Texans | Houston only option for Tony Romo?    Fri Mar 24, 04:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo believes the Houston Texans and retirement are his options next season if he is released by the Cowboys, according to sources. The Denver Broncos are not pursing Romo, but they are not ruling out the possibility of signing him.

Footballguys view: Both FOX and CBS are pursuing Romo to be an analyst on TV. He'll have some options if and when the Cowboys release him. The Texans seem to be in the driver's seat at the moment.

Texans | Texans not interested in Jay Cutler    Tue Mar 21, 11:45 PM

The Houston Texans 'aren't an option' for free-agent QB Jay Cutler (Bears), according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. As a result, Cutler 'may just wait.'

Footballguys view: The Texans seem to be all in on Tony Romo. They don't seem intent on trading anything for Romo, but if/when released the Texans would likely compete hard with the Broncos for his services.

Texans | Brad Seaton works out for Houston    Sat Mar 18, 10:51 AM

The Houston Texans conducted a private workout with Villanova OT Brad Seaton Friday, March 17, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Seaton is a small-school prospect with rising draft stock. He's a mid-round pick, but this is a tackle class with a lot of question marks in front of him. Scouts like his size (6'8" 330 pounds) and functional strength. He was a mainstay on an offensive line that helped Villanova be one of the best rushing teams in their conference. He will regularly toss down players as a pass protector, and he's got the developmental upside to be a starter in the NFL.

Texans | Houston eyeing QB early in draft?    Fri Mar 17, 09:47 PM

The Houston Texans could use their first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft to select a quarterback, according to beat writer John McClain, and McClain believes Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes will be the target.

Footballguys view: This has been out there, and rumblings of the Texans interest in Mahomes seems to be getting louder and louder. This isn't a great QB class, but there's a chance that Mahomes is the best among the bunch. Mahomes has supreme confidence in his arm, and he's not afraid to challenge a defense vertically. In fact, Mahomes draft stock is rising so much that he may not be there when the Texans pick at no.25 in the first round.

Texans | Houston interested in Malcolm Butler    Tue Mar 14, 03:12 PM

New England Patriots restricted free-agent CB Malcolm Butler has drawn interest from the Houston Texans, according to a source. Houston is willing to give the Patriots a second-round pick for Butler if Butler signs a long-term contract.

Texans | Houston likely to draft a quarterback    Sun Mar 12, 01:29 PM

The Houston Texans are expected to take a quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft even if they eventually acquire Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo at some point this offseason, according to the Houston Chronicle's John McClain. Texans head coach Bill O'Brien has shown a preference for quarterbacks with size and arm strength making Notre Dame's DeShone Kizer and Texas Tech's Patrick Mahomes likely targets.

Footballguys view: Mahomes could be the team's target in the first round. That gives them the fifth-year option and time to develop Mahomes as he's coming from a system that is far from pro style.

Texans | Ryan Griffin staying in Houston    Sat Mar 11, 06:40 PM

Texans | Tom Savage could wind up in San Francisco    Tue Mar 7, 02:03 AM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage could end up with the San Francisco 49ers via trade if Houston ends up acquiring Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo at some point this offseason.

Footballguys view: The 49ers may be looking for a bridge quarterback at this time, and Savage would fit the bill. The Texans will have to compete with the Broncos for Romo.

Texans | Lighter load for Lamar Miller?    Sun Mar 5, 12:47 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller will likely see fewer carries, especially early in the year, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'We feel like we have a pretty diverse group of running backs so I think in order to get him at his best in January, we probably need to cut down on that early in the year,' O'Brien said.

Footballguys view: That assumes the Texans are going to be playing in January. Miller is the centerpiece of their offense, and if they don't get better QB play then he'll continue to play that role. If the Texans were to get QB Tony Romo, then Miller would likely see a reduction in his workload.

Texans | Houston a player for Tony Romo    Fri Mar 3, 09:27 PM

The Houston Texans are regarded as a strong contender to land Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo, according to several sources around the NFL.

Footballguys view: This is not new news. They've got a great defense and good weapons in the passing game...and oh yeah, a fine running back in Lamar Miller. Romo would be able to be close to home in Dallas if he stays in Texas and plays in Houston.

Texans | HOU intent on signing DeAndre Hopkins    Thu Mar 2, 11:45 AM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins is a player the team is intent on signing to a contract extension, according to general manager Rick Smith.

Footballguys view: There's no way the Texans let him go. Even if they still lack an answer at quarterback, Hopkins is too vital to this offense. Hopkins is going to be a big contract for them to swallow but is worth it.

Texans | Tyler Ervin could be third-down RB    Wed Feb 22, 03:02 PM

Houston Texans RB Tyler Ervin could serve as the team's third-down running back in 2017 if the team does not re-sign impending free-agent RB Jonathan Grimes this offseason.

Footballguys view: We would applaud that move. Ervin is super fast, super quick and dangerous anytime he touches the rock. A threat to score in the open field, Ervin could provide the Texans with field-flipping plays.

Texans | A.J. Bouye unlikely to receive tag    Wed Feb 15, 05:26 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent CB A.J. Bouye likely will not receive the franchise tag this offseason because of the team's salary cap situation. The Texans are expected to have around $25 million in salary cap space available, but Bouye would be scheduled to receive a little more than $14 million in 2017 if he received the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: The Texans would like to keep Bouye around, but they'll have to work out a long-term deal with him. Bouye is one of the best free agents at any position set to hit the open market. He could land a deal that makes him a top-10 paid cornerback in the league with an annual average salary around $12 million or more.

Texans | Nick Novak hopes to re-sign    Sat Feb 4, 02:09 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent PK Nick Novak said he hopes to re-sign with the Texans this offseason.

Footballguys view: Novak was among the top five in made field goals and the Texans combination of poor quarterback play and good defense should keep Novak or whoever replaces him among the most relevant fantasy kickers.

Texans | Brock Osweiler has support    Thu Feb 2, 10:46 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler has all the traits to be a successful quarterback, according to retired head coach Gary Kubiak, and Kubiak said Osweiler is 'going to be fine' in the long run.

Footballguys view: Perhaps the Texans should bring back Kubiak as an Osweiler "whisperer" because he seems to be the only one that believes in him now. Osweiler needs some confidence and perhaps only Kubiak can provide it.

Texans | HOU QBs to compete for starting gig    Thu Feb 2, 08:44 AM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler and QB Tom Savage will compete, likely with a quarterback from the 2017 NFL draft, for the starting spot next season, according to owner Bob McNair. The Texans could draft a quarterback in the first or second rounds.

Footballguys view: The Texans should also look into free agent Matt McGloin, who had an outstanding season with Texans head coach Bill O'Brien when they were both at Penn State in 2012.

Texans | Owners says Brock Osweiler needs to step up    Wed Feb 1, 03:24 PM

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said QB Brock Osweiler needs to step up his performance next season after he struggled in 2016.

Footballguys view: The only option the Texans seem to have is hoping for Osweiler to improve and calling him out publicly, as he is due 16 million dollars whether they want to keep him or not.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins may receive new deal    Wed Feb 1, 03:14 PM

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said the team will try to sign WR DeAndre Hopkins to a long-term extension this offseason.

Footballguys view: Hopkins took a big step back for fantasy this year, but he's still one of the premier receivers in the league. They can use their fifth-year option to keep him this year, but if they wait to sign him long term, a rising salary cap will cause his price to spike. Hopkins may want to leave if he wants a better quarterback situation and more productivity,

Texans | Houston wants to re-sign A.J. Bouye    Wed Feb 1, 03:11 PM

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said the team wants to sign impending free-agent CB A.J. Bouye to a long-term contract this offseason.

Footballguys view: Bouye isn't a household name, but he will be coveted if he hits the open market as a versatile and productive defensive back. The Texans should have a good chance to keep him as Bouye has said he wants to stay with the team.

Texans | Owner hopes Tom Savage competes for QB job    Wed Feb 1, 03:10 PM

Houston Texans owner Bob McNair said he would like to see QB Tom Savage compete for the starting quarterback job next season.

Footballguys view: Savage wasn't worse than Brock Osweiler, but that's not saying much. Ideally, the Texans will bring in someone like Matt McGloin, who flourished with head coach Bill O'Brien at Penn State and not cost much.

Texans | J.J. Watt doing well    Wed Feb 1, 09:05 AM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) said his rehab from back surgery is going well.

Footballguys view: The Texans were able to win another division title and even a playoff game without Watt this year. Next year, if they can improve at quarterback and get a healthy Watt back, they could go even farther in January.

Texans | Houston could pursue Jimmy Garoppolo    Tue Jan 31, 12:26 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo could be a possible trade target for the Houston Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson.

Footballguys view: The Texans are obviously in the market for a quarterback with Brock Osweiler's failings, but they are on the hook for 16 million guaranteed dollars to Osweiler this year. If they trade what would likely be a first-round pick for Garoppolo, they would have to tie up an inordinate amount of money if they sign Garoppolo to a long-term deal and keep Osweiler (which seems to be impossible to avoid). Alternatively, they could wait until 2018 to offer Garoppolo a deal, but if he plays well in 2017, the price will be much higher than Osweiler's. It makes sense from a team need point of view, but the contract given to Osweiler hurts the possibility of it happening.

Texans | Houston announces several staff changes    Mon Jan 30, 07:35 PM

Updating a previous report, the Houston Texans have hired former NFL WR Wes Welker as an offensive/special teams assistant and former Los Angeles Chargers assistant coach Bobby King as their linebackers coach. Wide receivers coach Sean Ryan has been named the quarterbacks coach, Tight ends coach John Perry has been named the wide receivers coach and assistant Tim Kelly has been named the tight ends coach.

Footballguys view: The Texans coaching staff has been shaken up even though there are few new names. The team made the playoffs again this year, and even won a playoff game, but after firing offensive coordinator George Godsey earlier this month, it was clear that they wanted change on the offensive side of the ball.

Texans | Bobby King expected to join Texans staff    Mon Jan 30, 06:54 PM

The Houston Texans are expected to hire former Los Angeles Chargers assistant coach Bobby King as their new linebackers coach.

Footballguys view: King was the Texans assistant linebackers coach from 2012-2013 and was part of their big defensive turnaround. It should be an easy transition for him to his new role.

Texans | Houston expected to hire Wes Welker    Mon Jan 30, 06:48 PM

Former NFL WR Wes Welker is expected to join the Houston Texans coaching staff as an offensive assistant.

Footballguys view: Welker has five years in New England with head coach Bill O'Brien under his belt, and he could help ultra-athletic slot receiver and QB convert Braxton Miller with his transition to wide receiver.

Texans | Brian Cushing had surgery    Mon Jan 30, 03:28 PM

Houston Texans LB Brian Cushing (shoulder) underwent shoulder surgery two weeks ago. Cushing played through pain this season but only missed two games after playing last season with broken bones in his lower back.

Footballguys view: Cushing should be ready to go for camp at the latest, as the surgery was described as a "clean up" by him. He has had trouble staying healthy throughout his career and missed three games in 2016.

Texans | Braxton Miller ready for next step    Sat Jan 28, 08:48 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller said he learned a lot of small details about the receiver position this season and plans to 'turn it up to another level' in 2017.

Footballguys view: Miller was a converted quarterback in college who has only been playing wide receiver for a couple of seasons. He's got a lot to learn, but Miller's athleticism and competitive nature give him an edge. We'll be monitoring his progress in dynasty leagues, and we'll feel better about Miller if (when) the Texans upgrade their quarterback situation.

Texans | Braxton Miller healthy    Sat Jan 28, 02:49 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller (shoulder) said he did not need surgery on his injured shoulder and has been healthy for the last few weeks.

Footballguys view: Miller is a player we're monitoring in dynasty leagues. Still learning how to play wide receiver, the converted quarterback has great upside in year two of his pro career. We'll see if the Texans can find a way to get better play out of their quarterback position.

Texans | Vince Wilfork leaning toward retirement    Sat Jan 28, 01:35 PM

Houston Texans DT Vince Wilfork said he is leaning toward retiring and expects to make a final decision on his future within the next few weeks.

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is not expected to miss any of the team's offseason workouts because of his arthroscopic knee surgery.

Footballguys view: The surgery is considered minor, but it is a bit concerning due to Clowney's injury history. Even if he's ready for OTAs, we can't see the Texans rushing him back. Clowney should be good to go for training camp.
