Week 3: vs New York Jets

All WR vs NYJ

FBG says: Good matchup. Week 2 brought some noticeable steps forward for the Browns passing attack, even as top deep threat Josh Gordon was shuffled loose from the team. A week after completing just 15 of 40 throws, Tyrod Taylor hit on 22 of 30 against the Saints, utilizing a low-risk approach over the middle and in the flats. Taylor had no success downfield, however, until a 47-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Callaway tied the game in the final 2 minutes. And his back-breaking fourth-quarter interception was a terrible throw into aggressive double coverage. Taylor annually ranks among the league's leaders in deep-ball efficiency, but he's struggling to make things happen as a Brown. Without Gordon, the personnel lends itself to a short-ball game dominated by Jarvis Landry and David Njoku, neither of whom has ever shown much down the field. There's dynamism on the table, of course, in the speedy Callaway. And if Njoku's seam routes start panning out, he'll be a dangerous weapon in the Eric Ebron mold. But as things stand, this isn't a very fruitful passing game. Taylor needs more time to develop downfield chemistry with his receivers; without it, he's little more than a sanitized dump-off artist. The Jets are in the midst of assembling a workable, even dynamic, secondary. Morris Claiborne is rebuilding his career as an outside cover man, while prized free agent Trumaine Johnson and slot man Buster Skrine comprise a stout group of cornerbacks. And second-year safeties Jamal Adams and Marcus Maye have both flashed potential as centerfield playmakers. Still, armed with arguably the league's least-impactful pass rush, there's a ton of pressure on that secondary week after week. It's rare to see much heat put on by the talent-starved front line, forcing the linebackers and safeties to create pressure on blitzes. The Jets desperately need young edge rusher Brandon Copeland to keep inching forward as a playmaker. If no one makes a leap, this will continue to be a put-upon unit, one that will tire in games and allow big gains through the air.

Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 2 vs NO (7 / 5 / 47 / 0 rec)

Higgins saw an uptick in targets following the Browns' decision to move on from Josh Gordon. Higgins tied for the team lead with seven targets in the game. His first catch went for a seven-yard gain on a slant, although he fumbled at the end of the play. Fortunately for him, the fumble went out of bounds, allowing the Browns to keep possession. His biggest play came in the third quarter on a 16-yard reception off of a play action pass. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Higgins saw three straight targets but was unable to connect with Tyrod Taylor on any of them. He punctuated that series with a drop on the final target. Higgins should see more work with Gordon out of the picture, although he is likely to be third in the pecking order behind Jarvis Landry and Antonio Callaway.
