Cowboys | Leighton Vander Esch expected for workouts    Tue Jan 14, 09:28 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch (neck) is expected to be ready for the offseason workouts even though he underwent neck surgery Thursday, Jan. 14, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Vander Esch originally wanted to avoid surgery but the rest he was giving his neck injury wasn't doing the trick. He recently went under the knife and the team is hopeful Vander Esch will be ready at some time in the spring. However, even if he is ready for action we think the Cowboys will play it smart and ease him back into action. The more realistic full return date should be in training camp.

Cowboys | Surgery for Leighton Vander Esch    Tue Jan 14, 05:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch (neck) underwent non-evasive surgery on his neck Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Footballguys view: Vander Esch was an All-Pro selection as a rookie in 2018 but only appeared in nine games last season. He wanted to avoid surgery but rest wasn't getting the injury healed properly. This non-evasive surgery may not knock him out of action during offseason workouts later this spring. That being said, we're sure the Cowboys will be careful while bringing back their 2018 first-round pick.

Cowboys | Mike McCarthy agrees with Dallas    Mon Jan 6, 10:01 AM

Former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy agreed to become the new head coach of the Dallas Cowboys Monday, Jan. 6.

Footballguys view: Okay, forget that 'super early' stuff we were talking about on Sunday when the team officially relieved former head coach Jason Garrett of his duties. McCarthy did impress during his meeting with the team last week and they didn't take long making a decision. McCarthy was out of coaching in 2019 but the Browns, Giants and Panthers (in addition to the Cowboys) all showed interest. Things did not end well for McCarthy in Green Bay but now he'll get a fresh start as the head coach of a Cowboys team that has a ton of talent. We'll see if McCarthy can be the key to get them over the top and in the Super Bowl hunt.

Cowboys | Jason Garrett officially relieved of duties    Sun Jan 5, 06:15 PM

They've now officially ended Garrett's time as their head coach and have already begun their search for his replacement. Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy reportedly had a good visit with the Cowboys brass and he may be considered the front-runner in this job search but it's super early.

Cowboys | Clayton Thorson signs futures contract    Wed Jan 1, 12:41 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Clayton Thorson signed a futures contract with the club on Tuesday, Dec. 31.

Footballguys view: Thorson was a four-year starter at Northwestern and the Eagles selected him as a fifth-round pick in the 2019 NFL draft. He's a sturdy quarterback who can pick up tough yards with his feet. Thorson has decent footwork as a passer but his deep passes tend to float. He did not make the Eagles 53-man roster and was waived at the end of the preseason, and that's when the Cowboys promptly scooped him up as a practice squad player. We'll monitor him but only in crazy deep dynasty formats.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have yet to sign Cooper or QB Dak Prescott to long-term contracts. Cooper is a priority for the team, but we'll have to see what happens with Prescott too. One of them may be in line to get the franchise tag this offseason if no long-term deal can be struck before free agency.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott misses another practice    Thu Dec 26, 05:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott (shoulder) remained sidelined at practice Thursday, Dec. 26.
