Chiefs | Eric Berry's return eminent?    Wed Aug 24, 01:11 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry still has not signed his franchise tender, but the team believes he could return soon and remain hopeful he'll be in uniform for Week 1. Head coach Andy Reid wants to get Berry in soon to see 'what kind of shape' the veteran is in.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali to be limited participant    Tue Aug 23, 12:44 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali (knee) is expected to practice on a limited basis now that he has been activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Hali will work back slowly as he prepares for the start of the regular season. With fellow pass-rusher Justin Houston out for the foreseeable future, the Chiefs could use Hali in a big way. He's not the same player he used to be, but Hali could snare around six sacks this while playing well as a run defender.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali off the PUP list    Mon Aug 22, 02:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali (knee) was taken off the Physically Unable to Perform list Monday, Aug. 22. He will practice Tuesday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: The veteran pass-rusher had his knee scoped back in February, but he's on track to play in Week 1. The Chiefs have wisely been cautious with Hali, and we think that continues with Hali playing no (or very limited) snaps in the preseason.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles unlikely this week    Mon Aug 22, 10:08 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is unlikely to play in the third preseason game, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles should practice more this week, however.

Footballguys view: We don't see the need to run Charles out there for any preseason game. The Chiefs have a deep and talented backfield with Charles, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. We think Charles should be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, and he should put up low-end RB1 numbers in 2016.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles practices in full    Thu Aug 18, 11:05 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) practiced in full Thursday, Aug. 18, for the first time. He won't play in the second preseason game, though.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him, even though they have an incredibly deep backfield. In fact, it could be that depth is influencing that decision as well, since they need to decide what to do with all their RBs. Getting Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Knile Davis some more burn could help them make a decision. Of course, the Chiefs know you can never have too many backs. The guy to own here is Charles as an RB1, but handcuffing him with West or Ware isn't a terrible idea.

Chiefs | Tyler Bray out of practice    Thu Aug 18, 09:54 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Bray (neck) is out of practice Thursday, Aug. 18.

Footballguys view: We assume Nick Foles will supplant him as the QB2 in Kansas City soon, and Bray, Aaron Murray and rookie Kevin Hogan are likely to be fighting for the final QB spot on the roster.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin sits out Wednesday    Wed Aug 17, 03:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin (groin) did not participate in practice Wednesday, Aug. 17, because of a groin injury.

Footballguys view: Maclin is considered day-to-day with this injury. Don't be surprised if they sit him for the Chiefs second preseason game. If healthy, we see Maclin as a mid-range WR2 for fantasy owners.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles does more work    Wed Aug 17, 12:02 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was limited Wednesday, Aug. 17, but he got through a larger workload than he did the previous day.

Footballguys view: Charles is on track to play Week 1, and while the team could use Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West to ease him in, he will have every chance to return his second-round draft pick value as long as he can handle it.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles returns    Tue Aug 16, 09:17 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, and he's participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: It appears that Charles is on schedule to resume his role as the lead back for the Chiefs in Week 1 against the Chargers. The team likes backups Charchandrick West and Spencer Ware a lot and could ease Charles in early in the season, but as long as he looks like the player he has been during his Hall of Fame level career, he'll be an easy RB1 in fantasy leagues again this year.

Chiefs | Charcandrick West day-to-day    Mon Aug 15, 06:27 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West (elbow) is considered day-to-day because of an elbow injury.

Footballguys view: West could play an important role as a change-of-pace back behind Jamaal Charles -- if healthy. Watch to see how his recovery goes with this elbow problem.

Chiefs | Charcandrick West holds his own    Sat Aug 13, 06:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West played behind RB Spencer Ware in the team's preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 13, but flashed on a 25-yard run and finished with 35 yards on four carries.

Footballguys view: West could play as a change-of-pace back behind starter Jamaal Charles. Using West in that role could help Charles stay healthy in 2016.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware caps first drive with TD    Sat Aug 13, 05:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware got the start with RB Jamaal Charles (knee) still on the Physically Unable to Perform list and did not disappoint in the team's preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 13, running for 24 yards on five carries and converting on a 1-yard plunge early in the first quarter.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented backup, and he would be a valuable fantasy asset if starter Jamaal Charles goes down with another injury. He's worth picking up as a late-round flier or to jock-block the Charles owner.

Chiefs | No timetable for Justin Houston    Wed Aug 10, 06:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said there is no timetable for LB Justin Houston's (knee) return, but the team may know more about his status in a few weeks.

Footballguys view: Alex Smith and the rest of the passing game could actually benefit from Houston's absence because the Chiefs will get in more high-scoring games. Smith's most productive stretch of his career came when Houston was out with an elbow injury in 2013.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali making progress    Wed Aug 10, 06:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali (knee) is taking part in linebacker movement drills and should be able to participate in practice in a few weeks, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: Hali needs to dig down and find his old game because the Chiefs are without Justin Houston for at least the early part of the season. If Hali can't generate some pressure the Chiefs defense will have to rely on Dee Ford to be their pass rushing stud.

Chiefs | GM hopeful about Jamaal Charles    Wed Aug 10, 04:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said he is hopeful that RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Dorsey was "optimistic" and so are we. Charles hasn't been taken off of the PUP yet, but he has come all the way back from ACL surgery before. The Chiefs have two strong backups in Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, so they might Charles back in to start the season. He's still worth a second-round pick and should return first-round value in PPR leagues once he's back up to speed.

Chiefs | Rod Streater filling in admirably    Sun Aug 7, 11:40 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Rod Streater has filled in admirably on the first-team offense for the injured WR Albert Wilson (calf). 'I think Rod's done a phenomenal job,' WR Jeremy Maclin said. 'We've asked him to play outside, we've moved him to the slot and I think he's a very intelligent guy. He's picked up the playbook really well.'

Footballguys view: Streater appears to be ahead of freakish 2015 third-round pick Chris Conley. He can also play the slot. We won't talk about him in fantasy leagues unless Maclin goes down, and maybe not even then, but Streater appears to be on track to be in the Chiefs top three receivers this year.

Chiefs | Alex Smith enjoying his best camp with KC    Sun Aug 7, 08:12 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has shown more willingness to throw downfield and improved decision-making overall, convincing his coaches he is enjoying the finest of his four training camps with the team, according to ESPN.com writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Smith could be in for a bigger year because the Chiefs will likely be in higher-scoring games while Justin Houston is out recovering from ACL surgery. One of the most productive stretches of his career came when Houston was out with an elbow injury in 2013.

Chiefs | Nick Foles terms    Thu Aug 4, 11:33 AM

Updating an earlier report, Kansas City Chiefs QB Nick Foles' contract is a one-year deal with a team option for a second year. He'll earn $1.75 million with incentives in 2016. His option for 2017 ranges between $6.75 million and $16 million based on 2016 performance.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting move for the Chiefs, but not shocking. We think Andy Reid is a guy who can get Foles back to where he was in 2013, if given a little time. Chase Daniel got signed away and clearly the other quarterbacks in camp aren't exciting the team. Again though, Reid grabbed Foles in the third round of the 2012 draft and we think he really is excited for him going forward. Foles is a handcuff for Alex Smith in fantasy, and that's all.

Chiefs | Knile Davis improved as pass catcher    Tue Aug 2, 09:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis has been working on his hands over the past few months, and feels confident he can be a threat down the field as well.

Footballguys view: Davis is a good bet to be released or traded for a late pick, so this kind of story can help increase his value to another team. The Chiefs have their backup RB situation locked down with Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill showing off his speed    Sat Jul 30, 09:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill has had a 'great' offseason and possesses the type of speed that worries defensive backs, QB Alex Smith said Saturday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Hill has a chance to take the roster spot that has been occupied by DeAnthony Thomas for a gadget play and return specialist contributor to the team.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware under the weather    Sat Jul 30, 09:44 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware (illness) did not practice Saturday, July 30, and head coach Andy Reid said he was sick.

Footballguys view: Ware is likely to be the backup behind Jamaal Charles. However, fellow reserve RB Charcandrick West will play a role behind Jamaal Charles even with Charles back and healthy this year. Ware may not see the field unless Charles is banged up again.

Chiefs | Justin Houston lands on PUP    Sat Jul 30, 05:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 30.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Chiefs superstar pass-rusher is a question mark to begin the regular season. He may begin the year in a limited role and get worked back into a larger role as the season rolls on.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali placed on PUP list    Sat Jul 30, 05:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Hali should be cleared for practice at some point during camp. The team can bring him off the PUP list at any time. With Justin Houston (knee) also recovering on the PUP list, the Chiefs need to be cautious with Hali.

Chiefs | Eric Berry planning lengthy holdout    Wed Jul 27, 09:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry appears ready to holdout through the preseason, as he is displeased with the team's inability to reach a long-term contract agreement with him this summer. Veterans are expected to report to training camp Friday, July 29, and head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, July 26, that he has communicated with Berry via text this summer but was uncertain of Berry's plans.

Footballguys view: Veteran skip camp, so this is no worry. Berry knows the defense, he's likely in great shape and he can step in during the preseason and be fine. We do think it's crazy he isn't signed to a long-term deal yet, but that may be coming. On the field, missing some practices won't hurt the savvy veteran.

Chiefs | Phillip Gaines fully practices    Wed Jul 27, 07:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, July 27, for the first time since he suffered his torn anterior cruciate ligament last season. Head coach Andy Reid said Gaines is the leading candidate to start at right cornerback this season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles placed on PUP    Wed Jul 27, 11:45 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Charles is going to get eased into action. This gives more opportunity for talented backups Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Reports indicate that Ware will actually be the backup to Charles. However, we've also heard that West is going to play a role in this offense--even with Charles healthy and starting. Stay dialed into this situation as camp/preseason rolls on.

Chiefs | Justin Houston may miss games    Tue Jul 26, 04:45 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) is expected to miss some time at the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Houston will not participate in training camp as he is still recovering from offseason knee surgery. While he may not begin the regular season on the PUP list, we could see Houston shut down for at least a couple of games to start the year. We'll know more about his progress as we get through the preseason.

Chiefs | Justin Houston unlikely for camp    Tue Jul 26, 04:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) is not expected to participate in training camp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Houston continues to recover from surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last year.

Chiefs | Eric Berry not reporting to camp    Tue Jul 26, 03:13 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry is not planning to report for the start of training camp. He has not signed his franchise tender offer at this point, so he will not be fined for missing camp.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs weren't able to sign Berry to a new long-term contract before the July 15th deadline, and now he's showing a bit of disapproval. The two sides can't work on a new deal until 2017, so Berry will have to sign his one-year franchise tender to play in 2016.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't be limited    Tue Jul 26, 11:22 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) workload won't be limited if he's healthy and returns to the player he was before his knee injury, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Charles will be the lead back for the Chiefs once again this year, but expect the team to use backup Charcandrick West as some sort of change-of-pace back. We like Charles as a top-10 fantasy RB this year, and West could perform like a RB4/flex option so long as Charles is healthy.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware active in passing game    Sat Jul 23, 08:50 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware caught lots of passes in OTAs, according to beat writer Terez A. Paylor.

Footballguys view: Ware is going to be part of an RBBC with Charcandrick West if Jamaal Charles goes down this year, and probably the more valuable part of the committee. There's a chance he could get more work in games with Charles than backups to the Hall of Fame level back have gotten in the past, but Ware will only have fantasy relevance this year if Charles misses time.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware considered the backup    Tue Jul 19, 06:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is viewed as the backup running back behind RB Jamaal Charles, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher. Teicher did say that Ware and RB Charcandrick West would both play if Charles was injured.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented runner who could easily carry the load for the Chiefs if necessary. We feel West is going to play a role--at least as a change-of-pace back behind Charles. If something were to happen to Charles, Ware could take over as the lead back with West continuing his valuable part-time play.

Chiefs | Kansas City still wants Eric Berry     Sat Jul 16, 12:49 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will play this season on a one-year deal, but general manager John Dorsey is hopeful that an extension beyond 2017 can be reached sometime next season.

Footballguys view: We're all Berry fans...no matter the team affiliation. He beat cancer, and Berry is an inspiration to all. It's a bit of a surprise that the Chiefs didn't find a way to get something done. We'll see if the two sides can work something out during the year.

Chiefs | No deal for Eric Berry    Fri Jul 15, 03:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will not agree to a long-term deal before the deadline Friday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: For the last week, we've seen reports that indicated nothing was going to get done. Berry is a player we can all cheer for since he beat cancer. The team just didn't have the cap space to make it happen, so Berry will play under the $10.8 million franchise tender in 2016.

Chiefs | Little progress made with Eric Berry    Fri Jul 15, 08:26 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry made very little progress in contract talks Thursday, July 14, and it's unlikely a long-term deal gets done Friday, July 15.

Footballguys view: We're a bit surprised more hasn't been done here. Berry will have to play on the one-year franchise tender, and he'll have a price tag in 2016 of $10.8 million in 2016.

Chiefs | Eric Berry still far apart in talks    Thu Jul 14, 11:12 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry isn't close in contract talks with the Chiefs, Thursday, July 14, but a deal hasn't been ruled out.

Footballguys view: Harrison Smith made a ton of cash in his last contract with the Vikings, and it would make sense that Berry - with more experience and a better track record - should see the same money. That said, nobody is more cash strapped than the Chiefs (with just over $200,000 left in cap space). If they rescinded Berry's tag, they would have $10.8 million to work with but Berry would be a free agent.
