Summary

The crown jewel of New Orleans' 2014 free agency, Jairus Byrd has established himself as one of the best safeties in the league. A partnership in the defensive backfield with second-year player Kenny Vaccaro will allow Rob Ryan to interchange his safeties, giving Byrd more opportunities at and around the line of scrimmage. Byrd underwent back surgery in late May and the word from the team is that he will be ready for camp, but it has to be a concern. Until we know more, however, we should expect high-end DB1 totals from the veteran. (June 2)

Saints | Jairus Byrd activated (Tue Jul 29, 10:42 AM) - New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (back) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Our View: Byrd is one of the most talented safeties in the league today. Having him on the back end of the Saints defense will provide a tremendous boost. The Saints obviously believe in him as they signed him to a six-year, $54 million contract earlier this offseason.

Saints | Jairus Byrd placed on PUP list (Fri Jul 25, 04:47 PM) - The New Orleans Saints placed FS Jairus Byrd (back) on the team's Physically Unable to Perform List Friday, July 25.

Our View: This after Saints coach Sean Payton said he expected Byrd to be cleared "sooner" than "later." Still, the hope was Byrd would be ready by camp - it wasn't an expectation. So while it feels like a setback, it isn't. He should be back before Week 1.

Saints | Three sitting (Fri Jul 25, 09:36 AM) - New Orleans Saints FS Jairus Byrd (back), OT Tavon Rooks (back) and DT John Jenkins (pectoral) are running with trainers on the sidelines and doing individual drills Friday, July 25.

Our View: It's early, so any running is a good sign. The team will be cautious with all three - especially Byrd, their biggest off-season acquisition. We'll see plenty of them in the coming weeks though.
