Steelers | Le'Veon Bell to sit out    Mon Jul 28, 02:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (hamstring) will not practice Monday, July 28, due to a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: It's a smart move for the Steelers here. Bell is set to be their lead back in 2014, and he could see around 300 carries and 45 catches. Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not given enough time to properly heal. Just let Bell rest and give more opportunities for guys like LeGarrette Blount behind him.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant does not practice    Sun Jul 27, 11:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant (groin) did not participate in practice Sunday, July 27, because of a groin injury.

Footballguys view: Bryant is trying to crack a wide receiver group that the coaches are excited about in Pittsburgh. 2013 sixth round pick Justin Brown has had a great offseason, which could keep Bryant relegated to the #5 wide receiver spot for this year, and a groin injury for Bryant will cinch that if he can't get back on the field soon.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell exits    Sun Jul 27, 05:26 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (hamstring) didn't finish practice Sunday, July 27, due to a tight hamstring.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger concentrated on strengthening his throwing arm in the offseason and said it is the strongest it has been in his career. He also worked with a personal trainer and nutritionist for the first time to keep his weight down and endurance up.

Footballguys view: We may see a rejuvenated Big Ben in 2014. The Steelers are reportedly going to use more of the no-huddle offense this year. That could boost his fantasy stock, so make sure not to overlook Roethlisberger in your draft.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey will not be limited    Fri Jul 25, 07:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (knee) will not be limited during training camp even though he is coming back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Steelers offensive line, though we hope they are cautious with him as even these days returning from an ACL can be tricky. Still as one of the most critical people on the line, it's good for the offense to see Pouncey return to health.

Steelers | Mike Tomlin does not assume job security    Sun Jul 20, 10:50 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin does not assume he has job security. "I don't assume that," Tomlin said.

Footballguys view: There have only been three head coaches for the Steelers in the last 40-plus years. It's the most secure job in the NFL. That being said, we love Tomlin's mindset here. The Steelers are looking to get back on top of the AFC North this year.

Steelers | Coach praises team    Thu Jul 17, 07:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau recently said the team had the best organized team activities he's ever been a part of and is excited about where the team currently stands.

Footballguys view: The AFC North seems more wide open this year. The Steelers should be resurgent so long as Todd Haley doesn't slow them down offensively. They've not drafted well on defense in recent years, so perhaps some of the young impact players they've added in the last two years (Jarvis Jones, Ryan Shazier) can make plays in 2014.

Steelers | Arthur Moats provides versatility    Thu Jul 17, 07:18 PM

Steelers | Cam Thomas could start    Wed Jul 16, 01:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers DE Cam Thomas could start at defensive end until DE Stephon Tuitt is ready to take over the starting job. Thomas appears to be better suited to be a swing player at defensive end and defensive tackle.

Footballguys view: Thomas is a seasoned veteran the Steelers added in free agency from the Chargers earlier this year. Tuitt was a nice value pick by the Steelers in the second round of the 2014 NFL draft. He is an athletic big man, measuring in at 6'5" 310 pounds. Tuitt is fast but needs to work on his quickness. He can take up space as a run-stuffer, and Tuitt is developing his ability to get interior push on the quarterback.

Steelers | Showing interest in Jermichael Finley    Tue Jul 15, 01:06 PM

Free-agent TE Jermichael Finley (Packers) is receiving interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers. It should be noted that the Steelers' neurosurgeon, Dr. Joseph Maroon, performed Finley's surgery in November and cleared him in May. 'Pittsburgh have showed me a couple deals, but we all know the money ain't what it's supposed to be,' said Finley, who has 223 career catches for 2,785 yards and 20 touchdowns. 'If I quit the game right now, I can take tax-free money, and that's a difficult thing that I'm going through with myself ...'

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use a weapon like Finley if he's healthy. Heath Miller isn't getting any younger, and the Steelers lack a quality move tight end behind him. Finley could come in and compete for playing time in two-tight end sets. He'll get plenty of interest on the open market when teams feel comfortable that he's healthy.

Steelers | Antonio Brown back with Rosenhaus Sports    Mon Jul 14, 08:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has left Roc Nation Sports and plans to rehire Rosenhaus Sports for representation, sources told Fox Sports. Per NFL rules, Brown must wait five business days before officially hiring Rosenhaus Sports.

Footballguys view: Brown is not set to hit free agency until 2018. Hiring a new agent may be an indication that he wants to negotiate a new contract. He's set to make an average of about $8 million annually over the next three years. That currently ranks 12th-highest of all wide receivers in the league in terms of average salary.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey not on police report    Mon Jul 14, 03:02 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey was not listed on an initial police report arising from an alleged altercation Saturday, July 12 at a South Beach nightclub in Miami. The investigation is ongoing.

Footballguys view: Good news for Pouncey and the Steelers here. He's healthy after missing most of the season in 2013 with an ACL and MCL injury. Having Pouncey on the field is a huge asset for the offense. He'll help improve the pass-protection for Ben Roethlisberger, but Pouncey also will blast open larger holes for the ground game.

Steelers | Derek Moye will have to compete for spot    Fri Jul 11, 11:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Derek Moye has improved this offseason but will still need to compete for a roster spot during training camp, according to wide receivers coach Richard Mann.

Footballguys view: Moye is a slender receiver with good speed. He can work as a return man if need be, and that skill may help him earn a reserve spot.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant expected to help in red zone    Fri Jul 11, 11:15 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers hope WR Martavis Bryant will be able to be a factor in the red zone and could also be a deep threat on offense, according to wide receivers coach Richard Mann. 'He's a big guy, different from what we've had, as far as his length. We feel like we can utilize his talents in the red zone. He has a big reach. He has good speed. So we can use him in various ways, as far as cleaning things out. He's also a deep threat. He does have the speed,' Mann said.

Footballguys view: Bryant is a talented rookie who we're excited about in the pros. He knows how to use his frame to box out smaller defenders and win at the point of the catch. Bryant could begin his career with the Steelers as a red-zone threat as he gets used to the pro game.

Steelers | Coach happy with Le'Veon Bell's work    Fri Jul 11, 08:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell performed well during offseason workouts and has been showing improvements in his game, according to manager Mike Tomlin. 'Le'Veon Bell has had a great offseason,' Tomlin said. 'He's really shown that he is excited about taking the next step in terms of work that he's done thus far, particularly from a conditioning standpoint.'

Footballguys view: Bell is ready for a breakout year. He's big enough to wear down opponents as the game goes on, plus Bell is a great receiving option out of the backfield. He's got the making of a bellcow back, and the team may give him over 300 carries in 2014.

Steelers | Dri Archer to be used at multiple positions    Fri Jul 11, 08:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer will receive playing time at running back and wide receiver this upcoming season, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Archer is listed as a running back, but he's built more like a small slot receiver. He's fast in a straight line, but Archer is never going to run through an arm tackle. The Steelers could use him in multiple ways, but he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy factor in 2014.

Steelers | Preseason to determine RB rotation    Fri Jul 11, 08:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said training camp and preseason games will determine how the team uses RBs Le'Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount and Dri Archer in the running game.

Footballguys view: We're likely to see Bell as the primary back. He can hammer the rock between the tackles, plus he's a fantastic receiver out of the backfield. Blount will be a short-yardage and goal line option for the team. Archer is more like a slot receiver than he is a running back. We're not that confident in Todd Haley to be creative enough to use him effectively.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey praised by coach    Thu Jul 10, 07:05 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey received praise from offensive line coach Mike Munchak recently, who said Pouncey's teammates really rally around him and have been encouraged by his comeback from a torn ACL last season. Munchak said he's excited about the progress Pouncey has made.

Footballguys view: We're excited about Pouncey's ability to dominate when healthy. The Steelers are looking to improve the offensive production, and that all starts up front. A healthy Pouncey will be effective and help both the ground and the passing game.

Steelers | Two linemen could compete for one spot    Wed Jul 9, 01:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Guy Whimper and OT Wesley Johnson could compete for one roster spot during training camp if the team decides to keep only eight offensive linemen on their final roster.

Footballguys view: Johnson should have the upper hand because he can conceivably play all 5 offensive line positions. This is huge for an offensive line that has dealt with as many injuries as any in the league over the last few years.

Steelers | Three fighting for No. 5 WR job    Mon Jul 7, 06:59 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Justin Brown, Darrius Heyward-Bey and Derek Moye are still battling for the No. 5 wide receiver job. WRs Antonio Brown, Lance Moore, Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant hold the top four spots on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Justin Brown has been the subject of some positive reports and he should be seen as the leader right now. Heyward-Bey would add speed, and Moye would be the biggest receiver on the roster, so this will be an interesting battle to watch.

Steelers | May go with three RBs on roster    Fri Jul 4, 07:35 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers may consider keeping on RBs Le'Veon Bell, LeGarrette Blount and Dri Archer on their final roster and having one running back on their practice squad.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see Tauren Poole make the final roster or the practice squad. He's a talented runner who is capable between the tackles, and he has the burst to hit the corner when he gets to the second level. He'll compete with all-purpose back Alvester Alexander and MJD-clone (poor man's version) Miguel Maysonet for the fourth spot on the depth chart.
