49ers | Two players cleared to practice    Tue Jul 28, 06:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Darnell Dockett (knee) and SS Jimmie Ward (foot) have been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: Dockett missed all of last season for the Cardinals as he tore his ACL last August. The 49ers should ease the aging pass-rusher back into action. He should work as a part-time player when healthy. Ward flashed as a rookie last year before going down in the second half of 2014. He'll likely work as a nickel corner this year, but he's still got the upside to be a quality starter on the outside someday.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe had surgery    Tue Jul 28, 05:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) underwent surgery on his herniated disk July 15.

Footballguys view: Head coach Andy Reid said there's a chance Poe is able to return in the early part of the season depending on how he recovers. We'd say that's quite optimistic. Earlier reports indicated Poe could begin the season on the PUP list, forcing him out of the first six weeks of the year.

Saints | Brodrick Bunkley released    Tue Jul 28, 05:36 PM

New Orleans Saints DT Brodrick Bunkley (undisclosed) was released with a failed physical designation Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Bunkley tore his quad late last year, and he's still recovering from that injury. Once healthy, the 31-year old run-stuffer should get some interest.

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) is dealing with a herniated disk in his back and has had two epidurals. The extent of and timetable for the injury were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Chiefs here. Poe is likely to start the regular season on the PUP list, thus missing the first six week. We'll see if he's ready to return from this back injury after that. Jaye Howard will fill in for however long Poe is out.

Buccaneers | Sign Da'Quan Bowers    Mon Jul 27, 04:51 PM

Free-agent DE Da'Quan Bowers (Buccaneers) signed an undisclosed deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: The Buccaneers decided they needed better depth on the defensive line, and that's why Bowers was brought back. He sat on the open market with little to no interest since March. A second-round pick of the Bucs in 2011, Bowers has only seven sacks through four disappointing seasons. We'll see if he can win a reserve spot on the roster in 2015.

Broncos | Derek Wolfe suspended four games    Fri Jul 24, 01:48 PM

Denver Broncos DE Derek Wolfe was suspended four games by the NFL for testing positive for a performance enhancing drug. Wolfe said he took a medication he didn't know was banned.

Footballguys view: The Broncos were relying on Wolfe to be a starter this year under new defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Without him for the first month of the season, the Broncos will turn to Malik Jackson and Vance Walker as their starters at defensive end. Wolfe's run-stuffing ability could be missed while he's suspended.

Packers | Letroy Guion suspended    Thu Jul 23, 11:55 AM

Green Bay Packers DT Letroy Guion has been suspended three games Thursday, July 23, for his Feb. 3 arrest.

Footballguys view: Guion was suspended three games by the NFL after an offseason arrest where police seized more than $190,000 in cash, 357 grams of marijuana and an unloaded handgun in his truck. He paid a $5,000 fine on this charge in hopes of avoiding a suspension by the league. This report indicates that Guion plans to appeal the decision.

Vikings | Brian Robison's status uncertain    Wed Jul 22, 12:20 PM

Minnesota Vikings DE Brian Robison (pectoral) may not be able to fully participate when training camp starts since he is still recovering from a pectoral injury he suffered during the offseason.

Footballguys view: At 32 years old, Robison doesn't need every single rep. The team should be cautious with him during camp so that he'll be ready for the start of the regular season.

Steelers | Two could compete for NT job    Sun Jul 19, 09:48 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Daniel McCullers could push DT Steve McLendon for the starting nose tackle job during training camp.

Footballguys view: McLendon has started at nose tackle for the Steelers over the last two years. A sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in the 2014 NFL draft, we'll see if McCullers can challenge Mclendon for the starting job in training camp and the preseason.

  Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul's rehab a mystery    Tue Jul 14, 01:41 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (finger) still has had no formal contact with the team regarding his next step in rehab after having his right index finger amputated, according to a source. The recovery time from his injury is expected to be six weeks, and it's unknown if he'll train or workout in the meantime. Pierre-Paul has yet to practice in the new defense being installed by defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. He's yet to sign his $14.813 million franchise tender, but the Giants have no plans to rescind it, either. New York can put Pierre-Paul on the non-football injury list at the start of training camp if he signs the tender.

Footballguys view: If Pierre-Paul is on the NFI list, the Giants could choose not to pay him while he's out the first six weeks of the season. That move would cost him nearly $900,000 in salary. It doesn't make sense for Pierre-Paul to sign his franchise tender unless the Giants guarantee his salary.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul out of hospital    Tue Jul 14, 12:02 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) has been discharged from the hospital, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Now the road to recovery begins. According to our Dr. Jene Bramel, the missing index finger is unlikely to hold him back. However, the fractured thumb could be problematic. The recovery time is optimistically 6-8 weeks. We'll see if Pierre-Paul can get back on track during that time.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul waiting for physical?    Mon Jul 13, 08:27 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) plans to not sign his franchise tender until he can pass the team's physical. If Pierre-Paul signed now, the Giants could place him on the non-football injury list and avoid paying him for the first six games of the season.

Footballguys view: The amputated index finger may not be much of a problem when fully healed. However, his fractured thumb could prove to be problematic. That injury is not expected to be right until 6-8 weeks from now.

Browns | Phil Taylor expects to be full participant    Mon Jul 13, 06:36 PM

Cleveland Browns DT Phil Taylor (knee) said he will be able to fully participate once training camp begins. Taylor is coming off a major knee surgery he had last season.

Footballguys view: Taylor is a talented defensive tackle when healthy, but staying healthy has been a problem for him. Over the last three years, Taylor has not played a full 16-game season. He was limited to five games in 2014.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul could return by Week 1    Sat Jul 11, 01:53 PM

Cowboys | Greg Hardy's suspension reduced    Fri Jul 10, 02:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Greg Hardy's 10-game suspension was reduced to four games Friday, July 10, after he appealed the ruling.

Footballguys view: This is a good development for the Cowboys, who will now have Hardy for 12 games. Tom Brady's four-game suspension looks especially harsh when it is equal to Hardy's for domestic violence, so that could factor into the decision about the final length of Brady's suspension.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul looking to avoid NFI    Fri Jul 10, 10:09 AM

NFL | Ray McDonald charged with felony    Thu Jul 9, 02:33 PM

Free-agent DE Ray McDonald (Bears) has been charged with felony false imprisonment stemming from an domestic violence incident that involved a woman and an infant.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul could start on NFI    Wed Jul 8, 07:28 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) could begin the 2015 season on the non-football injury list if he does sign his one-year $14.8 million tender. Pierre-Paul wouldn't be able to return before Week 7 in that scenario, and he may opt to not sign the tender and choose his own return date.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul has finger amputated    Wed Jul 8, 07:11 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) had his right index finger amputated Wednesday, July 8, per medical charts obtained by ESPN.

Footballguys view: There is also more damage to his arm, and presumably his hand, so the book is still open on the short and long-term effects to Pierre-Paul. Pass rushers use their hands extensively to attack and fend off blockers, so extensive issues with one hand will make Pierre-Paul's game take a hit for sure. Meanwhile, someone in that hospital committed a major HIPAA violation that will certainly be looked into and punished.

Giants | No meeting with Jason Pierre-Paul    Wed Jul 8, 01:36 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) did not meet with Giants officials even though they traveled to Miami to talk with him. The officials are traveling back to the team's facilities.

Footballguys view: This might seem overly cautious, but when player and team are in business adversary mode, they act completely in their own interests. Pierre-Paul is not currently under contract, so his camp is protecting their client by shielding the Giants from information that could help them deny Pierre-Paul his salary for part of the season.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul will delay signing    Tue Jul 7, 06:07 PM

Updating previous reports, New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) will not sign his franchise tag until he is ready to play. Pierre-Paul cannot be placed on the Non-Football Injury list until he signs. It is still a possibility that he could play Week 1, however.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul to start on NFI list?    Tue Jul 7, 02:57 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) could begin the season on the Non-Football Injury list. Pierre-Paul injured his hand in a fireworks accident over the holiday weekend.

Footballguys view: Pierre-Paul would not get paid for the time he would miss on the NFL list, which would be at least six games, similar to the PUP list. The Giants would then have three weeks to decide whether to activate Pierre-Paul. The league will have to approve this status since Pierre-Paul was not technically under contract when the injury happened, and Pierre-Paul may wait to sign his franchise tender until he can play to avoid losing salary in this scenario.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul update    Tue Jul 7, 12:45 PM

Updating previous items, New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul's (hands) injuries from a fireworks accident are not life-threatening, according to sources. Both of his hands were injured in the accident, and he suffered burns on the palm of one hand and the tips of three fingers. His finger is being tested for nerve damage. Doctors don't think there will be any permanent damage to his hands or disfigurement. The Giants are fine with Pierre-Paul playing out the 2015 season on his $14.8 million franchise tag and entering free agency next year. He had a career year in 2014, starting all 16 games and recording 12.5 sacks and forcing three fumbles.

Footballguys view: This all sounds somewhat minor for injuries that have kept Pierre-Paul in the hospital for days. Reports on the condition of his hands have varied wildly, so let's wait to close the book on this until we get reports from the Giants or Pierre-Paul's people.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul won't get new offer    Tue Jul 7, 08:44 AM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) won't receive a long-term contract offer from the team this year after injuring his hand in a fireworks accident, according to a team source. His only option will be to sign the one-year, $14.813 franchise tender, which the team is not considering rescinding.

Footballguys view: Pierre-Paul's story is showing the downside of trying to win long-term deal negotiations at the margin. Of course, there might have been a clause that voided the contract if Pierre-Paul had a serious injury in a prohibited activity, but this will still be a very costly incident for him. That the Giants haven't pulled the unsigned franchise tag offer is a good sign for Pierre-Paul's availability this year.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul could miss Week 1    Mon Jul 6, 06:00 PM

Updating previous reports, New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) could miss training camp and the start of the regular season, according to a source. Pierre-Paul injured his hand in a fireworks accident and remains hospitalized.

Footballguys view: Owa Odighizuwa was a first-round pick on some boards and might have fallen in the draft more because of long-time worries about a hip issue than his level of play. He could be put on the spot earlier than the team planned on.

Giants | New York pulls Jason Pierre-Paul offer    Mon Jul 6, 01:19 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul's (hand) fireworks incident has led to the Giants withdrawing their long-term offer to Pierre-Paul which would have paid him $60 million, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This only makes sense until the team learns more about his condition. They haven't pulled his franchise tag offer, even though Pierre-Paul hasn't signed it, which is a good sign that they don't believe his status is in danger this year.

Giants | Jason Pierre-Paul remains in hospital    Mon Jul 6, 01:08 PM

New York Giants DE Jason Pierre-Paul (hand) is still in a Miami hospital after suffering injuries to his hand from a fireworks accident.

Footballguys view: Some reports have made the injury seem more grim than simply something that could endanger the start of the season, and the Giants have reportedly pulled their long-term offer to Pierre-Paul. Adam Schefter has reported that there is only nerve damage in one finger and he won't lose any of them, so that's the most positive account we have right now.

Packers | Datone Jones to sit a game    Thu Jul 2, 03:54 PM

Green Bay Packers DE Datone Jones has been suspended one game by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Footballguys view: Jones hasn't really panned out since being a first-round pick in 2013. He's just a rotational player for the defensive line at this point and his absence shouldn't affect the Week 1 matchup with the Bears.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson suspended four games    Thu Jul 2, 02:22 PM

New York Jets DT Sheldon Richardson has been suspended four games by the NFL for violating the league's policy on substances of abuse.

Footballguys view: Richardson has been a force on the Jets defensive line, and he would be more missed in September if the team didn't have Leonard Williams fall to them at #6. The Cleveland, Philadelphia, Miami, and Indianapolis offensive lines will still have their hands full in the first four weeks of the season.

Lions | Jason Jones missed minicamp    Wed Jun 24, 06:36 PM

Detroit Lions DE Jason Jones (undisclosed) did not participate in the team's minicamp because of an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: Reports from other Lions beat writers indicate that Jones is recovering from offseason knee surgery. This may have been a clean-up procedure after Jones had to come back from a torn patellar tendon he suffered in 2013. He started all 17 games last year for the Lions, was a strong run-defender and finished with a career-high five sacks in 2014.

Cleveland Browns DT Phil Taylor (knee) did not participate during the team's minicamp last week, but the team believes he will be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Taylor is a talented and disruptive player in the middle of the defensive line when healthy. The problem is he hasn't been able to stay healthy in recent years. Over the last three seasons, Taylor has missed a total of 20 games. He's due over $5 million this year, but none of that is guaranteed. Taylor could get cut if he doesn't impress in training camp.

Raiders | Mario Edwards Jr. signed    Fri Jun 19, 06:28 PM

Oakland Raiders second-round pick DE Mario Edwards Jr. signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, June 19. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Edwards isn't much of a pass-rusher, but he does have a powerful base to stand strong as a run-stuffer. In college at Florida State, Edwards didn't ever truly play up to his potential...and that potentially sky-high level remains untapped.

Patriots | Malcom Brown signs deal    Fri Jun 19, 12:48 PM

New England Patriots DT Malcom Brown signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, June 19.

Footballguys view: Brown does a good job of quickly getting off the line of scrimmage after the snap. He has the ability to push blockers back into the quarterback. Brown can control his man at the point of attack, and he does a good job of finding the running back in the backfield.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston said he appreciates the advice he has received from DT Gerald McCoy and believes it is helping him earn the respect of the veterans on the team.

Footballguys view: The Saints continue to add to the defense in the hopes that it continues to improve from last season. Williams adds some help in run-stopping but is aging and no more than a rotational player.

Carolina Panthers OG Tyronne Green (Achilles') is out for the year with a torn Achilles' tendon he suffered Tuesday, June 16.
