Week 9: vs San Diego Chargers

Mark and Joe say: Great matchup. The Dolphins have taken care of business and beat the teams they should have defeated over the past two weeks, with 24/148/0 rushing at Jacksonville (a 27-13 win) and 33/137/1 rushing at Chicago (a 27-13 win). Lamar Miller remains the lead back with 32/139/1 rushing and 5/43/0 receiving over that time span, with 11/43/0 rushing and 5/37/0 receiving doled out to Daniel Thomas in his change-of-pace role. The Chargers have not taken care of business in the past two weeks, dropping two games straight while allowing 30/139/2 rushing to the Broncos last week and and 39/154/1 rushing to the Chiefs two games ago. Advantage, Miami.

Recent Game Summaries

2014 Week 7 vs CHI (7 / 25 / 0 rush, 3 / 3 / 25 / 0 rec)

A week after being inactive in favor of Damien Williams, Daniel Thomas out-snapped Williams 24-5, and out-touched him 10-3 in Sunday's win over the Bears. It's clear Williams was simply active over Thomas due to special teams work, and the Dolphins still like Thomas as a change of pace to Lamar Miller. Producing 50 yards on those 10 touches, Thomas does look like a different player than the slow-footed plodder in season's past. He's more of natural catcher of the ball out of the backfield than Miller, but that doesn't necessarily mean he might start taking passing down snaps from the starter. With Lazor and Philbin both wanting to move with tempo, Thomas is likely to mix in with a series every so often to give Miller a breather, but isn't a threat to steal any snaps. In theory, he's the "handcuff" to Miller, but he's probably not worth rostering unless it's a deep league with plenty of bench spots.

2014 Week 8 vs JAX (4 / 18 / 0 rush, 2 / 2 / 12 / 0 rec)

The once-left-for-dead Thomas once again looked good deputizing for Lamar Miller on Sunday vs. Jacksonville. He looks more confident running the ball than he ever did in his first three seasons in Miami, and is providing a boost in the passing game as well. In the four games he's been active this season, Thomas has produced an uber-efficient 176 total yards on 25 touches, so the change of pace he's providing is very much a welcomed addition to the Dolphins. With Damien Williams not seeing the field once for an offensive snap on Sunday, the #2 job is all Thomas' as well. With all of the running back injuries this season, you can't say with any certainty that Lamar Miller will stay healthy for the rest of the season. However, Thomas will need his teammate to go down to truly have a shot at any fantasy relevance. He's still not worth a preemptive pickup unless it's a very deep league.
