Chiefs | KC selects Chris Jones 37th overall    Fri Apr 29, 07:38 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs selected Mississippi State DT Chris D. Jones with the No. 37 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Jones is a bit inconsistent, but with Dontari Poe in the last year of a contract, the team needs to look for potential replacements.

Chiefs | Knile Davis could be moved    Wed Apr 27, 08:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis is being shopped to other teams.

Footballguys view: Davis had a few shining moments in the past and his size/speed combination is rare, but he lacks the vision to be more than a backup on his likely new team. If the Chiefs can't get a pick for him, he might get released with three running backs under contract ahead of him.

Chiefs | Paul Fanaika waived    Tue Apr 26, 04:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OG Paul Fanaika was placed on no-recall waivers Tuesday, April 26.

Chiefs | Signing Mike Williams    Mon Apr 25, 04:03 PM

Free-agent WR Mike Williams (Bills) is signing a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, April 25, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams is a big/physical receiver, but injuries and off-field problems have made him bounce around the league since coming into the NFL as a fourth-round pick in 2010. The Chiefs are one of the most WR-needy teams in the league, so Williams is worth watching if he can regain the form he showed earlier in his career.

Chiefs | Justin March-Lillard praised    Fri Apr 22, 09:27 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin March-Lillard (knee) said his rehab is going well, and he was called an 'up-and-coming young linebacker' by LB Derrick Johnson, who consider March-Lillard his protégé.

Chiefs | Justin Houston will play in 2016    Fri Apr 22, 12:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) was given assurances by doctors that he will play in 2016, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: Houston had surgery to repair an ACL/LCL injury earlier this year. It sounds like he's ahead in the recovery process and may be available to the team later in the season. When he returns, Houston is unlikely to be at full strength. Without Houston, we'll see Dee Ford get a larger role.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles has been running    Tue Apr 19, 01:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been running but isn't cutting in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. 'I'll be ready,' Charles said of being back out there for training camp. 'I can't wait.'

Footballguys view: Charles is going to be one of the best backs in the league again this year. However, his workload could be cut into by Charcandrick West. Fantasy owners need to recognize that West is too talented to be left on the sideline, and this will impact the fantasy value of both.

Chiefs | Two sign tenders    Mon Apr 18, 05:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs exclusive rights free-agent FS Daniel Sorensen and DE Nick X. Williams both signed their tender offers to return to the Chiefs Monday, April 18. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Chiefs | No OTAs for Jamaal Charles    Mon Apr 18, 02:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) said he probably won't participate in organized team activities, but he should be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Charles should be ready to go for training camp, and he'll once again be the lead back for the Chiefs. However, Charcandrick West is too talented to keep off the field. We'll see some sort of RBBC that features both RBs in 2016.

Chiefs | Big plays rare for De'Anthony Thomas     Fri Apr 15, 12:48 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR De'Anthony Thomas' longest play from scrimmage in 22 games is 36 yards, and he is averaging just 7.4 yards per catch.

Footballguys view: Thomas is not the player the Chiefs thought he would be. We're not expecting any sort of turnaround in 2016 or after that.

Chiefs | Justin Houston recovering nicely    Thu Apr 7, 01:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) posted an Instagram video of himself working out less than two months after he had surgery to 'fix' an injured anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. 'Show me someone doing this seven weeks after full ACL and LCL surgery, and I'll show you God's work. I hope y'all watching,' Houston wrote.

Footballguys view: They need Houston back, so this is good news. It's going to be quite the horse race in the West this year, and defense will be a huge part of Kansas City's success or failure against the Broncos, Raiders and Chargers.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson needs to prove himself    Wed Apr 6, 11:09 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson signed a three-year, $21 million deal in the offseason with a $5.25 million signing bonus. If age catches up to him, he might not make the $2 million skill guarantee he has awaiting him in 2017. He could be a one-and-done casualty after this season.

Chiefs | Jimmy Wilson agrees to terms    Fri Apr 1, 07:58 PM

Free-agent SS Jimmy Wilson (Chargers) agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, April 1, on a one-year deal, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Wilson was an ineffective starter for the Chargers, and that's why he was cut in December. He'll give the Chiefs veteran depth and can play slot corner if needed.

Chiefs | Charcandrick West contract details    Thu Mar 31, 02:50 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West was signed to a two-year contract extension worth $3.6 million with $2.35 million guaranteed.

Footballguys view: West will probably split time with Jamaal Charles, who is returning from an injury. We think down the road when Charles moves on, West will take over the lead position. At the moment with both players expected to have a significant role, they are no more than RB2s at best. If a clear-cut leader emerges, that guy will have RB1 value in all likelihood.

Chiefs | Knile Davis on the way out    Thu Mar 31, 12:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis is involved in active trade discussions that the team has been working on for several weeks.

Footballguys view: Davis is the odd man out after Jamaal Charles, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware. If the Chiefs can get value for him, they will. He's shown flashes of talent and could be an interesting starting back (and fantasy back) in 2016.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware contract details    Thu Mar 31, 12:32 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware received a two-year extension worth $3.6 million for 2017 and 2018. The deal can be worth up to $9.6 million based on yards and touchdowns, and he's guaranteed $2.5 million.

Footballguys view: He's likely to be a role player behind Charcandrick West and Jamaal Charles, a change of pace guy who gives the other two a breather. He's unlikely to have much - if any - value barring an injury.

Spencer Ware player page

Chiefs | Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware extended    Thu Mar 31, 12:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RBs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware are both signing contract extensions Thursday, March 31, after the two combined for more than 1,000 yards in 2015 after RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was out for the season. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: That leaves Knile Davis as a likely odd man out. West will split the load with Jamaal Charles while Ware is likely to be a change of pace guy. West might have some decent RB2 play, but Ware will be no more than a handcuff barring an injury.

Chiefs | De'Anthony Thomas not in trade talks    Tue Mar 29, 04:29 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR De'Anthony Thomas has not been involved in trade talks with the San Francisco 49ers, according to Chiefs general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: Why in the world would the 49ers want Thomas? He's yet to play a full season as a pro, and his skill set is not unique. Thomas is more of a slot receiver and part-time player than he is any sort of playmaker.

Chiefs | Justin Houston didn't have setback    Tue Mar 29, 04:28 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) did not re-injure his knee when he returned to action in the playoff win over the Houston Texans in January, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Houston had surgery to fix an ACL in his knee earlier this month. The impact pass-rusher was dealing with a hyperextended knee in the playoffs.

Chiefs | Husain Abdullah retires    Mon Mar 28, 01:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Husain Abdullah announced his retirement Monday, March 28. Health was the primary reason, as he suffered five concussions in his seven-year career.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Washington State in 2008, Abdullah worked hard to become a quality starter for the Vikings and the Chiefs. We'll continue to see more of these early retirements due to brain injuries and the long-term impact it can have on a player's life.

Chiefs | Paxton Lynch meeting with Chiefs    Thu Mar 24, 05:30 PM

Memphis QB Paxton Lynch will meet with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, March 25, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs might be looking past Alex Smith towards the future but we're not seeing them spend a first round pick on the position. As always, team visits usually mean nothing during the draft process, and that seems to be the case here.

Chiefs | Justin Houston progressing nicely    Tue Mar 22, 01:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) is making good progress in his rehab and is off crutches, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That's a bit of good news on a day that has been bad for Chiefs fans out there. Houston may be ready by the start of the regular season, but we imagine the Chiefs will limit his snaps if he's able to return.

Chiefs | Justin Houston out 6-12 months    Tue Mar 22, 10:34 AM

Updating an earlier report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) will be out six to 12 months after arthroscopic surgery on his anterior cruciate ligament in February.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Chiefs here. The recovery time puts Houston's availability around the start of the regular season. If (a big IF) he's ready by that point, the Chiefs should ease him in as a part-time player so they don't re-aggravate the injury.

Chiefs | Justin Houston had ACL work done    Tue Mar 22, 09:17 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) had his anterior cruciate ligament 'fixed' in February, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: The ACL wasn't torn, but it wasn't functioning the way it should. Reid said it was too early to tell if Houston would be ready for the start of the 2016 season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will be ready    Tue Mar 22, 09:16 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been working out at the team's facility and will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Charles played in five games last year before injuring his knee and missing the rest of the season. In 2016, Charles should get back his starting job but fantasy owners need to realize that Charcandrick West will also play a role. Filling in for an injured Charles, West proved last year that he's too good to keep off the field.

Chiefs | KC appealing Jeremy Maclin penalties    Mon Mar 21, 04:51 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have officially filed their appeal against the NFL's tampering rule, according to chairman Clark Hunt. The Chiefs were stripped of two draft picks and were fined for allegedly violating the league's anti-tampering policy in last year's pursuit of WR Jeremy Maclin during free agency. The two draft picks the Chiefs have lost are this year's third-round pick and next year's sixth-round pick.

Chiefs | Rod Streater joins Kansas City     Sat Mar 12, 02:29 PM

Free-agent WR Rod Streater (Raiders) signed a one-year deal worth up to $4.8 million with the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, March 12, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Injuries and inconsistencies have held Streater to just 10 catches over the last two years. If healthy, Streater could at least be a deep threat for the Chiefs thin WR corps.

The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to a two-year deal worth up to $12 million with DT Jaye Howard Wednesday, March 9, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Howard had a career-high 5.5 sacks last year for the Chiefs. They can move him all over the defensive line, and that's what they should do with him again this season.

Free-agent LB Derrick Johnson (Chiefs) re-signed to a three-year, $21 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Wednesday, March 9, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This deal could keep Johnson with the Chiefs his entire career. A leader on the defense, Johnson bounced back last year after an Achilles' injury cut his 2014 season short.

Chiefs | KC hit with tampering penalties    Wed Mar 9, 05:38 PM

Chiefs | Have made offer to Sean Smith    Mon Mar 7, 02:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent CB Sean Smith has received a conservative offer from the Chiefs. Details of the offer were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs had better offer more if they want to keep the big playmaker. Smith has a rare size/speed combination which allows him to cover large receivers downfield. He may land a new contract that pays him around $10 million annually.

Chiefs | Eric Berry to receive tag    Tue Mar 1, 02:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent SS Eric Berry will receive the franchise tag by the deadline Tuesday, March 1, but it's unclear if it'll be the franchise or transition tag. A non-exclusive franchise tag sits at $10.806 million for safeties this year. The transition tag would cost the Chiefs $9.116 million. Both sides are trying to hammer out a long-term deal before that, though.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles not going anywhere    Fri Feb 26, 01:20 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not be cut, according to general manager John Dorsey. 'He will be an important piece of this team moving forward,' Dorsey said.

Footballguys view: Why would he go anywhere? Dorsey said (again) that Charles is ahead in the recovery process as he works back from the knee injury that cut his 2015 season short. Charles will be the lead back, but team sources indicate that Charcandrick West did enough to earn a role on the offense too.

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent QB Chase Daniel is a candidate to return to the club in 2016 'at the right price', according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: It would be interesting to see Daniel get a shot somewhere, as he has shown flashes on occasion, but he's likely looking at another backup gig either in Kansas City or elsewhere.

Chiefs | Robert Griffin an option in KC?    Wed Feb 24, 01:17 PM

Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III is an option to be the backup quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Griffin's future is looking more like backup than potential starter, but if he is going to get his mind right and obtain buy in from his coach and teammates, a year holding a clipboard could be good for him. Chase Daniel would leave in free agency (to Philadelphia?) in this scenario.
