NFL | Malcolm Mitchell hopes to play again    Thu Jan 31, 01:59 AM

Free-agent WR Malcolm Mitchell recently underwent his 10th knee surgery but remains hopeful that he can return to the NFL despite having been out of action for the better part of two years.

Footballguys view: Mitchell can play when healthy, but it's very unlikely he'll ever stay on the field for long enough to have a fantasy impact again. He serves as a warning for teams looking to draft players with a history knee problems.

Free-agent WR Malcolm Mitchell (Patriots) has filed an injury grievance against the New England Patriots seeking his full 2018 salary of $630,000, according to NFL Players Association records. He missed the entire 2017 season due to a knee injury but was released without an injury settlement Aug. 6, meaning he was unable to recover any wages.

NFL | Malcolm Mitchell healthy    Tue Aug 7, 08:04 AM

Updating a previous report, free-agent WR Malcolm Mitchell (Patriots) was waived by the New England Patriots healthy. He passed his physical, but concerns with his knee kept other teams from trading for him.

Footballguys view: If he is truly healthy, it's a surprise that the Patriots would release Mitchell. He's healthy for now, but the grind of the game will probably change that soon after Mitchell joins a new team.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell let go    Mon Aug 6, 01:56 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell was released Monday, Aug. 6, according to a source.

Footballguys view: A fourth-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft coming out of Georgia, Mitchell played in only 14 games in two seasons. He has a history of knee problems dating back to his college days, but Mitchell has the speed to stretch the field. If healthy and able to pass a physical perhaps some other team will take a chance on him.

Patriots | Eric Decker a potential starter?    Sun Aug 5, 09:17 PM

New England Patriots WR Eric Decker and WR Malcolm Mitchell are both listed as the backups to WR Julian Edelman on the first depth chart released Sunday. Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Decker should be in line to start at the beginning of the year when Edelman is suspended. That's going to be a fantasy relevant position/situation for whoever that guy is. If it's Decker, we could see him produce like a solid flex play for Fantasy GMs during that time.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell still not participating    Sat Aug 4, 09:25 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) attended training camp but did not participate in team drills Saturday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: Mitchell still has a chance to make the roster and even have a big role in the offense after bad news about his knee to open camp, but he'll have to sustain participation in practice and the preseason to deliver.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell may not start season    Mon Jul 23, 06:11 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) underwent a knee procedure Monday, July 23, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Mitchell, a fourth-round pick out of Georgia in 2016, has seen his pro career knocked off track due to this knee injury. He is not expected to be available for the start of training camp and could even miss the season. His status as a Patriot is up in the air.

Patriots | Three WRs on Pats' bubble    Wed Jul 18, 09:33 AM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell, Kenny Britt and Phillip Dorsett are on the bubble to make the team, according to beat writer Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is on the bubble because he just can't stay healthy. A fourth-round pick out of Georgia in 2016, Mitchell missed all of the 2017 season due to a knee injury. Even though he's over a year removed from the injury, his status for the start of training camp is unknown. Dorsett is a speed guy who hasn't done much to impress with the Colts or the Patriots. Britt had a 1,000 yard season back in 2016 (with the Rams) but he had a bad 2017, getting picked up by the Patriots near the end of the year and Britt was a healthy scratch for Super Bowl 52.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell uncertain for camp?    Sat Jun 23, 05:05 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) said 'we'll see' when asked if he will be ready for the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: That's not the phrase you want to use if you're Mitchell...or one of his dynasty owners. Mitchell's pro career has been set back by this knee injury as he missed all of the 2017 season and has missed all the offseason work for the Patriots in 2018. With Julian Edelman suspended the first four games of the year, Mitchell could be in the mix if ever healthy and able to compete for one of the top four spots on the depth chart.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell not practicing at OTAs    Thu Jun 7, 08:46 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) has not practiced with the team at organized team activities.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is doing work on the side at Patriots OTAs. He's got to get over these knee problems, and Mitchell missed all of last year due to this injury. With the Julian Edelman suspension (four game PED ban), the Patriots could look for other WRs in the group to elevate their game. Mitchell is only a hold for fantasy owners in super deep dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell likely to go for OTAs    Fri May 11, 01:27 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) is expected to participate in OTAs after missing all of the 2017 season with a knee injury, according to The Athletic's Jeff Howe.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is obviously in a make-or-break year in 2018. Even if he stays healthy, finding snaps and targets could prove to be difficult if the Patriots receivers and tight ends are at full strength. Snatch him up for a cheap price in dynasty leagues if you liked what he showed as a rookie in 2016 (32 catches, 401 yards, four touchdowns).

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell says he's 'feeling great'    Tue Feb 27, 01:32 AM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) said he's 'feeling great' and mentioned how this offseason 'will be big' for him. He added: 'Obviously I missed all of last season and I won't shy away from the importance of making sure I'm ready when we start OTAs.'

Footballguys view: Mitchell has a bright future if he can stay healthy, but that has been seriously thrown into question. If Julian Edelman is healthy, Mitchell should be the #4 receiver and he might have to for snaps with Chris Hogan.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell won't be activated    Wed Jan 17, 03:22 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) will not be activated from the Reserve/Injured list, according to a source. He will not be eligible to play again until next season.

Footballguys view: Mitchell's knee never responded well enough to have an impact this year after a promising rookie campaign. The Patriots passing attack can support multiple fantasy relevant receivers, so Mitchell should still be stashed in all but the most shallow dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell not activated    Fri Jan 12, 04:49 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was not activated from the Reserve/Injured list Friday, Jan. 12, and will not be available to play in the Divisional Round playoff game against the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: It doesn't seem like Mitchell is on track to return for the Patriots this season. They have until Wednesday to activate the second-year WR if they advance to the AFC Championship Game.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell not at practice    Wed Jan 10, 02:18 AM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was not at practice Tuesday, Jan. 9, and has yet to be activated from the Reserve/Injured.

Footballguys view: Things just don't look good for Mitchell to return. A fourth-round pick (Georgia) in the 2016 NFL draft, Mitchell's sophomore season has been lost due to this knee injury. The team has until next week to make a decision to activate Mitchell or shut him down for the year.

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was not activated from the Reserve/Injured list Saturday, Dec. 30, and will not play against the New York Jets in Week 17.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have been monitoring Mitchell closely as he returns from this knee injury that has cost him his entire sophomore season as a pro. Mitchell could be activated for the playoffs, but don't expect him to do much in the postseason if that happens.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell practices Wednesday    Wed Dec 27, 01:54 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was able to practice Wednesday, Dec. 27.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell not expected to return    Tue Dec 12, 08:09 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) is unlikely to come off the Reserve/Injured list in 2017.

Footballguys view: That means Mitchell will have missed his entire sophomore season in the NFL. He's a speedy guy, but knee injuries plagued him in college at Georgia and that problem has followed him to the pros. His dynasty stock is at an all-time low, and his future with the Patriots is cloudy at best.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell to be evaluated this week    Tue Nov 21, 12:04 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) is 'getting better, for sure' according to someone close to him and scheduled to be evaluated this week in hopes he can be the team's second designated player to return from the Reserve/Injured list.

Footballguys view: Mitchell has talent, but he also has a history of knee injuries. The Patriots are in need of help at the WR position with Chris Hogan (shoulder) banged up.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell could return in 2017    Mon Oct 30, 03:14 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) recently started to run again, and head coach Bill Belichick did not rule out the possibility of Mitchell playing again this season.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have been holding out hope that Mitchell would return this year. We'll see how his body responds to running and see if there's any setbacks. Fantasy owners need only to monitor Mitchell in dynasty formats.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell not close to returning    Sun Oct 15, 12:26 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) does not appear to be close to returning to the practice field, in the opinion of ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. There is a possibility that Mitchell, who was placed on injured reserve last month, won't be able to resume practicing at all this season.

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Thursday, Sept. 7, according to a source. He will be able to return at some point this season.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is a downfield target but his college career was set back by knee problems and that trouble seemed to have followed him to the pros. We could see newly acquired Phillip Dorsett get a larger role with the Patriots now that Mitchell is on IR.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell questionable for Thursday    Wed Sep 6, 04:47 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) is listed as questionable against the Kansas City Chiefs Thursday, Sept. 7.

Footballguys view: With the game coming up on Thursday night we are at best going to see a limited Mitchell on the football field. Even if he was 100 percent healthy, the second-year pro is not much of a fantasy option.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell remains limited    Tue Sep 5, 05:34 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was limited during practice Tuesday, Sept. 5.

Footballguys view: Mitchell is going to be part of a rotation outside at wide receiver opposite Brandin Cooks...that's when he's healthy of course. With Mitchell banged up and the season opener approaching quickly on Thursday night, we don't see the second-year WR doing much if he does play.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell limited at practice    Mon Sep 4, 06:18 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) was limited during practice Monday, Sept. 4.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell returns    Wed Aug 30, 02:58 AM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) returned to practice Tuesday, Aug. 30.

Footballguys view: Mitchell had been participating during individual drills, but now he's back to fully practice. The team is trying to see if he'll be ready for Week 1. Mitchell's injury has opened the door for players behind him on the depth chart like Austin Carr and Devin Lucien to do more.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell still out    Mon Aug 28, 06:34 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 28.

Footballguys view: Mitchell's knee problem has been bothering him for quite some time. If healthy, Mitchell could push for targets as a deep option for the Patriots offense. Even with Julian Edelman done for the year, we're not expecting Mitchell to be a fantasy factor in 2017.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell limited so far    Sun Aug 13, 11:23 AM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell (knee) has mostly only taken part in individual-type drills early in training camp, according to ESPN.com's Mike Reiss.

Footballguys view: Mitchell isn't set to do much in the jam-packed WR corps of the Patriots. The second-year pro has a nice size/speed combination and he's built differently from Pats WRs like Julian Edelman, Brandin Cooks and Danny Amendola.

Patriots | Malcolm Mitchell eased along during spring    Sun Jun 18, 03:49 PM

New England Patriots WR Malcolm Mitchell was kept on the sideline throughout spring practices by design. According to ESPN's Mike Reiss, the Patriots are subscribing to a 'less is more' approach with the second-year wideout and doing what they can to help sustain him for the long haul given his extensive history with knee injuries.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are jam-packed at the wide receiver position, so they can afford to take it easy on Mitchell in the spring. We'll see what kind of workload the second-year pro gets through training camp and the preseason. He's fourth (at best) on the depth chart at the wide receiver position.
