Cowboys | Lucky Whitehead's spot in danger?    Fri Jun 23, 11:43 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Lucky Whitehead could lose his roster spot if WR Ryan Switzer shows he is capable of being the primary return man, according to David Moore of the Dallas Morning News.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott to catch more passes?    Thu Jun 22, 10:36 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott will 'absolutely' be used more in the passing game this season, according to running backs coach Gary Brown.

Footballguys view: This report is music to the ears of Elliott's fantasy owners. Elliott was second in rushing/receiving yards last year with 1,994 yards -- but most of it was done on the ground (1,631 yards). Going over 2,000 combined yards seems like a given, and getting used more as a receiver could make him the top fantasy player to own in 2017. His 11.34 yards per catch ranked 2nd in the NFL last year (1st was Spencer Ware, 13.55) for running backs.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris still likely to go    Tue Jun 20, 09:52 AM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris is still likely to be moved or cut before the 53-man roster is finalized, in the opinion of beat writer Jon Machota.

Footballguys view: Morris doesn't play special teams and that could cost him his roster spot. The Cowboys could use Darren McFadden as the primary backup behind Ezekiel Elliott. Morris may not be what he used to be, but there would be more than a few teams interested in his services if he hit the open market.

Cowboys | Dallas continues endorsing Kellen Moore    Sun Jun 18, 12:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Kellen Moore's understanding of the offense and ability to move the chains were on display at times during last week's three-day minicamp, and his accuracy continues to be a strong point as well.

Footballguys view: Kellen Moore is the likely backup to Dak Prescott in 2017. He's facing competition from guys like rookie Cooper Rush and recently added free agent Zac Dysert. Moore is likely the winner of the competition, but the Dallas offense would not be as exciting if he was forced into the lineup due to an injury to Prescott. We don't see dynasty value in Moore, and there are several other backups we'd rather stash in that format.

Cowboys | Charles Tapper loses weight    Sat Jun 17, 08:26 AM

Dallas Cowboys DE Charles Tapper has lost nearly 20 pounds since the end of last season and is down to 11 percent body fat from 13 percent in an attempt to increase his agility.

Footballguys view: Defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli wants Tapper to shift from an interior spot on the defensive line to a spot where he lines up on the outside shoulder of the tackle. A fourth-round pick out of Oklahoma in 2016, Tapper missed his entire rookie season due to injury. With his back problems behind him, Tapper is likely to be a key piece of the Cowboys rotation up front.

Cowboys | Rod Smith ahead of Alfred Morris?    Fri Jun 16, 02:19 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Rod Smith worked ahead of RB Alfred Morris during minicamp, according to ESPN's Todd Archer. Unlike Morris, Smith has the versatility to play fullback and can also help on special teams.

Footballguys view: Morris may not be with the Cowboys in 2017. There was already talk about the team potentially trading or releasing him. The emergence of Smith could mean Morris is playing elsewhere when the regular season gets here.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott to avoid Sophomore slump?    Thu Jun 15, 01:43 PM

Jori Epstein of the Dallas Morning News reports that Cowboys WR Cole Beasley doesn't believe second-year QB Dak Prescott will suffer a sophomore slump in 2017. "He's one of the hardest-working guys I've seen at the quarterback position in a long time in a lot of years playing," Beasley said. "His approach and his mindset will control that. ... He's the type of guy who's going to grind no matter and continue to get better no matter how good he gets."

Footballguys view: His situation is still about as good as you can ask for, with an elite line, a tremendous second year running back and a great receiving corps. We think he may see a bit of a slump, but certainly not a large one, and he's projecting an ADP of 76 overall and the tenth quarterback taken off the board.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott learns off-field lesson, stays home more    Thu Jun 15, 01:29 PM

According to Clarence Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram, Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is staying at home more now after an off-field incident in March drew scrutiny around the country. Elliott said it's a painful and needed lesson to learn, considering how fleeting an NFL career can be if you continue to make mistakes. "I think it's just life," said Elliott, who was wearing a Stetson hat when he met with the media Wednesday. "You learn from your mistakes, and if you don't, it can be brutal. So it's just part of life."

Footballguys view: It's a good thing to learn, especially given the outcome hasn't been as bad as it could have been. In today's camera-phone/24-7 news world, privacy for athletes isn't easy to come by and mistakes/bad choices are amplified. Staying home a little more is a good thing, and will keep him from being distracted or a distraction himself. Elliott is going as one of the top two or three players in early drafts, so if you are paying the price for him, you definitely want him focused.

Cowboys | Rico Gathers remains sidelined    Wed Jun 14, 04:55 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers (illness) missed his second straight day of practice Wednesday, June 14, because of an illness.

Footballguys view: Gathers, a sixth-round pick in 2016, never played college football but was a college basketball player at Baylor. He's competing as a developmental player behind Jason Witten. Fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues should be monitoring his progress.

Cowboys | Cole Beasley's injury has lingered    Wed Jun 14, 03:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Cole Beasley (hamstring) said he has been dealing with his hamstring injury since Week 10 of the 2016 season. He said he would be able to play in a game now if needed and believes rest will heal the injury.

Footballguys view: Beasley is super quick through the route tree and will rest to get right. Hamstring injuries can linger if not treated properly. We will see him out there for training camp.

Cowboys | Lance Lenoir signs with Dallas    Tue Jun 13, 12:07 PM

Undrafted free-agent WR Lance Lenoir (Western Illinois) signed a three-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, June 13. TE M.J. McFarland was waived.

Footballguys view: Lenoir set school and conference records during his college career for the Leathernecks. He's coming from FCS competition level and will face a giant leap at the pro level. Lenoir was invited to the Bears rookie minicamp after he went undrafted, but he left without a contract. He can make difficult catches above his head, and Lenoir (6'0" 210 pounds) can be used as a kick returner as well. Lenoir is likely headed for the team's practice squad in 2017 if he can impress.

Cowboys | Ryan Switzer working with Dez Bryant    Thu Jun 8, 10:13 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Ryan Switzer said WR Dez Bryant is his go-to guy for advice, and he is trying to emulate Bryant's ability to pull down contested catches.

Footballguys view: Switzer plays more like Wes Welker than he does Bryant, but we appreciate the rookie's willingness to learn. As a small receiver, Switzer has a small catch radius and does struggle at times with contested catches. Exactly 50 percent of Switzer's 96 catches last year went for first downs or touchdowns. The kid can move the chains and get open with separation. The rookie from North Carolina is buried on the depth chart, but we appreciate his value in dynasty leagues.

Cowboys | Ryan Nassib working out for Cowboys    Thu Jun 8, 09:34 AM

Free-agent QB Ryan Nassib (Giants) is working out for the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, June 8.

Footballguys view: Nassib showed flashes in his time with the Giants, but not consistently enough for the staff. He could be as solid backup to Dak Prescott and we like the chances he improves in Jason Garrett's offense.

Cowboys | Rico Gathers misses practice    Wed Jun 7, 07:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers (illness) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 7, because of an illness.

Footballguys view: Gathers has been an OTA star and could pass Geoff Swaim and James Hanna on the depth chart. The basketball convert has been physically dominant in practices and could become Jason Witten's long term replacement with more experience. He's one to watch in deep dynasty leagues.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith takes part in some drills    Wed Jun 7, 03:13 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) participated in all of the individual drills during practice Wednesday, June 7. He also participated in some special team drills but sat out team drills.

Footballguys view: Smith looked good and could be the team's every down middle linebacker this year if everything goes well. He is still taking some practices off, which is probably a precaution, but could also mean that he's not as close as the workouts suggest. Either way, this is all very positive for the Cowboys, who might have gotten a top 10 player in the second round last year.

Cowboys | Chaz Green working at LG    Wed Jun 7, 03:04 PM

Dallas Cowboys OT Chaz Green worked with the first-team offense at left guard during practice Wednesday, June 7. Green said the team asked him about moving to guard last week.

Footballguys view: La'el Collins will take over at right tackle with Doug Free's retirement. Green can provide some depth at tackle while also vying for a starting guard spot. The Cowboys also lost top run-blocking guard Ronald Leary to Denver in free agency, opening up the spot that Green will possibly fill. The Cowboys remain one of the top lines in the league, but their depth and quality took a hit this offseason.

Cowboys | Daryl Washington hopes to join Cowboys    Wed Jun 7, 02:25 PM

Free-agent LB Daryl Washington (Cardinals) said he would like to sign with the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: Washington has been out of the league for three years, but he's been reinstated by the NFL and is ready to go. The Cowboys need help on the defensive side of the ball, and Washington was an effective starter (and a Pro Bowl player) -- although it was years ago -- for the Cardinals. Dallas has no issue taking chances on players with baggage.

Cowboys | Mark Nzeocha had knee procedure    Wed Jun 7, 01:11 PM

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith limited    Wed Jun 7, 11:47 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) will be limited Wednesday, June 7, but he'll do some football movements. He continues to progress.

Footballguys view: Most reports about Smith have been positive this offseason, and the team remains optimistic he can play for them this year. He still has a ways to go, and we'll know more about his availability for the regular season when training camp rolls around.

Cowboys | Zac Dysert claimed by Dallas    Mon Jun 5, 06:33 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Zac Dysert was claimed off waivers by the Dallas Cowboys Monday, June 5. The Cowboys also waived QB Austin Appleby.

Footballguys view: Dysert has a strong arm - no control - and the athleticism to keep plays alive. He's serving as the camp arm for the Cowboys behind starter Dak Prescott and primary backup Kellen Moore.

Cowboys | Zack Martin could receive extension    Sun Jun 4, 05:20 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are expected to talk with OG Zack Martin about a contract extension later in the offseason.

Footballguys view: With two All-Pro seasons in just three years as a pro, Martin is clearly one of the best in the game at his position and he should be compensated as such. The Cowboys exercised his fifth-year option earlier this year, and he's under contract for two more seasons. That's not going to stop the team from working out an extension sometime before the start of the regular season. OverTheCap.com lists the Cowboys as having around $16.9 million in cap space at this time.

Cowboys | Dallas not looking at Sheldon Richardson    Sun Jun 4, 05:19 PM

New York Jets DE Sheldon Richardson is not a trade target for the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys were one of two teams (Washington was the other) that the Jets had discussions with about Richardson. The Jets want to trade him away as 2017 is Richardson's final year of his contract, but teams don't want to pay him the fully guaranteed $8.1 million he's due in 2017. Team insiders believe there's a 50/50 chance Richardson gets dealt before the start of the regular season.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott case could be over soon     Thu Jun 1, 04:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott's domestic violence case could be resolved soon as phone records and other documents were recently turned over to investigators, according to sources. Closure to the case could come before the regular season commences, but the NFL has simply stated that its investigation is ongoing.

Footballguys view: It's curious to note this continuing investigation as Elliott was not charged. All signs point to the second-year star RB getting through this without a suspension.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant feeling healthy    Thu Jun 1, 12:13 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant said the way that he's feeling right now has led him to believe that he's 'not dealing with really anything.' He added: 'I feel damn good. I know once I'm 100 (percent), I'm hard to deal with. That confidence is just steady expanding. I'll tell you this, I've never been (more) ready for training camp.'

Footballguys view: Bryant wasn't as dominant in 2016 as he has been in the past. Health is definitely an issue, and that plus his 52 percent catch rate makes him a shaky number one wide receiver for fantasy. If he can stay healthy, he'll be very good, but he just hasn't over the last two years as he has missed ten games. With a full 16-game season, Bryant could easily finish as a top-5 fantasy WR again.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott back at practice    Wed May 31, 02:32 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (head) was back at OTAs Tuesday, May 30, after he was held out of practice last week following a car accident on May 21.

Footballguys view: Cowboys RB coach Gary Brown insisted that Elliott did not have a concussion as a result of this car wreck. The team was just being cautious with their superstar back last week, and now he's back.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith won't go consecutive days    Mon May 29, 10:56 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) won't practice consecutive days in organized team activities, minicamp or training camp.

Footballguys view: Smith is still coming back from the knee injury that cost him all of his rookie season in 2016. The Cowboys are just trying to manage this injury and see if he can be ready for training camp and ...more importantly... week 1 of the regular season.

Cowboys | Dallas not looking at Darrelle Revis    Sun May 28, 06:05 PM

Free-agent CB Darrelle Revis (Jets) is not an option for Dallas Cowboys, according to sources inside the organization.

Footballguys view: Just last week, ESPN New York reported there was no market for Revis because of last year's significant decline and whispers about his commitment. That comes from Rich Cimini, one of the most plugged in writers in all of football. Revis may be able to sign with somebody before training camp, but it will be for a deal that hovers near veteran minimum.

Cowboys | Ryan Switzer to have 'significant' role    Fri May 26, 02:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys fourth-round pick WR Ryan Switzer is getting first-team reps in the slot while WR Cole Beasley is dealing hamstring soreness. However, while head coach Jason Garrett has made it clear while Switzer was drafted in part for his ability to back up Beasley, the Cowboys are working on packages for both to be on the field at the same time to take advantage of mismatches.

Footballguys view: Switzer plays a lot like Wes Welker. He's small but lightning fast and electric with the ball in his hands. Switzer has great foot frequency and can change direction on a dime without losing speed. He does have a small catch radius so passes need to be on point for him to be properly utilized as a receiver.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott taking the next step    Wed May 24, 11:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has emerged as a more vocal leader entering his second season, and quarterbacks coach Wade Wilson recently said he's seen nothing from Prescott that should worry anyone about the reigning rookie of the year taking his foot off the gas.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys kept things somewhat simple for Prescott last year, and he'll have to expand what he does this year. They'll still hammer the ball with Ezekiel Elliott and set up play action passing with Prescott. If he's well protected, Prescott can produce consistently at QB1 levels each week.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith feels 'amazing'    Wed May 24, 09:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) claims he can able to do everything that's been asked of him by the Cowboys coaching and training staffs. He also told reporters there's nothing he was able to do before his knee injury that he can't do now.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are optimistic about Smith's recovery, and he believes that he'll be ready for the season opener against the Giants. Smith had top-10 talent, but he fell to the second round of the 2016 NFL draft due to a serious knee injury suffered in Notre Dame's bowl game. He missed his entire rookie year as he recovered from the injury and the team monitored the nerves in his leg. As we get closer to training camp, we'll know more about where Smith is at in his recovery.

Cowboys | Cole Beasley dealing with injury    Wed May 24, 04:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Cole Beasley (hamstring) has not been able to participate in organized team activities this week because of a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not given enough to heal. Beasley is going to get work as the team's no3 WR again this year. He's a WR5 for fantasy owners with a current ADP of WR52 (12.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (head) is expected to participate in organized team activities next week, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Cowboys | Taco Charlton works with starter    Wed May 24, 03:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Taco Charlton worked with the first-team defense at right defensive end during organized team activities Wednesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. Charlton was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL draft with the idea that he could make an immediate impact as a pass rusher. At 6'6" 277 pounds, Charlton has the length and the strength to be a handful on the edge.

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott (head) will not participate in OTAs after he suffered a head injury as a passenger in a minor car accident Sunday, May 21.

Cowboys | Dallas eyeing Daryl Washington?    Tue May 23, 07:29 PM

Free-agent LB Daryl Washington (Cardinals) has drawn interest from the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys would have to determine whether or not Washington is worth the risk. Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott remains under investigation for an incident he was allegedly part of in July, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: No charges were filed in this incident by authorities, so it's difficult to understand what the league is waiting on. Whenever they make a decision, we'd be surprised if any suspension came of this.

Cowboys | Zack Martin could receive extension soon    Sat May 20, 06:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys OG Zack Martin is expected to receive a contract extension in late July or early August if the team follows the same script it did to lock up C Travis Frederick and OT Tyron Smith in recent years, according to Dallas Morning News' Jon Machota.

Footballguys view: A first-round pick in 2014, Martin had his fifth-year option picked up by the Cowboys earlier this year. That keeps him with a star on his helmet for the next two years. However, the team would be wise to get Martin done before he hits the open market. Their line is the best in the league, and Martin is a key reason why.

Footballguys view: Awuzie can make an immediate impact for the Cowboys defense. He's smart, always finds a way to the ball and can disrupt the play at the point of the catch. Awuzie is versatile, so expect the Cowboys to line him up in different spots as a rookie.

Dallas Cowboys TE James Hanna (knee) will likely miss most of OTAs and June minicamp but should be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: He's been on the mend since late last year when he had surgery on his injured knee. Hanna is under contract through 2018 and a blocking tight end for the Cowboys when he's healthy. He was limited to just four games in 2016.

Cowboys | Geoff Swaim still on the mend    Sat May 13, 09:37 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Geoff Swaim (foot) won't see much time during OTAs or June minicamp but should be ready for the start of training camp, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: Swaim was injured in an informal players workout at the facility earlier this year and required foot surgery to repair the damage. A blocking tight end only, Swaim missed the last seven games of 2016 because of a torn pectoral tendon (which required surgery), and he also had knee surgery last season.

Cowboys | Alfred Morris on the bubble?    Fri May 12, 11:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Alfred Morris' inability to play special teams likely places him on the roster bubble. 'You'd love for your third back, in a perfect world, to be a contributor on special teams,' Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones said.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have great insurance behind Ezekiel Elliot with Morris, but that doesn't guarantee him a spot on the 53-man roster. Morris would likely be scooped up quickly if he gets to the open market.

Cowboys | Rico Gathers tough to defend    Fri May 12, 10:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers is 'always an option' in the passing game because of his big catch radius, according to offensive coordinator Scott Linehan.

Footballguys view: Jason Witten can't play forever, so Gathers is a deep dynasty prospect we're adding feverishly or hanging onto tightly. The former basketball star at Baylor has the size (6'6") and strength to be a factor...and a fantasy asset...for the Cowboys in the future.
