Texans | Nuke, Nate Washington top depth chart    Tue Aug 4, 01:53 AM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins and WR Nate Washington are atop the depth chart right now, head coach Bill O'Brien said Monday, Aug. 3.

Footballguys view: We love Hopkins. However, his quarterback situation is among the worst in the league. Hopkins should be considered a low-end WR1, and if you can somehow get him as a WR2 even better.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney getting closer    Mon Aug 3, 12:32 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is close to a return after having microfracture surgery last December on his right knee. Head coach Bill O'Brien said the goal is to have Clowney back on the field Aug. 17.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney two weeks away    Mon Aug 3, 11:07 AM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is expected to return to the field Monday, Aug. 17, according to Texans head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Clowney is coming back off of microfracture surgery, which can leave a player a shadow of himself. Travis Kelce seems to be doing fine after rookie year microfracture surgery, though. If he is even 80-90% of the player he was at his peak in South Carolina, Clowney should help the Texans defense remain a top 3 fantasy option and perhaps help the team push for a wild card spot.

Texans | Ryan Mallet works with first-team    Sun Aug 2, 07:16 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallet worked with the first-team offense Sunday, Aug. 2, after QB Brian Hoyer worked with the first-team Saturday, Aug. 1. 'Whenever he (Bill O'Brien) feels like someone is ready to be named the starter that's what he'll do, and whatever way it goes, I have really a lot of trust and faith in him,' Hoyer said. 'Whatever he decides will be best for the team.'

Footballguys view: The Texans have one of the worst quarterback situations in the league. Mallet is competing with veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer for the starting job. No matter who wins, the Texans aren't going to have a high-powered passing game in 2015.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney placed on PUP    Mon Jul 27, 05:07 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: This should come as no surprise. Clowney is reportedly walking without a limp, but he's still recovering from the microfracture surgery on his knee that ended his rookie season. His status for Week 1 is unknown, but it's possible he could miss the first six weeks of the regular season on the PUP list too.

Texans | Alan Bonner placed on NFI list    Mon Jul 27, 05:02 PM

Houston Texans WR Alan Bonner (undisclosed) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Monday, July 27.

Footballguys view: A sixth-round pick in 2013, Bonner spent his rookie season on Injured Reserve due to a hamstring injury. Last year, a fractured foot caused him to miss another season. A leg injury forced Bonner to leave offseason workout earlier this year.

Texans | Nate Washington could be No. 2 WR    Fri Jul 24, 03:49 PM

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington is projected to be the No. 2 wide receiver behind WR DeAndre Hopkins and ahead of WR Cecil Shorts, according to Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Shorts might be best used as a slot receiver. However, the team has rookie Jaelen Strong currently as the fourth receiver on the depth chart. Don't be surprised if Strong can work his way up to the starting lineup at some point this year.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney looking good    Wed Jul 22, 05:03 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) looks spectacular, according to a team doctor. Clowney is seven months removed from microfracture surgery on his knee. It was previously reported that Clowney will probably be brought along slowly in training camp and could end up being ready for the regular season opener.

Footballguys view: He may look spectacular according to the team doctor, but that shouldn't change the team's approach with the second-year pass-rusher. We'll see if Clowney can start getting after the quarterback this season after his rookie season was a bust.

Texans | Jaelen Strong sheds 20 pounds    Wed Jul 22, 08:16 AM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong posted on Twitter that he is down from 231 pounds at rookie camp to 211 pounds Tuesday, July 21.

Footballguys view: Strong had good build-up speed in college at Arizona State, and he ran a 4.4 at the Scouting Combine earlier this year. However, that speed didn't show up on film. By playing at a lighter weight, Strong should be more explosive than ever before. We love his skill set (powerful, strong hands) on underneath routes, but it's hard to get excited about anyone outside of DeAndre Hopkins in that passing game with the current QB situation.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney to be brought back slowly     Mon Jul 20, 04:55 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) will not be rushed back in his recovery from microfracture surgery. Clowney is on schedule in his recovery and could play Week 1.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but his rookie season was a bust due to this injury. If he doesn't want his career to be a bust, then coming back from microfracture surgery is going to take some time. It's best that the Texans ease him back into action so they don't risk re-injuring their potential star pass-rusher.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney could start Week 1    Mon Jul 20, 04:50 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is continuing his rehabilitation process but could be healthy enough in time to play the season opener against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Even if Clowney starts in Week 1 against the Chiefs, we could see him playing more of a part-time role. Coming back from microfracture surgery, Clowney is going to be eased back into the lineup.

Texans | Houston not interested in Reggie Wayne    Mon Jul 20, 12:28 PM

Updating an earlier report, free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) isn't of interest to the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Well if Wayne wants to play for a Super Bowl contender this year, he's best to avoid Houston. The Texans have a strong defense and a quality rushing attack, but their QB situation leaves a lot to be desired.

Texans | Reggie Wayne drawing interest from HOU    Mon Jul 20, 08:27 AM

Free-agent WR Reggie Wayne (Colts) is drawing interest from the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: The Texans could use better wide receiver depth after losing Andre Johnson to the Colts in free agency. Wayne could work as a mentor for rookie Jaelen Strong and give the team valuable veteran depth. The Texans are not a Super Bowl contender due to their poor QB situation, so Wayne may not want to go there in the twilight of his career.

Texans | Arian Foster in rare company    Tue Jul 14, 04:17 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster became the seventh player in the last 20 years to score at least five rushing and five receiving touchdowns in the same season in 2014.

Footballguys view: Talent can come from anywhere. Foster was undrafted out of Tennessee in 2009, but he has developed into one of the best in the game at his position. Fantasy owners expect him to be a top-10 fantasy running back again this year. His current ADP is RB7 (2.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Arian Foster has nose for end zone    Sat Jul 11, 11:56 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster has scored 62 total touchdowns in 66 games since taking over as the primary running back, including 13 in 13 games last year.

Footballguys view: Foster scores like an elite RB1 any time he is on the field, but knowing how many games he will miss or be limited for in a given year is the hitch. He is rightfully going in the late first/early second round because of injury risk, but Foster will be projected as top 5 RB in any week that he is anything but a game-time decision.

Texans | Have contact with Chris Myers    Fri Jul 10, 04:23 PM

Free-agent C Chris Myers (Texans) has been in contact with the Houston Texans about the possibility of re-signing with the Texans.

Texans | Cecil Shorts to move around on offense    Fri Jul 10, 04:21 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts is expected to line up as an outside receiver as well as a slot receiver this season.

Footballguys view: The Texans passing game is going to have trouble producing more than one fantasy relevant passcatcher - DeAndre Hopkins - and Shorts is injury-prone, so he's not worth a pick in most leagues.

Texans | Alfred Blue works with Arian Foster    Fri Jul 10, 03:58 PM

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue has been working with RB Arian Foster on improving his skills on third downs. Blue could see playing time on third downs this season.

Footballguys view: Blue is going to be a dogfight with free agent pick Chris Polk for the backup RB spot. Polk is a better receiver and Blue wasn't impressive in his audition last year when Foster went down, so monitor this situation throughout the summer because Foster's handcuff is one of the more valuable backups in the league.

Texans | Houston has close QB competition    Fri Jul 10, 03:38 PM

Houston Texans QBs Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer are competing for the starting quarterback job and there is no clear favorite for the job, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Hoyer appeared to be more comfortable than Mallett during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Hoyer has more experience in O'Brien's system from his time in New England, but Mallett has the better arm and more experience with the Texans. Either way, this will be one of the bottom five QB situations in the NFL.

Texans | Houston had Peyton Manning talks    Wed Jun 24, 11:49 AM

Updating previous reports, Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning was the subject of preliminary trade discussions with the Houston Texans, according to a source. The talks occurred before Manning restructured his deal and the Texans signed QB Brian Hoyer. If the Texans were to acquire Manning they would have had to restructure Manning's deal and SportsRadio 610's source says the money in Houston would not have been as high as the $15 million Manning got from the Broncos.

Footballguys view: Ah, the unnamed sources. Listen, could the Broncos have pondered life without Manning? Sure, we're open to that. However, this "scoopage" about a deal that didn't happen and now won't happen (new no-trade clause when Manning restructured) is folly. Manning's agent was never contacted, so this rumor or report or out and out BS is coming from a world of semantics and half truths.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney ahead of schedule    Sat Jun 20, 09:04 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is progressing so well from microfracture surgery that the new goal is to have him on the field for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Clowney was the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he didn't make much of an impact last year as a rookie. Inactive for most of the season, Clowney only appeared in four games and made a total of seven tackles for the year. Reports have been positive about his recovery, but we won't know how the cartilage in his knee regenerates until he gets back to the football field in a full role. He may be ready for the start of training camp, but the Texans will ease him into action.

Texans | Jaelen Strong could start    Sat Jun 20, 03:22 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong has a chance to start in his rookie year, according to Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Strong was one of our favorite receivers in this year's draft class. He reminds us a lot of a young Marques Colston because of his size and run-after-the-catch ability. We'd be more excited about the Texans passing game if their quarterback situation wasn't so terrible. Strong will compete with veteran Cecil Shorts to start opposite DeAndre Hopkins. Shorts might end up as a better slot option if he can beat out Nate Washington.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz improving    Wed Jun 17, 03:41 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz is very improved this offseason, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Fiedorowicz is a mountain of a man who knows how to use his body to box out defenders. He can work well as a blocker, but there's more to him as a receiver than some think. However, the horrible QB situation in Houston will hold the team's passing game back. Monitor Fiedorowicz in super deep dynasty leagues and hope that Houston gets a better quarterback.

Texans | Nate Washington doing well    Wed Jun 17, 03:37 PM

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington has performed well this offseason, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Washington is a seasoned veteran who should have no trouble working as the WR3 for the Texans offense. We'll see DeAndre Hopkins and Cecil Shorts on the outside for the Texans this season. Only Hopkins has fantasy relevance as he should be able to get decent production even in a bad quarterback situation.

Texans | Damaris Johnson opening eyes    Tue Jun 16, 11:46 AM

Houston Texans WR Damaris Johnson has consistently played well in practices, in the opinion of beat writer John McClain. McClain tweeted: 'every time I look up he's catching a pass or a touchdown pass.'

Footballguys view: We'd be more excited about Johnson if the Texans quarterback situation wasn't so bad. Johnson caught 31 passes for 331 yards with one touchdown for the Texans last season. With DeAndre Hopkins, Cecil Shorts, Nate Washington and Jaelen Strong all above him on the depth chart, Johnson could be hard-pressed to match those numbers this season.

Texans | Jaelen Strong out with hamstring injury    Tue Jun 16, 09:01 AM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong (hamstring) has been out since the team's first organized team activities due to a hamstring injury. The injury is believed to be minor.

Footballguys view: Strong is one of our favorite receivers from this rookie class. He's big, swift and difficult to bring down after the catch. Strong can turn short passes into long gains, and he's fearless when running routes over the middle. The quarterback situation is terrible in Houston, so we're not expecting a ton of production from the passing game--including Strong--in 2015.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney will be limited    Fri Jun 12, 11:37 AM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) should be ready for Week 1, but the team isn't planning to give him a full load of snaps right away, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: That's a smart move for the Texans. Clowney was the number-one overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he only appeared in four games last year and failed to register a sack. If healthy, Clowney could be a very disruptive pass-rusher. We'll see if he can get healthy enough to be effective (and dangerous) in 2015.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney should be ready for Week 1    Thu Jun 11, 01:40 PM

Houston Texans DE Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The Texans can't afford the 2014 first-overall draft pick to miss another year after he missed his rookie season. With questions about work-ethic and drive still on some people's minds, Clowney has much to prove in order to avoid being labeled a "bust" in his second season.

Texans | HOU may name QB before camp    Thu Jun 11, 01:28 PM

Houston Texans QBs Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer are candidates for the starting quarterback job, and head coach Bill O'Brien indicated the team may name a starting quarterback before the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Hoyer is an aggressively average quarterback (some would say scrappy) while Mallett is inconsistent with a much bigger arm. Right now, early redraft owners are split but neither quarterback is getting traction. The Texans want to run the ball as much as possible and play great defense. The QB situation just isn't going to be that attractive for fantasy owners, despite the weapons around them in the passing game.

Texans | Arian Foster will be focus when healthy    Wed Jun 10, 07:10 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster will get plenty of work on the ground this season, so long as he can stay healthy, according to head coach Bill O'Brien Wednesday, June 10. 'Well, we have a very good running back,' O'Brien said. 'So you can rest assured that as long as he's healthy and he's out there, we will run the ball. I can tell you that. That's one thing we will do,' said O'Brien. Foster has been available throughout organized team activities, and he has attended all of the Texans' voluntary offseason programs.

Footballguys view: Foster has to be the focus because the Texans QBs aren't so very good. They may have the worst collection of quarterbacks in the entire league. This team wants to play swarming defense and run the ball early and often. Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett and Tom Savage don't excite us in the least bit....even in dynasty leagues.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins sitting out OTAs    Mon Jun 8, 06:46 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins (wrist) has not been participating in organized team activities since he is recovering from offseason surgery. Head coach Bill O'Brien said he believe Hopkins will be ready to participate at some point during training camp.

Footballguys view: Hopkins had wrist surgery back in February, and he should be back for training camp. He may not be ready at the start of training camp, but we could see him worked back in slowly as the preseason rolls on. This injury should not hamper his outlook for the 2015 season....the Texans QBs could do that. Hopkins has the talent to be a top-10 receiver in the NFL, but bad QB play could keep his fantasy production around WR15-WR20. Draft him accordingly.

Texans | Houston names George Godsey OC    Mon Jun 8, 02:09 PM

Houston Texans quarterbacks coach George Godsey has been named the team's offensive coordinator.

Footballguys view: The Texans were the only team that didn't have an offensive coordinator, and now that's changed. Godsey and head coach Bill O'Brien ran the offense last year, so don't expect a lot of changes in philosophy. The two have a long work history together, dating back to their days at Georgia Tech. When O'Brien was promoted to be the offensive coordinator of the Patriots in 2011, he brought along Godsey as the tight ends coach. Even when O'Brien went to be the head coach at Penn State, he wanted to bring Godsey with him but that move was blocked by Bill Belichick.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz feeling more comfortable    Wed Jun 3, 07:19 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz said Wednesday, June 3, he feels more comfortable during organized team activities entering his second season in the NFL than he did in his rookie year. 'There was so much learning last year,' Fiedorowicz said. 'You come up the huddle and there's three or four things. You got to know the protection, you got to know where to line up, read the safeties, see what kind of coverage it is. There was just so much going through my head where I wasn't able to play fast. I noticed already this OTA session, I'm going out there and when I see it I'm going fast. The quarterbacks are really seeing us right now, so we're all excited,' said Fiedorowicz. As a rookie, Fiedorowicz caught four of his seven targets, including one touchdown thrown by RB Arian Foster. The Texans targeted their tight ends a league-low 51 times in 2014.

Footballguys view: Fiedorowicz is a huge target who can make his presence felt in the red zone. He knows how to use his frame to box out smaller defenders, and he can be a reliable target for whoever ends up as the Texans QB. He'll work behind Garrett Graham as the Texans TE2 in 2015.

Texans | Tom Savage making progress    Tue Jun 2, 11:09 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage is not in the mix to be the starting quarterback, as QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett battle it out, but Savage has made steady progress according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Savage is being groomed as the franchise's quarterback of the future.

Footballguys view: What a future! Let's be honest here....there's not a lot to like about Savage's game. He bounced around in college (Rutgers, Arizona, Pitt) and was not a consistent player with accuracy or decision making. Savage is not a threat to scramble or keep plays alive with his feet. He's a statuesque thrower with a rocket arm and slow recognition skills. Good luck with that Houston.

Texans | Mack Brown waived    Tue Jun 2, 05:54 PM

Houston Texans rookie RB Mack Brown (Florida) was waived Tuesday, June 2.

Footballguys view: Brown worked as a reserve running back behind Matt Jones during his time with the Florida Gators. At 5'11" 205 pounds, Brown lacks the speed to make an impact at the pro level. His most productive season in college came in 2013 when he carried the ball 148 times for 543 yards--and average of only 3.6 yards per carry.

Texans | No timetable for HOU's QB competition    Mon Jun 1, 02:07 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are both seeing time with the first-team offense during organized team activities, but head coach Bill O'Brien said there is no timetable for naming a starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: This is likely the most boring quarterback competition in the league. Hoyer has the experience edge, but Mallett has the stronger arm. We'll see this unfold in training camp and the preseason, but fantasy owners should not be adding the winner to their rosters.

Texans | Brian Hoyer, Ryan Mallett splitting reps    Thu May 28, 02:14 PM

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer split first-team repetitions in offseason workouts Wednesday, May 27, with QB Ryan Mallett. 'The tempo (stood out),' said Hoyer. 'You can tell we put a lot of work in and guys were just prepared. There weren't a lot of mental mistakes. Guys came ready to go and it was exciting -- got after it a little bit.'

Footballguys view: The Battle For King Mediocre has begun in Houston - try not to snore when you fall asleep monitoring this competition. We know Hoyer is an average-at-best quarterback, which tells you all you need to know about the progress of one Ryan Mallett. A dark horse is Tom Savage, but he's still a project and might be a year away from really being a contender for the job. Houston has a tremendous defense, some excellent offensive weapons and a solid offensive line--but no quarterback. If anything holds them back from true contention this year, it will be the lack of a quality passer.

Updating an ongoing story, Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) is doing well in his recovery from microfracture surgery. Clowney has been working hard at rehabbing the knee, according to Texans head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Clowney had better get on track or the "bust" term is going to be flying around him more than it is today. He was the number one overall pick last year, but Clowney failed to stay healthy as a rookie and made no impact. At this time, he's almost six months removed from microfracture surgery.

Texans | Ryan Mallett ready to go    Thu May 14, 03:34 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (pectoral) said he is feeling better each day and does not think he has any restrictions from the pectoral injury he suffered during the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Right now, Mallett's ADP is after the 15th round, but a solid training camp could push him up the board. He has talented weapons around him but he's unproven and inconsistent.

Texans | Houston QBs to share reps    Tue May 12, 03:17 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett will split first-team repetitions once organized team activities (OTAs) begin later this month.

Footballguys view: Awesome, too bad they don't have better quarterbacks to choose from. The Texans have a fine group of skill position players, led by Arian Foster and DeAndre Hopkins. They won't be able to get the most out of their passing game unless Hoyer, Mallett or Tom Savage start to play out of this world. This will hold the fantasy potential of the offense back in 2015.

  Texans | Jaelen Strong's conditioning a concern    Mon May 11, 04:20 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong needs to improve his conditioning, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien added that his rookie class as a whole needed to improve their conditioning.

Footballguys view: That last sentence is important to highlight...O'Brien was calling out all the rookies on the roster. Strong is a larger receiver, and he reminds us of a young Marques Colston. Too bad the Texans quarterback situation is one of the worst in the league. Strong gives the Texans a nice starting option opposite DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | D.J. Swearinger leaves Texans    Mon May 11, 11:52 AM

Houston Texans SS D.J. Swearinger announced on Instagram that he and the team parted ways Monday, May 11.

Footballguys view: Things change pretty quickly around here. Swearinger was a second-round pick in the 2013 NFL draft but he couldn't make a positive impression with the Texans. Swearinger failed to make plays against the run or the pass, and that's why no team was willing to trade for him. Now that he's on the open market, there might be a few teams interested in giving Swearinger a look.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins one of the best?    Sat May 9, 09:56 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins was called on the best receivers in the league by head coach Bill O'Brien, and the Texans were willing to part ways with WR Andre Johnson in part because the coaching staff believes Hopkins is ready to be the No. 1 option in the passing game.

Footballguys view: O'Brien may not be too far off with that statement. We love the skill set and upside of Hopkins....too bad the quarterbacks in Houston are among the worst in the league. The lack of quality play at quarterback will hamper Hopkins, the passing game and the entire team in 2015.

Texans | Jaelen Strong signs rookie pact    Fri May 8, 11:13 AM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong signed his rookie four-year contract Friday, May 8.

Footballguys view: We love this addition for the Texans. Strong plays with strength at the point of the catch and natural size to dominate contested catches. He's not a burner, but he's fearless running routes over the middle and has good run-after-the-catch ability. Strong reminds us of a Marques Colston-like prospect with a dash of Alshon Jeffery to his game. He's the perfect wide receiver to start opposite DeAndre Hopkins. However, fantasy owners need to know this entire passing game is likely to suffer because of bad quarterback play.

Texans | Benardrick McKinney signs first deal    Fri May 8, 08:42 AM

Houston Texans LB Benardrick McKinney signed a four-year, $5.3 million deal Friday, May 8. The deal includes $3.2 million guaranteed and a $2.1 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: McKinney is a two-down thumper who arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He can blow up plays in the hole, and McKinney has the ability to scrape and flow to the ball without letting offensive lineman get a hold of him. He's not going to be effective in coverage, but McKinney can be an intimidating force in the middle.

Texans | Kevin Johnson signs rookie deal    Fri May 8, 08:35 AM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson signed his four-year, $10.049 million deal with a $5.5 million signing bonus Friday, May 8.

Footballguys view: Johnson is incredibly gifted athletically, and he can mirror wide receivers all over the field. He has the vision to understand the route as it unfolds, and he has the recovery speed to turn and burst in order to catch a receiver on a deep route. He could step in and contribute right away for the Texans.

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus signed a four-year contract extension worth $26 million Monday, May 4. The deal includes $10.5 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Instead of picking up his fifth-year option, the Texans went ahead and got a long-term deal done with Mercilus. He may not be the pass-rusher many envisioned when he came out of Illinois in 2012, but he's a strong run-defender and obviously a key piece to what Houston does defensively.

The Houston Texans selected Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong in Round 3 (No. 70 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1. The Texans moved up from the No. 82 pick, trading with the New York Jets. The Jets also receive WR DeVier Posey, a fifth-round pick (No. 152 overall) and a seventh-round pick (No. 229 overall).

Footballguys view: That wrist must have really scared teams as a lot of less talented receivers went ahead of Strong. The Jets got a huge haul for the pick, but Houston got a great replacement for Andre Johnson and a weapon across from DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | Benardrick McKinney selected 43rd overall     Fri May 1, 08:08 PM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney was selected 43rd overall by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1.

Footballguys view: The Texans may have determined that they will be running out a defense and no offense next year. Certainly whatever defense they trot out will be incredibly good. McKinney will lock down the middle of the field and improve a run defense which struggled so much last season.
