Texans | Will Fuller agrees to terms    Sun Jun 26, 10:58 AM

The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with WR Will Fuller on a four-year, $10.2 million contract, according to a source familiar with the terms of the deal. All first-round contracts include a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Fuller will compete with a reshaped Jaelen Strong to be the complement to DeAndre Hopkins outside with Cecil Shorts in the slot. Fuller's deep speed will give him a boom/bust fantasy profile, but if he can start, Hopkins should draw a lot of attention, freeing up Fuller for one-on-one matchups. As long as he can catch the ball consistently and not revert to body catching, Fuller should be an effective field stretcher.

Texans | Stephen Anderson likely to make roster?    Sat Jun 25, 03:58 PM

Houston Texans undrafted rookie free agent TE Stephen Anderson is projected to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Anderson is a new breed H-back/Move TE type whose main contributions will be in the passing game. He might not be active on game days this year if he makes the roster, but he has more fantasy upside than Ryan Griffin or C.J. Fiedorowicz. He's worth a roster spot in TE premium and very deep dynasty leagues.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz has improved    Sat Jun 25, 02:51 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz has made a lot of progress in the passing game this offseason, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'He's more instinctive. He knows the plays better. He's a really, really hard worker,' O'Brien said. 'For him, his true improvement and his true playing will come in training camp when you put the full pads on.' Fiedorowicz (hamstring) was injured earlier this offseason, but he has begun running again and should be good to go by training camp.

Footballguys view: The Texans wide receiver corps has been reloaded with Will Fuller in the first round this year and Jaelen Strong in the third round last year, so their tight end spot in a low volume pass offense is less attractive than ever. Ryan Griffin is still the better receiving prospect, but Fiedorowicz is the better two-way tight end, and he should lead the team in tight end snaps if he stays healthy.

Texans | Tyler Ervin should be ready for camp    Mon Jun 20, 07:25 PM

Houston Texans RB Tyler Ervin (quadriceps) missed some time this offseason because of a quadriceps injury but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Ervin has incredible speed, quickness and agility. He's able to change direction without losing much speed, and Ervin is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. The rookie is going to compete to be a change-of-pace back behind starter Lamar Miller.

Texans | Cecil Shorts pay cut update    Sat Jun 18, 01:18 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts still has a $15,625 per game active roster bonus up to $250,000. Shorts' $100,000 workout de-escalator was removed from his original deal, however. His new cap figure stands at $2.371 million, down from $3.421 million.

Texans | Kevin Johnson should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 18, 01:02 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) expects to be fully cleared for training camp after undergoing multiple surgeries this offseason. Johnson did not practice this offseason, but he has resume running and doing other individual drills. Johnson said he's feeling great after undergoing foot surgery to repair a Jones fracture, and a separate surgery for a broken wrist.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Johnson can be an impact player on defense. We love the fact that he's not the biggest CB but Johnson is incredibly feisty and does not back down from challenge.

Texans | Cecil Shorts takes pay cut    Sat Jun 18, 12:50 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts has agreed to a $1 million pay cut. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $2.7 million in 2016 but will now receive a $1.2 million base salary and $500,000 roster bonus.

Footballguys view: Shorts likely had to do this to insure his roster spot. The Texans added two WRs in the 2016 NFL draft and they've got second-year pro Jaelen Strong impressing this offseason. Shorts is currently WR2 on the depth chart opposite DeAndre Hopkins, but his hold on that job is tenuous.

Texans | Jaelen Strong a changed man    Thu Jun 16, 01:45 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong made an effort to slim down this offseason and change his diet. He also did a lot of running to drop 30 pounds. He also made a conscious effort to surround himself with better people after he was arrested in the offseason for marijuana. 'I definitely cut a lot of people out,' Strong said. 'A lot of people don't really need to know what's always going on with me. You've got to do what's best for yourself. And right now, I'm in the best shape I could be.' Head coach Bill O'Brien has already called Strong 'one of the most improved players on our football team.'

Footballguys view: Strong disappointed the coaching staff and with Will Fuller and Braxton Miller getting drafted, Strong has to put out his best effort. We still see Fuller and DeAndre Hopkins will get most of the snaps so even if he is doing well Strong isn't likely worth a roster spot this year and his ADP of WR93 tells us that others feel the same way right now.

Texans | Jaelen Strong turning heads    Wed Jun 15, 10:49 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong has been impressive during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, impressing with seemingly more scoring plays than anyone. He managed three touchdowns on just 14 receptions last season.

Footballguys view: There were rumors around the Draft that Strong had frustrated the coaching staff with his struggles in 2015, so he has a lot to lose, especially after the team took on rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller. Strong has reportedly changed his attitude with regards to dealing with criticism from the coaches as well. We'll see how this plays out, but he's likely no better than the third option behind DeAndre Hopkins and Fuller, and therefore not worth more than a deep roster spot.

Texans | Houston safety job will be hot battle    Wed Jun 15, 10:48 PM

Houston Texans FS Antonio Allen, SS Quintin Demps and youngsters S Kurtis Drummond and K.J. Dillon are all expected to battle for the starting spot in the secondary opposite CB Andre Hal. It is expected to be one of training camp's most fierce battles.

Texans | Jaelen Strong praised by coach    Tue Jun 14, 04:33 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong is 'probably one of the most improved players' on the Texans this year, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Strong has always had tremendous upside as a pass-catcher in the NFL. He's lost about 20 pounds this offseason in an effort to be lighter and quicker. Strong plays like a basketball player in the red zone where he's comfortable boxing out defenders and making plays at the highest point. The former Arizona State star will be hooking up with another Sun Devils player as that's where new QB Brock Osweiler went to college (although the two did not play together in college).

Texans | Nick Novak looking to keep job    Mon Jun 13, 06:53 PM

Houston Texans PK Nick Novak will try to hold off PK Ka'imi Fairbairn for the kicker job during the minicamp and training camp. Novak did not miss any kicks from inside 50 yards in 2015, while Fairbairn has a strong leg and would help field positions during kickoffs.

Texans | Houston claims Terrance Mitchell    Mon Jun 13, 04:40 PM

Free-agent CB Terrance Mitchell (Cowboys) was claimed by the Houston Texans Monday, June 13. Mitchell replaces CB Richard Leonard (hamstring), who underwent surgery on his torn hamstring last week.

Texans | Kevin Johnson progressing    Sun Jun 12, 01:35 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (wrist, foot) is not yet running, but he is making steady progress in his recovery from offseason foot surgeries. Johnson has added muscle this offseason, too, and said he is trying to get healthy, bigger, stronger and faster.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Johnson is one of our favorite young CBs in the league. He started 10 games last year, but Johnson played through a Jones' fracture the final few weeks of the season. Not afraid of a challenge, Johnson is a feisty corner who can play close to the line of scrimmage and get physical with opposing WRs. Having him back and healthy will continue to be a great asset for a strong Texans defense.

Texans | Braxton Miller running sharp routes    Sat Jun 11, 11:27 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has been running sharp routes in OTAs, and he has shown the ability to make plays in space.

Footballguys view: It's scary to think what Miller could be in the NFL. He's only a year or so into learning the WR position after spending most of his college career at Ohio State as a QB. Earlier this year at the Senior Bowl, Miller flashed big-time playmaking ability (and an edge as a competitor). Dynasty owners should be all over him, while re-draft owners need to keep him on the waiver-wire speed dial.

Texans | Brock Osweiler a work in progress    Sat Jun 11, 08:06 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said he still has a 'long way to go' to learn head coach Bill O'Brien's system, but O'Brien said Osweiler has lived up to expectations thus far.

Footballguys view: Osweiler didn't really develop that much during his time with the Broncos, so we're not expecting him to take great strides with the Texans. The team had better be ready for inconsistent QB play, because that's what Osweiler was during the seven games he started for the Broncos in 2015.

Texans | Cecil Shorts admired for toughness     Fri Jun 10, 11:21 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts was praised by WR DeAndre Hopkins for his toughness. 'Even if he's hurt, he's going to go out there,' Hopkins said. 'You'll have to tell him to go on the sideline and get checked out. He's a hard worker.'

Footballguys view: Shorts is in line to play as the Texans second- or third-string WR to begin the season. The Texans have made a ton of moves at the WR position, so his hold on any fantasy-relevant job may be a tenuous one. We could see guys like second-year pro Jaelen Strong or rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller get more time/targets behind Hopkins.

Texans | Several players miss practice    Fri Jun 10, 03:16 PM

Houston Texans TE Ryan Griffin (Achilles'), RB Tyler Ervin (quadriceps), OT Duane Brown (quadriceps), CB Johnathan Joseph (knee) and CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10. Griffin is not expected to practice until training camp.

Footballguys view: In dynasty leagues, we've got a lot of love for Ervin. His speed and big-play ability could come in handy as a running back or return man with the Texans.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus sits out    Fri Jun 10, 03:13 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: The Texans need to be careful here as hamstring injuries can be tricky to deal with. Mercilus has been increasing his activity over the last week and is not dealing with a serious injury.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz remains sidelined    Fri Jun 10, 03:11 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10, because of a hamstring injury he suffered last week. Fiedorwicz's injury is not considered serious.

Footballguys view: Fiedorowicz is a big-bodied TE who can be used effectively as a blocker or red-zone threat. He'll compete with Ryan Griffin to be the top TE for the Texans in 2016.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins, Osweiler progressing    Mon Jun 6, 03:41 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler and WR DeAndre Hopkins have progressed in their chemistry, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, who said both players are working extremely hard.

Footballguys view: Good thing Osweiler didn't miss one day of OTAs to go with the Broncos to visit President Obama at the White House on Monday....of course we're being sarcastic, as we feel the young QB made a mistake by not going. It's great to build offseason chemistry, but missing one day of practice would not have held them back. Hopkins is QB-proof, so even if (when?) Osweiler struggles we should still see "Nuke" have plenty of fantasy relevance.

Texans | J.J. Watt returns to practice    Mon Jun 6, 02:04 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) returned to practice Monday, June 6, after undergoing groin and core surgery this offseason.

Footballguys view: Watt should be good to go by training camp. We're sure the team is taking it easy on him. Watt's play this year could once again propel the Texans into the postseason.

Texans | Lamar Miller to be dual threat    Mon Jun 6, 08:16 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller is slated for a versatile role as an inside and outside runner, and he figures to be a healthy part of the passing game.

Footballguys view: Miller has been a top-10 fantasy RB each of the last two years, but we don't think he's yet played up to his full potential. That's exciting when you consider the role and workload he's likely to have in his first season with the Texans. We won't be surprised if Miller finishes the year as a top-5 fantasy RB and the fantasy community feels that way as well. Miller has a current ADP of RB7 (2.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Jaelen Strong in better shape    Wed Jun 1, 04:58 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong is down to 197 pounds after weighing in at 230 pounds last season. An improved physique has already improved his game. 'I just said to him today how far he's come,' head coach Bill O'Brien said. 'I was concerned about him from a conditioning standpoint. He really at some point in time before training camp, he came back and passed the conditioning test and really took off after that.'

Footballguys view: Strong looks like a different player according to observers. His offseason arrest might have dropped him off of fantasy radars in dynasty leagues, so this is a good time to buy low if you liked Strong coming out but missed him in last year's rookie drafts. He will vie to start outside and keep first-round pick Will Fuller in a deep target role. Cecil Shorts is likely to line up in the slot.

Texans | J.J. Watt could return soon    Tue May 31, 06:13 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) said he feels really good and hopes to return to practice soon.

Footballguys view: The Texans are wise to be cautious with their superstar here. The team has built and incredible roster on both sides of the ball and if QB Brock Osweiler doesn't screw it up, the Texans can make a run at the postseason again in 2016.

Texans | Tom Savage's shoulder healthy     Sat May 28, 11:34 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (shoulder) said he is healthy and ready to compete for the backup quarterback job, and he delivered the ball with zip and accuracy during the first week of OTAs.

Footballguys view: Even in super deep dynasty leagues, we don't have a lot of hope for Savage. He's got a big arm, but he struggles throwing it in the ocean when standing on the beach. The Texans are clearly Brock Osweiler's team, meaning that if Savage can actually improve he's unlikely to see the field in Houston. Perhaps he'll need to move on in order to get his shot.

Texans | Braxton Miller signs rookie deal    Thu May 26, 05:29 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 26. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We love Miller's size and athleticism but he is very raw and no better than third on the target list, assuming he can beat out Jaelen Strong. Rumors have the coaching staff frustrated with Strong, so there's a chance. Still, Miller is exceptionally raw, especially with only a year of college ball at receiver under his belt.

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) was in attendance for organized team activities Monday, May 23, but did not participate in practice.

Texans | More muscle for DeAndre Hopkins    Mon May 23, 05:46 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins said he has gained more weight by adding muscle this offseason.

Footballguys view: Added strength should help Hopkins win contested catches. It may also help with his yards after contact. Last year, Hopkins tied for 107th in the league with only 57 yards after contact. By comparison, Falcons WR Julio Jones was the top wideout in the league with 261 yards after contact. Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski led all receivers in the league with 289 yards after contact in 2015.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney full healthy     Mon May 23, 04:11 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) said he is at 100% health. Clowney dealt with a mid-foot sprain late last season but did not undergo offseason surgery.

Footballguys view: Are we sure about that? Clowney's pro career has been marred by injury, and he may never be the player the Texans envisioned when they selected him with the no.1 overall pick in 2014. If he is healthy, then he's going to be relied on to create pressure on opposing QBs opposite superstar DE J.J. Watt.

Texans | J.J. Watt not practicing    Mon May 23, 03:48 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) did not practice for the first day of organized team activities Monday, May 23, as he continues to recover from offseason groin surgery.

Footballguys view: Watt's a pro's pro. He doesn't need every offseason rep, but we're sure that as soon as he's ready he's going to be out there on the field.

Texans | Will Fuller will be tested early    Sun May 22, 09:16 PM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller and WR Braxton Miller will work against veteran cornerbacks when OTAs begin.

Footballguys view: The rookies will need to prove themselves on the practice field if they want a chance to earn snaps on Sunday. Fuller is a speedy target who reminds some in the scouting community of Ted Ginn. Miller is a converted QB with crazy athleticism and who is still learning the position after only one year of playing WR in college at Ohio State.

Texans | Lamar Miller comfortable with offense    Sun May 22, 12:34 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller said the offensive concepts are similar to those he used as a member of the Miami Dolphins, with some differences in terminology, and he said finding his way around Houston has been tougher than learning the playbook.

Footballguys view: A comfortable Miller can be a dangerous RB with a ton of potential for fantasy owners. Even though he's been a top-10 fantasy RB each of the last two years, we don't think we've seen the best from Miller. He could post career-best numbers in his first year with the Texans. They'll rely on Miller to do the heavy lifting for the offense, and his production will help keep their strong defense fresh. We love his current ADP of RB7 (2.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Nick Martin signs rookie pact    Fri May 13, 02:40 PM

Houston Texans C Nick Martin signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, May 13.

Footballguys view: Martin was the team's second-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, and he should be a quality player for years to come. He's strong and has a nasty attitude in the trenches. Martin is versatile and can line up at guard or center.

Texans | Brock Osweiler learning new offense    Wed May 11, 11:14 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said Wednesday, May 11, that it has been fun learning a new offense and trying to get comfortable in his new surroundings. 'It's fun,' Osweiler said. 'It's hard to judge that progress because we haven't hit the practice field and gone against a defense, but it's like you speak Spanish your whole life and then all of a sudden one day, they tell you to go learn French and do it in front of 70,000 people.'

Footballguys view: While not everyone here at Footballguys is a big Osweiler acolyte (Brockolyte?), even the most skeptical of us have been rolling our eyes over the concern about this. Every quarterback in a new system has referred to learning that system in this way. It's far too early to start rending your clothes and tearing out your hair over this. Many of us may not be sold on Osweiler, but this news blurb isn't anything to get worked up about yet.

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (wrist, foot), returning from wrist and foot surgeries, said Tuesday, May 10, that he is feeling good. 'I'm feeling good, continuing to get healthier, bigger, stronger and faster,' Johnson said.

Footballguys view: Johnson says he played through a Jones fracture in his foot for eight games as a rookie in 2015. He flashed big-time potential last year, and we're excited to see him healthy and starring on he field for the Texans. With an amazing draft, a new QB in Brock Osweiler and a solid defense the Texans are prepared to make another playoff run in 2016.

Texans | No extension imminent for DeAndre Hopkins    Mon May 9, 01:55 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins and the Texans aren't close on a contract extension after the Texans exercised Hopkins' fifth-year option worth $7.915 million, according to a source. He's entering the fourth year of a $7.637 million rookie contract that includes a $3.926 million signing bonus and $6.181 million guaranteed. Hopkins is confident both sides will work something out.

Footballguys view: The Texans have Hopkins under contract through the 2017 season. We may not see any movement on a new deal in a year. However, he's most certainly a player who is in the long-term plan for the Texans. That may prompt them to pay him a contract around what Dez Bryant (Cowboys) and Demaryius Thomas (Broncos) received last year.

Texans | Tyler Ervin signs rookie deal    Thu May 5, 09:28 PM

Houston Texans RB Tyler Ervin signed a four-year deal worth $2.887 million, including a $547,568 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: The Texans smashed it out of the park with their draft. Ervin is an explosive playmaker who can instantly get to top speed. He's not a big back, but he's a determined runner who can gash a defense when he gets a crease. Ervin should be a fine change-of-pace back behind starter Lamar Miller in 2016.
