Chiefs | Derrick Johnson looking to join contender    Wed Feb 14, 05:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson said he would like to sign with a Super Bowl contender this offseason. He said he also looking to play a few more seasons.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson will be free agent    Tue Feb 13, 03:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Derrick Johnson's contract will not be extended before the new league year begins in mid-March. Johnson is Kansas City's all-time leading tackler.

Footballguys view: It's going to be weird seeing Johnson wear another jersey. A first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2005, Johnson has been a long-time tackling machine in Kansas City. He's not quite the player he used to be, but Johnson is still capable of making an impact as a part time player. Johnson will have interest on the open market.

Chiefs | Eric Berry should be ready for Week 1    Mon Feb 12, 12:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry (Achilles') should be ready for the start of the 2018 season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Berry will return to a defense that will likely have a different look in 2018. We'll see them likely move on from LBs Derrick Johnson and Tamba Hali this offseason in order to free up salary cap space. Berry's return will help the secondary and give them a veteran leader on the field.

Chiefs | Two Chiefs LBs could be cut    Fri Feb 9, 12:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson and LB Tamba Hali could be released this offseason, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick of the Chiefs in 2005, it would be odd to see Johnson playing in another uniform. He graded out positively in 2017 but the Chiefs seem intent to move on with Reggie Ragland in Johnson's spot. Hali barely played last year (116 snaps) and is not the same player he used to be. Releasing both would free up over $15 million on the Chiefs cap.

Chiefs | Kendall Fuller could start    Thu Feb 8, 07:45 PM

Impending Kansas City Chiefs CB Kendall Fuller is expected to receive a lot of playing time for the Chiefs next season and could be one of the team's starting cornerbacks.

Footballguys view: A surprising addition to the Alex Smith trade, Fuller is a young up and comer, who absolutely should get a ton of playing time wherever he is. The Chiefs love him and so it makes sense to rely on him.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes making strides    Fri Feb 2, 11:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is 'way ahead of schedule' in his development, according to one of his coaches.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs must have seen this behind the scenes, not to mention in Week 17 and the preseason. He should at least keep the Chiefs offense level with 2017 in fantasy terms, and could easily add value to all of their players by unlocking downfield passing potential that Alex Smith was just opening up to last year.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce confident in Patrick Mahomes    Thu Feb 1, 11:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce said that he knows QB Patrick Mahomes is 'ready for the opportunity' and that the club can 'without a doubt' win a championship with Mahomes under center. 'He can throw the ball any way, he can throw it off his back foot and he can jump and throw, he can throw the ball anywhere, any way you need for it to be thrown,' Kelce added. 'His confidence is definitely one of the best attributes to his game.'

Footballguys view: Kelce put Mahomes in on Madden this morning when piloting the Chiefs, according to NFL Network's Dan Hellie. He and Tyreek Hill could have higher ceilings than they had with Alex Smith, and their speculative value is up.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes expected to start    Wed Jan 31, 10:48 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is expected to enter the 2018 season as the starter with the trade of QB Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Mahomes has at least Smith's fantasy ceiling in 2018, and probably more. Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce put defenses in an untenable bind and Mahomes is more aggressive throwing downfield than Smith. The Chiefs are losing Matt Nagy's playcalling, but Mahomes could make up for that and then some.

Chiefs | Alex Smith reportedly dealt to Washington    Tue Jan 30, 09:56 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs reportedly reached an agreement to trade QB Alex Smith to the Washington Redskins on Tuesday, Jan. 30. While the compensation the Chiefs will receive has yet to be released and any trade involving Smith can't be completed until the first day of the new league year (3 p.m. on March 14), sources say the deal is in place and will proceed.

Footballguys view: Washington is clearly moving on from Kirk Cousins, and this trade might hurt any chance they would have to extract any value in a trade after tagging and signing Cousins, because they can't credibly keep him now. Denver and the Jets seem to be the leading candidates to land Cousins now. Smith should have some of the same strengths as Cousins, but could be more conservative without Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill. Patrick Mahomes will take over in Kansas City and could unlock a lot of value in the Chiefs pass offense that Smith did not.

Chiefs | Alex Smith not close to retiring    Tue Jan 30, 06:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has played 13 seasons in the NFL but is not close to hanging up his cleats. 'I love what I do too much, I love the challenge of it, I still feel great, my body feels great,' Smith said.

Footballguys view: Smith played well in 2017 and certainly is among the 32 best quarterbacks in the league. He'll start somewhere in 2018, but likely not in Kansas City.

Chiefs | Alex Smith hopeful for return to KC    Tue Jan 30, 12:18 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith told The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, Jan. 30, that his preference is to return to the team in 2018.

Footballguys view: Of course he does. Andy Reid's offense has been tailored to him, and Smith has strong talent around him and continuity. If he is traded, he could end up in Cleveland, Arizona, or the Jets in a rebuilding project, instead of the instant playoff team situation he was part of in Kansas City. Smith had a strong fantasy season with high peaks in 2017, but he'll likely be a pedestrian fantasy option elsewhere.

Chiefs | Kansas City makes coaching changes    Mon Jan 29, 04:41 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announced the following promotions on the coaching staff Monday, Jan. 28: Mike Kafka to quarterbacks coach, Mark DeLeone to inside linebackers coach, Mike Smith to outside linebackers coach, Corey Matthaei to assistant offensive line coach, Joe Bleymaier to assistant quarterbacks coach, and Terry Bradden to defensive quality control coach. Additionally, Jay Valai and David Girardi were hired as quality control coaches. Special projects coach Tommy Brasher will retire, while linebackers coach Gary Gibbs will not return.

Footballguys view: Assistant head coach Brad Childress, a long time Reid right hand, is also retiring. Kafka could be the next rising star in the Andy Reid coaching tree.

Chiefs | Mike Kafka expected to QBs coach    Fri Jan 26, 02:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs offensive quality control coach Mike Kafka is expected to be named the team's new quarterbacks coach, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Kafka was drafted by Andy Reid back in 2010 and could be groomed to be the next Reid disciple to reinvigorate an offense.

Chiefs | Andy Reid taking back play-calling duties    Fri Jan 26, 02:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he will be calling the offensive plays next season.

Footballguys view: Reid revealed that he called the plays in the season finale in Denver, which is especially notable because rookie Patrick Mahomes started that game - and he could be the starter next season. Reid made sure to point out that this isn't a reflection of his view of new offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. Reid's playcalling in 2016 wasn't exactly inspiring, but if Mahomes is his quarterback, it could get looser.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce won't play in Pro Bowl    Tue Jan 16, 05:34 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (concussion) will not participate in the Pro Bowl due to a concussion he suffered in the playoffs. Tennessee Titans TE Delanie Walker has been named as Kelce's replacement.

Footballguys view: Kelce suffered two concussions during the 2017 season, one in the regular season and one in the playoffs. He needs to take it easy and get back in action when the Chiefs get to work at OTAs later in the spring.

Chiefs | Darrelle Revis plans to play    Mon Jan 15, 01:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Darrelle Revis said he plans to play again next season. He believes can play better if he participates in offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Revis did not look like his old self in a handful of games with the Chiefs, but he hasn't looked like "Revis Island" for some time. There's an $8.8 million bonus due in March, so expect the Chiefs to move on from that deal. When released, there's a chance the Chiefs could bring Revis back on a smaller contract.

Chiefs | KC hiring Deland McCullough    Fri Jan 12, 01:22 AM

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs are hiring USC's Deland McCullough to be their running backs coach, according to ESPN's Adam Rittenberg.

Footballguys view: McCullough was with the Trojans for one year, guiding Ron Jones to a 1,500-plus yard season. Before that, McCullough coached for Indiana where he was able to work with guys like Tevin Coleman (Falcons) and Jordan Howard (Bears). Now with the Chiefs, McCullough will work with league-leading rusher Kareem Hunt to continue to get top-level production out of him.

Chiefs | Kansas City to talk with Deland McCullough    Thu Jan 11, 06:58 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are scheduled to interview Southern California running backs coach Deland McCullough for their running backs coaching position, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have an opening at RB coach with Eric Bieniemy getting promoted to offensive coordinator. McCullough was with the Trojans for one year, guiding Ron Jones to a 1,500-plus yard season. Before that, McCullough coached for Indiana where he was able to work with guys like Tevin Coleman (Falcons) and Jordan Howard (Bears).

Chiefs | Eric Bieniemy officially named OC    Tue Jan 9, 06:27 PM

Updating a previous report, Kanas City Chiefs running backs coach Eric Bieniemy was officially named the new offensive coordinator, as expected, Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: Bienemy was the strongest in-house candidate to replace former OC Matt Nagy since he was hired by the Bears to be their head coach. An NFL running back and long-time RB coach, Bieniemy is known for his tough coaching style but ability to bring the best out of the players working under his guiadance (see Kareem Hunt, Spencer Ware, Jamaal Charles...and even Adrian Peterson when he was RB coach in Minnesota). He's been with Andy Reid ever since he came to the Chiefs (2013) and will get to help construct on offense that should feature QB Patrick Mahomes.

Chiefs | Kansas City signs Jace Amaro     Tue Jan 9, 05:51 PM

Free-agent TE Jace Amaro (Titans) was signed to a Reserve/Future contract by the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, Jan. 9.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick of the Jets in 2014, Amaro was supposed to be a mismatch 'move' tight end coming out of Texas Tech. Instead of taking the league by storm, Amaro's career has fell incredibly short of his potential. Amaro was with the Titans in 2016 and was waived at final cuts in 2017. He's a longshot to make the 53-man roster for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Plethora of signings for Chiefs     Mon Jan 8, 07:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB George Atkinson, WR Daniel Braverman, WR Gehrig Dieter, TE Anthony Firkser, OT Dillon Gordon, LB Tyrone Holmes, OG Kaleb Johnson, DT Mike Purcell, DB Will Redmond and OT Andrew Wylie were signed to Reserve/Future contracts Monday, Jan. 8.

Footballguys view: Braverman, a seventh-round pick of the Bears out of Western Michigan in 2016, is the player to monitor here in super deep dynasty leagues. He's a slot receiver in the mold of Brandon Stokley. Braverman can get open on underneath routes and is dangerous after the catch due to his quickness.

Chiefs | Brad Childress plans to retire    Mon Jan 8, 01:29 PM

Kansas City Chiefs assistant head coach Brad Childress is planning to retire, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Childress has been one of Andy Reid's top coaches for the last five years. This announcement comes on the same day that Chiefs OC Matt Nagy accepts the head coaching job for the Bears. The Chiefs offense is likely to look much different with these two coaches moving on...and the eventual move away from QB Alex Smith.

Chiefs | Eric Bieniemy expected to be OC candidate    Mon Jan 8, 12:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs running backs coach Eric Bieniemy is expected to receive strong consideration for the team's vacant offensive coordinator position.

Footballguys view: Bienemy has been Andy Reid's running back coach ever since he got to Kansas City. He can be credited for the breakout success of guys like Kareem Hunt and Spencer Ware. Bienemy knows the Reid system well and has to be considered a top in-house option for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce doing well    Sun Jan 7, 10:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (concussion) 'probably would have been alright' for a playoff game this coming weekend had the Chiefs defeated the Tennessee Titans, head coach Andy Reid said Sunday, Jan. 7.

Footballguys view: Kelce had two concussions in three months and it's something to monitor going forward. With the Chiefs losing, Kelce has the entire offseason to get better.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson plans to play in 2018    Sun Jan 7, 12:17 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson said he definitely plans on continue his playing career in 2018.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick by the Chiefs in 2005, Johnson's play dropped off a bit in 2017. He has a $10.2 million cap hit in 2018 with $2.2 million in dead money. The Chiefs are cap strapped and could save $8 million by cutting Johnson.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce solid before injury    Sat Jan 6, 08:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (concussion) caught all four of his targeted passes for 66 yards and a touchdown during the Wild Card game Saturday, Jan. 6, against the Tennessee Titans. Kelce would leave the game and enter concussion protocol.

Footballguys view: Kelce's exit led the Chiefs to their downfall. Once he was out of the game, the Chiefs passing attack looked totally different and couldn't do too much. Kelce suffered two concussions this season (one early in the regular season, one in the Wild Card game) and that's something to monitor going forward. With no setbacks, Kelce should easily be ready for OTAs later this spring.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt ran 11 times for 42 yards and scored a touchdown in his team's 22-21 loss to the Tennessee Titans in Wild Card action.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs led 21-3 at halftime but barely used the NFL's leading rusher. It's a shame that we won't get to see more of Hunt in the postseason. Expect him to be the centerpiece of the Chiefs offense in 2018, likely with Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.

Chiefs | Alex Smith throws two TDs in Wild Card loss    Sat Jan 6, 08:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith went 24-for-33 for 264 yards and two touchdowns in a Wild Card loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: Only 33 of those passing yards came in the second half. Once TE Travis Kelce (concussion) was knocked out of the game, Smith couldn't do much through the air. On fourth down looking to get into field goal range, Smith took a deep shot to WR Albert Wilson that fell to the ground incomplete. That will likely go down as his final pass with the Chiefs. Reports indicate the Chiefs will be open to trading Smith away. When they trade Smith, that opens the door for 2017 first-round pick Patrick Mahomes to take over as starter.

Chiefs | KC open to trading Alex Smith?    Sat Jan 6, 12:12 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs will not actively seek out trade partners for QB Alex Smith this offseason, but they will listen, according to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, who speculated the one thing that may cause 'all sides to pull back' is if the Chiefs make a run to the Super Bowl.

Footballguys view: The team moved up in the 2017 NFL draft to select QB Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech, and he's the team's QB of the future. Smith has one more year left on his contract with a $20.6 million cap hit for 2018. The Chiefs could clear up $17 million in cap space by getting Smith off the books. With so many QB desperate teams, the Chiefs could fetch a few draft picks for the veteran.

Chiefs | Kareem Hunt wins rushing title    Fri Jan 5, 02:04 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt led the NFL in rushing yardage for the 2017 season with 1,327 yards. Los Angeles Rams RB Todd Gurley, who did not play in Week 17, finished second with 1,305.

Footballguys view: Hunt had one carry in Week 17 against the Broncos, but that 35-yard touchdown run was enough to put him over the top. The rookie from Toledo proved to be a great find for the Chiefs, and he made a huge impact for them from Week 1. With his role in the Chiefs offense, Hunt is a first-round pick in fantasy drafts next year...even if KC switches to Patrick Mahomes at quarterback.
