Chiefs | Brandon Hartson waived    Thu Apr 16, 05:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LS Brandon Hartson was waived Thursday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Just cutting the fat from the roster. A long snapper who has moved around the league a little, Hartson may find some work this summer.

Chiefs | Byron Bell works out    Sat Apr 11, 06:57 AM

Free-agent OT Byron Bell (Panthers) worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs this week, according to league sources.

Footballguys view: A right tackle for the most of his career, Bell moved to the left side for 2014 and struggled. He'll likely be looked at as a right tackle with any team that's interested.

Chiefs | Josh Martin signs tender    Mon Apr 6, 08:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Josh Martin signed his one-year exclusive-rights tender off Monday, April 6. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: An undrafted free agent out of Columbia in 2013, Martin is a backup linebacker who can play an important role on special teams. In 2014, Martin collected 14 tackles in 14 games for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Derrick Johnson likely to stay    Tue Mar 31, 02:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Derrick Johnson (Achilles') and DE Mike DeVito (Achilles') are both pushing each other in their rehabs from torn Achilles' tendons. Both players also have a year left on their contracts. DeVito agreed to a pay cut that dropped his salary to $2.9 million. Johnson has a salary cap number of $5.2 million, and the Chiefs are only around $2.85 million under the 2015 cap. Kansas City could create more room by releasing Johnson, but the Chiefs are expected to hang onto him.

Footballguys view: Johnson can clean up as a run-stuffer if healthy. The Chiefs would be wise to keep him around even though his cap number is a bit higher than they perhaps would like it to be.

Chiefs | Marcus Mariota a fit in KC?    Wed Mar 25, 05:53 PM

Oregon QB Marcus Mariota would be a perfect fit for the Kansas City Chiefs and head coach Andy Reid, even if the team is committed to QB Alex Smith, in the opinion of NFL Draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. Kiper cites the success of former QB Donovan McNabb as Reid's quarterback with the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Mariota is expected to be gone when KC picks at 18 overall, and the Chiefs are unlikely to trade up to take him. Reid said he didn't have a chance to meet with Mariota, either.

Footballguys view: Mariota would be a fit because he's essentially Alex Smith (if he plays up to his potential). There's no way the Chiefs could land him at their current spot, and they'd have to move up to get him. This is the team that hasn't won a game with a quarterback they've drafted since 1987 (Todd Blackledge).

Chiefs | KC wants a bigger Travis Kelce    Wed Mar 25, 05:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce played at roughly 250 pounds in 2014, but head coach Andy Reid wants Kelce to report bigger in 2015, and Reid thinks Kelce can pack on an extra 15 pounds without losing any of his speed or quickness. Kelce led the team in catches (67) and receiving yards (862) last season.

Footballguys view: Kelce has a skill set similar to that of Rob Gronkowski (Patriots) because of his size and speed. Adding more size would help him stay durable, and it would make him tougher to bring down after the catch.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce studying Gonzo    Fri Mar 20, 02:09 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce has been studying former NFL TE Tony Gonzalez's game tape to creatively find ways to improve Kelce's game, focusing on the fundamentals in relation to instinctual play.

Footballguys view: Kelce has the natural talent and upside to be a top-3 tight end. The Chiefs have worked to make their passing game better this offseason, and we'll see if it pays off in 2015.

Chiefs | Ron Parker re-signs    Sat Mar 14, 01:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs SS Ron Parker has re-signed to a five-year deal worth $30 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A good move for the Chiefs here, but man that price tag is higher than most expected. Parker proved last year that he could play both corner and safety...and he's a better safety than he is corner. Expect him to line up there once again in 2015.

Chiefs | Richard Gordon, Kelcie McCray re-sign    Fri Mar 13, 05:57 PM

Free-agent TE Richard Gordon and SS Kelcie McCray have re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Chiefs | Jason Avant returns to KC    Fri Mar 13, 05:52 PM

Free-agent WR Jason Avant has re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: It's a decent move, but not a great move the Chiefs. They need better help at the wide receiver position. Yes, they added Jeremy Maclin but they need more. That's why we think they'll look at wide receivers in the first round of the 2015 NFL draft.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe released by Chiefs    Thu Mar 12, 10:59 PM

Free-agent WR Dwayne Bowe was released by the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: It's now official. Bowe is decent when he is healthy and he cares. He's had trouble with both of those things during his pro career. Bowe needed a fresh start--and he does have talent--but we don't think the market will be white-hot for his services on the open market.

Chiefs | Paul Fanaika agrees    Thu Mar 12, 02:55 PM

Free-agent OG Paul Fanaika (Cardinals) agreed to terms with the Kansas City Chiefs Wednesday, March 11. He's slated to sign his contract Friday, March 13, pending a physical.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs continuing to add talent up front with this move. Fanaika lists at 6'5, 327 pounds. He has a lot of starting experience in the trenches with the Cardinals over the last two seasons with 30 total games started. This is the second guard they've added on Thursday as they traded the Saints for Ben Grubbs earlier in the day.

Chiefs | Will release Dwayne Bowe    Thu Mar 12, 01:52 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe is expected to be released Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: As expected, Bowe is getting bounced because the team added Jeremy Maclin in free agency. When he cares, Bowe can be a decent player. Getting him to care takes some doing. We'll see if a fresh start does him good.

Chiefs | Acquire Ben Grubbs    Thu Mar 12, 01:26 PM

New Orleans Saints OG Ben Grubbs was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for a 2015 5th round draft pick Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: A good move for both sides here. Grubbs was due $9.6 million this season, so he was likely to get cut by the Saints. The Chiefs have lost four starters on the offensive line over the last two years. It is a good move to add a talent like Grubbs up front.

Chiefs | Demetrius Harris retained    Wed Mar 11, 07:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Demetrius Harris had his exclusive-rights tender retained Wednesday, March 11.

Footballguys view: Harris is yet another basketball convert with length and ball skills. He could get some more targets this year with Anthony Fasano no longer a part of the Chiefs, but Travis Kelce is the obvious candidate for a big leap in fantasy production at the tight end position for Kansas City.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin signs with Chiefs    Wed Mar 11, 01:11 PM

Free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) officially signed with the Kansas City Chiefs Wednesday, March 11. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Maclin goes from an offense that prioritizes taking deep shots to one that rarely throws downfield and did not complete a TD pass to a wide receiver last year. Maclin is getting paid, but those that rely on him in fantasy leagues in 2015 might not.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe likely to be cut    Tue Mar 10, 01:20 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe is likely to be cut this week.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. If Bowe cares, he can be an effective starter. Too often in Kansas City it seemed like Bowe didn't care, and his stats reflected that. We can't imagine teams falling all over themselves to get Bowe, but there will be some interest on the open market.

Chiefs | Sign Tyvon Branch    Tue Mar 10, 10:39 AM

Free-agent SS Tyvon Branch (Raiders) agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs Tuesday, March 10. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs had to do something at the safety position because their cupboard was bare. Branch has proven to be an effective starter when healthy. Expect Kansas City to make another move or two at safety before the start of the camp.

Chiefs | KC to give Jeremy Maclin big money    Mon Mar 9, 02:05 PM

Philadelphia Eagles impending free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin is expected to sign a contract with the Kansas City Chiefs that is close to the $10 million a year Green Bay Packers WR Randall Cobb received from the Packers, according to a source. Maclin could even receive a little more than Cobb received in his contract.

Footballguys view: Maclin getting more than Cobb is certainly an eye-opener. The Chiefs are desperate at wide receiver, so overpaying a bit for a WR1 was in the cards.

Chiefs | Jeremy Maclin expected to sign with KC    Sun Mar 8, 08:53 PM

Impending free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) is expected to sign with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Maclin is going to reunite with Andy Reid here, and he gives the Chiefs a real threat at the wide receiver position. Reports indicate the Chiefs are giving Maclin a deal worth around $11 million annually. That's a price tag larger than expected. Kansas City was desperate for WR help after no wideout scored a touchdown for them last year. We'll see if Alex Smith can get the ball enough to Maclin to support that price tag.

Chiefs | Dezman Moses agrees    Sun Mar 8, 03:39 AM

Free-agent OLB Dezman Moses (Chiefs), a restricted free agent, has agreed to a one-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: An elbow injury forced Moses to miss all of the 2014 season. We'll see if he can get his career back on track after flashing some ability during his time with the Packers in 2012.

Chiefs | Josh Martin receives tender    Sun Mar 8, 02:16 AM

Free-agent OLB Josh Martin (Chiefs), an exclusive-rights free agent, was tendered to a one-year contract by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs like what Martin can do on special teams. That's why they tendered him a one-year contract.

Chiefs | Unlikely to sign Ndamukong Suh    Fri Mar 6, 05:45 PM

Detroit Lions impending free-agent DT Ndamukong Suh is unlikely to be signed by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs should be focused on the offensive side of the ball. They've franchise tagged OLB Justin Houston, and now they'll see if they can keep center Rodney Hudson and perhaps add a WR like Jeremy Maclin in free agency.

Chiefs | KC interested in Brian Hartline    Fri Mar 6, 05:41 PM

Free-agent WR Brian Hartline (Dolphins) is attracting interest from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Footballguys view: Of course he is. The Chiefs are desperate for WR help, and Hartline's price tag won't be out of this world. If added, the Chiefs could still have interest in a big-money free agent WR like Randall Cobb or Jeremy Maclin.

Chiefs | Joe Mays released    Thu Mar 5, 05:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Joe Mays was cut Thursday, March 5.

Footballguys view: Mays is shot out of a cannon as a run-defender, but he guesses--and guesses wrong--a lot. Some team may be interested in the two-down thumper.

Chiefs | Kansas City may cut Dwayne Bowe    Thu Mar 5, 11:31 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe my be cut if the team can not trade him.

Footballguys view: Bowe comes with a $14 million cap hit this year. There's $9 million left in dead money on his contract. Bowe is a good wide receiver when motivated, but that has been a problem for him during his pro career. We can't imagine a ton of teams interested in adding Bowe with his contract being that big.

Chiefs | KC might take run at Randall Cobb    Wed Mar 4, 10:24 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are expected to make a run at Green Bay Packers impending free-agent WR Randall Cobb should he hit the open market.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need as much help as they can get at the WR position. No wide receiver caught a touchdown pass for the Chiefs in 2014, and they need to work diligently to change that. We could see Cobb or Jeremy Maclin (Eagles) be targets for the Chiefs. They also may target a wide receiver in the 2015 NFL draft.

Chiefs | Justin Houston franchise tagged    Mon Mar 2, 09:40 AM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston had the franchise tag placed on him Monday, March 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs aren't going to let one of the best pass-rushers in the league move on in free agency. They'll work diligently to get something done with Houston, but now they're also going to turn their attention to keeping center Rodney Hudson.

Chiefs | Justin Houston moving closer to tag status    Sun Mar 1, 02:18 AM

Free-agent LB Justin Houston (Chiefs) is moving closer to franchise tag status with the Kansas City Chiefs. There were rumors talks on a new deal had begun, but sources indicate the rumors are false and the team will likely slap the tag on Houston.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs aren't going to let Houston go. He'll likely be tagged, and the team will have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal.

Chiefs | Meet with Kurt Coleman's rep    Fri Feb 27, 02:27 AM

Free-agent SS Kurt Coleman (Chiefs) had his representative meet with the Kansas City Chiefs at the NFL Scouting Combine, and talks were positive. Coleman is likely seeking a deal that pays up to $2 million per season.

Footballguys view: Coleman had a good year as a reserve safety for the Chiefs last year. He led the team with three interceptions even though he only played 396 of a possible 1,086 defensive snaps in 2014.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce to have bigger role    Thu Feb 26, 05:36 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce, who led the team with 67 catches and 862 receiving yards in 2014, is expected to be a more prominent part of the passing offense in 2015 after the team released TE Anthony Fasano Thursday, Feb. 26. Kelce was in the lineup for roughly 65% of the snaps last year. However, the Chiefs were most effective with three tight ends in the lineup last year, so they may shop for another tight end in the draft of in free agency.

Footballguys view: Kelce was supposed to have a bigger role last season but that rarely was the case, so we'll believe it when we see it. That said, having him as a tight end on your roster could pay off big later on once everything is settled. It's not outlandish to have Kelce as your top TE in 2015 as he has the potential to finish as a top-3 player at his position.

Chiefs | Met with Rodney Hudson's agent    Tue Feb 24, 07:27 AM

Chiefs | Interest in Benardrick McKinney    Tue Feb 24, 06:46 AM

Chiefs | KC interested in Justin Hardy    Sun Feb 22, 07:59 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are reportedly very high on East Carolina WR Justin Hardy, according to sources at the NFL Combine.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs need all the help they can get at the WR position. Hardy would be a good fit as he's an explosive player who can adjust to poorly thrown passes. More than 70 percent of Hardy's catches went for a first down in 2014. He's likely to be a third- or fourth-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Chiefs | Ron Parker in talks with team    Sat Feb 21, 03:12 AM

Free-agent CB Ron Parker (Chiefs) is in talks with the Kansas City Chiefs to return to the club in 2015. Parker wants $6 million a season in his contract.

Footballguys view: It would be a wise move for the Chiefs to keep Parker around. He finished second on the team in tackles last year (94 total), starting 15 games (11 at safety) for Kansas City. Parker subbed in for Eric Berry from Weeks 3 to 9 while Berry recovered from a high ankle sprain. He then made the move to strong safety after Berry was placed on the non-football injury list after being diagnosed with lymphoma in Week 13. At this time, it's unknown if Berry will play in 2015.

Chiefs | Have interest in Keith Mumphrey    Fri Feb 20, 11:56 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs have interviewed wide receiver Keith Mumphrey (Michigan State) at the 2015 NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: While Mumphrey wouldn't be the answer to fixing Kansas City's passing offense from a weapons standpoint, he could be a solid addition overall. He runs very good routes and has solid size, but he lacks the athleticism to be a high-level productive wideout. He might get drafted but he's going to be a long-shot to be an impact player.

Chiefs | Chiefs high on Dorial Green-Beckham    Thu Feb 19, 10:11 PM

University of Oklahoma WR Dorial Green-Beckham is drawing interest from the Kansas City Chiefs. 'Physically, we think he has all the gifts in the world,' Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said Thursday, Feb. 19. 'We've all admired him. All of us who have been in the state of Missouri and the Kansas City area have seen him afar, have admired his physical traits. I think now what people want to do is get a feel for him as a person, see where he is at this state. Just see where he is, that's what we are doing. We will be meeting him in the next couple days and I look forward to it.'

Footballguys view: Green-Beckham is a phenomenal talent, but off-field issues will make his draft stock fall. The Chiefs have a huge need at the wide receiver position, and Green-Beckham makes a lot of sense for them.

Chiefs | Waive A.J. Jenkins     Tue Feb 17, 02:02 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs waived WR A.J. Jenkins Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Footballguys view: Jenkins has now washed out with two teams, and his NFL future is in serious doubt. Originally a first-round pick by the 49ers in 2012, Jenkins has never been able to translate his speed and agility into actual production. With so many good wide receivers already in the league, we can't imagine teams being hot and heavy to add a disappointment like Jenkins.

Chiefs | Chiefs, Justin Houston talking at combine     Mon Feb 16, 11:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Justin Houston's representation is expected to meet with the team at the NFL Scouting Combine to discuss a contract extension, and a source familiar with the situation said the Chiefs will not designate Houston with a franchise tender prior to the meeting.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs could use the franchise tag on Houston. He's one of the best pass-rushers in the game today, and Houston is coming off a 22-sack season. There's no way the Chiefs are going to let that kind of talent and production walk in free agency.

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent LB Justin Houston's agent is expected to talk with the Chiefs this week about a possible long-term contract for Houston, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are expected to place the franchise tag on Houston if the two sides are not able to reach an agreement on a new deal. That would give them until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal with Houston.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Bray (knee) likely will not be an option for the No. 2 quarterback job since he will miss offseason workouts and training camp because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Bray just isn't that good. He's got a strong arm, but he struggles to throw it in the ocean standing on the beach.

Chiefs | Jason Avant's future in KC uncertain    Sun Feb 8, 07:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent WR Jason Avant is viewed as a good influence in the locker room, but the team must decide if they will try to upgrade.

Footballguys view: LOL. The team needs a huge upgrade at the wide receiver position. They are mostly terrible at the spot, and they passed on selecting a WR last year in the draft in what will go down as one of the best WR classes (if not THE best) in NFL history.

Chiefs | KC to decide on Rodney Hudson soon    Sun Feb 8, 07:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs impending free-agent C Rodney Hudson could fetch more than $7 million per season at the outset of free agency.   Chiefs | Justin Houston likely to be tagged    Sun Feb 8, 04:21 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OLB Justin Houston is likely to receive the franchise tag before free agency gets underway next month.

Footballguys view: The franchise tag should cost the Chiefs roughly $13.1 million in 2015. That gives Houston a one-year fully guaranteed salary, but it also gives the Chiefs until July 15th to work out a new long-term contract with their talented pass-rusher.
