Cowboys | Andy Jones given largest bonus by Dallas    Thu May 5, 05:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Andy Jones was given a $15,000 signing bonus, which was twice as high as any other undrafted free agent was rewarded by the Cowboys. Jones tested unbelievably with a 41.5 vertical jump and 11-foot-1 broad jump. If it doesn't work for him at wide receiver, the Cowboys could also try him at cornerback.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith won't go on IR    Thu May 5, 09:56 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) won't be placed on Injured Reserve because the team hopes he can play at some point this season, according to owner Jerry Jones.

Footballguys view: Jones is hoping that Smith will be ready for a playoff run. The Cowboys need to get there first, and they need a healthy Tony Romo to do that. We think Smith should be shelved for his rookie season so he can be closer to full strength in 2017. The Cowboys seem to be confident about his recovery from an ACL/LCL injury earlier this year.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott can help defense    Wed May 4, 04:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will be a valuable part of the Cowboys' offense, but defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli believes he'll help the defense, too. Marinelli said the Dallas defense will play the Dallas offense more than anyone, and guys like Elliott and WR Dez Bryant will force the defense to be physical and be better prepared for opposing offenses.

Footballguys view: A strong rushing attack is going to help the defense by staying on the field. This allows the defense to rest, and it causes an opposing offense to get cold. Elliott should be the focal point of the Cowboys offense as a rookie, and he could easily produce like a RB1 for fantasy owners. The rookie is clearly an option to take in the late first round of your fantasy draft.

Cowboys | Darius Jackson has uphill battle    Tue May 3, 05:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darius Jackson's best chance of receiving any possibility of playing time is if RB Lance Dunbar (knee) begins the regular season on the Physicall Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: He's an interesting name to monitor in deep dynasty leagues. Jackson will be behind RBs Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris on the depth chart, but he may be the odd man out when Dunbar returns.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith provides versatility    Tue May 3, 03:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) is viewed as a natural middle linebacker by the Cowboys, but they believe he can also play weakside linebacker, according to head coach Jason Garrett. 'We don't see that he has limitations at either of those spots. I think he'd be very natural at either one of them, and has the traits to do it,' Garrett said.

Footballguys view: We hope to see Smith back to full strength someday. Smith is not expected to play in 2016 as he continues to recover from nerve damage in his knee. When healthy, he can play any linebacker spot in the NFL and shine. Smith can cover, hit, rush the passer and seems to always be around the ball. He's a player we'll be watching closely in 2017.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris fine with RB addition    Mon May 2, 05:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris said he does not regret signing with the Cowboys this offseason even though the team selected RB Ezekiel Elliott in the first round of the draft.

Footballguys view: Elliott was by far the best RB in this draft class. Nothing is official, but he's got to be the starter at the beginning of the season since the Cowboys took him so high. Head coach Jason Garrett has not talked with Morris about his role on offense, but Morris is excited to compete for a job.

Cowboys | Dallas not worried about Dak Prescott    Mon May 2, 03:56 PM

Dallas Cowboys rookie QB Dak Prescott's said his DUI charge in March is something of the past and won't happen again. 'It was a mistake, but it's going to make me a better person and it already has,' Prescott said. Owner Jerry Jones said Prescott's character and judgment will help him mitigate his past mistakes. 'It's certainly something you should look at with the quarterback spot,' Jones said, 'but when you really look at it, what is impressive is that from everybody around him, the recommendations he got from everybody and the time spent with him, we don't think there's character issues here.'

Footballguys view: Many people in the scouting community insist that Prescott's DUI was not an indicator of the type of person he is. Prescott will get a chance to develop behind Tony Romo as the team's QB of the future. We like his rushing ability and see some flashes of Donovan McNabb to his game.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith familiar with team doc    Fri Apr 29, 09:31 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee), selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, had knee surgery one week after the Fiesta Bowl. The team's physician, Dr. Dan Cooper, performed the operation.

Footballguys view: It explains a little why they overlooked his long recovery, but we still think this was too early and for too little immediate return.

Cowboys | Dallas goes with Jaylon Smith    Fri Apr 29, 07:23 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith with the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: What a shock. Smith was a fantastic player in college but tearing an MCL and ACL puts him out of the game for likely a year and he will not have an impact for a defense desperate to have one right now. No Greg Hardy, no Randy Gregory for four games and no Smith. The Ezekiel Elliott pick was great. this one? Not so much.

Cowboys | Former RB high on Ezekiel Elliott    Fri Apr 29, 05:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is a better running back than former Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith was when he played, according to Smith.

Footballguys view: Well, that is high praise but let's slow our roll here. He needs to get on the field before he heads to Canton. We love him behind this line, but it's a tall order to compare him to Emmitt Smith, even if Smith is doing the comparison.

Cowboys | Dallas tried to land Paxton Lynch    Thu Apr 28, 11:59 PM

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch was being pursued by the Dallas Cowboys, but Dallas was unable to find a trade partner to move back into the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have said they thought they had a deal done with the Seahawks and might have upped their offer if they'd had a chance. Lynch was not getting out of the first, and John Elway timed his move just right to get his guy.

Cowboys | Dallas takes Ezekiel Elliott fourth overall    Thu Apr 28, 08:37 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Elliott behind this offensive line? Start up the Rookie of the Year talk because he would be deadly even without that group. He has a shot to be an RB1 right away in fantasy.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott gaining steam with Dallas    Thu Apr 28, 07:32 PM

The case for Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott to be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys appears to be gaining steam, according to David Moore of The Dallas Morning News.

Footballguys view: We'll see if this plays out or not. There's so much smoke fire alarms are going off. They want to trade back into the late first as well, so we still think they will lean defense for the first pick.

Cowboys | Dallas down to two players?    Thu Apr 28, 02:49 PM

The Dallas Cowboys seem to be debating between Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott and Florida State CB Jalen Ramsey with their fourth overall selection in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We're hearing that there's a chance this could be smoke to try and get a team (like the Miami Dolphins) to jump up and trade for the third or fourth pick. Elliott appears to be a great running back in waiting, but it seems an odd selection for the Cowboys who could put any number of decent backs behind their offensive line and succeed. We won't put anything past Jerry Jones, but Ramsey makes more sense.

Cowboys | Jalen Ramsey to Cowboys?    Wed Apr 27, 09:36 AM

Florida State CB/S Jalen Ramsey is a player the Dallas Cowboys are targeting if he's available at No. 4 in the 2016 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: They only have to hope the Chargers don't take him at 3, or that the Chargers don't trade down to a team coveting Ramsey. If Ramsey is gone at 4, the Cowboys are expected to take Ohio State DE Joey Bosa or RB Ezekiel Elliott.

Cowboys | Brandon Carr accepts pay cut    Mon Apr 25, 07:40 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Brandon Carr has agreed to accept a pay cut and is now expected to make around $6 million in base salary in 2016. He was scheduled to make $9.1 million in 2016 and have a cap hit of $13.8 million.

Cowboys | Dallas open to selecting Joey Bosa    Mon Apr 25, 07:17 PM

Ohio State DE Joey Bosa is still an option for the Dallas Cowboys with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft even though he was suspended for one game at Ohio State this past season. 'His character issue would not be a factor in us drafting him,' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys should be open to selecting Bosa...he's exactly what they need! Bosa can get after the quarterback early and often. He's got a motor that just doesn't quit, and Bosa is relentless on every snap. The Cowboys have made better decisions in the first round of recent drafts. We'd applaud the selection of Bosa at 4th overall in the 2016 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Won't trade from fourth pick    Mon Apr 25, 02:36 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will stay at the No. 4 spot in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have seen plenty of activity in front of them in the draft with the 1st- and 2nd-overall picks already exchanging hands. They can sit tight at four and get an impact player that may not have been available otherwise. We think Joey Bosa (Ohio State) would be a great addition to their team.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar likely will be on PUP list    Mon Apr 25, 01:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) likely will be placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list at some point next season.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys added Alfred Morris to the mix at RB earlier this offseason. He'll compete with Darren McFadden to be the lead back in 2016. We expect the Cowboys to select a RB at some point in the 2016 NFL draft as well.

Cowboys | Dallas will consider Joey Bosa    Fri Apr 22, 04:09 PM

Ohio State DE Joey Bosa will receive consideration if he is available when the Dallas Cowboys select with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys could use more pressure on the outside, and that's what Bosa brings to the table. He may not be the biggest, strongest or fastest player but he has a ton of heart, hustle and intensity when it comes to playing defensive football. Bosa can get off the line quickly and he is relentless in his pursuit to the quarterback.

Cowboys | Josh Norman might be option in Big D    Wed Apr 20, 11:45 PM

The Dallas Cowboys might be interested in free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) after CBs Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne posted zero interceptions in the calendar year.

Footballguys view: The Dallas secondary needs the help so, if they can find the cash, this is a good fit. Plus, arrogant players with chips on their shoulders are a thing for Dallas so, personality-wise, this is perfect.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott visiting Cowboys    Tue Apr 19, 11:48 AM

Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott will visit with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, April 19.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need a better backup plan behind Tony Romo in case (when?) he gets hurt again. Prescott could be a second- or third-round pick and give the team an interesting developmental prospect.

Cowboys | Antonio Cromartie wants to be in Big D    Mon Apr 18, 10:31 PM

Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie (Jets) reiterated Monday, April 18, that he wants to play for the Dallas Cowboys. 'My dream choice would be the Dallas Cowboys,' Cromartie told TMZ. 'That's very high on my list.' Last year he said he felt he was the missing key piece for the team.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris not worried about role    Sun Apr 17, 08:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris said he doesn't care what his role will be in 2016, and he is looking forward to the opportunity to play for the Cowboys.

Footballguys view: Morris is going to work in some form of RBBC with Darren McFadden in 2016. He's a two-down thumper who needs to come off the field in passing situations. If Morris performs like he's capable of, we could see him as the lead rusher for the team with McFadden providing an explosive change of pace.

Cowboys | Jerry Jones sees downside in drafting QB    Sat Apr 16, 09:33 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said drafting a quarterback with the No. 4 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft could be 'problematic' if QB Tony Romo stays injury free in the coming years. 'If he plays uninterrupted then you've got a problem if you've picked quarterback this year because you don't know what you got really at a time when he may be entering the markets,' Jones said.

Footballguys view: Yeah, it's really a problem to have two good quarterbacks....when most teams in the NFL don't even have one. Nobody thinks Romo is going to stay healthy for another five years (or maybe even five weeks). If the Cowboys select a QB in the first round of the draft, they would have him under contract for that amount of time with a fifth-year option for a good price. The Cowboys need a better backup plan in case Romo gets hurt again.

Cowboys | Jared Goff visits Dallas Saturday    Sat Apr 16, 03:54 PM

California QB Jared Goff worked out for the Dallas Cowboys Saturday, April 16 with head coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones in attendance. Jones apparently loved what he saw from Goff.

Footballguys view: Goff may be the 1st-overall pick for the L.A. Rams. If he's not selected at the top, then the Cowboys should be seriously considering him at no.4.

Cowboys | Tony Romo full go with throwing     Sat Apr 16, 01:10 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) said he has been throwing fully for a week and a half to two weeks in his rehabilitation, adding that the experience has been good.

Footballguys view: Romo is awesome when he's healthy, but he struggles to stay healthy and that's why the Cowboys fall apart. It's great that he's ready to throw, but the Cowboys need a better backup plan in case he gets hurt again.

Cowboys | Dallas not looking at Myles Jack    Sat Apr 16, 10:18 AM

UCLA LB Myles Jack (knee) has not met with the Dallas Cowboys at this point, and the team does not seem to be interested in selecting Jack with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Jack can play all over the field with great athleticism to cover in open space. He arrives at the play with natural violence, and he has nasty intentions when he gets to the ball-carrier. He's coming back from a knee injury, but all reports indicate that Jack is right on schedule. We think Jack is a top-10 pick and should be a star LB in the pros.

Cowboys | Jared Goff to work out for Dallas    Fri Apr 15, 12:22 PM

California QB Jared Goff will have a private workout for the Dallas Cowboys this weekend.

Footballguys view: Goff could be the 1st-overall pick to the L.A. Rams, but he may still be on the board when the Cowboys pick at 4th overall. We'd be shocked if he fell that far as the Browns should be over the moon to take him with the 2nd-overall pick.

Link to story

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott still high on Dallas' list    Fri Apr 15, 11:07 AM

Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott continues to be a player the Dallas Cowboys are very high on.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys could take Elliott off the board with the 4th-overall pick. He is the best RB in this draft class by far, and he would be an absolute beast (and big-time fantasy factor) behind that Cowboys offensive line.

Cowboys | Dallas down on Joey Bosa    Fri Apr 15, 11:02 AM

Ohio State DE Joey Bosa doesn't have as much interest from the Dallas Cowboys as they may have initially had, according to sources.

Footballguys view: That seems to be the case with a few teams. The Titans moved out of the no.1 overall pick, in part because players like Joey Bosa didn't intrigue them enough to stay put (plus, they got a king's ransom from the Rams). Bosa is all heart when getting after the passer, and provides value if he falls past the Cowboys at 4th overall.

Cowboys | Jason Witten continues to be iron man    Wed Apr 13, 10:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten played in all 16 games for a 12th straight season in 2015, and despite four quarterbacks last season he managed to snag a team-high 77 receptions. Witten came off the field for a total of seven snaps out of a possible 1,019 plays.

Cowboys | James Hanna could have bigger role    Wed Apr 13, 10:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE James Hanna elected to return the team after entering unrestricted free agency in March. He hasn't been a major factor in the passing game in the past, but he is viewed as a solid blocker who is an underrated asset in the running game. With TE Gavin Escobar (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' in December, and a question mark for the season, Hanna could have a big role.

Cowboys | Gavin Escobar continues to rehab    Wed Apr 13, 10:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar (Achilles') continues to rehab from a torn Achilles' tendon suffered last December.

Cowboys | Dallas targeting quarterback?    Tue Apr 12, 02:14 PM

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz and/or California QB Jared Goff could be serious considerations for the Dallas Cowboys with their No. 4 pick in the NFL Draft, according to a source. There are those in the Dallas organization who believe the Cowboys may not have as high a pick in the years to come and should take advantage of their position by drafting a potential franchise quarterback.

Footballguys view: Jerry Jones has said the team is not going to take a QB in the first round...and we don't believe him. They can stay put and get Wentz or Goff...both with the potential to be franchise QBs in the NFL.

Cowboys | DeForest Buckner visiting Dallas    Mon Apr 11, 05:25 PM

Oregon DE DeForest Buckner has a visit with the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Buckner is an option for the Cowboys with the 4th-overall pick. They could use pass-rushing help up front on the defensive line, and Buckner fits the bill. At 6'7" he's got an elite size and power combination. His wingspan is long, and this helps him get to the quarterback quicker.

Cowboys | No timetable for Lance Dunbar     Mon Apr 11, 05:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) doesn't know when he'll be able to return to action after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament, medial collateral ligament and patella tendon last season.
