Texans | Andre Johnson visits team facility    Tue Jul 22, 01:18 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson visited the team facility Monday, July 21. Johnson has visited the facility a few times this offseason. According to a league source, it does not mean Johnson will report to camp on time.

Footballguys view: Johnson was never going to get traded. His salary has too much dead money for the Texans to absorb. He may not be happy with the quarterback situation, but he'll get over it. Johnson's current ADP is WR16 (4.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (hernia) said he is not sure if he will be cleared in time for training camp. 'I'm going to try,' said Clowney, while in New York to promote a sports drink. 'That's the goal, to try to get back. But I don't know for sure right now. I'm going to let (the trainers) decide.'

Texans | Two expected to compete for LG job    Fri Jul 18, 10:35 PM

Houston Texans OGs Ben Jones and Xavier Su'a-Filo are expected to compete for the starting left guard job during training camp. Jones likely has an advantage for the job entering camp, because Su'a-Filo missed a majority of the offseason workouts.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney hopes to be ready for camp    Fri Jul 18, 03:44 PM

Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (hernia) wants to be cleared by Saturday, July 26 in order to participate in training camp. He is recovering from sports hernia surgery.

Footballguys view: The Texans are not going to rush the 2014 number one overall pick back until he's ready. Expect the team to take it easy on him so they'll have Clowney ready for Week 1 of the regular season.

Texans | Arian Foster: Andre Johnson is Houston    Wed Jul 16, 12:40 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster said WR Andre Johnson, who reportedly has asked for a trade this offseason, is an embodiment of the city of Houston, and he has more star power than the city's younger sports standouts. 'He is Houston,' Foster said. 'I remember when I had my little run where I had like two back-to-back great seasons. I felt like this city loves me, they love me here. Everywhere I go, this is still Dre's city. I don't care if James Harden is walking around, Dwight Howard, whatever. This is Andre Johnson's city. He is Houston. That's what it means more than anything. He's been a staple here for so long.'

Footballguys view: Johnson is unlikely to be traded because of the salary-cap implications on the Texans. He's unhappy with the direction of the offense and wants out, but Johnson is likely to stay in Houston for at least this season.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney was advised to sit out 2013    Tue Jul 15, 01:07 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney was advised to sit out the 2013 season while attending South Carolina University. 'Jadeveon didn't even have to play last year,' head coach Steve Spurrier said. 'A lot of people advised him to sit out. He wanted to play.'

Texans | Whitney Mercilus becoming more versatile    Mon Jul 14, 11:59 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus has been working on dropping back in coverage this offseason, and he said he is excited about his role in defensive coordinator Romeo Crennel's scheme. 'More drops into coverage instead of solely rushing, rushing, rushing,' Mercilus said. 'So now, (I am) understanding concepts and formations of the offense and being able to drop back into coverage, understanding what are my keys, what am I reading for, and reacting between pass and run, especially when I do have to drop back into coverage.'

Footballguys view: The Texans are going to have a suffocating defense in 2014. Too bad their offense won't be up to snuff.

Texans | Opinion: Andre Johnson won't be traded    Fri Jul 11, 09:52 AM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson 'is not going to be traded,' in the opinion to John McClain. Houston wants to avoid giving Johnson the $1 million workout bonus that he passed up by not participating in offseason activities or guarantee his 2015 salary. They don't want to create a precedent that can be manipulated by DE J.J. Watt's agent in the future. McClain said that 'Any 33-year-old ... anybody doesn't walk away from' the $10 million that Houston owes Johnson.

Footballguys view: McClain is the best beat writer for the Texans, so we trust his word. In the immortal words of Nick Saban "this ain't fantasy football." It sounds great to put Johnson with the Browns or the Seahawks (or any other team), but the reality is we're unlikely to see the veteran receiver moved. He's frustrated with the team's lack of direction offensively and their rag-tag group of quarterbacks. We can't blame him for the way he feels, but at the end of the day he'll get over it.

Texans | Andre Johnson willing to restructure deal    Thu Jul 10, 09:05 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is willing to restructure his contract to help potential suitors fit under the salary cap, but he won't take a pay cut, a source told Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Johnson has a $14.6 million cap number this year with around $11.9 million in dead money. This is what's likely to keep him from being traded.

Texans | Four teams interested in Andre Johnson    Thu Jul 10, 05:13 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is wanted via trade by at least four teams, according to a source. The names of the four teams were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: At least. The contract and demands from Houston might have paired the teams down to four serious and willing teams but you have to imagine there are more out there who could get involved. He'd be an interesting fit in several teams and Cleveland has been a hot rumor since Josh Gordon got into his latest batch of trouble. Maybe he'll join the Cavs if LeBron goes back home.

Texans | Duane Brown ready for camp    Thu Jul 10, 04:30 PM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown recently said he's been working out, reviewing playbooks and getting his mind right until training camp begins.

Footballguys view: He'll have to hit the ground running as the line has to be on point with the question marks at quarterback. He'll have to prove he can open lanes for Arian Foster as well as defend pass-rushers and keep Ryan Fitzpatrick (or whoever) on his feet.

Texans | Brian Cushing working out    Thu Jul 10, 02:02 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing (knee) said he has been working out and believes he will be ready for the start of the regular season. He has not put a specific timetable for when he will be able to start practicing.

Footballguys view: Good news for Houston fans--this defense could be completely stacked with JJ Watt and rookie Jadeveon Clowney as well as Cushing. It had better be because we aren't sure the offense has the juice (especially under center) to carry the team to wins.

Texans | Alan Bonner sees time in slot    Thu Jul 10, 01:44 PM

Houston Texans WR Alan Bonner received some time as a slot receiver during offseason workouts and indicated he is also in the running for a return job.

Footballguys view: While in and of itself this piece of information might not seem vital, given that Bonner is at best the third behind DeAndre Hopkins and Andre Johnson. It becomes more interesting if Johnson holds out or is traded though. A sixth rounder in the 2013 NFL draft, Bonner flashed ability in minicamps and OTAs last year but ended up on injured reserve instead. Originally tagged as a returner, his moves after the catch could make him an interesting slot player. Don't draft him now, but keep him in mind depending on what happens with Johnson.

Texans | Andre Johnson moving on?    Thu Jul 10, 01:18 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is now working out 'not thinking of the Texans,' according to a source. Four teams are expressing interest in trading for Johnson before the season.

Footballguys view: It's hard to imagine that the team will take the cap hit that comes with trading (or releasing) Johnson. If he were (depending on where he landed) Johnson could put up some big numbers. As it stands for now, we still see him playing with Houston and still see him as a WR2. But this bears watching and the longer it goes on the more it might impact his fantasy season. Missing an OTA is one thing. Missing camps or preseason games could have a longer impact.

Texans | Andre Johnson trade would be costly    Thu Jul 10, 12:16 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson would cost the team $11.96 million in dead money if he's traded. He has three years and $34.5 million left on his deal.

Footballguys view: It seems unlikely that he'll be traded given the cost, though teams are absolutely interested. At age 33, of course Johnson won't want to sit through another rebuild and given the quarterback situation we share his lack of enthusiasm. A decent WR2 in Houston, his upside could be a lot better elsewhere but again, the cost of that move to Houston makes it hard to see it happening.

Texans | Andre Johnson might be at camp    Wed Jul 9, 09:46 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson hinted Wednesday, July 9, in an interview that he might be present for the start of training camp. 'Hopefully. We'll see what happens. Camp is three weeks away,' Johnson told NFL Network.

Footballguys view: A holdout might not be bad for Johnson, especially if it forces a trade. He is a veteran who doesn't need camp to get in shape and ready for the upcoming season.

Texans | Andre Johnson still unsure of future    Wed Jul 9, 07:42 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson said he is still unsure if he will be with the team in Week 1.

Footballguys view: The Texans might be waiting to see if a team loses a top receiver and finds themselves desperate enough to trade a first-round pick for Johnson's services. His fantasy value would only go up if he was traded.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney sets modest goals    Mon Jul 7, 08:24 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney said that sacking Indianapolis Colts QB Andrew Luck is one of his goals this season. "My goal in the NFL is to sack Andrew Luck," Clowney said. "He's in my division. I'm playing him two times a year. He's a dangerous quarterback, very smart with the ball, he makes good decisions, so I just want to get after him and sack him one time.'

Footballguys view: Clowney is going to be the subject of a lot of scrutiny in his rookie year. If he can neutralize Luck a few times in the divisional games with the Colts, he'll win fans in Houston.

Texans | Two may compete for No. 2 RB job    Wed Jul 2, 02:33 PM

Houston Texans RBs Andre Brown and Alfred Blue may be the two main candidates for the No. 2 running back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Brown has the edge because of his years of experience in the NFL. Blue is a rookie who was never really featured in college at LSU. It's an important race to watch for fantasy owners because the RB2 will be behind aging veteran Arian Foster.

Texans | Andre Johnson expected back    Wed Jul 2, 08:18 AM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is expected to be back with the team this season, according to beat writer Tania Ganguli.

Footballguys view: Some people expect Walter White to come back, or Tupac, or Elvis. What else is the team supposed to say? "He's gone, time to move on!" Yes, Johnson is expected to come back but when is up in the air right now. Johnson is disgruntled because this team lacks a good quarterback, and the passing game should suffer in 2014. We'll see if he tries to force a trade when training camp rolls around.

Texans | Brooks Reed preparing for inside linebacker    Tue Jul 1, 02:09 PM

Houston Texans LB Brooks Reed recently said playing inside linebacker is 'totally different' than playing outside linebacker. 'I have to know a lot of adjustments and checks but it's coming along.'

Footballguys view: Reed is smart and has a nose for the ball. Those two attributes will greatly help in the transition to playing inside linebacker for the Texans. Reed also feels like he's still a work in progress and there are always things he can improve on.

Texans | DeVier Posey, Keshawn Martin could fight for one spot    Sat Jun 28, 11:54 AM

Houston Texans WRs DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin could compete for one roster spot if the team decides to keep only five receivers on their final roster, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Tania Ganguli.

Footballguys view: One of these guys may get released if the Texans choose to only keep five receivers on the roster. We're expecting Houston to use a lot of two tight end sets under new head coach Bill O'Brien. That means the roster could be a light at wide receiver. Posey seems to be the safer player here as he's more of a threat on offense than Martin (mainly a returner) is.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney played with sports hernia last season    Thu Jun 26, 06:42 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (hernia) played with a sports hernia last season at South Carolina, according to Gil Brandt.

Footballguys view: That could explain the dip in production, though how we were able to go through the entire draft process and never heard a thing about it is baffling. Clowney should be ready to go for Week 1, though the team would certainly like to have him on the field long before that.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney injury update    Thu Jun 26, 04:43 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (hernia) said he is day-to-day in his recovery from hernia surgery. Clowney could not say for sure if he will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: The Texans would like him in sooner than later but they don't have to rush him, as long as he is studying and learning the playbook. He should see a lot of production with JJ Watt, Brian Cushing and company around him.

Texans | Case Keenum looking to work with Andre Johnson    Thu Jun 26, 01:20 PM

Houston Texans QB Case Keenum will spend the next month learning the new offensive system and reviewing his mistakes from 2013 action. Keenum said he wants to connect with disgruntled WR Andre Johnson to work out on the side. Johnson is reportedly upset with losing and wants out of Houston.

Footballguys view: We're not sure Johnson would answer his phone call. After all, Johnson is disgruntled with the offense (and likely the selection of quarterbacks), and Keenum went 0-8 as a starting quarterback in 2013.

Texans | High on Tom Savage    Sat Jun 21, 05:25 PM

The Houston Texans appear to be higher on QB Tom Savage than a lot of others are, according to former New England Patriots LB Ted Johnson.

Footballguys view: Savage had a lot of buzz before the draft, and there were some promoting him as a first-round pick. The former Rutgers/PITT quarterback fell to the Texans in the fourth round. Savage has a strong arm but has accuracy problems. We'll see if he can win the starting job over veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick at some point this season.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney to be used as stand-up LB    Sat Jun 21, 05:23 PM

Texans | Andre Johnson wants out    Sat Jun 21, 05:15 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson wants out of Houston, according to sources close to former New England Patriots LB Ted Johnson.

Footballguys view: We'll see if something comes of this. Johnson is unhappy with the direction of the offense, and we don't blame him. The team lacks a real threat at quarterback as Ryan Fitzgerald is penciled in as their starter. Not only is Johnson unhappy, but second-year WR DeAndre Hopkins is also frustrated by the offense. The Texans have a world-class defense, but they could struggle to score with a poor offense.

Texans | No timetable for Jadeveon Clowney    Thu Jun 19, 04:41 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (hernia) doesn't have a timetable for his return following sports hernia surgery a week ago. 'The pain, the injury's getting better every day, day by day,' Clowney said. 'Just looking forward to getting healthy and looking forward to training camp.' Head coach Bill O'Brien expects Clowney to be ready for training camp next month.

Footballguys view: They won't rush Clowney into action but they'll want him playing by camp if at all possible as he'll have a lot to learn, plus need to build some chemistry with the guys around him. He could really eat with the players around him pulling attention away from him, so our expectations for him would be optimistic and somewhere around a LB3.

Texans | Akeem Dent acquired    Thu Jun 19, 08:20 AM

The Houston Texans acquired LB Akeem Dent from the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for QB T.J. Yates.

Footballguys view: Dent got benched midway through last year, but was a solid run-defender prior to that. More than likely the Texans are looking for some quality depth with upside behind oft-injureD Brian Cushing. Dent is a bit limited but if he can bounce back from a bad 2013, he is a great value.

Texans | T.J. Yates released    Tue Jun 17, 05:53 PM

The Houston Texans released QB T.J. Yates Tuesday, June 17, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Yates appears to have lost out to Case Keenum to be the backup QB to Ryan Fitzpatrick (which means having a real chance to start this year). He could get some interest from the Ravens, who have his old head coach (Gary Kubiak) running the offense and a need at backup QB after they have appeared to have soured on Tyrod Taylor.

Texans | Andre Johnson not present    Tue Jun 17, 02:19 PM

As expected, Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is not at the team's mandatory minicamp Tuesday, June 17.

Footballguys view: Johnson would love to get traded to a contender, and his fantasy owners would love to see that happen, too. The Texans are basically punting this year at quarterback, which is part of the problem for Johnson, both in fantasy and real terms. We'll see whether the Texans are even open to dealing him.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick named the starting quarterback    Tue Jun 17, 01:51 PM

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien named QB Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback Tuesday, June 17.

Footballguys view: Case Keenum could be an option if Fitzpatrick falters early, as could fourth round pick Tom Savage. Sadly, Fitzpatrick being on the field is probably the best case for Texans skill players this year.

Texans | Andre Johnson won't be at minicamp    Mon Jun 16, 12:27 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson will not show his face at the team's mandatory minicamp this week, according to his uncle Andre Melton. Johnson has been thinking this offseason and isn't sure he wants to continue his career with the team as they rebuild. Johnson can be fined each day he's absent, and if he misses all three days this week, he can lose a total of $69,455. He would also lose a $1 million offseason workout bonus. Johnson continues to work out on his own and remains in peak physical shape.

Footballguys view: The frustration has not gone away for Johnson. He's upset with the team's direction on offense, and the lack of a true franchise quarterback probably doesn't help. This isn't the way new head coach Bill O'Brien wanted to get things started with his new team. We'll see if something can be worked out between the two sides before training camp starts. Johnson could be asking for a trade to get to a team with better postseason chances.

Texans | Still no official starting quarterback    Fri Jun 13, 03:00 PM

The Houston Texans finished organized team activities Friday, June 13, without a starting quarterback. QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage are competing for three roster spots. Fitzpatrick, who is expected to start Week 1, had a 'decent offseason' and has done well picking up a new offense, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Savage hasn't been ruled out for the No. 2 position.

Footballguys view: They have to find a good quarterback first. Their collection of quarterbacks is not impressive, and that's why both Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins are frustrated this offseason. Expect a lot of Arian Foster this year due to the poor quarterback collection.

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (knee) is nursing a hyperextended knee, suffered in practice Thursday, June 12, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.
