Eagles | Philly high on Sam Bradford    Wed Mar 25, 04:46 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford was valued high by head coach Chip Kelly and owner Jeffrey Lurie before they traded for him this offseason. Lurie said this week that the Eagles evaluated Bradford as 'the best young quarterback we'd seen... probably since Peyton Manning coming out of college' leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft. Offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who worked with Bradford while with the St. Louis Rams, was maybe the strongest advocate of Bradford before the trade went down.

Footballguys view: Bradford ran a spread offense in college at Oklahoma, and he's a better fit for Chip Kelly's system than Nick Foles was. If healthy (big if), Bradford has the intermediate accuracy to work well in this style of offense.

Eagles | Chip Kelly favors one-cut runners    Wed Mar 25, 09:58 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles traded RB LeSean McCoy to the Buffalo Bills because head coach Chip Kelly desires a one-cut running back, according to Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie. Lurie praised McCoy as a player, but the move was not financially driven. Kelly felt he could garner more production from a different running back or two. Lurie used the term 'power spread' on multiple occasions to describe Kelly's offense.

Footballguys view: The Eagles now have an incredible group of running backs to work with. DeMarco Murray, Darren Sproles and Ryan Mathews figure to share the workload.

Eagles | Evan Mathis might be dealt    Mon Mar 23, 11:55 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles might release OG Evan Mathis if they cannot find a trade partner, according to a source close to the situation.

Footballguys view: Mathis was on the trade block last year as well. He carries cap numbers of $6.5 and $7 million over the next two years. Only $2 million of Mathis' remaining contract is guaranteed from his signing bonus, so the Eagles would save $11.5 million over the next two seasons if they cut him.

Eagles | Connor Barwin restructured    Wed Mar 18, 07:21 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Connor Barwin reworked his 2015 deal Wednesday, March 18. His 2015 salary ($6.4 million) is now guaranteed, and he'll make $3 million in 2016.

Eagles | Bryan Braman restructures    Wed Mar 18, 02:35 AM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Bryan Braman has restructured his contract. Braman reduced his base salary from $1.2 million to $745,000. In exchange, the team extended his contract for an additional year and will pay him $900,000 in 2016.

Eagles | Benardrick McKinney to visit    Tue Mar 17, 07:45 AM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney will visit the Philadelphia Eagles in advance of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: McKinney is an aggressive player who can sniff out the run. He is a sound tackler and does a good job of forcefully bringing down an opponent. McKinney has the speed to be used as a blitzer, although he lacks the elite athleticism to be used much in coverage. At the very least, McKinney is a good two-down player in the NFL.

Eagles | Matt Barkley available in trade    Tue Mar 17, 07:37 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley is on the trading block, according to those close to the team. The Eagles will likely go with a combination of QB Sam Bradford and QB Mark Sanchez.

Footballguys view: LOL. Barkley would fetch a bag of footballs in a trade. He was a fourth-round pick a couple of years ago, and Barkley has failed to impress any time he's been on the field. There's nothing to see here with his future or potential. We doubt any team would be duped into trading for him.

Eagles | No plans to sign Tim Tebow    Mon Mar 16, 05:46 PM

Free-agent QB Tim Tebow (Patriots) worked out with the Philadelphia Eagles Monday, March 16, but the Eagles have no imminent plans to sign him after his workout.

Footballguys view: We're kind of shocked Tebow got a workout since he's not invited to the NFL veteran combine on Sunday. Tebow would be an interesting fit in Chip Kelly's system. It's similar to the scheme he ran in college at Florida where he finished his Gators career as the most accurate quarterback in SEC history.

Eagles | PHI confident in young receivers    Mon Mar 16, 05:37 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WRs Jordan Matthews and Josh Huff will forcibly have increased roles in 2015 with the departure of WR Jeremy Maclin to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Philadelphia staff is reportedly confident enough in the development of the two receivers, as well as second-year TE Zach Ertz.

Eagles | Sam Bradford to be traded?    Mon Mar 16, 03:15 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is still the subject of trade speculation as coaches attending the West Virginia University Pro Day posited that Bradford could be traded to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for the second overall pick in the NFL Draft this year.

Footballguys view: Now why would the Eagles want to move up in the draft? It's no mystery, they're after Marcus Mariota (Oregon). Even though Chip Kelly said there was no interest in moving up for his former college quarterback, we don't believe him for a second. Kelly needs to find a quarterback who can run his system, and Mariota is that guy.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray's deal is official    Thu Mar 12, 07:13 PM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray's five-year deal is official. The deal is worth $42 million with $21 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Chip Kelly seems to indicate he isn't giving Murray a full load but let's be honest - this is a situation where you are paying a guy a ton of cash so he'll get the ball. Murray is worth a first round pick but don't go nuts and grab him in the top 3. There are too many pitfalls for that, including the presence of Ryan Mathews and Darren Sproles...and oh yeah, Murray's monstrous workload from 2014.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews will sign with PHI    Thu Mar 12, 04:48 PM

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) will indeed sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a source.

Footballguys view: How this shakes out is anyone's guess with DeMarco Murray in the house as well. Well, unless you are a fantasy owner in which case this sounds complicated. It's hard to imagine that Murray was signed with the intent of splitting carries, but recall that prior to 2014, Murray was often hurt--as was Mathews. Chip Kelly might just be playing the odds and protecting himself.

Eagles | Working to trade Evan Mathis    Thu Mar 12, 02:14 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OG Evan Mathis may be traded, as the team is working to move him according to league sources.

Footballguys view: The Eagles are one of the most active teams this offseason. Chip Kelly has full control of personnel, and he is assembling this team in his vision.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray expected contract terms    Thu Mar 12, 01:32 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is expected to sign a five-year contract with the Philadelphia Eagles that will pay $42 million with $21 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: That is a richer contract than most anyone expected on the open market...even for a superstar like Murray.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray expected to join Eagles    Thu Mar 12, 01:06 PM

Updating previous reports, free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is fully expected to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles if all goes well with his visit.

Footballguys view: Wow. Just wow. The Eagles snare a superstar back from a division rival. They traded away LeSean McCoy to the Bills, and now they get an upgrade in Murray. Unlike McCoy, Murray won't dance in the backfield. His straight-ahead style will be a great fit for Chip Kelly's inside/outside zone-read offense.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews yet to sign with Philly    Thu Mar 12, 12:17 PM

Eagles | Philly confident in Sam Bradford    Wed Mar 11, 05:18 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford has confidence from the coaching staff that he can be their starting quarterback moving forward. 'I think he's got an outstanding skill set,' head coach Chip Kelly said. 'He's a big, strong, physical quarterback. He's over 6-4, he's 240 pounds, he's smart, he's intelligent. He's one of the most accurate throwers when you see him throw the football. I think he's smart; I think he's wired right.' Kelly also emphasized the fact that offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur worked with Bradford for a year with the St. Louis Rams, and he vouched for the oft-injured quarterback.

Footballguys view: All of that only matters if Bradford can stay healthy, which has been an issues, including tearing the same ACL twice in the last two years. It is interesting the Kelly focused on Bradford's "wiring", which emphasizes the importance of decision-making in his offense. Bradford certainly has a lot higher fantasy ceiling on the Eagles than he did on the Rams, but he is still only an upside QBBC pick for the second half of drafts.

Eagles | DeMarco Murray interested in Philly    Wed Mar 11, 04:17 PM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is interested in signing with the Philadelphia Eagles, and he called head coach Chip Kelly personally. Murray is familiar with the spread offense from college, and he was new Eagles QB Sam Bradford's roommate in college, too.

Footballguys view: Murray could be a great fantasy back in Philadelphia with a smaller workload than he got last year in Dallas, but the Eagles need to be convinced to spend the money he is asking for. There's still a chance that Murray ends up in Oakland or back in Dallas.

Eagles | Philly still pursuing DeMarco Murray    Wed Mar 11, 02:23 PM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is still being pursued by the Philadelphia Eagles, even though they just signed RB Ryan Mathews.

Footballguys view: This could be coming from Murray's camp to drive up his price, but Chris Polk got a low tender from the team, so it's feasible that they would be looking to add two running backs in free agency. The addition of over 10 million dollars to the books in the form of Sam Bradford's salary might put the kibosh on the Eagles getting into any bidding war for Murray's services.

Eagles | Eagles getting offers for Sam Bradford    Wed Mar 11, 01:48 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Sam Bradford is still getting interest from other teams, as head coach Chip Kelly said a team offered him a first-round pick for Bradford this morning.

Footballguys view: Kelly could be inventing this, trying to set a market for Bradford as part of a trade up for Mariota, or just telling the truth and showing how much he and at least one other team value Bradford. His press conference today showed that he's ready to handle the media in such a way that they are left with more questions than answers, a la Bill Belichick.

Eagles | Philly won't mortgage future for QB    Wed Mar 11, 01:47 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota is the best quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft, according to Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly, but Kelly said the team will not mortgage the future to trade up to draft Mariota.

Footballguys view: Kelly will never get a better opportunity to seamlessly weave a QB totally versed in his offense into his lineup in the NFL. If Mariota succeeds elsewhere and Bradford flops this year for Philadelphia, this comment will be revisited for a long time.

Eagles | Ryan Mathews to visit Philadelphia    Wed Mar 11, 08:57 AM

Free-agent RB Ryan Mathews (Chargers) will visit the Philadelphia Eagles Wednesday, March 11.

Footballguys view: According to Mike Garafolo of Fox Sports, Mathews will sign. While this gives Mathews more speculative value than he had in San Diego, it also opens the door for Chris Polk or any other RB the Eagles add to have playing time if Mathews can't shake his poor durability track record. The Eagles are looking at having one of the most injury prone QB/RB duos in the league.

Eagles | Sam Bradford obtained officially    Tue Mar 10, 06:56 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford has officially been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles also receive a 2015 fifth-round draft pick and surrender QB Nick Foles and a 2015 sixth-round draft pick and a 2016 second-round draft pick. However, the 2016 second-round pick will go back to Philadelphia if Bradford does not start.

Footballguys view: Bradford just needs to stay healthy! He'll be running Chip Kelly's fast-break offense with the Eagles, and he has the short accuracy to look good in this system. It's not too dissimilar from the spread offense he ran in college at Oklahoma. The Eagles still might trade up for Marcus Mariota, but Bradford has the inside track to be the starter this season.

Eagles | Philly eyeing DeMarco Murray    Tue Mar 10, 05:27 PM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) could land with the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency. QB Sam Bradford, who was traded to the Eagles Tuesday, March 10, ran the same offense as Murray in college.

Footballguys view: The Eagles lost out on Frank Gore (Colts), and Murray would be a better option. A better option that comes with a much larger price tag.

Eagles | Kiko Alonso officially acquired    Tue Mar 10, 05:14 PM

Buffalo Bills LB Kiko Alonso has officially been traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for RB LeSean McCoy.

Footballguys view: Alonso is an athletically gifted linebacker who can fly around the field. He played under Chip Kelly in college at Oregon, and he'll be immediately inserted into the starting lineup.

Eagles | Philly close to acquiring Sam Bradford    Tue Mar 10, 04:06 PM

St. Louis Rams QB Sam Bradford is close to being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for QB Nick Foles, according to sources. The Rams will also receive draft-pick compensation in the trade.

Footballguys view: The Eagles and Rams are switching quarterbacks here. Bradford failed to stay healthy and play up to his potential with the Rams, and he needed a fresh start. His accuracy on intermediate routes is exactly what the Eagles need at the position. Foles gets a fresh start in a more traditional offense with the Rams.

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore is reconsidering his decision to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles, according to sources.

Eagles | Brandon Graham re-signed    Mon Mar 9, 04:09 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Brandon Graham signed a four-year contract worth $26 million Monday, March 9, according to a source. Graham will get $14 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: A bit of a coup here for the Eagles as most expected Graham to move on. The Eagles will use him as a pass-rusher opposite Connor Barwin this season. As a starter, he'll get more than the 524 snaps he had last year.

Eagles | Mark Sanchez contract update    Sun Mar 8, 08:15 PM

Eagles | Eagles re-sign Mark Sanchez    Sun Mar 8, 07:17 PM

Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent QB Mark Sanchez has agreed to re-sign with the team, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Sanchez stays with the Eagles, but that doesn't mean he's their starting quarterback. They could trade away Nick Foles in order to move up in the 2015 NFL draft so they could secure the services of Marcus Mariota (Oregon). If they get Mariota, he would be seen as the franchise quarterback and he would immediately compete with Sanchez for the starting job.

Eagles | Byron Maxwell contract update    Sun Mar 8, 07:06 PM

Eagles | Frank Gore contract update    Sun Mar 8, 06:07 PM

Free-agent RB Frank Gore (49ers) will be paid $7.5 million in guaranteed money in his first two years of a three-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right for the veteran running back. He doesn't break the bank, but he gets to be the lead back on an explosive offense and he's getting a nice chunk of guaranteed scratch.

Eagles | Interested in Devin McCourty     Sun Mar 8, 05:44 PM

Free-agent FS Devin McCourty (Patriots) is attracting interest from the Philadelphia Eagles, who just signed CB Byron Maxwell on Sunday, March 8.

Footballguys view: We told you they weren't done yet! The Eagles want to use the ton of cap space they freed up over the last week or so. Signing top CB Byron Maxwell is a start, but they still need another piece or two in the secondary. McCourty would be another top free agent, as many consider him the best free safety available on the open market.

Eagles | Byron Maxwell agrees to terms    Sun Mar 8, 04:42 PM

Seattle Seahawks impending free-agent CB Byron Maxwell has reportedly agreed to a five-year deal with the Philadelphia Eagles worth between $53 million and $54 million. He is expected to receive $25 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: The deal can't become official until Tuesday, but this move was expected. The Eagles jumped through a lot of hoops to free up the cap space. Snaring Maxwell gives them one of the best cornerbacks available on the open market. They're not done yet, expect more moves to upgrade their secondary.

Eagles | PHI expected to land Frank Gore    Sun Mar 8, 04:37 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore has told people he plans to sign with the Philadelphia Eagles this week, according to multiple league sources.

Footballguys view: The Eagles traded away LeSean McCoy to the Bills, so the opening is there for Gore. He's not quite the same as he used to be, but Gore could certainly be the lead back for the Eagles. This means he'll split time with Darren Sproles and Chris Polk in their RBBC.

Eagles | PHI interested in Orlando Franklin    Sun Mar 8, 04:24 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly interested in free-agent OG Orlando Franklin (Broncos), according to two NFL sources.

Footballguys view: We're not sure if they want him at tackle or at guard. Franklin played most of his career in Denver at right tackle, but he was moved to left guard last year and did a decent job. He's a mauler as a run-blocker, but he does struggle (both inside and outside) against good pass-rushers.

Eagles | Philly pursuing Frank Gore    Sun Mar 8, 12:23 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent RB Frank Gore is receiving interest from the Philadelphia Eagles, and a deal could be finalized as early as Tuesday, March 10, according to source.

Footballguys view: No running back is going to get a ton of money on the open market...maybe DeMarco Murray, but not Gore. He's not quite the player he used to be, but Gore could be a more than capable starter for the Eagles. If added, he's going to split time in the backfield with Darren Sproles and Chris Polk.

Free-agent CB Byron Maxwell (Seahawks) is close to signing a deal to join the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a report.

Eagles | Eagles, Mark Sanchez could reunite    Sat Mar 7, 09:31 PM

Free-agent QB Mark Sanchez and the Philadelphia Eagles have a strong mutual interest in reuniting next season, according to a person close to the situation.

Footballguys view: Sanchez is arguably the best player available in a poor free agent class of quarterbacks. The Eagles are going to try and move up in the draft for QB Marcus Mariota (Oregon), but they would need a veteran quarterback to back him up if they trade away Nick Foles.

Philadelphia Eagles restricted free-agent DE Cedric Thornton has received a second-round tender offer from the Eagles. Thornton will make $2.356 million in 2015 if he signs the offer.

Footballguys view: Thornton is likely to stay with the Eagles with this tender. Originally an undrafted free agent for the Eagles in 2011, Thornton has worked hard to prove himself as a quality run-stopper at the pro level.

Eagles | Philly a landing spot for Percy Harvin?    Fri Mar 6, 06:40 PM

New York Jets WR Percy Harvin, who is expected to be released, could be a perfect fit for the Philadelphia Eagles and head coach Chip Kelly's high-octane offense. Harvin's skill set matches Kelly's system, too, which emphasizes run-after-the-catch ability. However, Harvin's tarnished reputation may not sit well with Kelly.

Footballguys view: Harvin is a good fit for the system, and he could be a dangerous weapon for the Eagles. His perceived attitude problems may not get him many offers on the open market.
