Texans | Will meet with Teddy Bridgewater    Fri Apr 18, 01:20 PM

The Houston Texans will meet with Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater next week.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater is still an option for the Texans at number one overall. He's incredibly accurate, has high football intelligence and he does a good job of distributing the football evenly around the field.

  Texans | Pick up J.J. Watt's option    Thu Apr 17, 08:19 PM

The Houston Texans have officially exercised the fifth-year option in DE J.J. Watt's contract.

Footballguys view: It's smart to lock up the best defensive lineman in the game, even if you want to draft Jadeveon Clowney as well. Watt is a freak and the Texans do not want him destroying offensive lines for anyone other than themselves.

Texans | Brian Cushing medically cleared    Thu Apr 17, 01:24 PM

Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing (knee) was medically cleared Thursday, April 17.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Texans, who hope he can be healthy all year round. Cushing and JJ Watt make a great combo - would adding Jadeveon Clowney make it even more effective?

Texans | May look to take RB in middle rounds    Wed Apr 16, 04:36 PM

The Houston Texans may consider selecting a running back during the middle rounds of the 2014 NFL Draft that could become RB Arian Foster's backup in the future.

Footballguys view: With Ben Tate moving on in free agency to the Browns, the Texans need a backup behind Foster. The draft is full of running backs with different styles. During the middle rounds there will still be quality players left at the position.

Texans | Moving Ricardo Matthews to NT    Wed Apr 16, 02:41 PM

The Houston Texans will be moving DE Ricardo Matthews to nose tackle in their 3-4 defensive alignment. Matthews played defensive end during his last four seasons.

Texans | Khalil Mack will visit    Mon Apr 14, 02:46 PM

The Houston Texans will meet with Buffalo LB Khalil Mack at some point next week.

Footballguys view: There are some in the scouting community who prefer Mack to DE Jadaveon Clowney (South Carolina). Mack is a strong/athletic pass-rusher who can get after the quarterback in multiple ways. He can cover and get to the ball quickly. Mack is certainly an option for the Texans at the top overall pick.

Texans | Meet with Logan Thomas    Sat Apr 12, 11:16 AM

The Houston Texans have met with or worked out Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas this offseason.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a mid- or late-round quarterback with a raw skill set. He's big, has a strong arm and he can keep plays alive with his feet. Thomas is not accurate and needs to work on his decision making from the pocket. The upside has always been there with Thomas, but he didn't really develop as a collegian and he didn't play up to his potential. The Texans may do what Washington did in 2012. They could take a QB at the top of the draft, then another QB later in the draft.

Texans | Arian Foster expects to be ready for workouts    Thu Apr 10, 10:06 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (back) said he will be able to participate once offseason workouts begin.

Footballguys view: Having Foster back to 100 percent will really help the Texans. They may have a rookie quarterback starting at the beginning of the season, so they could lean on the ground game even more in 2014.

Texans | Rick Smith attends LSU Pro Day    Wed Apr 9, 03:32 PM

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith was present for the Louisiana State Pro Day Wednesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Texans could be there to see QB Zach Mettenberger. The big-armed pocket passer is likely a second-round pick. He'll be an option for teams who pass on a QB in the first round.

Texans | Andre Brown agrees to terms    Mon Apr 7, 04:16 PM

The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Andre Brown (Giants). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: With Ben Tate (Browns) moving on in free agency, the Texans had a need to find a backup running back. Brown will now compete for the backup job behind Arian Foster.

Texans | Johnny Manziel to visit in a few weeks    Mon Apr 7, 03:14 PM

Updating a previous report, the Houston Texans are scheduled to meet with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel Monday, April 21, and Tuesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Manziel is a bit of an odd fit for Bill O'Brien's system. He's an athletic quarterback who can keep plays alive with his feet. Manziel can make something out of nothing because in a worst-case scenario he can pick up chunks of yards by scrambling. O'Brien likes classic pocket passers, and that's not what Manziel is. Any team that selects Manziel will have to craft an offense that caters to his unique skill set.

Texans | Blake Bortles visiting next week    Mon Apr 7, 03:09 PM

Updating a previous report, the Houston Texans are scheduled to meet with Central Florida QB Blake Bortles Tuesday, April 15, and Wednesday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Bortles could be the number one overall pick. He's a fine fit for Bill O'Brien's system. Bortles has the ability to stand in the pocket and deliver the football. He's like Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers) because when the play isn't there, Bortles can run around to make a play.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick No. 1 QB for now    Mon Apr 7, 02:48 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick would be the team's starting quarterback if the regular season started today.

Footballguys view: That won't last for long. The Texans are going to select a quarterback at some time in the first two rounds of the draft.

Texans | Andre Brown visits    Mon Apr 7, 09:52 AM

The Houston Texans are visiting with free-agent RB Andre Brown (Giants) Monday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Brown hasn't been able to attract much interest on the open market. His age and War and Peace like injury history are likely held against him. With Ben Tate (Browns) moving on in free agency, the Texans could add a guy like Brown to be a backup behind Arian Foster.

Texans | Would use Jadeveon Clowney as OLB    Wed Apr 2, 06:55 PM

Texans | Teddy Bridgewater to visit    Wed Apr 2, 03:41 PM

The Houston Texans are scheduled to bring in Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater for another visit.

Footballguys view: Even though he had an average pro day, Bridgewater is still very much in play for the top pick in the draft. He's the most accurate (and arguably the smartest) quarterback in this class. Bridgewater can make every throw in the NFL even though he doesn't have a rocket arm. He understands coverage, and Bridgewater had the liberty to change plays at the line of scrimmage in college. Bridgewater is our top quarterback in the 2014 NFL draft.

Link to story

Texans | Blake Bortles to visit    Wed Apr 2, 03:41 PM

The Houston Texans are scheduled to bring in Central Florida QB Blake Bortles for another visit.

Footballguys view: Bortles might be the favorite for the number one pick at this time. He's big, strong-armed and athletic enough to keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. Bortles is essentially a poor man's version of Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers). New Texans head coach Bill O'Brien loves big pocket quarterbacks, and Borltes is a perfect fit for that physical skill set.

Link to story

Texans | Johnny Manziel to visit    Wed Apr 2, 03:40 PM

The Houston Texans are scheduled to bring in Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel for another visit.

Footballguys view: Manziel is the most hotly debated quarterback in the entire draft. He has elite scrambling ability, and Manziel can really hurt a defense with his legs. His arm strength is good enough, and he has good touch on deep passes when his feet are set. Manziel throws off his back foot too often under pressure, and there are times he looks to scramble instead of making the quick throw to the middle. There's many things to like with Manziel, but there's also many things to be seriously concerned about.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney to visit    Wed Apr 2, 03:40 PM

The Houston Texans are scheduled to bring in South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney for another visit.

Texans | Have dinner with Jadeveon Clowney    Wed Apr 2, 01:30 PM

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith, head coach Bill O'Brien and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel had dinner with South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney Tuesday, April 1.

Texans | Have strong presence at Jadeveon Clowney's Pro Day    Wed Apr 2, 12:22 PM

Houston Texans general manager Rick Smith, head coach Bill O'Brien and defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel attended the South Carolina Pro Day Wednesday, April 2, to watch DE Jadeveon Clowney work out.

Footballguys view: The Texans have the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Clowney is certainly in play to be the top selection. He's an elite pass-rusher who plays with a fierce and violent style. There are concerns about his motivation after a 2013 season that was far less productive (on paper) than his breakout 2012 season at South Carolina.

The Houston Texans released FS Danieal Manning Monday, March 31, according to a league source. The Texans had asked Manning to restructure his deal to reduce his salary cap hit last week. Manning's agent said his client was willing to take a pay cut, but not at the level the team was asking for.

Texans | Meeting with Johnny Manziel    Thu Mar 27, 01:35 PM

The Houston Texans are meeting privately with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel Thursday, March 27.

Footballguys view: The Texans keep us guessing with a visit with the homegrown talent. Manziel would be an interesting fit for an offense with Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins--both of whom could help bail him out on occasion like Mike Evans did--and a strong ground game with Arian Foster.

Texans | Coach does not see a lot of difference in top QBs    Mon Mar 24, 02:54 PM

Houston Texans QB Bill O'Brien said he does not see a lot of difference when he evaluates Central Florida QB Blake Bortles, Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater and Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel. O'Brien said there are 10 to 12 good quarterbacks he will need to evaluate from this draft class.

Footballguys view: O'Brien covets pocket passers, and that's why Blake Bortles (UCF) could be his favorite. Bortles has the arm to make every throw in the NFL, and he can pick up yards with his feet if the play breaks down. Don't be surprised if Bortles is the top pick in the 2014 NFL draft.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick signing    Thu Mar 20, 06:29 PM

The Houston Texans are signing free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Titans) to an undisclosed two-year deal Thursday, March 20, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Well, one hopes this isn't Bill O'Brien's great plan because we've seen Fitz and he's not a starting quarterback. This may be a sign Matt Schaub is being moved though, as a veteran backup would be a good thing in that case. Then again, we're not sure Fitzpatrick is a good backup either.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick to visit    Thu Mar 20, 03:59 PM

The Houston Texans will visit with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Titans) Thursday, March 20.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick couldn't a stick in Tennessee, odds are he won't be a vast improvement in Houston--unless as we've heard, Schaub will be moved. In which case a veteran backup is useful.

Texans | In play for top QBs    Wed Mar 19, 03:17 PM

The Houston Texans remain in play to select all three of the top quarterbacks in this year's draft with the No. 1 overall selection. The top quarterbacks include Central Florida QB Blake Bortles, Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel and Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater.

Texans | Danieal Manning supports Jadeveon Clowney selection    Wed Mar 19, 03:16 PM

Houston Texans FS Danieal Manning is endorsing the team taking South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney with the top overall choice in the upcoming NFL Draft. 'I would love to see somebody like him,' Manning said. 'I don't think there's a lot of players in the draft like him.'

Texans | To meet with Blake Bortles    Tue Mar 18, 04:50 PM

The Houston Texans plan to meet with Central Florida QB Blake Bortles after his pro day Wednesday, March 19.

Footballguys view: Bortles is considered the QB most likely to go #1 because of rumors of the Texans interest in him, and his more ideal size than Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater. If Bortles doesn't go #1, he may fall all the way to the Vikings at #8.

Link to story

Texans | Met with Teddy Bridgewater    Tue Mar 18, 04:48 PM

The Houston Texans privately met with Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater Tuesday, March 18.

Footballguys view: Bridgewater's stock has been sliding in the public perception, but many draft analysts still think Bridgewater is the QB most deserving of the #1 pick. We'll probably be in suspense right up until the moment the pick is announced.

Texans | Sign Jerrell Powe     Tue Mar 18, 04:44 PM

The Houston Texans signed DT Jerrell Powe (Chiefs) Tuesday, March 18. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Powe will be a much more suitable body type for a 3-4 nose tackle than the now Miami Dolphin Earl Mitchell that the Texans were using there last year.

Texans | Expected to have interest in Mark Sanchez    Mon Mar 17, 04:12 PM

The Houston Texans are expected to show interest in New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez if he is released this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Texans first have to take of business with Matt Schaub. Once they do that (and the Jets release Sanchez), then we could see Sanchez in Houston.

Texans | Still looking to move Matt Schaub    Mon Mar 17, 03:31 PM

The Houston Texans are still looking to trade QB Matt Schaub. The Oakland Raiders and Cleveland Browns have shown some interest in Schaub.

Footballguys view: We'd be surprised if they were able to trade Schaub. The Raiders are unlikely to trade for Schaub, but they would be interested if he was on the open market.
