Cowboys | Darren McFadden designation update     Fri Jul 29, 03:35 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) was placed on the Active/Non-Football Injury list Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: A report from Bleacher Report's Jason Cole puts McFadden on track to return Week 1, but we know how McFadden can turn a routine re-conditioning post-injury into an extended absence. At least this is not a leg injury. We would be hesitant to draft McFadden unless it starts to look like Ezekiel Elliott is in danger of a suspension from a recent domestic violence accusation.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar to PUP    Fri Jul 29, 02:50 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Dunbar tore his ACL, MCL and patellar tendon in his left knee last year. We are unlikely to see him before Week 7, if we see him at all.

Cowboys | Two Cowboys defenders to reserve list    Fri Jul 29, 02:40 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain and DE Randy Gregory were placed on the Reserve/Did Not Report list Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Both players are on thin ice with the Cowboys, which means they are on thin ice with the NFL as a whole. McClain had already basically come back from the dead after failing with the Raiders as a top 10 pick. Gregory was known to be a big character risk, and appears to have reinforced the trend of teams being more conservative about players with big talent, but big off field questions.

Cowboys | Gavin Escobar avoids PUP    Fri Jul 29, 11:55 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar (Achilles') was not placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Friday, July 29.

Footballguys view: This is a good sign for Escobar's ability to get back to his pre-injury form, although that form was far from justifying the second-round pick the Cowboys spent on him in 2013. James Hanna is on the PUP to open camp, so Escobar surprisingly is the one with a leg up here in the quest to be the #2 tight end.

Cowboys | Nick Foles to join Dallas?    Thu Jul 28, 01:47 AM

Free-agent QB Nick Foles (Rams) is drawing interest from the Dallas Cowboys, joining the Buffalo Bills and Minnesota Vikings, according to a source. The New York Jets also had interest in Foles, but after signing QB Ryan Fitzpatrick it's unlikely the Jets are still interested.

Footballguys view: We'd think the Cowboys and Bills are the most likely landing spots as the Cowboys know their backup situation is beyond shaky and the Bills are clearly not sold on Taylor, though a rumored extension could change things there. He could compete for a role in Buffalo, but anywhere else he would be a pure backup.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith headed to NFI    Wed Jul 27, 01:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) will be placed on the non-football injury list Wednesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Smith may miss his entire rookie season after suffering a career-threatening knee injury in Notre Dame's bowl game. We hope to see him back and healthy sometime, but don't expect that to happen until 2017.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden on track for opener    Wed Jul 27, 01:05 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) received positive results from his bone scan, and he's on track for the season opener.

Footballguys view: Let's hope he doesn't drop any cell phones between then and now. McFadden will serve as a backup behind rookie Ezekiel Elliott. We could see Elliott get well over 300 carries this year, so there may not be a lot of work for McFadden in 2016.

Cowboys | Randy Gregory faces longer suspension    Tue Jul 26, 02:50 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Randy Gregory recently committed another violation of the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy. He is now facing a 10-game suspension as opposed to his original four-game punishment, according to sources. Some involved with the Cowboys are concerned Gregory may not play again.

Footballguys view: Gregory had plenty of baggage coming out of Nebraska, and now he's in trouble again. A second-round pick in 2015, Gregory gets an additional six games of suspension with this latest infraction. We may not see the second-year player on the field much if at all this season.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott on tap for 375 carries?    Mon Jul 25, 09:21 AM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott should be prepared to carry the ball around 375 times, according to SI.com's Peter King.

Footballguys view: That would smash what Adrian Peterson (327) received last year as the only RB in the league with over 300 carries. Elliott has the ability to lead the league in rushing right out of the gate as a rookie. He's incredibly talented and running behind the league's best offensive line. The Cowboys would like Elliott to carry the offense so they can use the ground game to keep Tony Romo fresh for what they hope is a playoff run.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden eyeing preseason return    Fri Jul 22, 09:29 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) will have a scan on his broken elbow Monday, July 25, and he said hopes to return during the preseason.

Footballguys view: McFadden's status becomes more important with the specter of league discipline now hanging over Ezekiel Elliott related to an alleged domestic violence incident. If McFadden isn't ready for Week 1, or if he has a setback in his conditioning to return to the field, Alfred Morris will be set up to be an early-season sleeper.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott denies claims    Fri Jul 22, 12:37 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott was accused of assaulting his ex-girlfriend Friday, July 22, but was not arrested, according to a police report filed in Ohio. The league will review the accusation under its personal conduct policy, but Elliott denied the accusations. The police report cites four witnesses who each said they did not see the assault take place.

Footballguys view: Some reports are coming out that help Elliott, such as the police report having four witnesses who deny the alleged victim's claim. but the league will conduct their own investigation. It's very difficult to predict how the league will react to this news. Don't move Elliott down yet, but be open to changing that stance if more facts come out that paint him in a bad light in this incident. If Elliott does end up missing time at the beginning of the season, Alfred Morris would be better situated to benefit with Darren McFadden recovering from a broken elbow and a notorious slow healer.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith won't be ready    Tue Jul 19, 02:23 PM

Updating a previous report, Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) is still not expected to be ready for the start of the regular season despite making recent progress. 'Obviously Jaylon Smith will be one who will probably take some time, if not all the year, but we'll see how that goes,' owner Jerry Jones said. Smith is the only Cowboy not expected to be ready for the start of the season.

Footballguys view: We think it's best to shut down Smith for the year and see what he can do in 2017. The devastating knee injury he suffered in Notre Dame's bowl game earlier this year needs a lot of time to heal...and there's no guarantee that he'll ever be the same player again.

Cowboys | Gavin Escobar should be ready    Tue Jul 19, 02:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar (Achilles') is expected to be ready for the regular season, according to owner Jerry Jones. Escobar underwent surgery last December to repair a torn Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be. Escobar's dynasty stock is low, and we don't see him turning things around with the Cowboys. Jason Witten is their primary TE, and at this time it seems Escobar is not his heir apparent.

Cowboys | Jaylon Smith's status undetermined    Tue Jul 19, 11:06 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith's (knee) status is undetermined, according to owner Jerry Jones. 'That was to be expected,' Jones said. 'He is not off plan at all. The rejuvenation of the nerve that would help him get in position to actually hit the field is not complete, but it is not behind. He's doing many things that would let you use the word 'progress.''

Footballguys view: We just want to see Smith healthy and back on the football field. A likely top-10 pick in the 2016 NFL draft, Smith suffered a devastating injury in Notre Dame's bowl game and has been working his way back ever since. If healthy, the Cowboys got a steal in the second round of the draft by adding Smith. Even though the team has need at the LB position, they should not rush Smith back. In fact, there's still a chance that he doesn't play as a rookie. We're okay with that as his long-term health is most important. He's a special player if he can return to form.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar ready by end of camp?    Tue Jul 19, 09:47 AM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) hasn't been totally ruled out to return during training camp, and he's ahead of schedule in his rehab.

Footballguys view: Cool...and he still won't see the field that often in 2016. The Cowboys are going to use rookie Ezekiel Elliott as their workhorse back, and he may push upwards of 300 carries in 2016. Dunbar's a decent change-of-pace back, but we can't imagine his role being large enough to be fantasy relevant.

Cowboys | Lance Dunbar close to being ready    Mon Jul 18, 06:17 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Lance Dunbar (knee) could be ready to go 'sooner than later,' according to executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Footballguys view: Dunbar may begin the start of training camp on the PUP list, but he could be ready for the start of the regular season. A change-of-pace back only, Dunbar may get a bit of playing time when rookie bellcow Ezekiel Elliott needs a breather. Dunbar's improved status does little to dampen our excitement for Elliott in 2016.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain could stick around    Mon Jul 18, 05:16 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain may not be done as a Cowboy, according to owner Jerry Jones. Jones believes Dallas hasn't seen the last of the linebacker despite his 10-game suspension and considering the fact that McClain is only under contract with Dallas for 2016. LB Justin Durant was signed to fill the void left by McClain's suspension.

Cowboys | Justin Durant re-signs with Dallas    Mon Jul 18, 03:29 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Justin Durant re-signed to a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Durant comes back to the Cowboys after one ho-hum year with the Falcons in 2015. He gives the team valuable veteran depth, and there's a chance he could start for them--especially with Rolando McClain suspended 10 games for violating the league's substance abuse policy.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain's future uncertain    Sat Jul 16, 01:14 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain's future with the Cowboys remains in limbo. Owner Jerry Jones has supported McClain even in light of the news of his 10-game suspension this season, but many in the organization want McClain released.

Footballguys view: It's another year and there's more trouble for McClain. Jones said releasing McClain would be difficult for the Cowboys financially. McClain signed a one-year, $4 million contract this offseason that included a $750,000 signing bonus.

Cowboys | Jack Crawford to contribute early    Fri Jul 15, 10:00 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE Jack Crawford is expected to pick up additional snaps at defensive tackle early in the year as DT Tyrone Crawford moves outside in place of DE Demarcus Lawrence and DE Randy Gregory, who will both be serving suspensions to start the year.

Footballguys view: It's all hands on deck for the Cowboys defensive line. We hope they don't suffer any injuries at the position in training camp as they're already incredibly thin.

Cowboys | Justin Durant in talks with Dallas    Mon Jul 11, 10:12 AM

Free-agent LB Justin Durant (Falcons) is in discussions with the Dallas Cowboys Monday, July 11, and could sign soon.

Footballguys view: Durant has been with the Cowboys before in 2013 and 2014. In those two seasons, he started 12 games for Dallas before moving on to the Falcons for the 2015 season. He was bad in 12 starts for the Falcons last year and hasn't attracted much interest on the open market. The Cowboys are desperate on defense with LB Rolando McClain suspended the first 10 games of 2016.

Cowboys | Gavin Escobar likely headed to PUP list    Sun Jul 10, 09:11 AM

Dallas Cowboys TE Gavin Escobar (Achilles') is expected to begin the season on the PUP list after suffering a torn right Achilles' tendon in Week 15 last year.

Footballguys view: Dynasty owners shouldn't be holding onto Escobar expecting much to happen with him now or in the future. He may be their second-best TE (by default), but we don't see Escobar as the heir apparent to Jason Witten. If he's on the PUP list to begin the season, Escobar would be forced to miss the first six weeks. After that time, the Cowboys would have three weeks to evaluate him and decide whether or not to shut him down for the year.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant's struggles more mental    Thu Jul 7, 07:50 PM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) said his hardships last season were more mental than physical. Bryant said he was off his game from a mental standpoint, and the waiting while he was injured was also difficult.

Footballguys view: Dez Bryant should be poised for a great season, and we expect WR1 numbers from him. Now, if only Tony Romo doesn't end up on a hospital gurney again this season.

Cowboys | DeMarcus Lawrence appeal denied    Thu Jun 30, 03:15 PM

Dallas Cowboys DE DeMarcus Lawrence's appeal on his four-game suspension has been denied, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Is there anyone left to play on defense? If the Cowboys get anyone else suspended or hurt, they might have to strap in Jerry Jones himself or the Cowboy mascot, Rowdy. Heck, if you're near Valley Ranch, check in--they might have a job for you.

Cowboys | Rolando McClain suspended 10 games    Thu Jun 30, 03:03 PM

Dallas Cowboys LB Rolando McClain was suspended 10 games Thursday, June 30, for violating the league's substance-abuse policy, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Is this a news post from 2015? No, it just seems like that since McClain was suspended part of last season as well. The Cowboys defense was already a huge concern and it continues to get worse in Dallas.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden story revised    Wed Jun 29, 12:38 PM

Updating previous reports, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) said he was injured in a slightly different way than the team, who said McFadden was injured trying to save his cell phone, released to the public. McFadden said his phone was in his hand, but he slipped down and fell on the elbow. He said he still has a few weeks in a brace after June 14 surgery, and it's possible he could miss the season opener.

Footballguys view: He didn't fumble the cell phone! That's McFadden's story and he's sticking to it. No matter the real cause of the fall, McFadden's status for the beginning of the regular season is up in the air. No matter as the Cowboys are going to force-feed rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott the rock in 2016. Veteran Alfred Morris will be Elliott's backup with McFadden down.

  Cowboys | Jaylon Smith's nerve hasn't improved    Wed Jun 29, 09:14 AM

Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith (knee) hasn't experienced significant improvement in the injured nerve in his knee, and playing in 2016 seems unlikely.

Footballguys view: There's no doubt that we're rooting for Smith. He was likely a top-10 pick before the injury (sustained on what many think was a dirty play), but now Smith may never be the same player. The Cowboys had to factor in the possibility of Smith missing his rookie season, so this news shouldn't surprise that much. However, it all comes down to next season. We're hoping that Smith can get healthy and become the star NFL player he looked like at Notre Dame.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott could see big workload    Tue Jun 28, 03:28 PM

Dallas Cowboys rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott could receive 280 to 300 carries in his rookie season, in the opinion of David Helman of dallascowboys.com.

Footballguys view: That number should make fantasy owners drool. The rookie RB has the upside to be one of the best in the game, and Elliott should make an immediate (and huge) impact in the NFL. The only RB to get 300 carries last year was Adrian Peterson (Vikings), and the next closest starter was Doug Martin (Buccaneers) at 288 carries. Elliott will be the centerpiece of the Cowboys offense in 2016, and he could easily finish the year as a top-5 fantasy RB. His current ADP is RB6 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cowboys | Tony Romo throwing well    Thu Jun 16, 04:08 PM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo (collarbone) said he's throwing as well as he ever has as he continues to recover from a broken collarbone and subsequent offseason surgery. He and the Cowboys will go over his schedule in training camp, and he may continue to take Wednesdays off depending on how his throwing feels each day. Romo did acknowledge that he can't ignore his injury history.

Footballguys view: Romo healthy is a beautiful thing for Cowboys fans, since without him this offense is a shadow of itself. We think Romo is in for a solid season, and rate him as a solid QB2. Right now his ADP is QB13 and he's going as the 108 player off the boards.

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) said he will be ready for the start of training camp. Bryant said he plans to work out with QB Tony Romo in the near future.

Footballguys view: The Cowboys cannot have a down year on offense again and Bryant is a huge factor in any success they have. We see him as a lock-it-in WR1 in fantasy as long as he and Tony Romo are healthy.

Cowboys | Ezekiel Elliott pushed into starting role    Wed Jun 15, 02:23 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Ezekiel Elliott took all the first-team repetitions in practice Tuesday, June 14, with RB Darren McFadden (elbow) out with a fractured elbow for two months. Elliott will remain the starting running back for all intents and purposes. 'I think it's going to be real big for him, really beneficial, because now he's forced to go in and do it,' running backs coach Gary Brown said of Elliott getting more first-team snaps. 'He's forced to go in there to perform and perform at a high level. He can't rest on his leader maybe helping him a little bit. He has to rest on himself. So it's going to be a good thing.' Offensive coordinator Scott Linehan called Elliott 'a full-package running back.'

Footballguys view: We expected this anyway, it was just sped along due to a millionaire not letting his cell phone hit the floor. If only McFadden had a "burner" phone like Jax Teller. Elliott will have a steep learning curve but we expect him to excel behind this offensive line. He's an RB1 easily this season.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden hurt in home accident    Tue Jun 14, 12:33 PM

Updating an earlier report, Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) required surgery on his elbow after he was injured in an accident at home.

Footballguys view: A dropped phone is reportedly the culprit. We've heard of everything, from slipping on McDonald's bags to tripping over a dog on the driveway....but dropping a phone and hurting your elbow takes the cake. McFadden is expected to miss two months and be ready by the end of training camp.

Cowboys | Darren McFadden undergoes surgery    Tue Jun 14, 12:20 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (elbow) underwent surgery on his elbow Tuesday, June 14, and is expected back in time for the season opener, according to head coach Jason Garrett.

Footballguys view: Looking up "injury prone" in the dictionary shows a picture of McFadden. He was competing for a role in the backfield with Ezekiel Elliott and Alfred Morris. At this time, it looks like the Cowboys will feature the rookie Elliott as their bellcow back. Morris is merely a veteran backup, and McFadden could be a change-of-pace back if/when healthy.

Cowboys | Dez Bryant limited in camp    Tue Jun 14, 11:54 AM

Dallas Cowboys WR Dez Bryant (foot) will not be a full participant in minicamp this week, and he'll mostly work on the side.
