Texans | J.J. Watt and others placed on PUP list    Mon Jul 25, 04:01 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back), OT Duane Brown (quadriceps), OT Jeff Adams (knee), S Lonnie Ballentine (knee) and CB Cleveland Wallace (undisclosed) were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Watt is the player to highlight here. His status for the start of the regular season is up in the air due to his recent back surgery. Recent reports indicate that Watt could miss the first month of the season.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins drops contract hints    Sat Jul 23, 09:47 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins said he is not looking for a 'certain range' for his next contract but wants to be paid what he is worth. General manager Rick Smith said he is hopeful Hopkins will be around for a long time.

Footballguys view: Hopkins should set the standard for wide receiver pay next year, with Odell Beckham coming up for a new contract in 2018 and likely setting the standard once again. Not that Hopkins needs motivation, but if he looks and produces like he did last year, he'll be the highest paid receiver in the league in 2017.

Texans | Cecil Shorts the best option in slot?    Fri Jul 22, 10:00 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts is likely to open the year as the starting slot receiver, in the opinion of beat writer Tania Ganguli.

Footballguys view: Shorts is best served as a slot receiver in the NFL. We'll see rookie Will Fuller and second-year pro Jaelen Strong compete to be the team's No.2 WR opposite DeAndre Hopkins. With new QB Brock Osweiler, we're excited to see what Hopkins can do. Any other target in this passing game is an unknown, making Shorts, Fuller or Strong all late-round fliers or waiver-wire speed dial guys.

Texans | J.J. Watt could miss first month    Fri Jul 22, 08:03 AM

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) could miss up to 10 weeks after his back operation, which would include the first month of the season, according to a source.

Texans | J.J. Watt could miss Week 1    Thu Jul 21, 10:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt's (back) recent back surgery has a recovery time of six to eight weeks, which would put his return right around Week 1 of the 2016 season.

Footballguys view: It's a touch-and-go situation with Watt. We don't expect to see him at all in the preseason, and we may not know his playing status until the week of practice leading up to the team's first game. Back injuries are tricky to recover from, so the Texans need to be ultra cautious with their superstar here.

Texans | J.J. Watt underwent back surgery    Thu Jul 21, 09:26 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (back) had back surgery recently, and although he is expected to begin camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, he should be OK for the season.

Footballguys view: Back surgery is not something to mess around with. We don't think the Texans will use Watt at all in camp or the preseason as he's got a 6-8 week window for recovery according to some reports. That means the start of the regular season is up in the air for the superstar defender. Stay tuned as we get through August we should learn more about Watt's recovery.

Texans | Devon Still on track to start    Wed Jul 20, 05:13 PM

Houston Texans DE Devon Still is considered the leading candidate to start at defensive end opposite DE J.J. Watt this season.

Footballguys view: With Jared Crick (Broncos) moving on in free agency, the Texans have to find a new starter. Still was out of the league last year, but he's built to stand strong on the defensive line.

Texans | Will Fuller not expected to start    Wed Jul 20, 11:47 AM

Houston Texans WR Will Fuller isn't expected to start in Week 1, but his role should increase as the season progresses, according to beat writer Tania Ganguli.

Footballguys view: The Texans selected Fuller in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft for good reason. He's a player with the speed to get by defenders in the blink of an eye. Fuller can use differing speeds to lull CBs to sleep, then turn on the jets to burn them. He needs to show better concentration at times as Fuller will sometimes try to do too much as he's worried about after the catch before securing the pass. We like his developmental upside for dynasty owners.

Texans | Ra'Zahn Howard looking to drop weight    Fri Jul 15, 08:22 PM

Houston Texans DT Ra'Zahn Howard weighed 325 at his Pro Day but now weighs 317 pounds. He said his goal is to be around 310 pounds once training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Howard went undrafted in the 2016 Supplemental Draft, but the Texans were quick to add him after that. He's a powerful player who did a good job of controlling the point of attack in college for Purdue. Howard struggles to get consistent penetration, but at 325 pounds he can move well laterally and chase down plays that go away from him. He was a starter in college, but he was rotated on and off the field. He should be a rotational player if he makes the Texans 53-man roster.

Texans | Braxton Miller open to anything    Tue Jul 12, 11:07 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller said Tuesday, July 12, in a satellite radio interview that he is open to playing anywhere the team asks. 'Playmaker. I'll play slot, I'll play outside, receiver, running back. Whatever's in the game play,' Miller said.

Footballguys view: Miller only played one year at WR during his college career at Ohio State. The converted QB has crazy athleticism and the ability to score from anywhere on the field. We love his upside as we've only seen the tip of the iceberg in terms of his ability as a receiver.

Texans | Tom Savage ready for camp    Tue Jul 12, 08:12 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage (shoulder) said he is completely recovered from the shoulder injury that cost him the 2015 season and is ready for training camp. Savage is expected to compete with QB Brandon Weeden for the No. 2 quarterback job.

Footballguys view: Savage has always had a rocket arm, but he can't throw it in the ocean standing on the beach. It was no different in college (at multiple stops), and nothing has changed/improved during his pro career. The Texans are hopeful that Brock Osweiler can be the franchise QB some thought Savage could be.

Texans | Braxton Miller may have multiple roles    Mon Jul 4, 01:24 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller may be used in a variety of ways during the 2016 NFL season. He should line up at different spots in the offense and could also be used as a kick returner. Miller could also line up in the Wildcat formation since he was a quarterback in college.

Footballguys view: We love the addition of Miller for the Texans. In fact, they might have had the best draft of any team in the NFL. Miller was impressive in limited duty in his one year as a WR for Ohio State. The converted QB has crazy athleticism, tremendous confidence and the ability to make any defender miss in the open field. He was targeted 40 times last year, caught 26 passes for 341 yards and three TDs. Those numbers don't look like much until you consider this is just the tip of the iceberg with Miller. Re-draft owners need to keep him on waiver-wire speed dial. Dynasty owners should add him and be excited about his developmental upside.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus working with specialist     Fri Jul 1, 12:37 AM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) said he is feeling healthy and will visit with a specialist in early July. He said he plans to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Mercilus was a beast last year for the Texans. He compiled a career-high 11 sacks while also snaring 32 tackles, forcing one fumble (plus recovering it) and defending two passes. This hamstring injury sidelined him for OTAs and minicamp, but Mercilus stuck around the team facility to continue his rehab. The Texans should wisely be cautious with him at the start of camp.

Texans | Ryan Griffin provides versatility    Tue Jun 28, 08:22 PM

Houston Texans TE Ryan Griffin isn't a one-dimensional tight end, according to tight ends coach John Perry. 'He can be effective in the pass game. He can be effective as a blocker,' Perry said. 'You need to bridge that gap like you're a great blocking tight end and a great receiving tight end, to have a bridge guy helps you as an offense to be more effective.'

Footballguys view: During his college career at UCONN, Griffin caught over 100 passes and double-digit touchdowns. A sixth-round pick of the Texans in the 2013 NFL draft, Griffin had a career-high 20 receptions last year. The team could lean on him even more this season. Behind him on the depth chart is big-bodied blocker C.J. Fiedorowicz, so Griffin should be the top pass-catcher at the position. However, his fantasy value is quite low and we can only recommend him as a low-end TE4 in 2016.

Texans | Will Fuller agrees to terms    Sun Jun 26, 10:58 AM

The Houston Texans have agreed to terms with WR Will Fuller on a four-year, $10.2 million contract, according to a source familiar with the terms of the deal. All first-round contracts include a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Fuller will compete with a reshaped Jaelen Strong to be the complement to DeAndre Hopkins outside with Cecil Shorts in the slot. Fuller's deep speed will give him a boom/bust fantasy profile, but if he can start, Hopkins should draw a lot of attention, freeing up Fuller for one-on-one matchups. As long as he can catch the ball consistently and not revert to body catching, Fuller should be an effective field stretcher.

Texans | Stephen Anderson likely to make roster?    Sat Jun 25, 03:58 PM

Houston Texans undrafted rookie free agent TE Stephen Anderson is projected to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Anderson is a new breed H-back/Move TE type whose main contributions will be in the passing game. He might not be active on game days this year if he makes the roster, but he has more fantasy upside than Ryan Griffin or C.J. Fiedorowicz. He's worth a roster spot in TE premium and very deep dynasty leagues.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz has improved    Sat Jun 25, 02:51 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz has made a lot of progress in the passing game this offseason, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. 'He's more instinctive. He knows the plays better. He's a really, really hard worker,' O'Brien said. 'For him, his true improvement and his true playing will come in training camp when you put the full pads on.' Fiedorowicz (hamstring) was injured earlier this offseason, but he has begun running again and should be good to go by training camp.

Footballguys view: The Texans wide receiver corps has been reloaded with Will Fuller in the first round this year and Jaelen Strong in the third round last year, so their tight end spot in a low volume pass offense is less attractive than ever. Ryan Griffin is still the better receiving prospect, but Fiedorowicz is the better two-way tight end, and he should lead the team in tight end snaps if he stays healthy.

Texans | Tyler Ervin should be ready for camp    Mon Jun 20, 07:25 PM

Houston Texans RB Tyler Ervin (quadriceps) missed some time this offseason because of a quadriceps injury but should be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Ervin has incredible speed, quickness and agility. He's able to change direction without losing much speed, and Ervin is a threat to score every time he touches the ball. The rookie is going to compete to be a change-of-pace back behind starter Lamar Miller.

Texans | Cecil Shorts pay cut update    Sat Jun 18, 01:18 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts still has a $15,625 per game active roster bonus up to $250,000. Shorts' $100,000 workout de-escalator was removed from his original deal, however. His new cap figure stands at $2.371 million, down from $3.421 million.

Texans | Kevin Johnson should be ready for camp    Sat Jun 18, 01:02 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) expects to be fully cleared for training camp after undergoing multiple surgeries this offseason. Johnson did not practice this offseason, but he has resume running and doing other individual drills. Johnson said he's feeling great after undergoing foot surgery to repair a Jones fracture, and a separate surgery for a broken wrist.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Johnson can be an impact player on defense. We love the fact that he's not the biggest CB but Johnson is incredibly feisty and does not back down from challenge.

Texans | Cecil Shorts takes pay cut    Sat Jun 18, 12:50 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts has agreed to a $1 million pay cut. He was scheduled to make a base salary of $2.7 million in 2016 but will now receive a $1.2 million base salary and $500,000 roster bonus.

Footballguys view: Shorts likely had to do this to insure his roster spot. The Texans added two WRs in the 2016 NFL draft and they've got second-year pro Jaelen Strong impressing this offseason. Shorts is currently WR2 on the depth chart opposite DeAndre Hopkins, but his hold on that job is tenuous.

Texans | Jaelen Strong a changed man    Thu Jun 16, 01:45 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong made an effort to slim down this offseason and change his diet. He also did a lot of running to drop 30 pounds. He also made a conscious effort to surround himself with better people after he was arrested in the offseason for marijuana. 'I definitely cut a lot of people out,' Strong said. 'A lot of people don't really need to know what's always going on with me. You've got to do what's best for yourself. And right now, I'm in the best shape I could be.' Head coach Bill O'Brien has already called Strong 'one of the most improved players on our football team.'

Footballguys view: Strong disappointed the coaching staff and with Will Fuller and Braxton Miller getting drafted, Strong has to put out his best effort. We still see Fuller and DeAndre Hopkins will get most of the snaps so even if he is doing well Strong isn't likely worth a roster spot this year and his ADP of WR93 tells us that others feel the same way right now.

Texans | Jaelen Strong turning heads    Wed Jun 15, 10:49 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong has been impressive during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp, impressing with seemingly more scoring plays than anyone. He managed three touchdowns on just 14 receptions last season.

Footballguys view: There were rumors around the Draft that Strong had frustrated the coaching staff with his struggles in 2015, so he has a lot to lose, especially after the team took on rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller. Strong has reportedly changed his attitude with regards to dealing with criticism from the coaches as well. We'll see how this plays out, but he's likely no better than the third option behind DeAndre Hopkins and Fuller, and therefore not worth more than a deep roster spot.

Texans | Jaelen Strong praised by coach    Tue Jun 14, 04:33 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong is 'probably one of the most improved players' on the Texans this year, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Strong has always had tremendous upside as a pass-catcher in the NFL. He's lost about 20 pounds this offseason in an effort to be lighter and quicker. Strong plays like a basketball player in the red zone where he's comfortable boxing out defenders and making plays at the highest point. The former Arizona State star will be hooking up with another Sun Devils player as that's where new QB Brock Osweiler went to college (although the two did not play together in college).

Texans | Nick Novak looking to keep job    Mon Jun 13, 06:53 PM

Houston Texans PK Nick Novak will try to hold off PK Ka'imi Fairbairn for the kicker job during the minicamp and training camp. Novak did not miss any kicks from inside 50 yards in 2015, while Fairbairn has a strong leg and would help field positions during kickoffs.

Texans | Kevin Johnson progressing    Sun Jun 12, 01:35 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (wrist, foot) is not yet running, but he is making steady progress in his recovery from offseason foot surgeries. Johnson has added muscle this offseason, too, and said he is trying to get healthy, bigger, stronger and faster.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft, Johnson is one of our favorite young CBs in the league. He started 10 games last year, but Johnson played through a Jones' fracture the final few weeks of the season. Not afraid of a challenge, Johnson is a feisty corner who can play close to the line of scrimmage and get physical with opposing WRs. Having him back and healthy will continue to be a great asset for a strong Texans defense.

Texans | Braxton Miller running sharp routes    Sat Jun 11, 11:27 PM

Houston Texans WR Braxton Miller has been running sharp routes in OTAs, and he has shown the ability to make plays in space.

Footballguys view: It's scary to think what Miller could be in the NFL. He's only a year or so into learning the WR position after spending most of his college career at Ohio State as a QB. Earlier this year at the Senior Bowl, Miller flashed big-time playmaking ability (and an edge as a competitor). Dynasty owners should be all over him, while re-draft owners need to keep him on the waiver-wire speed dial.

Texans | Brock Osweiler a work in progress    Sat Jun 11, 08:06 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler said he still has a 'long way to go' to learn head coach Bill O'Brien's system, but O'Brien said Osweiler has lived up to expectations thus far.

Footballguys view: Osweiler didn't really develop that much during his time with the Broncos, so we're not expecting him to take great strides with the Texans. The team had better be ready for inconsistent QB play, because that's what Osweiler was during the seven games he started for the Broncos in 2015.

Texans | Cecil Shorts admired for toughness     Fri Jun 10, 11:21 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts was praised by WR DeAndre Hopkins for his toughness. 'Even if he's hurt, he's going to go out there,' Hopkins said. 'You'll have to tell him to go on the sideline and get checked out. He's a hard worker.'

Footballguys view: Shorts is in line to play as the Texans second- or third-string WR to begin the season. The Texans have made a ton of moves at the WR position, so his hold on any fantasy-relevant job may be a tenuous one. We could see guys like second-year pro Jaelen Strong or rookies Will Fuller and Braxton Miller get more time/targets behind Hopkins.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus sits out    Fri Jun 10, 03:13 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10.

Texans | C.J. Fiedorowicz remains sidelined    Fri Jun 10, 03:11 PM

Houston Texans TE C.J. Fiedorowicz (hamstring) did not participate in practice Friday, June 10, because of a hamstring injury he suffered last week. Fiedorwicz's injury is not considered serious.

Footballguys view: Fiedorowicz is a big-bodied TE who can be used effectively as a blocker or red-zone threat. He'll compete with Ryan Griffin to be the top TE for the Texans in 2016.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins, Osweiler progressing    Mon Jun 6, 03:41 PM

Houston Texans QB Brock Osweiler and WR DeAndre Hopkins have progressed in their chemistry, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, who said both players are working extremely hard.

Footballguys view: Good thing Osweiler didn't miss one day of OTAs to go with the Broncos to visit President Obama at the White House on Monday....of course we're being sarcastic, as we feel the young QB made a mistake by not going. It's great to build offseason chemistry, but missing one day of practice would not have held them back. Hopkins is QB-proof, so even if (when?) Osweiler struggles we should still see "Nuke" have plenty of fantasy relevance.

Texans | J.J. Watt returns to practice    Mon Jun 6, 02:04 PM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) returned to practice Monday, June 6, after undergoing groin and core surgery this offseason.

Texans | Lamar Miller to be dual threat    Mon Jun 6, 08:16 AM

Houston Texans RB Lamar Miller is slated for a versatile role as an inside and outside runner, and he figures to be a healthy part of the passing game.

Footballguys view: Miller has been a top-10 fantasy RB each of the last two years, but we don't think he's yet played up to his full potential. That's exciting when you consider the role and workload he's likely to have in his first season with the Texans. We won't be surprised if Miller finishes the year as a top-5 fantasy RB and the fantasy community feels that way as well. Miller has a current ADP of RB7 (2.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Texans | Jaelen Strong in better shape    Wed Jun 1, 04:58 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong is down to 197 pounds after weighing in at 230 pounds last season. An improved physique has already improved his game. 'I just said to him today how far he's come,' head coach Bill O'Brien said. 'I was concerned about him from a conditioning standpoint. He really at some point in time before training camp, he came back and passed the conditioning test and really took off after that.'

Footballguys view: Strong looks like a different player according to observers. His offseason arrest might have dropped him off of fantasy radars in dynasty leagues, so this is a good time to buy low if you liked Strong coming out but missed him in last year's rookie drafts. He will vie to start outside and keep first-round pick Will Fuller in a deep target role. Cecil Shorts is likely to line up in the slot.

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) said he feels really good and hopes to return to practice soon.
