Cardinals | Andre Ellington's role won't be reduced    Fri Mar 27, 07:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington, who averaged 20.6 touches per game in 2014 before being injured, won't have his role reduced in 2015, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Ellington's role in the passing game may increase, too. Ellington was often limited in practices during the week last year because of his foot injury.

Footballguys view: His role will depend on who they add at the running back position in the draft. The Cardinals may even be in line to trade for Adrian Peterson (Vikings) if he's on the trade block.

Cardinals | Big season for Larry Fitzgerald?    Thu Mar 26, 10:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and QB Carson Palmer were finally on the same page last season, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners take note here. Fitzgerald could post decent fantasy numbers so long as Palmer stays upright. The Cardinals season fell apart last year after Palmer went down. They hope to avoid the same fate this season.

Cardinals | Lyle Sendlein wanted back    Thu Mar 26, 07:53 AM

Free-agent C Lyle Sendlein (Cardinals) is wanted back on the team by the Arizona Cardinals. The team would likely offer a contract with a reduced cap number.

Footballguys view: Sendlein will mostly be a backup as AQ Shipley played very well for the Colts in a handful of games last season as a center, as well as a few as a guard. Consider Sendlein as a cheap backup at best.

Cardinals | Sign Ifeanyi Momah    Wed Mar 25, 03:05 PM

Free-agent TE Ifeanyi Momah (Lions) signed a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 25. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: This is the second player the Cardinals have signed from the veteran combine. Momah will likely contribute on special teams if he makes the final roster.

Cardinals | Jonathan Cooper moving to RG    Mon Mar 23, 11:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals OG Jonathan Cooper will move to right guard following the addition of OG Mike Iupati in free agency. 'It's not a reflection on Coop. I'm as high on Coop as ever,' general manager Steve Keim said Monday, March 23.

Cardinals | Nathan Slaughter agrees    Mon Mar 23, 01:46 PM

Free-agent WR Nathan Slaughter (Jaguars) agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal with the Arizona Cardinals Monday, March 23.

Footballguys view: Slaughter spent time with both the Texans and the Jaguars last year as an undrafted rookie out of West Texas A&M. He can contribute as a slot receiver or return man for the Cardinals if he makes the final roster.

Cardinals | Arizona willing to trade for Peterson?    Fri Mar 20, 02:22 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson remains unhappy with the Vikings. The Arizona Cardinals are reportedly willing to offer a high draft pick in return for Peterson, if he becomes available.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are in a Super Bowl window, and they want to upgrade their rushing attack. Adding Peterson would swing the power balance in the NFC. We love Andre Ellington, but he's not built to be a featured back. If Arizona adds Peterson they'll be able to run the ball with authority while playing suffocating defense. So long as Carson Palmer stays healthy, Arizona could make a deep playoff run.

Cardinals | ARI meets with Melvin Gordon    Tue Mar 17, 07:02 AM

Wisconsin RB Melvin Gordon met with the Arizona Cardinals representatives on Monday, March 16.

Footballguys view: Gordon is likely to be a first-round pick in the 2015 NFL draft. The Cardinals want to find help for Andre Ellington in the backfield, and Gordon would do just that. A workhorse in college at Wisconsin, Gordon has a great blend of size and speed. He makes one cut and can explode into the second level of the defense. Gordon is not a power back, but his speed makes him a big-play threat every time he touches the ball.

Cardinals | ARI saying no to Adrian Peterson?    Tue Mar 17, 02:07 AM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson may not be going to the Arizona Cardinals. A reliable source close to the team has said the Cardinals wouldn't add Peterson with three years and $45 million left on his contract.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are looking for upgrades to the running back position, and Peterson would certainly help--but for a huge price. The Cowboys could be the team that's most interested in acquiring Peterson at this time.

Cardinals | Help coming for Andre Ellington?    Mon Mar 16, 09:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington dealt with several injuries last season, and general manager Steve Keim said that the Cardinals 'definitely need to shore up' the running back position.

Footballguys view: We love Andre Ellington, but the truth is the guy is not built to carry a full workload in the NFL. It's wise for the Cardinals to be looking for additional help at the position. Depending on the quality level of the help, Ellington's fantasy value could be heavily impacted or just slightly altered. From the backs they're looking at, it seems like Arizona wants to find a workhorse and make Ellington a change-of-pace back. That would dramatically alter his fantasy value -- stay tuned.

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has had his contract restructured, giving the Cardinals an extra $7.1 million in salary cap space.

Cardinals | Lyle Sendlein released    Thu Mar 12, 04:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals C Lyle Sendlein was released Thursday, March 12.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals continue to make changes in their offensive line and Sendlein was not much help and was ranked 40 out of 41 centers by Pro Football Focus.

Cardinals | Will host Nate Irving this week    Wed Mar 11, 01:05 AM

Free-agent LB Nate Irving (Broncos) is expected to visit the Arizona Cardinals sometime this week.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals already signed Sean Weatherspoon. Adding another linebacker coming off of injury might be necessary because the Cardinals cupboard is bare after having Daryl Washington and Karlos Dansby terrorizing opponents just a few short years ago.

Cardinals | Corey Peters agrees to terms    Tue Mar 10, 01:49 AM

The Arizona Cardinals and free-agent DT Corey Peters (Falcons) agreed to terms on a three-year deal expected to be worth more than $3.5 million per season.

Footballguys view: Peters started 55 games in five seasons for the Falcons, notching 146 tackles and 11 sacks. He was a third-round selection for Atlanta in 2010.

Cardinals | Mike Iupati expected to sign    Mon Mar 9, 06:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers impending free-agent OG Mike Iupati has told people that he plans to sign with the Arizona Cardinals, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are trying to upgrade their ground game this offseason. Adding Iupati is a big move in the right direction. He's dominant as a run-blocker, but his pass-protection skills do need work. We'll see if they can add a running back to the mix this offseason in the draft or free agency.

Cardinals | Sean Weatherspoon agrees with Arizona    Mon Mar 9, 10:39 AM

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent LB Sean Weatherspoon has agreed to a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Monday, March 9. The deal is worth just under $4 million.

Footballguys view: If healthy, Weatherspoon will be able to contribute on the Cardinals defense. He missed all of last year with an Achilles' injury after missing several games in 2013 with various injuries. Weatherspoon needs a fresh start.

Cardinals | May look at Trent Cole    Mon Mar 9, 02:50 AM

Free-agent LB Trent Cole (Eagles) has some interest from the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: Cole is a veteran pass-rusher who can work well in a 4-3 (his best fit) or a 3-4 defense. There are several teams interested in him, so we'll have to see if the Cardinals can present the best deal.

Cardinals | Interested in Brian Orakpo    Mon Mar 9, 02:48 AM

Free-agent OLB Brian Orakpo (Redskins) is drawing interest from the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: The line forms to the left. Orakpo is talented but oft-injured pass-rusher who is getting quite a bit of interest on the open market.

  Cardinals | C.J. Spiller on Arizona's radar    Sat Mar 7, 12:34 AM

The Arizona Cardinals are one of several teams with interest in free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Bills), multiple league sources said Friday, March 6.

Footballguys view: That's a bit of an odd fit. Spiller has a skill set similar to that of current Cardinals starter Andre Ellington.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer says he'll be ready    Thu Mar 5, 05:05 PM

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) said he has been running for two or three weeks and throwing five times a week. He is 'pretty close' to being able to participate in a normal workout, and he said he moved past his post-surgery 'funk' when he was able to sweat during workouts. 'I'm going to be ready to rock 'n' roll by the season,' Palmer said. 'Definitely going to be ready by that, definitely going to be ready for camp. And shooting to be getting reps in our mandatory (minicamp) and hopefully some of our OTA practices.'

Footballguys view: As we have said before, it is vital for Palmer to be ready to go for this team at the start of the season - we've seen what it looks like without him and it is unpleasant.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer reworks deal    Thu Mar 5, 03:57 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer said he agreed to restructure his contract this offseason in order to create some salary cap space for the team.

Footballguys view: They need him to do that so they can finish building around him. They had a solid defense, but the offense was a bit of a mess. Of course, some of that was because of Palmer's injury and they will lose some defensive players to free agency if they lack cap room. So this was an important move for Palmer and the Cardinals.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer may be ready for camp    Thu Mar 5, 03:56 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) said he is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament and expects to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: If you're playing 'what if' you have to wonder 'what if Arizona had a quarterback worth a nickel last season' and whether they would have given Carolina more of a run in the playoffs. That said, they desperately need him healthy for this season as it is clear they have no real backup plan there. Long term though, you have to wonder last season made them think hard about the future.

Cardinals | Arizona an option for DeMarco Murray    Mon Mar 2, 08:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray could be targeted by the Arizona Cardinals in free agency this offseason. The Cardinals learned the hard way last year that RB Andre Ellington isn't the workhorse back they were hoping he'd be.

Footballguys view: Ellington wasn't healthy at all last season, but he toughed it out. The Cardinals would jump at the chance to add a superstar like Murray. His running style would take a lot of pressure off Carson Palmer and the passing game.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald contract update    Fri Feb 27, 04:50 PM

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is scheduled to count 10.85 million against the salary cap in 2015 and $15.85 million in 2016. His contract will void after two seasons, and the Cardinals will have $4.85 million of dead money on their salary cap in 2017 and 2018.

Footballguys view: It's a good deal for the Cardinals, and Fitzgerald gets a good amount in a renegotiated deal. He's unlikely to play for Arizona in 2017 or 2018 with $16 million due each season. Fitzgerald is locked in with the Cardinals for the next two years.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett cut    Fri Feb 27, 04:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett was released Friday, Feb. 27. The Cardinals would like to re-sign Dockett if he is not able to find a better offer from another team.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals would like to bring back Dockett...but the price has to be right. There are reports and rumors swirling that the two could not agree on his market value, and that's why he was released.

Cardinals | Adrian Peterson to land in Arizona?    Fri Feb 27, 02:35 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson could be a trade option for the Arizona Cardinals with QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald nearing the end of their careers in the desert. The Cardinals are built to win now, and The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers said he wouldn't be surprised if general manager Steve Keim and head coach Bruce Arians elect to pursue Peterson.

Footballguys view: It would be an interesting fit, but it sounds like a pipe dream at this moment. If Peterson is added to Arizona's roster, it would crush the fantasy value of Andre Ellington. The Cardinals could use Ellington as a feature back again this year. If healthy, he has the ability to put up good numbers--he just needs a good complementary back behind him.

Cardinals | Bradley Sowell re-signs    Thu Feb 26, 04:05 PM

The Arizona Cardinals re-signed OT Bradley Sowell to a one-year deal Thursday, Feb. 26. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The team turned to Sowell when they needed a left tackle in 2013, and he did a fine job starting. Last year, Sowell backed up both left tackle Jared Veldheer and right tackle Bobby Massie--but both stayed healthy, so Sowell wasn't needed. The Cardinals are wise to keep him around for quality veteran depth.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer might restructure    Thu Feb 26, 12:57 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer might restructure his contract to ease his cap number of $14.5 million for 2015, according to a source. As long as the team does not increase his salary they can redo the deal he just signed during the 2014 season. According to reports, a $9.5 million roster bonus might be converted to a signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Palmer knows time is short and the team has other needs the money can go to. He wants a ring as much as Larry Fitzgerald and will do what he can to help the team get the pieces it needs to contend for a championship. The Cardinals need him as much as he needs them though--so he has some leverage--though we think he won't fight them much on it.

Cardinals | Damond Smith signs    Wed Feb 25, 04:01 PM

Free-agent CB Damond Smith (Chiefs) signed with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, Feb. 25, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith went undrafted in the 2013 Supplemental Draft, but he was able to find a home with the Chiefs. The Cardinals are getting a smaller corner (5'11") with 4.4 speed and decent instincts.

Cardinals | Ted Ginn Jr. released    Mon Feb 23, 04:51 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Ted Ginn Jr. was released Monday, Feb. 23.

Footballguys view: This move saves the Cardinals $2.5 million, but they do have to eat $1.5 million in dead money remaining on his contract. Ginn could find a home with a team that is in need of veteran WR depth and an upgrade at kick/punt returner.

Link to story

Cardinals | Bruce Arians, Steve Keim sign extensions    Mon Feb 23, 01:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and general manager Steve Keim have signed contract extensions that will run through the 2018 season.

Footballguys view: Congratulations to the David Dodds look alike! We love coach Arians, and his offense is one of the most exciting in the game....when they can find good QB play. Carson Palmer returns to the lineup this year, and he'll help the entire offense look better.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington needs to build strength    Sun Feb 22, 12:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington needs to bulk up and improve his strength this offseason so he can stay healthy for an entire season, according to general manager Steve Keim. Keim said he believes Ellington can be a featured back in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Ellington was never healthy last year, and it showed on the field. If healthy and a bit bulkier, Ellington could certainly be a feature back. He has an all-purpose skill set and can be effectively used on all three downs.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald can't be traded    Sat Feb 21, 02:06 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald had a no-trade clause included in his new four-year deal, which prevents the Cardinals from using Fitzgerald in any trade talks.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington injury update    Thu Feb 19, 04:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) remains the focal point of the offense, according to Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. Ellington split the injured tendon in his left foot, Arians said, according to ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: While everyone talks about how much Carson Palmer's injury hurt the Cardinals, Ellington's also really tore up their season. Getting him back could be as big a deal as getting Palmer back. The question is whether he comes back at 100 percent and we'll know as we get closer to preseason. Ellington could be a solid RB2 if he's ready to go.

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie to test open market    Thu Feb 19, 12:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie is expected to test the open market in March, according to head coach Bruce Arians. However, Arians made it clear that the team would like to re-sign him.

Footballguys view: Cromartie had a much better 2014 than he did a 2013, but admittedly that bar was quite low. At his age, Cro's skills are in decline but he could be a solid fit for several schemes and should find a home for a nice paycheck, though nowhere what he once commanded. One wonders if Rex Ryan will try and tempt him to Buffalo.

Cardinals | Larry Foote joins coaching staff    Thu Feb 19, 12:04 PM

Free-agent LB Larry Foote (Cardinals) has joined the Arizona Cardinals' coaching staff as he contemplates the future of his playing career. Foote will sign his contract with the team later this week, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians said Foote could return to playing before rosters are cut down.

Footballguys view: I suppose you could say he has one 'Foote' in retirement! No? Ok, on a less corny note, any time a player takes a coaching position with a team, it's easy to figure he feels like he is done. Foote played poorly in the latter half of the 2014 season, and by the end of it he his level of play tended towards terrible. We expect him to call it a career or if he doesn't to have little impact on the field at all next season.

Cardinals | Arizona close to deal with Larry Fitzgerald    Wed Feb 18, 09:17 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is close to signing a multiyear extension Wednesday, Feb. 18, with the Cardinals that will allow him to finish his career with the team.

Footballguys view: There was a brief time earlier this year when it sounded like the two sides wouldn't be able to find mutually agreeable terms. Now, it looks like a deal is close. Fitzgerald's new deal will clear up some cap space so the Cardinals can go after more talent in free agency.

Cardinals | John Abraham set to become free agent    Mon Feb 16, 06:20 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB John Abraham is set to become an unrestricted free agent this March.

Footballguys view: The 2014 season was a wash for the veteran pass-rusher. Abraham had 10.5 sacks two years ago, but last season he was concussed early and put on season-ending injured reserve. We'll see if there's a team out there willing to sign Abraham to a one-year "prove it" deal. He might have to wait until after Week 1 of the season to find a new home. After Week 1, veteran salaries are not fully guaranteed for the year.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer ahead of schedule    Mon Feb 16, 02:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation process, according to general manager Steve Keim.
