Eagles | Clay Harbor thinks versatility will help    Sat May 18, 01:47 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Clay Harbor indicated he hopes seeing some time at outside linebacker during organized team activities will help his chances to make the final roster because of his versatility. Harbor said he is still a tight end but is learning linebacker for emergency purposes.

Eagles | Jason Avant works with defense    Sat May 18, 12:31 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jason Avant saw some time as a defensive back during organized team activities this week. Avant does not believe his work with the defense clouds his future with the team.

Footballguys view: Avant is battling for a roster spot at the end of the WR corps. Working on defensive back isn't a great sign for his security on the depth chart. Chip Kelly had TE Clay Harbor working on defense (OLB) too.

Eagles | Two WRs could compete for one spot    Fri May 17, 06:06 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WRs Riley Cooper and Arrelious Benn may have to compete for one roster spot during training camp. Both are bigger receivers that can block and play special teams.

Footballguys view: Benn needed a change of scenery after failing to stay healthy and play up to his potential with the Buccaneers. Cooper is the seasoned veteran who is fearless when running routes over the middle. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in training camp.

Eagles | Believe Felix Jones can contribute    Fri May 17, 06:00 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles believes RB Felix Jones can make the final roster and contribute on offense this season.

Footballguys view: Chip Kelly's offense at Oregon ran the ball 685 times in 2012. He may not run it that much this year with the Eagles but they will be a run heavy team. Jones gives them depth behind LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown. Playing as a third-string back with limited touches could help keep Jones fresh.

Eagles | Three TEs expected to receive playing time     Fri May 17, 04:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly indicated TEs Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and James Casey are expected to receive playing time during games this season.

Footballguys view: There could be plenty of targets for the TEs in the Kelly system this year. Celek is the leader of the group and could be the featured player at the position. He has a $4.5MM cap number this year and may be asked to take a pay cut before we get to training camp. It will be interesting to see how this position battle and the targets therein shake out.

Eagles | Michael Vick looks bigger    Fri May 17, 01:17 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick looks motivated to succeed this year. '(Vick's) noticeably bigger and enthused about the offense,' Philadelphia Inquirer's Zach Berman writes. Vick was in a system that had less designed runs for him last year, but the offense under new head coach Chip Kelly could play better to his strengths with an improved offensive line. Vick took snaps with the first team during organized team activities this week, and he's the favorite to start in Week 1 over QB Nick Foles.

Footballguys view: If Vick wins the starting job he's going to run a lot more than he did in 2012. That added bulk will help him stand up to the NFL beating he's going to take in Chip Kelly's zone read offense.

Eagles | Will look at Jeremy Maclin as returner    Thu May 16, 02:48 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said the team will look at WR Jeremy Maclin as a punt returner during organized team activities. Kelly said Maclin had experience as a returner but is not sure if Maclin will be used in the role. Maclin indicated he would be open to returning punts.

Footballguys view: Maclin is dangerous in the open field because he's fast and can make defenders miss. We'll see if he can impress given this new opportunity in training camp.

Eagles | Barkley showing 'fantastic' accuracy    Tue May 14, 08:45 PM

Albert Breer, from NFL Network, is reporting via Twitter that rookie QB Matt Barkley has shown 'fantastic' accuracy in Eagles minicamp.

Footballguys view: Barkley may be third in the QB competition behind Michael Vick and Nick Foles but he's working hard to prove himself in camp. The Chip Kelly system requires the QB to make quick decisions and accurately distribute the football to the skill position players. Barkley is a good fit for what the coach wants.

Eagles | Felix Jones does not know what his role will be    Tue May 14, 03:02 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Felix Jones does not know what his role will be with the team, or what type of offense the team plays. Jones does not want to get ahead of himself.

Footballguys view: Jones will find out soon enough. The Eagles are going to be a run heavy offense under Chip Kelly. Last year the Oregon Ducks ran the ball 685 times under Kelly and featured the inside zone read. That offense should be exciting to watch because the spread and the tempo. The team needs quality talent at the RB position and Jones will compete with Chris Polk and Miguel Maysonet to be the third-string RB behind LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown.

Eagles | Felix Jones says he is completely healthy    Tue May 14, 02:36 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Felix Jones (knee) said he is completely healthy. 'Feeling good ... Feeling fast,' Jones said. Jones dealt with a knee issue in 2012.

Footballguys view: Jones has been plagued by durability concerns over the course of his entire pro career. In a limited role he could run effectively and stay healthy with his new team.

Eagles | LeSean McCoy sued    Tue May 14, 02:23 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy has been sued for an incident on a party bus. The team is aware of the allegations and has no comment.

Footballguys view: This lawsuit stems from an incident aboard a New Year's Eve party bus. McCoy admits kicking the woman off the bus but denies any sort of assault. No criminal charges in this case have been filed.

Eagles | Marvin McNutt cut    Tue May 14, 11:12 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles released WR Marvin McNutt.

Footballguys view: McNutt was a sixth-round pick by the Eagles last year but recorded no catches as a rookie. He's a big, physical wide receiver with good straight line speed. McNutt struggles to get open but may be able to find a spot with another team for training camp.

Eagles | Felix Jones signs    Tue May 14, 08:29 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles signed free-agent RB Felix Jones (Cowboys) to a one-year deal.

Footballguys view: The Eagles could be the most run heavy team in 2013. Chip Kelly's offense spreads the defense out and is based off the inside zone read. Jones will battle Chris Polk and Miguel Maysonet for the third-string job behind LeSean McCoy and Bryce Brown.

Eagles | Donovan McNabb to retire with team    Tue May 14, 08:10 AM

Free-agent QB Donovan McNabb (Vikings) said on his radio show that he will retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles in September.

Footballguys view: McNabb played 11 seasons with the Eagles and led the team to 5 NFC Championship Games and 1 Super Bowl. The Eagles will host the Chiefs (and former coach Andy Reid) on Thursday September 19th and that's when the ceremony for McNabb will be. Now the debate can start about whether or not he deserves to be in the Hall of Fame.

Eagles | Lane Johnson does not work with starters    Mon May 13, 03:21 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson did not work with the first-team offense during the organized team activities Monday, May 13. OT Dennis Kelly worked at right tackle with the starting offense. Head coach Chip Kelly said people should not read much into Johnson not working with starters.

Footballguys view: The Eagles drafted Johnson with the fourth overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft. It would be surprising if he doesn't begin the season in the starting lineup.

Eagles | Michael Vick, Nick Foles share reps    Mon May 13, 03:04 PM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles split reps with the first-team offense during organized team activities Monday, May 13.

Footballguys view: Kelly said both quarterbacks are on equal ground right now. This battle will unfold during training camp. Rookie QB Matt Barkley may be considered a dark horse in this race.

Eagles | Nick Foles taking snaps with first team    Mon May 13, 11:57 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles is taking snaps with the first team Monday, May 13. QB Michael Vick is working with the second team.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Foles and Vick will be swapping first-team reps as the team goes through OTAs and training camp. Eagles coach Chip Kelly said Foles is on equal ground with Vick at this point. This QB battle will play out during camp and we're not expecting a starter to emerge until the third week of the preseason.

Eagles | Two released    Mon May 13, 10:37 AM

The Philadelphia Eagles released WR DeMarco Sampson and DT Ronnie Cameron.

Footballguys view: Sampson was a seventh-round pick by the Cardinals in 2011. He's got an intriguing size/speed combination but durability and inconsistency have prevented him from developing as a pro.

Eagles | Matt Barkely could win QB job    Sun May 12, 03:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley could have a chance to win the starting quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Anything could happen in Philadelphia. Barkley has the skill set to be successful in a Chip Kelly offense. He makes quick decisions and can accurately deliver the football on underneath routes and screen passes. Barkley will compete with Michael Vick and Nick Foles for the starting job in training camp.

Eagles | Matt Barkley said he will fit in offense    Sat May 11, 01:13 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley said he will make himself fit into whichever offense head coach Chip Kelly wants to use. 'You know, I'll make it fit,' he said. 'It doesn't matter what plays we run, I'm going to find a way to help this team out, and I know Coach Kelly has a way of working things out as well in terms of how he schemes and how he calls plays, so I'm not worried. I'm just worried about the here and now and what I can do right now.'

Footballguys view: Kelly's offense requires the quarterback to make quick decisions and get the ball to the skill players via pass or handoff. If also requires the quarterback to zone read the best rusher away from the play side. Barkley is not a scrambler but that doesn't make him a bad fit. In fact, his accuracy and high football intelligence is a good match for this system.

Eagles | LeSean McCoy expects to have productive season    Thu May 9, 02:46 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy said he expects to have a very productive season in head coach Chip Kelly's offense in 2013. 'We have tons of different sets with different backs. You run so much,' McCoy said. 'There are so many different fast-paced movements from motioning out, from running routes and things like that. It's so open. You're trying to get guys in the open field. This is a good offense.' McCoy said he expects RBs Bryce Brown and Chris Polk to receive playing time because of the type of offense the team will use.

Footballguys view: We're expecting McCoy to have a top 5 fantasy season again in 2013. Under Chip Kelly the Oregon offense had 685 rushing attempts in 2012. The Kelly offense is a run based system based off of inside zone read. Kelly spreads the field out with the formation and then zone reads the best defender on the outside. This gives them another blocker on the play side and creates big rushing lanes for the running backs.

Eagles | Work out Felix Jones    Tue May 7, 04:20 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles worked out free-agent RB Felix Jones (Cowboys) Tuesday, May 7.

Footballguys view: The Eagles are going to run the ball a lot under Chip Kelly. Last year his former team the Oregon Ducks ran the ball 685 times. Jones has durability concerns and hasn't gotten much interest on the free agent market. If added he could compete with Chris Polk and Miguel Maysonet for the third-string job behind LeSean McCoy and Byrce Brown.

Eagles | Lane Johnson likely to play RT    Sun May 5, 01:35 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles will start OT Lane Johnson at right tackle this season and keep OT Jason Peters at left tackle.

Footballguys view: The move makes sense for the Eagles. When healthy, Peters is one of the best in the game. Johnson came to Oklahoma after starting his career as a quarterback at Kilgore College. He was originally a tight end for the Sooners, but also played defensive end before finding his spot on the O-Line. Johnson played right tackle in 2011, starting 12 games at that position. 2012 was his lone season of playing left tackle.

Eagles | Danny Watkins could be released    Sun May 5, 01:35 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles may consider releasing OG Danny Watkins if he does not win one of the starting guard jobs during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Watkins has struggled mightily during his pro career. The former first-round pick lacks the quickness off the line to set his base against interior pressure.

Eagles | Michael Vick could be released if not starting    Fri May 3, 05:27 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles could release QB Michael Vick if he does not win the starting quarterback job this season. Vick is believed to be the favorite for the job at this point.

Footballguys view: He'll compete with Nick Foles and rookie Matt Barkley in training camp for the starting job. Vick has the athleticism needed to run the Chip Kelly offense but some question whether or not he can make quicker decisions as a passer. Getting rid of the ball quickly is a must in Kelly's system.

Eagles | Rookie QB Barkley cool under pressure    Fri May 3, 03:12 PM

Eagles fourth-round selection, QB Matt Barkley, threw 44 touchdowns and only six interceptions during his college career at USC when opponents blitzed.

Footballguys view: Barkley is a better fit for the Chip Kelly system than some people think. He's incredibly smart and understands complex coverages and where to go with the football. The new Chip Kelly system is geared around quick decisions from the quarterback. Barkley will compete with Michael Vick and Nick Foles for the starting job in 2013. Even if he doesn't win the job this year the future could be bright for Barkley in this system.

Eagles | Matt Barkley looking to make an impact     Fri May 3, 11:08 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley said he is confident he can come in and make an immediate impact for the team. 'Without a doubt, I have confidence that I can come in right away and make an impact, or just help the team in whatever way I can,' Barkley said. Barkley added he believes he can be a good fit in new head coach Chip Kelly's system.

Footballguys view: Barkley is a better fit for the Kelly system than some people think. He's a smart QB who completed over 65% of his passes with 23 TDS and 3 INTs when outside the pocket, including 16 TDs on designed roll outs. Some say he lacks a deep arm but the numbers don't back that up. Over the last two years Barkley threw 24 TD passes of 20 yards or longer with only two INTs in 120 attempts of that distance.

Eagles | Evan Moore let go    Mon Apr 29, 05:24 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles have released TE Evan Moore.

Footballguys view: The Eagles added Stanford TE Zach Ertz in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft so this move comes as no surprise. Moore has never developed his pro game and the former Stanford basketball player may be running out of time to prove himself in the NFL.

Eagles | Nine undrafted players signed    Mon Apr 29, 05:11 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed undrafted free-agent LB Jake Knott (Iowa State), RB Miguel Maysonet (Stony Brook), C Kyle Quinn (Arizona), DL Isaac Remington (Oregon), WR Russell Shepard (Louisiana State), DL Damion Square (Alabama), OG Matt Tobin (Iowa), RB Matthew Tucker (Texas Christian) and P Brad Wing (Louisiana State). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Deep dynasty league owners need to keep an eye on Maysonet and Shepard here. Maysonet is a compact runner who was hyper-productive in college at Stony Brook. He averaged 151.1 rushing yards per game which ranked second in the nation. He didn't just beat up on weak competition as evidenced by his 158 yard performance against Syracuse. He's a violent runner with quickness. Shepard came to LSU as the number one athlete in the nation and initially tried his hand at quarterback. He transitioned to wide receiver and never developed. He's an intriguing deep prospect.

Eagles | Matt Barkley ready for minicamp    Mon Apr 29, 02:10 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley (shoulder) said he will be ready to throw during the team's upcoming minicamp. He was not able to throw at the Senior Bowl or NFL Scouting combine because of a separated shoulder.

Footballguys view: Don't underestimate the addition of Barkley to the Eagles. He may have slipped to the fourth-round but we expect him to be in the mix for the starting job in training camp. The Chip Kelly system is built around quick decisions from QBs who process information quickly. That's a hallmark of Barkley's game.

Eagles | Matt Barkley good to go    Mon Apr 29, 10:09 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley (shoulder) said he's good to go for OTAs.

Footballguys view: Good news for Barkley here. Some say he's an odd fit for the Chip Kelly system. We're actually intrigued by the fit. Barkley completed over 65% of his passes with 23 TDs and 3 INTs when outside the pocket in his career, including 16 TDs on designed roll outs. Kelly's system asks the QB to roll out quite a bit. Barkley is also good at releasing the ball quickly, which is a hallmark of the Kelly offense.

Eagles | Matt Barkley selected    Sat Apr 27, 12:05 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles have selected Southern California QB Matt Barkley with the 98th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: A surprise selection by the Eagles, signalling that nothing is settled under center for the Eagles. Barkley cost himself a lot of money short term, but long term this could be a great landing spot as he should end up with time to develop and smooth out the rough edges of his game. Barkley's flaws showed up his Senior year and there are durability concerns for him to go with arm strength and deep ball accuracy questions. Now he'll have time to disprove those issues.

Eagles | Zach Ertz selected 35th overall    Fri Apr 26, 06:50 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles selected Stanford TE Zach Ertz with the 35th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: It's exciting to think about what Chip Kelly might do with a talented player like Ertz, a strong, tough receiver who isn't an elite athlete but gets the job done. If he can get stronger and come down with more contested balls, he could be a very big part of this offense.

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly completed his first day of picks Thursday, April 25, in his first NFL Draft as head coach. The team added OT Lane Johnson with the fourth overall selection. 'We felt he was the most athletic tackle that we had seen. We had him in, went down and worked him out privately, then had him in for a visit just a little while ago. (He has) a huge upside,' Kelly said. 'He hasn't played a ton of offensive tackle, but he has played the right side and the left side, so he does have experience at both sides.'
