Cowboys | Rico Gathers handed one-game ban    Fri Jun 14, 04:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Rico Gathers was suspended one game for violating the league's substance abuse policy Friday, June 14.

Footballguys view: Gathers had basketball background tight end fantasy upside when he came into the league, but the Cowboys remolded him into a tackle-sized player and his movement skills suffered for it. This is third Cowboys player suspended this offseason after Randy Gregory and David Irving were placed on indefinite suspensions.

Cowboys | Randall Cobb likely to be big part of offense    Fri Jun 14, 02:27 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Randall Cobb has reportedly formed 'a fast connection' with QB Dak Prescott, and there is 'no question' Cobb will be a 'huge addition to the offense' in 2019.

Footballguys view: Cobb should push Allen Hurns to the bench. If he can stay at full speed, Cobb has a shot at fantasy relevance and should be on our early season waiver wire watch list, but Cobb has rarely stayed at full speed for long since signing his second contract with Green Bay.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott's agent proposes $34M annual deal    Fri Jun 14, 01:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and his agent Todd France/CAA have extended a contract proposal to the team that would have Prescott earning close to $34 million annually, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys just need to face reality and pay Prescott his market value to end any possibility of drama or hurt feelings from this situation.

Cowboys | Noah Brown had knee surgery    Thu Jun 13, 12:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Noah Brown (knee) had knee surgery last week but is expected to be ready by the start of training camp, according to a report Thursday, June 13.

Footballguys view: We'll be monitoring Brown's progress but only in super deep dynasty formats. The 2017 seventh-round pick out of Ohio State has only nine catches for 87 yards in two seasons with the Cowboys.

Cowboys | Connor McGovern agrees to terms    Wed Jun 12, 02:07 PM

Dallas Cowboys third-round draft choice OG Connor X. McGovern agreed to terms on a four-year deal with the Cowboys Wednesday, June 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: McGovern is a road grader as a run blocker and a work in progress as a pass protector. He's got the strength and intimidating mindset to push guys around in the middle of the line. McGovern, a third-round pick out of Penn State, has been missing time in OTAs and minicamp due to a chest injury. When healthy, McGovern is going to push for a starting job as a rookie.

Cowboys | PUP list likely for DeMarcus Lawrence    Tue Jun 11, 07:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (shoulder) likely will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. The team believes Lawrence will be ready for Week 1.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Lawrence has been recovering from shoulder surgery and there's a chance he is ready for the start of the regular season. If there are any snags in his recovery, Lawrence might not be able to get onto the field until September or October. We'll know more about Lawrence's recovery in the month of August.

Cowboys | Byron Jones likely to be PUP candidate    Tue Jun 11, 07:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Byron Jones (hip) likely will start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list but hopes to be on the field at some point during camp. The Cowboys are confident that Jones will be ready for Week 1.

Cowboys | Allen Hurns to be limited    Tue Jun 11, 07:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Allen Hurns (ankle) will participate in individual drills during minicamp this week.

Footballguys view: It's a good sign for Hurns as he recovers from the ankle injury that knocked him out of the Wild Card Round last year. We should see him out there as a full participant at some time during training camp.

Cowboys | Connor McGovern to miss minicamp    Tue Jun 11, 07:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys OG Connor X. McGovern (pectoral) will not participate in the minicamp this week because of a pectoral strain. Head coach Jason Garrett said McGovern will not need surgery.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott not close in extension talks    Sat Jun 8, 04:24 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has been talking to the Cowboys about a contract extension, but the two sides are not close at this point.

Footballguys view: Prescott is not worried about the negotiations and knows something will get done. Entering the final year of his rookie contract, reports have indicated the Cowboys have no problem paying him around $30 million annually. They may not be close at this point, but things have a way of getting done quickly when both sides feel there is a deadline. That might be the start of training camp or the start of the regular season in Prescott's case.

Cowboys | Leighton Vander Esch close to return    Mon Jun 3, 02:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Leighton Vander Esch (pelvis) is expected to go through some limited work throughout the week for the first time this spring as the team starts its final week of organized team activities, according to ESPN's Todd Archer.

Footballguys view: The pelvic injury has been keeping the talented young linebacker on the sidelines this offseason. All reports indicate he should be full go by the time training camp gets here.

Cowboys | Allen Hurns likely back during camp    Sun May 26, 05:09 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Allen Hurns (ankle, leg) should return to the practice field at some point during training camp. Head coach Jason Garrett said Hurns has made good progress in his rehab.

Footballguys view: Hurns was injured in the Cowboys Wild Card Round victory over the Seahawks back in January. He's been on the road to recovery ever since and has been held out of OTAs as expected and planned. We'll see Hurns compete with free agent addition Randall Cobb for the No. 3 WR spot during training camp.

Cowboys | Jason Witten still a weapon    Fri May 24, 09:47 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten 'hasn't lost a step' after taking a year off, according to QB Dak Prescott. 'I guess the trick is to take a year off because he's definitely gotten better, stronger and faster,' Prescott said.

Footballguys view: Witten could be the #2 most targeted receiver for the Cowboys and tap the brakes on second-year receiver Michael Gallup's growth as a fantasy factor. He'll be a fringe TE1 in PPR leagues, but could surprise and overachieve building on a lot of pre-existing chemistry with his quarterback.

Cowboys | Jon'Vea Johnson off to strong start    Fri May 24, 09:13 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Jon'Vea Johnson has looked 'impressive catching the ball' and has been one of the standout rookies to start OTAs, according to Bryan Broaddus of DallasCowboys.com.

Footballguys view: Johnson ran a 4.38 40 and posted a 10'8" broad jump at his pro day, and the Cowboys had him in for an official 30 predraft visit, so he was on their radar. He was behind Steelers third round pick Diontae Johnson and Chiefs UDFA Cody Thompson at Toledo, so it makes sense that he would be under the draft radar.

Cowboys | Tony Pollard making an impression    Fri May 24, 09:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Tony Pollard has shown 'exceptional burst and quickness through the hole' for a back his size during OTAs, according to Rob Phillips of DallasCowboys.com.

Footballguys view: Seventh-round pick Mike Weber is dealing with a knee injury. Pollard could seize the backup job in addition to the "weapon" wide receiver/running back slash role that he was drafted in the fourth round to play. His dynasty value is ticking up after being stuck behind Rams third rounder pick Darrell Henderson at Memphis.

Cowboys | Backup QB gig up for grabs in Dallas    Fri May 24, 08:58 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Mike White and QB Cooper Rush both have a 'clean slate' in the competition for the backup quarterback spot, according to quarterbacks coach Jon Kitna.

Footballguys view: White and Rush would both be upgrades at backup for some teams, so it will be interesting to see if the team fields offers for whoever ends up at #3. Assuming they sign Dak Prescott to a long term deal, they won't need both, but either could be coveted elsewhere.

Cowboys | Several players to miss workouts    Fri May 24, 07:52 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (shoulder), CB Byron Jones (hip), DE Christian Covington (calf), DE Taco Charlton (ankle, shoulder) and WR Allen Hurns (ankle) will not participate in the offseason workouts because of injuries.

Footballguys view: Of these, Charlton is probably the most worrisome, as the team has gotten little contributions from him in the first two years of his rookie deal after going in the first round in 2017. Hurns could fall behind Randall Cobb for slot duties while he is out if Cobb develops early chemistry with Dak Prescott.

Cowboys | Jerry Jones: Ezekiel Elliott penalty unlikely    Fri May 24, 01:28 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is unlikely to face any league discipline over his involvement in a May 19 incident at a Las Vegas music festival, in the opinion of team owner Jerry Jones.

Footballguys view: Elliott has what was described as a minor altercation with a security guard at a music festival. We think nothing comes of this latest incident with Elliott and don't think it will negatively impact his ongoing contract negotiations with the Cowboys. Elliott is set to get a contract that makes him the highest paid running back in NFL history.

Cowboys | Tavon Austin out for OTAs    Thu May 23, 08:52 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Tavon Austin (undisclosed) will not participate in OTAs.

Footballguys view: Austin will be the return man for the Cowboys this year, and maybe he has a slightly larger role on offense. In 2018, Austin only had eight catches for 140 yards and two receiving touchdowns. He also kicked in another six rushes for 55 yards. Despite the team talking about using him more last year that never materialized. We're actually surprised they brought him back on a one-year deal.

Cowboys | Mike Weber resumes practicing    Thu May 23, 02:25 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Mike Weber (knee) returned to practice Wednesday, May 22, after hurting his knee at rookie minicamp earlier this month, taking part in both individual and team drills this week.

Footballguys view: Weber was a seventh-round pick out of Ohio State in the 2019 NFL draft. The Cowboys are going to see if Weber can earn a spot on the depth chart behind fellow Buckeye Ezekiel Elliott. Weber is your classic banger at 5'11" 211 pounds. He's a determined runner with little nuance to his game. Weber is going to hard charge to and through the line but has a hard time creating his own space with moves. He can be used as a relief-valve receiver out of the backfield but needs to improve his pass-protection ability.

Cowboys | No offer for Ezekiel Elliott yet    Wed May 22, 05:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott has not received a contract extension offer at this point, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have some money to shell out in the near future. Elliott, QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper are all in line for new deals. There are others but those are the 'big 3' that need to be kept...for a good price. According to OverTheCap.com, the Cowboys currently have around $19 million in effective cap space.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott makes counter proposal    Wed May 22, 04:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott said his representatives have made a counter proposal after receiving an initial contract offer from the Cowboys. Prescott said he is not sure how close the two sides are at this point.

Footballguys view: They are going back and forth about a new deal and that's a good sign. We should see Prescott get a big-money deal in the near future. A fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Prescott has impressed so much that the Cowboys are likely to pay him around $30 million annually. Fantasy GMs are taking Prescott off the board at QB20 (12.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | No progress in Amari Cooper contract talks    Mon May 20, 07:37 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper is at a stalemate in contract extension talks with the Cowboys, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have some big-money deals coming up with guys like Cooper, QB Dak Prescott and RB Ezekiel Elliott. There is buzz that Cooper wants to best the top WR salary (annually) that Odell Beckham Jr. currently makes at $18MM per year. Cooper made an instant impact for the Cowboys last year after they traded the Raiders for him and they'll get some deal done...no matter how painful that price tag might be.

Cowboys | Jalen Guyton catching on quickly    Sun May 19, 09:53 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Jalen Guyton was able to pick up routes quickly during rookie minicamp, according to Bryan Broaddus of DallasCowboys.com, and Broaddus said there was 'a lot of power' in the way Guyton moved in and out of cuts.

Cowboys | Jordan Chunn's spot in jeopardy    Sun May 19, 09:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Jordan Chunn looked 'a little heavy' during rookie minicamp, according to Bryan Broaddus of DallasCowboys.com, and Broaddus believes Chunn has no margin for error if he wants to make the roster or practice squad.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith extension talks begin    Sat May 18, 11:46 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith has begun talks with the team on a contract extension, according to sources.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Smith is in the final year of his rookie contract. The Cowboys have a lot of big contract to look at with guys like QB Dak Prescott and WR Amari Cooper coming up. Smith won't get a huge contract and may have to take a team-friendly deal.

Cowboys | No surgery for Mike Weber    Wed May 15, 02:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Mike Weber (knee) will not undergo knee surgery at this point. The team hopes rest and rehab will help Weber recover but is not ruling out surgery later this offseason.

Footballguys view: The rookie from Ohio State went down in practice over the weekend. The team will monitor his recovery and hope that rest can heal him properly. Weber is an instinctive runner who doesn't stand out with speed or power. When healthy, we'll see the Cowboys 2019 seventh-round pick compete with guys like Tony Pollard and Darius Jackson to establish the pecking order behind starter Ezekiel Elliott.

Link to story

Cowboys | Taco Charlton has surgery    Wed May 15, 10:31 AM

Dallas Cowboys DE Taco Charlton (ankle) had a minor arthroscopic surgery on his ankle recently, and he should be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: It's a minor procedure as scopes are, but this is still a concern since Charlton hasn't been able to stay healthy or produce at a high level in two seasons with the Cowboys. Already recovering from shoulder surgery (limited to 11 games last season), Charlton has only 4.0 sacks in his pro career.

Cowboys | Mike Weber to undergo MRI    Sat May 11, 04:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Mike Weber (knee) did not participate in the afternoon practice Saturday, May 11, because of a knee injury and is scheduled to undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the injury.

Footballguys view: Weber could be the first injury casualty of the rookie class. He had a chance to be the primary backup to fellow Buckeye Ezekiel Elliott. Fourth-round Tony Pollard has WR/RB versatility, but he could get more work at running back if Weber's injury is serious, in addition to the Cowboys becoming running back buyers in the third wave of free agency.

Cowboys | Dallas signs seven draft picks    Fri May 10, 05:27 PM

Dallas Cowboys second-round draft choice DT Trysten Hill, fourth-round draft choice RB Tony Pollard, fifth-round draft choice DE Joe Jackson, fifth-round draft choice CB Michael Jackson, sixth-round draft choice S Donovan Wilson, seventh-round draft choice RB Mike Weber and seventh-round draft choice DE Jalen Jelks signed four-year contracts with the Cowboys Friday, May 10. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Pollard is a utility offensive weapon who can play receiver and running back, while Weber is more of a downhill runner who might be the primary backup to Ezekiel Elliott. We'll watch how this sorts out to have our Elliott injury upside list in order.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott receives contract offer    Wed May 8, 02:44 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott has received an initial contact extension offer from the Cowboys, and the team is waiting for his counter offer, according to sources. The two sides are not believed to be close to any deal.

Footballguys view: It's part of the negotiation process. The Cowboys are trying to pay him a fair price but not overpay him. Prescott is trying to make the most money possible. The number of $30 million annually has been tossed out there and could be around where Prescott's final number lands. Either way, we don't see Prescott's contract situation going on for too long. They're trying to hammer out the numbers now and should be able to come to an agreement.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott may approach $30M annually    Tue May 7, 12:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott and the team are reportedly working toward a contract extension that will approach $30 million annually, if not more, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That sounds about right and most everyone (including the Cowboys) should have been expecting the number to be around $30 million annually. Prescott is in the final year of his rookie contract and we expect the Cowboys to get a deal done sometime before the start of the regular season. Fantasy GMs are currently taking Prescott off the board at QB23 (14.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | New deal for Dak Prescott by Week 1?    Sat May 4, 05:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott hopefully will sign a contract extension with the Cowboys before the start of the 2019 regular season, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: Prescott was a fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft so there is no fifth-year option for the young passer. Instead, he's in the final year of his rookie contract in 2019. His new deal won't make him the highest paid quarterback in the NFL, but Prescott should get quite the raise in the near future.

Cowboys | Dallas has timetable for Amari Cooper deal    Sat May 4, 05:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Amari Cooper hopefully will sign a contract extension with the Cowboys before the start of the 2019 regular season, according to owner/general manager Jerry Jones and executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys gave up a first-round pick for Cooper, so they're likely to extend him at some point this offseason. Cooper is heading into the final year of his rookie deal in 2019.

Cowboys | No timetable for Ezekiel Elliott deal    Sat May 4, 05:11 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott is a candidate for a contract extension, but executive vice president Stephen Jones said there is no timetable for an agreement.

Footballguys view: Prescott is likely third in line for the Cowboys when it comes to contract extensions. They picked up his fifth-year option and have him under team control through the 2020 season. We might see Elliott have to wait until next offseason for a new deal.
