Week 15: at New York Jets

All RB vs NYJ

FBG says: Good matchup. Coming off back to back 100+ rushing yard games, Lamar Miller was disappointing last week against the Colts. At halftime, Miller had amassed negative five yards on six carries and was removed in the red zone in favor of Alfred Blue, who managed to punch in a three-yard touchdown. Miller redeemed himself somewhat, finishing with 33 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. Miller had been on a roll, with four 100+ yard games in his last six games while scoring three touchdowns. This week he gets a Jets defense that ranks 12th in points allowed to opposing running backs. The Jets run defense had been on a noticeable slide, allowing back to back big games to LeSean McCoy and Sony Michel, but they managed to bounce this past week, holding the Bills running backs to 75 yards. The Jets have had problems containing quick running backs that can bounce it outside and get past the edge of the line, and Miller certainly has the skillset to give them problems. DeShaun Watson becomes the x-factor, as the Jets were just torched by Josh Allen to the tune of 101 yards rushing and a touchdown on only nine carries. Watson is averaging 31.5 rushing yards per game and has exceeded 30+ rushing yards in nine of his 13 games. He is in line to have a big game on the ground, which makes him one of the better quarterback options this week. The New York Jets rushing defense was once thought of as the leagues best under former coach Rex Ryan, but they have since become one of the league's worst units, ranking 27th in the league and giving up 132 rushing yards per game. The Jets have allowed opposing running backs to average 4.6 yards per carry on the season and have held their opponents to under 125 yards rushing only twice on the season. While they did a good job containing Buffalo's running backs last week (in fairness, LeSean McCoy exited the game early with an injury), they had no plan to stop quarterback Josh Allen, who lit them up for 109 rushing yards and a touchdown. This week they will face a similar problem with Deshaun Watson at the helm for the Texans. He is one of the leagues better running quarterbacks and should have a field day finding room against a weak Jets pass rush. While the Jets have a superstar in Leonard Williams, he cannot make up for the lack of talent around him, with Nathan Shepard, Steve McLendon and Henry Anderson finding themselves overmatched on a weekly basis. The Texans run game has been rolling in the second half of the season, and Lamar Miller poses matchup problems for the Jets defensive line. This game sets up poorly for the Jets in a number of ways, but the biggest issue they will have this week is running the ball and stopping the run.

Recent Game Summaries

2018 Week 14 vs IND (6 / 21 / 1 rush, 1 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

The Texans had a tad more success with Alfred Blue running the football and his longest rush was ll-yards. Blue started the second half and provided some solid runs when needed, he was targets once in the passing game but it was short hopped to him. Blue started off the scoring on the day with a 3-yard run that was initially stopped but then was helped in by an offensive line for the touchdown.

2018 Week 13 vs CLE (13 / 54 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

The Texans are still trying to split the carried between Blue and Miller, it is working keeping both fresh for the game. Blue continues to get the grunt work but he is getting yards when needed. He has a 17-yard rush that almost broke but was tripped up from behind, Blue also had a 21-yard touchdown run called back due to a holding call. Blue remains a viable option in the offense especially how the Texans want to play the game during their win streak.

2018 Week 12 vs TEN (13 / 49 / 0 rush, 1 / 1 / 13 / 0 rec)

The Texans continue to preserve Lamar Miller and Alfred Blue is getting comparable carries during the game. 13 carries for 49 yards but most of that work came in the second half when the Titans started selling out to stop the run. Blue's longest rush was 9 yards and he did have one reception for 13-yards. The big thing with Blue is his continued carries he is getting to spell Miller.

2018 Week 11 vs WAS (8 / 46 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

The Texans are tying to keep Lamar Miller fresh and Alfred Blue is getting more opportunities in recent games. Blue averaged 5.8 yards a carry and was able to pick up some key first downs when needed. His longest run came on a patient 16 yard rush that helped bleed the clock in the second half of the game. Miller will continue to get the 10+ carry mark at this rate to help preserve Miller throughout the game.

2018 Week 9 vs DEN (15 / 39 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

The Texans continue to try and split the running game between Miller and Alfred Blue. Blue led the Texans with 39 yards rushing but much like the rest of the running game, he was shut down from any big gains. Blue's longest run was 7 yards but he had multiple negative yard runs on 1st down due to missed assignments up front.

2018 Week 8 vs MIA (15 / 42 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

With the Texans domination the run game, Alfred Blue nearly split carries with Lamar Miller and was used more than expected. Blue had some chances in the red zone but the Texans couldn't punch it in. He also had some near breakaway runs where he was tripped up right before breaking into open field.

2018 Week 6 vs BUF (7 / 26 / 0 rush, 3 / 2 / 17 / 0 rec)

Texans decided to turn to Alfred Blue when they needed the running game to wake up and he had the longest rush of the day for both sides with a 17-yard gain. Blue is unlucky with the offensive line getting beat and creating some negative runs for him. Blue also had a key reception on the final drive for 14-yards. Blue is going to continue to spell Miller moving forward but how he is used when Foreman returns is going to be interesting to watch.

2018 Week 5 vs DAL (20 / 46 / 0 rush, 8 / 8 / 73 / 0 rec)

It was the Alfred Blue show on Sunday night and the Texans had him on the field for all but one offensive snap. There were a lot of short runs and even some negative runs but he provided some of the best work for a running back they have had all season. With 119 total yards, 46 rushing and 73 receiving, it was a solid effort from the veteran back. His 28 yard reception that had a stiff arm involved too and that has been the longest reception of the season from that position. He also found some cut back creases in the run game and his longest run was 17 yards on the night. It was a strong effort for Blue on the night and was instrumental on getting the offense out of some tight holes.

2018 Week 4 vs IND (13 / 31 / 0 rush, 3 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

After Miller went out, the Texans turned to Blue and his longest rush was 10 yards but the offense stubbornly ran the football to keep the Colts honest defensibly. Blue had a bad drop late in the game when Watson hit him square in his hands. The Texans running backs have been suspect the past two weeks and Blue is the one that will gain positive yards but not in big chunks. With Miller banged up, it could mean more opportunities for him.

2018 Week 2 vs TEN (7 / 36 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Alfred Blue continues to spell Lamar Miller at times in the offense and he continued to produce in the running game. Blue has 7 carries for 36 yards and he continues to eat up yards when he is in the game. One thing that shows when Blue is in the game, he eats up yards in a hurry and is able to get the Texans offense in a quick flow running plays. He didn't get a touchdown like last week but he had some good work for the offense.

2018 Week 1 vs NE (5 / 36 / 1 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

There were only 10 offensive snaps for Blue but he produced 36 yards on 5 carries. Which was more impressive is how he pounded the rock and moved the pile. Blue had a 1-yard touchdown run to get the Texans their first touchdown of the season. Blue remains a spot filler for Miller but it was a good showing for the veteran back.
