NFL | Darnell Dockett calls it a career    Sun Jul 24, 03:40 PM

Free-agent DL Darnell Dockett (49ers) is expected to sign a one-day contract with the Arizona Cardinals before announcing his retirement from football on Monday, July 25, according to a source.   49ers | Two players cleared to practice    Tue Jul 28, 06:33 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Darnell Dockett (knee) and SS Jimmie Ward (foot) have been cleared to practice.

Footballguys view: Dockett missed all of last season for the Cardinals as he tore his ACL last August. The 49ers should ease the aging pass-rusher back into action. He should work as a part-time player when healthy. Ward flashed as a rookie last year before going down in the second half of 2014. He'll likely work as a nickel corner this year, but he's still got the upside to be a quality starter on the outside someday.

49ers | Darnell Dockett to be ready for opener    Tue Jun 9, 03:24 PM

San Francisco 49ers DT Darnell Dockett (knee) said he is ahead of schedule in his recovery and will be ready for the regular season opener. Dockett is recovering from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Dockett could be a nice starter for the 49ers defense if healthy. He continues to recover in mandatory minicamp and may even begin training camp on the PUP list.

49ers | Darnell Dockett agrees with San Fran    Thu Mar 5, 09:47 AM

Free-agent DE Darnell Dockett (Cardinals) agreed with the San Francisco 49ers Thursday, March 5, according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus.

Footballguys view: A good move for the 49ers here. Dockett missed all of last year with an ACL tear, but he can still be an effective player. Dockett will likely compete with Tank Carradine for the starting 3-4 end job vacated by Ray McDonald. At the very least, Dockett will be a part-time pass-rusher for the 49ers.

Rams | Interested in Darnell Dockett    Wed Mar 4, 07:14 PM

Free-agent DT Darnell Dockett (Cardinals) has received interest from the St. Louis Rams. However, he's expected to choose between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 4.

Footballguys view: We'd love to see Dockett on the Rams. He's not the player he used to be, but Dockett would be a fine part-time pass-rusher for any team interested in him.

Seahawks | Interested in Darnell Dockett    Wed Mar 4, 07:14 PM

Free-agent DT Darnell Dockett (Cardinals) has received interest from the Seattle Seahawks. However, he's expected to choose between the San Francisco 49ers and Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, March 4.

Footballguys view: That sounds like a move the Seahawks could make. Dockett may have been slowed a bit by injury at this point in his career, but he could be a great part-time pass-rusher for the Seattle defense.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett cut    Fri Feb 27, 04:17 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett was released Friday, Feb. 27. The Cardinals would like to re-sign Dockett if he is not able to find a better offer from another team.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals would like to bring back Dockett...but the price has to be right. There are reports and rumors swirling that the two could not agree on his market value, and that's why he was released.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett entering final year    Fri Feb 6, 02:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals DE Darnell Dockett (knee) is scheduled to count $9.8 million against Arizona's 2015 salary cap. The team would take a hit of $3.0 million in dead money by releasing him regardless of being a June 1 designation.

Footballguys view: We don't see the Cardinals getting rid of Dockett with that cap hit. As previously reported, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he expects Dockett to return for the final year of his deal.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett to IR    Thu Aug 21, 05:03 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett (knee) was placed on Reserve/Injured Thursday, Aug. 21.

Footballguys view: Confirming some bad news though the good news is he only tore his ACL as opposed to both the ACL and MCL as was reported at one point. Still this is a tough blow to the Cardinals defense.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett out for the year    Mon Aug 18, 09:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett (knee) will need season-ending surgery after an MRI on his right knee Monday, Aug. 18, revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: Ouch. This is a huge blow to the Cardinals defense in more ways than one. Dockett is an important part of the run defense, but he's also an emotional leader who will be missed. The Cardinals have lost Dockett, Daryl Washington and Karlos Dansby from last year's defense. They could struggle on the defensive side of the ball in 2014.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett could be jettisoned    Sat Mar 8, 10:46 PM

The age of Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett, and his salary, means the team could seek a long-term replacement via free agency or the 2014 NFL Draft. His future beyond the upcoming season is in doubt.

Footballguys view: Docket has an $8.75 million cap number this year. However, there's $6 million in dead money on his deal. The Cardinals wouldn't even get $3 million in savings if Dockett is released.

Arizona Cardinals DT Darnell Dockett said the team has no choice but to make the playoffs in 2013. "We don't have a choice but to make the playoffs this year," Dockett said. "There's no option for us. We're a veteran team we know we can do some things on offense, we know we can do some things on defense. The biggest thing is that when you get to your 10th or 11th game of the season, it's about not beating yourself at this point. Everybody's going to be equal in talent level, in schemes, matchup problems here and there but the main thing is not beating yourself. You can't beat yourself, that's the biggest thing. You work hard and you'll have that chance and it's in your favor when you don't do those things."

Footballguys view: Roberts had a pretty big day against the St. Louis Rams last weekend and shouldn't have an issue outmaneuvering the Lions' secondary. The problem may be in Carson Palmer surviving the fierce Lions pass rush with a mediocre offensive line in front of him. Roberts should see plenty of targets if Palmer has time to get the ball off.

Cardinals | Darnell Dockett could see time at DT    Sat Jun 22, 11:51 AM

Arizona Cardinals DE Darnell Dockett could see time as a defensive tackle in certain defensive packages in addition to being a defensive end in the 3-4 defensive alignment.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Dockett has the ability to move inside on certain situations. He's tenacious inside and can create havoc int he middle of the line.

Cardinals | DEs like potential in new scheme    Wed May 22, 01:33 PM

Arizona Cardinals DEs Calais Campbell and Darnell Dockett have expressed optimism over their potential in Todd Bowles' defense. Though the coordinator said there isn't a dramatic difference in the new 3-4, which replaces Ray Horton's from last year, they're changing from two-gap DE attacks to one-gap, opening them up for more outside attacks on offensive linemen instead of merely taking up space.

Footballguys view: It's important that the defense is excited about the new scheme. Former DC Ray Horton (Browns) was beloved by his players and some felt he was slighted when the team passed him over for the head coaching position.
