Free-agent WR Cole Beasley (Cowboys) and the Dallas Cowboys are discussing a contract extension that would keep Beasley under control for multiple seasons.

Cowboys | Dallas afraid to pay Dez Bryant    Thu Feb 26, 08:53 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant is likely to receive the franchise tag because the team is hesitant to sign him long term due to a lack of trust off the field. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport discovered via an open-records request that Bryant was involved in an 'unknown disturbance' in a Walmart parking lot July 11, 2011. Upon further investigation, 'it was determined that there was no offense' and 'all parties were advised they were free to go.' The team has known about this incident for a while. However, Bryant has had the police called to his home six different times since 2011. None of the calls resulted in any arrests.

Footballguys view: We'll have to see how this plays out. They can't let him hit the open market because he won't last half a second, but if there are off-field issues then paying him a big, long-term deal isn't smart either. Staying in Dallas though, we know he will be a top fantasy WR for 2015.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant's career in jeopardy?    Tue Feb 24, 10:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant's NFL career could be in jeopardy if a video he allegedly appears is as bad as it sounds. A source said the 'incriminating video of Dallas Cowboys superstar receiver Dez Bryant is being released today or tomorrow, and is so bad it's 'five times worse than the Ray Rice video and that his football career is in jeopardy.' The Cowboys have claimed no such video exists.

Footballguys view: This mysterious video will reach the surface eventually if it does exist. Bryant has no arrests during his time in the NFL, but the police have been called to his house six times. The Cowboys are likely to use the franchise tag on Bryant, but a long-term deal might be difficult to agree to if these off-field concerns heat up.

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne's could go to PUP list    Mon Feb 23, 05:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) is on his way back from a torn patellar tendon and could begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are not going to rush him. If he needs some extra time to heal at the beginning of the season, then Dallas will shelve him for at least six weeks on the PUP list. On the training camp PUP list he could return at any time.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray may have lighter workload    Sun Feb 22, 07:41 AM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) may have a lighter workload if he is re-signed by the Dallas Cowboys for 2015.

Footballguys view: It's just science. Running backs are like tires, they only have so much tread. Murray stayed healthy (for the most part) last year for the first time in his career. He was able to grind through a season where he touched the ball 450 times. The Cowboys should shrink that so he doesn't get banged up (if brought back) in 2015.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain faces fine    Sun Feb 22, 07:37 AM

Clarifying a previous item, free-agent LB Rolando McClain (Cowboys) faces a monetary fine for violating the NFL substance-abuse policy a third time.

Footballguys view: McClain finally had a decent season as a pro with the Cowboys in 2014, and now this. He would face a four-game suspension if another violation takes place.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant receives offer from Cowboys    Sat Feb 21, 02:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has reportedly received an offer from the team, but the Cowboys have not heard back from Bryant's agent.

Footballguys view: If Bryant does not sign a long-term deal, he could very well be franchise tagged. The tag would guarantee Bryant a one-year salary of $12.8 million. Placing the tag on Bryant would also give the Cowboys until July 15th to sign him to a long-term deal.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant a candidate for tag    Fri Feb 20, 07:25 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR Dez Bryant remains a candidate for the franchise tag if the team can't work out a long-term extension with him. The Cowboys still have concerns about Bryant's off-the-field issues.

Footballguys view: It won't make him happy, but we're betting it won't shock him either. Bryant is a spectacular wide receiver and will remain one of the best in the NFL regardless of where he plays. All involved seem to want that to be Dallas, but the money is the issue, as always.

Cowboys | Front office high on Tony Romo    Thu Feb 19, 02:16 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo has a backer in the front office, as chief operating officer Stephen Jones believes Romo has time left in his career. 'I still think Tony has a lot of time left, personally,' Jones said. 'I heard him say anywhere from four to five years, so that's a long time.'

Footballguys view: There's no reason for the Cowboys to be cool on Romo. The team has built a tremendous offensive line, and they can run the ball better than most teams in the league. The ground game helps set things up for Romo, and he's responded with better and more consistent play.

Cowboys | Sean Lee ahead of schedule    Thu Feb 19, 12:52 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (knee) is expected to be a full participant when the team begins its official offseason program in April. 'I think Sean is ahead of target,' executive vice president Stephen Jones said Wednesday, Feb. 18. LB Rolando McClain was signed to replace Lee, and the team isn't see where Lee will play in 2015. If McClain is re-signed, Lee might play the weak-side linebacker spot.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Cowboys here. We thought their defense would fall apart when Lee got hurt last year. Instead, the team came together and played strong in 2014. With Lee back, expect them to be even better this season.

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne still on the mend    Thu Feb 19, 12:51 AM

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) continues to rehab the ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee. Head coach Jason Garrett said Wednesday, Feb. 18, that Claiborne will miss the offseason program, and his rehab might continue into the start of training camp. 'We are (hopeful) about training camp. He might be one of those guys who doesn't start right away in training camp, but that's a long way off.'

Footballguys view: Claiborne will be monitored closely as the Cowboys continue through the offseason. If he's not quite ready by the time the regular season starts, Claiborne could be put on the PUP list to begin the year.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray irreplaceable?    Wed Feb 18, 05:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray may be on his way out of Dallas if WR Dez Bryant is given the franchise tag. Head coach Jason Garrett said he doesn't like the idea of Murray simply being replaced by another running back, emphasizing Murray's importance to the Cowboys' offense.

Footballguys view: Sure, Joseph Randle is a talented guy but he's not the player that Murray is. Running backs can grind down opponents as the game goes on, and the Cowboys are built to be one of the best running teams in the league. Both parties have three weeks to work something out before Murray can test the free-agent market.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant would be unhappy with tag    Tue Feb 17, 09:07 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant would get $13 million instead of $30-40 million guaranteed money if he is slapped with the franchise tag. According to sources, he would likely not participate in the team's offseason program if he is franchised.

Footballguys view: No player wants to be slapped with the franchise tag, and Bryant is no different. Bryant is looking for a long-term deal, and the franchise tag would only fully guarantee one season at a rate of approximately $12.8 million. Teams use the franchise tag to keep expensive players around, but they also use the tag to extend the time for contract talks. Franchises have until July 15th to reach long-term agreements with franchise tagged players.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray's rep. to meet with VP    Tue Feb 17, 02:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray's representative will meet with executive vice president Stephen Jones this week, possibly indicating that a long-term deal could be in the works. Jones also said the team could use the franchise tag on Murray.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are in a bind with both Murray and WR Dez Bryant set to hit the open market. They may not be able to keep both, unless someone takes a discount. Murray is coming off a career-best 1,845 yards rushing in 2014, and his new deal could be among the richest at the running back position. According to OverTheCap.com, the Cowboys may have only around $10 million to spend in free agency.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant to get franchise tag?    Tue Feb 17, 02:13 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent WR Dez Bryant could be franchise tagged, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones. 'Right now all things being equal, it's leaning more [towards] Dez with the franchise [tag] than it is not,' Jones said. 'But that doesn't mean it will stay that way.' Jones was also uncertain about having a meeting with Bryant's agent during the NFL Scouting Combine, another indication that Bryant could be getting the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: If they use the franchise tag, then Bryant is fully guaranteed a one-year salary of around $12.8 million. Most importantly, the Cowboys would have until July 15th to sign Bryant to a new long-term deal.

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray will not say if there are ongoing negotiations between his agent and the Cowboys. He has also said he would be involved in talks with the Cowboys and other teams if he is not signed by the March 10 deadline.

Footballguys view: Murray has made no mystery about his willingness to stay with the Cowboys. We'll see if the two sides can find a deal that is mutually beneficial. In addition to Murray, the Cowboys also are facing a big price tag for WR Dez Bryant.

Cowboys | Pokes to decide on DeMarco Murray    Sun Feb 8, 08:11 PM

The Dallas Cowboys have a tough choice to make with impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray. If the team uses the franchise tag on impending free-agent WR Dez Bryant, they cannot use it on Murray. And if they are able to work out a long-term deal with Bryant by March 2, the team would still need to decide in a one-year, $10.93 guaranteed deal for Murray is a wise choice since they have some tough salary cap decisions to make.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need to keep Murray around in 2015 if they can. They'll have a ton of money committed to Dez Bryant, but Murray is the heart and soul of the offense. The Cowboys were energized this year by Murray's career-best season. His 2,200 all-purpose yards would be hard to replicate if he leaves in free agency.

Cowboys | Dallas decision coming on Dez Bryant    Sun Feb 8, 08:09 PM

The Dallas Cowboys will either re-sign impending WR Dez Bryant to a long-term deal with a hefty guarantee by March 2 or protect his rights by slapping him with the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: If he is tagged, the projection would be a one-year, $12.8 million guaranteed salary. After that, the Cowboys would have until July 15th to work out a new long-term deal.

Dallas Cowboys OT Doug Free's contract will officially void Feb. 15, casting $3.98 million of dead money toward the team's salary cap. The team could consider re-signing Free.

Footballguys view: Free is going to draw some interest on the open market. A team like the Broncos could be very interested in adding Free to start at right tackle.

Cowboys | Joseph Randle has charge dropped    Fri Feb 6, 01:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle had a drug charge dropped Friday, Feb. 6. The suspicion of marijuana charge was dropped because there were some inconsistencies, according to police spokesman Lt. James Espinoza. Joseph was arrested but not taken into custody Tuesday, Feb. 3.

Footballguys view: Randle dodges a bullet here. The Cowboys have to decide whether or not they're going to bring back DeMarco Murray in free agency. If they don't bring Murray back, Randle could take over as the lead back. He won't get that opportunity if he's getting in trouble with the law.

NFL | Darius White on the NFL radar    Wed Feb 4, 08:08 PM

Drew Davison, from the Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, reports Darius White (former Texas and Missouri WR) is working hard to get on the NFL radar. "My mindset is to play in the NFL, that's what I've wanted to do since my Dunbar [high school] days," White said. "I've just got to get my name out there and get someone's attention. All it takes is one person to get their attention."

Footballguys view: A five-star recruit out of high school, White failed to impress during his time with the Longhorns or the Tigers. He is still lightning fast with the quickness to get separation at the stem of his route. White was a player to watch during the College Gridiron Showcase. A prep star in Texas, it wouldn't surprise us to see the Cowboys give him a look as an undrafted free agent.

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne facing uphill battle     Mon Feb 2, 09:05 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) is unlikely to participate in the team's offseason program or the early portion of training camp, according to ESPN Cowboys reporter Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: Claiborne is recovering from a ruptured left patellar tendon and he had a knee scope a few weeks ago. In 2015, he'll be recovering from surgeries in both knees. It's certainly a make-or-break year for Claiborne as he's in a contract year in 2015.

Cowboys | Cowboys believe in Joseph Randle?    Sat Jan 31, 12:26 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle was the team's primary backup this year, and there are people within the organization that believe he can be a 1,400-yard rusher as a lead back.

Footballguys view: No offense to Randle--but he's no DeMarco Murray. He's arguable faster than Murray, but he's not as powerful or instinctive as a runner. Now, behind that monster O-Line, Randle could be a 1,000-yard rusher...but would he be as dangerous as Murray on a game-to-game basis? This is a huge question mark for the Cowboys as they are facing the decision of whether or not to re-sign Murray in free agency this offseason.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray getting support from QB    Fri Jan 23, 06:29 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray is getting support from QB Tony Romo to stay with the team long term. Romo said he is consistently talking to owner Jerry Jones about bringing him back in 2015.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have to bring Murray back, right? We can't imagine him signing with another team after the season he had with Dallas in 2014. He's the engine to the offense, and it would be incredibly difficult to replace him. Murray is set to be an unrestricted free agent this offseason, but we feel the Cowboys will find a way to bring him back.

Cowboys | Tony Romo wants Dez Bryant to return    Fri Jan 23, 05:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant is getting support from QB Tony Romo to stay with the team long term. Romo said he is consistently talking to owner Jerry Jones about bringing him back in 2015.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys could place the franchise tag on Bryant this offseason. The tag comes with a one-year fully guaranteed salary of around $12.7 million. They would prevent any other team from negotiating with him, and this would allow them a longer time (July 15th deadline) to sign him to a long-term deal.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray could be cap casualty     Thu Jan 15, 10:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray will be tough sign to a long-term extension if WR Dez Bryant is also signed, team owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, Jan. 15. Jones called the prospect of signing both players 'possible' but not 'financially reasonable.'

Footballguys view: Murray could hit the open market, which could net him some serious coin. He's coming off the best year of his career after rushing for 1,845 yards (and 13 rushing touchdowns) in 2014. Running backs don't break the bank on the open market, but Murray could certainly sign the largest contract of any back available in free agency this year.

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo will not be asked to restructure his contract in the offseason unless it would allow the Cowboys to sign a player that could put the team in the Super Bowl, team owner Jerry Jones said Thursday, Jan. 15.

Footballguys view: What if that player is running back DeMarco Murray? The Cowboys may not be able to afford Murray as he's set to hit free agency at the start of the new league year. We have a feeling that Romo would move some money around to keep Murray around. Stay tuned.

The Dallas Cowboys and impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray and disagree on his value. The team offered him a four-year deal worth slightly more than $16 million. He might test the open market, or the team could slap him with the franchise tag.

Footballguys view: At this moment, Murray looks more likely to be elsewhere next season than on the Dallas Cowboys. Sixteen million is more along the lines of what Murray should garner in guaranteed money than full contract value. Chances are the starting RB for the Cowboys in 2015 is not on the roster right now.
