Week 6: vs New York Giants
All WR vs NYG
FBG says: Great matchup. Tom Brady and the Patriots put on a show in the second half against the Redskins after struggling in the first half which has been somewhat of a trend this season as Brady is averaging just 6.8 yards per attempt in the first half of games compared to 8.8 yards per attempt in the second half. Outside of the game against Buffalo which has one of the best secondaries in football, Brady has thrown for 300 yards or more in all but one game this season and that one game he threw for 264 yards in a 43-0 blowout against Miami in which if the game was close would have easily surpassed 300 yards. It seems that the Patriots will once again be without speedster Phillip Dorsett who is dealing with a hamstring injury that also kept him out of the Redskins game. Without Dorsett, the Patriots went with just a two wide receiver set for over 50% of the snaps last week as third receiver Jakobi Meyers only saw 46% of the plays. This is an offense that will run through the three-headed monsters of Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon and James White who saw a combined 65% of the targets headed towards those three players.
The Giants passing defense has struggled for most of the season as shown by last week's performance in which they gave up 306 yards to the run-heavy Vikings on just 27 pass attempts as Kirk Cousins had the best day of his 2019 season seemingly connecting with Adam Thielen the entire game. This marks the fourth time that the Giants have allowed a quarterback to throw for 250 yards or more and the third time for 300 yards or more ultimately leading to the 5th most passing yards allowed per game in the NFL this season. The issue of the Giants is just a lack of overall talent in the secondary as top corner Janoris Jenkins is no longer the feared cornerback he used to be, and opposite of Jenkins is first-round rookie Deandre Baker who may be the worst cornerback in the NFL has looked like he is not ready to be a starting cornerback. This is a unit that has allowed four wide receivers to go for over 100 yards so far this year as while the cornerbacks have struggled, the safeties have not been much better as Jabrill Peppers is a run-stopping specialist and 35-year old Antoine Bethea is simply average at this point but is overmatched due to the struggling cornerback play. This should be a mismatch from the start for the Patriots passing offense.
