Bears | Kevin White working with Jay Cutler    Sat Jul 30, 12:50 AM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White said QB Jay Cutler has taught him to use all of his speed when running routes in order to take advantage of Cutler's strong arm to put pressure on defensive backs.

Footballguys view: It may sound crazy to some, but White can't outrun Cutler's arm. As soon as he realizes that, the better it will be for their connection.

Bears | Jeremy Langford struggles as receiver    Sat Jul 30, 12:31 AM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford struggled beating defenders in one-on-one drills during practice Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Langford is supposed to be 'the man' for the Bears this year, but we don't have a ton of confidence in his game as a featured back. This is why RBs like Kadeem Carey and rookie Jordan Howard need to be on your radar. Right now, Langford has an ADP of RB23 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues. We'd rather have guys like Frank Gore (RB31) or Justin Forsett (RB33) who are going well behind Langford in similar formats.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery mum on contract talks    Thu Jul 28, 04:10 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery did not engage in discussing his failed bid to secure a long-term contract Thursday, July 28. 'Right now I'm in the process ... I'm focusing on football,' Jeffery said. 'I'm just focused on this year. Anything else will take care of itself.'

Footballguys view: Between this and Martellus Bennett's contract issues, which led to his trade, you have the wonder if the Bears think good players just grow on trees. Jeffery is one of the best young receivers in the game, an easy WR1 in fantasy and someone we think you don't just get off the street. You'd think they would want both he and Kevin White, so we expect this to get done. Still, if he leaves at the end of his contract we think Bears fans should be a bit alarmed.

Bears | Leonard Floyd carted off    Thu Jul 28, 11:16 AM

Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd (undisclosed) was carted off the field Thursday, July 28, with an undisclosed injury. An update is expected after practice.

Footballguys view: The good news is, reports say it was illness related, not a major injury. "He was sick," coach John Fox told Rich Campbell of the Chicago Tribune. "He couldn't make it through. ... He's been sick the last couple days." We hope this really is the case and he'll be back when he feels better.

Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson (foot) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 27. Wilson reported to training camp with a walking boot on his broken foot.

Footballguys view: Wilson is speedy...but he's also hurt all the time. He should begin the regular season on the PUP list for the Bears.

Bears | Jeremy Langford bulks up    Wed Jul 27, 03:12 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford has added some weight this offseason to make sure he is ready for a bigger role in the offense in 2016, according to a source. Langford is listed at 211 but currently weighs around 220 pounds.

Footballguys view: That's good news for the Bears. With Matt Forte (Jets) moving on in free agency, the pressure is on Langford to emerge as the lead back. Watch for Kadeem Carey to put up a fight for reps in training camp. Also, fantasy owners need to get familiar with rookie Jordan Howard. He's a true power back who can make his living grinding down a defense between the tackles.

Bears | Harold Jones-Quartey could start in 2016    Fri Jul 22, 06:47 PM

Chicago Bears S Harold Jones-Quartey is expected to receive the first chance to win the starting safety job opposite S Adrian Amos during training camp. S Deon Bush will also be a candidate for the starting job.

Footballguys view: The uncertainty at the position doesn't reflect depth or quality on the roster. The Bears secondary is the weakness of the defense, with the front seven starting to come into shape. Look for them to be one of the best matchups to exploit for passing games unless Pernell McPhee, Lamarr Houston, Willie Young, and first-round pick Leonard Floyd can generate enough pass rush to mask the deficiencies.

Bears | Jay Cutler ready to ascend?    Wed Jul 20, 02:45 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler had a decent season in 2015, and with Dowell Loggains promoted from quarterbacks coach to offensive coordinator, it could be another big year for the veteran quarterback. He also gets WR Kevin White back from injury, and he could have a late-career bounce back season similar to that of New York Giants QB Eli Manning, San Diego Chargers QB Philip Rivers and Pittsburgh Steeler QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Footballguys view: Let's not get crazy here. Cutler is a decent starter, but he will still make bad decisions with the football (he led the NFL in turnovers for a QB in 2014). Last year was great, but former Bears OC Adam Gase (current Dolphins HC) is gone. Cutler's relationship with Loggains will help this transition, but we can only recommend the veteran QB as a low-end QB2 for fantasy owners in 2016.

Bears | Drops are problem for Kevin White    Wed Jul 20, 02:44 AM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White struggled with drops during the offseason program. That problem will need to be addressed during the early portion of training camp.

Footballguys view: During his final year in college at West Virginia, White dropped 3.1 percent of the passes thrown his way. The average in the FBS in 2014 was 3.9 percent, so you can see how White showed better concentration than most. The point is; drops aren't a part of his game. Perhaps he's trying to do too much in the offseason as he missed all of last year. We feel that White will calm his mind and perform on Sundays. Fantasy owners should consider him a WR4 with upside.

Bears | Hot RB will be leaned on in Chicago    Mon Jul 18, 10:39 AM

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford, RB Ka'Deem Carey, RB Jordan Howard and RB Jacquizz Rodgers will be part of a committee in the backfield, and head coach John Fox plans to limit their workloads and ride the hot hand. The team wants Langford to run with a wider base and gain more yards after contact. Carey needs to build on his toughness and become a more complete back. Both figure to be part of the committee approach. Howard adds a bruiser skill set in short-yardage and goal line situations.

Footballguys view: Ah, the dreaded 'hot hand' approach. Fantasy owners are used to dealing with RBBCs since they are rampantly used across the league. Dealing with the 'hot hand' is entirely more frustrating. Langford should be the lead back most weeks, but if Carey is used more near the goal line he could be the more valuable fantasy back in certain matchups. Howard may be the most naturally talented runner from this draft class (right up there with Ezekiel Elliott), but he has to stay healthy and get used to the speed/discipline of the NFL before we can count on him as a valuable fantasy asset. Proceed with caution when considering Chicago's backs.

Bears | Chicago not sold on Alshon Jeffery?    Sat Jul 16, 01:53 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery and the Bears did not agree to a long-term deal before the deadline Friday, July 15. ESPNChicago.com's Jeff Dickerson said the disconnect between both sides is obvious, and he questioned if the Bears view Jeffery as a No. 1 wide receiver.

Footballguys view: Jeffery has a lot to play for in 2016...and that's great news for fantasy owners. With 2015 first-round pick Kevin White healthy and starting opposite Jeffery, that could open things up for the talented veteran. We wouldn't be surprised to see Jeffery catch 90 passes this year and finish as a top-10 fantasy WR. His current ADP is WR10 (2.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bears | No long-term deal for Alshon Jeffery    Fri Jul 15, 04:12 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery did not receive a long-term deal Friday, July 15, and will play under the one-year franchise tag.

Footballguys view: Jeffery has already signed his franchise tender, so there's no threat of a holdout. He'll play this season with a one-year price tag of $14.5 million. Last year, Jeffery played in only nine games. With a full 16-game season (and the likely production that comes with that), we could see Jeffery get a payday similar to what Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) and Dez Bryant (Cowboys) got last year.

Bears | No Alshon Jeffery deal in sight    Mon Jul 11, 09:36 AM

Updating previous reports, Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery would have to dramatically decrease his salary expectations for a long-term deal to be completed by the July 15 deadline for franchise-tagged players. The scenario is unlikely to happen.

Footballguys view: Jeffery has already signed his one-year franchise tender, so he's on the books for $14.5 million this season. He only played in nine games last year, so the Bears likely want to see Jeffery healthy and effective before committing to him long term.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery deal unlikely    Fri Jul 8, 08:58 AM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery is far apart in talks on a long-term deal, and there isn't much optimism a deal will get done. 'I sense that both sides really don't feel strongly about this one,' said NFL Network's Mike Garafolo. 'That's because Jeffery's got a $14.6 million tag. The Bears wanted to come in a couple of million below that.'

Footballguys view: The Bears likely want to get Jeffery for a price similar to what franchise-tagged WRs Dez Bryant (Cowboys) and Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) got last year. Bryant and Thomas make $14 million annually, and they both got over $40 million fully guaranteed. Jeffery has no leverage in this situation as he's already signed his franchise tender.

Bears | Chicago claims Connor Shaw    Fri Jul 1, 04:59 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Connor Shaw was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears Friday, July 1.

Footballguys view: We knew it wouldn't take long for some team to pick up Shaw. The Seahawks and the Saints also put in claims for the athletic quarterback. He'll compete with David Fales to be the third QB behind Jay Cutler and Brian Hoyer.

Bears | Jeremy Langford dropped passes    Mon Jun 27, 04:43 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford led all running backs in drop rate last season, with eight of 30 catchable targets hitting the ground.

Footballguys view: Langford is going to have to do better than that if he wants a three-down role with the Bears this season. With Matt Forte (Jets) moving on in free agency, the Bears are looking to Langford as their lead back. However, we should see all-purpose back Ka'Deem Carey mixed in (especially since he's a good receiver) and rookie Jordan Howard may be the best pure runner on the team's roster. It's looking like a three-headed RBBC for the Bears this year, so fantasy owners should consider Langford a RB3 in 2016.

Bears | Marquess Wilson could start on PUP list    Wed Jun 22, 04:04 PM

Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson (foot) is expected to begin the regular season on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune. Wilson would not be eligible to return until Week 6 if he is placed on the PUP list to start the season. WRs Josh Bellamy and Cameron Meredith were the first two names mentioned by Biggs who could play more if Wilson is sidelined.

Footballguys view: Bellamy is a core special teamer who could get more playing time with Wilson out. If there's any fantasy overflow to have here, it will more likely fall to tight end Zach Miller or slot receiver Eddie Royal. Seventh round pick Daniel Braverman could buy a temporary roster spot if Wilson starts the year on the PUP.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery makes progress on deal    Tue Jun 21, 12:38 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery has continued to talk about a long-term contract, and a new deal is possible for the receiver, who received the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: Jeffery showed faith by signing his franchise tender already. He doesn't have much leverage, but signs now indicate he may get the long-term deal he wants. We imagine his contract will look similar to what both Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) and Dez Bryant (Cowboys) received last year as franchise-tagged star WRs.

Bears | Cody Whitehair stepping up    Fri Jun 17, 12:54 AM

Chicago Bears OG Cody Whitehair has been working with the first-team offense in place of OG Ted Larsen (undisclosed), and Whitehair has been one of the bright spots of the offense, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Footballguys view: Whitehair was one of our favorite interior linemen in this year's draft. He has Vise-Grips for hands, and Whitehair has no problem controlling his man at the point of attack. He's got the movement ability to stay with his man laterally or be used effectively as a "sticky blocker" at the second level of the defense.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery fine with one-year deal    Wed Jun 15, 08:32 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said he would still like to receive a long-term deal but would be fine with his one-year deal if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement before July 15.

Footballguys view: Jeffery knows he'll get paid sometime soon and is in no hurry. He's got youth on his side and he knows how much he'll get as a free agent next year if he plays like he has before. We think he's a solid WR1/WR2 depending on how Jay Cutler and the offense play this year.

Bears | Marquess Wilson breaks foot again    Wed Jun 15, 01:45 PM

Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson (foot) re-fractured his foot, and he'll undergo surgery next week.

Footballguys view: He was just getting back into the swing of things, and now he has to have the second surgery on his foot in under a year. We feel the value is Alshon Jeffery and Kevin White anyway, and weren't depending on Wilson for anything but deep depth, but this is still disappointing to hear. He was already on the roster bubble.

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery said he plans to report to training camp on time. Jeffery is participating in minicamp, but did not report for organized team activities earlier this month. He is awaiting a long-term contract agreement.

Footballguys view: Jeffery doesn't have much leverage in this situation. He signed his franchise tender already and is on the books for $14.5 million in 2016. Jeffery had to participate in mandatory minicamp since he's under contract. The two sides have until July 15th to get something done.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery reports for minicamp    Mon Jun 13, 01:38 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery reported for the start of the mandatory minicamp Monday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Jeffery had been training on his own while the team went through voluntary OTAs earlier this offseason. He signed his franchise tender, and he's guaranteed a one-year deal that will pay him $14.6 million. Since he's under contract, missing mandatory minicamp could have resulted in fines. We'll see if Jeffery and the Bears can reach a long-term agreement by the time the July 15th deadline gets here.

Bears | Jeremy Langford looking to round out game    Sun Jun 5, 03:50 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jeremy Langford is hoping to improve on third downs, sharpen his skills in the passing game and improving his yards after contact (1.13), which was easily the worst mark among qualified running backs last season. Langford has been working with his coaches to widen his feet on contact in an effort to improve his balance and power.

Footballguys view: There are two backs behind Langford to monitor on the Bears roster. Ka'Deem Carey should be splitting time with Langford this year, but it's rookie Jordan Howard who might be the best of the bunch. There are some in the scouting community who felt that Howard was the most natural RB in this draft class not named Ezekiel Elliot. The Bears picked up Howard as a value pick in the fifth round. He's a big back who rushed for 145 yards or more in every full game he played in. Howard can make his living between the tackles, and his bruising style should lead to better numbers after contact than Langford or Carey.
