Cardinals | Arizona talking with Chandler Jones    Fri Feb 17, 02:41 PM

The Arizona Cardinals have had contract talks with the agent for impending free-agent LB Chandler Jones but no deal is imminent at this point.

Footballguys view: General manager Steve Keim said the team will place the franchise tag on Jones if the two sides are not able to reach a long-term agreement.

Cardinals | John Brown now very healthy, says owner    Tue Feb 14, 11:04 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR John Brown (illness) is now 'very healthy,' according to team president and owner Michael Bidwill, who also said that it 'looks like they found the issue' regarding the sickle cell problem the receiver was dealing with this past season. Bidwill added: 'We'll get (Brown) back the way we had him.'

Footballguys view: Brown appeared in 15 games, but he was limited in many of those contests. Coming off a disappointing season, Brown could bounce back as the no.2 asset in the passing game for the Cardinals in 2017.

Cardinals | Chandler Jones to be tagged if no deal    Tue Feb 14, 10:44 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones will receive the franchise tag if both sides can't agree to terms on a multi-year contract, according to team president and owner Michael Bidwill, who said, 'He's a great pass rusher, but if we can't agree to terms that work for us, we're just going to franchise him, and his people know that.'

Footballguys view: The tag for a linebacker guarantees a one-year salary of $14.1 million this year. If tagged, Jones and the Cardinals would have until July 15th to work out a new long-term contract.

Cardinals | Arizona wants long-term quarterback    Mon Feb 13, 04:53 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is returning for a 14th NFL season, but general manager Steve Keim admits that he wants to find a quarterback for the Cardinals long-term future. 'You're not a GM for long if you don't find [a quarterback],' Keim said. 'I have to do a better job with my staff and the coaching staff, we have to identify the right guy and put this organization in position to have success for years to come.

Footballguys view: Keim is right, and the Cardinals need to find a quarterback of the future ASAP. Palmer doesn't have much time left, and his effectiveness as a starter has been waning in recent years. This isn't a great class for quarterbacks, but the Cardinals may select a player at the position in the 2017 NFL draft.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer will play in 2017    Thu Feb 9, 03:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has announced that he will play in 2017 after considering retirement.

Footballguys view: If they can get an offensive line in front of him, Palmer could help them make a serious run towards the playoffs. However, if the line plays like it did last season, Palmer is likely to have a repeat of his disappointing 2016.

Cardinals | No Tony Romo for Arizona    Sat Feb 4, 12:38 AM

Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo is unlikely to be pursued by the Arizona Cardinals, according to head coach Bruce Arians. 'I wish Tony all the best; I doubt he'll be a Cardinal,' Arians said.

Footballguys view: Romo would fit in Arizona, but it looks like Carson Palmer will be back. Arizona is still a viable first-round quarterback destination in the draft.

Cardinals | Daryl Washington not likely to return    Fri Feb 3, 11:53 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Daryl Washington is unlikely to return to the team in 2017, according to a team source, even if he is reinstated.

Footballguys view: Washington should be picked up in deep dynasty IDP leagues as he could have value this year, but it sounds like it won't be in the role he flourished in previously in Arizona.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians expects Carson Palmer back    Fri Feb 3, 02:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he thinks QB Carson Palmer will 'announce he's coming back real soon,' in regards to his status for the 2017 season.

Cardinals | D.J. Humphries could play left tackle    Thu Feb 2, 09:06 PM

Arizona Cardinals OT D.J. Humphries is the early favorite to play left tackle in 2017, according to offensive line coach Harold Goodwin, and OT Jared Veldheer will likely move to right tackle.

Footballguys view: Humphries career got off to a slow start after being inactive for his whole rookie season, but he came into 2016 as the starter at right tackle and eventually replaced Veldheer after he went down. Things have turned around for the 2015 first-rounder and it looks like the pick could pan out after all.

Cardinals | Arizona eyeing Deshaun Watson?    Thu Feb 2, 04:39 PM

Clemson QB Deshaun Watson has caught the eye of the Arizona Cardinals, who could try to trade up to draft the collegiate standout.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are obviously planning ahead to a post-Palmer era, even though it appears that Palmer will return for the 2017 season. Opinions on Watson vary in draft community, so he could be there for them at #13.

Cardinals | Arizona likes Tyrod Taylor    Thu Feb 2, 04:32 PM

Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor 'is very appealing to Arizona,' according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports. Furthermore, Taylor would make a great fit in head coach Bruce Arians' scheme if the Bills choose to move on from their quarterback.

Footballguys view: Taylor is a fearless downfield passer, although he is not refined in the pocket. Still, with Carson Palmer year-to-year at this point and Taylor potentially being a rare quarterback with some success as a starter available on the open market, the Cardinals have to consider adding him even if Palmer confirms his return for 2017.

Cardinals | David Johnson has big goal for 2017    Thu Feb 2, 12:13 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson said he wants to have 1,000 yards rushing and 1,000 yards receiving next season. Johnson believes he can reach that goal if he improves his route running.

Footballguys view: Johnson is a former wide receiver and has wide receiver ball skills and route-running ability. The Cardinals have a downfield passing attack and aren't afraid to split him out wide. This is certainly a possibility with the wide receiver group not looking as it did in years past.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer decision coming soon?    Wed Feb 1, 10:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is reportedly 'tied to the hip' with WR Larry Fitzgerald in terms of their playing futures. Fitzgerald announced Wednesday, Feb. 1, he will return for another season, suggesting it is a 'good sign' Palmer will do the same.

Footballguys view: Palmer's fantasy stock fell greatly in 2016 and it might not bounce back this year, assuming he returns, but it is looking highly likely that he does return for next season. The Cardinals can't afford to lose him if they want to contend for the playoffs. This is good news for the value of Fitzgerald, John Brown, David Johnson, and JJ Nelson.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald putting off retirement    Wed Feb 1, 10:13 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald announced Wednesday, Feb. 1, that he is 'definitely' returning for a 14th season and play out the final year of his contract in 2017, according to ESPN's Jim Trotter.

Footballguys view: This should help Cardinals fans breath a sigh of relief, as Carson Palmer seems likely to return if Fitzgerald is coming back. The Hall of Famer actually had his second highest catches total ever last year and his value is strong in PPR leagues with Michael Floyd no longer in Arizona and John Brown's long-term health a question due to a sickle-cell condition.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer addresses rumor    Wed Feb 1, 12:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer sent a text message to The Arizona Republic writer Kent Somers to dispel rumors, stating Palmer's Arizona home is not on the market.

Footballguys view: Palmer's report should be heartening for the team as they wait to see who their quarterback will be next season. He appears to want to keep the perception that he will be with the team in 2017.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians expects stars back in '17    Tue Jan 31, 09:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians expects both QB Carson Palmer and WR Larry Fitzgerald to return in 2017. He feels 'comfortable with where they're at' and added, 'I think when the juices start flowing and the injuries go away, they'll both be back. But there's nothing to confirm yet.'

Footballguys view: The Cardinals team structure is hanging in the balance on Palmer's decision. Drew Stanton would be the starter if Palmer doesn't return, which would likely relegate the Cardinals to being a bottom tier team. The wide receiver corps isn't nearly as strong as it looked a year ago with Michael Floyd gone and John Brown's health a big question. Even if Palmer and Fitzgerald return, the Cardinals will soon be at a crossroads.

Cardinals | Tyran Mathieu almost fully healthy    Tue Jan 31, 05:59 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu's (knee) surgically repaired knee is estimated to be 96 percent healthy, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Mathieu's previously injured shoulder is at full strength.

Footballguys view: Mathieu only played ten games last season, so hopefully he can have an uneventful offseason and not be racing to get back on the field after serious surgery as he was last year. Mathieu has reportedly added ten pounds to help his durability in the future.

Cardinals | Byron Leftwich given high praise    Tue Jan 31, 03:34 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians believes new quarterbacks coach Byron Leftwich will be a head coach in the NFL someday. Arians added that he had tried to recruit Leftwich into coaching since Leftwich retired.

Footballguys view: Leftwich was known for his toughness and competitiveness as a player, so anyone he coaches should respond to that. He was also fearless in the pocket, always willing take a hit to deliver the ball, so his style meshes well with Arians' vertical passing philosophy.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald could call it a career    Sun Jan 29, 03:50 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald reportedly told friends in September he expected 2016 to be his last season. He has yet to make a definitive decision one way or the other, but when asked about his future last offseason, the 10-time Pro Bowler told KMVP-FM 'a lot of it's tied to Carson (Palmer).'

Footballguys view: Palmer is reportedly contemplating retirement but he should be back for another run in 2017, and we believe Fitzgerald will return as well. He's set to be a Hall of Fame player at some point when his playing days are done. The Cardinals need to find an heir apparent for both Palmer and Fitzgerald ASAP.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer mum about retirement plans    Sun Jan 29, 03:40 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer has yet to confirm whether he intends to return for another season or retire. At least one prominent general manager and two coaches around the league believe Palmer has played his last down.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals don't have an heir apparent behind Palmer, but that could change quickly if he returns for another season in 2017. The draft isn't great for quarterbacks, but perhaps the Cardinals can locate a potential starter at some point in the process.

Cardinals | Carson Palmer had issues on the road    Fri Jan 27, 04:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer threw for 1,821 yards, 13 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the road this season. He threw for 2,412 yards, 13 touchdowns and only three interceptions at home.

Footballguys view: Home/road splits were not kind to Palmer. With his pro career beginning to wind down, the Cardinals need to find a young passer to develop behind him.

Cardinals | Arizona makes coaching staff changes    Fri Jan 27, 04:11 PM

Former NFL QB Byron Leftwich will join the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff as the quarterbacks coach, according to a source. Quarterbacks coach Freddie Kitchens will be replacing assistant coach Stump Mitchell as the running backs coach because Mitchell has left the team.

Footballguys view: Leftwich was a tough quarterback who had no problem going deep. That sounds about like what Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians demands of the position.

Cardinals | Tyrann Mathieu adds weight    Thu Jan 26, 12:23 PM

Arizona Cardinals FS Tyrann Mathieu has added about 10 pounds this offseason in hopes to avoid future injuries. Mathieu said he will lose the weight if it affects his lateral movement.

Cardinals | David Johnson consistent this season    Wed Jan 25, 08:13 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson rushed for 633 yards and eight touchdowns at home this season and rushed for 606 yards and eight touchdowns on the road. Johnson also caught 40 passes and two touchdowns both on the road and at home.

Footballguys view: Johnson had an insane season, proving to be a monster threat on the ground and through the air. His 1,239 yards were bolstered by almost 1,000 receiving yards (879) as he proved to be most of the Cardinals offense this year. This could be a high water mark for him, depending on what happens to the offense this offseason, but it's clear he can do everything and bring home the fantasy production you need. He's going to go high in redraft next season.

Cardinals | Coach expects Carson Palmer to return    Sun Jan 22, 12:19 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said QB Carson Palmer has not told him if he will continue his playing career but he believes Palmer will play in 2017.

Footballguys view: Palmer should return in 2017, but the veteran is clearly not the same player he used to be. The Cardinals have nobody of note behind him, and they should do their best to find Palmer's heir apparent at quarterback through the 2017 NFL Draft.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington to become free agent    Sun Jan 15, 06:03 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: The speedy back could use a change of scenery if he wants a larger role. He was the primary backup to David Johnson this year and had a career-low 96 yards rushing and a career-low 85 yards receiving. He may get a chance to compete for a starting role somewhere else in 2017. Ellington will have a lot to prove as the RB position is always cramped, will get more cramped with a great RB class coming in, and Ellington's injury history is also a concern.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham primed to hit market    Sun Jan 15, 05:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Jermaine Gresham will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Cardinals | Chris Johnson set to be FA    Sun Jan 15, 05:54 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: At 31-years old, Johnson still feels like he has something to prove. Over the last two years, Johnson has played in only 15 games. In 2016, Johnson was limited to four games as a groin injury that required surgery cut his season short. He should get a shot somewhere, but it might not be until training camp.

Cardinals | Bruce Arians won't push Larry Fitzgerald    Sat Jan 14, 11:05 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald hasn't committed to playing in 2017, and head coach Bruce Arians said he won't try to convince Fitzgerald to return because the decision to play should be his call.

Footballguys view: We don't think Fitzgerald is done...at least we hope not. The Cardinals are likely to keep most of the band together for yet another run in 2017. They could make a push for the playoffs with an aging Carson Palmer if Fitzgerald keeps playing.

Cardinals | Daryl Washington to apply for reinstatement    Mon Jan 9, 08:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals LB Daryl Washington will apply for reinstatement in March, when the new NFL calendar begins. 'I'm optimistic moving forward when it comes to being reinstated in 2017,' Washington said. Washington has been suspended since May 30, 2014, for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy multiple times. Furthermore, the linebacker pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in March of 2014. He subsequently completed a 36-week domestic violence program and submitted to drug and alcohol testing without incident, according to court documents.

Cardinals | Arizona in the QB market?    Sun Jan 8, 07:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer is under contract through 2018, but head coach Bruce Arians said in his postseason news conference that the team needs to find a successor for Palmer.

Footballguys view: Arians is right as Palmer is nearing the end of the line. They don't have a successor on the roster, so looking for that player is a must. The draft isn't a great class of QBs this year, but we expect three to go off the board in the first round. Arizona has the 13th-overall pick, and a passer like DeShone Kizer (Notre Dame) could be their selection.

Cardinals | Protection key for Carson Palmer    Sun Jan 8, 07:23 PM

Cardinals | Chris Johnson to be free agent    Sun Jan 8, 03:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Chris Johnson will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Johnson is 31 years old and has only played in 15 games over the last two years. This season was cut short by sports hernia surgery. The speedy veteran did flash when given the ball with the Cardinals, and any team in need of a part-time playmaker should have interest.

Cardinals | Jermaine Gresham to be UFA    Sun Jan 8, 03:43 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Jermaine Gresham will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: Gresham was used a lot more for the Cardinals than he was in 2015. He caught 37 passes for 391 yards but only scored two touchdowns. Gresham isn't a good blocker, but he's a big-bodied receiver who can help move the chains. No matter where he goes in 2017, we can't imagine Gresham being a fantasy factor.

Cardinals | Arizona adds Aaron Dobson    Thu Jan 5, 12:31 PM

Free-agent WB Aaron Dobson (Patriots) signed a Reserve/Future contract with the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Jan. 5. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Dobson winds up where now-Patriots (and former Cardinals) WR Michael Floyd was. He's had a problem with drops dating back to his days in college at Marshall. Dobson did not fix those problems, and he did not mesh well with QB Tom Brady. We're not counting on him to ignite his pro career, although a change of scenery will give us more data points. Dynasty owners should be monitoring Dobson.

Cardinals | David Johnson king of Arizona running backs    Wed Jan 4, 06:39 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson set single-season franchise records in scrimmage yards (2,118), rushing touchdowns (16) and total touchdowns (20) in 2016.

Footballguys view: Johnson's season ended with an injury, but his recovery should have him back in action before you know it. He's a top fantasy RB again next year and most certainly a consideration for the no.1 overall pick in any draft format.

Cardinals | Larry Fitzgerald won't alter preparation    Tue Jan 3, 11:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald indicated he won't make any changes to his offseason approach heading into the 2017 season. Now 33, Fitzgerald has yet to fully commit to playing next year.

Footballguys view: Fitzgerald has to be considering retirement again, but he's still capable of playing at a high level. We get the feeling that he will return one more time in 2017.

Arizona Cardinals LB Chandler Jones will receive the franchise tag in the event the team isn't able to reach a long-term deal with him by March, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (knee) has been diagnosed with a sprained MCL and will not require surgery. He will sit out the Pro Bowl but is only expected to need six to eight weeks of rehab.

Footballguys view: Johnson avoids a major injury scare here...and fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief. With two months of rest, Johnson should be available for OTAs later in 2017. All signs point to him being his old self with next year kicks off, and that's means he's easily an RB1 and candidate for no.1 overall pick in 2017 fantasy drafts.
