Saints | Sean Payton high on C.J. Spiller    Thu Mar 26, 01:11 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller received some praise from head coach Sean Payton after the team was surprised to be able to land him in free agency. 'His cutup is unbelievable,' Payton said of Spiller. 'And I'm not talking about last season because I think it became challenging, but you go back a couple of years and start looking at his screen reel, a sweep reel, a return reel.'

Footballguys view: Spiller will fill in the Darren Sproles/Reggie Bush role and we actually think he could put up some nice PPR numbers while he's at it. Don't count on RB1 numbers, but some nice RB2 numbers are likely.

Saints | NO considered Reggie Bush    Thu Mar 26, 01:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush was considered by the New Orleans Saints before he agreed with the Niners, according to Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: While Bush might have been a decent fit 'back home' we think the fit with the 49ers could be a good one as well. While we don't see him as an every down back, he should be a solid passing down back and accrue some nice PPR points as well. A low end RB2 or a good RB3 sound about right for Bush.

Saints | Anthony Spencer visited team    Thu Mar 26, 07:46 AM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) visited the New Orleans Saints this week, but Saints head coach Sean Payton told reporters there have been no contract talks with Spencer.

Footballguys view: Spencer has underachieved for a long time, but even so it's surprising how little interest there seems to be. Perhaps his asking price is high. More than likely he finds a home where he will rotate in on the edge, rather than a full time position.

Saints | Marcus Mariota won't go to Saints    Wed Mar 25, 04:50 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota isn't an option for the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said the Saints will not move up in the first round in order to select Mariota.

Footballguys view: The Saints would have to move up in the draft if they want Mariota. Payton also said there wasn't 'one iota' of truth to rumors that New Orleans is looking to trade QB Drew Brees.

Saints | Josh Hill expected to have bigger role    Wed Mar 25, 10:52 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill is expected to have a bigger role in the offense in 2015. Head coach Sean Payton has mentioned him quite a bit since they traded TE Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners should be over the moon with Hill on their roster. In his final year of college at Idaho State, Hill led the nation in receptions for a tight end (72). He's flashed a bit for the Saints over the last couple of years, and now he'll likely have a large role for the offense.

Saints | Jairus Byrd fully healthy    Mon Mar 23, 01:22 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) is fully recovered from a torn meniscus in his knee that caused him to sit out most of 2014, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.

Footballguys view: This news has to make the Saints happy. They paid a hefty price for him last offseason, then he was out for almost the entire year. Their defense will be immediately better with Byrd at full strength.

Saints | Drew Brees not on trade block    Mon Mar 23, 01:12 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees will not be traded, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Recent speculation said that Brees may be on the trade block after his favorite target, TE Jimmy Graham, was dealt to the Seattle Seahawks. 'Anybody who thinks we're trading Drew Brees, that's just not true,' Loomis told USA TODAY Sports. Brees threw for 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2014 while completing 69.2% of his passes for a league-high 4,952 yards.

Footballguys view: We have to think the Saints would entertain offers if the price was right. Brees is not quite what he used to be, but he can still play at a high level. This isn't a strong draft class, and the Saints aren't in any position to snare one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft. Brees is their best option.

Saints | Bryce Harris re-signs for a year    Sat Mar 21, 12:44 AM

The New Orleans Saints re-signed OT Bryce Harris to a one-year contract Friday, March 20, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Harris gives the Saints a swing tackle who has started at both left and right tackle. He'll primarily contribute on special teams.

Saints | Keenan Lewis restructures    Thu Mar 19, 08:42 AM

New Orleans Saints CB Keenan Lewis restructured his deal to put the team $1.7 million under the salary cap. An additional $10.4 million of his contract has been guaranteed, according to a source. The Saints converted portions of his 2015 and 2016 base salaries into signing bonuses, dropping his 2015 base salary from $1.8 million to $850,000 and his 2016 base salary from $4.25 million to $2.7 million. His 2015 cap hit is $4,500,000.

Saints | Dannell Ellerbe restructures    Tue Mar 17, 08:32 AM

New Orleans Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe restructured his contract to reduce his 2015 salary from $8.45 million to $1.1 million. Ellerbe's 2016 and 2017 salaries also reduced from $6.45 million and $6.0 million to $4.1 million each year.

Saints | Drew Brees a trade option?    Mon Mar 16, 06:20 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees might not be off limits in a trade this offseason that has already seen the team trade TE Jimmy Graham, OG Ben Grubbs and WR Kenny Stills. The Saints have begun to think about life after Brees, and a report surfaced late last year that the team is likely to 'draft a quarterback highly this year.'

Footballguys view: We're not going to be surprised by anything the NFL throws at us the rest of this offseason. Last week was the craziest week in NFL offseason history. Brees may not be what he once was, but there would be teams lined up around the block to add him via trade if in fact he is available.

Saints | C.J. Spiller agrees to terms with Saints    Fri Mar 13, 12:45 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) agreed to terms with the New Orleans Saints Friday, March 13.

Footballguys view: Spiller enters a backfield with Mark Ingram as the lead player. His role will be as a part-time runner and receiver out of the backfield. Spiller could be used in a similar way to what the Saints used to do with Darren Sproles.

Saints | Ramon Humber re-signs    Thu Mar 12, 04:01 PM

Free-agent LB Ramon Humber (Saints) re-signed with the New Orleans Saints on a two-year deal Thursday, March 12. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: So the Saints finally keep someone! Humber isn't a huge name but right now he looks like a guy who will see a lot of snaps inside, along with David Hawthorne.

Saints | Sign Brandon Browner    Thu Mar 12, 02:37 PM

Free-agent CB Brandon Browner (Patriots) signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: Suddenly Patriots have an issue in the secondary while New Orleans starts spending some of the money they saved from trading Jimmy Graham to help improve the defense. Browner played well for New England last year when he returned from suspension and (as long as he stays out of trouble) should be a great addition.

Saints | Send Ben Grubbs to Kansas City    Thu Mar 12, 01:30 PM

New Orleans Saints OG Ben Grubbs was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2015 5th round draft pick Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: A good move for both sides here. Grubbs was due $9.6 million this season, so he was likely to get cut by the Saints. The Chiefs have lost four starters on the offensive line over the last two years. It is a good move to add a talent like Grubbs up front.

Saints | C.J. Spiller to visit NOLA    Wed Mar 11, 11:13 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints Thursday, March 12, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: The Saints brought back Mark Ingram to be their lead back earlier in free agency. Adding Spiller would give them a dangerous change-of-pace option behind Ingram.

Saints | C.J. Spiller being pursued by NO    Wed Mar 11, 05:52 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) has reportedly drawn interest from the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: The Saints need a pass-catching back who can work in space, and Spiller certainly qualifies. They are still only one of many teams interested in adding the playmaking RB.

Saints | Reggie Bush returning to New Orleans?    Tue Mar 10, 03:46 PM

Free-agent RB Reggie Bush (Lions) could be returning to the New Orleans Saints. The New England Patriots and San Francisco 49ers are also options, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Anything can happen in today's NFL. Bush is not the player he used to be, but he could fill that change-of-pace role the team lost when Darren Sproles went to the Eagles.

Saints | Curtis Lofton released    Mon Mar 9, 03:36 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Curtis Lofton was officially released Monday, March 9.

Footballguys view: The move saves the Saints over $4 million in cap space. Lofton is not the player he used to be, and teams may ask him to take a reduced role.

Saints | Mark Ingram wants ball more    Mon Mar 9, 02:38 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram just signed a four-year, $16 million deal to come back to New Orleans. Ingram has said he wants an increased workload, and he could get it coming off this new deal.

Footballguys view: This is not what Khiry Robinson's fantasy owners want to hear. Ingram had a career-best year in 2014, finishing with nearly 1,000 yards rushing. We'll see if he can hold up with a larger role. Ingram has only played a full 16-game season once in his career, and that was back in 2012.

Saints | Mark Ingram re-signs with Saints    Sat Mar 7, 09:10 PM

Free-agent RB Mark Ingram has agreed on a four-year, $16 million deal to return to the New Orleans Saints Saturday, March 7.

Footballguys view: This is a good move for both sides here. Ingram stays in New Orleans for a reasonable $4 million price tag annually. He'll once again be the lead back in their RBBC.

Saints | No RFA for Tyrunn Walker    Sat Mar 7, 02:25 AM

Saints | NO ready to make play for Justin Forsett    Fri Mar 6, 12:29 PM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent RB Justin Forsett could see interest from the New Orleans Saints in free agency.

Footballguys view: The Saints are making moves to free up space. Mark Ingram won't be back, and Pierre Thomas was just cut. Forsett works great in a zone-blocking system and he's a good receiver out of the backfield.

Saints | Marques Colston restructures    Fri Mar 6, 10:41 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston restructured his contract Friday, March 6, and will return in 2015.

Footballguys view: Colston needed to re-work his contract as the Saints try to gain salary cap space. He had a $9.7 million cap hit this year, and the team likely asked him to take a pay cut. No details just yet, but coming off a poor season in 2014 it's no surprise that he changed his deal.

Saints | Jairus Byrd restructured    Thu Mar 5, 12:46 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd had his contract restricted Thursday, March 5, to free up $4.8 million against the salary cap, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Saints had to free up some cap space, and re-working Byrd's deal is a wise move. Byrd was due a $6 million roster bonus this year, which will now become a signing bonus and count just $1.2 million against the cap for each of the next five years.

Saints | Three RBs on Saints' roster    Wed Mar 4, 07:29 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Pierre Thomas' (Saints) release by the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, March 4, will save $1.735 million against the salary cap, and he carries an $830,000 'dead money' charge. Thomas would have counted $2.565 million against the salary cap this year. The Saints currently have three running backs on roster: RBs Khiry Robinson, Edwin Baker and Tim Hightower. RBs Travaris Cadet and Mark Ingram are both scheduled to be free agents.

Footballguys view: With the moves at running back, Robinson is the player that benefits the most in the Saints backfield. He needs to stay healthy, but Robinson has the natural ability to be a quality starter and a 1,000-yard rusher.

Saints | Pierre Thomas released     Wed Mar 4, 06:47 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Pierre Thomas was released Wednesday, March 4.

Footballguys view: The Saints are about $20 million over the cap, so they will continue to release players as they maneuver to get in compliance before the start of the new league year. Thomas is 30-years old and the market for running backs is thick with talent. He could attract a bit of interest as a receiver out of the backfield with a part-time role.

Saints | Jameis Winston to talk with Saints    Fri Feb 20, 05:08 PM

Florida State QB Jameis Winston is scheduled to meet with the New Orleans Saints during the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: Well, this is just kicking the tires, right? Sure, Drew Brees isn't getting any younger, but you aren't spending the pick to get Winston to back him up for a few years. This is a curious meeting, but the Combine is the time when teams get to meet guys they have no interest in, just to get their measure.

Saints | Sean Payton wants Mark Ingram back    Thu Feb 19, 08:00 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent RB Mark Ingram is coveted by head coach Sean Payton, and Payton is hoping the team can find a way to re-sign him. 'Hopefully he's someone that's back in the black and gold. Because he's been a big part of our success offensively,' Payton said of Ingram, who finally had a breakout year in his fourth NFL season, running for 964 yards and nine touchdowns and earning his first Pro Bowl invite as an alternate.

Saints | No extension for Drew Brees?    Thu Feb 19, 07:56 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees doesn't need to receive a contract extension for the team to get under the 2015 salary cap, according to head coach Sean Payton. Brees has two years left on his five-year, $100 million deal, with salary cap hits of $26.4 million and $27.4 million in 2015 and 2016. The Saints are currently projected at $25 to $30 million over the cap.

Saints | Mark Ingram's status depends on cap    Wed Feb 18, 04:01 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent RB Mark Ingram's future with the team depends on Ingram's market value in free agency and the team's lack of salary-cap flexibility, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Loomis didn't rule out re-signing Ingram if the two sides can agree on his value before March 10.

Footballguys view: He enters free agency the right way. Ingram rushed for a career-high 964 yards last season and will be one of the top free-agent running backs on the market.

Saints | Brandin Cooks to work with Drew Brees    Fri Feb 13, 04:20 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks said he plans to work out with QB Drew Brees this offseason.

Footballguys view: We like hearing this. Cooks flashed as a rookie in 2014 before he was knocked out for the rest of the season with a thumb injury. We'll see if Cooks and Brees can build strong on-field chemistry this offseason.

Saints | Marques Colston may need to restructure    Tue Feb 10, 09:48 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Marques Colston will probably return at a reduced rate from his $7 million salary in 2015, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: Colston just isn't the same player he used to be. With his skill set in obvious decline, we'd be shocked to see the Saints keep him around with a $9.7 million cap hit in 2015. He is a key veteran leader, so that's why working out a renegotiated deal is the best move for the Saints.
