Chiefs | Kareem Hunt to be the top back? Sat May 20, 12:37 AM
Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt will lead the team in rushing and be the leading receiver among the running backs, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.
|Footballguys view: Keep an eye on this situation as Hunt was one of our favorite rookie RBs in this draft class. He can run with power, although he's not a guy who just wants to bull over defenders. Hunt can make people miss, and he's capable as a receiver too. The Chiefs will use a RBBC, but Hunt may be the lead back in that group which includes guys like SPencer Ware and Charcandrick West.|

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson remains on track Sun May 14, 04:36 PM
Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') said he remains on schedule in his recovery and hopes to be ready for the start of training camp.
|Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Johnson is the heart and soul of the Chiefs defense, and when he's on the field he's always around the ball. This is the second time Johnson has had an Achilles' injury, so expect the team to take it easy on him in training camp.|

Chiefs | Several roster moves made by Chiefs Tue May 9, 02:13 PM
Undrafted free-agents RB Devine Redding (Indiana) and WR Jamari Staples (Louisville) were signed by the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, May 9. WR Anas Hasic, TE Wyatt Houston, FB Will Ratelle and RB Kelvin Taylor were waived in corresponding moves.
|Footballguys view: Staples is a player we'll monitor in super deep dynasty leagues. He's a physical player who isn't afraid to go over the middle. Staples has the size to absorb a hit, hang onto the rock and go for yards after the catch. The Chiefs have added talent to their WR corps, so Staples is more likely bound for the practice squad in 2017 if he can impress in camp.|

Chiefs | Spencer Ware still likely to start Tue May 9, 09:53 AM
Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is likely to start and see the majority of the work as the featured back, in the opinion of beat writer Adam Teicher.
|Footballguys view: The Chiefs added talent to the backfield when Kareem Hunt (Toledo) was drafted in the third round of the 2017 NFL draft. Hunt is a big back with good vision and a compact frame that makes him tough to bring down. Ware has the experience advantage, and he's likely to be the starter at the beginning of the season. We could see Hunt make a run at the starting job later in the year. Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller will likely work as change-of-pace backs.|

Chiefs | Darrin Reaves waived Mon May 8, 06:41 PM

Chiefs | Alex Smith was consulted before draft Mon May 8, 11:49 AM
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith spoke to Chiefs management twice before the team selected QB Patrick Mahomes in the 2017 NFL draft, according to general manager John Dorsey.
|Footballguys view: The Chiefs kept Smith in the loop, but they drafted Mahomes to eventually replace the veteran. We think Mahomes sits and learns this year behind Smith. After the 2017 season, all of Smith's guaranteed money has been paid. We could see Mahomes take over in a year.|

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes hitting the books Sun May 7, 09:47 PM
Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said he studied his playbook all night when he received it Friday, May 5, and head coach Andy Reid said the toughest part of Mahomes' transition to the NFL will be 'getting the verbiage down and the formations' for the offense.
|Footballguys view: Mahomes has a robust system to learn, but he's got time as most expect him to sit a year behind Alex Smith. The gunslinger from Texas Tech is in a perfect system for his skill set, and Reid should be able to craft an exciting offense around his young passer. Mahomes has supreme confidence in his ability, and the Chiefs potentially have a franchise quarterback in the making.|
Chiefs | Jehu Chesson a red zone weapon? Sun May 7, 09:03 PM
Kansas City Chiefs WR Jehu Chesson said his mentality is to 'win when the ball is in the air,' and he expects to catch plenty of deep passes and jump balls in the red zone.
|Footballguys view: Chesson has great 'my ball' mentality, and that's something that could help him shine in the red zone. He's got the size (6'3" 204 pounds) to help him box out defenders near pay dirt. Chesson also has the athletic ability to contort his body in order to make difficult catches. He's not a burner by any means, and his route running needs work but there are ways to get production out of the rookie from Michigan.|

Chiefs | KC inks three draft picks Sat May 6, 11:05 AM
Kansas City Chiefs fourth-round WR Jehu Chesson (Michigan), fifth-round LB Ukeme Eligwe (Georgia Southern) and sixth-round S Leon McQuay III (USC) signed their four-year rookie contracts Saturday, May 6.
|Footballguys view: Chesson is an interesting player to monitor. The big receiver was a standout for the Wolverines, but a knee injury in 2015 (and an extended recovery) caused his production to dip. He's not going to blow past anybody, but Chesson is big (6'3" 205 pounds) and with his large wingspan he can win at the catch point consistently.|
Chiefs | Kansas City claims Kelvin Taylor Fri May 5, 06:47 PM
Seattle Seahawks RB Kelvin Taylor was claimed off waivers by the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, May 5.
|Footballguys view: The son of former Jaguars great Fred Taylor, Kelvin has bounced around the league to now three teams in just a little over a year. A sixth-round pick of the 49ers in 2016, Taylor gives the Chiefs more depth behind Spencer Ware, Kareem Hunt, Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller. He'll be hard pressed to make the 53-man roster.|

Chiefs | Dee Ford working on technique Wed May 3, 02:31 PM
Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford has been working with some pass rush specialists this offseason to improve his technique, according to general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey said he wants to see continual growth from Ford in 2017.
|Footballguys view: Ford has been getting better and better each year as a pro. He had a career-high 10.0 sacks in 2016, and Ford should get plenty of opportunity to best that number in 2017.|
Dee Ford player page
Chiefs | Dee Ford's option picked up Mon May 1, 12:44 PM
Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford had his fifth-year option exercised Monday, May 1.
|Footballguys view: Ford took some time to get going as a pro, but he finished with 10 sacks last year. He should once again line up opposite Justin Houston to provide the Chiefs with a dangerous pass rusher with the upside to get double-digit sacks.|

Chiefs | KC agrees to terms with six UDFAs Sun Apr 30, 12:59 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent TE Emanuel Byrd (Marshall) as well as WRs Gehrig Dieter (Alabama), Anas Hasic (West Florida), Justin Hunt (Marshall), Tony Stevens (Auburn) and Marcus Kemp (Hawaii).
|Footballguys view: Dieter has great hands and size, and gets the most of out his limited athleticism, but the Chiefs wideout group is crowded, so he'll be a practice squad candidate with a good summer.|
Chiefs | James O'Shaughnessy dealt to Pats Sat Apr 29, 12:20 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs acquired a 2017 fifth-round pick (No. 183 overall) from the New England Patriots for TE James O'Shaughnessy (foot) and a 2017 sixth-round pick (No. 216 overall).
|Footballguys view: He was buried on the depth chart in Kansas City behind Travis Kelce and Demetrius Harris. O'Shaughnessy will continue to see little playing time in New England behind Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen. However, he's a favorite of our very own Matt Waldman due to his athletic ability and receiving skill set. Keep an eye on him in deep dynasty leagues.|

Chiefs | Kareem Hunt's style stood out Sat Apr 29, 12:08 AM
Kansas City Chiefs RB Kareem Hunt's 'contact balance' and running style stood out, according to general manager John Dorsey.
|Footballguys view: Hunt is a favorite of ours in this draft class, but it's going to take some time for him to emerge in a packed Chiefs backfield.|
Chiefs | Kareem Hunt selected by Kansas City Fri Apr 28, 10:49 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs selected RB Kareem Hunt with the 86th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.
|Footballguys view: Hunt is a guy with the ability to make defenders miss and shows good instincts in picking a lane. Doesn't hit the hole as quick as you want a back to, and struggles to accelerate when he has to stop and start. Should start as a backup and if he can improve, he might be someone who an at least carries a share of the load consistently.|
Chiefs | Kansas City drafts Tanoh Kpassagnon Fri Apr 28, 09:14 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs drafted DE Tanoh Kpassagnon with the 59th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.
|Footballguys view: Kpassagnon (good luck with that one announcers) has the size, length and athleticism teams want in the defensive front, but he struggles when pass rushing at times. He needs to add some strength to his lower body so he can set the edge more effectively. Kpassagnon lands in a solid situation though and should be able to learn from some very good players, so we think he can reach his potential.|
Chiefs | Alex Smith to remain starter Fri Apr 28, 01:19 AM
Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith will remain the team's starter, according to head coach Andy Reid.
|Footballguys view: We expect them to bring Pat Mahomes along slowly. Unlike the bears and Texans, the Chiefs' quarterback situation isn't dire. Mahomes has a big arm and no lack of confidence, but needs to learn when to throttle back and be more cautious.|
Alex Smith player page
Chiefs | Kansas City selects Patrick Mahomes Thu Apr 27, 09:21 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs selected Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.
|Footballguys view: When you trade a first this year and a first next year (put aside the third this year) and hop up 17 spots, it's a quarterback. We knew they loved Mahomes and now they've proven it. Mahomes has confidence and the arm to back it up, with the accuracy to make big throws downfield. When he needs to fit a ball into a tight window, he has no issue adding a little extra zip on the ball as well. The problem with all that confidence - and the knowledge that you can beat the odds - is you get a bit too confident. He will get a year or so to season behind Alex Smith and that's a good thing.|
Chiefs | KC could trade up to pick Patrick Mahomes Thu Apr 27, 06:37 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs are 'known to love' Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes and have 'entertained' trading up in the draft in order to select him. Many around the league expect Mahomes to go in the top-10.
|Footballguys view: We think this would actually be a good fit for Mahomes. He could sit behind Alex Smith for a couple of seasons as he knocks off the rough edges of his game. The question is whether he is a smokescreen for someone trying to move back or if the Chiefs are really interested in him and moving up to get him.|
Chiefs | Albert Wilson signed tender Mon Apr 24, 05:19 PM
Kansas City Chiefs restricted free-agent WR Albert Wilson signed his tender Monday, April 24.
|Footballguys view: Wilson is a reserve receiver for the Chiefs, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see them draft a replacement for him in the 2017 NFL draft. At the very least, we should see the Chiefs add more competition to the position.|

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller back to old form? Fri Apr 21, 02:19 PM
Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller has 'that speed and twitch back', according to general manager John Dorsey.
|Footballguys view: With the Jamaal Charles era over in Kansas City, the team is looking for a speedy change-of-pace back. They already have Spencer Ware as the lead back, and Charcandrick West can be a fine part-time player. Spiller is no lock for the 53-man roster, and his fantasy value is limited by the two RBs in front of him on the depth chart.|

Chiefs | Garrett Fugate works out for Chiefs Thu Apr 20, 08:13 AM
Central Missouri QB Garrett Fugate (knee) worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs recently. Fugate is coming off of a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.
|Footballguys view: The Chiefs will look closely at quarterbacks. Whether they take one sooner or later is the question, and that might come down to how much they like this class. This would be a decent landing spot for Fugate, who would have plenty of time to get healthy and ready to go behind Smith. He's got some talent, though we think his ultimate upside is backup.|

Chiefs | Charcandrick West has lost weight Mon Apr 17, 03:58 PM
Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West has lost 10 pounds this offseason but is as strong as he was last year. He is optimistic that he'll be able to be more explosive in 2017.
|Footballguys view: West averaged a bad 3.3 yards per carry last year and he disappointed as a change of pace back behind Spencer Ware. The Chiefs should add a running back at some point in the 2017 NFL draft to compete with West and Ware.|
Charcandrick West player page
Chiefs | Derrick Johnson good to go for camp Mon Apr 17, 03:46 PM
Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') said he will be ready to participate fully in training camp. Johnson ruptured his Achilles' tendon late last season.
|Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries just aren't as devastating as they used to be. Getting Johnson back is great for the Chiefs defense where he can roam the field and lead the charge on that side of the ball.|

Chiefs | Travis Kelce not fully ready for camp Mon Apr 17, 03:29 PM
Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (shoulder) is not expected to be completely healthy before the start of training camp, although he may participate in some light activities, according to head coach Andy Reid. Kelce underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason.
|Footballguys view: Kelce was first listed with a shoulder injury back in Week 13, but he played and produced the rest of the way. The Chiefs are taking it easy on him with the idea that he'll be ready to go at full strength sometime during the preseason.|

Chiefs | Andy Reid endorses Spencer Ware Fri Apr 14, 10:35 PM
Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware has a place in the offense, according to head coach Andy Reid. 'I'm a big Spencer Ware fan,' Reid said. 'Well, the kid's dirty tough. He's going to give you an honest down every snap. He's not real fancy -- that's not his deal, but he can block, he can catch and he can run.'
|Footballguys view: Expect the Chiefs to look for help at the running back position. Ware could still be the lead back in 2017, and there's a chance he gets over 1,000 yards rushing with 30-ish catches mixed in. That gives him RB2 potential for fantasy owners out there.|

Chiefs | Travis Kelce to be ready for training camp Thu Apr 13, 08:42 PM
Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (shoulder) is expected to be '100 percent for training camp,' according to general manager John Dorsey, who added that he is 'ahead' from a rehabilitation standpoint.
|Footballguys view: Kelce is one of the top tight ends in the NFL and will also be one of the top fantasy tight ends as well this coming season.|

Chiefs | DeShone Kizer pays visit to KC Wed Apr 5, 01:33 PM
Notre Dame QB DeShone Kizer joined Clemson's Deshaun Watson as potential first-round quarterbacks who have visited the Kansas City Chiefs this week.
|Footballguys view: The Chiefs have the 27th pick in the first round, and they're looking for a quarterback to groom behind Alex Smith. Kizer is athletic and has a big arm, but he is raw when it comes to decision making, mechanics and accuracy. We should see three or four QBs taken in the first round of the draft, and Kizer is one of them.|
Chiefs | Deshaun Watson meets with Chiefs Mon Apr 3, 06:54 PM
Clemson QB Deshaun Watson met with the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, April 3, according to sources.
|Footballguys view: The Chiefs haven't won a game with a quarterback they've drafted since 1987 (Todd Blackledge). They need to find an heir apparent for Alex Smith, and that could be Watson in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft.|
Chiefs | KC unable to reach deal with Rey Maualuga Sun Apr 2, 10:53 AM
Free-agent LB Rey Maualuga (Bengals) visited the Kansas City Chiefs last week but the two sides were unable to agree to terms on a deal, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
|Footballguys view: Perhaps the two sides will reexamine the situation. Maualuga is no longer the player he used to be, but he could still be a two-down run defender for a team with little linebacker depth inside.|

Free-agent TE Gavin Escobar (Cowboys) agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, March 31, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.
