Chicago Bears rookie DT Ego Ferguson jumped offsides twice in the same repetition Wednesday, July 30, in one-on-one drills. He jumped at a hard count and then again after being allowed to reset, which may illustrate the adjustment he is going through in his first NFL training camp.

Bears | Danny McCray worked with starters    Fri Aug 1, 01:47 AM

Chicago Bears SS Danny McCray worked with the first-string defense Wednesday, July 30, ahead of rookie SS Brock Vereen. Bears head coach Marc Trestman warned not to read into the situation, saying he wanted to see how McCray, a special teams standout, would fit in with the starters. 'In terms of covering and in terms of the run game, his effort level has been very high,' Trestman said. 'He's a highly intelligent player. He has played consistently and continued to ascend over the last few days.'

Bears | Jay Cutler's arm strength standing out    Wed Jul 30, 06:57 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's arm strength is standing out in practice. "The ball is ON you," said defensive coordinator Mel Tucker.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Cutler has always had a rocket arm. His mechanics have suffered in previous years because Cutler's arm is so strong he can fit passes in that other quarterbacks can't. He seems to be all-in with Marc Trestman, so that should only help his mechanics and accuracy look better.

Bears | Terrence Toliver seeks second opinion    Wed Jul 30, 12:58 AM

Chicago Bears WR Terrence Toliver (foot) is headed for a second opinion on the foot injury which sidelined him last week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Toliver is a borderline talent who is just trying to make the final roster. He needs to be healthy if he wants to make the team. Toliver has a good size/speed combination but he's failed to make much of an impact in the pros.

Bears | Dale Moss signed    Tue Jul 29, 10:56 PM

The Chicago Bears signed free-agent WR Dale Moss (Panthers) to a one-year deal Tuesday, July 29. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Anyone who played for the Los Angeles KISS team in the Arena League is cool with us. Moss played one season of college football at South Dakota State after playing three years of college basketball. The Packers picked him up as an undrafted free agent in 2012, and he's bounced around the league since then. Moss is on his second stint with the Bears.

Bears | Jimmy Clausen has strong practice     Tue Jul 29, 12:17 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jimmy Clausen was accurate with his throws during practice Monday, July 28, and he led a touchdown drive during a two-minute drill. Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com believes Clausen is 'very much' in the mix for the backup QB job.

Footballguys view: Clausen may be emerging here as the primary backup behind Jay Cutler. The former Notre Dame star flamed out during his brief time starting for the Panthers, but it sounds like he's making the most of his second chance. Bears head coach Marc Trestman is a renowned QB guru, so Clausen's resurgence shouldn't be that much of a surprise.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery injury update    Mon Jul 28, 01:20 PM

Updating a previous report, Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery (foot) left practice early Monday, July 28, because of a sore foot.

Footballguys view: Nothing to be too worried about here as of this moment according to reports, but "sore foot" can turn into something more serious if we hear about an MRI or X-ray, or an extended absence for Jeffery.

Bears | Tim Jennings tries to practice    Sun Jul 27, 11:46 PM

Chicago Bears CB Tim Jennings (quadriceps) was on the field at the start of practice Sunday, July 27, but left early because his leg did not feel right, according to head coach Marc Trestman.

Footballguys view: If Jennings can't get right soon, first-round pick Kyle Fuller might be breathing down his neck. Jennings flourished in the Bears defense under Lovie Smith, but Fuller might be a better player soon, if he isn't already. IDP league players with cornerback as a required position should monitor Jennings' health and Fuller's development.

Bears | Jay Cutler takes extra reps Sunday    Sun Jul 27, 03:45 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler practiced with the first-team offense and the second-team wide receivers Sunday, July 27, in order to get extra reps.

Footballguys view: The Bears are all in with Cutler. In his second year of the Marc Trestman offense, Cutler should be able to thrive with weapons like Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. His current ADP is QB13 (9.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Bears | Jordan Palmer has first shot at No. 2 QB job    Wed Jul 23, 03:38 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer still has the first shot at winning the backup quarterback job, according to head coach Marc Trestman.

Footballguys view: Palmer is likely to win the backup job behind Jay Cutler this year. Last year's backup, Josh McCown, moved on in free agency and is now the starter for the Buccaneers. Palmer's main competition for the spot could be free agent addition Jimmy Clausen. The Bears picked up Clausen earlier this offseason as he was looking for a fresh start. Rookie David Fales (San Jose State) could stick on the roster as a third-string developmental quarterback.

Chicago Bears CB Tim Jennings said he needs to work on his pass-rush moves as he is expecting to blitz more this season from the nickel cornerback position.

Bears | Jimmy Clausen could be in line for No. 2 QB job    Sat Jul 19, 12:32 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jimmy Clausen appears poised to beat QB Jordan Palmer for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: It would be an incredible redemption story for Clausen if he makes the team. He washed out quickly in Carolina, but he's getting a fresh start in Chicago. Clausen is working under the guidance of renowned QB guru Marc Trestman. The Bears head coach should be able to get the best out of him. We'll see if Clausen looks like a new man in 2014, and we'll see how much of a fight Palmer puts up in the preseason.

Bears | Jay Cutler praised by head coach    Fri Jul 18, 02:59 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has impressed head coach Marc Trestman with how intelligent and selfless he's been to better the team. Trestman also said he's been impressed with Cutler's skillset and football smarts.

Footballguys view: Trestman and the Bears certainly believe in Cutler. They wouldn't have committed to a seven-year $126.7 million contract earlier this year. He's more comfortable in the second year of the Trestman offense, and that should lead to better production on the field.

Bears | Shea McClellin to be used as edge rusher    Thu Jul 17, 04:58 PM

Bears | Coach cautious about Brock Vereen    Wed Jul 16, 03:53 PM

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman is cautious about FS Brock Vereen landing a starting job heading into training camp. "The simple fact we've rotated him with the 1's is a clear indication we think he can compete, but we're not going to anoint him yet," Trestman said. "There's no reason to think he can't put himself in position to compete for one of those jobs, but it's way, way too early."

Bears | Dante Rosario leading candidate for No. 2 TE job    Tue Jul 15, 09:00 PM

Chicago Bears TE Dante Rosario is the leading candidate to be the team's No. 2 tight end this year, according to Larry Mayer of ChicagoBears.com. TE Matthew Mulligan, TE Zach Miller and TE Jeron Mastrud will battle for the remaining backup spots during training camp.

Footballguys view: So long as the Black Unicorn Martellus Bennett doesn't get hurt, the backup tight end in Chicago is not fantasy relevant. Even if Bennett gets banged up there are likely better options out there for waiver wire purposes.

Bears | Ego Ferguson expected to learn both tackle positions    Tue Jul 15, 12:33 PM

Chicago Bears DT Ego Ferguson is expected to learn both defensive tackle positions. There is a chance Ferguson could get as many repetitions as the first team during training-camp and the preseason games.

Footballguys view: Ferguson is a run-stuffer who can stand his ground against double teams. He understands leverage and does a good job hand fighting in the trenches. Ferguson lacks the burst to create much interior pressure, but he can occupy space to allow linebackers behind him to make plays.

Bears | Jay Cutler more experienced in Marc Trestman's offense    Fri Jul 11, 03:38 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler believes he's more familiar with second-year head coach Marc Trestman's offense. Cutler said he should be able to think less and play faster now that he's become more acquainted with concepts and formations.

Footballguys view: We believe in Trestman's offense, and the Bears certainly are committed to Cutler. We'll see if Cutler can stay healthy and flourish in 2014. His current ADP is QB13 (9.08) in 12-team PPR leagues. It's not out of the question to think that Cutler could finish the year as a top-10 fantasy quarterback.
