Bears | Jarrell Freeman set free    Tue Feb 20, 12:11 PM

Chicago Bears LB Jerrell Freeman was released Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Footballguys view: Freeman has two games left on a PED ban that he'll need to serve in 2018. Coming off a torn pectoral muscle, Freeman should still have some teams interested in his services this offseason.

Bears | Dion Sims to be cut?    Fri Feb 9, 09:23 PM

Chicago Bears TE Dion Sims is 'likely' to be released before $4 million of his contract becomes guaranteed on March 16, according to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

Footballguys view: In his first season with the Bears, Sims only caught 15 passes for 180 yards and one touchdown. The Bears are set with second-year tight end Adam Shaheen as the lead player at the position. Sims is a big-bodied blocker who won't be much of a receiving asset for any team that picks him up.

Bears | Zach Miller hopes to play football again    Wed Feb 7, 11:57 PM

Chicago Bears TE Zach Miller (knee) said that he still hopes to play football again. He's had nine surgeries related to the knee injury he suffered on Sunday, Oct. 29, against the New Orleans Saints, and while he's 'out of the woods' concerning the previous possibility of losing his leg, he's still waiting on his knee to heal enough to start rehabilitation. There is still no timeline for when that will happen.

Bears | Donovan Raiola added to coaching staff    Fri Feb 2, 02:50 PM

The Chicago Bears have hired former NFL offensive lineman Donovan Raiola as their new assistant offensive line coach.

Footballguys view: Raiola had a nondescript NFL career that lasted five years. His brother, Dominic, played for the Lions for 14 years and was the first Lion ever to start 200 games.

Bears | Mike Glennon as good as gone?    Fri Feb 2, 01:20 AM

Chicago Bears QB Mike Glennon is expected to play elsewhere in 2018 according to ESPN's Jeff Dickerson, who put the odds of Glennon returning at 'virtually nil.'

Footballguys view: The Bears probably knew this outcome was likely as soon as they zeroed in on Mitchell Trubisky in last year's draft. The Buccaneers could bring Glennon back to be their #2 behind Jameis Winston. The team reportedly offered him a contract that would have made him the highest paid backup in the league last year. Like Denver with Brock Osweiler they can get their man a lot cheaper now because they came in second when he was on the open market.

Bears | Jordan Howard excited for new offense    Thu Feb 1, 01:01 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard is excited about the Bears' new coaching staff and believes the offense will be more creative under new head coach Matt Nagy.

Footballguys view: It can't get less, though the limitations came in part due to a lack of talent at receiver. Still, Nagy will mix things up, hopefully unleash Mitch Trubisky and that would in turn pull the defense out of the box to clear lanes for Howard.

Bears | Josh Sitton has option for 2018    Sun Jan 28, 02:01 PM

Chicago Bears OG Josh Sitton has a 2018 option in his contract, and the Bears will have a month to decide whether they will exercise the option. Sitton would receive $8 million in 2018 if his option is picked up.

Footballguys view: Sitton has only played in 13 games in each of the last two years after the Packers somewhat surprisingly released him in 2015. He is not a sure thing to be a Bear next season.

Bears | More surgery for Kyle Long    Fri Jan 26, 08:37 AM

Chicago Bears OG Kyle Long (shoulder) will have more surgery this offseason to address the torn labrum in his left shoulder.

Footballguys view: Long is the best offensive lineman on the Bears roster. Hopefully this offseason will keep him from missing games this year after missing 14 over the last two season.

Bears | Calvin Ridley makes sense for Bears    Thu Jan 18, 12:22 PM

Alabama WR Calvin Ridley was given to the Chicago Bears in the first 2018 mock draft by ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper. Ridley is widely considered the top wide receiver available in the 2018 draft class.

Footballguys view: The Bears are desperate for receiving help. Kevin White is never healthy and Alshon Jeffery is long gone. It's too early to take mocks seriously - well, it's always too early for that - but this makes a lot of sense.

Bears | Chicago bringing in Shane Toub    Wed Jan 17, 03:44 PM

Former University of Illinois graduate assistant Shane Toub is being hired as an offensive quality control coach for the Chicago Bears. Toub is the son of former Kansas City Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub.

Footballguys view: Toub was under Lovie Smith last year after his college playing career wound up in 2016.

Bears | Kevin M. Gilbride headed to Chicago    Sat Jan 13, 12:25 PM

The Chicago Bears hired former New York Giants tight end coach Kevin M. Gilbride to assume the same post Saturday, Jan. 13.

Footballguys view: The son of former Chargers head coach Kevin Gilbridge Sr. the Giants had Gilbride Jr. on staff for the last four years as the tight end coach. He'll now take a job on Matt Nagy's new staff, and we're excited to see what he can get out of Adam Shaheen with the Bears.

Bears | Mike Furrey hired    Sat Jan 13, 09:55 AM

The Chicago Bears hired former NFL WR Mike Furrey to be their new wide receivers coach Friday, Jan. 12.

Footballguys view: Furrey played both wide receiver and safety during his NFL career with teams like the Rams, Lions and Browns. He was most recently the head coach at Limestone College for the last two seasons. Furrey is part of Matt Nagy's new staff, and Furrey will be working to get better production from the position for young QB Mitchell Trubisky.

Bears | Vic Fangio staying with Bears    Fri Jan 12, 02:38 PM

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio will remain with the Bears after agreeing to a new three-year deal with the team, according to a source.

Footballguys view: When Matt Nagy was hired as the new head coach, many though Fangio (who interviewed for the job) would move on to opportunities with teams like the Chargers or the Packers. Staying with the Bears is a huge boost for the Bears defense who has been getting stronger under the guidance of Fangio for three seasons.

Bears | Chicago hires Chris Tabor    Fri Jan 12, 02:34 PM

The Chicago Bears have hired Cleveland Browns special teams coordinator Chris Tabor as their new special teams coordinator.

Footballguys view: Tabor has been through a tumultuous seven seasons with the Browns, going through five general managers and four head coaches. He has previous working experience with Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub. New Bears head coach Matt Nagy was hired from the Chiefs staff and wants to implement that Toub system that Tabor knows so well. That's good news for Tarik Cohen and the Bears special teams unit.

Bears | Mark Helfrich hired by Bears    Thu Jan 11, 09:39 AM

Updating an earlier report, former Oregon head coach Mark Helfrich was hired by the Chicago Bears as offensive coordinator Thursday, Jan. 11, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Helfrich was offensive coordinator under Chip Kelly at Oregon before he became head coach of the Ducks in 2013. He went 37-16 over four seasons, leading Oregon to the first College Football Playoff championship game after the 2014 season. During his time there, Oregon averaged 42.6 points per game and 536.7 yards per game, ranking second and third among FBS schools, respectively. While the leap to the pros from college is as hard for coaches as players, we feel optimistic for his role in Chicago.

Bears | Chicago hopes to retain Vic Fangio    Mon Jan 8, 12:43 PM

The Chicago Bears would like defensive coordinator Vic Fangio to return next season but there has no been a final decision on the situation.

Footballguys view: The Bears have hired Matt Nagy, former Chiefs offensive coordinator, to be their new head coach. Nagy is an offensive-minded coach, so retaining Fangio would make a lot of sense.

Link to story

Bears | Matt Nagy officially hired    Mon Jan 8, 12:17 PM

Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy has officially been hired as the Chicago Bears new head coach.

Footballguys view: Nagy did great work with the Chiefs offense this year, especially when he was given play-calling duties later in the season. He is the perfect offensive minded coach to help get the most out of young QB Mitchell Trubisky. The Bears are hoping he can be to Trubisky what former Chiefs OC Doug Pederson is to Carson Went with the Eagles. We'll see if Bears DC Vic Fangio sticks around on Nagy's staff.

Bears | Vic Fangio could remain with Chicago    Sun Jan 7, 11:42 AM

Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio could remain with the team if Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo is hired as the head coach because DeFilippo told the Bears that he would be willing to retain Fangio if he becomes head coach.

Bears | Chicago to talk with Matt Nagy Sunday    Sat Jan 6, 02:04 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy is scheduled to interview for the Chicago Bears head coaching position Sunday, Jan. 7, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Nagy has done great things for the Chiefs offense, and he's got the makings of a fine head coach. The Bears need to find someone like Nagy who could get the most out of QB Mitchell Trubisky.

Bears | Pat Shurmur interviewing in Chicago    Fri Jan 5, 11:12 AM

Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is interviewing with the Chicago Bears for the head coaching vacancy Friday, Jan. 5.

Footballguys view: Shurmur has done a fantastic job with the Vikings offense, even while losing talented starters like QB Sam Bradford or RB Dalvin Cook. The Bears need to find a coach who can bring the best out of young QB Mitchell Trubisky, and they may peg Shurmur as that guy.

Bears | George Edwards sought for Bears interview    Wed Jan 3, 09:04 AM

Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards has been requested for an interview by the Chicago Bears for their head coaching vacancy, according to a source.

Bears | Bears seek out two interviews    Mon Jan 1, 10:14 PM

The Chicago Bears have requested permission to interview New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and Minnesota Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur for their head coaching vacancy.

Footballguys view: McDaniels had a head coaching job with the Broncos in 2009 and 2010, but he didn't even make it the full two seasons. He found his way back to the Patriots to run the offense, and everyone knows the bountiful success that has occurred during his time as OC. Shurmur has taken a Vikings offense (without QB Sam Bradford and RB Dalvin Cook) and built a unit that could make a deep postseason run. The Bears are in need of a coach who can get the best out of QB Mitchell Trubisky.

Bears | Ryan Pace given extension    Mon Jan 1, 05:12 PM

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Pace signed a two-year contract extension through 2021 Monday, Jan. 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Pace and John Fox were in a power struggle with the Bears. Fox lost and Pace won. Now, the Bears GM will begin the search for a new head coach. Pace has done a good job of drafting players for the Bears, but his work in free agency leaves a lot to be desired (Mike Glennon, really?). The Bears need to turn things around in the NFC North or Pace may run out of time to fix things before the team goes in yet another direction.

Bears | Cameron Meredith hopeful for training camp    Mon Jan 1, 02:22 PM

Chicago Bears WR Cameron Meredith (knee) isn't sure he'll be able to participate during the offseason program this spring, but he expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Meredith suffered this injury in the team's third preseason game of 2017. Almost a full year removed from this injury, Meredith should be near full strength by the start of training camp barring any setbacks in his recovery.

Bears | John Fox fired    Mon Jan 1, 09:03 AM

Chicago Bears head coach John Fox was fired Monday, Jan. 1, according to sources.

Footballguys view: No surprise here as this move has been expected for most of the year. Fox has coached the Bears for three seasons and finishes his time as head coach with a 14-34 record. For his career, Fox has a 141-130 record with a .520 win percentage. He's average as a head coach, but the Bears are the first team he's coached (Panthers, Broncos) that has failed to make a deep postseason run. Fox can be pegged by a team in need of a veteran coach.

Bears | Week 17 game recap for Bears    Sun Dec 31, 04:40 PM

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky completed 20-of-36 pass attempts for 178 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions in Week 17 against the Minnesota Vikings. RB Tarik Cohen rushed for 13 yards on three yards, which actually led the team, while RB Jordan Howard ran nine times for nine yards. WR Dontrelle Inman led the team with 94 yards on five receptions, while WR Josh Bellamy chipped in with a 30-yard grab on his only catch. WR Kendall Wright wrapped up the season with five snags for 29 yards, while Cohen finished with a team-high six receptions but just 14 yards.

Footballguys view: Trubisky's rookie year is far from encouraging, but the team's offense was not always imaginative and he could benefit if the Bears move in a more offense-oriented direction with their head coaching hire. Jordan Howard was strong when the anachronistic Bears offense found a game script to match, but that was the exception, not the rule this year.

Bears | John Fox expected to be fired    Sun Dec 31, 09:54 AM

Chicago Bears head coach John Fox is expected to be relieved of his duties following Week 17's game against the Minnesota Vikings, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: The Bears have seemed stuck in a past era while Fox has been the coach, but they have a talented young quarterback, and Fox has instilled competitiveness in the team. Hopefully Mitchell Trubisky will get a creative offensive mind to mold an offense around him.

Bears | Two touchdowns for Jordan Howard    Sun Dec 24, 04:39 PM

Chicago Bears RB Jordan Howard rushed for 44 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16.

Footballguys view: Howard wasn't very effective except when the end zone was in sight, which is good enough for his owners. The Bears commitment to run kept Howard in the range of fantasy relevance and kept his weekly ceiling high through ups and downs this year. He could struggle next week against the Vikings, as long as they have something to play for.

Bears | Mitchell Trubisky throws for 199 yards    Sun Dec 24, 04:33 PM

Chicago Bears QB Mitchell Trubisky went 14-for-23 for 193 yards against the Cleveland Browns in Week 16. He also rushed for 44 yards and one touchdown on seven carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Trubisky has been up and down this year, but considering the ultra-conservative nature of his offense and what little he has to work with at wide receiver, it was a promising rookie year. Hopefully the Bears fire John Fox and hire an offensive-minded head coach to build an offense around Trubisky.
