Saints | Brandon Browner to be released    Fri Feb 5, 12:12 PM

Updating a previous item, New Orleans Saints CB Brandon Browner will be released by the team, according to sources. By league rules the Saints can't cut him until after the Super Bowl. Browner will cost $6.3 million against the salary cap in 2016 and is due $5 million in salary and bonuses, including $2.75 million fully guaranteed. New Orleans will save $950,000 in cap space and $2.25 million in cash if they wait until after March 9 to release him. Browner was flagged for 24 penalties (21 accepted) this year, which was the most by any player in a season since at least 2001.

Footballguys view: Browner was maybe the signature player in a pass defense that threatened to break records for futility in 2015. The Saints defense has a long way to go to get back to respectability when they improve by releasing high dollar signings.

Saints | No talks for Drew Brees yet    Thu Feb 4, 04:52 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said any conversations with the Saints regarding a contract extension have not happened yet.

Footballguys view: At this point, as Sean Payton remains in New Orleans, we don't expect the team to move on from Brees. Ultimately, we think Brees has a bounce-back season after the two sides come to terms with a reduced rate for his services.

Saints | Drew Brees still idle    Thu Feb 4, 10:23 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is still resting his torn plantar fascia in his right foot, but he's close to full strength.

Footballguys view: The Saints and Brees will have to work something out as it seems the quarterback is t going anywhere and should be healthy for next season.

Saints | Khiry Robinson jogging     Wed Feb 3, 06:32 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Khiry Robinson (leg) has been cleared for jogging. Robinson is recovering from a broken leg he suffered late last season.

Footballguys view: Robinson is a player to remember (and potentially snare) in dynasty leagues. If healthy, Robinson can be an explosive runner and receiver out of the backfield.

Saints | Sign Vick Ballard    Wed Feb 3, 06:09 PM

Free-agent RB Vick Ballard (Colts) signed a Reserve/Futures deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, Feb. 3.

Footballguys view: Ballard is a decent all-purpose back, but injuries and inconsistencies have derailed his pro career.

Saints | Dennis Allen remains with Saints    Tue Feb 2, 06:55 PM

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will remain in the same position for the 2016 season.

Footballguys view: Allen failed as head coach of the Raiders, but he's a good defensive coordinator. He took over for Rob Ryan in November and helped stop the bleeding (a bit) on the Saints defense. Allen could continue to get more from this defense, but this team needs to add better talent on that side of the ball to help Allen out.

Saints | Ben Watson wants to return    Mon Jan 25, 04:08 PM

New Orleans Saints impending free-agent TE Benjamin Watson said he would love to stay in New Orleans, adding that he has had good talks with owner Mickey Loomis and head coach Sean Payton about re-signing.

Footballguys view: A first-round draft pick in 2004 (Patriots), Watson had a career resurgence in 2015 with the Saints. He put up a career-best 825 yards receiving and tied a career high with six touchdown catches. Watson finished the year as the 7th-best fantasy tight end, and he would have to be considered a top-10 option in 2016 if he stays with the Saints.

Saints | Drew Brees could sign extension    Sat Jan 23, 01:51 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees could sign a multi-year extension this offseason and still save the Saints millions against their cap, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: Brees has a $30 million cap number in 2016, the final year of his current contract. We'd be shocked if he played with that number. Expect him to get an extension (and a lower cap hit) in the near future.

New Orleans Saints offensive line coach Bret Ingalls will not be retained in 2016.

Saints | Drew Brees not going anywhere    Thu Jan 14, 05:40 PM

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis reiterated that QB Drew Brees will remain with the organization. Brees turns 37 Friday, Jan. 15, and will count $30 million against the 2016 salary cap in the final year of his contract. Loomis said Brees won't be released or traded. The only thing undecided is whether Brees will play out the last year of his deal or if the Saints will look at an extension. Brees is due $20 million in salary and bonuses this year. New Orleans is projected to be around $10 million over the projected salary cap of $150 million.

Footballguys view: We knew Bree's would stay when it became clear Sean Payton would stay. Bree's has continued to put up yards but while we expect him to score more next year when he is healthy, we expect to continue to see an overall decline in his play.

Saints | Dennis Allen could remain DC    Wed Jan 6, 03:45 PM

New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen has a good chance to remain the defensive coordinator, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: Allen may have struggled as a head coach, but he can be a good defensive coordinator. He took over for Rob Ryan after he was fired from the Saints staff. With better talent, Allen should be able to structure a better defense.

Saints | Drew Brees still QB for Saints     Wed Jan 6, 03:32 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees should still be the starting quarterback under retained head coach Sean Payton, according to Payton.

Footballguys view: No doubt about it. Payton and Brees are tied to each other, and it's a wise move to keep both around going forward. It was a down year for the Saints in 2015, but with a better defense they should be able to compete for a spot in the 2016 postseason.

Saints | Sean Payton staying in New Orleans    Wed Jan 6, 02:48 PM

New Orleans head coach Sean Payton will remain with the team in 2016.

Footballguys view: With two years left on his deal, it's no surprise the team is keeping Payton around in 2016. After back-to-back seasons of 7-9, we could see Payton in a make-or-break year. The offense should stay the same with Drew Brees running the show at QB, but the defense needs a ton of changes (and a serious upgrade in talent).

Saints | Drew Brees won't need surgery    Tue Jan 5, 03:32 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot, shoulder) will not need surgery for the torn plantar fascia in his right heel or for the shoulder injury he suffered earlier this season. The plan is for Brees to rest four to six weeks before beginning football and training activity, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Great news for the veteran quarterback here. Just like with Peyton Manning, plantar fascia injuries just need time to heal....sometimes lots of time. We'll see Brees back in action for OTAs and minicamp with no setbacks or restrictions.

Saints | Sean Payton interested in two teams    Tue Jan 5, 02:49 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton has privately discussed his interest in an opening with the San Diego Chargers, and he's also let it be known that he's interested in the San Francisco 49ers head coaching opening.

Footballguys view: Reports have been swirling about the Saints wanting a second-round pick in exchange for Payton. We'll see if the Chargers or the 49ers would be willing to play that price to add him.

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead just missed the 1,000-yard mark Sunday, Jan. 3, in a 20-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons. Snead needed 51 yards to make the mark, but he finished with three catches and 35 yards.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees finished 32 of 42 for 323 yards and one touchdown in a 20-17 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Jan. 3.

Footballguys view: Brees' status seemed shaky at times this year, but he finished strong. Nothing is certain, but the smart money seems to be on keeping a franchise icon like Brees in New Orleans until he retires.

The New Orleans Saints have declared OT Andrus Peat, LB Dannell Ellerbe, QB Garrett Grayson, DT Kaleb Eulls, WR Marques Colston, TE RaShaun Allen, OT Terron Armstead inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Brandon Coleman will play more with Colston out. It's fair to ask if Colston has played his last snap as a Saint.

Saints | Toben Opurum promoted    Sat Jan 2, 04:49 PM

New Orleans Saints FB Toben Opurum was promoted from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Jan. 2. RB Kendall Hunter (undisclosed) was placed on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: Hunter only made it two games before getting hurt in practice earlier this week. He showed a lot of talent coming out of Oklahoma State years ago, but injuries and inconsistencies have crushed his pro career. He'll struggle to find a home in 2016.

Saints | C.J. Spiller done in New Orleans?    Thu Dec 31, 12:12 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a career-low 36 carries for 112 yards and 34 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games this year for the Saints, and he lacked burst in the open field. He signed a four-year, $16 million deal with $9 million guaranteed last offseason, and the Saints could save $3.25 million against the salary cap by cutting him before June 1.

Footballguys view: Spiller won't play this weekend. Mark Ingram is the main back and with the lack of production, we think that Spiller is likely looking for a new home soon.

Saints | Drew Brees feeling better    Wed Dec 30, 07:37 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) didn't take part in practice Wednesday, Dec. 30, but he said he feels better this week than where he was at this time last week.

Footballguys view: It's simply amazing what Brees was able to do last week with this foot injury. We like his chances of having a good game this week against the Falcons (on the road) in the season finale.

Saints | RaShaun Allen promoted    Tue Dec 29, 06:08 PM

Saints | Drew Brees doesn't see wholesale changes    Tue Dec 29, 12:07 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he doesn't see any scenario where he or head coach Sean Payton aren't back with the team next season.

Footballguys view: Always in motion is the future. Brees has a $30 million salary cap figure next season. If the Saints were to trade or release Brees, they would have to do it by Feb. 10, when $10.85 million of his salary becomes fully guaranteed.

New Orleans Saints TE Benjamin Watson (knee) will play in Week 16's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to multiple sources.

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees (foot) is expected to start Week 16's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, despite being listed as questionable on the injury report, according to a source.
