Saints | Consistency an issue for Michael Thomas    Sat Apr 30, 12:14 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has all the tools team's look for in an NFL receiver, according to a scout, but his consistency is a question mark. 'He's just so damn inconsistent,' the scout said. 'He could be the best blocker. He can crush people. He just doesn't do it all the time. He's got great catching range, all this and that. He also drops balls.'

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see where Thomas fits in, with Willie Snead and Brandin Cook already in the offense. He could play a role like former tight end Jimmy Graham did, with his size and athleticism a mismatch for linebackers.

Saints | Vonn Bell drafted by Saints    Fri Apr 29, 09:28 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Ohio State SS Vonn Bell with the No. 61 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Bell is an intriguing safety who can cover a receiver almost as well as some corners.

Saints | Michael Thomas taken by New Orleans    Fri Apr 29, 08:24 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Ohio State WR Michael Thomas with the No. 47 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a competitor who will go fight for a ball, and has a real "my ball" mentality. Drew Brees may use him as a replacement for the departed Jimmy Graham.

Saints | Vernon Hargreaves had Saints' interest    Fri Apr 29, 09:35 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB Vernon Hargreaves III had significant interest from the New Orleans Saints, who picked at No. 12, one slot before he was selected.

Footballguys view: The Bucs addressed the defense with one of the better corners in the class and this should help solidify a defense that needs to get back on track quickly this year.

Saints | Sheldon Rankins selected by Saints    Thu Apr 28, 09:38 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Louisville DE Sheldon Rankins with the 12th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Saints | Sheldon Rankins linked to Saints    Thu Apr 28, 01:26 PM

Louisville DT Sheldon Rankins has been linked to the New Orleans Saints in the first round.

Footballguys view: The Saints need defensive help, so we could totally see Rankins ending up with the Saints. An exceptionally productive player both as a bullrusher and edge rusher Rankins would be a great help to the defense.

Saints | Myles Jack an option for Saints?    Thu Apr 28, 10:18 AM

UCLA LB Myles Jack could have a suitor at No. 12 overall in the New Orleans Saints, who like him quite a bit.

Footballguys view: A lot of media folks like the fit. We do too and the Saints need an impact player on defense. They might be willing to risk his knee, especially as they have to think their championship window is closing as we draw towards the end of Drew Brees' career.

Saints | Drew Brees not close to the end    Thu Apr 28, 09:59 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees didn't put much stock into the reports the team was looking to trade up to land the No. 1 pick earlier this offseason and said he doesn't plan to retire any time soon. 'It wouldn't be the first time that I've been on a team where they took a quarterback in the first round to come take my position and I would take the exact same approach now that I did then, which is, it's my team, it's my job,' Brees said. 'I don't think there's any use in talking about it because I doubt it would happen. And if it did, I trust our organization. I trust Mickey (Loomis) and Sean (Payton). If there's somebody there that you feel like is going to be the future of our organization for years to come, then take him, but I don't plan on giving up my job anytime soon.'

Footballguys view: The Saints need to plan for life beyond Brees but both the team and Brees believe the aging quarterback isn't done yet. We think, if the offense clicks, Brees could be a solid QB1 in fantasy and at worst, if it doesn't, fantasy owners will have a really nice QB2 with upside.

Saints | NOLA in on Paxton Lynch?    Tue Apr 26, 10:07 AM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch could be an option for the New Orleans Saints in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Saints had talks to move up to No. 1 overall for a quarterback previously.

Footballguys view: There are going to be some surprises in the first round of the NFL draft. Lynch is considered the third QB in this draft class behind Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) and Jared Goff (California). The Saints are a team to watch to move up in the first round to grab Lynch.

Saints | Drew Brees wanted Josh Norman    Sat Apr 23, 03:04 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees was willing to amend his contract in order to acquire Washington Redskins CB Josh Norman.

Footballguys view: Brees knows the Saints need all the help they can on defense. Top QBs will often restructure deals just to get (or keep) quality players around them.

Free-agent WR Robert Meachem (Saints) will work out for the New Orleans Saints Friday, April 22, according to a source.

Footballguys view: If signed, this would be his third stint with the team. At 31-years old, Meachem was out of football last season. In 2014, he appeared in 11 games and caught seven passes for 114 yards.

Saints | Tim Lelito back with Saints    Thu Apr 21, 05:24 PM

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent OG Tim Lelito signed his tender offer and will return to the Saints Thursday, April 21. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Currently just one of two guards on the roster, they needed him in place long-term, even if that just means a few years.

Saints | Paxton Lynch in New Orleans    Thu Apr 14, 04:04 PM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch is visiting the New Orleans Saints Thursday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Lynch is taking a tour around the league as he's likely to be a first-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft. What's interesting is the Saints already have three QBs on the roster, and many thought last year's third-round pick Garrett Grayson would be their QB of the future when Drew Brees is done. If they select a QB in the draft..especially with a premium pick...then perhaps that's not the case.

Saints | Sign Griffin Neal    Sat Apr 9, 02:54 PM

Concordia College QB Griffin Neal signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints Saturday, April 9, according to his college head coach, Terry Horan. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: At 6'4" 220 pounds, Neal is a camp arm with intriguing skills. He went undrafted in 2015, but spent the season in Germany playing for the Hildesheim Invaders of the semi-professional German Football League. He's the Saints fourth QB behind Drew Brees, Luke McCown and Garrett Grayson. He will be competing for a spot on the practice squad if he can impress in camp.

Saints | Tim Hightower returning to Saints    Fri Apr 8, 12:38 PM

Free-agent RB Tim Hightower (Saints) has agreed to initial terms on a contract with the New Orleans Saints, according to a source.

Saints | Tim Hightower to meet with Saints    Fri Apr 1, 11:32 AM

Free-agent RB Tim Hightower (Saints) will meet with the New Orleans Saints this week.

Footballguys view: Hightower was an emergency option for the Saints last year, and he had surprising success. He went for about 100 all-purpose yards in each game (sometimes more) and scored a handful of touchdowns. The Saints could bring him back as valuable veteran depth in 2016.

Saints | Mark Ingram restructures    Wed Mar 30, 12:28 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram converted some of his base salary into a signing bonus Wednesday, March 30.. The restructure didn't include a pay cut or any new money. The Saints created $1.49 million in cap space for 2016 by converting $2.235 million of Ingram's $3 million salary into a signing bonus. They still will have to account for that $1.49 million in the future, but now it will be spread out evenly over the life of Ingram's contract through 2018.

Footballguys view: This could be in preparation to sign Drew Brees to a long-term extension. The Saints have to be happy with Ingram's contract and should make him the centerpiece of the backfield again this year.

Saints | Cameron Jordan restructures    Tue Mar 29, 08:45 AM

New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan restructured his contract Tuesday, March 29, to convert $2.735 million of his $3.5 million base salary into a signing bonus.

Footballguys view: The Saints needed to do something to clear enough cap room for DT Nick Fairley. This move should be enough to make that possible.

Saints | Nick Fairley signs with Saints    Mon Mar 28, 09:48 AM

Free-agent DT Nick Fairley (Rams) signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints Monday, March 28.

Footballguys view: Fairley was good in a rotational role for the Rams last year. The market was not kind to him, so he gets a chance to improve his stock this season with the Saints before hitting free agency again in 2017.

Saints | Josh Hill staying with Saints    Fri Mar 25, 04:15 PM

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent TE Josh Hill will remain with the Saints after they matched the offer sheet he signed with the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Hill has intriguing upside in dynasty leagues, but he certainly didn't flash as much as he could've last year. He was outplayed by TE Ben Watson in 2015, but with Watson moving on to the Ravens it opens up an opportunity. However, with the signing of TE Coby Fleener we may only see Hill as a reserve TE once again in 2016.

Saints | Tyler Ervin working out for Saints    Fri Mar 25, 02:08 PM

San Jose State RB Tyler Ervin will work out for the New Orleans Saints Friday, March 25. Ervin, a 5-foot-10, 192-pound back, had an impressive week at the Senior Bowl as a route runner and receiver out of the backfield, and he'd likely project as a possible satellite back for the Saints.

Footballguys view: Ervin is a speedy back who gets to top speed in a hurry. Even though he's not a big back, Ervin is a determined back between the tackles. He can at least be a change-of-pace back at the pro level, and we think Ervin is capable of carrying a starter's workload if called upon.

Saints | Drew Brees talks rekindled    Wed Mar 23, 10:56 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees' agents have renewed talks with the Saints on a four-year extension Wednesday, March 23. Brees has one year left on his deal.

Footballguys view: Brees was hurt early last year after uncertainty about his future in New Orleans dogged his offseason. He recovered to riff with his new receivers by the end of the season and return to fantasy prominence. He should be a top 6-8 QB pick at worst and good value in 2016 fantasy drafts.

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton announced he agreed to a five-year extension with the Saints Wednesday, March 23, that goes through the 2020 season.

Saints | Drew Brees confident in extension    Mon Mar 21, 07:42 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is confident he'll reach a contract extension with the Saints, and he wants to play for New Orleans for the rest of his career. 'So talks are ongoing, and I don't know if that is something that will be done next week or before the end of the year or next year or when. But obviously, I want to be a Saint for the rest of my career, and I think I've got a lot of good years left,' Brees said.

Footballguys view: He's in the final year of a five-year, $100 million deal and has a $30 million salary cap hit in 2016. Expect a new deal to be reached with Brees in order to lower that number.

Saints | Drew Brees to get $22 MM on new contract?    Sat Mar 19, 04:09 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees doesn't appear to be close to finalizing an extension with the team, but there is reason to believe his average salary will range somewhere between $22 to $23 million.

Footballguys view: Brees is on the books for $30 million this season, and that's a number the team is looking to lower. With his play still at a high level, extending Brees and lowering that cap hit to $23 million is a good and fair move.

Saints | Nick Fairley visiting    Thu Mar 17, 04:17 PM

Saints | Luke McCown returning    Thu Mar 10, 07:52 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown re-signed an undisclosed deal with the Saints Thursday, March 10.

Footballguys view: Wow. First Chafrles Woodson, then Peyton Manning and Calvin Johnson, now this. McCown had a few brief moments in the sun - and a great cell phone commercial - but was a perpetual backup. That said, we wish him luck in his future endeavors.

Saints | Coby Fleener moving to Saints    Wed Mar 9, 06:56 PM

Free-agent TE Coby Fleener (Colts) agreed to sign a five-year deal worth roughly $36 million with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, March 9, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints had to do something with Ben Watson signing with the Ravens. Fleener gets out of the TEBC with Dwayne Allen, and he should be the lead player at the position if he can beat out Josh Hill for the starting job with the Saints. In that offense, Fleener would have TE2 with upside value if he can stay healthy.
