Bears | Jeremy Langford dropped passes    Mon Jun 27, 04:43 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford led all running backs in drop rate last season, with eight of 30 catchable targets hitting the ground.

Footballguys view: Langford is going to have to do better than that if he wants a three-down role with the Bears this season. With Matt Forte (Jets) moving on in free agency, the Bears are looking to Langford as their lead back. However, we should see all-purpose back Ka'Deem Carey mixed in (especially since he's a good receiver) and rookie Jordan Howard may be the best pure runner on the team's roster. It's looking like a three-headed RBBC for the Bears this year, so fantasy owners should consider Langford a RB3 in 2016.

Bears | Marquess Wilson could start on PUP list    Wed Jun 22, 04:04 PM

Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson (foot) is expected to begin the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Wilson would not be eligible to return until Week 6 if he is placed on the PUP list to start the season. WRs Josh Bellamy and Cameron Meredith were the first two names mentioned by Biggs who could play more if Wilson is sidelined.

Footballguys view: Bellamy is a core special teamer who could get more playing time with Wilson out. If there's any fantasy overflow to have here, it will more likely fall to tight end Zach Miller or slot receiver Eddie Royal. Seventh round pick Daniel Braverman could buy a temporary roster spot if Wilson starts the year on the PUP.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery makes progress on deal    Tue Jun 21, 12:38 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery has continued to talk about a long-term contract, and a new deal is possible for the receiver, who received the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: Jeffery showed faith by signing his franchise tender already. He doesn't have much leverage, but signs now indicate he may get the long-term deal he wants. We imagine his contract will look similar to what both Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) and Dez Bryant (Cowboys) received last year as franchise-tagged star WRs.

Bears | Cody Whitehair stepping up    Fri Jun 17, 12:54 AM

Chicago Bears OG Cody Whitehair has been working with the first-team offense in place of OG Ted Larsen (undisclosed), and Whitehair has been one of the bright spots of the offense, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Footballguys view: Whitehair was one of our favorite interior linemen in this year's draft. He has Vise-Grips for hands, and Whitehair has no problem controlling his man at the point of attack. He's got the movement ability to stay with his man laterally or be used effectively as a "sticky blocker" at the second level of the defense.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery fine with one-year deal    Wed Jun 15, 08:32 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said he would still like to receive a long-term deal but would be fine with his one-year deal if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement before July 15.

Footballguys view: Jeffery knows he'll get paid sometime soon and is in no hurry. He's got youth on his side and he knows how much he'll get as a free agent next year if he plays like he has before. We think he's a solid WR1/WR2 depending on how Jay Cutler and the offense play this year.

Bears | Marquess Wilson breaks foot again    Wed Jun 15, 01:45 PM

Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson (foot) re-fractured his foot, and he'll undergo surgery next week.

Footballguys view: He was just getting back into the swing of things, and now he has to have the second surgery on his foot in under a year. We feel the value is Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White anyway, and weren't depending on Wilson for anything but deep depth, but this is still disappointing to hear. He was already on the roster bubble.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery plans to report    Tue Jun 14, 06:57 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said he plans to report to training camp on time. Jeffery is participating in minicamp, but did not report for organized team activities earlier this month. He is awaiting a long-term contract agreement.

Footballguys view: Jeffery doesn't have much leverage in this situation. He signed his franchise tender already and is on the books for $14.5 million in 2016. Jeffery had to participate in mandatory minicamp since he's under contract. The two sides have until July 15th to get something done.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery reports for minicamp    Mon Jun 13, 01:38 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery reported for the start of the mandatory minicamp Monday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Jeffery had been training on his own while the team went through voluntary OTAs earlier this offseason. He signed his franchise tender, and he's guaranteed a one-year deal that will pay him $14.6 million. Since he's under contract, missing mandatory minicamp could have resulted in fines. We'll see if Jeffery and the Bears can reach a long-term agreement by the time the July 15th deadline gets here.

Undrafted free-agent QB Dalyn Williams (Dartmouth) signed a contract with the Chicago Bears Thursday, June 9. Terms were undisclosed. In a corresponding move, QB Matt Blanchard was released Thursday.

Footballguys view: It's the backup QB boogie! Neither of these guys are likely to have an impact anywhere, anytime soon.

Bears | Jeremy Langford looking to round out game    Sun Jun 5, 03:50 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford is hoping to improve on third downs, sharpen his skills in the passing game and improving his yards after contact (1.13), which was easily the worst mark among qualified running backs last season. Langford has been working with his coaches to widen his feet on contact in an effort to improve his balance and power.

Footballguys view: There are two backs behind Langford to monitor on the Bears roster. Ka'Deem Carey should be splitting time with Langford this year, but it's rookie Jordan Howard who might be the best of the bunch. There are some in the scouting community who felt that Howard was the most natural RB in this draft class not named Ezekiel Elliot. The Bears picked up Howard as a value pick in the fifth round. He's a big back who rushed for 145 yards or more in every full game he played in. Howard can make his living between the tackles, and his bruising style should lead to better numbers after contact than Langford or Carey.

Bears | Zach Miller looking to keep it going    Fri Jun 3, 02:18 PM

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller said he expects to be one of the offense's main weapons in the 2016 season. 'I think everyone as a playmaker, you expect to be that,' he said. 'I'm going to have an opportunity to show that ability and really kind of just take over from how we left off last season. I showed there were opportunities where I could make plays. That's kind of how I'm going to approach how we begin the year.' Miller accumulated 34 catches for 439 yards and a team-high five touchdown receptions in 2015.

Footballguys view: The Bears let Martellus Bennett (Patriots) move on in free agency because of Miller. Coming out of Nebraska-Omaha years ago as a converted quarterback to tight end prospect, Miller has always had the athleticism to make plays at the pro level. He finally stayed healthy and was able to prove that last year with the Bears. If healthy, Miller can be a TE2 with upside. His current ADP is TE22 (13.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bears | Signing Nate Chandler    Thu Jun 2, 07:05 PM

Bears | Jake Long to work out    Thu Jun 2, 08:26 AM

Free-agent OT Jake Long (Falcons) is scheduled to work out for the Chicago Bears Thursday, June 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Long still has a little upside left but he's on the downside of his career. At most he's going to end up as depth.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery not present    Wed Jun 1, 01:10 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery was absent at organized team activities Wednesday, June 1, and he continues to stay away from the team facility to train in South Florida.

Footballguys view: Jeffery has signed his franchise tag tender and is expected to rejoin the team for the veteran mandatory minicamp beginning in the middle of June. At this time, it seems like there's no long-term agreement coming from the Bears for Jeffery in the future.

Bears | Kevin White building rapport with QB    Tue May 31, 09:59 PM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (shin) is building chemistry with QB Jay Cutler during organized team activities (OTAs), and the rapport building is in the early stages. As far as his health is concerned, he said Tuesday, May 31, that he has felt 100 percent for months.

Footballguys view: This is great news for the Bears, and White looks like he could be a tremendous value for fantasy owners. His current ADP of WR35 (7.10) in 12-team PPR leagues is a position he could easily outperform in 2016. We feel White has at least WR2 upside for fantasy owners so long as he can stay healthy.

Bears | Leonard Floyd signs contract    Fri May 27, 05:36 PM

Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd, the team's first-round draft pick, signed a four-year deal Friday, May 27, which includes a fifth-year option. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Floyd is set to be a pass-rushing force for the Bears ASAP. He can get around the edge with a good bend and burst. Floyd has an array of pass-rushing moves to get after the quarterback. However, he needs to put on a ton of weight as he's thin and may not be able to take the pounding of an every-down player in the NFL.

Bears | Kevin White is full-go    Wed May 25, 04:07 PM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (shin) has not been limited during organized team activities. White said he is trying to use as much energy as he can and run as fast as he can after not playing at all in 2015.

Footballguys view: The Bears have big plans for White across from Alshon Jeffery and with the attention Jeffery gets, White could be in for a nice production total this season. He'll still have a decent learning curve though, as he missed all of his rookie season last year.

Bears | Chicago to use committee backfield    Fri May 20, 02:23 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford will battle with RBs Jordan Howard, Ka'Deem Carey and Jacquizz Rodgers for touches in a crowded backfield during offseason workouts. Head coach John Fox is intent on running with a committee approach after the departure of RB Matt Forte. Langford has a leg up after scoring seven touchdowns in his rookie season. However, he had only 3.6 yards per carry and 1.13 yards after contact, which ranked second to last out of 47 players with 100 carries, according to ESPN Stats and Information. Langford must also work on improving his hands after struggling with drops in 2015. Howard's bruising style appeals to the team as a complement to Langford's speed. Carey is the only back that wasn't acquired by the current coaching staff, and he's being pushed to become more versatile and to play better on third downs. Rodgers it the veteran and could be trusted more than any other rusher on third downs early in the year.

Footballguys view: Langford is the most likely to have the most touches, but this approach will make week-to-week predictability a mess. None of the three backs are particularly talented and all have different strengths. Even with Langford's possible volume, he's a risky pick compared to backs in his ADP range like Giovani Bernard and Matt Jones.

Bears | Leonard Floyd's weight not an issue    Sun May 15, 08:50 PM

Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd's weight is not an issue and the team does not plan to have him bulk up, according to defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. 'The weight thing's not a big thing with me,' Fangio said. 'He's going to weigh somewhere between 230 and 235. That's just what he's going to weigh. We knew that before we drafted him. So it's not an issue.'

Footballguys view: Floyd's lower body has always been too thin. It's not his weight, but where the weight is distributed. We'll see if he can add muscle to his lower body in an effort to hold up in the NFL.

Bears | Chicago to try out Marquis Jackson    Sun May 15, 03:00 AM

Free-agent DL Marquis Jackson, the brother of Jacksonville Jaguars DT Malik Jackson, is trying out with the Chicago Bears this weekend.

Footballguys view: Marquis Jackson played in the Arena League for the Portland Thunder. He gets off the line quickly and has the hustle to make plays as a pass-rusher. Like Malik, Marquis has a large wingspan that helps him make up ground quickly. He's a longshot, but Bears coach John Fox worked with Malik for years when the two were with the Denver Broncos. Fox will know if he can get the best out of Marquis.

Bears | Jay Cutler to have same offense    Sat May 14, 08:14 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will work with an offense that has the same shell and language as last season, according to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, and Loggains said his strong relationship with Cutler will help offset the departure of Adam Gase.

Footballguys view: Cutler was able to thrive under Gase last year. Having the same system for him this year (even with Gase gone) should greatly help Cutler continue his solid play. From a fantasy perspective, Cutler should perform like a top-20 QB and a QB2/bye week filler.

Bears | Kevin White compared to Colt    Sat May 14, 01:42 PM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White was compared to Indianapolis Colts Andre Johnson by Bears wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson. Johnson coached Johnson at the University of Miami. 'He's very similar to him. They're both big and physical and fast,' Johnson said. 'That doesn't all go together sometimes. White has hand similar to [former Indianapolis Colts] WR Reggie Wayne. So he was one of those guys where when you looked at the draft and watched television, you say this guy is going to be a bona fide player.'

Footballguys view: We're not buying the comparison. He's more like DeAndre Hopkins, if healthy and playing up to his potential. White has tremendous inside release to get open on tight coverage at the line of scrimmage. He wins at the point of the catch and does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. We'll see if White can start producing at an expected level after missing all of his rookie season in 2015.

Bears | Coach thinks Jeremy Langford can improve    Fri May 13, 08:05 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford could improve his work in the passing game, but the team likes where he is at this point, according to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. 'We like where Jeremy's at,' Loggains said. 'He needs to continue to develop. There are things he can do a better job of in the passing game.'

Footballguys view: Langford is a good all-purpose back, but we agree that he can improve his game. The Bears will be moving on from Matt Forte (Jets) this year, and Langford should have the first crack to be the lead back.

Bears | Jordan Howard will have role in 2016    Fri May 13, 08:01 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard will be used as a change-of-pace back in 2016 since he has a different style of running than RB Kendall Langford, according to offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains. 'He's a change-of-pace back. Their skill sets are different. We'll use the skill set the way it needs to be. We won't ask them to both do the same thing, but we'll find out what Howard does well and we'll play to that,' Loggains said.

Footballguys view: Howard might be the most natural runner in this draft class...yes, even above Ezekiel Elliott (Cowboys). While Elliot is an instant stud and worthy of a late first-round pick in your fantasy draft, Howard may be a pick in the late rounds that can pay off like a RB2. Watch to see if he can beat out Jeremy Langford to be the top back for the Bears.

Bears | Anthony Jefferson waived    Thu May 12, 05:37 PM

Chicago Bears DB Anthony Jefferson was waived Thursday, May 12.

Bears | Jordan Howard terms    Thu May 12, 10:40 AM

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard's rookie deal is worth $2,588,024 with a signing bonus of $248,024.

Footballguys view: We think Jeremy Langford should get the bulk of Matt Forte's 218 carries from 2015, but Howard is an intriguing back. More of a downhill runner with good size, Howard just has to show he can pass protect and he might get more carries than we expect.

Footballguys view: Whitehair was our favorite guard in this draft class. With Vise-Grip for hands, he should be able to help blast open holes for the ground game. Howard may have been the most instinctive runner in the 2016 NFL draft...yes, perhaps even better than Ezekiel Elliot (Cowboys). Now, he lacks the all-purpose game and playmaking ability of Elliot but we will be watching Howard's development with great interest.

Bears | Talks between Bears, Alshon Jeffery slow    Thu May 5, 06:13 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery has not made much progress in contract talks with the Bears at this point.

Bears | Jordan Howard goes to Chicago    Sat Apr 30, 02:35 PM

Former Indiana RB Jordan Howard was taken by the Chicago Bears with the 150th pick in the fifth round of the NFL draft Saturday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Howard's size and talent could make him a full time starter but he takes some big hits and runs with a brutal style that makes injuries a real concern. Add in his upright running style and the fact that he isn't a receiver and you're looking at a guy who is somewhat limited right now.
