Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) is expected to participate every other day during organized team activities to make sure he does not rush back, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones.Link to story
Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott's investigation ongoing Mon May 22, 05:27 PM
Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott remains under investigation for an incident he was allegedly part of in July, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.
|Footballguys view: No charges were filed in this incident by authorities, so it's difficult to understand what the league is waiting on. Whenever they make a decision, we'd be surprised if any suspension came of this.|

Cowboys | Zack Martin could receive extension soon Sat May 20, 06:24 PM
Dallas Cowboys OG Zack Martin is expected to receive a contract extension in late July or early August if the team follows the same script it did to lock up C Travis Frederick and OT Tyron Smith in recent years, according to Dallas Morning News' Jon Machota.
|Footballguys view: A first-round pick in 2014, Martin had his fifth-year option picked up by the Cowboys earlier this year. That keeps him with a star on his helmet for the next two years. However, the team would be wise to get Martin done before he hits the open market. Their line is the best in the league, and Martin is a key reason why.|
Cowboys | Colin Kaepernick not on Dallas' radar Fri May 19, 01:54 PM
Free-agent QB Colin Kaepernick (49ers) is reportedly 'not a fit' for the Dallas Cowboys, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.
|Footballguys view: The Cowboys will go with Kellen Moore as the backup behind Dak Prescott. They better hope Prescott doesn't get hurt as Moore would offer them little as the starter.|

Cowboys | Dallas waives three players, signs two Tue May 16, 04:08 PM
Dallas Cowboys C Michael Coe, LB Jeremiah George and OT Levon Myers were waived Tuesday, May 16. In addition, undrafted free-agent DE Darnell Leslie (Monmouth) and free-agent TE M.J. McFarland (Jets) were signed.Link to story
Cowboys | Chidobe Awuzie terms Tue May 16, 12:13 PM
Dallas Cowboys CB Chidobe Awuzie's four-year rookie deal was worth $4.283 million and included a signing bonus of $1.255 million. The total guarantee of the deal is $1.74 million. He has a base salary of $465,000 this year with base salaries of $659,708, $854,416 and $1.049 million from 2018-20.
|Footballguys view: Awuzie can make an immediate impact for the Cowboys defense. He's smart, always finds a way to the ball and can disrupt the play at the point of the catch. Awuzie is versatile, so expect the Cowboys to line him up in different spots as a rookie.|
Cowboys | James Hanna back by training camp Sat May 13, 09:42 PM
Dallas Cowboys TE James Hanna (knee) will likely miss most of OTAs and June minicamp but should be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett.
|Footballguys view: He's been on the mend since late last year when he had surgery on his injured knee. Hanna is under contract through 2018 and a blocking tight end for the Cowboys when he's healthy. He was limited to just four games in 2016.|

Cowboys | Geoff Swaim still on the mend Sat May 13, 09:37 PM
Dallas Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim (foot) won't see much time during OTAs or June minicamp but should be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett.
|Footballguys view: Swaim was injured in an informal players workout at the facility earlier this year and required foot surgery to repair the damage. A blocking tight end only, Swaim missed the last seven games of 2016 because of a torn pectoral tendon (which required surgery), and he also had knee surgery last season.|

Cowboys | Alfred Morris on the bubble? Fri May 12, 11:59 PM
Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris' inability to play special teams likely places him on the roster bubble. 'You'd love for your third back, in a perfect world, to be a contributor on special teams,' Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said.
|Footballguys view: The Cowboys have great insurance behind Ezekiel Elliot with Morris, but that doesn't guarantee him a spot on the 53-man roster. Morris would likely be scooped up quickly if he gets to the open market.|

Cowboys | Rico Gathers tough to defend Fri May 12, 10:39 PM
Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers is 'always an option' in the passing game because of his big catch radius, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.
|Footballguys view: Jason Witten can't play forever, so Gathers is a deep dynasty prospect we're adding feverishly or hanging onto tightly. The former basketball star at Baylor has the size (6'6") and strength to be a factor...and a fantasy asset...for the Cowboys in the future.|

Cowboys | Dallas wanted Charles Harris Fri May 12, 09:17 PM
The Dallas Cowboys explored a trade with the Baltimore Ravens during the 2017 NFL Draft with the goal of moving from the 28th pick in the first round to the 16th pick in order to select Miami Dolphins DE Charles Harris, according to multiple sources.Link to story
Cowboys | Dallas signs most of its draft class Fri May 12, 02:56 AM
The Dallas Cowboys signed draft picks CB Chidobe Awuzie, WR Ryan Switzer, S Xavier Woods, CB Marquez White, DL Joey Ivie, WR Noah Brown and DE Jordan Carrell to their rookie contracts Thursday, May 11. Third-round pick CB Jourdan Lewis is the team's lone unsigned draft choice.
|Footballguys view: Switzer and Brown are the fantasy assets to consider in dynasty leagues here. While Switzer plays more like Wes Welker, Brown has drawn comparisons to Dez Bryant because of his ball skills. Switzer can work as a return man in addition to duties as a slot wide receiver. Brown is not as talented as Bryant, but he is fast and able to make crazy catches.|
Cowboys | Cowboys lock up Taco Charlton Thu May 11, 08:03 PM
Dallas Cowboys first-round DE Taco Charlton agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the team Thursday, May 11.
|Footballguys view: Charlton should give the Cowboys a boost at pass rusher in 2017. He's got the length and burst to get after the quarterback, and his size/athleticism combination makes him difficult to block.|
Cowboys | Kellen Moore expected to remain top backup Wed May 10, 11:38 PM
Dallas Cowboys QB Kellen Moore missed all of last season after suffering a broken ankle in training camp, but the team insists it feels good about him backing up Dak Prescott.
|Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Moore doesn't offer much if he's ever forced into the starting lineup. We've got next to zero invested in Moore in our dynasty leagues.|

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith expects to play in opener Wed May 10, 06:01 PM
Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) said he believes he will be on the field when the team plays New York Giants in Week 1.
|Footballguys view: We just want Smith to get back to the form he had before a serious knee injury in Notre Dame's bowl game knocked him off track. The Cowboys believed enough in Smith to select him in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft even though he didn't play a snap as a rookie due to the nerve problems in his knee. The nerve issue is improving, and all reports about Smith's recovery have been positive so far this offseason.|
Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott working on one aspect Mon May 8, 11:45 PM
Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott said he is working on 'becoming a more dominant second-level runner' heading into his second season. 'I think there were a couple times last season where I could've been (better) on certain runs when I got to the second level,' he added. 'So just kinda focused on finishing my runs and making guys miss at the second level.'
|Footballguys view: Elliott was already a player known for breaking off big runs in his rookie season. He had 14 runs of 20 yards or more in 2016, a mark that led the league. Teams are going to stack the box to try and stop him once more, so Elliott should be able to take advantage of those looks once again this year. He's an option to be selected with the first pick in fantasy drafts. His current ADP is 1.03 (RB3) in 12-team PPR leagues with the only backs ahead of him being Le'Veon Bell and David Johnson.|

Cowboys | Jonathan Cooper could start Mon May 8, 08:39 AM
Dallas Cowboys OG Jonathan Cooper will have the first chance to win the starting left guard spot in camp.
|Footballguys view: With La'El Collins moving to right tackle and Ron Leary (Broncos) moving on in free agency, the Cowboys have some question marks inside at guard. We're not predicting disaster for Dallas up front, but fantasy owners need to realize they're not as strong on the O-Line as they used to be.|
Cowboys | Noah Brown the next Dez Bryant? Sun May 7, 10:14 PM
Dallas Cowboys WR Noah Brown is the same type of player as WR Dez Bryant, according to Bryan Broaddus of DallasCowboys.com, and Broaddus said Brown is a 'nasty blocker' with a big catch radius.
|Footballguys view: The seventh-round pick from Ohio State is a bit of an unknown because of his lack of experience at the college level (only targeted 52 times with 33 catches for the Buckeyes). He's big, got a large wingspan, can track passes over his shoulder and can win on jump passes. Brown can be worked into a larger role eventually, but for now he just gives the Cowboys depth at the position. Keep an eye on him in dynasty leagues.|

Cowboys | La'el Collins to play right tackle Sun May 7, 09:11 PM
Dallas Cowboys OT La'el Collins has been working at right tackle and not left guard during offseason workouts, and Collins said the coaching staff has told him to prepare to play tackle this season.
|Footballguys view: It's an expected move after the retirement of Doug Free. Collins has played inside for two years with the Cowboys, but he was a star tackle in college at LSU and should have little problem with the transition.|
Cowboys | Rico Gathers to have a role? Sat May 6, 11:57 PM
Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers should make the 53-man roster, according to Jon Machota of The Dallas Morning News, and Machota believes Gathers can be used to create mismatches in the red zone.
|Footballguys view: Gathers was a basketball star in college at Baylor, but the Cowboys liked his upside enough they took him in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL draft. Jason Witten has to be winding down his pro career, so Gathers is an interesting developmental prospect to add or monitor in dynasty leagues.|

Cowboys | Ryan Switzer expected to be returner Wed May 3, 03:26 PM
Dallas Cowboys WR Ryan Switzer is expected to be a punt returner for the Cowboys and could also be used as a kick returner.
|Footballguys view: Switzer is dangerous with the ball in his hands. He has quick feet, great foot frequency and can change directions on a dime. The rookie from North Carolina can be limited as a receiver by his small catch radius, but as a returner he can make impact plays for the Cowboys in 2017.|
Cowboys | Chaz Green, Byron Bell to compete for RT job Wed May 3, 03:24 PM
Dallas Cowboys OTs Chaz Green and Byron Bell should be the main candidates for the starting right tackle job in 2017 after the team did not select an offensive tackle in the 2017 NFL Draft.Link to story
Cowboys | Taco Charlton's position determined Mon May 1, 11:07 PM
Dallas Cowboys DE Taco Charlton will begin his career at right defensive end, according to head coach Jason Garrett. 'We want to give him every chance to be a right end for us,' Garrett said. 'We feel like he has the traits to do that.'
|Footballguys view: Charlton has the length and burst to get after the passer from the edge. He reminded some in the scouting community of Chandler Jones (Cardinals), and there are many reasons why that comparison works. The Cowboys took him in the first round because Charlton he's got All-Pro potential and is seen as an ascending talent from his days at Michigan.|
Cowboys | Five UDFAs sign with Dallas Mon May 1, 08:08 AM
Undrafted free-agent QB Cooper Rush (Central Michigan), TE Blake Jarwin (Oklahoma State), QB Austin Appleby (Florida) and WR Brian Brown (Richmond) signed three-year deals with the Dallas Cowboys Sunday, April 30.Link to story
Cowboys | Immediate impact from Taco Charlton? Sat Apr 29, 10:52 PM
Dallas Cowboys DE Taco Charlton is 'going to be ready to play from the get-go,' according to owner Jerry Jones.
|Footballguys view: Charlton wasn't a first-rounder on every board, but he will benefit from defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli's coaching and good game scripts. He's a fringe consideration in dynasty IDP leagues, but still one to monitor in a strong DE class.|
Cowboys | Dallas signing Jahad Thomas Sat Apr 29, 07:34 PM
Undrafted free-agent RB Jahad Thomas (Temple) agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys Saturday, April 29. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.Link to story
Cowboys | Dallas grabs Jourdan Lewis Fri Apr 28, 11:03 PM
The Dallas Cowboys selected CB Jourdan Lewis with the 92nd pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.
|Footballguys view: A good slot corner who can press as well, but isn't going to be a factor against the run and could see a lot of them called his way. His size (or lack thereof) is also an issue.|
Cowboys | Orlando Scandrick being shopped Fri Apr 28, 09:27 PM
Dallas Cowboys CB Orlando Scandrick is being shopped for a third-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, according to sources.
|Footballguys view: Now that they have added Chidobe Awuzie, Scandrick is expendable. We'll see if they get bites.|

Cowboys | Dallas takes Chidobe Awuzie Fri Apr 28, 09:21 PM
The Dallas Cowboys selected Chidobe Awuzie with the 60th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.
|Footballguys view: Dallas gets themselves a good cover corner who can lock onto a receiver and stay on him. His size, speed and instincts make him dangerous downfield. He's not a great tackler but you can put him outside or in the slot.|

Cowboys | Dallas selects Taco Charlton Thu Apr 27, 11:23 PM
The Dallas Cowboys selected Michigan DE Taco Charlton with the No. 28 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.
|Footballguys view: Everybody loves Taco(s)! The thing is, Charlton had one really good year, so teams and analysts are wondering where he was before this season. he's a guy who has a lot of upside and if he plays like he did this season, could be really good. But the risk is, he flashed once and fades. The Cowboys needed an impact defensive players and will hope they just got one.|

Cowboys | Gareon Conley of interest to Cowboys Thu Apr 27, 03:46 PM
Ohio State CB Gareon Conley was contacted by the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, April 26, and recently had him in for a pre-draft visit.
|Footballguys view: The timing of the charges against him could knock him out of the first and maybe down to the third. The cowboys aren't risk averse when it comes to character issues though, so grabbing him even in the first.|
Cowboys | Jaylon Smith's nerves progressing Thu Apr 27, 03:13 PM
Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith's (knee, toes) nerves have regenerated enough in his left foot that he is able to lift his toes.
|Footballguys view: The next time someone talks about the Dallas Cowboys 'won the 2016 draft' remind them of this gem Jerry Jones grabbed in the second when they were in desperate need of an impact defensive player right away. Here's your reminder that the draft is part art, part science and all luck.|

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith improving Mon Apr 24, 11:38 AM
Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) has given the team optimism as the nerve in his knee is regenerating, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.
|Footballguys view: Smith had his knee wrecked in Notre Dame's bowl game and missed all of his rookie season in 2016 because of it. We want to see him back at full strength, but that may never happen with the nerve damage he sustained. Smith's status for training camp is up in the air, but the team should wisely be cautious with the young pro.|
