Cardinals | Sean Weatherspoon leaves early    Sat Aug 1, 07:55 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Sean Weatherspoon left practice early Saturday, Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: Weatherspoon is coming off an Achilles' injury, but he didn't miss any time in organized team activities. It is unclear what caused Weatherspoon's departure.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer stronger    Sat Aug 1, 03:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has supposedly improved his arm strength since last season. Palmer is much healthier overall, as well, including his knee and shoulder.

Footballguys view: This should be expected from the veteran quarterback. If his shoulder and knee can hold up, Palmer should be able to lead the Cardinals to the playoffs. Fantasy owners should consider Palmer a QB2 and occasional starter.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer not limited    Fri Jul 31, 06:00 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) has been cleared to participate in practice and will not be limited during training camp or preseason games.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Cardinals here. The team fell apart when Palmer went down with injury last year. They're a playoff team, but not without Palmer on the field.

Free-agent WR Damond Powell (Cardinals) was placed on Reserve/Injured Wednesday, July 29.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham placed on PUP list    Wed Jul 29, 05:26 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham (back) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 29.

Footballguys view: Gresham was signed last week, but the back surgery he had earlier this year is going to slow him down in camp. Expect the Cardinals to be cautious with the veteran as he continues to recover.

Cardinals | Damond Powell waived    Tue Jul 28, 05:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Damond Powell (face) was waived from the Non-Football Injury list Tuesday, July 28.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of the University of Iowa earlier this year, Powell was shot in the face last week sitting in a car. The injuries he sustained are not life-threatening

Cardinals | AZ adds Jermaine Gresham    Fri Jul 24, 07:21 PM

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Bengals) agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Friday, July 24, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Gresham was getting interest from a few teams, and he even had a standing offer from the Saints, but he decided to sign with the Cardinals. Fantasy owners should realize there's not much fantasy potential with this team. Bruce Arians doesn't utilize the tight end as a target in his offense.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham meets with Arizona    Wed Jul 22, 12:22 PM

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (back) met with the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, July 21, but the two sides have not agreed to a deal at this point. Gresham underwent back surgery earlier this offseason, and it is not known if the Cardinals' doctors were comfortable with his health. Gresham may decide to meet with other teams before making a decision.

Footballguys view: Earlier reports indicated the Saints had an offer on the table for the veteran tight end. Gresham had back surgery back in March, and he may not be as healthy as some teams want in order to bring him on board. We'll see some team add him...perhaps before the start of training camp.

Cardinals | AZ hosting Jermaine Gresham    Mon Jul 20, 03:38 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham (Cardinals) will visit the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, July 21.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals (and the Saints) seem to be the most interested in Gresham right now. The veteran tight end is currently recovering from back surgery he underwent earlier this offseason. We'll see him find a spot on a roster before the start of the regular season...maybe before the start of training camp. If he lands in Arizona, Gresham won't be much of a fantasy factor as Bruce Arians doesn't use his tight ends that often.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham to visit Arizona    Sun Jul 19, 11:38 AM

Free-agent TE Jermaine Gresham will visit the Arizona Cardinals at some point during the week of Monday, July 20, according to a source apprised of his plans.

Footballguys view: Gresham is recovering from back surgery he had earlier this year, but he should get a few teams interested when he's healthy enough to pass a physical. The veteran tight end plans to meet with additional teams and to find a new home by training camp.

Cardinals | John Brown working with QB    Fri Jul 17, 07:30 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown has been working out with QB Carson Palmer in order to perfect their timing and make sure they are on the same page.

Footballguys view: Brown is a speedy receiver who can get on top of a defense in a hurry. Working with Palmer will help the timing and chemistry that is necessary for deep targets. We like him as a WR4 for your fantasy team.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer working out    Thu Jul 16, 01:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) has been working out with WR John Brown in California since the end of offseason workouts and said that he not had any problems with his surgically repaired knee. QB Drew Stanton and TEs Troy Niklas and Ifeanyi Momah have also participated in some of the workouts, while Palmer said WRs Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd could take part in some future workouts.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals can make a run in the postseason if Palmer is healthy. If not, the team can play great defense but they'll struggle to move the ball offensively. It sounds like Palmer's recovery has gone well, and he'll be good to go for the start of the regular season.

Cardinals | J.J. Nelson needs to use his speed    Thu Jul 9, 06:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR J.J. Nelson is being encouraged by the team to show off his speed when training camp opens July 28. 'He still can't run as fast as he probably will next year, when he's not thinking,' Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said. 'You kind of limit his role to where he can play fast and when he's not thinking at all,' said Arians.

Cardinals | Michael Floyd bothered by hamstring    Wed Jun 10, 09:07 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd (hamstring) missed practice due to a minor hamstring injury Wednesday, June 10, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: This is a minor injury, so don't get too concerned. After a breakout season in 2013 where he ranked as the 23rd-best fantasy wide receiver, Floyd's production fell in 2014. Last year, he ranked as the 33rd-best fantasy wide receiver in what was a disappointing season. A big part of that was losing QB Carson Palmer to a knee injury. This year--with a healthy Palmer--Floyd could be in for a bounce-back season. His current ADP is WR35 (7.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | David Johnson represents safety net    Wed Jun 10, 07:38 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson was praised by head coach Bruce Arians for his work in the receiving game. RB Andre Ellington excelled as a receiver in 2014, but his difficulties staying healthy would force Arians and the Cardinals to alter their game plan. Johnson is expected to allow for a much more seamless transition in the event of an Ellington injury.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a strong inside runner with the ability to consistently run through arm tackles. He's also a really good receiver out of the backfield. Johnson has the ability to be a full-time starter if needed. He'll work as a reserve runner/receiver behind Andre Ellington this year. Keep him on your waiver-wire speed dial in standard leagues where bench space is precious.

Cardinals | Troy Niklas injures ankle    Wed Jun 10, 02:08 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Troy Niklas (ankle) rolled his ankle during practice Tuesday, June 9, and is scheduled to undergo a minor procedure Thursday, June 11.

Footballguys view: Niklas (or any Cardinals tight end) doesn't have much fantasy value because of the nature of the offense. Head coach Bruce Arians said Niklas will be ready for the start of training camp.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer not limited    Tue Jun 9, 02:13 PM

Cardinals | David Johnson mirrors Andre Ellington    Tue Jun 9, 12:37 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is viewed as a similar back to RB Andre Ellington, and Johnson can do a lot of the same things on the field.

Footballguys view: Johnson can get more yards between the tackles than Ellington, but we get where this comparison comes from. The rookie is a fantastic receiver out of the backfield and can make plays in space--just like Ellington. The Cardinals will use a RBBC with Ellington as the lead back.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer cleared    Tue Jun 9, 09:56 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) was cleared for 11-on-11 work Tuesday, June 9.

Footballguys view: Palmer was injured in Week 10 last year, and he's been working hard to get back to form since then. The Cardinals 2014 season crashed and burned without Palmer under center, and it will do the same this year if he's banged up again. Everything seems on track to have Palmer in place as the Week 1 starter this season.

Cardinals | David Johnson impressing    Mon Jun 8, 09:07 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson has impressed the coaching staff and his teammates with his pass-catching ability during organized team activities (OTAs).

Footballguys view: This should not be a surprise. Johnson was a fantastic receiver in college at Northern Iowa. He caught over 30 passes each season of his four-year career, maxing out at 38 catches (2013, 2014).

Cardinals | Andre Ellington looking good    Mon Jun 8, 09:05 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) appears to be 100 percent during organized team activities (OTAs) after an injury-plagued 2014 season. He has been showing elusive quickness in practice.

Footballguys view: Great news for Ellington here. He worked hard last year to overcome that foot injury, and he never looked like himself in 2014. This season, Ellington will be aided by rookie RB David Johnson. Ellington won't have to do all the heavy lifting this season as the lead back in Arizona's RBBC.

Cardinals | Thomas not making expected progress    Sun Jun 7, 04:17 PM

Mike Jureki, from Fox Sports 910, reports via Twitter that he's hearing Arizona Cardinals QB Logan Thomas hasn't made the progress the coaching staff expected. Phillip Sims and Chandler Harnish are pushing Thomas for the third QB job.

Footballguys view: Nobody should really be surprised by this. Thomas arrived at Virginia Tech with huge upside and potential. During four seasons with the Hokies he never made that much progress as a quarterback, and he certainly never played up to his potential. Thomas was has size and arm strength, but he lacks polish and accuracy as a thrower. His decision making leaves a lot to be desired as well. Dynasty owners were carrying or monitoring Thomas, and they may never get much from him as a pro.

Cardinals | Jaron Brown close to returning    Thu Jun 4, 10:49 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Jaron Brown (shoulder) said the last X-ray he received showed his fractured left scapula is 90% healed, and he remains on track to be 100% when training camp begins.

Footballguys view: Brown didn't have to undergo surgery for the fractured shoulder blade he suffered in the playoff loss to the Panthers. If healthy, he should be the favorite to win the WR4 job for the Cardinals.

Cardinals | John Brown bulks up    Thu Jun 4, 01:22 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown changed his lifestyle during the offseason in an attempt to build up strength and stamina for the long haul. He has sworn off fast food and he added 10 pounds of muscle, mostly to his upper body, to help in press coverage.

Footballguys view: We could all do ourselves some good with a diet change. Brown has incredible speed down the field, and he tracks deep passes well. His current ADP is WR55 (12.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | D.J. Humphries signs    Mon Jun 1, 04:27 PM

Arizona Cardinals OT D.J. Humphries signed his four-year rookie deal Monday, June 1. The deal is worth $8.9 million with a $4.74 signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Humphries is an incredibly athletic tackle prospect with a quick initial kickstep after the snap. Even though he's athletic, Humphries has the mindset of a mauler. He's an aggressive player who does not back down from a challenge as a run-blocker. Humphries does need to work on his technique in pass-protection.

Cardinals | Kerwynn Williams not participating    Mon Jun 1, 02:21 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Kerwynn Williams (hamstring) is not participating in organized team activities with a hamstring injury.

Footballguys view: Williams is a speedy change-of-pace back, and a hamstring injury can really slow him down. He's competing to make the roster as a running back, but he could also contribute as a return man.

Cardinals | Arizona using more no-huddle offense    Mon Jun 1, 02:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) may be throwing more out of the no-huddle offense in 2015. The Cardinals worked on the no-huddle offense Monday, June 1, and head coach Bruce Arians said he believes they'll use that type of offense more this season.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are going to have an effective offense so long as quarterback Carson Palmer can stay healthy. Palmer continues to recover from the torn ACL that cut his season short last year. He has not been able to practice the no-huddle offense as Palmer has yet to take part in 11-on-11 drills.

Cardinals | David Johnson compared to elite RB    Sat May 30, 01:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson was recently compared to Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte by Arizona running backs coach Stump Mitchell. 'You can put him outside and use him as a receiver and he's a good runner,' Mitchell said. 'He's a guy who has a lot of confidence in his ability to play. He's coachable. He's a smart young man, he's physical,' Mitchell added. 'He has excellent hands and he's a bigger target to throw the ball to.'

Footballguys view: Johnson is a rookie running back to pick up in super deep re-draft leagues and he's a must-stash player in dynasty leagues. He'll work behind Andre Ellington this season, but Johnson is the bigger back and can be a bellcow if needed. He's a long-strider who doesn't shy away from contact. Johnson is a jump-cutting back with a strong work ethic. He is a fine receiver out of the backfield too. Keep him on your waiver wire speed dial in case Ellington is banged up again this season.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer sees ticking clock    Fri May 22, 09:34 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) understands that at age 35, with two knee reconstructions under his belt, time is ticking, according to Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. Palmer has been rehabbing diligently, exceeding expectations six months following surgery, and has a sense of urgency, Arians said.

Footballguys view: We're not saying Palmer's biological clock is huge, but Terrance Knighton is hanging off the minute hand. This season could be the best shot the Cardinals have with Palmer to make a deep postseason run. He's under contract through the 2018 season.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer held out of drills    Tue May 19, 06:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) was held out of 11-on-11 drills Tuesday, May 19, during organized team activities. Palmer did, however, participate in 7-on-7 drills.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals need Palmer to stay healthy if they want to make a deep postseason run in 2015. He's going to wear a brace this year in order to help stabilize his knee, and we don't think that will slow him down. Palmer called himself "rusty" after 7-on-7 drills, but he should be able to quickly shake off that rust as he continues to recover.

Cardinals | Michael Floyd praised by HC    Tue May 19, 03:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd was recognized for his conditioning by head coach Bruce Arians during organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Floyd's numbers fell last year compared to what he did in 2013. He caught 47 passes for 841 receiving yards and six touchdowns in 2014. Fantasy owners are looking for Carson Palmer to stay healthy this year, and that should help the Cardinals offense perform better as a whole.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer will wear brace    Tue May 19, 03:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) will wear a knee brace this season as he continues to recover from surgery on a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Palmer has never been a running quarterback, so we don't think the brace will impact his game much. He's been limited this offseason, but Palmer should be ready to roll once training camp gets here.

Cardinals | Ifeanyi Momah likely to make team    Mon May 18, 07:01 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Ifeanyi Momah has a good chance to make the team's final roster following the retirement of TE John Carlson. Momah is likely to make the full-time switch to tight end, after playing wide receiver in high school and college. Momah is expected to earn a spot on the Cardinals' depth chart behind tight ends Troy Niklas and Darren Fells.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Momah can make the final roster, but we're not expecting him to be much of a fantasy factor--even for fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues. Momah was an undrafted free agent out of Boston College in 2013. He signed with the Philadelphia Eagles and was released during final cuts. Last year he spent time with the Browns and the Lions.

Cardinals | Sign Gerald Christian    Mon May 18, 05:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie TE Gerald Christian signed a four-year deal Monday, May 18. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Christian was the NFL's "Mr. Irrelevant" as the final pick in the 2015 NFL draft. He's a talented move tight end who can make difficult catches seem routine. Christian is not a great blocker and is not on a team that uses the tight end that much. He'll be a longshot to make the final roster, but he has an intriguing skill set.

Cardinals | David Johnson signs with AZ    Mon May 18, 05:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie RB David Johnson signed an undisclosed deal Monday, May 18.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a big back who can grind down opponents as the game goes on. He's a determined runner with an efficient style. Johnson's not going to break any ankles in the open field, but he can run through arm tackles consistently. He'll make for a power change-of-pace back behind Andre Ellington this year.

Cardinals | David Johnson praised by HC    Sat May 16, 01:51 PM

Arizona Cardinals rookie RB David Johnson was recently lauded by head coach Bruce Arians. '[He's] very, very bright. The kid can do anything as far as a wide receiver, running back, full back,' Arians said. 'He will find a niche quick because he can learn so much.'

Footballguys view: Johnson should work well as a power complementary back behind Andre Ellington. He's a swift runner with a determined style. There's not a lot of nuance to his game, but Johnson can be counted on when tough yards are needed.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington aided by new RB?    Wed May 13, 03:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington said the selection of rookie RB David Johnson will give him more rest time and keep the offense upbeat.

Footballguys view: Early reports indicate that Ellington will still be the lead back, but the Cardinals will employ some form of RBBC this season. Johnson is a rhythm runner who can grind down an opponent as the game goes on. Ellington's current ADP is RB19 (4.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Alfonzo Dennard claimed    Thu May 7, 03:06 AM

New England Patriots CB Alfonzo Dennard was picked up off waivers by the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, May 6.

Footballguys view: Dennard has battled injuries over the course of his pro career, hampering his development. He has shown some moments, especially in press coverage, so the Cardinals could find a larger than expected role for him. Of course, he needs to stay healthy in order to start playing up to his potential.

Cardinals | Troy Niklas due for big year?    Tue May 5, 05:49 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Troy Niklas has much expected from him this season, especially following the retirement of TE John Carlson.

Footballguys view: A big year? Arizona tight ends do next to nothing under head coach Bruce Arians. Last year, Carlson had a 'big year' with 33 catches for 350 yards and one touchdown. There are plenty of other teams we're plucking fantasy tight ends from, Arizona is not one of them.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham a possibility for AZ?    Tue May 5, 04:11 PM

Former Cincinnati Bengals TE Jermaine Gresham (back) could be targeted by the Arizona Cardinals if he is medically cleared, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports.

Footballguys view: Gresham isn't cleared medically, and that's why he's currently without a team. Let's no go overboard with the connection to Arizona here. Yes, the Cardinals could have interest...and they may even bring the veteran on board. However, tight ends don't do much under head coach Bruce Arians and any Cardinals tight end isn't going to be much of a fantasy factor in 2015.

Cardinals | David Johnson to see red-zone work?    Tue May 5, 02:37 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson could be the man to beat for the No. 2 running back spot in Arizona, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com. Johnson would primarily play in red-zone and third-down situations, while RB Andre Ellington would still be the primary ball carrier.

Footballguys view: Ellington is a dangerous weapon, and the Cardinals are not going to eliminate him from being a big part of the offense just because they drafted Johnson. We like Johnson as a banger between the tackles and a player who can grind down opponents. The Cardinals will use a RBBC with Ellington as the lead back and Johnson as a power change-of-pace back. His workload near the goal line could make him a decent fantasy option in TD-only leagues.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer does drills    Tue May 5, 08:31 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) participated in on-field drills with the team Monday, May 4. He handed the ball off to the running backs and threw short, intermediate and deep throws to his receivers. While the action wasn't close to replicating game-like conditions, Palmer said joining the rest of the team on the field was a big mental boost after missing the last eight games of the 2014 season.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Cardinals here. They just aren't the same without Palmer, and they need him if they want to make a big push for the postseason again this year.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington set for similar role    Sun May 3, 08:02 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's role in 2015 will be similar to the role he had last season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Ellington's role could be a bit smaller than it was last year. The team was looking for a power back to complement Ellington, and that's why they selected David Johnson (Northern Iowa) in the third round of the 2015 NFL draft. We should see Johnson carry the load when tough yardage is needed, while Ellington should serve as the big-play back as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. We love Ellington, but he's not built to be a workhorse running back in the NFL.

Cardinals | David Johnson nabbed by Cards    Fri May 1, 10:59 PM

The Arizona Cardinals selected Northern Iowa RB David Johnson in Round 3 (No. 86 overall) of the 2015 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: We like this pick for the Cardinals. Johnson was impressive on film and at the 2015 Reese's Senior Bowl earlier this year. He's the big power back that Arizona has been looking for. Johnson has the size to be a lead back, but we like him best as a hammer in a RBBC. Andre Ellington will still get plenty of use in the Cardinals high-powered offense.

Florida OT D.J. Humphries was selected 24th overall by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals continue to build their offensive line with this pick. Humphries is very athletic and has the footwork to mirror pass-rushers on the outside.
