Chiefs | Tyreek Hill may receive extension    Thu Feb 7, 06:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is eligible to sign a contract extension this offseason, and general manager Brett Veach said he expects to have conversations with Hill's agent over the next several weeks.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs acquired Hill as a fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft. He fell in the draft due to off-field concerns but has stayed out of trouble and produced at a high level in the pros. He's under contract through the 2019 season but the Chiefs may want to get a deal done sooner rather than later so his price doesn't go up further.

Chiefs | K.C. nixes hoops for Patrick Mahomes    Thu Feb 7, 01:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has been banned by the team from playing basketball after general manager Brett Veach saw a recent online video of Mahomes playing in a pick-up hoops game. 'As soon as I saw (video of Mahomes playing basketball), it probably took me about two seconds to call his agent and tell him that was a big no-no,' Veach said Thursday during an interview on Kansas City radio station WHB 810 AM. 'The (Chiefs') Kingdom can rest assured that we have that under control: No more basketball for Pat.'

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Mahomes is a superstar quarterback who doesn't need to get hurt playing basketball. This is commonplace for top players in the NFL. Mahomes can hoop it up as much as he wants when his playing days are done.

Chiefs | KC could part ways with Justin Houston    Fri Feb 1, 02:41 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston is due to count a team-high $21.1 million against the cap in 2019, making him a prime candidate to get released this offseason, according to Nate Taylor of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Houston might not be worth that much more because of his injury history than his level of play. Houston hasn't played 16 games since 2014 and has missed 21 games over the last four years. The team could attempt to restructure his deal, but they also have Breeland Speaks coming up behind Houston.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce can become just the third tight end in NFL history to achieve four straight seasons of at least 80 receptions and 1,000 receiving yards. Former NFL TEs Tony Gonzalez and Jason Witten are the other two.

Footballguys view: Kelce vs Ertz will be a good debate in 2019 drafts, with both worthy of second-round picks in redraft leagues.

Chiefs | Dee Ford open to tag    Thu Jan 24, 03:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Dee Ford wants to stay with the Chiefs and he said he wouldn't mind receiving the franchise tag this offseason.

Footballguys view: Most players don't like the franchise tag because it's a one-year deal and there is no long-term security. Ford seems to be open to the tag, and the Chiefs have plenty of big-money decisions coming up. Franchise tags for linebackers are expected to be worth at least $15 million.

Chiefs | Steve Spagnuolo in line with Chiefs    Wed Jan 23, 10:36 AM

Former New York Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo has emerged as the favorite to be hired as Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator, according to sources.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed WR Josh Crockett, LB Raymond Davison, OT Ryan Hunter, DT Joey Ivie, QB Chase Litton, LB Robert McCray, OT Pace Murphy, DB D'Montre Wade and TE David Wells to Reserve/Futures deals Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Footballguys view: Crockett played his college ball at Central Oklahoma and was known as a big threat. Measuring in at 6'4" 195 pounds, Crockett finished 6th in school history in both receptions (129) and yards receiving (2,003). Crockett also snared 18 touchdown catches from 2014-17. Super deep dynasty formats should monitor him but he's a long-shot to be sure.

Chiefs | Bob Sutton shown the door    Tue Jan 22, 02:49 PM

Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Bob Sutton was fired Tuesday, Jan. 22.

Footballguys view: Sutton has been with Chiefs head coach Andy Reid the whole time he's been in Kansas City. The team is in a Super Bowl window and their defense was a problem for them in 2018...and certainly in the postseason. The offense is geared to outscore anyone but they need a defense that can close a team out. Sutton's firing means a coveted job is coming open for some coach out there.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes could receive big extension    Sun Jan 20, 12:48 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes will be able to sign a contract extension after the 2019 season and could become the first NFL player to receive a $200 million contract, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Mahomes was outstanding in his first season as the Chiefs starter, throwing for over 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns. The Chiefs do have him under control through the 2021 season (with the fifth-year option) but wrapping him up early may actually save them money over waiting and having his price skyrocket even further.

They'll have some salary cap work to do with guys like Tyreek Hill and Dee Ford set for big pay days in the near future.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is averaging 4.1 yards per route against press coverage - best in a season by any player since 2016 (minimum 100 routes).

Footballguys view: Press coverage is a risky proposition against Hill. He's got the quickness to beat the jam at the line of scrimmage and Hill's speed means he can get by defenders and pull away.
