Steelers | Cameron Heyward a tackling machine    Mon May 25, 11:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers DE Cameron Heyward compiled a career-high 81 tackles in 2019 - the most of any full-time defensive lineman in the league. Heyward's tackle total was 22 more than his previous career high of 59 in 2013.

Steelers | Coach expects more from Benny Snell    Mon May 25, 04:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell should be able to be more productive for the Steelers this upcoming season since he will be more comfortable playing in the NFL, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: The Steelers may reduce the workload for James Conner this year. That leads to more time for Snell (among others). The Steelers have an interesting collection of backs and we'll see how this RBBC shakes out. In addition to Conner and Snell, the team drafted scatback Anthony McFarland out of Maryland this year. They also still have the multi-dimensional Jaylen Samuels in the RB room as well. Let's see how this shakes out in camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Diontae Johnson finished with a bang    Sun May 24, 07:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson tallied 23 catches over the final four weeks of 2019 - good for the eighth-best total by a wide receiver in that span.

Footballguys view: Johnson had to work through three different quarterbacks as a rookie in 2019. He finished the season strong but that wasn't with Ben Roethlisberger. The veteran quarterback returns this year and that should boost everyone's production in the Steelers passing game. Johnson is an up-and-coming talent who could be an even larger force in 2020 and beyond...especially given the uncertain future of JuJu Smith-Schuster after this season.

Steelers | Steven Nelson stingy in coverage    Sun May 24, 05:34 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Steven Nelson allowed completions on only 29 of 62 throws in his coverage in 2019. The resulting 46.8 catch rate by receivers in his coverage was the third-lowest mark allowed by a cornerback who was targeted at least 60 times.

Steelers | James Washington to lose snaps?    Fri May 22, 10:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington will likely lose the most snaps if WR Chase Claypool performs well as a rookie, according to Ed Bouchette of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: Something has to give and we won't see JuJu Smith-Schuster or Diontae Johnson lose snaps. Instead, it could be Washington who gets to run a fewer routes. Claypool is an exciting rookie because of his size/athleticism combination, but Washington is coming off a breakout year. It's a good problem for the Steelers to have but it's something that could be difficult to navigate for Fantasy GMs in deeper leagues.

Steelers | Minkah Fitzpatrick excelled after trade    Wed May 20, 11:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers S Minkah Fitzpatrick surrendered a completion on only six of the 13 passes thrown in his coverage for 77 yards, did not allow a touchdown and intercepted five passes after he was acquired from the Miami Dolphins last September. Prior to the trade, Fitzpatrick allowed completions on all six of the passes thrown in his coverage for 117 yards and three touchdowns.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger being babied by team    Tue May 19, 12:22 PM

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) has been ready to throw for 'some time,' NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said.

Footballguys view: The team has to be cautious with the veteran quarterback. The Steelers coaches have been overly cautious with Roethlisberger following elbow surgery last year. We expect him to be eased into training camp and he should be limited in the preseason.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger throwing passes    Mon May 18, 03:02 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) recently worked out with RB James Conner, WR JuJu Smith-Schuster and WR Ryan Switzer and was throwing passes during the workout.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Steelers here. Roethlisberger was lost for the season in 2019 after just two weeks. He's spent around nine months on the road to recovery so far. We expect Roethlisberger to get eased into action in training camp and the preseason.

Pittsburgh Steelers S Antoine Brooks Jr. said he is focusing on learning the safety position at this point but may be asked to work at different positions.

Steelers | James Conner still the featured back    Fri May 15, 10:02 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner will remain the featured back in 2020, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. 'James is a featured guy and proven runner when healthy,' Tomlin said. 'We're excited about him getting back to health and displaying that in 2020. Benny Snell is a guy that is capable of being a featured runner who plays with a physical style in a similar manner to James. He's capable of being a James-type of guy if James is unavailable.'

Footballguys view: Conner is still the lead back but his role could be smaller this year for a few reasons. He needs to stay healthy and a smaller workload may help him do that. The Steelers have spent draft picks on guys like Benny Snell (2019) and Anthony McFarland (2020) that could cut into Conner's playing time. Conner has a current ADP of RB19 (4.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Alejandro Villanueva perfect as a run blocker    Thu May 14, 11:28 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Alejandro Villanueva was the only offensive lineman in the league to log at least 300 steps on rushing plays in 2019 to avoid getting charged with a blown block, according to Sports Info Solutions.

Steelers | Mason Rudolph to be backup QB    Thu May 14, 07:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph will be the backup to Ben Roethlisberger in 2020, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Rudolph is their backup quarterback but the Steelers don't really have a quarterback of the future. The offense went off the rails last year after Ben Roethlisberger was injured in Week 2. Rudolph doesn't provide much upside as a developmental player, but the Steelers might see him as a guy who could take over when Roethlisberger is done.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger setback free    Thu May 14, 07:01 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) has been progressing well in his recovery after missing the final 14 games of the 2019 season due to an elbow injury, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. 'He's doing great thus far. He's in great physical condition. Rehabilitation, in regards to the injury itself, is going well. I hear nothing but positive reports from that standpoint,' Tomlin said. 'There have been no bumps in the road.'

Footballguys view: Great news for the Steelers here. Nobody knows how much Roethlisberger has left in the tank. This elbow injury should limit the veteran quarterback in training camp and the preseason. The upside is there for Roethlisberger to be a low-end QB1 for Fantasy GMs in 2020...if he can stay healthy.

Steelers | Eric Ebron passes physical    Thu May 14, 06:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Ebron (ankle) tweeted Thursday, May 14 he passed his physical. He added he has been able to run and cut without pain.

Footballguys view: Ebron is a dangerous weapon when healthy. This ankle injury would have kept him out of OTAs and minicamp if those were going on right now, but with a 'virtual offseason' instead we should see him make his Steelers debut in training camp. Ebron should be the lead tight end for the Steelers in 2020.

Steelers | Two WRs may compete for one spot    Mon May 11, 07:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Deon Cain and Ryan Switzer may compete for one roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: They are two different types of receivers that's for sure. Cain is the downfield threat who can fly by defenders and track the ball. Switzer is the small, waterbug receiver who can use quickness on underneath routes. We'll see which type of receiver the Steelers prefer to keep near the end of the bench.

Steelers | Big Ben to be ready    Fri May 8, 10:10 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) is doing well in his rehab and expected to be ready for the season, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. 'As we sit here today, we are extremely confident in his readiness,' Tomlin said. 'We are enjoying the process that he's going through right now. Obviously, it's not without its angst. The guy is coming off a season-ending injury and surgery. But we like where we are. He's throwing on a rehab schedule, and it's going well, and we fully anticipate him being ready to go for that opener.'

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger's fitness was recently panned by Jay Glazer so his physical conditioning will be something to monitor when camp opens. If he can stay healthy this year, the Steelers offense should be much improved from being one of the worst in the league last year.

Steelers | Lighter workload for James Conner?    Sat May 2, 09:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner will likely have his carries 'cut back' in order to keep him healthy and to utilize other backs more frequently, according to Ed Bouchette of The Athletic.

Footballguys view: That seems to be the way things are trending for Conner. The Steelers have other options they can go to, including two fourth-round picks Benny Snell (2019) and Anthony McFarland (2020). Add in versatile, do-everything back in Jaylen Samuels and you can see how Conner might not get as many touches as in years past.

Steelers | Instant impact for Chase Claypool?    Sat May 2, 08:48 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Chase Claypool should 'work his way quickly' into the starting lineup as an outside receiver, according to Ed Bouchette of The Athletic

Footballguys view: The Steelers have a knack for finding WR talent in the draft. Claypool was picked in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft and could be a starter in the near future. He's got a good size/speed combination and does a good job of catching contested passes. We're excited about his upside but we'll see how the pecking order is established behind JuJu Smith-Schuster with guys like Claypool, James Washington and Diontae Johnson.

Steelers | Chase Claypool expected to play outside    Tue Apr 28, 03:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Chase Claypool is expected to primarily line up outside, according to offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, but the 6-foot-4 receiver can also play in the slot.

Footballguys view: Claypool reminds some in the scouting community of a cross between Darren Waller (Raiders) and Devin Funchess (Packers). Last year in 726 snaps, Claypool played a majority of those snaps outside with 614. He's got build-up speed but Claypool can dominate in the red zone. We'll see how he makes the jump to the pros with the Steelers, a team famous for finding WR talent via the draft.

Steelers | Pittsburgh adding Chase Claypool    Fri Apr 24, 08:30 PM

Notre Dame WR Chase Claypool was selected by the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, April 24, with the 49th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Is he a tight end? Is he a wide receiver? It just doesn't matter as Claypool can make plays. Claypool can be a deep threat outside or he can line up as a big possession receiver in the slot. Some in the scouting community compare him to former college teammate Miles Boykin.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster not going to Niners    Wed Apr 22, 05:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster will not be traded to the San Francisco 49s, according to a well-placed source Wednesday, April 22. Smith-Schuster had previously been linked to the Niners in trade rumors.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster is still looking like a 2021 free agent as he will want a top of the market contract and the Steelers are unlikely to give that to him. The Steelers could even take a wide receiver at 49 to anticipate Smith-Schuster's departure next year.

Steelers | Jameis Winston a fit in Pittsburgh    Sat Apr 18, 02:29 PM

Free agent QB Jameis Winston is a backup fit for the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks.

Footballguys view: Winston would be a great fit and could be groomed to take over when Ben Roethlisberger is done playing. He may not want to be a backup now, but Winston is running out of options. Perhaps a coach like Mike Tomlin could convince him to come on board as a valuable reserve and future starting quarterback.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger excited to return    Fri Apr 17, 04:56 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) said he is excited to return to the field and believes missing most of the season last year put a 'little fire' into him.

Footballguys view: We're excited to see Roethlisberger back in action this year. He's a low-end QB1 for Fantasy GMs if healthy. Roethlisberger said he is going to give it everything he has to be better than ever. While he previously rested his arm during the offseason, he is throwing about three times a week as he works through recovery from surgery.

The Pittsburgh Steelers hope TE Eric Ebron will be able to return to his 2018 Pro Bowl form, when he caught 66 passes for 750 yards and 13 touchdowns with the Indianapolis Colts.

Steelers | Benny Snell produced when asked    Sat Apr 11, 09:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Benny Snell topped 90 rushing yards in both of his starts as a rookie and ran for at least 63 rushing yards in four of the five games when he was given at least 16 carries.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick out of Kentucky in the 2019 NFL draft, Snell produced when called upon for the Steelers last year. James Conner is still the lead back but with his injury history, the team could turn to Snell a bit more this season.

Steelers | Good progress for Ben Roethlisberger    Mon Apr 6, 02:59 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) said his recovery is going fine and that he believes he would have been able to participate in some offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: If OTAs and minicamp were to happen, which seems doubtful at this time, we think Roethlisberger would have been limited. It sounds like he's on track for training camp, which is great news for the Steelers. They need to take their backup QB position seriously as Mason Rudolph doesn't appear to be the long-term answer.

Steelers | James Conner much easier to corral in 2019    Sun Apr 5, 05:46 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner broke a tackle once only every 23.2 rush attempts last season. In 2018, he broke a tackle once every 10.8 carries.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Conner can play more like he did in 2018 coming up this season. The Steelers offense as a whole should be better and more wide open with the return of a healthy QB Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | Eric Ebron the missing piece?    Sat Apr 4, 09:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Ebron is one of six tight ends with at least 20 red zone touchdowns over the last five seasons, and he joins a Pittsburgh offense that ranked last in red zone scoring in 2019.

Footballguys view: Ebron is a weapon to be sure but he's inconsistent as the day is long. We'll see if he puts forth a better effort and production level in his first year with the Steelers.

Steelers | Eric Ebron not fully healthy    Fri Apr 3, 08:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Ebron (ankle) said he has not fully recovered from his ankle surgery yet and could not play if the season started today.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster among YAC leaders    Fri Apr 3, 01:45 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster ranked third in the NFL, and second among wide receivers, in 2019 with his average of 5.9 yards per contact per reception.

Footballguys view: That's a given with Smith-Schuster's skill set. He should be a YAC beast once again this season. Hopefully the Steelers passing game has a bounce-back year with a healthy QB Ben Roethlisberger under center.

Steelers | Eric Ebron's deal is official    Tue Mar 31, 07:14 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers TE Eric Ebron's contract was finalized by the NFL Tuesday, March 31.

Footballguys view: Ebron has a chance to be a TE1 for Fantasy GMs now that he's with the Steelers. His career has been up-and-down in terms of production, but we'll cut him a break last year with the Colts. This year, Ebron will have a better quarterback so long as Ben Roethlisberger comes back at full strength. The only way Ebron gets to TE1 level of production is if he beats out Vance McDonald for the top spot.
