Cardinals | Chris Johnson will have a role    Fri Jul 21, 09:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be on the field at the same time as RB David Johnson on occasion, head coach Bruce Arians said Friday, July 21. 'We've had it in the plan every year and one of the two always gets hurt all the damn time,' Arians said. 'But we'll have some two-back stuff with he and David back there'

Cardinals | Chris Johnson contract update    Fri Jul 21, 06:24 PM

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will receive a base salary of $1 million in his one-year contract. He is scheduled to receive $200,000 in guaranteed money and can make more with incentives.

Footballguys view: He's your handcuff for David Johnson, but nothing more barring injury.

Cardinals | Jarvis Jones may miss a few days    Fri Jul 21, 05:20 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Jarvis Jones (quadriceps) suffered a quadriceps injury during the run test Friday, July 21, and may miss a few days of practice, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson given one-year deal    Thu Jul 20, 03:18 PM

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Cardinals) was re-signed to a one-year deal by the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, July 20. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: No more than a backup, Johnson does give the Cardinals a little insurance in case something happens to David Johnson (no relation). David Johnson is the guy to have and we aren't even that excited about Chris Johnson as a handcuff unless you're looking for help late in your draft.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer threw too much last offseason    Thu Jul 20, 09:45 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer wore his arm out from throwing too much last offseason, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians said they've found a good routine for Palmer.

Footballguys view: The guy is 400 years old in football years, so making sure he doesn't overdo it is a good idea for a team with - at minimum - playoff aspirations. Without Palmer, the Cardinals have serious problems at quarterback so no Palmer probably equals no playoff success. While we think a healthy Palmer with a healthy receiving corps could make for a solid QB2, his ADP is showing that Fantasy GMs are skittish. Right now it hovers at 135 overall and Palmer is the 20th quarterback off the board making him a potential value at the moment.

Cardinals | Deone Bucannon hopes to be ready for Week 1    Wed Jul 19, 03:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Deone Bucannon (ankle) said he hopes to be ready to start in Week 1 but will not rush back to the lineup. Bucannon is still recovering from offseason ankle surgery.

Cardinals | Kerwynn Williams the backup    Sun Jul 16, 11:18 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Kerwynn Williams has earned the trust of head coach Bruce Arians and should serve as the primary backup to RB David Johnson, according to Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic.

Footballguys view: Williams and his big play ability have flashed here and there during his pro career. He's a speedy change-of-pace back behind Johnson and would get plenty of attention from fantasy owners if something were to happen to the Cardinals starter.

Cardinals | David Johnson ready for big workload    Sun Jul 16, 04:12 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson said he believes he can handle 30 touches per game like head coach Bruce Arians hopes to see this season. 'I feel like there's room for me to definitely carry more. I think the biggest thing is me learning and getting better and improving. So I feel like I can definitely get that 30 touches, not all rushing obviously, 30 touches per game,' Johnson said.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are going to use Johnson as the centerpiece of their offense once again this year. Fantasy owners know how valuable Johnson is as a runner and receiver out of the backfield and that's why he's at least a consideration for the no1 overall pick in any format.

Cardinals | John Brown ready for big season?    Sun Jul 16, 12:31 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown will be the main beneficiary of the departure of Minnesota Vikings WR Michael Floyd, according to Jordan Schultz of Yahoo! Sports. Floyd accounted for 88 targets for the Cardinals last season.

Footballguys view: Brown is going to be the Cardinals no2 WR opposite Larry Fitzgerald in 2017 and there should be more buzz about him. He had a lingering concussion and complications from sickle cell anemia that limited him during his 15 starts in 2016. He's at full strength now, and Brown should build on his 2015 season of 65 catches, 1,003 yards, and 7 touchdowns. He's WR42 (9.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians had surgery    Tue Jul 11, 04:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians (kidney) underwent surgery in February to remove a cancerous spot on his kidney. "Now I feel great," Arians writes. "My energy has returned. I'm told I'm cancer-free again. I'm ready for at least one more season of NFL football--maybe more."

Footballguys view: Arians is one of the best coaches in the league, and we're glad to hear that he's feeling better and cancer free. At 7-8-1 last year, Arians will be trying to bounce back from his first losing season as a head coach.

Cardinals | JJ Nelson working to improve    Thu Jul 6, 09:55 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR JJ Nelson spent to offseason working on his route running.

Footballguys view: Nelson is going to vie with Jaron Brown for snaps as the #3 receiver. His deep speed gives his best ball appeal even as a 3A, but if John Brown struggles to stay healthy again this year, Nelson will have value in typical redraft leagues.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald effective from slot    Thu Jul 6, 09:40 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald finished tied for second in the NFL last season with 63 catches from the slot.

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald is set up for another high reception, low yards per catch season with the Cardinals featuring speedy deep threats elsewhere at wide receiver. He's a value in PPR leagues at his current ADP.

Cardinals | Budda Baker not too far behind    Thu Jun 29, 10:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals S Budda Baker said he doesn't feel too far behind despite his college schedule preventing him from attending OTAs. 'The first couple days I was dying, but I got acclimated to it and now it's what, it's 100 out here right now, and I'm thinking it's cool,' Baker said.

Footballguys view: A second-round pick out of Washington this year, Baker had to sit out the offseason program due to the NFL rule requiring players to sit out until finals if their school is on a quarters system. Baker can be moved around from slot corner to roaming as a free safety, and his skill set was regularly compared to Tyrann Mathieu.

Cardinals | Retirement decision coming for Carson Palmer after 2017    Wed Jun 28, 08:21 PM

Kyle Odegard, from AZCardinals.com, reports Arizona Cardinals quarterback Carson Palmer is still invested in playing football. In a recent interview, Palmer revealed that he's not going to make any retirement decision until after the 2017 season. "I love every facet of it," Palmer said. "I don't want to stop. But I'll have to wait and make that decision after the season."

Footballguys view: Palmer isn't done just yet, and 2017 may not be his final year in the league...but it does look that way right now. The Cardinals are trying to make one more run with Palmer at the helm, and they'll be in the mix for the playoffs in 2017. They need Palmer to get off to a better start than he did last year if they want to secure themselves a postseason berth.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer unsure about future    Tue Jun 27, 07:12 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he is not ready to say how much longer he will play football.

Footballguys view: This may be the last hurrah for Palmer in 2017. The Cardinals don't really have a quarterback of the future on the roster as only Drew Stanton and Blaine Gabbert are on the depth chart behind Palmer. We did see Palmer play better as the 2016 wore on after getting off to a poor start. It will be interesting to see what kind of start he gets off to in 2017.

Cardinals | Haason Reddick should start right away    Thu Jun 22, 03:31 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie LB Haason Reddick is expected to start immediately over injured LB Deone Bucannon (ankle), according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com.

Footballguys view: Reddick can start right away and he can make an instant impact. In college at Temple, Reddick constantly made plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage. He's a bit undersized at 6'1" 237 pounds but he has great athleticism, burst and a knack for pressuring the quarterback.

Cardinals | Chad Williams likely No. 5 WR in 2017    Tue Jun 20, 11:51 PM

Arizona Cardinals third-round WR Chad Williams will likely begin the season as the team's fifth receiver, according to 98.7 Arizona's Mike Jurecki.

Footballguys view: Williams may be their fifth receiver now, but he could work his way up the depth chart. We love his upside in dynasty leagues and there has been a ton of reports out of Cardinals camp that have been overwhelmingly positive about the impression Williams is making.

Cardinals | Carlton Agudosi proving he belongs    Sun Jun 18, 12:56 AM

Cardinals | Arizona signs Haason Reddick    Thu Jun 8, 04:03 PM

Arizona Cardinals first-round pick LB Haason Reddick signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, June 8. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Reddick is capable of making plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage regularly. He's 6'1" and that's a concern in coverage but he's athletic enough to stay with tight ends or backs out of the backfield. Reddick's primary asset is his ability as a pass rusher.

Cardinals | John Brown dealing with injuries    Wed Jun 7, 04:10 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (hamstring) is dealing with a hamstring injury, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Brown's 2016 was marred with injuries and medical conditions. Hopefully this isn't related to the sickle cell trait that affected his hamstring last year. All of the news had been positive on Brown this offseason until this, so the comeback hype train should slow down a bit. Jaron Brown and JJ Nelson would get first crack at any snaps Brown gives up while he's sidelined, with rookie third-round pick Chad Williams also potentially on the fast track to playing time.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington going back to RB    Wed Jun 7, 02:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington is moving back to running back, and the team will be looking for him to have a tougher running style, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Well that didn't last long. Ellington was moved to wide receiver this offseason to make the most of his quickness, agility and speed in the open field. When John Brown is healthy, Jaron Brown as the no3 wideout and rookie Chad Williams impressing, Ellington gets moved back to the backfield. Having a tougher runner style just isn't in his DNA, and Ellington should only be used in space.

Cardinals | Jeremy Maclin doesn't interest Cards    Tue Jun 6, 11:50 AM

Free-agent WR Jeremy Maclin (Chiefs) hasn't received interest from the Arizona Cardinals, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Maclin does have interest from the Bills and the Ravens. Those two teams are more WR-starved than the Cardinals. With WR John Brown healthy and former RB Andre Ellington playing wideout the team has good depth at the position behind Larry Fitzgerald.

Cardinals | John Brown back to old self    Sat Jun 3, 11:38 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown is back to running routes like he did in 2015, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'A couple of those routes he ran, he did not run one route like that last year,' Arians said. 'Knock on wood, it stays that way.'

Footballguys view: Brown was limited in 2016 due to sickle cell complications and lingering effects from a concussion. Now healthy, it's not outlandish to expect Brown to at least bounce back to the production he had in 2015 (65 catches, 1,003 yards, and 7 touchdowns.) His current ADP is WR46 (10.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald impressed by Chad Williams    Tue May 30, 10:49 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Chad Williams received some lofty praise from a likely Hall-of-Famer Tuesday, May 30, as WR Larry Fitzgerald said the third-round pick reminds him of former teammate Anquan Boldin in terms of the strength of their hands.

Footballguys view: It seems like every other day there's a positive story about the rookie WR from Grambling State. That's a message, and Williams is clearly a player fantasy owners need to be dialed in on. Behind Fitzgerald, the team will utilize John Brown as a speedy field-stretcher. Williams and his acrobatics (plus great hands) could be worked in at least as a red-zone threat in 2017. In dynasty leagues, we are all over his stock.

Cardinals | Coach impressed with Chad Williams    Mon May 29, 07:02 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Chad Williams was impressive during organized team activities this past week, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: From Grambling State, to the Senior Bowl, to Cardinals OTAs it seems like Williams is impressing at every stop. Williams was the centerpiece of the Grambling offense, and he's used to a heavy target load. His body control, concentration on passes above his head (or near the sideline) and athleticism are a sight to be seen. However, the rookie needs work on his route-running ability, and adjusting to low passes is something else that needs attention.

Cardinals | Robert Nkemdiche making strong impression    Sat May 27, 11:18 AM

Arizona Cardinals DL Robert Nkemdiche has 'changed ... for the good', according to teammate and veteran DE Frostee Rucker. Nkemdiche began showing up at the team's facility to work out shortly after the end of last season and he is among the defensive linemen getting in extra technique and conditioning work after the coaches head inside following that day's OTA.

Footballguys view: Nkemdiche has a ton of natural talent, but last year as a rookie he only made it through five games and had his work ethic called into question by head coach Bruce Arians. With DE Calais Campbell (Jaguars) leaving in free agency, the Cardinals defense need Nkemdiche to start playing up to his potential.

Cardinals | Jaron Brown taking part in drills    Wed May 24, 02:28 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Jaron Brown (knee) is participating in individual drills during organized team activities Wednesday, May 24.

Footballguys view: He is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament he suffered in October of 2016. Jaron Brown is competing for the no3 WR job behind Larry Fitzgerald and John Brown. He should be good to go for team activities in training camp.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald to address future at camp    Tue May 23, 12:08 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald said Monday, May 22, he plans on addressing his post-2017 future once during training camp and won't talk about it anymore after that.

Footballguys view: That sounds...ominous. We won't be surprised if Fitzgerald announces that 2017 is his final season in the NFL. Expect him to earn a Hall of Fame nod after he retires.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington learning new role    Sun May 21, 11:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Andre Ellington said the hardest part of his transition from running back to wide receiver is the change in terminology.

Footballguys view: The terminology is one thing, and the route-running is something else. Ellington was a hyper-fast/quick player as a running back, and at his new position we anticipate the team will set him up with short throws he could potentially turn into long gains. What kind of fantasy value Ellington has at wide receiver remains to be seen.

Cardinals | Arizona still believes in Troy Niklas    Sun May 21, 10:10 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Troy Niklas can still fulfill his potential if he can just stay healthy, head coach Bruce Arians said.

Footballguys view: With eight career catches in three years, the second-round pick (2014) out of Notre Dame shouldn't be seen as any sort of sleeper...even in the deepest of deep leagues.

Cardinals | Arizona signs Chad Williams    Thu May 18, 05:36 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Chad Williams signed his four-year rookie deal Thursday, May 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Williams performed well against lower-level competition at Grambling State, but he has talent that was on full display at the Senior Bowl earlier this year. He was heavily targeted in the Grambling offense and has crazy body control to pull in passes above his head or near the sideline. He needs work on his route-running ability, and adjusting to low passes is something else that needs attention.

Cardinals | LeGarrette Blount had offer from AZ    Wed May 17, 10:43 AM

Philadelphia Eagles RB LeGarrette Blount had an offer from the Arizona Cardinals before he agreed with the Eagles.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer noncommittal on future    Tue May 16, 02:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he has no idea if 2017 will be his last year in the NFL. He will evaluate himself when the season is over as he does every year.

Footballguys view: Palmer's time as a starter in the NFL is winding down as he's got a year or two left in our eyes. In 2016, Palmer passed for 4233 yards but his passing touchdown total dropped from 35 to 26. Last year, Palmer finished as the No. 16 fantasy quarterback in standard-scoring leagues. This year, fantasy owners are drafting Palmer at QB21 (13.10) and that should be fairly accurate as a projection of where he'll finish. Palmer is now more of a QB2 than he is a QB1 in fantasy leagues.

Cardinals | Deone Bucannon had surgery    Tue May 16, 01:36 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Deone Bucannon (ankle) recently underwent ankle surgery, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Bucannon's goal is to return to action by early September.

Footballguys view: Bucannon missed three games last year after suffering a high ankle sprain. This surgery was to clean up a lingering problem according to Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. With his Week 1 status in question, we could see Bucannon put on the PUP list to start the season. That would force him out the first six weeks of the regular season. After that, the Cardinals would have a three-week window to decide whether or not to activate Bucanon or put him on season-ending Injured Reserve.

Arizona Cardinals fifth-round draft choice OT Will Holden, fifth-round draft choice RB T.J. Logan and sixth-round draft choice CB Johnathan Ford signed four-year contracts Saturday, May 13. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Logan could be everything the team wanted WR Andre Ellington to be as a running back. The North Carolina back is compactly built and can change direction smoothly with the rock in his hands. He's not a banger between the tackles, but Logan is dangerous in space. Logan should compete for the backup/change-of-pace role behind superstar David Johnson in 2017.

Cardinals | Big things expected from Chad Williams    Fri May 12, 10:04 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Chad Williams is considered someone who can 'carry the torch' once WR Larry Fitzgerald decides to retire, according to offensive coordinator Harold Goodwin.

Footballguys view: Williams is not a burner, but he plays larger than his size (6'1") and can make dynamic catches seem routine. He needs work as a route runner and needs to add more strength to his frame, but Williams is a dynasty prospect we have eyes for.
