Texans | Quarterbacks of interest to Texans     Thu Feb 11, 05:28 PM

Updating a previous report, North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz and Memphis QB Paxton Lynch are among the quarterbacks the Houston Texans are interested in leading up to the NFL Draft. Michigan State QB Connor Cook and Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg are other possibilities.

Footballguys view: Making the playoffs has resulted in hurting the Texans chances of getting a top quarterback in the NFL draft. It doesn't make it impossible of course, however they're not in the best of positions. One of the above quarterbacks should be there for them, but will he be the right guy? The Texans could also attempt to trade up and grab the guy they want. Whatever the case they are desperate for a legitimate starter under center.

Texans | Houston to run more in 2016?    Thu Feb 11, 04:55 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster may be utilized more next season after team owner Bob McNair said the Texans need to get the running game going again.

Footballguys view: This is a reversal from the rumors during the playoffs that Foster was on the outs in Houston. Of course, this could be an effort on the part of the front office to drum up trade value before they cut him. Foster has been too banged up so despite his obvious talent, we're not as excited as we used to be for his fantasy value. A different venue would of course change that as well.

Texans | Duane Brown recovering well    Thu Feb 11, 04:26 PM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) is coming along well in his rehabilitation process. Brown is recovering from season-ending surgery for a quadriceps injury he suffered in the final game of the season. Brown is wearing a leg brace but he is off crutches and the injury is healing well.

Texans | Arian Foster cleared to jog    Tue Feb 2, 10:19 AM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (Achilles') has been cleared to jog without pivoting, cutting or explosive activity.

Footballguys view: Foster is still facing a lengthy recovery from this major injury. While Achilles' injuries aren't as devastating as they used to be, it's still something to be cautious with during a return--especially for an older back like Foster.

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins receives praise    Mon Feb 1, 01:25 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins, who had three catches for 71 yards and a touchdown in the Pro Bowl, received praise from former WR Michael Irvin. 'We don't know what the ceiling is,' Irvin said. 'You see the skillset, where he can catch footballs from anyplace in the world. There is no telling what the ceiling can be. He'll be rewriting a lot of records in the NFL.' Hopkins had 111 catches for 1,521 yards and a franchise-record 11 touchdowns in 2015. Hopkins caught a touchdown from four different quarterbacks this year, which is an NFL record.

Footballguys view: They just need to get him a quarterback in Houston, and Hopkins can be more dangerous than ever before. We'll see if the team can find a signal-caller through the draft or free agency.

Texans | Arian Foster working to return    Thu Jan 28, 11:57 PM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (Achilles') has been in the team's facilities working hard on his rehab, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Foster is known as a hard-worker, so it's no surprise to learn that he's working hard to come back. He's got a $6.5 million cap hit in 2016, and Foster is set to hit free agency in 2017. There's a chance the Texans decide to let the veteran go due to his price tag. If Foster is on the open market, we feel a team like the Broncos would make a move to add him.

Texans | No surgery for Jadeveon Clowney    Wed Jan 27, 05:08 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) is feeling better and will not need surgery this offseason on his injured foot, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: The first-overall pick of the 2014 NFL draft, Clowney has played in only about half of the possible games. We've seen some flashes from the naturally gifted pass-rusher, but he needs to stay healthy in order to play up to his enormous potential.

Texans | Kevin Johnson undergoes surgery    Sat Jan 23, 11:03 AM

Houston Texans CB Kevin Johnson (foot, wrist) recently underwent surgery to repair a stress fracture in his foot.

Footballguys view: We liked what the rookie showed this season. Johnson is also expected to undergo surgery in two to three weeks to repair a broken wrist.

Texans | Arian Foster likely to be released    Thu Jan 14, 10:36 AM

Houston Texans RB Arian Foster (Achilles') is expected to be released before the new league year begins in March, according to multiple sources not authorized to speak publicly. Foster, 30, would have a cap hit of $8.925 million for the 2016 season. The sources also said they expect him to sign elsewhere.

Footballguys view: At 30, coming off a big injury and with a large cap hit, it's not a shock. There could be a few teams willing to take a shot with him next year if he can stay healthy.

Texans | Bill O'Brien, GM safe    Wed Jan 13, 12:29 PM

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien and general manager Rick Smith will work with each other for a third straight year in 2016, according to owner Bob McNair. 'I see no reason they (Smith and O'Brien) can't (work together). They've been working together. They're bright, and they're independent and they express their opinions,' McNair said.

Footballguys view: After making a playoff run in 2015, it's no surprise that O'Brien and Smith would stick around. Now that they've made a bit of progress, they'll have to continue to take steps forward in 2016.

Texans | Three signed to Reserve/Futures contracts    Mon Jan 11, 05:40 PM

Houston Texans RB Kenny Hilliard, WR Josh Lenz and TE Eric Tomlinson signed Reserve/Futures contracts Monday, Jan. 11.

Footballguys view: We like Hilliard in super-deep dynasty leagues. Another one in a long line of LSU RBs (Stevan Ridley, Jeremy Hill, Spencer Ware), Hilliard is an instinctive runner who can create his own space. He's tough to bring down when he gets a head of steam, and Hilliard could produce if given the opportunity.

Texans | Tom Savage wants chance at starting job    Mon Jan 11, 01:38 PM

Houston Texans QB Tom Savage said he wants a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job during the offseason workouts. Savage missed the 2015 season because of a shoulder injury but was able to warm up before some of the regular season games.

Footballguys view: Savage has a rocket arm, but he's got little control as to where those passes go. The Texans should be in the market for another quarterback instead of wasting time with guys like Savage.

Texans | Brandon Weeden open to Houston return    Sat Jan 9, 10:19 PM

Houston Texans QB Brandon Weeden said he would 'absolutely' like to return to the team next season.

Footballguys view: We're surprised Brian Hoyer stayed in the game as long as he did. Weeden is not a great quarterback, but clearly Hoyer was off his game and needed to be replaced.

Texans | Alfred Blue solid in loss    Sat Jan 9, 08:30 PM

Texans | Brian Hoyer commits five turnovers    Sat Jan 9, 08:23 PM

Houston Texans QB Brian Hoyer completed 15 of 34 passes for 136 yards and four interceptions and lost a fumble in a 30-0 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round of the playoffs Saturday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: We're surprised Texans head coach Bill O'Brien didn't pull Hoyer after just a few turnovers. Hoyer looked uncomfortable all game long, and perhaps Brandon Weeden could have provided a bit of a spark (or at least not turned the ball over as much).

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney not close to playing    Sat Jan 9, 08:16 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) was not able to push off his foot or run and was not close to playing in the wild-card game against the Kansas City Chiefs, head coach Bill O'Brien said Saturday, Jan. 9.

Houston Texans DE J.J. Watt (groin) said the groin injury he suffered in the AFC wild-card game against the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, Jan. 9, was 'extremely painful.'

Footballguys view: Watt was clearly not himself as the Texans defense struggled. They'll get to regroup now that the Chiefs knocked them out of the playoffs.

Texans | J.J. Watt exits briefly    Sat Jan 9, 06:32 PM

Texans | DeAndre Hopkins could burn Chiefs    Fri Jan 8, 10:14 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins faces the Kansas City Chiefs in the wild-card round of the playoffs Saturday, Jan. 9, and the Chiefs are allowing the second-most yards per game to opposing No. 1 receivers this season.

Footballguys view: DFS players should be paying up to get Hopkins on the field. Watching Hopkins going up against Chiefs CB Marcus Peters is going to be a treat on Saturday.

Texans | Full practice for three Texans     Thu Jan 7, 04:24 PM

Houston Texans WRs DeAndre Hopkins (hand) and Cecil Shorts (hamstring) and RB Chris Polk (knee) were full participants in practice Thursday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: Hopkins will be a solid WR1 play this weekend and could be well worth the price in daily fantasy. Shorts is a so-so play though he has more upside than fellow Texans Nate Washington. Polk isn't worth a play, especially with a knee issue.

Texans | Two Texans limited Thursday    Thu Jan 7, 04:17 PM

Houston Texans RB Alfred Blue (calf) and WR Nate Washington (hip) were limited in practice Thursday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: We'll watch this because we think Blue is a solid low-end RB1 option. Nate Washington is one of the poorer options at wide receiver this weekend, because he's so unpredictable. Use him as a Hail Mary play at most.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney still day-to-day    Thu Jan 7, 02:34 PM

Texans | Full practice for Chris Polk    Wed Jan 6, 04:44 PM

Houston Texans RB Chris Polk (knee) was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Footballguys view: Polk will serve as a part-time player behind Alfred Blue. He's not an exciting fantasy option, even when you're trying to be 'outside the box' in GPP plays.

Texans | Three Texans limited Wednesday    Wed Jan 6, 04:31 PM

Houston Texans WRs DeAndre Hopkins (hand) and Cecil Shorts (hamstring) and RB Alfred Blue (calf) were limited in practice Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Footballguys view: With Shorts and Nate Washington a bit banged up, we could see rookie Jaelen Strong as the WR2 opposite Hopkins on Wild Card Weekend. We loved Strong coming out of Arizona State, and he's been coming on towards the end of the year. Keep his name in mind when looking for a cheap WR for DFS plays.

Texans | Nate Washington misses practice    Wed Jan 6, 03:12 PM

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington (hip) did not practice Wednesday, Jan. 6.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation if you want a GPP play like Washington or Cecil Shorts in your DFS tournaments. If Washington does play, then Shorts should do more.

Texans | Jadeveon Clowney day-to-day    Wed Jan 6, 02:32 PM

Houston Texans LB Jadeveon Clowney (foot) is listed as day-to-day.

Footballguys view: Clowney is expected to play against the Chiefs on Wild Card Weekend. If he does play, Clowney could be limited so they don't aggravate his foot injury further.

Texans | Duane Brown goes to IR    Tue Jan 5, 05:06 PM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Jan. 5. OT Andrew McDonald was subsequently signed off the San Diego Chargers' practice squad.

Texans | Duane Brown tore quadriceps    Tue Jan 5, 01:46 PM

Houston Texans OT Duane Brown (quadriceps) tore his quadriceps in Week 17 and is out for the playoffs.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Texans here. They'll go to veteran Chris Clark as Brian Hoyer's blind-side protector against a Chiefs defense who should be getting star pass-rusher Justin Houston back for the playoffs.

Texans | Cecil Shorts could play     Mon Jan 4, 04:10 PM

Houston Texans WR Cecil Shorts (hamstring) has a chance to play in the Wild Card round of the playoffs this weekend, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Footballguys view: Getting Shorts back would be huge for the Texans offense. While DeAndre Hopkins can stretch the field, Shorts can work the underneath routes to get open. We'll know more about his playing status later in the week.

Texans | Nate Washington day-to-day    Mon Jan 4, 04:09 PM

Houston Texans WR Nate Washington (hip) is considered day-to-day, according to head coach Bill O'Brien.

Texans | Jaelen Strong has six receptions    Sun Jan 3, 09:36 PM

Houston Texans WR Jaelen Strong posted six receptions for 56 yards in the Week 17 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He was targeted seven times.

Footballguys view: With the aging, injured Nate Washington and Cecil Shorts mostly out of the way in this game, the newly svelte Strong showed that he has a promise playing opposite DeAndre Hopkins.
