Buccaneers | Wide receiver corps slowly taking shape    Mon Jul 7, 10:06 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Vincent Jackson and WR Mike Evans are expected to open the year as the starters, and WR Robert Herron, WR Chris Owusu and WR Louis Murphy are the frontrunners for the remaining spots, according to Scott Smith of Buccaneers.com. Smith also tabbed WR David Gettis as a player that could surprise and make the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: The Bucs addressed the massive hole at their #2 WR spot after trading away Mike Williams, but they are still very thin at the position after that. The tight end should play a nice-sized role in the passing game, which means that Brandon Myers or rookie Austin Seferian-Jenkins could be good waiver pickups early in the season if they pan out.

Among the players that will take part in the workouts include RBs Alfred Morris, Evan Royster and Chris Thompson, WRs Pierre Garcon, Aldrick Robinson, Santana Moss, Andre Roberts and David Gettis and TE Jordan Reed.

Footballguys view: Griffin has to bounce back this year after a disappointing sophomore season. It's good that he's taking this offseason to show leadership skills. He could have a fine year under new head coach Jay Gruden.

The Carolina Panthers released WR David Gettis (hamstring) with an injury settlement Friday, Sept. 6.

Panthers | David Gettis injures hamstring    Thu Aug 29, 09:16 PM

Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury in the team's final preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29, and will not return.

Footballguys view: Gettis has improved as a pass catcher during his pro career. He's doing a better job of reaching for the ball instead of body catching it. However, injuries have always held him back during his time in the NFL. This latest injury is just another (perhaps minor) setback.

Panthers | Competition for No. 3 WR job    Tue Aug 20, 04:03 PM

Carolina Panthers WR Armanti Edwards (hamstring) has impressed the coaching staff in training camp and the preseason and has been listed as the third receiver behind WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell. WRs Domenik Hixon, David Gettis and Ted Ginn Jr. are battling with Edwards. Edwards spent some time dealing with a hamstring injury which kept him out of the team's second preseason game. The door has reopened for Gettis because of the ailment, and he was impressive with five catches for 82 yards in the second preseason game. It now looks like a wide open race for the No. 3 spot.

Footballguys view: Edwards has been a disappointment during his pro career but things may be clicking for him right now. Gettis has improved his concentration and is finally staying healthy and impressing. It's a competition we may not get an answer to until right before the start of the regular season. Neither are hot fantasy options if they win the job.

Panthers | David Gettis pushing for No. 3 WR job    Sat Aug 17, 12:30 PM

Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis has been the team's leading receiver in each of the first two preseason games and could join the competition for the No. 3 wide receiver job. He has not caught a pass from QB Cam Newton yet but could in the near future.

Footballguys view: Gettis is putting up a good showing for the job. He's always been known as a receiver who catches most everything thrown his way. However, in years past he was known for body catching most passes. Now Gettis is showing the ability to snatch passes out of the air with arms extended away from his body.

Panthers | David Gettis has strong night    Fri Aug 16, 12:40 PM

Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis helped his chances of making the 53-man roster in the teams preseason game Thursday, Aug. 16, Gettis had five catches for 82 yards. Gettis has also worked to change the way he catches the ball, using his hands instead of trapping the ball against his body.

Footballguys view: Gettis was a player known for catching (body catching) everything when he came out of Baylor. It's good to see him snatching passes with arms extended away from his body. He's competing to win the WR3 job behind Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.

Panthers | David Gettis in danger of losing job?    Wed Jul 31, 12:11 PM

Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis has struggled with injuries in his career, and he appears to be slower than previous seasons so far during training camp. He is behind starting WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell on the depth chart, and newcomers WRs Ted Ginn Jr. and Domenik Hixon appear to be ahead of him as well.

Footballguys view: Gettis just hasn't been the same since he was first injured in the NFL years ago. With the added weapons we could see the team move on if Gettis doesn't impress in camp.

Panthers | Wide receiver notes    Thu Jun 13, 01:25 PM

Carolina Panthers WRs Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell are locked in at the top two spots. Ted Ginn Jr. has stood out during minicamp, catching several deep passes from Cam Newton. Armanti Edwards looks more comfortable playing the position. Ginn and Edwards will compete with Kealoha Pilares, Joe Adams and David Gettis for roster spots and reps.

Footballguys view: Smith should be the star receiver he's been for years in 2013. His current ADP is WR28 (6.08) which makes him a good value. The bigger question mark is LaFell. He's got the size/speed combination to be an effective pro but has lacked consistency to his game. LaFell's current ADP is WR69 and he's coming off the board at 14.10 in 12 team PPR leagues.

Panthers | Brandon LaFell injury update    Fri Nov 2, 08:31 PM

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said the team was hoping WR Brandon LaFell (concussion) could go through some work Friday, Nov. 2, but he didn't work out as the team had hoped. LaFell is listed as doubtful for Week 9 against the Washington Redskins. 'It doesn't (look good for LaFell),' Rivera said. 'We'll see how he is tomorrow, and then we'll go from there.'

Footballguys view: Without LaFell in the lineup it will mean more targets for WR Steve Smith and TE Greg Olsen. Could be a big day for the Panthers passing game against the 32nd rank Redskins pass defense.

Panthers | David Gettis hopes to play in preseason    Wed Aug 22, 08:57 PM

Carolina Panthers WR David Gettis (hamstring) said he is getting closer to practice and hopes to get some playing time during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Gettis has completely fallen off of the radar as a sleeper with the emergence of Brandon LaFell as the Panthers number two receiver. He has a terrific natural size/speed combination that is worth tracking in deep dynasty leagues, but Gettis probably isn't worth a roster spot right now.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said WR David Gettis (knee) is running at full speed but is not sure when Gettis will be able to begin practicing.

Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday, Aug. 1, that he expects WR David Gettis (knee) to challenge for the starting job opposite WR Steve Smith once he is healthy.

Panthers | David Gettis injury update     Wed Jul 25, 10:54 AM

Updating a previous item, Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said WR David Gettis (hamstring) tweaked a hamstring and that is why he was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list. The injury is in no way related to the torn anterior cruciate ligament injury that sidelined Gettis last season. The team simply is being cautious with what he termed a minor injury. Hurney said he expects Gettis to come off the PUP list soon after training camp begins.

Footballguys view: This is always the story with Gettis. He's talented but oft-injured and that has prevented him from playing up to his potential. If Gettis is healthy he'll compete for the Panthers WR3 job behind Steve Smith and Brandon LaFell.
