Bears | Martellus Bennett skipped program     Sat Apr 25, 03:32 PM

Chicago Bears TE Martellus Bennett did not participate in the voluntary offseason program, according to sources.

Footballguys view: There's nothing voluntary about "voluntary" workouts in the NFL. The Bears are installing a new offense under head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Bennett should be there as much as possible. It's a non-issue right now, but keep an eye out to see when Bennett does report.

Bears | Bear Pascoe signed    Thu Apr 23, 12:51 PM

Free-agent TE Bear Pascoe (Falcons) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Thursday, April 23. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Pascoe, a former high school rodeo champion, is country strong and a nasty blocker. He's not going to do much as a receiver, but he can help blast open holes for the Bears' rushing attack as a part-time player.

Bears | Kevin White visiting Bears Tuesday    Tue Apr 21, 02:30 PM

Updating a previous report, West Virginia WR Kevin White is visiting the Chicago Bears Tuesday, April 21.

Footballguys view: The Bears are looking for wide receiver help with Brandon Marshall getting bounced to the Jets. White has incredible burst off the line of scrimmage, and he can take the top off the defense. The Bears have the 7th-overall pick, and White could be there if the Raiders don't select him at four.

Bears | Tyler Wilson attending Bears camp    Tue Apr 21, 09:41 AM

Free-agent QB Tyler Wilson (Bengals) will attend the Chicago Bears' minicamp next week on a try-out basis.

Footballguys view: Wilson was reportedly impressive during the veteran combine earlier this year. He was a gunslinger at Arkansas but staying durable and passing accurately were always question marks. We'll see if he can impress the Bears enough to earn a spot as OTAs continue.

Bears | Two prospects visit    Sat Apr 18, 02:14 AM

Portland State OL Cornelius Edison and Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson visited the Chicago Bears this week.

Footballguys view: Grayson is the player to highlight here. He does a good job of manipulating the defense with his eyes, and Grayson is a sound prospect in terms of athleticism and accuracy. He should be a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Bears | Trae Waynes visits    Fri Apr 17, 03:06 AM

Michigan State CB Trae Waynes visited the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Waynes is one of the best cornerbacks in this draft class, and he's a lock to be a first-round pick. He's got good length, fluid hips and the speed to stay with any receiver downfield. Waynes also plays with great confidence and has a physical edge to his game.

Bears | Matt Forte downplays vacancy    Tue Apr 14, 05:29 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte didn't make a big deal out of his absence during the team's voluntary offseason program.

Footballguys view: Voluntary doesn't actually mean voluntary in the NFL. Forte stressed the voluntary aspect of the workouts and said he'll be present when it counts. With a new coaching staff in place, Forte should be there to learn from head coach John Fox.

Bears | Chicago will host Jameis Winston    Tue Apr 14, 02:49 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston will visit the Chicago Bears Wednesday, April 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bears are not sold on Jay Cutler. There's a chance they could move him on draft day, and they'd need to be in a position to add Winston or Marcus Mariota if that happened.

Link to story

Bears | Mario Edwards visits Chicago    Tue Apr 14, 09:07 AM

Florida State DE Mario Edwards visited with the Chicago Bears last week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Edwards does a good job of using his hands to jar blockers after the snap. He's functionally strong, but he did have a problem with weight fluctuation during his time with the Seminoles. Edwards will need to improve his consistency when getting off the snap if he wants to improve his play in the pros.

Bears | Matt Forte not at workouts    Mon Apr 13, 07:54 PM

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte was not present for the start of the offseason workouts Monday, April 13, according to sources.

Footballguys view: An interesting development in Chicago here. Forte is entering the final year of his contract and is looking for a new contract.

Bears | Breshad Perriman visits Chicago    Mon Apr 13, 05:33 PM

Central Florida WR Breshad Perriman visited the Chicago Bears Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: Perriman is a fast wide receiver who can get on top of the defense in a hurry. He has a large catch radius, and he can make difficult catches seem routine. Drops and inconsistent routes are a concern for some, but his physical attributes are too much to pass up.

Bears | Marcus Mariota visits Bears    Fri Apr 10, 09:43 AM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota visited the Chicago Bears at the end of March.

Footballguys view: Mariota falling to seven (or beyond) is certainly within the range of outcomes, and the Bears are far from sold on Jay Cutler so this is some important time that these two have spent together. The #7 pick is valuable and would marry John Fox and GM Ryan Pace to Mariota, so it will be a high bar for Mariota to pass to be in consideration even though he is thought by some to surely be long gone by #7.

Bears | CHI will meet with Kevin White    Thu Apr 9, 03:00 PM

West Virginia WR Kevin White said he is scheduled to meet with the Chicago Bears before the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Now that there is a big 'Brandon Marshall' sized hole in the offense, the Bears need a guy who can step in and play across from Alshon Jeffery. White would be an excellent addition and be able to feast while Jeffery gets the attention. He's got the speed and downfield playmaking ability to be a big-play threat for the Bears. White or Amari Cooper should be there when the Bears pick at 7th overall in the first round of the draft.

Bears | Matt Slauson expects to be cleared    Tue Apr 7, 05:00 PM

Chicago Bears OG Matt Slauson (pectoral) expects to be medically cleared to take part in the Bears' offseason program which starts Monday, April 13.

Footballguys view: The Bears have re-worked their offensive line this offseason, and getting Slauson back will help. Slauson was on the Reserve/Injured list with a torn pectoral he suffered last season.

Bears | Stefen Wisniewski visited    Mon Apr 6, 02:34 PM

Free-agent C Stefen Wisniewski (Raiders) has visited with the Chicago Bears this offseason.

Footballguys view: That might not be a team of interest for Wisniewski since the Bears signed Will Montgomery in free agency last week. Offseason shoulder surgery is the reason that Wisniewski has gone unsigned so far. When healthy, he's a talented young center with good lateral agility after the snap. A few teams have shown interest, but no signing is imminent at this time.

Bears | Vic Beasley to visit    Sun Apr 5, 02:20 AM

Clemson OLB Vic Beasley will visit the Chicago Bears in the coming days.

Footballguys view: Beasley is one of the most explosive pass-rushers in the 2015 NFL draft. He can bend around the edge and get to the quarterback with ease. Beasley needs to add weight to his frame if he wants to play up to his potential as a pro.

Bears | Anthony Walters cut    Thu Apr 2, 03:16 PM

Chicago Bears FS Anthony Walters was released Thursday, April 2.

Footballguys view: Walters was really no more than depth, and may catch on with another team for the same reason, but there is no expectation that when/if he does, he will have much of an impact.

Bears | Sherrick McManis re-signs    Thu Apr 2, 12:45 PM

Free-agent CB Sherrick McManis re-signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: Sherrick McManis is a backup in the secondary with a lot more value as a special teams player. He'll have to show he can still produce as a kicking-team special teams player if he wants to stick on the roster.

Sherrick McManis player page

Bears | Brian De La Puente unlikely to return    Thu Apr 2, 12:20 PM

Free-agent C Brian De La Puente (Bears) is unlikely to return to the Chicago Bears after they signed C Will Montgomery.

Footballguys view: De La Puente spent part of last season on injured reserve after filling in at both guard and center. He was solid when he played in New Orleans, but Chicago seemed to be an ill fit for him. He may land somewhere else if he can prove he is healthy and willing to work up from lower on the depth again.

Bears | Will Montgomery signing with Bears    Thu Apr 2, 10:22 AM

Free-agent C Will Montgomery (Broncos) will sign with the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Montgomery has experience playing for John Fox, both with the Broncos and the Panthers. He's got plenty of experience in the NFL, and Montgomery can start at center or guard if necessary.

Bears | Sam Acho added    Wed Apr 1, 02:16 PM

Free-agent LB Sam Acho (Cardinals) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, April 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Bears continue their defensive overhaul here. We'll see how Acho fits in the team's 3-4 defense. With only two sacks over the last two years combined, it's difficult to project him doing much as a pass-rusher. Acho has turned into a better run-defender in recent years.

Bears | Jacquizz Rodgers signs with Bears    Tue Mar 31, 05:54 PM

Free-agent RB Jacquizz Rodgers (Falcons) signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 31.

Footballguys view: Rodgers can give the Bears a good change-of-pace back behind Matt Forte. His signing does cut into the fantasy value of Kadeem Carey, last year's backup in Chicago. Rodgers is only a receiving back, but he can get a few yards here and there as a runner on draw plays.

Bears | Jacquizz Rodgers visits Windy City    Tue Mar 31, 11:58 AM

Free-agent RB Jacquizz Rodgers (Falcons) is visiting the Chicago Bears, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Rodgers is the diminutive runner from Oregon State who flashed just a little bit during his time with the Falcons. New Bears head coach John Fox is known for using more than one running back, and the team may be searching for change-of-pace options behind Matt Forte.

Bears | Alan Ball joins team    Fri Mar 27, 02:53 PM

Free-agent CB Alan Ball (Jaguars) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Friday, March 27. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ball, a seventh-round draft pick by the Cowboys in 2007, has started 22 of his 43 career starts over the last two years. He can excel in press-man coverage, and Ball will compete for playing time in the Bears new revamped defense.

Bears | Jay Cutler to face open competition    Thu Mar 26, 06:20 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will head into the offseason as the team's No. 1 quarterback on the depth chart, but head coach John Fox said there will be an 'open competition' at the quarterback spot between Cutler and QB Jimmy Clausen during training camp and offseason workouts. The current coaching staff and general manager Ryan Pace have nothing vested in Cutler, and they've made it clear that money isn't the sole driver of their decisions.

Footballguys view: This is it for Cutler. If Fox and OC Adam Gase can't get him to play better, then the Bears are likely to move on next year. We're not expecting Cutler to turn it around, but it will be interesting to see how he responds to new coaching.

Bears | Shea McClellin to work inside    Thu Mar 26, 12:39 AM

Bears | Jay Cutler lacking confidence?    Wed Mar 25, 05:01 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler seemed to lack confidence last season, according to head coach John Fox. 'I think maybe he got to the point where he lacked confidence a year ago. To build that back up, it's going to take time, daily. It takes trust, like any relationship.'

Footballguys view: Cutler lacks confidence, focus, leadership...and he'll fall back on bad habits at the drop of a hat. The Bears are giving him one more year to clean his act up, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see the two sides part ways after 2015 if things don't change.

Bears | Mason Foster agrees to deal    Tue Mar 24, 06:06 PM

Free-agent LB Mason Foster (Buccaneers) has agreed to terms with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24, according to Foster's agent.

Footballguys view: This took long enough! Foster to the Bears was predicted weeks ago, but the two sides had to work out contract details. He separated his shoulder early in 2014 with the Bucs, only to return and strain his Achilles' later on. According to reports, Foster is fully healthy now.

Bears | Ray McDonald signing    Tue Mar 24, 01:53 PM

Free-agent DE Ray McDonald (49ers) is signing an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24.

Footballguys view: McDonald comes to Chicago with his fair share of baggage. On the field, he should start at defensive end for the Bears and he can slide inside to tackle when the team goes with a four-man front. Off the field, McDonald has to prove that he can make better decisions and avoid the trouble that circled him last year.

Bears | Jarvis Jenkins signs with Chicago    Tue Mar 24, 10:38 AM

Free-agent DE Jarvis Jenkins (Redskins) agreed with the Chicago Bears Tuesday, March 24, on a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: Jenkins never developed into the pass-rusher Washington thought he would be when they selected him in the second round of the 2011 NFL draft out of Clemson. In Chicago's 3-4 defense, Jenkins will be primarily an edge-setting run defender.

Bears | Dante Rosario re-signed    Thu Mar 19, 06:15 PM

The Chicago Bears re-signed TE Dante Rosario to a one-year deal Thursday, March 19. The financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Nothing to see here people. Rosario will continue to work as a reserve tight end behind Martellus Bennett. For the third time in his career (Bears, Broncos) Rosario will be reunited with John Fox.

Bears | Thomas Gafford signs    Wed Mar 18, 07:17 PM

Free-agent LS Thomas Gafford (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed deal with the Chicago Bears Wednesday, March 18.

Free-agent OG Dan Connolly (Patriots) is receiving interest from the Chicago Bears at the center position.

Bears | May look at Mason Foster    Tue Mar 17, 07:51 AM

Free-agent LB Mason Foster (Buccaneers) has drawn interest from the Chicago Bears, but the teams have not discussed a multi-year contract or any sort of deal.

Footballguys view: We're surprised a deal hasn't gotten done here yet. The Bears are looking to re-work their defense, and Foster would give them a veteran presence at linebacker.

Bears | Vladimir Ducasse signs    Mon Mar 16, 07:02 PM

Free-agent OG Vladimir Ducasse (Jets) signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Bears Monday, March 16. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ducasse was once a highly-touted second-round pick of the Jets in 2010. He can line up at either guard position, and he has experience playing right tackle as well. Too bad he's not very good. The Bears will see if he can win a reserve role with the team in 2015.

Bears | Antrel Rolle joins the Bears    Wed Mar 11, 11:12 PM

The Chicago Bears and free-agent FS Antrel Rolle (Giants) agreed to terms on a three-year, $11.25 million contract Wednesday, March 11, his agent confirmed. His contract calls for $5 million to be guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Rolle isn't quite the player he used to be, but he'll make some big plays here and there. The Bears get a veteran leader for the defense, but make no mistake about it...his skills are on the decline.

Bears | Eddie Royal headed to Chicago    Wed Mar 11, 11:11 PM

Free-agent WR Eddie Royal (Chargers) is going to sign with the Chicago Bears, a source said Wednesday, March 11.

Footballguys view: A good move for the Bears here. He has familiarity with QB Jay Cutler from their time in Denver, and he also is familiar with members of the coaching staff. Adam Gase, new Bears OC, was Royal's wide receivers coach when he was in Denver.

Bears | Jay Cutler to remain starter in Chicago    Wed Mar 11, 03:21 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler will remain the starting quarterback in 2015, according to general manager Ryan Pace.

Footballguys view: Cutler has a hand-picked QB coach in Dowell Loggains, and the team is reportedly taking away some of the freedom for Cutler to change plays at the line and otherwise taking things off of his plate. Under John Fox this should be much more balanced offense than it was under Marc Trestman.

Bears | Eddie Royal to visit Chitown    Tue Mar 10, 11:15 PM

Free-agent WR Eddie Royal (Chargers) traveled to Illinois Tuesday, March 10, to meet with the Chicago Bears and potentially sign a contract, a league source confirmed.

Footballguys view: New Bears offensive coordinator was Royal's wide receivers coach when he was with the Broncos. He also played one season with QB Jay Cutler with the Denver Broncos, and Royal posted 91 receptions for 980 yards and five touchdowns that season.

Bears | Chicago tailoring playbook to Jay Cutler     Tue Mar 10, 02:43 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler, who is fully expected to be a part of the team's plans in 2015, will have the playbook tailored to his strengths by head coach John Fox and offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Cutler will earn $15.5 million this year on a contract that is fully guaranteed, but the new coaching regime may not hesitate to go in another direction if Cutler struggles early in the year. It's likely that the coaching staff sat down with Cutler and discussed his expectations for this season and how to reduce turnovers and bad decisions in a new scheme.

Bears | Ron Parker on the radar    Tue Mar 10, 12:19 PM

Impending free-agent CB Ron Parker (Chiefs) is on the radar of the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Parker proved last year that he could play safety as well as corner. In fact, he's a better safety than he is a cornerback, and that position versatility has increased the interest in him on the open market.

Bears | Jay Cutler staying in Chicago    Tue Mar 10, 08:51 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler is fully expected to be the starting quarterback in 2015, according to sources with knowledge of the team's thinking. One source was adamant that there was 'absolutely zero truth' to recent reports that Cutler was being actively shopped for a potential trade.

Footballguys view: Cutler may be staying in Chicago, but 2015 is certainly a "make or break" year for him. If he doesn't stay in line, stay healthy and win then the Bears could be looking to move on next season.

Bears | To make push for Terrance Knighton?    Mon Mar 9, 01:34 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent DT Terrance Knighton is expected to be pursued heavily by the Chicago Bears. ESPN's Josina Anderson reported that the Bears have 'serious interest' in Knighton to be the anchor of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's 3-4 front.

Footballguys view: Knighton played the last two years for new Bears head coach John Fox in Denver. Knighton is regarded as one of the better run stoppers in the league.

Bears | Pernell McPhee agrees with Chicago    Mon Mar 9, 09:41 AM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent OLB Pernell McPhee agreed to a five-year deal worth nearly $40 million with the Chicago Bears Monday, March 9. The deal includes nearly $16 million guaranteed, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Bears get a strong pass-rusher here in McPhee. He can line up virtually anywhere in the front seven of the defense. Last year as a reserve player, McPhee posted 7.5 sacks, 64 quarterback pressures and 24 quarterback hits.

Bears | Chicago looking for WRs    Fri Mar 6, 05:33 PM

The Chicago Bears are unlikely to use the seventh overall pick of the NFL Draft on a wide receiver, but the upcoming class of receivers gives them many options to complement WR Alshon Jeffery. They could look to University of Miami WR Phillip Dorsett, who ran a 4.33-second 40-yard dash in the second round. The Bears also hosted free-agent WR Brian Hartline (Dolphins) for a visit this week. After trading WR Brandon Marshall, the current roster features WRs Josh Bellamy, Marc Mariani, Josh Morgan and Marquess Wilson. Jeffery may be moved to the No. 1 receiver role, but he averaged just four catches in the last three games with Marshall injured in 2014.

Footballguys view: Jeffery is the WR1 now, but the Bears still might add a big-name wide receiver through the draft or free agency.

Bears | Re-sign Jimmy Clausen     Fri Mar 6, 11:35 AM

Chicago Bears QB Jimmy Clausen re-signed with the team, per a league source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Clausen is reunited with John Fox. In 2010, Fox was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers when they selected Clausen in the second round of the draft. Clausen struggled as a starter, and he became a backup behind Cam Newton in 2011. He bounced to the Bears in 2014, and Clausen looked decent playing in Week 16 last year against the Lions. Clausen will backup Cutler again this year...if Cutler is not moved via trade.
