Cowboys | Dallas restructures contracts    Mon Feb 20, 04:44 PM

Dallas Cowboys OT Tyron Smith and C Travis Frederick had their contracts restructured Monday, Feb. 20, to free up about $17.3 million in salary cap space. The moves place them under the proposed salary cap of $168 million for this year, according to a source.

Footballguys view: About $21 million of the $24 million Smith and Frederick were due was turned into a signing bonus in order to create the cap space. Smith and Frederick were set to make $10 million and $14.22 million next season, respectively.

Cowboys | Tony Romo willing to alter contract    Sun Feb 19, 07:31 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is open to restructuring his contract in order to facilitate a trade to a contender.

Footballguys view: We just don't see a team trading for Romo. If (when?) he is released, then teams should come out in full pursuit of the veteran passer.

Cowboys | Dallas interested in re-signing Jonathan Cooper    Fri Feb 17, 05:25 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent OG Jonathan Cooper is a player the Cowboys will try to re-sign this offseason, but he may look to sign with a team that will give him a chance to start.

Cowboys | Dallas looking to boost pass rush    Thu Feb 16, 09:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is hoping to add a 'war daddy' pass-rusher this offseason, either in free agency or via the 2017 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys were desperate for help last offseason and didn't do much. Until Jones actually does something, he's all hat and no cattle in this area.

Cowboys | Ryan Seymour re-signed    Thu Feb 16, 05:40 PM

Dallas Cowboys OG Ryan Seymour was re-signed Thursday, Feb. 16.

Cowboys | Tony Romo anticipating his release    Thu Feb 16, 11:50 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is expecting to be released this offseason. He believes he can be a starter in the league for two or three more years.

Footballguys view: There are several teams who will probably kick the tires on him, especially given the lack of talent on the market. Romo's best fit would be for a team on the cusp of contending though, and most of the teams in need of a quarterback need far more than that. If he lands in one of those situations, his production could be awfully shaky. Add in his propensity towards injury and his fantasy value is likely to be low.

Cowboys | Janoris Jenkins owned Dez Bryant     Thu Feb 9, 09:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was held to a combined two catches for 18 yards in two meetings with the New York Giants in 2016, and CB Janoris Jenkins said he knows all of Bryant's tendencies. 'Take away the slant and the dig, and when they get in 21 personnel and Dez is inside the number, you take away the corner post, he doesn't have nothing else,' Jenkins said.

Footballguys view: 'Jackrabbit' Jenkins was on fire this season, so him having Bryant's number isn't a shock. Bryant is going to have a more experienced quarterback in Dak Prescott's second year, so that could help but we would like to see him take his game in some new directions so that observant corners like Jenkins don't have a leg up.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith shows agility in video    Thu Feb 9, 10:02 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) posted a video to social media that displayed him changing directions 13 months after knee surgery.

Footballguys view: While Smith has tremendous talent, we still believe Dallas might have been better served by adding a player who was healthy and could have had an immediate impact. Hopefully, Smith comes back strong and is part of a strong foundation for the defense.

Cowboys | Chris Brown waived    Tue Feb 7, 06:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Chris Brown was waived Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Cowboys | Reunion possible for Dallas, DeMarcus Ware    Sun Feb 5, 03:01 PM

Impending free-agent LB DeMarcus Ware is 'leaving the door open' to play next season in Dallas, where he spent the first nine seasons of his career.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys could certainly use pass rush punch, and rejoining them would represent a shot for Ware to get another ring before retiring. Even if he is just a role player on passing downs at this point, Ware will draw plenty of interest on the open market.

Cowboys | Dallas an option for Adrian Peterson?    Sun Feb 5, 03:00 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson could be in play with the Dallas Cowboys as a potential free agent, according to league sources.

Footballguys view: This makes very little sense unless the Cowboys know something we don't about the direction and possible punishment in the league investigation of Ezekiel Elliott. The team only needs a backup and can probably retain Darren McFadden for a fraction of what Peterson would demand on the open market. Maybe Jerry Jones has a long-time hankering to see Peterson play in his home state and would go with a one-two punch, but it would be expensive.

Cowboys | Retirement not an option for Tony Romo    Sun Feb 5, 01:06 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has already received strong interest from television networks that want him to work as a color analyst, but he has no intention of retiring in order to do so.

Footballguys view: Romo would be passing up a payday of at least 15-20 million dollars just to play in 2017, so it doesn't make sense for him to retire to go to television unless he is concerned about long-term effects of further injuries.

Cowboys | Jason Garrett honored    Sun Feb 5, 09:21 AM

Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has been named the 2016 Associated Press Coach of the Year. He led the team to a 13-3 record during the regular season, earning the No. 1 seed in the NFC for the postseason, before losing in the second round of the playoffs.

Footballguys view: Garrett presided over a turnaround with a rookie third-string quarterback, which alone makes him deserving of the award. He has also been in some of the personnel decisions that helped the Cowboys get to this point.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott named Rookie of the Year    Sat Feb 4, 08:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott was named the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year Saturday, Feb. 4.

Footballguys view: Prescott winning over teammate Ezekiel Elliott was a small upset. Either way, there's no denying that together they were the greatest rookie QB/RB combination the league has ever seen. The Cowboys offense should only get better next season.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott consistent in 2016    Sat Feb 4, 04:12 PM

Cowboys | Brandon Carr a priority for Dallas    Fri Feb 3, 10:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent CB Brandon Carr should be the team's top priority this offseason, according to beat writer Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys will have both starting corners entering free agency. Morris Claiborne is younger, but Carr has been more durable. The Cowboys have a lot of players entering free agency and will have to make some hard choices in addition to being resourceful when evaluating other team's free agents.

Cowboys | Jason Witten not expecting extension    Fri Feb 3, 04:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said he does not expect to receive a contract extension this offseason even though he is entering the final year of his contract. Witten said he is taking things year-to-year and is not sure how much longer he will play.

Footballguys view: Witten's stats are going to put him in Hall of Fame consideration, but he still hasn't sniffed a Super Bowl. Perhaps 2017 could bring a deeper run into the playoffs with another year of experience for Dak Prescott.

Cowboys | Dallas open to offers for Tony Romo    Thu Feb 2, 03:32 PM

The Dallas Cowboys will be open to trade offers for QB Tony Romo this offseason once owner/general manager Jerry Jones meets with Romo, according to sources. Romo would prefer to be traded to a contending team. The Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos and Kansas City Chiefs are among the teams Romo may be interested in joining.

Footballguys view: Romo's massive contract may keep him from being a viable trade target, but trade talks could set up a potential suitor to have a contract already in place when he becomes available. Interestingly enough, Romo went to Eastern Illinois, the same as Jimmy Garoppolo, the other key quarterback name in the 2017 offseason.

Cowboys | Uzoma Nwachukwu signed    Wed Feb 1, 02:23 AM

The Dallas Cowboys signed free-agent WR Uzoma Nwachukwu (Seahawks) to a reserve/future contract Tuesday, Jan. 31.

Footballguys view: Nwachukwu is a speedy receiver who could vie for a roster spot if Terrance Williams and Brice Butler don't return to the Cowboys as impending free agents.

Cowboys | Six players work out for Cowboys    Tue Jan 31, 04:49 PM

Free-agents QB Garrett Gilbert (Raiders), WRs Uzoma Nwachukwu (Seahawks), Bryan Burnham (CFL), Quincy McDuffie (Broncos), Corey Washington (Bills) and undrafted TE Andrew McCleneghen (Southern Methodist) worked out for the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, Jan. 31. McDuffie ended up signing to an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: McDuffie was a top return man in the CFL last year, so he has a real chance to make the team to bolster one of the league's bottom half return games in 2016.

Cowboys | Backup quarterbacks might return for Dallas    Mon Jan 30, 04:46 PM

Cowboys | Anthony Brown could be a starter    Mon Jan 30, 04:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Anthony Brown may be forced into a starting role if either of impending free-agents CBs Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne don't return.

Footballguys view: Brown played both in the slot and outside because of injuries to starters in his rookie year, so he has a lot of experience for a sixth-rounder going into his second season. The Cowboys probably won't be able to keep both of their current starters, so the team will find out how ready he is whether they want to or not.

Cowboys | La'el Collins to play right tackle?    Mon Jan 30, 04:33 PM

Dallas Cowboys OT La'el Collins could be given a shot at tackle if the Cowboys re-sign impending free-agent OG Ronald Leary. ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer posits that the only chance Dallas may have of bringing back Leary is if he's guaranteed to start at guard, in which case Collins could move to tackle. However, Archer added that Collins needs more time to work on his technique and footwork after playing his first professional season at guard.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys "great wall" is not only the league's best offensive line, but it has depth to give the team options on handling Leary in free agency. Current right tackle Doug Free is in his 11th season and last year of his contract, so Collins will probably be moving to right tackle eventually anyway.

Cowboys | No issues for Jaylon Smith    Mon Jan 30, 04:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) is still sporting a brace to help lift his foot, but he is running and cutting without any problems, according to ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer. Smith can play with the brace; it's just a matter of how effective he will be with it.

Footballguys view: The news out of Dallas is mostly optimistic, and so far Smith is progressing on schedule to make an impact next season. If the Cowboys can get most of the player he was before the injury, their 2016 draft class will go down as one of their best ever.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden to be UFA    Sat Jan 28, 03:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: After back-to-back 16-game seasons (2014, 2015), McFadden only appeared in three games in 2016. Oft-injured throughout his pro career, some team could take a chance on him as a reserve player.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray talks up Ezekiel Elliott     Thu Jan 26, 10:38 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will break the franchise single-season rushing record of 1,845 yards in the next year or two, according to the current record holder, Tennessee Titans RB DeMarco Murray.

Footballguys view: We could see that happening. In fact, we're surprised it didn't happen this year. Elliott is a supremely gifted runner, and he's running behind the best offensive line in the pros. Don't be shocked if Elliott passes 2,000 yards rushing in a single season.

Cowboys | Charles Tapper cleared    Wed Jan 25, 09:56 AM

Dallas Cowboys DE Charles Tapper (back) announced that he has been medically cleared to play in 2017.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, we didn't get to see Tapper during his rookie season due to a broken back. Tapper is a raw player who needs to work on his technique, but he has the natural strength to stuff the run with authority.

Cowboys | Zack Martin's option will be exercised    Tue Jan 24, 07:40 PM

Dallas Cowboys OG Zack Martin's fifth-year option will be exercised, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. 'A big priority for us is to keep Zack around,' Jones said.

Footballguys view: Martin is one of the best in the game, so the Cowboys should most certainly exercise his fifth-year option. Next, the two sides need to work in 2017 to get Martin a new long-term deal.

Cowboys | Dallas wants to re-sign receivers    Tue Jan 24, 07:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WRs Terrance Williams and Brice Butler will hopefully be re-signed this offseason, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: Butler has the speed to take off the top of the defense, and they should be able to keep him around at a good price. Williams perhaps has more potential, and maybe a new start somewhere else would do him some good. If he's happy with his no.2 role behind Dez Bryant, then Williams could stick with Dallas.

Cowboys | Demarcus Lawrence will have surgery    Tue Jan 24, 07:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence (back) will undergo back surgery this offseason, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. Lawrence underwent back surgery last offseason as well.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Boise State in 2014, Lawrence only had one sack for the Cowboys this year in nine games. In the final year of his rookie deal, it would be good for Lawrence to play a full season and produce better numbers as he'll likely hit free agency in 2018.

Cowboys | Ronald Leary may not return to Dallas    Mon Jan 23, 06:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent OG Ronald Leary probably will not return to the Cowboys next season because he likely will receive more money in free agency than the team will be willing to pay him, in the opinion of ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: Leary is one of the best guards on the open market. Expect a team like the Broncos to make a run at him when free agency kicks off.

Cowboys | Retirement a possibility for Tony Romo?    Fri Jan 20, 12:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has already said he wants to continue playing, but Bryan Broaddus of the team's official website believes retirement is a serious possibility for the quarterback this offseason.

Footballguys view: We just don't see that being the case. It's a QB-desperate league and there would be more than a few teams interested in Romo if he were to become available on the open market.

Cowboys | Trading Tony Romo is 'No. 1 priority'    Tue Jan 17, 12:36 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is 'not going to be on (the team) in 2017,' according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, who states that trading the veteran quarterback is their 'No. 1 priority this offseason.'

Footballguys view: It's time for Romo to move on as the Cowboys are set with Dak Prescott as their starting quarterback. Reports have indicated that Romo wants to go to the Broncos, but they don't have any interest in trading for him...at least at this time. There are plenty of teams who should be interested, but it comes down to Romo's contract (and whether or not it will be re-worked) and what the Cowboys actually want for the veteran passer.

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten plans to return in 2017 for his 15th season.
