Chiefs | Nick Foles' option declined     Thu Mar 9, 01:12 PM

Updating an ongoing story, Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent QB Nick Foles' $6.4 million contract option was declined Thursday, March 9.

Footballguys view: Foles could get a shot at starting again down the road but for now he will hold Alex Smith's clipboard, barring injury. We all think Smith is somewhat limited but we're not sure Foles will ever recapture what he showed back in 2013 so it's unlikely the former Eagle and Ram will challenge for the starting job.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson tendered    Thu Mar 9, 12:27 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson received a one-year, $1.797 million tender Wednesday, March 9.

Footballguys view: Wilson has had moments but hasn't seen a high volume of targets over a sustained period of time. He has decent hands but not much else though, so we see the ceiling on him as limited.

Chiefs | Curtis Samuel talks with Chiefs    Sun Mar 5, 06:20 PM

Ohio State RB/WR Curtis Samuel met with the Kansas City Chiefs at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: Samuel would be yet another moveable matchup piece for the Chiefs offense. He's best used in open space and can break defenders ankles with his quickness. Samuel also has multiple years experience returning kicks.

Chiefs | Kansas City meets with several QB prospects    Sun Mar 5, 06:20 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs met with North Carolina QB Mitchell Trubisky, Clemson QB Deshaun Watson, Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes, Pittsburgh QB Nate Peterman and Miami (Fla.) QB Brad Kaaya at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs could use a young passer to groom behind Alex Smith. This could be the year they select a quarterback with a premium pick. Depending on how the draft shakes out, we could see the Chiefs looking at someone like Mahomes near the end of the first round.

Chiefs | Kansas City to talk with DeShone Kizer    Fri Mar 3, 07:16 PM

Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer said he is scheduled to talk with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, March 3.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (shoulder) recently underwent offseason shoulder surgery, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles failed physical    Tue Feb 28, 09:03 PM

Updating a previous story, Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) was released Tuesday, Feb. 28, with a 'failed physical' designation.

Footballguys view: The health of his knees will determine how many are lined up to sign the veteran back. He could still work as a change-of-pace back with the right team. We could see a team like the Cowboys adding him.

  Chiefs | C.J. Spiller's contract details    Tue Feb 28, 03:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller's deal is one year length and worth $980,000. He will earn a $55,000 bonus if he makes it to the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Spiller is no lock to make the 53-man roster. If he can stay healthy and play at his best, Spiller is looking at being a backup, reserve runner behind Spencer Ware. The Chiefs could use him as a receiver out of the backfield, but his part-time role would not have much fantasy relevance.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles released    Tue Feb 28, 03:13 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was released Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Footballguys view: This move was expected as the Chiefs need cap space and releasing Charles frees up $6.2 million. Charles is reportedly healthy, but he's only played eight games over the last two years and hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2012. We feel teams like the Cowboys could show interest in Charles as a change-of-pace back.

Chiefs | Eric Berry lands huge six-year deal    Tue Feb 28, 02:03 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs re-signed impending free-agent S Eric Berry (Chiefs) to six-year, $78 million contract on Tuesday, Feb. 28, making him the highest-paid safety in the NFL. For ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal contains $40 million guaranteed, including a $20 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs finally take care of their guy. Berry overcame cancer to return to the football field, and he's a 'glue guy' in that locker room. Berry tied a career high with four interceptions last year, and he's constantly graded positively as a run defender.

Chiefs | Chiefs CEO backs Alex Smith as starter    Mon Feb 27, 11:19 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CEO Clark Hunt reiterated what head coach Andy Reid has been saying throughout the offseason, that QB Alex Smith will continue to be the starting quarterback 'going into 2017.'

Footballguys view: That means they may not be a player in the Tony Romo sweepstakes. It also means they're stuck in Groundhog's Day with Smith as their starter. The Chiefs will be around the playoffs...they may even make the playoffs again. However, with Smith as the starter they can't be considered a true Super Bowl contender.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe still a tag candidate    Mon Feb 27, 07:09 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent DT Dontari Poe could still receive the franchise tag if the team is able to re-sign impending free-agent SS Eric Berry before the franchise tag deadline Wednesday, March 1.

Footballguys view: Getting Berry done before the franchise tag deadline allows the Chiefs to keep Poe around. Affording him is a different story as the team barely has any cap space at this time.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller signs with KC    Fri Feb 24, 10:08 AM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Jets) signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Feb. 24.

Footballguys view: Spiller can work as a change-of-pace back for the Chiefs. We should see the Chiefs utilize a RBBC with Spencer Ware as the lead back. Spiller is no lock to make the team, but if he does then he'll work into that RBBC in a reserve role.

Chiefs | Tyler Bray eyes backup job    Thu Feb 23, 11:21 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Bray said he is eager to compete for the backup quarterback job in 2017, and general manager John Dorsey said Bray has 'deep knowledge' of the offense and the 'arm talent' to succeed.

Footballguys view: Bray has a big arm, but his accuracy, decision making and anticipation have always been a huge work in progress.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce a rare weapon    Sun Feb 19, 09:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce ranked second in the NFL with 655 yards after catch in 2016, and he was the only tight end to rank in the top 15 in the category.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs jumpstarted their passing game with Kelce and WR Tyreek Hill this year. Kelce's a TE1 with the upside to finish as the best fantasy tight end in 2017.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware consistent in 2016    Sun Feb 19, 03:45 PM

Chiefs | Nick Foles' option unlikely to be exercised    Wed Feb 15, 02:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles' 2017 option likely will not be picked up by the Chiefs, which will make him an unrestricted free agent.

Footballguys view: The option was worth around $6.4 million according to reports, but the Chiefs are in desperate need of cap space. They have less than $1 million in cap space at this time, and they want to find a way to get new contracts for Eric Berry and Dontari Poe this offseason. Foles looked good in limited playing time with the Chiefs last year, and he's likely to get a chance to compete for a starting job (somewhere) in 2017.

Chiefs | De'Anthony Thomas likely gone    Mon Feb 13, 10:42 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR De'Anthony Thomas is likely to be traded or released with the emergence of WR Tyreek Hill in the roles Thomas was drafted for, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Thomas has not played up to his potential, and the Chiefs will wisely move on. A fourth-round pick in 2014, Thomas has only 48 career catches in three seasons as a part-time player.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles expected to be released    Sun Feb 12, 05:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is expected to be released this offseason in order for the team to create salary cap space.

Footballguys view: Charles has a $6.1 million cap number in 2017, and there's no dead money remaining on his contract. The Chiefs have only $4 million in cap space, and they want to sign both DT Dontari Poe and S Eric Berry to long-term deals. Releasing Charles is a virtual lock.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe may be too expensive for Chiefs    Fri Feb 10, 04:18 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe may be too expensive for the Chiefs to re-sign if they re-sign impending free-agent SS Eric Berry before Poe.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs would like to re-sign both, but Berry is believed to be the team's top priority at this point. The team is strapped for cap space with only $4 million to work with at this time. They'll move around some money to get at least one of these guys signed, but signing both is likely a pipe dream.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles hopes to be ready for 2017    Thu Feb 9, 01:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is working hard in order to be ready for the 2017 season, according to general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey said he does not know what will happen in March but sees Charles as a member of the team at this point.

Footballguys view: The backfield didn't perform quite as well as we expected, so Charles might actually have a place when he returns. We see the backfield as a bit of a mess in that case, though Spencer Ware has the highest upside of the group.

Chiefs | GM backs Alex Smith as starter    Thu Feb 9, 01:50 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said QB Alex Smith will continue to be team's starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: There's no other option there right now, so barring a really high pick, we don't know who would challenge Smith. We think the team has to be thinking about their next signal caller. Smith is good enough to get them into the playoffs, but appears to fall short of what the Chiefs need to make a legitimate run at a championship.

Chiefs | Jah Reid may be released    Thu Feb 9, 12:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OT Jah Reid could be a cap casualty this offseason because the team would save $2.08 million in salary cap space. Reid played only 94 snaps this season.

Former Cincinnati Bengals QB Mike Kafka is being hired by the Kansas City Chiefs as an offensive quality control coach Tuesday, Feb. 7, according to a source.
