New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd's (back) recovery from back surgery has gone as expected. However, it's unknown if he'll be limited at the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Byrd was a fantastic addition to the Saints defense. The team will be cautious with him moving forward so they don't aggravate the injury.

Saints | More on Jimmy Graham contract    Thu Jul 17, 01:38 PM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham agreed to a contract with a $4 million cap hit in 2014, $11 million in 2015, $12 million in 2016 and $13 million in 2017. The deal includes a $2 million roster bonus in 2017.

Footballguys view: Everyone seems okay with this deal that makes Graham the highest paid tight end in league history. It still seems like he's underpaid to us.

Saints | Jimmy Graham worked out this offseason    Wed Jul 16, 12:43 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham said it was hard not to work with his teammates this offseason but did work out in Miami with free-agent LB Jonathan Vilma (Saints). He said he had a similar regime this offseason than what he did during the lockout in 2011, which produced one of his best NFL seasons. 'It was tough being away from the guys,' Graham said. 'The good thing is that the base and group of friends I have here in Miami is still strong. I did the same thing I did during the lockout year. I basically did the same day-to-day routine that I did (in 2011). And after the lockout, I had one of my best seasons I have ever had.'

Footballguys view: Graham is going to get back into football shape rather quickly during training camp. He knows the offense like the back of his hand and is cemented as the number one tight end in fantasy football.

Saints | Jimmy Graham the highest-paid TE    Tue Jul 15, 09:52 AM

Saints | Confirm Jimmy Graham deal    Tue Jul 15, 09:32 AM

Updating an earlier report, the New Orleans Saints have confirmed they've reached a multi-year agreement with TE Jimmy Graham.

Footballguys view: Great news for both sides here. Graham gets a four-year, $40 million deal with $21 million guaranteed. This makes him the highest paid tight end in the NFL. He is worth every penny, and the Saints offense (despite their claims otherwise during arbitration) wouldn't be the same without him. With a new deal in place, Graham is locked in as the top tight end in your fantasy draft. His current ADP is TE1 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Jimmy Graham appears to have deal in place    Tue Jul 15, 09:13 AM

Saints | Getting closer to deal with Jimmy Graham    Mon Jul 14, 05:12 PM

The New Orleans Saints are close to a long-term deal with franchise free-agent TE Jimmy Graham that would make Graham the highest-paid tight end in NFL history.

Footballguys view: The Saints could show some good will for Graham by getting him a new deal. He should make around $10 million annually, and Graham is worth every penny. The team is optimistic that a deal will get done by the July 15 deadline.

Saints | Jimmy Graham appeals grievance ruling    Mon Jul 14, 04:43 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham has decided to appeal the ruling of his grievance in regards to whether he should be franchised as a tight end or wide receiver, according to a source. The arbitrator ruled that Graham should receive the tight end franchise tag.

Footballguys view: It's wise for Graham's camp to do this. They'll appeal the decision, but they'll still work to find a new deal with the Saints before the deadline on Tuesday.

Saints | Jimmy Graham deadline looming    Mon Jul 14, 12:38 PM

Updating an ongoing story, New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham has a deadline of Tuesday, July 15, at 4 p.m. EDT, to sign a long-term contract extension with the organization.

Footballguys view: It would be in the Saints best interest to find a way to get a long-term deal done with Graham. They won the arbitration against Graham, so he's not going to get wide receiver money as a franchise player. If Graham plays on his one-year deal he'll make around $7 million. There's a chance he could hold out if he's not happy with his contract situation, but there's no chance of getting a new deal until next offseason if something doesn't get done by the 15th.

Saints | Kenny Stills excelled in yards per catch    Wed Jul 9, 11:23 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Kenny Stills' 20.0 yards-per-catch average led all NFL players that recorded at least 30 receptions last season.

Footballguys view: Stills' sleeper train has hit a Brandin Cooks speed bump, but his role and game should still grow in year 2 in one of the best pass offenses in the league. Don't overlook him as one of your top bench receivers, especially if your league has distance TD bonuses.

Saints | Cameron Jordan has high expectations for 2014    Tue Jul 8, 07:36 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan recently said he wants to average one sack per game this season. Jordan also said he wants a Super Bowl win heading into the fourth season of his career.

Footballguys view: Jordan is one of the more anonymous defensive superstars in the NFL. His level of play rivaled 3-4 DE studs like Justin Smith, Calais Campbell and even JJ Watt at times last year. He's a borderline DE1 in IDP leagues.

Saints | Drew Brees hopes for quick resolution to Jimmy Graham's situation    Mon Jul 7, 12:18 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he wants the team to have a quick resolution to TE Jimmy Graham's contract situation so that the two have valuable time together on the field before the season starts. 'Jimmy's my guy,' Brees said in a sit-down interview late last month. 'I want what's best for him. I want what's best for the team. Certainly there's a way that everybody can be happy coming out of this deal. But it is part of the process, and I went through something similar to this two years ago, so I get it.' The Saints have eight days to work out a long-term deal with Graham, and sources expect negotiations to extend up until the deadline on July 15.

Footballguys view: Brees was involved in a similar battle of wills in 2012, and he ended up signing a deal before camp started. We expect the Saints and Graham to find a middle ground in the next week or two. Even if they don't sign a long-term deal, the possibility of a holdout for Graham still seems minimal, although it would be troubling if he did holdout and it lasted well into August.

Saints | Have not reduced offer to Jimmy Graham    Fri Jul 4, 03:13 PM

The New Orleans Saints have not reduced their offer to TE Jimmy Graham after an arbitrator ruled he is a tight end. The team will not use that ruling to change the offer to make Graham the highest paid tight end in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Graham should be the first tight end to ever average an annual salary of $10 million. The Saints placed the franchise tag on Graham this year. That guarantees him a one-year salary around $7 million. If they wanted to, the Saints could slap the franchise tag on him again next season. It remains to be seen how Graham responds to losing the arbitration. It's possible he could hold out for up to the first 10 weeks of the regular season. No need to panic just yet, but know the Saints only have until July 15th to sign Graham to a new long-term deal. After that deadline, he's locked into his franchise money.

Saints | Marques Colston says foot feeling better    Fri Jul 4, 12:17 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston (foot) said he is feeling healthy this season. 'I feel really good,' Colston said. 'The foot I know was addressed earlier in the offseason. It's really not an issue. I've been able to get out here with really no restrictions and just run around and feel good.'

Footballguys view: Good news for Colston and the Saints here. He's a solid player when healthy, but injuries have certainly piled up for the veteran receiver. His numbers suffered last year, and Colston dropped from the 11th-best fantasy WR in 2012 to the 27th-best in 2013. His current ADP reflects that. Colston is getting drafted at WR31 (7.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Jimmy Graham negotiations to start from scratch    Thu Jul 3, 10:14 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham's contract discussions with the team will start at 'ground zero.' Both sides were waiting for the arbitrator's ruling on his franchise tag. There's a possibility that Graham will not sign his tender if there is no contract agreement by the deadline.

Footballguys view: This has the potential to get ugly and if it does and the talks fall apart, Bleacher Report's Mike Freeman has reported that easily no less than six teams will be after the tight end. We expect things to get done, but we're only just getting started. As the current No. 1 TE in fantasy, what happens with Graham is huge.

Saints | Optimistic about deal with Jimmy Graham    Wed Jul 2, 10:35 PM

Saints | Will start negotiations with Jimmy Graham    Wed Jul 2, 10:31 PM

The New Orleans Saints will now begin contract negotiations with the agent franchise free-agent TE Jimmy Graham, because the two sides were waiting on the ruling on Graham's grievance before starting contract talks. There appears to be a chance that Graham will not be interested in his franchise tender if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement before the July 15 deadline and could hold out during training camp and possibly the regular season.

Saints | Coach says Jimmy Graham covered like TE    Wed Jul 2, 03:52 PM

New Orleans head coach Saints Sean Payton said during TE Jimmy Graham's grievance hearing that Graham is covered like a tight end no matter what he lines up on offense. Payton indicated that linebackers cover Graham at times and that linebackers do not cover wide receivers.

Footballguys view: Linebackers don't constantly cover Graham. When the Saints played the Patriots last year it was cornerback Aqib Talib tasked with covering the superstar tight end. The Saints win and Graham loses with this ruling. However, not only does Graham lose. Move tight ends like Jordan Cameron and Julius Thomas are in the final year of their rookie contracts, and they lose in any upcoming negotiations.

Saints | Jimmy Graham ruled a TE    Wed Jul 2, 12:09 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham's grievance hearing has been decided, and he has been officially ruled a tight end.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Saints, but bad news for Graham--or any other move tight end with an upcoming contract negotiation. The franchise price for tight ends is $5 million less than it is for wide receivers. Graham wanted to be labeled as a wide receiver because he spent 67 percent of his snaps lined up wide or in the slot last year. Tight ends have changed in today's NFL. They're no longer the in-line blockers and limited receivers they used to be. Move tight ends like Graham or Julius Thomas are basically super-sized wideouts, and they should be compensated as such. This is a major ruling that will have lasting impact in the NFL.

Saints | Ruling on Jimmy Graham's grievance expected Thursday    Mon Jun 30, 04:14 PM

Arbitrator Stephen Burbank said he expects to inform the New Orleans Saints and franchise free-agent TE Jimmy Graham of his ruling on Graham's grievance on Thursday, July 3.

Footballguys view: This will be an incredibly important ruling--not only for Graham, but for talented move tight ends like Julius Thomas and Jordan Cameron (both entering final year of their rookie contracts). Graham is set to play under a one-year franchise tag worth around $7 million. He wants to be tagged as a wide receiver after playing 67 percent of his snaps out wide or from the slot in 2013. Franchise wide receivers get a one-year salary around $12 million. That difference is significant for a position that has transformed in today's NFL. This ruling is going to set an important precedent for move tight ends in the future.

Saints | Drew Brees knows what Jimmy Graham ruling will be    Sat Jun 28, 10:50 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he knows whether TE Jimmy Graham will be ruled as a tight end or a wide receiver. Brees said he spoke with arbitrator Stephen Burbank, who clued him in on how he will rule. 'He kind of let me know what his ruling is going to be,' Brees said. 'But he swore me to secrecy, so I can't really say at this point.'

Footballguys view: Way to tease us all Drew! We'd like to see this issue resolved--and so would Saints fans. Graham was slapped with the franchise tag earlier this year, and the one-year price tag for TEs is around $7 million. The price tag for a wide receiver slapped with the tag is around $12 million. Graham is one of the "new school" move tight ends who regularly plays wide receiver. He lined up out wide or in the slot on 67 percent of the snaps last year. This is an incredibly important decision for other move tight ends going forward.

Saints | Ruling on Jimmy Graham's grievance expected soon    Fri Jun 27, 07:13 PM

New Orleans Saints franchise free-agent TE Jimmy Graham's grievance against the Saints over what position he should be considered is expected to be ruled on next week, according to a source. The loser of the ruling has the option to appeal the ruling.

Footballguys view: Once Graham's grievance is decided, we will see if a tight end has to play under the franchise tag even though he's lined up mostly as a wide receiver. Graham lined up in the slot or out wide on 67 percent of his snaps in 2013. The Saints could end all this discussion by getting a new deal worked out with their All-Pro tight end. They have until the middle of July to work out any long-term contract. Once Graham's fate is decided, expect the Broncos to make a move to wrap up Julius Thomas.

Saints | Jimmy Graham dispute still unsettled    Thu Jun 26, 12:49 PM

Updating an ongoing story, New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham's grievance case over being franchise tagged as a tight end instead of a wide receiver is yet to be resolved. The arbitrator, Stephen Burbank, concluded two separate rulings this year in less than a week each. NFLPA communications director Carl Francis said a decision shouldn't take much longer. The deadline for a ruling is July 15.

Footballguys view: No matter how long it takes, this shouldn't impact his going to training camp or preseason. Graham is a huge part of this offense whatever position he 'plays' and is our unanimous overall TE1 and many on the staff feel as if he is a borderline top ten fantasy pick overall.

Saints | Khiry Robinson putting in the time    Mon Jun 23, 05:42 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Khiry Robinson has doubled his offseason workouts to add additional strength and stamina. He has also studied the playbook extensively, which head coach Sean Payton has noticed, 'You see him, just from an assignment standpoint, understanding the protections much quicker.' Robinson will compete for touches with RBs Pierre Thomas, Mark Ingram and Travaris Cadet.

Saints | Brandon Cooks' versatility excites Drew Brees    Wed Jun 18, 06:12 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks could be in line to replace RB Darren Sproles' production in his rookie season, according to QB Drew Brees. Brees noted that the team was creative with Sproles, using him out of the backfield, splitting him wide and using him on screen passes. Cooks was versatile and extremely productive in 2013 in college, and he's incredibly fast, has good hands and is strong after the catch. "Oh man, I've seen all the highlights, and that gets you excited," Brees said. "I think he can do a lot of things. I think he can play outside receiver. I think I he can play inside in the slot. You can hand him reverses. You can throw him screens. He can return punts.'

Footballguys view: If Cooks gets some of Sproles receptions and runs deep routes, he could be a real surprise in redraft leagues. The Saints offense has elite QB play and high-end volume in the passing game, so this news makes Cooks one of the more attractive rookie wideouts in redraft.

Saints | More on Jimmy Graham     Tue Jun 17, 01:41 PM

Updating a previous report, the NFL will argue that New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham should be franchise tagged as a tight end because he meets in the tight end room, regularly lines up where tight ends line up on the field, and even lists himself as a tight end on his twitter account.

Footballguys view: The NFL defines a tight end as lining up close to the formation, not just in-line, so they might successful with this argument. Graham only truly lined up "out wide", apart from the line by a large distance less than half of the time.

Saints | Jimmy Graham's hearings begin    Tue Jun 17, 12:04 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham's franchise-tag grievance begins Tuesday, June 17. Arbitrator Stephen Burbank will hear arguments from the NFL Players Association and the NFL Management Council to determine if Graham should be labeled as a tight end or wide receiver for franchise-tag purposes. It's unknown how long the hearings will take, but they could last up to a week.

Footballguys view: The most likely outcome here is that the team and Graham find a number in the middle on their own, like the Packers and Jermichael Finley did a few years ago. If Graham is designated as a wide receiver, each league software will probably have to make their own decision about how to classify him, which could change the landscape of the tight end position in fantasy football.

Saints | Kenny Stills, Akiem Hicks looking good     Fri Jun 13, 01:20 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Kenny Stills and DT Akiem Hicks look like breakout candidates for the team this year. Both have been carrying themselves with plenty of swagger in offseason workouts. Stills has been playing all three receiver positions and running all of the routes. Hicks has shown himself to be one of the strongest players on the roster, and he's been nearly unblockable.

Footballguys view: Stills is the guy to watch here for fantasy owners. He's got the speed and ball-tracking ability to be a fine deep threat for the Saints. With Darren Sproles and Lance Moore moving on this offseason, the Saints are looking for players to pick up the slack. Stills could be at the top of that list.

Saints | Mark Ingram more focused    Thu Jun 12, 01:11 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram has shown increased focus in offseason practices this year and has been more intense during workouts as he enters his contract year. Ingram knows he must work hard, because RBs Khiry Robinson and Travaris Cadet wait in the wings. Head coach Sean Payton noted that Ingram did a good job of tuning out some of the criticism last year, when his 4.9 yards per carry led the team in 2013.

Footballguys view: Well, he's in a contract year, so motivation and focus definitely come from that for most players. While he has had moments, Ingram never seems to sustain them. Pierre Thomas seems to be taking on more of the role departed back Darren Sproles filled, so how much Ingram carries going forward is unknown. Optimistically we think he can be a solid flex, with the upside to be a good RB2 if things break right.

Saints | Drew Brees not worried about Jimmy Graham's absence    Wed Jun 11, 01:05 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees thinks the offense will be fine at mandatory minicamp this week in the absence of TE Jimmy Graham, who is waiting on a franchise-tag dispute. Graham led the team last year with 86 catches, 1,215 yards and 16 touchdowns. 'Look at our numbers over the last eight years,' Brees said. 'We've had a lot of different guys in there. Jimmy's only been here four years. He's only been here half the time. We were putting up some pretty big numbers before he got here, and we've been putting up some big numbers since he's been here.'

Footballguys view: Graham lined up in the slot on 67 percent of his snaps last year. The difference in salary for a franchise tagged WR versus a franchise tagged TE is about $5 million. There doesn't seem to be any resolution in sight, but we're still a long way from training camp.

New Orleans Saints WR Joe Morgan (knee) is hoping to carve out a role in the offense after missing all of last season with a torn ACL. He estimates that his health is at 80 percent, but he hopes to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Morgan has made a few spectacular plays as a deep threat, and he was expected to take over for Devery Henderson last year before suffering the injury. Now, the team has drafted Brandin Cooks, who has arguably even better jets than Morgan, so Morgan will be fighting for a roster spot.
