Cardinals | More on Larry Fitzgerald extension    Thu Feb 15, 10:13 AM

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald signed a one-year, $11 million extension during the 2017 season in case he decided to return. He can earn $1 million more in incentives.

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald knows he's near the end, but being the consummate professional he is, won't try to whine and needle his way out of Arizona, even if he could be in a situation which might bring him a Championship. He's going to be a big help to head coach Steve Wilks and whoever the new quarterback is.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald coming back    Thu Feb 15, 10:00 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald announced Thursday, Feb. 15, that he'll return for the 2018 season.

Footballguys view: This is a big boost for the Cardinals and new coach Steve Wilks. While the quarterback situation is unsettled to say the least, having a veteran like Fitzgerald will be a huge advantage to whomever ends up under center.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Steve Wilks finalized his coaching staff Wednesday, Feb. 14, by adding the following coaches: wide receivers coach Kevin Garver, assistant offensive line coach Steve Heiden, running backs assistant Terry Allen, offensive line coach Ray Brown, tight ends coach Jason Michael, defensive line coach Don Johnson, assistant defensive line coach Chris Achuff, offensive assistant Cameron Turner, assistant special teams coach Randall McCray, assistant to the head coach Ben Burress and defensive quality control coach Alonso Escalante.

Cardinals | Arizona will be aggressive in QB search    Tue Feb 13, 02:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals QBs Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton will likely be competing with another quarterback this offseason for the starting quarterback job. Team owner Michael Bidwill said the Cardinals will be aggressive in their search for a new starting quarterback following the retirement of QB Carson Palmer.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals may not be players in the free agent market. We don't see them going after potentially available guys like Kirk Cousins or Case Keenum. However, we do see the Cardinals moving up in the draft for a potential franchise quarterback. They currently have the 15th overall pick, but a move inside the top-10 for someone like Josh Allen (Wyoming) would not be a surprise.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald's salary guaranteed    Tue Feb 13, 02:35 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's $11 million salary became guaranteed on Friday, Feb. 9. However, this does not impact his retirement decision. If he chooses to retire, he would not receive that money.

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald was supposed to make up his mind about retirement once the Cardinals had their coaching staff in place. We don't think there will be any 'Favre-Watch 2018' for Fitzgerald, but he should be making a decision in the near future.

Cardinals | Steve Keim receives extension    Mon Feb 12, 02:03 PM

Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim signed a contract extension Monday, Feb. 12, that will run through the 2022 season, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Keim's contract now matches up with new head coach Steve Wilks. This will be Keim's first year as GM without Bruce Arians, and his most important task will be finding a new franchise quarterback. The Cardinals have the 15th overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft and could move up for a franchise passer.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald nearing contract deadline    Fri Feb 9, 02:08 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's $11 million base salary for 2018 will be guaranteed if he is remains on the roster Friday, Feb. 9.

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald still has not decided if he will play next season or retire. He has previously stated that he would make his decision after the new coaching staff was put in place. Former Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was named their new head coach in late January, so Fitzgerald has been mulling his decision based on the new staff for a week or so. We think he's leaning towards a return. No matter his decision, Fitzgerald is locked into a spot in the Hall of Fame when his playing days are done.

Cardinals | David Johnson cleared for activities    Thu Feb 8, 12:24 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) has been fully cleared to resume all football-related activities.

Footballguys view: This will be huge for next season, as the Cardinals are looking to move in a new direction offensively and with a new quarterback. Johnson will be a big part of that offense regardless of who is under center. Johnson could be in line for a lot of carries next season.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald to make decision soon    Sun Feb 4, 02:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald said he expects to decide on his playing future in the next week or two.

Footballguys view: A report earlier this week said new offensive coordinator Mike McCoy made it sound like Fitzgerald will play in 2018. We'll see very soon. If Fitzgerald retires, the Cardinals will have to start over at wide receiver, with John and Jaron Brown also free agents this year.

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald won't play for another team if he decides to return, according to his father Larry Fitzgerald Sr. in an interview on SiriusXM NFL Radio. 'If it's not with the Cardinals, we've seen the last of Larry Fitzgerald in the National Football League wearing No. 11,' he said. Fitzgerald Sr. added that his son 'really wants to get a championship ring, there's no doubt about that.'

Cardinals | Arizona could hire Kirby Wilson    Wed Jan 31, 07:19 PM

Former Cleveland Browns running backs coach Kirby Wilson is considered a strong candidate for the Arizona Cardinals running backs coaching position, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Wilson has been the Cardinals running back coach once before from 2004-2006. He was considered a success with the Steelers and Adrian Peterson had a great year with Wilson's coaching in 2015. Running backs weren't the problem with the Browns offense the last two years while Wilson was coaching them. He has a long track record and can only be good for David Johnson.

Cardinals | Adrian Peterson to be released    Wed Jan 31, 02:31 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Adrian Peterson is expected to be released, according to Fox Sports Radio's Mike Jurecki. Peterson's salary cap hit would be $3.5 million for 2018.

Footballguys view: Peterson had a few moments with the Cardinals last year, but despite running with a lot of intensity and urgency, Peterson doesn't appear to have enough juice to deserve a starting job in the NFL anymore. He'll have to decide if he's willing to be a bench/role player next year.

Cardinals | Jaron Brown not expected back    Wed Jan 31, 01:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent WR Jaron Brown (knee) is not expected to be re-signed. Arizona sports radio host Mike Jurecki believes Brown is due for a big payday assuming he hits the market.

Footballguys view: Brown played behind DeAndre Hopkins and Sammy Watkins at Clemson, but his size and speed have come into play in the pros with solid execution. He could push to start in a weaker wide receiver corps.

Cardinals | Arizona OC expecting Larry Fitzgerald back    Tue Jan 30, 12:38 AM

Arizona Cardinals offensive coordinator Mike McCoy is anticipating the return of WR Larry Fitzgerald next season, as during his introductory press conference with the club on Monday, Jan. 29, he 'sure sounded like a coach expecting Fitz to play.'

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald has been a PPR WR1 at the price of a WR2/WR3 for three years running now. If Carson Palmer returns, we can make it four. Even if the Cardinals have to look elsewhere for a starter, Fitzgerald should be a value if he returns.

Cardinals | Arizona hires Jeff Rodgers    Fri Jan 26, 03:13 PM

Cardinals | Arizona expected to hire Mike McCoy    Thu Jan 25, 06:57 PM

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to hire former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy as their new offensive coordinator, according to a source.

Footballguys view: McCoy presided over Jake Delhomme's good years in Carolina. He showed flexibility in Denver, crafting a quality pass offense around Kyle Orton and then adapting to Tim Tebow's game while coordinating the offense around him to some measure of success. He had the luxury of Philip Rivers as quarterback and Ken Whisenhunt and Frank Reich as offensive coordinator during his stint as head coach of the Chargers from 2013-2016. Last year was a poor season overseeing Denver's offense, and McCoy could have his biggest challenge yet if Carson Palmer and Larry Fitzgerald decide to retire. New head coach Steve Wilks has already said running the ball will be the "premise" of the offense.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones open to possible change    Thu Jan 25, 04:47 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones said he would not have a problem moving to defensive end next season if head coach Steve Wilks decides to use a 4-3 defensive alignment.

Footballguys view: Jones was one of the best defensive players in the league this year as a 3-4 OLB, but he has experience as a 4-3 end with New England. More than alignment, he'll miss defensive coordinator James Bettcher's talent for getting his best pass rushers in good matchups. Jason Pierre-Paul and Olivier Vernon will profit from that with the Giants landing Bettcher earlier this week.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald undecided on retirement     Tue Jan 23, 02:48 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald has still not decided as to whether or not he will retire this offseason, according to new head coach Steve Wilks.

Footballguys view: The future Hall of Fame receiver wanted to see who the Cardinals hired as head coach before deciding on his future in the league. Fitzgerald just completed his 14th season in the NFL and will turn 35 years old before the 2018 regular season begins. The Cardinals now have their coach, but they still are uncertain on who their quarterback will be.

Cardinals | Steve Wilks hired as head coach    Mon Jan 22, 02:17 PM

Updating previous reports, the Arizona Cardinals have officially hired Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks as their new head coach.

Footballguys view: Wilks only had one year as a coordinator, but he clearly impressed the Cardinals. The team is going in a defensive direction with their choice at head coach, but it will be most interesting to see what quarterback they add this offseason to lead the team and how Wilks works to get the best out of him.

Cardinals | James Bettcher may not return    Mon Jan 22, 02:04 PM

Cardinals | Jim Caldwell could be OC candidate    Sun Jan 21, 12:24 PM

New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores would target former Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell as his offensive coordinator if he is hired by the Arizona Cardinals as their new head coach, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Caldwell had an amazing run as an offensive coordinator in Baltimore with Joe Flacco that led to a Super Bowl win in his last stint with that title. If Carson Palmer returns for 2018, Caldwell would have a vertical passing quarterback to fit the philosophy that worked during that run, but if Palmer doesn't return, he would have an uphill battle to have success.

Link to story

Cardinals | James Bettcher has coordinator candidates    Sun Jan 21, 12:13 PM

Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator James Bettcher would look to hire former Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy as his offensive coordinator and former Indianapolis Colts head coach Chuck Pagano as his defensive coordinator if he is hired as the team's new head coach.

Footballguys view: Pagano was mentioned recently as a possible defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Arizona would have some continuity if they hired Bettcher, and both McCoy and Pagano are very experienced coaches with head coach experience. This could set the team up for one more run with Larry Fitzgerald and Carson Palmer.

Cardinals | James Bettcher remains a candidate    Sat Jan 20, 04:09 PM

Cardinals | Arizona may talk with Brian Flores again    Fri Jan 19, 06:59 PM

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to try to have a second interview with New England Patriots linebackers coach Brian Flores next week regarding their head coaching position.

Footballguys view: Flores has been in the Patriots organization since 2004, and he's been the linebackers coach since 2016. It's a long-shot as a head-coaching hire, as the Cardinals are also set to interview Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

Cardinals | Todd Haley interested in Cards OC    Fri Jan 19, 11:56 AM

Former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley is interested in the Arizona Cardinals' offensive coordinator spot.

Footballguys view: Haley was with the team in 2007-2008, working as the Cardinals OC and helping them get to the Super Bowl. The Cardinals don't have a head coach, so anyone interested in being the OC is going to have to wait.

Cardinals | Keith Armstrong meeting with Cards again    Fri Jan 19, 08:01 AM

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons special teams coach Keith Armstrong will have his second interview with the Arizona Cardinals for their head coaching vacancy Friday, Jan. 19.

Footballguys view: Armstrong has been a special teams coach in the NFL for over two decades. He's been with the Falcons since 2008 and is one of the most respected coaches in the league. He may finally get his chance to show what he can do as a head coach.

Cardinals | David Johnson's wrist is healed    Thu Jan 18, 08:26 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (wrist) has his strength and full range of motion back with his injured wrist, which is now healed. He's focused mostly on making sure he's 'ready to play' in 2018 and that he is as healthy as possible.

Footballguys view: Johnson missed most of the 2017 season with this injury, and it's good news for the Cardinals that he'll be at full strength for 2018. The Cardinals will have a new head coach and a new quarterback this upcoming season, but they should make sure that Johnson is the centerpiece of what they do offensively.

Cardinals | Arizona to talk with Keith Armstrong again    Wed Jan 17, 05:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong is scheduled to have a second interview with Arizona Cardinals for their head coaching position Friday, Jan. 19, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Armstrong has piloted Falcons special teams units that usually among the top in the league. John Harbaugh went from special teams to head coach success and it appears the Cardinals think Armstong can too. With Mike Munchak out of the running, Armstrong is a top candidate, along with New England linebackers coach Brian Flores.

Cardinals | Mike Munchak bows out of Cards race    Wed Jan 17, 10:05 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak has declined a second interview with the Arizona Cardinals for their head coach vacancy.

Footballguys view: This news is not easy to interpret, as Munchak doesn't sound like the leading candidate to replace Todd Haley as offensive coordinator, although he could have a larger role in the Steelers coaching staff in a different way. It could also speak to the unattractiveness of the Cardinals head coaching job, but then it seems odd that Munchak would even allow a first interview.
