Week 15: vs New Orleans Saints

All TE vs NO

FBG says: Great matchup. In the midst of the most efficient year of his career, Cam Newton has hit a rough patch. Hampered by a shoulder injury and a team collapsing around him, Newton has been at his most erratic of the season over the last two weeks. Despite solid matchups, he's posted a ho-hum 6.8 yards per attempt with 5 interceptions. He's been able to ride volume to solid numbers, but is clearly limited by the shoulder; the Panthers are even replacing him on Hail Mary attempts. Newton's slide has hurt the value of Devin Funchess, who's primarily a deep and jump ball threat. He's dealing with nagging injuries of his own and has caught just a single pass over 61 snaps the last 2 weeks. However, D.J. Moore and Christian McCaffrey continue to thrive as versatile weapons underneath. Moore is establishing himself as one of the league's more dynamic run-after-catch guys, with 67 yards or more in 3 of his last 4 games. And McCaffrey is already among the gold standard for pass-catching backs. He's caught 86 passes on the year, scoring on 6 of them and posting a pair of 100-yard games. Those two youngsters make up the new face of the Panthers' offense, and they're paying big dividends even with Newton struggling. The Saints pass defense is fast recovering from a dreadful start to the year. In fact, it's looking somewhat similar to last year's dominant unit. Over the past 5 weeks, they've allowed just 238 yards per game, with only one opposing passer (Matt Ryan in a 14-point loss) topping 250. They looked great against both Carson Wentz and Jameis Winston and now stand as a fairly tough fantasy matchup. Marshon Lattimore has bounced back nicely from an early-season swoon, and he's again performing among the league's best cornerbacks. Lattimore is a gambler, always looking to make a play on the ball, and he can be beaten badly when he misses. But he's also a force in man coverage, and quarterbacks don't test him particularly often. Instead, Eli Apple finds himself picked on most outside, and he's been wildly inconsistent from game to game as a Saint. Slot man P.J. Williams has also been beaten frequently and stands as the clear weak spot here. There are definitely ways to beat this unit, in spite of what recent numbers suggest. But as long as the Saints are controlling games and bullying offenses, there's always a low fantasy floor for opponents.
