Cowboys | Rolando McClain to practice Thursday    Wed Jul 23, 06:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain will practice Thursday, July 24, before traveling to a court date in Alabama Friday, July 25. McClain will return to the team Saturday, July 26, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are hoping that McClain finally plays up to his potential as a pro. He's washed out of the league with the Raiders and the Ravens, but the former standout at Alabama is getting another chance with Dallas. The Cowboys defense took a gut punch when Sean Lee was lost for the season with a knee injury earlier this year.

Cowboys | Not a make or break year for Jason Garrett    Wed Jul 23, 06:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said 2014 is not a make or break year for head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: Sure thing! Every year seems like a make-or-break year for the Cowboys head coach. If Garrett fails to get the team into the postseason, we could see Jones make a move. Garrett was a hand-picked selection by Jones, so it will be difficult for him to admit it's time to find somebody else.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray feeling great    Thu Jul 17, 03:02 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray said he is feeling great as he heads into training camp. "I'm excited. I'm feeling great," Murray said. "Excited to get out [to training camp] and get things going."

Footballguys view: Talent has never been a question mark for Murray. He can be used effectively as both a runner and receiver out of the backfield. Murray's current ADP is RB7 (2.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray praises team    Thu Jul 17, 03:00 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB DeMarco Murray thinks the team is making progress and is the most talented squad he has been a part of. "I think you can say that, yeah," Murray said Wednesday. "From the leadership we have and the young guys, I think you can say that."

Footballguys view: We'll see how the Cowboys compete in the wide open NFC East. The offense has some playmakers (like Murray), but the defense is short on talent. Losing linebacker Sean Lee for the season certainly won't help their chances in 2014.

Cowboys | Sign Dallas Walker    Thu Jul 17, 01:15 PM

The Dallas Cowboys signed TE Dallas Walker (Chargers) Thursday, July 17. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys needed another camp body at tight end. Walker is buried on the depth chart behind Jason Witten, Gavin Escobar, James Hanna and Jordan Najvar.

Cowboys | Devin Street top candidate for No. 5 WR job    Wed Jul 16, 12:10 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Devin Street is the leading candidate for No. 5 wide receiver job after he had a solid performance during offseason workouts. Street will have to adjust to the more physical style of play in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Street was a fifth-round pick by the Cowboys this year. Measuring in at 6'3", Street has the length to be a quality downfield target. He can track passes over his shoulder regularly, and this helps him beat defenders on long passes. Street needs to be more physical and add some weight to his frame. When he does that, he'll be an even better red-zone target because of his size, wingspan and leaping ability.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain could push for MLB job    Wed Jul 16, 12:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain may be able to push LB Justin Durant for the starting middle linebacker job during training camp if he is able to get in shape mentally and physically.

Cowboys | Unsure of Justin Durant's coverage skills    Wed Jul 16, 12:03 PM

The Dallas Cowboys like LB Justin Durant's ability to defend the run but are not sure about his pass coverage skills. Durant is considered the leading candidate to win the starting middle linebacker job.

Cowboys | Kyle Orton released    Tue Jul 15, 05:21 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are releasing QB Kyle Orton, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Orton just wanted to retire. The Cowboys will move on with Brandon Weeden and Caleb Hanie as the primary backups behind Tony Romo. Releasing Orton will add $1.12 million in dead money to the team's 2014 salary cap and $2.25 million to their 2015 salary cap.

Cowboys | Coach praises Bruce Carter    Tue Jul 15, 12:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys linebackers coach Matt Eberflus said LB Bruce Carter has "ramped up" his work with the position coach this offseason. 'I think he's taking steps in the right direction,' Eberflus said. 'And he's putting the work in. He's meeting with me as much as he can. Studying the tape, giving him clear and concise goals daily for practice and he's doing a good job of attaining those goals each and every day so when he does that he takes steps in the right direction to improve his fundamentals and his game.'

Cowboys | Joseph Randle has inside track for No. 3 running back    Tue Jul 15, 12:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle has the inside track to win the No. 3 running back job, and would likely take over the every-down role if something were to happen to RB DeMarco Murray.

Footballguys view: Keep this in mind when considering Lance Dunbar as a handcuff for Demarco Murray. Dunbar is the team's change-of-pace back, but if something happens to Murray then we'd likely see Randle get a chance to take over as the starter. Murray has a current ADP of RB7 (2.01) and Dunbar is coming off the board at RB49 (11.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Cody Mandell facing uphill battle    Mon Jul 14, 02:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys P Cody Mandell will have to clearly outperform P Chris Jones during training camp if he wants a chance to win the punter job. Mandell showed a strong leg during offseason workouts but was not consistent.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar healthy, set for third-down duty    Sat Jul 12, 11:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) hasn't missed a snap this offseason and should fill the third-down back role for the team this year.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Demarco Murray is an early second-round pick in most leagues (current ADP of RB7 2.01 in 12-team PPR leagues), but with his injury history (13 games missed in three seasons) there will be many fantasy owners who want to handcuff his backup to their roster later in the draft. Dunbar is that guy. His current ADP is RB49 (11.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | More on Tyrone Crawford    Fri Jul 11, 02:18 PM

Cowboys | Coach thinks defense has something to prove     Wed Jul 9, 03:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli thinks everyone on the defensive side of the ball has something to prove in 2014. "I think there's something to prove a little bit," Marinelli said. "Not something to prove from last year, but there are some guys coming here off the street with something to prove. There are some guys in contract years with something to prove. There are some guys coming out saying, 'I want to be a better player,' who have something prove."

Cowboys | Brandon Weeden not concerned with Kyle Orton situation    Tue Jul 8, 04:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Brandon Weeden is working on learning the team's offense and getting better, and is not concerned with the situation surrounding QB Kyle Orton. "I'm going to go about my business the same way regardless. I haven't met Kyle, so I can't really speak on it, but whatever he decides to do - it's kind of out of my control," Weeden said. "So what I'm worried about is, if I'm running with the twos out there, do my job to make the twos better. I want to make the team better any way I can, so it doesn't change my mindset or the way I feel about it."

Footballguys view: Owners of Dallas Cowboys skill players should take note of this. As uninspiring as Kyle Orton was last year, he is probably still a better option than Weeden if Tony Romo goes down. Orton's desire to play has seemed questionable since he turned down a chance to start elsewhere when he signed as a backup with Dallas.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams impresses coach    Tue Jul 8, 01:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams impressed wide receivers coach Derek Dooley with what he has been able to do with more work this offseason.

Footballguys view: Williams is a great sleeper wide receiver to target in the 7th-10th round range. He'll be the undisputed #2 in an offense that is likely to pass a lot in high-scoring games. Williams can add red zone and deep threat ability to a very attractive size/speed combination.

Cowboys | One safety spot already determined    Tue Jul 8, 02:21 AM

Dallas Cowboys SS Barry Church has one of the safety spots locked down going into training camp, but another spot is yet to be determined. The battle could be between FS J.J. Wilcox, FS Jakar Hamilton or FS Matt Johnson, but Johnson has battled injuries.

Footballguys view: Church might be the #1 IDP safety to target now that Sean Lee is gone for the year. The Cowboys now have little in the way of tackling machines in their linebacker corps, which means there will be a lot of messes for Church to clean up.

Cowboys | Tony Romo doing better than last offseason    Mon Jul 7, 02:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) recently said he's 'miles ahead of last year' in regards to his conditioning. Romo added that this year he'll be perfecting his play more than trying to 'hammer everything out.'

Footballguys view: Romo's back surgery was much more serious than the one he had in May 2013, but this one came in December, so time may trump the invasiveness of the surgery in this case. We aren't worried about Romo for either his own low ADP outside of the top 10 QBs, or the stability of his receivers, who might have to be catching balls from Kyle Orton or Brandon Weeden if Romo misses time this year.

Cowboys | DeVonte Holloman could push for starting job    Sun Jul 6, 11:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB DeVonte Holloman could push for the starting middle linebacker or strongside linebacker job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Holloman played the "spur" position at South Carolina, which is a safety/linebacker hybrid. He is a former safety and has the coverage ability to stay on the field for all three downs if he can win a starting spot, so deep IDP leagues owners should monitor his progress.

Cowboys | James Hanna on roster bubble?    Sun Jul 6, 03:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE James Hanna's roster spot could be in jeopardy if the team decides to keep a fullback over a fourth tight end on the 53-man roster. Hanna has 20 catches over the last two seasons.

Footballguys view: Rookie tight end Jordan Najvar (Baylor) could end up pushing Hanna off the roster. Najvar impressed our very own Cecil Lammey during the week of practice at the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year. He's a tall tight end, measuring in at 6'6" and he can be used effectively as an edge blocker. He's not much of a receiving threat, but he can use his frame to shield smaller defenders away from the ball. Najvar is a good all-purpose tight end, but his fantasy value is low--even in super deep dynasty leagues.

Cowboys | Could keep three quarterbacks on roster    Sun Jul 6, 03:49 PM

If Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton decides to return for the 2014 season, the team is expected to have three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster for the first time in several years.

Footballguys view: Keep dreaming Dallas. At this time, it seems like Orton is going to stay away from football. If he does retire or hide or whatever he's doing right now, the Cowboys would turn to Caleb Hanie and Brandon Weeden. Those two would compete to be the primary backup behind Tony Romo in 2014.

Link to story
Kyle Orton player page

Cowboys | Caleb Hanie praised by coaches    Fri Jul 4, 01:38 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Caleb Hanie got praise from head coach Jason Garrett. "He knows how to play," coach Jason Garrett said. "That's one of the things we were attracted to when we signed him in the spring. Get a guy in here who can handle the huddle and handle situations at the line of scrimmage. He's seen defenses in this league. He's started games. He's been in playoff games."

Footballguys view: We're unlikely to see Kyle Orton back with the Cowboys, so they need to find a backup to Tony Romo. Hanie can hold a clipboard, but it's not a good thing for him to be starting at any time. He'll compete with Browns castoff Brandon Weeden for the QB2 job in Dallas.

Cowboys | Justin Durant expected to be first-team MLB    Thu Jul 3, 03:11 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Justin Durant is expected to be the first-team middle linebacker when training camp begins. He took first-team snaps during minicamp and the majority of organized team activities, after LB Sean Lee (knee) was injured.

Footballguys view: The front seven is starting to take more shape and Durant is likely to fill in until Rolando McClain is ready to go (if ever). We're not sold on him as a long term solution because he's not all that used to the middle and it will take time until he is.

Cowboys | Cole Beasley working on becoming more versatile    Thu Jul 3, 03:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Cole Beasley expanded his route inventory and is going to be a much better player this year, according to wide receivers coach Derek Dooley. He worked in the slot the majority of the time during offseason workouts, but he did also spend time working outside.

Footballguys view: With Miles Austin gone, Beasley is in line for the third receiver position among the wide receivers, though he would be fourth in line for targets after Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Jason Witten. He might have some fantasy value but right now it's too unclear. Keep him on a deep roster if you have room but for the most part just keep him in mind.

Cowboys | Demarcus Lawrence learning in practice    Thu Jul 3, 01:13 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Demarcus Lawrence is learning from having to practice against pro-bowl OT Tyron Smith. "I feel like it's helping me," Lawrence said. "If you're going against the best, you ain't got no choice but to pick up your game and become the best. I feel like he's helping me out a lot, and he's getting me ready for the season."

Footballguys view: The Cowboys really need Lawrence to step up as their front seven has some massive injury issues. He's no DeMarcus Ware, but he has a lot of upside and should be a solid addition to a defense in need of help.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain may not cost anything     Wed Jul 2, 02:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain, who was recently acquired from the Baltimore Ravens, could end up costing the team nothing. According to sources, if McClain is not on the team's 46-man roster for three games or 53-man roster for five games this season, Baltimore will not receive any compensation. The deal currently mandates that Dallas gives its 2016 seventh-round pick to Baltimore if McClain does meet those criteria. Additionally, if McClain plays half of the defensive snaps this year, the Ravens will receive the Cowboys' 2015 sixth-round pick and the Cowboys will receive Baltimore's 2015 seventh-round pick. McClain did not receive any guaranteed money in his one-year contract with the Cowboys.

Cowboys | Sean Lee placed on IR    Tue Jul 1, 04:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Sean Lee (knee) was officially placed on Injured Reserve Tuesday, July 1.

Footballguys view: This move was expected ever since Lee injured his knee in minicamp. The team traded for Rolondo McClain on Tuesday in a desperate effort to find more help at inside linebacker. McClain will compete with Justin Durant for the top spot on the depth chart. Lee will have to wait until training camp of 2015 to show what he can do after yet another major injury.

Cowboys | Acquire Rolando McClain    Tue Jul 1, 04:34 PM

The Dallas Cowboys acquired LB Rolando McClain (Ravens) from the Baltimore Ravens Tuesday, July 1.

Footballguys view: The team is desperate, and they wanted to add another body to compete at middle linebacker since Sean Lee was lost for the year with a knee injury earlier this offseason. McClain has retired twice in the last year or so, and he's gone down as one of the biggest first-round busts in recent history. If healthy and motivated (two gigantic ifs), McClain could compete for the starting job in the middle with Justin Durant.

Cowboys | Tony Romo changes offseason routine    Mon Jun 30, 08:28 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (back) said he hasn't played golf since his first of two back operations in April 2013.

Footballguys view: Some players have to sacrifice riding motorcycles while they're playing, others have to give up sports like basketball or golf. It's wise for Romo to take care of his body as much as possible. The team has committed to him long term, and they're looking for their loyalty to pay off. He'll have plenty of time to smack whitey after he retires.
