Cowboys | Alfred Morris not available    Thu May 26, 10:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris and RB Darren McFadden are not available for trade, executive vice president Stephen Jones said Thursday, May 26.

Footballguys view: We'll see if that lasts, but it's wise to keep the backfield intact for now. Once Ezekiel Elliott gets up to speed, we may see one of them moved, but the Cowboys know depth at any position is critical. We see Elliott as a solid RB1 in his rookie season, but the most McFadden or Morris will be is a handcuff.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott must earn starting job    Thu May 26, 01:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott must compete to earn a starting role this year, according to running backs coach Gary Brown. Elliott was drafted fourth overall by the Cowboys and will compete with RBs Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris. 'It's a lot faster pace,' Elliott said. 'The game moves so much faster. Yesterday, I'm not going to lie, I was a little bit shell-shocked. But today I came out. I was a little bit more prepared and was more ready mentally so it was a little bit easier for me.'

Footballguys view: We think this is all just posturing. Elliott is an incredible talent and the moment he gets the playbook under control, we can't imagine him as a second or part-time back. It might take a while, but we think he overtakes McFadden and Morris.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott working with second team    Thu May 26, 01:59 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has been working with the second-team offense during organized team activities this week. RB Darren McFadden has been working with the starting offense.

Footballguys view: He'll be on first team once he gets on top of the playbook, and behind this offensive line he could be a powerhouse in both the NFL and fantasy.

Cowboys | Tony Romo feeling great    Wed May 25, 03:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) isn't worried about his long-term future and thinks he can play four or five more years. He also said he feels 'ahead of the game' in his offseason work. Quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said Romo has looked 'phenomenal' in offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need to be ready just in case Romo goes down again. He's great when healthy, and the Cowboys can win a lot of games with Romo in the lineup. However, he seems to always be banged up and the team struggles without him. They selected Dak Prescott in the draft this year to groom as a potential QB of the future.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant to have X-rays    Wed May 25, 03:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will have more X-rays on his injured right foot soon, and he hopes to participate more as the offseason progresses.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to monitor Bryant as he continues to recover from this injury. Bryant admitted that he needs to be patient during his recovery, but said he feels great. He did participate in the early part of organized team activities Wednesday, May 25, before his rehabilitation.

Cowboys | Zach Wood signed    Tue May 24, 06:23 PM

Undrafted free-agent DE Zach Wood (Southern Methodist) signed with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, May 24.

Cowboys | Jason Neill waived    Tue May 24, 06:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Jason Neill was waived Tuesday, May 24.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith will be used in middle    Fri May 20, 03:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) will be used at middle linebacker when he is healthy enough to play.

Footballguys view: Smith has massive upside in IDP leagues and is deserving of a risk/reward pick in the second round of rookie drafts. Rolando McClain is slated to man the middle this year.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith signs rookie deal    Fri May 20, 11:53 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) signed his four-year, $6.494 million rookie deal Friday, May 20. He will receive a $2.9 million signing bonus. Smith will likely open training camp on the non-football injury list and could miss his entire rookie season.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys team doctor performed the surgery, so they have more insight into his condition than any other team. If he returns 90-95% of the way for the last three years of his rookie deal, Smith will be a steal. He has nerve damage in the knee that is limiting function in the leg, which is always unpredictable, so there's no guarantee that he'll play at all.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams not worried    Thu May 19, 04:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams is in the final year of his rookie contract, but he's focused on the upcoming season, not a possible extension or new team. 'Now, I'm just ready to be quiet and work and let my play speak for [itself],' Williams said. 'You can always talk [about] what you're going to do and then if it doesn't go as planned, it's like a slap to your face. So I'm just ready to work and just show my play.'

Footballguys view: We don't expect a ton from Williams if Dez Bryant is healthy, and it seems like his 52 catches for 840 yards could be his high water mark in Dallas - one we don't expect him to surpass in 2016. Consider him a WR6 or so this year.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott signs rookie contract    Wed May 18, 02:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott signed his rookie four-year deal Wednesday, May 18, worth $24.9 million. The deal includes a $16.3 million signing bonus. All first-round picks have a fifth-year option in their deals.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners are going to be salivating over getting Elliott with the first pick of their rookie drafts and we wouldn't be shocked to see him gone in the first two rounds of redrafts as well. Elliott is an elite talent behind a tremendous offensive line and could be in line for an exceptional rookie year.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant out for OTAs    Wed May 18, 09:16 AM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will not take part in organized team activities next week, but he hasn't suffered any setbacks.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Cowboys are wisely taking a cautious approach with their superstar WR. He has done well with the conditioning and individual work so far. Bryant is running full speed and is on pace to be ready for training camp in July.

Cowboys | No issues for Tony Romo    Thu May 12, 04:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) has not had any issues physically so far during the Cowboys' offseason program, according to head coach Jason Garrett. Garrett said that Romo has almost completely integrated back into the offseason program, adding that Romo's back is feeling well, his shoulder seems fine, he's moving around well and he's made a lot of progress. Owner Jerry Jones said there's nothing negative about where Romo is in his current state. 'Everything they hoped to accomplish technically from appraisal of surgery has gone well. Everything he's done regarding his strength, everything regarding what he's wanted to do, he's been able to do,' Jones said.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys addressed the quarterback position later in the draft, though they did try to trade back into the first to get Paxton Lynch so we know they aren't ignoring Romo's injury history. Still, Romo has no real competition and it will be a while until Dak Prescott is ready to take over, if he ever is. Romo, if healthy, should be a solid QB1 this season with the weapons he has on offense and what appears to be an great run game in the making, led by rookie Ezekiel Elliot.

Cowboys | Stephen Jones challenges Dez Bryant    Wed May 11, 10:04 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot, ankle) is still not quite 100 percent recovered from right foot and ankle surgeries in January, and he was limited to nine games in 2015. Executive vice president Stephen Jones issued a challenge Wednesday, May 11.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need Bryant to be 100% to rebound from a disappointing 2015. Bryant should be a WR1 in fantasy if he and Tony Romo are healthy.

Cowboys | Tony Romo ready to go    Tue May 10, 12:52 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) has recovered ahead of the eight weeks at the back end of his recovery timetable, and he's expected to be a full participant in offseason practices later this month. 'He's looking good,' quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson said. 'We had two practices where we've been out here on the field with the guys and he's done everything. He's throwing, he's got good velocity on all of his throws, great movement in his legs. He looks like he's re-energized because he hadn't played, you know, missed the majority of the season. So he's real energized and anxious to get going.'

Footballguys view: The Cowboys go as Romo goes. If he's healthy, the Cowboys can win a lot of games and make a deep push into the postseason. However, Romo has struggled to stay healthy for years and the team falls apart without him on the field. We'll see if a revamped rushing attack featuring first-round pick Ezekiel Elliott can help keep Romo fresh as the season goes along.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant making good progress    Mon May 9, 01:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) is making good progress in his recovery from foot surgery and has not suffered any setbacks, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: More good news about Bryant's recovery here. Garrett is hopeful that Bryant can partially participate in offseason workouts. We think the team wisely takes it easy on him so that he'll be at or near full strength for training camp.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant's recovery on track    Sun May 8, 09:25 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) played catch on the side during rookie minicamp Saturday, May 7, and head coach Jason Garrett said he continues to do well with his rehab.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Cowboys, and they'll wisely continue to ease him back onto the field. It sounds like he's going to be ready to go for the start of training camp.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott gives Dallas a scare    Sat May 7, 08:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott fell to the ground making a cut during a drill at minicamp Friday, May 6, and running backs coach Gary Brown told Elliott to slow down a bit.

Footballguys view: Whew! The Cowboys dodge a horrible situation here. Last year, teams like Jacksonville (Dante Fowler Jr.) and the Broncos (Jeff Heuerman) lost key rookies during rookie mincamp. That's why several teams are making moves to make rookie minicamp more like a rookie conference. Teams will be cautious on the field as these rookies get back to football for the first time since pro days in March.

Cowboys | Andy Jones given largest bonus by Dallas    Thu May 5, 05:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Andy Jones was given a $15,000 signing bonus, which was twice as high as any other undrafted free agent was rewarded by the Cowboys.

Footballguys view: From Jacksonville State to the NFL. Jones tested unbelievably with a 41.5 vertical jump and 11-foot-1 broad jump. If it doesn't work for him at wide receiver, the Cowboys could also try him at cornerback.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith won't go on IR    Thu May 5, 09:56 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) won't be placed on Injured Reserve because the team hopes he can play at some point this season, according to owner Jerry Jones.

Footballguys view: Jones is hoping that Smith will be ready for a playoff run. The Cowboys need to get there first, and they need a healthy Tony Romo to do that. We think Smith should be shelved for his rookie season so he can be closer to full strength in 2017. The Cowboys seem to be confident about his recovery from an ACL/LCL injury earlier this year.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott can help defense    Wed May 4, 04:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will be a valuable part of the Cowboys' offense, but defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli believes he'll help the defense, too. Marinelli said the Dallas defense will play the Dallas offense more than anyone, and guys like Elliott and WR Dez Bryant will force the defense to be physical and be better prepared for opposing offenses.

Footballguys view: A strong rushing attack is going to help the defense by staying on the field. This allows the defense to rest, and it causes an opposing offense to get cold. Elliott should be the focal point of the Cowboys offense as a rookie, and he could easily produce like a RB1 for fantasy owners. The rookie is clearly an option to take in the late first round of your fantasy draft.

Cowboys | Darius Jackson has uphill battle    Tue May 3, 05:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darius Jackson's best chance of receiving any possibility of playing time is if RB Lance Dunbar (knee) begins the regular season on the Physicall Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: He's an interesting name to monitor in deep dynasty leagues. Jackson will be behind RBs Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris on the depth chart, but he may be the odd man out when Dunbar returns.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith provides versatility    Tue May 3, 03:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) is viewed as a natural middle linebacker by the Cowboys, but they believe he can also play weakside linebacker, according to head coach Jason Garrett. 'We don't see that he has limitations at either of those spots. I think he'd be very natural at either one of them, and has the traits to do it,' Garrett said.

Footballguys view: We hope to see Smith back to full strength someday. Smith is not expected to play in 2016 as he continues to recover from nerve damage in his knee. When healthy, he can play any linebacker spot in the NFL and shine. Smith can cover, hit, rush the passer and seems to always be around the ball. He's a player we'll be watching closely in 2017.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris fine with RB addition    Mon May 2, 05:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris said he does not regret signing with the Cowboys this offseason even though the team selected RB Ezekiel Elliott in the first round of the draft.

Footballguys view: Elliott was by far the best RB in this draft class. Nothing is official, but he's got to be the starter at the beginning of the season since the Cowboys took him so high. Head coach Jason Garrett has not talked with Morris about his role on offense, but Morris is excited to compete for a job.

Cowboys | Dallas not worried about Dak Prescott    Mon May 2, 03:56 PM

Dallas Cowboys rookie QB Dak Prescott's said his DUI charge in March is something of the past and won't happen again. 'It was a mistake, but it's going to make me a better person and it already has,' Prescott said. Owner Jerry Jones said Prescott's character and judgment will help him mitigate his past mistakes. 'It's certainly something you should look at with the quarterback spot,' Jones said, 'but when you really look at it, what is impressive is that from everybody around him, the recommendations he got from everybody and the time spent with him, we don't think there's character issues here.'

Footballguys view: Many people in the scouting community insist that Prescott's DUI was not an indicator of the type of person he is. Prescott will get a chance to develop behind Tony Romo as the team's QB of the future. We like his rushing ability and see some flashes of Donovan McNabb to his game.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith familiar with team doc    Fri Apr 29, 09:31 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee), selected in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft, had knee surgery one week after the Fiesta Bowl. The team's physician, Dr. Dan Cooper, performed the operation.

Footballguys view: It explains a little why they overlooked his long recovery, but we still think this was too early and for too little immediate return.

Cowboys | Dallas goes with Jaylon Smith    Fri Apr 29, 07:23 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Notre Dame LB Jaylon Smith with the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: What a shock. Smith was a fantastic player in college but tearing an MCL and ACL puts him out of the game for likely a year and he will not have an impact for a defense desperate to have one right now. No Greg Hardy, no Randy Gregory for four games and no Smith. The Ezekiel Elliott pick was great. this one? Not so much.

Cowboys | Former RB high on Ezekiel Elliott    Fri Apr 29, 05:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is a better running back than former Cowboys RB Emmitt Smith was when he played, according to Smith.

Footballguys view: Well, that is high praise but let's slow our roll here. He needs to get on the field before he heads to Canton. We love him behind this line, but it's a tall order to compare him to Emmitt Smith, even if Smith is doing the comparison.

Cowboys | Dallas tried to land Paxton Lynch    Thu Apr 28, 11:59 PM

Denver Broncos QB Paxton Lynch was being pursued by the Dallas Cowboys, but Dallas was unable to find a trade partner to move back into the first round of the 2016 NFL draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have said they thought they had a deal done with the Seahawks and might have upped their offer if they'd had a chance. Lynch was not getting out of the first, and John Elway timed his move just right to get his guy.

Cowboys | Dallas takes Ezekiel Elliott fourth overall    Thu Apr 28, 08:37 PM

The Dallas Cowboys selected Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott with the fourth overall selection in the 2016 NFL Draft Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Elliott behind this offensive line? Start up the Rookie of the Year talk because he would be deadly even without that group. He has a shot to be an RB1 right away in fantasy.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott gaining steam with Dallas    Thu Apr 28, 07:32 PM

The case for Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott to be drafted by the Dallas Cowboys appears to be gaining steam, according to David Moore of The Dallas Morning News.

Footballguys view: We'll see if this plays out or not. There's so much smoke fire alarms are going off. They want to trade back into the late first as well, so we still think they will lean defense for the first pick.

Cowboys | Dallas down to two players?    Thu Apr 28, 02:49 PM

The Dallas Cowboys seem to be debating between Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott and Florida State CB Jalen Ramsey with their fourth overall selection in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We're hearing that there's a chance this could be smoke to try and get a team (like the Miami Dolphins) to jump up and trade for the third or fourth pick. Elliott appears to be a great running back in waiting, but it seems an odd selection for the Cowboys who could put any number of decent backs behind their offensive line and succeed. We won't put anything past Jerry Jones, but Ramsey makes more sense.

Florida State CB/S Jalen Ramsey is a player the Dallas Cowboys are targeting if he's available at No. 4 in the 2016 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: They only have to hope the Chargers don't take him at 3, or that the Chargers don't trade down to a team coveting Ramsey. If Ramsey is gone at 4, the Cowboys are expected to take Ohio State DE Joey Bosa or RB Ezekiel Elliott.

Cowboys | Dallas open to selecting Joey Bosa    Mon Apr 25, 07:17 PM

Ohio State DE Joey Bosa is still an option for the Dallas Cowboys with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft even though he was suspended for one game at Ohio State this past season. 'His character issue would not be a factor in us drafting him,' Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys should be open to selecting Bosa...he's exactly what they need! Bosa can get after the quarterback early and often. He's got a motor that just doesn't quit, and Bosa is relentless on every snap. The Cowboys have made better decisions in the first round of recent drafts. We'd applaud the selection of Bosa at 4th overall in the 2016 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Won't trade from fourth pick    Mon Apr 25, 02:36 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will stay at the No. 4 spot in the NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have seen plenty of activity in front of them in the draft with the 1st- and 2nd-overall picks already exchanging hands. They can sit tight at four and get an impact player that may not have been available otherwise. We think Joey Bosa (Ohio State) would be a great addition to their team.

Ohio State DE Joey Bosa will receive consideration if he is available when the Dallas Cowboys select with the fourth overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys could use more pressure on the outside, and that's what Bosa brings to the table. He may not be the biggest, strongest or fastest player but he has a ton of heart, hustle and intensity when it comes to playing defensive football. Bosa can get off the line quickly and he is relentless in his pursuit to the quarterback.

The Dallas Cowboys might be interested in free-agent CB Josh Norman (Panthers) after CBs Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne posted zero interceptions in the calendar year.
