Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Chiefs) was re-signed to an undisclosed deal by the Kansas City Chiefs Monday, Oct. 16, according to sources.

Footballguys view: It's the most on-again, off-again relationship in the NFL. Kansas City has now signed the veteran running back four times in the past year.

Chiefs | KC cuts C.J. Spiller for third time    Sat Sep 16, 12:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller was released Saturday, Sept. 16. RB Akeem Hunt was promoted from the practice squad to replace him on the roster.

Footballguys view: Akeem Hunt, not to be confused with starter Kareem Hunt, was undrafted out of Purdue in 2015. He's a good all-purpose back who could get some work as a change-of-pace option for the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Committee for Chiefs in Week 1    Mon Sep 4, 04:22 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RBs Kareem Hunt, Charcandrick West and C.J. Spiller are all expected to see the field in Week 1, according to offensive coordinator Matt Nagy. Hunt will start the game, but Nagy said all three are 'a big part' of the game plan against the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: Hunt is the lead back but the rookie from Toledo needs to improve his pass protection if he's going to be on the field during key passing situations. West and Spiller both have plenty of experience and could take away some snaps/targets/receptions from Hunt in the Chiefs backfield.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller returns to KC    Sun Sep 3, 03:55 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Chiefs) was re-signed by the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, Sept. 3, one day after the team released him.

Footballguys view: Spiller's fantasy profile has life again as the #3 in Kansas City behind a rookie and Charcandrick West. The Chiefs may have had an arrangement in place to assure him of a roster spot.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller shown the door    Sat Sep 2, 06:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller was released Saturday, Sept. 2.

Footballguys view: Spiller is a shell of his former self and couldn't win a spot with the Chiefs even though starting RB Spencer Ware is out for the year. Rookie Kareem Hunt will start with Charcandrick West as the change-of-pace back.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller making push for roster spot    Sun Aug 20, 12:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller 'looks like his old, blazing-fast self' and may force the team to for running backs on the 53-man roster, according to the Kansas City Star's Terez A. Paylor.

Footballguys view: Spiller doesn't have fantasy relevance without multiple injuries in the Chiefs backfield, but if he is good enough to justify a roster spot, that's a reason to monitor him in deep dynasty leagues.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller finally healthy?    Wed May 24, 10:26 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller reportedly looks as 'healthy and spry as he has in years,' according to a source.

Footballguys view: Spiller's 1,000 yard season (2012) is a distant memory, and he certainly hasn't looked like his old self in years. If he's back to full strength, there's no guarantee the veteran will make the final roster. Spiller is going to compete with Charcandrick West for the no3 spot on the depth chart behind Spencer Ware and Kareem Hunt.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller back to old form?    Fri Apr 21, 02:19 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller has 'that speed and twitch back', according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: With the Jamaal Charles era over in Kansas City, the team is looking for a speedy change-of-pace back. They already have Spencer Ware as the lead back, and Charcandrick West can be a fine part-time player. Spiller is no lock for the 53-man roster, and his fantasy value is limited by the two RBs in front of him on the depth chart.

  Chiefs | C.J. Spiller's contract details    Tue Feb 28, 03:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB C.J. Spiller's deal is one year length and worth $980,000. He will earn a $55,000 bonus if he makes it to the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Spiller is no lock to make the 53-man roster. If he can stay healthy and play at his best, Spiller is looking at being a backup, reserve runner behind Spencer Ware. The Chiefs could use him as a receiver out of the backfield, but his part-time role would not have much fantasy relevance.

Chiefs | C.J. Spiller signs with KC    Fri Feb 24, 10:08 AM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Jets) signed an undisclosed contract with the Kansas City Chiefs Friday, Feb. 24.

Footballguys view: Spiller can work as a change-of-pace back for the Chiefs. We should see the Chiefs utilize a RBBC with Spencer Ware as the lead back. Spiller is no lock to make the team, but if he does then he'll work into that RBBC in a reserve role.

Jets | C.J. Spiller playing in Week 9    Sun Nov 6, 12:22 PM

New York Jets RB C.J. Spiller is officially active for the team's Week 9 game.

  Jets | C.J. Spiller's status uncertain    Thu Nov 3, 01:24 PM

New York Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said he believes RB C.J. Spiller can contribute in the near future but is not sure if he will be able to play in Week 9.

Footballguys view: Oh good, more of exactly the back the already have. Twice. If Spiller gets significant carries, this backfield will be a mess. Then again, we keep thinking Gailey will realize Bilal Powell can run the ball and use him, but he doesn't. As long as he doesn't get that memo, Matt Forte should be a solid RB1/RB2 start from here on out.

Jets | New York to sign C.J. Spiller, release Knile Davis    Tue Nov 1, 07:11 PM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Seahawks) is finalizing a deal with the New York Jets, who will subsequently release RB Knile Davis.

Footballguys view: That didn't last long. Davis was just added earlier on Tuesday, and he didn't make it but a few hours before the team decided to go in a different direction. With the Chiefs adding Bishop Sankey, Davis is unlikely to go back to Kansas City at this time. Spiller could work as a change-of-pace back or receiver out of the backfield for the Jets.

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Saints) is visiting the Green Bay Packers Tuesday, Sept. 20, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Packers had interest in Ronnie Hillman earlier this year in the spring, so perhaps their desire to have a smaller, change-of-pace back continues with this workout of Spiller. No signing is imminent, so they may just be updating their emergency list.

NFL | C.J. Spiller may have to wait    Wed Sep 14, 10:17 AM

Free-agent RB C.J. Spiller (Saints) may have to wait to sign with a team because there aren't many running back spots open. Teams have openings for special teams. Spiller's salary for 2016 is being paid by the New Orleans Saints, which means he's likely to make the minimum with a new team.

Footballguys view: We won't be adding Spiller to any fantasy roster if/when he's picked up. Even in dynasty leagues, we're not that thrilled by his prospects. Perhaps a situation will arise where Spiller can get his career back on track, but for now he'll have to wait.

Saints | C.J. Spiller released    Tue Sep 13, 05:27 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller was released Tuesday, Sept. 13. He is fully healthy.

Footballguys view: This isn't a surprise given the fact that Spiller has never really been a good fit with the Saints offense. When healthy, Spiller has the ability to score from anywhere on the field as a runner or receiver. Spiller is going to get another chance in the NFL, but we're not going to rush to the waiver wire when he's picked up.

Saints | C.J. Spiller a healthy scratch in Week 1    Mon Sep 12, 02:06 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller was a healthy scratch in Week 1, according to head coach Sean Payton, who also stated RB Travaris Cadet was going to have a bigger role on offense and rookie Daniel Lasco was going to contribute more on special teams.

Footballguys view: So much for a fully healthy Spiller doing anything for the Saints. He's safe to drop for those who took him as a 'lottery ticket' pick.

Saints | C.J. Spiller inactive    Sun Sep 11, 12:40 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller has been declared inactive for the team's Week 1 game.

Footballguys view: The Saints have six running backs on the roster, but Spiller is the only inactive one. His contributions as a receiver and returner were not enticing enough to make him active over Travaris Cadet and Marcus Murphy. It looks like Spiller is not worth a roster spot in redraft leagues despite a hopeful and injury-free summer.

Saints | Week 1 Inactives    Sun Sep 11, 11:45 AM

The New Orleans Saints have declared RB C.J. Spiller, TE Chris Manhertz, LB Dannell Ellerbe, OG Landon Turner, DE Obum Gwacham, CB Sterling Moore, WR Tommylee Lewis inactive for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Spiller is a surprise scratch here after the Saints used him a lot in Week 3 of the preseason. He's healthy according to all reports, so perhaps the Saints are souring on him after giving him a 1.55 million roster bonus in the offseason.

Saints | C.J. Spiller not popping in preseason    Tue Aug 23, 10:53 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller hasn't had a lot of flash plays in the preseason, and he also fumbled in the fourth quarter of the preseason game against the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Nobody should be shocked. The team wanted to take a look at Spiller as a change-of-pace back, and they may have seen enough.

  Saints | C.J. Spiller's reps limited    Fri Jul 29, 12:41 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had his repetitions reduced in practice Friday, July 29, which head coach Sean Payton said they will do with several veterans in training camp.

Footballguys view: Spiller's roster spot is not assured and even if he does make the team, his role will obviously be limited if the team doesn't trust him to stay healthy with full participation in camp while he's not nursing an injury. If it is concentrated in the passing game a la Darren Sproles, Spiller could still matter in fantasy leagues, but we'll believe it when we see it. He'll go down as one of the biggest teases in recent fantasy football history.

Saints | New Orleans backfield taking shape    Thu Jun 16, 07:45 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Mark Ingram is the lead running back for the Saints, while RB Tim Hightower appears to be the backup, according to Larry Holder of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. RB C.J. Spiller holds the No. 3 spot.

Footballguys view: Ingram has come into his own, and we think he's a borderline RB1/RB2 and we could see him tipping 1,000 yards this year. Hightower finally got back into the league after some knee issues, but will be limited to whatever Ingram doesn't pick up. That means Hightower is unlikely to have any value save as a handcuff. Spiller might be the third back but he's going to have more work than Hightower, since he brings a little more variety to the table. Consider him only as depth though, as we don't expect him to do enough to warrant more than a bye-week fill-in, and his value is around RB7.

Saints | Coach talks C.J. Spiller    Mon Jun 13, 05:58 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's 'health and movement skills' were noticeably different, and he was a pleasant surprise during organized team activities, head coach Sean Payton said.

Footballguys view: Another day and more positive Spiller news. He's an interesting option to consider late in your PPR-league drafts. Spiller had a disappointing season in 2015, but on paper he makes for a great fit in the Saints high-powered offense.

Saints | C.J. Spiller believes he fits offense    Sun Jun 12, 07:11 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller said his skill set is built for the Saints' offense, and he believes he can flourish now that he is 100% healthy.

Footballguys view: On paper...or on Madden Ultimate Team...Spiller IS a great fit for the Saints offense. Last year was a terrible season for Spiller as he had only one game with more than 4 carries and only one game with more than 5 targets. Spiller said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Now healthy, we'll see if he can have a bounce-back season and be the weapon the Saints were hoping for when they signed him in free agency.

Saints | Surgery hindered C.J. Spiller    Sat Jun 11, 02:15 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller (knee) said knee surgery during training camp last season played a big role in his disappointing season. Spiller said he wasn't able to cut and stop like he normally would and he lacked the explosion that he's known for. Spiller said last season is behind him now and that the road to recovery is looking bright.

Footballguys view: Spiller is an interesting player to take a flier on later in your drafts. The Saints offense is going to be a high-powered unit, and Spiller can make plays as an explosive runner in space or receiver out of the backfield. His current ADP of RB57 (13.07) in 12-team PPR leagues makes him an intriguing player to pick up and stash.

Saints | C.J. Spiller looks better     Thu May 26, 07:38 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller's (knee) health and movement skills are noticeably different so far this offseason, according to head coach Sean Payton. 'He worked his butt off in the offseason to get the strength back in that leg he [injured],' Payton said. 'That's been real encouraging.'

Footballguys view: Spiller has upside but at 29 and beat up, it's not a lot. He's well behind everyone else there and we don't see him as worth a roster spot.

Saints | C.J. Spiller should improve    Thu Feb 18, 07:43 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is expected to have more opportunities next season to be successful again, according to general manager Mickey Loomis. Loomis said he believes the 'real C.J. Spiller' will be back next season and blamed a lack of good health for Spiller's 2015 hardships. It was originally speculated that Spiller could be cut this offseason after a dismal first season with New Orleans, but the Saints would save little in cutting him.

Footballguys view: Whether that improvement will translate to better fantasy numbers is another question entirely. After all he'll need consistent carries to truly be a fantasy producer.

Saints | C.J. Spiller expected to rebound    Wed Feb 17, 12:04 AM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a down year in 2015, but general manager Mickey Loomis attributed Spiller's lack of production to injuries and expects a rebound in 2016.

Footballguys view: Spiller could regain form if he stays healthy, but year after year we wait for that to happen, and it never does. If the Saints give him his 1.55 million dollar roster bonus next month, maybe it is a sign that they think he will. Spiller will be nothing but a late round flyer in 2016 redrafts.

Saints | C.J. Spiller sticking in New Orleans?    Fri Feb 12, 09:32 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller will likely remain on the roster, at least into training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett. Spiller will count more against the cap if he is cut before June 1.

Footballguys view: Spiller is set to count $4.5 million against the cap in 2016, and there's $3.75 million in dead money left on his contract. He failed to do much with the Saints last year, and there's a chance the team would move on from him. If he stays with the team, Spiller would once again be a change-of-pace back behind Mark Ingram.

Saints | C.J. Spiller done in New Orleans?    Thu Dec 31, 12:12 PM

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller had a career-low 36 carries for 112 yards and 34 catches for 239 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games this year for the Saints, and he lacked burst in the open field. He signed a four-year, $16 million deal with $9 million guaranteed last offseason, and the Saints could save $3.25 million against the salary cap by cutting him before June 1.

Footballguys view: Spiller won't play this weekend. Mark Ingram is the main back and with the lack of production, we think that Spiller is likely looking for a new home soon.
