New Orleans Saints LB Scott Shanle said the NFL has blown the bounty scandal out of proportion and that the league wanted to make an example out of the Saints and discourage any similar pay-for-performance programs. Shanle said the Saints had an incentive program, which included payouts between $500 and $1,000 for big hits and other key plays. 'I never saw any money for injuring somebody exchange hands,' Shanle said.
| Footballguys view: The league obviously disagrees with Shanle's take. Player safety concerns are at an all-time high, and any sort of bounty/incentive program is frowned upon. |

New Orleans Saints LBs Scott Shanle and Jonathan Casillas are in a heated battle for the starting job at weakside linebacker. Casillas led the team in tackles and tackles for a loss in the preseason opener, and it could be tough for the team to keep him out of the lineup. At the strongside, LBs Will Herring and Clint Ingram are in the mix to start, but rookie Martez Wilson is also pushing for the role. Shanle, should he lose out to Casillas on the other side, could also enter the mix.
