Cardinals | Carson Palmer to improve in 2016?    Fri Jul 22, 12:53 AM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald expects 'better things' from QB Carson Palmer this season because of Palmer's understanding of head coach Bruce Arians' offensive system.

Footballguys view: Palmer is almost always available outside of the top 6 quarterbacks. If all three of his top receivers can stay healthy this year, that and the added punch of David Johnson playing a larger role will make Palmer a profitable pick as a mid-late QB1.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald feels great    Thu Jul 21, 12:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald seems unlikely to retire anytime soon. 'Just trying to prepare for the next phase in your life, but I have a lot of good football left in me. How long I will play, I don't know. I feel great. I can still play at a high level. I just have to take it one year at a time and I got a really fantastic team I'm a part of,' Fitzgerald said.

Footballguys view: One day we're going to find that Fitzgerald has a super-soldier serum like Captain America or a mirror that prevents age like Dorian Gray. It's the only explanation for his ageless production. We expect WR2/WR3 numbers from Fitzgerald this year as long as Carson Palmer stays healthy, because we shudder at the thought of this offense without Palmer. Feel confident in selecting Fitzgerald, and make sure you find out if he really has found the Fountain of Youth as we'd love to go swimming.

Cardinals | Two new starting safeties in Arizona?    Wed Jul 20, 10:26 PM

Arizona Cardinals SS Tyvon Branch is likely to serve as a starter for the regular season opener. He is expected to replace the departed Rashad Johnson (Titans). FS Tony Jefferson is likely to start with FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) targeting the Week 1 opener, but anything but a certainty.

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu targeting Week 1    Wed Jul 20, 10:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) enters training camp on the mend for the second time in three years. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in Week 15 last year. He has surgery and is targeting a Week 1 return. He may not see any contact until then, and the team likely will be very careful with him to get the type of impact this season he had last season.

Cardinals | Red Bryant in jeopardy in Arizona?    Wed Jul 20, 10:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Red Bryant was a veteran with experience who helped plug the run last season. However, he might lose his job in the defensive line rotation for a number of reasons. The team has too much depth, as DLs Rodney Gunter progressed better than expected, Corey Peters (Achilles') is returning from injury and Xavier Williams proved he could be a suitable backup to plug the run.

Cardinals | Robert Nkemdiche impressive so far    Wed Jul 20, 10:24 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Robert Nkemdiche was impressive during organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. He has the skill set and talent of a top-five pick, but teams were scared off by an off-field incident in December 2015 while he was with the University of Mississippi. He has explosiveness, quick hands and quick feet who is likely to be the team's newest starting defensive lineman.

Cardinals | Arizona has battle at center spot    Wed Jul 20, 10:23 PM

Arizona Cardinals C A.Q. Shipley enters training camp as the incumbent and presumptive starter, but he will have competition from rookie C Evan Boehm, the team's fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones to benefit from secondary    Wed Jul 20, 10:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones give the team a top-notch pass rusher, perhaps the best since veteran John Abraham in 2013. Jones is younger than Abraham and DE Dwight Freeney, who had eight sacks last season. Jones will be helped by having one of the league's best secondaries behind him and two-time Pro Bowler DE Calais Campbell working next to him.

Cardinals | Chris Clemons could be in legal trouble    Wed Jul 20, 06:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals SS Chris D. Clemons may be facing assault charges after the Scottsdale Police Department recommended to the city's prosecutors that he be charged. Clemons allegedly punched a woman outside a Scottsdale nightclub in May.

Footballguys view: There could be a lot of trouble brewing for Clemons. The investigators will find out what exactly happened then make any decision about potential charges. After that, the league should step in with discipline.

Cardinals | Steve Keim happy with D.J. Humphries    Wed Jul 20, 03:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said he is happy with the progress OT D.J. Humphries made during the offseason workouts. Keim said Humphries has improved his strength as well as his technique and footwork. Humphries is expected to start at right tackle in 2016.

Cardinals | Calais Campbell may receive extension    Wed Jul 20, 03:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals DE Calais Campbell is a player that the Cardinals would like to sign to a contract extension. General manager Steve Keim said there is no timetable for a possible extension for Campbell.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals don't have much cap room to work with, but investing in Campbell would be a wise move. The team is likely to deal with FS Tyrann Mathieu first, then we'll see if Campbell can get a new big-money deal.

Cardinals | Some Arizona players may be on PUP list    Wed Jul 20, 03:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee), DT Frostee Rucker (ankle) and LB Zack Wagenmann (foot) appear to be candidates to start training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. General manager Steve Keim said three or four players likely will be placed on the PUP list.

Footballguys view: The PUP list to start training camp is not a big deal. Players on the list can be activated at any time.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington could play receiver    Mon Jul 18, 05:55 PM

The majority of Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's playing time may come at wide receiver, as long as RBs David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.

Footballguys view: Ellington could easily be a slot receiver for the Cardinals. He's quick enough to break ankles in the open field, and Ellington has the speed to gain separation on linebackers or safeties. He's missed 11 games in three years with the Cardinals, but Ellington has ran 571 routes during that time--a mark good for 23rd in the league at the RB position. If David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, there may not be many touches for Ellington as a rusher.

Cardinals | David Johnson will be featured    Mon Jul 18, 05:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is the unquestioned bellcow running back for the Cardinals this year, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will back up like they did for most of 2015.

Footballguys view: David Johnson shined during his rookie season with the Cardinals. His blend of size/power/speed is one that gets any fantasy football player excited. He's a first-round pick this year and has the opportunity to finish as the best RB in fantasy football. Johnson's current ADP is RB3 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Drew Stanton may be Cards future starter    Mon Jul 4, 01:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton said he has talked with the Cardinals about the possibility of being the starting quarterback once QB Carson Palmer retires. Stanton said that was a factor in him re-signing with Arizona.

Footballguys view: Stanton used to be an interesting player in dynasty formats, but after years of biding his time as a backup any thought of him being a starter seems like folly. The last time Stanton was the starter (for the Cardinals in 2014 after Carson Palmer was knocked out for the year) he only completed 55 percent of his passes and ended the season hurt as well. We like him in "All or Nothing" on Amazon Prime, but that's about as excited as we're getting on Stanton at this point in his pro career.

Cardinals | David Johnson is special    Fri Jul 1, 01:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson has averaged 131.7 yards from scrimmage per game since he entered the starting lineup in Week 13 last year, which was the most in the NFL. Johnson also had the fastest speed by a running back as a ball carrier in 2015, per Next Gen Stats.

Footballguys view: From Week 13 thru Week 17, only Devonta Freeman (Falcons) had more carries (98) than Johnson's 90. The Cardinals young star back led the NFL with a whopping 229 rushing yards after contact during that time. Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington should have roles, but David Johnson is set to be the Cardinals lead back. His current ADP is RB3 (1.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | John Brown under the radar    Tue Jun 28, 06:09 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown finished the 2015 season with 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games.

Footballguys view: We don't think he's under the radar, but instead a player that wise fantasy owners are dialed in on. The Cardinals passing attack is the most vertical in the league, and Brown is the player who takes the top off the defense regularly. We see him as a WR3 with every week starters upside as a flex play at least. Brown has a current ADP of WR35 (7.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Corey Peters may start at nose tackle    Thu Jun 23, 05:48 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Corey Peters (Achilles') is slated to start at nose tackle this season if he is healthy, in the opinion of Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. Head coach Bruce Arians, though, did say Peters would be ready by training camp. DT Rodney Gunter will compete for the spot as well.

Cardinals | Patrick Peterson doing well    Mon Jun 13, 05:00 PM

Arizona Cardinals CB Patrick Peterson (foot) said he is feeling great but is only 80% to 90% healthy right now. He reiterated that he should be full-go when training camp starts, adding that the surgery he underwent about two months ago was nothing serious, just cleanup.

Footballguys view: Peterson's on the right track and should be near 100 percent by the time training camp gets here. His presence will boost the Cardinals defense.

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu talks paused    Fri Jun 10, 08:24 AM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu's contract talks have been put on hold, but that doesn't mean a deal won't be reached before training camp, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. If a deal is reached, it's expected to be worth around $11 million per season, which would make him the highest-paid safety and put him among the highest-paid defensive backs.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals want to reward Mathieu with a new contract, but they need to be cautious with how the deal is structured due to his injury history. Talks are done right now, but they could strike up again as the regular season draws near.

Cardinals | Cards could use two RBs at a time    Tue Jun 7, 10:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is expected to get a lion's share of the work, but RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington each have skillsets which could help the offense. In fact, head coach Bruce Arians hinted Tuesday, June 7, that two backs could be on the field at the same time. 'When I first came here, that's something B.A. told me he wanted to do,' Chris Johnson said. 'It started off with me getting here late (in training camp), then Andre getting hurt early and me getting hurt. It was hard to get two of us on the field at one time, but that's something we've really been working hard on.'

Footballguys view: David Johnson is well worth taking in the first round of all fantasy drafts, but it will be interesting to see how the team mixes in Chris Johnson and Ellington behind him. Right now, Chris Johnson is going off the board at RB53 (13.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | JJ Nelson more comfortable     Mon Jun 6, 05:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR JJ Nelson said he's not thinking about the game anymore because he knows what he's doing. Nelson believes his increased comfort and an improved skill set will enable him to come into a game and not feel like there's a drop-off with fellow receivers.

Footballguys view: Nelson's got the speed to take the top off the defense in a hurry. At this time, he's buried on the Cardinals depth chart behind Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown. With Fitzgerald and Floyd in the final year of their contracts, Nelson's future with the team looks like it could have more work.

Cardinals | Could still re-sign Dwight Freeney    Sat Jun 4, 03:03 PM

Free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) could still be re-signed by the Arizona Cardinals, according to Kent Somers of The Arizona Republic.

Footballguys view: Freeney has gotten a bit of interest on the open market with teams like the Bengals or the Falcons. Returning to the Cardinals in a similar (part-time) role in 2016 would make a lot of sense. Last year, Freeney was able to snare eight sacks while only playing 245 snaps in just 11 games.

Cardinals | JJ Nelson performing well in workouts    Wed Jun 1, 01:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR JJ Nelson has made several terrific catches during organized team activities this offseason and said that playing in 2015 helped boost his confidence. Head coach Bruce Arian said he believes Nelson could make an impact on offense in 2016. 'He has a very unique skill in tracking the ball that the great ones have when the ball's coming over your opposite shoulder,' Arians said. 'When you have a little fast guy that can do that, you have a special one.'

Footballguys view: The future is bright for Nelson, but in 2016 he's buried on the depth chart behind Larry Fitzgerald, Michael Floyd and John Brown. He's a deep receiver with the speed to get by the defense in a hurry. We'll see if he can continue to shine as the offseason continues.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson could start for Arizona    Tue May 31, 07:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson could claim the starting job in Arizona's backfield despite head coach Bruce Arians claiming that RB David Johnson is the bell cow back, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: No matter who is the starter, the Cardinals are likely to use some form of RBBC. Chris Johnson proved last year that he still has some left in the tank...before getting hurt. David Johnson proved that he can be a big-time runner and receiver in the NFL. We think the latter gets the starting job with the seasoned veteran working as a change-of-pace back.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson likes RB tandem    Sat May 28, 10:04 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson said he believes he and RB David Johnson can be the best running back tandem in the NFL. David Johnson said Chris Johnson has helped him become a more patient running back.

Footballguys view: Chris Johnson still has the speed to be dangerous when given a crease, but second-year pro David Johnson is set to be the team's lead back. At this time, David Johnson has a current ADP of RB4 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues while Chris Johnson is considered RB57 (14.02).

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu may not be ready    Mon May 23, 02:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu (knee) said he doesn't necessarily want to play if he's only at 90% health when the regular season begins. Mathieu's goal was to return by the regular season opener Sept. 11, but he doesn't want to make the mistake of coming back too early, which he said he did when he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and lateral collateral ligament in 2013.

Footballguys view: We'll be watching this situation closely as it continues to unfold. Obviously Mathieu is a fine player but injuries have knocked his pro career off track. Mathieu did say his rehabilitation is going as planned so far, though, but he wants to come back properly.

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu near extension    Mon May 16, 08:29 AM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu is deep in negotiations for a contract extension Monday, May 16, that could make him the highest-paid safety in the league.

Footballguys view: It's a risky move to sign Mathieu to big long-term money. He's torn his ACL twice since 2013 and is somewhat injury prone dating back to his college days at LSU. If healthy, Mathieu can make plays as a slot corner or a safety. The Cardinals should be creative with the way they get this deal done.

Cardinals | Antonio Cromartie likely not a target    Sun May 15, 05:02 PM

Free-agent CB Antonio Cromartie (Jets) likely will not be pursued by the Arizona Cardinals, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: There could be an opportunity for a veteran CB in the Cardinals starting lineup opposite Patrick Peterson. Justin Bethel could be that guy, but he's coming off April surgery to repair a foot injury. Third-round pick Brandon Williams (Texas A&M) is a raw prospect with starter's upside, but asking him to start early in his career is a stretch.

Undrafted free-agents WR Chris Hubert (Fayetteville State) and RB Elijhaa Penny (Idaho) were signed to undisclosed deals by the Arizona Cardinals Monday, May 9. Hubert and Penny both participated in Arizona's rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: These are a couple of players who could help in the return game. Hubert measures in at 5'9" 170 pounds. As a senior he caught 71 passes and scored 13 touchdowns. Penny is a large (6'2" 235 pounds) rushed for 1,159 yards last year and scored 12 touchdowns.

Arizona Cardinals DT Robert Nkemdiche signed a four-year deal with the Cardinals Friday, May 6. Financial terms were not disclosed. The deal includes a fifth-year option.

Footballguys view: Nkemdiche has the size/athleticism and occasional marriage of those traits and some football skills as a pass rusher that often gets players into the top 10, especially in a weak draft like this one. He has a "different personality" and was part of an incident with Laremy Tunsil that included a fall out of a window and marijuana, so the Cardinals could have a late-round steal if he can fit in their locker room.

Footballguys view: While some teams were worried about Nkemdiche's off-field issues but not Bruce Arians. All he did was add another potent part to a defense which is already very good. Nkemdiche may worry some people when he buys his desired pet panther, but he's going to be the one mauling folks on Sundays for the Cardinals.
