Week 13: at New York Jets

Mark and Joe say: Tough matchup. This renewal of an AFC East rivalry occurs in the shadow of the Patriots' 9-2 record, but Miami has a shot at a wild-card berth at 6-5 while the pitiful Jets are trying to be spoilers at 2-9. Lamar Miller has been carrying the load for Miami all year - over the past two games, he's handled 27/145/0 rushing and 3/20/0 receiving, but Daniel Thomas has siphoned off a rushing score with 8/42/1 to his credit (and Ryan Tannehill snagged another rushing TD last week at Denver with 4/15/1 rushing). Going forwards we expect more of the same, with Miller seeing the bulk of the work but occasional scores falling into the lap of the lumbering Thomas. The Jets' rush D is now ranked fourth in the NFL averaging 86.2 yards allowed per game, with six rushing scores handed out to date. Last week, they were crushed 3-38 by the Bills (and the team allowed 29/116/2 rushing), while two games ago the Jets upset the Steelers and only allowed 17/36/0 rushing to Pittsburgh. It's fair to say that the Jets' rush D has swung wildly between extremes in recent weeks. Miller is a solid back, but the Jets' one virtue this year is their rush D - this looks like a tough matchup for the visiting Dolphins.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 10 vs DET (5 / 14 / 0 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

Thomas was the biggest immediate beneficiary of Lamar Miller's sore shoulder on Sunday, swapping series with the Miami starter on the opening drives. Thomas didn't really add anything positive to the team, with Detroit's stout front containing the Miami running game all day. However, on the opening drive of the second half, Thomas lost a fumble inside Miami territory. The Dolphins defense bailed him out, forcing a punt out of the Lions, but from that point on, Damien Williams took most of the early down work in the MIA backfield. Thomas was limited to sharing some third downs with Lamar Miller, and didn't even receive a target in the passing game. While he had fumbling problems in the past, Thomas had yet to put the ball on the ground this season, albeit in limited duty. However, the coaching staff was quick to punish him after he gave one away on Sunday. It was for the best too, as Damien Williams provided a spark to the Dolphins. Even with Lamar Miller likely to be extremely limited or even inactive on Thursday, Thomas still isn't an option against a tough Buffalo defense.

2014 Week 12 vs DEN (3 / 19 / 1 rush, 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 rec)

The former second-round pick worked as the primary #2 back behind Lamar Miller, poaching a TD on the first drive of the game. He was used sparingly over the remainder of the game, picking up the majority of his remaining snaps on the final drive when the Dolphins were forced to go to the no-huddle. Besides his TD run, he had a good 10-yard burst on a third and short, and converted a two-point conversion try. That's not enough to make him ownable in any league though. Even if Lamar Miller were to aggravate his knee or shoulder injuries, Thomas would be the lead back of an uninspiring committee.

Latest News

Dolphins | Lamar Miller questionable (Fri Nov 21, 05:52 PM) - Miami Dolphins RB Lamar Miller (shoulder, knee) was limited in practice Friday, Nov. 21, and is listed as questionable for Week 12 against the Denver Broncos. Miller has been nursing a sore shoulder for the last three weeks, but he also recently suffered a knee injury in practice. RBs Damien Williams and Daniel Thomas will likely share the workload if Miller sits out. RB LaMichael James could also be activated for the first time this year.

Our View: Miller is facing a tough run defense and his team could fall behind and abandon the run on Sunday against Denver. He's a weak RB2 play, and there's a small chance he could be inactive.
