Saints | Calvin Pryor visiting    Mon Apr 14, 02:51 PM

The New Orleans Saints are meeting with Louisville S Calvin Pryor Monday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Pryor can roam the field in coverage, but he can also play close to the line of scrimmage and make a big hit. He's a violent hitter who loves to initiate contact. Pryor would give any team an intimidating presence at the free safety position. He's a lock to be a first-round pick. With Jairus Byrd and Kenny Vaccaro already on the team, the Saints would be a curious fit.

Saints | No update on Jimmy Graham talks    Wed Apr 9, 03:11 PM

Saints | Champ Bailey to stay at CB    Wed Apr 9, 02:13 PM

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said the team will only use CB Champ Bailey at cornerback and will not use him at another position.

Footballguys view: Bailey struggled in 2013 as he dealt with a Lisfranc injury that he suffered in preseason. He's not as washed up as some think. Bailey could work nicely for the Saints as a nickel corner.

Saints | Sean Payton at LSU Pro Day    Wed Apr 9, 02:01 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton is attending the Louisiana State Pro Day Wednesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Saints could be looking to add one of the Bayou Bengal's wide receivers to the roster. Odell Beckham Jr. and Jarvis Landry should both go off the board in the first two rounds of the draft. Beckham is a first-round pick and Landry is likely a second-round pick. Landry is a possession receiver who isn't afraid to run routes over the middle. Beckham is a top threat because of his speed, ball-tracking ability and agility in the open field.

Saints | Meet with Marqise Lee    Tue Apr 8, 02:16 PM

Updating a previous report, the New Orleans Saints met with Southern California WR Marqise Lee Tuesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Lee could be an interesting addition for the Saints in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. He's a crisp route-runner who sees the field well after the catch. However, Lee has a bad habit of body-catching too many passes. This means he doesn't catch them cleanly and it will lead to some bad drops from time to time. He's also not a burner in the open field. Lee is a safe, possession receiver for any team interested.

Saints | Will meet with Marqise Lee    Fri Apr 4, 07:56 PM

Southern California WR Marqise Lee said he is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints before the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Saints could use more talent at the wide receiver position. Lee is likely going to be a second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft. He is a crisp route-runner who can make contested catches. Lee has the body control to work the sideline as well. However, he does have problems letting too many passes into his body. This leads to passes that aren't caught cleanly and also a few drops.

Saints | Champ Bailey to compete for starting job    Fri Apr 4, 04:09 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Champ Bailey will compete for a starting job this year opposite CB Keenan Lewis. Bailey will battle it out with CBs Corey White and Patrick Robinson. Bailey could also play a hybrid cornerback-safety role in nickel and dime packages.

Footballguys view: Bailey struggled in 2013 with the Broncos, but that was largely due to a Lisfranc injury he suffered in training camp. If healthy, Bailey should be a quality reserve corner at least.

Saints | Agree to terms with Champ Bailey    Fri Apr 4, 03:24 PM

The New Orleans Saints agreed to terms with CB Champ Bailey (Broncos) on a two-year deal Friday, April 4. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bailey gives the Saints veteran depth at the corner position. He's not yet ready to switch to free safety, and Bailey can still contribute as a nickel corner. Bailey is one of the best tacklers to ever play cornerback in the NFL. His 2013 season was disappointing as he tried to play through a Lisfranc injury he suffered in the preseason.

The New Orleans Saints are not the one of the teams that are pursuing free-agent WR DeSean Jackson (Eagles).

Saints | Expect Marques Colston's foot issues to linger    Wed Mar 26, 08:36 AM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said the team will monitor WR Marques Colston's (foot) practice time this season.

Footballguys view: Colston looked done for a bit last year, but after some rest, he put up numbers near his historical averages. With Lance Moore and Darren Sproles gone and no new infusion of receiving talent via free agency, Colston will be a smart investment if he falls too far in fantasy drafts this year.

Saints | Bigger role for Travaris Cadet?    Tue Mar 25, 10:04 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said Tuesday, March 25, that RB Travaris Cadet could take on 'a little more of that role' that RB Darren Sproles played in the team's offense over the past three seasons.

Footballguys view: Cadet has speed, but he is not as shifty or natural a passcatcher as Sproles. He has deep sleeper potential, but even if Cadet plays Sproles' role, it will be a much smaller version of that role.

Saints | Owner confident Jimmy Graham deal will be done    Tue Mar 25, 09:44 PM

New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson expressed confidence that his team will be able to re-sign TE Jimmy Graham to a long-term extension this offseason. 'He's a hell of a good player, but he's also a good person,' Benson said Tuesday, March 25. 'I'm confident we'll work out something. We just have a little bit of time to do it, that's all.'

Footballguys view: The Saints strung out the Drew Brees negotiations and they did get ugly, but they got done. The same should happen this offseason for Graham, which will likely include no position designation change for the elite fantasy tight end.

Saints | Drew Brees calls Jimmy Graham a hybrid    Mon Mar 24, 12:58 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees called TE Jimmy Graham a 'hybrid' when asked if he saw Graham as a tight end or a receiver. Graham could file a grievance with the league after he was franchise tagged by the team as a tight end rather than a wide receiver. 'He plays a different position than anybody in the league,' Brees said. 'So he'll be cutting edge with whatever he gets (paid). And everybody will try to compare themselves to him five years from now.'

Footballguys view: Graham lined up mostly as a wide receiver last year. Tight ends are asked to do more than ever as pass-catchers in today's NFL.

Saints | Joe Morgan re-signs    Tue Mar 18, 07:10 PM

The New Orleans Saints re-signed WR Joe Morgan to an undisclosed one-year deal Tuesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: Morgan was set to come on as the #3 receiver in the offense and main deep threat in the Saints offense, before tearing his ACL in training camp last year. They bet that he wouldn't be signed in free agency instead of offering the restricted free agent a second-round tender, and they were correct. He'll be a good sleeper if 2013 fifth-round pick Kenny Stills stumbles.
