Texans | Jadeveon Clowney unlikely to reach deal    Mon Feb 18, 09:44 AM

Houston Texans impending free-agent LB Jadeveon Clowney is unlikely to receive a long-term deal, in the opinion of MMQB's Peter King, because he's not the worker bee that some others are on defense.

Footballguys view: Clowney is looking to be paid as a top-5 player at his position, and he's deserving of such a contract. The Texans can get more time to work out a new deal with Clowney if they place the one-year franchise tag on him. He will have to sign that tag (or get a long-term deal) by sometime in mid-July if actually tagged.

Texans | Tag expected for Jadeveon Clowney    Sat Feb 16, 07:30 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent DE/LB Jadeveon Clowney likely will receive the franchise tag this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Texans aren't going to let Clowney go anywhere. Earlier this year, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported an extension could be likely. Either way, we'd be shocked if Clowney was playing somewhere other than Houston in 2019.

Texans | Keke Coutee feeling 100 percent    Thu Feb 14, 12:06 PM

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (hamstring) said Thursday, Feb. 14, he is almost fully recovered from the chronic hamstring injuries which limited him miss 10 of the Texans' 17 regular-season/playoff games as a rookie this past season.

Footballguys view: Good news for Coutee as the Texans could use his speed as a no.3 WR behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller. 'I'm feeling great,' Coutee said. 'I'm feeling really good. I'm feeling like myself. The hamstring is good. I'm still resting a little bit. I'm going to start back training soon, but it's 100 percent.'

Texans | Demaryius Thomas officially cut    Tue Feb 12, 05:41 PM

Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles') was officially released Tuesday, Feb. 12, with a failed physical designation.

Footballguys view: Thomas was traded to the Texans at the trade deadline last year but he was barely able to make an impact due to this Achilles' injury. His release created $14 million more in Houston's salary cap space.

Texans | Demaryius Thomas being cut    Tue Feb 12, 09:19 AM

Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles') will be cut Tuesday, Feb. 12.

Footballguys view: At the trade deadline, the Texans sent a fourth-round pick to the Broncos for Thomas. He ended up getting hurt and could not contribute down the stretch. He has no timetable for his return from a torn left Achilles', but he returned from a torn right Achilles' in six months after his rookie season.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins set sure-hands record    Sun Feb 10, 02:51 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins set a Pro Football Focus-era record (since 2006) for the most catchable targets (105) without a drop (minimum 40 targets) in 2018.

Footballguys view: Hopkins is one of the most reliable assets in the game, and Fantasy GMs know that he's a set-it-and-forget-it WR1 each week. He'll continue to be the centerpiece of the Texans passing attack in 2019.

Texans | Houston a landing spot for Le'Veon Bell?    Sat Feb 9, 09:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell could be pursued by the Houston Texans this offseason in order to 'elevate' the offense to next level, according to Mike Wells of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: That would be great for the Texans and it would take some of the pressure off of QB Deshaun Watson. Bell would give the team another dangerous receiver and he could lead the way as a runner. Several teams should be interested in Bell...now we just need to see whether or not the Steelers let him go or try to put the transition tag on him.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman still in the plans    Fri Feb 8, 11:12 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman still has a bright future with the team, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'So, hopefully with a good offseason, here's a guy that can really, really be an excellent player in this league,' O'Brien said.

Footballguys view: Lamar Miller's time with the team may be coming to a close. Releasing Miller would free up $6.2 million in cap space with just $1 million in dead money. Foreman would have a much larger role without Miller in front of him on the depth chart.

Texans | Clay Hampton hired by Houston    Tue Jan 29, 04:13 PM

Former New York Jets senior director of football operations Clay Hampton was hired by the Houston Texans Tuesday, Jan. 29, as director of football operations.

Footballguys view: Texans GM Brian Gaine was a tight end and scout with the Jets during Hampton's 30 run with the team that started with him as a ball boy and ended with him as senior director of football operations.

Texans | Brian Cushing returns as strength coach    Tue Jan 29, 12:53 PM

Retired Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing on Tuesday, Jan. 29, was hired as as a member of the team's strength and conditioning staff and also will assist the defensive coaching staff.

Footballguys view: This is an interesting hire considering Cushing's history with strength and conditioning, but it certainly helps to have a former player who has experience with some of the current starters.

Texans | Demaryius Thomas may be cap casualty    Mon Jan 28, 08:17 PM

Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas is a candidate to be released this offseason since the Texans would save $14 million in salary cap space if he is released, according to Spotrac.com.

Footballguys view: Thomas should be released unless he takes a big pay cut and he might be waiting until the preseason to be signed as he comes back from an achilles rupture. His useful fantasy days could be over.

Texans | Seantrel Henderson financial details    Sat Jan 26, 10:21 AM

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans OT Seantrel Henderson's one-year, $4.5 million contract includes a base salary of $1.5 million, of which only $1 million is guaranteed for skill, injury and salary cap. He is due a $500,000 roster bonus on the third day of the new league year and an additional $500,000 if he is on the 46-man active roster for 12 or more games during the 2019 season. Henderson is also slated to receive an extra $2 million roster bonus, to be paid out at $125,000 per game, for every game that he is on the 46-man roster.

Texans | Lamar Miller a possible cap casualty    Fri Jan 25, 02:15 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller has only $1 million of guaranteed money left on his contract, and the team could elect to release him, according to Spotrac. The move would save more than $6 million in cap room.

Footballguys view: The move would not be a surprising one given Miller's cap hit, age and injury history. The Texans could choose to move on from Miller and find another starting running back through the draft. They also have D'Onta Foreman waiting in the wings for a larger opportunity (if he stays healthy).

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins was big part of offense    Wed Jan 16, 11:26 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins was targeted 163 times during the regular season while the second highest total on the team was 45 targets.

Footballguys view: The headline can be filed under 'in other news, water is wet.' Hopkins is their passing game, and he's one of the best in the game. The team needs to keep feeding him the rock...and protect QB Deshaun Watson better...in 2019.

Texans | Brandon Weeden hopes to return    Wed Jan 16, 11:25 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent QB Brandon Weeden said he hopes to re-sign with the Texans this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Texans had Weeden and Joe Webb behind Deshaun Watson this year. With Weeden potentially leaving in free agency, the Texans have to find some quarterback talent. They could always just have Weeden stick around for a good price.

Houston Texans impending free-agent DE Jadeveon Clowney likely will receive the franchise tag this offseason if the two sides are not able to reach a long-term deal.

Texans | Houston inks Rick Leonard to futures deal    Tue Jan 8, 03:29 PM

Footballguys view: Ferguson is a versatile all-purpose back who can make defenders miss in the open field. He's mainly been with the Colts since coming into the league as an undrafted free agent out of Ilinois in 2016. We'll monitor him in the deepest dynasty formats.

Texans | Demaryius Thomas not ready to retire    Mon Jan 7, 12:05 PM

Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles') told the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson he's 'not thinking about retirement' and 'would love to finish my career (with the Texans).'

Footballguys view: Thomas wants to stay with the Texans and he's got one year left on his contract. It's a helluva year on paper as Thomas is set to make $14 million in 2019...but there is zero left in dead money on his deal. That means he'll either restructure with the Texans or get released.

Houston Texans WR Demaryius Thomas (Achilles') said he hopes to return to the Texans next season.

Footballguys view: Thomas was traded to the Texans in 2018 and he made it through a few games before having his season cut short by an Achilles' injury. He's got a big cap number in 2019 and may have to restructure his deal if he wants to stay in Houston. Thomas is currently on the books for $14 million in 2019 but there is zero remaining in dead money. Expect him to rework his deal or get released this offseason.

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (shoulder) had his arm in a sling Sunday, Jan. 6, the day after suffering a Grade # AC joint sprain in a wild-card playoff loss to the Indianapolis Colts. Hopkins said he won't require offseason surgery.

Footballguys view: Great news for Hopkins here. He was limited most of the time on the injury report with various ailments all season long. Hopkins suffered a shoulder injury against the Colts and wasn't quite himself. We'll see him in the offseason program for the Texans and we'll also see Hopkins as a top wide receiver pick in 2019 fantasy drafts this summer.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins draws lofty praise    Sun Jan 6, 12:24 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins drew extensive praise Sunday, Jan. 6, in head coach Bill O'Brien's season-ending news conference. 'I don't think there was anybody better in the league,' O'Brien said. ' ... Every team knew that we were going to him on every play.'

Footballguys view: Hopkins gave it his all but was banged up in the loss to the Colts. He's a WR1 for Fantasy GMs and a no-brainer starter each and ever week. Expect him to be a first-round pick in PPR leagues this summer.

Texans | Keke Coutee officially questionable    Thu Jan 3, 05:05 PM

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (hamstring) fully participated in practice Thursday, Jan. 3, but is listed as questionable for the Wild Card playoff game.

Footballguys view: Coutee could be back in action for the Texans this week. A hamstring injury severely limited during his rookie season but the speed and run-after-the-catch ability he has when healthy can be quite dangerous. Having Coutee out there would be a boost for the Texans passing game.
