Texans | Deshaun Watson won't be limited in Texans offense    Sun Jun 25, 08:17 PM

Jared Dubin, of CBSSports.com, reports Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien says rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson won't be limited in the offense. "We put a lot on his plate during the spring, and he handled it very well," O'Brien said, per the Houston Chronicle. "He made mistakes, and he corrected them. You don't see him make the same mistake twice. He can do a lot of things. He can operate our running game and in our passing game. He's got a lot of athleticism. I don't think we'll have to limit him. Training camp and preseason games will be a big test."

Footballguys view: We feel Watson starts for the Texans this year. He's competing with veteran Tom Savage for the starting job in training camp. Watson doesn't have a rocket arm and he'll throw the ball up for grabs sometimes (too often). However, he plays biggest in the brightest moments and has ice in his veins as a passer. With that defense and the weapons around Watson on offense, the Texans should push for the playoffs in 2017.

Texans | Braxton Miller working towards big year    Sat Jun 24, 09:39 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has spent time diving into the playbook to better understand coverages, according to wide receivers coach John Perry, and Perry believes Miller has the versatility to play in the slot and outside.

Footballguys view: Miller is still learning the nuances of the WR position. A converted quarterback during his college career at Ohio State, Miller has incredible athleticism, speed and quickness. He's the no3 wideout for the Texans behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller. Projecting Miller for 30 catches in 2017 seems accurate. That's not a 'big' year for fantasy owners in redraft leagues, but Miller is a great dynasty prospect with incredible upside.

Texans | Houston wants more from Ryan Griffin     Fri Jun 23, 11:18 PM

Houston Texans TE Ryan Griffin needs to be more effective in red zone this season, according to the coaching staff.

Footballguys view: Griffin had six red-zone targets in 2016, catching four passes for 24 yards and two touchdowns near pay dirt. His stat line overall (50 catches, 442 yards, two TDs) helped him finish as the no27 fantasy tight end in 2016. The Texans have a plethora of pass-catching talent that will likely take targets away from Griffin in 2017.

Texans | Wendall Williams could carve out a role    Fri Jun 23, 09:37 PM

Houston Texans WR Wendall Williams might be the fastest player on the team, according to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, and McClain believes Williams could break camp as the fourth or fifth receiver if he can improve his route running.

Footballguys view: We see Williams as the fifth WR on the depth chart for the Texans behind DeAndre Hopkins, Will Fuller, Braxton Miller and Jaelen Strong. Undrafted out of the University of the Cumberlands in 2016, Williams is used to a heavy target load and uses his speed to blaze by defenders deep. In super deep dynasty leagues, we'll be monitoring his progress.

Texans | Deshaun Watson coming along nicely    Fri Jun 23, 01:57 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson has impressed head coach Bill O'Brien with his poise, intelligence and athleticism in a recent interview with the Houston Chronicle.

Footballguys view: We think Watson wins this job over Tom Savage. With his rushing ability and the great receiving weapons around him, Watson should be a Qb2 with upside for fantasy owners.

Texans | Braxton Miller making strides    Fri Jun 23, 12:43 AM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller was praised for his progress in OTAs by assistant coach Wes Welker.

Footballguys view: Miller was a converted quarterback from Ohio State who barely started learning the wide receiver position in college. He's a phenomenal athlete and could be a fine slot receiver for the Texans. Their passing game is a bit of a question mark with rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson as the likely starter. That limits Miller's fantasy impact (especially behind DeAndre Hopkins and Will Fuller), and we'd project the second-year pro for around 25 catches in 2017.

Texans | Houston wants to keep Lamar Miller fresh    Wed Jun 21, 02:22 PM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller received 268 carries in 2016 but likely will see a drop in his carries this season so the team could keep him fresher later in the season. Running backs coach Charles London said the team has a diverse group of running backs, which will allow the team to balance Miller's workload.

Footballguys view: With the addition of rookie D'Onta Foreman, we could see a smaller amount of carries for Miller as the team tries to manage his touches. He can be just as effective on fewer touches if used the right way. Miller is more comfortable in this offense, and the team has better weapons around him. Fantasy owners should consider Miller a RB2 with RB1 upside.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman looking to drop weight    Mon Jun 19, 07:13 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman said he would like to lose a few pounds before the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Coming out of Texas, Foreman is listed at 233 pounds. That's a big back but he has a rather finesse style as a runner for such a big man. We'll see if the rookie can beat out Alfred Blue for the primary backup behind Lamar Miller.

Texans | Braxton Miller, Will Fuller improving     Sun Jun 18, 09:49 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller and WR Will Fuller have made big jumps in their second seasons, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Miller is still learning the position as he converted from quarterback late in his career at Ohio State. The second-year pro has outstanding athleticism and can be dangerous after the catch. Fuller is a speed guy who needs better concentration. Both are dangerous weapons who make for interesting 'lottery ticket' picks late in your fantasy draft.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman financial details    Sun Jun 18, 10:31 AM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman's four-year contract is worth $3.259 million and comes with a signing bonus worth $759,000.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman signs contract    Sat Jun 17, 05:40 PM

Houston Texans third-round draft choice RB D'Onta Foreman signed his four-year contract Saturday, June 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Foreman is a big back, measuring in at 6'0" 233 pounds. He's not as powerful as his size would indicate as Foreman has the athleticism to play more like a finesse runner. He's competing with Alfred Blue for the backup role behind Lamar Miller in 2017.

Texans | Tom Savage still in lead for QB job    Fri Jun 16, 04:24 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is still considered the leading candidate for the starting No. 1 quarterback but will have to earn the job during training camp, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Savage has the experience advantage over rookie DeShaun Watson. He's a tall, strong-armed pocket passer with say-it-don't-spray-it accuracy. Watson is simply the more exciting prospect here. He plays big in the biggest moments and is tough as nails. Watson is athletic, unafraid to challenge defenses and has quality weapons around him in the passing attack. Watson could win the starting job if he outperforms Savage in training camp and the preseason.

Texans | Kareem Jackson moving around    Fri Jun 16, 04:22 PM

Texans | Bill O'Brien to be more 'hands on' in 2017    Thu Jun 15, 03:43 PM

John McClain of the Houston Chronicle reports that Texans head coach Bill O'Brien wants to be more 'hands on' in 2017. "I think one of the changes that needed to be made this year was for me to be more hands-on," O'Brien said Wednesday. "That's really what I love to do -- coach the players and be around the players. I love coaching these players."

Footballguys view: O'Brien has to be starting to feel the heat given the failures of the offense during his tenure. We think he can improve its output but that will come down to the play of rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson. If he implodes, O'Brien will likely take the fall. Honestly, anything less than superb play over the next two years might not help O'Brien if the Texans don't get more than a cup of coffee in the playoffs. One and done with this defense is unacceptable.

Texans | J.J. Watt feeling good    Wed Jun 14, 02:49 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) said his surgically repaired back is feeling great and that he has not suffered any setbacks during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: All reports this offseason have been positive about Watt as he continues to recover from back surgery. Projecting 15 sacks or more for Watt in 2017 is not outlandish.

Texans | Duane Brown not expected at minicamp    Mon Jun 12, 06:14 PM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown is expected to skip the mandatory minicamp that starts Tuesday, June 13, because he is unhappy with his contract situation, according to a source. The Texans can fine him as much as $80,400 if he decides to miss all three days.

Footballguys view: Brown is under contract through 2018, but there's no more guaranteed money remaining on his deal. He's got a cap hit of $9.6 million in 2017 and $9.7 million in 2018. Brown missed the first four games of 2016 with a torn quad, but he was a standout tackle upon his return.

Texans | Tom Savage taking advantage of reps    Sun Jun 4, 12:01 AM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage said taking reps with the first-team offense has been a great opportunity to work on his timing and communication with WR DeAndre Hopkins and the other starters.

Footballguys view: Savage has the experience in this QB competition and that should give him at least a slight advantage over rookie first-round pick Deshaun Watson. However, Watson is much more talented and athletic than the big pocket passer Savage. Even if Savage were to win the no1 QB job coming out of training camp, we can't see him playing a full season. Injuries have usually plagued him, and any sort of misstep by him would open the door for Watson. We think Watson could win the job to begin the year, and he's got sneaky fantasy value because of his skill set and the quality players around him on offense. Stay tuned.

Texans | Will Fuller striving for consistency    Fri Jun 2, 11:51 PM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller said he focused on 'catching the ball consistently' this offseason. 'Wherever the ball is coming from, you catch it with your hands and catch it with your eyes,' Fuller said.

Footballguys view: Fuller is a speed guy, and he can get by a defender in the blink of an eye. However, concentration problems have plagued him from back in his college days at Notre Dame to now as a pro entering his second year. He had four drops as rookie last year, a mark that tied for 2nd on the team (C.J. Fiedorowicz, 5). His 4.4 percent drop rate (drops per target) ranked 25th in the NFL in 2016 for starting wide receivers.

Texans | Houston cuts ties with two    Fri Jun 2, 02:51 PM

Houston Texans WR Keith Mumphery and LB Max Bullough were waived Friday, June 2.

Footballguys view: Mumphery was recently expelled and banned from Michigan State due to a violation of the school's relationship violence and sexual misconduct policy. Bullough was suspended four games for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing substances. Neither player was in for a large role in 2017.

Texans | Braxton Miller seeks help from assistant    Thu Jun 1, 02:15 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has reached out to former veteran NFL wide receiver and Houston Texans offensive assistant coach Wes Welker. Miller is trying to glean what he can from Welker in order to be a better slot receiver. Miller said Welker corrects what he does wrong and then Miller tries to fix it on the next play.

Footballguys view: Miller is still learning, as he only played wide receiver but we like his potential. We just don't expect him to reach it this year. That said, this is a great sign and a fantastic idea. Miller isn't seeing much interest in redraft leagues, and is not worth more than a late pick to fill out your roster. A converted college quarterback, Miller is still learning the nuances of the WR position.

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (hamstring) is participating in organized team activities Wednesday, May 31.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins learning from Wes Welker    Fri May 26, 11:40 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins said it has been great learning from assistant coach Wes Welker.

Footballguys view: Welker was a fine route runner during his time in the NFL. Hopkins is a different type of wide receiver from what Welker used to be, but he can still learn about setting up routes and getting open from the former Pro Bowler. With better QB play in 2017, Hopkins should get back to his expected level of production after a down season in 2016.

Texans | Will Fuller trying to add weight    Tue May 23, 12:06 AM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller said he's planning on trying to gain some weight for the upcoming season. 'I think the most I've ever weighed is probably about 190, and I felt pretty good,' he said. 'That was around the combine. If I can get to that weight and keep my speed, that would be perfect.' Fuller is currently listed at 180 pounds.

Footballguys view: Fuller is a speed guy, but he wants some added weight to be more durable. His big play ability makes Fuller an intriguing late-round prospect for fantasy owners. Fuller has a current ADP of WR71 (14.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Deshaun Watson unsure he'll start Week 1    Fri May 19, 03:02 PM

Houston Texans first-round pick QB Deshaun Watson admitted he has 'no idea' if he'll be the Week 1 starter.

Footballguys view: Watson will compete with Tom Savage to be the Texans starter this year. Capable of making big plays at the brightest moments, Watson should be able to win the job provided he can effectively take care of the ball. He'll challenge a defense but that has led to some costly interceptions. His transition from the spread/shotgun attack at Clemson to a pro-style attack with the Texans will take some time.

Houston Texans OT Dimitric Camiel, RB Kenny Hilliard, T.J. Mutcherson and WR Tevin Jones were released Tuesday, May 16. RB Dare Ogunbowale was re-signed and undrafted free-agent WR Chris Thompson (Florida) was signed in corresponding moves.

Footballguys view: Ogunbowale showed good ability in college at Wisconsin, but he should only be counted on as a reserve or change-of-pace back. The Texans have a talented backfield, and Ogunbowale is going to have a hard time cracking the 53-man roster.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman working on conditioning     Sun May 14, 11:00 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman has some work to do in order to reach ideal football shape, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, and Foreman spent Saturday, May 13, riding a stationary bike at rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: That's not what you want to hear about a big-bodied running back. Foreman is large but he'll go with finesse moves over power even though he's 230 pounds. He's got average burst and at times it too impatient when allowing time for blocks to develop. The rookie from Texas will compete with Alfred Blue for reserve snaps behind Lamar Miller.

Texans | J.J. Watt feels 'fantastic'    Sun May 14, 11:23 AM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) told the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson he feels 'fantastic' after undergoing a pair of microdiscectomy surgeries last season to repair the same herniated disk in his back.

Footballguys view: Great news for Watt and the Texans here. Watt missed most of last year (appeared in only three games) due to this back problem, and the multiple surgeries to repair the damage. He'll be limited during OTAs and minicamp, but it sounds like he should be good to go for the start of training camp.
