Falcons | Devonta Freeman could have contract soon    Tue Jun 20, 02:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman's possible long-term contract could be done by the first week of training camp, according to a source. Freeman is entering the final year of his current contract.

Footballguys view: All reports have been positive about the two sides getting a deal done. While Freeman may want 'elite' RB money, he's unlikely to set the market at the position. We're expecting a new long-term contract for Freeman before the start of training camp.

Atlanta Falcons DT Grady Jarrett 'totally jumped out' to the coaching staff during offseason workouts, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Falcons | Reggie Davis' speed stands out    Sat Jun 17, 12:27 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Reggie Davis' speed 'jumps out,' according to head coach Dan Quinn, and Quinn said Davis has made 'an impact' during spring practices.

Footballguys view: Davis has impressed since his tryout during the Falcons rookie minicamp. He didn't do much for the Georgia Bulldogs in college (38 career catches for 618 receiving yards and two touchdowns) but has the speed to get by defenders in a hurry. That was evident on his first college catch -- the longest offensive play in Dawgs history -- a 98 yard touchdown against North Texas in 2013. At 6'0" 170 pounds, Davis could get work as a return man as well.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman not worried about contract    Fri Jun 16, 04:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman said he is not focusing on his contract situation but is optimistic that he will receive a contract extension at some point.

Footballguys view: Falcons GM Thomas Dimitroff has previously stated optimism regarding an extension for Freeman. We should see something done with Freeman before or during training camp. Freeman is going off the board at RB6 (1.12) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Two signed by Falcons    Thu Jun 15, 11:54 AM

Free-agent DE Martin Ifedi (Falcons) and OG Marquis Lucas (Vikings) were signed by the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, June 15, on undisclosed deals. LB Christian Tago was waived.

Falcons | Andre Roberts out with injury    Wed Jun 14, 04:14 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Andre Roberts (back) did not participate in practice Wednesday, June 14, because of a back injury.

Footballguys view: Roberts is fifth on the Falcons depth chart (at best) and will only make an impact for them on special teams.

Falcons | Taylor Gabriel not practicing either    Tue Jun 13, 05:02 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Taylor Gabriel (undisclosed) did not participate in minicamp Tuesday, June 13, as he deals with an undisclosed injury.

Footballguys view: Gabriel is going to stretch the field for the Falcons once again this year. A modest increase of the numbers he produced last year (35 catches, 579 yards) is a reasonable projection. Gabriel is an exciting playmaker in a high-powered offense, but from a fantasy perspective he's mainly just depth and a WR7. His current ADP is WR70 (14.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Julio Jones not part of minicamp    Tue Jun 13, 04:56 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) is not participating in minicamp as he continues to recover from offseason foot surgery.

Footballguys view: No hurries, no worries here. Jones does expect to be ready for training camp in late July. Fantasy owners know that a healthy Jones can be a top-5 fantasy WR and a mid-first round pick in any format.

Falcons | Dontari Poe to weigh in    Mon Jun 12, 09:22 AM

Atlanta Falcons DT Dontari Poe will weigh in Tuesday, June 13, and if he weighs less than 340 pounds, he'll earn $125,000.

Footballguys view: Poe plans to play this season at 330 pounds, and he's got a big bonus waiting for him if he hits the right number on the scale. Chronic back problems slowed him down with the Chiefs as a nose tackle. He's going to play a 3-technique in the Falcons 4-3 defense, and he should come off the field in nickel situations. A lighter weight and a reduced number of snaps could make Poe more effective in 2017.

Falcons | Derrick Coleman the starter at FB    Sun Jun 11, 09:52 PM

Atlanta Falcons FB Derrick Coleman is expected to be the starting fullback this season. 'We did a lot with our fullback a year ago,' offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said. 'We'll continue to do that with Derrick.'

Falcons | Deante Burton impressive    Sat Jun 10, 02:57 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Deante Burton performed well during the rookie minicamp and offseason workouts.

Footballguys view: Undrafted out of Kansas State in 2017, Burton can make deep passes seem routine at 6'2" 205 pounds. He adjusts well to passes thrown behind him and can be a reliable chain-mover. Keep an eye on him in super deep dynasty leagues.

Falcons | Ben Garland may have small edge for RG job    Sat Jun 10, 02:56 PM

Atlanta Falcons OG Ben Garland appeared to receive slightly more snaps with the first-team offense at right guard than OG Wes Schweitzer did during the offseason workouts open to the media.

Falcons | Justin Hardy to see opportunities     Fri Jun 9, 11:52 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Justin Hardy will be 'one of those guys to get big time opportunities,' according to wide receivers coach Raheem Morris.

Footballguys view: Hardy's role is pretty much set for 2017. He's caught 21 passes in each of the last two years, and that's a good number to project him at for this year. Hardy is fourth on the depth chart behind Julio Jones, Mohamed Sanu and Taylor Gabriel.

Falcons | Julio Jones may be used more in red zone     Thu Jun 8, 01:37 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones could be utilized more in the red zone this season with new offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian calling the shots. 'When you have a playmaker like Julio, it's making sure we maximize his opportunities because there is so much double-coverage, there are so many unique coverages that roll his way that when we don't get that, let's make sure he's one of the primary receivers on that play because it is such a tough matchup for anybody one on one.'

Footballguys view: Even though he is coming off bunion surgery, Jones is going to be one of the first receivers (and players) off the board in fantasy drafts. If there is a flaw in his game, it's that he's only reached double digits touchdowns once in his career. Getting more touchdowns would be huge for his value, and while we have to see it to believe it, we're excited for the prospect.

Falcons | Julio Jones feels fine after jogging    Tue Jun 6, 03:33 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) said he felt fine after jogging Tuesday, June 6. Jones is recovering from offseason foot surgery but is expected to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Jones should be one of the top fantasy receivers again this year, and we're not worried about his foot right now even though he had had surgery to repair a bunion on his foot that had been an issue. We see no reason why he won't be a menace in fantasy leagues and on an NFL field again this season.

Falcons | Dwight Freeney could return to Falcons    Fri Jun 2, 09:17 AM

Free-agent OLB Dwight Freeney (Falcons) said he remains in communication with the Atlanta Falcons, and he's optimistic about re-signing with them.

Footballguys view: Freeney had 3.0 sacks for the Falcons last year and would be able to step in as a part time pass-rusher again this year. The veteran could also mentor first-round pick DE Takkarist McKinley.

Falcons | Desmond Trufant ahead of schedule    Fri Jun 2, 01:47 AM

Atlanta Falcons CB Desmond Trufant (pectoral) could be back on the practice field before the start of training camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Footballguys view: All reports have been positive about Trufant during his recovery. The veteran corner should be near full strength at the start of training camp.

Falcons | Alex Gray signs with Atlanta    Thu May 25, 08:22 AM

Free-agent TE Alex Gray, a former English professional rugby player, signed with the Atlanta Falcons on an undisclosed deal Thursday, May 25.

Footballguys view: The NFL is trying to expand international appeal, so four teams will carry an additional overseas player on their practice squads during the 2017 season as part of a new International Player Pathway program. Gray is fast, can change direction without losing much speed and of course he's tough after grinding through the game we call rugby. In super super deep dynasty leagues, he's an interesting player to follow.

Falcons | GM confident about Devonta Freeman deal    Sat May 20, 02:35 PM

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said he is confident that the team will be able to sign RB Devonta Freeman to a contract extension. Dimitroff said talks between the two sides likely will occur around the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Dimitroff is confident, and we are too. Earlier reports indicate Freeman wants "elite" money for a running back. That likely puts him around $7-9 million annually. It's a hefty price to be sure, but Freeman is coming off back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons and worth it. We should see something get done around the time of training camp.

Falcons | Atlanta meeting with Sean Lissemore    Wed May 17, 02:12 PM

Free-agent DT Sean Lissemore (Chargers) is meeting with the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, May 17.

Footballguys view: This is Lissemore's first known visit since the Chargers released him earlier this year. Going on 30, Lissemore has only played in eight games over the last two years and missed all of the 2016 season due to injury. The Falcons needed defensive line help this year and that's why they signed DT Dontari Poe and DE Jack Crawford in free agency, then they spent their first-round pick on Takkarist McKinley.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman wants 'elite' money    Wed May 17, 01:11 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman wants to be 'elite paid', according to ESPN's Josina Anderson.

Footballguys view: Elite money is hard to define at the running back position in today's NFL. We'd consider elite money to be anywhere from $7-9 million annually which would put Freeman in the range of LeSean McCoy (Bills) but behind the $12 million Le'Veon Bell (Steelers) is scheduled to make in 2017. We'll see if Freeman and the Falcons can agree on a new deal sometime this summer.

Falcons | Holdout unlikely for Devonta Freeman    Tue May 16, 01:25 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman said he can't envision himself holding out if contract negotiations were to come to a halt. Freeman has one year left on his rookie deal.

Footballguys view: Freeman is scheduled to make $1.797 million this season, but GM Thomas Dimitroff has stated he believes a new deal will be worked out sometime around training camp. Freeman isn't holding out, and fantasy owners are drafting Freeman at RB6 (1.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Deion Jones added weight    Tue May 16, 12:19 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Deion Jones was encouraged to add weight in the offseason, and he weighs 230 pounds. He wants to play at that weight or at 235 pounds.

Footballguys view: Jones was listed around 220-ish last year as a rookie with the Falcons. He's their best cover linebacker, and Jones should be able to retain his lateral agility with 10 extra pounds (or so) of muscle.

Falcons | Matt Simms back with Falcons    Mon May 15, 04:46 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Simms was re-signed Monday, May 15. WR Garrett Scantling was waived in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Simms will compete as a camp arm with the Falcons once again. They've got Matt Ryan as the starter, Matt Schaub as the veteran backup and rookie Alek Togerson (Penn) as a developmental prospect.

Falcons | Eric Saubert making strong impression     Sun May 14, 11:21 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Eric Saubert is bigger and faster than anticipated, according to head coach Dan Quinn, and Quinn said the arrow is 'definitely up' on Saubert after rookie minicamp.

Footballguys view: Saubert was one of our favorite sleeper TEs in the 2017 NFL draft. Coming out of Drake, Saubert showed off incredible ball skills and athleticism during the week of practice for the East-West Shrine Game earlier this year. Austin Hooper should be the Falcons lead TE this year, but keep your eye on Saubert in dynasty formats.

Falcons | Brian Hill showing versatility    Sun May 14, 11:12 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Brian Hill impressed head coach Dan Quinn with his size and his ability to catch the ball coming out of the backfield. 'No. 1 is just the size,' Quinn said. 'You can feel that right away. He's got the ability to make one cut and get vertical. We were happy with him coming out of the backfield.'

Footballguys view: Hill was one of the most versatile backs in this draft class. He's not going to blow you away with outstanding speed or tremendous power, but Hill is a grinder who does everything well. The Wyoming product should work well as a reserve RB behind Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. If one of those guys were banged up, Hill could step into a potentially fantasy relevant role and shine.

Atlanta Falcons DE Takkarist McKinley (shoulder) likely will not participate in offseason workouts since he is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery but should be ready for training camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Footballguys view: The Falcons were thrilled to land McKinley in the first round, and he was thrilled to be picked. McKinley has always reminded the scouting community of Tamba Hali (Chiefs) because of his length and burst when getting after the quarterback.

Falcons | Alex Mack healthy again    Tue May 2, 04:22 PM

Atlanta Falcons C Alex Mack (fibula) has recovered from the broken fibula he suffered in a playoff win over the Green Bay Packers earlier this year.

Footballguys view: Mack played hurt through the postseason and didn't miss a snap in the Super Bowl. Now healthy, Mack will lead the way in the middle on a quality offensive line.

Falcons | Five UDFAs signed by Atlanta    Mon May 1, 07:28 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have signed undrafted free-agent WR Deante Burton (Kansas State), WR Reginald Davis III (Texas Tech), FB Tyler Renew (Citadel), WR Josh Magee (South Alabama) and QB Alek Torgersen (Penn). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Torgersen is an interesting super deep dynasty prospect. The Penn quarterback is known for his intelligence and accuracy. Torgersen is also athletic enough to run some zone/read concepts.

Falcons | Takkarist McKinley won't be fined    Mon May 1, 09:18 AM

Atlanta Falcons LB Takkarist McKinley won't be fined for improper language when he was selected in the NFL draft, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The NFL would have a PR nightmare if they fined McKinley after his emotional speech on the stage at the 2017 NFL draft. McKinley was clutching a picture of his deceased grandmother and proclaiming how much she helped him get to this point. It was one of the most memorable moments from any draft...even if it did have a couple of "F" bombs.

The Atlanta Falcons selected LB Duke Riley with the 75th pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Friday, April 28.

Falcons | Takkarist McKinley selected by Atlanta    Thu Apr 27, 11:09 PM

The Atlanta Falcons selected UCLA DE Takkarist McKinley with the No. 26 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft Thursday, April 27.

Footballguys view: McKinley is a solid edge rusher who could be really impressive when he gets a little more refined. He has good athleticism, and a solid motor but isn't a finished product.

Falcons | Atlanta eyeing a move up in the draft    Fri Apr 21, 02:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff believes there will be opportunities to move up from the 31st overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's D. Orlando Ledbetter, Atlanta has heavily scouted pass rushers. Missouri DE Charles Harris or Tennessee DE Derek Barnett are among those pass rushers who could be available in the 20s.

Footballguys view: The Falcons have no issues moving up in the first round as they proved with WR Julio Jones years ago. With the 31st pick, there's a chance Harris would be there but Barnett should be long gone. There will be movement in the 20s, and expect the Falcons to be a player in that mix.

Falcons | Charles Harris worked out for Falcons    Fri Apr 21, 11:06 AM

Missouri DE Charles Harris worked out for the Atlanta Falcons two weeks ago.

Footballguys view: Harris is getting a lot of buzz right before the draft...and for good reason. He was a basketball star in high school, and he takes that type of fluid athleticism to the football field as a pass rusher. He can make plays on the other side of the line of scrimmage, and Harris has good burst when the ball carrier is within range. He could be an option for the Falcons with the 31st overall pick in the first round.
