Texans | Houston parts ways with Brian Cushing    Tue Feb 20, 12:17 PM

Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing was officially released Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Footballguys view: No surprise here as the Texans have moved on from Cushing with the emergence of guys like Zach Cunningham and Dylan Cole. Perhaps new Titans head coach Mike Vrabel (and former Texans DC) will snare Cushing to help out their defense in 2018.

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz said he is considering retirement after suffering three concussions in 2017. He is also considering sitting out the 2018 season and coming back later.

Footballguys view: Concussions were a huge problem for Fiedorowicz and he only played in five games in 2017. A third-round pick in 2014, Fiedorowicz may be done playing football. Expect the Texans to look for help at the position in the draft or free agency.

Texans | Malcolm Butler of interest to DeAndre Hopkins    Mon Feb 5, 04:11 PM

New England Patriots impending free-agent CB Malcolm Butler was reached out to on Twitter by Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins. Butler was benched in Super Bowl LII and is set to become a free agent this offseason.

Footballguys view: Butler didn't play on defense in the Super Bowl despite the fact that he played more snaps than any defensive player for the Pats during the regular season. Set to be a free agent in March, Butler should have more than a few suitors - perhaps including the Texans.

Texans | Deshaun Watson excited for training camp    Thu Feb 1, 02:26 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) is looking forward to training camp this offseason because he will be so much more comfortable in his second year. The dual-threat quarterback said his head was spinning last year, but now he knows what he'll need to accomplish before the season commences. As reported previously, Watson is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and could participate in organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Watson was well on his way to a potential Rookie of the Year award before his injury. It looks like head coach Bill O'Brien finally nailed the quarterback position, and Houston should be excited for next year.

Footballguys view: Joseph's play fell off in 2017, and he's going to be 34 in April. He and the team had talks before the season, but it appears Joseph wants to see what a potentially weak free agent cornerback market will yield for him in terms of a new contract.

Texans | Houston hires John Pagano    Fri Jan 26, 04:51 PM

The Houston Texans have hired former Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator John Pagano as a defensive assistant. Pagano will be coaching the team's outside linebackers.

Footballguys view: Pagano will take over some of the duties that Mike Vrabel vacated when he left to become the head coach of the Titans. He'll oversee a talented duo of OLBs that benefits from the disruption JJ Watt creates on the interior defensive line.

Texans | Romeo Crennel officially DC again    Fri Jan 26, 12:56 AM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans assistant head coach Romeo Crennel has officially added the title of defensive coordinator. Crennel was the team's DC from 2014 to 2016 before stepping into a modified role last season.

Footballguys view: The Texans defense crumbled without JJ Watt and Whitney Mercilus last year. Jadeveon Clowney did make some big steps forward, so if the team can have all three healthy next season, that's a great start for Crennel, who oversaw some borderline dominant game from this unit with a much less impactful Clowney during his stint as defensive coordinator.

Texans | Romeo Crennel expected to be DC    Sat Jan 20, 06:37 PM

Houston Texans assistant head coach Romeo Crennel is expected to take over as the team's defensive coordinator, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With Mike Vrabel moving on to be the head coach of the Titans, the Texans need to find someone to run their defense. Crennel held the position with the Texans until he was promoted to assistant head coach last year. The Texans are coaching the Senior Bowl next week, so moving Crennel over makes sense.

Texans | Houston hiring Brad Seely    Wed Jan 17, 03:12 PM

Former Oakland Raiders special teams coach Brad Seely is being hired by the Houston Texans for the same position, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Texans special teams play was an area they wanted to improve, and the team let Larry Izzo go after four years of being in charge of that unit. Seely was a special teams coach under Bill Belichick for ten years, including two with Texans head coach Bill O'Brien on the staff.

The Houston Texans parted ways with director of football operations Jason Lowrey on Tuesday, Jan. 16, according to a source.

Texans | Brian Gaine named Houston GM    Sat Jan 13, 10:32 AM

Confirming a previous report, the Houston Texans hired Buffalo Bills vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine to be their new general manager Saturday, Jan. 13. He will receive a five-year contract.

Footballguys view: Gaine gets the same contract length that head coach Bill O'Brien was extended to recently. He was the Texans Director of Player Personnel before taking a job with the Bills last year. Gaine knows the roster, knows the team and gets to take over a squad with plenty of talent.

Texans | Bill O'Brien receives contract extension    Sat Jan 13, 10:29 AM

The Houston Texans signed head coach Bill O'Brien to a four-year contract extension Saturday, Jan. 13, according to a source. He is now under contract through the 2022 season.

Footballguys view: O'Brien and new GM Brian Gaine are locked in for the next five years. In four seasons, O'Brien has a losing record (31-33) as the Texans head coach. With a healthy Deshaun Watson and plenty of offensive talent, the Texans could get back into the playoffs next season.

The Houston Texans are expected to hire Buffalo Bills vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine as their next general manager, according to sources.

Footballguys view: With Rick Smith taking an extended leave of absence, the favorite to land the job was Gaine. Formerly their Director of Player Personnel (2014-2016), Gaine was with the Bills for only the 2017 season.

Texans | Will McClay not interested in GM job    Sun Jan 7, 02:44 PM

Texans | Brian Gaine top candidate for GM    Sun Jan 7, 01:57 PM

Buffalo Bills vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine is considered the leading candidate for the Houston Texans general manager position, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The move makes sense as Gaine was the Texans Director of Player Personnel before he took his job with the Bills in 2017. Gaine was with the Texans when most of the players were put in place. He knows the culture and could make the transition from Rick Smith (who is taking an extended leave of absence) seamless.

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins caught 13 touchdown passes in 2017, three more than anyone else in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Texans here. Watson had surgery in early November to repair the injury and it's crazy to think he could participate in OTAs. Even if he is ready to work in the spring, the Texans will be cautious and take it easy on Watson as they get ready for the 2018 season.

The Houston Texans 'have interest' in Buffalo Bills vice president of player personnel Brian Gaine and New England Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio for their general manager opening.

Footballguys view: Gaine would make a lot of sense for the Texans as he worked for the team from 2014-2016 before leaving for his job in Buffalo. He's worked under Smith and understands the makeup of the team as he was there when most of the roster was built/acquired. Caserio has spent 15 years working in the personnel department for the Patriots.

Footballguys view: Pope came out of Jacksonville State as a UDFA in 2016 and was picked up by the Seahawks. He's bounced around since then (including two stints with Seattle) and has flashed a bit in the preseason. At 5'9" 207 pounds, Pope is a change-of-pace back with great foot frequency who can contribute as a runner, receiver or return man.
