Falcons | Julio Jones wants contract update    Fri May 18, 10:22 PM

Updating a previous report, Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is not expected to participate in organized team activities in part because he wants the team to update his contract.

Footballguys view: We should see the Falcons move to get something done with the superstar receiver. He's got three years left on his deal and doesn't hit free agency until 2021. Jones has been in regular contact with head coach Dan Quinn and the team is open to updating Jones' contract. Jones is scheduled to make $10.5 million in 2018.

Falcons | Julio Jones not expected at workouts    Fri May 18, 04:48 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is not expected to report for organized team activities next week, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Jones not attending could actually be good for the Falcons. Hear us out. This will give Matt Ryan more time with rookie Calvin Ridley, which can only pay off when the regular season starts. They'll have some extra time to build chemistry.

Falcons | Terrence Magee waived    Tue May 15, 04:10 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Terrence Magee was waived Tuesday, May 15. Free-agent DB Jason Hall (Seahawks) was signed in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Magee has bounced around to a few different teams as a pro. In three years he only has five career carries...and he may find it difficult to latch on with another team now that he's on the open market.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley getting work all over the field    Sun May 13, 02:20 PM

Atlanta Falcons first-round WR Calvin Ridley lined up in the slot as well as outside during rookie minicamp Saturday, May 12. Ridley is also under consideration to return kickoffs and punts, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Footballguys view: Ridley has the route-running ability to line up anywhere on the field. He knows how to set defenders up before making his break, and Ridley can accelerate past corners once the rock is in his hands. We're excited to see what the rookie from Alabama could do, especially with Julio Jones drawing so much coverage away. Ridley has a current ADP of WR47 (11.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Falcons | Austin Hooper has been working with QB    Thu May 10, 03:26 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper has been working with QB Matt Ryan this offseason in hopes of building better chemistry with Ryan.

Footballguys view: Hooper doubled his reception and yardage totals in 2017, and the third-year player is hoping for a more significant role in the offense. With rookie WR Calvin Ridley joining the team though, Hooper's prospects for that take a bit of a hit. Too many mouths, not enough to eat is the biggest problem, though his struggles to stretch the field hurt as well.

Falcons | Atlanta signs four rookies    Wed May 9, 03:23 PM

Atlanta Falcons CB Isaiah Oliver, RB Ito Smith, WR Russell Gage jr. and LB Foyesade Oluokun signed their four-year rookie contracts Wednesday, May 9.

Footballguys view: Smith is a bit undersized for a running back at 5'9" 201 pounds, but he's got natural hands and can relied upon as a receiving option out of the backfield. Gage is at least going to be a special teams contributor at the pro level, but he's got the athleticism and competitiveness to contribute as a slot receiver in the future if he better rounds out that part of his game.

Falcons | Matt Ryan getting paid in 2018    Fri May 4, 10:11 AM

Updating previous reports, Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan will make $52.5 million in 2018, due in large part, to a $46.5 million signing bonus.

Footballguys view: Ryan will become the first NFL quarterback to cross the $30 million annually threshold. Don't be too shocked, this is going to be the norm for franchise quarterbacks going forward. The Falcons have helped him greatly this offseason by adding top WR Calvin Ridley in the first round of the 2018 NFL draft.

Falcons | Matt Ryan agrees to extension    Thu May 3, 04:08 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Falcons Thursday, May 3, that will make him the first quarterback to make $30 million per season, according to sources. The deal includes $100 million in guaranteed money.

Footballguys view: Well, that was expensive, but after Kirk Cousins got his money, also expected. The Packers now face the same situation with Aaron Rodgers. As for the Falcons, the way they have structured the deal will impact the rest of the team -- after all, there's only so much money to go around. For fantasy owners, Ryan has new weapons around him (hello WR Calvin Ridley!) and should post his usual QB1 numbers in 2018.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman able to cut    Wed May 2, 12:58 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee) is able to run and cut now in his rehab from ligament damage in his knee.

Footballguys view: A sprained MCL and PCL late last year didn't require surgery, but it was a concern for Freeman heading into this season. It sounds like he's on track in his recovery.

Falcons | Six UDFAs sign with Falcons    Tue May 1, 11:31 AM

Undrafted free-agent RB Justin Crawford (West Virginia), WR Christian Blake (Northern Illinois), WR Detrich Clark (Colorado State), WR Devin Gray (Cincinnati), WR Lamar Jordan (New Mexico) and TE Troy Mangen (Ohio) signed three-year contracts with the Atlanta Falcons Tuesday, May 1.

Falcons | Atlanta adds flurry of UDFAs    Sun Apr 29, 12:13 PM

Undrafted free-agent RB Malik Williams (Louisville), TE Jake Roh (Boise State), QB Kurt Benkert (Virginia), FB Daniel Marx (Stanford) and RB Demario Richard (Arizona State) signed undisclosed contracts with the Atlanta Falcons.

Footballguys view: Benkert was a favorite sleeper of a few draft analysts and he could find a spot on the practice squad to develop as a potential replacement for Matt Schaub. Richard is a power back who actually passed Dolphins draft pick Kalen Ballage on the depth chart last year.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley could return kickoffs and punts    Sun Apr 29, 09:58 AM

The Atlanta Falcons could experiment with using WR Calvin Ridley as a kickoff returner and punt returner at the team's rookie camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn. Ridley returned just two punts for four yards at Alabama and did not return any kickoffs.

Footballguys view: Ridley has good speed and he's likely to start as the team's third receiver, so they might look for chances to manufacture more opportunities for him. Return yardage leagues should monitor this development.

Falcons | Russell Gage added in Round 6    Sat Apr 28, 04:27 PM

The Atlanta Falcons selected Louisiana State WR Russell Gage Jr. with the 194th pick (Round 6) of the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Gage has a lot of athletic ability and is super-competitive, but barely had any production in college. More than likely a special teams player who does have some upside because of his overall speed and toughness.

Falcons | Atlanta selects Ito Smith    Sat Apr 28, 01:18 PM

The Atlanta Falcons selected Southern Mississippi RB Ito Smith with the 126th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Saturday, April 28.

Footballguys view: Called "Ito" when he was small because his family felt he looked like Judge Ito, who presided over the OJ Simpson trial (wow we feel old), he may be undersized but he's durable and a workhorse. He doesn't have much explosiveness, and his lack of size may make it hard for him to gain enough consistent yards to warrant carries, but his pass-catching ability could keep him around in camp.

Falcons | Atlanta takes Isaiah Oliver    Fri Apr 27, 08:53 PM

The Atlanta Falcons selected Colorado CB Isaiah Oliver with the 58th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Friday, April 27.

Footballguys view: A guy who some analysts had a lot higher in their rankings, Oliver is an old school long corner with some very good ball skills. Also has some decent speed, though he seems to fit better in press coverage then off coverage.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley to line up in multiple spots    Fri Apr 27, 02:17 AM

Atlanta Falcons WR Calvin Ridley will play outside and in the slot, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Footballguys view: Ridley could feast across from Julio Jones and being able to move him around in the formation means he'll be on the field a lot. We love him in this offense where his speed and route running would already be an issue for defenses even without Jones.

Falcons | Calvin Ridley selected by Falcons    Thu Apr 26, 11:00 PM

The Atlanta Falcons selected Alabama WR Calvin Ridley with the 26th overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft Thursday, April 26.

Footballguys view: The Falcons know from Alabama receivers. Ridley's speed, route-running ability and ability to separate will put him in a position to really feast off the coverage he will get across from Julio Jones. Matt Ryan has to be thrilled.

Falcons | Julio Jones not at workouts     Thu Apr 19, 01:48 PM

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is not participating in the voluntary offseason program this week. Head coach Dan Quinn said he already knew Jones wouldn't be at the program.

Footballguys view: Quinn isn't worried and neither are so neither are we. Jones is likely to be a top fantasy WR in 2018 and he'll be in camp.

Falcons | Atlanta checking out several prospects    Sun Apr 8, 10:32 PM

The Atlanta Falcons sent several members of their front office to North Carolina State's pro day Saturday, April 7, focusing on DT B.J. Hill, RB Nyheim Hines, RB Jaylen Samuels and DT Tony Adams.

Footballguys view: Hines would be an interesting situation to monitor if the Falcons picked him up. There's some Curtis Samuel (Panthers) to his game as Hines can line up as a receiver or make dynamic plays from the backfield. Samuels was his backfield mate for the Wolfpack, but he's a larger back (225 pounds) who can grind or catch passes. Both backs should go off the board in the third or fourth round of the 2018 NFL draft.

Falcons | Atlanta meets with DaeSean Hamilton    Fri Apr 6, 01:45 PM

Penn State WR DaeSean Hamilton worked out for the Atlanta Falcons on Friday, April 6.

Footballguys view: Hamilton has good speed and quickness within the route tree. He does a good job of looking the ball into his hands and can work sideline routes effectively. Expect him to be a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL draft. The Falcons could use some help at the WR position, and Hamilton could compete as a no.3 receiver behind Julio Jones and Mohamed Sanu.

Falcons | Atlanta, Matt Ryan close to extension    Tue Apr 3, 01:37 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan is reportedly close to signing a contract extension with the team, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

Footballguys view: Ryan's extension should be closer to Drew Brees numbers than Kirk Cousins, showing the value of keeping your franchise quarterback in the building instead of signing him in free agency. He's likely to play his entire career with the Falcons.

Falcons | Devonta Freeman's knee improving    Fri Mar 30, 10:51 PM

Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman (knee) said his injured knee is 'definitely progressing on the up and up.'

Footballguys view: Freeman should be a full go by the time training camp rolls around. He played through his knee injury last year and avoided surgery. Expect the Falcons to keep Freeman limited through OTAs and minicamp.

Falcons | Austin Hooper poised to break out?    Fri Mar 30, 10:24 PM

Atlanta Falcons TE Austin Hooper will make a 'big jump' in 2018, according to head coach Dan Quinn.

Footballguys view: Hooper took a jump in 2017 during his sophomore season compared to his rookie season in 2016. He finished as the 18th fantasy tight end last year with 49 catches for 526 yards and three touchdowns. To make a 'big jump' could put him in the top 10 at his position. Something to keep in mind for dynasty owners and redraft owners for the 2018 season.

Falcons | Nick Chubb visiting Atlanta    Fri Mar 30, 09:49 PM

Georgia RB Nick Chubb is scheduled to work out for the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, April 4.

Footballguys view: Chubb is one of the most natural and instinctive runners in the 2018 NFL draft. He should be a second-round pick because of his size/strength combination. At 5'11" 225 pounds, Chubb is balanced when he changes direction and can run through arm tackles with ease. The Falcons have a stacked backfield with Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman, but Coleman is set to be a free agent in 2019. Adding Chubb in the draft would give the Falcons a great back with starter -- and star -- potential.

Falcons | Atlanta to host Vyncint Smith    Fri Mar 30, 09:44 PM

Limestone College WR Vyncint Smith is scheduled to work out for the Atlanta Falcons Monday, April 2.

Footballguys view: Smith has a few teams interested after running a 4.36 40-yard dash at South Carolina's pro day. At 6'3" 195 pounds, Smith cathered in 153 passes for 2,371 yards and 11 touchdowns in four years with the Saints of Limestone College. The Falcons and Cowboys have shown the most interest and Smith should be a priority college free agent available after the draft.

Falcons | Matt Ryan extension talks hit 'snag'    Wed Mar 21, 10:46 PM

Atlanta Falcons QB Matt Ryan's talks with the club concerning a contract extension 'appear to have hit a snag,' with general manager Thomas Dimitroff saying he couldn't put a timetable on it. He added he doesn't know how close the two sides are but that 'we talk about it and it seems like things are right around the corner.'

Footballguys view: This will get done eventually, and 'snags' happen when you are talking the money they likely are. You don't let franchise quarterbacks walk, so this is just a matter of time.
