Saints | Mike Westhoff's status up in the air    Sat May 26, 10:11 AM

It remains uncertain if special teams coach Mike Westhoff will return to the New Orleans Saints for the 2018 season, since he is still recovering from leg surgery performed shortly after the end of last season. Head coach Sean Payton said that if Westhoff decides to return for another year, it likely wouldn't be until training camp. For now, Bradford Banta and Kevin O'Dea are sharing duties coaching special teams.

Saints | Cameron Meredith getting some work in     Fri May 25, 12:17 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) participated in some individual drills during OTAs on Thursday, May 24.

Footballguys view: This matches what Saints head coach Sean Payton has been saying about Meredith behind ahead of schedule. Meredith suffered an ACL injury in the third preseason game last year and missed the entire 2017 season. There's no need for the Saints to push him much until training camp gets here.

Saints | Taysom Hill in mix for backup role    Thu May 24, 09:21 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Taysom Hill will compete with QB Tom Savage and QB J.T. Barrett for the backup quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Hill is incredibly athletic and one of those deep sleeper quarterbacks we love monitoring in the deepest dynasty leagues. Savage and Barrett shouldn't provide too much competition. Sean Payton raves about Hill, so that's something to get your attention.

Saints | Marcus Davenport works with starters    Thu May 24, 04:36 PM

New Orleans Saints DE Marcus Davenport lined up with the first-team defense during organized team activities Thursday, May 24, because of injuries to DEs Cameron Jordan (foot) and Alex Okafor (Achilles').

Saints | Mark Ingram to report to minicamp    Thu May 24, 01:40 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is expected to report to the mandatory three-day minicamp in June despite being suspended for the first four games of the regular season, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: We're going to see just how much of a load Alvin Kamara can carry, aren't we? He's going to be featured and then some while Ingram is out suspended. Kamara is a top ten overall fantasy pick at this point in the offseason.

Saints | Cameron Meredith ahead of schedule    Thu May 24, 01:32 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Cameron Meredith (knee) is way ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to head coach Sean Payton. Payton added that the Saints have a 'clear vision' on how they want to use their new receiver.

Footballguys view: Meredith will likely be featured in three-wide sets, which in the New Orleans offense could produce some decent numbers and make him a reasonable bye week filler with upside. He's got a current ADP of WR44 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Tre'Quan Smith signs deal    Mon May 21, 01:25 PM

New Orleans Saints third-round draft choice WR Tre'Quan Smith signed a four-year deal with the Saints Monday, May 21. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: While in college at UCF, Smith drew comparisons to Allen Robinson (Bears) in the scouting community. Smith has strong hands and the concentration to win against tight coverage - especially in the red zone as noted by his 13 receiving touchdowns in 2017. While not a burner, Smith can accelerate quickly and presents a large target for his quarterback. Smith is buried on the depth chart right now, and he's competing for the 4th spot at the WR position behind Michael Thomas, Ted Ginn and Cameron Meredith. We love his upside in dynasty formats.

Saints | Deon Yelder deal includes guaranteed money    Sun May 20, 11:36 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints TE Deon Yelder's contract includes $90,000 in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Some out there think the Saints got a steal in adding Yelder as a priority free agent after the 2018 NFL draft. He was a prep basketball star and has only one year of production at Western Kentucky. Like most basketball converts, Yelder knows how to use his body to shield defenders away from the ball and he can play 'above the rim' on passes tossed up high. Also, like most inexperienced basketball converts, Yelder's route running leaves a lot to be desired. We'll be monitoring him in super deep dynasty leagues.

Saints | Nate Wozniak switching positions    Sat May 19, 03:45 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Nate Wozniak will be used as an offensive tackle with the Saints even though he has only played tight end during his football career. He weighed 283 pounds during the rookie minicamp and has a target goal of around 300 pounds.

Footballguys view: Wozniak isn't much of a receiver, but he's listed at 6'9" 283 pounds. That's a good start if he wants to play tackle in the NFL. It's a transition we've seen before as years ago Jason Peters went from playing tight end in college to being one of the best offensive tackles in the game. Wozniak obviously has his work cut out for him, and is highly unlikely to turn out the way Peters did in the NFL.

Saints | New Orleans adding Jay Bromley    Mon May 14, 02:53 PM

Free-agent DT Jay Bromley (Giants) will be signing with the New Orleans Saints Monday, May 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick of the Giants in 2014, Bromley has always worked as a reserve player in the rotation on the defensive line. That's what he should continue doing for the Saints in 2018.

Saints | Adrian Peterson open to Saints return    Mon May 14, 02:23 PM

Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Cardinals) said he would be open to signing with the New Orleans Saints this offseason even though things did not work out between the two sides last season.

Footballguys view: It's just an odd fit...just like it was last year. The Saints have left the door open to a return for Peterson and now he's open with it as well. Peterson didn't fit the Saints offense and was traded away last October.

Saints | Michael Ola lands deal with New Orleans    Sun May 13, 05:19 PM

Saints | Jonathan Williams to fill the void?    Sat May 12, 10:49 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Jonathan Williams was one of the players head coach Sean Payton mentioned when discussing who will step up while RB Mark Ingram is serving his suspension.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick out of Arkansas in 2016, Williams lasted only one season with Buffalo. He spent 10 weeks on the Broncos practice squad in 2017 before getting dumped, but the Saints then scooped him up and kept him on the active roster. With Ingram suspended the first month of the year, we'll see if Williams can come through on the potential he still has.

Saints | Alvin Kamara won't be overworked    Sat May 12, 10:42 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara won't be overworked during RB Mark Ingram's suspension, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'By all means, we don't want to sit there and run the tread off the back with him early in the season because this thing it's a marathon, 16 games,' Payton said.

Footballguys view: Kamara is going to have a larger role in 2018, especially with Mark Ingram suspended the first four games of the year. We'll see him maintain a large role even when Ingram comes back in Week 5. The Saints will continue to use a rotation of backs behind Kamara, likely led by Jonathan Williams while Ingram is out.

Saints | Adrian Peterson an option for Saints?    Sat May 12, 04:40 PM

Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Cardinals) would be an option that New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton would consider if the team pursues a veteran running back.

Footballguys view: That's odd because Peterson was such an odd fit for the Saints last year. He only played four games with the Saints in 2017 before getting traded to the Cardinals in October last year. The Saints have Mark Ingram suspended for the first month of the 2018 season, but they should be more than fine with guys like Jonathan Williams backing up starter Alvin Kamara.

Saints | Mark Ingram's appeal denied    Wed May 9, 12:54 PM

Updating an earlier report, New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram's appeal of his four-game suspension has been heard and denied by the league, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The appeal was already denied before the suspension was handed down. Ingram, entering the final year of his contract, will miss the first month of the season. Alvin Kamara will be in line for a huge role. Monitor the backups behind those two as we're curious to see how Jonathan Williams does with an opportunity.

Saints | Mark Ingram appealing    Wed May 9, 10:56 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is appealing his four-game suspension. David Jones, of VIP Sports Management, says the substance that Ingram failed a drug test is 'permissible with the proper use exemption,' noting it was neither performance enhancing nor illegal. According to the NFLPA, players can take banned substances as long as they have an application for a therapeutic use exemption filled out by a physician and submitted to an independent administrator. It's unclear, though, if Ingram had the exemption.

Footballguys view: The appeal was already denied before the suspension was handed out. Ingram is going to miss the first month of the season, making Alvin Kamara an even more desirable fantasy running back.

Saints | John Theus reverts to IR    Tue May 8, 07:42 PM

New Orleans Saints OT John Theus (undisclosed) reverted to the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, May 8, after being waived/injured.

Saints | Mark Ingram suspended    Tue May 8, 04:11 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram has been suspended for the first four games of the 2018 season for violating the NFL's performance-enhancing drugs policy.

Footballguys view: Ingram is eligible to return in Week 5, so the Saints will turn to Alvin Kamara for an even larger role for the first month of the regular season. Behind Kamara, we're interested to see what Jonathan Williams can do with an opportunity. Keep an eye on this backfield in training camp to see how the pecking order behind Ingram and Kamara is established.

Saints | Coby Fleener let go    Mon May 7, 02:47 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener was released Monday, May 7, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall for quite some time. In fact, we're shocked it took this long but Fleener is still recovering from a concussion he sustained last year.

Saints | Coby Fleener not long for New Orleans?    Sun May 6, 12:09 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener's roster spot figures to be in jeopardy after the team added Benjamin Watson in free agency as well as Deon Yelder as an undrafted free agent, according to the Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Footballguys view: We're surprised he's lasted this long. Watson was added by the Saints back in March and here we are two months later and Fleener is still on the roster. He's been a bust in New Orleans where he could never make a connection with Drew Brees the way Jimmy Graham used to.

Saints | New Orleans may only keep two QBs    Sun May 6, 11:48 AM

The New Orleans Saints are considering keeping just two quarterbacks on their roster for the 2018 season if QB Taysom Hill is able to beat out QB Tom Savage for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: The Saints didn't select a quarterback in the 2018 NFL draft, largely due to the support that Hill has within the building. Sean Payton may be his biggest supporter, and reports indicate he loves Hill's game. Undrafted out of BYU in 2017, Hill originally signed with the Packers but did not make the final roster as a rookie. The Saints scooped him up, and he's even been active for them on special teams. Hill is an athletic quarterback who often draws Tony Romo comparisons. We're going to continue monitoring him in dynasty leagues.

Saints | Brandon Coleman financial details    Sun May 6, 11:22 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman's one-year deal is worth a maximum of $1 million and does not guarantee his spot on the roster.

Footballguys view: Coleman played as the slot receiver last year ahead of Willie Snead on the depth chart. Snead is gone, but Coleman moved down the depth chart with the addition of Cameron Meredith this offseason. Coleman will compete for a spot as the fourth WR on the depth chart.

Saints | J.T. Barrett contract update    Tue May 1, 01:52 PM

Updating a previous report, the New Orleans Saints agreed to a three-year contract with undrafted free-agent QB J.T. Barrett on Tuesday, May 1.

Footballguys view: Barrett is a dual-threat quarterback who may get a look at a different position. He's the fourth QB on the depth chart in New Orleans behind Drew Brees, Tom Savage and Taysom Hill.

Saints | Rick Leonard believes he is versatile    Mon Apr 30, 01:34 PM

New Orleans Saints OT Rick Leonard said he believes he can play either left tackle or right tackle even though he only played right tackle in college. He is also willing to play guard if needed.

Saints | J.T. Barrett invited to Saints camp    Mon Apr 30, 11:30 AM

Undrafted free-agent QB J.T. Barrett (Ohio State) will attend the New Orleans Saints' rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Barrett is going to be there on a tryout basis. He showed well at the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year, but his limitations as a passer prevented him from getting more than a rookie camp invite. We'll see if he can impress enough as a quarterback -- or an athlete -- to get a spot on the Saints for minicamp and OTAs.

Saints | Deon Yelder joining Saints    Sun Apr 29, 11:22 AM

Undrafted free-agent TE Deon Yelder (Western Kentucky) signed an undisclosed contract with the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Yelder got one of the biggest UDFA contracts in the league, and he's an intriguing player at a position of long-term need for the Saints. He's one to watch in deep TE premium dynasty leagues.

Saints | NO drafts Marcus Davenport 14th overall    Thu Apr 26, 09:32 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Texas-San Antonio DE Marcus Davenport with the 14th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Thursday, April 26.

Footballguys view: The Saints fooled everyone, given how much they traded to the Green Bay Packers to move up. People thought Lamar Jackson, but they went with a guy who had been rising up media draft boards the last few weeks. He's still working on his game, and was a stand up rusher at UTSA but can put his hands in the dirt.

Saints | NO looking at Marcus Davenport?    Thu Apr 26, 06:03 PM

Texas-San Antonio DE Marcus Davenport could be a target for the New Orleans Saints if the Saints decide to trade up in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft, in the opinion of SI.com's Albert Breer.

Footballguys view: A lot of folks assume a trade up by the Saints would be for a quarterback, but could they be looking to continuing shoring up their defense? Rumor has it Davenport could be going higher than expected, so perhaps they will have to move up to secure his services.

Saints | Willie Snead deal won't be matched    Mon Apr 23, 10:48 AM

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent WR Willie Snead's offer sheet with the Baltimore Ravens will not be matched by the Saints, a source said.

Footballguys view: That move was expected, especially after the Saints signed WR Cameron Meredith from the Bears. Snead will compete for snaps/targets behind new additions Michael Crabtree and John Brown. The Saints move forward with Michael Thomas, Ted Ginn and Meredith as their top trio of wideouts. Brandon Coleman will compete to be the team's No.4 wide receiver in 2018.

Saints | NO unlikely to match Willie Snead offer    Sat Apr 21, 02:55 PM

The New Orleans Saints do not plan on matching the offer restricted free-agent WR Willie Snead signed with the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: This was expected once the Saints were able to sign Bears RFA wide receiver Cameron Meredith earlier this month. Snead will go to the Ravens where they've got a new-look WR corps. He should compete for snaps/targets in a trio of receivers that include Michael Crabtree and John Brown.

Saints | NO works out two QB prospects    Thu Apr 19, 05:10 PM

Richmond QB Kyle Lauletta and Washington State QB Luke Falk have worked out for the New Orleans Saints, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Saints need an a future quarterback and may not be in a position to grab a top one. So they can grab one with a more a value pick later and both of these are solid options.

Saints | Brandon Coleman returns to Saints    Wed Apr 18, 06:20 PM

Free-agent WR Brandon Coleman (Saints) re-signed with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, April 18, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Saints are absolutely stacked at the wide receiver position. Coleman was their primary slot receiver last year but the team didn't tender him as a restricted free agent. He returns to compete for the same spot, but there's now more talent around him. The addition of Cameron Meredith (and Willie Snead is still there) is going to make it difficult for a guy like Coleman to get many looks or snaps on offense in 2018.

Saints | Willie Snead reports    Mon Apr 16, 09:14 AM

New Orleans Saints restricted free-agent WR Willie Snead will report for workouts Monday, April 16, but he hasn't signed his tender yet.

Footballguys view: As a restricted free agent, Snead has until April 20th to sign his tender. The Saints just plucked RFA Cameron Meredith from the Bears last week, and that has clouded the future of Snead in New Orleans. They placed an original round tender on Snead, so the Saints can match any offer he gets but they would receive no compensation if the veteran receiver left in free agency.

Saints | Anthony Miller meets with Saints    Fri Apr 13, 08:35 PM

Memphis WR Anthony Miller recently had a pre-draft visit with the New Orleans Saints, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Miller is a playmaker who can work all three levels of the field. His hands are inconsistent as he'll sometimes focus on running after the catch (or an incoming hit) before securing the ball. Miller plays with a chip on his shoulder and he could make plays immediately as a no.3 WR as a rookie.
