Chargers | Danario Alexander has needed multiple surgeries    Wed Feb 19, 12:03 PM

San Diego Chargers impending free-agent WR Danario Alexander (knee) has needed multiple surgeries on his right knee because of an infection that occurred after he underwent a second surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament. It is not known if Alexander will be able to play in 2014.

Footballguys view: Alexander is only worth carrying in the very deepest of dynasty leagues. We'll never get to see how good he could have been with sound knees.

Chargers | Danario Alexander has more surgery    Fri Feb 7, 11:42 AM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (knee) underwent a second surgery to fix the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in January as a follow-up to the surgery he had in August of last year. Alexander will become an unrestricted free agent March 11 and isn't expected to return to the team.

Footballguys view: Alexander's pro career will be summed up by the phrase "what might have been." We've lost count, but this is around his seventh knee procedure he's had dating back to his college days at Missouri.

Chargers | Danario Alexander clears waivers    Mon Aug 19, 06:16 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (knee) has cleared waivers and has been placed on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: Alexander will miss this season with yet another knee injury. He's a free agent in 2014 and it will be interesting to see if the Chargers take a chance on him again next season.

Chargers | Danario Alexander to IR    Sun Aug 18, 04:53 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (knee) cleared waivers and was placed on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: Alexander had reconstructive knee surgery on August 15th. His season is over and his future is up in the air. Alexander is hitting the open market in 2014 and could draw little interest because of his long history of durability problems.

Chargers | Danario Alexander waived/injured    Fri Aug 16, 07:24 PM

The San Diego Chargers have waived injured WR Danario Alexander (knee). Alexander will be placed on the Injured Reserve list if he clears waivers.

Footballguys view: Alexander could get picked up for by a team that would want to pay his 1.3 million dollar salary so they can have some edge in early negotiations with the pending free agent. Since no one signed him to an offer sheet as an RFA despite having no cost to do so, we doubt he'll get claimed.

Chargers | GM likes WR depth    Wed Aug 7, 02:30 PM

San Diego Chargers general manager Tom Telesco said he likes the team's current wide receiver corps and indicated the team likely will not sign a wide receiver even though they lost WR Danario Alexander (knee). 'It hurts a lot because Danario worked so hard, he's a good player and a good kid. We thought he had a chance to be a bona-fide playmaker this season,' Telesco said. 'But we feel pretty good about the position. Fortunately, that is one of the positions where we have some depth.'

Footballguys view: The loss of Alexander hurts as the team doesn't have anyone to replace him. Yes, Malcom Floyd is a big receiver but he lacks the upside that Alexander had. We'll see more opportunity for backup WRs like Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal with this injury. Floyd, Vincent Brown, and rookie Keenan Allen should be the top three receivers for the team in 2013.

Chargers | Vincent Brown likely to start    Wed Aug 7, 12:00 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Vincent Brown (hamstring) is likely to start opposite WR Malcom Floyd following the season-ending injury to WR Danario Alexander (knee). WRs Keenan Allen, Robert Meachem and Eddie Royal are the other receivers in the mix. Brown is not expected to play in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 8, however, after just returning to practice recently after a strained hamstring sidelined him from practice.

Footballguys view: We love Brown as a value pick later in your draft. He's a sharp route runner with strong hands and concentration. He'll be a favorite target of QB Philip Rivers because he gets open and catches everything thrown his way. His current ADP is WR44 and he's going off the board at 11.05 in 12 team PPR leagues.

Chargers | Danario Alexander tears ACL    Tue Aug 6, 07:16 PM

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (knee) suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in practice Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Footballguys view: Bad news for the Chargers here. Alexander has a long history of knee injuries dating back to his days in college at Missouri. In fact, he's had five surgeries on his left knee since his sophomore season. After having multiple problems with both knees Alexander's pro future is in jeopardy. The Chargers will move forward with Malcom Floyd, Vincent Brown, and rookie Keenan Allen (California) as their top WRs.

Chargers | Danario Alexander suffers knee injury    Tue Aug 6, 05:13 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (knee) suffered a knee injury when he collided with a teammate in practice Tuesday, Aug. 6.

Footballguys view: Alexander has a long history of knee injuries but this one may be minor. The big WR iced his knee and sat out the rest of practice. New Chargers head coach Mike McCoy said the injury was not expected to be serious.

Chargers | Danario Alexander hopes to stay healthy    Fri Jul 26, 02:45 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (ankle) left practice briefly Thursday, July 25, to get his ankles taped. He has been fragile during his career, but produced big results when healthy. He is hopeful of playing all 16 games this season, and he has changed his diet, conditioning and he said he is 'prehabbing so I'm not rehabbing, to squash future problems.

Footballguys view: Alexander is a boom/bust pick that you can get around the seventh or eighth frame of drafts. He was close to a WR1 when he burst on the scene again last year, but the Chargers new passing game under Mike McCoy will probably not have as many downfield throws. Vincent Brown is probably the better value, going at least 2-3 rounds later in PPR leagues.

Chargers | Danario Alexander briefly leaves practice    Thu Jul 25, 08:23 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (leg) left practice early Thursday, July 25, to receive treatment on a leg injury. Alexander was able to return to practice after the treatment.

Footballguys view: It is great to hear that he returned to practice. Alexander's injury red flag is a deeper shade of red than any other player in the league. We'll be watching this closely to see if there are signs that his knee issues are coming back. Vincent Brown continues to look like an excellent upside pick in the later rounds of PPR drafts.

Chargers | Keenan Allen worked with first team    Tue Jun 25, 11:57 AM

San Diego Chargers WR Keenan Allen worked with the first-team offense on the final day of the team's minicamp WRs Danario Alexander and Eddie Royal dinged up with undisclosed injuries. Allen said he's comfortable with the playbook and the offense's terminology. 'He's done a nice job buying into what we're doing,' head coach Mike McCoy said. 'It's a change for him. We're moving guys around, and the skill-position guys really need to know every position because you never know when Philip is going to check at the line of scrimmage. You have an idea where you're playing, but when it comes to a formation, Philip can audible something whenever he wants. ... You've got to know every position.'

Footballguys view: Allen is an exciting prospect to watch in dynasty leagues. He's a linear athlete who can make difficult catches seem routine. This season Allen should get time to learn as the team's WR4/5 behind guys like Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Eddie Royal, and Malcom Floyd. His dynasty upside is strong and he could develop into a consistent WR2 in the near future.

Chargers | Three wideouts working way up    Sun Jun 9, 08:03 PM

San Diego Chargers WRs Keenan Allen, Richard Goodman and Robert Meachem did not rotate as starters during organized team activities (OTAs), but they are very much in the picture and pushing for roster spots behind WRs Danario Alexander, Vincent Brown, Malcom Floyd and Eddie Royal.

Footballguys view: Allen could push for the starting slot WR job as we get closer to training camp. Currently the team is using Eddie Royal in that role. Allen is much more talented and a dangerous weapon after the catch when healthy.

Chargers | Danario Alexander's health helping early workouts    Fri May 24, 01:04 AM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander looked fluid in making back-shoulder catches in practice Monday, May 20. He claims he's at full speed, a contrast to his injured May practices last year with the St. Louis Rams.

Footballguys view: Alexander has the size to be a quality redzone target. He's got the speed and ball tracking ability to be a good downfield target as well. If Alexander can stay healthy then he could be the team's leading receiver. His current ADP is WR31 and he's coming off the board in the middle of round seven.

Chargers | Likely to match offers for Danario Alexander    Wed Apr 10, 09:13 PM

The feeling is that the San Diego Chargers will match any reasonable offers for restricted free-agent WR Danario Alexander. There are a few teams still mulling a decision on whether to sign him to an offer sheet.

Footballguys view: The Chargers could have protected Alexander with a first or second-round level tender that would have ensured some compensation if they didn't want to match an offer sheet that he signed. They didn't, so it's surprising to hear that they would match an offer sheet that paid him more money, when they could have done that up front themselves and minimized the cost on the back end.

Browns | Might pursue Danario Alexander    Wed Apr 10, 09:12 PM

The Cleveland Browns are believed to be a team to possibly have interest in restricted free-agent WR Danario Alexander (Chargers).

Footballguys view: Alexander has drawn little interest as a restricted free agent that wouldn't cost a draft pick if the Chargers don't match his offer sheet. His knees are probably too scarred to inspire a long-term commitment.

NFL | Interest in Danario Alexander    Fri Apr 5, 08:20 AM

Two or three teams are interested in restricted free-agent WR Danario Alexander (Chargers) and are considering signing him to an offer sheet.

Footballguys view: Alexander proved last year that when he's healthy he can be quite productive. His size/speed combination make him tough to cover on deep routes and in the red zone.

Chargers | Danario Alexander receives low tender    Sat Mar 9, 01:46 PM

Chargers | Danario Alexander expected to return    Wed Feb 13, 04:21 PM

The San Diego Chargers are expected to re-sign restricted free-agent WR Danario Alexander this offseason and give him a bigger opportunity on offense next season.

Footballguys view: The key here will be the level of the RFA tender he is offered. The higher the amount, the more the Chargers covet Alexander and want to protect him from other teams.

Chargers | Danario Alexander creating mismatches    Wed Dec 12, 10:00 AM

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said defenses haven't adjusted to WR Danario Alexander. He has 33 catches for 555 yards and five touchdowns in his last six games. 'He's still seeing a lot of single coverage, a lot of matchups where he's not getting the best (defensive back),' Turner said. 'He's getting the third DB, and he's taking advantage of it, and I think we're taking advantage of it, and Philip (Rivers) is.'

Footballguys view: Alexander has been a big playmaker for the Chargers over the last month or so. He's got a size/speed combination that is difficult to match up with. He's everything the team thought free agent addition Robert Meachem would be. Keep starting Alexander as a WR2 with upside as we expect his hot streak to continue.

Chargers | Danario Alexander continues to shine    Sun Dec 9, 10:38 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander had seven receptions for 88 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the Week 14 win against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Chargers | Danario Alexander leading the way    Tue Dec 4, 12:26 AM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander has led the team in receiving yardage in five consecutive games. He finished with six passes for 102 yards, and he was targeted 10 times, in Week 13 against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Footballguys view: Alexander has been everything that Robert Meachem can't be. So long as he stays healthy we see Alexander as a must start as a WR3 with upside.

Chargers | Uncomfortable with Robert Meachem?    Mon Nov 26, 10:05 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Robert Meachem did not appear on the stat sheet in Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens. 'He's in it, but it comes down to what we're using in terms of personnel groups,' head coach Norv Turner said Monday, Nov. 26. 'We have a comfort level with (WR Malcom Floyd). Malcom plays all the positions. We've tried to get (WR Danario Alexander) going and he's made some plays for us. That's where we're at right now.'

Footballguys view: It's no surprise to us. Meachem was inconsistent in a better passing game when he was with the Saints and that wasn't going to change in San Diego. He's been surpassed by Danario Alexander who signed with the team about a month ago.

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander had five receptions for 74 yards in Week 12 against the Baltimore Ravens. WR Seyi Ajirotutu checked in with two receptions for 17 yards.

Chargers | Danario Alexander has giant afternoon    Mon Nov 19, 12:54 AM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander had seven receptions for 96 yards and a pair of touchdowns in Week 11 against the Denver Broncos.

Footballguys view: We had a feeling Alexander would continue to make big plays this week. The Broncos used CB Champ Bailey to blanket WR Malcom Floyd which left Alexander covered by Chris Harris or Tony Carter. Both Harris and Carter are fast, but they're not big and Alexander used his size to his advantage on Sunday.

Chargers | Danario Alexander feels fine    Wed Nov 14, 07:24 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander (knee) said his left knee, which he's undergone five surgeries on dating back to sophomore year in college, feels just as good as his right knee these days. He has eight catches for 195 yards and a touchdown in his last two games with the Chargers, and he started over WR Robert Meachem in Week 10.

Footballguys view: Alexander could put up good numbers against the Broncos in week 11. With CB Champ Bailey playing Malcom Floyd we could see Alexander take advantage of smaller CBs like Chris Harris or Tony Carter. We like him as a WR3 or flex play in week 11.

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander had five receptions for 134 yards and a touchdown in Week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Footballguys view: Alexander can be considered the starter over Robert Meachem going forward. He is worth a flex start next week against Denver to see if he and Philip Rivers can keep this going for another week. Alexander is obviously the top waiver wire pickup of the week if he is still out there in your league.

Chargers | Danario Alexander says there is more to come    Fri Nov 2, 08:06 PM

San Diego Chargers WR Danario Alexander said he is still learning the team's playbook and working at getting on the same page as QB Philip Rivers. Rivers and Alexander worked together closely the past two weeks to build chemistry. Alexander caught three passes for a team-high 61 yards against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 9, which he said is just the beginning. Rivers was impressed with Alexander's performance. 'Danario was big and he was great. He had a third down slant way down in there inside the ten, then a couple more end routes, an out route that got us going. He was good, he was comfortable. It's just amazing,' Rivers said of his new weapon.

Footballguys view: Alexander is big and fast in a straight line. He knows how to use his frame to box out defenders and makes for a nice target in the red zone. However, his injury history reads like War & Peace.

Rams | Danario Alexander needs to stay healthy    Tue Aug 7, 07:38 PM

St. Louis Rams WR Danario Alexander (hamstring) spent the first week of training camp sidelined with a hamstring injury. Alexander has had plenty of injury problems during his brief NFL career and the pulled hamstring threatens to send him to the waiver wire before the end of training camp. He was cleared to return to action Monday, Aug. 6, and spent most of the day running with second- and third-string units without seeing many passes go his direction. 'He obviously has some talent. But we just have to keep him out there,' head coach Jeff Fisher said. The Rams upgraded their receiver position during the offseason and competition at it is fierce during camp, so missing time is putting Alexander on the outside looking in. Fisher said Alexander hasn't fallen too far behind, but noted the key for Alexander is to stay on the field. Alexander said it felt good to be back on the field and he is going to try hard to stay healthy.

Footballguys view: Alexander has talent, and a rare size/speed combination. He's been injured quite a bit during his college and pro career and may never be able to play up to his full potential.

Rams | Trio of receivers battling for spots    Sat Aug 4, 09:12 PM

St. Louis Rams WRs Danario Alexander, Austin Pettis and Greg Salas are competing for precious roster spots in training camp, and it's conceivable each could be out of a job.

Footballguys view: Alexander is the most physically gifted but is always fighting through knee injuries. Pettis is a possession receiver who doesn't excite. Salas has great open field moves but last year looked like he forgot how to play football. If he can look more like he did at Hawaii then we like him to win this roster spot.

Rams | Five might be battling for roster spot    Sun Jul 29, 11:19 PM

Smith showed progress as offseason workouts went on, and he might be a sleeper if healthy. Pettis has two games remaining on his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.

Footballguys view: Alexander is the most physically gifted out of this group but knee injuries have kept him from developing as a pro. Salas is the best route runner but last year as a rookie really struggled and was plagued by drops.
