Bears | Jay Cutler to face open competition    Thu Mar 26, 06:20 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will head into the offseason as the team's No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart, but head coach John Fox said there will be an 'open competition' at the quarterback spot between Cutler and QB Jimmy Clausen during training camp and offseason workouts. The current coaching staff and general manager Ryan Pace have nothing vested in Cutler, and they've made it clear that money isn't the sole driver of their decisions.

Footballguys view: This is it for Cutler. If Fox and OC Adam Gase can't get him to play better, then the Bears are likely to move on next year. We're not expecting Cutler to turn it around, but it will be interesting to see how he responds to new coaching.

Bears | Shea McClellin to work inside    Thu Mar 26, 12:39 AM

Chicago Bears LB Shea McClellin will start inside at linebacker, head coach John Fox said Wednesday, March 25. Fox added that McClellin will also be worked outside as well.

Bears | Jay Cutler lacking confidence?    Wed Mar 25, 05:01 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler seemed to lack confidence last season, according to head coach John Fox. 'I think maybe he got to the point where he lacked confidence a year ago. To build that back up, it's going to take time, daily. It takes trust, like any relationship.'

Footballguys view: Cutler lacks confidence, focus, leadership...and he'll fall back on bad habits at the drop of a hat. The Bears are giving him one more year to clean his act up, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see the two sides part ways after 2015 if things don't change.

Bears | Mason Foster agrees to deal    Tue Mar 24, 06:06 PM

Free-agent LB Mason Foster (Buccaneers) has agreed to terms with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24, according to Foster's agent.

Footballguys view: This took long enough! Foster to the Bears was predicted weeks ago, but the two sides had to work out contract details. He separated his shoulder early in 2014 with the Bucs, only to return and strain his Achilles' later on. According to reports, Foster is fully healthy now.

Bears | Ray McDonald signing    Tue Mar 24, 01:53 PM

Free-agent DE Ray McDonald (49ers) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24.

Footballguys view: McDonald comes to Chicago with his fair share of baggage. On the field, he should start at defensive end for the Bears and he can slide inside to tackle when the team goes with a four-man front. Off the field, McDonald has to prove that he can make better decisions and avoid the trouble that circled him last year.

Bears | Jarvis Jenkins signs with Chicago    Tue Mar 24, 10:38 AM

Free-agent DE Jarvis Jenkins (Redskins) agreed with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24, on a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: Jenkins never developed into the pass-rusher Washington thought he would be when they selected him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft out of Clemson. In Chicago's 3-4 defense, Jenkins will be primarily an edge-setting run defender.

Bears | Dante Rosario re-signed    Thu Mar 19, 06:15 PM

The Chicago Bears re-signed TE Dante Rosario to a one-year deal Thursday, March 19. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Nothing to see here people. Rosario will continue to work as a reserve tight end behind Martellus Bennett. For the third time in his career (Bears, Broncos) Rosario will be reunited with John Fox.

Bears | Thomas Gafford signs    Wed Mar 18, 07:17 PM

Free-agent LS Thomas Gafford (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, March 18.

Bears | Interested in Dan Connolly    Tue Mar 17, 01:59 PM

Free-agent OG Dan Connolly (Patriots) is receiving interest from the Chicago Bears at the center position.

Bears | May look at Mason Foster    Tue Mar 17, 07:51 AM

Free-agent LB Mason Foster (Buccaneers) has drawn interest from the Chicago Bears, but the teams have not discussed a multi-year contract or any sort of deal.

Footballguys view: We're surprised a deal hasn't gotten done here yet. The Bears are looking to re-work their defense, and Foster would give them a veteran presence at linebacker.

Bears | Vladimir Ducasse signs    Mon Mar 16, 07:02 PM

Free-agent OG Vladimir Ducasse (Jets) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Monday, March 16. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ducasse was once a highly-touted second-round pick of the Jets in 2010. He can line up at either guard position, and he has experience playing right tackle as well. Too bad he's not very good. The Bears will see if he can win a reserve role with the team in 2015.

Bears | Antrel Rolle joins the Bears    Wed Mar 11, 11:12 PM

The Chicago Bears and free-agent FS Antrel Rolle (Giants) agreed to terms on a three-year, $11.25 million contract Wednesday, March 11, his agent confirmed. His contract calls for $5 million to be guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Rolle isn't quite the player he used to be, but he'll make some big plays here and there. The Bears get a veteran leader for the defense, but make no mistake about it...his skills are on the decline.

Bears | Eddie Royal headed to Chicago    Wed Mar 11, 11:11 PM

Free-agent WR Eddie Royal (Chargers) is going to sign with the Chicago Bears, a source said Wednesday, March 11.

Footballguys view: A good move for the Bears here. He has familiarity with QB Jay Cutler from their time in Denver, and he also is familiar with members of the coaching staff. Adam Gase, new Bears OC, was Royal's wide receivers coach when he was in Denver.

Bears | Jay Cutler to remain starter in Chicago    Wed Mar 11, 03:21 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will remain the starting quarterback in 2015, according to general manager Ryan Pace.

Footballguys view: Cutler has a hand-picked QB coach in Dowell Loggains, and the team is reportedly taking away some of the freedom for Cutler to change plays at the line and otherwise taking things off of his plate. Under John Fox this should be much more balanced offense than it was under Marc Trestman.

Bears | Eddie Royal to visit Chitown    Tue Mar 10, 11:15 PM

Free-agent WR Eddie Royal (Chargers) traveled to Illinois Tuesday, March 10, to meet with the Chicago Bears and potentially sign a contract, a league source confirmed.

Footballguys view: New Bears offensive coordinator was Royal's wide receivers coach when he was with the Broncos. He also played one season with QB Jay Cutler with the Denver Broncos, and Royal posted 91 receptions for 980 yards and five touchdowns that season.

Bears | Chicago tailoring playbook to Jay Cutler     Tue Mar 10, 02:43 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler, who is fully expected to be a part of the team's plans in 2015, will have the playbook tailored to his strengths by head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Cutler will earn $15.5 million this year on a contract that is fully guaranteed, but the new coaching regime may not hesitate to go in another direction if Cutler struggles early in the year. It's likely that the coaching staff sat down with Cutler and discussed his expectations for this season and how to reduce turnovers and bad decisions in a new scheme.

Bears | Ron Parker on the radar    Tue Mar 10, 12:19 PM

Impending free-agent CB Ron Parker (Chiefs) is on the radar of the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Parker proved last year that he could play safety as well as corner. In fact, he's a better safety than he is a cornerback, and that position versatility has increased the interest in him on the open market.

Bears | Jay Cutler staying in Chicago    Tue Mar 10, 08:51 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is fully expected to be the starting quarterback in 2015, according to sources with knowledge of the team's thinking. One source was adamant that there was 'absolutely zero truth' to recent reports that Cutler was being actively shopped for a potential trade.

Footballguys view: Cutler may be staying in Chicago, but 2015 is certainly a "make or break" year for him. If he doesn't stay in line, stay healthy and win then the Bears could be looking to move on next season.

Bears | To make push for Terrance Knighton?    Mon Mar 9, 01:34 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton is expected to be pursued heavily by the Chicago Bears. ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that the Bears have 'serious interest' in Knighton to be the anchor of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's 3-4 front.

Footballguys view: Knighton played the last two years for new Bears head coach John Fox in Denver. Knighton is regarded as one of the better run stoppers in the league.

Bears | Pernell McPhee agrees with Chicago    Mon Mar 9, 09:41 AM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent OLB Pernell McPhee agreed to a five-year deal worth nearly $40 million with the Chicago Bears Monday, March 9. The deal includes nearly $16 million guaranteed, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bears get a strong pass-rusher here in McPhee. He can line up virtually anywhere in the front seven of the defense. Last year as a reserve player, McPhee posted 7.5 sacks, 64 quarterback pressures and 24 quarterback hits.

Bears | Chicago looking for WRs    Fri Mar 6, 05:33 PM

The Chicago Bears are unlikely to use the seventh overall pick of the NFL Draft on a wide receiver, but the upcoming class of receivers gives them many options to complement WR Alshon Jeffery. They could look to University of Miami WR Phillip Dorsett, who ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash in the second round. The Bears also hosted free-agent WR Brian Hartline (Dolphins) for a visit this week. After trading WR Brandon Marshall, the current roster features WRs Josh Bellamy, Marc Mariani, Josh Morgan and Marquess Wilson. Jeffery may be moved to the No. 1 receiver role, but he averaged just four catches in the last three games with Marshall injured in 2014.

Footballguys view: Jeffery is the WR1 now, but the Bears still might add a big-name wide receiver through the draft or free agency.

Bears | Re-sign Jimmy Clausen     Fri Mar 6, 11:35 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jimmy Clausen re-signed with the team, per a league source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Clausen is reunited with John Fox. In 2010, Fox was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers when they selected Clausen in the second round of the draft. Clausen struggled as a starter, and he became a backup behind Cam Newton in 2011. He bounced to the Bears in 2014, and Clausen looked decent playing in Week 16 last year against the Lions. Clausen will backup Cutler again this year...if Cutler is not moved via trade.

Bears | Decision on Jay Cutler looming    Thu Mar 5, 07:39 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's contract is a concern, with the $10 million he's due for 2016 becoming fully guaranteed in one week.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't be surprised to see the Bears move on from Cutler if they got the right trade offer. With his $16.5 million cap hit in 2015 (with $19.5 left in dead money on his contract), the Bears would find suitors for Cutler few and far between. This is likely a make-or-break season for Cutler in Chicago. If he stays, we're predicting "break."

Bears | Brandon Marshall being shopped    Thu Mar 5, 11:20 AM

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall is being shopped by the team with the idea of trading him, according to a league source. Another league source said his belief is that the team is taking calls on Marshall. The team could move Marshall for a mid-round pick.

Footballguys view: Both Marshall and QB Jay Cutler may be on the trade block. It's likely going to be easier to move Marshall than it is Cutler. Marshall has a $9.5 million cap number this year with about $5.6 million left on his contract in dead money.

Bears | Zachary Miller signed    Sat Feb 28, 02:53 AM

Free-agent TE Zachary Miller (Bears) was re-signed by the Chicago Bears on Friday, Feb. 27.

Footballguys view: Miller is nothing more than a reserve tight end and special teams player if he makes the squad.

Bears | Demontre Hurst signs    Wed Feb 25, 06:02 PM

The Chicago Bears signed CB Demontre Hurst to a two-year contract Wednesday, Feb. 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hurst was an ERFA (exclusive rights free agent) for the Bears. This essentially meant the only team he could negotiate with was Chicago. He started two games in the nickel last year and finished the season with one interception and 30 tackles.

Bears | Chicago may pursue David Harris     Fri Feb 20, 04:51 PM

New York Jets impending free-agent LB David Harris is expected to receive interest from the Chicago Bears if he hits the free-agent market, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bears have a lot of defensive problems, but Harris will only be a portion of a fix. He could be a good rotational guy and John Fox does know his way around a defense though. It wouldn't be a bad landing spot for him.

Bears | John Fox non-committal on Jay Cutler    Wed Feb 18, 02:43 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler did not receive a vote of confidence from head coach John Fox. Fox said the team is still evaluating the position. Fox said he wants to get to know Cutler as part of that evaluation. 'We're not up against a deadline,' Fox said. 'My experience has always been that you need to gather the information and in turn, you usually make better decisions. We're in that process, and we'll keep you posted.'

Footballguys view: Not exactly a ringing endorsement, and why should Fox endorse his quarterback? Cutler has done little to prove that he's a star player in this league. Mostly, Cutler has not taken to coaching, gotten hurt, and become a player with the reputation of being a coach killer.

Bears | HC non-committal on Brandon Marshall    Wed Feb 18, 02:27 PM

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall's standing with the team for the upcoming season may be in question, but new head coach John Fox was non-committal about Marshall when asked Wednesday, Feb. 18.

Footballguys view: Marshall has a cap hit of $9.5 million in 2015, and there's $5.6 million remaining in dead money. We could see the Bears taking a chance on Marshall (and Jay Cutler) for one more season.

Bears | Meet with Josh McCown    Wed Feb 18, 01:17 PM

Free-agent QB Josh McCown (Buccaneers) met with the Chicago Bears at the NFL Scouting Combine Wednesday, Feb. 18, according to head coach John Fox.

Footballguys view: It's just science. McCown is one of the best free agent quarterbacks available, and he was good with the Bears in 2013. The Bears have Jay Cutler as the starter, but this is a make-or-break year for him.

Bears | Charles Tillman 80% healthy    Tue Feb 17, 12:25 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent CB Charles Tillman (triceps) said he is 80% healthy and hopes to be fully recovered from his torn triceps by the time free agency kicks off March 10.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Tillman could be of interest as a part-time player. Tillman's priority in signing with a team this year is to win a Super Bowl.

Bears | Charles Tillman still plans to play    Tue Feb 17, 02:39 AM

Free-agent CB Charles Tillman (Bears) still plans to return for the 2015 season. 'Obviously, I can't play until I'm like 50 or 60. But I just want to keep going. I'm feeling good. I just have unfinished business. I want a championship. I think that's my main reason (to keep playing): I'm hungry for a championship,' Tillman said.

Footballguys view: Tillman could move on from the Bears in free agency. So long as he's healed from his second triceps injury, Tillman could be a nice part-time player on a championship contender.

Bears | Tim Jennings undergoes surgery    Fri Feb 13, 06:35 PM

Chicago Bears CB Tim Jennings (knee) recently underwent arthroscopic knee surgery, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Jennings is not expected to miss much practice time this offseason. The Bears should take it easy on the veteran and ease him into action when training camp begins.

Bears | Brandon Marshall may not return    Fri Jan 30, 10:32 AM

Chicago Bears WR Brandon Marshall may not return to the team in 2015, in the opinion of ESPNChicago.com's Michael C. Wright. The thinking is that Marshall and WR Alshon Jeffery are too similar of receivers, and the team needs more diversity at the position. Wright also wrote that this was strictly a possibility, and he expects Marshall to be on the team in 2015.

Footballguys view: The Bears have gone "all in" with QB Jay Cutler this offseason. Getting rid of Marshall would go against that direction. We don't see Marshall playing anywhere else in 2015. The Bears will give this group one more chance to prove themselves. If they fail, then expect multiple changes before 2016.

Bears | Jay Feely says Jay Cutler is not a leader    Thu Jan 29, 09:45 AM

Chicago Bears PK Jay Feely said QB Jay Cutler isn't a leader off of the field. 'That's not who he is. You're going to have a vacuum there,' Feely said on Mad Dog Sports Radio. 'So you have to know that as a general manager or a head coach, 'Hey, we're not going to have that leadership from this position, so we've really got to have other guys that are going to step up and are going to be our verbal leaders.''

Footballguys view: Feely is not saying anything people haven't thought for most of Cutler's pro career. The Bears seem to be "all in" with Cutler this year. Part of that (most?) is his $19.5 million in dead money for 2015. If Cutler doesn't get it done this year, the Bears could easily cut him before 2016 as there's only $3 million left in dead money on his deal at that time. It's a make-or-break year for Cutler.

Bears | John Chiles signs Futures deal    Tue Jan 27, 05:29 PM

Free-agent WR John Chiles (CFL) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Footballguys view: The former Texas Longhorn was undrafted in 2011, but he did spend some time with the Saints and the Rams before heading up north. In the CFL, Chiles played for the Toronto Argonauts. He's a good receiver on deep routes, can track the ball well over his shoulder and has agility in the open field. Chiles' game is built on his run-after-the-catch ability and vertical speed.

Bears | Jay Cutler happy with coaching addition    Sun Jan 25, 09:06 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler reportedly once touted new quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggains to be the quarterbacks coach in 2012. The two had a 'strong, personal relationship.'

Footballguys view: The addition of Loggains suggests the Bears are giving Cutler all that he needs to succeed in 2015. It might be a last hurrah for the talented but underachieving quarterback. If Cutler struggles this season under new head coach John Fox, we could see the Bears going in a different direction at QB for 2016. Currently, there's over $19 million in dead money on Cutler's contract. However, after this year that number falls to just $3 million. It's shaping up to be a make-or-break year for Cutler.

Footballguys view: Loggains gets a chance to work with Jay Cutler. Even though Cutler is wild mechanically, he'll be a breath of fresh air compared to Johnny Manziel. The biggest challenge for the Bears is getting quality play out of Cutler. We'll see if Loggains can help the veteran quarterback.

Former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase will be hired by the Chicago Bears as their new offensive coordinator, according to a source. Gase will receive an undisclosed three-year deal.

Footballguys view: Gase follows John Fox to Chicago here. He should be able to craft an explosive offense for quarterback Jay Cutler. Whether or not Cutler runs that system to the letter remains to be seen, but we have our doubts.
