Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Dennis Allen shook up his secondary in Week 7 against the Miami Dolphins. SS Quinton Carter replaced FS Rahim Moore at free safety, and CB Jonathan Wilhite played ahead of CB Cassius Vaughn. 'It's not an indictment of (Moore),' head coach John Fox said. 'We're just trying to find the right combination.' CB Chris X. Harris also played ahead of Wilhite as the nickel in the second half in Week 7.

The Denver Broncos will be missing several defensive bodies in Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. DT Marcus Thomas (shoulder), D.J. Williams (elbow) and DT Ty Warren (triceps) are locks to be inactive. DL Elvis Dumervil (shoulder) said he won't play for the first few weeks, and CB Champ Bailey (hamstring) might also be out. If Bailey can't play, CB Cassius Vaughn will likely be the starting left cornerback, with CB Jonathan Wilhite playing the slot in nickel packages. DLs Derrick Harvey, Jason Hunter and Robert Ayers will likely rotate if Dumervil can't suit up.

Eric Edholm, from ProFootballWeekly.com, notes the release of CB Shawn Springs has made the Patriots' depth chart at the position a little more clear. Leigh Bodden, who re-signed as a big-money free agent with the team in the offseason, likely returns to the RCB spot he manned almost all of last season. But who starts on the left side? The most likely candidates are Darius Butler, Jonathan Wilhite and first-round pick Devin McCourty. Also in the picture is former second-rounder Terrence Wheatley, though he has been a major disappointment to date, and Kyle Arrington, though his expertise lies mainly on special teams. Butler came on down the stretch as a rookie and would appear to have the inside track, though Wilhite has started on the outside before, with varying degrees of success.
