Long was the second overall pick in the 2008 draft (taken after former Dolphin and current Teammate, LT Jake Long). He is the son of Hall of Fame Raider DL Howie Long, and the brother of 2013 first round Bears OL Kyle. While not a force against the run (30 solo tackles per season average over his six years in the league) or the most dynamic and explosive playmaker (3 FFs in 2010 the only time he had more than 1 FF), Long is quietly among the league leaders since 2010 with 41.5 sacks (top 5). Looking at the progression of his sack numbers over the course of his career (4-5-8.5-13-11.5-8.5), he peaked in 2010 before a slight dip in 2012, than a steeper decline in 2013. An early hip injury may partly explain Long's inconsistent season, in which a six game tear starting in week five with 6 sacks was sandwiched between an underwhelming .5 sack first month and 2 sacks in the last month and a half. Another possibility is that Robert Quinn was beating him to the QB more often than before (some of his 19 sacks might have gone to Long in previous seasons before his breakout). Be that as it may, Long has unquestionably been instrumental in the Rams league leading 105 sacks since 2012. The addition of prized rookie interior pass rusher Aaron Donald is expected to further elevate the Rams already potent and robust pass rush (with 2012 first round DT Michael Brockers, they have four DL with top half of the first round pedigree), putting him in the best position to rush the passer since entering the league, and giving him a good chance to surpass his previous high of 13 sacks set in 2011. Long should still be in his relative prime at 29. (May 24)
