Saints | Nick Fairley seeking big money    Thu Feb 23, 07:57 PM

New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley will be 'searching for someone willing to pay $10 million per year on average' in free agency, according to Larry Holder of The Times-Picayune. The Saints likely wouldn't go that high, but would make a play for him if the market comes down to around $6 million per year.

Saints | Brandin Cooks likely to remain in Big Easy    Tue Feb 21, 12:38 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks is 'absolutely' expected to remain with the team in 2017, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: There was some buzz about Cooks being traded, but that seems to have died down. The final year of his rookie contract is 2017, but the Saints could pick up his fifth-year option to keep him in New Orleans through 2018. We imagine they'll do that in the near future.

Saints | Nick Fairley to test free agency    Sun Feb 12, 11:12 AM

New Orleans Saints DT Nick Fairley will test the open market before considering a new deal with the club once free agency begins next month.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Lions in 2011, Fairley signed a one-year deal with the Saints last year to rehab his stock after a poor showing with the Rams in 2015. This past season, Fairley played in 16 games totaling 143 tackles and 6.5 sacks. The Patriots were sniffing around him before he went to the Saints, and there should be a few more teams lined up for Fairley's services after a strong showing in 2016.

Saints | New Orleans optimistic about Coby Fleener    Fri Feb 10, 04:42 PM

The New Orleans Saints believe TE Coby Fleener will be a bigger part of the offense in 2017 because he will be more comfortable with the offensive scheme and will continue to build a chemistry with QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: We'll believe it when we see it. Fleener was not a fit for the Saints offense in 2016, but he'll get another chance to prove himself. Fantasy owners should look at Fleener like a TE2 with potential.

Saints | Michael Thomas had memorable rookie year    Thu Feb 9, 08:20 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas posted the second-most receptions of any rookie receiver in NFL history this past season. He logged 92 catches, finishing only behind Detroit Lions WR Anquan Boldin, who recorded 101 receptions in his debut year back in 2003 with the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: Thomas has done a ton this year, and is a great fit with Brandin Cooks. We like him to continue playing at a high level next season, and believe he is unlikely to have a huge drop off, though the number of targets will likely fall a little.

Saints | Brandin Cooks' option should be exercised    Thu Feb 9, 01:02 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks is expected to have his fifth-year option picked up this offseason. He would receive $8 million in 2018 if the optioned is exercised.

Footballguys view: Naturally, we expected this. Cook has been a great addition to this offense and a big time target for Drew Brees, who is not going to want to see him go any time soon. We expect the Saints to use the extra year to come up with a long-term deal.

Saints | Jairus Byrd may require pay cut    Mon Feb 6, 11:25 AM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd will likely have to take a pay cut to remain with the Saints in 2017, in the opinion of beat writer Mike Triplett. He has a $7.8 million salary with an $11.2 million salary cap hit.

Footballguys view: Byrd was a surprising big ticket signing for the Saints defense in 2014, and he has been an all-time free agent to this point. He played his best football under the big contract last year, but he was still nowhere near worth his paycheck. If he hits the free agent market, Byrd could reunite with his father Gill Byrd, the new defensive backs coach in Buffalo, where his son played the best football of his career.

Saints | Sean Payton really likes DeShaun Watson    Fri Feb 3, 04:10 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said that Clemson QB Deshaun Watson 'appears to have all those things that we're looking for' and believes there's 'something special about him.' According to Payton, the Saints haven't seen 'any signs' of a potential decline for current starting QB Drew Brees, but acknowledged a transition will eventually have to come, and that 'the transaction may take place, not in the same year (Brees) is being replaced.'

Footballguys view: Brees is only signed for two more years and Watson could be there at #11 for the Saints. Getting a potential franchise quarterback outside of the top five picks is difficult and having two years to learn and watch a true professional like Brees can only help Watson's chances of success.

Saints | John Kuhn staying in New Orleans    Fri Feb 3, 12:07 PM

Impending free-agent FB John Kuhn will remain with the New Orleans Saints, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Kuhn reportedly got only an 80,000 dollar signing bonus, so he is far from a lock to make the team. He resumed his touchdown vulturing ways at times in New Orleans, so fantasy owners of Mark Ingram would not be sad to see him not make the final cut.

Saints | Drew Brees has a few seasons left    Thu Feb 2, 10:43 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said Thursday, Feb. 2, that he has a few seasons left in him.

Footballguys view: Brees is under contract for two more years after he signed a deal in September. His play hasn't shown signs of falling off even though he is 38, but we saw the cliff come up fast on Peyton Manning recently. Brees doesn't have the neck issue that shortened Manning's career, but he has had shoulder issues in the past.

Saints | Bradford Banta hired by Saints    Tue Jan 31, 11:27 AM

Former Washington Redskins assistant coach Bradford Banta was hired by the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, Jan. 31, as special teams coach.

Footballguys view: Banta is a former long snapper and he has served as an assistant special teams coach for two franchises. They have now filled three of the five positions they opened up in January in a coaching staff shakeup under Sean Payton.

Saints | Curtis Johnson hired by Saints    Tue Jan 31, 10:36 AM

Former Chicago Bears wide receivers coach Curtis Johnson was hired by the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, Jan. 31, to serve in the same role.

Footballguys view: Johnson replaces John Morton, who was hired by the Jets to be their offensive coordinator earlier this month. He was the WR coach for the Saints from 2006-2011 before leaving to become the head coach at Tulane. This won't help the development of Kevin White, who has struggled to get and stay on the floor after being the 2015 #7 overall pick.

Saints | Mike Nolan hired by Saints    Mon Jan 30, 05:45 PM

Former Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Mike Nolan was hired by the New Orleans Saints as linebackers coach Monday, Jan. 30.

Footballguys view: The Saints purged their staff of five assistants earlier this month, including a few who had been with Sean Payton since the beginning of his stint in New Orleans. Nolan is a very experienced coach and should help a Saints defense that has been floundering for years.

Saints | Tim Hightower set to be FA    Sat Jan 28, 03:52 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Tim Hightower will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Hightower has shown great resiliency during his pro career, and he's provided valuable veteran depth for the Saints over the last two years. He could always stay in New Orleans, and we're not sure he'll get much interest outside of The Big Easy.

Saints | Drew Brees had problems vs. TB    Fri Jan 27, 08:05 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees went 48-for-75 for 556 yards, one touchdown and three interceptions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this season.

Footballguys view: In the two games after each Buccaneers contest, Brees had over 700 yards passing with six touchdowns and only one interception combined. The Bucs secondary gave him a bit of trouble in 2016, but few other teams did.

Saints | NO not ready to give up on Stephone Anthony    Fri Jan 27, 12:18 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Stephone Anthony lost his job to James Laurinaitis in training camp and barely played in 2016 even after Laurinaitis was released midseason, playing only 133 snaps for the season before landing on the Reserve/Injured list. However, assistant general manager Jeff Ireland isn't ready to throw in the towel on him yet.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Anthony's pro career hasn't gone as planned. He only played 10 games this year, and his season ended in December due to a knee injury. The team hasn't given up on him yet, but they call it the "Not For Long" league for a reason. If Anthony can't impress this year, the team could move on in 2018.

Saints | Mark Ingram productive at home, on road    Wed Jan 25, 07:49 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram rushed for 514 yards and three touchdowns at home this season and rushed for 529 yards and three touchdowns on the road.

Footballguys view: It was a career year in overall yards (1,043) this season and he also saw an increase in yards per carry with 5.1 and his second highest total carries with 205. Tim Hightower ate into his carries with 133, and the split will likely continue whether it is with Hightower or some other second back. That will always cap Ingram's numbers a bit.

Saints | Drew Brees contract not an issue    Wed Jan 25, 12:50 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees' contract is not an issue, according to Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. Brees is entering the final year of his contract after signing a one-year extension leading up to the 2016 NFL season. Loomis praised Brees' high level of play and said he hasn't yet thought about why approaching Brees' contract this year will be different than last year.

Footballguys view: Brees has a $19 million cap number in 2017, and there's a whopping $37 million left in dead money. The Saints have a lot of improvements to make, and they currently have around $29.5 million in cap space for 2017. That's plenty of money for them to be active in the free agent market.

Saints | New Orleans signs Rashad Lawrence    Tue Jan 17, 08:34 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Rashad Lawrence was signed to a Reserve/Future deal Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Northwestern in 2014, Lawrence was originally picked up by Washington. He didn't make the team but wound up with the Bears where he would sign a futures contract for 2015. Lawrence was then added by the Jaguars and bounced on and off their practice squad during 2016. He was a dependable inside possession receiver in college, and Lawrence is not built to 'wow' with his skill set. We're not expecting much from him with the Saints, but it is a good destination for a receiver to wind up in.

Saints | Nick Fairley would like to return    Sat Jan 7, 02:31 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent DT Nick Fairley said he would like to re-sign with the Saints this offseason.

Footballguys view: It would make a lot of sense for the Saints to keep Fairley around. He had a career-best season in 2016 with the Saints. Fairley had a career-high 6.5 sacks and a career-high 22 quarterback hits. With incentives, Fairley ended up earning more than $4 million in 2016 on a one-year deal. We'll see if the Saints want to make a long-term commitment to him.

The New Orleans Saints signed QB Garrett Grayson, TEs Jake Stoneburner, Garrett Griffin, DT Ashaad Mabry DT Justin Zimmer, WR Jordan Williams and OG John Fullington to Reserve/Futures contracts Monday, Jan. 2.
