Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman will receive a shot at being the primary kickoff returner, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Falcons | Devin Hester released    Tue Jul 26, 10:22 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Devin Hester was released Tuesday, July 26.

Footballguys view: Hester has been recovering from surgery early this year to repair his toe. If healthy, there might be a team willing to take a chance on the return man. He might have to wait until injuries hit in training camp before another team shows interest.

Falcons | Several Falcons competing for return job    Sun Jul 24, 10:51 AM

Atlanta Falcons WRs Devin Fuller, Aldrick Robinson and Eric Weems and RBs Tevin Coleman and Terron Ward are all under consideration to serve as the team's primary returner on kickoffs and punts if WR Devin Hester (toe) is unable to return to form in 2016.

Falcons | Akeem King working to make transition    Wed Jul 20, 01:57 AM

Atlanta Falcons CB Akeem King continues to make the transition from wide receiver in college to cornerback in the pros. King is considered raw, but expected to have an opportunity to win a starting job during training camp and the preseason.

Falcons | Austin Hooper is solid blocker    Wed Jul 20, 01:55 AM

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper drew comparison to fellow Stanford alum and current New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener when coming out of college. However, he is viewed as a much better blocker, and the rookie should help spring RB Devonta Freeman in the run game.

Footballguys view: Hooper could be the TE this offense needs. He's able to make difficult catches over the middle, but Hooper often has to make those type of catches because he doesn't sell his routes well enough. With a little more savvy, Hooper could be quite the weapon for the Kyle Shanahan (TE-friendly) offense.

Falcons | James Stone waived    Tue Jul 19, 04:35 PM

Atlanta Falcons C James Stone (undisclosed) was waived with an injury settlement Tuesday, July 19.

Falcons | Mohamed Sanu bonding with QB    Thu Jul 14, 12:14 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu has bonded with QB Matt Ryan, working together at Ryan's passing camp in Orlando, and throughout June minicamp. The duo built chemistry as the practices wore on. 'He's got great hands,' Ryan said. 'One of the things I noticed right from the start is how strong his hands are. He's a really good worker. I think he can really help us.'

Footballguys view: The Falcons continue their quest for somebody - anybody - who can make some noise across from Julio Jones. Sanu was inconsistent in Cincinnati so we're going to need to see something more from him before we get excited. Right now we see him as just a WR5 for fantasy purposes.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman will be more involved    Mon Jul 11, 04:01 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman is expected to receive more touches on offense this season, according to running backs coach Bobby Turner.

Footballguys view: Coleman began last year as the starter for the Falcons, but his rookie season got off track due to injuries (a hamstring injury; broken ribs; a concussion). That allowed Devonta Freeman to take over as the starter and shine for the Falcons. This year, both RBs should be used as a dangerous RBBC. Coleman is a speedy back with the ability to score from anywhere on the field. We see him as a RB4/flex option for fantasy owners.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman may receive less touches    Mon Jul 11, 03:33 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman likely will receive less carries in 2016 because running backs coach Bobby Turner believes less work will keep Freeman fresher during the season.

Footballguys view: Tevin Coleman is too talented to leave on the bench if healthy, and the second-year pro will cut into Freeman's touches. Freeman had four, 100-yard rushing games over the first half of the 2015 season. However, in the second half of the season he did not have a single game with 100 yards rushing. In 2016, the Falcons should use Coleman to keep Freeman fresher for the stretch run. We like Freeman as a top-10 fantasy RB this year even though he'll be splitting touches. His current ADP is RB8 (2.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Mohamed Sanu impressing Matt Ryan    Sat Jul 9, 11:54 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Mohamed Sanu has been developing chemistry with QB Matt Ryan during spring practices, and Ryan said he has been impressed with how strong Sanu's hands are.

Footballguys view: Perhaps a fresh start in Atlanta will help the former Bengals receiver do better with a larger role. Back in 2014, Sanu ran 508 routes as a No.2 WR for the Bengals opposite superstar A.J. Green. In those 508 routes, Sanu was thrown to 19.1 percent of the time but had a bad rate of 7.1 percent drops-per-target. He finished 2014 as the 30th fantasy WR in standard-scoring leagues. Boom-or-best potential is there for Sanu in the Kyle Shanahan offense. Right now, his ADP is WR51 (11.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

NFL | WR Roddy White plans to play in 2016    Sat Jul 9, 07:25 PM

Former Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White says he plans to play in 2016 according to Jarvis Davis from CBS Atlanta. "I wanna play for a winner, so, you know, if it comes down to it and I have to wait... to get on a team that's winning, then I'll do that." White said in the interview.

Footballguys view: The ole 'veteran wants to play for a winner' take coming from White, but after a disappointing season with the Falcons in 2015 we can't imagine teams lined up around the block to sign him. Perhaps he could latch on with someone in training camp. White insists Falcons OC Kyle Shanahan's offense was the problem--and not his declining skill set. We're pretty sure he's not the same player he used to be and White is unlikely to have any fantasy value no matter where he signs.

Falcons | Atlanta could sign Connor Shaw    Thu Jun 30, 07:49 PM

Free-agent QB Connor Shaw (Browns) could be a consideration for the Atlanta Falcons, according to ESPNCleveland.com's Tony Grossi.

Footballguys view: They COULD sign him. We COULD buy Lego and make a giant Footballguys Fortress. Lots of things could happen, but we're not sure how likely any of his is. Shaw has some intriguing upside but he won't see any time behind Matt Ryan anyway so the impact isn't all that massive anyway. And now we want a Lego Football Fortress.

Falcons | Atlanta won't go for two all the time    Mon Jun 27, 01:25 PM

Atlanta Falcons head coach Dan Quinn understands that attempting two-point conversions is becoming a bigger part of the game but indicated that the Falcons probably will not attempt two-point conversions often. Quinn said sometimes it is a gut decision on whether or not to go for two points.

Falcons | Austin Hooper making good impression    Sat Jun 25, 10:22 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper has impressed offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan with his route-running ability and ball skills. 'He really comes off the ball hard,' Shanahan said. 'He's not the fastest guy in the world, but he's fast enough. He's got good cutting ability, so he can break guys off at the top of his routes.'

Footballguys view: Jacob Tamme isn't a high bar to overcome, so Hooper could be the rare fantasy-relevant rookie tight end by year's end in a Falcons pass offense that lacks a proven #2 target.

Falcons | Matt Ryan working on feet     Wed Jun 22, 06:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan has been working on increasing his comfort level with the offense this offseason. Ryan has worked in front of a mirror to try to get his feet in the right position to be able to throw the ball the way he wants to and to improve the timing of the play. He is able to watch his feet closely this way and can make sure everything is aligned correctly before dropping back.

Footballguys view: Ryan had one of the worst years of his career in 2015, and he is going to have to rely on Julio Jones and Devonta Freeman again to power the passing game unless Mohamed Sanu is a lot better than advertised. Ryan is no longer among the QB1 or even upper QB2 ranks and he is not worth drafting in the top 15-18 quarterbacks this year.

Falcons | Deion Jones bulking up for role    Thu Jun 16, 01:28 AM

Atlanta Falcons LB Deion Jones has put on weight, checking in at 230 pounds for the team's minicamp. He is in line to serve as the team's starting middle linebacker, and is bulking up in preparation for his first NFL campaign.

Falcons | More deep balls for Julio Jones?    Wed Jun 15, 10:08 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is expected to see a lot more work down the field this season, as offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan anticipates taking more deep shots. The team added WR Mohamed Sanu, TE Austin Hooper and WR Justin Hardy continues to develop, and Shanahan is hopeful their addition will help keep added defensive attention off of Jones.

Footballguys view: We like the sound of that! Jones is without a doubt one of the premiere receivers in the NFL and is just as good in fantasy, where we have him as an easy WR1.

Falcons | Chris Chester returned to practice    Wed Jun 15, 02:45 PM

Atlanta Falcons OG Chris Chester (shoulder), who had offseason shoulder surgery, returned to practice Tuesday, June 14. Chester lined up at right guard with the third-team offense.

Falcons | Justin Hardy set for big role?    Mon Jun 13, 05:50 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Justin Hardy is expected to be a major contributor in the passing game this season.

Footballguys view: Hardy is going to be the team's WR3 behind Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu. We can't see his role being that fantasy relevant on a team that is going to force-feed the ball to Jones and run as much as possible with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman.

Falcons | Austin Hooper to participate in minicamp    Sun Jun 12, 10:54 AM

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper will take part in the club's mandatory minicamp beginning Tuesday, June 14. He was unable to participate in three weeks of organized team activities because Stanford's academic calendar had not been completed.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick out of Stanford, Hooper reminds some in the scouting community of Coby Fleener (Saints). Like Fleener, Hooper has the build-up speed to challenge a defense vertically down the seam. The rookie could see significant playing time early on for the Falcons, and his natural pass-catching ability could be featured in the red zone.

Falcons | Fewer touchdowns recently for Julio Jones    Sun Jun 12, 08:43 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones scored 18 touchdowns on 133 catches through the first two seasons of his career, and over the past three years, he has caught just 16 touchdowns on 281 receptions.

Footballguys view: Touchdowns can come and go, but Jones was the No.2 fantasy WR last year with 136 catches, 1,871 yards and eight TDs. This season, we could see Jones put up a similar stat line...and perhaps he'll hit double-digit TDs in 2016. Either way, he's a damn good fantasy asset to add once again. His current ADP is WR2 (1.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman limited Tuesday    Tue Jun 7, 03:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (gluteus) was limited during practice Tuesday, June 7, because of a high gluteal strain, but head coach Dan Quinn said the injury is not serious.

Footballguys view: Freeman is in an interesting situation this year. Second-year pro Tevin Coleman was the team's starter last year as a rookie, but an injury caused him to miss time and it opened the door for Freeman. He paid off in a big way for fantasy owners with 1,600 yards combined and 14 total touchdowns. This year, Freeman should be the team's lead back although there may be a larger role for Coleman than some think. Freeman's current ADP is RB5 (2.02) while Coleman's is RB41 (9.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | ATL passing on Dwight Freeney    Wed Jun 1, 08:08 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have decided not to sign free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) at this point, although they could revisit the idea of adding him down the road, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Footballguys view: The Falcons could always use a part-time veteran pass-rusher like Freeney. We'll see if Freeney can land with a team some time before training camp.

Falcons | Devin Hester not at full health    Tue May 31, 04:09 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Devin Hester (toe) said he's at about 75% health coming off his offseason toe surgery.

Footballguys view: Toe injuries can linger if not given enough time to heal. Hester is trying to stick around on the Falcons roster mainly as a return man. They've added talent to the WR position this offseason, so Hester isn't in line to do much as a receiver.

Falcons | Not signing Brandon Boykin    Wed May 25, 03:05 PM

The Atlanta Falcons are not signing free-agent CB Brandon Boykin (Panthers) after he visited with the team, according to a league source.

Footballguys view: Boykin has bounced around the league over the last year. He's talented enough to be a decent slot corner, but there must be attitude/locker-room/off-field issues that prevent him from sticking in any one spot.

Falcons | Dwight Freeney to visit Atlanta    Wed May 25, 02:31 PM

Free-agent LB Dwight Freeney (Cardinals) will likely visit the Atlanta Falcons next week.

Footballguys view: Freeney is visiting with the Bengals this week, and there's a chance he finds a new home with Cincinnati. If not, the Falcons could certainly use a veteran like Freeney as a part-time pass-rusher.

Falcons | Sign Laurence Gibson    Thu May 19, 06:18 PM

Free-agent OT Laurence Gibson (Chiefs) was signed by the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, May 19.

  Falcons | Vic Beasley's shoulder a non-issue    Thu May 19, 01:05 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Vic Beasley's (shoulder) torn labrum in his shoulder is a non-issue this offseason. He was able to take part in practice and received snaps in the regular season last year while playing through it. Beasley said his shoulder is now at full health, and he's also added some upper-body weight in the last few months with the help of a nutritionist.

Footballguys view: The Falcons could use Beasley at 100% this year, to build on his 20 tackle, four sack rookie season.

Falcons | Brandon Boykin to visit    Wed May 18, 09:15 PM

Free-agent CB Brandon Boykin (Panthers) is scheduled to meet with the Atlanta Falcons Monday, May 23.

Footballguys view: The CB-desperate Panthers decided to get rid of Boykin after signing him earlier this year. He can play at slot corner, but Boykin is running out of chances after stops with the Eagles, Steelers and Panthers.

Falcons | Leon Hall not an option    Sat May 14, 12:55 PM

Free-agent CB Leon Hall (Bengals) will not be signing with the Atlanta Falcons, according to a source. The Falcons did meet with Hall earlier this offseason.

Footballguys view: Hall is recovering from offseason back surgery, and that may be why the Falcons are saying "no thanks" at this time. The Giants have met with Hall, and they might be the team with the most interest.

Falcons | Devin Hester has green light on kicks    Thu May 12, 09:30 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Devin Hester (toe) could be fully recovered from toe surgery prior to training camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn, and Quinn said he is inclined to allow Hester to try to return kicks out of the end zone. 'There are special players like Dev and other returners around the league, they'll still get green-lighted,' Quinn said. 'Here's a guy who is on the club for this unique reason.'

Falcons | Sean Weatherspoon feeling healthy    Wed May 11, 03:23 PM

Atlanta Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon (Achilles') said he is in great health and that his movement is light years ahead of where he was last year coming of his ruptured Achilles' tendon.

Footballguys view: Weatherspoon barely saw the field last year for the Cardinals. Now he's back with the Falcons and will compete for a starting job.

Falcons | Keanu Neal expected to start    Tue May 10, 01:09 AM

Atlanta Falcons SS Keanu Neal is expected to make the biggest impact among the team's rookies, and he should serve as the starting strong safety. He might work as the Kam Chancellor-type player in head coach Dan Quinn's defense.

Footballguys view: Neal loves to hit and he can be an intimidating force on the field on every play. He's got good click-and-close ability in coverage, and he can stay with tight ends across the field.

Falcons | Two receivers cut    Mon May 9, 06:29 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Malachi Jones and WR David Richards were released Monday, May 9.

Falcons | Three UDFAs added    Sun May 8, 02:54 AM

The Atlanta Falcons signed Temple OL Shahbaz Ahmed, Oklahoma State WR David Glidden and Southern Illinois DE Brandon Williams as undrafted free agents on Saturday, May 7.

Footballguys view: Glidden was seen as an unsung hero for the OSU Cowboys as a senior. He had a team-high 57 receptions for 866 yards and three touchdowns. Glidden led the Cowboys with 40 receptions for first downs and 382 yards after catch.

Falcons | Leon Hall still an option    Fri May 6, 03:56 PM

Falcons | Austin Hooper to help in red zone    Thu May 5, 09:06 AM

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper will help the Falcons in the red zone, where they ranked 17th in the league with a 54.7% conversion rate last season. Stanford tight ends coach Morgan Turner was most impressed with the red zone production Hooper had in a 41-31 win over USC. 'If you go back and watch the game, he goes up and on a corner route, high-points the ball over two DBs,' Turner said. 'He makes another catch when it's Cover 0; a contested catch. Both were in the red zone that got us down to the 1- and 2-yard lines. He's definitely a threat because he will make contested catches.'

The Atlanta Falcons selected Stanford TE Austin Hooper with the No. 81 overall pick in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft on Friday, April 29.

Footballguys view: A solid route-runner, who is a bit of a move-tight end only, but could develop into a blocker as well. We'll see if they Falcons try to integrate him into the offense like they used to with Tony Gonzalez, though Hooper isn't in the same class.

Falcons | Keanu Neal fills important role    Thu Apr 28, 10:38 PM

Atlanta Falcons FS Keanu Neal's ability to close and cover tight ends are some of the reasons head coach Dan Quinn believes he can handle the unqiue role a strong safety plays in his defensive system.

Footballguys view: He's got a lot to offer this defense, and the fact that he can both hit hard to set the tone on defense as well as cover is a big help in this division.

The Atlanta Falcons selected Florida FS Keanu Neal with the 17th overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft on Thursday, April 28.

Footballguys view: The Jets were trying to move up, but Atlanta got their guy. Expected to be a second round pick, Neal is a big hitter who will bring some physicality to the defense.

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff has been calling teams to try to move up in the 2016 NFL draft. The Falcons currently own the 17th pick in the first round.

Clemson Des Shaq Lawson and Kevin Dodd could be options for the Atlanta Falcons with their No. 17 overall pick. The consensus of pundits has the Falcons taking Ohio State LB Darron Lee with that pick, however.

Footballguys view: The Falcons will look defense in almost any scenario. Lee would add a lot of speed to their linebacking corps, while Lawson and Dodd would be instant additions of pass rush punch and stout run defense from the edge.
