Steelers | James Conner thrived on big plays    Sun Jun 23, 01:06 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner gained 340 of his 972 rushing yards on runs of 15 yards or longer last season, according to Pro Football Focus.

Footballguys view: Conner definitely benefited from an offense that kept defenses off balance behind a great offensive line and dangerous downfield passing game. Antonio Brown's loss is a negative, but overall the situation is still a positive. He isn't a speedy back, so the longer gains may be limited this year with defenses able to contract unless James Washington, Donte Moncrief, or third-round pick Diontae Johnson present a credible downfield threat opposite Juju Smith-Schuster.

Steelers | Eli Rogers on the bubble?    Fri Jun 21, 09:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers will compete with WR Ryan Switzer in training camp and the preseason for a spot on the 53-man roster, in the opinion of Bob Labriola of Steelers.com.

Steelers | Ryan Switzer fighting for spot    Fri Jun 21, 09:14 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Ryan Switzer is likely competing for WR Eli Rogers to be the final receiver kept on the 53-man roster, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could target the slot receiver more often with Antonio Brown gone. Switzer is the more physically gifted player and can contribute as a returner, while Rogers has more experience with Ben Roethlisberger. The winner is unlikely to be relevant in fantasy leagues without multiple injuries to Steelers receivers/Vance McDonald.

Steelers | Jaylen Samuels working on speed    Fri Jun 21, 02:05 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Samuels has focused on improving his speed this offseason and believes he has done that, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Samuels should be used more in two-back backfields and as a tight end/H-back if the Steelers offense is evolving. He's an intriguing pick later in PPR leagues with his unique skillset and James Conner injury upside - albeit dampened by fourth round pick Benny Snell joining the running back room.

Steelers | Pittsburgh looking to share RB workload?    Thu Jun 13, 02:15 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner amassed more than 62 percent of his team's carries and 64 percent of the targets to running backs last season, but he is under the impression those numbers will come down this season based on what he has seen during spring practices, especially from Jaylen Samuels and rookie Benny Snell.'I think it'll be spread out pretty evenly. ... 'I've seen (Snell's) college tape. He's also learned the offense really quick. I know he'll be ready to play this year. Jaylen, obviously, is going to make a lot of plays, too,' Conner told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Footballguys view: Keep this in mind when consider Conner in your fantasy drafts this year. Conner has a current ADP of RB9 (1.12) in 12-team PPR leagues. Snell is not getting drafted and Samuels is RB44 (10.02). We like Samuels as a valuable handcuff if you've got the bench space. If Conner were to miss time, Samuels has win-your-league upside and doesn't need to come off the field. We'll see how this group shakes out in training camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Diontae Johnson impresses his quarterback    Tue Jun 11, 09:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson was reportedly quite impressive during organized team activities, capturing the attention of QB Ben Roethlisberger by flashing sticky hands.'The one thing I noticed was he caught every ball I threw to him. I even threw him some bad balls on purpose, throw some high, behind him, just to see if he would catch them. And he caught every one. It was impressive,' Roethlisberger said Tuesday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Johnson may remind his quarterback of a young Emmanuel Sanders. That's a good comparison when considering what Johnson can be in the NFL. He's got the speed, fearlessness and big-play ability that Sanders brought to the field for the Steelers (and now for the Broncos). We're excited about Johnson in dynasty formats.

Steelers | Big role for Donte Moncrief?    Fri Jun 7, 09:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Donte Moncrief said he has 'the potential to make a big impact' in the passing game and believes the receiving group can be 'electric' in 2019.

Footballguys view: The Steelers (and Fantasy GMs) are looking for their Antonio Brown replacement in 2019. JuJu Smith-Schuster will do his thing as the No. 1 receiver, but behind him there is a hole from Brown being traded away to the Raiders. We'll see if James Washington or Moncrief or rookie Deiontae Johnson emerges as a viable option behind Smith-Schuster in the WR corps.

Steelers | Pittsburgh hoping to spread the wealth    Mon Jun 3, 02:14 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster is the 'obvious primary option' in the passing game, but the team believes it will have at least nine viable pass-catching options, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. TE Vance McDonald is 'poised for an expanded role,' while WR Donte Moncrief is being asked to learn all three receiver positions.

Footballguys view: Fantasy GMs know that Smith-Schuster is going to be a stud WR1 in 2019, but behind him there is nothing but potential breakout players and question marks. We'll be monitoring these battles at the Steelers WR position closely in training camp. Smith-Schuster is going off the board at WR6 (2.04) in 12-team PPR leagues. The other Steelers receivers currently being drafted include James Washington (WR46, 10.06) and Donte Moncrief (WR59, 13.12). In a high-powered Steelers passing attack, these are players to follow to and through training camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Mike Hilton practicing despite no deal    Fri May 24, 06:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Mike Hilton is participating in offseason workouts even though he has not signed his exclusive rights tender offer. Hilton is looking for more than the $645,000 the tender offer is worth but is looking to show he wants to be a part of the team.

Footballguys view: The Steelers got a great deal extending left tackle Alejandro Villanueva when he developed early and became a key piece on a UDFA deal. They should explore a long deal with Hilton to keep him happy and possibly save future money.

Steelers | Pittsburgh may use two RBs in backfield    Fri May 24, 06:04 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RBs James Conner and Jaylen Samuels lined up in the backfield together at times during practice this week, and Samuels said he believes that formation could cause problems for defenses.

Footballguys view: This is an innovation the Steelers need with Antonio Brown and lots of youth at wide receiver. Samuels proved he is an NFL quality runner last year and he can also block, run routes and catch balls like a tight end or H-back. He should be on the field more this year even if Conner is still the clear lead back.

Steelers | Pittsburgh adding Johnny Holton    Mon May 13, 06:44 PM

Free-agent WR Johnny Holton (Raiders) agreed to terms with the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, May 13, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Holton has plenty of speed and flashed a bit (mostly against the Broncos) in 2017. He spent last year on practice squads and was only targeted one time in one game. The Steelers have revamped their WR corps and Holton is going to be a long-shot to make the 53-man roster.

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Devin Bush signed his rookie contract Sunday, May 12. The four-year deal, with a fifth-year option, is worth a total of $18.9 million fully guaranteed.

Footballguys view: Bush will be a day one starter in Ryan Shazier's old spot, and hopefully stop the bleeding in the middle of the defense. He is a rookie of the year candidate and potential instant leader for a defense that has been sorely lacking speed and impact plays since losing Shazier.

Steelers | Zach Gentry inks rookie pact    Thu May 9, 04:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers fifth-round TE Zach Gentry (Michigan) signed a four-year contract Thursday, May 9. Financial terms of the deals were not immediately disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gentry didn't test well at the 2019 Scouting Combine, but that didn't stop the Steelers from selecting him near the top of the fifth round. At Michigan, Gentry flashed some ability as a receiver and has the size to be a much better blocker than he showed on film. He'll compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Vance McDonald.

Steelers | James Washington to play lighter in 2019    Thu May 9, 02:07 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington has reportedly 'slimmed down' this offseason and is expected to play around 210 pounds this season, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Hopefully Washington's lighter weight will help him play better. As a rookie, Washington only had 16 catches for 217 yards and one touchdown. He's got better talent than that stat line shows. With Antonio Brown gone to the Raiders, Washington has a chance to earn the no.2 spot for the Steelers opposite JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Steelers | Two Steelers picks sign    Wed May 8, 11:44 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers third-round pick WR Diontae Johnson and fourth-round pick RB Benny Snell signed four-year contracts Wednesday, May 8. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Johnson plays like a young version of Emmanuel Sanders. He's got speed to get by defenders in a hurry and is not afraid to go over the middle to make difficult catches. Johnson is likely to compete with Donte Moncrief for the no.3 receiver behind JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington. In the Steelers elaborate passing attack, that has fantasy value. Snell is competing to be the no.3 running back for the Steelers. He's a big back who can grind down opponents and has a nose for the end zone. Snell did not test well at the Scouting Combine but he does have good instincts for the position.

Steelers | Diontae Johnson to move around    Sun Apr 28, 08:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson is 'naturally gifted' and can line up anywhere on the field, according to wide receivers coach Darryl Drake.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a big play waiting to happen. He had touchdowns of 80 (receiving), 83 (punt return) and 98 (kick return) in 2018. Johnson is going to compete for a spot on the depth chart behind JuJu Smith-Schuster and James Washington. He reminds some in the scouting community of Emmanuel Sanders and is certainly a player we'll love to take super late in drafts if he flashes in the preseason.

Steelers | Coach expects more from James Washington    Mon Apr 22, 08:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington will have a bigger role in the passing game in 2019, and head coach Mike Tomlin said he expects great things from Washington.

Footballguys view: Washington has talent but didn't flash much as a rookie in 2018. He's got long arms and great ball-tracking ability which can be featured on big throws down the field. With Antonio Brown (Raiders) traded away, the Steelers are looking for talent to elevate at the wide receiver position behind JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Steelers | Pittsburgh could trade up    Sun Apr 21, 10:29 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers president Art Rooney II has not ruled out the possibility of trading up in the 2019 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The team currently holds the 20th overall pick in the first round and has 10 selections overall. There might be some player like a Devin Bush (ILB, Michigan) that interests the Steelers more than others and who won't be there when they pick at 20. The draft is certain to be full of twists and turns starting on Thursday.

Oklahoma WR Marquise Brown said he would love to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers even though he is the cousin of Oakland Raiders WR Antonio Brown.

Footballguys view: Breaking news; every rookie before the draft would love to play for any team in the league. Brown is dangerous after the catch and electric in the open field. He's set to be a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft and would love to play anywhere...even for the Steelers.
