Chiefs | Slow progress in Dontari Poe talks    Thu Jul 28, 05:20 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe has not made much progress in contract extension talks with the Chiefs, and the two sides probably will not be able to reach an agreement before the start of the regular season.

Chiefs | Eric Berry planning lengthy holdout    Wed Jul 27, 09:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry appears ready to holdout through the preseason, as he is displeased with the team's inability to reach a long-term contract agreement with him this summer. Veterans are expected to report to training camp Friday, July 29, and head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, July 26, that he has communicated with Berry via text this summer but was uncertain of Berry's plans.

Footballguys view: Veteran skip camp, so this is no worry. Berry knows the defense, he's likely in great shape and he can step in during the preseason and be fine. We do think it's crazy he isn't signed to a long-term deal yet, but that may be coming. On the field, missing some practices won't hurt the savvy veteran.

Chiefs | Phillip Gaines fully practices    Wed Jul 27, 07:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines (knee) fully participated in practice Wednesday, July 27, for the first time since he suffered his torn anterior cruciate ligament last season. Head coach Andy Reid said Gaines is the leading candidate to start at right cornerback this season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles placed on PUP    Wed Jul 27, 11:45 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Charles is going to get eased into action. This gives more opportunity for talented backups Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Reports indicate that Ware will actually be the backup to Charles. However, we've also heard that West is going to play a role in this offense--even with Charles healthy and starting. Stay dialed into this situation as camp/preseason rolls on.

Chiefs | Justin Houston may miss games    Tue Jul 26, 04:45 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) is expected to miss some time at the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Houston will not participate in training camp as he is still recovering from offseason knee surgery. While he may not begin the regular season on the PUP list, we could see Houston shut down for at least a couple of games to start the year. We'll know more about his progress as we get through the preseason.

Chiefs | Justin Houston unlikely for camp    Tue Jul 26, 04:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) is not expected to participate in training camp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Houston continues to recover from surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered last year.

Chiefs | Eric Berry not reporting to camp    Tue Jul 26, 03:13 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry is not planning to report for the start of training camp. He has not signed his franchise tender offer at this point, so he will not be fined for missing camp.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs weren't able to sign Berry to a new long-term contract before the July 15th deadline, and now he's showing a bit of disapproval. The two sides can't work on a new deal until 2017, so Berry will have to sign his one-year franchise tender to play in 2016.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't be limited    Tue Jul 26, 11:22 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) workload won't be limited if he's healthy and returns to the player he was before his knee injury, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Charles will be the lead back for the Chiefs once again this year, but expect the team to use backup Charcandrick West as some sort of change-of-pace back. We like Charles as a top-10 fantasy RB this year, and West could perform like a RB4/flex option so long as Charles is healthy.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware active in passing game    Sat Jul 23, 08:50 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware caught lots of passes in OTAs, according to beat writer Terez A. Paylor.

Footballguys view: Ware is going to be part of an RBBC with Charcandrick West if Jamaal Charles goes down this year, and probably the more valuable part of the committee. There's a chance he could get more work in games with Charles than backups to the Hall of Fame level back have gotten in the past, but Ware will only have fantasy relevance this year if Charles misses time.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware considered the backup    Tue Jul 19, 06:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is viewed as the backup running back behind RB Jamaal Charles, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher. Teicher did say that Ware and RB Charcandrick West would both play if Charles was injured.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented runner who could easily carry the load for the Chiefs if necessary. We feel West is going to play a role--at least as a change-of-pace back behind Charles. If something were to happen to Charles, Ware could take over as the lead back with West continuing his valuable part-time play.

Chiefs | Kansas City still wants Eric Berry     Sat Jul 16, 12:49 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will play this season on a one-year deal, but general manager John Dorsey is hopeful that an extension beyond 2017 can be reached sometime next season.

Footballguys view: We're all Berry fans...no matter the team affiliation. He beat cancer, and Berry is an inspiration to all. It's a bit of a surprise that the Chiefs didn't find a way to get something done. We'll see if the two sides can work something out during the year.

Chiefs | No deal for Eric Berry    Fri Jul 15, 03:11 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry will not agree to a long-term deal before the deadline Friday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: For the last week, we've seen reports that indicated nothing was going to get done. Berry is a player we can all cheer for since he beat cancer. The team just didn't have the cap space to make it happen, so Berry will play under the $10.8 million franchise tender in 2016.

Chiefs | Little progress made with Eric Berry    Fri Jul 15, 08:26 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry made very little progress in contract talks Thursday, July 14, and it's unlikely a long-term deal gets done Friday, July 15.

Footballguys view: We're a bit surprised more hasn't been done here. Berry will have to play on the one-year franchise tender, and he'll have a price tag in 2016 of $10.8 million in 2016.

Chiefs | Eric Berry still far apart in talks    Thu Jul 14, 11:12 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry isn't close in contract talks with the Chiefs, Thursday, July 14, but a deal hasn't been ruled out.

Footballguys view: Harrison Smith made a ton of cash in his last contract with the Vikings, and it would make sense that Berry - with more experience and a better track record - should see the same money. That said, nobody is more cash strapped than the Chiefs (with just over $200,000 left in cap space). If they rescinded Berry's tag, they would have $10.8 million to work with but Berry would be a free agent.

Chiefs | Eric Berry may not receive new deal    Wed Jul 13, 05:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry likely will not receive a long-term deal before Friday, July 15, unless there is major progress in contract talks between Berry and the Chiefs.

Footballguys view: It's been quiet on the Berry front, but many felt something would get done between the two sides. With time winding down to sign a new long-term deal, the parties involved may just be too far apart. Berry could be seeking a contract that makes him the highest-paid safety in the league. Currently, Jarius Byrd (Saints) has the largest contract ($54 million) for a safety. Earlier this year, Harrison Smith (Vikings) signed a five-year, $51 million deal with $28.5 million guaranteed.

Chiefs | Eric Berry hopes for long-term deal    Sat Jul 9, 10:01 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry said he wants to sign a long-term deal with the Chiefs but is surprised by how slow contract talks have gone to this point. The Chiefs have until July 15 to sign Berry to a long-term deal.

Footballguys view: We're surprised there's no been more movement here with Berry. He wants a deal that makes him the highest-paid safety in the league, and the Chiefs may (should?) oblige. Berry has the highest average for a safety in 2016 if he plays on the one-year franchise tender of $10.8 million. The veteran may be looking for a deal larger than what Harrison Smith (Vikings) got earlier this year, five-year, $51.5 million with $28.5 million guaranteed and an average annual salary of $10.2 million.

Chiefs | Young WRs working with Jeremy Maclin    Wed Jun 29, 02:05 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin invited WR Chris Conley to work out with him at the team's training facility in the offseason. WR Albert Wilson joined them to lift weights, watch film and work on route concepts four days a week until the team's offseason workout program in mid-April. Conley and Wilson are the team's No. 2 and 3 receivers, and trying to hold off newcomers WR Rod Streater and WR Tyreek Hill.

Footballguys view: Conley is the player to watch here. We love his ability to crisply run the entire route tree. He's got the athleticism to get open with ease, and Conley has the speed to get by defenders quickly. Wilson is a fiery receiver who is built like a running back. No matter who emerges as the 2nd or 3rd WR in Kansas City, there will not be many fantasy points scored. Both Conley and Wilson are players to look at in dynasty leagues only at this time.

Chiefs | Receiver depth still unsettled    Wed Jun 22, 04:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WRs Albert Wilson, Chris Conley, Rod Streater, De'Anthony Thomas and Tyreek Hill will all compete for playing time behind WR Jeremy Maclin. Head coach Andy Reid liked what he saw from Wilson and Conley during offseason workouts, though.

Footballguys view: Travis Kelce is really the #2 receiver for the Chiefs, or perhaps 2B with Jamaal Charles as a 2A. The team could pass more with Justin Houston possibly sidelined for a good part of the season, but any wide receiver other than Maclin would only amount to the fourth option in a somewhat conservative passing game. Conley could be a deep threat and he's an athletic freak, so he's the one to watch in deep dynasty leagues.

Chiefs | Eric Berry could land big deal    Tue Jun 21, 01:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry has a reasonable chance to become the highest-paid safety and top Minnesota Vikings FS Harrison Smith's $51.25 million deal.

Footballguys view: Things have been a bit quiet on the Berry front. The two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal. Berry fought back from cancer and can continue to be an impact player for the Chiefs. His deal should start where Smith's deal is at. We'll know more about the likelihood of a new deal for Berry when the deadline gets much closer.

Chiefs | Dee Ford dealing with tendonitis     Sat Jun 18, 08:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford (knee) is dealing with tendonitis in his knee, but he practiced Thursday, June 16, in a limited capacity.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to be careful here. Ford could be one of their primary pass-rushers in 2016. Linebacker Justin Houston is coming back from an ACL injury, and his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Tamba Hali is not quite the player he used to be and will likely play a more limited role this season. That means it's time for Ford to shine.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will not be rushed    Fri Jun 17, 07:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was able to participate in some drills during minicamp, but head coach Andy Reid said the team will not rush Charles back to the lineup.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are being wisely cautious here. Charles is likely to be a RB1 for fantasy owners when healthy, but he's no longer a top-5 player at his position if Charcandrick West gets used a bit more. West proved last year that he can be dangerous with the rock in his hands, and there are rumblings that he's going to have a role on offense...even though Charles is going to be back. Charles has a current ADP of RB7 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Justin Houston to miss start of camp    Fri Jun 17, 07:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) will not be ready for the start of training camp because he is recovering from a knee injury.

Footballguys view: Houston's status for the start of the regular season is also up in the air. The team is going to limit him in training camp if he does actually get to practice. The hope is Houston is going to be eased in at the beginning of the regular season.

Chiefs | Dee Ford bothered by knee    Thu Jun 16, 10:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Dee Ford (knee) exited practice with a sore knee Wednesday, June 15.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need to be cautious here. They already have LB Justin Houston returning from a knee injury, but his status for the start of the regular season is up in the air. Tamba Hali is not quite the same player as he used to be, and he's been missing minicamp with his own knee injury. We should see Hali play a smaller role in 2016, so the Chiefs really need Ford to get healthy, stay healthy and make an impact as a pass-rusher.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles may take part in minicamp    Sun Jun 12, 05:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may be able to participate in some drills during the mandatory minincamp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles has not participated in organized team activities because he is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: If he does end up participating in minicamp, it will be on a very limited capacity. There's no need to rush him back and risk further injury. Charles should be 100 percent healthy (or close enough) by the start of the regular season. Fantasy owners need to recognize that the Chiefs will use Charcandrick West a bit more...even with Charles back as the starter. That dings Charles' fantasy value a bit, and it makes West a sure-fire handcuff.

Chiefs | Cornerbacks hurting    Sat Jun 11, 03:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Phillip Gaines (knee) was given a day of rest Friday, June 10, as he continues to recover from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. CBs D.J. White and Shannon Edwards left practice Friday, June 10, with strained hamstrings.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have a great front seven, but their secondary has a couple of question marks. They need guys like Gaines to stay healthy and play well so their defense can stand strong in 2016.

Chiefs | Charcandrick West still sick    Sat Jun 11, 03:54 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West (illness) is making progress from an undisclosed illness, according to head coach Andy Reid, but he has missed four straight days of practice.

Footballguys view: West should be back in plenty of time for training camp. Fantasy owners need to recognize that West is going to play a role this year for the Chiefs...even with Jamaal Charles back healthy. West is an obvious and needed handcuff for any Charles owner.

Chiefs | Justin Houston may be at minicamp    Sat Jun 11, 03:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) could be present for minicamp next week, although he probably won't practice, according to head coach Andy Reid. Houston is still recovering from surgery for a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Houston's status for Week 1 of the regular season is up in the air right now. The Chiefs need to be cautious with him, and Houston may end up having to start the season on the PUP list--forcing him out of the first six weeks of the regular season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could return soon    Sat Jun 11, 03:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) might participate in team drills during minicamp next week, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: The team is going to take it easy on Charles as he comes back from this injury. The plan is to have him ready for training camp and starting for Week 1 of the regular season. Charles may be more of a top-10 fantasy RB this year instead of a top-5 fantasy RB because of the emergence of Charcandrick West.

Chiefs | Eric Berry skips workouts    Fri Jun 10, 09:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry skipped the voluntary workouts that wrapped up Friday, June 10, and it is unknown if he will show up for the three-day minicamp that begins Tuesday, June 14.

Footballguys view: Berry and the Chiefs have until July 15th to work out a new contract. He has not yet signed his franchise tender and is trying to negotiate a long-term extension.

Chiefs | KC working on two-minute offense    Tue Jun 7, 01:35 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have been working to improve their two-minute offense under head coach Andy Reid this offseason. 'We could be better there,' Reid said. 'Both sides of the ball, we could be better. It's about our working on it and we're doing that. We've got to capitalize on a few (more) situations there.' The Chiefs were one of the worst two-minute offenses in the league last year.

Footballguys view: How about letting QB Alex Smith air it out a bit more? Last year...and once again...Smith was the worst QB in the league when it comes to air-yards-per-target. He was tossing the ball a meager 6.32 yards on average, while the league average is 8.2 air yards per passing attempt.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't work until camp    Thu Jun 2, 01:53 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) made an appearance at practice Wednesday, June 1, wearing a jersey and shorts without a helmet. However, he did not practice, and he is not expected to participate in practice until training begins in July, at the earliest.

Footballguys view: We would be less concerned if Charles wasn't coming off his second ACL injury at 30 but even being worried about that won't stop us from feeling like he is RB1 material. It does put him in the lower half of that category, though. Fantasy owners need to note that the Chiefs are likely to use Charcandrick West in the offense--even if Charles is at full strength.

Chiefs | Justin Houston may not start season    Tue May 31, 07:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston (knee) may not begin the regular season on the active roster, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Houston should begin the season on the PUP list which would force him to miss the first six weeks of the regular season. After that point, the Chiefs would have three weeks to decide whether or not to activate Houston or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve. Houston is still recovering from surgery in February on his torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis denies requesting a trade this offseason, but he said he looks forward to the opportunity to show what he can do on the field.

Footballguys view: Jamaal Charles is getting healthy while Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West got extensions, so if he did ask for a trade, we couldn't blame Davis. With that much talent ahead of him there's no point in having him on your roster this year.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin (ankle) injured his ankle in practice Thursday, May 26, according to head coach Andy Reid. Reid said Maclin's injury is of no concern, though.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited in OTAs    Thu May 19, 01:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be limited in organized team activities, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him to make sure he's OK to go for the season and we see him as a borderline RB1/RB2 this year. After turning 30, we hope he can regain the form that had him lighting up fantasy leagues last season, but we aren't 100% sure it can happen. He remains a very productive and talented back.

Chiefs | Chris Jones not expected to start    Tue May 10, 01:08 AM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris D. Jones is not expected to serve as an immediate starter along the defensive front, although that could change with a strong training camp and preseason.

Footballguys view: Jones has incredible strength at the point of attack. He can stuff the run, but he's also quick enough to get some push and interior pressure. The Chiefs have an outstanding starting front seven, and Jones gives them a strong rotational player as a rookie.

Chiefs | Five draft picks locked up by KC    Fri May 6, 11:07 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed OL Parker Ehinger, QB Kevin Hogan, LB Dadi Nicolas, WR Demarcus Robinson and DB D.J. White to contracts Friday, May 6. Financial terms of the deals were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Hogan is an interesting developmental QB with toughness, moxie and strong leadership qualities. He needs a ton of mechanical work, but we like the Chiefs taking a chance on him. Robinson is incredibly fast and can fly by a defense. Big plays are old hat for Robinson, and he can flip the field in the blink of an eye. We'll see if he can finally play up to his potential after a career with the Florida Gators that was marred by four suspensions.
