Bengals | Work out running backs    Tue Sep 27, 03:25 PM

The Cincinnati Bengals have worked out free-agent RBs Larry Johnson (Dolphins) and Clinton Portis (Redskins). Portis had previously worked out with the Tennessee Titans, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Portis has looked good in his private workouts according to reports and may just be the answer here. Johnson has been with the Bengals before but is not the same player he used to be. While Benson is out the team will ask more from Bernard Scott, but are keeping their options open when looking for other backs.

Dolphins | Make roster moves    Tue Sep 20, 07:23 PM

The Miami Dolphins announced Tuesday, Sept. 20, that they have signed free-agent CB Nate Jones (Broncos) and DL Igor Olshansky (Cowboys) and released RB Larry Johnson and TE Dante Rosario in corresponding moves.

Footballguys view: Johnson became expendable when Daniel Thomas's career did a 180 vs. the Texans.

Dolphins | Brian Westbrook works out    Tue Sep 13, 03:42 PM

The Miami Dolphins worked out free-agent RB Brian Westbrook (49ers) Tuesday, Sept. 13. The Dolphins aren't sure if they want to use RB Larry Johnson as a backup running back.

Footballguys view: Signing Westbrook makes sense for the Dolphins. They have Reggie Bush as their primary RB and Westbrook could do many of the things Bush does in the offense. He showed last year with the 49ers that he isn't completely washed up and may be an option for Miami.

Dolphins | Daniel Thomas day to day; Larry Johnson is insurance    Thu Sep 8, 06:14 PM

Updating previous reports, the Miami Dolphins are closely monitoring rookie RB Daniel Thomas (hamstring) after he suffered a hamstring injury Wednesday, Sept. 7. The team re-signed RB Larry Johnson because of Thomas' injury. Thomas is considered day to day right now, and the team is not anywhere close to ruling him out for their Week 1 game against the New England Patriots. The addition of Johnson gives the team an insurance policy in case Thomas is unavailable to play.

Footballguys view: Johnson was cut on Saturday, but back less than a week later because of this injury to Thomas. The rookie from Kansas State has been disappointing so far in the preseason and training camp.

Dolphins | Larry Johnson re-signs    Thu Sep 8, 12:58 PM

The Miami Dolphins re-signed RB Larry Johnson to an undisclosed deal Thursday, Sept. 8.

Footballguys view: Interesting move by the Dolphins here. Johnson was among the team's cuts on Saturday but the team must have had a change of heart. Rookie Daniel Thomas has failed to impress during training camp and the preseason. The team is looking for veteran depth if the rookie continues to struggle.

Dolphins | Larry Johnson released    Sat Sep 3, 04:54 PM

The Miami Dolphins have released RB Larry Johnson.

Footballguys view: Johnson might have been an interesting deep sleeper if he had made the team with Daniel Thomas struggling and lead back Reggie Bush having a long injury history, but instead that distinction goes to Lex Hilliard.

Dolphins | Two RBs may be competing for one spot    Thu Sep 1, 03:45 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Larry Johnson and Lex Hilliard may be competing for one spot on the final 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Whoever it is, the #3 RB for Miami could be a hot pickup at some point because of the lack of durability of Reggie Bush and lack of buzz or track record of Daniel Thomas.

Dolphins | Larry Johnson signed     Tue Aug 23, 10:49 AM

The Miami Dolphins have signed free-agent RB Larry Johnson (Redskins) after a tryout. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Wow, the Dolphins with a curious move here. Johnson looked bad last season when he was with the Redskins and was cut early in the 2010 season. He's not the same player he used to be and this move seems like one for veteran insurance more than anything else. Rookie Daniel Thomas has not had a fantastic preseason but we don't believe Johnson is any threat to his job.

NFL | Larry Johnson asking for change of venue    Thu Mar 31, 08:45 PM

Free-agent RB Larry Johnson (Redskins) is asking for a change of venue from Kansas City in the case in which he is being sued by a lady who claims Johnson spit a drink on her in 2008, according to The Kansas City Star's Mark Morris. 'If we can't get a change of venue in this case, it is insurmountable,' Johnson's lawyer, Jack T. Bangert said. 'We want to go anywhere but here.'

Redskins | May need to re-sign a running back    Wed Oct 6, 05:21 AM

The Washington Redskins could look to re-sign RBs Larry Johnson or Willie Parker, reports Jason Reid, of The Washington Post. The Redskins are thin at running back currently due to a groin injury sidelining RB Clinton Portis.

Footballguys view: Don't forget about Keiland Williams, who lasted on the roster much longer than Johnson or Parker. The Redskins cut him last week, but he could easily be brought back into the fold.

The Washington Redskins released RB Larry Johnson Tuesday, Sept. 21, according to Redskins.com's Gary Fitzgerald. Johnson had just five carries for two yards in two games.

Johnson rushed for a team-high 42 yards Saturday, Aug. 28, while Parker managed just 16 yards on eight carries.

Redskins | Willie Parker needs to impress Friday    Thu Aug 26, 07:17 PM

Washington Redskins RB Willie Parker will be given extended action Friday, Aug. 27, and a good performance could help him pass RB Larry Johnson on the team's depth chart, reports Rich Tandler, of CSNWashington.com. If Parker fails to impress, he will be on the bubble for even making the team's final roster. Not only does he have to impress running the ball, but he also has to impress with his pass protection. Head coach Mike Shanahan said that is an area Parker knows he needs to improve.

Washington Redskins RB Larry Johnson wasn't able to get much going Saturday, Aug. 21, against the Baltimore Ravens. He rushed eight times for just four yards during the game.

Washington Redskins LB Larry Johnson said he will start in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 21, according to CSNWashington.com's Ryan O'Halloran.

Footballguys view: Johnson has always been a favorite of head coach Mike Shanahan, but they are no longer division rivals in the AFC West. He is currently second on the depth chart behind Clinton Portis, but could take over as the starter if Portis is injured or ineffective.

Washington Redskins RB Larry Johnson, during an interview on SIRIUS NFL Radio, said he feels like he has some bounce in his step again after shedding some weight during the offseason.

Footballguys view: Larry Johnson could be in for a bounce back season if he can become the Redskins starter. Head coach Mike Shanahan has always admired Johnson, and now the two are no longer division rivals. Johnson would get a heavy workload if Clinton Portis is injured or ineffective this year.

Redskins | Larry Johnson appears to be in great shape    Wed Aug 11, 05:21 PM

Washington Redskins RB Larry Johnson looks to be in excellent shape and has been finishing off every run during practice, according to ESPN.com's Matt Mosley. Johnson has also shown a burst during some runs.

Footballguys view: Clinton Portis is the lead back for the Redskins right now, and could hold onto the starting job if he can stay productive and healthy this year. Larry Johnson has always been a favorite of Mike Shanahan and now the two are on the same team. If Portis struggles Johnson could take over and never look back.

Redskins | Interchangeable running backs?     Sun Aug 1, 03:44 PM

Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis has received the most reps with the first-string offense, reports Jason Reid, of The Washington Post. Head coach Mike Shanahan sees Portis and RBs Larry Johnson and Willie Parker as almost interchangeable veteran backs. Johnson and Parker are in the mix for prominent roles with the squad.

Footballguys view: We think there's a chance that Willie Parker doesn't make the final roster in Washington. That would open up the door for former Broncos back Ryan Torain, who is reportedly impressing in camp so far.

Redskins | Clinton Portis may be third-down back    Mon Jul 26, 12:38 PM

Washington Redskins RB Clinton Portis may have to serve as the team's third down back in 2010, reports John Keim, of the Washington Examiner. The Redskins do not have a lot of speed at running back, and RBs Larry Johnson and Willie Parker have never filled the third-down role during their careers. Plus, neither back is considered a good blocker. The Redskins could be forced to use Portis as their third down back and spell him with other backs more on first and second down.

Redskins | Larry Johnson had strong offseason    Sat Jul 3, 10:22 AM

Washington Redskins RB Larry Johnson looked quick, focused and he hustled on every play during offseason practices, according to Rich Tandler, of CSNWashington.com.

Redskins | Team has plans for Portis and LJ    Sat Jun 26, 04:51 PM

Rick Maese, from the Washington Post, reports the Redskins have plans for both Clinton Portis and Larry Johnson this year. According to offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan it doesn't really matter to coaches how the yards are distributed. Just that they pile up. "It doesn't matter to me. Any way that you can do it," he said. "However we can always get over four yards a carry, whether it's one guy doing it, whether it's five guys doing it, whether it's three. It does not matter to me at all. You just want to call run plays that get positive yards."

Footballguys view: Mike Shanahan always admired Larry Johnson from afar when both of them were in the AFC West (Shanahan with Denver, Johnson with Kansas City). Clinton Portis has to be considered the starter at this time, but could find his role dwindle to a third-down back if Johnson outperforms him in training camp and the preseason.

Redskins | Portis excited about 2010    Sun Jun 20, 03:49 PM

The Washington Post reports that Redskins RB Clinton Portis said in an interview with a local TV station that he's excited about this season. "I've never been a 'me' guy," Portis said. "You all have been around me long enough to know what I'm about. ... Of course, I'm going to stand for what I believe in. I'll take up for myself. If that makes me a 'me' guy, then I guess I was a 'me' guy." Portis said he has been working hard this offseason to get ready. "This year I'm practicing, this year I feel great, this year I got a good feeling about our team," Portis said. "I think buying into the system, buying into the organization, knowing my role. Having Donovan (McNabb), I mean, that's really gonna take a lot of pressure off, because everybody is so worried about where Donovan is in his career. So having Donovan, having guys who are coming in and wanting to prove (themselves), and then having young guys such as Fred Davis who eager and who on fire right now, having those guys around, it take the pressure off of me."

Footballguys view: Portis is reunited with head coach Mike Shanahan and it feels so good. The duo had a lot of success together during the first two seasons Portis was in the league, and now are looking to rekindle that fire. Portis has to be considered the starting running back at this time, but will compete with Larry Johnson in training camp. Shanahan isn't a RBBC coach when he feels he has one very capable RB, so keep an eye on this battle between Johnson and Portis during training camp.

Redskins | RB Parker not impressing at minicamp    Thu Jun 3, 01:44 PM

Rich Tandler, from CSNWashington.com, notes that to a few observers at minicamp it looked like Willie Parker did not have much burst in his game. He probably looks a lot like he did the last two years in Pittsburgh when he averaged 3.8 yards a carry. Since Parker is not a power runner by any means, and since he doesn't play special teams, it's difficult to envision him sticking around unless he, literally, gets back up to speed.

Footballguys view: Parker could certainly be the odd man out in Washington if Ryan Torain stays healthy. Torain and Parker are battling for a spot behind Clinton Portis and Larry Johnson. If Parker is without his trademark speed then it makes him a pedestrian back. Mike Shanahan raved about Ryan Torain when they were in Denver (he once compared him to Terrell Davis - ugh) and the former Arizona State back runs with more authority than Parker.

Redskins | Portis a model citizen since Shanahan arrived    Thu Jun 3, 01:39 PM

Rich Tandler, from CSNWashington.com, reports Clinton Portis is the only returning running back, and after being publicly lectured by Mike Shanahan about offseason workouts, his return seemed to be in doubt. But by all indications he has been a model citizen since Shanahan's arrival. Can dedication to offseason workouts help him regain the step he seemed to have lost even before a concussion put him out for half of the season? That is the $7.2 million (Portis' 2010 base salary) question.

Footballguys view: Clinton Portis splashed onto the scene his first two seasons under Mike Shanahan in Denver, but their relationship back then was described as "frosty" by some league insiders. We'll see if Shanahan can get the most out of Portis now that he's a more mature veteran. Larry Johnson, Willie Parker, Ryan Torain, and Portis are all competing for playing time in the Redskins backfield.

Redskins | Larry Johnson fitting in fine    Tue Jun 1, 10:21 AM

Washington Redskins RB Larry Johnson said his transition thus far with his new team has been just fine, according to Mark Viera, of The Washington Post. Johnson said he's comfortable with the number of carries he has received so far in minicamps and during organized team activities. He also feels comfortable in the team's zone-blocking scheme, even though the system seems to run counter to Johnson's strengths as a thundering, downhill runner. 'I think it's definitely still downhill, because we're not actually running sideways,' Johnson said. 'We're waiting for one or two cuts and we're in there. People know I'm going to run downhill. As long as we stretch, stretch, stretch, and then bring it downhill, there's going to be holes on the backside.'

Footballguys view: Mike Shanahan used to admire Johnson from afar, when he was coach of the Broncos and Johnson was racking up huge yardage for the Chiefs. Now they're paired together in Washington and Johnson could be in for a huge season under his new head coach. Mike Shanahan knows how to create a successful running game, and Johnson may be the bellcow for the Redskins. However, Clinton Portis, Willie Parker, and Ryan Torain will all be competing with Johnson for playing time. We'll have to wait and see how this position battle shakes out in training camp.

Redskins | Not concerned about carries for running backs    Wed Apr 28, 11:42 AM

Zach Berman, of The Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins are not concerned with how the carries will be distributed between RBs Clinton Portis, Larry Johnson and Willie Parker this season. 'That's the least of our concerns right now,' running backs coach Bobby Turner said, when asked about dealing with the personalities of the three running backs. 'We want them competing and we're still installing, meaning we're still putting in our offense. That's the least of my concerns right now. Once we decide who makes the team and you start game-planning, that's a different a deal. But that's so far down the line.' Offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan added, 'It's very rare that you have just one back and that one back plays in all 16 games. So to have three backs is going to make all three of them better. It's a matter of time, but all three of them will help us.'

Footballguys view: This RB competition seems to be wide open. Clinton Portis is reunited with Bobby Turner, but some question how much injuries have caught up with him. Larry Johnson gets a fresh start in Washington, and Mike Shanahan has always been a big fan of his. Willie Parker left Pittsburgh for more opportunity, but he seems to be the dark horse in this competition.
