Steelers | Visit with Jerick McKinnon     Thu Apr 24, 01:26 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will visit with Georgia Southern RB Jerick McKinnon Thursday, April 24.

Footballguys view: The Steelers are only looking for a little more depth and McKinnon, though he looks the part of a lead back, doesn't have all that much experience running between the tackles as he took most of his snaps as a spread-option quarterback or taking a pitch on the outside. So he's raw and will take a long time to reach his potential if he ever does.

Steelers | Cam Heyward's option picked up    Tue Apr 22, 09:39 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers exercised DE Cam Heyward's fifth-year player option.

Footballguys view: Heyward hasn't lived up to first-round billing, but the Steelers are so thin at defensive end that they can't afford to lose him.

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert could be called to testify in Steelers OT Mike X. Adams' accused attackers' case, which begins Tuesday, April 22. The Assistant District Attorney and Colbert's lawyer have objected to his appearance, stating it will add no new evidence to the case and is unnecessary.

The trial of Pittsburgh Steelers OT Mike X. Adams' accused attackers begins Tuesday, April 22, where details of Adams' contract will be entered into evidence. Michael Paranay, 26, Dquay Means, 26, and Jerrell Whitlock, 27, all of Hazelwood, Penn., are charged with a variety of crimes ranging from conspiracy to attempted homicide. The defendants' lawyers have claimed Adams lied about the June 1, 2013 incident. Their claim was Adams stood to lose millions because he was already on thin ice with the organization for previous disciplinary reasons.

Steelers | Like two WR prospects    Mon Apr 21, 02:53 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have interest in Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham and Oregon State WR Brandin Cooks. Both could be available when the team selects in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft if they want to take a wide receiver.

Footballguys view: Beckham is unlikely to fall out of the top 20 and could join the Steelers passing game, which has been without a big wide receiver since Plaxico Burress left and Limas Sweed busted as a second-round pick. Beckham would give them three speedy, shifty wideouts, along with Antonio Brown and Markus Wheaton - a college teammate of Cooks.

Steelers | Two visiting    Mon Apr 21, 10:51 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are visiting UCLA LB Anthony Barr and Wisconsin DT Beau Allen Monday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Barr was discussed as a top 10 pick earlier in the draft process, but the RB-turned-edge rusher has been cooling as of late and he could be there for the Steelers at #15. If they take Barr, that would be two consecutive years the Steelers have taken an OLB in the middle of the first round.

Steelers | Interested in Andre Williams    Fri Apr 18, 09:33 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are interested in Boston College RB Andre Williams.

Footballguys view: Williams is a big back with a little wiggle and build-up speed at the second level. He runs too upright which makes him an even larger target for defenders to tackle. With 10 receptions during his college career, Williams is pretty much a non-factor in the passing game. The two-down thumper is currently graded as a third-round pick. The Steelers added LeGarrette Blount in free agency, but they still might add a back in the draft.

Steelers | Ra'Shede Hageman visits    Thu Apr 17, 07:13 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers met with Minnesota DT Ra'Shede Hageman Thursday, April 17.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need to get younger on the defensive side of the ball and need to firm up the middle. Hageman can line up as a three technique or directly over the nose and would be an interesting fit in the Steelers defensive front.

Steelers | Jason Verrett visiting    Mon Apr 14, 04:10 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are meeting with Texas Christian CB Jason Verrett Monday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Verrett is a smaller corner, measuring in around 5'10" 185 pounds. He makes up for his lack of size with a feisty attitude and ability to fight for contested passes. Verrett has the speed to fit in the back pocket of receivers as they move downfield.

Steelers | Bradley Roby visits    Fri Apr 11, 09:29 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers met with Ohio State CB Bradley Roby Friday, April 11.

Footballguys view: Roby is an option for the Steelers in the first round. He has the speed and aggressiveness to be a shutdown corner in the NFL. Roby quickly breaks on the play in front of him, and he can play press--turn and cover downfield routes.

Steelers | Ryan Shazier to visit    Thu Apr 10, 12:11 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are scheduled to visit with Ohio St. LB Ryan Shazier.

Footballguys view: Shazier is projected to go in the late first round by many analysts, so the Steelers know if they want him, they will probably have to take him with the No. 15 pick in the draft. Shazier is a versatile back who can rush the passer, drop into coverage and stop the run. He is a bit lean and needs to play a bit more disciplined, but could be a good fit for this defense.

Steelers | Odell Beckham meets with team    Wed Apr 9, 09:14 PM

Louisiana State WR Odell Beckham Jr. had dinner with the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Steelers have a need at the wide receiver position after losing Emmanuel Sanders in free agency to the Broncos. Beckham would make a fine first-round pick for any team because of his speed, hands and ability to dominate at the point of the catch.

Steelers | GM, coach at LSU Pro Day    Wed Apr 9, 01:56 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and head coach Mike Tomlin are attending the Louisiana State Pro Day Wednesday, April 9.

Footballguys view: The Steelers may be looking for wide receiver help here. With Emmanuel Sanders (Broncos) moving on in free agency, the Steelers are looking for talent. They recently added free-agent veteran Darrius Heyward-Bey, but they may also select a receiver in the draft. The Steelers could also be interested in a couple of LSU defenders like Lamin Barrow (OLB) or Anthony Johnson (DT).

Steelers | Calvin Pryor visiting    Mon Apr 7, 02:08 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are meeting with Louisville S Calvin Pryor Monday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Pryor would be a great addition to the Steelers defense. Like a young Troy Polamalu, Pryor loves to roam the field looking for a big hit. Pryor has the speed to cover a large area of the field, and he can line up close to the line of scrimmage. He's an option for the Steelers in the first round of the draft.

Steelers | Going for big-bodied receiver    Mon Apr 7, 02:38 AM

With the departure of WR Jerricho Cotchery to the Carolina Panthers, the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to add a big-bodied receiver in the upcoming NFL Draft. Texas A&M WR Mike Evans has been mentioned as a possible pickup if available.

Footballguys view: Evans would be a fantastic pick for the Steelers, but he's likely to be off the board before they pick at 15th overall. If Evans is added, he would instantly upgrade the passing game because of his size/speed combination. He's got star ability and reminds some in the scouting community of Jimmy Graham (Saints).

Steelers | Expect Markus Wheaton to improve    Sun Apr 6, 08:21 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team expect WR Markus Wheaton to play better in 2014, because he dealt with broken fingers this season.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners take note here. Wheaton is a crisp route-runner with plenty of speed after the catch. With Emmanuel Sanders gone to Denver, Wheaton will likely start opposite Antonio Brown this year. He has the natural ability to be a quality starter and fantasy relevant player.

Steelers | Darrius Heyward-Bey signed    Wed Apr 2, 01:30 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed free-agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey (Colts) to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Heyward-Bey will compete with second-year WR Markus Wheaton for the starting job opposite Antonio Brown. He's a big, fast, physical receiver who excels as a run-blocker. Heyward-Bey has consistently had trouble with drops during his pro career.

Steelers | Were finalist for Maurice Jones-Drew    Wed Apr 2, 01:20 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew said the Pittsburgh Steelers were one of the finalists to sign him, but he decided to sign with the Raiders.

Footballguys view: The Raiders get Jones-Drew, and he will compete with Darren McFadden for the starting job. In Pittsburgh, Jones-Drew would have been a complementary player behind Le'Veon Bell. The Steelers went ahead and picked up former Patriots RB LeGarrette Blount.

Steelers | Meet with Donte Moncrief     Wed Apr 2, 12:54 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers met with Mississippi WR Donte Moncrief Tuesday, April 2.

Footballguys view: Moncrief has the ability to adjust to poorly thrown passes, and he uses his big frame to shield defenders away from his body. Consistency is a problem for Moncrief, and he never seemed to play up to his full potential in college. Currently he's seen as a second- or third-round pick with upside.

Steelers | Two visiting    Wed Apr 2, 10:37 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are visiting with Michigan State CB Darqueze Dennard and Notre Dame DE Stephon Tuitt.

Footballguys view: Dennard is considered one of the top CBs in this draft class. He plays with a physical style, and Dennard is an instinctive player who can quickly diagnose plays as they unfold in front of him. This skill set helps him get to the ball quickly. Tuitt is a position versatile player with great athleticism. His best fit is as a run-stuffing defensive end in a 3-4 scheme.

Steelers | Markus Wheaton will have chance to start    Thu Mar 27, 08:25 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers likely will give WR Markus Wheaton every opportunity to win a starting job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Wheaton should win the starting job opposite Antonio Brown in 2014. We love his route-running ability and the fact he can get open against press coverage. Wheaton also has good speed and run-after-the-catch ability.

Steelers | Santonio Holmes not an option    Thu Mar 27, 08:23 PM
