Bears | Jordan Palmer has first shot at No. 2 QB job    Wed Jul 23, 03:38 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer still has the first shot at winning the backup quarterback job, according to head coach Marc Trestman.

Footballguys view: Palmer is likely to win the backup job behind Jay Cutler this year. Last year's backup, Josh McCown, moved on in free agency and is now the starter for the Buccaneers. Palmer's main competition for the spot could be free agent addition Jimmy Clausen. The Bears picked up Clausen earlier this offseason as he was looking for a fresh start. Rookie David Fales (San Jose State) could stick on the roster as a third-string developmental quarterback.

Bears | Work out two FAs    Wed Jul 23, 02:35 PM

The Chicago Bears worked out free-agent TE Travis Beckum (Seahawks) and C Thomas Austin (Colts) Wednesday, July 23, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Talent has never been a question with Beckum. However, he's struggled to stay healthy during his brief time in the NFL. The Bears might just be updating an emergency list here.

Bears | Tim Jennings could blitz more    Mon Jul 21, 02:14 PM

Chicago Bears CB Tim Jennings said he needs to work on his pass-rush moves as he is expecting to blitz more this season from the nickel cornerback position.

Footballguys view: The Bears made multiple moves on the defensive side of the ball to improve that unit. Using Jennings more creatively will help them perform better in 2014.

Bears | Chris Conte iffy for start of camp    Mon Jul 21, 02:08 PM

Bears | Jimmy Clausen could be in line for No. 2 QB job    Sat Jul 19, 12:32 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jimmy Clausen appears poised to beat QB Jordan Palmer for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: It would be an incredible redemption story for Clausen if he makes the team. He washed out quickly in Carolina, but he's getting a fresh start in Chicago. Clausen is working under the guidance of renowned QB guru Marc Trestman. The Bears head coach should be able to get the best out of him. We'll see if Clausen looks like a new man in 2014, and we'll see how much of a fight Palmer puts up in the preseason.

Bears | Jay Cutler praised by head coach    Fri Jul 18, 02:59 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has impressed head coach Marc Trestman with how intelligent and selfless he's been to better the team. Trestman also said he's been impressed with Cutler's skillset and football smarts.

Footballguys view: Trestman and the Bears certainly believe in Cutler. They wouldn't have committed to a seven-year $126.7 million contract earlier this year. He's more comfortable in the second year of the Trestman offense, and that should lead to better production on the field.

Bears | Shea McClellin to be used as edge rusher    Thu Jul 17, 04:58 PM

Chicago Bears LB Shea McClellin is more of a blitzer in the Bears' 4-3 defense and will see some opportunities to rush off the edge this season, according to defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Bears | Coach cautious about Brock Vereen    Wed Jul 16, 03:53 PM

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman is cautious about FS Brock Vereen landing a starting job heading into training camp. "The simple fact we've rotated him with the 1's is a clear indication we think he can compete, but we're not going to anoint him yet," Trestman said. "There's no reason to think he can't put himself in position to compete for one of those jobs, but it's way, way too early."

Bears | Dante Rosario leading candidate for No. 2 TE job    Tue Jul 15, 09:00 PM

Chicago Bears TE Dante Rosario is the leading candidate to be the team's No. 2 tight end this year, according to Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com. TE Matthew Mulligan, TE Zach Miller and TE Jeron Mastrud will battle for the remaining backup spots during training camp.

Footballguys view: So long as the Black Unicorn Martellus Bennett doesn't get hurt, the backup tight end in Chicago is not fantasy relevant. Even if Bennett gets banged up there are likely better options out there for waiver wire purposes.

Bears | Ego Ferguson expected to learn both tackle positions    Tue Jul 15, 12:33 PM

Chicago Bears DT Ego Ferguson is expected to learn both defensive tackle positions. There is a chance Ferguson could get as many repetitions as the first team during training-camp and the preseason games.

Footballguys view: Ferguson is a run-stuffer who can stand his ground against double teams. He understands leverage and does a good job hand fighting in the trenches. Ferguson lacks the burst to create much interior pressure, but he can occupy space to allow linebackers behind him to make plays.

Bears | Jay Cutler more experienced in Marc Trestman's offense    Fri Jul 11, 03:38 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler believes he's more familiar with second-year head coach Marc Trestman's offense. Cutler said he should be able to think less and play faster now that he's become more acquainted with concepts and formations.

Footballguys view: We believe in Trestman's offense, and the Bears certainly are committed to Cutler. We'll see if Cutler can stay healthy and flourish in 2014. His current ADP is QB13 (9.08) in 12-team PPR leagues. It's not out of the question to think that Cutler could finish the year as a top-10 fantasy quarterback.

Bears | Craig Steltz could be on bubble    Sat Jul 5, 11:12 AM

Chicago Bears SS Craig Steltz could be on the roster bubble during training camp if SS Adrian Wilson shows that he is healthy during camp.

Footballguys view: Wilson is not the same player he used to be, but he's better than Steltz if healthy. The Bears have made numerous changes to their defense, and they should be much better on that side of the ball in 2014.

Bears | Injuries could hurt Chris Conte     Sat Jul 5, 09:27 AM

Chicago Bears FS Chris Conte (shoulder) could win one of the starting spots in training camp, but injuries could play a role. Conte sat out for the entire offseason program. "We'll see," Bears defensive coordinator Mel Tucker said. "I'll wait until camp rolls around and I'll get a report, and they'll let us know who's available and how much they can do. Whenever he's available, we'll start working him in and get him up to speed, get him the reps. He's been in the meetings. So he knows what we're doing. We're going to start over pretty much in training camp with our installation. So a lot of it will be review, and then we'll add some things as we go that we didn't cover in OTAs and the coaches' sessions. He's gotten the mental work in, in the class room. So it'll just be getting the physical reps. When he's ready, he's ready. We'll work him in."

Bears | Christian Jones impressing    Thu Jul 3, 04:45 PM

Chicago Bears LB Christian Jones has caught the attention of linebackers coach Reggie Herring. 'We've got a young Jones player from Florida State, who is doing an incredible job and flashes and shows he has a chance to be a good player.' Jones started at all three linebacker positions and then shifted to defensive end in his final season at Florida State. With his versatility, Jones could fight for time on the field if given a legitimate opportunity by the staff.

Footballguys view: Jones was one of the geniuses who failed a drug test at the Combine, which is never a good sign as it's the one time you can guarantee you'll be tested. He's very athletic and a solid tackler, and is tremendously versatile having played all over Florida State's defense. He should make the roster if he can stay out of trouble.

Bears | Two starting spots at linebacker up for grabs    Thu Jul 3, 04:38 PM

Chicago Bears LB Lance Briggs is the only linebacker assured of starting, according to the coaching staff. Briggs will start at weakside linebacker. It is expected LB D.J. Williams will win the starting job at middle linebacker, and LBs Jonathan Bostic and Shea McClellin will compete to start at strongside linebacker. It is expected Bostic will start, because he is the superior athlete, whereas McClellin could end up in some sub packages as an extra pass rusher.

Footballguys view: McClellin struggled badly on the line, so the team is trying to salvage their first round pick by moving him to the linebacker spot. Bostic is more consistent and has more upside so it wouldn't shock us to see him win the job. The Bears were atrocious defensively last year though, so anyone who performs consistently will get a shot at a starting gig.

Bears | Jonathan Bostic making adjustments    Wed Jul 2, 02:50 PM

Chicago Bears LB Jonathan Bostic has new responsibilities in defensive coordinator Mel Tucker's system. Tucker said he wants to see Bostic slow down his progressions, stay square longer, mirror the ball and fill in and fall back when necessary. Bostic said those adjustments have helped him feel more natural at his new middle linebacker position. He added that he's been able to react more and play how he's been taught. Tucker took notice; too, saying Bostic looks more comfortable, looks more consistent, is playing fast and is having fun.

Footballguys view: Bostic is a big-hitter with a nose for the ball. He arrives at the ball with natural violence, and Bostic can be an intimidating force in the middle. It sounds like he could flourish in his second season as a pro.

Bears | Open competition for returns jobs    Tue Jul 1, 10:20 PM

Chicago Bears WR Eric Weems, WR Micheal Spurlock, WR Armanti Edwards, WR Chris X. Williams and RB Michael Ford are all in the mix for the kick and punt return jobs this season.

Footballguys view: The days of Devin Hester are long gone, and the Bears need to find a dangerous return man to aid their special teams. It will be interesting to see which one of these players stands out the most in training camp.

Bears | Matthew Mulligan has good chance to make team    Mon Jun 30, 03:55 PM

Chicago Bears TE Matthew Mulligan appears to have a very good chance to make the final roster because of his ability to block in addition to being a decent receiving threat.

Footballguys view: Mulligan was originally an undrafted free agent for the Dolphins coming out of Maine in 2008. He's bounced around to several teams from then to now, but he might have a landing spot in Chicago this year. According to Pro Football Focus, Mulligan played 339 snaps for the Patriots in 2013. Mulligan could give the team valuable depth, but star tight end Martellus Bennett rarely comes off the field.

Bears | Jay Cutler cleans up fundamentals     Sun Jun 29, 10:33 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has made tremendous strides cleaning up his fundamentals this offseason, according to quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh. 'I've seen incredible progress,' Cavanaugh said. 'When we got in here last year & evaluated him we had a real good conversation with him about certain things that every quarterback should do. We said, 'Jay it might not be natural, but we want you to try it.' And he did"

Footballguys view: We've seen the Bears and head coach Marc Trestman stand up for Cutler with a new contract. It's good to see Cutler reciprocating their support with something he's needed to do since he came into the league. Cutler has a rocket arm, but his fundamentals have always been lacking. We'll see if that changes this year as Cutler could flourish in Trestman's system with quality weapons like Brandon Marshall, Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennet and Matt Forte.

Bears | Eben Britton could push for starting job    Sat Jun 28, 11:51 AM

Chicago Bears OT Eben Britton could push for the starting right tackle job during training camp if OT Jordan Mills (foot) is slowed in his recovery from a broken foot.

Footballguys view: Britton is an athletic player who can mirror rushers on the edge. He's been banged up quite a bit as a pro, but he can be a good starter for the Bears if he stays healthy.

Bears | Marquess Wilson expected to win No. 3 wide receiver job    Wed Jun 25, 05:42 PM

Chicago Bears WR Marquess Wilson is expected to win the No. 3 wide receiver job unless he falters significantly in training camp.

Footballguys view: We love what Wilson can do on the football field. He can fly downfield, and Wilson does a good job of tracking passes over his shoulder. He can win at the point of the catch because of a good vertical and "my ball" mentality.

Bears | Terrence Toliver a dark horse    Wed Jun 25, 09:50 AM

Chicago Bears WR Terrence Toliver is a dark horse to win a roster spot with the team. He has shown gradual improvement with the team and has good size.

Footballguys view: Toliver has great size and overall athleticism, but he was extremely inconsistent at LSU and had to work his way up from the depths of the practice squad and bouncing around the bottom of NFL rosters. He would be a good fit as a backup receiver in Chicago.

Bears | Want Marquess Wilson to be No. 3    Wed Jun 25, 09:44 AM

The Chicago Bears want WR Marquess Wilson to win the slot receiver role. The job is his to lose unless he falters drastically in training camp.

Footballguys view: Wilson has been working with Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery in the offseason. He has added muscle and appears to be focused on the task ahead of him. If Marshall or Jeffery go down, Wilson will have fantasy value this year, and he can add to Jay Cutler's value even if the top two receivers stay healthy.

Bears | More on Adrian Wilson contract    Tue Jun 24, 03:37 PM

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears SS Adrian Wilson (Bears) agreed to a one-year contract worth $955,000.

Footballguys view: The Bears were desperate for safety help, and that's why they added the veteran. Wilson is not the same player he used to be, but he's smart, can play close to the line of scrimmage, and he gives the team more veteran leadership.

Bears | Adrian Wilson will compete with Ryan Mundy    Mon Jun 23, 05:32 PM

Chicago Bears SS Adrian Wilson will compete with SS Ryan Mundy for playing time. Mundy has seen the majority of time at strong safety during the offseason workout program.

Footballguys view: Wilson may have lost a step, but we'd give him the advantage of Mundy here. The Bears were desperate for safety help this offseason. We could see Wilson starting alongside Shane Vereen in the defensive backfield.
