Falcons | Julio Jones ready for camp    Tue Jul 22, 06:11 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) will be ready for the start of training camp, as expected, but will be limited.

Footballguys view: Getting Jones back will be a huge boost for the Falcons offense. We should see better numbers from Matt Ryan and the passing game this year. Jones has a current ADP of WR6 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Atlanta Falcons DT Corey Peters (Achilles') and SS Zeke Motta (neck) were placed on the physically unable to perform list.

Falcons | Pat Angerer signing    Tue Jul 22, 04:14 PM

The Atlanta Falcons are signing free-agent LB Pat Angerer (Colts), according to a source. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: If Angerer is healthy, the Falcons have an upgrade at the linebacker position. They had to do something after losing Sean Weatherspoon to an Achilles' injury. Angerer must be fully recovered from the knee injury (and offseason surgery), and we should see him get plenty of chances to prove himself with his new team.

Falcons | Jeremy Ebert signs    Tue Jul 22, 04:08 PM

The Atlanta Falcons signed free-agent WR Jeremy Ebert (Jaguars), according to his agent. Terms of the deal were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Ebert is a camp body and will struggle to make the 53-man roster. He needs to stand out on special teams if he wants to make the team.

Falcons | Would be smart to extend Roddy White    Tue Jul 15, 02:08 PM

The Atlanta Falcons would be smart to extend the contract of WR Roddy White, in the opinion of Vaughn McClure of ESPN.com. A contract extension could help free cap space and lower White's cap space for 2014.

Footballguys view: White isn't overpaid right now. He has a $9.1 million cap number in 2014 with $4.4 million in dead money. A contract extension wouldn't be able to clear up a ton of money for this year. White is currently ranked 18th of all wide receivers in terms of average annual salary.

Falcons | Ra'Shede Hageman has huge expectations     Tue Jul 15, 12:47 PM

Atlanta Falcons DE Ra'Shede Hageman has huge expectations in 2014 after having a very impressive offseason where he showcased his strength and quickness.

Footballguys view: At 6'6" 320 pounds, Hageman is a powerful player with brute strength. He plays with rare flexibility and athleticism for a man his size. Hageman has yet to fully play up to his enormous potential, but the skill set is there for him to be a dominant player in the pros.

Falcons | Corey Peters' status for camp uncertain    Sun Jul 13, 11:37 PM

It is not known if Atlanta Falcons DT Corey Peters (Achilles') will be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: There's no need to rush Peters back before he's ready. Achilles' injuries aren't quite as devastating as they used to be in the NFL, but the Falcons need to proceed with caution here. Staring Peters on the camp PUP list is likely going to be their decision.

Falcons | Antone Smith may need special teams to make roster    Sat Jul 12, 11:17 AM

Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith may need to perform well on special teams if he wants a chance to make the final roster.

Footballguys view: Smith is a short/compact runner with a strong lower body. This helps him change direction smoothly and keep his balance when making cuts. Smith might be used as a special teams player, but he won't get many carries or be much of a fantasy factor if he makes the final roster.

Falcons | Two battling for No. 3 TE spot    Thu Jul 10, 08:21 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Mickey Shuler and TE Jacob Pedersen are likely battling for the No. 3 tight end spot on the roster.

Footballguys view: Two potential breakout players on the Black Eyed Joe All-Name Team (Levine Toilolo, Andrew Szczerba) will compete for the top two spots. There's not much fantasy value for anyone on the Falcons here. With Tony Gonzalez retiring, the team is left without a solid replacement. Toilolo is likely the starter, but we're not expecting him to do much. He's a low-end TE2 and that's about it.

Falcons | Place Drew Davis on PUP list    Sat Jul 5, 10:58 AM

The Atlanta Falcons placed WR Drew Davis (foot) on the training camp physically unable to perform list Saturday, July 5. Davis recently underwent a procedure on his foot that will require him to miss about six weeks.

Footballguys view: The PUP list for training camp is very different than the PUP list for the regular season. On the training camp PUP list a player can return at any time when he's healthy. On the regular season PUP list he's forced to miss the first six weeks of the season. We'll see if Davis can get healthy and compete at some point later in the preseason.

Falcons | Courtney Roby contract details    Thu Jul 3, 05:56 PM

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Courtney Roby's contract is a one-year deal worth $855,000, with no guaranteed money. The salary cap hit is $570,000 on minimum salary benefit.

Footballguys view: Roby will have minimal fantasy impact, especially on this very deep roster.

Falcons | Coach thinks team will rebound    Tue Jul 1, 03:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians thinks the Atlanta Falcons will bounce back this year, and he is not looking forward to playing them in 2014. "I'm not looking forward it," Arians said. "I thought (general manager Thomas Dimitroff) and (head coach Mike Smith) did a great job of really securing their lines of scrimmage, which I know was their goal. I know that Matt (Ryan) is going to come back strong. I could see the Falcons bouncing back real big this year."

Footballguys view: We're in agreement with Dodds, errrr... Arians here. The Falcons just need Julio Jones to stay healthy and that will greatly benefit what they do with their passing game. The running game will get a boost from rookie Devonta Freeman, and he can also be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield. The defense still has issues, so Atlanta is going to have to keep their foot on the gas as an offense and win shootouts in 2014.

Falcons | Will add Courtney Roby    Fri Jun 27, 07:04 PM

The Atlanta Falcons will sign free-agent WR Courtney Roby (Saints).

Footballguys view: Roby has plenty of experience, but we're not expecting much from him if he even makes the team. The nine-year pro has only 25 catches during his pro career. We'll see if he can make an impression as a special teams player as a return man.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman projected as back of the future    Fri Jun 27, 02:35 AM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman is projected as the three-down back of the future and may see some touches behind RB Steven Jackson. The battle for the third-down role will be between RB Antone Smith and RB Jacquizz Rodgers, whose special-teams impact might be reduced by the presence of WR/KR Devin Hester.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. Freeman has the ability to run between the tackles, but he stands out when he gets to space. He's a high-effort runner with moves and quickness in the open field. We love his lower body strength, and Freeman is a fun back to watch. Jackson's time with the Falcons is winding down, and Freeman could take over as the lead back as soon as next season.

Falcons | Tim Dobbins may see increased role on special teams    Wed Jun 25, 04:58 PM

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said LB Tim Dobbins may have to pick up some of the slack from players that have left the team. 'He's going to have to pick up some of the slack that we lost with a guy that's leaving our team,' Smith said. 'Akeem (Dent) was a central part on special teams. Dobbins has been a good special teams player. He's probably played more special teams snaps than he has defensive snaps. He has a track record, both as a first, second and third-down player and as a fourth-down player.'

Falcons | Julio Jones expects to be ready for camp    Fri Jun 20, 11:57 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) expects to be a full participant once training camp starts.

Footballguys view: It's wise for the Falcons to take it easy on Jones. They need him to be at full strength to boost the passing game. Even when training camp starts we should see Jones eased into the lineup.

Falcons | Zeke Motta to meet with doctor    Fri Jun 20, 11:55 PM

Falcons | Waive Dominique Davis    Thu Jun 19, 03:50 PM

The Atlanta Falcons waived QB Dominique Davis Thursday, June 19.

Footballguys view: After they acquired TJ Yates, someone was going to get cut. Nobody is going to get a sniff here unless Matt Ryan gets hurt, so there is no reason to roster any other Falcons QB on the depth chart besides him. In super, super deep dynasty leagues keep an eye on undrafted rookie Jeff Mathews (Cornell).

Falcons | Tim Dobbins signs    Thu Jun 19, 08:39 AM

The Atlanta Falcons signed free-agent LB Tim Dobbins (Texans) to a one-year, $855,000 deal.

Footballguys view: Dobbins is probably a camp body, though the Falcons have been on the market for depth for some time now. So if he has a great camp, he could stick.

Falcons | T.J. Yates acquired    Thu Jun 19, 08:20 AM

The Atlanta Falcons acquired QB T.J. Yates from the Houston Texans in exchange for LB Akeem Dent.

Footballguys view: Yates is now the most experienced quarterback not named "Matt Ryan" on the roster. He's a limited pocket-passer but could excel with the offense around him the Falcons have. Still nobody wants to see what life would look like without Ryan.

Falcons | Not signing Jonathan Vilma    Wed Jun 18, 05:03 PM

Updating a previous report, the Atlanta Falcons will not be signing free-agent LB Jonathan Vilma (Saints) after he workout today. It is still possible the team signs him at a later date.

Footballguys view: He could give Joplu Bartu an obstacle to starting again this year, but Vilma would be unlikely to have much fantasy value, even if he was a starter and signed by the Falcons. He is probably far from a three-down linebacker at this point and Vilma can be ignored in IDP leagues no matter where lands.

Falcons | Julio Jones feeling great    Tue Jun 17, 09:47 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones (foot) was able to run routes during OTAs and has been walking normally as he continues his recovery from a broken right foot. Jones also said that the rehab process has made him stronger overall. 'I feel great,' Jones said. 'I'm back doing the little things that I used to do. I'm back to the old Julio. I feel like I'm actually stronger now because I've been doing back squats; getting my quads stronger. Muscles in my hamstrings.'

Footballguys view: Jones is due back for Week 1 this year, and he'll likely go in the top 5-6 WRs off of the board and top 20 picks in almost every draft. He carries a little more risk with a foot that has broken twice in the last three years, but he also has the upside to finish in the top 3 and still outproduce his ADP.

Falcons | Roddy White excused from camp    Tue Jun 17, 09:43 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Roddy White (rest) will not participate in the team's three-day minicamp, head coach Mike Smith said Tuesday, June 17. 'We just felt like he needed to get some rest,' Smith said. 'He worked with us four days. We wanted to see where he was at. He worked extremely hard, so we're going to give him some time and let some of these young guys work.' White was also excused from a majority of OTAs last week following the death of his brother.

Footballguys view: This isn't comforting, but there's no reason to overreact to it. White had a high ankle sprain concealed from us during draft season last year and didn't get healthy until the last third of the season. The good news is that he was elite once again when healthy, so he's a value at his current fifth round ADP.

Falcons | Sean Weatherspoon placed on IR    Mon Jun 16, 05:10 PM

The Atlanta Falcons have placed LB Sean Weatherspoon (Achilles') on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: This move was expected, and it officially ends his season. The Falcons are going to be hurting on defense without him. Weatherspoon will enter free agency in 2015 after missing significant time over the last two years.

Falcons | Could have interest in Brandon Flowers    Fri Jun 13, 03:50 PM

The Atlanta Falcons could have interest in free-agent CB Brandon Flowers (Chiefs). The team had been monitoring the situation in case he was released.

Footballguys view: This makes sense for the Falcons. New assistant GM Scott Pioli was the former general manager with the Chiefs when Flowers was a standout player. They could use Flowers to give them veteran depth at the position, and he could be relied on as a part-time starter in case of injuries in front of him on the depth chart.

Falcons | Tim Dobbins to visit    Thu Jun 12, 09:41 AM

The Atlanta Falcons will visit with free-agent LB Tim Dobbins (Texans) this week.

Footballguys view: The Falcons could use more versatile depth and lifting up every rock now that Sean Weatherspoon is done for the year. Dobbins can step in but he won't be a huge factor, mostly relegated to rotational duty.

Falcons | Osi Umenyiora to pass rush    Thu Jun 12, 09:12 AM

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith said DE Osi Umenyiora will be the designated pass-rusher in their defense. Umenyiora has dropped 10 pounds to 250 pounds for this season. 'I hope (his regular-season reps) are a lot. That means they're throwing a lot and that means we're in the lead,' Smith said. 'In a 60-play game, you're looking somewhere in between 25 to 35 (snaps.) He'll be fresh. I think it will be a very good thing. And I think at the end of last season, when we put him in as a defensive pass-rusher and that's all he was doing and his number of snaps went down, I thought he was much more productive.'

Footballguys view: We only expect him to play between 20-35 snaps a game, so his role is definitely limited. That said, he could be more effective for it. Certainly the Falcons need help with pass rush duties and Umenyiora should be able to succeed as a situational pass rusher.

Falcons | Looking hard at Jonathan Vilma    Wed Jun 11, 10:13 PM

The Atlanta Falcons are looking hard at free-agent LB Jonathan Vilma (Saints) to replace the injured LB Sean Weatherspoon (Achilles'). If Vilma checks out medically, as he has had a knee issue in the past, the team might bring him in for a visit soon, according to a source.
