Texans | Jadeveon Clowney will sit out preseason    Fri Aug 28, 03:52 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) will not play in either of the final two preseason games but is on track for the start of the regular season, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The Texans need him to be the guy they hoped they were getting when they took him first overall in 2014. This has the potential to be a monster defense though it will take more than JJ Watt to make it happen. They're a lower-end No. 1 team defense.

Texans | Duane Brown won't play Sunday    Fri Aug 28, 12:03 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (hand) will not play Sunday, Aug. 30, against the New Orleans Saints. Brown is not expected to miss any regular season action, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: No shock here. It's more important to have him ready for the season than it is for him to play in a preseason game.

Texans | Duane Brown has injury    Fri Aug 28, 11:33 AM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (hand) has an injured hand but should not need surgery, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The Texans will probably just take it easy with him the rest of the way and avoid having the problem get worse. While he had a rocky start, Brown was really good last season and Pro Football Focus ranked him as the tenth best tackle in the NFL. With a shaky quarterback in Brian Hoyer and a young running back in Alfred Blue, the Texans need the offensive line to be on point. Brown is a huge part of that.

Texans | Ryan Mallett slept in    Thu Aug 27, 07:52 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett missed practice Thursday, Aug. 27, because he overslept. Mallett was present for meetings later on, however. He will also be at practice Friday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: We understand it. Madden 16 came out earlier this week (and Gears of War Ultimate Edition), so some late-night gaming might have been in order. Brian Hoyer has already been named the starter in Houston, and that gamer Mallett is the backup.

Texans | Ryan Mallett not at practice    Thu Aug 27, 04:07 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett (personal) was not at practice Thursday, Aug. 27, due to a personal issue, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Could it be that he's upset he got 'Hoyer'd' when Brian Hoyer was named the starter? He certainly seemed upset by the decision, and frankly we were baffled as well. It's easy to read into things without many facts--after all, Mallett was at Wednesday's practice after he lost the job and O'Brien hints he'll be back Friday. Still it's an intriguing idea that he was so upset he walked off. We'll be waiting to see what Hard Knocks has to say about it. We would avoid this quarterback situation if at all possible. Hoyer is aggressively mediocre, and no better than a QB3. Right now Mallett isn't even that though at least he has the upside of the unknown. This isn't a great situation though and Fantasy GMs are best looking elsewhere.

Texans | Arian Foster could return Week 2    Thu Aug 27, 02:13 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) has been working out in Houston, and he's expected to return to the field in some facet by Week 2 to Week 4, according to ESPN 97.5 in Houston's Jayson Braddock.

Footballguys view: Great news for fantasy owners of Foster, but not so wonderful for those who have Alfred Blue. We've seen Blue getting drafted in the sixth round of drafts, while Foster is going just one round earlier. That could actually make Foster a bit of a value as when healthy he's at least a solid RB2.

Texans | Benardrick McKinney has sprained MCL    Wed Aug 26, 08:12 PM

Houston Texans LB Benardrick McKinney (knee) has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: McKinney is a player who can cover the field from sideline-to-sideline. He is projected to miss a short period of time and the injury is expected to heal on its own, with a combination of rest and rehabilitation.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney won't play in preseason game    Wed Aug 26, 01:52 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) will not play in the team's third preseason game against the New Orleans Saints Sunday, Aug. 30, as the team continues to follow a medical plan for their linebacker. Houston is likely to ease Clowney in the rotation with LBs Whitney Mercilus and John Simon. 'I'm rusty,' Clowney said. 'I'm just trying to get as many reps as I can. Tell coach to put me in as much as possible. They're not trying to rush me back. Working me in slowly. I'll still be trying to get as many reps as I can so I can get ready for the game.'

Footballguys view: Clowney may never be the same again after this injury. The Texans are going to be incredibly cautious with him as they ease Clowney back into action.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney on track for Week 1    Mon Aug 24, 06:25 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) may not play in the preseason but appears to be on track to play Week 1.

Footballguys view: Head coach Bill O'Brien said the team is following the plan for Clowney that the medical staff created. We expect Clowney to be on some sort of snap count as he returns from this serious knee injury.

Texans | No timetable for Arian Foster    Mon Aug 24, 03:10 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) is recovering his groin surgery and there is no timetable for his return at this time, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: If all goes well, Foster may only miss about a month of the regular season. In order to make that timetable, he cannot have any setbacks during his recovery.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney to miss preseason game    Mon Aug 24, 02:45 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) has been ruled out for the third preseason game.

Footballguys view: Clowney has been brought back slowly from his microfracture knee injury. He might be available for the team's Week 1 regular season game, but expect him to be on a snap count whenever he comes back.

Texans | Brian Hoyer named starter    Mon Aug 24, 09:16 AM

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer was named the starting quarterback for the 2015 season.

Footballguys view: Awesome. Fantasy owners still aren't locked into this quarterback situation in Houston. This news isn't shocking given Ryan Mallett's play and skill set. If Hoyer struggles, the team could turn to Mallett or second-year pro Tom Savage. No matter how things unfold, this isn't a fantasy-relevant situation.

Texans | Houston not ready to name starting QB    Fri Aug 21, 04:19 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett have need competing for the starting quarterback job, but head coach Bill O'Brien wants to see them play more before making a decision. 'I need to see a little bit more and I want to give Ryan a chance to start a game, and put some more thought into it. Then make a decision at some point whether it's next week or the week after. At some point, we'll make a decision,' O'Brien said.

Footballguys view: Both quarterbacks (and even Tom Savage) looked good against the 49ers in Week 1 of the preseason, which might be more about the state of the San Francisco defense than the state of the Houston quarterback situation. This pass offense could power DeAndre Hopkins to near WR1 numbers, but that's only because he's a high wattage bulb.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney improving    Thu Aug 20, 07:27 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) continues to increase his activities in training camp practices after being activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, although his mobility isn't the same as it was before his injury. Clowney was able to plant his feet and change directions Thursday, Aug. 20, and he's looking more confident in his return. He's made significant progress from his rehab from knee problems that limited him in his rookie season.

Footballguys view: The Texans need Clowney for this defense to repeat last season's success. Last season was all J.J. Watt--and an unreal season. Clowney needs to live up to that first-overall pick the Texans spent on him in the 2014 NFL draft.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney activated    Thu Aug 20, 04:10 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) has been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Clowney has increased his activity since he began practicing again earlier this week.

Footballguys view: With the quarterback situation still about as unsettled as ever, the Texans are looking for something more from the guy they took instead of Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater or Johnny Manziel. Clowney played in just four games last season and never got into a rhythm. The defense will always go through JJ Watt, but the Texans feel the way to upend the Colts in the division is to beat Andrew Luck and they need Clowney to make that a reality. If he can step up and stay healthy, this defense could be one of the best in the NFL and in fantasy.

Texans | Mike McFarland waived    Wed Aug 19, 07:34 PM

Houston Texans TE Mike McFarland (undisclosed) was waived with an injured designation Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Texans | HOU QB announcement still not set    Mon Aug 17, 04:58 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett still don't know who will start this season. Head coach Bill O'Brien said he doesn't know when a starter will be named. Hoyer started the Texans' first preseason game, but O'Brien said Mallett would start the second preseason game.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are not on the edge of their seat waiting for this decision. Hoyer has the experience advantage, but Mallett has the stronger arm. The whole situation is a mess and will hold down the numbers of the passing game.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney feels good    Mon Aug 17, 01:07 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) said he feels pretty good after he participated in practice on a limited basis Monday, Aug. 17. He did not wear a brace on his surgically repaired knee and did not have any soreness in the knee. Clowney will be limited to individual work until the doctors and coaches believe he is ready for more.

Texans | Ryan Mallett to start vs. Denver    Sun Aug 16, 10:57 AM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Mallett will be the starting quarterback for the second preseason game against the Denver Broncos Saturday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: Both Mallett and Hoyer performed well in the preseason opener, and second-year QB Tom Savage wasn't bad either. This battle is still wide open and so far the news is positive for the team's offense.

Texans | Cecil Shorts dazzles    Sun Aug 16, 09:18 AM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts took a Brian Hoyer pass 58 yards to the end zone Saturday, Aug. 15, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Shorts looked good and he has been winning in the slot consistent according to Texans insider Lance Zierlein. He could have bye/emergency/injury bench wide receiver value if he stays healthy this year. Staying healthy is not Shorts' strong suit, so he's more of a waiver wire watch list player than a late draft target.

Texans | Brian Hoyer expected to start    Sat Aug 15, 06:59 PM

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer is expected to start Saturday, Aug. 15, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are not dialed in here--nor should they be. The Texans have one of the worst QB situations in the league (and there's no savior on the roster). Hoyer has the experience advantage over Ryan Mallett, but he's no lock to win the starting job. If (when?) Hoyer and Mallett don't work out, the team may turn to second-year pro Tom Savage. He's got a rocket arm, but he struggles to throw it in the ocean standing on the beach. The Texans aren't a team we're plucking talent from for our fantasy rosters. Even a remarkable talent like DeAndre Hopkins will be set back by the lack of quality quarterback play.

Texans | Xavier Su'a-Filo out Saturday    Sat Aug 15, 06:12 PM

Houston Texans OG Xavier Su'a-Filo (foot, ankle) has been ruled out Saturday, Aug. 15, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: The injury is not considered to be long term, and he could return to some activity as soon as next week.

Texans | Ray Rice may not be option for Houston    Thu Aug 13, 01:30 PM

Free-agent RB Ray Rice (Ravens) may not be an option for the Houston Texans because owner Bob McNair said he does not know if Rice is better than the running backs currently on the roster. McNair said he would talk with the players before he would consider pursing Rice.

Footballguys view: Rice is looking for a new job, but no teams outside of Houston and Cleveland have shown much interest. The Texans are scrambling at running back since Arian Foster went down. Alfred Blue should take over as the lead back, but guys like Chris Polk and undrafted rookie Kenny Hilliard are worth monitoring over the preseason.

Texans | Houston offered Pierre Thomas minimum    Thu Aug 13, 09:26 AM

Free-agent RB Pierre Thomas (Saints) turned down a one-year, $870,000 offer from the Houston Texans last week, according to sources. The two sides could revisit talks.

Footballguys view: This is consistent with the Texans not being worried about Arian Foster missing the year, or even most of the year. If they are lowballing Thomas, that means they expect Foster to be back, or perhaps they really like Alfred Blue and Chris Polk. More injuries will happen at RB this month, and Thomas should eventually get more money from someone.

Texans | Garrett Graham impressing    Wed Aug 12, 03:52 PM

Houston Texans TE Garrett Graham has dominated linebackers, and coverage in general, this offseason. He has specifically impressed with his ability to get open.

Footballguys view: We'd be more excited about Graham if his quarterback situation wasn't so bad. Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett don't inspire thoughts of greatness, and Tom Savage is so raw he can't beat out either one of the guys ahead of him.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney will not be rushed back    Wed Aug 12, 12:33 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee) could return to practice by Monday, Aug. 17, but head coach Bill O'Brien said the team will not rush him back if he is not ready to practice.

Footballguys view: That's the smart move. Clowney was the first-overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, but he failed to make much of an impact as a rookie because of this knee injury.

Texans | Two QBs listed as starter for Texans    Tue Aug 11, 06:37 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are both listed as the starting quarterback on the Texans' depth chart.

Footballguys view: Way to take a stand there Bill O'Brien. Hoyer and Mallett could be the worst QB combination in the league (along with Buffalo's situation), and Tom Savage isn't the answer either. Fantasy owners are wisely avoiding these quarterbacks, and their poor upside will also hold down the numbers for DeAndre Hopkins.

Texans | More on Arian Foster's surgery    Sat Aug 8, 05:58 PM

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) may only miss four to six weeks of the regular season, according to sources with knowledge of the situation not authorized to speak publicly. He was slated to miss two to three months of the season for surgery to reattach the groin to the bone, but the Houston Chronicle suggests he underwent a type of sports hernia surgery. 'Dr. Meyers performs a Bassini-type hernia repair that he has performed on hundreds of professional athletes who have suffered a sports hernia,' said Dr. Bert Mandelbaum, an orthopedic surgeon at Santa Monica Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Group in California who does not treat Foster. 'We published an article together in the '90s regarding its effectiveness. Foster should be back to full form in two to three months depending on the details and spectrum of his injury.'

Footballguys view: The news about Foster's recovery is moving in a positive direction. Originally thought to be a 3-6 month recovery, now the optimism is growing that Foster is much closer to a return. Even with this news/speculation, Foster is still a candidate to begin the season on the I.R./Designated to Return List.

Texans | Chris Polk returns to practice    Sat Aug 8, 10:43 AM

Houston Texans RB Chris Polk (hamstring) is participating in practice Saturday, Aug. 8, after missing some time because of a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: You can't make the club in the tub, but Polk's outlook is already getting corrected back to waiver wire speed dial with Arian Foster's injury seeming not as bad even if Polk is healthy from here on out in camp.

Link to story

Texans | Arian Foster may return sooner?    Sat Aug 8, 10:27 AM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) may miss only four to six weeks of playing time instead of the two to three months that was originally mentioned as his recovery time, according to sources. Foster may start the season on the short-term Injured Reserve list, which would keep out for at least the first eight weeks of the season.

Footballguys view: This jives with what we're hearing. The worst case scenarios seem to be out of play. Right now Foster is worth a look in the fourth or fifth round as a true boom/bust player. This could be a precursor to a frustrating season for Foster, but if he on the field, we'll project him as a top 5-8 back for the week unless he's a game-time decision.

Texans | Arian Foster will go on IR    Fri Aug 7, 06:18 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin), who had successful groin surgery Friday, Aug. 7, will be placed on the short-term Reserve/Injured list, meaning he'll be eligible to return in Week 8.

Footballguys view: Alfred Blue went from a round fifteen option to a round nine option and could rise further as the season approaches. We see him as an OK low-end RB3 but he could get an awful lot of work given the shaky nature of the quarterbacks in Houston.

Link to story

Texans | Arian Foster back in three months?    Fri Aug 7, 12:48 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) had surgery to fix a groin muscle that was torn off the bone Friday, Aug. 7, according to a source. A timetable on when he might return is unclear, but Houston is hoping Foster's recovery time will be shorter than three months, however. He will miss at least a few regular season games, and it's possible that he is placed on the short-term Reserve/Injured list. The earliest the Texans can put him on IR is Sept. 6.

Footballguys view: We have to proceed as if Foster will miss 6-8 games at a minimum, with no assurance that he won't miss more or be himself when he does return. It's difficult to value him right now, but the news and Foster's history of injuries makes it easier to err on the side of not drafting him before the 9th/10th round right now. If we knew Foster was going to be fully healthy by Week 7 or 8, he would obviously be worth more than that.

Texans | Alfred Blue is next man up     Wed Aug 5, 07:36 PM

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue is expected to take over the first-team duties with RB Arian Foster (groin) expected to miss some time in the regular season. RBs Jonathan Grimes and Chris Polk could also see more action in the backfield with Foster injured.

Footballguys view: Blue is a player who has earned the respect of those around (and on) the team. He's a bruising back, and reports indicate that he's improved his ability to play on third downs. We'll see if he can be the feature back, or if the team will try to use some form of RBBC while Foster is out.

Updating previous reports, Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, Aug. 7, to reattach his groin muscle to the bone.

Footballguys view: The Texans will likely place Foster on the I.R./Designated to Return List. This means he'll be out of action until Week 10. In the meantime, watch for Alfred Blue and Chris Polk to battle it out for the starting job.

Texans | Pierre Thomas will not join Houston    Wed Aug 5, 12:40 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent RB Pierre Thomas (Saints) was unable to reach an agreement with the Houston Texans after his visit with the team Wednesday, Aug. 5, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: This sounds like a money issue. The Texans would likely offer Thomas the veteran minimum, and he may feel like he's worth more. Stay tuned.

Texans | No favorite for Houston QB job    Wed Aug 5, 12:23 PM

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett remain in a close competition for the starting quarterback job, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. O'Brien said he believes both quarterbacks could start for the team.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't have a favorite either if the chose was Hoyer or Mallett...that's like the choice between airline food and hospital food. Both will get the job done, but you're not excited about either one. Fantasy owners are wisely avoiding this situation.

Texans | HOU discusses BenJarvus Green-Ellis    Wed Aug 5, 12:50 AM

The Houston Texans have discussed free-agent RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (Bengals) internally, as the staff is familiar with him from head coach Bill O'Brien's time with the New England Patriots. Green-Ellis is healthy and ready.

Footballguys view: Green-Ellis certainly isn't a dynamic back (never has been), but he's strong, determined and efficient as a runner. We'll see if he gets the call from Houston.

Texans | Jeff Demps a target for Houston?    Wed Aug 5, 12:49 AM

Texans | Ben Malena to try out for Texans    Wed Aug 5, 12:48 AM

Free-agent RB Ben Malena (Cowboys) is expected to try out for the Houston Texans this week.

Footballguys view: Expect every free agent running back to try and find a way to Houston with Arian Foster (groin) banged up. A former Texas A&M back, Malena is quicker than fast and good at changing direction in the open field. He's not a starter, but perhaps could stick as a part-time back.

Texans | Pierre Thomas to workout Wednesday    Tue Aug 4, 06:49 PM

Free-agent RB Pierre Thomas (Saints) is on his way to visit the Houston Texans Tuesday, Aug. 4, and he is expected to workout for the team Wednesday.

Footballguys view: The Texans are going to be looking long and hard at free agent backs as Arian Foster (groin) is likely to miss a large chunk of the regular season. Thomas can still be a good all-purpose back and give them quality veteran depth behind Alfred Blue.

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) may begin the regular season on the short-term Reserve/Injured list. Foster suffered a groin injury Tuesday, Aug. 4, that will likely require surgery.

Houston Texans RB Chris Polk (hamstring) is dealing with a minor hamstring injury, according to a source.

Texans | Alfred Blue carted off    Tue Aug 4, 02:27 PM

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue (cramps) was carted off the field Tuesday, Aug. 4 with leg cramps, but he is supposedly fine. Blue received the repetitions that RB Arian Foster (groin) would have received.

Footballguys view: With Foster banged up, the team will turn to Blue so long as he's not cramped up. Behind Foster and Blue, we like the upside of rookie Kenny Hilliard. It sounds like Blue is going to be okay, and he would carry the bulk of the offense if Foster is out.

Texans | Arian Foster may need surgery    Tue Aug 4, 02:06 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (groin) may need surgery on his injured groin.

Footballguys view: Reports coming out of Houston are speculating that Foster could be a candidate for the I.R./Designated To Return List. That would get him back on the field in Week 10 for the Texans. Foster missed two games last year due to a groin injury, and now he's banged up again for the same reason. Alfred Blue is the lead back for the team while Foster is out.
