Cowboys | Tony Romo willing to help    Tue Feb 9, 04:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo said he learned a lot when he was a backup quarterback and he is willing to help another quarterback learn if the Cowboys sign a free-agent quarterback or take a quarterback in the draft.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys would be wise to find a quarterback of the future. Romo is really good when healthy, but he has trouble staying healthy. They need to be grooming someone behind Romo that is actually a starting-caliber quarterback. Dallas has the fourth-overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft, and guys like Jared Goff (California) or Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) could be options.

Cowboys | Jason Witten planning to stick around?    Sun Feb 7, 09:56 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten said he is taking his career one year at a time, but he added that he would play another seven years if he remains healthy and can play at a high level.

Footballguys view: Witten may not be the same player he used to be, but so long as he's healthy the veteran tight end can be a top-12 fantasy TE. Through various QB changes in 2015, Witten finished the season as the 12th-best fantasy TE in standard leagues.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott likes Dallas    Fri Feb 5, 05:57 PM

Ohio State RB Ezekiel Elliott said he'd love to play for the Dallas Cowboys. 'The Dallas Cowboys (are my pick). I want to go play behind that great offensive line they have down in Dallas,' Elliott said. He ran for more than 1,800 yards in each of his last two seasons in college, and Elliott is pegged to be the top prospect available at his position in the draft this year.

Footballguys view: A running back in the top five might seem unconventional now, but Elliott would maximize the value of the Cowboys studly offensive line.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant wants DeMarco Murray back    Thu Feb 4, 06:51 PM

Philadelphia Eagles RB DeMarco Murray may not return to Philadelphia Eagles next season, and Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has already started recruiting Murray back to Dallas. The Cowboys are one of the teams included among those who might be interested in signing Murray.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys were the ninth ranked running offense in the league according to NFL.com, but they had to rotate in multiple running backs. Sure, the Cowboys would like to have Murray back but not at the price he's going to want.

Cowboys | Tony Romo to have another scan    Thu Feb 4, 05:08 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) will undergo another CT scan at the end of February or in early March, at which point the best way to proceed will be reassessed. There will be two options for Romo. A plate could be attached over the collarbone to limit the potential for further injury. If the CT scan shows good enough bone growth, though, then a portion of the clavicle could be shaved off or removed. The second method would place less long-term stress on the collarbone. Romo is still expected to undergo surgery at a later time.

Footballguys view: The expectation is that Romo will be ready to go and start next season but owner Jerry Jones was right to worry about improving the backup situations. Look for them to make a move, though the buzz is that they will not take a quarterback high in the draft. Sorry Carson Wentz fans!

Cowboys | Tony Romo pauses surgery four weeks    Wed Feb 3, 09:10 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) will be re-evaluated in four weeks before making a final decision on surgery to his left collarbone, according to sources. Romo had a CT scan a week ago on the collarbone, which showed good bone growth.

Footballguys view: Whether or not he needs surgery won't have much of an impact on his offseason. Regardless of whether or not he goes under the knife, Romo is likely to be very limited at OTAs and minicamp. The team needs him ready for training camp, and they need him to stay healthy during the regular season so they can make a playoff run.

Cowboys | No major changes for Dallas offense    Tue Feb 2, 08:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he doesn't anticipate any major changes coming to the Cowboys' offense next season.

Footballguys view: The team doesn't need to make wholesale changes to the offense. They only need QB Tony Romo to stay healthy in order to make a run at the playoffs. If not, the team needs to find a better backup (Robert Griffin III?) behind Romo if (when?) he gets hurt again.

Cowboys | Dallas unlikely to sign Johnny Manziel    Tue Feb 2, 04:43 PM

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel is unlikely to sign with the Dallas Cowboys if he is released by the Browns, according to ESPNDallas.com's Todd Archer. Archer said the Cowboys need a reliable backup quarterback, and that it's hard to imagine Dallas signing Manziel for such a need.

Footballguys view: Yeah, we're just not as sure that Jerry Jones will stay away from Manziel a second time. Jones wanted to select Manziel in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft, but fortunately was convinced to sign OG Zack Martin instead. If Manziel is on the open market, we have a feeling Jones just won't be able to resist. Perhaps the Cowboys can add a reliable backup too, and then work to develop Manziel.

Cowboys | Dak Prescott meets with Dallas    Mon Feb 1, 07:06 AM

Mississippi State QB Dak Prescott met with the Dallas Cowboys for about one hour Friday, Jan. 29, before he played in that weekend's Senior Bowl.

Footballguys view: Prescott is an interesting and athletic quarterback who won the Most Outstanding Player Award for his performance in the Senior Bowl. However, during the week of practice Prescott showed that there's much to improve as a passer. He can run and gash a defense with his legs, but Prescott needs to show better consistency and improved pass-placement as a thrower. At this time, Prescott is considered a third- or fourth-round pick.

Cowboys | DeMarcus Lawrence undergoes surgery    Sun Jan 31, 11:45 AM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence (back) underwent back surgery to fix an issue which bothered him for much of the second half of the 2015 season, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: Lawrence should be ready for OTAs and minicamp. He played with this injury and performed well in 2015. Lawrence led the team with eight sacks in 2015, and he should once again be a quality defensive end for them in 2016.

Cowboys | Tony Romo to lead familiar offense    Fri Jan 29, 09:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he doesn't expect any major changes in the offensive philosophy in 2016, and he added that he expects QB Tony Romo back and ready to go for the start of the season.

Footballguys view: Romo should be ready to go in 2016, and fantasy owners should consider him a low-end QB1 with injury risk. His propensity to get injured is the reason why we think the Cowboys will look to add a better backup QB through the draft or free agency.

Cowboys | Carson Wentz meets with Dallas    Fri Jan 29, 02:41 PM

North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz met with Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones after Senior Bowl practice Wednesday, Jan. 27. The Cowboys have the fourth overall draft pick this year, and there is speculation that Dallas could move up to No. 1 overall to take a quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys coaching staff is actually coaching Wentz during the Senior Bowl as they are in charge of the North Team. They'll get hands-on analysis of what kind of pro QB that Wentz could be. We love Wentz's ability to throw on the run, get rid of the ball quickly and keep plays alive with his feet while keeping his eyes downfield. The Cowboys have Tony Romo as the starter, but he's been hurt too often in recent years. They need a better backup plan and a developmental quarterback of the future. That could be Wentz.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy not returning    Fri Jan 29, 10:29 AM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent DE Greg Hardy is not expected to be re-signed by the team due to excessive partying.

Footballguys view: Should anyone be shocked by this? Hardy is already a handful because of the baggage and reputation he comes with. Excessive partying and still being a problem when the Cowboys gave him a second chance is not going to help his chances of staying with the team.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant should be ready for workouts    Wed Jan 27, 08:32 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) is recovering from recent foot surgery at the team's facility but should be ready for offseason workouts. Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the team will manage Bryant during the offseason.

Footballguys view: The team is wisely going to take it easy on Bryant. If he and Tony Romo are healthy, the Cowboys can do a lot of damage through the air.

Cowboys | Dallas may not draft QB    Wed Jan 27, 05:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he doesn't feel pressured to draft a quarterback in 2016 as QB Tony Romo's heir apparent. 'There are many options,' Jones said. 'There's free agency ... We have to (draft a QB) to do what? We have to win a Super Bowl next year? Do we have to compete for a Super Bowl in the future? Do you have to have it in place after this draft? There's no have-to here, in my mind, because we have the luxury of having Romo here for three, four, five more years.'

Footballguys view: They may not draft a quarterback, but we feel the Cowboys will add a better backup somehow this offseason. That may include adding second-chance guys like Robert Griffin III or Johnny Manziel if they're available. The Cowboys can go far with Romo, but they need insurance for if (when) he gets hurt again.

  Cowboys | Tony Romo's injuries a concern?    Wed Jan 27, 01:50 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo's (collarbone) injuries are a concern, especially as he ages, according to former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman. 'I think the collarbone certainly is a concern,' Aikman said. 'He's broken it now three times in, I believe, the last five years. As you mentioned, they're going to go in, they're going to put a plate in. That should strengthen it, is that going to be enough? I don't know.'

Footballguys view: Why is there a question mark in the headline? Of course the Cowboys are concerned with Romo's injuries. They need to find a better backup option just in case Romo gets hurt again this year.

Cowboys | Dallas to make QB splash?    Wed Jan 27, 10:54 AM

Cleveland Browns QB Johnny Manziel and Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III are options for the Dallas Cowboys as former Cowboys QB Troy Aikman believes owner Jerry Jones will make a splash at the position in the offseason.

Footballguys view: We could see that happening. Jones wanted to select Manziel in the 2014 NFL draft, but the team wisely chose OG Zack Martin. While Martin has thrived as a pro, Manziel has flopped with the Browns. The Cowboys need to add a better backup and perhaps even a QB of the future behind Tony Romo in 2016. Both Manziel (Texas A&M) and Griffin (Baylor) played their college ball in Texas.

Cowboys | Tony Romo to be out a while    Sun Jan 24, 02:11 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) is anticipating a six-to-eight week recovery from his eventual surgery date.

Footballguys view: No big deal here. Romo is going to get the surgery he needs, then the team will ease him back into action. They can go far with Romo as their starter, but they have to find a better backup plan in case he goes down with another injury.

Cowboys | Surgery planned for Tony Romo    Sun Jan 24, 02:05 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) is planning to have surgery this offseason to plate his left collarbone to prevent future injuries, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Romo has fractured his collarbone three times in the past five seasons. We're expecting the Cowboys to find another quarterback this offseason they can groom as his backup and perhaps even an eventual starter.

Cowboys | Tony Romo will have scan     Sat Jan 23, 03:36 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (shoulder) will have a CT scan this week to determine if he needs shoulder surgery. Romo did say that his shoulder and back feel good.

Footballguys view: Surgery or no, Romo needs to do whatever he can to get back to full strength and then stay at full strength. With Romo in the lineup the Cowboys can go far. However, they need to have a better backup plan in place for if (when?) he gets banged up again. We think the Cowboys will consider adding a backup quarterback via free agency or a developmental quarterback through the NFL draft.

Cowboys | Dallas drafting Tony Romo's replacement?    Fri Jan 22, 12:36 AM

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he is open to using the team's first-round pick, No. 4 overall, to draft an heir apparent for QB Tony Romo.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys need to find that next quarterback and have a better backup plan if (when) Romo goes down with another injury. At the top of the draft, guys like Paxton Lynch (Memphis), Jared Goff (California) and even Carson Wentz (North Dakota State) could be options.

Cowboys | Jason Witten a top tight end again    Thu Jan 21, 07:34 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten finished as a No. 1 fantasy tight end for the twelfth season in a row.

Footballguys view: If Tony Romo had been healthy, Witten's numbers might have been even better. Of course, if Rob Gronkowski hadn't missed games himself, the numbers might be different. Witten is a guy you can wait on, and given his value each year, is practically a steal.

Cowboys | Tony Romo talks future    Tue Jan 19, 02:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo plans to play at least four more seasons despite turning 36 this year.

Footballguys view: Romo may want to play four more years, but will his body hold up? The Cowboys can win and go far so long as Romo is healthy. However, the team needs to consider having a better backup plan as Romo has been banged up quite a bit in recent years.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant having surgery Wednesday    Wed Jan 6, 12:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot, ankle) is undergoing surgery on his right foot and ankle Wednesday, Jan. 6, according to sources. He'll have another bone graft added to his foot and will have his ankle cleaned up, and the Cowboys are expecting him to be ready for the offseason program in April.

Footballguys view: The foot/ankle problem really slowed Bryant down this year. Bryant had his initial surgery on his fifth metatarsal in September and also had a screw put in his foot. He should be ready to go for OTAs later in the year.

Cowboys | RG3 hopeful of landing in Dallas    Tue Jan 5, 10:16 PM

Sources close to Washington Redskins RB Robert Griffin III is hopeful of landing with the Dallas Cowboys if he is dumped for salary purposes by his current team.

Footballguys view: Griffin played college football in Texas for Baylor, and a return to the Lone Star state might be a good move. The Cowboys have Tony Romo as their starter, but with as fragile as Romo is/has been they need to find a better backup and perhaps even a QB who develop into something more.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden has bounce-back year    Tue Jan 5, 04:01 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden had his best season since 2010, totaling 1,089 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns.

Footballguys view: McFadden took over as the starter in Week 8, and he never looked back. Behind that Cowboys offensive line, McFadden was able to be productive and fairly consistent. We expect the Cowboys to add more talent to the running back position this offseason. If McFadden still enters next year as the top RB in Dallas, he should be considered a top-20 fantasy player at his position.

Cowboys | Tony Romo may undergo surgery    Mon Jan 4, 01:44 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) said he will decide this month on whether he will undergo surgery on his broken collarbone. Romo said he is considering all of the options he has available.

Footballguys view: Earlier reports indicated that Romo would not have to have surgery. Now, Romo may have a plate inserted to strengthen his thrice broken left collarbone. Either way, he should be ready to go by the time training camp rolls around.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden reaches 1,000 yards    Sun Jan 3, 08:49 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden had 12 carries for 92 yards and five catches for 53 yards in a 34-23 loss to the Washington Redskins in Week 17, reaching 1,000 yards rushing for the second time in his career.

Footballguys view: McFadden could have had a bigger game if he didn't fumble through the end zone. He'll be prominent in the Cowboys backfield mix again next year.

Cowboys | Kellen Moore throws for 435    Sun Jan 3, 08:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Kellen Moore completed 33 of 48 passes for 435 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in a 24-16 loss to the Washington Redskins in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Moore gave teams in the market for a backup something to think about entering the 2016 offseason. He didn't have the benefit of Dez Bryant either.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams piles up yards    Sun Jan 3, 08:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams finished with eight catches for 173 yards in a 34-24 loss to the Washington Redskins in Week 17.

Footballguys view: Kellen Moore had a good showing in Week 17, and Williams was a big reason why. The Cowboys pass offense had so many problems this year that it was hard to see if Williams had any growth in year three.

Cowboys | Tony Romo could have plate inserted    Tue Dec 29, 10:01 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (clavicle) could have a plate surgically inserted onto his left clavicle, which he has broken three times since 2010. 'We have a few ideas of what we can do with the collarbone,' said Romo. 'There are a few plans. We're going to pick out the CT scan and some of the other stuff and see how much calcification has taken and whether it's gotten to a point where we feel like it's really strong and it will be able to handle some of the normal hits you take.'

Footballguys view: We can rebuild him. Romo isn't the $6 million dollar man, and instead is a $20.8 million dollar man in 2016. The Cowboys need to do whatever they can in order to keep Romo on the field.

'He's going to have some further tests and evaluations here in the next couple of days and we'll make a better determination as the week goes on.'
