Chiefs | Jamaal Charles is 14th highest-paid back    Tue Jul 22, 08:44 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is scheduled to earn $3.9 million this year, which ranks 14th among running backs. ESPN.com is reporting that Charles and the team are discussing a new contract.

Footballguys view: Adding in bonus money, Charles has a $5.2 million cap number in 2014. This actually makes him the 13th ranked RB in terms of average annual salary ($4.6 million).

Chiefs | Team believes Jamaal Charles will report    Tue Jul 22, 08:28 PM

Updating a previous report, the Kansas City Chiefs believe RB Jamaal Charles will report to training camp Wednesday, July 23, whether a contract extension has been reached or not, a source told Terez A. Paylor of The Kansas City Star.

Footballguys view: This conflicts with an earlier report from a Kansas City TV station. Charles is looking to make more money, and he feels underpaid at his current average annual salary of $4.6 million. At this time, the Chiefs have around $9 million in cap space. They are looking to get a deal done with Justin Houston in addition to Charles. We'll see if they can do some salary-cap gymnastics to get both paid.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles to hold out    Tue Jul 22, 07:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles will not report to training camp, according to a source. Charles is reportedly holding out for more money.

Footballguys view: Huge news here. Charles is currently signed through 2015, and he has a $5.2 million cap number in 2014. He is the 13th ranked RB in terms of average annual salary ($4.6 million). Other sources are reporting that Charles is going to show up to camp on time, so we'll have to wait and see what actually happens here.

Chiefs | Two likely to compete for one spot    Tue Jul 22, 09:10 AM

Kansas City Chiefs QBs Tyler Bray and Chase Daniel are likely to compete for one roster spot with QB Aaron Murray likely to make the team behind starting QB Alex Smith.

Footballguys view: A very interesting note here. Murray is smart and accurate even though he lacks size and athleticism. The rookie is coming back from the knee injury he suffered last year at Georgia, but reports say that he feels good. Bray has a rocket arm but little accuracy. Daniel has the most experience here, but it sounds like he's fighting for a roster spot. Most thought Daniel was a lock for QB2 in Kansas City with Murray and Bray fighting for the QB3 (developmental) spot.

Chiefs | De'Anthony Thomas works mostly with RBs    Mon Jul 21, 01:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB De'Anthony Thomas spent most of his time with the running backs during practice Monday, July 21. Thomas run a lot of passing routes out of the backfield and motioned out of the back field at times during plays.

Footballguys view: The speedy rookie is listed as a running back, but he's more like Dexter McCluster used to be for the Chiefs--an offensive weapon. Thomas was drafted this year since McCluster left in free agency. We're not expecting much from the rookie this year, but we are intrigued by how his skill set will translate to the pro level. McCluster is not as fast, but he's quicker and a better runner in cramped space than Thomas was at Oregon.

Chiefs | Several injuries practice    Mon Jul 21, 01:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce (knee), WR Kyle Williams (knee), WR A.J. Jenkins (hamstring) and CB Christopher Owens (hamstring) participated in practice Monday, July 21.

Footballguys view: The team really likes Kelce, and he should be the starter at tight end if healthy this year. Kelce is tough and knows how to use his size in order to "box out" defenders. The Chiefs desperately need weapons in the passing game besides Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles. We'll see if Kelce can be that guy. Keep him as a low-end TE2 with upside or on your waiver wire speed dial this year.

Chiefs | Aaron Murray says he is ready to go    Mon Jul 21, 01:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Aaron Murray (knee) said he will be fully able to participate once training camp practices begin.

Footballguys view: We're intrigued by Murray as a developmental prospect. He's smart and accurate, but Murray is not tall and lacks a rocket arm. His ultimate upside might only be that of a career backup. We'll see if he can beat out Tyler Bray for the third-string job in Kansas City.

Chiefs | Two to PUP    Mon Jul 21, 12:09 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Joe McKnight (knee) and CB David Van Dyke (hamstring) were placed on the preseason Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Camp PUP is much different than regular-season PUP. McKnight and Van Dyke can come off the list at any time.

Chiefs | Joe McKnight had surgery    Mon Jul 21, 08:20 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Joe McKnight (knee) had arthroscopic knee surgery after minicamp ended last month and is close to returning to practice.

Footballguys view: McKnight is trying to get his career back on track with a fresh start with the Chiefs. He spent last year out of football, but could make the Chiefs final roster as a reserve running back and return man.

Chiefs | Aaron Murray still wearing brace    Sun Jul 20, 03:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Aaron Murray (knee) will continue to wear a brace on his knee while taking snaps in practice.

Footballguys view: Murray is coming back from an ACL injury he suffered last year at the University of Georgia. He's a smart and accurate quarterback who lacks size, arm strength and athleticism. Murray could be a quality backup in the NFL, but it's difficult to project him as anything more than that.

Chiefs | Alex Smith hopes to get extension done    Thu Jul 17, 04:49 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith said he hopes to get a contract extension done because he likes the team and coaching staff.

Footballguys view: Smith is in the final year of his contract, and the Chiefs will have to find the right price to keep him around. The veteran quarterback wants an annual salary around what Jay Cutler ($18 million annually) got from the Bears. Adam Teicher, Chiefs blogger for ESPN, believes the Chiefs only want to pay Smith around $15 million per year. The Chiefs would like to get something done before the start of the regular season, but they could always franchise tag Smith next offseason if they need to.

Chiefs | Justin Houston could change mind on holdout    Thu Jul 17, 03:56 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs LB Justin Houston could still decide to hold out at the start of training camp if he does not receive a contract extension, according to a source. Houston is expected to report to camp on time at this point.

Footballguys view: If he skips any time in training camp, he'll be facing fines of $30,000 per day. He also must report to the team within 30 days of Week 1 to ensure he'll become a free agent in 2015.

Chiefs | No offers to Justin Houston yet    Wed Jul 16, 01:13 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs have been talking with LB Justin Houston about a contract extension but have not made him an offer at this point, according to a source. The team could make an offer to Houston during training camp.

Footballguys view: Houston is due $1.4 million in 2014, and is in the final year of his contract. He skipped all offseason workouts--including mandatory minicamp--to express displeasure with his contract. If he skips any time in training camp, he'll be facing fines of $30,000 per day. He also must report to the team within 30 days of Week 1 to ensure he'll become a free agent in 2015. Sources indicate Houston will show up for the start of training camp, and the Chiefs could come to a new contract agreement with him at some point in the near future.

Chiefs | Demetrius Harris carving out a role    Tue Jul 15, 11:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Demetrius Harris looks like a player ready to contribute this season, according to head coach Andy Reid. Meanwhile, Adam Teicher of ESPN.com believes Harris could receive plenty of looks if TE Travis Kelce (knee) is unable to play or is limited.

Footballguys view: Harris is another basketball-to-football convert who is trying to make a name for himself in the NFL. Signed as an undrafted free agent in 2013 (and weighing only 225 pounds), Harris has added weight to his frame and now checks in at 257 pounds. At 6'7" he can certainly pluck passes "above the rim" and has been working hard to learn how to transition his basketball skill set to the football field. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should be monitoring his progress in training camp and in the preseason.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe tuning up for camp    Mon Jul 14, 09:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe worked out with Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald Monday, July 14, during Fitzgerald's annual workouts at the University of Minnesota.

Footballguys view: So long as Dwayne Bowe cares, he can be a good fantasy play. Bowe has struggled with motivation at times during his career, but it sounds like that's not going to be a problem for him in 2014. The Chiefs need him in a bad way because they lack talent in the wide receiver corps behind Bowe. His current ADP is WR42 (9.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Joe Mays top candidate to start at ILB    Sun Jul 13, 08:33 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Joe Mays appears to be the leading candidate to start at inside linebacker next to LB Derrick Johnson this upcoming season.

Footballguys view: Mays is shot out of a cannon against the run, but he struggles in coverage. The veteran knows the division well from his days playing with the Denver Broncos, and he will help the Chiefs as a two-down thumper only.

Chiefs | May have competition at RG    Sun Jul 13, 08:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OGs Rishaw Johnson and Zach Fulton could compete for the starting right guard job during training camp. Fulton took some snaps with the first-team offense during offseason workouts.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe did well during workouts    Sun Jul 13, 08:29 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe looked great during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: If Dwayne Bowe cares, he's awesome. The problem with Bowe has always been motivation. His effort seems to run hot and cold from year to year, game to game or play to play. If he's dialed in, Bowe can be a dominant force and a WR1 for your fantasy team. The Chiefs need him more than ever as they have a poor group of wideouts behind him. Bowe's current ADP of WR42 (9.07 in 12-team PPR leagues) makes him a nice value play if he hits.

Chiefs | Cyrus Gray will have to compete for spot    Sun Jul 13, 08:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Cyrus Gray will have to hold off RB Joe McKnight during training camp if he wants to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Nothing to really worry about here for most fantasy owners. Gray is a good all-purpose back to monitor in super deep dynasty leagues, but that's about it. The primary backup behind Jamaal Charles is second-year pro Knile Davis. Fantasy owners should handcuff him to Charles if roster depth allows it.

Chiefs | Tyler Bray expected to push for No. 2 job    Sun Jul 13, 08:20 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Tyler Bray is expected to push QB Chase Daniel for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Bray has a rocket arm, but he's struggled with maturity and consistency. He's got arguably the best physical tools of any QB on the roster (yes, including Alex Smith), but he may lack the football intelligence to play up to his potential. In college at Tennessee, Bray was often bailed out by his incredible wide receivers like Cordarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter. He doesn't have a group like that in Kansas City. We're not high on Bray's dynasty value, but keep an eye on him in the preseason to see if he's improved his raw game.

Chiefs | Two cornerbacks on the bubble    Sat Jul 12, 09:17 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB DeMarcus Van Dyke will have to show he can handle man-press coverage in order to make the roster, and CB David Van Dyke could be headed for the practice squad as he attempts to make the transition from safety to cornerback.

Footballguys view: The cousins have dreamed of playing together at any level, and now they get their chance. It seems like there's only one spot available at the time, so playing on the same team may not come to fruition when final cuts are being made. DeMarcus has the experience advantage as he was a third-round pick by the Oakland Raiders in 2011. David was an undrafted rookie out of Tennessee State this year and might be better suited to land on the practice squad this year.

Chiefs | Tamba Hali working extra, staying motivated    Thu Jul 10, 05:01 PM

Kansas City Chiefs LB Tamba Hali said he's been working two extra hours per day in order to 'stay on top of things and not slack.' He added that he still has a lot to accomplish in his career and that's what keeps him going during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Weight has been an issue for Hali (and he showed up to OTAs overweight again) and maybe selecting Dee Ford was the shot across the bow Hali needed. Of course, he needs to perform on the field so we'll see how things sit when the pads come on.

Chiefs | De'Anthony Thomas has plenty of confidence    Mon Jul 7, 09:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB De'Anthony Thomas said winning Rookie of the Year is among his goals this season. 'I'm a player that nobody's ever seen step on the football field,' he said.

Footballguys view: Thomas could do it if no rookies have big debut campaigns and he makes a big impact in the return game and offense. It's a long shot, but he should get a chance to at least touch the ball and see the field, which is more than a lot of rookies.

Chiefs | Albert Wilson could make roster    Mon Jul 7, 09:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Albert Wilson said he chose to sign with the team because head coach Andy Reid said he had a good chance to make the roster, and Reid praised Wilson following rookie minicamp. 'I like Albert Wilson,' Reid said. 'I like his athletic ability. He's very strong, even though he's not the tallest guy. And he runs fast.'

Footballguys view: The Chiefs long-term WR2 spot is wide open with Donnie Avery's drops and AJ Jenkins' stalled out development. Deep dynasty leaguers should be tracking Wilson's progress in camp and the preseason.

Chiefs | Sean McGrath may be on bubble    Sat Jul 5, 12:01 PM

Kansas City Chiefs TE Sean McGrath likely will be on the roster bubble if TEs Anthony Fasano and Travis Kelce (knee) are healthy during training camp. McGrath will be competing with TE Demetrius Harris for a spot on the final roster.

Chiefs | Would like to use more two-TE sets    Sat Jul 5, 11:56 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs would like to use more two-tight end sets this upcoming season if TE Travis Kelce (knee) is healthy.

Footballguys view: Kelce is a talented move tight end, but his rookie season was lost due to injury. If healthy, Kelce could make for a decent TE2 with upside. KC lacks weapons in the passing game, and they could really use a healthy Kelce.

Chiefs | Rokevious Watkins suspended four games    Thu Jul 3, 03:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs OG Rokevious Watkins was suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Footballguys view: Watkins was depth at most, so it won't kill the Chiefs although we're still a little concerned about the offensive line since they lost Brandon Albert and Jon Asamoah in free agency.

Chiefs | Mike Catapano adds weight    Wed Jul 2, 04:02 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DE Mike Catapano has added ten pounds this offseason and is more motivated than he ever has been before to have a strong season. Catapano wants to earn the coaches confidence in 2014. "That's on me, to build the coaches' trust in me," Catapano said. "They want to know I'm not a liability against the run. They want to know I'm rocking and rolling on all cylinders."

Chiefs | Husain Abdullah motivated for new season    Tue Jul 1, 03:17 PM

Chiefs | Dontari Poe receives praise    Tue Jul 1, 02:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe was praised by head coach Andy Reid recently. Reid said to get Poe off the field you have to pull him off and that he is 'not one to tap out.' Reid added that there was no decline in Poe's play later on last season, despite how often Poe was on the field. Poe should continue to see plenty of work again this season as the Chiefs did not add a nose tackle to take Poe's place.

Footballguys view: Poe is a mountain of a man who can dominate at the point of attack. He'll regularly take up two blockers and stuff the run in the middle. Poe is also quick enough and strong enough to get some interior push on the quarterback.

  Chiefs | Laurent Duvernay-Tardif is a long-term project    Mon Jun 30, 05:10 PM

Chiefs | Will find ways to get De'Anthony Thomas involved    Thu Jun 26, 03:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB De'Anthony Thomas should be the kickoff and punt returner in 2014. The Chiefs are making an effort to involve Thomas and put his speed to use. His size (5-foot-8, 174 pounds) is a concern, so there is a limit on how much he can be used.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs lost Dexter McCluster in free agency to the Titans, so they needed to add a similar weapon in the draft. Thomas is likely to see a lot of work out of the slot, with some screens and dump passes out of the backfield - anything to get him the ball in space. His fantasy value will be shaky though as he won't get consistent touches.

Chiefs | Mark Harrison signs    Fri Jun 20, 10:57 AM

The Kansas City Chiefs signed free-agent WR Mark Harrison (Patriots) to an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: Hey! Finally the Chiefs get some help at the wide receiver position. Harrison is a big target who can fly down the field and track the ball over his shoulder. He also has the size (6'3" 230 pounds) to be a force in the red zone. If healthy and motivated he could make the team and possibly contribute in 2014. Fantasy owners in dynasty leagues need to monitor this closely.

Chiefs | Secondary shaping up    Sun Jun 15, 05:19 PM

Kansas City Chiefs CB Sean Smith, CB Marcus Cooper, SS Eric Berry and FS Husain Abdullah have been starting in the secondary in base defenses. That alignment is expected to remain when the season opens.

Footballguys view: This is the new look secondary now that Brandon Flowers has been released. The Chiefs are in a pass-happy division and have to face the league's most high-powered pass game when they play the Broncos twice a year. We'll see if these guys are up to the challenge.

Chiefs | Like Junior Hemingway in the slot    Sun Jun 15, 05:16 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs like WR Junior Hemingway more as a slot receiver than on the outside.

Footballguys view: Hemingway fits better as a slot receiver because he can get a clean release off motion. He's not going to get much separation when jammed at the line of scrimmage. We'll see him compete for playing time with A.J. Jenkins, Weston Dressler and Kyle Williams this year.

  Chiefs | A.J. Jenkins hasn't seized opportunity    Sun Jun 15, 05:16 PM

Kansas City Chiefs WR A.J. Jenkins has yet to challenge WR Donnie Avery for the No. 2 wide receiver spot.

Footballguys view: Is anyone surprised? Jenkins was a surprise first-round pick by the 49ers in 2012 and he failed to make an impact. He's a nice reserve receiver, but to expect him to be any sort of quality starter is folly.

The Kansas City Chiefs have released CB Brandon Flowers.

Chiefs | Dwayne Bowe says he's fit    Fri Jun 13, 08:51 AM

Kansas City Chiefs WR Dwayne Bowe said he's in the best shape of his life and weighs around 210 pounds. He hired a nutritionist and trainer in the offseason for the first time in his career.

Footballguys view: Bowe is the best target in the Chiefs group of wide receivers. The rest of the players on the depth chart are unlikely to be fantasy relevant this year. Bowe's current ADP is WR45 (10.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Kansas City Chiefs WR Weston Dressler (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury in practice Thursday, June 12.
