Steelers | Joshua Dobbs could be No. 2 QB    Sat Apr 29, 04:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs is expected to compete with QB Landry Jones for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We could see Dobbs beating out Jones...mostly because Jones isn't that good. Dobbs is super smart and athletic, but he needs to make quicker/better decisions as a passer. He locks onto targets and relays his intentions with his eyes. Make no doubt about it, Dobbs is a project.

Free-agent CB Keenan Lewis (Saints) is meeting with the Pittsburgh Steelers Saturday, April 29.

Steelers | Pittsburgh adds James Conner     Fri Apr 28, 11:47 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected RB James Conner with the 105th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: A hard, physical runner without much speed or quickness. Conner is a tough player though, and a hard worker who might be able to be a solid short yardage back.

Steelers | Cameron Sutton drafted by Pittsburgh    Fri Apr 28, 11:07 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected CB Cameron Sutton with the 94th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: A very experienced player who can play man coverage outside, but doesn't play physically enough in the run game. He has special teams use as well with punt return skills.

Steelers | Pittsburgh selects JuJu Smith-Schuster    Fri Apr 28, 09:39 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected WR JuJu Smith-Schuster with the 62nd pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Steelers get quite a good player here. JuJu's strong hands, my-ball mentality, aggressiveness and physical game will be a great addition to this offense. With the speedy Antonio Brown on one side, Smith-Schuster should feast on the other.

Steelers | Pittsburgh selects T.J. Watt    Thu Apr 27, 11:33 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers selected Wisconsin LB T.J. Watt with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: J.J. Watt's little brother is a great fit for the Steelers defense. He's got a great motor and is a very good run defender. He's not as speedy off the edge as his brother can be, but the Steelers will be happy to have him for many years to come.

Steelers | No hope for Ladarius Green?    Wed Apr 26, 09:05 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers do not appear to have much faith in TE Ladarius Green producing for them, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette.

Footballguys view: Jesse James is in line to be the starter with Xavier Grimble coming on as a receiving tight end. Don't be surprised if the Steelers take a receiving tight end this weekend. They have been linked to Ole Miss TE Evan Engram in the first round more often as the draft has gotten closer.

Steelers | Sammie Coates to compete for job    Wed Apr 26, 10:12 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates will have to compete with WR Justin Hunter for a roster spot after WR Martavis Bryant was reinstated.

Footballguys view: This is a bit of shock after all of the offseason buzz around Coates last year. He should be able to hold off Hunter, but there might be some disappointment with the development of the 2015 third-rounder in the organization if he is really competing to stay on the roster. His dynasty value has taken a huge hit with the reinstatement of Martavis Bryant this week.

Steelers | More on Martavis Bryant    Tue Apr 25, 04:32 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant cannot attend practices or play in the preseason until he finds a treating clinician.

Footballguys view: It's all part of Bryant getting his life and his football career back on track. With the help of a clinician, Bryant must then plan activities for Pittsburgh's bye week and next offseason in an effort to keep him out of trouble.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant reinstated    Tue Apr 25, 04:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant was reinstated from his suspension Tuesday, April 25. Bryant served a season-long suspension last year for multiple violations of the league's substance-abuse policy.

Footballguys view: The potential for 50 catches and 6-8 touchdowns is always there with a player like Bryant. If he gets things figured out off the field, then he can flourish in the Steelers high-powered passing attack.

Steelers | Steelers still unsure about Martavis Bryant    Tue Apr 25, 01:04 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers still have heard nothing from the league regarding WR Martavis Bryant's reinstatement from suspension days before the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: According to general manager Kevin Colbert, the team now must 'operate under the assumption that, until he is here, he is not here.' This means we could see the Steelers go after a wide receiver at some time during the 2017 NFL draft.

Suspended Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant met Thursday, April 13, with the NFL's Management Council as part of his efforts for reinstatement from a year-long drug suspension.

Footballguys view: This is all part of the process as Bryant gets his life back on track. Among the conditions for being cleared to play again, Bryant was told to assemble a plan detailing safeguards that would help him prevent a relapse upon returning to Pittsburgh, according to this report.

Steelers | Pittsburgh bringing in prospects    Thu Apr 13, 11:04 PM

West Virginia CB Rasul Douglas, Tennessee TE Jason Croom and Western Michigan LB Keion Adams visited the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, April 12.

Footballguys view: Croom has good athleticism, concentration and can line up in line or in the slot. It's a super deep TE class, arguably the best in NFL history, so Croom is just a late-round or priority free agent sleeper to keep an eye on. The Steelers need help at the TE position, and we expect them to select at least one during the 2017 NFL draft.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger wants tight end    Tue Apr 11, 03:35 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger has already lobbied to head coach Mike Tomlin to draft a tigh end, according to NFL Network's Aditi Kinkhabwala.

Footballguys view: The Steelers offense hasn't been the same without Heath Miller. They want Ladarius Green to be that impact tight end but health concerns are a big problem for him. This draft class has the best tight ends to enter the league perhaps in NFL history. The Steelers would be wise to select a tight end at some point in the first few rounds of the draft.

Steelers | Big Ben confirms he will play in 2017    Fri Apr 7, 02:25 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger informed the Steelers he will return for a 14th season in 2017.

Footballguys view: Yup, that's what we figured. The Steelers are good to go (and a Super Bowl contender) with Roethlisberger on the field this year. However, they need to think about the future and try to find his heir apparent. That could come in the form of Nate Peterman (PITT) in the second or third round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Steelers | Four prospects visiting Steelers    Mon Apr 3, 11:16 AM

Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs, Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes, Texas A&M WR Josh Reynolds and Northern Illinois WR Kenny Golladay are visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, April 3.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are looking for a QB to groom behind Ben Roethlisberger. Dobbs is likely a mid-round pick who has the intelligence and athleticism to be an intriguing prospect. Mahomes is likely a first-round pick, and it would be a surprise to see the Steelers go in that direction early.

Steelers | Pittsburgh keeping tabs on Brad Kaaya    Fri Mar 31, 09:59 PM

Miami (Fla.) QB Brad Kaaya's pro day workout Wednesday, March 29, was observed by Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert.

Footballguys view: Kaaya is an interesting developmental QB to monitor. His accuracy kept going up during his college career at Miami, and Kaaya is a rare pro-style pocket passer. Kaaya can maneuver in the pocket to avoid pressure, but if he can he will rush throws early rather than challenge defenses downfield. His arm strength is a concern at the pro level. Kaaya might go off the board in the second round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Steelers | Mike Tomlin sees 'leap' for Sammie Coates    Thu Mar 30, 06:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates is expected 'to take another leap' next season, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Coates will have room to make an impression with Martavis Bryant suspended, though the latter is expected to be reinstated. If Coates can be reliable, he might jump Bryant's spot, especially given his lack of issues off the field.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant's reinstatement imminent?    Thu Mar 30, 12:25 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is expecting to hear back from the NFL soon in regards to his reinstatement from a year-long suspension for multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy. Per the Beaver County Times' Chris Bradford, a league source told the paper on Wednesday, March 29, that Bryant's reinstatement is "imminent." According to Bryant's agents, the receiver has added 25 pounds of muscle and is in 'excellent condition'.

Footballguys view: Bryant is another in the long line of players who need to wake up before they ruin their careers. He has physical talent, but his talent to get into trouble seems to be causing problems.

Steelers | Mike Tomlin not talking Darrelle Revis    Wed Mar 29, 04:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin would not say if the Steelers have any interest in free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets).

Footballguys view: Revis could go back to the Patriots, but earlier reports indicate he wants to play for the Steelers. The PITT product is no longer the same player he used to be, and perhaps a move to safety is best for him in 2017.

Steelers | Pittsburgh talks with Brad Kaaya    Wed Mar 29, 02:03 PM

Miami (Fla.) QB Brad Kaaya met with representatives from the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, March 28.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use a young QB to groom behind Ben Roethlisberger. Kaaya has operated under center as a three year starter for the Miami Hurricanes. His arm strength and pass placement needs work before he'll be ready for a pro game.

Steelers | David Njoku meets with Pittsburgh    Wed Mar 29, 02:02 PM

Miami (Fla.) TE David Njoku met with representatives from the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, March 28.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need a young TE who can be a weapon on offense. Njoku has drawn comparisons to Greg Olsen (Panthers) because of his size and ability to create mismatches. He's likely to go off the board in the first or second round of the 2017 NFL draft.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger expected to play    Tue Mar 28, 10:57 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is expected to play in 2017, according to head coach Mike Tomlin. Tomlin said he hasn't asked him directly, but he expects him to play.

Footballguys view: Of course Roethlisberger is going to play...but how long he keeps playing is a real question. The Steelers don't have an heir apparent behind him, so they should try to add a QB at some point in the 2017 NFL draft.

Steelers | Mike Tomlin unfazed by Roethlisberger talk    Mon Mar 27, 10:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin think it's a 'very reasonable discussion when you get 35,' referring to quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's retirement talk, but ultimately, he feels people 'probably read too much into it' and 'are making more out of than what it is.'

Footballguys view: Tomlin is on the right track here. Roethlisberger has to be considering when his time in the NFL is done, but it's not just yet. The Steelers need to be prepared for life without Big Ben as their only option behind him right now is Landry Jones...and that's not a good option.

Steelers | PIT planning for Ben Roethlisberger return    Sun Mar 26, 06:26 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the Steelers are proceeding as if QB Ben Roethlisberger will play in 2017.

Footballguys view: The retirement talk was always a little overblown with Roethlisberger. He's going to play this year, but the Steelers do need to start planning a future that doesn't include their future Hall of Fame QB. Landry Jones is not a franchise QB, so the Steelers should be looking to find one through the draft.

Steelers | No timetable for Le'Veon Bell    Sun Mar 26, 04:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said there is no timetable for RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) but the team wants him to be 100 percent for the start of the 2017 season.

Footballguys view: The Steelers will wisely take it easy on Bell as he recovers from his groin injury. Don't be surprised if he doesn't do much in OTAs or minicamp. We'll have a better feel for his status when training camp begins.

Steelers | Pittsburgh to work out Nate Peterman    Sat Mar 25, 02:35 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh QB Nate Peterman said he is scheduled to have a private workout with the Pittsburgh Steelers in April.

Footballguys view: Peterman is our favorite mid-round QB prospect in the 2017 NFL draft. He's smart, has the instincts to make every throw in the pros, and Peterman isn't afraid to challenge a defense vertically. He was the most impressive QB at the Senior Bowl earlier this year and is an intriguing developmental player. The Steelers need to think about their future after Ben Roethlisberger. He was talking retirement, but Roethlisberger is returning to play in 2017.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams could still re-join PIT    Thu Mar 23, 07:43 PM

Free-agent RB DeAngelo Williams (Steelers) could still re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers despite the team recently adding RB Knile Davis, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Williams has managed to dodge Father Time the last few seasons and proven to be a very nice backup to LeVeon Bell. But Bell won't start the season suspended this year and so it's unlikely that Williams or Davis will have much value this year as more than a handcuff.

Steelers | Jesse James struggled with consistency    Thu Mar 23, 07:25 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James failed to register consecutive weeks after the first two games of the 2016 season in which he produced 20 or more receiving yards, despite playing in all 16 contests and starting 13 of them.

Footballguys view: James seems like he could be a very good tight end if he can be consistent, which he clearly couldn't last season. We're wary of thinking that's going to change next year but more experience can only help.

Jesse James player page

Steelers | Nate Peterman to meet with Pittsburgh    Wed Mar 22, 06:04 PM

Pittsburgh QB Nate Peterman is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers at some point in April.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use a guy like Peterman to develop as an eventual starter behind Ben Roethlisberger. Peterman has a gunslinger mentality and isn't afraid to challenge a defense deep. His arm strength is a question mark, and he'll have to better drive throws to the sidelines at the pro level. Peterman is likely a mid-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.
