Chiefs | John Dorsey no longer general manager     Thu Jun 22, 04:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey was relieved of his duties Thursday, June 22.

Footballguys view: This is a bit shocking. Given that it seemed like the Chiefs were making very specific moves (dumping WR Jeremy Maclin, moving up to draft QB Patrick Mahomes), it made sense to think the front office was stable. Clearly something was going on, and perhaps Andy Reid was the one in the driver's seat. It will be interesting to see who the new general manager is.

Chiefs | Andy Reid signs extension    Thu Jun 22, 03:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid signed a contract extension Thursday, June 22. Details of the extension were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have been to the playoffs in three of the four years Reid has been their coach. He sports a 43-21 record overall in four seasons. With rookie QB Patrick Mahomes set to take over for Alex Smith in the future (near future?), we should see the Chiefs have a more exciting and downfield passing attack with Reid calling the shots.

Chiefs | Dee Ford had quiet second half    Wed Jun 21, 06:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford recorded 10 sacks in his first nine games in 2016 but failed to record a sack in the final seven games of the regular season.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Ford can be more effective as the season goes on. With Justin Houston back at full strength, the Chiefs should be able to get after the passer early and often.

Chiefs | Andy Reid confident in offense    Tue Jun 20, 03:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley is just one piece of a young offensive group that has given head coach Andy Reid confidence despite the loss of Baltimore Ravens WR Jeremy Maclin. 'We have a lot of talent right here to do whatever we need to do,' Reid said. Conley himself is ready to take on a leadership role. 'You have to be a good listener [in order to lead], and I got a lot of time being able to watch and listen, and I think that's the way you help these younger guys is you just pay attention,' Conley said.

Footballguys view: Maclin had a poor 2016, so how much his departure really matters for this group is debatable. That said, getting the run game back on track and a third option to Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill is critical. We don't expect Conley to be more than the fourth or fifth option in the passing offense, and Fantasy GMs seem to feel the same as his ADP is a very deep 271 overall.

Chiefs | Demarcus Robinson on the rise    Sat Jun 17, 12:03 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Demarcus Robinson has had a good offseason, according to head coach Andy Reid. 'He can go after it,' Reid said. 'He can run, and he can do the short stuff, too. His strength coming in was that he was good after the catch wherever you get it to him.'

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Florida in 2016, Robinson has vertical talent as a pass-catcher. He goes deep and does a good job tracking passes over his shoulder. Robinson may not do much with Alex Smith under center, but keep an eye on the chemistry he can establish with rookie gunslinger Patrick Mahomes.

Chiefs | Alex Smith already locked in    Fri Jun 16, 11:01 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has 'started back faster' in OTAs than ever before, according to assistant head coach Brad Childress.

Footballguys view: That's a great sign for Smith as he has 2017 first-round pick Patrick Mahomes behind him on the depth chart. This is likely his last season with the Chiefs as Mahomes is groomed to be the quarterback of the future. In fact, we won't be shocked if Mahomes sees a bit of time on the field this year.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes focusing on learning, consistency during minicamp    Thu Jun 15, 03:38 PM

Josh Tolentino of the Kansas City Star reports Chiefs rookie QB Patrick Mahomes believes he's shown consistent improvement since organized team activities began a couple weeks ago. "(Today) was a progression and I just want to keep trying to getting better every single day." Mahomes said. "It's all about just putting these good days back to back and not having bad days."

Footballguys view: Mahomes is destined to be a backup for now. There are rumblings he could replace Alex Smith sooner rather than later...so keep that in mind. The Chiefs have to be happy their quarterback of the future is looking solid in shorts and a t-shirt.

Chiefs | Parker Ehinger unlikely for camp    Thu Jun 15, 02:45 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OG Parker Ehinger (knee) is not expected to be ready for training camp, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce should be ready for camp    Thu Jun 15, 02:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (shoulder) has a 'pretty good chance' of being ready for training camp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Kelce is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and it was originally believed that he would not be healthy enough for training camp.

Footballguys view: This is a great sign. Kelce will continue to be the main force in the offense and we expect him to be one of the top tight ends in fantasy this season.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware injures hamstring    Tue Jun 13, 11:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (hamstring) suffered a minor hamstring injury during practice Tuesday, June 13.

Footballguys view: Ware can't afford to miss much time with rookie Kareem Hunt added. The Chiefs are going to use a form of RBBC, but Ware could be the lead back if he wins the job over Hunt in camp.

Chiefs | No knee problems for Justin Houston    Tue Jun 13, 10:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston said he knee is feeling good and that he is not dealing with any swelling in the knee.

Footballguys view: Houston has been bothered by knee problems each of the last two years and has been limited to 16 games total during that time. One of the best pass rushers in the league when healthy, Houston could easily post double-digit sacks in 2017.

Chiefs | No kick returns for Tyreek Hill    Mon Jun 12, 02:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill will not be returning kickoffs this season, according to special teams coordinator Dave Toub. Toub and the Chiefs view Hill as too valuable of a wide receiver in light of free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin's (Chiefs) release. Hill will remain the Chiefs' punt returner, however.

Footballguys view: Head coach Andy Reid has already said that managing Hill's workload won't be an issue. Reid has managed similar players in former Philadelphia Eagles RB Brian Westbrook and Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR DeSean Jackson.

Chiefs | Chris Conley pegged for WR2 role    Thu Jun 8, 08:38 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley will play the 'X' receiver, which is a possession receiver role in head coach Andy Reid's offense. Conley said he has moved around the last two practices and played some of the 'Z' receiver role.

Footballguys view: While he could be the No. 2 receiver in terms of position, Conley has a lot of other people ahead of him in the pecking order. Tyreek Hill is the top dog here along with Travis Kelce. Everyone else is just fighting over scraps and until we see how that shakes out, value is at a minimum.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill to get first dibs at 'Z' spot    Thu Jun 8, 12:41 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill will 'likely' get the first crack at replacing free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) at the 'Z' position, the spotlight receiver spot in head coach Andy Reid's West Coast offense.

Footballguys view: In his first year, Hill was the No. 15 fantasy receiver in 2016. His combined yardage production as a hybrid runner-receiver opened things up for the Chiefs and they embraced a creative side of their offense to utilize and maximize him. He's currently coming off the board as the 25th wide receiver and the 58th player taken over all. You have to weight the price tag, but he seems like his upside is worth it.

Chiefs | Tevin Jones signed by Chiefs    Mon Jun 5, 04:19 PM

Free-agent WR Tevin Jones (Texans) was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, June 5, according to his agent.

Footballguys view: Jones takes the spot of Jeremy Maclin on the roster. Undrafted out of Memphis in 2016, Jones appeared in 51 career games for the Tigers, including 27 starts. His college numbers aren't something to write home about (1,215 career receiving yards and 9 touchdowns total). However, Jones is 6'2" 225 pounds and can work the sidelines. He's a long-shot to make the roster...no matter what team he's playing for.

Chiefs | Kareem Hunt signs rookie deal    Mon Jun 5, 03:13 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt signed his four-year rookie deal Monday, June 5. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hunt has a no-nonsense rushing style and can make his living between the tackles. He's not a bruiser, but Hunt knows how to find room to run in cramped quarters. Hunt has a nice spin move he'll use effectively at the second level of the defense. He can also be used as a receiver out of the backfield. Hunt will compete with Spencer Ware for the top spot on the Chiefs depth chart.

Chiefs | Demarcus Robinson, Albert Wilson could start    Sun Jun 4, 06:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WRs Demarcus Robinson and Albert Wilson are considered the leading candidates for the starting receiver job opposite WR Chris Conley, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Tyreek Hill is the Chiefs WR to get excited about...not Robinson, Wilson or Conley. We'll watch their status in training camp in deep leagues, but most fantasy players need to concern themselves with the primary pieces of the passing attack in KC - Hill and TE Travis Kelce.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill unlikely to start    Sun Jun 4, 06:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill likely will not be one of the starting wide receivers in 2017 but will see plenty of playing time as a receiver and a running back.

Footballguys view: Hill may not be one of the starters, but his role will still be large and his fantasy stock got a big boost with the release of Maclin. Fantasy owners should consider Hill a WR2/flex option with the big-play ability to make your fantasy week in one play. He's got a current ADP of WR22 (4.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Alex Smith talks Jeremy Maclin    Sat Jun 3, 09:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said he was expecting free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) to be his No. 1 receiver again this season and was 'shocked' by Maclin's release. 'For us, we have to move on a roll as a group,' Smith said. 'We obviously wish Jeremy well wherever he lands, and he'll land on his feet.'

Footballguys view: It was certainly a shocking move to both those inside the building and most all of us outside the facility. Maclin was slowed by injury last year and was outplayed by breakout player Tyreek Hill, but he might have been able to bounce back this season if healthy. The possibility that Maclin will never be the speed guy he used to be is there, but his veteran savvy could come in handy with a new team. We think a team like the Eagles, Lions, Patriots or Raiders might be interested.

Chiefs | Chris Conley's role increasing?    Fri Jun 2, 10:19 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley and WR Tyreek Hill should become Kansas City's top two receivers in 2017 following the release of WR Jeremy Maclin, according to beat writer Terez A. Paylor.

Footballguys view: That's the player who gets the biggest bump with the release of Maclin. Conley is not yet a crisp route runner, but he can catch contested passes regularly and he's got the concentration to work the sidelines. He should get the starting nod opposite Hill in 2017.

Chiefs | WR Jeremy Maclin released    Fri Jun 2, 08:56 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have released WR Jeremy Maclin. "I'd like to thank Jeremy for his effort and dedication the past two seasons," Chiefs General Manager John Dorsey said. "I have great respect for all players, which makes decisions like these very difficult, but we felt it was in the best interest of our club moving forward to part ways at this time. We wish Jeremy the best as he continues his career."

Footballguys view: Wow...we weren't expecting this. Maclin was set to count $12.4 million against the cap in 2017. This move saves the Chiefs $10 million, and they'll have to carry $2.4 million in dead money according to OverTheCap.com. Maclin may have lost a step, and injuries held him to just 536 receiving yards in 2016. The emergence of Tyreek Hill allows the team to make this move, but they're still thin at the position. We could see Chris Conley step into Maclin's vacated position as a starter opposite Hill.

Chiefs | Tyler Bray could remain backup QB    Fri May 26, 11:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Bray will have a chance to remain the backup quarterback despite the presence of QB Patrick Mahomes, head coach Andy Reid said Thursday, May 25.

Footballguys view: Bray has a big arm but struggles with control (think a poor man's version of Derek Anderson). Mahomes is the future of the franchise, but he should sit this year behind Alex Smith with the idea that he'll take over in 2018. Bray is a career backup, and we're a bit surprised he's been able to hang on this long in KC.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller finally healthy?    Wed May 24, 10:26 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller reportedly looks as 'healthy and spry as he has in years,' according to a source.

Footballguys view: Spiller's 1,000 yard season (2012) is a distant memory, and he certainly hasn't looked like his old self in years. If he's back to full strength, there's no guarantee the veteran will make the final roster. Spiller is going to compete with Charcandrick West for the no3 spot on the depth chart behind Spencer Ware and Kareem Hunt.

Chiefs | Kareem Hunt to be the top back?    Sat May 20, 12:37 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt will lead the team in rushing and be the leading receiver among the running backs, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation as Hunt was one of our favorite rookie RBs in this draft class. He can run with power, although he's not a guy who just wants to bull over defenders. Hunt can make people miss, and he's capable as a receiver too. The Chiefs will use a RBBC, but Hunt may be the lead back in that group which includes guys like SPencer Ware and Charcandrick West.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson remains on track    Sun May 14, 04:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') said he remains on schedule in his recovery and hopes to be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Johnson is the heart and soul of the Chiefs defense, and when he's on the field he's always around the ball. This is the second time Johnson has had an Achilles' injury, so expect the team to take it easy on him in training camp.

Chiefs | Several roster moves made by Chiefs    Tue May 9, 02:13 PM

Undrafted free-agents RB Devine Redding (Indiana) and WR Jamari Staples (Louisville) were signed by the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, May 9. WR Anas Hasic, TE Wyatt Houston, FB Will Ratelle and RB Kelvin Taylor were waived in corresponding moves.

Footballguys view: Staples is a player we'll monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. He's a physical player who isn't afraid to go over the middle. Staples has the size to absorb a hit, hang onto the rock and go for yards after the catch. The Chiefs have added talent to their WR corps, so Staples is more likely bound for the practice squad in 2017 if he can impress in camp.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware still likely to start    Tue May 9, 09:53 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is likely to start and see the majority of the work as the featured back, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs added talent to the backfield when Kareem Hunt (Toledo) was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. Hunt is a big back with good vision and a compact frame that makes him tough to bring down. Ware has the experience advantage, and he's likely to be the starter at the beginning of the season. We could see Hunt make a run at the starting job later in the year. Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller will likely work as change-of-pace backs.

Chiefs | Alex Smith was consulted before draft    Mon May 8, 11:49 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith spoke to Chiefs management twice before the team selected QB Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs kept Smith in the loop, but they drafted Mahomes to eventually replace the veteran. We think Mahomes sits and learns this year behind Smith. After the 2017 season, all of Smith's guaranteed money has been paid. We could see Mahomes take over in a year.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes hitting the books    Sun May 7, 09:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said he studied his playbook all night when he received it Friday, May 5, and head coach Andy Reid said the toughest part of Mahomes' transition to the NFL will be 'getting the verbiage down and the formations' for the offense.

Footballguys view: Mahomes has a robust system to learn, but he's got time as most expect him to sit a year behind Alex Smith. The gunslinger from Texas Tech is in a perfect system for his skill set, and Reid should be able to craft an exciting offense around his young passer. Mahomes has supreme confidence in his ability, and the Chiefs potentially have a franchise quarterback in the making.

Chiefs | Jehu Chesson a red zone weapon?    Sun May 7, 09:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jehu Chesson said his mentality is to 'win when the ball is in the air,' and he expects to catch plenty of deep passes and jump balls in the red zone.

Footballguys view: Chesson has great 'my ball' mentality, and that's something that could help him shine in the red zone. He's got the size (6'3" 204 pounds) to help him box out defenders near pay dirt. Chesson also has the athletic ability to contort his body in order to make difficult catches. He's not a burner by any means, and his route running needs work but there are ways to get production out of the rookie from Michigan.

Kansas City Chiefs fourth-round WR Jehu Chesson (Michigan), fifth-round LB Ukeme Eligwe (Georgia Southern) and sixth-round S Leon McQuay III (USC) signed their four-year rookie contracts Saturday, May 6.

Footballguys view: Chesson is an interesting player to monitor. The big receiver was a standout for the Wolverines, but a knee injury in 2015 (and an extended recovery) caused his production to dip. He's not going to blow past anybody, but Chesson is big (6'3" 205 pounds) and with his large wingspan he can win at the catch point consistently.

Seattle Seahawks RB Kelvin Taylor was claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, May 5.

Footballguys view: The son of former Jaguars great Fred Taylor, Kelvin has bounced around the league to now three teams in just a little over a year. A sixth-round pick of the 49ers in 2016, Taylor gives the Chiefs more depth behind Spencer Ware, Kareem Hunt, Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller. He'll be hard pressed to make the 53-man roster.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford has been working with some pass rush specialists this offseason to improve his technique, according to general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey said he wants to see continual growth from Ford in 2017.
