Cowboys | Benardrick McKinney works out    Sat Apr 25, 02:36 AM

Mississippi State LB Benardrick McKinney worked out for the Dallas Cowboys on Friday, April 24.

Footballguys view: McKinney is one of the best inside linebackers in this draft. He arrives at the ball-carrier with natural violence, and he does a good job of sniffing out plays as they unfold. He's got to improve his coverage ability if he wants to be a three-down player in the NFL.

Cowboys | Dallas not pursuing Adrian Peterson?    Thu Apr 23, 05:18 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson may not be in the Dallas Cowboys' plans after all, according Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports. Robinson said the Cowboys have not spoken to the Vikings regarding Peterson.

Footballguys view: It looks like the Cowboys are going to add a feature back through the draft. They'll be in the market for guys like Todd Gurley (Georgia) or Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin) in the first round of the draft. They added Darren McFadden in free agency earlier this year, but he's not the answer as a lead back.

Cowboys | DAL to meet with Dorial Green-Beckham    Wed Apr 22, 01:21 PM

Oklahoma WR Dorial Green-Beckham is scheduled to meet with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, April 22, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Green-Beckham in the first round seems like a real possibility. While the Cowboys don't have wide receiver atop their list of needs, they were successful managing Dez Bryant and helping him flourish, so there's something to the idea that perhaps they would be a good landing spot for Green-Beckham.

Cowboys | Two players re-sign    Tue Apr 21, 05:40 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar and P Chris Jones re-signed to undisclosed deals Tuesday, April 21.

Footballguys view: Dunbar is a player to watch here. The Cowboys are likely to add a back via the 2015 NFL draft, and perhaps that player could end up starting over free agent addition Darren McFadden. Dunbar is likely to be behind McFadden on the depth chart, but we'd be floored if McFadden stayed healthy all season. He's a player to monitor in dynasty leagues, regardless of the caliber of back added to the depth chart via the draft.

Cowboys | Duke Johnson likes Dallas' system    Mon Apr 20, 07:39 PM

Former University of Miami RB Duke Johnson said he fits the Dallas Cowboys' scheme, Monday, April 20. 'In college, we ran the same outside zone scheme,' said Johnson, who also said his familiarization with the scheme means 'I can run it, basically, in my sleep.'

Footballguys view: The Cowboys should be in the market for a running back in the 2015 NFL draft. Johnson is a compact back, but he's an explosive playmaker who can make defenders miss in space. We like him as an edge-runner and receiver out of the backfield who could work well in a RBBC. Johnson should be a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant not at workouts    Mon Apr 20, 10:16 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant is absent for the beginning of the team's voluntary workouts this week.

Footballguys view: Bryant had the franchise tag placed on him earlier this year. He has yet to sign his one-year tender, and there is a deadline of July 15th to reach a new long-term agreement. The two sides have not gotten much traction so far, but that could change when we get closer to the deadline.

Cowboys | Dorial Green-Beckham declines DAL visit    Mon Apr 20, 07:29 AM

Former Missouri WR Dorial Green-Beckham declined a pre-draft visit to the Dallas Cowboys. No reason was given for the turndown.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have dealt with character concerns before when they selected Dez Bryan in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft. Like Bryant, Green-Beckham is supremely talented but there are off-field concerns after a trouble college career. Based purely on talent, Green-Beckham is a top-10 pick. We should see him go off the board late in the first round due to these character concerns instead.

Cowboys | Brett Hundley works out    Fri Apr 17, 04:43 PM

UCLA QB Brett Hundley worked out privately for the Dallas Cowboys in California Thursday, April 16, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Hundley is one of our favorite quarterbacks in the draft, but his projection in the NFL is all over the board. The positive: Hundley has a strong arm and is crazy athletic. The negative: He holds onto the ball too long and takes a lot of sacks. Hundley is worth picking up and developing because of his raw natural skill set. He should be a second-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft.

Cowboys | Sean Mannion to work out for Dallas    Tue Apr 14, 08:29 AM

Oregon State QB Sean Mannion will work out for the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, April 15.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys could use a developmental quarterback behind Tony Romo. Right now, Brandon Weeden is the primary backup. Mannion has a strong arm, but he has little control as a passer--especially when asked or forced to throw on the move. If the pocket is clean, Mannion can make touch throws to all parts of the field. However, with 30 fumbles and 54 interceptions during his college career he'll need to prove that he can make better decisions with the football.

Cowboys | Dallas interested in Melvin Gordon    Mon Apr 13, 08:37 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are high on Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon, and are targeting him in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need a feature running back after losing DeMarco Murray (Eagles) in free agency. Gordon is our second-ranked back in this draft class behind Todd Gurley (Georgia). He's a fast player who is dangerous in the open field. Gordon can take it to the house any time he touches the ball, and he's got the mindset of a workhorse back. Any potential starting back the Cowboys add via the draft is going to be an important person for fantasy owners to consider.

Cowboys | Jay Ajayi visiting    Fri Apr 10, 03:16 PM

Boise State RB Jay Ajayi is meeting with the Dallas Cowboys Friday, April 10. Ajayi also has dinner with representatives from the team Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Ajayi will certainly be a strong consideration if Todd Gurley and Melvin Gordon are gone, and maybe even if Gordon is there. No matter who the Cowboys take in the draft, they'll be a hot commodity in redraft and dynasty leagues alike.

Cowboys | Kevin Johnson visiting Thursday    Thu Apr 9, 02:01 PM

Wake Forest CB Kevin Johnson is meeting with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, April 9.

Footballguys view: Johnson needs a little more sand in his pants. Measuring in at 6'0" 180 pounds, he'll need to put on some more muscle in an NFL weight room to help his pro prospects. He's an aggressive player downfield who gets a little "handsy" in coverage.

Cowboys | Meet with P.J. Williams    Thu Apr 9, 02:01 PM

Florida State CB P.J. Williams met with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Williams is one of the most physically gifted corners in this year's draft class. He played both safety and corner for the Seminoles, and Williams is a position-versatile player with the upside to be a shutdown corner.

Cowboys | Amobi Okoye released    Wed Apr 8, 04:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Amobi Okoye was released Wednesday, April 8.

Footballguys view: Okoye and the Cowboys gave it a shot, but in the end he just couldn't make it back. Okoye was trying to return from a life-threatening disease that put him in a coma at one point. Okoye joined the Cowboys last May, but he never made it past just being on the roster. He spent the 2014 season on the non-football injury list.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden ready to produce    Fri Apr 3, 01:03 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden is ready to show the world that he's better than what he showed in the last couple of seasons with the Oakland Raiders, and he's confident that he'll produce more behind a great offensive line in Dallas. 'I just want to go out there and continue to show people what I can do,' McFadden said. 'I still don't think the world has seen the best of Darren McFadden.'

Footballguys view: McFadden has always had potential, but he's never produced up the level that he could because of injuries. We'll see if he can stay healthy and get it done for the Cowboys this year. We still think the Cowboys are going to add a back through the draft.

Cowboys | No talks between DAL, Dez Bryant    Thu Apr 2, 12:25 PM

Dallas Cowboys franchise free-agent WR Dez Bryant has not had any contract talks with the Dallas Cowboys at this point. The team has until July 15 to sign Bryant to a long-term contract or he will play the 2015 season on his one year-deal.

Footballguys view: For Bryant if the money isn't there, it's worth a gamble that he comes through the other end of the season healthy and productive--and worth more money. Since the Cowboys didn't pay DeMarco Murray, you'd think they would pay Bryant, but so far it's been slow...even though Tony Romo restructured his deal to free up some cap space.

Cowboys | Bryce Petty visits Dallas    Thu Apr 2, 09:44 AM

Baylor QB Bryce Petty met with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, March 30.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are looking for a developmental quarterback behind Tony Romo. Petty put up decent numbers in the spread system at Baylor. He usually made one read and threw to mostly wide open receivers. Petty needs to prove that he can work from under center, read defenses, and challenge a defense vertically.

Cowboys | Sign Efe Obada    Wed Apr 1, 05:41 PM

Street free-agent DE Efe Obada signed with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, April 1.

Footballguys view: At 6'6" 255 pounds, Obada is an intriguing longshot for the Cowboys to pick up. The defensive end appeared in just five games in 2014 for the London Warriors of the British American Football Association National Leagues (BAFANL).

Cowboys | Tony Romo creates cap space for DAL    Wed Apr 1, 01:50 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo's restructured contract will create $12.8 million in salary cap space for the Cowboys, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Before this move, the Cowboys were right up against the cap. This extra space will be used to sign the rookie class, and diehard Cowboys fans are hoping (and praying) the team can find a way to get Adrian Peterson away from the Vikings.

Cowboys | Tony Romo to restructure deal    Wed Apr 1, 01:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo will restructure his contract, which will create salary cap space for the team.

Footballguys view: Romo wanted to restructure his deal earlier so the team would keep DeMarco Murray (Eagles). Since that didn't happen, we'll see what Dallas does with this extra space....besides sign their rookie class.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain re-signs with Dallas    Wed Apr 1, 08:26 AM

Free-agent LB Rolando McClain re-signed with the Dallas Cowboys on a one-year deal worth $3 million.

Footballguys view: McClain turned his career around last year with the Cowboys. He worked well as a run-stuffer, and he also showed that he could cover. McClain can also earn $1 million in playing time incentives.

Cowboys | Tony Romo would have taken pay cut    Tue Mar 31, 08:56 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said Tuesday, March 31, he would have taken a pay cut in order for the team to retain RB DeMarco Murray (Eagles). 'DeMarco ended up asking me, 'Why don't you take a pay cut?'' Romo said. 'I was like, 'I will. I will take a pay cut to go do this.' I was like, 'They're going to restructure me and the whole thing, 'that's the same thing in some ways just for salary-cap purposes.'

Footballguys view: C'est la vie. In the end, the Cowboys never approached Romo about a a pay cut and Murray left for a five-year deal from the rival Philadelphia Eagles. We'll see if the Cowboys draft a guy like Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin) in the first round of the draft to replace Murray.

Cowboys | Interested in Lance Briggs    Mon Mar 30, 05:39 PM

Free-agent LB Lance Briggs (Bears) has drawn interest from the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys have interest in Briggs because they might lose Rolondo McClain in free agency. Briggs missed half of 2014 as he dealt with a groin injury. If healthy, Briggs feels like he can still play at a high level.

Cowboys | Team watches Paul Dawson's workout    Sun Mar 29, 07:02 AM

TCU LB Paul Dawson was watched by Dallas Cowboys scouts during his Pro Day workout. Sources said Dawson's workout times were better than at the NFL Combine.

Footballguys view: Dawson will be a three-down weak-side linebacker in the NFL. He has great agility, a nose for the ball and he arrives at the play with natural violence. Dawson has the athleticism to cover, but he'll have to improve his diagnostic skills on pass plays.

Cowboys | Nick Hayden re-signs    Thu Mar 26, 05:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Nick Hayden re-signed to an undisclosed deal Thursday, March 26.

Footballguys view: A 16-game starter for the Cowboys last year, Hayden made 38 stops (17 solo). He'll be a regular on the defense this season as well.

Cowboys | Not ruling out Rolando McClain return    Tue Mar 24, 11:42 AM

Free-agent LB Rolando McClain (Cowboys) remains on the radar for the Dallas Cowboys, according to Dallas head coach Jason Garrett and vice president Stephen Jones Monday, March 23. The two sides have had no progress in contract talks.

Footballguys view: McClain was a bust early in his career, but he didn't play poorly for the Cowboys last year. We believe McClain staying with Dallas is best for both sides.

Cowboys | Dallas to continue to pound on ground    Tue Mar 24, 10:15 AM

Dallas Cowboys RBs Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar and Joseph Randle figure to see a good amount of work in 2015. Head coach Jason Garrett said the team would like to continue their emphasis on inside running after losing RB DeMarco Murray to the Philadelphia Eagles. 'Absolutely,' Garrett said. 'It has to be replaced. It was a good style of football for us to play. We will try to continue to do that.'

Footballguys view: The Cowboys may want to continue their offensive philosophy that worked so well last year, but they won't have the same results without Murray. We doubt that McFadden stays healthy with a starter's workload, while Dunbar and Randle are backup-caliber backs at best. Unless the Cowboys can trade for Adrian Peterson, we won't have a ton of confidence in their rushing attack this year.

Cowboys | Anthony Spencer not expected back    Sun Mar 22, 11:12 AM

Free-agent DE Anthony Spencer (Cowboys) is not expected to re-sign with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason.

Footballguys view: The signing of Greg Hardy means the Cowboys are likely to let Spencer go. He could work well for a team as a part-time pass-rusher. Spencer has failed to impress since undergoing microfracture surgery on his left knee in 2013.

Cowboys | Nick Hayden returning to Dallas    Thu Mar 19, 09:26 PM

Dallas Cowboys DT Nick Hayden signed a one-year deal Thursday, March 19, to return to the team.

Footballguys view: Hayden is a big run-stuffer who has consistently played for the Cowboys during his career. He has started all 32 games of his Cowboys career, and he led all defensive linemen in tackles last season with 52.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy agrees to terms    Wed Mar 18, 03:52 PM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) has agreed to terms with the Dallas Cowboys Wednesday, March 18, on a one-year deal worth as much as $13.1 million.

Footballguys view: It's a strong move for the Cowboys with a potentially high price tag. Hardy may be suspended the first six games of the season, but that didn't keep the Cowboys from offering him big money. He's a fantastic pass-rusher who should make an immediate impact for Dallas--when he's eligible to play.

Cowboys | Dallas, Greg Hardy near agreement?    Tue Mar 17, 11:47 PM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) and the Dallas Cowboys might finalize a deal by Wednesday, March 18, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hardy may be facing a six-game suspension this year, but that isn't stopping teams from having interest. He's a talented pass-rusher who would be able to help out any team that adds him. It sounds like the Cowboys have to be considered the frontrunners here.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy negotiating    Tue Mar 17, 12:19 PM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) is engaged in ongoing negotiations with the Dallas Cowboys, but the two sides haven't reached an agreement, according to a source. Hardy will visit with Dallas Tuesday, March 17.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy to visit    Tue Mar 17, 11:17 AM

Free-agent DE Greg Hardy (Panthers) is expected to visit the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, March 17.

Footballguys view: Hardy may get suspended six games to start the 2015 season. He's supremely talented as a pass-rusher, but the market has been fairly cool for his services because of a potential suspension. We'll see that market heat up a bit now that the first wave of free agency is done.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden has per-game bonuses    Sun Mar 15, 08:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden's two-year contract includes per-game bonuses each year that will give him incentive to stay healthy or fight through injuries to be on the field. In 2015, McFadden can receive a $9,375 per-game bonus. If he plays all 16 games in 2015, McFadden would receive $150,000 from the Cowboys. In 2016, McFadden can receive a $31,250 per-game bonus.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden agrees with Dallas    Fri Mar 13, 10:35 AM

Free-agent RB Darren McFadden agreed to a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys Friday, March 13. The deal is pending a physical.

Footballguys view: McFadden was an Arkansas Razorback superstar in college (Jerry Jones alma mater), but he's never lived up to his potential as a pro due to injury. If healthy, McFadden could look good behind that Cowboys offensive line. It's still a huge dropoff from what they had in DeMarco Murray. We doubt McFadden can stay healthy for a full season, so watch the Cowboys add more help at running back either through the draft or free agency.

Cowboys | Cowboys to sign Jasper Brinkley    Thu Mar 12, 11:29 PM

Free-agent LB Jasper Brinkley (Vikings) has reached an agreement on a two-year deal with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, March 12, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Brinkley is a two-down thumper who can blow up ball-carriers. He does a good job when asked to scrape-and-flow to the play....just don't ask him to cover.

Cowboys | Dallas in the mix for C.J. Spiller    Wed Mar 11, 06:01 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) could still be pursued by the Dallas Cowboys if free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is not re-signed.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys backfield is hugely important in fantasy terms, and the big beneficiary of their terrific offensive line could be Demarco Murray again or Adrian Peterson, and now it seems it is time to add Spiller to the list. Once one of these open-ended RB scenarios gets resolved, it could set off a domino effect of the others falling into place.

Cowboys | Dallas not expecting DeMarco Murray back?    Wed Mar 11, 11:56 AM

Free-agent RB DeMarco Murray (Cowboys) is almost not expected to re-sign with the Dallas Cowboys at this point, and the prospect of him signing with another team is very real. The Oakland Raiders, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars are in on Murray very hard.

Footballguys view: It's hard to know what is real and what is agent-driven in the Murray story. We wouldn't believe anything until it is officially announced.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray talking with Dallas    Tue Mar 10, 01:57 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray and his agent have at least spoken to the Cowboys after going a few weeks without talking, according to a source. Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones and agent Bill Johnson spoke Monday, March 9. However, it's unclear how involved the discussions were on a contract after Jones said last week the team would make a 'respectable' offer to Murray before free agency opens Tuesday, March 10.

Footballguys view: We have a feeling Murray returns to Dallas. The market for running backs just isn't that hot, so Murray might be better off just staying put. Stay tuned.

Cowboys | DeMarco Murray hasn't talked to Cowboys    Tue Mar 10, 11:44 AM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray has not talked with the team since last week, according to a source. Murray has since deleted all references to the team in his Twitter bio.

Footballguys view: A source last week said Murray would likely return to Dallas despite being one of the most coveted running backs in free agency this year. Murray led the league in rushing with 1,845 yards on 392 carries and 13 touchdowns in 2014.

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills) may get interest from the Dallas Cowboys if RB DeMarco Murray leaves via free agency.

Footballguys view: The chances of Murray returning are probably around 50/50 right now. The running back market just isn't going to be that hot...even for a guy like Murray. We could see him returning to the Cowboys on a team-friendly (but fair) deal.
