Chiefs | Sammy Watkins returning to Chiefs    Fri Apr 3, 08:07 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins (Chiefs) restructured his contract Friday, April 3, which was a one-year deal worth $9 million and could reach $16 million with incentives. The move creates $5 million in salary cap space.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs needed that cap space in a bad way. Before this, they only had $177 in cap space. Now, they'll be closer to being able to sign a draft class (around $10 million). Watkins played in 14 regular season games last year, compiling 52 catches for 673 yards and three touchdowns. That was good for WR5 production in standard-scoring leagues. However, in the postseason he was money - catching 14 passes for 288 yards and one touchdown in three games. We'll see if he can carry that momentum over to the 2020 regular season.

Chiefs | Jordan Ta'amu to KC a done deal    Thu Apr 2, 11:58 PM

Updating a previous report, former XFL St. Louis BattleHawks QB Jordan Ta'amu officially signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, April 2.

Footballguys view: Ta'amu was impressive as the starter for the Battlehawks in the shortened XFL season. He's athletic and can be used as a runner or perhaps even gadget player if needed. Ta'amu is a work in progress as a passer but he's got a good arm and the RPO action gets him some better looks than some traditional pocket passers. We'll be keeping track of him but only super deep dynasty formats.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams tied Peyton Barber for the third-lowest average in rushing yards before contact (1.3), but he also finished in a tie for first with Derrick Henry (3.2) for the most rushing yards after contact.

Footballguys view: Williams can work well in the high-powered Chiefs offense. He's an intent runner who wastes little motion when running the rock. We're excited to see what he can do in 2020 to build on his 2019 Super Bowl season.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes more comfortable in 2019    Sun Mar 29, 06:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes was hurried 54 times in 2019 - a significant drop from a league-high 121 times in 2018.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is playing at a level that few can match. That comfort level with the offense should just continue to get stronger with the more experience that he gets.

Unrestricted free-agent WR Demarcus Robinson (Chiefs) will re-sign with the Kansas City Chiefs on a one-year deal, a source said Saturday, March 28. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce in rare company    Thu Mar 26, 10:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce recorded 1,229 receiving yards in 2019, becoming only the fifth tight end in NFL history to top 1,000 yards four times in his career. However, he is the only one ever to do so in four consecutive seasons.

Footballguys view: Kelce is in rare company because he's a rare tight end. The Chiefs are set to keep making Super Bowl runs for years to come and Kelce will be a big part of what they do on offense because he is so difficult to stop.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes says on an upcoming episode of the HBO series The Shop: Uninterrupted, that he didn't truly learn how to read opposing defenses until the second half of the 2019 season.

Footballguys view: That's the scary thing; Mahomes has not yet played his best football. If he continues to grow as a passer then all single-season records are in trouble. Mahomes keeps the Chiefs in a Super Bowl window for the next five years if not more.

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent RB LeSean McCoy is not expected to return to the Chiefs in 2020. The Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers are two potential landing spots.

Footballguys view: McCoy had some of his best years with the Eagles and could give them veteran depth behind Miles Sanders. The Chargers could use a veteran behind Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson as they move on from Melvin Gordon. There are also rumblings that the Lions would be interested in McCoy to serve as a mentor to Kerryon Johnson.

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent DE Chris D. Jones will receive the franchise tag, according to sources. The team has him in their long-term plans and hopes to strike a deal.

Footballguys view: Even with the uncertainty about the new CBA affecting tags, the Chiefs have clarity that they want to keep their best defensive lineman no matter the terms of the CBA it will be applied under. One of the biggest names in free agency is going to stay with his team in 2020, and likely beyond.

Chiefs | Kansas City intrigued by Anthony McFarland    Wed Feb 26, 09:11 PM

University of Maryland RB Anthony McFarland told reporters that the Kansas City Chiefs have 'paid a lot of attention to him' at the NFL Combine this week. McFarland reportedly met with the Chiefs on the first night of the combine, and he is expected to meet with their running backs coach later this week.

Footballguys view: We're intrigued by McFarland too. He's quick and explosive on the field and can toy with defenders in the open field. McFarland has breakaway speed and can rip off a field-flipping run anytime he touches the ball. In 2019, McFarland had a high-ankle sprain that led to bad tape. If healthy, he could be a great weapon on an explosive offense like the Chiefs.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes (knee) isn't expected to require offseason surgery on his previously dislocated kneecap, according to head coach Andy Reid Tuesday, Feb. 25.

Footballguys view: Mahomes missed some time last year after sustaining the injury in a game against the Broncos. He was able to come back with a vengeance and lead his team to a Super Bowl championship. No surgery is a great sign, and Mahomes will be once again a favorite of Fantasy GMs and one of the best quarterbacks in the league.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins will likely have to rework his deal in order to return to the team, according to general manager Brett Veach. Watkins is expected to make $14 million next season.

Footballguys view: Watkins has a cap hit of $14 million but there is zero remaining in dead money. The Chiefs can cut Watkins and save $14 million, and that would nearly double their current salary cap space. We'll see if Watkins agrees to a pay cut or if he stands his ground and gets released.

Chiefs | Gerhig Dieter staying in Kansas City    Tue Feb 11, 04:35 PM

Free-agent WR Gehrig Dieter (Chiefs) signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, Feb. 11, after finishing the 2019-20 season on the practice squad.

Footballguys view: Dieter was signed as a priority free agent out of Alabama after the 2017 NFL draft. He was an over-aged prospect at Alabama and played at three different colleges (SMU, Bowling Green) before landing with the Crimson Tide. Dieter was a special teams player for Alabama, and that's what he's been for the Chiefs. We'll monitor him, mainly because he's on the Chiefs offense, but only in super crazy deep dynasty formats.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes deal possible after draft    Fri Feb 7, 09:18 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes' most likely window for a contract extension is sometime after the NFL draft.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have Mahomes under control for the next two seasons but there is no reason to wait. Instead, they need to get a deal done that makes Mahomes the highest-paid player in league history. So long as he stays healthy, the price is only going to go up for the superstar quarterback.

Chiefs | Sammy Watkins pay cut not likely    Thu Feb 6, 01:46 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins isn't likely to accept a pay cut from his $14 million salary if he were to be asked, in the opinion of ESPN NFL analyst Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Watkins said during Super Bowl week that he didn't know if he was going to continue playing in 2020. After the Super Bowl win, Watkins is raving about continuing to play for the Chiefs..although he did say he might skip some offseason workouts for mental health reasons. He's on the books for $14 million and the Chiefs will likely try to massage that number down.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Sammy Watkins said he plans to play next season but may skip some offseason workouts for his mental health and to spend time with his family.

Free-agent QB Kyle Shurmur (Chiefs), WR Jody Fortson (Chiefs), TE Nick Keizer (Chiefs), LB Emmanuel Smith (Chiefs), DT Braxton Hoyett (Chiefs), RB Elijah McGuire (Chiefs), DT Devaroe Lawrence (Browns), CB Chris Lammons (Dolphins) and RB Mike Weber (Chiefs) signed Reserve/Future contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, Feb. 4. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We'll keep an eye on Weber and McGuire in super deep dynasty formats. Weber was a seventh-round pick out of Ohio State for the Dallas Cowboys in the 2019 NFL draft. A knee injury suffered in May slowed him down and he didn't make the 53-man roster out of training camp. McGuire is a fine all-purpose runner who can shine as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He was a sixth-round pick for the Jets when he came out of Louisiana in 2017.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes joins elite club    Mon Feb 3, 11:29 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes joined Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger and New England Patriots QB Tom Brady as the only quarterbacks to win a Super Bowl before the age of 25. Both Roethlisberger and Brady have gone on to win multiple titles in their careers.

Footballguys view: Mahomes is likely to win multiple championships as well. If the Chiefs play things right, they could be building a dynasty with Mahomes leading the way. They have an opportunity to be Super Bowl contenders for a decade so long as Mahomes is their quarterback. They should give him a new contract that makes him the highest-paid player in NFL history, but they do have him under contract for the next two seasons.

Chiefs | Kansas City wins Super Bowl LIV    Sun Feb 2, 10:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes completed 26 of his 42 passes for 286 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, and he rushed nine times for 29 yards and a touchdown in a 31-20 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV Sunday, Feb. 2. RB Damien Williams rushed 17 times for 104 yards and a touchdown and caught four passes for 29 yards and a score. WR Tyreek Hill caught nine of his 16 targets for 105 yards, WR Sammy Watkins hauled in five passes for 98 yards, and TE Travis Kelce caught all six of his targets for 43 yards and a touchdown. SS Bashaud Breeland finished with a team-high seven tackles, including two tackles for loss, and a pass defensed.

Footballguys view: Mahomes was cold for three and a half quarters, but a third and long conversion against a tired 49ers pass rush seemed to light the fuse. Williams had a strong finish to the game with a clinching score, and Watkins redeemed himself after a quiet season except for a huge Week 1. Kelce was also important when the offense needed a conversion. The Chiefs completed a thrilling postseason that saw them come back from double digit deficits in every game.

Kansas City Chiefs RB LeSean McCoy likely will be inactive as a healthy scratch and won't play in Super Bowl LIV, sources said Saturday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: McCoy is simply not the same player he used to be. He hasn't done much for the Chiefs down the stretch as they make the run to what they hope is a Super Bowl championship. The Chiefs move forward in this game with Damien Williams as their lead back and Darwin Thompson as a backup running back.
