NFL | Darnell Dockett calls it a career    Sun Jul 24, 03:40 PM

Free-agent DL Darnell Dockett (49ers) is expected to sign a one-day contract with the Arizona Cardinals before announcing his retirement from football on Monday, July 25, according to a source. The 35-year-old three-time Pro Bowler accumulated 40.5 sacks over 10 seasons as a Cardinal - seventh in team history - and tied a Super Bowl record with three in Super Bowl XLIII.

Broncos | Adam Gotsis could start right away     Sun Jul 24, 12:43 PM

Denver Broncos rookie DT Adam Gotsis (knee) is expected to be good to go for the start of the regular season. It shouldn't take long for him to become part of the starting rotation either, according to's Jeff Legwold.

Dolphins | Cameron Wake may see fewer snaps    Sat Jul 23, 10:32 AM

Miami Dolphins DE Cameron Wake could receive fewer snaps than usual in 2016 so the team can keep him fresh during the season.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Wake is only eight months removed from a torn Achilles' tendon, so the plan to keep his workload light makes a lot of sense.

49ers | Tank Carradine may be pass-rush specialist    Fri Jul 22, 04:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers DE Tank Carradine likely will be used as a pass-rush specialist this season when the team is in their nickel package. There is a chance that he could be in the starting lineup because of LB Aaron Lynch's suspension.

Footballguys view: Lynch is one of the best players on the 49ers defense and clearly their best pass rusher. If Carradine doesn't take a big step forward this year, the lowly 49ers will have even more trouble putting resistance to opposing passing games with an inexperienced secondary and feeble pass rush.

Colts | Arthur Jones suspended    Fri Jul 22, 04:29 PM

Indianapolis Colts DE Arthur Jones has been suspended for the first four games of the 2016 season for violating the NFL's policy on performance enhancing drugs.

Footballguys view: Jones has been a free agent bust, playing only nine games in two years after signing a five year, 33 million dollar contract. 2015 third round pick Henry Anderson is recovering from a torn ACL and might not be ready for Week 1, so the Detroit Lions should have an excellent rushing matchup to open the season.

Seahawks | Michael Bennett unhappy with contract    Fri Jul 22, 01:01 PM

Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Bennett is unhappy with his contract, saying he wants 'to be fairly compensated with the top guys in the league,' and believing that he's 'definitely one of the top five defensive ends.' He added: 'I'm just to the point where it's kind of like, if you don't think I'm valuable, then just get rid of me.' Bennett is set to make $5.5 million this year and $7 million next year.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks are unlikely to give him more money with two years left on his deal, but next year they could compensate him for extra production under his current deal, like they did when they extended Marshawn Lynch.

Texans | J.J. Watt could miss first month    Fri Jul 22, 08:03 AM

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) could miss up to 10 weeks after his back operation, which would include the first month of the season, according to a source.

Jaguars | Jacksonville not signing Greg Hardy     Thu Jul 21, 10:16 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Cowboys) visited with and worked out for the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, July 21, but he will not be signed at this time, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars are the only known visit for Hardy since the Cowboys let him hit the open market. He's one of the more controversial players out there due to his behavior, and we don't think any team would add him unless they're really desperate. The Cowboys will barely be able to field a defense early this year due to injuries and suspensions, and even they have no interest in Hardy...or at least that's what reports indicate.

Texans | J.J. Watt could miss Week 1    Thu Jul 21, 10:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt's (back) recent back surgery has a recovery time of six to eight weeks, which would put his return right around Week 1 of the 2016 season.

Footballguys view: It's a touch-and-go situation with Watt. We don't expect to see him at all in the preseason, and we may not know his playing status until the week of practice leading up to the team's first game. Back injuries are tricky to recover from, so the Texans need to be ultra cautious with their superstar here.

Texans | J.J. Watt underwent back surgery    Thu Jul 21, 09:26 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) had back surgery recently, and although he is expected to begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, he should be OK for the season.

Footballguys view: Back surgery is not something to mess around with. We don't think the Texans will use Watt at all in camp or the preseason as he's got a 6-8 week window for recovery according to some reports. That means the start of the regular season is up in the air for the superstar defender. Stay tuned as we get through August we should learn more about Watt's recovery.

Jaguars | Greg Hardy visits Jaguars    Thu Jul 21, 07:25 PM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Cowboys) visited the Jacksonville Jaguars Thursday, July 21. The Jaguars have been considering Hardy since springtime.

Footballguys view: Hardy was not terribly effective for the Cowboys and became more of a hindrance and a headache than a help. We're not sure we'd love the fit either culturally or on the field.

Eagles | Connor Barwin could start    Thu Jul 21, 05:46 PM

Philadelphia Eagles LB Connor Barwin is slated to start at defensive end opposite DE Vinny Curry, according to Phil Sheridan of DE Brandon Graham could also start instead of Barwin, though. The defensive linemen are expected to rotate frequently no matter who starts.

Footballguys view: Barwin has been solid in his career but the change should suit him in this defense. "I'm excited because in a 3-4, it's a lot of movement," he told Matt Lombardo of NJ Advance Media. "I'm going to line up, pass rush and be able to work a guy over for an entire game. I'm excited for that." We're excited too, though the rotation will hold him back from putting up solid IDP numbers. He may be no more than a DE4 but we like the upside.

Browns | Desmond Bryant hoping to play this year    Thu Jul 21, 12:45 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Desmond Bryant (pectoral) is hoping that he can return this year after suffering a torn pectoral muscle while working out in May. At the earliest, he could be cleared by mid-November with six or seven games left in the season. Bryant led the Browns in sacks in 2015 with six. He'll resume running and doing lower body work as soon as his incision heals.

Seahawks | Michael Bennett enters camp unhappy    Thu Jul 21, 02:55 AM

Seattle Seahawks DE Michael Bennett (ankle) made it clear he wants a new deal, and he did not participate in organized team activities (OTAs) as a result of his unhappiness. He did show for mandatory minicamp, but he sat out with an ankle injury. If his deal is not redone before the season, it will be interesting to see how it affects Bennett into the regular season.

Footballguys view: There's only so much you can do with the cap restraints teams have and the Seahawks have benefited from some cheap rookie contracts for their big stars. We knew once Russell Wilson got paid big, it would be hard to keep everyone happy. Bennett has been tremendous in this scheme, but it's a scheme which prides itself on plug and play defenders. So Bennett may have to wait until he hits free agency in 2018.

Seahawks | Many replacements for base defense LB    Thu Jul 21, 02:52 AM

Cardinals | Red Bryant in jeopardy in Arizona?    Wed Jul 20, 10:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Red Bryant was a veteran with experience who helped plug the run last season. However, he might lose his job in the defensive line rotation for a number of reasons. The team has too much depth, as DLs Rodney Gunter progressed better than expected, Corey Peters (Achilles') is returning from injury and Xavier Williams proved he could be a suitable backup to plug the run.

Cardinals | Robert Nkemdiche impressive so far    Wed Jul 20, 10:24 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Robert Nkemdiche was impressive during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. He has the skill set and talent of a top-five pick, but teams were scared off by an off-field incident in December 2015 while he was with the University of Mississippi. He has explosiveness, quick hands and quick feet who is likely to be the team's newest starting defensive lineman.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones to benefit from secondary    Wed Jul 20, 10:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones give the team a top-notch pass rusher, perhaps the best since veteran John Abraham in 2013. Jones is younger than Abraham and DE Dwight Freeney, who had eight sacks last season. Jones will be helped by having one of the league's best secondaries behind him and two-time Pro Bowler DE Calais Campbell working next to him.

Texans | Devon Still on track to start    Wed Jul 20, 05:13 PM

Houston Texans DE Devon Still is considered the leading candidate to start at defensive end opposite DE J.J. Watt this season.

Footballguys view: With Jared Crick (Broncos) moving on in free agency, the Texans have to find a new starter. Still was out of the league last year, but he's built to stand strong on the defensive line.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson will not be limited    Wed Jul 20, 04:19 PM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson will receive his normal snaps during training camp even though he has been suspended for the first game of the 2016 season. Richardson was limited during training camp last season and said his conditioning was an issue after he served a four-game suspension.

Footballguys view: Richardson is one of the more disruptive players in the league at his position. With only a one-game ban, the Jets would be wise to get him up to speed with a normal amount of reps in camp.

Cardinals | Calais Campbell may receive extension    Wed Jul 20, 03:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals DE Calais Campbell is a player that the Cardinals would like to sign to a contract extension. General manager Steve Keim said there is no timetable for a possible extension for Campbell.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals don't have much cap room to work with, but investing in Campbell would be a wise move. The team is likely to deal with FS Tyrann Mathieu first, then we'll see if Campbell can get a new big-money deal.

Cardinals | Some Arizona players may be on PUP list    Wed Jul 20, 03:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee), DT Frostee Rucker (ankle) and LB Zack Wagenmann (foot) appear to be candidates to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. General manager Steve Keim said three or four players likely will be placed on the PUP list.

Footballguys view: The PUP list to start training camp is not a big deal. Players on the list can be activated at any time.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson will be ready    Wed Jul 20, 02:33 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) said he will be ready for the season opener but can't predict when he'll be available in training camp. He is recovering from a broken right leg suffered in the season finale in 2015.

Footballguys view: That's good news for Wilkerson, but we don't think the Jets will have him do much in the preseason. Monitor his status leading up to the regular season. With Wilkerson on the field, the Jets are going to be a tough defense to run against. Remember that when considering RBs going up against them. In 2015, the Jets gave up only 83.4 rushing yards per game--a mark good for 2nd in the NFL.

Bills | Shaq Lawson's timetable cloudy    Wed Jul 20, 10:23 AM

Buffalo Bills LB Shaq Lawson (shoulder) could miss half the season, or possibly the entire season, according to ESPN's Louis Riddick. However, a source told WGR 550's Sal Capaccio, Lawson isn't expected to miss that much time. The source also said a definitive timetable hasn't been set for Lawson.

Footballguys view: Lawson had shoulder surgery back in May, and the timetable for recovery should be about six months. We wouldn't be surprised to see the talented rookie put on the PUP list to begin the regular season. We'll learn more about this as training camp goes on.

Dolphins | Dion Jordan looks rejuvenated    Mon Jul 18, 09:59 PM

Miami Dolphins DE Dion Jordan has had an impressive offseason and looks like a 'brand new' player, according to a source. However, he is still yet to be reinstated. Training camp begins Monday, July 29.

Footballguys view: If Jordan can finally start playing up to his potential, it would be a great boost for the Dolphins defense. He's not yet been officially reinstated by the league, but Jordan's agent expects that to happen before the start of training camp. Jordan could give the Dolphins a much-needed jolt to their pass rush if he's truly a new man.

Panthers | Kawann Short won't hold out    Mon Jul 18, 01:09 PM

Carolina Panthers DT Kawann Short will report to training camp later this month after skipping some of organized team activities in search of a new deal. Short is looking to match the six-year, $102.6 million deal the Philadelphia Eagles gave to DT Fletcher Cox.

Footballguys view: Short was at the facility for the mandatory portion of the offseason. A second-round pick in 2013, Short had a breakout season last year and was named second-team All-Pro. He's set to be a free agent in 2017, so it would benefit the Panthers to get something done before he hits the open market (or before they'd have to use the franchise tag on him).

Chargers | Update on Joey Bosa's contract    Sat Jul 16, 09:59 PM

San Diego Chargers DE Joey Bosa hasn't signed his rookie deal because of issues regarding offsets and cash flow, according to sources.

Footballguys view: In today's NFL (with a rookie salary cap), having a first-round pick miss all of minicamp and OTAs due to a contract dispute is a bit surprising. With training camp fast approaching, we have a feeling the two sides will be able to work something out.

Panthers | Kony Ealy hitting the weight room    Sat Jul 16, 09:42 PM

Carolina Panthers DE Kony Ealy has been in the training room and weight room a lot this offseason, according to defensive coordinator Sean McDermott.

Footballguys view: Ealy has a large opportunity in front of him this year. A second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, Ealy has been inconsistent during his pro career. However, he had a monstrous game in the Super Bowl with three sacks, and interception and a forced fumble. Jared Allen jumped on his horse and rode off into the sunset, so Ealy will be the one to take his spot. He played 621 snaps last year in 16 games, and that number should climb in 2016.

Panthers | Veteran tackle could miss cut     Sat Jul 16, 03:56 PM

Carolina Panthers DTs Kyle Love and Paul Soliai could be battling each other for a roster spot if the Panthers choose to keep four defensive tackles.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have a strong front seven on defense, and their front four is one of the best in the game. Love was an important rotational player for the Panthers as they made a run to Super Bowl 50, and that's why they re-signed him to a one-year deal earlier this year. Back in March, Soliai signed a two-year, $7 million with $3 million guaranteed. The guaranteed money may make it difficult for the Panthers to cut him if his declining play continues.

Jets | Sheldon Richardson will be expensive    Sat Jul 16, 03:15 PM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson will 'surely' come at a higher price than the $54 million in guaranteed money to which DE Muhammad Wilkerson signed, according to's Darryl Slater. Richardson and the Jets are expected to start long-term contract negotiations next offseason as Richardson enters the fourth year of his rookie contract.

Footballguys view: The Jets have used the fifth-year option on Richardson (a first-round pick in 2013), a move that will lock up Richardson through the 2017 season. We should see the two sides work towards an extension next offseason before Richardson hits free agency (so long as he stays healthy and stops getting suspended).

Seahawks | Jarran Reed should start    Sat Jul 16, 01:38 PM

Seattle Seahawks rookie DT Jarran Reed is expected to replace San Diego Chargers DT Brandon Mebane and start at defensive tackle with DT Ahtyba Rubin.

Footballguys view: Reed was one of our favorite rookie defensive tackles in the 2016 draft class. A mountain of a man, Reed was never able to put up great numbers at Alabama. Instead, his role was to plug up the middle and re-direct plays around him---a role he played well. Earlier this year at the Reese's Senior Bowl, Reed was a dominant player in practice and was one of the 'buzz' players during the week. He should at least be a solid run-stuffer for the Seahawks defense in 2016.

Browns | Coaches intrigued with Xavier Cooper    Sat Jul 16, 12:05 PM

Cleveland Browns DE Xavier Cooper is an intriguing player for the coaching staff because of his speed. They believe he has a chance to make an impact as a pass rusher.

Footballguys view: We liked Cooper in last year's draft class. A third-round pick out of Washington State, Cooper has the quickness and burst to create pressure from the edge. He played 345 snaps in 14 games as a rookie in 2015 and had 1.5 sacks. We'll see if he can do more this year.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson may go on PUP list    Sat Jul 16, 09:49 AM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson (leg) likely will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list because the team wants to be cautious with him since he is returning from a broken leg. The Jets want to make sure he will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Camp PUP is no big deal--unlike the PUP list to start the regular season. If he's on the list to start camp, the Jets can decide to activate him at any time. We should not only see him on PUP to start training camp, but don't expect Wilkerson to get much playing time in the preseason either.

Lions | Tighter snap count for Haloti Ngata?    Sat Jul 16, 12:16 AM

Detroit Lions DT Haloti Ngata hasn't played a full 16-game schedule since 2011, and beat writer Dave Birkett believes the Lions need to monitor Ngata's snap count in 2016 in order to keep him healthy and productive.

Footballguys view: That's a smart move for the Lions. He played 565 snaps for the Lions last year in 14 games. That number should be much lower that that in 2016.

Cowboys | Jack Crawford to contribute early    Fri Jul 15, 10:00 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Jack Crawford is expected to pick up additional snaps at defensive tackle early in the year as DT Tyrone Crawford moves outside in place of DE Demarcus Lawrence and DE Randy Gregory, who will both be serving suspensions to start the year.

Footballguys view: It's all hands on deck for the Cowboys defensive line. We hope they don't suffer any injuries at the position in training camp as they're already incredibly thin.

Texans | Ra'Zahn Howard looking to drop weight    Fri Jul 15, 08:22 PM

Houston Texans DT Ra'Zahn Howard weighed 325 at his Pro Day but now weighs 317 pounds. He said his goal is to be around 310 pounds once training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Howard went undrafted in the 2016 Supplemental Draft, but the Texans were quick to add him after that. He's a powerful player who did a good job of controlling the point of attack in college for Purdue. Howard struggles to get consistent penetration, but at 325 pounds he can move well laterally and chase down plays that go away from him. He was a starter in college, but he was rotated on and off the field. He should be a rotational player if he makes the Texans 53-man roster.

Saints | Sheldon Rankins may play every down    Fri Jul 15, 04:52 PM

New Orleans Saints DT Sheldon Rankins performed well during the team's minicamp this offseason and should have a chance to be on the field for all three downs in 2016.

Footballguys view: The Saints have made changed to the defense that should allow Rankins to perform to the best of his abilities. They're going to ask him to get upfield quickly and penetrate the pocket with his quickness and strength. Rankins is not the biggest defensive tackle, but a bit undersized at 299 pounds they won't ask him to cover two gaps and take on multiple blockers.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson receives new deal    Fri Jul 15, 04:51 PM

Updating a previous report, New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson did sign a five-year deal with the Jets Friday, July 15, worth $86 million. The deal includes $37 million guaranteed and $54 million in the first three years.

Footballguys view: It was a bit of a surprise move to be honest. All signs were pointing to no deal, but the two sides were able to get something done right before the deadline. Wilkerson had not participated during the offseason camps and there was a belief that he would hold out into training camp and perhaps even the regular season. Now, Wilkerson gets the long-term deal he wants and the Jets will continue to have one of the best defensive lines in the league.

Jets | Muhammad Wilkerson, Jets far apart    Thu Jul 14, 05:28 PM

New York Jets DE Muhammad Wilkerson and the Jets are still far apart in their long-term contract negotiations. The deadline for franchise tagged players to sign a long-term deal is Friday, July 15. If a deal is not done, Wilkerson would have to play the 2016 season under the franchise tag. Wilkerson would earn $15.701 million this year with the tag. It's also possible, according to's Darryl Slater, that Wilkerson could also be tagged next year.

Footballguys view: Wilkerson will play, but under the tag. The simple truth is the Jets lack the room to make him a good offer this year or next. Wilkerson will play because he stands to make more money in free agency if he proves he is healthy. We may see more Leonard Williams and Sheldon Richardson in Wilkerson's spot by the end of the season.
