Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes to focus on footwork    Sat Jun 15, 11:28 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes said that he would work on his footwork during the period between minicamp and training camp. He said that he misses many plays because his feet are in the wrong position and he relies too heavily on his arm.

Footballguys view: Mahomes has the arm strength to make any throw from almost any platform. Falling back on that arm strength is something quarterbacks with big arms do all the time. Mahomes will work on his mechanics to enhance his accuracy. His completion percentage of 66.0 in 2018 ranked 23rd in the league.

Chiefs | KC signs three    Sat Jun 15, 02:25 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed undrafted free agents FB Josh Caldwell (Northwest Missouri State) and OG Abdul Beecham (Kansas State) as well as free-agent LB D'Juan Hines (Browns) on Friday, June 14.

Chiefs | Byron Pringle impressing    Fri Jun 14, 11:42 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Byron Pringle has made plays this offseason and performed well in the preseason last year before suffering an injury.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs will have opportunity to make the team as a fifth receiver even if Tyreek Hill is there Week 1, and Hill's murky future could encourage them to keep a sixth. Sammy Watkins injury history could also be a path to playing time behind Demarcus Robinson and second round pick Mecole Hardman. We'll pay attention to any Chiefs receiver that has a chance to make the team.

Kansas City Chiefs LB Gary Johnson, OT Justin Senior and RB James Williams were waived Thursday, June 13.

Chiefs | Neal Sterling finds home with Kansas City    Thu Jun 13, 04:38 PM

Free-agent TE Neal Sterling (Jets) signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday, June 13.

Footballguys view: We'll see how Sterling does now with a real chance to earn a spot on the Chiefs 53-man roster. They have no real option behind Travis Kelce at the tight end position. Sterling was released by the Jets just a couple of days ago and didn't stay on the open market that long.

Chiefs | Carlos Hyde lines up with Damien Williams    Wed Jun 12, 11:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Carlos Hyde is listed as the backup to RB Damien Williams, but he has been busy at minicamp, lining up along with Williams in the teams backfield on occasion. He has been used as a receiver. 'For a running back like me who likes to catch the ball, it would be like a dream come true,' Hyde said Wednesday, June 12.

Footballguys view: Williams is the Chiefs back Fantasy GMs are going nuts for...and we get it. In that offense with Williams skill set it could mean big fantasy points. However, everyone needs to know that the Chiefs staff loves the addition of Hyde this offseason. He could push for a larger role than most think. Right now, Williams has an ADP of RB12 (2.07) and Hyde is going off the board at RB45 (10.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Undrafted free-agent FB Josh Caldwell (Northwest Missouri State) and OG Abdul Beecham (Kansas State) are also trying out for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Mitchell Schwartz signs extension    Wed Jun 12, 11:24 AM

Kansas City Chiefs OT Mitchell Schwartz signed a one-year extension Wednesday, June 12, through the 2021 season. Schwartz's one-year extension is worth $11.255 million and both years are fully guaranteed.

Footballguys view: It's an interesting move for the Chiefs since Schwartz had two years remaining on his contract. Now signed through 2021, Schwartz should continue to play at a high level at right tackle. He's never missed a snap in his career and is one of the best in the game at his position.

Chiefs | Chris Jones absent    Tue Jun 11, 10:25 AM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Chris D. Jones isn't at the team's facility Tuesday, June 11, and isn't expected to be at mandatory minicamp.

Footballguys view: Jones is one of the best in the game at his position. A second-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Jones is due only $1.9 million in the final year of his rookie contract. He has been staying away from offseason workouts as he waits for a new contract. Now that the work being missed is mandatory, fines will be implemented 'on paper' but we imagine those will be dismissed once Jones gets his new deal. Talks have stalled at this point, but the Chiefs will have to find a way to get things done.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill still could face punishment    Sun Jun 9, 12:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill still could face league punishment even though a local district attorney said Friday, June 7, he is no longer the subject of an active criminal investigation involving domestic-abuse allegations. The NFL's Personal Conduct Policy, as written, entails the league can, and will, investigate and punish a player for domestic violence even if he's never arrested or charged. The NFL also can, and will, punish a player for domestic misconduct that does not involve actual violence has been demonstrated by precedents.

Footballguys view: It is difficult to see a scenario where Hill avoids at least a 4-8 game suspension based on the league's previous handling of similar high profile incidents where no charges were filed. The bigger question is whether he ends up on the commissioner's exempt list, which would keep him off of the field indefinitely. While the Chiefs have him suspended from team activities, there's no need for Roger Goodell to take that step, but if they attempt have him at team facilities, the league could step in. It doesn't appear at this point that the Chiefs are considering releasing Hill, but that could obviously change pending the results of the ongoing child services investigation.

Chiefs | Travis Kelce to sit out mini-camp    Sat Jun 8, 02:44 AM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (ankle) is unlikely to participate in the team's mandatory mini-camp next week, according to head coach Andy Reid, who indicated Kelce should be back for training camp.

Footballguys view: Kelce is recovering from ankle surgery that he had back in March. It was called a 'clean up' procedure and he was always likely to miss all offseason work. The plan was for him to be back by training camp.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill likely to show up for minicamp    Fri Jun 7, 02:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is expected to practice with the team during minicamp next week as there appear to be 'no signs' his status will change between now and then, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs may not take any action on their own despite the optics on Hill looking very bad at this point. This situation could change at any moment, but for now it appears Kansas City is planning on keeping Hill.

Chiefs | Tyreek Hill not under investigation    Fri Jun 7, 12:44 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Tyreek Hill is currently not under investigation for child abuse it was revealed Friday, June 7. 'It is not an active investigation,' Johnson County District Attorney Steve Howe said in an email Friday to the Kansas City Star. 'As in any case, if we receive additional evidence, we reevaluate.'

Footballguys view: He is still under investigation by the Kansas Department for Children and Families. The Chiefs and the NFL will likely wait to act until the investigation has completed. He is not on the commissioner's exempt list, but Hill has been suspended from all team activities indefinitely.

Chiefs | Khalen Saunders signs rookie deal    Mon Jun 3, 11:37 AM

Kansas City Chiefs third-round pick DT Khalen Saunders signed his rookie deal Monday, June 3. The four-year deal is worth $3,673,180 with a $915,180 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Saunders is your traditional nose tackle. He measures in at 6'0" 324 pounds and is incredibly difficult to move on the inside of the line. Saunders can get off the ball quickly for a big man and did a good job of creating interior pressure in college at Western Illinois. We'll see if he can translate those tools to the pros.

Chiefs | Damien Williams locked in as starter    Thu May 30, 02:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Damien Williams is 'our starter' and someone the team expects to 'excel in that role,' according to offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy.

Footballguys view: Williams can do some good things as a runner and a receiver out of the backfield. Fantasy GMs are excited about what he can do in 2019. Williams is currently going off the board at RB13 (2.10) in 12-team PPR leagues. Don't forget about Carlos Hyde, his likely backup this season. If Williams falters or gets banged up, Hyde could step in and take over. At the least, Hyde is a valuable handcuff for Fantasy GMs who play in deeper leagues.

Chiefs | T.J. Linta officially let go    Wed May 29, 01:42 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs QB T.J. Linta (ankle) was waived with an injury settlement on Tuesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: Linta has the prototypical size and arm strength to make for a practice squad/developmental quarterback. When healthy, we'll see if another team is willing to take a chance on the young quarterback. The 49ers (among other teams) did work him out before the 2019 NFL draft.

Chiefs | John Phillips set free by KC    Tue May 28, 05:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE John Phillips was released Tuesday, May 28.

Kansas City Chiefs QB T.J. Linta (ankle) will be waived with an injury settlement, according to a report Tuesday, May 28.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs had six quarterbacks on their roster and are now down to five with Linta's release. A small-school prospect from Wagner, Linta has the prototypical size and arm strength to make for a practice squad/developmental quarterback. When healthy, we'll see if another team is willing to take a chance on the young quarterback. The 49ers (among other teams) did work him out before the 2019 NFL draft.

Free-agent TE John Phillips (Cardinals) signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, May 20, according to a source. DB Dontae Johnson was released to make room for him on the roster.

Footballguys view: Phillips is a seasoned veteran who has been around the block. A sixth-round pick out of Virginia in the 2009 NFL draft, this will be the sixth team Phillips has been a part of. He's a big-bodied blocker with a single season career high of 15 catches back in 2011 when he was with the Cowboys. Phillips will block for the Chiefs and is not a fantasy factor whatsoever.

Chiefs | Darwin Thompson making plays    Fri May 17, 10:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Darwin Thompson was a 'playmaker in the passing game' during rookie minicamp, according to B.J. Kissel of Chiefs.com.

Footballguys view: Thompson has the makings to be a perfect change-of-pace back for the Chiefs. He's 5'8" 200 pounds and doesn't shy away from running inside. He's got great feet and that helps him run through trash or set up defenders in the open field. We'll keep an eye on him in PPR dynasty formats.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jamal Custis was able to use his size and basketball background to make catches in traffic throughout rookie minicamp, according to B.J. Kissel of Chiefs.com.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Syracuse in 2019, Custis has a good size/speed combination, running a 4.5 second 40-yard dash while measuring in at 6'4" 215 pounds. He can naturally high point catches and knows how to box out smaller defenders. Custis is a big slot receiver, playing around 40 percent of his snaps last year at that position. Keep an eye on him in deep dynasty formats.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe to retire with Kansas City    Thu May 16, 09:03 PM

Free-agent WR Dwayne Bowe (Browns) signed a one-day contract with the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday, May 16, to announce his retirement.

Footballguys view: Bowe hadn't played in the NFL since 2015 during his one season with the Browns. His career had some highlights, including a 2010 season where he had over 1,100 yards receiving and a whopping 15 touchdowns. However, things fell apart towards the end and that's the way many may remember him. A first-round pick of the Chiefs in the 2007 NFL draft, Bowe now officially moves on to the next chapter of his life.

The Kansas City Chiefs have agreed to acquire LB Darron Lee from the New York Jets in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs have been working diligently this offseason to revamp their defense. Lee has been a disappointment so far during his pro career, but we'll see if a fresh start in a contract year helps turn things around for the 2016 first-round pick.

Chiefs | EJ Manuel calling it quits    Mon May 13, 05:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB EJ Manuel announced his retirement Monday, May 13.

Footballguys view: Manuel spent all of last year out of football but latched on with the Chiefs in late February. Instead of competing to be a backup, Manuel decided to call it a day. A first-round pick of the Bills in the 2013 NFL draft, Manuel saw injuries and inconsistencies derail his career. He finishes with 3,767 passing yards, 20 passing touchdowns and 16 interceptions as a pro and a 6-12 record as a starter with the Bills and the Raiders.

Chiefs | Patrick Mahomes created magic outside pocket    Tue May 7, 11:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes threw for an NFL-best 1,155 yards outside of the pocket in 2018, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Mahomes had 14 passing touchdowns compared to just 4 interceptions on such passes. Advanced data just backs up what everyone sees on film here -- Mahomes is really good outside the pocket. We don't see any defense really containing him that much in 2019 and he's obviously a QB1 from a fantasy perspective.

Free-agent WR Rashard Davis signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, May 7. The Chiefs also waived WRs Andre Lindsey and Jamire Jordan as well as DBs Leon McQuay III and Dakari Monroe.

Footballguys view: The Raiders just waived Davis on April 30th. Originally an undrafted free agent out of James Madison in 2017, Davis has spent time with the Raiders and the Eagles. He was on Philadelphia's practice squad when they won Super Bowl 52. We'll see if the speedy wide receiver and return man can do enough to earn a spot with the Chiefs.

Free-agent DBs Herb Miller III and Andrew Soroh and RB Marcus Marshall signed contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs on Tuesday, May 7. Terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Marshall began his career at Georgia Tech before winding up at James Madison. A 200-pound all-purpose back, Marshall rushed for 1,296 yards and 17 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He made some big plays running to the perimeter in college and will now try and translate his skill set to the pros.

Chiefs | Mecole Hardman makes good first impression    Tue May 7, 02:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs second-round WR Mecole Hardman got off to a rough start in rookie minicamp Saturday, May 4 - showing rawness in his routes, mishandling a couple of punts during individual return drills and dropping a couple catches off easy throws - but he was fielding punts cleanly and making difficult, leaping catches just over the goal line during red-zone drills by Monday, May 6, according to Brooke Pryor of the Kansas City Star.'Every day he got a little better. ... These routes are new to him. He did a nice job in the red zone, which normally is the toughest place to work, but he did extremely well there. He had a good finish,' head coach Andy Reid said.

Footballguys view: This is a great sign for the young playmaker and the Chiefs offense. Who knows what in the world is going to happen to Tyreek Hill. The NFL may suspend him, the Chiefs may release him...or things could work out where Hill remains with the Chiefs and continues to shine on offense. Hardman is there as an insurance policy in case Hill is no longer with the team or suspended. The rookie from Georgia has a ton of speed and can get vertical in a hurry. Any piece of this offense, especially one with the talent of Hardman, should excite Fantasy GMs in any format.

Kansas City Chiefs second-round WR Mecole Hardman, sixth-round DB Rashad Fenton, sixth-round RB Darwin Thompson and seventh-round OG Nick Allegretti signed four-year contracts with the Kansas City Chiefs on Monday, May 6. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs added a couple of weapons to their offense in the 2019 NFL draft. Hardman is the player to watch here, especially if Tyreek Hill is suspended by the league during the regular season. He's a speedy wide receiver who can take the top off the defense, and Hardman can work as a return man too. Thompson is a 200-pound grinder who does a good job of maintaining balance upon contact.

Chiefs | Chase Litton showing off arm    Sun May 5, 08:45 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Chase Litton has 'fired some strikes' and completing tough throws in traffic during rookie minicamp, according to B.J. Kissel of Chiefs.com.

Footballguys view: Litton is your classic big-bodied pocket passer. He has enough arm talent to stick around in the NFL, perhaps on the Chiefs practice squad this year. In college at Marshall, Litton fired a lot of passes into coverage. He stands tall in the pocket and is not afraid of the rush, but Litton does lock onto targets and throws a lot of picks. We'll see if Andy Reid can help that and get something out of the long-shot quarterback.

Chiefs | Cody Thompson playing well    Sun May 5, 08:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Cody Thompson has be one of the best performers during rookie minicamp, according to B.J. Kissel of Chiefs.com.

Footballguys view: Thompson suffered a broken leg in 2017 and didn't look quite as quick in 2018 at Toledo. He is a strong slot receiver with great hands and concentration. We'll be monitoring him in deep dynasty formats.

Chiefs | Kansas City signs nine UDFAs    Sat May 4, 01:38 PM

Linta (Wagner) and CB Dakari Monroe (San Jose State) signed with the Kansas City Chiefs Saturday, May 4. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Linta is an interesting prospect who impressed scouts in the pre-draft process. He's smart and has good arm strength, but his completion percentage (around 51 percent at Wagner) could use a lot of improvement.
