Saints | New Orleans talking with Michael Thomas    Mon Jun 17, 06:17 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has had some contract extension talks with the Saints, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.

Footballguys view: Thomas is in the final year of his rookie contract and is on the books for only $1.6 million in 2019. We'll see if the Saints can find a way to get him a new deal before he hits the open market (or more precisely is franchise tagged) in 2020. Thomas is likely to be the highest-paid wide receiver in the NFL when a new contract is agreed upon.

Saints | Alvin Kamara has more to prove    Sun Jun 16, 02:15 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara will be tasked with an expanded role in 2019 with the departure of backfield mate Mark Ingram. 'I'm so anxious to see like, 'What else?'' Kamara said recently. 'You know what I'm saying? What else could I do? Where else could I line up? How else could I be successful? That's the best part of this profession for me. What's the next step you're going to take? 'Ok, he was good last year. How are you going to prove that you are what you are?''

Footballguys view: Kamara has a shot to be the #1 overall fantasy running back with a larger role this year. He is in a very stable offense and probably has the least risk any of the top four backs.

Saints | Cameron Meredith thinking big picture    Thu Jun 13, 10:28 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) said sitting out OTAs and minicamp is 'mostly a matter of being smart' in order to ensure a healthy training camp.

Footballguys view: Meredith's tenure with the Saints is hanging by a string after he took a paycut. Rishard Matthews was signed to give Meredith even more competition for a roster spot at a position that doesn't have any to spare.

Saints | Rishard Matthews headed to New Orleans    Thu Jun 13, 04:31 PM

Free-agent WR Rishard Matthews (Titans) signed an undisclosed contract with the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, June 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Matthews is healthy now after a hamstring injury landed him on Injured Reserve last season. He's got a real chance at cracking the 53-man roster with the Saints. They've got a ton of question marks on the roster behind Michael Thomas and Ted Ginn Jr. We'll see if Matthews can do enough to impress in training camp.

Saints | Rishard Matthews trying out    Wed Jun 12, 06:43 PM

Free-agent WR Rishard Matthews (Jets) is participating in the New Orleans Saints minicamp this week on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: Matthews had a bizarre 2018 season, playing eight games on the season with three coming for the Titans and five for the Jets. He had five catches for 24 yards during those contests in 2018. We'll see if his tryout with the Saints can earn him a chance on the 90-man roster for training camp.

Saints | New Orleans makes roster moves    Tue Jun 11, 08:31 PM

Free-agent WR Chad Hansen (Broncos) signed with the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, June 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The team also placed LB Chase Hansen (undisclosed) on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list and waived CB David Simmons Jr.

Footballguys view: Hansen was a fourth-round pick for the Jets in the 2017 NFL draft but he's bounced around the league since then. He's a decent route runner and has good body control but has not latched on anywhere just yet...and it's doubtful he does that now. The Saints do have a high-powered passing attack, so any player in that is going to get our attention...and Hansen does but only in super crazy deep dynasty formats.

  Saints | Cameron Meredith a no-go Tuesday    Tue Jun 11, 02:08 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) was at practice but did not participate Tuesday, June 11.

Footballguys view: The reports were already out there that Meredith would not participate in minicamp. His knee injury limited him to just six games in 2018 and has been rather difficult to come back from. Even though he took a $2.1 million pay cut earlier this offseason, Meredith is no lock for the 53-man roster.

Saints | Cameron Jordan lands extension    Tue Jun 11, 12:57 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan agreed to a three-year, $52.5 million contract extension Tuesday, June 11, that keeps him signed through the 2023 season.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Saints in the 2011 NFL draft, Jordan had previously expressed that he wants to be a Saints 'lifer' and is now under contract through his age-34 season. Jordan's new deal is worth a maximum of $55.5 million, which includes more than $42 million in guaranteed money, per Schefter's report.

Saints | New Orleans taking a look at Tristan Blewett    Mon Jun 10, 04:00 PM

Free-agent Tristan Blewett - a Major League Rugby player for the New Orleans Gold - participated in a work out for the New Orleans Saints on Monday, June 10.

Footballguys view: It's always interesting seeing if these rugby players can stick in the NFL. We'll see if Saints head coach Sean Payton (who said earlier this offseason that he was 'looking everywhere' for talent) is impressed enough with Blewett to offer him a spot in training camp.

Saints | New Orleans adds a pair of runners    Tue May 28, 04:58 PM

Free-agent RB Javorius Allen (Ravens) and Matthew Dayes (49ers) signed undisclosed contracts with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, May 28. The Saints waived RB A.J. Ouellette and CB Jordan Wyatt to make room for them on the roster.

Footballguys view: The Saints have added more talent to a running back room that has some interesting names behind superstar starter Alvin Kamara. Dayes is a change-of-pace back and Allen is a good receiving back as well. Latavius Murray is the most likely to win the No. 2 job behind Kamara in 2019. That makes guys like Dayes and Allen (plus Dwayne Washington, Devine Ozigbo) competing for the one of two spots behind Kamara and Murray.

Saints | Matthew Dayes signs with Saints    Tue May 28, 12:25 PM

Free-agent RB Matthew Dayes (49ers) signed a one-year deal Tuesday, May 28, with the New Orleans Saints, according to a source. Further terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: A seventh-round pick out of NC State in the 2017 NFL draft, Dayes is a good all-purpose back who is best suited as a role player in the pros. We'll see if he can latch on with the Saints and their revamped RB corps. Behind Alvin Kamara, guys like Latavius Murray, Dwayne Washington and Devine Ozigbo will compete (with Dayes) to establish a pecking order at the position.

Saints | Jared Cook impressing new teammates    Sun May 26, 12:26 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jared Cook has impressed his new teammates so far in OTAs, with QB Drew Brees near the top of the list. 'I'd read a lot of good things about him before he got here, but he's certainly impressed us these first couple of days,' Brees said Thursday, May 23. 'He's got a great feel for the game, and I think he's going to fit very well in our offense. He's got great length, so he's got a big catch radius. You feel confident with those 50-50 balls. You feel like there's a lot of places where you can throw if where he can get it and the other guy can't. Anytime you have a target like that, you feel like that's a good matchup.'

Footballguys view: Cook is an impressive player but he's never quite played up to his expectations or physical ability. However, he is coming off the best season of his career in the NFL with a Raiders team in 2018 that is nowhere near as dangerous as the Saints squad he's on in 2019. He's currently going off the board at TE8 (6.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Marcus Davenport making progress    Thu May 23, 10:34 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Marcus Davenport (toe) was able to take part in individual drills during OTAs Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft, Davenport is incredibly dangerous as a pass-rusher. He missed three games last year due to this toe injury but is trending to return in training camp.

Saints | Cameron Meredith still not practicing    Thu May 23, 03:35 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) spent most of the session at organized team activities on the field with a trainer but did not practice Thursday, May 23.'He's on the sideline, but they say probably next week he can do a little bit more. But he looks healthy. He looks good. He looks like he's coming along well,' receivers coach Curtis Johnson said.

Footballguys view: Back in March, Meredith agreed to a $2.1 million pay cut. He appeared in six games with the Saints last year but didn't do much, only getting targeted 10 times. This knee problem has been plaguing Meredith for quite some time. He has the talent, and the opportunity in this high-powered Saints offense, to have a bounce-back season in 2019. We might also see him not make the 53-man roster. It's setting up to be a boom-or-bust type of year for Meredith as he wants to get his career back on track.

Saints | New Orleans tries out three running backs    Thu May 23, 03:10 PM

Free-agent RBs Fozzy Whittaker, Rob Kelley and Javorius Allen worked out for the New Orleans Saints on Thursday, May 23.

Footballguys view: The Saints are just updating their emergency list here. They have veteran Latavius Murray as the primary backup to Alvin Kamara this year. Behind Murray, Dwayne Washington and undrafted rookie Devine Ozigbo will compete to establish a pecking order.

Saints | Jared Cook's role to expand?    Sun May 12, 08:10 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Jared Cook will be given the chance to show 'everything he can do' for the offense, according to tight ends coach Dan Campbell. 'The guy is over 30 and he still runs like the wind. He can absolutely smoke,' Campbell said. 'He's got 35-inch arms, he is long, and he is fast.'

Footballguys view: We've seen Cook finish as a top-5 fantasy tight end like he did last season for the Raiders. This is a much better passing game with the Saints, so projecting him for similar output is not outlandish. We like where he's going off the board right now. Cook has a current ADP of TE8 (6.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Cyril Grayson trying out    Sat May 11, 01:55 PM

Free-agent WR Cyril Grayson (Bears) is participating in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: Grayson is a track standout who had been on the Seahawks, Bears, Texans and Colts practice squads, but has failed to stick. He's close to his college LSU and could find a spot on the Saints practice squad next with a good tryout and summer.

Saints | Sylvester Williams trying out    Fri May 10, 08:56 PM

Free-agent DT Sylvester Williams (Dolphins) is participating in the New Orleans Saints rookie minicamp this weekend on a tryout basis.

Footballguys view: Williams was a first round pick in 2013, but hasn't ever lived up to the billing. He started a few games for the Lions last year before being released during the season. He could catch on during the season if a team needs someone to provide defensive line depth, but it seems like he's past the point where teams think he can fulfill his potential.

Saints | New Orleans adds eight UDFAs    Fri May 10, 03:12 PM

Undrafted rookie free-agent DE Carl Granderson (Wyoming), OL Ethan Greenridge (Villanova), LB Porter Gustin (Southern California), RB Darnell Holland (Kennesaw State), OT Derrick Kelly II (Florida State), LS Nick Moore (Georgia), DT Shy Tuttle (Tennessee) and LB Darrell X. Williams (Auburn) signed undisclosed three-year contracts with the New Orleans Saints on Friday, May 10.

Footballguys view: Granderson was considered draftable on many analyst boards, but he is facing a sexual assault charge and fell out of the draft. He could provide edge rush help if his legal issue clears up and he makes the team.

Saints | New Orleans cuts three from roster    Fri May 10, 03:02 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Martez Carter, LB Chase Hansen and TE Jake Powell were waived Friday, May 10.

Footballguys view: Carter is a Darren Sproles type who was previously with Washington. He could get another look somewhere else. His release removes one obstacle to undrafted free agent Devine Ozigbo making the team.

Saints | Four Saints picks sign    Fri May 10, 11:15 AM

New Orleans Saints second-round pick C Erik McCoy, fourth-round pick CB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, sixth-round pick S Saquan Hampton, seventh-round pick TE Alize Mack and seventh-round pick LB Kaden Elliss signed four-year deals Friday, May 10. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: McCoy should be a day one starter at center after Max Unger unexpectedly retired this offseason. Gardner-Johnson is a versatile player who can line up in the slot or at safety and should help the secondary this year. Both were first rounders on some boards and both were secured after trade ups as the team goes for it one more time with Drew Brees not under contract (yet) next year.

Saints | Deonte Harris lands in the Big Easy    Tue May 7, 05:42 PM

Undrafted free-agent WR Deonte Harris (Assumption College) signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints on Tuesday, May 7. Financial terms of the deal were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Harris is tiny, measuring in at 5'6" 170 pounds but he's got great foot frequency and can change direction without losing much speed. At Assumption College he was used on screen passes to turn them into long gains. He was also quite adept as a return man. It's a big leap from Assumption College to the NFL, but we'll see if Harris can make that jump.

Saints | New Orleans announces four UDFA signings    Mon May 6, 05:59 PM

Undrafted free-agents DT Kenny Bigelow Jr. (West Virginia), RB Devine Ozigbo (Nebraska), TE Jake Powell (Monmouth) and CB Jordan Wyatt (Southern Methodist) signed three-year contracts with the New Orleans Saints on Monday, May 6. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ozigbo is the player to watch here. He is a balanced runner who gets to top speed in a hurry. Ozigbo did impress at the East-West Shrine Game practices earlier this year and could work as a decent receiver out of the backfield. We'll see if he can latch onto the Saints roster or practice squad.

Saints | Alvin Kamara utilized in slot    Sun May 5, 12:42 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara was lined up in the slot on 18.9 percent of his receiving snaps in the 2018 season -- the fourth most among running backs with at least 25 slot snaps.

Footballguys view: We should see those numbers continue for Kamara. The Saints are looking for weapons behind WR Michael Thomas in the passing game, and Kamara can be very dangerous as a receiver...from the slot or out of the backfield. He's RB5 (1.06) in ADP right now in 12-team PPR leagues.
