Texans | J.J. Watt could play Week 1     Mon Aug 29, 05:55 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) is progressing well and may be ready to play by Week 1, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Perhaps Watt could play in Week 1 but in a limited role. Back injuries are tricky, and the team doesn't want to aggravate the injury.

Texans | Will Fuller finds the end zone    Sun Aug 28, 10:26 PM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller had three catches for 67 yards and a touchdown in a 34-24 preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: Fuller has set himself up as a strong sleeper in the late rounds of deeper drafts. He could be boom/bust week-to-week and the Texans offensive line is still a question mark, but Fuller's vertical speed means he can make your fantasy week on any one play.

Texans | Brock Osweiler sharp in win    Sun Aug 28, 10:12 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 11 of his 13 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown in a 34-24 preseason win over the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: Osweiler had a great night hooking up with rookie wideouts Braxton Miller and Will Fuller. The Texans offensive line is without some key starters, but they looked good against the Cardinals. Osweiler is not on the fantasy radar except in 2 QB or superflex leagues, but he does have a pass offense on the rise around him.

Texans | Nick Martin out four months    Thu Aug 25, 03:08 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans C Nick Martin (ankle) is expected to miss four months after undergoing ankle surgery, according to sources. He likely will be placed on the Reserve/Injured list but could bring him back to practice after six weeks.

Footballguys view: This is a brutal look for the offensive line to kick off the season. Derek Newton is battling a hamstring injury and Duane Brown has a quadriceps injury which may keep him on the PUP to start the season.

Texans | J.J. Watt expects to practice    Thu Aug 25, 01:43 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) expects to participate in practice next week and has made good progress in his recovery from his back injury, according to a source.

Texans | Duane Brown may stay on PUP list    Thu Aug 25, 01:35 PM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) is not expected to be ready for the start of the regular season and could start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Another hit for an already beleaguered offensive line as center Nick Martin is gone for the season and Derek Newton is battling a hamstring injury. We're starting to get a little worried about Lamar Miller, Brock Osweiler and the passing offense.

Texans | Nick Martin's season over    Thu Aug 25, 09:35 AM

Houston Texans C Nick Martin (ankle) underwent surgery on his ankle recently, and he's expected to miss the entire 2016 season.

Footballguys view: That's a huge blow to this offensive line, no offense to Greg Mancz - the guy who replaced Martin. We'll have to watch and see how this impacts Brock Osweiler and Lamar Miller, but the center is a critical point in most offenses so this could be a problem.

Texans | Braxton Miller could start in slot    Mon Aug 22, 12:37 AM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has been the starting slot receiver in the first two preseason games, and offensive coordinator Bob Godsey said he has been impressed with Miller's commitment to developing relationships with his quarterbacks and coaches.

Footballguys view: Miller has only been playing WR for a year, and he's got incredible upside if he continues to develop. A converted QB, Miller has incredible athleticism and can easily make defenders miss in the open field. He's a strong runner who plays with intensity and physicality as a receiver. The Texans passing game is all about WR DeAndre Hopkins, but we could see Miller contributing as a rookie. Consider him a WR7 in deep leagues.

Texans | Surgery possible for Nick Martin     Mon Aug 22, 12:11 AM

Houston Texans C Nick Martin's (ankle) high-ankle sprain is more serious than initially expected, and head coach Bill O'Brien acknowledged surgery is a possibility.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Texans here. Martin is unlikely to play in Week 1 if he's getting ankle surgery in the near future. With Martin out, the team would turn to Tony Bergstrom or Greg Mancz next.

Texans | Nick Novak in concussion protocol    Sun Aug 21, 04:11 PM

Houston Texans PK Nick Novak (concussion) is in the NFL's concussion protocol.

Footballguys view: Novak has been competing with rookie UDFA Kai'mi Fairbairn and holding a lead, but if this concussion is an issue, it could be put his Week 1 status in jeopardy. You should probably just stay away from the Houston kickers with so many other options in fantasy drafts.

Texans | Will Fuller everything as advertised    Sun Aug 21, 01:22 AM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller snared four balls for 73 yards and a touchdown on eight targets in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Fuller got enough separation for Brock Osweiler to float a ball towards the back corner of the end zone on his score. He is a starter and worth a late pick to see if he can keep this up into the regular season with defenses focused on the running game and DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | Brock Osweiler decent in victory    Sun Aug 21, 01:22 AM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler completed 12 of his 19 pass attempts for 124 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Footballguys view: Osweiler has a revitalized offense with new weapons on the outside and in the slot, and a rejuvenated Jaelen Strong able to play at both spots. He's on the fringe of fantasy relevance, but if JJ Watt misses time early, the Texans could return to their high volume passing ways from the first half of 2015.

Texans | Three missing from Houston O-line    Sun Aug 21, 01:21 AM

Houston Texans OG Jeff Allen (personal), C Nick Martin (ankle) and OT Derek Newton (hamstring) each missed the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints.

Texans | Duane Brown still targeting opener    Sun Aug 21, 01:21 AM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) missed the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the New Orleans Saints, as expected. He remains hopeful to be ready for the regular season opener, as he progresses from a torn quadriceps muscle.

Footballguys view: The Texans offensive line is banged up right now. They'll face Chicago's solid front seven to open the season. It would be very beneficial for Brown to knock the rust off next week, but the Texans might not be able to risk that if they think it could heighten the chances of a setback that would endanger his early season status.

Texans | J.J. Watt progressing, status still unclear    Fri Aug 19, 11:42 AM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) has head coach Bill O'Brien encouraged by Watt's progress from back surgery. However, O'Brien is still unsure about Watt's availability for the first two games of the season.

Footballguys view: Chicago and Kansas City would be the beneficiaries of Watt's absence. He could also take a game or two to ramp up after returning from back surgery, New England (sans Tom Brady) and Tennessee could get a little easier matchup in Weeks 3 and 4. We would still count on Watt to look like himself pretty quickly after his return.

Texans | Tom Savage declared backup QB    Thu Aug 18, 08:02 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage has been named the team's backup quarterback by head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Well, at this point if he couldn't beat out Brandon Weeden, the Texans should be concerned. Savage has been impressive in camp, so this really comes as no surprise. While it's hard to see him as a starter, he should make a great backup and have a nice long career doing it.

Texans | Nick Martin injury not serious    Thu Aug 18, 06:51 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans C Nick Martin (foot) should be alright, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Martin left practice early with an apparent foot or ankle injury.

Texans | Tom Savage No. 2 for now    Thu Aug 18, 01:20 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is currently the team's primary backup at quarterback, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien said Savage has really improved since last season.

Footballguys view: Savage has two more years on his contract and they would like to see if he is worth keeping around or worth more in trade. Last season he was hurt with a shoulder injury, so this is essentially his sophomore year. This is Brock Osweiler's team, but if he implodes, we might see something from Savage.

Texans | Will Fuller quiet Sunday    Mon Aug 15, 12:52 AM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller had one catch for four yards in a 24-13 preseason win over the San Francisco 49ers Sunday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: Fuller appears to be set as the #2 receiver, with Jaelen Strong and Braxton Miller also playing sizable roles. Cecil Shorts appears to be on the outside looking in for playing time. Fuller has some best ball value and big play league punch.

Texans | Solid start for Braxton Miller     Sun Aug 14, 10:31 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller had four catches for 34 yards in a 24-13 win over the San Francisco 49ers in the preseason Sunday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: Miller is a bit raw as a wideout, but the Texans seem intent on getting him on the field a lot as a rookie. It will be hard for him to have fantasy value this year, but he remains an intriguing dynasty stash in a Texans offense full of dynamic young talents.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz listed as starter    Tue Aug 9, 08:43 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz is listed as the starting tight end on the Texans' first depth chart. TE Ryan Griffin would be the backup.

Footballguys view: There's no fantasy relevance at the TE position in Houston. Fiedorowicz is a huge target and may be able to snare a couple of red-zone TDs this year...but that's about it.

Texans | Jaelen Strong in starting position    Tue Aug 9, 07:05 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong was listed as the No. 2 wide receiver opposite WR DeAndre Hopkins on Houston's initial depth chart.

Footballguys view: Strong is an intriguing dynasty prospect because of his size/ball skills combination. He's lost some weight this year to be more explosive, and he's been impressing in camp. The passing game is all about Hopkins, but Strong may perform like a WR6 for fantasy owners in 2016.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney out of practice    Tue Aug 9, 10:06 AM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (undisclosed) is out of practice Tuesday, Aug. 9, for the third consecutive day. Head coach Bill O'Brien said the team is just being cautious.

Footballguys view: Clowney is treated like a fragile veteran even though he is only 23 years old. The Texans are still waiting to get anything near #1 overall pick production from him. He should be as healthy as he has been in his three years in the league in 2016.

Texans | Josh Lenz returns    Tue Aug 9, 09:53 AM

Houston Texans WR Josh Lenz (undisclosed) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 9.

Footballguys view: Lenz has an outside shot to make the Texans roster. He put up outstanding measureables at his 2013 pro day and he is one to watch in preseason games when the Texans go to their backup receivers.

Texans | Lamar Miller receives day off    Sun Aug 7, 12:45 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) did not participate in practice Sunday, Aug. 7, because he received a day off, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Miller is being treated as a central part of the team's game plan, and one they don't need to overwork or push through minor injuries in camp.

Texans | Braxton Miller on the sidelines    Sun Aug 7, 11:15 AM

Texans | Lamar Miller not practicing    Sun Aug 7, 11:14 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) is not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 7.

Footballguys view: This ankle injury sounded minor when it was first reported and Miller returned to practice, but with time this kind of injury can get worse. As long as Miller doesn't miss more than a week of practice, we can treat this absence as more precaution than warning sign.

Texans | Tom Savage impressing in training camp    Sun Aug 7, 10:18 AM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage has had an impressive first week of training camp, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'He's really worked hard to change his body, become stronger, become quicker, quicker release,' O'Brien said. 'He has a much better knowledge of our offense. It takes a while for that position. The only thing Tom needs is an opportunity. Tom is a good football player and he's put a lot of time in to get to where he is right now.' Savage is competing with QBs Brandon Weeden and T.J.   Texans | Lamar Miller OK after injury scare    Sun Aug 7, 10:11 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller (ankle) appeared to tweak his ankle during practice Saturday, Aug. 6, but continued to participate after being examined by trainers and having the ankle taped up. Both Miller and head coach Bill O'Brien claimed he was fine.

Footballguys view: Miller has never had the full bellcow workload the Texans are planning on giving him this year. The Dolphins seemed reluctant to push him to his limit, and worries about his durability could be a reason why. Seeing Miller play through minor injuries like this one is a good sign.

Texans | Houston hasn't talks with DeAndre Hopkins    Sat Aug 6, 01:48 PM

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith said the team has not started discussions with WR DeAndre Hopkins on a new contract. 'There is not a negotiation happening at this point,' Smith said on NFL Network's Inside Training Camp Live. 'He's under contract for two more years.'

Footballguys view: The Texans have a rule of not negotiating with a player who has two years remaining on his contract...but they did make an exception for J.J. Watt and they should follow suit with Hopkins. Set to make just over $9 million during the next two years combined, Hopkins is underpaid. We'll see if the two sides can work something out and not risk fracturing the relationship with a contract squabble.
