Chiefs | Travis Kelce a rare weapon    Sun Feb 19, 09:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce ranked second in the NFL with 655 yards after catch in 2016, and he was the only tight end to rank in the top 15 in the category.

Chiefs | Nick Foles' option unlikely to be exercised    Wed Feb 15, 02:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles' 2017 option likely will not be picked up by the Chiefs, which will make him an unrestricted free agent.

Footballguys view: The option was worth around $6.4 million according to reports, but the Chiefs are in desperate need of cap space. They have less than $1 million in cap space at this time, and they want to find a way to get new contracts for Eric Berry and Dontari Poe this offseason. Foles looked good in limited playing time with the Chiefs last year, and he's likely to get a chance to compete for a starting job (somewhere) in 2017.

Kansas City Chiefs co-offensive coordinator Brad Childress has been named the team's assistant head coach. Co-offensive coordinator Matt Nagy will take over as the offensive coordinator.

Chiefs | De'Anthony Thomas likely gone    Mon Feb 13, 10:42 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR De'Anthony Thomas is likely to be traded or released with the emergence of WR Tyreek Hill in the roles Thomas was drafted for, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Thomas has not played up to his potential, and the Chiefs will wisely move on. A fourth-round pick in 2014, Thomas has only 48 career catches in three seasons as a part-time player.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles expected to be released    Sun Feb 12, 05:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is expected to be released this offseason in order for the team to create salary cap space.

Footballguys view: Charles has a $6.1 million cap number in 2017, and there's no dead money remaining on his contract. The Chiefs have only $4 million in cap space, and they want to sign both DT Dontari Poe and S Eric Berry to long-term deals. Releasing Charles is a virtual lock.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe may be too expensive for Chiefs    Fri Feb 10, 04:18 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe may be too expensive for the Chiefs to re-sign if they re-sign impending free-agent SS Eric Berry before Poe.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs would like to re-sign both, but Berry is believed to be the team's top priority at this point. The team is strapped for cap space with only $4 million to work with at this time. They'll move around some money to get at least one of these guys signed, but signing both is likely a pipe dream.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles hopes to be ready for 2017    Thu Feb 9, 01:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is working hard in order to be ready for the 2017 season, according to general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey said he does not know what will happen in March but sees Charles as a member of the team at this point.

Footballguys view: The backfield didn't perform quite as well as we expected, so Charles might actually have a place when he returns. We see the backfield as a bit of a mess in that case, though Spencer Ware has the highest upside of the group.

Chiefs | GM backs Alex Smith as starter    Thu Feb 9, 01:50 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said QB Alex Smith will continue to be team's starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: There's no other option there right now, so barring a really high pick, we don't know who would challenge Smith. We think the team has to be thinking about their next signal caller. Smith is good enough to get them into the playoffs, but appears to fall short of what the Chiefs need to make a legitimate run at a championship.

Chiefs | Jah Reid may be released    Thu Feb 9, 12:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OT Jah Reid could be a cap casualty this offseason because the team would save $2.08 million in salary cap space. Reid played only 94 snaps this season.

Chiefs | Mike Kafka joins Chiefs' staff    Tue Feb 7, 06:01 PM

Former Cincinnati Bengals QB Mike Kafka is being hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive quality control coach Tuesday, Feb. 7, according to a source.

Chiefs | John Dorsey, Andy Reid to be offered extensions    Sat Feb 4, 11:28 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs will attempt to extend the contracts of general manager John Dorsey and head coach Andy Reid this offseason, according to team chairman Clark Hunt, who said he was 'very satisfied' with the job they have been doing. Both men are entering the final year of their deals.

Footballguys view: They turned around a losing franchise and have made them a consistent, which is more than good enough even though they haven't broken the strangehold that Brady, Roethlisberger and previously Manning help on Super Bowl berths in the AFC.

Chiefs | KC interested in Tony Romo?    Sat Feb 4, 09:57 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs are one team that could be interested in acquiring Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo this offseason, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The team is reportedly looking to upgrade the quarterback position after losing in the second round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year.

Footballguys view: Alex Smith was partially to blame for the loss and he is known for his lack of aggressiveness, but so was the team's meeker approach on offense under Andy Reid. Romo could add more derring-do, but if Reid doesn't change significantly, the results could be the same no matter who the quarterback is.

Chiefs | Nick Foles may be cap casualty    Fri Feb 3, 05:49 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles could be a cap casualty this offseason since he is scheduled to count $10.75 million against the salary cap in 2017.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs made a contract with Foles that had an option to pay him basically the same amount that Alex Smith is due next season in the event that Foles outplayed him in 2016. That never came to pass, so Foles will either have to change his deal or re-sign with the Chiefs after they release him. The Chiefs are one of the most likely spots for him because of his history with head coach Andy Reid when both were with the Eagles.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson hoping to return by camp    Fri Feb 3, 12:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') is optimistic he will be able to run by the start of offseason workouts and hopes to be ready by training camp, according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor.

Footballguys view: Johnson tore his left achilles late in the season. He came back from a torn right achilles suffered in 2014, but that one came much earlier in the season. The Chiefs wouldn't save much money by releasing him, so he'll likely be with the team even if he's not ready for Week 1.

Chiefs | Eric Berry will sit out season if tagged    Thu Feb 2, 07:19 PM

Updating a previous item, Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry said he is prepared to 'sit the season out' if the team franchise tags him again for a second consecutive year. 'I'll just take that time to chill with my family, honestly,' Berry said. 'I just want what's right. That's it.'

Footballguys view: Berry would get a handsome 13 million dollars if he is franchised, but that is less than he would get guaranteed on a new long term contract. His willingness to sit out instead of playing under a second tag indicates the unfairness of the current CBA terms in some players' eyes.

Chiefs | Eric Berry to hold out if tagged    Thu Feb 2, 05:02 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent SS Eric Berry said he will hold out if the is given the franchise tag again, although he does want to stay in Kansas City.

Chiefs | Eric Berry not interested in tag    Thu Feb 2, 03:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent SS Eric Berry said he will not play under the franchise tag in 2017. Berry is looking to sign a long-term contract during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Berry is a boom/bust player from play to play, which means that the Chiefs know both the upside and downside of having him as a defensive keystone. They like their up and coming safeties behind him, so they might not be willing to pay him the most on the open market.

Chiefs | Chris Jones should have significant role    Thu Feb 2, 01:32 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris D. Jones is expected to have a significant role next season even if the team re-signs impending free-agent DT Dontari Poe.

Footballguys view: Jones was on PFF's all-rookie team and generated a lot more impact than his stats indicate. He should be stealing more snaps from Allen Bailey and Jaye Howard in 2017, and could elevate to starter even if Poe returns.

Link to story

Chiefs | Eric Murray may have bigger role    Thu Feb 2, 01:21 PM

Kansas City Chiefs S Eric Murray probably would receive a bigger role on defense in 2017 if the Chiefs lose impending free-agent SS Eric Berry or restricted free-agent FS Daniel Sorensen. Murray may compete for a starting job if Berry and Sorensen leave.

Footballguys view: Murray was an all-pro special teamer according to PFF, so he is laying the groundwork for a larger role on defense one way or the other. We should learn more about how the team sees him by how they approach Berry's contract negotiations in free agency.

Chiefs | Andy Reid praises Tyreek Hill's intelligence    Wed Feb 1, 10:28 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill will continue to see snaps at running back as well as receiver moving forward, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Hill has blown up the idea that hybrid players can't be fantasy relevant or key pieces of an offense. He could pave the way for more WR/RB slash players to get enough touches to matter in fantasy leagues. He will be a tough player to gauge and likely to be taken earlier than most people want to in drafts next year as his usage should trend up in his second season.

Chiefs | KC signs Darrin Reaves to future deal    Mon Jan 30, 08:25 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed RB Darrin Reaves to a Reserve/Future deal Monday, Jan. 30. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Reaves had a cup of coffee with the Panthers previously and he could have opportunity as a #3 back with the Chiefs next year if Knile Davis and Jamaal Charles don't return.

Chiefs | John Dorsey under contract through 2017    Sun Jan 29, 09:20 AM

Updating a previous report, the contract of Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey runs through the 2017 season and he is expected to remain with the organization barring an unforeseen development, according to a source. It had previously been reported that his contract expired at the end of this season.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson will be RFA    Sat Jan 28, 03:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson will be a restricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Good for about 30 catches a year, Wilson is likely to get a low tender from the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce productive against Denver    Sat Jan 28, 01:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce caught 19 passes for 261 yards and one touchdown against the Denver Broncos this season.

Footballguys view: Von Miller has called Kelce "Fake Gronk" in the past, but Kelce played more like the real Gronk in 2016. The Broncos historically struggle against the tight end position, and that was really highlighted against the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill's role expanding?    Thu Jan 26, 10:01 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill could double his snap count in 2017, according to head coach Andy Reid. 'He was averaging 35 plays a game,' Reid said Thursday, Jan. 26. 'Maybe he can double that or at least take it up a couple notches and allow him to get in more in a starting role.'

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need more from their offense next season, and Hill showed he has the stuff. We think 2017 could be a big year for him.

Chiefs | Eric Berry hopes to re-sign    Wed Jan 25, 05:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent SS Eric Berry said he hopes to re-sign with the Chiefs this offseason.

Footballguys view: We're still a bit shocked the Chiefs didn't do something to lock up Berry sooner. They don't have much cap space ($4.6 million according to OverTheCap.com), so perhaps Berry won't be able to stay with the team that drafted him in the first round back in 2010.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could be released    Sun Jan 22, 12:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles may be a candidate to be released this offseason because he is scheduled to make $7 million in 2017 and dealt with knee injuries this season.

Footballguys view: It's a brutal game y'all. It would be great to see Charles end his career with the Chiefs, but the business side of things always kicks in at some point. His $7 million cap number won't fly, so expect things to change for the veteran back. Charles could return if the two sides can agree on a restructured contract.

Chiefs | Two players signed by Chiefs    Tue Jan 17, 08:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Seantavius Jones and QB Joel Stave were signed to Reserve/Future contracts Tuesday, Jan. 17.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Valdosta State in 2014, Jones is a big-bodied receiver (6'3" 200 pounds) with the reach to play 'above the rim' in the NFL. He's bounced around to a few teams, but Jones is a player we still monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. Going to Kansas City, a place not known for high-powered passing, does dampen his already "longshot" fantasy value.

Chiefs | Brad Childress staying put    Tue Jan 17, 12:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs co-offensive coordinator Brad Childress is 'out of the picture' in the Buffalo Bills' search to find an offensive coordinator, according to Buffalo News' Vic Carucci.

Footballguys view: It's like Groundhogs Day for the Chiefs offense (thanks Alex Smith!). Keeping Childress only cements that notion further.

Chiefs | Alex Smith expected to remain starter    Mon Jan 16, 01:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith was given a vote of confidence Monday, Jan. 16, in regards to holding onto the starting job in 2017.

Footballguys view: There was some slight buzz about the team making a switch to Nick Foles in 2017. That's not the case according to Andy Reid. He told reporters: 'Do I still think we can win with Alex? Yeah, we were right there.'

Chiefs | Tamba Hali to play in 2017    Mon Jan 16, 11:44 AM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali plans to return and play in 2017, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Hali may not be the player he used to be, but he can still get pressure on the quarterback in a part-time role. In 2016, Hali had just 3.5 sacks but he logged 43 quarterback pressures on 596 snaps.

Chiefs | Five catches for Travis Kelce    Mon Jan 16, 01:25 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Travis Kelce had five catches for 77 yards in an 18-16 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Kelce did most of his damage early in the game. He was quiet for about two and a half quarters, then he made his presence felt with a personal foul penalty. Kelce's disappearing act certainly didn't help the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill limited in loss    Mon Jan 16, 01:16 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill was held to three rushing attempts for 18 yards and four catches for 27 yards in an 18-16 loss Sunday, Jan. 15, to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Hill is dangerous every time he touches the ball, and the Steelers had their hands full defending him as a runner, receiver and return man. He did get open deep once where QB Alex Smith wasn't able to find him for a play that would've resulted in six.
