Seahawks | Malik McDowell signs contract Fri May 26, 07:30 PM
Seattle Seahawks second-round draft choice DT Malik McDowell has signed a four-year contract worth $6.955 million. The deal includes a $3.198 million signing bonus.
|Footballguys view: McDowell is a big-bodied defender with the length to disrupt the quarterback from multiple spots on the line. Don't look at his numbers from college as they're not that impressive, but the potential with McDowell to be a solid pro is there. We'll see if he can take to pro coaching as questions from college about his work ethic and motor abound. He'll serve as a rotational player for the Seahawks.|
Dolphins | Charles Harris contract update Fri May 26, 07:29 PM
Updating a previous report, Miami Dolphins first-round draft choice DE Charles Harris' four-year contract is worth $10.522 million. The deal includes a $6.026 million signing bonus.Link to story
Jets | Sheldon Richardson shopped to three teams Fri May 26, 06:41 PM
New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson was been shopped to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts this offseason, but the Jets did not find any takers.
|Footballguys view: The Jets have been shopping him around for some time. There's a 50/50 chance he'll be dealt before the start of the regular season, but any team interested is going to have to pay his 2017 salary of almost $8.1 million. Richardson is in the final year of his contract and could be in for a big payday if he impresses this year. He had 8.0 sacks in 2014, but Richardson has only compiled 6.5 sacks over the last two years combined.|

Dolphins | Charles Harris signs contract Wed May 24, 05:28 PM
Miami Dolphins first-round draft choice DE Charles Harris signed his four-year contract Wednesday, May 24. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: A first-round pick out of Missouri, Harris has the build and skill set of a pass rushing phenom. He's got great athleticism and footwork off the edge, but the rookie should not be asked to stuff the run.|
Cowboys | Taco Charlton works with starter Wed May 24, 03:18 PM
Dallas Cowboys DE Taco Charlton worked with the first-team defense at right defensive end during organized team activities Wednesday, May 24.
|Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Charlton was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft with the idea that he could make an immediate impact as a pass rusher. At 6'6" 277 pounds, Charlton has the length and the strength to be a handful on the edge.|
Browns | Myles Garrett sitting out workouts Wed May 24, 02:33 PM
Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett (undisclosed) is not participating in organized team activities this week because of a minor undisclosed injury but expects to be a full participant next week.

Steelers | Stephon Tuitt not practicing at OTAs Wed May 24, 01:06 PM
Pittsburgh Steelers DE Stephon Tuitt (hand) underwent offseason hand surgery and is not practicing in OTAs, but the injury is not likely to affect him in the regular-season, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
|Footballguys view: No hurries, no worries here. Tuitt is likely to be ready for the start of training camp. An ascending talent, Tuitt is entering the last year of his rookie contract. A second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the Steelers might want to lock up Tuitt with an extension before he hits the open market.|

Jets | Two rookies sign with Jets Tue May 23, 07:03 PM
New York Jets S Marcus Maye and LB Dylan Donahue signed their four-year rookie contracts Tuesday, May 23. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Maye is going to be a big part of the rebuilt defensive backfield for the Jets. A second-round pick out of Florida in the 2017 NFL draft, Maye will team with first-round pick Jamal Adams (LSU) to give the Jets another playmaker in the secondary.|
Texans | J.J. Watt not limited Tue May 23, 05:07 PM
Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) said he has no restrictions and that he feels 'very, very good.'

NFL | Kedric Golston cleared Sat May 20, 12:58 PM
Free-agent DT Kedric Golston (hamstring) received medical clearance a little over two weeks ago after he finished the 2016 season on the Reserve/Injured list because of hamstring injury. He worked out for the San Francisco 49ers earlier this week.
|Footballguys view: Golston has been with Washington since he was a sixth-round pick out of Georgia in 2006. He only played in two games last year as injuries knocked him out for most of the season. He worked out for the 49ers this week and could latch on with some team for a minimum deal to work as a two-down run stuffer.|

Seahawks | Nazair Jones signs contract Fri May 19, 08:19 PM
Seattle Seahawks third-round draft choice DT Nazair Jones signed his four-year deal with the Seahawks Friday, May 19. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Jones is a run stuffer, and he's got the size, length and strength to win at the point of attack. He's not a pass-rusher, so the rookie from North Carolina is likely to come off the field on passing downs.|
Colts | Tarell Basham signs rookie deal with Indy Fri May 19, 04:10 PM
Indianapolis Colts third-round pick DE Tarell Basham signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, May 19. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.
|Footballguys view: Basham has the size (6'4" 269 pounds) and heart that scouts love. He's a player who gives full effort on the field on every snap, and the nuances of his game are developing in the right direction. Basham has the length, burst and strong hands to be disruptive as a pass rusher. He does lack a ton of moves when getting after the quarterback, but that can be taught at the pro level. The rookie from Ohio has starter's upside if he continues to develop.|
Browns | Caleb Brantley inks deal with Cleveland Fri May 19, 04:07 PM
Cleveland Browns sixth-round pick DT Caleb Brantley signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, May 19. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.
|Footballguys view: Brantley has the strength to be a force in the middle of the defensive line. He can work outside at end and help contain the run, but he also can move inside to tackle and stack up double teams if need be. The rookie from Florida will work as a rotational player behind Danny Shelton in 2017.|
Browns | Myles Garrett financials Fri May 19, 01:54 PM

Browns | Cleveland wraps up Myles Garrett deal Fri May 19, 12:20 PM
Cleveland Browns first-round pick DE Myles Garrett signed his four-year rookie contract Friday, May 19. Financial terms of the deal were undisclosed.
|Footballguys view: The number one overall pick from Texas A&M reminds many in the scouting community of Julius Peppers because of his size/strength combination. Under defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, Garrett should be able to wreak havoc off the edge as a rookie.|

New England Patriots OG Chris Barker was waived Thursday, May 18, while undrafted free-agent TE Sam Cotton (Nebraska) and rookie DE Deatrich Wise Jr. were signed to undisclosed deals.
|Footballguys view: Cotton is a player we'll watch, but only in the deepest of deep dynasty leagues. He's all potential after only collecting 17 passes for 185 yards and three touchdowns during four seasons with the Cornhuskers. He's got a dash of A.J. Derby (Broncos) to his game.|

Tampa Bay Buccaneers DE Jacquies Smith (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of the 2017 season. Smith suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in Week 1 last season.
|Footballguys view: The Bucs are hopeful that Smith can regain his form as a pass-rusher and work back onto the field as an important rotational player. Smith had 6.5 sacks in 2014 and 7.0 in 2015. Due to make almost $2 million this year, Smith will be an unrestricted free agent in 2018.|

Browns | Charges against Caleb Brantley dropped Wed May 17, 02:41 PM
Cleveland Browns DT Caleb Brantley's battery charge in Florida has been dismissed because of insufficient evidence, according to the Florida State Attorney's Office.
|Footballguys view: Brantley could've been a second- or third-round pick but on April 13th, he was involved in a physical altercation with a woman that resulted in the woman being knocked unconscious. On the field, Brantley has a stout frame and can create interior pressure on the passer. He was a rotational player in college (never played in half of Florida's defensive snaps) for the Gators, and that role should continue in the pros.|
Falcons | Atlanta meeting with Sean Lissemore Wed May 17, 02:12 PM
Free-agent DT Sean Lissemore (Chargers) is meeting with the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, May 17.
|Footballguys view: This is Lissemore's first known visit since the Chargers released him earlier this year. Going on 30, Lissemore has only played in eight games over the last two years and missed all of the 2016 season due to injury. The Falcons needed defensive line help this year and that's why they signed DT Dontari Poe and DE Jack Crawford in free agency, then they spent their first-round pick on Takkarist McKinley.|

Vikings | Will Sutton signed by Vikings Wed May 17, 09:48 AM
Free-agent DT Will Sutton (Bears) signed with the Minnesota Vikings on an undisclosed deal Wednesday, May 17. DL Toby Johnson was waived.
|Footballguys view: A third-round pick in 2014 by the Bears, Sutton has spent his entire career in Chicago. He didn't fit Vic Fangio's 3-4 defense with the Bears, but he's back in a 4-3 front with the Vikings. Sutton will compete for a spot on the 53-man roster and is no lock to make the team.|

NFL | Vince Wilfork still undecided Wed May 17, 09:45 AM
Free-agent DT Vince Wilfork (Texans) said Wednesday, May 17, he still hasn't made a firm decision on retirement.
|Footballguys view: Wilfork wasn't his old self with the Texans, and he really doesn't have much left to offer a pro team. It's not a firm decision, but he's probably just going to stay retired or get retired or whatever. Wilfork was a force in the middle for years with the Patriots, but his best days are behind him.|

Dolphins | Davon Godchaux signs with Dolphins Tue May 16, 06:08 PM
Miami Dolphins DT Davon Godchaux signed his four-year rookie deal Tuesday, May 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: At 6'3" 310 pounds, Godchaux is built like a bulldog..and he plays with a mean streak. He can extend his arms quickly and is technically sound when setting the edge against the run. He's a rotational player for the Dolphins up front.|
Cowboys | Dallas waives three players, signs two Tue May 16, 04:08 PM
Dallas Cowboys C Michael Coe, LB Jeremiah George and OT Levon Myers were waived Tuesday, May 16. In addition, undrafted free-agent DE Darnell Leslie (Monmouth) and free-agent TE M.J. McFarland (Jets) were signed.Link to story
Bengals | Five rookies sign with Bengals Mon May 15, 03:00 PM
Cincinnati Bengals DT Ryan Glasgow, PK Jake Elliott, LB Jordan Evans, S Brandon Wilson and TE Mason Schreck signed their four-year rookie deals Monday, May 15.
|Footballguys view: A seventh-round pick out of Buffalo, Schreck is known as a natural hands catcher and receiving tight end. He only had one drop on 59 receptions with the Bulls last year. He was the leading receiver in 2016, and now he hopes to make an impression for the Bengals. With his receiving ability and willingness to block, we could see the rookie work his way up the depth chart with time.|
Jaguars | Two Jaguars released, two added Mon May 15, 10:35 AM
Jacksonville Jaguars DT Louis Nix and SS Akeem Davis were released Monday, May 15. Undrafted free-agent S Jarrod Harper (West Virginia) and DT Kevin Maurice (Nebraska) were signed after trying out during last weekend's rookie camp.Link to story

Eagles | Derek Barnett will work on both sides Sun May 14, 08:58 PM
Philadelphia Eagles DE Derek Barnett will work at both defensive end spots to see which side he is most comfortable on, according to head coach Doug Pederson.
|Footballguys view: Barnett has great technique, so it's not surprising he can work on either side of the defensive line. He was one of the most productive players coming out in this year's draft, and Barnett could make an immediate impact as a pass rusher for the Eagles as a rookie.|
Seahawks | Malik McDowell leaves practice Sun May 14, 05:37 PM
Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell (foot) left practice early Sunday, May 14, after his foot was stepped on but he should be fine.
|Footballguys view: McDowell is going to line up at end for the Seahawks where his size and wingspan will come in handy. Coming out of Michigan State, there were plenty of questions about McDowell's work ethic but Seattle is a team known to work through those kind of problems with players. We should see the rookie work as a rotational player and potential starter for the Seahawks going forward.|
Saints | New Orleans eyeing open competition at DE Sun May 14, 02:32 PM
New Orleans Saints DE Cameron Jordan has one defensive end spot locked up, but the team expects an 'open competition' between Alex Okafor, Obum Gwacham, Hau'oli Kikaha and third-round pick Trey Hendrickson for the defensive end spot opposite him.
|Footballguys view: The Saints need to find a new starter opposite Jordan after not renewing the contract of Paul Kruger. Okafor has the experience advantage and has an 8.0 sack season (2014) on his resume (when he was with the Cardinals). Hendrickson, the rookie from FAU, is known as a hustle player who just won't quit. He can get the quarterback with bend, burst and a burning desire to make a play. Hendrickson may be best suited as a rotational player, but the upside is there for him to be an effective starter.|

Texans | J.J. Watt feels 'fantastic' Sun May 14, 11:23 AM
Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) told the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson he feels 'fantastic' after undergoing a pair of microdiscectomy surgeries last season to repair the same herniated disk in his back.
|Footballguys view: Great news for Watt and the Texans here. Watt missed most of last year (appeared in only three games) due to this back problem, and the multiple surgeries to repair the damage. He'll be limited during OTAs and minicamp, but it sounds like he should be good to go for the start of training camp.|

Seahawks | Malik McDowell to move outside Sat May 13, 11:27 PM
Seattle Seahawks DT Malik McDowell will be used more at defensive end, according to head coach Pete Carroll. 'I'm playing a whole different position,' McDowell said. 'Moving outside and going from taking double teams to taking single blocks here mostly.'
|Footballguys view: McDowell has the capability of playing end or tackle on the defensive line. If motivated (sometimes a big IF for the Michigan State prospect), McDowell can be an incredibly disruptive player due to his length and strength when getting after the passer.|
Buccaneers | Big year coming for Noah Spence? Sat May 13, 10:18 PM
Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Noah Spence said he has put on more muscle but weighs about 10 pounds less than last season, and DT Gerald McCoy said Spence is ready for a 'breakout year' while DE Robert Ayers said Spence could be a '15-plus sack guy' this season.
|Footballguys view: Spence has amazing upside as a pro, and we could see him as a double-digit sack guy for multiple years in the NFL. He fell to the second round of the 2016 NFL draft due to character concerns from back in his days at Ohio State. Spence transferred to Eastern Kentucky and has stayed on the right path since then.|

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson ready for 2017 Sat May 13, 09:54 PM
New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson said he has a chip on his shoulder heading into the 2017 season and wants to prove his struggles last year had nothing to do with the contract extension he signed.
|Footballguys view: Wilkerson's struggles in 2016 (just 4.5 sacks) were likely due to him playing hurt...at least that's what Jets coach Todd Bowles believes was the case. If he can get back to his 2015 form (12 sacks), Wilkerson easily has Pro Bowl potential and can be one of the most impactful players on the Jets defense.|

Browns | Myles Garrett worked with Bruce Smith Sat May 13, 09:20 PM
Cleveland Browns DE Myles Garrett watched film with retired DE Bruce Smith, and Garrett said Smith told him that he needed to be faster off the ball. 'Most people wouldn't say that, but he's one of the greatest if not the greatest pass-rusher,' Garrett said. 'If he thinks so and I want to be at his level one day, I got to take his advice and run with it.'
|Footballguys view: Garrett has the potential to be an immediate impact player for the Browns. He's strong on the edge, has a super quick spin move to the inside and Garrett has good closing burst to the quarterback. In addition to being a fine pass rusher, Garrett is capable of setting the edge against the run. Working with the former Bills great...and all-time sack leader...will only help Garrett play up to that amazing potential.|
