Steelers | Antonio Brown torches rookie    Thu May 26, 09:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown beat CB Artie Burns for a pair of touchdowns in the first day of OTAs Thursday, May 26, and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey said he believes a 2,000-yard season is possible for Brown.

Footballguys view: Well, it doesn't really mean anything, especially when it's arguably the best receiver in the game beating a rookie. That said, we were unimpressed with the selection of Burns when it happened and this doesn't fill us with unicorns, rainbows and optimism. Brown is, of course, a WR1. We'll see if everyone is when they line up against Burns.

Steelers | Ladarius Green idle from ankle surgery    Wed May 25, 02:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (ankle) is out of organized team activities as he recovers from offseason ankle surgery. He doesn't have a firm timetable, but he's hopeful to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Green has always had the talent, but he's a player who has never truly played up to his potential. This ankle surgery is not a great start now that he's with a new team. The team should accelerate his learning curve if he's ready for training camp. With Green out, second-year pro Jesse James will get an opportunity to showcase his skill set.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger has high expectations    Wed May 25, 01:16 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said the offense will be looking to average 30 points per game in 2016 even though WR Martavis Bryant has been suspended for the entire season. 'It is still our goal,' Roethlisberger said. 'We were close last year, but we didn't get there.' The Steelers averaged 26.4 points per game in 2015 but the average increased to 28.9 points when Roethlisberger started or played at least a half.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners have high expectations for one of the league's best offenses. With Roethlisberger healthy, the team is capable of making a deep postseason run because they can move the ball against any defense.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey claims full health    Tue May 24, 08:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (leg) participated fully in organized team activities Tuesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: Getting Pouncey back at full strength will be a great asset for the Steelers offensive line. Pouncey said his injured leg is at 100% despite having multiple surgeries last year to repair a fractured fibula in his left leg.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell deflects injury proneness    Tue May 24, 02:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) doesn't believe each of his three injuries in each of his first three seasons in the NFL isn't indicative of him being injury prone. Bell said he's still going to be physical but protect himself at the same time.

Footballguys view: Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and you have a duck. Bell may be correct, but we could write 2,000 words on how there may or may not be anything such as injury prone when it comes to pro athletes. One thing is certain; Bell needs to stay healthy and produce at a high level for the Steelers this year. If healthy, there's no question that he can do just that.

  Steelers | Le'Veon Bell full-go by camp?    Tue May 24, 02:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) said he will be 100% healthy by training camp. He has already participated in individual drills during organized team activities, including running and cutting, as he continues to recover from a torn medial collateral ligament.

Footballguys view: This the most positive report we've seen about Bell this offseason. The team has been wisely cautious with their star RB, but he's trying to recover from major knee surgery he had last November. We'll see if he's ready by the start of training camp. If not, the team could continue to limit him through camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell says he'll be ready    Tue May 24, 01:19 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee), who is recovering from surgery for a torn medial collateral ligament in his knee, said he plans on making a full return in time for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Bell has confidence that he'll be ready, but we're not so sure. He had major knee surgery back in November of last year, and his status for the start of training camp is up in the air. Bell himself may be ready, but the team may want to ease him into action later this year.

Steelers | Eli Rogers could make roster    Mon May 23, 09:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers is not guaranteed a spot on the final roster, but he could receive some work as a slot receiver. The team was high on Rogers before the 2015 season but suffered an injury during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Super deep dynasty players should take note here. Rogers is small (5'10" 180 pounds) but was a playmaker in college at Louisville and could be a decent slot WR in the pros. He is currently behind Markus Wheaton, Sammie Coates and Darrius Heyward-Bey on the depth chart.

Steelers | Pittsburgh may use two TEs in red zone    Mon May 23, 09:24 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TEs Ladarius Green and Jesse James may both be on the field at the same time in the red zone because of their height.

Footballguys view: That would make a lot of sense..especially since WR Martavis Bryant is suspended for the year. Green has a fine skill set, but he's never really played up to his full potential. The Steelers would like him to do that this year, but they also have the huge prospect (second-year TE Jesse James) to develop as well. James is raw at the position, but he's tall, has a large wingspan and can play 'above the rim' in the NFL.

Steelers | Sean Davis signs rookie deal    Fri May 20, 10:40 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers SS Sean Davis signed his four-year rookie deal Friday, May 20. Terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Davis is a multi-role defensive back who is being put at strong safety, but can also cover tight ends in man and play in space. The Steelers are trying to groom a few players with an intersection of abilities that they did not have on the roster before this draft.

Steelers | Mike Mitchell should be cleared    Thu May 19, 07:58 PM

Steelers | Antonio Brown's dancing can help    Wed May 18, 07:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown believes his experience on Dancing With the Stars can give him an advantage on the football field. '[Dance training] can definitely help me with football, change of direction, fluidity, constantly being ready for the next move,' Brown said. 'Dancing is all about the next move, being prepared for the next move in the midst of any move. It will definitely help with ankle strength, pushing off, change of direction.'

Footballguys view: There's actually a long tradition of football players using other non-traditional forms of training to improve their games, including ballet (Steelers HOFer Lynn Swann). So Brown's right, it could help with his game. Of course, his game is already pretty high level, and he'll be one of the top fantasy WR1 next year.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell unknown for OTAs    Wed May 11, 08:54 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's (knee) status for organized team activities in a few weeks is unknown, but he's expected to be limited if he's cleared. Training camp might be the best gauge used to determine his status as he's six months removed from right knee surgery.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are going to be wisely cautious with their star running back. As of now, there's no timetable for a full return. Bell might be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but we'll have to wait and see how his recovery goes the rest of the offseason.

Steelers | James Conner completes chemo    Tue May 10, 01:29 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (lymphoma) has completed his chemotherapy regimen as he recovers from Hodgkin lymphoma. Conner was diagnosed in December with the Stage 2 case of the disease.

Footballguys view: Eff cancer. We're hopeful that Conner can make a speedy recovery after chemo.

Steelers | Travis Feeney a freakish athlete    Tue May 10, 10:51 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Travis Feeney (shoulder) starred at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he thinks that two shoulder surgeries in college scared teams off until the Steelers grabbed him in the sixth round. He ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash and posted a 40-inch vertical leap. Feeney did this at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds. For context, those are better numbers than top-10 pick Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd. Feeney's original surgery on his left shoulder didn't fully correct the injury, but he said his shoulder feels stable and he's focused on strengthening the muscles around it this offseason. Feeney will need to add weight to play outside linebacker in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Feeney plays with little regard for his personal safety. That's awesome if your body can handle the punishment. Feeney has transformed his body from safety to linebacker, but he's got to stay healthy. The old saying goes, "your best ability is availability" and Feeney has the skill set of a 4-3 weak-side linebacker who could earn a spot on special teams as a rookie.

Steelers | Sean Davis could start immediately    Tue May 10, 01:18 AM

Pittsburgh SS Sean Davis projects as a strong safety, and the competition is wide open. He might start if he proves he is ready during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Davis loves to play close to the line of scrimmage and he arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He's bad in coverage and may have to come off the field in obvious passing situations.

Steelers | Three signed    Mon May 9, 01:19 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed WR Markus Tucker and RBs Brandon Brown-Dukes and Cameron Stingily to undisclosed deals Monday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Stingily is the player that we're curious about. He was just transitioned from linebacker to running back two years ago, and he runs with a punishing style. In only two years of playing the position, Stingily proved that he could dominate with a heavy workload. The Steelers may find a spot for him on their practice squad.

Steelers | Demarcus Ayers, Tyler Matakevich sign    Thu May 5, 05:04 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers seventh-round draft choices WR DeMarcus Ayers and LB Tyler Matakevich signed four-year contracts Thursday, May 5. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ayers is a smaller/quicker receiver who could contribute as a return man if he makes the team.

Steelers | Three Steelers released    Thu May 5, 10:05 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Abou Toure, PK Ty Long and OT Mike X. Adams were released Thursday, May 5. Adams was released with the designation of a failed physical.

Footballguys view: Adams is the player to highlight here. He missed all of last season with a back injury, and that same injury may be the reason why he was released with a 'failed physical' designation. If healthy, Adams could at least be a swing tackle for some team out there.

Steelers | Decline option on Jarvis Jones    Mon May 2, 11:29 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers declined the 2017 fifth-year option on LB Jarvis Jones Monday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Potential is a dirty, filthy word as three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth (ESPN) always says. Jones had incredible potential as the 17th-overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, but with only five career sacks he's been a huge disappointment. It's no surprise the team wouldn't add the option.

Steelers | Pittsburgh re-signing Bruce Gradkowski    Sun May 1, 07:19 PM

Free-agent QB Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers) will re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, May 2, and compete with QB Landry Jones for the backup job.

Footballguys view: That's a good move for the Steelers. Jones hasn't shown the development needed to get excited about his future in the pros, and Gradkowski is a solid reserve QB who won't cause you to lose sleep if he's a spot starter.

Steelers | Invite Jacob Huesman for tryout    Sun May 1, 02:27 PM

Free-agent QB Jacob Huesman (Tennessee-Chattanooga) has been invited to try out for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Heusman was a three-time Souther Conference Offensive Player of the Year. At 6'2" 220 pounds, Huesman is a fast runner who can gash defenses with his legs while trying to make a play with his arm. The Steelers have him as a camp arm only with Bruce Gradkowski returning and Landry Jones as the third-string guy behind Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | Artie Burns becomes a Steeler    Thu Apr 28, 10:56 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Miami CB Artie Burns with the 25th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The team wanted William Jackson III, but the Bengals stole him, so they made do with Burns. A raw prospect with tremendous speed, teams were very split on him. It may take time but he has the upside to be one of the best corners in the draft.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell appears to be on track    Mon Apr 25, 07:25 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) posted a video on Twitter showing himself dunking a basketball.

Footballguys view: That's good news for the Steelers. If healthy, Bell will be a top fantasy back once again this year. The Steelers may mix in a bit more of DeAngelo Williams to help keep Bell fresh. Monitor the discussion about a possible RBBC in Pittsburgh during training camp. The split should heavily favor Bell.

Steelers | Pittsburgh not pursuing Josh Norman    Fri Apr 22, 07:56 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not pursuing free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) at this point and have no plans to go after him, according to team sources.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell part of initial drug testing    Wed Apr 20, 12:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell tweeted that he was part of the initial round of random drug tests Wednesday, April 20.

Footballguys view: As he's likely still in the drug program, that's no shock but doing it on 4/20 is amusing at least. If he stays on the straight and narrow, he should be a lock as an RB1 in fantasy for the 2016 season.

Steelers | Devontae Booker visits Pittsburgh     Tue Apr 19, 02:30 PM

Utah RB Devontae Booker is visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, April 19.

Footballguys view: Booker has a good all-purpose skill set, and he could be a second-round pick in the NFL draft. He's not overly fast or powerful, but he is a jack of all trades. The Steelers are looking for RB depth behind Le'Veon Bell and DeAngelo Williams.

Steelers | Bruce Gradkowski could return    Mon Apr 18, 04:16 PM

Free-agent QB Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers) is still an option for the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the team wants to see him throw before they sign him.

Footballguys view: The Steelers reportedly might be interested in free agent Brian Hoyer, but resigning Gradkowski might be the better option. Gradkowski missed the entire 2015 season because of a shoulder injury.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey attends training    Mon Apr 18, 03:46 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (leg) was present for the first day of offseason training Monday, April 18, and said he's doing great after missing last season with a broken fibula.

Footballguys view: The Steelers offensive line isn't as bad as it used to be. Add in a healthy Pouncey, and this has the makings of a solid group in 2016.

Free-agent QB Brian Hoyer (Texans) is expected to receive interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams cleared    Wed Apr 6, 12:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams (foot) has been fully cleared for workouts.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Steelers here. Williams will serve as the primary backup behind Le'Veon Bell this year, but with as successful as he was last year the team could mix him in for a full series or two per game.

Steelers | James Harrison expected to play in 2016    Tue Apr 5, 10:25 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB James Harrison is expected to return for the 2016 season. He has been in Arizona doing through a rather strenuous routine to stay in shape for the new season, and beat writer Ed Bouchette said that while Harrison hasn't given a definitive answer, Harrison isn't likely working so hard just to retire.

Steelers | Donte Whitner could be on radar    Tue Apr 5, 10:24 PM

Free-agent SS Donte Whitner (Browns) could be a player the Pittsburgh Steelers discuss, but at 30 years old the team might also feel they want to get younger at the position and Whitner does not offer much of an upgrade.

Footballguys view: Whitner's one of the top safeties available on the open market. He can still play at a fairly high level, and Whitner would bring an intimidation factor to the Steelers secondary.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger shedding weight    Tue Apr 5, 12:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has lost at least 15 pounds this offseason with a cardio regimen in an attempt to avoid joint pain and injuries.

Footballguys view: A smaller "Big Ben" might actually be a good thing. So long as he can stay healthy, the Steelers will be playoff contenders in 2016. With their pass-happy offense (even with the loss of WR Martavis Bryant), we see Roethlisberger as a top-10 fantasy QB for this upcoming season.

Steelers | Hosted Mike Martin    Tue Mar 29, 03:16 PM

Free-agent DT Mike Martin (Titans) recently visited the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Steelers | Jack Crawford to visit    Tue Mar 29, 12:35 PM

Free-agent DE Jack Crawford (Cowboys) will visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers this week.

Steelers | Ladarius Green to stretch the field    Thu Mar 24, 12:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green will give the team a vertical threat at the position that retired TE Heath Miller didn't give them. 'He'll bring us a dimension at tight end that we really haven't had,' general manager Kevin Colbert said. 'Heath was a great receiver, a great blocker. He wasn't really a stretch the field guy. Ladarius gives you that added dimension of speed, he'll have to work on his blocking to get caught up to where we need him to be. But the speed and vertical threat at tight end is really something we haven't had.'

Footballguys view: We know Green has talent, the problem is he can't stay on the field to show it. So while he could put up some nice TE2 numbers, we don't trust him and his constant flow of issues. If you draft him, make sure you have alternatives.

Steelers | Pitt's No. 2 WR job up for grabs    Tue Mar 22, 02:45 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers' No. 2 wide receiver job is up for grabs between WRs Markus Wheaton, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Sammie Coates this year, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Wheaton seems like the favorite for the spot, but Tomlin also sees Coates as a potential breakout candidate in 2016. While we agree with Tomlin, we'd like to point out what a raw receiver Coates still is to this day. He's athletic and explosive, but Coates struggles with concentration and he doesn't run clean routes.

Steelers | Pittsburgh confident in Sammie Coates    Sun Mar 20, 03:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates will be one of the next men up in light of WR Martavis Bryant's year-long suspension for violating the NFL' substance abuse policy. There is no urgency to sign or draft another wide receiver, according to general manager Kevin Colbert, who said they feel good about Coates.

Footballguys view: Coates has the speed to get downfield in a hurry, and he's dangerous after the catch. It's catching the ball that can be problematic for the young receiver. Coates is a raw prospect, but he's going to get a shot to prove himself in 2016 with Bryant's suspension.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant will not be released despite his one-year ban for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, according to general manager Kevin Colbert.

Footballguys view: Why in the world would they cut him? Bryant needs help to deal with his depression, and getting his life back on track should be first and foremost. The Steelers will back him and look forward to a healthy return to the field in 2017.
