Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (hamstring), WR Chris Thompson (concussion) and LB Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 15.

Footballguys view: Coutee is the rookie WR that has Fantasy GMs buzzing in Texans camp. Before his injury, Coutee was competing with Braxton Miller to be the team's no3 (slot) receiver. We'll see if he can get back on track some time before the start of the regular season.

Texans | Jordan Akins turning heads    Sat Aug 11, 04:55 PM

Houston Texans TE Jordan Akins impressed in his preseason debut with a pair of touchdown catches in the win against the Kansas City Chiefs. He is drawing praise from starting QB DeShaun Watson. 'It gives us an extra weapon on the field,' Watson said. 'We can go into a game with two tight ends, or one tight end, and we have a lot of guys that can go out there and run routes and make plays. So, he did a good job the other night of doing his job right and capitalized when his opportunity was there.'

Footballguys view: Akins had an interesting trip to the NFL. He played minor league baseball for four years (drafted by the Texas Rangers) before enrolling at UCF to play football. He's got good size (6'3" 249 pounds) and can track the ball well downfield. The Texans need a tight end to emerge from the pack and it seems like Akins could be that guy.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus sidelined    Tue Aug 7, 02:24 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (undisclosed) has missed the last few practices because of an undisclosed injury, but it is not considered serious. He is not expected to play in the first preseason game Thursday, Aug. 9.

Footballguys view: Mercilus is coming back from a torn pec, hopefully this issue is unrelated. The Texans defense could be tough to deal with against the pass if Mercilus, JJ Watt, and Jadeveon Clowney can come all the way back from their various surgeries.

Texans | Deshaun Watson expected to play Thursday    Tue Aug 7, 02:05 PM

Texans | Preseason uncertain for J.J. Watt    Sun Aug 5, 06:15 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (leg) has been performing well during the early part of training camp, but head coach Bill O'Brien said he is not sure if Watt will play in the preseason.

Footballguys view: So far there's no reason to think Watt won't be ready for Week 1, but he didn't look like his old self last year before going out and there's no guarantee he'll look remotely like that this year - at least at the beginning. Of course, Watt was playing at arguably the highest level of any defensive player in recent history, so a decline from that level doesn't mean that Watt won't be an everyweek starter in IDP leagues again.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney still not in shape    Sun Aug 5, 04:25 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney is still working to get back in football shape, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Clowney has spent most of his time working on the side in practice thus far, although he has participated in some team drills.

Footballguys view: Clowney, JJ Watt, and Whitney Mercilus are all working back from surgeries and they basically comprise the heart of the Texans pass rush. We'll be watching their returns as they prepare to face Tom Brady Week 1.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman making progress    Sat Aug 4, 04:55 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (Achilles') is headed in the right direction in terms of his recovery, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation and Foreman's health status changes the usage of Lamar Miller in 2018. Foreman is currently on Active/Physically Unable to Perform list. When healthy, we should see the Texans use a RBBC with both Foreman and Miller.

Texans | Alfred Blue the No. 2 back    Fri Aug 3, 09:39 PM

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue is listed as the No.2 running back on the first training camp depth chart.

Footballguys view: D'Onta Foreman isn't even a sure thing for Week 1. Blue is a competent backup between the tackles at best. Lamar Miller's modest ADP could be a value on the quality of this offense with Deshaun Watson at the helm, but also keep tabs on Tyler Ervin's return from a serious leg injury, as he could win a role as a receiving back.

Texans | Braxton Miller making progress    Fri Aug 3, 07:18 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has made a lot of progress at receiver since entering the NFL, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien said the team wants to see continued improvement from Miller moving forward.

Footballguys view: Miller will have a golden opportunity over the next few weeks while fourth-round pick and his main competition Keke Coutee is out with a hamstring injury. A consistent strong performance will go a long way in his bid to have a role in this offense, or even just make the roster.

Texans | Keke Coutee to miss a few weeks    Fri Aug 3, 01:02 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (hamstring) has been diagnosed with a strained hamstring and will be sidelined for a few weeks, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Texans | Keke Coutee unlikely for preseason opener    Fri Aug 3, 12:24 PM

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee (undisclosed) is nursing a minor injury and probably won't play in the preseason opener against the Kansas City Chiefs, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Coutee has a hamstring that could keep him out for a few weeks. He's battling Braxton Miller to be the slot receiver, a potentially productive spot in a Deshaun Watson-led offense. This could slow down the momentum he has been building since he was drafted in the fourth round.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney limited at camp    Thu Aug 2, 02:35 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) has been 'very' limited at training camp and has yet to fully participate in team drills. Despite the limitations, Clowney has looked great, according to defensive line coach Anthony Weaver. Weaver said the plan is to get Clowney as physically strong as possible so there's less of a risk of him aggravating his knee issue. Clowney underwent arthroscopic knee surgery this offseason.

Footballguys view: Clowney is expected to play this season and Houston is just being cautious. The already menacing defense gets even better with him and J.J. Watt healthy and ready to go.

Texans | Will Fuller bulks up    Sat Jul 28, 03:03 PM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller said he up to 185 pounds by working out and eating more often and has not lost any of his speed. He bulked up so he could improve his durability.

Footballguys view: Fuller is a speed demon, and we're certain this extra weight is not going to slow him down. Instead, the increased size should help him better deal with the punishment that he's going to take in the NFL. A first-round pick in 2016, Fuller has never played a full 16 game season and has missed eight games the last two years due to injuries. He's currently going off the board at WR31 (6.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Lamar Miller sheds weight    Fri Jul 27, 01:26 PM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller told The Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson he is at 217 pounds - his lightest weight since joining the team in 2016.

Footballguys view: Miller appeared to lose a lot of explosiveness when he bulked up to be a workhorse for the Texans in 2016. He is going to operate in an offense that will spread the field more often, so this is a great development. With D'Onta Foreman's achilles recovery still a question mark, Miller is a very attractive pick at ADP as a high floor RB2 or very strong RB3.

  Texans | D'Onta Foreman's Week 1 status uncertain    Wed Jul 25, 06:32 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman's (Achilles') availability for Week 1 is up in the air at this point, according to general manager Brian Gaine.

Footballguys view: Foreman is coming back from the Achilles' injury he sustained in Week 11 last year. When healthy, Foreman should work in a committee with starter Lamar Miller.

Texans | No restrictions for Deshaun Watson    Wed Jul 25, 06:04 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) has been fully cleared and will not be restricted during training camp, according to general manager Brian Gaine.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Texans, fans of the Texans and Fantasy GMs who are crazy (aren't we all?) about Watson. He's currently going off the board as the second quarterback drafted, only behind Packers superstar Aaron Rodgers. If Watson doesn't change his playing style and regains his pre-injury form we'll be looking at a young superstar for the Texans at the most important position. He's got a great group of weapons around him and a ferocious defense on the other side of the ball. The Texans could make a postseason run in 2018.

Texans | Two Texans go to PUP    Wed Jul 25, 01:40 PM

Houston Texans OT Martinas Rankin (foot) and TE Jevoni Robinson (undisclosed) were placed on the Physically Unable to Peform list for the start of training camp Wednesday, July 25.

  Texans | D'Onta Foreman a PUP victim    Wed Jul 25, 01:37 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Peform list Wednesday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Foreman suffered a torn Achilles' in Week 11 last season. He's still recovering from that injury and his exact timetable is a bit up in the air. Lamar Miller is the Texans starter for now, but when Foreman is healthy the team should move to a 2-headed RBBC approach at the position.

Texans | Deshaun Watson avoids PUP    Wed Jul 25, 12:51 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) passed his physical Wednesday, July 25, and avoided the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Watson has been ahead of schedule in his recovery for quite some time now. Fantasy GMs are over the moon about his prospects if he can regain his pre-injury form. Watson is currently getting drafted at QB2 (4.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | HOU edge rushers avoid PUP    Wed Jul 25, 12:46 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (knee) and DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) avoided the Physically Unable to Perform list. Both players passed their physicals.

Footballguys view: Clowney is in the final year of his deal and if healthy he could get a contract larger than Von Miller got a few years ago from the Broncos. Even though he avoided the PUP list, expect the Texans to ease Clowney back into action.

Texans | J.J. Watt in good shape    Tue Jul 24, 02:09 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (knee) passed his conditioning test with flying colors Tuesday, July 24.

Footballguys view: Watt is back to full strength after playing five games last year (and only eight games over the last two seasons). Having a healthy Watt will go a long way to helping the Texans defense perform at a high level in 2018. If the defense holds up and QB Deshaun Watson plays well, we could see the Texans make a playoff run this year.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman could be ready for opener    Sun Jul 22, 10:38 AM

The Houston Texans are hopeful that RB D'Onta Foreman (Achilles') will be fully recovered from a torn Achilles' tendon by the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: There isn't a running back who came all the way back to top physical form after suffering an achilles injury. Foreman's size/speed combination made him a potential heir to early down work in the Houston backfield, but his future contributions are up in the air. Lamar Miller has a limited ceiling, but could still be a fine discount RB2 with the uncertainty around Foreman.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney ready for camp    Sat Jul 21, 01:10 PM

Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) said he is ready for the start of training camp. Clowney would not say when he will start practicing.

Footballguys view: Clowney had a knee scope about six months ago and has missed all of the Texans offseason work. He's in a contract year in 2018, and the Texans have previously showed confidence about getting a long-term deal done with one of the league's premier pass rushers. We'll see if they can get something accomplished before the start of the regular season.

Texans | Deshaun Watson at full speed    Thu Jul 19, 10:28 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) said he will be a 'full-go' when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Texans and Fantasy GMs here. Watson has been ahead of schedule in his recovery for quite some time, so it's not a surprise to see this report. The Texans should be careful with Watson through training camp and the preseason with the plan to have him out there Week 1 of the regular season.

Texans | Keke Coutee gaining supporters    Sat Jul 14, 11:10 PM

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee will be able to help in the return game, according to retired WR Andre Johnson, and Johnson called Coutee a 'great receiver.'

Footballguys view: Coutee could do some damage out of the slot, and is a big-play creator, so we aren't shocked Johnson is impressed. Rookie receivers are shaky business, though, especially Day Three prospects, so we aren't rushing out to pick him up. We like the idea of him as a returner, and that could help earn some fantasy points for the Texans Defense/Special teams units.

Texans | Jeff Allen released    Fri Jul 13, 04:49 PM

Houston Texans OG Jeff Allen (undisclosed) was released from the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 13, after the two sides reached an injury settlement.

Texans | Will Fuller's speed opening eyes    Thu Jul 12, 09:53 PM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller impressed retired WR Andre Johnson with his speed. 'Man, he's flying,' Johnson said. 'He ran a few routes in practice the day I was there, and I was like, 'Wow.''

Footballguys view: Fuller was a WR1 with Deshaun Watson last year, but he wasn't durable, and Watson's season ended prematurely. Fuller is available for a WR3-WR4 price and has appeal in non-PPR and .5 PPR leagues, and leagues with big play bonuses.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins busy in the end zone in 2017    Mon Jul 9, 09:27 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins recorded 25 end zone targets in 2017, five more than any other player in the league, per Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: One of the best receivers in the NFL, there isn't much Hopkins doesn't do well. He's going to be one of the best fantasy plays week to week, especially with DeShaun Watson back and healthy. Both are one of the top options in fantasy at their positions and their positional ADP bears that out with both the second off the board at wide receiver and quarterback, respectively.

Texans | Braxton Miller on the bubble    Fri Jul 6, 04:12 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller will need to stay healthy and produce consistently if he wants to make the 53-man roster, in the opinion of the Houston Chronicle's John McClain.

Footballguys view: Miller has had limited impact since joining the team in 2016, and while he was still transitioning from quarterback to receiver in his rookie season, he should be further along. Injuries have held him back, but if he's healthy, he had better produce as the Texans seem to b e short of patience with him.

Texans | Alfred Blue has good chance to make roster    Fri Jul 6, 04:07 PM

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue likely will make the 53-man roster because of his special teams play, in the opinion of the Houston Chronicle's John McClain.

Footballguys view: Third man on the totem pole behind Lamar Miller and D′Onta Foreman, special teams is definitely the way he's staying on the team. The thing to remember is that Foreman is not healthy, and may not have healed enough from his ACL tear to be ready Week 1. That could also factor in on Blue's ability to stick. That said, we don't expect Blue to have a role in the backfield worth drafting him for, barring massive injuries.

Texans | Houston to spread the wealth at tight end    Tue Jul 3, 12:33 PM

Houston Texans TE Ryan Griffin will be relied on heavily in 2018, but tight ends coach Tim Kelly believes replacing the retired C.J. Fiedorowicz will be a collective effort. Griffin, Stephen Anderson, Jordan Akins and Jordan Thomas will all vie for snaps during training camp.

Footballguys view: Anderson is a move tight end and the best suited for fantasy production. Griffin has a longer tenure with the team, but like Fiedorowicz, has had concussion problems. Akins has the best straight line speed, and Thomas the overwhelming size. If there is going to be a third option in the passing game that is fantasy relevant, it is likely to be rookie wide receiver Keke Coutee.

Texans | Deshaun Watson not changing play    Wed Jun 27, 01:49 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) said he will not change his style of play even though he is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: In seven games last year, Watson set the league on fire...mostly with his arm (19 passing touchdowns) but also with his legs. During that time, Watson ran 36 times for 269 yards and two touchdowns. He injured his knee in November, but Watson is on track to participate fully in training camp and the preseason.

Texans | Kareem Jackson happy with new position    Tue Jun 26, 03:45 PM

Houston Texans CB Kareem Jackson said he likes the move to safety and is looking to help the team however he can this season.

Footballguys view: Some corners move to safety later in the their careers with great success. The Texans are hoping that's the case with Jackson, a first-round pick back in 2010. He's lost a step and isn't quite the same player he used to be. Jackson received snaps at the position during offseason workouts and training camp.

Texans | Jeff Allen on the bubble?    Mon Jun 25, 11:16 PM

Houston Texans OG Jeff Allen (undisclosed), who was placed on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform in May, is owed more than $7 million in 2018 and the team has an out in his contract this offseason - all of which could contribute to the Texans cutting him this summer, according to ESPN's Sarah Barshop.

Texans | Chris Thompson looking to build strength    Sat Jun 23, 12:46 PM

Houston Texans WR Chris Thompson said he has been working on trying to get stronger this offseason.

Footballguys view: Thompson was undrafted out of Florida in 2017, and he hauled in five catches for 84 yards as a rookie. His best skill set is that of a return man, and he's expected to compete with rookie WR Keke Coutee for the returner job during training camp.
