Texans | Duane Brown will add weight Fri Mar 7, 07:07 PM
Houston Texans OT Duane Brown said he will look to add weight this offseason after losing around 12 to 15 pounds last offseason. Brown was faster and improved his range after losing the weight but also struggled with moving defenders backwards and maintaining his block.Link to story
Texans | An option for Michael Vick Fri Mar 7, 01:30 PM
The Houston Texans are a potential landing spot for Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent QB Michael Vick this offseason.
|Footballguys view: Vick may not fit the Bill O'Brien system. At Penn State (and with the Patriots) O'Brien worked with traditional pocket passers who can make plays with their arm first and foremost. We'd be surprised if this happens.|

The Houston Texans have claimed LB Paul Hazel off waivers from the Cleveland Browns. The team also waived LB Evan Frierson.Link to story
Texans | Considering three QBs with top pick Thu Mar 6, 11:34 PM
The Houston Texans are seriously considering Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater, Central Florida QB Blake Bortles and Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel as options for the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Texans need a franchise quarterback, and they will look hard at each one of these prospects. The best fit for the Bill O'Brien system may be Blake Bortles. Teddy Bridgewater is more accurate, and Johnny Manziel is more athletic than Bortles, but O'Brien may want a big pocket passer.|
Texans | Will meet with Blake Bortles Thu Mar 6, 10:04 PM
Central Florida QB Blake Bortles said he will meet with the Houston Texans in the days following his Pro Day March 19.
|Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Bortles may be the favorite to be the number one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft. New Texans head coach Bill O'Brien played against Bortles last year and came away impressed with the young quarterback. He has good size, a strong arm and Bortles can keep plays alive with his feet.|
Texans | Thinking about keeping Matt Schaub Thu Mar 6, 01:11 PM
The Houston Texans are thinking about keeping QB Matt Schaub. It would still be surprising if they did keep him.
|Footballguys view: It's as much about keeping things cloudy as it is a genuine interest in Schaub. If they cut him, it's a clear signal they're going quarterback early in the draft--right now the team is more interested in keeping people guessing. It may also play out that whomever they take needs to sit a year and Schaub is the transition quarterback.|

Texans | Likely landing spot for Matt Cassel Wed Mar 5, 11:14 PM
Minnesota Vikings impending free-agent QB Matt Cassel continues to talk to the team about a potential return, but nothing is close. It appears the likely landing spot for Cassel will be with the Houston Texans, once he hits the open market Tuesday, March 11.
|Footballguys view: Bill O'Brien came from the Patriots, just like Cassel. The two could be reunited in Houston. The Texans need a veteran backup as they are likely to select a quarterback in the 2014 NFL draft. With the number one overall pick, the Texans could add a guy like Blake Bortles (UCF).|

Texans | Former GM unsure if Jadeveon Clowney a fit Wed Mar 5, 02:16 PM
Former Cleveland Browns general manager Phil Savage said he is not sure South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney would fit well in the Houston Texans 3-4 defensive alignment. 'The Texans are going to be playing a 3-4 defense, so that means he's going to be a 3-4 defensive end or an outside backer,' Savage said. 'I don't particularly think he forecasts well as an outside backer up on his feet rushing the edge, because I do think there is some lateral tightness in his athletic ability.'
|Footballguys view: Clowney is regarded as the top pass-rusher this year, and he's a candidate to go number one overall. We'll see if the Texans take a quarterback like Blake Bortles (UCF) in that spot.|
Texans | Working to sign Garrett Graham Tue Mar 4, 09:38 AM
The Houston Texans are working to sign impending free-agent TE Garrett Graham before he hits the open market.
|Footballguys view: Owen Daniels is not long for fantasy relevance, although the departure of Gary Kubiak could result in a much less tight end-friendly system, so it might not be a good idea to chase Graham in dynasty leagues if he re-signs.|

Texans | Likely to draft a QB Mon Mar 3, 08:13 AM
Houston Texans insider John McClain said he would be shocked if the Houston Texans do not select a quarterback with the first pick in the NFL Draft, despite most mock drafts have them pegged to take South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney.
|Footballguys view: The Texans need to find a franchise quarterback. With the number one overall pick they can pick anyone they like. It seems like Blake Bortles (UCF) is the frontrunner at this time.|

Texans | Will consider trading top pick Wed Feb 26, 01:29 PM
The Houston Texans will entertain the idea of trading the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. The team walked away from the NFL Scouting Combine with the knowledge they have options with the first pick and will not be limited to selecting a quarterback or South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney.
|Footballguys view: If the Texans aren't in love with Clowney or a quarterback, this is easily the smart move, even if they sell the pick for less than market value - assuming they can stay in the elite group of 5-7 players at the top of this draft after moving down.|
Texans | Visited with Blake Bortles Tue Feb 25, 11:16 AM
Central Florida QB Blake Bortles was formally interviewed by the Houston Texans at the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: New Texans head coach Bill O'Brien played against Bortles last year. He also has a personal connection with Bortles' college coach George O'Leary. O'Brien wants a big, strong-armed, pocket passer and that's why Bortles could be the number one overall pick.|
Texans | Meet with Johnny Manziel Mon Feb 24, 02:35 PM
The Houston Texans met with Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel at the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: New head coach Bill O'Brien has an offensive system that better fits a classic pocket passer. They are doing their due diligence by looking at Manziel, but his sandlot stylings may not fit what O'Brien wants to do on offense.|
Texans | Do not want J.J. Watt to reach free agency Mon Feb 24, 03:45 AM
Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt is entering the fourth and final year of his rookie contract, and the Texans are getting closer to being forced to make a decision about the star defensive lineman's future. The team has the ability to pick up the team option for a fifth year. The team does not Watt to reach free agency.
|Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Texans will work diligently to find a new agreement with Watt.|

Texans | Interested in Teddy Bridgewater Sat Feb 22, 04:14 PM
Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater said he is scheduled to meet with the Houston Texans Saturday, Feb. 22, at the NFL Scouting Combine.
|Footballguys view: Given how much new head coach Bill O'Brien talked about getting the right fit for players and coaches, it makes all the sense in the world that they will talk to all three main quarterbacks as well as several ones who are not top prospects. The Texans want to get this right. In Houston, Bridgewater would get some outstanding weapons around him and could succeed very quickly.|

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney would have to play linebacker Fri Feb 21, 04:04 PM
South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney would have to play strong side linebacker in the team's 3-4 defense, according to one general manager.
|Footballguys view: Clowney can flat out dominate. Wherever he plays on the field, he can be an impact player who is incredibly difficult to block.|
Texans | No decision on Matt Schaub Fri Feb 21, 03:23 PM
Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said the team has not made a decision on whether to cut QB Matt Schaub. 'There's different stages to the process. You don't get to know someone during a dead period,' O'Brien said.
|Footballguys view: We're fairly certain the team is moving on from the Schaub era. Cutting Schaub would save the team $4 million against the salary cap.|

Texans | Andre Johnson has a lot left Wed Feb 19, 08:41 AM
Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson said he's not thinking about retirement any time soon.
|Footballguys view: Johnson was still playing at his usual elite level in 2013 through quarterback and team turmoil, but his red zone breakout with five scores in two games was short-lived. He'll be a mid-low WR1 in PPR leagues, but uncertainty at quarterback is hurting his value. He might still be a good buy in dynasty leagues if he is on a team that wants to rebuild.|

Texans | Andre Johnson says wrist is fine Thu Feb 13, 11:28 PM
Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson said the wrist injury that forced him to miss the Pro Bowl has completely healed. Johnson said he played several weeks with the sore wrist.
|Footballguys view: A healthy star wide receiver is nothing but good news for the offense. We'll see if a rookie like Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville) or Blake Bortles (Central Florida) is tossing passes to Johnson in 2014.|

Texans | Andre Johnson would trade top pick Thu Feb 13, 07:42 PM
Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson said he would trade the first overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft if he was in charge of the team.
|Footballguys view: There's no consensus number one overall pick. Some think the Texans are going to select quarterback Blake Bortles (UCF) at the top of the draft. They certainly need a quarterback to build around, regardless of what they do at number one overall.|

Texans | Wade Phillips wanted Johnny Manziel Thu Feb 6, 04:49 PM
Former Houston Texans defensive coordinator and interim head coach Wade Phillips said he endorsed the idea to draft Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel during the interview with the team to become the permanent head coach. 'When I did the interview with the McNairs (in late December), I told them they ought to take Johnny Football,' Phillips said. 'That's what I told them, and I'm sitting here now without a job.'
|Footballguys view: We'll be hearing the debate all during the draft process. Do the Texans take a local Texas boy with amazing ability and some questions off the field or the solid quarterback prospect with a tad less upside but a lot more reliability? You'll hear opinions and rumors during the next four months--take it all with a grain of salt.|
Texans | Make coaching announcements Thu Feb 6, 02:04 PM

Texans | Interested in two quarterbacks with top pick Tue Feb 4, 02:26 PM
The Houston Texans are interested in Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel and Central Florida QB Blake Bortles with the top pick in the NFL draft.
|Footballguys view: Manziel would fit the Kyle Shanahan system better. He's more athletic than Bortles, and "Johnny Football" can keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. Bortles is a big quarterback who sees the field well, and his best attribute is performance from the pocket under duress.|
Texans | Three could be back despite high cap numbers Sat Feb 1, 03:12 PM
Houston Texans CB Johnathan Joseph, TE Owen Daniels and FS Danieal Manning could return next season even though they have high salary cap figures. Texans | Romeo Crennel officially hired Mon Jan 20, 12:02 PM
The Houston Texans officially hired Romeo Crennel as their new defensive coordinator to an undisclosed three-year deal Monday, Jan. 20.
|Footballguys view: Crennel is a very strong 3-4 defensive coordinator, even if it has led to him getting head coaching jobs that seemed to overwhelm him. He should keep the Texans defense near the top of yardage allowed rankings again this year.|
Texans | To hire Romeo Crennel as DC Fri Jan 17, 03:41 PM
The Houston Texans will hire former Kansas City Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel as their defensive coordinator next week.
|Footballguys view: This move was expected for a while now. Crennel was coaching at the Shrine Game this week, and will lead the West team on Saturday. He's a quality defensive coordinator, but Crennel is not head coaching material.|
Texans | Bill O'Brien will call plays Fri Jan 17, 03:20 PM

Texans | Expected to take Blake Bortles with top pick? Tue Jan 14, 06:29 PM
A source thinks Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien is expected to draft University of Central Florida QB Blake Bortles with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. They could also go with Louisiana State University QB Zach Mettenberger at the top of the second round.
|Footballguys view: Bortles is a bit rough around the edges to select at number one overall. He's big, athletic, has a strong arm and reminds many in the scouting community of a poor man's version of Ben Roethlisberger. Bortles has mechanical issues that need cleaned up. He also takes a bit of time to get started.|
Texans | Jadaveon Clowney could work with J.J. Watt Tue Jan 14, 12:51 PM
If the Houston Texans draft DE Jadaveon Clowney with the top overall draft pick, he would work closely with DE J.J. Watt. Owner Bob McNair said Watt could be the perfect mentor for Clowney. 'He's not a J.J. Watt,' McNair said. 'J.J. didn't have that natural (ability). He worked. He developed his. I said to J.J., 'I don't know what will happen but if we get Clowney, we want you to instill in him the same kind of work habits that you have.' He said, 'Well, if he's in the same room with me, he'll have them.'' McNair said the team could also trade the top pick.
|Footballguys view: Clowney's physical ability is off the charts. If motivated, he can become an elite-level pass rusher in the pros. Working with Watt could perhaps get him incredibly focused on his upside.|

Texans | Mike Munchak to interview for OL coaching job Thu Jan 9, 07:59 PM
The Houston Texans are scheduled to interview former Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak for their offensive line coaching position Friday, Jan. 10.
|Footballguys view: Munchak is a solid offensive line coach and should land a job somewhere if not in Houston. If he does land this job, the question becomes whether the Texans might scrap the zone-blocking system they have in place?|
Texans | Mike Vrabel joining coaching staff Thu Jan 9, 06:26 PM
