Saints | Brian Leonard signed    Wed Nov 12, 12:12 PM

The New Orleans Saints signed free-agent RB Brian Leonard (Buccaneers) Wednesday, Nov. 12, according to his agent. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Leonard's signing is not a good sign for the availability of either Pierre Thomas or Khiry Robinson. The veteran fullback/running back is not much of a fantasy factor.

Patriots | Several players try out    Wed May 21, 01:42 PM

The New England Patriots have recently tried out free-agent RB Ronnie Brown (Chargers), RB Brian Leonard (Buccaneers), TE Ben Hartsock (Panthers) and TE Nate Byham (Buccaneers), according to a source.

Footballguys view: Hartsock and Byham are blocking tight ends. Between the draft and free agency, the Patriots don't seem to be in any hurry to reproduce the two tight end attack they had before Aaron Hernandez's career and life went south last year.

Buccaneers | Brian Leonard not expected back    Wed Feb 12, 01:30 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent RB Brian Leonard because of the depth they have at the running back position.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Bucs will go with guys like Mike James and Bobby Rainey as the primary backups behind Doug Martin.

Buccaneers | Mike James' season over    Tue Nov 12, 03:35 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano said RB Mike James (ankle) will miss the rest of the year with a broken left ankle.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Buccaneers here. They're moving on without Doug Martin or James. Now the Bucs will turn to Brian Leonard and Bobby Rainey as their main duo in the backfield. Rainey is a nice change of pace back with good speed in the open field. Leonard is a fullback who can catch passes and pick up tough yards between the tackles.

Buccaneers | Brian Leonard to be primary back    Tue Nov 12, 12:59 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Brian Leonard will take over as the primary running back after RB Mike James (ankle) fractured his ankle in Week 10. RB Bobby Rainey will back up Leonard.

Footballguys view: This is an incredibly important note for fantasy owners here. Many are going to the waiver wire to add Rainey. He had a good game against the Dolphins, but most of his 45 yards rushing came on a 31-yard carry. He averaged a meager 2 yards per carry on his other rushes. Rainey has good speed in the open field but his fantasy value has a limit.

Buccaneers | Backup running back battle close    Thu Aug 29, 12:24 PM

The battle for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup running back position behind RB Doug Martin is close between RBs Brian Leonard, Mike James and Peyton Hillis. If the Buccaneers chose to only keep three running backs, Hillis could be the odd man out, according to Pat Yasinskas of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: The rookie James may be the favorite right now. Leonard has the experience and versatility, plus he played under head coach Greg Schiano in college at Rutgers. Hillis was picked up earlier this offseason and is trying to make a positive impression. James is a no-nonsense runner who is decisive between the tackles but he lacks wiggle and big play speed.

Buccaneers | Brian Leonard banged up    Tue Aug 20, 11:12 AM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Brian Leonard (hip) could have played in last week's preseason game, but he was held out with a minor hip injury, according to head coach Greg Schiano.

Footballguys view: The Bucs are giving longer looks to backup RBs like rookie Mike James. He has been impressive in preseason action and is the favorite to win the backup job behind Doug Martin.

Buccaneers | Peyton Hillis may not make roster    Tue Aug 13, 06:29 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Hillis hasn't looked good in the last two years and isn't a lock for the roster. RB Brian Leonard had a good showing in the first preseason game, and the team likes RB Mike James as an all-around runner.

Footballguys view: The Bucs already had an interesting group of RBs behind starter Doug Martin before they added Hillis to the mix. Hillis got hurt (hyperextended knee), fumbled, and averaged 3.3 yards per carry in the Bucs preseason opener last Thursday night.

Buccaneers | Two shine in preseason game    Fri Aug 9, 03:53 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Brian Leonard and WR Kevin Ogletree shined for the team in the first preseason game. Leonard showed good instincts in picking up blitzes. Ogletree led the team in receptions and yards.

Footballguys view: Ogletree is battling for the WR3 job behind Mike Williams and Vincent Jackson. He's failed to play up to his potential as a pro but got off to a strong start in the preseason on Thursday night.

Buccaneers | Peyton Hillis injury update    Fri Aug 9, 12:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Peyton Hillis (knee) suffered a hyperextended knee, and it is considered a minor injury.

Footballguys view: Hillis is trying to get his pro career back on track after disappointing with the Browns and the Chiefs over the last two years. If the knee injury is minor then he may not lose much ground to guys like Mike James and Michael Smith. Those three are competing for the backup job behind starter Doug Martin.

Buccaneers | Michael Smith favored over rookie Mike James    Tue Jun 25, 08:45 PM

The Buccaneers have an interesting battle at the backup RB position behind starter Doug Martin. Some have penciled in rookie Mike James (Miami) as the handcuff but that may not be the case. Scott Reynolds, from Pewter Report Magazine, tells Cecil Lammey that second-year RB Michael Smith has been getting some first-team work, nickel offense, and third-and-long reps with the first team this offseason. James has barely been used and is getting fewer reps than 5'5" Matt Brown at this time.

Footballguys view: An interesting situation for fantasy owners to monitor here. Doug Martin doesn't have durability problems but if you spend a high pick on him then handcuffing a guy like Smith in the last round makes sense (if you have a deep bench). Smith is an incredibly fast back who can cut crisply at speed. The team would likely use FB Brian Leonard a bit more if Martin went down.

Buccaneers | Mike James expected to have edge for No. 2 RB job    Sun May 26, 12:41 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Mike James is expected to have the edge over RBs Brian Leonard and Michael Smith for the No. 2 running back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: James is a decent player who can run between the tackles. However, he lacks the big play ability of Smith or the versatility of Leonard. If Doug Martin were to go down the Bucs would likely use a form of RBBC featuring all three backs. This isn't a situation to look for a handcuff.

Buccaneers | Brian Leonard could be third-down back    Thu Apr 4, 07:08 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may decide to use RB Brian Leonard as their third-down back after deciding to release RB Danny Ware. Ware was the team's third-down back in 2012.

Footballguys view: Leonard is reunited with his college coach Greg Schiano in Tampa Bay. He'll serve as a good third-down RB who can give Doug Martin a breather from time to time. Michael Smith is the team's speedy RB3 on the depth chart.

Buccaneers | Brian Leonard agrees to terms    Mon Apr 1, 03:41 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have agreed to terms with free-agent RB Brian Leonard (Bengals) on a one-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Leonard is reunited with former college coach Greg Schiano here. He'll help the team at the RB/FB position. Leonard is more than just a blocker. He can be relied on as a short yardage specialist and receiver out of the backfield if needed.

Bengals | Two RBs might be left to walk    Tue Feb 12, 09:04 PM

Impending free-agent RB Bernard Scott (Bengals) is unlikely to return to the Cincinnati Bengals unless his deal is of the one-year variety. Impending free-agent RB Brian Leonard (Bengals) has been solid, but the unrestricted free agent is viewed as more of a niche player. The team is looking to upgrade the position.

Bengals | Brian Leonard to be potential playoff hero?    Sun Dec 30, 08:49 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Brian Leonard was the team's leading rusher in Week 17 with 10 carries for 34 yards, getting the bulk of the work with RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis (hamstring) injured during pre-game warm-ups. If Green-Ellis cannot go in the AFC Wild Card game against the Houston Texans, Leonard and RB Cedric Peerman appear in line to carry the load.

Bengals | Brian Leonard improving    Wed Oct 24, 07:39 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Brian Leonard (rib) worked on the side Wednesday, Oct. 24, and he's optimistic that he will return following the team's bye week to face the Denver Broncos in Week 9. 'I feel good,' Leonard said. 'I was out there with Nick (Cosgray, Bengals director of rehabilitation) the other day running around. Didn't feel too much pain at all. I feel like I'll be good.'

Footballguys view: When Leonard is able to return to the field we'll see him split time with Cedric Peerman at the backup position behind Benjarvus Green-Ellis.

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis has not ruled out RB Brian Leonard (rib) playing Week 7 even though he did not practice Wednesday, Oct. 17.

Bengals | Brian Leonard, Cedric Peerman to see more time    Tue Oct 9, 02:57 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RBs Brian Leonard and Cedric Peerman will see more time in the backfield now that RB Bernard Scott (knee) is out for the season. Cincinnati's rushing offense is averaging only 104 yards per game, which is 3.6 yards less than what they had at this time last year.

Footballguys view: We've always wanted to see more from Cedric Peerman. He's extremely versatile and a smart runner who is savvy with the ball in his hands. As much as we'd like to see more we won't see Peerman make a fantasy impact unless there's additional injuries in the RB corps.

Bengals | Brian Leonard expected to start Thursday    Thu Aug 23, 03:26 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Brian Leonard is expected to start in the third preseason game Thursday, Aug. 23, because injuries to RBs BenJarvus Green-Ellis (toe) and Bernard Scott (hand) are injured.

Footballguys view: Scott's hand injury is not considered that serious, but the team has been extra cautious and kept him out of the preseason. Green-Ellis (and Scott) should be ready to go by the start of the regular season.

Bengals | Brian Leonard gets start    Thu Aug 16, 07:11 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB Brian Leonard is getting the start at running back in the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16.

Bengals | Plan to use running backs committee    Wed Jun 20, 09:58 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden plans to employ a running-back-by-committee. RB BenJarvus Green-Ellis will be teamed with RBs Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard.

Footballguys view: The Lawfirm should be the team's lead back, and should perform like a low end RB2 for fantasy owners. Scott has incredible talent, and speed to burn. However, he's yet to develop as a pro runner and may be stuck only as a change of pace back.

Bengals | Could form RB platoon    Tue Feb 28, 01:19 PM

Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden is not opposed to going with a platoon at running back in 2012, with RB Cedric Benson logging at least 270 carries in the last three seasons. Benson will become a free agent next month, and the team also has RBs Bernard Scott, Brian Leonard and Cedric Peerman. Cincinnati is likely to select a running back in the draft this year, too.

Footballguys view: Don't be surprised if the Bengals make a push to add free agent Michael Bush (Raiders). The former Louisville runner would be a welcome addition as the lead RB in Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Bengals backfield was at full strength for the first time in a couple of weeks when FB Brian Leonard (knee) joined FB Chris Pressley (knee) at practice Wednesday, Dec. 21. Both Leonard and Pressley were limited in practice. With Leonard and Pressley out with knee injuries, the team has struggled in short-yardage situations, especially in Week 15. 'One of the first ones, there was some misunderstanding by one or two of the guys,' Pressley said. 'We understand the fire of third-and-ones and goal line.
