  Saints | C.J. Spiller's reps limited    Fri Jul 29, 12:41 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had his repetitions reduced in practice Friday, July 29, which head coach Sean Payton said they will do with several veterans in training camp.

Footballguys view: Spiller's roster spot is not assured and even if he does make the team, his role will obviously be limited if the team doesn't trust him to stay healthy with full participation in camp while he's not nursing an injury. If it is concentrated in the passing game a la Darren Sproles, Spiller could still matter in fantasy leagues, but we'll believe it when we see it. He'll go down as one of the biggest teases in recent fantasy football history.

Saints | Drew Brees sticking to contract deadline     Fri Jul 29, 01:02 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said during training camp Thursday, July 28, he is sticking to his Week 1 contract extension deadline. 'My mind will be on the preparation, week to week, on the next opponent,' Brees said. 'If there's (a deal) to be done, it's between now and the season.'

Footballguys view: Brees is 37, so the Saints might not be eager to pay him the going rate of at least 15-20 million a year for a top-end starting quarterback or guarantee money in future years, but the quarterback market is empty, so they may not have a choice. The development of 2015 third-round pick Garrett Grayson this summer could be a key variable in these negotiations. Obviously, owners of Brees and any Saints skill player in dynasty leagues want this to get done.

Saints | Vincent Brown to be released    Wed Jul 27, 08:51 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Vincent Brown (calf) will be released from the Reserve/Injured list after the two sides agreed to an injury settlement, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We remember when Brown had a tremendous amount of upside and was going to tear it up in San Diego. He's been banged up, and that has been an issue, but he also has struggled to reach his potential.

Saints | Jairus Byrd passes physical    Wed Jul 27, 07:01 PM

New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (knee) was able to pass his physical when he reported for training camp, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: That's a good sign for Byrd..and for the Saints. His time with New Orleans has been marred by this knee problem, and Byrd has appeared in only 17 of a possible 32 contests with the Saints. The 29-year old needs to stay healthy and start producing like he did years ago when he was with the Bills.

Saints | Keenan Lewis close to full strength    Wed Jul 27, 06:53 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Keenan Lewis (hip) is close to 100% at this point, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: He's close to being full strength, but the Saints started him on the PUP list to begin training camp. All signs point to him being ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Saints | Hakeem Nicks signing with Saints    Wed Jul 27, 05:34 PM

Free-agent WR Hakeem Nicks (Giants) will sign a one-year deal with the New Orleans Saints, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We're a bit surprised with this signing, but the Saints just need some depth at the WR position. Nicks is no longer the player he used to be, and things fell off quickly for the 28-year old. He's not a lock for the 53-man roster, and Nicks is only the team's WR5 at best if he does make the team.

Saints | Vincent Brown has calf injury    Wed Jul 27, 02:26 AM

Updating a previous report, New Orleans Saints WR Vincent Brown (calf) was placed on Injured Reserve due to a calf injury.

Footballguys view: Brown's career has been knocked off track by injury. He was a fine route-runner with great hands coming out of San Diego State, but Brown wasn't fast/quick enough to sustain an injury and come back with the speed to excel in the NFL.

Saints | No talks between Saints, Drew Brees    Sat Jul 23, 11:46 AM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees said he has not had contract extension talks with the Saints in the past three months.

Footballguys view: With a $30 million cap hit in 2016, we're surprised something hasn't been done yet to extend Brees and lower that number. Brees said he would like to sign an extension at some point before the start of the regular season.

Saints | Michael Thomas to work as starter?    Wed Jul 20, 01:59 AM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has a big body and could be a stud receiver in the red zone. Many project him to be the team's No. 2 wideout behind WR Brandin Cooks.

Footballguys view: Thomas scored 18 TDs over the last two years, and his size makes him a potentially dominant red-zone threat in the NFL. He averaged 10.79 air-yards-per-target during his final season at Ohio State, and Thomas managed to pick up 271 yards after the catch and 130 of those yards also came after first contact. He'll be asked to run the full route tree in the NFL after mostly being used on quick outs and tunnel screens for the Buckeyes.

Saints | Erik Harris turning heads in NOLA    Tue Jul 19, 10:03 PM

New Orleans Saints S Erik Harris was working in a potato chip factory four years ago, but after landing a job with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League he met Saints CB Delvin Breaux. The latter talked up Harris to everyone in the organization, and the team liked what they saw enough to sign Harris. Now, he has played both safety spots while rotating in with the first-team defense during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. 'He's been a pleasant surprise,' head coach Sean Payton said.

Saints | Tim Hightower the backup?    Sun Jul 17, 08:13 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Tim Hightower is the best bet to serve as the primary backup for RB Mark Ingram, according to beat writer Nick Underhill.

Footballguys view: That makes sense as Hightower is a seasoned veteran who can play a similar role to Ingram in case of emergency. We feel C.J. Spiller will get more playing time as a change-of-pace back behind Ingram this year...provided he stays healthy. Both Hightower and Spiller are backs to target in the final few rounds of your draft.

Saints | Running backs fighting for roster spots    Sun Jul 17, 01:42 PM

New Orleans Saints RBs Travaris Cadet, Daniel Lasco and Marcus Murphy will all be battling for a spot on the final roster, with Cadet being the most likely to make the team.

Footballguys view: Cadet may have the edge due to his pro experience, but we like the idea of Lasco earning a spot on the 53-man roster. Lasco was an all-purpose back in college at Cal, and he does everything well. He's not a pile-pusher, but Lasco is an efficient runner who does a good job following his blocks. Lasco is also good on special teams. Even if he doesn't make the team, we feel the Saints should keep him around as a developmental prospect on the practice squad.

Saints | Sheldon Rankins may play every down    Fri Jul 15, 04:52 PM

New Orleans Saints DT Sheldon Rankins performed well during the team's minicamp this offseason and should have a chance to be on the field for all three downs in 2016.

Footballguys view: The Saints have made changed to the defense that should allow Rankins to perform to the best of his abilities. They're going to ask him to get upfield quickly and penetrate the pocket with his quickness and strength. Rankins is not the biggest defensive tackle, but a bit undersized at 299 pounds they won't ask him to cover two gaps and take on multiple blockers.

Saints | New Orleans not pushing for Anquan Boldin    Fri Jul 15, 03:15 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) received some interest from the New Orleans Saints earlier in the offseason, but the team never made him an offer and are not pushing to sign him at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We're interested to see where Boldin lands. The veteran WR showed last year with the 49ers that he's not washed up--yet. He may not be what he used to be, but Boldin has plenty of experience and can be more than just a 'depth' player. The Saints have a young group of WRs behind Brandin Cooks, so perhaps they'll explore adding Boldin later.

Saints | Anquan Boldin of interest to Saints    Thu Jul 14, 04:08 PM

Free-agent WR Anquan Boldin (49ers) has been pursued the strongest by the New Orleans Saints, according to a source. Boldin thinks highly of Saints wide receivers coach John Morton, who coached him with the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: This wouldn't help many Fantasy GMs as Boldin would get buried behind Brandin Cooks, Willie Snead and rookie Micheal Thomas. Boldin's 789 yards were solid considering what a disaster the 2015 49ers were, but that doesn't mean he'd find many targets in a crowded offense.

Saints | Coby Fleener could be second option    Wed Jul 13, 01:32 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener could be the second option in the passing game behind WR Brandin Cooks.

Footballguys view: We'd agree with that statement...on paper. With Ben Watson (Ravens) gone, the Saints need Fleener to be their new version of Jimmy Graham. The opportunity is there for him to be quite the valuable fantasy asset in 2016. Don't be surprised if Fleener finishes the year with career-best numbers.

Saints | Willie Snead high on totem pole    Tue Jul 12, 11:06 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Willie Snead had a big season in 2015, and the big question heading into 2016 is whether he loses snaps in two-receiver sets to WR Michael Thomas or another player. Beat writer Nick Underhill feels if Snead gets the same opportunities as last season he could have an even better season.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Ball State in 2014, Snead bounced around to a few teams before landing with the Saints. He had a breakout season in 2015, running 509 routes, getting targeted 102 times, catching 69 passes for 984 yards and three touchdowns. He'll face competition for routes/targets this year from the rookie Thomas or Brandon Coleman, but Snead has proven that he'll be ready for the challenge.

Saints | Brandin Cooks in line for big year    Tue Jul 12, 11:05 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandin Cooks managed 1,138 receiving yards last season, and beat writer Nick Underhill sets the floor at 1,200 yards heading into 2016, with Cooks possibly flirting with 1,500 yards if he can stay healthy and post a few big games.

Footballguys view: Cooks was the 12th rated fantasy receiver in 2015 as the leading receiver for the Saints, and this season he could break into the top 10. He was a stud for fantasy players last year, especially in the fantasy playoffs when he had 15 catches for almost 250 yards and two touchdowns in Week 15 and Week 16 combined. Added weapons like TE Coby Fleener and rookie WR Michael Thomas should help open things up for Cooks. We like him as a high-end WR2 with the upside to easily finish as a WR1 in 2016.

Saints | Reggie Bush won't land with Saints    Tue Jul 12, 09:41 AM

Free-agent RB Reggie Bush (49ers) has no interest from the New Orleans Saints, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: The Saints don't need a change-of-pace back as they already have C.J. Spiller in the fold. Last year was a bad year for Bush with the 49ers, and he's gotten little interest on the open market. Perhaps when injuries strike in training camp, Bush will get an offer from some team out there.

Saints | Darryl Tapp joins Saints    Wed Jul 6, 10:12 AM

Free-agent DE/LB Darryl Tapp (Lions) signed an undisclosed deal with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, July 6.

Footballguys view: We see Tapp as a rotational player in the front seven for the Saints defense. He'll work as a run-stuffer and can generate a bit of pressure on the QB from time to time.

Saints | Mark Ingram wants to show versatility     Mon Jul 4, 10:29 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram said his goal this year is to remain a factor in the passing game and force opposing defenses to account for him on every snap.

Footballguys view: Ingram is likely to be the lead back for the Saints on the ground, but we could see C.J. Spiller play as a change-of-pace role in 2016. Last year, Spiller wasn't healthy (or effective) so Ingram set a career-high with 50 catches. He could approach that number of catches again this year, but we just want to see him healthy for 16 games. Ingram hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2012 and was limited to just 12 contests in 2016.

Saints | Mark Ingram the go-to back when healthy    Sun Jul 3, 11:38 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram was on the field for 62.6% of the offensive snaps, the highest percentage of any running back on the roster, in the games he played in last year.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should be drooling over Ingram's prospects once again this year. Ingram had the 3rd-highest yards-after-contact-per-rush average of 2.27 yards behind only Thomas Rawls (2.68) and Carlos Hyde (2.30). The Saints power rusher should dominate on the ground once again where he can wear down opponents. He's proven when it's time to move the chains, and his first-down-per-rush percentage of 26.5 ranked fourth in the NFL (league average is 20.8 percent). His current ADP is RB10 (3.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Drew Brees confident in young receivers    Thu Jun 30, 12:19 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Drew Brees has confidence in his young corps of wide receivers led by WR Brandin Cooks and WR Willie Snead. 'I think when Drew is out there, he doesn't look at Brandin Cooks as a young player,' head coach Sean Payton said. 'I don't think he looks at Snead that way anymore because of the experience they've had. There's a combination there of guys that know what to do and how do they fit with the scheme that we're asking of them.'

Footballguys view: We are confident as well. Both Cooks and Snead were good last year and it's hard to see them as all that inexperienced. We think the passing offense is just fine. Right now we see Brees as a solid QB1, Cooks as a nice WR2 and Snead as a serviceable WR5 with upside.

Saints | Kyle Wilson has torn labrum    Mon Jun 27, 12:57 PM

New Orleans Saints CB Kyle Wilson (shoulder) was put on the Reserve/Injured list last week due to a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Footballguys view: The Saints signed Wilson to a one-year contract back in March. A first-round pick of the Jets in 2010, Wilson has been a bust in the NFL. He'll hit a likely cold free agent market in 2017 after this injury and his disappointing play.

Saints | Brandon Coleman has stiff competition    Wed Jun 22, 11:40 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Brandon Coleman needs a strong training camp and preseason to secure his roster spot, as the team drafted a similar type of receiver in WR Michael Thomas.

Footballguys view: Another beat writer predicted that Coleman would hold off Thomas and become the third wide receiver, but Thomas had a tremendous spring and riffed with Drew Brees from the word go, so Coleman might be unnecessary. If the Saints let him go, he should get interest from other teams, as Coleman's size/speed combination is hard to find, and "big slot" types are getting more use around the league.

Saints | Austin Johnson's job security unclear    Wed Jun 22, 11:40 PM

New Orleans Saints FB Austin Johnson is the only fullback on the roster currently. He has been on and off the roster recently, and his status heading into the season hinges on whether the team decides they need a fullback.

Saints | NOLA backup RB spots up for grabs    Wed Jun 22, 11:39 PM

New Orleans Saints RBs Travaris Cadet, Daniel Lasco, Marcus Murphy are likely to jockey for the spots behind RBs Mark Ingram, Tim Hightower and C.J. Spiller. Murphy and Lasco benefit special teams, with Murphy as a return man and Lasco for coverage. Cadet might also crack the roster as a runner, receiver and return man, and the final spot might come down to Cadet and Murphy and who is hotter in training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Murphy has receiving ability and could vie for the role CJ Spiller has been lackluster in so far in New Orleans. Lasco is a SPARQ freak who has top-end athleticism, but an injury-marred 2015 caused him to drop in the draft. Cadet has the most experience in the offense and could be the most productive in a receiving role. It looks like Tim Hightower will be the handcuff to Mark Ingram no matter who wins this fourth running back spot.

Saints | Garrett Grayson needs to show progress    Wed Jun 22, 11:38 PM

New Orleans Saints QB Garrett Grayson will have to earn the No. 3 job and show some real progress to keep him roster spot. He will be slotted behind QBs Drew Brees and Luke McCown. Since the team invested a third-round pick on Grayson last year as a developmental project, he is likely to stick around.

Saints | Dannell Ellerbe will be ready for camp    Sun Jun 19, 05:32 PM

New Orleans Saints LB Dannell Ellerbe (undisclosed) missed some practices this offseason because of undisclosed injuries but expects to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Over the last two seasons, Ellerbe has only played in seven games. During 2015 (his first year with the Saints), Ellerbe was limited by hip and toe injuries. He was forced to take a paycut earlier this offseason, but he could make an impact for the Saints this year if healthy.

Saints | Drew Brees likes Coby Fleener    Sat Jun 18, 03:47 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener has an uncanny ability to separate and get open, according to QB Drew Brees. 'There's always a place to throw the ball where he can get it,' Brees said. Fleener was targeted eight times during 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 drills this week -- the same number of targets as WRs Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should love Fleener if he can stay healthy and play up to his potential. With Ben Watson moving on to the Ravens in free agency, the Saints went out to add Fleener. Brees loves to involve the TE in the passing game, and this makes Fleener a low-end TE1 with upside in 2016. His current ADP is TE7 (7.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Michael Thomas impressive during workouts    Fri Jun 17, 04:35 PM

New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas made several impressive catches during offseason workouts and was willing to talk with QB Drew Brees after plays in order to learn things.

Footballguys view: Thomas is big, fast and physical. The second-round pick from Ohio State has natural hands and does a good job of winning at the point of the catch. Thomas could beat out Brandon Coleman for the team's WR3 job behind Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Saints | New Orleans backfield taking shape    Thu Jun 16, 07:45 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is the lead running back for the Saints, while RB Tim Hightower appears to be the backup, according to Larry Holder of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. RB C.J. Spiller holds the No. 3 spot.

Footballguys view: Ingram has come into his own, and we think he's a borderline RB1/RB2 and we could see him tipping 1,000 yards this year. Hightower finally got back into the league after some knee issues, but will be limited to whatever Ingram doesn't pick up. That means Hightower is unlikely to have any value save as a handcuff. Spiller might be the third back but he's going to have more work than Hightower, since he brings a little more variety to the table. Consider him only as depth though, as we don't expect him to do enough to warrant more than a bye-week fill-in, and his value is around RB7.

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's 'health and movement skills' were noticeably different, and he was a pleasant surprise during organized team activities, head coach Sean Payton said.

Footballguys view: Another day and more positive Spiller news. He's an interesting option to consider late in your PPR-league drafts. Spiller had a disappointing season in 2015, but on paper he makes for a great fit in the Saints high-powered offense.

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller said his skill set is built for the Saints' offense, and he believes he can flourish now that he is 100% healthy.

Footballguys view: On paper...or on Madden Ultimate Team...Spiller IS a great fit for the Saints offense. Last year was a terrible season for Spiller as he had only one game with more than 4 carries and only one game with more than 5 targets. Spiller said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Now healthy, we'll see if he can have a bounce-back season and be the weapon the Saints were hoping for when they signed him in free agency.

Saints | Surgery hindered C.J. Spiller    Sat Jun 11, 02:15 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Spiller said he wasn't able to cut and stop like he normally would and he lacked the explosion that he's known for. Spiller said last season is behind him now and that the road to recovery is looking bright.

Footballguys view: Spiller is an interesting player to take a flier on later in your drafts. The Saints offense is going to be a high-powered unit, and Spiller can make plays as an explosive runner in space or receiver out of the backfield. His current ADP of RB57 (13.07) in 12-team PPR leagues makes him an intriguing player to pick up and stash.

Saints | Brees impressed with Michael Thomas    Fri Jun 3, 11:13 AM

Updating previous reports, New Orleans Saints WR Michael Thomas has shown serious potential in the offense during organized team activities in the last two weeks. 'His improvement over these six practices has been awesome,' QB Drew Brees said. 'From day one until now, the same mistakes are not being made. He's on to the next set of challenges, and he's continuing to progress well.' What impressed Brees the most was Thomas' awareness to change his route on a third-down play when Brees gave the receiver a visual cue to do so. Thomas has primarily played the X-receiver position, which is typically aligned opposite the tight end with his feet at the line of scrimmage. The Saints selected Thomas with a desire to use him mainly as a receiving option in the red zone at 6-3.

Footballguys view: Message! Fantasy owners need to take note here. Thomas was a second-round pick for the Saints in the 2016 NFL draft, and he's got the upside to be a quality starter on the outside. He's a big player who can be physical at the point of the catch. Thomas is not a good route-runner, but his natural athleticism and great hands could push him past Brandon Coleman on the depth chart during his rookie season.
