Saints | Drew Brees retiring after Super Bowl win?    Fri Aug 17, 01:21 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees will retire after this season if the Saints win the Super Bowl, former teammate Reggie Bush said in an on-camera interview released Friday, Aug. 17. If not, Bush said Brees will keep playing.

Footballguys view: Brees might only play 2-3 more years in an optimistic projection, so going out on top this year isn't that outlandish. Tom Savage is his current backup and intriguing third-stringer Taysom Hill is probably more than a year away from being ready. If the team sees this in the range of possibilities, they haven't tipped their hand in their quarterback depth chart.

Saints | Cameron Meredith back at practice    Wed Aug 15, 01:25 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (undisclosed) returned to practice Wednesday, Aug. 15, but did not participate in team drills.

Footballguys view: Meredith missed all of the 2017 season due to a knee injury. Reports indicate there doesn't seem to be any concern this undisclosed injury is related to his surgically repaired knee. If healthy, Meredith could be a value pick for Fantasy GMs are his current ADP of WR49 (10.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Cameron Meredith dealing with unknown ailment    Tue Aug 14, 01:31 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (undisclosed) has missed the last several days of practice with an undisclosed injury, although there doesn't seem to be any concern the injury is related to his surgically repaired knee, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Meredith posted about obstacles and tests on his twitter account, so this could be more than minor, but it is difficult to know. This certainly makes us less enthusiastic to draft Meredith at ADP and could open a path for rookie Tre'Quan Smith to contribute early.

Saints | Fast start for Tre'Quan Smith    Thu Aug 9, 10:06 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Tre'Quan Smith caught four of his five targets for a team-high 48 yards in a 24-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason Thursday, Aug. 9.

Footballguys view: Smith is having a great camp and should open the season as a top four receiver for the team with Brandon Coleman released. While Ted Ginn is still blocking his fantasy opportunity to be truly relevant this year, Smith will play a factor in the offense and help Drew Brees.

Saints | Taysom Hill uses his arm and legs    Thu Aug 9, 10:00 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill completed eight of his nine pass attempts for 72 yards and rushed seven times for 52 yards and a touchdown in a 24-20 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars in the preseason.

Footballguys view: Hill is a deep dynasty name to monitor as a possible heir to Drew Brees. He would provide a lot of additional fantasy value as a gifted runner.

Saints | Marcus Williams starring in camp    Tue Aug 7, 08:07 AM

New Orleans Saints FS Marcus A. Williams picked off QB Drew Brees for the third day in a row in practice Monday, Aug. 6. Williams has been the biggest standout in camp, according to beat writer Mike Triplett.

Saints | New Orleans cuts ties with Brandon Coleman    Sun Aug 5, 05:17 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman was released after failing his physical Sunday, Aug. 5, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: The Saints may carry only four wide receivers into the regular season with the additions of Cameron Meredith and Tre'Quan Smith. Former Patriot Austin Carr is an interesting name in contention to be #5 now. Recent additions of Michael Floyd and Brandon Tate might have been in anticipation of Coleman's release.

Saints | Cameron Meredith gets special tutelage    Sat Aug 4, 02:56 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) worked one-on-one with QB Drew Brees after practice Saturday, Aug. 4, as the quarterback showed Meredith routes in the end zone.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Meredith could be starting opposite Michael Thomas for the high-powered Saints offense. That's a fine fantasy asset if he does end up winning that position. We'll see if he can, but we'll also watch rookie WR Tre'Quan Smith as recent buzz has been very positive about him flashing in camp.

Saints | John Phillips working out for NOLA    Sat Aug 4, 02:54 PM

Free-agent TE John Phillips has been working out for the New Orleans Saints, as the team has a few injured tight ends early in training camp. Phillips has been with the team off and on over the past two seasons.

Footballguys view: Nothing to see here. Phillips is a big-bodied blocker with a bit of an injury history. The Saints top tight end is Ben Watson.

Saints | Marcus Williams compared to a great    Sat Aug 4, 02:53 PM

New Orleans Saints S Marcus Williams has a big fan in QB Drew Brees, who heaped praise on the safety on Saturday, Aug. 4. 'I really love everything about him,' Brees said. 'Marcus makes some plays where you're like, 'How did he get there? Where did he come from?'' The QB also compared Williams to former Baltimore Ravens S Ed Reed.

Saints | Tommylee Lewis has uphill climb    Sat Aug 4, 02:52 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Tommylee Lewis might need to win the top kickoff returner job if he wants to make the team's final roster. The addition of veteran WR Brandon Tate might hurt him, and the final receiver job might come down to Tate versus Lewis in preseason games.

Saints | Cameron Meredith doesn't practice    Fri Aug 3, 11:41 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) was held out of practice Friday, Aug. 3.

Footballguys view: This was his second straight missed practice. We'll monitor this as there was some speculation about the condition of his injured knee after the Bears gave him an abnormally low restricted free agent tender considering his production in 2016.

Saints | Michael Floyd signed by Saints    Tue Jul 31, 07:20 PM

Free-agent WR Michael Floyd (Vikings) was signed to an undisclosed deal by the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, July 31, according to a source.

Footballguys view: It's been quite some time since Floyd has been fantasy relevant. Injuries and off-field issues have plagued him recently but landing with the Saints is interesting...even though he's no lock for the 53-man roster.

Saints | Travin Dural needs surgery    Sun Jul 29, 03:51 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Travin Dural (arm) was diagnosed with a broken humerus Sunday, July 29, and will have surgery in the coming days, according to sources.

Footballguys view: That's the upper arm and it probably means probably headed for injured reserve since the LSU product was vying to make the roster as the last receiver.

Saints | Mike Westhoff returns as special teams coach    Sun Jul 29, 10:24 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints special teams coach Mike Westhoff will rejoin the team for the 2018 season. He was not with the club during offseason practices after undergoing a procedure where doctors inserted a segmented metal piece from his hip to his knee in his left leg but he returned on the first day of training camp Thursday, July 26. Westhoff will need to use a cane for about a year.

Saints | Alex Okafor to be closely monitored    Sat Jul 28, 10:20 AM

New Orleans Saints LB Alex Okafor (Achilles') will have his practice reps monitored in training camp, as he returns from a torn Achilles' tendon, according to head coach Sean Payton. The team hopes to build him up to a point where he will be capable of playing 40 to 50 snaps.

Footballguys view: There are some success stories among pass rushers returning from achilles tears, including Terrell Suggs and Cameron Wake, so we shouldn't write off Okafor. He was a big under the radar contributor last year and should at least be a passing down specialist this year if everything goes well.

Saints | Michael Thomas avoids PUP list    Tue Jul 24, 05:22 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (undisclosed) was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list heading into training camp. Thomas had sat out minicamp.

Footballguys view: Fantasy GMs are super excited to see what Thomas can do in year three of his pro career. Each of the last two years, Thomas has finished as a top-10 fantasy receiver...but it doesn't seem like he's yet peaked in his production. Projecting Thomas for 100 catches, 1,200 receiving yards and 5-8 touchdowns seems fair once again. It's a reason why Thomas has a current ADP of WR5 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Brandon Coleman placed on PUP list    Tue Jul 24, 05:16 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman (neck) was sent to the Active/ Physically Unable to Perform list Tuesday, July 24.

Footballguys view: It always seems to be something with Coleman. He's got incredible size, measuring in at 6'6" 225 pounds but Coleman has yet to truly play up to his potential. Reports from around Saints camp indicate this injury is minor but it's not a good look for a player on the bubble.

Saints | Cameron Meredith in line to start    Tue Jul 24, 12:34 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith is the best bet to be the team's No. 2 receiver, according to Josh Katzenstein of The Times-Picayune.

Footballguys view: Meredith could line up outside opposite Michael Thomas and give Drew Brees yet another quality target to throw to. That leaves Ted Ginn Jr. manning the slot, a position where he can thrive. Meredith has a current ADP of WR51 (11.09) in 12-team PPR leagues. If he's healthy (Meredith missed all of last year with the Bears due to a knee injury), Meredith could easily outperform that draft position.

Saints | Alvin Kamara ready for more    Sun Jul 22, 11:14 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara said that having a year of experience under his belt will help him build on his rookie season.

Footballguys view: We could see Kamara approach 1,000 yards rushing with 75 or 80 receptions in 2018. He could do more because his role should be larger...especially with Mark Ingram suspended the first four games of the year. Kamara is a RB1 for Fantasy GMs and has a current ADP of RB5 (1.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Two Saints WRs on roster bubble?    Thu Jul 19, 09:22 PM

New Orleans Saints WRs Brandon Coleman and Tommylee Lewis are potentially on the roster bubble, according to Nick Underhill of The Advocate. With the team adding more depth at the position 'capable of laying down blocks in the running and screen games,' Coleman may have to re-prove himself, while Lewis will have to show he's the best kick returner in camp to make the team. Lewis has done a 'fine' job since latching on two years ago, but Underhill explains that 'the talent on this team is too thick for fine to cut it.'

Footballguys view: Lewis and Coleman are about as opposite as you can be when you play the same position. Coleman is a huge receiver, measuring in at 6'6", but he's never lived up to his potential as a red zone target. Lewis is a small (5'7" 168 pounds) receiver who needs to make the team based on his special teams skill as a return man. Neither one has a ton of fantasy value, even in deep dynasty leagues.

Saints | Daniel Lasco shown the door    Wed Jul 18, 01:50 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Daniel Lasco was released Wednesday, July 18, in the wake of the signing of RB Shane Vereen.

Footballguys view: Lasco was a do-everything back in college at Cal but he never did much to impress with the Saints. The addition of Vereen meant there was no room for Lasco with training camp coming up. We could see a team show interest in Lasco but likely just for a camp body.

Link to story
Daniel Lasco player page

Saints | Shane Vereen signs with Saints    Wed Jul 18, 11:39 AM

Free-agent RB Shane Vereen (Giants) signed an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, July 18.

Footballguys view: Vereen is a pass-catching back who gives the Saints (more) veteran depth on their roster. Their RB room is jam packed with talent, so Vereen is no lock for the 53-man roster. Alvin Kamara leads the way with Mark Ingram as a top reserve (when he's back from his four-game suspension). Behind Kamara, Vereen will compete with guys like Terrance West and Jonathan Williams to establish a pecking order.

Saints | Cameron Meredith hopeful for training camp    Tue Jul 17, 03:32 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) said that while he is still recovering from his knee injury and has been limited in team activities thus far, he is hopeful to be given the 'all clear' for training camp. 'On a scale of '1 to 10,' it's almost a 10... I haven't had a setback along the recovery process,' Meredith said of his injury. 'I'm gaining strength day by day, month by month. I'm excited to see how soon I can get back, but the main objective for me is to do as much as I can with the trainers to get ready for the season. My goal is to try and get back to training camp. As long as there aren't any setbacks or anything like that, it shouldn't be a problem.'

Footballguys view: Meredith missed all of the 2017 season due to a torn ACL and a slight MCL tear that he's been rigorously working to come back from. A restricted free agent earlier this year, the Saints were able to sign him away from the Bears and he could be in for a career year catching passes from Drew Brees for the first time...if he's healthy. Fantasy owners know the talent and love the situation, but this injury brings about some caution when it comes to Meredith's average draft position. He has a current ADP of WR52 (11.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | A.J. Klein should be ready for camp    Sun Jul 15, 07:59 PM

New Orleans Saints LB A.J. Klein (hernia) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: In his first year with the Saints (2017), Klein only made it through 12 games before getting put on Injured Reserve with this groin injury. The team thought Klein would do more with an increased role but that wasn't the case. Klein struggled in coverage and against the run. He should be a part-time player for the Saints in 2018, getting pulled in subpackages.

Saints | Alex Anzalone expected to start    Thu Jul 12, 11:50 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Alex Anzalone will likely be the starting weakside linebacker this year, according to Herbie Teope of NFL.com.

Footballguys view: Anzalone has a chance to be relevant in IDP leagues if he can stay healthy - which has been a problem during his career. Demario Davis is probably the most valuable IDP linebacker in New Orleans, but Anzalone could be good competition to lead the team in tackles.

Saints | Tre'Quan Smith transitioning well    Thu Jul 12, 10:46 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Tre'Quan Smith has 'handled the install well' during spring practices, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'I think he's a quick study,' Payton said. 'He's big and he's doing a good job.'

Footballguys view: Smith will compete free agent addition Cameron Meredith and veteran Ted Ginn for targets and snaps. Even though he is in line for a valuable role long term and the Saints are excellent at finding fits for their offense in the draft, Smith is probably not going to have redraft value this year without multiple injuries in the Saints offense. He's still a good dynasty stash.

Saints | Cameron Jordan in elite company    Sat Jul 7, 11:29 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan recorded what he called a 'triple-double' last year, recording double-digit sacks, tackles for loss and passes defensed in the same season. Jordan and Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt are the only players to accomplish the feat in the last decade.

Footballguys view: Jordan might be the most underrated defensive lineman in the league. He's a strong DE1 in IDP leagues and he should be a motor for a Saints defense that is no longer a liability.
