Cowboys | Tavon Austin a jack of all trades    Thu May 24, 12:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Tavon Austin will be implemented into the offense in a variety of ways, according to QB Dak Prescott. Austin can line up in the backfield, play X and Z wide receiver or line up in the slot.

Footballguys view: This has been done before, and while it works enough to be OK for actual NFL play, it doesn't work when it comes to fantasy games. Austin continues to be a guy we will likely pass on due to lack of production.

Cowboys | Geoff Swaim works with starters    Wed May 23, 10:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim worked with the first-team offense during organized team activities Wednesday, May 23.

Footballguys view: Without Jason Witten (retired), the Cowboys are looking for a new starting tight end and they have a collection of players vying for that spot. TE Blake Jarwin was on the field when the team lined up in two-tight end sets. TE Rico Gathers worked with the second-team offense.

Cowboys | Michael Gallup signs    Mon May 21, 11:49 AM

Dallas Cowboys third-round pick WR Michael Gallup signed his rookie four-year deal Monday, May 21. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gallup is an exciting rookie WR for fantasy owners to monitor. He's capable of making crazy catches seem routine, and Gallup has no problem working the sidelines or the back of the end zone. Without Dez Bryant, the Cowboys are looking for a no.1 receiver and that could eventually be Gallup. He's currently a favorite late-round pick with a current ADP of WR67 (14.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Rico Gathers could start?    Sun May 20, 03:42 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers is a candidate to step up as the team's starting tight end, according to NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have a collection of TEs on the roster right now, and Gathers is at the top of the list. He'll compete with guys like Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams arrested    Sat May 19, 03:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams was arrested in Dallas Saturday, May 19, on suspicion of public intoxication. He could also be charged with fleeing the scene of an accident and striking a structure or highway landscaping depending on his involvement in a one-car accident of his Lamborghini.

Footballguys view: This sounds like it could have been much worse, and Williams should consider himself lucky that he was able to walk away. Without Dez Bryant, the Cowboys need Williams to have a bounce back year. Last year, Williams only went over 100 yards receiving in a game once and didn't have a receiving touchdown. He needs to get healthy (currently recovering from offseason foot surgery), stay out of trouble and show that he can produce at a higher level in 2018.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith falling out of favor?    Thu May 17, 10:26 PM

Cowboys | Dallas works out several players    Thu May 17, 04:18 PM

Free-agent QB Trevor Knight (Falcons), WR Keyarris Garrett (Panthers) and WR Taj Williams (Seahawks) and undrafted free-agent RB Sherman Badie (Tulane) worked out for the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, May 17. The Cowboys are not expected to sign any of the players at this time.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Texas A&M (Oklahoma transfer) in 2017, Knight bounced around on two teams (Cardinals, Falcons) last year. Knight is athletic and strong enough to break some tackles as a runner, but his accuracy as a passer is a work in progress. We'll see if he can latch on with another team since the Cowboys seem to be passing on him at this time.

Cowboys | DeMarcus Lawrence not worried about contract    Thu May 17, 03:42 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence said he is not worried about his contract situation because he believes he will receive a long-term extension if he plays well in 2018.

Footballguys view: Currently on the franchise tag (that he signed), Lawrence is set to make a little over $17 million in 2018. The two sides have until mid July to work on a new long-term contract. After nine sacks combined in 2015 and 2016, Lawrence exploded for 15.0 sacks in his contract year. The Cowboys don't want him to get away, and even with that large one-year number we could see a deal hammered out before the deadline to do so.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams on schedule    Tue May 15, 02:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams (foot) is on schedule in his rehabilitation from surgery on his broken foot, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: The foot injury occurred in the offseason, and Williams underwent surgery back in February. Williams has not been involved in any teaching sessions yet this offseason but has been working with trainers on the side. Without Dez Bryant, the Cowboys could certainly use a veteran like Williams to elevate his game in 2018.

Cowboys | Maliek Collins has surgery    Mon May 14, 05:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Maliek Collins (hand) underwent surgery to repair a broken left fifth metatarsal Monday, May 14, according to a source.

Cowboys | Michael Gallup finding his role    Sun May 13, 11:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Michael Gallup said he is going to focus on running his routes and won't try to come in and replace WR Dez Bryant.

Footballguys view: Gallup could end up as a no.1 wide receiver for the Cowboys in the future. The speed of his transition to the pros will determine how soon he can make that sort of impact. Gallup can make acrobatic catches and has a bit of Brandon Lloyd to his game.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith no longer wearing brace    Sun May 13, 11:28 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith is no longer wearing a brace on his left ankle and foot due to drop foot. He said he hasn't worn it since resuming workouts in February.

Footballguys view: Two years removed from his major knee injury, Smith is poised to do more for the Cowboys in 2018. He started only six games in 2017 but appeared in every regular season contest. We'll see if without the brace Smith begins to look like the player he once was in college at Notre Dame.

Cowboys | Tavon Austin to be WR first    Sat May 12, 04:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Tavon Austin will line up at different spot this upcoming season but will be mostly used as a receiver, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.

Footballguys view: Austin can be moved around the formation and can line up in the backfield for certain looks. The team will be creative with the way he's used, but we're not expecting much from Austin in 2018.

Cowboys | Leighton Vander Esch contract update    Fri May 11, 05:44 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch signed a four-year deal worth $11.847 million. The deal includes a $6.696 million signing bonus.

Cowboys | Leighton Vander Esch signs deal    Fri May 11, 05:03 PM

Dallas Cowboys first-round draft choice LB Leighton Vander Esch agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the Cowboys Friday, May 11, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed, but the deal includes a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Vander-Esch is like a heat-seeking missile on the field. He can find the play quickly and doesn't take false steps on his way to making the tackle. He should start as the team's strong-side linebacker in 2018.

Cowboys | Dallas signs six draft picks    Fri May 11, 04:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys fourth-round draft choices DE Dorance Armstrong and TE Dalton Schultz, fifth-round draft choice QB Mike White, sixth-round draft choices LB Chris Covington and WR Cedrick Wilson and seventh-round draft choice RB Bo Scarbrough signed four-year contracts with the Cowboys Friday, May 11, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Schultz is nasty as a blocker and loves to mix it up. He's a decent receiver who can be asked to go down the seam against linebackers. Without Jason Witten (retired), the Cowboys will use a TEBC with Schultz and guys like Rico Gathers, Geoff Swaim, and Blake Jarwin.

Cowboys | Maliek Collins out around 3 months    Fri May 11, 04:06 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Maliek Collins (foot) is expected to be sidelined for around three months because of his broken foot and hopefully will be able to return at some point during training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Cowboys | Rico Gathers good to go in 2018    Fri May 11, 12:05 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers has been cleared to play after fully recovering from the concussion, neck and jaw injuries he suffered last August, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: Gathers has intriguing size and the athleticism to box out smaller defenders. With Jason Witten retired, Gathers should be part of the mix at tight end with guys like Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and rookie Dalton Schultz.

Cowboys | Tavon Austin to be busy?    Thu May 10, 10:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Tavon Austin could touch the ball 'a dozen to two dozen' times per game this season, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: It's hard to say how realistic this is, or what it means. We've heard it before about Austin and it never happens. But there is a potential talent gap with the departures of Dez Bryant and Jason Witten, so we're optimistic the opportunity will be there. The execution? Austin doesn't have our faith on that end.

Cowboys | Randy Gregory to file next week    Wed May 9, 10:50 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Randy Gregory plans to file for reinstatement next week, according to sources.

Cowboys | Terrell McClain to visit Dallas    Tue May 8, 10:38 AM

Free-agent DT Terrell McClain (Redskins) will visit the Dallas Cowboys this week, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McClain has bounced around the league a bit after being a third-round pick in the 2011 NFL draft (Panthers). He's visited with a few teams but might find Dallas his best spot. McClain was disappointing in 2017 during his time with Washington, but the best seasons of his pro career came in Dallas (2014-2016). It might be best for him to go back.

Cowboys | Committee approach likely at tight end    Fri May 4, 12:04 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to use some combination of TEs Dalton Schultz, Geoff Swaim, Blake Jarwin and Rico Gathers as a committee to fill the void left behind by the retired Jason Witten, according to the Dallas Morning News' Jon Machota.

Footballguys view: That makes sense, and it sounds like a situation fantasy owners should be avoiding in 2018. We like Schultz to eventually emerge as the top target at the position, but rookie TEs usually take some time to acclimate to the pros. Monitor this situation but don't get too excited by this group essentially vulturing points from each other on a weekly basis.

Cowboys | Dalton Schultz to be used as blocker?    Thu May 3, 09:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Dalton Schultz will likely contribute as a blocker in the run game, according to Jon Machota of the Dallas Morning News.

Footballguys view: Schultz has great effort as a blocker, in fact you could say he's quite rowdy when it comes to his blocking assignments. The rookie from Stanford is in the mold of Austin Hooper and Zach Ertz. He lacks one single outstanding trait (and needs technique work as a blocker) but is a solid all-around player who could have a long career in the pros.

Cowboys | Rico Gathers needs to improve blocking    Thu May 3, 10:17 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers needs to improve as a blocker to see regular playing time, in the opinion of beat writer Jon Machota.

Footballguys view: Jason Witten could do a little of everything, so it will take multiple players to fill his shoes. Gathers isn't a good blocker and has a lot of work to do.

Cowboys | DAL likes Blake Jarwin    Thu May 3, 10:17 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Blake Jarwin is the tight end that has received the most praise recently from executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need to find a solution at tight end with Jason Witten gone. Expect a lot of high praise about a lot of tight ends on the roster while they sort it out.

Cowboys | Jason Witten to retire    Thu May 3, 08:17 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten has informed the team he'll retire Thursday, May 3, and join ESPN as an analyst on Monday Night Football.

Footballguys view: It took long enough and the Cowboys tight end did time his decision badly, but at the end of the day he did what he needed to. The only thing worse than a last minute decision is a player who isn't fully committed. That's a way for them - and their teammates - to get hurt.

Cowboys | Mike White to push for No. 2 QB job    Mon Apr 30, 02:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Mike White will compete with QB Cooper Rush for the backup quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Rush, undrafted out of Central Michigan in 2017, has some Kellen Moore to his game. While White, the rookie draft pick from Western Kentucky, has a rocket arm we see Rush as more of a cerebral quarterback with limited arm talent. Dynasty owners (in super deep leagues) should be a bit more interested in White just given his natural tools for passing the ball.

Cowboys | Dallas worked out Lance Dunbar    Mon Apr 30, 02:11 PM

Free-agent RB Lance Dunbar (Rams) recently worked out for the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of North Texas in 2012, Dunbar spent most of his career with the Cowboys-- bouncing on and off the roster. He spent one year with the Rams (2017) and now finds himself looking for work. The Cowboys are likely just updating their emergency list.

Cowboys | Dallas signs several UDFAs    Sun Apr 29, 03:59 PM

Undrafted free-agent QB Dalton Sturm (Texas-San Antonio), RB Jordan Chunn (Troy), WR Malik Earl (Missouri State), TE David Wells (San Diego State) and WR Marchie Murdock (Iowa State) reportedly signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Chunn is a big back with good feet and he can pass block. He could stick as the #3 back if he can beat out seventh-round pick Bo Scarbrough (Alabama), who is the clearly superior athlete of the two backs.

Cowboys | DAL still looking for free safety    Sun Apr 29, 10:21 AM

Dallas Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team will continue to look for a free safety to compete with FS Xavier Woods, after they decided not to draft one in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Cowboys | Bo Scarbrough headed to Big D    Sat Apr 28, 06:10 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Alabama RB Bo Scarbrough with the 236th overall pick (Round 7) in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Many in the scouting community say Scarbrough has the body of a linebacker, and he takes a linebacker's mentality to the offensive side of the ball. Scarbrough has some power to his game and he works well in the screen game. He could work as a complementary back for the Cowboys behind Ezekiel Elliott.

Cowboys | Jihad Ward goes to Dallas    Sat Apr 28, 06:09 PM

The Dallas Cowboys acquired DE Jihad Ward from the Oakland Raiders in exchange for WR Ryan Switzer on Saturday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Switzer is the player dynasty owners (in super deep leagues) like. He's a quick, shifty slot receiver who has a bit of Danny Amendola to his game. The Raiders have a stacked group of WRs, adding Jordy Nelson in free agency and trading for both Switzer and Martavis Bryant during the 2018 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Cedrick Wilson lands in Metroplex    Sat Apr 28, 05:34 PM

The Dallas Cowboys chose Boise State WR Cedrick Wilson with the 208th overall pick (Round 6) in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Wilson is still raw as he's only been a receiver four years, only two of which were at a major college. He improved a lot from Junior to Senior year, and will get better as time goes on. He could eventually be a solid slot receiver but it will take time.

Cowboys | Mike White nabbed by Dallas    Sat Apr 28, 03:24 PM

The Dallas Cowboys picked Western Kentucky QB Mike White with the 171st overall pick (Round 5) in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: White will battle for a backup spot behind Dak Prescott in Dallas. His production bottomed out in almost every category last season at Western Kentucky, but his offensive line was a mess. He's got a nice arm, but has to learn to read the field and pick up blitzes more effectively. He'll have time to learn in Dallas.

Cowboys | Dallas acquires Tavon Austin    Sat Apr 28, 02:45 PM

Los Angeles Rams WR Tavon Austin was acquired by the Dallas Cowboys Saturday, April 28, in exchange for the 192nd overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: It feels like Austin's name comes up every draft since he was drafted in the first place in 2013. Austin has never quite hit his potential, and while we think the Cowboys will give him a sizable role, history indicates he's unlikely to suddenly take off in his sixth year.

Cowboys | Dalton Shultz joins Dallas    Sat Apr 28, 01:58 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Stanford TE Dalton Schultz with the 137th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Saturday, April 28.

Footballguys view: A solid overall tight end who is more of a blocker, he's an addition to help out Ezekiel Elliott on the ground more than Dak Prescott through the air.

Cowboys | Michael Gallup lands in Big D    Fri Apr 27, 10:02 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Colorado State WR Michael Gallup with the 81st overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Mike Mayock called him a "poor man's DJ Moore" and the shoe fits. A natural athlete with the burst and athleticism to get open, Gallup is really raw and struggles with keeping on his routes and not drifting, has his focus wane at times but he has improved and the best could be yet to come.

Cowboys | Knee not an issue for Connor Williams    Fri Apr 27, 09:25 PM

Dallas Cowboys OT Connor Williams said he suffered a torn medial collateral ligament and torn posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee as a junior in college but is now fully recovered. 'It's not an issue any more,' Williams said.

Footballguys view: If he's fully healed, he should find some work at least on the second line for the Cowboys short term, and could very well take a starting job in the not-too-distant future. His emotional reaction to his hometown team selecting him was one of the highlights of Friday night.
