Saints | Brian Dixon goes to NFI list    Tue Jul 28, 05:48 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Brian Dixon (undisclosed) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, July 28.

Saints | Brodrick Bunkley released    Tue Jul 28, 05:36 PM

New Orleans Saints DT Brodrick Bunkley (undisclosed) was released with a failed physical designation Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Bunkley tore his quad late last year, and he's still recovering from that injury. Once healthy, the 31-year old run-stuffer should get some interest.

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) and DT Glenn Foster (undisclosed) were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, July 28.

Saints | Marques Colston placed on PUP list    Tue Jul 28, 05:19 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (undisclosed) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: The Saints are just wisely being cautious with their veteran wide receiver. Many expected his training camp reps to be limited and monitored closely as there's no need to overwork such a seasoned player in camp.

Saints | Junior Galette officially released    Mon Jul 27, 05:25 PM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette was officially released Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Galette was reportedly part of the chemistry problems the Saints had on defense last year. He led the team in sacks last year, but the off-field incidents proved to be the last straw. Galette suffered a severe pectoral injury at minicamp, and his status for Week 1 is unknown.

Saints | Add Kevin Brock    Mon Jul 27, 04:59 PM

Free-agent TE Kevin Brock (Bengals) signed with the New Orleans Saints Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: The Saints were interested in another former Bengals tight end, Jermain Gresham, so the addition of Brock is not a surprise. Brock is mostly a blocking tight end, but he can also contribute on special teams. He's not much of a threat to the fantasy value of guys like Ben Watson or Josh Hill.

Saints | Benjamin Watson to start?    Fri Jul 24, 06:15 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Benjamin Watson is slated to start at tight end over TE Josh Hill, according to Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Watson is a good all-around tight end, but he's not much of an option for fantasy owners. Hill can make some plays here and there in a part-time role.

Saints | Junior Galette released    Fri Jul 24, 02:23 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette was released Friday, July 24, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Galette's off-field incidents proved to be too much for Sean Payton. He suffered a pectoral incident earlier this year in minicamp, and his status for Week 1 is in question. The Saints will turn to Anthony Spencer with Galette now bounced off the team.

Saints | Lofty expectations for C.J. Spiller    Thu Jul 23, 05:47 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller could catch around 60 passes this year, in the opinion of Mike Triplett of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: That's not lofty compared to some projections that have Spiller hauling in 80 or more passes. There's a good chance that Spiller ends up with more all-purpose yards than Mark Ingram, even though Ingram could be considered the lead back. In 12-team PPR leagues, Spiller is going off the board at RB15 (3.11).

Saints | Marcus Murphy placed on NFI list    Wed Jul 22, 06:09 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Marcus Murphy (undisclosed) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 22.

Footballguys view: Murphy is a smaller return specialist/receiving back in the mold of Darren Sproles. If he can make the practice squad, he might be poised to benefit from any CJ Spiller injuries this year.

Saints | Marques Colston could be used in red zone    Mon Jul 20, 08:48 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston could be used as a red zone target more than in recent years, and he should remain heavily involved in the offense.

Footballguys view: Well Colston has never been a guy to stretch the field, so using him in the red zone (where he can use his size and strength) is the best idea. With guys like Kenny Stills (Dolphins) and Jimmy Graham (Seahawks) gone, Colston might see an uptick in red-zone targets in 2015. He's a WR4 for most fantasy owners this year.

Saints | New Orleans TE committee likely    Mon Jul 20, 08:47 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill and TE Benjamin Watson will likely be used in a committee to supplement the team's offense after TE Jimmy Graham was traded.

Footballguys view: No matter who is the starter, they won't see as many targets as Jimmy Graham did during his time in New Orleans. We have an appreciation for the Idaho State product, and Hill has proven in limited time that he can make some big plays (and catch touchdowns) here and there. Hill should get every opportunity to prove himself in a larger role this year, but TEBC isn't something fantasy owners should be getting themselves involved in. Let's see how things shake out in training camp and the preseason.

Saints | Jermaine Gresham has offer from NO    Sun Jul 19, 06:15 PM

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) was offered a contract by the New Orleans Saints after visiting in June. He has other visits planned over the next two weeks and is expected to decide on a team before training camp begins.

Footballguys view: We'll see if the veteran tight end accepts. The Saints have always seemed like the frontrunner for Gresham's services. If signed, this would lower the value (and the sleeper status) of Josh Hill. Stay tuned.

Saints | Josh Morgan on roster bubble    Sun Jul 19, 10:02 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Josh Morgan will have a chance to compete for a roster spot during training camp after he performed well during offseason workouts. Morgan will have to be one of the team's top four receivers if he wants a chance to make the roster.

Footballguys view: Josh Morgan has always been a player who has failed to play up to his natural potential. At this point in his pro career, Morgan is an underachieving talent who even dynasty league owners should not be dialed into. The Saints are his fourth (and perhaps final) stop in the NFL since he came out of Virginia Tech as a sixth-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in the 2008 NFL draft.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has run well vs. NFC    Sat Jul 11, 02:54 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has averaged 5.56 yards per carry against NFC teams over his five-year career. Spiller and the Saints will face NFC teams 12 times in the 2015 regular season.

Footballguys view: Spiller is going to get more touches in space and as a receiver than he got in Buffalo, so we're back to high expectations for the back who was a top 5 fantasy play as recently as 2012. His ADP has been constantly rising since the Saints signed him, and it might take a third round pick to be sure that you get him in PPR leagues.

Saints | Nick Toon will play Z receiver    Wed Jul 8, 03:16 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Nick Toon will primarily play off the line of scrimmage, or in the Z position, for the Saints in 2015. Toon will also line up on the strong side of the formation. In his first three seasons, Toon had played as the X receiver.

Saints | C.J. Spiller has done well on turf    Tue Jul 7, 07:43 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has averaged 5.02 yards and 7.66 yards on 501 career attempts and 109 career receptions, respectively, when playing on turf -- the surface he'll be playing on in New Orleans.

Footballguys view: Spiller also has four road games indoors on turf. If he stays healthy and gets the full Darren Sproles role in the offense, he could put up low RB1 numbers and still be a value in the third round.

C.J. Spiller player page

Saints | Nick Toon to see a lot more snaps    Tue Jul 7, 03:29 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Nick Toon's snap count will go way up this season, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said Toon has been working hard, he understands the system and he has shown progress.

Footballguys view: Toon is competing with Seantavius Jones, Brandon Coleman, Joseph Morgan, and Josh Morgan for a #3 wide receiver job that won't be relevant for fantasy leagues without an injury to one of the top two WRs on the Saints, Brandin Cooks and Marques Colston. The third year player from Wisconsin was unimpressive in extended time last year, so progress would be needed before we would even monitor Toon closely in dynasty leagues.

Saints | Khiry Robinson ready for opportunity    Fri Jul 3, 06:09 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Khiry Robinson is ready to take what he can get after an arm injury cut his 2014 campaign short. 'I'm the type of person, I'm gonna get what I get and do what I do with it,' Robinson said. 'So whether it's 20 carries or one carry, I'm gonna [perform to] the best of my ability every play.' Robinson is remaining confident after the Saints spent big money to re-sign RB Mark Ingram and acquire RB C.J. Spiller.

Footballguys view: Robinson didn't look that far off of Mark Ingram in terms of talent and effectiveness at the beginning of last year, but Ingram pulled away when Robinson was out. If Ingram or oft-injured CJ Spiller miss time this year, Robinson will merit a look in fantasy leagues. Keep him on waiver wire speed dial.

Saints | Josh Morgan has had good offseason    Thu Jul 2, 06:24 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Josh Morgan battled TE Benjamin Watson for most catches in practices this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Saints have two wide receivers set on the depth chart in Brandin Cooks and Marques Colston, but the rest of the depth chart is unsettled. Nick Toon is the returning #3 receiver, but he wasn't an impact player in his time on the field in 2014, which opens the door for Morgan, 2014 practice squad WRs Seantavius Jones and Brandon Coleman, and deep threat Joseph Morgan to seize a larger role in the offense. The #3 WR role probably won't be fantasy relevant, but the quality of the player could affect the value of Colston and tight end Josh Hill.

Saints | C.J. Spiller a good fit in New Orleans?    Sun Jun 28, 08:52 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has a perfect skill-set for head coach Sean Payton's system, which relies on getting the ball to players in space, according Chris Wesseling of NFL.com. Wesseling believes Spiller is significantly more talented than RB Reggie Bush and RB Darren Sproles, who both thrived in Payton's system.

Footballguys view: Spiller is going to be a great fit for the Saints offense. Sure, Mark Ingram will be the banger between the tackles but Spiller will be used effectively as a change-of-pace runner and receiver out of the backfield. There are Saints beat writers who feel that Spiller will get more total yardage than Ingram. His current ADP is RB16 (3.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | No major breakthrough for Josh Hill?    Mon Jun 22, 12:01 PM

Mike Triplett, from ESPN.com, believes there is no "major breakthrough" coming for tight end Josh Hill in 2015. The team traded away Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks earlier this year, but his role could be split behind Hill and veteran Ben Watson.

Footballguys view: There's a lot of fantasy owners out there who like Hill as a sleeper because of the five touchdowns he snared in a part-time role last year. He led the nation in receptions for tight ends during his final year in college at Idaho State, and Hill is more talented as a receiver than some think. Right now, fantasy owners are expecting him to be a low-end TE1. His current ADP is TE10 (9.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | RBs Spiller/Ingram very close in yards?    Sun Jun 21, 08:40 PM

Mike Triplett, from ESPN.com, believes that running backs C.J. Spiller and Mark Ingram could both be close in yards from scrimmage this year. Ingram would pick up his yards mostly as a runner while Spiller would get his yardage as both a runner and receiver out of the backfield.

Footballguys view: The more and more we read reports out of New Orleans, the more it becomes clear that Spiller is going to be more than a change-of-pace back for the Saints. If he caught 75 passes this year, we wouldn't be surprised. Spiller's going off the board at RB17 (4.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | HC excited to use C.J. Spiller    Fri Jun 19, 04:37 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller will have plays designed specifically for him in head coach Sean Payton's offense.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should be excited about Spiller's potential as well. Payton said he's anxious to see how Spiller fits into the offense with his speed and good hands. Spiller is RB17 (4.03) in 12-team PPR drafts right now.

Saints | Two Saints sitting out    Thu Jun 18, 12:10 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) and SS Kenny Vaccaro are sitting out of practice Thursday, June 18.

Footballguys view: At the end of minicamp, this is no real worry. Byrd struggled in 2014 before tearing his lateral meniscus, but he should be ready to go for camp. The Saints need him to play better though, considering how much they paid to acquire him last offseason.

Saints | Kevin Williams inks deal with Saints    Thu Jun 18, 09:38 AM

Free-agent DT Kevin Williams (Vikings) signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the New Orleans Saints Thursday, June 18. He received a $500,000 signing bonus, which is his only guarantee in the deal. He has another $1.6 million in playing time incentives.

Footballguys view: The Saints continue to add to the defense in the hopes that it continues to improve from last season. Williams adds some help in run-stopping but is aging and no more than a rotational player.

Saints | Brandon Browner exits    Wed Jun 17, 02:25 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner (undisclosed) walked off the field with trainers Wednesday, June 17. It's unknown if he's cramping or injured.

Footballguys view: Stay tuned here. The Saints have re-worked their defense this offseason, and Browner brings a veteran presence to their defensive backfield.

Saints | Matt James tries out    Wed Jun 17, 07:33 AM

Free-agent WR Matt James (Wake Forest) tried out for the New Orleans Saints at the team's minicamp this week.

Footballguys view: Earlier this year, James tried out for the Carolina Panthers but didn't earn a spot on the roster. He's got the size at 6'5" 211 pounds, and James was timed at 4.57 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the Wake Forest pro day. James didn't do much in his college career, finishing with only 48 catches for 458 yards and zero touchdowns. He was constantly banged up over the last three years, and James may not have what it takes to play in the NFL.

Saints | Marques Colston limiting his mileage     Tue Jun 16, 10:50 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston did not participate in minicamp practice Tuesday, June 16, and it was at least the third session he has missed over the past two weeks. 'When you play nine, 10 years in this league at a skill position, mileage is mileage,' Colston said. 'I'm just kind of in a mode where they want to manage that process throughout the year.'

Footballguys view: We've got no problem with this at all. Seasoned veterans usually take time off during minicamp and OTAs, and Colston is no different. This season, the Saints are set to have a more balanced offense. This means the numbers from the passing game might not be as huge as they've been in recent years. Colston is not the same player he used to be (and hasn't had over 1,000 yards receiving in two years), and fantasy owners look at him as a WR48 (10.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Junior Galette avoids surgery    Tue Jun 16, 08:32 AM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) won't require surgery on his pectoral injury after meeting with Dr. James Andrews.

Footballguys view: The Saints need Galette on the field to boost their pass rush. The injury should require rest and rehab. We'll know more when this team gets closer to training camp.

Saints | Harold Spears waived    Fri Jun 12, 05:16 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Harold Spears was waived Friday, June 12.

Footballguys view: The former high school basketball player was a standout in college at New Hampshire. Over the last two seasons, Spears compiled 90 catches for 1,316 yards and 8 touchdowns. The Saints nabbed him as an undrafted free agent this year, but he did receive a bit of interest from the Broncos before the draft. We'll see if someone signs him as a developmental player.

Saints | Brandon Browner sits out    Wed Jun 10, 02:20 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner (undisclosed) did not participate in organized team activities Wednesday, June 10, because of an apparent injury.

Footballguys view: We'll see if something more is revealed here....stay tuned.

Saints | Mark Ingram returns to practice    Wed Jun 10, 01:19 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram (ankle, foot) participated in organized team activities Wednesday, June 10.

Footballguys view: There always seems to be SOMETHING with Ingram. We like his determination, but injury concerns (even minor ones) have plagued him during his entire pro career. Ingram will be the hammer of the Saints RBBC with free-agent addition C.J. Spiller working as the change-of-pace back.

Saints | Brandin Cooks wants to play faster    Mon Jun 8, 03:36 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks expects to play at a faster pace in his second season in the NFL. Cooks said he's ahead of where he was last offseason from a mental standpoint and feels that he has unfinished business following a shortened rookie season due to a broken thumb.

Footballguys view: Cooks can be a stud for the Saints passing game. The team will be looking to replace the targets lost with Jimmy Graham (Seahawks) traded away. Cooks could be part of that answer. He's super quick and elusive after the catch. Look for him to work shorter routes in order to turn them into long gains. His current ADP is WR15 (3.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Junior Galette seeking another opinion    Fri Jun 5, 12:30 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) is likely to have a decision on surgery in the next week or so. Doctors are split on whether he should have surgery, and he's seeking another opinion.

Footballguys view: The reports out of New Orleans seem to indicate we could be a "week or so" away from a decision. If he needs surgery, Galette will miss a significant amount of the season.

Saints | Mark Ingram sidelined    Fri Jun 5, 09:37 AM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram (foot, ankle) was out of practice Thursday, June 4, but head coach Sean Payton said it wasn't due to anything significant. Ingram was out last Thursday due to what Payton described as a minor foot/ankle issue. It's unclear if he has missed the entirety of the last two weeks because one practice session per week is open to the media.

Footballguys view: Ingram being banged up is nothing new, but it is frustrating. If healthy, the Saints will use him as the bellcow back on an offense that should be more balanced this season. He'll be splitting time with free agent addition C.J. Spiller, but Spiller's role will be mainly as a change-of-pace back and receiver out of the backfield. If Ingram struggles with health, then perhaps Spiller could see a larger role with the Saints in 2015.

Saints | Junior Galette could be out a while    Thu Jun 4, 06:59 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Junior Galette (pectoral) recently suffered an injury to his pectoral and is supposedly considering surgery, according to sources. The cause and extent of Galette's injury is unknown at this time.

Footballguys view: Any sort of surgery on the pectoral muscle could cost Galette six months for recovery. It would be a crushing blow for the Saints defense as Galette led the team with 10 sacks in 2014. Starting the season on the PUP list (forcing him to miss the first six weeks) may be the plan for Galette.

Saints | Jermaine Gresham good fit to Saints' HC    Thu Jun 4, 05:54 PM

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) would make a good fit in the Saints' offense, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said he thought Gresham's visit with New Orleans went well Wednesday, June 3.

Footballguys view: The Saints are likely updating an emergency list, and there's no rush to sign Gresham right now. He's gotten little interest on the open market this offseason. Gresham (back) is recovering from offseason surgery on a herniated disc. If added, we'd likely see Gresham compete with Ben Watson for the blocking TE duties.

Saints | Jermaine Gresham visited NO    Wed Jun 3, 08:30 PM

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham visited the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, June 3, according to sources. No deal is done yet.

Footballguys view: An interesting visit here. Gresham has received little interest as teams wait for him to recover from back surgery he had earlier this year. The Saints could use some tight end depth with Jimmy Graham now playing for the Seahawks. If added, Gresham would compete with Ben Watson for in-line duties. Intriguing prospect Josh Hill should be the team's move tight end in 2015.

Saints | Jairus Byrd getting close to return    Wed Jun 3, 07:11 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) is in good shape and working to get through his knee injury, according to head coach Sean Payton, Wednesday, June 3. Byrd still needs to do some maintenance on his knee, but he is nearing a return to organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The Saints added Byrd in free agency last year, paid him a ton of money (six-year, $54 million), and had high hopes for his future with the team. Byrd then suffered through one of the worst seasons he could possibly have, including this knee injury. We've see a steady decline in production since his best season 2011, and Byrd is a risky add for fantasy owners in IDP leagues.

Saints | Nick Toon favorite for No. 3 WR    Wed Jun 3, 06:32 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Nick Toon seems to be the frontrunner to be the Saints' No. 3 wide receiver, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett. Triplett said Joe Morgan and Josh Morgan are also in the mix for the position.

Footballguys view: We've been waiting and waiting for guys like Toon--and both Morgans--to actually start playing up to their potential. This is a positive sign for Toon, but let's just say we're a little hesitant about getting excited given his disappointing career to this point.

Saints | Brandin Cooks to have big year?    Wed Jun 3, 06:12 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks is primed for a breakout year, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett. Triplett believes Cooks can attain 100 catches or 1,000 yards with TE Jimmy Graham and WR Kenny Stills now out of the picture.

Footballguys view: Cooks is the guy to watch out for here in the Saints passing game without Jimmy Graham. He'll be able to take a lot of short catches and turn them into long gains because of his quickness, fearlessness and run-after-the-catch ability. His current ADP is WR15 (3.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | C.J. Spiller could see most touches    Wed Jun 3, 09:20 AM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller could lead the team in touches over RB Mark Ingram, in the opinion of beat writer Nick Underhill.

Footballguys view: Spiller is a better receiver out of the backfield, and those receptions could help put him over the top. Ingram will be the banger between the tackles, but Spiller (when used properly) can be incredibly dangerous in space. There's a chance he could catch 50 or more passes this year, and Spiller should get over 100 carries as the Saints focus on running the ball in 2015. Current ADP has Ingram going off the board at RB13 (3.07) and Spiller at RB22 (4.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Tim Lelito has chance to start    Sat May 23, 01:33 PM

New Orleans Saints OG Tim Lelito will have an opportunity to start at left guard in 2015. Lelito has had a few starts at right guard and center, but played at left guard in college.

Footballguys view: Lelito started two games last year, but he mostly played as a backup center for the Saints last year. With OG Ben Grubbs traded to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year, Lelito is the likely choice to replace him. A 2013 undrafted free agent out of Grand Valley State, Lelito has years of experience at guard.

Saints | Drew Brees wants long career    Fri May 22, 02:15 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he may not be able to play until he is 45 years old like he previously stated but wants to play as long as he can.

Footballguys view: Try not to spit out your coffee when you read "45" in this story. We could see Brees playing until he's around 40, but anything after that is a bit shaky. He's not quite the same player he used to be, and fantasy owners need to realize the changes on the offense for the 2015 season. This team could run more and pass less, making Brees a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners.

Saints | Andy Tanner placed on IR    Fri May 22, 02:24 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Andy Tanner cleared waivers and was placed on injured reserve Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Undrafted in 2010, Tanner spent last season on Injured Reserve with an injury he suffered in training camp. He's been a practice squad player for the Saints, but Tanner has not yet played a game in the regular season. This latest injury could spell the end of his pro career.

Saints | Andrus Peat signs rookie deal    Thu May 21, 03:15 PM

New Orleans Saints OT Andrus Peat signed his rookie contract with the team, according to sources. Peat has a four-year deal worth $11.39 million with a signing bonus of $6.546 million included.

Footballguys view: This can only help Drew Brees avoid being hammered this season. Ultimately, it appears that the Saints are aiming to be more run-friendly, and Peat would also be a huge addition towards that end.

New Orleans Saints WR Andy Tanner was waived to make room for the addition of free-agent OG Mike McGlynn (Chiefs) Wednesday, May 20.

Saints | Drew Brees discusses his future    Thu May 21, 10:25 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is entering his age-36 season and said playing until he is 45 years old might be 'overzealous.' Brees noted that '45 is a long way away.' He added, 'At different stages in your career, I just think you kind of reassess and reevaluate and try to set goals moving forward. It was just kind of one of those moments last year where my body felt great, felt like I had a great system in place with my training and my recovery and my diet and everything, gosh, why not?'

Footballguys view: The off-season moves the New Orleans Saints made point towards a shift in philosophy. It appears as if they will run the ball more and focus less on throwing as much as they did in the past. That might help Brees stick around for a longer career, but could cut down on his passing numbers. Brees' ADP is still as a top five quarterback (around the fifth round) but losing Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills while it's obvious the run game is getting beefed up is a concern.
