Falcons | Atlanta eyeing a move up in the draft    Fri Apr 21, 02:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff believes there will be opportunities to move up from the 31st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta has heavily scouted pass rushers. Missouri DE Charles Harris or Tennessee DE Derek Barnett are among those pass rushers who could be available in the 20s.

Footballguys view: The Falcons have no issues moving up in the first round as they proved with WR Julio Jones years ago. With the 31st pick, there's a chance Harris would be there but Barnett should be long gone. There will be movement in the 20s, and expect the Falcons to be a player in that mix.

Browns | Debate rages on about No. 1    Fri Apr 21, 01:03 PM

The Cleveland Browns' coaching staff is 'all in' on Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, but the front office and owner Jimmy Haslam reportedly are leaning more toward North Carolina QB Mitchell Trubisky, according to CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora.

Footballguys view: We've heard a few different versions of this story. It's the time of year where misinformation is floated out, so perhaps teams behind the Browns who want Trubisky would be interested in trading up.

Falcons | Charles Harris worked out for Falcons    Fri Apr 21, 11:06 AM

Missouri DE Charles Harris worked out for the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago.

Footballguys view: Harris is getting a lot of buzz right before the draft...and for good reason. He was a basketball star in high school, and he takes that type of fluid athleticism to the football field as a pass rusher. He can make plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage, and Harris has good burst when the ball carrier is within range. He could be an option for the Falcons with the 31st overall pick in the first round.

Lions | Takkarist McKinley meets with Detroit    Wed Apr 19, 02:14 PM

UCLA DE/LB Takkarist McKinley met with the Detroit Lions earlier this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Length and hustle is the name of McKinley's game. He reminds some in the scouting community of Tamba Hali (Chiefs) because of his length and strength on the edge. McKinley needs to learn how to use his hands better, but his burst to the quarterback makes him someone to be feared when rushing the passer.

Raiders | Dan Williams released    Tue Apr 18, 05:00 PM

Oakland Raiders DT Dan Williams was released Tuesday, April 18.

Footballguys view: Williams is a big bodied run stuffer who should get some interest on the open market. He's only a rotational player, and his weight is always a concern, but Williams should have a few teams looking at him. The Raiders clear up $4.5 million in cap space with this move.

Texans | J.J. Watt excited, feeling well     Mon Apr 17, 02:52 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) said his body feels well and that he's looking forward to returning to action. Watt underwent back surgery earlier this offseason.

Footballguys view: All signs point to Watt returning to his dominant ways in the NFL. That's great news for the Texans....now if they just had a quarterback.

Seahawks | Malik McDowell visiting Seahawks    Mon Apr 17, 12:10 PM

Michigan DT Malik McDowell is visiting the Seattle Seahawks Monday, April 17, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McDowell is big, has a large wingspan and can dominate in the middle of the line. That's the good...but the bad is there too. McDowell was known to take plays off in college and his technique can get lazy as the game goes on. He's raw, but the potential is there for him to be one of the more disruptive players in the league.

Eagles | Derek Barnett visiting Eagles    Mon Apr 17, 10:32 AM

Tennessee DE Derek Barnett is visiting the Philadelphia Eagles Monday, April 17.

Footballguys view: Barnett can get after the quarterback early and often. He's technically sound and strong at the point of attack. The Eagles have the 14th pick in the first round, and they may go for Barnett at that point. He's going to be a first-round pick and Barnett has to be considered one of the safest picks in this draft class because of his consistent level of production from college.

Panthers | Kawann Short signs extension    Mon Apr 17, 09:45 AM

Carolina Panthers DT Kawann Short signed a five-year, $80 million deal with the Panthers Monday, April 17, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Short was reportedly seeking a deal that paid him more annually, but $16 million per year is nothing to sneeze at. It makes him the third-highest paid 4-3 defensive tackle in the league behind Ndamukong Suh and Fletcher Cox. Short may not get 11.0 sacks like he did two years ago, but 5-7 sacks is quite reasonable for the stout run defender.

Bengals | Cincinnati eyeing Derek Barnett?    Sun Apr 16, 08:57 PM

Tennessee DE Derek Barnett was put through drills at his pro day by Cincinnati Bengals defensive line coach Jacob Burney while defensive coordinator Paul Guenther watched.

Footballguys view: Barnett is one of the most productive players in this draft class. He broke Reggie White's all-time sack record at the University of Tennessee, and Barnett has the technique to continue his production at the pro level. He will be a first-round pick, and the Bengals may be thinking seriously about him at 9th overall.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson not a big trade target    Sun Apr 16, 04:17 PM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson does not appear to be receiving a lot of interest in the trade market this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Jets have been trying to move Richardson for quite some time now. Teams appear to be concerned about the $8.1 million is scheduled to receive in 2017 and that he is entering the final year of his contract.

Texans | Houston keeping tabs on Tarell Basham    Sun Apr 16, 02:07 PM

Ohio DE Tarell Basham recently worked out with the Houston Texans, who also put him through the paces on campus and met with him at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine as well the Senior Bowl.

Footballguys view: Basham is a powerful player with the length and burst to get after the quarterback. He needs to learn how to use his hands better to get the most of his pass rushing ability. Basham should be a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

NFL | DeMarcus Walker not built for NFL?    Sat Apr 15, 09:25 PM

Florida State DE DeMarcus Walker isn't a great athlete, according to an AFC scout. 'I wonder if his production will translate to the pros,' the scout said.

Footballguys view: Walker posted 25 sacks over the last two years at Florida State, but he's not a 'win early' rusher. Instead, he relies on pursuit and a 'never quit' attitude against blockers. He's durable and dependable, but some team may want to try him inside at tackle.

Rams | Aaron Donald will have similar role    Fri Apr 14, 07:14 PM

Los Angeles Rams DT Aaron Donald said he will have a similar role on defense even though the team will be moving to a 3-4 defensive alignment under defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. 'I'm still going to be a 3-technique; still a penetrate, get-up-field type of guy. I got to come here during the offseason and got to sit down and talk with him. I like his game plan and how he's going to use us, and the position he's going to put us in to have success,' Donald said.

Jets | Acquiring Sheldon Richardson could be cheap    Fri Apr 14, 12:19 PM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson may not be able to fetch more than a fourth-round pick on the trade market given his recent off-field history and on-field production, according to the New York Post's Brian Costello.

Footballguys view: If that was the case, then why aren't teams interested? The Jets have been wanting to deal Richardson for a while now, but to no avail so far. As the draft nears, we'll see if they can finally unload the talented defensive end.

Free-agent DE Jared Odrick (Jaguars) has drawn interest from the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason.

Free-agent DT Johnathan Hankins (Giants) is signing a three-year, $30 million deal with the Indianapolis Colts Thursday, April 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Giants were never giving him that deal, considering the price range of their defensive line. Hankins is a decent player and should help a pretty bad Colts defense.

NFL | Terrance Knighton retiring    Wed Apr 12, 07:28 PM

Free-agent DT Terrance Knighton (Patriots) has decided to retire from professional football.

Footballguys view: Affectionately known as "Potroast" we'll see Knighton finish his pro career after spending 2016 out of football. A big-bodied run stuffer (to say the least), Knighton is going to pursue a career in coaching.
