Steelers | DeAngelo Williams could still re-join PIT    Thu Mar 23, 07:43 PM

Free-agent RB DeAngelo Williams (Steelers) could still re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers despite the team recently adding RB Knile Davis, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: Williams has managed to dodge Father Time the last few seasons and proven to be a very nice backup to LeVeon Bell. But Bell won't start the season suspended this year and so it's unlikely that Williams or Davis will have much value this year as more than a handcuff.

Steelers | Jesse James struggled with consistency    Thu Mar 23, 07:25 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James failed to register consecutive weeks after the first two games of the 2016 season in which he produced 20 or more receiving yards, despite playing in all 16 contests and starting 13 of them.

Footballguys view: James seems like he could be a very good tight end if he can be consistent, which he clearly couldn't last season. We're wary of thinking that's going to change next year but more experience can only help.

Steelers | Nate Peterman to meet with Pittsburgh    Wed Mar 22, 06:04 PM

Pittsburgh QB Nate Peterman is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers at some point in April.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use a guy like Peterman to develop as an eventual starter behind Ben Roethlisberger. Peterman has a gunslinger mentality and isn't afraid to challenge a defense deep. His arm strength is a question mark, and he'll have to better drive throws to the sidelines at the pro level. Peterman is likely a mid-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

Steelers | Pittsburgh to meet with Chris Godwin    Sun Mar 19, 05:10 PM

Penn State WR Chris Godwin is scheduled to meet with the Pittsburgh Steelers before the 2017 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Godwin is an interesting sleeper WR to monitor in this draft class. He's a second- or third-round pick who has a knack for catching the ball. In fact, he makes spectacular catches seem routine with his concentration, body control and strong hands.

Steelers | Ladarius Green plans to be at workouts    Fri Mar 17, 06:36 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) said he expects to participate in the offseason workouts and is excited to return.

Footballguys view: Green looked good, but he only lasted six games in his first season with the Steelers last year. He's yet to be cleared medically, but we should know more about the situation when OTAs begin in April.

Steelers | Justin Hunter agrees with Steelers    Wed Mar 15, 11:05 AM

Free-agent WR Justin Hunter (Bills) agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday, March 15.

Footballguys view: Hunter is a great athlete who can fly down the field and adjust to poorly thrown passes. He's never really flourished in the NFL, but Hunter is big enough and athletic enough to work as a red-zone threat at least in the high-powered Steelers offense.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant awaiting reinstatement    Tue Mar 14, 09:29 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is eligible to return from his one-year suspension, and the league has until the end of March to rule on his reinstatement.

Steelers | Pittsburgh hosting Justin Hunter    Mon Mar 13, 03:39 PM

Free-agent WR Justin Hunter (Bills) is visiting the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, March 13.

Footballguys view: Hunter has very good physical skill, but he's failed to play up to his potential in multiple NFL stops. At most, he could be a red-zone option and reserve receiver for a team like the Steelers.

Steelers | Landry Jones contract update    Thu Mar 9, 07:26 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers QB Landry Jones signed a two-year deal worth $4.4 million. The deal includes $600,000 in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Given he knows the system, and is relatively cheap, the Steelers will overlook his complete lack of upside. Jones is a mess and drags this offense down when he's in the game - even guys like new moneybags Antonio Brown and LeVeon Bell. When he's in the game, temper your expectations.

Steelers | Landry Jones re-signs with PIT    Thu Mar 9, 05:51 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers re-signed free-agent QB Landry Jones to a two-year contract Thursday, March 9. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Jones should not be considered a QB of the future for the Steelers, but he's the backup to Ben Roethlisberger for a couple of more years. Expect Pittsburgh to start looking for a young passer to groom behind Roethlisberter.

Steelers | Pittsburgh cut ties with Karlos Williams    Thu Mar 9, 05:37 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Karlos Williams was waived by the team Thursday, March 9.

Footballguys view: Williams flashed as a rookie for the Bills back in 2015, but it's been all downhill since then. He's still got two games to serve on his 10-game ban, so any team that considers him will have to take that into consideration. Williams got out of shape and now finds himself out of a job. We'll see if he can get back on track, but only dynasty players in super deep leagues should be monitoring him.

Steelers | Steelers not interested in Terrelle Pryor    Tue Mar 7, 01:53 AM

Updating a previous report, the Pittsburgh Steelers are actually not interested in signing Cleveland Browns impending free-agent WR Terrelle Pryor due to the fact he would likely cost more than $10 million annually.

Footballguys view: The Steelers were interested until they found out about his price tag. Adding Pryor would've been fun, but Martavis Bryant is now going to be relied on again opposite Antonio Brown.

Steelers | Pittsburgh may pursue Terrelle Pryor    Mon Mar 6, 06:27 PM

Cleveland Browns impending free-agent WR Terrelle Pryor is receiving interest from the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to sources.

Footballguys view: That would be a great addition for the Steelers high-powered passing attack. It seems like a bit of a pipe dream, but Pryor and Antonio Brown would give the Steelers one helluva one-two punch.

Steelers | Pittsburgh meets to two top LB prospects    Sun Mar 5, 07:17 PM

Alabama LB Tim Williams and Temple LB Haason Reddick met with the Pittsburgh Steelers at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: They're both likely to be first-round picks, but Reddick and Williams have completely different skill sets. Reddick is undersized by NFL standards (6'2" 237 pounds) but he explodes to the ball-carrier and diagnoses plays quickly as they unfold in front of him. Williams is a pass-rusher with size (6'4" 252 pounds) and multiple moves to get to the quarterback.

Steelers | Ross Cockrell tendered    Fri Mar 3, 11:56 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers restricted free-agent CB Ross Cockrell received an original-round tender Friday, March 3, according to a source.   Steelers | Pitt, Le'Veon Bell talking long-term deal    Thu Mar 2, 05:45 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell and the Steelers are heavily involved in negotiations on a long-term deal, according to a source. Terms of the possible deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Bell isn't going anywhere. There's not enough Iron City Brewing Company beverages in the whole city to make the team drunk enough to let him leave. It will cost them, but Bell is staying and should be a top fantasy player next season.

Steelers | GM expects Ben Roethlisberger back    Wed Mar 1, 02:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said he expects to see QB Ben Roethlisberger on the field when the team starts their offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The retirement talk may just be that. Roethlisberger should be back for the Steelers in 2017, and we see him keeping Pittsburgh in the playoff picture and continuing his QB2 value with fantasy owners.

Steelers | No decision on Le'Veon Bell surgery    Wed Mar 1, 02:31 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert said RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) still has not decided whether he will undergo groin surgery and will need to make a decision in the near future. Bell recently had a second opinion on his groin injury.

Footballguys view: Is it a second or third opinion? Bell has heard that he needs surgery, and he's heard that he doesn't need surgery. Either way, Bell is going to be eased into any offseason work for the Steelers.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant to be reinstated soon?    Tue Feb 28, 05:44 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant could be reinstated in as soon as two weeks 'if the [NFL] does not drag its feet', according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette.

Footballguys view: The Steelers could use Bryant, and we should see him back for 2017. Bryant applied for reinstatement in January after serving a one-year suspension for his second violation of failing drug tests.

Steelers | Markus Wheaton may not return    Tue Feb 28, 05:35 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent WR Markus Wheaton has been shown little interest as far as being re-signed, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked if Wheaton returned to the Steelers. His disappointing career with the Steelers comes to a close (most likely) after a bad 2016 where he only caught four passes for 51 yards and one touchdown. The market won't be hot for Wheaton, and he's looking at a "prove it" deal if he wants to keep playing in 2017.

Steelers | Antonio Brown agrees to big deal    Mon Feb 27, 05:36 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown reached an agreement to become the NFL's highest paid wide receiver Monday, Feb. 27, according to a source. Brown will earn more than $15 million per year.

Footballguys view: Brown is now tied to the Steelers through 2021, his age-33 season. It's a good move for both sides as Brown gets proper market value while the Steelers continue with one of the best receivers in the NFL.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell tagged    Mon Feb 27, 04:01 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell received the franchise tag Monday, Feb. 27, as expected, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Bell was given the exclusive franchise tag, meaning he cannot negotiate with other teams. The tag will earn Bell at least $12 million for 2017.

Steelers | Tag likely for Le'Veon Bell    Mon Feb 27, 02:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell is expected to receive the franchise tag before the franchise tag deadline Wednesday, March 1.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Bell avoided groin surgery this offseason, so expect the Steelers to take it easy on their superstar back during OTAs and minicamp. They'll have until July 15th to work on a long-term deal that could make Bell the highest paid RB in the league.
