Cowboys | Dez Bryant involved in scuffle    Sun Aug 2, 11:10 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was reportedly involved in an altercation with CB Tyler Patmon during training camp Sunday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: We're not surprised here. Bryant is one of the most passionate players in the league. That passion sometimes spills over to altercations.

Cowboys | Joseph Randle polishing his game    Sat Aug 1, 10:38 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle said he is working on his pass protection skills as he tries to improve on the intangibles he will need to win the starting running back job.

Footballguys view: Randle is the frontrunner to win the starting job in Dallas, and that would make him a fine RB2 for fantasy owners. The Cowboys have an incredible offensive line, and Randle should have plenty of room to run.

Cowboys | Tony Romo likely to sit Wednesday    Fri Jul 31, 08:39 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo did not participate in practice on Wednesdays last season and likely will sit out those practices again during the regular season this year.

Footballguys view: Same as it ever was.

Cowboys | Joseph Randle top choice for RB job    Fri Jul 31, 08:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle is the leading candidate for the starting running back job at this point. The team like Randle's vision and explosiveness and expect big things from him this season.

Footballguys view: Darren McFadden is already banged up (hamstring), so Randle is the leading guy and should stay that way. Behind that incredible offensive line, Randle could produce like a steady RB2 for fantasy owners this year.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy injured    Fri Jul 31, 02:42 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Greg Hardy (abdomen) suffered a minor rib strain during practice Thursday, July 30, according to sources.

Footballguys view: It wouldn't be training camp without some bumps and bruises. Hardy was able to finish practice but may be limited as a precaution in future sessions.

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne attends practice    Fri Jul 31, 02:38 PM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) attended practice Friday, July 31, but did not participate in team activities. He went through positional drills and appears to be healthy.

Cowboys | Deal won't change Dez Bryant    Thu Jul 30, 11:46 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant said his new contract won't change the way he approaches the game. 'It's no pressure, man,' Bryant said Thursday, July 30. 'It's no pressure. That deal don't make me. It don't make me. I play this game because I love this game.'

Footballguys view: Money changes some players. We'll see if Bryant can stay out of trouble and avoid the pitfalls that sometimes come with large contracts.

Cowboys | Steven Jackson want to go to Dallas    Thu Jul 30, 08:15 PM

Free-agent RB Steven Jackson (Falcons) posted his desire to join the Dallas Cowboys on Twitter Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: Of course Jackson wants to go to Dallas! The Cowboys offensive line will be able to make most any back fantasy relevant. At this time, Joseph Randle is set to be the starting running back.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden's injury not the same    Thu Jul 30, 04:54 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden's (hamstring) hamstring injury is not the same hamstring he injured during organized team activities. Head coach Jason Garrett said he is hopeful McFadden will be back in a week.

Footballguys view: The story with McFadden will always be the same: the guy just can't stay healthy. This new hamstring injury won't help him win the starting job in Dallas. We'll see him as the backup behind Joseph Randle this year.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden on PUP list    Thu Jul 30, 01:31 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) was placed on the Active/Physically Unable to Perform list Thursday, July 30.

Footballguys view: McFadden is talented, but injuries have held him back as a pro. He'll work as the backup behind Joseph Randle when healthy.

Cowboys | Joseph Randle receives endorsement    Wed Jul 29, 08:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle received strong praise from team owner and general manager Jerry Jones Wednesday July 29. 'We have a player (in Randle) that has the potential -- and we based that on, not on what he did at Oklahoma State or how we drafted him, but by literally being a teammate around here for the last two years -- but he has the potential to be the kind of back that would step in there and be your No. 1 back,' Jones told reporters. 'If he were not here, then I wouldn't feel as good as we go into the season and what might happen,' said Jones.

Footballguys view: Any back behind that Cowboys O-Line is going to be fantasy relevant. Randle is a determined runner with decent straight-line speed. He has to be considered the top back above Darren McFadden at this time. Randle is a RB2 with upside for fantasy owners.

Cowboys | Jeremy Mincey won't report    Tue Jul 28, 09:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Jeremy Mincey won't report to training camp, per a source Tuesday, July 28. Mincey was unsuccessful in working out a new deal.

Footballguys view: Mincey is due $1.5 million this year, but after leading the team in sacks and pressures last season he wants a boost in pay. The Cowboys added pass-rushing DE Greg Hardy in free agency, and they selected DE Randy Gregory in the draft so Mincey may not be able to duplicate that production this year.

Cowboys | Dallas still not interested in veterans    Tue Jul 28, 08:50 PM

The Dallas Cowboys are still not interested in veteran RBs Chris Johnson and Ray Rice, following the release of RB Ryan Williams Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Guys like Johnson and Rice want to get back into the league, but at this time they're on the outside looking in. The Cowboys are likely to have a strong rushing attack regardless of who is lining up in the backfield. The Cowboys remain confident in RBs Joseph Randle, Darren McFadden and Lance Dunbar.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams placed on IR    Tue Jul 28, 05:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams (knee) was placed on Reserve/Injured Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Williams was put on Injured Reserve--not released as earlier reports indicated. He just can't get healthy. This is truly a "what might have been" sitaution. Williams was a gifted runner, but his body has betrayed him as a pro and his playing days are likely over.

Cowboys | Ryan Williams cut    Tue Jul 28, 11:43 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ryan Williams (knee) was waived/injured Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: The story of Williams will always read "what might have been." Coming out of Virginia Tech, Williams was incredible as a runner with big-play ability. A knee injury during his rookie season robbed him of his natural skill, and he's never been the same since then.

Cowboys | Gus Johnson signs with Dallas    Tue Jul 28, 11:37 AM

Undrafted free-agent RB Gus Johnson (Stephen F. Austin) signed an undisclosed deal with the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Johnson has a strong lower body, and he does a good job of keeping his pads low before contact. He lacks speed to the edge and will be a longshot to make an impact of any kind in the NFL.

Cowboys | Dallas in contact with Chris Johnson    Tue Jul 28, 09:43 AM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) has been in contact with the Dallas Cowboys.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys are a team that could be interested in free agent running backs like Chris Johnson or Ray Rice. They have Joseph Randle as the top back, and Darren McFadden could serve as his backup. Johnson is reportedly in shape and ready to get back into the league, and he might be on the team's emergency list if one of their backs (McFadden) gets banged up.

Cowboys | Morris Claiborne could have big year    Wed Jul 22, 07:59 PM

Dallas Cowboys CB Morris Claiborne (knee) is expected to be ready for the start of training camp, after he was limited throughout offseason workouts, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones Tuesday, July 21. Jones expects Claiborne to have a big year in 2015.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain could begin on PUP list    Wed Jul 22, 07:58 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain (knee) could be a candidate to begin the season on the physically unable to perform list, according to executive vice president Stephen Jones Wednesday, July 22.

Footballguys view: We'll be watching the Cowboys defense in training camp and the preseason to see who is set to benefit most from his early season suspension in IDP leagues. Sean Lee and Anthony Hitchens are the top candidates.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant could be limited in camp    Tue Jul 21, 02:49 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant could see a decreased amount of snaps during training camp this year in an attempt to preserve his good health. According to executive vice president Stephen Jones, it will be important for Bryant and the Cowboys for him not to be 'thrown to the wolves' right away.

Footballguys view: We're not shocked by this. Bryant missed out on OTAs and minicamp, so it makes sense for the Cowboys to ease him back into action. He'll be ready to rock in plenty of time for the regular season opener.

Cowboys | Chris Johnson could sign with Dallas    Fri Jul 17, 03:39 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) might sign with the Dallas Cowboys either during training camp or the regular season, in the opinion of Jason La Canfora of cbssports.com.

Footballguys view: Johnson is not the same player he used to be, but the Cowboys may be looking for better depth at the running back position. Nearly any back behind that line should be able to thrive, so even a back like Johnson is worth watching if he's getting significant carries in Dallas.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant has been elite    Wed Jul 15, 03:41 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has tallied 5,424 yards and 56 touchdowns on 381 catches over the past five seasons.

Footballguys view: There's no question that Bryant is one of the best receivers in the game today. Bryant's three consecutive seasons of 1,000 yards receiving and 10 or more touchdowns ties a team mark set by Terrell Owens (2006-2008).

Cowboys | Dez Bryant gets long-term contract    Wed Jul 15, 03:18 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant will receive $45 million guaranteed in his new five-year, $70 million deal.

Footballguys view: This is a fair price for the Cowboys...and for Bryant. He was threatening to hold out into the season, but that is not going to happen. Bryant is a top-flight fantasy wide receiver who is going off the board at the end of the first round in most drafts. Now, the market is set for this level of wide receiver. Expect contracts for A.J. Green and Julio Jones to be of a similar structure.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden may open camp as No. 2 RB    Wed Jul 15, 02:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) is expected to compete for the starting running back job but will enter training camp as the No. 2 back in part because he missed some offseason workouts because of an injury.

Footballguys view: McFadden has always been incredibly talented, but injuries have held him back. He could thrive behind the monstrous offensive line in Dallas, but lack of durability is always a concern. Joseph Randle is likely to be the starter with McFadden serving as his backup.

Cowboys | Dallas ups offer to Dez Bryant    Wed Jul 15, 11:25 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant is more optimistic than ever about signing a long-term deal after the Cowboys increased their offer to more than $13 million per year Wednesday, July 15.

Footballguys view: Bryant is set to make $12.8 million this season on a one-year franchise tender. Offering him just a little more than that annually may not be enough to get it done. This deal will come down to signing bonus and guaranteed money. Stay tuned.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant still has leverage    Tue Jul 14, 09:19 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant won't necessarily lose leverage in his quest for a new contract if Wednesday, July 15's deadline passes without a long-term deal. Bryant could miss games at the start of the season and force the Cowboys to realize his importance. Bryant could then land the deal he has been seeking, while also compensating for the approximately $755,000 per week he would miss out on by sitting.

Footballguys view: What if the team doesn't struggle as much as Bryant thinks without him? Then what happens to his leverage? Missing out on $755,000 per week just doesn't make a lot of sense. The Cowboys are already hesitant to pay a big-money contract to Bryant, and there's a line of thinking where they'll pay even more to make up for the money he'd miss out on by holding out? That's just not sensible. Bryant seems to be insistent on holding out, so fantasy owners need to take note when drafting him.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant offered over $12.8 million    Tue Jul 14, 07:21 PM

The Dallas Cowboys have made an offer to WR Dez Bryant that is more than the $12.8 million per year he would've earned under the franchise tag. The Cowboys have guaranteed more of the salary as well.

Footballguys view: LOL, yes of course we'd hope their offer is larger than the one-year tender of a franchise player. Calvin Johnson is making $16 million per year, and Bryant may be targeting that kind of money. We are not confident the two sides will work something out before Wednesday's deadline.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant essential to passing TDs    Tue Jul 14, 06:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant was on the field for all but one of his team's passing touchdowns in 2014. The Cowboys have scored just seven passing touchdowns over the last three seasons when Bryant has been off the field.

Footballguys view: We like Terrance Williams as an up-and-coming talent, but he's not Dez Bryant. The Cowboys would certainly be in trouble without Bryant. Right now, he's threatening to miss games in the regular season if the Cowboys don't sign him to a long-term agreement before Wednesday's deadline. Stay tuned.

Cowboys | Cole Beasley staying in slot    Tue Jul 14, 10:42 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Cole Beasley has remained in the slot receiver role with WR Dez Bryant absent this offseason.

Footballguys view: This makes sense, even with Bryant absent from the offseason program. Beasley is not built to play on the outside, but he's almost the perfect build for a slot receiver. He'll be competing for a returner job in training camp, and Beasley could snare about 35-40 passes (with a few touchdowns) this season.

Cowboys | Devin Street works with starters    Tue Jul 14, 10:41 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Devin Street worked with the starters with WR Dez Bryant absent this offseason.

Footballguys view: Street is an interesting player for dynasty owners to scoop up on the cheap. He's a big-bodied receiver with a large wingspan. Street has the ability to high-point the ball as it comes in, and he can regularly win at the point of the catch because of his aggression. He's not a burner, but he's a name to know in case Bryant holds out into the regular season.

Cowboys | Terrance Williams earns praise    Tue Jul 14, 10:32 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Terrance Williams has grown a rapport with QB Tony Romo this offseason and was praised by wide receivers coach Derek Dooley. 'He's not only taken a tremendous leadership role in the group, really setting the example of how you do things, he's expanded his route inventory,' Dooley said at the conclusion of last month's minicamp. 'He's played X. He's played Z. He's played in the slot and every day he went out there and was the same player. Every route, every opportunity he had he took advantage of it. So he's made a big jump this offseason.'

Footballguys view: Williams has been steadily improving his game over the last two years. He's got the ability to score long touchdowns each week because of his speed. Williams has improved his concentration, and he seems to have earned the trust of QB Tony Romo. The Cowboys ground game won't be as effective this year without DeMarco Murray, so expect them to go to the air more than they did last season. Williams is a fine pick with a current ADP of WR52 (11.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Jason Witten has stayed healthy    Mon Jul 13, 01:48 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten has not missed a start since the 2006 season.

Footballguys view: The old man has been "steady Eddie" for fantasy owners for quite some time. Witten has been a top-10 fantasy tight end every season since 2007. This year, Witten is still seen as a TE1 and solid starter each week.

Cowboys | Stephen Jones denies Dez Bryant threat    Mon Jul 13, 01:14 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has not communicated to executive vice president Stephen Jones that he is willing to sit out training camp and regular season games if he does not receive a new deal, according to Jones.

Footballguys view: Of course he's going to deny the rumor, but Bryant has come out on Twitter with a statement with the hashtag FACT. The wide receiver is using what he can as a negotiating ploy. We'll see if he actually skips regular season games if no long-term deal is done.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant talks going slow    Mon Jul 13, 01:12 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant's reps have had only one face-to-face meeting with the Cowboys this offseason, and the two sides have exchanged contract proposals once during that span.

Footballguys view: Deals get done at deadlines in the NFL...and the deadline is coming up Wednesday. Things could heat up quickly in the next two days, but at this time it seems dire.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant playing hardball    Mon Jul 13, 11:41 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant called executive vice president Stephen Jones to say that he won't attend training camp and will miss real games unless he signs a long-term deal by Wednesday, July 15, according to a source.

Footballguys view: We've heard this before, and only time will tell if Bryant skips games in the regular season. The two sides have until July 15th to work out a new long-term contract. If no deal is reached, Bryant will have to play on his one-year franchise tender worth $12.8 million. Stay tuned.

Cowboys | Jason Witten still dependable    Sat Jul 11, 09:51 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Jason Witten was one of three tight ends to be on the field for more than 1,000 snaps last year.

Footballguys view: Witten is timeless, overcoming a few lulls in production to remain a low TE1 the last two years. 2013 second-round pick Gavin Escobar is still blocked by Witten, although Witten could slide from his typical production any year now.

Cowboys | Dallas dismisses collusion talk    Sat Jul 11, 05:03 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant and Denver Broncos WR Demaryius Thomas' contract situations are under investigation by the NFL to determine whether the two teams colluded. A Cowboys source said 'there's nothing to it,' when asked about the investigation.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys were docked 10 million dollars in cap space for skirting league rules in 2012 regarding restructuring deals during the uncapped year of 2010, so we'll wait for official word before dismissing these claims.

Cowboys | Greg Hardy's suspension reduced    Fri Jul 10, 02:30 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Greg Hardy's 10-game suspension was reduced to four games Friday, July 10, after he appealed the ruling.

Footballguys view: This is a good development for the Cowboys, who will now have Hardy for 12 games. Tom Brady's four-game suspension looks especially harsh when it is equal to Hardy's for domestic violence, so that could factor into the decision about the final length of Brady's suspension.

Cowboys | Doug Free expects to be ready for camp    Thu Jul 9, 03:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys OT Doug Free (ankle, foot) said he expects to be ready for the start of training camp. Free did not participate in any of the offseason workouts since he was recovering from ankle and foot surgery.

Footballguys view: With Jeremy Parnell gone to Jacksonville, the Cowboys would have to put a younger lineman on the spot if Free has any problems in his comeback from multiple surgeries. Lucky for them, they landed La'el Collins as one of those youngsters.

Cowboys | Cole Beasley could be a returner    Thu Jul 9, 01:43 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Cole Beasley could be used as a returner this season since the team has not filled the role.

Footballguys view: Beasley is the slot receiver extraordinaire for the Cowboys who could have decent numbers this year if the running game lags behind new faces with Demarco Murray gone. Beasley was actually one of Tony Romo's favorite targets down the stretch, and he is an excellent late-round best ball pick.

Cowboys | No deal imminent for Dez Bryant    Wed Jul 8, 01:45 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant has not had a lot of contract talks with the team and there is no deal imminent at this point, according to a source. The team has until July 15 to sign Bryant to a long-term contract extension.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys showed their mettle in the Demarco Murray negotiations, so Bryant playing this year under his franchise tender is very possible. Either way, we'd bet on him being on the field for Week 1.

Cowboys | Tony Romo talks Dez Bryant deal    Mon Jul 6, 03:37 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant's impending long-term deal is taking a while to get done, but QB Tony Romo believes it will work out. Romo said the NFL is a business, and that Bryant's absence during the offseason is part of that business aspect. However, Romo said he thinks a deal will work out.

Footballguys view: Romo's personality is polite and good-natured. He's not going say anything to call out his teammate or his organization while still projecting vague positivity. He's set up to extract more production out of crazy pass efficiency numbers from 2014 if the Cowboys don't get as much out of their backfield this year.
