Texans | Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett splitting reps    Thu May 28, 02:14 PM

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer split first-team repetitions in offseason workouts Wednesday, May 27, with QB Ryan Mallett. 'The tempo (stood out),' said Hoyer. 'You can tell we put a lot of work in and guys were just prepared. There weren't a lot of mental mistakes. Guys came ready to go and it was exciting -- got after it a little bit.'

Footballguys view: The Battle For King Mediocre has begun in Houston - try not to snore when you fall asleep monitoring this competition. We know Hoyer is an average-at-best quarterback, which tells you all you need to know about the progress of one Ryan Mallett. A dark horse is Tom Savage, but he's still a project and might be a year away from really being a contender for the job. Houston has a tremendous defense, some excellent offensive weapons and a solid offensive line--but no quarterback. If anything holds them back from true contention this year, it will be the lack of a quality passer.

Houston Texans OT Tyson Clabo was released Thursday, May 22.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney on track    Tue May 19, 10:42 AM

Updating an ongoing story, Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is doing well in his recovery from microfracture surgery. Clowney has been working hard at rehabbing the knee, according to Texans head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Clowney had better get on track or the "bust" term is going to be flying around him more than it is today. He was the number one overall pick last year, but Clowney failed to stay healthy as a rookie and made no impact. At this time, he's almost six months removed from microfracture surgery.

Texans | Ryan Mallett ready to go    Thu May 14, 03:34 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (pectoral) said he is feeling better each day and does not think he has any restrictions from the pectoral injury he suffered during the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Right now, Mallett's ADP is after the 15th round, but a solid training camp could push him up the board. He has talented weapons around him but he's unproven and inconsistent.

Texans | Houston QBs to share reps    Tue May 12, 03:17 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett will split first-team repetitions once organized team activities (OTAs) begin later this month.

Footballguys view: Awesome, too bad they don't have better quarterbacks to choose from. The Texans have a fine group of skill position players, led by Arian Foster and DeAndre Hopkins. They won't be able to get the most out of their passing game unless Hoyer, Mallett or Tom Savage start to play out of this world. This will hold the fantasy potential of the offense back in 2015.

  Texans | Jaelen Strong's conditioning a concern    Mon May 11, 04:20 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong needs to improve his conditioning, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien added that his rookie class as a whole needed to improve their conditioning.

Footballguys view: That last sentence is important to highlight...O'Brien was calling out all the rookies on the roster. Strong is a larger receiver, and he reminds us of a young Marques Colston. Too bad the Texans quarterback situation is one of the worst in the league. Strong gives the Texans a nice starting option opposite DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | D.J. Swearinger leaves Texans    Mon May 11, 11:52 AM

Houston Texans SS D.J. Swearinger announced on Instagram that he and the team parted ways Monday, May 11.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Swearinger was a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft but he couldn't make a positive impression with the Texans. Swearinger failed to make plays against the run or the pass, and that's why no team was willing to trade for him. Now that he's on the open market, there might be a few teams interested in giving Swearinger a look.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins one of the best?    Sat May 9, 09:56 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins was called on the best receivers in the league by head coach Bill O'Brien, and the Texans were willing to part ways with WR Andre Johnson in part because the coaching staff believes Hopkins is ready to be the No. 1 option in the passing game.

Footballguys view: O'Brien may not be too far off with that statement. We love the skill set and upside of Hopkins....too bad the quarterbacks in Houston are among the worst in the league. The lack of quality play at quarterback will hamper Hopkins, the passing game and the entire team in 2015.

Texans | Jaelen Strong signs rookie pact    Fri May 8, 11:13 AM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong signed his rookie four-year contract Friday, May 8.

Footballguys view: We love this addition for the Texans. Strong plays with strength at the point of the catch and natural size to dominate contested catches. He's not a burner, but he's fearless running routes over the middle and has good run-after-the-catch ability. Strong reminds us of a Marques Colston-like prospect with a dash of Alshon Jeffery to his game. He's the perfect wide receiver to start opposite DeAndre Hopkins. However, fantasy owners need to know this entire passing game is likely to suffer because of bad quarterback play.

Texans | Benardrick McKinney signs first deal    Fri May 8, 08:42 AM

Houston Texans LB Benardrick McKinney signed a four-year, $5.3 million deal Friday, May 8. The deal includes $3.2 million guaranteed and a $2.1 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: McKinney is a two-down thumper who arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He can blow up plays in the hole, and McKinney has the ability to scrape and flow to the ball without letting offensive lineman get a hold of him. He's not going to be effective in coverage, but McKinney can be an intimidating force in the middle.

Texans | Kevin Johnson signs rookie deal    Fri May 8, 08:35 AM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson signed his four-year, $10.049 million deal with a $5.5 million signing bonus Friday, May 8.

Footballguys view: Johnson is incredibly gifted athletically, and he can mirror wide receivers all over the field. He has the vision to understand the route as it unfolds, and he has the recovery speed to turn and burst in order to catch a receiver on a deep route. He could step in and contribute right away for the Texans.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus signs extension    Mon May 4, 06:47 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus signed a four-year contract extension worth $26 million Monday, May 4. The deal includes $10.5 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Instead of picking up his fifth-year option, the Texans went ahead and got a long-term deal done with Mercilus. He may not be the pass-rusher many envisioned when he came out of Illinois in 2012, but he's a strong run-defender and obviously a key piece to what Houston does defensively.

Texans | HOU moves up to grab Jaelen Strong    Fri May 1, 09:59 PM

The Houston Texans selected Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong in Round 3 (No. 70 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1. The Texans moved up from the No. 82 pick, trading with the New York Jets. The Jets also receive WR DeVier Posey, a fifth-round pick (No. 152 overall) and a seventh-round pick (No. 229 overall).

Footballguys view: That wrist must have really scared teams as a lot of less talented receivers went ahead of Strong. The Jets got a huge haul for the pick, but Houston got a great replacement for Andre Johnson and a weapon across from DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | Benardrick McKinney selected 43rd overall     Fri May 1, 08:08 PM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney was selected 43rd overall by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1.

Footballguys view: The Texans may have determined that they will be running out a defense and no offense next year. Certainly whatever defense they trot out will be incredibly good. McKinney will lock down the middle of the field and improve a run defense which struggled so much last season.

Texans | Kevin Johnson selected 16th overall    Thu Apr 30, 09:55 PM

Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson was selected 16th overall by the Houston Texans in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: The Texans continue to build an 'anti-Andrew Luck' defense and it's a good one. Johnson is a great cover corner and makes this tough defense even tougher. Now they just need offense.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney doing well    Tue Apr 28, 02:05 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is doing well in his progress from microfracture knee surgery, according to general manager Rick Smith. Smith said he is encouraged by Clowney's recovery and expects him to be a major contributor in 2015.

Footballguys view: Clowney's rookie season was a wash due to this knee injury. He needs to start putting up the numbers on the field to avoid being labeled a first-round bust. If healthy and motivated, Clowney has the potential to be one of the best pass-rushers in the NFL.

Texans | HOU meets with Jaelen Strong    Sat Apr 25, 11:20 AM

Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong met with the Houston Texans earlier this week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Strong is one of our favorite receivers in this draft class. Imagine a player like a young Marques Colston, and you have the type of player Strong could be in the NFL. He's big, strong and a physical player at the point of the catch. He could be a first- or second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Texans | Akeem Hunt drawing interest in Houston    Mon Apr 20, 09:29 AM

Purdue RB Akeem Hunt has drawn interest from the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Hunt is your classic triple threat who often draws comparisons to Darren Sproles (Eagles). At 183 pounds, Hunt is a smaller back with explosive playmaking capability as an outside runner, receiver out of the backfield (or the slot) and kick/punt returner.

Texans | Cody White re-signed    Thu Apr 9, 04:37 PM

Houston Texans OG Cody White re-signed to an undisclosed deal Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Just a depth pickup off their own practice squad. White might end up carrying more weight on the offensive line, but he'll start fighting for a backup spot during camp.

Texans | Hope Jadeveon Clowney can return during camp    Fri Apr 3, 06:14 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) continues to recover from microfracture surgery, and the team hopes he will be able to return to the field at some point during the later stages of training camp.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the draft last year and his rookie season was a wash. He's got amazing natural ability as a pass-rusher, but this knee injury could rob him of the potential he had coming out of college.

Texans | Nate Washington signs with Houston    Wed Apr 1, 04:32 PM

Free-agent WR Nate Washington (Titans) signed a one-year deal worth $1 million, including $30,000 guaranteed, Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: The Texans needed to make a move at wide receiver since Andre Johnson is now with the Colts. Washington will compete with Cecil Shorts for the WR2 job opposite DeAndre Hopkins in 2015. Washington is likely better suited to be the team's WR3 this season. With bad QBs in place (Tom Savage, Ryan Mallett), we're not excited about Houston's passing game this year.

Texans | Big things expected from DeAndre Hopkins    Fri Mar 27, 09:32 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins caught 76 passes for 1,210 yards last year, and among players drafted in the past two seasons, his production was better than everyone except New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. 'We just want to see him continue and progress,' head coach Bill O'Brien said. 'We think he can be one of the best, we think he is one of the best. We have a lot of confidence in him and we're looking forward to seeing him progress when the offseason program starts.'

Footballguys view: With Andre Johnson moving on to the Colts, Hopkins is the team's WR1. We'd feel better about his prospects if the quarterback situation in Houston was better. Guys like Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage don't instill much confidence in the team's passing game.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney continues to recover    Thu Mar 26, 01:14 AM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) continues to recover from microfracture surgery on his knee. Head coach Bill O'Brien said Wednesday, March 25, that there is no timetable for Clowney's return, but the team hopes to get him on the field 'sometime during (training camp).'

Footballguys view: After a disappointing first season because of his injury, Clowney and the Texans hope he starts to show some of the upside he had in college. The team continues to improve the defense, so he has plenty of players around him to pull attention away from him.

Texans | Xavier Su'a-Filo is candidate to start    Thu Mar 26, 01:12 AM

Houston Texans OG Xavier Su'a-Filo is a candidate to start on the left side with OL Ben Jones moving to center to replace the departed C Chris Myers. Su'a-Filo has been a regular working out in Houston even though the offseason conditioning program doesn't start until April 20. 'He's in there every day working very hard, working in the weight room, because he wants to be good,' head coach Bill O'Brien said. 'I like his demeanor. I like where he is right now.'

Footballguys view: They need to make sure the offensive line is ready to go, as they don't have a quarterback who is so mobile as to overcome a weak pocket. Su'a-Filo has impressed the team by attending workouts at the stadium and putting in a ton of hours.

Texans | Looking to Vince Wilfork as mentor    Thu Mar 26, 01:11 AM

One reason the Houston Texans signed veteran NT Vince Wilfork was to have him become a positive influence on NT Louis Nix, a third-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft who spent his first year on the reserve/injured list.

Footballguys view: Nix has a lot of potential and Wilfork might help him with the transition, but there is certainly a good chance the veteran is also there to help out on the field if Nix struggles.

Texans | Akeem Dent re-signs    Tue Mar 24, 03:25 PM

Houston Texans LB Akeem Dent re-signed to an undisclosed contract Tuesday, March 24.

Footballguys view: Dent came to the Texans last year in the trade for QB T.J. Yates. He suffered a high-ankle sprain last year that limited his playing time.

Texans | J.J. Watt restructures    Tue Mar 24, 09:12 AM

Texans | Cecil Shorts signs with Houston    Mon Mar 16, 03:11 PM

Free-agent WR Cecil Shorts (Jaguars) agreed to terms with the Houston Texans Monday, March 16. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Shorts will now be the Texans WR2 opposite DeAndre Hopkins. He could slide to the slot--arguably a better spot for him--if the Texans add a better wideout in the draft. We're not super excited about his fantasy upside because of the Texans quarterback situation and Shorts' injury history.

Texans | Cecil Shorts visiting Houston    Mon Mar 16, 10:53 AM

Free-agent WR Cecil Shorts (Jaguars) is visiting the Houston Texans Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Shorts could give them a decent WR2 now that Andre Johnson moved on to the Colts. DeAndre Hopkins is their WR1, but Shorts could be an underneath receiver on shorter routes to help move the chains.

Texans | Vince Wilfork visiting Houston    Sun Mar 15, 10:04 PM

Free-agent DT Vince Wilfork (Patriots) is visiting the Houston Texans Sunday, March 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wilfork hasn't gotten a ton of interest on the open market, but that should change with the first week of free agency in the books.

Texans | Rahim Moore signs    Thu Mar 12, 04:39 PM

Free-agent FS Rahim Moore (Broncos) agreed to a three-year deal worth $12 million with the Houston Texans Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: That should help the Texans secondary a little, and though Moore isn't much help against the run he's pretty solid in coverage.

Texans | Closing in on a deal with Rahim Moore    Thu Mar 12, 11:57 AM

Free-agent FS Rahim Moore (Broncos) is closing in on a deal with the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Moore was arguably the second-best safety on the market behind Devin McCourty (Patriots). He plays with a lot of confidence, and Moore can roam the field looking to make plays in coverage and against the run.

Texans | Bruce Carter to visit    Tue Mar 10, 06:10 PM

Free-agent LB Bruce Carter (Cowboys) will visit with the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Carter racked up 68 tackles and intercepted five passes in 2014. He would be a good fit for the Texans defense as a smart playmaker at outside linebacker.

Texans | Case Keenum traded    Tue Mar 10, 05:48 PM

Houston Texans QB Case Keenum was traded to the St. Louis Rams Tuesday, March 10, for a seventh-round draft pick in 2016, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Keenum will serve as a backup quarterback behind Nick Foles. He was expendable in Houston with the addition of Brian Hoyer and re-signing of Ryan Mallett.

Texans | Looking to add Vince Wilfork    Tue Mar 10, 04:51 PM

Free-agent DT Vince Wilfork (Patriots) is receiving interest from the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: The big man in the middle still feels he can play at a high level. He would be a great asset for the Texans defense. Wilfork can eat up double teams and he'll even get a little bit of interior push on the quarterback.

Texans | Brian Hoyer headed to Houston    Tue Mar 10, 12:38 PM

Updating previous reports, Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer will sign with the Houston Texans, according to a source. The deal is expected to be done within 24 hours.

Footballguys view: Hoyer was also considering the New York Jets. In Houston, he'll compete with Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage for the starting job in 2015. Hoyer has the most starting experience, and he could be considered the frontrunner at this time.

Texans | Andre Johnson officially released    Mon Mar 9, 04:02 PM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson was officially released Monday, March 9.

Footballguys view: This move was expected as the Texans were looking to trade Johnson, but they found no suitors. Johnson wants to play for a contender, and that's why teams like the Eagles, Colts or Ravens could be interested in the veteran wideout.

Texans | Andre Johnson to be cut    Mon Mar 9, 11:35 AM

Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson is expected to be released Monday, March 9, as the team failed to find a match for a trade.

Footballguys view: Things fell apart for Johnson last year as he was frustrated with the direction of the offense. We could see teams like the Ravens and the Eagles show interest in the veteran wideout.

Texans | Damaris Johnson re-signs with Houston    Mon Mar 9, 10:49 AM

Houston Texans WR Damaris Johnson has re-signed with the Texans on an undisclosed deal Monday, March 9.

Texans | Ryan Mallett re-ups in Houston    Mon Mar 9, 10:07 AM

Houston Texans impending free-agent QB Ryan Mallett agreed to a two-year deal with the Texans Monday, March 9.

Footballguys view: This move was expected. The Texans traded for Mallett last year, but he was hurt just a couple of games in. Mallett will compete with Tom Savage for the starting job. We'd expect Mallett to win that job.

Texans | Brian Hoyer likely to Houston    Mon Mar 9, 09:29 AM

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent QB Brian Hoyer is going to sign with the Houston Texans, according to sources.

Texans | Kareem Jackson re-signs with Houston    Sat Mar 7, 06:11 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent CB Kareem Jackson re-signed with team Saturday, March 7, on a four-year, $34 million deal, according to a source. The deal includes $20 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: A premium price tag for a top-15 cornerback, but the Texans keep their secondary intact. Jackson will start opposite Jonathan Joseph this year, and the Texans will move him to the slot in nickel packages. With Jackson wrapped up, expect the market for guys like Brandon Flowers and Byron Maxwell to explode.

Texans | Houston eyeing Torrey Smith?    Sat Mar 7, 02:56 PM

Baltimore Ravens impending free-agent WR Torrey Smith could be a target of the Houston Texans this offseason following the departure of WR Andre Johnson.

Footballguys view: Smith has the deep speed to stretch the field. The Texans have a couple of strong-armed quarterbacks in Tom Savage and Ryan Mallett (if he's re-signed). The fit is there, and Smith's price tag won't be too outrageous.

Texans | Randall Cobb being pursued by Houston    Sat Mar 7, 02:54 PM

Green Bay Packers impending free-agent WR Randall Cobb will be a free-agent target of the Houston Texans if he does not re-sign with Green Bay.

Footballguys view: Cobb would give the team a dangerous weapon to start opposite DeAndre Hopkins. Too bad Houston doesn't have a better quarterback (Tom Savage, really?) to take advantage of their wide receivers.
