep IDP leagues this year.

Cardinals | Deone Bucannon's option picked up    Wed Apr 26, 01:04 PM

The Arizona Cardinals exercised the fifth-year option for LB Deone Bucannon on Wednesday, April 26.

Footballguys view: Bucannon was one of the vanguard of the safety/linebacker tweeners that are flourishing in the new pass-happy NFL. The Cardinals lost two important safeties this offseason, so Bucannon has become that much more important even though his position designation is linebacker.

Cardinals | Daryl Washington reinstated    Tue Apr 25, 05:49 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Daryl Washington was reinstated from his suspension Tuesday, April 25. Washington had multiple violations of the NFL's substance-abuse policy and also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in March of 2014. He has not played in the NFL since 2013.

Footballguys view: Washington was once an IDP stud, but he has been away from the league for so long that it's hard to know if he'll ever even make a roster again. The pass rush/off ball versatility he provided the Cardinals is en vogue with Haason Reddick (Temple) likely to go in the mid-to-late first and Tyus Bowser (Houston) possibly sneaking into the first with similar profiles, but Washington's best football is behind.
