Saints | Jameis Winston to talk with Saints    Fri Feb 20, 05:08 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints during the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: Well, this is just kicking the tires, right? Sure, Drew Brees isn't getting any younger, but you aren't spending the pick to get Winston to back him up for a few years. This is a curious meeting, but the Combine is the time when teams get to meet guys they have no interest in, just to get their measure.

Saints | Sean Payton wants Mark Ingram back    Thu Feb 19, 08:00 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent RB Mark Ingram is coveted by head coach Sean Payton, and Payton is hoping the team can find a way to re-sign him. 'Hopefully he's someone that's back in the black and gold. Because he's been a big part of our success offensively,' Payton said of Ingram, who finally had a breakout year in his fourth NFL season, running for 964 yards and nine touchdowns and earning his first Pro Bowl invite as an alternate.

Saints | No extension for Drew Brees?    Thu Feb 19, 07:56 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees doesn't need to receive a contract extension for the team to get under the 2015 salary cap, according to head coach Sean Payton. Brees has two years left on his five-year, $100 million deal, with salary cap hits of $26.4 million and $27.4 million in 2015 and 2016. The Saints are currently projected at $25 to $30 million over the cap.

Saints | Mark Ingram's status depends on cap    Wed Feb 18, 04:01 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent RB Mark Ingram's future with the team depends on Ingram's market value in free agency and the team's lack of salary-cap flexibility, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Loomis didn't rule out re-signing Ingram if the two sides can agree on his value before March 10.

Footballguys view: He enters free agency the right way. Ingram rushed for a career-high 964 yards last season and will be one of the top free-agent running backs on the market.

Saints | Brandin Cooks to work with Drew Brees    Fri Feb 13, 04:20 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks said he plans to work out with QB Drew Brees this offseason.

Footballguys view: We like hearing this. Cooks flashed as a rookie in 2014 before he was knocked out for the rest of the season with a thumb injury. We'll see if Cooks and Brees can build strong on-field chemistry this offseason.

Saints | Shayne Graham agrees to deal    Thu Feb 12, 06:40 PM

New Orleans Saints PK Shayne Graham signed a one-year deal Thursday, Feb. 12. Financial terms were not disclosed. At 37 years old, Graham will be competing with fellow PK Dustin Hopkins for the starting job. Hopkins was signed to a Reserve/Futures deal in 2014.

Saints | Parys Haralson re-signs    Thu Feb 12, 02:34 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Parys Haralson re-signed with the team on a one-year deal Thursday, Feb. 12, according to a league source. He has played in every regular-season snap in the last two years, making 20 starts with 65 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Footballguys view: The Saints will likely still look to add more youth and athleticism to the outside linebackers spot this offseason. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Saints | Marques Colston may need to restructure    Tue Feb 10, 09:48 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston will probably return at a reduced rate from his $7 million salary in 2015, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: Colston just isn't the same player he used to be. With his skill set in obvious decline, we'd be shocked to see the Saints keep him around with a $9.7 million cap hit in 2015. He is a key veteran leader, so that's why working out a renegotiated deal is the best move for the Saints.

Saints | Re-sign Luke McCown    Thu Feb 5, 11:42 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown re-signed with the team Thursday, Feb. 5. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: An average backup, but no more, McCown gives the Saints a solid reserve who can step in of something happens to Drew Brees. One wonders, though, if the Saints might be thinking beyond Brees, and of course beyond McCown.

Saints | Drew Brees optimistic about future    Tue Jan 27, 06:53 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said 2014 was the most frustrating season of his career, but remained optimistic about the team's future. 'I think we've identified the problems or the things that got us beat or the things that didn't allow us to be as good as we know we can be, and we have the solution to fix it,' Brees said. 'It's going to take a lot of work, but I know we can get it done.'

Footballguys view: We're cautiously optimistic when it comes to Brees' future. It was certainly a down year for Brees in 2014. Touchdown passes were down, and interceptions were up for the veteran quarterback. He also fell short of 5,000 yards passing for the first time in four years--although he was only 48 yards short of that mark. We'll see if Brees can look more like the QB we've become used to in 2015.

Saints | Jimmy Graham ruling out surgery?    Mon Jan 26, 10:18 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham (shoulder) caught three passes for 30 yards and two scores in the Pro Bowl Sunday, Jan. 25, and when asked if his performance would rule out surgery, he said, 'It should, which is really exciting.'

Footballguys view: Graham and the Saints need to get back on the right track in 2015. This shoulder injury slowed him down at times in 2014, and Graham finished with only 889 yards receiving. The Saints will be cautious with him as he recovers from this injury without surgery.

Saints | Sign Delvin Breaux    Sat Jan 24, 02:39 PM

Free-agent CB Delvin Breaux (CFL) has reached an agreement with the New Orleans Saints Saturday, Jan. 24. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: A good signing for the Saints here. Breaux was the CFL's best corner last year, and he pretty much shut down the Montreal Alouttes star WR Duron Carter (three catches, 25 yards) when the two faced each other in the semifinals of the playoffs. Measuring in at 6'1" 196 pounds, Breaux could earn playing time for his hometown team right off the bat in 2015.

Saints | Jimmy Graham might avoid surgery    Fri Jan 23, 10:25 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Jimmy Graham (shoulder) said he'll rehabilitate his shoulder injury after the Pro Bowl, but he hasn't made a final decision on surgery. 'It's something we talked about and is something that's still being debated,' Graham said. 'This is kind of a trial to see where I'm at. I've had three weeks off and I've finally had some time to heal. It feels great, and I'm going to continue to do my rehab and get back to 100%.'

Footballguys view: We'll have to see how Graham continues to recover before any decision is made about surgery. By the time training camp rolls around, Graham should be good to go.

Saints | Will work out Delvin Breaux    Fri Jan 23, 03:39 AM

Free-agent CB Delvin Breaux (CFL) will work out for the New Orleans Saints on Friday, Jan. 23. CFL players are not eligible to sign NFL deals until Feb. 10.

Footballguys view: Breaux is the best corner in the CFL, and he's going to be highly coveted by NFL teams. In a game against Duron Carter, Breaux held him to three catches for 25 yards. Carter has first-round talent at 6'4" 205 pounds, and Breaux frustrated him all game long. Breaux has a good size/speed combination. At 6'1" 196 pounds, Breaux can be physical at the line of scrimmage with opposing wide receivers.

Saints | Mark Ingram wants to return to Saints    Thu Jan 22, 06:37 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram, who will be eligible for free agency this offseason, wants to return to the team next year, and he thinks the interest is mutual.

Footballguys view: After years of struggling to produce and struggling to stay healthy, Ingram finally put it together with the Saints. Ingram ran for 964 yards on 226 attempts and nine touchdowns last year, which were all career highs. His 74.2 yards per game ranked him eighth in the league.

Saints | Dennis Allen hired    Tue Jan 20, 09:52 AM

Former Oakland Raiders head coach Dennis Allen was hired by the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, Jan. 20, as a special defensive assistant to defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

Footballguys view: Allen failed as a head coach with the Raiders, but he's a defensive-minded guy who understands how to create concepts that work. He has experience in New Orleans from 2006-2010 as a defensive line and defensive backs coach.

Saints | Marques Colston may be asked for pay cut    Wed Jan 14, 02:22 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston may be asked to take a pay cut this offseason, because he is scheduled to make $7 million in 2015 and count $9.7 million against the salary cap.

Footballguys view: Late season practice call-up Brandon Coleman has a similar skillset to Colston, and the Saints confidence in his development could be the denominator in this decision. Dynasty owners of both should stay tuned.

Saints | Khiry Robinson missed opportunity    Tue Jan 13, 10:17 AM

New Orleans Saints RB Khiry Robinson was slated to have his role increased before he suffered a fractured forearm midseason.

Footballguys view: Robinson should get an opportunity in 2015. Hopefully, he will stay healthy and play up to his potential if he does get a larger role. Mark Ingram is a free agent, so Robinson could enter training camp as the lead back for the Saints.

Saints | Tim Hightower signed to futures deal    Sun Jan 4, 04:13 PM

The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent RB Tim Hightower (Redskins) to a futures contract Sunday, Jan. 4, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Interesting to see that Hightower gets a contract at this point in the offseason for the Saints. Deep dynasty league owners make sure to keep tabs here. The Saints backfield could look different in 2015. Mark Ingram hits free agency after a career-high 964 yards rushing. Khiry Robinson could be the lead back, and a guy like Hightower might earn a role as a reserve. Hightower has been out of football since tearing his left ACL in 2011 when he was with Washington.

Saints | Three coaches will not return    Fri Jan 2, 02:37 PM

New Orleans Saints wide receivers coach Henry Ellard, tight ends coach Terry Malone and assistant defensive backs coach Andre Curtis will not return to the team next season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints did not look very good this year, especially not when compared to expectations. There will be some changes as they look to rebound next season.

Saints | Two signed to active roster    Fri Dec 26, 06:57 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman and LB Jerry Franklin were signed to the active roster from the practice squad Friday, Dec. 26.

Footballguys view: Coleman is a long, lean receiver with good speed in the Marques Colston mold, so he could start to improve his long-term outlook with the franchise if he gets on the field and makes a few plays against Tampa Sunday.
