Week 3: vs Cincinnati Bengals

All TE vs CIN

FBG says: Neutral matchup. The Panthers' retooled pass game isn't yet where it needs to be. The explosive new are making big plays, but also crushing mistakes, and the result has been inefficiency in crucial situations. It's hard not to be excited about its parts: Devin Funchess, who's still just 24, leads a receiving corps high on athleticism and promise. Funchess is a born playmaker, who comes down with 2-3 splash catches a week. Rookie D.J. Moore turned his first NFL target into an impressive 51-yard catch-and-run for a touchdown; he boasts dazzling open-field ability. And there's little left to say about Christian McCaffrey, who's already among the league's most dominant backfield threats. Still, Newton remains in the process of meshing with so many new faces that bumps are to be expected. Drops hurt this group badly in Week 2, and the volatile style of the unit suggests week-to-week projections will be maddening. These guys are on the rise, but hard to rely on too heavily just yet. Joe Flacco completed 32 passes for 376 yards and 2 touchdowns in last week's matchup with this Bengals pass defense, but those numbers were inflated by the Bengals' game-long lead. Apart from one fourth-quarter drive, the Bengals consistently stymied Flacco's attempts to push the ball downfield. In fact, in the second half, Flacco targeted his wide receivers on just 15 of his 33 attempts, forced instead to look for his backs and tight ends underneath. They also forced two crucial turnovers down the stretch, snuffing out the Ravens' comeback chances. Cornerbacks Dre Kirkpatrick and William Jackson III are growing into one of the league's top duos, and safety Shawn Williams is underrated as a playmaker. The unit needs more pass-rush pressure to take the next step, but it's not an easy bunch to throw against and will rely on the running backs and tight ends to have success against this unit.

Latest News

Panthers | Carolina to use three at TE (Wed Sep 12, 10:51 PM) - Carolina Panthers TE Ian Thomas, TE Chris Manhertz and FB Alex Armah will all receive playing time at tight end with TE Greg Olsen (foot) sidelined.

Our View: Thomas, the rookie from Indiana, should be the lead at the position and we're interested in him from a dynasty perspective. From a redraft point of view, a TEBC doesn't sound real enticing. You likely have better options on your waiver wire if you lost a tight end like Olsen (or Delanie Walker) in Week 1.
