Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu may not be ready    Mon May 23, 02:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) said he doesn't necessarily want to play if he's only at 90% health when the regular season begins. Mathieu's goal was to return by the regular season opener Sept. 11, but he doesn't want to make the mistake of coming back too early, which he said he did when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in 2013.

Footballguys view: We'll be watching this situation closely as it continues to unfold. Obviously Mathieu is a fine player but injuries have knocked his pro career off track. Mathieu did say his rehabilitation is going as planned so far, though, but he wants to come back properly.

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu near extension    Mon May 16, 08:29 AM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu is deep in negotiations for a contract extension Monday, May 16, that could make him the highest-paid safety in the league.

Footballguys view: It's a risky move to sign Mathieu to big long-term money. He's torn his ACL twice since 2013 and is somewhat injury prone dating back to his college days at LSU. If healthy, Mathieu can make plays as a slot corner or a safety. The Cardinals should be creative with the way they get this deal done.

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie likely not a target    Sun May 15, 05:02 PM

Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie (Jets) likely will not be pursued by the Arizona Cardinals, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: There could be an opportunity for a veteran CB in the Cardinals starting lineup opposite Patrick Peterson. Justin Bethel could be that guy, but he's coming off April surgery to repair a foot injury. Third-round pick Brandon Williams (Texas A&M) is a raw prospect with starter's upside, but asking him to start early in his career is a stretch.

Cardinals | Sign two players    Mon May 9, 02:58 PM

Undrafted free-agents WR Chris Hubert (Fayetteville State) and RB Elijhaa Penny (Idaho) were signed to undisclosed deals by the Arizona Cardinals Monday, May 9. Hubert and Penny both participated in Arizona's rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: These are a couple of players who could help in the return game. Hubert measures in at 5'9" 170 pounds. As a senior he caught 71 passes and scored 13 touchdowns. Penny is a large (6'2" 235 pounds) rushed for 1,159 yards last year and scored 12 touchdowns.

Cardinals | Robert Nkemdiche signs deal    Fri May 6, 03:44 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Robert Nkemdiche signed a four-year deal with the Cardinals Friday, May 6. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal includes a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Nkemdiche has the size/athleticism and occasional marriage of those traits and some football skills as a pass rusher that often gets players into the top 10, especially in a weak draft like this one. He has a "different personality" and was part of an incident with Laremy Tunsil that included a fall out of a window and marijuana, so the Cardinals could have a late-round steal if he can fit in their locker room.

Cardinals | Marqui Christian signs    Fri May 6, 11:52 AM

Cardinals | Hakeem Valles signs deal with Cards    Sun May 1, 09:54 AM

The Arizona Cardinals agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent TE Hakeem Valles (Monmouth) on an undisclosed deal Sunday, May 1.

Footballguys view: Almost any move by the Cardinals at the TE position can be ignored in the fantasy community as Arizona doesn't use them as receivers much.

Cardinals | Jake Coker heads to Arizona    Sat Apr 30, 11:50 PM

The Arizona Cardinals agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent QB Jake Coker (Alabama) Saturday, April 30. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: He played in a lot of big games during his college career at Florida State and Alabama, but Coker is likely to be only a camp arm for the Cardinals.

Cardinals | Robert Nkemdiche expected to produce    Fri Apr 29, 12:18 AM

Arizona Cardinals DT Robert Nkemdiche will 'no doubt' be an 'impact player' in the NFL, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: While some teams were worried about Nkemdiche's off-field issues but not Bruce Arians. All he did was add another potent part to a defense which is already very good. Nkemdiche may worry some people when he buys his desired pet panther, but he's going to be the one mauling folks on Sundays for the Cardinals.

Cardinals | Cards draft Robert Nkemdiche    Thu Apr 28, 11:25 PM

The Arizona Cardinals selected Ole Miss DT Robert Nkemdiche with the 29th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals improve an already awesome defense by adding Nkemdiche, who has some off-field issues but is a tremendous run stuffer. We are not shocked Bruce Arians took a shot with him, like he did with Tyrann Mathieu not long ago.

Cardinals | Patrick Peterson has timetable    Thu Apr 21, 07:23 PM

Updating previous reports, Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson (foot) said he has a six-to-eight week recovery process from his ankle surgery. As stated previously, he should be ready for training camp in late July.

Footballguys view: They'll need him in the pass-happy NFC. When not subtweeting Josh Norman about being cut, Peterson will be working hard in rehab.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald singing swan song?    Wed Apr 20, 01:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald said he has not really thought about the possibility of this being his last season playing in the NFL. Fitzgerald signed a two-year deal last offseason and said he's focused on finishing that deal this season. He hinted that if the Cardinals won the Super Bowl this season, he would lean towards retirement. 'A lot of it's tied to Carson (Palmer) - Carson's playing at a high level,' Fitzgerald said. 'I don't want to go through any other quarterback situations. It's been great to have the stability that we have now with the big fella, he's been playing lights out.'

Footballguys view: He can't have that much left in the tank, even though he would love to end his career with a ring. We love that he's coming off his best season since 2011, and if Carson Palmer is healthy again Fitzgerald could hit similar numbers which would make him a decent WR2 or WR3.

Cardinals | D.J. Humphries making progress    Tue Apr 19, 10:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals OT D.J. Humphries has looked good in the offseason, and head coach Bruce Arians feels confident in Humphries' ability. The coach said Humphries has had a 'great November, December, and all the way through to today, more than ready.'

Cardinals | Jeff Driskel works out for Cards    Tue Apr 19, 11:19 AM

Louisiana Tech QB Jeff Driskel worked out for the Arizona Cardinals recently.

Footballguys view: Driskel is an interesting late-round prospect in the 2016 NFL draft. He's athletic and has the arm to make every throw in the NFL. Driskel began his college career at Florida and was supposed to be their next Tim Tebow. Instead, his Gators career didn't live up to the hype and he ended up transferring to Louisiana Tech. He showed well at the Senior Bowl earlier this year and would be worth taking a shot on late in the draft.

Cardinals | Dak Prescott visits Arizona     Thu Apr 14, 04:53 PM

Mississippit State QB Dak Prescott is paying a visit to the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, April 14.

Footballguys view: Prescott would be an interesting fit in the Cardinals offense. He's a great scrambler, but he's made improvements as a passer during his college career at Mississippi State. Behind a bad offensive line, Prescott tried to make plays with his arm before taking off to run. He can use his eyes to manipulate the defense, and Prescott has a dash of Donovan McNabb to his game.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson not worried about role    Sat Apr 2, 08:33 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson said he believes head coach Bruce Arians will know how to make sure both he and RB David Johnson receive touches. 'Not sure how things are going to go, but I'm pretty sure we'll have a nice one-two punch,' Chris Johnson said.

Footballguys view: We think David Johnson is going to be the lead back and the most fantasy relevant of the two. We'll see how that shakes out in training camp as the duo will compete for the top spot.

Cardinals | David Johnson to carry the load?    Sat Apr 2, 08:19 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson has earned the right to be the 'bell cow' at running back, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Johnson has a size/speed combination that can make him a dangerous back. He should be a three-down back for the Cardinals in 2016, and he could finish the year as a top-10 fantasy RB.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones in long-term plans    Wed Mar 23, 12:05 PM

Arizona Cardinals DE Chandler Jones is in the team's long-term plans, and they were shocked to acquire him, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Jones is in the final year of his contract. 'When he hits free agency, we'll have the dollars to make sure he stays,' Arians said.

Footballguys view: The Patriots might have been persuaded by Jones' off-field incident that involved synthetic drugs, a lack of a shirt, and a police station. The Cardinals don't seem worried and got an elite defensive end for a 2nd round pick and a first-round bust. Jones' second contract will be huge and risky, but at least the Cardinals know they are getting a stud as long as he stays on the field.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson returns to Cards    Thu Mar 17, 03:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson re-signed a one-year deal with the Cardinals Thursday, March 17, according to a source. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Johnson was very productive with Arizona before getting hurt, so this is a good fit and we assume the deal isn't a huge one. We expect David Johnson to get the bulk of the carries after his success last season, while Andre Ellington, Johnson and maybe Stepfan Taylor split the rest of the carries.

Cardinals | Arizona still in mix for CJ2K    Wed Mar 16, 09:57 PM

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham hindered in 2015    Wed Mar 16, 04:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham believes the offseason surgery he had last year on a herniated disc slowed him down. Gresham said he didn't play up to his full potential and expects a big 2016 season.

Footballguys view: Gresham is right that the injury likely held him back. However, the Cardinals offense doesn't really feature the tight end. Fantasy owners should not be looking to Gresham for any sort of value.

Cardinals | Evan Mathis agrees    Wed Mar 16, 03:24 PM

Free-agent OG Evan Mathis (Broncos) agreed to a one-year, $6 million deal with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 16, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mathis was banged up for most of the season with the Broncos. He's big and athletic, but Mathis struggled in pass-protection in 2015. The Cardinals traded away Jonathan Cooper (Patriots), so they needed help on the interior of the offensive line.

Cardinals | Deal offered to Evan Mathis    Tue Mar 15, 07:19 PM

Cardinals | Jonathan Cooper traded to Patriots    Tue Mar 15, 02:57 PM

Arizona Cardinals OG Jonathan Cooper and a second-round pick were traded to the New England Patriots in exchange for Patriots DE Chandler Jones.

Footballguys view: Cooper failed during his time with the Cardinals largely due to injury and inconsistency. He can play inside as a guard or center for a Patriots team that is desperate for better play in the middle of the offensive line.

Cardinals | Andre Smith to visit Arizona    Mon Mar 14, 11:13 PM

Cardinals | Bruce Arians not impressed with WR prospects    Mon Mar 14, 06:59 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said this year's wide receiver prospects are the 'slowest group of receivers I've ever seen in 20 years.'

Footballguys view: At the Scouting Combine earlier this year, several people made note of the slow 40 times coming from the WR group. We've been really blessed over the last two draft classes with amazing WR talent coming into the NFL. This year is different...and an average class at best.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham contract update    Mon Mar 14, 12:30 PM

Updating a previous item, Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham signed a one-year deal to return to the Cardinals Monday, March 14. Financial terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but Gresham turned down contracts of up to four years and $23 million with $12 million fully guaranteed from other teams.

Footballguys view: This transaction would be more fantasy relevant if the Cardinals actually used their TEs.

Cardinals | Red Bryant re-signs with Cards    Mon Mar 14, 11:52 AM

Free-agent DT Red Bryant (Cardinals) re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals Monday, March 14, on an undisclosed deal.

Footballguys view: Bryant sticks around with the Cardinals to be a run-stuffer in the middle. He signed late in the season last year, and now Bryant will get a chance to compete for a rotational role.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham stays with Cardinals    Sun Mar 13, 02:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham re-signed to an undisclosed deal Sunday, March 13. He is taking less money to stay with Arizona, however.

Footballguys view: It would be more fantasy relevant if the Cardinals actually used the tight end position more. Head coach Bruce Arians doesn't really highlight the position, so Gresham is merely a TE3/depth/waiver wire player for fantasy owners.

Cardinals | Drew Stanton back with Arizona    Tue Mar 8, 06:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent QB Drew Stanton agreed to re-sign a two-year deal with the Cardinals Tuesday, March 8. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: That's the best move for Stanton. He was unlikely to find a starting job on the open market, and now he gets to stay as a backup behind Carson Palmer. He knows the Bruce Arians system well, and Stanton gives Arizona quality veteran depth.
