Saints | Willie Snead questionable for Week 3    Sat Sep 24, 04:27 PM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead (toe) was limited during practice Saturday, Sept. 24, and is listed as questionable for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate Snead could be a game-time decision. If he plays against the Falcons on Monday night, we expect Snead to perform like a WR3/flex with upside.

  Saints | Willie Snead a game-time decision    Sat Sep 24, 03:26 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead (toe) said he will be a game-time decision for the team's Week 3 game. He hopes to play but indicated that head coach Sean Payton will decide on his status.

Footballguys view: We are all excited about Snead's upside against the Falcons on Monday night. Get him in the lineup if you can take the chance, but make sure to have an emergency option at the ready just in case. With this injury, it's best to consider Snead a WR3/flex with upside in Week 3.

New Orleans Saints CB Delvin Breaux (leg), LB Dannell Ellerbe (quadriceps), TE Josh Hill (ankle), OT Terron Armstead (knee), DT Tyeler Davison (shoulder, foot) and FS Kenny Vaccaro (ankle) did not practice Friday, Sept. 23. DE Cameron Jordan (knee) was a limited participant.

Saints | Another missed practice for Willie Snead    Fri Sep 23, 05:09 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead (toe) was absent from practice for the second straight day on Friday, Sept. 23, possibly creating some doubt for his Week 3 availability versus the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football.

Footballguys view: We will watch the Saturday practice report closely. Snead is not the type of veteran who can play after not practicing all week. The matchup against the Falcons is a very good one, but rookie Michael Thomas might end up being the receiver who can take most advantage of it if Snead can't go.

Saints | Drew Brees still confident in Coby Fleener    Fri Sep 23, 01:34 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is off to a disappointing start in his new home and still building a rapport with QB Drew Brees. However, Brees believes as the two players begin to get more comfortable with each other and the team learns what Fleener does best versus man and zone coverage, the results will come.

Footballguys view: Fleener has been getting open and Brees has been trying to find him, but the connection is ragged. The upside is very high if these two can click, so perhaps it's worth carrying Fleener in deeper leagues to see what happens, but his matchups the first two weeks were excellent.

Saints | Willie Snead sidelined    Thu Sep 22, 06:37 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead (toe) did not practice Thursday, Sept. 22.

Footballguys view: The Saints play on Monday night, and if Snead plays (he should) then make sure to get him in as a WR3 with WR2...and maybe even WR1 upside.

Saints | Coby Fleener off to slow start    Wed Sep 21, 12:40 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener caught two passes for 29 yards on eight targets in Week 2, giving him three catches for 35 yards through two games. He blamed himself in post-game comments, saying he made 'three or four' mistakes and singling out a dropped pass on the team's opening drive.

Footballguys view: Listening to the preseason drum beats about Fleener, these struggles are not a surprise. Fleener doesn't know the offense, and he clearly doesn't have strong chemistry with QB Drew Brees. It's time for fantasy owners to find other options out there (Eric Ebron, Jesse James, Trey Burton) depending on the depth of your league.

Saints | P.J. Williams carted off    Sun Sep 18, 01:47 PM

New Orleans Saints CB P.J. Williams (head) was carted off the field during the team's Week 2 game and is being evaluated for a concussion.

Footballguys view: Williams was down for a long time and the game was delayed for several minutes. The Saints secondary was already depleted. Williams has movement in his fingers and toes in a bit of good news.

Saints | Coby Fleener may see more time    Sat Sep 17, 07:29 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is expected to receive more snaps in Week 2 because of the injury to TE Josh Hill (ankle). Fleener may be asked to block more during the game.

Footballguys view: Fleener is not yet up to speed in the Saints offense. However, he's an athletic TE who can get open against LBs over the middle. We consider him a TE2 with upside in Week 2 against the Giants.

Saints | Jake Stoneburner joins Saints    Tue Sep 13, 07:18 PM

Free-agent TE Jake Stoneburner (Dolphins) was signed to the New Orleans Saints' practice squad Tuesday, Sept. 13.

Footballguys view: Stoneburner is an athletic TE who has bounced around the league. The Saints will take a look at him on the scout team.

Saints | C.J. Spiller released    Tue Sep 13, 05:27 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller was released Tuesday, Sept. 13. He is fully healthy.

Footballguys view: This isn't a surprise given the fact that Spiller has never really been a good fit with the Saints offense. When healthy, Spiller has the ability to score from anywhere on the field as a runner or receiver. Spiller is going to get another chance in the NFL, but we're not going to rush to the waiver wire when he's picked up.

Saints | Pete Carmichael called plays for Saints    Tue Sep 13, 04:29 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton gave play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael for Week 1. Payton did say that the move is a 'week-to-week thing' and that he would still be involved in a handful of calls.

Footballguys view: The Saints offense was on point, but their defense couldn't stop the Raiders and that's why they lost in Week 1.

Saints | C.J. Spiller a healthy scratch in Week 1    Mon Sep 12, 02:06 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller was a healthy scratch in Week 1, according to head coach Sean Payton, who also stated RB Travaris Cadet was going to have a bigger role on offense and rookie Daniel Lasco was going to contribute more on special teams.

Footballguys view: So much for a fully healthy Spiller doing anything for the Saints. He's safe to drop for those who took him as a 'lottery ticket' pick.

Saints | Coby Fleener nearly invisible    Sun Sep 11, 10:27 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener did not get in on the track meet in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders, posting just one reception for six yards on four targets.

Footballguys view: Fleener was the subject of many reports that put him on a different page than the Drew Brees this summer and not gaining trust. The Week 1 result bore that out. Don't feel attached to him, although he could bounce back against the Giants defense that is very soft against tight ends, including giving up nine catches to Jason Witten today.

Saints | Mark Ingram quiet in opener    Sun Sep 11, 09:40 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Mark Ingram rushed 12 times for 58 yards in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders, and he posted two receptions for 29 yards on two targets.

Footballguys view: Ingram gave way to Travaris Cadet on a lot of passing down snaps and didn't get the red zone chances that usually buoy his stat lines, but the quality of the offense should rectify that soon. He's still a low RB1/strong RB2 heading into a matchup against the Giants defense that stacked up Zeke Elliott today.

Saints | Drew Brees starts season off right    Sun Sep 11, 09:40 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees completed 28 of his 42 pass attempts for 423 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 1 loss against the Oakland Raiders. Brees connected with WR Brandin Cooks on a 98-yard touchdown for the biggest play of the day.

Footballguys view: Brees has the best set of weapons he has had in a while, and his defense is getting worse if that is possible. He is looking like a top three fantasy quarterback this year, if not #1. Next week he faces the Giants team that beat him in a 52-49 shootout last year.

Saints | Brandin Cooks explodes in opener    Sun Sep 11, 09:39 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks posted six receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders. The highlight of the game was a 98-yard score in the second half. He was targeted nine times.

Footballguys view: Cooks' 98-yard score got Sean Smith benched and made many a fantasy day. He isn't far and away the #1 target in the Saints offense, but with quality weapons, he'll have a chance to break a long play or three every week and remain on the WR1 fringe.

Saints | Michael Thomas posted six receptions    Sun Sep 11, 09:39 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas hauled in six receptions for 58 yards in his regular season debut in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders, successfully converting all six of his targets.

Footballguys view: Thomas was a starter and heavily involved in the offense, although still behind Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead in downfield targets. He's worth carrying in all leagues and could earn starting consideration in fantasy leagues with more experience or an injury to another Saints wideout.

Saints | Willie Snead posts giant stat line    Sun Sep 11, 09:38 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead posted nine receptions for a career-high 172 yards and a touchdown in the Week 1 game against the Oakland Raiders.

Footballguys view: Snead started and ended hot, including a touchdown, which was the main thing missing from his fantasy profile. He's a strong WR2 heading into a matchup against the Giants, and may end up being an everyweek start this year.

Saints | Delvin Breaux has fractured leg    Sun Sep 11, 09:37 PM

Updating a previous report, it is feared New Orleans Saints CB Delvin Breaux (leg) suffered broken fibula in the Week 1 loss against the Oakland Raiders, a source said Sunday, Sept. 11.

Footballguys view: Breaux is far and away the Saints' best corner and he will miss significant time. The Saints face the Giants next week, and the last time those two teams met, the score was 52-49. Eli Manning is looking like a great Week 2 play.

Saints | Delvin Breaux carted off    Sun Sep 11, 04:03 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Delvin Breaux (undisclosed) was carted off the field during the team's Week 1 game after suffering an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: Breaux is the best corner in a weak secondary. 35-34 is going to be a typical score in Saints games this year.

Saints | Josh Hill leaves game    Sun Sep 11, 02:41 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill (leg) suffered a leg injury during the team's Week 1 game and is considered questionable to return.

Saints | C.J. Spiller inactive    Sun Sep 11, 12:40 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has been declared inactive for the team's Week 1 game.

Footballguys view: The Saints have six running backs on the roster, but Spiller is the only inactive one. His contributions as a receiver and returner were not enticing enough to make him active over Travaris Cadet and Marcus Murphy. It looks like Spiller is not worth a roster spot in redraft leagues despite a hopeful and injury-free summer.

Saints | Week 1 Inactives    Sun Sep 11, 11:45 AM

The New Orleans Saints have declared RB C.J. Spiller, TE Chris Manhertz, LB Dannell Ellerbe, OG Landon Turner, DE Obum Gwacham, CB Sterling Moore, WR Tommylee Lewis inactive for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Spiller is a surprise scratch here after the Saints used him a lot in Week 3 of the preseason. He's healthy according to all reports, so perhaps the Saints are souring on him after giving him a 1.55 million roster bonus in the offseason.

Saints | Michael Thomas likely to play    Sun Sep 11, 09:58 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (ankle) is expected to play in Week 1's game against the Oakland Raiders Sunday, Sept. 11, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a boom/bust WR3/Flex. His ankle injury casts a small shadow over his outlook this week, but he should have the best matchup of the Saints wide receivers when he lines up in the slot, and his size should make him a preferred red zone option.

Saints | Michael Thomas questionable    Fri Sep 9, 05:57 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 9, and is listed as questionable for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Most reports have him playing on Sunday, and he has a good matchup if he mostly lines up in the slot against DJ Hayden. Consider him a boom/bust WR3/Flex that requires a Sunday morning check-in before being in your lineup.

Saints | More on Drew Brees' deal    Fri Sep 9, 10:23 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees' new deal includes $44 million guaranteed and a $30 million signing bonus. He has a base salary of $1 million in 2016 with a $17.25 million cap hit and a $19 million cap hit next year.

Saints | Michael Thomas dealing with ankle injury    Thu Sep 8, 10:09 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas (ankle) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 8.

Footballguys view: Thomas tweaked his ankle in practice Wednesday. If he can get in a full practice Friday, we'll feel safe playing him as a what the heck flex or even a WR3 in deeper leagues, but if he remains limited, he'll be listed as questionable. Coby Fleener and Willie Snead would benefit if Thomas is out Sunday.

Saints | Drew Brees receives extension    Wed Sep 7, 03:27 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has agreed to a new five-year contract extension with the Saints Wednesday, Sept. 7, but the contract will automatically void after two seasons. Brees will receive $44.25 million guaranteed over the next two seasons.

Footballguys view: Brees will be a Saint for at least next year, which is great for the fantasy value of every player on the New Orleans roster. He has a chance to be a top three quarterback this year even though he often went outside of the top five in drafts.
