Steelers | Martavis Bryant has elbow infection    Sun Aug 2, 03:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant (elbow) will undergo a procedure for an elbow infection that will cause him to miss the Hall of Fame Game Sunday, Aug. 9, against the Minnesota Vikings. He is expected to be sidelined for seven to 10 days because of an infection caused by an ingrown hair.

Footballguys view: This just sounds painful. Bryant will be shut down for a week or so, but he's set to be ready for Week 3 of the preseason at the latest. The second-year pro makes for a nice WR3 with upside for fantasy owners.

Steelers | Pittsburgh acquires Brandon Boykin    Sat Aug 1, 08:09 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired CB Brandon Boykin from the Philadelphia Eagles Saturday, Aug. 1, in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Eagles could receive a fourth-round pick depending on Boykin's playing time, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Pro Football Focus rated Boykin as the Eagles' best cornerback in 2014, and he finished at no. 21 overall. He's one of the best young slot corners in the league, and he should immediately boost a poor Steelers secondary that ranked 27th against the pass in 2014.

  Steelers | Le'Veon Bell's suspension reduced    Tue Jul 28, 03:00 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's original three-game suspension has been reduced to a two-game suspension Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Steelers and fantasy owners here. While Bell is out, DeAngelo Williams will be the team's starter and a RB2 for fantasy. Bell should be a no-brainer top-3 pick in most every fantasy draft out there.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams unsure of workload    Tue Jul 28, 02:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams isn't sure how often he'll be used in training camp or in the first few games of the season yet. RB Le'Veon Bell's fate is tied to his three-game suspension that lies in limbo. Williams said he'll be ready for whatever he's asked to do.

Footballguys view: While Bell is suspended for two games, we'll see Williams as the lead back. He can easily be a RB2 for fantasy owners during that time.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell staying prepared    Tue Jul 28, 02:27 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell doesn't know yet how many games he'll be missing this season due to an impending suspension. Bell is focused on training camp and being a better teammate, though. He said he's going to give it his all every time he's on the practice field.

Footballguys view: Bell suggested he might be given a lighter load in training camp this time around.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell working to reduce ban    Tue Jul 28, 11:25 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's legal team and the NFL are negotiating to reduce Bell's three-game suspension to one or two games.

Footballguys view: There's no update on when Bell's suspension is going to be decided on. It sits at three games right now, but we could see a game or two dropped off. Even if Bell is out for three weeks, fantasy owners need to take him off the board in the first three picks of most any draft out there. The Steelers defense is going to struggle this year, and the offense will have to carry the load if this team wants to have success.

Steelers | Cameron Clear leaves practice    Mon Jul 27, 07:52 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Cameron Clear (illness) left practice early Monday, July 27, because of a heat-related illness.

Footballguys view: It's summer time, so expect teams to be incredibly careful with players hydration. Clear should be back in action soon.

Steelers | Markus Wheaton has solid offseason    Mon Jul 27, 07:02 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton is believed to have performed the best among the wide receivers during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Keep this in mind when considering Wheaton--or even Martavis Bryant. We should see Bryant as the WR2 opposite Antonio Brown this year, but Wheaton might cut into his targets. Wheaton was an excellent route-runner coming out of college, and he could work well as the team's slot receiver. Wheaton's 12.73 air yards per target was tied with Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green for 20th-best in the league--12th best for receivers with 50 or more catches. Keep him on your waiver-wire speed dial.

Steelers | Five players placed on PUP list    Mon Jul 27, 05:06 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Bruce Gradkowski (shoulder), OT Mike X. Adams (back), CB Senquez Golson (shoulder), DL Shawn Lemon (Achilles') and C Maurkice Pouncey (foot) were placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 25.

Footballguys view: Not a big deal here. Starting training camp on the PUP list means a player can be activated for practice anytime he's ready.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams busy as backup    Sun Jul 26, 08:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams said he 'absolutely' received enough work as the backup during the first day of training camp Sunday, July 26, and he expects to be ready to start Week 1 if RB Le'Veon Bell is suspended.

Footballguys view: Bell currently is on the books for a three-game suspension. That could be reduced, but we do not think the suspension will be completely eliminated. That means Williams is likely to start at least one game when the regular season kicks off. He's a capable veteran who could perform like a RB2 in PPR leagues while Bell is out.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell looks explosive    Sun Jul 26, 08:31 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell looked explosive during the first day of training camp Sunday, July 26, and he said he is in the best shape of his life.

Footballguys view: There's no word on Bell's three-game suspension right now. Even if he ends up having to serve all three games, fantasy owners should be taking him off the board within the first five picks of every fantasy draft out there.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger feels good    Sun Jul 26, 11:57 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said he is in great shape and that his arm feels great. He believes the offense can be even better than it was in 2014.

Footballguys view: Great news for Roethlisberger, the Steelers and fantasy owners here. It seems like OC Todd Haley has found the best ways to utilize Roethlisberger within his offense. Last year, Roethlisberger ranked as the 6th-best fantasy quarterback. This year, he should once again put in a top-10 season for fantasy owners.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey dealing with injury    Sun Jul 26, 09:35 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey (foot) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 25. Head coach Mike Tomlin said Pouncey is dealing with a minor injury.

Footballguys view: Not a big deal here. The PUP list in training camp means a player can be activated at any time. This is different from the PUP list to start the regular season when a player must miss six weeks of action. We expect Pouncey back in plenty of time for most of training camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Bruce Gradkowski on PUP list    Sun Jul 26, 09:34 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Bruce Gradkowski (shoulder) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Saturday, July 25.

Footballguys view: With Gradkowski on the PUP list to begin training camp, we could see guys like Landry Jones and Tajh Boyd get a few more reps. When his shoulder is ready, Gradkowski will be activated from the PUP list.

Steelers | Antonio Brown ends hold out speculation    Sat Jul 25, 08:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown ended speculation that he may hold out when he showed up for the first day of training camp Saturday, July 25. 'Hold outs never go well,' said Brown. 'Just look at history. It always ends badly. It wouldn't be the best decision. I make a lot of money. I pull up to camp in Rolls-Royces.'

Footballguys view: With a cap hit over $9.7 million this season, Brown is underpaid compared to his talent level--and there's no question he's outplayed his current contract. We could see the Steelers renegotiate his deal at some point in the future, but there's no holdout for Brown this year.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant should up snap count    Sat Jul 25, 08:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant played an average of just 29% of offensive snaps in 2014, but he is expected to serve as the primary No. 2 receiver on the outside in 2015 with WR Markus Wheaton moving to more of a slot role.

Footballguys view: We're excited to see what Bryant can do after splashing onto the scene last year as a part-time player. As a rookie, Bryant didn't get going until Week 7 but he made an impact when he was on the field. His yards per catch (21.1) ranked 1st in the NFL along with his longest catch (94 yards) also ranking at the top in the league. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL. He's a WR3 with upside for fantasy owners this year.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams being challenged    Sat Jul 25, 08:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams is not receiving any first-team reps despite RB Le'Veon Bell facing a three-game suspension, head coach Mike Tomlin said. Tomlin also said he is challenging Williams in ways that are uncomfortable for a 10-year veteran.

Footballguys view: Williams is still clearly the best running back on the roster after Bell, and he'll get at least enough touches to be flexworthy while Bell is out. He is usually going in the double-digit rounds, so the price for Bell owners to cover his lost starts is relatively cheap. Williams looked like he still had some game left when he wasn't banged up last year.

  Steelers | Le'Veon Bell not 100% yet    Sat Jul 25, 07:27 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) said his right knee isn't 100% yet, but he said it's close.

Footballguys view: It's certainly not comforting that his knee is not 100% seven months after the injury, which was not surgically repaired. Bell doesn't seem hobbled in any videos of his work and he's not on the PUP, so we would say to not worry unless it looks like he's going to miss the preseason. This deserves monitoring, but it hasn't risen to the level of changing Bell's spot in your rankings... yet.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell appeal update    Sat Jul 25, 03:25 PM

Updating a previous report, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he doesn't even have a hearing date yet for an appeal on his three-game suspension.

Footballguys view: Nothing like the NFL working through things quickly. Bell's suspension could be dropped to only a game or two. However, even if his suspension stays at three games, fantasy owners should be taking Bell off the board within the first five picks of every draft out there.

Steelers | Mike Tomlin agrees to extension    Thu Jul 23, 10:20 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin agreed to an extension Thursday, July 23, through the 2018 season.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have had three head coaches in the last 40-plus years. That's not a typo. It's no shock that Tomlin would get extended. He's one of the most successful and well-respected coaches in the league, and Tomlin could stay with the Steelers as long as he wants.

Steelers | LeVeon Bell appeal not heard yet    Tue Jul 21, 04:29 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's supposed appeal for his three-game suspension has not been brought to the attention of commissioner Roger Goodell. Bell was suspended for possession of marijuana and driving under the influence.

Footballguys view: We have a feeling that Bell could see his sentence reduced by a game or two. Fantasy owners should still be taking Bell in the first five picks on any fantasy draft--even if his suspension stands at three games.

Steelers | Two could compete for NT job    Sun Jul 19, 09:48 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Daniel McCullers could push DT Steve McLendon for the starting nose tackle job during training camp.

Footballguys view: McLendon has started at nose tackle for the Steelers over the last two years. A sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in the 2014 NFL draft, we'll see if McCullers can challenge Mclendon for the starting job in training camp and the preseason.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant can stretch the field    Sat Jul 18, 09:32 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant had eight touchdown catches and five catches of 40-plus yards in 10 games as a rookie.

Footballguys view: His yards per catch ranked 1st in the NFL along with his longest catch (94 yards) also ranking at the top in the league. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL, and that number highlights precisely how he can attack defenses. He's a deep ball receiver with a knack for the big play and a nose for the end zone. Fantasy owners should consider him a high-end WR3 with upside in 2015.

Steelers | DeAngelo Williams slims down    Thu Jul 16, 03:18 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB DeAngelo Williams has lost some weight this offseason since head coach Mike Tomlin asked Williams to report to training camp at 220 pounds or less. Williams said he is currently at the target weight after working with a nutritionist this offseason.

Footballguys view: We have yet to hear about a final suspension for Le'Veon Bell. Whether it's three games or one game, Williams will be filling in for Bell while he's out. Williams gets a fresh start with the Steelers this year, and while starting for a suspended Bell he could put up RB2/flex numbers.

Steelers | PIT has two candidates for No. 2 WR job    Wed Jun 24, 01:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WRs Markus Wheaton and Martavis Bryant are expected to compete for the No. 2 wide receiver job during training camp. Both players performed well during offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: This competition could go either way. Bryant is a big deep target with a large wingspan and leaping ability to win at the point of the catch. Wheaton is a fantastic route-runner who can get open on underneath routes. No matter who wins, we expect Bryant to be the more fantasy relevant player.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant may be red zone target    Wed Jun 24, 01:29 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant could be targeted in the red zone more often this season since he is 6-foot-4. Bryant had four receptions in the red zone last season and all of the catches were for touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Bryant "may be red-zone target" this year? Ha! He's CERTAINLY going to be targeted in the red zone as much as possible. His yards per catch (21.1) ranked 1st in the NFL along with his longest catch (94 yards) also ranking at the top in the league. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL. He's a deep target with the ability to play above the rim near pay dirt. Fantasy owners are taking him off the board at WR25 (5.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Sammie Coates wants to be all-around WR    Tue Jun 23, 07:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates said he wants to show he can be a multi-dimensional wide receiver and not just a deep threat. 'I'm just trying to do everything I can to showcase I'm an all-around guy who can play anywhere,' Coates said.

Footballguys view: Big, fast and raw are the best ways to describe Coates. The rookie from Auburn has tremendous natural talent, athleticism and body control. He also has a history of dropping too many passes. In college, Coates had a drop rate of 19.1 percent--a terrible stat which shows his lack of focus. He's inconsistent in his play speed and needs a lot of work before he's an effective pro. Coates has ability (and lots of it)....he just needs to refine and sharpen his game.

Steelers | Markus Wheaton learning slot role    Fri Jun 19, 02:49 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton said the slot position is not out of his comfort zone, but there are things he needs to learn that are different from playing on the outside.

Footballguys view: Wheaton said he's seeing a lot of the same defensive reads in the slot that he did on the outside. Getting him in the slot gives Wheaton a clean release off the line of scrimmage. He'll get into his routes quicker, and we know that he's been a sharp route-runner since his days in college at Oregon State.

Steelers | No date for Le'Veon Bell's appeal    Wed Jun 17, 01:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said he has not had the appeal of his three-game suspension heard at this point and does not know when the appeal will be scheduled.

Footballguys view: There's no set timetable right now, but Bell's lawyers could be dragging this out so the young running back has more time to prove that he's staying out of trouble. There's a chance his suspension gets reduced from three games to two games instead. Stay tuned...and oh yeah, draft Bell as you normally would. He should be coming off the board within the first three picks of every draft out there.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger embracing leadership    Tue Jun 16, 08:56 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is embracing a leadership role this offseason. 'It's fun because I can tell the guys what I want on the field and they are going to listen because we all want to be the best we can be and help each other win,' Roethlisberger said. 'I am just happy to have the coach's blessing to be able to do that and not stepping on anybody's toes.' At 33 years old, Roethlisberger is the second-oldest player on the Steelers' roster, behind only LB James Harrison.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger is still near the top of his game, and the Steelers have incredible weapons on offense around him. He may not pass for over 4,900 yards like he did last year, but going over 4,500 sounds reasonable. We could also see Roethlisberger tossing 30-plus touchdowns in 2015. DFS players should look to Roethlisberger over the first three weeks of the season while RB Le'Veon Bell is suspended.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant gaining confidence    Sun Jun 14, 07:57 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has focused on improving his game and mastering the flanker position this offseason, which has shown in his on-field confidence, according to Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley. QB Ben Roethlisberger has gained trust in Bryant, per Steelers WR Darrius Heyward-Bey. Bryant turned heads during organized team activities during the week and can play both inside and outside.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners take note here. Bryant's 18.04 air yards per target ranked 1st in the NFL, and that number highlights precisely how he can attack defenses. He's a deep threat who can get vertical in a hurry. Bryant can score touchdowns with ease, making 8-10 touchdowns well within his range this year.

Steelers | Big Ben loves supporting cast    Thu Jun 11, 12:14 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is excited about the team's offense heading into the 2015 season, which he feels might be the best supporting cast of his career. "I hate to yes or no, because I don't want to offend anybody else that's been here," Roethlisberger said Wednesday, June 10. "But you look at stats from the NFL, we had the No. 1 wide receiver and the No. 1 overall back. Kind of hard to argue with those numbers."

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should be excited by this offense too--especially when Le'Veon Bell comes back from his three-game suspension. Roethlisberger is a QB1 with the upside to finish as a top-5 fantasy quarterback. Bell is a RB1 you should consider at the top of your draft--even with the suspension. Antonio Brown is a WR1 and a virtual lock to finish the season as a top-5 fantasy season.

Steelers | Dri Archer likely to return kicks    Sun Jun 7, 11:01 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Dri Archer is in line to return kicks in 2015 after being stripped of the duty at the end of last season.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Archer can make a larger difference this year. We're not expecting him to do much as a runner or receiver for the Steelers. However, he could be a decent return man if he uses his speed and quickness properly in 2015.

Steelers | Steve McLendon had offseason surgery    Sun Jun 7, 10:21 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Steve McLendon said he underwent shoulder surgery earlier this offseason but has completely recovered from the surgery. McLendon said he regained strength in his shoulder and has full range of motion.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Steelers here. McLendon was basically playing with one arm when the Steelers lost to the Ravens in the playoffs last year. This shoulder injury forced McLendon to miss four games in October and November, but he returned to play in the last four games of the regular season and for 26 snaps in the playoff game. McLendon is entering the final year of his contract, and he's looking to impress so he can land a third deal with the Steelers.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant adds weight    Sun Jun 7, 09:41 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has been working out three times per day this offseason and currently weighs 225 pounds, which is 10 pounds more than he weighed during his rookie season. 'Everyone gets bigger and better every year,' Bryant said. 'I wanted to make sure I got better. I didn't want to slack off or become complacent. I had some things I wanted to get done in the offseason, so I went to work.'

Footballguys view: Bryant became a fantasy darling last year because of his ability to make plays in the end zone. His penchant for hauling in long touchdowns make him a great player to consider each week in DFS. Bryant's 21.1 yards per reception ranked first in the NFL last year.

Steelers | Antonio Brown adds muscle    Thu Jun 4, 05:18 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has added five pounds of muscle this offseason because he wants to increase his durability. Brown said training, rest and nutrition have helped to contribute to his success.

Footballguys view: Brown is arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL. He's dangerous and exciting to watch every time he touches the ball. Last year, Brown ran a league-high 631 routes, was targeted 180 times (2nd-most), caught 129 passes (1st) for 1,698 receiving yards (1st), 85 first downs (1st) and 13 receiving touchdowns (2nd). Brown has amazing chemistry with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and he can attack a defense on short or long routes.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger sits out    Thu Jun 4, 01:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger did not participate in organized team activities Thursday, June 4, because he received a day off.

Footballguys view: Nothing particularly worrisome about a veteran getting a day of rest. Roethlisberger has an ADP of 6.11, and ranks as a solid QB1 in most leagues.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell close to full strength    Tue May 26, 09:47 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) said his knee is close to 100% healed from the injury he suffered during the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Bell is going to be serving a three-game suspension to start the season. He'll certainly be 100 percent healthy by that time. Fantasy owners are not worried about the knee or the suspension as Bell is still going off the board at RB3 (1.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Antonio Brown not focused on contract    Tue May 26, 05:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown did not answer questions on the first day of organized team activities regarding a possible new deal.

Footballguys view: At this time, Brown doesn't sound like a guy who is going to hold out for a new contract. He's seriously underpaid at his current salary of $9.7 million for 2015. Yes, that number puts him in the top 10 for wide receivers but Brown should easily be making top-5 money. It doesn't look like a holdout is coming for Brown even though he deserves a pay raise.

Steelers | L'Damian Washington waived    Tue May 19, 05:15 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR L'Damian Washington (undisclosed) was waived/injured Tuesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: Washington was just receiver depth for the Steelers, and they had to make room for the addition of rookie CFA Devin Gardner.

Steelers | Claim Devin Gardner    Tue May 19, 04:39 PM

Free-agent WR Devin Gardner (Patriots) was claimed by the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, May 19.

Footballguys view: We're always intrigued by depth receivers on the Steelers roster as they have good eye for talent at the position. Gardner is a big target (6'4" 215 pounds) but he's incredibly raw as a receiver. The converted quarterback knows how to find the soft spots in a zone, but he needs to develop better "my ball" mentality when passes are contested. He's also just a bad route-runner at this time, but that may improve with more reps at the position.

Steelers | Sammie Coates signs deal    Fri May 15, 03:59 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates signed a four-year deal with the team Friday, May 15. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Coates will start out as a role player, but he could team up with Martavis Bryant to give the Steelers twin rockets outside, stretching defenses to their limit. He's got the speed and thick, long build, but Coates needs to be more consistent catching the ball and improve his craft to tap into his vast potential. He'll be a boom/bust pro.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell fine with ban    Thu May 14, 07:22 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell said Thursday, May 14, that he didn't have a problem with his three-game suspension for being charged with possession of marijuana and driving under the influence. 'I made a mistake,' Bell said. 'I'm going to just have to do my time, whatever the final decision may be. Get past it, and get ready for next season and continuing to be the great football player I know I can be.'

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see how the Steelers deal with his absence and whether Deangelo Williams can be productive, as he just hadn't been for the Carolina Panthers in some time. Bell remains a high ADP choice, close to the top of the first round, while Williams is only at an ADP of 11.09, even with those first three games.

Steelers | Bud Dupree's terms    Thu May 14, 06:10 PM

Updating a previous story, Pittsburgh Steelers LB Bud Dupree's rookie contract is for four years and $9.22 million, with a $4.96 million signing bonus. The Steelers have a team option for the fifth year.

Footballguys view: Dupree fills the role of pass rusher on a team which needs them. It's added bonus that Dupree adds youth to what they have on the roster already.

Steelers | Sign Bud Dupree    Thu May 14, 05:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB Bud Dupree signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 14. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: The Steelers were looking for some linebacker help and they got it in a big way with the talented Dupree. This defense is in transition a little due to age, but adding Dupree and a few other key players in the draft was a good start.

Steelers | Jesse James signed    Thu May 14, 12:03 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James signed a four-year contract with the team Thursday, May 14. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: James, a fifth-round pick by the Steelers this year, has great size at 6'7" 260 pounds. His length makes him a great target near pay dirt as he can high-point passes away from defenders. James is not a seam-ripper, but he does have decent straight-line speed. He's an in-line tight end the team will groom and develop.
