Cowboys | Darren McFadden story revised    Wed Jun 29, 12:38 PM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) said he was injured in a slightly different way than the team, who said McFadden was injured trying to save his cell phone, released to the public. McFadden said his phone was in his hand, but he slipped down and fell on the elbow. He said he still has a few weeks in a brace after June 14 surgery, and it's possible he could miss the season opener.

Footballguys view: He didn't fumble the cell phone! That's McFadden's story and he's sticking to it. No matter the real cause of the fall, McFadden's status for the beginning of the regular season is up in the air. No matter as the Cowboys are going to force-feed rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott the rock in 2016. Veteran Alfred Morris will be Elliott's backup with McFadden down.

  Cowboys | Jaylon Smith's nerve hasn't improved    Wed Jun 29, 09:14 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) hasn't experienced significant improvement in the injured nerve in his knee, and playing in 2016 seems unlikely.

Footballguys view: There's no doubt that we're rooting for Smith. He was likely a top-10 pick before the injury (sustained on what many think was a dirty play), but now Smith may never be the same player. The Cowboys had to factor in the possibility of Smith missing his rookie season, so this news shouldn't surprise that much. However, it all comes down to next season. We're hoping that Smith can get healthy and become the star NFL player he looked like at Notre Dame.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott could see big workload    Tue Jun 28, 03:28 PM

Dallas Cowboys rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott could receive 280 to 300 carries in his rookie season, in the opinion of David Helman of dallascowboys.com.

Footballguys view: That number should make fantasy owners drool. The rookie RB has the upside to be one of the best in the game, and Elliott should make an immediate (and huge) impact in the NFL. The only RB to get 300 carries last year was Adrian Peterson (Vikings), and the next closest starter was Doug Martin (Buccaneers) at 288 carries. Elliott will be the centerpiece of the Cowboys offense in 2016, and he could easily finish the year as a top-5 fantasy RB. His current ADP is RB6 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Tony Romo throwing well    Thu Jun 16, 04:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) said he's throwing as well as he ever has as he continues to recover from a broken collarbone and subsequent offseason surgery. He and the Cowboys will go over his schedule in training camp, and he may continue to take Wednesdays off depending on how his throwing feels each day. Romo did acknowledge that he can't ignore his injury history.

Footballguys view: Romo healthy is a beautiful thing for Cowboys fans, since without him this offense is a shadow of itself. We think Romo is in for a solid season, and rate him as a solid QB2. Right now his ADP is QB13 and he's going as the 108 player off the boards.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant will be ready for camp    Wed Jun 15, 08:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) said he will be ready for the start of training camp. Bryant said he plans to work out with QB Tony Romo in the near future.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys cannot have a down year on offense again and Bryant is a huge factor in any success they have. We see him as a lock-it-in WR1 in fantasy as long as he and Tony Romo are healthy.

Dallas Cowboys LB Jerrell Harris (undisclosed) was released from the Reserve/Injured list with an injury settlement Wednesday, June 15.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott pushed into starting role    Wed Jun 15, 02:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott took all the first-team repetitions in practice Tuesday, June 14, with RB Darren McFadden (elbow) out with a fractured elbow for two months. Elliott will remain the starting running back for all intents and purposes. 'I think it's going to be real big for him, really beneficial, because now he's forced to go in and do it,' running backs coach Gary Brown said of Elliott getting more first-team snaps. 'He's forced to go in there to perform and perform at a high level. He can't rest on his leader maybe helping him a little bit. He has to rest on himself. So it's going to be a good thing.' Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan called Elliott 'a full-package running back.'

Footballguys view: We expected this anyway, it was just sped along due to a millionaire not letting his cell phone hit the floor. If only McFadden had a "burner" phone like Jax Teller. Elliott will have a steep learning curve but we expect him to excel behind this offensive line. He's an RB1 easily this season.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden hurt in home accident    Tue Jun 14, 12:33 PM

Updating an earlier report, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) required surgery on his elbow after he was injured in an accident at home.

Footballguys view: A dropped phone is reportedly the culprit. We've heard of everything, from slipping on McDonald's bags to tripping over a dog on the driveway....but dropping a phone and hurting your elbow takes the cake. McFadden is expected to miss two months and be ready by the end of training camp.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden undergoes surgery    Tue Jun 14, 12:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) underwent surgery on his elbow Tuesday, June 14, and is expected back in time for the season opener, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: Looking up "injury prone" in the dictionary shows a picture of McFadden. He was competing for a role in the backfield with Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris. At this time, it looks like the Cowboys will feature the rookie Elliott as their bellcow back. Morris is merely a veteran backup, and McFadden could be a change-of-pace back if/when healthy.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant limited in camp    Tue Jun 14, 11:54 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will not be a full participant in minicamp this week, and he'll mostly work on the side.

Footballguys view: This was expected, and honestly it should be expected going into training camp. The Cowboys are built to run the ball a lot, but when they go through the air then Bryant is the main target.

Cowboys | Dallas signs two defensive backs    Mon Jun 13, 02:30 PM

Free-agents CB Isaiah Frey (Steelers) and FS Daxton Swanson (Patriots) signed with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, June 13. Frey and Swanson replace CBs Terrance Mitchell and Brandon McGee, who were waived Friday, June 10.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden embracing role    Sun Jun 12, 09:33 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden called RB Ezekiel Elliott an 'awesome runner' and said he is going to show him the ropes while still competing with Elliott for touches.

Footballguys view: McFadden is wise to embrace his new role. Elliott is likely to be the centerpiece of the Cowboys offense, and he could easily be a top-5 RB for fantasy owners this year. McFadden is the backup and may only see the field if Elliott needs a breather.

Cowboys | Sean Lee expects to be ready for camp    Thu Jun 9, 07:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (knee) said he would be shocked if he was not ready for the start of training camp. Lee believes he's on pace to be on the field when that time comes.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys defense will be better with a healthy Lee back on the field. We'll see if he can be ready...then stay healthy for the upcoming season.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant on the field Tuesday    Wed Jun 8, 08:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) was able to participate in some individual drills during practice Tuesday, June 7.

Footballguys view: Bryant should be ready to go when training camp gets here. The Cowboys are going to run the ball a lot this year with rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott, but Bryant is still a WR1 for fantasy owners. His current ADP is WR6 (1.10) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Tony Romo staying optimistic    Sun Jun 5, 03:00 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) believes last year's broken collarbone will turn out to be an anomaly. Romo is focused on the team performing better. He believes part of that is him being healthy and teammates improving.

Footballguys view: It's the power of positive thinking, right? What you think about you bring about, but this is Tony Romo. There may not be anything such as injury prone, but if it was in the dictionary there would be a picture of Romo alongside it. We're glad he's staying positive...now, he just needs to stay healthy the Cowboys can make a playoff run in 2016.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris wants to be a complete back    Thu Jun 2, 02:27 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris said he wants to become more of a complete back by being more involved in the passing game this season.

Footballguys view: It's going to be hard to find any room to get snaps with rookie Ezekiel Elliott in the backfield. Morris is a proven two-down veteran back, but he's only going to be a reserve runner with the Cowboys in 2016. He may win the primary backup job behind Elliott if Darren McFadden is traded away.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant can participate in drills    Wed Jun 1, 07:51 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) had an X-ray on his foot Wednesday, June 1. He is now able to progress to football drills. He has not been fully cleared, but he can increase cutting.

Footballguys view: We're getting closer and closer to Bryant returning to full participation. The Cowboys will continue to monitor him as he deals with this injury.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott becoming acclimated    Wed Jun 1, 06:38 PM

Dallas Cowboys rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott said football has been slowing down for him and the game is becoming a lot easier, adding that he's settling into the Cowboys' offense and everything is going well. Assistant coach Gary Brown said Elliott wants more out of himself and the Cowboys want more out of him, but he's moving forward pretty well. 'I know my expectations for myself and honestly they're probably higher than what other people expect for me,' Elliott said. 'I'm going to focus on ball and focus on what's going on in this building and not what's going on outside the building.'

Cowboys | Minimal work for Lance Dunbar    Wed Jun 1, 03:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) was a part of pre-practice work Wednesday, June 1, before leaving for rehabilitation. Dunbar is still recovering from several torn ligaments in his knee. He could begin the 2016 season on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: There's no fantasy value for Dunbar with the selection of first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott. With Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris also above him on the depth chart, Dunbar would have a hard time even sniffing the field even if he was healthy.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant does some work    Wed Jun 1, 03:33 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) participated in pre-practice activities before leaving for rehabilitation work Wednesday, June 1.

Footballguys view: The team has been..and will be...cautious with Bryant as he continues to recover from this foot injury. If Bryant is healthy (and Tony Romo), there's no reason to think he can't be a top-10 fantasy WR once again in 2016.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden not at practice    Wed Jun 1, 03:21 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (personal) was not present for organized team activities Wednesday, June 1, for personal reasons. RB Ezekiel Elliott ran with the first team in McFadden's absence, while RB Alfred Morris took snaps with the second team.

Footballguys view: Elliott has been working with the second team as he has to prove himself as a pro. The first-round pick has superstar upside, and he could perform like a top-10 fantasy RB this year. Morris should work as a two-down backup. There are rumors swirling the Cowboys may actually trade away McFadden.

Cowboys | Maliek Collins likely to start on PUP    Wed Jun 1, 12:55 PM

Cowboys | Darren McFadden could be traded    Tue May 31, 07:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden may end up as trade bait before the regular season, in the opinion of ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: Yeah, that's fine and all but to which team? We just can't imagine teams lined up around the block to add the oft-injured veteran back. The Cowboys could trade McFadden, but they better not be expecting much in return. They are more than set at the position with star rookie Ezekiel Elliott and veteran Alfred Morris.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott signs rookie deal    Tue May 31, 07:02 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott signed his four-year rookie deal Tuesday, May 31. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: We'll be watching Prescott's development with great interest. He's super athletic, has a strong arm and is known as a strong leader. Prescott reminds some in the scouting community of Donovan McNabb. We'll see if the rookie can develop behind Tony Romo and perhaps be the QB of the future for the Cowboys.

Cowboys | Two rookies sign    Tue May 31, 05:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and DE Charles Tapper signed their four-year rookie deals Tuesday, May 31. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Prescott could be the QB of the future for the Cowboys...and that future may come soon if Tony Romo continues to battle injuries. During his college career at Mississippi State, Prescott was an athletic QB who had to work behind a bad offensive line. He can hurt a defense as a scrambler, but Prescott is underrated as a passer. Earlier this year during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl, Prescott went out of his way to show that he could throw with timing and touch from the pocket. We're excited about his upside in dynasty leagues, but he's got no re-draft value so long as Romo is healthy.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris not available    Thu May 26, 10:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris and RB Darren McFadden are not available for trade, executive vice president Stephen Jones said Thursday, May 26.

Footballguys view: We'll see if that lasts, but it's wise to keep the backfield intact for now. Once Ezekiel Elliott gets up to speed, we may see one of them moved, but the Cowboys know depth at any position is critical. We see Elliott as a solid RB1 in his rookie season, but the most McFadden or Morris will be is a handcuff.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott must earn starting job    Thu May 26, 01:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott must compete to earn a starting role this year, according to running backs coach Gary Brown. Elliott was drafted fourth overall by the Cowboys and will compete with RBs Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris. 'It's a lot faster pace,' Elliott said. 'The game moves so much faster. Yesterday, I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit shell-shocked. But today I came out. I was a little bit more prepared and was more ready mentally so it was a little bit easier for me.'

Footballguys view: We think this is all just posturing. Elliott is an incredible talent and the moment he gets the playbook under control, we can't imagine him as a second or part-time back. It might take a while, but we think he overtakes McFadden and Morris.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott working with second team    Thu May 26, 01:59 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has been working with the second-team offense during organized team activities this week. RB Darren McFadden has been working with the starting offense.

Footballguys view: He'll be on first team once he gets on top of the playbook, and behind this offensive line he could be a powerhouse in both the NFL and fantasy.

Cowboys | Tony Romo feeling great    Wed May 25, 03:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) isn't worried about his long-term future and thinks he can play four or five more years. He also said he feels 'ahead of the game' in his offseason work. Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said Romo has looked 'phenomenal' in offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need to be ready just in case Romo goes down again. He's great when healthy, and the Cowboys can win a lot of games with Romo in the lineup. However, he seems to always be banged up and the team struggles without him. They selected Dak Prescott in the draft this year to groom as a potential QB of the future.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant to have X-rays    Wed May 25, 03:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will have more X-rays on his injured right foot soon, and he hopes to participate more as the offseason progresses.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to monitor Bryant as he continues to recover from this injury. Bryant admitted that he needs to be patient during his recovery, but said he feels great. He did participate in the early part of organized team activities Wednesday, May 25, before his rehabilitation.

Dallas Cowboys DE Jason Neill was waived Tuesday, May 24.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith will be used in middle    Fri May 20, 03:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) will be used at middle linebacker when he is healthy enough to play.

Footballguys view: Smith has massive upside in IDP leagues and is deserving of a risk/reward pick in the second round of rookie drafts. Rolando McClain is slated to man the middle this year.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith signs rookie deal    Fri May 20, 11:53 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) signed his four-year, $6.494 million rookie deal Friday, May 20. He will receive a $2.9 million signing bonus. Smith will likely open training camp on the non-football injury list and could miss his entire rookie season.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys team doctor performed the surgery, so they have more insight into his condition than any other team. If he returns 90-95% of the way for the last three years of his rookie deal, Smith will be a steal. He has nerve damage in the knee that is limiting function in the leg, which is always unpredictable, so there's no guarantee that he'll play at all.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams not worried    Thu May 19, 04:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams is in the final year of his rookie contract, but he's focused on the upcoming season, not a possible extension or new team. 'Now, I'm just ready to be quiet and work and let my play speak for [itself],' Williams said. 'You can always talk [about] what you're going to do and then if it doesn't go as planned, it's like a slap to your face. So I'm just ready to work and just show my play.'

Footballguys view: We don't expect a ton from Williams if Dez Bryant is healthy, and it seems like his 52 catches for 840 yards could be his high water mark in Dallas - one we don't expect him to surpass in 2016. Consider him a WR6 or so this year.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott signs rookie contract    Wed May 18, 02:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott signed his rookie four-year deal Wednesday, May 18, worth $24.9 million. The deal includes a $16.3 million signing bonus. All first-round picks have a fifth-year option in their deals.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners are going to be salivating over getting Elliott with the first pick of their rookie drafts and we wouldn't be shocked to see him gone in the first two rounds of redrafts as well. Elliott is an elite talent behind a tremendous offensive line and could be in line for an exceptional rookie year.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant out for OTAs    Wed May 18, 09:16 AM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will not take part in organized team activities next week, but he hasn't suffered any setbacks.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Cowboys are wisely taking a cautious approach with their superstar WR. He has done well with the conditioning and individual work so far. Bryant is running full speed and is on pace to be ready for training camp in July.
