Packers | Green Bay tries out running backs     Tue Nov 8, 08:14 PM

Free-agent RBs Joique Bell (Bears), Brandon Wegher (Panthers) and James Wilder Jr. (Bills) tried out for the Green Bay Packers Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Footballguys view: The Packers are updating their emergency list here...and one they could be using in the near future. They are desperate for help at the RB position, but James Starks could be returning sometime soon. Without Starks, we'll continue to see WR Ty Montgomery worked in as their defacto running back.

Bills | Buffalo cuts seven offensive players    Fri Sep 2, 01:45 PM

Buffalo Bills RBs Dan Herron and James Wilder Jr., WRs Jarrett Boykin, Kain Colter and Dezmin Lewis, TE Blake Annen, and FB Jerome Felton were released Friday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Wilder Jr. is a powerful back, but he lacks the burst to make a big impact as a runner in the NFL. Felton is a fine fullback (he blocked for Adrian Peterson during his 2,000 yard season) but the emergence of Glenn Gronkowski caused the team to move on.

Bills | James Wilder has bad preseason game    Sun Aug 14, 12:25 PM

Buffalo Bills RB James Wilder Jr. rushed for only one yard on five carries against the Indianapolis Colts Saturday, Aug. 13. He also committed two 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalties while playing on special teams.

Footballguys view: Wilder is a power back, but he doesn't run well unless he gets a huge hole and can build up a head of steam. He's on the roster bubble and certainly didn't impress in the first preseason game.

Bills | Karlos Williams has gained weight    Tue Jun 21, 01:09 AM

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams was carrying extra weight during minicamp, and said he ate so his pregnant fiancé wouldn't feel bad. He has plenty of time to get into shape, but he'll need to be in top form to hold off hungry RBs Mike Gillislee, James Wilder Jr. and Jonathan Williams.

Footballguys view: So it wasn't the devil that made him do it, but instead devil's food cake? Williams needs to get in shape and prove that he's the best backup option behind LeSean McCoy. We love rookie RB Jonathan Williams, and he may end up being the better option...especially if Karlos Williams can't stay in shape and stay healthy.

Bills | Trio of Buffalo RBs see important reps    Wed Jun 15, 10:07 PM

Buffalo Bills RBs Mike Gillislee, James Wilder Jr. and Jonathan Williams saw the reps in practice Wednesday, June 15, with RBs LeSean McCoy and Karlos Williams sidelined. Williams was most impressive in the practice, showing surprising ability to shift direction and make defenders miss.

Footballguys view: The rookie Williams could be the guy who has the best chance to make an impact this year but he will need McCoy and Karlos Williams to stumble before he becomes fantasy relevant. For now, he's going as the 261st player off the board in drafts as RB77. If anything you can pick him up late but be prepared to let him go early in the season if you have to make room on your roster.

Footballguys view: We could see Wilder Jr. added to the practice squad. He's a powerful runner who might be worth keeping around as a developmental prospect.

Bengals | James Wilder likely a practice squad option    Sun Jun 29, 08:35 PM

Cincinnati Bengals RB James Wilder Jr. appears to be a long shot to make the final roster, but the team likely would want him on their practice squad.

Footballguys view: Wilder is a big back who can bang it between the tackles. He's not much of a receiving threat, and he's limited to being a two-down player as a pro. Expect a more run-heavy offense for the Bengals this year, but Wilder is not likely to see many (if any) carries in 2014.

NFL | James Wilder arrested    Mon Apr 14, 02:08 PM

Florida State RB James Wilder Jr. was arrested Sunday, April 13, on an outstanding warrant related to a charge of driving with a suspended license.

Footballguys view: Wilder already has character concerns after getting arrested three times in 2013. All the offenses were minor (like this one), but it shows lack of maturity. He may be a late-round pick, and he'll certainly make it to a camp this summer.

Buccaneers | James Wilder Jr. works out    Fri Apr 11, 01:12 PM

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers worked out Florida State RB James Wilder Jr. Friday, April 11.

Footballguys view: His father, James Wilder, played for the Bucs during his pro career. Wilder Jr. is a power back who offers little wiggle or nuance to his game. He smashes it between the tackles well, but Wilder Jr. is not going to outrun anybody or break ankles in the open field.

NFL | James Wilder Jr. received praise for his toughness    Mon Feb 24, 12:19 PM

Florida State RB James Wilder Jr. said teams he met with at the NFL Scouting Combine praised his toughness for playing through a shoulder injury in 2013.

Footballguys view: Wilder Jr. is one of our favorite big backs in this class. He can punish defenders between the tackles, and he's tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam.

NFL | James Wilder Jr. talks about his father's influence    Mon Feb 24, 11:57 AM

Florida State RB James Wilder Jr. spoke about his father's influence on setting him in the right direction after three arrests in less than one year as a sophomore, including one for felony battery. James Wilder Sr. played running back in the NFL and told his son to move forward, because the younger Wilder cannot change the past. Wilder Jr. said every NFL team he has met with at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine asked about the incidents. Wilder said he has learned from his mistakes and grown as a person.

Footballguys view: Wilder is more mature now, and some of that came through in the interview process. He's arguably the second-best big running back in this class behind Jeremy Hill (LSU).

NFL | James Wilder declaring for draft    Tue Jan 7, 04:33 PM

Florida State RB James Wilder Jr. is declaring for the 2014 NFL Draft. The 6-foot-2, 229-pound junior rushed 81 times this year for 563 yards and eight touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Wilder is one of our favorite backs in this upcoming draft. He's a rare (true) power back. Wilder has the size/power combination other backs in this class just don't have. He split time during his college career, so there's no need to worry about wear and tear like other backs. Wilder loves contact, and he does a good job of keeping his feet after contact.
