Chiefs | Alex Smith working in pistol offense    Mon May 20, 02:19 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have practiced some plays from the pistol formation during organized team activities. QB Alex Smith likely would have to use his legs and arm in the formation since it includes the option in the plays.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs recently hired Chris Ault to help the team learn the intricacies of the pistol offense. Ault is considered the godfather of the pistol for what he did with the offense during his time as the head coach at Nevada.

Chiefs | Donnie Avery dealing with injury    Thu May 16, 07:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Donnie Avery (ankle) injured his ankle during organized team activities Tuesday, May 14, and has been limited the last few days.

Footballguys view: Avery is competing with Jonathan Baldwin to be the team's second WR opposite Dwayne Bowe. This injury should be fine by the start of training camp.

Chiefs | Jonathan Baldwin seems to be top choice for No. 2 WR job    Thu May 16, 07:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jonathan Baldwin appears to be the favorite for the No. 2 wide receiver job at this point but has not emerged as the dominant offseason player like he was last offseason. WRs Donnie Avery, Dexter McCluster and Terrance Copper are also expected to be candidates for the job.

Footballguys view: Baldwin has the skill set to be a top 32 WR in the game today. He's failed to play up to his potential as a pro but he could be re-energized under new head coach Andy Reid. With Dwayne Bowe taking the attention of the defense away the WR2 is going to see plenty of single coverage.

Chiefs | Branden Albert ready to work    Wed May 15, 08:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OT Branden Albert arrived at organized team activities (OTAs) Tuesday, May 14, and he took his spot at starting left tackle as he had promised. 'I never was sad, never disgruntled, just a little confused,' Albert said. 'Everything is clear now. It's in the past.'

Footballguys view: Albert stays with the Chiefs even though they had him on the trading block earlier this year. He'll stay at left tackle while first overall pick Eric Fisher will start as the right tackle.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe has high expectations for offense    Wed May 15, 04:13 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe said he expects to lead the NFL in receptions and receiving touchdowns in 2013, and that RB Jamaal Charles will lead the league in rushing this season.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs offense has been energized by new head coach Andy Reid. We'll see what kind of chemistry can be established between Bowe and new QB Alex Smith.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said consultant Chris Ault will help the team defend the pistol offense and could also help the team add the offense to their scheme. 'He's been here once, and visited with the defense,' Reid said, 'and he visited with [offensive assistant Brad Childress], and they went over stuff. He's not moving here ... I'll give him projects to do and work together with Brad.'

Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Moeaki (knee) was on the field for the first day of organized team activities (OTAs) Tuesday, May 14, but he did not practice as he recovers from a procedure on his knee.

Footballguys view: Moeaki is a talented move TE but durability issues have held him back during his entire pro career. He needs to get healthy and beat out veteran Anthony Fasano and rookie Travis Kelce for the starting job.

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, May 14, that RB Shaun Draughn (hernia) missed the first day of organized team activities (OTAs) while recovering from a sports hernia.

Footballguys view: Draughn has extra competition in the RB corps after the Chiefs added rookie Knile Davis in the third-round of the 2013 NFL draft. The two will compete with second-year RB Cyrus Gray to be the primary backup behind Jamaal Charles.

Chiefs | Knile Davis signs    Mon May 13, 01:44 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed RB Knile Davis, their third-round draft pick, to an undisclosed four-year deal Monday, May 13. The team has now signed three of their eight draft picks from this year.

Footballguys view: Davis was a reach for the Chiefs in the 2013 NFL draft. Durability issues are a huge concern for him after multiple injuries in college, including an ankle injury that cost him the entire 2011 season. Even when fully healthy Davis runs soft, goes down on first contact, and has fumbling problems. There were several (better) running backs left on the board when the Chiefs nabbed Davis in the third-round.

Chiefs | Can rookie Davis cure his fumbling problems?    Sun May 12, 08:51 PM

In the Chiefs rookie minicamp RB Knile Davis was constantly seen carrying the ball high and tight to his body. In college Davis had fumbling issues because he runs too high and exposes his midsection to unnecessary hits. Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said, "I can't tell you I'm big on fumbling. I don't like it. I don't have a lot of patience for it. I feel like with this kid, we'll have an answer there for that."

Footballguys view: Davis was a surprise pick by the Chiefs. He has serious durability issues after multiple ankle issues, including an injury that cost him the entire 2011 season. Davis fails to generate power and runs tentative, often dancing behind the line of scrimmage and wasting motion. We're not as excited about him as others are. He'll compete with Shaun Draughn and Cyrus Gray to be the primary backup behind Jamaal Charles.

Chiefs | Eric Fisher expected to work at RT    Sun May 12, 03:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OT Eric Fisher said he expected to work at right tackle during the rookie minicamp because OT Branden Albert is the team's left tackle. 'I kind of expected it. Albert is a great tackle, somebody I'll be able to learn from. I'm really looking forward to getting through this rookie camp and then learning from the veterans and just improving my game every day,' Fisher said.

Footballguys view: This move isn't that uncommon. Several left tackles have started out on the right side early in their careers. Fisher could move to the left side next year if the Chiefs don't come to a long-term agreement with Albert.

Chiefs | Two expected to compete for No. 3 QB job    Sun May 12, 01:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QBs Ricky Stanzi and Tyler Bray are expected to compete for the No. 3 quarterback job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Stanzi has done little to impress during his time in the league. He has a strong arm but has serious accuracy issues that have not been fixed so far. Bray also has a rocket arm but better overall talent. Maturity issues and off field concerns caused him to go undrafted in 2013.

Chiefs | Rookie QB Bray has 'excellent chance' to make roster    Sat May 11, 11:47 PM

Chiefs undrafted rookie QB Tyler Bray (Tennessee) has an 'excellent chance' to make the final roster according to the Kansas City Star. Bray has elite arm talent but off field and maturity issues caused every team to pass on him in the draft.

Footballguys view: Bray plays a lot like Jay Cutler, but perceived attitude problems made him go undrafted. We'll see if he can beat out Ricky Stanzi for the third QB spot behind Alex Smith and Chase Daniel.

Chiefs | Expect Branden Albert to practice next week    Fri May 10, 08:17 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said OT Branden Albert will participate in offseason workouts next week and that Albert is excited to rejoin the team.

Footballguys view: Albert was on the trade block earlier this offseason but now seems to be part of the Chiefs' plans in 2013. We'll see if they try to work out a long-term contract or if Albert plays out his one year under the franchise tag. If he moves on in free agency next year the team could just slide 2013 first overall pick Eric Fisher over to the left side.

Chiefs | Two picks sign    Fri May 10, 12:32 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed sixth-round picks OL Eric Kush and LB Mike Catapano to undisclosed four-year deals.

Chiefs | Mutual interest in deal with Branden Albert    Mon May 6, 11:10 AM

There is mutual interest between the Kansas City Chiefs and OT Branden Albert on signing him to a contract extension.

Footballguys view: After placing him on the trade block and selecting an offensive tackle with the first overall pick (Eric Fisher) it looks like Albert is staying put in Kansas City. Fisher will move over to right tackle and Albert will keep his spot on the left. The Chiefs could work off of contracts like the ones William Beatty (Giants) and Jake Long (Rams) received earlier this year.

Chiefs | Branden Albert expected to stay at LT    Thu May 2, 09:49 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid indicated OT Branden Albert will start at left tackle this season while OT Eric Fisher will start at right tackle.

Footballguys view: Wow. The Chiefs just spent the number one overall pick on a right tackle. Albert was slapped with the franchise tag earlier this offseason and has been placed on the trade block. No team has been willing to deal the Chiefs a premium pick for the veteran left tackle.

Chiefs | Open to new deal with Branden Albert     Thu May 2, 08:44 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs are now looking to lock up OT Branden Albert with a long-term contract after trade talks with the Miami Dolphins have reportedly broken down, according to several sources involved with the process.

Footballguys view: Albert would have to be open to a position switch if he stayed with the Chiefs. The team selected Eric Fisher (Central Michigan) with the number one overall pick and he will be their starting left tackle. Albert seemed to initially welcome a move to the right side, but his stance on that is unclear right now.

Chiefs | Anthony Sherman trade update    Wed May 1, 01:35 PM

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs have acquired FB Anthony Sherman from the Arizona Cardinals for CB Javier Arenas.

Footballguys view: Sherman gives the Chiefs a multidimensional fullback who can contribute as a short yardage runner or receiver out of the backfield. He'll mainly help blast open holes for Jamaal Charles.

Chiefs | Expected to acquire Anthony Sherman    Wed May 1, 12:17 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to trade for Arizona Cardinals FB Anthony Sherman.

Footballguys view: Sherman is an all purpose fullback who can contribute as a short yardage runner and receiver out of the backfield. He's also known as a strong blocker at the point of attack.

Chiefs | Didn't want Matt Barkley    Tue Apr 30, 10:10 AM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he had to laugh when he heard the Chiefs were interested in drafting QB Matt Barkley.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are content with Alex Smith as their starter and Chase Daniel as the backup. They added Tyler Bray (Tennessee) as an undrafted free agent to be their developmental third QB.

Chiefs | Rookie TE Kelce to compete for starting job    Mon Apr 29, 08:27 PM

Adam Teicher, from the Kansas City Star, reports rookie TE Travis Kelce will compete with Tony Moeaki for the starting job in training camp. Chiefs coach Andy Reid loves Kelce's versatility, "He doesn't have to play on the line. You can move him out as a wide receiver and he's a legitimate receiver in that spot."

Footballguys view: No real surprise here. Moeaki is talented but oft-injured while Kelce is a good all around tight end. He's a talented move tight end who can be a factor in the red zone as well as attack the deep middle seam of the defense.

Chiefs | Still shopping Branden Albert    Mon Apr 29, 08:27 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs are still looking to deal OT Branden Albert, even though talks with the Miami Dolphins are dormant.

Footballguys view: Albert doesn't seem receptive to the idea of moving to right tackle after the Chiefs added LT Eric Fisher with the number one overall pick. Teams like the Detroit Lions, San Diego Chargers and Arizona Cardinals could be potential landing spots.

Chiefs | Dayne Crist will take part in minicamp    Sun Apr 28, 02:53 PM

Chiefs | Tyler Bray added    Sat Apr 27, 11:15 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed undrafted free agent QB Tyler Bray (Tennessee) Saturday, April 27.

Footballguys view: Bray is the classic million dollar arm with a ten cent head quarterback. He supposedly was set to sign with the Dolphins, but changed his mind when the Chiefs offered more money. Bray has the arm talent to be an NFL quarterback, but he clearly turned off the entire league with his interviews and other postseason performances. Andy Reid has been a quarterback whisperer in the past, but this is one of his toughest projects yet.

Chiefs | Not worried about Knile Davis' fumbling issues    Sat Apr 27, 04:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said the team is not worried about RB Knile Davis' 13 fumbles in his three years at the University of Arkansas because they believe the coaches can help improve his ball security.

Footballguys view: Nothing will kill a rookie RB's value like coughing the ball off, but it's definitely the sort of thing which we've seen a guy overcome so that he can stay on the field and have an impact.

Chiefs | Tony Moeaki ready for camp    Sat Apr 27, 04:50 PM

Chiefs | Knile Davis added in third round    Fri Apr 26, 10:26 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Arkansas RB Knile Davis with the 96th overall selection in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Davis has good size and great speed, as well as the ability to catch out of the backfield. He will take some of the wear and tear off Jamaal Charles, hopefully extending the veteran's career a bit. Davis runs with a high center of gravity though and could expose himself to injuries so that's something to watch.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce selected 63rd overall    Fri Apr 26, 08:38 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Cincinnati TE Travis Kelce with the 63rd overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Kelce is a very good blocker and could end up being a very nice receiver as well but is very raw and still learning the position. It'll take some time to reveal his full potential.

Chiefs | Like Eric Fisher's athleticism     Fri Apr 26, 11:29 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs preferred OT Eric Fisher over Jacksonville Jaguars OT Luke Joeckel because of his athleticism, nastiness and the team felt Fisher is a better fit in head coach Andy Reid's system.

Chiefs | Eric Fisher selected first overall    Thu Apr 25, 08:16 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs selected OT Eric Fisher with the first overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Lots of smoke pointed towards Luke Joeckel, but Fisher impressed from the Senior Bowl onward. We expect Brandon Albert will be gone by the end of tomorrow.
