Saints | Brandon Coleman has stiff competition    Wed Jun 22, 11:40 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman needs a strong training camp and preseason to secure his roster spot, as the team drafted a similar type of receiver in WR Michael Thomas.

Footballguys view: Another beat writer predicted that Coleman would hold off Thomas and become the third wide receiver, but Thomas had a tremendous spring and riffed with Drew Brees from the word go, so Coleman might be unnecessary. If the Saints let him go, he should get interest from other teams, as Coleman's size/speed combination is hard to find, and "big slot" types are getting more use around the league.

Saints | Austin Johnson's job security unclear    Wed Jun 22, 11:40 PM

New Orleans Saints FB Austin Johnson is the only fullback on the roster currently. He has been on and off the roster recently, and his status heading into the season hinges on whether the team decides they need a fullback.

Saints | NOLA backup RB spots up for grabs    Wed Jun 22, 11:39 PM

New Orleans Saints RBs Travaris Cadet, Daniel Lasco, Marcus Murphy are likely to jockey for the spots behind RBs Mark Ingram, Tim Hightower and C.J. Spiller. Murphy and Lasco benefit special teams, with Murphy as a return man and Lasco for coverage. Cadet might also crack the roster as a runner, receiver and return man, and the final spot might come down to Cadet and Murphy and who is hotter in training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Murphy has receiving ability and could vie for the role CJ Spiller has been lackluster in so far in New Orleans. Lasco is a SPARQ freak who has top-end athleticism, but an injury-marred 2015 caused him to drop in the draft. Cadet has the most experience in the offense and could be the most productive in a receiving role. It looks like Tim Hightower will be the handcuff to Mark Ingram no matter who wins this fourth running back spot.

Saints | Garrett Grayson needs to show progress    Wed Jun 22, 11:38 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Garrett Grayson will have to earn the No. 3 job and show some real progress to keep him roster spot. He will be slotted behind QBs Drew Brees and Luke McCown. Since the team invested a third-round pick on Grayson last year as a developmental project, he is likely to stick around.

Saints | Dannell Ellerbe will be ready for camp    Sun Jun 19, 05:32 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe (undisclosed) missed some practices this offseason because of undisclosed injuries but expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Over the last two seasons, Ellerbe has only played in seven games. During 2015 (his first year with the Saints), Ellerbe was limited by hip and toe injuries. He was forced to take a paycut earlier this offseason, but he could make an impact for the Saints this year if healthy.

Saints | Drew Brees likes Coby Fleener    Sat Jun 18, 03:47 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener has an uncanny ability to separate and get open, according to QB Drew Brees. 'There's always a place to throw the ball where he can get it,' Brees said. Fleener was targeted eight times during 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 drills this week -- the same number of targets as WRs Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should love Fleener if he can stay healthy and play up to his potential. With Ben Watson moving on to the Ravens in free agency, the Saints went out to add Fleener. Brees loves to involve the TE in the passing game, and this makes Fleener a low-end TE1 with upside in 2016. His current ADP is TE7 (7.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | New Orleans makes two roster moves    Sat Jun 18, 01:57 PM

Saints | Michael Thomas impressive during workouts    Fri Jun 17, 04:35 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas made several impressive catches during offseason workouts and was willing to talk with QB Drew Brees after plays in order to learn things.

Footballguys view: Thomas is big, fast and physical. The second-round pick from Ohio State has natural hands and does a good job of winning at the point of the catch. Thomas could beat out Brandon Coleman for the team's WR3 job behind Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Saints | New Orleans backfield taking shape    Thu Jun 16, 07:45 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is the lead running back for the Saints, while RB Tim Hightower appears to be the backup, according to Larry Holder of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. RB C.J. Spiller holds the No. 3 spot.

Footballguys view: Ingram has come into his own, and we think he's a borderline RB1/RB2 and we could see him tipping 1,000 yards this year. Hightower finally got back into the league after some knee issues, but will be limited to whatever Ingram doesn't pick up. That means Hightower is unlikely to have any value save as a handcuff. Spiller might be the third back but he's going to have more work than Hightower, since he brings a little more variety to the table. Consider him only as depth though, as we don't expect him to do enough to warrant more than a bye-week fill-in, and his value is around RB7.

Saints | Coach talks C.J. Spiller    Mon Jun 13, 05:58 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's 'health and movement skills' were noticeably different, and he was a pleasant surprise during organized team activities, head coach Sean Payton said.

Footballguys view: Another day and more positive Spiller news. He's an interesting option to consider late in your PPR-league drafts. Spiller had a disappointing season in 2015, but on paper he makes for a great fit in the Saints high-powered offense.

Saints | C.J. Spiller believes he fits offense    Sun Jun 12, 07:11 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller said his skill set is built for the Saints' offense, and he believes he can flourish now that he is 100% healthy.

Footballguys view: On paper...or on Madden Ultimate Team...Spiller IS a great fit for the Saints offense. Last year was a terrible season for Spiller as he had only one game with more than 4 carries and only one game with more than 5 targets. Spiller said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Now healthy, we'll see if he can have a bounce-back season and be the weapon the Saints were hoping for when they signed him in free agency.

Saints | Surgery hindered C.J. Spiller    Sat Jun 11, 02:15 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Spiller said he wasn't able to cut and stop like he normally would and he lacked the explosion that he's known for. Spiller said last season is behind him now and that the road to recovery is looking bright.

Footballguys view: Spiller is an interesting player to take a flier on later in your drafts. The Saints offense is going to be a high-powered unit, and Spiller can make plays as an explosive runner in space or receiver out of the backfield. His current ADP of RB57 (13.07) in 12-team PPR leagues makes him an intriguing player to pick up and stash.

Saints | Brees impressed with Michael Thomas    Fri Jun 3, 11:13 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has shown serious potential in the offense during organized team activities in the last two weeks. 'His improvement over these six practices has been awesome,' QB Drew Brees said. 'From day one until now, the same mistakes are not being made. He's on to the next set of challenges, and he's continuing to progress well.' What impressed Brees the most was Thomas' awareness to change his route on a third-down play when Brees gave the receiver a visual cue to do so. Thomas has primarily played the X-receiver position, which is typically aligned opposite the tight end with his feet at the line of scrimmage. The Saints selected Thomas with a desire to use him mainly as a receiving option in the red zone at 6-3.

Footballguys view: Message! Fantasy owners need to take note here. Thomas was a second-round pick for the Saints in the 2016 NFL draft, and he's got the upside to be a quality starter on the outside. He's a big player who can be physical at the point of the catch. Thomas is not a good route-runner, but his natural athleticism and great hands could push him past Brandon Coleman on the depth chart during his rookie season.

Saints | Michael Thomas to fill big role?    Thu Jun 2, 09:30 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas is going to be asked to take on many of the responsibilities of free-agent WR Marques Colston.

Footballguys view: Thomas certainly has a good size/speed combination like Colston used to. The second-round pick from Ohio State wins at the point of the catch regularly and he has great hands. Don't ask him to run a crisp route, but he could move into a WR3 job for the Saints behind Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Saints | Brandin Cooks still not practicing    Thu Jun 2, 07:53 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks (undisclosed) worked off to the side with trainers during practice Thursday, June 2.

Footballguys view: We're not worried until camp. We see Cooks as a solid WR2 in this offense this year, and think the addition of rookie Michael Thomas along with the return of Willie Snead is going to help clear some traffic around Cooks as well.

Saints | Drew Brees remains focused    Mon May 30, 04:34 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has remained focus this offseason despite a potential future contract extension. Brees is able to keep his focus with whatever situation he is in, according to head coach Sean Payton. As was reported earlier, Brees and his representatives will not negotiate a contract during the 2016 season.

Footballguys view: Of course Brees is going to stay focused. He's got a $30 million cap hit at this time as he enters the final year of his deal. The Saints could extend Brees to keep him so that he retires a member of the team, but more importantly they could lower his cap hit for 2016.

Saints | Big step coming for Willie Snead?    Mon May 30, 04:22 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead could take a big step forward this season with his experience and comfort level in the offense, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said Snead has great attention to detail, he trains well, he's smart and he has a good knack for finding holes in zone coverage.

Footballguys view: Snead emerged as a favorite target of Brees last year when he snared 69 catches for 984 yards and 3 TDs. We could see him produce at a similar clip this year. We see Snead as a low-end WR3 with upside and a player to consider as a flex in certain matchups.

Saints | Michael Thomas impressing    Mon May 30, 04:10 PM

New Orleans Saints rookie WR Michael Thomas has impressed head coach Sean Payton with his hands so far this offseason.

Footballguys view: He's raw as a route-runner, but the second-round pick from Ohio State has a great size/speed/athleticism combination. Thomas does a good job of winning at the point of the catch with his arms naturally extended away from his body.

Saints | Coby Fleener could help in red zone    Mon May 30, 03:58 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener will be used as a receiver first and will hopefully help in third-down and red-zone situations, according to head coach Sean Payton, much like the way Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham was used when he played for the Saints.

Footballguys view: We're excited about Fleener this year with the Saints. Ben Watson finished as the 7th-best fantasy TE last year, but now he's moved on to the Ravens in free agency and Fleener comes over from the Colts to take his spot. The potential has always been there with Fleener, and this season we may see him play up to that potential. His current ADP is TE9 (8.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Michael Thomas practices with first team    Thu May 26, 08:00 PM

New Orleans Saints rookie WR Michael Thomas practiced with the first-team offense during organized team activities Thursday, May 26, with WR Brandin Cooks (undisclosed) missing practice.

Footballguys view: The Saints want to get their young rookie some snaps with Brandin Cooks out. It does tell you that perhaps Brandon Coleman might see less play this year and that's worth keeping an eye on. We do think Willie Snead will stay with Cooks back and healthy, bit Thomas could have some decent WR4 value with upside.

Saints | C.J. Spiller looks better     Thu May 26, 07:38 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's (knee) health and movement skills are noticeably different so far this offseason, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'He worked his butt off in the offseason to get the strength back in that leg he [injured],' Payton said. 'That's been real encouraging.'

Footballguys view: Spiller has upside but at 29 and beat up, it's not a lot. He's well behind everyone else there and we don't see him as worth a roster spot.

Saints | Jairus Byrd on the sidelines    Thu May 26, 01:46 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) was out of practice Thursday, May 26, and working on the side with trainers.

Footballguys view: Things were supposed to be different for Byrd when he signed with the Saints. Instead, this knee injury has slowed him down. He is rehabbing the same knee that has bothered him the last two years and should be ready for training camp.

Saints | Brandin Cooks out of practice    Thu May 26, 01:46 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks (undisclosed) is out of practice Thursday, May 26, and working on the side with trainers.

Footballguys view: We're not worried about this, though we never love to see a player on the sidelines...even in OTAs. Cooks looks poised to put up WR2 numbers this year and have his second straight 1,000-yard season.

Saints | Drew Brees won't negotiate in season    Thu May 26, 12:28 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees, who said he hasn't had contract extension talks in two months, will not negotiate a new contract during the 2016 season. He doesn't plan to miss any offseason activities, whether a deal gets done or not.

Footballguys view: Brees is looking for one more payday, as he's definitely towards the end of his career. We think he has a very good 2016, and we're glad he'll be in camp regardless of the contract issue.

Link to story
Drew Brees player page

Saints | Drew Brees will report for workouts    Mon May 23, 08:07 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he will be on the field for organized team activities Tuesday, May 24, even though the two sides have not be able to reach an agreement on a contract extension.

Footballguys view: Brees is in the final year of his current deal, and he has a cap hit of $30 million in 2016. There's $20.8 million left in dead money on his deal, but the Saints may want to extend him to lower the total hit for this season. There's no reason for Brees to skip OTAs, so we're not shocked he's going to be at the facility.

Saints | Waive Chris Highland    Mon May 23, 05:35 PM

New Orleans Saints LS Chris Highland was waived Monday, May 23.

Saints | Vincent Brown signing with Saints    Mon May 23, 01:06 PM

Free-agent WR Vincent Brown (Chargers) is signing an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Monday, May 23, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Brown's career has been knocked off by injury. He's still a great route-runner with good hands, but he lacks burst and explosiveness after battling with injuries as a pro.

Saints | Cameron Jordan awaiting clearance    Sun May 22, 10:28 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan (back) recently got back into shape following arthroscopic back surgery, but he is still awaiting full clearance to take part in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The surgery was considered minor, and Jordan reportedly played through this injury late last season and in the Pro Bowl. After having 10 sacks last year, the Saints want to see what Jordan can do for an encore. We imagine he'll be limited (or out) of OTAs and minicamp with a target of returning at full strength for training camp later this summer.

Free-agent WR Nathan Palmer (Bears) is working out for the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, May 18.

Free-agent WR Denarius Moore (Bills) and WR Vincent Brown (Chargers) are working out for the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, May 18.

Saints | Hakeem Nicks working out for Saints    Wed May 18, 01:26 PM

Free-agent WR Hakeem Nicks (Giants) is among the group of receivers working out for the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Nicks is a long was from the salad days he had with the New York Giants, and his impact in Indianapolis in 2014 as well as last season briefly with the Giants, was minimal. Don't expect it to be different this year with the Saints, if he lasts on the roster.

New Orleans Saints QB Griffin Neal and WR Shane Wynn were placed on no-recall waivers Monday, May 16.

Footballguys view: The uber-football nerd in us was excited about the German Football League prospect, QB Griffin Neal. He didn't last long as a camp arm for the Saints. Looks like Garrett Grayson is safe as the team's QB3 behind Drew Brees and Luke McCown.

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas' rookie deal is worth $5.118 million with $3.055 million guaranteed and a $1.922 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: While he will compete with the likes of Willie Snead, Thomas' ball skills make him a potential player in PPR leagues this coming season, though as no more than a WR3 or WR4 until we see how big his role becomes.

Saints | Vonn Bell signs    Tue May 10, 07:43 PM

New Orleans Saints SS Vonn Bell signed his four-year rookie contract Tuesday, May 10. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Bell is your classic "in the box" safety who arrives at the play with natural violence. Over the last two years, Bell was credited with 23 passes defensed. He's not great in deep coverage, but he's got good click-and-close ability on routes/plays that unfold in front of him.
