Saints | Travaris Cadet to see reduced role?    Sun Apr 30, 10:27 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Travaris Cadet will compete with RB Alvin Kamara for the third-down back role while RB Adrian Peterson and RB Mark Ingram serve as the traditional backs, according to beat writer Nick Underhill.

Saints | Alvin Kamara tabbed for third-down role    Sun Apr 30, 10:12 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Alvin Kamara will be used to create mismatches in the passing game, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. 'To fill that role with a player of his caliber, we're pretty excited about it,' Loomis said 'Obviously, we were. That's why we traded up to get him.'

Saints | Travin Dural joining the Saints    Sat Apr 29, 07:31 PM

Undrafted free-agent WR Travin Dural (LSU) signed an undisclosed contract with the New Orleans Saints, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Dural was dragged down by a poor LSU passing game, so the Saints might be able to mine something from him. He has a shot to make it as their fifth receiver or stick on the practice squad.

Saints | New Orleans wanted Patrick Mahomes    Sat Apr 29, 12:25 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was being targeted by the New Orleans Saints with the 11th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is a gunslinger, and it would be interesting to see how he'd fit in a timing-based offense under Sean Payton. The Chiefs must've found out the Saints were interested, and that's why they moved up to snare the young potential franchise quarterback.

Saints | New Orleans grabs Trey Hendrickson    Fri Apr 28, 11:32 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected DE Trey Hendrickson with the 103rd pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Showed an ability to rush off the edge in All Star games, but can he replicate it at the pro level? Has the dreaded 'short arms' but all his measurables are there otherwise.

Saints | Alex Anzalone drafted by New Orleans    Fri Apr 28, 10:13 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected LB Alex Anzalone with the 76th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The size, speed and athleticism are impressive, but he has healthy issues. If he's healthy he could be a three down linebacker.

Saints | New Orleans add Alvin Kamara    Fri Apr 28, 09:54 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Alvin Kamara with the 67th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: This is a good landing spot for Kamara. A guy who can do so many things out of the backfield, running or receiving, and he can slash defenses. He can be a successful runner even when the blocking isn't great. He's not instinctive as a runner though, and sometimes doesn't seem to have consistent vision. Kamara should be a nice companion to what Adrian Peterson can do in the backfield.

Saints | New Orleans selects Marcus Williams    Fri Apr 28, 08:01 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Utah S Marcus A. Williams with the No. 42 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: More secondary help for the Saints, who are desperately trying to fix the defense. The worst pass defense in the NFL is getting better.

Saints | New Orleans still open to trade for CB    Fri Apr 28, 01:56 PM

New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton allowed for the possibility the Saints would still consider a trade for New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler or Los Angeles Rams CB Trumaine Johnson despite selecting Ohio State CB Marshon Lattimore in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft on Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: You can't have too many defensive backs, that's for sure. We're not sure we see a trade coming, but there's been so much movement, Butler could end up in a trade involving picks where he's almost an afterthought.

Saints | DeShone Kizer on New Orleans' radar?    Fri Apr 28, 01:44 PM

Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer is 'in play' for the New Orleans Saints, who hold the No. 42 selection in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft on Friday, April 28, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: The Saints know Drew Brees is coming to the end of his career and they need to start looking past him. Kizer has some problems (although clearly confidence isn't one of them) but a year or two behind Brees might make a huge difference for him.

Saints | Ryan Ramczyk selected by the Saints    Thu Apr 27, 11:45 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Wisconsin OT Ryan Ramczyk with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: The Saints get a guy many thought was the best offensive tackle in a weak top of the class, and will be in good shape protecting Drew Brees for a long time to come if he pans out. He only started one year, but his technique is very good and his athleticism allows him to start early on at the left tackle position.

Saints | Marshon Lattimore selected by the Saints    Thu Apr 27, 09:28 PM

The New Orleans Saints selected Ohio State CB Marshon Lattimore with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: This is ridiculous value and might kill the Malcolm Butler trade rumors. The Saints get the unquestioned top cornerback in the Draft and it isn't close. Maybe the one-year starting scared people, but his ball-skills and athleticism should have quieted those. New Orleans needed a corner and they got a great one.

Saints | No recent talks about Malcolm Butler    Wed Apr 26, 07:44 PM

New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said he has not had any recent talks with the New England Patriots about the possibility of acquiring CB Malcolm Butler.

Footballguys view: This seemed like a more likely than not proposition during the last few months, but the buzz has gone quiet lately. Perhaps the Patriots are asking for too much - another early pick in addition to the #32 pick they shipped to New Orleans for Brandin Cooks.

Saints | Mark Ingram fine with Peterson addition    Wed Apr 26, 02:49 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram said he is fine with the team's signing of RB Adrian Peterson if his addition helps the team win. Ingram said he expected the team would add another running back and is not concerned about sharing playing time with Peterson.

Footballguys view: Ingram responded extremely well to basically being benched for Tim Hightower at one point last year, so he should get motivation from the signing of Peterson and understand that he's not going to be a 300 touch back in this backfield. His ADP will fall, but he'll still be worth a pick in the fifth-eighth round range at worst after having an early third round ADP before the Peterson signing.

Saints | Adrian Peterson will have clear role    Tue Apr 25, 06:36 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Adrian Peterson will blend well with fellow RB Mark Ingram and will have a clear role in the Saints' offense, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: Tim Hightower got almost as many touches as Ingram from Week 8 on last year, and Peterson's pay is similar to Ingram, so it's not a stretch to see a close to 50/50 committee with a receiving back like Travaris Cadet taking some touches. There won't be an RB1 in this backfield without injury, but Ingram was efficient enough in the second half of the season be an RB2 in close to a 50/50 committee last year. His ADP will be falling either way.

Saints | Adrian Peterson terms    Tue Apr 25, 08:41 AM

Updating an earlier report, New Orleans Saints RB Adrian Peterson landed a two-year, $7 million deal. He's guaranteed $3.5 million in 2017, which includes a $1 million salary and a $2.5 million signing bonus. The 2018 compensation is $3.5 million, and none of which is guaranteed. It includes $2.4 million in total roster bonuses (which includes a $750,000 roster bonus earned on third day of free agency plus $1.65 million in per-game roster bonuses), a $1.05 million salary and a $50,000 workout bonus.

Footballguys view: The Saints will use Peterson and Mark Ingram in a RBBC. Ingram should be the lead back, and he'll also be the receiving back as Peterson isn't much of an option on passing downs. We could see Peterson getting 200 or so touches this year as part of this committee. Last year it was Tim Hightower behind Ingram, and he ended up touching the ball 155 times.

Saints | Adrian Peterson joining Saints    Tue Apr 25, 08:12 AM

Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) has agreed to an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Tuesday, April 25.

Saints | Mark Ingram will be the starter     Mon Apr 24, 04:56 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram would still be the lead running back even if free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) signed with the Saints, according to The New Orleans Advocate's Nick Underhill.

Footballguys view: That makes sense, but if Peterson is added he's going to have a large role as well. The Saints rushed the ball over 400 times last year, and they could easily split those carries between Ingram and Peterson. Ingram would continue as a pass catching back as Peterson doesn't excel in that area.

Saints | Adrian Peterson nearing deal with Saints    Mon Apr 24, 03:41 PM

Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) is coming close to a deal with the New Orleans Saints that would pay him $3 million this year, according to sources. The deal is not done, but it is looking optimistic.

Footballguys view: Peterson will split time with Mark Ingram if/when added. He's not a receiving back, so Ingram should have more value in PPR leagues.

Saints | Malcolm Butler may not land with Saints    Mon Apr 24, 09:15 AM

New England Patriots restricted free-agent CB Malcolm Butler appears unlikely to be traded to the New Orleans Saints, who are leaning towards keeping their draft picks on top of having to sign Butler to a long-term deal.

Footballguys view: This Butler trade has been bandied about for some time now. The Saints have the Patriots 32nd pick in the first round since they traded away WR Brandin Cooks. Some speculated to get Butler, it would take the Saints surrendering that pick back to New England. Something may happen during the draft, but at this time it seems like the Saints are staying put and Butler is staying with the Patriots.

Saints | Malcolm Butler trade 'deadline' looming?    Sun Apr 23, 11:06 AM

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler is either going to get traded to the New Orleans Saints this week or probably not at all, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss, who believes a deal will essentially come down to whether the Saints are willing to trade their late first-round pick (No. 32) or a different package of a high second-rounder (No. 42) combined with another pick.

Saints | Malcolm Butler trade discussion continues    Fri Apr 21, 12:04 PM

New England Patriots CB Malcolm Butler continues to be at the center of trade talks with the New Orleans Saints, but the teams have yet to agree on trade compensation, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: The Butler trade is not done...and there's still a chance something happens before or during the 2017 NFL draft. Stay tuned.

New Orleans Saints CB P.J. Williams (concussion) is good to go after being on the Reserve/Injured list last season with a concussion. TE Josh Hill (fibula) is a limited participant in OTAs as he continues to recover from a broken fibula. TE Michael Hoomanawanui (ankle) is fully recovered from a high-ankle ailment last season, while S Erik Harris (knee) is expected to be a full participant in training camp after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last year.

Saints | Willie Snead present for OTAs    Mon Apr 17, 05:03 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead participated in organized team activities Monday, April 17, despite not yet signing his exclusive rights tender.

Footballguys view: He doesn't have much choice as an ERFA as he can choose to play for the Saints in 2017 or choose not to play football. Snead is not permitted to sign with any other team as the Saints did offer him the required one-year tender worth $615,000.

Saints | Two linebackers visit New Orleans    Sat Apr 15, 10:10 AM

Louisiana State LB Kendell Beckwith and Vanderbilt LB Zach Cunningham met with the New Orleans Saints last week.

Footballguys view: Cunningham is swift and does a good job in coverage using his length and burst to make plays. Beckwith is more of a physical player who will see his draft stock fall due to an ACL injury in bowl preparation last year. While Cunningham is likely to be a first-round pick, we could see Beckwith fall to the third or fourth round.

Saints | Leonard Fournette visits New Orleans    Sat Apr 15, 09:50 AM

Louisiana State RB Leonard Fournette was on hand for the New Orleans Saints' pro day Friday, April 14, although he did not take part in workouts, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints have the 11th pick in the first round, and we can't imagine a scenario where Fournette is available at that spot. In fact, he's likely the first running back off the board with teams like the Jaguars (4th) and Panthers (8th) waiting for him to be available.

Saints | Sean Payton talks Christian McCaffrey    Fri Apr 14, 03:14 PM

Stanford RB Christian McCaffrey has 'the ability to make people miss, but also to make tough yards in the pile,' according to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: McCaffrey is going to be a first-round pick, and there's a chance he goes off the board in the top 10. The Saints could use a weapon like McCaffrey (everyone could), but they're sitting there with the 11th pick.

Saints | 'Door open' for Adrian Peterson in Big Easy    Fri Apr 14, 01:59 PM

Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) reportedly had a good visit with the New Orleans Saints earlier this week. Although he left without a deal, the door isn't closed on something happening down the line, according to the New Orleans Advocate's Nick Underhill.

Footballguys view: There's no movement on Peterson at this moment, but that could change with the draft right around the corner. Peterson is a two-down banger and would be incredibly dangerous on an offense like the Saints.

Saints | Adrian Peterson will visit Saints    Thu Apr 6, 03:19 PM

Free-agent RB Adrian Peterson (Vikings) will meet with the New Orleans Saints next week.

Footballguys view: As we have said all along, Peterson looked really old prior to his injury last season and if he's really asking for starting running back dollars, he's nuts. Someone is likely willing to give him a reasonable one-year contract but he is not the back he was, and is likely going to be a backup or part time guy.

Saints | Luke McCown released    Wed Apr 5, 10:44 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown was released Wednesday, April 5, according to a source.

Saints | New Orleans scouting Adam Shaheen     Sun Apr 2, 09:05 PM

Ashland TE Adam Shaheen was put through drills by the coaching staff of the New Orleans Saints during his pro day workout.

Footballguys view: Shaheen is a helluva prospect at 6'6" 278 pounds. He's huge and has the speed/athleticism to hit the seam and create mismatches. Shaheen needs work as a blocker, but teams are going to be most interested in what he can do as a receiver.

Saints | Drew Brees wants to wait on contract talks    Sat Apr 1, 05:20 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he wants to wait until after the 2017 season before talking about a new contract with the Saints because he wants to focus on the season. 'I'm just so focused on this year, just being in the moment, not thinking about anything beyond this and taking every other year as it comes. But, also, we're building something here. We are building something. I feel like we have a window of opportunity,' Brees said.

Footballguys view: Recent reports indicate Brees wants to play until he's 45 years old. At 38 this season, Brees has the potential to hit 5,000 yards again as a passer. His production is not a question, but his price tag can be quite large and problematic.

Saints | Alvin Kamara works out for Saints    Fri Mar 31, 08:16 PM

Tennessee RB Alvin Kamara said he recently had a private workout with the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Kamara could be a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft, but the Saints have the 11th-overall pick and that's too high for him. The Tennessee runner has great strength and athleticism, but his vision is questionable...especially between the tackles. He is a touchdown hog and a sure-handed receiver.

Saints | Drew Brees hoping to play until he's 45    Fri Mar 31, 12:56 PM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees 'feels like' he'll be able to play until he's 45 years old, although he acknowledges he will need to take it one year at a time.

Footballguys view: Brees is following Tom Brady here. Both veteran QBs keep themselves in great shape and that could help both play well into their 40s. Even though Brees wants to play until he's 45, the Saints are a team we expect to select a rookie QB at some point in the 2017 NFL draft. They need to groom a young passer as an heir apparent behind Brees.

Saints | Ted Ginn to be used in clear way    Thu Mar 30, 11:29 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Ted Ginn Jr. will be used in what head coach Sean Payton considers a 'crystal clear' vision of how he should be used. 'I see him playing at flanker,' Payton said. 'I see him being a guy that can take the top off the coverage. I like what this guy does.'

Footballguys view: We don't expect a ton from Ginn, even if he has improved over the last few years. There's too much talent for him to see a lot of targets, and his role is likely to be limited even if it's well defined.

Saints | John Phillips re-signed    Wed Mar 29, 04:52 PM

Free-agent TE John Phillips (Saints) signed a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, March 29. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Saints | Malcolm Butler an option for Saints    Wed Mar 29, 10:08 AM

New England Patriots restricted free-agent CB Malcolm Butler has interest from the New Orleans Saints, who are willing to trade for him.

Footballguys view: This situation has been brewing for quite some time. The two teams made a deal earlier this offseason when the Saints sent WR Brandin Cooks to New England. Saints head coach Sean Payton said the team wouldn't sign Butler to an offer sheet and risk the 11th pick in the NFL draft.

Saints | Saints have no interest in Johnny Manziel    Tue Mar 28, 10:48 PM

The New Orleans Saints have 'no interest' in signing free-agent QB Johnny Manziel (Browns), according to a team source.

Footballguys view: The internet was ablaze when reports revealed that Saints coach Sean Payton had talked with Manziel some time around the Super Bowl. The Saints do need to think about a QB of the future when Drew Brees is done, but it doesn't seem like Manziel is that guy.
