Steelers | LaRod Stephens-Howling could see time on third down    Wed May 1, 02:48 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers added RB LaRod Stephens-Howling to primarily be a kick returner, but he could also see playng time on third downs. He may have to compete with RB Baron Batch for a roster spot during training camp.

Footballguys view: Stephens-Howling will give the team a nice change of pace back behind Le'Veon Bell. He proved last year that he could carry a bigger workload if need be and can be effective as a return man as well.

The Pittsburgh Steelers will search for a featured back, most likely through the draft, next season because they feel RBs Jonathan Dwyer, Isaac Redman and Baron Batch are complementary backs at best. The Pittsburgh Steelers suspended RB Rashard Mendenhall for the Week 15 game Tuesday, Dec. 11, for conduct detrimental to the team. In a corresponding move, RB Baron Batch was promoted to the active roster.

Footballguys view: Per the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, this suspension has to do with Mendenhall not showing up for the Chargers game last week after being told he would not dress. Jonathan Dwyer will continue to be the team's lead back. Mendenhall hits free agency next year and is unlikely to return to Pittsburgh.

Steelers | Rashard Mendenhall, Isaac Redman injured    Fri Oct 12, 12:58 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Rashard Mendenhall (Achilles') left the team's Week 6 game early Thursday, Oct. 11, with an Achilles' injury and did not return. Footballguys view: Batch wasn't all that impressive in relief of the Steelers big backs, and Jonathan Dwyer was a healthy scratch. The Steelers running game rebirth in week 5 might have been a one-week wonder.

RB Baron Batch carried four times for 12 yards, and RB Chris Rainey added two totes for seven yards, while added two catches for 23 yards. RB Jonathan Dwyer also had four total touches, but he managed zero yards.

Steelers | Baron Batch feeling more confident about knee    Fri Aug 17, 02:09 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Baron Batch (knee) has seen a lot of reps in practice this week due to injuries to other running backs on the team. Batch is returning from a torn ACL himself, so the extra work has been helpful in building his confidence this week. 'Last week, I brushed off a lot of rust ... Early on, I was kind of hesitant. As the game went on, I started feeling like my old self,' Batch said.

Footballguys view: Batch should get the Mewelde Moore role in the backfield and made it tough for any Steelers running back to be a fantasy RB1 this season. The team loved him in training camp last year before his injury.

Steelers | Baron Batch having strong camp    Wed Aug 1, 01:39 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Baron Batch is having a strong camp again this season. He is expected to make the final roster as long as he proves he can play on special teams.

Footballguys view: Batch was a camp favorite before his injury last year. He should take over the role Mewelde Moore held down for years, but he won't have enough value to be carried in redraft leagues.

Steelers | Baron Batch injury update     Thu Aug 11, 10:08 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Baron Batch (knee) has a torn anterior cruciate ligament, likely meaning his rookie season is over. Batch cut on the turf minutes before practice ended Wednesday, Aug. 10, crumpled and rode off in a cart.

Footballguys view: Batch was impressing in camp before this injury and looked to be the eventual replacement to Mewelde Moore in the backfield. Now, his rookie season comes to an end before the first preseason game. Hopefully he can bounce back from this injury but we'll have to wait until next year to see him on the field. Jonathan Dwyer or John Clay have a better shot of making the team now.

Steelers | Baron Batch could make impact on special teams     Fri May 6, 03:30 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Baron Batch could make an impact as a special teams player because he has the toughness and temperament to play special teams.

Footballguys view: Batch is a disciplined runner who is more elusive in the open field than some people think. He is also a fantastic receiver out of the backfield and could develop into a quality change of pace back for the Steelers.
