Steelers | PIT not expected to re-sign Markus Wheaton    Tue Feb 21, 09:34 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Markus Wheaton is not expected to be back with the team next season, 'unless he has no other decent offers and returns for minimum salary,' according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Wheaton has been a disappointment during his pro career with the Steelers. Injuries and inconsistencies have plagued his game. In 2016, Wheaton made it through only three games hauling in four catches for 51 yards and one touchdown.

Steelers | William Gay could be on bubble    Sun Feb 19, 02:27 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB William Gay could be released this offseason since he is scheduled to count $2.63 million in 2017 and is 32 years old.

Footballguys view: He served as the team's nickel back this past season, but the team may want to look for an upgrade at the position.

Steelers | Pittsburgh unsure about Senquez Golson    Sun Feb 19, 02:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert indicated the team is not sure if they will be able to count on CB Senquez Golson (shoulder, foot) in 2017 since he has missed his first two seasons because of injury.

Footballguys view: Colbert said he is not sure if Golson lost any speed because of the foot injury he dealt with during his rookie season. The Steelers will not hesitate to select a cornerback in the 2017 NFL draft even if Golson is healthy.

Steelers | Pittsburgh expects Ladarius Green back    Fri Feb 17, 10:39 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green (concussion) is expected to be ready for the start of spring practice, according to general manager Kevin Colbert.

Footballguys view: Green's situation is one to watch, and one to be excited about if he's healthy. He has not been cleared from a concussion he sustained back in Week 15. This offseason, the Steelers should keep him severely limited so that he'll be fresh for the start of training camp.

Steelers | Former coach expects Ben Roethlisberger back    Fri Feb 17, 06:53 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he expects Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger to play in 2017.

Footballguys view: Roethlisberger may be considering retirement, but we think he comes back to play in 2017. Expect the Steelers to try and find an heir apparent at QB this year in the draft.

Steelers | Ladarius Green yet to be cleared    Thu Feb 16, 08:48 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green is not currently in the NFL's concussion protocol, but he's yet to be cleared from a concussion that he sustained in the team's Week 15 game opposite the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: This is a pretty bad sign. Is this enough to keep him off the field long term? We're tending to think so, given how teams have handled situations like this. Green showed flashes of production this season, but injuries once again derailed his efforts.

Steelers | Pitt will tag Le'Veon Bell if needed    Thu Feb 16, 05:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell will hit the free-agent market March 9, and general manager Kevin Colbert said signing Bell and tagging Bell are both options. 'The tag is always an option, and it's something we'll use if necessary,' Colbert said. Colbert did add that even if Bell is tagged the Steelers still want to sign him to a long-term deal eventually.

Footballguys view: If they tag him, it's only to give them some time to lock him down long term. Bell isn't going anywhere.

Steelers | Pittsburgh iffy on Lawrence Timmons    Thu Feb 16, 05:13 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent LB Lawrence Timmons could be playing for another team in 2017. General manager Kevin Colbert said he would love to have Timmons finish his career as a Steeler, but implied that the Steelers are willing to let Timmons test the free-agent market if he's deemed too expensive for them to keep.

Steelers | Pitt wants two playmakers for life    Thu Feb 16, 03:19 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers want impending free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell and WR Antonio Brown to remain Steelers for the rest of their respective careers, according to general manager Kevin Colbert.

Footballguys view: They'd be crazy not to. They have the money right now, and while there will be competition for Bell, they have the inside track. Whether in Pittsburgh or elsewhere, Bell is arguably the top fantasy back for 2017.

Steelers | Pittsburgh wants Landry Jones back    Thu Feb 16, 03:10 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Landry Jones is a candidate to return to the Steelers. General manager Kevin Colbert said Pittsburgh would like to re-sign their backup and keep him 'in the mix.' It was reported earlier that the Steelers view Jones as an elite NFL backup.

Footballguys view: He knows the system, so that's something, but Jones has yet to show us anything which leads us to believe he is a long term answer if Ben Roethlisberger gets hurt, much less, retires. Jones is a bondo patch on the Steelers Car.

Steelers | Landry Jones highly regarded in Pittsburgh    Thu Feb 16, 12:53 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent QB Landry Jones is viewed among the top backups in the NFL by the Steelers' decision-makers, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Gerry Dulac. Jones is viewed as being better than '80 percent of the other backups' by the Steelers.

Footballguys view: This is a bit surprising, as nothing Jones has done really impresses us. It could be he knows the system well, or it could be something leaked by his agents. We're not in love with him, and his presence under center limited Antonio Brown and the receivers a bit as well.

Steelers | Ladarius Green likely to stay put?    Tue Feb 14, 11:38 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green is likely to remain on the roster, according to Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, who believes there is 'no reason for them not to bring him back.' He added: 'His health will determine what happens from there.'

Footballguys view: Green flashed ever so briefly in his first season with the Steelers. He was bothered by various injuries and couldn't do much outside of five games. If healthy, Green can be a dangerous weapon for the Steelers high-powered passing attack.

  Steelers | Le'Veon Bell's injury being investigated    Tue Feb 14, 03:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) and the Steelers are being investigated by the NFL over injury report protocol regarding Bell's groin injury. The injury was not listed on injury reports in the weeks before the AFC Championship. Bell left that game because of the groin injury.

Footballguys view: The Steelers injury reports have been a little wonky, and of course the NFL is going to look into this situation. Pittsburgh has said that Bell's injury did not impact his practice participation as Bell missed practice due to a personal matter, not an injury. These investigations may lead to fines, suspensions or lost draft picks.

Steelers | Sammie Coates had hernia surgery    Tue Feb 14, 03:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (hernia) recently underwent surgery to repair a sports hernia, according to a source. On another note, it was confirmed that Coates did not have surgery on his fingers, contrary to a previous report.

Footballguys view: These were the reports we were referencing earlier. Coates is only recovering from one surgery. However, that doesn't mean his outlook for 2017 is any better. With the return of Martavis Bryant (suspension), it pushes Coates further down the depth chart. His play is not reliable anyway as drops are still a major problem for the young wideout.

Steelers | Anthony Chickillo signs pact with PIT    Tue Feb 14, 11:55 AM

Steelers | Sammie Coates has another surgery    Tue Feb 14, 08:21 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (groin, fingers) posted on social media that he had surgery to repair a groin injury.

Footballguys view: Reports are coming out now that reveal Coates is recovering from only groin surgery. Whatever the case may be, this is another incident with the Steelers injury report that is unclear. Coates has problems with drops and concentration, and that's why he's disappointed on the field. He's under contract through the 2018 season.

Steelers | Pittsburgh talking with Lawrence Timmons    Mon Feb 13, 06:05 PM

Steelers | PIT can save cap space if Ladarius Green cut    Sun Feb 12, 06:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers could save $5 million in salary cap space if they released TE Ladarius Green (concussion) with a post-June 1 designation.

Footballguys view: Green wasn't healthy in 2016, and was limited to only six games in his first season with the Steelers. He was effective in a couple of those games, and Green showed the ability to be a dangerous weapon within the offense. Green was rumored to be considering retirement before ever playing a down in Pittsburgh, and those rumors might fire up again this offseason.

Steelers | Pittsburgh wants Lawrence Timmons back    Fri Feb 10, 12:20 PM

Impending free-agent LB Lawrence Timmons is not at the top of the Pittsburgh Steelers' offseason priority list, but the club 'has shown interest' in bringing him back, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Timmons may be too pricey for the Steelers to keep. He can play on all three downs, and Timmons had 114 tackles and 2.5 sacks in 2016.

Steelers | DeMarcus Ayers has surgery    Wed Feb 8, 11:22 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR DeMarcus Ayers (groin) underwent core muscle surgery on both sides of his legs Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: Ayers can be a return specialist for the Steelers when healthy. From a fantasy perspective, his value is virtually non-existent...even in super deep dynasty leagues.

Steelers | Xavier Grimble re-ups with Steelers    Wed Feb 8, 09:24 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers exclusive rights free-agent TE Xavier Grimble signed a one-year deal with the Steelers Tuesday, Feb. 7. The NFL minimum for a player with one year of service time is $540,000.

Footballguys view: Grimble played 197 snaps for the Steelers in 2016 during the regular season. At 6'4" 257 pounds, Grimble knows how to use his frame to 'box out' smaller defenders. He'll compete as a reserve tight end for the Steelers, but we'll monitor his progress in super deep dynasty leagues.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell seeking third opinion    Tue Feb 7, 11:50 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) mentioned to people around him that he will seek a third opinion on potentially getting surgery. Previously, one doctor told him to get it, while the other suggested rest.

Footballguys view: One doctor has recommended surgery, while the other one did not. The third opinion will break the tie and determine whether or not Bell needs to go under the knife. Even if he does get surgery, Bell should be healthy for the start of training camp.

Steelers | Justin Gilbert released    Mon Feb 6, 04:09 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers CB Justin Gilbert was released Monday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: Gilbert is part of the nightmarish pair of first-round picks for Cleveland in 2014 along with Johnny Manziel. He will have a hard time sticking with another team at this point. Former teammate Joe Thomas indicated on Twitter that love of football is an issue with Gilbert.

Steelers | Antonio Brown ran wrong routes in 2016?    Sun Feb 5, 01:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown has already had contract with the front office in regards to a contract extension, but Ron Cook of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette believes the team should consider trading him as he enters his walk year. According to Cook, Brown committed three excessive celebration penalties early in the season, jogged back to the line of scrimmage in the team's first playoff game during a two-minute drill and frequently ran the wrong routes in more than one game as a way to pout about how he was being used.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are aware of all of these issues, but Brown's net addition to the team still greatly exceeded these drags on them. The Steelers could listen to offers, but unless a team knocks their socks off with a large haul of draft picks, Brown is likely to be a Steeler for the foreseeable future.

Steelers | Pittsburgh begins talks with Antonio Brown    Fri Feb 3, 08:18 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun contract extension talks with WR Antonio Brown and both sides are optimistic about agreement being reached well before training camp, according to a source.

Steelers | Chris Boswell signs tender    Thu Feb 2, 05:36 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers PK Chris Boswell signed a one-year exclusive rights tender Thursday, Feb. 2. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell still weighing surgery    Wed Feb 1, 01:14 PM

Updating an ongoing story, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (groin) is still assessing his options to determine if he needs offseason groin surgery. 'I'm kind of in the process of seeing a couple of doctors, seeing if I have to get surgery or not,' Bell said. 'I'm hoping for the best, but I understand it's a tough game. If I don't get surgery, I go into the rehab process, work hard, get back to how I was last year, or actually, better. I'm going to take it from there.'

Footballguys view: Bell's injury was worse than the Steelers let on and one that fantasy owners should remember because technically that means he still hasn't had a fully healthy year in the NFL, and this one included three games off. Perhaps the Steelers miscalculated by giving him as many as 38 carries in a game at times last season.

Steelers | Fitzgerald Toussaint re-signs    Tue Jan 31, 11:44 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Fitzgerald Toussaint was re-signed to a one-year exclusive rights contract Tuesday, Jan. 31, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have some decisions to make at running back with LeVeon Bell and DeAngelo Williams both entering free agency. Karlos Williams only has one game left to serve on his suspension, so he could be battling Toussaint for the backup role, or even more if Bell is allowed to walk.

Steelers | Antonio Brown deal should get done    Tue Jan 31, 05:27 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is expected to get a long-term deal done in his contract year, according to owner Art Rooney.

Footballguys view: Brown's locker room Facebook live kerfuffle and behavior that sometimes fit the diva wide receiver stereotype too well have caused some speculation that the team will part ways with him eventually, but he is only 29 and playing at a hall of fame level, so unless the off field issues get worse, Brown should retire a Steeler.

Steelers | Martavis Bryant not a lock to rejoin Pitt    Tue Jan 31, 05:17 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant has 'a ways to go' before the Steelers can count on him playing, according to owner Art Rooney.

Footballguys view: Bryant applied for reinstatement earlier this month and most reports around his time away from the team are positive, but Rooney's words are a good reminder that even if he is reinstated, there are a lots steps in the process to get back to where he was before his latest suspension.

  Steelers | Pitt wants Le'Veon Bell long-term    Tue Jan 31, 05:06 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers Le'Veon Bell is being viewed as a long-term asset to the Steelers, according to owner Art Rooney. Rooney said the Steelers are looking at Bell from a long-term view as opposed to simply placing the franchise tag on their star running back. Rooney added that he believes Bell has grown from his suspensions.

Footballguys view: Bell's suspensions could be seen as a reason to not commit to him long-term, but the Steelers know the value of their running back, and he fits well with their aggressive offensive philosophy and top-end offensive line. Expect him to be signed to a multi-year deal soon.

Steelers | Ben Roethlisberger expected to return    Tue Jan 31, 04:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger is expected to return next season, according to owner Art Rooney, despite uncertainty regarding his future. Rooney did admit, however, that the Steelers are probably due to look at quarterbacks in this year's draft class.

Footballguys view: The media will make a lot out of the uncertainty around Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown, but they are locks to be Steelers when the 2017 season kicks off.

Steelers | Ladarius Green's future with Steelers in question    Tue Jan 31, 04:11 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green has 'physical conditions' the Steelers need to evaluate this offseason, according to owner Art Rooney. Rooney was non-committal on Green's future in Pittsburgh.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have never confirmed that a concussion kept Green out of camp, offseason activities, and half of the season, but it is clear that concussion issues are threatening his career after his latest one ended his season. Jesse James should be considered the likely starter at tight end next season.

Steelers | Sammie Coates has surgery    Tue Jan 31, 11:23 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Sammie Coates (finger) underwent surgery to repair fractures and tendon damage in his left ring and index fingers, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Coates was mid-breakout against the Jets in Week 5 when he suffered the injuries. He played a small and sporadic role on offense after that and could be blocked by Martavis Bryant if he is reinstated by the league (Bryant applied for reinstatement earlier this month). Coates' fantasy stock is volatile heading into the 2017 season, but his talent and situation still give him a high ceiling if he can land more opportunity.

Pittsburgh Steelers impending free-agent LB Jarvis Jones is not expected to be re-signed by the Steelers with LB Bud Dupree emerging and LB James Harrison returning.

Impending free-agent RB DeAngelo Williams is unlikely to return to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2017, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette.

Footballguys view: Williams isn't quite done yet, and he's still got something left in the tank....albeit as a reserve running back. He should draw some interest on the open market for a team in need of quality veteran depth.

Steelers | Ladarius Green may not stick around    Sun Jan 29, 01:36 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers TE Ladarius Green could be released before the start of the 2017 season, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ed Bouchette.

Footballguys view: Green has a $6.1 million cap number in 2017, and there's $3.5 million remaining in dead money. He's a talented player who can create mismatches anytime he's on the field, but Green's first season with the Steelers was marred by injuries. He was limited to 10 games this year and missed the postseason run due to a concussion suffered in Week 15.

Steelers | Antonio Brown not long for Pittsburgh?    Sun Jan 29, 01:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Antonio Brown is about to enter the final season of a six-year contract he signed in 2012. However, his antics are reportedly 'wearing thin' on some of his teammates and coaches. One week after live streaming head coach Mike Tomlin's postgame speech after the Steelers' Divisional Round over the Kansas City Chiefs, he drew criticism from Ben Roethlisberger for pouting about not getting the ball enough in the AFC Championship loss to the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: This report is coming from long-time Steelers beat writer Ed Bouchette, so we're taking it very seriously. Brown is arguably the best receiver in Steelers history, but the season didn't end well for him. We'll see if the Steelers can patch things up with Brown and work on a new long-term deal. Stay tuned here.
