Cardinals | Carson Palmer sees ticking clock    Fri May 22, 09:34 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) understands that at age 35, with two knee reconstructions under his belt, time is ticking, according to Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. Palmer has been rehabbing diligently, exceeding expectations six months following surgery, and has a sense of urgency, Arians said.

Footballguys view: We're not saying Palmer's biological clock is huge, but Terrance Knighton is hanging off the minute hand. This season could be the best shot the Cardinals have with Palmer to make a deep postseason run. He's under contract through the 2018 season.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer held out of drills    Tue May 19, 06:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) was held out of 11-on-11 drills Tuesday, May 19, during organized team activities. Palmer did, however, participate in 7-on-7 drills.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals need Palmer to stay healthy if they want to make a deep postseason run in 2015. He's going to wear a brace this year in order to help stabilize his knee, and we don't think that will slow him down. Palmer called himself "rusty" after 7-on-7 drills, but he should be able to quickly shake off that rust as he continues to recover.

Cardinals | Michael Floyd praised by HC    Tue May 19, 03:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd was recognized for his conditioning by head coach Bruce Arians during organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Floyd's numbers fell last year compared to what he did in 2013. He caught 47 passes for 841 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2014. Fantasy owners are looking for Carson Palmer to stay healthy this year, and that should help the Cardinals offense perform better as a whole.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer will wear brace    Tue May 19, 03:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) will wear a knee brace this season as he continues to recover from surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Palmer has never been a running quarterback, so we don't think the brace will impact his game much. He's been limited this offseason, but Palmer should be ready to roll once training camp gets here.

Cardinals | Ifeanyi Momah likely to make team    Mon May 18, 07:01 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Ifeanyi Momah has a good chance to make the team's final roster following the retirement of TE John Carlson. Momah is likely to make the full-time switch to tight end, after playing wide receiver in high school and college. Momah is expected to earn a spot on the Cardinals' depth chart behind tight ends Troy Niklas and Darren Fells.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Momah can make the final roster, but we're not expecting him to be much of a fantasy factor--even for fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues. Momah was an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2013. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and was released during final cuts. Last year he spent time with the Browns and the Lions.

Cardinals | Sign Gerald Christian    Mon May 18, 05:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie TE Gerald Christian signed a four-year deal Monday, May 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Christian was the NFL's "Mr. Irrelevant" as the final pick in the 2015 NFL draft. He's a talented move tight end who can make difficult catches seem routine. Christian is not a great blocker and is not on a team that uses the tight end that much. He'll be a longshot to make the final roster, but he has an intriguing skill set.

Cardinals | David Johnson signs with AZ    Mon May 18, 05:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie RB David Johnson signed an undisclosed deal Monday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a big back who can grind down opponents as the game goes on. He's a determined runner with an efficient style. Johnson's not going to break any ankles in the open field, but he can run through arm tackles consistently. He'll make for a power change-of-pace back behind Andre Ellington this year.

Cardinals | David Johnson praised by HC    Sat May 16, 01:51 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie RB David Johnson was recently lauded by head coach Bruce Arians. '[He's] very, very bright. The kid can do anything as far as a wide receiver, running back, full back,' Arians said. 'He will find a niche quick because he can learn so much.'

Footballguys view: Johnson should work well as a power complementary back behind Andre Ellington. He's a swift runner with a determined style. There's not a lot of nuance to his game, but Johnson can be counted on when tough yards are needed.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington aided by new RB?    Wed May 13, 03:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington said the selection of rookie RB David Johnson will give him more rest time and keep the offense upbeat.

Footballguys view: Early reports indicate that Ellington will still be the lead back, but the Cardinals will employ some form of RBBC this season. Johnson is a rhythm runner who can grind down an opponent as the game goes on. Ellington's current ADP is RB19 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Alfonzo Dennard claimed    Thu May 7, 03:06 AM

New England Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard was picked up off waivers by the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, May 6.

Footballguys view: Dennard has battled injuries over the course of his pro career, hampering his development. He has shown some moments, especially in press coverage, so the Cardinals could find a larger than expected role for him. Of course, he needs to stay healthy in order to start playing up to his potential.

Cardinals | Troy Niklas due for big year?    Tue May 5, 05:49 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Troy Niklas has much expected from him this season, especially following the retirement of TE John Carlson.

Footballguys view: A big year? Arizona tight ends do next to nothing under head coach Bruce Arians. Last year, Carlson had a 'big year' with 33 catches for 350 yards and one touchdown. There are plenty of other teams we're plucking fantasy tight ends from, Arizona is not one of them.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham a possibility for AZ?    Tue May 5, 04:11 PM

Former Cincinnati Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham (back) could be targeted by the Arizona Cardinals if he is medically cleared, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports.

Footballguys view: Gresham isn't cleared medically, and that's why he's currently without a team. Let's no go overboard with the connection to Arizona here. Yes, the Cardinals could have interest...and they may even bring the veteran on board. However, tight ends don't do much under head coach Bruce Arians and any Cardinals tight end isn't going to be much of a fantasy factor in 2015.

Cardinals | David Johnson to see red-zone work?    Tue May 5, 02:37 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson could be the man to beat for the No. 2 running back spot in Arizona, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com. Johnson would primarily play in red-zone and third-down situations, while RB Andre Ellington would still be the primary ball carrier.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a dangerous weapon, and the Cardinals are not going to eliminate him from being a big part of the offense just because they drafted Johnson. We like Johnson as a banger between the tackles and a player who can grind down opponents. The Cardinals will use a RBBC with Ellington as the lead back and Johnson as a power change-of-pace back. His workload near the goal line could make him a decent fantasy option in TD-only leagues.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer does drills    Tue May 5, 08:31 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) participated in on-field drills with the team Monday, May 4. He handed the ball off to the running backs and threw short, intermediate and deep throws to his receivers. While the action wasn't close to replicating game-like conditions, Palmer said joining the rest of the team on the field was a big mental boost after missing the last eight games of the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Cardinals here. They just aren't the same without Palmer, and they need him if they want to make a big push for the postseason again this year.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington set for similar role    Sun May 3, 08:02 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's role in 2015 will be similar to the role he had last season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Ellington's role could be a bit smaller than it was last year. The team was looking for a power back to complement Ellington, and that's why they selected David Johnson (Northern Iowa) in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. We should see Johnson carry the load when tough yardage is needed, while Ellington should serve as the big-play back as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. We love Ellington, but he's not built to be a workhorse running back in the NFL.

Cardinals | David Johnson nabbed by Cards    Fri May 1, 10:59 PM

The Arizona Cardinals selected Northern Iowa RB David Johnson in Round 3 (No. 86 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We like this pick for the Cardinals. Johnson was impressive on film and at the 2015 Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year. He's the big power back that Arizona has been looking for. Johnson has the size to be a lead back, but we like him best as a hammer in a RBBC. Andre Ellington will still get plenty of use in the Cardinals high-powered offense.

Cardinals | Michael Floyd may be on trade block    Fri May 1, 04:27 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd is a player the Cardinals are willing to discuss in a trade, but no team has contacted them.

Footballguys view: That's surprising on both ends. With Larry Fitzgerald aging, why trade Floyd? An odd rumor, we'll see what comes of it.

  Cardinals | D.J. Humphries selected 24th overall    Thu Apr 30, 10:43 PM

Florida OT D.J. Humphries was selected 24th overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals continue to build their offensive line with this pick. Humphries is very athletic and has the footwork to mirror pass-rushers on the outside.

Cardinals | Michael Floyd's option exercised    Wed Apr 29, 06:34 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd's fifth-year option is being picked up, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This wasn't considered a sure thing by some, even though the 7.3 million dollar price tag is not too high for a starting wide receiver. Floyd disappeared at times last year, but he has #1 WR ability when he is on his game.

Cardinals | John Brown adding weight    Fri Apr 24, 10:45 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown has added 10 pounds this offseason and is up to 183 pounds. Brown said the long season took a toll on his body, and he wanted to add weight.

Footballguys view: John Brown emerged as a potential long-term replacement for Larry Fitzgerald, though clearly with less skill. Both players were targeted 103 times last season, with Fitzgerald gaining more total yards (784 to 696) but Brown with a great yards per catch average and more touchdowns (5 to 2). Getting himself into better shape and working on his durability will help Brown increase his numbers, as will the return of Carson Palmer. Brown is a good guy to watch for as a WR3 or WR4 for fantasy owners.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington making progress    Thu Apr 23, 02:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's (foot) injured foot is about 95 percent healed, and Ellington has not suffered any setbacks, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Ellington toughed it out through injury last year as he was not healthy for the entire season. We love his talent and game-breaking ability, but Ellington is not built to be a full-time back. Expect the Cardinals to add another back (potentially a RB1) with a premium pick in the draft.

Cardinals | Adrian Wilson to retire and coach?     Mon Apr 20, 07:17 AM

Free-agent SS Adrian Wilson (Bears) is expected to retire Monday, April 20, and join the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff. The Cardinals, the team Wilson played for from 2001-2012, have announced a press conference.

Footballguys view: Wilson hasn't played in the NFL since 2012 after his failed comeback attempt with the Bears last year. He'll likely retire a member of the Cardinals and then join their staff in some capacity.

Cardinals | Drew Stanton could be limited    Sun Apr 19, 09:49 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton (knee) could be limited during offseason workouts since he is recovering from a knee injury, but he should be able to do some things during the workouts.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have no need to rush Stanton back. They'll ease him into action with a plan to have him near full strength at the start of training camp.

Cardinals | Jaron Brown continuing to recover    Fri Apr 17, 10:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Jaron Brown (shoulder) has been rehabbing his injured shoulder and said he hopes to be back up to speed for OTAs.

Footballguys view: Brown caught 22 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns last year for the Cardinals. When healthy, he'll continue to serve as a reserve receiver behind Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown.

Cardinals | Gabe Holmes visits    Fri Apr 17, 03:16 AM

Purdue TE Gabe Holmes visited the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday, April 16.

Footballguys view: Holmes is an interesting sleeper to keep an eye on in this poor class. A former basketball player, Holmes has the size/speed combination that will make teams drool. He has decent hands and is a good route-runner. Lack of experience at the position could keep him a priority free agent. Durability is also a concern after he missed the entire 2013 season due to a dislocated left wrist.

Link to story

Cardinals | Brett Hundley to visit    Thu Apr 9, 02:04 PM

UCLA QB Brett Hundley is scheduled to meet with the Arizona Cardinals next week.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals know they only have a little time left with Carson Palmer and it is unlikely they have the answer for the future on their roster right now--sorry Logan Thomas dynasty owners. Hundley has a lot of work to do as a passer and he pulls the ball down too quickly to run. He is more of a project than some think--but the Cardinals would have time to work with him and try to fashion him into a starter.

Cardinals | Breshad Perriman visiting with Cards    Wed Apr 8, 01:15 PM

Central Florida WR Breshad Perriman is scheduled to meet with the Arizona Cardinals before the 2015 NFL Draft, according to sources.

Footballguys view: At 6'2" 215 pounds, Perriman is more explosive than other receivers his size. He can get off the line of scrimmage quickly and cleanly, and Perriman does a good job maintaining his speed out of the break. He's raw as a route-runner, but his physical skill set make him an intriguing option for teams in the late first or early second round. The Cards are a bit jam-packed at wide receiver with Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd, John Brown and Jaron Brown. Perriman is a downfield threat...something Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians can't get enough of.

Cardinals | A.Q. Shipley in mixed for center job    Mon Apr 6, 10:34 PM

Arizona Cardinals C A.Q. Shipley was signed during the offseason to compete for the vacant starting center job. He is likely to have to battle OG Ted Larsen for the gig. Free-agent C Lyle Sendlein also could be brought back.

Cardinals | Ted Larsen might be candidate for C    Mon Apr 6, 10:33 PM

Arizona Cardinals OG Ted Larsen might be a candidate for the starting center job after he did a solid job subbing for the injured C Lyle Sendlein during the preseason in 2014.

Cardinals | Jonathan Cooper unlikely to play C    Mon Apr 6, 10:33 PM

Arizona Cardinals OG Jonathan Cooper is not likely to be candidate for the center position, according to beat writer Darren Urban. He is expected to battle for the starting right guard spot, shifting over from left guard after the signing of OG Mike Iupati.

Cardinals | Door open for Lyle Sendlein    Mon Apr 6, 10:32 PM

Cardinals | Run game catered to Andre Ellington?    Sat Apr 4, 09:47 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's injuries last season forced the running game to be adjusted to the strengths of several different players, and head coach Bruce Arians believes stability at the position will improve the Arizona's rushing results.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a fine player, and he did a good job of playing through injury all last season. With a complementary back, Ellington should be able to stay healthier this year. Ellington is a big-play back with explosive playmaking ability.

Cardinals | John Crockett to work out for Arizona    Thu Apr 2, 08:44 AM

North Dakota State RB John Crockett will work out for the Arizona Cardinals, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are looking to upgrade their ground game, and Crockett could be an option for them in the 2015 NFL draft. Crocket has good patience and vision as a runner, but he is high cut and might not be able to get more than what's blocked for him at the pro level.

Cardinals | Chandler Harnish signs    Tue Mar 31, 03:41 PM

Free-agent QB Chandler Harnish (Vikings) signed an undisclosed deal with the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, March 31.

Footballguys view: Carson Palmer is still on the mend, so the team needed to add another arm to go along with Drew Stanton and Logan Thomas.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington's role won't be reduced    Fri Mar 27, 07:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington, who averaged 20.6 touches per game in 2014 before being injured, won't have his role reduced in 2015, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Ellington's role in the passing game may increase, too. Ellington was often limited in practices during the week last year because of his foot injury.

Footballguys view: His role will depend on who they add at the running back position in the draft. The Cardinals may even be in line to trade for Adrian Peterson (Vikings) if he's on the trade block.

Cardinals | Big season for Larry Fitzgerald?    Thu Mar 26, 10:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and QB Carson Palmer were finally on the same page last season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners take note here. Fitzgerald could post decent fantasy numbers so long as Palmer stays upright. The Cardinals season fell apart last year after Palmer went down. They hope to avoid the same fate this season.

Cardinals | Lyle Sendlein wanted back    Thu Mar 26, 07:53 AM

Free-agent C Lyle Sendlein (Cardinals) is wanted back on the team by the Arizona Cardinals. The team would likely offer a contract with a reduced cap number.

Footballguys view: Sendlein will mostly be a backup as AQ Shipley played very well for the Colts in a handful of games last season as a center, as well as a few as a guard. Consider Sendlein as a cheap backup at best.

Cardinals | Sign Ifeanyi Momah    Wed Mar 25, 03:05 PM

Free-agent TE Ifeanyi Momah (Lions) signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 25. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: This is the second player the Cardinals have signed from the veteran combine. Momah will likely contribute on special teams if he makes the final roster.

Cardinals | Jonathan Cooper moving to RG    Mon Mar 23, 11:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals OG Jonathan Cooper will move to right guard following the addition of OG Mike Iupati in free agency. 'It's not a reflection on Coop. I'm as high on Coop as ever,' general manager Steve Keim said Monday, March 23.

Cardinals | Nathan Slaughter agrees    Mon Mar 23, 01:46 PM

Free-agent WR Nathan Slaughter (Jaguars) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the Arizona Cardinals Monday, March 23.

Footballguys view: Slaughter spent time with both the Texans and the Jaguars last year as an undrafted rookie out of West Texas A&M. He can contribute as a slot receiver or return man for the Cardinals if he makes the final roster.

Cardinals | Arizona willing to trade for Peterson?    Fri Mar 20, 02:22 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson remains unhappy with the Vikings. The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly willing to offer a high draft pick in return for Peterson, if he becomes available.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are in a Super Bowl window, and they want to upgrade their rushing attack. Adding Peterson would swing the power balance in the NFC. We love Andre Ellington, but he's not built to be a featured back. If Arizona adds Peterson they'll be able to run the ball with authority while playing suffocating defense. So long as Carson Palmer stays healthy, Arizona could make a deep playoff run.

Cardinals | ARI meets with Melvin Gordon    Tue Mar 17, 07:02 AM

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon met with the Arizona Cardinals representatives on Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Gordon is likely to be a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The Cardinals want to find help for Andre Ellington in the backfield, and Gordon would do just that. A workhorse in college at Wisconsin, Gordon has a great blend of size and speed. He makes one cut and can explode into the second level of the defense. Gordon is not a power back, but his speed makes him a big-play threat every time he touches the ball.

Cardinals | ARI saying no to Adrian Peterson?    Tue Mar 17, 02:07 AM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson may not be going to the Arizona Cardinals. A reliable source close to the team has said the Cardinals wouldn't add Peterson with three years and $45 million left on his contract.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are looking for upgrades to the running back position, and Peterson would certainly help--but for a huge price. The Cowboys could be the team that's most interested in acquiring Peterson at this time.

Cardinals | Help coming for Andre Ellington?    Mon Mar 16, 09:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington dealt with several injuries last season, and general manager Steve Keim said that the Cardinals 'definitely need to shore up' the running back position.

Footballguys view: We love Andre Ellington, but the truth is the guy is not built to carry a full workload in the NFL. It's wise for the Cardinals to be looking for additional help at the position. Depending on the quality level of the help, Ellington's fantasy value could be heavily impacted or just slightly altered. From the backs they're looking at, it seems like Arizona wants to find a workhorse and make Ellington a change-of-pace back. That would dramatically alter his fantasy value -- stay tuned.
