Steelers | Nick Vannett has chance to return    Sun Jan 5, 11:21 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent TE Nick Vannett could re-sign with the Steelers this offseason if the team moves on from TE Vance McDonald. The Steelers are also expected to target a tight end during the 2020 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Vannett was traded back in late September and played 13 games with the Steelers in 2019. He only caught 13 passes for 128 yards with his new team but he could have a larger role if Vannett stays with the Steelers for 2020. In 2020, McDonald will earn a base salary of $5.5 million while carrying a cap hit of $7.1 million and a dead cap value of $1.45 million.

Steelers | Diontae Johnson busy as a rookie    Sat Jan 4, 09:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson led all rookies with 59 receptions this season, finishing with 680 receiving yards and five scores.

Footballguys view: The Steelers know how to find wide receiver talent in the draft, and that's what they did with another pick here in Johnson. A third-round pick out of Toledo, Johnson was a big-play specialist for the Steelers and should be the No.2 receiver for them opposite of JuJu Smith-Schuster in 2020. With Ben Roethlisberger back at quarterback, Johnson should be able to post even better numbers in his sophomore season.

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Devin Bush led all rookies with 109 total tackles in 2019. His 72 solo stops ranked second among rookies, and he added a sack, two interceptions, a forced fumble, four fumbles recoveries, six passes defensed and a defensive score.

Footballguys view: The Steelers moved up to the No.10 overall pick to select Bush out of Michigan in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft...and for good reason. He's an incredible talent who should be a core player for the Steelers defense for years to come.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger set for February recheck    Tue Dec 31, 05:04 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) reportedly has a medical checkup scheduled in February that will be 'significant in terms of mapping out what is next,' according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger insists that he's going to keep playing football for years to come. The reality is that Father Time has to be catching up to him...just like it did his draft classmates Eli Manning and Philip Rivers. We should see him severely limited this offseason with an eye on a return for the veteran quarterback during training camp.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (quadriceps) on Friday, Dec. 27, was ruled out of the team's Week 17 game against the Baltimore Ravens.

Footballguys view: Kerrith Whyte, Jaylen Samuels, and Benny Snell will split the work in his stead. It's possible the team looks to free agency or the draft to bolster the backfield despite spending picks at the position in each of the last three drafts.

Pittsburgh Steelers FB Roosevelt Nix (knee) and WR Ryan Switzer (back) were designated to return from the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, Dec. 26.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger determined    Wed Dec 25, 01:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger took to Twitter to announce that he has been working hard and is more determined than ever to come back stronger next year.

Footballguys view: Retirement is always going to be swirling around Roethlisberger at this point in his career, but he seems bound and determined after missing most of the 2019 season. The other top QBs in his draft class, Philip Rivers and Eli Manning, seem to be near the end of their playing days. Perhaps Roethlisberger can find more success than those two in 2020. Either way, the Steelers need to be thinking about the future at the position as Mason Rudolph (or anyone else currently on the roster) is a long-term answer.

Steelers | James Conner very iffy for Week 17    Tue Dec 24, 01:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner's (thigh) availability is very much in question for Week 17, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Tomlin said Conner's Week 17 availability is "very much in question." They'll monitor him during the week of practice and turn to Benny Snell, Kerrith Whyte and Jaylen Samuels if need be. The Steelers have a must-win against the Ravens if they want to go to the postseason (they also need the Titans to lose).

Steelers | Mason Rudolph to IR    Tue Dec 24, 09:54 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph (shoulder) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 24.

Footballguys view: Rudolph was supposed to be the heir apparent to Ben Roethlisberger but this year he showed that he was not a starting-caliber quarterback in the NFL. He finishes his season having played in 10 games, throwing for 1,765 yards (62.2 percent completion rate) with 13 touchdowns and nine interceptions. The Steelers have a must-win game against the Ravens in Week 17. Devlin Hodges and Paxton Lynch are their two quarterbacks now. A win over the Ravens and a Titans loss means the Steelers are headed to the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger (elbow) is recovering from surgery to reattach three tendons in his elbow, and the team is optimistic about his availability for 2020, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger was missed most of this season and the Steelers offense did not look the same. He is not been cleared to throw at this point, but he expects to play next season and beyond.

Steelers | More on Mason Rudolph's injury    Mon Dec 23, 02:17 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph (shoulder) is expected to be sidelined for multiple weeks because of his shoulder injury, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Devlin Hodges continues as the team's starter but he might have a short hook if he continues to struggle. Former first-round pick (Broncos) Paxton Lynch is currently behind Hodges on the depth chart.

Steelers | James Conner getting checked out    Mon Dec 23, 01:39 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (quad) is awaiting the results of an MRI on the quad injury he suffered on his final carry of Week 16.

Footballguys view: Conner gets banged up quite a bit, so the Steelers are used to playing without him. We'll see if he can be available for the Week 17 season finale against the Ravens. If not, the Steelers will turn to Benny Snell, Kerrith Whyte and Jaylen Samuels.

Steelers | Juju Smith-Schuster does very little    Sun Dec 22, 04:37 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Juju Smith-Schuster ended up with two grabs for 22 yards on four targets in Week 16 against the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster had a chance to extend the game but had the ball go through his hands. He wasn't in top form and will hopefully get back to 100% without surgery this offseason.

Steelers | Diontae Johnson posts 81 yards, TD    Sun Dec 22, 04:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Diontae Johnson registered eight grabs for 81 yards and a touchdown in Week 16 against the New York Jets on nine targets.

Footballguys view: Johnson reeled in yet another long touchdown from Mason Rudolph and was a hit if he was put in as a what the heck flex even though Juju Smith-Schuster returned this week.

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph (shoulder) completed 14-of-20 passes for 129 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the Week 16 loss against the New York Jets in relief of the ineffective QB Devlin Hodges.

Footballguys view: The Steelers don't have an NFL starting quality quarterback right now. They can still make the playoffs if the Texans beat the Titans next week and they beat the resting Ravens, but the talent at wide receiver can't be harnessed without Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | James Conner out of game    Sun Dec 22, 02:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (thigh) suffered a thigh injury during the Week 16 game and is considered questionable to return.
