Steelers | Le'Veon Bell 50-50 to sign deal    Tue Jun 27, 10:50 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell signing a long-term deal could go either way, according to ESPN insider Adam Schefter. Both sides have motivation to get it done, but there's no deal in sight for now.

Footballguys view: If no agreement is done, Bell will make $12 million on the franchise tag in 2017. DeMarco Murray (Titans) makes the second-most money behind Bell for a running back with a pricetag of $6.25 million in 2017 per Spotrac.com. Both sides have admitted it will take time and plenty of work but they're striving to make something happen. With less than a month before the July 17th deadline there seems to be a bit more positive vibe around Bell's situation compared to other franchise-tagged players.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell plays ball    Mon Jun 26, 09:14 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) posted a video of him playing basketball over the weekend after having core surgery in the offseason.

Footballguys view: It looks like Bell is at or near full strength. Bell is hoping for a new long-term contract from the Steelers as he was slapped with the franchise tag earlier this offseason. The two sides have until July 17th to work out a deal that could make him the highest paid running back in the league.

Steelers | Daniel McCullers slimming down    Sat Jun 24, 10:35 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DT Daniel McCullers has lost eight pounds this offseason and intends to drop 10 more pounds before reporting to training camp. He was listed at 352 pounds last season.

Steelers | L.T. Walton practices with starters    Sat Jun 24, 10:24 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers DE L.T. Walton received first-team reps at defensive tackle during organized team activities and minicamp, due to an undisclosed injury to DT Javon Hargrave.

Steelers | Xavier Grimble a potential starter?    Fri Jun 23, 09:57 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Xavier Grimble could push TE Jesse James for the starting job if he can become consistent catching the football, according to Bob Labriola of Steelers.com.

Footballguys view: Grimble is considered a darkhorse candidate to be the starter for the Steelers. He'll have to beat out Jesse James for that top spot, but there's not a lot of fantasy value here. The Steelers will fill the air with footballs in the passing game, but a majority of targets are bound for guys like WR Antonio Brown, WR Martavis Bryant and RB Le'Veon Bell.

Steelers | Knile Davis working on special teams    Fri Jun 23, 06:41 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Knile Davis worked on most of the special teams units during offseason workouts and was told he will compete for the kick returner job. He also received a solid amount of snaps at running back during the workouts since RB Le'Veon Bell was not present and RB James Conner (hamstring) was dealing with an injury.

Footballguys view: Davis is competing to be the third running back in Pittsburgh. He will need to stand out on special teams if he wants to get a spot on the roster.

Steelers | Sammie Coates healing up    Thu Jun 22, 11:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (groin) said he has spent the last month making sure his 'body is back to normal' following offseason groin surgery.

Footballguys view: Coates is going to compete with rookie JuJu Smith-Schuster for the no3 wide receiver position in Pittsburgh behind Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. We like the rookie (Smith-Schuster) more in this battle. Coates is fast and can get downfield in the blink of an eye, but he's had problems with drops since he started catching (or dropping) footballs and he's been banged up. Dynasty owners should be able to score him on the cheap if you believe he'll ever play up to his potential.

Steelers | Xavier Grimble could 'make a run' at starting job    Thu Jun 22, 08:04 PM

Bob Labriola, of Steelers.com, believes Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Xavier Grimble could 'make a run' at the starting job in training camp this year. While Grimble has flashed the ability to be special, Labriola cautions that the young tight end must get more consistent if he's going to beat out Jesse James for the top spot on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: With all the weapons in Pittsburgh, we don't expect big production from the tight end position. Both players have intriguing upside but unless looking to take a flier on someone, this isn't a team we'd go to for a fantasy tight end.

Steelers | Sammie Coates 'getting there' with health    Thu Jun 22, 07:44 PM

Jeremy Fowler, of ESPN.com, reports Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates has feverishly worked to get his body back in shape for training camp after offseason groin surgery. "I'm getting there. It's a process," Coates said. "That's what this process is for, to get your body back so you can compete during camp."

Footballguys view: With Martavis Bryant and JuJu Smith-Schuster fighting for targets behind Antonio Brown, it seems like Coates is going to have a hard time finding passes thrown his way.

Steelers | Maurkice Pouncey close to retirement?    Wed Jun 21, 02:12 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers C Maurkice Pouncey has said in the past that he will retire when QB Ben Roethlisberger retires because he does not want to work with a new quarterback but indicated he may be willing to stay after Roethlisberger leaves. 'You get so used to playing with a great quarterback like that. For it to switch up, maybe try it out for one year of experience or two to see how things go, but man, it would be real hard,' Pouncey said.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell extension iffy before deadline?    Tue Jun 20, 04:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell has a 50% chance of agreeing to a long-term extension before the July 17 deadline, in the opinion of Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. La Canfora cites Bell's history of injuries and suspensions as logical reasons to take a year-by-year approach with Bell. Plus, Bell counts $12 million against the Steelers' salary cap.

Footballguys view: It's going to happen. The Steelers don't want him to walk, because he will last half a minute on the market. Yes, there is danger because of those suspensions and injuries but you can only string him along for so long before he takes his talents elsewhere, unless you just tag him every season, which gets cost-prohibitive. We expect Bell to be both healthy and not suspended, making him a shoe-in for one of the top running back spots in fantasy again this season.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger praises Martavis Bryant    Tue Jun 20, 01:17 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger said WR Martavis Bryant 'looks like a stud, as usual' when asked how the returning wide-out is fitting back in with the team.

Footballguys view: It sounds like Bryant is back to dominating on the football field. He should be able to carry that momentum from minicamp over to training camp and from training camp to the preseason. Once we see him back in game action, we'll feel better about Bryant's potential. In this high-powered passing attack, Bryant has a chance to outperform his current ADP of WR27 (5.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | James Conner still bothered by injury    Mon Jun 19, 08:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (hamstring) said he was not able to do much during minicamp because he is still dealing with a hamstring injury he suffered during rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Conner is penciled in to be the primary backup to Le'Veon Bell. He's certainly a player fantasy owners should handcuff to Bell if you've got the space on your bench. His current ADP is RB63 (14.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Coach happy with T.J. Watt    Mon Jun 19, 08:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he is happy with how LB T.J. Watt is picking up the defensive scheme.

Footballguys view: Watt plays like his hair is on fire. He's got a high-revving motor and has been favorably compared to Clay Matthews (Packers). Watt should work into the mix this year as a part-time pass-rusher for the Steelers.

  Steelers | Le'Veon Bell's workload being discussed     Thu Jun 15, 11:54 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's workload has been a topic of conversation for the coaching staff, according to offensive coordinator Todd Haley. 'He's a guy who gets stronger every game,' Haley said. 'He does not want to come out of the game. He's a year older. We've got to make sure we cover all of that, which we will and do as a staff.'

Footballguys view: Bell is a superstar who can attack a defense in multiple ways. The team wants to keep him fresh in 2017 and that's why we could see rookie RB James Conner mixed in to give Bell a breather from time to time.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster impressing    Sun Jun 11, 12:08 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster has been showing why he was drafted so high during OTAs, according to LB Ryan Shazier.

Footballguys view: The rookie from USC is competing for the WR3 job in Pittsburgh behind Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant. Smith-Schuster plays a physical game and has a skill set reminiscent of a young Anquan Boldin. His main competition for a role on offense is Sammie Coates...and with Coates history of inconsistent play we'd put our money on the rookie winning that spot.

Steelers | Alejandro Villanueva hopes for contract    Fri Jun 9, 05:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers exclusive rights free-agent OT Alejandro Villanueva said he hopes to receive a long-term contract but will allow his agent and the team work on a deal. He did not say if he will be present for the mandatory minicamp next week.

Footballguys view: Team insiders believe the two sides will get something done. Villanueva has been present at voluntary OTAs and he signed a waiver to practice with the team without a contract. Missing mandatory work after showing up for voluntary practice would not make any sense. He'll be there, and the Steelers need to make this happen.

Steelers | Knile Davis enjoying extra reps    Sun Jun 4, 08:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Knile Davis has been seeing most of the reps with the first-team during OTAs with RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) and RB James Conner (groin) sidelined, and Davis said the heavy workload is helping him pick up the offense.

Footballguys view: Davis was signed to be a body for camp, but he's getting more work with injuries above him on the depth chart. He spent time with three teams in 2016, including two stints with the Chiefs. Davis has a chance to latch on with the Steelers as they don't have much talent behind Bell and Conner.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant to work on chemistry    Wed May 31, 08:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant said he knows that it will take time for him to rebuild chemistry with QB Ben Roethlisberger and become more comfortable with the plays.

Footballguys view: It's only a matter of time before Bryant is back on the same page as his quarterback. Bryant has WR2 upside and his big play ability means he could swing your fantasy matchup any week. He's going off the board at WR27 (5.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell may miss minicamp    Wed May 31, 04:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell could skip the rest of organized team activities and the team's minicamp because he still has not signed his franchise tender, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to watch this situation closely. Bell had surgery to repair a core muscle back in March, so there's no need to rush him back. We'll see if the Steelers give Bell the long-term contract he wants before the July 15th deadline. Bell and the team has had some discussions about a long-term deal, but neither side seems worried about the situation at this point.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster has worked in slot    Tue May 30, 02:40 PM

As expected, Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster has been practicing in the slot at organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The rookie from USC reminds many in the draftnik community of Anquan Boldin because of his aggression at the catch point and run-after-the-catch ability. He should be the leading candidate to play in the slot with Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant lining up outside.

Steelers | T.J. Watt seeing time with starters    Sat May 27, 10:35 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers LB T.J. Watt has been seeing some reps at right outside linebacker with the first-team defense during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Watt can make plays as a part-time pass rusher for the Steelers. A first-round pick out of Wisconsin this year, Watt reminds many in the scouting community of Clay Matthews (Packers). A converted tight end, Watt has huge hands (11 inches) and can make plays in coverage.

Steelers | Alejandro Villanueva may walk away?    Sat May 27, 04:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers exclusive rights free-agent OT Alejandro Villanueva could consider walking away from football if he does not receive a long-term contract from the Steelers, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Villeanueva has an interesting situation. He's an ERFA, so Villanueva can sign a tender worth around $615,000. That's significantly less than starting left tackles make, but the Steelers own his rights for two years as Villanueva is set to be a restricted free agent in 2018. We'll see if the two sides can come together on an extension that properly compensates the veteran left tackle.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant works with first-team    Sat May 27, 12:27 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant worked with the first-team offense during OTAs and 'looked great on the field while showing a more mature demeanor,' according to a team source.

Footballguys view: Most fully expect Bryant to win the starting job opposite Antonio Brown in 2017. Coming back from his suspension, Bryant will have to get back into football shape and stay clean in order to play up to his potential this year. He's a boom/bust fantasy propect this year, and Byrant is getting drafted at WR26 (5.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Steelers | James Conner nursing sore hamstring    Thu May 25, 10:42 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB James Conner (hamstring) has not been participating in OTAs because of a pulled hamstring.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly. The rookie from PITT is a powerful runner who can get stronger as the game goes on. The Steelers will ease him back into action when he's ready, and we expect Conner to win the backup job behind Le'Veon Bell in 2017.

Steelers | Joshua Dobbs to be backup QB?    Thu May 25, 10:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs is likely to beat out QB Landry Jones for the backup quarterback job, according to former NFL executive Mark Dominik.

Footballguys view: We'd agree with that sentiment. The rookie from Tennessee is smart, athletic and can make any throw required. He does need a lot of work before he's ready to start. Dobbs tends to lock onto bad reads and doesn't adjust after the snap. He'll stare down his targets and lead defenders right into the throwing lane. Dobbs has great deep accuracy but could use better pass placement on short/intermediate routes. Even with all this work needed, Dobbs is likely better than Jones almost from day one.

Steelers | Stephon Tuitt not practicing at OTAs    Wed May 24, 01:06 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers DE Stephon Tuitt (hand) underwent offseason hand surgery and is not practicing in OTAs, but the injury is not likely to affect him in the regular-season, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Footballguys view: No hurries, no worries here. Tuitt is likely to be ready for the start of training camp. An ascending talent, Tuitt is entering the last year of his rookie contract. A second-round pick in the 2014 NFL draft, the Steelers might want to lock up Tuitt with an extension before he hits the open market.

Steelers | Senquez Golson practicing    Wed May 24, 01:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Senquez Golson has not played since he was drafted in the second round in 2015 due to shoulder and foot injuries, but he is back at practice with the team and practicing as a slot corner.

Footballguys view: Some in the scouting community thought Golson had Pro Bowl upside as a slot corner when he came out of Ole Miss in 2015. His future production level is a huge mystery as injuries have suffocated his pro career. Golson says he's fully healthy, and it will be interesting to see what kind of player he becomes on Sundays.

Steelers | Sean Davis had surgery    Tue May 23, 07:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers SS Sean Davis (shoulder) underwent surgery on his shoulder this offseason, according to a sources, but he anticipates being fully healthy for training camp.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Maryland in 2016, Davis played over 700 snaps as a rookie -- primarily at strong safety for the Steelers. They'll let his shoulder get healthy before getting Davis back out there.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant expected to practice    Mon May 22, 06:08 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant is expected to be on the field for organized team activities Tuesday, May 22.

Footballguys view: Bryant is expected to be the team's starter opposite Antonio Brown. He'll need to work himself back into football shape this offseason after missing all of 2016 due to suspension.

Steelers | Joshua Dobbs signs contract    Mon May 22, 04:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Joshua Dobbs signed his four-year rookie contract Monday, May 22. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Dobbs is going to be groomed as a potential quarterback of the future for the Steelers. He's incredibly bright, athletic enough to keep plays alive with his feet and has the arm to make every throw in the NFL. However, Dobbs needs to do a better job with making quick decisions and accurate passes. Too often in college at Tennessee, Dobbs would lock onto his predetermined read before the snap and fail to adjust as defenses disguised coverages.

Steelers | Xavier Grimble primed for more playing time?    Sat May 20, 06:06 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Xavier Grimble played more than twice as many snaps per game with Ladarius Green out than in last season. Prior to breaking his ribs in the second half of last season, Grimble averaged 19.9 snaps per contest.

Footballguys view: Writers are only left to speculate who is going to be the lead tight end for the Steelers now that Ladarius Green has been released. Grimble is not a plus-athlete, but his big body (6'4" 261 pounds) helps him box out smaller defenders. He'll compete with Jesse James (the likely favorite) for the starting tight end job in 2017.

Steelers | Jesse James to be No. 1 tight end    Thu May 18, 10:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Jesse James will be the 'main guy' at the tight end position this year, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan.

Footballguys view: At 6'7" 261 pounds, James can be a red-zone force...if not more...for the Steelers in 2017. He caught 39 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns last year, but in the postseason James caught 10 passes for 131 yards in the Divisional Round and AFC Championship Game. He moves into the top spot with the release of Ladarius Green.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster to have slot role?    Thu May 18, 05:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie WR JuJu Smith-Schuster has the size and ability to serve as a successful slot receiver if that's where the Steelers want him to play, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster has some great hands and catch radius, and looks like he has the makings of a solid possession receiver. Scouts regularly compared Smith-Schuster to Anquan Boldin because of his aggression at the catch point. That slot WR role could give him more production than expected with the newly reinstated Martavis Bryant, Eli Rogers and Darrius Heyward-Bay around fighting for the scraps Antonio Brown leaves behind.

Steelers | Pittsburgh signs Terrell Watson    Thu May 18, 03:27 PM

Free-agent RB Terrell Watson (Eagles) signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers Thursday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Watson is a big running back who looks like he should run with power. He also has a history of fumbling problems, and he runs too upright between the tackles. Watson is likely just a camp body.

Steelers | Ladarius Green released    Thu May 18, 03:19 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green was released Thursday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Not a shock given his concussion and ankle issues that held him to only six games last year. Green has always had the potential to do more, but he's been mostly a tease for fantasy owners. His future in the NFL may be coming to a close due to health problems. It will be interesting to see who the Steelers bring in to compete with Jesse James.

Steelers | Pittsburgh makes roster moves    Wed May 17, 06:35 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed undrafted free-agent QB Bart Houston (Wisconsin) and free-agent WR Canaan Severin (Steelers) Wednesday, May 17. The team also waived QB Nick Schuessler and LB Akil Blount.

Footballguys view: Houston played in 26 games for the Badgers and ended his career completing 125-for-192 passes (65.1 percent) for 1,540 yards and nine touchdowns. He's a high-percentage quarterback with the arm strength to make every throw in the NFL. Severin was added last year as an undrafted free agent out of Virginia. He's got the size (6'2" 215 pounds) and can make plays after the catch. Severin is not a speedy player and does struggle with separation. Both players are only worth monitoring in the deepest of deep dynasty leagues.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster signs contract    Wed May 17, 04:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers second-round draft choice WR JuJu Smith-Schuster signed his four-year contract with the Steelers Wednesday, May 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster may be the favorite to win the Steelers no.3 job at wide receiver (with Antonio Brown and Martavis Bryant at no.1 and no.2 of course). The rookie from USC reminds some in the scouting community of Anquan Boldin because of his size, strength at the catch point and his run-after-the-catch ability. He'll compete with Sammie Coates for the third spot on the depth chart.

Steelers | JuJu Smith-Schuster staying focused    Sun May 14, 10:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR JuJu Smith-Schuster said he wants to earn a starting role but is currently focused on learning learning the playbook and running the proper routes.

Footballguys view: Smith-Schuster is hyper competitive and could very well be a high-volume possession receiver for the Steelers. That makes him a rookie WR to monitor closely in PPR leagues. The USC product has drawn comparisons to Anquan Boldin because of his size and ability to rip contested passes away from defenders.

Steelers | Pittsburgh signs Phazahn Odom    Sun May 14, 06:03 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed undrafted free-agent TE Phazahn Odom (Fordham) Sunday, May 14, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Odom was a tryout player with the Steelers after the draft, and he did enough to earn a deal with the team. He's got interesting size at 6'8" and 250 pounds, and Odom has the wingspan to gather in difficult passes. A former basketball star, Odom is clearly athletic but he also doesn't mind the physical side (blocking) of the game.

Steelers | Alejandro Villanueva not signed yet    Sun May 14, 04:16 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers exclusive rights free-agent OT Alejandro Villanueva still has not signed his tender offer, and head coach Mike Tomlin said he does not know if Villanueva will report for organized team activities.

Footballguys view: As an ERFA, Villanueva doesn't have much leverage. The Steelers should be working on a new long-term extension for the former Army Ranger who has performed well after winning the starting left tackle job last year. We'll see if Villanueva stays away when workouts become mandatory.
