Ravens | Chris Matthews re-signs with Ravens    Mon Sep 4, 11:49 AM

Free-agent WR Chris Matthews (Ravens) re-signed with the Baltimore Ravens Monday, Sept. 4, on an undisclosed deal. CB Maurice Canady (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list designated to return.

Footballguys view: The Ravens need depth at the WR position and that's why they go back to Matthews. He's a big-bodied receiver who had a big game (four catches, 104 yards, one touchdown) in Super Bowl 49 with the Seahawks but has seen his career outlook plummet after that. There's no fantasy value here as Matthews is buried on the Ravens depth chart.

Ravens | Chris Matthews signs tender    Wed Apr 19, 05:32 PM

Baltimore Ravens exclusive rights free-agent WR Chris Matthews signed his tender offer Wednesday, April 19. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: He was an exclusive rights free agent, so Matthews didn't really have a choice. Matthews is a big-bodied wide receiver (6'5" 228 pounds) but he's no lock for the Ravens 53-man roster even though they are incredibly thin on talent at the position.

Ravens | Baltimore makes roster moves    Sat Sep 3, 04:26 PM

Ravens | Four Ravens out    Mon Aug 8, 09:31 AM

Baltimore Ravens OT Ronnie Stanley (undisclosed), WR Michael Campanaro (undisclosed), WR Chris Matthews (undisclosed) and WR Chris Moore (leg) are out of practice Monday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: Moore was building momentum as a deep threat with Mike Wallace getting in the mix and Breshad Perriman still out, but that has come to a halt with his leg injury. This Ravens offense could have a revolving door of top RB and WR options as players get healthier and younger players start to come on as the season progresses.

Ravens | Chris Matthews signs tender    Thu Apr 7, 04:38 PM

Baltimore Ravens restricted free-agent WR Chris Matthews signed his exclusive-rights tender Thursday, April 7.

Footballguys view: There's room for someone to step up - both short term and long once Steve Smith retires - but Matthews hasn't built much on the success of his Super Bowl XLIX success and we're not betting heavily on him.

Ravens | Bryn Renner, Chris Matthews added to roster    Sat Dec 12, 12:13 PM

Baltimore Ravens QB Bryn Renner and WR Chris Matthews were promoted from the practice squad to the active roster Saturday, Dec. 12.

Footballguys view: Renner should give the team depth behind likely starter Jimmy Clausen. Matthews failed to build off the big game he had in the Super Bowl last year, and he'll give the Ravens some depth at wide receiver.

Seahawks | Chris Matthews released    Tue Nov 17, 02:29 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Chris Matthews was released Tuesday, Nov. 17.

Footballguys view: Things change quickly around here. Matthews was a stud in the Super Bowl back in February. He had four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown against the Patriots in that game, but so far this season he only has four catches for 54 yards.

Seahawks | Chris Matthews has shoulder sprain    Mon Aug 17, 07:36 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Chris Matthews (shoulder) has a slight shoulder sprain, according to head coach Pete Carroll Monday, Aug. 17. Matthews has a chance to be back in 10 days.

Footballguys view: The big man is an interesting target to watch in Seattle. Matthews exploded onto the scene during the Super Bowl, and he could carry that momentum into the regular season. In the preseason opener against the Broncos, Matthews was targeted one time and had one catch for eight yards.

Seahawks | Chris Matthews injures arm    Fri Aug 14, 11:27 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Chris Matthews (arm) injured his left arm against the Denver Broncos in the preseason Friday, Aug. 14.

Footballguys view: Matthews was a Super Bowl stud, but he has had an uneven camp and the team is wanting more from him. This injury could put his roster spot in jeopardy.

Seahawks | Chris Matthews gaining steam    Tue Aug 4, 01:11 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Chris Matthews is seeing plenty of time with the team's top-end receiver rotation including WRs Doug Baldwin and Jermaine Kearse. Matthews looks to be building off his big performance in the Super Bowl last year. WRs Ricardo Lockette and Tyler Lockett could be fighting for a roster spot. WR Paul Richardson (knee) is on the Physically Unable to Perform list.

Footballguys view: Matthews could be a downfield/red zone specialist, but it will be hard for him to have consistent enough production to matter for redraft leagues. This does put him on DFS hail mary and best ball late-round flier lists, but probably still behind Kearse.

Seahawks | Chris Matthews to be No. 3 WR for SEA?    Sat May 23, 02:11 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Chris Matthews may be the favorite to win the No. 3 wide receiver job with his favorable size and wingspan, according to NFL.com's Chris Wesseling. WRs Paul Richardson, Kevin Norwood and Tyler Lockett should also be in the mix.

Footballguys view: Matthews was active in only three regular-season games last season. He was available in the postseason, but Matthews didn't come through in the box score until the Super Bowl. In that game against the Patriots, Matthews was dominant with four catches for 109 yards and one touchdown. He'll try to carry that momentum over to this year. We feel Lockett could provide the best competition from the other receivers on the depth chart vying for the WR3 position.

Seahawks | Chris Matthews a surprise factor    Sun Feb 1, 10:45 PM

Seattle Seahawks WR Chris Matthews had four catches for 109 yards and a touchdown in a 28-24 loss to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX Sunday, Feb. 1.

Footballguys view: Nobody, and I mean nobody saw this coming. The former CFL star had the first four catches of his career in the big game, and he made them count. His size makes him a great red-zone threat, and he did track the ball well on deep passes.

Seahawks | Friday injury report    Fri Dec 26, 07:05 PM

Seattle Seahawks DE Demarcus Dobbs (ankle) and WR Jermaine Kearse (hamstring) have been ruled out for Week 17 against the St. Louis Rams. TE Cooper Helfet (ribs), WR Chris Matthews (hamstring), CB Tharold Simon (shoulder) and C Max Unger (knee, ankle) are questionable, while OT Russell Okung (chest) and TE Tony Moeaki (shoulder) are probable. Dobbs and Kearse didn't practice Friday, Dec. 26. Helfet, Matthews and Simon were limited, while the others practiced in full.

Footballguys view: Doug Baldwin becomes a better play with Kearse out. Rookie Paul Richardson should also get a lot more snaps with the starters on offense.

NFL | Chris Matthews participates in Pro Day    Mon Mar 21, 02:12 PM

University of Kentucky WR Chris Matthews measured 6-foot-4 7/8, 218 pounds at his Pro Day Thursday, March 10, according to NFL.com's Gil Brandt. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.57 seconds and 4.58 seconds, the short shuttle in 4.29 seconds and the three-cone drill in 6.90 seconds. He measured a 33 1/2-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot-10 broad jump.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey watched Matthews up close during the week of practice for the NFLPA Game in San Antonio earlier this year and came away impressed. Matthews can high point passes and knows how to square his shoulders to the line of scrimmage and come back to the football. He needs to improve his concentration, and become a more consistent hands catcher.
