Cardinals | Arizona an option for DeMarco Murray    Mon Mar 2, 08:22 PM

Dallas Cowboys impending free-agent RB DeMarco Murray could be targeted by the Arizona Cardinals in free agency this offseason. The Cardinals learned the hard way last year that RB Andre Ellington isn't the workhorse back they were hoping he'd be.

Footballguys view: Ellington wasn't healthy at all last season, but he toughed it out. The Cardinals would jump at the chance to add a superstar like Murray. His running style would take a lot of pressure off Carson Palmer and the passing game.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald contract update    Fri Feb 27, 04:50 PM

Updating a previous report, Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is scheduled to count 10.85 million against the salary cap in 2015 and $15.85 million in 2016. His contract will void after two seasons, and the Cardinals will have $4.85 million of dead money on their salary cap in 2017 and 2018.

Footballguys view: It's a good deal for the Cardinals, and Fitzgerald gets a good amount in a renegotiated deal. He's unlikely to play for Arizona in 2017 or 2018 with $16 million due each season. Fitzgerald is locked in with the Cardinals for the next two years.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett cut    Fri Feb 27, 04:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett was released Friday, Feb. 27. The Cardinals would like to re-sign Dockett if he is not able to find a better offer from another team.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals would like to bring back Dockett...but the price has to be right. There are reports and rumors swirling that the two could not agree on his market value, and that's why he was released.

Cardinals | Adrian Peterson to land in Arizona?    Fri Feb 27, 02:35 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson could be a trade option for the Arizona Cardinals with QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald nearing the end of their careers in the desert. The Cardinals are built to win now, and The Arizona Republic's Kent Somers said he wouldn't be surprised if general manager Steve Keim and head coach Bruce Arians elect to pursue Peterson.

Footballguys view: It would be an interesting fit, but it sounds like a pipe dream at this moment. If Peterson is added to Arizona's roster, it would crush the fantasy value of Andre Ellington. The Cardinals could use Ellington as a feature back again this year. If healthy, he has the ability to put up good numbers--he just needs a good complementary back behind him.

Cardinals | Bradley Sowell re-signs    Thu Feb 26, 04:05 PM

The Arizona Cardinals re-signed OT Bradley Sowell to a one-year deal Thursday, Feb. 26. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The team turned to Sowell when they needed a left tackle in 2013, and he did a fine job starting. Last year, Sowell backed up both left tackle Jared Veldheer and right tackle Bobby Massie--but both stayed healthy, so Sowell wasn't needed. The Cardinals are wise to keep him around for quality veteran depth.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer might restructure    Thu Feb 26, 12:57 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer might restructure his contract to ease his cap number of $14.5 million for 2015, according to a source. As long as the team does not increase his salary they can redo the deal he just signed during the 2014 season. According to reports, a $9.5 million roster bonus might be converted to a signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Palmer knows time is short and the team has other needs the money can go to. He wants a ring as much as Larry Fitzgerald and will do what he can to help the team get the pieces it needs to contend for a championship. The Cardinals need him as much as he needs them though--so he has some leverage--though we think he won't fight them much on it.

Cardinals | Damond Smith signs    Wed Feb 25, 04:01 PM

Free-agent CB Damond Smith (Chiefs) signed with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, Feb. 25, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Smith went undrafted in the 2013 Supplemental Draft, but he was able to find a home with the Chiefs. The Cardinals are getting a smaller corner (5'11") with 4.4 speed and decent instincts.

Cardinals | Ted Ginn Jr. released    Mon Feb 23, 04:51 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Ted Ginn Jr. was released Monday, Feb. 23.

Footballguys view: This move saves the Cardinals $2.5 million, but they do have to eat $1.5 million in dead money remaining on his contract. Ginn could find a home with a team that is in need of veteran WR depth and an upgrade at kick/punt returner.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians, Steve Keim sign extensions    Mon Feb 23, 01:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians and general manager Steve Keim have signed contract extensions that will run through the 2018 season.

Footballguys view: Congratulations to the David Dodds look alike! We love coach Arians, and his offense is one of the most exciting in the game....when they can find good QB play. Carson Palmer returns to the lineup this year, and he'll help the entire offense look better.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington needs to build strength    Sun Feb 22, 12:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington needs to bulk up and improve his strength this offseason so he can stay healthy for an entire season, according to general manager Steve Keim. Keim said he believes Ellington can be a featured back in the NFL.

Footballguys view: Ellington was never healthy last year, and it showed on the field. If healthy and a bit bulkier, Ellington could certainly be a feature back. He has an all-purpose skill set and can be effectively used on all three downs.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald can't be traded    Sat Feb 21, 02:06 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald had a no-trade clause included in his new four-year deal, which prevents the Cardinals from using Fitzgerald in any trade talks.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington injury update    Thu Feb 19, 04:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) remains the focal point of the offense, according to Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians. Ellington split the injured tendon in his left foot, Arians said, according to ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: While everyone talks about how much Carson Palmer's injury hurt the Cardinals, Ellington's also really tore up their season. Getting him back could be as big a deal as getting Palmer back. The question is whether he comes back at 100 percent and we'll know as we get closer to preseason. Ellington could be a solid RB2 if he's ready to go.

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie to test open market    Thu Feb 19, 12:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie is expected to test the open market in March, according to head coach Bruce Arians. However, Arians made it clear that the team would like to re-sign him.

Footballguys view: Cromartie had a much better 2014 than he did a 2013, but admittedly that bar was quite low. At his age, Cro's skills are in decline but he could be a solid fit for several schemes and should find a home for a nice paycheck, though nowhere what he once commanded. One wonders if Rex Ryan will try and tempt him to Buffalo.

Cardinals | Larry Foote joins coaching staff    Thu Feb 19, 12:04 PM

Free-agent LB Larry Foote (Cardinals) has joined the Arizona Cardinals' coaching staff as he contemplates the future of his playing career. Foote will sign his contract with the team later this week, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Arians said Foote could return to playing before rosters are cut down.

Footballguys view: I suppose you could say he has one 'Foote' in retirement! No? Ok, on a less corny note, any time a player takes a coaching position with a team, it's easy to figure he feels like he is done. Foote played poorly in the latter half of the 2014 season, and by the end of it he his level of play tended towards terrible. We expect him to call it a career or if he doesn't to have little impact on the field at all next season.

Cardinals | Two-year deal for Larry Fitzgerald    Wed Feb 18, 11:44 AM

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald signs new deal    Wed Feb 18, 10:42 AM

Cardinals | Arizona close to deal with Larry Fitzgerald    Wed Feb 18, 09:17 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald is close to signing a multiyear extension Wednesday, Feb. 18, with the Cardinals that will allow him to finish his career with the team.

Footballguys view: There was a brief time earlier this year when it sounded like the two sides wouldn't be able to find mutually agreeable terms. Now, it looks like a deal is close. Fitzgerald's new deal will clear up some cap space so the Cardinals can go after more talent in free agency.

Cardinals | John Abraham set to become free agent    Mon Feb 16, 06:20 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB John Abraham is set to become an unrestricted free agent this March.

Footballguys view: The 2014 season was a wash for the veteran pass-rusher. Abraham had 10.5 sacks two years ago, but last season he was concussed early and put on season-ending injured reserve. We'll see if there's a team out there willing to sign Abraham to a one-year "prove it" deal. He might have to wait until after Week 1 of the season to find a new home. After Week 1, veteran salaries are not fully guaranteed for the year.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer ahead of schedule    Mon Feb 16, 02:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) is ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation process, according to general manager Steve Keim.

Footballguys view: A good sign for Palmer and the Cardinals here. Keim said Palmer is doing some running, looks fantastic and is more energetic than ever. Palmer tore his anterior cruciate ligament in 2014 for the second time in his career.

Cardinals | Cards could save $9 million with Fitz    Fri Feb 13, 01:01 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald would save the team $9.2 million in salary cap space if they were to outright release him, but the Cardinals have no plans to go down that road. A trade is actually more of a possibility than an outright release, and the Cardinals would gain $16 million in cap space if they traded Fitzgerald away.

Footballguys view: With that cap number of $23 million in 2015 (with $14 million in dead money), there's no team that is going to trade for Fitzgerald. We'll see the two sides agree to a restructured deal in the near future.

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie trying to be retained    Mon Feb 9, 04:04 PM

Arizona Cardinals impending free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie is wanted back in Arizona by teammate CB Patrick Peterson.

Footballguys view: Peterson said it will be tough for him to convince Cromartie to return to the Cardinals due to Cromartie's love for New York. It also doesn't help that Cromartie has an affinity for new Jets head coach Todd Bowles.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett entering final year    Fri Feb 6, 02:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals DE Darnell Dockett (knee) is scheduled to count $9.8 million against Arizona's 2015 salary cap. The team would take a hit of $3.0 million in dead money by releasing him regardless of being a June 1 designation.

Footballguys view: We don't see the Cardinals getting rid of Dockett with that cap hit. As previously reported, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he expects Dockett to return for the final year of his deal.

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he is worried about the prospect of WR Larry Fitzgerald playing elsewhere next season and 'desperately' wants him to stay with the team.

Footballguys view: The exact quote was "definitely and desperately" from Arians. We love his honesty here. We can't imagine Fitzgerald in a different uniform, and it looks like the two sides will be able to come to some sort of agreement.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald contract to be done quickly?    Sat Jan 31, 12:21 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's new deal could get done quickly following the Super Bowl, according to team president Michael Bidwill.

Footballguys view: For a time it looked like the two sides could potentially part ways in 2015. Now, that doesn't seem to be the case. Fitzgerald has already said he wants to get a new deal done and stay with the team. He is slated to earn $16.25 million in 2015.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer sentenced to probation    Thu Jan 29, 08:09 PM

According to the Associated Press, Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and been placed on probation in a case stemming from alleged assaults on his wife during arguments at their apartment last year.

Footballguys view: After Dwyer's arrest in September, the Cardinals placed him on the reserve/non-football illness list. That move kept him from playing for the Cardinals in 2014. Dwyer is set to be a free agent in 2015, and there might be a small market for him now that this legal case is behind him.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald contract should get done    Thu Jan 29, 05:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's new contract should be able to get worked out this offseason, according to team president Michael Bidwill. 'Larry and I have met about it, and I know he's interested in getting something resolved,' Bidwill said. 'I think we'll get this all worked out.'

Footballguys view: Under his current contract, Fitzgerald has a cap hit of $23.6 million in 2015, and there's still over $14 million left in dead money. The Cardinals need to shuffle that money around to give themselves more salary-cap room.

Cardinals | Dick LeBeau will not join Arizona staff    Sun Jan 25, 09:12 PM

Former Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau will not be joining the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff, a source said Sunday, Jan. 25.

Footballguys view: LeBeau isn't joining any team West of the Mississippi according to reports. This leaves the Cardinals still searching for a defensive coordinator. Head coach Bruce Arians is still expected to fill the defensive coordinator vacancy from within the organization.

Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton (knee) 'should be ready to go' for the team's offseason workouts after suffering a right knee injury that caused him to miss the final three regular season games, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Awesome, but the team still isn't going to rush him back. Both he and Carson Palmer were banged up for the playoffs, and the team wasn't the same without them. Expect the team to be cautious with both quarterbacks as they return from injury.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer could be back for OTAs    Tue Jan 20, 06:18 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) is ahead of schedule and could return for organized team activities this offseason, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (knee) said he feels great and that he is ahead of schedule in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Palmer started jogging last week and is lifting heavy weights with his legs.

Footballguys view: Great news for the Cardinals here. Palmer is confident that he will be with the team next season, and with $10 million left in dead money on his contract--we're confident as well. The Cardinals were not the same without Palmer on the field.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald talks going well    Fri Jan 16, 08:30 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's preliminary contract talks continue to go well, according to team president Michael Bidwell, and Bidwell said he believes Fitzgerald will be a member of the Cardinals next year.

Footballguys view: A positive sign for the Cardinals here. Fitzgerald has a cap hit of $23.6 million in 2015 with $14.4 million in dead money. The team needs to find a way to lower that price tag this year.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald starts contract talks    Fri Jan 9, 01:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and the team have had positive preliminary contract talks, according to sources. However, money has yet to be discussed. Fitzgerald is due an $8 million bonus if he's on the roster March 17, and his cap figure for next year is scheduled to be $23.6 million. Arizona is hoping to lower that cap number by signing Fitzgerald to a new deal worth less money. The team also hasn't ruled out the thought of trading the star receiver. Releasing Fitzgerald would save the team $9.2 million in cap space in 2015.

Footballguys view: Stay tuned here folks. Initially, reports surfaced that Fitzgerald was unhappy with his role on the offense and he wanted out of Arizona. Now, he may restructure his contract to stay with the team. However, a smaller contract may make Fitzgerald easier to trade.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald situation progressing    Tue Jan 6, 06:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald and the team have reportedly both made positive movement regarding Fitzgerald's contract.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Cardinals here. Fitzgerald is due an $8 million bonus in March, so the two sides have some time to get this done. Reportedly unhappy with his role on offense, Fitzgerald could be traded or released if a more team-friendly deal isn't worked out.

Footballguys view: In super super deep dynasty leagues, we're keeping an eye on Spadola here. He's got a nice size/speed combination, plus Spadola is explosive in and out of his breaks.

Arizona Cardinals WR Jaron Brown (shoulder) will not need surgery on his fractured scapula. The team hopes he will be able to return in time for organized team activities this offseason.

Footballguys view: Brown is an interesting player to keep an eye on in dynasty leagues. His speed and ball-tracking ability make him a nice fit for the Cardinals offense. With Larry Fitzgerald likely moving on in 2015, we could see Brown have a larger opportunity than some think.
