Week 12: at New Orleans Saints

All TE vs NO

FBG says: Bad matchup. It wouldn't be a huge surprise to see the Panthers turn toward the future, which likely doesn't involve Kyle Allen, at some point down the stretch. Allen was horrendous in last week's big loss, tossing four interceptions - three in the red zone - and taking five sacks while generally failing to move the ball. As usual, Allen didn't offer much efficiency, producing just 6.5 yards per attempt. On the year, his 6.8 mark ranks 26th among 33 qualifiers. On the plus side, D.J. Moore continues to grow and excel as the clear-cut No. 1 receiver. Working from all over the field, Moore has drawn 8+ targets in 8 of 10 games thus far, and last week brought a career-high 15 of them. Moore has topped 90 yards in 4 of his last 6; he and Christian McCaffrey are the only consistent target hogs for Allen. Curtis Samuel and tight end Greg Olsen continue to chip in, but both have waning, mid-range target totals, and neither can be counted on for big, projectable production from Allen. Ultimately, beyond Moore and McCaffrey, this is a fairly hit-or-miss unit with such scattershot quarterbacking. They boast high ceilings, but also week-killing floors. The Saints pass defense has been on a tear since Week 4, stifling a handful of strong passers into low-impact games. Last Sunday they allowed their first opponent over that span to top 250 yards, though Jameis Winston badly needed game flow to do it. They spent Week 11 without franchise cornerback Marshon Lattimore, who remains up in the air for this weekend. But there wasn't much apparent drop-off, with Eli Apple putting up possibly the best game of his career. Apple spent a chunk of the day holding down the Buccaneers' Mike Evans, who made virtually no impact until garbage time. Apple has performed near an All-Pro level this season, and if Lattimore can't go, he'll likely move around the defense to help create mismatches. Unsurprisingly, the Saints were attacked most in the slot last week, where Chris Godwin, Scott Miller, and tight end Cameron Brate turned 26 targets into 191 yards and a touchdown. P.J. Williams, Patrick Robinson, and Chauncey Gardner-Johnson all grade low as inside cover men, which bodes well for the Panthers' D.J. Moore and Greg Olsen.
