Eagles | Lane Johnson suspended four games    Wed Jul 23, 02:38 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Eagles here. The team has arguably the best offensive line in the entire NFL. Losing Johnson will push veteran Allen Barbre into the starting job at right tackle.

Eagles | Darren Sproles could be matchup problem for defenses    Tue Jul 22, 11:03 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles' ability to win one-on-one matchups in space is what head coach Chip Kelly plans to exploit this season. Kelly said opposing defenses played a lot of man-to-man coverage against his offense last year, and his goal was to find a way to exploit the coverage this year.

Footballguys view: We are incredibly excited by the idea of Sproles working under Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. Reports indicate that LeSean McCoy's workload will not decline this year. Sproles should be used mostly as a receiver out of the backfield. His current ADP is RB31 (7.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Eagles | Keelan Johnson arrested    Mon Jul 21, 08:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles FS Keelan Johnson was arrested Monday, July 21, in Arizona, according to a report. He is reportedly charged with assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, and disorderly conduct.

Eagles | LeSean McCoy's workload won't be lightened    Thu Jul 17, 12:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy is unlikely to be in line for a smaller workload this year after leading the league in carries (314) and touches (366) last year. There were no signs that McCoy's production suffered because of his heavy workload in 2013, and he often mentions that his running style helps him take fewer big hits.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Some thought with the addition of Darren Sproles there would be a drop in touches for McCoy. At this time, that doesn't sound like the case. McCoy has a current ADP of RB1 (1.02) in 12-team PPR leagues. Sproles is checking in at RB31 (7.01).

Eagles | Three RBs to battle for spot    Thu Jul 17, 12:22 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RBs Matthew Tucker, Henry Josey and David Fluellen will battle it out in training camp and the preseason for the fourth running back spot. Tucker earned praise from head coach Chip Kelly earlier in the offseason. The Eagles are more likely to keep four running backs on roster this year given that RB Darren Sproles is 31 years old.

Eagles | Insist Darren Sproles is a running back    Thu Jul 17, 12:20 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles is a running back and not a wide receiver, the team continues to emphasize. The team's brass has bristled at the notion that Sproles will only help in the passing game. However, Sproles averaged 3.5 and 3.7 rushing attempts per game the last two years and caught 146 passes during that span, meaning he's likely to be a much bigger factor in the passing game in head coach Chip Kelly's offense.

Footballguys view: Kelly's system is perfect for a back like Sproles. The inside zone/outside zone read formations always give the team an extra blocker on the play side, and Sproles should be able to take advantage of the extra room. He'll work as a complementary back behind LeSean McCoy this season.

Eagles | Teammate impressed with Darren Sproles    Wed Jul 16, 02:35 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy said he has been impressed with RB Darren Sproles and expects Sproles to help the offense. 'Sproles has the quickest feet I've ever seen out of any player,' McCoy said. 'He'll help us out tremendously. I think the best thing about him, what he brings to this team is not only leadership and experience, but also just another big playmaker on the team.'

Footballguys view: It's going to be interesting to see how Chip Kelly uses Sproles this year. It will also be interesting to see how much Sproles cuts into the touches and targets for McCoy. Sproles has a current ADP of RB31 (7.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Eagles | Trent Cole feeling good, not done yet    Tue Jul 15, 05:11 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Trent Cole said earlier this week he feels good and believes he has at least three years left in the tank. With his experience, Cole said he knows how to rush the passer the right way and knows more about the game in general.

Eagles | Chris Polk in line for more carries    Mon Jul 14, 10:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Chris Polk should serve as RB LeSean McCoy's primary backup this year with RB Darren Sproles maintaining a secondary role in the offense, according to ESPN.com's Joe Kaiser.

Footballguys view: Polk is a talented back and a fantastic receiver out of the backfield. He fell undrafted in 2012 due to concerns about chronic shoulder problems that plagued him in college. So long as he's healthy, Polk should be a fine reserve player behind McCoy. With Bryce Brown getting traded to the Bills earlier this offseason, it looks like Polk is the back fantasy owners should handcuff to McCoy. At the very least, Polk should be on your waiver wire speed dial.

Eagles | Jordan Matthews receives praise    Mon Jul 14, 03:12 PM

Philadelphia Eagles rookie WR Jordan Matthews was recently praised by wide receivers coach Bob Bicknell, who said Matthews has looked very good, is physical and has a good feel for what he wants to do.

Footballguys view: Expect to hear this story a lot in the future. Matthews is a sharp route-runner who is clutch in pressure situations. Think of him like you would Eric Decker (Jets). Matthews is not an elite athlete, but he is savvy and can be a consistent/reliable receiver.

Eagles | Brandon Graham may not make team    Sun Jul 13, 11:54 PM

Eagles | Jaylen Watkins expected to help on special teams    Wed Jul 9, 12:34 PM

Eagles | Brent Celek could be stuck blocking a lot     Tue Jul 8, 08:14 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Brent Celek will likely spend more time blocking than running routes this year, according to Marcus Hayes of Philly.com. With OT Dennis Kelly (back) working his way back from an injury and OT Lane Johnson being suspended the first four games, Celek is more valuable to the team as a blocker.

Footballguys view: Zach Ertz and even James Casey could get more targets early on with this development. It helps Ertz's case for a hot start while Celek is kept in to block, and eliminates what little fantasy value Celek had.

Eagles | Nick Foles focusing on improving    Tue Jul 8, 05:16 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles recently said his goals for this season include continuing to move better in the pocket, to be more efficient and to stay tight. He added that he wants to be smart with the ball and find his checkdowns early. Foles admitted improvement is 'an everyday thing, but so far, we're looking good.'

Footballguys view: Foles is smart to acknowledge that his game needs some improvement. While his numbers from last year were nearly spotless, his play was not. This opens up the possibility of a dropoff, but with more familiarity in the Chip Kelly offense and better pocket movement and decisions, he just might stay in the top five fantasy quarterbacks again this year.

Philadelphia Eagles DE Cedric Thornton, DT Bennie Logan and DT Fletcher Cox are expected to remain the team's starting defensive front this season, according to ESPN.com's Andy Jasner.   Eagles | Backup QB job still a toss-up    Mon Jul 7, 11:50 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mark Sanchez and QB Matt Barkley are still in a tight competition for the backup QB job, according to ESPN.com's Andy Jasner.

Footballguys view: Barkley was the subject of some very negative reports that had journeyman GJ Kinne outplaying him at times in OTAs, so we'll give the edge to Sanchez.

Eagles | Marcus Smith could make quick impact    Mon Jul 7, 11:41 PM

Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Billy Davis believes LB Marcus Smith can make an early impact because he is already familiar with the team's defense. 'Marcus has shown to do it in college,' Davis told Phillymag.com. 'That's one of the biggest things that attracted us to Marcus. The defense he ran at Louisville is very, very similar. ... Charlie Strong ran very similar to what we asked him to do here. So that was why it made such a nice fit for us.'

Eagles | Connor Barwin expected to rush more    Mon Jul 7, 02:22 PM

Eagles | Ifeanyi Momah wants to utilize his size    Thu Jul 3, 03:41 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Ifeanyi Momah wants to use his size (6-foot-7) to his advantage to help earn a roster spot with the team. Last training camp, Momah struggled adjusting to the pace of the Eagles offense, and he felt he didn't utilize his size. Head Coach Chip Kelly has seen a marked improvement over last year. Momah is competing against WRs Arrelious Benn, Brad Smith and Josh Huff for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: Momah is 6'7" and 229 pounds, so he's a load to deal with at wide receiver. He's also really raw overall and hasn't stuck in previous stints with the Eagles and Miami Dolphins.

Eagles | Alejandro Villanueva impresses DL coach    Thu Jul 3, 03:38 PM

Philadelphia Eagles DL Alejandro Villanueva's athleticism and physical skills were praised by defensive line coach Jerry Azzinaro. Azzinaro also said, 'He has great character: his toughness, his ability to perform under pressure, those kinds of things are well-documented. So what we're going to try to do is see if we can make him into a four-technique." Villanueva played multiple positions in college but is competing against DEs Fletcher Cox, Vinny Curry, Cedric Thornton and Taylor Hart for playing time on the defensive line.

Footballguys view: Villanueva just spent the last four years as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan. There is certainly no question about mental toughness or determination here. He also has extraordinary size (6'9", 277)and moves well, having shown enough athleticism at Army to line up at wideout on occasion. He's a longshot to make the roster but it's clear he's made an impression already.

Eagles | LeSean McCoy praises Nick Foles    Thu Jul 3, 03:21 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy praised QB Nick Foles, saying this is the year Foles has a great season. 'Nick, he wants to play, he wants to get better,' McCoy said. 'He's playing lights-out even in camp, but he still wants to be at a higher level. He's at that peak where people know him like, 'Man, this Foles, is he that good?' Because you see the stats, you see the numbers. I think this is the year he blows 'em out like, 'Yeah, I'm Nick Foles. I'm Philadelphia's quarterback. I'm the guy.' And this is the year he blows it away.'

Footballguys view: As we mentioned in response to an earlier report, Foles is a tough read because he doesn't have a lot of history to look at but what he does have looks really good. So how much do you trust him? Our staff expects a good year and has him ranked as a lower-tier QB1, despite the changing of the guard at receiver and some questions about the offensive line with the suspension of Lane Johnson.

Eagles | LeSean McCoy thinks Nick Foles is the real deal    Thu Jul 3, 11:34 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeSean McCoy fully expects QB Nick Foles to continue succeeding in the team's offense the way he did last season. 'Nick, he wants to play, he wants to get better. He's playing lights out even in camp, but he still wants to be at a higher level,' McCoy said. 'He's at that peak where people know him like, 'Man, this Foles, is he that good?' Because you see the stats, you see the numbers. I think this is the year he blows 'em out like, 'Yeah, I'm Nick Foles. I'm Philadelphia's quarterback. I'm the guy.' And this is the year he blows it away.'

Footballguys view: There has been some back and forth between national and local writers regarding Foles as on the one hand we have precious little history to go by while on the other hand what we did see last year was impressive. Our staff largely has him as a low-end QB1 and we expect a good year. There is some concern with the departure of DeSean Jackson, especially paired with a Riley Cooper not everyone is sold on and Jeremy Maclin's return from injury, but we feel pretty confident right now.

Eagles | Jordan Matthews more comfortable    Wed Jul 2, 01:52 PM

Philadelphia Eagles rookie WR Jordan Matthews recently said he's getting more comfortable with his duties and his transition to the NFL. He also admitted he needs to continue to get better.

Footballguys view: Matthews is not a superstar in the making, but he certainly could be a solid pro for years to come. Think of him in the same way that you would Eric Decker (Jets). Matthews is a good route-runner, can win at the point of the catch and is fearless running routes over the middle of the field. Like Decker, Matthews isn't that quick or fast so gaining separation against elite corners may be more difficult. We love the Chip Kelly offense, and we're curious to see how Matthews fits in this year.

Eagles | Allen Barbre could start at RT    Mon Jun 30, 04:47 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OT Allen Barbre could start at right tackle if OT Lane Johnson is suspended four games for violating the policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

Footballguys view: That would be the best move for the Eagles. The team recently signed Barbre to a three-year extension, and he's got plenty of experience as a pro. It is a downgrade from what Johnson brings to the field, but they won't be falling off a cliff by starting Barbre.

Eagles | No suspension for Lane Johnson yet    Mon Jun 30, 04:45 PM

Updating a previous report, the NFL has not suspended Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson four games for violating the policy on performance-enhancing drugs at this point, according to an NFL spokesperson.

Footballguys view: "At this point" is the key phrasing here. It sounds like there's something coming down the mountain for Johnson. We're likely to see the league's decision in the near future.

Eagles | Lane Johnson suspended    Mon Jun 30, 03:15 PM

Philadelphia Eagles OT Lane Johnson has been suspended four games for allegedly testing positive for performance enhancing drugs, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Johnson had bulked up this offseason, and there must have been a problem with what he used to do that. The Eagles have veteran Allen Barbre as the next guy up to fill in at right tackle while Johnson misses the first month of the year.

Eagles | New kicker possible?     Mon Jun 30, 02:38 AM

Because PKs Alex Henery and Carey Spear are struggling, it is possible the team could bring in a new kicker. Henery can hit field goals but has no distance on kickoffs, while Spear is just the opposite. Both specialists could be unseated by a free agent signing like PK Rob Bironas (Titans).

Eagles | Darren Sproles' work ethic praised    Wed Jun 25, 12:36 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB Darren Sproles received praise about his work ethic from Eagles head coach Chip Kelly. 'We heard from the coaches that coached him what an intelligent football player he is and [we] learned that from the first day he was in this building and how sharp he is and how dedicated he is,' Kelly said. 'I talked to Norv Turner and he remarked to me when I saw him at one of the pro days, he said, 'You'll have to slow him down because he only knows one speed.' And that's the same thing you see. Darren practices and trains at one speed. It's awesome. He fits in with the culture that we want in terms of preparation, but it's everything we wanted when we got him here.'

Footballguys view: Sproles is forecast to have a big dip in receptions in Philadelphia compared to his usage in New Orleans, but he is also being penciled in as the backup running back and could get more touches as a runner in a very good running game. While his fantasy value has fallen off significantly from his near RB1 status in PPR leagues recently, he could still deliver on his 6th-8th ADP this year as a swiss army knife for the Eagles, who sought out his services via trade.

Eagles | OC impressed with Nick Foles' smarts    Fri Jun 20, 05:09 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles has impressed new quarterbacks coach Bill Musgrave with his ability to process everything that is happening on the field quickly. 'We know he's a gifted athlete. He can throw the ball exactly where he wants to. He can add air, add touch. He can add velocity and really drive it when it's needed. But to see the way that he can visualize formations, coverages, and process what he sees has been impressive,' Musgrave said. Musgrave thinks Foles can work on getting rid of the ball faster, taking fewer hits and moving the ball forward with his legs when needed.

Footballguys view: Foles had an outstanding season in 2013, throwing for 27 touchdowns and only two interceptions. We'll see if he can make the jump to the next level in 2014. Fantasy owners are expecting a jump from Foles this season. His current ADP is QB6 (6.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Eagles | Matt Barkley struggles    Wed Jun 18, 09:15 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Matt Barkley struggled Tuesday, June 17. He was errant on three consecutive downfield passes in head coach Chip Kelly's drill in which he has the quarterbacks throw all passes to undefended receivers at the same time.

Footballguys view: Barkley has reportedly been outplayed by journeyman GJ Kinne at times, and could be fighting for his roster spot this summer if Kinne keeps it up. His fall from being considered a potential #1 overall pick two years ago has been striking and a warning to any college quarterback who gets intoxicated by his draft projections while he's still in school.

Eagles | Jeremy Maclin practicing at full speed    Tue Jun 17, 10:31 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jeremy Maclin (knee) has been working without restrictions since the team began practicing this spring. Maclin is recovering from a torn ACL in his right knee that he suffered last July, and he has not experienced any setbacks since he began practicing. 'I've done everything since April 21st, when we were able to get out here as a team,' Maclin said. 'I've been getting better each and every day, and I'm really happy with my progress.'

Footballguys view: Maclin is on or even ahead of schedule, but he is still a tough sell at his current 6th/7th round ADP because he has never stayed completely healthy for a long stretch, and now he has to share with a bevy of talented targets in a run-first offense.

Eagles | Jordan Matthews the favorite for the slot    Tue Jun 17, 10:23 PM

Philadelphia Eagles WR Jordan Matthews seems to be the early favorite for the slot wide receiver position with the team this year. He is competing with WR Josh Huff. 'Matthews is a big, physical, athletic guy that is going to I think do really well. I love his attitude. He's been a great teammate,' QB Nick Foles said.

Footballguys view: Matthews should win that job, although there aren't many truly "full-time" jobs in the Eagles offense under Chip Kelly. Zach Ertz and Darren Sproles will certainly end up lined up in the slot at times, and there are at least five very good targets in this offense. Matthews should have fantasy relevance in his rookie season, but a rise to everyweek starter status would probably require a Jeremy Maclin or Riley Cooper injury. For now, he's Marques Colston in a much less pass happy offense.

Philadelphia Eagles MLB DeMeco Ryans played 96 percent of his team's snaps last season, and the team wants to reduce that in 2014 to keep him healthy for the long haul.

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey expects to contribute on special teams this upcoming season but hopes to receive some playing time with the offense as well. He is currently behind TEs Brent Celek and Zach Ertz on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Casey is a jack of all trades, but a master of none. He can play several different positions, but you don't get fantasy points for versatility. The shine has been long gone from his dynasty value as well.

Footballguys view: Sanchez is likely to win the backup job behind Nick Foles this year. We'll see Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne compete for the third-string job. Sanchez is a buy low in super deep dynasty leagues. His career went off track with the Jets, but working in Chip Kelly's offense could help rejuvenate is value.

Footballguys view: Matthews has good upside as a pro. He's a fine route-runner, and he knows how to get separation at the top of his route. Matthews has good hands and concentration, and he can haul in contested passes. Most impressive of all, Matthews is clutch. He's best when the pressure is on.
