Texans | Deshaun Watson ahead of schedule    Tue May 22, 02:54 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) has made significant progress in his rehabilitation from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and is considered ahead of schedule.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Texans here. Watson flashed big-time playmaking ability as a dual-threat quarterback with 19 touchdown passes in his first six starts. Fantasy owners are licking their chops for Watson's potential in 2018. His current ADP is QB2 (3.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (knee), DE J.J. Watt (leg), RB D'Onta Foreman (Achilles') and DE Joel Heath (knee) did not participate in organized team activities Tuesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: Foreman is going to push Lamar Miller for the starting job...eventually. Right now, he's still recovering from his Achilles' injury. The team remains hopeful he will be cleared in time for training camp.

Texans | Deshaun Watson on track for camp    Tue May 15, 03:59 AM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson (knee) is 'on schedule to participate in training camp,' according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Knee injuries just aren't as devastating as they used to be. Watson tore his ACL in early November, and there was some speculation that he might be able to do something in OTAs this spring. He should be on track for training camp, but his level of participation has yet to be determined. We imagine the Texans will ease him into action upon his return.

Texans | Houston claims Stephen Morris    Mon May 14, 04:21 PM

The Houston Texans claimed QB Stephen Morris off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks Monday, May 14, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Morris is mechanically sound and athletic, but he's not an accurate passer and has bounced around the league. He's just a camp arm for the Texans.

Texans | Tyrann Mathieu will be used as safety    Mon May 14, 03:39 PM

Houston Texans FS Tyrann Mathieu will only be used at safety, and the team wants Mathieu to concentrate on becoming a leader of the secondary.

Texans | Jordan Thomas working on blocking    Sat May 12, 10:16 PM

Houston Texans TE Jordan Thomas has been focusing on refining his blocking techniques during rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a 280 pound converted wide receiver, and blocking is not his hallmark. He is a receiving threat and can create mismatches against linebackers due to his skill set. The Texans have Ryan Griffin and Stephen Anderson at the top of the depth chart, but Thomas could compete for a spot in the rotation if he proves himself in camp.

Texans | Houston high on Vyncint Smith    Sat May 12, 10:06 PM

Houston Texans WR Vyncint Smith was a 'priority free agent' following the 2018 NFL Draft, according to head coach Bill O'Brien, and O'Brien believes Smith could help on special teams and contribute as a receiver.

Footballguys view: Smith could eventually be stashed on the practice squad, but there's a chance he lands on the 53-man roster as the coaching staff seems very high on his ability. He's got the size, speed, and playmaking instincts to translate from the small school level (Limestone College) of play with some development time.

Texans | Houston signs three more picks    Fri May 11, 07:10 PM

Houston Texans sixth-round draft choice TE Jordan M. Thomas and seventh-round draft choices LB Peter Kalambayi and CB Jermaine Kelly signed four-year contracts Friday, May 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a big-bodied (280 pounds) target who used to be a wide receiver. He's still raw at the position and needs work as a blocker. However, his size alone could make him a decent red zone option for the Texans.

Houston Texans third-round draft choice S Justin Reid signed a four-year contract with the Texans Thursday, May 10, worth $4.063 million, according to a source. The deal includes a $1.039 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Reid is versatile and has the skills to be a ballhawking safety. He's on a very talented unit, so he is unlikely to have a significant role early on.

Texans | J.J. Watt feeling good    Tue May 8, 09:51 AM

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (knee) said he's walking without a brace, playing golf and feeling good.

Footballguys view: Watt has only played nine games over the last two years as back problems slowed him in 2016 and the knee injury he's still recovering from was suffered in October of 2017. We've heard Watt's recovery is going well, and Watt himself has constantly stated how good he feels this offseason. Barring setbacks, we should see him near full strength for training camp.

Texans | Houston hopeful for D'Onta Foreman    Mon May 7, 08:08 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (Achilles') is 'still going through the recovery phase from his injury last year,' according to general manager Brian Gaine, but the team remains hopeful he will be cleared in time for training camp.

Footballguys view: Foreman is returning from the Achilles' injury, but his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Lamar Miller can lead the way for the Texans on the ground, and they re-signed Alfred Blue to give them a decent backup while Foreman continues to recover. When Foreman is healthy, he could be the lead back for the Texans and relegate Miller to a backup role.

Texans | Stephen Anderson may be on bubble    Mon May 7, 03:51 PM

Houston Texans TE Stephen Anderson is expected to compete with TE Jordan M. Thomas for a spot on the roster during training camp because the Texans likely will only keep three tight ends on the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a converted wide receiver and moves well for a big man at 265 pounds. He's got the ability to create mismatches as a pass catcher but needs to work on his technique and 'want to' as a blocker.

Texans | Alfred Blue contract update    Mon Apr 30, 04:59 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue's one-year contract is worth $880,000.

Footballguys view: The Texans didn't get a back in the 2018 NFL draft (a deep and talented class), so they decided to bring back Blue. He'll serve as the third-string back behind Lamar Miller and D'Onta Foreman (when healthy).

Texans | Kevin Johnson's optioned picked up    Mon Apr 30, 01:45 PM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson's fifth-year option was exercised Monday, April 30.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick for the Texans back in 2015, Johnson has not played a full 16-game season since his rookie year. The option is guaranteed for injury only, so the Texans are taking a risk for a player who has missed 14 games over the last two years combined.

Texans | Alfred Blue re-signs with Texans    Mon Apr 30, 10:51 AM

Free-agent RB Alfred Blue (Texans) signed a one-year deal with the Houston Texans Monday, April 30. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: D'Onta Foreman may not be ready for the start of the regular season as he continues to recover from an Achilles' injury. The Texans still have Lamar Miller and Blue should get in the mix, especially if there's a setback in Foreman's recovery.

Texans | Keke Coutee could contribute right away    Sun Apr 29, 07:16 PM

Houston Texans WR Keke Coutee is expected to compete with WR Braxton Miller for the slot receiver job during training camp. He is also expected to be used as a kick returner.

Footballguys view: Coutee has much better deep speed than Miller and he can provide a better threat to take the kickoff the distance. When he's on the field at the same time as Will Fuller, safeties will have trouble guarding the deep zone.

Texans | Jimmy Raye let go    Sun Apr 29, 06:03 PM

Houston Texans assistant general manager Jimmy Raye III was fired Sunday, April 29.

Footballguys view: The purge of former GM's Rick Smith staff will give new GM Brian Gaine the ability to build his own staff. The Texans didn't have their first and second round picks in Gaine's first draft, but they still added speed on offense and an excellent, versatile safety in Justin Reid.

Texans | Houston to sign Vyncint Smith    Sun Apr 29, 12:33 AM

Undrafted free-agent WR Vyncint Smith (Limestone) reportedly agreed to terms with the Houston Texans Saturday, April 28, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Smith is exactly the kind of receiver teams should be looking to stash on the practice squad. He's got the size, speed, and playmaking instincts to translate from the small school level of play with some development time.

Texans | Jester Weah joining Houston    Sat Apr 28, 08:31 PM

Undrafted free-agent WR Jester Weah (Pittsburgh) reportedly agreed to terms with the Houston Texans Saturday, April 28. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Weah has NFL size, speed, strength, and ball skills, but a deep wide receiver class and inconsistency put him on the outside looking in. Weah will have to beat out Bruce Ellington who might be expendable with Keke Coutee drafted this weekend, or hope the Texans carry six wide receivers. He's a strong practice squad candidate.

Texans | Jordan Thomas going to Houston    Sat Apr 28, 05:17 PM

The Houston Texans selected Mississippi State TE Jordan M. Thomas with the 211th overall pick (Round 6) in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Thomas has rare size and speed, and is very athletic but as a football player, leaves a lot to be desired. He had very little production in college, doesn't release cleanly from the line and his routes are bad. This is an upside project with a Gran Canyon deep downside.

Texans | Keke Coutee selected by Houston    Sat Apr 28, 12:19 PM

The Houston Texans selected Texas Tech WR Keke Coutee with the 103rd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Saturday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Texans add another weapon for DeShaun Watson. Coutee is a speedy player who can work out of the slot and will likely also help out on kick returns.

Texans | Jordan Akins to have a role on offense    Fri Apr 27, 11:08 PM

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said he is excited about what TE Jordan Akins can do in the passing game.

Footballguys view: He needs someone to help out when DeAndre Hopkins is covered and hasn't quite found the answer yet, especially at tight end.

Texans | Jordan Akins goes to Houston    Fri Apr 27, 10:36 PM

The Houston Texans picked UCF TE Jordan Akins with the 98th overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Akins flashes the speed to challenge man coverage and the size to be a pain to cover, and can gain yards after the catch. He's a solid move tight end, but doesn't block much and his age (26) is a concern.

Texans | Justin Reid lands in Houston    Fri Apr 27, 09:29 PM

The Houston Texans selected Stanford FS Justin Reid with the 68th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: A smart and instinctive safety, Reid has some improving to do, but should have a role early on for the Texans defense.

Texans | D'Onta Foreman not a lock for Week 1    Sat Apr 21, 10:55 PM

Houston Texans RB D'Onta Foreman (Achilles') may have to begin the season on the Reserve/Physically Unable to Perform list, according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Footballguys view: Keep this in mind when considering Foreman as a late-round prospect. He's got the upside to take over for Lamar Miller in the backfield. Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, but Foreman needs all the athleticism he can bring to the field. He may not be the same player immediately upon his return. With such a great class of RBs in the 2018 NFL draft, the Texans would be foolish not to select at least one.

Texans | Whitney Mercilus at full strength    Sat Apr 21, 10:28 PM

Houston Texans LB Whitney Mercilus (pectoral) is fully recovered from his torn pectoral muscle.

Footballguys view: More great news for the Texans here. Their defense should have the dominant look they had in 2016 with a healthy Mercilus and J.J. Watt on the field. Mercilus should be full go for OTAs and minicamp.

Houston Texans general manager Brian Gaine does not plan to negotiate contract extensions with players during the regular season, as was the case with his predecessor, Rick Smith.

Texans | Houston works out Mark Andrews    Wed Apr 18, 07:11 PM

Oklahoma TE Mark Andrews recently participated in a private workout with Houston Texans, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Andrews is arguably the best tight end in the 2018 NFL draft, and we should see him as a first-round pick. A former wide receiver, Andrews brings that game to the tight end position. He can create mismatches no matter where he lines up on the field due to his size/speed combination.

Texans | Houston takes a look at J'Mon Moore    Tue Apr 17, 10:42 PM

University of Missouri WR J'Mon Moore visited with the Houston Texans on Tuesday, April 17.

Footballguys view: At 6'3" 204 pounds, Moore is one of the most interesting size/speed prospects at the WR position. He can out-muscle smaller defenders for the ball and does a good job of presenting the largest possible target to his quarterback. Moore is raw as a route-runner and needs to show that he can run the full tree in the pros. He should be a fourth-round pick.
