Bears | Jay Cutler considering retirement    Thu Feb 23, 08:49 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is still considering whether he wants to continue playing in 2017, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: That would change the landscape a bit. The Bears are definitely shopping him, and there has been some interest, but that could cool with this news. What team will want to take a chance on trading for a guy who might then retire? On the other hand, this could be a ploy to get cut so he can dictate his destination himself. Cutler is a decent quarterback with something left in the tank, but he's not really a game-changer either in the NFL or in fantasy.

Bears | Jay Cutler likely cleared in March    Wed Feb 22, 11:30 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) has been rehabbing and working out following shoulder surgery, and he's expected to receive medical clearance by March.

Footballguys view: The Bears have Cutler on the trade block, but it's unclear how many offers (if any) they get. Cutler is done with the Bears, and we think he could end up with a team like the Jets.

Bears | Chicago seeking Jay Cutler trade     Tue Feb 21, 06:25 PM

The Chicago Bears are actively seeking a trade for QB Jay Cutler, according to ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

Footballguys view: The Bears want to get something for Cutler, but they may just end up having to cut him. He's got a big arm, but Cutler has not developed much else to his game and still gets stuck in bad habits like throwing off his back foot. Cutler is a starter in the NFL, but he is not the type of quarterback to build around.

Bears | Brian Hoyer could stay as mentor    Tue Feb 14, 02:51 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer is a logical choice to be re-signed if the Bears draft a rookie quarterback, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeff Dickerson. Hoyer is open to mentoring younger players and also still has some fuel left in the tank after throwing over 1,400 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions in six games last year.

Footballguys view: If (when?) the Bears move on from Jay Cutler, keeping Hoyer around as a mentor would be a wise idea. The team is currently expected to select a quarterback with the 3rd-overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Mitch Trubisky (North Carolina) may be the player they target to lead their franchise into the future. Having Hoyer as a mentor would help as Trubisky is a talented but mechanically raw player who needs more development.

Bears | Logan Paulsen on his way out?    Tue Feb 14, 02:43 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent TE Logan Paulsen may not be re-signed, according to ESPN.com's Jeff Dickerson. Paulsen did play in all 16 games last season, but 'the Bears probably want more production from that spot, or fewer penalties,' in the words of Dickerson.

Bears | Ted Larsen may not return    Tue Feb 14, 02:37 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent OG Ted Larsen may need to play somewhere else in 2017 if he wants a starting gig, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeff Dickerson. OGs Kyle Long, Josh Sitton and Cody Whitehair, among others, may keep Larsen from cracking into the starting offensive line.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery will cost pretty penny    Tue Feb 14, 02:31 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent WR Alshon Jeffery could be given the franchise tag for a second straight year. That tag would cost the Bears $17.5 million. That being said, both sides prefer a long-term deal, according to ESPN.com's Jeff Dickerson.

Footballguys view: We're not sure that Jeffery is going to be with the Bears in 2017. They could use the franchise tag on him again -- but that wouldn't sit well with the veteran receiver. If he hits the open market, Jeffery will likely (and quickly) be out of the Bears price range.

Bears | Zach Miller eyeing OTAs    Wed Feb 8, 11:29 AM

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (foot) said he's ahead of schedule in his recovery from Lisfranc surgery, and he said he'll be ready for organized team activities in April.

Footballguys view: Miller has proven to be a quality starter when healthy, but staying healthy has been a problem for him during his entire pro career. The Bears should consider adding a tight end in this amazing draft class at the position.

Bears | Jordan Howard in rare company    Sun Feb 5, 08:20 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard set franchise rookie records with 1,313 rushing yards and seven 100-yard games, and he joined Walter Payton as the only Bears players to rush for more than 1,300 yards in a season while averaging at least five yards per carry.

Footballguys view: Howard was doing this with Matt Barkley at quarterback in the last third of the season. He should be one of the first 10-12 running backs off of the board in drafts this summer.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery took care of body    Sat Feb 4, 11:03 PM

Chicago Bears impending free-agent WR Alshon Jeffery did 'a good job taking care of his body' during the 2016 season, according to general manager Ryan Pace. 'I saw how he worked and how he prepared and kind of where his focus has been and his mindset,' Pace said.

Footballguys view: Jeffery still missed four games because of a suspension, which can't help his standing. Still, a talent of Jeffery's caliber rarely hits free agency, so some team will likely give him 25+ million dollars guaranteed despite his spotty durability track record.

Bears | Bears moving on from Jay Cutler?    Thu Feb 2, 08:05 PM

The Chicago Bears are 'moving on' from QB Jay Cutler, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: This is no surprise. They seemed open to moving on from him at the beginning of the John Fox era, but there were no takers. Adam Gase revived Cutler in 2015, but 2016 was an injury-riddled and mostly lost year for Cutler in Chicago. He might not be as coveted as Tony Romo or Jimmy Garoppolo in the free agent market, but he should start somewhere next season, even if it is as a bridge to a first-round rookie passer.

Bears | Chicago interested in Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Feb 2, 03:31 PM

The Chicago Bears will make a strong effort to acquire New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, according to sources. The Bears have done significant work on Garoppolo and are comfortable with him as a quarterback.

Footballguys view: GM Ryan Pace and Garoppolo both went to Eastern Illinois, so the team could have an edge in negotiations if Garoppolo's wishes are factored in. He would have the advantage of a strong running game behind Jordan Howard and a defense that is coming around with some strong additions in the front seven during John Fox's first two seasons as head coach.

Bears | Jordan Howard finds end zone at home    Wed Jan 25, 07:19 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard scored all six of his touchdowns at home this season.

Footballguys view: The Bears weren't a great team and didn't get into the red zone as much on the road--although let's be honest, the red zone trips at home weren't frequent either. We're hoping to see a more effective overall offense next year so Howard can reach his potential.

Bears | Brian Hoyer to become free agent    Sun Jan 15, 06:10 PM

Chicago Bears QB Brian Hoyer will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Hoyer was limited to six games this year with the Bears. A fractured forearm ended his season after he threw for 1,445 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions. Some team in need of an experienced QB should be interested in the 31-year old veteran...most likely as depth.

Bears | Alshon Jeffery to be UFA    Sat Jan 14, 12:27 PM

Chicago Bears WR Alshon Jeffery will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Jeffery has likely played his last snap with the Bears. He missed four games this year due to suspension, but Jeffery looked good when on the field despite QB changes/injuries in Chicago. Jeffery played 2016 under the franchise tag, and he'll be highly sought after on the open market.

Bears | Rueben Randle signs with Chicago    Tue Jan 10, 05:26 PM

Free-agent WR Rueben Randle (Eagles) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, Jan. 10.

Footballguys view: Randle was eligible to sign a futures contract with the Bears since he was out of football in 2016. They worked him out in November and must've felt like he was worth a shot. Randle had 938 receiving yards in 2014 and 797 receiving yards in 2015. There's a chance he could find a spot with the Bears, but he didn't do anything to impress a WR-needy Eagles team in 2016 training camp.

Bears | Kevin White not running yet    Sat Jan 7, 01:41 PM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (leg) said he has not started running at this point but expects to be ready for offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: White had the makings of a superstar receiver coming out of West Virginia in 2015. His pro career has been derailed by injuries to the same leg. He's had two surgeries on the same leg, and White has played in only four NFL regular season games because of it. Time will tell if White can get healthy -- stay healthy -- and play up to the enormous potential he once had.

Bears | Jay Cutler ahead of schedule    Thu Jan 5, 11:30 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is rehabbing hard and is ahead of schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery, according to general manager Ryan Pace.

Footballguys view: We're still leaning towards Cutler and the Bears parting ways, but if they want to trade him he needs to be healthy. It's tough to figure out what the Bears are as well as their direction, so this should be an interesting offseason for Foxy and company.

Bears | Jay Cutler's future up in the air    Wed Jan 4, 11:57 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler's future with the team 'hasn't been completely finalized,' according to general manager Ryan Pace, but Pace said Wednesday, Jan. 3, 'everything is on the table' when it comes to the quarterback position.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked if Cutler sticks around in Chicago. With John Fox (and plenty of his assistants) sticking around it means Cutler has to go. Where he winds up -- and who the Bears replace him with -- is up in the air.

Bears | Danny Trevathan may start camp on PUP list    Wed Jan 4, 07:51 PM

Chicago Bears WR Dres Anderson, CB De'Vante Bausby, RB David Cobb, C Cornelius Edison, CB Jacoby Glenn, OT William Poehls, CB Rashaad Reynolds and OG Cyril Richardson were signed to Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Footballguys view: David Cobb is a natural runner, but he's bounced around the league in a short amount of time. He runs with some power, but Cobb lacks the juice in his legs to crank out yards on the ground consistently at the pro level.

Bears | Jay Cutler has surgery    Tue Jan 3, 08:30 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler (shoulder) is recovering from shoulder surgery, which is why he wasn't available for the media at the end of the season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Cutler is likely done in Chicago. It will be interesting to see where he ends up in 2017, but there should be a few teams interested in the veteran quarterback.

Bears | Kevin White should be ready for offseason    Mon Jan 2, 12:43 PM

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (leg) is expected to be ready for the offseason program as he completes his recovery from a spiral fracture of his fibula, according to the Chicago Sun-Times' Adam L. Jahns.

Footballguys view: A top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft, White has only played in four games over two years in the NFL. In four appearances this year, White was targeted 36 times and hauled in 19 catches for 187 yards. If healthy, he'll compete with Cameron Meredith to be the Bears no.1 WR in 2017.
