Steelers | PIT has two candidates for No. 2 WR job    Wed Jun 24, 01:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant are expected to compete for the No. 2 wide receiver job during training camp. Both players performed well during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: This competition could go either way. Bryant is a big deep target with a large wingspan and leaping ability to win at the point of the catch. Wheaton is a fantastic route-runner who can get open on underneath routes. No matter who wins, we expect Bryant to be the more fantasy relevant player.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant may be red zone target    Wed Jun 24, 01:29 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant could be targeted in the red zone more often this season since he is 6-foot-4. Bryant had four receptions in the red zone last season and all of the catches were for touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Bryant "may be red-zone target" this year? Ha! He's CERTAINLY going to be targeted in the red zone as much as possible. His yards per catch (21.1) ranked 1st in the NFL along with his longest catch (94 yards) also ranking at the top in the league. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL. He's a deep target with the ability to play above the rim near pay dirt. Fantasy owners are taking him off the board at WR25 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Sammie Coates wants to be all-around WR    Tue Jun 23, 07:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates said he wants to show he can be a multi-dimensional wide receiver and not just a deep threat. 'I'm just trying to do everything I can to showcase I'm an all-around guy who can play anywhere,' Coates said.

Footballguys view: Big, fast and raw are the best ways to describe Coates. The rookie from Auburn has tremendous natural talent, athleticism and body control. He also has a history of dropping too many passes. In college, Coates had a drop rate of 19.1 percent--a terrible stat which shows his lack of focus. He's inconsistent in his play speed and needs a lot of work before he's an effective pro. Coates has ability (and lots of it)....he just needs to refine and sharpen his game.

Steelers | Markus Wheaton learning slot role    Fri Jun 19, 02:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton said the slot position is not out of his comfort zone, but there are things he needs to learn that are different from playing on the outside.

Footballguys view: Wheaton said he's seeing a lot of the same defensive reads in the slot that he did on the outside. Getting him in the slot gives Wheaton a clean release off the line of scrimmage. He'll get into his routes quicker, and we know that he's been a sharp route-runner since his days in college at Oregon State.

Steelers | No date for Le'Veon Bell's appeal    Wed Jun 17, 01:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he has not had the appeal of his three-game suspension heard at this point and does not know when the appeal will be scheduled.

Footballguys view: There's no set timetable right now, but Bell's lawyers could be dragging this out so the young running back has more time to prove that he's staying out of trouble. There's a chance his suspension gets reduced from three games to two games instead. Stay tuned...and oh yeah, draft Bell as you normally would. He should be coming off the board within the first three picks of every draft out there.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger embracing leadership    Tue Jun 16, 08:56 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is embracing a leadership role this offseason. 'It's fun because I can tell the guys what I want on the field and they are going to listen because we all want to be the best we can be and help each other win,' Roethlisberger said. 'I am just happy to have the coach's blessing to be able to do that and not stepping on anybody's toes.' At 33 years old, Roethlisberger is the second-oldest player on the Steelers' roster, behind only LB James Harrison.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is still near the top of his game, and the Steelers have incredible weapons on offense around him. He may not pass for over 4,900 yards like he did last year, but going over 4,500 sounds reasonable. We could also see Roethlisberger tossing 30-plus touchdowns in 2015. DFS players should look to Roethlisberger over the first three weeks of the season while RB Le'Veon Bell is suspended.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant gaining confidence    Sun Jun 14, 07:57 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has focused on improving his game and mastering the flanker position this offseason, which has shown in his on-field confidence, according to Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley. QB Ben Roethlisberger has gained trust in Bryant, per Steelers WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. Bryant turned heads during organized team activities during the week and can play both inside and outside.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners take note here. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL, and that number highlights precisely how he can attack defenses. He's a deep threat who can get vertical in a hurry. Bryant can score touchdowns with ease, making 8-10 touchdowns well within his range this year.

Steelers | Big Ben loves supporting cast    Thu Jun 11, 12:14 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is excited about the team's offense heading into the 2015 season, which he feels might be the best supporting cast of his career. "I hate to yes or no, because I don't want to offend anybody else that's been here," Roethlisberger said Wednesday, June 10. "But you look at stats from the NFL, we had the No. 1 wide receiver and the No. 1 overall back. Kind of hard to argue with those numbers."

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should be excited by this offense too--especially when Le'Veon Bell comes back from his three-game suspension. Roethlisberger is a QB1 with the upside to finish as a top-5 fantasy quarterback. Bell is a RB1 you should consider at the top of your draft--even with the suspension. Antonio Brown is a WR1 and a virtual lock to finish the season as a top-5 fantasy season.

Steelers | Dri Archer likely to return kicks    Sun Jun 7, 11:01 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer is in line to return kicks in 2015 after being stripped of the duty at the end of last season.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Archer can make a larger difference this year. We're not expecting him to do much as a runner or receiver for the Steelers. However, he could be a decent return man if he uses his speed and quickness properly in 2015.

Steelers | Steve McLendon had offseason surgery    Sun Jun 7, 10:21 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Steve McLendon said he underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason but has completely recovered from the surgery. McLendon said he regained strength in his shoulder and has full range of motion.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Steelers here. McLendon was basically playing with one arm when the Steelers lost to the Ravens in the playoffs last year. This shoulder injury forced McLendon to miss four games in October and November, but he returned to play in the last four games of the regular season and for 26 snaps in the playoff game. McLendon is entering the final year of his contract, and he's looking to impress so he can land a third deal with the Steelers.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant adds weight    Sun Jun 7, 09:41 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has been working out three times per day this offseason and currently weighs 225 pounds, which is 10 pounds more than he weighed during his rookie season. 'Everyone gets bigger and better every year,' Bryant said. 'I wanted to make sure I got better. I didn't want to slack off or become complacent. I had some things I wanted to get done in the offseason, so I went to work.'

Footballguys view: Bryant became a fantasy darling last year because of his ability to make plays in the end zone. His penchant for hauling in long touchdowns make him a great player to consider each week in DFS. Bryant's 21.1 yards per reception ranked first in the NFL last year.

Steelers | Antonio Brown adds muscle    Thu Jun 4, 05:18 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has added five pounds of muscle this offseason because he wants to increase his durability. Brown said training, rest and nutrition have helped to contribute to his success.

Footballguys view: Brown is arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL. He's dangerous and exciting to watch every time he touches the ball. Last year, Brown ran a league-high 631 routes, was targeted 180 times (2nd-most), caught 129 passes (1st) for 1,698 receiving yards (1st), 85 first downs (1st) and 13 receiving touchdowns (2nd). Brown has amazing chemistry with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and he can attack a defense on short or long routes.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger sits out    Thu Jun 4, 01:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger did not participate in organized team activities Thursday, June 4, because he received a day off.

Footballguys view: Nothing particularly worrisome about a veteran getting a day of rest. Roethlisberger has an ADP of 6.11, and ranks as a solid QB1 in most leagues.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell close to full strength    Tue May 26, 09:47 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) said his knee is close to 100% healed from the injury he suffered during the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Bell is going to be serving a three-game suspension to start the season. He'll certainly be 100 percent healthy by that time. Fantasy owners are not worried about the knee or the suspension as Bell is still going off the board at RB3 (1.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Antonio Brown not focused on contract    Tue May 26, 05:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown did not answer questions on the first day of organized team activities regarding a possible new deal.

Footballguys view: At this time, Brown doesn't sound like a guy who is going to hold out for a new contract. He's seriously underpaid at his current salary of $9.7 million for 2015. Yes, that number puts him in the top 10 for wide receivers but Brown should easily be making top-5 money. It doesn't look like a holdout is coming for Brown even though he deserves a pay raise.

Steelers | L'Damian Washington waived    Tue May 19, 05:15 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR L'Damian Washington (undisclosed) was waived/injured Tuesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Washington was just receiver depth for the Steelers, and they had to make room for the addition of rookie CFA Devin Gardner.

Steelers | Claim Devin Gardner    Tue May 19, 04:39 PM

Free-agent WR Devin Gardner (Patriots) was claimed by the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: We're always intrigued by depth receivers on the Steelers roster as they have good eye for talent at the position. Gardner is a big target (6'4" 215 pounds) but he's incredibly raw as a receiver. The converted quarterback knows how to find the soft spots in a zone, but he needs to develop better "my ball" mentality when passes are contested. He's also just a bad route-runner at this time, but that may improve with more reps at the position.

Steelers | Sammie Coates signs deal    Fri May 15, 03:59 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates signed a four-year deal with the team Friday, May 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Coates will start out as a role player, but he could team up with Martavis Bryant to give the Steelers twin rockets outside, stretching defenses to their limit. He's got the speed and thick, long build, but Coates needs to be more consistent catching the ball and improve his craft to tap into his vast potential. He'll be a boom/bust pro.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell fine with ban    Thu May 14, 07:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said Thursday, May 14, that he didn't have a problem with his three-game suspension for being charged with possession of marijuana and driving under the influence. 'I made a mistake,' Bell said. 'I'm going to just have to do my time, whatever the final decision may be. Get past it, and get ready for next season and continuing to be the great football player I know I can be.'

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see how the Steelers deal with his absence and whether Deangelo Williams can be productive, as he just hadn't been for the Carolina Panthers in some time. Bell remains a high ADP choice, close to the top of the first round, while Williams is only at an ADP of 11.09, even with those first three games.

Steelers | Bud Dupree's terms    Thu May 14, 06:10 PM

Updating a previous story, Pittsburgh Steelers LB Bud Dupree's rookie contract is for four years and $9.22 million, with a $4.96 million signing bonus. The Steelers have a team option for the fifth year.

Footballguys view: Dupree fills the role of pass rusher on a team which needs them. It's added bonus that Dupree adds youth to what they have on the roster already.

Steelers | Sign Bud Dupree    Thu May 14, 05:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Bud Dupree signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 14. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: The Steelers were looking for some linebacker help and they got it in a big way with the talented Dupree. This defense is in transition a little due to age, but adding Dupree and a few other key players in the draft was a good start.

Steelers | Jesse James signed    Thu May 14, 12:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James signed a four-year contract with the team Thursday, May 14. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: James, a fifth-round pick by the Steelers this year, has great size at 6'7" 260 pounds. His length makes him a great target near pay dirt as he can high-point passes away from defenders. James is not a seam-ripper, but he does have decent straight-line speed. He's an in-line tight end the team will groom and develop.

Steelers | PIT grabs Sammie Coates    Fri May 1, 11:03 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Auburn WR Sammie Coates in Round 3 (No. 87 overall) in the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1.

Footballguys view: A nice pick for the Steelers. Inconsistent overall, but he has tremendous athleticism. It will take time but the Steelers are deep at wide receiver so they can bring him along slowly. A nice deep dynasty pick.

Steelers | Bud Dupree selected 22nd overall    Thu Apr 30, 10:31 PM

Kentucky LB Bud Dupree was selected 22nd overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: What a great pick by the Steelers. They get another great pass-rusher here with Dupree. Some felt Dupree could have been a top-10 pick, but he fell to the Steelers at 22. Dupree has a good closing burst to the quarterback, and he can chase from sideline-to-sideline.

Steelers | Robert Golden signs tender    Wed Apr 29, 05:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free-agent CB Robert Golden signed his tender Wednesday, April 29.

Steelers | Antonio Brown present    Mon Apr 27, 10:45 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown was spotted at the team's facility Monday, April 27.

Footballguys view: Brown said he was not participating in voluntary workouts earlier because he was spending time with his newborn child. Now, he's back and ready to rock.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell close to full health    Thu Apr 23, 06:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) said his knee is close to being 100% after injuring it five months ago.

Footballguys view: In the regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals, Bell hyper-extended his right knee. Bell did not play in the Wild Card Round against the Ravens, and he skipped playing in the Pro Bowl too. He's currently suspended for three games to start the 2015 season, but he's appealing the suspension with the hopes of reducing it to one game. The Steelers will take it easy on him as he comes back.

Steelers | Landon Collins visits    Thu Apr 23, 02:13 PM

Alabama SS Landon Collins met with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, April 22.

Footballguys view: Collins is an in-the-box safety who can intimidate opponents and shut down the run game. He has the speed to play sideline-to-sideline, and he arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. Collins should be a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The Steelers are looking for safety help with legendary Troy Polamalu retiring.

Steelers | Antonio Brown explains absence    Wed Apr 22, 02:03 PM

Steelers | Three draft prospects visit    Wed Apr 22, 02:51 AM

North Dakota DE Kyle Emanuel, Utah CB Eric Rowe and Ohio State CB Doran Grant all visited the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Rowe is one of the more talented defensive backs in this class and the Steelers are sorely in need of help there. He's a big, physical corner who might not be the best suited to mirror quicker or faster receivers in man coverage.

Steelers | Will Johnson signs tender    Mon Apr 20, 05:45 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers FB Will Johnson signed his exclusive rights free-agent tender Monday, April 20.

Footballguys view: Johnson was on the field for around 200 snaps last year, but he doesn't produce much as a runner or receiver. He's mainly a blocker and special-teams player.

Steelers | Antonio Brown not at workouts    Mon Apr 20, 01:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is not present for the start of offseason workouts Monday, April 20, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Yep, he's seriously underpaid and is holding out for a new deal. The Steelers have to get him on the field, so we expect something to be done before the start of the season.

Steelers | Antonio Brown could hold out    Mon Apr 20, 11:02 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is seeking a new contract and could hold out from minicamps and training camp, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This is not what you want to hear if you're a Steelers fan. Brown has an average annual salary just a little over $8 million, 13th-most in the NFL. Over the last few seasons, Brown has played like a top-5 wide receiver--and you can easily make the argument that he's the best wide receiver in the game today. The Steelers have to have him, and we feel confident a deal will be worked out....eventually.

Steelers | T.J. Clemmings visits    Sat Apr 18, 09:17 AM

Pittsburgh OT T.J. Clemmings has visited with the Pittsburgh Steelers this offseason.

Footballguys view: Clemmings played his college ball at PITT, and he's one of the most intriguing tackle prospects in this draft. A former defensive lineman, Clemmings switched to the offensive side of the ball two years ago. He's incredibly athletic, but still technically raw at the position. He has the upside to be the best tackle from this draft class, but it's going to take some work.

Kansas City Chiefs LS Brandon Hartson was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, April 17.

Steelers | Jaelen Strong visiting PIT    Fri Apr 17, 03:00 PM

Arizona State WR Jaelen Strong is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, April 17.

Footballguys view: Strong reminds us of Alshon Jeffery (Bears) or Anquan Boldin (49ers) because of his size and physical style of play. He can rip away contested catches from defenders, and this makes him a fine target when his team is near pay dirt. Look for Strong to be a late first- or early second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Steelers | Randy Gregory meets with Pittsburgh    Fri Apr 17, 12:43 AM

Nebraska LB Randy Gregory had a pre-draft visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Gregory is one of the best edge-rushers in this draft class. He failed a drug test at the combine earlier this year, and that was his third-known hot test for marijuana (two at Nebraska). Gregory says he used to have a problem with weed, but now he's able to kick the habit. Um, okay...but he still failed a test and could be in the "program" in the NFL from day one. He'll be a first-round pick, but there is risk associated with selecting him.

Steelers | Three draft prospects visit    Wed Apr 15, 07:41 AM

Washington State DT Xavier Cooper, Ohio State TE Jeff Heuerman, and UAB TE Kennard Backman came to the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, April 14, for a pre-draft visit.

Footballguys view: Cooper is the guy we'd like to highlight here. He's an agile defensive tackle who can knife through the offensive line to create pressure on the quarterback. Cooper has good athleticism and lateral movement, but he needs to play with more power if he's going to be more than a part-time player at the pro level. He's likely a third-round pick.

Steelers | Sign Jordan Berry    Tue Apr 14, 05:16 PM

Undrafted free-agent P Jordan Berry (Eastern Kentucky) was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, April 14.

Steelers | Three prospects visit    Tue Apr 14, 02:57 AM

Texas A&M TE Cameron Clear, West Virginia G Quinton Spain, and Auburn WR Sammie Coates all visited the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Coates is the player we like best here. He's a fast and physical player with dynamic playmaking ability after the catch. However, catching the ball has been a problem for Coates. He had a drop rate of 19.1 percent in college, and he was rarely on the same page as his quarterback. That obviously will have to be improved if Coates wants a long career in the NFL.

Steelers | Tyler Murphy visits    Sat Apr 11, 07:07 AM

Boston College QB Tyler Murphy visited the Pittsburgh Steelers on Friday, April 10.

Footballguys view: Murphy was with the Florida Gators, but he transferred to Boston College as a fifth-year senior. He's a dual-threat quarterback who had around 1,500 yards passing and 1,000 yards rushing in 2014. Murphy broke Boston College's career rushing record (for a quarterback) set previously by Doug Flutie.

Steelers | Breshad Perriman meets with PIT    Fri Apr 10, 02:09 PM

Central Florida WR Breshad Perriman is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, April 10.

Footballguys view: The Steelers seem to be set at wide receiver among their top three, but Perriman could be a pick in a "best player available" scenario. It wouldn't be the Steelers style, as they have struck gold in the third round or later at wide receiver repeatedly over the last six years.

Steelers | Draft targets clear for Pittsburgh    Thu Apr 9, 10:30 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters is one of three cornerbacks to have a pre-draft visit with the Pittsburgh Steelers, and six of the team's seven pre-draft visitors have been either cornerbacks or outside linebackers.

Footballguys view: Peters has some character questions after an incident with a coach led to his dismissal in-season, but he is a big, tough corner who has the mentality to hang with NFL talent at wide receiver. He could end up in the first round.

Steelers | David DeCastro's option picked up    Thu Apr 9, 12:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OG David DeCastro's fifth-year option was picked up by the team Thursday, April 9.

Steelers | Marcus Peters visiting    Thu Apr 9, 12:25 PM

Washington CB Marcus Peters is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, April 9.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell suspended three games    Thu Apr 9, 09:42 AM

Updating an ongoing story, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell was suspended three games and fined an additional game check after violating the league's substance abuse policy, according to league sources. He has appealed.

Footballguys view: We heard a pair of games the other day, but it seems we're in the three game territory now, hurting Bell's draft stock a bit. Unless he appeals (and wins) this ruling could knock him out of the first round in some redraft leagues. However, if he's there in the second (or the late first in a snake-style draft), consider yourself blessed because Bell is otherwise the top pick in a fantasy league. If you can build a team around him top survive those first three weeks you could have a great value in him.

Steelers | Nate Orchard visiting Wednesday    Wed Apr 8, 01:29 PM

Utah DE Nate Orchard is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Orchard lacks multiple moves as a pass-rusher, but he gets off the line of scrimmage in a hurry and he has a quick closing burst to the quarterback. He has a nose for the football, and Orchard does a good job of quickly bringing his man to the ground. Orchard is not a run-stuffer, and he'll struggle to set the edge. However, he's got upside as a pass-rusher in the pros. Orchard should be a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Steelers | Meeting with Eli Harold    Wed Apr 8, 01:21 PM

Virginia LB Eli Harold is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Harold is one of the best athletes in this draft class. At Virginia, he played both standing up and with his hand in the dirt as a pass-rusher. He's got elite speed off the edge, but Harold will have to prove himself in coverage at the pro level. He should be a late first- or early second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Steelers | Scheduled to meet with Sammie Coates    Wed Apr 8, 12:16 PM

Auburn WR Sammie Coates is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers next week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Coates is amazingly gifted athletically, but he does have a problem with dropping passes and concentration on longer targets. His drop rate in college at Auburn was a whopping 19.1 percent. He'll be a project in the NFL, but one teams may feel is worth selecting in the second round of the draft. The Steelers are stacked at the wide receiver position, but they could take the time to develop Coates the right way.
