Fairley's heart condition has caused one doctor to recommend he retire and another to give a less conclusive answer. He is seeking a third opinion at this time.

The former first round pick went from a low-risk signing by the Saints last season to a four-year, $28m contract this offseason. The strategy to hang a prove-it deal in front of Fairley worked a charm for New Orleans, whose defense benefited from his consistent interior pressure in 2016. With Sheldon Rankins entering his second year and primed to contribute more, Fairley should see a slight decrease in his snap count from the 700+ he saw in 2016; that said, replicating his 6.5 sacks from last season is well within his reach. This all hinges on Fairley's health, which has come under the microscope again after he missed OTAs due to a heart condition. It is the same condition that plagued Fairley in his pre-draft medical and bears watching. (June 6)

Saints | New Orleans not counting on Nick Fairley (Sun Jun 18, 05:04 PM) - The New Orleans Saints are preparing as if DT Nick Fairley (heart) will not be able to play in 2017.

Our View: Last we heard, Fairley was waiting on a third opinion from doctors regarding his heart condition. There is a chance that Fairley doesn't ever play football again.
