Cardinals | Arizona looking at Zack Moss    Tue Mar 31, 03:47 PM

Former Utah RB Zack Moss has been looked at by the Arizona Cardinals as an option for the 2020 NFL Draft, according to a source Tuesday, March 31.

Footballguys view: Moss should be a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft. The Utes running back has size at 223 pounds and is tough to bring down as a runner. On 66 career catches, Moss broke 33 tackles and showed that he is dangerous in space with good moves. He's not a threat to break off big runs, but he is consistent and powerful. Moss could be a bellcow back at the pro level and has drawn comparisons to Kareem Hunt (Browns) by some in the scouting community.

Cardinals | Arizona discussing DeAndre Hopkins' contract    Tue Mar 31, 03:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR DeAndre Hopkins has had 'some conversations' with general manager Steve Keim regarding his contract, according to chairman Michael Bidwill Tuesday, March 31.

Footballguys view: Hopkins has three years remaining on his deal and is going to get paid around $13 million annually. That's low for his skill set and production level that should continue with his new team. Reporters have speculated that Hopkins wants around $18-20 million per year, so you can see how far off the two sides are. Worst case scenario, Hopkins holds out for a new deal but chances of that seem low. We'll see if the Cardinals re-works his deal to get him more money.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake officially signs tender    Thu Mar 26, 06:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake officially signed his transition tag tender Thursday, March 26, according to sources.

Footballguys view: His transition tag means that Drake will make around $8.4 million in 2020. He's the lead back for the Cardinals and looked like a great fit last year after he was added via trade from the Dolphins. Drake is a RB1 for Fantasy GMs and should be a big piece of what the Cardinals do on offense in 2020.

Free-agent RB D.J. Foster (Cardinals) agreed to terms on one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 25. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Foster is a receiving weapon with a long injury history. He's quite capable of catching passes out of the backfield but the last two years his seasons with the Cardinals have ended on the Injured Reserve list. If healthy, Foster will compete to be a pass-catching option behind starter Kenyan Drake.

Free-agent QB Brett Hundley (Cardinals) agreed to terms on a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals Sunday, March 22. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hundley is staying with the team to give them veteran depth behind Kyler Murray. He once had intriguing dynasty potential (in super deep leagues) but those days are behind him. We'll see if the Cardinals add another quarterback to compete with Hundley for the backup job in the 2020 NFL draft.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake signs transition tender    Sat Mar 21, 12:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Kenyan Drake on Saturday, March 21, signed his transition-tag tender offer.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals didn't want to lose Drake, so that's why they put the transition tag on him. With David Johnson traded away to the Texans, this is clearly Drake's backfield and he's an RB1 for Fantasy GMs in this fast-break offense. Signing a longer-term deal also remains a possibility for Drake this offseason.

Cardinals | DeAndre Hopkins surprisingly dealt to Arizona    Mon Mar 16, 01:32 PM

Houston Texans WR DeAndre Hopkins and a 2021 fourth-round draft pick were traded to the Arizona Cardinals in exchange for RB David Johnson, a 2020 second-round pick and a 2021 fourth-round pick on Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Cardinals. They get to ship off David Johnson's contract and they get a superstar receiver in return. The Cardinals were rumored to be in the WR market, but most assumed that it was going to be for a rookie in the first round. Now, they can turn their attention to Offensive Tackle in the first round of the 2020 NFL draft. Hopkins is great news for QB Kyler Murray and RB Kenyan Drake.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake has transition tag    Mon Mar 16, 11:21 AM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake received the transition tag Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals want to work something out with Drake and the transition tag gives them right of refusal if another team wants to sign him away. We'll see if they can trade away David Johnson, although his contract makes that highly unlikely. Drake was fantastic as their lead back and provides RB1 value for Fantasy GMs returning in the same role in 2020.

Cardinals | Arizona to target a receiver?    Sun Mar 8, 10:09 PM

Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy, Alabama WR Henry Ruggs III and Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb 'are definitely in play' for the Arizona Cardinals with the No. 8 pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury. 'I'm always looking for a fast outside guy,' Kingsbury said.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have a fast-break offense and they need playmakers at the wide receiver position. They did draft three receivers last year (Hakeem Butler, Andy Isabella, KeeSean Johnson) but could go back to the well in the first round this year.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake looking for lucrative deal    Fri Feb 28, 04:43 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake is believed to be looking for $8 million to $10 million per season in his next contract.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals can't afford that if they are also carrying David Johnson and his 10.2 million dollar salary this year. Drake may find he has to accept less than that with the cautionary tale about big running back contracts lately.

Cardinals | Arizona meets with top WR prospects    Wed Feb 26, 05:26 PM

Oklahoma WR CeeDee Lamb, Alabama WR Jerry Jeudy and Alabama WR Henry Ruggs III met with the Arizona Cardinals at the NFL Scouting Combine.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are not done adding wide receiver talent even though the position is a bit jam-packed with the three receivers (Andy Isabella, KeeSean Johnson, Hakeem Butler) they selected last year in the draft. None of those guys are as talented as the top receivers in this class. Lamb has some DeAndre Hopkins to his game and can make difficult catches seem routine. Jeudy is a crisp route-runner who can get open with ease. Ruggs is a speedy wide receiver who reminds some in the scouting community of Tyreek Hill. We'll see if the Cardinals want one of these guys with their No.8 overall pick.

Cardinals | Arizona wants Kenyan Drake back    Tue Feb 25, 04:56 PM

Impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake is wanted back by the team, according to head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim Tuesday, Feb. 25. 'We'd love to have him back, he's a perfect fit for our offense,' Kingsbury said. 'He's certainly a guy we would like to have back but again not sure what the market is going to do,' said Keim.

Footballguys view: Drake fit in nicely with the Cardinals last year. He's unlikely to go anywhere and we expect the Cardinals to get something done with the free agent back before he hits the open market.

Cardinals | David Johnson still valued    Tue Feb 25, 04:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is still valued by the team, according to general manager Steve Keim Tuesday, Feb. 25. 'He's a guy who's shown he can do it,' Keim said. 'I think because of the success that Kenyan (Drake) had, because of the success Chase (Edmonds) had, I think that's something that will be a chip on his shoulder. He's going to want to come back and play well and again because of his skillset, he's such a big talented athlete, we certainly think he can jump back in and do some good things for us.'

Footballguys view: Yeah, he's still valued...but the team has to say that because his contract is so bad that he can't be traded and it's way too expensive to cut him. Johnson has a cap hit of $14.1 million in 2020 and there is a whopping $16.2 million remaining in dead money.

Cardinals | David Johnson could be traded    Sun Feb 16, 10:17 AM

The Arizona Cardinals could trade RB David Johnson during the offseason if they decide to give impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake the franchise tag or sign him to a contract extension, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Footballguys view: Who in the world would want that contract? Cardinals GM Steve Keim has already said that cutting Johnson is 'not an option' due to the salary cap ramifications. Johnson has a 2020 cap number of $14.1 million and there is $16.2 million remaining in dead money.

Cardinals | Kenyan Drake has talked deal with Cards    Fri Feb 14, 03:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent RB Kenyan Drake has had some contract talks with the Cardinals since the end of the season, and general manager Steve Keim said he has told Drake that the team wants him back.

Footballguys view: This seems like a foregone conclusion. Drake had fantastic success as the Cardinals starter and they should continue forward with him as the lead back. Due to salary cap restraints, the team is also likely to keep David Johnson around for the 2020 season.

Cardinals | Patrick Peterson contract talks ongoing    Fri Feb 14, 11:09 AM

Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson has had initial contract talks, according to general manager Steve Keim. Peterson is entering the final year of his contract.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate that Peterson wants to finish his career with the Cardinals. We'll see if the two sides can work something out for the star veteran. He had a 2019 to forget, largely because of the suspension that caused him to miss six games but Peterson looked more like himself down the stretch.

Cardinals | David Johnson won't be cut    Fri Feb 14, 11:08 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is not an option to be cut, according to general manager Steve Keim. 'You can't just have one back,' Keim said.

Footballguys view: There is over $16 million in dead money remaining on Johnson's contract. That means they're not going to release him and it makes trading him almost impossible. Kenyan Drake is set to be an unrestricted free agent but the Cardinals should keep him around with a new contract. That means Johnson is likely to stay as a reserve player behind Drake in 2020.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones understands trade    Sat Feb 8, 12:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones says he understands why the New England Patriots traded him to the Cardinals in 2016. 'When I spoke to Bill (Belichick) when I got traded, he told me it was best for the team; this was the best decision for our team,' Jones recently told Jeff Howe of The Athletic. 'At the time, I didn't understand. That next year, they won the Super Bowl, so I did understand that was best for the team -- saved money, and they actually went and won. There were no hard feelings at all. I understood it's a business and it was what was best for the team.'

Cardinals | David Johnson nearing the end in Arizona?    Thu Feb 6, 12:29 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is scheduled to earn $10.2 million in 2020, with the entire amount guaranteed on the third day of the new league year. In the opinion of ESPN's Josh Weinfuss, it is possible Johnson will be a cap casualty with his 'production and contract going in opposite directions.'

Footballguys view: There is $16.2 million remaining in dead money on Johnson's deal. That's going to be a tough pill to swallow for the Cardinals if they do cut the veteran back. His contract is also going to be difficult to trade.

Cardinals | Chris Streveler inks future contract    Tue Feb 4, 04:25 PM

Former CFL QB Chris Streveler signed a future contract for the 2020 season with the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Footballguys view: Streveler was known as a running quarterback in the CFL, and that's the skill set he could bring to the Cardinals. Every team is trying to find their version of Saints QB Taysom Hill. Perhaps Streveler is that guy for Arizona.

Cardinals | Kyler Murray in rare company    Sat Jan 25, 09:18 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray finished the 2019 season with 3,722 passing yards, 544 rushing yards, 24 total touchdowns and 12 interceptions, joining Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton as the only rookie quarterbacks in NFL history to pass for at least 3,500 yards and rush for at least 500 yards.

Footballguys view: Murray is off to a great start in the NFL...now the Cardinals just need to build a better team around him. It's clear the rookie was in command of his offense and that comfort level in the pros should continue this year. Murray finished as the No.9 fantasy quarterback in standard scoring leagues as a rookie. He's a clear QB1 for Fantasy GMs and could finish 2020 as a top-10 fantasy quarterback once again.

Cardinals | Kyler Murray hasn't closed door to baseball    Sat Jan 18, 07:04 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray hasn't necessarily given up on playing the sport of baseball. In an interview with The Arizona Republic's Bob McManaman, Murray said that he thinks that he would be capable of playing in the NFL and MLB in the same calendar year. 'I think I could. ... Athletically, I think yeah, I could do it. I've been playing both my whole life. I would love to add that to the resume.'

Footballguys view: That's an...interesting...response from Murray who was a top-10 pick for the Oakland A's. Murray is not prohibited from playing baseball by the Cardinals but doing so would void future guarantees in his contract.

Updating previous reports, Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's one-year contract for 2020 will include a base salary of $11 million and will have $500,000 in roster bonuses and $250,000 in incentives.

Footballguys view: We're so happy that Fitzgerald is going to keep playing in 2020. He has to like what Kliff Kingsbury is bringing to the table and will continue to serve as a veteran leader.

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent WR Larry Fitzgerald re-signed with the Cardinals on a one-year deal Wednesday, Jan. 15. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: We're happy to see Fitzgerald continue his pro career for a 17th season. Fitzgerald must like what is happening under Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury and he provides the team with valuable leadership and veteran depth at the position. He played 903 snaps for the Cardinals in 2019 but that number might go down as he ages and younger Cardinals WRs elevate their game.

Cardinals | David Johnson contract outlook    Mon Jan 13, 09:36 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is due to count $14.156 million against the 2020 salary cap. Moving on from him would cost the Cardinals $16.2 million in dead money.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have an interesting decision coming up with Johnson. Should the Cardinals wait until 2021 to part ways with Johnson, the dead money will be only $3 million with a savings of $9 million. Arizona would have to eat $6 million of remaining prorated signing bonus money if Johnson is traded.
