Steelers | Le'Veon Bell targets third preseason game    Tue Jun 28, 10:07 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) is optimistic to be ready by the third preseason game.

Footballguys view: Bell may actually be ready to play at that time, but the Steelers may not want to risk anything by playing their superstar back in an exhibition game. If he does play in Week 3 of the preseason, we'd imagine that Bell would play a limited number of snaps. The plan is to have him ready for Week 1 of the regular season. At this time, things seem to be on track.

Steelers | Brandon Johnson joins Pittsburgh     Fri Jun 24, 04:26 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Brandon L. Johnson (Penn State) signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers Friday, June 24. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Steelers | Shaun Suisham cut    Fri Jun 24, 10:05 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers PK Shaun Suisham was released Friday, June 24. PK Chris Boswell enters training camp as the likely starter.

Footballguys view: Boswell was first in the league in field goal attempts and makes per game last year, and he was second to only Stephen Gostkowski in scoring per game. He deserves to go in the top five kickers despite the Steelers hints that they might go for two as much as or more than any team in the league this year.

Steelers | Pittsburgh could trade a kicker    Mon Jun 20, 01:52 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers PKs Shaun Suisham and Chris Boswell will be competing for the kicker job during training camp, but the team may look to trade one of the kickers before the start of the regular season, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey had seven surgeries    Thu Jun 16, 09:05 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (leg) had six surgical procedures and a skin graft as a result of the broken left tibia he suffered in a 2015 preseason game. The initial surgical wound didn't heal properly resulting in a staph infection and a need for the subsequent surgeries.

Steelers | Shaun Suisham expected to kick soon    Wed Jun 15, 06:29 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers PK Shaun Suisham (knee) is expected to able to kick before the start of training camp, according to head coach Mike Tomlin.

Footballguys view: Mark it down--CHAMPIONSHIP. We like Suisham, by the way, but you shouldn't draft a kicker earlier than the last two rounds anyway.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell denies drug test rumor    Wed Jun 15, 01:08 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell addressed rumors that he missed a drug test, which would result in a failed test result. 'I haven't missed any drug tests, failed any drug tests. I am fine,' Bell said Tuesday, June 14.

Footballguys view: The rumor was generated by a radio host known for his wild rumors, so we wouldn't be shocked to see this thing was untrue. If you are a Bell owner, though, get Deangelo Williams. That is a necessary handcuff due to Bell's recent injury and suspension history.

Steelers | Jay Rome waived    Tue Jun 14, 07:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jay Rome was waived Tuesday, June 14.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger likes two-point tries    Tue Jun 14, 02:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said he would like to attempt two-point conversions after every touchdown this season. He and head coach Mike Tomlin have discussed the possibility.

Footballguys view: No team was better at 2-point conversions last year than the Steelers. They led the NFL in two-point attempts (11) and conversions (8). Last September, the Steelers became the first team to try a two-point conversion in the first quarter of a game in 17 years. We're not sure they'll go for two every time, but we won't be surprised to see them attempt even more 2-point tries this year. Make sure your league is scoring these conversions accordingly.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell may wait for new deal    Mon Jun 13, 01:57 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) is a candidate for a contract extension, but the Steelers may want to make sure he is completely recovered from his knee injury before signing him.

Footballguys view: It's a wise move for both sides. Bell wouldn't be able to get as much money if he struck a deal right now because of his injury history. The Steelers wouldn't feel comfortable signing him to an extension also because of the injuries in Bell's past. If Bell gets healthy, stays healthy and produces at a high level (like he can) then it's a better spot to negotiate from.

Steelers | Javon Hargrave signs rookie deal    Fri Jun 10, 02:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Javon Hargrave signed his rookie four-year deal Friday, June 10.

Footballguys view: Hargrave has good hustle from the edge, and the Steelers should be able to take advantage of that. He's not the tallest, measuring in at only 6'1" but at 309 pounds Hargrave can use strength and leverage to get after the quarterback.

Steelers | Kevin X. Anderson reverts to IR    Thu Jun 9, 06:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Kevin X. Anderson (undisclosed) reverted to the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, June 9, after being waived/injured Wednesday, June 8.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams will be used    Thu Jun 9, 12:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams will be used by offensive coordinator Todd Haley in 2016 despite the return of RB Le'Veon Bell from injury. 'I think the difference between last year and this year is that we got a big body of work from DeAngelo last year,' said Haley. 'We got to see him do a lot of things, and obviously he did a very good job for us. Knowing a lot more about him will maybe help give Le'Veon more rest when he needs it, although knowing Le'Veon he never wants to come off.'

Footballguys view: Well they said they would use him, not use him a lot. Williams was a surprise - and a fortunate one for the Steelers - in 2015 but unless Bell gets hurt, he won't repeat those numbers in 2016. He's a handcuff for Bell if you're nervous.

Steelers | Two Steelers revert to IR    Wed Jun 8, 06:05 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Tyriq McCord (undisclosed) reverted to the Reserve/Injured list after being waived/injured Tuesday, June 7.

Steelers | Sammie Coates performing well    Wed Jun 8, 05:34 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates is having a tremendous offseason, according to offensive coordinator Todd Haley.

Footballguys view: The team is going to be relying on Coates now that Martavis Bryant has been suspended for the year. Coates has a large wingspan and he's got the speed to take the top off the defense regularly. However, he's had hands of stone in the past and needs to prove that he can be reliable as a pass-catcher in 2016.

Steelers | Artie Burns signs    Wed Jun 8, 05:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Artie Burns signed his four-year rookie deal Wednesday, June 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Burns has a good size/speed combination, but he's a raw prospect who needs to play with better discipline. He can make field-flipping plays when he gets his hands on the ball, and the Steelers are going to look to him to upgrade the position as a starter this season.

Steelers | Sammie Coates in great shape    Tue May 31, 11:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates is expected to benefit significantly from the one-year suspension of WR Martavis Bryant. Coates has 'worked like crazy' this offseason and is in great shape and the coaching staff is tremendously confident in his abilities, beat writer Ed Bouchette said.

Footballguys view: We're not worried about Coates being out of shape....but we are going to be watching closely to see if he can play with better concentration. Coates is fast and physical, but he drops too many easy passes. He'll have to be better if he wants to earn a larger role with the Steelers in 2016. With Martavis Bryant suspended for the entire year, having Coates breakout would greatly benefit the Steelers passing game.

Steelers | Shaun Suisham aims for training camp    Tue May 31, 10:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers PK Shaun Suisham (knee) will not kick until training camp. The goal is for Suisham to compete for the starting job, but PK Chris Boswell might have a leg up in the competition due to his performance last season and his low-priced contract.

Steelers | Senquez Golson injured    Tue May 31, 06:25 PM

Steelers | Markus Wheaton confident he'll make impact    Tue May 31, 11:31 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton, who finished last year with 44 catches and five touchdowns, thinks he and QB Ben Roethlisberger developed enough chemistry to move forward and have a better season in 2016. 'We got on the same page as the season went on,' said Wheaton, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract. 'We learned how to communicate with each other, more so me communicating with him and giving him what he wants. I'm learning how to just be who I need to be when it comes to what Ben wants me to be.'

Footballguys view: Wheaton has had poor chemistry with Roethlisberger in the past. We'll have to see if the duo does a better job of building a rapport this offseason. Wheaton is a great route-runner, but his timing with his QB has been off. When he's playing at his best, Wheaton has fantasy relevance in the league's most high-powered offense. With Martavis Bryant suspended for the year, guys like Wheaton and Sammie Coates will be asked to do more.

Steelers | Antonio Brown torches rookie    Thu May 26, 09:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown beat CB Artie Burns for a pair of touchdowns in the first day of OTAs Thursday, May 26, and WR Darrius Heyward-Bey said he believes a 2,000-yard season is possible for Brown.

Footballguys view: Well, it doesn't really mean anything, especially when it's arguably the best receiver in the game beating a rookie. That said, we were unimpressed with the selection of Burns when it happened and this doesn't fill us with unicorns, rainbows and optimism. Brown is, of course, a WR1. We'll see if everyone is when they line up against Burns.

Steelers | Ladarius Green idle from ankle surgery    Wed May 25, 02:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (ankle) is out of organized team activities as he recovers from offseason ankle surgery. He doesn't have a firm timetable, but he's hopeful to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Green has always had the talent, but he's a player who has never truly played up to his potential. This ankle surgery is not a great start now that he's with a new team. The team should accelerate his learning curve if he's ready for training camp. With Green out, second-year pro Jesse James will get an opportunity to showcase his skill set.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger has high expectations    Wed May 25, 01:16 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said the offense will be looking to average 30 points per game in 2016 even though WR Martavis Bryant has been suspended for the entire season. 'It is still our goal,' Roethlisberger said. 'We were close last year, but we didn't get there.' The Steelers averaged 26.4 points per game in 2015 but the average increased to 28.9 points when Roethlisberger started or played at least a half.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners have high expectations for one of the league's best offenses. With Roethlisberger healthy, the team is capable of making a deep postseason run because they can move the ball against any defense.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey claims full health    Tue May 24, 08:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (leg) participated fully in organized team activities Tuesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: Getting Pouncey back at full strength will be a great asset for the Steelers offensive line. Pouncey said his injured leg is at 100% despite having multiple surgeries last year to repair a fractured fibula in his left leg.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell deflects injury proneness    Tue May 24, 02:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) doesn't believe each of his three injuries in each of his first three seasons in the NFL isn't indicative of him being injury prone. Bell said he's still going to be physical but protect himself at the same time.

Footballguys view: Looks like a duck, quacks like a duck and you have a duck. Bell may be correct, but we could write 2,000 words on how there may or may not be anything such as injury prone when it comes to pro athletes. One thing is certain; Bell needs to stay healthy and produce at a high level for the Steelers this year. If healthy, there's no question that he can do just that.

  Steelers | Le'Veon Bell full-go by camp?    Tue May 24, 02:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) said he will be 100% healthy by training camp. He has already participated in individual drills during organized team activities, including running and cutting, as he continues to recover from a torn medial collateral ligament.

Footballguys view: This the most positive report we've seen about Bell this offseason. The team has been wisely cautious with their star RB, but he's trying to recover from major knee surgery he had last November. We'll see if he's ready by the start of training camp. If not, the team could continue to limit him through camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell says he'll be ready    Tue May 24, 01:19 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee), who is recovering from surgery for a torn medial collateral ligament in his knee, said he plans on making a full return in time for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Bell has confidence that he'll be ready, but we're not so sure. He had major knee surgery back in November of last year, and his status for the start of training camp is up in the air. Bell himself may be ready, but the team may want to ease him into action later this year.

Steelers | Eli Rogers could make roster    Mon May 23, 09:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Eli Rogers is not guaranteed a spot on the final roster, but he could receive some work as a slot receiver. The team was high on Rogers before the 2015 season but suffered an injury during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Super deep dynasty players should take note here. Rogers is small (5'10" 180 pounds) but was a playmaker in college at Louisville and could be a decent slot WR in the pros. He is currently behind Markus Wheaton, Sammie Coates and Darrius Heyward-Bey on the depth chart.

Steelers | Pittsburgh may use two TEs in red zone    Mon May 23, 09:24 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TEs Ladarius Green and Jesse James may both be on the field at the same time in the red zone because of their height.

Footballguys view: That would make a lot of sense..especially since WR Martavis Bryant is suspended for the year. Green has a fine skill set, but he's never really played up to his full potential. The Steelers would like him to do that this year, but they also have the huge prospect (second-year TE Jesse James) to develop as well. James is raw at the position, but he's tall, has a large wingspan and can play 'above the rim' in the NFL.

Steelers | Sean Davis signs rookie deal    Fri May 20, 10:40 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers SS Sean Davis signed his four-year rookie deal Friday, May 20. Terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Davis is a multi-role defensive back who is being put at strong safety, but can also cover tight ends in man and play in space. The Steelers are trying to groom a few players with an intersection of abilities that they did not have on the roster before this draft.

Steelers | Antonio Brown's dancing can help    Wed May 18, 07:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown believes his experience on Dancing With the Stars can give him an advantage on the football field. '[Dance training] can definitely help me with football, change of direction, fluidity, constantly being ready for the next move,' Brown said. 'Dancing is all about the next move, being prepared for the next move in the midst of any move. It will definitely help with ankle strength, pushing off, change of direction.'

Footballguys view: There's actually a long tradition of football players using other non-traditional forms of training to improve their games, including ballet (Steelers HOFer Lynn Swann). So Brown's right, it could help with his game. Of course, his game is already pretty high level, and he'll be one of the top fantasy WR1 next year.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell unknown for OTAs    Wed May 11, 08:54 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's (knee) status for organized team activities in a few weeks is unknown, but he's expected to be limited if he's cleared. Training camp might be the best gauge used to determine his status as he's six months removed from right knee surgery.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are going to be wisely cautious with their star running back. As of now, there's no timetable for a full return. Bell might be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, but we'll have to wait and see how his recovery goes the rest of the offseason.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (lymphoma) has completed his chemotherapy regimen as he recovers from Hodgkin lymphoma. Conner was diagnosed in December with the Stage 2 case of the disease.

Footballguys view: Eff cancer. We're hopeful that Conner can make a speedy recovery after chemo.

Steelers | Travis Feeney a freakish athlete    Tue May 10, 10:51 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Travis Feeney (shoulder) starred at the NFL Scouting Combine, but he thinks that two shoulder surgeries in college scared teams off until the Steelers grabbed him in the sixth round. He ran a 4.5-second 40-yard dash and posted a 40-inch vertical leap. Feeney did this at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds. For context, those are better numbers than top-10 pick Chicago Bears LB Leonard Floyd. Feeney's original surgery on his left shoulder didn't fully correct the injury, but he said his shoulder feels stable and he's focused on strengthening the muscles around it this offseason. Feeney will need to add weight to play outside linebacker in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Feeney plays with little regard for his personal safety. That's awesome if your body can handle the punishment. Feeney has transformed his body from safety to linebacker, but he's got to stay healthy. The old saying goes, "your best ability is availability" and Feeney has the skill set of a 4-3 weak-side linebacker who could earn a spot on special teams as a rookie.

Steelers | Sean Davis could start immediately    Tue May 10, 01:18 AM

Pittsburgh SS Sean Davis projects as a strong safety, and the competition is wide open. He might start if he proves he is ready during training camp and the preseason.

Footballguys view: Davis loves to play close to the line of scrimmage and he arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence. He's bad in coverage and may have to come off the field in obvious passing situations.

Steelers | Three signed    Mon May 9, 01:19 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed WR Markus Tucker and RBs Brandon Brown-Dukes and Cameron Stingily to undisclosed deals Monday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Stingily is the player that we're curious about. He was just transitioned from linebacker to running back two years ago, and he runs with a punishing style. In only two years of playing the position, Stingily proved that he could dominate with a heavy workload. The Steelers may find a spot for him on their practice squad.

Pittsburgh Steelers seventh-round draft choices WR DeMarcus Ayers and LB Tyler Matakevich signed four-year contracts Thursday, May 5. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Ayers is a smaller/quicker receiver who could contribute as a return man if he makes the team.

Steelers | Three Steelers released    Thu May 5, 10:05 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Abou Toure, PK Ty Long and OT Mike X. Adams were released Thursday, May 5. Adams was released with the designation of a failed physical.

Footballguys view: Adams is the player to highlight here. He missed all of last season with a back injury, and that same injury may be the reason why he was released with a 'failed physical' designation. If healthy, Adams could at least be a swing tackle for some team out there.

Steelers | Decline option on Jarvis Jones    Mon May 2, 11:29 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers declined the 2017 fifth-year option on LB Jarvis Jones Monday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Potential is a dirty, filthy word as three-time Super Bowl champion Mark Schlereth (ESPN) always says. Jones had incredible potential as the 17th-overall pick in the 2013 NFL draft, but with only five career sacks he's been a huge disappointment. It's no surprise the team wouldn't add the option.

Free-agent QB Bruce Gradkowski (Steelers) will re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers Monday, May 2, and compete with QB Landry Jones for the backup job.

Footballguys view: That's a good move for the Steelers. Jones hasn't shown the development needed to get excited about his future in the pros, and Gradkowski is a solid reserve QB who won't cause you to lose sleep if he's a spot starter.

Steelers | Invite Jacob Huesman for tryout    Sun May 1, 02:27 PM

Free-agent QB Jacob Huesman (Tennessee-Chattanooga) has been invited to try out for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Heusman was a three-time Souther Conference Offensive Player of the Year. At 6'2" 220 pounds, Huesman is a fast runner who can gash defenses with his legs while trying to make a play with his arm. The Steelers have him as a camp arm only with Bruce Gradkowski returning and Landry Jones as the third-string guy behind Ben Roethlisberger.
