Falcons | Atlanta boasted best running back duo    Thu Feb 23, 05:48 PM

Atlanta Falcons RBs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman produced the best numbers of any backfield combination in 2016. Their main production came in the endzone, tallying a combined 24 total touchdowns. Freeman finished with over 1,500 total yards, while Coleman finished just shy of 1,000 total yards.

Footballguys view: The Falcons should have more of the same going forward in 2017. Kyle Shanahan left to be the head coach of the 49ers, but new OC Steve Sarkisian is likely to keep most of the system in place.

Falcons | Jonathan Babineaux may not be back    Mon Feb 20, 06:58 PM

Atlanta Falcons impending free-agent DT Jonathan Babineaux may not return to the Falcons next season even if he decides not to retire this offseason.

Footballguys view: Babineaux has been one of the best and most consistent defensive linemen in team history. Losing him would leave the team with Grady Jarrett and Tyson Jackson inside at defensive tackle. It's a deep class on the defensive line in the draft this year, so expect the Falcons to spend a pick or two up front.

Falcons | Tyson Jackson may not return    Mon Feb 20, 06:37 PM

Atlanta Falcons DT Tyson Jackson is not expected to return to the team next season at his current salary. He could return if he agrees to reduced salary. Jackson is scheduled to receive a base salary of $3.5 million in 2017 and is scheduled to count $5.85 million against the salary cap.

Falcons | Earl Mitchell to visit Falcons    Sun Feb 19, 02:16 PM

Free-agent DT Earl Mitchell (Dolphins) is scheduled to meet with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, Feb. 23, and Friday, Feb. 24, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is one of many stops for Mitchell. He was slowed by injuries during his time with the Dolphins, but he could be a rotational run-stuffer no matter where he lands.

Falcons | Taylor Gabriel wants to stay in Atlanta    Tue Feb 14, 05:48 PM

Atlanta Falcons restricted free-agent WR Taylor Gabriel said he wants to be a Falcon 'forever.' The Falcons also want their deep-threat receiver to stay. If the Falcons really want him back, they'll be able to place a high tender on Gabriel, forcing other prospective teams to have to surrender a first- or second-round pick in order to sign him. General manager Thomas Dimitroff said last week that a priority heading into free agency will be to re-sign Atlanta's free agents. The Falcons are expected to place a second-round tender worth around $2.8 million. A first-round tender would be worth around $4 million.

Footballguys view: Gabriel flourished under OC Kyle Shanahan in 2016. A castoff from the Browns, Gabriel's potential was untapped until the new 49ers head coach found a spot for him with the Falcons. With whatever tender they decide on, we feel the Falcons will find a way to keep Gabriel around for 2017.

Falcons | Atlanta wants to keep roster intact    Sun Feb 12, 07:10 PM

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the 'main focus' this offseason will be re-signing their own free agents. 'Every year, we've been pretty aggressive in free agency, and we think this year our focus is going to be on signing a number of players on our team who are up,' Dimitroff said.

Falcons | Atlanta happy with its roster    Sat Feb 11, 12:04 AM

Atlanta Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said the team doesn't have 'any major holes' on its roster, and the focus will be on adding depth heading into 2017.

Footballguys view: The Falcons were close, but as the Panthers will tell you; there's no guarantee of getting back to the postseason after a Super Bowl loss. We like the collection of talent in Atlanta, but they could add more impact players to the defense this offseason.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman scored most of TDs at home    Wed Feb 8, 08:04 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman rushed for 10 of his 11 touchdowns at home this season. He finished the season with 521 yards at home and 558 yards on the road.

Footballguys view: Freeman had another stellar year, even if he had an easier time finding the end zone at home than on the road. We think that will balance back out next season, and he should be a very nice fantasy starter in 2017.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman played well on the road    Wed Feb 8, 08:03 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman rushed for six of his eight touchdowns on the road this season. He also recorded two of his three receiving touchdowns on the road.

Footballguys view: Coleman's numbers would have been better had he not lost some time due to injury. We think he is a talented back who could be a starter elsewhere, but unless the Falcons decide Devonta Freeman isn't worth the money he wants, Coleman is splitting carries.

Falcons | Matt Ryan consistent in 2016    Wed Feb 8, 07:08 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan threw for 2,581 yards, 19 touchdowns and four interceptions at home this season while throwing for 2,363 yards, 19 touchdowns and three interceptions on the road.

Falcons | Atlanta names Keith Carter RBs coach    Wed Feb 8, 04:48 PM

Atlanta Falcons assistant offensive line coach Keith Carter has been named the team's new running backs coach.

Footballguys view: Carter's work on the offensive line helped the Falcons rushing attack immensely in 2016. He worked as a running backs coach at San Jose State in 2014. The Spartans ran for 1,696 yards with 11 touchdowns while averaging 141.3 yards per game during that season with Tyler Ervin (Texans) leading the way on the ground.

Falcons | Marquand Manuel a DC option for Falcons    Wed Feb 8, 04:17 PM

The Atlanta Falcons are strongly considering hiring secondary coach Marquand Manuel as their next defensive coordinator, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Manuel played eight years at safety in the NFL, and he's interviewed for a defensive coordinator job (2016) with the Jaguars. The Falcons are looking for a new defensive coordinator after failing to retain Richard Smith after Super Bowl 51.

Falcons | Richard Smith out as defensive coordinator    Wed Feb 8, 12:36 AM

Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Richard Smith will not return to the team in that capacity for 2017, according to Sporting News' Alex Marvez. Smith could be retained in a different role, but that isn't known at this point.

Footballguys view: Smith is exploring other options at this time. It's a surprise move for the Falcons, but reports reveal that Dan Quinn was taking over more of the defensive calls at the end of the regular season and into the postseason. After appearing in the Super Bowl, the Falcons will have replaced both their offensive and defensive coordinators.

Falcons | Two players signed by Falcons    Tue Feb 7, 03:37 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR B.J. Daniels and TE Darion Griswold were signed to Reserve/Future deals Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: Daniels is a converted quarterback, but don't expect him to turn into the next Terrelle Pryor.

Falcons | Extension coming for Devonta Freeman?    Tue Feb 7, 03:06 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman and the Falcons are 'in good space,' according to Thomas Dimitroff, in regards to a contract extension. Dimitroff said both sides will discuss a deal at the 'appropriate time.'

Footballguys view: That means the team will look to get an extension done with Freeman sometime around the scouting combine at the end of February. The Falcons have around $24 million in cap space at this time.

Falcons | Extension coming for Desmond Trufant    Tue Feb 7, 02:35 PM

Atlanta Falcons CB Desmond Trufant will be given a contract extension, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

Footballguys view: Trufant made it through nine games this year before a torn pectoral ended his season. He's the best cornerback on the team, so finding a way to lock him up makes a ton of sense for the Falcons.

Falcons | No surgery for Alex Mack    Tue Feb 7, 02:20 PM

Atlanta Falcons C Alex Mack (leg) will not need surgery on his fractured fibula, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Footballguys view: Mack showed incredible toughness playing with this broken leg in Super Bowl 51. Added in free agency last offseason, Mack is the best player on the offensive line and has quickly transformed into a trusted team leader.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman won't need surgery    Tue Feb 7, 02:14 PM

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (ankle) will not need surgery on his injured ankle, according to head coach Dan Quinn. A timetable for Coleman's recovery was not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Coleman was seen in a walking boot after the Super Bowl. This injury sounds minor, so Coleman should return in 2017 as a big part of the Falcons offense. He'll work as a change-of-pace runner with Devonta Freeman, but Coleman has worked hard to be a better receiver and that was evident this past season.

Falcons | Desmond Trufant expected back by OTAs    Tue Feb 7, 01:10 PM

Atlanta Falcons CB Desmond Trufant (pectoral) recently told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he 'should be' ready to participate in the team's offseason practices beginning in May.

Footballguys view: Trufant was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Nov. 29 and had surgery to reattach his left pectoral at the point where it attaches to his shoulder soon thereafter.

Falcons | Steve Sarkisian to run offense in Atlanta    Tue Feb 7, 12:33 PM

Updating a previous report, University of Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian has agreed to take the same job with the Atlanta Falcons. He replaces Kyle Shanahan, who left to become the head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on Monday, Feb. 6.

Footballguys view: It's a risky move for the Falcons since Sarkisian has no play-calling experience in the NFL. He was the offensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide in just one contest -- the loss to Clemson in the championship game. Sarkisian takes over an offense that has a ton of firepower, and we think he'll implement some of the concepts ran well in the Shanahan offense.

Falcons | Julio Jones to be evaluated in March    Tue Feb 7, 12:21 PM

Updating a previous story, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (toe) told ESPN.com's Vaughn McClure on Tuesday, Feb. 7, he will have his troublesome toe evaluated next month to decide if surgery is needed or not.

Footballguys view: Jones was able to play -- and play well -- while dealing with this toe injury through the postseason. If the evaluation indicates a need for surgery, Jones is going to be out for OTAs during his recovery. In fact, the recovery time could take him up to the start of training camp.

Falcons | Tevin Coleman in walking boot    Tue Feb 7, 12:20 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman (ankle) was spotted wearing a walking boot on his left foot Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: Coleman suffered an apparent ankle injury in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LI and did not return. The injury is considered minor at this time.

Falcons | Steve Sarkisian to be named OC in Atlanta    Tue Feb 7, 12:01 PM

Falcons | Ryan Schraeder has ligament tear    Mon Feb 6, 05:19 PM

Atlanta Falcons OT Ryan Schraeder (ankle) suffered a torn ligament in his right ankle during Super Bowl LI. He is scheduled to undergo further testing Tuesday, Feb. 7, according to a source, but is not expected to have surgery. The initial expected recovery time is a month.

Footballguys view: Schraeder played through the injury, joining teammate Alex Mack with gutsy performances on football's biggest stage.

Falcons | Atlanta ditched running game    Mon Feb 6, 04:47 PM

Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and the Atlanta offense ran the ball just five times after gaining a 28-3 lead against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.

Footballguys view: The last 23 minutes of this game will be dissected forever, but no decision by the Falcons will be maligned more than this one. Instead of leaving the Falcons a victor, Shanahan will be one of the goats in one of the greatest collapses in sports history.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman efficient in loss    Mon Feb 6, 04:12 AM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman ran 11 times for 75 yards and scored a touchdown in the team's 34-28 Super Bowl loss to the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Some think he should have had at least two more carries once the Falcons were in position to close the game out in the last 20 minutes. Freeman shared with Tevin Coleman this year, but still showed that he is an RB1 in fantasy and will get RB1 money as a free agent in 2018.

Falcons | Matt Ryan efficient in loss    Sun Feb 5, 11:07 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan completed 17 of his 23 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns in a 34-28 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI Sunday, Feb. 5.

Footballguys view: Ryan was not the reason the Falcons couldn't hold on to their 25 point lead. He was highly efficient, maybe even too efficient because the quickness of the teams scores meant their defense spent a lot more time on the field than their offense. Ryan missed out on the crowning achievement of his career, but it shouldn't take away from his career year.
