Falcons | Devonta Freeman works with starters Tue May 26, 09:29 PM
Atlanta Falcons RB Devonta Freeman worked with the first-team offense during organized team activities Tuesday, May 26.
|Footballguys view: Freeman is a nice fit in the Kyle Shanahan offense. He's built low to the ground, has a powerful lower body and can change direction without losing much speed. Freeman will compete with rookie Tevin Coleman to be the lead back for the Falcons in 2015. No matter who wins the starting job, the Falcons should use some form of RBBC....stay tuned.|

Falcons | Julio Jones attending OTAs Tue May 26, 07:16 PM
Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones was present for the start of organized team activities Tuesday, May 26, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: Jones has one year remaining on his current contract but there have been no talks yet between the team and Jones regarding a new deal. There's going to be a few other big-name wide receivers who might get new contracts before Jones does. The market for these contracts needs to be set by guys like Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas. There doesn't seem to be any hurry to get a new deal done with Jones.|

Falcons | Antone Smith hopes to be in RB mix Mon May 25, 06:57 PM
Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith (leg) is still recovering from a broken leg, but he hopes to be back in the mix by the start of training camp in late July. "The recovery is going pretty good," Smith said. "I'm up and running. I'm almost full force, but not quite where I need to be. In time, that will take care of itself," said Smith.
|Footballguys view: Smith is built low to the ground, but he can make big plays in the open field. He does a good job of picking and cutting his way through trash as a runner, and Smith has incredible foot frequency which allows him to change direction without losing much speed. If healthy, finding touches behind rookie (starter?) Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman could be difficult.|

Falcons | Vic Beasley still hasn't signed Mon May 25, 06:51 PM
Atlanta Falcons OLB Vic Beasley has yet to sign his rookie contract, as of Monday, May 25. The Falcons may need to start their offseason team activities without their eighth overall pick from the 2015 NFL Draft.
|Footballguys view: Rookie contracts are no big deal in today's NFL. There's a rookie salary cap, and contracts are built from the deals around the pick. Beasley will make a little less than the 7th-overall pick (Bears WR Kevin White) and a little more than the 9th-overall pick (Giants OT Ereck Flowers). Something should be done with the rookie pass-rusher shortly.|
Falcons | Brooks Reed injures groin Sun May 24, 04:21 PM
Atlanta Falcons LB Brooks Reed (groin) suffered a minor groin injury during a recent voluntary minicamp for veteran players.
|Footballguys view: He could wind up missing the beginning of OTAs as a result. LB O'Brien Schofield is expected to receive reps with the first team during his absence.|

Falcons | Two ATL backs could split carries Sun May 24, 04:19 PM
The Atlanta Falcons could use a two-back system this season where RBs Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman wind up receiving equal reps.
|Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. We love Coleman's upside and big-play ability--especially in a Kyle Shanahan offense. Coleman reminds some in the scouting community of DeMarco Murray because of his upright running style, decisiveness and ability to create big plays in space. Freeman is no slouch either. He's built low to the ground and can change directions without losing much speed. It's a good problem to have for the Falcons, but it could create headaches for fantasy owners.|
Falcons | Joplo Bartu avoids suspension Thu May 21, 07:14 PM
Atlanta Falcons LB Joplo Bartu was fined $50,000 for an alcohol-related offense after a two-game suspension was rescinded, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com.
|Footballguys view: Bartu started 27 games over the last two years, but he will have to fight for a roster spot in 2015 due to the additions the Falcons made this offseason.|

Falcons | Justin Hardy to be No. 3 WR for ATL? Thu May 21, 06:50 PM
Atlanta Falcons WR Justin Hardy is projected as the Falcons' No. 3 receiver behind WRs Julio Jones and Roddy White, according to NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal.
|Footballguys view: With Harry Douglas in Tennessee, the Falcons needed to add another wide receiver to the mix and that's why Hardy was their fourth-round pick. Coming out of East Carolina, Hardy is a smart player who does the little things well. He'll come back to the football after sitting down in a zone. Hardy can also reach for passes and pluck them out of the air naturally. He's got large hands and a long wingspan that help him play bigger than his size.|
Falcons | Antone Smith progresses to running Thu May 21, 08:33 AM
Atlanta Falcons RB Antone Smith (leg) has began running during his rehabilitation from a fractured right leg he suffered Nov. 16, 2014. Smith said he is almost running full force. It is unlikely he will be cleared for the beginning of organized team activities Tuesday, May 26, though.
|Footballguys view: Smith is more notable for his five touchdowns in ten games last season before the injury. He showed some big-play, home-run ability, but will fight with Tevin Coleman and Devonta Freeman for playing time. Still, his speed and ability to get outside fits well with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's scheme. He's worth watching as a late-round flier or free agency acquisition.|

Falcons | Levine Toilolo to start at TE for ATL? Wed May 20, 03:48 PM
Atlanta Falcons TE Levine Toilolo is the projected starting tight end this season. TEs Jacob Tamme, Tony Moeaki and Mickey Shuler will also be in the mix at the position this offseason.
|Footballguys view: Toilolo isn't an exciting fantasy option. We're keeping an eye on veteran Jacob Tamme. He's still got the ability to get open against zone coverage, and Tamme can do something with the rock after the catch. Neither player is getting drafted in 14-round, 12-team PPR leagues at this time.|

Falcons | William Moore hopes to be cleared soon Mon May 18, 10:39 PM
Atlanta Falcons SS William Moore (shoulder) said he hopes to receive clearance to practice in a few weeks. He said he is still rehabbing his surgically repaired shoulder but his body feels good.
|Footballguys view: Moore is expected to be one of the starting safeties in 2015 if he is healthy. Getting Moore back would boost the Falcons secondary. They'll also benefit from a better group of pass-rushers up front.|

Falcons | Tevin Coleman signs with Atlanta Tue May 12, 04:33 PM
Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman signed a four-year contract Tuesday, May 12. Financial terms were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: We love this addition for the Falcons. Coleman will compete with Devonta Freeman for the starting running back position. We like the rookie in this competition. Coleman has a running style similar to that of DeMarco Murray (Eagles). Coleman runs upright, but he's a swift runner with field-flipping speed. He can score from anywhere on the field, and Coleman is always looking for that big play. Coleman will be a fine fit in the Kyle Shanahan offense. His current ADP is RB43 (9.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.|
Falcons | Jalen Collins signs first deal Sun May 10, 02:25 AM
Atlanta Falcons CB Jalen Collins, the team's second-round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, signed his rookie contract Saturday, May 9. Financial terms were not made available.
|Footballguys view: Collins could have easily been a first-round pick in the draft. The Falcons crushed the draft in nearly every round, and Collins could develop into a fine starter for this team eventually.|
Falcons | Jalen Collins will be ready for camp Fri May 8, 04:40 PM
Atlanta Falcons CB Jalen Collins (foot) did not participate in practice Friday, May 8, for precautionary reasons but will be ready for training camp, according to head coach Dan Quinn.
|Footballguys view: It's a good move for the Falcons to take it easy here. Collins can be eased into offseason installment with an eye on full participation at the start of training camp.|
Falcons | Jalen Collins sitting out Fri May 8, 02:05 PM
Atlanta Falcons CB Jalen Collins (foot) is not participating in drills Friday, May 8, since he underwent foot surgery earlier in the offseason. He expected to participate once the rookie minicamp began.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons had arguably the greatest draft of any team in the NFL. There's no need to rush Collins back here. The Falcons should just ease him into action with a goal of having him near full strength by Week 1.|
Falcons | Tevin Coleman a favorite to start? Tue May 5, 02:31 PM
Atlanta Falcons RB Tevin Coleman could see the majority of work in the Falcons' backfield in 2015, with Devonta Freeman closely behind him, according to D. Orlando Ledbetter of the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
|Footballguys view: We love Coleman's upside and ability. He's an upright runner in the mold of DeMarco Murray (Eagles), and Coleman has the speed to score from anywhere on the field. Coleman gets stronger as the game goes on, and he should be able to take advantage of defenses focused on stopping the Falcons passing game.|
Falcons | No talks between Julio Jones, ATL Mon May 4, 01:22 PM
Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones has not had any contract extension talks with the team at this time, but general manager Thomas Dimitroff said extending Jones is one of the team's priorities.
|Footballguys view: Jones is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2016. If the Falcons don't want to lose him, then they need to sign him to a new contract. They could also place the franchise tag on Jones next offseason. That number was $12.823 million for receivers this season.|

Falcons | Tevin Coleman picked by ATL Fri May 1, 10:10 PM
The Atlanta Falcons selected University of Indiana RB Tevin Coleman in Round 3 of the 2015 NFL Draft (No. 73 overall) Friday, May 1.
|Footballguys view: Atlanta gets a solid player, who has big-time speed and runs very violently. He's going to punish defenses and the biggest question is whether he can become a more patient runner. This is a great fit though.|
Falcons | Jalen Collins selected 42nd overall Fri May 1, 08:07 PM
Louisiana State CB Jalen Collins was selected 42nd overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the second round of the 2015 NFL Draft Friday, May 1.
|Footballguys view: A nice fit for the Atlanta secondary who is a big corner who can match up with the big NFC South receivers.|
Falcons | Five players waived Fri May 1, 06:09 PM
Atlanta Falcons FS Brandan Bishop, OT Reid Fragel, CB Jordan Mabin, LB Jacques Smith and RB Ronnie Wingo were waived Friday, May 1.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons are just clearing roster space for incoming rookies and undrafted free agent rookie. None of these players were really likely to make the final roster.|
Falcons | Vic Beasley selected eighth overall Thu Apr 30, 09:01 PM
Clemson LB Vic Beasley was selected eighth overall by the Atlanta Falcons in the 2015 NFL Draft Thursday, April 30.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons get some incredible value with a guy who has great first-step quickness and is a problem for any offensive line trying to block him. The Falcons were desperate for a pass rusher and they got one of the best in the draft.|
Falcons | Adam Carriker not offered contract Wed Apr 29, 07:03 PM

Falcons | Shane Ray still on draft board Tue Apr 28, 09:01 PM
Former Missouri DE/LB Shane Ray is still on the Falcons' draft board, according to head coach Dan Quinn, Tuesday, April 28. Ray was cited Monday, April 27, for marijuana possession and will be enrolled in the NFL's substance abuse program.
|Footballguys view: Longtime NFL writer Dan Pompei tweeted today that scouts are still telling him Ray will go in the first. He has been a subject of production vs film/metrics debate and no matter what happens in his career, Ray will be used as proof of what's important/not important in a player's scouting report.|
Falcons | Not pursuing Adrian Peterson Sat Apr 25, 03:01 AM
Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson is not being pursued by the Atlanta Falcons, according to Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons are likely to draft a back this year, and Peterson is going to cost a lot in any trade scenario. Devonta Freeman is an interesting second-year back to monitor this season. He could be the lead runner in the Falcons RBBC.|
Adrian Peterson player page
Falcons | Mario Alford works out Sat Apr 25, 02:44 AM
West Virginia WR Mario Alford visited and worked out privately for the Atlanta Falcons.
|Footballguys view: Alford is a fast wide receiver with the track speed to blow by defenders. He lacks the route-running ability to thrive on underneath passes, but his speed makes him dangerous after the catch on crossing routes. Alford could contribute as a return man because of his ability to fly down the field. We should see him go off the board in the fifth round.|
Falcons | Tevin Coleman visits Fri Apr 24, 03:00 AM
Indiana RB Tevin Coleman visited the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday, April 22.
|Footballguys view: It's hard to say with confidence that the Atlanta Falcons have their backfield set with Devonta Freeman, Antone Smith, Jerome Smith and Ronnie Wingo. Since that's the case, having Coleman for a visit makes sense. Coleman is an aggressive runner who can catch the ball out of the backfield as well. He has good straight-line speed and is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. His 4.3/4.4 40 time at Indiana's Pro Day could push him up boards, but he could still be there by Atlanta's second round pick.|
Falcons | T.J. Clemmings to visit Atlanta Tue Apr 21, 10:18 AM
Pittsburgh OT T.J. Clemmings will visit the Atlanta Falcons this week.
|Footballguys view: Clemmings is a former defensive lineman who has only been playing offensive tackle for two years. He's incredibly athletic, strong and agile but his technique needs work. Clemmings might have the best upside of any of the right tackle prospects in this year's draft class.|
Falcons | Akeem Hunt drawing interest in ATL Mon Apr 20, 09:30 AM
Purdue RB Akeem Hunt has drawn interest from the Atlanta Falcons.
|Footballguys view: Hunt is your classic triple threat who often draws comparisons to Darren Sproles (Eagles). At 183 pounds, Hunt is a smaller back with explosive playmaking capability as an outside runner, receiver out of the backfield (or the slot) and kick/punt returner.|
Falcons | Leonard Williams to meet with team Thu Apr 16, 02:46 PM
Southern California DE Leonard Williams is scheduled to meet with the Atlanta Falcons Friday, April 17.
|Footballguys view: There's a good chance Williams is long gone by the time Atlanta picks. Widely considered the safest pick in the draft (and certainly the best D-line guy), Williams can play tackle or end, and has a good combination of size, easy athleticism and raw power.|
Falcons | Joe Hawley expects to be ready for camp Thu Apr 16, 01:14 PM
Atlanta Falcons C Joe Hawley (knee) said he started running about a month ago and expects to be ready for the start of training camp.
|Footballguys view: The offensive line had a lot of problems last season and having their center healthy would be a huge help. If they want to succeed it has to start on the offensive line.|
Falcons | Marcus Peters works out Wed Apr 15, 01:39 PM
Washington CB Marcus Peters worked out for the Atlanta Falcons Wednesday, April 15, according to a source.
|Footballguys view: Peters was kicked off the Huskies last year after multiple infractions with the coaching staff. He has the size, speed and athleticism to dominate on the outside. Some in the scouting community have compared his skill set to that of Aqib Talib (Broncos). The Falcons selected his former college teammate Marcus Trufant in the first round of the 2013 NFL draft. Even with his character concerns, Peters should be a first-round pick this year.|
Falcons | Ameer Abdullah works out Wed Apr 15, 07:51 AM
Nebraska RB Ameer Abdullah worked out recently with the Atlanta Falcons, according to a team source.
|Footballguys view: Abdullah is a smaller back, but he's incredibly explosive and can break off long runs in the open field. Pass protection is certainly an issue that he'll have to get better at in the NFL. Abdullah is a willing inside runner, but his lack of size means he's not going to be a pile-pusher in the NFL. He's best used as a threat in space. He's a fantastic receiver out of the backfield, and Abdullah is athletic enough to line up in the slot at times.|
Falcons | Working out several MIA prospects Sat Apr 11, 01:42 PM
Miami (Fla.) WR Phillip Dorsett, Miami (Fla.) TE Clive Walford, Miami (Fla.) RB Duke Johnson, Miami (Fla.) OT Ereck Flowers and Miami (Fla.) CB Ladarius Gunter are all working out for the Atlanta Falcons Saturday, April 11. Miami (Fla.) LB Denzel Perryman is not working out for Atlanta but is meeting with the team.
|Footballguys view: There's a lot to like about these Hurricanes prospects. Dorsett has good speed and can be a big-play weapon at wideout. Walford can make difficult catches seem routine, and he's the second-best tight end in this draft class. Johnson is a smaller back, but he has good all-purpose ability. The Falcons are looking for plenty of help in the draft on both sides of the ball.|
Falcons | Atlanta still considering Randy Gregory? Thu Apr 9, 10:43 PM
Nebraska DE/LB Randy Gregory hasn't been ruled out as an option in the 2015 NFL Draft for the Atlanta Falcons despite his failed drug test, but general manager Thomas Dimitroff said more research is required for any player that has broken the law.
|Footballguys view: Gregory is part of an enticing edge defender class that is mimicking the prominent role the position played in a similarly first-round talent deprived draft class. His weight set off mild alarm bells at the combine and the marijuana use was a pre-existing issue before the draft, so the Falcons will have to be bowled over by Gregory to still take him 8th. Florida edge defender Dante Fowler Jr. has a history with new head coach Dan Quinn, so he remains a real possibility if he's still there too.|
Falcons | Worked out Randy Gregory Thu Apr 9, 01:11 PM
Nebraska DE/LB Randy Gregory recently worked out for the Atlanta Falcons. The workout occurred after the news about Gregory's failed drug test was broken.
|Footballguys view: As the Falcons are moving back to a 3-4 base (they run a hybrid, as does almost the whole league, but it's going to base a 3-4) they could use a tough linebacker with length and speed, who could help against the run. He's raw, but the potential to be a great linebacker or defensive end is there. We'll see if he can kick weed, as Gregory has three known positive tests for marijuana...including his latest hot test which came at the scouting combine earlier this year.|
Falcons | Bud Dupree visiting Thu Apr 9, 12:50 PM
Kentucky LB Bud Dupree is meeting with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, April 9.
|Footballguys view: We think 8th overall might be a tad high for Dupree, but he's an explosive, powerful athlete who didn't consistently play to his potential in Kentucky. He could be a great fit in Atlanta's front seven once he improve his pass-rush skills a little.|
Falcons | Meeting with Vic Beasley Thu Apr 9, 12:50 PM
Clemson LB Vic Beasley is meeting with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, April 9.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons could use a pass rushing outside linebacker and Beasley is considered one of the top two in this draft. If he is there at No. 8, the Falcons should jump on him.|
Falcons | Zeke Motta waived Thu Apr 2, 02:07 PM
Atlanta Falcons SS Zeke Motta was waived Thursday, April 2.
|Footballguys view: Motta missed most of the 2014 season (his rookie year) with a neck injury he sustained in December of 2013, which required surgery. At most a special teamer, it might be hard for him to see interest from another team.|
Falcons | Atlanta to bring Matt Schaub back? Mon Mar 30, 11:29 PM
The Atlanta Falcons are interested in free-agent QB Matt Schaub (Raiders). The Falcons, Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets are interested in his services, and a source said he is expected to choose a team this week.
|Footballguys view: Schaub began his career with the Falcons. In 2004, the Falcons selected Schaub in the third round of the draft. He was then a backup behind Michael Vick, but eventually was traded to the Houston Texans for two second-round picks in 2007. Schaub is not the same player he used to be, but he could give some team quality veteran depth at the position.|

Falcons | Nick Marshall worked out Mon Mar 30, 01:36 PM
Auburn QB/CB Nick Marshall worked out privately for the Atlanta Falcons this past weekend. Marshall participated in only cornerback drills during the workout.
|Footballguys view: Marshall is not a quarterback at the pro level. He was moved to cornerback during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year, and that's where he'll have to find a home in the pros. He's a good athlete, but obviously he's raw at the cornerback position.|
Falcons | Will lose fifth-round pick Mon Mar 30, 01:13 PM
The Atlanta Falcons will lose a 2016 fifth-round draft choice and have been fined $350,000 for piping in crowd noise during home games over the last two seasons. President Rich McKay will also be suspended from the NFL's competition committee from April 1 until at least June 30.
|Footballguys view: The Falcons have likely learned their lesson here. They messed up by pumping in crowd noise, and now they're paying the price. The NFL went a little light on the Falcons here compared to what some thought could happen.|
Falcons | Could add Matt Schaub Fri Mar 27, 12:26 PM
Free-agent QB Matt Schaub (Raiders) could be added by the Atlanta Falcons, as they currently have QBs T.J. Yates and Sean Renfree backing up QB Matt Ryan. New Falcons head coach Dan Quinn didn't rule out signing Schaub, who is familiar with offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's systems from his days with the Houston Texans.
|Footballguys view: Schaub was a third-round pick for the Falcons in the 2004 NFL draft. He played three seasons with the Falcons behind QB Michael Vick.|

Falcons | Tony Moeaki signed Thu Mar 19, 03:22 PM
Free-agent TE Tony Moeaki (Seahawks) signed with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, March 19. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.
|Footballguys view: Moeaki has had some moments but has largely been unimpressive in part because the last two seasons were injury-riddled. He has potential, but he cannot stay on the field (he had this problem in college too). Can he stay healthy? If he can he might be a very productive fantasy TE2 at least. But injuries make him a shaky TE3 at best. He'll split time with Jacob Tamme in 2015.|

Falcons | Atlanta eyeing Devin Funchess Thu Mar 19, 12:11 PM
Michigan TE Devin Funchess worked out for the Atlanta Falcons this week as the draft approaches. Funchess is projected to be taken in the second round this year, and he has played both tight end and receiver. The Falcons had a league-low 241 yards from the tight end position in 2014, according to ESPN Stats and Information. New offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan is used to getting plenty of production from his tight ends.
|Footballguys view: While they signed Jacob Tamme, he's not a long-term fix. Funchess is a decent tight end prospect in a weak class. As the piece mentions, Shanahan needs a more prolific tight end, and Funchess can catch the ball. He could get a lot of work as a rookie.|
Falcons | Jacob Tamme signs with Atlanta Thu Mar 19, 10:57 AM
Free-agent TE Jacob Tamme (Broncos) signed an undisclosed deal with the Atlanta Falcons Thursday, March 19.
|Footballguys view: Tamme isn't a long-term answer at the position, but he'll certainly help. Buried behind Julius Thomas in Denver, Tamme might have more left in the tank than some think. The Falcons have been looking for a good tight end since Tony Gonzalez retired, and now they have one. Tamme isn't going to set the world on fire, but he could be a solid TE2 for fantasy owners.|
