Saints | Tim Lelito has chance to start    Sat May 23, 01:33 PM

New Orleans Saints OG Tim Lelito will have an opportunity to start at left guard in 2015. Lelito has had a few starts at right guard and center, but played at left guard in college.

Footballguys view: Lelito started two games last year, but he mostly played as a backup center for the Saints last year. With OG Ben Grubbs traded to the Kansas City Chiefs earlier this year, Lelito is the likely choice to replace him. A 2013 undrafted free agent out of Grand Valley State, Lelito has years of experience at guard.

Saints | Drew Brees wants long career    Fri May 22, 02:15 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he may not be able to play until he is 45 years old like he previously stated but wants to play as long as he can.

Footballguys view: Try not to spit out your coffee when you read "45" in this story. We could see Brees playing until he's around 40, but anything after that is a bit shaky. He's not quite the same player he used to be, and fantasy owners need to realize the changes on the offense for the 2015 season. This team could run more and pass less, making Brees a low-end QB1 for fantasy owners.

Saints | Andy Tanner placed on IR    Fri May 22, 02:24 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Andy Tanner cleared waivers and was placed on injured reserve Thursday, May 21.

Footballguys view: Undrafted in 2010, Tanner spent last season on Injured Reserve with an injury he suffered in training camp. He's been a practice squad player for the Saints, but Tanner has not yet played a game in the regular season. This latest injury could spell the end of his pro career.

Saints | Andrus Peat signs rookie deal    Thu May 21, 03:15 PM

New Orleans Saints OT Andrus Peat signed his rookie contract with the team, according to sources. Peat has a four-year deal worth $11.39 million with a signing bonus of $6.546 million included.

Footballguys view: This can only help Drew Brees avoid being hammered this season. Ultimately, it appears that the Saints are aiming to be more run-friendly, and Peat would also be a huge addition towards that end.

Saints | Two roster moves    Thu May 21, 11:10 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Andy Tanner was waived to make room for the addition of free-agent OG Mike McGlynn (Chiefs) Wednesday, May 20.

Footballguys view: This is merely a depth move. Tanner was unlikely to contribute much, if anything at all, while McGlynn is a a backup at best.

Saints | Drew Brees discusses his future    Thu May 21, 10:25 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees is entering his age-36 season and said playing until he is 45 years old might be 'overzealous.' Brees noted that '45 is a long way away.' He added, 'At different stages in your career, I just think you kind of reassess and reevaluate and try to set goals moving forward. It was just kind of one of those moments last year where my body felt great, felt like I had a great system in place with my training and my recovery and my diet and everything, gosh, why not?'

Footballguys view: The off-season moves the New Orleans Saints made point towards a shift in philosophy. It appears as if they will run the ball more and focus less on throwing as much as they did in the past. That might help Brees stick around for a longer career, but could cut down on his passing numbers. Brees' ADP is still as a top five quarterback (around the fifth round) but losing Jimmy Graham and Kenny Stills while it's obvious the run game is getting beefed up is a concern.

Saints | Josh Hill projected to start for Saints    Wed May 20, 03:21 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill is slated as the starting tight end this season with TE Jimmy Graham now in Seattle. TE Benjamin Watson could give Hill a run for his money, however.

Footballguys view: Watson isn't the same player he used to be while Hill is a player on the rise. His final year in college at Idaho State, Hill led the NCAA in receptions (70) for a tight end. He was an undrafted free agent for the Saints in 2013, and he's been working hard to impress in Graham's shadow. Hill only had 14 catches last year, but five of those were for touchdowns. He's a mid-range TE2 with low-end TE1 ability and opportunity.

Saints | Malcome Kennedy placed on IR    Tue May 19, 05:30 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Malcome Kennedy (undisclosed) was placed on Reserve/Injured Tuesday, May 19, after being waived/injured Monday, May 18.

Saints | Two roster moves made    Tue May 19, 03:01 PM

New Orleans Saints PK Shayne Graham was released Tuesday, May 19. Subsequently, free-agent WR Lance Lewis (49ers) was signed.

Footballguys view: Lewis, a 2012 undrafted free agent for Washington, spent last year on San Francisco's practice squad. The former East Carolina receiver is a good underneath receiver who is fearless when running routes over the middle.

Saints | Drew Brees not worried    Tue May 19, 12:29 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he is unconcerned that the Saints drafted QB Garrett Grayson, his heir apparent, in the third round of this year's draft. 'I'm worried about winning a championship,' Brees said. 'Trying to be the best player I can be, trying to be the leader that I can be, that applies to how can I help get the best out of everyone who is on the team.'

Footballguys view: Grayson is no threat to Brees, but he certainly looks like the team's developmental quarterback of the future. We love Grayson's ability to lead, use his eyes to manipulate the defense and attack the seams of a defense. He'll likely serve as the third-string quarterback this year. Behind Brees, we should see Luke McCown and Ryan Griffin compete to be the primary backup.

Saints | Malcome Kennedy waived/injured    Mon May 18, 08:07 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Malcome Kennedy (undisclosed) was waived/injured Monday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Kennedy has good size (205 pounds) for a possession receiver, but his speed and athleticism leave a lot to be desired.

Saints | Josh Morgan signs    Mon May 18, 07:50 AM

Free-agent WR Josh Morgan (Bears) signed with the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, May 17. Morgan was targeted just 19 times last year with 10 catches for 70 yards.

Footballguys view: Morgan ran 239 routes last year and moved the chains four times on his 10 receptions. He's barely hanging on in the league at this point in his career, and Morgan is no lock to make the Saints final roster.

Saints | Antonio Johnson signed    Sun May 17, 04:33 PM

The New Orleans Saints have signed undrafted free-agent OL Antonio Johnson (North Texas). In a corresponding move, they have released LB Stephon Sanders.

Footballguys view: Johnson had previously tried out for the New York Jets. He was with the Saints during rookie minicamp last week, and he must have done enough to warrant getting signed. At 6'5" 305 pounds, Johnson has good athleticism, missed only limited time due to injury and rarely gave up a sack for the Mean Green.

The New Orleans Saints have signed free-agent PK Zach Hocker (Dolphins).

Saints | Kyle Prater signed    Sun May 17, 03:51 PM

The New Orleans Saints have signed undrafted free-agent WR Kyle Prater (Northwestern), following a tryout during their rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Prater is a huge target, measuring in at 6'5" 235 pounds. In his final season at Northwestern, Prater caught 51 passes for 535 yards and two touchdowns. He spent last week at rookie minicamp with the Browns but now finds his way to the Saints. He started his college career at USC where he was coached by John Morton. Today, Morton is the wide receivers coach with the Saints. Prater never played up to his physical potential in college, but he's worth monitoring in super deep dynasty leagues.

Saints | Stephone Anthony signs deal    Wed May 13, 12:33 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Stephone Anthony signed a four-year deal with the team Tuesday, May 12, worth $7.731 million. The deal includes a $3.883 million signing bonus and $6.242 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Anthony was a bit of a surprise pick at the end of the first round this year. In college, Anthony was a consistent tackler with the ability to play sideline-to-sideline. He'll be tested in coverage as a pro, and Anthony will have to improve his diagnostic skills when playing against quarterbacks who effectively use their eyes to manipulate their defense.

Saints | Garrett Grayson signed    Mon May 11, 07:24 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Garrett Grayson signed a four-year deal with the team Monday, May 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Grayson could be the quarterback of the future for the Saints, and we love the pick. He is a savvy player who can diagnose defenses before the snap and adjust the play calls. Grayson uses his eyes to manipulate the defense, and he can keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. He will take some time and learn behind Drew Brees for a few years. Dynasty owners should watch his development closely.

Saints | Garrett Grayson picked in Round 3    Fri May 1, 10:16 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson in Round 3 of the NFL Draft (No. 75 overall) Friday, May 1.

Footballguys view: Footballguys own Andrew Garda and Cecil Lammey are at the draft in Chicago and witnessed a Saints fan throw his hat in disgust at this pick, but he is being foolish. The Saints need a successor for Brees and Grayson is the best quarterback (in their humble opinion) after Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. In three years both of our guys say that the hat-thrower will be cheering Grayson in a Grayson jersey.

Saints | Stephone Anthony selected 31st overall    Thu Apr 30, 11:25 PM

Clemson LB Stephone Anthony was selected 31st overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Anthony will bring plenty of speed to the Saints defense. He can play from sideline-to-sideline, and Anthony can cover tight ends over the middle. Anthony has the quick first step and closing burst to be an effective blitzer.

Saints | Andrus Peat selected 13th overall    Thu Apr 30, 09:35 PM

Stanford OT Andrus Peat was selected 13th overall by the New Orleans Saints in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: Great value for New Orleans who needs to protect Drew Brees and improve the offensive line. Peat can step in and start, is a solid pass and run blocker and should be a perfect fit with the Saints.

Saints | New Orleans high on Bryce Petty    Thu Apr 30, 09:10 AM

Baylor QB Bryce Petty is regarded as the best pure passer in the 2015 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: There's no doubt Petty has arm talent. However, there's a ton of questions surrounding his ability to even take a snap. At Baylor he looked good throwing to wide-open targets and rarely had to go through progressions. Petty should be a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Saints | Drew Brees expected to play for a while    Wed Apr 29, 05:03 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees isn't expected to be retiring anytime soon, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. 'I don't see the end for Drew Brees on the short-term horizon,' Loomis said. 'At least I certainly hope not. But it does take time for these quarterbacks to develop. And we're conscious of that.' Loomis could be hinting at the possibility of the Saints drafting a quarterback, perhaps as an heir apparent to Brees. The team has already worked out Baylor QB Bryce Petty.

Footballguys view: Brees is still the face of the franchise and most likely to retire a Saints despite some buzz to the contrary that started when Brees had a slow first few weeks of 2014 and then cratered at home at the end of the season.

Saints | Matt Jones visits    Fri Apr 24, 03:07 AM

Florida RB Matt Jones visited the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Jones is likely going to be a late-round pick. He's a downhill runner and does that very well, but that's about all he has in his arsenal. Jones has had fumbling issues, lacks top-end speed and isn't a great weapon in the pass game or in pass protection. Think of him as a poor man's Benjarvus Green-Ellis.

Saints | John Miller visits    Thu Apr 23, 03:05 AM

Louisville G John Miller visited the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Miller is a power player inside at guard. He has strong hands and can absolutely crush and bury opponents as a run-blocker. Miller is not fleet afoot, and he'll struggle to get to opponents at the second level. Look for him to be a third- or fourth-round pick.

Saints | Brandin Cooks spent time with QB    Wed Apr 22, 11:32 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks (knee) spent time training together with QB Drew Brees during the offseason in San Diego. 'Man, I love everything about him, his makeup, and then just his physical ability. I mean he's got all kinds of talent,' Brees said.

Footballguys view: We're excited about Cooks in his second season. The team is going to rely on him more than last year when his rookie season was cut short by injury. Cooks is an explosive playmaker and our leading candidate to have a breakout year from the group of second-year receivers.

Saints | Brandin Cooks set for big role    Sat Apr 18, 07:24 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks will be atop the depth chart with WR Marques Colston to enter the 2015 season.

Footballguys view: Cooks rookie season was cut short by a thumb injury, but he flashed playmaking ability before he was lost for the year in November. We like his run-after-the-catch ability and the fact that he'll make defenders miss in open space.

Saints | Greg Jennings leaves NO    Fri Apr 17, 12:41 PM

Free-agent WR Greg Jennings (Vikings) left his visit with the New Orleans Saints without a contract. Jennings is also considering the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens and Jacksonville Jaguars.

Footballguys view: We think the Miami Dolphins might show some interest in Jennings as well. He's a seasoned veteran who is getting more than a few teams interested. Jennings will take his time and find the right deal (and the right fit) in the near future.

Saints | Corey Wootton leaves without deal    Wed Apr 15, 10:52 PM

Free-agent DT Corey Wootton (Vikings) met with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, April 15, but he left without receiving a contract offer, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints want to improve their defensive line, and they could add Wooton at a later date. A part-time player with the Vikings last year, Wooton's best season came in 2012 when he had 27 tackles and seven sacks.

Saints | Mike Golic signs with New Orleans    Wed Apr 15, 10:33 AM

Free-agent OT Mike Golic (CFL) signed an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: Golic was undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2013, and he's bounced to a few different leagues between now and then. The son of ESPN's Mike Golic, we'll see him compete for a reserve spot on the Saints roster this offseason.

Saints | Anthony Spencer signs    Fri Apr 10, 01:09 PM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints Friday, April 10. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Spencer knows defensive coordinator Rob Ryan from their time together in Dallas and he could provide some pass rush punch if he is over 2013 microfracture surgery.

Saints | Joe Morgan re-signs with Saints    Fri Apr 3, 08:44 AM

Free-agent WR Joe Morgan re-signed with the New Orleans Saints Friday, April 3.

Footballguys view: Morgan had a rocky season with the Saints last year, including a two-game suspension, and he was cut in December. We still like his prospects in super deep dynasty leagues. He missed all of the 2013 season due to knee injuries, and he needs to be more assignment sound if he's ever going to play up to his potential as a pro.

Saints | Bryce Petty visits New Orleans    Thu Apr 2, 09:45 AM

Baylor QB Bryce Petty recently met with the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: The Saints could be looking for the heir apparent to Drew Brees. We're not in love with Petty's skill set. He played exclusively out of the shotgun at Baylor, and Petty struggled to take snaps from under center at the Senior Bowl earlier this year. He does not show the ability to go through progressions or make stick throws between defenders. Petty is a mid-round pick, and a larger project than people think.

Saints | Jahri Evans receives extension    Wed Apr 1, 12:05 PM

New Orleans Saints OG Jahri Evans signed a one-year contract extension Wednesday, April 1. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Evans originally had a $9.6 million cap number this season, so this extension was probably to free up some of that money. He's currently recovering from offseason wrist surgery, but Evans can play at a high level when healthy.

Saints | Kyle Wilson headed to New Orleans    Wed Apr 1, 11:25 AM

Free-agent CB Kyle Wilson (Jets) will sign with the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick out of Boise State in the 2010 NFL draft, Wilson struggled to impress during his time with the Jets. He needed a fresh start after disappointing with his first team. With the Saints, Wilson will get a chance to prove that he can be a decent slot corner.

Saints | Sean Payton high on C.J. Spiller    Thu Mar 26, 01:11 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller received some praise from head coach Sean Payton after the team was surprised to be able to land him in free agency. 'His cutup is unbelievable,' Payton said of Spiller. 'And I'm not talking about last season because I think it became challenging, but you go back a couple of years and start looking at his screen reel, a sweep reel, a return reel.'

Footballguys view: Spiller will fill in the Darren Sproles/Reggie Bush role and we actually think he could put up some nice PPR numbers while he's at it. Don't count on RB1 numbers, but some nice RB2 numbers are likely.

Saints | NO considered Reggie Bush    Thu Mar 26, 01:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Reggie Bush was considered by the New Orleans Saints before he agreed with the Niners, according to Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: While Bush might have been a decent fit 'back home' we think the fit with the 49ers could be a good one as well. While we don't see him as an every down back, he should be a solid passing down back and accrue some nice PPR points as well. A low end RB2 or a good RB3 sound about right for Bush.

Saints | Anthony Spencer visited team    Thu Mar 26, 07:46 AM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) visited the New Orleans Saints this week, but Saints head coach Sean Payton told reporters there have been no contract talks with Spencer.

Footballguys view: Spencer has underachieved for a long time, but even so it's surprising how little interest there seems to be. Perhaps his asking price is high. More than likely he finds a home where he will rotate in on the edge, rather than a full time position.

Saints | Marcus Mariota won't go to Saints    Wed Mar 25, 04:50 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota isn't an option for the New Orleans Saints in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton said the Saints will not move up in the first round in order to select Mariota.

Footballguys view: The Saints would have to move up in the draft if they want Mariota. Payton also said there wasn't 'one iota' of truth to rumors that New Orleans is looking to trade QB Drew Brees.

Saints | Josh Hill expected to have bigger role    Wed Mar 25, 10:52 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Josh Hill is expected to have a bigger role in the offense in 2015. Head coach Sean Payton has mentioned him quite a bit since they traded TE Jimmy Graham to the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners should be over the moon with Hill on their roster. In his final year of college at Idaho State, Hill led the nation in receptions for a tight end (72). He's flashed a bit for the Saints over the last couple of years, and now he'll likely have a large role for the offense.

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) is fully recovered from a torn meniscus in his knee that caused him to sit out most of 2014, according to general manager Mickey Loomis.

Footballguys view: This news has to make the Saints happy. They paid a hefty price for him last offseason, then he was out for almost the entire year. Their defense will be immediately better with Byrd at full strength.

Saints | Drew Brees not on trade block    Mon Mar 23, 01:12 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees will not be traded, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Recent speculation said that Brees may be on the trade block after his favorite target, TE Jimmy Graham, was dealt to the Seattle Seahawks. 'Anybody who thinks we're trading Drew Brees, that's just not true,' Loomis told USA TODAY Sports. Brees threw for 33 touchdowns and 17 interceptions in 2014 while completing 69.2% of his passes for a league-high 4,952 yards.

Footballguys view: We have to think the Saints would entertain offers if the price was right. Brees is not quite what he used to be, but he can still play at a high level. This isn't a strong draft class, and the Saints aren't in any position to snare one of the top two quarterbacks in the draft. Brees is their best option.

Saints | Bryce Harris re-signs for a year    Sat Mar 21, 12:44 AM

The New Orleans Saints re-signed OT Bryce Harris to a one-year contract Friday, March 20, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Harris gives the Saints a swing tackle who has started at both left and right tackle. He'll primarily contribute on special teams.

New Orleans Saints CB Keenan Lewis restructured his deal to put the team $1.7 million under the salary cap. An additional $10.4 million of his contract has been guaranteed, according to a source. The Saints converted portions of his 2015 and 2016 base salaries into signing bonuses, dropping his 2015 base salary from $1.8 million to $850,000 and his 2016 base salary from $4.25 million to $2.7 million.   Saints | Drew Brees a trade option?    Mon Mar 16, 06:20 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees might not be off limits in a trade this offseason that has already seen the team trade TE Jimmy Graham, OG Ben Grubbs and WR Kenny Stills. The Saints have begun to think about life after Brees, and a report surfaced late last year that the team is likely to 'draft a quarterback highly this year.'

Footballguys view: We're not going to be surprised by anything the NFL throws at us the rest of this offseason. Last week was the craziest week in NFL offseason history. Brees may not be what he once was, but there would be teams lined up around the block to add him via trade if in fact he is available.

Saints | Sign Brandon Browner    Thu Mar 12, 02:37 PM

Free-agent CB Brandon Browner (Patriots) signed a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: Suddenly Patriots have an issue in the secondary while New Orleans starts spending some of the money they saved from trading Jimmy Graham to help improve the defense. Browner played well for New England last year when he returned from suspension and (as long as he stays out of trouble) should be a great addition.
