Steelers | James Conner impressed team in spring    Mon Jul 16, 08:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner was 'very impressive during the spring' and 'really looks like he can be a solid every down running back in this league,' according to Mark Kaboly of The Athletic.

Steelers | No deal for Le'Veon Bell    Mon Jul 16, 04:00 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell was not signed to a long-term deal prior to the deadline Monday, July 16.

Footballguys view: The Steelers and Bell were not able to come to an agreement before the 4pm ET deadline on Monday. Now, Bell will play on his $14.5 million franchise tag and is set to become a free agent in 2019. Don't alter projections dramatically for Bell upon this news, even though Bell should stay away for training camp and the preseason like he did last year. He took to Twitter to write "My desire always has been to retire a Steeler...both sides worked extremely hard today to make that happen, but the NFL is a hard business at times...to the fans that had hope, I'm sorry we let you down but trust me, 2018 will be my best season to date."

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell deal doubtful?    Mon Jul 16, 08:24 AM

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell negotiated all weekend, but parties aren't optimistic a long-term deal will get done. It's expected to go down to the wire Monday, July 16.

Footballguys view: Bell is set to play this year on the franchise tag for the second year in a row. That would put around $14.5 million dollars in his pocket for one year of work. Expect a holdout through training camp if no long-term deal is done.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell extension close to getting done?    Sun Jul 15, 02:04 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell 'wants to get the deal done' ahead of the July 16 deadline for signing players on the franchise tag to a long-term extension, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: This one will come down to the wire. The main variable is probably what Bell thinks he can get in free agency next year. It already appears that the deal he would get now is less than what he was offered last summer, and it's certainly possible that he would get less than he is being offered now next year no matter how well he performs. The smart bet is probably that he plays this year under the franchise tag again, but this year it seems there's a better chance of a long term deal getting done than last year.

Steelers | Deadline closing in for Le'Veon Bell    Sat Jul 14, 03:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell has made some progress in long-term contract talks with the Steelers, but it is still uncertain whether the two sides will reach a deal before the July 16 deadline.

Footballguys view: We are still unconcerned about the contract issue, though at the end of the day it remains any situation to watch. Bell is arguably the top running back i fantasy. If you want him on your squad, you will have to pay dearly for him.

Steelers | Joshua Frazier could be used at DE    Sat Jul 14, 12:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Joshua Frazier is expected to be used as a nose tackle, but he believes he has the ability to play defensive end as well.

Steelers | Chukwuma Okorafor may be swing tackle    Fri Jul 13, 05:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers OT Chukwuma Okorafor may be the main backup to both offensive tackle spots this season because of OT Jerald Hawkins' (quadriceps) injury.

Footballguys view: Hawkins was expected to play a big role this year after Chris Hubbard signed a big contract in Cleveland to become their starting right tackle. Okorafor is more of a long-term project, but he could be thrown into the fire this year if the Steelers suffer an injury at either tackle position.

Steelers | B.J. Finney may start in 2019    Thu Jul 12, 02:24 PM

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell has one week    Mon Jul 9, 04:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell has exactly one week to sign a long-term deal before he potentially holds out.

Footballguys view: We expect a holdout, as neither side is budging. And we see both sides. An NFL life is short, so of course Bell -- whose position takes a ton of abuse on the field -- wants to get paid when he can. Meanwhile, the Steelers know that the running back position is one which has been devalued and whose market has dropped quite a bit. There has to be a middle ground, as Bell is a transcendent running back, and a vital part of the Steelers. We think they will find it at some point, though Bell might bet on himself, sign the franchise tag and enter the free agency market next spring. All of which is the long way to say Bell remains one of the top fantasy backs out there and worthy of a top five pick, holdout or no.

Steelers | Marcus Tucker could make roster    Sun Jul 8, 06:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Marcus Tucker has a chance to make the 53-man roster as a slot receiver, in the opinion of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Joe Rutter.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have Antonio Brown, Juju Smith-Schuster and second-round pick James Washington as locks at wide receiver, but otherwise have a free for all for the two remaining spots. Justin Hunter's physical talent and Darrius Heyward-Bey's speed and special teams contributions will be obstacles to Tucker making the team.

Steelers | Roosevelt Nix may see more time    Sun Jul 8, 06:15 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers FB Roosevelt Nix may receive more playing time as a blocker in the running game under offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner.

Footballguys view: LeVeon Bell's ultra-patient style might not mesh as well with a lead blocker as other top backs, but the Steelers running game wasn't as potent last year and could use some attention. Fichtner isn't expected to make any big changes from Todd Haley's system, so this could be one of the more significant differences.

Steelers | Cameron Sutton's role uncertain    Sun Jul 8, 06:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Cameron Sutton is expected to push CB Artie Burns for one of the starting cornerback jobs during training camp, but he could also be used as the No. 3 or No. 4 cornerback in subpackages or as a safety. Sutton also has a chance to be a punt returner this season.

Footballguys view: Sutton has inside-outside versatility and should play a large role in the secondary no matter how Burns performs in camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Fitzgerald Toussaint facing uphill battle    Sat Jul 7, 12:19 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Fitzgerald Toussaint will have a hard time making the 53-man roster because of the addition of RB Jaylen Samuels this offseason, in the opinion of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Joe Rutter.

Footballguys view: At the end of the day, Samuels is simply capable of more. Toussaint isn't a special teams ace either, which just makes it harder for him to remain on the team. Toussaint is probably fighting with James Conner and Stevan Ridley for a spot.

Steelers | Jaylen Samuels could have solid role    Sat Jul 7, 12:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Samuels could be featured on third downs and in short-yardage situations this season.

Footballguys view: Samuels is a versatile back who can also double as an H-back or tight end. He excels as a short and intermediate receiver, especially as an H-Back and Ben Roethlisberger has needed an emergency option when the pocket collapses since Heath Miller left. Samuels won't be a big-time starter with Le'Veon Bell in Pittsburgh, but he could have some flex appeal in PPR leagues either off the waiver wire or very late in drafts.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell probably will skip camp    Sat Jul 7, 12:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell probably will skip training camp if he does not receive a long-term contract before the July 16 deadline.

Footballguys view: We aren't terribly worried about that and neither are fantasy owners given the fact that his ADP is as the second pick overall. He can run the ball any way you need him to, he can catch it, he can score from anywhere on the field - the sky is always the limit with Bell. We'll see if the holdout moves Fantasy GMs away from him, but we suspect his ADP will not drop at all.

Steelers | Landry Jones preferred as short-term option    Sat Jul 7, 11:17 AM

Although the Pittsburgh Steelers view QB Mason Rudolph as their quarterback of the future, the team prefers QB Landry Jones as the short-term backup to QB Ben Roethlisberger, according to Joe Rutter of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review.

Footballguys view: It makes lot of sense since it's unlikely that Rudolph is anywhere near ready to take over in the event of an emergency. Jones has the experience and even if he's not the future, he's the reliable one right now. Neither has any value, since nobody expects Roethlisberger to be hurt this season though he was banged up in 2015 and 2016.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster should be popular target    Thu Jul 5, 02:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster is expected to receive at least 100 targets this season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster is a tough, hard nosed route-runner who can make big plays. Now that the Martavis Bryant Experience has ended, there's very little behind Antonio Brown, and Smith-Schuster has first crack at taking advantage of Brown's double-coverage. His ADP is at 22, which makes him tracking as a high-end WR3 with upside. We think that's value and he could easily end up a very strong WR2 most weeks.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger feeling his age    Wed Jul 4, 08:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said he is walking a 'fine line' between resting his body and working out to prepare for the upcoming season. 'My trainer will get me as prepared as I can be,' Roethlisberger said. 'But it is a fine line of what you can do at this age.'

Footballguys view: And this is why the Steelers drafted Mason Rudolph. Roethlisberger can blanch at the idea of someone replacing him all he wants, but he's made enough noise over the last few seasons to know the end is near. This year Roethlisberger remains a low-end QB1 or high-end QB2, in part because of the skill-position players he works with. But for dynasty owners consider yourself put on notice. Roethlisberger's career is drawing to a close.

Steelers | Progress in Le'Veon Bell talks    Tue Jun 26, 08:09 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said on NFL Network that the two sides are a lot closer on a contract extension than they were last season. 'That's what I'm happy about,' Bell said. 'None of that matters if we don't get it done. Hopefully we'll try to get something done. That's what I'm looking forward to. I got confidence we'll get it done. I want to do it.' Bell said he didn't think he'd have fewer touches in offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner's system. However, he could have more catches than rushes sometimes.

Footballguys view: Bell held out through training camp last year after getting the franchise tag, and he says he's prepared to do the same in 2018. Progress is great, but deals get done at deadlines in the NFL. That means we should look for something to happen (if at all) in mid-July.

Steelers | James Washington likely to be No. 3 WR    Mon Jun 25, 06:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington is expected to be the No. 3 receiver for the Steelers this season. WR JuJu Smith-Schuster likely will be the slot receiver in three-receiver sets, while Washington and WR Antonio Brown would be the outside receivers.

Footballguys view: Washington has long arms to haul in passes over the heads of smaller defenders. He's not the fastest guy, but Washington is fantastic tracking deep passes down the sideline. He has 'late hands' and doesn't tip off that a pass is coming in. We'll likely see him work as the no.3 WR for the Steelers in 2018.

Steelers | Marcus Tucker learning from veterans    Sat Jun 23, 09:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Marcus Tucker said WR Darrius Heyward-Bey has been helping him improve as a receiver and on special teams. 'He is one of the guys I look up to as far as effort, working hard and knowledge,' Tucker said.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Northern Michigan in 2016, Tucker is hoping to make the 53-man roster after spending two years on the team's practice squad. We should see rookie James Washington as the third WR on the depth chart behind Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster. That leaves Tucker to compete for two or three more spots at the position with guys like Heyward-Bey and Justin Hunter.

Steelers | Big Ben has helped Mason Rudolph    Wed Jun 20, 09:36 PM

Steelers | Joshua Dobbs appears to be odd man out    Mon Jun 18, 01:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs probably will not make the 53-man roster unless there is an injury to one of the other quarterbacks or if a quarterback is traded.

Footballguys view: Dobbs is a literal rocket scientist (aerospace engineer major in college at Tennessee) but he lacks the ability needed to stick in the pros. When the Steelers selected QB Mason Rudolph in the 2018 NFL draft, the writing was on the wall for Dobbs. We'll see Rudolph, Dobbs and Landry Jones compete in training camp to establish the pecking order behind Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | James Washington sees time with starters    Sun Jun 17, 10:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR James Washington spent time with the first-team offense in three-receiver sets during minicamp.

Footballguys view: The Steelers don't hit on every pick, but they have shown a knack for finding WR talent in the NFL draft. Washington was incredibly productive during his time at Oklahoma State. Over the last three years, Washington has more receiving yards than any other college receiver during that time. He knows how to pluck the ball out of the air and has 'late hands' on deep passes...meaning he doesn't tip off the pass is coming to him until the final moment. Washington has the ability to become a favorite WR for Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger won't pursue extension    Sun Jun 17, 08:07 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger won't pursue an extension on his contract, which expires in two years, over the summer months.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger has a cap hit of $23.2 million each of the next two seasons. Set to hit the open market in 2020, the Steelers might want to extend him a couple of more years. Roethlisberger was talking retirement (or at least hinting at it)...then Pittsburgh drafted QB Mason Rudolph. Now, Roethlisberger talks like he wants to play five more years. Roethlisberger said he prefers to just play football and let his representation worry about the money.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster likes the slot    Fri Jun 15, 12:13 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster said he likes playing in the slot because it fits his aggressive style of play. 'I like playing inside,' Smith-Schuster said. 'I just love the physicalness of being in the box with the bigger guys.'

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster has been limited to individual drills in OTAs and minicamp due to a lingering knee issue. He's expected to be a full participant once training camp rolls around. Right now, Smith-Schuster is going off the board at WR20 (4.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Jaylen Samuels doing it all    Thu Jun 14, 10:07 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jaylen Samuels has been doing all the things RB Le'Veon Bell normally does for the offense during practice. 'He's a hybrid guy who can move around and do some things,' wide receivers coach Darryl Drake said. 'I like his skill set.'

Footballguys view: Samuels is a hybrid player who really doesn't have a position. He's listed as a running back, but he can play H-back, tight end, fullback and even slot receiver if need be. The rookie will compete for a spot on the depth chart behind Bell and his primary backup James Conner.

Steelers | Mason Rudolph pushing for backup gig    Thu Jun 14, 09:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Mason Rudolph has lived up to expectations, according to offensive coordinator Randy Fichtner, and could open the year as the No. 2 quarterback.

Footballguys view: Landry Jones is not an exciting option, but he's been okay (kind of/sort of) for the Steelers as a reserve. Rudolph could be groomed as the quarterback of the future behind Ben Roethlisberger.

Steelers | No talks between Le'Veon Bell, Steelers    Thu Jun 14, 04:07 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell is not having contract talks with the Steelers at this point.

Footballguys view: It's hard to know how the Steelers will play this for sure, but a new contract doesn't seem to be in the offing. It's a dangerous bit of chicken, because there are few backs in Bell's league and they can only franchise him so many times. If he has a big season, it will cost the Steelers. Bell should be a clear-cut RB1 in fantasy drafts this season.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster has knee issue    Wed Jun 13, 03:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster (knee) has been limited this offseason by what he referred to as a frustrating injury.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are going to be cautious with the talented second-year pro. Smith-Schuster has not participated in team drills during OTAs or minicamp, but he does expect to be ready when training camp begins.

Steelers | James Conner shows well in OTAs    Sun Jun 10, 04:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner caught the eye of QB Ben Roethlisberger during the team's recently completed OTAs, telling the Pittsburgh Tribune Live's Joe Rutter that Conner is 'looking really well right now' and that '(Conner) has gotten a lot better (since his rookie season).'

Footballguys view: That's good news for the second-year pro and for fantasy owners who have Conner in dynasty leagues. In deeper leagues where RB handcuffs are the rage, Conner is the one to attach to Le'Veon Bell in later rounds. He's not as versatile as Bell (few are), but Conner could be a thumper for the Steelers with a larger role.

Steelers | Justin Hunter working with starters    Sat Jun 2, 12:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Justin Hunter has been working with the first-team offense during organized team activities while WRs Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster have been absent.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be surprised Hunter is getting this work...especially considering the absences at camp. One should not be surprised either by Hunter's physical talent. He's always had an intriguing skill set, size/speed combination but Hunter has never really done more than flash here and there as a pro.

Steelers | Key Steelers absences explained    Thu May 31, 01:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has not been attending organized team activities due to the absence of QB Ben Roethlisberger. Brown prefers to work with his starting quarterback and Roethlisberger has been on a family vacation, according to C Maurkice Pouncey.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger did show up on the first day, so there's that. We don't really think Brown (who is a WR1 heading into this season again) and Roethlisberger (who is a QB1) really have much to worry about in terms of missing OTAs. This isn't their first rodeo, and they'll have their timing ready for the season.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (knee) has been practicing during OTAs, and TE Jesse James said Conner looks more confident this year. 'He's running fast, running every ball to the end zone,' James said. 'He looks good.'

Footballguys view: We wonder how much will leak about how good Connor is this year. The team and Le'Veon Bell still need to come to an agreement, if it's possible at all. We may hear a lot about Connor as leverage to see if Bell will take a lower offer than what he wants now. In reality Bell is the Workhorse back in this offense, and that won't change barring injury.

Steelers | Vance McDonald to have bigger role    Thu May 24, 11:03 PM

Footballguys view: The team wants McDonald to be their lead tight end in 2018. Now, he just needs to stay healthy and play up to the potential he's always had. We like taking McDonald as a super late TE2 in fantasy drafts if you've got a solid starter.
