Bills | Shawn Nelson could be on roster bubble Thu Sep 1, 02:33 PM
Buffalo Bills TE Shawn Nelson may be in danger of not making the final 53-man roster if the team decides to keep only three tight ends.

Buffalo Bills RB Johnny White (head), WRs Roscoe Parrish (hamstring) and Donald Jones (head), TE Shawn Nelson (leg) and LB Chris White (ankle) participated in practice Monday, Aug. 29.
Footballguys view: We like the future upside of White, but right now he's behind Fred Jackson and C.J. Spiller on the team's depth chart. He's a no-nonsense north and south runner who regularly wins collisions. White also has better initial burst than some give him credit for. |

Bills | Shawn Nelson suspended four games Fri Aug 20, 12:16 PM
The NFL has suspended Buffalo Bills TE Shawn Nelson for the first four games of the season for violating the league's policy and program for substances of abuse, reports BuffaloBills.com's Chris Brown.
Footballguys view: You can remove Nelson from your TE deep sleepers list, if you haven't already. He was running behind Jonathan Stupar already, so this just caps a very disappointing camp for Nelson. |

Bills | Shawn Nelson working on technique Wed Aug 18, 04:13 PM
Buffalo Bills TE Shawn Nelson said he has been working on improving his route running technique as well as his blocking during practices, according to Mark Gaughan, of The Buffalo News. 'If that's my only weakness, my only problem, then that's a good thing for me. [It's good] if it's not running the correct route or making a correct block. It's just technique, that's just a small thing you can work on. You can always get better. It's just simple things like taking your first steps with the left foot or right foot, small things like that. It's nothing big,' Nelson said.
Footballguys view: Nelson has good potential, but it's not quite coming together for him yet. He's currently listed behind Jonahtan Stupar and should not be drafted in most every fantasy league. |

Bills | Increased role coming for TE Nelson Sat Jul 24, 02:12 PM
Michael Blunda, from ProFootballWeekly.com, notes that with few weapons in the passing game second-year tight end Shawn Nelson is in for a bigger role this season.
Footballguys view: Nelson was a fourth-round pick last year, but failed to impress as a rookie even though he was a starter in 12 games. He caught only 17 passes with only one touchdown reception. We like Nelson's skill set, but do not love the Bills passing game. There are several other young tight ends worth taking a chance on as a backup player for your fantasy teams. |

Bills | Five battling for starting tight end duties Sun Jul 4, 02:56 PM
Buffalo Bills TEs Shawn Nelson, Jonathan Stupar, Michael Matthews, Derek Schouman and Joe Klopfenstein are competing for the team's starting tight end role, reports Tony Jones, of BuffaloBills.com. Head coach Chan Gailey appears to want more out of the position than just a dynamic pass receiver.
Footballguys view: We like second-year player Shawn Nelson over any of these other guys. Nelson is a strong player who gets up to his top speed in a hurry. He's athletic enough to attack the deep middle seams of a defense, but also shows good effort as a blocker. We'll see how this battle shakes out in training camp. |

Bills | Shawn Nelson expected to start Sat Jun 19, 06:17 PM
Buffalo Bills TE Shawn Nelson is expected to start this season, reports Allen Wilson, of The Buffalo News.
Footballguys view: Nelson isn't much of a blocker, but has a good size/speed combination. He knows how to use his big frame to shield defenders away from the ball, and has the athleticism to pick up significant yards after the catch. |

Bills | Nelson a factor in the passing game Sun Jun 6, 06:17 PM
Chris Brown, from BuffaloBills.com, notes that with no proven number two wide receiver on the roster, the Bills passing game could be looking to lean on their tight end a bit more than they have in seasons past. With the way Shawn Nelson has performed the past three days it should serve to convince the coaching staff that it's a route they can take this fall. Nelson made four more receptions on Sunday as he has been a frequent target during both 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work. He missed the second week of OTAs due to a personal conflict at home in Louisiana, but is back in the fold and performing. "Everything is going pretty well," said Nelson. "I think I've gotten better at blocking and I've gotten stronger. I always feel like I'm a threat in the passing game. With the offense that we've got going in, coach Gailey is putting some real good plays in for us, not just for myself, but as a team. I just think we've developed a whole lot from where we were last year as a team."
Footballguys view: Nelson is very impressive athletically, and has improved as a blocker over the last year. The Bills offensive line is far from the greatest in the league, so the quarterback will have to get rid of the ball quickly. That could mean an increase in targets for Nelson, who can create mismatches when he's on the field. |
