Chiefs | Keshawn Hill update    Thu Jul 30, 11:41 AM

Updating an earlier report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Keshawn Hill (hamstring) left practice with a hamstring injury Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not given enough time to heal. Undrafted out of Sam Houston State, Hill is a longshot to make the roster and this injury doesn't help.

Chiefs | Chris Conley day to day    Thu Jul 30, 11:40 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley (knee) is day to day with a knee strain.

Footballguys view: There's not much behind Jeremy Maclin in the Kansas City WR corps, but we like Conley's upside. The rookie out of Georgia has good hands and can pull away from defenders after the catch. Keep an eye on him in dynasty leagues.

Chiefs | Keshawn Hill exits practice    Thu Jul 30, 11:29 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Keshawn Hill (undisclosed) left practice with an apparent injury Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Sam Houston State, Hill is a longshot to make the roster. He's got a good nose for the end zone (18 touchdowns as a senior), and Hill can contribute as a return man.

Chiefs | Tyler Bray on NFI list    Wed Jul 29, 07:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Bray (knee) was placed on the Non-Football Injury list Wednesday, July 29. Bray is still undergoing testing to determine a potential return date.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Ramik Wilson (back) suffered a back strain while training during the players' month-long break, and he is currently on the Non-Football Injury list, according to head coach Andy Reid Wednesday, July 29.

Chiefs | Demetrius Harris to begin on PUP    Wed Jul 29, 07:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Demetrius Harris (foot) will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list, according to head coach Andy Reid Wednesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Harris is an interesting player to watch in super deep dynasty leagues. The converted basketball star is going to compete for the TE2 job behind Travis Kelce when he's healthy.

Chiefs | Cyrus Gray cut    Wed Jul 29, 01:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Cyrus Gray was released Wednesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Gray was a good all-around back in college at Texas A&M, but he didn't develop as a pro player. Knile Davis will serve as the primary backup behind Jamaal Charles once again. A guy like fullback Spencer Ware could end up as the team's third-string running back.

Chiefs | Chris Conley leaves practice    Wed Jul 29, 12:39 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley (knee) left practice early Wednesday, July 29, because of a knee strain.

Footballguys view: We like Conley's upside and potential as a pro. The rookie from Georgia has good hands and concentration. We'll learn more about this injury in the near future. If healthy, Conley will compete for the WR2 job in Kansas City opposite Jeremy Maclin.

Chiefs | Eric Berry cleared for practice    Wed Jul 29, 01:40 AM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Eric Berry (illness) has been cleared to take the practice field with the team Wednesday, July 29. He was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma in December 2014. After several rounds of thorough testing and a process that concluded Tuesday, July 28, he has been given the green light.

Footballguys view: Fantastic news here. Berry has beaten cancer, and now he's ready to resume his football career. Even non-Chiefs fans have to be cheering for this guy.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe had surgery    Tue Jul 28, 05:58 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) underwent surgery on his herniated disk July 15.

Footballguys view: Head coach Andy Reid said there's a chance Poe is able to return in the early part of the season depending on how he recovers. We'd say that's quite optimistic. Earlier reports indicated Poe could begin the season on the PUP list, forcing him out of the first six weeks of the year.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe has back injury    Tue Jul 28, 04:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) is dealing with a herniated disk in his back and has had two epidurals. The extent of and timetable for the injury were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Chiefs here. Poe is likely to start the regular season on the PUP list, thus missing the first six week. We'll see if he's ready to return from this back injury after that. Jaye Howard will fill in for however long Poe is out.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson expected to start    Fri Jul 24, 06:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson is projected to be the No. 2 wide receiver behind WR Jeremy Maclin, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are avoiding Wilson even if he's the starter opposite Maclin. We like rookie Chris Conley to eventually emerge as a starter. The rookie from Georgia is fast, explosive and capable of making plays above the rim. So long as the Chiefs have Alex Smith at quarterback, their passing game won't be too much of a threat.

Chiefs | Sean Smith suspended    Fri Jul 24, 09:55 AM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Sean Smith was suspended three games for violating the league's substance-abuse policy.

Footballguys view: Smith pled guilty to DUI last month, and now he'll be on probation for two years. With Smith out of the lineup for three games, we could see rookie first-round pick Marcus Peters thrown into action as a first-team corner.

Chiefs | Chris Conley fitting in    Wed Jul 22, 11:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley has shown a great deal of potential heading into training camp and the preseason. He has been working to master head coach Andy Reid's complex playbook, a task he said included flash cards and hotel-room route running.

Footballguys view: Albert Wilson showed some potential on plays that set him up for run after catch opportunities last year, but he's vulnerable in the battle for the #2 wide receiver job to a physical marvel like Conley who can do more downfield and when the ball is in the air. He's not likely to have redraft value this year, but a quick start to Conley's career could help Jeremy Maclin's stock by forcing defenses to honor the #2 receiver as a deep big play threat.

Chiefs | Demetrius Harris' status uncertain    Fri Jul 17, 05:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Demetrius Harris' (foot) status for the start of training camp is uncertain because he underwent foot surgery earlier this offseason.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners shouldn't be that concerned with Harris. He's not going to do much unless Travis Kelce gets banged up. Dynasty owners in deeper leagues should be monitoring his situation.

Chiefs | Justin Houston signs new deal    Wed Jul 15, 11:58 AM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston signed a six-year, $101 million deal that includes $52.5 million guaranteed Wednesday, July 15.

Footballguys view: This contract is the richest in Chiefs franchise history and the largest deal ever for a linebacker in NFL history. Houston is certainly worth it. Over the last 43 games, Houston has 43 sacks. Last year, he nearly broke the single-season record for sacks (half a sack short) with 22 sacks. He's one of the best pass-rushers in the game, and Houston is now locked up for the long term.

Chiefs | Alex Smith working with feet    Mon Jul 13, 03:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been focusing on footwork and technique this offseason, particularly with his downfield passes. 'For me, footwork is something that never goes away,' Smith said. 'You're constantly trying to get better with your feet.'

Footballguys view: It's not his footwork that is the problem. Smith has been hesitant to attack the edges of the defense as evidenced by his league low of 5.58 air yards per attempt in 2014. Sure, the team added Jeremy Maclin to upgrade the wide receiving corps but Smith needs to be more bold as a passer in order for the move to really pay off.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles feeling young again    Mon Jul 13, 03:01 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles said he feels healthy, eating right and doing yoga. 'I'm doing everything I am supposed to do to keep my body up at my age. Charles added that he feels like he's 20 or 21 years old again.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners know what they'll get from Charles. The Chiefs have to be better passing the ball this year if they want to be a playoff team, but the centerpiece of the offense is Charles and the ground game. If healthy, he should finish as a top-5 fantasy RB in 2015.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson ready to play    Mon Jul 13, 02:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) said he's looking forward to training camp after missing all but one game last year with a torn Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: Johnson had missed practices during organized team activities with knee inflammation, but should be full go once training camp starts. The Chiefs defense is a strength, and they're even stronger with Johnson on the field.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles the total package    Sun Jul 12, 08:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has ranked in the top three in total touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, recording a league-high 19 in 2013 and 14 last year.

Footballguys view: Charles was by his own admission banged up last year with nagging injuries that affected him for most of the season. If it's a sign of his body wearing down as he turns 29 before the new year, then he'll be a disappointing top 5 pick in fantasy drafts. If it was an aberration and Charles is closer to 100% for more of this year, he'll make anyone who takes him early in the first very happy.

Chiefs | Sign Jeret Smith    Fri Jun 19, 06:09 PM

Undrafted free-agent WR Jeret Smith (McMurry) signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, June 19.

Footballguys view: Smith has hung around the Chiefs as a tryout player in rookie minicamp and OTAs this offseason. He can run drag routes across the middle and move the chains. Smith finished his college career as McMurray's leader in yards receiving (2,729 yards) on 181 receptions, which ranked second in school history.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles taking week off    Thu Jun 18, 04:54 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles will be taking a week off from football now that minicamp is over. Following the hiatus, Charles will begin an intense workout regimen. Charles said he would try to come back early and work with the Chief's strength and conditioning coach to get more in shape and back in the groove.

Footballguys view: All players get away before the start of training camp. The best ones come back early to begin training before the dog days of August. Even with better weapons in the passing game, the Chiefs offense is all about Charles. Fantasy owners should look at him as a top-5 pick once again this year.

Chiefs | Chris Conley receiving starter looks    Tue Jun 16, 11:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley has been receiving a lot of snaps with the starting offense, with satisfactory results. Conley also started with the first-team offense recently when WR Jeremy Maclin (foot) sat out with a sore foot.

Footballguys view: The rookie from Georgia has the talent to be a starter in the NFL. The Chiefs don't have a strong group of WRs behind Maclin, so Conley has a real opportunity for significant playing time in 2015. The nature of the offense (and Alex Smith) won't make Conley much of a fantasy factor....even if he's a starter.

Chiefs | Da'Rick Rogers cut    Tue Jun 16, 10:08 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Da'Rick Rogers was released Tuesday, June 16.

Footballguys view: Rogers has a ton of natural talent, but he's bounced around to three different teams in the last 22 months. The Chiefs lack WR talent behind Jeremy Maclin, so it's a telling sign of where Rogers' ability is at in the pros. Maybe some other team could take a chance on him as a developmental player.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles plans on playing a while    Sun Jun 14, 07:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles will turn 29 by the end of the 2015 season, but he said he has no plans on slowing down and wants to play another six years. '(The game) has changed,' Charles said. 'They've got all kinds of technology now, all kinds of medicine people have come up with to stay healthy.'

Footballguys view: Running backs seem to have much shorter career arcs than they used to. Charles can shoulder a smaller workload (around 210 carries) and still produce as an effective starting running back for the Chiefs. That plus his all-purpose skill set could have him sticking around in the NFL longer than some would expect. Charles could play six more seasons, even if towards the end of his career he became more of a change-of-pace back.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson practices    Thu Jun 11, 04:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson (hamstring) returned to practice as a limited participant Thursday, June 11. He had missed the last three practices with a strained hamstring.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs like Wilson enough to think of him as a possible weapon across from Jeremy Maclin. If he does that, you might see him emerge as a decent WR5 or depth value, but like anything else in this conservative offense, his upside is weighed down by his quarterback and coach.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson back at practice    Thu Jun 11, 04:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) was a full participant in practice Thursday, June 11, after missing the last five practices with knee inflammation.

Footballguys view: Derrick Johnson has been participating in offseason workouts, only taking a little break to rest his knee. We're not worried about his availability for the season and the Chiefs need him in the front seven so they may be cautious with him this summer.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin returns to practice    Thu Jun 11, 04:21 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin (foot) returned to practice as a full participant Thursday, June 11. He missed practice Wednesday, June 10, with inflammation in his foot.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are excited to get Maclin back, but we're not quite as ecstatic as we believe that he'll be hampered by a very conservative offense in Kansas City--and oh yeah, QB Alex Smith. The Chiefs threw zero touchdowns to receivers last year, but we expect that to change in 2015--largely due to Maclin. However, the overall scheme limits this entire passing game. We see him as a WR3 with upside which we're seeing reflected in his current ADP of 6.02 or 27th receiver off the board.

Chiefs | Alex Smith being asked to go deep    Sun Jun 7, 10:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith has been asked to take more shots down the field this season. 'I like where Alex is,' offensive coordinator Doug Pederson said. 'But now in the spring, we want to see any quarterback shoot the ball down the field and at least test it. That gives him the comfort level the next time he's in that situation.'

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. In 2014, Smith had a league-low 5.58 air yards per target and he never looks comfortable throwing deep. The Chiefs went out an added WR Jeremy Maclin in free agency with the idea that he would give them the deep target they were missing last season. We like Maclin--and defenders certainly need to respect his speed--but the problem here is Smith. We'll have to see if he shows more boldness as a passer in 2015.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe expected to be fine    Sun Jun 7, 10:29 AM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) is expected to be fine even though he missed some practice last week, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Poe is a mountain of a man who can plug up the middle of the line. For a big man, Poe can also create interior pressure on the quarterback. The team will be cautious with him moving forward so this minor injury doesn't get aggravated.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson leaves early    Wed Jun 3, 02:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson (hamstring) left organized team activities early Wednesday, June 3, because of a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Looking over the Chiefs depth chart at wide receiver behind Jeremy Maclin reveals a weak group of players. Wilson is likely their WR2 this year, but he's not an exciting option for fantasy owners. We'll see if Maclin's ability to stretch the field can help Wilson snare more than 16 catches (his total last year) in 2015.

Chiefs | Dontari Poe misses practice    Wed Jun 3, 02:12 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe (back) did not participate in organized team activities Wednesday, June 3. Poe's back injury does not appear to be serious.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are wise to let Poe rest here. The injury is considered minor at this time, and they don't want it to worsen because of some extra reps in OTAs. Poe is a dominant force in the middle of the defensive line who can regularly eat up double teams and stuff the run.

Chiefs | Two defenders miss workout    Tue Jun 2, 06:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (knee) and DT Dontari Poe (back) missed organized team activities Tuesday, June 2. Johnson sat with knee inflammation while Poe sat with back pain.

Footballguys view: These key veterans don't need every snap in the offseason. Johnson is a leader the team looks to at the linebacker position. Poe is a mountain of a man who opponents find nearly impossible to move. They'll be back when these minor injuries have cleared up.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali recovering     Tue May 26, 07:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali (knee) said he is feeling good as he recovers from a knee scope he underwent this offseason to remove loose cartilage.

Footballguys view: There's no word on when the scope happened, but it sounds like Hali is going to be ready to go when training camp starts. Hali took a $3 million pay cut earlier this year, and he's looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2014 where he compiled only six sacks.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson could start    Fri May 22, 05:45 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson will be given the first chance to win the starting wide receiver job opposite WR Jeremy Maclin.

Footballguys view: No offense to Wilson, but that's not an exciting option. We like rookie Chris Conley to eventually take over as a starter opposite Maclin. However, the passing game still hinges on Alex Smith. Outside of Maclin as a WR3, fantasy owners should be looking elsewhere for help.

Chiefs | Ryan Taylor signed    Fri May 22, 02:30 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed TE Ryan Taylor on Thursday, May 21. OG Ricky Henry was released to make room for Taylor on the roster.

Footballguys view: Originally a seventh-round pick by the Packers in 2011, Taylor spent last season on three different rosters. If he makes the Chiefs roster, he'll mainly be a special teams player.

Chiefs | Keshawn Hill signed    Tue May 19, 05:23 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Keshawn Hill (Sam Houston State) signed an undisclosed deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Hill measures in at 5'9" 211 pounds and he rushed for over 1,000 yards and 18 touchdowns last year for Sam Houston State. He's a long-shot to make the final roster, but he could prove himself as a return man for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Two players waived    Tue May 19, 05:12 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Manasseh Garner and TE Earnest Pettway were waived Tuesday, May 19.

Chiefs | Marcus Peters signed    Fri May 15, 06:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Marcus Peters signed a four-year deal with the team Friday, May 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Peters had a falling out with coaches at Washington, but most stories about him pre-draft said he is a good teammate. Andy Reid has plenty of experience with different personalities and should help Peters fit in as a rookie. He's a massive upgrade to the Chiefs cornerback position long term.

Link to story

Chiefs | Chris Conley signs rookie deal    Wed May 13, 12:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Chris Conley signed his rookie four-year deal Wednesday, May 13.

Footballguys view: Conley is one of our favorite rookie receivers in this class--and not only because he made a sweet Star Wars fan film called "Retribution." He didn't put up gaudy numbers in Georgia's run-heavy offense, but Conley can certainly produce when called upon. He has the speed to get on top of the defense in a hurry, and he does a good job of tracking the ball over his shoulder. Conley has the footwork and body control to snare passes near the sidelines or at the back of the end zone. He'll compete for the starting job opposite Jeremy Maclin this year.

Chiefs | Terrelle Pryor released    Tue May 5, 04:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Terrelle Pryor was released Tuesday, May 5.

Footballguys view: Pryor just isn't going to make it in the NFL. He's had multiple opportunities to prove himself as a passer in the pros, and Pryor has struggled. We can't imagine teams lined up to add him, and Pryor may have to go to Canada to continue his pro football career.

Chiefs | KC trades up for Chris Conley    Fri May 1, 10:17 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to pick University of Georgia WR Chris Conley in Round 3 (No. 76 overall) Friday, May 1. The Minnesota Vikings traded down to get more picks.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need receivers and Conley is a decent one. Also, a guy who wrote and directed a Star Wars fan film, which will make him a favorite around the Footballguys office. He's exceptionally quick and is great after the catch. We could see a lot of him in his rookie season across from Maclin.

Chiefs | Marcus Peters selected 18th overall    Thu Apr 30, 10:06 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters was selected 18th overall by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are continuing to build a decent defense. They still lack a wide receiver besides Jeremy Maclin, but there are plenty of those in the second round.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin working with Alex Smith    Mon Apr 27, 03:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin and QB Alex Smith played catch for the first time since Maclin was acquired this offseason. Maclin said everything was smooth and that he was simply trying to get a feel for how Smith threw the football.

Footballguys view: Smith said he believes Maclin's transition into the Chiefs' offense will be relatively smooth since he has already played for head coach Andy Reid in Philadelphia. While that's true, he didn't play with a quarterback like Smith. We see Smith as a player who is reluctant to attack a defense vertically....and that's the best thing that Maclin does. We'll see if Smith can play better and hit Maclin on those deep targets.

Chiefs | Pick up Dontari Poe's option    Fri Apr 24, 04:29 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe's fifth-year option in his contract has been picked up by the team, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Poe had a bit of a down year in 2014, though he had a career high six sacks. The Chiefs will probably try and work out a long-term deal over the next year as Poe has become one of the best nose tackles in the NFL.

Chiefs | Shaquille Richardson released    Tue Apr 21, 05:20 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Shaquille Richardson (undisclosed) was released Tuesday, April 21, with a failure to disclose physical condition designation.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick by the Steelers just last year, Richardson was picked up by the Chiefs earlier this year in February. An injury-riddled preseason with the Steelers led Richardson to being placed on the team's practice squad. The two sides reached an injury settlement last November which left Richardson free to sign anywhere. It's not a good sign that he made it exactly one day into the offseason program with the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Dorial Green-Beckham visiting KC    Tue Apr 21, 10:10 AM

Oklahoma WR Dorial Green-Beckham is visiting with the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, April 21.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need help at the wide receiver position, and Green-Beckham is incredibly talented. The problem with him are the off-field concerns and maturity questions. If he stays out of trouble and focused, Green-Beckham could be one of the 10 best receivers in the league. The natural talent is there, but character concerns will keep his draft stock down around the late first round.

Chiefs | Alex Smith medically cleared    Mon Apr 20, 06:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (spleen) was medically cleared for the start of offseason practice, Monday, April 20. The Chiefs don't begin full-squad practices until May, 26.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Smith is not superstar, but he's a capable starter who should have better talent around him this season. Fantasy owners shouldn't be expecting much from Smith, and he's an uninspiring QB2....a low-end one at that.

Chiefs | Two players sign tenders    Mon Apr 20, 05:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WRs Frankie Hammond Jr. and Junior Hemingway signed their exclusive rights free-agent tenders Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Awesome, more pedestrian wide receivers for the Chiefs. They need to upgrade the position, and that's why they went out and got Jeremy Maclin in free agency this offseason. Even with the addition of Maclin, we think the Chiefs draft a wide receiver with a premium pick in this talent-rich WR class. Hammond and Hemingway will fight for reserve positions and have little fantasy value.

Chiefs | Mike DeVito will participate in workouts    Mon Apr 20, 02:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') will be able to participate in offseason workouts, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries just aren't are serious as they used to be. The Chiefs should take it easy on DeVito as he continues to recover.
